app and Serious x M eight three, So make sure
you check that out, uh t J. Now people may
not know this about you, but you are a as
softball guru like you have. I don't know how this
(02:09):
all came about. I guess maybe through necessity. UM, I
know how how much you are into things being done
the right way. You're one of them type dudes like
grab the rake off of one of the young bucks
and be like, see here, young buck, you don't you
don't rake it like this, this is how you rake it,
and then you show them how to rake it, and
then you end up raking up the whole entire yard
like and picking them up like this is how you
(02:30):
clean up the leaves and stuff. I mean, well, you're
not from the East Coast, so maybe you don't really
know anything about that, but that's the type of dude
that you would be. Um, So you learned to play softball,
so you value the level of of youth. You've softball,
you've youth baseball, Like that's that's a thing for you,
(02:51):
Like what what's that? Because it leads into our legendary
moment of this week. But I know you're real big
on on the youth side of of that that sport
in particular. I am, And obviously we all start because
of our kids. My daughters started playing softball, and I
just felt like a lot of things weren't being done
(03:12):
and handled the correct way from the coaches that they
were playing with. And you know me, I'm gonna voice
my opinion. I'm not gonna sit quietly and just watch
something that I don't agree with. So I've voted my opinion,
and the parents were like, you should just take the
team and I was like, all right, I had never coached,
(03:33):
and I didn't know much about it, but I learned.
I got around people that I could learn from, and
before you knew it. I mean, we were one of
the best teams in the country for three or four
years straight and everybody could attest to that. I mean,
we were one of the best teams, not just in California,
in the country. And I'm just big on doing things
(03:53):
the correct way. And if I didn't know something, I
would just call somebody that had been in softball for
thirty or forty years. He in this situation, how do
you handle this? How would you play this? They tell me, Boom,
never forget it. I got it. Will now I'll never
have to call you about that again. And that's just
what I did. And now my son is playing baseball,
and baseball and softball. They they relate so much that
(04:18):
I'm able to help my son. Will I be his
coaching baseball? Absolutely not, because there are people that know
the game a lot better than I do that I
want them to impart that wisdom into him because they
know it better than me. But I'll be able to
help him from a mental perspective and understanding failure is
going to come how to process that when we fail,
(04:40):
we still remain confident in ourselves, but we can. I mean,
it's it's just from the mental part of sports is
what I believe. I help these kids out more than anything.
And I'm still coaching softball and I don't have a
daughter that plays. I just enjoyed it and it's fun nice.
That is really cool, Okay, And I think what you
said is so relevant to our legendary moment in terms
(05:02):
of the development of these kids, and you know, just
the experiences and and what it presents. You guys will
recall there was a situation that took place during the
Little League World Series where the picture hit the kid
that was up to bat and was visibly distraught, um
and upset by it, and the the guy that got
(05:24):
hit came and consulted the young kid that got hit
came and consoled it. The picture. You guys may remember
that story. Well, there was a backstory to that story,
and we got the exclusive on this week's legendary moment.
Love Game Game presents Conversations with a Legen and now
(05:48):
this is your legendary moment. You talked about the sportsmanship
and you mentioned, um the backstory of of the kid
that got hit and and console to the picture who
hit them? What type of impact does that have on
the parents, because you and I know and in the
(06:09):
sports world, some of the worst moments come from the parents. Absolutely,
they are like, it's it's so amazing how parents can
lose themselves and the emotions and in the like maybe
the selfishness of wanting your kid to do well, maybe
(06:30):
wanting your team, your kids team to do well. I
think if they if they watch the kids and pay
very close attention to the kids when they're competing, they
can learn an awful lot. But I I usually have
an opportunity to talk to a lot of Little League
coaches and parents throughout the course of the year. You know,
in our society today, which I think unfortunately, everybody wants
(06:51):
to sort of Instagram and nobody really takes the time
to enjoy just the moment. They're always looking to what's next, right, what? What?
What's next? And I think that in sports, particularly mom
and dad at eight nine and tender more worried about
their child, boy or girl, whichever it is. What are
they going to play in high school? Are they gonna
play eight other than just enjoying of what they're doing
(07:16):
at that time. So what I tell them is I've
talked to more parents and more coaches that ten fifteen
years after the little league experience is over, say to me,
I wish I would have held that had that perspective
back then, because you know, winning are losing a little
league baseball or softball game pretty unimportant, pretty pretty unimportant.
(07:38):
And and you know, if, if, if parents would just
understand it, it's more about a learning experience than it
is about a competitive experience. Even at this level. That's
really what it is. It's a learning experience, all right.
So that was a little different from what I tease.
But to hear what I did tease about the backstory
of the character and the competition in the nature of
(08:00):
that at at that level, you can go to up
on Game Presents conversations with the legend that was the CEO,
Mr Keener. He was gracious enough to sit down with
me and share some really really cool stories. Now t J.
He did touch on something which I you know, I
guess it's it's cool to talk about right now as well,
(08:21):
even though it was different than than what I teased.
Um the idea of the experiences that take place with
your children when you're a sports parent. You know, you
you had the conversation point the other week about how
you're gonna change. I guess it was based off of
the keep to leave conversation that had ensued. Uh. But
(08:44):
parents can be the death of the amazing nous of
what that youth experience can be for your kids because
they're trying to live their dreams out through their children.
There they have an agenda for their children to play
Division One to play and the you know, the big leagues,
the pros. It's just it's it's one of those things
(09:06):
where sometimes that over zealousness of of how they approach
things with their own kids, it sucks the fun out
of the sport and out of competition for these kids.
So what like what you know, for someone who is
as intense about development and growth and competition as you are,
(09:29):
you know, how do you how do you internalize that?
How do you view that in terms of with with
kids and and how parents play a part in in
sports these days. It's tough because as a parent, which
we are, we want nothing but the best for our kids.
(09:49):
And so at times, and I speak for myself here
you crossed the line with I think we're motivating, but
we're not. Um, we think we're helping, but we're not.
And so we mean well as parents at least I do,
(10:10):
or at least I believe I do. And it's just
at times when they're a kid, Like when your kids
are playing sports and they fail, man, you feel like
you failed it. It hurts you more than it hurts them,
at least outwardly. It feels that when you'll think, I'll
think about some of my kids don't do well all
(10:30):
day they get over it, I'm like, ah, like it
will still like what could we have done to make
that situation and that outcome be different? But it's an experience.
They learn from it, hopefully they get better from it
and that sports life general everything, and so it's coming
from a good place, but it may not come off
(10:52):
that way all the time. I can just speak for myself. UM,
I'm a talker. If my kids aren't doing well, I'm
explaining we're gonna go over it. I'm a yeller. I've
gotten as I've gotten older, or probably just my experience
of coaching my older two kids. Uh. The yelling is
is uh not as much. You know, my son we're
(11:14):
playing he's playing flag football and he was like, we're
going to the game. He was like, we're driving. He
was like, we're gonna win. I was like, I know,
we're gonna win. He said, I just got one question
for you. I said, what's up. He was like, don't
yell at me today. That's what he said to me.
And I was like, I got you. And for him
to say that, I'm like, damn, I must be getting
(11:35):
on him to the point where it's bothering him for
him and say that or embarrassing him. You know what,
I had to learn what my son is. That's what
it is. Embarrasses very quickly in these young young cats.
They get embarrassed when you you raise your voice at
him because it's automatically insinuated that they're not good or
there's a problem when you're screaming. You know, I always
tell guys, I'm screaming to you, not at you, Like
(11:59):
I'm not. I'm not screaming at you saying ah, that's horrible,
what are you doing? Like I'm screaming at you like
the play is going here, the play is going are right,
So so it's kind of but it doesn't matter. It
comes off differently. Yeah yeah, yeah, I mean you know,
and you know my wife is like, just stop yelling
(12:21):
at him. I'm like, I got this, chill out. I
got this right. You know. It's funny. Last night was
the first game, probably in my entire coaching career that
I didn't yet and I feel like I'm losing my
voice right now. But I didn't yell. I didn't yell
as much. I delegate it. You'd have been proud of me, bro.
(12:41):
I delegate it like I let my my position coaches
um coach them up when they came off the field.
I let them dictate the um you know, the substitutions.
It was. It was a smooth It was a smooth operation.
And all I did was was make sure that when
I made a call, you know, we looked at I
(13:02):
told I told the guys instead of you guys overthinking,
I'm gonna be the brain, I'm gonna be yall's brain.
So all y'all gotta do as soon as they get aligned,
just look look for me, just like they look over
to the offensive sideline to get their play. Once they
look at our defense of of of alignment, look at
me once they get lined up, and I'll give you
what the play is going to be. We had a
(13:23):
smooth operation. I didn't scream very much other than to say,
you know, shift or or call it late blitz or
whatever it may be. But t J they responded in
a way. I was blown away. I was blown away,
and I was I was kind of ashamed to myself,
like you know what I mean, like man, like all this,
all this time, all these years, I've been going ham
(13:44):
you know, I Polly, I mean, we that's kind of
culture too, And you know, I guess for some reason
is to be you know, loud and and forceful with
with trying to urge guys on. But it always felt
like as long as they know that you love them
and you care about them, that that's what matters the most. Um.
But I think you know, that whole embarrassing aspect of
(14:04):
it or not feeling really like, you know, kind of
like you're all the way supporting them, it could could
shut them down a little bit. So anyways, as it
applies to our parents out there, let your kids enjoy
playing the sports that they play. If they're gonna be
great at it, it's gonna be because y'all supported them,
not because you you harassed them and badgered them, and
(14:29):
and and and did things that really really burned them
out and took away their their innocence and love and
and you know, just approaching playing the game. Let them
have the experience, experience it as a parent, and I
can guarantee you you will have a whole lot more
fun um going to watch your kids play, versus if
(14:50):
you're trying to get them a Division one scholarship every
single time they're up to bat or out there playing
playing football or basketball or whatever sport. It is. So anyway,
shots out to Steve Keener. Uh, we're gonna take a
quick break. On the other side of the break, we're
gonna talk Jimmy G. I'm interested to hear what t
J has to say. Is this one of those deals
(15:11):
where Jimmy G sees the handwriting on the wall and
it's about the pounce on it and take full advantage.
This is up on game and we'll be right back.
All right, Welcome back into the show. And if you've
been listening, you know I've been telling you about the
amazing opportunity that Draft Kings Sports Book has given to
you there the official sports betting partner of the NFL.
(15:35):
Make sure you download the Draft Kings Sports Book app
today and use code up on game for a special
offer when you sign up. All right, that's code up
on game only at Draft Kings Sports Book. Welcome back
into the show. Plexico's off today. It is me and
Mr Nice Hair, Fine Hair, longtail. Whosmnzada uh um. We've
(16:01):
we've been having some pretty cool conversation. Now, this is
a really interesting topic here because no one saw Jimmy
Garoppolo being back in in San Francisco. And if you did,
I mean then I don't know what your reasoning was.
I think there was a lot of things going on,
a lot of moving parts that would have said Jimmy
Garoppolo would have either been released or traded, but definitely
(16:23):
not back with the forty Nunners t J. And now
he not only comes back, but under a restructuring of sorts.
It gives him a one year deal, but it also
protects him from a trade that he doesn't want. There's
a no trade clause that was included I seemingly as
a compromise. You now have a a willing and able,
(16:45):
winning backup in Garoppolo. With Trey Lance getting named the starter,
I think that there's a catch to this. But what's
your take? First, man, it's uh, it's a double sore,
so to speak, because you always Trey Lancer's job. We
all know that. Oh you know, we're gonna give him
(17:09):
room for air and he can fail. We know that.
Does he know that? Yes? Will he feel that way
at all times if he's not having a success, Absolutely not.
He's gonna in the back of his mind saying Kyle
Shanahan has a losing record with all quarterbacks not named
(17:31):
Jimmy Garoppolo. I'm a quarterback not named Jimmy Garoppolo, and
so he's always gonna have that. And they can all
say the right, Oh, Jimmy knows he's the backup. Oh,
Jimmy's gonna support me. That all may be true, but
as soon as you hit adversity, the fans are gonna
(17:52):
be saying, we want Jimmy because we win when Jimmy plays.
The coaching staff the is gonna be we win when
Jimmy plays, they're gonna have to urge to put him in.
So how long will they be willing to allow trade
Lance not to play well. That that's the key to me.
(18:13):
If he doesn't play well, will they just say, Okay,
we're gonna give him this year or like what is it? You?
You don't know? And so, just to alleviate that, just
get rid of them. Just get rid of We're not
going to give them away. Just get rid of them
because they have made these rules. When I say they,
the people within the NFL have made these rules of
(18:34):
the quarterback gets babied. Every position in the league competes
except the quarterback position. Are you don't want to have
another quarterback here? Because why are you telling your starting quarterback?
That's what they say. These are the rules that you
guys have made. Receivers, you draft receiver, Do you call
that receiver and tell that receiver you're gonna draft another receiver?
(18:56):
Did they call you and tell you they're gonna draft
another linebacker? No, they just do it. But when they
draft the quarterback, it's a I called so and so
to let him know we were drafting him. Why why
can't he compete like everybody else? These are the rules
you guys have made in the NFL. So now that
you guys have made these rules, abide by them. Abide
(19:16):
by them. You guys don't want the quarterback position to
have competition, don't give him competition. If you don't want
him playing nervously, if you don't want him looking over
his shoulder when he throws the intercession, if you don't
want him wondering am I gonna start the next game
after we just lost a big game. I don't understand it.
They they're doing it for a reason, at least that's
(19:37):
how I look at it. They may be uncertain, And
you don't think Trey is gonna press human nature. He's
a human. Yeah, listen, you touched on it for me.
I think this is clearly a situation where they don't
they don't fully believe that trade Lance can ken win
(19:58):
for them. They're gonna give him the opportunity and and
they're going to try for him to have every opportunity
to be successful as the starter, but to sacrifice the
season due to the growing pains of of Trey Lance
not being able to get it done. How bad could
(20:19):
this possibly go off the rails? Is what I'm sitting
here thinking they were thinking, because ultimately, t J, if
you're going to bring Jimmy Garoppolo back knowing all the
elements that you just explained, knowing that he's the only
quarterback you've won with, knowing that he made it to
the nfc UH Championship round, knowing that he was in
the Super Bowl, and really, in theory, if you want
(20:42):
to blame it on him, you could blame it on him.
But if you want to blame it on the defense,
you could probably take a shot and blame it on
the defense and say, Jimmy Garoppolo gave them a two
possession leading the Super Bowl. This is the same guy
that takes a pay cut and is is the backup
now to the top draft pick that they've brought in. Now,
people will aim at his health concerns. Okay, fine, people
(21:04):
will aim at you know, can he throw the ball
and and and lead a team, you know in the
big games? And and it does he have the arm
strength or the accuracy or whatever else it is that
they choose to pick and choose on Jimmy Garoppolo. But
one thing I know is for certain to say that
you you're going to restructure him so that he can
(21:26):
stay onto the team rather than release him. That's that's
strike number one. Strike number two. You put a no
trade clause in his contract, meaning when, if, and when,
because Jimmy Garoppolo is like, look, it's better for me
to stay on a team where I know I'm going
to get another opportunity to start again, versus be on
the free agency market and not know where I'm going
(21:49):
to end up. Let me play myself into a trade
scenario here it is that I want to go into
that I want to go into. I get back in,
I start playing the way I need to play. Now,
my trade value goes back up, and and San Francisco
can't just get rid of me. Oh take him there.
(22:10):
We gotta get him out of here so that we
can preserve what we got with with Trey Lance or
whatever it's going to be that takes place after post
Jimmy Garoppolo. But this is strike three. Jimmy Garoppolo has
told the entire forty nine Ers team fan base, everybody
who covers the forty Niners that I will start again
(22:31):
and I am going to play for the forty Niners, which,
in a way, this this deal to me totally throws
shade at Trey Lance's ability to be the guy for
this team. And not to mention it it kind of
cuts his legs off from under them because they're always
gonna be his players, his teammates. Who you think that
(22:51):
that offensive line has built a chemistry and and a
rapport with in a relationship with who you think Kittle
and the rest of deep samuels have built up relationship
and a rapport with And if something doesn't go right?
What's the first thing T. J. Hushman's out is gonna say.
When his quarterback that he was having success with is
sitting on the bench behind the guy that isn't giving
(23:13):
you the success that you're you've been used to having.
What are you gonna sit there and say, put my
guy back in? Right? Put my guy back in? Well,
what are we doing here? Is the experiment over put
my guy back in? You know what the defensive players
is gonna be saying. You know what I would be
saying if I'm on that team and I'm sitting on
the on the bench and I'm on the sideline looking
at Jimmy g sit on the sideline with a clipboard,
(23:35):
and we're going back out there because our offense isn't
doing what it needs to be doing. Put Jimmy back
in the game. Put him back in the game. Experiments
over experiments over put him back in. This sets up
to be one of the more entertaining story lines that
could play out in the NFL this season. Make sure
you're paying attention to that. Let's get to our update.
(23:55):
I lo what we got. We will start Fellas with
number six Texas A and M playing host to Sam Houston.
Sam Houston actually played the Aggies to a scoreless draw
for the first eleven minutes of the contest, but Andrew

on television a short time ago and he offered this, well,
(26:10):
I'm not gonna lie. I'm drawn indeed Fellas College. Yet
that's what yet. Uh it is certainly officially back. I
load and we appreciate that was a good one. I
am drunk. Uh So, So before we get into this
(26:35):
this next topic with Baker Mayfield on the other side
of the break, we're gonna do our picks, so Burst,
make sure you have those those games ready to go.
And I know some are already under way, but we're
gonna do our picks before we get up out of here.
T j uh and And speaking of picks, Draft Kings

Baker Mayfield, he's going to hype up deal again. Bro.
I mean, he's he's back to the old Baker. Like
Baker's back. Baker's back. He's talking a little bit of
trash and he said he's gonna want that tail now.
(27:20):
Earlier in the week, he walked it back. We have
the sound on that. But this has been hyped up
as a revenge game. In fact, there are even T
shirts that are being sold by the former Brown's quarterback.
But here's what he had to say earlier in the
week after there were reports that he said he's gonna
get into that, you know, he's gonna get in that
ass against Cleveland Browns and said, obviously, I mean, everybody's
(27:49):
gonna write whatever story they want. There's history that I've
said in the last four years. I'm an extremely competitive person.
Everybody knows that I wasn't wanting to win, and there
were really an issue of me being parted back here. So, um,
I want to everything I do. That's that'll never change now.
But it's not how I phrased it. It's not even
(28:10):
what I said. So it's nicely that all right, well,
this isn't gonna be the first or I'm assuming the
last time that we hear Bakers say that's not what
he meant or that's not what he said. Um, Mary,
what's our what's our name? Burst Cabot that that writes
and reports Mary Kay Cabot, who reports for the browns. Uh,
(28:31):
if you guys know that, look that story up. But uh,
this this seems to be a habit that Baker has.
Baker lets them words fly, t J, and then he
wants to reel it back in. But there have been
reports burst do you have the article on the T shirts?
Like he is actually selling Revenge Games T shirts? Correct?
That's right. Yeah. He tweeted this out yesterday a picture
(28:54):
of the official Baker Mayfield merch. One of these shirts
includes it says Baker Mayfield off the leash, live and
in person, Carolina versus Cleveland one day only, with with
a picture of Baker with a dog collar and break
broken chains and all that. Uh, t J. Give us,
give us your take, sir, man, I don't listen, man.
(29:18):
I didn't mind it when Baker said I'm gonna ft
them up. I didn't mind it. I mean, that's how
you really feel. And so don't oh, I didn't say that.
Whether you said or you didn't, that's how you should feel,
whether you said or not. As another story, but he
should feel that way that he was drafted number one
(29:40):
by a team that no longer wanted him they painted
him out to be the scapegoat. In his eyes, he
should absolutely feel I'm gonna go f him up. That
should be his feelings. I guess again, as a quarterback,
you can't act and say certain things and be a
certain way. I get it. But his feelings are he
(30:03):
despises Cleveland and he wants to step on their throat
every single chance he gets. That's how he feels. I
hope Baker plays well because I just want a good game.
I want a good story. I want some excitement because
if Baker is playing well, you know he's gonna be
prancing and jumping around on that field, running his mouth.
(30:23):
It's just come make for a good environment, good football.
But whether he said it or not, I don't know.
Even if if he did say it, don't come out
and say you didn't say it, because that's how you feel.
And now you're trying to capitalize on him by selling
some shirts. Man, this generation man is it's kind of crazy,
(30:44):
but hey, always a businessman, right right? Yeah? Well, I
don't think he needed to walk back anything. He could.
He could say what he wanted to say, believe what
he wanted to believe, feel what he wanted to feel
in that moment. I know, when I left Washington the
way everything ended, I wanted to beat that ass just
as bad as probably Baker Mayfield wants to beat Cleveland.
(31:07):
You can say it, you know now, I will say this.
You know, the whole idea of giving bulletin board material
and all that, that's real. Um, But you know what,
if he's being the type of teammate that he needs
to be, his teammates in Carolina are going to take
on that that that weight and that pressure regardless. Right,
They're gonna be there for him. That game is gonna
(31:29):
mean a lot to them. It's going to be a bonding, uh,
come together experience for them to to look out for
him and and the respect factor that's connected to him.
I like it, and and I think, like you said,
I hope that it makes for a really good game
because I know I'll be watching it. I I want
to see how he plays. I'm gonna want to see
(31:50):
how Cleveland plays. Yeah, there's a lot of a lot
connected to Cleveland and what they got going on as well.
So I like the sound of it. I like the
way it feels Man Cleve ring set up Man Cleveland.
Literally they're gonna I'm interested to see how they play
this game. Man, short passes, run the ball, defense, win
the game. I believe that's how they're gonna play. Run
the ball and can they win doing that? Screen passes,
(32:13):
short passes, defense. Can they win doing that? That is
going to be the biggest question. And can they win
when when uh, when Deshaun Watson gets back. It'll be
interesting to see how that all plays out. Listen, we're
gonna get to a break right here. On the other side,
we're gonna do our picks for today's games. Maybe we'll
even do a little over and under with it, burst
(32:35):
because obviously we are a draft king show, so we'll
be back. This is up one game. We're gonna wrap

We will start with Oregon at Georgia. Georgia is minus
sixteen and a half. The favorites on DraftKings Sports Book
(34:20):
The over under here is fifty four and a half.
LaVar will start with you. I think they'll score more
than fifty four points, but I'm going to take the
over on or or excuse me on on the six team. Well,
how does that go? Lay the points? That? What that means?
Lay the points means you're going with Georgia, right, yes, yeah,
(34:41):
that's why I want. I want that, right, I'm going
to over and I'm taking Oregon. Oh wow, yeah wow, okay,
all right, well let's keep it with the pack twelve
sec Here we have Utah at Florida. Utah's favored minus
two and a half. Over under here is five d
one and a half. T J will start with you.
(35:03):
I'm taking it over and I'm taking the Utah utes.
I'll take in the over, but I do believe that
that the point spree it will be will be beat.
So what does that mean? You're taking Florida. I'm taking Florida.
There you go, there you go? Nice? Nice? All right? Uh,
this is the biggest game of the nation for most people.
(35:25):
This is Notre Dame at Ohio State. Ohio State favored
minus seventeen on Draft Kings Sports book. The over under
here is fifty nine. LaVar will start with you on
this one. Yeah, I think that that's going to take
the over on the points as well. And um yeah,
I like the seven team with with Ohio State. Yeah
I'm going over as well. And I liked Ohio State
(35:46):
buck Eyes of march their way onto the college football Playoff.
There you go, now, I said, Notre Dame Ohio State
is the biggest game in the nation for most people.
But if you're somebody like t J Hodge Manzata, maybe
this is the biggest game of the for you. State
at Oregon State. Oregon State favored minus two and a
half over under his fifty six. T J, how do
(36:07):
you feel about this one? You already know what I'm going.
I'm going to Oregon State. We win in, We win in,
and we will score a lot of points. Man, we
ain't losing. I'm gonna stay with the over. I think
there's gonna be points scored. And yeah, I'm gonna I'm
gonna go with my boys squad. I'm gonna go at
Oregon State. Go Beavers, beautiful. Hey, I went all packed
(36:30):
