It's The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker! Los Angeles radio host Fred Roggin is in for Chris, and the guys debate whether or not the Big Ten conference is secretly hoping that the SEC, ACC and Big 12 fail in their efforts to play football this Fall to make themselves look better for canceling the season, and tell us the real reason why Chris Paul-led teams have historically struggled in the playoffs. Plus, NBA champion Dahntay Jones swings by to explain why he thinks the Clippers' lack of chemistry is the reason why they're struggling so much in their first round series against the Mavs.

The Odd Couple on Fox Sports Radio. The Odd part
of the Odd Couple. Rob Parker is here. Award winning
national sportswriter, all around good human being and at times
a bit cranky. Yes, that's me. Yes, I'm Fred Rogan
from NBC in Los Angeles at a five seventy LA
sports here in the western part of the United States. Rob,

(01:05):
it's great to be here. It's a pleasure to fill
in for Chris Brusariti is vacationing. He will be back Monday.
And I was talking to a few of your listeners
during the break and they indicated to me Chris is
coming back Monday. Yes, thank god? Oh wow, thank I
don't think so not at all. Fred. Always great to
have you jump in with us. So while yeah, well

(01:25):
we got two hours left, keep it locked. It's a
funky flashback Friday. You hear Alex digging in the crates
with some great music, so we'll keep that going. But
the Fred, let's go to college football. What do you got? Yeah?
Hour one we did talk about Anthony Davis and the
Lakers and his impact and Lebron's comments about the kind
of teammate that Ad is. Now let's get to college football,

(01:47):
and I think we can both agree that the NCAA
has done a very poor job of trying to keep
things together. They have for years, and this college football
situation in the pandemic has made it even worse. We
know the Big ten and twelve are not going to play.
We know the Big twelve, the ACC and the SEC
are going to play. And today Big ten families have

(02:09):
had enough. They've had enough. They think it's unjust and
unfair that their kids will not play in the Big
ten and other kids will play around the country. So
they've had it. And by the way, the Big Ten
rob did come out and say, we understand that you've
started a petition. We know you are protesting, but we're
sticking by our guns. So today all bets were off.

(02:31):
They had a protest. How many people must have been thousands?
What an outrage? Let me see Division two and three
footballs canceled, but there must have been millions of people
out there in front of the Big ten office right
up with picket signs and protesting and telling Kevin Warren
to go to you know where, the Big ten commissioner

(02:53):
and all that they should and telling those chancellors, how
dare you just deprived my children, my kid of playing
football when everybody else is playing? Right? Is that what
they said? Yes? Rob, And they had throngs of people.
You know, they did not have to call security, They
did not have to block off areas. I mean they

(03:14):
had at least twenty five people. Twenty five people. At
least Lebron had three thousand when they were given out
three pizzas in La Do you remember that? Yeah? And
Lebron never showed Rob. Oh yeah, and neither did the
mass hysteria for not having college football on a Division

(03:34):
one level during a pandemic. Friend, Look, I get it,
by the way, I get the outrage of the Big ten.
I get the outrage of families in the Pac twelve.
In full disclosure, I have a son that's a college
basketball player. Now he plays Division three college basketball, but
he did play it. He was playing at where he
was playing out at Redlands and he's transferred to Chapman.

(03:56):
But he wasn't Division one guy who was at Arizona State, right,
I was gonna say, yep. So he sat on the
bench and looked watch Bobby Hurley, yellowy. That's okay. He
was on the team. He was on the team absolutely,
and now he plays and he's pretty good. So he
is dealing with this kind of thing. I get robbed.
The outrage of parents, I get the outrage of kids.

(04:17):
And I get it because other conferences are playing it
doesn't make any sense they're playing we're not. It's unfair
to us. I absolutely get that. But what you're seeing
in college football right now, it's a crapshoot. Let's say
we're in Vegas, we're socially distanced, we have our gloves

(04:39):
and our masks. Yep, we're playing craps. Okay, here's what
we've got. I've got the dice and I'm gonna throw it.
And I'm the PAC twelve and Big ten and I
got the dice and I'm gonna throw it. What's going
to happen? Am I going to hit the point and win?
Or am I gonna crap out? I'm gonna crap out?

(05:00):
If those other three conferences actually play, I'm gonna crap out.
I'm gonna look bad. Am I gonna win? Here's how
I'm gonna win. The other three either don't play or
stop in the middle. If that happens, then the PAC
twelve and the Big ten win. But if they power

(05:21):
through it, if the SEC says we are going for it,
because in Alabama and Louisiana, no virus is going to
get us, We're going right through it. If they power through,
the Big ten and Pac twelve crapped out, and those
kids have a reason to be upset, Rob, I could

(05:42):
not disagree with you more from the standpoint they stopped
the NCAA basketball tournament. Fred. All the sports have been
canceled all over The Olympics have been canceled. We could
go on and on and on about all the sports
that have been canceled. The Big Ten and the PAC
twelve will be on the right side of history. And

(06:03):
God forbid. I'm not wishing for anything bad to happen
to these other conferences. But we just saw what happened
at North Carolina. They invited all the students back. We're
having classes on campus. Fred. Where are they now after
five days? Where the kids? Fred? And they on campus?
Or did they send them home? They send them home?
Why they send them home because there was an outbreak?

(06:26):
Right you know why? Rob? Because they're kids and kids
aren't going to listen. There you go, but there you go.
You just said it. Yeah, but wait a minute, Rob.
If you're an SEC school or a Big twelve school
and my other son Josh goes to Kansas State, Okay,
so they're playing, those players could be put into a bubble.

(06:48):
They could be isolated. Now granted, you can say where
they're not really going to be kids in college because
on the weekend they're not going out and they're not
partying and they're not hanging out. Okay, but they're there
to learn and play football as well. They can be isolated.
They can be in a bubble, and those schools do
have the money to test them. I would argue to you,

(07:09):
I wouldn't. I wouldn't trust tests administered by the schools. Fred,
who have money. I'm telling you to have money, because
we've already seen some players, Fred who've tweeted out that
they tested positive and it wasn't reported by the schools.
So I haven't seen that Rob g who was who

(07:29):
was the player? Rob will find it and tell them
he went against the school and said that he tested
positive and some other guys had and they didn't report it.
And from my only point is Florida State, Fred. And
when there's money involved, that's scary. When people are starting
to fudge the numbers because they don't want to be

(07:50):
proven wrong. They don't want people to know why. And
I'm just saying, and anything where you ask kids to
sign waivers and whatnot and and and drop the schools
from liability tells you that it's not safe and that
they can't keep you safe. It's just like when when
kids get a concussion and the doctor tells you you

(08:11):
can't go back in and they take your helmet from you, Fred,
because you're a kid and you don't want to look
like a woosie and you want to get back in there,
and you don't want to get knocked out of the game,
and they gotta make you not play right because they're
looking out for your well being. The Big Ten and
the Pac twelve. No matter what happens, Fred will wind

(08:32):
up on the right side of history that they didn't
compromise the kids health to make about a buck to
turn a buck, because that's really what it is. You
can't tell me it's the right decision. When the when
when we didn't hear peep out of any parents or
anybody when Division two and three was canceled? When when
if you remember the Big Ten, the Big East Basketball

(08:55):
tournament was going on, they canceled the game at halftime. Fred,
do you remember that? Yes, but that was different print then, Rob,
because you just found out about it. And the reason
you're not hearing a peep out of a Division two
or a Division three and my son goes to Division three.
I don't know why I can people all on Wane.
Nobody cares. I can peeple all on wante Division two.
I Daddy get a lot of sympathy because it's about money. Well,

(09:19):
it's also Rob about giving kids an opportunity. Look, every
kid that plays college football, every kid that plays. What
percentage of those kids are going to go to the NFL?
Two percentage? Right, So that means ninety nine percent of
the kids aren't playing because they want to play football,
because playing at the college level means something. If you

(09:40):
wait and you played college football, that's a pretty cool thing.
Or college basketball if you're a college A yeah. But
but we're all going through this, we're all. Everybody's been altered.
People went four years to some prestigious school, didn't have
a graduation friend. Everybody's been affected by it. People were
very hard to get to the Olympics. Are they going
to the Olympics this year? No? You think all that

(10:04):
work and energy put in and to try to represent
your country, washed down, washed away by the pandemic, washed
away by the coronavirus. Those college football players are no different.
They don't have a birthright that they have to play
football this season. When everybody else's had this sacrifice and

(10:25):
had their lives altered, who are they? Fred? No, I
hate to tell you. People want to return to some
sort of normalcy. You're tired of sitting in your condo
and staring at the walls. The walls are now staring
back at you you want some normalcy, people want it.

(10:46):
The NBA bubble words. Major League Baseball is working as
effectively as it can, but it is working. The National
Hockey League bubble words. The MLS works. But you're the
only problem. But you're sitting here and telling me that
the Pac twelve and the Big Ten are be on
the right side of history. You might be right, but

(11:08):
what I'm saying is this, they may be on the
wrong side of history if those other three conferences play. Listen,
rob If those other three conferences play, that's gonna be
college football. So these kids in the Pac twelve and
the Big Ten, if they're gonna play in the spring,
It's like, what are you doing? Fred? Is those schools
those schools no matter what, and once they once this

(11:31):
is over and we get back to it, Michigan's not
gonna miss a beat. Nobody is. And this is the
other part on why college players need to unionize and
have representation. They're not amateur athletes, they're employees of the school. Fred,
how can you have schools these schools where nobody, no
kids are on campus at North Carolina except the football

(11:53):
team that that you're a part of the student body.
If no students are allowed on campus, then the football
teams shouldn't be on campus. What It doesn't make any
sense to me. It's a contradiction of terms. Are they
members of the student body or not? Are they They're
supposed to be right, So how in the world could
you still have them on campus. I teach at USC,

(12:17):
no classes on campus, no football, if that makes sense
to me, So USC ain't doing anything. That's where I
would scratch my head down the road and say, oh,
I can't believe you didn't have football this year. None
of the kids went to school, but I can't believe
you didn't have football. How How can you have football
when the kids can't go to college? So they should
not play football. At Kansas State, where Josh goes, the

(12:38):
kids are on campus. They should not play football there.
The kids are on campus. I'm talking about the schools
where they don't, where they don't. I think that's a contradiction. Now,
if you want to put people on I'm just telling
you the only reason. The only reason is because of
the television money, Fred, and that is it. They don't

(13:00):
care about the kids long term health. We had a
kid already a quarterback from Georgia was a Georgia's state,
Rob g who's who already has some heart condition from
the coronavirus. The thing that it's only been around for
what six months? A half a year and he's already
got he already has a long term issue already, and

(13:26):
they say it's from the coronavirus. That's all I'm saying.
To expose all these kids, where will they be? Fred will,
Nick Saban and Jim Harbaugh and Ryan Day? Will those
guys be around when these kids down the road when
they're sick? All right? So the question is, then, Rob,
is the big Ted making a mistake by refusing to

(13:47):
even consider playing football in the fall. We're gonna continue
the conversation with you. Next, it's The Odd Couple with
Fred Rogan and for Chris on Fox Sports Radio. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple with
Chris Brussa then Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern
four pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
All Right, The Odd Couple on Fox Sports Radio. Fred

(14:10):
Rogan fillinding for Chris Brussard along with Rob Parker, Blue
EMU Maximum Pain Relief. It works fast and you won't stink.
It's farmacists recommended odor free pain relief for muscle pain, backaches, brains, brains,
or even arthritis. There is no stinging or burning involved.
It's simple pain relief blue EMU maximum pain relief. It

(14:32):
works fast. But the most important part is you won't stink. Rob.
I think that's the most important part of that spot,
no doubt about it. You hate the stink. We certainly
don't stink on this show thee Yes We do eight
seven seven ninety nine off Fox. Is the Big Ten
making a mistake? Fred? You think the Big ten and

(14:56):
PAC twelve we're gonna be on the wrong side of history.
I do not, Rob. I'm just telling you this. This
We're in Vegas. We got the dice. You're gonna hit
the point or crap out if everybody else plays the
Big ten and the PAC twelfth crap out. And you
know what, either way, if they have an outbreak in
the SEC people are just going to go well, you know,

(15:16):
they tried to play, and they'll just sweep it under
the rug and they won't care. I just think that
given the circumstances, even when the Olympics was canceled to
go forward with college football is irresponsible without knowing what
damage can be done. Let's hear where people out to
say age seven seven ninety nine on Fox will start
with Jim in Tucson. You're in the odd couple of

(15:39):
Fox Sports Radio. What you got, Jim hey Man. One
thing I wanted to say. I went to Chapman University.
I'm a Chapman alum. So Fred, your son's gonna love it.
It's a great school, is gonna get a great education. Cool, awesome.
Grew up listening to you as I was a kid
in southern California. So great to hear you on the show.
I agree with Fred on this man, and there's a
lot of points with it. But to make the comment

(16:01):
that student athletes are employees of the school, I vehemently
disagree with that. I started out at the Division one
school I transferred to Chapman. I was a student athlete.
Students are, and I hate to stay entitled, but they
have more opportunities in different avenues so they can travel
through their college matriculation. So let them play. And I
get the point that you're saying about they're getting the

(16:23):
outbreaks and what happened at UNC. However, out of all
these outbreaks, what does it mean. Look at the death rate,
look at the effect rate, and it's they don't know, Jim.
That's what you don't know. You do not know what
the long term effects will be. And it's not fair.
A professional athlete who make money and it's their job.

(16:43):
I respect whether they opt in or opt out, but
for kids to put kids out there without knowing what
the long term effects are and to cancel Division in two,
two and three football and play Division one is irresponsible
by the people in charge. That's just my opinion. Rob.
Let me tell you. You want to know why they
cancel Division two and Division three. They don't make any money, Well,

(17:05):
they don't make any money, but moreover, moreover, it's the
expense to test and create the protocols. I was told.
For example, at the Division three level, it's one hundred
and fifty dollars a test, okay, and they're not generating
any revenue. So one hundred and fifty dollars a test,
so many times a week, for so many kids, for

(17:25):
so many games, and they just want to we can't
afford it. If they could have afforded it, do you
think they might have played? Yeah, I just I don't
think so, I really don't. I really don't because of
the unknown Mark and Sacramento. You're on the odd couple
of Fox Sports Radio. What's up? Mark? What's going on? Gentlemen?
How are you good? And mister Rogan, I'm an adult

(17:46):
who's listened to you growing up in southern California greatly
appreciated everybody. Hey, Mark, forty years on local television in
the number two market, Fred right, La would New York
our number two television market in the country. It's incredible.
There was four voices growing up, real quick, Vince Kelly's Chick, Hearns,

(18:10):
Jim Hills, and Bred Rogan. That's what I'm talking about.
That's that's that's some group to be in the company
to be with. I appreciate it real real quick. Uh right.
We started the week with this conversation. Yes, and and
I'm just gonna say this, it's I don't think there's
a right or wrong because we don't know what this

(18:30):
is really doing. Uh And And to say that those
guys made a bad choice in not playing step outside
the sports world and go back into the real world.
You're not gonna run through this, mister Rogan, it's running
through us. It just hit my family now, I hate
to say it, and real quick too. Sixty or seventy

(18:53):
of these kids are African American. So the percentage of
them going back home to their neighborhoods and maybe giving
it to the people and those neighborhoods is where people
are not even thinking about. It's not just just so
they can play football. They're gonna go home and they
live in the inner cities, and that's where it's pread
quicker than any place. At great point, Mark, what are

(19:14):
you saying, don't play football or don't go to school period,
just everybody staying home. I'm saying you're running into a
tidal way by going back and litting kids who you
can't legislate their behavior interact with football players. And I
don't care what the coaches say. I'm a parent. I
got boys. I couldn't control those knuckliers all the time
now from their father. Can't control these athletes all the time.

(19:36):
And you already saw when remember when Florida and Texas
and all those spring breakers went down there and then
they and the virus spread like wildfire. Remember that, and
all the three states that they opened up. They they
went to the bars, ran to the beaches. It was read,
it went to the pools, and then it became a cesspool.

(19:58):
It just did. Thanks for to call appreciated Alan in Cleveland.
You're on the yard a couple of Fox Sports Radio.
What's up? Alan? Are you guys doing. I just wanted
to say, appreciate you guys having me all listen to
you guys every day. Great show. Thank you, Thank you
for support Alan. Oh, of course, Man, all you wanted
to say argue with you, Rob. I mean, you think
about why the country wasn't shut down in time and

(20:19):
while we're leading the world and death is because of
money and just and just because like we want normalcy.
That's not an excuse to jeopardize people's health now, unless
you're gonna put them in a bubble. It isn't smart
because you think about fame, fortune and money. It shouldn't
be the most important thing in people's lives. Because remember
what they said, They say young people couldn't get it,
then they started getting it. They say young people couldn't die,

(20:41):
and they started dying. Like when are we going to
learn decisions can't be based off of selfish emotions? Okay,
but what if what if using that argument, what if
they play football in the Big twelve or the SEC
or they playing the ACC What if those conferences play?
Are they wrong because you think about the long term effect.

(21:01):
We don't know. So if you don't know the long
term effect, he's the best air on the side of caution, right, Alan,
You're spot on, and that's it. We do not know.
And he made the best point of all. Fred They
told us young people couldn't get it. It was if
you're over sixty years old, or it's the grandparents, or
it was it was older people. Am I right? Isn't

(21:23):
that what they told us? Friendly? Yeah, and have what
they right? No, they weren't right because we don't know.
Sean and Sacramento, you're in the odd couple. Fox Sports
rated what you got. Sean my uncle from another mother man,
And I'm loving Freddy Row. I didn't grow up in
southern California, but every time he's on the show Man,
it's always it's always appointment listening. Man, you're a man

(21:45):
of great taste. Thank you very much. Thanks a real
quick man. My take is, you know, sometimes you see
that guy at the bar stumbling around you got to
take his keys away from him. Sometimes you gotta protect
people who don't know how to protect themselves. Man, And
I get where the the Big ten parents are coming from.
You know, they're outraged because there's their kids chance to
go out there and shine. Well, what's the rust of

(22:06):
the answerdable A just says that they're going to give
them another year of eligibility, So why even push it
that hard? And you got to also look look at
the people that are gonna be affected by it, that
aren't playing. Look at guys like coach k coaches like
Mac Brown. These guys are in the high risk category.
So even though these students might be going out there
catching it not really caring, they could bring it back
to their coach, They could bring it back to their families.

(22:26):
And the NC Double A nor A Division One Football
has made no guarantee that they'll be taking care of
them outside of this one playing year, so there's really
no need for us. And man, you're gonna you're gonna
risk it all. And what's gonna happen if this, if
this outbreak doesn't calm down soon, that we'll be looking
at a whole another year this let's just pump the
brakes and let let all this settle down while we'll
find the vaccine. And thanks for listening, and thanks for

(22:48):
the kind words. Roberts. Tonight, I must win for Kawai
and the Clippers. NBA champion Dante Jones has the answer. Next,

he's an NBA champ. Dante Jones that he joins us now. Dante,
thanks for coming on. What's up, Dote? What's up? Fellas
I was doing today? We're doing all right? Okay? The

(23:33):
Clippers in Dallas tonight. Rob thinks the Clippers are the
deepest team in the NBA and he believes they will
win the title. Do you echo those sentiments. I'm a
little scared of this matchup right now. I do like
the Clippers a lot, but this matchup presents a little
bit of problems. Number one, because of the continuity amongst
the team. It had two guys leave the bubble having
played as a full unit together, one of the major contributors,

(23:58):
who is Montrez Horroll, who who's trying to play his
way in shape. So they can't count on the bench
production like they usually do. So they're they're leaning on
the two superstars to guard and give you offensive production,
and it just seems like every things are not clicking
with it they should right now. So this matchup presents
a problem us. I think it's gonna go to seven

(24:18):
seven games with the Dallas Mavericks because they just are
that potent offensively at historically great offensive team with a
team that doesn't have any defensive continuity. How about the Lakers,
were you Dante on the win yesterday? They had played
terrible for the most part in the bubble. The numbers

(24:39):
were really awful. I mean, even in that game one, uh,
Portland had given up an average of one hundred and
twenty three points. The Lakers only got ninety. They don't
shoot the three well, did they cure some of those
ills with that win. Right this ship are still we're
not sure yet. I think they've shown exactly how they

(25:01):
have to play basketball. And it goes back to the
Showtime Lakers. Because they have so many athletes, they shouldn't
have to depend on three point shooting spacing the floor,
and they should just play at the pace that they
played last night. And that's been one thing that I've
been waiting to see why it hasn't been done them.
Those guys trying to play half court basketball is not it.
There's gonna be opportunities where you have to play half

(25:22):
court basketball, but their pace should be insane like it
was last night with Lebron James flying up and down
the floor. You can't find a matchup for him in
transition like that. And then you have two great big
men in JaVale McGee at two great athletic big men
in A d and JaVale McGee, who you can't really
gain plan for all that athleticism flying at you at

(25:43):
one point in time. So that is the pace that
they need to and then everything will start clicking. Guys
to start making shots when they see the ball going
on layups and ducks, and they'll start having fun. They
won't start overthinking they should not be a half court
basketball team with Lebron James walking the ball the floor.
If they continue to play that fast, they will be fine.
NBA champ Dante Jones with us Fred Rogan in for
Chris Bruside along with Bob Parker on the Odd Couple

(26:06):
on Fox Sports Radio. Dante, with all due respect, I
think you're being a bit generous when it comes to
the Lakers. Let me tell you why, and you tell
me why I'm wrong. Okay, okay, okay. I think with
the Lakers, yeah, you've got to move the ball, you've
got to advance the ball. But really, what it comes
down to this is the problem. There are two guys
that can play, A D and Lebron. So now who's

(26:27):
that third guy? And if he shows up, let's say
Kyle Kuzma, who's the fourth guy? Because I think, no
matter how much they run and they are very athletic
and very large, if A D and Lebron don't get
any help and they don't knock down some shots, because
as you know, the NBA is now a league where
you shoot from the outside, I think they're in trouble,

(26:47):
and that seems to be the concern I have. Who
is going to be that third and fourth guy on
a nightly basis. It can rotate, it can be done
by committee. It's Carl Kuzma, I mean, Kyle Kuzma. Is
it you want with Carl Kuza? I know that's what

(27:09):
does that make sense? That makes sense? But I think
the way you mask that and take a lot of
pressure off him is with your pace. And if you
have an insane pace like that like last night, UM,
you don't have to depend on somebody bailing you out.
As a third option. It can be by committee. I
think they have so many athletes that if you throw
a pace like that, you can put teams in the independalty. Defensively, Um,

(27:30):
you can get easy buckets and guys don't have to
manufacture points. They'll be able to just get out and
be on the reciprocating end of the two great players
you have on the floor that at that time a D.
There's not a big man that can run with a D.
And Javel McGee does better in the pace that they
play last night because it's it's sort of the pace.
It is the pace that the Golden State Wars were planning.
You can't map a defense for athletes flying at you.

(27:53):
You get more possessions, you get more easier baskets, you
put more pressure on the defense. Lebron James trying to
back you down, back you down, trying to find a shooter.
That's that. That is something that can work on some
settings under out of bound, side out of bounds, but
if you play with the insane pace, you're just gonna
get easy buckets. Dante uh Damian Lillard obviously dislocated his

(28:13):
left index finger. X rays were negative. They said he's
going to play Game three tomorrow. Have you ever dislocated
your finger? And tell me about getting the ball. Even
though it's not as shooting him shooting hand, can it
affect you? You know, just the way you receive the
ball and and and your feel before you shoot. Um,

(28:38):
it can. But it's not something that's gonna stop his production.
He's been insanely or an insane zone offensively, and I
think he'll stay there. He'll be able to manufacture points.
What I have to worry about the left a left
finger disclocation, it's just something that's going to be annoying.
But like modern medicine is something that could take that
pain away and make sure he's fine for for a night.

(29:01):
It's not something that's gonna stop him from from getting
a job done. Dante, I watched Portland and Utah today.
I gotta tell you something. I mean Portland and Denver.
I mean Denver and Utah good. I went to game.
When you watching a Frank, can you pay your cable
bill and stop using the cut the card? And I
was using firestick us. I was watching Utah and Denver.

(29:24):
I gotta tell you something, Dante. Going into that series,
I like Denver. I like Denver a lot. I don't
think I like Denver as much anymore. I think Utah
is pretty good. I think you talk and knocked that much.
Blow him out today. Yeah, you know what, I've never
been a fan of a big man of your caliber
number one because he's a passer. So if your best

(29:45):
player is a passer only and does not manufacture points
and take on double teams and do things of that nature, um,
then you're gonna be stuck in a in a in
a in a tight spot when you need a superstar
to take over in the playoffs and number two defend
Tally he's not at the caliber of a Gobert. Your
big man should be able to fact affect the game

(30:05):
rebounding and defensively, because that's what championship level teams bigs do.
So that's why I did not have have them that
could possibly win a championship or advanced I like Gobert.
Gobert's presence along with Utah scores last thing Dante. In
the East, you know, obviously there's Janis there, But is

(30:26):
there any team people like Miami? Uh, people are are
are saying that there's a chance that it could be
somebody different. Obviously Philadelphia had the injury. There's Boston there, Toronto.
Who do you like in the East? Was it Milwaukee
or was it never Milwaukee? Or is it or is
it somebody different? It's always been Toronto for men. Toronto

(30:50):
reminds me of the Pistons of the Chauncey Billups and
Richard Hamilton and Wallace Pistons. Those guys play extremely hard.
You know, I covered that team that was a team
one of the greatest all time. Just teams, not superstars, right,
and that team has championship experience. They have guys that
are winners. The guys who know their role. They have

(31:13):
a young superstar in Pascal Fia can put points on
the board. The leadership of Kyle Lowry, flet Fred Lamfiet
is playing a insane um. Those guys have been there
and they're tough, tough minded. They think they think of
themselves as the champions and they're defending their title and
I see it as it's theirs their job to be dethrowned.

(31:35):
Those guys can get to the championship easily in my opinion,
because they have that championship caliber. Yeah, it's remarkable. I mean,
you lose Kawhi Leonard, you're right there, and Dante have
to agree with you. The way this thing is shaken
out right now. I think he'd be hard pressed to
say that Milwaukee's gonna run over Toronto. I think they've
got to go through Toronto as the defending champs. Thanks
for coming on today. That was great stuff, totally. I

(31:57):
totally agree with showing them and thank you guys. Cool
Dante Ye appreciate it. NBA champ Dante Jones joining the
show now, Rob, there's a reason why Chris Paul, He's
led teams to the playoffs and they flame out. I
think I've got the reason. I think I've figured this out,
and we'll tell you what it is next On The
Odd Couple. Fred rogan In for Chris on Fox Sports Radio.

Fred rogan In for Chris Broussard with the odd Man

(32:40):
one battery destination. No matter what battery problems you're dealing with,
you can find your battery solution at AutoZone. Next time
you're having starting trouble. And who doesn't start at AutoZone,
America's number one battery destination. Get in the zone, Get
in AutoZone, Rob, Is it me? Or when it comes

(33:00):
to closing games, does Chris Paul struggle? Now? Chris Paul
has had a resurgence this year with Oklahoma City. Everybody
was raven because you remember when the trade went on
and they gave up Russell Westbrook. Everybody figured, okay, they
just packed it in right, and instead this team excelled,

(33:21):
made the playoffs, and people were renting and raving about
Chris Paul. Yeah, and it's really remarkable because at his age,
you thought you would get Chris Paul. The Thunder then
got rid of Paul George and brought in Gallinari and
Shay Giljis, Alexander and draft picks from the Clippers, and
you think they're in a complete rebuild. Nobody expected Chris

(33:42):
Paul to have a complete and total resurgence for the
most party's been injury free. That is unusual. And the
Thunder played very well. They're a good basketball team with
a very bright future. They'll keep Alexander, will they resigned Gallinari?
I don't know, but he's having a great year as well. Yes, right, yeah,
But when it comes to Chris Paul, he played for
the Clippers, he played in New Orleans, he played in Houston,

(34:06):
He's with Oklahoma City. Chris Paul's an outstanding guard. You
could argue, really even at his age, one of the
top three point guards in the league. He and he
is the general. He runs the show. So why is
it that the man you turn to that runs the
show the general? One of the smartest players in basketball,

(34:29):
doesn't seem to win the big ones, doesn't seem to
be able to close. That's I think that's that's fair,
And I don't know if it's really even. You might
be being nice by seams, but I really you remember
a couple of years ago with the Clippers, he had
that huge Game six? Do you remember what I'm talking about? Fred?

(34:52):
I can't remember who they were playing to force the
Game seven, and then he had a dud in Game seven,
Like he played great and gave the Clippers a chance
to win the series and then was a no show
basically for Game seven. Was a couple of years ago. Um,
but was that what it was? Uh? I can't I

(35:12):
can't remember the team. But but my point is anyway,
is that he always seems to be m Ia in
the biggest game where you need him, and and it's
either he's injured and not available or he doesn't play well.
And everybody was high or on. Okay, see going in
and with the Westbrook injury, right, we're people, Oh, oh,

(35:34):
Houston might be in trouble. Oh and what's happened? Yeah,
they're not in trouble. No, the ant Men of Houston
are not in trouble, not at all. Yeah, and Houston,
Rob It's interesting during the regular season, if we have
this conversation and the regular season played out as it
was supposed to, Okay, I would say to you, Houston's
getting knocked out in the first round of the playoffs

(35:55):
if the regular season had played out the way it's
supposed to, because the ant men of Houston and simply
would not be big enough and this running gun, AAU
basketball would not work. But you condense things, you get
into that bubble and you're playing AAU ball. That's what
it looks like at any gym across America on a
Saturday morning, it looks like AAU basketball. The Rockets have

(36:18):
a real shot here, a real shot. Even with Westbrook
out and Chris Paul, who has been so terrific, he's
not enough. He's not enough to lead Oklahoma City past
Houston in that series. But that leads to this. Chris Paul,
a great player, has not won a championship. He may

(36:38):
be Dan Marino at the end of the day, a
great player who really got it but just couldn't close
because every team. He's a good comparison. I mean, Dan
Marino was as good as it gets. Had he won
a couple of championships, people might be talking about him
as the greatest quarterback ever his numbers. Yeah, absolutely, Chris.

(36:58):
He just can't close. That's It's unfortunate. He's very intense.
I know when he played for the Clippers, I could
call the play close game, twenty five seconds left, Clipper ball.
I don't care what arena they were in. If I'm
watching on TV, the minute they go to that huddle,
I can call the play. Was that predictable? You could
just because you've seen him over the years, every time

(37:20):
inbound Chris Paul, move right side, go to the elbow. Okay,
if you can drive, drive. If you can't, you're stopped.
Shoot every time, every game, every play, end of every game.
And ultimately it wasn't enough. I you know, I think
he's going to be a remeoinder as a great player,

(37:42):
but honestly, at this point in his career and the
team he's on, he may never win an NBA title.
