It's The Best of the Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker! Chris and Rob share their thoughts on last night's Monday Night Football barnburner between the Chiefs and the Rams, and explain why they hope 'defense optional' games like that don't become a regular occurrence in the NFL. Plus, Rob Parker explains why he believes Patrick Mahomes 5-turnover performance may have knocked him out of the MVP race. And, Super Bowl champion Greg Jennings stops by to explain why the high-scoring affair was a result of great offense and not bad defense, and we shouldn't be surprised to see games like that become the norm around the NFL.

s R. You're listening to the Best of the Odd
Couple with Chris Brush and Rod Harker. Well Rob speaking
of hard, strong, and fast. Wow, that wasn't the defenses
last night? No defense, two of the best teams in
the NFL, and the defenses. You know, they did score
three touchdowns. Okay, but when you know the ram scored two,

(00:45):
the Chiefs score one. But when the offenses are that explosive,
you're gonna have the defense make plays occasionally. That's how
I look at it. But it was a great game.
Folks were calling it an instant classic. Some folks were saying,
and it's the best NFL game they've seen in years.
I think that's also a little prisoner of the moment

(01:06):
when you really look at the game. I'm not knocking
the game. Was it exciting? Yes? What is it rated?
The best Monday Night football ratings in four years, which
tells you about Monday Night Football. And it was one
of those games, Chris, where as it's going on, people
are texting their friends. Are you watching this, hey? Turn
on Monday Night football? Do you believe the score? How

(01:28):
many of those texts did you get from your friends, like,
you know, just in case. I mean, obviously I was
watching the game, but you have friends will get caught
up doing something else. There's been a lot of you know,
even though this was one of those high profile games,
people talking about maybe is this a preview of the
Super Bowl? Blah blah blah blah blah. And you before
the game yesterday on the show, thought that it would

(01:49):
be forty in the forties, would score in the forties,
And I underestimated. You underestimated because it's the first time,
which is in twenty eighteen, and you still can't believe
that the league that's been around, as long as the
NFL has been around, that two teams have never scored
where each team has scored over fifty points, you know

(02:10):
that and had never happened. There was a game that
was seventy to forty, so you know, one hundred and
ten points scored in the game, but never were two
different Each team scored fifty. I think there were two
games that are more and more total compinuly, it's a blowout,
but one team was like nineteen sixty six or something,

(02:32):
which is unbelievablecause the used to run the football all
the time. That's the shocking part that that would be
in that era, right because because last night the offenses
were scoring so quickly it was ridiculous. I mean it
was like and I loved it. I enjoyed it. Both
quarterbacks through for over four hundred yards. The receivers were

(02:55):
wide open. I couldn't believe how open the receivers were,
and it was it was great to watch two of
the best young qbs in the league. Thoughly innovative offensive coordinators.
You had great running backs, although they you know, the
running backs weren't a huge part of the action last night,

(03:15):
at least not running the ball. But the one thing
I'd have to say about it, though, Rob, as much
as I enjoyed it, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, you
were I was on the edge of my seat. If
there are four or five, maybe six NFL teams that
score this much and that play. You know, are getting

(03:36):
in the forties sometimes in the fifties in games. I
think that's fine. But if this were to become the
norm and defenses weren't any good whatsoever, I think that
would be a problem. I guess what I'm saying. I
don't want to see the NFL become the big twelve

(03:57):
like or arena football outside where you know, where there's
just NonStop scoring and there is no defense because no
one's talking about you want to see a six to
three game. I get that, right, But but my god,
there are defensive players who can make plays and it's
all so exciting. Yea, on the defensive end, you make

(04:17):
a play, you make a big sack or hit, or
you draw the ball loose or whatever it is. You know,
you saw some of that last night. But it was
so the offense was so overwhelmingly dominant that even though
you know, three defensive touchdowns, but but they got lost
in them, sauce lost in the mix. Right. But it's
like we talked about earlier on this this start of

(04:39):
the NBA season, we're all the easy layups at the basket.
Remember we talked about that, and we're like, that's not
what we want to see. I mean, I get it.
Every game was one hundred and forty one hundred thirty eight,
you know, or something like that. It had gone to
the point where it just was way, way too easy.
Great offense, whether it's in football or basketball, we could

(05:03):
even say baseball, it's only great when there's some resistance.
A bomb or a fly pattern, whatever you call it. A
A long touchdown is great when there's defensive resistance. It's
not as good when the guy's wide open. Like Tyreek
Hills touchdown late late in the game last night. He

(05:25):
was wide open. The defenders slipped. Great play because it
made the game closer. I don't know if it remember
if it's tied it or not. But he was wide open.
That's not as exciting if the defender had been there
and he had had to go up and out duel
him for the ball and caught it. A very little
to that. When a dude goes to the hole and

(05:48):
dunks on somebody in traffic, that's a lot more thrilling
than if he has an easy path to the basket.
The defenders aren't really they part like the red sea
and he just does the win meal dunk one handed.
Very nice biblical. Yeah, I like that. Well, I know
you're a biblical guy. You know I am right. But
the other thing is Shannon said something and and you

(06:12):
mentioned the young quarterbacks. But Shannon today on this show
was show was talking about this. Can you see this
that Jeff Fisher had us believing that Jared Goff was
a boss? Yes, because if you watch Jared Golf that
year under Jeff Fisher, and you know he's always had
like a suspect offense on whatever was going on. He's
the king of mediocrity. You thought, like I thought, Jared

(06:33):
Golf was a boss. I look like it. He he
could not play, and now this guy's lightening it up
and you're looking at him looking like a future Hall
of Famer right now. I mean, I know it's a
long way to go the way he's playing. And he's
in the MVP conversation, no question, I mean there it is.
No look, I don't want to We're not gonna go

(06:54):
here again. But that's why I was saying, uh, CONDI
Rice is don't you go? But why are you doing that?
Because I'm just saying you need are dods. It's not easy.
He was still he was, but he was qualified because
he had experience. He still was as a bad coach.
But my point is it's not easy. This is a

(07:16):
guy that is I just threw it out there. Let's
not go there. Let's not go there because everybody agree yesterday.
Everybody agrees with me when you left here yesterday, that's
the only one that don't agree with me. And Alex,
you mean the whole show, the whole show. I'm not
even gonna look. You know. I'm not one that believes

(07:36):
you had to play sports to cover okay, but I
think between the three of y'all, I don't know that
there's a down of organized football between the Look at
this here you go, Look at rob g you played
in junior high in high school? Did you play in
high school? Roger? We can't hear, we can't hear. The
mic won't even let you lie. The mic won't even

(07:58):
last All league high school on a two and eight squad. Chris,
you know what position outside linebacker? Two and eight? You
see your coach wasn't any good? Do you think anybody
can do it? So we had a rack up stats.
That's all. No, I'll give you craid, I give you
props all the Alex Alex played too. I played wide
receiver for a little bit. What was your last year playing? Oh,

(08:20):
last year of junior high? Didn't playing high school. I
didn't the full time. He's a vegan, I figured, actually
Tom Brady, right, Tom Brady and vegans vegan, But he's close.
But he wasn't a vegan at eleven years ago, eight
years old, I was. He was eating pork vegan tendencies
already at eight, Alex, you're eating pork rins that man. Remember,

(08:43):
we ate pork rids, and I love pork grins. I
love hot sauce on them. Yeah, pork grimes. Man, we
ate all types of Back then, we see sardines. You
ever you see sardin but my mind she would try
to give him to us. But now they were button
the supermarket. You would go get a can of sardines.
I didn't, Yeah, I couldn't. But yeah, the little wieners.

(09:03):
I would remember, the little what were they called the
little cocktail weirds or something. And I used to come
ome for school every day and have a little bowl
of pudding. Is that my mom would give us me
and sit my brother and I down at the table,
turn the TV on, and then you'd yeah, or the
we used to have the fry bologny. Yes is good.

(09:26):
You call it ghetto if you want, but it's good.
How about the syrups? I never had a syrups when
you just have white bread and you had yes, yes,
all right, ghetto ghetto? We wait, Hey, we had serrup,
but we lived in our own home. We had our
own house project. There you go. We didn't eat serrup sandwiches.

(09:48):
On that note, I know other people did. Eight seven
seven ninety nine on Fox eight seven seven nine nine
six sixty three sixty nine. Give us a call. I
don't even want to throw it out like this. Did
you like what you saw that? Because something like what
we saw there was some people thought it was just
a little bit much. Really, did you you sound like

(10:08):
a little bit? I like, Don't get me wrong, I
love scoring and all that, but I would like to
have seen a player two some more defense. Be sure
to catch live editions of The Odd Couple with Chris
Brussard and Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app,
and we bring in our weekly guest. He's a Super

(10:32):
Bowl champion he's on Fox Sports NFL analyst. He is
our buddy. We we get with him every once in
a while on Undisputed. He takes the punches that we
throw the Haymakers. His name is Greg Jennings. Greg, Welcome
to the Eye Couples and my two guys, my father.

(10:53):
What's up? Hey? You know Greg saw the video of
us singing Bismar Keys. Uh what you think of that? Greg? Man?
I thought it was hilarious. It was better than the
Golden Girls. I thought, oh, whatever, the Golden Girls. I
prefer the Golden Girls. Thank you. Don't don't be hating

(11:14):
the Golden Girls, my guy, I remember bis. Oh yeah,
I figured I figured Greg would like that. That's why
I said it to him in case he didn't see
it on social media. But uh, all right, Greg, last
night your wide receiver. He loved it. I'm sure you
loved it. But what do you think? I mean? There
was no I don't want to say no defense. They

(11:34):
scored three touchdowns. But I just tell us what you
thought the last night's game. Did you love it? Were
you a little bit? Uh? You want to see a
little more defense? Or what? I loved every bit of
last night? Wow? I loved every bit of last night's
game because here, here's here's why I'm I'm kind of
I'm disappointed in both of you right now because I'm

(11:57):
here because I'm hearing. Oh there was no defense, but
then you had stripped sacks by both teams a couple
by one. You had interceptions, you had d yes, Like,
how was that those defense? It was just a ton
of scoring. It was I think the best analogy that
I've heard. It was a true heavyweight bout, and it was.

(12:18):
It was very reminiscent even though it wasn't as clean
but of last year's Super Bowl. It was back and
forth with the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots.
It was big yards, a lot of points, a lot
of touchdowns being scored, and we saw the best that
both teams had to offer on both sides of the

(12:41):
football in all phases. You can't ask for better games
than what we got last night. But come on, Greg, now,
do you mean in the history of the NFL has
been around almost a hundred years, there's never been a
game until last night where two teams each scored over
fifty points in an FL game. So that's that's an

(13:01):
aberration of what's going on in the rule changes, and people,
this isn't real football what we saw last night. This
is a read a football league outside. See this is okay.
So might come back to that my rebuttals that would
be with everything that all the rule changes that we've
had in the league over the last three years or so,

(13:23):
specifically this last couple of these last couple of years, right,
it's they've been very high favoring the offense. But when
it came to that game last night, you saw defenses
stepping up and making stops, but you saw offenses overcoming
what the defense was able to do at the same time.

(13:45):
And so for me, you got the best of both worlds.
It was a matter of who was gonna have the
ball in their hands last, who was going to be
able to put the ball in the end zone versus
kicking a field goal. And then when I look at
the game last night, I see two quarterbacks, young quarterbacks,
the future of our our National Football League, going head

(14:07):
to head in different conferences, with two coaches that are
on two different ends of the coaching pendome. And I
just thought everything that you could have asked for in
the football game, we saw it last night and we
can't be we can't have a you can't walk away
with a bad taste in your mouth because of the
rules changes. That I mean, these teams played within the rules.

(14:33):
They defensive showed up. They it was clean, Like, I
just don't see how you could have not Did you
turn your head away? Now? We both said we enjoyed it.
We just don't want to see this every week, right not?
But Greg, real quick on on the young quarterbacks. Did
did Mahomes lose the MVP last night with five turnovers? No?

(14:54):
I don't think he did. Why doesn't that hurt him?
Five turnovers in the game? And this here's why I
don't think he lost it because we get lost in
the five turnovers because of what he was able to
do as far as overcoming those turnovers. That and I
think when when you're talking about an MVP, it's the

(15:15):
most valuable player. It's not it's not something about it's
not an award to where we try to compare and
contrast how many mistakes one guy made versus the other.
It's how valuable you are to your team. And as
great as Drew Brees is playing, and I would love
to see Drew Brees win it. It's not as exciting

(15:37):
as Patrick Mahomes, and I think that play is a
part and he can't be penalized because he's willing to
make a little bit more of an arrant throw, or
he's willing to be a little more flashy with it,
or he just has a higher skill set as far
as talent. And this is no knocking Drew Brees. He
has a bigger arm, he's a lot more mobile. There's

(16:00):
a lot of things that you would be more willing
to sit and watch than Drew Brees. And when you're
looking at a Patrick mahone and I absolutely love Drew Brees,
one of my favorite quarterbacks of all time. It's the
eye couple. Chris Brussar Rob Parker were joined by Super
Bowl champion Greg Jenny's Greg, I did see so many
players last night where I felt like the receiver was

(16:22):
just wide open. I'm not just talking about the Tyreek
Hill long touchdown where the defenders slipped terrible, but I
thought guys for the most part were wide open. Why
did you feel that way and why do you think?
Why were the receivers able to get so wide open
last night? When we knew what was coming. I did

(16:43):
feel that way, and I think you alluded to it
when you were saying I'm not even talking about the
Tyreek Hill long turchdown when Sam Shield slipped. I think
the fields conditions, if you paid attention to the field
conditions last night, it was slick out there for whatever reason.
There were a lot of guys tripping, slipping and getting
tripped up on the turf to where guys were being

(17:03):
turned loose. They were stumbling, they were missing tackles. It
was it was one of those moments where you felt like, offensively,
if I can just get him on his toes and
have him kind of on scape, I can create a
lot more separation then I'm able to create in any
other game because of the conditions. And I think both

(17:24):
teams benefited from it offensively, specifically more so than the
defensive guys because you just know where you're trying to
go versus trying to react to someone where they're going.
But I think that's why we saw so many guys
being turned loose. It was on the Rams side. It
was a lot of blown coverages, a lot of miscommunication.

(17:47):
You saw a lot of late communication, and it was
just a great job offensively from both coordinators, both coaches
and staffs of putting those defenders in tough positions as
far as trying to get them to communicate. Late Craig, what, Uh,
let's turn into your old stomping grounds, Green Bay And

(18:08):
there's just so much buzzing out of there that this
is gonna be it for Mike McCarthy thirteen years. Uh.
The team is just struggling, having won a road game
this year, and I don't know, it seems like to
be a disconnect. Do you believe that this that could happen?
This could be Mike McCarthy's last year, and the rumors
that he might wind up going to Cleveland to coach
Baker Mayfield. I'm just I like how you said that,

(18:35):
are there are there rumors out there that that's where
you want to go? Out there saying as we say
that that that that that could be the fit, is
that he's going to Cleveland the coach Baker Mayfield, considering
he had uh, right, Brett Farr and then Aaron Rodgers
and now Baker Mayfield. Look, when I when I think
of Mike McCarthy, I think of the Green Bay Packers,

(18:57):
And when I see what he has not been able
to do. I don't solely put it on Mike McCarthy.
That's where I struggle with this, because a lot of
it is falling into the hands and onto the shoulders
of Mike McCarthy, when in reality it has been more
than just Mike. If Mike were in charge of personnel,

(19:19):
be sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple
with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern,
four pm Pacific. But I do think Mahomes suffered last night.
I got the six touchdowns, and people will still random Raven,
what does he have now on the year? Ten interceptions
and what do you have? Thirty seven touchdown? Thirty seven

(19:40):
thirty seven touchdown, ten interception, But he had five turnovers? Rob,
were you able to find anything on that or no? No,
we were trying to figure out if any MVP ever
had five turnovers in a game. I can't say problem.
I don't know. I mean, Hayton Manning threw a ton
of interceptions, but I don't know if he is a
lot and again in a single game, two of them
were fumbles. The last interception was almost a hail married.

(20:06):
I get it, but it's still a third in a game.
You're not gonna give it. You're just gonna keep pounding him. No,
because if you do, if you threw a game when
a touchdown, you wouldn't be talking about while the last
one didn't count because it was just a hail married. Okay,
I think that no, I would count it. I think
we both would agree at this point. Wouldn't we both

(20:26):
agree that Drew Brees is the MVP. He's the leader
out of the clubhouse. If you had to vote right now,
it would be Drew Brees, I think. Okay. Second would
be who mahomes Girly Golf? Donald? I mean Rob g

(20:48):
just said Luck big Ben. I don't know if he
was joking or no. No, Luck is having not not
if MVP, No, but luckers have I know, I know,
but are you serious? Get get on the air, Rogie better.
We're not going seven deep. I'm not saying. I would
probably say Khalil Mack Aaron Donald Khalili that defense is

(21:11):
hot though. Yeah, but I don't know if before I
said uh, Andrew Luck and I know Luck is playing
really well, but no, he's really you know what, what
is his numbers, Rob, you got him. He's playing well.
They don't have help but the but they but they really,
I mean Andrew Luck two thousand and seven hundred and

(21:32):
sixty nine yards passing, twenty nine t s nine inter Wow. Yeah,
he's bounced back because he looked awful the start. We're
not gonna bring Andrew Luck in the conversation that started
with Patrick Mahomes has no chance to win the MVP.
Now there's no way because if Patrick Mahomes doesn't have
a chance, then you, Dar, I'm sure better believe that
Andrew Luck doesn't. Rob Gi. What's the top five MVP

(21:54):
candidates in Vegas? I'm interest number one right now still
Pat Mahomes rally really number two, Drew Brees and I
think that's for Aaron Rodgers. Number five Alvin Comala tie
with Philip Rivers album. I'm not even looking at defensive,
which understandable. But Max been and the reason Aaron Rodgers
is in the top five, He's got nineteen nineteen touchdowns

(22:19):
in one pick. He should say the number he shouldn't be.
Should he be in the top five? Rob Yes, nineteen
and one pick all years. Oh, you really want to
talk NFL stats for the quarterbacks. Really, I'm just talking
about nineteen touchdowns and pairs. No way, he's a top
five MVP candidate. His team is four or five and one,

(22:39):
and look I picked him to win the Super Bowl.
But no, there's no way Roethlisburger should be ahead of him.
Wins counts, especially for quarterbacks. When you look at in analytics,
wins don't count. You you hate analytics, you know that,
you know. Can you admit Aaron Rodgers should not be
in the top five? No, I understand why he's the

(23:00):
top five. You don't think nineteen touchdowns in one pick
is impressive. No, it is impressive, but it's not He's
not like I said, Drew Brees, he's got more. I
would have Golf ahead of him. I would have Girly probably. Well,
how come Golf is in there? He's not in the
top five
