On this episode of Pac-12 Apostles, George Wrighster and Ralph Amsden recap a week that saw USC get its first conference win, Wazzu upset Wisconsin on the road, and Jonathan Smith showing massive guts by giving the ball to his hybrid fullback/linebacker Jack Colletto to get a win over pesky Fresno State. The guys recap all of last week's games, and preview the week's upcoming games, including Michigan State at Washington, Cal at Notre Dame, and argue about whether North Dakota State should be favored in Tucson. #fsrweekends

Speaker 1 (00:01):
All right, here we go, Pack twelve fans. This one's
for you. This it's the Pack twelve Apostles and only
the truth lives here. Twelve Apostles Apostles. I'm George Rice,
so he's around Hans and this is the Pack twelve Apostles.
The podcast by Pack twelve Fans, four Pack twelve fans

(00:23):
and college football fans all around, where you get the
absolute truth. We keep it at Hunting, which at all times. Um,
so last week actually, first again, remember the leave with
five star rating. Wherever you listen to your podcast and
leave a review, leave a review because obviously we always
love reading the reviews. And but we will start today though,

(00:45):
we will start today with a recap of what happened
last week because um yeah, because we take accountability. We
talk about who is going to who did the best,
what were the what was the outcome of last week? Um,

(01:08):
the outcome of last week was you went five and
six and I went six and five. But there was
one point when I was like one and No, there's
one point where I was like four and four and
you only had picked two? Right, Wait, hold up, how
is that possible when we only picked three games alike?

(01:33):
So how could I go six and five, I mean
five and six and you go six and five like
the ones I got right, you got wrong, the ones
you got right I got wrong. There was enough of
those there. There was one point in the day where
you were like on a like all time cold streak.

(01:53):
It was like you were like one in five at
one point, and I was like, Oh, this is gonna
be so bad. And then you finished pretty pretty strong.
We did get a review. If you want me to
read it, it's terrible. Uh this is a two star review. Um, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, uh.

(02:13):
And it it has to do with your language, believe
it or not, foul language and lacking show prep. I've
loved listening to Ralph's insights for years. Um. I miss
his extemporaneous rants as he returned from away games. I
used to um uh do. I used to drive to

(02:34):
a su road games and on the drive home I
would record uh stream of conscious. Up until recently, I
never had any concern listening to Ralph in any show
he appeared on, and would be able to listen in
the truck with my kids and get them excited about
the game of football. Now, Rice Ster's desire is to

(02:54):
be real edgy and drop the F bomb. Lets me know.
He doesn't care about follows or the audience specifically. I
think he's referring to your take on USC leaving the
uh oh okay, it's effect on your back to pack stance.
He says that that's totally unprofessional. Um and yeah, so

(03:18):
he's he is uh, he is upset. So that's a
two star review, which brings us down to a four
point four out of five. We we haven't had many
two star reviews, so that's kind of a I don't
I don't know if we can earn that one back
if you maybe if you sing a lullaby or do
something kid friendly. Maybe unprofessional. Wow, that's a big word. Anyways,

(03:44):
I mean, you know, let's listen. We appreciate the review anyway,
thank you, you know even Yeah. So anyways, all right,
so let's go over to games from last week. So
we had uh so oh so Southern Utah and Utah.

(04:05):
Now where do we set this line at Ralph forty
and a half. And I think we we both thought
no close, No, no, bro, you you said Southern Utah.
No I didn't. I picked Utah. No, I picked Utah.

(04:26):
You picked Southern ut Southern Utah, PA, you know bad,
I said, I know players on Southern Utah's team, and
I feel very bad for what's about to happen to that.
You know, we we set the line at fifty points.
We set the line at fifty points, and I took
the over took you took Southern Utah. Absolutely not. I'm

(04:49):
going back to listen to the tape. Have have you
seen that commercial where people go back and listen to
the tape. Oh yeah, no, we're in that moment right now. Yeah. Okay,
so now we have a dispute um. So anyways, so
Southern Utah there was nothing to be gained from that game.
They won by billion. Hey, Southern Utah did get screwed

(05:12):
over by the refs five seconds into the game though,
and I do think that that deserves just a little
bit of conversation. I don't know if you saw this,
within like four seconds. So Southern Utah kicked off. They
onside kicked the opening kickoff and got it. In fact,
it was a former Arizona High school football quarterback Ran Jensen,

(05:35):
who was actually playing on kickoff team, that picked up
the ball. The revs ruled that it had not gone
ten yards. It absolutely had the REVS rule that it
had not gone ten yards, and guess what, there was
no way to overturn the call because it was Unpacked
twelve network, which means the only camera focused on the
play was like stationed on the moon, and so not

(05:59):
that Southern Utah every would have had a chance. It
was seven seven at one point, which, by the way,
Utah has yet to give up any passing touchdowns, only
quarterback rushing touchdowns. Um and uh and and shout out
to Anthony Richardson who lost to Kentucky this last week
and his Heisman campaign ended. But other than that, it
was just nothing Southern Ukah Utah could do. UM. Definitely

(06:21):
not blaming the opening on side kick and Pack twelve
Networks camp. But but what's nice. What's nice, though, is
when it's a game on Pack twelve network where a
Pack twelve team isn't the one getting screwed by the
lack of technological advancements because you're playing out of conference games.
When it's two Pack twelve teams and something like that happens,

(06:45):
then like there's no choice but to be angry because
our conference has terrible broadcasts on a seldom watch network. Yep, alright,
next game up. This is another I told you sole
game after we've fixed the other one. So Colorado at
air Force. This was aw I remember this was what
one point for it. It was seventeen, and I believe

(07:09):
I said something along the lines of like everything in
me thinks that you're right and thinks the air Force
is gonna win. But the idea of taking a Mountain
West team in the same state over a Pack twelve
team and giving them seventeen points is not something I
could do. And then I said that I would put

(07:31):
the most money on that particular bed. So that was
a massive, massive l for me. And on Unafraid Show,
that was the one where I risked the most pretend
money and took a took a huge l that and
it was it was at one point it looked like
Colorado was gonna come back, but J. T. Shrout fumbled
the snap on the second place play of the game

(07:52):
and then put on gloves like he was Kurt Warner,
and it was embarrassing. They had they had a chance
to draw it within a touchdown I think this is
in the second half, and they fumbled um on what
was probably a touchdown, but I think, uh it, it
didn't get overruled, but it looked like the ball had

(08:13):
crossed the goal line. They gave the ball to air Force.
Air Force marched down and and and instead of Colorado
being down seven, they were down and it was just
it was brutal. Oh yeah, did you see the final
Did you see the final stats for J J T.
Shrout No. Five for twenty one for fifty one yards

(08:35):
and an interception an air Force one for five for
eight yards. Dude, there's no way in hell I'm letting
anybody throw five passes and beat me. There's there's no
way I'm not I'm not doing it. But then they
all then the other party is didn't we talk about

(08:56):
the fact that it didn't matter who where, whether Lewis
was the quarterback, J T. Shroud whoever. That this team's
offensive coordinating is terrible. Carl Dorell made a bad higher
and that's gonna get him fired. It stinks, but that's
the truth. Like I was rooting for Carl Durell's success,

(09:16):
but and I still would like him to be successful.
But it feels like the writing is on the wall
that this is that this is inevitable. Yeah, and yeah,
I mean you have. You got a lot of blame
place at the previous offensive coordinator's feet. And I just
don't I never read a hundred and sixty two yards

(09:38):
total yards in this game. Air force is not Georgia.
Like that's a damn shame. Yeah. This team is by
far the worst team in the Pack twelve. It's not
even close. Yeah. And and their schedule does not get
It's not like they got a bunch of cup gigs

(10:00):
coming up. It's gonna be a tough road. Yep. Uh,
next game up, surprise, surprise, you had the Washington State
Cougars beat Wisconsin the ranked Wisconsin uh, seventeen to fourteen.
Who picked on that game? Or or did you get

(10:20):
that one wrong too? I actually got this one right.
You got it wrong? Yes, yes, I don't know why
you keep throwing it out there. I do. I do
remember that one. Yeah, so I thought when Wisconsin was
going to drown um Washington State. But Wisconsin's quarterback situation

(10:40):
with Marx is not where it needs to be right now. Not.
And Washington State with with with Cameron at quarterback, he
was just good dude, like he was finding a way
to make, to make plays when it mattered the most. Yeah,

(11:02):
I think that the I think the trust in him
is paying off. Um. You know, I I just I'm
not sure that there's anybody that's been given the leash
that that Cameron ward Um has been given. And I
think that that, you know, he can throw an interception
and there's no risk of him getting pulled. He cannot

(11:24):
make the right read, there's no They want him to
figure it out, and I think that that is super helpful. Um.
Would you what would you say that Washington State won
this game or that Wisconsin lost this game? Because I
I watched I think I watched this game from start
to finish, but I was really paying like Wisconsin kept

(11:46):
marching down and then I don't know it, Wisconsin felt
like the better team, but it just felt like there
was you know in basketball sometimes when it feels like
there's like an invisible film over the him. Yes, yeah,
that's how like that. As soon as they would get
to like the thirty yard line, everything would just fall apart.

(12:07):
And the energy for Washington State on defense was phenomenal. Yes, yes,
but what Washington State's offense was not that great. They
didn't run the ball. Well, yeah, they were under three
hundred yards of total offense. It wasn't pretty, but they
found a way to win. I still don't think that
this team is super good because at quarterback, Cameron's struggled,

(12:28):
you know, being being accurate as he needs to be.
But they were if you get them in a closed game,
they find a way to make Like, they found a
way to make some plays when it mattered the most.
I agree, and and to hold to hold Wisconsin's primary
running back uh under a hundred yards rushing, like, how

(12:50):
often does that happen? Braylon Allen, He's he's very talented.
He's gonna he's gonna find his way. But his longest
rush on the day was seventy seventeen yards. Means he
had twenty carries for eighty one yards outside of that
one rush. That is, if if this is how Washington
States defense is gonna be playing, they're gonna be in
a lot of close games. Yeah. But the but the

(13:12):
other thing is that the other part is that is
that yes, that is true, but they're gonna play some
better offenses in the in the back twelve, which are
gonna be able to to to score the ball without
turning the ball over. So that's true, but I'd rather
be too. And oh while I'm still trying to figure
out Oh yeah, I'm all about hanything out big facts.

(13:34):
All right. You and l V at Cow Cal twenty
U and l V fourteen. Now this one you got
right and I got wrong. Mm hmmm mmmmm. They're starting.
I'm sensing a theme. Um and Cal started out hot, dude.
They got scored seventeen points in the first half, you know,

(13:56):
was seventeen and seven. And you were like, okay, cool
started out fourteen. You're like, okay, I like it. I
like it Cow. And then uh un l V made
some adjustments on defense and they couldn't move the ball
worth it damn Yeah. No touchdowns for Cal after the
first quarter. None and that and and and they were

(14:19):
starting to actually get past uh Cal's offensive line and
and harass Jack Plumber a little bit. You look at
Jack Plumber stats thirty nine, but he was checking down
a whole bunch. Um. You know, I don't I think
outside of one thirty seven yard Jeremiah Hunter catch. You know,
you're you're looking at probably like average average per completion

(14:43):
is was it was like six or seven yards and
so um he they picked and chose their spots and
and they did enough to win. But it was a
little bit scary there at the end. UNLV had the
ball down six late in the fourth with an opportunity
UM to to win the game, and and they just
you know, they didn't pull it out. But that was there.

(15:06):
There was a second there where I was like, Wow,
it's cal really gonna blow this. Uh they didn't, and
I guess you give them credit for uh for that,
but that was um. Yeah, the the last that last
drive of the game, I think, UM you and AV
I think might have thrown an interception to UM to

(15:26):
ultimately lose. But I was I was worried for a second.
I was like, all right, Cow's really gonna lose at
home to u N l V and that that would
have been disastrous for the conference. But you know, they
get a win, they get to move on. Um. They're
also too and I believe and so uh you know,
and they didn't look bad. They just looked super uninspired
after the first quarter. Yep, all right, Uh Portland's state

(15:49):
at Washington. This was this is another game I got
got right of fifty two to six, one of us
got this. What are you talking about? One of us
got We both went Portland State. This is one of
the ones. What was the what was the line like
forty or something like? Either way, we both said Portland's state.

(16:14):
You are a legend in your own mind today. Oh
my god, Bro, I'm sitting here looking at the games.
I'm like, Bro, I'm good. I'm guti around around here.
But this is crazy. But anyways, Caitlyn, the board has
the team playing well. They're doing well against bad teams,

(16:36):
which is exactly what you are supposed to do. Like,
you play good versus teams that that that stink. That's
how you win. Yeah, for the last two years, we've
been talking about back in one running back on this
team just break a twenty yard run and they had to. Uh,
they had um Wayne Talapapa had twelve carry for nine

(17:00):
four yards, Cameron Davis had ten for seventy, Richard Newtson
Ruten Newton had ten for fifty nine, and Michael Poenix
Junior three for almost three forty yards. And so like,
this is what you're supposed to look like. This is
what Washington was supposed to look like for the last
couple of years. And it just something wasn't firing, something
wasn't right there, And then they also took care of
business on the defensive side of the ball. You know,

(17:23):
I would love to get back to the days where
big sky teams are of no threat or consequence whatsoever.
Shoot him like, thanks for coming, take take your million dollars,
go on your way, exactly. We don't want to be
like these teams that played Sunbelt teams and and paid
them to come beat the faith them to get ned

(17:45):
in that behind. Hey that is wow. Oh. On a
on another note about the review, though you've been doing
shows with me for years, do I feel more in
your head? Do it? Do? Do I feel more edgy
than I used to be? No? No, that's exactly. It

(18:07):
was like, oh he feels the need to be edgy.
I was like, nothing has changed. Yeah, it's the you
returned the energy that USC put out to the conference exactly.
So I'm not. I'm dude, I'm not. Don't worry about it.

(18:28):
I'm not. I'm not worried. I would say, I would
say that if you were listening to this college football
podcast with your children in the car. Uh, generally safe? No, no, likely, Yeah,
like you're generally safe. Yeah, make a star review for
USC athletics for going to the Big Tent exactly, exactly.

(18:51):
Don't blame don't blame the Yeah, you don't blame the guy.

l A versus Alabama State forty to seven? Who won

(19:16):
this game? Allegedly Ralph Well, I got this one. But
the whole thing about it was because fifty was insane
and and yes, yes this he had a fifty and
a half spread and U c l A had the
ball plenty of times with the opportunity to actually overtake

(19:36):
the spread in this and they just didn't do it. Um,
but it came really really close. I had a hard
time with fifty and a half. You thought it was
gonna happen, and I think it teetered right there at like, um,
what was the final score? Forty seven or something like that. Yeah,
so it was close. Um, it was close. But this

(19:56):
is another one of those games where, um, you know, you,
what what do you do when every time do you
want to do what Utah did I want to just
keep going shoot for eighty or whatever? Uh? But yeah,
so I think I don't know, this is what you
you would have expected, This is what you would have
hoped for. Um, if you're U c L A fan,

(20:18):
you know the few of you that are that are
left out there that actually go to the games. Um,
this was a you know, uh, you could have gone
somewhere and done something else mid second quarter avoided the traffic.
Oh yeah yeah, And people were like, are gonna be
looking at you? Ce L A some kind of way
for the for the fan numbers, bro. It was actually

(20:39):
on Saturday. It had been raining on Friday Saturday. It
went from what was an inferno in the week before
to a rain game versus uh Alabama State. Absolutely not Bro,
Absolutely The announced attendance announced attendance for this game was
almost thirty four. Thus, okay, so it went up and

(21:01):
went up from Yeah, people had tickets, but as far
as the actual number of people that that showed up, uh, well.
The one thing in this game that that stood out
to me that I did enjoy was the opportunity to
see Ethan Garber's play some football. So um, he got
meaning meaningful ish snaps. He went fourteen of eighteen hundred

(21:22):
sixty four yards in an interception, so you know, that
was kind of that was kind of cool because he
I think he's the future. He rushed for a couple
of touchdowns. Um, that might make him not feel like
uh at the end of the year, that might really
make him feel like he's you know, yeah, I don't know.
They like the They like the young kid that they
just got out of Englewood High School who's red charting

(21:45):
this year. So we'll see, we'll see. Buddy, Ethan, I
wouldn't mind having him. I wouldn't mind having him. So
I'm a big Ethan Garbers fan. He's one of those
guys that statistically in high school kind of like Jayden
Daniels who like rewrote the card books, and you're just
hoping to see some glimpses of that at the college level. Yeah, uh,
Arizona State at Oklahoma State. This game. I know I

(22:11):
won this game. Um yeah, we're both on the same
sides of this. It were it came. It went about
the way that we thought. Um, so this is my
question for you. In this game, it was I on
the state, was driving to end the second half, they
had a fourth and six from Oklahoma State thirty. They

(22:33):
elected to kick a field goal with a kicker who's
really struggled beyond he's been good. He won the job
late Carter Brown over j Feeley's kid. Jas Feely won
the job. Late kicked four field goals last week, but
the deep field goals have looked pretty rough in practice.
So they have him line up for a forty eight
yard field goal. He misses and instead of, you know,

(22:56):
instead of possibly going for it to to tie the game, Um,
they they play her and ball, they get conservative. They
missed the field goal, and then from that point on
it was it wasn't a s He was never really
in it. After that, they had one drive where they touchdown. Um,
Oklahoma State didn't look like world beaters. But I think
the main gripe of Arizona State fans in this game

(23:17):
was just that it was very boring that you never
felt in it, like there there was no life in
the game. Dude. It was an emotionless wreck. It was
just it was just like it was like reading like
an actor reading words off of a page. Yeah. I

(23:39):
struggle with the idea that you have Emery Jones at quarterback,
and you don't just put him out on a design
like you don't. Hell, they had seven rushes and pretty
much all of them were like scrambles. Yeah, yeah, that
I I don't know. The way that I look at
it is if you're going to have him back there,
you gotta you gotta make use of him. The D

(24:00):
fence was fine, Kyle Slowli looked great. Oklahoma State looks good.
They may have a whole another uh situation going on
because who you thought Arizona State's best linebacker was gonna be?
Is not their best linebacker right now? Yeah? Yeah, I mean,
but it's it's not Merlin Merlin Robertson, Like he had

(24:21):
a good freshman year, but it's like no one was
scheming for him and they were basically sending him on
blitz is uh. And I think that set unfair expectations
for the rest of his career. Kyle Solis a guy
who's put put in the work, you know, I think
this is his fifth year there, and and uh, it
make it makes sense to me. He led the team
in tackles last year. The one thing in this game
that I also stood out to me was Oklahoma State

(24:44):
had an offensive lineman that messed up twice, had two
different penalties called on him, and they yanked him. And
I was like, man, that's gotta be how Arizona State's
about going about this because they had Arizon State had
another game with ten penalties and they looked on disciplined
and shippy the entire time. And there doesn't seem to
will be any consequence for for players losing their composure
or getting off script and ten penalties. Facts. Now, Validae

(25:11):
had a good game, twenty one rushes for a hundred
and eighteen yards. He did have a long of forty two,
so it wasn't like a ton of energy after that,
but but overall that was like the first run of
the game. Yeah, um, I saw some good things out
of Elijah Badger. But this Oklahoma State team, it's weird
because they're not excellent, but they're damned you're not bad

(25:33):
like they are in this weird gray area of like
like they could lose to a lot of teams, but
they'll beat most teams, but they can't beat the elite teams. Yeah,
they teams like them. I think they're like a twelve
to fifteen you know, They're like a twelve to fifteen

(25:56):
ranked team to me. Yeah, they did lose a lot
of talent and players of last year's team. They got
a massive old line and I think they're well coached
and their quarterback will have some good days. Yeah, yeah,
they did. They did. On the broadcast, they played that
I'm forty rant back to ran with the you play
to win the game? Yeah, yeah, that was pretty cool.

(26:16):
That's cool, all right? USC and Stanford forty one to
uh who won this game? We? I did? I did? You?
You almost did because of the amount of times that uh, Stanford,

(26:36):
you know, piste away. Yeah, because it's only an eight
and a half point point spread. So yeah, it ended
at nine and a half. And you you you said
you were really comfortable at eight and a half, and
you were almost right. You were almost right. But Stanford
wasn't really doing anything with the yards they were gaining.
USC fans were watching this this game, and I don't

(26:58):
understand what game they were watching. I do not know
what game they were watching, because they were like, oh
my god, this team could be the best in the nation.
I was like, are you watching Stanford drive up and
down the field? Dude? They they actually got an interception
on that jump ball that they throw, which never ever

(27:18):
ever happens ever, ever ever. I think it's since I've
been watching Stanford football since like two thousand and three
when they started doing it, I've never I've never well, no,
I'm sorry. Only one other time have I seen that
an interception be the result of that jump ball play
that they throw. Only one other time. And it wasn't

(27:40):
even like, like, what what happened? The kid tipped it
and then he caught it himself. It was incredible. And uh.
And they also got another fumble inside to ten, and
they got another turnover inside the red zone, dude, And
that was in the first half. But Stanford was marching
up and down the field. They were running the hell

(28:00):
out of the football. So I'm like, yes, USC's offense
looked incredible in the first half, incredible. Stanford could not
stop a nose lead. But you cannot tell me that
you're okay with this defense. This is not a winning defense.
If your offense gets stopped at all, you have a problem. Right,

(28:21):
This was the big This was the they are who
we thought they were game, right, this is this is
exactly who he said USC was going to be going
into the season. They're gonna be able to move the ball,
but can they stop anybody, uh from from running it?
And they gave up two one yards on the ground
and one. I think USC won the turnover battle for

(28:44):
nothing and only one by thirteen. Yeah, there's something. And
three of them wearing the red zone, two of them
iside the ten mm hmm. And I tell you what though,
the the new guys Cayley Williams, Travis di Jordan Aison,
if they all three play like stars, you're probably not

(29:05):
gonna You're not gonna shut this team out. Ever, they're
going to score. It's it's a matter of whether or
not their defense is going to be able to do
anything about it. Capitalizing and creating turnovers can be the
key to having a very successful season. But if you
run into a team that takes care of the ball,
you're gonna have a problem, a major problem. Yea. If

(29:25):
this wasn't a four nothing turnover advantage for for USC,
I don't think they win. Yeah, so for everybody. And
I've heard a lot of praise in the last couple
of days. I've heard a lot of praise saying I
don't see anybody beating this USC team in the Pac twelve.
But like you get a team that protects the ball,
and yes, and then because Utah is good enough to

(29:49):
actually get some stops too, Yeah, you're gonna you're gonna
find yourself and one of them Lincoln Riley specials, buddy.
But but obviously, yeah, this is a team that is
headed or mm hmm. Nine ten wins easy, easy, probably probably,
And just with the efficiency and the Notre Dame game

(30:09):
looks looks much more winnable now because they lost their
quarterback and they're O and two now, so they Yeah,
things got a lot more the path has been cleared
a little bit more for um for this team. All right,
we have Eastern Washington and Oregon. Now, I know I

(30:33):
won this game, and I know you lost this game, yes, sir, Yes,
seventy fourteen, seventy fourteen. Uh, this felt it was It
was weird. How How do you think I feel about
this game? I don't know. I mean it was bo

(30:56):
Nix had the same number of incompletions as he did
touchdown passes. He's five touchdowns. That that maybe delays some
of the anxiety. I I did hear that they cheered, Yes,
they did after did you cheer the guy coming in after?
So after he threw five touchdowns. Here's the thing, Oregon's

(31:17):
backfield is the best backfield I've seen in I cannot
remember how long. Like this backfield. Irving is good, Dollars
is good, Cardwell is good, Whittington is good. Bro uh
seven McGee's gonna get some carried Like this is a
really good backfield, like some dynamic guys who can make
people miss. And the good thing was is that the

(31:40):
defense they did not allow, like they barely allowed anything.
This was a dominating performance. They tackled well because I've
seen games where Oregon played lesser competition and other people
do and and do to squirting away they're making plays.

(32:00):
They they didn't just give up stuff. They looked like
that they were embarrassed a week before, which I thought
was very important for them going for it, Like they
needed to look like like they got their ass kicked
in week one and and they weren't happy about it.
So yeah, yeah, there wasn't a whole lot to be
getting in that game, um Oregon. But but Eastern Washington

(32:26):
that they did throw for like four hundred yards a
week before, and they threw for less than a hundred
in this game. And that's that is super encouraging after
you watched what happened when when the dam broke against
against Georgia, that that was very big. And also the
tempo Oregon played with was phenomenal. They ran so many
plays in this game. You want to talk about like

(32:48):
the Texas A and M getting upset by Appalachian State
because they only ran thirty eight plays, Like Oregon ran
more passing plays than that and ran the ball forty
eight times. That's what you want to see is just quickness,
just running tempo. Facts um Oregon State thirty five, Fresno

(33:10):
State thirty two, Jake Hayner special. Jake Hayner threw the
ball all over the place as we expected, thirty forty
six um chance Nolan was about fifty hair over fift completions.
Oregon State didn't run the ball great, They ran it okay,

(33:32):
But Jonathan Jonathan Smith came with the with the grand
cajone is to uh to go to win the game
on the last play with the wild cat, which your boy,
um uh yeah, Jake coleto the quarterback turned Mike all
Stock turned, um, dude, his his hero has to be Um.

(33:58):
Oh what's what's his name out done with the Saints.
Taysom Hill? Oh maybe, yeah, yeah, that's his if you
go to the drafts and yeah, he's like, yeah, I'm
Taysom Hill. I'll do anything. I'll play personal protector, I
can play quarterback in an emergency wild catch you you know,

(34:20):
like he's actually creating a position in football for guys
like this. I love it. It's so much fun. As
the Arizona Cardinals fan, I just watched Justin Reid. Um, Dude,
he's a hell of a kicker. Bro, Yeah, it's really good.
So I love the idea of this, Like you can,
he kicked it through the damn uprights before. You know.

(34:42):
What I like about this decision from Um from Oregon
State is that I don't think regardless of the result,
whether Jack Coletto gets in on that or not, I
don't think anybody affiliated with Oregon State thought that was
the wrong call. Correct. You gotta you gotta ride with
your guy. You gotta ride with your short yard of specialist.

(35:03):
It was his second touchdown of the day. You gotta
have that attitude that you know Fresno State can't stop us.
You don't want to give them the opportunity to get
the ball back, which is I mean, you know, you
don't want to go into overtime against Jake Hayner. It
was like a healthy fear of Jake Hayner and a
healthy belief in your guys. And I think we're down
to the point where we only have to deal with

(35:24):
Jake Hayner one more time in this conference and then
it is good riddance forever. Okay. So this Oregon State team,
though they got through their first two tests, they are
two and oh. They're gonna be three and oh after
this week after they play Montana State. This team has
headed for a ball game. They they got through, like

(35:47):
them getting through the preseason or the non conference unscathed
was the key to them being um was the key
to them actually going to a ball game. So good
on that, alright. Mississippi State last game thirty nine, Arizona seventy.

(36:09):
I know I lost this game. I lost this game,
um damn. And in watching this game, uh, there was
a pick early that got called back because Jaden Delora
ended up with three credited picks even though he threw
one earlier that got called weight No no, no no, no, no, no.

(36:30):
I didn't get I was like, what the hell are
you doing? The one where he scrambled out to the
left and then threw it up. I was like, where
he had He had the ball for like a full
fifteen seconds before throwing it down the field. That one. Yes,
I was like, oh my god, bro, like, why would
you do that? Why would you do That's him? Though,

(36:50):
that's him, Like that's this is this is the Jaden
Dolora experience. You had an SEC team coming to Tucson
and Arizona made interesting for a minute, but I told
you this team is not where they need to be
talent wise yet. But I expected them to be able
to compete a little bit better and they did. They did.

(37:13):
It was eighteen intended a half time I throwing three interceptions,
Jane de Laura throwing three interceptions but completing twenty three passes,
Like that's the trade off you had him. You had
a situation at quarterback the last couple of years where
you would have been happy to complete twenty three passes

(37:33):
over to game period, like he is, he is gonna
try to do too much in so in games where
where he's not under duress in games where you can
actually control the tempo, He's gonna do some really positive
things for you. However, if you're in a situation where
you get down and they're running, game is super bottled up.

(37:56):
Like you have to understand that without a thirty four
yard run from from Wiley this day would have rushed
for six yards on the day after the adjusted for
the sacks that Dolora took. Yeah, six yards on the
day if you take away one through So they're not
able to run the ball. Everything is dependent upon that
passing game. And Dolora did what he could. Uh. And

(38:18):
then and then I told you those Arizona defensive backs
they weren't gonna stop anybody. And so this this game
was better, I think than the final result. Let be
and I and I'm not as frustrated with Dolora. And
I just think that he was really trying to get
him back in the game. Uh. And he put way
too much on on his own shoulders, and he made

(38:39):
some ill advised throws downfield, but he was trying to
make something happen. So um that nothing about this game
has me concerned or worried in any way. They are
who we thought they are. There there are four win team,
three four win team, and with the chance, maybe with
maybe a chance to be a little bit better, to

(39:00):
hang in some of these games, a little bit better.
But it can't be all on your quarterback trying to
make things happening. So you can't, you know, you can't
get down early, and you can't not be able to
run the ball. That's their biggest thing. If if they
get bottled up by any of these other Pack twelve
teams and they're fully depend on throwing, it's gonna be
the same result. Yep. Fox Sports Radio has the best

Al Right, so, uh now we will well actually recap first,
So how would you grade this weekend? Well, this past
weekend for the Pack twelve because obviously there was an
inter squad game between USC and Stanford Arizona, So Arizona loss,

(39:48):
Colorado lost, and Arizona loss, So two of the worst
teams in the conference. One actually probably the well the
two worst teams in the conference, and then probably the
fourth or fifth worst team in the conference lost everybody
else won. Yeah, I give it a C plus. And

(40:11):
it was really like it was. It was buoyed by
Washington State winning on the road at Wisconsin. That's actually huge.
Do you give it a C plus? I mean, we
wait plus? Why did you expect Mississippi State to beat
Arizona No? I mean, yes, I expected that's happen. Yet
did you expect Air Force to beat Colorado? I did expect. Therefore,

(40:34):
I didn't expect it to be a blowout. Okay, But
well I did. But and did you expect Arizona State
to beat Oklahoma State? No? Okay, So that was a
great weekend. That's not a great week You have to
grade based on what happened, not based on what your
expectations are. You don't grade on a curve. It's based

(40:55):
on the overall performance of the conference. In Arizona State
lost a game to a highly ranked Big twelve team.
Mississippi State is a middle of the pack SEC school
and they had a three touchdown win over Arizona. You
can't be go given out v's and a's. Cal had
to stop when Cal had to stop you at on

(41:15):
the final drive and stopped from moving. A win is
a win without I tell you what, without without that
Jack coleto touchdown. This is this week. To me, it's
a C minus held up only by the statement. So
like that that push it up to a C plus.

(41:36):
And then the other thing is when you have to
conference teams that play each other and one gets a
bunch of massive flaws exposed, you have to factor that
in as well. So USC looked really good on offense,
but they did not look to me to be a
team that can compete with the biggest and best when
it comes to the way that they play defense. So
that a growing concern there. So it's good that they

(41:59):
didn't lose was to Eastern Washington or Alabama State or
UNV or anything like that. But it also, like B
implies good week, this was above average. Okay, So all right,
so this upcoming week week three, I will go in
chronological order to make this easier because we've struggled with
alphabetical order and chronological order on this podcast. Apparently, um,

(42:23):
all right, South Alabama at U c l A. What's
the line on this game? Oh and we and we
have no Friday games again, which is think that Yeah,
uh so U c l A is favored by fifteen
and a half. In this game, South Alabama comes in

(42:46):
at two, and oh they beat Central Michigan and they
beat Nichols. So the Central Michigan one. You know, Central
Michigan actually gave Oklahoma State a good game, and I
think it was the same margin of victory Oklahoma State had.
So I don't know what makes them think that South
Alabama's gonna be able to come into to u c

(43:07):
l A and keep it close, but that is what
the point spread indicates. Give me the Bruins, Give me
the Bruins. Is that an eight? That's an eight? Clap? Yeah,
that sounds like more than eight claps. Is that enough

(43:29):
enough claps to cover the spread? Yes? Yes, give me
U c l A. Okay, so, uh, South Alabama has
a quarterback's named Carter Bradley. He does a pretty good
job of taking care of the ball. He's got six
d yards passing six touchdowns on the season, has only
been sacked three times. Um, if he goes off, then

(43:50):
maybe this will be closer than anticipated. But I think
with the two warm up games and everything's kind of
moving on all cylinders, I will also go with U
c l A to cover the fifth and and a half.
All right, Cal at Notre Dame? Give what what? Actually? First?
What is the line on this game? Before I get
into I got failed? Gosh, So I want you to

(44:14):
guess the over under before I give you the line. Oh,
this is a dirt, cheap over under. I'm gonna go
with for college what would be low? Forty two would
be low? You were off by one and a half
forty and a half. Yeah, so its misera. Notre Dame

(44:37):
favored by ten and a half points. Okay, Cal only
scored thirty four points against u C. Davis so and
then twenty points against you and LV, so that's reasonable.
And Notre Dame only scored ten verses Ohio State and
twenty one versus Marshall, Lord, have mercy? Are we in
for like a seventeen and nineteen game, seventeen sixteen aime?

(45:00):
Like we saw on Monday Night Football seventeen sixteens of
cow cover. They're basically what they're saying is this is
a if you want, if you want Notre Dame to
win and the under to hit, It's is what you're
looking at. So what do you think? Do you think

(45:22):
Col scores twice? Do you think there are four total
touchdowns in this game. Okay, So Notre Dame has a
new quarterback, so interesting note about will you be tuning
into this game to hear the brand new pairing on
NBC of Jack Collinsworth and Jason Garrett. Jack collins is

(45:47):
he related to Chris Collinsworth? It's his son, of course,
it's no bounds. Oh hey, I'm just trying to get
to my family to the point where we can have
some nepotis me too, buddy? Okay, So Tyler Buckner is
out for Notre Dame. I think you think they said
he's out for four months. Edge and Drew Pine is

(46:10):
in so yeah, yes, it's in South Bend, all right.
I And the line is and the line is what
ten and a half for Notre Dame. I'm gonna go
with Notre Dame. I refuse to believe that they will

(46:31):
lose three games in a row. I am going to
I'm not saying that Cal is gonna win. But Jack
Plummer played quarterback in the Big Ten. This isn't gonna
be some scary new environment for him. I think Cal
has uh some composure and maybe it's a twenty four

(46:54):
to seventeen Notre Dame win. I'm gonna take cal to
cover the ten and a half. M nope, ah actually Nona, Yeah,
I was gonna say, you're gonna end up using this
to say you were right either way. Yeah, I am

(47:15):
gonna stick with I don't like it though it's not
it's not sitting will but anyways, Oh, this is an
interesting matchup Colorado at Minnesota. The offensive coordinator who got
fired last year from Minnesota travels back up to Minnesota,

(47:37):
but this time with Colorado. What happens there, Ralph and
what is the line? Well, so here's the deal. No
matter what the line is, Minnesota is gonna try to
triple it. But it's currently sitting at Minnesota minus twenty
seven and a half. The twenty seven and a half, yes,

(48:03):
bro a, no way, a no way in hell, no way,
no way give me. Air Force covered that last week
with a thirty one point win. And you know p J.
Fleck is piste off. He does not like his former
offensive coordinator and so it's definitely gonna be in. They'll

(48:26):
be familiarity with his former o C being Okay, so
Colorado Minnesota beat New Mexico State zero and then Western
Illinois sixty two to ten by eight points is a lot. Bro,
get m give me Colorado, all right. I am not

(48:58):
making the same mistake two weeks in a row. Take
Minnesota now, I'm getting ready to make the mistake that
you may f that. Give me Minnesota too, even he's
say it out loud. Forget the amount of points you
have to say out loud. I'm betting on Colorado. Thing
to get out of your mouth exactly, all right, B

(49:20):
y U at Notre Dame, Oh Lord, have mercy, all right,
B y U and Eugene at Oregon at the at
the at the house, rice are built. Hey, you forgot

(49:42):
to say at Pack twelve champion, b Yu, because didn't
they go five and oh or something like that? Agos twelve?
This is a Oregan is actually favored in this game? Yes?
Why what? What do you think this is? Man? What
do you think this is? Give me the Ducks. I

(50:05):
would take the Ducks at ten ass whooping time? Bro
and boys? Mad mad? I Uh? They just finished beating
top ten Baylor in double overtime. Jared Hall is a
really really fun quarterback to watch. This is gonna be

(50:26):
an interesting matchup. I don't think b y U is
in any way intimidated. Um, I don't think they're the
best team in the world. And they'll be getting I
believe they'll be getting their two best receivers back, Pokakua Romney.
Only one of them is back. They believe that Pooka

(50:48):
will be back apparently, but no. M hmm. Man. I
want to say I want to go with my heart
here and I want to say Oregon. But I'm I'm
very excited for this game. This is this is the
game of the week to me in the conference, just

(51:09):
because it's b YU has had so much success in
fact twelve, they're gonna be moving to the Big twelve. Um, yeah,
this is gonna be interesting game. I'm gonna go. I'm
gonna ride with Oregon, though I say it's a one
touchdown maybe like a maybe like at seven Oregon win.
Mm hmmm. Um, Now I am going to go with

(51:34):
thirty one. Go with thirty one one Oregon wand so yeah,
give them, give me the Ducks. Easy work, easy work,
all right? Uh? Next game, um, Colorado State at Washington State.
This is fascinating matchup Washington State. Washington State's favored by

(51:59):
seventeen Um, I believe Colorado State is the GENL and
the air raid right, Yes, yep, yeah, this is gonna
be This is gonna be interesting because they they got
a lot of transfer players in. I think they'll be
ready to go. This was the one place where you figured, like, yeah,

(52:21):
that'd be a really good place for cam war to
go if he didn't have his head coach. Come over
and be at Washington State's offensive coordinator, you know, going
to play in the air raid for for for Norvell
probably would have in best choice. But I think they've
actually brought their quarterback over from Nevada. Uh, this is
Washington State minus seventeen. Give me the Rams all day.

(52:41):
I think this is gonna be a really close game.
I really do. I'm not saying win, but I think
this is gonna be a very good matchup. We are
in lockstep, my friend, we are in absolute locks lock
step on this. Give me Colorado State. I think that
they make this game tough on Washington State. That yeah, yeah, yeah,

(53:01):
I think that this is gonna be one of the
more intriguing Matt matchups. Is sixty one degrees and pull
them in. Weather won't be a factor, so yeah, yeah,
and they did. I mean they they They've gotten Jack
stumped in their first two matchups. Colorados love it big
time in middle Tennessee State was one of the teams

(53:21):
that did it to him. But I think that I
think by game three they'll have it figured out a
little bit. And Washington State, to me, is not the
type of like they haven't shown to me yet that
they're the type of yeah that they can stretch it
out on you. Good. Yeah. So seventeen points, I mean,
maybe four teen to me, but I think Washington State wins.

(53:42):
But I do like Colorado State to cover the spread.
Me too, Me too. Fox Sports Radio has the best

Al Right, next game up, uh, the biggest game of

(54:04):
the whole weekend, really, which is Michigan State at Washington
You have Mel Tucker coming back to the Pack twelve
playing against you Dubbed. You Dubbed gets their first test
with Michael Pinnox Jr. As their quarterback and Kevin Dubers
their coach. Because they have only played Kent State in

(54:24):
Portland State, which they demolished both teams. What does the
line say and where are you at Believe it or not?
Washington is a three and a half point favorite over
number eleven Michigan State. UM. Kind of a kind of
a shock to me. Um. Even odds would have made

(54:47):
more sense. But to say that, to say that on
a neutral field that Washington would be the favorite, UM
is crazy. And then to make it, you know, three
and a half points for this being in Seattle, it's
gonna be a fun environment. It's gonna be a purple out. UM.
I don't see that mattering to Michigan State. You know
they play in hostile environments all the time. The thing
I'm looking forward to, though, is this is the return

(55:10):
of Jared Broussard to the pack twelve. He is uh
the number two running back out there at Michigan State,
but they give him the rock a lot fifteen carries
last week and to two touchdowns, and so really really
interested to see how Broussard looks. UM, big fan of
his rooting for him to have a lot of success.
But this Washington offense has has looked awesome. I don't

(55:31):
I because my my gut instinct was just bewilderment that
Washington was a favorite. So I'm gonna roll with with
Michigan State here and and the points. But I'm just
hoping for a really really good game. Um, it's got
a nice time slot. I think a lot of people
will tune in. You get to see RG three on
the broadcast. Um, hopefully the weather is nice and and uh,

(55:54):
I think that they can be very very intriguing. The
pack twelve needs one of the these big matchups. They
they got to either get Notre Dame at Notre Dame,
they gotta beat b y U, or they got a
knock off. Michigan State can't go over three in those games. No, no, no,
because if you go over three in those games, that's
a disaster. All right, Uh, you're going with Washington. I

(56:19):
am not. I'm going with Michigan State. I'm going with
Michigan State plus three and a half to being a
hater or on logic, no, no, on on on logic,
Like I believe Washington is where they need to be
as soon as I see it. Like I do think
that there's a possibility, that a very real possibility that
they win this game. They just haven't played anybody yet

(56:40):
for for me to fully believe. Now, next game up
Montana State at Oregon State. Where do you live on that?
For this? There's no line for this? So I said
that we should give Oregon State seventeen and a half?
Do you feel okay? Oh? Should I think should be more?

(57:02):
Probably twenty four? Did you want to set it at that?
Seems very because there's a reason why there's not a
line on this game. Yeah, we're talking about a top
five FCS team that I believe went to the championship
last year. Okay, UM and North Dakota State, Uh, twenty

(57:25):
four points? M hmm, I'll take it. I'll take Oregon
State and the and the points I am oh and
two in Oregon State games so far this year, so
I look forward to going on in three. Um. But
the other two times was me betting against them. Uh,
I mean both the Fresno State game and Boise State,

(57:47):
and not just against them, but to lose. I thought
they're gonna lose both those games. So I'm gonna ride
with the Beats. So the first time this year, all right,
I am going to go with the Beavers as well.
I think that they are that they are a good
football team. I think that they are continuing to get better,

(58:07):
that they're gonna win this game and they're going to
do something really good. That Yeah, I like it. I
like it. So yeah, give me the b bas al. Right,
next game up? Uh, San Diego State at Utah. What
is the line on this game? And is Braxton Burmeister

(58:27):
still the quarterback? I believe that he is. This is
Utah in Salt Lake City. Uh, let's see San Diego State. Actually,
they played Idaho State, probably one of the worst teams
in all of FCS. They won thirty seven last week
and your boy Braxton and Burmeister went fifteen hundred and

(58:53):
eight yards against an FCS team. Yeah, yeah, No, this
gonna be Southern Utah Part two. Uh, Utah has piste off. Um.
After losing the Florida they had to hang out in
the airport for like thirty six hours and they took
that out on Southern Utah and San Diego State obviously
has shown that they're vulnerable. They got beat pretty bad

(59:15):
by Arizona and they have to go to Salt Lake City. Um.
I don't think this looks very good for them. And
again I can't I can't bet on Brex and burmister,
so I'll roll with you, utah min yep I am.
It's a rod It's a Rod Gilmore game. So so
there will be some controversy too. All right, we have

(59:37):
Fresno State at u s C. Intriguing matchup, very intriguing.
Jeff Tetford back trying to harass USC with Lincoln Riley.
Where are you at? Well, Fresno is not getting as

(59:58):
much respect as you would as you would think. Um
to me this this should not be a closer line
than what USC had against Stanford, or it should not
be a bigger line than what USC had against Stanford,
which ended up being at nine and a half. This
is twelve and a half in favor of of USC.

(01:00:19):
The over under seventy three and a half. That's wild. Um,
I I'm not saying. I'm not saying Fresno say it's
gonna win the game. But again, like we have seen
enough of one particular quarterback this what is that this

(01:00:39):
is gonna be the game where he screws up? No,
it's not because that doesn't happen. Because that doesn't happen.
Do you think they have the ability to get to him?
Do you think that. Do you think that they have
the ability to make him uncomfortable. He doesn't really get uncomfortable.
If Fresno's it is going to score points, it's just

(01:01:02):
a matter of if their defense can hold up enough
to give them a fighting chance to win. Yeah. Yeah,
this is a late game. This is uh, um, this
is This game is gonna be on at ten thirty
my time. But I guarantee you I'll be up for
it because the other two games that are are playing

(01:01:22):
concurrently um with this one are are definitely not as exciting.
And again, this is the last time that we'll have
to deal with Jake Hayner unless somebody matches up in
a bowl game or something like that. So Jake Hayner's
packed twelve curtain call. I will take Fresno State to
cover the twelve and a half. All right, Eastern Michigan

(01:01:43):
at Arizona State, this should be a blood bath. Yes,
it should be. Eastern Michigan's not terrible. Um, but they're
also you know, they gotta go to Tempe, they gotta
play late at night. I don't this is gonna be
like midnight kickoff their time. I don't think. Um, you know,

(01:02:07):
Arizona State's favored by twenty and a half, and it
would be it would be really difficult for me to
outside of her edwards like interfering. So you're taking Arizona State, Yeah,
all yeah, I think it's gonna not me, buddy. I
am going with Eastern Washington, even though because I think

(01:02:31):
that they're going to cover. I think that I believe
that Michigan of that Arizona State is gonna win the
game like pretty easily, but that that the herm is
gonna muck up the spread. All right, Well they did.
They just took a thirty five point loss at Louisiana
Billion Napiers old team. So BILLI Napiers other old team

(01:02:54):
I think is going to do the exact same thing
to them. All right, last thing up you have of
um last game up? You have North Dakota State, who
is two and oh at Arizona they beat They beat
the hell out of Drake and North Carolina A and T. Like,
they've given up seventeen points in two games and have

(01:03:14):
scored basically a hundred points. They've scored ninety nine points
and have given up seventeen. What's the line process on
this cast? I'm excited for for him to see some
North Dakota State uh football. There is no line. There's
no line. So you and I talked beforehand and I said,
what about North Dakota State minus nine and a half
and you you said you didn't think that was enough

(01:03:37):
to give an FCS team nine and a half points
for a back twelve team. Actually, where would you put it?
I actually think that not not in a half feels
that feels are good, and it should probably be like
twelve and a half, but not nine and a half
feels very very good. Um, who is the better team?

(01:04:01):
Arizona is more talented, but North Dakota State really believe that? Yes?
