Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports leaving the dream on a
fabulous Saturday, the first full Saturday of college football. Player minute, Husky,
How does that sound? V J? Hartman and Husky? I
like that. I like how you just did that off
the top of your head. But that's what greatness is.
Right Well, v J, I'll tell you what we have.

(00:23):
You've picked a good time to be hanging out with
me today on You know, I was a little weird
about by this whole idea we we had this last
year where the NFL when they expanded to the seventeen
game schedule, I suddenly realized, what what is this? You
gotta got a bye week before the actual season begins.
But what they have allowed is college football to take

(00:46):
center stage and started on Thursday, weight game Friday. We
got games today, we got games tomorrow, goes on till Monday.
So if you are a college football fan, I know
I am, I know you are. This is absolute dream land.
So we're gonna update you on all the college football
that's going on right now, all the top teams that
are going on, including the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs

(01:10):
right now with a seven nothing lead over Oregon. But
v J. I mean for us to I hang out
together for the first time here. And by the way,
you've been very generous and uh some of your unwarranted
praise and me. I mean when you say you know
I've I've listened to you forever. You don't know how
many times I've heard that. I mean, I I've been
around so long. I get guys that say I have

(01:32):
literally been listening to you since I was a kid
because my dad listened to you on the radio. So
I'm just glad I'm still here. No, I'm I listen.
I'm blessed to be working with you. Man. Thanks for
having me today. As I told you earlier, I text
Danny about three or four weeks ago, I said, you
know this, this Steve Hartman. Guys really growing on me. Man.
I like the way he does his job. I like

(01:52):
the way he talks sports, and it's fun and entertaining.
That's what I think sports talk should be as fun
and entertaining and not so combative, which kind of grown
into that with all the debate shows and stuff like
that today. So it's great to be here, man, I mean,
I mean, it's sports, right, I mean, you know, It's
interesting over the course of my career in television where
they try to steer me into the news. You know,

(02:13):
you could be an anchor, and I'm like, I have
no desire to be an I like to stay in
the toy star, which is football, baseball, basketball, hockey, you
name the sport, I am there. So we got a
lot of college football today. Let me ask you VJ.
Right off the top, though, Man, where's your passion lie
as far as college football? Because I've been in Michigan
Wolverine fans as I was about five years old, and

(02:35):
starting with Anthony Carter and then went on to all
the great names, Tyrone wait Lee, Charles Woodson, Mike Hart,
Byako Patuca to Shamanga Biako Patuca. Gotta make sure you
stay the whole name. So I'm all about the big
house man, all about and all about the amazing blue
Thank you, thank you, Yes. And it was so good
to see them put a fifty burger up just now,
just finished the game and then got dressed and got

(02:55):
over here to the studio. So my alliance lies into
the day I die of ann Arbor into Michigan Wolverines.
All right, Two things, because I do want to get
to that game today, especially after Jim Harbaugh made it
clear that yes, I did, you know, take a look
at the NFL. But I'm happy to be back here
at Michigan and want to win a national championship. But yeah,
you'll you'll appreciate this. In six I'm part of the

(03:18):
u c l A broadcast team and I'm in the
Big House. First time I've ever been in the Big
House n And this was Charles Woodson's sophomore year. So
it's the year before they won the national championship and
they're beating u c l A's ass all over the field.
It's thirty eight to three Wolverines and they're clearing out
the bench in the fourth quarter and they bring in

(03:39):
this quarterback and his first pass, he gets hit as
he throws and U c l A gets a pick six.
And I remember on the air, I said this, all right,
so this Tom Brady guy that just came in and
made his first appearance, this guy, I guarantee you will
win seven Super Bowls. Actually I did not say though, um,
but I actually still have my credential from that game.

(04:00):
I've been offered, uh, some pretty good money for this
I'll even show you a picture here. I gotta I
actually have a picture there. It is. That is my
credential of Tom Brady's first ever college football game. And
uh yeah, and his very first pass, just like his

(04:20):
last pass as a Patriot, turned out to be a
pick six. Yeah. I actually loved that era because I
remember the Drew Hinson Andrew Hnson was the quarterback there too,
and actually Lloyd Carr would actually alternate them quarter for
quarter for like seven games that year. And then of
course stein Brenner came with the big twenty plus million
dollar contract for Hanson. Then he realized he couldn't hit
a curveball. By the end, it was too late. Tom

(04:41):
takes him to an eleven in one season. They beat Alabama,
Sean Alexander and those guys and a triple overtime game.
David terrell A trained Anthony Thomas the running back. So yeah,
that's that was the start of Brady. But Brady should
have been the starter of the whole time, and I
think we probably blew a national championship by not starting
him earlier. Well, and I remember great showdown he had
with Drew Brees that produced That was a good rivalry

(05:03):
there and it's amazing how that continued on for many
years after that in the NFL. So let's let's talk
about about Michigan today. As you mentioned, they put a
hurting on Colorado States starting out their season in the
big win fifty one to seven. Uh. This whole dynamic
of Jim Harbaugh courting the NFL in the off season
after the big year, the Wolverines had a year ago
obviously a disappointing loss in the National semis. But what

(05:27):
what where does he stand? I want to hear this
from a Michigan guy, John paulm Rossi is our other
resident Michigan guy. That's what he's talking about Michigan football.
But in your mind Harbor was brought back to Michigan
as the savior. What he did initially at us D,
then he did at Stanford, then he would did with
a forty Niners. I mean, this guy was a miracle worker.

(05:48):
He was taking bad situations and not only making them better,
but like much better. And it just hasn't been there
yet with Michigan. They did have a breakout season a
year ago, got clobbered in the National Semi. So where
do you stand with Jim Harball. I love Jim Harball.
Jim Harball is gonna win US a national championship, you
mark my words. Is either gonna be this year or

(06:08):
next year. They're gonna win a national championship. He had
his shots before two. If people remember when Wilton Spate
was the quarterback there, they started eight and oh nine
and know they're going to Iowa. He gets hurt in
pregame and they lose on the last second field goal.
Bad spot in the Ohio State game. Okay, on the scramble,
there's another opportunity. He's had them right on the doorstep
and then got over to hump. Last year got to

(06:30):
the National UH College Football Playoff. Georgia was the national champion.
So there's no shame in saying we got white, we
got slacked, We got scraped up and down the field
by the eventual national championship. This year is all about
finished the job, unfinished business. Anybody's gonna take a h
an interview with the NFL. It's the NFL Steve. Anybody's
gonna take that. So he had to do that. But

(06:52):
he know where his bread is buttered. You got a
good young recruiting class. You got two quarterbacks. You can
use running backs, receivers. The defense is not gonna it's
a step and step up. He did the right theme
by coming back. I think all is well and in Arbor.
It's the outside noise and media that was talking on that.
Everybody in Arbor knows he's the guy he was gonna stay. Yeah,
let me check the NFL a little bit. But I
got something brewing here and I think he wants to

(07:15):
finish off the job. One interesting things so far in
this a weekend. Preseason polls are always ridiculous. They usually
based on obviously what they did a year ago, and
then we find out very early in the season which
teams were vastly overrated. Yet so far this weekend, not
a single top twenty five team has lost. Now we

(07:35):
got a battle of top twenty five is going on
right now. Georgia defending national champion taking on Oregon. By
the way, we've been getting complaints about Oregon and their
green like they look invisible on the green field. They
do and it's hard to see. And I love Oregon.
I love with feeling nice done with that program in
the uniforms and the branding, but they should smarten up
with some of these uniforms. If you're looking at the

(07:57):
screen right now, it does look like they're blending in
with the with the field. This was this was a batch.
Shouldn't one team be wearing light and dark? How are
both teams both wearing George is in the red and
they're in all green. Well, it's not a home game,
that's the whole point. It's called a neutral side game,
so I guess they chose it that way. Georgia knocking
on the door about a half yard short of a

(08:18):
touchdown there, So Georgia already up seven nothing coming to
the end of the first quarter right now, and UH
Oregon defense holding up. They keep them out of the
end zone for now. Another game we're watching right now
is a debut game for a brand new stadium for
San Diego State University. They're taking on Arizona. The Wildcats
are leading this game by a game score a three

(08:40):
nothing four minutes ago. Obviously, VJ. You know, I've been
in San Diego for the last eight years, just recently
announced that I'm leaving the San Diego area to return
to l A. But San Diego State great program, and
they're sort of in the crossroads right, because they're hoping
to maybe find themselves in the pack twelve with the
vacancy coming up with USC in U C l A.

(09:03):
And one way to impress people is to get a
new stadium done. So the old stadium that was there
for years with a home of the Chargers, that thing
is gone and they have a thirty five thousand seats stadium.
Now I'm looking at the crowd today, and if you
don't know this, I know there's a lot of heat
going on all over the country. It is cooking in
southern California right now. Yeah, it's ridiculously hot. This is

(09:26):
dangerously hot. This is stay inside hot. This is the
barbecue starts at seven pm hot like now. And you
know we're not sitting on my backyard at one in
two and three. I would you like to be at
the Rose Bowl right now? U l A Is playing bowling. Yeah,
I just checked in on that before I left the
house too. But if you look around that stadium, the seats,
the seats are plenty al same thing in San Diego

(09:46):
State now, but their big debut. They sold a lot
of tickets for this game. But right now San Diego
State Arizona is this a touchdown. I think here for
the Wildcats, it might well be. I thought it was
touched down live. I didn't. I didn't. I'm trying fair.
I want reviewing that and it was so Arizona just scored.
Uh the extra point is good. Ten nothing. Arizona trying

(10:07):
to really bounce back. Arizona has been down the last
couple of years in the PAC twelve uh ten nothing
lead on the road at San Diego State. All right,
just getting started v J. But big story coming out
this weekend is the expansion of the college football Playoff.
What does this mean for college football? And how is

(10:28):
this thrown a wrench into things as far as those
players future in the NFL. We're gonna break it down
coming up next. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports

(11:11):

Ben Mallow on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast
or wherever you get your podcast. Steve Harvan VJ. Husky. Here,
this is Fox Sports Saturday, Georgia leading Oregon fourteen and
nothing right now, six to go in the second quarter.
In that game, will continue to update you on all

(11:33):
the scores around the college football scene. It as an
all college football weekend. Later on, of course, we'll also
get you ready for Week one of the NFL, which
will begin Thursday out at Sofi Stadium, when the Rams
will be hosting the Buffalo Bills. Have you been out
to Sophie, Not yet, but I will be there for
a couple of Rams games. And when the Dolphins com
played a Chargers, I'll be at that game also, So

(11:55):
I'm super exciting. What game for the Dolphins and Chargers?
Dolphins Ars. Actually, I'm gonna take my boys to the
Money Night game. They're playing the Broncos. It's the only
PROD game yeah, they have Broncos Chargers Money night football
mid October. I went to a game last year. It
was the unbelievable Thursday night game against the Chiefs where

(12:15):
the Chiefs came back, ended up winning that game and overtime.
Let me give the little warning there. So the boys
and I are sitting in the second deck trying to
get in and out of that place. Have you never
been there before? Good luck, the science aren't there. Well,
once you're inside, the size of that place is just
mind boggling. But the game ended again, it was overtime,

(12:37):
and we were in the front row, second deck end
zone right beyond the goal post. Great seats from the
time the game ended until the day until when we
exited the parking lot at so far hour and a half. Wow.
From getting out of our seat at the end of
the game to actually pulling out of the parking lot,

(12:58):
it's so far was an hour and a half, and
it was a night game. And you know what, That's
why I like sitting at home. I like just paying
for packages. I like saying I like I listen, I
got tablets, I got I got all types of stuff
going on in my house. Man to watch football and
watch every game and and rewatching DVR, and I'm a
football junkie. Man, I'm psychotoc with it. So but I

(13:20):
do want to go because I I was. I've always
been a Matthew Stafford fan, even when he was back
to high school. I was defended on when he was
in Detroit. And I love seeing him when I picked
the Ram to win last year on our preview show
on my own show, and I I love. I want
to see him play live, and there's some other players here.
I'm going to the Cardinals game. I want to see
Colin Murray play live. And then of course you know
my Dolphins. Man, I gotta see two and Waddle and

(13:41):
and Hill and all the weapons. So I'm excited to go.
But that story right there makes me think about some
of these other games. I might go, Hey, anybody wants
some Rams tickets. You know I got them for you
if you want them. I don't want to be an
hour and a half getting out, But it looks like
it looks like a mess to try to get out
of there. It does. Oh, it's unbelievable. And the food,
forget it. Don't get me started anyway. That aside, big

(14:03):
story out of college football. Yesterday, the FBS commissioners all
ten conferences got together and it's a done deal. We're
gonna get an expansion of the college football Playoff by
at least, but they're hoping as soon as four and
finally we would have enough schools involved to actually call

(14:26):
it a playoff. I remember when they introduced the so
called four school Playoff, A couple of things were sold
on this VJ. One was the idea that, well, now
we're going from the old BCS with two schools to four,
many more schools have an opportunity to win a national championship.
And immediately when it happened, I said, this is not

(14:47):
going to work. Let me explain why you have five
power conferences. Who's going to get left out? That's problem no. One.
The other part of this entire thing is that a
committee was deciding which teams are going to get in,
and anytime you have committees involved, that could be problems.
But also what we've seen over the years of this
college football Playoff, it made the superpowers even more powerful.

(15:11):
Every year, what do we get Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State,
So those those schools got more powerful. The semifinal games
have been blowouts for the most part, so it never
actually worked for them. Now, what we're talking about is
the six conference champions that are the highest ranked champions,

(15:32):
and then six at large bids. The top four seeds
get a buy, and then we have a playoff and
anytime you can add games at the end of the
season that actually matter. VJ. As a college football fan,
sign me up and sign you have to a few
things you made really good points on I said the

(15:53):
same thing when this playoff came out. I told people,
if you hated the BCS, okay, you're gonna hate this
even more. So what if you hate it. If you
hated that, just give me too. That's fine. So I
don't always get to SEC teams guaranteed into the playoffs.
And then Dabble was able to recruit de Sean and
Deshaun was able to be Alabama and then go to
and go to UH to the College Football Playoff and then,

(16:15):
like you said, Ohio State. So that third team, which
is almost like a pick up, Okay, well, let's let
them in this year. Let's let's Cincinnati in last year.
Let's let's so Notre Dame apame exactly. Klahoma was there
and four times they were in the playoffs, and the
Pact twelve basically got shut out the pactwell, and the
Big twelve, the Pactweve and Biel just got completely shut

(16:36):
out of it. And then also you mentioned five power conferences.
But No Order Dame's an independent, so now you're leaving
out even more teams. No Order Dame actually can still
a conference champion spot by being an independent. So I am,
I am emphatic about this twelve playoff system that they're
gonna come with. They need to start this next year.
I don't want to hear about all the samanager and stuff. Listen,

(16:57):
you're to n C double A your billions and billion
of dollars. Okay, make this start next year. I don't
want to wait till six that's ridiculous. Get this going
next year, Steve, all right, but there is a potential
problem that perhaps with all the money that's being funneled
into the college football players hands can be resolved. But

(17:18):
here's the problem. DJ. All right. Let's say let's say,
for argument's sake, you're Georgia and you're the five seat,
so you're gonna be playing in that opening round, and
you have a quarterback that's being projected as a top
five pick in the NFL draft. All right, So I'm
that quarterback and I'm getting ready for the NFL draft,

(17:38):
and you're telling me that I have potentially to play
four more games. We have guys backing out of bowl
games left and right that aren't for a national championship.
But at some point you could see this happening where
you're one of the teams in the playoffs, especially if
you're gonna have to play that opening round game where

(17:59):
you see between five even twelve and you've got players
that are looking forward to the NFL draft saying I'm
not gonna risk four more games where I could get
hurt and lose my draft capital. Good luck, guys, wish
you all the best. I'll be watching on TV. Now,
how do you counter that? It's very simple. You pay them,
thank you, You pay them, and you pay them extra

(18:21):
saying alright, quarterback, here's what we're going to do. We
got that collective, We got lums all over the place.
You want our quarterback to be playing for a potential
national championship. He's eyeballing the NFL. How are we gonna
keep him on the field? That's very simple. We're gonna
sweet in the pot. In fact, to tell you what
free game you win, we'll sweeten the pot even more.

(18:42):
We'll keep you in the mix. You're not going anywhere
until the job is done. So this you know this name, image,
likeness situation. Actually, the timing for this could not be better.
I wrote it down as you were just saying what
could be the problem. This is how you solve it.
You already put out there in the n I l S.
Put it in the n I L S. You want

(19:03):
this money, Okay, we can't have you sitting out in December.
In January, you gotta play. If you want this money
in this name, image and likeness money, you have to
show up and you have to play. I think that
would solve all of these guys. Also, sitting out for
your draft capital, you can get hurt in September for
your draft capital. You get hurt in October. You can
get hurt in November. This thing about getting it's football,

(19:25):
ladies and gentlemen. It is not a contact sport. My
old middle school coach coach might come into us to
say it's a collision sport. It's not a contact sport,
and when you're colliding with someone. Injuries are going to happen.
But you're right. Pay the kids, coaches, stop crying and
winding about it. It will help even the playing field.
We're get any super conferences now. So now if you
finished second in the Big ten, you don't have you

(19:46):
you still can get in. You don't have to worry. Well, god,
I I pretty much gotta go twelve and one. They
get No, you can go ten and two. You can
drop a Michigan States Saturday night game on the road
by field goal, and maybe you lose the Michigan or
maybe you lose the Ohios. That okay, fine, but you'll
so beat the team. Beat these things. Beat the team.
You're still one of the top twelve teams to get
into the playoffs. Well, the group of five conferences obviously
are guaranteed at least one slot in the twelve team

(20:08):
playoff because it's the sixth highest ranked conference champions. So
that's your power five plus one, and then you have
the large team. So it's gonna work. I think VJ
will see it earlier rather than later. They're talking about
as early as I'm with you, I'd like to see
it in three. Look follow the money. If you if
you're guys curious as we all are in the future

(20:31):
landscape of college football with teams moving from one conference
to another conference, if you're trying to figure out the dynamic,
follow the money. The reason that USC and US Jail
are moving to the Big Ten is that they are
in Los Angeles. It is a market that Fox wanted
in order to guarantee the Big Ten that huge deal
which they ended up getting. It wasn't I believe me.

(20:54):
I'm a u c l A brewin. U c l
A hasn't been relevant in football forever. I mean the
one they haven't been to a rule. They won a
conference championships in all right. I was Sam, by the way,
who's celebrating? I was convincing seven to three victory. By
the way, that seven would not a touchdown. You see
this defense as bad as your offense is last you

(21:19):
believe me, they're more challenges year. What do you have?
What are your thoughts on the playoff? Here saying well,
it's actually about U c l A. I was just
I was watching that Colorado TCU game last night, which
was not very competitive. TC ended up running away with it.
But the last time u c l A. I believe
had a ten win season. It was Carl Durrell coaching team. Yeah,
but they also got annihilated by USC. I was at

(21:42):
the at the coliseum that night when they put up
sixty six on U c l A. So any glory
from a ten win season was extinguished that day. By
the way, my bruins are up at the halftime twenty
four to seventeen. Dorry and Thompson. Robinson one of many
quarterbacks that seems to be in his tenth year as
a starting quarterback, you know those extra COVID years and everything. Seriously,

(22:03):
this is his fifth full season as a starting quarterback.
I mean he's been there forever. I keep looking up like,
is this the only quarterback we're gonna get under Chip Kelly?
The big half twenty two a thirty two and eight yards,
a couple of touchdowns and a pick plus he ran
for a sixty eight yard touchdown. Not a bad deal
in the in the Purdue Penn State game, wasn't Wasn't
that a fifth year senior in a six year senior.

(22:26):
They're one Guy's guy. One guy like has a two
year old he's been married for like three years. Like
it's it's amazing how these kids can stick around. And
I'm not knocking it. I love it. I love that
kids can stick around. Listen, if you're not ready for
the NFL, it's not fair to push guys out if
something happens and they could come back and play a
fifth or six year Like what do you care if
you're in a double A or you know, what do
you care? Let the kid come play and and and

(22:48):
I love him, man, but you're right. U. C l
a Uh hasn't been relevant. And here's the thing. I'm
a chick Kelly guy. I thought he would really come
here with the soul, cow talent. I call high school
football for Fox Sports Weston and they will did over
to Balley. So I do Bosco, I do modern date
Cincineo Oaks, Chris. I see these kids, and I thought
him coming here he would really keep some of that hometown.
Get this speed, this size and athleticism. Want to feel

(23:11):
for U. C l a. But it just um hasn't materialized,
not yet. But right now they're up seven and a
half on let let's get much more on what's trending
right now, because here's a man that has certain ties
to u c l A. As well. Our dear friend
Brian Finley is here v J and Steve. Good to
hear from you guys on this college football Saturday. How

(23:32):
are you feeling today on this full schedule of college football? Well,
speaking of the Bruins of U c l A. At
the Rose Ball was a little bit nervous. They were
down seventeen to seven to turnovers in the first quarter.
But things have turned around a little bit for Dorrian
Thompson Robinson twenty four to seventeen. As you mentioned Steve
against Bowling Green at the half dtr Dorian Thompson Robinson

(23:54):
two scorers through the air and one on the ground.
Zack Charbon a bowling ball of a running back formerly
of vj's Michigan Wolverine eight two yards on the ground
on fourteen carriers. Thanks for him because he's really good.
He was good last year. He's gonna be even better
this year. Well, he just wasn't a big tin running
back and he showed that real fast, so you guys

(24:15):
can go. I called his games that Oaks Christian he
was there with. Oh yeah, those are some really good
high school football teams. We'll get to the Michigan score
in a moment. But right now our eyes are on
number three Georgia as they're taking on number eleven Oregon.
I formation handed to Milton No, Bennett fakes and rolls
out into the corner. Touchdowns. That's Bennett, boy. He had

(24:38):
me food and he's running for the pilot. Sire Georgia
Radio Networks. That's in Bennett, like Dorian Thompson Robinson going
into his fifteen season as a college quarterback. He's gonna
turn twenty five later this later this fall. But Bennett
has a touchdown. He has twelve or fourteen through the
air for Georgia and they're leading the Ducks with about

(25:00):
nine minutes remaining of the second quarter, fourteen to nothing.
We've got you tap trailing Number nine Oklahoma twenty one
to three. Early second quarter. That game could be seen
on Fox Television Dylan Gabriel. The u c F transfer
at QB for the Sooner is one twenty eight yards
through the air and one touchdown. Other mentioned here Games
in progress. Number sixteen Miami having their way with the

(25:22):
Thune Cookman one to three. Early stages of the second quarter.
K J. Jefferson has thrown a touchdown for Arkansas number nineteen.
Those Razorbacks are leading Luke Fickle and number twenty three
since then had the seven to nothing early moments of
the second quarter. Want to get two guys, just a
couple of games that have already wrapped up, but one
that hasn't started up again. That would be Texas a

(25:44):
and UM number six team in the land up seventeen
and nothing against Sam Houston State. They have yet to
get on the field for the second half because of
a lightning delay that's been more than an hour almost
two hours now at Kyle Field. Also whether delay number
twenty five b y U and South Florida, so things
haven't started there. Sam Iowa Sam's Iowa Hawk Eyes got

(26:04):
two safeties to beat South Dakota State seven to three.
East Carolina has come back bid falling short. Owen Daffer
missed the last second field goal as number thirty North
Carolina State wins twenty one to twenty over the Pirates.
DJ's number eight Michigan Wolverines trouns Colorado State fifty one
is seven big showing for that Wolverines defense seven sex

(26:24):
and an interception. I want to send this back to
you guys, in Steve and VJ. But we might just
be in week one of college football, but I think
we already have the best game of the college football season.
It happened in boone, North Carolina, app State and North
Carolina sixty three to sixty one. This one went final,
the first time that's been a final score in an
FBS game in the history of the FBS. And you had,

(26:48):
with thirty one seconds to go, two point conversion missed
by app State after a touchdown. You think the game
is over, right on sidekick returned back for a score
for the Heels, giving app State another their chance ba
siccore another touchdown with eight seconds to go, down by two,
but once again fail on a two point conversion. So
a lot of excitement, high octane offense. They're speaking to

(27:11):
two guys, always high energy, high team. It's v J.
Husky Steve Hartman. Well, first of all, Brian, this is
why college football rules in my world. And it's not
that I have anything negative to say about the NFL.
I love the NFL as much as anyone else, but
college football I'll take it any day of the week.
I mean, you just you get things that you're just
not gonna see anywhere else, you know. VJ. We talked

(27:32):
about the the changing landscape of college football. Another big
part of this is the transfer portal, and we're seeing
this in full effect right now. I saw an interview
with Link Kiffin, Olmoss coach, during the off season, and
he had all these transfers coming in and he was asked, hey,
are you excited about all these transfers? He goes, I
have no idea. I don't know if they they fit.

(27:54):
You know, I got seventeen transfer players coming in US.
He has more than twenty this year. And they're all,
I mean from different programs. I mean it's interesting, Like
you look at USC, so Caleb Williams leaves Oklahoma to
join Lincoln Riley at USC, and then Jackson Dart leaves
USC to go to a formar USC guy Link Kivin
down there at Old Miss to replace Matt Corral. But

(28:17):
this is going to be a real test, I think
in separating coaches. You know, the the old school coaches,
especially when you're at the top, there wasn't a whole
lot you had to do. You might pretty much drop
your hat in the ring. You're gonna get five star
recruits or whatever. You're pretty much your pick of the litter.
But with this transfer portal now it makes it tricky
on both ends because you recruit a five star player,

(28:39):
but you have another five star player and suddenly one
of them sitting and he's not happy, so he's immediately
looking for a chance to play somewhere immediately the next year.
So you don't even have the guarantee of the players
you you brought in to stay in the program. So
you've got to try your best to keep everybody happy.
And then the question is when you go from one

(29:00):
program to another. And you know this as well as
I do j so much in football is being in
the right situation at the right time. You know. I've
said there's a million times about why the New England
Patriots are so affective because what they do is identify
what it is you do best and then they put
you in a situation to succeed, which sounds like a

(29:20):
pretty basic idea. But every team doesn't do that. So
that's the big question. I mean, is Kyla william is
going to do the job at USC. I don't know,
you look greate at Oklahoma Jackson Dart Show. Promisey USC,
he said, old miss is he gonna get the job done.
But it's really gonna be uh taxing on these coaches
because you don't have a luxury of developing guys to

(29:42):
three four years in your program, bringing them along in
a system. You need to make him fit immediately and
exactly why Jim Harball named a starter for today and
named a starter for next week. The quarterback at the
quarterback position. He is the true Matt Hatter people. It's
not Mike leach A, okay, it's you got two starting quarterbacks,

(30:02):
you got no starting quarter Yeah. I know that's a
really cool saying from like thirty years ago by Bill parselves.
But in today's world, like you just said, things are different.
But let me tell you, Steve, what this really should do.
I don't I don't know if it's taxing what it's
gonna do. It's gonna make you treat these kids like
human beings. It's gonna make you have to say, Okay, no,
maybe I can't just be a butth hole to these
guys all the time yelling and screaming, are treating you

(30:25):
like a piece of property. No, you have to adjust
how you treat these kids and the best people of
coaches like people because everybody could be a football coach, right.
That means you're a good person, That means you have
a really good personality, just means you can coach the
game of football. We're gonna find out who these kids
really like. We're gonna find out who these kids say.
You know what, He's a really good guy. He's a

(30:46):
good man, he's a father figure. That's why I stayed here. Yeah,
I could have left and went somewhere else. So I
think it's gonna bring that. We're gonna see really fast
over the next year's really quick. I think that's why
you heard certain coaches complaining about I and I. You
hear a certain which is complaining about the transport portal.
Everybody's not complaining about it. It's the people that's like
they want to control the kids and keep them there.

(31:06):
I think this will help change that. I think that's
good for college football well. And this is also a
reason Lincoln Riley got literally given the house I see,
because he'd already proven it with transfer quarterbacks Baker Mayfield
when he was still a coordinator, than obviously with Kyler
Murray and Jalen Hurts. He brought these guys in the program,
and in one year they're either winning the Heisman are
knocketing on the door of a Heisman trophy. And what's

(31:27):
interesting is none of those quarterbacks had the same skill set.
They were very different quarterbacks. So he was able to
adjust the offense to Again getting back to what I
said about the Patriots, what is it you do best?
And get this, We're gonna actually put you in a
situation where you have a better chance to succeed. It
sounds so basic, and that's so few do it. So

(31:48):
that is why Lincoln Riley is what is like a
fifteen million dollar house. Yeah, and and and more to
come for him. Yeah, of course they got They got
a lot of war to do from last year. Man,
that was ugly four and eight. Even my Bruins put
sixty on here you go, here you go, even my Bruins, Yeah,

(32:09):
they put it up there. So no, I just this
is this is the other time in the n I
L we talked about, you know, keeping everybody happy, putting
money in their pockets. But how these coaches navigate, Because
it's here's the thing. If you've been one of those
long time coaches, like a Nick Saban or any one
of these guys, You're like, now, I gotta do recruiting
in terms of this frans report. Yeah, yeah, because it

(32:32):
could literally make up a third of your team that
you're losing or gain every single year. Well, if you
look at Colorado State today, they fifty nine new players
on that fifty Listen to that full fifty nine new
players that the new coach brought in with him. Like

(32:54):
this is just the landscape of college football. Yeah, you
have to get off your and go actually recruit to
through transporport. And I don't want to hear from Alabama
fans to say it. They gotta running back out of
Georgia Tech this year that transferred right on over and
a receiver from Ohio State. Like they have weapons that
will keep coming in. People will adjust to it. I
love it. I call it free agency. It's not transform portal.

(33:15):
It's free agency. Man. I want to go play here.
These guys are like NBA guys. I only want to
go play here here here, So either let me go
and let me go here, or I'm gonna be discruntal
and be unhappy here. So but I like it, And
like they like an old say, man, if you do
not evolve in life, you shall perish. So these coaches
and these programs, you better start evolving with the times,
and your program is gonna suffer from it. All right,

(33:35):
So what is makes college football so special? Tradition? Tradition, tradition,
a hundred fifty years plus of college football, and at
the end of it, somebody is crowned a national champions
still a mythical national champion. In my book, this four
team playoffs still doesn't count eventually twelve No, no, no, no no, okay, no,
that's interesting. I like that that it's it's all mythic.

(33:57):
No n c A championships ever been handed to an
you know, Division one football prom But also there's this
hunk of iron, this trophy at the end of the year.
It's called the Heisman Trophy. B J. This is I
have had a chance to vote for the Heisman. I'll
tell you how awesome. I've never mentioned this to anybody

(34:19):
that I have a vote. Did you know, Sam? Now,
I did not know this. And also I never knew
that you you thought of all these national champions as mythical.
So well, they were mythical national champions because they're all
either an A, p U p I going old school
or BCS or what another team would have beat Bama.
There's never been a Division one national champion in football once.

(34:42):
I mean, they've been obviously dominant teams that are clearly
the best in the country. But the n c a
A on both the men's and women's side, at every
single sport, at every single level, some school gets handed
an n c A championship trophy except one sport, Division one,
full ball, and no one has ever wanted because there's
never been an n c A champion Indivision one football.

(35:05):
That is an interesting you know what. Honestly, man, that's
an interesting take. I like that. Yeah, I mean that's
super interesting. Yeah. So, but at least with a twelve
school can't say national champion. Well, anybody can say they
are multiple national champions. Many years there are multiple national
champions teams claiming national championships. That's why Central FLOORA they're like, wait,

(35:27):
we're the only undefeated team and we beat the two
teams to beat the other team on the way, Like
that did Marshall do it? In Also, if I'm not
mistaken with Randy Moilson, those guys they go and defeated.
But Florida State Pay Virginia if you haven't been it again,
there has never been an n c A A champion
individual on football, never, despite the fact that at every

(35:48):
other level, every other sport, men's and women's, there's an
n c A team champion. Um all right. On the
other side, I want to get to the heigh so
I'm gonna get VJ stots here. You'll preview what which
way I should be looking as I get ready for
this vote, because starting next Saturday, I'll be doing my
top three heisman. I do it every week. I want
to make sure everyone gets one game in the books

(36:10):
before I start ranking them out there. But which which
way is VJ swinging on this? We'll find out coming
up next. They had a heck of a collision today,
but I will holds on as they take the snap
and run the clock out. In the final score, Iowa
seven in South Dakota State three. That is Gary Dahl

(36:33):
from from Liar Fields seven and three are like, oh,
touchdown a field goal? Not so fast. Ilwa got there
seven points on a field goal and not one, but
two safeties to survive against South Dakota State. South Dakota State,
you could they are number three Steve and the FCS.

(36:54):
You couldn't put up a touchdown on South Dakota State.
This is the This is the Brian Farrens offense. I
don't know if you've seen this. It's uh, it's it's
the thing. It's like a second, how does Brian Ferens
keep his job? Well, his father's the head coach. Second,
you mean they're related with the same last name. It's
it's it's like smith. It's very common. I got news

(37:15):
for him. If they continue to struggle their offense and
it results in actual losses, uh, Ferens may be forced
to make some changes if he wants to stay on
his the Iowa head coach. All right, well, VJ, here
we are once again VJA Husky. Here's Steve Hartman with you.
This is Fox Sports Saturday. We're covering a huge day
in college football. Georgia looks every bit as good as

(37:38):
they did at the n of last season. They're up
big on Oregon early on UH today, right now, twenty
one to three, Georgia leading eleventh rank. Oregon looking to
get more right now, But VJ UH, I have been
fortunate enough to have a Heisman Trophy vote since the
year the year that Cam Newton won the Heisman Trophy.
By the way, you would be amazed by this. So

(38:00):
the vote now, everything's online and we all wait till
the last day until all the conference you know, championship
games are played. And I am not exaggerating. So to
get into my ballot, I dare say the nuclear codes
are less complicated. Like when you see a series of numbers, letters,

(38:20):
and symbols, and half of the symbols either, like is
that even on my keyboard. That's what you have to
do to get into your ballot to place your first, second,
and third place vote. By the way, if you don't
fill out all three slots or any of them are
not actual college football players, your throw vote is thrown out.

(38:43):
I've been at the Downtown Athletic Club a couple of times.
They know me very well because I am Mr Heisman. So, uh,
let me get your thoughts right now. Because one of
the guys, obviously a lot of people are looking at
is Will Anderson Jr. This guy last year, he let's
face it, he had the numbers and Aidan Hutchinson. Although
I did have Hutchinson number two of my final ballots.

(39:05):
Actually my final three was exactly as it played at
pick A third at Hutchinson two, and I had Bryce
Young one. I wasn't sure about Bryce Young one when
you light up Georgia uh and that historic defense like
he did in the SEC Championship game, that one on
the heistman. But it also probably costs Will Anderson votes
because Rice Young, obviously after that performance, was going to

(39:26):
get a lot of play. So you're from Michigan or
you're Michigan fan, and Charles Woodson won the Heisman, I
couldn't have been so I was so happy that day.
Look on Peyton man look on Peyton Manning's face was
enough for the price of admission. But you know, Charles
Olsen was playing some offense that year we're talking. Look,

(39:48):
I voted from an Tito In over Johnny Manzel. I
had him first on my ballot. The only other time
I had a guy first of my ballot who didn't win.
I had Christian McCaffrey over Derrick Henry and that was
a close it as well. But can you see a
guy like well Anderson winning the Heisman Trophy or is
this reserve for a quarterback or maybe an outside possibly

(40:09):
a running back or DeVante Smith. We had a wide
receiver a couple of years ago, exactly first one since
Desmond Howard, I remember. But no, this is this is
c J. Strouds are this is Bryce Young's to lose.
And with Alabama, you're just gonna split the votes because
Bryce Young is gonna have a phenomenal year and I
hate to say, I think c J. Strous is gonna
have a phenomenal in a year. Also, So I don't
see Will Anderson went in the Heisman. Sorry, well, it's

(40:31):
a fun chase. So we're gonna be all of it
all season long. We all say some NFL news to
get to coming up next, Harman and hot Sky Here,
what's the end? It is Fox Sports Saturday. It is
an all college football weekend as the NFL will kick
off on Thursday with the Rams Super Bowl champion Rams

(40:54):
taken on a team that many have favored to win
the Super Bowl for this upcoming season. That would be
the Buffalo Bills. Uh. Georgia by the way, looking real good,
twenty eight to three blowouts so far over Oregon. So
the defending national champs, mythical flectional champs. They're flexing right now,

(41:16):
or they can be mythical or whatever people want to
call them. But you and I were just talking off
the air. I feel like if you and when you're
defending national champion, are your a team that is trying
to fight, are being considered a contender for national championship?
And week one you must come out and lay the
woodshed to your opponent. You don't let off. They should
put a fifty spot up on Oregon if they can

(41:37):
and let the world know, Hey, we lost a lot
of talent on defense, but guess what we reload here.
We don't have to kind of rebuild our program. We
got a lot of young guys that want to step
up and play, So Oregon it looks totally outmatch up.
What about this number eleven ranking, But you're talking about
it earlier. Preseason polls man probably the most worthless thing
in college football? Would you like them to get rid
of it? And well, you know, it's interesting because the

(42:00):
piece started this way back. The first a p pole
was in nineteen thirty six, but in nineteen fifty for
the first time they put out a preseason poll. Prior
to that, they did what the college football playoff poll is.
And you wait several weeks into the season and then
you start ranking the teams. The problem again with the
preseason polls is not exposing them early in the season

(42:22):
that this team is overranked, but if you're under ranked.
I mean, look at Michigan last year, right started the
season on ranked, so you know, it took a few
wins for them to start moving up the rankings and
they did that. So that that to me is the
biggest injustice about the preseason rankings. Not the fact that
certain teams are overranked, is that some teams are under

(42:45):
ranked and it takes longer for than to climb up
in the polls. And as long as the polls do matter,
even with this expanded college football playoff that we're talking about,
they're talking about the six highest ranked conference champions get
the automatic bids and everybody in a large bid. So
the human element as far as ranking teams still plays

(43:07):
apart always well, it does, but I think they should
wait till week I'm always like, wait till week eight.
Are wait till Halloween around Halloween, around late October, then
put out the first polls of any kind. Stop this
AP Coaches poll preseason stuff. Stop. We know Obama's good,
we know Ohio State's good. We know George is good.
We know that already. We don't have to put a one, two,

(43:27):
and three next to their name because to me, why
is Georgia number three? They're to defend the national champions
Why aren't they number one? Why aren't they number two?
How is Ohio State number two? They didn't even play
for their conference championship last year? So that's where I
think it gets mixed up. And by October we have
a clear view who can play, who can't, who's having
a good season, who's not. Sinter Senior should mention that

(43:48):
because I'm looking at the AP preseason poll Ohio State
number two, Michigan number eight exactly, and where to defend it?
Where VJs? I mean from now he's being happy with
that big ten champions defending and returning almost everyone on
offense and key players on defense? So how are they

(44:09):
number eight? But that's fine, But this is why I
pay no attention. In Oregon. As an example, the number
eleven team steps on the field against the national champ
definit national chimpy that lost a lot of power of defense.
They have up three points and they're getting scraped up
and down the field. Above right now, all right, a
lot of more college football we're gonna get to in
a moment here, but I do want to touch on
the NFL since I have you here on a Saturday

(44:31):
VJ Alright, So as we go into the two season again,
you know all the preseason predictions, Here's what we know.
Every single year in the NFL. There are gonna be
two or three teams that you thought a year ago
or teams on the come that fall apart the following season,
and then there's two or three teams that nobody saw

(44:52):
coming that jumps out of nowhere and suddenly they find
themselves in the postseason. So when we look at this
preseason to look at of Vegas over unders and all
the teams out there, they got Buffalo up there, and
you got Tampa based really on their division, that they're
gonna have a lot of wins. Um It's interesting the Rams,

(45:12):
despite the fact that they brought all the principles back
from a team that won the Super Bowl, they seem
to be flying under the radar. A lots being made
of your guys. Stafford's elbow and whether or not he's
a hund percent healthy. But do you have an early
feel as we get ready for the start of the
NFL season, about teams that might be flying a little
under the radar and those that might be flying a

(45:32):
little too high. I got two under the radar that
are really liking us, the Minnesota Vikings in the New
Orleans Saints, the New Orleans Saints last new coaches. By
the way, that's fine the new code, but guys that
have done this and guys that are gonna go get
and have guys that can go get it done. Famous
Jamis Winston a k my homeboy crab legs. Okay, he
was fourteen and three touchdown in interception and when he

(45:52):
blew out his knee. Last year, they beat and blew
out Green Bay to start the year and started off
really well. You lose your quarterback, things happen. You get
Michael Thomas back, we'll see what that is. I like Crysalalave.
I think he's gonna be a great NFL receiver. Avic
Kamar is one of the best utilities backs, if not
the best, all of our utility back in the league.
I just like it to set up for them that

(46:13):
he might be facing sion. But but nothing's come yet.
Though the season kicks off next week, so nothing's come
so I will wait to hear from that. But what's
going on in Tampa. It's gonna be a problem that
that the center and the guard positions, it's gonna be
a problem this year. Brady is great, We know that, guys,
But just some other thing. You bring in an old
Julio And I love Julio when he was young too,
but sometimes a you can't outrun father time. Father Tom

(46:36):
catches everybody Minnesota. I don't hate Kirk Cousins as much
as everybody else does. I look at thirty one touchdown,
seven interceptions last year. I look at passing yards, Jefferson, feeling,
Davin Cook, a young, good defense. You play the Bears twice,
and you played and you play the lines twice. All right.
Let me slow you down on the Kirk Cousins sing.
So a couple of years ago here at Fox Sports Radio,

(46:58):
we make all of our predictions, it down on paper,
who's going to win the Super Bowl, Conference conference champ,
the whole thing, and we have to make a prediction
on league MVP. Two years ago I predicted that Kirk
Cousins was going to be the NFL m v P.
Now here's the thing about Kirk Cousins and Kevin O'Connor's
taking over his head coach. They needed to change. Obviously,

(47:20):
the Mike Zimmer whatever it was that worked slightly for
a while, completely evaporated. And I have known Kevin O'Connell,
known of him since his high school days, watched him
play high school football down in the San Diego area,
so I followed his whole coaching career. But here's the
thing about Kirk Cousins, because when you look at the numbers,

(47:41):
you're like, why aren't these numbers translating into more wins? Because,
like you say, you look at the touchdown past, the
interception ratio, you look at the completion percentage, everything looks good.
But he's a five quarterback. Why can't he win more games?
And then you have to start breaking it all down.
It was like the old Tony Romo situation where when

(48:03):
he needed to be clutch, he wasn't. And that's Kirk
Cousins when he needs to be clutch, That's that's that's
what I gotta look at. I mean, it's so funny.
We talked about wins and losses with with the quarterbacks,
and here you have the forty Niners resigning Jimmy Garoppolo.
What is that about? You traded all this draft capital

(48:26):
to move up to get tray Lands and you're so
shaky on trade lands. And remember this about Kyle Shannon.
So he's been there five years, including the playoffs. His
record is forty three and forty four. With Jimmy Garoppolo,
he is thirties six and seventeen I'm be leave or sixteen,

(48:49):
and without him, he's eight and And you're like, I
mean that is so dynamically different, Like what is going
on there? We could be that good with Jimmy because
no one's gonna pretend that Jimmy Garoppolo low it's some
Hall of Fame quarterback. But whatever it is about him,
when he's on the field, they win, and when he's
not on the field, they lose. Now they've created an
ampossible situation for Trey Lance because when you have Jimmy

(49:11):
Garoppolo on the sidelines and Trey Lance is struggling, what
do you think it's gonna happen? People are gonna be
screaming get Garoppolo in there. I think they've made a
big mistake with keeping Jimmy Garoppolo. But that's what I'm
looking at, because when you talk about a Kirk Cousins.
By the way, I'm with you on Jamis Winston. I've
always been a Jamis Winston fan. To me, it was
a clear clut Heison winn. Remember there's some controversy going

(49:32):
into Heisman vote. I completely ignored he was the best
player in the country, and I've always loved his ability
to throw the ball. Even with that thirty interceptioneer, he
was second league in touchdown passes. He led the league
in passing yards. Bruce arians basically that you're told and
just throw the ball. Just throw the ball. Let's see
what happens. He did just that. In a more structured offense.

(49:53):
I think he's gonna be dynamic. I don't know how
quickly they get there. You still talk about Camerica could
be looking at a suspension, and do I really trust
to Michael Thomas is gonna stay healthy? They hope, we hope,
we'll see though, Yeah, well we'll see. But with Kurt
Cousin back, if I could just rotate back to Kurt,
I get what you're saying as far as it's not
translating to Wins, but Kurt has rarely been on a

(50:14):
good enough team for it to translate. I don't like use,
I don't like making excuses for guys. But football is
a game where you need all twenty two starters offensive defense,
and all you're living gods on special You need all
fifty three guys, okay, and on a Sunday or Thursday
night or Monday nights to win a football game. And
if if you don't have all those pieces, then we
can nitpick and point at the quarterback. The quarterbacks gets

(50:36):
the praise, I get it, So he's gonna get to blame,
and I don't disagree with that. But when you look
at the team that they're putting on the field this year,
in the division that they're putting it on, and everybody's
saying they don't think the NFC is strong this year,
So why not? Can they go eleven and six and
still a playoff or go twelve and five? And we
don't know what's gonna happen in Green Bay. All we
do know is they have Aaron Rodgers and they have

(50:56):
a really good defense. Their quarter is gonna be out
for a little while. But as Alexander, but I honestly
do believe they have a real shot there. But you know,
when you go back to Michael Thomas, we don't know.
But why why look at the negative? I just much
rather say, hello, last time we saw the god on
the field at some catches are I mean, broke the

(51:18):
record the last time we saw him. We'll see what
it's gonna be. But I really really liked that team,
and I think Tampa's got more problems than they wanted
and that people want to admit some team. I I
agree with you on Tampa, And I don't know quite
the mindset of Brady right now. I still don't. I mean,
he's trying to make it no big deal with The
theory was is that when he retired the first time,

(51:41):
his wife immediately made plans for a trip for the
family in August and unretired and she said, if you
want me and the kids to still remain in this house,
you're gonna be on that trip. Yeah, you're going. It's
the way he came out of that trip. He pretty
much was saying that there things happen in life, the
type of thing. Basically, he was given an ultimatum, all right,
coming up on the other side, we're gonna get to

(52:03):
the game of the day in college football later today
Ohio State and Notre Dame. What are we gonna see
in that matchup? We're gonna tell you coming up next,
Steve Harman VJ. Husky. Here this is Fox Sports Saturday.
Now when it comes to Iowa Sam and his musical selections. VJ.

(52:26):
You know, I'm I'm an old school guy. You're you're
more of a well you are of a current force. Well, no,
I go back to the sixties and seventies because I
had older relatives that put me onto music. But whenever
I work with this good gentleman on the board, he
always blazed good tracks. Man, this is this is hi.
This is college football, man. This is what the kids
that listen to when they get hyped. It coming out

(52:47):
of the tunnel and stuff. You gotta come. You gotta
get with it, Steve, hold on it. Like if I'm
thinking about college football music, it would be like Dona
that I have hated Notre Dame my entire life. My
dad went to USC, I was raised a Trojan, I
became a bruin my stop. You have to admit, though

(53:12):
it's a catchy too, that's the worst one ever. Man.
Have a lepard. Come on, when you saw Rudy, I mean,
come on, it didn't bring out Rudy. Listen, listen. I've
said this so many times. I love football movies. Rudy
is the most overrated football movie. Yes, I know it's

(53:32):
not really it's not a real story. We know they
embellished it a lot. Come on. Remember Joe Montana was
a teammate, said, I didn't even know this guy existed.
Gets a sack in the game. Come on. But he
was a great recruiting tool for Lou Holtz, and he
took advantage of he showed Rudy all the time. That's fine, yeah, um,
but we have Notre Dame taken on Ohio State. Uh.

(53:54):
These are legendary programs, I mean so legendary. How about this.
I'll give you a little history here. Nineteen thirty five
is what many termed the first game of the century,
and it was between Notre Dame and Ohio State. And
Ohio State was leading this game thirteen to twelve late

(54:17):
when Notre Dame brought in a player by the name
of I'm not making this up, Bill Shakespeare. His name
was actually William Shakespeare, and he threw the game winning
touchdown pass for Notre Dame to beat Ohio State, and
it was termed the first game of the century. So

(54:38):
there's a little history between these two legendary football programs.
Who do you hate more as a Michigan fan, Ohio
State or Notre Dame, Ohio to school down to school
down south. Absolutely, so you're rooting for Notre Dame. No.
I actually was gonna say I wish ties were still
a thing in college football, because that's how we like
to see that game in tonight. I'm gonna watch it

(54:58):
because I'm just a football psych hotting man. But I
I hope it's like three to two, like six to three.
I really do. I I can't listen. I'm a Michigan guy, man.
I'm just telling y'all what it is, and and the
Michigan people feel it just like they feel it about us.
I you know, like I said, I wish they could
be a tie. I do think Ohio State is gonna
lay it to them. They're super talents that they have

(55:20):
weapons all over the field. My only thing about Ohio
State is do they have an elite defense that can
get you over the top of the conference and to
a national championship. Their offense is set. Though it's interesting
now with Marcus Freeman as the coach and Notre Dame.
His first coaching job was actually as a grad assistant
at Ohio State, moved up in the ranks. He was
at Produced for several years and then went to Cincinnati.

(55:42):
Of course, last year in one year as defensive coordinator
and Notre Dame, he became so popular with the players.
When Brian Kelly left in the announced that Marcus Freeman
is gonna be the new coach. The players one nuts,
you've only been there one year. Then they lost their
bowl game. That was an ugly like a second half
collapse in that bowl game in the Fiesta Bowl. But

(56:04):
this this potentially could get ugly because you know Ohio
State with c J. Stroud and all the talent that
they have offensively, you know, he's gonna want to make
a statement. You know, Ohio State. Ryan Day is gonna
throw out everything he can. He They got the mindset
later on today that we don't want to just beat
Notre Dame. We want to embarrass Notre Dame. We wanted

(56:25):
where you know, when they're filling out their ballots next
week for who's number one in the country. They're gonna
have a thought between Alabama and Ohio States. So yeah,
Ohio State's gonna come with the Michigan. But I will
say this about Notre Dame and I've been lucky enough
to be on that campus a couple of times. And
I say lucky because when you think of college football,

(56:45):
you think about the evolution of college football. No school
did more for the evolution of the college game the
Notre Dame, going back to the New Rockney days in
the nineteen twenties, it really catapulted college football to the
level that we now see today. And I think when
Notre Dame is relevant, and again I'm never rooting for them,

(57:09):
but when they're relevant, it's good for the entire sport,
just like it is with the Yankees and baseball. You know,
when you have traditional powers that are relevant, I think
it raises the whole level of interest in the sport. Yeah, well,
you can go back to the four horsemen, Like you said,
New Rockney, They've then come on. They've had Rocket Ishmael,
Tim Brown, Joe Dysman, Joe Martana. You can name the
stars and the legend guys that they have their You're right,

(57:32):
they did help in that era where college football. Kelly
did a pretty good job. You know, he did a
great job. He didn't do a pretty good job, he
did a great He got the most he coult out
of that program. Not only that. Listen, over the last
eight or nine years, there's only been three or four
teams that have won the national championship in Alabama's gonna
take half of those. Okay, So it's hard, ladies and gentlemen,
to win a national championship. But to keep your program

(57:54):
relevant even past just the name relevant that when you
put on the game and you put the product on
the field, is that, hey, it's prettydamn good football team
right here from top to bottom. And Ryan and he
and he did do that, and then he passed uh
Lou Holtz becoming the all time winning his coach as
far as wins go at Norder Dame. But I agree
with you because there was a point in the fifties
and sixties, and like you said, even in the thirties
and forties, college football was vastly more popular than the

(58:17):
pro game was. The pro guys had mechanic jobs in
the off season. Okay, they were changing oil in the
off season, they're walking home after after they would play
on the Sunday and play a game. So nor did
Dame did do that. But god, I still hate themselves.
I still disliked himself. And then Ryan Day, you know,
obviously inheriting the program for Urban Meyer has not missed

(58:38):
a beat. I mean they continue to just you know,
rack up wins all over the place. Oh, it's interesting
the fate of some of their quarterbacks. Obviously, the tragedy
with Dwayne Haskins recently but never really materialized in the NFL.
Justin Fields, I guess early on we still say the
jury's out on him. And I was a big Justin
Fields fan coming out of Ohio State. Maybe it doesn't
help that he's in a Bears uniform, a team that

(58:59):
had and had a Pro Bowl quarterback. Sins. Yeah, Jim
McMahon as the last time the Bears had a Pro Bowl.
That's the last time a Bears quarterback was named to
a Pro Bowl Jim McMahon back the year they won
the Super Bowl. But um C J. Stroud so cow kid. Uh,
obviously he's putting up some numbers. But Ryan Day falls
in that category. Again, if one of those coaches is

(59:20):
really starting to complain about the whole cost of maintaining
a certain level. I mean he threw it out there
like you know, how much money we're gonna have to
dish out? And I'm like, okay, well if you won't,
somebody else will. That's the whole Jimbo Fisher story down
in A and M. And he had you know, Nick
Saving getting a little bit like well, hey, I'll spent me.

(59:41):
And it's like, okay, well that's the game. Now. That's
where we are. Now. By the way, how much money
to Ohio State? How much money do they have to
maintain to keep c. J. Stratt happy this year? Uh?
I know he wasn't eligible for the NFL Draft, obviously
he would be long one. Same thing with Bryce Young
guy at Alabama. But if Bryce Young, for instance, remember

(01:00:02):
Nick sabans City was making seven figures before he even started.
He had a mill in his bank account. How much
is he making now that he's the Heisman man? At
least three or four million dollars he's he's Bryce Young
is probably sitting on about five million dollars right now
and his bank account right now off of winning the Heisman,
winning the SEC championship being as good as he is,
and there's the money flows in college football alumni so called.

(01:00:25):
Back in our day, right friends of the program as well,
they used to call it the handshakes, the brown paper bag.
But now it's just it's wide open man legalized cheating.
It's basically I think that was what Lane Kiffins eggs, well,
I mean it is what it is now. I went
in this crackit as that I would just say, we
started doing what we should have been doing and paid
these kids a little something. Everybody doesn't make it to

(01:00:47):
the NFL, but everybody goes out on the college football
team and puts their body in their blood, sweat and
tears on the line, and all those kids are not
gonna make it. At least start giving him some bread.
I gotta, I gotta hot take. I said this past week.
I would even start letting eighteen year old seniors in
high school if the parents agree, and the parents and
you go through the parents, why not start giving n

(01:01:07):
I L to somebodyse high All these high school kids
are gonna get a chance to go off and play
big time college football or get to the NFL. But
if you're making money for your high school and your
program where they can build a four million dollars stadium
and all these new facilities and you get nothing out
of it. I don't like that. I think they should
start paying some of these high school kids. I know,
I get I'll get pushed back on that, but that's

(01:01:28):
just where I am with him. Well, they have been, though,
because recruiting has been going on in high school courseball
all over the country, and it's prevalent here in southern California.
Guys in prep schools. You mentioned Oakes Christian. I'm not saying.
I'm not accusing. My kids went to Westlake High School,
so the rival high school down the road anyway. But no,
I mean I agree with But the one that you
can't do is give them salaries because of Title nine,

(01:01:51):
because of the n c A rules. I mean, it's
very simple. If you pay a salary of any swords
to a football player, then you have to give him
on the women's rowing team the exact same amount of
money is right there in Title nine. It's everything has
got to be equal. So the n I L obviously
creates a loophole where they can get the money funneled

(01:02:12):
into the football players basketball players, the revenue generating sports
athletes where you don't end up having to pay everybody else.
I think it will start to seep to some of
these other sports, especially like women's basketball. You're telling me
you don't think you don't think a Yukon young ladies
could get exactly, So look where if I'm an invest money,
look at you could have high profile athletes and Olympic

(01:02:34):
sports whose sports don't generate revenue for the universities, but
they have a high profile. Some of them are coming
out of the Olympic Games and suddenly they're back in
college or something like that. No, that that's gonna be
equal ground for everybody. But the idea of like people said, well,
why don't you just sort of pay him a salary?
He can't do it because Title nine says, fine, if
you want to pay them a salary, guess what that uh,

(01:02:58):
you know, women on the rowing team is gonna have
to make the exact same number. But not only that,
it's not It just wouldn't balance out because Okay, so
if you were paying a salary, do you think Bryce
gets a million before he starts? No, exactly, So n
I l is better anyway, if I were just if
I were the players, I would definitely fight. But no, no, no,
no no, we don't want a salary. Let me go
sign Let me be DJ, Let me sign with Dr Pepper,

(01:03:20):
you know, let me do Dr Pepper commercials. I don't
want your salary. Just let me make my money over here.
I'm still gonna show up the class, and I'm still
gonna show up the practice and bust my ass and
play hard on the field, and we'll just go from there.
You added a civil syllable to his name. Louie younglay
O younglay. I think you said lay at the end
you have. But the only reason I know that is

(01:03:46):
when he was in high school and I'm, you know,
doing TV here, and TV is always the worst with names,
and you see names and you're like and then even
when you see him on a prompter, even if you've
been practicing, when you see it, you're like that, that
doesn't make any sense. I got you lay down. I
was I was like young and Bryce Young, all right?

(01:04:06):
Bryce Young is easy? Is at the practice that one
I called it the very first game I called the
play they played j C c R And I just
called him DJ. Yes, I didn't I did, I did
color Is he gonna bounce back at Clemson after that
disastrous season last year? The hell happen to this? Okay, okay,
well hold on, hold on, hold on. I want to

(01:04:28):
get to that problem. One of the big stories in
college football is, well Clemston bounce back after an uncharacteristic
down year a year ago. But first let's find out
what's trending as Brian Finley is back. Now. You never
mess up with names all the time. I get called
out regularly, but you know, we're human. And but I

(01:04:50):
gotta say I'm pretty good at pronouncing tennis players names,
knowing that you know I work on that side of things,
which can be challenging TV. I have TV this weekend.
I'm literally going straight from here to KT L A
and L A and I'm dreading the US Open right now,
especially on the women's side, because all the big names
have been eliminated. The nice thing about that is on

(01:05:12):
the w t A website, they the players on their
profiles will say their name twice. So if you are
ever in doubt, Steve, when that moment comes, just go
to their individual profiles on w t A and you
know you can throw me five dollars a bit of
a one today then Ruth, Yes, look at you, look
at you. Yeah, I was practicing for that one. I

(01:05:34):
know those teams, some of these others. I have no idea. Well,
some people might have no idea why Nebraska is tied
with an FCS team right now against North Dakota seven
to seven at the half. This after Scott Frost, the
corn Huskers said coach got so much flak for losing
in Ireland last week against Northwestern. So more struggles, except

(01:05:55):
this time it's in Lincoln, Nebraska. No surprise here as
in Atlanta. We are watching number three Georgia. Just put
it on number eleven Oregon. Bennett rolls to the right,
Macintosh over on that side. He comes back the other way,
stats and trying to avoid the rush, throws it up
in the air. Cut God provisational Latt mccacky in the

(01:06:17):
left corner. Look at that called Georgia Radio network at
his thirty five to three in favor of the Bulldogs
early stages of the third quarter and Bennett twenty one,
twenty five through the year, two hundred yards and one score,
the twenty four year old standing in and playing well
also number six Texas A and M. They got their

(01:06:38):
game back after more than two hours, having to wait
out a lightning delay. They in the Aggies are up
twenty four to nothing against Sam Houston State. A couple
of minutes into the fourth quarter. Number nine Oklahoma is
zooming past UTEP twenty eight to ten third quarter, where
the UCF transfer Dylan Gabriel responsible for two make it
three scores, two through the air, one on the ground.

(01:07:00):
Number sixteen Miami towering over Bethune Cookman at the half
forty two to tend. Henry Parrish Jr. The ball carrier
for the Hurricanes sixty seventy yards, ten carries and three scores.
K J. Jefferson playing a hand ind both touchdowns for
number nineteen Arkansas. Sam Pittman's team is sticking it to
Luke Fickle and number twenty three Cincinnati at the half

(01:07:21):
fourteen to nothing. Also we mentioned, and as you mentioned
as well, Steve San Diego State getting beat up right
now at home to Arizona thirty to ten early stages
of the third quarter. There old mrs on top, number
twenty one team in the Land against Troy three at
the half just a couple of quick finals to get

(01:07:41):
two of noteworthy status. North Carolina finds a way to
edge out sixty to sixty one APP State in boone
North Carolina, where there were multiple missed two point conversions
by app State in the final minute of the game.
It was a wild finish and number twenty five b
y U in Southern Florida still no weather delay dealing

(01:08:03):
with lightning. A win for Iowa over South Dakota State
seven and three. Number eight in Michigan powers pass Colorado
State fifty one to seven. Wolverine defense seven sacks, FCS
Delaware beats Navy fourteen to seven. North Carolina State survives
after a missfield goal from e c U twenty one
to ten or twenty one to twenty the final I

(01:08:25):
should say, and lastly, v J and Steve, we do
have our attention on U C l A. After falling
down seventeen to seven of Bowling Green. It has been
the Bruins scoring thirty one unanswered points early fourth quarter.
Dorian Thompson Robinson two eighties, six through the air, two touchdowns,
Zach scharbon A eleven one eleven yards rushing with a score,

(01:08:47):
so order is restored. Steve and VJ at the Rose
Bowl here in the Brewing season opener. Yeah, when Zach
sharbon A wins the Heistman, he says, just so that
I made the right move, leaving mission again to come
to u c l A. Yeah, when VJ is gonna
be a little upset about that, not even not even Brian,

(01:09:09):
Thanks so much. Great update. As always, uh Dabbo Sweeney,
head coach at Clemson, proclaims, bring it on, bring it
on the twelve team playoff. He knew, he said, I
knew it was coming. Um dabbos as a funny guy.
Back when I was doing our national radio shore Fox
Sports Radio with Paddle Brian uh Mandabbo. This is probably

(01:09:29):
around twenty when Clemson was sort of beginning to sort
of take ahold. I remember he uh he brought him on.
He joins us right now Clemson coach uh Dabbo Sweeney
and and Sweeney comes on. He goes, that's Sweeney. Yeah,

(01:09:51):
sometimes you mispronounced the name and get He wasn't happy
with that. Um so Dabo has been a little full
of himself ever since. But you can do that and
he win as many games as they have. But last
year they had a three lost season for the first
time in seven years VJ. They got Young lay back
for another year. Have we seen the last of Clemson where,

(01:10:13):
let's face it, they had a four year run there
where they literally had the same record as Alabama, splitting
national championships. They were even with Alabama over about a
four year period. There is that over. Can we see
Clemson regain that that's over? That's over. They don't have
they don't have a Travis et, and they don't have
some of the receivers and some of the defensive guys

(01:10:33):
that they've had their some of the coordinators have not
gone on to deal with DJs. And I said this
when I used to watch him in high school, is
that the kid is so big and so strong, and
he has such a big armed At a lot of times,
young quarterbacks like that don't do the mechanics and the
fundamentals to be a complete quarterback. And I always watched
a quarterback's feet. I'm I'm always gonna watch the quarterback's feet.

(01:10:54):
That will tell you everything you need to know. And
I remember going on Twitter after watching them get blown
out by uh Modern Day and Bryce Young where he
threw and again where he threw three picks, but every
picky threw his feet were just all over the place.
And I said, if this kid does not get his
feet together, he's gonna show in college. And the internet
came after me, Bosco fans, his family, that everybody came

(01:11:15):
after him. It's like, guys, look, I'm just analyzing the game.
If you watch him last year, his feet are all
over the place. And when your feet aren't directed and
you're not using your hip and step into your target,
your throws are gonna be off. This is quarterback football,
one on one guys. I'm not a guru. That's just
basic stuff right there. And I don't think he cleaned
it up in the off season. They got a five
star kid coming in there that people were saying, Oh,

(01:11:36):
he might take a spot, he might take a spot.
But he's the big he was the big catch the
year before. He's gonna be named the starter right now.
But to answer your question, as far as those those
days that we saw, those days, those days are done.
I don't think they made the college football playoffs this year. Alright,
So Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia one two three in the
preseason polls, Clemson four overrated Super Notre Dame five super overrated,

(01:12:00):
super and M six overrated. That that's based on their
recruiting class more than anything. I mean, I know they
beat Alabama last year, but I don't I always thought
Jimbo leaving Florida State was a mistake. I said when
he left Florida State, I'm like, why would you do that?
You resurrected that program that was dying after the late

(01:12:21):
great Bobby Bowden had had it up for twenty years,
and you won a national championship there with a fresh
re quarterback at Jameis Winston, and you left to go
to A and M. I know the money's longer in Texas,
we all know that. But I thought that was a
big mistake because they were going to the SEC and
it's like, hold up, you left the A c C
to go try to beat Nick Saban every year. Have fun,
like have fun with that. So I thought that was

(01:12:42):
a major mistake for for them. But I don't know
if I really believe in Texas A and then, because
shouldn't they have already at least got to a college
football playoff by now with Jimbo. Shouldn't have been there
at least once in your opinion by now, and they
haven't been. So why do I think you're gonna beat
Georgia and Alabama and the SEC this year and be
the third team in this year? I just don't see it. Well, again,
when you have the number one rated recruiting class, and

(01:13:04):
remember this, even if you're in Alabama, in Ohio State,
or you know, getting all these five star recruits. Here's
how five star recruits pan out. Five star recruits. I
mean a third of them will be as good as advertised,
a third will be good enough, and a third will
be completely overrated and of no use to your program.

(01:13:25):
So really that's the way it works with these five
star recruits. So then it really comes down to coaching
putting all the pieces together. Jimo Fisher obviously had a
great success in Florida State, but I agree with you,
since he came to A and M the High Boys,
he was gonna do at A and M what he
did to Florida State before things went south at Florida State. Uh,

(01:13:45):
and we haven't seen that yet. All right, Coming up
on the other side, we continue on covering all the
college football. One of the more intriguing teams in the
nation is the University of Southern California. The once fable
power of college football is coming off a four and
eight season, and yet there are preseason top fifteen. Are

(01:14:05):
they capable of that kind of a turnaround? Will break
it down? Coming up next, Steve Harband VJ Husky hanging
here on Fox Football Saturday. How's it going so far
with you? I see you brought of football? Now? Why
is it that you're holding a football? Because I believe
in the sports gods. I believe that God appoints angels

(01:14:29):
to watch over certain things in life, to make sure
that they go a certain way that they're supposed to go.
And football is one of the things that I love
so much. I'm just a kid man. I carry it around,
Can I Can I have now? I When I work
for the Raiders back in the nineteen eighties. One of
the great things about working for an NFL team, I
had access access to actual NFL footballs. So I would

(01:14:55):
borrow football. Yeah, throw it in the car and then
you go off of my buddies. And the thing about
a an NFL football is that it's it's like rock
hard like you you can grip it and I you know,
I I had pretty decent sized hands, so I could
throw the ball pretty well. And I have my buddies

(01:15:15):
and we just fire it. Like I would sit there
and he would do like a crossing pattern. I just
fired his and this. Uh. There's not a better feeling, though,
Like you get that tight spiral on it, man and boom,
and I play tight in the receiver. So to me,
the best feeling is watching it come to you, getting
your hands ready and making and making the catch. That's

(01:15:37):
the prettiest thing to me about football. But I have
it because I feel like I knew we're gonna talk
a lot of football today. I was texting back and
forth with Danny, super producer this morning, like, Hey, what's
on Tappy Goes. Listen plenty of football, plenty of college
of NFL. Right up your alley, just follow Steve Baby.
I'll tell them, no problem. I'll get in the shotgun seat.
I'll make sure to drink stay cold and the music
stays fresh. But I like to bring it with me

(01:15:58):
because I feel like I just like it. Yeah, I
can talk fits. And by the way, I like when
you're tucking the ball in right there. Yeah, that's the
first thing you do. Not fumble that footel. All right,
so we're talking a little bit about teams that might
be a little overhyped. We're talking about Clemson, Notre Dame,
Texas A and M. And I'm looking at USC, a

(01:16:19):
preseason four team for a team that was four and
eight last year and a team that was getting routed.
You remember those games of the college when like Oregon
States running up all those points, U c. L A
Is running them out of the building and the seats
were empty. It was no no USC fan was gonna
sit through that debacle. And all of a sudden, Lincoln

(01:16:41):
Riley comes in and they're predicting, like in one year,
SC is gonna be back. Now I know what happened
when Pete Carroll came to USC was one of the
most unexpected turnarounds in college football history. No one could
have predicted that Pete Carroll, a twice fired NFL coach,
were really no resume me to sit on, was gonna
show up the USC because his first year at USC

(01:17:03):
they were a five hundred team. And then all of
a sudden, the next year Carson Palmer got hot, won
the Heisman Trophy and the rest was history. Is that
gonna be the case of Lincoln Riley. Is he gonna
put usc back on the mat immediately or do they
have more trouble ahead of them before they can get
back to that level. I want to say yes, but
I'm gonna just say yes because you still have to

(01:17:27):
fix the trenches. Football is about the trenches. It starts
in the trenches. Football one on one run to football,
stop the run, protect the passer, rush the passer. Everything
else falls in behind that. So they still need to
get some boys that's eating biscuits and corn bread and grits,
cheese grits for breakfast and bowl of oatmeals. They need
to get some of them type of boys up front,
especially if they're gonna go over well when they go

(01:17:48):
over to the big tin. But I love Lincoln Riley
man and and and Caleb Williams Kazagin High School w
C a C football conference from my air where I
played in my area one from it in the d
n V area. Man, This kid is magical, man. And
they got they got Malakai Nelson from Lost Lost Alidas
High School out here, who's coming in behind him? So
the players transferred. That says a lot to me bringing

(01:18:09):
into talent. I think he will get back to SC
keeping home grown speed and home grown talent right here
in so Cal there. I look for a major turnaround
from them this year. I like eight or nine wins
out of USC this year, and then next year they
start to push towards the college playoffs. So yes, I
do think there is a big time turn around, better

(01:18:31):
than Carroll's first year when they were five hunter. USC
wins eight or nine games. This year, well, they might
even win more. I mean watching Oregon is now down
forty two to three, so Georgia. By the way, speaking
of preseason heightsman, you know Stetson Bennett was one of
those guys that again no one looked at as anything
other than a placeholder, a game manager. Today against Oregon

(01:18:53):
to open up his season, he's twenty five or thirty one,
three sixty eight yards and two touchdowns. That might put
him on top three. Heispan next week, consider he's playing
a ranked oppotent Most of these guys are not playing
ranked deponents. Now could turn out that Oregon is vastly overrated.
They're not looking good today. But uh yeah, I mean,
if if Oregon is not all that Utah is real,

(01:19:15):
I know Utah's got a team, but the rest of
the conference. Right now, if you look at USC schedule preseason,
they're only playing two teams that are ranked, and that's
Utah and Notre Dame. And we'll find out a lot
about the youths tonight in the Swamp. So we'll find
out about it, a lot about the youths tonight in
the Swamp. I think they win, but I think you know,
we're gonna find out a lot about them. But you're right,

(01:19:36):
the only team that could probably compete with them is
gonna be the youth. We don't know what Washington has.
Oregon State could be something we just never kind of
know for sure. But SC should win this conference this
year and and be and be back on the top,
all right, and the next hour among other things, Adam
Kaplan is gonna be joinings are Fox Sports Radio, NFL Insider,

(01:19:57):
also EJ. I want to get into the future of
the ACT twelve. I mean, they're excited yesterday because with
the expansion of the college football Playoff, seems like everybody's in.
Well that may be the case. We'll find out more.
But once USC and u c l A leave the
PAC twelve, is there a future for that West Coast

(01:20:17):
Conference will get to that. Keep it here on Fox
Sports Radio. Hartmann and Husky rolling on here Fox Sports Saturday.
Did I just see a very nervous Marcus Freeman showing up?
He looked? Did he look at Wow? Uh? He gets

(01:20:37):
his first opening game as the head coach and Notre Dame.
Of course, he was in that Bowl game replacing Brian Kelly,
a game they lost on that second half in the
Fiesta Bowl. Body, it's like he's walking into the Lions down.
They're taking on Ohio State. Uh, that's gonna be a
tough one for Notre Dame today. They can get ugly. Man,
You're you're being nice by Saints. Tough. This game could
get just like this Oregon Georgia game right now. Can Yeah,

(01:21:00):
it can just get ugly. The top three teams in
the nation are very, very good, great football teams Bama,
Ohio State in Georgia. Lazy and gentlemen. Just watch those
three teams most of the year. They're probably gonna finish
where they are. Yeah. You know, it's interesting about Nick
saban so name. You know Nick span in the news
the whole offseason when he made the crack about Texas

(01:21:23):
saying am buying their players and you know, but I mean,
there was a reason. Nick Saban just doesn't say things
are the sake of saying things. What he was delivering
was a message to his own support, like you're gonna
have to step it up. We need more money. We're
no longer just sitting here is the only people throwing
money around. If A and M is doing it, everyone

(01:21:44):
else is gonna be doing it. So if you want
to maintain what we got going on here at Mamma,
you're gonna have to fork over the money because I
can't do it. You can talk about being the best
coach ever, the most accomplished coach perhaps in college football history,
it ain't happening if I don't have the players. He
could have said it differently, though, he could have said

(01:22:06):
it differently. When he the way he the way he
sat there, it was it was it was just it
was too arrogant for me. It really wasn't. It was smug.
He's like, I mean, if you look at in Texas,
A and M, they bought every player. You can't say
it like that if you want your if you want
your guy to give you more money, because then he
tried to throw Dion's name in, and Dion struck back like,
hold on, now watch what you say. Don't don't make

(01:22:26):
me start telling what I know. Just watch yourself now.
I thought that's where he made a mistake. If you
want your money bag to give you more money, then
go directly at them. Do not use another person as
an example to try to reach the message. And I
thought that's where he screwed that up. See, I look
at his future at Alabama this way, because he recently
had said, hey, I'm invigorated, I'm seven years old, but

(01:22:49):
you know I means, you know, focused as ever, it's
easier to say that when you've had the run he's
had at Alabama. But if for some reason, Alabama misses
on a quarterback and suddenly, like where we were a
year ago with Clemson with Younglay, where the quarterback he thinks,
five star guy gonna be an immediate success and he's not,

(01:23:12):
and you take a slight step back. That's when I
think Nick Saban, I don't think he would rough it
out like trying to rebuild it and get it back.
I think if like they had a three loss season
or something like that, or dare say a four last season,
I would I I would think Nick might step aside.
I don't think he would be comfortable in that job

(01:23:33):
if he didn't have an absolute lock in the race
to win a national championship one year, I think he
would stick it out. But if he could see it
coming to point you make as great as far as quarterback.
If he can see that he doesn't have a quarterback
maybe for the next year or two after that one year,
that could be a difference maker. Because remember Bryce Young

(01:23:53):
originally commits the USC, he takes an overnight, late night
trip to Alabama on a surprise visit and comes back
to l A committed to Alabama. When he when he's
playing lame with the l X, he's no longer committed
to the Troja, so he he kind of saw Dnny
he had to make a move to get himself a
quarterback to be able to secure the future there. But
I think one year he would stick it out. But

(01:24:15):
if he can see the landscape of quarterbacks and he's
not gonna have one of those guys, then I can
see you. I can see him um maybe saying, yeah,
you know, I've had my time here, It's time to go.
But he won't do it quietly. You know what he'll do.
He'll blame n I l on the way out the door.
By the way, interesting opening game for Alabama. So they're
forty two point favorites at home against a pretty good

(01:24:37):
Utah State team who already actually has a game under
their belt now, not taking Utah State to Welling's game,
but you know, and Alabama obviously, he's got perhaps the
top two favorites along with Stroud for the Iceman Trophy.
By the way, I want to ask you about Bryce
Young because you followed him all back to his high
school days and he concerned about him moving on to

(01:24:59):
the NFL with his size. No, not at all. I
was when I was calling the game against them in
Bosco and the REP there was a scout there from
twenty four seven Sports, and I asked him, like, come on,
give me this kid. And I know you guys love him.
You're got right number one. He goes listening. We haven't
ranked as high as we do because of his mechanics
and the way he just throws the football. We understand
that he's small, but the NFL is different now and

(01:25:21):
he's not a scrambling running quarterback he moves to avoid
pressure and still keeps his eyes down the field. He
doesn't say he's not Lamar Jackson, he's not Colin Murry.
He's not those guys. He moves to get rid of
the ball. He doesn't move the run. So these hits
that people think he's gonna take, he won't. He will
not take. And he has the the intangibles and he
has the fundamentals at the quarterback position. I just said,

(01:25:43):
flat out is the first round draft picking this when
he was a senior. He goes, Yeah, that's why we
rank them. He goes, he's a first round draft pick.
V I said, Oh, that's all I need to hear.
And that's you know, everybody wants to point to the size,
but just watch the kid play. Put the tape on man. Well,
I mean, and if you look at his interceptions, it's
such a low number. Now look at that great Georgia
defense and that was a historic defense. Second time around,

(01:26:03):
they got Timmy through a couple of picks, but he
only had I think four picks the entire year before
you and when he won the Heisman Trophy. I'm with
you on a guy like Bryce Young, you'll be interesting, though,
because I look at the Seattle Seahawks this year and
this is one of the most in this great tank
jobs in the history. First they go out and they're
telling everybody that Drew lock is the quarterback of their future.

(01:26:23):
But now they're gonna go with Geno Smith. And they
picked up that extra draft capital in the Russell Wilson deal.
So already you're looking at a team that's gonna be
bottom five in the NFL. And let's say they're sitting
at the number five slot, and then hey, oh that's right,
we picked up some extra draft picks for Russell Wilson.
When you look at a Bryce Young, want to look

(01:26:44):
at a C. J. Stroud after an off season. As
far as quarterbacks were concerned, there was nothing to really
sneeze it. I mean, although it pick. It's an interesting guy.
I don't know what's going on there in Pittsburgh. He's
a local favorite. He might get an opportunity. You know what,
Here us a side note just and we get sidetrack
a lot. I've been a Trabinsky guy the whole way.

(01:27:05):
I don't understand why the Bears gave up on a
guy that was a second overall pick. He won a
lot more games that he lost, and he played pretty
well if you look at his numbers that are not
half bad. Coaching situation didn't work. He goes to Buffalo,
he sits on the bench with a really good team
a year ago. I don't think that did him any
adverse effect. And I looked at him like that, He's
gonna get an opportunity in Pittsburgh. But if you're Mike

(01:27:26):
Tomlin and you see what Belichick did a year ago saying, sorry, Cam,
I'm just gonna give it to the rookie, Mac Jones,
tom O may Side. You know this pick and kid
is twenty four, he's not twenty one, and he's obviously
a local favorite, and he's looked pretty good in the preseason.

(01:27:47):
Why are we wasting time on Trabinsky. Why don't we
just say this is our quarterback? I agree? And in
the same situation with Atlanta, and I know you say sidetrack,
but you have you have, you have Desmond down there? Right,
doesn't really why you already know what Marcus Mario. It is. Well,
Arthur Smith is tied though tomorrow, that's the whole. That's
that's fine, But how many games you're gonna win with
Marcus this year, four or five? How many games you're

(01:28:08):
gonna win with Ritter three or four? A one game
difference is not enough for me to go with the starter.
So back to Pittsburgh. Picket starts. Man. I'm you could
beat your whiskey guy. That's fine, but I agree with you.
Why not just say listen, Mitch, look, we're going with
the young kid. Still keep him there because you still
need a veteran as a backup. It's better having a
young guys. You want a rookie as a backup. Come on,
put the rookie in now. You drafted him for this reason.

(01:28:32):
No one's expected Pittsburgh to do much. How many games
you're gonna win with your bisky? How many six or
seven games? How many you're gonna win with Picket? Probably
five or six games. It's a one game difference. It's
not gonna matter. You start the rookie and the kids
look good. Hometown kid, he was there at the Pittsburgh
game the other night in the backyard broad West Virginia
to drop the banner and stuff in front of the

(01:28:52):
Pittsburgh start to start the kid. Now they may do it.
We're gonna find at Adam Kathleen's gonna be join us
here shortly. We'll talk to him about all the stories,
as far as the NFL's concerns to get ready for
the start of the NFL season coming up Thursday, with
the Rams hosting the Buffalo Bills. As far as the
game's going on right now, there's not much to talk about. Again,

(01:29:12):
the big story has been Georgia. They have been as good,
if not better than advertised, an absolute blowout against Oregon
forty two to three as we head to the fourth quarter.
And Stepson Bennett has been wow. In fact, he's not
even in the game anymore. They pulled him thirty one
three sixty eight yards, two touchdowns and no picks. So

(01:29:33):
don't worry about Georgia. They're gonna be in the mix.
And Kirby Smart. You know, sometimes when you come back
from you know, big coaching tree, like a guy like
Nick Saban, maybe you don't live up to the hype
of Kirby Smart. At Georgia has done just that well,
I mean national championship first time in forty years. Man
like that says something to me. And the guy could coach,
all right, the guy, the guy could coach some of

(01:29:55):
these other guys that have left Saving and they go
back to play them, they don't have the team to
beat Save. Yeah, you're your disciple, you go back to,
but you don't have the horses, man, you don't have
the Jimmy's and the Joe's and ain't always about the
X and knows it's about the Jimmy and the Joe's
a lot of saturdays, and you don't have that talent.
He has the talent in Georgia to do it again.
I think they're in a college playoff and I think

(01:30:16):
they have a great shot at repeating this year. I
think both champions in football, them and the Rams both
have a full legitimate shot to repeat this year. So
you think George has a chance to be a mythical
national champion. I like that. I don't agree with it,
but I like it, you know, I do. I like it.
I'm some great games over the years. I was at

(01:30:36):
that Texas USC game at the Rose Vault, one of
the greatest of not greatest college football games of all time,
two superpowers going to head to head, but Texas walked
away that day as a mythical national champion. Mythical all right,
coming up, we're gonna get into all the NFL news. Look,
we're enjoying a college football weekend. Well, we know the
majority of you out there saying, when are we going

(01:30:58):
to get NFL football? Of the counts. It's gonna start Thursday.
Super Bowl Champion Rams taken on the preseason Super Bowl
favorite Buffalo Bills. Adam Caplan our Fox Sports Radio NFL
Inside here, joins us coming up next, Steve Hartman VJ.
Husky Here, Fox Sports Saturday. All right, we're gonna take

(01:31:20):
a little break from all the college football ash and
get ready for the NFL season. It kicks off Thursday.
Super Bowl Champion Rams taken on, at least from Vegas standpoint,
the Super Bowl favorite for the upcoming season, that would
be the Buffalo Bills. And Jonas right now, as he
so graciously does every Saturday. Here a Fox Sports Radio

(01:31:40):
NFL Insider X. Some serious X, some NFL's Adam Kaplan
All right, Adam, we got a lot of grounded covers.
We get ready for the start of the NFL season.
But let's start with the decision made by the forty
Niners and Jimmy Garoppolo. What's the story here? Um are
they just really nervous about Trey Lance head into the season.

(01:32:01):
How is this going to play out with the forty Niners. Yeah,
it's really fascinating, Steve. So, there are a couple layers
of this story, and it's on the latter part of
what you talked about. First of all, if you look
at their backup quarterback situation, they handed it to Nate Sudfeld.
They gave him two million, fully guaranteed signing, and Stutfelt
was inconsistent in camp and then his last preseason game

(01:32:22):
he didn't play well. And then they talked internally the
last three or four weeks, what if we look at
bringing back Garoppolo. They didn't. They didn't rule it out,
they talked about it. There was no trade out there
for him. Unfortunately for them, there would have been in
March had he not had right shoulder surgery. There there
we would would have probably been between four and six
teams involved, but they all evaporated because they just didn't

(01:32:43):
have a timeline and when he'd be ready, and they
want to pay the money of over twenty four millions.
So the left of the Niners are being released, and
they knew that by releasing the player there's no you
don't get a compic for next year. So they thought, hey, listen,
six and a half million is not a bad it's
not bad money or backup. That's that's the going right
for the between six and eight million for the top

(01:33:04):
backup quarterbacks and Steve. The real truth is they know
if Lance gets hurt, they didn't have an answer, and
if he doesn't play, they didn't have an answer. It's
actually a little bit easier than you probably thought to
keep him, and there's a lot of upsides to the
deal if if he has to play. Now I know
they've they've sort of left the door open if they
wanted to trade him, but just talking to someone very
close the situation, and it doesn't sound like that's what

(01:33:25):
they want to do by the trade deadline because the
big deal here and another part of why they brought
him back is they really believe their team is really
good and they have a chance to go very far.
Let's not forget they were an interception away from being
in the super Bowl. Literally, if if Jawawski Tart doesn't
drop that ball there in the Super Bowl. So Adam
Cavinan vj Renousky here Man always great to talk to

(01:33:45):
you here on Saturday's man and ask some football questions.
I'll stick what a teen has got some quarterback? I
guess questions are media things. They have some questions and
that's my belove. At Miami Dolphins, we finally saw two
on the field for a few uh series with with Tree,
hill Um got a chance to get a all out
to him. Whether people think was underthrown, great throw, whatever
the case may be. But what are what are we
looking at? Man? It's it's next Sunday, No more talking,

(01:34:07):
no more preseason. These guys got a buckle the chine
trappings trap on to show the pads and just go
play football. What do you see happening with two in
his Miami Dolphins offense and his team this year? It
was with them last week. In fact, I've been with
the Dolphins twice this summer, two days with the Bucks.
Last week. Well, unfortunately the second day that I was
supposed to be with Dolphins, they had a stomach virus

(01:34:27):
go through. So they only practice once with Philly. But
you just get the sense that kind of know who
they are. They understand the pressure that's onto the big
problem though with their offensive line. It's still has some
pretty significant issues, particularly on the right side that that
doesn't worry me. Left side and centers is pretty set.
But that's been the problem. You know, guys followed Dolphins

(01:34:47):
for for years or they're they've missed on on first
and second round picks. They haven't got it really right.
They're paying toront Armstead, who's in the twilight of his career,
a lot of money to play left tackle. Very good
football player, but he's been hurt a lot. They there'll
be a run, fast offense. This is what the Kyle
Shanahan offense at Mike McDaniel runs. That's where it starts
with a run game. So that will help to uh.

(01:35:07):
I'll tell you this though, and yeah, you talked about
the throw against Philly was way short, but he'll adjusted
to it. I also saw this in practice. This is
not new with TWA. He has trouble driving them ball
down the field this offense. So the good thing is
it's predicated on timing. It's an old school West Coast offense.
You're not gonna see a lot of downfield throws. They're
gonna be a lot of that area and shorter where

(01:35:30):
they had to pass target to run after the catch.
If they protect to uh, he could be effective. He's
sort of like a point guard out there surveying. Could
see that up close. That's what they are. They their
defense should be pretty good. They kept Josh Boyer, the
who was the defensive coordinator, Brian Floors. They're gonna run
that that same scheme, which is the New England scheme.
So they were a chance to be a good football team.

(01:35:50):
It's just you don't want to put it all on
too and they have a rookie head coach, but there's
certainly some questions, particularly on the offensive line at quarterback.
And I'm a year ago New England. We were sitting
there and his mating Cam Newton was going to be
the starting quarterback, and Belichick flipped the switch and went
with Mac Jones and they ended up in the playoff.
What are the chances of Mike Tomlin deciding, you know what,

(01:36:10):
we like Trabinsky, but Pickett is our guy for the future.
We're gonna hand the ball to him day one. It
would surprise me because though to start training camp, pick
it was three and then he over the final two
weeks of camp, he closed it and moved over. Makes
a Rudolph, by the way, also had a good camp.
I wouldn't put a hypercentage on it. Trabisky did beat amount.

(01:36:31):
I mean, it's been pretty clear. It's close. I wouldn't
put a hypercentage on it. I'm just a little super
I know there's gonna be some games in the ship here.
Why Mike Tomlin hasn't announced it, He's kind of been evasive,
and it's his call, by the way, and ownership has
nothing to do with it. It's it'll be Tomlin's call.
Mc canna's offense coordinat They've done a good job with Strabisky,

(01:36:51):
they've kind of revived his career. But to you know,
to be honest here, it's I mean, it's Trabisky should
be the starter. Now. I've been gone on record saying
the Pickle start the majority of the games. I still
believe that will be the case. And pick It definitely
handled himself really well because he he was a little
bit hesitant to throw the ball downfield in the first start,
and then that he started open up a little bit
and that's why he made it close to and Trabiskie Adam.

(01:37:15):
I don't like the Cowboys this year, man. I think
that it's just too much to overcome. Uh, they traded
away a number one receiver in my opinion, I know
a lot of people like Ceede Lamb, but I see
a lot of drop Seeds home playoff game against San
Francisco last year. One catch people keep believing in. Zeke
I said way back when when he went to Cobbo,
I'd have traded him. I just don't like running backs
sit out and don't fulfill their their duty for their

(01:37:36):
contract and got that money. He just doesn't run the same.
I'm looking at Dallas not even making the playoffs. Vegas
has moved the line. It's a plus one fifty tie
with Philly. I think Philly wins this division. I don't
like the schedule for Dallas. I think Dallas is a
nine in a football team and and they just have
too many holes. And this is a year they take
a major step back, and I have them missing the playoffs.
Anything you feel there or am I just reaching no?

(01:37:57):
In fact, you know, I don't know why one of
the sports books has Dallas Steel's the slight favorite to
win the NMC East. It's been it's been closer. After
all the moves that Philly has made starting with the
draft in free agency. But yeah, look they're down on
Mary Cooper. They're down there left tackle for the season.
Tyron Smith significant injury. Men. The hamstring came off the bone.
That's pretty bad. That's a that's a that's gonna be

(01:38:19):
a four month rehab based on whatever everything had happened
to him. Right now, they're gonna go with Tyler Smith there,
the rookie, the first round pick who's a project at
a Tulsa. Now, barring something unforeseen, Jason Peters should be
able to get a deal done. Talking to the Bears
about him, uh boy, they said he did a good
job or the fifteen games they thought he could still play. Now, look,
he turns forty one in January. I mean he's gotten

(01:38:42):
a little bit left. Will be a Hall of Famer someday.
But you don't want to have to go to Jason
Peters at this point. But they might have to. And
I'm telling you forre a Cowboys fan, Tyler Smith has talent,
but he's away, he was away from being ready. In fact,
he lost the left guard job. They had to move
him back to left tackle because the Tyron Smith's injury.
So I would agree with you. I just don't I
see Philly winning that division first time. By the way,

(01:39:04):
Dallas would be trying to win it being a repeat
winner for the first times so for in that division.
So yeah, I'm agreeing with you. I think they're gonna
drop off a little bit. And you know what, I
make my picks next week. But my early my early
feeling is we'll struggle to get that that extra that
seventh team to be that third wild card. Adam Kavlan
is joining us, all right. Speaking of making your picks, Adam,

(01:39:25):
it's traditional, you know, the defending Super Bowl champion gets
to host that very first game in the year. The
Rams will do that. They're an underdog at home to
an app point dogs to the Buffalo Bills. Are the
Bills as good as advertise? Are they should? They be
preseason favorites to win the Super Bowl this year? It's

(01:39:47):
fair to say it. Now, Let's not underestimate the loss
of Brian Dabo, their offense coordinator, who's now the head
coach of the Giants. Ken Dorsey easy at New oc
with their quarterbacks coach. He's calling the place for the
first time in his career. I think that is certainly
in pactful. They did add Von Miller to defense. That
should be impactful. They're paying him to be, you know,
provide a major impact. Uh. I do worry a little bit. Um.

(01:40:11):
I just worry about that that loss on offense with
a new play caller for the first time, because the
guy that really really coached Josh Allen Hard was Brian Dable.
So you can't underestimate that issue or not. They've had
a couple They're gonna have a couple of change. They're
gonna have a couple of changes on their offensive line,
but they should be okay, they should be right there.

(01:40:31):
They're gonna be right there with Kansas City Denver, who
I believe has a real shot to win the a
f C West. Yeah, i'd put them up there. I
think they have the best chance of all of them.
But I'm not saying they're a lock. Believe me. Uh.
The I would also tell you the a f C
is probably a little stronger than the NFC this season.
Adam Steve and I agree that there's some issues in Tampa.
We don't have to run down a lot. I think
everybody knows who they are, So let's talk about a

(01:40:52):
team nay could surprise some people. I like the Saints, man,
I like what they do. I like what they have
with Jami's Winston. I think Michael Thomas can return to form.
I love Crystal LaVey. You have Camara. We noticed could
be a suspension coming. But I just think that they
got some really good pieces there on the defensive offense.
Design of the ball division is not that good. I
think they got a shot that make some people kind
of open their eyes wide by October and go, hey,

(01:41:12):
you guys better watch out for them Saints. Well, just
a couple of things here. It's let's not forget that
there's no Sean Payton to to coach this football team.
Don't underestimate that his ability reaches players and get them
to play hard in the right way. So this is
this is something that we've not seen in a long
long time since his suspension many years ago. So it's

(01:41:32):
just a little different now. Camara. My understanding is that
if he gets suspended, it shouldn't beat It's not a lock,
but it shouldn't be until after the season. Uh. They
the NFL wants to see what law enforcement does. Is
what I was told by someone close the situation, So
we'll see what happens. But you've got Thomas coming back,
as you said, Jarvis Landry's added. You know, they had
a below average receiver corp last year, probably one of
the worst. And now you add Michael Thomas back, who

(01:41:54):
looks good, who looked good a lav Jarvis Slandry. But
they lost their their projected left tackle in uh Trevor Penning,
who's gonna be att a while James Herster's a journeyman,
will be the left tackle. They pretty much have everyone
else back. Tayson Mills is no longer quarterback. He's gonna
be a tight end sort of hybrid player. The defense
is always good, though they the Chauncey Gardner Johnson trade

(01:42:15):
does worry me. They're not very good safety right now, folks.
Let's face it, and remember this is a key point
for you Saint fans. The Chiefs did not even offer
the honey Badger Tyrone matthew and a contract to come back,
so that that would worry me. To your point, I
do believe they'll bounce back. I think they'll challenge for
a wild card. They won't win that division. Too many questions,
but they're gonna be a fun team to watch because

(01:42:36):
if it's so many changes, and again the Sean Payton factors,
Pete Carmichael will call the players their offensive coordinator. Alright,
one final question here, Adam. Normally we start the season
with six to seven new coaches around the NFL. This
year we have ten, five of which have been previous
head coaches the NFL five that are making their debuts

(01:42:56):
as NFL head coaches. Of those ten, who you most
intrigued about and following them through this season? Of the
new coaches, I would probably say that I got to
number one. I'm not saying they're gonna be good Giant fans,
but I'm I believe Brian Dabeles got a chance in
the Giants to surpressing people. Not not over five hundred,
but maybe seven or eight wins. They're gonna be fun. Offensively,

(01:43:19):
they have to figure out their offensive line. That's a
big problem. But he's put together a phenomenal coaching staff,
so I I believe day Ball has certainly got a chance.
And then a team that we just talked about, I'm
fascinated by Mike McDaniel. He's very odd, little quirky, kind
of funny like he's going up to people at the
combine reporters. Hey, my name is Mike. What's your name?
As we go up to people, that's crazy. He's so

(01:43:43):
quirky and odd, guys, It's either going to be a
complete home run or a complete disaster with Mike McDaniel,
I just as long as he reaches his players, I
think he'll be okay. I'm I'm fascinated to see what
happens there. I am a hundred percent with Mike mc
daniel on that one. By the way, the next time
we talk, we'll actually have a game under our book
and get a full preview of Week one in the NFL. Adam,

(01:44:03):
we cannot wait. Thanks so much for joining us. We'll
talk to you next week as Kapp and our Fox
Sports Radio NFL Insider. I mean we could sit there
and talk to him for a lot that break it
all of that mean we'd only do the surface stuff.
But next week we're actually gonna dig into actual game action.
All right, let's find out what's trending right now is
once again Mr Brian Finley, he's all over it, all

(01:44:27):
over You're not excited about the upkemy NFL season? Brian Right?
Oh no, I mean no, not like Fox Sports Radio
is built on the NFL. Not. If you don't talk
about it in every segment, you might lose your job
or something. Right, we put a premium on it. You know,
Tomorrow Rich and I will do our ten to two
show West Coast time, and you know, when we get

(01:44:49):
to the regular season, as you know, it's we got
ten games kicking off simultaneously. It's a free for all.
We have one last Sunday before we do that. But
I'm enjoying all the college upball today for sure, especially
since my Bruins one. Yeah, exactly, And Steve, I'm with you.
I'm a little bit more favoring the college football than
the NFL as far as the fandom is concerned. I

(01:45:09):
know that might be a hot take in the world
of sports radio, but you know what we are watching
right now is Lincoln Riley's debut at USC and Caleb
Williams and Jordan Addison all making their debuts for the Trojans,
and they've all well. Williams is linked up with Addison
for a touchdown. It is now seven to nothing. Actually
Rice just scored a touchdown, so it's seven is six Trojans.

(01:45:32):
The number fourteen team in the country. Late first quarter
that game in of course at the Coliseum to the game.
That's an embarrassing showing for number eleven Oregon as they
are just getting stomped on by number three Georgia to three,
six thirteen left in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs
converting on nine of ten third downs, so that defense

(01:45:54):
on third downs just not showing much for the Ducks.
Number nine Oklahoma is racing past the tap late in
the game, early fourth quarter thirteen the score there as
Dylan Gabriel has multiple touchdowns through the ear and scores
on the ground. Number sixteen Miami is obliterating Bethune Cookman

(01:46:15):
sixty three to thirteen. Early stages of the fourth quarter
there were Henry Parris Jr. The ball carrier for Miami,
has eclipse two hundred yards on the ground. He's got
three scores. This is an interesting one. In Fayetteville, Sam
Pittman and number nineteen Arkansas and a dog fight here
with number twenty three Cincinnati. They just wrapped up the
third quarter. It's seventeen Razorbacks, but the Bearcats scoring seventeen

(01:46:39):
points in the third quarter after getting shut out and
the opening half, so things tightening up there. One non
top twenty five matchup that has intrigued is Nebraska up
by just seven against North Dakota in the fourth quarter
twenty four to seventeen, eleven minutes to go in that one.

(01:47:00):
So if somehow North Dakota wins, then what happens to
Scott Frost. That's something that is to be determined. Number
twenty one, oh Miss is pouncing all over Troy twenty
eight to three, and just a couple of completed games.
I want to get two guys, including number six Texas
A and M finishing off Sam Houston State one nothing.
North Carolina holding on sixty three to sixty one against

(01:47:24):
app State, where the Mountaineers missed two two point conversions
in the final minute in just a dramatic wild ending.
East Carolina had a chance in an upset miss the
late field goal, and it's number thirteen North Carolina State
hanging on twenty one to twenty. Number eight Michigan winners
against Colorado State fifty one to seven. FCS Delaware finds

(01:47:46):
a way to beat Navy fourteen is seven. Iowa with
two safeties takes down FCS South Dakota State seven to three.
Great offense there for both teams. And then lastly Steve
and VJ. Yes you mentioned it. You see l A scoring, well,
they were down seventeen to seven, thirty five unanswered points.

(01:48:06):
To calm the nerves and take care of business at
home at the Rose Bowl against Bowling Green, Yeah, forty
five to seventeen. Dorian Thompson Robinson four scores, Steve so
two on the ground too, through the air, and he
looked pretty good. I don't know my smelling Heisman right now, right,
I mean if he accounts for four touchdowns in every

(01:48:29):
game and they go and when the national championship, yeah, well,
consist the main like Heisman, and considering Steve the upcoming
teams they have not the best teams. I think they
play every Alabama's school other than Alabama, so those stats
could really get jacked up quite a bit. We'll take it.
I'll take that. Brian great stuff man, always always great stuff.

(01:48:51):
By the way, he's talking about Nebraska here and Scott
frost Um. You know that this gets back to VJ.
The whole realignment of teams going into different conferences and
how they adjust. I mentioned a little bit of fear
for U c l A uh, yeah, they're beating up
on Bowling Green today, but if they move into the

(01:49:11):
Big ten, it's gonna be gonna be rough sledding, as
Nebraska has found out. I remember when they booed Boat
Polini out of town. Had seven straight years with at
least nine wins, at least nine wins every year that
he was there. They booed him out of town. They
give anything for a nine win season. Now, Scott Frost

(01:49:31):
fifteen and thirty at Nebraska going into today's game, and
again they're just trying to hang on against North Dakota.
By the way, that's not North Dakota State. North Dakota Dakota.
Dakota State is that school wins all the FCS championship,
not North Dakota. Big Sky Baby. I started my broadcasting
career in the Big Scott, so I know it very well. Yeah,

(01:49:52):
Scott Frost probably should have stated at Central Florida, man,
I get well, I mean, you want to go home cool,
but it's just not always set for you listen to
Big ten to get the credit it gets. But you
asked these teams that go that moved to the Big Tent.
You gotta go to Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State. You
gotta go play Northwestern's tough guys. I know they weren't
very good last year, but you know you better buckle
up your chinch strap real tight that day. Their physical Wisconsin,

(01:50:15):
Minnesota like these are hard places to go play physical
football teams. I know it's not the shiny uh s SEC,
but trust me, it's it's It's gonna be tougher either
when U c l A and and and and the Bruins,
you better get better at the offensive defensive line or
you're gonna go out there and get man handled on
some Saturday. Let me ask you this, when Michigan, UH
and USC and U c l A are all on

(01:50:37):
the same conference and the Wolverines travel to l A
to play at the College c M or the Rose Bowl,
First of all, I don't have to ask whether you'll
be there, because I know you'll be there. Uh. Give
me a little sense of the kind of money you're
willing to spend for tickets for you or your family
or everybody. Uh. And what will the makeup of the
crowds be? How much traveling will there be from Michigan

(01:50:59):
fans to the Colosseum or the Rose Bowl. Give me,
give me a view of what the stadiums will look
like if the U s C u c L are
hosting the Wolverines. First of all, I'll pay anything. That's
number one. I'll pay anything if I can go to
those type of games. But hopefully my stature and sports
and the sports taught radio industry will allow me to
just be able to just give ahead nod to the

(01:51:19):
security guard and walk my wife and kids up to
our to the to the box and watch the game.
So that that's what that's where I would really like
it to be. Play that idea exactly. But as far
as the crowd goes, Michigan travel as well, and there's
a huge Michigan alumni based in Los Angeles, so they'll
be at the games. I don't think half and do
you cee L a game half and half the USC game, Uh,

(01:51:40):
at the USC game U c L a half and half.
But yeah, the Michigan fans will travel and it will
give them a specifics of October or November game, So
it gives you a break from them, the brittle, the
brutal winners from Michigan to come out the sunny Los
Angeles where it's seventy nine degrees is e d degrees.
You can wear shorts in a T shirt. Heck yeah, man,
have you ever seen Rolls Bowl when Michigan comes out here, baby,

(01:52:02):
it's half and half baby. Stop playing with me. Man, Well,
I'll tell you what I remember when Wisconsin came at
It was Wisconsin Red U c l A had two
games against Wisconsin Rose Bowl in the nineties and it's
their home field, and it was a c A Red
because they'll pay anything for the tickets and pay any

(01:52:22):
tickets they'll give you if there's you go listen, I'll
give you a hundred bucks for those tickets. And you're
l A fans. We're getting their money back on their
season tickets with one game I don't care about. You're
literally offering me enough money to cover the costs for
the entire season. Why not? Sold sold in? Wisconsin won

(01:52:42):
both of those games. All right? Coming up on the
other side, V. G and I, we'll give us a
little thoughts on where it will be. A week from now,
we'll have an NFL game under the books. We'll have
Week one in the books. As far as college football,
how will all shake out a week from now. We're
gonna break it down coming up next. M hm m

(01:53:03):
hm h v J. You're like that. I'm like it is.
I got on the board now. Yeah, you just gotta
do your shoulders. You still got showed to Steve. You
just got do you shoulders. That's it. Just a two
step when I would go when I go to his wedding,
two step and I just hope that there's crab cakes
as an appetizer. H h That's it. Man, just moved

(01:53:26):
a show does That's all we want to thank our
crew today. Well, I thank Bobo for jumping on in
the place in Iowa. Sam had been there since I think,
uh Tuesday, I was about to say tuesday, right, Yeah,
he'd been on the board for a while. Brian family
giving us all the updates throughout today. He's psyched up
as we all are. That we got football to talk about.

(01:53:49):
Danny G Danny, you're all ready for Raiders Charters to
open up the season next week. Yeah, and not just
ready for that game, but the Sunday ticket pay men
came out of my checking account, so I'm I'm ready
for all the games. Do you pay? Do you pay
for the year. Are you paying monthly? How are the

(01:54:09):
seventy nine joint or the ninety nine jot No, I
have a student discount. Okay, I need that. I'm a
hotly you want to get off. Yeah, I won't tell
you what it is, but it's less than that. That's
why I we'll talk privately. See, I don't need to
get the Sunday ticket because I'm sitting here on Sundays.
So I got my free Sunday ticket here the Fox
Sports Radio, and then usually go from here to TV

(01:54:30):
so I get to watch it there, so I don't
have to invest. I did for years, by the way,
but I have to, man, I gotta. I'm such a
football I have to watch. And what I do is
I DVR a lot. See. I'm known as the DVR
king among my circle of my friends, my supports. Guy,
I will DVR every NFL game, and my wife can
vouch for this. I'll stay up till three and four
o'clock in the morning rewatching games because when I go

(01:54:50):
on air Monday and Tuesday, I don't want to just
talk about what I heard everybody else talk about. I
want to talk about what I saw, and and that's
why I think I could be different in this industry
because I watch every somebody's college football games, and I'll
go back home tonight when all the games are done.
If I'm still up one two in the morning, I'll
on a game that looked like it was a close
score and go back and rewatch the game. So I

(01:55:11):
need to ticket the two mar Key games today, at
least based on preseason rankings, Georgia Oregon and Ohio State
Notre Dame. One of those games is in the books,
Georgia Forte, Oregon three. Any chance that we'll see a
similar blowout Ohio State over Notre Dame. Ohio State thirty eight,

(01:55:36):
Order Dame. That's a pretty good blow up. Yeah. Three touchdowns?
Yeah three times now? But their three touchdowns better? Did
you see C. J. Strout in high school? Yes? Absolutely.
I mean it's so hard with these guys at Ohio State.
They put up these insane numbers and it has a
materialized in the NFL. This is gonna sound like hate

(01:55:58):
or stuff, but it's not. This is just the way
I really have looked at him analyze the game. From
a Michigan family, he had I know, but he had
a He looked at the weapons he had last year.
I understand it. And then two of them set out
and they still I can tell, so I I want
to see it this year. Uh Jackson um Jackson Smith

(01:56:21):
is as a as amazing at the wide receiver position.
We have three yards receiving in the bowl game last year.
So but this year, this year is gonna tell us,
trust me, we'll we'll see it. I think Noorda Dane
makes it a little close early, guys, but then just
the just the the talent overrides as the game goes on.
But I think Nororda Dane will show up and have

(01:56:42):
some and have some heart and some and some great
fruits and play hard today to start the game. But
then horseshoe on the road at night, national champion, uh,
national televised game. I think Ohio State pulls away late alright,
So I will not get a chance to talk to
you before that first in between the Bills and the Rams.
I mentioned earlier, the Rams are dogs in that game.

(01:57:04):
I don't know how many times that's happened. If any
Super Bowl champions get that first game at home, there
are two and a half point dog against the Bills.
You're a big Matthew Stafford guy, any concerns about that
elbow situation right now? Not concerns. But I always have
a little rule that if it bothers you in August,
it might be bothering you in December, and that is
for calls of concern. So if it bothers them now,

(01:57:26):
it's not gonna get better with him playing, So it's
gonna bother him late. But I I think, give me,
give me two rams. Give yeah, give me two rams
with the point give me everything on the Rams Thursday
and did the Bills are gonna win that game? I
think one of the unsung signings of the offseason was
Bobby Wagner. I mean the guy was still literally like,
let the NFL and tackle such. I mean, Seattle isn't
all this. This is a future Hall of Famer, no

(01:57:47):
questions asked about that gets a big deal from the Rams.
You know he's gonna feel revitalized. You know we saw
it a year ago. You know, you suddenly are surrounded
by talent with a team that has a chance to
win the Super Pro Bowl, and like the team he
just left in Seattle, I think he can make a
major because him and he's all over the field, huge impact. Listen,

(01:58:08):
I don't understand how they're a dog is Buffalo? Did
Buffalo add some offensive players? We don't know about Buffalo
once they were living in six last year. Guys like
I don't understand, why is this feeling that they were
like thirteen or fourteen exactly? Everyone was all heightened. They're
getting judged off that last game in Kansas City. But
you're also talking the best defensive NFL player in the

(01:58:30):
league in Aaron Donald. You're also talking about the best
corner in football and Jalen Rams and so Digs is
just gonna run wild and so five next Thursday night,
I listen, I'll tell you right now, give me the
rams by ten. Hold on a second, yes, MS, I'm
saying it right now, rams by ten. Then wait a second.
I better. I don't need to hit up by their

(01:58:51):
games right now, since I got any other games that
you like next week? Anything like? I know you're loving office.
Your Saints are five and app point favorites on the
road against the Falcons, favored on the road in Atlanta
five and a half. You give me the Saints with
the points Saints cover, all right? How about your Dolphins?
I got all your teams. There are three point favorites

(01:59:11):
at against the bad that's see, that's a game that's
gonna have said, I think the Pats are gonna have
a losing season. I'd be bad this year. Yeah. Did
you see Matt Gentleton and no one wants to talk
about in the media, right, did you have you guys
watched Matt Matt jon how you see? I hate to
do that they did because it is the preseason. It's
still I don't want to overhype someone because of the pretins.

(01:59:31):
I don't want to downplay. But yeah, I mean, it's
not just been the games. He is really struggled who
his best receivers exactly? They bring West far back now,
Julian Edelman, he's coaching the receivers in Miami. What are
y'all talking about? What's back with us? VJ has been
a lot of fun. It's been great man, Thanks for
having me. See this is awesome. But alright, great stuff

(01:59:52):
has always But it's just getting started because we got
a whole lot more coming up here. It's football season, folks.
