Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports. Oh, it is going to
be a unique day as we get you started here
going into a weekend where there's actual football games to
talk about. Artie Spaniard, we are back and ready to
go and better than ever. I know they don't count,
but they count for something. I'm a little and as
(00:23):
we're about what, I'm a little pummed out because I
haven't had this problem in a long long time. I'm
looking at the schedule, but I you know, because I'm
all in on the Dolphins, I can't watch the Dolphin game.
When's the last time you wanted to watch a certain
game and you couldn't get it on TV? We get
all the NFL games on TV. Yeah, well, now you're
gonna need to give me some context here. Why are
(00:45):
you not able to watch the game? It's not on TV? Naturally,
that's not on I'm I live in Vermont. I don't
have the game on out of here. I don't have
the game. So it sounds kind of a little bit
like a you problem out there living in Vermont. I mean,
I had the idea I'm not having access to an
NFL game? What on what on Earth? Orny for a
sports talk radio host and then did we lose him? There?
(01:09):
He goes, I mean he left immediately to go look
and see if he could find the Miami Dolphins game
on his television set. Um perfect, I live in Vermont,
and then bun off in. I mean, that was really
good timing. You're like, I live in Vermont, I'm in
the middle of nowhere, and then suddenly you were nowhere,
(01:29):
and he still is, Okay, all right, we'll get already
back in just a second. But I told you it's
going to be a unique day in a unique show.
And I'll explain why here in just a second. But
I wanted to mention this right out of the gate.
You know, sometimes in life you get a little gentle
reminder from the world about that thing that you've been
meaning to do, and you know you need to stop
(01:50):
procrastinating and you need to get on it. Like I'll
give you an example something that I've been meaning to do.
I bet a lot of you have been meaning to
do the same thing. How about something like an annual physical.
How many years in a row have you been meaning
to do your annual physical? Sometimes you'll go to three, four,
eighteen years without getting your annual physical and you put
(02:12):
it off, and you put it off, you're procrastinating. Then
suddenly there's that slight pain in your abdomen and it
won't go away, and it's just sitting there and you're like,
what's that all about. Well, that's like the gentle reminder.
You hope it's only a gentle reminder, but the gentle reminder,
uh that something's going on. And oh, by the way,
you ought to call the doctor and get that annual
(02:35):
physical on your calendar. Zach Wilson last night for the
New York Jets was a gentle reminder to the Cleveland Browns. Hey, guys,
get on it. Go pull off the Jimmy Garoppolo trade.
(02:56):
I've been trying to say this now for two weeks
here on the weekends Heart Fox Sports Radio, and I've
seen a lot of you tweet me and go, gosh,
you're Jimmy the Cleveland idea. Everybody keeps turning it down.
Bucky Brooks didn't like it, Rich Ornberger didn't like it.
You know who suddenly liked it a couple of days ago. Uh,
Mary Kay Cabot and everybody else who reports on the
Browns because they know inside that building. Deshaun Watson suspension
(03:19):
is going to go up to at least twelve games,
if not many many more, probably in fact, the entire season.
And this idea that Jacoby Brisset can bring the Browns
the same place that Jimmy Garoppolo can, I just flat
out disagree with it. Jimmy's not great, He's not perfect.
We've been through this all a thousand times. But how
many times in history have you seen a starting quarterback
(03:42):
go thirty three and fourteen and the League's like, now,
we're not really interested. The league is interested in backup
quarterbacks who come in and have a good half. I mean,
Marcus Mariota, we've already seen him as a starter, and
the league was like, yeah, so you're going Backupville. It
comes in for the Raiders a few times and you're like, whoa,
(04:05):
that looks pretty good. Poo if your starter again, we're
interested in you. Meantime, Garoppolos over here just when healthy,
winning all the time, and where to believe that the
league is totally disinterested. So here's the update on Zach
Wilson as we know it this morning, um, and the
news has come out from across the board to Adam
(04:26):
Schefter and the rest. It looks like it's going to
be okay. But just okay, that's all it's going to be.
It's not perfect. He's definitely out the rest of the preseason,
and he may be out for the first week or
two of the regular season. There's hope for week one
(04:47):
of the regular season. Plus there's a veteran in Joe
Flacco who's in the building, so that sort of, I think,
calms the whole situation down. It's not something where you're
going to need to go find someone for the rest
of the year. But come on, you did the same
thing I did, and everybody else did, and probably even
(05:09):
former forty Niners assistant Robert Salad did. As soon as
Zack Wilson limped off of the field last night, you
thought to yourself, Paige, Jimmy Garoppolo, you thought it, I
thought it, We all thought it. And if that happens,
(05:29):
well then all of a sudden, the whole conversation changes.
So Zach's gonna be okay. Jimmy to the Jets doesn't
seem like a perfect fit, but it certainly serves as
that little pit in the stomach or in the abdomen.
I would think of the Cleveland Browns just a little
(05:52):
just a little knock, knock, knock, gentle reminder, Hey, Browns,
what are you waiting for? This whole thing made the
most sense in the world all along, and based on
what I mean, we already know. Ian Rappaport has reported
that this Deshaun Watson Uh situation, the appeal from the NFL,
(06:15):
this is gonna lead to at least a double of
this suspension. So there's twelve games, and and I've talked
to plenty of people in Cleveland who said the Browns
thinking was, if Deshaun's gonna miss six games, Jacoby Brissette
can we can go three and three. We can go
three and three with Jakobe And then you get to
Shawn back and he's not coming back Week seven, He's
(06:36):
not coming back. So if it's twelve games, do you
think you can go seven and five? Because I don't.
And if it's seventeen games, do you think you can
go the necessary ten and seven to make the playoffs
in a very very difficult a f C. Go to
(06:57):
the numbers, look at the history. I know Brissette had
a nice year whatever it was, eight td S six
picks statistically at one point, but go to the rating,
go to the win loss record. He is a very
good backup quarterback in the NFL. Jimmy Garoppolo is a
very middle of the road starting quarterback in the NFL.
(07:19):
That's very different. We do this dance every single year,
don't we. There are thirty two teams in the NFL.
Answer this question, are there enough good starters to fill
out all thirty two teams every year? Nope? Nope, not
even close. There never is, There never has been in
the history of the league, and there never will be,
(07:40):
which means there are not, at any given time on
planet Earth thirty two people capable of winning games for
a National Football League franchise. There are not thirty two.
So you're gonna tell me that one of them, who
has proven it year after year after after year, You're
(08:00):
gonna tell me that one of them is just like yeah,
leagues with him, no chance. So the the disenfranchisement, if
you will, Jimmy Garoppolo through the years to me, stops now.
The Cleveland Browns have a phenomenal defense. They've got Nick
Chubb in the backfield. I know they lost their center.
(08:21):
It sounds like for the year. Uh. That's the word
from Stefanski out of Cleveland after last night's preseason game. Um,
but you lose your center. But they've got a lot
of things in place. They've got a receiving corps, they
acquired a Marii Cooper, Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt in the
back field and Joku. They've got all the things they
need to win. And include it in all of that
(08:43):
is an a f C North with a rebooting Pittsburgh
Steeler team. Uh, Cincinnati Bengal team that, quite frankly, if
I can take thirty second aside, is being overvalued by
the public. Right now. Go back to their last season
and realize Cincinnati was good. They aren't great. They went
ten and seven. Um, they barely got by the Raiders
(09:05):
in Round one, they overcame eight socks from the Tennessee
Titans in Game two, and the Chiefs choked away a
monster lead in Week three. The Bengals get credit for
all of those things, but to think that they're going
to be some sort of dominant team in the a
f C this year, they're not. And then the Ravens
are over here. I'm still messing around with their quarterback
(09:26):
situation contractually just three four weeks before the season starts.
This is a winnable division. This is an a f
C that is going to take good quarterback play to
win it. Jacoby bur said, is not gonna walk in
an outduel Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Derek Carr,
(09:46):
Justin Herbert, Russell Wilson, and Matt Ryan to go to
the playoffs, but Jimmy Garoppolo might. And so this was
a gentle reminder last night. The forty Niners leverage can
go up at any moment. It could happen during this
show with more quarterbacks playing preseason games right now. So
(10:07):
as soon as that leverage changes, boom, so does your opportunity.
The Brown's gotta go get him right now, aren't. Are
you with me? Yeah? What's the highest you can get? Though?
Because remember a long time ago, when you're filling in
for Joy I said something so stupid I should be
fired for when I said that you can get two
first round picks for Ganpoo, and that's that You're not
even gonna get a second round pick now. I try
(10:30):
to tell you then, by the way, and I'm sitting
here in San Francisco, and I'm known out here as
like Jimmy's biggest supporter, and you were surpassing me by
double I was like, my gosh, this guy so uh no,
they're not gonna get that. But at this point, though
I don't know how much the Forts even care what
they get, they need to get something. They need to
get something that compensates them for what they're doing. And
(10:52):
and then Jimmy obviously needs to go somewhere where he
feels like he can win. I mean, this is gonna
be a trial year for him to show that he
can do it without Kyle Shanahan. And to me, that's
what Cleveland represents the absolute best spot to do it
because they've got a playoff roster with which to surround him.
So it looks like Zach Wilson's okay, But I thought
(11:12):
that that was just the world reminding the Browns go
get Jimmy while you can, because this could change in
any moment. I thought for sure it was going to
be the worst news possible. And I'm like, Okay, they're
gonna go after get Jimmy Garoppolo, which might not have
been a bad thing for them. It would have just
been like, you know, a temporary relief for the for
the one year. Um, you know, and Mark, make no
mistake about it. If Jimmy Garoppolo was making one million
dollars a year, you would get a first round and
(11:34):
like a third round pick form. It's the fact that
he's making all that money nobody wants to pick up
that contract. That's why nobody's touching him with a ten
foot poll, right. But you also have to understand what
the sort of idiosyncrasy of this contractual situation are. So
Jimmy Garoppolo would be highly motivated to take something off
(11:55):
of that contract. He should and would take a pay
cut the same way Baker may Field did. Because the
forty niners do not guarantee him anything. They can cut
him before week one and his salary would be zero.
And if that's the case, he goes on the open
market week one, what do you think he's gonna get
on the open market. I don't even know if he'd
have a job, and would someone pay him eight million?
(12:16):
So he's not getting the twenty four mill. If someone
wants to come along and say, I don't know, how
about if we cut that in about half we'll give
you twelve. Can the Niners throw in three more to
say thanks? And you take fifteen? Because you're not getting
that on the open market. He should take that if
it's offered well, well, Mark, that'd be saying that that
wouldn't inquire. That means you'd have to pick up the photo.
(12:37):
Actually speak to Jimmy g And from what I've been reading,
he's a tough guy to get ahold of. Even after
he signs of the contract, he may go to Ja Mark.
He's a tough guy to get ahold of. Well in
the off season he is, to believe me, we've talked
a lot about that this week. There is a weird deal,
uh that that you know Garoppolo. In fact, as the
story goes, when he first signed his contract um that
(12:59):
big big ext engine after the first half season he
was with the forty Niners, he left the press conference, smiled,
waived and return anyone's calls or text for two months
And immediately was like, what but but Jimmy's there. Jimmy
is there running on You've seen the video are and
he he's right there running on the sidelines at forty
Niners camp. So to talk to him does not take
(13:20):
a text message. It just takes a Hey, Jimmy, come
here for a second. I want to talk to you.
That's all little take. You know. It made me feel
like a couple that was dating. And then the girl
calls the guy and he never returns the call. I'm like,
what's going on here? I'm reading these articles. I go,
this guy can't pick up the phone after he got
a contract like that. They can't get ahold of him.
They're like, he's m on the m I A do
(13:40):
they have to sound like a welfare check on him
to make sure he's okay? I I mean, I've never
heard of such a thing like that, a deal. And
as it turns out, it's probably one of the three
or four things that we didn't necessarily know. Certainly the
one that we couldn't see. The rest of the stuff
is on the field stuff. It's the one off the
field thing that probably helped move the forty niners along
(14:03):
to make the decision that they made. And and oh,
by the way, Arnie Trey Lance didn't look too shabby
last night. No, he didn't. He didn't look too though.
You can't say the same thing about the Shawn Watson. Oh,
Oh my goodness, what a start that. Oh that was ugly,
absolutely ugly. Well are you talking about his play or
(14:24):
his apology both? I'm talking about both. Okay, Yeah, let's
get to that coming up next. And don't worry, we
will get to Mr Fernando Tatis in San Diego as well.

(15:27):
always got room for cheating, don't we. Yeah, we'll have
a cheating discussion here and now in just a moment.
But yeah, yeah, go ahead. I should be fired. I
really should be Um. I took the Bears markets. I
took the Bears minus three and a half. I don't
(15:47):
I don't care if it's preseason, regular season practice two
a day's never take the Bears over the Chiefs at
late three and a half. On top of that, too,
there's something wrong with me. There's a lot of things
wrong with that. What were you doing, Like, take me
back to the thought process before you did it. I'm
curious as to what would even lead you to such
(16:09):
a move. Because this week they put out a thing
that the Bears were gonna play a lot of the
starters the first half. I didn't think the Chiefs were
gonna play anybody. I'm like, okay, this is They'll run
it up and it'll be the one time that the
Bears will actually look good. They'll have their starting QB
in there and they're down fourteen nothing. I mean that
was I don't care if it's practice two days, whatever
(16:29):
it is. And I laid three and a half. I
didn't even get three and a half. I laid three
and half. There's something wrong with me. I mean, I
I don't know why you thought starters meant something good.
I don't like they don't have good starters either. Here
here's something I want you to avoid. When the world
hears and minus. When those two come together, run yeah,
(16:53):
like they don't. Don't don't do that. I don't don't
Bears minus anything. I know. I want to take the
forty niners. I want to take the forty niners minus
the points week one against the Bears right now, and
I don't even know what the points are and I
don't care. I'll take to forty niners minus whatever the
hell it exactly exactly. I don't know what. I was
the thumbest picking in in the face of the earth.
(17:14):
There's something wrong with me. Oh gosh, but uh, I
mean it shows our thirst. I know a lot of
people who are already laying lumber on preseason games and
Betton and I'm like, I have no idea how anybody
thinks they know what's gonna what's gonna happen in these games,
But I get it. The thirst is there, and in
many ways, unfortunately it's led to the way that we
(17:37):
think about and talk about this Deshaun Watson situation in
Cleveland we know the deal. Something happens that makes our
stomach turns, but it's not going to change the way
we think about football. And that's why the NFL has
the ultimate power. Um. And and nobody's gonna stop watching,
nobody's gonna stop buying tickets, nobody's gonna stop lining up
to get to Shaun Watson's autograph. But I was shocked
(18:01):
at one thing last night, and then I rolled my
eyes at another. I was shocked that they let him
play like this is one of those things where the
NFL knows exactly where this is going, they know exactly
what they're gonna do. Why would you let him go
out onto the field one as a display that you're
(18:21):
hoping to not have and too uh not that this
would matter much for the proceedings, I guess, but it
would muddy the picture a little bit if somehow he
got hurt. Um. And so I was really surprised at
the NFL. I know why. I know they're negotiating. There's
probably a big negotiation right now for a settlement that
that may be happening, um, And that's why it's taking
(18:42):
so long. But but the NFL has the ultimate power,
And so I was surprised they didn't drop the hammer
before the game. No, you know what, I look, I'm
surprised that the the the appeal has not been finalize,
that we don't know what his punishment's going to be.
I'm not surprised that he played, though that would have
been the decision I would have made. I gotta go
ahead and get somebody. These hurdles out of the way.
So now you have the apology, you get him on
(19:03):
the football field. That's another hurdle. People are not gonna say, well,
I wonder what he's gonna look like or what he's
gonna do. I know it's just preseason, but at least
you've got him in a few plays. You've got him
out there. That's going to go ahead and take any
doubt away from that, even though you're gonna want to
see what he's gonna do in the regular season. NFL
must be playing some serious hardball, because from what we
hear um Watson's willing to take an eight game suspension,
(19:25):
I guess the NFL not even close to that. You
think they'd split it down the middle and say let's
do let's do ten games, But that doesn't seem to
be the case there, Mark, So I got to assume
the NFL's playing hard ball. I'm thinking at least twelve
And I was thinking that even before Rapp report came
out and said that yesterday. And quite frankly, I think
Shawn has got a lot of work make this anything
(19:46):
less than a year. Um. They've got all of the backing,
all of the c B A language that they need um,
and and the words of the of the previous judge,
Sue Robinson are not working in Deshawn's favor right now.
And then you mentioned apology. Gosh, this is something we
do so so poorly in this country. I haven't been
enough to other countries to know if it's the same
(20:07):
thing over there, but apologizing is not our strength, and man,
it works if we would just do it right. Fernando
Tatis should have done it last night, as opposed to
saying something ridiculous like he had a skin problem or
I don't know what the hell he said, but absolutely
a ridiculous excuse. Um. The apology we got from Deshaun
(20:28):
Watson yesterday is no different than the apology that you
get on the preschool playground when you grab two kids
that are fighting over a toy truck, and and and
and one of them kind of wax the other one.
And you sit there and hold that one's arm and
go say you're sorry, say you're sor but they no, no, no,
he took the truck. Say you're sorry, say you're sorry,
(20:50):
but I don't want to say you're sorry. Okay, fine, sorry,
And that's that's that's essentially what we got yesterday. There
is nothing more insincere. Been a year and a half
in the making, and the right is he's about to
take the field. Oh, by the way, I'd like to
apologize to everybody for everything that has happened up to
(21:12):
this point, even though I never would until now. I'm
sorry you're so weak and I had to beat you up.
I'm sorry about that. Um, you know, I gotta tell
you something. Yeah, that that's the type of apology it was. Uh,
the whole thing is horrible. He did wait too long,
and really, what was he going to come up with
that's good to make us say, you know what, I
feel bad and I feel bad for the Shaun Watson
and now he's a sympathetic figure. There's really nothing he
(21:35):
could say. Maybe he could show some remorse about what
a terrible thing he did. Um, but you can see
what a what a terrible guy he is. He doesn't
even really have any remorse. A matter of fact, I
don't even really believe he thinks he's done anything wrong.
I think he's just apologizing and backtrack. He but he
just wants to play in the NFL and get his
big contract. Otherwise. Um, he probably in his own mind thinks, hey,
(21:58):
I didn't do anything wrong. This was consents well and
and and by the way, the penalty that's Sue Robinson gave.
I thought it was going to be right around there.
I didn't think because she was going to go ahead
and overdo it. So I wasn't surprised about her initial penalty.
I wasn't terribly surprised by the penalty. But then it's
it's those who have taken the time to go in
and read the words that were in the decision that
(22:18):
are now the problem for Deshaun Watson, because when you
read those words and then try to attach six games
to it, the public is just they're not going to
accept it. And the NFL has it depthly gone through
the CB a process of making it so that they
could be like, yeah, we're gonna kick this over to
a neutral party now, and that nice players, and they
go get a neutral party, and the neutral party comes
(22:39):
out and comes out with this decision, and then they
can wait forty eight hours and watch what the public discourses,
see how angry the public is, and then they can
put a cape on and and fly into the situation.
Oh my goodness, let us save the day. This is
not enough for such an egregious action. Let us save
the day. They are still completely in power there, just
(23:00):
making it look like there are independent arbiters who are
voicing in on this. They're not. They're not at all.
They're just stretching this out in a different way, right,
But it doesn't need to be stretched out like that.
And I thought for sure they would have had this
thing all sewn up before the start of the preseason.
I don't think they even wanted to go into the
preseason the first game with Cleveland with this hanging over
(23:20):
their heads. I'm really curious to see how this is
going to turn out, because it doesn't seem like Deshaun
Watson's camp wants to back down either. And I don't
know if there's gonna be an illegal effects in this too.
So you know, I don't think the NFL is gonna
roll over, But I don't think the Shaun Watson's camp
is gonna roll over either, Mark Well, I don't think
de Shaun Watson's camp's got a prayer. If they want
this to go to court. The NFL will win in court.
(23:42):
They always do, and they especially will this time. Um.
I think he's gonna have to just take whatever he gets,
whether he likes it or not. Might be the case
for Fernando Tattoos as well. We'll get to that in
just a second, Arnie, before we get to the Sager,
I gotta throw this at you and see what you
think about it. We had one of these deals here now,
where life brings you two things that you just can't
(24:03):
pass up at one time. One of them was the
opportunity to sit here and talk to you today. I'm
not passing out up, are you crazy? Right? But the
other one is I got a group. I gotta group.
I've been doing Fantasy League with him for years, um,
and against my will, they like to do the draft
really really early. This was the weekend that everybody could
do it. The draft is starting momentarily, Okay, quirky league.
(24:27):
You start two quarterbacks, bunch of roster spots, lots going on.
It takes some focus, and the draft will be happening
right in the middle of our show, at least the
first few picks. And so what I've done is I've
pulled my awesome sons who love football and know what
they're doing and probably would do a better job than me. Anyway.
They're on a zoom in the next room right now,
(24:50):
getting ready to deliver my picks. But the deal I've
told them I go, they gotta come in here, even
if I'm talking to Arnie, you gotta come in here,
point to the sheet, show me who's available, and nonverbally
we can go through this whole thing now. The other
option would be I can just stop what we're doing
and get your thoughts too, and you can help me
(25:12):
and Twitter can help me make these picks. Would you
be up for that? Yeah, yeah, definitely, because you know what.
They want to throw me out of my fantasy football
league because they say I have an unfair advantage because
I'm a talk shows. Yeah, so like that means anything? Yeah,
like that means anything. I know. They love to take
down the people who work in sports, and so uh
(25:33):
these these guys I'm up against love to beat me.
Except for it's also worked like there's all the trash
talk in the draft. Try to trash talk when the
people on the on the zoom are my son's eight
years old, you're gonna trash talking eight year old, right,
So uh so we can dive into that as well.
And and unless we forget, the smartest one in the
room is is always Steve de Seger, and so not
(25:56):
only will he tell us what's trending, we probably should
just find out who he thinks I should pick. And
today is like my personal catcher. When I come in
the work on Saturday afternoon, I bring it. My first
thought was, you know, it's not an unfair advantage to
have Arnie as a talk show host in your league.
Clearly those people have not heard him and his predictions
(26:20):
as a talk show people would be inviting him to
their league. Replay the part about Garoppolo for two first
round picks, Artie, Arnie, you can join my league anytime. Yeah, exactly.
You can play poker with us anytime, any time. You're
right and a half. We've had a draft this early,
(26:42):
and then your draft picks wind up getting injured over
the next two weeks, so you're correct, it's too early
for this. But tip if you have a way to
place players in Q on your draft page, guys that
you like just in case, put them in there early
so in case it goes to auto pick or something
happens someone you like gets drafted for you. Great pro tip,
(27:03):
except for this draft totally offline. But they are. All
the guys are all in a room at a suite
at the Rose Bowl right now. They set up somebody
knew somebody, they set up a tour of the Rose Bowl.
They're in a suite in that stadium by themselves, about
to conduct the draft. And I'm sitting here four hundred
(27:24):
miles away with with with with a teenager and an
eight year old. So it's time to figure this out.
It's not timed then, Oh no, no, no, this thing
will be going And tell about eight I mean it'll
be you played for money? Do you play for money? No,
we played for the crack of Jackson. Yes, yes, let
(27:47):
me get that straight. You could literally take as long
as you want to make your selection, as long as
the word I was in a league like that last
year and I'm not kidding you. It was all done
by email and you could take as along and it
was seventeen days to pick. I'm not that's just well
(28:08):
back them on this had tell this story sometimes at
a great commissioner. One time we were all together, we're
the best of friends, were at a bar in San
Diego and and not time, and somebody started getting mad.
They're like, will you make a pick? Will you make
a pick? And the commissioner stood up and said, where
the hell do you all have to be. This is
the best thing we do each year. Stop trying to
(28:28):
speed it up. This is the highlight of not just
the weekend. We got a couple of NFL exhibitions going
on there. Halftime, Kansas City leads fourteen nothing at Chicago R.
And meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes did start and play six of
seven passing sixty yards, including a short touchdown. They're just
kicking off the second half halftime for Carolina leading ten
(28:49):
six at Washington. The extra point kick missed by the Commanders.
By the way, the regular kicker made the first extra
point kick in the Kansas City game the Chiefs and
brought on the offensive Beck, who apparently can make the
long ones in practice and he had the extra point
read with the with the second p a t for them. Anyway,
Caroline at ten six in the lead at the break
(29:09):
of their game at Washington, and they played three quarterbacks
already the Panthers from the first half. Baker Mayfield started
one series, four of seven passing and forty five yards.
The big news from the Jets that you referenced that
quarterback Zach Wilson, who heard his knee last night non
contact injury, will have Arthur's copic surgery, likely on the
right knee and missed two to four weeks so he
(29:30):
could miss the season opener. He was hurt last night.
It's a bone bruise and a meniscus tear, they say. Meanwhile,
the Browns had a center go down early last night
and their exhibition and Nick Harris likely is gonna need
season ending surgery for his knee injury. And Notre Dame
starting receivery Avery Davis has a torn a c L
in his right knee. He is out for the season. Two.
(29:52):
Major League Baseball, the Atlanta Braves had won three games
in a row. They're winning again today four two at
Miami in the bottom of the fifth coming up at
half an hour. By the way, that Braves game the
first of a double header. They're playing two to make
up for an early game that was lost due to
the lockout. Remember that Cleveland has won six in a row.
They're playing in a half an hour at Toronto. The
Cleveland Guardians our first place in the AL Central game
(30:14):
and half over Minnesota Twins have the late game at
the Angels at nine pm Eastern Time. And you reference
Fernando Tatis Jr. The Padre shortstop last night, was suspended
ninety games for a p D violation. He was rehabbing
in the minors after risk surgery and spring. He's now
out till May. The Padres have rebounded for three straight
wins and they get to play in DC all weekend.
(30:36):
They're at Washington tonight with you Darvis Show on the Mound.
Padres lead for the final wild card spot in the
NL by two games over Milwaukee. Back to you, hey,
cut real quick. Justin Reid for the Chiefs kicked a
sixty five yard field goal in practice. Uh and of
course the Segre told you at an extra point today
found a touch on the sixty five yard or in practice.
(30:59):
Get on but we were talking about practice, like was
there anybody rushing him? Or did he did he? Did
he just line up? I bet a lot of guys
could hit from there's nobody in their way. Yeah, Like
look bigger, stronger, faster. I think about this in baseball
all the time, like as we watch umpires get get
ripped because they can't see something that's a half inch
(31:20):
outside that's coming into a hundred and one. Like when
you and I were watching baseball years ago, an heater
was like top of the board. Now it's like now
it's just like run of the mill. And and so
what does that mean for twenty years from now? Is
it gonna be coming into a hundred and ten miles
an hour? Are we gonna be kicking seventy yard field goals?
(31:41):
I don't know, we might. Do you remember when Carli
Lloyd from the US Women's soccer Eagles can type of
thing line? Absolutely, yeah, exactly. Um, all right, we got
plenty of time to get into this. And by the way,
first three picks off the board in the league, and
I told you it's a two quarterback league, so that
totally changes the calculus of this. Already, the first three
(32:02):
picks Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes first three picks
of the draft. I have the eighth pick, so we're
five picks away and those guys are already gone. So
just be thinking about that because I'm gonna need your help.
Is a problem. But you're not supposed to take quarter
You're supposed to be doing the running backs, right and
that well two quarterback league. This is called a super flex.
(32:22):
Now this is different. So the quarterbacks are out of premium,
so they go first usually. So anyway, just just stir
that into your coffee and and uh and we'll figure
it out. But I do want to but just because
we're gonna get to this a time over the next
hour or so. What was your first reaction when you
saw the Tattoos news. I was I was shocked. I'm like,
how long is this guy cheated? Why does he get
(32:44):
to keep his contract? More like, it kind of gets
me mad that he thinks he's better than everybody else
and gets to do this. And then I started thinking
how much cheating really goes on if you have a
guy that signed what was it, a thirteen million, thirteen
year contract for the three D something I don't even
know what it was anymore, Um, does he really get
to keep it? And and by the way, how many
(33:06):
other people are cheating out there? How much cheating really
goes on in sports that we don't get. It's not
like it's the first time this guy is cheating and
we just caught him. How much cheating goes on in
sports plenty plenty, and we I mean, come on, we'd
be ridiculous if we didn't know that. And there's the
there's the big stuff like this all the way down
to the small stuff like Derek Jeter trying to make
us think that he got hit by a pitch like that,
(33:28):
Like that's right. Sports is not a Latter Day Saints commercial.
You don't go tell the ref that it was out
on you when they go the other way, like that's
that's that's But so that's not too excuse tattoos at all. Um,
But I kind of like where your head is out, Like,
I'm never really surprised anymore when when we see this stuff.
There's just too much money. It's too big a business,
(33:50):
so you know there's going to be improprieties if you will,
but there's too much protection. These poor NFL players are
out here banging their head off of each other with
no guarantees. You could be cut tomorrow. And Tatis has
this happened early in his career while he's hurt, and
the Padres are like on the hook for thirteen years
(34:14):
and three hundred thirty five million dollars and right now,
don't you think they're asking themselves the question do we
even know if the tattists that we've watched play is legit?
I don't even know if that's him, If that's what,
if that's enhanced tattoos that we bought it could be
if if the pipe, if you went to the Padres
right now and so we're gonna give you a twenty
(34:36):
four hour window, you could cut the whole contract and
and just let's say goodbye to him that you don't
owe him a dime, and he just walks away. What
do you think they would say? I think that they
would say, let's take that money and offer it to
Wuan Soto right now. I do, because it's not just this,
It's not just p E. D. S. It's been repeated
injuries throughout The injury itself came from a motorcycle accident
(35:00):
in which is outside of his You know you would
think contractual obligations, it's it's you know, it's it's way
too risky at at a minimum, you've had all kinds
of stuff. Uh signs if you will that that something
isn't exactly quite right, immaturity, if you will, so five
million for thirteen years and it doesn't get touched because
(35:23):
of this, like if I'm a team, that's that's not right,
that's not fair. Um, so much much more on this
coming up. Plus the greatest golf professional threesome in the
history of the sport. Wait until you hear this. This
is fantastic. That's all coming up. Plus I need help
with my first pick, which is apparently moments away with
(35:46):
Arnie Span your Mark Willard, Fox Sports Radio. Thank you
for sending this to me. Arnie. This is the funniest
thing I think I've seen all week. I thought it
was fake. I was looking at this, I'm like, well, look,
I'm not the golf officionado, but I don't remember three
guys with the name like that on the tour. I
don't remember this, but seven twenty a m T time
(36:10):
for the U s AM. These are the three last
names that have been paired together and you'll never convince
me this is an accident. The three last names, and
I have no idea what their first names are, because
all we get is the first initial. So the first
initial of the first player is M. Costanza, second player
(36:34):
is H. Newman, and the third player is C. Kramer. Costanza,
Newman and Kramer are playing together at the U. S
am what Frash I knew when she saw love it.
(36:55):
I had no idea that was. I thought somebody was
making a joke, and it was, you know, just you know,
somebody was pulling a fast one. But it's real, right,
I mean, I like, I mean it would be. They
need they need a theme song while they're walking on
from from Tina Green, don't they. I'm surprised you haven't
made any bets on that with your buddies. You know,
(37:16):
who are you taking in the threesome? There are you taking?
Oh gosh, let's see Castanza, Newman and Kramer. I gotta
I gotta vote for Uh. I gotta vote for Kramer
because I think he's gonna surprise everybody and catch them
off guard. That's what he does. And uh, and so
that's where my bet would go. But oh my gosh,
(37:36):
that's hysterical um at the USA. I'm someone's got a
really good sense of humor. More on tattoos in a second. Um,
I've made two picks. The boys made my strandslation the
eighth pick overall. Yeah, they zigged. They zigged while everyone
was zagging. The first five picks were quarterbacks, and they
grabbed me Austin Ekeler at the eighth overall selection. How
(37:59):
do you feel about that? Was that the first running
back taken out of out of the group. No, I
think it was the second one. I think Jonathan Taylor
had already gone at six. I'm gonna have to ground
my kids. I'm sorry, I'm you know what what, because
you know I would have waited. I like Dalvin Cook.
I know McCaffrey gets hurt a lot, but I have
to take a shot at him. No, no, no, Heckler
(38:19):
would have been like my third or fourth running back.
I'm gonna have to ground the kids for that half
point PPR. I've had Austin Ekeler, in fact, I hadn't
in this league last year, and he can win some
weeks for you. And the only thing that scared me
is it, go oh gosh, guys, we're gonna have to
wait till the second round for a quarterback, which is
usually a scary thing in this league. I don't know
if one of the guys I really want is going
(38:40):
to still be available. But Kyler Murray in round two
at the seventeenth overall selection, so that's our first two rounds.
Don't take. Team is very little party. Russell Wilson. Russell
Wilson was off the board in the first five picks
in the first round. Yes, yes, stop it stop, no joke.
(39:05):
I'm telling you. I'm with you. Yeah, I'm not high
on I'm not high on Russell Wilson uh this year.
But yeah, Austin Neckler, Kyler Murray. Our team is very small.
We're the shortest team in the league, and we're feeling
good about that. Yeah, I don't think. Yeah, I would
not have gone that way. I think I would have.
I like McCaffrey if he stays healthy, obviously that's a
big iffing. But I love Dalvin Cook too. We see
(39:26):
how he does this year too. Yeah. I mean, look,
any one of those guys obviously very very capable of
a very big year, similar to one Fernando Tattoos Jr.
Listen there's a there's so many different angles to this.
We were talking about the contractual stuff. I will say
this for me and we can talk about this more
coming up at the top of the hour. But the
(39:47):
word legacy comes up a little bit too much when
we find out about these things, because we don't do
that in any other sport. You you do pds in football,
we're just like, we'll see you next month. Legacy is
a big word right now. Guy's not even twenty five
years old. Yeah, that, well, in football is because we
feel like you we excuse it because it's such a
(40:08):
physical game that you have to get back on the
field and you've got to be healthy. So we we
make an excuse for the football players. Yeah, exactly, although
for Fernando tattoo is a very physical game as well.
He's doing motorcycling, he's doing baseball's doing all of this stuff.
Should the word legacy even be involved in this conversation?
Where do the podres go from here? All of that
(40:29):
is coming up next on Fox Sports Radio and we
even yeah, it's roll. As we continue on a day
where there is plenty going on. Deshaun Watson plays football.
Last night, the Jets get a huge scare and the
Padres get the absolute worst news they could possibly think of.
Maker Mayfield and Sam Donald doing their thing right now
(40:51):
as we speak with Arnie Spaniard Mark Willard. All kinds
of stuff going on. And by the way, real quick
on the on the bigger picture for the Padres. Um,
this team is obsessed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. You
know if you know this, I've right, I've lived in
San Diego. Um. There are rivalries in sports and then
(41:13):
there are obsessions. They're different. If you go to a
Dodger game and you say who's your rival, they'll say
the Giants. If you go to the Giants game and
you say who's your rival, they'll say the Dodgers. And
if you go to a Padre game and you say
who's their rival, they might say everybody, or they would
definitely say Dodgers, while Dodgers fans are like, you're not
our rival, You're a fun weekend away. So there is
(41:34):
no thing between l A and San Diego. It only
goes one direction, and it is that obsession that has
led the Padres to conduct themselves and their team the
way that they have in the last couple of years. Uh,
the Chargers leave town, so they're the only game, and
they've captured it perfectly. Tattoos comes out of the miners.
(41:55):
And they had already spent a little money on guys
who they felt were leaders, like Erica Mern Will Myers,
even though those were bloated deals. And then bang Machado,
and then they start trading Blake Snell, you Darvish, and
then boom, they give up the whole farm for Juan Soto.
They want huge names. They feel like their roster matches
(42:18):
up player for player with the Dodgers. Here's one problem.
Has anybody noticed that it hasn't worked? No, it doesn't work, Mark,
But you know what, though, I I'm sorry to jump in,
but you can't give them crap because they want to
keep up with the Dodging. You do you want to
be a fan of a team that says, hey, we're
not gonna sit around while the Dodgers just blow us
out of the water. We're gonna trying. Yeah, come on now,
(42:41):
you're absolutely right. And and the vibe at Petco Park,
you know, is second to none in Major League Baseball.
They're like Rich and I were doing the show last week,
and he works every day in San Diego, and I
admitted to him, they know, party like a Padre party
right now in Major League Baseball there, it's it's fantastic
down there. They got those City connect jerseys, they got
(43:02):
the gas lamp, they got Soto, they got Machado, they
got all kinds of stuff going on, and so they
are great for fans. The thing is, and I'm just
trying to put my finger on it. If it's not
one thing, it's another in terms of it's not adding
up like it doesn't. It doesn't seem to work for
some reason. There's been moves that the Dodgers have made
(43:26):
that have an add up either. Yeah, I mean yeah,
they the Hasmer trade, but they got rid of him.
He's gone now. So um look, you just have to
go ahead and keep making the moves until everything works
on out. Now. I don't know how this Fernando Tatis
thing is gonna work out. He'll he'll just miss what
is it, the eight games and obviously come back after
that and see what happens. But I mean, he was
still worth the money at the time. Nobody criticized them
(43:48):
for signing a player like that. No, absolutely, Again, it's
not criticism. It's almost like bad juju or something. I
can't put my finger on it. They this was it,
like they made the move for Soto and they were
gonna make the run to the World Series this year.
And when you have something like what happened yesterday happened
(44:09):
and all of a sudden that I mean, it's not
just you lost a really good player your thought was
coming back, but you also, uh, you've got this cloud
now hanging over that that that hits your your your
clubhouse hard when something like that happens. Yeah, it does.
But you were sixteen games behind the Dodgers to begin
with anyway, So I mean all the best you were
hoping for was to get into the playoffs. And and
(44:30):
you know, see if you could make any noise. It
wasn't like you were one of the Mets are a
great team. The Braves were playing red hot, uh, you know,
the Cardinals a little bit better. So it wasn't like
the Padres were the top four or five teams in
the NL. Uh, no doubt. Well, actually, I don't know.
I would argue that from a roster standpoint, there as
good as anybody roster I mean record wise too, though.
(44:51):
I mean that that I take the Mets over the Padres,
I take the Dodgers over the Padres. There's no doubt
about that. Um, the Braves have been playing phenomenal, even
the Phillies have started to play better, But that they
didn't show it earlier in the year. Um, yeah, I
mean the Padres. Man for man, you're right about that.
But my goodness, man, sixth team behind the Dodges, that's
that's terrible. Yeah. Yeah, And so obviously the wild card
(45:14):
thing is an option. What about the word we were
talking about earlier, legacy? Should should that? Should that even
be a word in this conversation right now? What we're
gonna hold it against for Nandal to tease that there
was you know, some type of p E D. No,
we're not gonna remember that. Heck, we're not gonna remember
that he's suspended eighty games. We will remember that after
(45:34):
eighty two games. Uh do we say that about Tom Brady?
Do we say look at his legacy with you know,
four games suspension or anything like that. We don't even
bring that up. So No, I I think that's overrated.
When you're talking about people's legacy, we forgive and more
most important, we forget as time moves on. Well, except
for that word that I brought up last hour, which
(45:57):
was apology. I actually think Fernando Tattoos got hit twice yesterday.
He got hit twice already because the first one was
just the news breaking. You are suspended for eighty games,
and you are, um, you are now a a caught
p D e D user. But what if we watched
(46:18):
through the years, if you just I don't know why
athletes don't get this, Like it's just sports and it's
just p e D s And I'm not saying those
aren't big things. What I am saying is it's not
like you killed someone. It's not like you robbed a bank.
If you go through the years and watch athletes and
(46:40):
look at the arc of the careers of the ones
who come out and go, well, see so there was
there was residue on a bottle and I so I was,
I had a rash. And then when you do that
as opposed to what Andy Pettitt, for example, did, and
when yeah, gosh, I really messed up, it's that easy.
(47:05):
Just say you messed up and and and everything will
be okay. You can go to Hall of Fame, you
can still sell jerseys, will be back cheering for you
in the stands in in three months. It's that simple.
I don't know why people are still coming up with
these ridiculous excuses. Yeah, but Mark, what really I don't
(47:27):
understand about this whole thing is what do you think
these pds do? Does it really help you hit a
fastball or a curve ball? Doesn't help you hit a
hundred mile an hour fastball, doesn't doesn't make you into
a better fielder. Know what these things do is help
you heal faster, help you heal better. They don't make
you better athletes. They just go ahead and make you
heal faster. Why you do you think? Do you think
(47:49):
of like Lebron be these he'd be hitting three point
shots or Westbrook would be hitting to be points. I
know where you're coming from, and you're not wrong. I
know it is. It's about recovery, and therefore it's it's
a trickle down effect. Like if you can recover quicker,
then you can go work out even more, and therefore
you can even become uh in a way, in a
(48:11):
matter of speaking, you can become even naturally more strong
because you can go like Barry Bonds, was famous for this.
He's like, I could work out like crazy for three
hours and then I could do it again three hours later,
And that's part of how he was able to become
so big. But on the other side of this, aren'tie
is is how does recovery alone explain for all of
(48:32):
the guys we don't even talk about anymore, Like, forget
the guys at the top of the arc and the
Bonds and the mcguires and whatnot, but go to the
Ryan Bronze of the world. That that wasn't just recovery,
Like you know, you you were good with p d
s and you weren't without. That can't just be recovery. No,
(48:53):
you're right, it can't be just recovery. But are you
telling me it made him hit the fastball on an
extra hundred yards or something like this? Without it, he
would have been flying out the right field instead, he
was hitting home runs on you know, well, actually, I
mean yeah, like, I mean I definitely think can this
change a warning track ball into uh, into a ball
(49:15):
that that that goes as you said, a few a
few feet further? Yeah, Like, I mean, we've heard players
admit that balls that are going to the warning track
are now going into the fifth row, like the one
thing I always wondered about with Bonds. For example, Barry
was amazing because of his hand eye coordination. It was
the best the game has ever known. And I'm like,
that's not steroids, you know, and and and Barry obviously
(49:39):
was phenomenal before he blew up, so uh, he was
already a great, great player. But they're also there does
have to be whether it's because you can recover and
work out more, or if it's because it just adds
muscle on its own, whatever it is. Yes, I think
the ball goes fifteen feet farther. Absolutely. Maybe you know
(50:01):
you're you're talking about baseball, But when I bring up,
let's say the n b A, you're not saying Russell,
I'll just take some p d s and my three
point shot is going to be a hell of a
lot better or anything. I'm gonna become a better rebounder
or I'm gonna become a better defender. I don't believe
that it helps you in your game. I just think
it does make you stronger, which obviously helps in the
NFL um but I don't think it makes you a
(50:22):
more skilled player. I guess is what I'm saying. Yeah,
but in in the n b A, a three point
shot is not missing because you just can't throw it
far enough. I mean, that's not the goal is not
to throw the ball further. Sometimes it looks like that's
what Russell Westbrook's doing. But but baseball is maybe only
alongside track and field where the goal is to just
(50:42):
make the ball go further. Like that's not what a
football player is trying to do. Patrick Mahomes sometimes is,
but he doesn't need anything. There's a natural gift there,
Josh Allen, Right, like there there there's very few things
in sports where in basketball or football or or hockey
where it's just like all I need is for the
ball to go further. But that's all it is. That's
(51:05):
a home one. Doesn't help him hit a single, doesn't
doesn't help you hit a double, all right, doesn't help
you hit it something between the third baseman and the shortstop.
But I don't know if that is. I don't know.
I mean, in theory, if you get jammed on a ball,
does that ball that the little looper, does it get
over the short top head instead of going into his glove? Maybe?
But then again maybe the little looper in front of
(51:27):
the left fielder now gets to the left field er.
I don't know. I don't know if it you know
what I mean, Like, I don't know if it makes
your average any better. But all I know, all I
know is the data is there aren't the guys who
use their their numbers go way up. So this to
me would be my terrible fear if I'm the Padres.
(51:48):
My fear is not the money. My fear is not
his legacy. My fear is not the fans getting over
it because they will. My fear is we just bought
someone who's not as good as we thought he was. Yeah,
I look again, we don't know what it does. But
you're right. If I had a chance to get out
of this contract, I think I may do it. Um.
You know, if they said we're gonna give you a
(52:09):
twenty four hour pass all or nothing, I woulna say, yeah,
I think I'm all out now. I I don't think
I paid that money for somebody I was actually getting.
You know, it's kind of like you're getting yourself married
and then you're seeing your wife the first time without
makeup or something out. Maybe that's a bad example. That
you want to get out of the marriage. Maybe that
was a bad one there, but you know what this
is there what I'm saying there, Mark, he has your
(52:31):
wife's seen you without makeup, army. That's why, that's why
I keep it dark. I keep the lights on. Yeah, absolutely,
all right. There were performances in the preseason that matter.
Will tell you a couple of them in terms of
who they are. The Zach Wilson situation, the Cleveland Brown situation.
(52:53):
We will update you on all of that, plus the
deliciousness of the beginning of the NBA season with our
any Spaniard. It's Mark Willard on Fox Sports Radio. Alright,
that is Arnie Spaniard, and I'm Mark Willard and I
need your help, Arnie. I need your help. I need
everybody's help. You did you send me a tweet though
that I'm going to uh vehemently disagree with. First of all,
(53:15):
because they misspelled your name like you're sending me this
tweet as if like see, I was right, and the
person uh tweeting you doesn't even know your name. Mark,
Artie aready already the one Man Party, very very uh
um well known character in Lake Tahoe. Uh Nevada if
(53:36):
you ever get a chance to visit Arnie already the
one man party takes over at Harvey's. But you are Arnknie,
Arnie Spaniard and Scorpio nine or tweets at both of
us and says Arnie is correct. I did not like
your first two picks, but Mark, you can bounce back.
I do like the first two picks. Um getting Austin
Ekeler in the first round and then getting Kyler Murray
(53:59):
in the second and update you. We've we've addressed our
receiving core in rounds three and four, Arnie Tyreek Hill
in the third round and then DJ More in the fourth.
We have a fifth round selection that is coming up
in mere moments, and my plan of grabbing my QB
two into a tongue of by Loa to put with
tyreek Hill has just blown up. He just went off
(54:21):
the board two slots before me. So, um, I'm I'm
not happy right now. You can play the board. I
love that you got you. You love that I got
tyreek Okay in the in round three and then DJ
More in round four. Are you okay with that? Yeah?
I'm okay with him too. I had him on my
fantasy team. So, um, he's he's a he's a good one. Again,
(54:44):
it's it's hard to tell the way they come off
the board for yours, but yeah, I like it. I
like your third and fourth pick. I like Kyler Murray,
just didn't like the Austin Ncleer one. Okay, so it
is my selection and here is here's what are looking at.
Uh now, um, I do not have my technical QB
(55:07):
two as of yet, and the qbs are flying off
of the board. So it's the fifth round selection. So
here here are my options. AREN'TI? Um the technical best
quarterback on the board right now? But this feels like
a tremendous reach would be Ryan Tannehill. The quarterbacks are
going fast, long gone, long gone, long gone the qbs,
(55:30):
Matt Ryan, They're all they're all gone. So the qbs
were down to like Tannehill and Daniel Jones and uh
and Zach Wilson who's now hurt and uh you know,
I mean this is yeah, this is what we're looking at.
Other qbs on the board, Jared Goff. So I don't
want to reach, but I also need to address that position.
(55:50):
But what about this Zeke Elliott? Somehow still available in
round five? What should I? I don't like him here?
I bet okay? A J. Dillon, Travis Etienne this is
what I'm looking at right now, or Deonte Johnson for
the Steelers. What do you think at t N is
gonna get a lot because he didn't play last year
(56:10):
because of an injury. And for your quarterback if Matt
Ryan is still on the board, Um, I think he's
gonna have a like Matt Row. Everybody's gone, yeah, gone,
all gone. I know, I know, so do I go Zeke?
It's a value pick, even though I know no one's
high on him. What do you think I would? I
would probably go Zeke right now, worry about a quarterback later. Uh?
(56:34):
And you like Zeke over et N and uh and
A J. Dillon and Deonte Johnson. No, I like a
t N number one over that. I would take him
first over everybody else you mentioned over Zeke Zeke? Yes, yes, one,
because that's that's the guy they're gonna be going to.
He's gonna be their lead premier guy there. Um who
knows if Zeke is gonna have even that guy has
(56:55):
been on the decline ever since he signed his new contract.
I'm ready to move on past him. Listen, listen, this
is just fantasy football. I'm not gonna overdo it. Because
you're my friend, I'm gonna allow you to make this selection,
also because I have your number. And therefore, if Travis Etienne,
who by the way, I drafted in this league last
year and then got hurt before the season even started,
(57:16):
If this doesn't work, Arnie, I I will be asking
for your address in Vermont and I will be on
my way come on by. I feel he's gonna have
a great year. I can't wait to see what he's
gonna do. We forget how exclusive he was in college.
Go for him. No. I like their offense and and
actually it leads to a conversation that I want to
(57:37):
throw out there because I thought Trevor Lawrence uh looked
pretty good. And the word out of Jack's camp, you know,
you get the urban Meyer thing out of the darn way.
And and now so here we are year too, Trevor
Lawrence Lance. These guys looked good in preseason games last night.
They're just preseason games, so we're not gonna overdo it.
But let think back to Dak Prescott. Remember when Tony
(58:00):
Romo got hurt in the preseason, and Dak Scott came
out and uh and and just went off, And there
was this national debate over whether or not it mattered.
H's it's a preseason game. It doesn't matter. Why are
we why are we worrying about this right now? Well,
it turned out that Dak Prescott a player, UM, not perfect,
(58:21):
but he's a pretty good player. And so even in
the preseason. I don't think it means but I do
you can tell some things the fact that young players
in year two, Trevor Lawrence, Trey Lance obviously bad night
for Zach Wilson for a different reason. But how much
are you buying into how good they looked yesterday? I
do put a little bit of stock into it, especially
(58:42):
when it's the starters and they're playing against the other
team starters. Um, you mentioned a couple of guys. I mean,
if there was ever a list that we were putting
together about guys that need to have a big bounce
back here, um, they would be right there on the
top of the list, especially Trevor Lawrence. Very disappointed at
his play last year. I can't remember a time and
I was watching a lot of Jacksonville game I can't
remember a time where I said wow, Well, you know,
(59:05):
maybe they lost, but boy did he have a great game,
or he had three yards passing, or he had a
couple of great long throws. He didn't wow me. I
don't remember any time just sitting there going wow. So
I mean I remember doing wow to Justin Fields, though
I remember doing wow, did Jalen Hurts to Kyler Murray? Two?
People like that to Trey Lance, But I don't remember
(59:26):
to doing it to him. So I think he needs
to bounce back and have a big, big year. The
eyes are on him, that's for sure. Mark. Yeah, yeah, no,
no doubt. I think I think the Jags are gonna
be I'm not saying they're gonna be a good team.
AFC has got way too much for the Jags to
be relevant this year. But as we hit the month
of August here and people are putting together their fantasy rosters,
(59:47):
I will say this, Here's one thing that I always
try to use as a philosophy when putting together fantasy
roster that most people don't think of. They just go, oh,
who's this guy and who's this guy? What team are
they on? That matters? Like there were are certain teams
I will almost draw a X through them in the
first ten rounds. I don't want any Jets. I don't
(01:00:10):
want any Jets. Why would I want a Jet? Right?
Why why would I want a team? It's like struggling
to put up thirteen points, Jets. You're saying that, but
yet you just took a t N and Jacksonville, which
is one of the worst teams in football. I don't
think that. That's my whole point. I think the Jacksonville
(01:00:32):
Jaguars are going to be a very interesting fantasy team
this year because I think Trevor Lawrence is going to
be a capable quarterback. I think they got two running
backs that are both very good. I think they've addressed
their receiving corps. And and even though I've laughed at
the Christian Kirk contract all off season because I think
it totally sent the wide receiver market out of control,
(01:00:54):
that doesn't mean I don't think he can produce um
I do. I I think the Jags, And by the way,
a team that doesn't stop a lot of people sometimes
that's good for fantasy because you've gotta go. You gotta
just keep hucking the ball all over the field. It's
the teams that play this slug it out defensive and
(01:01:14):
then inept offensive players style in cold weather. That's what
I I got no interest in that. I I don't want,
you know what I mean. I don't want any New
York Giants this year. I don't want any of them.
I was just going to bring that up though. I
was gonna say, I need to correct myself where I
told you Trevor Lawrence, all the eyes are on him,
he's the number one guy that needs to have a
(01:01:35):
bounce back. Here, I take that back, and you just
hit on it. The New York Giants. Barkley talk about
the eyes on him. He's he better, he's trying to
save his career. Forget about you know, being you know,
this guy might be a flood. If he has another
year like he's had the last couple of years, we're
gonna just declare him a bust to move on from him,
Mark Well and here and here's the thing about the
(01:01:56):
running back, Like I think so much of the NFL
is can text you all, uh, if I trust the quarterback,
if I think the quarterback can make plays that I'm
more likely to trust the running back. Quon Barkley has
gotten a bum lot so far his NFL career. A
major injury not his fault. Be no quarterback. No quarterback
(01:02:18):
that makes the defense go, We're not going to just
focus on stopping you. And so say Kwan Barkley, who
by the way, did pop as a rookie, has had
injury issues and he's never played it down in the
NFL where the defense on the other side wasn't like
stop that guy and we'll win. That's a bum lot.
So he he needs a quarterback before I can totally
(01:02:39):
assess who he is. He's not gonna get the quarterback.
He's gonna stick with the same one he's finished so well,
he's still gonna have. You know, he's still gonna have
Daniel Jones as they trade for somebody. So he'd better
find the way to go and have a big year.
This is a big season for him, no doubt, no doubt.
And then what about another second year guy. We watched
him last night. What do you think? What do you
(01:03:01):
think of the man they're calling Tray Area who? Yeah,
I don't know that that's that's the name, that's the
nickname here in the Bay Area. They're calling him tray area.
Tray area. No, I have not heard that before, So
you know, you caught me. You caught me off, Like,
who is he to talk about tray lands out there? Look,
I always suspected that this guy was not going to
(01:03:24):
be the air parent. I had big question marks about him.
I'm like, that was a stupid thing to do when
they had somebody like Jimmy Garoppolo. But as it goes
along now and the way he's looking, there's no doubt
he's the quarterback in the future. He's the quarterback now. Um,
they're in good hands with him. He may still may
make some dumb plays, but he looked good yesterday in
the in the one preseason game, So I like the
(01:03:45):
way you look compared to last year, that's for sure. Yeah. Well,
I mean if what they want is to be able
to stretch the field and they did not feel Jimmy
Garoppolo could do it, then that play uh to Danny Gray,
third rounder out of SMU, which is exactly why they
drafted him. That exactly what Kyle Shanahan wanted to see.
So that went well. Um, all right, Steve de Seger,
(01:04:05):
what is trending? And while we bring you in perfect
timing because it is my selection. Round six. Yeah, so
you're still thinking to Zeke Zeke is still available over here? No,
don't do that. Why don't wait a minute, it's round six, Steve,
that's all right, there's somebody else. I'm sure you can find.
(01:04:28):
Travis c t N's name come up? Yet, I just
got to the last yet him in round five? Yeah? Yeah,
I let Arnie make that selection. And is everybody shying
away from Camara this year? Camara is long gone? Really
not shying away from him this year? Nope, nope, not
at all, not at all. But they are shying away
(01:04:49):
from Elijah Mitchell here not playing in the preseason. Aly, No,
you're not playing, but he's he's been selected as well,
so supposed to be back by week one, right, nobody's
scared enough. If any buddy take the wide receiver st
Brown over Detroit. I like him a lot. How about
Allen Robinson? Has his name come up? He's had great
(01:05:10):
seasons and he's with offense. I'll take him. Josh Jacobs available,
I still think a J. Dillon A J. Dillon available? Yeah,
I think that's a better I don't like thing. I'll
look over this here Yeah. Two NFL exhibitions going on
(01:05:32):
right now, including early fourth quarter at Chicago. The Bears,
who were down fourteen nothing at the half, lead the
chief sixteen fourteen notable from Kansas City. After one of
their touchdowns justin read, the defensive back kicked the extra
point and yes, Patrick ma Holmes did play six of
seven passing sixty yards and a short touchdown. The other
game going on, it's about eight minutes to go in
(01:05:52):
the fourth quarter. Carolina leads twenty to thirteen at Washington
because the Commanders missed their first extra point kick. Four
quarterbacks have played for the Panthers, three in the first half.
They gave Baker Mayfield to start today. He was four
of seven passing forty five yards, and Sam Donald threw
an eight yard t d pass off the bench. A
game starting up in half an hour, we'll have Indianapolis
(01:06:13):
at Buffalo. They are eight exhibitions total for this Saturday.
The late games in l A Rams against the Chargers
ten pm Eastern Time. Jets quarterback Zack Wilson will miss
two to four weeks. He'll likely have Arthur scotpic knee
surgery after last night's non contact injury. The Jets backup
QB is Joe Flacco, and they opened the regular season
against Baltimore. Ravens running back j K. Dobbins is due
(01:06:35):
to return to practice on Monday after last year's knee injury.
The Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson said he wants a contract
extension done by week one, a month away, no negotiations
during the regular season, and the brown says center Nick
Harris likely needs season ending knee surgery. He was carted
off in the first quarter of last night's exhibition. The
Braves are playing a doubleheader at Miami. Braves have won
(01:06:56):
three at a row, and they're winning the opener right now,
four two over the Marlins in the top of the
eighth inning, Matt Olsen with his twenty three homer. Cleveland
Guardians have won six games in a row. They're up
one nothing at Toronto in the top of the second
The Guardians of the first place team in the a
L Central game and a half over Minnesota. The White
Sox are three and a half back the Dodgers. Among
the teams playing tonight seven pm. Eastern Dodgers at Kansas City.
(01:07:19):
L A has won eleven in a row. In fact,
Their record the last six and a half weeks is
thirty three and five. Milwaukee's at St. Louis tonight. Cardinals
are first in the NL Central game and a half
over the Brewers, and the Padres get to be in
d C all weekend. You darvish ten and five on
the Mounta tonight seven pm Eastern against Washington. The Padres
do lead for the final wild card spot in the
(01:07:41):
n L by two games over Milwaukee. Back to you,
all right there it is um, I'm sorry. You know,
sometimes at the end of a big meal, you have
a huge dessert and you go home and you feel
bloated and you just can't believe the decision. You may
but in that moment, Arnie, it's so hard to say
(01:08:02):
no to that big brownie that has vanilla. I scream
drive blot already. I did, I did? I didn't. Just
a sixth round of a twelve team. I mean, what
are we doing here? I like, I get it. I
don't want him either, but round six? No? Did I
get some value there? A little bit? Are they saying
(01:08:23):
that that the Cowboys have enough weapons, or that they
think that Zeke is overrated, or they just didn't wait
they who knows. This is a big part of fantasy football.
I believe when a big time player bites you, then
everyone comes back the next August with a grudge, Like
like Christian McCaffrey should be selected early this year, and
(01:08:46):
I guess to a degree he will be. But he's
burned so many fantasy players in the last few years
that like people are holding a grudge. And I get it.
Zeke looked maybe a little bit washed. I know the
Tony Pollard is there. I get it, um and and
but you're still You're looking at an offense that moves
(01:09:06):
the ball. And it's round six. No, I think I
think I'm okay with it. I'll let you know if
I feel bloated and a half now, I think you are.
I think it's a lot better than one of your
other guys in your league. Taking Russell Wilson in the
first round, I believe me. I think he's in for
a meserable year, a bad year this year. Yeah. Can
(01:09:27):
we talk about that in a second. The a f
C West, everyone has gone crazy over the quarterbacks, and
I think I'm with you right now. If I'm gonna
rate those offenses and what I think they're gonna do.
I think the Broncos are fourth. I Well, first of all,
as you mentioned that the division is just murderous, is
as hard as again. And the other thing is the
other divisions, I mean the other teams. They have offenses.
(01:09:49):
It isn't like the Kansas City Chiefs, even without Tyreek
Hill doesn't have an offense the phenomenal. The Charges have
a good offense, The Raiders have a good offense, and
they're all three good team thought their Raiders made the
playoffs last year. So um, I think Denver's got a
long road to climb. I I look, Russell Wilson's an upgrade,
but that doesn't mean that they're gonna get out of
(01:10:09):
last place. Um, just based on him alone. Well, the
one thing about Denver that I'll say, and it's like
in the entire John Elway era, like they had Baton
Manning come out there and had a huge year, and
then they won the Super Bowl the following year where
they were almost dragging Peyton Manning to do it um
and and and outside of that, like we've never seen
(01:10:33):
this team with a quarterback that you could really trust,
I don't know, you know, like right, like like Jerry Judy,
Courtland Sutton. Are these amazing players and we just don't
know because because we've never really had a competent quarterback
at the at the helm. That's my one question. But
(01:10:53):
I also think that great quarterbacks do not grow on trees,
and Seattle moved on from this guy for a reason.
Is this gonna be one of those divisions where like
ten and seven is good enough to win the division?
Not even know if that's possible mathematically, but are they
all gonna be bunched up where there's gonna be like
four games separates one through the top through the bottom,
(01:11:14):
and we're gonna be going into it. Yeah, we we
going in the week like fifteen and three of the
four teams. You can still win the division when it's
all said and done, you know. I'm I mean Tenant
seven won the the a f C North last year
and went to the super Bowl. That was the Cincinnati
Bengals were tenant seven last year and uh and in fact,
fourth place I think was eight and nine, Like the
(01:11:35):
whole division was separated by two games, So could this
be that? It could be, but there's there's just little
intricacies to each of these teams. I think what we
just said about the Broncos, Like, I don't know if
Russell Wilson is gonna look like he did to three
years ago. Uh, the Chiefs. I think we feel good
(01:11:56):
about the Chiefs always, but that receiving corps has been
flipped up side down. It's not just Tyreek Hill, it's
even some of the bit players to Marcus Robinson and
Byron Pringle are gone. Um, you know, they look like
they're redoing their running game. Will the offense look the same?
I don't know. The Raiders get a new coach who's
got a hell of a pedigree. Could that bring the
(01:12:17):
best out of Derek Carr, who now has one of
the best receivers in the game. Could they be amazing? Yeah?
They could. And then the Chargers on paper look like
they've got everything, which is what we say about the
Chargers every August, which is that they've got everything. But
there's that organization is rotten to the core because of
its ownership, and they never play a home game, which
(01:12:40):
is a huge disadvantage. It's a huge disadvantage in the NFL. Yeah,
but think about this, if the Raiders and Charges, if
the Chargers are the real deal, let's say that's true,
they are the real deal, and that the Raiders are
finally gonna go ahead and start clicking offensively, and maybe
they're a second place team. If the Chiefs are a
third place team, what chance do the Denver Broncos really
have of moving up when you have to? When you
have the Kansas City Chiefs as like the second or
(01:13:02):
third place team in that division, I think they're just
gonna be dead buried last. But you're but you're right.
This is gonna be a great offensive division. The team
with the best defense that was gonna win that division overall. Yeah,
which again, on paper, should probably be the Chargers. The
Chargers are the ones who are book ending your pass
rush with Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack and they've got
(01:13:24):
you know, Derwin James in the secondary. Like I mean,
the Chargers again, they should be a great defense. But
the words should it is right next to the Chargers
in the history books. It's like, I mean, Philip rivers
entire career was this where it's just like, man, this
is great for fantasy, Like they've got all the things
that they need and they just don't. I don't think
(01:13:47):
it can. It hurts them. When you say they have
no fans at the game and heard some about playing
home games, I don't think it really hurts them all
that much. They still have a little bit of a
home crowd. Um, you know, it's not like they're coming
in and rooting for the Miami Dolphins with the Buffalo
Bills or anything like that. There's still the home team.
So you've never been to a Charger game, it is,
(01:14:12):
it is unbelievable. If it's a major brand, If it
if it is if it's the Eagles, if it's the Patriots,
if it's the Packers, the entire stadium is overrun by
the road team. If it's a smaller brand like the
ones you just talked about, if it's the Buffalo Bills,
you know, then maybe half the stadium is filled with
the other team. But is there ever that home crowd
(01:14:34):
that makes it hard for the other team to hear? No? Never,
not No. I was wondering, what's the worst home crowd
in uh in in the NFL's at Jacksonville. Is it
the Chargers. I'm really not sure who it is right now.
I mean, I haven't been to them all, but I
have a hard time believing there's something harder than the
Chargers on on the home team. Um alright, a delicious
(01:14:57):
little nugget about the upcoming NBA season. Well, get to
that in a moment with Arnie Span your Mark Willard
on Fox Sports Radio. All right with Arnie Span, your
Mark Willard. All kinds of fun here this weekend on
Fox Sports Radio. I need to thank all of you.
I need my son's first and foremost. The good news
is is this offline draft that's happening in the other room. Uh,
it's on zoom and there's just the big board where
(01:15:19):
they're putting the stickers up, and um, my eyes at
age forty seven, aren't I can't even see what these
picks are. So thank goodness. I've got an eight year
old and a fifteen year old and they're like, yeah, Dad,
that's uh uh yeah, somebody just picked uh, you know,
Travis Kelsey. I'm like, I have no idea what that says.
So thankfully they're there and making some picks for me.
(01:15:39):
Thank you for getting me, Travis Etienne. Thank you for
making me feel good about Zeke Elliott and and and
Di Sega. Round seven, we got him. Anyway, Alan Robinson
was still available still avail. It's always good when you're
when you're thinking about making a pick and then you don't,
and then he's available again in the next round, and
(01:16:00):
you're like, Okay, we're good. That works. Now you feel
good about I think that happened to the Patriots six
times with Tom Brady. Actually, if you're if you're looking
at the end of the draft flag receivers, the Steelers
rookie George Pickens, people are continuing at about him. He's
he's a he's on my list, don't do this show.
They're probably don't listen nation. Well, I don't know. I
(01:16:24):
don't know. Well, my sons have the mute on when
it's not my pick because we're we're strategizing over here.
But I also know that this is on Fox Sports Radio,
so like they can listen to this. They're they're right
there in l A, Like, yeah, they can listen to this.
So I I got you. I think you're right. I
think that's an interesting lay around flyer. So tight ends,
not a lot of steers, not a lot have been taken.
(01:16:46):
I mean the Dallas tight end is still out there. Yeah, no,
I think he's gone. Hawkinson is still sitting there, I
I that might be around eight target. Well, what do
you think about that? That Dallas Goddard had a touchdown
for Philly last night. People shouldn't be it's fantasy. With
Jalen Hurts. Don't be scared away because you get his
rushing yards, of course, but it's not like he can
(01:17:06):
and in fact, a tight end would be perfect this quarterback.
He's got weapons all over the place. Now, I mean
when your first round receivers from the last two years
and Devonte Smith who was pretty good and Jalen Reagor
who wasn't. But when they get moved down the list
for an a J. Brown, that feels like a hell
of a core now, doesn't it. I'm high on Detroit.
I like Hockinson. If he's there, go ahead and take him.
(01:17:28):
By the way, I gotta correct myself real quick. Burber
when I said they should be fired for betting the
Chicago Bears minus three and a half, and I should
I should be given a raise for taking the Bears
minus three and a half their up nineteen fourteen. That's
three and a half minutes left in the game. What
a great pick. All that has to happen. It's for
the Chiefs to sit anybody who's actually gonna play in
the regular season, and the Bears shoot to the lead. There,
(01:17:50):
there's gonna there's gonna be a pick six, And just
because you've said that, there's gonna be a pick six
from some kid who's trying to make the roster and
he's gonna do a puer it into the end zone
and ruin your entire day. We sell, we shall see,
but yeah, three minutes to go there and the Bears
are who we thought they were or who you thought
they were. Like, they're winning. They're winning. You gotta get
(01:18:13):
I don't care if it's preseason or not. They're beating
the Chiefs. So but they were getting blown out with
the first team. They were down fourteen nothing. You know,
people are very excited in the Bay Area this morning
because it's something you you opened my eyes to it
exactly when it came out. Ladies and gentlemen, Ring ceremony
night on t NT October NBA opener, it will be
(01:18:35):
the Los Angeles Lakers visiting the Golden State Warriors. A
ring ceremony that Lebron can sit and watch live is
something that sounds pretty tasty to a Warrior fan right
about now, I was gonna say, tell me that wasn't
done by accident or you gotta love that. By the way,
(01:18:56):
could you imagine if like Copron didn't want to come
out to the court and didn't want to watch the
Star Moony or said you had to go to the
locker room for something or or something like that. You
got to make sure that the Lakers are watching everything,
and you hold the ceremony right in front of Lebron's face,
Anthony davis his face, and just kind of, you know,
saying yeah, yeah, because you guys are never gonna get
this again, so watch carefully. That's what I would be saying,
(01:19:17):
yeah exactly, I mean. And and who knows what the
Lakers even look like. I mean, you and I have
had conversations a month or more ago where it felt
like something was about to happen with Russell Westbrook and
and and you know, whatever it is they're gonna do
to sort of reboot because last year looked old and
tired and didn't work and and and there was gonna
be a k d trade and a Kyrie trade and
(01:19:39):
and then everything just went totally quiet, and the NBA
just went and hid for the entire month, like nothing
has happened. It's like somebody pulled the plug out. It's
like airplane. Somebody just pulled the plug out and you
can't see the landing strip and they plugged it back
and said sorry. Yeah, I figured that some of these
trades are still gonna go down. We just have to
wait for it to pick back up, you know. Yeah, yeah,
I mean yeah, you're right, they will go down. But
(01:20:01):
it's like that announcement snuck up on us where it's like, oh, wait,
there's a there's an NBA game two months from today
that counts. Oh my goodness, Like I didn't write like
we better better get to work here. Um, speaking of
getting to work, we will now do the opposite. Arnie,
thank you, thank you for your help, and off you go.
Yes uh for Arnie Span, your Mark Willard and everything.
