(01:33):
a lot of fun. Obviously, as we get closer to
the games being played, we'll have a lot to talk
about with him. As the NFL it's a little bit closer,
and also made a big announcement today they donated, or
they pledged to give two hundred and fifty million dollars
over the next ten years to fight systemic racism. So
(01:57):
we'll ask Cliff about that as well. But we got NFL,
we got NBA, We've got plenty of things to get
into with you guys, And let me introduce the Odd
Couple crew before we get role. We even got a
little bit of baseball with Rod Parker's Inside the Parker

do with that out. I actually like it better this way.
Rod because now I'm like Antissa, I'm eager to see
what you played or what you requested. Some good stuff.
The last few weeks, Alex has done a good job.
(03:03):
It's good. Chimed in as well. It's been great. So

so you're off next week all week? Wow? All lift

me right for show. Stop stop it. Mister Antarctica, He'saly Girls,
(04:13):
Golden Girls, Cruise. Those are my only two weeks off
all year. I just do it big when I take off. Yeah, okay, okay,
we got David Gascon on the updates. All right, rob
Let's go to the NFL and we know we've we've
talked about it. Everybody knows that when the NFL players
released that video, very influential video, that they called on
(04:35):
the league to apologize for squelching the protests last year.
The peaceful protest called on them to condemn systemic racism
and say that black lives matter. Patrick Mahomes was in
that video. One of many stars, but certainly the biggest.
You had O b J. Say, Kwine, Barkleague, Ezekiel Elliott,
(04:56):
several other players, but none bigger. There's no bigger star.
I mean, I guess Tom Brady is still technically bigger,
but Patrick Mahomes is the present and future of the
NFL in my view. So he was on that and
he talked today, was it Rogie or yesterday? Yesterday, talked
(05:16):
with reporters and addressed why he decided to go ahead
and get on that video. I've been lucky enough to
grow up with a lot of great role models around
me and just trying to find and listen to them
as they talked to me and then other people around
the league who I feel like I've done it the
right way and listen to the advice they give me
and then trying to make the best informed decision. I've
(05:36):
been giving this platform, and I want to make sure
that I can do whatever I can to make make
the world a better place, and whichever way that is.
Here's the question, Rob, I'm gonna throw at you, because
Lebron James the best player in basketball, you know, past
decade or so, he's very outspoken. He's obviously doing a
lot as far as social justice, and even now he
(05:58):
just he's more now he started more than a vote.
Obviously a playoff is more than an athlete, and he
and some other athletes and entertainers, Kevin Hart and some
others are going to be registering people to vote and
also pointing out all of the ways that some maybe
trying to keep them from voting. So it's a very
(06:21):
good cause. But we know Lebron what he does, Patrick Mahons,
the best player in the NFL at least so far,
is showing a willingness to speak out on social issues.
This is what I want to ask you, Rod Parker Ken,
Patrick Mahomes be as big as lebronri or the Lebron
James of the NFL in this regard and in terms
(06:43):
of social justice. Can he be the Lebron of the NFL.
I don't think so. And he's a big star, no
doubt about it. I'm not convinced that the platform, because
football players play a limited amount of games, most people
(07:03):
know who quarterbacks are. I'll give you that, but but
I'm not so. I just don't think it's the same
platform that NBA players have. When you talk about the
public people buying their sneakers knowing them more so, even
outside of I don't see Patrick Mahomes putting out a
movie like Lebron has. I don't see Patrick Mahomes with
(07:27):
a sit down ripped off of my idea barbershop TV show.
I'm still sounding bitter, a little bit y. Yeah, I
know it's not coming. I don't see those things that
That doesn't mean that diminishes him and he can't do
what he can do. Chris, I'm I'm happy because I
(07:49):
did write a column on dead Spin when there was
nothing coming from him when it first happened, and I'm
glad he's taking a horse by the reins, and he's
out there and he's talking about trying to make a difference.
I think that's all great. I just think Lebron's on
a bigger stage and and I think he resonates a
little bit more uh with the masses than does a
(08:13):
football player. And it doesn't mean that I do. I
don't think that football has and and and I think
a lot of it has to do with the way
that football is still run. Black athletes um haven't been
willing to fight and put up a stink. We saw
(08:36):
what happened in the NBA with Donald Sterling. The players
stepped up and got him removed. NFL players aren't the
same way when when they when the owners pushed back
on them, the players crumbled. I don't think people look
at NFL players the same way that they do. They
can't even fight for their own healthcare. How in the
world are they gonna fight for other things when they
(08:59):
aren't even willing to be united in their best interests.
So I think that there are question marks about NFL players,
how really strong they are and what kind of impact
they can have. I agree overall that I don't think
Mahomes will become the Lebron James, if you will, the
NFL in terms of his outspokenness and social justice presence
(09:22):
and all that. But that's for totally different reasons than you. First,
let me start off by saying this, I actually think
and I believe rob I was the first one on
the planet to say this, Patrick Mahomes can be Jordan
Esque in terms of his ability on the field. So
I actually think he could end up being a better
(09:44):
football player than Lebron is basketball accomplishing. More like, I've
said that he could be the goat, and we think
Lebron is second. Some people think he's a goat, but
we think he's second. So I think Mahomes can end
up even being better at this sport than Lebron is
at his But I agree with you that I don't
(10:04):
think he can have the social impact. I don't think
it has anything to do with football though, because football
is not the global sport that basketball is. But then
the United States, obviously it's King Tom Brady is every
bit as big as Lebron James. Now he doesn't use
it obviously for social issue nobody. Yeah, but if Mahomes
(10:28):
decided to use it. I'm the fact that they only
like football is bigger they actually have. I would say
they've got more white fans than the NF. I mean
they confidently do. They got more fans, how many who? Who?
How many times more fans than the NF NBA does.
So I don't think football will hold him back. I
(10:50):
just don't think he's kind of positioned. First of all,
I don't expect him to do all the things Lebron's done. Now. Granted,
at this stage of Lebron's career, I don't know that
any body could have expected him to do what he's done.
So we'll see how Mahomes grows and stuff, But I
don't see Mahomes attacking issues like Lebron does, although I'll
(11:13):
leave that open. It's a possibility, I guess. But I
just think, just starting off here, what Lebron James did
for his buddies Maverick Carter and Rich Paul. And obviously
they deserve the credit because they've worked hard and if
they couldn't handle it, they wouldn't be where they're at.
(11:35):
But he put them in position where Rich Paul is
now arguably the biggest agent in basketball, and now his
clutch Sports has bought up agencies to represent football and
baseball players, you know, Maverick Carter, spring Hill Entertainment, Uninterrupted,
you know, an office on the Warner Brothers lit like
(11:59):
they're both moguls in their own rights, and when Lebron retires,
they're going to be power players for as long as
they want. And so just that alone is huge. Nobody
who was it it was Stephen Jackson has said maybe
overstated a little bit. He said, nobody had done that yet.
(12:22):
Everybody had brought their boys to hang around with them
and you know, kick it with them on the road
and take care of their boys financially. But nobody put
their boys in position to dominate in their own right
apart from Lebron. And yeah, of course Lebron knowing Lebron
and all that that's helped. But that we talk about
(12:45):
all the time, Rob, I mean, Adam Silver is his
family knew, David Stern, you know what I'm saying like this,
this is the American way. We talked about all the coaches,
you know, Kyle, Shannonhan and people that knew somebody. So
I think that alone is huge. And as you and
I said, Michael Jordan, Fred Whitfield is high in his organization.
(13:08):
Ry Higgins a good friend of his. So other players
have done a few things like this, But that's huge
in and of itself. And I think the way Patrick
Mahons was raised, obviously his father was a pro baseball player,
he had money. He was more middle if not upper class,
and so he is not in He just doesn't even
have to lift people like that, And so I don't
(13:32):
think I think that's why he won't become the lebron
of the NFL in terms of social justice. But I
don't think it's because football is holding him back. Yeah,
I just disagree. I don't think football players have just
the same voice and reach the same people. Most have
helmets on. Most people can identify most football players. They
(13:54):
could be in a room with a guy and unless
you tell them that they're a football player, they don't.
Not him. I'm just I'm just in general and general yeah,
but but but he's a quarterback. You know that. I
get that. But I'm just saying I don't. The players
to me have not come off at all a being
(14:17):
of that ilk at more of the uh not standing
alone and standing out. It's it's more like you gotta
be a part of the team. You can't step you
can't separate yourself. That's why Colin Kaepernick was shunned because
he wasn't doing what the team wanted to do. He
wanted to do what he wanted to do. But he's
(14:38):
just saying, I just think it's a difference. I think
it's a different league. I just it is. But but
if Kaepernick was good as good as Mahomes, he wouldn't
have been shunned. He would have probably been celebrated. He
would not have been shunned. And so look at Odell
Beckham junior. Look how big he is. He's huge. I
(14:59):
mean he's he's not even you know, the best wide
receiver in the league. He's out of position, that's not,
you know, the top position in the league. And yet
he is humongous if he wanted to use it, and
to his credit, he was in the video as well.
But if he wanted to speak out on issues like that,
he's not Lebron James, but he could definitely have an impact.
(15:21):
So I get what you're saying and that football players
generally haven't done that, But that doesn't mean a football
player can't do it. Because let's face it, before Lebron,
it had been a long time before basketball players did it.
You've seen some kareem a little bit, and you know
a few others, but for the most part, most basketball
players didn't. We we've talked about Jordan, Doctor Jay didn't
(15:43):
really address issues like that Magic didn't. You know, once
he retired, he became a great businessman. But you know
a lot of players in both sports haven't done that.
So we'll see. All right, let's throw it out to
the callers eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox eight seven,
seven nine nine six sixty three sixty nine. Could Patrick
(16:05):
Mahomes become the Lebron James of the NFL? Could he
have the same off the field impact that Lebron has.
We'll continue the conversation with you. Next, it's the Ey Couple.

Oh yeah, loved it. It was a great show. Great
Alex's Rob did you watch it? And reruns? I did?
(16:51):
All right, here's the quiz, Rob g you could participate. Two?
What was the bar that they went to all the time?
And three's company that's the name of it called Sporty Cuts,
the Regal Bigal that's right? Yes? And TV theme song Thursday.
(17:11):
Here on the Odd Couple. That's right, We are coming
to you live from the GetGo Fox Sports Radio Studios.
It's easy to say fifteen percent of more of your
car shooters with Geico. Go to Geico dot com or
call eight hundred nine four seven a ut O. The
only hard part is figuring out which way is easier?
All right, Rob, let's get to these calls. Can Patrick
Mahomes be the Lebron James of the NFL in terms
(17:34):
of outspoken? This social justice? All that? All right? Chris
and New York. You're on the Odd Couple of Fox
Sports Radio. What you got Chris? All right? So, first off,
I want to say thank you Christ and Rob for
doing this every day. It's definitely made these hard times better.
Thank you man. We appreciate them. But I would have
to agree with Robin with this one. I think football
(17:56):
players just don't have the cloud as basketball players. Like
the helmet is definitely a big aspect of it where
you can't see the players. And what made O'Dell so
famous was that catch and that blonde hair. So Patrick
Mahomes he has that weird voice, like he doesn't have
the charm as O'Dell or someone like that. Where basketball
(18:18):
players you have Lebron Yea, Kyrie, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry,
like all those players are bigger than Patrick. Let me
ask you this, if Tom Brady was really just outspoken
about issues, whatever it might be, you don't think he
could have been he'd be huge, Yeah, because he has
(18:38):
that white fan beat, so like I think Mahomes will
have that though, because you know obviously he's by racial.
But but but Chris made a point, Chris, and I'm
wonder what you think about it? The voice factor? What
do you think about that? What he's what Chris said,
voice meaning just his literal voice. Is that how he
(18:59):
says no? I mean, look at Mike Tyson in his
voice Tyson seriously no, but if he I mean not
because of his voice? No, But but it doesn't match
as all. I'm just the voice. He brought up the
voice because I think it's it's legit. It's not a
it's just it's not like he can change it. That's
his voice. But he sounds sounds a little like he
(19:23):
doesn't have the street crib that does you know? And
he doesn't have the base in his voice. Rob. Yeah,
but if he were, I mean, I think he doesn't
have that street crib. But he's gonna. I think he's
so good that he just transcends that. All right, Sean
and Sacramento, you're on. They a couple of Fox Sports Radio.
What's up, Sean? Hey, Michaels from another mother? Man, how
(19:46):
y'all holding up? Man? What's up? We're good? Man, We're good. Hey.
First of all, I don't know if people gave y'all
enough prows for that stirring debate with Doug I leave yesterday,
but thank y'all so much for that. Man. That was amazing.
That was that was more eloquent, more intelligent than some
of the presidential that basically got going on right now.
So man, I was amazing. One more of that and
so real quick my um from my from my take man.
(20:09):
I feel like people are underselling how big Patrick Mahomes
is with the youth right now. I got three boys
between the ages of five and fifteen, and not one
of them really watched NFL too much, but all of
them play Madden and they all know exactly who Patrick
Mahomes is. And Rob, you're talking about that voice Kermit
the Frog voys worked for him the entire time and
game to us years of a nation. So you're, hey, Sean,
(20:32):
I can't argue with that. Kermit the Frog had a
big career, no doubt about it. That is that is
you know, he's kind of like and I mean obviously
they might even look similar, but he's kind of like, uh, Steph, Yeah,
you know, Steph doesn't Steph Scott Street Craig because he's
just so good. But you know what I'm saying, Like,
(20:53):
you know, he's not from the hood and all that,
you know, and and and I could see he's got
a huge following. I could see my homes kind of
being like that. But the only problem is light skinned
guys are played out, so it might not work for
my halves. That that that that I don't even I
don't know where you got that from Tristed in North Carolina.
(21:14):
You're a couple. I mean, you know, I know in
every Black movie, doing good Tristan, what's up. Yeah, I
wanted to kind of allude off your guys to take
I agree with both of you guys, Um. I mean,
I'm not going to really debulgie you know, too deep
into because you know, you guys pretty much said exactly
(21:35):
how what I wanted to say. But one thing I
wanted to add into it is I don't think the
NFL fans would get the same reaction as the NBA fans,
and I believe so they would give more of a
negative reaction. So the owners don't want that, so they're
not you know, they don't you know that the coaches
are not gonna want their players to put them in
a position to have some sort of anti moss between
(21:56):
the coaches and the owners. To me, I feel like
the NFL those churches are more consisted of kind of
the good old boys, you know from now. You know
that I agree years you know why, But that's a
good that's a good point. What if my homes though,
is you know what if in seven years from now,
(22:16):
he's got four Super Bowls? You know, and I think
that's pretty lofty right there. Why Tom Brady's won three
and what the last five years? Six years? Now? You
said four and seven years. Boy, he's already got one,
so that would be like four in his first nine
years of his career. I mean it's lofty, but it's
lofty to win the MVP in the Super Bowl in
(22:38):
your first two years too. Let's let's squeeze one more.
In real quick, Mark in Sacramento, you're on the odd
couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Mark? What's going on? Gentlemen?
Real quick? This is a good, good debated, a good conversation,
But I think I see it a little bit differently.
Lebron James is at the end of his career. He's
become this man. He wasn't this man in his third
(23:00):
year in the NBA. And the topic that they're talking
about as a race. If this young man decides to
talk about this topic at this age, let him get
in the league seventeen years and go to meet with
Barack and Michelle Obama and hang out and and support
them to learn about politics like Lebron has, he may
have that kind of voice after year seventeen but it's
(23:20):
something fair to say this young man at his age,
being in the league three years and compare him to
where Lebron has come both as a player and a
man and how his voice got here. I think that's
kind of unfair to Patrick Mahomes. I admire the young
dude for jumping in a topic that a lot of
people don't like to talk about. And when they when
you talk about it, they say, you're playing the race card.
(23:42):
That dude jumped in hand first. I like that, Well,
you're making it. He makes an interesting point, robbing that
Lebron correct me if I'm wrong, But his first real
foray into this was in trav with Trayvon Martin right
in Miami, in Miami when they yeah the Hoodies. So
that was his what I don't remember what year was
(24:04):
in Miami, but seven years. And remember Cleveland probably was
his ninth or tenth year in the league, right, probably
his tenth year in the league. So yeah, I mean
that's a good point by our friend Mark. All Right.

How you guys doing grig? Great? It's been too long, man,
(25:10):
we haven't it's had you on since the Super Bowl.
I don't think. Yeah, it's been a while, man, it's
been a while. Well, look, you you have been out
spoken on these social issues. Let's just start here. What
do you think about you know, what's going on, the
extended protests, the players speaking out, people of various races
(25:30):
supporting this, statues being torn. I mean, it's this thing
is really big, Um, what are you thinking about it? All?
You know what it's it's it's all interesting from the
standpoint of you know, I think I think COVID played
a big role in this, right, because a lot of
people are just sitting at home. They don't have the
distractions of life and work and everything else that kind
(25:53):
of goes with their day to day, and I think
that's why it's kind of took a took on a
life of its own worldwide. I think it's needed. I
think I'm happy to see the movement. You know, it's
one of those things that you just, um, you know,
I was one of those guys that that was protesting,
you know myself, Michael Bennett. You know, Seahawks were kind
of they were cool with guys protesting, right, But I
(26:16):
do know a wide range of guys throughout the league
that were told, hey, this team doesn't do that, right.
So I think with the NFL things are gonna change
as well. But I'm excited to see that a lot
of people are just listening more so than anything, right,
not just reacting off with the narrative of the media
and everything else. People are listening and they see what's
going on and they're getting behind it. Cliff, you just
(26:37):
mentioned like some players are probably told, hey, you better
not do that. Here. And one of the loudest voices
in the NFL, who owns the most valuable franchise and
has a radio show and all the other stuff, and
his personal friends with the president, but we haven't heard
(26:58):
a peep, um, Jerry Jones. And what does that say
to you? When this guy speaking about everything and always
has a press conference after every game and always has
a comment about everything, we haven't heard anything from him.
I mean it's one of those things, you know. Even
(27:19):
with the NFL coming out with the statement, right Roger
Goodell comes out with the statement says, hey, we stand
with you and and all these different things, I honestly
believe the NFL still believes what they believes. Right. It's
still the same NFL of six months ago, right where
where they were so anti you know, guy's protest and
bringing shedding light on you know, some of the different
(27:40):
issues that a lot of us are dealing with in
our communities. Right. Um, So I think they're still there.
But I also believe that they have to like all
their endorsements, all their sponsorships, all there, all the companies
that partner up with them, have all came out and said, hey,
we support this movement, right, so it's only right that
will follow suit as well. Right, So, you know, because
at the end of day, the NFL, I mean, we
(28:02):
all know it's the seventeen eighteen billion dollar business. So
if the people that are cutting the check for the
NFL are apologizing, well we got to say something too.
And I kind of feel like that's where they're at
because again, six months ago, they still have the same mindset.
So I don't know if anything has changed from a
lot of the ownership. I can't say all of them,
but a lot of the ownership, I'm not sure if
that their opinion has changed an it much. Rob and
(28:23):
I have said that what would really show that Goodell
meant his apology or you know what he said when
the players demanded it with the video, is if Colin
Kapepernick gets signed somewhere. I think that needs to happen.
Do you feel I don't know that he will. You
think he will? And do you think that the NFL
(28:43):
needs to make that happen to kind of make good
on their their statement. I see, I think he will
get opportunities. You know you're hearing. I think coach Carroll
has come out and said something I think he will get.
He said he regretted not signing him in twenty seventeen.
Who's there backup right now? Because your guests is good,
(29:04):
he obviously be a good backup for Russell Wilson, you
know what I mean? For sure? For sure. Now here's
here's the thing, though, I think I think he will
get opportunities to work out. I think he will get
opportunities to possibly be on the team. Now does he
get signed, I don't know. Because they can play the
age thing, you know, three years out of the league,
all this other stuff, right, they can do that. But
most importantly is getting behind the message that he tried
(29:27):
to put out there about four years ago and putting
some money behind that, putting some efforts behind the actual
issue at hand, because that's in all reality, that's that's
what Cap cares about. I mean, of course, he wants
to play ball, and he lost his job because he
was trying to do something special. Well, if he doesn't
get a job, but he doesn't get the opportunity to
kind of you know, work out or whatnot. The main
objective through this whole process is getting behind policy, getting
(29:50):
behind police reform, getting behind all these issues that he
lost his job about. And I think that will somewhat
suffice as far as for you know what Cap has
done and how he changed things up, Cliff, the last
time with Kaepernick, it was counting who was kneeling with Cap,
(30:10):
and now this time around or this coming season, it'll
probably be who's not kneeling. You'll be looking at the
people who are not kneeling? Am I right? As far
as a reversal and what we saw four years later,
how what will the NFL do? How can they try
to avoid there being a controversial or the narrative being
(30:32):
flipped again to the flag. I suggested that they eliminate
the national anthem and the players want to kneel in
the center of the field or whatever before the game, fine,
but try to take that narrative out. What do you
think the NFL response will be? And Jerry Jones again
who threatened players that they wouldn't wear Cowboys uniform if
they kneeled. What happens if half the team kneels on
(30:55):
a Cowboys squad? You know what I think? Again? I
think the NFL follow suit with the movement in general again, right,
because whoever sponsors the NFL. Right now, every one of
those people have or whoever cuts checks to the NFL,
should I say, have all came out. So I think
they're gonna follow suit because it doesn't affect the bottom
line anymore. Because again, that's all they care about is
(31:17):
the bottom line. They didn't want to ruffle any feathers.
They didn't want to, you know, mess with the fans
emotions and different things like that. Well now fans probably
are behind it, so they're gonna probably be okay with it.
You know, someone like Jerry Jones or some of the
owners that have an issue, I think they will just
follow suit. They might not take the knee, you know,
they might not do any of that stuff, but I
(31:37):
see them being okay at least this season. I see
them being okay with guys protesting because I think majority
of the league is gonna protest. I think the majority
of the league is they're diving deep in. They're getting
their research, and they're understanding where people are coming from.
And you know, obviously if you dive into it, you're
gonna think you need to protest too. You know, you're
gonna think there's change as well. That there's a change
that needs to be made as well. So I see
(32:00):
the NFL basically kind of follow suit with everybody else. Cliff,
we got a minute left. Rob and I were talking
before you came on about you know, Pat Mahomes was
in that video. He obviously is probably the best player
in the league. So we were wondering, you know, could
the NFL handle like if he became his outspoken as
Lebron James. Rob was saying he doesn't see an NFL
(32:22):
player being able to do that in the culture that
they have and all that, I was saying, he could.
What you think the NFL could handle a player who
was his outspoken as Lebron James is I don't think
so because the same reason they've never had one before, right,
And I'm saying it from this perspective, the NFL is
(32:42):
all about the shield. They don't care about the players.
They don't care. It's about protecting the ship. That's the
first thing they tell you, Hey, we need to protect
the shield, and we need to protect the names on
the helmet, not even the names on Becky Jerseys. Right,
So it's all about protecting the shield. So if a
Pat Mahomes and some of those guys, I think collectively
they can make an impact. And that's the thing now
the NFL, this first time the NFL is going, They're
(33:04):
going into the season with about five six black quarterbacks
that are at the top of their game right now.
So anyone, and we all know quarterbacks sale tickets, We
all know. Quarterbacks are the ones making the post game
and everything else. Right, that's the face of those organizations.
So if the quarterback stands up, all those quarterbacks stand up. Collectively, yeah,
I think it can be impactful. But one individual. I
(33:24):
don't think the NFL allowed that to happen. That's our man,
Cliff April, super Bowl champion, man, great stuff. We appreciate it.
Just endorse me again and discard not really really man,
Cliff April. We you know, we we go back to Motown.
You know what I'm saying there. Detroit. You know it, Detroit, York, Cliff,
(33:45):
don't spent I spent twenty two years in that city.
They know it. Yes, sir, we appreciate you too, Thank you, buddy.
All right, man, Peace, Cliff, More, I couple coming your way.

(34:33):
you know every Thursday my baseball podcast drops. It is
called Inside the Parker. I want you to listen, share rate,
and subscribe. And here's one of these segments we call
Getting Robbed. To lead off, it's Getting Robbed and keep
him on. Rob's hot take on the three biggest stories
(34:54):
in Major League Baseball. Stop the presses, Wait minute, stop
the nonsense. I can't believe what I heard out of
Saint Louis. Build de Witch Junior, the owner and chairman
of the Saint Louis Cardinals, one of the greatest franchises
in baseball history. I called Saint Louis the greatest baseball
(35:19):
town in America. That city gets three million people every
year no matter what. That city has run two football
teams out of town. They ran the Saint Louis Cardinals
out of town, sent to Arizona. They ran the Rams
out of town, sent them back to LA and build
(35:40):
the Witch. Junior had the nerve, the audacity, the unmitigated
goal to say that baseball isn't very profitable in the
midst of all that's going on. Really, it's an eleven
billion dollar business, baseball that's set a revenue record seventeen
(36:03):
years in a row. The fifties weren't the greatest era
of baseball. It's now. Baseball has never been healthier, never
made more money. And I just think this is hollow
to say that during this situation and during the negotiations,
because I'd ask yourself one thing, if it's not profitable,
(36:24):
mister Bill DeWitt Jr. Why not sell the team? Why
would you stay in the business that's not profitable. I
don't see any Major League Baseball teams up for sale.
What does that tell you? There? It is. That's the
podcast Inside the Parker available on the Herd podcast network.
(36:45):
It drops every Thursday morning. Please we're going We're going
full strength so far on it with baseball. And I
was on the Herd this morning with Colin and he
said that he had talked to some people, some people
in the know said that the deal for baseball to
return is very close and that they expect to get
(37:08):
a deal done. We've heard the commissioner very confidently say
that he expects it to happen, and I do too.
The owners offered a seventy six game schedule, the players
wanted an eighty nine game schedule. Was at me eighty
or eighty two. Kind of meet in the middle and
that's where we'll be right back, and that'll be just fine.
(37:31):
Start the season around July tenth. It would have been
great July fourth, because everybody knows baseball goes with the
fourth or July hot Dogs, apple Pie, Chevrolet, all that
good stuff. So, m yeah, I'm not worried anymore. I
really feel good about it. It's quieted down. You don't
hear that much chirping back and forth, which means that
(37:52):
they're probably talking and they're probably going to get a
deal done, so baseball can be back, and it would
be back before the NBA, which is a little weird
because the NBA's definitely taken a lot of time to
get the players back. But baseball we'll be here this summer.
We're not sure if we'll be able to go to
(38:14):
the ballpark. That's probably the only part that really hurts, because,
as you guys know, I love going to the ballpark.
I hang out with a lot of friends all over
the country. I love going to baseball nothing. There's not
better quality time than spending time with a friend at
a baseball game to catch up, watch the game, have
a couple of dogs and a tall one, and there
(38:36):
you go. It's as good as that. All right, Odd

I'm at Chris Underscore, Bruce Hard on Twitter. Chris Bruce
Hard sixty eight on The Graham We got trolling and
rolling with Martin Weiss coming up at the bottom of
the hour, but some really really fun and interesting talk
(39:38):
about to come your way and not it happened so often.
I mean, it's we talk about it a lot, but
it's it's always fun. And the people in New England
or the Tom Brady haters or whatever, they're always giving
us something. They're always giving us something. And sure former
(40:01):
Patriot Christian Fourier has said something that is bonkers. I'm
just gonna let you hear it and then I'll interpret. See.
I think that this offense is better off without him,
and it has nothing to do with Brady's skill set.
It's not because he's not good or he can't throw it,
(40:22):
or he's lost some speed on his fastball. It's because
where he was in his career, his age, what he
wanted to achieve and what the Patriots were trying to
achieve were completely different. So it was never gonna work out.
This offense is not going to be able to move
forward with Brady as the quarterback, not because he sucks.
Those throwaways were important. It's because he wasn't willing to adapt.
(40:46):
There's the difference. He wasn't willing to let to kill
Harry grow all right. You didn't even let him get
to the part I really wanted to lamb base anymore.
And here it is because he said right now. He
said this year, right now, the offense is better off
(41:11):
with Tom Brady. They are better off without him this year. Yes,
that's where he went off the rails. Rob Parker, I
get it, I get it. I don't think they were
going to win another super Bowl with Tom Brady. He's
forty three years old, for goodness sake. I get that
they're going forward. Says we're not gonna win a super
(41:33):
Bowl with him. Then we can develop the young kid,
Jared Stidham, and eventually, you know, maybe stidhamall show as
he can play and eventually will get back to being
a playoff team down the road. But no, that was
not enough for Christian Fourier, friend of the Show. He
(41:57):
had to go ahead and say they are better right now,
right now, Rob Parker, Jared Stidham has thrown four NFL passes,
one of them was an interception. But you're better off
(42:17):
without Tom Brady. Now we have absolutely positively. No idea
whether or not Jared Stidham can play, none, But you're
better off without him. Now what this is, man, You
(42:37):
were twelve and four last year, you are two years
removed from a super Bowl championship, and you're about to
play a guy who wasn't even that good in college.
But you're better off without Tom Brady. Now, did they
(43:01):
go out and signed Cam Newton in the last hour?
Did we miss something? And and Nikill Harry, Nikill Harry.
He played seven games, Tom Brady didn't derailed nik Kill Harry,
Nikill Harry derailed himself with his injuries. Enough of the madness,
(43:29):
enough of the killing Tom Brady. And I know Fourier
as predicted, he'll be the MVP and lee Tampa Bay
to the super Bowl, Which just makes this even more ridiculous.
What in the world could he be talking about? Rob Parker.
This is lunacy. He's from you, but not from Christian Fourier.
(43:57):
He's spot on. He also was the one who came out.
I was on this show up on w EI just
yesterday with the guys, and Christian is a former Patriots player.
He's got his connection and he talks to people and
he watched tom Brady's last pass of his career with
the Patriots went to the Tennessee Titans, and it was
(44:20):
a pick six. He listened and watched just he just
take a listen to tom Brady's highlight from a year ago,
worst ten years by Tom Brady. That's why Christian, four
years it's up in boss, the super Bowls, the super Bowl.
It wasn't. No, it wasn't. I think it was. It
was not. It was last two years ago. You've been
playing ever since we started the show, and he knows
(44:44):
that a forty three year old quarterback with a noodle
arm is not the guy you win the super Bowl
next year. I have no idea because this is I
just know it's not just because he's been going off
the top in Boston him. No, he's in Boston. He
has a connection. He's talked to the people. They've seen
(45:05):
Tom Brady in practice. They know what's going on. And
you could blame just like everybody. The whole narrative was
Tom Brady the more we let any other quarterback, and
then last year you can't expect him to do an
He don't have anybody, So which one isn't it's Bob,
you had your time. You had your time. Can you
(45:27):
pipe down? Can you cut his mic? Enough with the
Chris Bussard, So something legitimate. I've been saying. No, me
and Christian are lockstep on this and Chris. The difference
is he's a former player who's looking at an objective
(45:47):
and I'm just an objective reporter and you're just a
Brady fanboy and you can't see anything past your love
for Tom Brady. That's that's where we are, absolutely, little Bell,
because that's true. Christ is a Tom Brady and that's
that's where we come. And he can't look at this objectively.
(46:09):
Christian Fourier told everybody before it's not making any The
Patriots aren't the Patriots aren't gonna offer them him a contract,
and everybody's scared. He knew something. Somebody told him that
this is an opinion. No, this doesn't make sense when
you say Brady's about to go to Tampa where they
(46:31):
were seven and nine last year and lead them to
the Super Bowl. No, he's talking about where the Patriots
are and having a forty three year old noodlum quarterback
on his way out that the Patriots would stin him
that they obviously have a feel for him and feel
like he couldn't be their quarterback of the future. That's
why they've given him the opportunity because if they didn't,
(46:54):
there were plenty of quarterbacks available, If they really didn't
believe in him, that they could have gone. Well, no,
they're not. Okay, how in the world then, because remember, Rad,
he's not making the playoffs either. Bright, he's not making
the playoffs either. Chris neither run by saying I get
(47:15):
it for the future. He said, this year they're better,
And of course, I mean you picked the Patriots to
miss the playoffs for like the last seven years. No,
I have not. That is not true. WHI No, I
picked him to make the playoffs. Come on, Chris, not now,
you're being silly in that division in the AFC least,
I've always picked them to make the playoffs. But okay,
(47:37):
so they're not gonna make it this year. But they're
better without the goats That may go Joe Montanas even
if he's second in your strange rankings, they're better off
without the second best quarterback of all time. Yes, they
are better at this point because Tom Brady's not that guy.
(47:58):
People will find out in Tampa, and then Chris will
be on the radio week after week. What are you
wigs mean? Heat forty three? That's the built in excuse
that that that will have that button for Chris, because
that's what they'll say when Tom Brady looks awful and
he can't deliver the ball downfield and he gets sacked
and and and beat up and and and harassed, and
(48:22):
then they'll say they don't protect for Tom. That's why, no,
wonder if Jamis Wishton had thirty interceptions he had to
force the ball out of the pocket because he didn't
have time to throw. Watch and see. That'll be the
debate that'll beat up the talking points. That'll be the narrative.
Christian Fourier, who was entrenched in Beantown, who has sources,
(48:46):
who knows what the talk is amongst the players in
that dressing room, is on the money here, It wasn't.
Julian Edelman. Julian Edelman was all but begging him to stay.
You think Julian Edelman feels this way. Heck, you think
to kill Harry feels this way. No, And look, I've
(49:10):
said it before and this is not trying to cover
my basis or anything. Yes, it is here, we go.
It's just it's just a fact. Roy Parker. You don't
want to deal with it, but it's a fact. At
some point. Tom Brady's going to fall off. We know
him last No, they won twelve games. What what he gets?
(49:32):
The good team? What he got? Le him say? Yesterday
on the hot seat, he said a quarterback. Stats are
his record? He was twelve and four? He lost? Did
he losing? Did he losing the playoffs? Did he thought
a pick? We're not talking about Rodgers. That's not bringing
up division about Tom Brady. What happened to fall short time?
(49:55):
Happening time and year and year again. You're bringing up
division up and you bring it, bring it up. Dog
get lost on the hot seat? You want a dog
and lost on the hot seat. That's your that's that's
your seven record, that's your that's your regular seat. Bringing
up a guy who lost, you're quoting more leaving lost
four regular season games. Chris is like Spokespoch for losers,
(50:21):
loses anonymous, the most inconsistent brother of all time. Be consistent,
short menu, stick with it, and anybody can win one.
Stick with it. Those are your mantras. Short menu and
anybody can win one. Who are you telling? I know
what I'm saying. Yeah, But but the problem you're all
(50:41):
over the place and you don't know what you're saying.
You all know what I'm I'm saying. They would the
favorites and every event and think that I'm smart because
I picked the favorites and every pick the win. That's
what you do. Know you have the favorites that top
out every single time I pick and pick the most obvious.
(51:02):
Anybody can do that. Chris Who, I'm the one Toronto Rapp,
You're the word pick Washington Nationals. I'm the one. No,
I'm that guy. You're justice status for who You don't
go out on the lamb, Chris Who, don't do anything special.
You just do the protocol. Let me just play it safe.
(51:26):
Let me pick Golden State every year. You have no
idea what you're talking about. How dare you? I am
the poopoo king Parhington that pick Toronto one. That's what
you are? Your full of poopoo. My chest is stuck out.
I'm so good when it comes to picking these games
(51:49):
on the line. Who picked the winner? Who picked the
Super Bowl champion? Me and I know every time I
wings on it in because I picked the Kansas City Chiefs,
and give me those Super Bowl and that gumm it
they did all that night, Alex, and that you don't
(52:09):
have none where the champ is here. The sneakers I
have on came out of your wallet. That's how good
you are. Those two hundred dollars, George came out of
your wallet. What George are you wearing? You ain't go
no Georga on me, and you'll never have any don't
You ain't good enough to be me in a bet.
The last champion we had to pick was the NFL champion,
(52:34):
and who got it right. I let you have the
regular season. I let you stick out that bird chest
of yours. I let you feel good about yourself because
I felt sorry for you how I had punished you
the year before. And he's talking about all news. Where
can you talk about what's going on now? Silence you.
(52:55):
I rubbed the show with town, with Pat Maholes in
the Chiefs. I am the one who you ran away
with the NFL pick pool to the FBA, and even
with the NBA, you always get it wrong picking the Lakers.
They got the best to bet golden STAPs. I'm talking
(53:16):
about last year. The callers. Let's get to the callers.
A seven seven ninety nine on Fox. A sevens turn
that that whatever? That? Yeah, that's my song, baby, seven
seven ninety nine on Fox. Will the Patriots be better
this year? Not two three, four years from now, this
(53:38):
year without Tim Brady? Put this manness to rest, please
a couple. Fox Sports Radio. Fox Sports Radio has the
best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of

I know what that is, Um, come on, Chris, you
(54:00):
gotta know it. I know, just trying to get the names. Um,
this is uh. I can't believe. I feel like it's
on the tip of my tongue. Get paid. I want
to say a team, but I think that's wrong. Dak
needs to get paid. Oh Dallas, this was that you
go right? That was a great show. You're right. Also
(54:23):
that happen with j J Right. That show had the
whole country captivated, didn't it. Remember when JR JR? Who
shot JR? People were all asking that question. I know
it sounds crazy around the country, right, who shot Jr.
Because it was a big deal. Nobody knew. I thought
I read somewhere that he said he would get spit
(54:47):
on in public because people, you know, hated JR so much,
right Jr. When they saw him in real life, they
would just and you know what they did, if I
remember correctly, Chris, they had had four or five different
people in the show wrote scripts where they shot him,
so nobody really knew which one was really making. Yes,
(55:07):
that's otherwise how the secret? Yeah, because it was a
different time back then though, you know, and it was
a big deal to keep that, you know what I
mean to knock? It was a great Uh, that was
a great show. That was a great show, you right.
All right, This is the odd couple of Christ and

get to the phones. Rob, Are the the Patriots better
(55:51):
this year? Without Tim? Brady. What do you guys think.
Let's say, Robert Enjorgia your first up. You're on the
odd couple of Fox Sports Radio. What you got, man, Chris,
I didn't know you had that love for Tom Brady
like that? Man? Oh yeah, hit a fan boy. I'm
not even a big time Brady fan. I just keep
it real. I don't hate. That's all the dudes. Six
(56:12):
super Bowls. That's all I'm saying. I know I got
you on the Super Bowl. But Tom, I think the
pictures did the right thing because if Tom, like you
said Chris earlier, they you didn't think they would win
the Super Bowl. So I hang on to win. But
the question is next year. I get it down the line.
Next year they're gonna be better with Stidham than they
(56:34):
would have been with Brady. Yes, how many games? How
many games? There you go, Chris, you ain't got a job.
He don't have to justify his answer to you for
how many games they gonna win? Stop it? Thank you.
Robert Carlito in Florida, you're on the odd listen, thank you, buddy.
(56:57):
I think that the Patriots should be better in the
future because half of those games aretained it's basically with
the Raiders at first. But r just keep just keep
paddling him, man, because he picked Dallas all last season,
and then he must have flipped the coin and got
the coin right and then and picked the cheese because
(57:20):
you know it. You know what I was saying Carlo
in the beginning. No, you picked Dallas. You want to
be right, don't call them, go ahead and let him talk.
Just be right. Don't you jump off the bandwagon and
(57:40):
break your legs and then jump on the pick the charge.
I picked the cheese in the beginning. Chiefs Over you
called him out. He picks the most obvious picks anyway,
all right, that Carlito Parkers something No, Max and Georgia.
How many dudes did you text his Max and Georgia?
My man, you're in the odd couple, just playing rob
(58:04):
when the Robs ran his own man, Max, what you got, Junior? Junior?
You're gonna do his own thing? Chris's right, Yeah, I
do it. Let's hear. This is like the quote from Batman.
Either die a hero, you'll live long enough to see
yourself become the villain. Tom Brady could have either retired
the hero, but now he's just long enough to see
himself become the new villain. Let me say this, Tom
(58:25):
Brady was a strong player in New England's no doubt
about it. He fits the system great. Having said that,
I think um his lie. He became a liability. We
looked at the last few years, I mean besides the
last few years. They won the Super Bowl two years ago. Yeah,
and they won kout him a touchdown. It was thirteen
to ten that win the super Bowl with no touchdowns.
(58:49):
Or NFC told you about Brady, stop showed you about Brady.
How awful he is? Marty in Kentucky, you're in the
odd couplets radio Marty, Please, guys, what's up this theme song?
Thursday Fellers playing some good ones too, Marty, Yeah she did.
(59:12):
I just can't believe that Rob called Chris and Tom
Brady let him finish. Rock You must be feeling awful
confident after you was on calling cow Herd to day,
being as you two are the only guys like in
the world that thinks that Carson wins as a top
(59:35):
five quarterbacks. Thank you, Marty, Thank you Rocking Rocky cal
heard also it caused Brady to go, which he is now.
I am in the middle of this argument, because I
do think Brady's great, and I think he can accomplish
us the Tampa Bay. But I do think the New
(59:57):
England will compete for that division title because I just
don't see anybody stepping up and being so far ahead
of them with their defense that they won't be there
competing at the end of a sixteen game season. There
you go, Marty, Thank you very much for the call.
Good said, what's happening to Nick in South Carolina? You're
in the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Nick?
(01:00:20):
What's up? Guys? What's up? Man? Rob? I think you're
gonna be in a be brand muffin. Man. This inconsistency
is too much. Thank you, Thank you man working racking.
He know you you get food of those chumps in Detroit, Rob,
but this is a real caller. Oh wow, thank you.
Look man, I'm not I'm not a huge Tom Brady Sam,
(01:00:41):
but there's no way I can say the paths were
better off without him. Next year, do you guys need
to answer the question we're talking about next year? Yeah?
That would check. Ego is what got in the way.
There's no out of all the major sports NFL is
the only one with the most interesting regular season. If
you've got a record of twelve and four, that means something.
So we gotta give that. We gotta let that carry
(01:01:03):
some weight. So I told you, Nick, last year it
was it was they were the worst eight no team,
go look at who they also told you. I told you.
And then when they had some teams they were bad.
Tom Brady was bad. You watch and see, Nick, We're
gonna record this call. I'm gonna mark this down and
you better call back when the Patriots have a better
(01:01:26):
record than Tom Brady in the box or nott a
call back or in that note in NFL, a pro
quarterback is canceling his own block party. We'll get into
that and so much more in Trolling or rollingd that's next,
But first, be sure to catch live editions of The
Odd Couple with Chris Brussard and Rob Parker week days
(01:01:46):
at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio and the iHeartRadio app. All right, We're coming to
you live from the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios. It's
easy to say fifteen percent of more in your consurance
with Geico. Go to Geico dot com or call eight
hundred and nine four seven auto. The only hard part
figuring out which way is easier. It's time for trolling
(01:02:07):
and rolling with Martin White, Tom Brady, he's done. Aaron
Rodgers did not have a Pro Bowl season. Trying to
get me right. It's trolling or rolling, that's rights troller,
rolland I'm Martin Wison. Then let me break it down
for you. Just skate just the first time you've heard
(01:02:28):
of this illustrating game. If Christ and Rob like the story,
you hear the troll sing I'm a roll. Sound appreciate that,
DJ Alex. If they don't, you hear the troll sound,
oh man, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey hey hey. So
new Colts quarterback Philip Rivers has been playing the position
(01:02:49):
longer than I've had a driver's license, But he says
that someone was a criticism of this play last year
really got to him. He said, quote, Yeah, there was
some bad play, Certainly some throws I want back, and
certainly some very off the mistakes. I am up to
all those, but there was so much good and I
had some throws last year that were probably as good
as I've had my entire career. Rob, are you trolling?
(01:03:10):
Or rolling. Philip Rivers is washed up. Now I am
rolling with it. He is washed up. Did you watch
him last year? Was god awful. It was a horror show.
That team would have been way better without the Philip
Rivers there. He looked like he was a forty nine.
I'm just not buying that. The Coats, they were so
(01:03:32):
confident in him, they gave him a one year contract.
I don't know what they're thinking. They're not going anywhere
with Philip Rivers. I'm trolling it, oh Man, just like
I trolled Rob Parker last year charges going to the
Super Bowl. He threw for forty six hundred yards two
hundred eighty eight yards a game and twenty three touchdowns
(01:03:53):
to twenty picks. Twenty was a lot, but it was
a bad team he was on. Now with a quarterback,
whispered Frank Right, I'm not saying he's gonna like the
world on fire. I think you'll be okay. I'm just
saying he's not terrible. And so that's all I'm saying
from trolling. What a glowing endorsement. He's not gonna light
the world. Heeded his own argument. That's what happens when
(01:04:18):
you're moon walking on everything. You mean, like the Chargers
going to the Super Bowl. No, like the Cowboys going
to the said at least they won eight games. If
they didn't go, do they gonna make the playoffs? All right? Hey, Mark,
we got a thing going today. Me and Cuts are
very agitated. I couldn't hear it. I could't hear it.
I don't have been on the role in the last
few days. Between Stephers you overplayed overpaid gold crotter and today,
(01:04:42):
I mean, you know, I take four team getting a
little bit to everybody. Huh, overpaid globe trotter, that's right,
while the Hayters are getting the Philip Rivers. It sounds
like his draft classmate Ben Roethlisberger is leg had a
little louder. Then Big Ben Twitter comes notorious blocking anyone
who had had anything negative to say, but it got
(01:05:03):
so bad that even some reporters were blocked. It looks
like Big Ben it's finally open opening his mentions back
up for Phi, Chris, are you trolling or rolling with
Big Ben un blocking his haters? I'm rolling with it.
I mean that's what social media is about, the give
and take, the love and the hate. I'm fine with it.
(01:05:25):
Big Ben can take it. He's a big boy, no
pun intended, and uh, I actually like that better. You
know I like that he Uh, he'll give his haters
a chance to say what they want to say. You know,
I'm trolling in oh man. Hey, that's why there's a
block button for a reason. And if anybody comes on
(01:05:46):
my Twitter and they cross me or come out with
some crazy nonsense, they get blocked. And then they go
cry to Chris Bussard, R blood me, not me, re
blooded me? Why did he block? It is more like
he you go, you know you got Chris because I
got a million block I got more block people than
(01:06:08):
I have on my Twitter. Do you know that Rob
Mutombo on the timeline? Huh, that's right, A couple of
Fox Sports Radio. So we know the NBA is coming back,
but everyone has questions about how it's gonna look. There's
significant concerned about how players will adapt to this type
(01:06:29):
of environment. Obviously that's never been a part of before.
How many family members that can bring, the inability to leave.
And finally, apparently if a player gets sick, they could
become replaced by another player, and then the player who
gets sick is in ineligible for the rest of the season. Chris,
he did you say, is it ineligible or he is? No,
(01:06:49):
I don't know. The player who got sick would then
become ineligible for the remainder of the season, according to
Woji's tweet from earlier today. So, Chris, are you trolling
or rolling with that idea? Players if gods get sick.
I'm trolling that. Oh man, hey, hey hey, I'm fine
when you obviously having replacement players. But I don't think
(01:07:13):
the players should be ineligible for the rest of the time.
I think after his quarantine for two weeks, he should
be able to play if his team is still alive.
Let's say Lebron gets it in Game four of the
regular season, gets COVID, and you know, obviously the Lakers
will still play the rest of the regular season, make
the playoffs. Maybe they if they win the first round
without him, You're gonna keep Lebron James out, who's now
(01:07:36):
healthy without Covid out of the second round. That's ridiculous.
So I don't I think they need to rethink that.
I'm rolling with it. Yeah, you gotta be able once
somebody contracts it. I think they need to be removed
from the whole situation because they can get other people infected,
(01:07:59):
and then you're sending them back home. You're sending him
away from Orlando. Then you're gonna ask him to come back.
I think once someone is sent home for being sick, uh,
that should be you should probably stay there and your
season is over. So I totally get it, because the
worst thing you could do is bring him back and
then if you get it again or spreads it to
his teammates, because he would have to stick if he's
(01:08:22):
stuck around. So I think they're just trying to eliminate it.
Once someone comes down with it, they have to be
moved on and have to be eliminated from the bubble.
And that's why I think it makes sense. Man, I
hope a Star didn't get it. I don't. You don't
know as to get it, but you know what I'm saying, Like, no,
I get that you're saying, but I understand. I mean, God, Chris,
(01:08:43):
that was the problem you use Lebrin here example. That's
why Rob trolls it. The qusaid somebody else roll with it. Right,
where are you add on it? Martin? Oh, I'm trolling it.
I mean if I hate it, if you guy gets
sick and he goes to quarantine. But who does he
pass to get the negative test? Right? Come on, I
(01:09:08):
think they're gonna rethink that. That's why Martin is the
model rator and he's not one of the debaters. All right,
just Martin, it's about time to get him back on
the hot seat. He should have healed up from his
last beating. You mean my last victory on the hot seat? That, yeah, perfectly.
In fact, I've been working on a men shape. I'm
ready call me Rocky. Yeah, all right, I saw you
(01:09:29):
on Spectrum one. You ain't in shape. That camera added
another the ten pounds. Oh this lineup? Brother, all right,
thank you. It's our man, Martin Whie rolling. It's our
most controversial segment of the day. Shot Talk is next
couple of Fox Sports Radio. Fox Sports Radio has the
(01:09:54):
best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of
our shows at Fox sports Radio dot com and within
the iHeart Radio app search f s R to listen live.
It's the eye couple of Chris and Rob on the
TV Theme Show Thursday. Was this a request drive? No?
I think it's Alex. That's Alex, sir. Okay, that's such
(01:10:17):
an obvious one, but you know, we'll take it fresh.
Prince of bel Air, My bad, I didn't do a
great beard one. That's a good one. That's a good one.
You can't go wrong with that. All right, it's time
for shop talk. Ain't nobody ain's little been a bomb shop?
Do you know that? Ain't nobody? Ain't you talk about whoever, whatever,
whatever you want to in the ball it's shop talk, Yes, sir,
(01:10:41):
this shop talked to the odd couple of Fox Sports Raider.
We do this every single day at eight forty five
pmster we discussed something that happened outside of the world
of sports. Now, guys, I'm sure you heard about this,
But Gone with the Wind, the movie that came out
with eighty years ago, was back in the news. And
that's because at Stort in the theater, I don't know's
I heard? We know who the old Wind is? On
(01:11:04):
the sid whatever. So it was on the new streaming
service HBO Max, and they decided that they were going
to temporarily pull the movie off its streaming service due
to quote racist depictions. Well, I guess that created a
lot of buzz because in the following days, Gone with
the Wind became top five on iTunes and number one
(01:11:26):
on Amazon for a streamed movie. So here's your question, guys,
do you think HBO Max maybe overreacted in their decision
to pull Gone with the Wind Ahead. Okay, No, I
don't think they overreacted. I do understand. This is not new.
It's not when something's and depending on the time or
(01:11:48):
the circumstance, maybe was was cool or okay at certain times.
Then you take a look at stuff and you decide
that in the present situation and maybe it doesn't fit anymore.
And if somebody really wants to go and watch it
like they did, then you go out and buy it.
(01:12:08):
And you know what, we're all responsible adults. That's why
I'm never into censoring music like rap music and the
lyrics or whatever. Right, it's not on the public airways
and not playing it on the radio where a kid
could just stumble on it, you'd have to go and
be a responsible adult and buy it. So if you
want to see Going with the Win and you want
to see them celebrate slavery and you want to do that,
(01:12:30):
then you buy your copy. It's not like it's been
banned from the country. So I think they did the
right there. I don't have a problem with it. Yeah,
I mean this is not the first time. Remember Rob,
and you not like this show Little Rascals. Absolutely, I
didn't really see. I was a kid. I didn't see
the racism in ite. You know. I thought they they
I thought they acted like Stimey was one of the guys, right,
(01:12:53):
I did too. But they, you know, adults didn't like it,
Black adults. They banned it. I'm with you. I mean,
I don't think you have to get illegal to watch,
you know what I mean, Like you said, if people
want to go watch it, Um, you know, it could
even be you know, I mean, I guess people watching
it like it, but it could be a teachable moment
as well. Um, it's a time of ugly time in
(01:13:16):
our history. But I'm with you, Rob, Like, you don't
have to make put it right there on HBO Max.
But if people want to go buy it, they can.
You haven't destroyed the movie and made it illegal, So
you know that's that's funny. Rob G. Have you watched Tenka?
I mean, have you ever watched Gone with the Ones?
I watched it in college. We watched it in college. Yeah,
(01:13:36):
they made us watch as a class yeah, it was
like a movie class. We watched that one. We watched
Casablanca like some really, which is which is a great
movie called Sablanca. I'm sure you watched The Wizard of
Oz yep, that was one we watched too. That's an
all great movie. I think they overreacted. And here's the
reason why I think. Number one, I think council culture
is stupid. I think I agree with that. I think
(01:13:58):
that this movie has been out for a long, long
long time, So if we really wanted to make this
kind of statement, they could have done it a long
long time ago. And well, but I'll push back, Well,
here was the Confederate flag. Well let me finish this,
rob So if they were going to cancel it or
to remove it, then remove it completely. But what their
statement was is we're going to temporarily remove it. So
(01:14:20):
you're just saying, is you know, what's a little too
hot right now, We're just not going to play it.
But once this dies down, we'll put it back up.
No big deal. So if if you're gonna do it,
you might as well go all the way and do it.
That's that's also I think I get it, Alex, where
you or have you watched the Have you watched Going
with the Woe? Unfortunately, Rob, I have not. I'm usually
one of the guys that tries to stay pretty up
to date with a lot of this stuff too of relevancy.
(01:14:41):
But I can say affirmatively that a lot of things
we have done in our past we thought were correct,
and so as we move forward, we evolve as a
culture and we try to make things not only more equal,
but more fair and more right and just. So in
my opinion, I think it's wrong to destroy all of
our history and to remove stuff, because then how are
we not going to repeat something if we never learned
from our ways and look forward. I would just say
(01:15:03):
that more people now than ever are very scared of
not being that company or that object, or that movie
or that something that didn't do what they could to
make progressive changes in the world today. So I think
a lot of people are scramming to do as they
can and what they can. So I would say, like
going to extremes of old movies maybe is a little
too far fetched, But at the same time, I think
it's like we have to grow as a culture to say, like,
(01:15:25):
look at how it was and people thought this was okay,
and it's to show like we can be better. Just
like you don't see the old Chris step and fetch
it in black face, right, don't yet? Stuff was common
and andy, you know, with the black voice, and you
know what I mean and all that. So so Alex,
(01:15:45):
I hear what you're saying. I'm not talking about you
gotta erase everything some people. But if you go to
these foreign countries where these people have been and someone
well here's a good one. I think the thing is
you can teach like you're talking about people removing Confederate
names on buildings and statues, you can still teach the
history without honoring those people. African American walking around like
(01:16:11):
you know, you taking your kids around sight seeing and
you see all these statues of people that you know
own slaves and stuff and fought to defend it to
oro to keep you slaves. I will say, though I
don't there's a slippery slope we cancel culture because who's
who's determined in what gets canceled? You know what I'm
(01:16:33):
saying that I do not like cancel culture at all,
because that could be that there's a slippery slope with that.
You could say what's saying With Nazi Germany, they still
have concentration camps. You can go visit to see how
this was so big in our history and how we
hope to never do this again. But they don't have
the right agree with They don't wave a swasticker. But
(01:16:57):
I'm saying, you need to have something. You still need
to have something that people can physically touch and see.
Because for example, here when we did the same thing
with h but but a statue way minute, Alex, a
statue is different. That's celebrate that's celebrated. They have slave
quarters and these things. They just still have that. So
we're not taking that away or burningette down. Do you
(01:17:19):
see what I'm saying. I see a point with that?
All right, It's The Eye Couple Chris and Rob one
hour left. Be sure to catch live editions of The
Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker weekdays at
seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
and the iHeartRadio app. It is The Eye Couple. I'm Chris,
He's Rob. We're coming to you live from the Geico
(01:17:41):
Fox Sports Radio Studios. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen
percent of more on your car and shorts. Visit Geico
dot com for a free rate quote. At the bottom
of this hour, we got Yale men's basketball coach James
Jones joining us, So that'll be a lot of fun
and we'll talk about all this stuff that's going on
(01:18:02):
and how it's affecting college athletes and so that should
be interesting. But first, Rob, as we talked about at
the beginning of the show, Pat Mahomes being celebrated for
speaking out, joining his fellow NFL players in calling out
the NFL to address systemic racism, and the commissioner, Roger
(01:18:27):
Goodell did exactly what the players asked for. And then
today it was announced that the NFL will also donate
two hundred and fifty million dollars over the next ten
years to fight systemic racism. So Patrick Mahomes went on
an interview with he did a conference call with several
media members, and he talked about why he chose to
(01:18:49):
speak out here. He is, I've been lucky enough to
grow up with a lot of great role models around
me and just trying to find and listen to them
as they talked to me, and then other people around
the league who I feel like I've done it's the
right way and listen to the advice they give me
and then trying to make the best informed decision. I've
been giving this platform and I want to make sure
that I can do whatever I can to make make
the world a better place and whichever way that is now.
(01:19:12):
Based off what he's saying, Rob and I salute him
for speaking out, but based off what he's saying so far,
I don't expect him necessarily to become his outspoken as
a Lebron James, I don't expect him to become, you know,
that type of social justice warrior if you will, and
I say that in a positive way, but if he does,
(01:19:36):
I think I understand we haven't really seen that in
the NFL. Jim Brown kind of became that post career,
but that doesn't mean it can't happen. And I think
Pat Mahomes is that good. I'm not saying he has
to do anymore than he's speaking out, which is good.
And he's a young kid. He probably only knows so
(01:19:59):
much and he's out this huge platform and he used
it in a positive way. But I think if he
decided to speak out on more issues like Lebron does.
He's so good he can get away with it. I
think if if he had gone, like if Colin Kaepernick
(01:20:19):
had been as good as Pat Mahomes, or even if
Colin Kaepernick was still the player that led to forty
nine ers to the Super Bowl, if they were still
a you know, a contending team, and he was still
viewed as one of the top five or six quarterbacks
in the league, I think he would have been fine kneeling.
I mean, marsh Now they're not quarterbacks, but Marshawn lynchnelt,
(01:20:44):
he's been fine, or he's sitting he actually sits. Who
was sitting during the national anthem? And there's talk that
he could be back again to play Eric read other players. Obviously,
now I know they're not quarterbacks, it's a little different,
but I still think had I actually thought it was
more courageous of Kaepernick to do it when he did it,
(01:21:06):
because he was clearly expendable. I mean, when he started
first started sitting and then kneeling robbed, the Niners could
have cut him then and people wouldn't have I don't
think it would have been a big deal to people
because he just football. He was viewed as done. He
was a second string quarterback. So I thought doing it
(01:21:27):
at that time made it even more courageous than doing
it when he was at the pinnacle of his career.
So I think Mahomes could could be a different type
of player in the NFL and speak out as much
as he wanted, as long as he's as good as
he is, and not saying I expect it, but I
do think he could do it in the NFL. Yeah,
I just don't. And we just had Cliff Avril on it.
(01:21:49):
He talked about the NFL and just just a it's
a different kind of league, and I'm not so sure
that football players have the same impact Lebron Lebron stage.
And obviously the difference between a seventeen year VET and
the guy who's just uh just getting started and started him.
(01:22:10):
So there's a big difference there with with how far
a guy who's still learning himself and learning about himself,
and also his circumstance and situation. Obviously he's a black man,
that's not the issue, but he grew up in a
different circumstance than a lot of people. And I don't
know it may maybe and yeah, but maybe that's why
(01:22:32):
Kaepernick hasn't been the guy who also felt that it
was he wanted to go and be the front of
the line. He did what he thought was right, Chris,
But he never grabbed the bullhorn and stood on top
and tell everybody to follow him. Do you see what
I'm saying. Yeah, I think that's because of his personality.
But I'm just felt like he wasn't idalifyed. I just
(01:22:52):
think that's not what he's about, you know. I'm just
I'm just saying I don't see Patrick Mahomes being in
that guy. I would be surprised if I would, if
that would if that would have come and be the case. Yeah,
I think I think he has no choice. I think
he has no choice. And this is not a rip
on him at all. He has no choice right now
(01:23:14):
with what's going on in the country. He would look
very weird right now, Chris. If he wasn't out there,
if Jackson hasn't spoken. But Lamar Jackson didn't win the
Super Bowl more than the MVP. I'm telling you it
would be he won MVP, though, But I'm saying where
my homes is compared. I just I just think, and
(01:23:34):
I'm not saying that Lamar shouldn't be out there he should,
but I think Patrick Mahomes it would look weird for
him to not be there. He's certainly bigger than lamar Um.
But I think what it is is I assume they
asked him right to be in the video. Michael Thomas
put it together and probably asked him, and he was
(01:23:57):
willing to do it. I mean, I don't know if
they asked lamar or not. But I agree with you
and that it would look bad if he turned it
down considering what's going on, if he turned it down
and if that got out, if that got out too that, oh,
if he was inviting, it would be bad for him.
Am I right? Right? I agree with you on that.
(01:24:17):
My only dis I agree with you as well, and
that I don't expect Mahomes to become like a Lebron James.
Where we differ is that I think, like I think
you believe, he just the NFL won't tolerate a player
like that. Is that saying that? I just know? I
just think that that's not the wake football players or
(01:24:40):
conditioned and that's why they didn't follow Kaepernick. That it's
more of the team thing. And and Cliff Averywell talked
about it a little bit uh, and he was talking
about from the league standpoint. But I think football players
are different, I really do. I don't think Lebron's an individual.
Guy was a part of a team, and a basketball
(01:25:00):
team two or three stars, big time players who really
move everything and make everything happen. Football is a little different,
and guys feel more part of the group. So I
don't know if guys are automatically willing to stand out
and do their own thing. That's just the way I
read football players. Yeah, I don't expect him to do it,
but I just don't think it's got anything to do
(01:25:21):
with the sport. I think it's just we haven't had
a football player that I can really recall being that outspoken.
If Mahomes did it, I think he's too good for
them to do anything. And they really haven't been a
lot of bad right, so there haven't been a lot
of basketball players either, to be honest, Kareem obviously changed
his name. He spoke out somewhat. Bill Russell spoke out,
(01:25:47):
you know, but Kareem was more aloof um during his
playing career, and then it really robbed there. Oscar Robertson
was obviously strong and you know, got the players and
did stuff for the union. Isaiah time. It's also very
strong as far as getting stuff done for the players
union and making things better for them. But we haven't
even seen a ton of NBA players, you know, before
(01:26:09):
Lebron come out and speak. But it's interesting and I'm
glad he's done what he's done. He's a young kid.
He's probably learning right like like a lot of people
right now, and so we'll see where he goes from
there in that regard. Another interesting thing, Rob and we
go to the world of the NBA. James Harden. I've
(01:26:29):
been debating, you know, our colleague Nick Wright. We've had
him on the show. We've been debating many mornings on
first things First, he seems to think that the Houston
Rockets and James Harden have some great chance to win
the NBA fan I guess I'm overstating it, but he
gives them a better chance than I do. I don't
(01:26:49):
give him much of a chance at all. They're gonna
make one of the LA teams in the second round.
I think they go home. I'm not holding that against
James Harden. I don't know. He's an all time great.
He's clearly a Hall of Famer. He's one of the
best we've ever seen and he but I don't expect
him to win the championship this year. I'll give him
(01:27:11):
a chance down the road. He's still only thirty years old,
but I don't expect him to win it this year,
and I'm not gonna hold that against him. Darryl Moorey, however,
the GM for the Houston Rockets, has said he's the
reason that Harden doesn't have a championship, not Harden himself.
Rod g Reid Darryl Moorey's quote, that's right. Darryl Moorey
(01:27:32):
was on the Pomp podcast earlier this week, and here's
what he said in quote, We've worked together for eight
or nine years now, and I couldn't have a better
partner to try and win a title with. And in fact,
most days that wake up saying I've let him down
because I haven't gotten him the right players to win
a title. Where are you at on that run? I
(01:27:53):
totally disagree. I think that he's gone out. He's brought
all kinds of players, he's changed up the mix, bought
people in and out. Chris made some bold moves to
try to change up You know, you don't want to
be the definition of insanity doing the same thing every year,
right and expecting a different result. So I give more
darl Moorey credit for that. And James Harden has just
(01:28:16):
failed way too much in the postseason. There's no other
way around it. They've been in position, and he's had
the clunkers and the bad games and and you know,
a part of a team that missed what did they miss?
Nineteen threes and a runny twenty It was either twenty
seven in a row. I mean that if they made
(01:28:38):
Chris ten of those, you know what I mean, it
could have changed everything. So so I think Daryl Morey's
being very uh nice in saying that and putting the
onus on him rather than on James Harden. But I'm
not buying it. I'm with you. Look, and I've been
critical of Darryl Moorey. Now he's a very he's a
very good he's a good gym. But I have been
(01:29:02):
right right exactly this. The genius reputation is what I've
taken issue with. But at the same time, right he
went out because he hadn't delivered the championship, but he
went out and got there. He teamed hardened with Dwight Howard,
and they asked some pretty good role players around him,
Josh Smith and some others. Patrick Beverley was there, remember,
(01:29:22):
Then he teamed him up with Chris Paul. Then he
teamed him up with Russell Westbrook, which while they might
not be the best fit, it's still a lot of
talent and they've got good role players. So to your point, Rob,
he's put him with good players. And let's not forget
in twenty eighteen they had Golden State. I don't know.
(01:29:44):
I still think Golden State was gonna come back and
win that series, but we don't know they were. Houston
was up three two in the conference finals and they
had the home court and Chris Paul gets hurt and
that was it. They lost. But you mentioned summer Harden's
you know, struggles. I don't think he's like I don't
(01:30:05):
think his playoff career should be defined by his family.
I'm not saying that, but Christian, just let me just
say this real quick. Even when Kevin Durant got hurt,
Charles Barkley went on the air and said series is over.
Do you remember that? Yeah? Yeah? And but he did No,
he did I'm just saying, but but that people were like, oh, okay,
they'll they'll get by him. No, no, Durant, Oh my god,
(01:30:27):
you know what I mean. And then they had Game
six at home, lost and were knocked out if you remember, yea,
and they could have won game five, yep, and they
you know, because that's when Durant got hurt and they
should have won that one and they didn't. And then,
like you said, they lost game six, and obviously you
remember twenty seventeen against San Antonio. Game six, Harden doesn't
(01:30:49):
play well at all, two for ten I think, six turnovers,
ten points. He had the twelve turnover game I believe
against Golden State in the in the playoff was so yeah,
he's had his struggles. He's also had some huge games
and individually he was very good last year when they
lost that series the Golden State. But still the point
(01:31:11):
is to win, and so I think there are a
lot of people responsible for why Houston in this era
has not gotten the championship. But if you had to
put it mostly on when you do it on the
players right there on the court, you gotta get it done.
You got some another superstar on your side, and they
just and they've been in position rob and they just
(01:31:33):
haven't been able to get it done. So I would
put the blame or hard do you get in much
of a chance this year? I give a chance, but
a small one temper, you know what I mean. Nothing,
they got talent, but yeah, and who knows McKey, We
just talked about it. If God forbid Lebron or Kawai
(01:31:54):
get COVID or something, Chris, you know what I mean. Yeah,
But right now, Houston's the sixty. This is interesting because
they lost four of their last five and when they
went to small ball in a good one of the
good things out of that rode was they became less
hardened centric, so it wasn't just James Harden dribbling all
(01:32:15):
the time and creating everything. It became more of a
partnership with Harden and Westbrook. But Harden's played that way
for what forty five years now, where he's dominated everything.
And over their last five games, you know, kind of
since they went small, not totally since they went small,
but the last five games they probably played eleven games
(01:32:38):
going small something like that. He was shooting thirty seven
percent from the floor, twenty five percent from three and
his scoring was down. It was still high, but it
was down from what it had been the past few seasons.
So he's got to adjust. You know, he's gonna have
to adjust, just like Westbrook had to adjust to playing
off the ball with hardened Harden's got to adjust now
(01:33:01):
to playing off the ball more than he's used to.
So that's why I think you know they're they're going
to I don't think they can beat the Lakers or
the Clippers. They got a puncher's chance, as you said,
but I certainly don't expect that if all teams are healthy,
I'd be shocked. All right, let's throw it out to you, guys,
eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox A seven seven
(01:33:21):
nine ninety six sixty three sixty nine. How much blame
does James Harden deserve for the Houston Rockets recent history
of playoff failures or what do you think they'll do
in the postseason. We'll continue the conversation with you. Next
is Chris and Rob the I Couple Fox Sports Radio.

Who sings this song? Who is this Singob square Pants?
Is that? Who sings it? SpongeBob square Pe, SpongeBob Square Path,
(01:34:05):
SpongeBob Square Path, SpongeBob Square Punch, SpongeBob Square Patch. We
have a we have a guest from Yale coming on.
And that's how you guys welcome me. Yes, sorry, I'll
enjoy it. Who sang that song? Rob? I don't know.
(01:34:27):
I don't know whose voice that is. Whoever it is,
let's keep it that way. Whoever it is, I don't
care who it is. SpongeBob Square Pets. Great TV thing
in my life. Your daughters didn't watch that? No, I
mean they may have, but I didn't. You didn't watch it.
I did see many of the cartoons with him Doherty
Explorer and Teletubbies and junk like that. All right, We're
(01:34:51):
the Oye couple coming you live from the Geico Fox
Sports Radio studios. It's easy to say fifteen percent of

The only hard part, it's figuring out which way as
easier as I said, We've got the men's basketball coach
from Yale University, James Jones, and James welcome to the show.
(01:35:13):
Let me explain every Thursday. He's not here yet. Okay,
we got good balls six thirty five, So yeah, we
got calls. Chris, Oh man, I'm I'm way ahead. I'm sorry.
I'm just like what I was like sitting here, like
I missed something. I'm like, what time I got my
(01:35:34):
rundown mixed up? Let's get the calls. Let's go Craig
in Houston. You're on the high couple of Fox Sports Radio. Craig,
how you doing? You guys? Do it? Man? What's up? Good?
Thanks for bringing us bag, Rob, I said me every
time it comes to Rockets and basketball, Chris, you you
you do us like this? Man, you want to go
to the guests. You don't want to talk about James Harden.
(01:35:55):
You put that, you put the ass rich By Championships. Chris, baby,
come all, well, I know I am a getting rocking
back me up. I'm against asterisk. We just did a
hypothetical if you absolutely had to pick one. But because
I did pick the Rockets, go ahead, but more Y, Yeah,
Derren Moore Ray is exactly right, man, I'm a bar
(01:36:17):
one of Robs Lions. He is pooh pooed on this
man's career. So yeah, if he if he doesn't put
I mean Dwhite Hoyward. That was no help at all.
You know, he brought CPP was the best best big
man in the league at that point. Yeah, well come on,
he was good Lakers. Yeah, that was a huge that. Yeah,
(01:36:42):
but it didn't work. It didn't work, you know. And
then so we get CP three, That was probably the
best shot we had. But then TP three, we knew
his history when we brought him in, and we knew
what was probably gonna happen. He went down, you know,
at a key moment. And after he went down, who
else did we have? You we probably didn't have another
guy that could start on another NBA team, And we're
(01:37:03):
trying to knock off what most people say was the
best team of this generation. But year after year, for
about three years in a row, the only people in
the West that were giving a shot of beating Golden
State was Hardened and Coppell Capella hold one is a
good center. It's it's the lag has changed right, Rob,
(01:37:23):
I mean, come on, he's he's legit. Like he's not
a superstar star even, but he's legit. PJ. Tucker's legit.
Like I said, they had Pat Beth, I get it,
But I'm just you know, I think, uh, you gotta
look at Hardened. All right, let's go to the capitol
of Major League Baseball, Pat in Saint Louis. You're on
(01:37:45):
the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Pat? Yeah,
thanks for taking my call. Yeah, I think it's time
that we start making these players. Now I'm a Lebron
James fan, it's time to start making these players accountable.
Because you know as well as I do, it's James
was in the game six and seven, and he would
not have finished it out. We would deroy that man forever.
(01:38:07):
So yeah, I do think James Harden should be accountable.
I think he's had As Rob said, it's not you know, Lebron,
There's been guys that's got bad games in the postseason,
but he has completely fallen aparty games when it's counted.
That's my problem. In part two of the question is
can they win this year? Now? Everybody was talking about
(01:38:27):
Lebron the e season the West, there's only one team.
Seth's betan Lebron. The seven games series four times, right,
you gotta win four out of seven. Yeah, it's Golden State.
So I'm gonna tell you right now, the man's in
the West. Be careful what you wish for, because you
got it. He's there and I don't. So you got
the Lakers winning it. I got the Lakers. But the
Clippers do scare the living hell out. I mean it's
(01:38:48):
not because of George and Kawahi. I'm gonna tell you.
Those two boys off the bitch scare me. Harold and
Louisa and I have picked the Clippers, but I think
you'll have met this rob. These are really two evenly
matched teams. I don't think great. I think the Clippers
are deeper. I agree, that's all. I just think they're deeper.
(01:39:09):
I think they're a little hungry too. As I know
Lebron is hungry. But I think, oh that one through twelve,
the Clippers even hungry, no doubt. Marcus in California, you're
in the couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Marcus? Hey,
what's up about you guys? Doing doing good? How are
you good? Good? Good? First of all, everybody knows the
Clippers have the best team man for men. But the thing,
(01:39:34):
but the thing with James Harden is I think it's
unfair because the best team it's supposed to win a
championship and James Harden has never had the best team. Okay,
now wait a minute. They beat Marcus when the Pistons
beat the Lakers in two thousand and four, who had
the best team on paper? Right? The Lakers? All right? Joy,
(01:39:58):
So you can win without being the best team, you can.
But like Jordan never did. No, But I'm just saying
Ken George never did. Jordan has never beat a team
that he was supposed to lose to. I mean Jordan.
I mean when Jordan won, his teams were always the best.
If you take a pole and you say he the
best team, everybody was say because of him? Stop it?
(01:40:21):
What they do? You know, none of those guys, Pipping
went elsewhere and you couldn't get a team. He didn't
want anything. And hard scram went to Orlando, not right,
because they didn't get somebody to replace him. When Jordan left,
he just left. Nobody else went to Portland. When Pipping
went to Houston, he was on talented squads and he
(01:40:43):
ord without pipping Geordan. He became the best player in
the world without pipping. Stop it. Yeah, Jordan wasn't the
best player in the world without Scottie pipping. No, he
was getting swept. We don't give credit for people who
getting slip. Guys, we don't care. How could you a career?
He got wet swept two, Lebron got swept to Broga
(01:41:04):
sweb Lebron. Whoever got swept? Kareem got swept, Magic and
Kareem got swept. That's what happens early on, right, come
on and know some of those guys got swept in
their primes. You know, all right, we got a I
was ahead of myself. We got the yales Men basketball
coach James Jones coming up. Be sure to catch live
(01:41:26):
editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob
Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app. It's The
Eye Couple coming you live from the Geico Fox Sports
Radio studios. It's easy to say fifteen percent of more
in your car. Shooters with Geico. Go to Geico dot
com or call eight hundred nine four seven auto. The
(01:41:47):
only hard part is figuring out which way is easier.
He's the Yale men's basketball coach, James Jones. Welcome to
the Eye Couple. What's happen? How you guys doing. We
are great, Thank you for joining us. And you, obviously,
I mean you work with young men and this is
(01:42:08):
a much a very powerful time in our country right now,
a lot of change going on. Are you, even though
you guys obviously are out of season, are you like
doing maybe zoom calls or have you been able to
talk to your players about what's going on? And if so,
what what what are their reactions to all this? Well? Well, certainly,
(01:42:31):
you know that's what we do as coaches, your teachers
and mentors to young men, and that's why we get
into this business. And you know, our guys are not
on campus, and if it wasn't for the virus, they
still wouldn't be. Our guys go home for the summer
and they train on our own, they come back, we
get it back together. But we've had a numerous a
number of zoom calls with them at individual phone conversations
(01:42:53):
with them. You know, some of them are struggling through
trying to understand why the world is the way it
is or why our country is the way it is
and trying to find that place. And then their voice
and at all and um, you know, they stepped up
and they tried to use their platform to try to
invoke change around the country. And UM, you know you
(01:43:14):
would think that guys that yelled their leaders up tomorrow
and they're going to do all they can and trying
to secure the future for themselves and for their offspring. James,
where's the responsibility, uh, for some of these coaches at
these major programs who have not talked about this publicly,
and maybe they've talked to their players, But is their
(01:43:36):
responsibility as well, uh, to make a public statement and
let people know where you stand on these very serious
issues of the day. Well, I think we all have
a responsibility, right. I think this is all of us,
um in in terms of you know, a lot of
these major coaches, I think that their voice obviously would
(01:43:57):
be heard and resounded un and people would pay attention
to who they are because of their stature and what
they've been able to accomplish. But we all have a
responsibility to try to learn that you can't and try
to do better, but certainly, you know, those people in
power that people are going to listen to for change
and have a platform, should be speaking up because you know,
(01:44:18):
you look at college basketball and a number of the
percentage of African American men that play the sport is overwhelming,
just like college football, and you would expect them to
step up and be heard so we can have change
in this country. James, how far I mean you mentioned
college basketball and the players obviously on the court. On
(01:44:38):
the court, it's fine, it seems like a real meritocracy.
But on the bench as far as coaches and head
coaches in particular in the athletic departments, how much further
do we have to go in that regard as far
as racism, because you know a lot of people just
look at the court and they see a lot of
(01:44:58):
black players and they think, oh, everything's fine. But it's
whether it's Division one college basketball, football, the NFL, the NBA,
even at times Major League Baseball, it seems like that
meritocracy hasn't really reached the benches and the front offices. Well,
no question, all you have to do is look at
(01:45:18):
the numbers, right, they'll tell you that they'll bail out
what it is that's going on in this country. Like
you look at the NFL is a great example. Seventy
percent of the players that play the game, or African
American sixty eight anyway, right, percentage of the play African Americans.
I think the percentage of head coaches around thirteen percent.
Why is that? You look at college basketball, like you know,
(01:45:40):
Jalan Howood, if he wasn't hired last summer, I bline,
didn't you try to make it in pros there wouldn't
be a black coach in a big Ken, which is outrageous, outrageous,
so so so you look at it around the country.
Is just it's the way it happened. I'm on a
call today with all the IDY League coaches, men and women,
and we're trying to discuss, you know, what we're going
(01:46:02):
to do. And this is a point I wanted to
make about the coaches making a statement. It's beyond a statement. Um,
it's a plan of action. What actions are you going
to take? They get about a statement. Everybody's put out
a statement and to the point, so what does it mean? Okay,
so so we know how you feel, right or we
know how you're thinking about the statement. But unless you
have a plan of action of what you're going to do,
(01:46:24):
it doesn't matter. Anybody can put out a statement, whether
it be harsh or inflammatory or powerful, it doesn't matter
unless you have some form of action. And you know,
so I'm on this call and with all the coaches
and the league men and women, and they're two brown faces, right,
they're twenty of us. There's twenty of us on a
callment they're two brown faces. So it's one of those
(01:46:45):
things that you know, unless it changes there. So the
African American men and women that we have on our programs, well,
who they have, they're aspired to. They are are the
head coaches that they have to aspire to other than
my program and in one other program in the league,
both for men and women. So that's not right. So
(01:47:06):
like so you answer your question, No, it's not a meritocracies.
It's not equal for everybody, and it is the way
it is, and that needs to change to help things
change within our communities. And you know you've been through this.
I'm sure like all the presidents at the universities are
white and all the athlete directors are right for the
most part and the people who want to search from
their white and it's not so much that they are
(01:47:28):
racist in a sense of how they act um socially
or whatever, but in terms of who they are. They
take care of each other and they know that they
they they do what's comfortable, and that's part of the problem.
And like, and it's uncomfortable for them to hire somebody
in some in a lot of cases, the people that
don't look like they do. James Uh today at so
(01:47:52):
on Instagram. Four star guard Nate Tabor has committed to
HBCU Norfolk State, and then there have been a couple
other guys, right, Chris, recently we have who was it
on our show? Was his name? Young U Tracy Young
Youngoming from Wyoming, right to exactly, So, when you see
(01:48:17):
this happening and guys deciding that they're going to play
at historically black colleges and universities, what do you make
of that? This this ship? I think it's powerful. And Uh,
you know, I was on on this call today and
Tommy America at Harvard. You know, he brought his team
to play Howard on Marca Luther King Day. We did
the same thing this past year. We took our Yale
(01:48:39):
Bulldogs to play Howard on Martin Luther King Day. We
took our young men by the statue um and we
you know, we just had some history and some understanding
of what went on. And for my guys to be
on the campus, it was a tremendous experience for both teams. Um,
you know, we have a lot of people in the
DC area, so it was great. It was a great
crowd of Monday afternoon. I had friends from high school
(01:49:01):
that lived in an area that came to it. But
the power of playing basketball on a historically black college
was tremendous for my entire team, both black and white.
And we talked about doing more of that because of
blending the universities, blending the IVY leagues and historically black
(01:49:21):
colleges together to have relationships. Um, that's a good thing
for everybody. Um, So when a young man chooses to
go to historically black college and play for a black coach,
I mean, I think that's a really good thing for
those programs and they're bringing more interest and and and
play at a higher level. And that's that's tremendous. I
(01:49:42):
feel good about us. James. Last thing, what have you
heard like, how are your white players? Because it looks
like your team. I looked at the team photo. It's
pretty well mixed racially. How have your white players responds
to all that's going on? Well, you know, again, my
guys are tremendous people. And I'm very fortunate to coach
(01:50:04):
at Yale because of the kids that I have and
the character that they have. And I'm not saying that
they don't have character and other places. I'm not in
other places. I'm at Yale, but I know we have
tremendous kids and they have all stepped up to rally
behind their black brother. Um. You know, they know what's
going on, they know what time it is, they care
about the guys that are that are involved with them.
(01:50:24):
And we talk all the time about Yale basketball being
a family and those are roads. You know that That's
that's real. Man. These dudes are part of your family.
You're not. You may not like everybody. You may not
like everybody you're in your actual family. I don't know
if you, Chris, you like all your cousins most but
not all. James I ain't might grab sometimes James you
might not like for you doing a radio show with
(01:50:46):
every day so so so so again, but we all
have to get along. And at the end of the day,
just like listen, I might kick my brother's but every day,
but nobody on the street's going to kick his butt.
And and and the guys in our program, that's the
way they're still about their teammates. Those are my boys.
That's my guy, like you know. And the one thing
(01:51:09):
that they're three truths and as a as a college coach,
but one of them is that the players are always
going to be more uh connected with each other than
they are to the coaching staff. Right, So they're always
going to be really connected because they go to war together.
They're the ones running sprints, they're the ones doing all
the hard work the other ones lift them. So of
(01:51:30):
course they're going to be together. And that's how we blend.
That's the culture of my program. So and answer to
your question, Um, the white guys and black guys on
our program alike, look at what's going on in the country.
They're distressed, they can't understand it. Um, they feel bad
about it, and they're disappointed at my generation and my parents'
(01:51:51):
generation for not making their lives better. Great stuff, James Man,
We think that that was terrific stuff. That's the luck
to you at Yeah. I used to tell my friends
when I was in college that I went to college
in New Haven and they'd always say, oh, that's awesome.
Did you go to Yale? And I say, no, Southern Connecticut. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
(01:52:14):
Like like I was like to pull that all the time,
Like Harvard. They always tell you, yeah, I went I
went to school in Cambridge, right, yeah, yeah, I went
to Harvard. Right, but yeah, but you but you have
to go the way huh. That's right, Southern Connecticut. I
love my school, all right, James, thanks, we appreciate it,
all right. Brothers, you gotta be good. Thank you you too.
(01:52:37):
A couple of Fox Sports Radio keep it locked. Fox

song ended on Yeah I just got that mellow yeah
(01:52:58):
yeah yeah yeah, bringing us down we go here you
go boom boom boom, boom boom. Sometimes you want to
go where everybody knows your name. Rob Parker, that's right,
and you're always glad you can't sing sing on tune.
(01:53:18):
I love this song though this is a this is
one of the great TV theme songs, no doubt, Alex,
what a great job on this TV theme song Thursday
here on the of course sports radio him the whole list.
I did not did he give you this, Alex? Not
the last three raw Man? Yeah? Really, SpongeBob was alexsh friends.
(01:53:39):
I wasn't really feeling the SpongeBob because you're a great beard.
You did well. I want yes, I want you unless
you die. You have a great beard, Parker, why you
monably have a great but mine not died? I'm natural shots.
First of all, what's wrong with dying your heir? Nothing?
(01:53:59):
Who's that's I heard? Just for men? Might become a
show sponsor specifically because of Grizel because they could they
could see Chris's died hair on the radio, right people.
You know how many people tell me I can't believe
how old you are, like forty or thirty six or
something like that. You know what, because you're five foot four,
(01:54:22):
so you're like five TI being the dunk just so
n I have you gott you have all that makeup
on it? And then your hair is not your natural color,
so that's no. This is this is all. One of
the ad exec said, the best part about this show
is you can hear the died dripping into the microphone.
Is nice. Oh oh, I need to call Lilian Lilian
(01:54:47):
online too, Lilian humor, the husky jokes. You know what,
I just know Rob is really good at instigating between everybody,
and no one ever gets him about. It's the Eye tomorrow, alright, already,
quick week, quick week, they all been going fast. How
(01:55:10):
much time we got so I know how to how
to close this bad boy out in style. It's the
Eye Couple, Chris and Rob. We hope you enjoyed the
last three hours. We certainly did. Of course, we'll be
back tomorrow, same time, Peece
