You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Our number three on this Christmas Eve. Oh my goodness, gracious,
Here on Fox Sports Radio, it is The Odd Couple.
Rob Parker E from salam In for Kelvin, Washington. We're
broadcasting live from the tire rach dot Com studios tyrach
dot com.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
We'll hope you get there.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
An unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free road hazard protection
and over ten thousand recommended installers. Tire rach dot com
the way tire buying should be. And in about twenty
eight minutes, Dan woke woke WOKEE. I don't know why
I'm stumbling at waking uh from us because I put
(01:11):
an end in there on accidents. Okay from USA Today,
the columnist Dan Woki, he will join us all right,
I'm sorry, and we'll have last call as well. Your
chance to still get in if you didn't get a
chance on some of the topics from that we had
earlier and we had Adam Kaplan on Ephraim let's let's
(01:33):
do here, this final lead topic in our number three
Let's do it, and we talked about uh, rock Party
and mister Irrelevant and last year was different. They got
to the Super Bowl right and we talked about it.
He was right up there till the Christmas Day game,
(01:54):
neck and neck, probably in the lead for MVP. Last year.
That would have been incredible had he won the MVP,
but of course didn't play well. Lamar played really well
and Lamar Wanda winning the MVP. And then this year
Brock Party along with injuries and other stuff just not
as consistent, not as good. And if you ever had
(02:14):
any doubts about Rock Party, they were brought to the
forefront this year. Would you would you agree with that,
like finally looked him when ah, maybe he isn't as
good as we thought. And they have a situation on
their hand of forty nine ers on what to do again.
We heard Adam Kaplan said it. They can't bring him
(02:36):
back next year for one point one million. It's just
unfair that a guy has played like this, a starting
quarterback and not making any money. When guys are making
fifty five million dollars and you're gonna ask that guy
to play for nothing? What would you do? Where are
you on brock Purty? I always was leary. I was
(02:57):
even when he was having his success, because I saw
the nine to have success without him. I saw the
forty nine is go to the Super Bowl without him,
and the pieces around him were so good, and then
this year the pieces around him weren't that good. And
guess what, he wasn't that good? To me personally, I
think you commit to brock Purty. You don't commit to
(03:21):
him at to sixty.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
Million, because number one, he's shown he can win, and
that's tough to do in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
It's tough to win these games.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
You can say what you want to say, it's hard
to win and play at that level and get to
where he's gotten to two NFC Championship games and a
Super Bowl. I mean, guys play their whole career making
a ton of money and never get there. The fact
that this young man can get there and play consistent enough,
(04:00):
I mean, I don't I don't see how you don't
pay him now, is it brock per I mean, is
it Dak Prescott money. I don't think so. I don't
think Dak Prescott deserved that Dak Prescott money.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Right now, I'm with you on that, right.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
And so it's a situation where you really have to
to sit down and come up with the best thing
possible because.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
If you're brock party, are you giving him the discount?
Because well, I think I think you have to. I
think you have to, especially coming up this year. Now,
if he had a duplicate year like he had last
year and the year before, then absolutely not. But the
reality of the situation is you'll always be a seventh
round draft pick.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
That's just what it's gonna be. Unless you do something
like when league MVP or win a Super Bowl. When
it comes to negotiation, you'll always be mister irrelevant. So
what does that mean. Does that mean you don't get paid?
Absolutely not. But what it means is you don't have
the same bargain chips as a first round quarterback does.
(05:03):
So he has to be aware of what his value is.
You don't want to price yourself out of life changing
money for you and your family, like you don't want
to do that. If you go to brock perty and say, hey,
we like to do a four year, fifty five million
(05:24):
dollar fifty million, fifty two million dollars you know, deal
with you know, three fourths of it fully guaranteed. How
do you say, Nah, I'm just going to play on this.
You know, I'll make one point one next year and
then we'll see how it goes. Now, you can gamble
on that, but you don't have anything to fall back on.
(05:49):
So I think the forty nine ers they have the
upper hand, especially coming off the season they do now.
They should take care of him because he has kept
them relevant all the way up until a few weeks ago.
Now they're out of it. But can he win? Absolutely?
(06:10):
Can he play well? Like he had to remember in
that Super Bowl? He did everything he's supposed.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
To do right. But also I think, and your argument
is fair, it's one hundred percent fair. I get it,
I understand it. You know, maybe he says, no, I'm
not going to accept anything lower. I'll wait, I'll play
next year when everybody's help. Promise you he won't do that. No, no, no,
I know, I'm just saying because I thought, and I
(06:36):
know he's different, but I thought Juan Soto was crazy,
you know what I mean? I thought he was Ephraim
when you're twenty three years old and they offer you
a half a billion dollars. They offered him four hundred
and forty million dollars e from and you know, baseball
(06:57):
fully guaranteed contract. He's like, no, I'm not I'm worth
more than that. I'm not taking it.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
But you know why because he knew show Hay was coming. Yeah,
but he knew what was about to happen.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
But the only problem is, and I agree that there
was a chance, but also you know how baseball is.
You can get hit in the face. You could get hurt. Yeah,
you could have rare but you could get you could
you could have a down year or two. Right, I'm
just saying like, yeah, I got you. Yeah, maybe you'll
(07:31):
never get you know that again. I I the idea
that he went from four point forty to seven sixty
five is and obviously you needed two suitors, right, you
had the Bends and Yankees in the biggest city, and
it worked out for him. But anyway, in Brock's case,
I just can't. If I'm the forty nine ers, I
(07:53):
respect what he's been able to do. But I also
know that Shanahan, for whatever reason, was able to win
with other quarterbacks, got to the super Bowl right with
Jimmy Garoppolo because of all the other talent around him.
And while he's a part of it, he's not it.
(08:14):
He's not the only reason why you want to win
to the super Bowl last year.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Okay, let me be part of it. Let me just
put it in perspective. Yep.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
Okay, three years, thirty nine starts right, sixty seven percent completion,
nine thousand yards, sixty one touchdowns, twenty five interceptions, passing
rating of one four point five, three year sample size.
(08:50):
You can't tell me that's not worth high market quarterback play.
Trevor Lawrence never had it. I don't even know if
Dak Prescott had it in a three year span.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
I'm not I'm not disputing that, but I'm telling you
Daniel Jones never had it that. My counter is we
we You didn't get us to the super Bowl because
we were floundering and we needed a missing You were
a missing piece as a quarterback. We already got there
without you. I'm not disputing the numbers of what he
(09:27):
was able to do.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
Yeah, but all he's doing is playing the positions.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
No, I get that.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
But but but if you ask him to do something,
he gonna do it.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
No, And I get it, But do you go out
and give this guy fifty five million dollars a year?
And you saw this year when all the pieces weren't
in place and everybody won grade he wasn't as consistent
or as dynamic as he was when everybody was healthy
and everybody was there. And sometimes as a quarterback. And
(09:57):
I'll bring this up, and you remember this, Davante Adams
when he's with the Packers and Aaron Rodgers. I remember,
and this was this might have been one of the
reasons that Aaron Rodgers won the MVP that year. Do
you remember they went to Arizona and the Cardinals was
seven and oh? You remember that a couple of years ago,
(10:18):
and they went to Arizona, no Davante Adams, whatever, and
they won the game and the desert without their big
hoss or whatever. And I want to say, the Packers
without Davanta Adams with something like seven and oh in
their last seven games. And all I'm saying is, even
without your your big gun, sometimes your quarterback can still
(10:40):
win for you. I don't know if we saw that
this year.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
But also what I'm saying is you take Joe Burrow's
first three years, right, and compared to Brock Purties first
three years, right, there's comparison. The numbers are the numbers.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
Yeah, but the difference is that the Bengals couldn't couldn't
win a playoff game.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
You remember, Oh I do I do?
Speaker 1 (11:03):
They had? Yeah, they had good teams. I'm just forgetting
the coach's name. My god, uh, Marvin Marvin H. Lewis.
Marvin Lewis, dude, they want a ton of games. You
remember that he from They just couldn't It couldn't a
playoff game with Carson r Andy right, they was. They
lost seven playoff games under Marvin Lewis. And then and
(11:25):
this is my point about about Joe Burrow, is that
that dude shows up and not only do they win
all of usudd they go to Super Bowl like like
that the forty nine ers.
Speaker 5 (11:38):
Had.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Had the forty nine ers not been to the Super
Bowl and Rock Party got him there, that'd be totally different.
Now we're talking about something.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
But what I'm telling you is how many times you
think you can go to that will No.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
No, I'm just right.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
So if you have someone you know, that you trust,
that has a clear understanding of the offense that you're running,
and he's performing at a high level higher than others,
he's better than Jimmy Garoppolo, He's better than a Trey Lance,
He's better than any of those quarterbacks that have been there.
(12:14):
My question is, what are you looking for and where
are you going to find it?
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Is it Kirk Cousins?
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Is that?
Speaker 4 (12:22):
Do you think Kirk Cousins is going to come in
and be that much better than brock Purty. I would
not bet on that, Okay, I would not. To me,
that's bad business.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
No, I hear. So you're you're saying you're signing him
no matter what the price.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
O what I'm saying, no, no, no, he wants he wants
fifty five. He wants what he gets fifty five. He's
not getting sixty. He gets fifty five, gets fifty. I
can't do fifty five. If he wants to take a
hometown disc that's below market, that is a hometown distall.
I'm saying that he's coming off just like, yeah, but
that's a hometown discount that you don't get twenty million
(13:04):
in the home counts. That's the Dollar Tree what you're
talking about, Man, I'm all right, that's that's not Von's
the the you know, the super Saveror no, you're trying
to go to Dollar Tree.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
I'm just trying to do the four piece chicken for
five dollars.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
With the fries and it's low on the side.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
That's what I'm trying to do, all right?
Speaker 1 (13:27):
Eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox eight seven seven
nine nine six sixty three sixty nine. Where are you
on brock Party? Does he just get top dollar whatever
he deserves and has he proven to you he's that guy?
Or are you just after this down season, not terrible season,
down season? Are you a little apprehensive of of cashing
(13:51):
him out? Now he has to get paid. Don't get
me wrong, I'm not eph and I'm not there saying, oh, well,
he's got one more year, just let him make one
point one again. No, I don't think that's fair, but
I couldn't see paying them fifty five. Where are you
on brock Purty eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox?
It is the Odd Couple or a trash talking Tuesday?
(14:13):
On this Christmas Eve, Rob Parker e from Salam right
here on Fox Sports Radio, Stick and stay.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple
with Chris Brussard and Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm
Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the
iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
It is The Odd Couple Fox Sports Radio. We're broadcasting
live from the tire rach dot com studios. Tyrerach dot
com will help you get there an unmatched selection, fast,
free shipping, free roadhads of protection and over ten thousand
recommended installers. Tyrerach dot com the way tire boning should be.
And in about seven minutes, Dan Wiki from USA Today
(14:56):
the columnists will join us as well. Last call coming
up E from still a lot to get to? Where
are you on Rock Party eight seven seven ninety nine
on Fox. Ephraim is gonna sign the guys. Done enough man,
I'd do it with hesitation. I would sign him if
he gives a hometown discount. Let's go with Dre Andre
(15:18):
in Massachusetts. You're on the Couple of Fox Sports Radio.
What's up, Drake?
Speaker 5 (15:22):
What up?
Speaker 6 (15:22):
Dre?
Speaker 7 (15:23):
How you doing? Thanks taking a call?
Speaker 4 (15:25):
Happy holidays?
Speaker 1 (15:26):
Yes, hey, you got it?
Speaker 5 (15:27):
Perty Dre.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
You got a white Christmas up there in Massachusetts.
Speaker 8 (15:32):
It's warmed up.
Speaker 7 (15:33):
We got snow that came in, so a lot of
the snow is it's melting. But we got hit over
the weekend. It's Saturday Sunday. Temperature dropped and we had
some snowflakes and slurries and it was good.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
Cool.
Speaker 7 (15:44):
But right now, you know, warming up just a bit.
Rock Berdy's gonna have to warm up to a hometown discount.
As you said, Rob, He's gonna have to take that
mom and pop shop rate in order to stay with
San Francisco forty nine. If you want continuity. He understands
Kyle Shanahan's system. He knows the guy with seventeen touchdowns,
ten interceptions in this year with the forty nine ers
or what six wins? Yeah, and far out of the playoffs. Okay,
(16:06):
where is the world beater who could do it on
his own, who could put the team on his back
and prove that he was the guy?
Speaker 8 (16:11):
Where is that? Joe Burrow?
Speaker 7 (16:12):
You know what I mean? Second year in Cincinnati, you
know I'm here, and that's going to make all the difference,
and we're going to get those wins.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
It's not existent. Okay.
Speaker 9 (16:20):
So he's just a guy, you know, a very.
Speaker 7 (16:22):
Good system quarterback. So he takes a team friendly deal
that allows them to have pieces around them. Or Kyle
Shanahan and John Lynch going into the draft and they
get the next quarterback. That's how it has to be.
So Brock, I hope you do that. You're a working
class hero type of person. Don't get above you don't
get it ahead of yourself. Take the hometown deal and
continue to grow with the forty nine ers.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
Happy holidays you too, So thanks, Drey. Appreciate it, Trey,
no doubt. Brandon in Indianapolis, you're in the odd couple.
Fox Sports Radio, what's up, Brandon sitting.
Speaker 10 (16:52):
Harry my holiday man?
Speaker 1 (16:54):
Very not what you got? What you got on the
plate there, Brandon.
Speaker 10 (16:57):
Tell us, I got turkey, I got him, I got dressing.
I got green beet, wow born.
Speaker 8 (17:02):
I got they give it to me free.
Speaker 10 (17:05):
At bob Evans, I went.
Speaker 8 (17:06):
There for breakfast, a late breakfast.
Speaker 10 (17:09):
And I was told him I wanted to order the
holiday meal for two to go, and I said I'll
come back later. I went back an hour and kept
waiting and waiting and find they just give it to me.
You said here, it's on the house.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Very nice, very nice. That's awesome. Yes, where are you
on brock party?
Speaker 10 (17:27):
I think that's forty nine Ers need to keep him
and he's maybe's having a bad year because turning way,
I've been injured so much, you know, so it takes
a great left tackle.
Speaker 5 (17:37):
To be a good quarterback in the NFL.
Speaker 9 (17:40):
Say about it.
Speaker 10 (17:41):
I love your show, you guys, and I love you guys,
and you do a great job. And I love the
odd couple.
Speaker 8 (17:46):
I've been listening to it for years, and I've listened
to Fox for years.
Speaker 10 (17:51):
Thank you, guys.
Speaker 1 (17:52):
I appreciate that.
Speaker 5 (17:54):
And all that have you brought me to kick gass
to man.
Speaker 1 (17:58):
I appreciate that, all right, yep, thank you. That's very nice.
Josh in Minnesota, you're on the couple of Fox Sports Radio.
What's up, Josh?
Speaker 6 (18:06):
Hey, Mary, Christmas, gentlemen, Merry Christmas.
Speaker 8 (18:11):
School.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
Vikings, Oh go Vikings. Okay, there you go.
Speaker 5 (18:14):
I got you, Hey, Rock Berdy. With the injuries forty
nine ers have had this year, I don't think there's.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
Five of the maybe five of the quarterbacks in the
NFL could come in that system and win this year.
Speaker 6 (18:28):
I say, Rock Bertie, pay the man.
Speaker 3 (18:30):
Okay, that's fat.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
So are you paying them fifty five sixty?
Speaker 10 (18:33):
Is that where you are not paying him forty forty five?
Speaker 1 (18:37):
But he from u CE, are you with that?
Speaker 4 (18:39):
He from forty He's not gonna take forty that's five. Yeah,
that's that Daniel Jones money. He's not.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
He's way better than Daniel Jones by a mile.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
Right, Daniel Jones and the should have got twenty five.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
Yeah, that's it.
Speaker 4 (18:51):
You're absolutely right, but he's not taking for forty five.
Speaker 3 (18:54):
Thank you, Josh, appreciate you. Course's insulting.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
That's actually no, no, that that would be. And that's
why I'm not even talking about that. I'm just saying
there's got to be some sort of deal there.
Speaker 4 (19:03):
Yeah, fifty to fifty five right in there, in between
fifty two to fifty five, somewhere in there.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
I think that's where's warranted. I think that's where he is.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
Yeah. Uh, Corey in Fresno, you're in the odd couple
of Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
What's up? Corey?
Speaker 9 (19:20):
Hey, Rob, Merry Christmas to you guys.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
Merry Christmas. You see we working hard for your entertainment
dollar on the holiday I tell you.
Speaker 9 (19:27):
What, working hard on Christmas Eve you brought into great
Ephraim Salam. I got to listen to Ephraim over the
years on different shows, different time slots. So yeah, honored
to get to talk to you guys tonight.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
Thank you for that.
Speaker 9 (19:39):
As always, Rob, you know, I call right before Christmas
just to tell you guys, we appreciate everything that you
guys do for us as listeners. It's a wonderful show.
I know you guys put a lot of work into
it and it's very much appreciated.
Speaker 8 (19:51):
So thank you, Thank you.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
That means a lot. It does, because it really does.
It does. And you know, The Odd Couple's been on
for seven years now here on Fox Sports Radio, and
we've always been an inclusive show from you know, with
the callers and and different people being on and so
you know, it means a lot, it really does. So
all right, thank you so much. All right, let's get
(20:14):
you caught up Dan Woiki's coming up. But first monthy Blagos.
Speaker 11 (20:19):
Monthsy, Yes, you guys are pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
I'll agree to that, you know, I mean, you know,
just because the update people fight over being on the
Odd Cokes.
Speaker 11 (20:27):
I mean, it's true, It's true I have to request it,
but we appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
Happy to be hanging out with you guys. On this
Christmas Eve.
Speaker 11 (20:35):
There is the Hawaii Ball going on. In college football.
South Florida is currently beating San Jose State twenty one
to seven. In fact, San Jose State scored and then
South Florida returned the kickoff for a touchdown. Immediately after that,
San Jose State has the ball. Yeah, has the ball
again with one minute to go in.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
The first half of this Hawaii Bowl.
Speaker 11 (20:55):
But Tomorrow Christmas Day, a doubleheader in the NFL. Don't
miss it, Chief said Steelers that's at one eastern. Ravens
at Texans that's at four thirty eastern. There's also five
games in the NBA. Don't miss that. It starts with
the Spurs and the Knicks at twelve eastern and it
ends with the Nuggets and the Suns at ten thirty eastern.
So plenty of sports on Christmas Day. A couple of
(21:16):
news in the NFL little news tidbits here, like Aaron
Rodgers Apparently he's dealing with an MCL injury, but he
is gonna play Sunday against Buffalo. He says, Yesterday, the
Packers played the Saints, well really it was just the
Packers playing, but Matt Laflora announced that wide receiver Christian
Watson suffered a bruce knee in last night's win, but
he could play this Sunday against Minnesota as well. Tinans
(21:37):
announced that Mason Rudolph is going to be their starting
quarterback again for Sunday's game against the Jaguars. And something
to keep an eye on. Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker
the third listed as a non participant for a second
straight day. He did suffer an ankle injury in Week sixteen.
But Seattle plays the Bears this Thursday. And lastly here
Russell Wilson gifted his offensive line a pretty ridiculous gift.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
But I'm into it.
Speaker 11 (22:00):
They got a ten thousand dollars gift card to Airbnb
that they can use anywhere in the world. They also
got a Louis a ton of Duffel bag and Stealers colors.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
That's what I'm That's what I'm into. Not a Duffel bag, yes, yes,
that's what I mean. The gift card for Airbnb. I
don't know that does that come with rad hair? Thats
what it comes with.
Speaker 11 (22:22):
Yeah, like I think that the Duffel bag is what's
really cool. He also gave them custom made stealers good
Man brand shoes, which is his clothing brand.
Speaker 1 (22:31):
From what's the best gift you got? You went off?
That's a lineman. What was the best gift?
Speaker 3 (22:35):
Oh Man watches? Televisions?
Speaker 4 (22:38):
Did you cast them in? Did you cast No? No,
ten thousand dollars massage chair. We had an option to
pick between a massage chair ATV and like, uh custom
made engraved shotguns.
Speaker 8 (22:53):
What you got?
Speaker 3 (22:54):
You got the chair. I got the chair chair.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
I got one of those chair, not ten thousand dollars,
but I've been one of those chair. There's nothing like it.
Speaker 4 (23:01):
I mean, you get in that thing and it's it
is worth every single penny of it. But I've gotten
uh Louis luggage. Just you know, over the thirteen years, man,
you uh get some stuff. Man, I miss it. I
thought I was coming in here and getting some stuff
from you.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
Rob all the money?
Speaker 4 (23:20):
You got all the money, man. No, I don't get
a fill in gift to somebody that I'm feeling. It's
Christmas eve Man, Thank you Monty for your beautiful gift
that you gave me and that gave one to Rob.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
I appreciate that.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
You get me from it. It's in this studio, but
you're in a different studio, so that's why I meet.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
I meet you out in front.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
There you go, all right, thank you, Monty, have a
great night.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
All right. It is the odd couple coming to your
live from the Tirerock dot Com studios. Let's welcome in
Dann Wiki from USA Today. It's a columnist covering mostly
college sports. Damn, what's up? Merry Christmas? Happy holidays?
Speaker 8 (23:58):
Yeah, hey, thanks? How were you doing good?
Speaker 3 (24:00):
Good?
Speaker 1 (24:01):
Yes? And can we talk about the college football Playoff
that everybody everybody wanted, like so many teams got left out.
They're deserving and we got garbage bad games. How surprised
were you that the game as bad as they were?
Speaker 8 (24:19):
Well, I don't think it's all that surprising when you
look at the history of the college football Playoff, even
when it was four teams, you.
Speaker 10 (24:25):
Had a lot of blowouts in the semi.
Speaker 8 (24:28):
Finals as well. And I just think what we saw
is there is a drop off between you know, probably
the top six and everybody else. And also home field
advantage is a huge thing. And if you are playing
on the road and there was a lot of cold
weather and stuff like that, I think the road teams
(24:48):
are really up against it. They were lower seeded for
a reason, and the better teams performed well and won
pretty easily.
Speaker 4 (24:58):
Let me ask you this, I was never I was
a proponent of expansion, but I thought twelve was too much.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
I was over to Tome.
Speaker 4 (25:06):
I don't think there's any season in college football where
twelve teams are good enough to vie for a national championship.
What was your sweet spot in terms of number? For me,
it was six, maybe at the most eight. I thought
we should win. We should have gone six first and
then maybe expanding to eight later.
Speaker 8 (25:26):
Yeah, I mean I think all things being equal, I
would have preferred eight. But at the end of the day,
you have to understand what's driving this thing, which is
my conferences. Well it's money, for sure, but the conferences
own the playoff. And so now in this new world,
especially where you have sixteen and eighteen team leagues, if
(25:50):
you have a playoff where conference champions get automatic bids,
you have four power conferences and then you have the
group of five that they've given one spot to. So
that's already five teams who are getting in regardless, and
if you only have eight in the playoffs, then that
(26:10):
only leaves three at large spots. So you know, say
one goes to Notre Dame, well you know then the
SEC and the Big ten are not getting in those
multiple teams every year like they want, so they keep,
you know, wanting more for themselves. And that's why it's
twelve and that's why they go to fourteen. Those two
(26:32):
conferences can have more at large bids for themselves.
Speaker 1 (26:35):
Man, I understand that, but it's just it's not what
you want to see though. I mean, don't we want
to see some competitive games, and you were right about
the four team playoff. We saw blowouts there. I just
think going forward, this is going to be interested. I
know it's not going the other way. It's only going
to keep going and they'll get as much as they
(26:56):
can as far as money as possible. Bill Belichick in
North Carolina, how surprised were you that he wound up there?
And how much of this was the nepotism part? I
know he is not about his son getting the job
after he's done. How much was that a part of it?
Speaker 5 (27:19):
Well?
Speaker 8 (27:19):
I think if Bill Belichick had an option to coach
in the NFL, that's where he would be coaching. It
was very clear last year and even from the beginnings
of the coaching Carouseol this year that Belichick really really
wanted to have one more chance to coach in the NFL.
But there's not a franchise it's willing to give him
(27:43):
control over personnel.
Speaker 9 (27:46):
You know.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
Now, Dan, let me ask you this, I did hear this,
and tell you if you haven't heard this, eph that
he was offered the Atlanta Falcons job. That he was
offered that job. Let it sit there for two or
three days, and he was haggling about power and the
structure and all that, and then they moved off of him.
(28:07):
And then that's how it went from that. He was
actually offered that job. Did you ever hear.
Speaker 8 (28:13):
That, Dan, Well, not specifically that, but there may be
some truth there, because the Atlanta Falcons had already hired
a front office and they had people in place, and
they just wanted Bill Belichick to come coach.
Speaker 6 (28:27):
And not do anything else.
Speaker 8 (28:28):
And yeah, so there may have been disagreement about that,
but ultimately that was a year ago and the Falcons
were really the only organization that had any serious contact
with Belichick, So you know, he surveyed his options and
he didn't feel like it was a great chance to
get back there. This year. Here was this North Carolina
(28:49):
thing popping up, and I do think it, you know,
intrigued him in some ways, even if it maybe wasn't
his first choice. So when you have all that context,
I guess I'm not too surprised. But when you look
at where college sports is right now, mostly the coaches
are going the other way.
Speaker 6 (29:07):
They're running to the nfright, they're running to the.
Speaker 8 (29:09):
NBA, or they're retiring because you know, they don't want
to deal with all of this pay for play and
IL all the different things that are causing chaos the
transfer portal. So Belichick, we'll see how he does. I
don't know. I don't you know, it's not really been
established yet that his son has any sort of head
(29:32):
coach and waiting deal or anything like that. His son
was at Washington as a defensive coordinator and was doing fine.
Speaker 10 (29:38):
So it's not like his son needed a job, you know.
Speaker 8 (29:41):
I don't know. I do think he genuinely wants the
coach and this was his option. So here we go.
Is it going to work.
Speaker 2 (29:49):
I have no.
Speaker 4 (29:49):
Clue what a success looked like for Bill Belichick. Is
it national championship or a bust?
Speaker 8 (29:59):
I think it's making the house football playoffs. You know,
only one team is gonna win a national championship, and
it's usually not going to be North Carolina. North Carolina
has been one of the most perplexing programs in college
sports really for as long as I've been doing this
twenty years, because people kind of look at the location
(30:22):
and the campus and the brand and how successful they
are and all these other sports. And there is a
lot of talent in the state of North Carolina, and
it's not that far from you know, the DC Baltimore area,
it's not that far from Atlanta, Like there's players around.
Yet nobody's ever been able to leverage all of the
(30:43):
stuff North Carolina can provide into a consistently winning football program,
and so it's kind of been the sleeping giant. Maybe
Bill Belichick's the guy to wake it up if he
can get into the college football playoff And like, I'm
not going to rule that out. I don't know about
year one, but within you know, two, three, four years,
(31:05):
then I think it will be a huge success.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
Uh, let me ask you about college basketball and where
if it's in you see the pushback on fans in
the NBA with all the threes and the style of
play and whatnot. I still think probably college basketball still
has teams that play different styles compared to what the
(31:29):
coaches want them to play, whereas the NBA seems to
have just gone crazy for the three ball. Do you
look at college basketball a little different from the NBA, Well.
Speaker 8 (31:42):
Yeah, because the players in college aren't a skilled and
you know, it's harder for college players to make jump shots.
I mean just go look at any game out there. Yeah,
there's some good shooters in college, for sure, but from
a team perspective, you know, at night to night, you're
gonna see a lot of miss wide open shots. You
(32:02):
don't see that in the NBA because the players are
just way better. And so, yeah, the game's going to
be in college a little bit more inside out.
Speaker 10 (32:14):
The big guy.
Speaker 8 (32:15):
You know, we saw last year Zach Edy leading Purdue
to the national championship game. It's just a very different game,
different rules, different three point line. So you know, there's
always a pendulum that's swinging about what's in vogue for
a style of play. But I just don't think. You know,
(32:36):
there are some teams in college that have been heavily
reliant on three pointers and have done well. But that
is a hard formula to sustain. Because once again, in
the NCAA tournament in March, which is what everybody's trying
to do, win a national championship, go to a final four.
It's a one and done tournament. It's not a seven
game series. You got to win, you know, six games
(32:59):
in a row to do that. And you can't go
cold from three. If you go cold, you're gonna get beat, right.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
No doubt, all right, Hey Dann Wyke, you we appreciate
it USA today man, Happy holidays. Merry Christmas to you

Speaker 5 (35:55):
Hey? I just wanted to talk about that college football playoff.
And I know that these games were a little bit
of a out, but I mean it gives these smaller
schools a chance to get it so when the underdog
story maker, it's it's difficult to play on the road
out Ohio State or at Penn State at Beaver Stadium.
These are big schools, but you never know what could happen.
(36:18):
And I know that it seems ridiculous, but I love
the college football playoffs because I've seen kids not just
lead their school and quit playing.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
I get it, but don't we want to be but
don't we want to be entertained from don't we want
to see like you want to see a good football game?
And and having I understand people don't want the kids
to just that's it. You're done with their career. They
don't get to play again. But does that mean we
need to sit through a fifty five nothing game so
that they get to play one more game? That's the
(36:49):
part that I'm not with. Thanks for the call. Appreciate
Sherry in California. You're in the odd couple of Fox
Sports Radio. You want to the last calls Sherry.
