the day when sports talk radio really got going, there
were shows that were called game time reacting. In many ways,
all sports talk radio shows were game time react. You
were reacting to the game. Uh. I did some of
(00:43):
that back in the nineties too, But I I kind
of carved out my own niche for lack of a
better word, from the standpoint and rather sign on, have
a blank canvas and through the power of story, give
what I believe to be pertinent information content and back
it up with relevant specifics and accurate information and personal experience.
(01:07):
Is I've been been around the block once or twice,
and tonight, you know we're gonna actually do a little
game time react because we're gonna be reacting to this
thing called the Super Bowl Extravaganza. Later on the show
will be reacting to Carry Irving's comments, Tom Brady's decision,
the Lebron situation, and much much more. It's part of
(01:27):
the reason I'm using the word react is because I
have to be honest. I am doing the show tonight
with a heavy heart. Four hours prior to the show,
I did last on Saturday, January, the night before the
NFC and ac Conference Championship Games, I was informed that
(01:51):
my mother had been diagnosed with liver cancer. Now we
had a plan, some of the best doctors in the
world Saddleback Memorial. My mother lives in southern California. I
live in Las Vegas, and it was onward and up
where she had a very good attitude. This past weekend,
I had a pre planned family function. I had family
(02:11):
in Michigan. And while I was in Michigan enjoying my weekend,
I got a call from my sister Sunday night. She said, uh,
burning mom's mom was sleeping twenty hours a day and
she's turning yellow. I didn't wait. I got on a
plane first thing Monday morning, flew back to Las Vegas,
got in a car, drove straight to southern California, and
(02:34):
fortunately we're able to see my mom now what had happened.
And I was warned the toxins in the liver, uh,
really start to infiltrate the body because it's a pretty
pretty aggressive cancer. And even though we had a plan
and things look good, we hoped there was a turn.
And fortunately Monday I was able to get there in
(02:56):
time and have a conversation. She was about seventy percent
that there. I would say I went back Tuesday morning
to you know, believing that I would have one more conversation,
and frankly she was not there anymore. That the disease
had ravaged her in nine days. And this is a
very accomplished woman, eighty six years old, decorated law enforcement,
(03:17):
wrote three books, very vibrant. Two weeks ago. You'd never
have seen this coming now she because she buttons everything
up and dots her eyes and crosses her teeth like
nobody've ever seen. She took care of everything. Her wishes
were to be cremated her. Uh, this is all spelled
out in the trust her. You know, she did not
(03:37):
want to be resuscitated. She wanted to live a normal life,
not just be kept alive. So these were tough conversations
we had Monday night. Well, Tuesday, life happened fast. She
was nonresponsive. I couldn't really talk to her. So our
work had been done the family, you know, my we
and I drove back to Vegas and I got the call,
(03:57):
uh Wednesday morning at am Pacific that my mother had passed.
Now why am I sharing this with you? Because you've
heard me preach about a thousand times in life, Uh,
and certainly in sports and certainly in business, but especially
in life, it's not what happens to you, it's how
you react. In fact, I've said often that life is
(04:19):
about nine check that ten percent of what happens and
of how you react. So I lose my mother eighty
six years old, Uh, in the last forty hours. I
was determined to sign on, do this show, and onward
and upward. So how do I react? So here's my
chance to show you. And I know I'm speaking to
(04:39):
a lot of folks out there, and you've lost loved
ones too, So I'm not trying to say I'm anything special.
This is this is how life works. We know that
we know the rules going in. How do I choose
to react. It's very simple. I choose to cut my blessings.
You'll get no complaints out of me. Was it brutal
to watch your mother die in front of your eyes
for a twelve hours? Yeah? It was? Uh, but I
(05:05):
choose to say, well, she had eighty six good years,
She got to do a lot, lived a very full life.
And you know, however we exit this planet, you're never
gonna like it. I mean, if if if she had
died in her sleep two months ago and I've had
a chance to say goodbye, would that be better? And
she was hanging on for dear laugh the next day,
months suffering, would that have been better? No? Again, I
(05:26):
choose to react by conning my blessings. Part of those
blessings would be, you know, the ability, the opportunity, the privilege,
thanks to Scott Shapiro, to do a radio show like this,
and I am all in. So how do we react.
Let's have a kick ass show tonight. Let's go get him.
There's a little game on Sunday, and uh, I guess
(05:48):
you could call it the big game. I called it
the little game. I guess in the grand scheme of life,
it is a little game. But no it's a big
game and we're all gonna be watching, and there are
so many thoughts we have tonight. I'd be between tonight
showing tomorrow, and I am telling you I've got an
NFL Super Bowl extravaganza corner COPI of information that will
knock your socks off. And by the way, we have
(06:09):
Steve Pezik here in about ten minutes for the Phasic five,
and we're gonna cover some other things too. We've got
Mark mndin at midnight for the Midnight Magic. But I
want to start with just some basic thoughts and I
will give them some, you know, very definitive opinions about
the about the game. And I'm gonna give you what
I think are are four very you know what I
(06:30):
would consider to be profits that make sense. A matter
of fact, I'll take I'll give you one right out
of the gate. This might be my I have a
good profit for either team, a really good profit. Um.
And you know I'm not a profet guy, but these
jumped at me. And just like the brock Purty under
two twenty one yards jumped at me two weeks ago,
Travis Kelsey over nine and a half targets, it's targets. Now,
(06:53):
remember he averaged Kelsey average nine and a half targets
per game just in the regular season, had seven team
targets against the Jaguars. There were ten times this year
he had more than eight targets just in a regular
season game. Now, when you look at a guy like
Travis Kelsey and imports to that Kansas City offense, and
you realize when an elite tight end he is in
(07:13):
the NFL, and it's a short list. You can count
on a wood shop teacher's hand how many great tight
ends around in the NFL. So I believe Kelsey would
be targeted early to set a tone. I believe we'll
be targeted on third downs. I believe we'd be targeted
in the red zone. She should get to the red
zone three or four times. I bet you'll be targeted
twice each trip to the red zone. So I like
Travis Kelsey over nine and a half targets. I'll have
(07:35):
one for the Eagles as well some other common bets. Well,
why not go right out of the gate and give
you a quick one. But how evenly are these two
teams matched. Well, let's see, the Chiefs won sixty and
three this year, uh and Eagles won sixty three this year.
The Chiefs scored five D forty six points this year
and the Eagles scored five D forty six points this year.
(07:57):
The Chiefs of the a f c's number one seed,
the Eagles are the NFC's number one seed. Both teams
feature six all pros on their roster, including a Kelsey brother.
But when you handicap, you look for strength through weakness,
and you look for an edge. And I believe one
of the edges here is Philly's defense. Philly, here's the difference.
(08:19):
Philly allowed fifty one points less on the year than
the Eagles did. Philly allowed the Chiefs allowed four or nine?
What else jumps at me? Right out of the gate?
On defense? All year, Kansas City has featured a four
man front, two linebackers, and a heavy nickel. Now, how
does that not play into the hands of Philadelphia's rushing attack,
(08:41):
who just rushed for four touchdowns against the number one
rushed defense in the National Football League. Plus Kansas City
ranks thirty one and red zone defense. Well, that's just
two of the many reasons I'll be getting too later
to night as to why I believe the Eagles will
prevail in the Super Bowl. By the way Monday rolls around,
I don't hide. We can have a little fun on
(09:01):
Twitter area if you want me, maybe even next weekend
when I sound that shows. But I do like Philly
and I'm gonna get to a lot more. Meanwhile, Patrick
Maholmes finds himself in the rare situation of being an
underdog in a football game. Now. The Chiefs or underdogs
early in the NC Championship game against Cincinnati, but they
closed his favorites and Patrick Mahomes has had thirteen playoffs
(09:21):
starts prior to this game without being an underdog. It's
the longest streak by any quarterback to begin their career
in the Super Bowl area. It's also one shot off
Peyton Manning's record in this band. It would also snap
the Chiefs fifteen games streak of being postseason favorites should
the Chiefs close as an underdog, and that's only one
and a half. This game is really basically a pick him.
(09:43):
We're splitting hairs here, but nonetheless, for the record, he's
an underdog. It's also just the eleventh time and Patrick
mahomes career that he's been an underdog and the first
time in the playoffs. So no quarterback of the Super
Bowl era has made more starts to begin his career.
His tenth career game as an underdog, this is his
(10:04):
career start. Just a little grist for the mill there.
That's how evenly matched these teams are. But I believe games.
I wanted the line of scrimmage, and that's where I
believe Philly will win this game. And you know how
much I like Patrick Mahomes and respect Patrick Mahomes, I
have oftentimes on the show said I believe currently he
is the best player in the National Football League. And
(10:29):
Pat and and if if Kansas City ends up winning,
it will be because somewhere along the line, in an
opportune time, Mahomes, maybe once or twice or more, will
have pull. Is what I call Jurassic Park routine. You
see the movie Jurassic Park, or that older gentleman and
the young lady are being chased by a vellash raptor
and they hide in a kitchen somewhere and they slammed
(10:51):
the kitchen door like this giant wide door and the
handle and they're looking down at each other and they said, well,
you know, he's Donnas stores are smart, but I don't
think they can open a door handle. Precisely that moment
they looked down and the door handles turning from the
other side. How the raptor did that, I don't know.
We'll have to ask the Steven Spielberg. I guess that
(11:12):
reminds me of my homes, so at any given time
something crazy could happen. But if I'm being honest, which
I am always on the show, in in eight Super
Bowl quarters, seven of the eight my home statistically, he
has not been great. A matter of fact, he's only
throwing for north or fifty percent completion percentage in one
of those eight quarters. And that's kind of one of
(11:34):
those Yogi Bearras stats. You know what the Yogi Bearras
stat is, right. Yogi once went four for four against
the Boston Red Sox, and the next day in the
New York Times the box scores had Yogi three for four.
He got mad, called the editor said what are you doing?
What are you doing? Man? I went four for four yesterday.
Don't worry. Yogi was a typer graphical areas. What do
you mean? It was a clean single up the middle,
(11:56):
So be careful. How many stats we threw around. I
trust my eyes to tell me a lot. I break
down film a little differently, I think, And when I
look at this game, I think Philly and all three
phases is quite a bit stronger. I'm not saying they're
gonna do to Kansas City what Tampa Bay did two
years ago. When I think of games like this, it
looked obvious one way, New York Giants versus the Denver
(12:18):
to Broncos. And and and he said, there's been a few.
So there you have it. Let's have a great show.
It's a blessing for me to be here, and I'm
gonna make the most of it. Football fans, be sure

(13:25):
of course you know this guy. I love this guy
a candley without him. Get your pens and pencils ready
for a Super Bowl extravagance to Who better to have
than Steve Fenzik and the Phasic five is now It's
the Physick Five. These are the five things you need
to hear about. No, we're the only back to back
(13:49):
Hilton Super Contest winner Steve Fessick. Here's Bernie Fratto. Well,
fez uh. In the five years we've been doing this,
one theme has been Conston. I don't think there's anybody
better than you acquiring the market. And we call closing
line value. You know, when you get out in a
game and not to get on a game. You seem
(14:10):
to have a beat on where the line will close
at kickoff. And we both know that in the last
eleven days, twelve days, this line's bounced around, you know,
like don Knots and Mr Chicken for crown out loud.
So what does this close? I as I I saw
it go from two to one and a half today
(14:30):
or depending where you shop, you know, Philly minus one,
Philly minus one and a half. It's all over the plates.
But I don't think. I don't think it's gonna venture
back toward two or two and a half. I think
it's gonna be Kansas any money, my opinion, What are
your thoughts your spot on I agree with you. I
think Chiefs money is coming. The one exception might be
(14:50):
the East coast. There's a regional bias here. So if
you are on the East Coast and you have an
independent book example Delaware Downs for instance, you could to
well see the highest number on the Eagles, but on
the West coast, which I considered Nevada to be. I
think if you're gonna bet the Chiefs. You really should
have bet them already. I think you could have gotten
(15:11):
plus two today earlier. That's gone. You can get plus
one and a plus one oh five. That's at the
South Point here in Nevada. They do a tremendous job there.
They're open twenty four hours. You's had to ask for
the months one oh five and they will give it
to you with a special betting number. I think that's
as good as it gets. Bernie, Uh fast your spot on.
So I hope the folks heard that. If you liked
(15:33):
Kansas City, you should have already gotten on them. If
you like Philadelphia, Hell, you may want to wait, but
I full disclose your Fest. I didn't play around when
that line opened up eleven days ago. I've been filling
on the money line and I'll just ride with it.
Let's dive right in fest. We've got a lot too
good to including your famous props and how well you
do at this every year. Let's have a little fun.
(15:53):
I'm usually off on this. I'm gonna I'm gonna guess
well before the game kicks off. Feel bet about seventy
Is that about right? I've got about forty right now,
And it all depends how much the public moves numbers.
And I just counted as bets and as an example, UM,
right now the Eagles, the best number of the Eagles
is minus one sixteen money line at the South Point.
(16:13):
Get this, Bernie, your best numbers at the same book
in Las Vegas. And that's because the South Point is
doing what's called a dime line with reduced juice on
the money line. I think if you wait it out,
I want to ask you this, Bernie, I think you're
going to see one at least one book go to
minus one ten on Sunday morning on the Eagles. I
think I think that's it will actually get that good.
Do you think I'm correct there? No, I think you're
(16:34):
a million percent correct. And that's all. Remind everybody whatever betting,
whatever handle has come in so far, I'm estimating at
least the remaining seventy will start to come in tomorrow.
So very little has been really been on the game.
And you consider the total handles, that fair. That is fair.
And by the way, UM, in case anyone thinks I'm
(16:54):
playing favorites, I'm far from betting at the south Point,
So I believe me. I am not like king to like,
I'm not getting paid by this outpoint to endorse them.
They don't even let me play. But they're doing a
tremendous job doing not just the dime line on the
sides must one five in each direction, but on the
money line as well. So I wouldn't make the case
as this is controversial, Like you hear all these sports
(17:16):
book managers in Vegas saying, Oh, we're getting really sharp
money on Kansas City or really sharp money on the Eagles, Bernie,
It's simply not true. If you're betting ten thous dollars
or less, the only place you would go is to
bet the South Point because, like I said, they have
the very best number on both Kansas City and Philly.
You would never make a five figure wager anywhere but
(17:37):
the South Point right now, Yeah, no, this is all.
This is the reason why you're professional. Again, even if
you're not a professional, better you can think like professional
and please do announce Fest will take a well deserve
week off. Next week, We're going to continue on through
March Manness with the Physic five because the incredible popularity.
All right, let's dive right in, Fez tell the Great Unwashed,
(17:58):
and I don't mean that. Tell the great full out
there hot a bed, take them right down the line.
Kansas City, Philly overs unders the optimal way to manage
your risk and have a little fun for this thing
we call the super Bowl. All right, Kansas City, you're
betting right now plus one an aff hopefully can get
mass one oh five. If not, just take the plus
one half. Don't fall into the trap of saying, oh,
(18:18):
I'll play the money line because I'm gonna get a
higher payout. While that used to be true, it used
to be you'd be able to get a much higher payout.
And you know what, if you can get plus a
dollar keen, that's actually better than plus one half. It's close,
but plus a dollar ten is really hard to find.
If you're comparing plus one oh five versus getting plus
one half lay a dollar ten, I would take the
one half. And here's why, Bernie, the new overtime rules
(18:41):
for the playoffs. They're gonna make the game. More games
are gonna land one eventually. And here's why. If the
game goes over time, the team that takes the ball,
if they score touchdown, I assure you they will kick
the extra point. I'm not going to go into details
of why that's correct. It is the other team when
they score their touchdown back, they will go for two
free time. Well for everyone with the details on why
(19:03):
it's just the correct thing to do, a sharp fifth
grader that spends twenty minutes studying it will come to
the same conclusion. And I am pretty sure an NFL
team will be as sharp as a sharp fifth grader
and then go for two because if you kick the
extra point, the other team gets the ball in sudden
death over time, and you're gonna lose the game six
of the time. So where I'm going here is that
(19:23):
the the the playoff games have more of a chance
of landing exactly one, and that's just enough. Make sure
you get plus one and a half. Had to bring
up the fifth grade. Three toughest years of my life,
all right, says on the Philly thoughts about silly, how
would you bet that that team? So what happens, and
this happens in every Super Bowl. The public does the
(19:44):
opposite of what you just said. They everyone bet in
Kansas City will bet Kansas City on the money line,
so you will get a bargain on Philly. On the
money line in the other direction, it's already minus one
six team at the south point. Like I said, it
would not surprise me if you don't see a go
all the way down bed Philly Sunday morning minus a
dollar ten. I don't think you're gonna have to lay
(20:05):
any points. I don't think you have to lay any
extra big if you wait it out. I can't be sure.
It does depend on injury reports. That suddenly Juju Smith
Schuster falls out his his balcony and he's inactive for
the game. Yes, that can change the spread. But if
everyone's active, all the wide receivers and they continue to
tread upwards for Kansas City, I think this is going
(20:25):
to You're going to get at least a few books
that go to pick all right. So it's one of
the things I haven't done at all is touch the
totals first half, second half, any of the quarters. Certainly
game uh and I have my reasons for that. But
do you have thoughts on totals betting? Yeah, so this
is a little controversial. I don't think you should bet
(20:46):
under on this game because there are so many better
ways to skin the cat if you will. Um. I
was just at Caesar's Palace. By the way, I'm a
huge believer. Come to Vegas on your bucket list for
March Madness, the four days, the first week in the
March maddest, bestest thing ever. I think the Super Bowl
is a little bit overrated because it's such a big
build up that there's only one game. But still being
(21:08):
in Vegas during the Super Bowl is cool. And I
do have a room at Caesar's Palace right now. Bernie
got some friends in town that are staying there, and
the buzz is tremendous there when I'm at the sports book,
and I was at five of them today. You know,
many times I heard anyone bet on an under zero.
All I heard was on everything public is hitting down
(21:29):
and they're betting over. And because of that, you know,
if you waited out, you're gonna find bargains. If you
look around and you know what the market should be
on the first half, under the second half, under the
first quarter, under team totals, under player totals, under the
you're gonna have a portfolio chock full of unders, including
(21:50):
like Mahomes right now is past yards. He's probably gonna
close three or five. Kelsey's probably gonna close up from
an opener of seventies, seventies probably going all the way.
Eighty five Sanders is probably going up to sixty three
rush yards. You see where I'm going. If you're really
if you're really serious about betting, you're gonna have so
many rogue unders that you're gonna be playing anyways, Why
(22:11):
in the world are you just gonna tripled down and
bet the game under on top of it? And if
you get a Philly special Super Bowl with seventy eight points,
you're just gonna get your teeth kicked in. I have
always said the Super Bowl extravaganza with respect to betting
here in Las Vegas is beyond description. Quick example Wednesday,
a better at super Book, the Super the super Book
(22:33):
over at the at the west Gate, Jake Cornegie place
to one dollar bet on Jalen Hurts to throw exactly
five touchdown passes in the Super Bowl. He got sixty
one odds. That's not betting. That is shooting babies at
the moon. Maybe he'll be right, Faz, Hang right there,
Palm in a second here we're gonna talk about some
(22:53):
props that makes sense in my opinion. We don't want
to get your props and I want you to grade
two or three props that I have fired on the first.
Let's go to our guy, Kevin Wired and my condolences
to you, Bernie. I I wish the best for you
and your family and know it can be a difficult time,
but happy to have you here tonight, I doing this show.
New Mexico State University has announced Saturday this suspending it
(23:16):
spend's basketball program due to what they merely referred to
as quote new allegations within the program. Stadium Is, however,
reporting that it stems from an investigation of multiple players
repeatedly hazing a teammate. The school has said that recent
allegations prompted the investigation has led to the coaching staffing
placed on paid administrative lead. Significant concerns over Gary Payton.
(23:38):
The second's physical exam with the Golden State Warriors has
put Thursday's four team trade involving the Warriors, Pistons, Hawks,
and trail Plazers in jeopardy. That's according to a report
from ESPN. It goes on to state that the Warriors
have until Saturday to go through with the deal. Oorver
send the entire trade, no amendments, to the deal can
be made due to the passing of Thursday's trade deadline.
(23:59):
Cleveland Brown's owner Jim and Jimmy and Dee Haslem are
in talks to buy a roughly stake in the Milwaukee
Bucks from Mark Lassary. At some white scores from out West,
the Bucks beat the Clippers one nineteen and one oh six,
as Janic's had thirty five points. Mavericks beat the Kings
four team that won both of the games. That's acquiring
Kyrie Irving. He led the way with points and ten rebounds.
(24:20):
Thunder beat the Trailblazers to nine. Back over to you
burning all right, thanks Kevin, gonna have you back tonight, buddy.
All right. Back to Steve Pezik and the Physick five Fez.
Let's get into your wheelhouse. Nobody is better on props
and understanding the philosophy behind props. And let's also not
forget before we start, give some people your basic rules
(24:43):
on the dudes, and don't se betting props fists. Yeah,
so avoid the needle in the haystack bets. Vegas has
one thirty of the last thirty two Super Bowls. Bold
prediction they will never lose another Super Bowl, And the
reason being is that the dastardly book he hides all
this extra vigorous in these needle in the haystack props.
What do we mean by needle in a haystack where
(25:04):
there's about a hundred different outcomes and only one of
them can win. Examples the exact number of points that
you're going to see the Chiefs score, the exact final score,
who's going to score, the first touchdown, the last touchdown,
the middle touchdown, the fourth touchdown, et cetera. Exactly how
many yards will the first touchdown be? Uh. These are
the sort of bets that God couldn't win on, not
(25:24):
because they don't have a forecasting model that's better than
what an unbiased estimate is. It's just because there's too
much vague in the underlying marketplace. So in general, avoid those.
You want to play stuff that there's two things you
can bet on. Something goes over or it goes under,
like a quarterbacks passing yards. You want something whether there's
a yes or a no. So you brought up the example.
(25:45):
You don't want to bet Jalen Hurts to have exactly
five touchdown passes. You want to bet over under if
you if you're bullish on them to throw touchdowns, just
play the over one and a half and play the
prop that way. You mentioned the super books are the
books in general? Only twice in the Super Bowl history
of Nevada sports books suffered a net loss when the
Giants beat New England seventeen to fourteen to break up
(26:08):
there there undefeated season. And then back when the when
the Forts molly wapped. As our gut Kevin Figures would say,
the San Diego charges all right, says, give a couple
of props you like, and I want to give a
couple of of like, and I want you to greet him. Sure,
I'll give two of them. And we're getting to it
a little bit late. But I just I can't see
game script that this isn't going to be a solid wager.
(26:29):
Number of catches by Kelsey. I get it, he may
not be going downfield much, but it's still at six
and a half the over six and a half minus
one fifty. I really think it's a solid wager. He's
absolutely the go to guy. The rest of the receiving
corps is a little bit banged up, and bottom line
is I think Mahomes is going to go to him
in Philly is a team that prevents the deep pass,
(26:51):
and so dinking and dunking to Kelsey, so not yardage.
I want to play him over six and a half
receptions miss one fifty. Maybe Bernie, you can grade me
on my prop A plus. There's a matter of fact,
at the top of the show, I gave a teaser
one of my props. I fired, honest Travis Kelsey over
nine and a half targets. Now he was targeted seventeen
times against the Jaguars average nine point eight per game.
(27:14):
And I said at the top of the show, we
no one leap tight end. He is right. You can
count on a wood shop teacher's hand how many great
tight ends are in the NFL. They are very much
gonna need to lean on Kelsey, especially in the red zone,
don't you agree as I do? And I'm so happy
that he said you gave out a teaser, And I
thought you were going to say you gave out you
that you tease the side with the total in the
Super Bowl. Of course I would immediately end. For those
(27:38):
are not familiar with me, um, just read Stanford Wong's
book on sharp sports spetting and they'll explain how incredibly
stupid it is to tease NFL totals and how no
one wins actually playing that. And there's a lot of
pros and experts to give out, like their super Bowl
teaser on the side and the total, and yes, the
Kansas City tease from one half to seven half is excellent,
(27:59):
but you have nothing to share it with because you
have to play the total. And just at some point, yeah,
I get frustrated because I'm like, it's just if you
took a hundred m i T students that all bet
sports for living and asked every one of them, is
this a good play? All one hund would say, of
course not, it's terrible. So you're not right, and there
and and a hundred m I T experts are not wrong.
(28:22):
You're wrong, and they're right. Don't tease the total in
the super Bowl. Don't give the greedy bookie your money.
Come on. I I may have much mouthed. What I
was trying to say was I took the prop on
the Travis Kelsey over nine and a half targets. No,
you did. You said it correctly, Bernie, you did great.
I was just being silly when you said teas. Oh, yeah, well,
(28:44):
I tease it at to being in the show. So
you know, it's like the Cannaby Awards. If they gave
the five major awards the first five minutes of the show,
Best Picture, Best Actor, Best supporting all that, how many
people you think would stay tuned in? Right, Well, I don't.
I gotta give a little teaseier. That was my number one.
All right, let me have you grade another one of mine.
Let's give another one of years. I love this one
even more than the Travis Kelsey prop. Kenneth Gainwell over
(29:08):
ten and a half receiving yards. Kansas City ranks thirty
one versus running backs, allowing catches and yards per game
on the aggregate during the year, the Chiefs allowed from
running backs on opposing teams and the average of six
catches and forty six yards per game. By the way,
Kenneth Gainwell had the same total ten and a half
(29:29):
receiving yards against San Francisco. He went over by the
star of the second quarter. Your thoughts, I'm a little
torn on Gainwell and hopefully my reception still okay, Solow choppy.
He looks so good, Bernie, but Sanders got very little
usage in the fourth quarter. Because it was a low
well win, but I love the way gamewell. Well, okay,
let's go to you. What props you like. Let's go
(29:53):
no score first five minutes thirty seconds minus one sixty.
This is available at the south Point. I just saw it.
I think both teams will be conservative with ball control early.
That's what teams do in the Super Bowl. Even if
they score in the first drive, there's a good chance
that they're going to chew more than six minutes o'clock.
No score first five minute thirty seconds. All right, Now,
(30:13):
this is not a prop I'm going to fire on,
but I'd like you to grade it over ten and
a half. Accepted penalties minus one ten. Here's why. The
chief official, Carl Schefflers, has called eleven or more penalties
and eighty percent of the games he's officiating his entire career.
So I think the Brooks are pricingness in relation to
the average number of penalties he's called he's called, versus
(30:36):
his tendency to call a lot of penalties heading into
this game. Your thoughts, it's a really low number on penalties.
Normally you see thirteen and a half, but Super Bowls
historically have had much fewer yellow canaries flying. It's a
point of emphasis that the league says to the referees
to not call penalties and not getting the way of
the game. Because of that, you know basic strategies to
(30:58):
play penalties act we go under. But that's back when
penalties are like twelve and thirteen at ten and a half,
I got no dog in the fight. I'm indifferent your
but your research is very good about the officiating. Proof
like me, to throw flag that offsets a lot of
what I did says something has happened. I'm not sure
if we've had another snowstorm in Vegas. So let's close
it with this real quickly. Give us your best bet
(31:19):
for the game. If you get only bet one bet, Wow,
the pressure is on. I will play the third quarter
to outscore the first quarter. It's Super Bowl. Just start
slow historically, so I'll take the third quarter to be
higher score. By the way, is it is it worth
it fast to take a flyer in the first half
under or no? I don't think so, because the game
(31:44):
totals at fifty and a half in the first half,
totals sitting at twenty four at most places, is just
two key of a number. If you get a twenty
four and a half, you could play under but not
under twenty four fast. Great stuff is always half so
much fun. This weekend, we'll see. In two weeks we'll
dive into our madness. I'm so sorry about your mom, Bernie.
You are the best face. It's a pleasure to know
(32:05):
you these these past twelve years, and I really appreciate
you coming on the show. Pal, thanks so much. That
is Steve Fezik, the only two time winner of the
prestigious Hilton on Westgates Super Contest. And it's great. We're
gonna continue in two weeks with with basketball as we
head through March madness. Come up the Super Bowl fifty seven,
(32:25):
A little fun by the numbers, and some trivial minutia
you can impress your friends with as you're having your
favorite beverage. Uh maybe this weekend or anytime at the bar.

bring in our guy Mark Medina for Midnight Madness, Midnight Magic,
NBA Midnight Magic. Not much happening in the NBA this week,
(33:54):
so I don't know what we're gonna talk about, but
I guess we'll figure something out, all right. As I said,
I always get a kick out of this. You know,
year by year there's always kind of crazy Super Bowl
history that we revisit. Uh, for instance, things like Believe
It or Not? And you've got to number one seeds
which I mentioned at the beginning of the show that
Believe it or not? Number one versus number two in
(34:17):
terms of the seeds. Check that number one versus number
one has only happened thirteen times in the previous forty
eight Super Bowls since the NFL implemented seeding during the
nineteen season. The first time it happened with Super Bowl eleven,
which is played after the seventies six season, And of
course that was the Raiders as a number one seed
(34:37):
versus the Minnesota Vikings is the number one seed. As
luck would have it. I was at that game at
the Rose Bowl. Raiders one thirty two to fourteen. Minnesota
had a hell of a team, Chuck for him, but
the Raiders were just too good, man, they were just
too good. That's when the Raiders were the Raiders. And
a funny side note about that game. The following Saturday,
(34:58):
Fran Tarkenton hosted Saturday Night Live, and then his opening monologue,
he said, Hi, I'm Fran Targets and quarterback of the
Minnesota Vikings. And by the way, the Vikings of the
seventies were the bomb dignity. Okay, they went to four
super Bowls. Now they didn't win any of them, but
I'm not one of those bachers. It's an iconic achievement
to get to a super Bowl, much less four in
the same decade. Fran target to know opens up as
(35:21):
monologue says, I'm Fran Tarchet and quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings.
We just lost Super Bowl eleven. That's the fourth super
Bowl we've lost this decade. And you know what, we're
going back next year and we're gonna lose again. And
it got a pretty good laugh. Fortunately, you can go
back next year. It's been a minute, but we'll see
(35:42):
what happens. Uh. But number one versus number one is
not happened a lot in terms of the seedings. Another
thing doesn't happen a lot. Are sports books in Nevada
losing money? Only twice in the history of the Super
Bowl have the Nevada sports books suffered a net loss. Now,
(36:03):
if you listen to our guy, Steve Zik the Guru, Look,
I don't think it will ever happen again because there's
given all the prop bets in game betting, all the
things that caused people to bet more than they should
in terms of the handle, and probably in terms of
the number of bets, etcetera, etcetera. It's all stacked in
the book's favor. Make no mistake. We've talked about this.
I always hate it when people say, well, Vegas says right, No,
(36:24):
Vegas is in the business of managing risk, not predicting
the future, not being a fortune teller. They manage risk,
which is what we suggest you do. Is it better?
We've talked about it many times on the show, will
continue to emphasize that. But the number of Super Bowls
and Nevada Sports books have suffered on net losses too.
In their history. The books lost a record two point
(36:44):
six million when the underdog Eli manning New York Giants
beat the New England Patriots seventeen to fourteen and Super
Bowl thirty two. That was in February a eight. Remember
that David Tyree catch on the helmet the book he's
got for about four grand. In nineteen nine five when
(37:05):
the very heavily favorite San Francisco forty niners they were
favored by twenty I remember that very well because I
bet a friend of mine, Brent Businar, lated to twenty eight,
which you should never do, ever, ever, ever. But Brent
was kind of a knuckle head and he thought he
knew it all and uh, they won twenty six and
and I haven't collected the bet yet. But that's a
(37:25):
story for a different day or or not. We don't
need to tell that story. So the forty Niners when
they beat they beat uh, the Chargers in uh and
it was it was six. So those are only two
times the sports books have ever suffered in net loss.
Here in Nevada, here's another fund with numbers eight. The
number eight, what does that signify? The number of seven
(37:50):
figure bets on last year's Super Bowl that were reported
by sports books. That's what that means is a million
dollars per per game or prebet. I know of at
least three this year. This is a different animal this year.
I think a lot a lot of guys are more
they're not as confident either way, and you're seeing a
(38:10):
lot of two way action and on the game itself.
But you'll see more profits too. And no book is
no single book. There's limits on profits. Okay, I gotta
take a million, and you have to go to all
ninety seven books, maybe you you still wouldn't probably get done.
I don't think they're the limits are they'll they'll go
up on game day, but you know you got fifteen
What does that number signifyed, that's the number of consecutive
(38:32):
playoff games the Chiefs have been the betting favorite. That favorite.
That's the longest streak intent super Bowl era twenty What
does that number signified? The number of outright upsets by
betting underdogs in the Super Bowl. By the way, two
hundred and thirty three million was the net win on
Super Bowl for Nevada books in the last thirty years.
(38:52):
Two and thirty three million. What is the number? Three
point one to billion signified. That's the amount of wager
on the Super Bowl with the VATA sports books since
the state's Gaming Control began tracking betting on the NFL
championship in record. Eight million was bet last year in
the Super Bowl within the VATA sports books nationwide. They're
(39:15):
talking American Gaming Commission is talking about um I think
about sixteen billion. That's a billion with a b bet nationwide.
That's legally I bet. It will be more when you
consider all aspects of what people do, and it's not
just a game inside and totals. You've got a bazillion ways,
(39:38):
over a thousand prop bets, and then you've got end
game uh betting as well. So there you have it.
We're just getting started, trust me on this. Uh we're
gonna switch gears. Top of the hour. Here, we've got
our man Mark Madina coming up for a little Medina Magic,
Midnight Magic. You talk about NBA craziness this week, Kevin Durant,
(39:58):
Kyrie Irring, we'll talk a out at all. Keep it

it's an incredible week in the NBA. Uh, not much happen,
so I hope we can find some things to talk about.
And yes, you know it's that time. Is that time?
Frog Guy, Mark Medina and George Sands has tweeted and
said maybe we should call this segment bed night Magic
(40:43):
not bad Mark. How you doing, buddy Bunny. I'm I'm okay.
I'm excited to talk with you, but I saw the
tough news about you, so I'm I'm wishing you well
wishes and uh, I hope you and yours can hang
in there well. Thank you very much. I greatly appreciate that,
and I greatly appreciate all the fine, wonderful people who
have been tweeting at me and offering their condolences. It
(41:04):
means a heck of a lot. Mark. Let's get down
to the matter of business, and let's start with Tuesday
night when the when the record was broken. But I
have I'm gonna come in from left field, Mark, because
I have to. My biggest takeaway from that game was,
amidst all the fanfare, the Lakers could not beat the
twelfth seed. And I don't know anybody in the country
(41:28):
other than you that can name three stars on Oklahoma
City if they had a gun to their head. That
to me is a bad look. Your thoughts just on
the Lakers in terms of their quest as their twenty
five and thirty one to try to get into the
playoffs after losing to the number twelve seed at home. Well,
first off, I'll take the challenge of name three thunder players.
(41:50):
Shake Gojis Alexander, Josh Goody, chat Holger doesn't count because
he has been hurt. Lou Dorg Sam think he was out,
So we'll go with Trey Man. So that's three. But
the question you asked, I mean, Oklahoma City has been
a team that's been very competitive. But I agree with
your larger point that you know, for Lebron to play
out of his mind and you know, get the scoring
(42:11):
record even though he needed at least thirty six points
and they still come up short, it shows that, you know,
they have some serious roster falls. Now fast forward to
Thursday's trade deadline. They did make some right moves. They
finally finally traded Russell Westbrook, and there's some addition by
subtraction because he wasn't a great fit from the next
(42:31):
is a no standpoint. Sometimes, Uh, you know, had some
contentiousness with the coaching staff and all that, um. But yeah,
not a surprise, but also they fulfilled positional needs. D'Angel
Russell has some UH awards in his game as far
as defense goes and his comfort level of playing off
(42:52):
the ball, but he's a good shooter, as his Malik
Beasley UM and so I think it's it's not a
game changer, but I think that definitely connects them to
the bridge of next off season, where it increases their
odds of making the play in tournament, maybe even sneaking
in as a sixth seed, and then having some of
the cap flexibility to either do signing trades not to
(43:13):
keep these guys, or if they do over a chief,
keep them so that they have a better summer with
roster re toin. But you know, as it has been
before the trade deadline, everything hinges on how healthy and
effective Lebron James Anthony Davis are UM. But even when
they've been playing well, the rosters and seriously flawed that
that might not be enough. But at least we're not
(43:37):
going to be seeing Russell's turnovers anymore and bad decisions,
and we're going to see a lot better three point
shooting then we saw at the first half of the the season.
So real quickly as you wrap up on the Lakers,
they get D'Angelo Russell, the league Beasley Beasley, Jared Vanderbilt.
But we'll Russell provide enough shooting help. He's his threes,
but who's he gonna guard? So is this? I mean,
(43:58):
how did help me on this? Yeah? Well, here's the thing.
He's gonna make enough threes, but he's probably gonna give
up a lot of three stro He's not a great defender.
And every time he gets traded to the Warriors or
the Timberwolves, they all say, oh yeah, like he's really
gonna buy in, and we think that, you know, his
defense can improve, and it doesn't. I know that there's
(44:18):
also some danger that because he's in the final year's contract,
does he go you know, does he try to pat
his staff? Like that's a very real thing. So, in fairness,
de Angelo he's been a much improved player and a
more mature player than certainly when the Lakers originally drafted
him in. But his game is his game at this point.
(44:40):
He's a great shooter, great playmaker, doesn't always make the
right pass. He can make the right pass, uh, and
he doesn't offer much on defense. But again, the Lakers
were in such dire straits that this is considered a
net upgrade. Mark, I gotta be honest that we're talking,
of course, from Mark Madino Midnight Magic, Mark Mdino or
a Fox spoite radio Google writer for nb dot com
(45:00):
figuring the pulse of the Lakers two weeks ago when
we had John, if you'd have told me Kyrie, Westbrook, Durant,
Pat Bev would all be on new teams. When we
talked tonight, knocked me over with a feather. Let's start
with Kyrie. Um just your knee jerk reaction on that trade. Yeah,
well the nexts needs to do it. I mean, Kyrie
was going to be disruptive ever since he didn't agreed
(45:23):
to the deal. Now with the Dallas Mavericks, I think
they're rolling the dice. I think from a next is
an O standpoint, it can work because for all the
negativity about Kyrie Irvy, no one disputes two things. He's
a really good basketball player, and from an next is
an O standpoint, he can coexist with other star players
even if he's not the main guy. It happened with
(45:43):
Lebron James, happened with Kevin Durant. I think it could
happen with Luca Dodgers, and the maths have been very clear.
When I talked with them this week when they were
practicing in l A, Jason Kidd said to me, Hey,
Luca's or the number one guy. Um, So yeah, Ka
is going to have to make some adjustments. But I
think it's more about making life easier for him, so
(46:04):
he doesn't have this huge usage rate and he has
doesn't have this huge workload, and I think Kyrie is
willing to do that. But there's a lot of other
question marks. Their team defense isn't gonna be good, um.
And also when is he going to be available, how
durable is he going to be? And even if he's
on his best behavior, there's always a dynamite on the
other side of the hallway that might blow up. So
(46:26):
you know, I think from the MAVs in they think, hey,
if this blows up in our face, we have cap
space this summer, he'll be off the books, He'll be
just be a few months rental. Um. But yeah, there
is this huge risk that even if you're sending the
message to Luca Dodgers, we're going on in and surrounding
you with talent. Uh. You know, the Mavericks might repeat
(46:47):
what the Nets have experienced the last three and a
half seasons with a lot of drama that wasn't worth
the cost of basketball excellence. And golly, let's hope Kyrie
is not disrespected like he wasn't broken. And that just
broke my heart. Oh my gosh, that was so ridiculous
When he said that in the press conference. I was
actually there and I did press on him in a
respectful way, like because he was going on a rand
(47:10):
about how so many things were misrepresented and accurate in
the media and the front office is leaking. And I
had him straight up like, how do you separate fact
and fiction of what happened last year? And he was like, oh,
you know, we could go through everything that happened, but
we don't have time for that. It's like, no, now
is the time you are, you have the podium, you're
in a press conference, we're asking you questions. Now is
(47:32):
the time to do it, and he refused to. I mean,
it's just ridiculous how much he plays the martyrm victim card,
but that's who he is. Lack of self awareness, my friend,
lack of accountability. He thinks he's the smartest guy in
the world, just ask him. But good luck. After Cleveland,
Boston and Brooklyn, I believe past will be prologue. Just wait,
let's get to Phoenix. Phoenix sense four first round picks
(47:54):
Michale Bridges, Jay Crowder, Ken Johnson and an additional draft
com Sensation. But listen, they went all in, and frankly,
I like Phoenix and or Denver's chances better than Dallas is.
But let's stick with Phoenix because if they decided to click,
they could be incredibly scary. Yeah. I think Phoenix is
now the front runner in the Western Conference. I mean,
(48:16):
that's what Kevin Durant does when you join the star
started team, and I think, unlike Brooklyn, there's going to
be more professionalism. Chris Paul's a great leader, Devin Bookers
a pro. You know, John Drayton had his issues last season.
He's still starting in the mouth, but he'll hold fall
in line. I think the bigger question is how healthy
can these guys be. Kevin Durant's been dealing with injuries.
(48:38):
He's not even back yet. The Sun's really plummeted the
standings first because Chris Paul is hurt, den Devin Booker.
I think for Max's and Oh's and personality, those are
all gonna be very good. They're gonna click and it's
plug and play. But how healthy can they be? That's
the great unknown. Um, So, you can't rule any teams out,
Teams like the Denver Nuggets, even with my kepticism with
(49:01):
Kyrie and Dallas. I mean from a talent standpoint there
there and hey, Sacramento Kings like the Beam, they didn't
make any trade deadline deals for the first time in
like decades because they don't need to. They have a
really good thing going with Daron Fox and Demonta Sabonis
and Keegan Murray and Harrison Bards. So, yeah, Phoenix is
a front er, but it's still up for grabs because
(49:22):
of all the uncertainty of regarding their health. I want
to switch gears ever so quickly. You got a guy
James Wiseman was the number two pick overall. Did the
Warriors bail on them too quick or what do they
know that I don't know? Yeah, you know, I did
some poking around here. I also, you know, watch their
games alive. I think the bottom line is this, they
they are very bullish about his long term trajectory. They
(49:44):
feel that he's going to be a special player, but
the reality is, you know, the Laker, the Warriors have
different priorities now where they have a lot of all
star players. They can't give him enough of that playing
time and they don't trust him enough with those kind
of minutes on a veteran team for him to develop up,
and so they made the difficult decisions of of trading
(50:04):
number two pick. I think it's also an admission that hey, um,
we made a mistake, but we're not going to keep
our head in the sand. We're going to make adjustments
and getting get back Garry paid in the second. Now
here's a complicated thing. Garry paid in the second has
had some complications with his physical This trade might not
go through. Yeah, it's crazy. The Warriors having too. I'm
(50:27):
understand they have until Sunday decide whether they will accept
this trade or not. But here's some complications here. Because
the trade deadline already passed, they can't go back to
Portland and say, hey, you need to send us another player. Uh,
the league. I think the league should do this, but
you know, per the rules, they can't say, hey, you know,
an exchange for this he had to give us a
(50:48):
few second round picks. Um. So they really have to
decide do they just stay with Garry Paid in the
second hope that he comes back. It's not a day
to day injury. It's not three months. From what I've
been told by, it's expected he'll be out at least
for a few weeks, and so they have to make
this decision. Is it work keeping a guy who's going
to be injured for at least you know, two three weeks? Um? Uh? Now,
(51:11):
the reality is that they were sending basically everyone has
to go back. So it might be a little awkward
for James Wiseman to be on a team after he
got traded. But you know, uh, even with him being
young and sometimes he'd be tough on himself with mistakes,
he can bounce back. But what about with Portland's end,
like if they would have to welcome back Garry Paid
in the second. I know Joe Cronin talked to the
(51:34):
Blazers GM today to reporters about saying, hey, you know,
the medical staff, we have confidence in them, and we
didn't clear that him without thinking that he's healthy. But
how would he feel coming back to a medical staff
that whether it's their fat or not played in a game.
And then all of a sudden was so hurt that
(51:55):
he couldn't pass his physical Like that's really awkward and weird.
But you know, you never have a rootin interest in
these things, but want to pertence the playerself. You certainly
root for them to have it. So hopefully this gets
resolved in a good way. Talk with Mark Medina and
bea dot com our Fox Sports treadio and be a guru.
All right, let's digress quickly back to Russell Westbrook. It's
(52:15):
worth the price of admission. These are one of my moles.
Are These are what my moles are telling me. Okay,
because they believe that, and I want to confirm this
with you that Utah. In addition to you know, by
the way they one tonight there can they compete? Man? Uh?
They added more draft capital, which is can be a
good thing. But I'm told they will likely buy out
(52:37):
Russell Westbrook and you could actually see what Westbrook maybe
should not unpack his bags. He could end up with
the Bulls or wait for it, even the Clippers. Are
you hearing any of that? Yeah, well, I think the
you taught jazz haven't officially done that, but they're in
the business of waving Ross because look, they're trying to
they're trying to rebuild and play younger players. They have
(52:59):
fifteen first round draft picks from now until. It's all
about collecting assets and rebuilding and improving their lottery odds. Now,
as far as where they go, sure, the Clippers and
the Bulls could be candidates. You know. I was at
the Clippers Bucks game tonight and Paul George was saying, Hey,
you know, if it would definitely improve our team if
we had a traditional point guard to get us into
(53:19):
things and make the game easy. And he was saying,
hopefully Ross sees us and we figure something out. But
I've been told that the Clippers front office don't it
doesn't really think that way. They feel that they'd be
much better having guys who could be two way players.
I mean, I think the the writings on the wall
that you know, not to say they didn't pursue potential
(53:41):
traditional point guards, but when it came down to it,
they pulled the trigger on getting Eric Gordon and Bones Highland,
And they're not traditional point guards. They're going to play
in the back corp. But they're not that traditional point
guard they got rid of. Uh, you know, guys like
Reggie Jackson who was inconsistent, John Wall who had some
health issues and some frustrations of sometimes showing his former
(54:02):
self and you know, flashes of him not being that
same player he once was pre injury. Uh So, yeah,
I think the writing is on the wall there. So
I would be surprised if he actually winds up with
the Clippers, and the Bulls seemed more likely, but you know,
trade deadlines yield surprises, and so did the biout market
sol so tuned wrapping it up with Mark Madina. So
(54:25):
here's another riddle, wrapped and set and enigma or whatever
that cliche is. Two things I heard this week from
people I've trust. One, you can't rule out that in
the off season you may see some sort of overture
where Kyrie tries to reunite with Lebron in Los Angeles.
The second thing I heard is that Lebron may may
(54:50):
consider trying to find another destination on the off season
and leave Los Angeles. Could you see either one of
those two scenarios come to fruition? Yeah, I would see
the Kyrie into the Lakers to team up with Lebron
to be more likely. Look earlier this week, Kyrie, ironically,
after being upset with Brooklyn that they want to offer
him a Max Steele was also asked, Hey, how do
(55:13):
you feel about any extension talks with Dallas and he said,
there's no rush with that. Basically, both sides are on
the same page. If there's no use committing long term,
Let's see how the partnership plays out from now until
presumably the playoffs, and then go from there. But I
think it's also to keep his options open. I also
want to be surprised if Kyrie Ruving tries to team
up with Kevin Duran again with Phoenix, so both things
(55:38):
are possible. You know, Lebron clearly has made his frustrations
known subtly or directly about you know, the roster construction.
Maybe these incremental changes will appease it. But even with that,
I would be very surprised if, at this stage of
his career that he decides, you know what I want out.
(55:58):
I want to get out of this extension and trade me.
I know that he wants to set up his the
end of his crease. He can play with Brawny, but
I think in the meantime, even through the you know,
the ups and the downs, I think that you know,
he's felt relatively better being with the Lakers. That's not
to say he's content with the direction, but I would
(56:20):
be surprised I get so bad that he wants no
part of it anymore. I mean, if there were those misgivings,
he would't have agreed to an extension last summer anyway. Now,
some of it was qualified with assurances from the front
office that they would go all in with improving the roster,
and they did that a little bit here during the
trade deadline, but not getting a star like of Kyrie's caliber.
(56:44):
But I think Lebron is of the understanding that the
Lakers certainly tried, and even though he said on ESPN
he's disappointed, he's going to be able to make the
best of it, and he understands that there's only so
many things the Lakers could do because their lack of
assets as well as you know, the Nets basically didn't
have any interest in dealing Kyrie to the Nets because
(57:05):
they didn't want to appease his priorities. Mark only get
about thirty seconds, but I meant to ask his four
questions Ago. I mentioned Pat Bev he was traded to
the Magic from Obama. But what will Mobamba's roll be
with the Lakers. Yeah, well, I think that that gives
them front court depth as well. Jared Vanderbilt in that
deal with Minnesota, basically they traded Thomas Bryant to Denver,
(57:26):
so the idea is to kind of offset his absence.
The reason why they traded Thomas Bryant to begin with
is they really like him as a player, but they
knew they said that it would feel it would be
pretty expensive to retain him because of his interests in
the market, So they're trying to, Uh, I think, do
this whole thing of hey, get something in return before
just laying him walk in the off season. Mark, great
(57:49):
stuff is always just get you back next week. Sorry,
this was such a slow news week, but we'll figure
some time about next week. I'm sure there'll be plenty,
but let's book. It never fails. Good to have you
all right, Mark, thanks so much, appreciate Keen, Uh, thanks
Pal Marcodini, NBA dot Com are NBA of course our
our Fox Sports Radio NBA guru and boy was at
a mouthful. Uh coming up, I'll just capsualize that to
(58:11):
put a little bit of a bull on the NBA stuff,
uh in cliff notes fashion, because it was kind of
like again like we did with Fez drinking, drinking through
a fire hose. But there were I have never in
my life, and I go back to really when I
was a intern at the Forum with the Lakers and
started to follow the NBA very fervently seeing a week
(58:31):
like this last week not even close. We'll put a
button on that. Coming up in just a second. I'm
Bernie Fratawe coming to you live from the Las Vegas
Fox Sports Radio Studios and tire Act dot Com Studios.
Keep it locked. You're listening to the Bernie Fratto Show
on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah, back on the Bernie Fratto
Show or come to you live from the tire Act
dot Com studios here in Las Vegas. Take get to
(58:53):
two am Pacific, five am Eastern. A lot of stuff
to get to and by the way, I have forgotten.
I want to give a tribute to Lebron James Uh,
the all time leading scorer and the National Basketball Association
broke a record that held for thirty nine years, going
back to when Kareem Abdul Jabbar broke Will Chamberlain's record
(59:19):
right here in Las Vegas, and uh. And in the
bottom line is uh. You know, regardless of how you
feel about Lebron, his his accomplishments speak for themselves, and
the resume is there. I I'll tell you a a little story.
Back in two thousand three, this, of course, I was
living in Detroit, as the CBS radio. I wanted to
drive down to Ohio, which close drive a couple of
(59:41):
hours to see St. Vincent St. Mary's play because I've
been hearing about Lebron James and basically, but if you
go back to two thousand three, he was the chosen
one in Sports Illustrated. He clearly was gonna be the
basketball's version of Tiger Woods. So I want to see
what you look like. I had three or four immediate
takeaways when I walked into that him that night. Number one,
(01:00:02):
I looked at him and his body. I don't know,
it's I think Lebron was born in eighty four, and
this was two thousand and three, was eighteen, and I
must say it was eighteen. He was built like an
NFL linebacker. Eighteen had an NBA body, and eighteen was
in Aniable. That's the first thing I noticed. The second
thing was he had guard skills. He was bringing the
ball up the floor and he was probably about six seven.
(01:00:24):
Then the third thing I noticed was he was pretty unselfish.
And I've seen a lot of high school stars. I
used to go to a lot of high school games
back in Silkl back, I mean I saw a lot
of phenomenal Uh. Doug Gottlieb talks about his best friend
Miles Simon. I remember when Miles is starting as a
sophomore modern day, and I saw Jason Kint high school.
(01:00:47):
So a lot of guys, and you know, they were
all good players. Lebron may have maybe been the most
unselfish high school superstar I've ever seen. I bought a
program that night. I said, I'm in a whole anilds,
this might be worth something someday. I think I paid
a buck or two, maybe two bucks. I don't even
get to my car. Somebody offers to be fifteen bucks
for it, is he I'll take it. Made seven on
my money that day, so I got that going for me.
So um bottom line is, uh, Look, he Lebron not
(01:01:11):
only did it, he did it in a hundred and
fifty less games, and and I think there's a little
bit more of the story. Maybe we'll put a little
bit more of a ribbon on that. It was kind
of crazy how the focus was on Westbrook and the
focus was on Anthony Davis and all the craziness and
the cell phones. We're in different times, man, it's weird
out there is a matter of fact. When Jabar broke
the record, it was so much more jovial. And again
(01:01:33):
it was done here in Las Vegas and Thomas Mac
Center against the Utah Jazz, and Frank Laydon, the legendary
head coach of the Utah Jazz, had the funniest press conference.
I didn't cover the game in any fishial capacity, didn't
even go to the game, but I knew all about it. Right,
this is he had the funniest press conference maybe I
(01:01:54):
think I've ever heard. I'll share that whether you're coming
up in just a second. But first let's go back
to our guy, Kevin Wire with the latest. Hey, there's
significant concerns over Gary Payton the second physical exam with
the Golden State Warriors. That's what Thursday's four team trade
involving Golden State, the Pistons, Hawks, and Trailblazers in jeopardy.
That's according to a report from ESPN. Goes on to
(01:02:15):
say that the Warriors have until Saturday to go through
with the deal or with some of the entire trade altogether.
No amendments to the deal can be made due to
the passing of Thursday's trade deadline. Cleveland Brown's owners Jimmy
and d Hasleman talks to buy a roughly twenty steak
in the Milwaukee Bucks. And speaking of the Bucks, they
beat the Clippers tonight one one await his j Honest
(01:02:35):
had thirty five points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Mavericks
beat the Kings fourteen and moved to two a note
since acquiring Kyrie Irving. He led the way with twenty
five points and ten assists to underbeat the Trailblazers. One
twenty nine Cavaliers over the Pelicans, one eight team, one
oh seven Grizzlies top the Timberwolves, one oh seven Heat
over the Rockets, one or Jazz beat the Raptors, one
(01:03:00):
won sixteen Celtics over the Horn sixteen seventy six beat
the Knicks, one nine team one await Sons beat the
Pacers one seventeen, one oh four, and the Pistons edge
out the Spurs in double overtime, one thirty eight to
one thirty one. New Mexico State University announcing that it
has suspended its men's basketball program due to what they
merely referred to as quote new allegations within the program. Stadium, however,
(01:03:24):
is reporting that it stems from an investigation of multiple
players repeatedly hazing a teammate. The school has said that
recent allegations prompted the investigation and has led to the
coaching step being placed on paid administrative lead. Back to you, Bernie.
All right, thanks Kevin. Just to finish the story that
I teased about Frank Laydon. It was really funny because
the Utah Jazz again they were in town to play
(01:03:46):
back then. I know it sounds crazy, the Lakers did.
The NBA would have a few games here, uh in
in Las Vegas at the Thomas and Mac Center, and
this was happened to be one of those games. And
uh and it would happen to be the game Jabar
broke uh Kareem Abdul Jabbar's record. It was actually like
(01:04:09):
April Lakers won by about fifteen. But here's where here's
where the funny press conference kicks in. So at the
uh the game, the game tips off, and the Lakers
just jump right out there all over the Utah Jazz.
It's like eight nothing in ten, four and then sixteen
to six, and all of a sudden, Frank Laydon calls
(01:04:32):
time out. He told the story in the press conference.
Um and and for the record, that night, ja Bar
only had twenty two points, but man, he came out
of the gate, uh, like like a house on fire.
And and and the Lakers had like forty one first half.
Check that forty one first quarter points. Um and you
talk close to the gap. Admitted the game. But but
it started out I think I want to say it
(01:04:53):
was like fourteen to four, and Jabar had like eight
or ten of the first fourteen points. So Frank Laydon
calls time out, straight face. He goes, hey, guys, we're
playing the Los Angeles Lakers, the perennial world champion Los
Angeles Lakers, even though they just got beaten by Philadelphia
the year before Sweat, but they had already had a
(01:05:14):
couple of championships under the built in the Magic era.
He says, guys, I I don't expect you to beat
the Lakers. Man, we can't beat the Lakers, but we
gotta beat you Bar. We got four points in Jabar's
got ten. So just promised me you'll beat you Bar.
I know we can't beat the Lakers, and they loosened
up and actually made it a pretty good game. They
ended up losing by four, ten or fifteen, but they
(01:05:35):
closed the gap in the first quarter. What was really
funny is, as you know, look, I lived in Los Angeles.
I lived in southern California long time. Just own it, man,
Folks like part of its traffic. You show up late,
leave early. But even happened in Las Vegas. Here's the
funny part. There was about I don't know, I want
to say, eight, nine, ten minutes to go in the
(01:05:57):
fourth quarter, and Frank Layden says, uh, look, look the
ushers are leaving. Look people are streaming up the aisles.
People are leaving. People are exiting the game as if
the game's over. They're still eight or nine minutes left.
So you got workers leaving, get ushers leaving, you got
fans leaving, got families leaving. Hell, if they're leaving, I'm leaving,
(01:06:20):
Frank Layden literally walked off the floor and somehow ended
up across the street in a bar. Might have I don't,
might have been the hard rock whatever. I can't that's
part of the detail. But that part of the story
I don't have details. But he ends up in a
bar uh a establishment that was a very well traveled establishment,
(01:06:41):
especially by the media. And he said, about half an
hour later, this throng of people kept come rushing in
to this establishment and they're all they're whooping and holler
him and he's Frank Laden goes, oh my god, I
hope we didn't win. That's that's what broke up the
press conference because they were down by about fourteen and
(01:07:01):
he's thinking, oh, man, if I left the floor and
we won, that would look at and I hope we
didn't win. Well, of course they need He remembered and
learned that that was the night that Kareem abdul Jabar.
The afternoon actually that that that that the uh you know,
he broke Jabar broke uh. Wilt Chamberlain's record much different
jovial time then, as opposed to what we saw the
(01:07:23):
other day, where instead of watching the game, everybody had
their cell phones up and uh, and Gottlieb was right
about this. He goes, come on, man, what are we
What are we really doing? If you want to do it, fine,
but it's just it's just what are we doing? And
that was a hell of a Laker team, by the way,
Ja Jabbar, Magic, Kurt Rambis Byron Scott and uh, you know,
the Utah Jazz weren't too bad either. They had Adrian
(01:07:44):
Danley and Darryl Griffith and Ricky Green and throw that
was a good team. You talk, won forty four games
that year. But the that was you know, I guess
you know, my short way of providing some context and
some texture to what happened the other night when the
round broke the record. But what do we have a
situation where people are convenching about Anthony Davis and the
(01:08:06):
Russell Westbrook. They don't even win the game, and one
thing needs to another And all right, enough of that, Michigas.
We don't really need to revisit that. You saw what happen.
It's in the record books. Now, congratulations to Lebron James.
And I remember again it's probably twenty years ago. Just
do about the month now that I saw him at St.
(01:08:26):
Vincent St. Mary's and knew very much that I was, uh,
you know, looking at a certain level of greatness based
on his body, type of maturity at the time, his
guard skills. You don't usually see that the high school
kid built like that, and the unselfishness. So so there
you have it. You know, people have suggested this, and
(01:08:48):
now the State of Tennessee is taking action. Could Super
Bowl Monday become a holiday? Well we're not to the
federal port yet, but the State of Tennessee he's certainly
giving it a go. I will tell you. I will
tell you what's happening there. I'm Bernie Fratto or coming
to your live from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio Studios,
(01:09:10):
tire Rat dot Com Studio. Stick can stay here listening
to you Bernie Fratto Show on Fox Sports Radio. Y'reright
back on the Bernie Fratto Show or Company live from
the tire Act dot Com studios here in Las Vegas.
Coming up Super Bowl fifty seven. And what's interesting, by
the way, is how many times have you heard it,
(01:09:30):
Mannie about in the last twenty years that maybe they
should make Super Bowl Monday the day after the Super
Bowl a holiday. Remember last year that Sincinnati Bengals announced
that all their schools and the kids are getting the
day off regardless of the outcome of the game. Since
Natie came very close to winning that Super Bowl last year.
But that was almost like a step in this direction. Right, well,
(01:09:53):
look out it don't look now, but the state of
Tennessee they're absolutely pushing to make Super Bowl Monday a holiday.
It is legitimately gaining momentum. Right, faith without works is dead,
but there are works here. They the good folks of Tennessee,
you very much want to day after your Super Bowl
(01:10:16):
to be a holiday, the Monday, and and people are agreeing,
including to lawmakers in Tennessee. And this is this is
a bill that's already been proposed. And the bill okay,
according to according to got there's a local paper. They're
the Morgan County Citizen, Senator London Lamar and Representative Joe
(01:10:36):
Towns Jr. They have introduced a bill that were replaced
Columbus Day with the day after the Super Bowl as
an official Tennessee state holiday. Now, this is not a
federal thing, so don't selectively listen Towns. The Representative Joe
Towns Jr. Said the day takes a toll on the workforce,
(01:10:57):
as many people's skip work the day after the game. Okay, Well,
the bill specifically reads quote Tennessee Cote annotated Section fifteen
dash one dash one on one is admitted by the
leading the language that quote the second Monday in October
known as Columbus Day, and by inserting the language the
(01:11:18):
first Monday after the Super Bowl known as Super Bowl Monday,
immediately following the language Washington Day. Now Center Lamar and
representative towns. They're going to need bipartisan support for this
bill to pass. If it does, it will go into
affect next year, Tennessee people. That would make Tennessee the
(01:11:40):
first date to officially recognize Super Bowl Monday as the
day of rest that many folks believe and wanted to
be if that were to happen with the Domino's fall.
Remember when PASPA was overturned in May of eighteen, and
that that overturned President Bush's Bill of and relegated it
(01:12:04):
back to states rights that they can decide for themselves
if they wanted a legal line sports gambling. At that point,
only two states, Nevada and Delaware, had ratified that on
their books. But now there are at least thirty two
thirty three states that offer legalized game. And you see,
Brent Musburger had it right. He predicted just what happened,
and it has happened in a big way. And let's
(01:12:26):
face it, Uh, I don't know what's gonna happen, but
this is a new story to me. And and let's
face it, the Super Bowl it is one of the
biggest cultural events in America because in one way or another,
millions of people are going to participate in the occasion,
even if they don't like football, the food, the parties,
the squares, the commercials, right, even if they're just watching
(01:12:49):
the broadcast for the commercials. I heard I heard one
local person signed on TV today and say, I understand
Ryanna was having a concert and sandwiched in between will
be two halves of a national football league. He had
kind of a straight face. Quite frankly, we have gotten
to the point where it's at least worth a conversation.
Has the Super Bowl Does it absolutely have some sort
(01:13:12):
of official holiday status. I know people have suggested to
move the game is Saturday. That will never happened. Why
there would be no reason to do that. By the way, Yeah, uh,
most people super Bowl Sunday are hooked up to a
blender early on copious amounts of alcohol on par i.
I I would bet when you look at the big
(01:13:33):
drinking days across America New Year's Eve, St. Patrick's Day,
I gotta believe super Bowl Sunday might be right there.
You believe the massive parties. Tomornnight we have Todd Dewey
other of the or later on tonight it's it's Saturday everywhere, Bernie.
Uh uh. Saturday night, we'll have Todd Dewey eleven Pacific,
(01:13:55):
the Las Vegas Review Journal. He'll take you behind the counter,
to take you behind the scenes and all the incredible
Super Bowl parties we're gonna be having here, uh during
Super Bowl fifty seven Sunday. Actually they've they've already started,
but the official game parties and will preview because remember,
the Super Bowl fifty eight is gonna be right here
(01:14:16):
in Las Vegas next year. So look, I get it.
And people they've convenched about this in the eighties. Money
is not a very productive workday. That's why the two
Tennessee lawmakers are presenting the new bill. So there you
have it will happen. I don't know. But Tennessee, you
know what I've always said, don't tell me, shown me.
Tennessee has shown you with their actions with two of
(01:14:38):
their they have a senator and representative. They've introduced a
bill and you can research it, and they basically want
to trade Columbus Day in October for Super Bowl Monday
in February. And I got a funny feeling that it
might It's one of those deals I think that might
just might just pass after all. And uh, you know,
top of the r you know, I never I never
(01:15:00):
tire of the the the fun facts about the Super Bowl,
you know, in terms of how people consume the game,
and then in terms of, you know, the historical aspects
of the Super Bowl and what can we learn from
past super Bowls that we might glean this super Bowl.
For instance, since nineteen seventy the nineteen seventy a f
(01:15:22):
L NFL merger, the Philadelphia Eagles are only the fifth
team to go into the Super Bowl after winning their
two previous games by more than three touchdowns. The other
four times that has happened, all four of those teams
lifted the Lombardi Trophy. So I sat at the top
of the show. I like Philadelphia. I'll reiterate why it
(01:15:44):
had a bit and it listen regardless of who you
like in the game, and this is basically a pick
him game, all right. It opened up Philadelphia, might you know, uh,
let's see you know it was actually Kansas cy I
think might is two and a half two weeks ago.
And then it went the other way pretty pretty pretty quickly.
It crossed over in some shops at Philly plus minus
(01:16:05):
two and a half, and you can even find some
threes if you looked hard. They didn't last long. But
now we're back down to one one and a half.
Philly is a favorite, and I think more Kansas City
money is gonna come in the same may clothes pick them.
But regardless of where you got the game, if you're
on your side right now, I'm still to to come.
Only about of the action here in Las Vegas has
(01:16:26):
been recorded. You'll see the other seventy five start to
happen now as we get closer to the game. But
if you just picked a winner and the previous fifty
six Super Bowls, if you just picked the winner, the
winner of the game is forty nine and seven against
the spread. Now, obviously a lot of times those were
dogs who were not right, but you've also got situations
(01:16:48):
where favorites blue blue teams out and as you know,
I mean that was one of our great laments for years.
You'd anticipate what was supposed to be a great game
in the Super Bowl and it was a blowout. You're
reaching for that, you know, Pimento dip more than you
want to, because the games a snoozer allthough. Oh thank
god for in game betting and props and things like
(01:17:09):
that that I'll keep a fan engaged. But just happened
two years ago when Tampa Bay Molly Optics Kevin Figures
would say, uh, Kansas City one seven. I remember back
in seven, one of the most anticipated Super Bowls for me.
It was the first time I'd ever gone to Vegas
to watch the Super Bowl was in seven. Super Bowl
(01:17:30):
twenty one, John Elway and the Denver Broncos twenty one
point favorites are checked that why don't we what are
you doing? Ten point favorites over Bill Belichick, who was
the defensive coordinator and Bill Parcel's head coach of the
New York Giants. New York Giants win that day. Thirty
nine to twenty is ten point underdogs, and I think
(01:17:51):
l Way through like a bomb to Riki Nutile to
start the game, and Denver was up seven enough and
people were going to nuts. Books cleaned up that day.
A lot of people bet Denver. I wasn't one of them.
I think I bet the over it four was the final.
Then Denver got hammered the next year too. I mean
they lost, they lost big to Washington and they lost.
They lost. You know, it took a while for our
way to get there. And you know, Buffalo got hammered
(01:18:14):
even though they went to the Super Bowl four times,
So you never know. It's been much more competitive in
recent years. Although remember just two years ago again Tom
Brady and the Bucks took out the chief thirty one
to seven, and something tells me the Chiefs remember that.
But be that as it made the games, wonted the
line of scrimmage. And I think Philly is just too
(01:18:34):
strong on both sides of the interior line. And I
gave the stat earlier about Philly running for four touchdowns
against the number one defense, and how does that go
against Kansas City and the in the front they run
coming out ten fun facts about the Super Bowl. I
bet you didn't know. Keep it locked. This is Bernie Fraddo,
the Bernie Fraddo Show on Fox Sports Radio. Well, that's right,
you heard the man. The Bernie Fratto Show keeps rolling
(01:18:57):
right along. My name is Bernie Fratto. We are a
comedy a lie have from the entire act dot Com
studios here in Las Vegas, home of Super Bowl and
home with some of the wildest Super Bowl parties anywhere,
that have basically already begun tire rac dot com. We'll
hope you get there and unmatched selection, fast free shipping
(01:19:17):
for road hazard protection and over ten thou recommended installers.
Ti rac dot com the way tire buying should be. Okay,
let's have a little fun. We do this just about
every year, but there are always and sometimes there are
new facts that emerge. But I've got ten fun facts.
There's probably more than that, but I kind of got
(01:19:38):
a kick out of these. You know that Super Bowl
is one of the biggest sporting events, but there's all
kinds of sidebar facts that you may or may not
know about, Like, for instance, did you know that players
get their own special car to drive around for the week.
So here we are. Sunday is just around the corner.
(01:20:00):
And to a lot of folks, they really feel like
this is the best day of the year. Okay, there's
just something about it, and and it's you know, the
Super Bowl commercials are cool. They call one a five
million dollars for a minute now, and and and and
what's interesting. So let's let's move through these. Number one,
believe it or not, super the super Bowl. And I
(01:20:20):
did this over Thanksgiving because Thanksgiving is the number one
eating day in the country, but Super Bowl is just
right behind it, the second eating day, the second biggest,
our second highest eating day for Americans, and Super Bowl
food is kind of one of the best parts of
the day. I mean, when you consider one example, eight
(01:20:41):
million pounds of guacamole will be consumed on Super Bowl Sunday. Dude,
that's a lot of avocados. Man. The Green Bay Packers,
you probably know, the very first team to ever win
the Super Bowl, nineteen sixty seven Super Bowl one. It
was played at the Colosseum. Packers went over the Chiefs
thirty I have the ten Yes. The Chiefs quarterback by
(01:21:02):
Lenny Dawson. The first Super Bowl MVB quarterback was Bart Star.
Here's what's funny. The game was played at the Los
Angeles Memorial College SYUM. About sixty million people watched the
broadcast on TV. It was two thirds empty day to
giveaway tickets today over ONLLION, people watched the game and
try to get the ticket. By the way, twelve teams
(01:21:24):
have never won the Super Bowl. Four have never even been.
The list of teams that have never won the Super
Bowl includes last year's title contender, of course that since
Nanny Bengals. The four teams that have never even been
to a Super Bowl are the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars,
Detroit Lions, and Cleveland Browns. The other seven teams who
(01:21:48):
have been in lost are the Minnesota Vikings They've been
there four times, the Buffalo Bills they've been there four times,
Atlanta Falcons have been twice, and Carolina Panthers have been twice.
Arizona Carlo has been once, Tennessee Titans once, and the
Chargers once. Back in so the twelve teams still have
never won the Super Bowl. Back to the Fancy Cars.
(01:22:10):
Marlon Jackson, who played for the Indianapolis Colts. He got
the Colts into the Super Bowl. Back, I want to
see it was two thousands. Let's see early two thousand's.
But it was Super Bowl I think thirty six, two
thousand three two whatever. Uh, this is no that that
(01:22:34):
was two thousand seven. How can I forget? It was
in Jacksonville the year after it was in Detroit. It
was raining down there thirty eight degrees. And uh, the
the the the Colts beat the Chicago Bears, and what
got them into the Super Bowl was Marlon Jackson, who
was playing again playing for the Colts, intercepted a pass
by Tom Brady in the playoffs and that put them
in the Super Bowl, the Colts, and that of course. Uh,
(01:22:58):
he did an article for readers digest that's pretty random
and said that, or he was featured in an article
and said, every player on both teams gets a fancy
lonar car to drive around all week. And what did
he drive? Drove a Cadillac Escalade back And that was
back in two thousand and seven. By the way, Guess
which college, which university is the top school for producing
(01:23:20):
quarterbacks that start in the Super Bowl? Is it Alabama?
No good? Guess is a Notre Dame? No good? Guess,
all right, done guessing. The University of California at Berkeley
is the top school for producing quarterbacks that start in
(01:23:42):
the Super Bowl. The most recent of chorus, Jared Goff,
started in the Super Bowl for the Rams, where they
lost to that Bill Belichick defense. But before that, and
this is all, give it a tap, give it, give it,
give it, winking a nod, raise a glass to the
California Bears. These are the orderbacks that cal has produced
(01:24:03):
that have started in the Super Bowl. Jared Goff, Joe
cap Craig Morton, Vince Ferragamo and oh yeah, how could
we forget? And Rodgers winking and nod Alabama though Bart Star,
Joe Namath, Kenny Stabler, and all of them won their
(01:24:24):
Super Bowl Star one, two of them Nameth of course,
the famous win over the Colts and Super Bowl three
and he guaranteed victory. They were seventeen point underdogs. Incredible,
And of course Kenny Stabler, the snake unreal. A couple
of other schools you might not have thought of, of course,
(01:24:45):
Notre Dame Darrel Monica, another Raiders quarterback he started for
in the Super Bowl. Sort of, how can you forget?
Joe Montana and Joe Thiersman, both of them won their
Super Bowls, and Purdue Lenny Dawson, Bob Greasy and Drew Brees.
They actually ranked second with three Super Bowl quarter backs each,
so not bad, uh, not bad, but cal ye, I
bet you wouldn't have known that. Then the University of
(01:25:06):
California has produced the most Super Bowl starting quarterbacks. Um.
How about ten years ago this month, Super Bowl forty
seven saw two brothers coaching against each other in the
Super Bowl for the first time ever, Jim Harball, head
(01:25:28):
coach of the Forts and John Harball, head coach of
the Baltimore Ravens. They made history and it was known
as the Hardball Bowl or the Horror Bowl. John's team
one thirty one that gave Jim's team their first Super
Bowl loss in franchise history. The Niners, I think, had
been four times before, and one of them all this
(01:25:50):
was their first Super Bowl loss. As you probably know,
the NFL has traditionally not held Super Bowl and stadiums
with a climate of lesson fifty degrees fahrenheit unless it's
covered or in a retractable roof. Now, they did have
a game in the Medtal Ends a couple of years ago,
and they got pretty lucky with the weather. We've had
them in cool weather cities Minnesota more than once, and
(01:26:12):
then of course Detroit. I covered Super Bowl forty and
two thousand and six. But interestingly enough, and I don't
know if this will change, but eleven of them, of
the of the fifty six that have been played have
all been have been in Miami, but only four have
been held in northern cities. I think too in Minnesota,
wanted Detroit, and then of course at the metal Lands
New York Giants home stadium a couple of years ago.
(01:26:33):
By the way, each team gets a lot of footballs.
They're they're they're given a hundred eight footballs per team,
fifty four meant for practice, fifty four and meant for
the actual game, and on the average Super Bowl Sunday,
a hundred and twenty footballs are used. The rest are
used for kickers. By the way, Uh you know, I
I know people are going to insert their own in
(01:26:53):
Tom Brady in flate gate right there. But finally, fun
fact never ten a special coin is always used for
the coin toss. This is the Super Bowl we're talking about. Okay,
everything is over the top that includes the coin toss.
The quarters simply will not do. Okay. They have what's
called a Highland mint. They make the specially unique coin
(01:27:15):
to use for the toss, with an image of the
Lombardi Trophy to signify heads, another image representing the current
Super Bowl for tails. Fun facts of the Super Bowl.
I bet you didn't know. Coming up more Super Bowl
stuff is will take you all the way to two
and Pacific five am Eastern. I can't wait now, Okay,
(01:27:36):
we gotta wait all day Saturday. Now, we got ourselves
all rebbed up and we'll dive into this much much
more and our Saturday night show. Hey football fans, be
sure to tune into Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff
presented by Ben MGM Sunday morning, three hours before kickoff.
Tune in at ten am easterns. Will take you live
all the way to kick off on Fox Sports Radio.
I Heart Radio app presented by Bet MGM. Coming up
(01:27:57):
much more super Bowl stuff. I'm Bernie friderwork of Belive
from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. Keep it locked.
You're listening to the Bernie Fratdo Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Right back on the Bernie Fadder Show or Company Live
in Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio Studios, the Tire Act
dot Com Studios. You know. Earlier in the show, I
talked about how the state of Tennessee is is introduced
(01:28:19):
a bill to make a super Bowl Monday and national holiday.
You've ever wondered how this whole thing got started. I'm
gonna tell you because there's quite a backstory how the
Super Bowl was almost accidental, and it certainly wasn't intentional.
But now it's become this international event and super doesn't
begin to really describe it. Uh. And yes, amazingly, he'll
(01:28:44):
be here in Las Vegas in Super Bowl fifty. Uh.
The Raiders will be the host team. And of course
that's where the story begins, because without a guy named
Al Davis, Uh, we would not have had a Super Bowl.
And I'm gonna explain and why. So let me start
out by saying this and how far this has come.
(01:29:06):
The first ever super Bowl wasn't even called the Super
bowls called the a f L NFL Championship game played
on January nineteen sixty seven. And I will say the
NFL wasn't real thrilled because their biggest concern was not,
how you know, not that Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers
would would hammer the upstar Kansas City chief, but how
(01:29:26):
much would they beat them by? Lombardi had actually called
the AFL, this is when it was the FL NFL.
He called the a FL a Mickey Mouse League, of course,
fitting lead. The inaugural game was played just down the
road from Disneyland at the l A Coliseum, and again
it wasn't even called the super Bowl, was called the
(01:29:46):
AFL NFL Championship Game. Tickets twelve bucks apiece, and they
ended up giving about thirty thousand away to beef up attendance.
You know, the cal Seum holds about a hundred thousand
and they still have thirty thousand empty seats. So not
only was it not still called, not even called the
super Bowl, yet it wouldn't be called the super Bowl
(01:30:06):
until Super Bowl four, when they actually printed the words
super Bowl on the tickets. Set the record straint. That
was Kansas City getting their come up AND's and Lenny
Dawson beating the Minnesota Vikings, a great Minnesota Vikings team
that looked almost a beatable six. And that's of course
the famous NFL films. We see Hank Stramp gracing the sidelines.
(01:30:27):
Just keep it tricking, ling the ball down the field boys, right,
But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, take
a little trip down memory lane with me. Okay, nineteen
six six and what was happening? There was a war
between the FL and NFL. The NFL thought the FL
was a joke. The FL THEO had a brand of
football that was kind of a sleek, cool, offensive, follies
(01:30:50):
football game, and so they decided that they would engage
in a bidding war for NFL talent because the NFL
didn't respect the FLU. It had been going on for
about five or six years, but it became more extreme
when the ANFL actually went to court scored a victory
as the Houston Oilers sued the NFL and the Los
(01:31:12):
Angeles Rams because because Billy Cannon, the Heisman Trophy winner
from LSU, had been drafted or tried, they both teams
tried to sign him, well, the NFL, they checked out
the FL and the Houston Oils. Oilers prevailed. So what
happened next? The stakes elevated. A f L said we
(01:31:34):
are going after big time college talent. Remember the year
before nixt five. The Jets had signed Alabama quarterback by
the name of Joe Willie Nameth four hundred thousand dollars
four and seven thousand bonus in nineteen sixty five, but
not to be out down in the NFL said hey,
we can play that game too. The Atlanta Falcons. They
(01:31:55):
doled out six hundred thousand dollars to a lineback from
Texas named Tom Nobis Hall of Famer, and the Green
Bay Packers pointed up seven thousand dollars to Texas Tech
running back Donnie Anderson. But here's the straw that broke
the back. This broke the camel's back. Buffalo had a
place kicker named Pete google Lac and after playing out
(01:32:17):
his option with his contract in the Buffalo Bills in
six he actually signed a contract to jump to the
NFL for the New York Giants. However, the league had
determined that the Giants had broken what was called the
no tampering Code had officially been violated. And now all
of a sudden, you talk about war, not real war,
but you could work with me, Okay. It got so
(01:32:40):
intense that on April seven, the commissioner at the time
of the a f L guy by the name of
Joe Foss. He had done his best to be a
peacemaker for the last couple of years, wasn't working. He resigns.
Here it comes enter the ultimate Maverick, the ultimate football
all Icon GM of the Oakland Raiders, guy by the
(01:33:02):
name of Al Davis. Al Davis assumes the role and
the reigns of commissioner for thirty days. And you talk
about a presence combined with the clever game plan that
he put together, this is what created history. So what
al Davis did He organized an NFL war chest and
(01:33:22):
he urged donors start collaborating with the stated intent of
raiding NFL stars. See, the NFL had always bragged of
its superiority over the FL, largely due to the number
of star quarterbacks that the NFL had at the time.
And to what al Davis said, Hey, we want a
full scale assault, a full scale effort to sign those
(01:33:43):
quarterbacks and bring them over to the a f L.
Man it was crazy. Rams had a quarterback by the
name of Roman Gabriel through to form Al Davis signed
Roman Gabriel to the Raiders. The Houston Oilers, they managed
to steal John Brody from the San Francisco forty Niners
(01:34:03):
and got him to agree to a five year deal
within just a few days. All of a sudden, eight
NFL quarterbacks no remembers the NFL and NFL. Then eight
NFL quarterbacks started to you know, dicker with the FL
to see, hey, let's see what we can get. But
by early June sixty six, about thirty days, the NFL relented.
(01:34:29):
Less than two months after he became commissioner, Al Davis
got what he really wanted. He got a merger deal
between the a f L and the NFL, and all
the actual merger that created the FC in the NFC
for one NFL now, although that actual merger wouldn't consummate
for about five years. Actually it wouldn't consummate till there
(01:34:55):
were a lot of implementations that took place right away.
The league established a common draft in seven, they began
inter league season play that fall, and three years later
regular season contests between the two leagues commenced. So basically
what happened was there was one NFL now, not an
(01:35:16):
NFL in an NFL. One NFL comprised of the a
f C and the NFC, but most importantly brings us
back to our point. They established a championship game between
the a f L and the NFL. It was formed,
and they decided they would call it, how clever, the
a f L NFL Championship Game. Now, obviously the a
(01:35:38):
FL NFL Championship Game had kind of a drab ring
to it, right, And there's a lot of conjecture as
to how the actual names super Bowl was born. One
particular popular story has to do with a high level
executive scratching his head one weekend at home trying to
come up with a catchy title, when he saw his
(01:35:58):
son playing with a fame his toy from the sixties
called the super Bowl super ball. You bonced that it
would go way up on the air fifty feet. This
was a famous toy. You can google it and see
eight boy. If they're out there now, they're probably a
collector's item. But he allegedly saw his son bouncing the
super Bowl around the house and he said, let's call
(01:36:19):
it the super Bowl. Now, the story has been dismissed
by some people as apocryphal, right, the common belief, and
I don't know that we'll ever know. I don't ever matter.
He's at some unnamed sportswriter just sort of coined the
name one day out of nowhere, and it's somehow stuck
super Bowl. But the beauty of it is, this is
a story that has a very happy ending, right Roman Gabriel.
(01:36:44):
The Rams never went to the Raiders. John Brody never
left the forty niners, but he did manage to get
himself a one million dollar settlement. Meanwhile, Al Davis resigns
as the commissioner of the FL thirty days after the merger.
What happens then he goes back to the Raiders. The
super Bowl was born for Super Bowl what was called
(01:37:06):
the f L NFL Championship game played on January seven.
I said they had to give away tickets and they
was still empty. Go watch that. They showed it all
the time. Just go to the NFL channel when he
you know what, the various channels they'll they'll show that game.
Green Bay beat Kansas City to ten. A lot of
star power in that game. But for the rest of us,
(01:37:28):
what are we left with? This thing called the Super Bowl.
That's an incredibly happy event. And every way you got
the parties, the stories, the office pools, the sports wager
in the game itself. And frankly, you can't have this
day that we're gonna be all glued to on Sunday
without thinking the great Al Davis true story. And you
(01:37:51):
can't have conversations like this without the Great Al Davis.
Like the historical underdog, Pat Mahomes eight and one against
the spread. That's as an underdog in his career, the
best win percentage as an underdog since the merger. Now,
if Mahomes closes as an underdog in Super Bowl fifty seven,
it will prevent him from tying Peyton Manning for the
(01:38:12):
longest streak fourteen games in a row as a betting
favorite in the playoffs in Super Bowl history. Now, remember
the NFL goes back to the forties, thirties. You got
us heyday in the fifties with the advent of TV.
That's why they you know, they claim the greatest game
ever played Baltimore against the Giants in that wasn't the
(01:38:36):
first game on TV the year before the Lions killed
the Cleveland Browns, like fifty seven to fourteen, And no
one talks about that game because it wasn't the greatest,
but it was on TV. So you know, you follow
the line Here's what's really interesting now too, because the
conversation you have now I have come out of the
shadows and they're in the mainstream. Follow the line movement
(01:38:57):
in the Super Bowl. Eighteen times in Super Bowl history
the line has moved one and a half points or
more from opening to closing. Now, here's what's interesting. The
team's direction as the line moves towards They are sixteen
and two straight up on four tune and four against
the spread. Now, that would favor the Eagles, right because
(01:39:17):
initially they were an underdog to the Chiefs on the
send off line, and then you know, a ton of
Eagle money came in. So will it happened again? Last
year's Super Bowl fifty six, the Rams actually one to twenty,
but they failed to cover the four and a half
point spread that gave the cover to the Bengals, entering
the game super Bowl winners with a special over the
spread of of six or less. Yes, no against the
(01:39:41):
spread again, that favors the Eagles, I believe, and I've
given multiple reasons throughout the show, and I'll reiterate that
before we sign off tonight. But again, since the n
f L NFO merger merger, there's that word again. The
Eagles are the only the fifth team to go into
the Super Well after winning their previous two games by
(01:40:02):
twenty one or more points. Their four predecessors, all of
them one, all of them lifted to Lombardi Trophy. And again,
as I said earlier, it just picked the winner. And
you're forty nine and seven against the number. There's a
little Super Bowl stuff for you, as if you hadn't
had enough. And yeah, there's gonna be even more Saturday
Night coming up. Chris Prefreen's World of Soccer, the other
(01:40:23):
football we talk about. Plenty of stuff in the news,
but first let's go back to our guy, Kevin Wyatt
with the latest big news in college basketball is new.
Mexico State University has announced and suspending its men's basketball
program due to what they referred to as new allegations
against the program. Stadium is reporting that it stems from
an investigation of multiple players repeatedly hazing a teammate. The
(01:40:44):
school has said that recent allegations prompted the investigation and
has led to the coaching staff being placed on paid
administrative leave. As for the action on the hardwood, only
one ranked team in action on Friday, and it was
number thirteen Xavier. The Musketeers upset on the road by
Butler sixty nine sixty seven, Xavier losing outright at seven
point favorites. In the NBA, there are significant concerns over
(01:41:06):
Gary Payton the second physical exam with Golden State, and
that has put Thursday's four team trade involving the Warriors, Pistons, Hawks,
and Trailblazers in jeopardy. That's according to report from ESPN.
The report says that the Warriors have until Saturday to
go through with the deal or send the entire trade altogether.
No amendments to the deal can be made due to
the passing of Thursday's trade deadline. A couple of late
(01:41:27):
scores from the West Coast as the Bucks beat the
Clippers one nineteen one oh sixty honest with thirty five points.
Mavericks beat the Kings fourteen to make it two wins
in the Roads. It's acquiring Kyrie Irving he lived the
Way for Dallas twenty five points. Tennis sis Luca Dontech
again did not play tonight. Trailblazers fall to the Thunder
one thirty eight one twenty nine, Cavaliers beat the Pelicans
(01:41:48):
one eighteen one oh seven, Grizzlies over the Timberwolves one
oh seven, he beat the Rockets on five, Jazz over
the Raptors sixteen, Celtics beat the Hornets eighteen seventy six
is top the next one nine team one oh wait,
Sons outshine the Pacers one seventeen one oh four and
the Pistons beat the Spurs one to one thirty one.
Back to Bernie. All right, thanks Karvin, your job buddy.
(01:42:09):
All right, this time every week, uh there is always news.
The World Cup may be over, and we were years
away from the World Cup coming to North America, but
that doesn't stop the news circle from churning. And Chris
has a particularly interesting report this week. So without further ado,
let's bring in Chris Prefens World of Soccer, The greatest goals,
(01:42:35):
the thrilling finishes, the international drum. It's all here in
this report from the world of soccer. Ernie strap in
for a big one here because one of the richest
clubs in the world is now having a sword swing
(01:42:57):
over its head as a massive case is being leveled
against the English club Manchester City from the Premier League,
itself a case and investigation going back to two thousand
and nine up to this very season. It is comprehensive,
it is deep, and it has a lot to do
with the finances and how soccer it has evolved financially
(01:43:20):
over the years. To understand these charges, we have to
understand the idea of financial fair play rules in soccer.
In Europe, there's not such a thing as a salary cap,
but unlike baseball, you can't just keep spending and maybe
pay a luxury tax. The financial fair play rules they're
different for each league, including YUAIFA, and they all have
(01:43:40):
the one thing in common is that the basis is
that you cannot spend more than you earn. This has
done for two principal reasons. The first is that it's protective.
We had many years where clubs nearly spent themselves out
of existence in the past few decades, and FIFA invited
these rules to prevent these kind of crisis is from
(01:44:02):
happening again. That make sure that clubs just don't outspend themselves.
The second part is competitive, and that's where cities in
trouble because the financial fair play rules in that light
are someone say unsuccessfully, we'll get back to that in
a second supposed to stop owners from buying clubs and
then simply just outspending everyone else and completely ruining ruining
(01:44:26):
competition in a league. Now, if you're familiar with the
state of Manchester City, it's been an open secret that
they've flouted these financial fair play rules from the competitive
side for a long time. It's just been a matter
of catching them and also getting past the fact that
they've got very powerful financial and legal weapons at their
(01:44:47):
disposal to crush anyone trying to punish them for this.
For example, UEFA, the major governing body of Europe, try
to hit the city with a two season and from
European competition in for breaching their own financial fair play rules,
but it was overturned at the Court of Arbitration for Sport,
(01:45:07):
the top court in the world for these kind of deals,
where City was able to argue that most of the
charges were either unproven or outside UEFA's statute of limitations. Well,
there's no statute of limitations where the Premier League is concerned.
So what are these charges? They basically come down into
three categories. First, that the club artificially increased their reported
(01:45:28):
income with money that came from the same people who
owned the club. You can traces back to a report
from German paper Der Spiegel, who mentioned that the club
was basically artificially artificially inflating the value of their sponsorship
deals with UAE state owned companies, which, by the way,
Manchester City is owned by a group representing the ruling
(01:45:51):
family of Abu Dhabi. The second category is that they
misrepresented the cost of managerial and players salaries. For instance,
they sometimes double pay someone having them get paid from
an Emirati club as well as Manchester City. And then third,
and probably the most important, is the cover up. It's
(01:46:11):
that they did not comply with or hindered investigations into
these previous two categories of accusations. This is a surprise development,
not because of the charges themselves, but because I think
this day wouldn't ever come, and apparently neither did several
Premier League clubs. Many other clubs in the Premier League
(01:46:32):
have known for a while how City is able to
manipulate their finances and gain this competitive advantage. Some have
complained openly about it, but nothing's really come of it.
So the fact that it's day of reckoning is here
is shocking and To be clear, City isn't alone in
flouting financial fair play rules. Many would allege that Paris
Saint Germain, owned by the Government of Cutter, is also
(01:46:55):
flouting many of these rules. But there in lines of
the rub most of the financial value of the French
domestic League one is tied up in Paris Saint Germain
and all its superstars that Qatar has bought. Whereas in
the Premier League, Manchester City is an incredibly valuable club,
but it's not the most valuable club, and in fact,
there are many other clubs with a lot of value
(01:47:15):
there in Manchester United, in arsenal, in the grand scheme
of things, they are not important to the Premier League's
financial standing. And using American aphorism, pigs get fed and
hogs get slaughtered, and Manchester City is looking like a
ri bull hog right now. So what's going to happen
to Manchester City. Well, I've heard several things across the board.
(01:47:35):
I think there will absolutely be a financial penalty they'll
have to pay. It's more about what happens to them
on the competitive side. On one side of it, the
most realistic thing is that there could be a points
deduction which would drop them, kind of like how Juventus
was uh penalized earlier in this year, where they were
dropped fifteen points. They'd be dropped down the standings. However,
on the more harsh side, they could be relegated altogether
(01:47:58):
again like Juventus was back in two thousand and six
for a role in the match fixing scandal, where they'd
have to fight their way back up to the Premier League.
They could lose their three titles as well. I don't
I don't think they're going to be relegated, but we
will have to see. I expect a points deduction, which
is still significant. It would kill their hopes were a
Premier League title this year and probably any hope of
(01:48:20):
going to any UWAFA competitions rest assured. Though, the bigger
story is that this club, it's a day of reckoning,
long awaited. All right, Bernie. We also have the return
of Champions League this upcoming week. I'm gonna try to
run through what we've got so far coming up here
on Tuesday and Wednesday. It's the four four knockout round matches,
the first legs of each, So unlike the World Cup,
(01:48:42):
these are not one and Dunn's. They're basically home and
home and the winner gets decided by goal aggregate between
the two matches. So if you take controlling lead in
the first leg, that can be critical to securing your
tickets the next round. You can play a little looser
rest some of your guys. It's it's a hard time
year with a busy calendar. On Tuesday, we've got a
c Milan of Italy is going to be hosting English
(01:49:05):
club Tottenham Hotspur, coming off a moment of history for
Tottenham star Harry Kane. He stands alone as Tottenham's leading
goal score at two hundred and sixties seven after last weekend,
passing legendary footballer Jimmy Greaves. He's also now only the
third player in history with two hundred Premier League goals.
(01:49:25):
The moment for Harry Kane came very quietly over the weekend.
Premier League we're not really celebrating individual achievements quite as
loud as say the NBA might have done for Lebron.
James rest assured the record basically summons Harry Kane is
one of the best English footballers of all time. Meanwhile,
from Milan, they've been flagging they hadn't had a lead
(01:49:46):
lead in domestic play for over a month through seven
matches until they always exceptional Olivier Gerude gave them a
screaming header in their win over Torino. They're hoping to
get back to form. Also on Tuesday, a battle of giants,
Harris st Germain hosting Germany's Byron Munich. This is a
really fascinating matchup. PSG has really yet to put together
(01:50:07):
all of its talent together in the Champions League this
This is going to have to be the crucial year.
But group stage wasn't great for them. They failed to
capture first place in a relatively easy group. While they've
settled some doubts back in domestic play in France, Lionel
Messi is an injury doubt to play here. Of course,
they still have killing embopy, but missing Messi's play could
(01:50:28):
be troubling. Meanwhile, on the flip side, Byron Munich is
also in a bit of trouble there, once again in
a familiar phase where they seem to be stumbling and
they've usually been able to claw back from it, but
it invites a lot of questions all the time. So
in spite of a perfect group stage earlier in the
Champions League. Domestically, they've shown cracks often unquestioned. In bundes League,
they've always been the one to lift the shield at
(01:50:48):
the end of the year. They've now had a rash
of three state straight draws not long ago, and they're
only a one point lead over Union Berlin. This play
is far too shaky to be confident here. As Champions
League resumes and on Wednesday, we've got German side Borussia
Dortmund taking on the English club Chelsea, and the Belgian
club Bruga taking on Portuguese side Benfica. Borossi A. Dortmund
(01:51:12):
and Chelsea are more interesting because the American connections. While
the transfer window has come and gone and Chelsea still
holds onto the Americans star Christian Pulasitch, they might be
open to trading him once again here in the summer window. Meanwhile,
for Dortmund, we talked about it last time, Bernie, about
Giovanni Reno's play. They haven't had the greatest group staging
Champions League, but they have found themselves surging thanks to
(01:51:35):
Reno's play. They're playing fantastic ball. Another clash I am
really looking forward to. We'll look forward to all the
Champions League and more on the world of soccer. Chris
Profet's World of Soccer We've run at this time every Friday,
and always a plethora of information, is the most probably
it's probably the most you know, popular sport in the world,
(01:51:59):
even though it's not the popular sport here in the
United States. But I look for that to start to
change as the World Cup comes here to North America.
UH in four years, three years now? All right, coming up,
final thoughts on the Super Bowl, UH and why I
am going to reiterate why I like the Eagles. And
here's here's a little hint for you. Here's a little teasers,
(01:52:21):
a little spoiler alert. Far too much as being made
of the quarterbacks. I heard someone analyze that, well, I
trust uh Mahomes. I trust mahomes ankle more than I
trust to hurt shoulder. Football is played in three phases.
I want to break that down for you. And just
a minute here, let's not focus too much on the quarterbacks,
(01:52:42):
because there are a lot of other aspects of this
game that I want to annotate that are important. You know, Look,
fifty years ago, I did this show on January four,
a month ago. It was fifty years of the day
that the Dolphins closed the deal and they won the
Super Bowl super Bow seven, becoming the only team just
ask Mercury Morris to go seventeen oh and old play,
(01:53:05):
you know, with every game that season. And look they
did it largely, you know, at the hands of a
quarterback who was so old his blood type was discontinued.
I'm talking about the great or a Moral from Michigan State.
He joined the team. He actually he was only thirty
eight Bradies forty five, but he looked older, a lot
older Brady, and they put him when when he joined
(01:53:28):
the team in Miami, Sheila had the foresight to bring
him in as a backup after the Dolphins had lost
Super Bowl year before you know, they they bought him
a rocking chair and he put in front of his
locker and he was really good natured about it. When
they started to take it away, he looked at miss
No the rocking chair stays. I like it. And that's
(01:53:48):
a quarterback who led into the Super Bowl. He couldn't
hold a candle to you of these two quarterbacks playing today.
So let's not focus too much because there's little things
called defense, special teams, and I'm gonna I'm gonna up
when you handicap, when you could prognosticate, you look for
strength versus weaknesses, And I'm gonna give you what is
glaring to me that I just can't not unsee. Bernie Fratto,

I go any further tonight, I want to thank my
broadcast team back in Los Angeles. They've been with me
(01:54:33):
since oleven pm Saturday night. Be Kevin wired on the updates,
of course Ethan Miller, and of course Mark Ramsey turning
all the dials, keeping us glued together. Outstanding job. Really
appreciate the teamwork and and professionalism. I also want to
very much thank all the folks the outpouring I got
on Twitter regarding the passing my mom Wednesday. I means
(01:54:56):
a lot. I am very humbled and appreciative. I walk
by faith, not by sight. Onward and upward and remember
in life, it's now what happens, it's how you react.
So as we all look ahead to uh the Super
Bowl Sunday, we've been told we get it. How evenly
match these teams are and they are Chiefs for sixty
(01:55:18):
and three, the Eagles are sixty three. Chief scored a
hundred five forty six points on the season. The Eagles
scored five six points on the season. Both teams feature
six All pros, including a Kelsey brother. The Chiefs have
an all Pro quarterback. The Eagles have an all Pro quarterback.
They're both number one seeds. Only happened thirteen times in
(01:55:39):
the history of the Super Bowl, but there's one. As
you handicap and as you prognosticate, and as you start
to analyze deeper, you look for strength versus weaknesses. One
of the things Philly did was to give up fifty
one fewer points than the Chiefs did this year. Chiefs
gave up four or nine, Philly give up three fifty eight.
(01:56:00):
But here's what really sticks out to me. This comes
from my Detroit Lions days, covering the Lions from Look
at It film on defense. All year, Kansas City has
featured a fore man front with two linebackers and heavy nickel.
How does that not playing in the hands of Philly's
rushing attack, who just rushed for four touchdowns against the
(01:56:22):
number one rushed defense in the National Football League two
weeks ago. Plus Kansas City ranks thirty one in red
zone defense. That's just two of the many reasons I
think the Eagles prevail in the Super Bowl. I will
not be hiding Monday after the game if I'm wrong,
but I've already backed the Eagles and I feel pretty
(01:56:43):
good about it. I look at the game at the
line of scrimmage and I think the Eagles can dominate
in those areas. Now, if the Chiefs stay with that
same defensive scheme, which I'm not sure they will, I
think you could see they move up five six men
in the box. They are very vulnerable in their defensive
backfield then, and that's it wation. And by the way,
the Chiefs throw sixty of the time. Who's got the
(01:57:03):
number one past defense in the National Football League the
Philadelphia Eagles. I could be wrong. I don't think Philadelphia
loses this game. I think they could be beat him
by touchdown. We shall see what happens. We also know
that we have ultimate respect for Andy Reid and Patrick
Mahomes and the game plan the Chiefs will bring. But
(01:57:24):
I don't buy into Jalen Hurts shoulder. Whether you can
throw deep or not remains to be seen. But I
will say this, with that receiving corps and the way
they're gonna run the game and open up passing lanes,
you can't tell me that he can't complete intermediate passes
and the slim Raper among the other group won't find
ways to run after the catch. Yes, I like the Eagles.
(01:57:46):
Background these airwaves Saturday night, eleven PM with a lot
more Super Bowl stuff the meantime. Keep it locked right here,
