(00:32):
tire buying should be absolute jam pack show tonight we
are gonna cover it all. Take a look ahead the
Game two of the NBA Finals and what went wrong.
We've got some baseball stuff, we've got brand new food.
What my name will cover the full gamt gamut? Excuse me,

(00:53):
but what the hell? Let's waste no time and let's
get to the latest Caitlin Clark saga. And as you know,
I'm a Caitlin Clark fan. I've defended her. I've been
objective about her, but most people aren't. Most people are subjective.
So where am I going with this? Let me start

(01:14):
with this headline. If it can happen to Isaiah Thomas,
It can happen to Caitlin Clark. What am I talking about? Well,
when the committee constructed the nineteen ninety two Dream Team,
they wanted Michael Jeffrey Jordan on no uncertain term. So
they sent Jordan a text and or there was no texting.
Then they called him and said, Jordan can get can

(01:36):
we get your commitment? Well, fax me, fax me the roster.
That's what he did. Foxed me the roster. They faxed
him the roster in Isaiah Thomas's name was on there. No,
I don't think so. Well, they had a conundrum there,
so they said, well, wait, let's wait a minute, let's
shift the roster on. Let's fax him another roster that
had Isiah Thomas's name on it, and Jordane I don't

(01:57):
think so. They finally figured out and put two and
two together when Isaiah walked off the floor of the
nineteen ninety one playoffs, when the torch was handed and
they faxed the third roster in Isaiah's name was not that.
Jordan goes okay out play. You don't have to be
felleny to figure out what happened there. Jordan did not

(02:17):
want Isaiah on the team. If it can happen to
Charles Barkley, I guess it could happen to Caitlyn Clark.
I'll always be a little baffled. While back in the
nineteen eighty four Olympics, which were played in Los Angeles,
and I saw this Dream Team play, they weren't the
Dream Team then. By the way, if I never hear
the team termed Dream Team again, it'll be too soon.
Bobby Knight cut Charles Barkleton from the team. Now, I

(02:40):
don't care if Barkley was the round round mount to rebound,
he's for me to say. But this is a guy
who would block your shot at the rim and then
dunk it at the other end. Played ninety four feet.
He ran around the court like he was his pants
are on fire and it was raining gasoline. The dude
could play. He was a six to six stuff. But Charles,

(03:02):
it was believed by Bobby Knight, might disrupt the chemistry
of the team. He thought he had some defensive shortcomings
and he wasn't sharp in Bobby Knight's view, and he
thought he had a little bit of a laid back
attitude and practice sessions and he was late to a
couple of practices that did not sit well with Bobby Knight.
So if it can happen to Charles Barkley, it can happen,
and it can happen to Isaiah Thomas and John Stockton. Well,

(03:24):
I guess it could happen to Caitlin Clark, right, But
there seems to be a notion out there that Clark
didn't deserve to be on the team in the first
place based on merit. Okay, talk amongst yourselves, argue all
the hell you want. First of all, these decisions are
always subjective, so you could make a case for or
against just about anybody on the roster. Just look at

(03:46):
the roster. So let's do this. How about some statistics
and just relax out there and don't lose your mind.
I'm not advocating that you should be on the team,
nor would I advocate that you should be off the teaming.
You what I would consider to be journalistically objective truths.
You see, there are objective truths in our personal feelings.

(04:07):
For those who don't want Clark on the team, you're
up in your fields. Don't lie to yourself like cheat.
It's solitaire. For those who want Clark on the team.
You're up in your fields and you got you believe
you've both got good reasons. So let's just look at
the stats. Caitlin Clark is thirteenth in the WNBA points
per game. Don At Tarassi is on the team, was fifteenth,
Clark is fourth, and assists per game. Sabrina Ironescu is eighth,

(04:29):
Kelsey Plumb was eleventh, and Jewel Lloyd is fourteenth. They're
all on the team. Clark is second and three pointers made,
two ahead of Tarassi. In her first ten games, Caitlin
Clark scored more than one hundred and fifty points and
had more than fifty rebounds and fifty assists, a feat
previously accomplished only by Sabrina Ionescu. That's it pretty good company.

(04:51):
By the way, Clark also became the first rookie and
only the fourth player ever in the league to record
thirty points, five rebound, five assists, three steals with three
blocks in a game Dinah Tarassi, Stewart and Angel mccowtree.
Oh yeah. She's also the fastest player in the history
to one hundred, one hundred points and fifty rebounds. So,

(05:14):
Caitlin Clark, we are learning found out just a couple
hours before her game the other night that she was
not going to be on the Olympic team tod Did
she respond? Did she cry bitch and moan? No, she
hasn't all yeager. She found out she was not going
to be an Olympic team, so she went out and
set a WNBA rookie record, tying seven threes and scored

(05:38):
thirty points in front of the largest WNBA crowd in
seventeen years, three hundred and thirty three in Washington, DC,
more than double the crowd Chicago drew the night before
in the same arena. Chicai was at the jam Manger
Rees Place for just saying, just giving facts, you decide.
She became the first player in WNBA history with two

(06:00):
hundred points and seventy five assists in her first twelve
career games. And then USA Basketball said, you're not on
the team. Okay, As I you said, if it can
happen to Isaiah Thomas, who deserved it, if it can
happen to Charles Barkley, who I absolutely think deserved it.

(06:20):
They say John Stockton deserved it. Bobby Knight cut both
of them, Barkley and Stockton. It can happen. It could
happen to Caitlin Clark. Now, one of the narratives here
is that she was never given a real chance to
try out USA Basketball sort of for whatever reason, scheduled

(06:43):
her tryout during the women's Final Four, when she was
leading Iowa into the national title game for the second
consecutive season. Now, Clark has simply been told no, you're
not on the team. No, we don't want you on
our Olympic team. Well, I'm gonna sit on the sidelines
on this one and let you all knock your heads

(07:04):
together because you've got agendas, know you do, And it's okay,
It's okay, It's okay to have opinions. This is America.
Certain reporters that I respect believe this is some of
the worst bad athletes selection decision in forty years. People
who have covered the Olympics think this is the worst.
But I guess you shouldn't be surprised. The Olympic Games

(07:27):
are run by amateurs and they make amateur decisions. Again,
I'm just reporting to you what I have seen. Look,
these are twelve man rosters. There's only one hundred and
forty four players in a WNBA and there are only
twelve people that can make this team, and they got
a lot of veterans, and they're pretty well stocked to

(07:50):
stacked at the guard position, and they got a lot
of people with their national experience. So I'm really not
that bent out of shape that Caitlin Clark is not
on the team. They're gonna win the damn gold medal anyway, Seriously,
it's gonna be stupid, and I don't want to hear
any lamb excuses. Well, she wouldn't play that much anyway.
There was a groundswell of people who didn't want her there,

(08:11):
same way they didn't want Isaiah Thomas there. And Bobby
Knight had his reasons for cutting Charles Barkley one narrative
that came out this week. Because I'm a big Gino
Orim a fan, I have immense respect for Gina Orim.
I think he's brilliant and obviously his record speaks for itself,
but I didn't like the way he Grants standed the
other day talking about people who are unknowledgeable on the WNBA.

(08:33):
Everybody's unnoledgeable on the WNBA. They've been playing for twenty
six years, never made a damn dime. You know you
don't go to games, you're off. I got a million
listeners in six hundred affiliates and serious XM Channel eighty three.
If you go to a WNBA games, tweet at me.
I want to hear from you. You don't go. I
barely watched, and I'm the biggest sports fan ever. Now

(08:54):
the Las Vegas Ace is here back to back and
my buddy does the play by play. So I watched
when they got to the finals a little bit, and
I think the product's pretty good. It is good, they
played good, they played a good brand a basketball. It
just doesn't thrill me. I can't tell you. Why hold
it against me, Cut me out of your will, do
what you gotta do, call the cops. I don't care.

(09:15):
Some people like olives. I don't need olives. And I'm Italian.
Figure that one out. So look, I wasn't real happy
with what gene Orima said. She's not quick enough. Do
you hear the stats I just gave. Okay, no one's
going to confuse her with Derek Jones Junior, but she's
not quick enough to create her own shot. She has
faced the fiercest defensive pressure statistically in the league all year.

(09:38):
They blitz her, they double team her, they trap her,
they slam her from behind with elbows when there's a
dead ball. Look, I get it, she's not the best
player in the league, but you can make a case
she might be the most important and she's probably the
most popular. And you don't like that, dude, you just
don't like that. In spite of all of it, I'm

(09:58):
okay with the fact after off they make these decisions,
they do what they do. What do I care Caitlin
Clark doesn't get a free trip to Paris. She's got
forty million reasons to take a trip to Paris anytime
she wants. That's also something that pisses other people off.
Too bad, too sad. See, you wouldn't want to be again,
I'm not that upset that she's left off the team.

(10:19):
If it can happen to Charles Barkley, it can happen
to Isaiah Thomas. You can after Kaitlin Clark. One other thing, Gino,
you're telling me you're making a decision after ten twelve
games that she's not athletic enough to play in this league.
Maybe I'm paraphrasing, but you know what you said, did
you say that about Steph Curry his first year in
the league. Golden State almost traded him. They liked Monte

(10:43):
allis better. There are real questions as to whether a
one hundred and seventy pounds diminutive Steph Curry would be
physical enough to play in the league. Gee, what do
you think about ten years later? Do you think people
can have the chance to develop and get better? Steph
Curry became one hundred and ninety pounds. You heard my
opening commentary to weeks ago on a Friday night. There
are scores of Hall of famers who started out rough.

(11:07):
Willie Mays after thirteen games couldn't get a hit. Leo
de Roscher put his arm around him, said, son, you're
my center fielder. Mays was crying in the dugout look
at Ken Griffyd Jr. How you started, Sandy Kofax, I
just mentioned Steph Curry. I'm not going to go over
the list again. I'm also not going to predict Kaitlin
Karkleby in the Hall of Fame. But I am saying this.

(11:29):
You just heard the numbers I gave. Those are objective stats,
Those are objective truths. They're not subjective opinions based on
personal feels. They are facts. Just put that in your
plap and smoke it when you give the narrative. Has
she had her pocket picked a lot? You bet? Yep,
That's what happens when they blitch you. They play fierce defense,

(11:50):
the ultimate soundary respect. Name any player, the eleventh player
on the bench for any of these teams. You can
name all the teams. You think Kennedy Clark's him slam
her from behind? No, I don't think so. Everything that
has happened to Caitlin Clark is the ultimate side of respect.
She's in their head man, And you know what, Let's

(12:11):
just see where this goes. Because Dick Chef taught me
a couple of things. He said, Look, my favorite sport
is people, and who's my favorite team? An't root for
and root for anybody anymore? I root for the story.
This is a story, just like I talked about with
Dion Sanders eight months ago. People rise to a certain
level and there are factions of society that can't wait
to tear them down. Yeah, Abe, Lincoln was a good president,

(12:33):
But how about that ward on his nose? You get
the picture coming up? The Dodgers and Yankees. The Dodgers
made a statement against the Braves about a month ago.
Now they're making a statement against the Yankees. He's a
World Series or bust. Well, there's one guy that's gonna know.
He does a great job and he's got his own
podcast too. Rowin Ryan Berschinger is gonna check in with us.

That's welcome. In a gentleman fixture here at Fox Sports,
Rado has his own podcast, clearly has his finger on
the pulse of the Dodgers, as you'll find out in
just a second. Say hello to our guy, Ryan Berschinger.

Speaker 5 (14:14):
Hi, Ryan, Oh, Bernie, thank you so much for having
me again. You're two kinds.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
Glad to have you, man, because this is becoming a story.
We are closing in on July fourth, which is the
de facto half point in the season, and you cover
a team that spent a billion dollars in the offseason.
They've won back to back one hundred plus seasons, but
they got knocked out in the Division Series both times.
So on a scale of one to ten, how much

(14:40):
pressure is it for the Dodgers World Series or bust?
This season?

Speaker 5 (14:46):
It's crept up a bit at the start of the season.
I felt like, okay, once they got Otani because of
the fact that he wasn't going to pitch this season,
I figured you kind of give them a two year
window of the World Series or BUS so by the
end of next year, one hundred percent would be at
ten if they don't win it this year. This year,
i'd say like an eight, especially during this Yankee series

(15:07):
where it feels like a playoff atmosphere, and you've had
coming into this series the last week plus where the
Dodgers offense kind of disappeared at times, which is unfortunately
what we saw from them in the postseason the last
two years. Seeing that sort of a reminiscence play from
the Dodgers offense really for a lot of Dodger fans,

(15:29):
it hit too close to home, and I think it
caused that World Series or bust mentality to boost a
little bit. So yeah, I would say that this year
it's probably at an eighth. But the reality is is
once the Dodgers get to the postseason, the expectations will
be that they need to at least get to the
World Series out of the NL because it is still

(15:51):
I don't want to say open, there's still very much
plenty of contenders in the NL. The Phillies are excellent.
The Braves, of course, losing Akunya is not great, but
there's still a very strong team. But outside of them,
there's not much in the way of the Dodgers in
the National League. So the expectations are this is the
team that should represent the d NL in the World Series.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
So they're making a statement this weekend against the Yankees.
I'm glad you brought up Acunya because they made a
real statement when they swept the Braves about a month ago,
when they had Acunya. It's funny. I was in Paris,
London ten days ago, sitting next to this dude and
he was flying back to Atlanta and they canceled his
flight and I looked at the dude. I said, first, Ronald, Lacunya.
Now this you picked up some bad juju. Buddy goes, oh, no,

(16:35):
you're killing me, Ronald. They don't think they can beat
the Dodgers without Acunya. Part of the reason I asked
the question is because it feels like it's setting up,
which begs a second question. On a scale of one
to ten, how much pressure is on Dave Roberts because
all the blames of the failures of prior October's seem
to fall on roberts lap, especially when you you know,

(16:56):
people have questioned his late game bullpen decisions, etc. Might
be unfair, but it's out there. How much pressures on
Dave Roberts scale of one to ten.

Speaker 5 (17:06):
I don't know if i'd go full ten, but it's
probably around an eight as well. Quite frankly, given the
expectations and given how good this team is, if they
were to fall short of a World Series win or
at the very least of World Series appearance, somebody somewhere
is going to be held responsible for that. I don't
think it would be Dave, because this front office has

(17:27):
stood by Dave throughout every unfortunate postseason showing. Over the
last couple of weeks, you've heard a lot of people
really grumble about the hitting coach, Robert Vanskoyak, and then
that's fair and he if anybody were to lose their
job over anything less than a World Series this year,

(17:50):
they'd probably start there. Because if the Dodgers' offense dies
in the postseason yet again, somebody's going to be held responsible.
Even if he's not, you know, entirely, I don't want
to say scapegoat. It's just kind of putting a figurehead
onto the blame because, quite frankly, their hitting approach is organizational, right.

(18:11):
This is how the front office and this is how
their entire management staff approaches every game on a day
by day basis. Offensively, their approaches at the plate are
it's all their scouting departments and everybody working together. It's
not really just the hitting coach that kind of guide
approaches at the plate. And quite frankly, when you've got
guys like Chris Taylor, who is having his worst offensive

(18:34):
season ever and it's one of the worst offensive players
in baseball, unfortunately this year, that falls on the players,
but people will find somebody to take the fall for that.
So I have a feeling that if the Dodgers fall
short this year, people still will come after Robert, but
it will be somebody like Van Skoyak who really does

(18:57):
suffer because of it.

Speaker 2 (18:59):
Tyler Ryan Singer, all around guru here at Fox Sports Radio,
also one of the hosts of the sick podcast The
Dodgers Zone. I'm glad you brought up their offense, so
It's kind of the tail of two cities. Your top
half of the lineup with bets O, Tony Freeman and Smith, Uh,
they're they're you know, they're they're just they're swinging it, man,

(19:20):
There's no two ways about it. But the bottom half
is like a drunk cross in an icy street. You
mentioned Chris Taylor, but Gavin Lux, James Ablin, Rique Hernandez,
you know, not good. Could this be a real damocles
the Dodgers of you know, effort to get to the
World Series. Could this really rear it's head the postseason?

Speaker 5 (19:42):
Absolutely? And and this is really going to be their
priority as the trade deadline comes, is they do need
to Ironically, it feels ridiculous to say, right the Dodgers
need more offense, but they do need more offense that
that second half of the line up. There a lot
of those guys, as you mentioned, struggled all at the
same time, James Outman had to go back to Triple

(20:04):
A because he really struggled this season. Unfortunately, Andy pat Has,
who looked great for his first couple of weeks, he
came back down to earth a little bit. As you mentioned,
Kei k Hernandez, who yeah, he homeworks tonight. He hits
well against lefties, but because of Max Monty's injury, he's
playing the infield a little bit more and he can't
hit right.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
He's very well.

Speaker 5 (20:25):
Micguil Rojas has been a bright spot and so that's
been nice to see. But outside of that, especially when
and this is what happened with the Dodgers struggles offensively
over the last couple of weeks, is the top half
of the lineup was kind of slumping, and when those
guys start to slump, the bottom half that has has
really struggled collectively throughout the season, you can't really expect

(20:49):
them to then pick up the slack and a big loss.
And a big reason why the offense has struggled too
is Max Munty being gone. People don't really realize. They
will look at Max Munsey and think, oh, well, he
only gets two hundred, like it's how much can.

Speaker 2 (21:05):
You really do?

Speaker 5 (21:06):
But he gets on base like crazy, he works counts
like crazy, and he hit thirty bombs and one hundred
RBIs the season. But what he does do is he's
one of the most patient hitters in baseball. He works
counts incredibly well. He has a great knowledge of the
strikesone and when the offense was struggling, they didn't have
somebody there in the middle of the lineup who could
still work the pitcher even though he may get out,

(21:29):
but he was working, you know, ten to eleven pitch
at that Those elongated at that pay dividends later in
the game. And so not having Monsey in the middle
of that lineup, you also, because of that, Taylor had
to play more, Lux had to play more, and you've
had to keep Mooki at shortstop, which over the last month,
by the way, Mookie's offensively not been excellent. He's hit

(21:53):
a shade under three hundred until he homer the other day.
He only had two homers in the month of May,
and a lot of pere questioning like, is this because
of the fact that he's transitioning to shortstop. He's played
fine at shortstop, but he's played well for a guy
who doesn't play shortstop. It's clear that it's not really
his natural position. Ideally you put him in the right field,

(22:15):
but even at second base he was doing better. But
because of the month, the injury, and because the Dodgers
seem to be kind of bullheaded about keeping Mookie at
shortstop right now, it doesn't look like that change is
going to happen anytime soon. So hopefully the struggles at
short aren't really what is causing Mookie's offensive struggles and
he can kind of turn it around, and of course

(22:37):
he's Mookie Bets. You figure if anybody's going to get
back on track as him. But yet, overall, again, it
does feel weird to talk about the struggles of the
offense on a night where they just went off for
eleven runs against one of the best teams in baseball.
But this is what we saw over the last couple
of weeks is for the most part, the Dodgers' offense
was kind of disappearing on nights, and then they would
have a night like this one where they'd explode for

(22:59):
double runs.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
You bring up a good point on Max Mounsey. I
se'd to remember him hitting well with runners in scoring position,
and one need not to look back too far. The
Dodgers were nine for fifty one with runners in scoring
position in the past two postseasons. That can't happen again.
Do you expect the Dodgers to perhaps to make a
move here before the trade deadline to try to shore
up the back end of the lineup.

Speaker 5 (23:22):
I would I would. I would imagine they're probably going
to look outfield. Infield would be best. The problem is
that there's not a ton of options in terms of
infield on the trade deadline at the moment. We'll see
what kind of opens up.

Speaker 6 (23:38):
A lot of.

Speaker 5 (23:38):
People speculated prior to the season that Willie Damas would
make a ton of sense for the Dodgers. He's got
one year left in Milwaukee. He's having a great season.
But that was prior to the season when everybody figured
the Brewers weren't going to be good, and they're actually good.
So that's been a problem. It's suddenly now a Domas
isn't available, so outside of him, there's not really many

(23:59):
short stops available on the trade market. It will be
interesting to see what the Cardinals choose to do, because
you kind of figure, if they're not really in contention
this year, it would make sense for them to offload
both Goldsmid and Aeronado in some way. And so if
we're if we're getting you know, real wild here, Nolan
Aeronado at third for the Dodgers would make sense. But

(24:23):
he's not you know, he's not Nolan Aernado as he
was a few years ago, but he definitely would be
an upgrade from what they've got right now to move
months over to second. But it will probably be an
outfielder because that market might be a little more open.
I think a guy like Tyler O'Neill is great. Unfortunately
he has been struggling with injuries that he just got

(24:43):
injured again a couple of days ago. But yet I
would expect them to look for a bat, even though
they've been good against left handed pitching, Probably a right
handed back given the way that they like the platoon guys,
and you look at the outfield right now, and with
with Jason Hey who will still be on the bench,
you figure Gavin Lusse will still be on the bench,
So a right handed that would make sense.

Speaker 2 (25:05):
Ran just got about a minute. But speaking of left
handed pitching, I understand Clayton Kershaw through a one inning
simulated game over the weekend. Plan is to get him
back by around the first week in July. How big
will it be to get Clayton Kershaw back into this rotation?

Speaker 5 (25:24):
You know, this might sound surprising to people, but not
really that big, and that's because of a couple of things. One,
the Dodgers' rotation has been stellar this season. Tyler Glass
now is an ace. Yoshinobu Yamamoto has been fantastic, and
we saw I think that Friday night you can really
call his coming out party to go into New York

(25:45):
in that hostel environment and the deal in the way
that he did. He's phenomenal. He's the real deal. And
then beyond him, Gavin Stone, who we saw tonight, is great.
He's having a great season. They're about to get Bobby
Miller back as well. So you figure, if you're looking
at a playoff rotation right now, you've got last Now
going game one, y'am, the Moto Game two, and then

(26:06):
probably Bobby Miller Game three, and looking at a game four,
you can go with Gavin Stone. If Walker Buehller gets
back on track more, he could start that game. And
and you figure, if you're if you're banking on a
guy to get back on track more between Bueller and Kershaw,
you're gonna lean Bueller there. So really it's not a

(26:27):
huge deal. Once Kershaw does get healthy. I think the
the importance of Clayton Kershaw is really kind of as
a as a figurehead at this point, right, Like, as
Dodger fans, we just want to see Clayton Kershaw pitch
and finish his career with the Dodgers. I think that's
the biggest thing for me personally, is you think about

(26:47):
his last last time we saw him in the majors
was that terrible postseason outing where he was he really
should end up been pitching, but the Dodgers really only
had two starting pitchers going into the postseason, and he
tried to put the team on his back, but he
was at like fifty percent health and was very obvious
and he got sheltered six runs and a third of
an inning. Yeah, really, more than anything, having Kershaw come

(27:10):
back would just mean that we can not have that
be the last time we saw Kwayton Kershaw. More than anything.
If he comes back and he pitches well, and he
pitches well enough to be a piece of the postseason rotation,
that's a gigantic plus. But I wouldn't bank on it
at this point in his career.

Speaker 2 (27:28):
But it will be great to see.

Speaker 5 (27:30):
Him back just in general. But yes, overall, the big
point with Kershaw is that the rotation is so loaded
as it is that if he's in the playoff rotation.
It's because of probably an injury, and that wouldn't be great.

Speaker 2 (27:44):
Ryan, great stuff. That's exactly why we have you on
setting the record straight. I guess I won't bother asking
about Trevor Bauer. Enjoy your evening, my friend. Enjoy the
rest of the weekend. Oh you super and thank you
so much. That is Ryan Berschinger, The Sick Podcast the
Dodgers owned. Obviously, you can see he's got his finger
on the pulse. We're gonna look ahead to Seltz Mavericks,

(28:05):
but I gotta look back. What the hell happened in
Game one. I'll give you my thoughts and breakdown, but
first let's go to our guy, the hardest working man
in rock and roll, Martin Weiss were the latest.

Speaker 7 (28:13):
The Florida Panthers took Game one to the Stanley Cup
Final three to nothing over the Edmonton Oilers. In baseball,
t Oscar Hernandez hit two home runs, including a Grand Slam,
as the Dodgers beat the Yankees for the second straight
night in a row. Aaron Judge had two home runs
in the eleven to three loss.

Speaker 4 (28:28):
The Reds one their.

Speaker 7 (28:28):
Seventh straight game, beating the Cubs four to three, Andrew
Abbott gets his fifth win on the year. Cincinnati improved
to thirty two and thirty three. Second in the NL Central.
Toronto shut out of Oakland seven and nothing Kevin Gossman with
a complete game, complete game win there. Ten strikeouts for Gossman.
Padres beat the Diamondbacks thirteen to one. San Diego as
outscored Arizona twenty three to four in the last two games.

(28:50):
Philly's beat them at seven to two in London. Bryce
Harper had three hits, including his fifteenth homer. Fifty four
thousand people in attendance there. Philadelphia improved to forty five
and nineteen on the year. Guardians went eight to nothing
over the Marlins. Cleveland with the three game lead over
the Royals in the AL Central. The Astros beat the
Angels six to one. Astros five games under five hundred
at thirty and thirty five. Like you just said, Bernie.

(29:12):
Game two of the NBA Finals is Sunday night in Boston.
Celtics lead the Mavericks one to nothing in the series.
College Baseball Super Resonals North Carolina, Florida State, and Virginia
all advance. Evansville beat number one Tennessee to force a
game three. Later today, Scotti Sheffler leaves the memorial by
four strokes and men's soccer. US men's soccer lost five

(29:33):
to one in an exhibition against Columbia.

Speaker 4 (29:35):
Bernie back to you.

Speaker 2 (29:36):
All right, Martin, that's so fun, and I, Buddy, Well,
a little later in the show, I will share with
you which player I think holds the key to game two.
But first we have to look back at game one. Obviously,
the Celtics welcomed Kyrie Irving back to TD Garden. Not
it was very rude welcoming. Dallas gets beat by eighteen.

(29:58):
The game was not really that, say. Boston led by
as many as twenty nine points in the first half,
and Luca got a little hot in the third quarter,
cut the deficit to nine in the third quarter, and
the Celtics collectively said, not up in here, not up
in here. Give it up to Jalen Brown. He played.
He was a man possessed on both ends of the floor.

(30:19):
You can tell he really wants this. Twenty two points,
seven to twelve, three blocks, three steals. Chris STAPs Porsingis
comes back from what a sixty day hiatus and a
calf injury. He hadn't played, well, maybe not that long.
He hadn't played since the first round of the playoffs.
Hes course, twenty points had the post drives block. His
presence was felt on both ends of the floor. Now, look,

(30:43):
let's break this game down from a logical standpoint. Now,
I'm you know, I'm no high school dropout. I went
to full six years. But here's the math issue that
Dallas had. We all know that Boston is the most
prolific three point shooting team in the league. They attempted
fifteen more threes than Dallas did. Boston attempted forty two threes.

(31:05):
Dallas only attempted twenty seven. But Boston made nine more
three pointers than Dallas did, sixteen to seven. That's a terrible, terrible,
terrible formula for the Dallas Mavericks and Luka Doncic justifiably
gave to Celtics a lot of credit. He said, listen,

(31:25):
they're spacing is very good. They got a lot of shooters,
so you know, we've got to do a little bit
better job of taking those threes away. Well, don't tell me,
show me that's easier said than done. The Celtics shoot
more threes than anybody, and Dallas's defense has been excellent
the past few months. But they've made their bones protecting
the paint, not necessarily taking away threes. This could be

(31:48):
they're real. This could be the bugaboo as this series
goes on. Now, the MAVs could perhaps go with a
smaller lineup in Game two. They did this at times
in the opener. But you know, the truth of the
matter is Daniel Gafford and Derek LaVey, who's been outstanding
in the playoffs. He only played eighteen minutes because they
both got into foul trouble. They're the ones that have

(32:09):
given Dallas their defensive identity. So I don't know what
Dallas does to slow Boston down. Maybe you can test
everything right, you close out on the shooter. But if
the Celtics make their threes and Dallas doesn't, this may
not This may not be a good situation for the
good folks in Dallas. Another massive discrepancy, the assist discrepancy.

(32:34):
This isn't normal. The Mavericks finished the game with nine
assists the whole team, and a couple of them, by
the way, came in garbage time. Dallas had more turnovers
eleven than assists nine. Boston had as many blocks as
Dallas did assists. So even when the MAVs appeared to

(32:55):
have a little bit of momentum in the third quarter,
they weren't any kind of offensive rhythm. Go back and
look at the game. They didn't have a single assist
in the third quarter, even though they were closing in
on the lead. Jason Kidd after the game was pretty obvious.
He said, look, we got to move the ball more.
The ball got stuck too much. But the Celtics they
did the exact opposite Jason Tatum, Derk White, Drew Holiday.

(33:17):
They moved the ball with purpose. Boston had twenty three assists,
about its average for the season, and they offensively did
exactly what they needed to do, and the game was
never really in question. So the bottom line is this,
you get to tee it up again on Sunday night,
and a little later in the show, I'm going to

(33:38):
talk about which player I think is going to be
the most pivotal, and this particular player actually disappeared a
little bit in the OKC series, but Dallas was able
to still win. But Boston clearly is not. Okay. See
now this series is not over, not by a long shot.
But you really don't want to go down to if
you're the MAVs. Boston is famous for stinking it up

(34:01):
in game two's Dallas is famous for stinking it up
in game ones. I believe they lost both the Clippers,
and they had another opponent in the first in the
earlier in the playoffs where they were down by like
twenty five in those games, still came back obviously won
those series might have been okay, See it doesn't matter.
It's all in the past. Anyway. Coming up, I want
to also share with you why this series is personal.

(34:23):
There's a bit of a history between the Celts and MAVs.
It's actually a little more personal than you realize, and
you may have forgotten. I will rekindle your memory. I'm

All right, back of the Bernie Fraudle Show, Fox Sports Radio.

(34:47):
B Are Comedy live from the TARAC dot Com studios
here in Las Vegas. Coming up top of the hour,
about eleven minutes from now, Medina Magic Mark Medina or
Fox Sports Radio and be a Guru will join us
as he always does midnight on the Bernie Frattle Show,
and we've got a lot to talk about. Obviously, the

(35:08):
finals pick up again in Game two Sunday night, and
we'll get into the we'll get into the Danny Hurley thing.
But I'm not going to really speculate too much on
whether or not Mark thinks he's going to take the
job or what. We don't know. Okay, I do know this.
I have my reasons why I don't think he will,
and I talked to somebody today who's pretty close to

(35:29):
the situation. No one really knows. But he'll be heavily
influenced by his father, I believe, and I think he'll
be heavily influenced by his wife, who's a Jersey City girl.
Not that he doesn't want to be the NBA someday,
but there are horses for courses and at this time
in history. And I'll give you a little bit more
detail later on the show as to what I think
the thoughts are. You know, he's an exquisite teacher. Will

(35:53):
he do what he do well? Yeah, I think he would.
I mean, the man was born to coach. He's a
chip off the jo block. His father the Bob, who
is a legendary coach Saint Anthony's High School. If you
ever heard this guy talk about basketball, it's like listening
to God talk about basketball. But we'll get to that.
I will say this also, I want to get I

(36:14):
want to talk to Mark about the disappearance of JJ Reddick.
Now I'm not sourced as well as Mark on these things,
but I can call people too. And I had heard
something along the lines of there was real questions about
JJ Reddick getting the staff he wanted. I think he
reached out to Sam Cassell. Did I confirm that twice? No,

(36:36):
but I heard it. Sam Cassell is like, no, I
don't think so. I don't want to ride shotgun with you.
I don't blame Sam Cassell. He once a head coaching job.
Same with James Barrego. All of a sudden, now it's
one thing to have a concept and an idea and
oh it looks good. He slicks his hair back like
that rally used to Hey, here we go. Yeah, seven
coaches and four lem you get the picture. You got
to be careful this could go really wrong, really fast.

(37:02):
And I think although JJ Redick is a basketball savant,
he had a pretty good care in the NBA, it
doesn't mean he's gonna take over this most prestigious, probably
the most glory franchise in all the NBA. I believe that,
and I know I was an intern there back in
the day. So the long and short of it is,
I'm more curious is what the hell happened to JJ

(37:23):
Reddick versus you know what Danny Hurley's gonna do. But
we got the finals too. Let's not let it overshadow
the finals. By the way, this is the point in
the playoffs where you look at teams and you look
at the MAVs, you look at the Celtics, and you
reflect on their journey. So no matter who wins these
NBA finals, both these franchises, they earn their way there.

(37:46):
There are a hundred games in and the truth of
the matter is there are gonna be big storylines no
matter who wins it. All right, there are a couple
of key players that I'm focused on. Now here's why
I said it was personal. Six years ago. Remember, Kyrier
Irving was supposed to be the future of the Boston Celtics,
and then, of course he left on bad terms. But

(38:08):
six years ago, in twenty eighteen, before Kyrie Irving was loathed,
he was injured a lot, but he wasn't loathed yet.
Two of his young teammates, these two guys you may
have heard of him, Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown, they
let Boston on a shocking run to Game seven of
the Eastern Conference Finals. They almost beat Lebron James when
he was in his prime. Still that since then, Boston

(38:32):
has not done a hell of a lot. They had
a twenty twenty two run to the NBA Finals and
multiple Conference finals appearances. But when they see Kylie Irving
take the floor in Boston, people are triggered. And for
good reason. It didn't go well there. It did in
well there. He was booed every time he touched the ball.
Here's a chance for Kyrie to change that narrative. Let's

(38:53):
also not forget it's personal because five years ago christapspor
Singers was supposed to be for Dallas what Luke Donchik
and Kyrie Irving are doing now a potential running mate. Instead,
their styles clashed on the court. Of course, sing has
became a bit of a liability in the offensive and
defensive ends. He left Dallas in twenty twenty two, and

(39:13):
since then Dallas has seemingly rebounded with Kyrie Irving. So
either Kyrie Irving is going to get another ring and
Lucas gonna get his first ring, or Jalen Brown and
Jason Tatum are going to get the monkey off their back,
and make no mistake, they do have a monkey on
their back. They gotta win. But boy, I'll tell you,
I really impressed with the way Jalen Brown stepped up
the other night. So this series is personal. There are

(39:35):
storylines among the teams. There are storylines among players Chris
DApps formerly a Mav and Kyrie formerly a Celtic. I'm
watching that ever so closely. Coming up, But we bring

We've got big news involving coaches who seem to have

the scene, and of course all kinds of stuff involving
the NBA. That's why every Saturday night on the Bernie

our Fox Sports Radio NBA guru joins us every week
at this time, Mark as usual, not a slow news week.
When we sign off every week, I say, I can't
wait to see what the new cycle brings next week,

(41:15):
and here we go. I want to come in from
left field here though. I want to talk about JJ Reddick.
Well happened, Lucy? I mean, it seemed like it was trending,
but I don't mean to lead the witness, but I
want you to tell me if there's any merit to
what I think I heard from a source I trust.
He reached out to Sam Cassel as an assistant. Sam

(41:37):
Cassel said, nope, and same with James Brego. I don't
blame E the one of those guys. They went head
coaching jobs. So all of a sudden it started to
look like it might have sounded good conceptually, but when
the rubber hit the road, this might not work. Your thoughts,
does any of that make sense? Is there any merit
to that?

Speaker 6 (41:52):
Yeah, some of it can make sense, But I think
that the reality is you might not believe me, but
I think how the Lakers channeled the coaching starts at
the beginning is fairly the same as how it's played out.
And here's what I mean by this. Outside you know,
and I'm not talking media people, I'm talking you know
people around the league. There was a thought that JJ
Reick's the guy the Lakers are just buying their time

(42:15):
into the NBA Finals ends and then they'll they'll hire them.
But the Lakers from the very jump were always adamant
that they interviewed JJ Reddick but they're going to interview
other candidates. They're going to take their time, They're going
to talk to each candidate about how they would be
as a head coach, how would they be, you know,
as part of a coaching staff. And so as this

(42:35):
pertains to Dan Hurley, it's my understanding that, yes, obviously
this week changed a lot of things as far as
their confidence level that Dan Hurley could accept an offer,
and that's not guaranteed, but at least there's a confidence level.
But they expressed an interest and had early communications well

(42:57):
before this. The Lakers just you know, made sure wasn't
getting out there because they didn't feel any certain way
on whether it would actually happen. Now, this doesn't mean
it's actually going to happen because they generally has a
good thing going on at Yukon and he's won championships
there and you know, even though in the nil era,

(43:19):
there's probably more stability at Yukon than there is with
the Lakers. But I think as it pertains this week,
it got out because there's a little bit more confidence
that they're deeper in the process with us. But who knows.
I mean, this has been such a wild roller because
really anything can happen.

Speaker 2 (43:36):
Well, you spot on that the Lakers interviewed several candidates,
including James Brago and Shamkusale and I think even David Adelman,
who's an assistant with Denver, including JJ Redick, and it
was after they interviewed all those guys that it was
still being reported that JJ Reddick was the one that
they were enamored with. So it was after those other

(43:56):
guys were interviewed that that narrative continued. Is there any
bigger event that you have observed that may have changed
the narrative and causes the whole process to pivot.

Speaker 6 (44:08):
Yeah, it's a really good question, and I'm always humbable
by what I don't know. But here's what I do know,
at least from what I've been told, is that there
was never any feeling that the Lakers all of a sudden,
we're having second thoughts about JJ Redick for suddenly soured
or anything like that. Their impression of him was the
same as it was when this process started. You know,

(44:30):
obviously you get to know them, et cetera, and that helps,
but there wasn't any you know, epiphany where all of
a sudden they're getting concerns about JJ Redick. So there
was just more especially around the NBA draft, combine a
lot of feeling from other people around the league just
talking that they had a conclusion and the impression that

(44:54):
JJ Redick's their guy and it's to lose. But all
I can say is from at least my laned, the
Lakers messaging hasn't really changed that much.

Speaker 2 (45:04):
There was.

Speaker 6 (45:05):
Yeah, JJ Reddick's interesting, but we're talking to a lot
of different people and we'll see what happens.

Speaker 2 (45:12):
Talking with Mark Medina Medina Magic every Saturday night. Here
to Bernie Fradshaw, a Fox Sports Radio NBA guru. All Right,
I don't want to really speculate a lot on Danny Hurley.
I've got my thoughts. I made a couple of calls today.
When do you think the decision will be made either
way with respect to whether he accepts the position or

(45:33):
he decides to stay at Yutah.

Speaker 6 (45:36):
I would expect we have clarity sometime this week. You know,
I don't think whether he stays or not, that this
is a decision that's going to be dragged out, no doubt,
A very good problem for him to have as far
as how he weighs it. But I think that you
know now this week is going to be the moment
of clarity and then don't see what happens. What's your

(45:59):
prediction were on the topic.

Speaker 2 (46:01):
So I spent significant time on this Friday night, and
I will later in the show, and I'm putting it
out on the record, and I will take my medicine
if I'm wrong. I say it's ten percent that he
accepts the position. Wow, let me repeat. I say it's
ten percent he accepts the job. It's not zero, but
it ain't fifty to fifty. I don't want I'm gonna

(46:24):
if you're up late, I will revisit. I will paraphrase
what I spent time, significant time talking about last night.
And I made a few calls today. And if you
understand his wife and Andrea, and where she's from and
where her roots are, and his father, there's a lot
that's going to go into this decision. Not to say
that Danny Hurley might not dip his toe in the
water in the NBA someday there are horses for courses,

(46:47):
and I'm not so sure this is the right one
for Danny Hurley, but that's for him to decide. And
I've asked. I asked my Friday Night producer, Ian Roddy
to save the sound bite because I'll play it next
Friday if he accepts a job. When we wake up
tomorrow morning, I'll play it. I'll take my medicine and
I'll give the reasons I said. But I'm sticking that's
my story, Mark, and I'm sticking to it.

Speaker 6 (47:05):
Yeah. I mean, look, I trust your instincts. You make
phone calls. I make phone calls. It's just it's just
fascinating because I think what the interesting wrinkle with the
Lakers is that on one hand, you say, okay, this
is the dream jobs of dream jobs, this is the Lakers,
the glamour franchise, or coaching Lebron James. But you know,

(47:28):
once you start reading the five print, there's a lot
of things that make this risky. I mean, we're talking
about Lebron James that is only going to play a
few more seasons. And even though he's delaying, Father Time's
Father Time's going to start throwing some punches soon. Anthony Davis,
he could be the next face to franchise. But even

(47:48):
though he's in healthier last season, who knows how long
it'll sustain. And then the rest of the roster is
very unproven and unpredictable. And then you look at the
front off. They've had some success with good rosters, some
failure with rosters, but the bottom line is they don't

(48:09):
have a lot of patience for head coaches. And so.

Speaker 2 (48:15):
Yeah, no, Mark, you really covered a lot of good
ground there. So let's give let's just ever so quickly
contextualize this. I worked for that organization. I was an
intern of that organization. I think the World of Lakers,
I think they are the NBA's premier organization. End of story.
Let's say, you know, the world is a vexing enough

(48:35):
place without hypotheticals, but let's use one anyway. Let's say
this was two thousand and nine or twenty ten, Doctor
Buss was still alive and Danny Hurley was coming off
back to back championships at Yukon, and Doctor Buss was
looking for the next shiny toy. Yeah, that's a dream job.
Then before lebron gets there, before all this, Bronnie James
Michigans look, Chuck Daily once told me coaching in the

(48:58):
NBA is like it's it's merely managing an adult daycare center.
This kid is an exquisite teacher. You're teach in college.
You don't teach a lot in the NBA. This is not.
There are horses for courses. This is not. I don't
like any of this, but let's set that aside. And
I really look forward to having you on next Saturday,
because I think we're gonna have an answer by next Saturday,

(49:18):
and I will stand up and face the music. From
right or wrong, we'll see. But Mark, he wrote some
really good stuff this week on Sports Keda. You talk
to some coaches who look so far, they're looking very
prescient that even with or without Christaps for seeing us,
they really liked Boston to win this series. Your thoughts

(49:40):
take us inside the four walls and some of the
insights these coaches gave you, and the reasons for picking
the Celtics.

Speaker 6 (49:46):
Well, there are a lot of them. I think the
main thing is that they feel that even if they
haven't been playing their best basketball in the playoffs, they
are the best team on paper. They have a really
deep starting lineup, they have really good chemistry, they have,
you know, the most continuity based off of the fact
that they've been to so many Eastern Conference finals with

(50:07):
Jason Tatum Jaylen Brown. The other factor was, yeah, they
were awaiting Christoph Porzingis's return. But I think the key
thing is that two out of the three coaches that
talked to assistant coaches, all from different teams outside of
Dallas and Boston, that they felt like the Celics were
going to win with or without Portzingis, but with Porzingis

(50:30):
back they thought that just another added wrinkle because he's
a great four spacer, great passer. I think the third
thing is all of them downplay the idea that Boston
vulnerable because they didn't have a more difficult path in
the East playoffs than Dallas did in the West. They said, well,
you played the teams that are in front of you,

(50:51):
number one, number two, as much as people might want
to say, oh, well, they played teams with the key injuries.
Well so the Celtics they you know, had to miss
ten games without Porzingis that they still won most of them.
So I think for them they just felt like, hey,
there's so much continuity, and well, they're very high on

(51:11):
Dallas and the duo that Luca Dodgicch and Kyrie Ring
had shown and the chemistry as well with the supporting
cast with Derek Lively the second and Daniel Grafford and PJ. Washington.
They just felt like Boston has more time together and
they just have even more depth. So they're predicting Boston
to win in seven games. I think the other interesting

(51:34):
thing is I also talked to some outside medical doctors
about Porzingis, and all of them predicted something drastically different
than what actually happened in Game one. They predicted that
it's going to take time. He would be on a
minute restriction, which he did, but they thought he would

(51:54):
be rusty. I would take some time for him to
get his conditioning up to stuff, and that he went
don't really shoot the ball well, he would just be
good as a four spacer and passer. But Porzingis played
as if he had not missed a game at all
this postseason, which was wild.

Speaker 2 (52:10):
So Mark, I've been doing this a long time. I
covered the U four series in Detroit. It was a
ninety seven to one when the Pistons shockingly beat the
Lakers in five. I'm gonna draw a bit of a
parallel because I thought things I never thought i'd see.
I'd like you to respond to these. This is part
of my favorite things we do. This was my observations.
I had no idea Boston had the ability to guard

(52:32):
Dallas this aggressively. Kyrie zero for five from behind the yarch.
He saw, Yeah, Luca had thirty but just one assist.
What do I attribute that to? Boston has tremendous defensive versatility.
They can throw multiple defenders at Dallas without doubling anybody.
How does Dallas defeat that?

Speaker 6 (52:50):
Well, Look, I think that clearly Boston's in the driver's seat,
but I think that it's inevitable that Luca and Kyrie
are going to shoot better game too. And I think
that even though it's the NBA Finals, I'm not going
to say Boston's going to let it scar down as
it did in certain times or in earlier playoff rounds.

(53:10):
But it's not going to be the same intensity as
it was in Game one. But I think to your
broader point, you know, Boston just has so many different
defensive weapons. It started to holiday with how great of
a two way player he is. But you know, as
one assistant coach mentioned to me, is that Dallas isn't
going to try to allow Drew Holliday to Mark Luca

(53:33):
or Kyrie. They're going to hunt matchups so that Drew's
off of them. But the reality is they have a
lot of great versatility with Porzingis and Al Wharfer being
those stretch fives and really giving them the ability to
play small ball. I would also say that Jason Tatum
and Jalen Brown, while yeah, they're mostly known for their scoring,

(53:55):
they're great defenders as well. So I think that the
Celtics they have a really good combination of wing and
defense defenders, and they also have versatile bigs. And that's
not the same kind of defensive presence that the MAVs
have because they have more traditional rim protecting centers and
Derek Wiley the second and Daniel Gafford. But Boston's versatility

(54:20):
really allows them to be a presence both in the
back hoard on front court.

Speaker 2 (54:25):
I like the word you use, combination combinations. Boston has
multiple pick and rule combinations that allows their defenders to
stay home. They don't have to help in the paint,
and they don't give up a lot of open looks.
So it's gonna be fun to watch. It's a chess match.
His second observation, obviously, Jason Tatum didn't play well Game one,

(54:47):
six for sixteen from the you know, he turned the
ball over six times. It didn't matter. He may not
even have to play well for them to win because
they have so many other offensive options. But what if
Tatum turns it on? What happens then in the Dallas?

Speaker 6 (55:02):
Yeah, it's it's really tough because I think ideally the
Celtics are at their best when they're moving the ball,
They're able to get open threes. They can take advantage
if Jason Tatum r Jaylen Brown are getting a lot
of defensive attention because Shrew Holliday and Derek White in
particular can hit out side shots. Same thing with porzingis,
same thing without Horford. But I think that to Jason

(55:25):
Tatum's credit, he can be effective when he's in isolation.
It's about hunting the right matchups and so there's nothing
wrong with him going in isolation if he finds the
right matchup. And Jason Tatum, ever since the twenty twenty
two NBA Finals, he's done a really good job at improving,
you know, his finishing at the basket, gain his mid

(55:47):
range game back after you know, maybe focusing more on
getting threes and if you look at his numbers, he's
been even more efficient as a passer this season. And
so yeah, if Jason Tatum lights it up, I guess
ideally that's better than having a balanced offense. But to
Jason Tatum's credit, he's been able to do it more

(56:10):
on his terms than the defensive terms.

Speaker 2 (56:13):
I still think this series is going six, maybe even seven.
But there's one other thing that I think is problematic
for Dallas. They shot fifteen less threes in Boston in
Game one. Boston is a prolific three point shooting team.
In the playoffs this year, when they merely attempt more
threes than their opponent, they're eleven to one. How does
Dallas solve that?

Speaker 6 (56:33):
Well, again, Luca and Kyrie have to make shots. But
I think that, you know, PJ. Washington has to be
what he's been for most of these playoffs, so that
guy that can be the additional scorer. He's really good
with catch and shoot. He's really good at kind of
moving off the ball to allow Luca and Kyrie to

(56:54):
have a little bit more freedom. But it goes back
to our original point here that Boston has so many
defenders that they can cover a lot of grounds, and
so I think that Dallace will still make this a series.
And you know, all it takes is Luke or Kyrie
to have a breakout game where it changes the complexion entirely.
But if I had a predict, I think that Boston

(57:17):
does away with this in six or seven games. So
it's going to be competitive, but I think ultimately their
depth will prevail.

Speaker 2 (57:24):
Hey, Mark, great stuff is always as we say every
Saturday night. I can't wait to see what the new
cycle brings this week. I'm already looking forward to having
you on next Saturday at My Night. Thanks Mark, thanks
so much, as always been Mark Medina Medina Magic every
Saturday night here on the Bernie Frattle Show. He is
a Fox Sports Radio nbagou and we do this fifty

(57:47):
two weeks. Man, after the playoffs are over, We got
the Draft, we had all kinds of stuff. It just
never ends with the Olympics. Okay, you get the picture
coming up by the way bottom of the hour, I
am going to share with you the player I believe
that is going to hold the fate of this, you know,
NBA Finals, but very interesting situation the Yankees. I'm gonna

(58:12):
get to that atbaumb me our very unusual merchandise offering
in Yankee Stadium this weekend as a Dodgers visited town.
I will share with you what that is. You might
get a kick out of it. I'm Bernie Fraddle or company.
Line from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio tirect dot
com studios. Keep it locked right here. You're listening to
the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right

(58:34):
back on the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Comedy
line from the Tarreck dot Com studios here in Las Vegas.
Coming at bottom the hour after Martin's update, I'm going
to dive back into the NBA Finals and I have
got my sites squarely set on one specific player because
he is truly key and you'll see why coming up.

(58:57):
You know, many many, many, many many years ago, there
was a crazy linebacker out of Oklahoma named Brian Bosworth,
the Boss. He ended up having a cup of coffee
in the NFL. His NFL career was really kind of
a big disappointment. He played in Seattle and probably his
highlight film as he got housed by Bo Jackson. Once
I mean you get the license number that truck, I

(59:17):
mean he knocked a mass over tea kettle and she
just was never really an NFL guy. But he was
a great college player. Well, he was pretty much hated
in every city he went to, especially Denver. Denver and
Seattle had a real rivalry. So when Denver played Seattle
and Seattle came to town, all of a sudden there
was these I Hate Brian Bosworth t shirts selling in

(59:38):
the parking lots, selling everywhere. He sold about ten thousand
that day. Turns out it was Brian Bosworth who made
him pretty clever, right. But the Yankees are offering a similar,
very unusual merchandise offering. That's the Department of Redomancy department
at their team store during the Dodgers series. Yes, they're
welcoming the Dodgers this weekend. The Dodgers been very rude guests.

(01:00:02):
They've beat the Yankees twice and it's a major weekend
series and hopefully I think it would be cool if
it was an actual preview of the World Series. We'll see.
But what's interesting is if you are or at the
games and you happen to stop in one of the
team's stores around the stadium. Fans are sharing images of

(01:00:22):
a certain jersey that's being sold at Yankee Stadium while
the Dodgers in town. You may heard of this guy.
His name is Shohio Tani. Interesting. Not only that, but
the team is even selling caps that bear the numbers
of both Otani and the Yankee Star Aaron Judge. Now,
it is worth noting fair to note the Yankees have

(01:00:43):
actually sold Shohio Tani jerseys before when the Angels used
to come to town on the years past. And you know,
you could argue, well, wait a minute, this might make
some sense. There's no question that plenty of Dodgers fans
presumably made the trip and they're in attendance. And by
the way, there are probably some people who maybe just
came to the game to see Shohyo Tani. We'll see.

(01:01:06):
So whether it's casual fans, whether it's sirius fans, I
don't know who the market is for this, because you
can buy Hoyo tany jersey's about anywhere. But I bet
if you are at the Yankees game this weekend against
the Dodgers, the truth of the matter is you might
have been surprised seeing that jersey in the in the

(01:01:27):
team store. Maybe they're trying to raise money so that
they can sign Juan Soda next year. Okay, that was
a joke. Not very funny coming up. What's not a
joke is this particular players performance not only against Oklahoma
City but also against Game one versus Boston. Let's go
back to the NBA Finals coming up. But first our

(01:01:47):
guy Martin Weiss with the latest.

Speaker 7 (01:01:51):
The Florida Panthers took Game one of the Stanley Cup
Final three to nothing. Over ed Muonton Bernie, you were
just talking about this in baseball to Oscar Hernandez hit
two home runs, including a grand Slam. Dodgers beat the
Yankees for the second straight night in a row. Aaron
Judge had two solo home runs himself, but score was
eleven to three.

Speaker 4 (01:02:08):
Dodgers.

Speaker 7 (01:02:09):
Red's won their seventh straight game, beating the Cubs forty three.
Andrew Abbott earns his fifth win on the year. Cincinnati
improved to thirty two and thirty three. Second in the
ANL Central Toronto shut down Oakland seven and nothing. Kevin
Gossman with a complete game win, ten strikeouts for him.

Speaker 4 (01:02:24):
Padres beat the Diamondbacks thirteen.

Speaker 7 (01:02:26):
To one, and they have not been nice to arizonas
San Diego's outscored him twenty three to four over the weekend.
Phillys beat them at seven and two in London. Bryce
Harper with three hits, including his fifteenth home run. Fifty
four thousand people watched the game in London. Philadelphia with
a forty five and nineteen record. Guardians won eight to
nothing over the Marlins. Cleveland with a three game lead

(01:02:47):
over the Royals in the Al Central Astros beat Angels
six to one. Astros five games under five hundred thirty
and thirty five. Game two of the NBA Finals is
Sunday night in Boston.

Speaker 4 (01:02:58):
Celtics lead the Mavericks one to nothing in the series.

Speaker 7 (01:03:01):
College Baseball Super Regionals North Carolina, Florida State, and in
Virginia all advanced Yesterday. Evansville beat number one Tennessee to
force a game three later today, Scottie Scheffler leads the
Memorial by four strokes, and US men's soccer lost five
to one and an exhibition against Columbia.

Speaker 4 (01:03:17):
Bernie back to you.

Speaker 2 (01:03:18):
Good, thanks, Martin. So for me, all eyes will be
on Kyrie Irving Sunday night. Clearly this Dallas experiment has
been success. He's played well and he and Luca have
been so prolific at times. At stan Van Gundy had
the audacity, and I like stan Van Gundy a lot.

(01:03:40):
It's a true gentlemen had the audacity to think they
were the best combo of all time. I don't know, man,
I don't know. Maybe win a championship or four before
you start comparing him to some of the other great combos.
But the point of this matter is Kyrie is a
major part of that combo. And it wasn't that long ago.

(01:04:02):
Remember the second round series versus the OKSE Thunder. Dallas
still won in six games, but Kyrie averaged just fifteen
points and he was held to single digits twice. In
that second round series versus the Thunder, Kyrie scored twelve
points in game one, and they were really, you know,

(01:04:24):
not impactful points. Here's the kicker. Dallas may have beaten Oksee,
but the Celtics are not oka See. They are too
powerful offensively. And now that you've got Kristaps porsingis back
in the mix. For Dallas to have a chance to
win this series, Kyrie's got to put up a lot

(01:04:45):
more than twelve points. It's really that simple. It doesn't mean,
Irving has to go out and score fifty in Game two,
and whatever he scores, it's not going to be simple
because he's human, and the idea that he can just
simply show up, flip a switch and take over the
game just because we said he has to. Look, you

(01:05:07):
heard Mark Medeena and I talking Boston's defensive versatility in
the way they can throw players at you in their
pick and roll combinations. They don't have to double team anybody.
They are really good defensively. Now. The thunder guard at
Irving with Jalen Williams, and he also was part of
a group that sort of switched on Irving a lot

(01:05:30):
in the perimeter, and they are all pretty good perimeter defenders. Now,
the Celtics, they put Drew Holiday on Kyrie Irving, and
I think most people would agree Drew Holliday is probably
the best on ball defender in the NBA. And whether
it's Jaden Suggs or Jade McDaniels or Herb Jones or

(01:05:50):
McHale Bridges or anybody, I think Drew Holliday probably gets
that vote. Okay, Boston has got a star studded roster
of guys who can switch up on Kyrie Irving anytime
during the game, and in Game one, Kyrie did find
himself guarded one on one by Al Horford, who thwarted

(01:06:14):
one of his shots, Sam Hauser, who bothered one of
his shots. Derek White got in his face, and Kyrie
dribbled off his foot. He even passed the ball straight
out of bounds. He missed wide open threes too. He
was zero for five and he missed a bunch of
pull up jumpers, which are typically usually fairly automatic for Kyrie. Now,

(01:06:36):
one of the main issues, if not the main issue,
is that Boston they made this decision to cover Luka
Doncic with a single defender. Luca had been eating up
double teams throughout the playoffs, and he's a very good passer.
But Boston says, no, we're not going to do that.
We've got faith in our ability to guard Luca with

(01:06:57):
a single defender. Luca had thirty didn't matter. Boston still
won by double digits. Luca was guarded with a single
defender only had one assist. What that did was allowed
the Celtics and their peripheral defenders to stay home and
guard guys like Kyrie Irving, who typically has lots of
opportunities to create when there are defenses that are rotating

(01:07:21):
and switching and shifting when they're selling out to double
team Luka doncic Oh. By the way, Luca was not
great himself. Yes, he finished with thirty points on twenty
six shots, but Boston has his point of attack defense,
which really bothered Luca. As I mentioned, he had a
Jalen Brown I think picked his pocket at least a

(01:07:41):
couple times at mid court at mid court, and it
took the ball the other way to get points. So
it will be and Mark Medina brought up a great point,
don't be surprised if Luca and Kyrie come out hot
in Game two. But they're gonna have to. They're gonna
have to because you're with out fat. Boston doesn't have
to make any adjustments. They'll just keep going what's working.

(01:08:04):
And the truth of the matter is if Luca really
gets hot, then it'll be curious to see it's a
chess match. Will Dallas or check that, Will Boston send
their second defender, and then things could loosen up for
Kyrie Irving, but he's still gonna have to to make
his shots. But that also is gonna make Irving like

(01:08:25):
everybody else not named Luca on the Mavericks to rely
on what would then be an unsettled defense for Boston
so they can start to score. Now. Look, Drew Holliday
joked around, you know you ever noticed the great ones
are already always humble. It's like, you know, you golf
of the guy? What's your handicap? I'm not that good,
he goes out to huge seventy two. Sure, Drew Holiday

(01:08:48):
was asked before the playoffs, what's your game plan to
cover Kyrie Irving? He says, well, I'm gonna pray a lot. Well,
he must have had his prayers answered because Drew Holiday
was out. Okay, look, Boston has so much talent. I
mentioned this to Mark. Jason Tatum only had sixteen points
on sixteen shots. I don't know that Dallas will have

(01:09:11):
the luxury of having Jason Tatum have another bad game
like that. But they've already proven they can win by
double digits even if he does. I will say this,
I'll make a bold statement. If Luca and Kyrie don't
combine for sixty on Sunday night, think about that. Okay,
am I talking on my huha baby? But look, I'm

(01:09:32):
paid to have opinions. This is my opinion. If Luca
and Kyrie don't combine for sixty Sunday night and Boston
stays true to its strategy, I think they go to
Dallas goes down oh two. But that's Luca and Kyrie
could come out and have seventy. But the Celtics flat

(01:09:56):
out dared those two guys to beat them in game one.
They gave him single cover all night long and Dallas
could not take advantage of it. And again, the biggest,
the biggest stat in this game that blows me away
is that Luca had one assist. So it's got to
be a different story in game two, and it starts

(01:10:17):
with Kyrie Irving. He's one of two Dallas players who
can basically create offense under any circumstance. He's always proven
he can. He's brilliant, he can create his own shot
off the drill. You can just do about anything. And
it's not just about jacking up threes and beating your
guy off the dribble and jacking up threes. Kyrie's got
to beat the guy in front of him consistency. He's
also got to get to the paint. He's got to

(01:10:38):
get to the hole. He's got to draw contact, he's
got to get to the line. And believe me, even
if Irving and Dancic, you know, combined for sixty, I
think you can pencil in Luca for thirty. I think
he's gonna go go nuts. And I think, you know,
Kyrie's certainly capable, but he's the wild card. I'm not
predicting this, but if he lays another egg in game two,

(01:11:00):
I really believe the mass are going down oh two,
and I would not like to see that. Frankly, I
would like to see a competitive series. We've only played
two NBA games in what last two weeks, and I
got my spot marked out, you know on the barka
Lounger sunding that I want to see a good competitive game,
and we are seeing genuine star power. And these both

(01:11:22):
teams had the journey, and I mentioned earlier the backstories.
Porsingis the former Maverick, Kyrie, the former Celtic. This is
good stuff, man, this is good stuff. We just need
to see the stars show up, most notably Kyrie. Irving.
He's done it before, He's got a two. Look again,
by the way, I want to remind everybody shortly after
the show, the podcast will be going up. Brie will

(01:11:45):
be taking care of that. If you missed any of
tonight's show, be sure to check out the podcast. Just
search Fox Sports Radio wherever you get your podcasts. Also,
be sure to follow, rate and review the podcast. Again,
just search Fox Sports Radio wherever you get your podcasts.
You'll see the show posted right after we get off
the air. The multi talented Breed will be handling that

(01:12:08):
for us. Coming up. I told you last Friday night
that by Friday, June seventh, the Jake Paul Mike Tyson
boxing match will be rescheduled. Well it has been. I
will tell you when it's rescheduled four and why they
had to reschedule it in the first place. Hi, Bernie
Fridderwork Comedy Live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio
tyrack dot com studios. Keep it locked right here. You're

(01:12:30):
listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
All right back on the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Come to you live from me tyrack dot com studios
here in Las Vegas. We're gonna take you up to
three am Pacific six am Eastern about an hour and
twelve minutes from now, the dance sensation sweep in the nation.
What kind of brand new fool of you? Followed by

(01:12:53):
what my name? And of course we've got Martin Weiss
jumping in tonight along with Mark and Bree. You will
not miss this or you'll be first in line for
a frontal of botomy. All right. So Mike Tyson lives
here in Vegas. I've interacted with him more than once.
I love the dude. He's an exceedingly bright mans. He
had a very rough childhood which led to the life

(01:13:15):
he began, and anything he ever loved was taken away
from him, so he became a very, very complicated figure.
But he's fifty eight years old now and he's a
guy who's, I believe, very one of the very interesting
people in the history of Americana. Him and Jake Paul
are gonna lock horns. They were gonna do it July twentieth.

(01:13:38):
There'll be eight two minute rounds. And I know some
people go thought this, I'm not one of them. I've
trained as a boxer. I've been in the ring. It's
the most rewarding workout you'll ever have, So I really
respect anybody will do this, And now I will say this,
as a society, we've always been infatuated with gladiator sports

(01:13:58):
and that's why people will watch it. So be on Netflix.
I think it'll get much bigger numbers than people realize. Well,
it's also have to go July twentyth and basically, Mike
Tyson had a fairly serious medical issue on an airplane recently.
I think it was a couple of weeks ago, right

(01:14:18):
around maybe because May twenty six he had an ulcer
flare up on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles
and it required pretty serious medical attention. As a result
of that, Mike Tyson was forced to postpone the fight.
He had a health check up when doctors required him
to limit his training over the next few weeks until
his condition improved and he started he can start to

(01:14:40):
train the way he wants to train again. I think
he's going to take this very serious. And I think
Jake Paul's going to take this very serious. And I
know people laughed at Jake Paul who won his first
fight against another YouTuber who thought he was a Joe.
Then he fought Nke Robinson and then an NBA player
professional athlete. And by the way, he played college football
at Washington. Nate's a tough dude man. And they said, oh, well,

(01:15:01):
he's not going to anything against a professional athlete. Well,
he put Nate Robinson to sleep. Since then, he's fought
a series of UFC fighters. He put tyro Old Willy
to sleep, beat him twice, beat you know, Ben Askron,
beat Anderson Silva. And you could say, oh, they're all older,
all washing, but well, you know what, you get in the
ring with him and think it's so easy. And then
he did fight Tyson Fury's brother. That was Tyson Fury's

(01:15:23):
brother's eighth professional boxing match. And by the way, if
you look at the records of the guys Fury fought,
they were all tomato cans. One guy he fought at
like a five and eighty eight record. That never should
have been his first match as against the real boxer.
He should have had some warm ups like Fury did.
And after the fight, Fury hugged me, says, you know what,
You're not what I thought you were. You're you're you

(01:15:44):
are kind of the real deal. If you just started
boxing at six when I was well, you'd have been something.
So this is gonna be a real fight. Okay, it's
people can knock it, laugh at it all they want.
I am not one of those people. All right. Now,
here's what's interesting. The fight is going to be at

(01:16:05):
Jerry Dome at AT and T Stadium in Dallas. And
it took a you know, it took some real collaboration
to get a new date set for the fight. It's
now going to be November fifteenth, and it'll be it'll
be a it'll be actually a cold main event. There's

(01:16:26):
actually going to be two females fighting, Katie Taylor and
Amanda Serrano for the super lightweight championship. That'll be the
cold main event. But I think Jason, Jake Paul and
Mike Tyson will draw a lot of attention. It's the
most cross generational sporting event in history because these guys
are thinking like thirty years apart in age. But Friday,
November fifteenth, I will, well, it'll be on I guess

(01:16:50):
the final go off probably a couple hours before I
signed on, so clearly we'll talk about it. Here's what's interesting.
It has to be on a Friday because the following
Monday there's an NFL Monday Night football game between the
Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans on Monday, November eighteenth,
Monday Night Football. So the stadium personnel apparently they need

(01:17:13):
a good couple of days, three days to set up
the stadium for the Money Night game on for the Cowboys,
So they're going to have a little competition. The original
July date would have been perfect. The NFL season is
not anywhere near yet. Well it is, but it's not.
They would have faced very little competition. The NBA Finals

(01:17:34):
will have been concluded. College football is still a month out.
But again, Mike Tyson had this ulcer flare up, and
you know, they got to work through these things. But
there's too much money involved. Both guys want this fight.
People are curious about this fight. Mike Tyson issued a
statement last week. He said, quote, although we had to
postpone the fight, I will resume training shortly. I'm thankful

(01:17:56):
to the medical staff that treated me, as well as MVP,
Netflix and the T and T Stadium for working diligently
to find the best rescheduled date. While we have a
new date, quote, the result will be the same no
matter when we fight. Jake Paul is gonna get knocked out,
and of course Jake Paul wasted no time in saying
I'm glad to postpone the fight. I don't want any excuses, right,
So here's twenty seven year old Jake Paul stepping up

(01:18:19):
in class I think against fifty eight year old Mike Tyson.
And again it's the co main event. There will be
another fight to females for the light heavyweight championship. So
whether or not you watch it, it will be streamed
on live on Netflix. It will be sanctioned as a
professional bout. The results will affect their pro records. It

(01:18:40):
will be contested as a heavyweight fight, and it's scheduled
eight two minute rounds. Yes, I can't lie. I will
be watching coming up. All want to bring in the crew.
I want to get their thoughts on Danny Hurley to
the Lakers, and I'm gonna give you a mine and
I'm not gonna pull punches. Keep it locked. You're listening
to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Well
that's writ you heard the man. The Bernie Fraddle Show

(01:19:01):
keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Fraddle. We
are coming to you A line from the tarrat dot
com studios here in Las Vegas. Tireract dot com will
help you get there and un match's election, fast free shipping,
fore Rodazard protection and over ten thousand recommended installers tyrat
dot com the way tire buying should be. Well. The

(01:19:23):
NBA Finals Game two is now what twelve fought sixteen
hours seventeen hours away. Let's put there the long and
the short of it is, though, after that game was played,
and I even think before, the attention is going to
be turned to whether or not Danny Hurley will actually

(01:19:43):
become the lakers next head coach. Now, I've got some
very strong thoughts on this, and I'm going to share
them in a minute. And it's my understanding, by the way,
that he's already flown back to Connecticut and I haven't
confirmed that, but I believe he has. So that means
neither here nor there whether he's going to ultimately take

(01:20:05):
the job. But as you heard me say to Mark Medina,
I believe it's ten percent that he takes it. I'll
take my medicine if I'm wrong. But before I get
to the reasons why I am saying what I'm saying,
I want to bring in the crew and get their thoughts.
They're all right there in the belly of the Beast
Los Angeles, and I'm sure they have some thoughts. So Martin,
let's start with.

Speaker 8 (01:20:24):
You, you know, start anywhere you want thirty thousand feet and
to send what are your thoughts on Danny Hurley being
the next Laker coach and do you think he will
end up being the next Laker coach.

Speaker 4 (01:20:36):
I think he will not end up being the next
Laker coach.

Speaker 7 (01:20:38):
I do think he will end up getting another raise
from Yukon as his good buddy Adrian Roger Ranowski just
you know, when he made that statement talking about Danny
Hurley being the next head coach of the Lakers, I
think that's a lot of positioning for the contract at Yukon.
But I also think if he were the next Lakers
head coach, it would be an abject disaster.

Speaker 4 (01:20:57):
Some of the stories that.

Speaker 7 (01:20:58):
You hear out of you kind of about Dan Hurley
don't seem to me the type of thing that would
work in the pros. Like Donovan Klingon, I believe it
was Donovan Klington who said that Dan Hurley has to
make four half pour shots before practice can start, or
you know, he wears the same suit and underwear and
shoes and socks.

Speaker 4 (01:21:17):
Like to me, all of that.

Speaker 7 (01:21:20):
That workinness works in undergrad but once you get to
the pros, you know, once you get to that grad
school level, the higher level, I don't know if it
works in the same way where the stars are the
players and not the coach.

Speaker 2 (01:21:33):
That is so well said, and I'm gonna I'm gonna
take what you just said there in a minute and
build upon that the stars are the players and not
the coach. In the NBA, it's it's cliches, hell, But
the NBA is a players league, and uh, and college
is a coaches league. And one other quick thing before
we get to breathe and mark look, uh, I know

(01:21:58):
Doug Gottlieb has been defending Danny Hurry. He's not a
crazy man. I don't think he's a crazy man. But
I've seen him go off on refs and I've seen
him go off during a game, and I know he's
got that gear. Okay, he's he's a brilliant teacher. He's
a chip off his old dad's block. And his record
is his record in college. You can't deny that he
did well at Rhode Island too, and he did well

(01:22:19):
in high school, so he knows what he's doing. But
it's a different mentality. There are horses for courses, and
I don't believe this is the right course for him.
And I think it's almost inevitable. Here's a guy who
what he's gonna you know, hypothetically, if he took the job,
they're gonna lose forty two games next year. How's he
going to deal with losing forty two games? That's that's

(01:22:41):
like reason number fourteen. All right, I'll get to my
I'll get to my diatribe in a minute. But Bri,
you are obviously very knowledgeable on sports. What are your
thoughts on this?

Speaker 1 (01:22:52):
So?

Speaker 9 (01:22:53):
I know we always say like NFL is king, but
I think NBA has become king and recycling coaches. I
mean kind of starting off with like Frank Vogel, Steve Nash,
Darvin Ham, I mean, all these coaches have kind of
just been all over the place like and kind of
like scapegoats, right, So I just think being an NBA
coach isn't what it used to be, and they don't

(01:23:13):
they don't really like have that respect that they would
have like in years past, and so I just I
don't think it would be like a good move. I
think I think, honestly like a JJ Reddick or somebody
else that would come in and kind of just be
unfortunately like Lebron's puppet, like you're just kind of there,
and you know, you wear the cute little sweatsuits and

(01:23:34):
the nice ties and and you know whatever, and you're
just kind of there just to kind of just be there.

Speaker 10 (01:23:40):
I guess I don't know what else to say.

Speaker 9 (01:23:42):
You can just kind of you're kind of just managing
like the practices, but what what's a coach right in
today's game? You're you're just kind of there. So, like
I said, I think JJ Reddick would probably be like
the best your your good face for the organization. And
I kind of think that makes more so if I
was Dan Hurley, I would just take the raise and
just stay in Yukon. Maybe go coach the Knicks in

(01:24:05):
five years when Thibodeau has gone through his whole like
three rosters of the Knicks, and go from there.

Speaker 2 (01:24:11):
That's another good point. I do think the day will
come more Danny Hurley will tip his toe, will dip
his to excuse me in the NBA. I just don't
think this is the time we'll see my ten percent
prediction remains. And as far you, JJ Reddick has at
least played in the NBA, I believe you said, fourteen
years in the NBA. So he gets that vibe, he

(01:24:32):
gets that lifestyle and that goes a long way with players.
Mark Ramsey, your thoughts.

Speaker 11 (01:24:38):
Just based on the talk of everybody of what kind
of side show, clown show the Lakers have become in
their current state.

Speaker 4 (01:24:48):
I would say stay away.

Speaker 11 (01:24:49):
From the Lakers because you're never going to win when
it comes to being a good coach, and if you
have to worry about what Lebron thinks about your decision,
and you'll never win.

Speaker 4 (01:25:02):
And it's all.

Speaker 11 (01:25:03):
It's it seems like everything is already going to be
against you when you get there. So stay in college
and see what other opportunities come along.

Speaker 2 (01:25:13):
Or stay at your common be the next coach k
or be the next John Wooden. For Kronam he's going
for a three peat, all right, So I'm with you,
all right, So kind of a good amalgam of thoughts
there across the board. Let me start by saying this,
I had a great talk with Chuck Daily once, so
what many of them? My daddy Rich was one of
the most elegant men you'd ever He dressed good, he

(01:25:35):
was He was just a cool dude. Even he admitted
when he walked into his NBA locker room for the
first time, they are like, who are you? We don't
know you, We don't He had to win these guys over.
Chuck Day told me that coaching an NBA team was
basically like managing an adult day care center. He didn't
say it the pejorative, he didn't say it in a
negative tone. These guys all have a base level of talent.

(01:25:56):
They're all multi millionaires ten times over, and they're grown
men with families and kids, and they're professionals, and so
there's a certain modicum of demeanor that you have to
show them if you want to get them to play
hard for you. Does Danny Hurley have that gear? Chuck

(01:26:19):
Daily had it in spades, and that's why he went
to three straight finals with the Pistons and almost repeated.
I saw Isaiah Thomas score forty two points on one
leg on a certain Sunday back in nineteen eighty eight,
and we'll never know would happened if he hadn't gotten hurt.
But they took the Lakers to seven, and then they

(01:26:40):
turned around and beat him in eighty nine and beat
him in ninety. That was Chuck Daily. Look you heard
me say this, I'm gonna repeat. It's their horses for courses.
The NBA is a players league. The college game is
a coaches league. Danny Hurley, I do believe is an
exquisite teacher of the game. He has empathy because he

(01:27:04):
struggled in college. Yeah. I think he ended up scoring
like a thousand points in his career teat Hall, but
he was never He was always in the shadow his brother,
Make no mistake now. His father, Bob Early, is a
legend in New Jersey. Coach won multiple state championships at St. Anthony's.
I swore to God listening to this guy talk basketball.
He's like listening to God talk basketball. I saw a

(01:27:26):
this feature once about his career. I can't remember where
I saw it. It was a long time ago. That actually
showed have been a practice and he was working in
one of his shooting guards on how to create a
shot off the dribble, Move to his left, get his
hands into the release point, position. If you want to
repeat success in sports, well, you have to have proper mechanics,

(01:27:48):
and that's how you repeat success. And I remember looking
at this kid and he's got his girl a little bit,
he's his son. You've now created an additional degree of
difficulty by the way you are moving your hands. And
he picked up this flaw which would have prevented this
kid from being a great shooter because he wasn't gonna
be able to repeat success because he had this hot
hitch and his release pointing. That's the kind of teaching

(01:28:11):
that the Hurlees do. I don't think you're gonna do
that in the NBA. I don't think it's gonna go over. Okay,
he's already a legend at Yukon. No one has repeated
since John Wooden did it in the sixties. He's got
a chance to be mentioned in the same sentence with
John Wooden. He's got it made in stores Connecticut. They
love him. He's always preached loyalty. So are you really

(01:28:32):
going to take off to Los Angeles the minute they
come calling with money? And I don't think he's driven
by money. He's already gonna make fifty million dollars in
his coaching more than that. So how many you know
more Hebrew Nationals can he eat? That's number one? Okay.
The other thing too, is I just mentioned moving to
Los Angeles. Now, I lived in southern California for a

(01:28:54):
lot of my life. I liked it, But people who
grow up in Jersey City might not see it that way.
An entirely different planet. His wife, Andrea, is a Jersey
City girl. She said she can channel her inner Snookie
anytime she wants. I don't think she wants to leave.
They got it made there. Colin Caylers even said you
can't improve unhappy. They're happy there. I don't think his

(01:29:16):
dad wants him to leave. I don't think his wife
is gonna want him to leave. Now, why is he listening?
Because that's what you do. You listen. You don't turn
your nose up at the Lakers. You pay them respect.
You listen to what they got to say. You never know.
You just anything can happen. I've always said anything can
happen in life and in sports. Hell, Bob Buker once
hit a home run off Sandy Kofax. You get my point.

(01:29:38):
But La would be a different planet just living in
La versus what they're used to. This is a dude
that's lived his entire life in the Northeast Corridor. I've
lived in three states, California, Michigan, and now Nevada. They're
all different. You be careful what you wish for because
it might all sound good. Then you get to this Lakers.

(01:30:00):
I didn't even mentioned the circus seven coaches. Seven coaches
since Phil Jackson left. This will now be Lebron's fourth coach.
If the Lakers were to win, Lebron's getting all the credit.
If the Lakers were to lose, guess who's getting blamed.
I think Darvin Ham got screwed. I like Darvinham. He

(01:30:21):
was on that four team with the Pistons. Great role player,
great defender, good dude. I don't know if you wanted
Russell Westbrook that was forced upon him. He did his
best to make ice cream out of you know what
on a horse manure couldn't work. I think Darvin Ham
was twenty five games over five hundred and got to
the conference finals last year, and they boomed him out
because they said he couldn't call players them. I don't know.

(01:30:42):
You get the point. Pick your poison. It's always going
to be something when the Dutch settles and the honeymoon's over,
how's it going to work with Danny Hurley? And then
I haven't even mentioned Brownie. And I got nothing against
Bronnie James. Every time I've heard him in an interview,
he seems like a very classy, dignified, respectful young man.
Loved the dude. I don't think he can play. I
don't know. I'm not seeing you can't play basketball, But

(01:31:04):
I'm sorry if you average four point eight points a
game at USC coming off the bench for a team
that was eight and twelve in conference. He was second
team All League in high school. Look, he's a good,
good dude. He's a good kid. But if his name
was Eddie Gazinski, we're really talking about him being drafted.
I don't think so. And you're gonna be for You're
gonna have that Michigan's forced on you, and you've got
to You've got to develop Bronnie James all the while

(01:31:26):
while Lebron is looming. Now, if Lebron left town and
they were really gonna start a complete rebuild, I might
make move my ten percent to twenty percent. I still
don't think it's a good move. This is this is
a disaster wait to happen. And it's not because Danny
Hurley can't coach. But I do believe in this particular

(01:31:47):
situation it is not a good fit. And by the way,
I don't care how good a coach you are, the
odds are stacked against you when you decide you're gonna
make the leap from to the NBA. Don't believe me.
You wait right there. I'm coming back with receipts. I
will give you some examples. I'm Bernie Fraddle. We're coming

(01:32:08):
to your line from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio
Tirerac dot com studios. Keep it locked right here. You're
listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
All right back on the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports
Radio coming to life from the Tarrack dot Com studios
here in Las Vegas. Coming up in thirty eight minutes
to dance Sensation Sweep in the Nation. What kind of
brand new food do you follow? About? What my name?

(01:32:29):
But I'm not done on this coaching thing. By the way,
A couple of good tweets here from Homer nineteen sixty seven,
Bernie NBA coaches are figureheads today. The days of strong
coaches who run the team are over. Earlys State Yukon.
The Lakers are a trash team run by Lebron James.
A little harsh, but spot to lie, all right, I
told you I'd bring receipts. So you think you want

(01:32:50):
to jump to the NBA because you had success in college,
don't tell that to John Beeline. I'm sure Martin remembers
when Beeline was at Michigan, did quite a job. Didn't
even last a season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. They ran
him out of town like a run and mule fourteen
and forty, and it just he said some things he
probably shouldn't have said that you can get away with

(01:33:11):
in college, but you can't get away with in the NBA.
It did not work out well for John Bline. How
about Billy Donovan. Well, Billy Donovan, by the way, was
the last college coach I believe to repeat. He did
a Florida. He goes to the Oklahoma City Thunder and
he's actually got a winning record. He's been there eight

(01:33:33):
nine years. He's taken teams to the playoffs. He actually
was one of the Chicago Bulls and now, of course, but
he hasn't had very much success there. At the point
is just because you won in college doesn't mean you're
gonna win in the pros. Fred Hoiberg, who did a
phenomenal job at Iowa State, he goes to the Chicago Bulls.

(01:33:54):
He lasted about three hundred games. He was forty games
under for under five four seasons with the Bulls. After
five great seasons at Iowa State. He did take the
Bulls to the playoffs once, but there was friction between
him and Jimmy Butler, and actually Jimmy Butler criticized Hoiberg
for not coaching the team hard enough. Go figure, maybe

(01:34:18):
he thought he wanted to do not be seen as
too hard of a coach. I don't know, all right.
Moving on, Brad Stevens, who I think is one of
the great basketball minds in all of basketball. They kicked
him upstairs at the front office. He took Butler to
back to back games National Championship lost to Duke one year,
anything lost to Yukon the other year. He's probably the

(01:34:41):
most successful example of collegiate to professional pipeline other than
a name I'm going to invoke in the brand new
fool what my name in about an hour. But look,
he coached the Celtics for eight seasons. He only missed
the playoffs once that was his first year there. Took
the Celtics to three conference finals routine They finished top
five coach the year, but following the twenty one season,

(01:35:02):
the Celtics lost the first round. Stevens decided to move
into the front office. He became president of Basketball Operations
and Danny Ainge stepped down. But even Brad Stevens couldn't
win in the NBA. There's some other ones that are
on the bad side of the Ledger Reggie Theis, who
had a pretty good coaching year coaching tenure at New

(01:35:22):
Mexico State, he took a job with the Sacramento Kings.
He lasted maybe a season and a half tops after
being a conference champion in New Mexico State. He started
his second season six and eighteen, and for whatever reason,
the Kings decided they were ready to move on from
I don't know what happened. He's been an assistant coach

(01:35:44):
I think for Minnesota, and I think he went back
to the college ranks. He's at Bethune Cookman now. But
so these are big time names, Reggie Theis, Brad Stevens,
Fred Hoiberg, Billy Donovan. Of course, John Beeline might be
the biggest disaster out of all these. Stanford had a
coach twenty years ago by the name of Mike Montgomery.
He had an incredible, a very illustrious college coaching career,

(01:36:08):
got to the Final Four in nineteen ninety eight with Stanford,
he was Coach of the Year one year in college,
he was inducted to the College Basketball Hall of Fame.
But not only was his move to the NBA completely unsuccessful,
it was a very short lived one. He was thirty
eight games under five hundred, spent just two seasons with
the Golden State Warriors, never won more than thirty four games,

(01:36:31):
the roster never checked out, the team never really improved,
and Golden State gave him the boot. He went back
to cal Berkeley and then he ended up retiring about
ten years ago. How about Leonard Hamilton. Okay, Leonard Hamilton
has been a fixture at Florida State for twenty two years.
They haven't had great success recently, but I think he's

(01:36:51):
done a damn good job there. But don't ask him
about his time in the NBA. He went to the
Washington Wizards in two thousand and one, exactly nineteen games
nineteen and sixty three. He lasted just one season in
the NBA after he had great success in college. He
had Oklahoma State and Miami. When Leonard Hamilton joined the

(01:37:15):
Wizards in two thousand and they managed to only win
nineteen games. That were the fewest games the Wizards had
ever won in their twenty four year history. Of course,
this year's team got Leonard off the hook. They won
fifteen games, and of course, as I said, Leonard Hamilton
has since moved back to the college game, where he's
been at Florida State since two thousand and two. Now,

(01:37:38):
Hall of Fame legend Lon Krueger everywhere he coached in
college where there was Illinois, Florida, Oklahoma, and UNLV had
great success. He did spend one season as an assistant
coach for the Knicks, but when he jumped to become
a head coach for the Atlanta Hawks, he was fifty
three games under five hundred in about two and a

(01:37:58):
half years. He was a Hall of Fame legend college coach.
I believe Lon Kruger is a trivia question. I believe
he's the only college coach to take four different teams
in college to the NCAA Tournament UNLB, Oklahoma, I want
to say Florida in Illinois. I have to double check that,

(01:38:19):
but regardless, he did it all right. So he spends
two and a half season with the Hawks, never had
winning records. Twenty seven games into his third season, the
team was eleven and sixteen. He got fired Lon Krueger,
a Hall of Fame coach Tim Floyd. You remember that name.
He was one of the only coaches who actually got

(01:38:41):
a second head coaching job in the NBA. Tim Floyd
was brought in after the Jordan era Bulls were broken up.
Now that must have been tough. Didn't go well. After
having real good success at Iowa State, he only had
forty nine wins for the Bulls over four seasons. After
that unsuccessful jaunt, he found himself as the head coach

(01:39:04):
of the Charlotte Hornets. Lasted exactly one season. How can
I how can I not give this list without two
classic names that I know? You remember John Calipari who
just left Kentucky to go to Arkansas, And I think
most would agree he's had a pretty successful career in college,

(01:39:27):
and in nineteen ninety six he decided he'd make the jump.
He was a great coach at UMass back in the day,
jumps to the New Jersey Nets forty games under five
hundred in just a little over two years, two and
a half seasons to be exact. Twenty games into his
third season, the team started three and seventeen. So not
only did Calipari go forty games under five hundred with

(01:39:48):
the New Jersey Nets, the team got worse every year.
Get the picture. Finally, PJ Carlessimo had a solid career
at Seaton Hall. Got to the finals to our Martin
Rembery lost to our Michigan Wolverines in nineteen eighty nine.
As a head coach at Seaton Hall. Five years later,
he jumps to the NBA the Portland Trail Blazers. He's

(01:40:11):
actually had multiple head coaching gigs in the NBA. He
had some success with the Blazers, got to the playoffs,
but never got out of the first rounds. He was fired.
Then he spent time as a Warriors head coach. The
most noteworthy thing that happened to PJ. Carlissimo in his
tenure with the Warriors, he got choked by Latrell's Spreewell
choked him out during practice. Carla Simo was fired, spent

(01:40:33):
time as an assistant, ended up also coaching the super
Sonics in the Oklahoma City Founder and the Brooklyn Nets.
None of them ever worked out. So if those aren't
enough receipts for you, I don't know what is. I
would just say this. I would just say this, be
careful what you wish for. I'm sticking to my I'm
sticking to my prediction and I could be wrong, but

(01:40:54):
I'm sticking to it. I give it ten percent ten
percent that Danny Hurley ends up being the Lakers head coach.
Coming up is the lifetime ban recently of a Potter's
infielder by the name of Tukapedo Marcano, following up with
Johntay Porter, an indication that the relationship between professional sports

(01:41:19):
and sports betting is a little bit more complicated than
we one of thought. I'm gonna share some things with
you coming up, but not next our guy Martin Weiss
with the latest.

Speaker 7 (01:41:30):
The Florida Panthers took Game one of the Stanley Cup
Final three to nothing over the Edmonton Oilers. In baseball,
t Oscar Hernandez hit two home runs, including a grand slam.
Dodgers beat the Yankees for the second night in a row.
Aaron Judge hit two home runs, but the Yankees lost
eleven to three. Reds won their seventh straight game, beating
the Cubs four to three. Andrew Abbott gets his fifth
win on the years. Has Natty improved to thirty two

(01:41:53):
and thirty three second in the NL Central. The Toronto
Blue Jay shout out the Oakland A's seven and nothing.
Kevin Gosman through a complete game with ten strikeouts. Padres
beat the Diamondbacks to thirteen to one. San Diego outscored
Arizona twenty three to four in the last two games.
Phillies beat them Mets sevent to two in London. Bryce
Harper with three hits, including his fifteenth homer on the season.

(01:42:14):
Fifty four thousand in attendance there. Across the Pond, Philadelphia
with a forty five to nineteen record. Guardians won an
eight nothing lead I'm sorry one and eight nothing game
over the Marlins. Cleveland with a three game lead over
the Royals in the AL Central. Astros beat the Angels
six to one. Houston five games under five one hundred
and thirty and thirty five. Game two of the NBA

(01:42:36):
Finals Sunday night in Boston, Celtics lead the Mavericks one
to nothing in the series. That one game was one
oh seven eighty nine. Boston Collins Baseball Super Regionals North Carolina,
Florida State, and Virginia all advance. Evansville beat number one
seed Tennessee to force a game three. Later today, Scottie
Scheffler leads the Memorial by four strokes and US Men's

(01:42:57):
soccer lost eight five to one exhibition and against Columbia.

Speaker 4 (01:43:01):
Bernie back to you, all right.

Speaker 2 (01:43:04):
Good stuff, Martin and Bartin no doubt you heard about
the John tay Porter situation. Do you ever? Did you
guys talk about that on your show at all recently?

Speaker 4 (01:43:10):
We did, We did well at the time.

Speaker 2 (01:43:12):
Sure.

Speaker 7 (01:43:12):
And I also heard about the Tikipeda Mercados as well.
You know, we talked about that earlier today.

Speaker 2 (01:43:18):
Yeah. And and here's the situation that has also rekindled
the investigation with respect to John tay Porter. Two more
people have been I think arrested. We'll get to that
in a minute. So let me start by saying this.

(01:43:39):
We are now in a situation where this spring, I
think has become a sort of reckoning of sorts for
the world of sports betting, the sports betting industry. Obviously,
it's hitting a real inflection point now and we are
finding that this coexistence between legal betting and league operation

(01:44:01):
is popular. It's immensely popular. But there are real challenges now.
And I was just in Detroit last week. I talked
to my old crony's doing stats for the Lions, and
they told me how draconin the NFL is in terms
of cracking down on guys betting and so on and
so forth. So the enforcement is there, the checkpoints, you're there,

(01:44:21):
the checks and balancers are there, but people keep stepping
out of line, and it's baffling to me. Just this
past week Tuesday, Major League Baseball suspended five players for
betting on baseball, including the lifetime bad on potters infielder
took a Pet Marsano, who Martin just mentioned. Because each

(01:44:42):
one of these knuckleheads we're wagering on Major League Baseball games,
which is a complete blatant violation of league rules. How
stupid do you have to be? They've had symposium after symposium,
warning after warning, written policies. I mean, if you don't
know by now that they don't want you betting on

(01:45:05):
your own sport, then there's no help for you. In
the NFL, they don't want you betting on anything, but
baseball is a little bit more liberal in the sense
that you know, you want to bet on a hockey game, okay,
but just don't bet on baseball. So what happened this
past week in Major League Baseball followed a similar lifetime
suspension levied by the NBA on John ty Porter, who's

(01:45:28):
a center for the Toronto Raptors. And let's not forget
we're not that far removed on federal bank and tax
raw charges on Ipe Mizzerhara, the former interpreter for the
Dodgers pitcher sho Heil tany or Dodgers show heal tiny.
He's not pitching this year. Okay, you get the point.
All of these incidents have happened in the last sixty
to ninety days. We have it's fair to say a

(01:45:53):
very uneasy relationship between legal sports betting, which is growing,
and leaves and bouncers now thirty eight states where it's legal,
and leagues working to maintain the competitive optics and integrity
because let's face it, no one wants to see a
nineteen nineteen Black Sox scandal AG. And I will tell
you sports are definitely afraid of any of the four

(01:46:14):
majors becoming anything that would resemble WWE. You get my point,
all right? Sports betting overall, make no mistake, it is
soaring to unprecedented heights. Period. There are record levels of revenue.
The total handle in twenty twenty three was the highest ever.

(01:46:34):
We're going to exceed that by quite a bit in
twenty four. Every major sports league, including Major League Baseball,
they've built an extensive portfolio of gambling and related business relationships.
It's a battering ram. It's part of advertising. So obviously
it's aroused the anger and emotion, with some fans calling

(01:46:58):
that this is big time hypocrisy, because what those leagues
are trying to do is, you know, create a line
of demarcation between what is and what isn't permissible for
players because it's about optics. You see where they're going
with that. A lot of fans are like, well, hey,
if you're benefiting from sports betting, why can't your players
do it well? We've already explained why. And if you

(01:47:20):
don't like, you know, if it means that much, do
you quit the game? And I'm one of those people.
If Pete Rose lives here in Las Vegas after thirty
five years he was banned in nineteen eighty nine by
a p rg Amati, I no longer thinks it serves
any fruitful purpose to ban Pete Rose. He served his penance.
Let the people decide, get him on the ballots, see

(01:47:40):
if he should be in the Hall of fam You
don't want him work in baseball anymore? Fine, but most
of his is my understanding. His baseball exploits predated his
betting situation, So story for a different day. But it
does seem to be a little a little hypocritical, okay.
And I think there are a lot of people that
have been about this that they believe it sort of

(01:48:03):
sacrifices some of people's stile rights. But Rob Manfred's spoken
on this. He says, here's Rob Manfriend's quote. We have
been clear that the privilege of playing in baseball comes
with a responsibility to refrain from engaging in certain types
of behavior that are legal for other people. Fine by me,

(01:48:23):
Major League Baseball, though, has learned that a lot of
wagering activities are are now starting to center around certain
sportsbook operators. But they're legal. All right. Here's here's the problem,
and this is this is really, frankly a tragedy because
you dream of being in the major league your whole

(01:48:44):
life and then you you get there and now you're
banned because you damage or you throw away your your
your career just to gamble. And the irony is is
this poor son of a gun to kipedo mars. It's
been reported that they placed over two hundred and thirty
one wagers and won like four percent of them that

(01:49:07):
liked it's insult to injury man. I mean that's like,
that's like winning the power Ball walking on front and
getting struck by lightning. It's not a good day for you. Right.
So Marcano bet apparently more than one hundred and fifty
thousand dollars baseball an average of about four hundred dollars
a bet. Lost ninety six percent of his games bet

(01:49:28):
partly he's like a knucklehead. He bet games involving the
Pirates while he was playing for the Pirates, his former team,
and there was also a minor league pitcher for the
Potters by the name of Jay Groom. He suspended for
a year. He bet about four hundred and fifty dollars
on Major League Baseball games and posted losses of four
hundred and thirty dollars, and apparently of the thirty two

(01:49:48):
bets he made, he only won two of them. So
now one of these guys are breaking the rules by
betting and jeopardizing their livelihood severely. They pretty much suck
at it. Not a good parlay upon intended. There's also
a minor league pitcher for the Diamondbacks named Andrew Soufrank
who's also suspended for a year. He only bet four

(01:50:11):
hundred dollars on games, but lost two hundred and seventy two.
He made five. Check that he made twenty eight wagers
on Major League Baseball games, won five. So if you're
only betting, if your total handles four hundred and forty bucks,
you bet twenty eight games, you've been like fifteen bucks
a game. Really is anybody check what the minimum salary

(01:50:34):
is for a major league pitcher these days or a
major league player. Another pitcher for the Oakland a is
Michael Kelly. He also received a year long suspension for
conduct involving ninety nine dollars with the bets involving major
League baseball games. All Right, at the end of the day,
the kind of stupidity we're talking about here is really

(01:51:00):
an issue because you're talking about minuscule amounts, guys that
don't know how to bet, and they're jeopardizing their career. Now, Marsiano,
it's minunderstanding. Is the first Major leaguer to receive a
permanent ban from gambling since Pete Rose agreed to that
similar penalty in nineteen eighty nine, when it was alleged
that he bet games as a Reds player manager from

(01:51:20):
eighty five to eighty seven. All right again, Rob Manfred
weighed in with a quote. He said, quote the long
standing prohibition against betting on Major League Baseball games by
those in the sport has been a bedrock principle for
over a century. End quote. Which is true. If you've
ever set foot in a major league clubhouse, it's there

(01:51:42):
in black and white for the whole world to see.
You don't bet on major League baseball, by the way,
not for nothing, Miss O'Hara, ippy remember him. He pleaded
guilty Tuesday to the federal charges, faces up to thirty
three years in prison. Also has to pay restitution to
Shoho Tani and the irs. His is a sentencing. It

(01:52:05):
a sentencing is scheduled for October twenty fifth. But we're
not done. We talked about John tay Porter with Martin.
Two more have been charged in that betting scandal, and
I'll bring you up to date on that, because these
are real stories involving real people and the times we're

(01:52:25):
living in. That again involve legalized sports betting in thirty
eight states, but not if you are playing your sport. Now,
would I tell you what's going on in this John
tay Porter thing? It might, it might give you a shivers,
because this is far more serious. By the way, shortly
after my show tonight, our podcast will be going up

(01:52:48):
or you will be taking care of that. If you
missed any of tonight's show, be sure to check out
the podcast. Just search Fox Sports Radio wherever you get
your podcasts. Be sure to also follow rate review the podcast.
Asked again, just search Fox Sports Radio wherever you get
your podcasts. You'll see the show posted right after we
get off the air again, Breed will be taking care

(01:53:09):
of that coming up we continue. Two more men charged
Thursday in the sports betting scandal that basically cost John
tay Porter his job for life with the Toronto Raptors.
H'm Bernie Frattle. We're coming to your life from the
Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tirack dot Com studios. Keep
it locked right here. You're listening to the Bernie Frattle
Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right, back on the

(01:53:54):
Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to live from
the Tarrat dot Com studios here in a Lot Vegas,
eleven minutes away. Top of the hour. The dance sensation
sweeping the nation. What kind of brand new fool of you?
Followed by what my name? We got bre Tonight, we
got Martin Weiss Tonight, we got Mark Tonight, Mark Ramsey.

(01:54:14):
All right back to John tay Porter. This is how
crazy these things can go. His lawyer has now shared
the following thought that he was basically in over his
head because of addiction gambling, and this scandal has now
involved multiple people, and the core complaint accuses a gentleman

(01:54:38):
by the name of Amar. I don't know. I'm not
going to pronounce his name. I can't. It's one of
those tough names to pronounce, and he had pressed an
NBA player identified as Player one to quote take care
of gambling debts by leaving games early, which would guarantee
payouts for those who bet on this player, John tay Porter,

(01:54:59):
to to perform in those games. For instance, let me
give an example. Let's say you wanted to better prop bet.
You know what a prop bet is. It's a side bet,
has nothing to do with the outcome of the game.
But it could be something along the lines of, let's
say you were betting on John tay Porter to make
three or more three pointers in the game, and if

(01:55:20):
he hits, if he hits the under, you collect money
you bet the under. So johntay Porter would would perhaps
I'm giving examples of how this worked. This isn't a
specific case, but example, he leaves the game early before
he gets that third three pointer and guess what, you
collect the money. So the defendants to do this for

(01:55:42):
charge with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and they have
an interplay. Interplease yet, But the NBA's investigation found that
johntay Porter purposely limited his participation in the game on
March twentieth, between the Raptors and the Sacramento Kings, specifically
to quote, influenced the outcome of one or more bets.

(01:56:02):
In his performance against the Brooklyn Nets, Porter claimed he
felt ill after playing just three minutes. The NBA also
found out that prior to the game, John Tay Porter
has closed confidential information about his health status to an
individual he knew to be an NBA better and a
different individual associated this situation with Porter also bet that

(01:56:26):
Porter would underperform in March twentieth. That's part of an
eighty thousand dollars parlay the Better Place with an online
sports book. It also turns out that from January through
March to twenty twenty four, while traveling with the Raptors
and their G League team, John Ty Porter himself also
placed thirteen bets on NBA games using someone else's betting accounts. Now,

(01:56:50):
those bets ranged from as small as fifteen grand to
well that's not small to twenty two grand, and the
total payouts on those bets was seventy seven. He netted
twenty one thousand dollars in winnings. See you see the
fix was in So now this is get it out
of control completely and two more have been charged in

(01:57:11):
his betting scandal. Two more men were charged Thursday in
this betting scandal that has essentially cost NBA player John
tay Porter his career. And I could give you the names.
What they're meaningless their defendants in federal court now as
part of a wire fraud case. But what they did
was they used an NBA player and used inside information

(01:57:37):
having to do with prop bets, apparently that he could control,
meaning you know, you might bet the over unders he's
the over under fifteen points. He checks out of the
game because he's sick before he gets to his fifteen points.
The fix is in. The Kobayashi mero is in. You
know darn well that that's not going to fly. This
is very serious business. And these guys won. And when

(01:57:59):
they did, apparently a gentleman with the last name of
Moa in this March twentieth game. I've just mentioned this,
this betting conspiracy, this betting group netted over one point
three million dollars according to the complaint, and apparently some
of the other players who got the information got percentage
of the cuts. And this was not a small amount

(01:58:21):
of money. So these guys are you know, they're all
out on bond. I think they're arrangements for Tuesday. But
it all happened because player one, which I believe they
are referring to, Jontay Porter quote a mass significant gambling
debts and he needed to clear his obligations by doing
special favors for these players. That's how serious this is,
and that's why people are watching it. Coming up? What

(01:58:45):
kind of brand new fool do you? Followed by? What
my name? Keep it? Locke listening to the Bernie Frattle
Show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (01:58:52):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports Radio

Speaker 2 (01:59:05):
Well, that's right, you heard the man. The Bernie Fraddle

live from the tarrec dot com studios here in Las Vegas.
Fox Sports Radio. Tiraq dot com will help you get
there at Don Matt's selection, fast free shipping, free road
aser protection and over ten thousand recommend it installers direct
dot com. The way tire buying should be. What we've

(01:59:27):
come to that juncture in the show. You know what
you love it. You can't lay without it. Because see
what we do here on this show is we observe
little Yogi Berra once said, you can observe a lot
by watching, and we do see because every day around
this great country of ours, from Seed to Oily Sea,
and around the world, people do things. The engage in
activities that are questionable that cause you to look at scams. Now,

(01:59:48):
sometimes they're relatively innocuous. Other times they are far more
serious that can lead to arrests and jail in prison
and all kind of bad stuff. But regardless of what
the event is, regardless of what the activity is, regardless
of what the behavior is, no matter what these things are,
they always leave us scratching our head and asking ourselves,

(02:00:11):
what kind of brand new fool are you?

Speaker 9 (02:00:19):
So?

Speaker 1 (02:00:20):
What kind of brand new fool are you?

Speaker 2 (02:00:23):
This one's a beauty, Well, they all are, but this
one is actually really got a couple of twists and
turns that are crazy. We take you to Yakima, Washington,
and we introduce you to a thirty year old gentleman
by the name of David Sharp. Now, David Sharp happened
to be driving around one night, and it was late

(02:00:46):
in the evening and probably about two am in his
flatbed pickup, and he decided he was hungry. You want
to looking for a little nash. I don't know, maybe
he'd been yeah, maybe he'd had a few few to
me and he creamed a mints, or maybe he'd been
smoking the sticky icky, whatever the hell the case may be.
He was looking for some food and Taco Bell was

(02:01:10):
his fancy. So he pulled up to a Taco Bell
in Yakima, Washington, and it was right around two am,
and one of the employees had to break the news
to mister Sharp that they had just closed, so mister
Sharp was not going to get his chiloop or whatever
the hell he wanted right Well, this is where the

(02:01:32):
story gets fun. As it were, the employee says that quote,
the driver of this flatbag truck became immensely upset, saying
that he would break their windows if they didn't serve
him food. Then he began pounding on the front doors
of the restaurant saying he was going to break in.
Finally he left. Well they thought maybe that was the

(02:01:53):
end of it, but guess what. A few minutes later,
that pick up turned around came back to taco bell
and fired shots into the taco bell. Yes, shots fired,
real shots fired. Well, the employee called nine to one
one saying the man was shooting at them, and actually

(02:02:14):
police were quickly able to locate the pickup and detained
the driver, mister David Sharp, thirty years old, and inside
of the truck, police said they found a nine milimeter
pistol with a loaded magazine and a bullet chambered in
the center console, another twenty two pistol loaded in a
pocket just behind the driver's seat, a glock nine millimeter
pistol with an empty magazine, and they also found two

(02:02:37):
nine millimeter millimeter casings on the front windshield and plenty
of other shellcasings and live bullets and a center console.
Officers then investigated the taco bell and said they found
a bullet hole in the building, as well as a
second that grazed an exterior wall. Now, mister Sharp was
facing charges of a drive by shooting, do you I harassment,

(02:03:01):
malicious mischief, and violation of a concealed pistol license? But
then what's crazy? There's a follow up. It turns out
the man accused of shooting the Yakima taco bell and
threatenings employees last month will not face charges. How the
hell did that happen? Apparently the charges were reviewed and

(02:03:22):
dropped because they did not appear to constitute a felty huh. Well,
he can still be charged in district court of Municipal war.
But anyway, your flight's it. You got to be kidding me,
mister David Sharp. Want a little taco bell Yakima, Washington.
What kind of brand new full of you? Okay, Brie,

(02:03:42):
looking forward to what you got for us tonight?

Speaker 10 (02:03:46):
Alrighty okay.

Speaker 9 (02:03:47):
So driver's ad has a whole new meeting after police
in Pennsylvania arrested a man for allegedly being drunk while
teaching a teenager how to drive. Officer responded to reports
of a reckless driver. As the call reported, a white
pickup truck drove around the roundabout before driving into a ditch.

(02:04:09):
As the truck backed up onto the road, it reportedly
ran over the sidewalk and hit several cones. Police found
the truck at a stop sign and identified the driver
as an innocent fourteen year old boy. A man in
the front passenger seat, identified as thirty nine year old
Jonathan Storms, allegedly told officers he was teaching a family

(02:04:31):
member how to drive. Police said he was intoxicated, smelt
of alcohol, slurred his words, and couldn't get out of
the car without stumbling. A ride was called to pick
up Storms from the scene, and police told him to
leave and just leave the truck there and come back
in the morning.

Speaker 10 (02:04:47):
No, no problem, right.

Speaker 9 (02:04:48):
Ten minutes after he left, Storms returned and tried to
get back into the vehicle. Police said he walked half
a block down down the road before he started dan
in the middle of the street, putting himself at risk
of being hit about. Cars came at him, but he
avoided all of them, and then he was eventually brought

(02:05:09):
in for public drunkenness. He is now facing charges of
endangering the welfare of children, corruption of miners, public drunkenness,
and permitting an unless unlicensed driver. Jonathan Storms of Pennsylvania.
What kind of brand new fool are you?

Speaker 2 (02:05:26):
Wow? This guy's got a body of work. Yeah wow?
What did the report indicate what he blew in terms.

Speaker 9 (02:05:33):
Of the No no, but I mean I mean in
that kind of punishment, like I think you got to
go hang out with like the homage people for a while.

Speaker 10 (02:05:40):
And kind of.

Speaker 9 (02:05:40):
Just like reset your brain and your morals and values
and like, don't don't be doing that.

Speaker 10 (02:05:45):
That's so dangerous. And the fourteen year old, right.

Speaker 2 (02:05:47):
It doesn't run into Harrison Ford and get left. Look
at the job that movie. Yes, Kelly Gillis, all right,
that's the story for a different day. All right, great job, Bray,
Martin Wiss, you're a vet at this game. What do
you got for us tonight?

Speaker 4 (02:06:02):
All right? Bernie.

Speaker 7 (02:06:03):
As a common theme in Brand New Fool, crime truly
sometimes doesn't really pay. And I think this we're gonna
have this same kind of scene here. Andrew Wicklson is
a mechanic in Indianapolis, Indiana, Okay, And this says he
was outside of the door of a business.

Speaker 4 (02:06:21):
Now, this business will.

Speaker 7 (02:06:22):
Play a major role as to why this guy's a
Brand New Fool in just the moment, but I'll save
that part for last.

Speaker 4 (02:06:29):
Okay. So, Wilkerson was either trying to steal.

Speaker 7 (02:06:33):
A car or he alleges that it was a car
he was supposed to work on. Wickerson, in his defense,
is a mechanic, okay, But he was arguing with somebody
who came out of this business saying that Hey, I'm
gonna call the police on you because you're trying to
steal my car, all right, He says he was just
trying to do his job and take the car for
an inspection at the muffler shop next door. Now, this

(02:06:57):
conversation escalated further, and for they're further until Wilkerson entered
the business in which Archer lit'sten Gavin Archer was standing.

Speaker 4 (02:07:07):
The business Bernie was a jiu jitsu studio.

Speaker 2 (02:07:10):
Oh my goodness.

Speaker 7 (02:07:11):
So Wilkerson ended up walking into this place and talking
all types of stuff and ended up with a knuckle
sand which is gonna be black eye on the news.
And it just stands the reason, if you're gonna try
to steal a car, maybe outside of the jiu jitsu
studio is not the best place to try to do it.

Speaker 4 (02:07:29):
I can think of a few places.

Speaker 7 (02:07:30):
The police station, jiu jitsu studio, you know, boxing, boxing,
Those are places I'm probably not trying to steal a car.
Next time Wilkerson is in this predicament, if he ever
finds himself again, I tooges the school for the Blonde.

Speaker 2 (02:07:46):
I gotta tell you Channel Channel are paging Dave Chappelle
when keeping a real goes terribly wrong, You're gonna go
to a jiu jitsu studio and steal a car. So
what's interesting is the Midwest represent the night. I don't
think we've had one from Indiana. So we had Yakama, Washington, Pennsylvania,
Homage Country, and in Indianapolis. No Florida tonight. This is

(02:08:11):
like the first time in a while that we hadn't
had one from Florida or maybe overseas. Anyway, All good stuff,
great job everybody. That of course allows us to segue
into our second favorite bit that we lovingly referred to
as what my name? Here we go, all right? Recently
I became the oldest w NBA player to score thirty

(02:08:34):
points in a game Martin Wies what my name.

Speaker 4 (02:08:38):

this past week, I became the first WNBA player to
score thirty five points, ten rebounds, and get five steals
in a single game.

Speaker 10 (02:09:01):
Bre what my name Caitlyn Clark?

Speaker 2 (02:09:06):
I'll take the guests, but it's not Caitlin Clark, but
good on you for the effort. Became the first WNBA
player about a week ago thirty five points, ten rebounds,
and five steals in the same game. Mark Ramsey, what
my name? It's a big time player. Probably the best.

Speaker 4 (02:09:20):
Player in the league is their first name Asia.

Speaker 2 (02:09:22):
Her first name is Asia and her last name is Will,
so the judges will allow it. You got it, all right?
You guys are on fire tonight. You're in fuego, in fuego.
All right, Let's flip to baseball. You know, starting in
two thousand and eight, they started pitch tracking the miles
per hour on every single pitch. I'm the only Major

(02:09:46):
League baseball pitcher in history to strike out a batter
on three pitches and have all three pitches be one
hundred miles an hour. Martin Weiss, what my name?

Speaker 7 (02:10:00):
This is better known as Livy Dunn's boyfriend Paul Skins.

Speaker 2 (02:10:06):
Points bonus points for throwing the poo in there, Libby Dunn,
Mark Martin, listen, tell the people who Livey Dunn is oh.

Speaker 7 (02:10:15):
Look with their millions of followers on TikTok and Instagram.
I think the people may already know, but Livy Dunn,
famous for being an LSU gymnast, that.

Speaker 2 (02:10:23):
Is exactly correct. So you guys are three for three
in fuego. All right, I am the last NBA player
to be a Finals MVP in back to back seasons. Bri,
you're gonna get this one, Brie. What my name?

Speaker 10 (02:10:42):
KD Kevin Kevin Durants.

Speaker 2 (02:10:46):
All right, you guys are just showing off. Now, okay,
you're just showing off. All right. Danny Hurley has won
back to back championships with Yukon Huskies and college basketball.
I'm the last coach to win back to back championships
in college basketball. Mark Ramsey, what my name?

Speaker 11 (02:11:08):
I can only think of the female con Yukon team.

Speaker 2 (02:11:15):
No, well, it's this is male, the male bachelor. I
probably should have bestified. Moving along, Okay, moving along, I
am the last NBA Finals check that. I already did
that one. Excuse me, excuse me, I've been drinking. I promise.
I'm the last coach to win back to back in

(02:11:35):
college basketball championships. I know Danny Hurley has just done it,
but I'm the last coach to do it. Martin Wises
what my name?

Speaker 7 (02:11:43):
You mentioned him early in the show, Bernie, that's one.
Oh gosh, what's his name now? I'm not see his
face for coaching Providence coaches the Chicago Bulls, Billy Donovan,
There you go, Billy.

Speaker 2 (02:11:53):
Donovan is correct? A mundo and I do that typically
once the show, where I'll reference the name earlier in
the show. Good on you for for yeah, keep you
track of that all.

Speaker 4 (02:12:05):
I did the question for you though, real quick?

Speaker 7 (02:12:07):
Where do you come down on a fifty nine year
old man named Billy?

Speaker 9 (02:12:13):
Do?

Speaker 4 (02:12:13):
We twitch to William and I'm.

Speaker 2 (02:12:15):
I'm gonna have to get back on that one. I'm
gonna have to get back here on that one. I
that's a that's like you froze me on a curveball there.
I don't I never really gave it much thought. How
old was Billy Bardi when he died eighty? I don't know.
I have to get back to you on that one. Uh,
that's fair, that's fair, all right. I'm the last college

(02:12:39):
basketball coach to win three championships in a row. Brie,
what my name?

Speaker 10 (02:12:48):
John woulden?

Speaker 2 (02:12:49):
You guys are just on fire.

Speaker 12 (02:12:51):
You've at six in a row tonight, all right, while
we're into streaks, Well, the Women's College World Series just
came to an end, and I am now the only
coach to win four straight Women's College World Series softball championships.

Speaker 2 (02:13:13):
Mark Ramsey, what my name?

Speaker 4 (02:13:16):
I don't know the coach's name, but it was Oklahoma.

Speaker 2 (02:13:18):
Well that's not bad. Can't the judges can't allow it?
But good on you. You know the school I am the Well,
I'm the only coach to win four straight World Series
Women's World Series Softball championships. Martin Weiss, What.

Speaker 4 (02:13:35):
My name is that? Patty Gasso?

Speaker 2 (02:13:38):
It is Patty Gasso. Let's see one, two, three, four,
seven in a row. You guys have got. This is amazing,
This is tremendous, outstanding, good stuff. All right. I'm the
only basketball coach in history to win a championship at
the NBA level and on the college level. Mark Ramsey,

(02:13:59):
what my name?

Speaker 4 (02:14:02):
Digger Phelps?

Speaker 2 (02:14:04):
Former Notre Dame coach. Love it not Digger Phelps. I
am the only basketball coach in history to win championships
in the NBA and in the college game. Bre Muro
What my name.

Speaker 10 (02:14:19):
Of Phil Jackson?

Speaker 2 (02:14:22):
Not a bad guess. I don't recall Phil ever coached
in college.

Speaker 9 (02:14:25):
But you're thinking as a player. I'm sorry, I'm sorry,
appreciate the effort.

Speaker 2 (02:14:29):
I'm the only basketball coach to win championships in the
NBA and on the college level. Martin Wiss, what.

Speaker 4 (02:14:35):
My name that is Larry Brown?

Speaker 2 (02:14:37):
It is, of course Larry Brown won it with Kansas
back in nineteen eighty eight, and then won with the
Pistons in two thousand and four. I had the privilege
of covering that team. Larry Brown was a weirdo, but
he could coach all right. As a high school player
basketball player in Ohio, I broke all of Lebron James

(02:14:58):
high school scoring records. Mark Ramsey, what my name.

Speaker 4 (02:15:04):
Would it happened to be? Bronnie James?

Speaker 2 (02:15:08):
Brownie actually went to high school in California. But good effort.

Speaker 11 (02:15:12):
Good guess I thought you transfer just kidding.

Speaker 2 (02:15:14):
He might have I you know, I have to check
that out, all right. I as an Ohio schoolboy, wonder
I broke all of bron James high school basketball scoring records.
Martin Weiss, What my name.

Speaker 4 (02:15:30):
Is that?

Speaker 2 (02:15:31):
It is Luke Canard, who is mister basketball in Ohio.
And also I believe it was an all state quarterback
and option quarterback. Good athlete, didn't quite pan out pretty
good A duke too, didn't quite pan out in the
NBA like I thought he would, but he had his
moments had his moments? All right, last one. We'll see
if we can go undefeed it here, and I think
you guys are probably gonna do it. I'm the only

(02:15:51):
white basketball player in history to be offered a contract
by the Harlem Globetrotters Bremuro. What my name?

Speaker 10 (02:16:01):
I was gonna say, Pete Maravich, But I don't think
that's right.

Speaker 2 (02:16:05):
What were you gonna say?

Speaker 10 (02:16:06):

Don't believe that's the correct answer. Oh what don't believe
that's the correct answer. You can look it up. But
it's someone else played a lot longer action than what
she did, although she did have a share. According to
my research, I was assessed the most technical files in
his street of the NBA. Mark Ramsey, what my name?

Speaker 4 (02:17:04):
I'm gonna go with Darryl Dawkins.

Speaker 2 (02:17:06):
Oh, Chocolate thunder not Darryl Dawkin. God, I love that dude. Man, Oh,

Association Department of Redundancy Department Bree mro What my name?

Speaker 10 (02:17:40):
The mailman Carmel.

Speaker 2 (02:17:44):

hockey one to stump you guys?

Speaker 9 (02:17:58):
Oh my god, no, please, I'm just say Sidney Crosby

Speaker 2 (02:18:03):
All right, let's call it today. We'll call it today.

outstanding job? I think I just said that. I'm redundant tonight, Hey,
come it up, coming up, We've got quite a list
of first year nominees on the College Football Hall of

(02:18:24):

(02:18:47):

Brian Song and he was can't Lando Calasian and the

(02:19:09):
Star Wars franchise. I think it was in Bengal Long's
All Stars still looks good at eighty seven, still goes
by the name Billy. This tweeter tweeted at me and said,
ask him if it's okay if Billy D. Williams goes
by the name Billy or if he's too old your.

Speaker 7 (02:19:29):
Thoughts see, but he goes by Billy D. To me,
that's Billy D.

Speaker 4 (02:19:35):
I don't know. It's a little different.

Speaker 2 (02:19:36):
To me.

Speaker 4 (02:19:38):
I just think it's certain to think.

Speaker 2 (02:19:39):
About fair enough. Well, listen, we like thinkers on this show.
We do. I told you, man, I'm no high school
drop out. I went to the full six years. I'm
a thinker. All right, good stuff, good answer.

Speaker 7 (02:19:50):
Good And the other thing about Billy D. Sorry, I
don't need to cut you off, Bernie. But the other
think about Billy D' his name is William Williams.

Speaker 4 (02:19:58):
So that's a tough one right there.

Speaker 7 (02:19:59):
I don't know Mom and Dad were thinking, but he's
got to go with Billy just a differentiate from first
and last name.

Speaker 2 (02:20:05):
How about is our guy? Mark Ramsey just reminded me
former Chicago cub Billy Williams.

Speaker 4 (02:20:15):
I guess there's more of them out there than you'd expect, right.

Speaker 2 (02:20:18):
Right, What we'll do is next time we work together,
we just can do the whole damn four hours on
Billy's Billy like Billy Martin and right, all right, maybe
not all right. The Hall of Fame list the first
year nominated the twenty five College Football Hall of Fame ballot.
Seventy seven players and nine coaches, including Nick Saban and

(02:20:40):
Urban Meyer. They're up for election. A lot of really
interesting names. Mark Ingram from Alabama. Just saw him on
radio row at the Super Bowl. Look great, Love that dude. Man.
I'll never forget his his his Heisman speech back in
December twenty nine. It was actually very very moving. Also,

(02:21:03):
Michael Vick is on the list, Marvin Harrison, the late
Sean Taylor who played at Miami, and one name and
I might have something for you at the end of
the show. He's back in the news. Maybe you might
see him more. Twenty twenty twelve Heisman Trophy runner up
Manti Tayo He's also on the list as well. Speaking

(02:21:25):
a football, we're gonna get to the other kind of
international football coming up, but first let's go back to
our guy. Martin Weiss with the latest.

Speaker 7 (02:21:33):

(02:22:58):
against Columbia.

Speaker 4 (02:23:00):
Bernie back to you, all.

Speaker 2 (02:23:01):
Right, Martin, good stuff, Bud, all right, Uh this week
I checked that this time every week we listen. It
doesn't matter if it's on field, off field, in season,
out of season. And of course we are just weeks
away from the Paris Olympics. That was just in Paris
fifteen days ago and they're ready for it. Man saw

(02:23:22):
the stadium where the soccer games are going to be played.
So we will have updates for you, as we've had
for the past two Ward Cups, and even when we're
not in season. That's why each week at this time
we bring you Chris Burffett's World of Soccer.

Speaker 13 (02:23:36):
The greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drum him.
It's all here in this report from the World of Soccer, Bernie.

Speaker 14 (02:24:00):
This weekend's World of Soccer, we are taking a trip
to America to talk about football, and I mean American football.
There has been a story that actually involves soccer in
the NFL these past few days, and it comes to
us thanks to some very poor choice of words from
Josh Jacobs of the Green Bay Packers and unfortunately a

(02:24:24):
lot of news aggregators that have just decided to run
with completely false truths, false information, and has really brought
some real confusion.

Speaker 4 (02:24:35):
To the world.

Speaker 14 (02:24:36):
You may have heard that the Philadelphia Eagles and the
Green Bay Packers are going to be playing a game
this year in salth Paulo, Brazil. And you may have
also heard that fans are being encouraged not to wear
their green jerseys. The Eagles wear green, the Packers wear greens,
and players won't be able to wear green because of
some sort.

Speaker 4 (02:24:56):
Of gangs in sal Paulo.

Speaker 14 (02:24:58):
This is one hund ThReD percent and false and the
truth is soccer related. Let's step back and try to
explain where this all began. Josh Jacobs it was on
The Green Light with Chris Long podcast and made these
remarks where he said, quote, you know, they said that
the part of Brazil we're going to, you can't wear
green at They said it's something to do with gangs

(02:25:19):
and stuff. Is It led to aj Brown in the
Philadelphia Eagles then going on x formerly known as Twitter
and saying the million dollar question is if we can't
go anywhere wear a certain color, why are we going.
This is where Coper prompted backlash from the NFL, and
Jacobs has since apologized for these comments, but not before
a bunch of news sites and aggregators out there on

(02:25:40):
this information jumped all over it and spread the rumor
far and wide, and now many many people out there
believe that gangs will shoot you in sal Polo if
you wear green, or in a more team version of this,
that both the Eagles and the Packers both teams that
wear green. The Eagles of the home team, that somehow
they are being told by Brazilians not to wear green,

(02:26:01):
that they have to wear other jureys of the game.

Speaker 4 (02:26:03):
That's not true.

Speaker 14 (02:26:04):
This is a soccer story, and let me try to
explain it's not even that serious. To begin with, Let's
talk about the club in the stadium where the Eagles
and Packers will be playing. Sport Club Corinthians Polista, better
simply known now as Corinthians, was founded in nineteen ten
by railway workers. It is today one of the most
successful clubs in Brazil with seven national titles, three Copa

(02:26:28):
de Brazil trophies, and it is one of the most
supported clubs in the world, with over.

Speaker 1 (02:26:34):
Thirty million fans.

Speaker 14 (02:26:36):
The stadium, Arena Corinthians, is known by the sponsorship for reasons.
Neo Quimicus Stadium was made in twenty fourteen for the
FIFA World Cup, hosted six matches, including the opening.

Speaker 4 (02:26:47):
Match of that World Cup.

Speaker 14 (02:26:49):
It is a very fun it is a very modernized
place to watch a soccer game. Now this gets into
why the Green, why the greencris It is because Corinthians,
a very decorated club, has a crosstown rival by the
name of Palmeras. It is part of the Derby Paulista
sometimes simply just the derby in that country, because they

(02:27:10):
know which derby you are talking about. A very heated,
very passionate rivalry. Paul Marris is a club whose primary
colors are green and white their home colors. They wear
a green jersey, white pants, and for their way it's
the opposite white shirt, green pants. It's always green with them.

(02:27:30):
Because of this, Corinthians and their fans have a informal
band on the color green. Fans avoid wearing the color
green to their games. In fact, there has been an
incident in the past where a Corinthians player was wearing
green cleats as part while playing on a game and
the club find him for wearing green on his kit.

(02:27:55):
It is a tradition, much like how Ohio State fans
decide on the week of the rivalry against Michigan to
just use an X in the place of any M
in any kind of text they send out, crossout M,
avoid the letter M that entire week. But it's just
that it is a tradition, is a tradition that Corinthians follow.

(02:28:15):
Would some fans prefer them not to wear green in
their stadiums for the Eagles and Packers, Yes, I am sure. However,
the club has not told the NFL that neither of
these teams can wear green. The Philadelphia Eagles right now
haven't decided if they will wear green or if they
will wear black, and to be honest, it's not even
the first time green's been acceptable in Arena Corinthians. To

(02:28:36):
begin with, as I said, this was a World Cup venue,
which meant that many Brazilians were wearing the green Brazilian
national team jerseys to the stadium. Green means many things
to the Corinthian fan base about Paul Marris, but what
it is not is a gang color. While soccer fans
may be passionate, while may be very very very passionate,

(02:28:59):
they will not attack you just because they see the
color green. This has several implications and it drives me
insane for a few reasons. It presumes a lot of
these fans, or a lot of Brazilians to be unthinking
animals that somehow, if they see the wrong color, much
like a raging bowl, that they will simply charge at it.

Speaker 1 (02:29:18):
That is not the case.

Speaker 14 (02:29:19):
It presumes like that Salpolo is dangerous, and to be clear,
to be clear, there is crime in Salpoulo. There is
crime everywhere in the world. And for millionaire athletes, yes,
you probably will have to go with extra security precautions
because that is just the state of the world sometimes,
but this episode has unfortunately spread fear. It is not

(02:29:41):
spread doubt where it comes to these the idea of
the NFL playing a game in Brazil. Sal Polo's mayor
has come out and decried it, saying that Salpolo is
a vast metropolis, one of the largest in the world,
like many other cities that face is social inequality and crime.
But telling players not to wear green is unnecessary and
the gang references reinforce stereotypes that only escalates prejudice. And

(02:30:06):
you know what, I fully agree with him and Bernie. Honestly,
I feel a little crazy because I feel like this
was a story I was aware of. When the NFL
schedule came out, it was pointed out by several fans
on Twitter that there was this thing with Corinthians where
they didn't like the color of green. I was not
expecting it to pop up again like this over a
month later. This is part of what the NFL wants

(02:30:27):
to do. If it wants to spread it's joy of
its sports the world, then sometimes you have to start
seeing the rest of the world as human as well,
not as dangerous areas to simply walk around.

Speaker 1 (02:30:38):
Maybe the NFL.

Speaker 14 (02:30:38):
Could have chosen a better area or better teams that
don't have this green element to it. But to be honest,
it should not be a problem and it will not
be a problem. And Bernie, I know you, like me,
have a background in formal journalism and one of the
things that tears me up about this is a lot
of these aggregators on Twitter who take this information and

(02:30:59):
they have off feued no apologies, no retractions, not even corrections.
That bad information is still out there right now to
this day, and it taints and colors this game, and
it taints in colors Salpolo and Corinthians Football Club in
ways that are just completely unfair. If you wish to
be true to the spirit of Corinthians, don't wear green.

(02:31:20):
But if you are there to support either the Eagles
or the Packers, there's probably going to be an exception
made for you. Because all this is, at the end
of the day, is a tradition held by a sports
club here too, by their fans and their player and
their organization. It is not a band placed on anyone else,
but it is a soccer tradition and it is a

(02:31:41):
fun tradition like no other out there because it is
fun to see these things in the world, and it
is fun to see them in the world of soccer.
We'll see you next time, Bernie. Copa America is coming.
Euro Championship is coming. This is a great time of
year to dive into the sport.

Speaker 2 (02:31:56):
That is what you call setting the record straight. And
I've fact check everything Chris said. He's accurate, he's spot on,
a very good reportage. And perhaps this is one of
those rare times where the NFL didn't think this through
that you send two teams that were green. The Eagles
were the home team who can't wear white while the

(02:32:19):
Packers wear green. The Eagles want to wear black shirt
instead of a white the Packers have to wear white.
You get the point. You got two teams and their
team colors are green. All right, I'm out for that.
Coming up, we wrap up the show. I mentioned Mantaitos
name a minute ago. You might be seeing him again
on TV. I'll explain. Coming up, I'm Bernie Fraddle. We're

(02:32:42):
coming to your life from Well I's say it's Fox
Sports Radio, TIREC dot Com Studios. Keep it locked. You're
listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
All right, we are wrapping it up on The Bernie
Frattle Show. And before I go any further, I want
to thank my broadcast team back in Los Angeles, been
with me since eleven pm Pacific time on Saturday night.

(02:33:05):
It would be Mark Ramsey, our technical producer, turning all
the dials, keeping us schooled together. Martin Weis's hardest working
man in rock and roll on the updates tonight. And
Briamuro outstanding eclectic Briamuro stepping up joining the Bernie Fraddle Show.
Great job by everybody. Cannot do the job without the

(02:33:26):
teamwork and the camaraderie. Appreciate everybody's efforts. Earlier I mentioned
that the twenty twenty five College Football Hall of Fame
class nominees were announced, seventy seven players, nine coaches. Among
the players was a guy by the name of Manti Teo.
I am sure you remember the name Manti Tayo. Yes,

(02:33:46):
he last played in the NFL four years ago, but
you may see him back on your TVs soon. According
to Andrew Marshawn of The Athletic you Know, the NFL
Network show Good Morning Football has been off the air
since March because they're moving from New York to Los Angeles.

(02:34:10):
Jason mccordy, former New England Patriot, who was one of
the co hosts on the show, is not going to
be making the move to Los Angeles, and so now
NFL Media is having the task to field mccordy spot. So,
according to Marshawn, the NFL network is considering some former
players and Manti Tayo is one of them as a

(02:34:33):
potential replacement. And apparently Manti Tato really impressed recently during
this boot camp that was put on by NFL Media. Now, look,
Manti Tayo was a very high profile name at Notre
Dame and he should be very familiar to football fans
played for the Chargers. He not only was a massive
recruit coming out of high school and again he was

(02:34:54):
a Heisman Trophy candidate at Notre Dame and he was
at first run draft choice National Football League. But as
you recall, Manti Tale received a lot of widespread attention
for his girlfriend Hoak's story that made national news about
eleven years ago. It was a cat fishing story. It
received more attention in twenty twenty two after Netflix released

(02:35:18):
a documentary about the matter. And if you're into a
journalistic documentaries. It was one of the most well done,
incredibly compelling, and once you hear his side of the story,
it really changes the dynamic. And what it did was
enabled Manti Tale to go back into the spotlight in
a favorable light. And I think it removed some of

(02:35:39):
the stigma as the story was aggregated over and over
and made him look worse, but it really wasn't the case.
So good luck to Manti Tao. I think he checks
a lot of boxes, and my gut feels he'd probably
do really well in that role. And hey, it's almost
a promise, folks. I mean, we're fifty three days away
for the first you know, I think the Hall of

(02:36:02):
Fame game. Fifty three days would be the first exhibition game.
But we're finishing up OTA's We're going to be in
camp here in mid July, and it'll be upon us
before I sign off tonight, though, I want to reiterate
because I've made some bold statements about Danny Hurley and
I want to double down and we'll see if there's
news by next Friday. I'll be back on these airwaves

(02:36:22):
next Friday night, of course, eleven pm Pacific to two am,
same type of show. Of course, we have the midnight
hour at midnight Pacific time where we take your calls.
We have several topics, and one of the topics was
should Danny Hurley take the job, And by about ninety percent,
people voted no, that he really shouldn't. Look I mentioned

(02:36:43):
it earlier, Chuck Dailey said, coaching in the NBA is
like managing an adult daycare center. You know, you teach
in college, you manage in the NBA. And Bobby Hurley
or Danny Hurley might be an exquisite teacher on the
college level. I'm not so sure his act translates to
the pro I don't know, it might not. He's already
a Yukon legend. You can't improve unhappy. His wife, Andrea,

(02:37:05):
is a Jersey girl. They've only lived in the Northeast.
Moving to LA would be an entirely different planet. The
Lakers are a circus. They've had seven coaches since Phil
Jackson left, and they've had four. This would be the
Lebron's fourth. But I haven't even mentioned the Bronnie James
aspect to this. I like Bronni James. I don't know
that he's an NBA player, so you're gonna have to

(02:37:27):
manage through all that Michieg gos while trying to put
a winner on the floor. And I don't care what
anybody says. The Lakers are championship or bust. That's what
they want. That's the Lakers standard. Even if you win
a championship, but you're not going to be with that roster.
Lebron's gonna get all the credit, and if you lose,
you're gonna get the you know, I think Darvinham got
screwed so and I also gave a lot of receipts

(02:37:50):
about some very good college coaches from Lon Krueger to
Billy Donovan to John b Liine who got to the
NBA and you know they weren't able to win. There's
only one coach in history that did it. That's Larry Brown.
So look, I'm of the opinion that when push comes
to shove, Danny Hurley will stay in stores Connecticut. Not
to say he might challenge. He might, he might dip

(02:38:11):
his toe in the NBA waters at some point in
his career, but for now, I think he stays in
stores Connecticut. And it goes for the three peet We'll see,
I'll eat my words. If I'm wrong, we'll know, we'd
probably know by this time next week, and we'll certainly
report on it. It's gonna do it for the Bernie
Fratter Show. See you next Friday, eleven pm. Keep it
locked up Next the Great Andy Furman on Fox Sports
