Speaker 2 (00:22):
You're listening to the best of the Odd Couple with
Chris Bruce and Ron Harker.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Jim Harbaugh and the LA Charters. Now Harbaugh return to
the NFL, of course this season as the first year
coach of the Chargers, and they won their opener twenty
two to ten over the Las Vegas Raiders, and man,
they ran all over the Raiders who have a good defense.

(00:54):
Ran for one hundred and seventy six yards on twenty
seven carries.

Speaker 4 (01:00):
That's pretty efficient.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
But justin Herbert the Great strong arm quarterback was seventeen
for twenty six through twenty six passes right and through
four hundred and forty four yards one touchdown, third lowest
and third lowest output yards wise in his entire career

(01:23):
of about sixty three games. So that was definitely something
that we're going to talk about and get into let
me say what Herbert said. Though after the game, Herbert
was all smiles. Here's what he said. To have a
guy talking about Harball leading the charge like that, and

(01:44):
the locker room that buys in and follows him. You know,
it's a special day as well for him to get
his first win. We'll take as many as we can
your thoughts, rap.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
I mean, when you win, Chris, of course you just
got to you know, Hey, it was great. Everything's cool.
I just don't understand. And I understand. I understand that
Harball rand the ball at Michigan they won the National championship.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
I get all that.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
In this man's NFL with a quarterback of Justin Herbert's caliber,
I just can't see it, Like, what is the purpose
of having him if this is what you're going to
do to him, which is to diminish his value. And
I'm not saying, Chris, you can't have a running game
and a quarterback or whatever.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
But this seems like this is his plan.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
The first thing he did got rid of all the receivers, right,
added yeah, and then added the running backs running the football.
I'm not against running the football. I just don't know
how if you're trying to win big time if it works.
Even when he had Colin Kaepernick with the forty nine,

(02:56):
they had success, Chris, they didn't win a championship. I'm
not saying that that's the only way, right They got
the Super Bowl. They lost to Baltimore and his brother,
and I get all that. And Jim Harbor had really
good success in San Francisco. They want a lot of games.
But if I'm Justin Herbert, I'm not with it. I'm
just not I'm not saying I don't want to balance

(03:16):
attack or whatever, but one hundred and forty something yards
and this is not their old coach, and Brandon Staley
Harball is a better coach than him. Okay, so it
ain't even I'm not even putting them in the same sentence, Chris,
But to abandon, like, what do you need Justin Herbert
for if you just need somebody to throw the ball occasionally,

(03:39):
Chris on third down long, you know, passing plays that
you can't run for a first down. Essentially, Justin Herbert
has all the tools. Two years ago, me and you
look dumbfounded when they had Justin Herbert ahead of Patrick
Mahomes in the preseason. You remember quarterback pole.

Speaker 4 (03:58):
That's crazy.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
But that's how much city, right, that's how much talent
they believe he has, and what kind of quarterback he
can be. Last year, I've said it. He took a
step back last year, yep, because you remember Chris, he
had all the turnovers late in the games.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
I remember what was that Cowboy game?

Speaker 1 (04:15):
He threw a pick late right that cost him the game,
and there were a couple of those moments. That's all
I just go get Gardner, Minshew or whatever. Go get
one of those quarterbacks. If that's all you're gonna do
is have somebody hand the ball off to the running
backs and throwing a third down every so often.

Speaker 4 (04:33):
I don't get it. I think Jim Harball is making
a mistake here.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
I think what he's trying to do. Rob, and I
agree with a lot of what you said. I mean,
seventeen for twenty six, one hundred and forty.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Four yards for Justin Herbert.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
All right, this is a guy in Herbert who has
a rookie. Rob averaged two hundred and eighty nine yards
of game passing next year, two ninety five for his career. Heck,
he's two hundred seventy six yards a game, all right,
So you're absolutely right, this is a guy that can
be a prolific passer. However, I we know he hasn't

(05:11):
had much success as far as winning games, and a
lot of that, both you and I.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
We put on brandons name, no doubt, Chris a game
that they could have won. He saw that where he
just you know.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Put the situations absolutely But the fact is that in
his previous four seasons, Herbert's made the playoffs once and
lost that game. And so I think Herbert right now
just wants to win, just wants to win something. And

(05:47):
so that's why I think right now, Rob, he is
willing to go along with it now because he's winning now.
I will say this when you have the I've used
this illustration with Patrick Mahomes. If I'm an NBA player, Robin,
I can average twenty five points a game and win.

(06:11):
I don't want to average fifteen because I can win
average in twenty five. I want to play to my
highest potential. Patrick Mahomes won the Super Bowl last year
but said it wasn't that fun. Not the super Bowl
game itself for winning it, but just the season where
we know he had probably his worst season as an
NFL player, right, and he wants to get back to

(06:35):
being able to throw long, to being able to put
up huge numbers. And I ain't mad at him in
the least big In fact, I want to see him
do it. I want to see Herbert do it. You
want to see the players with star potential play to
their maximum ability.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
And that's what I'm saying. You're dumbying down justin Herbert
for no reason.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Chris Well, I don't know that it's no reason, though,
but I'm just what I would say is I think
he's trying to set a culture where we do run
the football.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
And I think as time.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
Goes on, particularly in the future, like like coming years
and seasons, but I even think progressively this season you
will see more and more passing from Herbert and opening
things up. This is my opinion. I could be wrong,
but I just think they want to set a tone,
change the culture. We're a tough, hard nosed team. We're

(07:29):
gonna play hard nose football. We're gonna be able to
beat you up physically, and then once they establish that,
then New start throwing the ball more.

Speaker 4 (07:38):
That's what I think they're trying to do.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
Yeah, I'm not convinced that that's the game plan. He
wuns the football, Chris, that's how I want you know
what I mean, that's his thing. They wanted Michigan at Michigan,
and I get it. Something works for you. You're like,
that's what I want to do. I'm gonna run the
football and change and change the way things are done.
It just that JJ McCarthy right at Michigan. Yep, he

(08:02):
won't Justin Herber. Okay, that's but he won Justin Herbert,
and if he was we wouldn't have known it exactly.
Do you see what I'm saying like this, No, I
get it.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
There there are.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
Quarterbacks you have Chris, where I understand why you're not
throwing the ball a lot.

Speaker 4 (08:17):
I do. I get that.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
But that's why I'm saying, it's got to be to
set a culture. It can't be or you're just gonna
end up trading Justin Herbert and you could get a
ton for it. But I think he's a quarterback you
want to keep. But you go there, you see we
have they have it won. So we need to change

(08:40):
the culture. We need to change things. But Rob, if
he's planning on doing this all season long, then I
think that. I agree with you, it's a mistake. But
I do think like Herbert's not gonna be throwing it
like he did in the past.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
No, no, no, that's obvious, right. I agree with that,
and it'll just be interesting. It's okay, Chris, when you
win and you beat the Raiders and Herbert has one
hundred and forty four yards, right, But if they lose
and they can't get much going, then then the narrative
will change and then people will start saying, what are
you doing with justin Herbert? How come he's not throwing

(09:16):
the football? It doesn't make any sense to me, that's all.

Speaker 4 (09:19):
It's easy.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
Like I say, when you win, Chris, winning covers everything.
It's the makeup that's deodorant. Absolutely, you win. Hard to
argue with anybody on that day, right. But I just
think though that they can win. And I was torn

(09:44):
between them and the Dolphins for my last playoff spot
in the AFC. So they might make the playoffs, There's
no question about it. They got a good chance to
make the playoffs. You won't win.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
A super Bowl. I don't believe in today. You won't
win a super Bowl throwing it so sparingly now you
can make the playoffs, you can be good. But I
don't think Rob, you can win a super.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
Bowl if you don't throw the football, not with the
other quarterbacks that you're gonna play against.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
I just don't, especially in the AFC, you're gonna get
to a super Bowl.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
Because everything is going to be a process to march
down the field, eat the clock to try to score
and they're throwing the pass down field or whatever and
scoring in ten seconds.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
I'm just saying, like, like.

Speaker 3 (10:35):
One thing they do have going for them is that
they can throw the football.

Speaker 5 (10:42):
Like you.

Speaker 4 (10:42):
It's not a situation where you have a quarterback that can't.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
Throw, so we're just gonna be running, that's all we
gonna do. It's a situation where you have a guy
that can throw the football and you're choosing to run.
And that's different because the defense has to stay on
and always be aware of you throwing the football. What
I would see, and I told you what I envisioned,
what I think the vision has to be. But I

(11:08):
just think over time, Rob, they'll add better receivers. I
mean they got you know they got no they did, right,
I Mean Mike Williams, though was always heard he's now
with the Jets and was hurt last night. Yeah, Keenan Moore,
Keenan Allen's getting a little bit older, So you know.

Speaker 4 (11:25):
I get it.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
You got Lab McConkie and and Quinton Johnson, some of
these guys.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
Fil McConkie, Remember McConkie with the Giants.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
Yeah, I have no idea, but you know that's what
I think they gotta do because I I agree with
you in that I don't think you'll win the Ultimate Prize.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
Now we've even talked about Baltimore.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
Obviously last year they should have ran more against uh
Kansas City, but you still they still threw the football.
I mean, they threw it too much. But they they're
going to throw the football. They're not just gonna run
and they count or Lamar to just get one hundred
and forty four yard that's not unless they got a
running quarterback. That's a difference too.

Jay Glazer, and you may know me for the world

Depression anxiety. So now I'm coming out with a new podcast, Unbreakable,

Speaker 4 (12:50):
Rob G, let's start here. Joe Burrow.

Speaker 1 (12:52):
You know how much Chris and I are dig Joe Burrow, right,
we both do. We liked him when he was getting
out of college and he was gonna People were telling him,
don't go to Cincinnati, they never win, blah blah blah blah.
What do you do, Rob G? You went to Cincinnati
and he did his thing. Second year, only played six
or seven games, its rookie year. Next year had them

(13:14):
in the Super Bowl. But everybody's not a fan of
Joe Burrow.

Speaker 4 (13:23):
Can you explain that's right?

Speaker 6 (13:26):
Super Bowl champion former Packers wide receiver James Jones, friend
of the show.

Speaker 4 (13:30):
He's been on a handful of times, so now he's
on what show was he on.

Speaker 6 (13:33):
He's got the UFS one morning show, the Facility with
the Manuelacho, Chase Daniel and Shady McCoy.

Speaker 4 (13:38):
There you go.

Speaker 6 (13:38):
And of course the big game this weekend is Bengals Chiefs.
You know, Joe Burrow's return to Burrowhead. I believe so.
During the show, James Jones was talking about Joe Burrow
and his confidence level heading into week two after that
dead of a performance against the Patriots at home. And

(13:59):
let's say that James Jones is not a fan of
Joe Burrow.

Speaker 7 (14:04):
Listen, we got to start keeping the real for Joe Burrow.
If Lamar Jackson throw that ball and his toe ain't out,
it's a lot of ifs. If Jalen Hursts look down
in the middle of the field and recover two and
don't throw it and it ain't it's a lot of ifs.
But them dudes take a lot of heat. Joe Burrow
has not been good man the last two years, and
starting off this seat, he ain't been good. He was

(14:25):
five and five last year and then went out with
an injury. All right, then they went four and three
without Joe Burrow. Joe Burrow without top elite wide receivers
is average. He is, but we keep no, no for
real though, but we keep we keep living on the
Super Bowl appearance, but we don't live on other stuff
for other quarterbacks. Joe Burrow is not playing good football

(14:48):
right now. He ain't right, and we keep putting him
up there saying he's better than Josh allah Hea, the
number two quarterback in football. But to be honest with you,
the real is he ain't played well the last year
and a half.

Speaker 8 (14:58):
He ain't.

Speaker 7 (14:59):
You just to the Patriots man, Joe Burrow, this is
the new England Patriots, and you're supposed to be the
second best quarterback in football. Everybody praising that you're the
only one that could challenge Patrick Mahomes and all this. Well,
the last year and a half you can't. You have
not been a good quarterback. And if it was any
other quarterback, we wouldn't keep saying, oh, man, if this,
if that, if that, if this, No, the man gotta

(15:22):
play better and he's not, and you should be nervous.

Speaker 4 (15:26):
Wow, I am here, Rob Did you fall off you?
Did you fall off your seat? Because I did?

Speaker 1 (15:34):
I just and again, hey, James Jones, Chris, he's been
on our show, and I love the passion and whatnot,
But where is there any pushback?

Speaker 4 (15:44):
Is there like any like they have been? I mean
we didn't hear that.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
Yeah, I know, but I'm saying even even yeah, I'm
hoping rob G, was it pushback or you never know
he got pushed back?

Speaker 4 (15:54):
There was no pushback, rob G.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
None.

Speaker 4 (15:56):
Nope. Well, I'm gonna say this.

Speaker 3 (16:00):
I'm he makes some interesting and thoughtful points, but I
do think there are explanations for what because he's right,
Joe Burrow wasn't good last year. But Joe Burrow, now
if you want to say, hey, he played once you're
on the field, no excuses.

Speaker 4 (16:22):
Okay. I think he wasn't.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
Good early on because of the injury, the cash strain
he was recovering from. Once he got going before he
got reinjured or another injury, but injured again, he started
really playing good football his last few games, maybe three
games before he got hurt with his wrist, and he

(16:46):
obviously wasn't good in Game one when they lose to
New England.

Speaker 4 (16:51):
What I will say about him, Rob.

Speaker 3 (16:55):
My major issue and James to me has to bring
this up. My major issue with Joe Burrow are the injuries.
Like number one, he's been injured. He's only been healthy
for two full seasons now. He's played parts of two others,
but parts isn't good enough.

Speaker 4 (17:14):
He's only been healthy two out of four full seasons.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
So if you want to blame something, you know, say
he's too injury prone, that's fine. I think his struggles
last year, as I said, were due to his recovery
from his injuries. But the thing I will say is
that a lot of the criticism and I'm not gonna
make it a brock Purty conversation, but one of the

(17:39):
things people have always wanted to see from brock Purty
is can he play without all this talent around him? Oh,
he's playing all right, he's playing well, but he's got
Christian McCaffrey, he's got a Brandon Ayuk, he's got Deebo, Samuel,
George Kittle, all these guys. Rob James makes it is

(18:01):
true that we've only seen Burrow with a litany of
talent around Jamar, Chase t Higgins, Joe Mixon, who's a
very good running back. And he's saying, well, we saw
him Sunday without t Higgins and he didn't look that good.
I'm not gonna go that far, but I think there's

(18:22):
only really two. There are a few quarterbacks who you
can really say, we know, beyond the shadow of a doubt,
they can get it done without tremendous weapons. Patrick Mahomes
and even he has Travis Kelcey and Andy Reid is
a great offensive mind. Lambard Jackson, who's not had a

(18:46):
great receiver, like a top flight receiver throughout his career,
and he hasn't won a Super Bowl, but he's won
consistently at a high level.

Speaker 4 (18:55):
And if you want to throw in CJ.

Speaker 3 (18:57):
Stroud, I mean, Nico k is going to be a
really nice win and Tank Dell is really good.

Speaker 4 (19:04):
But they were unproven last year and he took.

Speaker 3 (19:07):
These quote unquote no name receivers and turned them into names,
and so I think they're good on their own. But
you can put CJ. Stroud in there if you want.
But Joe Burrow has had a lot of talent. Jalen
Hurts has had a ton of talent, you know, Justin
Herbert has had a ton of talent.

Speaker 4 (19:26):
At the skilled positions. So a lot of these other guys,
Dak Prescott, same thing.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
So if you want to throw Joe Burrow in that.
I think James went too far. I say he ain't
that good now. He went too far with that.

Speaker 1 (19:40):
Well, that's where he lost me, because we know what
the Cincinnati Bengals were before he arrived there and everybody
you need talent to win, and Chris three and one
against Patrick Mahomes almost won that game. You know, remember
the push out of Mahomes on the sideline that led
to the field goal. He almost won and got them
to a second super Bowl and he didn't get there.

(20:00):
But they play damn close in in Burroughhead or whatever
you want to call it.

Speaker 4 (20:06):
You know what I mean? Three and one against.

Speaker 1 (20:08):
Mahomes, against Mahomes, Marvin Lewis had talent in Cincinnati, oh
and seven in the playoffs, he shows up.

Speaker 4 (20:16):
He's the Aaron Judge of the NFL.

Speaker 1 (20:19):
Chris and then from the standpoint room, Yeah, like when
he plays and he's healthy, he's as good as anybody.
He just been hurt a lot, and we've seen this.
I just the idea like he can't play and he's
just lucky because other people I'm not buying that. I
think that's where James Jones needed push back. He's been

(20:40):
to a super Bowl. I get it. No one's saying that.

Speaker 4 (20:45):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (20:46):
And then you know when you bring up other people
and whether or not what they did and those things,
that does give you something. Your second year, Chris, who
played six or seven games your rookie year, you get hurt,
you come back and get to the super Bowl, and
you bet Patrick Mahomes based on the full season.

Speaker 4 (21:04):
Serious, come on, he is living off that and he's
party that.

Speaker 3 (21:10):
Yeah, I mean he won't be living off that four
years from now, right if he doesn't, you know, get
back to the super Bowl or something like that. But
for now, right, he's still early in his career. He's
in his fifth season. Like I said this, if he
plays the whole year, this will only be his third
full season. And so in two full seasons, one of

(21:31):
them he got his team to the super Bowl and
what he got, right, that's.

Speaker 4 (21:37):
Why that's why there's no James. Right, he's living off
that super Bowl. But he hasn't, right because he hasn't
played eight years. Chris.

Speaker 1 (21:46):
If this was seven eight years ago, then you can
make the argument and say, dude, that was a lifetime ago, right, Tyler.
Sports writers were using typewriters, no he hasn't had full
seasons to be able to fully take a look and
say he's living off of something.

Speaker 4 (22:02):
That's where I'm not buying it. Yeah, he went too
far because he didn't even mention the injuries, right, I
mean it was injuries.

Speaker 1 (22:13):
So he was five and five last year and he
played hur don't you remember he was playing hurt before.

Speaker 3 (22:19):
Your body thinks, come on the real Joe burrowbo before
he got hurt. The game before he got hurt, it
was a loss, a close loss, three point lost to Houston.
He threw for three hundred forty seven yards two touchdowns.
Now he did have two picks, but the game before that,
a win over Buffalo, three hundred forty eight yards and

(22:40):
two touchdowns. Win before that, they beat San Francisco, he
had three touchdowns, three yards. He was he was clearly
coming back to who he is once he got healthy.

Speaker 2 (22:50):

No, no, no, man got a barber shot whatever, who's
seven hundred dollars sneaker whatever?

Speaker 4 (24:31):
That your wear twice.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
And then give away the house you don't even live in,
Louis Batime seats in your car, and you waste money
in places of ill repute.
