(00:26):
The way tire buying should be. Remember the Great Earl Campbell.
Now there's a story one training camp that Earl Campbell
of the Houston Oilers, coached by the Great Bumphillips, finished
last in the one mile run during preseason conditioning, and
(00:48):
at the press conference, Bumphillips was asked, how do you
feel about your star running back finishing last in the
one mile run.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Phillips looked at the reporter and said.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Well, I guess if it's third and a mile, Earl
campbellen getting the ball. We're gonna get to the running
back stuff later, I promise the teeth gnashing one end.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
I will bring some semblance, a little order.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
To chaos as it comes, as it pertains to the
running back saga. But we begin, What a night for
the other football spelled futbol. Messy checks it in the
fifty fourth minute on nothing scores the goal scores the
winning goal. Remember how Laton had that goal in his
debut in LA a few years back. These guys are
(01:37):
for real, man, what a night for football fut bol?
Oh yeah, the World Cup is back is back on
as well? Looking for a clever word there. It didn't
come up with it, did I? The World Club A
good night, folks.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
You've been a great leads.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
The World Cup is back and it's about a thirty
day event here Lynn August twentieth and I get it.
A lot of the great unwashed. We're looking for the
women's national team to rack up a lopsided route against
Vietnam and their debutants. But they didn't get it. They
got a three nothing victory. It wasn't messy, see what
(02:20):
I did there. But it wasn't pretty either. It wasn't perfect,
But you take the w you take your three points.
Sophia Smith the brightest player on the field for the
women's team, but if you watched the game, it wasn't crisp.
They had chances that never material lines, broken plays, dumping
hopeful balls into the Vietnam's box. Many of the shots
(02:43):
r un convincing. You almost wonder it stretches if they
were playing down to their competition.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
Not sure. We'll find out.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Wednesday when they play at six pm Pacific against the Netherlands,
which would be a rematch from the championship of the
twenty nine twenty nineteen World Cup, and Netherlands will bring
a whole different type of vibe. We will get into
that a little bit later as well. Interesting how their manager,
(03:10):
the US manager of Vlato, Andonofsky, made some tweaks with
his starting lineup and he's sort of measuring the minutes
for Rose Level.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
And Meghan Rapino.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
And this is a month long tournament, right, so it's
a situation where I think you take tonight. Sophie Smith
looks like a little bit of a breakout star, at
least after one game.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
I think she admits they didn't play their best game.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Trinity Rodman had a few good plays, Alex Morgan had
a nice pass to Sophie Smith, but what stuck out
was her failure to convert on that penalty kick, which
is sort of an important juncture in the match at
the time. All right, so where do we go from here.
I don't know, home dinner, maybe a movie. The real
(03:57):
question on everybody's mind is is can the US repeat
three peat?
Speaker 3 (04:03):
No one's ever done that in the history of World
Cup soccer. Never.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
I believe Brazil the men's team, if I'm not mistaken,
one three of four like fifty six, sixty and sixty eight.
And I think a lot of folks feel it's easy
to assume the women. You know, it may be a
tougher road this year, but they're gonna get there. It's
gonna be a sure thing. They'll reach at milestone again.
They'll be the first team ever to win three straight
(04:30):
World Cups. And there you have it, and they are
plus two fifty if you are in a betting mode,
which really only propagates to about a twenty nine percent
probability of winning the whole thing. Now, having said that,
remember it's a loaded field, so you know, if you
juxtapost twenty nine percent versus the rest of the field
and a lot of good teams, that's still pretty good chances.
(04:53):
And you know, you but again, you're a little we're
all a little naive if you think they just show
up and you know, drop their boots, on the field
and win win this thing because there's always a chance
for injuries, there's always a chance for bad bounces, penalty
calls and dangibles. The Americans are very good, but there
are other teams as well. All right, yes they're plus
(05:15):
two fifty. But England, Spain, Germany, France, Sweden there right
behind him. And what I'm gonna do is kind of
make a case for while they why I think they
will win it, but I'll also make a case for
why they might not win it. I'm going to start
with why they might not win it to set expectations again,
start with injuries. Injuries have already badly impacted this team.
(05:39):
Back in April, Mallory Swanson before her marriage to cub
infielder Dansby Swanson, I remember her name was Mallory Pugh.
She suffered a torrent pateteloten and in her left knee
against Ireland. She by far at that point had become
the most dangerous offensive threat. She'd scored like seven goals
in six Gameslast year she had seven goals in fifteen
(06:02):
games and seven assists. That's tremendous production. She's not on
the roster.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Another rise of.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Attacker Katerina Macario. She suffered a knee injury and was
left off the team. And I don't know, I tell
you I don't recite these knee injuries and wrote manner
with any insensitivity. Trust me, My daughter played Division one
soccer UNLV. She tore her ACL three times, same knee
(06:29):
really curtailed everything. She made her Olympic development team in
two thousand and four. You fourteen, she was on her way.
She had sixty one offers, which chose you MV for
multiple reasons. Knee injuries kind of ruined it for her.
So I believe me. I've had empathy towards these young ladies,
but they are also big time players that really would
(06:51):
be contributing right at midfield. You also have a concern
in Rose Level, who was tremendous in the twenty nineteen
World Cup. Fast passless for penetration, passless for possession. She's
a great finisher, credible lane runner. She was injured against
Ireland as well, hasn't really played a whole hell of
(07:12):
a lot since before tonight, and you know they think
she's gonna be able to contribute as the tournament goes
on again. It ends August twentieth, but she don't know.
The biggest loss, though, I think for the team is
at their center back, Becky Sauerbrun. She was actually left
off the roster. She has a lingering foot injury, obviously
a foot bearing injury that just won't heal. And she's
(07:35):
thirty eight years old, but a tremendous steadying force in
the back line. Had hoped to be ready for the tournament,
and her timetable just wasn't going to cooperate. And even
if she was there, not one hundred percent, she would
have been a great presence as a leader, even in
the locker room, a great vibe, the whole deal. But look,
(07:55):
she's a center back, and she was very pragmatic. She goes,
you can't have a stack that can only play fifteen
minutes in the knockout round. It's just not gonna work.
This is a team that's in transition. Again, these are
all the reasons they might not win. No one's ever
three peeded. They have fourteen newcomers to the World Cup team.
Two years ago at the Tokyo Olympics, they didn't necessarily
(08:18):
blend the old and new generations that great. The team
finished third. Their coach started five different lineups, they didn't
really necessarily gel and there are whispers that coach Andonofski
could potentially be on the hot seat, which adds more
(08:40):
pressure to the situation. So look, you're gonna get the
Netherlands Wednesday, six pm. They're going to be far more difficult.
The Americans played them to a two to two draw
and Tokyo knocked them out on penalty kicks in a quarterfinal.
Then they beat Portugal one nothing in a very difficult
friendly two years ago. They have to play those two
(09:01):
teams the longest short of You know, I think the
Americans will advance from Group EE one way or the other.
But if they finished second the brackets, you know, they
could run into a difficult team.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
Right.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
They might face Sweden in the around of sixteen. Sweden's
kind of been America's kryptonite in the last few years.
They play a very cautious structure behind the ball style,
very much as frustrated the US.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
In the past.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
They create all kinds of counterattacking opportunities on turnovers. So
whether or not the Americans face Sweden, there's other potential
speed bumps. Europeans are loaded with talent England beat the
US two to one in a friendly last October. Germany
split with the US a couple of times. US barely
squeaked past France in the twenty nineteen World Cup two
(09:47):
one Australia. They have Sam kurb maybe the best player
in the world for these particular World Cup, this particular
World Cup tournament. And you got to remember one other thing.
Every opponent is going to bring their best against the
America because they want to beat the Americans. The Americans
on the women's side are the gold standard, even though
they only took the bronze in Tokyo.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
You get where I'm going.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
So those are the reasons why the US might not win.
Why might they win?
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Well?
Speaker 2 (10:14):
First and four months, First and foremost, the US does
still have more depth than any other team in New Zealand.
And you know, I'm not gonna name the roster, but
you'll hear the names, okay, even with first timers like
Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman and if you recognize that last name, yes,
she's the daughter of Dennis Rodman, Casey Murphy, Audrey Kingsbury.
(10:38):
They have a roster that's not only versatile, but they're deep.
And I think they will handle it versity, They will
handle challenges. Every player had kind of a different journey
to get to that point. They got a really good
mix of veterans and younger players, and they're still going
to have some power up front even without Swanson. You
got Alex Morgan, Sophia Smith who you saw tonight. You'll
(11:02):
have other young ladies coming on the bench. So depth
is key. But a lot of times stars are what
win this tournament. So there's gonna have to be some
individual brilliants. There's gonna have to be some experience in leadership.
I think Morgan and Rippino, as the tournament goes on,
their presence will be invaluable.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Right. They may not get.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
As many minutes as they got in the past, but
you know the truth of the matter is that they
know what it's like.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
They know what success looks like.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
In the World Cup, there's one you know, there's one
last thing. And you know people talk about being confident
versus cocky. I actually think this women's team has been
cocky for a decade. I actually I covered the Me
and Him team. I like them way better. They were cool.
This team is not cool. They're arrogant and it's it's
(11:56):
inherent and it's been traditional, and it's actually kind of
nerve them well. They strut their goal celebrations in the
past have pissed people off. Some of their postgame quotes
are not always very diplomatic. But the US team believes
they are the best, and they they braced the pressure
and they hate losing, you know, That's.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
What drove Michael Jordan.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Michael Jordan admitted he hated losing more than he liked winning,
so that matters.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
When you add it all up.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
It's hard for me to picture that's the Americans not
three peating, but I can't say I'm predicting it. It's
just hard for me to picture that. If that makes
any sense. I want to see what they look like
against the Netherlands, who will bring the same type of
defensive intensity that Vietnam did tonight. Vietnam really put forth
their best defensively, and I know the young ladies. Americans
(12:54):
put thirty shots on goal, but only about seven were
really quality scoring chances, a lot more off the tire
as it were, so we're often running. This is an
extremely fun time of year, and I'm already looking forward
to Wednesday night six pm Pacific, nine pm Eastern USA
versus the Netherlands.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
And if they win that.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Game, or can at least get a draw, they're gonna
get out of the They're gonna get out of the.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
They're opening round here, you know.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
And I would say that once you get into, you know,
the knockout round, it's win or go home. Their ability
to handle the pressure in those high leverage situations has
been impressive even if it didn't Mestion Tokyo. Uh, this
is this is kind of where they live. But it's
not a lock. It's not a lock. You gotta have it.
(13:42):
You got to have it. Play out Tonight show brought

Speaker 3 (13:56):
Bundlet's save it.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
Progressive dot Com coming up. The cameras are rolling, the
jets are in camp. Can't wait to see it now.
There is this odd narrative that's been floating around the
echo chamber. Is there a hard knocks curse? Is there
a hard knocks curse? I'll give the history of NFL
(14:20):
teams that have fared after appearing on the very popular
HBO show. I'm Bernie Fraddlewick Company, Live from the Las
Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tirac dot com studios.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
Keep it lock.
Speaker 2 (14:30):

All right, back on the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports

in a Las Vegas. Don't forget coming up top of
the hour twelve midnight Bernie's Trivia Game, Round two. The
game Ethan has created. We resume. Phone lines will open
at eleven forty five, eight seven, seven ninety nine on
Fox eight seven seven nine nine six six three sixty
(15:09):
nine Youth to put out the Round one standings earlier tonight.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
All right, So the.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
Cameras are rolling in New York and after all the
teeth gnashing, it appears the Jets have embraced this opportunity
to be on hard knocks.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
And I don't know why the.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
Jets aren't getting more love. Just keep Breese all healthy.
Have that defense performed the way it did last year
before the injuries. I mean, hell, you beat Buffalo, you
beat Miami with with with Zach Wilson a quarterback. I
would just say this that Rogers might damn well hate
be the missing link here. Get past all the weirdness
(15:44):
and the eccentricities and ayahuasca and I don't know, man,
it might right, you might be there right in front
of you. Okay, he's not going to throw an arm
punt at Jakwaski tard. I'll tell you that right now,
So put that in your pipe and smoke. But the
Jets are in camp. Hard Knocks is being filmed, and
(16:05):
this is a behind the scenes saga we'll get to sample.
I believe the first show that we'll get to see
I believe will be Tuesday, August second.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
I'm really looking forward to it now. I know that Robert.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Sala had expressed he was hopeful the NFL would not
choose the Jets for the program, but it became too obvious. Okay,
Sala is a good dude, though, But even when all
the cameras and production crew floating around and within the
team's facility. Is it going to be a distraction? YadA
YadA yah. I don't want to make it more difficult
for players. Obviously, the Jets are going to be a
lightning rod this year, as they have been in many years,
(16:41):
but this year more than ever. And you know why
be that as it may. It's a situation where I
think it's now the opportunity is being embraced as it.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
Should be now.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
One of the things that has floated into the ether
recently is the fact that no Hard Knocks team has
ever not only never.
Speaker 3 (17:07):
Won a Super Bowl, they've never even been to the
Super Bowl. Is in fact there a Hard Knocks curse?
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
You know, we're always looking for curses, the Sports Illustrated
cover curse, remember that one, the Madden curse? Right, I say, no,
I say a Hard Knocks curse? Is a Fagezi why?
There have been a total of eighteen teams that have
participated in the in the well now they have the
you know, the mid season version of the program. So
if we have to qualify this that the preseason version
(17:40):
of the program, Hard Knocks have been eighteen teams that
have participated. Eight of those teams. Almost half have gone
on to post winning records, and seven have actually.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
Made the playoffs. And I get it, no.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
One's ever won a Super Bowl, but no one's ever
even been to a super Bowl. But half the teams
had winning records and all just under half actually made
the playoffs. Now, those numbers might not seem great on
the surface, but let's give you some context.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
You got to remember the.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
NFL's criteria for selecting a Hard Knox participant. One of
the most important criteria is that any team that's made
the playoffs in the last two seasons can knop out
of the program. So you're typically getting teams that haven't
been in the playoffs recently.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
So what does this mean.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
Well, often the NFL's most successful teams, they're able to
avoid participating in Hard Knocks because of the role. Now,
there have been some quality franchises that have volunteered to
be on Hard Knocks Jerry Jones, but those are few
and far between. So it's somewhat impressive if we're being honest,
(18:46):
that seven of the eight teams have made the playoffs.
Since I just gave you what the rules are, but
and again I want to reiterate, no team has gone
to win a Super Bowl or gone to a Super Bowl,
and therein lies, you know, the foundation for the narrative
in the first place. But here's the situation. Coincidentally, not ironically,
(19:09):
irony is when the firehouse was burning down.
Speaker 3 (19:11):
This is a coincidence.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
The only team who actually made it to the AFC
Championship game that appeared on Hard Knocks were the New
York Jets.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
They got within one game all the Super Bowl who
lost to Pittsburgh. That was Rex Ryan squad.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
They were on the show in twenty ten and they
with the furthest in the playoffs that any Hard Knocks
participant has ever done. Then that was with Mark Sanchez
a quarterback. And so you see why I think I'm
kind of bullish on the Jets. It feels like an
Aaron Rodgers led team could enjoy that kind of success.
(19:48):
I realized the AFC is loaded. I think too many
people are poopooing Buffalo. They're going to be very good
again next year. They had a very unfortunate Tomorrow Hamlin situation.
They had to play back to back games in Detroit
because of weather. Season was disjointed, and now you've got
perhaps issues with Stefon Diggs, but they didn't go to
the Super Bowl with Stefon Diggs. So the debt the
(20:09):
Bills offensively and defensively are both.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
They're gonna be top ten, right, they deserve love, but
sort of the Jets.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
And I think the Jets, had they not had their injuries,
would have made the playoffs last year. And you saw
their quarterback room. I liked Mike White, you know, Zach
Wilson not so much. Al Woodhall's not walking through that door.
Google them all right. So here's what's interesting. How have
teams done?
Speaker 3 (20:35):
Overall?
Speaker 2 (20:36):
Teams participating in Hard Knocks in their history have posted
a cumulative record of one and one forty seven in
the regular season. They're four and seven in the postseason.
Those numbers are respectable, basically five hundred cumulatively in the
last twenty two years. So that means there's not really
(20:59):
any competitive advantage to appearing on the show.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
The numbers don't bear that out.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
The first year the Baltimore Ravens two thousand and one,
they were ten and six. Yeah, they lost to the
Steelers in the divisional round. They were coming off a
super Bowl, and then you know, you had some teams
not so great in the following few years and recently, well,
the Rams you've forgotten. In the COVID year they ended
up going ten and six. They lost to the Packers
(21:26):
in the divisional round. The following year the Cowboys went
twelve and five. They lost to the Niners in the
wildcard round. Thank you, Dak Prescott. My last year, the
lines were eight nine, but quitted themselves pretty well. So
what would the Jets.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
Do this year?
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Well, it remains to be seen, but I am a
firm belief there is no hard knocks curse coming up.
We dive back into the running backs situation, probably not
for the last time, but I want to add some
inflection because now July seventeenth is coming gone, and we're
(21:59):
reminded over and over and over and over again that
there's a downward spiral the value running backs. I don't agree.
I have a different take. I'll share it with you next,
But first let's go to a guy, Kevin Figures with
the latest.
Speaker 4 (22:12):
All right, Bernie in tim Usa one It's opener at
the Women's World Cup by the score of three to
Nilo over Vietnam on Friday night, Sophia Smith scoring a
couple of goals in the first half. Lindsay Horan score
at the other. Their next matchup will be against the
Netherlands on Wednesday. Coming up in about thirty minutes from
now give her take on FS one, it'll be a
Group C matchup between Zambia and Japan. And golf second
(22:34):
round at the Open Championship, American Brian Harmon shot a
six under sixty five and is ten under for the tournament.
He has a five stroke lead over Tommy Fleetwood, who
is at even par for the round. Scotti schefflerin brooks
kep Cup barely made the cut. They will kick off
third round action this morning around four am Eastern And
baseball showy Otani allowed four home runs but still got
(22:54):
the victory as the Angels beat Pittsburgh eight to five.
Kyle Tucker a couple of home runs for Houston in
six to four victory over the A's. Seattle beat Toronto
three to two, Dodgers hammering Texas eleven to five behind
a Freddie Freeman home run. Back to Bernie Fredo.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
Thanks Kevin, Welcome back, Bud.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
You were out last week, probably conquering the world right,
Molly wapping.
Speaker 3 (23:15):
The world try my best at Bernie. You know that's
all you can do, man, It's all you can do.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
So let me set this up because I have put
forth a narrative that I believe that rather than covec
about what's happening with running backs. And I'm not denying
that the salary scale has regressed in the past six years,
but I'd rather dive into the reasons why, because it's
not that I don't think running backs are devalued, and
(23:43):
it's not that I think they're so easily replaceable through
interchangeable I ever, I saw people going on Twitter using
my word, and that's fine with me because that's how
I feel about it. Remember, the game has become basketball
on turf. Why the evolution of athletes, the evolution of
creative offense is you put your playmakers out in space
one on one battles and put them on an island
(24:05):
and let the best athlete win. Spread the field when
you're one on one battles, And we now have basketball
on turf, largely because of the rule changes, but moreover
because of the evolution of athletes. You don't believe me, well,
go back and watch football from twenty five years ago
now linebackers run like defensive backs. Defensive ends run like linebackers.
(24:26):
Used to, these guys get sidelined to sideline. You got
to put your athletes in space. It can no longer
be three yards in a cloud of dust as such.
So now the game has become very quarterback centric. You
play the game through your quarterback. The best way to
win a ball game in the National Football League is
to operate from the pocket and complete passes. Now you
need you're running backs to run the ball too, and
(24:48):
pass protect and even catch the ball out of the
backfield like Sakwan Barkley did fifty seven balls he caught.
It's a complete player. But take a look at Buffalo,
a very prolific offense. They run their whole offense through
Josh Allen. Right, Devin Singletary was a stud.
Speaker 3 (25:03):
He's gone.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
They draft James Cook, He's not gonna get a heavy load.
They run the game through the quarterback. Secondly, you've simply
got a situation now where it's a supplying demand issue.
There are more running backs than there are jobs. You
have to consider that. And back to my interchangeable. You
may already know this, but there were two hundred and
fifty players picked ahead of Isaiah Pacheco, a seventh round
(25:27):
back out of Rutgers, before Kansas City said we'll take
him seventh round. Two hundred and fifty players picked ahead
of him. That did not stop Isaiah Pachecko from being
the leading rusher in the Super Bowl. You saw it
with your own eyes. Supply and demand. Talk to NFL executives.
They don't really believe they've been devalued. They're just an
(25:48):
imbalance of supplying demand, and they're interchangeable. Not the same
with edge rushers, not the same with quarterbacks, not the
same with elite wide receiver. As a matter of fact,
just four running backs have been selected in the first
round the past four drafts. There hasn't been a running
back taken higher than twenty fourth overall since twenty eighteen,
when the aforementioned New York Giants took the aforementioned Saquon
(26:09):
Barkley with the second pick.
Speaker 3 (26:11):
And let's take a look at that for just a second.
They say, you don't.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
Count anybody else's money, but I'm gonna make an exception
in this case because I understand everybody said Daniel Jones
got paid. We'll see how that works. Out this year.
I thought he did well last year unto Brian Dable,
but he didn't get top dollar. He got forty billion
top dollars, getting fifty two million and on the way up.
But running backs are counting other people's money because I'm
(26:38):
a Saquon Barkley fan. But there's reality, there's there's there
are objective truths, and there our personal feelings objectively and
it's my understanding, by the way, And I did not
confirm this to a second source, so I when I
share what I'm going to share, I don't know if
it's one hundred percent true because I didn't confirm with
a second source. I had heard Saquon was offered a
(27:00):
three year deal thirteen million per that would have put
three years thirty nine million.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
He turned it down.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
Now if that's true, somebody tweeted at me if you
if you know, please or if you know that's false,
tweet at me at Bernie Frattle. But it looks like
Barkley and he's going to be there week one, all right.
He's pissed off right now, he's bent. He's gonna sit
out part of training camp, maybe all training camp. He'll
be doing himself and the giants of favor. By doing that,
(27:29):
he's not showing anybody up, believe it or not, it's
not going to do a damn thing. And you know
it's certain your own Le'Veon bel jo. You know he
apologized earlier in the week.
Speaker 3 (27:39):
We'll get to that.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
I'm gonna I'll share that vignette with you toward the
end of the show. But here's my point. Let's assume
Barkley plays on the franchise tag at ten million. His
career earnings will then be after this year and he's
only twenty six. He turns twenty seven forty million, one
ninety four thousand dollars. Dalvin Cook, even if he doesn't
(28:01):
play this year, he will have earned thirty nine million,
one hundred and twenty five thousand dollars. Ezekiel Elliott seventy
one million and change. Add it all up, what does
that add up to? Oh nothing, one hundred and fifty
five million dollars. We're supposed to take up a collection
plate and sing the blues for these guys. I get
(28:22):
things to have a context, and I get they want
to get paid, and they want to get paid. Bat
More and Portman want to be rich and Richmond want
to be king and people in hell one ice water
and you're all out of luck, I guess right now.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
But the reality of it is, year after year we're.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Reminded of this downward spiral and right now, you know months,
Like quarterbacks, running backs are most valuable during the rookie
deals when their salaries are low and their production is
theoretically higher because they're fresh. But unlike quarterbacks, the position
is physically demanding, and so some of these guys never
make it to their second and third contracts. That's always
(29:00):
been the case. It's not the reason we're not being
paid right now. So what happened this last week? This
was the stark reminder On Monday, the Giants in Barkley
they did not agree on a long term deal before
the deadline, and Barkley's a two time pro bowler. Hill
earned ten point one million for this year if he
elects to play. Same goes for Josh Jacobs. And I
realized that Josh Jacobs led the NFL in rushing last
(29:23):
year sixteen hundred and fifty three yards.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
He's a hell of a player. What was it Raiders record? Again?
Speaker 2 (29:28):
So what are you gonna do? Tony Pollard. I believe him.
The Cowboys will agree on a deal. You'll see him back.
They didn't Monday, but I think they'll figure something out.
I actually take that back. Pollard always signed his tag, so
he'll play with no protest Jacobs in Barkley. We shall
see what we shall see. They both made no secret
(29:49):
of their displeasure. Remember Dalvin Cook twenty seven, he's still unemployed.
He had a productive year last year. Ezekiel Elliott, he
signed the long term deal in twenty nineteen, worth over
fifteen million per year.
Speaker 3 (30:02):
He's out of a job.
Speaker 2 (30:03):
Now why, I'm telling you it can be a blessing
and a curse to sign that big contract for the
team and the player.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
You know. Insert your own Todd Gurley joke right here.
Speaker 2 (30:18):
So Rising Tide usually lifts all bolts when it comes
to salaries. But for now, I understand that running backs,
for the reasons I just explained, are not being invited
to the party as it were. All right, So what's
gonna happen? How long are these guys.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
Gonna hold out?
Speaker 2 (30:37):
What are they really gonna do? Are they gonna show
up to camp? They won't lose any money if they
don't show up to camp. They only lose money if
they missed the regular season games. And I would say
Barkley and Jacobs have two choices. They can play under
the Tag, or they can get a job in Naple
Autoparts or take the year off. They can't negotiate a
(30:58):
new contract until next off season. Now again, I want
to give Barkley's flowers, two time Pro bowler leading rusher
for one of the best ground attacks last year in
the NFL. Jacob's first time Pro bowler led the NFL
in rushing that if they're not getting paid, most other
people aren't getting paid. Here's what's interesting, and he took
(31:18):
a left turn this week. Barkley's situation appears to be
the most contentious because as a deadline to franchise Tag
players approached, he sort of hit the open market, as
the Giants said, you know, and us took us case
to Twitter, and I guess he's taken the New York
Giants logo off of his Twitter account, and he didn't
like the fact that he was being portrayed as greedy
(31:38):
that got leaked to the media.
Speaker 3 (31:40):
By the way, I don't believe he's greedy.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
He wants what he wants. But there's reality. That's why
I said there are objective truths and personal feelings. I
don't think the man's being greedy. He wants what he wants.
He wanted at least twenty two million and guaranteed money,
which would be the combined value of this year's franchise
tag and potential tag in twenty twenty four, is part
of his new contract. But when the Giants decline to
meet his demands, Barkley says, I'm not reporting to camp.
Speaker 3 (32:05):
So there is a part of this.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
Narrative where running backs individually and collectively, I get it there.
They feel like they get chewed up and spit out,
and teams are increasing and hesitant to draft him in
the first round, so you limit your early career earnings.
Now they're refusing to award them with large second contracts.
Melvin Gordon finally signed today, but even he ran his
(32:28):
mouth says He says, running back is literally the worst
position to play in the NFL right now, especially for you, buddy,
because you fumble. You fumble more than Carter's has pills
for crying out loud. Maybe hold on to the ball
for once, but look, there are other running backs in
the league as well, Derrick Henry stud believing they need
him in the Titans. Interestingly enough, you may find this interesting,
(32:52):
and this only fuels the narrative as to whether or
not the value of running backs can be debated the
same way was debated ten years ago Christian McCaffrey left
the Carolina Panthers. The Carolina Panthers running attack got better.
The numbers don't lie, Jonathan Taylor spoke out last week,
(33:13):
so and again the narrative gets a little stupid. McCaffrey
called it criminal. The three of the best players in
the entire league re grounds position didn't get paid.
Speaker 3 (33:24):
Criminal. I thought you had to be smart to go
to Stanford. Don't talk like that.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
Okay, The long and short of it is this, these
guys are paid. They're not paid what they want to
be paid because they feel their disrespected. And that's where
we're at in this world. Poor Men want to be rich,
Richmond want to be king. The game has changed. It's
basketball on turf. You put athletes in space. Linebackers run
like dbs did twenty years ago. Defensive ends run like
(33:48):
linebackers did three yards and the cloud of dust doesn't
do it anymore. The game has run through the quarterback.
Things change. Everything changes in the world. We used to
fight wars with a single shot rifle. Things change. One
thing that never seems to change, although he did give
it four home runs tonight and he still got a
standing ovation, is the fact that Shoheio Tani continues to
(34:12):
put up ridiculous numbers that completely boggle the mind and
continues to compare favorably with the guy by the name
of Babe Ruth. Got to share a couple of those
with you. In about three minutes, the phone lines will
open up eight seven seven nine nine six six three
six ' nine eight seven seven ninety nine nine Fox
(34:34):
dial him up. Ethan will take your call. Bernie's Bunkin
Bets Backyard Bunking Bets Round two resumes tonight at midnight.
The game that Ethan created. He put out the stats
on Twitter earlier. So in a couple of minutes here
eleven forty five Pacific to forty five am Eastern eight
(34:54):
seven seven nine ninety six six three six nine eight
seven seven ninety nine, I'm Fox coming up Otani and Ruth.
Speaker 3 (35:02):
Are they joining it to him?
Speaker 5 (35:04):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (35:04):
Sure?
Speaker 6 (35:05):
Why?
Speaker 2 (35:05):
I think they just might be I'm Bernie Frattle, coming
to you live from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio, TIREC
dot Com Studios. Keep it locked right here. You're listening
to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 7 (35:17):
It's me three time pro bowler LeVar Arrington and I
couldn't be more excited to announce a podcast called Up
on Game?
Speaker 3 (35:24):
What is Up on Game?
Speaker 7 (35:25):
You asked, along with my fellow pro bowler TJ. Huschman
Zada and Super Bowl champion Yup, that's right, Plexico Birds.
You can only name a show with that type of
talent on it.
Speaker 8 (35:37):
Up on Game.
Speaker 7 (35:38):
We're going to be sharing our real life experiences loaded
with teachable moments. Listen to Up on Game with Me
LeVar Arrington, TJ. Huschman Zada, and Plexico Birds on the
iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts from.
Speaker 2 (35:57):
All right back in the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio,
Come you live from the TIREK dot Com studios here
in Las Vegas. Phone lines are open eight seven seven
nine nine six six three six nine eight seven seven
ninety nine on Fox Burning his Backyard bunkin Bets season
two Round two tonight coming up at midnight. We'll see
(36:22):
if Poppy can defend his championship.
Speaker 9 (36:25):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (36:26):
And this is the game Ethan created. You'll call in.
Of course, you'll get a chance to answer a trivia
question and then a chance to place a bet based
on the action and the and the contest that Ethan
puts forth eight seven seven nine nine six six three
six nine eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox don't
(36:46):
get shut out. Ethan will take the first six callers.
All right, The numbers for Otani and Ruth continue to
be eerily, eerily coincidental.
Speaker 3 (36:59):
And you you know my position.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
I've heard Jeff pass his speech, very crafted, very well
thought out, very cogent. It's theoretical, you know, trade him,
get a Hall, get a herschel Walker Hall.
Speaker 3 (37:09):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (37:10):
But you really can't compare trades like this in Major
League Baseball to the National Football League and or certainly
the NBA, because even if you get prospects, prospects may
never get to the big leagues. And I don't want
to go down that road. This is show business. I
just cannot see trading your show when you make every
earnest effort to keep this guy. And if at the
(37:31):
end you you know, the group think Echo Chambers losing
their mind, Well, you can't let him go for the
seventieth rap if they If that's where it ends up,
you live with it. But you don't want to be
Harry Frozy and Babe Ruth and trade him and for
no known in that and never live it down. When
they had the equal number of it bats and I
don't have that number. Babe Ruth is one hundred and
(37:52):
fifty ninth home run. Shohei Otani hit his one hundred
and sixtieth home run after each of them had pitched
ford and fifty five innings in the Major Leagues. Babe
Ruth had a one lost record on the mound of
thirty five and eighteen, Shoheo Tani thirty five and nineteen.
On Real by the Way Monday Night, Shohio Tani became
(38:15):
the fifth player since the year two thousand with thirty
five home runs in the team's first ninety five games.
Barry Bonds did it in twenty oh one, so did
Luis Gonzalez of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Aaron Judge did it
last year, and in two thirteen, Chris Davis did it
rarefied company. So we're not just talking Babe Ruth here.
(38:37):
Now we're talking Barry Bombs and Aaron Judge. Then Tuesday night,
Shoho Tani was one hit shy of the cycle for
the seventh time this season. The last time a player
missed the cycle by one hit seven times after only
ninety five games was Lugerig in nineteen thirty one. How
about one more for the road. Sho Yo Tani is
(38:59):
leading the league in true and home runs. If he
ends this season in topping both categories, have become the
fourth player in Major League Baseball to accomplish that feat.
The other three Willie Mays, Mickey Mannele, Jim, Rice Mays, Mantel,
Garrett Bonds, Aaron Judge, and Babe Ruth.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
That is the rarefied air.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
Shohey O Tani is in in only a sixty year
baseball after only ninety five games. Eight seven seven n
a not on Fox. Doll him up. The trivia game
begins again at midnight. Keep it locked right here. You're
listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 6 (39:40):

had two hundred points, which is great. Brandon from Hawaii
finished with two hundred points, and Poppy from San.
Speaker 8 (41:40):
Diego with a hundred.
Speaker 5 (41:41):
We got a full slate tonight, six people on the callboard.
Speaker 8 (41:45):
We start with sir scratch off.
Speaker 3 (41:48):
Here he answer scratch off. What's up, buddy?
Speaker 9 (41:52):
What's going on? Buddy? I'll tell you what Ethan man,
No fay, he just got it all going man. But
let me tell you a faster way. I promised to
respect this time. I've been listening this place for a
long time, and to show me a justice. I mean,
we're always on here, but anyway, the show got me
watching this for a long time listening with the Fellas.
So one day I finally got to call in and
(42:13):
hear talk to a Fellas with Big Leak's already gone,
but I was picking on him, and a guy called
him for Florida told Ben Mallard if Ben Mallard give
him a free ticket because he told off on me
calling on these stations. Another show, and I love it,
my head because I listened to this show for like
twelve hours of night.
Speaker 8 (42:30):
All right, thank you, all right, here we go.
Speaker 3 (42:32):
You ready for your question? Sir, scratch off?
Speaker 8 (42:35):
Listen to it, all right, sir scratch off, Here we go.
Speaker 5 (42:37):
Who has more Tennis Grand slams Venus or Serena Williams.
Speaker 9 (42:42):
Ooh, I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go, Serena.
Speaker 3 (42:48):
All right, nicely done.
Speaker 5 (42:50):
All Right, we're gonna go to your best bet. Your
best bet is in the MLB. The Dodgers will play
the Rangers tomorrow at one oh five Pacific, four oh
five Eastern. Will you be taking the Dodgers or the Rangers?
It is Miller for the Dodgers and Dunning for the Rangers.
Speaker 9 (43:06):
There's something lad My Dodger came last week. I finally
got rightned out. But I'm gonna I'm gonna.
Speaker 6 (43:10):
Go with Rangers.
Speaker 2 (43:12):
Well, I'll tell you, Bobby Miller, I can't go and
get some Dodgers right now. Man, they're hot in a
Phoenix parking lot and paying the asphalt.
Speaker 3 (43:20):
I'm going to Dodgers.
Speaker 9 (43:21):
I mean they are too, I mean they're pretty good too.
But the Dodgers, man, you never know what they're gonna do.
Speaker 2 (43:25):
Right, all right, Well that's true, Thanks sir, scratch off,
appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (43:28):
Man, get some rest.
Speaker 8 (43:32):
We got all right, we got Poppy from San Diego.
Speaker 6 (43:35):
Bobby, Hey, Verdy.
Speaker 3 (43:39):
All right, you ready to roll? Getting that trivia question? Ethan?
Speaker 8 (43:42):
All right, here we go, Poppy.
Speaker 5 (43:45):
How many World Cups have the USA women's team won
since the start of the tournament in nineteen ninety one?
And if you tell me the years, I'll give you
an extra one hundred points.
Speaker 1 (43:57):
Okay, I'm gonna go with so I know they won
last week nineteen.
Speaker 8 (44:06):
Unfortunate. Unfortunately it's not too Bernie.
Speaker 2 (44:09):
Well I covered I talked about this in my opening
monologue in nineteen ninety nine. The Me and Ham team
they won this current teams one crew, they're going for
a three peat, and I don't know the other year,
but I do know that they had won one World
Cup before Meam's team. So I'm gonna go with the
number of four titles.
Speaker 8 (44:27):
Beautiful.
Speaker 3 (44:28):
Great. I don't have the year.
Speaker 8 (44:32):
Fifteen and nineteen.
Speaker 2 (44:33):
I got yeah, no, ninety nine, fifteen and nineteen to
n new for sure it was. I just didn't know
about ninety one or I'd forgotten.
Speaker 3 (44:40):
All right, All.
Speaker 5 (44:41):
Good, alrighty the MLB uh, the Orioles will travel for
the second game to Tampa Bay tomorrow to play the
Rays for a one ten Pacific four to ten Eastern start.
Rodriguez will start for the Orioles. McClanahan will start for
the Rays. The over unders currently at eight. Who will
you be take? You be taking the over or the under?
Speaker 8 (45:02):
Poppy?
Speaker 6 (45:03):
Over under?
Speaker 2 (45:04):
Yeah, over under eight.
Speaker 9 (45:05):
They both have pitchers, you know, Baltimore Oriols.
Speaker 3 (45:08):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (45:08):
They're hot in the division with the Rays.
Speaker 9 (45:10):
And you know Rodriguez, he gives up a lot of
runs and m krannony.
Speaker 2 (45:13):
Gives up low.
Speaker 9 (45:14):
So I'm gonna go out to go with the over
eighty high scoring.
Speaker 8 (45:18):
All right, Arnie.
Speaker 2 (45:21):
You know what's interesting is Shean McClanahan has been almost
unhittable this year and Baltimore. Okay, I'm gonna go with
a hunch. I'm gonna go with the under So good luck, Poppy.
One of us gets to be right.
Speaker 5 (45:33):
Thank you've heard it, Thanks Poppy. All right, on to
Brandon from Hawaii. Brandon has been a consistent guy.
Speaker 2 (45:40):
Here, buddy, Hey, doing pretty good.
Speaker 6 (45:45):
He's getting closer to football.
Speaker 8 (45:47):
There you go, all right, Brandon, Here we go.
Speaker 5 (45:50):
Who is the name of the girl who scored two
goals for the USA women's soccer team tonight against Vietnam.
Speaker 9 (45:59):
Oh, take a guess to say Rappidolt.
Speaker 3 (46:03):
Not Megan.
Speaker 2 (46:04):
Rappano is actually younger a lot of Stanford Sophia.
Speaker 8 (46:07):
Smith, nice Bernie, all right, cool.
Speaker 2 (46:12):
Well, she's been a professional soccer player for a couple
of years now, so.
Speaker 5 (46:15):
Yeah, she's very good. I think she's really young. I
think she's like twenty two or something. Crazy, pretty incredible.
Speaker 3 (46:20):
All right.
Speaker 5 (46:21):
In the FIFA Women's World Cup, we have a five am,
eight a m Pacific game today. Actually we get the
matchup between China and Denmark. Denmark is currently minus one
and a half. Will you be taking China or Denmark?
China minus one and a half at Denmark plus one
and a half.
Speaker 9 (46:43):
Give me a Denmark plus one and a half.
Speaker 8 (46:45):
Denmark with the points, Bernie.
Speaker 2 (46:49):
I'm gonna take the goals well, China plus one and
a half. I think you'll see a defensive struggle before tonight.
A lot of these games were shutouts. There were one
nothing games in Zambia and Japan. They're not on the
board yet. I think team sometimes it starts slow. I
could see that game being closer than people realize. I
do expect Denmark to win, though, so it's a little
bit of a fish bed. But I'll take China plus
(47:10):
the goal and a half.
Speaker 8 (47:12):
Awesome, all right, Brandon, thanks for calling in.
Speaker 2 (47:13):
Thanks buddy, Thanks Brandon, Thanks all right.
Speaker 8 (47:17):
Next, we got Nathan from Florida. Nathan.
Speaker 6 (47:21):
Hello, all right, Nathan, I'm well.
Speaker 3 (47:24):
Thank you.
Speaker 8 (47:25):
All right, here we go, Nathan.
Speaker 5 (47:26):
I don't know if you've been watching the new Netflix
series that came out.
Speaker 8 (47:30):
It's called Quarterback.
Speaker 5 (47:32):
I personally think it's some of the best works Netflix
Sports has done or put out. I'm just curious, can
you name one of the three quarterbacks that are featured
in this series? If you give me all three, I'll
give you one hundred extra points.
Speaker 9 (47:46):
I don't have that to play.
Speaker 3 (47:48):
It's all to go with.
Speaker 6 (47:51):
Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 8 (47:53):
That's a great guess. But unfortunately now Bernie.
Speaker 2 (47:56):
So yeah, and it's been publicized pretty succinctly, but it's
a Marcus Mariota, Kirk Cousins and Patrick Mahomes and I
gotta tell you, they get into the weeds with these
guys pretty good. It's this, This has got legs, it's
it's a good show.
Speaker 5 (48:15):
Yeah, I definitely think so. It's pretty cool to see
what they're doing.
Speaker 8 (48:18):
All right.
Speaker 5 (48:19):
On to Best Bet Sunday and the FIFA's Women's World Cup.
We get Netherlands versus Portugal for a twelve thirty am start.
The Netherlands is currently minus one and a half. We'd
be taking the Netherlands minus one and a half or
Portugal plus one and a half.
Speaker 7 (48:33):
Nathan, uh Netherlands, all right, Ernie see, I'm gonna go
with the Netherlands as well.
Speaker 2 (48:40):
I think they're going to be extremely difficult to score against,
so I could I could see the Netherlands hanging that.
Speaker 5 (48:46):
Number, all right, both on the same team. That's awesome,
Thanks Nathan.
Speaker 3 (48:49):
Thanks Nathan, all right.
Speaker 8 (48:52):
Dave from Phoenix.
Speaker 2 (48:55):
Dave has been so stellar on this trivia stuff. Man,
what was your temperature in Phoenix today?
Speaker 3 (49:00):
Dave?
Speaker 6 (49:01):
Well, it was over one hundred and fifteen for I
believe this twenty second straight day, but probably about ten
more days.
Speaker 3 (49:08):
So you beat us.
Speaker 2 (49:09):
We were only one thirteen today, but we're supposed to
be one fifteen saturdays.
Speaker 9 (49:12):
So right now twon's after midnight.
Speaker 2 (49:17):
Yeah, it's one hundred here right on the nose here.
Speaker 5 (49:21):
Yeah, it's a little too hot. Eighty five in La
right now. It's still hot for us, maybe like seventy eight.
Speaker 2 (49:25):
I don't want to I want to say it was
high here today. I saw two fire hundrants fighting over
a dog.
Speaker 5 (49:31):
All right, here we go, best bet, our best our
trivia question. I think he's going to get this one right,
but you know, it just happens to fall on his
uh when he called in and the question I have
here for number five?
Speaker 8 (49:44):
So who is on which team is on.
Speaker 5 (49:46):
Hard knocks for the twenty twenty three preseason in the NFL?
Speaker 10 (49:51):
That would be your New York Jude.
Speaker 8 (49:54):
There you go, got it?
Speaker 3 (49:57):
All right?
Speaker 8 (49:57):
Great stuff?
Speaker 3 (49:58):
Dave?
Speaker 5 (49:59):
On two best bet it is the Braves versus the
Milwaukee Brewers. For the third matchup in their weekend series
on Sunday eleven am Pacific two p m. Eastern Braves
are minus one and a half. Brewers are plus one
and a half. It's elder for the Braves and is
Itarian for.
Speaker 8 (50:22):
Tehran. Yeah, for the Brewers. Who will you be taking?
Speaker 2 (50:27):
Okay, you're talking about the Sundays, Gay Sunday.
Speaker 3 (50:31):
And you got elder By. Yeah, but if.
Speaker 9 (50:37):
I take Atlanta, I've got to give a run and
a half.
Speaker 3 (50:41):
No, you don't have to.
Speaker 5 (50:44):
No, No, we're doing running out. We're doing line. Yeah,
we're doing one and a half.
Speaker 2 (50:48):
Okay, so you're doing the run line. That's important to
know because that's different.
Speaker 8 (50:51):
One and a half and plus one and a half
for the Brewers.
Speaker 3 (50:56):
Yeah, this is a hard one. But I'm gonna go
with the Raves.
Speaker 6 (51:00):
And figure out somehow get a bunch of runs and
win by more than one.
Speaker 3 (51:04):
All right, Well, it's interesting.
Speaker 2 (51:05):
See that's when you if you're gonna bet, you only
want to play lay the run and a half if
you're on the road, because you're gonna you're guaranteed that bat,
that ninth bat in the ninth inning, right, You're guaranteed
nine at bats. But so if you're trailing right, and
if you're trailing in the top of the eighth, you
get the picture. I don't know, man, Julio ty Iran
has been lights out uh lately. I know he's only
(51:28):
two and four. I'm gonna. I'm gonna the Brewers have
played great ball, by the way, and they'll pass two.
I'm gonna I'm gonna go with the Brewers. I'll take
the free run and a half.
Speaker 5 (51:37):
Thanks all right, awesome, Bernie, good luck, Thanks, Dave, good luck, Dave.
He thank you, Thank you all right, kerb from Florida. Kirk,
we appreciate you for calling in. You're currently our leader
with two hundred points.
Speaker 8 (51:49):
How you doing the night?
Speaker 11 (51:50):
Good?
Speaker 9 (51:52):
All right, I'm sorry I said, I said.
Speaker 8 (51:56):
Nathan, it's all right, don't worry about it.
Speaker 2 (51:58):
It's all right. He likes Nathan's out. By the way,
what part of Florida.
Speaker 3 (52:02):
In, Kurt?
Speaker 9 (52:04):
I think California or Bernie?
Speaker 3 (52:06):
Good night, folks. I haven't even been drinking.
Speaker 8 (52:08):
But you know what, that's my fault.
Speaker 5 (52:09):
I did text in Florida, my bad, Kurt, and I
rode on the standings California, so that you know, I
think I need some more coffee.
Speaker 3 (52:16):
What part of California are you from, Sanklimy. Oh, that's right.
Speaker 2 (52:20):
We talked about that last week, Sank Clementy Triton's yep.
Speaker 3 (52:23):
All right, let's roll. Let's roll people, let's roll.
Speaker 5 (52:26):
Here we go, Kurt, what is the date of the
first NFL game this season? I'll give you a hint.
It's in September and it's on a Thursday. You just
got to get the date for me.
Speaker 6 (52:37):
I'm going to guess September ninth, September ninth.
Speaker 2 (52:41):
Wells September seventh, Thursday. I got it, circle because my
Lions are seven point underdogs against the Chiefs and six
weeks from this Thursday. Can you believe it? The NFL
is back, the regular season.
Speaker 5 (52:55):
NFL is back, very exciting. All right, onto your best bat, Curt.
The US Women's FIFA World Cup is continuing this morning.
France will take on Jamaica at three am Pacific six
am Eastern. The over under is currently at four and
a half. Will you be taking the over or the
(53:16):
under the under?
Speaker 2 (53:18):
I'm taking the under as well.
Speaker 5 (53:21):
All right, awesome, we appreciate you for calling. Thanks great
great Bernie.
Speaker 2 (53:26):
All right, thanks to everybody six up, six down. We'll
head to around three next week. You don't get the
standings out and appreciate everybody's participation as we roll on.
Speaker 5 (53:39):
And Bernie, I want to give a quick update on
your stats because I haven't done that in a while,
because you also just went four for four or actually
five for five on your trivia, so great start, great stuff.
And you are currently forty two for forty eight on
the trivia all time, which is eighty eight percent. And
on best bets, I got yet for five twenty around
(54:01):
sixty nine seventy, so great job. And it's fun listening
to you get these right, and we carry on all.
Speaker 2 (54:09):
Right, very good, thanks to everybody, and obviously another week
in the books. We'll we'll see what the results are
for the bets over the weekend and we'll resume next
Saturday night eleven PM, well, eleven midnight, twelve midnight.
Speaker 3 (54:27):
What did I say?
Speaker 2 (54:28):
Eleven twelve midnight, I'm sorry, twelve midnight Pacific, three am Eastern.
Speaker 3 (54:33):
So there you have it.
Speaker 2 (54:34):

Green Bay had a linebacker. I followed this guy a
little because he was from Michigan. He didn't go to
(56:36):
University of Michigan, to a smaller school, and he'd had
some ups and downs, but he got to a point
a couple of years ago where he had proven he
was not just another NFL player. He was becoming a
very good, above average NFL linebacker. And this is a
guy that started out as a fourth round found his
way in the field. He was a ended up being
(56:59):
a free agent practice squad guy, and then he ended
up getting a thirty million dollar contract. And he turned
twenty eight, thirty million dollar free agent contract. He was
twenty eight, he was healthy. I'm talking about Blake Martinez,
and then he quit, which is his right. We've seen
(57:21):
people do this over the years, the forty nine ers,
They've had guys retire early. Barry Sanders retired before people
wanted him to. This is not new. But what Blake
Martinez quit to go do is where the story starts.
What does Blake Martinez do these days? He makes a
ton of money selling Pokemon cards. Yes, you heard that right.
(57:47):
Former Green Bay linebacker twenty eight years old, walked away
from a thirty million dollar free agent contract, fourth round pick,
worked his way into being a very good linebacker, quit
the game to sell Pomon cards. And it turns out
this is a very lucrative business, all right. And this
(58:08):
is a millennial thing. It's a millennial thing that certain
millennials know more than most folks. But I'm very familiar
with Pokemon cards. I back in the day, I got
some for my kids and they had binders full of
Pokemon cards. But unlike Blake Martinez, I didn't quit my
job and parlay this into a multimillion dollar business. Apparently,
(58:32):
Blake Martinez, you heard that right, has turned a side
hustle into a multi million dollar business after walking away
from the NFL. Believe it or not, Blake Martinez, you
know there's no saying nobody does anything by themselves. He's
the lone ranger at Tonto. You need a team. Blake
Martinez has hired a staff, a full time staff of
(58:55):
twenty employees, including a lady by the name of Marisius Sneath.
She's a college soccer player. She streams for Blake's Breaks
LLC in her off time. And what's interesting is the
individual profits off these cards and off of these various
deals that he engages in. Martinez off, you know, routinely
(59:19):
makes a six figure profit.
Speaker 3 (59:21):
So what's interesting.
Speaker 2 (59:23):
I'm sure you remember Pokemon cards, and it's there's a
bit of nostalgia.
Speaker 3 (59:28):
Here, for lack of a better term.
Speaker 2 (59:29):
A lot of these cards were made in the late
nineteen nineties in early two thousands. And if you have
an old and it's the right one Pokemon card that's
in pristine condition, you know, none of the corners can't
be bent and can't be faded. An old Pokemon card
and pristine condition, you can get almost up to a
(59:52):
million dollars for one card. Now, if you don't believe me,
and I think this has a been coded, Blake Martinez
recently sold a rare Pikachu illustrator card for six hundred
and seventy two thousand dollars. Pokemon cards. Now, the National
(01:00:13):
Sports Collector's Convention is going on, and my dear business partner,
Mike Burkers, no longer with us, basically started the National
Sports Collector's Convention. I was right by his side in
nineteen ninety one. I remember the Mantal Mickey Mantle card.
At one point the rookie Mantle card sold for five thousand.
It's probably well up to almost a million for a
Mammal card now. And of course the famous T two
(01:00:36):
is six on a Wagoner card, the most expensive card
all the time. These are baseball cards. Now we're talking
Pokemon cards. And his staff of twenty people, and you know,
led by Blake Martinez, I told you the Pikachu illustrator
sells for six hundred and seventy two thousand. His company's
pulled in twelve million dollars and they haven't been in
(01:00:57):
existence a full year yet.
Speaker 3 (01:01:01):
So there you have it.
Speaker 2 (01:01:02):
Blake Martinez, former Green Bay packer, current Pokemon mogul, you
can't make this stuff up, folks coming up. Major League
Baseball's rules have been a massive success. What now, let's
share it with you first, go back to our guy,
Kevin Figures with the latest all.
Speaker 3 (01:01:19):
Right, Bernie in.
Speaker 4 (01:01:20):
On Friday night, Team USA won its opening game at
the Women's World Cup by the score of three to
nil over Vietnam. It was their first matchup in group play.
They will take on the Netherlands on Wednesday night. Currently
on FS one in Group C play, Zambia and Japan
currently scoreless. In the thirtieth minute. There was a goal
that was taken off of the board under replay review
for Japan in the twenty first minute after it was
(01:01:42):
a termine that they were off sides. Major League Baseball,
Tasca hernandez ait Ay walk off RBI single, leading Seattle
to a three to two victory over Toronto. Shohel Tani
picked up the victory on the mound for the Angels
in an eight to five win over Pittsburgh. It was
the Dodgers eleven in Texas five, as the Rangers had
their six game winning streak snapped. Home runs Austin Riley
and Orlando Arcia helped lead the Braves to a six
(01:02:03):
to four victory over Milwaukee. You had victories for the Twins,
Guardians and Yankees, and golf Brian Harmon as a five
stroke lead over Tommy Fleetwood through two rounds at the
Open Championship, Jason DAAs seven strokes back, while Jordan Speed
his eight shots off the lead, and Lionel Messi scored
the game winning goal for Inter Miami in his MLS debut.
It was a two to one victory over a cruz Azul.
Back to Bernie Fredo, all right, thanks, Kevin.
Speaker 2 (01:02:26):
So Baseball is enjoying a tremendous renaissance right now. It's
eleven billion dollar industry. Average attendance is twenty eight thousand
per game. You're seeing sellouts right and left. You're seeing
athletic performances right and left. Matter of fact, two weeks ago,
we might have had the most electrifying sports bowman of
the year in a span of two pitches. The Sensation
in Cincinnati, who no one had ever heard of sixty
(01:02:48):
days ago, Ellide La Cruz. He's steal second and third.
Then his Brewers pitcher, Elvis Perguero, hesitated, Cruz stole home,
so he sold three bases in two pitches, and the
Reds announcer John Sadak, when completely nuts the home crowd
was deafening.
Speaker 1 (01:03:05):
He stole, he stole home.
Speaker 2 (01:03:06):
The most trillly man in baseball is still second, third
and home. There you have it, folks, Welcome to the
new and improved Major League Baseball. Back in March, many
reporters asked if Major League Baseballs proposed rule changes, which
obviously the pitch timer, bigger bases to spur more base dealing,
the ban on defensive shifts, what.
Speaker 3 (01:03:28):
Would that do?
Speaker 2 (01:03:29):
How would that affect baseball's watchability, not just in person
but on TV. Well, we're at the midway point. Basically,
we're a little past the midway point, but you know,
the All Star Game, we're closely in our rearview mirror.
The answer is an emphatic yes with an exclamation point.
This is not your boring old baseball that we've seen
(01:03:50):
in the last few years. The games are shorter and
they're absolutely turbo charged with more action. You've got more offense,
you've got more base dealing, you don't have as much
wasting time in the box, you don't have as much
fiddling around on the mound. Right, you don't have these
defensive shifts that are odd to look at and can
kill a rally. The pitch clock has been hailed as
(01:04:12):
the greatest invention since pizza, and with telecast running half
an hour shorter, all of a sudden, baseball is fun
again for the average fan. When day La Cruz stole
those three bases a couple of weeks ago, there are
people that got so emotional they actually it conjured up
(01:04:34):
images of the old films of legends like Jackie Robinson
stealing home because it was thrilling. It's athletic baseball and
Baseball's partners in Baseball's TV partners believe this is going
to continue and be even better in the playoffs. And
obviously the commissioner, Rob Manfred has beating this jesse. He says,
(01:04:55):
we're encouraged by the results of the rule changes and
now the improvements have led to a greater fan in game.
Speaker 3 (01:05:00):
Quote.
Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
When you see an electric athlete like Ellie Lacruz steal
three bases on two pitches and thrilling fashion, that is
what fans love to see, the kind of action on
the field we want to promote. So baseball has a
lot of TV partners and their viewership nationally, their live attendance,
it's trending upward tremendously. I knew baseball was never did
I never once believed it was Warner Brothers, Discovery Sports, TBS, ESPN, Fox.
(01:05:27):
They've been asking to create a game which produces more
offense for a long time, and now all of a sudden,
you got a cavalcade of players that are under twenty
five years old.
Speaker 3 (01:05:38):
That are electric.
Speaker 2 (01:05:39):
Dali La Cruz, Ronald Lecuna junior of the Braves, vlad
Gerreer junior who just run the who just won the
Hormone Derby, Julio Rodriguez, other Mariners. These are guys that
are putting butts in seats. There is an absolute renewed
interest in the sport.
Speaker 3 (01:05:55):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:05:55):
Part of it's because of the pitch clock. If you
slow the game down by thirty minutes, you've done is
you've increased the pace. Every few seconds there's going to
be action. So everything's better. Defense is better, offense is better,
pitching is better added up, and so the programmings, you know,
window is more favorable for fans as well. Numbers don't lie.
(01:06:17):
Now baseball is in eleven billion dollar industry, so it's
not it's not the Bacheter child people were making it
out to be. But the pitch clock I think was
the real game changer. This year's games are averaging two
hours and thirty eight minutes versus three hours and four
minutes last season, and this is on track for the
(01:06:38):
fastest games going all the way back to nineteen to
eighty four one games or two hours and thirty five minutes.
But again, it's the pace, the cumulative effect of pitchers
getting the ball and throwing it, batters getting in the box,
creating more action bit by bit. You know, there are
probably two hundred and forty pitches in an average Major
League game, and now you have to get rid of
(01:06:59):
the ball, you have to put the ball in play.
Speaker 3 (01:07:01):
So the acumulative effect.
Speaker 2 (01:07:03):
Of that added up here, save ten seconds here, fifteen
seconds here, is a half an hour per game. So
it's not Again, it's not just that the game is faster.
The pace of the game is more brisk, leading to
more action.
Speaker 3 (01:07:15):
Now, it's not perfect.
Speaker 2 (01:07:17):
There have been people complaining, some people complaining, but they're adjusting.
Major League Baseball is now averaging less than a half
a violation per game, and actually now we're to the
point where sixty percent of all games in Major League
Baseball don't have any violations. By either team. But when
you look at the product on the field, and this
is what excites fans, this is what excites TV executives.
(01:07:39):
Offensive stats, they're virtually up across the board. Batting averager
up eight points, home runs are up about one per game.
Stolen bases have arisen about half a stolen base per game.
Runs per game for both teams are up to over
nine last year that was just about.
Speaker 3 (01:07:56):
Eight and a half.
Speaker 2 (01:07:57):
The result, you've got a more compelling TV product by
almost every metric. TBS is averaging three hundred and thirty
eight thousand viewers over fourteen telecasts. That's up forty one
percent from last season. Tell me that does an execut
TV executive. The July fourth game between Showhey and the
Angels and the San Diego Padres pulled four hundred and
(01:08:17):
forty eight thousand viewers. That's just a regular regular season game.
ESPN center that Baseball holding steady from last year, averaging
about one point five million viewers over their fourteen telecasts.
But that's up nine percent from last year's record pace.
By the way, which they are you know MLBtv also
they're in terms of the minutes people log on to
(01:08:40):
watch they're up as well. On the advertising front. TBS
has reported their regular season sales are up twenty percent
the network. They've sold out commercial times for all their
games in the third quarter. And you've got top spending
categories restaurants, food, automobiles, retail, beverages, insurance, they're all on board.
Ange League Baseball says their sponsorship and merchandise sales they're
(01:09:03):
also headed to record levels. They're projecting a six percent
increase in sponsorship revenue and a fourteen percent boost in
sponsorship money. The league also made it clear that the
Revolution again wouldn't be televised if you include the World
Baseball Class. What do I mean by that? They didn't
have those rules in the World Baseball Class. Okay, they
(01:09:25):
didn't count that. Now on Baseball's social media accounts as well,
they're getting more views than ever. They're up seventy percent
from last year. People are paying attention to the game.
Then you've got gate receipts. Attendance is up almost nine
percent over last year to an average of twenty eight
eight to thirty two per game. It's almost twenty nineteen.
(01:09:45):
Think about that. That means the average team, not every team,
the average team's going to draw about two point four
million fans. I remember the days when if you drew
a million fans for the year, that was good. Now
it's a long time ago, but you've got about a
dozen fransranchises up over ten percent. Last year Father's Day
Game broke new records. But the real miracle is what's
(01:10:08):
happening is Baseball is looking at their future fan base
and the numbers don't lie. They are attracting younger fans.
Speaker 3 (01:10:17):
Which I knew they would.
Speaker 2 (01:10:18):
Kids play baseball. It's the most baseball and softball male
and female. It's the most youth active played sports in
the country. But what's interesting is now they're watching the
game on TV. Stats show that the viewership among fans
that are under thirty five years old is up fifteen
percent this season, and eighty six percent of people between
(01:10:40):
the age of eighteen and twenty four are more likely
to watch a Major League Baseball game due to the
rule changes than they ever have in the past. So
baseball flourishing on the field. It's putting viewers back right
in the driver's seat as it were.
Speaker 3 (01:10:57):
Now. One other things Major League.
Speaker 2 (01:10:59):
And their TV partner are looking for is more on
air interaction with their star players, and they've gotten that
this year. During the All Star Game a couple tuesdays ago,
which Fox covered the broadcast crew, they interviewed Shoe O, Tommy,
Mookie Bets, and Freddie Freeman during live play. During live play,
(01:11:19):
Bets is out right field, get ready and he's talking
during the game. Same with Freddy Freeman. But I had
to do a double take when I saw Nathan Eovaldi,
the American League pitcher. He's chatting with the announcers, getting
a sign going into his delivery and he's talking with
the announcers and he strikes out Sean Murphy, who's a
(01:11:42):
good hitter. He's I mean, are you kidding me? The
pitchers in the outfielders and then fielders, these are big
name guys. They're carrying on conversations while practicing the craft
in front of millions of people.
Speaker 3 (01:11:57):
So look the network.
Speaker 2 (01:12:00):
They got the virtual pitch clock, they got the umpcam,
they get the batter's I of you. You're seeing hunter
bylling our fastballs. Now, TBS is experimenting with earlier first
pitch times, more star driven game.
Speaker 3 (01:12:11):
Matchups, and who do they hire recently?
Speaker 2 (01:12:14):
Derek Jeter Derek Jeter puts butts in seats. He was
a Yankees captain, Hall of Famer, and all of a sudden,
now the pregame show is done on the act. He
got David Ortiz, Kevin Burkhardt, Alex Rodriguez, and now Derek Jeter.
Where has baseball struck out this year?
Speaker 3 (01:12:33):
Nowhere?
Speaker 2 (01:12:35):
And I'm not really a Rob Banfred fan, but he's
presiding over a game. And the truth of the matter
is that I think is as long as this carries
into the postseason, we know we have a winner. And
the reason I say baseball is still slightly concerned because
the World Series TV ratings have faded in the past
(01:12:58):
few years because baseball is considered currently a regionalized sport.
Matter of fact, the twenty twenty two World Series between
Houston and Philadelphia through the second small Saudi and sever
only twelve million viewers across the network right Fox. But
you know if you have to watch that, if teams
(01:13:19):
like Arizona Milwaukee or Minnesota, Miami or Texas they go
far into the playoffs, that could be a concern for
executives because they're not made considered major markets. But if
it ends up being the Dodgers, or the match of
the fillies of the Yankees, or you get a daily
Cruz from the Reds that people want to watch. Is
that could be the game saver in terms of the
(01:13:42):
World Series in the postseason, getting the same of the same,
you know, viewership growth that you're seeing in the regular season.
So where am I going with this? Baseball's real changes
are a success? What now they continue?
Speaker 5 (01:13:57):
When?
Speaker 2 (01:13:57):
See if it continues through the postsea coming up? Le'Veon
Bell spoke up this week and oh.
Speaker 3 (01:14:04):
By the way, quick update Northwestern football.
Speaker 2 (01:14:07):
I'm Bernie Fraddlework County Live the Las Vegas Fox Sports
Radio Tirack dot Com studios. Keep it locked right here.
You're listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
All right back on the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio,
coming you live from the Tirak dot Com studios here

(01:14:28):
six am Easter and want to remind everybody. Tonight's show
brought to you by Discover. At the end of your
first year, Discover credit cards automatically double all the cash
back you've earned. That's right, everything you've earned doubled seriously
see terms.
Speaker 3 (01:14:40):
Check it out for yourself.
Speaker 2 (01:14:41):
Discover dot com slash Match. So I mentioned earlier in
the show, I did not think Sa Kwon Barkley will
sit out. You may feel like it, you may get
an urge, but take a cue from former NFL running
back Le'Veon Bell, who was actually quite candid in public
(01:15:01):
this past week. Bell now regrets ever leaving the place
where his career started. He posted on a video on
social media. I think it was last week. In what
he did is he apologized to the people of Pittsburgh.
He apologized to all the Steeler fans and says now
that he has a chance to look back, hindsight's always
twenty twenty.
Speaker 3 (01:15:20):
He never should have left Pittsburgh. Quote.
Speaker 2 (01:15:24):
I never apologized to the fans for sitting out or
leaving the Steelers. That's what Le'Veon Bell said.
Speaker 3 (01:15:32):
Quote.
Speaker 2 (01:15:33):
I never apologized. So I want to say, I apologize
for leaving the best damn fans there is in this
damn world. I shouldn't have left. I apologized. I should
have never left. I apologize. That's my fault.
Speaker 3 (01:15:46):
It's on me.
Speaker 2 (01:15:48):
I believe I believe he's sincere. I believe that's authentic.
I don't believe he's grandstanding. I think he's had a
chance to reflect back, and I believe the Steelers offered
twenty eight million. Then he sat out a year, ended
up going to the Jets. It was never the same.
Bell spent his first five NFL seasons with the Steelers.
He was a two time first team All Pro. But
(01:16:08):
in twenty eighteen he says, hell with it, I'm sitting
out the entire season rather than signing the franchise tag,
and in twenty nineteen he signed a for the time,
it was less than I think he would have gotten
in Pittsburgh, but he signed what was a fairly lucrative
contract with the Jets. But he did not play well
and he was released during the second season. Then after
(01:16:30):
that he kind of bounced around between Kansas City and
Baltimore and the Buccaneers, and finally, after he was out
of the NFL, he dabbled in a little boxing and
even had a match against Adrian Peterson, and he took
two more boxing matches and I think he won, won
(01:16:50):
and lost one. So I don't think it ended a
wait for him the way it did. So kudos to
Le'Veon Bell for step it up. Finally, nine days after
Northwestern fired Pat Pat Fitzgerald, their coach, their hazing scandal
continues to blow up a little bit. We are it
is being reported allegedly that this spans the last thirty
(01:17:12):
years of football at Northwestern. A lot of these guys
have lawyered up with a very famous lawyer, and they
are alleging that the hazing culture that endured this past
year started back when Fitzgerald was a player in the nineties.
Speaker 3 (01:17:26):
That's what's being reported and alleged.
Speaker 2 (01:17:29):
There are a lot of former players that told the
Athletic that he didn't participate. But nonetheless, there were very
team versions of hazing long after it was you know,
popularized at the official training camp in Kenosha, Wisconsin. And
one of the examples was, for instance, players talked about
something called a loof a line, so there'd be naked
(01:17:51):
offensive linemen would block the way to the showers. And
you know, we talked about the game, the running game
where veteran players would dry hump them and it's gross,
it's not.
Speaker 3 (01:18:03):
Fun to hear.
Speaker 2 (01:18:04):
And players from the nineties, what's happening now? A lot
of these dudes are in their fifties, and they've expressed
remorse and how the culture evolved after they left. And
I guess along the short of it is where we
like it or not. I don't think this story's over.
There's going to be more to this story coming up.
So too bad for Northwestern football. It's a very proud institution.
(01:18:26):
Too bad for Pat Fitzgerald. You speak about not wanting
condemned a certain way. Boy, this was a rough ending
for a proud school.
Speaker 3 (01:18:35):
Coming up, Baseball might have a new idea.
Speaker 2 (01:18:38):
It's very clever. I'll share it with you. Keep it Locke.

it's funny how out of acorns can grow oaks. Out
of a simple conversation, something can blossom. And I begin
by invoking the names of Ken Griffy Junior, Albert Poolholz
and Jim Tomey.
Speaker 3 (01:21:27):
And David Ortiz.
Speaker 2 (01:21:29):
I'm not talking about an old timers game. I'm talking
about something that started with an innocent conversation with Ken
Griffy on the MLB Network and then all of a sudden.
Within a matter of a few days, it's grown into
an idea that has already reached the attention of baseball's
powers to be Could it happen? Yes, it could happen
(01:21:54):
because it feels like the legends want it to happen.
They don't simply want want it to happen so they
can swing a bat again. They want it to happen
so they can watch their other favorite legends swing the
bats again, just like we do. Remember Ken Griffy Junior
won the Home Run Derby in nineteen ninety four, nineteen
(01:22:16):
ninety eight, and nineteen ninety nine. So, all of a sudden,
two Mondays ago, when the Monday afternoon All Star Game
festivities in Seattle started, Albert Poolholes jokingly looked at Ken
Griffy Jr.
Speaker 3 (01:22:34):
Who was mulling around, and said, so you're gonna be
in the Home Run Derby tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:22:39):
Griffy joked back, Hey, if you do it, I'll do it.
Poolhole said, yeah, let's do it. Why not that all
of a sudden hmm, wait a minute, Wait a minute.
Then Griffy started to tell his story about the time
as he was a hitting coach for Team USA during
the World Baseball Classic, and all the players we're daring
(01:23:00):
him to get in the cage to say, can you
still do it?
Speaker 3 (01:23:03):
Can?
Speaker 2 (01:23:03):
Can you still do it? Griffy didn't want oky, I
can still do it. Finally had enough, so he called
his wife and said, do me a favor, bring me
my bat. And the bat had a name. It's called Lucille.
You know where it went from there. Okay, the players
saw Griffy with the bat, and the trash talk hit
(01:23:24):
another level. Mookie Bets joked, you ain't got it no more.
I bet you can't go deep in ten swings. Griffy said,
oh yeah, you'd lose that bet at age fifty three.
At age fifty three, Griffy gets into the cage and
goes deep.
Speaker 3 (01:23:44):
But hold on, there's more.
Speaker 2 (01:23:46):
The Seven keeps rolling along and MLB's networks. The one
of their hosts, Greg Amsinger, made the mistake of mentioning
that Pete Alonso had a chance to win that night
his third derby, which means he could tie gri if
he for the most Ever, if you don't think Ken
Griffy's competitive, if you don't think he's gonna let that
(01:24:07):
little innocent slip of the tongue go by unchallenged with
then you don't know Ken Griffy, and Griffy basically said, hey,
if I got a year to prepare for next year,
it's just me and Pete. I'll tell you right now,
it's like Rocky and Apollo ring the bell in an
empty cage, ding, ding, Let's go ha. Gota love Griffy
for the response and the reference, and am Singer said, whoa,
(01:24:30):
you got that much confidence? You really think you could
still win this. Griffy said, of course I do. And
then it felt like, well, all right, they're just you know,
they're talking this, nothing's gonna happen. But all of a sudden,
now you know, other players said, I jump.
Speaker 3 (01:24:48):
In there too.
Speaker 2 (01:24:50):
And Jim told me was a great guy who happened
to be watching this exchange from his home in Illinois.
By the way, Jim told me at six hundred and
twelve home runs in his career. He reaches for a cell,
He texts Amsinger. He says, wait a minute, if Griffy's
gonna get ready, how about if I jump in there too.
Speaker 3 (01:25:11):
All of a sudden, two.
Speaker 2 (01:25:12):
Baseball legends within five minutes say they would participate in
the home run Derby.
Speaker 3 (01:25:18):
The Next day, Albert.
Speaker 2 (01:25:19):
Poolholes hanging out in front of the MLB Network production
trailer and he's talking to Harold Reynolds and maybe start
talking about this, you know, home run Derby of dreams
right with Griffy, and he mentioned Tomy and pool Hole said,
wait a minute, I would do that in a hot second,
all of a sudden, you got three Legends. Then Poohles
(01:25:42):
walks outside, said, who's he run into, Big Poppy David
Ortiz and he lays it out. He says, Poppy, we've
just had a brainstorm.
Speaker 3 (01:25:51):
Guess what.
Speaker 2 (01:25:53):
Pool Holes walks back into the trailer and says, Poppy said,
he's all in two. See you got David Ortiz, Luis
or Albert Poolholes, Ken Griffy Jr.
Speaker 3 (01:26:05):
And Jim Tomey. That's just the start.
Speaker 2 (01:26:08):
Wait a minute, why couldn't you have a Legends home
run Derby.
Speaker 3 (01:26:14):
You've already got four guys right there that said they
would jump in. When would you do it? Simple?
Speaker 2 (01:26:20):
They're already talking about it. You play the Futures game.
Didn't you have the Legends home run Derby Saturday night
in primetime? And all of a sudden, like you're gonna
you know, you're gonna pack the place out. You put
up long chairs by the dugouts and the kids and
the futures kids and their families. They hang out on
the field to watch the home run Derby two and
(01:26:42):
the next thing you know, you've got another made for
TV event. Okay, what would the for what would the
format be? Well, there actually was a famous old home
run derby. Uh the event that was held in the fifties.
Speaker 6 (01:26:59):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:26:59):
It was in black and white. You can still find it.
You can find it on YouTube. Every now and then
they'll show one on Major League Baseball Channel. It was
kind of cheesy and it was really clunky, but it
was classic. And I talked to el Kayline about it once,
no joke. He said, Man, it was really great. You
fly to LA they put you up for a couple
hundred for a couple of days and you'd make fifteen
hundred bucks. True story, and it'd be like hal Kline
(01:27:22):
versus Hank Aaron and a guy named Mark Scott would
interview the guys in between, and they would get like
three outs, you know, and then if you know, anything
that wasn't the home run wasn't out right, but along
The short of it is, they don't want to half
fifty three year old guys. Fifty three year old guys
trying to take eighty swings in three minutes. Okay, all
kinds of stuff could go wrong there, but see that's
(01:27:46):
where that old fifties show hosted by Mark Scott would work.
And if you get a second, google it Google home
run derby Mark Scott, I'll guarantee it's coming up. You
take a couple of swings, your innings over, then there's
plenty of time and rest, and it's head to head.
Speaker 3 (01:27:59):
So all of us a sudden.
Speaker 2 (01:28:01):
You got guys that can have combined for over thirteen
hundred home runs. Hey, wait a minute, we'll do this, man,
we'll do this. As a matter of fact, you could
even hold a nine inning game and make it a team,
right like Homie Jim Tomy would hit in the first inning,
Griffy hitting the second, Pools in the third, and they
would skip three innings and they'd go back and forth
and there would be three guys, right, and then you
(01:28:22):
could have a four man team. The first eight innings,
each legend gets to hit twice. Then you huddle up
and decide which legend represents her team in the all
important ninth inning.
Speaker 3 (01:28:31):
They're just they're just you.
Speaker 2 (01:28:33):
Know, spitballing now, right, But this is a clever idea.
I think this might get legs and it might actually happen.
So you're by now you're asking yourself, well, how many
home runs would these guys hit? Well, look, they would
hit home runs. I promise you they would a lot.
Tomy hits six twelve. Now, he hasn't played Major League
(01:28:55):
baseball eleven years, and they're not going to hit forty
one home runs like who you are Rodriguez did this
year because they're not even going to get forty one swings.
And Griffy, you know, said he wouldn't. Honestly, if he's
gonna be serious, he would need four to six months
to get ready.
Speaker 3 (01:29:11):
But they got a year.
Speaker 2 (01:29:13):
And a reporter asked, came, Griffy, when's the last time
he jumped into the cage actually tried to hit home run?
Or he asked Jim Tomy. He says, A long time ago.
But I've hit my son's high school field. I've hit
home runs there just recently.
Speaker 3 (01:29:25):
But that was a high.
Speaker 2 (01:29:25):
School field, different situations, not something I practice every day.
So I guarantee it. Tony wouldn't embarrass himself. Neither with Pools,
neither would would With Griffy Jr. Neither would any.
Speaker 3 (01:29:39):
Neither would pop pig pot. They wouldn't do it right.
Speaker 2 (01:29:41):
But then all of a sudden the conversation started to
really take root. Like if you throw a pebble in
a pond and you see the ripples, who might who
else might want to do this? Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder,
Jason Giambi, Gianna Sispidis. Maybe you could even talk to
(01:30:02):
Mark McGuire. Maybe, depending on the whole city, you invite
a local legend. So I believe the All Star Game
is in Texas next year, so you could invite Adrian Beltray.
It's in Wrigley Field in twenty twenty five. Might you
(01:30:23):
invite Sammy Sosa? Okay, you're getting the picture now, right,
So legends themselves, they have said now they do want
to do this.
Speaker 3 (01:30:35):
That part will not be the hard part. All right.
Speaker 2 (01:30:39):
The Derby can be renewed. I don't know what you
do with the NBA Slam Dug contest. It was one
this year by a guy from the G League, Mac McClung.
And here's the deal because it's in their DNA. Well,
you're talking about you know, Griffy and Pooholes, Jim Tomey.
They're still a kid at heart who played the game.
(01:31:02):
You know, I played ball. It's been about well, actually
went to the batting cage last year and it was fine,
no sweat. Now, I was coaching a travel team in
Michigan back in the early two thousands, and you know,
at that point I hadn't played organized ball maybe Beer
(01:31:23):
league ball, but hadn't played organized ball in twenty years.
I used to get in the cage with the kids
and I had a kid, Jeff challenged me to a
home run contest.
Speaker 3 (01:31:30):
I beat him. And this was on a it was
on a high school field.
Speaker 2 (01:31:34):
And they were shocked. I hit three or four balls out.
But so these guys are good. They're not going to
have any trouble. I really, I really believe it. So
the real question is how does this go from you know,
conversation over the water cooler to having it be a reality.
I know they got to jump through hoops. They would
have to find sponsors, legalities would need to be tied up,
(01:31:56):
and you got to fit one more event into the
All Star schedule, and that's a that's a bit of
a challenge and there's gonna be a lot of red tape.
But see, ironically, what people would have thought would have
been the hardest part with just getting guys to compete,
and but they'll do it.
Speaker 3 (01:32:13):
They want to do it. They already want to call
the legends Derby. So you can't tell me.
Speaker 2 (01:32:19):
If you see Ortiz and Tommy and Griffy Junior and
Poolholes light up the way they did, they're onto something.
Speaker 3 (01:32:25):
They need it.
Speaker 2 (01:32:27):
I think it could work. This could be a lot
of fun. And as for the fans, absolutely, the fans.
Woody Allen said it best. Nostalgia is a trap. Fans
know what these guys did in their career, and it'd
be awesome to put this thing and make.
Speaker 3 (01:32:41):
It come to fruition.
Speaker 2 (01:32:42):
Okay, there's always going to be opportunities to repackage these,
you know, all star game festivities. And the fact that
this conversation started so innocently and blossomed and has now
gotten the ground swell where there's four guys that want
to do it and they're gonna look to recruit more
open happens. But that's just my opinion. We're gonna bring
(01:33:04):
in the crew. We got some baseball guys. You got
Kevin Crandall and Ethan. I want to get their thoughts.
Do they like the idea, would they watch it? Would
they have an open mind about it? And most importantly
you think the I'll have to make a prediction is
(01:33:25):
if they think this is really going to happen a
Legends home run derby? After one would like to see it,
See what the crew thinks. I have Bernie Fraddlewick Comedy
Life from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tyrock dot
Com Studios.
Speaker 3 (01:33:38):
Keep it locked, you'll see to the Bernie Fraddle Show
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:33:43):
All right, back on the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports
Radio Company Your Life from the Tyrock dot Com studios
here in Las Vegas. A lot of stuff to get to.
Could a Legends home run derby at the All Star
Game become a reality? What started as an innocent conversation
has now turned into four all time greats Ken Grafi Jr.
(01:34:05):
Albert Poole's, Jim Tomy and David Ortiz that are on board.
They want to do it, and this is just the beginning.
There's all kinds of new ideas that's just my opinion.
Let's bring in the crew. Kevin figures your thoughts on
the concept.
Speaker 3 (01:34:19):
Would you watch it? Do you like it? Do you
think it can never come to fruition?
Speaker 4 (01:34:23):
Well, if you have guys like this who are willing
to do it, I think it definitely could come to fruition.
And I believe there's a generation of baseball fan you know,
like myself, who grew up watching most of these guys,
all these guys really in their primes, who will love
to watch it. I don't believe that Baseball's All Star
weekend or week whatever you want to call it, has
gotten as stale as say as the NBA, but it
certainly can help to bring in, you know, something new,
(01:34:45):
a little bit of a new flavor, something different, a
different format, to also bring back maybe some of the
older audience who look sometimes I think it gets a
little bit mundane at times with the home run baby.
Speaker 3 (01:34:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:34:55):
So I don't think it's a bad move whatsoever. Major
League Baseball where to embrace this. I kind of hope
that they do real quickly.
Speaker 2 (01:35:03):
I'll tell you, Kevin, I honestly I started on the
home run derby back in two thousand and five.
Speaker 3 (01:35:08):
I covered that.
Speaker 2 (01:35:09):
It was at Kamerica Park in Detroit. Rob Parker was there,
Mark Wilson was there, our team and Bobby and Bray.
You won it, hit forty four home runs and wrecked
the second half of a season. I know Ethan's a
Philly guy, He's got to remember that. And after that,
I said, wait a minute, now, this is going to
discourage players from wanting to be in it.
Speaker 3 (01:35:30):
You screw up your swing, you can get hurt.
Speaker 2 (01:35:32):
All kinds of things, and it's lost tremendous luster for
me after that. And then they've changed the format now
so it's more amenable, but you're still taking a ton
of swings. And if they were to do this, you
would follow the format of that Goofield home run derby
back in the fifties, where you play like an inning
right once you have three outs, so you're not you
(01:35:53):
can't get that many swings unless you're hit that many
home runs.
Speaker 3 (01:35:58):
Do you see a downside Kevin in.
Speaker 4 (01:35:59):
This, well, I guess the downside would be and I
think Jim Tomany brought this up is trying to find
a format to where guys who are up there in
age who haven't don't have the stamina, having you know,
worked out like professional players in years and making sure
those guys don't end up getting injured. But there are
some concepts, team concepts to find a way to get
them to take fewer swings so they don't end up
injuring themselves. That will be the really because look, there's
(01:36:21):
no second half of the season for any of these guys.
Speaker 8 (01:36:24):
There's nothing to risk there.
Speaker 4 (01:36:25):
You just worry about guys who are in their forties
and fifties potentially getting hurt from taking a lot of hacks.
Speaker 2 (01:36:30):
What do you think about the team concept where you
would have two four man teams and they each bat
twice and then someone bats in the ninth inning, the
elected captain of bat nineteen or maybe four two man
teams and maybe you have like a team format where
they rotate so it's not only one guy's back, but
you still get to see the legends play. Let's face it,
that's the draw here. Whatdy Allen said it best nostalgia
(01:36:53):
as a trap. You get nostalgically to see these legends
play one more time.
Speaker 3 (01:36:57):
What do you think about a team concept?
Speaker 4 (01:36:58):
I'm all for and I think that's the best way
to do it because one thing you would hate to
see is one of these great legends end up getting
hurt because all of a sudden he's on a hot
streak and he gets ten straight home runs and then
on number eleven he pulls something. You know, nobody wants
to see that. So I think the best way to
do this would be a via team format like you described.
Speaker 2 (01:37:15):
I do think they get a sponsor, no problem, easily.
I could see this following the Futures game. Yeah, I
mean you really got to be a wont to follow
the Future's game. I do because of certain prospects, but
even I only watched two or three innings to get
get the gist. All right, crandall your thoughts on the
Legends home run derby.
Speaker 12 (01:37:35):
Well, I think it's gonna be a great idea, but
I think that for the Legends, they should have to
agree on it a year in advanced so by a
time oh.
Speaker 3 (01:37:45):
It's a good point they had hurt, he can't back.
Speaker 8 (01:37:47):
Out, can't back out.
Speaker 12 (01:37:48):
And then so around time period the All Star weekend
twenty twenty four, you already know by that time period
who's going to be available for the next year's teams.
And that way, guys in their forties forty five, they'll
have time to be able to train that time period.
You know, some guys going to need about a few months,
someone need up to a year. They haven't played in
(01:38:11):
a long time. But having a time period to be
able to train and had the team concept, they could
avoid injuries and have time for the trainding. So I
think it would add nostalgia. And also for these for
fans that their other fans that don't really watch as much,
(01:38:31):
they'll be more intrigued All Star weekend if they have
the home run derby for the Legends. And also for
younger generations that didn't see the kN Griffey's growing up,
they'll get to see that, you know, they help in
their primes. They'll still be intrigued and add more viewers.
Speaker 2 (01:38:46):
That's a good idea for a couple of reasons. And
if you think about it, we all know the All
Star Game is going to be in Texas next year, right,
and so there'll be a theme there and you know,
maybe Adrian Blitary is part of.
Speaker 3 (01:39:00):
It or something like that.
Speaker 2 (01:39:01):
The point is, if you know the teams and you
know the players, and they commit to it a year
in advance, not only can they formulate their strategies and
their teams and get in.
Speaker 3 (01:39:09):
Shape, but you can market it.
Speaker 2 (01:39:11):
So now you know next year, you know, brought to
you by so and so, you got the legends Olmer
on Derby and you know the players.
Speaker 9 (01:39:18):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:39:18):
I like that idea, and so hopefully I would say this, hopefully,
if they decide to do this, I hope they first
of all, Crandell, do you think they'll They'll get it done.
They'll figure out a way to ramro out this.
Speaker 3 (01:39:30):
Thing in there. They still got eleven months.
Speaker 12 (01:39:33):
Yes, I believe so. I think at this time it
will be nosed. They had some minim going on. They
had a great All Star weekend this time around. They'll
keep that going and make sure they add on to
that and have you in more viewership and more excitement
for next year.
Speaker 3 (01:39:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:39:47):
I think that they could at least even announced it
by the winter meetings in November December. It still gives
you eight months to do that and announce it and
promote it. And like you said, get the guys in shape.
That's a good idea. Ethan, you got the last word
on this, man. What are your thoughts?
Speaker 5 (01:40:03):
Yeah, I think it's an interesting idea. I think it'd
be good for the fans. That's what I was thinking
at first. Honestly, I'm not gonna be I'm gonna be
honest here. At first, when you brought this up, I
wasn't a big fan. I was like, you know, this
sounds ridiculous. But you know, after k Fig and crandall
gave their piece, you gave your little introduction, I'm like,
you know, I can buy into it.
Speaker 8 (01:40:26):
I think it'd be cool to see like players.
Speaker 5 (01:40:28):
From you know, my childhood or even before, come back
and take some hacks. I understand that whole training stuff
and all that good jazz before and after making sure
they're all right. But yeah, I think it'd be cool.
But that you know, I don't have like a too
strong opinion on it. I think I think it'd be
cool for the fans.
Speaker 2 (01:40:50):
Most importantly, what I get the most kick out of
is how this came out of nowhere. It started with
an innocent conversation and people Kim griffyd Junior and look, man,
it's in your DNA. That competitive juice never goes away.
I promise you that he hasn't gone away in my life.
And I didn't get to the Big League. So I
(01:41:12):
sure as hell hope these guys do this. This could
be just one of another many ideas that creates this
continued renaissance in baseball. And you know, I watched the
All Star Game. It's the best of the four All
Star Games because they actually played defense and even saw
the first inning. They're great catches. But since we now
see so many games and interleague play and there's three
(01:41:33):
hundred games, you know a year on the luster is gone.
Whereas you get all the All Stars together and the NBA,
they don't play any defense. In the NHL, same situation.
The Pro Bowl is basically canceled now. So along the
short of it is baseball is the last bashion. They
can make it a whole weekend. And I like the
idea coming up. Huge night in soccer, not just messy,
(01:41:53):
but of course the World Cup is underway and we
will bring you Chris Purfet's World of Soccer right after
we go to our guy Kevin Figures with the ladies.
Speaker 4 (01:42:02):
Well talking about the huge night in soccer highlighted by
the US women's national team. They began their quest for
a three peat at the World Cup, picking up a
three nail victory over Vietnam in their first match in
group play, Sophia Smith scoring a couple of goals in
the first half. Team USA outshot Vietnam twenty eight to nothing.
Their next opponent will be the Netherlands on Wednesday night.
We do have one game in progress on FS one.
(01:42:24):
Japan now a three toner lead over Zambia in the
sixty eighth minute. At the top of the hour on Fox,
England will take on Haiti. Major League Baseball Friday night,
Shoeyo Tiny struck out nine and allowed five runs and
an eight to five Angels win over Pittsburgh. Houston won
its third in a row with a victory over Oakland
six to four. Seattle walked off Toronto three to two.
Dodgers all over Texas eleven to five. Austin Riley went
(01:42:46):
deep for the fourth consecutive game as Atlanta defeated Milwaukee
six to four. The Yankees beat the Royals five to
four as Aaron Judge took batting practice prior to the game,
and a timeline for his potential return could be announced
as soon as this weekend. And golf third Round at
the US Open. Excuse me, Third Round at the Open Championship,
not the US Open or the British Open.
Speaker 8 (01:43:05):
Just to the Open underway.
Speaker 4 (01:43:07):
Ricky Fatheros, Scotty Cheffer, Adam Scott all just beginning their rounds.
Brian Harmon, the leader at ten under, won't hey off
until about ten thirty am Eastern time. He'll repair with
Tommy Fleetwood, who was five shots off the lead, back
to Bernie Fritdo.
Speaker 2 (01:43:19):
Evan and I have never understood where they feel so
feel the need to remove the name British.
Speaker 3 (01:43:25):
From the Open.
Speaker 8 (01:43:26):
So sensitive, huh so sensitive?
Speaker 2 (01:43:29):
All right, good stuff, buddy, all right, huge night in soccer,
the Women's World Cup. He's underweight. Well they three pete.
Well they got to w against Vietnam. It wasn't messy,
see what they did there, But it wasn't pretty either.
It's why at this time every week we bring you
Chris Burfetts World of.
Speaker 11 (01:43:45):
Soccer, the greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drum.
Speaker 1 (01:44:02):
It's all here in this report from the World of Soccer.
Speaker 2 (01:44:07):
Well Chris USA got there in w tonight. Sophie Smith
is all of a sudden the household name. But I
will tell you I do believe they need a lot
of improvement ahead of the Netherlands match next Wednesday.
Speaker 6 (01:44:19):
Yeah, I think their lineup is definitely something that really
needs a little bit of work work here. I know
there's already some criticisms coming. It feels like every time
we get a US manager, it's a lot of criticism
on how they're setting in the lineups.
Speaker 3 (01:44:32):
Right.
Speaker 6 (01:44:33):
That kind of shows that we're kind of a lecture
soccer country. If we're looking at end of ours Adanovsky
in the same way we were looking at Verhalter during
the men's World Cup. Here we are again with that.
But yeah, that you're absolutely right Sothia Smith. You know,
I know everyone loves their well, loves their Alex Morgan,
so bea. Smith is supposed to be that next generation
of amazing women's strikers. She got on the board twice
(01:44:56):
against Vietnam, Lindsay Horn with the clincher I believe in
thirteen minutes remaining in the game as well, good warm up. Again,
as we've talked about, this group is very little to
write home about, so it is kind of a tune
up here and just seeing what these young players can do.
But I agree, I don't think they've proven everything they
(01:45:17):
really need to prove against Vietnam, and they're gonna have
to work cut out for them to really show that
they're ready for the knockout stages here after about two
more matches, Chris.
Speaker 2 (01:45:27):
The thing for me, the question for the team heading
into this tournament, would their offensive attack be able to consistently.
Speaker 3 (01:45:35):
Generate quality chances.
Speaker 2 (01:45:36):
I know that they had like thirty shots on goal,
but really only six or seven were quality chances. And
I think the Netherlands is going to be more of
a big step up now than I thought earlier.
Speaker 5 (01:45:47):
Chris.
Speaker 2 (01:45:47):
And if I'm not mistaken, isn't this a rematch of
the World Cup final from twenty nineteen.
Speaker 6 (01:45:53):
I believe so. Either way, the Netherlands is always a
very good team they and I think you know you've
had your warm up here. This next one is going
to be a lot harder. As you say, Netherlands is
probably the one in the group that will give the
US the most trouble. I don't see, you know, I
don't really. I don't think Portugal is really high up
on the women's rankings. We do fear them in the
(01:46:16):
men's side, but they're They're women's team hasn't come as
far as some of the other countries. But again that
underpins this whole problem is that in the four years
since twenty nineteen, the rest of the world has been
catching up to the United States. Then not only does
the United States have a target on their back going
for a three p but there's a lot of other
nations out there who have really worked on their women's game.
A lot of their women have come through the NDWUFL
(01:46:38):
here in North America and through competitive professional leagues in
Europe as well. So it's it's a little bit more
of an even playing field.
Speaker 3 (01:46:48):
I field like they get out of their group.
Speaker 2 (01:46:50):
But would it surprise you if Netherlands walks away with
a draw or even upsets the United States Wednesday?
Speaker 6 (01:46:58):
I think I think the Netherlands could absolutely beat the
United States. There's still a team that's really trying to
find their identity here. I think a draw is if
always had to put money on anything, I would probably
say a draw here just because it feels like you
have to still working things out. And I think they
know they can comfortably handle Portugal, especially now with the
points over Vietnam. But you know they'll they'll have to
(01:47:18):
They'll have to play it smart. They'll have to get
some veteran leadership in there as well. I think that,
you know, they they leaned on a lot of the
young along with young young women in this match against Vietnam,
and now I you know, they're going to have to
get their veterans out there just to help them, just
to show them like, hey, you know, we we've beaten
the Netherlands before, we can do it again. Just follow
(01:47:39):
our lead. And that's where, you know, that's where Alex
Morgan and Megan or Pino are just going to have
to get involved with us.
Speaker 2 (01:47:44):
Skin They're going to get less minutes, I think, because
certainly we're Pino. But one of the things that sticks
out to me that I don't think I've paid enough
attention to. They're breaking in fourteen new players and remember
the only one the bronze. That women's team only won
the bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, and I think part
of the issue was meshing the old guard versus the
(01:48:04):
new young players. And I'm not so sure that's going
to happen overnight in this tournament.
Speaker 3 (01:48:08):
It's just a thought, your thoughts.
Speaker 6 (01:48:10):
No, it's been a project for the last you know,
for the last couple uh for the last calendar year.
Ever since the Olympics, they've been really working on it.
And again, I do think the emergence of someone like
Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman and some of these other
younger strikers, they do have their answer, like they have
their answer for the younger forwards are who are going here,
(01:48:31):
and they just need more time. They need more time
in the fire and to really go out there. And
again you saw that in Sophia Smith, and I think
the next stage is getting a lot more of those
younger players more involved and just getting like just I
think there is something too that this is for a
lot of them. This is their first time in the
World Cup. There's and they play it. They've been playing.
They played in a fantastic crowd in New Zealand, and
(01:48:52):
they're just going to have to get over the panic
of the bright lights and you know, they belong there,
the US belongs there, and they need to play like it.
Speaker 2 (01:49:01):
So finally, should we not be surprised the flair for
the dramatics. Why he's the greatest player in the world.
Look what Messi does at his debut in Miami Friday night.
Speaker 6 (01:49:11):
Bernie I know you say that sports the greatest samultane
earth on earth, and you can script everything except the outcome.
Please don't, but you have to. I don't know how
I can look at how that happened and not think
that there was a script involved, because it's too perfect.
Leonel Messi, who a week ago is wander year round
publics in Miami doing shopping himself, which by the way,
(01:49:33):
is just fantastic. And then you know, a massive turnout
for his date, for his appear at first appearance with
the club. And now here we are in the League's Cup,
cruz Azul is, you know, entering stoppage time one one
draw and it looks like this thing's going to go
to penalty kicks and Messi, who got on I didn't
play the full game. He gets on the fifty fourth minute, yes,
(01:49:57):
fifty fourth minute, so like he comes in about right
after halftime, roaring, applause and everything, and then he's he
looks like a men among boys out there. And again
Chris A Zool is not MLS. It's Lega MX, which
I mean le Ga MXE out on the same stage
as MLS. I think they're they're a little bit better
when it comes to their quality. But either way, he
(01:50:18):
was he was was trying to make some chances happen,
and it really happened until finally night about you know,
almost completely end of time, he gets tripped up free
kick and it's not even a screamer, Bernie. It was
just kind of a very.
Speaker 9 (01:50:31):
Casual task and drew it in.
Speaker 2 (01:50:32):
No, there's there's an art form to that. But so
maybe this scrip was we'll put him in the fifty
fourth minute, we'll call a sent piece for him, and
then he's got to put it.
Speaker 3 (01:50:41):
In that why not?
Speaker 6 (01:50:43):
Yeah, yeah, Well, and then it comes up to a
free kick and just over everyone's head to the corner
of the goal and the goal and the keeper can't
get it. It's literally a buzzer beat it's almost a
literally a buzzer beater goal. And because they lost two
minutes for stoppage time, so yeah, like there you go,
first game, first appearance, game winning goal. Unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (01:51:05):
All right, So we've got Denmark China later on this
morning England, Haiti, I really keep it.
Speaker 6 (01:51:13):
In England starting about an hour, I believe correct, you're.
Speaker 2 (01:51:16):
Correct, and Japan is having their way with Zambia. Ford
to nothing right now, and Spain took care of business
against Costa Rica. So Chris, we'll see in about twenty
four hours with obviously more highlights.
Speaker 6 (01:51:28):
Absolutely, it's been very fun so far, Bernie and I
really enjoyed the Australia and New Zealand openers too.
Speaker 2 (01:51:34):
Absolutely good stuff. This is going to be a very
competitive tournament, all right, Chris Purfetts World of Soccer. He'll
join us Saturday to thirty am Pacific five thirty am
Eastern as the Women's.
Speaker 3 (01:51:46):
World Cup is underway.
Speaker 2 (01:51:49):
Who knows, maybe Messi will deliver a baby Saturday in
Miami as the magic continues with Linel Messi.
Speaker 3 (01:51:55):
Who was the Who's the Hero?
Speaker 2 (01:51:58):
And the Men's World Cup December, which we also covered.
Coming up one last time, going to invoke the name
Victor when Biama. Now that the dust has settled in
the NBA Summer League is over, I'm gonna tell you
four things I think that Victor when Biana is going
to have to adjust if he's going to have success
(01:52:19):
in the NBA. I'm Bernie Frattle come to your live
from Las Vegas. Fox Sports Radio, Tact dot Com Studios.
Keep it locked to listen to the Bernie Frattle Show
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, wrapping it up on
the Bernie Frattle Show, come to you live from the
(01:52:40):
Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tract dot Com studio.
Speaker 3 (01:52:43):
For it go any further. I want to thank my
broadcast team.
Speaker 2 (01:52:46):
They've been with me since eleven pm Pacific on a
Friday night. That of course would be Mark Ramsey, our
technical producer, Kevin Figures, Molly wopping the up dates, Ethan
Miller turning all Dallas, keep Uschool together, and crandall crandall
joining us tonight making his Bernie Frattle Show a debut.
(01:53:08):
All right, the dust has settled, and you probably won't
hear Victor when Byama's name for at least fifteen minutes.
But now that the NBA Summer League is behind us
and we are often running for the remainder of the
summer and NBA teams won't be in camp for a
(01:53:29):
good another two months, I want to give you my
final thoughts on Victor win Bayama and my observations and
what do I think he needs to do. What are
going to be his biggest adjustments when he gets to
the actual NBA. Okay, the summer League is maybe twenty
(01:53:50):
percent of a game. And I agree that the league
he played it in France's competitive and physical and a
relative basis, but it's not the NBA. And I did
see Victor wen Bayama score thirty six points in a
G League game here in Las Vegas a few months back. Dude,
none of this matters. The NBA is a whole different
(01:54:11):
ballgame and he will find out just like everybody else
found out who made the jump. So these are the
biggest adjustments that I think Victor wen Byama has to make.
Speaker 3 (01:54:21):
One.
Speaker 2 (01:54:22):
He's gonna have to deal with the big, bad bodies
of some of the opponents he's going to go up against,
and with that, he will have issues defensively, rebounding, and
I think even playing defense, he frankly struggled to play
aggressively on the low block here in Vegas. And this
(01:54:43):
is against guys. Eighty percent of those guys.
Speaker 3 (01:54:46):
Won't make it in the NBA. What do you mean
playing in the NBA.
Speaker 2 (01:54:50):
So Victor wen Byama, less something drafted with changes, is
going to be a finesse player. So he's gonna have
to find a way to use his finesse to his advantage,
especially when it comes to if he monitored, if he
wanders into the low block and is expected to play
aggressively and actually gets some defensive rebounds while in the
low block. Secondly, Wan Bayama is going to have to
(01:55:13):
make an adjustment when it comes to dealing with ballhawking defenders.
Wemby he likes to handle the ball. He's good at
handling the ball. He likes to make plays for himself.
He likes to make plays for others. But during the
Summer League, multiple times in just the two games he played,
Wemby lost the ball in traffic. So if being a
(01:55:36):
playmaker and handling the ball like a guard is going
to be a permanent part of his game and not
something that spurs, you know, only allow him to do
part of the time, Wemby's got to get much better
in dribbling the ball, handling the ball in traffic because
he lost the ball a lot. Three, He's going to
(01:56:00):
have to understand that playing perimeter defense in the in
the NBA is much more difficult that it is in
France or the G League or the NBA Summer League.
Defending wings in this man's NBA is such a hard task.
It's probably the hardest task of any defender in the NBA.
(01:56:21):
Teams are going to try to pull Wenby from the
paint in switching situations. And he may have an eight
foot wingspan, but his length is not going to be
enough to stop players just on his length. We saw
it in his debut against the Charlotte Hornets. There were
a couple of soft closeouts by Wemby and what that
did does that set Brandon Miller for outside shots that
(01:56:43):
he knocked down, caught the ball in a rhythm and
got rid of it quick. So if Wenby is going
to be the defensive force that everybody tells us he's
going to be, again, perimeter defense is going to be
in area he's going to need to improve. These are
non indictments, These are not criticisms, These are observations every
player has to evolve. Finally, I mentioned it's a minute
(01:57:05):
ago defensive rebounding. Wenby averaged ten rebounds in the two
games he played in the Summer League. So what what
Wenby struggled with was the inability to locate the ball
off the rim and then box out smaller players. And frankly,
if I'm being honest, at times his reactions were just
a tick slower that other players on the court. And
(01:57:26):
remember this is the NBA Summer League. Now can Wemby
make all these adjustments? Well, why not? They're telling us
he's a transcendent generational player. So he'll have to learn
how to deal with the big bodies. He'll have to
learn how to defensively rebound, and he's going to have
to learn with you know, handling, learn how to handle
(01:57:47):
the ball in traffic so that the defenders who hawk
the ball won't be able to take it from him.
He's going to realize that, you know, playing perimeter defense
and defending wings in the NBA is probably the toughest
thing to do. And when he closes out on shooters,
they catch and release a lot quicker than they do
in the Summer League, or in France or in the
G League. And again, his reactions at times a tick
(01:58:10):
slower than other players in the summer league. And that
was just the summer league. These are not indictments, they're
just observations. I'm looking forward to watching Wemby just like
you are. But I can wait a couple months. I'm
not in that bigger hurry yet. It's gonna do it
for the Bernie Frattle Show back on these zero waves
Saturday night at eleven pm. Keep it locked up next
(01:58:30):
to the great Anthony Gargano and Fox Sports Radio
