(00:21):
s R. You're listening to the Best of the Odd
Couple with Chris Brush and Rob Harker Zion. Everybody is
hyped up on this kid. I think the comparisons to
Lebron James are way, way, way too far because he
(00:42):
just doesn't sow the skill set that Lebron has. And
I like him. I think he's gonna be a star.
But I want to throw it out to you, is
the hype too much? Like? Do you think he's going
to live up? And he doesn't have to become Lebron
to live up to it. I don't think the hype
that much, but he has to become a superstar to
(01:04):
live up to the hype. Do you think he will?
I'm gonna be honest, I'm not sure, and I'm that's
an honest answer because I like his game. I like
what we saw, you know when he gets in the
mix with all these other NBA players, you know, Yeah,
he's with such a bigger guy than most of the
(01:27):
guys in college, and who he played against, I don't
really know was there any real rival. I don't know
if he really had a rival or anybody who could,
you know, go up against him. So there'll be some
of those guys in the NBA he'll have to deal with.
So I'm not sure. I'm not sure, to be honest,
I'm really he's one of those guys that I saw
him in college. He wrecked the place, he did what
(01:48):
he was supposed to do. But I'm not positive he's
going to be this star that everybody thinks he is. Yeah,
I do think he'll be a superstar. I think he's
a new age Charles bark period, a new age Charles Barkley,
and we all know how it turned out for Charles Barkley,
all time great player. I think one of the things
(02:09):
that has some people doubtful is that today we are
so used to the best players dominating the basketball like
it's always in their hands and they make all the
plays and you can just see their skills set because
they always have the ball. Zion is different at least
he was in college. Now. I don't know if eventually,
(02:32):
you know, years from now, he develops into a ball
dominant player. But he's all in some ways a throwback
to right like you used. I mean, Michael Jordan played
off the ball. You know, if you weren't a point guard,
you played off the ball. And even the point guards
didn't dominate the ball like they do today. So I
think that's thrown some people off. But I love him.
(02:54):
I saw the intangibles. He's got a great work ethic.
From everything I've read and heard, you could see his
joy for the game. The fact that he is such
a tenacious defender at this age is big. Even Lebron
wasn't a tenacious defender at this age and early in
his NBA career. He yeah, you he does it. He
(03:18):
does all the little things in addition to the great
physical tools. So I think the kid is the truth.
But he's got things to work on, you know, He's
got to work on his jump shot, as we all know.
But I think today, with the floor spread the way
it is, he'll be able to get to the basket
at a good first step, handles it well enough to
(03:39):
go off the dribble and he'll be able to get
into paint and Rob, you and I've talked about it before.
It's easier than ever to get into the paint. And
there aren't any there's what one Patrick Ewing, there's one
shock one David Robinson, one of lines a morning. That's
Joel Embii. Other than him, who's scaring you at the
rim Today's NBA. You know, so I think he can
(04:03):
finish over most everybody. So uh, I think you'll be
a great one, but real quick. And it's the question
we're gonna throw out to the listeners, rob where if
you have your druthers, where would he end up? Who
gets the number one pick tonight? Because that druthers on
my shoulders, that Dan druff. I'm just trying to figure
it out. Not even a response from Kauhi, even Kauai kauwhiss,
(04:29):
jovial as ever, as happy as ever because he made
that big shot so like he's like he's all love
and joy now and even he still didn't think that
was funny and not that late. When that that's too late.
It don't laughs too, it's too late. Kauhi laughs immediately,
trust me. If it's funny, tell you where I want
(04:50):
him to go. I want him to go to New York.
I want him to go to New York. And my
second choice would be Atlanta because I think he and
trade would be something special. My choices for him to
go to New Orleans. Really, that's why I want him
just to throw you, just because, just to throw a
monkey wrench in the whole NBA. Because think about it.
(05:12):
Does Anthony David say, hey, maybe I'll stay or do
you you just want to I think no, no, no,
it would be a trade. It would be a trade.
Oh no, But I mean, like, no, what I'm telling you, Okay,
I think that would be good for the NBA, so
that he would be in New Orleans. Yes, so he
will sell seats, he he sells tickets. He's gonna sell
(05:33):
tickets New Orleans. I get it. But New Orleans they
have people who are fans, and they have a great
people from New Orleans, Louisiana. I know that. But I'm
just saying I would like to see him wind up there.
So you wow, I know I'm a little different, but
that's what I'm That's a shocker. All right. Let's hear
what everybody else from Louisiana even I don't want to
see him go to New Orleans because he's not gonna
(05:56):
sell like the money thing is. And then I'm not saying,
but they became I'm relevant now, granted they don't sell
ticket or they're gonna be relevant anyway because they're gonna
get k D and Kyrie, right, and the Knicks don't
need him to sell tickets. Do you notice, Chris, No,
but they need him to be relevant. No, But I'm saying,
you know or somebody you know, well, if they get
those other two guys, I'm just saying, they don't need
(06:17):
him to sell tickets at Madison Squat during any empty seats. No, no, no,
they sell tickets no matter what. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Brussar then
Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio AB last
summer Rob. In the off season, Kevin Durant was on
(06:40):
a podcast with CJ mccollin with CJ McCollum's podcast, Remember that, Yeah, CJ.
You know he's an aspiring journalist. He does journalistic work
in the off season. If they lose this series. You'll
probably hear him on some you know, some shows talking
about the NBA Finals in that capacity. But he had
(07:01):
k d on his podcast, and kd uh really kind
of mocked the Blazer's chances of winning the championship. Here's
the exchange. I think I was more mad. Why are
you mad about this stuff? Bro? I'm in the league.
What do you mean why am I mad about it?
I mean in the Western Conference. I gotta play you
(07:22):
in EF first all the time. Anyway, as it is
over and over again, we didn't got eliminated by y'all
a few times in the first round, so I'm gonna
I mean, you know you're you know you guys aren't
going win a championship. Bro. We had the team, we
had capability anything. It's possible. We can't win a championship.
I mean, let's be honest, bro, we can't win a
championship anything. I need more. I mean, I like y'all,
(07:44):
I like the too, I like y'all. To you you're
a harder stop. But I mean, come on, no way
is happening. Y'all ain't gonna be no It's gotta have
a night Jing and Yang, Bro, there's gonna be too
much of one thing with y'all. So he stopped that.
So what do you suggest? I suggest you just just
keep playing, man and don't worry about what goes on
at the top of things. Right, they're the type of
(08:05):
things last year was right there. We was just slightly
below one and two. How'd you play unfortunate situations happened
in the first round? How did you play my unfortunate
circumstances like a seed? Wow? Wow? Those that don't understand
what they started off talking about. It was when DeMarcus Cousins,
(08:27):
one of the best big men in the world, decided
to go to Golden State last offseason as a free agent.
And CJ was like, yo, I was mad, Right, you
already got Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Claytimes, and Draymond Green,
and now you're getting DeMarcus Cousins, because basically, it gave
you five all stars and you're starting line. Right. It
did that. That's arguably the greatest starting five talent wise
(08:51):
in the history of basketball. And here's the thing, Rob,
And it sounded like they were two friends talking and
I would say this to Kevin Dury, I like Kevin
Dury as a person like I know KD. I like him.
We've had exchanges in person, and you know on social media,
(09:13):
you know, texting and all that stuff. You know DM,
and he'll go at you and confront you when you
say something he doesn't like. And I would say to
k D, dude, you're doing the same thing. You're critiquing
the Portland Traveler. You were critiquing them like y'all ain't
got a chance. You're not good enough, so stop thinking
(09:35):
about the championship and accept your lowly lot in life,
which is middle of the role Western Conference playoff team, right,
So don't come at us k D when we offer
the same critiques, whether it's of you or other players.
So I would get that out of the way, But
I rob, I'm just gonna say this. I did not
(09:57):
kill and I know you were different. I want to
hear your take. I never killed Kevin Durant when he
went to Golden State because the reason I didn't was
because I knew that in a year or two, when
the Golden State Warriors won the championship, which obviously they
were gonna do, and when Kevin Durant played tremendous basketball,
(10:20):
which obviously he was going to do. Everybody would be
praising him. He would be, you know, maybe called the
best player in the world. I'm saying this a few
years ago. I was saying this. He would be getting
Nobody would remember for the most part, nobody'd be talking about, oh,
how he went to this seventy three win team. They
would just be talking about how great he was once
(10:42):
he started racking up rings. And the reason I said
it was because the same exact thing happened to Lebron
James when Lebron went to Miami. He got crushed even
worse than KD. But once he started winning his two
championships in Miami, all of that was thrown out of
the window, and everybody who had killed him, Barkley, Charles Barkley,
(11:04):
everybody else, was now of a sudden praising him. I
told Stephen A. Smith that on Sports Center when he
and I went at it after Durant signed. I said, look,
in two years, y'all gonna be praising this dude. That's
why I'm not killing him, because I know I'm not
gonna be, you know, changing changing my tune like that,
and so. But the thing I would say to k D.
(11:25):
And I'm wrapping it up. K D doesn't need to
be talking trash. As great as he is, and as
I've said, he's arguably the best player in the world.
But as great as he is, and he did not
just collectory even though it's possible they would have won
him without it. He was. He's their best player, hands down,
(11:48):
and he was the finals MVP twice and deserved it.
So he carried him. You know, they might not have
needed carrying, but he was the best player in those
fun right, you know. Yeah, he didn't just ride their
coat tails twice. That's what I always said. You could
say whatever you want. You gotta give him credit that
he was the driving force and he led me so.
(12:10):
But but what I say to KD is he should
not be talking trash because it's too easy to go
back at him like don't like like when with class. Yeah,
but the only problem is that that's a part of
who he is. But you you get I know what
you're saying. It's just easy and c J handled it
(12:33):
well and as friends, I think that's how it should
have handled. I know what you're saying, right, he could
have easy come at Kadie like yo, dude, right, you,
I could have went to Golden State instead of you.
It had two rings, just like you got right. But
but I but I understand you're one percent right. But
it's just not the way that KD does stuff, you
know what I mean, and the way he responds and acts.
(12:55):
So I'm not totally surprised. But your point is well
taken because there's easily pushed back against him for what
he did and how he went about his business. Yeah,
I just think, and it doesn't bother me, but I
just think for his sake, like it would be easy
for him to get his feelings hurt, and we know
(13:16):
he's sensitive to begin with, but it would be just
easy for somebody to really go roll going him, yeah,
like you, kind of like Draymond did. And I don't
think that was the right thing for Draymond to do
earlier in the year, but you could easily go roll
if k D starts jumping bad about my rings and
(13:37):
when I'm a champion and you know, we know you're
a champion and we're gonna give you your love because
you are great and you have one, but don't throw
it in people's faces. Other players, especially because it's so
easy for them to just go off on you and
hurt your feelings. You see what I'm saying. It wouldn't
even take much and it's evident to everybody. So I
(14:01):
would just say to KD, you don't need to be
talking trash, win with class and you know, be humble
about it. Everybody sees your greatness and they're gonna give
you praise, but you don't need to throw it in
somebody's face. No, and uh, you know here we are
unlikely match up, right, No, kdo It's it's it's it's
(14:22):
funny how those things from that podcast, Chris? Would you
fast forward? Am I right? Like? Who would have thought
that at that time? That would mean anything? Right? It
makes you and and I don't know, like I don't
believe in this, and I think Golden State's gonna win
pretty handily. But when when something like that happens, there's
(14:44):
a part of you that says, man, is this gonna
come back to hunt Golden State? You know what I mean? Like,
like it just would be the perfect ending for with
that what played out in that podcast, for Portland to
be golden It would be it would be one of
one of those moments where you go back and you go,
(15:06):
did that really happen? Like like that? Like if it
was a movie, you think there's no way, Like it
would be a Hollywood ending, like to start something a
conversation that people take for granted. Nobody was thinking about Portland,
Uh what a chance of going to the NBA finals.
But here they are, and uh, Golden States without their
best player. So when you start looking at those things,
(15:29):
you know, and you say that Golden States should roll,
you just don't know. What if? What if Steph Curry
has him and he had a great game? What was that? Six? Six? Yeah? Great,
he's been great and I'm not saying it, but but
what if related to Dury not being here? But what
if he has if? What if the shot is off?
You know what I'm saying, like a game or two?
(15:50):
I don't know. And they so how much of a
chance do you give? I think, like really importcause look,
I think rob is very possible. We don't see Kevin
Durant in this series. I think that's very possible. If
he doesn't play, I'm gonna say Golden State in six.
If he plays Golden State in five, well, even if
(16:11):
he plays, I mean, we know he's gonna miss the
first two games. That right, But I'm just saying that
that would be if he doesn't play at all Golden
State in six. So you don't, you you don't, even
without Kde, you just don't give Portland much of a chance. No,
I'm right, No, No, I don't think they're gonna win. Yeah,
but I'm just saying, but doesn't mean that they can't
win some games at home or win a game. No,
(16:32):
they could, They could go, they could, definitely, that's what
I'm saying. I could see that, but I can't see. Um.
I can't see them winning. And if they did, that
would be some story, well one of the great things.
And you alluded to it in our interview with Stu
Jackson last hour. Lebron not being in the playoffs has
(16:53):
allowed a lot of other guys to shine. And granted
those games was still going even if Lebron was playing.
And you know, but he's such a big superstar that
he he consumes everything, no doubt, you know, it's all
about him. And now in his absence, a janis obviously Kawhi,
Leonard Nicola Yoki, but even a Damian Lillard, but also
(17:18):
a CJ. McCollum. Now they are able to step into
the spotlight and people around the country now have to
take notice of them, which I think will help if
Lebron comes back next year, plays great and the Lakers
make the playoffs, because now you have all these other
names to worry about, to follow and know that they're
great players. But CJ. McCollum man, it's been really good
(17:41):
to see him get some love because he's never made
an All Star team, even though he's an All Star
caliber point guard or guard. It's just so many guards
in the West. If he was in the East, he'd
have been a multiple All Guard, you know, no question
about it. Yeah, no, and I agree, And the wadings
have been good, and that's good for the NBA. It's
not that the Lebron's not gonna get back in the
(18:02):
playoffs or anything like that. But I just thought that
I was the one I was saying, and we could
pull up to take the old reheated take Chris, but
I said, I thought the ratings would be good even
without Lebron. James. It's just a lot different storylines and
sometimes you get tired of the same old, same well
(18:22):
because you remember, Lebron won eight years in a row.
And then you have the Golden State right trying to
go five years in a row. So when you try
to put those two together, it did kind of seem
like being there, done that, And now this year was
wide open. Nobody knew for sure that Philadelphia wasn't gonna
win that game seven? Right, Oh no, too tremendous game seven,
(18:44):
that's what I mean. And the same thing. And who
knows if Denver knocks down three three pointers out of
those seventeen in a row they missed, they're probably playing
Golden State, right, no, no question. And we're gonna have
to get that that microwave take by you because I
really don't Rob Ge get to get on the mic.
We'll get on that, gee. Did I will have it
(19:05):
ready for tomorrow. Have you heard it? Did you? Have
you heard it? You heard it? Love? I heard it live? Yeah,
it's false. Bill O'Riley even heard it. Lot he remembers
what I said it. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker
weekdays at seven pm Eastern, four pm Pacific. It was
(19:29):
absolute pandemonium. As far as draft lottery man, I was Chicago,
my goodness, let me run down the top four. We
don't give you every pick but the top four. And uh, then, Rob,
I know you you you can share your take, and
then I'll share some of my thoughts. At number four,
the Los Angeles Lakers. Now what was their slot, Rob g?
(19:53):
Where were they seven? Eleven? So they moved all away
from eleven to number four? So good for the Lakers.
They get the fourth pick in the draft, Number three,
the team that had you know, their whole fan base
was just dying to get the number one pick. They
finally thought this was their year, the New York Knicks
(20:14):
instead getting number three. No Zion, that's for sure. And
then at number two you got the Memphis Grizzlies. Again,
let's throw out the conspiracy theories because Memphis being this
high would not be the choice of the NBA. And
then number one, for marketing reasons, Number one, the New
Orleans Pelicans with the first pick, and look, this is
(20:36):
a year. Obviously the big story. Their season was ruined
when Anthony Davis requested the trade at the trade deadline.
And now, you know, does this change his thoughts about
staying or going? You know, now, the Knicks, we thought
if they got number one, they could trade Zion for
(20:57):
a D. Or whoever got number one could trading for
a D. Obviously that's not an issue now. So those
are the top four, rob what are your thoughts? Initially
just shocking, to be honest, I just it wasn't a
scenario I thought about it. Really, I never thought about
New Orleans getting the first pick. Chris, did you like
(21:18):
not for not for a second. So I was shocked
when you said, and I'm gonna give you props to
some degree. Uh, you said you saw Zion. You know
you wanted Zion to wind up, but you thought it
would be via trade. And I know what you like that.
I know you didn't like it, but I would say, dude,
I don't want to see And I'm from Louisiana. My
(21:39):
prayers met in New Orleans. But I'm saying it from
the standpoint a franchise that's about to lose a D
right now. He said he wasn't re signing there, so
you get they need a player. He didn't need a
big time player to attract people and sell tickets. That's
why I thought him going there, and that if the
Knicks would have gotten that pick, they probably would have
(22:00):
made a deal. But Chris, I still believe that that
Knicks plan is not gone. From this standpoint, why can't
they now trade the third pick right to New Orleans
and New Orleans could have the first and third pick,
get rid of a D who doesn't want to be
then it wants to be resigned. He still, Okay, go ahead,
you see what I'm saying. And so then the Knicks
(22:23):
could still get a D and then still get Kywe
and KD as free agents. So if I'm the Knicks,
I'm trying to trade that pick. And if you're New Orleans,
if you know this guy is not serious about staying there,
I'm not letting a D walk. And I could get
two young players, star players, two of the top three
players who are looking looking to rebuild, and we're gonna have,
(22:47):
you know, have them for a number of years. It
makes sense to me if I'm the Knicks, that's where
I would go. What do you think about, Well, I
think you're making a lot of sense. And here's why.
Number One, trust me, America, you're listening. Trust me. This
changes nothing for Anthony Davis. He still wants out, all right,
(23:08):
He still wants out. So that's Number one, Number two
New York and La as In Lakers are two teams.
Those are the only teams we definitely know, and that
I definitely know from talking to people around this situation
that Anthony Davis would tell the teams I'll stay long term.
(23:29):
If Boston tries to trade for him, they are going
to be told he's not signed in long term. There
you go. So if you want to waste, you want
to give away Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown and some
draft picks for a one year rental, so be it,
but he ain't staying. Chicago be told the same thing.
(23:51):
Those teams outside of New York Knicks and Los Angeles
Lakers will be told that. So Rob to your point,
that gives the Nicks some leverage. It does. And here's
the thing I would I was thinking while you were talking. Initially,
I was like, you know what, if I'm Memphis, I
(24:11):
got the second pick, I'm trying to trade the second pick,
which is gonna be John Morant for Anthony Davis. And
I'm saying the New Orleans you can team John Morant
and a d or I'm sorry. In Zion, however, Anthony
Davis not gonna stay in Memphis, So that doesn't The
(24:33):
Grizzlies would be crazy to do that. And you think
I want Zion with job, but hold up, who did
he played with last year at Duke? R J Berry yes,
or even Cam Reddish. Some people think he might be
a better prospect. But the point is you could actually
r J Barry and Zion Williams and were roommates, no
(24:54):
great friends, right, You could put them together and they
can do their own thing. You know, the only got
a team, you know what I mean? We were in
college together and now here we are in the NBA.
They can kind of own it and you get rid
of a d who doesn't want to be there. I
don't think the Knicks are out of it. I really don't.
(25:15):
I think because of the some of the things I
just mentioned the circumstances, I agree with you. Usually you
would think the number three picks not getting him, but
he still don't want to be there. You're one of
the few teams that he would sign with long term,
and in the draft pick you're gonna give up could
(25:35):
be one of his best friends, you know. So this
is the only the only potential uh monkey wrench in
that plan is if Zion and RJ really aren't that close,
you know what I mean kind of they just do
it for the cameras. But I gotta admit I don't
(25:57):
see that from you know. They were just on the
ESPNB in or the view together again tonight, So I
think it's real. And if it's real, then you're you
could be right, rob it. It could be a good
situation for the New York Knicks, yea, and for New
Orleans because you get two young guys. Uh, you know nothing.
(26:17):
Too many teams get the first and third pick of
a hey draft. Oh my god, I think about that. Look,
and here's the thing. Going into last year's college season,
r J. Barrett was viewed as the number one player
in the country exactly coming in absolutely, so you know
this is they have a chance and uh yeah, you're right,
(26:39):
that's that's interested. What about the Lakers now they shoot
up at two number four, which is a big break
for them, right, but kind of in my view, the
last thing they need you get you're the Lebron James.
You're right, you know, the last thing you knew not
trying to develop your body, right, and you fall jes
(27:00):
out like this was viewed as three top guys Zion,
John Moran and RJ. I'm glad you said the rest.
I said that because when Rob G came into the
studio and he said, well, but the Lakers got the
fourth pick, I said, name the fourth pick. It couldn't
give me a right And I said, that's exactly I said.
(27:21):
We've been talking about the same three guys forever. I
can't tell you who would be the fourth pick. I can't.
I saw ESPN on the mock draft they threw up.
You may have seen it. They had the point guard
from Vanderbilt. You know, I don't see that unless you're gonna.
I don't see that. You got Linzo ball, you got
Lebron James handling the ball. You know, um Cam Reddish,
(27:44):
some people like him. The point is this, You're gonna
probably bring in another, you know, good young talent, but
that's not what you need right now. So to me,
it becomes more trade bait, more trade bait to try
to get veteran, good veteran around Lebron James, no doubt
about it. Yeah, because it really doesn't fit in for
(28:06):
where the Lakers are. They've had enough. Lebron's going the
other way. Aging Star three years to go. You know
what I mean, you're not trying to develop anybody keep Lebron.
If you're gonna keep Lebron, it's win now. And I'll
say this, and I think that's how they should be
rob because franchises go through stages. There are times when
(28:27):
it's time for a franchise to go young. And you know,
a good season, it's thirty one wins. You know, like
there's a time for that. But there's a time where
you you get sick of that. Like Detroit, I've mentioned
them before. There was a time years ago they say,
you know what we're going on, young, start all over.
(28:47):
You know, it's not about the playoffs. Let's just get
some young talent. And then four or three or four
years from now to right didn't work. And what did
they end up doing? Trading for Blake Griffin because because hey,
being in the play offs as a seventh seed is
better than being in the lottery for the eighth straight year.
That was kind of what they came to Phoenix. You know, now,
let's see if these young guys paying out for them.
(29:10):
But they've been in the draft lottery for several years
as well. La if you trade Lebron for a bunch
of more young players. You're going back to where you
were two years ago, where you got all these young
kids and thirty five wins is viewed as opt them
and a nice season. Is that what you want? No,
(29:31):
the Lakers are already upset because they missed the playoffs
six straight years. They are ready to at least be,
you know, a threat in the playoffs. And so you
keep to me, you keep Lebron and you try to
build around him, and if it means giving up this
fourth pick to do it, then so be it. Now
I'm with you. It'll be interesting to see because it
(29:55):
just wasn't weird. I don't know did the draft? Was
it weird? To YouTube? Just seems so weird. Chris, It's
nothing what I expected. It's just nothing what I expected. Well,
and the Bulls want that happy? Would you? They got five? Yeah? Yeah?
And again see a team like the Bulls or you know, Phoenix,
(30:18):
what all? You don't need another pretty good young player,
you know what I'm saying. You you need a young
star or you know, you don't need another young also
ran you get too many of them and it becomes
a problem. And so I agree with you, I mean right,
(30:39):
you want to becoming the Sons, right, yeah, yeah, or
the Lakers before Lebron. You know, you can get too
many of these guys. And in Detroit had how many
young picks did they have? You know? So Orlando, right,
these teams that are constantly in the library a bunch
of young number six picks, you know. And so yeah,
(31:01):
it's interesting. And the game, the game, one of the
Western Conference Finals has started Portland Trailblazers at the Golden
State Warrior. So we will keep you posted on that.
But the big news thus far the draft lottery and
a lot different than most people expected. And then two
(31:22):
of the three teams robed, the Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers,
who had the best chance along with the Knicks, of
getting the number one pick. They fell all the way
out of the top five. Fox Sports Radio has the
