(00:25):
The way how you're buying should be absolute jam packed
show tonight, coming to you from Las Vegas where these
last fourteen days. I don't want to say it was
hot today, but I saw a thief stealing hubcaps and
he was wearing oven mits. Yeah, here all week to
(00:45):
show Saturday. Look, it's been hoping, you know that. You
know what people ask me, how do you deal with it?
You know, I put on a jack and go about
my business. But that's a story for a different day.
A lot of stuff to get to tonight. Our good friend,
the legend good buddy of mine, Oh crack Man, joined
us in about fifteen minutes. We'll take you inside the
four walls of Vegas. Tit what's going on? Lots of
(01:06):
things in the news, names in the news, Charles Barkley,
Paul Skeins, who got NFL updates the WNBA for all
of their chest beating, they're bleeding money. This is a
real story and we'll get to it later in the show.
And of course two am Pacific, five AM Easter and
the Dance Sensation sweep in the nation. What kind of
brand new fool are you? Followed by what my name?
(01:31):
But we begin with the NBA Finals, which you know,
there's like been four games played in seventeen days. I
think since May twenty eighth is at seventeen. My math's
not great. Days eighteen nineteen days, okay, fair enough, But
I gave the NBA Finals short shrift Friday night because
this doesn't have any drama. This doesn't have any oomph,
(01:54):
it doesn't have any curb appeal. And as far as
the game on you know Friday night, we whoa, we
might have a series. No, please don't start with that. Please,
we've got bupkis. We don't have a series. Should the
MAVs win in Boston? Should and they're seven point underdogs,
(02:15):
although some MAVs money's come in.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
You're six and a half in some spots, and you
head back to Dallas.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
I think the game would be played Tuesday for a
theoretical potential Game six, and Dallas wins that game, and
then you head back to Boston for Game seven. Maybe
we'll have a conversation as to whether or not there
would be high drama basketball in TD Garden in Game seven,
but we're a million miles away from that. It's not
(02:44):
worth talking about. I don't feel like that's in the cards.
And you know, at the same time, I shouldn't be
giving the series as much short shrift as I gave
it on Friday night. I give the mask credit, but
that win was a dud by Boston, and I think
(03:05):
you could clearly see in their eyes. And I know
it's against a lot of practice psychology with a lot
of license, but I do it all the time. Perhaps
I'll have my come up on some day. Perhaps I'll
be going to Hell on a scholarship. But it was
an embarrassing effort for the Celtics. The MAVs scored twenty
two points in the paint in the first quarter. Only
hold that thought because I'll come to the one coaching
(03:25):
point about this series on a go forward basis coming up.
So give the mass some credit, but I think it
was a Boston dud each way, anyway you slice it.
I think what happens Monday night the Celtics they take
a deep breath, they regroup, they'll move the ball better
on offense with purpose. They'll go back to that coming
(03:46):
at you in waves, swarming defense where they communicate, switch, help,
contest just about everything. They're athletic. They don't need to
double Luca. The MAVs played desperate Friday. They played with
much greater effort, and so we even Luca played some defense.
But just remember in the first three games, when the
intensity was a little bit different, Boston drove to the
(04:10):
hole anytime they wanted. Now, the MAVs typing up in
Game four, that might have been a little that might
have kept Boston off guard just a little bit. Maybe
sort of kind of, but I think that game. Game
four was a fugazy okay, losing by thirty eight points, really,
but there were some legit takeaways. One of them has
to be this, and that is Frankly, if you look
(04:32):
at the numbers, the loss of Christaps Porsingis in games
three and four was huge. For the second straight game,
the MAVs actually had their way in the paint.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
They outscored Boston.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Sixty to twenty six in the paint, and Boston came
out of the gate, got off the bus, god all
over their first ten points with their baskets coming in
the paint courtesy of Luka, Doncicch and Kyrie Irving. Dallas
has really needed Kyrie and Luca to be able to
score one on one and without the big man on
the floor. That's you know, porsingis for the Celtics. Well,
(05:08):
the Dallas dual as it were, they've they've been more effective. Uh,
they couldn't hit a three to save their lives, but
they were twenty one of thirty inside the arc. Now,
they told us that Porzingis was technically available for Game four,
but then end of the game. I'm guessing you're gonna
see him on the floor in game five. That's just
my thoughts. So what does Boston have to do to
(05:32):
put this away in Game five?
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Well, shoot the ball better.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
I know that sounds simplistic, but that's really basically basically
what it is. When you take as many three pointers
as the Celtics do, they live and die by the three.
Sometimes they die by it too. But when the Boston
Celtics are making their threes, that also creates space to
drive and post up. But when they're not, that space
closes up. It gets harder to get into the system.
Believe it or not, Boston, the Celtics do have a
(05:59):
pretty sophisticated offensive system that ranked as the best in
NBA history during the regular season, and Kristaps was supposed
to be the antidote into the games at which Boston
didn't shoot well, and he was because he has this
unique skill set that really creates matchup advantages every time
he's on the court.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
He missed the other game because.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Of the injury, and we'll see what his availability is
for the rest of the series. But I would be
very surprised if Kristaps Porsingis is not on the floor
Monday night. Now, all I think that has to happen
really is to end the series Sunday night or Monday,
and excuse me, Boston just has to show up. And
(06:39):
I am not convinced to the least that the ghosts
that haunt Kyrie Irving in Boston, he doesn't solve those
anytime soon. All Right, he hadn't beaten his former team.
I think in ten or eleven tries has not won
a game in Boston, any game that Kyrie has played
in Boston since the twenty one playoff series when he
(07:01):
was with the Brooklyn Nets. So buying what I believe
would be a really significant upset, a very significant road upset,
which would then bring the series back to Boston. I
think I think Boston is gonna is gonna ride Dallas
(07:21):
like a stick horse on Monday Night.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
That's just my It's an opinion, all right.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Even if they don't, and I'm equivocating here to work
with me, I still think the conversation about we really
got a series is not it's not pertinent because look
it all around it all, it all revolves around the
ifs this and then that conversation scenario, and I fifths
(07:46):
and butts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a
merry Christmas. You got to get to a game seven
for there to be a real conversation. That means Dallas
has to win two more games in a row. After winning,
they will have to win three in a row. No
one's ever come back, because you've heard of a thousand
times now from a three to zero deficit in the NBA.
In the NBA Finals, I think all the times there
(08:08):
have been three zero deficits, there's only been two or
three where somebody even forced a fourth game. I checked
out a seventh game. So there is my non gratuitous
look at the NBA Finals, and we shall see what
we shall see. Can Luca play defense again? His defense
actually was was pretty good in Game four, but again
(08:28):
it was against the Boston team that looked like they're
on a walk about Jason Tatum. He was aggressively trying
to get to the rim, but he did nothing to
quiet his critics. He scored fifteen points on four to
ten shooting. He also had issues guarding Daniel Gafford the post.
He tried, but there was a seismicch mismatch there and
that was exposed somewhat. The only other thing, too, is
(08:50):
the MAVs really killed the Celtics in the hustle stats
because they wanted it more, they played harder, they played desperate.
So uh, and I want I should he have some
props to Derek Lively. He was all over the offensive class.
He had seven rebounds to go along with his eleven points.
But again the impression I can't get out of my
mind is the fact that Boston just looked flat and
(09:12):
they look like they were maybe disinterested isn't the word,
but they did not like to look like the Celtics
team that really sort of ran rough shot through the
regular season and ran rough shot through the playoffs. So
we shall see Sunday night, Monday night. I keep saying
that they space these playoffs out. We shall see Monday
(09:33):
night how Boston responds to what happened to them in
Dallas on Friday night. And you know, if Dallas were
to go in and steal that game, then perhaps the
notion that Boston just mailed it in, maybe that's fortune
cookie wisdom.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
But we're we're going to find out.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
And I know I'm sort of dragging this out because
the truth of the matter is that's really the narrative
around the NBA Playoffs and the NBA Finals. They're just
dragging it out. And I would be shocked, beyond shocked
if we're not crowning the Celtics. With our nineteenth championship
coming up, we bring you back out to Vegas. The
legend Bill Krackman, professional vetter, all around great guy, international legend.
(10:17):

We're back in the Bernie Frauder Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Come to your life from me tyre act dot Com
studios here in Las Vegas take you up to three
and Pacific six am Eastern, just getting started us. Welcome
and a gentleman, a fan favorite, a legend everywhere he goes.
Those probably call him a good friend of mine. The
great Bill Krakenberger, the crack Man, Crack how you doing,
Buddy Me on Buddy always a pleasure. And by the way,
(12:12):
you know, I think it was Russell Buffalino who said,
if you want to make money a casino in a
casino own one that hasn't stopped a lot of people.
Have you ever seen a hot Vegas summer this crowded?
Am I imagining things?
Speaker 6 (12:24):
Listen, I've lived here over twenty years now, and this
is the time of the year where normally get things
kind of quiet down when the summer season starts. I
could just tell you one thing. We're about ten degrees
above normal every day, one hundred and ten hundred and
eleven hundred and twelve. The town is packed, cannot move
(12:45):
literally weekdays. Tuesday, Wednesday, I was out this week. I
went and seen Love Over at the Mirage and they're
closing down on one. Yeah, I love that time the
people show. So I went there to see that. I've
seen to Steer one night and some friends in town.
Both shows sold out, can't move, casinos are packed, everyone
has money. We're in this adult fantasy world, and it
(13:07):
just might be a fantasy world because you know, if
you go buy what everyone's saying, there's going to be
a big crash the economy and this isn't that well.
I don't know, the stock markets at an all time high,
you know, the big cooin and all these people, whether
they all have money with that. I'm not smart enough
of that stuff. But there's there's money everywhere in this town.
World Series of Pokers going on, a lot of European
(13:29):
money in town. Every tournament you know, being sold out,
and people you know flock into the town to play poker,
and and the rake is at an all time high,
never been never charged the percentages. I think old old
man Vinion would be, you know, all around in his
grave if he's seen these guys. You know, went from
(13:49):
seven eight percent rake to up to like twenty percent
rake on some of these tournaments, eighteen percent rake. But
people don't care. They if you go that, they will come.
People just defended. They when they think everyone thinks they
have visions of grandeur. They're going to be the next
World Series of Proper champion. Throw them running around like crazy.
I've never seen anything like it. The town's absolutely out
of control.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Benny Benyon reference. That's why we love having the crack
Man on. And you know, you bring up a really
good point about the rake and the fact that a
casino truly has a number of built in advantages to
ensure they're always going to win in the end. And obviously,
you know that here in Vegas to be the house edge.
Explain to the folks out there at crack what the
(14:33):
house edge means and why really, when you step into
a casino the odds plum intended are really against you.
Speaker 6 (14:42):
That's funny because when everyone talks about house edge, and
we didn't I didn't know what subject matter we're going
to be on this show. Of course we're just spontaneous.
But this is a great question you bring up. And
you know when everyone thinks house edge, you say, what's
the house edge of the game, Well, a house edge
on a skill game like blackjack, or you know, a
game where you make decisions video poker, not on just
(15:04):
mindless games where you push a button and three reels
come up with a random number generator. Those games are
set at like let's say, I'll say a blackjack game.
They say, oh, it's you know, we only hold one
percent on blackjack and our games. Well that if someone
actually plays the game to that one percent. Of course
we all know that, you know, you have a fifteen
(15:25):
versus ten, you hit the fifteen, but there's some people
that don't know that, especially new to gambling. So that
makes that one percent game up to two percent, maybe
even higher. So the household actually is set on these
games depending on what the level of the game is,
the denomination of the game. I'm going to go by
the penny slot machines. As a matter of fact, people
(15:45):
don't realize that's the number number one money maker out
there is the penny slot machines, which are the one
cent reels, which you could, by the way, you could
play up to you know, seven hundred and fifty, you know,
or even more, you can play ten dollars to spend
even though it's a henny. So these games are holding
literally fifteen percent compared to a dollar or a five
(16:06):
dollars machine, which is holding you know, five percent, much
much much less long term hold. But even I'll even
go over to the sports angle. You know, when people
come to town now, they're like, oh my god, football season.
You know, preseason starts in six weeks, so eight weeks.
Oh my god, I got to bet my favorite team.
I got a bet the Bears to win the Super Bowl,
(16:28):
or or bet that the Jets to win the Super Bowl.
You know, they just to have a root for the
whole year. Well, that type of bet has about a
twenty five to fifty that's right, fifty percent. Hold, there's
probably nothing in the casino in craw crack not.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
To jump in.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
But explain to the folks, obviously, you and I go back.
I mean, we been coming here for crying out out
since Sinatra was alive. Expanding to the folks were to
hold means and what a rake means. So they understand
because it's giving people to a master class, so they
don't lose the But what you're going to anyway.
Speaker 6 (16:59):
No, you're you're right. Sometimes I just think everyone knows
what that means. And of course there's a lot of
new people to gambling and stuff and people that are
even listening. So yeah, that's the percentage that the house
takes away out of the pool. In other words, for
every dollar that comes in across the counter, they're going
to give you back to seventy five dollars, they're going
(17:20):
to take twenty five percent or two dollars in or
I'm sorry, or a quarter of that dollar, one little quarter,
So let's put it. Let's put a simpler term. For
one hundred dollars, they're going to take twenty five dollars
for the house, they're going to return seventy five dollars
to the pool of everyone who bets whatever, wherever the
event may be. So that's called the house rake. But yet,
(17:42):
if you just bet a straight bet on a sports
game team versus team, laying a dollar ten, it's about
four and a half percent compared to a future, which
can be up to ten times worse. I don't ever
recommend futures for any people that you know that that
that iver yeah, because the household on them is. But
(18:02):
now listen, if you're a casual gambler, you come to
town and you're gonna bet five or ten grocery dollars
and you want to have a root for the whole season,
I have no problem with you're doing that, have some fun,
you have a bet for the whole season, the roof
for But if you bet anything serious, if you're a
serious better you're betting every week. You know, there's this
thing called sports betting now that's accepted nationwide and thirty
(18:24):
some states, almost forty states. So if you're betting every
single week, you just stick to laying a dollar ten
on both sides, you know, betting side verse side or
peer verse peer, rather than betting a future, Rather than
betting into these high hold pools which are only one
way pools. And what I know that is when you
(18:44):
could bet something and not bet to know, you can
guarantee you're probably getting robbed on the price for layman's terms.
In other words, even the golf event today you can bet,
like right now, I see at Circa here that they
have you can bet either way, will d shamb win
the tournament? Yes and no, both sides, so you know,
you get a little bit of a more of a
fair shake than just spending the yes side than you
(19:07):
where you know it's being I don't want to say
you're you're getting shaken down, because you're not getting shaken down,
but you're you're you're paying a large vigorous or a
large tax to be able to bet bet.
Speaker 7 (19:18):
That's rights.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
And of course the vigorous is the fee that you
pay the sports book that for the right to book
your bet. So you want to win one hundred to
actually put U one hundred and ten or a hundred
and fifty whatever crack you mentioned. Futures in the NFL
win totals came out and my got we're like forty
five days away from the Hall of Fame game. Can
you imagine what the handle is going to be like
(19:42):
in the NFL this year? It just gets crazier and crazier.
But there's one other thing I want you to talk
about with folks, because I've always over the belief cracked
that people think they want to win. But I've studied
this for a long time. They get high making the bet,
not winning the bet, and so therefore they'll sit at
a table longer because they're entertained and their fee their
uh you know, competitive urges, et cetera, uh, and enhancing
(20:05):
their participation by having money on it. But the longer
you play and longer you sit, the greater the odds
is that the house is going to take your money.
Talk to people about having a little bit of discipline
instead of coming to town trying to win, you know,
bet a little to make a lot better, a little
to make a little more your thoughts.
Speaker 6 (20:23):
Yeah, that's a very good point. People, do you they
come to the town, like I said, with Divisions of Grandeur,
they're going to make a big score. You know, even
when you go walk up to a craft table, you
know you could bet a game, you could better a
side on the pass line, with odds. That's the one
percent one and a half percent game. Or you could
bet the eleven and the twelve and the aces and
(20:43):
hard ways and give them ten percent up to fifteen
you know percent juice on these bets. So you're really
I mean, if you're looking to do that, your chances
are you're going to give your money away and leave
it behind. But like Bernie said, if you want to
make a little bit of money, you want to make
a little bit maybe trying to make produce a little
school or but grind it out. Yeah, you can bet
that low hold. I know it's not fun. I know
(21:06):
it's not you know, unless you got on a hot
roll or whatever it may be. It's always fun to
get a fifteen to one shot or a thirty to
one shot. But that's the Those thirty to one shots
are supposed to pay thirty six to one. That's the
house edge. Whereas a straight bet you know are going
you can relate it to baseball, you've really rerelated to
the craft table. If you're related to a hand of blackjack,
(21:27):
it's only a one percent edge and it but but
you're gonna get You're gonna get your return on the investment.
It's gonna be about one to one rather than getting
fifteen or thirty to one. And uh, but the casinos
want you to bet those thirty to one shots. They
want you to bet those fifteen to one shots because
they make a lot more money on them. And they
know if you do hit one, you're gonna you're gonna
give everyone to give back pre advertising too for everyone
(21:50):
screaming and yelling that you hit a thirty to one shot. People.
So what's all that noise over there? I got to
try that. So, uh, there's a lot of little things
going on.
Speaker 8 (21:58):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (21:58):
And I always look at those second everything's going on
in the casino rather than just look at the wind,
I always look at the ways that that things go
down in the casino. So I just try to when
I go into the casino, I looked so much. I
looked so differently at it, Bernie. I look at it
as hey, what can I do here? How can I
try to get over get the lowest house edge, or
(22:20):
you know, trying to make it with bonuses, or I
walk around and look at the different kind of big
payouts and progressives which could be positive play for the player.
But I understand people want to come to town. You
want to end this gambling everywhere? Every state has almost
almost every state of casinos. Now I understand the thrill
of it, but I also understand, like the old ABC
Wild World of Sports, the agony of defeat. So just
(22:42):
be careful, you're.
Speaker 2 (22:44):
Going down the hill. Hey, before I let you on,
just ever so quickly, and then we're way overdue for lunch. Hey,
say hi to your buddy Fats, the guy you introduced
me to over Don de Marco's that day. He's been
following the show a lot in tweeting. I like that guys,
good dude, and hopefully I'll get together again.
Speaker 6 (23:00):
You have to remind me which guy was that I
was there?
Speaker 2 (23:03):
Well, he goes by Fats on Twitter. I wish I
could remember his name in the New Jersey guy. I
think he's uh anyway.
Speaker 6 (23:09):
I should Fats on Twitter. No, No, he's a really
good guy. Yeah, yes, he's on Twitter. It's Fat. You right,
you're absolute. There's a couple of different Fats. It's amazing.
Most of the Fats I know are all Jim rats
and they're healthy guys. He's one of them.
Speaker 9 (23:25):
He is.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
Oh yeah, yeah, let's not imply he's fat, he's uh,
he gets after it, Yeah, he gets.
Speaker 6 (23:31):
No good guys. And then that you're talking about one
of the old school restaurants here in town, even though
it hasn't been here so long.
Speaker 3 (23:38):
But al and Allan Mike Scalli at Great Guys.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
Las Vegas Legends, You and I and Jim Fist another
name of name dropping right and left with fights for
a godfathers in the industry. Crack always appreciate you coming on, Bud,
and I've been traveling a lot so of you. Let's
connect here the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 6 (23:54):
Absolutely preseason football around the corner.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
We'll talk and well, by the way, one last thing,
crack Yep, you're still there.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
Hey, listen, you become a fixture on this network. Won't
be long. Now tell the folks where they can find you.
On Sunday morning.
Speaker 6 (24:06):
Oh yeah, we're gonna have a countdown. The kickoff will
be starting in August. And preseason football has been this God,
it's been stupid the last couple of seasons. I mean
literally last year. I think we went seventeen and five
on my releases on my plays last year. It's all
about information, it's all about having the beat reporters and stuff.
(24:28):
It's all about knowing what the coaches are going to do.
Do they want to win? Do they not want to win?
So we're gonna have all that countdown the kickoff with myself,
Jeff Schwartz and Brian. I'll look forward to it.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
Crack enjoy the rest of the evening, big fellow, We'll
talk soon, Thank you, sir. All Right?
Speaker 2 (24:42):
Is Bill Krackenberger, the crack Man, the legend. You know him,
you love him. He's truly a fixed ure, owns the
room anywhere he goes. Just a great guy. And you
hear him Sunday Mornings. Third season, that show is really
blown up on Sunday Mornings, as has the Saturday show
coming up. Former basketball player announced his retirement from his
(25:04):
second job. We'll explain coming out, but first let's go
to a guy, the chef. The chef, Now, the chef.
You were just in Vegas. I was gonna buy you
a beer.
Speaker 10 (25:11):
Man, what I overestimated the free time I had. I
was actually with my family on the one basically the
entire Yes, I was one hundred and ten degrees and yeah,
I was sitting in a beach chair ankled or neck
deep in water. Good, well, good for you with a
beer in my hand. But I legitimately did want to
come see you. I just you know, it just the
(25:32):
time it's got by me.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
If you enjoyed your time, it's all that matters.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
And uh, you know, you come to one hundred and
ten degree, whether you just put on your jacket, go
about your business right exactly.
Speaker 10 (25:41):
And yeah, those craps tables though. I went to Sunset
Station and oh yeah that was it was. It was
a rough time.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
I live about eight minutes.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
Well no Sunset station over on Sunset Yeah, yeah, yeah,
lots of good eateries in there.
Speaker 3 (25:54):
All right, what we got tonight?
Speaker 10 (25:55):
Anyway, they did just go final in Omaha. There was
a lengthy rain. Delight to be again the Florida Texas
A and M opening round A game. The Aggies do
eventually win it, though, three to two. To win that
first round matchup Kentucky with a game winning home run
with two outs in the tenth inning, as they were
able to beat NC State five to four. In the
(26:18):
Stanley Cup Final, Edmonton a blowout win against the Florida
Gators eight to one or Florida Panthers, excuse me eight
to one. As the Panthers lead the Stanley Cup Final
three to one, they force a game five in Florida.
On Tuesday, Conor McDavid his first career Stanley Cup goal
as he had a four point performance three assist to
(26:39):
goal along with that goal. Dylan Holloway with two goals
and an assist. Zach Hyman also with a couple of assists.
US Open Golf bryceon Desshambo currently in the lead by
three strokes. He shot a third round sixty seven, so
right now for the tournament he is seven under par
(27:00):
Rory McRoy is tied for second place at four under.
American Patrick Cantley also for under parr. NFL news T
Higgins has now signed his franchise tax so he will
report to camp for Cincinnati next month. In soccer, it's
the Euro Soccer tournament. Well have Chris Perherfetza World of
Soccer coming up later tonight. But Spain scoring three times
(27:22):
in the first half, he won three nil. They won
three nil over Croatia. Switzerland beat Hungary three to one.
Italy over Albania to one despite allowing a goal in
the first thirty seconds. At Major League Baseball, concerning news,
for the Dodgers. Yoshinobo Yamamoto had to leave after two
innings tonight triceps tightness, so he had to leave the game.
(27:48):
As LA playing the Kansas City Royals, and they eventually
do lose to Kansas City seven to two. Elsewhere in
Major League Baseball, Clubs over the Cardinals five to one,
Blue Jay shout out the Guardians nothing, Angels over the
Giants four to three, Nationals beat the Marlins four nothing.
Orioles over the Phillies six to two, Brewers top the
Reds three to one. Tigers of the Ball went over
(28:09):
the Astros thirteen to five. The Mets beat the Padres
five to one, and the Braves over the Rays nine
to two. Red Sox Yankees. That big rivalry game, it's
Boston winning it eight four. Mariners beat the Rangers seven
to five, Rocky sixteen to four, Winners over the Pirates
and the White Sox. Or don't they beat the Diamondbacks
nine to two.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
Back to you, Bernie so A little triceps tightness for
Yama Modo, that's not good. I had a little triceps
tightness earlier in the night when I was crushing a
large pizza.
Speaker 3 (28:37):
That's his story. For a different day though.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
All right, I see, don Mark, you may have heard
of this guy's name is Charles Barkley, and there's only
one Charles Barkley. He's believe it or not. He's been
on the air for twenty four years. He started at
TNT for Crying out Loud back in two thousand. The
y two k tired as a player. Just prior to that,
(29:02):
he was a tremendous player in the NBA, tremendous two
way players, a tremendous player at Auburn I talked about
on Friday Night. He got cut by Bobby Knight in
the nineteen eighty four Olympic team. But he's gone on
to really move the needle in the broadcast world. He's
won four Sports Emmys. He is, you know, a great
guest whenever he appears on various shows. And he's unique
(29:26):
because Charles Barkley is one of the only people that
if he says something, he means it. He's known for
his blunt honesty. He's not afraid to call a player out.
If the player is playing poorly, he'll say he's playing badly.
If he doesn't like a coach's decision, he'll say he
doesn't like it. If he's bothered by social events or
current events, he'll speak out. He is he doesn't have
(29:48):
a he has a filter from the standpoint, he's polished
enough and he's an artful communicator, but he doesn't have
a filter in terms of if he wants to say something,
he says it. There have been a few times where
he's bluntless, has got him into a little bit of trouble.
But the show, along with Ernie Johnson and Kenny Smith
and Shaquille O'Neal, it's just like four guys sitting around
(30:11):
a bar and they've got chemistry and it's coming doing
it apparently one more year. So Charles Barkley dropped a
bomb the other day. Basically, it was very stunning. No
one expected to hear this coming. Right after Game four
of the NBA Finals on Friday, he said he plans
to retire from television after the twenty four to twenty
(30:32):
five season.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
There was no warning. He was a little.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
Emotional about it. He said he has talked about leaving
T and T for other networks. Due to Warner Brothers
and Discovery's going to lose the NBA rights after next year.
It appears that way, but it sounded to me a
little bit that maybe he's just kind of ready to
give up the microphone. And here's a quote from Charles.
Barkley says, there's been a lot of noise around our
(30:58):
network the last few months. I just want to say,
I talk to other networks, but I ain't going nowhere
other than T and T. But I have made the
decision myself no matter what happens, next year is going
to be my last on television. I just want to
say thank you to my NBA family. You guys have
been great to me. My heart is full of joy
(31:18):
and gratitude. Blah blah, blah blah, you know the usual.
Speaker 3 (31:20):
Okay. Then T and T issued a nice response, Charles
the Hall of Famer.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
You know, we love you. A mutual laborage inside. They
all that Michigan's okay. All good now, I'm sure they man,
and I'm not going to bore you with it. Barkley's
made no bones about the fact that he's been unhappy
with the entire process because TNT is on the verge
of losing its NBA package to NBC in theory. In theory,
T and T could still try to match NBC's big
(31:45):
or maybe negotiate a smaller deal with the league, but
there been indications from Warner Brothers that the network will
pursue cheaper deals in other sports such as college football,
maybe even tennis. Barkley doesn't like that, and that's his
right not to like that. But in only the inimitable
fashion that Charles Barkley can portray, he's describing as bosses
(32:09):
and the leaders of the company as Colt clowns and decrying,
you know what this is gonna mean for the Inside
the NBA show. He did have the right to opt
out of his deal with TNT should the network lose
its rights. He's gone as far as suggesting his production
company he can't take over the Inside the NBA, but
(32:29):
I don't believe that was ever gonna be in the cards. Instead,
Charles Barkley has decided to retire, and again, he's just
like Jerry West or just like Bill Walton. A lot
of the folks maybe never saw Charles Barkley play, but
he has earned a following.
Speaker 3 (32:48):
Because of his broadcast.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
Work in the last twenty four twenty four years, even
though he had a Hall of Fame playing career with
three organizations, the Sixers, Sons and Rockets.
Speaker 3 (33:00):
Real quickly, I want to go around the room.
Speaker 2 (33:02):
I want to ask a simple question, Chef, you go first,
You heard what Barkley said.
Speaker 3 (33:07):
Do you believe him?
Speaker 2 (33:08):
Or do you think he has a come up and
in the next twelve to eighteen months, because remember they're
been to do it one more year and then he
says he's out after twenty twenty five. After twenty twenty five,
have we seen after Charles Barkley behind the mic or
do you think he comes back?
Speaker 10 (33:22):
I think money talks. So if some network, whether it's
NBC or Amazon, shows him the right number, I do
think he would have a hard time at turning that down.
So I think he's just voicing frustration about how not
only is impossible that TNZ will lose the NBA, but
they've kept him and his inside the NBA crew really
(33:43):
in the dark about the negotiations. That seems to be
what he's upset about. So yes, I think I think
that's him voicing his frustration over how that process has
played out, as opposed to him really being dead set
on retiring. So that's how least how I've seen it.
So I think it is possible he retires, but again,
(34:03):
if he's show him the money, I don't see how
he turns it down, given how he seems to like
to live a pretty pretty opulent life right now.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
So well fair enough, and he's got a few shekels. No,
no real issue there. I do believe him though, with
respect to the fact he sees himself as a T
and T guy. He's been there twenty four years and
I think moving on, he's got a lot of emotion
invested a T and T. So to start up with
another network, I don't know if that's going to be
(34:35):
his jam Bree. What are your thoughts on the issue.
Speaker 9 (34:38):
I'm actually I agree. I think that he's if when
he's ready to retire, he's just going to retire. I
don't I don't think he needs to kind of do
like the al Michaels thing and go like the prime
route and like or you know, join another network, right. Yeah,
that's just it's just not the same, and I think
it's just keep the legacy.
Speaker 3 (34:56):
Do you think maybe he wants to be a professional golfer? Now, yeah,
maybe that swing.
Speaker 10 (35:01):
Yes, it's a thing of beauty.
Speaker 3 (35:04):
Charles.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
I know you're listening. It's a thing of beauty, all right.
Actually it's a thing of beauty. If you're trying to
kill a snake and am.
Speaker 3 (35:11):
I cut you off? You got the last word. No, no, So.
Speaker 9 (35:13):
That that was pretty much like I said. I just
think that he's if like and all this drama just
surrounding all the networks and streaming, it's it's just never ending.
So I think it's it's a good time for him.
Speaker 2 (35:24):
Save the drama for your mama, Mark Ramsey, let's get
you in on this quickly.
Speaker 8 (35:29):
I think if they're able to get his whole team
together as Shack and Aaron, Ernie and the Jet, if
they were able to get them.
Speaker 10 (35:37):
Off again, sports studios in laws.
Speaker 8 (35:40):
If they were able to get them all together, I
think he would come back. Other than that he's gonna
he would leave.
Speaker 3 (35:48):
Yeah. I think there's a sentimentality factor there. I do.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
But I also think Charles is his own man, and
when he's had enough, he's had enough. It'll be interesting
to watch. I think when you look at his comments,
there's a veiled emotional anger there, buried in like, Hey,
this didn't have to happen. They've been futzing around with
this now for about sixty days, and I don't like
the way this is going down, and I don't want
(36:13):
to start over with someone else. So I think all
of you bring up good points. My gut tells me
he after twenty twenty five, he may be done. Barring
something completely unforeseen, maybe TT jumps back in the game,
but they could have done that already. All right, coming
up now, remember top of the hour in seventeen minutes.
We have in Mark Medina every Saturday night Medina Magic
(36:36):
Marcus Our Fox Sports Radio NBA guru, and Mark's been
with me a good couple of years now every Saturday night, midnight,
fifty two weeks of the year, midnight Pacific, and we're
gonna talk about a lot tonight. We've got to dive
back into the Lakers' coaching search, and we'll get into
the finals, and.
Speaker 3 (36:54):
We're gonna talk about Jerry West.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
I only met Jerry West one time, and it's always
bothered me that there's this narrative that Jerry West only
won one championship, but not necessarily his fault. He's not
like Lebron where you're gonna blame everybody else when you
lose and take all the credit when you win. West
is a different dude. He was an extraordinary human being.
And I want to share with you perhaps the most painful,
(37:19):
perhaps the most painful NBA Finals loss, where it happened,
how it happened, and what Jerry's role was coming up
and might give you a glimpse into a perspective on
how truly special Jerry West was. I'm Bernie Frattle. We
are coming to you live from the Las Vegas Fox
Sports Radio Tirack dot Com studios.
Speaker 3 (37:37):
Keep it locked right here.
Speaker 2 (37:39):
You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports RADIOW,
We're back on the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
We are coming to you live from me tyrack dot
Com studios here in Las Vegas. Coming up top of
the hour, Medina Magic Mark Medina on our Fox Sports
Radio NBA Guru will dive into a lot of subject
matter this week, on court issues and off court issues.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
We lost a legendary.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
Human being the other day, and I will tell you
that it was announced on Wednesday morning that Jerry West
had passed it the way of and passed at the
passed away at the age of eighty six. I don't
think there's anybody that didn't know. He was one of
the most influential players figures in NBA history. Played for
the Lakers for fourteen seasons, then went on to be
(38:26):
a coach an executive. I referred to him Friday Night
as the Simon Cowell of basketball. Simon Cowell, as you know,
was the creator behind the American Idol and had a
similar show in Great Britain. If you know anything about
Simon Coll's history, he had this ability to not only
ascertain whether or not someone could really sing, really sing,
(38:48):
but he had the ability and impressions to project that
that person's talent would become commercially successful, and he.
Speaker 3 (38:56):
Was almost never wrong.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
He took a chance on a wrestler who created a
hit single in Great Britain thirty years ago and had
sold the main copies and it wasn't even a singer,
but Simon Coll k new.
Speaker 3 (39:05):
He was doing.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
That was Jerry West. But Jerry West was a phenomenal
player long before he became a front office executive and
et cetera. He hadn't played in the NBA since nineteen
seventy four. That's fifty years, and everybody has heard a
thousand times by now that the Lakers had been to
I believe eight finals and he'd only won one.
Speaker 3 (39:28):
Not fair.
Speaker 2 (39:29):
Perhaps the most famous game was nineteen sixty nine Game seven.
They lost by single basket on their home court at
home with the Forum. Bill Russell's final game as a Celtic.
It remarked the sixth consecutive time that the Lakers had
lost to the Celtics. No fault to Jerry West. He
had forty two points, thirteen rebounds, twelve assists in a
Game seven. Jerry West was named the first ever Finals MVP.
(39:52):
Averaged thirty eight points in that series, first ever Finals
MVP in a losing effort. By the way, the Lakers
missed eight team free throws that night. Wilt and Baylor
combined to miss sixteen of those.
Speaker 3 (40:06):
Had they just made two more free throws.
Speaker 2 (40:08):
Well, Jerry West isn't the type of guy that's gonna
remind anybody of that, But I will, I will coming up.
We're gonna dive heavily into the NBA. There's a lot
to get to guess. There's actually a Game five on Monday.
Laker's got to find a coach and we'll talk about
Jerry West as well. So keep it locked right here.
You are listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Well, that's right, you heard the man. The
(40:31):
Bernie Fraddle Show just keeps rolling right along. My name
is Bernie Fraddle. We are coming to you live for
the tyrac dot com studios here in Las Vegas, Fox
Sports Radio. Tirerac dot com will help you get there
an unmatched selection, fast free shipping for your road, answer
to protection, and over ten thousand recommended installers. Tyrack dot
com the way tire buying should be. Well, there's a
(40:53):
reason we have this gentleman on fifty two weeks out
of the year every Saturday night at midnight Pacific time
on they Fouto Show, because there.
Speaker 3 (41:01):
Is always news.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
So without further ado, let me just say this, it's
that time, Mandina Magic.
Speaker 3 (41:09):
Our Fox Sports Radio. NBA Google clearly has his finger
on the pulse.
Speaker 2 (41:15):
Mark so much to get to this week, but and
I realized there's a finals game will be played.
Speaker 3 (41:22):
Monday, Game five.
Speaker 2 (41:24):
We're gonna get to that in just a second as well.
But I kind of lost track this week. Mark there
was there any NBA coaching news around the Lakers.
Speaker 3 (41:32):
I just wasn't paying attention.
Speaker 7 (41:36):
It's honestly, it's the same as last week. It's ongoing
that they're still talking at candidates.
Speaker 6 (41:42):
J J.
Speaker 7 (41:42):
Redick may or may not cut the job, wait and see.
Speaker 3 (41:47):
So, yeah, breaking news.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
I understand he the JJ Reddick after four score in
seven years, finally actually interviewed formerly with the Lakers.
Speaker 3 (41:57):
What are your most telling you? How did that go?
Speaker 7 (42:00):
I want to be clear, he has already talked with
the Lakers. He talked with Rob Polinka at the NBA
Draft combine. I believe he talked with Rob a few
other times, so they've had conversations. I think that today's
meeting is more about meeting more people and having more
in depth discussions. And you know, like with all meetings,
(42:21):
they go well, but we'll see one in the next step.
So if I had to make a prediction here, and
I will, he will be named the head coach, It'll
be after the NBA Finals are over. But I think
right now it's a matter of trying to find the
right coaching staff around him, and also seeing if there's
any concerns about the lack of head coaching experience and
(42:44):
if that overwhelms the positive parts about you know former
NBA player. He gets along well with Lebron James because
of the podcast, and he is a smart basketball savvy mind.
But I do think that not only was the interview
about JJ and gain and know him even more, it
was about trying to get a gauge on what would
(43:06):
be the right coaching staff that's possible to fill out
so that he can't overcome his lack of NBA head
coaching experience.
Speaker 2 (43:15):
And who knows, maybe we'll wake up tomorrow and find
out they're getting ready to throw a bag at Bobby Hurley.
Why not right now, just for what it's worth. And
I never believe that Danny Hurley was going to take it.
We don't need to go back down that road. But
and I do think it was not a good look
for the Lakers, But I don't think they should feel
embarrassed by that. Has there been any fallout whatsoever with
(43:36):
respect to the way that whole situation went down when
Danny Hurley said no.
Speaker 3 (43:40):
I'll pass.
Speaker 7 (43:41):
Yeah, I'm with you. I don't think it was embarrassing.
I think the Lakers took a swing, and they gave
a generous offer. They could have offered even more money,
but I think in fairness, they've still still offered him
enough that would make him you know, I think top
five or six among all NBA head coaches. And you know,
when you look at people like Steve or Great Popolar Chiv,
(44:01):
they're going to make more money for a reason they've
wont championships in the NBA. The second part is that
I think that Dan Hurley's rejection had more to do
with the fact of two things. He's got a good
thing at Yukon and you know, his wife understandably, so
like with all partnerships, player own decisions, and I think
those factors outweighed any of the negative concerns about the Lakers.
(44:26):
And look, the Lakers are not above criticism. They have
a lot of questions about, you know, how their front
office dynamic is, what their vision is for a coaching staff,
especially because of the quick turnover. You know, when you
look at Frank Vogel and Darvin Ham some of their
missus with roster construction the last few seasons. But I
would not rank this on top of that, but I
(44:48):
think that it does lend into question that if Dan
Hurley was their top choice, I understand why it would be.
Why distant process didn't happen earlier. But I think the
Lakers will tell you that they had talks earlier. It
was just it wasn't until you know, two weeks ago
they fell or last week that they felt that there
(45:09):
was actual momentum and a chance to bring him in
for a meeting. But you know, regardless, they're back to
where they were before with talking more agan with J. J.
Riddick and trying to see whether cats are available. But
here's the problem, Bernie, there's not really other cannons available.
You know, James Barrego's available, Kenny Atkinson's available, Scott Brooks
(45:31):
is available. You know, Terry Stotts is available. All those
coaches haven't had coaching experience. But there's not a home
run higher that's available. Because Tyler would agree to an
extension with the Clippers, you know, well before the Lakers
had any shot whatsoever. And then Hurley's back at yukon.
Speaker 2 (45:53):
Storr with Mark Mondina Medina Magic every Saturday night midnight
on the Bernie Frattles show them in Night Pacific, Mark,
I got to ask you to caller brought it up
on my midnight hour segment Friday night and Frankly, I've
broached this gentleman's name before, Mark Jackson. Why can't he
at least get a conversation, because if I'm Rob Polinka,
(46:14):
I've got to at least talk to Mark Jackson given
his experience.
Speaker 3 (46:17):
You played in the league.
Speaker 2 (46:19):
Take it away, you know the question I'm trying to ask.
Rather than me stumble around, go ahead, take it away.
Speaker 7 (46:24):
Well, I don't think this is just for the Lakers
answer this is frankly every twenty nine other teams, of
of courseately Golden State Warriors. I think that there it's
clear that, yes, Mark Jackson, former player, he knows his stuff.
He has players that will respect for him and play
for him. But I think that the reason why the
(46:47):
Warriors let him go back in twenty eleven is they
felt that his offensive system ironically was outdated, even though
he is one of the most brilliant point cards in
this game. But you know, when Steve Kirk took over,
mostly with the same personnel, all of a sudden, they
became this offensive juggernaut. I think the second part is
(47:10):
that there's a feeling that when it comes to assistance
and behind the scenes scenes team staffers, there will be
people to tell you that he didn't treat them the
right way. And I think that that's carried, you know,
basically since then. I mean, there's a reason why he
hasn't been back in a head coaching position. And then
I think the other thing, and you know, Mark will
(47:32):
be the first to admit this, you know, when the Lakers,
with the Lakers position they want to do any justice
and asking if he wants to be an assistant coach
because he doesn't want to be.
Speaker 10 (47:44):
No.
Speaker 3 (47:44):
No, But but.
Speaker 2 (47:46):
For me, again, it's just an esoteric throwaway comment. Doesn't
cost anything to have a conversation with a guy. Nine
years have passed, ten years of past.
Speaker 3 (47:55):
Let's move on.
Speaker 2 (47:55):
I don't want to beat a dead horse necessarily, Mark
Game five, I have his Monday Celtics MAVs. I give
the mass credit. They played desperate, lucally, even played defense.
But I really think Boston rides him like a stick
horse on Monday Night.
Speaker 3 (48:09):
Am I wrong?
Speaker 11 (48:11):
No?
Speaker 7 (48:11):
I think that's also what's gonna happen. You know, the
Boston Sealers, for better or worse, for this season, their
quality of play depends on that they feel that they
have to try and that they feel challenged and they're
up three to zero against Dallas, they let their foe
with the gas. I don't think that they're going to
repeat the same mistakes in Game five, but I will
(48:32):
say I think to Game five will be more competitive
than it had been the first three games, because I
think you're going to see a better version of Luca
Doctrich that's not gonna play to the refs. He's playing
better defense along with his usual offensive brilliance, and I
think the rest of the team will play better too.
But I think even with Dallas playing at their best,
and even if Chriss Porzingis isn't available because of his injury,
(48:56):
I think the Celtics they have too much talent depth
to overcome that.
Speaker 6 (48:59):
All that.
Speaker 7 (49:00):
You know, apologize the Laker fans, but I think we'll
be seeing on Monday Night the Celtics hoisting their eighteenth
championship trophy to now set the league record for most
titles over the Lakers seventeen.
Speaker 2 (49:13):
Wrapping it up with Mark Medein and Medina Magic every
Saturday night midnight Pacific on the Bernie Frattle Show, Mark,
I have to invoke.
Speaker 3 (49:20):
The name Jerry West.
Speaker 2 (49:21):
I mean that worse one time, but this I know
when I say what I'm about to say, you should
be able to relate to this. I'm talking to this
guy and I'm observing his eye contact and his demeanor
as he's listening to what I'm saying, and I'm like,
oh my god.
Speaker 3 (49:37):
I'm around the ore.
Speaker 2 (49:38):
He had well beyond just a player and as a
human being, et cetera. He was listening to what you
had to say, and you're thinking to yourself, I better
measure my words carefully. This guy's too smart. Did you
get that impression to the first time.
Speaker 3 (49:52):
You met him?
Speaker 7 (49:52):
Oh, one hundred percent. He loved basketball and he was
a perfectionist, both for better and for worse. Mostly for better.
I mean, I think he's the best NBA executive editor editor.
Speaker 3 (50:03):
Absolutely.
Speaker 7 (50:05):
He You know, he wore losing on his sleeve. He
never forgot about the disappointments with all those finals losses
against Boston in his career, and nothing was ever good enough.
You know, when he got Shaquille O'Neil, he had to
go to the hospital shortly afterwards because of exhaustion. But yeah,
I felt that experience too. I think that the fascinating
(50:26):
part about Jerry West was that he was Obviously he
was brutally honest about everything, but he also wanted to
know what you thought about things that you're thinking when
he would ask you questions, why does he want to
know what I think? I'm a reporter and he's the
best NBA executive editor ever. But I think it was
two things. One, he wanted to see what you're made
of and see if you know your homework and know
(50:47):
your stuff, and he would tell you if you did
or not. I think secondly, he's like any smart executive
informationist currency and he wants to know the most about it,
and reporters sometimes have information that's useful. But I think
the second thing is that he was just very authentic.
He would share his emotions about things. You know, he
would have some heavy conversations with me about you know,
(51:11):
losing his brother David the Korean War and deal with
the Depression and dealing with some of his health issues
the last few years. But he also talked about joyful
things about you know, his son Johnny for example, rising
the ranks in the Golden State Warriors front office, and
just seeing a lot of players that he respect compete
on a night tonight basis, talk about algend Bale or
(51:34):
when he passed, and how great of a teammate he
was and one of his favorite people ever. And the
late Kobe Bryant was gracious when he was about to
eclipse him for the Lakers all time scoring record in
twenty ten, and was always gracious you know after his
passing too, And so yeah, it was just a very
(51:54):
enriching experience talking to Jerry West because who he was
as a person and who he was as an executive,
all the real deal across the board. I think another
interesting thing talking to Jamal Wilkes for an interview, it
was sports keetaz that he had all the different experiences
with Jerry West, idolizing him seen as a player, playing
for him as a coach that you frankly wasn't a
(52:16):
great experience because he was very demanding and Jerry West
is the first submit that he wasn't cut out to
be a coach, but also playing for him as an
executive because he was just very keen on knowing how
to assemble a roster. And he also dealt with Gain
trade about Jerry West. But they were able to overcome
that part because there was just so much respect for
each other.
Speaker 2 (52:35):
And I think above and beyond all and you certainly
touched on it. He was an authentic, genuine human being.
He struggled with depression his entire life because he hated losing.
I don't think he ever completely reconciled it. He would
withdraw from social interactions. He even go for days and
not talk to his wife or his family. Here's why
I share that, not in the pejorative but in a
(52:57):
positive because West had enough intestinal fortitude to share his
demons and share his battles, because he was trying to
tell people it's okay, you can seek help. And he
was a spokesman for how to deal with lifelong depression.
Speaker 7 (53:14):
You got the last word, Yeah, I mean, you hit
on it really well. And he dealt with those issues.
But I think that he is a success story with
being able to find appropriate outlets to still, you know,
be a winner. And I don't just mean with how
he competed, but you know, he poured his soul into
basketball because it was a safe haven and something he enjoyed.
(53:35):
But he also did a lot of things with the
community Northern Trust Open for example, that golf tournament he
was the executive director on for a few years and
one of the driving forces beyond the fact that he
loved the golf even though he would make a mad
when he would miss putts, it raised funds for military families,
and that tied into the grief that he dealt with
(53:56):
with losing his brother David in the Korean War. And yeah,
it was just he lived a very enriching life for
eighty six years old. Obviously, I'd hope and everyone would
hope that it could be more than eighty six because
even last year he was at Summer League watching games
as if he's just a scout trying to break into
(54:17):
the business. He would go to Clipper games even though
he's just a consultant, because he just loved the game
and he loved to get feedback to whichever team he
was working for. So he lived a full life. But
because of how great of a life he lived, I
just wish that he could have kept doing it forever
and ever, but unfortunately that's not the way life works.
Speaker 2 (54:36):
Mark great stuff is always Once again, when we sign
off on Saturday, you just never know what the news
cycle is going to bring the following week.
Speaker 3 (54:44):
So we'll see you again. June twenty second, Market calendar's peeps.
Speaker 7 (54:47):
Mark, thanks, but I appreciate you as always.
Speaker 3 (54:50):
That is Mark Medina, Medina Magic.
Speaker 2 (54:52):
We bring him on every Saturday night, our NBA Fox
Sports Radio Guru. We have him on midnight Pacific time
every Saturday.
Speaker 3 (55:01):
I want to talk about the WNBA.
Speaker 2 (55:05):
Invoke the word politics, not because I said it, but
a star player for the Dallas Wings had some very
interesting comments recently and what her thoughts were on the
women's Olympic basketball team.
Speaker 3 (55:17):
This might really surprise you.
Speaker 2 (55:19):
I'm Bernie Frattle, were Comedy live from the La Vegas
Fox Sports Radio Tireck dot com studios. Keep it locked,
You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
All right, back at the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports
Radio Company, live from the tarret dot Com studios here
in Las Vegas. As you may have heard, Tuesday, the
(55:42):
US Olympic women's basketball team announced their roster. The selection
committee chair Jennifer Rozzotti talked about the criteria.
Speaker 3 (55:51):
But it seems like I've seen so many comments about
this that they change up, They make.
Speaker 2 (55:58):
It up as they go along. Might find me of
a Woody Allen movie. You know, Woody Allen made about
fifty movies. They're very clever. They just simply are. They
deal with the fallibilities of the human condition in a
humorous way that very few have been able to. But
one of the original movies he ever made was a
million years ago. It was called Bananas, and it has
to do with a young reporter who just got his
(56:21):
first job as a newspaper. And of course it's played
by Woody Allen, and he's dispatched on to San Salvador
to report on the war.
Speaker 3 (56:29):
Yeah it's a movie, okay.
Speaker 2 (56:30):
And so while he's there, he becomes smitten with this
young lady and he really likes her, and he's trying
to impress her, and he's trying to convince her he's
a world traveler. And so he's telling him, telling her
all the places he's been, and she says, well, have
you been to Denmark? Because of course I've been to Denmark.
I've even been to the Vatican. She goes Vatican, the
(56:53):
Vaticans in Rome, I know, but you know, they were
doing so well that has seted a billing in Denmark. Also,
that's how I feel about the USA Basketball selection committee
and the way they keep changing their mind In three
or four days they kept talking and became a long
winned word salad. I'm not going to go into the
(57:14):
Caitlin Clark omission per se as much tonight, but what
I am going to get into a little later is
does this reveal the complexities beyond the court and the
debate that's raging having to do with the WNBA as
a societal entity. A very talented guard for the Dallas
(57:35):
Wings by the name of Marique Obinbaballe. Easy for me
to say, she's a veteran, that she's been in league
about five years. She's averaging about twenty seven points a game.
Speaker 3 (57:44):
At least.
Speaker 2 (57:45):
She played her college hoops at Notre Dame. She said
the other day on a podcast hosted by Shannon Sharp
and Chad Ocho Cinco that she quote took her name
out of the pool for US women's basketball Olympic team
months ago, and she said she thinks quote politics goes
into the selection of the squad.
Speaker 3 (58:05):
She I think very interesting. Now.
Speaker 2 (58:09):
Oguin Bwily has been one of the top scorers in
the league in her five six years all with the
Dallas Wings. She talks about the vibe she feels when
it comes to that stuff it doesn't really have much
to do with your game. It's like they want to
decide who they feel like fits with the team.
Speaker 3 (58:26):
I love it when people speak the truth.
Speaker 2 (58:28):
Okay, she's at least speaking her truth, and it came
off as very genuine. She also went on to say
it's subjective who they think should be on the team,
because everybody's great in the WNBA.
Speaker 3 (58:39):
So who they choose is who they choose.
Speaker 2 (58:42):
You really can't control that. Now, again, this is a
veteran player, a guard who's been in the league six
seven years and five six years. And let's also remember
that she's a prolific player, averaging twenty seven points a game.
And you know, I talked about this last night, that
(59:03):
it is subjective, all right. And if it happened to
Charles Barkley in nineteen eighty four when Bobby nightcut him
from the Olympic team, that team went under win the
gold medal in Los Angeles, And if it could happen
to Isaiah Thomas he was omitted from the team in
nineteen ninety two. I think the committee said, well, if
we want Michael Jordan, he's not going to play. If
(59:25):
Isaiah Thomas is there, well, there's a lot of plausible
deniability and no one has ever really admitted it. But
come on, right, I mean, there's an old joke that
if two people are in an elevator and somebody passes gas,
everybody know who did without saying a word. So we
know what happened there in nineteen ninety two. So it
happened to Caitlin Clark. Okay, I'm not upset by the decision,
(59:45):
but if you're gonna tell me that she didn't deserve it,
they're objective through some personal feelings. And if they're talking
about statistics, and you know, the top scorers, et cetera,
the top players.
Speaker 3 (59:59):
Look, Ark is.
Speaker 2 (01:00:00):
Thirteenth in the WNBA in points per game, not bad
for a rookie after her first month, she's fourth, and
assists per game. When you look at Sabrina Ionesco, she's eighth,
Kelsey Plumb she's eleventh, Jeweloyd fourteenth, all great.
Speaker 3 (01:00:15):
Players, they're all on the Olympic squad.
Speaker 2 (01:00:17):
They have less assists than Katelyn Clark, who's been in
the league all of about fifteen minutes. Clark is second
and three pointers made to ahead of Tarassi in her
first ten games. Caitlin Clark scored more than one hundred
and fifty points, had more than fifty rebounds and fifty assists.
The only other person to accomplish that feat in the
history of the twenty seven years of the WNBA was
(01:00:38):
Sabrina Ionescu. By the way, Kitlin Clark also became the
first rookie and only the fourth player ever in the
league to record thirty points, five rebounds, five assists, and
three steals and three blocks.
Speaker 3 (01:00:49):
In a single game.
Speaker 2 (01:00:51):
Caitlyn Clark moves the needle all right, and not just
because she's popular and she was the number one draft
pick in the all time leading scorer in college or
a various other reasons that seemed to trigger people now.
Just hours before she found out she wasn't gonna be
on the Olympic team. The other day, Clark did another thing,
a rookie w NBA record tying. She had seven threes
(01:01:13):
in a game, scored thirty points in front of just
under twenty one thousand people in Washington, DC. They hosted
the Indiana Fever. The night before, that same team hosted
the Chicago Sky They drew about nine thousand. What do
you think the difference was? All right, Okay, I get it.
Picking a roster is always subjective, But is it based
on popularity? Is it based on the best twelve players?
(01:01:35):
Does it really matter at this point in the end,
Like I said, if it can happen to Charles Barklay
and Isaiah Thomas, it can happen to Kaitlin Clark, and
I think that puts her in a pretty good company.
Everything that has been happening to Kitlin Clark is a
massive sign of respect, period. And when a great player
in the league like Erique Ogaman Wally speaks out the
(01:01:55):
way she did the other day and speaks truth, you
have to pay attention. You have to pay attention. So
what does this all mean? What is Caitlin Clark's I
won't use the word snub, doesn't feel like a snub.
It might be because I from what I'm hearing, the
players on their roster don't want her there. And if
you have information of the country, please feel free to
(01:02:16):
share it because I'm not ask sourced on this as
I am on other things. But what does this really mean?
What does it reveal beyond the court And I'm gonna
give you some thoughts in terms of the aftermath of
leaving Clark off. How she's responded. How does NBC Sports
feel about this? They're broadcasting the games, but first let's
(01:02:38):
go back to our guy, the chef, Kevin Wyrett, with
the latest.
Speaker 10 (01:02:42):
Yeah, the College World Series in Omaha went deep into
the night, and that's because the game between Florida and
Texas A and M delayed by several hours as they're
opening round matchup went almost at one o'clock in the
morning in Omaha. But the Aggies do hold off the
Gators by a final score of three to two in
that opening round matchup. Kentucky with the walk off home
(01:03:04):
run with two outs to go in the tenth as
they beat NC State five to four. NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs,
the Edmonton Oilers pound the Florida Panthers eight to one
to force a fifth game in Florida on Tuesday, So
the Oiler's staying alive. As Conor McDavid his first career
(01:03:24):
Stanley Cup goals at three assists part of a four
point performance. In golf US Open, it's Bryson Deshamble in
the lead at seven under par as he's now ahead
by three strokes. Royan McElroy tied at four second place.
He shot a third round sixty seven to three under
par on Saturday, European Soccer Tournament Euro twenty twenty four
(01:03:48):
at Spain with three goals in the first half as
they beat Croatia three nails. Switzerland over a Hungary three
to one. Italy beats Albania two to one, Despital having
a goal in the first thirty second of that contest.
NFL tee Higgins signing his franchise tag with the Cincinnati Bengals,
so now he's gonna be at camp, which begins next month.
(01:04:11):
Major League Baseball, Yoshi Nobo Yamamoto had to leave his
start after two innings. He had triceips tightness as the
Dodgers didn't get any better for them as the game
went along. They fall to the Kansas City Royals seven
to two. Astros pitcher Justin Verlanders scratched from today start
and Detroit beats the Houston Astros thirteen to five. Cubs
(01:04:33):
over the Cardinals five to one a showta Emon Naga
tossed seven innings. He's now seven to one with an
ERA of one point eighty nine. The Mariners over the
Texas Rangers seventy five Mets win their fourth game in
a row. They beat the Padres five to one, Orioles
over the Philadelphia Phillies six to two, and the game
(01:04:54):
of twin the Athletics and Minnesota Twins was rained out
back to you, Bernie.
Speaker 3 (01:04:59):
Right FM up.
Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
Those vocal cords were an hour away from another performance
by the chef, Kevin Wyret All Right. So, Caitlyn Clark
about a week ago had a very interesting seventy two hours. First,
she was knocked to the floor from behind by an
elbow to the back and a non basketball player player
(01:05:21):
basically received zero repercussions.
Speaker 3 (01:05:25):
And then a.
Speaker 2 (01:05:25):
Couple of days after that, she was left off the
women's basketball roster for the upcoming Paris Olympics. In that decision,
while that set off another round of heated opinions, all
kinds of water cooler talk, all kinds of talk across
sports talk radio, including the show, all kinds of talk
on TV, there was plenty of conjecture as to the
(01:05:45):
sociological aspects and psychological aspects of the decision. And just
like everything else surrounding Kitlin Clark in the WNBA, people
dig beneath the surface because there are multiple things that
can be true. I've said that thousand times. I can
hold two thoughts concurrently. So let's take a look at
(01:06:07):
this from an objective standpoint. If it's possible, was leading
Caitlin Clark off the roster likely the best decision from
a basketball perspective, Well, you can.
Speaker 3 (01:06:19):
Certainly make that case. Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (01:06:22):
This is a veteran team with lots of really good guards.
They're very stacked at the guard position. Even though I
think one of the guards, Chelsea Gray at the aces,
I think you only play like one game this year.
But regardless, these are established veteran players that have international experience,
that have plenty of WNBA experience, and I know that
(01:06:44):
there are possibilities that there could be withdraws, there could
be injuries, there could be players that beg off for
whatever reason. So there's this narrative out there that Clark's
inclusion is still possible. But the truth of the matter
is the squad that they want to bring in has
players with more international experience than Caitlin Clark. And they
(01:07:06):
say USA is top job in Paris is to win
the goal because they've done at every Olympics since nineteen
ninety six and their selections show a clear preference for
veteran experience, and they say, well, you know.
Speaker 3 (01:07:17):
The way to grow the game is to win gold medals. Well,
you have won seven in a row. Why haven't you
really grown the game? You have, but you haven't.
Speaker 2 (01:07:24):
You can't tell me you're growing the game if you
lose ten million every year. Now you're gonna lose fifty
million this year. That's what's been projected. We're gonna get
to that later in the show. I'm gonna break that
down based on reports that I've observed. Now they're flying charter,
you know, due to health and safety reasons. But be
that as it made. It's a decision they make, and
they just continue to bleed money. So as long as
(01:07:45):
Santa claus It wants to piss away good money after bad,
who am I to say anything? And I to be
fair of the WNBA is pretty good product, all right.
They play a good pure form of basketball. They play hard,
they hustle, Rivalries are forming. You're started to learn more
of the players' names. But you know, I don't know
what's going to change in the next twenty five years
(01:08:05):
in terms of them making money. We'll see. I want
to give it up to Caitlin Clark. She's been tremendously
poised and dignified and professional about the situation. She's twenty
two years old. If you haven't observed that this young
lady shows a level of grace and maturity way beyond
her years, you haven't been paying attention because you don't
like her. You're triggered if you're going to do anything
(01:08:26):
you can to get under your skin, including some reporters
who I thought had repidile lams. I'm not gonna mention
their names. They're so desperate to get under her skin.
And I don't know what exactly they need to hear.
Maybe they can tell us. But Clark took the decision
to stride, saying, quote, honestly, no disappointment. I don't know
if I believe that, but she's staying the right things,
But honestly, no disappointment. It just gives me something to
(01:08:48):
work for.
Speaker 3 (01:08:48):
It's a dream. Hopefully one day I can be there.
She's going to be all right.
Speaker 2 (01:08:53):
Two or three weeks ago, I gave a pretty biting
commentary on many, many great Hall of Fame athletes in
four or five different sports that had a slow start
for their professional careers. Let's not forget Steph Curry. When
he joined the league, he was considered too slight. You
weigh one hundred and seventy pounds and were real questions.
It took a year or two. They almost traded him
and kept Monte Ellis. He's now one hundred and ninety
(01:09:14):
pounds and the rest is history. You don't think Kaitlyn
Clark can get stronger, and she's plenty quick enough to
get her Okay, she might not be lightning fast. Birds
can fly to but they can't play basketball. The bottom
line is is Kaitlin Clark is a prolific passer, great
court sense. She's two steps ahead of her teammates half
the time.
Speaker 3 (01:09:31):
She can shoot.
Speaker 2 (01:09:32):
She wouldn't have put up those numbers unless she knew
what she was doing. And she's getting bum rushed, he's
getting charged, she's getting blitzed every play. They're showing her
the ultimate suit of respect, and the truth of the
matter is she's handled it gracefully. Nobody way. She's not
the only rookie they're going after the other one. Some
of the other ones do, but not like this, and
you know that, don't act like they're not How does
the NBC Sports feel about this? I don't care what
(01:09:54):
anybody says. If you don't think they're gonna take a hit,
a viewer ship hit because of this, then once again
you got your own agenda. You don't care about the facts.
Your mind's made up. This has actually been the primary
basis for folks wanting to have Caitlin Clark on the team.
The media rites, well, they fund the vast majority of
(01:10:16):
the entire Olympic movement, and they've done so for probably
fifty years or longer, and Caitlin Clark, whether you like
it or not, has been the foremost driver in a
really obvious growth in attendance viewership records across this year,
both in college basketball and pro women's basketball the WNBA.
(01:10:36):
I think it's pretty clear there's a correlation, there's a
cause of effect that Caitlin Clark's presence would have further
advanced that situation in many ways, codified what's already been
a breakthrough for the WNBA this year.
Speaker 3 (01:10:48):
NBC Sports and their parent.
Speaker 2 (01:10:50):
Comcast, they want a ratings resurgence because they had Olympics,
the most recent Olympics in Tokyo and Beijing, and I
think that's something to do with that. Of course, they
had very low ratings. They want a resurgence. It's a
situation now where okay, we now have to discuss whether
(01:11:10):
our business goals and putting quote unquote, I say this
in their quotes, the best team on the floor because
it's objective, are in direct conflict with one another. What
do you do the old joke about the golden rule,
who has the money makes the rules? Okay, there is
a downside to arguing the TV argument because even if
Kitlin Clark had been selected for the team, I know
(01:11:32):
here we go to making it up again, she may
not have played many minutes again due to the greater
level of international experience, I should say among our teammates. Okay,
I get that she might have rode the bench. Get
on a couple of minutes. They're gonna win the goal anyway,
she gonna But guess what, how many minutes is she
going to play by not being on the team? So
how does that solve any problem? They created their own
(01:11:53):
dilemma for NBC Sports and marketing it because whether you
like it or not, Caitlin Clark was a super star.
Are in college and she's gonna be one in the WNBA. Eventually,
She's already done enough early on to show you. She's
shown you enough flashes to prove she belongs. Is she
one of the best twelve players in the NBA? Nope,
(01:12:14):
probably not, but let's see how this plays out. You
want to ride her epitaph thirty days into the season.
Was Charles Barkley, one of the best players in the
nineteen eighty four Olympic team. When Bobby and I cut him,
I sure as hell think so.
Speaker 3 (01:12:26):
You should have seen the dude at Auburn.
Speaker 2 (01:12:28):
They may have called him the round mount to rebound,
but he played at both ends of the floor like
a wild man. He played with his pants on fire,
like it was raining gasoline. He would have helped that
team now they won the gold medal.
Speaker 3 (01:12:37):
Anyway.
Speaker 2 (01:12:38):
Was Isaiah Thomas, one of the best twelve players in
the nineteen ninety two Olympic team. Come on, you really
have to ask that question. So why do you have
to keep making it up? Are you one of the
best twelve or the argument? Who would you take off
the roster? I can name two players I take off
right now, but I'm not gonna name them, so I
don't trigger people to drive off the road into a pole.
Speaker 3 (01:12:57):
Has nothing to do with anything.
Speaker 2 (01:12:59):
That's just I to find an argument because you don't
like Kitlin Clark in the first place. Facts hashtag facts.
Now there's another narrative, and I don't know. I'm not
smart enough to know this. Okay, all the fans, all
the supporters, all the advocates of Caitlin Clark, and even
Kitlyn Clark herself, there's this new narrative brewing that over
(01:13:20):
the long term, based on what happened Tuesday, this might
be the best decision for Caitlyn Clark because what's going
to happen is the WNB is going to shut down
for a month to accommodate the Olympics, and so by
Kaitlyn Clark not having to travel to Paris and play
in Paris, she could take a break, an extended break.
(01:13:40):
She hasn't had one in fourteen months. She went directly
from finishing her college career at Iowa right to the
WNBA draft and two days later she's in training camp
in the preseason, started the regular season, and now her
regular season pressure with the Indiana fever and all the
media requests she's feeling every day and all the things
and air she's taking, it's got to be exhausting. I
believe she's probably deep down relishing the opportunity to rest,
(01:14:04):
to rest mentally and physically rest. She loves competing. It's
going to be a great month, though, for her to
get healthy rest, maybe get a little time away from basketball,
a little time away from the media and all the craziness.
Just get a little peace and quiet. So those are
all the narratives. Make it up as you go along.
(01:14:27):
Pick the one you like most at the end of
the day, and I'll say this, I'll say this. Look,
I think it'd be a mistake now if they go
back and add her to the team, and she's going
to create a whole new distraction and completely vitiates all
the things they said before.
Speaker 3 (01:14:42):
Her not being one of the.
Speaker 2 (01:14:43):
Best twelve, her not having an international experience, she's not
going to play she needs.
Speaker 3 (01:14:47):
Okay, the decision has been made. Live with it. As
you can see.
Speaker 2 (01:14:52):
Forty years later, it hasn't hurt Barkley a whole hell
of a lot not being on that Olympic team.
Speaker 3 (01:14:57):
Right, So let's let this play.
Speaker 2 (01:15:00):
The thing that bothers me the most about the Caitlin
Clark negativity is that she's been in the league all
of about a minute and a half and you can't
wait to Burier. Give her time, let the career play out.
I'm not predicting she's going to be a Hall of Famer.
Speaker 3 (01:15:14):
She might be.
Speaker 2 (01:15:15):
She's already setting records, she's adapting, she's doing better than
you think she is, and people want to see her
play beyond that. Again, you got your own agenda. I
can't fix that. Did a Major League Baseball player check that?
Did a Major League Baseball umpire have his whole agenda?
And does it lead to a larger narrative that I'll
(01:15:36):
discuss at the top of the hour. Sports betting scandals, Well,
we are now past the sixth anniversary of the overturning
of PASSPA, which created the opportunity for states to legalize betting,
and I believe now we have thirty eight But did
an umpire play by his own rules and find himself
in hot water?
Speaker 3 (01:15:57):
This is an interesting discussion.
Speaker 2 (01:15:59):
I already fried it. Well, we are a company alive
from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tirect dot Com studios.
Keep it locked right here. You're listening to the Bernie
Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right back at
the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Here are company
live from the tyrat dot Com studios here in Las Vegas.
Will take you up to three am Pacific, six am Eastern,
(01:16:20):
just getting rolled and coming up top of the hour.
Very good commentary. Recently, my buddy Jay Cornegay at Westgate
executive at.
Speaker 3 (01:16:28):
The super Book.
Speaker 2 (01:16:29):
He runs the super Book was quoted in the tooth
of the matter is legalized. Sports betting is more popular
than ever, but it's still in its infant stages. It
all changed back in May twenty eighteen when the US
Supreme Court struck down what was called the Professional and
Amateur Sports Protection Act, which George Bushen acted in the nineties.
(01:16:50):
It's called PASPA. Six years of pass bames of dollars
of revenue. Later thirty eight states, we are reaching a
moment of reckoning. You're hearing about players banned for life.
Now you're hearing about basketball players and investigations. And now
it's happened an umpire. Major League Baseball recently disciplined an
umpire by the name of Pat Hoberg for violating gambling rules.
(01:17:13):
They announced Friday, they've disciplined him ten days after, just
ten days after they levied a lifetime ban on a
player and suspended four others for one year. Now, according
to people, I'm not incriminating Holberg. I don't know what happened.
I don't know how they're disciplining him. But he has
(01:17:35):
an umpire in the game this season, he's denied betting
on baseball. This is his story that has to play
itself out. But apparently back during spring training, Major League
Baseball had an investigation regarding mister Holberg an umpire, major
League Baseball umpire, and whether or not he potentially violated
Major League Baseball sports betting policies. Now, apparently the investigation
(01:17:59):
didn't find the evidence that the games that he umpired
were compromised or manipulated. That's a quote, But Major League
Baseball determined somewhere along the line that they needed to
deal with hence the discipline and the fact he hasn't
on part of game all year. This was mister Holberg's response, quote,
I'm appealing Major League Baseball's determination that actually be disciplined
(01:18:22):
for violating sports betty policies. The appeal is pending, and
so it would not be appropriate to discuss the case
if it's found. If is the operative word here that
Hilbert bet on baseball, he's in violation of Rule twenty one,
which punishes people who gamble on games in which they
were involved with with a lifetime ban. They bet on
(01:18:44):
games that they weren't involved in. That's a year long expansion.
Now that's not a word suspension. Okay, you all know
about Tim Donahey, the NBA referee in twenty oh seven
sentenced to fifteen months in prison. I'm not going down
that road with this, but here's where I am going
on top of the hour. Sports betting scandals, I guess
(01:19:05):
they're inevitable. We've had players, we've had front office people,
we've had employees, we had players for the Lions.
Speaker 3 (01:19:12):
I'm now an umpire involved. We'll discuss this coming up
at the top of the hour. Keep it locked.
Speaker 2 (01:19:18):

(01:19:59):
should be. You know, sports betting is as popular as ever.
The handle is in the billions, and a whole new
legions of people who've never done it before are doing it,
and people who've always done it continue to do it.
Speaker 3 (01:20:12):
And you know, it.
Speaker 2 (01:20:13):
Can cross several spheres. I remember years and years ago
when I covered the Detroit Tigers. I walked in to
the clubhouse one day, about two hours before a game,
and I heard dots of yelling and screaming going back
and forth.
Speaker 3 (01:20:24):
They were having their Fantasy Football League draft.
Speaker 2 (01:20:27):
Now, is that gambling, No, but it fed that kind
of spirit. I don't know if they'd do that in
the clubhouse today. But there's high sensitivity, there's high alert.
There's actually high concern now about the fact that sports
betting is crossing several spheres, and there's concern and there's danger,
it's reaching, you know, certain redline aspects. I just got
(01:20:52):
a tweet from a gentleman. Homer nineteen sixty seventy says
gambling on pro sports provides increasing opportunit unities for games
to be compromised. I've always maintained, don't get players to
throw games. Get to the officials who saw us before
with NBAF Tim donnalk yeek can only get worse. I
don't agree, I respectfully don't agree that that's gonna happen.
(01:21:13):
It happened with Donnick. He's not wrong, but that was
also eighteen years ago. We have a whole different set
of checks and balances now to watch things. You saw
what happen a year ago now with the Alabama baseball coach,
and I mean, it's amazing how big brother is watching
in a way you can only imagine so other you're
gonna throw games. But I do think this though. He
brings up a good point, and that is increasing opportunities, right,
(01:21:38):
Instead of for games to be compromised, I would change
that sentence to increasing opportunities for fans to look at
skance and people to wonder. Okay, wait a minute now,
because I can't tell you how many times I've been
sitting in a sportsbook and somebody will throw a pick
and somebody.
Speaker 3 (01:21:50):
In the back goes, oh it scave fixed.
Speaker 2 (01:21:52):
Okay, no one wants to hear that, but you hear
it all the time. But this is not a new conversation.
Fifteen years ago, there was a group of lawyers that
were representing all the US major pro sports teams and
the NCAA, and there was a legal fight in the
state of Delaware over Delaware's bid to expand sports betting
(01:22:13):
in the state. But the attorneys for the sports groups
laid out this warning. And this is again back in
two thousand and nine.
Speaker 3 (01:22:21):
Here's the quote.
Speaker 2 (01:22:22):
Sports lotteries involving single game betting threatened the integrity of
professional and amateur sports and are fundamentally at odds with
the principal. The principal dot dot dot that the outcomes
of professional and collegiate athletic contests must be perceived by
the public as being determined solely on the basis of
(01:22:44):
honest athletic competition. So when you hear about a John
day Porter suspended for life because he's in hawk and
he has to, you know, help outcomes of games to
pay off his gambling debts, or you hear this situation
evolving the San Diego Padres player last week.
Speaker 3 (01:23:04):
Well back in.
Speaker 2 (01:23:05):
Two thousand and nine, the leagues in the NCAA prevailed
in that case. At that time, Delaware was kept from
allowing single game betting single game betting, but the decision
became moot. Nine years later, in May of twenty eighteen,
the US Supreme Court struck down PASPA, which against stands
for the Professional Amateur Sports Protection Act. Six years have
(01:23:27):
gone by, billions of dollars in revenue has been created.
Speaker 3 (01:23:33):
But it feels when you.
Speaker 2 (01:23:35):
Peruse various publications, it feels like there's a real reckoning
happening right now. And there are signs and I was
perhaps in denial about this, that floodgates could open. It's
not just that the legal gambling industry is this giant,
huge monster and it's married to pro leagues and it's
only getting stronger. Let's face it, there is a direct
(01:23:58):
correlation between the property, the popularity of professional college sports
and legalized betting.
Speaker 3 (01:24:03):
Period.
Speaker 2 (01:24:04):
Why the hell do you think people are watching a
Monday night football game when the score is forty two
to three and the game's decided because someone's got the
over forty five and a half and they need a
field goal or something that happen to get that game over,
or maybe they got a prop at on one of
their running backs and you just need to catch one
more pass or gain three more yards to catch that.
Speaker 3 (01:24:23):
Those eyeballs stay glued.
Speaker 2 (01:24:26):
They have benefited. Baseball has benefited immensely. Football has benefited immensely,
and so have college sports. Okay, but the integrity concerns
that were raised fifteen years ago by a team of
lawyers are now being thrust back into the spotlight, and
it's being made prominent by you know, we are finding
(01:24:47):
now they're catching these because we have a loose regulation technology,
you've got mobile betting which can be tracked, and there's
such a demand, by the way, still for the illegal market,
and there's all kinds of nuanced rules for players. And
then you know, they say that don't understand, which is
complete bologney. There are rookie symposiums, there are team meetings,
there are seminars NFL players, NBA players, Major League Baseball
(01:25:12):
play If you don't know what the rules are regarding
sports betting, vs. V. As it pertains to your sport,
you haven't been paying attention. Okay, But be that as
it may. These scandals this past week, some people are saying,
are only the beginning. I don't know, man, Maybe I'm
in denial. Maybe I don't want to see it happen
(01:25:34):
because I know too, you know, I know the big
great sportsbook directors in town from you know, Chuck Spasido
at Stations, Jay Cornegie over at the Westgate, Tony Miller
at the Golden Nugget right on down the line. These guys,
if they're really and if they've been on my show,
maybe I need to get Tony back on to talk
about this.
Speaker 3 (01:25:53):
They're really on the case. They are really on the case.
Speaker 2 (01:25:57):
But the truth of the matter is said quote, despite
all the efforts, it's bound to happen. Legalized sports betting
is in its infant stages. There's a lot of naive
people who believe they can circumvent policies that's already been proven.
Jay's wright operators have a vested interest in keeping these
games true and fair.
Speaker 3 (01:26:15):
Integrity is our product. It's absolutely true.
Speaker 2 (01:26:18):
We don't want to accept wagers on something that's predetermined
you don't want to compromise the market and create an
unfair situation for the player and certainly not for the house.
All right Now, since past was a repeal in twenty eighteen,
the violations have been basically limited to violation league rules.
Speaker 3 (01:26:38):
Okay, Like, for instance.
Speaker 2 (01:26:40):
There were several NFL players that were suspended for placing
non NFL bets on mobile betting apps within team facilities.
That happened with the Lions. You know what happened there,
especially the receiver. But two weeks ago there were three
major betting scandals that came to a head. We talked
about it on my show. San Diego Potter's infielder Tikipedio
Marcano was banned for life by Major League Baseball for
(01:27:00):
betting on baseball, and four other players were suspended. Ipe Misahara,
the former interpreter and confidant of one Shohe Otani, who
illegally wagered millions that he stole from his buddy Otani.
By the way, sports betting is illegal in California. He
pleaded guilty, and an illegal bookie tied to former Toronto
(01:27:23):
Raptors player John k Porter was also arrested by federal authorities.
That's three in the last what sixty days, it's thirty days.
When you ban a player for life, that's as strong
up message as it can. It can be okay, even
if you're not the best player in baseball. You depend
(01:27:43):
Marcano's not right. You probably never heard of him. You
banned that guy for life. The intended effect is that
it's a deterrent. Other people see that and they say,
oh boy, I don't know, man, I kind of got
a good thing happening here.
Speaker 3 (01:27:59):
I don't know if I want to threw this up.
Speaker 2 (01:28:01):
Now, Missahara, who stole seventeen million from Otani and compiled
more than forty million in gambling losses. He's facing over
thirty years in federal prison after his guilty plea, and
Major League Baseball said in a statement that it revealed
that Shoheo Tani is a victim of fraud. Now, when
I was hosting the Ben Mala Show about a month ago,
(01:28:22):
I tell me I took some callers that are convinced
tiny knew more than he was telling them. I have
no idea. I'm not going down that road. I'm not
doing that. But you see a year, what these optics create,
they create an impression, perhaps even an illusion that there
is more funny stuff going on, whether it's true or not.
(01:28:43):
All right, I think when you look at the experts
in the business, they really believe they sort of dodged
the bullet with Epamsahara, because if it had really been
Shoheo Tani making the bets and not an interpreter, this
would have blown up to be a national scandal ten
times worse than the White Sox.
Speaker 3 (01:29:01):
Of nineteen nineteen. I believe that.
Speaker 2 (01:29:03):
Back in April, John Tay Porter banned for life by
the NBA after league investigation showed he passed injury information
to gamblers and then he would intentionally leave games early
to pay off gambling debts. What do I mean by that?
So you know what a prop bet is. A prop
bet is a side bet having nothing to do with
the outcome of the game and everything to do with
(01:29:23):
individual statistics for players for individual prop bets. So you
may say, all right, I'm going to bet johntay Porter
tonight to make under two and a half three pointers.
Then he takes himself out of the game two minutes in,
and that's going to cash, and it kind of flies
under the radar. But if Porter's giving that inside information
to known gamblers, well, now we got a problem. And
(01:29:48):
the truth of the matter is in exiting these games
early he allowed him to pay off gambling debts. But
the bookie who allegedly placed the prop bets, that was,
you know, as a result of Porters inside information. He
was arrested last Monday by federal authorities in New York.
He was attempting to board a flight to Australia. So
(01:30:08):
all of a sudden, now you got a lot of
intrepid reporters. You have a lot of journalistic types that
are looking into this. And it's also possible that inside
information isn't just about in the NBA or Major League Baseball.
It could leak into college too. We don't know that now. Look,
thirty eight states offer some form of league life sports betting,
(01:30:29):
and the revenues have climbed. I mean, we're talking about
from one and a half billion in twenty seventeen to
eleven billion last year according to the American Gaming Association.
Here at Crackman outed me earlier. People love the bet,
They get high making the bet, It feeds their competitive juices,
It allows them to enjoy the viewing participation, they feel
(01:30:55):
like they're involved in some way. I think when the
Supreme Court made their ruling in twenty eighteen, one of
the theories is they didn't anticipate the explosion of mobile betting. Okay,
Without mobile betting, a lot of these violations would not
necessarily be violations.
Speaker 3 (01:31:13):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:31:14):
Now, mobile betting operators are mandated to ensure that any
bet placed by a customer who who is claiming to
be in a state with legal lized sports betting, that
was made in that state, and by the person who
owns the account. You see where I'm going with that.
So an NFL player could be betting vicariously through a player,
or any professional athlete vicariously could be betting through a
(01:31:34):
player with an account set up under another name. But
with more regulated betting, we're seeing now these cases are
coming to the surface because these investigators and these detection
abilities are you don't want to know. They're amazing, all right,
They are very accurate. You are very much on their radar,
(01:31:55):
and this is not something that you want to mess
with or tamper with. You're fooling yourself. You're fooling yourself.
So I don't want to throw cold water on what
clearly has been a positive aspect to enhancing the viewing
participation of professional in college sports. But there is a
reckoning there, honestly is a reckoning that is taking place
(01:32:18):
right now, and we are seeing it in I don't
think it's going to I don't think it's going to
go away anytime soon. It's almost like, what's next. I
think I was wrong about a year ago. I think
I told people, I said, I don't know, man, they'll
get this, They'll they'll get on top of this.
Speaker 3 (01:32:32):
But the optics are changing.
Speaker 2 (01:32:34):
And since then, you've had two people inside of ninety
days Band for Life, and you've had the game's the
biggest star shoe. How Tani compromised by this? Speaking of
another major League Baseball star, it's about time you about
time you recognize how good this rookie is. He is really,
really good. His name rhymes with Paul Skeins of the
(01:32:57):
Pittsburgh Pirates. I gotta tell you what this dude is.
Speaker 3 (01:33:00):
Do it. It's unheard of.
Speaker 2 (01:33:01):
I'm Bernie Fradderwick Company Live from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio,
Tiret dot Com Studios. Keep it locked right here here
listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
All right back on the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
We are coming to live from the Tiret dot Com
studios here in Las Vegas, and in about thirty eight minutes,
(01:33:22):
the dance sensation sweep in the nation. What kind of
brand new fool you followed by what my name? You
don't want to miss that Rockers screwed to night. We've
got the chef, Kevin Wyatt, Mark Ramsay, and of course
Brie will be joining us as well. In the bottom
of the hour. After Chef's performance and update, I will
be diving into the WNBA and their financial headaches. It's
(01:33:43):
not all negative. There could see me some light at
the end of the tunnel. Speaking of money, if you
saw the movie Moneyball, to me, it's one of the
all time classics. I think it came out in twenty
ten and I've probably seen it twenty times.
Speaker 3 (01:33:55):
I read the book. I thought Jonah Hill really pulled
it off with that.
Speaker 2 (01:33:58):
Brad Pitt really pulled it off. But it's a class movie.
But the truth of the matter is money can't buy
what Paul Skeens has. He played his college baseball at
LSU actually started out at air Force six y six, dude,
one hundred miles per hour. Okay, they started keeping stats
on every pitch in two thousand and eight for Velocity.
(01:34:20):
The only guy in his major league baseball history to
strike out a guy did it about a month ago.
Speaker 3 (01:34:24):
Three straight pitches, all over one hundred miles an hour.
And he is dating a gymnast from LSU.
Speaker 2 (01:34:30):
Yeah, I'd say his life is good right now, before
you get into the stats, look in only his second start,
twenty two years old. He flashed in the spring training,
and I don't know whether Dick so long to call
him up, but his second start, he faced the Cubs,
a second straight town. He struck out eleven hitters over
six scoreless innings. And this is a team that had
(01:34:51):
just seen him like a week before, all right, and
he even got into a little trash talk. And his
fifth major league baseball start, he faced Shohey Otani, and
this is the story I just tell you told you
Schemes blew three straight one hundred mile an hour fastballs
right past the best hitter in baseball. When Otani also
got the better I gotta be fair. His next at bat,
(01:35:13):
he's sent one hundred mile an hour pitch over the
centerfield fence. Okay, it was great theater. It was a
great theater. This is a guy that just got drafted,
eleven months on the field and he's facing off against
the greatest player in baseball right now, I think Otani is,
and he went toe to toe with him. And then
just the other night, his sixth career start, Paul Skeins
is at exactly six starts. He fanned eight Saint Louis
(01:35:36):
Cardinals and got a standing ovation from the good people
of Saint Louis, one of the great baseball towns in America,
for throwing another six scoreless innings. The game recognized game.
They saw what Paul Skeins has and they were all
about it. So, Paul Skeins, this is freak show stuff. Okay,
his stat line through six starts, he's three and oligent starter.
(01:35:58):
He's pitched thirty three and he has struck out forty
six hitters in thirty three innings. This is major League Baseball.
This is in the Hoboken Zephyrs. Here he struck out
forty six guys. He's only allowed nine er in runs. Now,
he hasn't thrown enough innings to qualify in all the
major statistical categories yet. But he's got an e area
of two point four to three, So if he were eligible,
(01:36:20):
that would rank tenth in the major leagues. His twelve
point five strikeouts twelve and a half strikeouts per nine innings,
and the aggregate would rank first in the major leagues. Now,
every time we do this, we all look for comparisons.
Who can we compare him to just to give perspective. Well,
(01:36:42):
remember a while ago they compared Caitlin Clark to Pete
Pete Merrivitch, and people lost their mind, not saying he
was as good as Pete Merrivich. What they were saying
is is their accomplishments in our statistics were comparable. So
you had to bring in some sort of comparative analysis
to contextualize what was happening here. The easiest one, Steven
Strasburg out of San Diego State fifteen years ago, was
(01:37:04):
the number one pick overall, and he was absolutely living
up to the hype early in his career. He had
a very similar start through six outings, and you know,
obviously he had a he had injuries and things that
plagued him. But there's your comp all right. Now, last
year there was a pitcher named Yuri Perez. He was
electric and he had great six starts to start the season,
(01:37:27):
but he was not striking out people like Paul skeins Is.
In twenty thirteen, Jose Fernandez had the same type of
startup with Miami. Same goes for back in twenty fifteen,
Noah Cindigard. But if you really want a comp and
baseball baseball peeps will know this, I bet Bree know this,
(01:37:49):
I bet Mark knows this. Roy Oswald back in early
two thousands was phenomenal his first six starts back in
two thousand and one. But see, he'd already been a reliever.
He'd had eight relief of appearances before they said, this
guy's too good, we got to make him a starter.
Speaker 3 (01:38:04):
So what's the bottom line.
Speaker 2 (01:38:06):
We are witnessing an incredibly, incredibly impactful start for this
generational prospect. We have no idea if this run is
going to continue, but the fact that he's already legitimately
good major league baseball starter. When he was in college
baseball last year at this time, helping LSU win the
national championship, he gets drafted. He spent a little bit
(01:38:29):
of time in spring in the minor leagues to get
used to the lifestyle.
Speaker 3 (01:38:34):
And.
Speaker 2 (01:38:35):
He has changed really the fortunes so far of the
Pittsburgh Pirates. If the Pirates can start to win or
continue to win, who knows. Given this expanded playoff format
Paul Skemes has been so impactful. What does the Pirates
become buyers at the trade deadline? I'm not predicting that,
but what I am saying is this. This is a
guy twenty two years old, and if you haven't noticed,
(01:38:58):
he has taken the war world by storm in Major
League Baseball. If you get a chance watch him pitch,
you will not be disappointed. If you get a chance,
go see him pitch. I haven't seen him in person,
but my buddy Larry Sorenson, who has been on the
show ten year major leaguer and his current role is
as the color analyst for Wake Forest Baseball and football,
(01:39:21):
He's seen him pitch in person many times and he says, man,
you don't want to grab a bat against this guy.
Speaker 3 (01:39:27):
So all right.
Speaker 2 (01:39:29):
Coming up after the chef's performance, the NBA, the Dutch
check that the WNBA is having one of its best
seasons ever. Viewership's at an all time high twenty six years.
Speaker 3 (01:39:40):
This is it's peak.
Speaker 2 (01:39:41):
Compared to last May, merchandise sales for the WNBA is
up eight hundred percent, the league pass subscription is up
three hundred percent. And yet, yet, according to the Washington Post,
the WNBA and the twelve teams that comprise the WNBA
are expected to lose roughly fifty million dollars this year.
(01:40:04):
So the league is booming, but the reality of it
is one great season isn't going to fix its balance sheet.
I'm going to talk about the relationship with the NBA
and the WNBA. What's happening there. Take a little bit
behind the curtain and we're down the road. There actually
could be a light at the end of the tunnel.
We shall see. But when I heard I already know that.
(01:40:28):
I already knew that the WNBA was you know, had
had averaged about ten million dollars in losses.
Speaker 3 (01:40:37):
Per year for twenty six years.
Speaker 2 (01:40:41):
But when I heard that they were poised to lose
fifty million dollars this year, I said, I got to
look into this because they are having a renaissance when
it comes to eyeballs and attendants and TV ratings and
all those things.
Speaker 3 (01:40:53):
So we'll take a look at this coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:40:55):
But first, yes, you know me love me, can't leave
without the chef stiffer his performance at his update.
Speaker 3 (01:41:03):
Maybe you know you the for me? You know all
that I want to be and.
Speaker 11 (01:41:18):
And her simultane as you and me and you and
you simultane love him me there two or three sm
So what are your saucier ones there, chef, get those
voices over.
Speaker 3 (01:41:34):
I think the week in the Vegas Sun, did you well?
Speaker 10 (01:41:37):
Oh, it absolutely did. And I practiced my singing all
week and I had to make sure I get off.
That performance paid off for all of our wonderful listeners
this week when I made my return, so happy, you.
Speaker 2 (01:41:48):
Know, we set the record straight. Of course, south Park
one of the great shows of all time. Uh, Kenny Cartman,
you know the whole BUSHBOOKA but this is not the chef.
This is actually our chef and white.
Speaker 10 (01:42:00):
And that's absolutely me. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:42:02):
There ain't no gap, no way, there are no screab
We don't want no scrubs.
Speaker 10 (01:42:07):
Man, anyway, no scrubs in the Edmonton Oilers side of things.
In that NHL Stanley Cup final eight to one, Wow
Florida Panthers, though still up ahead of this series three
games to one, but the Oilers do avoid elimination force
a fifth game in Sunrise on Tuesday. Connor McDavid a
(01:42:28):
four point night, including his first career Stanley Cup goal.
He had three assists and four Edmonton Dylan Holloway two
goals in an assist. Zach Hyman also with a couple
assists as well. In the College World Series, we had
a game and late at night. In fact, it was
actually early in the morning local time when that Florida,
(01:42:50):
Texas A and M contest finally came to an end
after a lengthy rain delay. And it is the Aggie.
He's holding off the Gators three to two in the
opening roundy with a walk off shot with two outs
ago in the tenth inning as it's Mitchell Daily the
hero for the Wildcats. They take down the NC State
Wolfpack five to four. In the US Open, Bryson Deshambeau
(01:43:18):
shoots a third round sixty seven. He is seven under
four of the tournament and he's ahead by three strokes.
Roy McElroy tied a four second place in the NFL.
The Bengals wide receiver T Higgins. He signed his franchise tax.
He will be in camp next month. We got a
lot of soccer going on right now, the Euro twenty
twenty four Championships, as Spain gets three goals in the
(01:43:41):
first half to beat Croacht to three. Nail Switzerland beats
Hungary three to one. In Italy over Albania two to one.
In Major League Baseball, Yoshi Noble Yamamoto leading after two
innings tonight in his start for the Dodgers as he
had to deal with triceups tightness and I didn't get
any better four Los Angeles, as the Royals end up
(01:44:01):
winning this one seven to two. The Astros fall of
the Tigers thirteen to five. Is justin Verlanders, scratched from
his start because of a sore neck, comes over the
Cardinals five to one, as showda Imanaga toss seven innings,
so he's now seven and one with an ELRA of
one point eighty nine. The Mariners over the Rangers seventy five.
(01:44:24):
Mets make it four wins in a row beating the
Padres five to one, and the Orioles beat the Phillies
six to the game between the Twins and Athletics was
rained out. Back to Bernie all.
Speaker 3 (01:44:34):
Right, thanks chef good stuff. Keep those vocal cords warm.
Speaker 2 (01:44:39):
You and Brion Markleby rallying at the top of the hour,
we get a little brand new food.
Speaker 3 (01:44:42):
With my name, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:44:44):
So the WNBA, when I heard they were gonna they
poison lose fifty million this year, that caught my eye.
Part of that is the players have been wanting to
fly charter. Now that's going to coss an extra twenty
five million this year. This is all subsidized by the NBA.
The has massive war chest, okay, and they've been able
to pay for the WNBA for twenty seven years.
Speaker 3 (01:45:05):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:45:05):
With the league getting more popular, seemingly, why isn't it changing. Well,
it turns out that even though the WNBAS is stained
and subsidized by the NBA, the NBA is taking their
you know, they're wet in their beak as well. The
NBA apparently receives about forty percent of WNBA revenue, and
(01:45:27):
some of the outside investors claim that the WNBA has
raised seventy five million from Nike and the NBA owners
and the NBA itself and many are getting about twenty
percent of that, And so that leaves the players of
the WNBA.
Speaker 3 (01:45:40):
With about forty percent of its own revenue.
Speaker 2 (01:45:43):
So that kind of changes the conversation a little bit
in terms of, perhaps that league is capable of making money,
and you know, if they continue to grow and they
perhaps the NBA who's still in the midst of their
media right. So that's why you hear this old Charles
barklay thing. Maybe there could be a situation where the
(01:46:03):
NBA negotiates with one of its stakeholder partners that you
have to also broadcast x amount of number of NBA
WNBA games at this price to sustain your good standing
with the NBA.
Speaker 3 (01:46:18):
Just the thought. We'll see, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:46:22):
But the truth of the matter is the league is growing,
no doubt, and I think a new media rights deal,
coupled with the interest that's been rising, could help WNBA
revenue in the future. According to the Washington Post, they
believe that the revenue could increase from sixty million to
perhaps his high as two hundred million. Seems reasonable, why not?
(01:46:44):
I mean, if you're if your numbers, I mean I
gave you some pretty gaudy numbers a minute ago in
terms of, you know, the percentages that viewership is up
and the percentages that you know the various shun't ice
sales up eight hundred percent, lead pass description three hundred percent.
Speaker 3 (01:47:04):
Those are pretty good numbers.
Speaker 2 (01:47:06):
And I think, you know, Caitlin Clark will get only
better and you'll see other rookies like Angel Rees continue
to come to the forefront in terms of being the
name recognition.
Speaker 3 (01:47:15):
And the rivalry forming. So let's see what happens.
Speaker 2 (01:47:18):
I don't know you, you make no guarantees, but when
you hear it that the WNBA is going to lose
fifty million this year, try to put a little context
on it, and hopefully maybe that's what I did, at
least just a little bit. Speaking of context, why didn't
the Jets excuse Aaron Rodgers' mini caap absence? Well, there's
some theories. We'll dance around it because no one's talking. Really,
(01:47:41):
there are a couple of NFL insiders that have intimated
what went on there. I'll share that. Coming up, I'm
Bernie Fradder. We're coming to live from Las Vegas, Fox
Sports Radio, DIIREC dot Com Studios.
Speaker 3 (01:47:51):
Keep it locked.
Speaker 2 (01:47:51):
You're listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
All right, back on the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports radio.
We are coming to live from thee Tarek dot Com
studios here in Las Vegas. Coming up top of the hour,
Dan Sensation sweep of the nation. What kind of brand
new fool you followed by what my name?
Speaker 3 (01:48:14):
Hey?
Speaker 2 (01:48:14):
Real quickly before I get into the Aaron Rodgers stuff
happening around the Jets, it's just on canny, just uncanny,
real quickly, Kevin Wyre at the Chef Rogers had the
unfortunate incident happened last year after four plays, they're gonna
teed up again this year. Is this Jets experiment with
(01:48:35):
Aaron Rodgers gonna work? Meaning to they at least get
to the playoffs?
Speaker 10 (01:48:39):
Well, it's gonna depend on how much rust Aaron Rodgers
does have after not playing four year. In the fact
he's what with thirty nine years old, forty forty entering
this season, and forty is not a good barometer for quarterbacks.
Tom Brady of course being the exception, but forty seems
to be the agent what you see a major drop
off in a performance. So I think they could have
(01:49:02):
gotten one, maybe two good seasons out of him. But
the fact that he tore his achilles and had to
miss all that time and miss all of that practicing
game action, I think is gonna significantly set him back.
So I do think the Jets can make the playoffs,
just because I mean, who do they really have in
their division? I mean, you got Miami, you got the Bills,
(01:49:22):
but of course who's Josh Allen gonna throw to? And
then of course you've got the Patriots. I mean what
are they gonna do? So I think the Jets do
have a shot at a playoff spot if Aaron Rodgers
is healthy and can at least resemble some of the
form he had. But I don't think it's gonna be
what Jets fans have been hoping for when they signed Hup.
Speaker 3 (01:49:41):
It's just a bad optic all the way around. Brie.
What are your thoughts?
Speaker 9 (01:49:45):
Yeah, I kind of I definitely agree with Kevin just
kind of everything he said.
Speaker 2 (01:49:50):
So as long as Aaron Rodgers is healthy, you think
they'll overcome all of the other side show aspects of
the Aaron Rodgers Jets tens, as long.
Speaker 9 (01:49:58):
As he agrees to stay out of it too and
doesn't try to make it like a media spectacle. And
I mean, this isn't a good start. I don't think
just everything kind of going on. It doesn't seem like
it's going to be a successful season, like everybody's all
the eyes are going to be on them obviously.
Speaker 3 (01:50:14):
Oh boy, that's sure. That's for sure. It already is.
Speaker 2 (01:50:16):
And he hasn't really played a full game exactly, Mark Ramsey,
do you care to appine on this.
Speaker 8 (01:50:23):
I think we'll be able to tell in the first
four games whether the whole team can get on the
same page and work together, play together both sides of
the ball, doing what needs needed to be done to
first be a team and get things done.
Speaker 10 (01:50:40):
And you know, whether Rogers has it together.
Speaker 8 (01:50:44):
I mean, we'll be able to tell by the first
four games whether he has the ability to live up
to everybody's hopes and dreams.
Speaker 2 (01:50:53):
I think he's got the ability, But the question is
the health is always going to be a concern. And
the other thing too, of course, is I am not
enamored anymore with the sideshow aspects of the whole Aaron
Rodgers act.
Speaker 3 (01:51:07):
I'm just not.
Speaker 2 (01:51:09):
He comes up just since coming over to the Jets,
he was dating Chalene Woodley for a while.
Speaker 3 (01:51:13):
I don't know what happened there. I don't care.
Speaker 2 (01:51:15):
Then he had the Hyauasca deal and the Dark Retreat deal.
Speaker 3 (01:51:18):
And if it's not one thing, it's another.
Speaker 2 (01:51:20):
And now we come to find out this is headline
material was updated as recently as Friday, that obviously Aaron
Rodgers is not attending any of the mini camp workouts
which are mandatory. However, we find you know, not only
is that in and of itself a look that's going
(01:51:42):
to raise eyeballs and some head scratching and light of
the fact what happened last year, you think it'd be
all business. You gotta recovery. I mean, they got to
the Jets bank their future on this guy. And we
find out, I think the press conf and is handled
by Robert Salo was really kind of clunky. We find
(01:52:02):
out that the apsence was not excused. Okay, so what's
going on here? This book's missing a chapter. What is
going on? And now there are multiple members of people
surrounding the NFL that are questioning why the New York
Jets didn't simply say they could excuse eron Aaron Rodgers
(01:52:22):
from attending the two day mandatory mini campus last week,
since apparently the Jets knew ahead of time he'd be
away from the team.
Speaker 3 (01:52:31):
Now. Albert Breer, who's as big as.
Speaker 2 (01:52:33):
An insider as you'll find anywhere, he was on the
Rich Eisen Show lately, and here's what he said.
Speaker 3 (01:52:38):
Quote.
Speaker 2 (01:52:38):
The best I can answer right now is that I
feel said about that he's somewhere that they cannot excuse
and maintain credibility with the rest of the locker room. Well,
that makes it even more cryptic. Where the hell could
he be? You know, he's in some sex slave dungeon somewhere.
What are we doing here now? They say it would
(01:53:00):
not be unexpected to be just kind of an out
of the left field thing for him in terms of
his unspecified whereabouts. But I think that statement only makes
it worse. And look, Aaron Rodgers, he's got a body
of work, he's got a history, Okay, he kind of
likes getting involved in these very off the beaten track
(01:53:22):
trips and these unique excursions during the off seasons and
especially heading into a season. And a Colin Coward earlier
this week said he was told that Rogers was quote
on vacation overseas.
Speaker 3 (01:53:35):
That's pretty broad, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:53:38):
Dina Rassini of The Athletic, who's was plugged in as anybody,
also mentioned on Thursday that Rogers was quote taking a
vacation overseas and didn't want to reschedule it around the Jets' practices. Okay,
so they couldn't have, at least for purposes of optics
said this was excused the minute you heard the word unexcused.
(01:54:00):
What a different dynamic on this in my opinion. Now
the Jets apparently are going to find Aaron Rodgers for
missing mini camp, even though he has had a couple
players Sauce Gardner and another cornerback DJ Reed, they've defended
Aaron Rodgers saying that quote they communicated to him they
(01:54:20):
wouldn't be able to excuse him for that, and that's
how you maintain credibility with your locker room. But a
couple of players defended him. But then I guess the
other issue was accorned to galber Berry. You can't do
something for one person that you wouldn't do for other
stars of the team or guys down the roster, right,
And that's where you really create the problem, and you
have disparate treatment for players. And I think the bigger
(01:54:45):
thing here too, is it the question for me, if
I could ask Robert Sala, one question is why you
just put the story to rest about a month ago
when you confirm that the team had Ota, but Rogers
was going to be elsewhere the second full week of June.
(01:55:06):
Because it's been planned for a long time. There's nothing
to see here, move along, and now all of a sudden,
there's all this crazy media coverage. The Jets have put
this spotlight on themselves in the pejorative for all the
long reasons, and it feels like this could have been avoided.
Reporters have basically ripped the Jets for what these are
(01:55:27):
considered to be now self inflicted wounds because the Jets
could have handled this better. Right after it was learned
that Aaron Rodgers had planned this trip long before the
Mini captates were revealed, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk
went on to question why the club just didn't hold
Mini caap the first week of June or just simply
(01:55:48):
excuse him. Okay, Now, that's the part to me that
makes this story skid across the street like a drunk
crossing in icy street because of the way it was handled.
Speaker 3 (01:56:00):
There's the event itself and then the way the Jets
handle it. So let's go back around the room. Let's
start with you shifted.
Speaker 2 (01:56:06):
Did Jets make this worse by the way they're communicating
it to the media, so you got the event itself, Rogers,
missus camp, he's got something overseas. It's been planned, but
it's not excuse. Did they Jets make it worse by
the way they're handling it?
Speaker 10 (01:56:21):
Yeah, I mean I think I don't like the idea
of him just taking off and missing stuff and not,
you know, rescheduling his foreign trip that he's taking to
be there. I think that sets a bad precedent, sets
a bad example for the younger players on the team.
And I mean if he wasn't Aaron Rodgers, who of
course probably be a Hall of Fame quarterback when he retires,
(01:56:44):
But if he wasn't the Hall of Fame quarterback, I
think the team would be coming down on him for
those antics in the way they kind of are.
Speaker 3 (01:56:51):
By saying, it's an excuse. I got to go. I
want to make sure I get to everybody here. Breed.
Did the Jets botch this by the way.
Speaker 9 (01:56:56):
They handle it, they definitely did. I think it's something
they could have said, Hey, we're just going to handle
this in house. He's he's missing time for things that
we're discussing, we're going to keep in house.
Speaker 2 (01:57:05):
That's just my opinion, all right, And uh, Mark Ramsey,
your thoughts and on how their Jets handle this.
Speaker 8 (01:57:13):
I guess they're just dealing with Aaron the way they
always deal with there, and what he wants to do
doesn't necessarily go with how they want to conduct business.
So just deal with it and talk as less as possible.
Just let him do it on.
Speaker 10 (01:57:30):
You.
Speaker 2 (01:57:30):
You feel there is some sort of disconnect there, but
he's a whole of famer. They're trying to catch lightning
in a bottle and see if they get one more
out of them. And the Jets can, you know, get
to the Super Bowl and erase with Joe, not erase
but you know the old Joe Namath super Bowl three situation.
Speaker 8 (01:57:46):
Just deal with things as they come and just move
on as quickly as possible.
Speaker 3 (01:57:50):
But they don't. But they don't do that. They don't
do that. I mean, they could have moved.
Speaker 2 (01:57:54):
It's it's awkward, it's weird, it's stupid, it's almost bothersome.
And I'm not sticking off for Aaron Rodgers. But here's
the deal. All they had to do was make it
so that. Okay, this is excused. It's not our first choice,
but move on. There's nothing to see here. And as
it's been brought up, apparently this trip was planned a
(01:58:15):
long time ago. So why did they just move the
mini camp dates. They could have done that. Look, they
acquired Aaron Rodgers. They gave up a lot to get him.
And if Aaron Rodgers doesn't play this whole season, this
thing's just going to be an abject disaster. And I
think they'll move on this. This will go down with
one of the great botches of all time coming up?
What kind of brand new fool of you? And what
(01:58:36):
my name? Keep it locked right here? You're listening to

juncture every Sunday morning, two am Pacific, five am Eastern.
Speaker 3 (01:59:27):
You see the beauty of it is?
Speaker 2 (01:59:29):
Is we Yogi Berra once said you can observe a
lot by watching. That's exactly what we do. You see
because around this great land of ours, from seed to
oily seed, frankly, around the world, well, people are people.
They engage in activities. Some are questionable, some are nefarious,
some are innocuous.
Speaker 3 (01:59:44):
As soon as they get.
Speaker 2 (01:59:45):
Home and look those words up, here's the bottom line.
Whatever these behaviors are, and sometimes they're illegal, they can
land you in jail.
Speaker 3 (01:59:51):
Sometimes you're just silly.
Speaker 2 (01:59:53):
But no matter what the event is, no matter what
your action is, no matter what has transpired the behavior,
it always leaves us scratching our head and asking ourselves,
what kind of.
Speaker 12 (02:00:04):
Brand new fool are you?
Speaker 10 (02:00:11):
So?
Speaker 1 (02:00:12):
What kind of brand new fool are you so?
Speaker 2 (02:00:14):
Last week we managed to skip Florida as a destination,
but Florida is back in the news, we bring you
to Velucia County, Florida, and we introduce you to one
mister Dewey Smith, thirty eight years old.
Speaker 3 (02:00:30):
Quite a body of work.
Speaker 2 (02:00:31):
He stole some wallets, some credit cards, a couple of cars,
a couple of guns taken from two vehicles, went on
quite a spree. But you're not gonna believe what did
him in. And it has something to do with food.
Speaker 3 (02:00:45):
No, not taco bell. Maybe we'll do that next week,
but hold that thought. Okay.
Speaker 2 (02:00:53):
So, according to the Sheriff's office, a bunch of breakings
were reported very early in the morning on Jefferson Avenue
somewhere wherever they hell of Lucia County is okay, but
that's not the point. So investigators happened upon the scene,
and they searched a car, and they found that the
center glove box and council had been rummaged and a
(02:01:16):
victim's wallet was missing. Deputies then searched other situations and
they started to interview people, and this woman said that
she told the cops that this mister Smith, who was
the acquaintance of a woman who'd stopped by the night earlier,
asking if she knew anybody that wanted to buy a gun.
They asked her to call a number and see what
(02:01:38):
the balance was in a gift car, but she refused.
Speaker 3 (02:01:40):
Things started to get weird, so people started to call
the cops.
Speaker 2 (02:01:44):
Well, the cops showed up and they started to interview
people in homes, and they started to look in the cars,
and they started to.
Speaker 3 (02:01:54):
Do more of a forensic investigation. And what did they see.
They see a.
Speaker 2 (02:02:00):
Of red sauce and a pizza box and that led
to mister Smith. Didn't popped, deputies said they found what
appeared to be marinera on the interior of a car door.
Speaker 3 (02:02:14):
Now a few houses down the road.
Speaker 2 (02:02:16):
As part of the investigation, they found an empty pizza
box near another car that had been broken into, allegedly
by Smith. That's what the records show. An investigator said.
A nine millimeter handgun and a concealed weapons permit were
also taken from the vehicle, and as the deputies continued
to canvas the neighborhood, a woman who spoke with the
cops said that Smith had stopped by earlier in the
(02:02:39):
night and she saw him I think breaking into a
car and there was a pizza box, so maybe mister
Smith helped himself out to some pizza. At the end
of the day, mister Smith faces charges of arm burglary
of a conveyance, burglary of a conveyance, four counts of
fraudulent use of credit cards, grand theft of a firearm,
(02:03:02):
possession of a firearm by a convicted felon theft, and
dealing in stolen property. Other than that, not much happened
for mister Smith. But how did he get popped? All
because of a little smear of Marinara.
Speaker 3 (02:03:15):
Sauce on a door?
Speaker 2 (02:03:16):
Because well, you know, while you're involved in the crime
scre you gotta have a little notch. You gotta have
a little nourishment, right, So mister Smith helped himself to
some pizza while committing a series of crimes, which also
leads us to scratch our heads and asking why, mister
Smith of Lucia, Florida.
Speaker 3 (02:03:31):
What kind of brand new fool are you?
Speaker 2 (02:03:35):
Okay, chef, you were off last week, so why don't
you dive back into the fray?
Speaker 3 (02:03:39):
What have you got forced tonight? You're a veter at
this game, all right.
Speaker 10 (02:03:41):
So we go to New del Heat, India, where.
Speaker 3 (02:03:44):
Oh wow, criminals might be at first.
Speaker 10 (02:03:47):
He had been on the run for around ten years
from police. He was facing charges involving snatching, theft, possession
of illegal arms, and bootlegging at several police stations in
the Dell the area. So he had evaded police for
a decade. So a constable, a mail constable at the
New Delhi Police Department, decided to come up with a
(02:04:10):
creative solution to lureum out of hiding. He posed as
a woman on Instagram. So he created a fake Instagram
handled to lure forty five year old He's just called Bunty.
So Buntie is his name. The accused of criminal and
the constable created the account after several attempts by police
(02:04:31):
to get him, so they received a tip off that
he was hiding in a place called Indira Vicas Colony
that they still couldn't exactly find him. But when they
went to that town, they noted they went on social
media and saw that he had an Instagram account. So
they've decided to create a fake Instagram handle with a
woman and that's a good drop right there anyway. Anyway,
(02:04:57):
So he created the fake Instagram handle of a woman
and he started chatting with Bunty and he was eager
to befriend the fake Instagram profile, so he agreed to
meet with the woman at a metro station, where he
was properly arrested after he was found. So that brings
a new definition to the term horny jail. So bunty
(02:05:19):
in New Delhi, India, what kind of brand new fool
are you?
Speaker 3 (02:05:22):
Wow? That's a word solid in the half.
Speaker 2 (02:05:24):
And I don't think we've ever ventured off to India
for any of our brand new fools. All right, So
the double points there, chef for taking us to India.
All right, Breen, you joined us last week as part
of the fray, did a great job.
Speaker 3 (02:05:39):
What are your thoughts tonight on what kind of brand
new fool?
Speaker 9 (02:05:41):
Okay, so we're going to head over to New Jersey
and instead of deadliest catch, we got the easiest catch.
Sayima Johnson, aged twenty seven, a former postal service worker
from Jersey City, was on the run for fraud in
Pennsylvania when she applied to work at an New Jersey
sheriff's office. Now it wasn't for something under the radar
(02:06:04):
like a janitor or like a receptionist. She applied to
be a security guard like if I were you, if
I was in trouble with the law, the last place
I would apply to work would be like a law
enforcement agency, where I think background checks would be required.
I don't know that's right, common sence. I'm not sure.
She was called into the station for a job interview,
(02:06:25):
or so she thought, and when she arrived she was
immediately arrested. So not only was she on the run
for fraud charges, she was also wanted for ten bench
warrants for failure to appear in court on traffic charges.
When Johnson was brought into custody, they also found stolen
credit cards, so credit card charge theft charges were added
(02:06:47):
to the mixed It's like, Ema Johnson, what kind of
brand newfall are you?
Speaker 3 (02:06:52):
Good stuff? All right?
Speaker 2 (02:06:53):
Good group all the way around tonight, New Jersey to
New Delhi, India to Florida. These folks, perhaps someday can
put their heads together make a rock pile, but always
leaves good father fodder. Try that to get in English,
good fodder fodder for our show. All right, great job.
(02:07:13):
Of course, That allows us now to segue into our
second favorite bit that we lovingly refer to as what
my name?
Speaker 3 (02:07:26):
And here we go.
Speaker 2 (02:07:29):
All right, I'm the only Major League Baseball pitcher in
history to actually throw a no hitter at coors Field.
The chef Kevin Wyre, what my name.
Speaker 10 (02:07:38):
The only pitcher to throw no hitter a crusher at all.
I know this one, Hideo Nomo.
Speaker 3 (02:07:42):
Look at that right out of the gates. I think
last week it was three Mark and Mark and I
forget if Shay was with us. You guys went like
eleven and straight.
Speaker 10 (02:07:54):
I remember Vin Scully. Vin Scully said, Hideo Nomo doing
what they said could not be done.
Speaker 2 (02:08:00):
Yeah, that's right, good stuff. Okay, let's flip to the NBA.
I'm the only NBA head coach in the history of
the NBA. That's the department of redundancy department. I'm the
only NBA head coach in the history of the NBA
to be swept twice in the NBA finals. Bri What
my name?
Speaker 3 (02:08:25):
Phil Jackson?
Speaker 2 (02:08:27):
You're not that far off, but it's not Phil Jackson.
Good effort getting the name out. I'm the only NBA
head coach to be ever swept twice in the NBA Finals.
Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 10 (02:08:41):
Uh, Larry Brown?
Speaker 3 (02:08:43):
Not Larry Brown?
Speaker 2 (02:08:47):
All right, I'm the only NBA head coach to be
swept twice in the finals.
Speaker 3 (02:08:52):
The chef what my name?
Speaker 10 (02:08:54):
Byron Scott?
Speaker 2 (02:08:56):
Not you're close you and b right, No, it was
it was actually pat Riley.
Speaker 3 (02:09:02):
Pat Riley.
Speaker 2 (02:09:02):
The nineteen eighty three Philadelphia seventy six ers beat the
Lakers and four, and then the eighty nine Pistons beat
the Lakers and four. But Byron Scott was hurt and
couldn't play, and Magic got hurt game two, so it
really was kind of moot.
Speaker 3 (02:09:14):
But it was actually pat Riley. All right, I am
the only.
Speaker 2 (02:09:19):
NBA player in history to be a NBA Finals MVP,
even though my team lost the series, bri What my name?
Speaker 10 (02:09:27):
Jerry West?
Speaker 3 (02:09:29):
Good job?
Speaker 2 (02:09:29):
Eight plus see I do one of these a show.
I mentioned it earlier in the show, but you may have.
Speaker 3 (02:09:33):
Already known it already.
Speaker 2 (02:09:36):
All right, all right, people, Well as you saw last Wednesday,
sixty thousand people paid thirty six dollars a piece Wednesday
night to honor Tom Brady. But while they were there,
they gave me a full two minute standing ovation. Mark Ramsey,
what my name.
Speaker 10 (02:09:57):
Was it?
Speaker 8 (02:09:58):
His former owner?
Speaker 10 (02:10:01):
Mister, No, his former owner, not.
Speaker 3 (02:10:05):
The former owner.
Speaker 2 (02:10:07):
You can get a Bob Kraft, right, they want to
lead the witness, all right. Sixty thousand people paid thirty
six dollars a ticket last Wednesday night to honor Tom Brady.
But while they were there, they gave me a full
two minutes standing ovation, Chef, what my name?
Speaker 10 (02:10:24):
Two minutes standing ovation of maybe even longer Bill Belichick.
Speaker 3 (02:10:31):
It is, in fact Bill Belichick, which begs the question.
Speaker 2 (02:10:40):
Were they giving him a standing ovation because he won
all those Super Bowls, including two of the New York
Giants as a defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells. Or they gave
him a standing ovation because he's dating a chick who's
twenty four. Talk amongst yourselves, anybody any thoughts on that? Okay,
we move along, We move along, all right. In the
(02:11:03):
history of the NBA Finals, I have had more forty
point games than anybody else, more thirty point games than
anybody else.
Speaker 3 (02:11:14):
Bre What my name.
Speaker 9 (02:11:17):
I don't want to say is Jerry West again?
Speaker 3 (02:11:20):
It is Jerry West again. I sometimes do this during
the shows too, where i'll, you know, throw that name up.
Speaker 2 (02:11:26):
Yeah, I want Jerry West to get his props. He
was such an elegant man, so yeah, he had more
forty point games in the history of the NBA Finals
than anybody, more thirty point games than anybody, and even
had a fifty point game too, and there's only been
a couple of people that have actually done that. All right,
good job, all right, we're gonna switch gears because you
guys are doing so good. We'll see if we attended
(02:11:48):
our Civics class in high school.
Speaker 3 (02:11:51):
On Mount Rushmore.
Speaker 2 (02:11:52):
I'm the only president who is wearing glasses, Mark Ramsey,
what my name.
Speaker 8 (02:12:00):
Was the belt?
Speaker 3 (02:12:01):
Look at you? All right, you guys are just showing off. Now,
that's just outstanding.
Speaker 2 (02:12:10):
Recently, at an auction, my game warn NFL pants for
the last game I ever played in were sold for
eighty nine thousand dollars.
Speaker 3 (02:12:22):
Chef.
Speaker 10 (02:12:23):
What my name, Tom Brady?
Speaker 2 (02:12:26):
It is Tom Brady? Outstanding, just outstanding by everybody. All Right,
we're gonna flip the golf now. Just this past two weeks,
I won my fifth PGA tournament. I'm the first guy
(02:12:49):
to win five PGA tournaments before July since two thousand.
What my name, bre what my name?
Speaker 9 (02:13:01):
Scottie Shuffler.
Speaker 3 (02:13:03):
It's Scotty Seffler. I'm proud of you guys.
Speaker 7 (02:13:08):
Man.
Speaker 3 (02:13:08):
I'm just proud of you, guys.
Speaker 9 (02:13:10):
I mean, I don't know if that's like a father's
day thing, because they just had a kid like a
month ago, so I didn't know if that was like
a father's day theet.
Speaker 2 (02:13:16):
It doesn't matter how you got the answer, you got
the answer, okay, all right, Well along those lines, I'm
actually the last golfer to win five PGA tournaments before July.
Speaker 3 (02:13:31):
Mark Ramsey, what my.
Speaker 10 (02:13:32):
Name Zander Shoffley.
Speaker 3 (02:13:36):
That's excellent. It's not him, but boy, a plus for
the effort there.
Speaker 2 (02:13:40):
Nicely done, Mark, I'm the last golfer to win five
PGA tournaments before July.
Speaker 3 (02:13:46):
This chef, Kevin Wire, what my name?
Speaker 10 (02:13:47):
Tiger Woods?
Speaker 3 (02:13:48):
It is, in fact Tiger Woods. You guys, I'm proud
of you.
Speaker 2 (02:13:52):
He just completely kicked what and I think it's outstanding
what you did.
Speaker 3 (02:13:58):
And all right, you do. I have to do a
hockey one tonight now to get to you know, to
try to eat it.
Speaker 9 (02:14:03):
I think I don't think Kevin I would like that,
but you if you want to. It's your show.
Speaker 3 (02:14:10):
Record here. I don't know, man, Well, nothing, nothing's going
to ruin your record.
Speaker 2 (02:14:14):
I'm just trying to see if we can see if
we can switch things up here. All right, this is
actually a fairly easy one. In the history of the
National Hockey League, I've had more fights than any other player,
Mark Ramsey, What my name?
Speaker 8 (02:14:33):
Uh, it's not Stan Makeda.
Speaker 2 (02:14:38):
Stan mkeedah of the former center of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Of of course Stan Mkeda donuts fame right in the
movie with Mike Myers. All Right, in the history of
the National Hockey League, I've had more fights than any
other player in my career.
Speaker 3 (02:14:53):
Bri what my name?
Speaker 9 (02:14:54):
You did this a few weeks ago, and I don't remember.
I think I said Tamo Salon And I don't think that's.
Speaker 2 (02:15:01):
It's not right, but it kind of. It's kind of
the ViBe's got that kind of name's got that kind
of vibe. All Right, we'll see if the chef can
get it. In the answer of the National Hockey Like,
I've had more fights than any other player.
Speaker 3 (02:15:12):
What my name?
Speaker 10 (02:15:13):
I know they named a unique hat trick after Gordy,
how so I'm gonna guess that just because I mean,
why did they name it after him if he didn't
find it well?
Speaker 2 (02:15:22):
The Gordi Hall hat trick, which he actually debunked was
and he'd get score a goal, get an assist, and
have a fight in the same game, which Gordi House says,
I don't know that they were. You're right, that's an
old folk tale I've met, Gordy, he said, I don't
know if that's true. It's actually a guy by the
name of ty Domy. He had like three hundred and
thirty four fights in his career, and he was like
his hands were like a steam shovel. He just kept going,
(02:15:43):
all right, great job by everybody all the way around
on brand new fool and certainly on what my name
an extremely heady crew here. I'm gonna have to get
up Mondy late in the afternoon to pull one over
on you guys. I'm gonna have to maybe start hitting
the local librariy or something, or the library or something
like that too. I can so I can. You know,
(02:16:04):
you know what I mean, Hey, you know I'm gonna
dive into this heavily next week as to why Dan
Hurley staying in college basketball is really good for college basketball.
Maybe not so good for the Lakers, but really good
for college basketball.
Speaker 3 (02:16:21):
I'll explain Kevin Up. I'm gonna tease it. Next week,
I'm gonna get into it a lot more heavily. I'm
Bernie Fraddle.
Speaker 2 (02:16:26):
We're coming toy line from the Las Vegas Fox Sports
Radio tirect dot com studios. Keep it locked right here.
You're listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
We're back on the Bernie Frederick Show, Fox Sports Radio.
(02:16:47):
Come to your life from the tyrack dot com studios
here in Las Vegas. Outstanding job by the crew, Brie Mark,
the chef, Kevin Wirt on what kind of brand new
fool you are and what my name? We move on,
as are the Lakers and their coaching search because Bobby Hurley.
I did it again. I can't believe it. Danny Hurley
(02:17:08):
turned them down. Bobby of course is his older brother,
all right, So, as I mentioned, and I'm gonna get
into this more heavily next week, Bob, Danny Hurley turned
down the Lakers, which I believed he would all along.
And this is going to turn out to be I
(02:17:29):
think a boon for college basketball. I think the good
news has yet to be written because there are key
storylines that will be heading into the season. And you
all know that the future always has a way of
arriving ahead of schedule. We're two weeks from July, and
then July leads him to August, September, October, then camp's open, November,
there's game, so pretty soon you'll be talking about Danny
(02:17:49):
Hurley and the Yukon Huskies and their quest to three peet,
which no one's done since John Wooden.
Speaker 3 (02:17:55):
But it's beyond that.
Speaker 2 (02:17:56):
In many ways, Danny Hurley has been really the perfect
frontman for college basketball, and particularly this modern version of
college basketball where everything's under the white hot spotlight of
the media. He has a big personality, He's got big
shoulders to carry this load. He's become kind of a
captivating figure because as you watch his demeanor on the sideline,
(02:18:19):
he can look like a crazy man who puts on
a show, but he's really not a crazy man. Now
he can morph into that when he works the refs
or every now and then he will, you know, work
one of his players over. But he's also a very
thoughtful guy, a very introspective guy. He's very bright. He's
he didn't get to where he's at by accident. But
here's where I'm going, Well, this is why this is
(02:18:40):
so good. For college basketball, because if you've noticed, college
sports right now are going through a real transition that's
not particularly pleasant. So when you try to construct a
roster with the transfer Portland nil, how do you do
that as seamlessly as Danny Hurley's done it. He's not
only creating a whole better than the sum of its parts.
(02:19:02):
He'll take a freshman who's elite and mesh him with
a top transfer and other multi year rotation players who've
been on their roster and NBA players who are about
to be drafted, and he puts them all together in
a blender. And he still emphasizes player development.
Speaker 3 (02:19:16):
He's a teacher. Coaching is teaching.
Speaker 2 (02:19:18):
That is the number one reason why I believe he
was never going to leave a Yukon that along with
his family, because in the NBA it's a players league.
In college it's a coaches league. He's a teacher.
Speaker 3 (02:19:29):
Now.
Speaker 2 (02:19:30):
He has brought new ideas to the table from an
ex's and oh standpoint, and he has an offensive system
that runs more sets than just about anybody in college basketball.
And he's already influencing other programs, not just in college basketball,
but overseas professional teams, high school teams, AAU teams, and
he's doing it at a basketball school that's a true
(02:19:52):
maybe not blue blood, but it's a true basketball school.
This is a program that won three titles under Jim Calhoun,
won another one under Kevin Allie, and they basically said,
you know what, we've decided, we're going to be a
basketball school. They chose basketball over football. They ditched the
American for the Big East back in twenty twenty. So
you can look at the sideline annex, you can look
(02:20:14):
at the bluster, look at the dominating teams that Bobby
Danny Hurley is putting together. And the sport needs coaching
personalities like this. Coach k is no longer in the league.
Roy Williams is no longer in the league, neither is
Jay Wright. You get the point. They need the face
and I think Danny Hurley is going to serve that purpose.
(02:20:35):
Coming up, Chris profests world of soccer. For first, we
go back to our guy to chef, Kevin Wired.
Speaker 3 (02:20:40):
With the last.
Speaker 10 (02:20:41):
Yeah, speaking of soccer, we do have the European Soccer
Tournament going on right now. Actually, we have the first
game of the day coming up at nine o'clock Eastern time.
But the tournament is in full swing and yesterday we
saw some results. At Spain, getting three goals in the
first half, they blank Horatia three el Switzerland over Hungary
(02:21:01):
three to one. Italy beats Albania two to one. NHL
Stanley Cup Final, the Edmonton Oilers survive and force a
game five, although it was more than surviving in game
four as they beat Florida eight to one, but they
do survive at least in this series to force a
game five on Tuesday in Sunrise, as the Panthers still
(02:21:22):
had in the Stanley Cup Final three games to one,
but Connor McDavid his first career Stanley Cup Final goal
along with three assists a four point performance as Edmonton
does live to fight another day. In the College World Series,
a walk off home run by Kentucky Mitchell Daily hitting
the bomb for the Wildcats as they get by the
(02:21:43):
NC State wolf Pack in ten innings five to four.
The game between Texas A and M and Florida was
delayed by several hours because of rain, but eventually the
Aggies do win it early in the morning local time
in Omaha, beating Florida three to two. US opening Golfitz
Bryce into Shambeau in the lead by three strokes. He's
(02:22:05):
seven under four the tournament shot a third round sixty seven,
good for three hundred par on Saturday, so he's ahead
of Rory McElroy and Patrick Cantley also tied there at
second at four under par. In Major League Baseball, Dodgers
putcher Yoshi Nobo Yamamoto had to leave the game after
two innings because of triceps tightness, and it got worse
(02:22:28):
for LA as they fell to the Kansas City Royals
seven to two. The Astros fell to the Detroit Tigers
thirteen to five, as Justin Ferlander not getting the opportunity
to pitch against his old team as he was scratched
because of a sore neck comes over the Cardinals five
to one, Shota Imonaga getting seven innings of work in
(02:22:49):
as he's now seven to one in era of one
point eight nine. Mariners over the Rangers seven to five.
Mets win their fourth game in a row, beating the
Padres five to one, the Orioles over the Philly six
to two, and the game between the AA's and the
Minnesota Twins was rained out. NFL News. Bengals wide receiver
t Higgins signing its franchise tag. He will report to
(02:23:11):
camp for Cincinnati next month.
Speaker 2 (02:23:13):
Back to you, Ordy, my good stuff, Chef, appreciate it
all right, as your Kevin say, each week at this time, well,
it doesn't matter if there's games on or off the field,
there's always events, and we bring them to you through
Chris Prefet's World of Soccer.
Speaker 1 (02:23:31):
The greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drama him.
It's all here in this report from the World of Soccer.
Speaker 12 (02:23:51):
Finally, Bernie, after all these months, we finally made it
to the international schedule that actually matters. We're talking about
UWEIFA European Championship twenty twenty four or EUROS and the
Copa America for Conmo Bowl and Conker caf here twenty
twenty four. We haven't had as much time off as
usually four years between these tournaments, but you know, because
(02:24:13):
of COVID, a lot of that were played in twenty
twenty one, so teams coming back with a little less
time off than we anticipate, which means we just get
right straight at it. Euro is beginning this weekend. There's
already been a game played. We'll talk about that one
in a second and Copa here next weekend. Let's try
to preview both, and we're going to start with euros
(02:24:33):
European Championship is one of my favorite tournaments in the world.
It is phenomenal.
Speaker 1 (02:24:40):
It is like the World Cup, but on a much.
Speaker 12 (02:24:42):
Smaller scale, and already Germany is off to a flying
start five to one over Scotland the game on Friday.
Scotland had some buzz coming into this contest, but man,
they let Germany handle them effortlessly. Tony Cruz free to
deal damage all day long. All you had to do
was just leave him open and he gets an immaculate
ninety foot cross to Florian Wurtz gets the goals started.
(02:25:05):
It's the kind of teamwork machine we kind of expect
to see from Germany. It'd be interesting to see how
far they can go in a tournament where they haven't
had the same kind of success as been previous years.
Speaker 6 (02:25:15):
Now.
Speaker 12 (02:25:15):
Italy are the defending champions and they come in licking
a lot of wounds and it wasn't really even an
easy road for them to get here. A goalless draw
against Ukraine at the end of their qualification did get
them in, but it wasn't the proud way to go
in and they need to do some late stage homework
in the last few matches prior to that to get
(02:25:36):
the points to get in and to be honest, the
twenty twenty Championship for them is starting to feel more
and more bittersweet, and it was made more and more
bittersweet by missing out on the twenty twenty two.
Speaker 1 (02:25:50):
FIFA World Cup.
Speaker 12 (02:25:51):
It was made bittersweet by Roberto Mancini resigning a lot
of the old generations simply being lost, and by the
days as it goes by, that twenty twenty euro crown
feels just a little heavier, a little worse for wear,
because it just wasn't a prelude to a good Italian club. Now, however,
(02:26:12):
we've got Luciano Spiletti and unfortunately he's dealing with the
circus already. They've been spent the week in Italy arguing
with the press about some misinterpreted words from him about
a quote PlayStation ban unquote. But it's not the same
squad as before, and really this is an Italian team
that is lacking attacking options. They know, how longer have Varati,
(02:26:32):
they no longer have Insigne, They will have Jean Lucas
Scamaca nineteen goals this season for Adalanta, but he's only
scored for Italy one time so far. But this will
be a really good defensive squad. I just don't know
if that's really going to cut it in twenty twenty four.
And it's really tough for me as an Italian fan
(02:26:52):
to watch this and just kind of hold my breath
wondering what's going to go wrong. But my pick for
euro and I keep doing this and I regret it
every year though, is England. But here's the thing, if
not now, when for England. This England squad features a
wonderful midfield Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice. They have a resurgent
(02:27:13):
Harry Kane who was great in Germany this past year,
the phenomenal buyak Osaka sixteen goals for Arsenal. They came
so close in twenty twenty losing in that shootout to Italy.
Speaker 10 (02:27:24):
But each year England.
Speaker 12 (02:27:26):
Comes back more loaded, more stocked up, and much like
the World Cup, you have to wonder are they going
to screw this up or are they actually going to
bring it home? You just kind of hold your breath
wondering what's gonna happen. But still on paper, there the
best team, they're one of the favorites and they're my
pick for Euro twenty twenty four. Let's move over to
Copa America. It's going to start next week. There's always
(02:27:48):
this is a contest that always seems to come down
to Argentina and Brazil. Argentina the defending champions once again here.
This is probably Lionel Messi's final time with Argentina. I
don't know if he's going to be on the World
Cup squad one more time, but it's certainly going to
be the last Copa for one of the greatest players
we've ever seen. Brazil always a heavyweight in this, but
(02:28:10):
let's talk about the United States, who will be playing
along with several other concacaffeinations like Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama.
USA had a one to one draw against Brazil in
a friendly leading up to this tournament. It ended in
eleven game losing streak against Brazil for the USA, so
that's a good sign. But the week prior we had
(02:28:31):
a five to one loss to Colombia and it just
once again reinforces the problem with the United States. A massive, massive,
very inconsistent, and really it's kind of always been the
frustration watching a Greg bear Halter squad where you just
know they have the talent there, and they know they
have the talent to compete, but it just never really
(02:28:53):
seems to translate game to game, and you're just left
scratching your head wondering, why does this club, Why does
this team who can draw even with Brazil, one of
the greatest nations in the world at soccer, and then
lose five to one to Columbia earlier than that. It
never makes sense. And this is going to be the
USA playing on its home turf here in America, this
(02:29:14):
is where COPA will be, and it just keeps going
back months and months. You can look to the game
against Jamaica in March and the speech by Greg Berhalter
there as he's just trying to get his guys in
the United States to take all of these games seriously
if they are going to compete at COPA. By his
own admission, it seems to be in one year out
(02:29:36):
the other sometimes, which is terrifying to think about really,
because that's ultimately been the problem with the United States
has been this consistency and if I may, Bernie, where's
the buzz around the US men's team? The women always
get a lot of attention, Yes we know that, but like,
where is the buzz around this US men's team? This
is supposedly great generation. I have seen plenty of empty
(02:29:59):
stadiums fourteen USA. It is certainly not the kind of
fan turnout we used to get when it was Tim
Howard and Landon Donovan and Clinton Dempsey. It feels like
that fire under the fan base has just completely gone
out and nobody is really resonating with this current generation.
This squad is better than ever, and yet media attention
(02:30:20):
is nowhere near what it was just ten years ago
with that past generation. Nobody is really resonating with these
guys right now, And to be honest, can't really blame
them when we have these kind of consistency problems, because yes,
Christian Fulisich is better, and yes Giovanni Raina is better,
even though he keeps getting screwed out of a lot
of playing time no matter which your PP and club
(02:30:41):
he goes to. But it's really hard when you just
see these guys out there with a lack of fire
game to game, you want them to fight like dogs
like Clint Dempsey did, and I just I don't think
that's there right now, and that's ultimately ultimately going to
hurt them in Copa for me. Me though, on Copa,
my favorite, my favorite is on Brazil Vensius Junior, Rodrigo.
(02:31:04):
They've had some fantastic players here from the club side
of things, and expect again another wonderful outing from Venisius Junior.
I'm kind of hoping good things from this Brazil squad here,
especially as Argentina starts to show its age. I think
if we're just talking about the United States, you just
hope to see them in the knockout round and come
(02:31:24):
out of their group, which should be easy for them.
They're playing Bolivia, Panama and Uruguay, but Panama has always
been trouble for the United States for whatever reason, and
Uruguay is no slouch. That's it for me, Bernie, enjoy Copa,
Enjoy Euros. We've got plenty to talk about next time
on the World of Soccer.
Speaker 2 (02:31:42):
All right, good stuff, Chris, and things are going to
really heat up here as we trend toward the Paris
Olympics on July twenty sixth, coming up, Well, no, Joy
Chestnut will not be competing apparently, at least as it
stands today in the July fourth Nathan's Hot Dog Geting Contest.
(02:32:03):
But Netflix wastes no time and put in together the
all time arrivalry the two who haven't been on the
same stage since two thousand and nine. Yep, Netflix is
getting into the competitive eating business. And I'm not talking
about Mike Tyson biting Jake Paul's ear. Yes, Netflix has
come up with something, and frankly, in my opinion, I
(02:32:24):
think it's a genius. Well share it coming up. I'm
Bernie Frodder. We're coming to live from the Las Vegas
Fox Sports Radio tirect dot Com studios. Keep it locked
listening with the Bernie Frauder Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (02:32:38):
Ah.
Speaker 2 (02:32:38):
Yes, the classic tones of Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul.
Speaker 3 (02:32:43):
We are wrapping it up on the Bernie Fraudle Show.
Speaker 2 (02:32:45):
We're coming to live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports
Radio Tiret dot Com Studios. Before I go any further,
I want to thank my broadcast team back in Los Angeles.
They'd be able to be since eleven pm Pacific on
Saturday night. Of course, Mark Ramsey our technical producer, turning
all the dolls, keeping us glued together, coming up with
the good names on what my name, and hitting all
(02:33:06):
the drops. Great job is always, Mark running a tight ship. Brie,
outstanding jobs always. You've done a couple of shows with
me now and really on your game.
Speaker 3 (02:33:17):
Great stuff.
Speaker 2 (02:33:18):
And of course the chef Kevin Wirrett, been with me
for a while on the updates. And of course his
performance at one thirty Pacific every Friday, every Saturday morning.
Check that every Saturday night heading into Sunday morning is not.
Speaker 3 (02:33:31):
To be missed.
Speaker 2 (02:33:31):
So Bree, Mark and chef, outstanding job tonight top to bottom,
all right, you heard Saturday. And so Joe Joe Joe
Chestnut is not going to be in the participating in
this year's July fourth Nathan's competition, at least that's as
it stands right now, because he got himself a sponsorship
with plant eating Hot Plant.
Speaker 3 (02:33:53):
No plants don't eat hot talks. This is a plant
based hot dog. All right.
Speaker 2 (02:33:56):
We talked about a Friday night. We don't need to
go down that road. You already know what happens. It
looks like now that Nathan's is just simply not going
to allow to participate. They liking to Michael Jordan. They
likned it to Michael Jordan having a sponsorship with Nike,
which he did, and then approaching Nike and saying, hey,
you know, I really like my sponsorship, but I like
to do Adidas as well.
Speaker 3 (02:34:17):
It's not gonna work.
Speaker 2 (02:34:18):
So how can you have a Nathan's Hot Dog Eating
Contest without Joey Chestnum. I guess we're gonna find out.
I guess we're gonna find out two weeks from next Thursday.
But in the meantime to look now, Netflix is getting
into the competitive eating business. Netflix will host a live
(02:34:40):
streaming event on Labor Day, September two, featuring the two
official legends of Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, Joey Chestnut
and Takiro Kobayashi. I bet you didn't know his first
name is Takiro, right, You just know him as Kobayashi.
The live special will be called Yes, Chestnut Versus Kobayashi
(02:35:03):
Unfinished Beef. Now, we don't know where it's going to
be held, we don't know the specific timing, still all
to be determined. But the one thing that Netflix has determined,
in addition to the two combatants for all the marbles.
The hot dogs will be all beef hot dogs.
Speaker 3 (02:35:19):
They will not be.
Speaker 2 (02:35:22):
You know, the plant based all right, in case you
missed it, and I don't think you did. These are
two legendary competitive eaters. They battle each other for years
in the annual Nathan's Contest, but it's been a minute.
The last time they competed head to head was in
two thousand and nine, when Chestnut beat Kobayashi in a
five hot dog sudden death eat off. Now Chestnut has
(02:35:44):
gone on to be a sixteen time Nathan's winner, including
the last eight years, but again not allowed to participate
this year after he inked a sponsorship agreement with Impossible Foods,
which recently released a plant based dog plant based hot dog.
So Chestnut's absence from the event I believe will have
an impact on the ratings because ESPN has had an exclusive.
(02:36:08):
That's how you know popular this event has been. I mean,
thirty thousand people attend it and millions watch it, and
you can bet on it. You can bet on it.
There's lots of ways to bet on it. And I
always talk about it. You know, a lot of times
I'll do a show that people take time off. I'll
do a show the night before July fourth, or even
my show the week before. I'll tell about the ways
(02:36:30):
you can bet on it and what the betting odds.
Speaker 3 (02:36:32):
Are.
Speaker 2 (02:36:32):
By the way, Joey Chestnut holds the record for most
hot talks consumed in ten minutes seventy six. It's one
of the things you can bet on every year. Will
he break a record? Will he over under be this
or that? And depending if it's cold or if it's hot,
believe it or not, these things matter anyway. Kobayashi was
talked about by Joey Chestnut in a recent statement. He said, quote,
(02:36:52):
through all my years of competition and competitive eating, Kobayashi
stands out.
Speaker 3 (02:36:56):
He's my fiercest rival.
Speaker 2 (02:36:58):
Competing against Kobayashi pushed me to be so much better.
I know that fans have waited a long time for
another chapter of our rivalry, and I can't wait for
our massive showdown live on Netflix. It's time to give
the people what they want. You know, you can scoff
with that, but I actually do think people kind of
want this all right. Kobayashi. By the way, no slouch.
(02:37:18):
Six times Nathan's winner. They did a thirty for thirty
on his life. It's really good back on I think
twenty eight nineteen arguably the first competitive lead to basically
become an international celebrity. In the two thousand and one contest,
Kobayashi had fifty hot dogs in twelve minutes, which seem
like astronomical Now they're up to seventy six. He had
a contact dispute as well with Major League Eating and
(02:37:39):
they prevented him from returning to the competition.
Speaker 3 (02:37:41):
Major League Eating is.
Speaker 2 (02:37:42):
The organization that oversees Nathan's and the contest. So Netflix
has managed to get Kobayashi out of retirement for one
last for one last challenge, and Kobyashi is up fort
He says, retiring for me will only have after I
take him down one more time. So what do you
want to bet? There's maybe even a rematch. I don't know,
(02:38:05):
but for sure there is going to be a match.
You can bet on it back on the Airways next
Friday at eleven. In the meantime, keep it locked, Andy Ferman,
the biggest thing to come out of Cincinnati since Unipol
Bill Near Armstrong
