Are you a Halloween person?

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Uh? I'm married to a Halloween person.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Okay, so therefore that makes me okay. But before you
were married to a Halloween person? Me? Like, not even
like even when I was a kid. Nope, the idea
that I had to get into the costume. Can't you
just give me the candy? Do I have to put
this costume on?

Speaker 4 (00:51):
No?

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Do you feel comfortable in a costume?

Speaker 5 (00:53):
I didn't go trick or treating until I got with
my twenty years ago, when I got oh my wife.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yeah, I mean I do remember though, going trick or
treating when my kids were really small. Then I would
have some fun with that, you know, the kids running around.
But as a kid, no, I just not. I mean,
I there are people that literally live and breathe Halloween
like it is the day of the How is it

(01:21):
for your wife? Like it's like the day like Tuesday
is going to be just.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
She loves it.

Speaker 5 (01:26):
We used to do this thing where we dress up
as a family for like one thing, you know, whether
it be Toy Story or Mario card our princess bride
or so, it would be like a theme, a family theme.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
I can only see you in Costa. Yeah, I mean.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Stand out. I definitely stand out.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
That is unbelievable. All right, we got another big day
of college football going on right now. We've had one
big upset on the day. Can Kansas taking care of
business against Oklahoma? This was a back and forth game.
Kansas jumped off to the early lead. E from Oklahoma
caneback took the lead. And this is when you know
you're a pretender. You're playing not a terrible Kansas team

(02:16):
and the game isn't Lauren. So it's on the road,
but it's two minutes to go. You punt the ball
to Kansas seven plays eighty yard drive to take the lead.
I mean they just go right down the field, I
mean right through you. So the non defense that Lincoln Riley,
installed during his time at Oklahoma, is still very much
in effect. Right now, speaking of Lincoln Riley, USC and

(02:39):
the Trojans are down twenty eight to seventeen to COL
at the half. Col put up twenty eight in the
first half.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
We'll say against USC fast, Didn't it wow? That fellow?

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Let me ask you this because you know later on
I'll have my Heisman update. Kayleb. Williams is not in
my top three obviously. How does this affect what's going on?
I mean, we've been talking here about Caleb Williams where
you know, let's use the Bears as an example, because
the Bears not only have their own first round pick,

(03:14):
they also have Carolina's first pick, so you know, the
odds are in their favor to have that first overall pick.
And we were saying, well, if you're the Bears now
you would have the luxury of having two top picks.
When you say starting price three, number ones, has any
of the shine come off? Caleb williams sizable stature after

(03:35):
his Heisman season, great start to this season against lesser
opponents have the last few games caused any concern about
his value? How much you would give up in the
draft in order to get Caleb Williams to be your
franchise Quarterbale, Well.

Speaker 5 (03:53):
The easiest thing to do is ask the question, do
you still think he's the first pick in the draft?

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Do you?

Speaker 3 (04:00):
I'm asking you, do you think he's still the first
pick in the draft? I do?

Speaker 2 (04:04):
But but okay, the price tag to get to that
first pick.

Speaker 5 (04:09):
Oh no, no, no, the price tag doesn't change. As
long as someone values him as the first pick in
the draft. The price tag doesn't change because the first
pick in the draft remained the first pick in the draft.
And if you have eyes on him as the first
pick in the draft, then you're willing to part with what.
What he does this year in college football has no

(04:31):
bearing on what that he's not going to be. He's
going to be the first person drafted.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Look what the forty nine ers gave up to get
Trey Lance. Yeah, look what the Bears gave up for Trubisky.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
By the way, passing on Mahomes in that same draft.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
We can go back.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
So no, I mean, there's there's a lot of examples
of exactly what you're talking about. Team they got their
mindset on somebody do whatever. Remember the Saints traded their
entire draft Ricky Walliams, that their entire draft Mike Dicka
in the Saints did age world that did not. The

(05:12):
funny thing is Ricky Williams, once he got to the Dolphins,
a pretty good running back, led the league in rushing
one year. Yeah after he left, Yeah after he left
New Orleans. So again, we are at that point of
the college football season as we head to the end
of October where we will almost have to take a
step back. Right now, one team that is not playing

(05:32):
today is Michigan. Michigan is eight to no. And we
mentioned this a week ago, and they extended a record
that is pretty remarkable on paper. They are the first
team since the APIs started ranking teams in nineteen thirty
six to start a season eight to no in which
they have scored at least thirty points in all eight

(05:54):
games and have given up ten or fewer points in
every game. You think of all the dominant teams in
the history of college foot almost one hundred years, first
team to do that. However, look who they played. They
haven't really played the who's who of college football. And
then on top of that, you got this investigation going
on about stealing signs and everything else. I say this

(06:15):
because on paper and you look at the numbers, Michigan
looks like, hey, a dominant team. I don't see any
Georgia's from a couple of years ago, or Alabama's from
a couple of years ago, or Clemsons from a couple
of years ago. I see a lot more parody at
the so called top of the college football world this season.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
I agree with that.

Speaker 5 (06:39):
The thing we have to realize as consumers of college football,
Eventually these stacked teams will slow down because the enormous
amount of talent that goes to the next level from
these teams.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
You look at.

Speaker 5 (06:59):
Georgia, although they're handedly beating Florida right now, they this
year haven't looked like themselves. No, well, the whole defense
is in the NFL playing tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
And they're all playing for the Eagles, right They're.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
All playing for the Eagles.

Speaker 5 (07:17):
You look at Alabama, Yeah, all of their quarterbacks for
the last six years are all starting tomorrow in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
By the way, their quarterback is suddenly top ten of
the nation in passing inefficiency.

Speaker 5 (07:27):
So when you're always emptying the cupboards and you're restocking
the cupboard and some of the food are some of
the players you're restocking with haven't quite reached their maturity date.
Then you have these ebbs and flows, you have these
times of parody. Next year you'll see the powerhouses begin

(07:47):
to separate themselves again because those kids who are playing now,
some for the first time, will have a year of
college football at the highest level under their belts, and
they'll be ready to take the next step.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
That's the whole point.

Speaker 5 (08:00):
Alabama at one point had Tua, had Jalen Hurts and
Mac Jones in the same building.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
I mean Mac Jones that looks so good at his
last game.

Speaker 5 (08:09):
At the same time, think about that, you had those
three guys, I know, at the same time.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
They're all starting in the NFL.

Speaker 5 (08:19):
Yes, yeah, it's gonna com minute, it's gonna It's gonna
take a little bit for these powerhouses to to really,
you know, rebuild these teams and get them back up
to what we're used to seeing.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
All right, I want to get back to us and
Kayleb Williams, so when he won the Heisman Trophy, the
other three finalists that were there, we're all heading to
the playoffs, he said, I will be joining you next year.
Well that's not happening.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
Well he may get a ticket. He made you join
them at the festivities.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Well he might buy a ticket, But that's about it.
By the way, as a returning Heisman winner, he can
show up at the ceremony because they always bring back
the former Heisman winners. But let's let's talk about Lincoln
Riley for a moment here. So when I really look
at Lincoln Riley's resume at Oklahoma and USC, here's what
I see. A one trick pony. He's an offensive quarterback

(09:12):
guy who, by the way, got transferred quarterbacks in Baker Mayfield,
Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts and Caleb Williams. Now you
can say, well he was his coach at Oklahoma, Okay,
but he brought him to USC. And now all of
a sudden, the rumors are out there that he wants

(09:33):
to attach himself to Caleb Williams. Like, if you want
the best out of Caleb Williams, you need to bring
me along as the head coach. And I'm like, we've
been down this road before. This was Kyler Murray and
Cliff Kingsbury.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
You tell me what is it?

Speaker 2 (09:51):
What is the difference between Cliff Kingsbury and Lincoln Riley.
In my opinion, there is no difference because when you
look at USC after what happened last season, their late
collapse in the Pac twelve championship game against Utah and
that embarrassing bowl game loss, you knew you had to
address the defense, and yet he kept his defensive coordinator,

(10:13):
same defense, even worse than it was a year ago.
That doesn't show me a whole lot, especially if suddenly
you're touting yourself to go to the next level. I
wouldn't touch Lincoln Riley and hand him an NFL head
coaching job. Well, maybe offensive coordinator, maybe a quarterback coach.
Let's see what you do at the professional level. But
to make him a head coach, no way.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
Well what's happening right now with SC and Lincoln Riley
is that opportunity to maybe be a package deal with
Caleb Williams to the next level is expiring right before
his eyes.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
Oh yeah.

Speaker 5 (10:55):
Now, if SC's sitting at eight to zero, undefeated, seven
and one right still in position to be in the
college football playoffs, and they make it to the National
Championship game, that's a package you can sell but your
continual collapse and have the inability to actually put a

(11:21):
defense on the field that can minimize what you do
need from your star. And Caleb Williams in that offense
is something that will be held against him when trying
to move to the next level. We've seen time and
time again coaches with this mind we said Cliff Kingsbury,

(11:43):
with this mindset of offensive guru, this and that and
fail at the next level. Because, as you know, being
a head coach in the NFL, it's different than being
in You really have to appoint or have your finger
on your pulse on both sides of the ball, and
it's very difficult to do when you're so focused on

(12:04):
one side of the ball.

Speaker 2 (12:05):
Well, USC coming out two straight losses, losing on the
road to Cal is the Cal team that came in
with a record of three and four, one in three
in the Pac twelve, Cal leading USC at the halp
I score of twenty eight to seventeen. We'll have plenty

(13:57):
people are jazz by hull lloween. We're jazzed by the NFL,
the ups and downs that we see every single week
in this league. Johnny is right now is our Fox
Sports Radio NFL insider Adam Kaplan. And you know, Adam,
it's the same story week after week after week, Like
you try to figure out why certain teams look really

(14:19):
good and certain teams look really bad. And then we
suddenly get a resurgent Patriots team with Mac Jones looking
like the Mac Jones we saw his rookie season, and
now they take it on the road against a Dolphins
team that well, let's face it, the five wins they
have are against teams out of a combined five wins,
So they're two losses against better teams. Maybe a telling sign.

(14:43):
I want to start with that game, though. Did the
Patriots figure something out last week that they're going to
build on to get that offense finally rolling with Mac Jones?
And how are the Dolphins going to fare against a
coach that knows them all too well and a Patriots
team that does have at times a pretty good defense.

Speaker 8 (15:03):
Yeah, so here's what happened. We'll start with the latter.
What happened to the Dolphins in Philly. So the book
on Tua Tongue of Vloa, the quarterback for the Dolphins,
is very simple.

Speaker 3 (15:12):
Take away the first read.

Speaker 8 (15:13):
Take away that first progression, which typically is over the middle,
and he struggles and he did they I mean, I
can't believe it. They held him to ten offensive points.
But Eagles did that. That's really been the story of
his career and that's why he would take this really
too much contact in previous years and get hurt. So
that's something that Bell Belichick knows. You got to take
off that first read and Grod Mayo, the defensive coordinator,

(15:35):
they'll try to do that. Now, getting back to the
Bills Patriots game last week in Foxborough, they protected mac Jones,
they diversified the pass game a little bit.

Speaker 3 (15:44):
The Bills.

Speaker 8 (15:45):
Now, the Bills obviously won this past Thursday night on
a short week at home. They weren't really impressive there either.
Bills are just not playing chrisp football and They've got
so many defensive injuries, which concerned me. Daikwon Jones are
best run stopping d tackles out for the season. Matt
mullanum I miss into the playoffs. He's got a broken
leg that worries me. He's one of the best linebackers
in football. You know, the Bills are Bills are sort

(16:07):
of like they're treading where they're staying above water because
Josh Allen's playing pretty well. But overall that division is
a little bit more open than I think we probably
all anticipated.

Speaker 5 (16:17):
Let's talk about the Cardinals and Kyler mur Kyler Murray's saga. Uh,
he's cleared to play, not on the injury report, but
yet he won't be playing on Sunday. So what what
are we hearing out of Arizona about what's going on there?

Speaker 3 (16:36):
Yeah? Next week, guys.

Speaker 8 (16:38):
The way that I hear it is at the very
least and this is not the time you really want
to start him. But they play at Cleveland next Sunday.
He should be no worse than the number two quarterback
and depending on how practice goes, because by the way,
he's taking a decent amount of first team reps the
last two weeks. I mean, he may start. It's just
a matter of how well they It's it's terms of timing.

(16:59):
They just Let's not forget he had not practiced until
two weeks ago. The last time they had practice was
late last season. We're talking about late December. You're talking
about no offseason, no preseason, no training camp, and no
practice until six weeks into the season. That that's just
to have him play after two weeks, it's just not right.

(17:20):
It's not what you're looking to do. You want to
give the guy to You really want to give the
guy the timing back.

Speaker 3 (17:24):
That's the thing.

Speaker 8 (17:25):
And the other the other problem is that they have
a brand new offensive scheme. It's completely different than the
Cliff Kingsbury scheme. And the one that they're running, by
the way, ironically, is the Brown scheme. Who they play
next week, it's more of two ten unds to two receivers.

Speaker 5 (17:37):
What to follow up on that, is this a situation
where I mean they're one and six.

Speaker 3 (17:45):
They're on pace to possibly get the first pick in
the draft.

Speaker 5 (17:52):
Is there any possible way that they decide that they
take Caleb Williams and they're done with the Kyler experience.

Speaker 8 (18:01):
The questioning for him is is how are they going
to get out of his contract? That's the number one
challenge for them right now because next year in twenty
twenty four, thirty five million of his thirty seven million
dollar base salary fully guaranteed, so they can't cut them.
The question would be, if he could play well to
end the season, can they trade him with someone won him?
You know the guy five point ten. Teams typically don't

(18:24):
like smaller quarterbacks. Yes, he's the first pick, was the
first pick overall some years ago, but that doesn't really
matter in twenty nineteen. It's what you are as an
NFL player, and it's just that they're they're going to
have to make a decision because what happens is, not
only is twenty four got that huge base salary, a
chunk of his base salary in twenty twenty five becomes
fully guaranteed to March the fifth day free agency, So

(18:46):
they're gonna be a They're gonna be eat in some
money here.

Speaker 3 (18:48):
There's no question.

Speaker 8 (18:49):
It just comes down, Okay, if they want to move him,
can they find somebody to take his contract? And obviously
if that team wanted him, there's no way they're going
to take on his contract, they would have to be
restructured and he'd have to probably take a pay cut.
That's just too much money at this point where a
god's coming off a major injury.

Speaker 2 (19:04):
Adam, are there NFL guidelines for concussion protocol? I asked
this because last week Deshaun Watson had a big hit,
was cleared and did not re enter the game. Now
we have the Rock Party situation where it seems like
almost immediately he was cleared and apparently will be playing tomorrow.
Are there specific league guidelines in terms of when or

(19:30):
how somebody clears the concussion protocol?

Speaker 8 (19:35):
Yeah, So there's six steps for the non game day
protocol we're talking about throughout the week. There's the there's
the ability to have exercise. Then you you graduate to
the players allowed to practice, then they're clear for contact,
and then the final when you see the independenturologist and

(19:57):
they checked the baseline, the original baseline that you have
of what you're given at the beginning of the season.

Speaker 3 (20:03):
If you pass that, you passed. Now the league will
tell you.

Speaker 8 (20:07):
Going back two years ago, it was seven days was
the average was the average return to play from a concussion.
It's now six or six, and it's more six and
a half days. Let's not forget with Purdy. He reported
symptoms on their way back technically technically very early Tuesday morning,
because remember they flew back from Minneapolis. It's not the
three hour time difference, it's it's the time difference when

(20:28):
he flew, which your central time from Minneapolis, and he
didn't feel right now, they didn't let him. He felt
much better Wednesday, and he felt pretty clear on Thursday.
That's why they allowed him to take some reps. Then
he took all of them yesterday. As I understand it,
and I'm told by a team source, he looked great,
He looked normal, no problems that he had the final
concussion examination today from the independent prologis and he's good

(20:51):
to go. So you asked your question, how long does
it take? Usually six and a half to seven days.
It's very rare to do what brock Perdy did. That's
a great question. Now the other thing is in game,
it depends on what what has seen did was he
spotted moving around and shit like he'd going to the
wrong sideline. Did he look right physically and stuff like like?

(21:11):
You have to evaluate what he looked like in this situation,
they're probably eight players who are listed with a head injury.
And last week's because I charged every injury in the
National Football League from starters and keep backups, I counted
at least eight players last Sunday who had head injuries.
Only two of them were concussed elicitus with a concussion
where they were evaluated. Steve, they went into that tent

(21:33):
and they checked him, They went through the testing, whatever
testing they give. They don't tell us exactly what they're
what's asked and how they evaluated in that tent.

Speaker 5 (21:41):
But they were cleared to come back to play. Let
me ask you this. Let's talk about the j E.
T S Jets. Jets. Jets don't look now three and three.
After all, the air was sucked out of the room
on the fourth play of the season. For them, they

(22:02):
manage to step up, compete and they have the Giants,
they have the Chargers, and they have the Raiders. What
are the chances that they can continue to move in
the right direction and we're talking about them next month
for a playoff spot.

Speaker 8 (22:22):
Well, they let's start with Zach Wilson. They feel they
really do feel like he's played much better, probably the
last three games. Now you have to isolate throws. He
really played well against the Chiefs after a very slow start.
I think people probably forgot the Actually he didn't get
off to a good start in the game, but the
final three quarters he was best ball of his career.
Is really good Denver. He made some good isolated throws

(22:44):
against Philly. It was a very controlled passing game. They
didn't ask him to do a lot. So he's getting better.
And yes, you look at their next three games at
the Giants, hosting the Chargers, and at the Raiders, all
very winnable. They should be able to beat a Giants
team starting Tyro Taylor, by the way, play well last week,
but that's a game they should win. And by way,
both starting corners are going to be back. They both
speaking speaking of concussions, they both got cleared from the protocol.

Speaker 3 (23:07):
So that's a game they should win. Yeah.

Speaker 8 (23:09):
Now the hope is, let's forget about the regular season. Okay,
the talk about Aaron Rodgers is I understand it. The
only realistic talk would be if for somehow, some way
they get to the playoffs, could he be ready somehow?
That's the that's their hope. It's not for the regular season.
We got to slow that down a little bit.

Speaker 2 (23:28):
By the way, I have to mention this. So Tyrod
Taylor when he was with the Chargers, we were interviewing him,
and I don't know how it came up, but he said,
you know, it's funny, everyone has always called me Tyrod Taylor.

Speaker 3 (23:44):
I knew that was coming.

Speaker 2 (23:45):
Yeah, Torod, and his mother's named him Tarrod. I mean
she goes, my son's name is Tarrod. Now I spelled
it in a way where people think it's Tyrod. And
he's a good guy, right, he didn't see thirty four
years all right, he's not gonna correct, You're not gonna correct.
But we were so rich Ornberger and I happened to
be there, so we're the only people that actually call

(24:07):
him to Rod Taylor only ice. But I was like,
why don't you tell people? He goes, ah, nobody cares
and he goes I gave.

Speaker 3 (24:15):
I get it.

Speaker 5 (24:15):
You know how many times I've been Ehraim, I'll I'll
introduced myself as from NEBLA, Hey, nice to meet you,
fram and I'm like, wow, I would literally.

Speaker 3 (24:24):
I was literally not what I said one second ago.

Speaker 8 (24:27):
I know that's what I mean, it's funny, but you
have gift gift gift to Rod pretty good credit.

Speaker 2 (24:31):
He played really well last.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
Yeah, he's playing. He's playing well.

Speaker 8 (24:34):
Man and Daniel Jones is was pretty close this week.
So it's it's neck injuries and this is second neck
injury and good for them to win that game last week.
And the trade deadline's coming up here, folks, It's going
to be interesting on that next seventy two hours.

Speaker 2 (24:47):
Adam, great stuff is always man. Another unpredictable week coming
up in the NFL, that is a guarantee. Thanks so much, Adam.
We'll talk to you next Saturday.

Speaker 3 (24:55):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (24:55):

the UCLA game, is they get ready for Colorado, who,
by the way, is coming into the Rose Bowl. They
supposedly sold out the Rose Bowl for this game. I

(25:40):
don't know how many people actually show up.

Speaker 9 (25:41):
There's an asterisk there because they're still gonna have a
couple of tarps. They've taken some of the tarps out,
but there will be around seventy thousand people.

Speaker 2 (25:48):
There will be seventy thousand people for UCLA football game.

Speaker 9 (25:51):
Again, there's a discrepancy between how many tickets were got sold, yes, yeah,
and then how many actually show up.

Speaker 2 (25:58):
And you know, Los.

Speaker 9 (25:58):
Angeles and if it's it's only convenient, yeah, people going
to Actually.

Speaker 2 (26:02):
When people see it, tenants figures it's tickets sold. Yeah,
it's not butts in seats. Let's make it clear. So
but that's gonna be exciting today and we'll see how
that happens. You got UCLA on the right track.

Speaker 9 (26:14):
Yeah, I think that they're going to win this game
by three or four touchdowns. And I hope I'm not
eating my words after the game. So they're on the record,
right now yeah, on the record, right now, well, USC
football is on the record for some predictable play ie
not playing well. They're trailing right now in the third
quarter of the number twenty four ranked Trojans they've lost

(26:36):
to already this season. A third is in the realm
of possibility, down to cal at col twenty eight to
twenty three, and yet twelve minutes remaining in the third quarter.
There Number fourteen Notre Dame is showing no mercy against
Pittsburgh fifty seven to seven. Fourth quarter. There that one
is out of reach. Number seven Texas hoping to do

(26:58):
just that against BYU with a long horn, trying to
get to seven to one on the season, own a
twenty eight to six advantage in the fourth quarter. There,
Number one Georgia is mincing up Florida thirty six to thirteen,
about seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, and then
the Gators will be out of their misery. As far
as completed games, one major upset and it went down

(27:21):
in Lawrence, Kansas, where the Jayhawks, after a couple of
turnovers in the fourth quarter, found away late to stun
Number six Oklahoma thirty eight to thirty to three, giving
the sooners their first loss of the season. Number ten
Pens stayed on shaky ground, almost lost, but did score
nine points late in the fourth quarter to avert an

(27:42):
upset thirty three to twenty four victorious. They were at
home against Indiana Number eight Oregon just put the finishing touches,
laying the SmackDown on number thirteen Utah thirty five to six.
Number four Florida State forty one, wake four sixteen. So
the seminar out to eight and five on the season.
But as they get it back to you, Steven Ephram,

(28:05):
it is not an easy feat for teams to go
into Utah and win. If you take out the pandemic year,
the shortened season in twenty twenty. Utah has not lost
at home since twenty eighteen, but.

Speaker 2 (28:18):
They've gone the entire year without their starting quarterback.

Speaker 9 (28:22):
But even how good their defense is, it just shows
you how much better Organs offense.

Speaker 2 (28:27):
Yeah exactly, I mean Utah. This is i'man Coach of
the Year type stuff. Because you thought you were going
to get your starting quarterback. Now he's gone for the year.
They've completely written him off. Uty gets that big win
against sc last week that beat UCLA. The hell of
a coach.

Speaker 9 (28:46):
Kyle Winningham never misses a day at the gym either.
I want my coach to be working out eight days
a week. If you tell that did trip Kelly to
his face sees that's a shot fired.

Speaker 2 (29:00):
Well, I'm just I'm just saying. I mean, you look
at Chip Kelly and Kyle Wenningham. I mean yeah, I
mean there's I don't know, let me let me ask.
Let's let's let's talk to at this, Ephraim. Do you
feel like you just naturally have more respect for a
head coach or an assistant coach that keeps himself in
physical shape than the one that doesn't.

Speaker 3 (29:23):
No, you don't care.

Speaker 5 (29:27):
You just want them to understand the game, and you
know you have trust in them. Whether they eat Philly
Cheese steaks or keen Wa salads, you know, it doesn't
matter as long as I believe that you can help
us win.

Speaker 2 (29:43):
I mean there have been some.

Speaker 9 (29:45):
I mean, when I'm taking orders from a coach, I
want Rob Ryan to tell me how to work out
and tell me to do that extra sprint. When I
watch Rob Ryan, that's the guy that I want him
to give me advice on how to work out well.

Speaker 2 (29:59):
Again, and when we think back to like Charlie Wise,
God who they termed started had the frontal ass is
basically what they said. What about the old kids and
a guy, by the way, who never Mark Mangino. Yeah yeah,
but I mean White's never even played football. He was
a student at Notre Dame. He never actually played the game,

(30:23):
and he paid no some I was somebody told me
one time that somebody walked in on Charlie Wise. I
don't know if it was a player a recruit, and
he literally was sitting at his desk in his office. Yeah,
and he is literally covered in crumbs from chess, like

(30:45):
is Belly's haying And it's just you know, like he's
finished a bag, but half the bag is on his shirt.

Speaker 3 (30:50):
It happens.

Speaker 2 (30:51):
But I mean, I don't know. I mean, if you're
an athlete, right, I mean, you are doing everything in
you're to work hard, and there's some guy barking at you,
look look to you get off and you're looking at
this guy like, dude.

Speaker 5 (31:07):
I'll take salent. Nah, I'll tell you when it makes
a difference. If you're strength and conditioning coach is out
of shape.

Speaker 2 (31:14):
Well, is there such a thing as a strengthened.

Speaker 3 (31:16):
Now you have lost it, now you've lost it. It's like,
I'm good.

Speaker 2 (31:21):
Most of these coaches are in pretty good shape, most
of them. That's the only I'm not saying Kyle Whittingham shape.
But you know, I don't know. I don't know from
a Again, if you're if you're a genius and you
and you know the game, well, you know, Leech was
one of those guys, right, never played the game, but

(31:41):
he was like this offensive genius, and obviously I had
respect for that. So but I just asked for as
a player, does it good shape?

Speaker 3 (31:50):
You should be a coach?

Speaker 4 (31:52):
No.

Speaker 2 (31:54):
No, I have proven for many, many years how little
I actually know. I think I know a lot. I
feel like I know a lot, right, But there's always
some new spin on things that I miss.

Speaker 9 (32:05):
Unless you're Mike McDaniel and you're a coach in college
of the NFL, you are going to be huffing and
puffing from the sideline to the locker room at the half.

Speaker 2 (32:13):
That's just how it is.

Speaker 9 (32:14):
These guys don't really have a time to work out. Yeah, yeah,
because they're watching film and they're getting two hours of sleep.
I mean, I remember the end the last year for
Jim Mora. Jimora was sleeping at UCLA in his office.

Speaker 3 (32:28):
Oh, most of the coaches sleep in their office.

Speaker 2 (32:29):
Yeah, that's the last time Andy Reid did a set up.
What do you think.

Speaker 3 (32:35):
Right now?

Speaker 2 (32:36):
The guys one of the greatest coaches in history.

Speaker 3 (32:39):
And by the way, sounds like a lot of fat
shaming going on here.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
Look I'm talking his genius, right yeah, I mean, right
now we are looking at a rematch, are we not?
Of the Eagles and the Chiefs? With the forty nine
Ers suddenly unraveling the last couple of weeks. By the way,
you do you buy into all these rumors that Kirk
Cousins was on auditioning for the forty nine ers job.

(33:04):
He has a history of College Shanahan back to their
Washington days.

Speaker 3 (33:09):
No, they have a quarterback.

Speaker 2 (33:12):
He hasn't looked as great the last guy.

Speaker 3 (33:14):
I have a quarterback?

Speaker 2 (33:15):
Do they have a quarterback?

Speaker 3 (33:17):
They got a quarterback.

Speaker 2 (33:17):
I mean they got the quarterback at the right price, obviously,
Kirk Cousins, and he'll be.

Speaker 3 (33:21):
The right price for the next three four years.

Speaker 2 (33:25):
So you're not concerned that teams have finally maybe figured
out Rock Purty because I was trumpeting his you know,
stature for five.

Speaker 5 (33:34):
Weeks, lost two games one of them. You know, he
put the team in position to win.

Speaker 3 (33:39):
It's how did he look?

Speaker 2 (33:41):
How did he look to you last week?

Speaker 5 (33:43):
He's okay? You know, he's okay. He looks like a
quarterback in the NFL. How's Josh Allen looked?

Speaker 2 (33:53):
Josh Allen needs an offensive line, Josh Allen needs a
running game. The Bills are over it, right.

Speaker 3 (34:00):
Herbert, Look, you can ask how everyone's looked.

Speaker 2 (34:03):
Justin Herbert is Philip Rivers two point.

Speaker 5 (34:05):
Patrick Mahomes hasn't always been as sharp as we were,
like so.

Speaker 2 (34:09):
But he finds waste. Yeah, I mean that's what separates
them from the rest of the pack.

Speaker 3 (34:13):
Different.

Speaker 2 (34:13):
He is the outlier, right, I mean there are no
wide receiver core the subpar this year, and yet there's
still six in one. Yeah, they're finding ways to win,
all right. Coming up on the other side, it is
that time for me to update you on where I
stand in the Heisman chase.

Speaker 3 (34:31):
Let me get do you have a Heisman vote?

Speaker 2 (34:32):
I actually have a vote? It matters. Coming up next,
Steve Hartman, he from Salom Fox Football Saturday, coming live

Speaker 1 (34:58):
Time countdown Heisman watch.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
All right, before we get to my Heisman update, Lorena,
you're all decked out. Who who are you supposed to be?
Is what we want to know?

Speaker 3 (35:18):
Crayon right? Crayon?

Speaker 2 (35:20):
Yes, he from ten points there it is. She's a crayon.
I'm a I'm the color blue. I thought it was obvious, Brandon,
What did you.

Speaker 3 (35:28):
Think I was?

Speaker 2 (35:29):
I thought she was Ramona Flowers from Scott Pilgrim. I
thought you just said she was Danny G. Everyone, He
says danny G to everybody? Who are you Danny G?
But see, we need you to dress up. I am.
I'm going to be dressing up as a TV sports
anchor here in about ten minutes. I can't wait to
see it. Yes, I'm going to move into that is
it crayon?

Speaker 3 (35:50):
A crayon?

Speaker 2 (35:51):
Who says?

Speaker 4 (35:51):
What?

Speaker 3 (35:52):
It's a crayon?

Speaker 2 (35:54):
Crayon? Let me ask you this is it an almond
or an almonds?

Speaker 3 (36:00):
Olmen?

Speaker 2 (36:02):
Is it almonmon? Amen or almond? All right? Each week
I give you an update of where I stand because
I do have a Heisman vote. Do you in the
Heisman chase? Indeed I do. Here is my current number three.

Speaker 10 (36:17):
Go back to throw, gonna go fade route for tes
he's got in these stores. Tess Jackson, back's shoulder, left
hand cornerly in zone, perfect troll.

Speaker 3 (36:30):
Brother to brother.

Speaker 2 (36:32):
Bo Knicks, quarterback of Oregon is my number three. He
is still completing close to eighty percent of his passes
this season. Again, they're one loss against Washington on the
road today, by the way, in their win on the
road against Utah twenty four to thirty and forty eight yards,
two touchdowns and no picks. Bo Nicks, Oregon quarterback, is

(36:53):
my current number three. Here is my number two.

Speaker 11 (36:57):
Second down in sixteen for Michigan for the Spartan twenty
two yard by JJ had a shotgup Spartans, jump off
side JJ back to pass, you can take a shot,
fires to the ends, all talk touchdown Polston Lovelin.

Speaker 2 (37:10):
That would be Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy at number two.
First time he has made my list. Heart ignore a
guy leading the nation and passing efficiency for a team
that's eight to zero. The only thing holding me back
is who have they beat? Everybody? They played exactly? They're
off this week. But JJ McCarthy, Michigan quarterback is my

(37:31):
number two. Here is my current number one.

Speaker 3 (37:34):
Motion, Jalen Pulk to the inside of the formation.

Speaker 8 (37:37):
Snap Pennix fakes to the flat. Now he's gonna throw
down field, looks wide open.

Speaker 3 (37:41):
Giles TAXI got it.

Speaker 2 (37:43):
Tuxtown, Washington.

Speaker 1 (37:44):
Michael Pennicks throw it on the road for the Huskies
marks right down the field twenty six yards.

Speaker 2 (37:51):
Michael Pennocks, junior Washington quarterback remains my number one. However,
for the second time this seas he's had a game
without a touchdown pass. Now, I'd have to look this
one up. It's been a long time since a quarterback
won the Heisman Trophy with two games in which he
had zero touchdown passes. I have to concede. Last week

(38:14):
we were talking about Marvin Harrison Junior. He was close.
I was really trying to break down his numbers to
get him into the top three. Did not quite make it.
But I can honestly say it's one of those years,
and we've had years like this where we head into
November and whoever I have now, none of these guys

(38:36):
could be on the list in a couple of weeks.
It is that close right now.

Speaker 3 (38:39):
What about the kid from Florida State.

Speaker 2 (38:42):
He's on the CUSP as well. He's getting there, He's
getting there. But bo Nicks played well on the road
against Utah. Utah doesn't his own games.

Speaker 3 (38:53):
You had a guy in there who didn't even play
this week.

Speaker 2 (38:55):
So I'm just saying, well, Jaj McCarthy. A lot of
Michigan fans like war Is. McCarthy's leading the nation and passing.
He's undefeated in the list, So you collapse under the
precious seventy eight percent completion. I'm going, hey, you're up
to the mini. Remember up to the minute, he's my
number two. I don't vary from my current up to
the date up to the minute. And yes, I did

(39:17):
look hard at bo Nick said it looked indifferent today,
or Oregon had a narrow win, they blew them out
in Utah. I'm just against a really good defense.

Speaker 3 (39:25):
Just trying to figure out what the parameters here.

Speaker 2 (39:28):
I don't know it, but I'm saying to the fact
that I don't feel confident in this current treo. I mean,
let's go back to Michigan. I mean, Michigan, who do
they play. They're gonna play Penn State coming up here
in a couple of weeks. Penn State doesn't look great.
It's really going to come down to that Ohio State
game and the Big Ten Championship game if Michigan gets there,

(39:48):
whether or not JJ McCarthy can win the Heisman Trophy.
Not every Heisman Trophy winner is one for the ages.
Not everyone's like Joe Burrow. You know, it's one of
those years where you throw fifty touchdowns and your team
is just dominating. You know, those are the easy years.
Every once in a while you have a year like
you sort of hold your nose and like.

Speaker 3 (40:05):
Okay, this one of those years.

Speaker 2 (40:08):
Right now, it's not a great year. I can tell
you someone that has voted for this word a number
of times.

Speaker 3 (40:13):
Top prospects for quarterbacks for the next level.

Speaker 2 (40:16):
I'd love to get a non quarterback in there once again.

(41:14):
about the World Series. Ephraim, I don't know that you. Yeah, well,
I watched last night. It was a Friday night and
there wasn't a whole lot going on. My son was
at a wedding. His mother decided to go to the wedding. OK.
I'm not sure why she was there, but that left
me alone at the house and I thought, all right.

(41:37):
Game one of the World Series turn out to be
a hell of a game. I mean, it had everything
that makes baseball postseason special, dramatics, bottom of the ninth inning,
home team down by two, Corey Seeger. Just when you
see a guy just hit the ball right on the numbers,

(41:57):
bang ties the game and then talk about names. So
I'm listening to the broadcast, Garcia, this guy has been
unbelievable for the Rangers, right, he has twenty two runs.
Bad it in his first name is spelled A d
O l I S. I heard the same announcer pronounce
it four different ways during the course of the game.

(42:18):
He had adulas a dolls, a dollas a dollas a
d l I S. Garcia, I'm going to go with
because I'm gonna have to use it on TV tonight.
I'm going to go with aduls adults. Adulas sounds right
to me. Okay, but it was. It was incredible, right, and.

Speaker 3 (42:42):
No one's watching, No nobody is.

Speaker 2 (42:46):
Now. I know you've been watching MBA. You watch the
Lakers look predictably ordinary on the road against Denver. Yeah,
you saw Anthony Davis's zero points in the second half.

Speaker 3 (42:58):
Yeah, yeah I did. Yeah, Yeah, I didn't like that, but.

Speaker 2 (43:01):
Yeah, and the joker doing a number on them, and
it looked exactly like it.

Speaker 5 (43:05):
Did last player in college, I mean, excuse me, in
the NBA, guest player in the association.

Speaker 2 (43:10):
But it didn't look any different than once they get
swept the Lakers.

Speaker 3 (43:13):
It didn't.

Speaker 2 (43:14):
There's there's no change. And then they came back on one.
But I know you're watching some NBA. You're telling me,
what is the last time, if ever you can remember
actually watching every game of the World Series as a kid?
Did you watch the World Series?

Speaker 3 (43:32):
What was it? Uh?

Speaker 5 (43:33):
I remember watching The first time I actually really watched
baseball was eighty seven with.

Speaker 2 (43:39):
Old Hersheiser eighty eight eighty eight, Yeah, uh, Dodgers a's
Kirk Gibson and.

Speaker 5 (43:46):
You know, so I was like, oh, wow, this is exciting.
You know, LA was buzzing and yeah. And but I
was never really a baseball guy. Didn't play as a youth.
I didn't really get into baseball until a couple of
years ago when I started coaching my kids in baseball.
And and I have the utmost respect for it. I

(44:08):
love of coaching it. We won the nine U Championship
over at Sherman Oak's Little League game.

Speaker 2 (44:17):
All right, well, let me slow you down for a
second here, because you're coaching kids that I assume have
some interest in baseball. Yeah, because that's what they say
about baseball. For someone in my generation that actually remembers
when baseball ruled the world.

Speaker 3 (44:31):
Oh, it doesn't rule anything now, but it hasn't.

Speaker 2 (44:33):
But back in the day it did. I mean the
seventy five World Series between the Reds and the Red Sox.
He had Pete Rose and he had Fredlin, all these
great players. It's like forty million people watching every game.

Speaker 3 (44:45):
Nothing else on.

Speaker 2 (44:46):
Well, the NFL was there, but the NFL wasn't anywhere
near it. But now I think they did a poll.
This is the recent poll about what is the sport
you watch first your first choice identified as a sports fan. Okay,
as a sports fan, the NFL got thirty four percent,

(45:07):
NBA twelve percent, baseball got nine.

Speaker 3 (45:10):
Yeah, that's that's that's accurate.

Speaker 5 (45:12):
First of all, it's too many games, one hundred and
sixty one hundred and sixty five games.

Speaker 2 (45:18):
On sixty two in the regular season, then four rounds
of the playoffs.

Speaker 5 (45:21):
And they play at Wednesday at eleven am. Sometimes they
just the All Star Game is on the weekday. Like
what was none of this translates to viewership. They have
a problem marketing baseball. Well, I've asked this baseball doesn't

(45:43):
really speak English that well, oh.

Speaker 2 (45:45):
He doesn't speak English. I've never heard him.

Speaker 5 (45:46):
So so when you have all of the inlook baseball
as a tremendous as as a tremendous sport, it's unbelievable,
and it doesn't resonate with youth to a certain age.
First of all, soccer and baseball are the two sports

(46:07):
that kids play in this country. First, because you can
do that the youngest. I believe. At soccer you can
start at four, and baseball is right around that five
six year old. With te ball, you know even younger
some places. So parents get their kids out there and
they get them active, and some of the kids are good,
and you move on and you continue going on. But

(46:28):
as you get older, like a lot of my kids
in baseball, I also had them in basketball, right as
you get older, and the only currency as young people
becomes popularity. It's not about money, it's not about any
of that. It's about attention and popularity. And so as

(46:51):
you grow, let me ask you this, when's the last
time you went to a high school baseball game.

Speaker 2 (46:58):
Even when I was in high school in the mid seventies,
you didn't. Football was number one. If you were on
the football team. If you were the quarterback of the
football team, you are big man on campus.

Speaker 5 (47:11):
Kids feel that energy. Yes, I remember in high school baseball.
The baseball games were being played during sixth period. Yes,
no one was even out of school to go to
the game.

Speaker 2 (47:21):
My high school had great baseball. Robin Yaut, the Hall
of Famer, went to my high school. We had a
really good baseball team, and our football team wasn't that great.
But believe me, the football.

Speaker 5 (47:32):
The whole town, the whole cities at the games, basketball,
pep rallies, the gym is packed. Baseball it's parents and
a few scouting coaches at the games in high school,
and that resonates with young people where popularity is their
biggest currency.

Speaker 2 (47:50):
Baseball Hall of Famer Dave Winfield was a multi sport star.
He was drafted in the NBA, played basketball at the
University of Minutes Soda football. He was six ' six
he could have played football. He ended up playing baseball
and made the Hall of Fame. I asked him, when
you had to make that decision when you had options

(48:12):
in which sport to choose, He goes, it was a
no brainer. I knew I could play baseball longer than
any other sport. In other words, giving me a longer
career as an athlete, which coincides with more money in
my pocket over the course of a longer career. He
ended up playing twenty two seasons in Major League Baseball.
You do not see guys playing twenty two years in

(48:33):
the NFL. No, so, Bruce ma But that's but I mean,
he made the right decision, Yeah, he goes. If you
can hit a curveball, see that's that's you can get
a really good athlete sitting there against fastballs and he
can hit him. Can he hit a major league breaking ball?
Because when that thing's coming in you and breaking a foot.

(48:56):
I agree, not everybody can do that. It's rarefied air.
It can actually do that.

Speaker 3 (49:01):
It is.

Speaker 2 (49:02):
But like I said, Michael Jordan hit two two on
the miners.

Speaker 5 (49:07):
Kids want to be popular, right. The sports that are
popularized and polarized in this country are basketball and football.
Basketball commercials, football commercials, very few baseball commercials.

Speaker 2 (49:25):
I don't know why think about this, Think about how
much money these baseball players are making.

Speaker 5 (49:29):
Baseball doesn't have the marketing genius behind their machine.

Speaker 3 (49:34):
And how are they.

Speaker 2 (49:34):
Paying so much money to these players? Then where's all
this money coming from?

Speaker 3 (49:38):
I have zero idea.

Speaker 5 (49:39):
I really don't know, So that that to me, I'm
still baffled. I will tell you this, it's.

Speaker 2 (49:46):
I know the NBA money is coming from China. Well,
I mean that's a different story.

Speaker 5 (49:49):
Well, you got to look at baseball as an international
sport as well. Yes, it is so, and it's along
those lines because the majority of MLB, well I don't
want to say majority, but a large portion of the
MLG of MLB players are not American born, right, So
it's a got kids in other countries dreaming to get

(50:12):
an opportunity to get to the MLB. It's the opposite
here by in terms of numbers and by the masses.

Speaker 2 (50:19):
But we do have Major League Baseball. Yeah, from a
revenue standpoint, even if the numbers don't hold up, I
guess the tenants was up slightly this year around Major
League Baseball. I mean San Diego is a prime example,
the prime They had a subpar season, they're selling out Petco,
they spent a ton of money on big name players,
and the city of San Diego, which only has one

(50:41):
major sport, bought into it and they're buying tickets for
the games.

Speaker 3 (50:45):
Yeah they are. I mean, it's it's.

Speaker 5 (50:49):
Especially if you can get like the ballpark co Park
and it's a weather it's it's just it's just amazing.
It's amazing. So yeah, you that's an experience. You'd go
there and you'd have a good time and it's fun.

Speaker 2 (51:02):
There's something about being at a ballpark that's a lot
different than being at a football stadium or a basketball arena.
It's a different atmosphere.

Speaker 3 (51:11):
It is, it really is.

Speaker 2 (51:12):
And baseball is not a TV sport. Hockey fans know
this as well. Hockey is hockey. If you can't see
the game on television, line changes everything else. By the way,
Caleb Williams and USC they're battling right now, Do we
have a final on that or is that still going on?
End of the third quarter and USC is still trailing
COL by a score of thirty six to twenty nine.

(51:35):
All right, We're going to continue to update you on
the football scene, college football scene, but also some big
games in the NFL. What to make of this sudden
demise of the San Francisco forty nine ers. Will break
it down. This is Fox Football Saturday. I love this.
Steve harbin E from Salam Fox Sports Saturday. We're coming

(51:56):
live from the Tyraq dot com studios and we're in
the final stretch to get to think it's the Hearts
Racing's biggest moment of the year. The world's best are
headed to San Anita for Breeders' cuple World Championships on
November third and fourth. The countdown begins now get tickets
today at Breeders Cup dot Com. We're about a half
an hour away from kickoff Ucla and Colorado. I just

(52:18):
saw Chip Kelly talking to Dion Sanders at midfield and
I could get the sense of what he was saying.
He basically said to him, thank you for finally filling
this place up, because we've been playing home games with
less than half capacity here at this gigantic Rose Bowl,

(52:38):
and because you guys showed up, we actually sold some tickets.
So I think he was thanking Dion Sanders for all
the height. Now, as far as Colorado's concerned, they are
one in three in conference play there four and three overall,
so in other words, they've lost three of their last
four games, and it really doesn't matter because we said

(53:01):
this early in the year. I mean, this is just
the reality of a team that just doesn't have any defense,
doesn't have a lot of depth. They have some obviously
really skilled players, and by the way, I'm hoping Shudur
Sanders stays another year. I'd like to see this guy
because I think a year from now they'll be significantly better,

(53:21):
and especially at a conference where well you know they're
going into the Big twelve. So we'll see that how
that plays out. But now that we're halfway more than
halfway through the season, give us a little breakdown on
exactly what Dion Sanders coming to Colorado has meant for
FBS football this year.

Speaker 5 (53:41):
Well, what it did was it it shifted the attention
to you know, real coaching culture building. It's it's not
about the wins and losses. Immediately when you get an coach,
the first thing they want to do is you got

(54:03):
to win the conference. You got to do this, you
got to do that. Colorado was the worst Division One
team in the nation last year at one and eleven.
Deon Sanders comes in has a tremendous turnover fifty three
students out of the transfer portal, only three returning starters.

(54:26):
And so you're at a position where how was this
going to work? If deon, if they go to a bowl,
it's a tremendous success. But what it did was it
shined a spotlight on culture building. It shined a spotlight

(54:46):
on like true coaching outside of the x'es and o's,
and it really galvanized people. It made people who didn't
watch college football watch college football.

Speaker 2 (55:01):
All right, So his credits harp the other day, seventeen
penalties in a game undisciplined football. You know there are
always going to be people that are going to take shots.

Speaker 3 (55:12):
Well, look at he.

Speaker 2 (55:15):
Is flash and yes, you got a great quarterback and
you got some talented players on your team. But you're
losing a couple of close games because your team is
lacking discipline in the late stages of games when they
need to hold things together. How much is that a
reflection on him? How much is that just basic immaturity
of college kids.

Speaker 3 (55:35):
So think about this.

Speaker 5 (55:37):
If you have fifty three new players on a team
that just got there a few months ago, yeah, came
from all over the country, you'd have to be a
miracle worker to have everyone on the same page, right,
have everyone buy in at the exact same time time

(56:00):
of the culture and the standards you're trying to set.
It's nearly impossible. So trying to hold this impossible standard
up to Dion Sanders because he speaks in a way
and he teaches in the way that exudes confidence. It's
a ridiculous thing.

Speaker 2 (56:20):
And the thing about Dion is, first of all, you're
not the player he was unless you have discipline. Oh,
you got to be the fact that he was able
to do two sports. Only guy ever to play in
a World Series and a Super Bowl. That's insane discipline.
Let's double the discipline if you could actually dedicate yourself
to play at the highest level into professional sports. So

(56:42):
I agree with you, it's a problem. That's why I
just hope, hope that he can hold his team together
next year.

Speaker 5 (56:50):
I think he can hold the team together. Just think
about the five star recruits are the transfer guys who
will now be there on the offense and defensive lines. Right,
He's going to get some big time recruits and transfers
to man that defensive line. He's going to get some

(57:11):
big hogs as we'd like to call our offensive lineman
to be able to stand up in protection. And this
is one year. This is not even a year. It's
been a few months of Dion Sanders being there. But
we've seen the culture change, we've seen the community change,
and we've seen college football change.

Speaker 2 (57:28):
All Right, Speaking of coaches, do you know which game
this week in the NFL the two teams have the
best current combined record. The answer is Jacksonville at Pittsburgh.
Oh wow, the five and two Jags going against the
four and two Steelers. Doug Peterson had to clean up
the mess from Urban Meyer got that team to the

(57:49):
playoffs in one year, and after a one and two start,
they've rolled over four straight opponents. They're on pace. And
then there's Mike Tomlin. Mike Tomlin, How this Pittsburgh is
four and two? There is one answer, Mike Tomlin. Culture,
Mike Tomlin coachre Man. I don't know why it is.

(58:09):
Maybe it's because he's one of only three coaches the
Steelers have had since nineteen sixty nine, with Chuck Noll
and Bill Kower and Mike Tomlin. Maybe it's an organizational
thing why he doesn't get credit this man has never
had a losing season. He is going to be in
the Hall of Fame. And last year I thought he

(58:30):
did the best coaching job in the NFL to get
that team. Oh yeah, with a rookie quarterback who's not
putting up flashy numbers to a winning record. And he's
doing it again this year. So when you least culture,
that's but that's the Tomlin way, right. You look at
this team. Kenny Pickett is a guy. There's nothing special

(58:53):
about Kenny Pickett yet.

Speaker 3 (58:55):
Pickins yes, Pickett no.

Speaker 2 (58:56):
But when these games come down to the wire, Mike
Tomlin knows how to pull it out. So what is
it about Mike Tomlin? You played against Mike Tomlin. This
guy's been around a long time. Ay, why is he
such an effective coach? And b why doesn't he get
the recognition that he has earned.

Speaker 5 (59:16):
I think he's a special coach because the trust that
he has with his players. He knows that there is
no sugarcoating, no bullcrap being shoveled. He is going to
talk to you and treat you like a man, even
if you're not ready to be one. And that's a
big thing most people think. Once you get to the NFL.
You're ready to go, you're grown man. No, there's still

(59:37):
kids being drafted into the NFL who don't know what
being a professional is. Mike Tomlin is someone who can
help that. Someone does. Yeah, Le'Veon Bell, Yeah, Ben Roethlisberger.

Speaker 2 (59:52):
People that unravel when they leave, look when they're under
his tutel.

Speaker 3 (59:58):
The stand it together.

Speaker 5 (59:59):
He sets a standard. He needs a straight shooter. And
we see a similar effect that the Dionna is having
in Colorado. It's the trust. If you can gain the
trust level of your locker room then and management at
the same time, then you have something special. It's usually

(01:00:19):
either or you know, management believes in locker room guys don't,
so on and so forth.

Speaker 3 (01:00:24):
But you know it.

Speaker 5 (01:00:26):
Mike Tomlin, what he's been able to do in his
tenure there has been tremendous and the fact that we
don't praise him more or speak about it more, it
baffles me. But trust me, as long as he wants
to coach, he'll have a job in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 3 (01:00:42):
They know what they have.

Speaker 2 (01:00:43):
By the way, the second best matchup based on records
Browns of the Seahawks. Who would have thought both teams
sitting at foreign too. Who would have thought so Deshaun
Watson's been sitting doesn't matter.

Speaker 3 (01:00:55):
Nope.

Speaker 2 (01:00:56):
And Seattle to you before last season when they dealt
away Russell Wilson, I said, it's over. You got a
seventy year old coach. What is he going to start
over again? But you talk about another guy with no
let up a culture Pete Carroll in Seattle, Geno Smith,

(01:01:17):
I didn't even know he was still playing when he
started last season. I go, is he still in the league,
made the Pro Bowl and he's doing again this.

Speaker 5 (01:01:26):
Year's still cooking? Is culture is belief. But it goes
back to the coaching.

Speaker 2 (01:01:31):
See a lot of people dismiss coaching at the professional level.
In the college level, the coaches are the stars, whether
it's college football, college basketball, the coaches are the stars
because the players come and go. But in the professional ranks,
most coaches are just dismissed.

Speaker 3 (01:01:49):
Yeah, I think because how many.

Speaker 2 (01:01:51):
Make a difference. Well, in the case of Mike Tomlin
and Pete Carroll, there are others, obviously, but those guys
make a different look.

Speaker 5 (01:02:00):
And it's not just about making a difference, it's about
continually and continuously making a difference, Right, You.

Speaker 2 (01:02:12):
Can write a good quarterback for a long time, Bill Belichick, But.

Speaker 5 (01:02:15):
What happens when he's gone and he's not in the
building anymore? Can you continue making that difference?

Speaker 3 (01:02:25):
Right?

Speaker 5 (01:02:26):
And it's tough to do when you don't have that
guy under center.

Speaker 2 (01:02:31):
Big Ben leaves Pittsburgh's still winning, Russell Wilson leaves Seattle
still winning.

Speaker 3 (01:02:39):
And that is hard to do.

Speaker 2 (01:02:40):
That is really hard to do. But those two guys
are getting it done. All right, let's find out what
is trending right now. Kevin Wyre just sort of step
into the building. What's going on?

Speaker 7 (01:02:49):
Just walking right in here.

Speaker 2 (01:02:51):
And look up and I was like, everyone's wearing these
halloween costumes today and we had to guess who they are.
And I'm like, are you dressing Kevin Wired today?

Speaker 3 (01:03:00):
Yes?

Speaker 7 (01:03:01):
Well, earlier I played in a flag football game, a
beach flag football game, so I dressed as a football
player hurt my knees, so I kind of have a
little bit of a real life experience on what that's like.

Speaker 2 (01:03:11):
So but you haven't retired yet yet.

Speaker 7 (01:03:15):
I like that, And unlike Kawhi Leonard, I show up
when I'm hurt.

Speaker 2 (01:03:18):
So wow, Wow, let's take it a shot at a
Clipper fan in the house.

Speaker 7 (01:03:24):
All right, we do have a full slate of college
football action. We do have a handful of games in progress.
We're looking at the game going up in Berkeley. Number
twenty four USC and col And. It's been a rough
couple of weeks for the Trojans. That got blown out
by Notre Dame. They lost a tough one to Utah
and they're on the road at Cala game. They were
hoping to get back on the right track end despite

(01:03:45):
a couple of touchdowns from Caleb Williams. He's also thrown
for three hundred and forty nine yards. It's the Trojans
behind by seven. It's forty three to thirty six in
favor of the Golden Bears. They got about eleven minutes
to go in the fourth quarter. Some other games just
getting started. Number five Washington with an early seven to
nothing lead over Stanford. They're about midway through the first

(01:04:06):
nineteenth rank Air Force looking to stay undefeated. They're on
the road at their rival Colorado State. It's the Falcons leading.
It's seven to nothing, about five minutes left in the
first there. Number twenty one Tennessee had ten nothing lead
over Kentucky about three fifteen to go in that first quarter.
Some games that have gone final the world's largest outdoor
cocktail party, but the Gators, not in a partying moved

(01:04:27):
the top rank. Georgia Bulldogs steamroll them forty three to twenty.
The upset of the day, though, came in the Big twelve.

Speaker 4 (01:04:36):
Three seconds separating Kansas from a moments of historical significance
three step drop. Gabriel steps up, lops to the end zone,
It's tipped to the air and knocked away. Kyu's gonna win, Kay,
You's gonna win. Oklahoma goes down.

Speaker 7 (01:04:53):
That was Brian Hanney on the Jayhawks Sports Network from
lear Field. The Jayhawks take down the six ranks Sooners
thirty eight to thirty three, and not only does that
get a win for Kansas, they're now just within a
game of the top spot in the Big twelve, they
now have the tiebreaker over Oklahoma. In the Big New
kickoff game, Number ten Penn State beats Indiana thirty three

(01:05:14):
to twenty four. Number seven Texas a dismantling a BYU
on their home stadium thirty five to six. In the
Pac twelve, we had a matchup that was much anticipated
Oregon in Utah. We thought this very well could determine
who will play in the PAC twelve Championship game. But
this one really wasn't much of a contest. Bo Nicks
a couple of touchdown tosses as the Ducks beat the

(01:05:37):
Utah Utes thirty five to six. Fourteenth ran Notre Dame
fifty eight to seven, winners over Pit Number eighteen, Louisville
shuts out Number twenty Duke twenty three to nothing, and
twenty second ranked two Lane holds on against Rice thirty
to twenty eight. And in the World Series we got
Game two with Texas on top of the Arizona Diamondbacks
won nothing in that best of seven series. We got
Game two getting started tonight, eight o'clock Eastern over on Fox.

Speaker 2 (01:06:02):
Beck to you, guys, Hi Ken, thank you very much.
Once again, this is Fox Football Saturday. We are coming
live from the tirerack dot Com studios. So when USC
and UCLA announced that they were moving to the Big
ten and now Washington and Oregon will join them, a
lot of people that were PAC twelve fans get a
little nervous about, like, wow, they're gonna be up against

(01:06:24):
it going into the Big Ten. Let's face any from
the PAC twelve this year is better than the Big
Ten this year. Oh yeah, and it's not even close.
I mean, you have Michigan, you have Ohio State, and
I think both those programs, I mean, Michigan is putting
up some lofty numbers, but again they haven't really played
anybody we watch. Penn State is not that great. Ohio

(01:06:46):
State's on the road against Wisconsin, Wisconsin's not there, Iowa.
You know the you know, the usual suspects that are
that next tier in the Big Ten. You look at these,
I mean Washington, Now, granted, Washington will have a new
quarter Oregon elevenue quarterback at different have a new quarterback.
That's cyclical, but it will be interesting to see who

(01:07:10):
adjust to who quicker. Will it be the existing Big
Ten teams adjusting to the West Coast teams coming in
or vice versa. In terms of who makes the quickest
adjustment next season, I.

Speaker 5 (01:07:23):
Think it'll be, you know, the teams that are already
in the Big Team to make the adjustment.

Speaker 2 (01:07:29):
First, they got to come out to the West Coast.

Speaker 5 (01:07:30):
For yeah, I get it, but coming out to the
West Coast that's not a bad thing to do. But
going back east November December, that's that's pretty tough.

Speaker 2 (01:07:42):
There was There was a time though, when the Rose
Bowl it's it's gone back and forth in terms back
in the day when it was a big big ten
versus Pac twelve matchup or Pac ten match up for
years there was sort of streaks on both sides out there.
I'm just going to be very interesting the logistics though,
of you know, flying a team from LA into Columbus

(01:08:04):
or I mean, what if you have a game at
Rutgers or Maryland or Penn State University Park. That's a
long haul, man. You know you'd be like, oh, Seattles, No,
that's not like going to Yeah, that's a long stay college,
long long way away. We'll see how that all plays out,

(01:08:24):
all right. So coming up here, we mentioned the NFL
and some of the games going on tomorrow. I want
to get back to the forty nine ers for a
second here, because you and I were trumpeting the fact
that the forty nine ers not only were the best
team five games into the season, but they had a
chance maybe go undefeated. I mean, we were talking in

(01:08:45):
those terms of a seemingly unstoppable offense and impact guys
on their defense as well. And now back to back
losses and the forty nine ers this week will a
Bengals team that is feeling a little better about themselves.

(01:09:06):
I mean, they're a five hundred team. The Bengals, by
the way, were my pick to be in the Super
Bowl this year. It didn't look too good with a
subpart Joe Burrow, but he seems to beginning his feet
right now. I just keep getting back to Brock party here, Ephraim.
I mean, did we because you and I were in
lockstep here trumpeting Brock Purty, challenging Adam Kaplan, who was

(01:09:26):
still skeptical about this kid. I mean, when you're winning
games big and everything is clicking, it's easy to sort
of look good. But how do you deal with adversity?
And it seems like that loss to the Browns showed
the way to get pretty off his mark. And I'm

(01:09:49):
sure every team moving forward is going to figure this out.

Speaker 5 (01:09:53):
The problem is every team doesn't have a front seven.
Well they don't like Cleveland. Does we have to keep
that in mind. We love to do that after a
quarterback our team struggles with well, everybody's gonna do it. Yeah,
everybody's not going to be able to put that type
of pressure. Everybody doesn't have a Miles Garrett, right, everybody
doesn't have that type of pressure and those type of dbs.

(01:10:17):
So let's keep that in mind when we're saying what
other teams are going to emulate. You look at brock
Party and he's you know, he's completing almost seventy percent
of his passes. He has eleven touchdowns, three interceptions. I'll
take that, brock Party. I'll take his numbers right now.
I mean it's almost seventeen hundred yards passing. I'm I'm

(01:10:40):
okay with still having brock Party lead our team. Now,
what we need to do defensively is we need to
pick it up because that's what the forty nine ers
are really built around, is that defense and their abilities
to put pressure on on other teams. That's what we

(01:11:03):
need to work on. We need to put more effort
into pressing and putting pressure on the passer.

Speaker 2 (01:11:11):
But let's get back. I mean, you mentioned Miles Garrett
and the Brown's defensive front one of the best in
the league. That's not the Vikings.

Speaker 3 (01:11:20):
No, it's no, I mean the Vikings.

Speaker 2 (01:11:22):
Hey, look, I mean the Vikings seem like the perfect
team to get back right fresh right the ship. Like
I said, against the Browns, guy missus a forty one
yard field goal could have stolen that game.

Speaker 5 (01:11:31):
Heir Cousins had a field day, no pressure back there
hitting Addison?

Speaker 3 (01:11:37):
Who was that right?

Speaker 2 (01:11:40):
But letting a cop Award winner a couple of years ago.

Speaker 5 (01:11:42):
Yeah, So what I'm saying is when you look at
a team like the forty nine ers, the thing they've
always hung their hat on when they didn't know who
was going to be the quarterback was their ability to
play defense and played at a high clip. We haven't
seen that the last few weeks. Now is that something
that they are going to adjust? And now a Kirk

(01:12:05):
Cousins doesn't have all day to fem apart. So it's
it's bigger than just the Brock party of it. In
the offense of it. You got to also remember in
that that Cleveland game, no Deebo Samuels, no Christian McCaffrey,
and a good portion of that you didn't have Trent Williams,
you know, best left tackle in football.

Speaker 3 (01:12:27):
So let's not let's not go crazy.

Speaker 5 (01:12:30):
With the you know it's over and no, no, right
still don't have Debo Samuels. But defensively, if you can
get back to playing forty nine or defense, the defense
that got Robert Salah his head coaching job, the defense
they got Dmiko Ryans his head coaching job. Right, there's

(01:12:51):
a standard that's been set there and that's what the
forty nine ers need to do is get back to
putting that type of pressure on opposing offenses.

Speaker 2 (01:13:01):
I don't buy it yet, Okay, you always break it
down nice. I'm trying to buy everything you're selling me here.
Something's not right. And I just feel like with Brock
Party and no one has been more of a Party
fan than I have. Really well, I just he was

(01:13:23):
his ability to throw accurately under pressure, his ability to
target the proper receiver, which is an instantaneous thing, accuracy,
these are all pluses. I'm like, he checks every box.
The one thing he had not faced was adversity. He
had the injury obviously in the NFC Championship game, so

(01:13:46):
that's not adversity. He was out of a game. But
you lose a game, you go to Minnesota against a
very middle of the road Vikings defense, and you played worse,
not better than he did. The week before, So we'll
see what happens going against a Bengals team that if
they want to stay in the chase, has to find

(01:14:07):
a way to win some games on the road.

Speaker 5 (01:14:09):
He only had nine incompletions two three for two hundred
and seventy two yards and completed seventy.

Speaker 2 (01:14:15):
Makes big plays at the end of the year when
he separates quarterbacks.

Speaker 3 (01:14:19):
Yeah, that is true. He picks that he had no
business throwing.

Speaker 5 (01:14:23):
Uh so in that that and they weren't three points
were they weren't?

Speaker 3 (01:14:28):
They were ugly?

Speaker 2 (01:14:28):
Okay, that's where you going, all right.

Speaker 3 (01:14:30):
And then we found out he was concussed. So there's that.
All right.

Speaker 2 (01:14:33):
We'll get you ready for some of the later games
on the college football scene and our best bets around
the NFL. This is Fox Football Saturday.

Speaker 4 (01:14:42):
Three seconds separating Kansas from the moments of historical significance.
Three step drop, Gabriel steps up, lops to the end zone,
It's tipped to the air.

Speaker 3 (01:14:51):
And knocked away. KU's gonna win.

Speaker 2 (01:14:53):
KU's gonna win.

Speaker 10 (01:14:55):
Oklahoma goes down and for the first time in near
thirty years, Kansas with a regular season Top ten victory.

Speaker 2 (01:15:06):
That's Brian Haney from lear Field. There it was the
upset of the day as Kansas knocks off undefeated number
six rank Oklahoma by a score of thirty eight to
thirty three. That is also our Progressive play of the day,
brought to you by Progressive Insurance. Progressive makes bundling easy

Fox Football Saturday Live from the tire Rack dot Com.
Students want to thank the crew today. We had the
dual threat on the updates today is Brian Finley and
Kevin Wyart handling that duty. We have Lorena who is

(01:15:51):
officially dressed as a crayon and doing an amazing job
doing that. That is phenomenal. Do you have a party
to go to tonight or no, I'm here till eleven, Steve,
So you did this for us on your own, on
your own.

Speaker 3 (01:16:06):
Ok.

Speaker 2 (01:16:06):
Yes, that is This is why she's the Rookie of
the Year, superstar that she is. Lorena, Thank you very
much and well Brennan is always loyal to San Diego.
To a fault. Let's put it down to a fault.

Speaker 3 (01:16:20):
What'd you do?

Speaker 5 (01:16:20):
What?

Speaker 2 (01:16:21):
Well, he's he's wearing the Padres cap and you know
you look at the Arizona Diamondbacks. They did this year
what the Padres could not finish last year. Knock off
the Phillies and get themselves into the World Series. So,
but your day will come. Did you did you go
to the Pottery's last World Series in nineteen ninety eight?

Speaker 12 (01:16:43):
No, but my dad did. This is a funny story.
So my dad had tickets to Game three, went to
Game three. He was sitting with a friend. Here's a
voice behind him, no joke, the seats directly behind him.
His dad was sitting like. They didn't plan it that way. Wow,
they showed up at thinks.

Speaker 3 (01:17:00):
So your dad and your grandfather.

Speaker 12 (01:17:02):
Basically went to the World Series together without even planning
the fact is.

Speaker 5 (01:17:06):
I don't know we need to dive into that relationship because.

Speaker 2 (01:17:11):
You would think for something as big as a World
Series ship, I mean, wouldn't you call your son and
be like, hey son, Yeah, it doesn't happen often the
batteries get to the World call your dad.

Speaker 3 (01:17:23):
I mean, I mean, what's going on here? And that's
that's a deeper coverage, by.

Speaker 2 (01:17:28):
The way, I did for both games three and four
as the Batteries got swept by the Yankees that year,
I sat in regular seats. I could have sat in
the press box. And now it's a World Series. I
had actual tickets for those games. Unfortunately, my buddy Trevor
Hoffman gave up that Scott broches so run.

Speaker 12 (01:17:44):
When I was doing intern work with San Jose Media Relations,
I did that for the stsu Cal football game back
in twenty sixteen, back when they had a respectable football team,
you know, and you weren't happy they weren't playing this Saturday.

Speaker 2 (01:17:56):
I'm I'm watching Colorado and they're opening drive against one
of the better defenses in the Pack twelve, that would
be UCLA, and they're motoring down the field.

Speaker 3 (01:18:07):
Motor, Motor, Motor.

Speaker 2 (01:18:09):
Should Sanders give give me a scatter report on shoulder Sanders,
something that you would recommend he work on to get
him better prepared for the next one.

Speaker 5 (01:18:19):
Getting rid of the football. He holds the ball too long, uh,
and he also utilizing his legs towards the line of scrimmage.
He has a lot of his problems, a lot of
long sacks and deep sacks because he bails out, he
spins outward and in the NFL, that's not gonna happen.

Speaker 3 (01:18:37):
Brother, You're not gonna be able to do that. So
he needs to attack.

Speaker 5 (01:18:40):
He needs to to to scramble towards the line of
scrimmage and also, uh, get rid of the ball. Man,
if it's not there first second read, then you have
to make a decision. You got to throw the ball
away or you got to attack with your legs. And
he doesn't do that because he's always looking for the
play down the field.

Speaker 2 (01:19:00):
Yeah, I don't understand if again, retreating backwards is never
a good idea, don't do it. Yeah. Did you ever
see the highlight once of the Hall of Famer Bob
Lilly the Dallas Cowboys and Super Bowl?

Speaker 3 (01:19:14):
I did, Bob.

Speaker 2 (01:19:16):
Greasy Hall of Fame quarterback. He sacked them for a
twenty nine yard loss. Have you ever seen a twenty
nine yard loss on a sack? No, it happened in
a Super Bowl. As a matter of fact, UCLA's defense
suddenly tightening up right there. Yeah, you give me the
irony about Ucla. By the way, they have a freshman quarterback,

(01:19:36):
Dante Moore, five star, who threw pick six'es and three
consecutive games. He got bench last week against Stanford, and
UCLA's offense really was efficient. That's again, Stanford's not great.
Neither is Colorado's defense. But you get nervous now with
these quarterbacks that are coming with a lot of hype
about putting them on the bench, and then the next
thing you know, they're like, yeah, I'm leaving telling it's

(01:20:00):
a tightrope for these coaches. You have to sort of
and Chip Kelly's been very coy in saying, well, he's
not really a starter. Usc has taken the lead. They
have come all the way back. They were down forty
three to twenty nine, but three straight touchdowns and they'd
taken a fifty to forty three lead over Cal three

(01:20:22):
and a half minutes to go.

Speaker 3 (01:20:25):
Hey man, they're still alive. They're still alive.

Speaker 2 (01:20:30):
I have one question for you Bears Chargers on Sunday night.

Speaker 3 (01:20:33):
Oh God, do we have to Chargers?

Speaker 2 (01:20:36):
