Speaker 1 (00:01):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio. Well, that's right, you
heard the man. It'satsime Away. My name is Bernie Frattle.

(00:22):
com the way tire buying should be. It's amazing how
fast the sports life comes at you. It wasn't that
long ago. We were told Jimmy g even though he'd
won seventy five percent of his games and got into
a Super Bowl, he was just a game manager. Enter
Trey Lance a game breaker. But it was all theoretical.

(00:46):
And if you follow my tweets over the years and
don't take it personal, I just don't think Trey Lance
is a major league quarterback. As a matter of fact,
it's been misreported Tree Lance is not QB three in
San Francisco. He's QB four behind Brandon Allen. Now he's
on his way to Dallas, and I wish him well
because he's still got plenty of time to live up

(01:07):
to the hype and from everything I understand he's a
hard working guy and a good guy, and so hey,
the cream always rises, so he's still gonna have his chance.
The sports world comes at you fast. What was it
twenty six days ago? The Angels decided to make a

(01:28):
decision something I absolutely respect. Tip my cat a cap too.
They said, no, no, no, no, We're pushing our chips
to the center. We're going for it. We're not only
not going to trade Otani, he doesn't want us to
trade him this year, but we're gonna go out and
get some help. And it's been unreal what's happened to

(01:49):
the Angels since then? Every time you turn around, the
lead at the end of the tunnel is just another
oncoming train. And now, just like that, o Toanni's magical season,
his historic season, the one they say it's too good
to be true. It probably is. And it was the
quote arm fatigue that kept him out for the last

(02:10):
couple of weeks in terms of pitching, caused him to
leave his start Wednesday after one of the third innings. Well,
it turned out there was a little bit more nefarious
injury than they knew. A tear in the ulnar collateral
liignment of his right elbow. He's done pitching in twenty
twenty three. Fortunately, he was back in the lineup for

(02:32):
the Angels for game two of Wednesday's doubleheader, so maybe
he'll be able to hit the remainder of the year,
something he's done before. For the record, he was even
an outfielder in Japan. The truth of the matter is,
we don't know what's gonna happen here. They're gonna take
it day by day. And it's been reported he's gonna
get Tommy John surgery. We don't know that, all right.

(02:56):
Here's why, Welltani is going to get a second opinion.
There are a couple of other procedures that can be done.
Rich Hill, who's now pitching into his sixties in the
major leagues. I remember when he pitched at University of Michigan,
you know, back in the nineties. Was there. He had
a procedure called an internal brace procedure. There are other

(03:20):
non surgical means. Masahiro Tanaka was able to avoid Tommy
John surgery. But if Otani does need Tommy John surgery,
it'll be the second time he's gotten it. Matter of fact,
October first to be the five year anniversary, and it
was a long recovery. He didn't pitch in twenty nineteen,
and it was a lingering issue in twenty twenty when
he only made two starts. So Otani's injury is bad enough,

(03:44):
but it raises a bunch of other questions. The Angels
are they just completely snaked? But yeah, very I don't know.
I can't explain this. They're nine to eighteen since July
twenty sixth, when they decided to take Otani off the
trade market and go on a playoff push. There are
almost eleven games out of the wild card race. And

(04:06):
if you believe you know, the analytic websites like fangrafts,
they have a zero percent chance of making the playoffs.
Now I'll buy that. I've seen crazy comebacks before. We're
not even in the labor day yet, but look, you
know I wouldn't hold my breath. You get you get
the drift. Okay. I'm not suggesting anybody go out there
shoot babies at the moon or make a you know,

(04:26):
akneedle in a haystack. Bet this off. This Angel offense,
even with trot back, they just can't. Again, they couldn't
score in a women's prison with a fifth full of fifties.
They just can't do it. The question also, these are
the Angels potentially snaked it for the future. We don't know.
We don't know everybody. You know, everybody's got their opinions
to going to Seattle, going to Boston, going to New York, going,

(04:49):
you know, going to the Dodgers. Oh yeah, I see,
they're just waiting for him. You don't know anything. I
do know he likes very much playing for the Angels,
and I do not know he likes very much living
in southern California. And before this injury, I was giving
him a sixty percent chance he stays with the Angels,
and I still think he will get Will he get
six or seven hundred million or whatever? No, probably not.

(05:11):
But remember this is an international superstar, an elite talent
at transcendent talent, who also has incredible star quality, and
he played right field in Japan. So if he ever
pitches again, he's gonna be a great everyday player. I
believe maybe they bring him out of the pen, or
maybe he come back, comes back and make fools out
of all of us in two years from now, he's
winning twenty games. We don't know how about Otani's MVP chances.

(05:35):
I still think he's I think he's the favorite to
win it. He'll still remain the favorite to win it.
He's dominating. It's theoretically possible to somebody jumping and jumping
Otani because of this UCL injury, like maybe a Kyler
Tucker from Houston. But it's a long shot because there's
really no precedent for a player, even on a bad team,

(05:56):
to win the MVP just because he his his season's
gotten cut short right without, let you know, bump to go.
This is also a rough deal for Major League Baseball
in general and Major League fans. I believe Rob Manfred.
You know, he's probably not going to sleep well tonight.

(06:18):
He I mean, look what a Towani he's done for
the game. It's no fun when any good player gets
bad news, much less when you've got an international superstar,
transcendent player that you see once a century, who's hit
one hundred and seventy one home runs in past three seasons. Hope,
by the way, in the past three seasons, struck out
five hundred and forty two batters. Babe Ruth never won

(06:39):
struck out more than three batters in a season that
he hit thirty homers. That's true. This is what's making
what was Tani's doing so incredible. He's doing them both
at the same time. I get it, Ruth. You know
he won one hundred games, he had a microscopic and
ari in the World Series, But when he stopped pitching
and started hitting, he didn't do both at the same time. Well,
Tani forty four home runs this year, and you know,

(07:01):
had he not got hurt, hypothetically, theoretically he had a
shot at hitting sixty sixty one, sixty two, No, two
ways about it. It also raises another question, what about
the future of two way stars. Now, this is nothing new.
If you're a baseball fan or a start, you'll remember
Brook's keishnik out of the University of Texas. He hit

(07:22):
and he pitched, and he got to the big leagues
with the Cubs. I think he did a little of both.
The only this has been tried before, This was done
when I was in college. No one can do it.
That's why it's not done. Not because no one thought
of it or no one's tried it. No one can
do it, much less do it the way show Hail
Tani's doing it. So we've got a fair question. Now,

(07:46):
does this put a damper on the future even if
you have a player like Otani who can do this?
Did you know that in the recent Major League Baseball Draft,
which was around July fourth, there were eight players drafted
this year that were actually two way prospects, including a
guy named Bryce Eldridge who's already been labeled quote the

(08:09):
American Otani. He was the sixteenth overall pick by the
San Francisco Giants. Giants also took another guy last year
named Reggie Crawford. He's also a two way player because Pete. Look,
people have said, if shohey Otani can do it, why
don't we find out if someone else can. Again, we're

(08:30):
not reinventing the wheel here. They've tried this, people have
tried it. It's obvious Otani could do it, but it's
even he's human. This is his second arm injury now,
and I understand he's had armed fatigue all year. And
you know he got to the United States in twenty sixteen.
Take a year or two after that deal in sixty minutes,

(08:52):
but twenty sixteen was his only season as a full
time hitting and pitching star in Japan. He was not
able to replicate that when he got to the US
in twenty one or twenty two, and he could even
make it to the end of twenty eighteen. So in
fairness also he calls to attention how you know, even

(09:13):
Babe Ruth was truly never a full time two way
star because he was a great pitcher and then a
great hit. So I don't know what this does to
the future of this Now, in the evento Tony does
go a second or undergo a second Tommy John surgery,
teams will have every right to treat his pitching arm
as well toxic. You just don't know what you're getting.

(09:36):
He would join a list of pictures that I mean
a short list of pictures who've had Tommy John surgeries,
and none of them really had success. Maybe you could
say Jameson Talon with the Chicago Cubs. He ended up
getting a sixty eight million dollars deal, but if you've

(09:57):
noticed his CIRA, it's just under six. So look, sports
come at you fast, the storylines come at you fast.
We've got an absolute jam packs children night. We're gonna
get to everything. But the Otani thing hits hard because
it's been a feel good story and unfortunately. As a

Speaker 3 (12:21):
Oh are you buddy, Bernie. I didn't know people were
awake this time of the night, but pleasure to be
on and whenever I am up, I always enjoy listening
to your show.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
Well, I'm gonna take full blame, Ralph, I should have
had you on a long time ago. I take full blame.
And when you start talking the million plus listeners, we
do have across six hundred billions around the country in
serious sex, im eighty three are going to know exactly why.
And before I dive heavily into the great data, you
have quick question, Ralph. There's a new rule in college football.
They're not going to stop the clock on first down

(12:55):
until two minutes before the half and two minutes in
the fourth quarter. In fact, any substantive change with respect
to totals or markets in line setting.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
You know, I've talked to a few guys that I respect,
and we really thought it might be a an eight
to ten percent change on the totals early. We'll see
how those adjustments go. Vegas didn't make those adjustments. I
did not jump on any week one unders because of that.
But in my mind that would be the max about

(13:26):
an eight percent, which seems pretty high, But I think
the eight percent applies more to running teams, those teams
that can grind out those first downs. The past teams
are still going to move at their same pace, They're
still going to get out of bounds, they're still going
to reset their lineup. So perhaps the teams, the option teams,
the run heavy teams, we may see lower totals as

(13:48):
the season progresses.

Speaker 1 (13:50):
Yeah, well said, we have to wait and see how
it plays out, all right. One of the great things
Ralph Michaels does. Anybody can get on the air and
give picks, but Rolf is superb and sharing with folks
some of the things experts do as they prepared and
how they analyze data. And ralf we're always talking about
in college football, how many returning starters. There's returning starters,

(14:12):
there's returning production. And interestingly enough, you have a rather
unique approach with respect to how you evaluate returning starters.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
Let me just run down some of the top returning
starting teams this year. The season's going to start. You
probably know these teams. I just want to run down
and then show some differences. South Alabama the only team
that returns eighteen starters this year, Kansas Miami of Ohio
returned seventeen. There are about ten or twelve teams that
return sixteen starters, so very healthy amounts. On the flip side,

(14:48):
of course, if you don't know Colorado's only returning three
starters by now, you're not a college football fan. Kent
State has five, Cincinnati and Stanford and UAB all have six,
and then E Carolina, Indiana and Texas State have seven.
There's a slew that have eight and nine. But that
gives you the top and the bottom of those. The

(15:09):
one thing I want to point out the most important
factor for those at the top of the list and
those at the bottom of.

Speaker 4 (15:15):
This I go right to the O line.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
The O line every coach will tell you takes the
longest period of time to gel, takes the longest adjustment,
takes two or three years into the process to get
the wheels rolling where your backups can turn into starters.
And a couple teams I want to point out, Texas
A and M and Texas both return all five offensive linemen.

(15:40):
Kent State, UAB and Texas State all return zero returning
starters on the offensive line.

Speaker 1 (15:50):
That's very interesting to know because there's a lotre on
Texas this year, and I don't have faith in in
Steve Sarkis and he's never won ten games. Would you
bring up a great point that returning starting lineup with
respect to the offensive line as he headed into Obama
is going to be huge. Now, Ralph, you're one of
the few guys that does a great job of making
the distinction between not just returning starters, but returning production.

(16:13):
Talk about that for a minute.

Speaker 3 (16:15):
The important thing to factor in, Bernie is this returning
starters is such a vague topic or a vague title.
And let me give you an example. Georgia played fifteen
games last year. You have five offensive linemen. The players
made seventy five starts. If you ask most people sitting

(16:37):
at a bar, how many starts does the player have
to make to be a returning starter, they're likely to
say six, maybe seven count as a returning starter. Well,
if you have seventy five starts and each player is
making six starts, you could potentially have twelve starters. So
if you lose three players that started fifteen games each,

(16:59):
but you have six players that start at seven games each,
does that give you six returning starters?

Speaker 5 (17:05):
No?

Speaker 3 (17:06):
I count returning starters a little differently. If there's a
full time starter, a number one receiving yards production player,
the number one running back. If they leave, it doesn't
matter who you have back. You have to count that
as a lost starter, so you have fewer returning starters

(17:26):
in that matter. I think returning production is so much
more important. Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, South Alabama, Missouri, Michigan,
and Yukon are on top of my list for returning
production that takes in the passyards, the rush yards, the
receiving yards, the O line play, the D line, linebacker.

Speaker 4 (17:49):
And dB tackles.

Speaker 3 (17:51):
At the bottom of the list, we of course have Colorado,
ten State, Old Dominion, uab Utah State, East Carolina, and Stanford,
although many of the one that jumps out because I
didn't list them on the fewest returning starters because they
have eight. But again when you look at their production there,

(18:12):
they don't have a quarterback, they only have forty three
percent of their offensive linement. They return forty nine percent
of their total tackles. So you put all those numbers in,
you know that's the team. I clearly have a few
arrows on the down on the downgrade four.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
Talk with Ralph Michaels of Wager Talk. So, Ralph, great stuff.
What's interesting is in the inverse proportion, what you have
coming back in terms of starters and even production is important.
But what may even be more important is what you lost,
what you lost to graduation, what you lost to the draft,

(18:52):
et cetera. Talk about that distinction, Ralph, and how that
affects your approach.

Speaker 3 (18:58):
You know, I completely look at what a team lost
more than what.

Speaker 4 (19:03):
A team has.

Speaker 3 (19:04):
That as I said, you can take offensive linemen and
wide receivers and for the most part always say you
have everybody back where you have four or five returning
starters on the offensive line, if you had a lot
of players make starts. I'm going to go back to
my Phil Stiel days and for those that don't know
North Coast Sports and Phil Stiel Publication at Phil Stiel

(19:26):
College Preview. I worked for Phil for about eighteen years.
I was the general manager of the last twelve years
when I've left, and in his magazine he has a
list of what all conference players are returning and what
all conference players are gone, And that's an important thing
to look at because a lost starter is not a

(19:48):
lost starter. You know, a person that just barely got by,
got beet out a few games is not the same
as losing an all conference player. And I also do
a draft guy each week, now, excuse me, each season
after the draft, and what I do is we know
a first round player is not the same as an
eight a seventh round player in the draft. So I

(20:11):
give a points system. Eight points for the first round,
seven for the second, sixth for the third, and five, four, three, two,
one all the way down. So you look at what
a team lost to the draft. And obviously, like anything,
if you're in high school and you lose a five
star recruit to college, it's going to be tough to replace.

(20:32):
If you're in college and you lose a first round
draft choice to the NFL, it's going to be tough
to replace. If you're in the NFL and you lose
a Hall of Fame player, it's much tougher to replace.

Speaker 4 (20:42):
So I just want to run down the quick list.

Speaker 3 (20:45):
Of what teams lost last year. Alabama and Georgia each
had ten players drafted in the NFL draft, but Alabama
had two first round, a second round, and four third
round players. So in my system, they actually lose forty
seven points. Georgia lost thirty eight, So you see the

(21:05):
significant of what those two have to replace. Ohio State
lost thirty, Michigan twenty seven. Florida, a team that only
went six and seven, lost twenty four points. That's a
big concern TCU. Of course, they're not used to sending
eight players to the NFL, so them losing eight players
to the draft is a huge dropoff. Next is Iowa

(21:29):
with twenty three points. Tennessee, Clemson, Penn State. Illinois is
another one that jumps out that normally doesn't lose nineteen
points in the draft rankings to those teams.

Speaker 4 (21:40):
So look at how.

Speaker 3 (21:41):
Many all conference players are back, look at how many
all conference players are returning, and actually look at those
studs that you lost in the NFL draft and where
did they rate in that draft system.

Speaker 1 (21:54):
Just getting started with Ralph Michaels here coming up, Raffell
dive into poweringings strength to schedule, some more betting data,
and then, of course before we let her off go tonight,
he'll share with you a couple of bets. He's maybe
even a couple of futures. But first let's go to
our guy, Kevin figures with the latest.

Speaker 6 (22:13):
Okay, Bernie will start in Major League Baseball from Friday night,
Arizona out slugging Cincinnati ten to eight. That's six straight
wins for the d Backs. They now have a half
game lead over the Cubs for the second NL at
wildcard spot. Shytown did lose to the Pirates two to one. Earlier,
Spencer Strider picked up his fifteenth win of the season Brads,
beating the Giants five to one. It was Seattle seven

(22:35):
and the Royals five. As the Mariners have won nine
of their last ten twins, handed the Rangers their eighth
consecutive loss. Twelve to two was the final score there.
Milwaukee beat You Darbish and the Padres seven to three,
six straight wins there for the Brewers. Dodgers have won
five of their last six. After they beat the Red
Sox in Boston. In the NFL forty nine, Ers traded
quarterback Trey Lenz to the Cowboys for a fourth round pick.

(22:56):
The Niners lost their preseason matchups to the Chargers twenty
three to twelve. Brock Party five of nine, passing for
seventy three yards and limited action for San Francisco.

Speaker 7 (23:04):
Bryce she Young thro.

Speaker 6 (23:05):
A touchdown pass for Carolina, but it was a Lion's
picking up a twenty six to seventeen victory, and you
at Tennessee being the Patriots twenty three to seven.

Speaker 7 (23:13):
Back to Bernie Frida.

Speaker 1 (23:14):
All right, thanks Kevin. We keep it rolling right along
with Ralph Michaels. Fascinating high hopes for Penn State this
year and obviously the Big Tenson Conference are very plugged
into and I believe ralf they're a top five ranked
team preseason. Where do you have them in your power
ratings and talk about some of the highlights of your
top ten power ratings this year?

Speaker 4 (23:36):
Well, I have Penn State.

Speaker 3 (23:38):
Let's see if I can count real quick, two, four
to six.

Speaker 4 (23:41):
I have them eight, Okay.

Speaker 3 (23:43):
I obviously have George on top with most teams. I
have Michigan and Ohio State at the same mark. I
have them, followed by Alabama, LSU. I have Florida State
higher than most, and then Texas, Penn State, USC, Clemson
or and Tennessee. Now, when you're looking at those teams,

(24:05):
one interesting thing I do in my college football guide
is I do the average line per game. I take
each team's power rating, I project out the entire season
with a schedule. I put in the home field edge,
so it gives you what each team, how many times
each team is going to be favored, how many times

(24:26):
they're going to be between the threes, and how many
times they are going to be a dog of three
and a half or more. And I also use an
average line. Now, let me tell you the top team
in the country, Georgia. Their average line this season in
a game. I have them at minus twenty eight point
eight points per game. So it's pretty hard not to

(24:46):
run the table if your average line is a twenty
nine point favorite in your twelve game schedule.

Speaker 4 (24:52):
Obviously they don't face.

Speaker 3 (24:54):
Alabama, they would face them in the SEC Championship. But
when you come down to a team like Tech Texas
plays a very difficult schedule. Their average line, despite being
a top eight power rated team in mind, is only
minus fourteen point one points per game. That ranks number fourteen.
Kinnes see another team that I have very high in

(25:15):
my top twelve, but to their average line almost minus
thirteen point three. That's actually a small number when you're
that high of a power rated team. So people may say,
who do I think is the best team that is Georgia, Michigan,
Ohio State. When I say who do you think has
the best chance to run the table, you actually have

(25:38):
to make those distinctions based on the schedule. Obviously, Ohio
State and Michigan play each other. On the bottom of
the list, people love talking about the top To me,
I think it's more important to know who those bottom
featers are because when college football linemakers are making the line,
you never really know how could the first team is.

(26:00):
You know, you know the difference between two and three,
you know the difference between two and ten, But you
never really know how good you have to make the
top team because you're basing a line on what the
power rating, what the public is betting, not what the
power rating is. Many times that happens on the back
end too. If people see a line of forty points,

(26:21):
even though they should be a forty five point favorite,
you sometimes get value fading those bad teams because the
Vegas bookmakers or the national book makers now at this
point don't need to make the line where it is
the bottom of the barrel. For me, it is the
power rating numbers. Arkansas State Bowl and Green Charlotte, Texas State,

(26:43):
Sam Houston, those are the teams. The worst team as
far as average line goes, and it makes total sense
is Massachusetts because when you're a MAC team, or you're
a Sunbelt team or CUSA teams, that average line gets
flattened out because of your conference play. UMass as an independent,

(27:05):
doesn't have a bunch of.

Speaker 4 (27:07):
Those easy or playing.

Speaker 3 (27:09):
Lesser conference opponents, so their average line this year is
plus fourteen point five points per game.

Speaker 1 (27:17):
I'm glad you brought up you Mass. They're catching seven
at New Mexico State. I believe they've attracted a lot
of professional action. But the send off line was ten.
Is there still value on you Mass?

Speaker 4 (27:27):
Saturday?

Speaker 3 (27:28):
Ralph, Well, I wouldn't bet it, but if you asked
me which side I was going to play, I still
would be betting the U side.

Speaker 4 (27:37):
You excuse me, the UMass side.

Speaker 3 (27:39):
So that's sort of a double edged sword, you know,
is their value?

Speaker 4 (27:43):
No, would I vet it?

Speaker 3 (27:45):
No, But if I had to pick a side, it
would still be that. You know, New Mexico State is
a team that doesn't deserve to be a double digit favorite,
even a touchdown favorite at this time. So again, when
when you have a team like U Mass going through
the progressions they are, I would tend to lean with
them in.

Speaker 4 (28:04):
This role, all right.

Speaker 1 (28:06):
Talking with Ralph Michaels Wager talk great job laying out
power ratings and top ten, bottom ten JUXTA polls that
against strength to schedule. You mentioned Michigan, I've got a
real beef with the cake schedule they have. They've got
two games I believe, at home against Ohiose State and
at Penn State. Who do you believe has the toughest

(28:27):
schedules in the country and the easiest schedules of the country.
When you sort of when you sort of boil it
down to those folks on the short list of somebody
who could be a potential playoff team.

Speaker 3 (28:40):
Well, again, basically, there's no secret formula for my strength
to schedule. As I said in my College Football Guide,
I have the schedule for every team listed out with
the average line. So when I'm taking the strength of schedule,
it's basically the twelve teams you're going to play, the
average power rating for those.

Speaker 4 (28:59):
Teams, the home.

Speaker 3 (29:01):
Field edge brought in, so you look at the toughest
schedules and it is excuse me, one second, South Carolina
clearly the number one Florida the number two. Alabama's a
surprised because with Alabama's non conference schedule they get up

(29:22):
to number three. Now, of course those are all SEC
teams and old misses. Number five, number four is going
to be in trouble this year. Michigan State has the
fourth office schedule with their program perdue number six, PU seven,
Missouri eight, Utah nine. Now, Missouri is the team that
everyone seems to be betting over the total. I don't

(29:45):
tend to disagree. Utah is a team that I clearly
like to fade as well. I think they're an underproposition
year to date. We talked about Texas earlier for a
minute there. Texas does have the number ten schedule, so
you know, you break that out and and it's and
it's a situation where I like Alabama this year. I said,

(30:09):
even though they were number one in the NFL Draft,
they're a team that knows how to reload. There's a
difference of teams that return five or six starters like Alabama,
Georgia and Ohio State that are just mills of bringing
in five star talent and know how to recruit talent
to fill in their slots. But the biggest losses for me,

(30:29):
the biggest underplays in this situation.

Speaker 4 (30:32):
Utah under the total.

Speaker 3 (30:34):
I like Missouri over the total, and I do like
Alabama as well. Rob.

Speaker 1 (30:38):
Before we dive into a couple of futures, other plays
on the future places you might have maybe a week
zero play in a Week one play. I want to
ask you about a specific game. USC is laying thirty one.
I believe it's the latest line I've seen to San
Jose State. Lincoln Riley has been pretty much money Week

(30:58):
one the last six years, averaging by one of averaging
by winning by an average margin for about thirty six
thirty seven points. However, I can't pull the trigger on
this game because of USC's defense. Do you have a
thought on the side of that game and if you're
going to be.

Speaker 3 (31:13):
Involved, I am not going to be involved, but there
is clearly a side I.

Speaker 4 (31:18):
Do like USC.

Speaker 3 (31:20):
So Bernie, I didn't mention I was going to talk
about this, but I did a segment on wager Talk today, Okay,
And I think it's important to know what history has
shown US Week won college football favorites Game number one
have covered fifty four point three percent. That's a pretty
nice margin. Week won away favorite since twenty eighteen have

(31:44):
covered forty four point eight percent, So positives for home favorite,
negative for a way favorites and oeah. By the way,
I'm a Stanton Shark guy. Over under since twenty and
eighteen have gone forty four point eight percent to the
to the over, so they've gone fifty five point two
percent to the under. Now we're not going to base

(32:06):
a play on that, but I also looked at charts
for game one big favorites.

Speaker 4 (32:11):
Since twenty eighteen.

Speaker 3 (32:13):
Game one college football double digit favorites fifty eight point
four percent, favorites of seventeen or higher, fifty six point
one percent, favorites of twenty four or higher, fifty five
point three percent, favorites of thirty or higher fifty five
point four percent. One caveat I did, and I did

(32:35):
post this on Twitter on my Twitter account atkal sports ov,
so you could check out this chart. When an FBS
team is playing an SBS team in game number one,
if they're a double digit favorite, they've covered sixty four percent.
If they're a thirty point favorite like Ohio State, excuse me,
like USC, they've covered sixty eight point two percent against

(32:58):
the spread. That's just an astronomical number for me. So
when you're playing an FCS team and you're a forty
five point favorite, you're going to bring in your twos,
You're going to bring in your threes, and how excited
at those players. When an FBS team like USC is
playing an FBS team like San Jose State, there seems
to be more focused. Perhaps you're playing your ones in
your twos a little bit longer, and perhaps the win

(33:20):
means a little bit more for the public eye. With
that said, I am a big proponent of playing those
big favorites in the first half. When I broke down
the numbers for the last five years, when a thirty
point favorite is laying twenty one or less in the
first half, they've been a more positive expectation ev than

(33:42):
they are for the full game. So I do like USC.
I would clearly play them first half in this role,
as I do think the offense gets out quick enough.
I do think the defense has enough of an upgrade
to keep San Jose State in Bay at least to
start this season.

Speaker 4 (33:58):
Even with Chevron Corder.

Speaker 1 (34:01):
Ralph, I knew this would happen. You hold a nation
captive with the wealth of information you have. Unfortunately, I
just got about a minute. So tell the folks a
game maybe you've already fired on for Saturday, and tell
the folks where they can find your good material.

Speaker 3 (34:15):
I'm not one to force action. I passed on Saturday. Okay,
I have a clear lean with Vanderbilt. I think they
carry take care of business. Two of my top props
Louis Tho over the season total and my top season
prop Toledo to win their division.

Speaker 1 (34:31):
In the MAC and I believe Vanderbilt is seventeen and
a half over Hawaii. If this is which is the
last I saw, tell the folks where they can find
your stuff.

Speaker 3 (34:40):
Ralph, Well, the one thing I ask is this, don't
spend a penny. Head to wager talk dot com. Go
to the Ralph Michael's page download my college Football guide,
and I think it's the best guy I ever did.

All right back on the Bernie Final Show Fox Fororts Radio,
come to you live from Tarak dot Com studios here
in Las Vegas. Eight seven seven nine nine six six
three six nine Bernie's Backyard bunkin Bets we teed up
week seven, midnight Top of the Hour, Don't get shout
Out eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox. Shale'll take
your call and we'll get you in the queue. Okay,

(38:12):
Trey Lance, He's off to Dallas. Look, I wish you
luck go make it happen. We don't need speeches We
don't need platitudes, we don't need sympathy. We need to
see you get on the field, and when you get
on the field, make something happen while you're on the field.
My teethitche every time I hear somebody say, well, he
didn't get to play that much football, Well, what did

(38:32):
he do when he was on the field that made
you believe that he would live up to the hype?
I know the game he started that he got hurt in.
I'm telling you Kyle Shanahan was running the nineteen oh
six single wing offense. Didn't let him do anything. And
I hate to say, Look, there are objective truths and
there are personal feelings, and you're allowed to have personal feelings.

(38:52):
Because Trey Lance is very likable. He was also going
to be QB four, not QB three. He would have
been QB four behind Brandon. Remember, Jimmy G, he was
just a game manager. Toss him to the side. He's
no good, gets hurt all time. Yeah, sure, with Jimmy
G laughing at now, who's starting for the Raiders when
seventy five percent of his games got to the Super Bowl.
But he was only a game manager. Trey Lance was

(39:14):
a game breaker. But it was all theoretical, all theoretical.
He was supposed to be the starting quarterback for the
forty nine ers for a long time. In theory, he's
gone and they got a fourth rounder. And what do
they have to do to get him? Well, you know,
they got three first rounders. Or check that the forty

(39:37):
nine ers traded three first rounders to the Dolphins, so
they can move up to get Trey Lance two years
ago and Miami, what do they do. They packaged the
twenty one pick to get Jalen Waddell, They packaged the
twenty two pick to the Chiefs for Tyreek Hill, and
they packaged the twenty three pick to the Broncos for

(39:58):
Bradley Chubb. So look, if John Lynch is telling the
truth and Trey Lance's story is yet written, not yet written,
and he's got a bright future, good, let's see it.
Let's see it. I think it would be a great
story to see him land somewhere else and do what
they hoped he was going to do in San Francisco.

(40:20):
That's life, is a bart Giamatti once said, the game
is designed to break your heart, all right, coming up
Bernie's backyard, Bunkin Bets Week seven, Chase at the Controls

Speaker 2 (41:26):
We got questions, we got crisis. Who will come out
on top?

Speaker 10 (41:33):
We're calling on you. Let's see what you got. It's
gain time, it's showtime. It's Bernie's Backyard Bucks.

Speaker 3 (41:42):
And bets.

Speaker 11 (41:46):
Hey, guys, how we doing, Shay?

Speaker 1 (41:48):
How you doing, buddy?

Speaker 11 (41:49):
I'm doing great. Another week, another daily Bernie's backyard bunking bets.

Speaker 1 (41:54):
All right, you ready to be to maestro. We got
some peeps on the phone.

Speaker 11 (41:57):
Yep, let's do it. So we got Poppy from San Diego.

Speaker 1 (42:00):
Oh Poppy, we missed. Where were you last week? Poppy?

Speaker 3 (42:05):
But you know the conspiracy theory how you said about
the fall? Answer?

Speaker 4 (42:08):
Think someone was on hold? Because I love signal.

Speaker 1 (42:12):
Oh man, we're gonna have to write a letter to
our congressman.

Speaker 3 (42:18):
Yeah, I'm gonna write a letter to the amer in
San Diego.

Speaker 1 (42:23):
There you go, that's all right, let's go, Poppy.

Speaker 11 (42:26):
So what college football team did New Dallas QB? Trey
Lance like?

Speaker 4 (42:34):
Oh, Tray Lambs?

Speaker 5 (42:36):
Yeah, and you always lay grow with the Iowa stay
Actually North Dakota State the same altmater as Carson Wentz
and Easton Stick.

Speaker 1 (42:51):
But you were right, you have the state part right,
But I don't think the judges will allow We can't
allow that, right, I don't.

Speaker 11 (42:58):
I don't think we can allow that.

Speaker 1 (42:59):
All right, Well you're the boss, Shay. Hell, I've just
longed for the ride here man.

Speaker 11 (43:02):
So the Browns are at the Chiefs later today at
ten am Pacific Standard time. The over under is set
up forty one and a half. Are you taking the
over or the under?

Speaker 1 (43:11):
Wow?

Speaker 3 (43:12):
And that's Browns and the Chiefs. Well, I don't know
if Andy Reid, I.

Speaker 4 (43:19):
Don't think it's gonna starter fince. And it's going to
be in Kansas City.

Speaker 1 (43:24):
I'm guessing yeah, it's in Kansas City.

Speaker 7 (43:26):
Yeah, yeah, I'll go.

Speaker 4 (43:28):
What the let's go, what the under?

Speaker 3 (43:30):
All the stuff are going to be playing there under?
So many goings?

Speaker 1 (43:35):
Okay, yeah, boy, this is a tough one betting the
tolls in a week three game like this, when uh,
I'll tell you what I've got. I'm feeling a little
saucy and I'm hearing that. I'm honestly hearing that, Deshaun Watson.
It's looks stinky like the Padres in camp, and I

(43:57):
think they got it. I think you might see some offense.
So I'm gonna take a flyer. I'm gonna take a
flyer on the over. I'm gonna hold my nose so
one of us will be right. Poppy, good luck, Thank you, Poppy.

Speaker 11 (44:09):
Are defending champ By the way, all right, Our next
caller is Don from Tacoma. Go Don, how you doing?

Speaker 4 (44:17):
How are you doing today?

Speaker 1 (44:18):
Doing well? Sir foo?

Speaker 11 (44:22):
So Don? Which NFL team has the most Super Bowl appearances?

Speaker 1 (44:27):
Appeart?

Speaker 11 (44:28):
Yeah, appearances.

Speaker 4 (44:35):
I'm gonna go with the New York Giants.

Speaker 1 (44:37):
Oh, I thought you were gonna say it. It's actually
the New England Patriots. Remember the Patriots got it in
eighty six when they lost to the Bears forty six
to ten. Then they got in again in ninety seven
when the host of Brett Farre's only one, and then
all those appearances with Tom Brady. Remember he didn't win
them all. He won six and I think he lost three,
so eleven appearances. But you knew it. Good question that shake?

Speaker 4 (45:01):
Go ahead, Donal, thinking of championships included not.

Speaker 1 (45:05):
Just just appearances, just appearances. He did make that clear,
he did. So.

Speaker 11 (45:10):
The Jets are taking on the Giants in the preseason
super Bowl. The over under a set at thirty nine.
What are you guys taking?

Speaker 6 (45:21):
I'm gonna take the under because they just don't see
Dave All playing the starters.

Speaker 4 (45:26):
Verry Long and I think I think.

Speaker 6 (45:29):
That Aaron's gonna play maybe two sets.

Speaker 1 (45:32):
The most Yeah, I like the under two. As a
matter of fact, professional moneys come in on the under.
It's not down to thirty eight and a half, So
thirty nine is a nice number you're giving us there,
Uh shay. And oh, by the way, not for nothing.
The Hard Knocks entrant every year three and fourteen against
the spread in their final game and the Jets are

(45:53):
laying six. So just just a little something there. All right,
Good luck, Don, Good.

Speaker 11 (45:57):
Luck, Don.

Speaker 4 (45:58):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (46:01):
All right.

Speaker 11 (46:01):
Our next caller is Nathan from our Orlando. How are
you doing, Nathan.

Speaker 4 (46:05):
I'm real well, happy to be.

Speaker 1 (46:07):
On, all right, Good to have you Nathan. All right, buddy,
all right, thanks for checking in.

Speaker 11 (46:12):
Since nineteen seventy four, which sporting event has held its
event every Sunday on Memorial Day weekend, which is coming.

Speaker 1 (46:19):
Up Memorial Day weekend.

Speaker 3 (46:28):
Monday.

Speaker 4 (46:28):
Now you're pokeball?

Speaker 1 (46:33):
How is it? How is it not the Indy five hundred?
Am I wrong?

Speaker 12 (46:36):
No?

Speaker 1 (46:36):
You're you're right, bron Okay. I was thinking, oh, man,
did you come up with a really goofy trivia which
would be which would be cool? Yeah? In case the
Indy five hundred? Very good. You know what's interesting about
that is what we're When did they do the Indy
five hundred before nineteen seventy four? Do we know? It
doesn't matter?

Speaker 11 (46:55):
I can come back to you with that.

Speaker 1 (46:56):
Well, we'll talk about that later in the show.

Speaker 11 (46:59):
All right, So the Dodgers are playing the Red Sox
at Fenway Park later today at one pm Pacific Standard time.
Pulia Rias is pitching for the Dodgers, while James Paxton
is set to start for the Red Sox. You over
under a set at nine and a half? What are
you guys?

Speaker 1 (47:12):
Lammon?

Speaker 4 (47:15):
I'll go over.

Speaker 1 (47:17):
I kind of like the under in this one. Both
guys are striking on pitchers. H Paxson's got a good
e ra urious. I'm just gonna go with the under
and keep it there. What what you you got the
under at? I think you said nine and a half. Right, Yeah,
I'm gonna play the under. Okay, So good luck there, buddy,
we're on opposite sides. Well maybe you'll beat me.

Speaker 11 (47:38):
Good luck, Nathan, Thanks, good luck. And our next caller
is going to be Dave from Phoenix. How you doing, Dave?

Speaker 1 (47:45):
Dave?

Speaker 4 (47:47):
Hello, gentlemen. By the way, that Michaels was a great, great.

Speaker 3 (47:50):
Guest earlier tonight.

Speaker 1 (47:52):
Roff's a great guy too, The Pride of Cleveland man
should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
He's a very rare individual. There's lots of talented people
in this industry, but Rolph has a special breed of
his own in my opinion. Good guy.

Speaker 11 (48:07):
Yeah, Okay, we're gonna so who was the number one
pick in the NFL draft this year?

Speaker 3 (48:16):
That would be Bryce Young?

Speaker 1 (48:18):
There it is there, it is whoop there it is.

Speaker 11 (48:24):
Okay, So the Yankees are taking the Rays there today
at one ten pm Pacific Standard time. Clark Schmidt is
set to start for the Yankees, while Tyler glass Now
is now set for the Rays. The over under set
at seven and a half.

Speaker 3 (48:38):
Oh boy, that's a pretty low total.

Speaker 4 (48:43):
Seven and a half.

Speaker 1 (48:45):
With the Schmidt in Glass Now, I'm gonna go over.
I'm gonna hold my nose and go under the numbers
telling you it's going under. Clark Schmidt does not have
a great era, but he doesn't walk anybody, and neither
does Tyler Glass now. And those day games following a
night game have a tendency to favorite pitching. So I'll
hold my nose and a going here. Good luck Dave.

Speaker 3 (49:06):
Yeah, thank you, guys.

Speaker 11 (49:09):
And this is our last caller. It's Gene from Memphis.
How you doing, Gene?

Speaker 1 (49:13):
Hello, Jean?

Speaker 11 (49:14):
You doing?

Speaker 1 (49:15):
Are you since your first time on the game, Jean,
it's my first time. Okay, Well, welcome in, sir. Thank
you all right. I'll tell you what. I'll tell you
what give my best of the folks down on Beal Street. Man,

You need come to Big Beal's Barbecue. Man, I gotta

Speaker 1 (49:37):
Your name on it. Hey, Geene, I'm all over that
like a cheap suit man. All right, that's all right,
all right, Jane.

Speaker 11 (49:44):
Where will the super Bowl be held this coming season?

Speaker 1 (49:49):
Uh? Wow, say anything? All right? It's actually our hometown
in Las Vegas, gonna be right here at the Agent Stadium.
But Geene, hey, don't be a stranger.

Speaker 5 (50:07):

Speaker 1 (50:07):
I love that you got Saint Louis ribs there. Those

Speaker 1 (50:22):
I like the way that rolls off you're telling all right, man,
I'm all over there like a hobo on and a
ham sandwich. Actually, all right, Gene, thanks for checking in, buddy,
hope you can hope you're a call back again. Thank you.
All right, So that kind of went fast tonight there,
uh uh, Shay, good job, any thoughts.

Speaker 11 (50:40):
No thoughts at all, man. We had a good time.
Jean made me hungry.

Speaker 1 (50:45):
I love Gene. Jeene a dance machine, bringing some great
energy there, some great energy. First time, good good callers tonight.

Speaker 11 (50:52):
Yeah, I gotta go to Memphis, man.

Speaker 1 (50:54):
Well, I'll tell you it's a rocking place. And I
got friends that live in Germantown, Tennessee's a great and
I've been to Memphis. I've been to Graceland. I've been
to the minor league stadium there and that Memphis smoke barbecue.
Oh boy, oh boy. That'll get you writing bad checks.
All right, great job tonight, and hopefully I guess can

(51:15):
you do you know when you have the standings out, Shaye?
So people really like to see him?

Speaker 11 (51:22):
Yeah, yeah, of course. So it's Ethan. That's going to
be putting out the standings.

Speaker 1 (51:25):
Okay.

Speaker 11 (51:25):
I'm hoping that he'll have them out before Wednesday, but
no promises.

Speaker 1 (51:29):
Okay, So the folks, the folks really do enjoy it.
And we're coming into the stretch run now, and I
want to see if I can keep my pristine trivia
record and my ATS betting record going. So we'll see,
we'll see how that goes.

Speaker 11 (51:42):

(52:05):
twelve hours. We got college football. What are the big storylines? Well,
I'll tell you, because you know what, there's a lot
of them this year. Hi, Bernie Frattle, We're coming to

way tire buying should be. Well, you made it. College
football is here. We're now just about eleven hours away
Notre Dame and Navy kicking off from Dublin, not Dublin, Ohio,

(53:32):
where Brady Quinn is. From Dublin, Ireland, where Brady Quinn
is right now follow along. You made it. That wasn't
so bad? Was it?

Speaker 5 (53:41):
So?

Speaker 1 (53:41):
Now? We get to follow what I believe are the
biggest storylines, not the least of which. Can Georgia threepeat? Yes,
Georgia is going for a threepeat. It's been done once
in the history of college football, back in the fifties,
the University in Minnesota. Yeah, and pressure your friends over

(54:02):
the water cooler with that one. The University of Minnesota
the only team to three peat. They did it back
in the fitties. Now Georgia has a chance to do
something that I will tell you. Actually, Minnesota did it
in the thirties. Forgive me the three straight National Tires
titles thirty four to thirty six. Georgia can do it,
but they still have to. Okay, they haven't done it yet.

(54:24):
You heard Roth Michaels. They're going to be prohibitive favorites
in every one of their games and even when they
get to the most likely which they will I believe,
to the SEC Championship game. But the Bulldogs lost ten
count of ten more players to the NFL Draft last season,
and big ones Jalen Carter, who's already making a name

(54:45):
for himself in Philadelphia. Their offensive tackle Broderick Jones, another
pass rusher also making a name for himself in Philadelphia.
Nolan Smith, all first rounders. Stetson Bennett. He was a
fourth rounder, but he's looked pretty good in preseason, and
I think he has a rule in the NFL. I
see a lot in him now. Carson Beck who is

(55:07):
Stetson Bennett. It's a backup last fall, but he's want
the starting job. The good news is he inherits a
stellar offensive line and a very deep, talented group of
receivers and pass catchers. Remember brock Bowers, he can start
in the NFL right now for multiple teams. He's back.

(55:29):
He's a tight end. He's worth a price of admission.
Keep an eye on him, Brock Bowers. The defense, by
the way, absolutely loaded again. Mickel Williams up front, Jamal Dumas, Johnson,
he's their stud linebacker, Malache Starks, Javon Bullard, Kamar Lassiter.
They formed what might be the best secondary in college football.
Even though Georgia has lost so much, they've still got

(55:52):
so much talent on the roster and again a very
favorable schedule. The truth of the matter is the table
is set for Georgia to do it again. I don't
know that I'm predicting it, but I wouldn't go against them.
Michigan can't beat them. Ohio State had them on the ropes,
but they couldn't close them. So don't have to navigate

(56:12):
through a brutal SEC this year. But they've done it
before again. I think that's the number one storyline because
they're trying to do something has been done in ninety years,
and that's the repeat. Remember the Pac twelve, they're now
the Pack four. Well actually that's not true. They're still
the Pac twelve. But this is their swan song. This

(56:34):
is it, this is it. And one of the great
storylines coming out of the PAC twelve soon to be
the Pack four is the USC Trojans because they return
the Heisman Trophy winner, their quarterback Caleb Williams, who happens
to be the preseason favorite, and USC is the preseason favorite.

(56:58):
I head of Washington, Utah Oregon. SC's look, they got
a stacked offense and they've they've made some additions through
the transfer portal on their defense, which was not great
last year. So we shall see how that works. Because
if SC can put any kind of defense on the
field to match that offense, there's no reason they shouldn't

(57:19):
be a playoff team buying something unforeseen or an unfortunate injury. Now, Utah,
I remember, SE's on their way to the Big ten
after twenty twenty three, Utah, they're on their way to
the Big twelve. Put some respect on Utah's name. I
don't know why people don't. They're actually the two time
defending Pac twelve champion. And yes they have a veteran

(57:43):
quarterback and Cam Rising, but he is coming back from
a torn acl But the Utes, the two Utes could
also have the best offensive and defensive lines combined in
the conference. Flat out, Utah has gotten it done. Man Now, Ucla,
in theory, should be very dangerous on offense, even though

(58:07):
they're breaking in a new quarterback could be a five
star freshman named Dante More And Oregon State they're coming
off a ten win season. Now the question. The question
here in terms of the storyline, has can the Pac
twelve in their college football playoff drought? They haven't had
an entrant in the College Football Playoff since twenty sixteen.

(58:31):
At the very least, there should be a good conference
race Uscucla, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington. They play very good
football in the Pac twelve's not like it used to
be back in the day. But it's funny how when
you put them on the field with other power of
five schools, how well they do. Remember Oregon just went
into Ohio State a couple of years ago and pushed
them around pretty well. Right, So look, I realized they

(58:54):
also had trouble against Georgia. I'm not mixed up and
had trouble against Auburn. But irrespective of that, I think
you'll see a competitive athletic Pac twelve. Now there's a
team that it's become a I won't use the term
running joke because that's not fair, but there's been this

(59:14):
group think echo chamber statement that they've been trying to
blurt out for the better part of a decade. Now,
is Texas back? Some people say Texas is back? I say,
is Texas back? Remember as loaded as they are, and
they are, they got athletes on both sides of the ball.
And when quinn Ewrs is right, he's right. But I

(59:35):
don't really have a hell of a lot of faith
in Steve Sarkisian. He's never won ten games. So they'll
have a real acid test at Alabama, I think week two.
So the question is not as Texas back, which is well,
of course that's a question. But can Texas win this
new Big twelve? Because remember they're on their way to

(59:56):
the SEC. But you forgot that, all right. This is
the first two years of transition for the Big Twelve.
It's the final season with Oklahoma and Texas, additionally BYU Cincinnati, Houston,
and Central Florida. They're all playing their first seasons in

(01:00:16):
the new Big Twelve. The next year Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado,
and Utah will join the Big twelve Oklahoma and Texas
Gonzo they depart for the SEC. So can Texas win
this new look Big twelve before they head to the SEC? Yeah?
The times they are change in Utah is on the
way to the Big twelve, Texas on the way to

(01:00:37):
the SEC, USC on their way to the Big Ten.
If you can follow all that, you're better than me,
all right. So for the twenty twenty three season only,
the Big twelve will actually be the Big fourteen. That
figures to be a little competitive. I believe it'll be
very competitive. Texan is Texas is the media Darlin. They're
the preseason pick to win the league, clearly one of

(01:00:59):
the most talented rosters in the country. But stop me
if you've heard that before. They routinely fail to live
up to expectations. So the third question around Texans. Can
the Longhorns win their first Big twelve title since twenty
oh nine. That's back when they had Colt McCoy played
the championship game January twenty ten and the Rose Bowl

(01:01:22):
lost Alabama. Colt McCoy got hurt. Now, Texas finished third
last year behind Kansas State and TCU. TCU was a
perfect twelve and zero in the regular season. They failed
to Kansas State in the Big Twelve title game, but
they rebounded. They beat Michigan, They outgained him, they got
a couple of pick sixes. I think they very much
bothered Michigan with their speed. I'll take that to my grave.

(01:01:45):
And TCU unfortunately ran into Georgia. But you know what
happened there. We're talking about Oklahoma. We're talking about Texas.
Who's gonna win the Big Twelve. Oklahoma, by the way,
coming off its first losing season since nineteen ninety eight,
but they're expected to have a bounce back. As far
as the rest of the teams in the Big twelve.
Don't ever go to sleep on Texas Tech. They're a contender,

(01:02:09):
Baylor always loaded with athletes, and I think Oklahoma State
is flying under the radar as well. So the top
three storylines I'm following. Will Georgia get the three peat?
The PAC twelve and their swan song, can usc with
their Heisman Trophy winner get it done? And Texas? Is

(01:02:29):
Texas actually back? Can they win the Can they actually
win this new look Big twelve before they head to
the SEC? Now, there are three other storylines, one involving
the ACC, one involving a certain structure, and one involving
a certain coach. No shortage of storylines and we're gonna
bring them all to you coming up. But first let's

(01:02:50):
go back to our guy, Kevin Figures with the latest
all Right and Bernie.

Speaker 6 (01:02:54):
Major League Baseball on Friday night, Spencer Streider struck out
nine and seven innings of work, leading Atlanta to a
five to one victory. In San Francisco. The Mariners defeated
at the Royals, while the Twins hammered Texas, so Seattle
is now tied with the Rangers for the Al West lead.
Dodgers defeated Boston seven to four. Arizona won at six
in a row with a ten to eight victory over Cincinnati.

(01:03:16):
You had victories for the Brewers, Phillies, and Baltimore. An
NFL preseason, The Chargers defeated the forty nine Ers twenty
three to twelve. San Francisco traded quarterback Trey Lance to
Dallas for a fourth round pick. Bryce Young was seven
of twelve passing for seventy three yards and a touchdown
to Adam Thielen and a loss to Detroit. Ma Leak
Willis took the bulk of the snaps for the Titans.
He threw two touchdown passes and two interceptions in a

(01:03:38):
twenty three to seven victory over New England and a
golf second round at the Tour Championship. Klin, Morricawa and
Victor Hovlin tied atop the leaderboard at sixteen under Scottie
Scheffler Is two shots off the lead back to Bernie Freddo.

Speaker 1 (01:03:52):
All right, thanks Kevin, checking with you and Shaye about
forty five minutes from now. I get your thoughts on
Hard Knocks episode three. All right, Florida State's been in
the news a lot. They went out of the ACC
I think it's gonna happen. By the way, Saturday Night
Special guest Larry Sorenson, we're gonna talk about college football realignment.

(01:04:13):
Larry's to play by play color man for Wake Forest
football and baseball, and all played in the Big Ten
as well before ten years in the Major League. He's
got a thing or two to say. It's very interesting
thoughts and the Wake Forest perspective on college football realignment.
It's gonna be a little bit more difficult on the
student athlete than people realize. So as Florida looks to

(01:04:35):
make their way out of the ACC because they want
more TV money, could they overtake Clemson. Clemson's dominance in
the ACC with Dabbo was damn near automatic for about
eight years. There Could that be coming to the end,
because if it's coming to an end, it's Florida State
or nobody else. All right, Clemson's won the ACC title

(01:04:56):
seven of the past eight seasons, but I think they're
in for a serious challenge from Florida State this year.
Now we'll see how Florida State looks against LSU. So
you're looking for revenge and I expect them to be
much improved here too. Under their coach who has the
Southern accent. FSU did have a breakout ten win season

(01:05:17):
last year, okay, and they returned a ton of talent,
And then you heard Rolf Michaels talk about the importance
of that. Not only that, the Florida State made upgrades
at a lot of positions thanks to this new thing
called a transfer portal. Now, Dabos Sweeney he's one of
these holdouts. He kind of refuses to utilize the portal,

(01:05:38):
even when there are position groups on his roster that
maybe could use some help. However, Sweeney this year did
finally relent and make a change to his coaching staff
by hiring offensive coordinator Garrett Riley away from TCU. And
you saw what an excellent, you know, offense TCU had

(01:05:59):
last year. And I love their quarterback. So Clemson made
six consecutive college football appearances between twenty fifteen and twenty twenty,
they won two national championships, and then the last couple
of seasons, Clemson they've not been anywhere near that standard,
particularly on offense. Now, we'll see if kid Klubnik can

(01:06:19):
live up to his hype. We'll see what Garrett Riley
can do. Orchestrating that offense. You saw what he did
for Max Doug and a TCU. Clemson finds himself in
an interesting position. They're shooting for a resurgence. The question
is can Florida State pull the rugout from under them?

Speaker 5 (01:06:40):
That?

Speaker 1 (01:06:40):
I believe the only team in the ACC they can
do that. One of the other storylines this year is
this is the last season, the final season of college
football's fourteen playoff format beginning in twenty twenty four. Remember,
college football is going to expand to twelve games, but
the mechanism for selecting those twelve teams is now in flux.

(01:07:04):
See when the twelve team format was originally improved, approved
for twenty four to twenty five seasons, it was supposed
to feature six automatic qualifiers and six at large teams.
The automatic qualifiers would be the sixth highest ranked conference champions,
presuming that that would be the five Power five champions

(01:07:25):
and one top ranked champion from the group of five.
But that could change now because the PAC twelve was
on the verge of collapse. Right now, college football officials
are weighing do we change the format for the twelve
team playoff? Could it maybe drop to five automatic qualifiers
and seven at large spots, or could there be no

(01:07:48):
automatic qualifiers at all. These are questions that have been
raised because it will ultimately effect, by the way, the
distribution of revenue, and so the college football contract with
the ESPN is up after the twenty twenty five season.
That means the format could even change again completely in
twenty twenty six. But again, let's not bury the lead.

(01:08:11):
This is the final season where there will be the
same old four team format, all right. I could have
put this as a storyline first, but it's hard to
do that when I think this team is only gonna
win two or three games. Sorry, because I'm a big fan,
but I don't bet with my heart. You get heart disease.
Dion Sanders is primetime in more ways than one, and

(01:08:36):
he's turned Colorado into mussy TV. Now. They open up
a week from Saturday against the aforementioned TCU Horned Frogs
and they're a twenty one point underdog. I don't expect
Colorado to have a good year. Maybe they proved me wrong,
all right, Remember Dion inherited a one win team. He

(01:08:56):
completely turned over the roster in one offseason. You may
man out have seen the spring game, and I think
it's sold out. Well, I hope you didn't have a
program because it's worthless because since the spring game. Since
the Spring Game, thirty nine players have left the program.
Yes you heard that right, since the spring game. Now

(01:09:17):
we are told the quality, the quality of the roster
is massively improved, and you're gonna get to see him
on national TV two straight games right out of the
gate TCU Nebraska. So how many games, if the if
the quality of the roster has really improved, which I
will believe it has, how many games? You know, how

(01:09:38):
many wins? Does that translate to? Now? They got pretty
good skilled players from what I'm hearing, and you've got
the stud Travis Hunter, a two way player, wide receiver,
cornerback who had gone anywhere in the country and he
went to a Jackson state, which for him personally thought
was a good decision. He wanted to play for Dion,
goout on an opportunity to develop under Dion, got all

(01:10:00):
the national exposure you could ever want, right, you didn't
have to go to Alabama again. It's I think it's
worked out for him. I respect the decision he made,
but I really think Colorado is gonna lack depth, and
there's concerns because they do have a solid quarterback Deon
sunshod Or Sanders, God forbid, for whatever reason, he has

(01:10:23):
an issue where he can't play. Because I don't think
they have I don't know what they have behind Shud
or Sanders. There's major questions about this team's death on
the offensive line, and from a big from a bigger perspective,
it's fair to wonder how you just simply put an
entirely new team on the field, ask him to assimilate
in a few weeks, and how well let translate to
results on the field. All right. The one thing, though,

(01:10:46):
is Dion Sanders coach prime has brought one hell of
a lot of buzz to the program in his first
year as head coach. Will that translate to a lot
of wins? I don't think so, but you know, you
know what we're gonna be watching. By the way, way,
Dion is not the only new coach. You got new
coaches at Auburn, Nebraska, Wisconsin. These are storylines. How are

(01:11:08):
these guys gonna fare? How is Hugh Freeze gonna do
at Auburn? Certainly he's got sec experience, but his tenured
Old Miss flamed out, he had a bunch of controversies.
He rebounded with a hell of a four year run
at Liberty, and he's got a nice transfer class to
Auburn's roster, which was not one of their best rosters
last year. So Auburn coming off back to back losing seasons,

(01:11:29):
how quickly can Hugh Freeze have them competing, maybe getting
back into the upper echelon of the SEC. I think
Hugh Freeze can coach I do. How about the Big
Ten Nebraska brought in Matt Rule. Matt Rule completely rebuilt
Temple and he rebuilt Baylor before he had a little
bit of a rough go in the NFL with the
Carolina Panthers. Nebraska has not played in a bull game

(01:11:54):
since twenty sixteen. But the ability to grid that upgrade
that roster through the portal, which I believe Ruled in,
should pay some immediate dividends. Now what's the measuring stick
in Nebraska? I think if they got to a ball game,
that would be a significant building block for the corn Huskers. Now,

(01:12:15):
one other Big Ten team of the new coaches was
Concin Remember they fired Paul Chris last year. They hired
Luke Fickel from Cincinnati who had a ton of success
at Cincinnati. Now, just by virtue of that hire a loan,
expectations are very high in Madison. Fickel has brought some changes.
He brought in Phil Longo as his offensive coordinator. Wisconsin's

(01:12:37):
long been known as sort of this physical, plotting, run
heavy offense. Well, phil Longo's background air raid guy. Think
of you know Mike Leech, that type of air raid.
So can you imagine was consin running an air raid
offense with those linemen? It's can't tell me that's not
going to be fun to watch. Finally, there are a

(01:13:00):
couple of teams we're gonna have to see. These are
proud college programs that have had success, that have had notoriety,
that have had thirty four thirties made about them. The
question is can they rebound? Coming up? I will share
with you who those programs are, who those high profile
programs are coming off tom tough seasons. Will they bounce back?

(01:13:23):
Can they rebound? We'll chop it up as we finalize
are what I believe to be the top storylines for
college football. And it all starts in a little over
eleven hours. I want to remind everybody tonight show brought

Fox Sports Radio. All right, back in the Bernie Frattle Show,
Fox Sports Radio Company, live from the tire Act dot

(01:14:07):
Com studios here in Las Vegas. Come out. Top of
the hour. We're going to talk about Hard Knocks Episode three,
kind of recap. I'm going to do my best to
dissect Robert Salah's it was a little bit of a
clunky speech about the four levels of being a competitor. Anyway,

(01:14:28):
I'm enjoying Hard Knocks. It's not great, but it you know,
it's what we got. By the way, for those who
have asked, Okay, so, Jim Harbaugh is the subject of
a self imposed three game suspension by Michigan. Yeah, I
know it's gonna be rough slidon, you know, facing off
against East Carolina UNLV and Bowling Green without Harborball there.

(01:14:49):
But what Michigan decided to do was launch a preemptive
The NCAA wants an apology, and he wanted admission that
Harbball was not truthful. This is sort of Michigan's de
facto attempt to do that somewhat because I don't suspicion
Harball will ever apologize. He's angry. My people tell me

(01:15:10):
he's angry. Now, this goes back and whether or not
he bought a kid a cheeseburger or not. We're telling
me we're totally did. But it wasn't that. It was
when the NCAA started to ask questions he wasntruthful, and
he went from well, I don't remember doing it, so
I didn't do it to whatever, and he's like, what
are you picking on us for? We're a clean program.

(01:15:30):
That's why we don't win because we don't cheat. And oh,
by the way, he got way bigger fish to fry
out there. Well, look, the NCAA. The longer Harball was
obstinate and refused to cooperate. The NCAA Okay, fine, you
want it, you want to do this. It's like Chess
palmentary and the Bronx tail. When he locked the door
and says, okay, now you just can't leave. They said,
how about those how about those zoom calls? Okay, how

(01:15:54):
about the the you know, the the recruiting violations, how
about the text messages and the practice violations during COVID
And all of a sudden he got a bunch of
level one, level two violations. And when January rolls around,
if Hardball leaves remembers Bounce only two point two million.
You know he wants to go to the fel at
some point and win a Super Bowl. It bugs him.
He lost to his brother, that's a fact. Well, you'll

(01:16:17):
get suitors. And I know, as people have said, hey,
look Sean Payton's fifty nine, Like what he got Jim
Robots fifty nine? What can he get? We think he's
a better coach than Sean Paige. He'll stay tuned. But
that's why Michigan did what they did. All right, So Michigan,
while looking to finish the job top credit. They'd beat
Ohio State two years in a row, got to the

(01:16:38):
playoff two years in a row. We won't talk about
what happened next. The fact is they got there. So
can teams like Texas A and M who they would
dearly love to get there. And Miami remember them, remember
the U. Can they ever rebound? These are at one
time high profile programs. Johnny Manziel, Johnny Football, Miami, Oh
my goodness to you. Texas A and M into the

(01:16:59):
twenty twenty two season ranked in the top ten, and
they completely face planted. They finished five and seven. You
would assume based on their roster and what they're returning,
they should be better this year, right Jimbo Fisher. I
don't know that he wanted to, but he did. He
fired our check that he hired Bobby Petrino. Talk amongst yourselves,

(01:17:20):
but Bobby Patrino is, you know, has demonstrated his ability
to put creative, dynamic offenses on the field. So if
those two can coexist, Jimbo Fisher and Bobby Patrino, the
Aggies should improve. They've got personnel. Their quarterback Connor Wegman,

(01:17:41):
he's serviceable. He got an excellent receiver group Evan Stewart,
Andy Smith. The Aggies also have a ton of promise
on the defensive line. They've got athletes, by the way
in the SEC. Florida coming off consecutive six and seven seasons,
first time the Gators have had a losing record in
back to back seasons in four years. So second season

(01:18:02):
under Billy Apier Kenny rebound Gators open up with a
major challenge. They have to go to Utah this year.
They nipped Utah last year with Anthony Richardson in Florida
that great sunny in night game on Labor Day weekend.
Miami another acc team coming off with disastrous five and
seven record year one under Mario Christiball christa Ball got

(01:18:24):
rid of both coordinators and he brought in a bunch
of players in the transfer to bolster both sides of
the ball. At the very least, you should at least
see Miami back in a ball game. And then there's Oklahoma.
We have to get Chris Plank on the show some night.
They went six and seven in their first year under
Brenton Venables, the erstwhile star defensive coordinator at Clemson head

(01:18:48):
coach at Oklahoma. Now six and seven. Before twenty twenty two,
Oklahoma hadn't won fewer than eight games in twenty four
years entering twenty twenty three. Well, Oklahoma's got a favorable
schedule and they have designs on wanting to win a
Big twelve title. So there you have it. So many

(01:19:08):
storylines to follow. Oh yeah, what will Harbaugh do when
o'hof state rolls around? We'll have to see and then
they have to go two Penn State, Kent, Texas A
and m rebound? Can Miami rebound? Ken? Florida rebound? Ken
already said Miami Oklahoma can they rebound? Plenty of storylines
in college football and it all starts in ten and

(01:19:32):
a half hours. Don't tell me you can't wait. Coming up,
we talk about Hard Knocks Episode three. Nothing special this year,
but there are elements to every episode that are worth dissecting.
I'm Bernie Fraddle. We're Company Alive from Las Vegas, Fox

buying should be. You know, the one thing about Hard
Knocks is each year you look for maybe a team
or a coach or a player to so to separate
themselves apart from their competitors, apart from their fellow teammates
in the locker room, other coaches. And I don't know

(01:20:37):
that Robert Sala has done that. I like Robert Sala,
but during the third episode of Hard Knocks with the Jets,
Robert Sala takes time in this meeting to list quote
the four levels of being a competitor, survivor, contender, competitor
and commander. Now his belief that while most our survivors

(01:21:01):
are contender, as Sala says, the level he wants all
his players to beach is competitor. See he says, quote,
A competitor is someone who is internally motivated to be
the best, regardless of the situation. His place on the
depth chart does not matter, money does not matter, fame
does not matter. He's always trying to be his best. Absolutely,

(01:21:26):
he can't be swayed because he's already maxing out his potential.
This e F and dude is trying to pr everyday
of life. He's got a championship mindset. Hmm. I like
Robert Solo. Why do I feel like he's straining to

(01:21:48):
be something he's not. The F bombs don't roll off
his tongue. Trust me, I've been around people who can
give F bombs the best of them. Kevin and I
had talked about the movie Harlem Night. It's just a beauty.
It's a masterclass on F bombs. Robert Salad sounds clunky
about F bombs, but there's something about that speech. I'm

(01:22:09):
trying to process a key element of that speech because
by the way, he even looks at Aaron Rodgers and says,
you know, Aaron, even after twenty years, you can learn
something on this one. It's a good one. Dog. I
don't know, man, I'm waiting for that moment when the
receiver runs the wrong route or drops an open pass,

(01:22:36):
or it's going to be a nononomical response. Rogers said,
he's not a SMARTSS anymore. People don't escape their nature
that easily. And the Jets got a tough first six games,
and I would you know, I'm not a fanboy, but
I would love nothing better to see the Jets get
back to the super Bowl. Seriously, and if they don't,
they don't, But I root for the story, and there
would be no bigger story. The Jets of the Lions

(01:22:56):
are the two teams. Okay. And at the end of
the show, I'm going to tell you I think what
I think. The lines are real. But you know again,
Salar reveals his four levels, and I think the content
was meant to be inspiring. And what he's trying to do,
Salas trying to do is hammer home the importance of
intrinsic motivation. You know what I mean by that, You're

(01:23:19):
just motivated without any external reasons. You're doing it because
it's your duty and you want to and it's natural.
And the only thing more valuable than reaching your potential
is to help other people reach their contential. A potential,
you know, So, how can one level of a competitor
be a competitor? And more confusingly, how can a competitor

(01:23:41):
not be the top level of competitor? You can be
more competitor the competitor. It got a little confusing, Okay,
And That's where when Salad does these things, it just
doesn't feel like it's really it's natural for him. He's
not a motivational speaker. I think he's a solid football man.
I don't really know. I don't really know if he's
a head. I don't know. We're gonna find out. We're
really gonna find out, because they're loaded, all right. And

(01:24:04):
I thought that episode three moved kind of slow. It
plotted and plotted, and there were mundane conversations and then
all of a sudden, boom, they show a string of
fights during the joint practices with Tampa Bay, and that
actually added some juice to the episode. But prior to that,

(01:24:24):
it just felt like this mixtape and they're running out
of material. Really, there's just not a whole lot of
there there. There's not a lot of meat on the bone.
Over and over again. The Jets, you know, they preached
the value of competition, even their tight ends. Coach Ron
Middleton shouts the word out to no one in particular,
competition competition, okay, And then all of a sudden, the

(01:24:46):
fight breaks out with Tampa Bay, and Tampa Bay looked
like they were getting after it. Man, I don't know
what pissed them, Pete and theircorn flakes. But they were
they looked it felt like they were the instigators. Okay.
Interestingly enough, in episode three, there was no follow up
to week two's discussion of the team's offensive line issues,
even though Robert Salah went on a pretty big rent

(01:25:08):
that week and even the week before. But we saw,
you know, a lot of clips sort of preparing for
Dalvin Cook's arrival, the plane and stuff. Rogers took a
back seat a little bit. Producers checked in. He showed
some rookies, you showed some journeymen, and then of course

(01:25:28):
the obligatory game, right and then the Jets' third preseason game.
One of those first year players are running back by
the name of Israel Abana Konda. He goes down with
a knee injury, or looked like it was knee injury.
He tells trainers he can hardly feel his leg. Unfortunately,
his family and friends and coaching staff kind of they

(01:25:52):
have that nervous look on their face from the sidelines.
So here's a guy who's a fifth round pick. But
these are one of those moments that you look for
and hard knocks out of year. The player that comes
out of nowhere that becomes a potential game change. You
saw last year with Roderigo, the linebacker from Oklahoma State
who ended up starting for the Detroit Lions, and all

(01:26:14):
of a sudden, this poor guy, fifth rounder having a
good camp, but this is a moment that could completely
change his career trajectory, and you saw it on film.
Could even changes life one of the things that moment did.
But you had to really dig deep to notice it
and ascertain it and have it sink in that when

(01:26:35):
you look at a young man's life, you get it.
You get it up close, and you get it a
close up. What am I trying to say, A close
and personal look, trying to blurt that out up close
in personal look of the stakes. These are the stakes
in play. You could look at preseason as is necessary evil.

(01:26:58):
You can look at preseason as lackluster. You can look
at preseason as blah, I don't cover the lines for
ten years. It's very important. That's drama. What you saw
there was actual drama. You talk about a young man's life.
You're talking about a guy in the roster that might
have been able to help the Jets. You're talking about
his potential career being affected all those things. It happened

(01:27:19):
right there on tape on Hard Knocks, kind of flew
unto the radar. Now we come to find out, fortunately
for him, the injury was a thigh contusion. Now that's
an injury, and it's very painful injury, but thank god
it's not a torn acl or an achilles or something
like that. Now, I doubt they'll go into much depth

(01:27:39):
on how his two week absence is going to impact
his ability to make the roster. Now you've got Dalvin
Cook in the depth chart along with pres Hall, so
it gets a little crowded, and they don't show cuts
anymore on Hard Knocks. But if you watch episode four,
which I will be and you'll see it too day,

(01:28:01):
that's one of the things I'm going to be looking for.
Will they be following up on this, gentleman, this fifth
round draft pick is real Lebanaconda? What's the situation with him?
Because it all played out right there in front of
God and everybody on tape. Finally, with the last fifteen
minutes of the episod episode three, the show kind of

(01:28:25):
turned its attention to the Jets final preseason tune up
against the new York Giants, which is Saturday night, and
Sala tells Quinn Williams, we're starting everybody in that game,
even the big man. The big man is Quinn Williams,
who likes to talk about getting sacks, and he got
upset someone called him fat. I like him. I like

(01:28:46):
that dude. That dude's a vibe. He in addition to
being a hell of a player, he's a vibe. And
I like this Jets team. By the way, the camera
cuts to Ride and he looks at Randall Cobb and
he says, I'm back, So you're actually gonna get see
Aaron Rodgers take some snaps as well. All in all,

(01:29:08):
I can't really say that this this year's you know,
iteration of Hard Knocks is memorable. It's just not. And again,
they don't show cuts anymore if you don't have a
crazy coach like Rex Ryan. When he did you know
that New York Jets twenty ten, I think is when
they were last on Hard Knocks. Now that that was memorable, memorable,

(01:29:33):
be nice if I could say it. So there you
have it, all right, not a whole hell of a lot.
You kind of dissect sola speech intended to be inspirational,
slightly confounding. Not sure how emotionally impactful or truly inspiring
it was. But the content was okay. But again, I've

(01:29:55):
always said, you know, it's not enough to know the
words to New York, New York. If you don't sing
it like Sinatra, it's not gonna have the same feel.
It's not gonna resonate. And I don't know. Look again,
I think Robert salas a solid football man, but it's
it's not compelling when he speaks to me, okay, And
I just think that you know, you've seen you've seen

(01:30:16):
some moments in Hard Knocks. You've seen some funny moments.
You've seen some ugly moments, you know, and you've seen
your your dose of Aaron Rodgers. And you've seen you know, rookies,
and you've seen the really lousy, lousy rookie show. These
they're just brutal. They good. Poor guy try to tell
the joke. I don't know. I can't put my finger

(01:30:39):
on it. I will just I guess I'll just say
this that this season's episode of this season's you know,
iteration of Hard Knocks to me is missing something It's
not I liked last year better with the Detroit Lions,
quite honestly, and I had very high hopes because it's
Aaron Rodgers, Woody Johnson, It's New York baby. And by

(01:31:01):
the way, Ralph Matchio the karate kid with a cameo
appearance at the end, reluctant to drop the F bomb,
but what the heck? He drops the obligatory F bomb
at the end and even barks at Sauce Gardner, who
looked a little upset when that Tampa Bay receiver beat
him on that skinny post. But I digress. Coming up,
we'll bring in Shade, bringing Kevin, get their thoughts on

(01:31:24):
hard Knocks. Maybe I'm being too hard on it. Hey,
I'm watching it. It's like eating pizza, Okay, frozen pizza.
You'll eat it. Taste good, You're not bad, not bad.
But it's not like going to Grimaldi's not gonna going
to your favorite Italian. I mean, it's not like going
to New York or Detroit or Chicago or a deep dish. No,
but you still, you know Pete Pete. Even frozen pizza

(01:31:45):
taste so you're gonna eat it. This is kind of
like a frozen pizza to me. How's that for an analogy.
I want to remind everybody that the tire X Sweepstaks continue.

Las Vegas, Nevada. Before I get to Kevin and Shay.
I can't believe I forgot this part when Woody almost said,
Woody Allen, you know, by the way, let's not forget
the New York Jets have had a twelve year draft,
all right, twelve year drop, meaning that have been to
the playoffs in twelve years. And so Woody Johnson, he splurs,

(01:33:09):
this year spent a lot of money on players, and
he also splurs Donald little Bling comes walking in with
his mister T starter kit, takes off his jacket and
the whole you know, that big, big, that big new
chain that said Woody on it, his name in silver.
It's just, you know, in the Jets and the whole

(01:33:30):
room was hooting and hollering, and you know, he's the
boss and he signs the checks and they had to, right,
but maybe they meant it. But what he then says,
I've inspired by you guys. I've been doing this for
a number of years, and this team's coming together and
the pieces we've had it and blah blah blah. It's
almost like, okay, fingers crossed behind my back, please please
let this work, please okay. Even though Rogers took a

(01:33:50):
pay cut of thirty five million, Johnson did sign off
on the Jets, absorbing one hundred and ten million dollars
on US contract. Then he gave Quinn Williams a long,
long term deal four years ninety six million. Then he
payt allan Zar a four year, forty four million dollar contract.
Then recently he brought in he okayed bringing in Dalvin

(01:34:11):
Cook one year deal worth up to eight and a
half million. Look, Woody Johnson left no room from interpretation.
I've been investing money and now I need to get
some return on the investment. We got to take advantage.
It doesn't happen every day. It's up to all you guys.
You got fifteen million fans. We're all excited. I feel
there's a lot of pressure on the Jets. Anyway, I'm
sorry I left that part out because I thought it

(01:34:33):
was a one of the more impactful parts of Hard
Knocks Episode three. Kevin, I know you watched episode two.
We talked about it last week. Have you had a
chance to watch episode three?

Speaker 7 (01:34:42):
Absolutely, Bernie, I did feel free to.

Speaker 1 (01:34:44):
Comment on any or all of what I said. Take
your time, you got the floor.

Speaker 6 (01:34:47):
Well, the last one, the Woody Johnson, which I thought
was hysterical because the first thing I thought of when
he took off and you know, his jacket and had
the chain. I don't know if you watched thirty Rock,
and there was an episode where Steve U Shimmy played
an undercover officer and he walks in and he said, yeah,
I'm going into play a high school student. And he
wears a backwards cap with the skateboard and walks up
to a group of kids, Hello, fellow kids, and he's

(01:35:10):
clearly this forty year old guy.

Speaker 7 (01:35:11):
That's the first thing I thought of when I saw
Woody Johnson.

Speaker 6 (01:35:13):
But the overall message was solid, going Bernie, well, no, I'm.

Speaker 1 (01:35:18):
Gonna let you jump back in. I'm sorry. I had
that feeling too. I'm familiar with that show thirty Rock.
Was that that was Jim Parsons and Haley Coco? Is
that is that what that was? Or my wrong?

Speaker 5 (01:35:28):
No?

Speaker 7 (01:35:28):
No, that was that was the That was Tracy Morgan.

Speaker 1 (01:35:32):
Oh, I'm sorry, Yeah, my bad, My bad. Yeah, I
like that shoe. I didn't see that episode, but to me,
doing that felt forced. He was like the drunk who
stops before the stops on twenty feet, so no one
thinks you're drunk anyway, continue on, because I think you
got the same in French nighty continue.

Speaker 6 (01:35:49):
One and the solid speech, you know, talking about the
different tiers of players. I thought there were some good
things in there. I do think to your point, some
of this seems a little bit contrived in a little forest.
But I look again, like we talked about last week,
I don't think that his passion is forced, but I
do think a lot of the stuff is over the
top and unnecessary. But I do understand the greater overall message,

(01:36:10):
which I think was solid. I thought a cool part
part of it was Randall Cobb and his wife and
them kind of talking to the two yeah and telling
their two sons that they have another sibling on the way.

Speaker 7 (01:36:22):
I thought that was a cool way to present that.

Speaker 1 (01:36:25):
I agree that was a nice little touch at d
in there, Yeah Cob.

Speaker 6 (01:36:29):
Also, I think this was towards the beginning of the episode,
in a circle with the receivers telling them, if you
guys continue to make these mistakes out here in the
practice field, Aaron Rodgers is not going to throw you
the ball, and just kind of talking about the gravity
of the situation and realize, you know, the Jets have
been also ran for so long, and now everything is heightened.
You know, you are considered to be favorite. It's not

(01:36:49):
the favorite in the division, but certainly a favorite to
be able to potentially win the AO East.

Speaker 7 (01:36:54):
And the standard now is different.

Speaker 6 (01:36:56):
That twelve is what he called them, and he says,
excuse me, eight, the number Aaron Rodgers is wearing. Now
now that he's here, you guys have to raise your
level of a game because if you don't, he's not
going to throw you the ball. So I thought that
was an impactful speech to have on a pretty young
core of receivers. You mentioned Quentnin Williams joking about being
called fat. I thought that was a nice little comic
relief of him walking around with Mike Evans after the

(01:37:17):
joint practice and that they hurt his feelings when.

Speaker 7 (01:37:20):
They called him fat.

Speaker 6 (01:37:22):
And the Jern Cap eight mile freestyle for the rookie
the rookie event, I thought was pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (01:37:28):
To be honest, I understand Eminem reached out to him.
He got a kick out of that.

Speaker 6 (01:37:32):
Yeah that was one. Yeah, that was pretty sweet, and
he killed it. He absolutely nailed that performance. So I
thought that was great.

Speaker 1 (01:37:39):
All right, Those are all really good observations. Give me
your thoughts on the four levels of competitor. How did
did that speech work for you?

Speaker 6 (01:37:47):
It was overall, yes, yes, I certainly understood what he meant.
It seemed like more of a speech that you would
give to like college kids than pros. I'm imagining what
Aaron Rodgers, a twenty year vet, is thinking and hearing
a speech like that. But I do think overall it's
a fairly young team, so maybe it'll still have some
sort of impact. But it seemed more of kind of
like a rallying cry type of speech that you normally

(01:38:09):
wouldn't see in an NFL situation.

Speaker 7 (01:38:12):
At least that's how I testing.

Speaker 1 (01:38:13):
Okay, that opens the door for a good little back
and forth between you and me. Because the ten years
I covered the Lions, here's what I noticed. There are
two types of players in the NFL. Half of them
play the game because they love football. Half of them
play the game because they love what football can do
for them. It's reality, it's a business. So what I
think what he's trying to do there is say, hey,

(01:38:36):
for you half out there that play the game because
of the lifestyle that provides you, face up to the
fact you're going to have impact on your teammates, and
if you want to be an elite competitor, be a
competitor in a way that affects your teammates. And the
wonders going to bring that up is because the content
was good, but I wasn't moved by the way that
Solid delivered it. He's not the world's greatest order. And

(01:38:57):
I don't like the four STF bombs. I could do
with that. I don't mind if a guy's using F bombs.
Bill O'Brien overused them, okay, but they were natural to him.
He probably uses an F bomb going through wind, he's
drive through. He just that's the way it rolls, right, right.
But back to that speech, believe it or not, it
still can resonate with an NFL player because you really
got to get everybody pulling on the rope.

Speaker 6 (01:39:16):
That makes sense and I can get with that. And
maybe to your point, Bernie, I think you articulated it great.
Is that Maybe it's just a way that he presented
it just didn't seem as genuine to me for whatever reason.

Speaker 1 (01:39:28):
Thought you had a lot of good observations. They're a
nice touch on on Randall Cobb and his two young
boys and his wife and the support systemy has, and
that Hard Knocks does a good job of doing that
and humanizing these guys are human beings. All right, Shay,
have you been watching Hard Knocks? I have, Yes, Okay,
your thoughts, buddy, take it wherever you want to take it.

Speaker 11 (01:39:47):
So I'm actually I really liked this episode. I was
really happy that we finally got to see running backs.
I feel like in the first two episodes we didn't
really see much, and actually it was pretty funny. I
totally forgot Dalvin Cook was a Jet and then I
just see him randomly. I'm like, oh, wait a second, yeah,
And I find it crazy that Dalvin Cook is a
judge just because of the Aaron Rodgers Dalvin Cook dynamic,

(01:40:08):
I mean, a Viking Packers like duo kind of coming together.
I never really thought i'd see that. Like, especially Dalvin
Cook and Aaron Rodgers, two Vets, been playing against each
other for years. It's just so weird to see them
on the same team. We're in the same uniform. And
then another thing I really do enjoy watching is just
the Randall Cobb Aaron Rodgers relationship. I mean, I think

(01:40:29):
twenty eleven was Randall Cobbs first year in the NFL,
and that's kind of around the time I started watching
NFL and really getting into fantasy and just the relationship.
I remember one year I had like the duo of
the Aaron Rodgers Randall Cobb duo, and this was Randall
Cobbs one thousand year, one thousand yard year. So just
seeing the conversations, like him saying, yeah, like this is
your uncle, Aaron Rodgers, and just the small things. I

(01:40:52):
think Cobb also brought up like if he doesn't trust you,
he won't even like he won't throw it to you,
and I thought that was super cool. Just all the
dialogue between them and just so much history between the
relationship was super cool to me.

Speaker 1 (01:41:04):
All good stuff. And I'm glad you brought up the
running back because it conjured up the memory of Dalvin
Cook running twenty or checked that Breshaw running twenty one
miles an hour. And then when you see that and
you know it's a wide receiver in high school, big deal.
When I see Garrett Wilson coming out of his cuts
the way he does, I'm like, oh my god, this
Jet team really has some dogs, man. They are really

(01:41:25):
loaded with talents. So are good observations, guys, And we'll
do week four next week. Is it starts to wind
down obviously, and there's there's a lot of meat on
the boone. I guess you know you put three or
four heads into this and our pairs of eyes on it.
Everybody made some really good observations, all right. Coming up,
Speaking of observations, we got Chris Purfett's World of Soccer.

(01:41:45):
But first let's go back to our guy, Kevin Figures
with the latest and Bernie would go to Major League Baseball.
We had some shaking up in the division standings.

Speaker 6 (01:41:53):
A little bit on Friday, Marins and Rangers now sharing
the top spot of the American League West. Seattle defeated
Kansas City seven five, Minnesota steamroll the Rangers twelve to two.
Texas has lost eight consecutive games, while Seattle has won
nine of their last ten. Houston trails each of those
teams by one game in the division after they lost
to Detroit four to one earlier in the day. Michael

(01:42:14):
Harris went deep for Atlanta they defeated the Giants five
to one, four hits for Freddie Freeman as the Dodgers
notched a comeback victory in Boston. In the NFL, Bryce
Young threw his first touchdown pass of the preseason, a
sixteen yarder to receiver Adam Thielen in what was a
loss to Detroit. The Chargers defeated the forty nine Ers
twenty three to twelve. Prior to the game, San Francisco

(01:42:34):
traded quarterback Trey Lance to Dallas for a fourth round
draft pick. Elsewhere you had the Titans being the Patriots
twenty three to seven. Ryan Tannehill did start the game,
but did not attempt to pass. He just handed the
ball off a couple of times before taking a seat.
College Hoops News. The family of Brownie James said in
a statement he has a congenital heart defect that is
treatable and that he does expect to continue his basketball

(01:42:56):
career in the future. James suffered cardiac arrests during an
on camp his workout at USC last month. Back to
Bernie Frido, thank.

Speaker 1 (01:43:04):
You so much. Kevin so is the coach of the
Spain national team World Cup Soccer. Is he in hot water?
MESSI proves to be all the worldly and much more.
It's why we bring you this time each week. Chris
burffets world of.

Speaker 10 (01:43:21):
Soccer, the greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drama
him him, It's all here in this report from the

(01:43:41):
world of soccer.

Speaker 12 (01:43:43):
Well, Bernie, it's been an eventful week in the world
of soccer, so we're going to start with the champions
of the world in Spain, where the chief of Spanish
Soccer is refusing to resign following a firestorm of his
own making. This past week, Spain became the champion the world,
defeating England in the Women's World Cup final, and during

(01:44:03):
the metal ceremony, Soccer Federation chief for Luis Rubiales grabbed
a player, Jennifer Hermosa, a Spanish player, and just kissed
her on the lips, unprompted, unscripted, unwanted. Louise claims he
had consents that was purely consensual. I don't think he
understands the meaning of that word, because Jennifer Hermosa has
said that at no point was consent given for him

(01:44:25):
to just kiss her on the lips. This has created
a firestorm of his own making and everyone wants him gone.
As with all things. In twenty twenty three, Rubiales claims
he is the victim of quote unquote social assassination, a
claim that just flies like an arrow with no fletching whatsoever.
His real problem is that the backlash is pretty much universal.

(01:44:45):
The government of Spain is seeking his suspension. Meanwhile, the
World Championship squad, all twenty three players are preparing to
boycott and not to play for their country again while
Rubiales remains in charge. It is one of those that
seems just utterly incredible. As always with all things in FIFA,
these federations are being run by guys who just don't

(01:45:07):
seem to have the script in front of them, who
seem to have weird brains whirling in their head.

Speaker 7 (01:45:14):
And I think even.

Speaker 12 (01:45:15):
If you have problems with some of the political stances
that soccer players in the women's game take, this isn't
one of them. This is a pretty easy one. Why
is this guy being a creep? Moving on, Bernie, I'm
sure you and I have talked about Roumelo Lukaku before,
Belgium's all time goal scorer, probably one of my favorite
players who've seen play in the last few years, a

(01:45:36):
brilliant striker of his own right, and unfortunately the past
few years have just not been kind to his career,
and yet, in spite of all of that, he is
the last pig piece set to move in this transfer window,
which is going to close here on September first. Bukaku,
as I said, he's Belgium's leading goal scorer. He had

(01:45:57):
a remarkable career for a long time with inter Milan.
Took his game to Chelsea and it bombed out in
a pretty bad way. Chelsea right now still owns his rights.
He was on loan back to inter Milan, his old
club last year. When he first arrived in Chelsea, it
was greeted with a lot of fanfare. This was a
big striking piece they could really use, but Lukaku really

(01:46:21):
never panned out for them, and now relations have gotten
so bad with the club that Lukaku hasn't spoken with
their new coach since July first. He's done with the
club and he's ready to go somewhere else, which now
leaves us with two questions. One where could he go?
And two could Lukaku still even be good as to
where he could go? Bernie, that's kind of a little complicated.

(01:46:42):
Lukaku himself has some power in this, and he rejected
a proposal that would have seen him go to the
Saudi club Al Jalal. As Saudi Arabia continues to make
their footprint for the Saudi Super League known in this
transfer window, it's alarmed a lot of English clubs in
the relentless courting of big names. It's caused several managers
to weigh in on just how much money they have

(01:47:03):
thrown around to get names like Lukaku and other players.
Many of those players have rejected it. Lukaku happens to
be one of them as well. Inter Milan was in
the cards, but apparently there was a fan backlash reportedly
that has taken that off the table. In Milan has
now withdrawn that proposal. Two more Italian clubs in play,
Juventus and Roma. Juventus, of course, is always in the

(01:47:26):
market for big names, but apparently, according to some reports
and rumors, Lukaku isn't really that keen on playing with Juventus.
That leaves Roma and Ruma is intriguing for a lot
of reasons, mostly because Jose Mourinho, who we've talked about before, Bernie,
I know you love Jose Mourinho, was a manager that
has worked with Lukaku for many, many years. A reunion

(01:47:47):
could be in the cards. We'll have to see as
the window keeps closing. As for whether Lukaku is still good,
I believe so. I believe he's just been under the
management of some pretty bad fits in the past few
years at Chelsea and inter Milan, and a fresh change
of scenery is exactly what he needs. He's thirty years
old for this year, he's entering that last stage of

(01:48:10):
his prime, and he absolutely still has at least a
few good years under him.

Speaker 7 (01:48:14):
I think he just needs the right spot.

Speaker 12 (01:48:17):
And finally, Bernie, we close it with talking about a
very somber story here as San Diego, in spite of
getting an MLS club, is going to be saying farewell
to one of their clubs. San Diego Loyal, who plays
in the USL Championship, will be folding following the twenty
twenty three season. This is notable for several reasons. Loyal

(01:48:38):
was founded and co owned by Landon Donovan, the All
American great who played for the men's team for so
many years. A lot of the reasons why they're closing
has been that they have cited problems with finding a
near and long term stadium solution right now they play
at the University of San Diego or six thousand Seed Venue.

Speaker 7 (01:48:56):
They were trying to.

Speaker 12 (01:48:57):
Seek a modular stadium of about fifteen to twenty thousand
people to be seated there. But it strikes odd because
it's not like USL clubs, and if you're unfamiliar with
the USL, USL forms this next tier of what in
the soccer period of play below MLS. It's nothing as
formal as say the English Football League in the Premier

(01:49:17):
League in England, but it's kind of the assumed pecking
order of American soccer. We've seen clubs full before down there,
but they've always kind of given hints that we're in
some sort of economic trouble. I think a lot of
this has to do with the fact that MLS is
committed to putting a team in San Diego and loyal.
I believe the people in charge realize that they are

(01:49:39):
about to get crushed by this new thing coming. USL
clubs offer a lot more of a grassroots organization of
fans and fan culture for soccer, versus something like MLS,
which is wholly owned by massive billionaires who then go
and buy a club and give MLS money to own
that club. I would have thought support would continue for

(01:49:59):
it in in spite of the fact that there would
be something like a MLS San Diego team, but apparently not,
and we are starting to give up the ghost.

Speaker 7 (01:50:08):
It's a sad day.

Speaker 12 (01:50:09):
San Diego Loyle was one of the more cherish clubs
in the USL and it's sad to see them go.
That's gonna do it for the World of Soccer, Bernie,
as always, We'll see you next time.

Speaker 1 (01:50:19):
All right, Chris. We'll see if Spain's coach apologizes getting
a little rough there. And Chris is right. I do
love Jose Mourinho. He is soccer's version of Bill Belichick.
You first heard about him here on the show with
one of Chris's features of World of Soccer. So all

(01:50:40):
good stuff and we'll see what the new cycle brings us.
Chris back to thirty am Pacific five point thirty am
Eastern Saturday night. By the way, you know, the New
England Patriots may have gotten Ezekiel Elliott. Before the Patriots
got a Zekiel Elliott, their odds to win the championship

(01:51:04):
the Super Bowl sixty six to one per bet MGM.
After signing Ezekiel Elliott. Their odds were sixty six to one. Yep.
I like Ezekiel my man. BJ's probably got him pegged.
I think he'll he'll do some things in New England

(01:51:24):
this year. I think you'll have an impact. But he's
at that stage in his career where if you need
two yards, ze will get you two yards. You need
four yards, ezek will get you two yards. We'll just
keep it right there. Finally, want to remind everybody the
Tire Rack Sweepstakes. It's the final weekend on our Summer

(01:52:30):

here in Las Vegas. Before I go any further tonight,
I want to thank my broadcast team back in Los Angeles,
turning all the dials, keeping us glued together. Great stuff, guys, Shake,
good job with the games. Shake, Kevin, great job, your
good thoughtful comments on Hard Knocks episode three, and Marcus

(01:52:54):
always great job. Tight show tonight with everybody good job?
How many times going to say good job? I got
to be more creative on that. We really appreciate everybody's
effort tonight. All right. Look mentioned the word hype train.
Look it up in the dictionary. The Lion's name is
next to it. All right, The Lions, I get it.
They're in a bit of a weird spot. Didn't even
make the playoffs last season, yet they're one of the

(01:53:15):
most talked about teams of this offseason, all right, and
you hear the word culture, and some people might think
that's an empty buzz word. Look, I would not be
talking glowingly about the Detroit Lions unless I min it.
I covered the team for ten years pre and post
ninety eight to eight. My first year was Barry Sanders.
Last year I remember August seventh, nineteen ninety nine, he

(01:53:37):
retired suddenly. I've seen it all the last year. What
happened Rodd Marinelli? Oh in sixteen, that's right, dan Orlowski
runs out of the end zone. They lose twelve to ten.
That day. Lions were four and zero preseason preseason champs,
score eighty points, gave up thirty two, greatest preseason four
to OH team in history. I've been there, I've seen
it all. There's nothing I haven't seen. This Lions team

(01:53:59):
can win that division. This Lions team should win ten games.
This LANs team should make the playoffs. What they do
from there, we'll find out. Why do I say that? Okay, Well,
let me start with the division, the Minnesota Vikings. I
tipped my cap to what they did last year, but
all year Dan Byer picked up on it. We talked

(01:54:20):
about it on a couple of Sundays, and the fact
of the matters, he was right, and it showed up
in the playoffs and the New York Giants the bill
came do It's called the Pythagoream theorem. If you give
up more points than you score, you don't win thirteen games.
Yet the Vikings did that. If you are seven or
zhoe one score games, that's gonna come back. What goes

(01:54:41):
up must come down. If you are eleven and one
in games scored decided by less than a touchdown, come on, now,
come on now. I don't care what the Vikings are
telling us they did on offense. I think the third
nine win team this year we'll see prove me wrong.
But the Pythagoream theorem usually doesn't lie. It didn't last
year with the Raiders. I gave the same speechlast year.
The Eiders were ten and seven, fired Rich Passacia, and

(01:55:04):
they had the same kind of bottleshom numbers, and guess
what I said, They're gonna go seven and ten. I
was wrong. They went six and eleven. So I'm not
a Vikings fan. And by the way, the Lions were
five and one of their division last year. You may
have missed that, and they completely molly wopped the Vikings.
As Kevin would say in one of those games. The Bears,
they keep telling us they're better, but I'm tired of speeches.

(01:55:26):
I have a lot of respect for Justin Fields, the individual.
He's not an NFL quarterback yet again, don't tell me,
show me, don't make it be your default mechanism to run.
Show me you can operate from the pocket, Show me
you can get the ball out of your hands. And
the Bears, you know, I don't know. They were a
three win team last year. Three win teams don't improve

(01:55:47):
too well. Actually that's not fair. Cam Newton took a
one to fifteen team, gone to the super Bowl the
next year, and then, of course, said Trevor Lawrence did
the same thing in Jacksonville. Damn near didn't get him
to the super Bowl, but he took a three win
team and they won their division for worse than first.
I don't think the Bears have that in their DNA.
I'm not buying it. I'm not seeing it. If I'm wrong,
I'm wrong. That leaves the Green Bay Packers. Jordan Love.

(01:56:11):
I think he's conducted himself admirably these last three years
behind what was kind of a circus. But I don't
know if these are manor league quarterback. I think what
you're going to see is flashes, but you're not going
to see that consistency. And we don't know what he's
going to do on third down. We don't know what
he's going to do in the fourth quarter. We don't
know what he's going to do with two minutes to go. Okay,

(01:56:34):
we don't know what he's going to do in the
red zone. That's where you make your bones. They don't
pay it a punt on third down, they pay it
again first downs. And you got to be that field
general that can put the team on your back once
in a while. Now here's the thing, this one under
the radar. After the line started out one and six
last year, they fired their dB coach Aubrey Pleasant. He
ran this risk reward scheme that was really ineffective. It

(01:56:57):
caused all kinds of communication problems. What are the Lions do?
They install a simpler system and it worked. They were
eight and two down the stretch. By the way, dre
Bli has joined the team as their DB's coach. Additionally,
The Lions knew they needed to get better in the secondary,
so they did. They went out and got cornerback Cameron
Sutton from the Steelers. They went out and acquired safety

(01:57:19):
Chauncey Gardner Johnson from the Eagles. And they acquired cornerback
Emmanuel Molesley from the forty nine Ers. Cameron set from
the Steelers, Chauncey Gardner Johnson from the Eagles, Emmanuel Molesley
from the forty nine Ers. Those are all big upgrades
from organizations that have success. Oh yeah, they drafted linebacker

(01:57:40):
Jack Campbell from Iowa. Great open field tackler, great ron
stuffer fills his gaps. Is he the most super athletic
guy in the world. No, but he's big, strong in
a knock you on your butt. He's already being called
Jack Lambert by some folks who remember Steelers, the Steelers
Hall of Famer. And by the way, did I mention
the Lions. They have the nineth easiest schedule in the

(01:58:01):
NFL this year. Their opponents have accumulative four ninety two
winning percentage. Now I know. They opened up against the
Chiefs on Thursday night, a week from Thursday, catching seven
and Patrick Mahomes has been pretty tough on Opening Night.
Remember a few years ago when Jared goff outdueled them
fifty four to fifty one. Don't go to sleep on
this Lion's team. Nobody knows more about hyping the Lions

(01:58:23):
than I do. Nobody has seen them fall on their
face more than I have. I'm buying them. I think
they're good. They got the receipts, they got their roster.
Now they gotta go do it. But don't go to sleep.
Don't be surprised if they don't win it. If they
win it, excuse me. It's gonna do it. For the
Bernie Fowles Show. Keep it locked up. Next the Great
