The Odd Couple On a trash Talking Tuesday, Rob Parker

Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent of more in

talk to him in about thirty minutes and we'll also
take your calls. Fred. The NBA season is kicked off,
(01:03):
Robit has I'm checking one ten to seventy seven over
the Warriors, and a what a start. I don't want
to be like a prisoner of the moment. And the
Lakers and Clippers are coming up in about an hour
or so. That's the nightcap on this opening night for
the NBA. But Fred, I think anybody watching tonight, and
(01:25):
this is only game one, we're not going to be
prisoners of the moment, all right, But the Brooklyn Nets
are going to be a problem in the Eastern Conference.
Everybody stays healthy, if everybody stays healthy, if Kyrie keeps
his head screwed on straight, they are going to be
a problem, Rob, They are. And I want you to
(01:48):
know that when those two guys signed last summer in Brooklyn,
No Lie, and you could go check my Twitter, I
said the Clippers would win last year, which they didn't,
and then I said the Nets would win the following year.
And I'm not so sure who's going to win, but
I think the Nets have a great shot to get there.
I don't want to come off as like, oh, the
(02:10):
first game of the year and there's no Clay and
Golden State playing in Brooklyn and they got whitewashed by
thirty and Rob's going crazy for the Nets. No KD.
We forgot about KD, Fred, You know why, because he
out of sight, out of mind, didn't we He's one
of the two or three best players in the league. Well, yeah,
(02:31):
it's kind of tough to actually forget about him. And
you knew. My point with the Nets has always been this,
It's that Kevin Durant, if he's healthy, all right, he's
in a different league. He's on a different planet. If
Kyrie Irving plays, stays healthy and plays like he can,
they're gonna be tough. I mean, I'm going to assume
that Durant's gonna be healthy. Okay, maybe it's a big leap,
(02:54):
but I'm gonna say he's gonna stay healthy. If that's
the case. Really comes down in my mind to how
Kyrie play. If he plays well, they are going to
be unstoppable. Tonight, Kyrie has twenty six, Durant has twenty two.
So they're plus twenty six with Durant on the court
and plus thirty two with Kyrie on the court. That's
what I'm saying. Yeah, they're gonna be really tough to
(03:16):
be But before we get crazy about this, let's just
be honest. The Warriors are done. This is I don't
think they'll ever win again, Fred, and I'm dead serious.
Once Durant left that squad, and this is even before
Clay got hurt again, I just thought that that that's
run its course, Like they had a nice thing going.
(03:39):
I think the windows closed on them. And I'm not
just basing it off of one game and Clay. Eventually
Fred is going to get healthy again, right, but I
don't know about it. You would think he would get
healthy again eventually, but these are two very devastating injuries
that he suffered. Two. Well, he may never be the same, right, yeah,
I don't know if he'll be the same guy. And
(04:01):
what you have with the Warriors is and it's really sad.
Durant leaves, okay, but then the injuries and it just
demolished them. It devastated them and there's really no way
they can come back. They've got to do something different.
Now they've got to think about it. I mean they
had with the second pick in the draft. There, it's
(04:22):
going to take time for them. Draymond Greene is fine
when he's the fourth guy and the team he's one
of your guys you're counting on to lead you. Not
so fine. It's good he got paid, but he's not
that guy. So now you have him and Steph Curry. Okay,
Well they're not gonna win. It's simple. They're not gonna win.
And here's the other one. So the second game I
(04:44):
just mentioned the Lakers and Clippers, and I think the
Clippers will be better this year. And I know that
they're a different team. They don't have Doc Rivers and
everything didn't happen. And I know people appointing to all
kinds of Fred, Oh, well, look, you know they treated
Paul George and Kawhi Leonard differently like stars and this,
(05:08):
and that they were up three to one before they choked.
It's not like they went to the playoffs and got
knocked out in the first round because they weren't good
enough or they didn't have any chemistry at all. They
they were right where they were supposed to be. Would
you disagree with that when they were up three to
one over Denver? Well? Absolutely, But you know that's if
ifs were bearing nuts. You know, I get it. I'm
(05:29):
just saying, but it was a choke job. That's a
good team and if Tyron lou can get them to
be different. That's why my pick this year is going
to be Brooklyn against the Clippers for the NBA Finals.
Don't faint, Fred, That's where I'm going. I'm gonna go
back to the well I picked the Clippers last year.
(05:52):
I lost a ton of wing bets to people. I'm
going to go with the Clippers and the Nets. It
will be the be a final of the second class
citizens of the also rans. Right, both teams would be
the second teams in their respective cities. Right, the Knicks
are as bad as the Knicks are. The Knicks are
(06:14):
the number one team in New York? Right, But what's two? Yeah?
I guess they are. But why because of the truth
that you but but you know what, it's always been
about the Knicks, because the Nets played in New Jersey, frame,
and you might as well be playing in Mars okay
or Mars seriously. And the Clippers, of course are number
(06:35):
two to the Lakers, and there's no if fans or
butts about that in this town. So you could have
the two number two teams in the NBA Finals. I'll
take your wings now because bet what's our bet? Our
bet is, uh, well, I'm not doing six hundred wings again,
and I'm not betting six hundred wings like you crazy
with sure gonna betting me six hundred wings. But I paid,
(06:58):
you did pay right away, all right. I'm gonna take
the Lakers and Brooklyn. So I'm gonna go with you
on Brooklyn here's the problem Rob with your selection of
the Clippers, and it's it's really simple. The Lakers got better.
The Clippers didn't the Lakers after the Lakers didn't play, though,
(07:18):
and that's why you can't really gauge them totally against.
If the Lakers had beaten the Clippers to get their FRED,
then maybe I would buy into that. But they didn't meet.
They didn't meet, so I'm not there to think that
the Clippers can't beat the Lakers. They beat Miami, they
beat a Denver team to get there. They didn't beat
(07:39):
the Clippers at their best. I think the Clippers are
better than the Lakers. I'm not so sure. Now. Last
year I would have made that argument on paper, I
was with you, But this year, not on paper, I
don't see it. Now. Tyler is gonna try some new things,
and he's also going to try to get Kawhi Leonard
open in the mid range, get him those little mid
range shot fifteen feet out where defenses no longer play
(08:03):
because they spread the court to try to stop the three,
so you can hit those little mid range shots, and
that's what Kawhi Leonard lives on. Yeah, he's going to
try that, but Ultimately, the Lakers are better. They're just
a better team at the period. And now, as all
of the buzz was around the Clippers last year, the
buzzes around the Lakers. Yeah, and I'll hear. I'll say
(08:26):
this that in Los Angeles, for example, you know, being
the poor step child, the number two, the Clippers got
knocked backwards, not only because they blew a three one lead,
not only because everybody thought they were gonna win the
whole thing. No, they got knocked back in their own
market because the Lakers won. That was now, but that
(08:48):
the Lakers winning has nothing to do with what they
have to do and how they play for it. It's
not connected. And I'll give you a perfect example. Lebron
when he went to Miami. They didn't win the first year,
they lost to an inferior Dallas Mavericks team. Am I
right or wrong? Yes? And did that mean that was
(09:08):
the end of it? Oh? It didn't work. Oh, they
put these guys together, they ran through the regular season,
and then they lost to a Dallas Mavericks team with
one star. They had three. And what did they do?
They came back the next year and they were able
to win. Kawhi Leonards, not thirty five. That was his
(09:29):
last shot and they lost. Paul George is much better
than he played at down the stretch against Denver. Those
guys are better. I think you're taking a look at
those guys at a snapshot and at their lowest moment
in their NBA careers and thinking that's the future. That's
the mistake when you look at the Clippers. Well you
(09:53):
can say that, and I hear what you're saying, but
the bottom line is this. You're saying, the Clippers have Kawhi,
they have Paul George. Granted acknowledged. That's all you need
in the NBA. You need two star players fred to
have a shot, yes or no, rob the Lakers have
Anthony Davis and Lebron James if you only need to, right.
(10:15):
But but that doesn't mean that they can't beat those guys,
is what I'm saying to you. You know what you
get either pair? Who do you take? You get either pair.
You're gonna start your team, and you can have Paul George.
I would take Kawai and Paul George. Lebron James is
gonna be thirty six. I don't know what I'm gonna
get these other two guys are in their primes when
(10:38):
they got four great years ahead of them. You don't
know what you're gonna get. I think you saw last
year what you're gonna get. That was last year. I
don't know what this year holds. If that was the case,
as great as Lebron has been, he wouldn't be a
two thirty five hitter. And what I mean is he's
won four championships in seventeen years. Why do I think
automatically he's gonna win again when he's only won four
(11:01):
times in seventeen years. It's not automatic. But you can't
make the argument that last year he looked as good
as he has in his entire career. He was good,
he wasn't as good. He didn't win the VP and
in the past he's won vpsle he got killed in
the VP Bowl. And you know what was that? Was
that accurate? Yate? You know what? Yannis? Okay, fine, he
(11:27):
had better numbers. You're telling me that Lebron James did
not mean as much, if not more, to the Lakers,
And don't use the argument, Well, if the Bucks didn't
have Jannis, they wouldn't even be competitive. It wouldn't be competitive.
But you know what, they didn't win a title. He
hasn't won a title. No, But but we're talking about
the regular season. But I understand what you're talking about.
(11:48):
When you're looking at it and you're thinking that everything's
going to be just as it was a year ago.
Sports doesn't work like that. And if that was the case,
Lebron James would have way more championships and he doesn't.
So I'm telling you, I've seen Lebron lose before many times.
I've seen Lebron not get it done when he was
even younger and had had a supporting cast. And now
(12:14):
the league is better. KD, his arch rival, was gone
last year. Kd's back. You don't think that's in Lebron's way.
KD well in his way during the regular season. Now,
just and I'm talking about to try to win, to
repeat as a champion. KD is in his way. That's
where we couldn't beat with Golden State. All right, do
(12:35):
you believe that last year Lebron really went on a
revenge tour? Do you believe that last year given what
happened the year before where it was atrocity And I
made the comment then Rob that yeah, he wears a
Laker uniform, but he's not a Laker, so you know
I was there. But are you telling me, after what
you saw last year and the improvements that the Lakers me,
(13:01):
you can actually say they're deeper than the Clippers. Although
I love Marcus Morris on the Clippers, but the Lakers
are now deeper. You're telling me that the Lakers are
a better team than the Clippers, and the Clippers are
gonna win the championship. I would take the Clippers to
come back from what happened to them a year ago.
(13:22):
I still like their team, and if ty Luke can
get the best out of them, there's no way those
two guys will ever hear me out. Fred, ever play
as poorly as they played against Denver, You'll never see
that day they talk about a revenge tour and having
to bounce back and save their reputations. Those two guys
will be playing as well as they have and watch
(13:45):
and see from the Clippers. I still like them and
I like the Nets. All right, I've got a message
for all the Tom Brady fan boys in the media,

(14:57):
there was much to do ballyhoo about Tom Brady going
to the Tampa Bay Bucks. Am I right? Ye? People
were going crazy about, right, the weapons that he has,
how much Tom Brady was going to, you know, go
crazy with having all these weapons at his dispose. Of
(15:22):
what kind of season would you say tom Brady's had
fair season? I think that goes back to what I
said earlier. You're playing the name game. Oh, we got
Tom Brady. We're going to the super Bowl. We're ready
to go. This is it. We've got the guy, he's
got weapons, and we're ready to go. A couple of things.
First of all, Tom Brady is not running Tom Brady's
offense in Tampa. He's running Bruce Arian's offense in Tampa.
(15:45):
And they didn't make the adjustments early on to allow
him to be comfortable. There's two ways to coach. Come
in here, this is what we do and this is
how we do it. Or come in here. What are
you comfortable with? What do you like to do? How
do you do things? Okay, we're going to work around
that at the beginning because we need you comfortable because
you have a track record of success. Also, you're getting
(16:08):
a guy who is not at the early stages of
his career. Rob it's the tail end and this is
the final hurrah. Okay, So he was he was protected
with the Patriots in a system that worked for him,
and he flourished within the system, even though he lost
a little mustard on his fastball the last couple of seasons.
(16:31):
I'm glad you're being honest. Okaya, is that fair? That's fair. Okay,
So he flourished in a system that was designed around him.
He goes to Tampa, the system was not designed around him,
and he didn't gain any more mustard on his fastball.
That being said, this season's okay. I mean they're fine.
(16:52):
They're not winning the super Bowl playoffs. Maybe one and
done maybe, but they're not going to improve that much
because of who he is and where he's it, where
he is and the system he's in. Well, but but
here's here's my problem. Okay, So maybe Tom didn't do
his due diligence when you say they're supposed to like
(17:14):
undo everything that they've done to bring Tom Brady in.
Or when you leave a system and you go to
a new coach, don't you have to make some adjustments? Right?
You're not you're not playing for Bill Belichick anymore. You're
playing for Bruce Arians. So Tom Brady has to alter
and understand what he's getting himself into. Some of that
(17:36):
has to go on Tom Brady, not just on Bruce Arians.
Do you disagree with that? No, I would agree with
that one hundred percent. Those are conversations that should have
been had. But if I remember the story correctly, The
most surprised people in the world that he was coming
was Tampa. When he called and said I'm coming, they
thought it was a joke. Initially, maybe he wanted to
(17:57):
go to a place where there were no state taxes
and you could get an early bird special left four o'clock. Absolutely, absolutely.
Here are some of the numbers. Let me give you these,
Fred Okay, okay, So Tom Brady record nine and five,
sixty five percent completion, ninety seven point five rating, three thousand,
(18:18):
eight hundred eighty six yards, thirty two passing touchdowns, three
rushing and touchdowns, and eleven interceptions. Okay. Kyler Murray eight
and six records sixty seven point six percent completion, ninety
seven point one rating, so very close to Brady. Couple
hundred yards less, thirty six thirty seven, twenty six touchdowns.
(18:41):
So he has less touchdowns, but he has eleven rushing
Tom Brady only has three, and he has eleven interceptions,
which is the same number as Brady. Yeah, and so
I don't get Rob I know you're going to finish him.
I don't get Kyler Murray. So that's the one Kyler Murray.
So you don't think his eleven in Russian and twenty six,
which would give him thirty seven touchdowns compared to Brady's
(19:06):
thirty five. Yeah. Yeah, well Brady's throwing for two hundred
more yards. Murray's completion rate is just a stage better, Ye,
just a tad bit better. But honestly, that's the one
I don't get. I mean, he's an exciting player, there's
no question about it, but Kyla is also in a
(19:26):
better division FRED playing against stiffer competition. Right, Tom Brady
has has Atlanta right, and what Jacksonville walls, Caroline. I mean,
they have easier teams, and when Tom Brady came up
against the Saints, he's owing two against the better teams
and his struggled. That's a fair point, that really is.
(19:50):
I mean, I saw Kyler Murray here locally in Los
Angeles where I live. If you're just tuning in, I'm
filling in for Chris Russard. I saw him play against
the Rams, and they made him look minuscule and they
made him seem very average. Now, the Rams have an
incredible defense, don't get me wrong, unless they're slow Kyler
Murray down. Would you say I said, they forget out
(20:15):
a way to slow Kyler Murray down right. I was
just making it funny about how poorly they played against
the Jets. But but I get it. But it says
a lot about Tom Brady. I think the expectations Fred
were through the roof and Brady didn't didn't get there.
Do you think that that's what it was that people
expected much more? Because you're right, the numbers aren't awful,
(20:37):
but they liked the Kyler numbers better. And for them
to pick him over Brady says something, especially because they
have a their records not as good and they're not
a shoeing to make the playoffs. Yeah, I think the
expectations were great. I think you know, when you get
Tom Brady and everybody in Tampa went insane and think
(20:59):
bad rob to When all of this has happened, the
first reaction was all, good, well, here we come, super Bowl,
here we come. We're good to go. We've got our guy.
It's Tom Brady. Okay. Whether that influences people or not
that make the decision or vote, you know, in the
back of your mind, you know that, well they've got
Tom Brady. They ought to be winning, and it hasn't
(21:22):
been a great at times. He has fought with Bruce Arians.
Bruce Arians has called him out publicly, and you're probably
thinking to yourself, Okay, so they get Brady, they have
a chance to win the super Bowl. But they have
all these weapons, and remember Antonio Brown came and Grock,
Leonard Fournette. Who didn't they get They got everybody, We
(21:43):
got everybody, We're ready to go. Wait a minute, we're
not going to win the Super Bowl. And he's being
called out publicly by his coach. And if you live
in Tampa, you think this is a pretty good year. Okay,
we could have done better, but we're better than we were.
Truth of the matter is the expectation was much higher,
and with that expectation, they didn't deliver. And since they
(22:05):
didn't deliver, the feeling probably is Tom Brady didn't deliver.
Don't you know. The numbers might be comparable, they're close,
but Tom Brady didn't deliver. I'd deliver what he was
expected to. I agree with that. I think that there
was a build up that he did not live up to.
Despite the Bucks being nine and five and making the
playoffs for the first time. What is that thirteen years
(22:27):
or twelve yeah, thirteen years then made the plaofs in twelve.
All right, the college football playoff is set and we'll
get into that with our man Apiece Denam. He joins
us next. But First, Fox Sports Radio has the best

(23:29):
of sports. But first. Ap Steenthum is a college football
insider for WAHP and he joins the Eye Couple right
here on Fox Sports Radio. AP. What's happening, hey Man? Good,
good evening, Robin fed what's going on y'all? Man doing great?
Let's just get to it, you know, people, AP notre
(23:55):
Dame got waxed and yet they're still in the top four.
Where are you on what's happening to Notre Dame and
what does this say about you know, the committee and
how they do their business. Yeah, when Notre Dame is
a good football team. I had a chance to view
them up close against Georgia Tech. And what kind of
turned it around for me? Was there more athletic defense.
(24:16):
They had people that can get to the to the quarterback.
And when they played that game in South Ben. Matter
of fact, I went on radio all that week and said,
Notre Dame will win the game against Clemson in South Ben.
They were primed. Obviously they didn't have Trevor Lawrence, but
that quarterback from California, it took me three days to
spell his name, never mind say it, but he threw
for a for four hundred yards, but Notre Dame put
(24:37):
up forty seven. So they have a good offensive line,
tough runners that run to daylight, good physical receivers. They
have two excellent tight ends and Mayor and Tremble, and
the quarterback doesn't turn the ball over Ian book, and
he's accurate with the throws. He's nimble in the pocket.
So I like their offensive scheme. It's not like Alabama's,
(24:58):
which is a track team. Like I said, defensively, they
are much improved. And I saw them way back rob
when we first met twenty thirteen in January and that
that Orange Bowl game. Ayapf're a faded complete Who was
going to be in this playoff? Did it really even
matter if we played the season? That's a good question
(25:19):
a lot of people. I know Bill Hancock, he's the
executive director, and he's always preaching about integrity. So I
know some of those people on the committee. You've interviewed
him in the past, and they take it serious. But
you've got to figure that when you have teams with
two and three losses above teams that are undefeated and
they're not being given a chance, you do wonder for certain,
(25:40):
But I think the best four teams are in the playoffs.
I think Texas STM. You know, when you can say
that your best game is a twenty eight point lost
to Alabama in a down SEC, I don't think that's
a very good promotion for your team. How about Ohio State,
It didn't matter how many games they want to lost,
they were going to they are. They're just like they
(26:03):
want the Big Ten involved, don't they And they're the
queen of the Big Ten. So it just seems like
Ohio State has a seat at the table every year,
especially since Michigan's not good, right you know the wale
hoiwse states recruiting in that league. I mean, they're just
like Alabama in all fifty states, getting the top athletes
(26:25):
speed from the down South and maybe the Midwest. They
get some of their beef up front. But Ohio State
is one of those teams. I used to tell people
when you see herschel Walker playing a little one a
South Georgia school, I didn't have to watch him play
at Georgia to know he's gonna be a great football player.
They have talent on their team. They're recruiting against the
Alabama's and Clemsons of the world. And when you have
these leagues that have the autonomy, they can make their
(26:48):
own rules. There's those are for college football. It's not
against the rules. So they're gonna try to get their
best team and present them to the world. AP does
a team like Texas A and M have a great
do they have a legitimate gripe here that they should
have been included in the playoff? I mean, they're in
the discussion, serious discussion, but you have to make a decision.
(27:09):
There's always somebody left out, as we know during March Madness,
that sixty nine team or whatever it is now, it's
always why didn't you get in? Well, they played at Alabama,
they had a chance to show themselves and it was
a twenty eight point loss, and like I said, you know,
their best victory was a home win against Florida by
three points forty one thirty eight. We all saw Florida
gave Alabama everything they could handle. Have any of you
(27:32):
seen or heard of a defense this year, because I
haven't not only seen a defense, I haven't heard of
anybody playing defense. Our guest is AP set them college
football inside o AP. Today, Michigan fired defensive coordinator Don Brown. Yes,
(27:53):
to me, that signals only one thing, and that's that
Jim Harbaugh is going to sign an extension and stay
at Michigan because if they were going to clean house right,
they would just wait and let everybody go and a
new coach were bringing his own guy. For Don Brown
to lose his job before there's a contract extension for
(28:13):
Jim Harball, doesn't that say he's staying right, there would
be one sweep of the broom. Right, you wouldn't want
to waste your energy, right, But Michigan has not been
able to match Ohio State with the players from around
the country. They haven't. They don't have an elite quarterback,
Rob and Fred. If you don't have an elite quarterback,
how can you compete against these teams like quarterback? But
(28:33):
he was supposed to be able to recruit a quarterback,
wasn't he right? Absolutely, that's his responsibility. And in this
day and age, you're thinking, Hey, I can get anybody
in America, Michigan the winning his program in the country
all time. But I can't get a quarterback. So something's wrong.
I have to evaluate mattself. Why why can't we get
a Tom Brady? You know, one of your favorite players,
(28:53):
Rob from California right ap talking about recruiting, and I'm
based on the West Coast. I'm in Los Angeles, and
I look at West Coast football and it really doesn't
get a lot of love nationally. The Pac twelve gets
very little love nationally. It goes as USC goes. For
(29:14):
whatever reason, USC cannot put together teams that are dominant
any longer. Is that play Hilton? Is that the issue
at USC? Well, you used to be able to recruit
with your bicycle in Los Angeles, but something happened. You know,
there's no toughness to their teams. And you watch USC
and UCLA that you know, offensively, they have a set
(29:36):
of receivers as good as anybody with the Trojans and
their quarterback as well excellent, But they have to get
some toughness on defense. Just like I told you before.
Notre Dame they have a little bit more ability on
defense that puts them in the ballpark to compete with
these teams. But USC has got to get tougher on defense.
Like I said, it's you know, the SEC this year
(29:56):
was like the Big twelve East. Nobody played defense. It's
can take you ap last thing? Do we do? What?
You think they're going to expand the playoff? That four game,
four teams just doesn't seem as if it's is it?
I don't want to see anymore? I think you don't
(30:16):
want to get carried away. But but it's four enough?
And are they going to expand this to eight or
twelve or something else? Fowards enough? If you've studied this
since they've had the college football playoffs. I don't want
to see it like college basketball where you have a
team with three losses, there's no pressure. Do you recall
when Florida State would always lose to Miami and at
(30:38):
the end of the year you hear the preaching from
the choir how Florida State was the best team. Well,
of course they were. There was no pressure. Alabama goes
to the whole season undefeated, eleven SEC wins, and I
know it's a down year, but there's nothing like that
pressure of playing and trying to be trying to be
undefeated or have one loss. I mean, you could have
one loss in this system. I don't want to see
(30:59):
it become college basketball where we don't even care where
they played during the regular seasons and forest enough and
somebody's gonna get left out. You just got to get better.
I mean, I either have no sympathy for a Texas
or Michigan, or a Florida State or a USC or
any team that's you know, Nebraska, all these teams that
were bluebloods in the past. Compete, get some better players
in coaching, No doubt. His name, ap Stad him, my man,
(31:22):
