Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio. Do not do not,
I repeat, do not touch that dial. You heard the man.
It's time for Fox Sports Sunday. We've got a lot
on the docket tonight, so let's get busy. And on

keeping us glued together. Tonight as usual, we are packed.
(00:49):
We've got Lived Tour PGA updates. Yes, we've got updates.
There's always news. We've got him Mike McCarthy setting you
remember Mike. He's the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
Got what to watch for the remainder of the Major
League Baseball season and some some milestones to watch. Now,
(01:11):
we haven't even gotten a Deshaun Watson decision yet. We
all think it's gonna finally come this week. But who knows.
But I need to lay on for you what a
DeShawn Watson possible appeal would look like. That's where I think, Uh,
the hold up is. I think they're trying to negotiate
something so there's no appeal, But I think both sides
(01:32):
are are firmly entrenched. We'll see if you've got all that.
Plus what kind of brand new fool are you? And
what my name? In the final hour was Chris Prefet's
World of Soccer? But NFL camps are back in business.
The Hall of Fame game between the Raiders and Jacksonville
is next Thursday, So what better time than now to
unpack the following. Just who in the hell is going
(01:55):
to win the ultra balanced and ultra competitive a f
C West. It's time to try to project that. See,
on paper, the f C West is absolutely loaded. There's
really an outside shot all four teams could make the playoffs,
(02:15):
especially when you consider the new postseason format allowing an
additional team from each conference to make it. Now, in
a very quarterback driven lead, the fourth best quarterback in
the division could be the Raiders Derek Carr, who actually,
even though he might be the fourth best quarterback, in
(02:38):
the f C West, He's still widely considered a fringe
top ten quarterback now car would not be the third
or fourth best quarterback and most of the divisions in
the NFL, but this one features two elite quarterbacks in
the Chiefs Patrick Mahomes and the Chargers Justin Herbert and all.
By the way, how could I leave out the Broncos
(02:58):
newly acquired Russell Wilson. He's been an elite quarterback for
most of his career. He had a down season last year,
but he's won a Super Bowl and been to a
second one, and let's face it, the Broncos believe he's
the missing link with the weapons they have now. The
Chiefs were the only team of the four that didn't
really load up their roster with big names in the
off season. In fact, they even lost Tyreek Hill. But
(03:21):
they've won the division six seasons in a row, and
they're coming off an a f C Championship appearance. And
as long as you've got that Andy Reid Patrick Mahomes continuity,
I would say that the chief for my money, I
would not go to sleep on them. Yet we're gonna
get to that in just a second. Now, there's lots
of directions this division could check out him for example,
(03:43):
and fairness, the Raiders, who you know, they could finish
lasting a division and at the same time they could
still have a top five offense and they could win
the division. That's I'm talking about the Raiders. Now, there
are realistic avenues and pass for each team to finish
first as well as finished last. Although the Chiefs I
(04:06):
can't see them finishing last. Now. They did lose a
big part of their quote identity when they treated receiver
Tyreek Hill. Why like the last few years, Hill's ability
to get behind defenses With Patrick Mahomes uncanny ability to
throw the deep ball that absolutely struck fear in the
(04:27):
hearts of defenses and the way you have to prepare
for the Chiefs. No team in the league has seen
more too deep coverage, too deep defenses than the Chiefs.
With Mahomes at the helm, defenses sat back. They absolutely
wanted to take away explosive plays and forced the Chiefs
(04:48):
to be methodical. And even still Chiefs Of won six
straight divisions. Chiefs Of still they got to the SEC
Championship game last year. The next season, here's the question, Well,
defenses continue to give them too high looks without Hill
because they still fear Patrick Mahomes or more one high
looks because they aren't quite as afraid of the Chiefs receivers. Now,
(05:10):
I happen to think that the Chiefs still have a
very solid receiving corps with Juju Smith, Schuster, Marcus Valdes, Scantling, McCole, Hardman,
and of course Rookie sky More out of Western Michigan
who can really fly. And oh yeah, did I mentioned
Travis Kelsey still one of the best tight ends in
the league, if not the best, but frankly he might.
(05:34):
He might see more bracketed coverage this year without Tyreek
Kill in the lineup. So if the Chiefs continue to
see those two deep looks, I think you'll see Smith,
Schuster and Kelsey and more. They'll just work the short
game and create after the catch, which they're all very
capable of of doing. But if defenses start challenging the
chief receivers well you know, press coverages, et cetera, can
(05:59):
they win those one on one battles as consistently as
Hill did? Now, Chief's running the ball with traditional runs
rather than run pass options in which Mahomes you know,
can choose the option to pass more often. Well, that
doesn't seem like the easy answer to the two high defenses.
The Chiefs, they certainly have a very good offensive line,
(06:20):
I believe Orlando Brown, Joe Thuney, Creed, Humphrey Tray Smith.
But last season the Chiefs they would run the ball,
you know, pretty well for stretches, but then for some
reason they go away from it. So they're gonna try
to force defenses to be structured and worry about the
proper run fits. That's gonna limit some of the exotic
(06:41):
looks that get thrown at the Chiefs defensively. But Patrick
Mahomes is still Patrick Mahomes, and he'll be able to
create plays outside of structure. Give it to the man.
He's transcendent. Okay, not everybody can do that. He's like
watching Roberto Clementi hit or Hank Karen. There maychanics weren't
the same, but they were from other planets. They were
(07:02):
that good. Sells Mahomes Right, you can throw those exotic
looks at my Homes. He's probably gonna figure it out.
He's gonna create players outside of structure. But again, and fairness,
as the Chiefs learned last season. They can't totally live
on Patrick ma homes ability to create. He's going to
need help and without a true number one receiver, it
seems like the run game is going to be a
(07:24):
bigger part of the offense this year. But the question is,
well Andy Reid commit to doing it more often now. Defensively,
that's offensively for the Chiefs. Defensively, the Chiefs lost edge
rusher Melvin Ingram and cornerback Chivarius Ward. They used their
first there there there there two first round picks to
(07:44):
replace both players. They got Trett McDuffie from Washington. Because
McDuffie doesn't have the elite size or speed Scott's projected
into play Nickel, but he he's probably going to be
a corner at that will start there. And and I
think Ingram, you know, provided the Chiefs with a much
(08:06):
needed physical presence when he was acquired, um you know
from I'm talking about Melvin Ingram when he was acquired
h via trade mid season. Now to replace him, the
Chiefs got a study out of Purdue George Carl Loftus.
He's a he's a terrific pass rusher. If you haven't
seen him play, he's a game wrecker. They got him
with the thirty pick. He's a very physical power rusher.
(08:29):
He only had five sacks his final college season. But
I think he's a project that could be Really he
was not a project. I think he's gonna play a
lot um he doesn't. Here's the thing about a guy
like George Carl Loftus. If you saw Produe play it
all last year, he doesn't have to finish with a
high sack total to make an impact. Ingram only finished
(08:51):
with one sack as the Chief but he was disruptive
and he was very good against the run, and he
allowed Chris Jones to stay inside. So McDuff and Karloftis
are young, but to be playing integral roles for a
team that I still think has championship aspirations. People are
poo pooing the Chiefs. I wouldn't go to sleep on
the Chiefs. They are I think, still the favorite to
(09:13):
win the A s c US. Then there are the Chargers,
who are the most aggressive team in the division in
terms of adding talent. They traded for Khleio mac to
pair him up with Joey Bosa, and they got the
best free agent corner on the market. And j C. Jackson.
Last season, the Chargers struggled and run defense, going from
their former defensive coordinator Gus Bradley's single gap system to
(09:36):
Brandon Staley's gap and a half system, and in bradley
scheme defensive lineman they're asked to flat field and Staley's
they gotta hold their gap and play with more control,
so they've got to adjust. The Chargers didn't have enough
size and strength to hold up, but the offseason they
added defensive lineman A Sebastian, Joseph Dave, Morgan Fox and
Austin Johnson. These guys, what's the reason I'm giving you
(10:00):
names because they have experienced in Staley system and Johnson
finished last season with seventy two tackles. Additionally, Mac He's
a very elite run defender. So the biggest concern with
this defense is edged depth. Now. Joey Bosa misses a
lot of games. He's missed eight He's missed eight eighteen
games in his six year career, and last season, uh
(10:22):
Khalil Mack tried playing through a foot injury but had
to have surgery missed the final games of the year.
They're gonna need him to be healthy. Kyle Van Noig,
who has been around the league, was originally drafted by
the Lions. How a b y U ends up with
the New England Patriots, he can resurrect his career. Compare
him up with second year player Chris Rump, who was
a fourth round pick. Those give the cheat the Charger's
(10:43):
depth at those positions. Not either Joey, Bosa or Matt
continues to miss time Khalil Mack, the pass rush is
gonna take a significant hit without a consistent interior rush
or However, with the upgrades the Chargers made on the
defensive side of the ball, Hall and Staly's defensive system,
I do not think this year and unless they have
(11:06):
major injuries, the Charger system is going to be a
defensive liability. So we've talked about the Chiefs on both
sides of the ball. We've talked about the Chargers defensively.
Coming up, we'll talk about the Chargers defensively and we'll
get to the other two teams in the division, the
Raiders and the Denver Broncos. I'm Bernie Frouno Comedy Live

We will take you up to three and Pacific tonight sixty.
I'm Eastern breaking down the a f C West got
through the Chiefs offensive defense just got through the Chargers defensively,
in which I think they'll be very much improved if
they can stay healthy offensive Charge. Offensively, the Charger's biggest
(12:53):
weakness the last couple of seasons, frankly has been their
offensive line. But last season they drafted offensive line I'm
gonna did pretty well. They exceed the expectations. They played
like elite players, their left guard, their left tackle for
Shawn Slater, Matt uh Feeler, Corey Linsley. They have come
on and they are poised to improve, and they've players
(13:15):
that could be among the best at their position in
the league. This season, the Charges also drafted a gentleman
named Zion Johnson, who many consider to be the top
left guard in the draft now if he pans out,
the only week spot would be right tackle. With the
elite pass rush in the s C West, when you've
got teams like you know that can that can get
after the quarterback at the Raiders, you've gotta have reliable
(13:38):
offensive tackles. The only times that uh Justin Herbert struggled
it was often because the pressure was unrelenting from the
right side. So right tackle was a problem in the past,
but it's easier now for their offensive coordinator, Joe Lombardi
the scheme around that because it's no longer a position
of concern. So the Chargers, frankly, now that they've beefed
(14:01):
up their offensive line looked like one of the more
complete teams on paper overall. Or let's get to the
Las Vegas Raiders, because they are a flashpoint, certainly here
in Las Vegas and certainly in the National Football League.
Let's start with some facts. The Raiders have arguably one
of the best receiving corps in the league. After they
traded for Davante Adams. They team him up with Darren
(14:22):
Waller and Hunter Renfrow, who's a stud and I think, uh,
Davante Adams while he was in Green Bay saw the
highest double coverage rate last season in the eight years
that stats like this have been have been compiled. Despite that,
Adams was one of the most productive receivers in the league.
Now he did have a Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers
(14:45):
throwing to him right now in the Raiders offense, I
don't think Davante Adams is going to have to work
us hard to get open because if he gets or
or if he gets doubled, Darren Waller is going to
see more one on one coverage. That's a problem. And
if defensive is played cover seven and Brackett both of them,
then Hunter Renfro is going to see one on one
with a lot of space to work with. And I
(15:06):
am telling you Hunter Renfrow is worth the price of admission.
He's an absolute treat to watch. He's an absolute gamer,
and he's got an extension. Now. You could argue that
Derek Carr was a little too conservative throwing the ball
in the past, but he's increased his aggressiveness in throwing
the ball downfield in the last couple of seasons. In
the last two years, Derek Carr increased his air yards
(15:27):
per attempt to eight point two, which is twelve in
the league. Car has also been much better playing under
pressure since he had that terrible broken leg back in
though he's still been better to create an outside of structure.
It's really not Derek Carr's strength. The Raiders offensive line, unfortunately,
(15:49):
was one of the worst pass blocking units in the
league last season, and they didn't really make any significant
additions through free agency. So if you're going to have
a real question mark about the Raiders this year, you
look straight to the offensive line. There's no question that'll
be the biggest question mark for the offense. Their guard
Denzel Good, He's coming back from tearing his a c
(16:12):
L in Week one last season. He'll help, but the
Raiders are frankly going to need a big year out
of last year's first round draft pick Alex Leatherwood out
of Alabama. There's hope that he makes a giant leap
in his development. And I'm hearing reports that he took
reps from the first team, the second team, and the
(16:33):
third team in practice this week. Now, why would he
be doing that. I can't say that's a good sign.
Last year, Alex Leatherwood had a rough, rough goal of
a tackle. After Week four, the coaching staff kind of
moved him inside to guard and frankly, he didn't light
it up there either, But he didn't prove towards the
(16:56):
end of the season. He's a big study out of Alabama.
The Raiders are giving them a chance to compete right
tackle again. But if and you know it's and if
if Alex Lettherwood doesn't pan out, then they'll they'll sub
them with Brandon Parker. When fortunately gave up nine sacks
and thirteen games last season, and so the Raiders have legitimate,
genuine issues on their offensive line. Another new head coach,
(17:19):
Josh McDaniels and his staff, they seem to believe that
with better coaching they can fix the Raiders offensive line wills,
but they're gonna have to be considerably better as pass
protectors and run blockers because the Raiders have the offensive weapons,
but the offensive line is what makes your offense go,
and you all know that. Defensively, no doubt about. The
(17:44):
Raiders already had one of the best pass rushers in
the league in Max Crosby, and now they pair them
up to create quite a duel as Chandler Jones comes
over from Arizona. But outside of the pass rush, again,
there are a lot of question marks on defense, and
the biggest area of concern is the secondary. They have
a second year safety name r Von Morrig and their
(18:06):
nickelback Nate Hobbs. They look like they could develop into
leaders on the defense and become potentially elite players at
their position. And they have a veteran corner and Rocky
sin You gotta love the name. He's a good player too.
He was acquired via trade. He's solid. However, their other
starting corner, Trayvon Mullin, had foot surgery in the offseason.
(18:28):
He's currently on the Physically unable to Perform list, So
the Raiders defensively feel a little unsettled now. They're strong
safety Jonathan Abram. He had a good season playing in
Gus Bradley system as a box safety, but now there
are questions if he's a fit and their current defensive
coordinator Patrick Graham system. Graham He's always adjusted his scheme
(18:51):
to fit his players and the players he has available,
and he's willing to use multiple schemes. But and so
I don't think he's just gonna sit and cover three
for a majority snapped. But the question is can Abraham
play man or deep half when he asked when he's
asked to do so, Abraham has not shown he can
do either one of those, you know, particularly well so
(19:14):
far in his career. That's that's not to say that
can't change. But again, he's on charted waters here, so
there's a chance. There's a chance. Darn Harmon, who has
experienced playing in the Raiders Patriot system in the past,
so plants Abraham, but he's thirty one years old. Overall,
the Raiders have some elite talent in high impact positions,
(19:36):
but they seem to lack death everywhere else. So when
it comes down to who's going to win this division
and I'm gonna get to the Broncos, it's just a
second after Kevin figures an update. You see a theme here.
You see that you've got quarterbacks galore, Patrick Mahomes, but
(19:58):
he no longer has Tyreek Hill, but they've won the
division six years in a row, and he has plenty
of other weapons. You've got Justin Herbert, but they have
to make sure their offensive line issues are fixed. And
the Chargers also, they've got to stay healthy on defense.
And by the way, Derwin James, he's not in camp,
but still the Chargers will go, I believe as Justin
(20:21):
Herbert goes. And then of course the Raiders. Here's a
real chance for Derek Carr to have that kind of
breakout season that translates two wins in the playoffs. When
you look at their offensive weapons Darren Waller, Davante Adams,
hounter Renfro, defenses are going to have to decide who
do we double, because if you double one of those guys,
(20:44):
you leave the other ones alone. And look, there's no guarantees.
I just told you how sensational Davante Adams was in
Green Bay playing with a Hall of Famer, And make
no mistake, Derek Carr and Davante Adams were sensational at
Fresno State together for real numbers. It was a decade ago,
so maybe that decade off won't have hurt them. But again,
(21:08):
they're gonna get on the field and we'll see how
that pans out. Because in the National Football heaguets, the
old joker's not for long. If you don't make adjustments,
people will adjust on those two and then they'll have
to determine how they adjust back. And it all falls
under Josh McDaniels, the first year coach, who unfortunately comes
from the Bill Belichick coaching tree, which is an exactly
(21:30):
stellar when you start to look at the win loss records.
Coming up, we're gonna talk about the Denver Broncos and
their new offense around a guy by the name of
Russell Wilson. Will they let Russ Cook? Yeah, I believe
they will. And man, he's gonna have the weapons. Where
will the Broncos how will they fare in the FC West.
We'll talk about that coming up at first. Let's go
(21:50):
back to Kevin Figures with the latest take. Kevin. All right, Bernie,
we will start at UFC two seventies seven. Amanda Nuna
is dominating Juliana Pania, winning by unanimous decision to reach
after the Bandson weight title that she lost top last December.
In baseball Showo Tani hit a three run home run
and the Angels had a five run fit or five
run eighth inning. I should say they defeated the Rangers
(22:11):
nine to seven. Aaron Judge it his two hundred career
home run as the Yankees dominated Kansas City eight to two.
It was Judges MLB HI Forties swond long ball this year.
The Rockies defeated Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers five to three,
snapping l A's three game winning streak. Carlos Carrasco's pitched
seven scoreless innings, and Francisco Lindora had a home run
as the Mets shout out the Marlins for nothing. Twins
(22:31):
handed Joe musk Grove his fourth consecutive loss with a
seven to four win over San Diego. Brewers beat Bollston
nine to four as former Red sod hunter Renfro went
deep wins for Toronto, Atlanta, and Philadelphia and golf Tony
Female tied for the lead at the PGA event in Detroit.
Henrik Stinton has a three stroke lead at the live
tournaments in New Jersey. Back to Bernie Freddo. Okay, thanks
(22:52):
so much, Kevin, appreciate that, buddy. Let's talk about the
Denver Broncos and uh, you know a lot of people
I trust think if you have a gun to your head,
who's gonna finish first, It's going to be the Chiefs.
Who's gonna finish last, It's gonna be the Broncos. But
we shall see. Okay, these are based on projections and
(23:12):
based on a lot of other factors. But number one
question for the Broncos how do you build an offenser
on Russell Wilson. On the surface, it may not seem
like a difficult problem, considering Wilson has been an elite
quarterback for most of his career. But now he's got
a new head coach, Nathaniel Hackett, and the Broncos have
gonna have to figure this out. New head coach, new quarterback,
(23:33):
new system, Now, Russell Wilson has always been productive, but
the Seahawks never consistently really struck the right balance. And
I think you could see everybody could see that Russell
Wilson became increasingly frustrated and never consistently struck the right
balance until finally he wanted out and he was traded. Now,
(23:56):
there were times when the Seahawks ran the ball and
took the ball oddo Wilson's hands too much. That's Pete
Carroll style. And they were right to attempt to threaten
defenses with a run game and forced him to keep
an extra defender in the box. Because in Wilson's three
most efficient seasons as a passer the Seahawks, the Seahawks
(24:18):
had a top ten running game in terms of expected
points added. So you use the run to set up
the pass. Now, Russell Wilson's a quarterback who likes to
attack the sideline. He doesn't throw much to the middle
of the field. Specifically, he has a bit of a
difficult time against Cover two. A Cover two is his
own defense. Right in the last few years, Wilson's throwing
(24:41):
four interceptions to five interceptions against Cover two. But when
defense is put an extra defender in the box and
receivers have more one on one opportunities outside. That's where
Russell Wilson wants to attack. Fortunately, the Broncos have one
of the league's best young running backs. They've actually got
a duel Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon, the third out
(25:03):
of Wisconsin. But they'll have to run the ball more
efficiently than they did last season because Denver only had
the twenty three ranked Russian attack. Now, the Broncos staff
believes their offensive line is more suited to run outside zone.
If they're right, Wilson will enjoy the benefits of play action.
He'll be able to do what he enjoys most, throw bombs.
(25:26):
Play Actually, if you've got the running game and you
can sell it, you can sell it. Quarterback drops back.
Looks like he puts the ball in the running backs belly.
Defensive backs, linebackers need to read their keys. They don't
want to get caught all of a sudden. Wilson sets
up play action, he throws a bomb. He's good at that.
(25:47):
And make no mistake, the Broncos have some burners and
Jerry Judy kJ Hamler. They have three or four guys
at Russell Wilson can get the ball to Now. Defensively,
the Broncos has some star power and they have us
solid roster overall. You have a free safety by the
name of Justin Simmons. He's widely considered the best in
the NFL in this position, and they have a second
(26:09):
year quarterback and Patrick's artan son of a obviously great
player in the NFL in the past. He's a rising star.
So there isn't a little hell of a lot to
worry about with defensive depth. And if you're nitpicking, the
biggest concern is the Vic Fangio's leaving. He's been one
of the best defensive play callers in the league for
(26:30):
a long time. Now you replace him with the first
year defensive coordinator. I don't even know the guy's name.
I think it's a Giro Verro. I don't even know
if I if I pronounced it right. But you gotta
fill some big shoes with with Vic Fangio. So who
wins the division? I think the odds are still very
(26:53):
much in favor of the Chiefs. The Chiefs. You got
the Chiefs Raiders charges of Broncos, right, but only two
are cansidered heavy favors to win the division, and and
and the Chiefs won the division last year. They were
twelve and five, but they didn't really dominate the division
from week one like they've done in the past. Remember
they started out three and four, but they figured it out. Now,
(27:14):
the Raiders were the best, second best team in the
division last year ten with tenants seven. They had to
win four games down the stretch to get into the playoffs.
But that that unit, you know, Rich Pisacci, has gone,
and I think there are different They feel like a
different organization with with respect to their d n A
from the ground up. But the Raiders were tenants seven
the Charge over nine and eight. It was a very
(27:35):
tough battle between the Raiders and Chargers. But in the end,
I think last year, justin Herbert's experience inexperience check that
took the team out of the playoff hunt. Now I
think the odds are in favor for the Chiefs and
it's highly likely in my opinion, that the Chiefs win
the f C West. I agree the Chargers showed something
(27:56):
special during the one season. If they can manage to
fix their offensive and defensive line issues and their coach,
I don't dislike Brandon s Daley, but he went too
crazy too goofy. I believe with the analytics plays. I
believe analytics have a place there, their guidelines. They're not
an inflexible anchor. They're a guideline. And he if you
(28:17):
live by the sword, you die by the sword, and
that's what they did, right. Chargers gotta still fix their
offensive defensive lines and I think they need to get Derwin,
James and Camp and Poy On paper that roster with
an up and Coomer like justin Herbert Man, do they
look scary? I think the Chargers could really certainly be
a playoff team. I don't know if they're gonna win
(28:38):
the division. Remember, each each conference gets an extra playoff
team and so you don't have to win the division.
And we've talked about this. It's not out of the
room of possibility that all four teams in the a
f C West make the playoffs. Do I think that's
gonna happen. No. The case of the Raiders is something else.
They still have a quarterback with enough experience. The team
is loaded with enough talent to win the division or
(29:00):
at least fight for a wild card. Pass the Broncos
are getting a lot of attention from the media. That's
something that could play against the Raiders. So bottom line,
what happens. I think the Chiefs landed about twelve wins
this year. I feel like the Raiders are gonna be
nine and eight. I feel that the Chargers will be
like ten and seven. I think the Broncos are gonna
be Bronco fans may not want to hear this, but
(29:21):
I think they're gonna check in somewhere around eight and nine.
These are just opinions and still very early. You can
prove me wrong. I would just say that in a
in a division that's is loaded and as competitive as
the f C West, um, it's gonna be very difficult
here on July one, two. When you consider how loaded
(29:47):
the f C West is, and there's a shot all
four teams can make the playoffs with the new format,
that's hard to really handicap who actually wins the division.
We're almost splitting hairs right there. And again I mentioned
that you've got a talented quarterback in Las Vegas and
Derek Carr. He might be considered a top ten quarterback
in the league, fringe top ten. He might be the
(30:08):
fourth best, fourth best quarterback in the f C West.
It's gonna matter all right. And again, the Raiders added
Pro bowlers and Chandler Jones. Denver added Pro bowlers in
Russell Wilson. The Chargers added Khalil Mack. The Chiefs lost
Tyreek Hill, and that may change how teams defend them.
The Chiefs were the only one of the four that
(30:29):
didn't load up the roster with big names. But they've
won six in a row, and they've got the continuity
with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. You've got a new
coach in Denver, in a new quarterback. You have a
new coaching in here in Las Vegas, and I think
you know even though you return Brandis Daley and you
return um Justin Herbert. Of course, with the Los Angeles Chargers,
(30:55):
there's just a lot of uncertainties, are like I said,
especially between the offensive and defensive lines. If you're curious
from a betting standpoint, do you over under for wins?
Interestingly enough, for all three or for three to four
teams in the f C West, it's ten and a half. Broncos, Chargers,
(31:16):
Chiefs all ten and a half. The Raiders are bringing
up the Weir at eight and a half. Now, let's
give this some perspective. The Chiefs have the shortest price
on the board to go over ten and a half
wins at plus one fifty five, which means they're more
likely to do it. The Chargers are plus two thirty.
What that means, you bet a hundred, you win two
hun thirty. But the Broncos, even though they're win total
(31:36):
ten and a half, I would say this that you
know the longest odds, Well, actually they're plus two sixty.
The Raiders are plus six fifty to go over eight
and a half, So they're not getting a lot of love.
The Raiders are not getting a lot of love from
the bench, you know, from the betting markets. Here. The
(31:57):
final thing to note in terms of trying to ascertain
who's gonna win the a f C West is that
each team will have the following six games against divisional opponents,
four interconference games versus the a f C South, four
enter conference games against the NFC West, and one game
against an NFC South team with a similar win loss
(32:20):
record from the previous season. Now, since we are here
in Las Vegas and they seem to get mostly attention,
I kind of want to focus on them for a second,
because people I trust in the betting markets have acknowledged it.
Even after winning ten games, the Raiders frankly are projected
to take a step back. They've got a winning total
UH the win loss total in terms of the betting
(32:42):
markets of eight and a half over under of eight
and a half. Perhaps the logic UH is that considering
the f C West got stronger the arrival of Russell Wilson,
et cetera. However, the Raiders they also improve in the
off season because they pick up Davante Ada. But you
got a first year coach and a new front office.
There's a lot of expectations. And even though that you
(33:05):
know Davante Adams is joining a couple of other key
free agent acquisitions like Chandler Jones and another offensive defensive
or another defensive tackle they picked up along Nichols, and
the Raiders didn't have a Remember the Raiders didn't have
a pick in the first two rounds of the draft
this year and UH, and they finally in the fourth round.
I thought they got a nice They grabbed Georgia running
(33:27):
back Zamir White. I thought that was a nice pick,
uh for the Raiders. But the truth of the matter
is the four non divisional games will be critical for
the Raiders win total. Should they go over eight and
a half, I think so, but I don't think by
a lot. So I think this is gonna be very dicey.
And again, you've got Russell Wilson and Denver. They solidified
(33:49):
their offensive line. You you got the Chargers, you know,
everything on the line for a possible playoff birth they
fell short last year. Remember in Week eighteen they was
thirty five to thirty two. I think the Chargers may
have grown up in that game too, and it will
be interesting to see what adjustments their coach, Brandon Staley
can make in his second year. The perception he said
(34:10):
he was too stubborn to deviate from his principles as
a rookie head coach, and he's gonna have to make adjustments.
They did pick up Khalil Mack And then again I
think the Chiefs, Yes, you do lose Tyreek Kale, but
you still got Jujus, miss Schuster, Marquess, Valdes Scantling, you
still got Travis Kelsey, and I would say the Chiefs
(34:32):
are still the team to knock off in that division.
We shall see. That's why they played the games on
the field, not for nothing. You may not know this.
There's a certain movie that is the highest grossing baseball
movie of all time. I just had a thirty year anniversary.
Why do I bring this up? Something's coming up on
TV and I'll tell you what that is. I'm Bernie
(34:54):
Fratte Company. Laugh in the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Stick and stay. You're listening to Fox Sports Sunday and
Fox Sports Radio. We're back on Fox Sports Sunday, Fox
Sports Radio. I'm Bernie Freddo company a Live from the
Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. Take up to three
and Pacific, six am Eastern. Man, we're just getting started,
about an hour and ten minutes away from the dance
(35:15):
Sensation and sweep in the nation. That would be what
kind of brand new fool are you? Followed by what
my name? And then of course two thirty Pacific, five
thirty eastern Chrispoa fetes World of Soccer. We've got some
l I V. Golf Tour stuff to get to. Mike
McCarthy stepped in front of the microphoning in this week.
That's never a good thing. Dallas Cowboys head coach, So
(35:37):
I gotta get into major league baseball stuff. And what
would it look like, By the way, if DeShawn Watson appeals.
They hasn't even you know, we don't even know what
is suspension is going to be yet. But this is
still on the table, so we get a lot of
stuff to get to. You know, if you've heard it once,
you've heard it a million times. It's one of the
most over overrated what I would consider to be movie
(35:59):
lines of all time. There's no crying in baseball, right
But there's a website that ranks the top movie lines,
and it's it's way up there. And somehow the movie
that that was in with Tom Hanks and Madonna and
right on down the line, uh a league of their own.
Believe it or not, that film just had its three anniversary.
(36:24):
I believe right there, it's coming up or it's right
around this time, and somehow the legacy is as strong
as ever. It's still like I said, and I didn't
know this. It's the highest grossing baseball movie of all time,
and again maybe the most quotable because of the no
crying in baseball line. But it's my understanding. In August
(36:45):
um the material that was sourced from creating this movie
is going to take on a whole new life of
its own when quote the title League of their Own
is reimagined and it becomes a streaming series on Prime
video and the original movie. I'm not one of the
people who loved it that much, but it remains Apparently
(37:08):
the followers of this movie are very devout. And it's
because of the way that it chronicles the real women's
professional league that was put into the Rockford team and such,
and those ladies could really play, uh, and that that
was really something. Because here's a history behind the film. Um,
(37:29):
the A A G. P B L. It was the
believe it or not. You know who came up with it.
It was the famous chewing gun magnet and you know
baseball executive Philip Wrigley of Wrigley Field, famed Chicago. He
actually thought a league of women might be very successful
(37:50):
while the men's player pool was so depleting during World
War Two. That's how this all started. And it launched
in n and then frankly outlasted the war. Are it
kept going? I think it folded in the mid fifties,
like nineteen fifty four, and uh, at one point they
had ten teams in the league, and they actually drew
(38:12):
almost a million people in before ultimately folding. Like I said,
nineteen fifty four, another Rockford Peaches and the South Bend
Blue Sox. They were the only two teams to play
in the league from start to finish. Those are two
very successful franchises. And if you remember the movie, it
was sort of chronicled the Rockford Peaches. Now, for many
(38:34):
of the players and the girls who had a chance
to watch them, Women's professional baseball frankly was life changing
because you know, it actually became something that found its
way into main stream culture. So now years go by,
decades go by, it's sort of really sort of faded
(38:54):
into the sunset. But the collective memory of the league
has also begun to fade. But if you are so inclined,
we always know. And by the way, you know, for instance,
Hard Knocks is coming up here. Our beloved Detroit Lions
will be featured in Hard Knocks, and I don't I
don't see that. Facetiously, I really believe Dan Campbell He's
(39:15):
going to make that team competitive. I think the Lions
could win eight games this year. I do. I'm not
they're overrunder six and a half. But you develop affections.
And you know, I covered the Lions, did part of
the previous part of the pre and post broadcast team
from eight, and I still always keep my eye on
that team. Uh. That's why I had such strong opinions
(39:38):
on Matt Stafford last year. I get it. Most of
the years he was there, they weren't very good. But
three of the years they were very good and they
still couldn't win. But I digress. The bottom line is
the League of their own turns thirty this year. There
is no crying in baseball because of its deep roots.
There's going to be a series on Prime video streaming
coming up sooner rather than later. Coming up. Can the
(40:01):
l I V. Golf Tour and PGA Tour COO exists harmoniously?
We'll discuss keep it locked right here on Bernie Fratto.
This is Fox Sports Sunday. The Fox Sports Sunday train
keeps rolling right along. I'm Bernie frattawere Comedy Alive from
the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. We'll take up
to three and Pacific six am Eastern. Just getting started,
(40:25):
two down, two to go. Plenty of stuff left in
the show. You heard Kevin figures update there on the
l I V Tour leaderboard, somebody's names signed from Meyer,
Hendrik Stenson, Dustin Johnson, Patrick read those are your top three.
You get down the leaderboard lead Westwood tied for six.
(40:45):
Charles Schwartzel, who won the inaugural event in London, collected
a cool fom point seven million after only collecting three
million the final four year the last four years on
the on the PGA Tour, Martin Kamber, Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter.
The list is getting longer, Brooks kepka Um. There is
(41:07):
Louis Eustasen Bryson d Shambo. All right, so there's nine
of the top forty and the LV announced that is
expanding to a four team league event with over four
hundred million dollars and prize purses. By the way, with
Dustin Johnson now joining the LV. To remember he was
(41:28):
once franked number two in the world. Where am I
going with this? Okay? Remember my AFL comparison several weeks
ago when the a FL came upon the scene and
the NFL scoffed at them, and then Al Davis, who
assumed the role of Commissioner temporarily. Uh. They developed the
(41:49):
war chest and they went after the NFL's best quarterbacks,
John Brody, Roman Gabriel, several big stars with big money.
And does it sound from Aaron by the way, Charles
Barkley apparently he is not going to the l V tour. Um, well,
they didn't offer him anything. Yeah, I guess he's not
gonna go with they don't offer him anything. Um, I'm
(42:11):
starting to wonderful. And we all love Charles Barkley, right,
he's not tourable. That golf springs turrible. It looks like
he's trying to kill a snake in a phone booth.
But Charles puts butts and seats and everybody loves Charles,
and I believe he's making I don't know, with all
of his modalities, twenty million a year, So I don't
know what he was expecting to be offered. But I
also heard that Gary McCord will join David Ferrety. Um
(42:35):
as it is perhaps and again it's not official, but
now they're they're developing a better broadcast team, and I
feel like a TV contract is around the corner, and
all of a sudden, now the l V is in
vailing your plans for the announced last Wednesday, they will
they will allowunce they will launch the l I V
(42:56):
Golf League, which will feature forty eight players on twelve
established enfranchises. They're gonna go compete for a four hundred
five million dollar total prize pers over a fourteen tournament schedule. Now,
they haven't settled the dates and locations for the league,
and that's going to be revealed at a later date.
But you're also going to see an expansion of their
(43:16):
global footprint across the Latin America's North America, Asia, Australia,
the Middle East, and even Europe. And LV said schedule
will not compete with Golf Swarm Majors or any international
team events or heritage events, so they're not going to
try to go head up with the Ryder Cup or
(43:36):
the Masters, are the US Open any of that. They
have released a statement saying they want quote the best
players in the game will always be able to make
their own choices about where to play. They don't want
that kind of conflict. Apparently now with the LV Golf
expanding their global platform, it's gonna add a new dimension
to the golf ecosystem. As it were, and it's it's
(43:57):
going to continue to provide opportunities for airs and fans
around the world to experience this. Now they don't have
a TV contract yet, I believe they will, but again,
be careful what you wish for. You saw a very
disheveled Phil Nicholson who's tied for forty if he either
forgot how to play golf, or the or the or
the pressure is getting to him. But this is the
(44:17):
price you pay if you if you're going to go
down this road. I'm not judging anybody. I'm on record
saying I wouldn't do it. But if you're gonna go
down this road, you have to take what comes with it.
And I know that David Ferrety already he already you
know he's a funny guy, and he already launched his
first ever sort of funny as it were. Uh, when
(44:40):
he was asked this past week, how do you feel
about all of these big time golfers nine of the
top forty that have come over from the PGA. Now,
I don't even mentioned Graham mcdonoman and to go among
the other names I mentioned, And David Ferrety barked back.
He says, well, I guess their lives are all their
lives are all happy, like with all this money coming in,
so U you know, golf, the IVY Tour. I think
(45:03):
it's disruptive right now and we're gonna see what's gonna
happen in terms of I think the PGA looking over
its shoulder. You just can't deny that, all right, And
I know they've been protests at Bedminster, and I get it.
It's you watch some of these families that have taken
the podium and one guy said they shouldn't be calling
this the live tour, they should be calling his the
death tour. Because it's been widely reported that the Saudis
(45:27):
were were instrumental in the nine one one attack. I
don't know. I'm not here to report the news. I'm
not Walter Cronk. I google it if you don't know
who he was. But the long and the short of
it is that or is this or is this really heading? Okay?
Where is this? What's what's really gonna happen here? I mean,
the famous actress Lily Tomblin once said I always wanted
(45:49):
to be somebody. I just wish I had been more specific.
So where is the l I V possibly going with this,
and it raises the question could the PGA Tour and
l I V Golf possibly coexist. I'm not saying they're
going to join forces. I'm not saying they are going
(46:11):
to merge like the FL and NFL did. Are the
A B A. You know, when the the NBA absorbed
three or four A BI A teams and the following
year in n in the A B A and they
checked out the NBA All Star Games, six of the
TEMP starters have been in the A B A the
year before. So this, you know, Sports Illustrated has a
(46:32):
very talented writer by the name of Bob Herrick, and
he's done a terrific job of chronicling the dynamic, the
psychodynamics surrounding the l I V and the p G
A and the relationship between the two. And even though
there's a split that really is widening as we speak, right,
(46:55):
you've got the PGA is still golf pre eminent tour
and basically what the l I V is is nothing
more than an upstart startup. But it's backed by the
Saudi family, who's worth you know, between six hundred billion
with A B and a trillion dollars. And so the
question is and and I think bob Riguez has references.
(47:17):
Can the two coexist harmoniously if that were to happen,
It's possible that could be mutually beneficial. All right, Right now,
there's a lot of acrimony, and it doesn't appear that
there's harmony on the horizon. The idea of any kind
of common ground when it comes to the p G
and l I V doesn't seem real. You know, you've
(47:41):
really got to let your imagination run rite and think
that can happen. But see, here's the thing. And when
I tell the story, I tell him from a journalistic standpoint.
I tell the whole story. I don't just tell part
of the story. I don't think the l I V
Golf Tour is going away anytime soon, and many thought
it would. No. No, they're off and running now the
the l I V Invitational, you know, their their third event.
(48:04):
Then they'll have five more after this is he's ready
for the final la a Mile Bedminster and Hendrik Stenson.
You heard Kevin's update. He's got a three stroke lead
over Dustin Johnson. Those are fairly household names, right, and uh,
you know they they'll they'll have their third tournament in
the books tomorrow and someone's gonna walk away with another
four million. And even if you finished dead last, you're
(48:26):
gonna get a hundred and twenty thousand. And the rhetoric
gets a little bit worse because this is right around
the corner from nine on one. And if I've watched
the coverage, and it's it's been a little challenging to
watch because you're seeing real families of people who lost
their family members, lost lives, and you've got Phil Nicholson
(48:47):
who makes the dumbest statement ever and he says, I
have empathy for those folks, Phil, how could you have empathy? Now,
maybe I'm wrong. Did you have a family member die
in nine one in one of the towers, you might
have sympathy, or you might say you have sympathy. You're
just trying to do the right pr thing to justify
your two or a million, and son of my damn business. However,
if you're gonna speak English, speak it properly, because I
(49:08):
don't know how you could admit, but that someone can
correct me. Tweeting at me, maybe there's something I don't know.
And then Phil Nicholson had a very close friend, or
he had a relative or somebody who cherished or perished
in in one of the towers on September eleven, two
thousand one. But I don't think empathy is the right
word based on what I think I know. But see
(49:29):
every week more players defect, more players are talked to.
Even though that Barkley didn't make the trek um because
again he wasn't offered anything. The best of my analogy,
they talked to him. I think, actually, uh, the LV
tour benefited from the Barkley one night standard as it were,
the little dalliance there for a week, and it made
(49:50):
for good fodder on on sports talk radio and the like.
But at the end he didn't go anywhere. But I've
heard from people I trust it the l V is
actually approached a lot of bigger name type announcement announcers
and broadcasters from behind the scenes, and you'll start to
see more of these names emerged, not just David Ferity,
not just Gary McCord. And I throw Gary McCord's name
(50:11):
out there because he's the most prominent name. I think
it's emerges as a chance to to jump over and
join that tour. But you you've got players now that
are not just Hamm and Aggers. Okay, remember that Patrick
can't Ley Bryson Deshamble duel last year at the BMW
(50:31):
Championship in the FedEx Cup playoffs, they had a six
old sudden death playoff that Patrick can't lay one and
that helped propel him to the FedEx Cup title. So
here's what's interesting. That duel as we stand right now
in July can actually happen in the l V Tour
because they're they're on the LV Tour. Bryson Deshambo who
(50:55):
just two years removed from his US Open win at Wingfoot,
he made the move to l i V Golfing. He's
no longer allowed to play in PGA Tour events his choice.
But the fact remains the sport is headed toward a fracture.
For those who are taking part in this new venture
and they're willing to do a door and for something
(51:16):
that's fine, they say, they beat their chest, good ridens,
get rid of them. I don't care. But the overall
picture does not appear bright for the overall game of
golf and and the idea of coming together, however crazy
and earth shattering and make you throw up in your
mouth a little bit that might seem for the p
g A Tour and their leadership, it might end up
(51:38):
being necessary. Coming up, I'm gonna take a little bit
deeper dive into this. Okay, we'll see what Rory McElroy
had to say, and we'll lay out And I want
to give Bob here at top credit because he laid
out several things that the PGA Tour could do and
the l I V Golf Tour could do to engender
(52:02):
and foster a spirit of cooperation. Pretty smart, heavy stuff
before people are too dismissive. You're gonna want to hear this.
I'm Bernie Fratto, her company life in Las Vegas. Fox
Sports Radio Studios. Keep it locked right here. You're listening
to Fox Sports Sunday and Fox Sports Radio. So can
the PGA Tour and live golf possibly coexist? Even Rory
(52:23):
McElroy said a couple of weeks ago he wondered if
it's time for the PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan to
talk and take a call from l I V Commissioner
Greg Norman, because there's a massive problem brewing. Bob Herrig
of Sports Illustrated laid out several ideas on how there
(52:45):
could be some sort of compromise, because I don't think
the l V Tour is going away. They just announced
major expansion for which I just chronicle left. The four
team tournaments next year four ndered five million dollars in
prize money. Wow number one. Uh And this is from
Bob Harrick. So you know, allow PGA Tour players and
(53:05):
the DP World Tour to compete in l IV events.
The key here to this whole thing is going to
have to be some sort of compromise. Otherwise there's no
chance for any of this to work. And what happens
is the game of golf and professional golf is gonna suffer,
I believe image wise, and the TV ratings are already down.
(53:25):
Greg Norman has basically said he gets it that LV
golf is an additive. Okay, they're not trying to replace
the PGA Tour, and they're not even trying to thwart
players or make drive a wedge. It just want to
be an additional alternative. So here's the compromise. YEA, Perhaps
the Live Tour reduces its number of events to ten
(53:46):
and the PGA Tour lowers its minimum for those competing
and I'll vy events to ten. See there's a compromise.
You can play in llevy tournaments. There's twenty events, including
the majors. Obviously you've got a situation now where players
can pick and choose, but it's not it's it's finiteing
the number of tournaments, but it's not absolute that they
can play cannot play. Here's another idea that Bob Harrick had.
(54:10):
How about if the liv golf helps subsidize PGA Tour purses. Remember,
the PGA Tour is set up as a nonprofit. They
say about two hundred million dollars in taxes annually. As
a results of that, they're not allowed to pay golfers directly.
They can only create purses. Otherwise they lose the tax incentives. Now,
if you get past the first hurdle and decide, okay,
(54:30):
you can play in this many tournaments in both those
who compete in l i V events can still be
PGA Tour members in exchange for the rights. L i
V in turn, could subsidize purses. For instance, let's say
the l i V Tour kicks in another five or
ten million per event and adds it to the purse
all of a sudden there that you know that that
(54:51):
could be an extra fifty to a hundred million dollars
in PGA Tour events. And if the Saudi public events
been fund can afford, you know, signing huge bonuses to
get players to join the tour, they can probably afford
to throw a few million here and there. You know,
what's a few million between friends. For instance, Let's say
the Rocket Mortgage Classic this week was in Detroit. Let's
say the LVA Tours say, I'll tell you what were
(55:14):
we want to be decent about this. We're gonna throw
another five million your way. That would go a long
way perhaps, and the rest of the membership saying, okay,
let's not be so quick to jump. Let's honor the
legacy the PGA Tour. The third thing is perhaps there
can be some sort of TV agreement. Now, this is
(55:35):
gonna be a major hurdle, I think to get over.
And I don't know, I don't I don't know what
kind of compromise you have here, but perhaps you have.
And what was suggested is perhaps as many as ten
l I V events that come under the PGA Tours
Television rights agreement now Listen, this could end up being
(55:56):
a very complicated issue. And I don't know how you
split revenue, and I don't know how you do this,
But again, this all comes down to having conversations and
having compromise. Now that if you're the PG Tour and
you're the big you're still a big dog on the block,
although you're being challenged now much the same way the
A f L challenge the NFL in the sixties and
the the A b A challenge the NBA and the seventies.
(56:19):
What's in it for the PGA? How were they helped
buy an arrangement like this? Okay, I I think if
you don't, if the PGA doesn't find some compromise, you're
going to continue to see a slow trickle of players
head over from the l I V Tour to the
PGA Tour. It's going to continue to play out. And
(56:40):
you've already lost nine of the top forty. And if
you get to a point you start to lose a
majority of the top fifty players in the world to
you know, to the l I V Tour, that's gonna
be a problem. You say, okay, well, well you can play,
but you can only play ten events. A year that
becomes more manageable. So it's not you can't tell me
it's great for the PGA that you see Dustin Johnson
(57:02):
and Bryson de Shambro and brooks Kaepka. Uh, if they're
not being able to be able to play in the
Players Championship in March, what good does that do the
game of golf and p G A. So there has
to be against some sort of compromise there now. I
think the schedule right now, the way it's set up,
five of the eight events this year are scheduled for
(57:23):
after the fed X Cup playoffs. And this was not
done randomly. I'm talking about the l i V events.
The l i V they basically took a look at
the calendar and saw September in October is a good
time to play the majority of their tournaments. Now, there's
nothing to keep that from happening in the future if
they could create this collaboration with the PGA Tour have
(57:43):
already said of the fourteen tournaments the l IV is
setting up next year, none, it's my understanding, none will
interfere with the four Majors or the Ryder Cup or
anything of that nature. So let's see you go with
a hypothetical ten and ten model, LV could potentially play,
you know, starting in February through July, total the six
(58:06):
events and then leave four for September and October. And
Greg Norman said he's not interested in playing in tournaments
against legacy PGA Tour events. So they're not really declaring
war as it were, right, They're not gonna say, okay,
you got the Masters going this weekend. Hey guess what,
We're gonna throw up a tournament, uh the same weekend.
So they want the l V players or the players
(58:26):
who have defective to still be able to compete in
the four Majors and the players and the Genesis and
the Arnold Palmer and a memorial, and you know, there
are ways. I think if cooler minds can can prevail,
this can happen. Now, what do you do with the
world rankings? The ranking points would no longer be imperative
(58:46):
for ALVY events with the access to the PGA Tour,
then ALLIVY players would benefit from earning points in those events.
It would actually incentivize them to compete in more PGA
Tour events if points are necessary. Meanwhile, the Live Tour
events with their big purses and their season ending team
championship contests. In theory, that might be enough to be
(59:10):
that out of live league that Greg Norman talks about. Now,
does this have a chance for success? Yeah, Now, I'm
sure there are people out there that are rooting for
the LV tournament to fail to just forget it, throw
it down the toilet, don't. We don't want it to
succeed at all. And if you're of that mindset, and
(59:30):
you you you understand that you're just never gonna be
able to get past the Saudi funding source, I get it.
And if you just simply prefer the PGA Tour as
it's nonstructure with no outside competition, well then you're you're
not going to subscribe to any of these ideas are
not for you. Here's the issue. If the PGA Tours
are the same mindset, and it can continue to do
(59:53):
what it's doing by suspending PGA Tour members and not
allowing access to their tournaments, this is what could happen,
but it would also face the risk of continually losing
top players to big money. You're dealing with human beings
here who typically make decisions on emotion and then justify
that emotion later with logic now with some common ground
(01:00:14):
though the live tours forty eight player fields and the
good that you know, you could have a good number
of top players and the added team component maybe that
starts to get traction among golf fans. Wouldn't be every week,
but the occasional diversion from the regular PGA Tour grind
for six months and then something else to perhaps embrace.
After the FedEx playoffs, the majors would still be king
(01:00:39):
the players and the majority of the favorite PGA Tour
stops would still be intact, and you would just have
this little additive, as Greg Norman off to the side.
Those events could then you know, go up against l
i V events and they would get enhanced purses and
players competing in in an opportunity to gain ground on
live players who would not be earning FedEx points. And
(01:01:02):
you know, you'd rotate these tournaments and figure out a calendar.
And I think it would also be helpful if the
l i V events and on Saturdays. Think about that.
That gives the PGA Tour event opposite its own stage
on Sunday and they would still again be they rule
the roost as it were, I have no idea if
(01:01:25):
any of this is going to happen. I do know this.
I think there's one hell of a collision course and
sometimes you know, it's not so easy too to drop,
you know, to bury the hatchet. But I think some
of the things that were just suggested, and again Bob
Herrick of Sports Illustrated is chronicled, many of these things,
(01:01:47):
um are not completely unrealistic. We shall see what we
shall see coming up. Uh As. By the way, event
number three for l I v ends in Bedminster Sunday
with many a million names that you recall being on
the PGA. Speaking of a familiar name, Mike McCarthy a
k a. Barnie Rubble. You know how I feel about him. Well,
(01:02:10):
he stepped up to the mic the other day. He's
not real happy with people questioning his job security. We
will discuss, but first go back to Kevin Figures with
the latest. All right, Bernie, you're talking about that live
golf tour. We'll start with the PGA. Have been in Detroit,
by the way, Tony feel as you mentioned, tie with
Canadian Taylor Pendrith for the lead and we have the
(01:02:30):
final round coming up later today in New Jersey, that
is where the live event is taking place. Henrich Stinson
two under sixty nine on Saturday, three stroke lead over
Dustin Johnson headed into today's found A round of course
three rounds in the live tournament at UFC two seventies seven.
Amna Nunia has defeated Julianna Pina by unanimous decision. She
regained the bantam weight title she lost to Pennie last year.
(01:02:51):
Brandon Moreno defeated Kayak of France for the interim flyweight title.
So Major League Baseball, the Giants held alf a late
Cubs rally for a five to four victory. Cubs trader
reliever Chris Martin to the Dodgers. L A lost in
Colorado five to three, snapping a three game winning streak.
Showy Otani a home run for the Angels stay not
a comeback victory over the Rangers. Aaron Judge home run
(01:03:12):
number forty two on the season as the Yankees hammer
Kansas City eight to two. That's also career home run
number two hundred for Aaron Judge. It was a brave
six in Arizona to Phillies over the Pirates for their
fourth consecutive victory. Seattle, Minnesota and the Mets with wins
as well. Back to Bernie Freddock. All right, thanks so much, Kevin,
good stuff, buddy. All Right. You know, Mike McCarthy uh
(01:03:37):
is currently the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, and
I know he doesn't want to hear that, but it's
just impossible, uh to imagine that his job security is
is good as he wants you to make it believe.
When he got up to the microphone the other day
and why is that? Okay? So here's why. And I'm
(01:03:59):
gonna to give you a We're gonna take a quick
walk down memory lane from the playoffs last January, because
ever since the Cowboys had that playoff blunder and the
wild card round at the end of the game, hold you,
I'm gonna refresh your memory. Oh yeah, I forgot about that.
Mike McCarthy's job security has been a major talking point now.
(01:04:21):
Despite public support from the team's front office, the rumors
have continued to swirl. And when he was asked about
his job security to start a you know, there was
a media availability Monday event, he was not very happy.
Quote here's what McCarthy said. It's irritating that the first
question you asked me has nothing to do with how
(01:04:43):
I do my job. I show up every day for
work to win a championship. That's fascinating. How do how
do we win today? That's what I'm asking, Okay, My
viewpoint is not a story, he continued, It's a media
driven there of, or at least a narrative driven outside
my realm. Now, one of the things fueling this is,
(01:05:09):
you know former coach Saints coach Sean Payton. He's rumored
to be a target to replace Mike McCarthy and Dallas,
but nothing came of it, right, I think Payton's gonna
take a year off. He accepted a job as an
analyst for Fox, but I think he's very open two
returning to coaching in the NFL. And of course it
(01:05:33):
became very cryptic, as he said, it depends on the
quote fit. Dallas's defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was also rumored
to be a potential replacement for Mike McCarthy, and he's
also had to fend off questions on the matter every
single time he speaks to reporters every time. How does
this affect winning? That's what kind of asked. That's what
(01:05:53):
I asked my players, coaches, and staff. That's what McCarthy
went on to say Monday. If it doesn't have to
do with winning, it's a waste of each other's time.
I don't put any credence into these stories, but my
family has to listen to it. I've already spent too
much energy and answering these questions. Okay, I have this
message for you, Mike McCarthy. Talk is cheap, my friend,
(01:06:15):
and I will give you your your props. You want
a Super Bowl one back in Green Bay, But I
I Mike McCarthy would not coach my team. He's got
that look on his face like he's wandering the poll
the mall parking lot. Can't remember we're he parked his
car when the heat gets hot and it's hard to breathe.
He's lost. Now, let's take that walk down memory lane
(01:06:36):
I promised a minute ago. Do you remember their game
against the forty niners where the Cowboys could not get
off the final play after not only was it a
questionable play call, it was very questionable execution and there
was even a bit of a rough controversy. Let me
refresh your memory. I'm sure you're going it's all going
(01:06:57):
to come rushing back. See other franchises might be, you know,
be able to get away with this a little bit.
But given their massive fan base and high profile owner,
every Dallas Cowboy game is a major event and they're
never boring, win, loser, draw. And so when the Cowboys
exited the playoffs in the against the fort in the
(01:07:18):
wild card at home last January, it was not only chaotic.
Chaotic has said kind of a I do standard for
post season craziness for Dallas Cowboys fans. Let's set this up.
Dallas actually trailed and the fourth quarter, but they cut
the deficit. Then the Cowboys got the ball to their
(01:07:40):
own twenty yard line with thirty two seconds left and
no Timehouse subsequently drove to the forty one yard line
with fourteen seconds remaining, and that's where the story goes
from here and everything when Haywire on the final play
of the game, that is the thing that left everybody
(01:08:01):
scratching their heads. The sequence began with fourteen seconds left
in the fourth quarter, again, Dallas trailing seventeen around the
niners forty one yard line. Cowboys had the ball. Here's
the key, with no time outs remaining, when Dak Prescott
scampered up the middle on a quarterback draw. He gained
seventeen yards on the second and one run to get
(01:08:23):
to the forty twenty four yard line with nine seconds
left in the game. Now, mind you remember a field
goal doesn't no good there? Then the Cowboys run a
quarterback draw. Okay, Prescott scampers up the middle. Then they huddled,
discussed the situation and the official announcement. Let let me
(01:08:44):
back up. I left out a key part because whenever
I'm actually picturing the play in my mind when it's happening.
Because remember, and this is a key part. After Zach
Dark Prescott ran the ball to the twenty four yard
line and the clock continues to tick down, Dallas really
(01:09:05):
tried to hurry. He gets set up to spike the ball,
but after sliding to end his run, and this is
where the story is the most pronounced. After sliding to
end his run, Prescott gets up and he hands the
ball to his center, who got ready to snap it.
But by rule, the referee must touch and spot the
ball before the next play can begin. And as the
(01:09:29):
umpire on the field that day, it ran up from
behind the play to do so. He collided with Dak
Prescott and the offensive line, which further delayed spot in
the ball, and time ran out before Dak Prescott could
get a chance to kill the clock. There was controversy,
and all of a sudden, the officials huddled to discuss
(01:09:50):
the situation and they announced the game is over. The
forty Niners started jumping up and down and celebrating, and
even though the play game seven jen yards was the
final play of the game, they didn't want it to be.
Here's one of the questions and the lack of preparedness
and you can't lock the barn door after the horses
(01:10:13):
stolen type of narrative happened, because why would you call
a quarterback draw with such little time on the clock.
And not only will this be scrutinized, you know in
all offseason, it's gonna be scrutinized in perpetuity if the
Cowboys don't get back to the Super Bowl this year.
And that collision with the umpire and Prescott and the
ball is being set. So here's where it also gets dicey,
(01:10:35):
and I don't think it's a good look for Mike McCarthy.
The conversation then morphed into whose fault was it? Who's
whose fault? Really? Who's really to blame here? Because Dallas
loses the game on a on a bizarre finished where
the clock is running out, and I think the most
broad based answer, the most general answer, the most widely
(01:10:59):
accepted answer, was that it was the Cowboys fault, and
who was in charge of the Cowboys, Mike McCarthy. The
Niners opened the door down the stretch. And let's not
forget Dallas. You talk about preparedness, They opened the game
very poorly. They had a very undisciplined performance at home.
They fell behind seven and and and the lack of
(01:11:22):
discipline continued it all the way to the final bell
because they were technically at fault for the end of
the game. And then Mike McCarthy tries to provide an
explanation two days later and doubles down that he the
same thing he said on game day. He only added
to the head scratching because he cited a similar play
(01:11:43):
that had happened in the game between the Jaguars and
the Vikings three years earlier. Now, McCarthy was right in
the sense that with fourteen seconds left on the clock
and then this was three years earlier. The Jaguars went
in with a draw play, quickly got back to the
line of scrimmage, and spiked a ball before the game
clock ran out. However, not only was the field positioning different,
(01:12:04):
and by the way, they had a time out. Jacksonville
started the plan its own forty one yard line ended
at Minnesota's forty four yard line, but their plan was
just to set the team up for a field goal.
McCarthy had no time ons left and they needed a touchdown,
So pointing to a strategy that may have worked for
Jacksonville three years earlier doesn't help McCarthy justify the field
(01:12:25):
strategy from a very bad team that, on that day
at home, made people ask themselves, is Mike McCarthy the
right person for this job? Flat out? McCarthy also said
that in practice, the Cowboys got the process of running
the play and spiking the ball down to thirteen seconds.
(01:12:46):
So then, why then would the team run a play
that gives themselves only one second of wiggle room and
a highly charged winner go home game like this. There's
also a bigger question of why Dak Prescott didn't simply
hand of ball the official McCarthy said, Prescott is trained
to hand the ball to the center instead of the
(01:13:07):
ref and the team is training to line up as
quickly as possible. In other words, McCarthy told on himself
that his procedure that he coached the team to do
cost the Cowboys of the game more than the refs.
Since the Dallas offensive line briefly stalled the official, who's
trying to grab up the football. It's a final sick
and stick down. So in summation and trying to explain
(01:13:28):
away a crazy, one of a kind playoff exit, all
McCarthy seemed to do is reinforce the notion that the
Cowboys set themselves up for this exact type of failure.
Besides the fact they actually called a quarterback draw with
fourteen seconds left and zero time outs at their disposal.
Rather than you know, try hail Mary or even a
(01:13:49):
short pass to avoid a running clock, the Cowboys needed
set all out aside, throw all that out at the
end of the day. Whatever happened in that play, the
Cowboys needed to immediately get the ball on the officials
hands before taking their next snap. Next snap, that's what
is common procedure in hurry up situations. Instead Prescott gave
the ball to the center, and he attempted to get
(01:14:12):
under center that he collided with the incoming ref who
had to set the ball himself. In other words, had
Prescott simply gotten the ball to the ref, there's a
better chance the Cowboys wouldn't have taken more time to
get the ball snapped. And Mike McCarthy is not happy
with questions about the way he conducts his job. All right,
(01:14:33):
speeches are nice, talk is cheap, I get it. Cowboys
go out and win games this year. I have no
fa Frankly, I'm already on record. I think the Cowboys
are going to regress. I think they're a very talented roster,
and I think they're gonna have their moments like they
do every year. But do I think they're gonna go
over ten and a half wins? No? I don't only
(01:14:57):
be two playoff teams last year, both of the more
named Philadel for you, the weakest playoff team in the field.
They lost four to four their playoff teams Tampa Bay,
Kansas City. Right on down the line, their defense ranked
in yards per play all out. That's not good. However,
they lead the league in turning the opponent over that
(01:15:17):
usually comes back the other way the following year. What
goes up must come down whatever happens, like it or not,
Mike McCarthy is gonna bear the brunt of it. On
the other hand, if he gets into a Super Bowl,
I'll come back on the same air waves and pat
him on the back. Do I think that's gonna happen? Yeah?
(01:15:38):
I think I think led Zeppelin will re record the
Gilligan's Island theme song and sell a million copies before
Dallas win the Super Bowl this year. However, I always
believe the NFL is better. I always believe the NFL
is better when the Cowboys are good, when the Raiders
are good. It's like baseball love more. The opposite of
love is not hate, it's indifference. I don't love the Cowboys.
(01:15:59):
I don't at the Cowboys and don't love the Raiders.
I don't hate the Raiders. If the Cowboys do well
and get to the NFC Championship Game or beyond, it's
it's good for football. Do I think Mike McCarthy can
do that? I already gave you my mall analogy. That's
a quick way of saying I don't know. I don't
think so. Coming up. Legalized betting has been going bananas
(01:16:21):
across America, and one particular state has really set the
standard when it comes to mobile sports betting. And you
might know who it is. You can probably figure it out.
I'll give you a clue. It's not Nevada. I'm Bernie
Frida or Company Alive from Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Keep it locked right here. You're listening to Fox Sports
Sunday and Fox Sports Radio. All right back on Fox
Sports Sunday, Fox Sports Radio, Bernie Frida, Company Alive from
(01:16:44):
the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. We're about ten
minutes away from what kind of brand new fool are you?
Followed by what my name? And at the bottom of
the art Chris Prefet's World of Soccer. A lot of
stuff to get to. You know, it's been over four
years since the Supreme Court struck on the federal ban
on sports betting, which allowed states to legalize it as
they would. So where do we stand now? Um, just
(01:17:08):
about every state in the Unions as at least considered
legal sports betting. But look, let's face it, you have
it's a state by state issue, and you've got a
lot of deep seated political opposition in multiple states. You've
got some very complex tribal relationships that will most likely
prevent at least ten or so states from coming online
(01:17:31):
for many, many years. Um, it's so far in Maine
and Kansas have legalized sports betting. There are multiple additional
states possible for this year. That includes Massachusetts, where lawmakers
are actually sorting a compromise between two different bills, and California,
(01:17:52):
where two measures are expected to make the California ballot
that would legalize different forms of sports. Right now, there
are thirty two states that that has legalized sports betting,
but nine of them are only in person sports betting
and uh that's brick and mortar, and seventeen have full
(01:18:13):
mobile betting with multiple options. Uh. It's it's different throughout
the map, and it's something people can easily uh, you know, research.
But let's get to the point. The state of New
York has now generated two million in mobile sports betting
tax revenue since they launched in January, which far surpasses
(01:18:36):
any expectations and beats every other state in total revenue. Now,
you can say it's because of their population, but let's
give New your credit. They've done a fabulous job. They
benefit from being the largest mobile sports betting market in
the United States with more than three million unique player
accounts created since January, which means you can bet right
from your phone. You don't have to go to the
(01:18:57):
sports book. Now, let's give me your a ton of
credit because this official handle of one point six billion
in the last year sets a record for every state.
And you know, New York was projected they would generate
three and fifty seven million in betting, and so they
far surpassed that. Pennsylvania, by the way, Winking and nod
(01:19:18):
Day ranked second with two hundred and sixty million money
collected in New Jersey SAIDs third with two hundred thirty
seven million. I give those states top credit because they've
been very innovative when it comes to products and sports
betting through legalized apps on your phone, so you can
do it right from your living room. And that is
the future of this industry coming up. You don't want
(01:19:39):
to miss it. The dance sensation sweeping the nation. What
kind of brand new fool are you? I'm Bernie Fratto
and this is Fox Sports Sunday. The Fox Sports Sunday
train keeps rolling right along, three down, one to go
on Bernie Fratto or County Alive from the Las Vegas
Fox Sports Radio studios. We will take you up to
(01:19:59):
three am PA, say pick six am Eastern. So, got
a lot of stuff to get to, including but not
limited to that part of the show. We do it
every time, this time during the show, every week, and
it involves a segment that we affectionately referred to as
(01:20:24):
what kind of brand new fool are you? What kind
of brand new fool you see every day? Every week?
There we are every day somebody across this fine land
of ours, and even around the world, they do things
that leave you scratching your head that can only make
(01:20:46):
you draw the simple conclusion that we characterize as what
kind of brand new fool are you? So this week,
ladies and gents, meet Christie Jones, a forty year old
woman from North Carolina who recently got really mad at
her boyfriend. Now. She lives in Rowan County, and the
Sheriff's office said they were called by a homeowner in
(01:21:08):
her neighborhood who was woken up last Friday by another
neighbor who saw a woman trying to set fire to
their house. The woman was identified by investigators as the
aforementioned Christie Jones, forty nine years old. When deputies got
to the house, they found a wood bundle that was
set on fire on the front porch. Along with that,
(01:21:31):
the deputies found a jug of oil they believed was
used to start the fire. Now, the homeowner tried to
put the fire out with the cardinals, which didn't work
because Jones had allegedly used a seilant, the deputy said,
helped to block the water. She wasn't playing man, so
the homeowner grabbed a rifle and confronted Jones, who was
apparently holding one of the homeowners dogs on a leash.
(01:21:54):
Then she drove off and the fire crews approached. The
bottom line is Jones was a rested and booked on
recommended charges of felony first degree arson, I saw it
with a deadly weapon, and larceny of an animal, all
because she was mad at her boyfriend. Now, fortunately, the
dog was found and the fire was put out for
any serious damage occurred, and investigators believe the home incurred
(01:22:16):
about twentylls with the damage. But here's the kicker, Christie
Jones went to the wrong house. That's right in her
attempt at revenge against her boyfriend. She said, the wrong
house on fire. Christie Jones, what kind of brand new
fool are you? Christoper Fect? You're up all right, Bernie,
we're going to the world of music for this one. Um.
(01:22:38):
I don't think you've probably heard of the band mud
Vain have you can't see I have? Well, they have
a song called um. The name of the song is
not Falling. If I may, I'm gonna play just a
quick sample of it, just so you get the sense
of the music. So it's uh, it's very tough, it's
very it's very uh, very angry, and the name of
the song is not Falling. So the lyrics, I'll spare
(01:22:59):
you of lyrics. All you need to know is that
that's the name of the song, not Falling. Well. July
performance and Tampa frontman Chad Gray, who sings those very lyrics,
took a a step towards the front of the stage
and Bernie, what do you think happened next? Kicked in
the nuts. Well as he was singing not Falling, Chad
Gray did indeed fall from the from the from the
(01:23:24):
stage into the crowd. Now, true to form, he got
I mean to his credit, he got right back up.
You know, it wasn't. It wasn't one of the catastrophic
falls we've seen lately. He did get right back up,
jump back on the stage and kept going with the
song like nothing had happened. But it's uh, it's a
little as you say, it's a little kick in the
in the nads when you are singing a song not
falling and just happened to yourself. And proper use of
(01:23:48):
the word irony. Folks often confused irony with quincon anxieties
when the firehouse is burning down. So if you're singing
a song about falling and you fall, that that is ironic. Yes,
it is ironic. All right, good, good one. Chris Kevin
Fingers jump in. What do you got for us, buddy?
We'll go to the San Francisco Bay area for this one.
There was a man who broke inside of a Johnny's
(01:24:08):
Donuts in San Francisco. Go broke in. Actually used some
sort of tool to manipulate the office, the door knob
in the office to get inside. He actually took the
keys to a corporate or to a vehicle that belongs
to donut shop, but left his own keys, so he
left and came back to retrieve his keys. The surveillance
(01:24:30):
video actually picked up his footage of him as he
came back in. Now he's still on the loose as
far as I can tell at this point in time.
But the weird part for me in this situation, Bernie, is,
you know, if you're gonna go in and still and
basically he stole petty cash, it sounds like it sounds
like it wasn't like anything, you know, crazy. Wouldn't you
go in and do like a golden tat and get
you a maple bar or something? If you're gonna break
(01:24:51):
into a donut shop? I mean, what are we doing?
Come on? Uh? Nicely done, golden tea? Alright, good stuff, Cavin.
Now we shaved both for last. Both often has some
of the more unique relatable closer to home. What kind
of brand new fools are you? Boll? First of all,
how are you well? Bose? I? I thought I had
(01:25:12):
told us. I'm I apologize. Bo is actually uh taking
care of his kid. He's at home right now. But
I've got a I've got a story for him. Actually
I can fee him for a story. You could be
I'll do a double. I'll do a double take this week. So, uh,
when you were getting on a flight, sometimes you've gotta
be really careful about what you're taking on that flight
and where you are going. So we take you here
(01:25:33):
to a woman, Jessica Lee, who was flying from Greece.
She had a layover in Singapore and she made a decision.
She was very hungry to go and get a sandwich
from subway. This seems like no problem. She says that
she got a foot long at subway. We waited in
line for it, but it was so long. Then I
asked the airline representatives before I got into my connecting
(01:25:55):
flight if I could take it on the plane, and
they said it was fine. Well I have been fine
to take it on the plane, Bernie, but it wasn't
fine to land in Australia with the sandwich half eaten,
because at that point she did not declare the sandwich
when she entered Australia and it is a violation of
the country's Bio Security Act. So this sandwich, this foot long,
(01:26:17):
which is no longer five dollars at subway, but it
all in all, the sub the sub and her mistake
cost her one thousand, eight hundred and forty four dollars
because that is the fine that she got at from
from us, from the Australian government. So yeah, so well
(01:26:39):
go ahead there. There's one more fool to this we
haven't gotten to yet, which is, uh the response from
Subway that Australia, apparently Subways was was tagged through TikTok
and said we're on it. And they, however, Subway said
they couldn't pay the fine, but they did gift Jessica
a voucher for one thousand, eight hundred and forty four
(01:26:59):
dollars worth of sandwiches and a bag full of goodies.
Now it sounds very nice, Bernie, but if I was
in her shoes, I probably wouldn't be going back to
Subway anytime soon. No, that's gonna leave a bad taste
in your mouth, pun intended by the way, we do
we know what kind of sandwich it was. It was
a chicken sandwich. Would let us You don't think, and
you don't think in an eighteen hour flight that's gonna
(01:27:20):
start to get a little rancid. I'm just just a thought. Yeah,
you're going from Singapore to Australia. You can you can fit,
you can polish that off, I would think, so you
brought it on the plane for a reason. You know,
maybe she used it as a pillow for all I know.
All right, another rousing addition of what kind of brand
new fool are you? Only a hundred and sixty seven
hours and forty five minutes, America? Do you get another
(01:27:41):
one next week? But stay right there, because up next
another segment we lovingly refer to as what my name
the game show dance sensation sweep in the nation. All right,
we start with a gentleman who hit his third walk
off homer the other night to lead the major leagues. Okay,
(01:28:05):
Kevin figures what my name? Uh Aaron Judge Bamn right
out of the gate. I'll even give you details you
didn't ask for. That was a one nothing victory over
the Kansas City Royals. Nicely done, Yes, yes, yes, all right.
So and by the way, we'll we'll be joining us
(01:28:25):
on this. Chris Ors, he knows he is. He's fully
taking care of a kid, righty, Very good, very good,
thank you. Okay, let's jump to the next one, because
along those same lines, I am the last Los Angeles
Dodger to have three walk off home runs in the
same season, and I did it back in two thousand nine.
Chris Perfette, what my name? Oh? Um, Gonzalez, I forget
(01:28:51):
the first I don't know, probably thinking of Adrian not
not a bad guest, but not him. Okay, two thousand nine,
I was allowed Los Angeles Dodger to have three walk
off home runs in the same season. Uh, Kevin figures,
what my name? I want to say Manny Ramirez, but
I'm not. I'm gonna say Andre Ethier two for two. Bernie,
(01:29:21):
you're you're in fuego, my friend, We're you're in fuego.
All right. You know, there hasn't been a player busted
for a cork bat in twelve years, but I'm the
last player to get busted for a cork bat, and
happened back in the two thousand and ten season. Chris Parfette,
what my name? Oh? Sorry? Um two thousand ten? Um, no, no,
(01:29:45):
I've got nobody. All right, No one's been busted for
a cork bat in twelve years, but back in two
thousand ten, I'm the last one to be busted for
a cork bat. Kevin figures, what my name? Wow? Um,
I know this is wrong because was retired by them.
But I'll say, Sammy Sosa, you are right, oh, really sleeping?
(01:30:07):
Because you are? You? Are you back next week? Because
you might be breaking Joe Tomnio's record. You know, if
you're back with us next week, I don't believe I am. Unfortunately,
screw We're not gonna have the game, then alright, I'll
retire batting a thousand? How about that? Well? Okay, this
keeper going because the crew has been hot on this
the last three or four weeks. All right, we're gonna
switch gears here just a little bit. But I got
(01:30:27):
a feeling you guys are gonna get this one too.
This has to do with football. If I were still alive,
today would be my ninety first birthday. But while I
was alive, I led the forty Niners to three Super
Bowl championships as their head coach. Chris poer Fette. What
my name? Oh God? Why am I blanking on his name? Bill? Uh?
(01:30:49):
Damn it? You're halfway there, Chris, Bill? Why am I
blanking up Houset Coast offense? You know you're just showing off? Now, Kevin?
Who is it? It's Bill Walsh? Of course, damn it.
I knew it. Yeah, I knew you knew it. I mean,
it's just one of it was like on the it
was I knew it was a w name too, but
(01:31:11):
it just cannot remember names the same. I think you
guys are gonna go five for five tonight. I'd be
I'd be shocked if he didn't. Okay, we're all over
the map tonight. On this day in two thousand one,
I won my third consecutive Tour de France on the stay.
In two thousand one, I won my third consecutive toward
to France, Christoper Fette, what my name? Let's just go
(01:31:33):
with Lamb's armstrong bam, and you would have gotten to
five for five. Gentlemen. Might not be the best reference tonight,
but hell, help yourself to some cookies out of petty cash.
You guys deserved it. Excellent, excellent job. These these questions
are not you know, you guys made it look easy,
but uh, these are not easy, folks. Don't try this
(01:31:55):
at home. Actually try at home. You can have all
kinds of fun coming up. You know, we don't don't
even have a decision on the Shaun Watson yet, but
I will share with you from the Personal Conduct Policy
as to what the Peel process is if we go
down that road, you're gonna want to know this before
the decision is rendered. I think it's holding everything up
(01:32:16):
right now. The fact that the NFL was trying to
avoid a possible appeal and they just can't spread the
needle to get a number of both sides can live with.
We shall see. I think you're gonna see a decision
this week. I'm Bernie Fredder Where Comedy Live from the
Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. Keep it locked right here.
You're listening to Fox Sports Sunday and Fox Sports Radio.
(01:32:40):
All right back on Fox Sports Sunday, Fox Sports Radio.
Bernie Freddill come to your life in the Las Vegas
Fox Sports Radio Studios, about ten minutes away from chrisper
Frets World of Soccer. Hey, nine people at the Rolls
Bowl tonight. Man for a friendly. So don't pooh pooh this.
You're starting to see commercials now on TV. This is
a World Cup year, all right. The Shaun Watson believe
(01:33:02):
it or not? After all this Michiguys, after all the
Kabuki dance, all the debate back and forth, the hearings,
the evidence of Yah Yah unless Judge Robinson issues no
discipline at all, and that would be the only way
to keep Goodell or is Designing from designating their decision
is insufficient and to replace it with something that leaves
(01:33:23):
the league would be better off and would mesh with
what the fans and media expect the decision to be.
Unless Judge Robinson issues no discipline at all, well, guess what,
the commissioners still can do whatever the hell he wants,
especially since the policy contains no standard over you or
any other restrictions on his ability to throw out Judge
(01:33:46):
Robinson's conclusion and replace it with something else. You know.
For instance, let's say Judge Robinson comes back with four
games and the NFL says, sorry, we think it should
be seventeen. Now, you don't think that'll be awkward, and
the public reaction is gonna be awkward because it's gonna
show that initially the league was too leaning with Watson,
and that's the overriding prompt for the league. Okay, eight
(01:34:09):
years ago they mishandling the rare rise situation nearly brought
to a little house down, and after watching what Major
League Baseball did the Trevor Bauer, this is really going
to be a referendum on the NFL and how serious
they are willing to take cases of sexual misconduct. Now,
(01:34:29):
we believe it. It's just totally a guess that the
that the you know, based on the odds, and we
believe it's gonna be somewhere between Nate and ten games,
and it is a guess. But here's the relevant language
from the Personal Conduct policy as to the appeals process.
Because what I think is happening and reason this has
taken so long is that whatever happens, because this has
(01:34:52):
been drug through the mud now for almost eight team months,
the NFL wants us to end and stop and not
be a distraction anymore. And sure the Cleveland Browns want
that too. That's gonna be predicated on whatever Judge Robbinson's
decision is not engendering an appeal from the National Football
League or from check that from Rob Deshaun Watson's camp.
(01:35:14):
That's the that's the the needle I think they're trying
to thread right now. Come up with the suspension both
sides can live with. That checks the boxes. Makes it
look like the NFL takes sexual misconduct seriously. But at
the same time, since there's no landmark case since there's
no sentencing guidelines. They're shooting at the dark since a
lot of the evidence is is probably somewhat sufficient but
(01:35:38):
not you know, maybe something you could win in an
actual court law. Again, they are juggling multiple balls in
the air here. But here's the relevant language from the
Personal Conduct Policy as to what the appeal process means.
And I quote, following communication of the disciplinary decision, either
the league or the player may appeal. And by the way,
(01:36:02):
if the player does it, Deshaun Watson would do it
through the NFL p A. And if the league would
appeal because they think it's too lenient, uh, they would
appeal through the management Council. Would they would appeal the
decision to the commissioner or someone that Roger Goodell would assign.
Such appeal will be one processed on an expedited basis
(01:36:24):
too limited to consideration of the terms of discipline imposed,
and three based upon a review of the existing record
without reference to evidence or testimony not previously considered. No
additional evidence or testimony shall be presented to or accepted
by the Commissioner or his designee. Any factual findings at
(01:36:49):
evidentiary determinations of the Disciplinary Officer will be binding to
the parties on appeal, and the decision of the Commissioner
or his designee, which may overturn, reduce, modify, or increase
the discipline previously issued, will be final and binding on
all parties. End quote. So what does this mean after
(01:37:13):
everything that has happened. If the NFL decides they don't
like Jedge Robinson's decision, or Deshaun Watson decides he doesn't
like and his team doesn't like Judge Robinson's decision, then
we've got an appeal on our hands and the kabuki
dance continue continues. Here's what it means. The NFL, despite
(01:37:37):
the changes to the process that they made two years ago,
still has all final city over the discipline. Roger Goodell,
he he, he can still be the one making the
final and binding decision. What's what the hell are we
doing here now? They say it must happen quickly by rule,
it can and tell any new evidence. By rule, it
must be based on the facts that Jedge Robinson determine
(01:38:00):
as them to be, which makes her finding a critical
aspect of her decision. But it could theoretically all go
out the window. Now, how awkward would it be for
the league to say that Judge Robinson, sorry, we think
it should be seventeen games, not four. Yeah, but not
nearly as awkward is going to be that the NFL
(01:38:20):
is going to find themselves in a public relations quagmire
if they end up being too leaning on Watson, or
maybe some might feel that it's too severe. I know
we we know the NFL wants a full season, and
I don't think they're gonna get that. I can tell
you that there are odds in Vegas you can bet
(01:38:42):
uh minus one thousand, which means for every thousand dollars,
you bet you'd win a hundreds since ten to one
that Watson will not play Week one, but the odds
are like plus two sixty, which means you can win six.
That he's going to play at least one game this year.
So we don't think that. We don't think the the
(01:39:03):
suspension is going to be the entire season, but we
also don't think Watson is going to be on the
field Week one. After that, it's anybody's guests. We've been
talking about this whole situation on this show for months.
It's beyond me why they couldn't have at least this
whole orchestra of folks who have conspired to make a
(01:39:27):
decision here, whatever that decision, Maybe it's beyond me why
it couldn't have been done a couple of weeks ago
before teams hit camp. So the Cleveland Browns can at
least um move forward. It's not fair to them either,
all right. I also don't think you you can give
the Shawn Watson credit for time served. He he had
(01:39:51):
a paid vacation last year. Was his decision not to play.
He never stepped on the field and he got paid.
That was his decision. Now, I I know you could
argue that, well, no, that's not entirely true, because he
really couldn't play because if he had gotten hurt, they
wouldn't been able to trade the All okay, that's all true.
But in any time, he could have gone to the
(01:40:12):
Cleveland Browns and said, you don't have changed my mind.
Let's let cooler heads prevail. Maybe you should have handled
a little bit differently. If you're gonna go out into
the free agent market, you could least solicit my opinion.
He gave me all that money, I'm your franchise quarterback.
You know, we just made it to the playoffs in
we went from last to first. He could have done that,
(01:40:32):
and I do not believe the NFL would have suspended him.
I do not believe they would have put him on
the example list because no criminal charges were ever filed,
so you can't get him time served. He didn't serve
any time, and he got paid. He had paid vacation
basically at the same time. Uh, I think what is
driving the decision now are optics and the belief that
(01:40:56):
whatever decision has made, it's critical that the NFL doesn't
look too lenient, but also not too overbearing. Perhaps a
full season is too much, but maybe six games is
not enough. They're throwing darts at the dartboard the unknown.
This is really craziness out. It's gone too long, And
like I said, wouldn't that be a kick in the nuts?
(01:41:17):
Sorry Draymond if they went to all this point and
then it got appealed, And then in the appeal Roger
Goodell decided he wanted to do we wanted to do anyway,
and so it's all out the winner And if you
followed even half of that year, a better man than
me coming up Chris Perfet's World of Soccer. Hey, we
had we had people at the Rolls Bowl for a
(01:41:39):
soccer game, a friendly, but that's not the story. The
Premier League is back and we'll discuss it coming up.
But first let's go back to the Hero, the Star
of what my name Kevin figures with the latest All
the Star. Saturday night was the Man and Noon Yez
at a UFC two seventies seven. There, Bernie, she dominated
Julianna Payne. You're winning by unanimous decision, recapturing her Antum
(01:42:00):
Wade championship that she lost to Penia in December of
last year. And golf, you have Tony fen Now who's
tied to top the leader board oft the PGA event
in Detroit. Henry Stinson as a three stroke lead over
Dustin Johnson at the Live Tournament in New Jersey. To
take a look around Major League Baseball Show, he oh
Tania three run home run for the Angels. They had
a five run eighth inning, notching a comeback victory over
(01:42:21):
the Rangers to the final score of nine to seven.
Aaron judge is two career home run for the Yankees.
They dominated Kansas City eight to two. It was Judges
m ob high forty second long ball of the season.
The Rocket is defeating Clayton Kershaw on the Dodgers five
to three, snapping l A's three game win streak. Carlos
Carrasco pitching seven scoreless innings Francisco Lindora, three hits and
a home run for the Mets. They shut out the
(01:42:43):
Marlins for nothing. Twins headed Joe must Grove his fourth
consecutive loss. He started eight, no, He's now eight and four.
Seven to four was the final in favor of the
Twins over the Padres, Brewers over Boston nine to four,
Atlanta Toronto, and the Phillies with wins as well. Back
to Bernie Fredos. All right, thanks so much, Yeah, Kevin,
good job on that, buddy. Alright, this time every week
(01:43:04):
Chris Profet's World of Soccer. Hey, there's always a ton
of stuff in the news. This it's the World Cup year.
Thousand people attended a friendly right in southern California. But
the big news the Premier League returns this week. The
season kicks off Friday. Chris has news on man You,
plus some thoughts on who would win the Premier League
this year. It's time for Chris Profet's World of Soccer.
(01:43:26):
The greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drama. It's
all here in this report from the World of Soccer.
That's right, Bertie. We should probably start with that Rose
(01:43:47):
Bowl attendance, which is out of this world. It's real
Madrid and Juventus, one of the biggest sides in Spain
against one of the biggest sides from Italy in the
Rose Bowl. Massive attendance there. Those clubs, both those leagues
kick off later in August and I can't wait. But
it's it's exciting. It's real, real Madrid, one of the
biggest clubs in the world. You're pulling in that kind
(01:44:09):
of crowd. I've heard a lot of talk this summer
about crowds of these friendlies. You know, we had over
seventy thousand in lambeau Field not long ago, and now
we've just almost got close to a hundred thousand in
the Rose Bowl. No matter what you think about it,
it is big, it's growing, and I don't think you
can ignore it for much longer. Also, before we begin,
(01:44:31):
should note here coming up this morning on the Pacific coast,
I think noon eastern, we have the Women's European Championship
EURO two. England is in the final again. The men's
was on the side for and they took on Italy
and lost. The England Lionesses will be taking on Germany
and that's a very that's a very important one to watch.
(01:44:53):
England always very proud of their of their of their sport.
It's coming home things that nature, and that's exactly where
we're going to the Premier League. So we kicked off
this weekend, Bernie. We had here what was called the
Community Shield. It's kind of the precursor to the Premier
League itself. It's the winner of the f A Cup
against the win you're winner of the Premier League from
last year. That would be Manchester City and Liverpool squared
(01:45:16):
off in Liverpool thrashed Manchester City three one, and I
think that's kind of the big story as we start
to look towards the odds. So I've got the odds
here from DraftKings to talk about who's going to be
the winner right now. Manchester City, the one who just
got thrashed is your current odds on favorite at minus
one six five. But Bernie, I know I'm following a
(01:45:37):
trend here, but I liked how they finished last year.
I think they're insanely well managed. Their team is just
fantastic top to bottom. I know they lost out to
Real Madrid in the Champions League, but I like Liverpool.
They were a step behind for the Premier League last year.
But Liverpool is my odds on is my favorite at
plus two fifty to be winning the Premier You're not wrong. Look,
(01:45:57):
there's kind of the big four man you Arsenal, Chelsea
and Liverpool and and the truth of the matter, Chris,
you had correct me, And it's if I'm wrong, the
the the top four, it's it's it's kind of it's
become a very predictable league. It's the favorites usually find
a way to win. Am I wrong? I mean that
that's no, I think I think it's I think I
would expand that to a top six. So you said Liverpool, Chelsea,
(01:46:20):
and I would also include city in their city is.
Obviously they're a newcomer all things versus the ancient history
of man. You but ever since they got the money
from the Emiratis, they have just skyrocket and they've just
won your WAFA champions by the way, they just got
smoked by Liverpool Freedom they did, they did, yes, but
they are still a very powerful side even though they
(01:46:42):
lost for hems Sterling to Chelsea and I'll throw Tottenham
Hotspur in there. It's kind of considered the big sex
stadium in the world. Very cool stadium, very excellent stadium.
So I think it's it's we are getting a little
bit predictable. I don't think any club this year is
going to make a rule like Lester, run like Lester
did about years ago one seven thousand and one, that's
(01:47:03):
what I mean. Like outside of the Big Six, we
mentioned the next odds on favorite, The next odds favorite
to win the Premier League would be Newcastle, which just
actually speaking of the Saudias and live the Saudi Royal
family investor bought Newcastle and um, they are they're they're
not They're not getting flush like Manchester City did right now,
(01:47:23):
but they are your next odds on favorite at plus
ten thousand's And by the way, Arsenal of the Big
Six is plus three thousand, five hundred. Don't they have
a new Uh Who's who's Eddie? How He's related to
Newcastle in some way and he's one of the Yeah,
he's a that's a team to watch. You know what,
(01:47:44):
they are a team to watch. Well, I'll get to
the I'll get to them in another and some of
the other teams to watch, because I think the middle
of the table and the newly promoted sides are very
interesting right now. But we look at I again, I
like Liverpool to win this right now. I think Manchester
and you you want to look at who's gonna be
the top four because those of the teams that get
to go to the Champions League. I think Manchester City
will be there. Um, it's hard to place the next
(01:48:07):
two for me though. I Arsenal has been out in
the cold for so long, but I like what they've
built with Gabrielle hay Zeus. I like what they've built
with Shaka, and I think they have They have missed
the the top four finish for so long. I can't
see that street continuing. I like Arsenal probably fourth and
then third team. I I like Chelsea. I know a
lot of people have thought Chelsea have kind of fallen behind,
(01:48:28):
but I love their pick up a Raheem Sterling. I
think Chelsea with new ownership in place, now that's off
the table I know they didn't do well with Lukaku,
but I that's I think they're in there. That's my
top four predictions for this year's Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea
and Arsenal. Man United probably just missing the cut and
Tottenham has a habit of falling on their ways. Hot
(01:48:49):
Spurs tends to hot spur Manchester United. By the way,
we got the news. Ronaldo did post on social media
he will be coming back to Manchester United. It looks
like that United did not were unable to move him. However,
they are United still not done. They have one more
move they could be doing. They're preparing to make a
final offer for a player from Barcelona. Frankie d Jong,
(01:49:10):
who has been kind of a story of Europe over
this transfer window, Bernie, because it's it's been very weird
what's going on in Barcelona. I've heard some mumblings from
people that the fiefa fair play rules might come into play.
If you don't know what those are there, they're kind
of like a salary cap. They're kind of not they've
been very unevenly applied. But what Barcelona is doing is
(01:49:31):
very weird. They're going around asking a lot of players
to take cuts. They're trying to figure out how to
get Frankie de Jong to take a cut so they
can move him. This was a club that had to
let Lionel Messi go because they just couldn't pay him.
Their finances are a terrible mess, right, just an awful mess.
And I just don't know what they what they really
plan to do. But Frankie de Jong might be coming
to England. He might not, But if Manchester United picks
(01:49:53):
them up, maybe I can start putting them into the
top four. Djong is a great, great player. Now for
the other sides, you should be watching the Premier League
as we kick off. The first game will be on Friday.
You'll be Arsenals, who is one of my favorites of
the Top four, against Crystal Palace. Crystal Palace is building
very well. They are building a fantastic UH youth system
(01:50:14):
and I think at some point Crystal Palace will be
one of those teams will be competing against some of
the big boys. So I like watching what Crystal Palace
is gonna do this year. I think it's a fantastic
match to start the Premier League season on Friday. Again,
they and they just put up four goals against Mount Keeler. Yes,
they they've had it. They've had some very fun action
friendly in friendlies. Friend aren't so friendly, they're they're brutal.
(01:50:37):
It's the preseason. Everyone's getting ready. Everyone's competing too for
their spot on the starting eleven. Um. I want to
talk about some of the promoted sides, the new promoted
size this year. You've got Fulham, You've got born Mouth.
Those clubs have both come up and down. But the
story to watch this year is notting Him Forest. For
those who don't know the name, I'm gonna give you
a name, Brian Claw. He is considered one of the
(01:50:58):
greatest managers in Wish soccer history. He was the manager
of Nottingham Forest in the seventies and eighties. He won
that he brought them up to the top flight of
the time. It wasn't the Premier League back then, but
was the type top flight of English soccer, and he
won two European Cups, which were the which was the
predecessor to the Champions League. So he was the champion
of Europe twice. Over. They they were just they they
(01:51:22):
were the team of the eighties. They were the toast
of the eighties. Nottingham Forest an unbelievable club and they
were relegated in the nineties after clause you know, after
clause dismissial and look they they've never been the same since.
But I have a lot of friends in England they
are very excited about Nottingham Forest returning. If if you
know anything about Nottingham Forest, they've won They've won multiple
(01:51:43):
European Cups, if a Super Cup. Uh, they've got quite
a resume. Uh, they've won league cups. Yeah, I mean
they've got a resume. It's a classic team returning. He
was one of the first clubs to help form Premier League.
They're back. Uh, they've made some interesting moves. Usually when
a club gets promoted, Bernie, they can go one of
(01:52:03):
two ways. You can either hold to a lot of
your youngsters that helped you through the league championship play,
which isn't great, or you can sell a lot of
those pieces and try to make runs at as many
in Nottingham Forest is a store to watch for the
simple reason they've not been in the Premier League since
the nineties. They've had quite a they've had If I'm
(01:52:25):
not they've been out in the cold for thirty years. Yes,
they've they've they've they've They've been at the bottom of
Championship the second side more than they've been near the top.
They've been fighting to stay relevant. It's very but it's
very excited to see them back. I don't think they've
got a chip on their shoulder. It is and listen,
it's really hard for a promoted side to stay promoted.
A lot of clubs I don't have the exact stat
(01:52:46):
up in front of me. A lot of clubs who
are promoted in the Premier League immediately go back down.
But I think from the moves I've seen Nottingham Forest make,
I like them to stay up and I hope they
stay up. I think English soccer is better with a
club like Nottingham Forest on the table. But they've got
her known that spends a lot of money and it's
taken five years to get back after being you know,
(01:53:07):
relegated for for many years. They haven't won anything. So
they're a story to watch. They are, and that's the
world of soccer. One more note here, uh Bundesliga will
be back around the same time too. I don't have
too many notes on Bundesliga. I I don't watch too
much of the German side. I'm trying to watch more
of them. I know on truck friend for and Bayern
(01:53:28):
Munich will be kicking off this season. But plenty of
soccer coming back, Bernie, it's gonna be filling up everything.
This is kind of my holdover until football, American football returns. Well,
here's what's interesting. Final thought. Look, it starts uh this Saturday.
I well, some of the games are Fridays. Say would
(01:53:48):
you do? Okay? Yeah, Arsenal Crystal Palace, all the way
goes all the way to Memorial Day. That's how long
the season is. You're gonna You're gonna have this six
week hiatus starting November fourteen through December because of the
World Cup. So you'll see some of these same teams,
some of these same players in the Premier League on
the world stage and World Cup. That's what I get
(01:54:09):
a big kick out of. Yeah, we'll we'll get We'll
get more on the World Cup as we get closer there,
as international teams start to get called up, you'll be
interesting to see. There's gonna be a lot of push
and pull between clubs who don't who like look country loyalty,
wins out over club every time. In soccer always it's
it's literally life and death, death, all right, Chris Preferens
(01:54:31):
World of Soccer always a plenty on the docket, or
guess they call it football. Well, we've got American football Thursday,
the Raiders in Jacksonville. We'll talk about that game, how
to bet it, what our thoughts are. Yes, we've got
NFL football, the Hall of Fame game Thursday between the
Raiders and Jacksonville. We'll tell you what to watch for
(01:54:53):
and who we like. I'm Bernie Friderer, come to you
alive from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. Keep
it locked right here. You're listening to Fox Sports Sunday
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, back on Fox Sports Sunday,
Fox Sports Radio. Bernie Freddill coming to your life from
the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios, about ten minutes
away from chrispoer Freet's World of Soccer. Hey, nine people
at the Rolls Bowl tonight, man for a friendly So
(01:55:15):
no pooh pooh this you're starting to see commercials non
on TV. This is a World Cup year, all right,
the Shawn Watson believe it or not. After all this
Michig guys, after all the kabuky Dance, all the debate
back and forth, the hearings, the evidence of Papa yah yah,
unless Judge Robinson issues no discipline at all, and that
(01:55:37):
would be the only way to keep Goodell or is
Designing from designating their decision is insufficient and to replace
it with something that leaves the league would be better
off and would mesh with what the fans and media
expect the decision to be. Unless Judge Robinson issues no
discipline at all, well, guess what. The commissioners still can
(01:55:57):
do whatever the hell he wants, especially since the policy
contains no standard over you or any other restrictions on
his ability to throw out Judge Robinson's conclusion and replace
it with something else. You know. For instance, let's say
Judge Robinson comes back with four games and the NFL says, sorry,
we think it should be seventeen. Now, you don't think
(01:56:20):
that'll be awkward, and the public reaction is gonna be
awkward because it's gonna show that the initially the league
was too leaning with Watson and that's the overriding prompt
for the league. Okay, eight years ago, the misshandling the
rare rise situation nearly brought to the little house down
and after watching what Major League Baseball did the Trevor Bauer,
this is really going to be a referendum on the
(01:56:41):
NFL and how serious they are willing to take cases
of sexual misconduct. Now, we believe it. It's just totally
a guess that the that the you know, based on
the odds, and we believe it's gonna be some of
between Nate and ten games, and it is a guess.
(01:57:02):
But here's the relevant language from the personal conduct policy
as to the appeals process. Because what I think is
happening and reason it has taken so long is that
whatever happens, because this has been drugged through the mud
now for almost eighteen months, the NFL wants us to
end and stop and not be a distraction anymore. I'm
sure the Cleveland Browns want that too. That's gonna be
(01:57:23):
predicated on whatever judge Robinson's decision is not engendering an
appeal from the National Football League or from check that
from rob Deshaun Watson's camp. That's the that's the the
needle I think they're trying to thread right now. Come
up with the suspension both sides can live with. That
checks the boxes. Makes it look like the NFL takes
(01:57:45):
sexual misconducts seriously. But at the same time, since there's
no landmark case, since there's no sentencing guidelines, they're shooting
at the dark since a lot of the evidence is
is probably somewhat sufficient but not you know, maybe something
you could win in an actual court law. Again, they
are juggling multiple balls in the air here. But here's
(01:58:08):
the relevant language from the Personal Conduct Policy as to
what the appeal process means. And I quote, following communication
of the disciplinary decision, either the league or the player
may appeal. And by the way, if the player does it,
hell Deshaun Watson would do it through the NFL p A.
And if the league would appeal because they think it's
(01:58:30):
too lenient, uh, they would appeal through the management Council.
Would they would appeal the decision to the commissioner or
someone that Roger Goodell would a sign such appeal will
be one processed on an expedited basis too limited to
consideration of the terms of discipline imposed, and three based
(01:58:51):
upon a review of the existing record without reference to
evidence or testimony not previously considered. No additional evidence or
testimony shall be presented to or accepted by the Commissioner
or his designee. Any factual findings at evidentiary determinations of
(01:59:12):
the disciplinary officer will be binding to the parties on appeal,
and the decision of the Commissioner or his designee, which
may overturn, reduce, modify, or increase the discipline previously issued,
will be final and binding on all parties. End quote.
(01:59:33):
So what does this mean after everything that has happened.
If the NFL decides they don't like Judge Robinson's decision,
or Deshaun Watson decides he doesn't like in his team
doesn't like Judge Robinson's decision, then we've got an appeal
on our hands and the kabuki dance continue continues. Here's
(01:59:56):
what it means. The NFL, despite the changes to the
process that they made two years ago, still has all
final city over the discipline. Roger Goodell he he can
still be the one making the final and binding decision.
What's what the hell are we doing here now? They
say it must happen quickly. By rule, it can't tell
(02:00:16):
any new evidence. By rule, it must be based on
the facts that Jedd Robinson determines them to be, which
makes her finding a critical aspect of her decision, but
it can theoretically all go out the window. Now, how
awkward would it be for the league to say that,
Jedd Robinson, sorry, we think it should be seventeen games,
(02:00:37):
not four. Yeah, but not nearly as awkward is going
to be that the NFL is going to find themselves
in a public relations quagmire if they end up being
too leaning on Watson, or maybe some might feel that
it's too severe. I know we we know the NFL
wants a full season, and I don't think they're gonna
(02:00:57):
get that. I can tell you that. Or our odds
in Vegas, you can bet uh minus one thousand, which
means for every thousand dollars you bet, you win a hundreds.
It's ten to one that Watson will not play Week one,
But the odds are like plus two sixty, which means
you can win that he's going to play at least
(02:01:20):
one game this year. So we don't think that. We
don't think the the suspension is going to be the
entire season, but we also don't think Watson is going
to be on the field Week one. After that, it's
anybody's guests. We've been talking about this whole situation on
this show for months. It's beyond me why they couldn't
(02:01:42):
have at least this whole orchestra of folks who have
conspired to make a decision here, whatever that decision. Maybe
it's beyond me why it couldn't have been done a
couple of weeks ago before teams hit camp. So the
Cleveland Browns and at least um move forward. It's not
(02:02:04):
fair to them either, all right. I also don't think
you you can give the Shawn Watson credit for time served.
He he had a paid vacation last year. Was his
decision not to play. He never stepped on the field
and he got paid. That was his decision. Now, I
I know you could argue that, well, no, that's not
(02:02:25):
entirely true, because he really couldn't play because if he'd
gotten hurt, they wouldn't been able to trade him. All Okay,
that's all true. But in any time, he could have
gone to the Cleveland Browns and said, you don't have
changed my mind. Let's let cooler heads prevail. Maybe you
should have handled a little bit differently. If you're gonna
go out into the free agent market, you could least solicit.
My opinion, he gave me all that money. I'm your
(02:02:45):
franchise quarterback. You know. We just made it to the
playoffs in eighteen. We went from last to first. He
could have done that, and I do not believe the
NFL would have suspended him. I do not believe they
would have put him on the example list because no
criminal charges wherever filed, so you can't get him time served.
He didn't serve any time and he got paid a
(02:03:07):
paid vacation basically at the same time. Uh, I think
what is driving the decision now are optics and the
belief that whatever decision has made, it's critical that a
the NFL doesn't look too lenient, but also not too overbearing.
Perhaps a full season is too much, but maybe six
(02:03:29):
games is not enough. They're throwing darts at the dartboard
the unknown. This is really craziness out. It's gone too long,
and like I said, wouldn't that be a kick in
the nuts? Sorry Draymond if they went to all this
point and then it got appealed, and then in the
appeal Roger Goodell decided he wanted to do we wanted
to do anyway, and so it's all out the winnow
(02:03:49):
and if you followed even half of that year, a
better man than me coming up Chris Perfet's World of Soccer. Hey,
we had we had nine people at the Rolls Bowl
for a soccer game, a friendly, But that's not the story.
The Premier League is back and we'll discuss it coming up.
But first let's go back to the hero, the star
(02:04:10):
of what my name Kevin figures with the latest All
the Stars Saturday Night was the man and nowon yez
at a UFC two seventies seven there Bernie she dominated
Julianna Pania, winning by unanimous decision, recapturing her bantamweight championship
that she lost to Penia in December of last year.
And golf you have Tony fen Now who's tied to
top the leader board at the PGA event in Detroit.
(02:04:30):
Henry Stinson as a three stroke lead over Dustin Johnson
at the Live tournament in New Jersey. To take a
look around Major League Baseball Show, he O Tany a
three run home run for the Angels. They had a
five run eighth inning, notching a comeback victory over the
Rangers to the final score of nine to seven. Aaron
Judge is two hundredth career home run for the Yankees.
They dominated Kansas City eight to two. It was judges
(02:04:51):
m ob high forty second long ball of the season.
The Rocket is defeating Clayton Kershaw on the Dodgers five
to three, snapping l A's three game win streak. Carlos
Carrasco pitching seven and scoreless innings. Francisco Lindora, three hits
and a home run for the Mets. They shut out
the Marlins for nothing. Twins headed Joe must Grove his
fourth consecutive loss. He started eight, no He's now eight
and four. Seven to four was the final in favor
(02:05:11):
of the Twins over the Padres, Brewers over Boston nine
to four, Atlanta, Toronto, and the Phillies with wins as well.
Back to Bernie Freddo. All right, thanks so much yet, Kevin,
goodjob on that, buddy. Alright, this time every week Chris
Perfet's World of Soccer. Hey, there's always a ton of
stuff in the news this since the World Cup year.
Thousand people attended a friendly right in southern California. But
(02:05:34):
the big news the premier League returns this week. The
season kicks off Friday. Chris says News on Man You,
plus some thoughts on who would win the Premier League
this year. It's time for Chris Perfet's World of Soccer.
The greatest school thrilling finishes the international drum. It's all
(02:06:04):
here in this report from the World of Soccer. That's right, Bernie.
We should probably start with that Rose Bowl attendance, which
is out of this world. It's Real Madrid and Juventus
one of the biggest sides in Spain against one of
the biggest sides from Italy in the Rose Bowl. Massive
attendance there. Uh, those clubs, both those leagues kick off
later in August and I can't wait. But it's it's exciting.
(02:06:27):
It's real, Real Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in
the world. That you're pulling in that kind of crowd.
I've heard a lot of talk this summer about crowds
of these friendlies. You know, we had over seventy thousand
in lambeau Field not long ago and now we've just
almost got close to a hundred thousand in the Rose Bowl.
No matter what you think about it, it is big.
(02:06:47):
It's growing and I don't think you can ignore it
for much longer. Also, before we begin, should note here
coming up this morning on the Pacific coast, I think
noon eastern, we have the Women's European Championship. Euro England
is in the final. Again. The men's was on the
side for and they took on Italy and lost. The
(02:07:10):
England lioness is we'll be taking on Germany and that's
a very that's a very important one to watch. England
always very proud of their of their of their sport.
It's coming home things that nature, and that's exactly where
we're going to the Premier League. So we kicked off
this weekend, Bernie. We had here what was called the
Community Shield. It's kind of the precursor to the Premier
(02:07:31):
League itself. It's the winner of the f A Cup
against the win your winner of the Premier League from
last year. That would be Manchester City and Liverpool squared
off in Liverpool thrashed Manchester City three one, and I
think that's kind of the big story as we start
to look towards the odds. So I've got the odds
here from DraftKings to talk about who's going to be
the winner right now. Manchester City, the one who just
(02:07:51):
got thrashed, is your current odds on favorite at minus
one sixty five. Bernie, I know I'm following a trend here,
but I liked how they finish last year. I think
they're insanely well managed. Their team is just fantastic top
to bottom. I know they lost out to Real Madrid
in the Champions League, but I like Liverpool. They were
a step behind for the Premier League last year, but
(02:08:13):
Liverpool is my odds on, is my favorite at plus
two fifty to be winning the Premier You're not wrong. Look,
there's kind of the big four man you arsenal Chelsea
and Liverpool and and the truth of the matter, Chris,
you had correct me on it if I'm wrong. The
the the top four it's it's it's kind of it's
become a very predictable league. It's the favorites usually find
(02:08:34):
a way to win the Am I wrong? I mean
that that's no. I think I think it's I think
I would expand that to a top six. So you
said Liverpool, Chelsea, and I would also include City in
their city is obviously they're a newcomer all things versus
the ancient history of man you but ever since they
got the money from the Emiratis, they have just skyrocket
(02:08:54):
and they've just won your WAFA champions They just got
smoked by Liverpool three. They did they did it, yes,
but they are still a very powerful side even though
they lost for him Sterling to Chelsea and I'll throw
Tottenham Hotspur in there. It's kind of considered the Big
six stadium in the world. Very cool stadium, very excellent stadium.
So I think it's it's we are getting a little
(02:09:14):
bit predictable. I don't think any club this year is
going to make a rule like Lester run like Lester
did about ten years ago, one seven thousand and one,
that's what I mean. Like outside of the Big Six,
we mentioned the next odds on favorite, The next odds
favorite to win the Premier League would be Newcastle which
just actually speaking of the Saudias and live the Saudi
(02:09:35):
Royal family investor bought Newcastle and um, they are they're
they're not. They're not getting flush like Manchester City did
right now, but they are your next odds on favorite
at plus ten thousands. And by the way, Arsenal of
the Big Six is plus three thousand, five hundred. Don't
they have a new Uh who's who's Eddie? How he's
(02:09:59):
related to Newcastle in some way and he's one of
the Yeah, he's a that's a team to watch, you
know what? They are a team to watch. Well, I'll
get to the I'll get to them in another and
some of the other teams to watch, because I think
the middle of the table and the newly promoted sides
are very interesting right now. But we look at I again,
I like Liverpool to win this right now. I think
Manchester and you we want to look at who's gonna
(02:10:20):
be the top four because those are the teams that
get to go to the Champions League. I think Manchester
City will be there. Um, it's hard to place the
next two for me though. I Arsenal has been out
in the cold for so long, but I like what
they've built with Gabrielle hay Zeus, I like what they've
built with Shaka, and I think they have They have
missed the the top four finish for so long. I
(02:10:41):
can't see that street continuing. I like Arsenal probably fourth
and then third team. I I like Chelsea. I know
a lot of people have thought Chelsea have kind of
fallen behind, but I love their pick up a Raheem Sterling.
I think Chelsea with new ownership in place, now that's
off the table. I know they didn't do well with Lukaku,
but I that's I think they're in there. That's my
top four or predictions for this year's Liverpool, Manchester City,
(02:11:03):
Chelsea and Arsenal. Man United probably just missing the cut
and Tottenham has a habit of falling on their ways.
Hot Spurs tends to hot spur. Manchester United, by the way,
we got the news, Ronaldo did post on social media
he will be coming back to Manchester United. It looks
like that United did not was were unable to move him. However,
(02:11:24):
they are United still not done. They have one more
move they could be doing. They're preparing to make a
final offer for a player from Barcelona. Frankie d John,
who has been kind of the story of Europe over
this transfer window. Bernie, because it's it's been very weird
what's going on in Barcelona. I've heard some mumblings from
people that the fief of fair play rules might come
into play. If you don't know what those are, they're
(02:11:45):
they're kind of like a salary cap. They're kind of
not They've been very unevenly applied. But what Barcelona is
doing is very weird. They're going around asking a lot
of players to take cuts. They're trying to figure out
how to get Frankie de John to take a cut
so they can move him. This was a club that
had to let Lionel Messi go because they just couldn't
pay him. Their finances are a terrible mess, right, just
(02:12:06):
an awful mess, and I just don't know what they
what they really plan to do. But Frankie de Jong
might be coming to England. He might not, but if
Manchester United picks them up, maybe I can start putting
them into the top four. D Jong is a great,
great player. Now for the other side, you should be
watching the Premier League as we kick off. The first
game will be on Friday. You'll be Arsenals, who is
(02:12:26):
one of my favorites for the Top four, against Crystal Palace.
Crystal Palace is building very well. They are building a
fantastic uh youth system and I think at some point
Crystal Palace will be one of those teams will be
competing against some of the big boys. So I like
watching what Crystal Palace is gonna do this year. I
think it's a fantastic match to start the Premier League
(02:12:46):
season on Friday again. They and they just put up
four goals against mont Keeler. Yes, they they've had it.
They've had some very fun action friendly in friendlies. Friend
aren't so friendly, they're they're brutal. It's the preseason. Everyone's
getting read. Everyone's competing too for their spot on the
starting eleven. Um. I want to talk about some of
the promoted sides, the new promoted size this year. You've
(02:13:07):
got Fulham, You've got Born Myth. Those clubs have both
come up and down. But the story to watch this
year is Notting Him Forest. For those who don't know
the name, I'm gonna give you a name, Brian Claw.
He is considered one of the greatest managers in English
soccer history. He was the manager of Notting Him Forest
in the seventies and eighties. He won that he brought
(02:13:28):
them up to the top flight of the time. It
wasn't the Premier League back then, it was the type
top flight of English soccer and he won two European Cups,
which were the which was the predecessor to the Champions League.
So he was the champion of Europe twice over. They
they were just they they were the team of the eighties.
They were the toast of the eighties. Nodding him. Forest
an unbelievable club and they were relegated in the nineties
(02:13:50):
after clause you know, after clause dismissal and look they
they've never been the same since. But I have a
lot of friends in England they are very excited about
notting him Forest turning. If if you know anything about
Nottingham Force, they've won They've won multiple European Cups, one
you if a Super Cup. Uh, they've got quite a resume. Uh,
(02:14:11):
they've won league cups. Yeah, I mean they've got a resume.
It's a classic team returning. It was one of the
first clubs to help form Premier League. They're back. Uh,
they've made some interesting moves. Usually when a club gets promoted, Bernie,
they can go one of two ways. You can either
hold to a lot of your youngsters that helped you
through league championship play, which isn't great, or you can
(02:14:32):
sell a lot of those pieces and try to make
runs at as many Not to interrupt you, but Nottingham
Forest is a store to watch for the simple reason
they've not been in the Premier League since the nineties.
They've had quite a they've had if I'm not they've
been out in the pold for thirty years. Yes, they've, they've,
they've they've they've been at the bottom of Championship the
(02:14:53):
second side more than they've been near the top. They've
been fighting to stay relevant. It's very but it's very
excited to see them back. I don't so they've got
a chip on their shoulder. It is and listen, it's
really hard for a promoted side to stay promoted. A
lot of clubs I don't have the exact stat up
in front of me. A lot of clubs who are
promoted in the Premier League immediately go back down. But
I think from the moves I've seen Nottingham Forest make,
(02:15:15):
I like them to stay up and I hope they
stay up. I think English soccer is better with a
club like Nottingham Forest in on the table. But they've
got a known and that spends a lot of money
and it's taken five years to get back after being
you know, relegated for for many years. They haven't want anything.
They're a story to watch. They are and that's the
(02:15:35):
world of soccer. One more note here, Uh, Bundesliga will
be back around the same time too. I don't have
too many notes on Bundesliga. I I don't watch too
much of the German side. I'm trying to watch more
of them. I know on truck friend for and Bayern
Munich will be kicking off this season. But plenty of
soccer coming back. Bernie, It's gonna be filling up everything.
(02:15:55):
This is kind of my holdover until football, American football retick.
Well here's what's interesting. Final thought. Look, it starts uh
this Saturday. Well, if some of the games are fighting
or sat way would you do? Okay? Ye, Arsenal Crystal Palace,
all the way goes all the way to Memorial Day.
That's how long the season is. You're gonna have this
(02:16:18):
six week hiatus starting November fourteen through December because of
the World Cup. So you'll see some of these same teams,
some of these same players in the Premier League on
the world stage and World Cup. That's what I get
a big kick out of. Yeah, well we'll get We'll
get more on the World Cup as we get closer there.
As international teams start to get called up, it'll be
interesting to see. There's gonna be a lot of push
(02:16:39):
and pull between clubs who don't who like Look you,
country loyalty wins out over club every time. In soccer,
always it's it's literally life and death, all right, Chris prefers.
World of Soccer always plenty on the docket. Or guess
they call it football. Well, we've got America in football Thursday,
(02:17:01):
the Raiders in Jacksonville. We'll talk about that game, how
to bet it, what our thoughts are. Yes, we've got
NFL football, the Hall of Fame game Thursday between the
Raiders and Jacksonville. We'll tell you what to watch for
and who we like. I'm Bernie Frider Company live from
the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. Keep it locked
right here. You're listening to Fox Sports Sunday on Fox
(02:17:22):
Sports Radio. We're back on Fox Sports Radio. Fox Sports
Sunday on Bernie Fraudall Company live from the Las Vegas
Fox Sports Radio Studios. Wrapping it up before I go
any further, I want to take my broadcast team back
in Los Angeles. They've been with me since eleven PM.
Saturday Night Pacific. That would be Chris Perfett and uh
(02:17:43):
Kevin Figgers on the updates as well as uh Bull Benson.
All right, Thursday, we've got National Football League Football, the
Hall of Fame Game raiders in Jacksonville. And I know
people scoff at the NFL preseason. It's not a waste
of time. Offensive coordinator, position coaches, personnel directors. They like
to use these games to evaluate position battles in a
(02:18:07):
game situation as opposed to just drills and practice. You'd
like to be able to gauge the progress of your
first round draft choices, et cetera, from year one, two,
year two. And it's all part of the convention that
begins heading up and culminating with the NFL, which starts
for real five weeks from Thursday with Rams and Buffalo.
(02:18:28):
And by the way, people bet on the NFL preseason
and if you if you hear anybody say, uh, don't
bet on NFL preseason football, that's a mistake. No slap him,
Will Smith, It's not true. It's actually easier than capping
the regular season because how often are you going to
find a situation in any contest where one side doesn't
(02:18:50):
care if they win and the other side does. There
are four reasons for that. First of all, coaches, you know,
there are some coaches that want to win these games,
John our Ball, Pete Carroll, and there are some coaches
that couldn't care less if they win these games. Bill Belichick,
Sean McVeigh owing three last year against the number five
and ten like that's against the spread. So the right
(02:19:12):
coaches want to win, the others don't. You find that
first year coaches also very much want to where there's
ten first year coaches this year. Now you got two
first year coaches Thursday night in terms of their first
year with this team, your Doug Peterson and Jacksonville. You
got Josh McDaniels for the Raiders. But there's no home game.
It's the neutral game. Keep an eye though, because first
(02:19:34):
year coaches want to win their first home game. Three
and twelve in the last five years against the spread.
Something to keep an eye on scheduling teams that are
owing one. If they come against the team one and
all week two, the team that's owen one covers fifty
seven percent of the time. That's part of it as wealth.
And of course you also want to look at depth,
especially the quarterback room. Josh Allen case Keenum, Met Barkley,
(02:19:58):
that's the Bills. That's the death. A lot of games,
just like in the regular season, in the preseason, are
one in the last six or seven minutes. If you've
got a veteran quarterback leading your team against third and
four string guys, who will be cut who with all
due respect, they're gonna be working at Napp Auto Parts
next month. Nothing wrong with that. That's good Christian value
(02:20:18):
is good work. There's integrity in every job. There's dignity
in every job. Let's talk about Thursday. I don't have
an opinion on the side, but I do think it's
gonna be a low scoring game. The total was thirty four,
it's not down to thirty three and a half. Five
of the last six Hall of Fame games have gone
under and games Doug Peterson has been involved in nine
and four the under. I don't expect to see any
(02:20:38):
type of major offensive rhythm in the game Thursday night.
The number one goal. Don't get hurt. Nobody get hurt.
This is an exhibition game. You're not gonna see an
Derek Carr. You might see Trevor Lawrence one series. I
think Jacksonville is a little deeper with players competing for
a job. The Raiders have a much older team. They're
gonna play most of the game with a heavy rotation
(02:21:00):
of undrafted free agents. It's gonna be blah, but it's
gonna be NFL football, and yes you can bet it
and don't pooh pooh. We'll be talking about a lot
more about that in the next few weeks. That's gonna
do it. I'm Bernie Fratto. Keep it locked right here
