(00:21):
s R. You're listening to the Best of the Odd
Couple with Chris Brush and Rod Parker. That game was
there for the take it right right. Well, let me
ask you this because after that game, Lebron said that look,
and he's right, it's not instant oatmeal. You know, it
doesn't come together right away. It's gonna take some time.

(00:42):
Rajon Rondo, the other veteran or you know, accomplished veteran
on the team, he said, we have to be patient
like teachers. He told that to the Undefeated. So what
I want to ask you, Rob Parker is do the
Lakers have time to be patient? They are, in fact
in a Western conference, after all, do they have time

(01:02):
to be paid? This is the thing I don't and
and this is why I'm saying when a game is
on the table like that, I would rather see Lebron
go for it even if he doesn't get it, but
go for exactly you could be owing two and already
piling up elves. In the Western Conference, And this is
the other thing. Last year, the difference between being a

(01:24):
third seed and an eighth seed in the Western Conference
was two games. Portland won forty nine games, and the
team that finished eighth was that who was that? Whoever was?
I forgot Minnesota? They won forty seven So it wasn't
a big spread between being playing the first round, you know, right,

(01:45):
being having home court in the first round, or being
on the road or being out after the first round.
So that's why I'm saying that these games are important,
and that's what I took away from it that nothing
had really changed yet. I'm not I'm not gonna say
they want anything or lost anything off of one game. No,
that did not happen. But I don't know how much
time do they have. Can they go to and ten

(02:09):
to start the start the season and hope to regroup.
I don't know if they want to go. I'm just saying,
you can't mean in Miami when they started, Miami was
way better than this team. Come on, let's be honest.
This is kids and cast. True, but this is kids
and cast. But you think two and ten is actually
a possibility, I could just throwing that out. I'm just

(02:31):
throwing it out because they could be on two yeah right,
but they not. If they're two and ten, it's really
gonna be like I get you, though. The bottom line
is every game in the Western Conference is important because
it could be one game that keeps you out of
the playoffs. I don't think this team will be in
danger of missing the playoffs. But what I'll say is
why I think they can't necessarily afford a slow start

(02:54):
is because this is a team rob and I'm sure
we've talked about it just off the air when they've
put it together. This is a team that has the
greatest potential for volatility in the league. And I mean
Land Stevenson. If they're losing games and he's not playing
a tun or not playing particularly well, he could go

(03:16):
off Yon Ronsar Ray gion Rondo, who has had problems,
by his own admission, with every coach he's played for
no doubt about it. He could go off Linzo Ball.
What if he's not playing a lot not last night
they said he's on the minute's restriction. But I don't

(03:36):
know if he would have played more even if he
weren't on a minute, because he was also a little
passive in the first half. He finished with seven points.
He was okay. I mean, he ended up playing okay.
But but if what if he's just another role player,
which it looks like he will be, and they're losing,
does LaVar make a re emergence and start talking, you know,
I mean, that's my point, Like, and then Luke Walton,

(03:58):
Luke Walton if they start slowly? Now, when when Lebron
and his Heat team started slowly in Miami, the players
weren't happy with Eric Sposter, but pat Riley, who was
running the organization, he was like, look, if you're gonna win,
it's gonna be with Eric Sposter. If he hadn't asked,
Bolster's back spoister may have been gone. But Roley's probably

(04:19):
the only guy who was able to pull some you know,
have muscles against the players, Any any GM, any GM,
certainly Magic and Rob Polinka or Magic have enough cloud
that they can tell Lebron and Rondo or whoever else
they need to tell Walton Luton, Luke's our guy. But

(04:41):
the only differences, right, the only differences. Eric Sposture was
Riley's guy. He did. But but Rob Polinka and Magic
didn't hire Luke Walton, so they're not they're not bound
to him the way that that that Riley was with
Eric Spolstra, that was his guy. That's my point, right
that if they start slow Lee in addition the players

(05:01):
popping off, and you know even Lebron, I mean, he's
been passive aggressive. He could get on social media and
start tweeting or putting out Instagram post. It just caused drama.
He's been known to do that. It could get crazy
from that standpoint, but also it could cost Luke Walton
his job. Right. Be sure to catch live editions of

(05:22):
The Odd Couple with Chris Brussar then Rob Parker weekdays
at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio and the iHeartRadio app. And we always bring a
celebrity interview to you every Friday, and this week on
Celebrity Corner is Michael Rappaport, the great actor, director, author, podcaster.

(05:44):
You can follow him on Twitter at at Michael Rappaport.
And let's get right to it. Mike. We want to
welcome you into the Odd couple. Lebron James first game
as a Laker last night. What you think I that? Um,
I mean, you know, he was Lebron James. Um, you
know it's game one, you know, he he he looked

(06:07):
like Lebron James is supposed to look. Um, he hasn't
fallen off the cliff. Um. I think the team, you know,
didn't have it all together. Um, you know, I thought
it was it was a good It was a good
first It was a good first game. You know, you know,
all off steav all off season, people have been like, oh,

(06:28):
you're so complimentary to the Lakers, You're so complimentary. I'm
a little bit surprised, man, you've been I'm starting to
think you actually like Lebron. Well well no, now, well no,
see now they woke up a sleeping beast because the
next day after after Lebron uh and and the Lakers
uh you know started, I I go low and behold.

(06:51):
I knew I'd have something because Dame Lillard was the
star of the game. Um, the Lakers lost, But all
we're showing is Lebron James is dunk. And then it
reminds me that Lebron James, who's you know, thirty three
or thirty four years old, never entered the dunk contest.
Yet he's thirty three, thirty four, he could still do it,

(07:12):
and and and you know he took all the thunder
away um from from a very very great Dame uh
Li Lord Portland Trailblazers performance like so um, uh yeah,
they lost, unlike my Knicks, who won their own right,
we're gonna get it. We're gonna get We gonna give
you twenty times to big up your knicks because they
scored forty. Probably need to slow down, but we'll We'll

(07:35):
give you your time to crow about the Knicks because
you know it's gonna be short lived, right, But Mike,
let me ask you this. One of the big things
when they put the team together, though, was people criticized
and said, where's the three point shooting coming from? They
missed their first fifteen three pointers looking like the uh
Houston Rockets. But uh is that gonna be a problem

(07:57):
for them, that three point shooting, especially in this league.
I don't think that anything's in any problem. I think
that it's gonna be a similar a similar thing to
his first season in Miami. They're gonna go on run
um they're gonna, they're gonna follow. I don't think they're
gonna be as good as that team, obviously, but but
you know, I think that josh Hard could shoot. I

(08:19):
think that Lebron can shoot. I think that Kuzma can shoot.
I think along the line, somebody's getting traded because I
think they have won too many guys that does the
same thing on that team. Um, Listen, you know where
I am with Lebron, James and and and I want to,
but I'm a Laker fan in general, Like I never

(08:39):
want to. I never could root against anything Magic Johnson does.
And it's like rooting, Uh, you know, betting against Lebron
is like betting against Tom Brady, betting against Magic in
the eighties, betting against Sugar Ray Leonard. Like, they're gonna
they're gonna figure it out. Um by by April, Uh,
they'll they'll they'll know what they're good at, what they're

(09:00):
not good at. And I really expect that team to
be a major problem all this They're not making the
playoffs and missing fifteen threes last day's Game one. They've
been hearing about missing threes from you guys the odd
couple for the last three months, so of course they're
gonna miss a few. Three my way. Christ Sorry, wait,
I got a question for you, my man. All right,

(09:21):
I saw I saw you on the TV show Loose today,
and my question is this, Are we going for mutton chops?
Are you growing a beard? I don't know what liketnt connect,
don't connect you? Yeah? Are they mutton chops or just
the beard? I don't know if I want to comment
on that, but I'm going for the beard. I'm going

(09:44):
for the beard. It is a little thin in certain places.
That's why it looks like mutton John, I know. But
you know what tho, if it doesn't connect, you could
pull off mutton shops because I got them. I don't
think so. I was looking at that today. I was
looking at wanted the little tapes, and I was like,
I'm either, I'm if it's gonna look like that, I'm

(10:05):
gonna have to shave it off and got shot. I
don't think I can do the mutton shot you did.
Your wife like the beard. She likes she likes it.
She's fine with the way I was before with the gotee,
so she it wouldn't matter to her. But yeah, I
don't think I can do that mutton shot. You just
ask them, You just ask him. Does his wife like
the beard? Does your wife like the mutton shots? Because

(10:28):
my friends and I think she definitely wouldn't like the
mutton chops. Okay, because it's not a beard. Right now,
I'm trying to say as a bear. But hey, all right, um,
let's let me ask you this, Mike. There have been
so many reports coming out. Well, first of all, there

(10:48):
there are actual things that happened. Kyrie Irving left Lebron,
Paul George did an interview with the Lakers when Lebron went,
wouldn't even meet with Magic. And now there's reports Jimmy Butler,
uh Kawhi Leonard don't want to play with Lebron with
the Lakers, although we're we're not sure if that's true,
but those are the reports. And then Stephen A. Smith,
our guy, our buddy over ESPN. He says that Damian

(11:13):
Lillard doesn't want to go play with the Lakers. What
do you make of this? Do you think this stuff
is true? And if so, what does it say? Then
a lot of these guys are avoiding playing with Lebron.
It says that not everybody wants to play with Lebron
James that not everybody wants to defer. Not everybody wants
to play with you know. Um it's says people. You know,

(11:36):
there's some competitiveness left. Um. I don't think it's like, oh,
I want to go play with Lebron James. You know,
not everybody wants to, you know, play with a guy
that brings the circus to town. Not everybody wants to
play with a guy who might throw you onto the bus.
Um And some people want to beat Lebron James. So
Dame Lillard's definitely not playing with him. He's you know,
his attitude is, you know, come play with me, I'm

(12:00):
gonna play against you. And he showed that last night. Um,
Jimmy Butler is all over the place right now. But
but I think it's good. I think that, you know,
first of all, this whole thing with like even in football,
Odell mention in La. It's like we're in La. It's
a cool place, but it's not like, you know, like
it rains, you know, silver dollars out here. Maybe there's
other places that are cool. There's other teams, there's other

(12:22):
big markets. And I'm glad that everybody wants to play
with the Brune James, I seriously think that one of
those players on that Lakers team is gonna get traded
um um by February, because I don't. I think there's
there's too many guys that do the same thing. And
I think that you know, you know, the way the
Warriors have it is really in sync um and and

(12:44):
I don't think that this is gonna work um with
without a shifting made um. So I think it's a
good thing that not everybody wants to play with them.
I don't, it's just like crazy, everybody wants to come
to LA and play for the Lakers, combles the eye.
A couple of Chris Brussar Rod Parker were joined by
Michael Rappaport for Celebrity Corner. Mike, you've been you've been

(13:08):
hard on LaVar ball and he has been silent for months?
What is going on with LaVar? Where's he had? Did
you get to him and be like, look, we got
Lebron now you can't be talking mass or what I mean?
What is he gonna say at this point? You know
his son is a grown man. What more can he say? Um?
I don't know if it was magic or just his family,

(13:30):
like the kid had so much scrutiny on him last year. Um,
obviously it turned into a circus or whether or not
he lived up to expectations. Didn't he had he had
an injury, you know, the pressure was too much. And
maybe he's just like cutting the cord as he should,
as any parents should, uh when their kid is a

(13:50):
professional and and and during control of their life. He's
not living with him. He's a grown young man now
and he shouldn't. He should let let him, let him
fall and let it. It's him chirping away and screaming, yelling.
Is it's gonna change whether or not h he has
a future in the NBA, which, in my opinion, remains
to be seen. Um So I think that he's, you know,

(14:12):
taking a step back. I wouldn't, wouldn't the money that
he's not gonna not gonna hear. You don't think we're
gonna hear. You don't think we're gonna hear from him
all year. I think that I don't know, I don't
know who. I can't see what's gonna be vul or
Lebron James's alter ego. Lebron blames that Lebron blames. Have

(14:37):
you you said that before? I'm sure I've said it before,
but honestly, because you guys are my dudes, and I
say this superstar all the time, and he says he
said this. You say this to everybody. I don't say
it to everybody. You guys could use it. Credit me
or not credit me. I don't care. You guys are
the professors. I love both of you, guys that I
love your show for real, well, I appreciate that. Have

(14:59):
you on the Marshalls You have to get the Lonzo
twos that are on sale now since they cut the price.
Have you gotten a pair? Hell much those shoes? If
if if I was gonna go get those shoes, if
I was gonna spend two hundred dollars on some shoes,
I spent two hundred dollars on a shoes of a
player who deserves his own shoes. Everybody wants to be

(15:21):
a businessman, but you're not really in business man. The
dude might not be in the NBA and three years
the way things are going, you know, yo, he could
seriously not be in the NBA and three years, Like
there's other great players, great talents, great hype that don't
make it. He shoots air balls consistently. He almost shot

(15:41):
one last night to scrutiny and and and all the
chaos around him. That guy, I wish him luck, but
this is not guarantee that he's gonna make it in
this league. There's no doubt about it. Hey, let's switch
to your favorite team, the New York Knickerbockers. And uh,
they had a big win over at last up scored
forty nine points. Is that Mike the second quarter right?

(16:01):
A franchise history? And uh, do you like this team?
I know that then there are a player or two
away which they have money to spend in the off season.
But do you like the young nucleus that they have
right now? You know what? I really do like the
Knicks team. And I like that they are so young
and they are so impressionable because I think they're learning

(16:23):
from Fizdale of the right way and and the the
the ghosts of New York Knicks Pass, the Bad Coat,
the Bad Coast of New York Knicks Pass. I think
are gonna get waned out, um because these kids don't
know any better. And I think in a in a
way that's a good thing. We're not winning the championship. Um,
but uh, you know the Garden was rocking. All the

(16:47):
Knicks needs is these guys had to learn professional basketball,
play hard and and and let Fizdale be the leader
until the on the court leader um emerges because we
don't know who that is at this point. But but
I think he's got them um charged up and fired
up about playing in New York and that it is cool,

(17:07):
that it is sexy, that it is historic, that it
is a dope place to play, and uh, you know,
we need some players to come there. But I really
think that when you have that kind of young talent
um with a vocal, emotional guy like Fizdale, who really
you know, he's got them running around and he's got
them in shape. I think we're on our way. Um. Um.

(17:30):
You know, there's there's work to be done and there's
players needed, but we're on our way. I think it's
it's a really they hired the right guy, um, and
he did the right thing. I mean, we don't have
any veterans, which I think with all we've been through,
is is good at this point. It's the Eye couple
Christmas Sorry and Rod Parker joined by the Great Michael
Rappaport on our Celebrity Corner. Mike, last question, we got

(17:50):
about thirty seconds. What do you make you mentioned getting veterans.
There's rumors out there that Kevin Durant has eyes for
New York. What do you make it as you getting
excited about it or what. Kevin Durant ain't going anywhere.
They're gonna win another championship and then they're gonna re
up again. He ain't going anywhere. He's comfortable out there. Um.

(18:12):
I think he likes all the rules of regulations of
Northern California, and I think all the money that he's
making and the tech and all that stuff, and I
think he likes laid back Northern cal I don't think
he's going anywhere. And I think that team is gonna
win and then re up for one more time. Chris,
I really don't. I'm not excited about it. Yeah, Chris

(18:32):
thinks that too, especially with the opening of the new
arena next year. Yeah. I just don't see it happening.
And I don't think he wants to scoot here. And
if he came, listen, Kevin Durant on the side of
the Empire State Building is a very sexy, cool thing
that they'll throw at him. But I just don't think
he I don't think he wants Why would he want
to leave. I think they'll do one more we don't

(18:54):
or lose, because if they lose, will be like, yeah,
if they lose, they're probably deaf. I would think he
definitely go back. All right, Michael. It's a pleasure, but
great job, man. We'll get you. We'll get you in
the studio next time, any anytime you want you. This
is this is a this is our time year and
I love our talking week all right, brother, thanks man,

(19:15):
We'll see you soon. All right. That's Michael Rapp Report.
And be sure to catch live editions of The Odd
Couple with Chris Brussard and Rob Parker weekdays at seven
pm Eastern four pm Pacific. And we're always happy to
bring in our next guest. He's a Fox Sports NFL
insider and you can follow him on Twitter at at

(19:35):
Jay Glazer. Jay. Welcome to The Odd Couple. Buddy. What's
going on, buddy? A good man, We're great, ready for
another great NFL weekend. I know you saw has been great.
It's been a it's it's been fantastic. This year. It's
been a great year. It's been a great it's so
fun again and and and there's so much more to go,

(19:56):
That's the thing, you know what I mean, Like we're
only freaking week six. It's unbelieving we got and then
we talked about this a couple of weeks ago. We're
just kind of we're just about to sear it like
week eight. Really, who teams are? So it's been this
fun and teams are still jelling in the count five
because nobody really does to the preseason anymore. You know,
you really don't find teams know their rhythm until later

(20:20):
later in the season, now much later than it used
to be. So I think it's gonna get even more exciting. Well,
I know you saw what Odell Beckham senior, not junior,
but senior, tweeted about. I don't know if his twitters.
Why do you say you know I saw it. I
don't follow my Twitter, but you I know you're aware
of it. You're aware of it, right? What he is

(20:42):
John Marra and him throwing the chair And how is
John Marra going to respond to this? Or how do
you think he'll take this? Will he laugh at all?
I don't think he's gonna respond to anything on Twitter,
to be honest with you. Um. You know the interesting
pea was is that the Giants were and you saw
in the off season they were it looked like you

(21:03):
two were headed to the divorce and John Member was
really raptatious. UM and Pat Shermer was the one who
came in and said, no, I could I could carryl this,
I could help it. He is, Uh. And thinking about
Odellis he doesn't there's literally not a bad bone in
his body. But the stuff he's doing is that of
a bad teammate. And you know it's Um and Pat

(21:26):
I think saw the good nodelity, he saw what a
player is and when you're around him, you're like, you
want to be around the kid. He's a great kid.
And he's like, no, I think I can get him
to be this. You know, he's gonna be this great teammate. Uh.
And then he does stuff that he breaks the code
and you know when this happened, I know Sherman was
furious and brought him in and you know I had
him talking to the the team and you know when he

(21:48):
first talked to the team about the comments, he was
up Saturday night and players didn't really know what he
was talking about the goddess. And then the next day
the comments came out. They're like, oh, that's what that was.
And you know, finally they you know, at least one
guy walked, hey, you broke the code. The man. If
this was the giants of Michael Strahan and Jumbo Elliott

(22:09):
and Jesse Armstead and Eric William Walberts, you would have
you'd have a bunch of people at your locker waiting
for you. This would not happen. No, well, here's the thing,
you know, look, oh that was that they do follow him.
He's the one that don't wants to be like you there, Yeah,
when he does, that's why all of a sudden, you

(22:29):
see guys, you see other people on the sidelines, cars
and the roughness are Stirling Separd, you know, having now
an issue with what was it a class week, the
vent or whatever was, Yeah, the fan whoever was, They're
gonna follow him. Um, but that's not what you want.
If your leader, you want you don't want him doing this.

(22:50):
You want your leader keep a thing. You want your leader,
you know, motivating guys from the right way. And and
that's the thing like you get around Odell and you're
trying to get you know, I know, he'll have you
convinced that he knows what the white things is to
do now, and he knows he has to he's grown up.
And then this happens, and you know it's there's a
reason why in the locker room too. Here's the other

(23:12):
thing I want. There's a reason why the Johnson the
second tip of the draft. They're a bad team. They're
bad culture, bad locker room. And it wasn't gonna happen
over night. The fix wasn't gonna I think we thought
they got sa Quan in there, Odell's but now they
got a contract. It wasn't got a couple of linemen,
it would all be fixed. But the culture has been
bad in there for a while. That's why the second
pick room draft. Jay helped me on Baker Mayfield. You

(23:34):
know we had that big came in look great against
the Jets, had one hundred percent quarterback rating. But it's
been going the other way going south of late. His
last game one touchdown, two picks, and a fifty two
point six quarterback rating. Uh, he still needs some seasoning.
Oh yeah, I think guys Peyton man who first couple

(23:54):
of years were in good Troy Hitman's work. I mean
it's not you know, for somebody to come out out
right off the bat and just shine as a rookie.
It's kind of it's not normal. Um. You know, you
saw Jared Goss's first year, so given need to catch
up in the pro defense ascend at you. But I
told you guys since day well, he's different. He is

(24:16):
just different, curious. He had what's behind his rip cage
you cannot teach. And you know there's guys that may
be more physically talented, but there's not too many more
guys more confidence in him and to many guys, we're
gonna work at it the right way, and he is
he is. And the thing I like about Baker also
is that you already know how he's gonna be when

(24:38):
he's a superstar. He's not suddenly going to change. If
the Brown third having success, you already know what you got.
But he has this And I think I told you
guys last time. You know we're there. You know, we
trained him in the off season, so in our MMA program,
so we got to see him that whole month of
OTAs and back then we saw stuff and we're like,

(25:00):
oh my god, this kid is When he rolls out,
it's it's weird. He rolls out, he has this release
it it almost looks like he's still running, but he
does this little thing. We're almost like he plans to
get this energy from the ground even though he's still running.
It's it's the craziest thing I've ever seen, and it's
just his release. He is gonna be a rock star
for a long time. In this week, it's the Eye Couple,
Chris Brussar, Rod Parker. We're joined by Jay Glazer. Jay.

(25:23):
The Jaguars just traded for Carlos Hide. What does this
tell us about Leonard for Anette and his health and
when he'll be back. Yeah, I think they're making sure
they have somebody else and there who they can trust
because that that team is about defense and running in
you know, they're not about putting everything on Blake portals.
They want to Blake portals just kind of not mess
it up for them and hit opportunities when they can.

(25:46):
But they need a good running game to do that.
And you know, for a Nette is a beast when
he's in there. But his hamstring is shown over and over.
You don't know when it's it's gonna tighten Portals. Speaking
of the Jaguars, I mean Portals had a good year
last year. He had his team up twenty to ten
in the fourth quarter in the AFC Championship game. Probably
you know, Jay couldn't get the big first down that
