TV personality Telly Hughes is in for Chris, and he and Rob explain why the International takeover at Major League Baseball All-Star weekend highlighted by Shohei Ohtani, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Vlad Guerrero Jr. is good for the sport, tell us why ACL surgery wouldn't sway them from offering Kawhi Leonard a max contract extension this summer, and explain why the scary situation involving Richard Sherman is yet another reminder why people shouldn't rush to judgment on serious matters before having all the facts.

(00:22):
You're listening to the Best of the Odd Couple with
Chris Brush and Rod Harker. Before we get into the
takeaway from the All Star Game, just just give me
some feeling. Did it come across on television like the crowd,
the atmosphere, the buzz, Because I'm gonna tell you being

(00:43):
at the ballpark first of our college course field is
beautiful and it was a show and people were jack.
I don't know if it's because we haven't been able
to get into the big crowds and this is uh,
you know, we're getting past the pandemic and people felt
good being together. But what did it sound like on television?

(01:05):
It looked really good. It actually made the game more exciting,
one of the more exciting All Star games in recent years.
If you ask me, I think that a lot of
times they get boring, and you know, managers just start
throwing guys out there just because they need to get
them on the field. But I mean, it was a
well played game last night that featured a lot of

(01:28):
stars future stars and what the game is gonna look
like for years to come. And the atmosphere looked very
festive on television as well. I think that you know, um,
the Colorado Rockies organization and and course field, they did
a spectacular job putting on the home run Derby and

(01:48):
All Star game and uh, you know on the you know,
on the download, that's a that's a really nice stadium
and it's not new, it's that's a fairly old stadium.
I actually covered the first game ever at Coors Field.
The Mets opened up that place, and I was writing
for Newsday back then. Tell me so I was there, Yeah,

(02:08):
no doubt about. I was there, like uh ninety I
thought it was five No, because they played at Mile
High where the Broncos played when they first uh was
awarded an expansion team. Yeah, I gotta look up the
first game. But I was at the first game when

(02:31):
they broke in that building. Yeah. But but I will
say this the thing I think the biggest takeaway for
me was the international flavor of baseball, and Telly, I mean,
show hey, ol Tani. He won the home run derby
without even winning the event, do you know what I mean?

(02:53):
Like the American Idol runner up, right, they ended up
being the star and then one that wins it that
you forget about them. I mean that's where Oltani is.
So so we see Oltani and then you know, yesterday
in the game, he's pitching to who Fernando Tatis, right, yes?

(03:14):
And who's the MVP of the All Star Game? Vladimir
Guerrero Junior, who's Dominican? And the guy who closed the game,
Hendrix it's from Australia. I mean I could go on
and on and on about all the young talented stars.

(03:34):
I mean, where's vlad going. He's the youngest guy to
win the All Star MVP, the youngest guy ever. Think
about that. Tatis is twenty three, Oltani's twenty seven. These
are all your stars. And you know we talk about
the NBA with the International What do we have now?

(03:55):
Is it three years in a road at a non
American right has won the MVP in the NBA. It's correct,
Joannis twice right? And your kitch ye and now we
look at baseball and you know, we knew the big
controversy right before the home run derby Buddy stephen A,

(04:16):
you know, made some comments about Otani that caught fire
and about you know, him having to use an interpreter.
And of course it was just fitting last night that
Vlad had an interpreter, right, I mean how fitting was that? Yeah?
But for me, you know what it told me about

(04:37):
baseball a telly. And you notice, because you played, it
doesn't matter your your height, your weight, your size, anything.
Anybody can play if they have that hot eye, hand coordination,
if they can throw the ball, if they can make plays,
It doesn't matter. Baseball players come in all shapes and sizes. Also,
it doesn't matter what your background is or your culture,

(05:01):
none of that matters. And it doesn't matter about what
language you speak. It just doesn't. Talent outweighs all that.
And that's what we have in baseball. Baseball is a
true international game and it's played a lot of places
and played well by a lot of guys. And you know,
we look at Otani each year row won rookie to

(05:23):
UNI MVP. It's first year from Japan, Right, how big
of a star was a decy Matt Suey with the Yankees.
They called him Godzilla when he got here, right right,
So I'm good with it, tell you, you know, I
mean it's some people might not be and it's supposed
to be American and Chevrolet and hot dogs and apple Pie.

(05:45):
Baseball is international and we're seeing the best of the
best players on the planet now playing baseball. But I
think it's a shift where it's a stronger international presence.
And I think that's where people seem to have some
resistance because yes, those stars from other countries have always existed,

(06:06):
but you've always had bigger American stars. You know, you
had Sammy Sosa who was Dominican, but you had Mark
McGuire who was American, and he was bigger, and they
made it that way. And now you don't have I mean,
you know, well, you got Trial, you got Bryce Harper,
you got David you got I mean, you got Aaron Judge.

(06:29):
I mean, you're American stars too. I'm not trying to
say yeah, but there aren't, but some bigger ones. Yeah,
the nigger ones right now are Dominican and and you know,
Japanese in terms of Sho Hay and Fernando Tatis Junior
and Vladimir Guerrero Junior. And and uh and I mean,

(06:49):
you just you can't deny these guys. You know, the
talent they are possessing coming up at an early age
is something that baseball wants and baseball needs. But I'm
or they would like for it to be you know more.
I mean, they would like to have more American players
that they can brand in that way. I mean, because

(07:09):
you've had guys that have come and then it seems
like it's just in a flash, they're gone, and it
may be an injury, it maybe whatever the case may be.
But I mean, like a guy like Chris Bryant, he
you know, a couple of years ago, his future looks
so bright. But now the only thing that Joe Buck
was talking about during the All Star Game was how
the Cups are gonna trade him by the end of
the month, you know. So I think that, you know,

(07:32):
it's just a it's a turning point. And I think
Baseball is trying to find their next great ambassador. And
I think that you know, they have tried with Trout,
they have tried with Bryce Harper, and they are superstars,
but they're not the mega superstars that we have grown

(07:54):
accustomed to in prior years. I love the best of
the best. I just love great players, and I get
like Roberto Clemente. I mean, there were other great players
years ago, not as many, and I give you that, Telly.
And they're still American players as well that people look
to and and you know who are stars. But when

(08:15):
you look at Tattoos and what he's done, he's special.
Like the best first one hundred and sixty two games
by anybody who's ever played the game. We're watching that
what old Tani's doing, Babe Ruth did a hundred years ago.
Do you know? Like these aren't just like really good
players who just happened to be from somewhere else. These

(08:35):
are like players we've never seen before. And I think
that's why their talent. Look at you. Have you watched
the games from San Diego and see the crowd and
the energy and then putting the gold chains on each
other when it hit All right, I mean come on,
am I right? Yeah? I mean it was years ago. Yeah,
I mean, and you always looked at that, it looked

(08:58):
at Petco and say, gosh, if they can get a
winner in here, this is a perfect location for a ballpark,
and now they finally have a lot to cheer for.
And I mean, and the future looks so bright and
so like there's so much talk about Tattas Junior that
no one even talks about Manny Machado. There's the stundred

(09:22):
million dollars on the left side of the infield for
the Padres alone, six hundred million. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and
Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. Hey, I'm
John Middlecoff and I host the Three and Out podcast.

(09:44):
Do you like Football? Do you like the NFL? Do
you like the NFL draft? Quarterbacks? Coaches? Well, I talk
about it all on the show. I used to work
for Andy Reid as a scout. Now I give you
my unfiltered and raw opinions on everything that goes on
the NFL. And you know, we're talking college football because
of how important the draft is year round. Listen to
the Three and Our podcast with me John Middlecopp on

(10:06):
the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get
your podcasts. Telly let's talk about Kawhi Leonard. He has
the surgery on the partially touring ACL. If you're the Clippers,
are you giving him a four year max contract to
keep him around? Where are you on this? They made

(10:27):
it to the Western Conference Finals for the first time
in the history of Clippers the Clippers franchise without them,
and remember they even b Utah the last two games
where people thought they were dead after he was injured,
and they got there. Where you, Telly, I think you
absolutely have to give Kawhi that extension. I think he

(10:49):
has proven enough. And you look at the track record
of some of the superstars in the NBA that have
sustains you know, similar injuries or acls or whatever the
case may be, aka Kevin Durant, and look at what
he was able to do after taking the year and
when he didn't take the year off, but using the

(11:10):
year to rehab and come back, and he was back
better than ever, Like he never missed a game. So
I think you unfortunately have to take the time to
allow him to heal. But it was a commitment that
you were making to him and to the city of
Los Angeles and to Clippers fans that Kawhi Leonard was

(11:30):
going to be the face of the franchise, and not
just for a couple of seasons. So I think you
still have to honor and give him that extension. I mean,
because what happened to him that even puts it in
question was beyond his control. I'm with you, and I
don't I don't doubt for one second they'd be in

(11:51):
the NBA Finals if he was healthy. Do you I
do not believe they are in the NBA Finals if
he was healthy. I absolutely no. I don't think they are.
You think they are? Yes, they went to Game six
with the Sons without him. You're saying that they if
he was healthy. I mean, but that's the thing we
always talk about, what would happen if they played. I mean,

(12:13):
you know who they're better? I think they're a better
team with him. I mean team that they pushed him
to six without their best. I mean, he's by far
their best. Well he's their best player, and there's no
doubt about that. And I'm not saying that that discredits anything.
We're just I'm just saying, you never know, it's not

(12:34):
a far gone conclusion that they would have won if
Kawhi Leonard was healthy because you look at just look
at when Chris Paul was out. You know, everyone thought
that the Suns were doomed, but they actually played better
with Campaigne in the lineup. And then when Chris Paul
came back, what happened? They lost? So does that mean

(12:58):
that the Sons are a better team when Chris Paul
is injured? No? Did you see Chris Paul score forty
one points in Game six? Come on, man, I get
I get what you're saying. I mean, yeah, I'm just
saying that. You can't say they were going to be
in the finals if there's no doubt in my mind
that if Kawuhi played, they would have beaten the Suns.

(13:20):
I just I believe that. Anyway, My point is, if
I'm the Clippers, I'm gonna sign this guy. I'm just
going to I mean, you have you know you're gonna
roll the dice and you hope that he rebounds. But
I'm with you. Kevin Duran missed what fifteen months? Did
you see did he look like he missed anytime this year?
When he played? Kd looked like he could just roll

(13:41):
out of bed and give you thirty. So I believe that.
I mean, these guys are superior athletes. They are, they
just can't stay healthy. Yeah, they just can't stay healthy.
But I I mean especially now, I mean, come on, Rob,
they have a you know, plans to build a new
stadium in Inglewood it and I mean like they're dying

(14:02):
for a mister Clipper, a face of a mean of
that franchise. And I mean as much as you know
both Kawai and Paul George being La Natives or nearby
La Natives, I mean, I just don't think that Paul
George is that guy that can be the face of

(14:23):
a franchise. I believe that Kawhi is the guy in
that position or you gotta go with both of them.
But Paul George alone, we just saw, cannot lead this
team to a championship. No, he needs another player. Nobody
can do it by themselves. You know. The NBA is
about having somebody else who also has to be able

(14:43):
to play big. That's what the Bucks are trying to do,
you know. I mean Chris Middleton was a second round pick,
you know, and people don't look at him as a star.
He's a really good player, very good player, but there
are times when he doesn't play very well. But anyway,
I think the Clippers are going to up, you know,
backed up the truck, give him the money, and I
don't see why he wouldn't want to stop. You know,

(15:05):
we sign with the Clippers. They have a good team,
they have a bright future, go to CODE in Los Angeles,
no doubt about it. And you saw that they do
have a coach and TYLEWI be sure to catch live
editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob
Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. I want to

(15:27):
bring Rob g in to talk a little bit and
give us some more details about Richard Sherman because this
doesn't sound good to me, Telly, what was your I
mean just that there's something going on here where his
friends have flown in to check on him, you know

(15:49):
what I mean. So there's something happening, and we know
this guy is a smart guy, Stanford guy, yes, you
know what I mean, and a great football player and
speak his mind speaks a lot of truths. I'm mentor
Richard Sherman. So when I'm hearing these stories and that
he was bitten by a police dog and all this
kind of stuff. It seemed like a lot you what

(16:11):
was your initial reaction when just hearing the story that
he was arrested. I just I felt disturbed. I mean,
because we're talking about a guy that has a lucrative
broadcasting career waiting on him once he decides to retire
from the NFL. Like you said, I mean, well spoken
and well educated guy out of Stanford, vice president on

(16:32):
an NFL Players Association committee. You know a lot of
people go when things off the field we're going on,
they would go to Richard Sherman to you know, get
his opinion and his take on things. And to go
from you know, all of these things to hearing, you know,

(16:53):
the disturbing news of him possibly being in a hidden
run and like you said, you know, friends are flying
out to him to check on him and his well being,
and it just, you know, it just doesn't sound right
coming from a guy that seemed to be very mentally

(17:13):
stable and strong and had it together to you know,
dealing with what are being called personal issues right now.
But I mean, I'm still a type of person that
want to refrain from judgment. I would like to get
more of the information. And I mean just you know,
the getting bitten by a dog, you know, the dog

(17:37):
on his lord leg just came out. So I mean
there's going to be more information that comes out, I'm
sure within the hours and days to come. But yeah,
it's it's disturbing. I mean because when you start to,
you know, think about the mental capacity of NFL players

(17:58):
and guys that have played in the league for ten years,
you know, you start to think about, you know, concussions
and you know, how has that affected them, And because
you know, a lot of people think of a concussion
as you know, he had a concussion, you know, sit
out for a little while and meet to concussion protocols,
and then you come back and you play. But there

(18:20):
are lingering effects and it affects people in different ways.
And just because it's not affecting you now doesn't mean
months and years down the road those concussions may come
up and be a problem. So I'm not saying that
I'm no doctor, I don't know the information on behind it,
but what I am saying is it is disturbing coming

(18:40):
from a guy that has shown absolutely no history of
this sort of behavior. Yeah, and he's a free agent
as well, you know what I mean. The timing is
not right, you know what I mean. And obviously when
you have crisis in your life, nobody's sitting around going, well,
I can't a crisis now because I'm a free agent,

(19:02):
you know what I mean. Crisis just happened, you know
what I mean, right, It just it just happens. But
it just seemed like a lot. I don't know if
Rob can add anything to this. Well, just as part
of a bigger conversation than we talked about earlier. I
know we're gonna get into this here in a second.
But when the news started leaking out earlier today on Wednesday,
you saw the headline, it was Dui and domestic violence.

(19:25):
He's what he's arrested for, right, So when you hear that, right, so,
people immediately were assuming that he had either beaten up
his wife or something like that. And then as more
information started to come out, so he suck very quickly.
There were hardly anybody saying, let's wait till we hear
more stuff, let's let's give Richard Sherman the benefit of
the doubt in this situation. And then as things have

(19:47):
come out more and more. We have a nine one
dispatch from his wife. From everything that it sounds like
he was in more danger to himself than anybody. You know,
he had drank the whole bottle of Hennessey and vodka.
He was threatening to kill himself. Wait a minute, he
did both. Yes, yeah, that's not a good recipe. Hennessey

(20:08):
alone is not a good recipe. But I'm sorry. Yeah,
he was threatening to kill himself. He was saying he's
gonna hang himself. He was he was texting people that
he was saying that if the cops come, that he's
going to fight them because he doesn't care. And so
you can hear the pain in her voice. I know
we'll get a little of the audio a little bit later,
but she's saying, I'm just concerned. Don't shoot when you
get here. We're okay, we're scared, but please get here,

(20:33):
but please right, And that's what it was more concerning,
and so, um, it's it's it's crazy the way that
this whole story has evolved hour to hour, minutes a
minute today. Yeah. Yeah, And that's why I think Rob
that you haven't seen the guys that have been known
him his entire career and life come out and say
anything because we haven't heard from him, and I think

(20:57):
you don't want to go out and defend or say no,
he didn't do this or he's not like that before
you actually hear from him. And so I think, and
you know what I'm gonna say. I'm gonna say this
because tell me I saw that here at the All
Star Game where the Dodgers had five representatives and you
know the whole Trevor Bauer situation, right, sexual assault and everything,

(21:21):
and the details are so graphic. I mean, they just are.
I don't know if you can unsee them, you know
what I mean. I don't I don't know if you
can unsee them. But the players want to talk about
the Dodgers. They're talking about moving on, moving forward, you
know what I mean. Like I think today you almost

(21:42):
have to be careful, you really do before you just
go out and you want to support your your friend
or somebody you know or somebody with teammates, right, but
you gotta be careful today. And I remember you guys
are younger, but I remember when the whole OJ thing
went down, and you know, Bob Costas and people who

(22:05):
had worked with OJ, they they all stood by him,
Like dude, I just I just can't imagine, you know
what I mean, Like there was all support, all support
because nobody could buy into what had happened. And I
think people now as time has gone on, have backed
off of that. I think you brought up a great example.

(22:27):
And obviously this is not a criminal situation. But Ryan
Braun in Milwaukee, Yeah, I think wasn't Aaron Rodgers back,
a Rogers back. I was covering the team at that time,
and Jonathan Lucroix was one of the first that came
out and said, hey, I believe him. You know, uh,

(22:48):
let's wait until we get all the information this, that
and the other, and um, I mean, heck uh. Aaron
Rodgers and Ryan Braun were just a about to open
a restaurant called eight twelve Yes, and and Aaron Rodgers
went on record, and there's there are interviews that said, hey,

(23:13):
you know, Ryan's my guy, and I mean, come on,
he's not like that. He told me he didn't do it,
so he didn't do it. So I don't know if
this is still the case until this day, but Aaron
Rodgers cut off all contact with Ryan Braun after the
truth came out. Of course, the restaurant never came to exist,

(23:34):
but I mean, I mean, come on, you have two
MVPs in the state of Wisconsin, and two of the
most highly regarded athletes to ever play in the state
of Wisconsin, and they were joining forces. And I mean
everybody was filling that back then. But then when that
came out, but I mean, there are so many people

(23:56):
that had to walk back their support, and I think
a lot of people should have learned lessons from that
and don't be so quick to come out and say
what someone did or didn't do.
