s R. You're listening to the Best of The Odd
Couple with Chris Brusha and Rod Harker. I said it
instant Classic Boston one fifteen, Brooklyn one fourteen. I mean
an absolute buzzer beater like j J. Jason Tatum hits
(00:45):
a layup. I mean right before the buzzer rob like
you couldn't have gotten any closer right, And they edge
the nets. So you and I both picked the nets.
So I'm gonna ask you this question. Are you encouraged
or discouraged about your pick? I'm encouraged the nets are not.
(01:07):
I mean, we gotta be realistic. I know everybody thinks.
And my old radio partner Mark Wilson used to say this,
Chris and and I'm with them. You never like how
you lose, right, That doesn't matter if you get blown
out or you or you losing a close game. You
never feel good about how you lose, right, so I
don't look at games like that. They go to Boston,
(01:30):
you hope to split. That's your goal up there, right,
you're in it. You're the Boston's a good team, they're
the favorites. Okay, and ain't gonna be a sweep. It
ain't gonna be easy, Chris, Boston has a better record,
they've been playing well. You gotta go and beat them, Okay,
that's that's the thing. And if you're Boston, you gotta
(01:53):
feel like, man, that was great. We won. But I
would be a little like concern because KD took twenty
four shots to get twenty three points. I don't know
how many nights, Chris, you're gonna have that none. The
turnover last, you know, the Nets turn the ball over.
I mean, there's a few things that you could clean
up and get better. But I still feel like if
(02:17):
you're the Nets, you hate that you lost on the
budger beater, you know, lay up or whatever. But you
gotta feel good like we can win here. This is
not if our guy hits two shots, we win this
game and he didn't. I'm with you, rob um. Look
this is gonna be a battle. You've been seven game series, right, yes,
(02:39):
I mean it's definitely going six or seven. Did Milwaukee
win to lose the first two games, Chris? And they
got blown out terrible in game two and it looked
like the series was over, So I mean exactly. Um,
But if I'm a Nets fan now, they they certainly
gave away an opportunity to steal one and control of
(03:00):
the series. There's no doubt about that. But if I'm
the Nets rob, I'm like our guy, our best player
was bad. We gave grades to day on first things first,
this morning, I gave him an F he was. I
gave Kevin Durant and f No. That was the worst
(03:23):
playoff game game I've seen him play in years. The
only one I could go back to was the Clippers.
Remember the second game in twenty nineteen when the Clippers
were the little Enginette could right and they beat they
beat Golden Stage and everybody was excited. And Katie only
(03:43):
took eight shots, remember that, and the story was what
is he doing? Like? His teammates went to him like, dude,
what eight shots ain't gonna get it done? Right? Right now?
He wasn't bad. I mean, he was five rade, he
scored twenty one point, so he was productive. But I'm
just saying, like that limited amount of production because Robbie
gave you nothing else if you're shut off. But you
(04:07):
remember that that was the game where uh he said
you know who I am, I'm Kevin Durant and then
he had forty the next right, thank you, thank you,
And so maybe he'll come back with that type of outing.
But rob he didn't rebound, he only had four. He
didn't playmate, he only had three assists. His he was
(04:29):
terrible with the ball. I was like, dude, what are
you doing? Like they were stripping him easily. It looked
like he couldn't handle the physicality. I know he can.
And yes, they let some stuff go too yesterday. Yeah,
they let him play like like they let him be physical,
and you know, the Nets called the off the league
(04:51):
office and said can you watch this tape? You can't
do that to our guy now. And and I guarantee
you they'll they'll change a little bit because I think
that they're allowed the Celtics to be Nobody's crying. They
won again of them and they were against though you know,
Boston's gonna be more physical. They're a more physical team.
(05:11):
If if you let him play like that, it's gonna
be an advantage for Boston. No does. They're tougher, no doubt.
But um, I think rob the Nets took their best
shot because you saw it. Boston came out looking to
bully them. In the third quarter, they got up double digits,
the Nets came right back and had a chance to win,
(05:32):
so they could have been run out of the gym, Chris,
after that time quarter serious, Kevin Durant's not having another
game that But I don't think of that bad in
this series. I'm not saying he's going for thirty plus
every night, but I don't think he's having another game now, Chris,
I don't remember twenty three points on twenty four shots.
Is this Dominique Wilkins. I'm just trying to figure it out.
(05:53):
That's unique. And then even on that last play, Durant sleeping,
he was caught sleeping, you know, he was just kind
of no man's land, and they get the past to
Tatum in the layup. So bottom line, here's the other thing.
Rob Al Horford went for twenty He averages ten points
a game. I don't think he's doing that very often.
(06:16):
Marcus Smart, God bless him. He's a terrific defender. He
went for twenty. I don't think he's doing He averages twelve.
And so they got some performances. Jaylen Brown got his
average twenty three, Jason Tatum a little above average with
thirty one. But he does that. I'm not he can
do that. But they got some guys that performed above
(06:37):
their heads. The Nets had guy Steph Curry only nine points.
He was below his game, right the d was below
his game. And they were there, they right at the doorstep.
That's the scary part is that they easily. And I
say that, you know they could have won that game, right,
they could have and they didn't. But I'm with you.
(06:59):
I'm not backing off. We know the NBA playoffs. One
game doesn't mean anything. Nobody's packing up. The Celtics are
supposed to win at home. They were the favorites Chris
by four points of all the game just today. All
the other games were like ten and a half point favorite,
you know, like the home teams was supposed to win
(07:20):
by double digits. That was the only game that was close,
and it was close. And if you got a regular KD,
not even superstar KD, a regular KD. The Nets win
that game. One of the things I would say to
the Nets, and I hope they can break out of it. Kyrie,
who was sensational, what was he eleven four? What was
(07:42):
his uh? I think twelve for twenty for thirty thirty
nine points? He was and he's just he was ridiculous. Yes,
it was just unbelieving. Yet twelve for twenty. But Rob
on the last play, there wasn't much to criticize him
about last play. He went here, Robar, he just dribbled
the ball. It was too much and I think he
(08:02):
was thinking me or k D because if you look
at that play, he had Nick Klaxton in the paint
open didn't go to him. He had he could have
at one point if he had gone left rather than
right against the double team, he would have drawn another defender.
He could have kicked it the Drageice in the corner
four corner three, which is the easiest three. Didn't do it,
(08:24):
and then he got when he got double team. Then
over in the right wing area, Bruce Brown's cutting to
the into the paint open, Kyrie didn't hit him. He
goes to KD. K D kind of has to force up,
you know, a twenty eight foot or whatever it was,
and they lost, or you know that that gave Boston
(08:45):
the ball and they convert and win. So I just think, Rob,
you know, I've always been a proponent. You can put
the head the ball in the hands of your best player,
but the best player or players doesn't have to take
the last shot. Michael Jordan went to Bill Winnington, went
to Steve Kerr. Let John Paxson or Jim Paxson's John
Paxson take the last shot in the finals, like make
(09:09):
the right play. And I thought even any of those
guys I mentioned those role players have a decent shot.
So I just thought it was the hero ball at
the end. The nets don't have to play that, and
they got to learn from nets. Be sure to catch

Podcast or wherever you get your podcasts From Colin Kaepernick,
(10:19):
who is really pushing Rob I'd say harder than we've
seen him push since he's been out of the league
to get back in. He's obviously been out now almost
six years, and uh he is now. You know, he
had to work out at Michigan and he had another
private workout where he threw the football. He was has
(10:44):
spoken and he spoke on Brandon Marshall's podcast I Am
Athlete and also with Chad Ochosenko and Adam Pacman Jones.
And here's what cop Nick said Rob. He said he's
willing to back up a quarterback here he is if
an opportunity presented itself today and they said, we want
(11:07):
to bring you in as the backup. Would you take that? Yeah,
he'll take that if I know I have to find
my way back in. Okay, So yeah, if I have
to come in as a backup, that's fine, but that's
not where I'm That's not where I'm staying. And when
I prove that I'm a starter, I want to be
able to step on the field as such. I just
need that opportunity to walk through the door. All right, Rob,
(11:29):
what are your thoughts on that? I mean that what
he said is how all guys at that level feel
like they can play. I don't care what Chris. If
you're in the NFL and you're the backup or the
third string, a cornerback or safety, you do you believe
you should be out there and you can play. Right.
There's only a handful of situation. I mean, if you're
behind the time, Brady right something where you're like, I'm
(11:51):
not getting out there right where I'm not gonna play.
But anybody else they believe that they can if they
were given the opportunity, Like the guy in front of them,
the other guy, the two guys in front, Chris and
I could do the same thing. I played college by football.
I did this, I did that. I was all all
world in high school. You know what I mean. You
don't make it to that league without having played well
(12:14):
at some point along the path. I just think it's
probably better if he doesn't go into all that. I'm
looking for an opportunity, you know. I think that other
stuff speaks for itself. You don't have to well, yeah,
you know, once I get there, I'm trying to take
over the starting job. You don't have to say all that.
I think that's a given. And we've seen in the NFL, Chris,
(12:34):
and we talked about in a preshow meeting when Seattle
saw Matt Flynn to be their quarterback and Russell Wilson
showed up. They gave Matt Flinn a bowtload of money
because he threw a franchise record six touch styles against
the Lions the last game of the season, right right right,
Matt Flynn. Yeah, And they were like, uh no, Russell
(12:55):
Wilson better than Matt Flynn. And that was the end
of that. And they poured ketchup on that contract, Chris,
and they ate it, okay, And we saw that nicely done.
I know you didn't come up with that. That's original,
is it? They were kids upon that contract. Okay, okay,
I like that. That's pretty good. And the other one was, uh,
(13:15):
Alex Smith and Kaepernick when it showed he showed up
and Jim Harball was like, no, no, no, I know
what Alex Smith can do. He's a fine quarterback. Chris.
I think they might have won a playoff game the
year before Kaepernick showed up and boom, Kaepernick took over
the job out of nowhere. So those things happen when
guys play better. I just think for Kaepernick it should
(13:38):
just be looking for an opportunity to show who I am,
that I can still play this game. I'm a young
thirty hold is he young thirty four? Haven't played in
four years. My body feels good, I can still throw it,
my legs are still good. I think that's the stuff
people want to hear, not I'm going in to take
(13:58):
somebody's job. But he didn't say that, But that he
basically said. He didn't say I'm going to steal somebody's job, right,
you let me in. I'm reckon have it. I'm taking
Tom brady spot. No, he didn't say that, And I
think I think he has a few teams in mind,
and they're the teams with bad or mediocre quarterbacks. So
(14:19):
I get it you think you can go in and
play better than those guys. But I agree, Rob, and
I don't want to see Kylin, Kaepernick, Kyle Tie. I'm
glad he stands tall, but you do need to show
some humility too, because you're in a situation where you're
trying to get back into the league. And I thought
(14:39):
it was good Rob after one of the triots or
not trials, one of the workouts he had where he
spoke and you know at Michigan. It was at Michigan,
remember a couple of years ago when he challenged the owners,
like stop running from the truth and all that. And
I thought that Michigan he struck a much better tone, didn't,
(15:00):
you know again, didn't cole tow, didn't whimper, but just saying, look,
you know, I'm looking for a shot, and bring me
in and see what I can do. That type of thing.
I don't think anybody really wants to hear that. You know, well,
but you know I'm not staying there. I'm not staying
at the backup role. You know, I'm because immediately that
(15:22):
that creates a controversy right away, and nobody you get
them that Chris, the thing that if you asked the question,
would you be willing to take a backup job? And
that's all he could have just he was that, oh yeah,
he asked that, and he could have said absolutely, I've
been out of the game. I miss it terribly. I'm
willing to work my way back in and if I
(15:43):
got to backup, that's what I'll do, and I'll be
the best backup quarterback in the NFL. Right And then
if they say, do you think you can start in
the league again, and You're like, yeah, definitely, I think
when I got a long way to go, yeah, I
think I'll be able to do it. Because remember he
wasn't a star to Rob when he left, No, I mean,
he was a backup when when the whole issue began.
(16:05):
So I I hate to say it robed because I won.
I'd love to see him get a shot. Let's say it.
I think he's good enough. This is clearly a case. Uh.
And I've seen guys talk about this on TV even today,
talking about does he really want to be in the league,
(16:27):
And you know, he's kind of blaming him, kind of
blaming him. And I'm like, look, let's do you whether
you agree with his stance or not. He ain't in
the league because of his stance. It's not it has
nothing to do with his ability. Now, Chris right in
(16:53):
the NFL period of the end, anybody who sits there
and says he, you know, not good enough or even
I think even blames him. Now you can say, oh,
his attitude, he's talking a little too tough and all that,
but he's good enough and he clearly wants to be
in the league again. And he brought up some interest
(17:16):
in Point Drive about you know, the NFL. He said, look,
you got in racism in the end zone. I mean
he wasn't saying it like that, but he wasn't. He
was just saying, today's NFL is more in line with
what I was standing for. They have in racism in
the end zone. They got you know, black lives matter
(17:36):
on helmets and things like that, and they've said they
support players if they kneel, and so what's the issue.
And again, and I like Pete Carroll rod, but why
why Pete Carroll even say some of the things he said,
Because he's talking out of both sides of his mouth. Yea,
and somebody should call him out on it. Chris, I'm
(17:57):
with you. Stop flapping the gums peak cast. Do something.
You know they gave They just signed Geno Smith to
a one year deal. Seven Why I don't think they
have I mean they have room. But they got Drew Locke,
they got Geno Smith. I don't think they're bringing in
Kaepernick now, but Geno Smith really, I mean, Geno's pizzas
(18:19):
better than Geno Smith. At this point, nothing was a
decent backup. Yea, I gave you, but I gave you La.
That's better. That's better than kra Melvin or Wonder because Rob,
they're really not laughing. I'm gonna let you in a
little secret. They're really not laughing. I laughed from the
(18:40):
gut like that was pretty good. Alex's must be on
the bathroom break. He wasn't listening. There's no way he
listened to that. I worked in. Geno's pizza is better
than Geno Smith, and I got zero. When was the
last time Alex you had Ji gizza? There you go,
I think it's been a long time. Actual, that's cardboard pizza, right,
(19:02):
it's frozen that cardboard. Do you eat frozen pizza? Rob, No,
I can't. When I was a kid ate a lot
of frozen pizza. Did you as a kid? My mom
used to buy a lot of it. Yeah, it's not.
It's never as good, no doubt about it as real pizza.
But um, I I rib here's what I'm gonna say.
I hate to say it. There was a time, not
(19:24):
too long ago, I thought he'd get a shot. I
don't think he's getting a shot. Wow, I don't think
do you you know what part of me says no?
But I really thought it was Seattle. I was gonna
say I didn't know about the Geno Smith. If they
didn't sign Geno Smith, I thought he would have gotten
a shot in Seattle. Uh. And like other than that,
(19:47):
I mean, I don't where Carolina probably wants to take
one more look at Sam Donald seems like it, right.
I mean there's talk that they could, you know, go
after Baker. Mayfield will get into that, which makes sense.
I mean they should take a look at him. Why not. Yeah,
we'll see. I mean I don't know. But um but
I don't know where a cap it just. I mean,
(20:10):
he hasn't gotten a try out from an individual team.
All these years he's been calling teams his agent. It's
it's it's unfortunate, man, it really is, because the bottom
line is, and he said it, it's supposed to be
a meritocracy. And you've got guys who've done far worse
than him, who were in the NFL and getting huge anything.
(20:35):
He didn't do anything. I don't care what anybody said.
He didn't do anything. What do he do? He com
he stood up for American Citizens Voice, and then all
of a sudden we saw in twenty twenty all these
people take streets, take it to the streets, Chris pulling
down statues, Antremima and Uncle Ben lost their gigs. I
mean once, oh, all right, it is the arc about
(21:00):
eight seven, seven, ninety nine or five, having a good move.
You you're you're funnier than you. I mean you usually are.
You're you're funnier than usual. Rob. I don't know what
what what you eat this weekend? I know you worked,
you work down some new materials. See you wrote down
(21:21):
some new material I see, all right, comedy special Chris
on Friday on the AM five seventy. So we'll have
it here on the odd couple. I'm doing are you yes,
I'm doing well. I'm told that two seventy five Park
in Brooklyn is an open new comedy club. I was
with one of the guys today who's running it, and
(21:43):
he said, we're about a month away. You know things
how they are. I'm gonna say two months. Yeah, but
I'm I'm read a soft launch. I'm ready ready, Are
you ready? I'm gonna come to New York Brooklyn. It's
a tough crowd. So can you think I'm tough? You
think I'm a tough from Jamaica? Queens? Are you kid me?
What do you think? You know what they say about
man Bottom, what they say about I mean, all right,
(22:08):
it is the eye couple. But I want my wife
to be soft and you know Cutley, but the brothers,
the brothers don't need to be soft and c. Fox

to listen live. In addition to the great competition of
the game, there was another big story that was Kyrie Irving,
who played fantastic at thirty nine points, but he got
into it with the fans ribe and of course he
has a history there. He played there for two years.
It didn't really go well. He told the fans he's
(22:50):
looking to stay if they'll have him. He obviously jetted,
and uh, it's been just a hostile relationship ever since.
And they were going at him, and he went right
back at him, not just with his game but also
with his Uh with some gestures. He gave him the finger,
not once but twice. Maybe if you're getting out at three,
(23:13):
because one time he gave it to him, like with
both hands behind his head. And here's what he had
to say about that. You know, it's nothing new when
I come into this building what it's gonna be like.
But it's the same energy they have for me, and
I'm gonna have the same energy for them. And it's
not every fan. I don't want to attack every fan,
every Boston fan, but you know, when people start yelling
(23:35):
with all this stuff, it's but so much you can
take as a competitor, and you know we're the ones
expected to be docile and be humble and take a
humble approach. Not the best the playoffs, I mean, obviously
you would rather not get involved with the fans and
try to block it out. And I get what he's saying,
(23:56):
you know, just let it roll off your back. You're
you're the professional, you're making millions. They're just in the
stands to see you. Don't let them get under your skin.
And if I'm a coach, that's what I would hope
my players could do, you know, and not get involved
in that. As long as they're not they don't touch you, Chris,
and as long as they're not vulgar or racist. I'm
(24:18):
you know, you can say whatever you want. You gotta
be able to, you know, not let them get to you,
not take you off your game. And obviously he played great,
so it didn't happen. But to get into it with
fans no matter what, just you gotta block it out.
You gotta block it out. You know what Boston is
famous for. They got a you know, certain they feel
(24:41):
a certain way about Kyrie because he came up there
and didn't work out. So they always are gonna be
kind of hostile of things that could have been had
he stayed and you know, and and maybe they would
have won a championship by now, who knows, But they
never feel good I'm just saying, but they don't feel
good about Kaywee, so every chance they get, they try
(25:02):
to get under his skin. He has to be bigger
than that. Look, you can't be flipping off the fans.
You just can't. He will likely get fined by the league,
and he should get fined by the league. Now, I
get that he's upset, and I get you know, I
(25:24):
don't care what situation you're in. After a while, you
get sick of people going at you, and you might
lose it and go right back at him, but you
do have to understand the situation you're in, and so
you can't do it. I don't have a huge problem
with him doing it, Rob, you know, I mean I
wouldn't do it. And then of course he was caught
(25:45):
saying something, you know, a halftime going into the locker
room to some fans. I wouldn't do that. I don't
agree with any of that, but I you know, I'm
not gonna kill him for it. Define him and let's
move on, because you just can't do that as a player.
It's just not good business at all. What I do like, though, Rob,
(26:07):
is the mentality that led Kyrie to do it. That Kyrie.
I think Rob Kyrie is a natural born contrarian. I
think if you if if everybody's going left, Kyrie's gonna
want to go right. Oh you should love playing with
(26:28):
Lebron James. Nah, I don't want to play with Lebron James.
You know, Rob, I'll go this far. If doctor Fouci
and the government was telling everybody do not get vaccinated,
whatever you do, don't take a vaccination, I could see
(26:50):
Kyrie get vaccinated, like I found this magical cure that
works against COVID. Like he's a contrarian. We see it in.
I mean, how many ways does he have to tell
us doesn't want to celebrate? Why not even that you
don't want to celebrate Christ and Christmas? Apparently you're a Muslim.
(27:12):
And I don't say this. I mean I know a
lot of Muslims, Kyrie. I don't think that your Muslims
brothers love you. But this language and all that during Ramadon,
what you're fasting for? If you're just gonna use that
type of language and tell people to do this and
that to you, come on, man, you better than that.
But um, I you know it's one thing if you
(27:35):
don't celebrate Christmas, But why is it a holiday? The
earth is flat? Like he's a contrarian. I don't know, Chris.
I think you're lumping too many things together and you
want to pay him with I don't. I don't. I
don't know if he's just a contrarian just to be
a contrarian. And my pushback to you is, you don't
know what kind of relationship he really had with Lebron
(27:57):
that made him feel like he didn't want to be there.
I don't. Don't think it's just he because everybody else
loves Lebron, he wanted to be opposite. I think that
there was I think that there was some behind the
scenes friction there that caused him where he didn't want
to be around Lebron anymore. Now, I don't I'm not
privy to any I'm not breaking any news here. I'm
just saying I don't. I don't think that you could
(28:19):
just say, no matter what somebody says, he's gonna go
to the other way. Well, I mean, I don't mean
like just everything somebody says he's right, I don't. I
mean it's a little bit overstaked, but I I'm illustrating that.
I think he has a contrarian nature. I really think
he does. There are people, obviously, none nobody goes against
(28:40):
every single thing, all right, I mean, but I think
Kyrie has a contrarian nature, and I think he views
himself as a rebel, and so he enjoys going against
the grain. That's what I'm saying. Whether you agree with
the lebron on analogy or example or not, I think
(29:04):
he's shown enough that he has a contrarian nature. And
that's not always bad, but I think that's what he has,
and I think he loves this situation. I mean, you
saw how well he played. He got He was great
the whole night, but he got better as the crowd
got more and more after him. Rob When he scored
(29:26):
sixty this year, when he scored fifty this year, when
he scored forty three this year, they were all on
the road. He shot forty seven percent on the road,
forty four at home, average more points per game on
the road than at home. The biggest shot of his career,
one of the biggest in NBA history, Game seven at
(29:50):
Golden State on the road. Game five of that series
on the road, he goes for forty one. Like many
of his best games more stuff. What he's gonna fifty
seven at San Antonio. He likes it when there against him,
and I have no Again, I don't. He wasn't right
as how far he took it, But if he can,
(30:14):
I don't. A lot of times you don't want your players,
you know, listening to the crowd or getting into it
with the crowd. But if it makes him better, or
even if he just can still play his game, then
I'm fine with it. Like that's what I've always said
about Kevin Durant on social media, Like, look, you might think,
why is he going at him some random person that
(30:35):
he has no idea who he is on Twitter or whatever.
Well it clearly don't hurt his game, so I don't
have a problem with it. So that's my take on
Kyrie in this situation. And he's not gonna have thirty
nine every night, but I think if the Boston fans
keep going at him, it's gonna fuel him. Now that's
(30:58):
a good point about him being being able to He's
one of those guys I agree with that where some
people thrive off of that, um you know, I used
to I remember Reggie Jackson was one of those guys too.
He played right Reggie like everybody hated Reggie Jackson, like
Kyrie would have no problem playing for the Knicks. He
(31:19):
didn't want to right right, but I don't think he
wanted to deal with the media. Rod, but he would
be able to withstand that pressure. Everybody can't you see
Julius Randalls and doesn't like it now. But I think
kyriekind he was a media dollar in a year ago. Chris,
I mean they were given the Knicks to the NBA Championship. Well,
