It's the Best of the Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker! Chris and Rob discuss the unfortunate shooting of Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz and explain why he Big Papi could have been a victim of his own success. The guys also debate whether or not the Golden State Warriors being in a 3-1 hole in the NBA Finals is proof that Steph Curry isn't 'That Guy', and if the return of Kevin Durant will be enough to bring the Warriors back from the brink of elimination against the Toronto Raptors.

(00:22):
You're listening to the Best of the Odd Couple with
Chris Brush and Ron Harker. Big Poppy was in this
home contribute. David Ortiz uh down in the Dominican Republican
he was out and apparently, I mean, according to this
story and this is from this is the Daily Mail,
right and London, uh and it was reported in the

(00:44):
New York Post. It was picked up basically said it
it was a hit that maybe some drug lord was
not happy that Ortiz was having a fair or something
intimate relationship with his girlfriend wife and basically put out
a hit. And David Ortiz was hit at close range

(01:07):
and he was airlifted for the range. He had to
have parts of his intestines and colon and his gall
bladder removed, my goodness, gracious, and he is also suffered
liver damage. He's in which she's gonna be in bad shape,
which is so sad because you want to talk about
a guy who lit up the ballpark and people just

(01:31):
talking about the game. Is love for the game of baseball,
and now here we go. He was very much a
personality and he was someone Obviously he was a great
baseball player, but beyond that, people loved him for more
than that. And he actually was doing great with broadcasting.
I thought, working with us so at FS one and
on the pregame and postgame show during the playoffs, and

(01:56):
he really fit in. He was funny. I mean, he
was doing a great It's really a sad story. Uh,
but you hope he can. I mean, like you said,
all that stuff. He was airlifted to uh to Boston. Yeah,
he's watching it to be alive. Yeah, the Red Sox
sent a plane for him to bring him back to

(02:19):
the United States. I think he's going to Mass General
and they're gonna try to work on him and do
as much as they can. He's a beloved icon of
course in Boston, Big Poppy Well and another guy who
you know was shot in his home area as well.
Gary Sheffield was shot in the Tampa Bay area and
knowing Uh, Miami, wasn't it rob Gm in his home state?

(02:41):
He's from Tampa, from Tampa was shot in Miami. His son,
Jared Gary Sheffield Junior put out a tweet about big
Poppy rob Ge. Why don't you read it for us? Yeah?
He said, quote my dad and David Ortiz were both
shot in their hometowns. It's amazing how you're in me
is always your own all. We've seen these situations. It's

(03:07):
it's particularly hard, uh for athletes. You know, there used
to be a thing, Chris, and you tell me if
I'm wrong. It used to be a thing if you
made it as a pro athlete. Criminals used to would
not bother you. From this standpoint about how hard it
is to get out of these situations and circumstances. Others

(03:28):
a badge of honor. You made it out, you made
something of yourself. You're a ball player. That doesn't apply
anymore because we see you used to hear a lot
of stories and not that they don't ever happen today,
But where when a guy showed promise in the don't
mess me exactly? And you know they used to be.

(03:48):
But athletes are getting robbed at an unbelievable rate. And
know what I mean by from from years ago. You
remember in New York, I don't know how many guys
gotten robbed at clubs coming out, you know, at the watches,
like like people just don't care. Stefan Marberry had a
situation like that. But look, when a lot of these
guys come from impoverished environments and people know how much

(04:13):
money they make, it's publicized all over the place that
you're making you have a one hundred and fifty million
dollar contract or something like that. Then yeah, when people
that don't have that type of money, that are in
a tough situation, not that it's certainly not I'm not
excusing it, no, no, but you can become a target
because they're looking at it like look I want to

(04:35):
get I know how much money he has and I
want to get something right, Or you're walking around with
a thirty thousand dollars watch, or they don't care. Well,
that's where you know, look, guys should not I would
not recommend going into a poor neighborhood, even if you're
from there with gold you know, platinum chains and Rolex

(05:00):
watches all like flossing, showing off. You don't need to
do that. You don't need to throw it in people's faces.
And when that's when you become a target. When Sheffield
was shot, this was back in nineteen ninety five, and
when he was playing for the Marlins, and he was
basically at a at a traffic light, probably in a
nice car whatever, and and and you know what, it

(05:24):
wasn't in Miami. It wasn't Tampa. Okay, So someone's right
in its hometown. And he was shot in the upper shoulder.
And it wasn't attempted at a car jacking, you know,
late at night where somebody was trying to get it.
So again, did they definitely know it was him? I
don't know if they knew it was him, or they
was driving a nice time late at night, you know
what I mean, And they should try and they shot
him and he's lucky to be alive. It didn't you know,

(05:47):
it didn't do a lot of damage to him. But
the David Ort story is just it's it's really heart wrenching,
just that here you are going back to your home,
right where you're from. You should be heralded, you want
all these world series, but great career. I have a
chance at the Hall of fame all the other stuff.

(06:08):
So normally those guys are lifted up and people are
proud of them. Right, you came from my neighborhood of
my area and you made it. You made it in life.
But there are always those others who are like And
now the other story, what do you make of the
other story about the king drug kingpinn and a hit, Well,
I hope look that story. Yeah, I don't. I don't

(06:31):
know what to say about that. Obviously we don't know
where and it wasn't a robbery because you know, it
wasn't like they tried to take something from this. And
I'm not suggesting by what I said earlier that Ortiz
or Gary Sheffield back in the day were flaws now
whatever year, but there are guys that do that, and
our guys who have done that, and I would never

(06:54):
recommend that, you know, because a lot of times guys
complain about what they don't have having, you know, some
people the rich and the system and what the system
is doing and this and that, and then as soon
as they get money, they flaunted in front of people
that don't have it. So I would never recommend that.
And again I'm not saying Ortiz or Sheffield. We're doing that.

(07:16):
And here's the other part. Everybody in that spot knows
that's David Ortiz. He is a mega celebrity. I don't
care where you are, You're at the airport and any
town in America. He's pretty out there, right, you know who?
Big popular? Yeah, So I think that's the other part
is that they do know who he is, and it's
it's a shame. Be sure to catch live editions of

(07:38):
The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker week
days at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app. I think Steph
Curry will have a big game. Oh every day? You
say that all the time. Well, he is only averaging
thirty three points in the series. How are you doing?
Game four, the most important game of the series, twenty

(08:00):
seven points ten in the fourth quarter. Was it was
that good enough? It wasn't good enough? But remember he
feel did you feel? It's a short menu when it
comes to win their losses? Did you He did not win,
So I'll give you that. But Tom Brady did win.
Why you're keeping because Brady? If Steph Curry had twelve

(08:20):
points the equivalent of time Brady throwing for one hundred
and ninety one yards or whatever it was, right, and
they won, you would be killing Steph Curry. Tom Brady
could do that. No, he kid, you would be killing
Steph Curry. You would go against your model of short menu.
My only thing is uh. I think you went in

(08:42):
with a narrative about Steph Curry and about winning without us,
which was about winning, about winning without Uh, without winning
with winning without Kevin Durant, not winning without Clay Time
missed one game? He missed one game is big when
dray last time Draymond Green was one game? What happened? No,
he didn't game, but he didn't mean. But he didn't

(09:02):
live up to what what you thought he was gonna be.
When you you I'm gonna tell you, hold on, let
me say this, just leave me sometime. I'm gonna leave
you time. But you overplayed your hand. You thought that
what Steph was doing against the Portland trail Blazers was real.
They were they weren't. They weren't that good and you
don't better word they weren't. That the Portland was was

(09:24):
on a big stage that they weren't ready for. No,
And I tell you love using the best player James Harden?
Did I not? Did I not picked? Did I not pick?
That they were gonna? Now all of a sudden, you
just don't don't believe. I don't believe in them. And
all I'm saying to you it's straight and and and forward.
Is that Steph? Isn't that guy? He's a great week?

(09:46):
Maybe he isn't that guy? He ain't. I mean, I
gotta have a definition of that. Ain't that mean he
ain't gonna carry a team and win for you? He? No,
he did not? Did they not win the championship? But
he we six points a game? Ex tell you in circumstances,
I'm telling you what? No, no? What? The the last

(10:06):
being the leading score in three of the finals of
the five finals he's been in, rob G. Can you
get a calculated for me? You're ready, so give me
calculate this. Uh, first you got four and four and two.
You got four and two, I mean just one, four

(10:27):
and two? You got that? Then you got hurry up
because I need time? All right? What was it? Because
you don't have much to say? What was it? Next
year they had four and two, three and four and four?
So they were they were there were seven and six
and now they're one and three. So what is that
record now? Is that eight and ten? Eight and ten? Right?
Eight night nine eight nine? And with k D? See

(10:50):
why you went in the journey? Yeah? You know math
is bad? And with k D they're eight one in
the final. What's all I'm telling? You? Got all tell
a weekday way and said, that's what I'm telling. Okay,
you're done, rob ain't nine. We're supposed to be some
great night. Change the game by hand, change the game.
I don't know if you can he say that on

(11:11):
the air. Yes, all right, rob g. What is Kevin
Durant's record without Steph Curry in the final? No, you
gotta be stop me my turn. They both gotta do
it with the same players in the same men. No, well,
I let me help you out. And I don't even
need a calculator because I was good at math one journalism.

(11:32):
They're one and four, all right, So one in four
is not nearly as good at seven and nine, eight
and nine, ain't nine as horrible? Well, one in four
is a trump, she's a trend. Seven four is a
bombing changed basketball? Really, he's a nine rob and nine.
They just lost back to back games at home, and

(11:55):
he's supposedly the Cats me out and the game change
in the best shoot let's in the history of the NBA.
They can't even win home games. They lost two home
games to the Clippers or you with no Kevin Durant. Yeah,
Durant was there too. I'm just telling you about no no, no,
no no no. You brought you. You stuck your foot
in your mouth. So I guess Magic Johnson, don't knock

(12:18):
off the man. Stop it, let me talk. You've had
your turn with your little weak arguments. I guess Magic
Johnson's not the Cats me out because he got swept
in nineteen eighty three when James Worthy, a rookie, got hurt,
but he still had a prime Kareem abdul Jabar and
they got swept by Philadelphis. So he's not to catch

(12:38):
me out. Shot guys swept in the playoffs. He's not
the cast me out when you get swept, you lost
games at home, Your narrative never was coming to fruition. No,
I never gonna win the championship, and showed him I
would like the team better. Let me I know what
I said. That let me bring out, me bring facts,

(13:01):
and you you want to use your baby voice, all right,
because you don't have anything to say. Look out is
what I said, Steph Curry and the goal. I never
said they're better without k D. I said they don't
have to be. The questions not are they better without him?
It's all they better than everybody else without him. And

(13:24):
here's the deal. I never said Steph could lead him
to a championship without Clay Thompson being healthy, without Kiv
Looney being healthy, without den Marcus Cousin being I mean
decent and sailing himself. Yes, he's starting. Did you watch
Game two? He looked he's a ship way game one time?

(13:45):
Did you see I never said he could win a
championship with Draymond Green shooting eighteen percent that the championship
went back in fifteen without a dray Gudolla averaging seven
points on that team. They were all on that team.
They were younger then. And that's the deal. It hasn't
been a fair fight. He's averaging thirty three and you

(14:06):
think he's disappointing. That shows how good he is. Drop
be sure to catch live editions of the Odd Couple
with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern,
four pm Pacific. And we are just moments away from
what could be the end of an era at least
for the time being, or what could be perhaps the

(14:32):
beginning of a great comeback story. And I'll tell you Rob, obviously,
Kevin Durant is the story of the night. You know.
The Raptors, if they win, will be the story because
it'll be their first championship in franchise history, first championship
in Canadian basketball history. And they are not just the
Toronto Raptors. They are Canada's team. And I actually, Rob,

(14:57):
you know, I called a lot of flak on social
media and weeks ago when they were down to one
the Philadelphia and I said they were soft. But you
know what, I woke them up. People in Toronto should
be thinking, a brother. Seriously, I lit a fire under them.

(15:18):
Don't tell me they weren't different. Don't tell me Rod
Parker that they weren't different. Good reporter doesn't put himself.
I don't. I wasn't about reporting, I was about analyzing.
I was about saying my opinion, and my opinion lit
a fire under them. Don't get mad just because your

(15:42):
opinion didn't light a fire under I think England Patriots opponents,
I think they already had it going already, k they
got him and he moving well, dancing before the game
was dunking and warm up shooting. It's Jay his patterned jumper.
I'm telling you. Let me ask you. This is Andrea
goodallar healthy? Is he playing? Is Draymond Green playing? All

(16:04):
those guys to play Okay playing Steph? Okay? All those
guys playing Steph is average twenty seven or thirty three?
Maybe let me don't interrupt. I'm gonna let you have
your piece. Steph is average thirty three points a game.
Clay has average almost twenty five points a game. Now
I'm bringing back Kevin Durant. Don't tell me they don't

(16:25):
have a shot. That's all the brothers saying to tell
you said that. I'm not saying that either. I'm saying
they're winning tonight. You said that three nights to Kevin
Durant can stay throughout the whole game? Can we play
the ta you? So what does that mean? No, what
I was saying, I'm gonna be wrong tonight. I'm not
saying that, but I don't. I don't mean nothing your proclamations.

(16:48):
You said that when they went back to Oakland after
it was one one Oh, they got that. Oh say
it with Gusto, what's your call? Feeling like they probably uh,
they turned the series around, they didn't gay with it's
much base and all right, I'm saying it with basse.
Say just because you loud, don't mean you right. You

(17:09):
remember that when you hit the when you hit the
table and stand up, well sees you on YouTube. That's right,
because I want people to understand when I make a point.
And you know, I've been consistent the whole way through.
Toronto has been the better team in this series. And
you know what, there's some numbers here. Man. I just
can't get over about how bad that the uh that

(17:32):
they've been without KD. And my god is like the
Cavalry coming. But here's the difference between the Warriors between
the conference finals and and with with with KD and
without KD. I mean without KD. Between the finals and
the Western Conference finals that matter, they're playing a different team.
I'm just giving you a better I'm just telling you
how bad anybody in Portland I'm giving I know I didn't.

(17:56):
But I'm just giving you how bad they've been stuff
from them, because how bad they've been against Toronto ten
points less, nine rebounds less. Offensive rating has gone down
by eight point six and their defensive rating has gone up.
Defensive ratings are going up by nine, which is a
bad thing. So when you look at all of the things,
all the numbers two they were, aren't that good. They

(18:19):
just haven't played right. They haven't good. I agree. Stop
when you're living in the past, stop it. You're living
in the past. Did you hear this sing up history?
I'm living in the past, and to bring up the says,
and I'm a prisoner of the moment. It's about this.
This ambulance that they called the Toronto Raptors is about

(18:41):
the crashing to the hospital. That's how bad it is.
De terminal. I'm gonna stop you the terminal tonight. He's
explained that analogy. What whatever you just saying about the
the ambulance being the Toronto Raptors is about the crashing
to the What does that mean? The warrior? I have
no idea, what Darius have? All these injuries and all

(19:02):
these excuses right there, I called them a nation, call
them an ambulance and they're gonna crash into the hospital.
That's how bad things are for them. It's not gonna
And I can't wait to hear you after the game,
and you'll go, what do you expect? KD hadn't played
in the month. What do you expect? Clay Thompson, mister game,

(19:24):
what do you expect? Who else was hurt? Looney? Oh?
I don't. You can't expect to win a championship when
you're DeMarcus cousin that he's Give me a team. Give
me a team that won a championship with that many injuries.
I'm just telling you that you're getting mister. I've been
covering the league since nineteen eighty seven. Yeah, give me

(19:45):
a team that won the championship with that many injuries.
Nobody claim miss one game? He okay, fine, he missed
one game. Now let me talk claim miss one game Cavine.
Looney missed three games and is playing with a fracture
in his chest. Okay, he's gonna be the region. Why

(20:05):
his cousins is a shell of him? Off the ball?
He can't even get off the ground. Game two, they
were about to name him the MVP and of fun.
He's getting this shot blocked by a stationary Mark Gassol. Okay,
Draymond has not been himself shooting eighteen percent. I repeat,
eighteen percent from beyond the arc. No Steph cannot do

(20:31):
it by himself. No Steph and Clay cannot do it
by themselves. This team has always been stress in numbers
where the strength and the numbers has not been there.
So thirty three points from Steph, twenty five points from
Clay has not been enough. But mister Durrant is coming

(20:53):
back and he's not gonna shoot eighteen percent from Trey.
What leave you me? What do you expect? He hadn't
played in thirty days. You expect him to get to
shoot the ro expect him to come back and do
this and do that to expect him to come back
and play well. When Clay came to Game four, he

(21:14):
played forty something minutes and played great, twenty eight points
and they got an l right because they gave help.
Just remember that, Rob Parker, I remember that you need
hell as an NBA analyst. I understand why you feel
you got your feelings involved. He looking at he looking

(21:35):
at usc Chris, Please Chris play. I didn't say that.
He didn't say, like Chris, that's rob So I didn't
say that. All I said to Rob G is you
feel a desperation, and not only Warriors, but in Chris's voice,
the desperation that he's supposed to be the NBA guy

(21:56):
and he's been wrong so many times. This postseason stopped,
and Mister's gonna beat Philip. All I know is whoever
mister Denver's gonna make the Western Conference on whoever wins tonight.
I don't care who wins. Tomorrow's show is gonna be
fantastic because someone's gonna be eating Crow and it's gonna

(22:16):
be lovely. I'm gonna beat it to you. I tell
you this, if Golden State goes down, I will not
leave the game with seven minutes left, not say a
word to anybody else, and just walk out with my
tail between my life. I didn't walk out, Rob G.
What would you do? Ifever? Now, I'm just saying. I
was trying to be polite and like, you know, give

(22:38):
them space. That's all. Who had nothing to do. I
went outside. For those that don't know, this was when
the Patriots beat Kansas City. I didn't see championship. I
didn't leave, and a dozen other friends are watching the game.
And when it became evident that New England was going
to win, they didn't win, went to overtime. I was back,

(23:01):
but it looked like they were gonna win in regulation,
and Rob just left. I didn't no, no bye, no head,
not no fellas. I'm out of here, no no laying
down twenty dollars, rang the wings, he ate nothing. He
just left, did I tucking walked out right and kept going.

(23:23):
And somehow someone I never loved, somehow, some way he
heard that Kansas City got back in the game and
forced overtime, and here he comes, Here he comes. I
was out in some air and I don't smoke. I
was just getting there. He was gone for ten minutes
and he came back. Now, I will not do that tonight.

(23:44):
I will pay for my wings, and I will sit
there and take it if it happens. But it's not
gonna happen. Golden State is back. Wait a minute, at
least for a night. I'm not predicting they're gonna win.
The city. Well, I'm staying with my pick Golden State.
In six. You want to talk about you want to

(24:05):
talk about maths? Can you figure that out? I got
Pick Integrity. I got Pick integrity. He gotta take seven.
He got Pick Integrity, but he had had to be seven.
He all of a sudden, you gave up on Milwaukee.
I mean didn't you have I mean you had Toronto.
That's where I learned my Pick integrity. Never never, you know,
I'm not changing anymore. I was trying to be all
you got all right too. I was trying to be

(24:26):
more analysts, Like, look, I picked Milwaukee. Did you see
that Katie couldn't even jump? Did you see that for
the jump of what happened there? I got here
