(00:25):
way tired buying should be absolute jam Pack Show tonight,
we're gonna get to it all, of course, across the board,
multiple subjects, and of course we've got brand new Fool
what my Name to? And Pacific more arousing editions of that,
but we began with the obvious. You know, there's an
(00:48):
old story recently. I understand that Lebron James was walking
down the beach pondering life, and he came across a
genie in a bottle and easy rub the bottle. A
genie came out and Lebron says, do I get three wishes?
And the genie says, no, I'm god, I'm not a genie,
(01:10):
but you only get one wish, but it can be
anything you want. And Lebron said, well, you know what
I'd like to take a trip to Hawaii. But I
thought it might be nice if we could somehow drive
to Hawaii. That'd be so cool. Maybe you could construct
a highway from California to Hawaii. And God says, oh,
my goodness, that's a tough ask. I don't know if
(01:32):
even I could do that. Is there anything else, anything
else I could do for you? And Lebron says, could
you maybe turn Bronni into a legitimate NBA player? And
God looked at Lebron and says, do you want that
highway in two lanes or four lanes?
Speaker 3 (01:54):
You know?
Speaker 2 (01:54):
The dictionary defiance. Curiosity is a strong desire to.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
Learn or know something.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
I certainly consider myself a very curious person, and I
consider myself intellectually curious.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Let's go back to two thousand and three March.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
We heard about the hype surrounding this young man in
Ohio named Lebron James. I became curious. I was with
CBS Radio ninety seven one in Detroit at the time.
Took a drive down to Saint Vincent Mary St. Vincent
Saint Mary High School to see a game, and I did,
and I saw Lebron James.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Play in person. When he was eighteen years old, and the.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Curiosity was satisfied. I looked at him and I said,
my goodness, he's got an NBA body, he's got an
NFL body. He's got superb handles, he's got guard handles,
he has tremendous court sense. He seemed very mature and unselfish.
He probably could have scored seventy five points that night,
but he didn't. He set up his teammates, played basketball
(02:54):
within the framework of the way basketball should be played,
as it is in back the team game.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
I said to myself, is he projectable? You bet?
Speaker 2 (03:04):
You could put this guy in an NBA game right now.
And sure enough, seven months later, he was in an
NBA game. By the way, about three months later, he
played in his first Summer League game fourteen point seven,
fourteen points, seven rebounds, seven points, and he very much
looked a part hold that thought. I moved to Las
(03:25):
Vegas in February twenty ten, and a year before, young
man by the name of Bryce Harper, sixteen year old
Bryce Harper was on the cover of Sports Illustrated and
I was kind of bored one week and I had
just moved here. Turned out, Bryce Harper seventeen year old
Bryce Harper, should have been a senior in high school
playing for the college at Southern Nevada had a double header.
(03:45):
I said, I gotta see this. I drove out there.
Bryce Harper was nine for twelve in the double header
with three home runs. Sports Illustrated also happened to be
there that day. Was he projectable?
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Very much? So?
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Obviously, fourteen years later you see the kind of career
that Bryce Harper is having. By twenty twelve, I was
in my second year of doing Rebel Extra, a pre
and postgame show for UNLV run of Rebel Basketball began
A gentleman on our team by the name of Anthony Bennett,
a highly highly recruited player out of Canada and was
(04:17):
projected to be a very high draft choice. Anthony Bennett
was a pretty decent college player great, no decent, yes,
still seemingly good enough to be a draft choice. He
was clearly going to be a one and done. Anthony
Bennett was a one undone.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
He was the number one.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Pick overall, and in common parlance, he's referred to as
the biggest bust in the history of the NBA. I'm
repeating what I was told. I don't like to put
those kind of monikers on people. It's like picking up
your least favorite Noodlan played a spaghetti but he did
not succeed as an NBA player. And then looking back,
(04:56):
you could ask yourself, well, were there red flags?
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Well? I thought they were. I mean I.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Saw courtside games against Air Force where he got lost
on backdoor cuts, not one or two times, six times.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
He had great difficulty defending.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
He had some athleticism, but not elite athleticism, and his
game never came close to translating to the NBA. And
there were red flags. I saw them, and people wrote
about them much later. It turned out he was undersized
as a power forward, but not quick enough to.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Be a small forward.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
And you know, although other red flags included allegations like
his work ethic wasn't great, then we found out he
had sleep apnea and asthma, and many of those things
didn't start circulating till after he was drafted. But the
moral of the story is he left clues right away.
(05:54):
I covered that Summer League. I started covering the Summer
League in twenty ten here in Las Vegas. I didn't
cover it last year. I've actually lost interest in covering
the Summer League. But you put him on I saw you.
I saw Anthony Bennett in a Summer League game, and
he just looked like another dude on the floor. That's
a problem. The Summer League is maybe twenty percent of
(06:17):
a real NBA game. So let's fast forward to earlier today.
I also became curious. I wasn't at the game in person,
but I certainly watched it on TV because this whole
charade has to do with appeasing. The insecurities are appeasing,
(06:39):
you know, the desires of an insecure man. It's all
about Lebron wanting his son not only just be the NBA,
but to be drafted into the NBA. I mean, Ben
Wallace was a Hall of Famer never drafted. I can
give you a bunch of guys that were great players,
never drafted, that had great careers.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
By the way, you.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Never know you get a fifty fifth manager. You know,
we was drafted fifty seven. Isaiah Thomas, not the original
Isaiah Thomas, the one who chipped his tooth of few
years ago playing for the Knicks.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
He was drafted like fifty eighth. You might get a
diamond in the rough if you want, you know, Bronni
to be an NBA player, You bring him in the camp,
find work him out, and you decide whether or not
you think he can help you.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Maybe you can, maybe you think he can. But the
minute you wanted him draft to change the dynamics. So
I was curious as to what I would see, just like.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
I was with Lebron in twenty oh three, Bryce Harper
in twenty ten, and Anthony Bennett.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
I want to know who is he? Because you have
there are varying reports was you know? There are allegations
that he was the third or fourth best player out
of his high school team, but that he did score
fifteen points in the McDonald's All Star Game. Lebron or
Bronni was second team All league in his high school league,
(07:57):
but he was regarded as a top thirty recruit. I
guess is he projectable? You can talk about the combine
and his numbers. I know Nick Wright was glowing about
Bronnie's combine numbers. Please don't tell me about combine numbers,
otherwise I'll have to insert Mike Mamula's name.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Philadelphia Eagles. The good people in Philadelphia.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
I know you remember who Mike Mamula was and if
you don't google him, he had combine numbers through the chart.
He should have been Reggie White and Lawrence Taylor times
four based on the combine numbers, but not so much so.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
The real question is what is this going to look
like a year down the road.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
I'm not going to invoke Bronnie James and his numbers today.
That doesn't really matter to me because Dalton Connect didn't
necessarily have good numbers either. But as I observe Bronnie
James through the prism of perhaps what a scout might
look for, and oh, biay, if you look at his
(09:01):
performance overall, and let's just pretend his name wasn't Bronnie James.
Let's say it was Eddie Gazinski and he happened to
be on the floor and you asked, what did he
look like today?
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Well? Fairly uneventful, underwhelming, kind of a quiet performance, quite honestly.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
And this is against fringe NBA players looking to get
a job. If you're a scout, the first thing you
do is survey a players body type. You know what
to look for in a player's body, and you try
to recognize the positives and negatives of what is going
to translate to the NBA. That's what I did with
(09:42):
lebron Senior back in two thousand and three. He very
much looked projectable at a couple of positions. First of all,
what position do we project Bronnie at in the NBA?
He clearly does not look quick enough as a point guard.
To me, He's got okay handles, he's got terrific courts sense,
he's a good passer. Every time he got the ball
(10:02):
in his hand, it was like a hot potato.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
But I don't think.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
He's prolific enough at this stage of development to become
a shooting guard in the NBA. I mean, I saw
Devin Booker on Donovan Mitchell and a lot of guys
come through there that just look like men against boys.
Brownie was nowhere near that. And you're telling me if
you think he can evolve into that in the next year. Okay,
let's wait and see. But you want to be able
to see a player and get a good idea of
(10:27):
his measurables. That's a key skill for evaluating talent.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Okay, his positional size, you tell me, well, first of all,
what is he's He's sixty four six one sixty two,
his length, his hands, his overall body type.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
What position do you project him at? Because I sure
as hell don't know what translatable skills for his position.
Did you see today that would relate and you know,
be able to observe him on an NBA floor a
year from now, helping an NBA team actually win games,
win meaningful games.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
What positionuill he play? What's his versatility? Versatility is extremely
important in today's NBA. Can lebron check that Bronni defend
multiple positions because a lot of times in the NBA,
a player's position is usually determined by who he can defend.
So you saw the numbers, We don't need to belabor that.
(11:23):
All right.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
He gets to play against Sunday against Golden State, and
he'll make his Las Vegas debut here next Friday. I
think he's a heady player. He's been well schooled, he's
been well coached. I don't see an NBA player. I
don't know if I'll ever see an NBA player. He's
going to get to play in the NBA, but he's
not going to come upon the scene like his dad did,
(11:47):
certainly or certainly like Bryce Harper did. And my concern
is when I saw Anthony Bennett get on the floor
against NBA players, fringe NBA players in twenty twelve and
look highly pedestrian, nothing special, blend it in, you never
know he was a high draft choice. I saw the
(12:08):
same thing with Bronnie today. He just his name is
Bronnie James, and that's why you look at him, and
that's why you watch him. And he seems like a
likable young man, and he seems like a dignified young
man and this is really important to his dad. And
I'm okay with that because there are plenty of parents
out there that live vikes through their kids, and Lebron
(12:28):
is doing that. And if the day comes and it
sre seems like it's likely to happen, at least once
that and Bronni are on the floor at the same time,
I'll cheer.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
It'll be cool. It won't excite me, it won't move me.
I'll just give myself.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Well, look, and you want to call it nepotism, of course,
it is the highest order, but I don't care. I
don't care because it's not whether or not nepotism can
open the door for you and perhaps allow you to
you know, jump the line. It's what are you gonna
do when you go through the door to earn your
keep when you're already there. That's going to be the
question that is ultimately going to be the decider as
(13:05):
to whether or not his whole thing was some big
Fugesi charade and a bad joke, or maybe we're looking
at the second coming. We got a year to figure
this out. Bronni turns twenty here in a couple of months.
By the time Lebron was twenty, he was taking over
certain NBA games. Yes, I'm going to compare him to
his dad, because Lebron told us to earlier of the year.
(13:27):
He said he could help us. Right now with the Lakers,
he says these things. All right, enough about Bronie. I
want to bring in the crew. I want to see
if what they saw matched what I saw, because I
think there are red flags, not that they can't be fixed,
but you still have to do it. I'm tired of
being force fed Bronnie James and what he might be someday.
(13:50):
Don't tell me about the labor pains, show me the baby.
Let's have a little roundtable discussion coming up, because I'm
giving you what I believe is an object the viewpoint.
I'm not rooting for him to fail. I'm not rooting
for him to succeed. I don't care. I genuinely do
not care. However, this means so much to Lebron to
(14:11):
play an NBA game with this son, whether he's really
good enough or not, then I'm okay with it.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
Man.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
There's an unwritten rule that if you're born and you
grow up, and you become the all time leading scorer
in the NBA, and you win four championships with three
different franchises, and you are considered by the Lakers to
be a cash cow, and they dearly want you byither
side whether they win, lose, or draw, and you have
(14:40):
become this.
Speaker 3 (14:41):
Self proclaimed iconic player.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
I'm not notwithstanding the fact that you are an all
time leading scorer.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
But I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
I saw Jordan courtside, I saw Bird court side, I
saw a magic court side.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
There was an era and.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
A panache and a savoylfare that those players had that
Lebron will never have. But Lebron does have the hardware,
and he does have numbers, and he does have power,
and he's using it. I've got no problem with that,
let's just see what might happen a year from now
when this is starting to be fully cooked. Hi, Bernie Frattle,

we are coming to you live from the Tirek dot
Com studios here in Las Vegas.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
Just getting started.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
We'll take you up to three am Pacific, six am Eastern.
Naturally we're talking Bronni James. Why wouldn't we be? And
before I turn it over to Shay, you heard my
opening monologue and my thoughts and the curiosity I am
holding as I observe his ability to be projectable as
(16:31):
a legitimate NBA player. Shay, you might get a kick
out of this. I said, I wasn't going to go
into the numbers that I'm not. I'm not gonna hold
those against him today. But you could actually bet Bronnie
James props for the summer League debut at bet MGM.
The first prop, would he scored ten points? Is even money?
He would have lost that? Would he make two three
(16:52):
pointers one hundred dollars? Would have brought back one hundred
and thirty five. Obviously that didn't happen. Would he record
six assists that was plus one seventy five, meaning one
hundred dollars or brought back one seventy five.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
Would he record for rebounds? You'd have gone er for.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
Four if you'd bet all four Bronnie James, props, but
I digress, Shait. We've talked a lot of basketball. I
know you went to Arizona State, you follow the game,
you're student of the game. You really impressed me the net.
We talked about Headache Smith and the whole point shaving scandal,
so I know you pay attention. I want to hear
(17:29):
your thoughts. You heard my monologue. You may agree, you
may disagree, you may have some additional thoughts, but overall,
impressions are big. We form impressions about people, by the way,
by what they show us. What did you see today
from Bronnie James.
Speaker 7 (17:44):
Yeah, So, I mean, I'm a Laker fan myself. I
grew up in Los Angeles, so I mean, I've always
been very optimistic about Brownie. So I unfortunately I was out,
so I wasn't able to watch the game, but like
during it, but I watched all the highlights. I read
a ton of I read the game scripts and I
basically just going through it all.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
But it.
Speaker 7 (18:04):
The highlights that I did see if Ronnie obviously were
picked out and he looked like an NBA player, and
just those small amount of highlights.
Speaker 6 (18:11):
But when.
Speaker 7 (18:13):
Game exact exactly it's it's not an NBA game, like
That's that's the point I wanted to get to, where
it it's as if like because Dalton Neck didn't like
he had twelve points, but he went three for twelve
shooting like, and I'm happy you didn't bring up the
numbers either because in the end, it's it's a summer
league game. It's not necessarily what we'll see in the season,
(18:34):
and I'm not sure we'll even see him in the season,
but it it it kind of just made me a
little bit more i don't know, not optimistic, but a
little bit more just like, okay, the fact that he
doesn't look like an absolute like like absolutely lost kind
(18:55):
of made me feel a little bit better.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
Just basics off some some selected cherry picked highlights as
supposed to watch in the game live.
Speaker 6 (19:04):
In the twenty two minutes exactly that's my want.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
To So you might want to do, because we're going
to continue this, what you might want to do is
watch the game to mo if you can, or at
least maybe recorded, because I'd like you to watch some things.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
Here's a kid who's six foot two.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
But they don't he doesn't bring the ball up to
court Okay, he's a point guard size apparently based on
the offense I saw and what they put on the floor,
the Lakers don't see him as a main facilitator, and
yet he's six to two. But he's not a main
facilitator in a summer league game, soul, where do you
see him fitting in a really NBA games?
Speaker 6 (19:40):
That's the thing. I didn't see him like.
Speaker 7 (19:42):
I was comfortable with the fact that he looked alright,
but when it like during a summer league game, don't
get me wrong, Like he didn't look all right at all.
He just looked like he was kind of a zero.
He reminded me of a zero on the court, and
a zero is basically someone that they're going through the motions.
They're putting shots up that kind of look good, but
some of them are not going in, some of them
aren't doing the right things. But it's it's more of
(20:05):
just when it comes like, because you can't correlate to
an NBA game at all, Like you don't know what's
going to happen. So I do want to go through
and watch it myself, the entire game because nitpicking the
highlights that I did see and the ones that I
didn't see. I saw him absolutely get pieced in the
first six minutes, and like that was a big thing
over Yeah, exactly, Like that was a big thing that
was going around.
Speaker 6 (20:25):
But it it.
Speaker 7 (20:28):
The biggest thing with this game is it didn't add
to my optimism and it didn't take away from my
optimism effact.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
All that thought.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
So I watched the game intently through the eyes of
a scout, and I watched him away from the ball,
watched him move without the ball. And again, I'm not
going to you know, Dalton connect he had twelve points
when he was three or twelve, Brownie was two for nine.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
That doesn't matter to me. I can.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
I can evaluate a baseball player. He might strake out,
but I might say he was not overmatched that at bat.
He just okay, it's it's a game of inches and
this kid could compete. Jury is very much out. So
let me ask you a question. In the limited cherry
pick tighlights, you saw, name the one thing you really
love about his game?
Speaker 7 (21:07):
The one thing I really love about his game. He
doesn't act like he's like think about this. Every one
was talking about him. Everyone was basically saying all these
things about him, Labron's son, blah blah, blah blah blah.
It didn't correlate with his game, Like I didn't think, oh,
this guy was banning tall like he went out he tried.
That was like, which sucks to say because this is
(21:29):
the NBA. Going out and trying is not at all
what I want. But the thing that I liked about
his game is I felt like he did leave that
at the door, and it didn't seem like that's what
affected him.
Speaker 6 (21:39):
It was just being new to the game, like being a.
Speaker 3 (21:41):
Real good, respectful kid. I don't think I'm a huge
d on Sanders fans, but his sons won't shut up.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
Exactly, always run in their mouth. That's not that's not
Bronnie's nature. He seems like a really well grounded, mature
young man. So he yets and it gets a good observation.
Speaker 6 (21:56):
And it correlated to the court. You could see it
on the court.
Speaker 7 (21:58):
You could see that he wasn't necessarily like pouting. He
wasn't necessarily like giving up. Giving up isn't the thing
I want to say, because there's definitely moments where you
could see he was demotivated, but it was it was
more of just like this is a rookie that's struggling,
and it's not because he doesn't have what it takes.
(22:20):
Because I definitely do think that Bronni in the long
run has a lot of potential. I think a lot
of people were tough on him, got usc bringing up
his numbers and all that. I mean, he just came
from a cardiac, like literally just had a cardiac orres.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
He wasn't good to have big numbers in high school though,
either that was well before his cardiac.
Speaker 6 (22:37):
At Sierra knyon he didn't.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
Have big numbers.
Speaker 7 (22:39):
Yeah, well Sierrah Canyon second, Yeah, I understand that, but
Sierah Canyon also had the number one prospect and number
three prospect and the number four projects.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
And none of those guys were drafted by the Lakers.
Speaker 6 (22:50):
You are right about that, but.
Speaker 2 (22:52):
I will give Ronnie credit. He did score fifteen points
in the McDonald's game. So that's my point. Who are
we seeing? And I'll shay you know about the NBA.
Do you remember a kid that was drafted by the
Memphis Grizzlies about ten twelve years ago, Josh Selby. He
was named co MVP of the Summer League. He it
was like twenty five points a game. He only played
a total of thirty five games in his entire NBA career,
(23:14):
So the summer League is not a predictor of how
you're going to do in the future. But I don't
know anybody who didn't come into the Summer League and
do well or not do well, and all of a
sudden wake up and become this tremendous NBA player. So
you know, we have to give this a full year.
(23:35):
But I have to see something that's projectable. I have
to see something I can really hang my hat on,
and I'm struggling to find that right now.
Speaker 6 (23:41):
No, I completely agree.
Speaker 7 (23:42):
Okay, So I'm the only reason I'm optimistic, to be honest,
just because I want it to work.
Speaker 6 (23:48):
I genuinely want it to work.
Speaker 7 (23:49):
Sure, just because I mean, in the end, today we
found out that the Lakers are going to be the
only team in the entire NBA to not make any moves.
It's kind of something we're not doubly downing on it,
but it's like almost like this is this is what
it's at, and this is what we have to deal
with as a Laker fan. So it's it's where I'm
coming from is from the perspective of please work, like
I really want this to work. But when when when
(24:12):
someone from an outside perspective, which is you, which is
kind of bringing me back to my grounded position of
what like necessarily why and and why did we do this?
And this was the game where I hoped to see
where which is what you're saying, we need to see
something like why he could be an NBA player, why
he could play. This was the game where I would
(24:34):
have hoped to see something, but it necessarily I didn't
see it. But at the same time, it didn't take
away from the fact that he isn't necessarily not going
to be an NBA player, Like I could definitely see
some moments of him being able to be maybe even
a six man who knows a good a good piece
off the bench, and who knows a year's time, I
(24:55):
don't know how much he can grow. But I definitely
didn't see, oh, this is the next coming of Lebron
in the nitpick highlights that I did see.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
Fair enough try to you know, he'll play I think
two more games in California and then he's guaranteed at
least four games here in Las Vegas, depending against the
Lakers advance to the playoff round here, so you're gonna
get see him four and he's gonna get a lot
of minutes. They have to Okay, they have to take
this investment and try to get some return.
Speaker 3 (25:24):
So let's keep an open mind.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
I don't blame you for wanting to be optimistic, and listen,
if you really want to be optimistic the later the
Lakers won forty seven games last year with the same roster,
they're gonna run it back. They ran into Denver, the
one team they can't beat, But what's to say they
might not have beaten another team and gotten to, you know,
later in the playoffs, which is about the most optimistic
(25:46):
I think the big thing and this is off subject
real quickly, che you better hope that Lebron can play
seventy six games next year, in Anthony Davis can play
seventy three, because that was an excellent effort by both
of them last year to be on the floor for
that amount of games, and you're gonna need both of
those guys for a lot of games next year. I mean,
(26:06):
we'll talk about this with Mark Mendine at the top
of the hour, but man, I'm telling you this Western
Conference is really really getting crowded.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
Right, good stuff, Shay, we'll catch up later in the show.
Coming up.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
You keep hearing this term the NBA's second apron. What's
that like if you eat too many hot dogs? No,
I will tell you how the second apron, how it
affects the latest collective bargaining agreement, how it impacts the
salary cap, and how it will affect teams spending for
teams that go over this salary cap. And I'll bring
this up with Mark. The Lakers blanked. I'll always be curious.
(26:40):
DeMar de Rozan got a three year deal seventy four million.
It's about twenty five million a year. But if Lebron
would have taken the pay cut he said he was
gonna take, and instead of making fifty two million, said
I'll tell you what, I'll do it for twenty seven million.
Let's bring in DeMar DeRozan might have DeMar DeRozan wanted
to be a Laker. Maybe he didn't want to be
a Laker in the first place, so it would have
been moot. But I always thought Lebron's offered to take
(27:01):
a pay cut was moot as well.
Speaker 3 (27:02):
Did it happen. Well, it didn't, all right.
Speaker 2 (27:04):
One of the biggest changes in the NBA's new Collective
Bargaining Agreement is the introduction of this thing called the
second Apron. You keep hearing about it, but not sure
if anybody is taking the time to explain it, which
is exactly what I am going to do right now. See,
the second Apron was designed to make the penalties much
(27:25):
more punishing for teams that spend way above the luxury tax.
What they want to do, what the NBA wants to do, theoretically,
is shrink the gap between all the big spending teams
and the small market teams when it comes to building
your roster. So let's start at the beginning. How much
is the salary cap, the luxury tax, the first apron
(27:46):
and the second apron in twenty three to twenty four
This season, we just ended the salary caps one hundred
and thirty six man. The luxury tax is one hundred
and sixty five man. These are the thresholds. The first
apron starts at one hundred and seventy million, and the
second apron, the new thing, starts at one hundred and
eighty two point five million.
Speaker 3 (28:05):
Now, what's the salary cap.
Speaker 2 (28:07):
All right, I know this is like Eddie Murphy in
trading places like a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich. He
stares at the camera like, what's wrong with you?
Speaker 3 (28:15):
Man?
Speaker 2 (28:15):
But let's let's set this. Let's set this up properly.
The salary cap is the amount of money that every
team has available to spend as they construct the roster.
Teams below the one hundred and thirty six million dollars
threshold will they create the cap room that they can
spend on incoming free agents. But teams to go over
(28:37):
the salary cap by using cap as exceptions. Remember they
created the Larry Bird rule many many years ago. Right,
So how can you go over your salary cap? Well,
let's say you've got a player on your roster that
if you he's already been on your roster, you don't
want to lose him.
Speaker 3 (28:54):
But you know you can't go over the salary cap.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
Well, you can by using a cap except if the
player has already been on the roster. That gives you
a luxury tax limit of up to one hundred and
sixty five million. I think it's pretty generous. So you
want to take care of your hometown guys. So it
doesn't go elsewhere, but you go over the salary cap.
But you want to try to stay under the luxury
(29:17):
tax line of one hundred and sixty five million. That's
not always possible. So penalties begin at that luxury tax line.
They're basically fines, financial fines, and the NBA takes that
money and they distributed to the non tax paying teams.
Speaker 3 (29:35):
At the end of the year.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
However, teams still go further into the tax and they
approach the apron. This is where roster building penalties are
added in. So you've now got the first apron at
one hundred and seventy two million, you've gone over the
salary cap at one thirty six, you've signed your hometown talent.
You've gone over one sixty five. Matter of fact, you splurged.
(29:57):
You went over the first apron of one hund than
seventy two million. What are the penalties? Very simple, when
you hit that first apron at bucks seventy two. At
this point there are restrictions. Teams cannot acquire a player
and a sign a trade if that player keeps them
above the apron. Teams also cannot sign a player that's
(30:19):
been waived during the regular season if their salary was
over the twelve million dollar mid level exception. Also, matching
a salary in trades must be within one hundred and
ten percent rather than the one hundred and twenty five
percent for teams that are not above the apron.
Speaker 3 (30:39):
So those are penalties now you get into the second apron.
To get into the second apron, you have to clear
one hundred and eighty two point five million in your
roster salary cumulatively, and some teams do it.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
Now an additional penalty is added when you cross the
second apron. There is no access to the million dollar
taxpayer mid level exception. So starting at the end of
this last season, they're The NBA is now adding even
more restrictions to the second apron, which will take place
starting next season. Teams cannot use a trade exception generated
(31:17):
by aggregating the salaries of multiple players, which was a
common practice before. Teams cannot include cash in a trade.
This is if you go over the second apron. Starting
next year, teams and also they cannot use a trade
exception generated in a prior year. And you ever see
those trades where you'll see this, some team will get
(31:38):
a haul they'll get a bunch of players or checked out.
They get a bunch of draft choice, and you say, wow,
they traded their first round draft choice in twenty thirty two.
My god, that's well. That happens. They'll package first round
draft choices. But if you are over the apron, a
first round pick that is seven years out is not frozen.
Speaker 3 (31:56):
You are not allowed to trade that right.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
And by the way, a team's first round pick is
moved to the end of the first round if you
remain in the second apron for three out of five seasons.
So these penalties are quite a bit more strict than
under the old CBA. What this is trying to do
is limit owners with deep pockets who could go well
(32:21):
into the luxury tax as long as they were willing
to pay. Now, teams who enter the second apron are
going to be hamstrung quite a bit more difficulty adding
any sort of new, viable star type talent.
Speaker 3 (32:35):
Via trades or free agent acquisitions.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
So from now on, when you hear the term second apron,
which is why you're hearing teams also trying to avoid it,
now you'll know why, and you'll also know what happens
if they in fact, don't avoid the second apron.
Speaker 3 (32:52):
Yep, there you have it.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
You know, I gotta do this because speaking of money,
speaking of honey flowing in sports, people lack like this
is a new thing. Everybody makes a big deal out
of Bobby Benia Day, which was it's actually July first
every year, and I know why because the Mets will
loathe the fact that Bobby Bania will receive one point
two million in annual payment from the Mets all the
(33:18):
way until twenty thirty five. And it's laughable because this
this commenced in two thousand, so for thirty five straight years.
But guess what, Bobby Benea ain't the only guy that's
getting paid, So he's got his own day. But I'll
share with you some other players on the list. You
might get a kick out of it. I'm Bernie Fradder.
(33:39):
We all come in your life from the Las Vegas
Fox Sports Radio tyrec dot com studios.
Speaker 3 (33:44):
Keep it locked right here. You're listening to the Bernie
Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (33:48):
You don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (33:52):
All right back at the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Come to your live from me tyrack dot com. Studios
here in Las Vegas for a dive into Bobby Venia.
She had an additional thought about Brownie Shane.
Speaker 3 (34:05):
Your thoughts, Yeah, I.
Speaker 7 (34:06):
Just wanted to add on to the fact that why
I felt comfortable with him being on the being on
the floor, and why I thought he was comfortable being
on the floor because when there were those those quick
moments of just him having that fast break offer ends
he never second guessed himself when he was passing the ball.
He was very certain about everything he was doing, you
know what I mean, even though it didn't go in,
even though it didn't hit, he would do it one
(34:28):
hundred percent and he would never second guess. And there
were moments where it would go in or an assists,
like during that fast break where he had the steal,
where he would give that amazing bounced pass. Like it's
moments like that where I'm like, Okay, this is making
me feel a little bit better. But at the same time,
we don't know if it will correlate to the NBA
and this is just summer League, so who knows what
(34:49):
we'll see with Bronnie.
Speaker 6 (34:50):
But I'm just that's why I'm optimistic about him.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
Well, so your observations are right.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
He just played court sense and he was decisive with
the basketball times. We will see how that may or
may not translate when you get into a real NBA
game where the athleticism is five times different than in
the summer game, which is about twenty percent of an
NBA game, and you're competing against guys that are maybe
(35:18):
fringe players at best.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
But you know, let's let it again. We're gonna let
this play out.
Speaker 2 (35:24):
I am withholding full judgment for one year, but I
still will have opinions along the way. Okay, this past week,
Bobby Benia Day took place, and you look, salary deferment
is nothing new, and it's not going away. Did you
already forget shoheo tani?
Speaker 3 (35:42):
He's goett He.
Speaker 2 (35:43):
Got a six hundred and eighty million dollars deal and
it's basically almost all in deferrals, I mean Dodgers. He's
agreed to set aside sixty eight million dollars of a
seventy million dollars annual salary for ten years and maybe
you know, deferred that month later. But so Benia did
this back in two thousand. He structured this contract on
(36:06):
every July first, Bobby Minie is the recipient of one
point one to nine million dollars from the Mets. That
was the deferral structure they created back in two thousand
and he's got another what eleven years to go. But
he's not the only one they calls Bobby Benia David.
There are other guys. Did you know that Ken Griffy Junior.
(36:27):
He had a sixteen year deferral of fifty seven million
dollars from the Cincinnati Reds of all teams, and it
concludes finally this next year where he'll get a lump sum,
a three point six million dollar payment. Remember Manny Ramirez
man ram Manny Wood Manny also receives two million dollars
(36:53):
per year from the Red Sox as part of a
sixteen year, thirty two million dollar deferral that started back
in twenty ten and it will then until twenty twenty six.
And the Baltimore Oriols once had a semi power hitting
first baseman by the name of Chris Davis. He's getting
nine million dollars a year as part of deferrals because
(37:15):
he had a one hundred and sixty one million dollar
contract and he's got another forty million dollars due between
now and thirteen years from now, so you're not alone
Bobby Bania. By the way, Bobby Vania is now sixty
one years old, and not only the Mets paying him.
Remember Bobby Bania spent a minute with the Baltimore Orioles.
(37:37):
He got deferrals of five hundred thousand a year from
twenty twenty or check that from twenty oh four to
twenty twenty eight. So Bobby Bania, there's two Bobby Benia days,
one with the Oriols, one with the Mets, and he's
got four more years left with the Orioles and eleven
more years with the Mets. The way to double dip
(37:58):
Bobby now. Finally, Brett Saberhagen, not to be left in
the cold, also also benefiting from the Mets, made his
own deal starting in twenty oh four that Brett Saberhagen
will receive, has continued to receive and will receive through
twenty twenty eight, two hundred and fifty thousand dollars annually.
(38:21):
And that is all part of sort of like this
family of Bobby Bania Day recipients. So it's not just Bania,
Brett Saberhagen Chris Davis, Manny Davis or many Ramirez, Ken
Griffy Jr. Right on down the line. And by the way,
what's really funny is they're making Ellie D. Lacruz, one
(38:42):
of the best players in baseball, makes seven hundred grand
this year. Bobby Vanie is making more than him. He's
making more than Gunner hendersoning an anti volpe as well.
Speaker 3 (38:50):
So there you have it. We'll set this aside until
next July first, when Bobby Medea Day rears its head
again and everybody will get all excited to celebrate Bobby Day,
and I'll get all excited to say, well, he's not
the only one coming up Medina Magic. We talk NBA.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
Keep it locks The Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Well that's right, you heard the man. The Bernie Frattle

means only one thing.
Speaker 3 (39:44):
It's that time.
Speaker 2 (39:47):
Medina Medina Magic are Fox Sports Radio, NBA Googu. You
hear him all around the dial. Mark a very eventful week.
Lots of free agency signings. Of course, the summer League
has begun, as it were, not the Las Vegas Summer League,
but a summer league. And let's also not forget that
(40:09):
Team USA is training here in Las Vegas. You had
a chance to spend some time with there them today.
What are your takeaways?
Speaker 8 (40:17):
Well, burn in good shout with you is always this
is a coveyat That's not like we got to see practice.
They open when the time they open up, we only
see them, you know, shoot free throws and you know
see them mice or knee pads. You know, it's not
a lot, But I will I will say that Steve Cursa,
that Kawhi Leonard, he did everything in practice that included
(40:40):
some controlled scrimmaging. So I think that's a good sign
because he had all that bright knee inflammation at the
end of the Clippers regular season as well as that
playoff series against Dallas. Now, I think what's interesting with
Kawhi Leonard is that Lawrence frank At some of the
Clippers brass are there, and so I'm curious, is there's
(41:02):
going to be some delicate, you know, supervising where we
see Kawhi Leonard getting some load management treatment on TV
USA and like this this has all sorts of funny tentacles.
Because Steve Kerr is the coach, he should be able
to allocate minutes. But I do wonder if there's going
to be some feedback from the Copper organization on you know,
(41:27):
how many minutes he's allowed to play and all that.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
Yeah, that's a fair assertion, mark because he was basically
a non factor in the playoffs and he missed the
last two weeks of.
Speaker 3 (41:38):
The season as it were. So how does the Clippers
feel about that that he's all fresh as the days
you ready to go for the Olympics, but he couldn't
quite answer the bill when it mattered for the Clippers.
Speaker 8 (41:48):
Yeah, well, I think the Clippers and Kawhi Leonard when
he speaks sometime this week he'll say, Look, it just
has to do with help. When he's available, he'll play.
When he's not, he won't play. I think that this
can be a win win, you know. The historically a
lot of players always talk about how there's a benefit
of LAM for TVSA, either in the FOBA Games or
(42:11):
in the Olympic Games, and how there's a carryover into
the next season just as far as your conditioning and
your sharpness, and so that could happen to Kawhi. But
you know, I am kind of making light of the situation,
but I think the Clippers are right to be wanting to,
you know, peer over their peer over Steve's shoulder and
make sure that he doesn't get hurt again. But I
(42:33):
think that they are going to collaborate. Steve Curry is
good at doing that, so it's about doing what he
needs to do to win the game, but also make
sure he's on harm's way. The good thing is, as
Steve Kerr said, he has twelve Hall of Famers on
the roster, so it's not going to be that difficult
in making adjustments if Kawhi has to be playing on
(42:54):
a limited basis, but at least for first day of practice,
he didn't have any restrictions.
Speaker 3 (42:58):
Yeah, it's just looking. It's the optics.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
It's like the guy who goes and stick to work,
but he's at the company picnic that night crushing. So
by the way, I was able to get out of
mind Lebron to English Dictionary and I know there's this
rumor that he may come off the bench, and of
course Lebron said something to the media about, well, I'll
do whatever coach needs me to do translations than coming
off the bench on Lebron. Do you see any scenario
(43:22):
where Lebron does come off the bench.
Speaker 8 (43:24):
Or no, he's not coming off the bench. He started,
thank Steve Kerr. Steve Kerr that generally that no decisions
have been made with anything. He's going to be playing
different starting lineups first exped fishing games. Sorry, not different combinations.
But here's my educated guest, Uh, you can lock in Lebron, James,
(43:45):
Kevin Durant and Steph Curry as starters. So now it's
about Steve Kerr finding the last two starters and also
figuring out the rest of the rotation.
Speaker 2 (43:56):
Talking with Mark Mandina Medina Magic. You hear him every
Saturday night here with me at twelve minnight on the
Bernie Frattle Show. I, by the way, they're gonna pay
an exhibition gaming.
Speaker 3 (44:09):
It's Canada. Canada's got a nice roster. I do believe
obviously that.
Speaker 2 (44:16):
I would be surprised Mark if the USA team doesn't
prevail and win the gold.
Speaker 3 (44:23):
But I also.
Speaker 2 (44:24):
Maybe I gotta tell you, I am may be the minority,
but I want to get your thoughts. I think it's
going to be a rock fight to win the whole thing.
I don't think it's going to be you know, I
mean Germany, Serbia, France, Canada, Australia.
Speaker 3 (44:38):
They've all got guys.
Speaker 2 (44:39):
That can play, and so, you know, in the international
game always has a way of sort of you know,
narrowing the field. How shocked on a scale of one
to ten would you be if the team didn't win
the gold medal?
Speaker 8 (44:52):
Well, I want to be shocked, but it would be
a failure and a disappointment the US don't win the gold.
And I think that basically, ever since the redeem team
in O eight, the US fully understands that the international
you know, the battles global. It's not going to be
like ninety two Dream Team anymore. Where Charles barkleas you know,
(45:14):
openly says he doesn't know anyone on the end goal.
But they're in trouble. They can't do that anymore, you know.
Steve Kerr also even said today a practice like this
is not going to be how it was in ninety
two when Chuck Daeway and Michael Jordan was just golfing
like on game days, like they're they're having to do
a lot of work. But with all those caveats aside,
(45:38):
I fully expect the US to win because they have
their best guys and everyone is fully available. Now there
are going to be to your point, I think some
initial challenges about, you know, adapting to feed the rules,
and also just the fact that the US team never
has continuity because all the other national teams it's the
(46:00):
same core guys and they're familiar. You know, there might
be some familiarity with the NBA with one or two teammates,
but it's usually you know, they're playing, they're teaming up
against previous opponents. So I think in that case, especially
very early on, Steve Kerr suggested that he is going
to lean on Lebron James and Kevin Durant a lot
(46:24):
because they are his most experienced team USA players.
Speaker 2 (46:29):
I feel like Canada might possess or might pose the
biggest challenge based on how they looked in the Fever
World Cup. They got seven or eight NBA play They're
gonna have the NBA guys coming off the bench. I
mean it's not just Shay Gilgess, Alexander and Jamal Marry
and Jamal Murray excuse me, and you know Lou Dort
and Archie Barrett.
Speaker 3 (46:47):
They got guys. Man. I think it's gonna be a
good game.
Speaker 8 (46:53):
Yeah, I mean the only the only thing that is
going against them is they don't have Andrew Wiggins. That
was some weird stuff going on where there was the
miscommunication that the Warriors felt they had with Andrew Wiggins
in his health and they brought up some concerns about
you know, him playing. So that's a huge absence. But
(47:13):
to your point, Jagoes Alexander, I think is the menage
himself is you know, one of the MVP cans of
the league right now. And Lou Dort he is amazing defender.
I mean he is so physical. Yes, he fights for screens. Well,
I talked with him earlier this season.
Speaker 3 (47:33):
No joke.
Speaker 8 (47:33):
After every game he whips out his iPad and like
jots down quick notes about some of the players he
defended that night as a study guide, and then he'll
reread through his iPad notes, you know, when he gets home.
So there's a lot of good things that Canada has
to offer. But again, when he compared to the US,
(47:56):
you know, it's a different conversation when it's the fat
games because it's usually like the second tier of stars,
and you know they don't have the continuity. But here
it's everyone's best shot with the US, and I think
even with the game being global, you know there's still
a separation between a team that has Lebron Stephan Durant
(48:19):
versus everyone else.
Speaker 2 (48:20):
Well, I'm glad you brought up a defensive intensity because
lou Dort not only fit, said Bill.
Speaker 3 (48:26):
SODA's Dylan Brooks a SODA's RJ. Barrett.
Speaker 2 (48:28):
So does SGA and they're all two way players, so
it could be fun, it could be I would not
rolled out. I think if those two teams played ten times,
USA wins seven or eight, maybe nine, But they only
need to beat him once probably, So we'll see what happens,
all right. Free agency is starting to wind down. A
couple of interesting signings in the last twenty four hours.
(48:49):
Caleb Williams goes to the Sixers. Here's why that surprised me.
I believe he turned down sixty five million from the
Heat and got pretty too many from the Sixers.
Speaker 3 (49:01):
What was your thinking there.
Speaker 8 (49:03):
Well, I think what happens there is that once you
have a pretty good team, you can get guys to
take pay cuts because the idea is okay, like what
try to win championships. So that's really good, and the
Sixers really need that because they put all their you know,
(49:23):
eggs into getting the third star and with the labor
deal with the second apron. Like, I think the Sixers
might be the last team that has that big three,
so that that falls under the convention that when you
have that uh you know, kind of core in place
where you have some predominant star players, you can get
guys on discounts and then when you're you're a team
(49:48):
that's you know, trying to be on the up and
up here, you're often overspending for average players.
Speaker 3 (49:54):
That's very true.
Speaker 2 (49:55):
I talk with Mark Medina, Medina managing it gonna be
Saturday night midnight twelve minute Pacific time here on the
Bernie Frattle Show. All right, let's talk tomorrow. DeRozan, he
was like the last of the Mohicans that might come
to the Lakers.
Speaker 3 (50:09):
Right.
Speaker 2 (50:09):
He gets a seventy four million dollar deal now a
week ago, and I knew this wasn't going to happen.
These are the kind of things that make my teethache.
Where Lebron talked about maybe taking a pay cut. So listen,
the world is evictately enough played with all hypotheticals or
straw man arguments. But I'm going to break my own rule.
So Lebron got a two year deal fifty two million
a year. If he would have said, hey, i'll take
(50:30):
twenty seven million a year and we'll give the three
year deal to Demorrow de Rozan, would DeRozan have come
to the Lakers or might he just said no, I
don't want to be there. I think we got a
better chance in Sacramento.
Speaker 3 (50:40):
Where was Damar DeRozan's head.
Speaker 8 (50:44):
Yeah, here's the thing that's so complicated because there's three
different levers and some of them are I mean, they're
all related, but some you know, they don't have control
over you know, the Lakers would have to do with
sign and trade. And you know we've talked talked about
this before. They just outside of Lebron and Ad, they
have players that other teams don't want, or if they
(51:06):
do want, like saying Austin Reeves or ruy Atchamora, they're
trying to sell the farm on them. And so I
think that's that's issue number one. Issue number two. I
actually believe Lebron would have taken a pay cut if
it was you know, actually realistic. I just don't think
that that ever arrived at the doorstep. You know, he
(51:27):
took a pay cut in twenty ten when he went
to the Heat. That's the only time ever in his
career he took a pay cut, but it was because
you know, it would help them build a better roster
for that championship team. The third thing, I think that
I'm a DeMar Derosen fan. I think he plays the
right way. You know, even in today's NBA mid range
(51:50):
is still a value, great locker room guy. But there's
no way around it. I think if you add Damar
to the Lakers, it's just a clunky fit because of
Lebron and AD. And I think that they had feared,
even though it's apples to oranges because Russell Westbrook has
different attributes. I think it was philosophically the same concern
(52:12):
of adding another ball dominant player when they've seen how
ineffective that is with Lebron and Ad as well as
you know how ineffective it is when they don't have
a supporting cast. So I think those things as well
as the fact that, look, the Kings are in a
better position. You know, Deered Fox and Demonte Sembonas are
(52:32):
really good players. They have a young core, and they
had more assets, better assets the trade of Chicago. So
hence Damar is with Sacramento. But it's ironic because there's
been so many opportunities. DeMar had a chance to come
back into his hometown and play for the Lakers twenty sixteen,
twenty twenty one, twenty twenty four, and it never happened.
Speaker 3 (52:56):
It never happens. Finally, well too, says real quickly.
Speaker 2 (53:01):
I really tip a cap to Klay Thompson and the
Dallas Mavericks.
Speaker 3 (53:04):
I heard their presentation him with Christine.
Speaker 2 (53:07):
I think it's just a match made in heaven in
terms of obviously Dallas showing that they needed that third shooter, right,
Josh Green couldn't get it done. Tim Hardaway couldn't get
it done. I got a feeling they're going to get
some They're gonna get a good Klay Thompson next year.
Speaker 8 (53:21):
Your thoughts, Yeah, I think he very well could be improved.
Speaker 3 (53:27):
Now.
Speaker 8 (53:27):
I'm not gonna say he's going to be the Klay
Thompson for twenty nineteen injury, but he's needed either. Yeah,
but I do share. Even though Michael Thompson has dad,
he's always optimistic about everything. I don't think he's ever
produced for the Lakers to lose. Ever, I do. I
do think he's within reason where he thinks this is
(53:47):
going to be Quay's bounced back here because Luca and Kyrie,
Luca Toscains or Kyrie, We're gon get a lot of
defensive attention. Quay's great and catch and shoot when I
pressed them on, you know, concerns about his defense. I
think Michael made a good point about, Okay, he can't
defend top point guards anymore, but he can guard wings
(54:08):
fairly decently. But I think he can do that. And
I think it also helps that, you know, because it's
a new environment and he has a chip on his
shoulder and Dallas is frankly a better team right now
than Golden State.
Speaker 3 (54:21):
Sure.
Speaker 8 (54:21):
Yeah, this this brings out a pretty good recipe that
play as a legitimate shot to win an NBA title
next season.
Speaker 2 (54:30):
Very much so. I like the I like to deal
for multiple reasons. And finally they finish it up on
the Lakers. Look, they won forty seven games last year,
they're going to run it back. You could make a
case that perhaps that if he hadn't run into Denver
in the first round, they might have had a deeper
playoff run. It's just a bad matchup for them. The
question is, though, can Lebron play seventy six games and
(54:51):
Anthony Davis played seventy three games next year, because without
both of them on the floor, their chance to sink
like a rock.
Speaker 8 (54:59):
Yeah yeah, well, I think it does help that we
should expect that Kate Vincent Jared Vanderbilt will be healthier
next season, But we can't assume the same thing with
Lebron James and Anthony Davis. Lebron's going to turn forty
in December at some time. The wheels fall Anthony Davis
Incidentally enough, I am more optimistic that he can be,
(55:22):
you know, in better health, because a lot of his
availability last season had to do with just fixing his
workout regimen. So I think that he'll repeat that. But
with Lebron, when he turned forty and you're playing this
much basketball, all bets are off. I think it was
very talent in his press conference today that he decided to,
(55:44):
you know, be company guy instead of sending coded messages
about his discuss with the front office. You know, he
had three opportunities to talk about the fact that the
Lakers stood pat and didn't make any move should be
on their draft picks. The first time, he didn't answer
the question. The second time he was asked about it,
(56:08):
he just said, you know, for me personally, my only
mindset is to come back and be ready to work
every single day, no matter who's there. And then when
I followed up and asked, well, if this is status quo,
what are your expectations for what the Lakers can be
next season, he just said, my expectations are for us
to go to work every day and try to get
better every day and push each other every day. There's
(56:30):
no talk about a championship or anything like this. So
I think he's convened the fact that it's you know what,
Like I tried my best, it's not in the cards.
The roster is what it is. I got paid, and
I'm going to make the best of it, and I
won't complain anymore fair enough.
Speaker 2 (56:47):
And I just got out my Brandy to English dictionary translation.
As long as I get on the floor with my
son this year, I'm good.
Speaker 3 (56:54):
That's why I see it. That's his total focus. In
my opinion.
Speaker 2 (56:58):
He'll show up, he'll play hard, but he wants to
be on the floor with his son and make history.
Speaker 3 (57:03):
And I think that's his number one priority.
Speaker 8 (57:05):
Yeah, and he signed a near max steel. Now, look,
he did take a little bit of a pay cup
three million, so they fell below the second apron, but
I think larger point. Hey, they all took care of me.
I'm still playing at a decently high level. Yes, I
saw as I saw last season, when I played an
all Star caliber level, it still didn't matter. So it's
(57:25):
apples and oranges because Kobe Bryant was fighting through all
sorts of injuries his final years. But it really reminded
me of Kobe's rhetoric when he was having his summer
camp in twenty fourteen, and they struck out yet again
on free agency, this time to Carmelo Anthony and instead
of you know, seething that he doesn't have a good
(57:47):
roster like, he was very pragmatic about it. I think
that that basically sent the same message a Lebron stud
that he knows, you know what, there's no way this
team can compete, So I'm over complaining about it. It's
almost like the old married couple that you know, just
figure out the best way to salvage everything is just
to stop arguing about that.
Speaker 2 (58:09):
Yeah, I think Lebron is metaphorically a walking old married couple.
Speaker 3 (58:13):
But that's a compedation.
Speaker 2 (58:16):
Mark, good stuff as always, and we shall see what
the new cycle brings. By the way, we'll have you
on this Thursday night. I'll be sitting in for Ben
Mallor on the eve of the NBA Summer League, and
you know there'll be headlines between now and Thursdays, So
look forward to having you then, Mark, all right, looking.
Speaker 8 (58:32):
Forward to we'll talk about a third player named Ronnie
coming up.
Speaker 3 (58:38):
Yep, I heard all about read all about it in
the papers. All right, Mark, and joy the rest of
your review, my friend. Thanks so much. That is Mark
Medina Medina Magic.
Speaker 2 (58:47):
Every Saturday night here at twelve midnight Pacific time on
the Bernie Frattle Show. We do it fifty two weeks
a year because the reality of it is, there is
always news in the National Basketball Association. Up the Yankees,
Well they got to win today, But what has happened
in the last three weeks? Just three weeks ago they
(59:07):
were eighteen games over five hundred and they were looking
like they were running away with the world with a
seven hundred winning percentage. Since then, some panic had set in.
Give you some quick thoughts on it as we opine.
I'm Bernie Fraddle, coming to you live from the Las
Vegas Fox Sports Radio to IRAQ dot com studios. Keep
it locked right here. You're listening to the Bernie Fraddle
Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (59:32):
Now were back in the Bernie Fradtle Show, Fox Sports Radio,
Come to you live from you TIREC dot com.
Speaker 2 (59:37):
Studios here in Las Vegas. Where to the sort of
the facto halfway point in baseball? Even though we're past
a halfway point and common parlance used to suggest that
if you're in first place on July fourth, well you're
probably gonna win the Pennant. Oh, things have really changed
quite a bit. And I talked about this Yether night
with Arnie. We are sort of watching some of these
(59:58):
second half stories, not the least of which that I
think Baltimore and the Yankees are going to duke it out.
And three weeks ago it didn't so much slip that way.
The Yankees were forty nine and twenty one. They had
just beaten Kansas City eleven to five. They had a
seven hundred winning percentage. Had they continue on that pace,
well they'd win one hundred and twelve games. Well, that
(01:00:18):
doesn't happen even with the Yankees, right, So they ended
up losing fourteen of their last nineteen games. They did
win on Saturday, but prior to Saturday they were five
and fourteen. So what has gone wrong for New York
during this stretch. One of the biggest issues at the
depth of their lineup was somewhat exposed after getting dealt
(01:00:39):
well I would consider to be a very serious blow
when g and Carlos Stanton went on the injured list.
Well that's you know, death taxes and G and Carlo
Stanton going on the injured list.
Speaker 3 (01:00:49):
But he has a hamstring strain, and those are a nightmare.
Those just Linger right.
Speaker 2 (01:00:53):
He had a terrible season last year, but Stanton had
really bounced back this year eighteen home runs and sixty
nine games, and he was certainly bolstered by the fact
he had Juan Soto in the lineup behind him protecting him,
and also Aaron Judge. However, you've got his absence now
gives the Yankees a real void.
Speaker 3 (01:01:14):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:01:15):
Alex Verdugo has taken his place in thirteen to the
last nineteen games, but his slugging percentage is three h
six that's almost one hundred points below the league average.
The other issues at the Yankees' pitching staff, which I
think had overachieved the first half. Unexpectedly they were superb.
(01:01:35):
They had a hot start, but downright or lately, they've
been downright stinky. They just simply have. They have a
lot over one hundred and twenty runs over the last
nineteen games. That's almost seven runs a game more than
any other team in the majors for that entire stretch.
You still got Aaron Judge, probably the best hitter in
baseball right now, but no g and Carlo Stanton. The
(01:01:57):
pitching staff's come back to Earth.
Speaker 3 (01:02:00):
And so the.
Speaker 2 (01:02:01):
Yankees may be scuffling for a while, will the Orioles
take advantage? Well, they're trying to. But I think it
might make for an interesting, I believe interesting penn and
race as it were. We haven't had one of those
in really quite a while. And with the expanded playoff format.
You know why guess whose name is back in the news?
(01:02:22):
A former coach, an NFL coach, a former Raiders coach
by the name of John Gruden.
Speaker 3 (01:02:30):
Why was his name in the news last week?
Speaker 2 (01:02:32):
But I'll tell you coming up, But first we go
to our guy, Steve Desager with the latest. All right,
thanks Steve. So John Gruden, you may recall it seems
like eons ago. He hasn't coached since twenty twenty one.
That was that nightmarish season with the Uh Boy. A
(01:02:56):
lot happened to the Raiders that year, and Rich Bassaccia
managed to help get them into the playoffs, the Henry
rug situation, and John Gruden lost his job. Remember the
emails that were leaked to the media before he resigned
as coach of the Raiders. Well, John Gruden filed a
lawsuit and just this last Monday, in three Nevada Supreme
Court justices. John Gruden wanted to ask them to reconsider
(01:03:19):
whether the lawsuit he filed against the NFL over those
league emails should be heard in court or private arbitration.
If it's in private arbitration, it clearly favors the NFL.
Speaker 3 (01:03:31):
Which I always thought it would be.
Speaker 2 (01:03:34):
But the attorneys for Gruden and the league in the NFL,
they're kind of keeping this quiet. They're not really talking
about it a lot.
Speaker 3 (01:03:42):
Because.
Speaker 2 (01:03:44):
What the league apparently wants to do is move this
civil contract interference in this conspiracy case, get it out
of state court, and get it into arbitration, which could
be seen it would be overseen by the Honorable Commisioner
Roger Goodell. So the lawsuit that John Gruden filed clear
(01:04:05):
back in November twenty twenty one allege is that Roger
Goodell and the league forced him to resign from the
Raiders when they leaked those emails, which are brutal.
Speaker 3 (01:04:15):
That's just not let's not mince words here.
Speaker 2 (01:04:19):
They were racist, they were sexist, they were homophobic, and
they apparently were emails that he'd sent earlier when he
was at ESPN. But that doesn't excuse anything, right, So
there's a there's a ruling that basically said that Gruden
understood that the NFL constitution allows for arbitration to resolve
(01:04:41):
these disputes. And at this point it appears that's where
that's headed. It's not one hundred percent clear whether Roger
Goodell or they'll have a designated third party arbitrator that
would hear Gruden's case. Right now, there was one dissenting
justice that wrote it would be out ages for Goodell
to arbitrate the dispute.
Speaker 3 (01:05:02):
Because he's a name defendant. All right.
Speaker 2 (01:05:05):
Remember John Gruden moved to Vegas in twenty twenty when
the Raiders moved here, and he got a ten year,
ten one hundred million dollar contract. So look, these emails
in question were sent apparently through a during a seven
year period to former Washington commandadors exact, Bruce Allen, when
(01:05:28):
John Gruden was with ESPN, and they were found they
had to prouse over six hundred thousand emails that the
league obtained during a workplace culture investigation. Remember, Daniel Snyder
no longer owns the Washington commander, so things seemed kind
of quiet there now, right. But John Gruden is very
much seeking monetary damages. He believes that the selective disclosure
(01:05:49):
of those emails and subsequently being publicized I think they
were in the Wall Street Journal in the New York Times.
Gruden says that destroyed his career and in ruined all
of his endorsement contracts. And this guy who's been in
the league since nineteen ninety, right, I mean, he's.
Speaker 3 (01:06:05):
Been a coach a long time.
Speaker 2 (01:06:06):
He's been with the Tampa Bay Box Oakland, got the
Bucks to a Super Bowl and three. He spent several
years as an analyst for ESPN before finally being hired
by the Raiders in twenty eighteen. So John Gruden named
back in the news. We're gonna follow this because it'll
be interesting to see where it goes. And right now
I would say it's I don't know how good it's
(01:06:28):
looking for John Gruden with respect to try to get
a judgment on this case. But again I'm speaking from
someone clearly on the outside looking in.
Speaker 3 (01:06:38):
We stick with the NFL.
Speaker 2 (01:06:40):
You know, it's funny Friday night, I have a segment
called The Midnight Hour. It runs from twelve minute Pacific
time for an hour. Callers just superb last night and
one of the subject matters we had had to do
with whether or not the Dallas Cowboys are still quasi
America's team. We know they haven't won anything in forever,
(01:07:00):
but due to their marketing, due to their presence, due
to their aura, everything from the Dallas Cowboy cheerlers and
the fact that more people watched Dallas Cowboys games on
TV than any other team in the league last year,
including the Kansas City Chiefs, which for second, are they
in fact still America's team? Well, the Chiefs are getting
ready to three P. Nobode's talking about that. Why not
(01:07:23):
are getting ready to attempt to three P? And I
think they can do it. I don't know if they
will do it, but I think they can. What a
storyline that will be this year? What are we talking
about though, Mike McCarthy, Barney Rebbel quibbling with Jerry Jones,
he doesn't have a contract yet, Ceedee Lamb wants to
get paid, Micah Parsons wants to get paid. And oh,
by the way, Dak Prescott wants to get paid and
what he's on vacation and a photo on social media
(01:07:47):
showed Dak Prescott wearing a walking boot. Okay, what the
Sam Hell's going on here, I'll explain. Coming up, I'm
Bernie Frowder. We are Comedy lyve from the Las Vegas
Fox Sports Radio diirect dot com Studios. Keep it lockar,
you're listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Oh we're back on the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Come to your line from tyrec dot com studios here
(01:08:09):
in Las Vegas. Take hip to three am Pacific, six
am Eastern. Want to bring Shane into this conversation the
Dallas Cowboys. Well, it's all sort of started the other
day because Cam Dudon. You remember Cam Duden went on
a rent and he was on a podcast called The
Fourth and One, and he basically said that he's angry
(01:08:33):
that the Cowboys are called America's team by some and
should not be due to their lack of recent success.
Speaker 3 (01:08:40):
He said, quote, they don't seem to know how to win.
Speaker 2 (01:08:42):
And then everybody points fingers at Dak quote I understand
the whole America's team.
Speaker 3 (01:08:47):
That is not America's team. No more ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 2 (01:08:50):
I don't know who had to say that the Kansas
City Chiefs is America's team by way of who's Dayton
who and who's winning what?
Speaker 3 (01:08:57):
They are America's team.
Speaker 2 (01:08:58):
Let's stop lying to ourselves, Okay, if you all want
to get back to that title, you got to obviously win, Okay,
and quote, well, maybe you should stop lying to yourself, Cam,
because you could have made the same comments about the
Kansas City Chiefs and given them their flowers without ever
invoking the Dallas Cowboys. So that's a tacit admission to
me that on some level the Cowboys are America's team
(01:09:22):
in their consciousness and their awareness. Remember, the opposite of
love is not hate, its indifference, so people might hate
watch as well. Shay, you got some thoughts on this?
Are the Cowboys? Can you make a case like it
or not? Even though they don't win, still America's team
on some level.
Speaker 3 (01:09:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:09:39):
It's actually funny that you were talking about this, because
I myself was. I was with Doug Gottlieb this past
week and we were we brought this topic up on
his in the Bonus podcast, and basically what I was
saying is why are they still relevant? Why after twenty
seven it's twenty seven years I think since they last
won their twenty eight years. Actually, yes, since they last
(01:09:59):
won their last Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (01:10:01):
And I've got an answer to that, but continue on. Oh,
I'll have an answer for you.
Speaker 7 (01:10:04):
Why are they still basically relevant? Why are we talking
about them? Why am I seeing them in the headlines,
even though every headline I've seen about them in the
last year or like that I even remember of has
been negative, from CD LAMB to Micah Parsons podcast to
Dak with his Walking boot. It's never necessarily something that's good.
But what Doug said is they sell. Instead of selling
(01:10:28):
basically dynasties, they're selling They're selling what I'd like to say, drama,
and like that's what America loves.
Speaker 3 (01:10:38):
Well. Who is selling the drama?
Speaker 6 (01:10:39):
The Cowboys, the Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (01:10:41):
Jerry Cowboys pr selling exactly.
Speaker 6 (01:10:43):
There's let me a dress.
Speaker 3 (01:10:45):
We're gonna have a goo two way discussion here. Let
me set this up.
Speaker 2 (01:10:48):
This all goes back to nineteen seventy eight NFL films,
The Great Steve Sable and Ed Sable did a feature
called America's Team and it all came about because one
of their producers by the name of Bob Bryan. Not
the same Bob Brian as the Boston Globe, but Bob
Brian was looking around saying, who is the most popular
(01:11:09):
team in America? And as he did his research, he
discovered that the Dallas Cowboys consistently have more fans of
the Cowboys at away games than any other team in
the NFL.
Speaker 3 (01:11:25):
So he concluded.
Speaker 2 (01:11:26):
They're the most popular team. He says, in fact, they're
America's team.
Speaker 3 (01:11:31):
Now. People can find this video on YouTube.
Speaker 2 (01:11:34):
It's called America's Team nineteen seventy eight NFL Films. They
can find it. That's how the ball got rolling. Fast
forward to last year, there are still more fans Shay
that watched Dallas Cowboys games on Network TV cumulatively than
any other team in the league, including the Kansas City Chiefs. So,
with all the respect to Doug, I don't know what
(01:11:55):
he's talking about. When it is you Dallas would intentionally
sell drama. Jerry Jones, I think they're just drama because
they're a bunch of egotistical maniacs, and also that I
think a lot of reasons the Cowboys are still in
the news. Is there a victim of their past success.
Speaker 3 (01:12:11):
And people even though they give you no reason to
expect them to win, and when they don't, there's a
whole other faction of people that are happy they're in
lives with large audience. Okay, you've got the floor of
my friend.
Speaker 6 (01:12:21):
And I want to add on that.
Speaker 7 (01:12:23):
Honestly, something else that I could see, Like in the
nineties they won three Super Bowls, yes, sir, and it
honestly like created a new generation of basically this America's
team legacy, you know what I mean, in.
Speaker 6 (01:12:36):
The nineties exactly.
Speaker 7 (01:12:38):
And now those those not in the nineties, like yeah,
let's say they were twenty years old. Now those guys
are fifty, they have kids, and those kids are going
to become Cowboys fans no matter where they're at, it
doesn't matter. I mean in Los Angeles. I live in
Los Angeles. I'm a Browns fan, you know what I mean.
I wouldn't do it that way with it, but it's
it's I can see why they're still America's team.
Speaker 3 (01:12:57):
By the way, the rounds open up with the Cowboys.
Speaker 6 (01:13:00):
Yeah, yeah, I'm very excited.
Speaker 2 (01:13:01):
And the Browns I think are going to be sneaky
good this year. But think about what you just said,
because it's very insightful. This nineties version of the Cowboys
really enhanced the whole America's Team, Moniker. Some of the
callers last night thought it started with them. I said, no,
not at all. It started in nineteen seventy eight when
(01:13:22):
Clint Murchison owned the team tech Shram Tom Landry that
whole deal. And that was eleven full years before Jerry
Jones Bottom and brought in Jimmy Johnson and they had
the you know, the herschel Walker trade where there was
the most infamous trade in history. People were talking about
that last night in my show, even though it's been
thirty five years. So what that did was set the
(01:13:43):
stage for America's Team to continue on well into the nineties.
Speaker 3 (01:13:48):
See you bring up a valid point.
Speaker 6 (01:13:49):
No, yeah, I mean they were crazy in the seventies too.
Speaker 7 (01:13:52):
You had the crazy Roger Stope what was his name,
Roger Staubach style back.
Speaker 6 (01:13:56):
Yeah, and they Tony.
Speaker 2 (01:13:58):
Dor said Super Bowls in the seventies and you know
they had that goofy stadium there with a whole I mean,
you know allegedly they ran out of money when they built.
I don't know what happened, but you know what they're
you know what their raction I was, we built a
stadium with a hole on the top. So God could
watch Cowboys games. They really believe their own bs. But
they packed it up on the field, and they had
(01:14:20):
legendary players, you know, Randy White right on.
Speaker 3 (01:14:23):
Down the line.
Speaker 6 (01:14:24):
So I think they were good at the right times,
you know what I mean.
Speaker 7 (01:14:27):
It's once they started losing a little bit, they started
losing some traction, then bang they have three.
Speaker 6 (01:14:33):
They have a year a century where they have three
Super Bowls. So it's like, all right, we're.
Speaker 7 (01:14:38):
Gonna We're gonna go ahead, and we'll give them some
more time. I think in the next five years, if
they're not able to get a Super Bowl, then we'll
start seeing a big decline in these Cowboys fans. Once
my generation starts having kids. I definitely do think we'll
see a dcne in in the Cowboys fans if they
think it's gonna end sh when.
Speaker 2 (01:15:02):
For whatever reason, and I hope he lives a long
time because I like him. Jerry Jones is no longer
the owner of the Cowboys. I think it's gonna I
think it's at that point going to start to fall
off a cliff because Jerry is a master marketer, and
if you know the story behind him building Jerry Dome
and how scared he was and the risk he took,
and how there was so much pressure to pay.
Speaker 3 (01:15:22):
For that thing. Dude, he really came through and.
Speaker 2 (01:15:24):
He started out as a wildcatter and oil field so
he's been a risk taker his whole life. I've always
had sort of this sexy image around him, whether you
like him or not. And if Jerry Jones goes away,
he's very polarizing. You'd agree with that, right.
Speaker 7 (01:15:38):
No, of course, Jerry Land. He's the creator of Jerry
Land and.
Speaker 3 (01:15:42):
If you know, again, I hope he lives a long time.
Speaker 2 (01:15:45):
But if for whatever reason he's no longer the owner
of the Cowboys, I think it changes the dynamic.
Speaker 7 (01:15:51):
I completely agree, And but I mean, is it's going
to be his daughter that takes over. I'm assuming, but
you're definitely right about that. It's well, I want to
circle around back to the drama thing. I think he
adds to that drama as well. And it's something that
you said to yourself when he made that risk, everyone
was looking at him, all eyes were on him, and
it's something that with the Cowboys, it's much more than
(01:16:13):
just a football team. The entertainment value that comes with
it is just tenfold compared to most teams well.
Speaker 2 (01:16:20):
And I think they embrace the America's team image. Right
The Kansas City Chiefs aort of the moment's rage. And
it doesn't hurt that Travis Kelsey is dating Taylor Swift
and she's going to be a fixture in Kansas City.
I understand she's going to go to every game this
coming year. They're on their way to three pete. I've
always gotten a kick out of Andy Reid. But and
(01:16:42):
ironically or coincidentally, the Chiefs, she were born in Dallas
as the Dallas Texans in nineteen sixty before they moved
to Kansas City. But only the Cowboys seem to want
to continue to embrace this image, right. This where the
homecoming Queen, even though it's thirty five years later and
we lost.
Speaker 3 (01:17:01):
Our looks and they no longer win.
Speaker 2 (01:17:04):
But it's also bolstered by the fact that there are
Cowboy fans in every city that lived there and they
still root for that team and they're living in the past.
And again, I think it's a team that is still
very much a victim of their own success, and people
expect him to continue to have success even though they don't.
I think it's going off a cliff this year, and
(01:17:25):
I think you could see Mike McCarthy fired mid season.
They opened up because Cleveland. Don't be surprised. If Cleveland
wins that game, then they got Baltimore week three. I
didn't even get to the Dak Prescott boot. That's what
started this whole thing. Dak Prescott in a boot is
a bigger headline than the Chiefs trying to repeat.
Speaker 3 (01:17:42):
I've got to get to that.
Speaker 2 (01:17:44):
And what Dak Prescott is saying why he's in the
boot is gonna crack you up. Come on, man, you're
peeing on my boots and telling me a training keep
it Locket's the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah,
that's right, you heard the man. The Bernie Frales Show
keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Froddle. We
are Comedy Line Froe Tarract dot Com Studios here in
(01:18:05):
Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio. Tyraq dot com will help
you get there. An unmatched selection, fast free shipping, fore
road answer to protection, and over ten thousand recommended installers.
Tyrect dot com the way tire buying should be. All right,
So this part of this whole Dallas Cowboy. Whether or
not they are the America's team that caused Cam Newton
(01:18:30):
to go on a rant the other day. He's born
of the fact that they're always in the news and is,
like Shay said, never usually for good reasons. Well it
happened again. Dak Prescott. Dak Prescott caught people's attention when
a photo on social media appeared this last week showed
(01:18:52):
him wearing a walking boot on his right ankle while
he was vacationing in Mexico Cobble St.
Speaker 3 (01:18:58):
Lucas.
Speaker 2 (01:18:59):
However, in Dak Prescott form, he attempted to, you know,
tamp down the concern. He told Clarence Hill of the
Fort Worth Star Telegram, what was just part of my
regular maintenance that he has to do since fracturing his
right ankle in twenty twenty. Aine, you may have forgotten
(01:19:20):
that it's been four years. Prescott had a bad, bad,
bad right ankle surgery compound fracture, dislocation against the New
York Giants four years ago, miss basically the last three
months of the season. So he told the reporter for
the Telegram, same ankle, same issues, and Prescott told him he, well,
(01:19:43):
I wear the boot on vacation because the last time
I went deep sea fishing, my ankle swoll up.
Speaker 3 (01:19:49):
But I'm great, Okay, really, are we really going to
do this? Then?
Speaker 2 (01:19:55):
Then why didn't we see you wearing the boot in
the off seat? He's in the last four years, Like
when you're in barbecues or miniature golfing or bowling or
whatever the hell you do in the offseason, how call
them all of a sudden, we see it now, right?
And by the way, Dak Prescott's no stranger to injury.
(01:20:15):
He missed a couple of games in twenty twenty one
with a calf strain. He missed four or five games
the following year with a fractured thumb. His past year,
he did play in all seventeen games, finished second to
Lamar Jackson an MVP voting. But Prescott is entering the
final year of his contract and he's doing extension, and
(01:20:36):
he wants that extension that's expected to make him the
highest paid player in the NFL. I think Jerry Jones
has a real, real dilemma on his hands because this
guy can't win a playoff game. And yeah, it is
a lot of his fault because when the heat gets
hot and it's hard to breathe, and it matters. He
doesn't come through, He makes bad decisions and he gets
(01:20:58):
beaten in Mike McCarthy been out coached pretty consistently in
the last four years or the last three years, in
every big game. And I think Jerry Jones is put
off by the fact. I mean, and I know that.
Speaker 3 (01:21:12):
Here's the dilemma.
Speaker 2 (01:21:14):
If you're the Cowboys, you sure as hell don't want
to go back to the Drew Henson Quincy Carter era, right,
you don't want that. But at the same time, do
you just automatically pay your quarterback sixty million dollars just
just because it's his turn, just because the other guys
(01:21:38):
are getting that? And the truth of the matter is
that I actually think this could be the year. And
Dallas has gone twelve and five the last three years, right,
But what have they done? What have they done when
it comes to the playoffs, and what have they done
when it comes to Jerry Jones desperately wanting to win
(01:22:02):
a Super Bowl without being attached to Jimmy Johnson. Remember
Jimmy Johnson won two. They had that breakup in March
of ninety four. To this day, I still can't believe.
And it all stemmed from the fact, I guess Jerry
told somebody the banquet, well, any one of one hundred
coaches could have won with that team. That wasn't really
fair to Jimmy Johnson. He was an architect of a
hell of a team. Barry Switzer took over, was very shrewd,
(01:22:25):
knew how to knew how to stay the hell out
of the way, and the Cowboys won again and won
one more just for fun in ninety six. So the
truth of the matter is we're just getting the tip
of the iceberg, and the Cowboys fans are getting more
and more frustrated. They've not made it past the divisional round.
(01:22:47):
For they're winning a super Bowl. They haven't made it
past the divisional round since January of nineteen ninety six.
And when you look at their roster on paper, they
appear to be very talented. It just can't seem to
get over the hump when accounts now. I've mentioned the
issues with Dak Prescott, I've mentioned the issues with Mike McCarthy, etc.
How about Dallas's running game. They opted to let Tony
(01:23:09):
Pollard walk away in free agency after a not very
good twenty twenty three season. But here's the problem. Who
they replaced him with. There was thoughts that the Cowboys
would go after Derrick Henry. He was widely viewed as
a potential target going into the off season. But then
the Cowboys allegedly or apparently extensively, they ended up not
(01:23:31):
expressing any interest in Derrick Henry. He ended up signing
to Henry ended up signing with the Baltimore Ravens. Then
they were even, you know, talking about bringing it back
to Ezekiel Elliott, which I believe they have done. That
feels a little bit like a panic move. So here's
your Dallas cowboy running back room, Ezekiel Elliott, Douce Vaughn
(01:23:54):
and Rico Dowdle. Now, who knows, maybe they'll go out
and light it up right. You know, the importance of
the ground is not what it used to be. It's
been diminished in the modern NFL. It's basically become basketball
on turf. But you cannot be one dimensional. You cannot
be one dimensional in even this man's NFL. And when
it comes to getting the hard yard on the gold line,
(01:24:15):
moving the chains on third down, burning clock in the
fourth quarter to hold a lead. You've got to be
able to run the ball. What kind of rushing attack
are the Cowboys going to get? And if you don't
get a rushing attack, guess what. You sit back and
you let you create real worry on the face of
Dak Prescott. I don't dislike Dak Prescott. It's just in
a way it matters. He's really good when it doesn't matter.
(01:24:37):
And speaking of guys to throw to do, the Cowboys
have an augh depth of wide receiver. Yes, you've got
CD Lamb. He's you could make a case he's the
best receiver in football. He's probably not, but he's He's
on the short list, as bum Phillips used to say,
you know, I don't know who's head of the class,
but don't take long to call roll ceedee. Lamb is
near the top, and he wants to get paid, so
(01:24:59):
you gotta believe he's motivated. But you got Brandon Cooks
as your number two receiver, fairly big name, but he
was a big disappointment in Dallas last year. After that,
you tell me if you've ever heard guys like Jalen
Tolbert and Jalen Brooks, they've never proven themselves on the
NFL level. Once again, they say the Cowboys were all in,
but they completely ignored the wide receiver position in free agency.
(01:25:22):
They didn't do anything in free agency in any position
really of substance when it comes down to it. They
also did not use a high draft pick on a receiver.
So you've got a questionable running game and you've got
a questionable depth a wide receiver. You got Slim Pickens.
Now not the actor Slim Pickens. You know where I'm
getting again, Ceedee Lamb, He's the real deal. All this
(01:25:45):
leads to, I think perhaps the biggest question of all,
what is the mindset in the zeitgeist and the culture
of the locker room today. Everybody can see that the
Coboys are having a lot of organizational issues. Dak Prescott's
looking for a new deal, he hasn't got one, Ceed
(01:26:06):
Lambis threatening to hold out, Micah Parsons. Haven't he brought
up his name, Superstar Edge Rusher. He's at odds, I believe,
quietly with the team, and there are rumors he's at
odds with safety Malie Hooker. And then you are hearing
and I don't know. Again, clearly this is somebody from
(01:26:29):
the outside looking in. There have been allegations that the
Cowboys themselves are getting tired of Micah Parson's behavior. I
don't know what that behavior entails. Michael Parsons, he's a
terrific player.
Speaker 3 (01:26:43):
What this all does?
Speaker 2 (01:26:44):
You added up and put it into a blender and
you have the proverbial volatile situation. And I just told Shay,
I think Cleveland can beat the Cowboys week one.
Speaker 3 (01:26:54):
I think Cleveland's gonna be good. I really do.
Speaker 2 (01:26:57):
I don't know if Deshaun Watson's going to be any good.
Rounds are going to be good, and I there's a
lot to like about them. Conversation for a different day,
I agree it, yeah, and we'll follow that throughout the season, Shay,
and I believe the Cowboys don't have the schedule in
front of me. I believe they have Baltimore in week
three and they they've got the Lions in week five.
(01:27:19):
If the Cowboys get off to a rocky start, what
does that do to the state of the locker room.
Throw in the fact Mike McCarthy's on the hot seat,
and you get this perfect storm, which is which is
saying I hate but it is starting to become the
perfect storm.
Speaker 3 (01:27:36):
What solves all this winning?
Speaker 2 (01:27:40):
All Right, Dallas has the benefit of playing in a
relatively easy division. It's them in Philadelphia. However, I think
Philadelphia is better than Dallas. So you add up everything
I just said, Throw in a difficult schedule, some internal conflict,
Mike McCarthy, Jerry Jones, and everything. I I don't think
(01:28:00):
I left anything out. And the truth of the matter
is this is shaping up to look like a real.
Speaker 3 (01:28:08):
This could be the year.
Speaker 2 (01:28:09):
This could be the year that it finally goes off
a cliff for the Dallas Cowboys. Not necessarily predicting it,
but what I will say is this that things look
shakier there than at any time I can recall in
recent memory.
Speaker 3 (01:28:29):
So there you have it. Coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:28:32):
Well, it looks like the US men's national team and
Greg Borberhoalter his future will be decided next week after
they flop at Copa America.
Speaker 3 (01:28:44):
We talk about that. Coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:28:46):
Hi, Bernie Frattle, We're coming to you live from the
Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tirack dot Com studios.
Speaker 3 (01:28:50):
Keep it locked right here. You're listening to the Bernie
Frale Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:28:54):
All right, back on the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports
Radio coming to live from the tarret dot Com studios
here in Las Vegas. They were forty one minutes away
the dance Sensation sweep in the nation. What kind of
brand new fool you followed by what my name?
Speaker 3 (01:29:11):
Well?
Speaker 2 (01:29:11):
As Copa America continues, there is one team noticeably absent.
And before I'll tell you, before I dive into this chef,
do you think Greg Berhalter should be fired?
Speaker 3 (01:29:27):
And do you think he will be fired? Two different questions.
Speaker 9 (01:29:31):
I'm not sure if he will be fired. I think
he should be just because I was such a disastrous
performance by the United States men's national team in a
Copa America. He not even making it out of the
group stage and I think they only had one point
in group play, So I mean that was just not
a showing that that meant the expectations that is this program.
(01:29:52):
I mean, they made it to the knockout stage in
the World Cup, and the idea is maybe, okay, they
can build on that, maybe get themselves a little more
competitive to maybe make it to the quarterfinal round. But
with what they did in Copa America shows that they
are still way behind the competitive countries in global soccer,
So I think he should be fired because America should
(01:30:12):
strive to be better than they have been at soccer.
Speaker 1 (01:30:15):
Whether he is or not, I'm not sure yet.
Speaker 2 (01:30:18):
Okay, that's well said because the people off talk to
think he's coming back, but maybe he should be. Now,
one last thing before I get to shay. Uruguay beat
Brazil tonight, so maybe they're better than we thought. Does
that take a little steam off the kettle? Knowing that
we lost the urge but goes on and beats Brazil.
Speaker 9 (01:30:40):
Not really, just because it was accumulative showing in those
three games. They just did not look that impressive the
entire time they played, So with Uruguay having a better
showing than expected, to me, doesn't really change a lot
fair enough?
Speaker 2 (01:30:57):
And were not Were we not dubbed be the best
talented roster we've ever had this year?
Speaker 3 (01:31:03):
Or did I read that wrong? I mean I had
heard someone mentioning that.
Speaker 9 (01:31:09):
I have not necessarily heard that, but this is as
good as they've been in a while, at least based
on what I've heard. Yeah, I mean, I'm not the
biggest expert on US soccer, but from what I've been reading,
at least there's a lot of expectation for these guys
to perform and they haven't.
Speaker 2 (01:31:23):
Based on I think the talent we allegedly had Shay.
Will Greg Halter be fired, yes or no? And should
he be fired yes or no?
Speaker 6 (01:31:31):
I mean that's the issue with USA Soccer.
Speaker 7 (01:31:34):
It's we keep firing these coaches, I think. I mean
it's necessarily. I don't think it's an issue at the
coaching aspect at all. I think it's more of an
issue of the actual talent that we're surrounding around our coaches.
But I do think he'll get fired just because USA
Soccer doesn't know how to learn from their mistakes. And
(01:31:56):
I brought this up on one of the shows this
past week. Is it's not necessarily, as I said before,
the coaches issue. It's the issue is we were when
we had a way better showing in our FIFA World
Cup this past time, when we tied with Wales and
tied with England and then b d Ron we made
(01:32:16):
a mistake by not really providing the youth programs the
money they needed because that's when soccer started blowing up
way more in the USA. And if you look at
it in twenty twenty, they lost so much money in
the youth aspect, they were not putting anything in it.
A lot of these specialized schools, like the Galaxy School
(01:32:37):
near me lost its girls program. It's such an issue
that it's necessarily like they're shooting themselves in the foot
over and over again because they're never making the right
decisions and they're never doing the right things. And people
always say that, oh, what if Tyreek Hill was playing
in soccer, like it would be a completely different story
if our athletes were playing, Then why are we not
(01:33:00):
promoting it more within youth programs.
Speaker 6 (01:33:02):
That's the main issue.
Speaker 7 (01:33:03):
It's not about the coaching, it's not about what we're
surrounding our teams with. It's it's about getting the right
people and understanding why our athletes aren't at the highest.
Speaker 6 (01:33:15):
Peak they can be.
Speaker 7 (01:33:16):
It's because it's our youth programs are one of the
worst in the world, and yet we have so much
money that we could be putting into them. But like
I was reading this article the other day that I'm
going to bring up here right now, it's the the
Galaxy School like near me literally closed down. It's it's uh,
it's girls, it's girls program. After the the the US
(01:33:39):
Soccer Initiative for the youth. I think it's the name
of the organization was closed down, and it's causing such
a huge ripple effect in domino effect going all the
way up to our pro national league, and it's seriously,
it's it's it's just upsetting because, honestly, like right after
the FIFA World Cup, I never saw more Americans talk
(01:34:00):
about soccer ever in my life, and yet we did
nothing with it. We did nothing with the hype and
just nothing got like it just made no sense to me.
Speaker 6 (01:34:09):
Serious.
Speaker 2 (01:34:09):
So Greg, this is Greg Burhalter's second go around. It's
my understanding the players like him. So I'm going to
make a prediction that they're not going to fire them,
and we'll revisit this next time.
Speaker 6 (01:34:21):
I hope they don't. I really hope they.
Speaker 2 (01:34:22):
My gut feel is that they will not, because, like
you said, we keep recycling coaches every two or three years,
like go and at least in a brand new car
every two or three years. You know that doesn't work
and you lose that kind of continuity. So I'm gonna
make that prediction. But like I asked the chef, the
fact that they lost the US lost to Uruguay, which
(01:34:44):
was a shocker. We needed to win that game. Then
your Guay goes on and beat Brazil. Does that let
a little bit of steam off the cattle in terms
of maybe we're not that far away A couple tweaks.
I don't know, does that help at all?
Speaker 1 (01:35:02):
It's probably not.
Speaker 3 (01:35:04):
I mean, it's a stretch.
Speaker 7 (01:35:06):
It's it's definitely a stretch. I think it's more of
just it's a stretch. Yeah, it's it's well, we'll just leave, yeah,
I mean.
Speaker 3 (01:35:14):
We'll just leave there.
Speaker 2 (01:35:15):
So let me let me dive into this then, because
the truth of the matter is, this is what's being
talked about behind the four walls in the Ivory Tower.
Greg Burghalter's time as the men's national team coach could
be coming to an end. And uh, you don't hear
this name much, but the the US Soccer Federation Sporting
(01:35:36):
director is a guy the name of a Matt Crocker,
and he's gonna make the decision quickly one way or
the other. All right, he's gonna we are told that
he will make the decision by next Wednesday or Thursday.
And you have to make some kind of decision because
even though you got a Copa America tournament, a prestigious tournament.
We can't even make it out of group play. Somehow
(01:35:58):
we were ranked in a number eleven in the world,
but yet we don't make it out of group play.
And although some people believe that that ranking should be
in dispute, but we only beat Bolivia and then you
lose to Panama on Uruguay and you needed to beat
one of those to have a shot at advancing. So
when you need to win, and then here come the platitudes.
(01:36:20):
Right after the tournament, Crocker says, you know, we fell
short of expectations. We must do better. Okay, YadA, YadA yah.
We get it, first time since twenty sixteen since the
men's team competed in Copa America. Here's the problem. In
(01:36:40):
twenty sixteen, obviously we hosted that event as well, but
the US finished in fourth place in twenty sixteen, that
was tied for their best Copa finish ever, so we're
going backwards. Then it comes a year after flopping at
the Gold Cup, which is a much less prestigious tournament,
and those are teams in cocker Calf only, so the
(01:37:02):
competition was down and the US had actually won six
Gold Cups in the last twenty four years, but you
finished fourth and last year's edition, which was their lowest edition,
or check that their lowest finish in twenty five years,
again an event we hosted, so as you can see,
the team, the program, the US soccer in general is
(01:37:27):
going in the wrong direction. And I think that is
perhaps the most problematic thing that we're facing right here,
is not only are we not winning, we're going in
the wrong direction. And I think that's it's a bitter
pill for people to swallow. And you're going to see
a decision made this week as to whether or not
Greg Berhalter returns, you know, and I think the World
(01:37:50):
Cup is in twenty twenty six.
Speaker 3 (01:37:52):
Twenty twenty six, right.
Speaker 2 (01:37:53):
So we still got a couple, we got some years,
we got a little bit of time. So that also, well,
I think has to be part of the conversation. What
do I mean by that, Well, do we run the
risk of starting all over, restaffing recoaching once again for
the gazillion time, or do we have a situation where
(01:38:15):
maybe you have to start over because if you keep
on doing what you've been doing, you're going to keep
on getting what you've been getting and I think that's
that's a dynamic here that it's not sitting well with
some people.
Speaker 7 (01:38:28):
Real quick, Brady, before before you move on, I wanted
to say the US Soccer that closed their development academy.
So their entire development academy is what they closed in
twenty twenty because of COVID and everything, but they never
rebrought it back up. So basically any specialized academy that
was with through US Soccer or like MLS funded basically
got closed down in twenty twenty. So you're definitely right.
(01:38:49):
We're definitely going backwards. And it's and it has all
to do because we're just we're not really putting the
money that we used to put into it.
Speaker 2 (01:38:57):
Somewhere along the line, if enough of the right people care,
this can be corrected. And this is a tacit admission
that enough of the right people simply don't care. Coming up,
imagine you win a championship and your team is for
sale and man, you talk about fetching a bag. Well,
(01:39:17):
let me tell you what's going on. But first's go
back to our guy, the chef with the latest.
Speaker 3 (01:39:23):
Be be you the one for me? In all that
I want to be.
Speaker 1 (01:39:41):
And me.
Speaker 3 (01:39:52):
Come up the chef with a baffo performance tonight.
Speaker 9 (01:39:57):
I had to go across Hell's Highway, which is Supulvida Pass.
It took me two hours ago, about four miles, but
I had to make it here at least give this
performance for.
Speaker 8 (01:40:06):
You, Burn.
Speaker 1 (01:40:07):
I had to. Really, I would have been upset if
I couldn't have made.
Speaker 2 (01:40:11):
It in your bill, Yes, the fans are collectively cheering
across the United States right.
Speaker 1 (01:40:17):
Here we go.
Speaker 9 (01:40:18):
Yeah, several people in Sacramento cheering because they're getting DeMar DeRozan.
The King's acquiring Rose DeRozan in a sign and trade
with the San Antonio Spurso. Harrison Barnes will be heading
to the Lone Star State. As for the Summer League aption,
Brownie James making his NBA Summer League debut, but it
(01:40:39):
was a bit of a struggle, shooting two A nine
from the field four points as the Lakers lost one
oh W eight ninety four to the Sacramento Kings. On
the women's side of things in the WNBA, Indiana trailing
by eleven in the fourth quarter, but they're stay able
to beat the New York Liberty eighty three seventy eight,
as Caitlin Clark recorded the first triple double by a
rookie in at w NBA history in Major League Baseball, Dodgers,
(01:41:05):
for the second day in a row, beat the Milwaukee Brewers,
winning at five to three. Shoeotani launching his twenty eighth
home run of the season, braves over the Phillies five
to one. The Guardians get by the San Francisco Giants
five to four. The Angels get an outstanding bro performance
from Tyler Anderson eight shutout innings as the Halos blank
(01:41:26):
the Cubs seven nothing. The Oakland Athletics, where did this
team come from? Nineteen to eight? They absolutely demolished the
Orioles and it's a shame not many people there to
see eighty five hundred fans in attendance at the Oakland Coliseum.
The Nationals give the Saint Louis Cardinals a bad time,
winning that one fourteen to six. The Yankees, snapping a
(01:41:47):
four game losing streak, able to even up their rivalry
series with the Boston Red Sox fourteen to four, as
rookie Ben Rice had three home runs and seven RBIs
for the Bronx. As for the All Star team, the
complete rosters will be revealed on Sunday. As for soccer,
(01:42:09):
Brazil is out of COPAA America after losing to Uruguay
on penalty kicks. Columbia shuts out Panama five nails, so
Columbia is still undefeated in its last twenty seven games.
At the Euro twenty twenty four Championships, England won its
quarter final penalty kicks against Switzerland, Netherlands eliminate Netherlands eliminates
Turkey too to one. And at Wimbledon, IGOs Viatik losing
(01:42:34):
in three sets. Men's number one player Novak Djokovic did
advance though to the fourth round. And some tragic news
Vikings fourth round. A defensive back Kyrie Jackson played at
Oregon last year, dying in a car accident. He was
just twenty four years old. Back to Bernie, all.
Speaker 2 (01:42:52):
Right, thanks Jeff, you it's very tragic news. Great player
at Oregon. Vikings could have really used him, all right.
The Boston Celtics, what do you do June twenty first,
you win a championship and whoa, here we go a
massive turn of events. The owners stating that quote for
a state and family planning considerations. The Boston Celtics may
(01:43:16):
go off for sale. This comes completely out of left field.
Nobody saw this coming. When you talk about a such
an honorable franchise like the Boston Celtics, I mean, this
is like, well, like, if the Cowboys are being sold,
they were last sold in nineteen eighty nine, that was
(01:43:39):
thirty five years ago. How about the the Yankees being sold.
They were last sold to George Steinbreann in nineteen seventy three.
And of course the Lakers Doctor Buss bought them in
the summer seventy nine from Jack King Cook. And so
you are talking about iconic franchises like the Lakers, Yankees, Cowboys,
(01:44:00):
They're not sold very often. So the Celtics deal certainly well,
I don't know how we will not set an NBA
record for a team sale. When you consider the Suns.
The Phoenix Suns sold last year for four billion. The Celtics,
I believe, could fetch as much as six billion. And
(01:44:21):
you're talking about a market that's got plenty of luster,
not just because of the recent championship, but they have
the same kind of aura as the New York teams
and the LA teams and certainly even the Dallas Cowboys
The issue here though, is that the transition apparently could
be a little tricky because although the owner and I
don't know how to pronounce his name, White Grousbeck, I
(01:44:42):
think it's only pronounced his name, he has partners and
they intend to sell the majority interests. It's not going
to beat at air tomorrow, could be into twenty twenty
five they want. But this gross Beeck wants to stay
on and remain as the Celtic as governor and that
is the team's kind of key decision maker for at
(01:45:03):
least four more years. So that's kind of an elongated
period for a new owner to come in and not
be able to call the shots. So the Celtics ownership group,
by the way, and you heard me talk about the
second Apron a while ago, Well, the Celtics are one
of those teams.
Speaker 3 (01:45:21):
That are facing huge luxury tax bills.
Speaker 2 (01:45:23):
The NBA luxury tax bill that the Celtics will receive,
it's about forty million dollars for this past season. And
I think, come on, you just signed Jason Tatum and
that Supermax contract is going to pay him three hundred
and fourteen million over five years, like seventy two million
in the final year, okay, and then you got Jalen
Brown in his five year, three hundred and four.
Speaker 3 (01:45:45):
Million dollars deal.
Speaker 2 (01:45:46):
He could be set to receive four hundred and eighty
million between twenty five and twenty nine. So you know,
the new owners are going to have some big checks
to write. But the good news is that the you
you get a great arena in the TD Garden that's
owned by a company called Delaware Delaware North. They're the
parent company. The Boston Bruins and the Celtics have only
(01:46:09):
a minority interest in the regional sports network.
Speaker 3 (01:46:12):
But the you.
Speaker 2 (01:46:14):
Know, the Celtics, let's put it this way, they're no,
they do not lack for revenue. But here's the big takeaway.
This group, to me, has been seen as always a
very stable and successful group Boston's pro team owners, whether
it's the Red Sox, whether it's the Celtics, certainly, whether
(01:46:36):
it's the Boston Bruins, no major local men's pro team
has been sold in twenty two years. That's when Grausbeck
and his partners purchased this Celtics team for three d
and sixty million dollars and I think they'll fetch six billion.
That's my guess. I could be wrong. It's a guess, right. Look,
(01:46:59):
Boston's in the hell of a sports town. Just in
what the last twenty years, you got the Pats, the
Red Sox, the Celtics, the Bruins. They've combined for thirteen
titles just this century alone.
Speaker 3 (01:47:10):
That's big time, right.
Speaker 2 (01:47:12):
So you've got a multi sport ownership group and they
also include I think a Premier Soccer League team Liverpool,
among other golf entities and things of that nature. So
Grosspeck may be winding down his ownership with the team,
but I think he still has a lot of equity
interests and I don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon.
(01:47:32):
But when you hear, especially right after they just win
a championship in a very impressive fashion, after a very
impressive regular season, that the Boston Celtics are up for sale,
well that makes the news.
Speaker 3 (01:47:46):
Yes, that makes the news. I'll tell you what el
else makes the news.
Speaker 2 (01:47:51):
You heard recently that former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter,
who's pleading guilty this week, banned for life from the NBA.
Well things just got worse for Johntay Porter. Coming up
this week we'll tell you what he's facing next. I'm
Bernie Fraddlew're Kemedy Lyn from the Las Vegas Fox Sports
(01:48:12):
Radio tirect dot com studios. Keep it locked right here.
You're listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Hi,
right back on the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
We are comedy live from the tyrec dot com studios
here in a Las Vegas. Coming up in fifteen minutes,
the Dance Sensation Sweep of the Nation. What kind of
brand new fool you followed by?
Speaker 3 (01:48:33):
What my name?
Speaker 2 (01:48:34):
I got another doozy. This one comes to us from
Bangor Maine. I don't know if that we've had that
part of the country represented. Seem me to have Florida
a lot, but don't know that we've had banger Maine.
This one will of course cause you to raise an eyebrow,
as they all do. By the way, I want to
remind everybody shortly after the show tonight, our podcast will
(01:48:55):
be going up. Shay will be taking care of that.
If you missed any of tonight's show, well, be sure
to check out the podcast. Just search Fox Sports Radio
wherever you get your podcasts. Also, be sure to follow
rate and review the podcast.
Speaker 3 (01:49:10):
Again.
Speaker 2 (01:49:11):
Just search Fox Sports Radio wherever you get your podcasts,
and you'll see the show posted right after we get
off the air. All Right, it's been a rough few
months for John tay Porter. As you recall, John tay
Porter was part of a little bit of a gambling
scandal having to do with some prop bets whereby games
(01:49:33):
on January twenty sixth and March twentieth. John tay Porter
exited both of those games early due to what he
claimed or health problems, but in both instances he was
connected allegedly to co conspirators who'd play significant wagers on
Porter to underperform he's expected stats. So I think one
(01:49:55):
had to do with rebounds or something.
Speaker 3 (01:49:57):
But the bottom line is, let me say this up pretend,
and you know what, a prop that is, right, has
nothing to do with the actual outcome of the game.
What it has to do with side aspects side bets
during the game. For instance, will you score nine points?
Speaker 2 (01:50:15):
Yes or no? If you like the under, you bet
the under. If he scores less than nine points to cash,
well you get X amount of rebounds, etcetera. Well, if
you exit the game early, then that under is going
to cash because you weren't on the game long enough.
And if that's pre planned, or if it's pre arranged
and it turns out maybe that was being done because
you have to pay have some gambling debts. That's where
(01:50:36):
it gets dicey. You see, now, John Tay Porter is
going to be facing federal felony charges concerning this betting
scandal that saw him ban from the NBA. According to
the Associated Press, you've not got federal prosecutors in Brooklyn.
They filed chargers against Porter. He was named as a
defendive in this case brought by the US Department of Justice.
(01:50:58):
This is kind of a big deal. Porter previously was
unnamed regarding those chargers that were brought against the other
four co conspirators who allegedly coerced Jontay Porter into manipulating
his on core performance as part of the gambling scheme.
You see where I'm going. We'll bet you score under
(01:51:18):
nine points or whatever. We'll bet you get under eight rebounds.
Just make sure you don't go out and do it.
And if you leave the game, well that's good for us.
Speaker 3 (01:51:26):
We cashed it.
Speaker 2 (01:51:26):
It was a fairly significant money involved from what I thought,
poor guy's only twenty four.
Speaker 3 (01:51:30):
Years old, banned from the NBA. He violate a league rules.
Speaker 2 (01:51:35):
By here's the key. This is what I think they
worry about more than anything. Information, This closing confidential information
and sports betters. And then you limit your own participation
in a couple of those games for betting purposes, and
then you bet on those NBA games, and you add
it all up and it becomes a.
Speaker 3 (01:51:54):
Very serious situation.
Speaker 2 (01:51:56):
So it's been reported that Porter is being investigated by
the Ontario Provincial.
Speaker 3 (01:52:03):
Police for his involvement in this game.
Speaker 2 (01:52:06):
He's a sixth seven if you may or may not
recall him, he's six ' eleven, played for Toronto, only
appeared in twenty six games this past season for the Raptors.
But obviously, as like office base, not gonna be working
here anymore. Right, this is a serious situation, and it
wasn't just him. Four other men were charged with wirefraud
(01:52:27):
by US authorities in New York in connection with those
prop bets placed back in January and back in marsh
One of the games was against Sacramento and I think
the other was against the Clippers. And this investigation has
been going on a while because as recent as June,
there were no charges against Porter that were announced, but
now that has changed, but he's been banned Adam Silver.
(01:52:50):
Commissioner Adam Silver banned John Tey Porter for life from
the league on April seventeenth after they found out that
he had again given personal health information to known betters.
Those betters and took that information bet on the games.
He limited his participation, played three minutes against the Kings
(01:53:10):
before taking him out of this, taking himself out of
the game citing illness. And this coincides with multiple sports
books that reported well, and we talked about this last
night with Dave Sherpan. The checks and balances we have
in place now are pretty good. So I don't necessarily
look at this as a negative from the standpoint of
(01:53:33):
the fact that we have these major scandals, which that's
not good. But what this does show is that the
system is working because multiple sports books or you know,
the security aspect of these systems are working.
Speaker 3 (01:53:44):
Because there were.
Speaker 2 (01:53:45):
Multiple sports books that reported receiving unusual betting interest on
the under on Porters points, rebounds, and three pointers and
assists in those two games in question. One of the
bets involved in eighty thousand dollars parlay that would have
paid one point one million. Now, I got to say,
this is one of those situations, and I don't believe
that was placed in Vegas. The best of my knowledge,
(01:54:07):
it was back East. I don't think there's any way
that bet.
Speaker 3 (01:54:10):
Would be approved here in Las Vegas. You look at it,
it smelts fishy, it looks fishy, and it was fishy.
So look, all it does is create a stain.
Speaker 2 (01:54:23):
But I will say this, I do believe we have
a very good set of checks and balances. So when
you go to a sporting event, it's certainly an NFL game,
when you go to a sporting event when you have
a situation where you are wondering if the outcome of
(01:54:43):
the game is the has the integrity been compromised. No,
I don't believe that at all. We joke about that
every now and then you'll hear a guy in the
back of.
Speaker 3 (01:54:51):
A sports book and you know a call will go
against him for some reason, and all of a sudden,
you hear somebody saying.
Speaker 1 (01:55:00):
This game's fixed.
Speaker 3 (01:55:02):
Right now, that's not happening. That's not happening.
Speaker 2 (01:55:06):
But what we do have our guard wheels. Now that
didn't exist before. We remember ten years ago, you didn't
have a lot of app betting because it really didn't exist.
You know, it was common to see guys walk to
the counter, see it myself, and open up a satchel
at lay fifty thousand bucks on the counter in cash.
Bet'sn't really prosecuted that way anymore. Most a lot of
(01:55:29):
certainly professional betters, they open up accounts and they open
up you know, you have to show your ID and
give your solid security number and if you deposit moneies
and things of that nature.
Speaker 3 (01:55:40):
But it's done electronically a lot now, which.
Speaker 2 (01:55:43):
Has led to something also known as bearding, which means
that a lot of players are opening up accounts under
someone else's name. But eventually, when you consider and there
are a lot of very reputable companies, will not a
lot but take us integrity run by my buddy Matt Holt.
They've got contracts with the major sports leagues, they got
contracts with the major college conferences, and anytime there's anything
(01:56:07):
that remotely looks unusual, it sets in motion a series
of events and the authorities are contacted. It was about
a year ago now they had that situation up in
Cincinnati where someone was making unusual of bets I think
on the Alabama baseball team and they ended up tracing
that all the way back to the coach. So tough
deal for Jontay Porter. He loses his livelihood. Now he
(01:56:30):
may lose his freedom as he's being charged with felony counts.
Something to continue to watch. Not the first time, probably
won't be the last time. But the world is not
coming to an end. And by the way, the NFL
right around the corner coming up. What kind of brand
new fool of you? And what my name? Keep it
locked right here? You are listening to the Bernie Frattle
Show on Fox Sports Radio. Well, that's right, you've heard
(01:56:55):
the man. The Bernie Fraddle Show keeps rolling right along.
My name is Bernie Fraddle. We're coming to a line
from the tirect dot com studios here in Las Vegas,
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (01:57:07):
Tirat dot com.
Speaker 2 (01:57:08):
We'll help you get there and that match selection, fast
free shipping, free roodation protection and over ten thousand recommended
installers tyraq dot com the way tire buying should be.
Will we've come to that juncture in the show. Every
Sunday morning, two am Pacific five am Eastern. You see,
(01:57:30):
we try to observe a lot here. On the Bernie
Frider Show, Jogibert once said, you can observe a lot
by watching, and that's exactly what we do. Because across
this great land of ours, and even around the world.
Speaker 3 (01:57:42):
Will people just do things.
Speaker 2 (01:57:44):
They engage in activities that oftentimes are well, sometimes they're
silly and innocuous. Other times they're more dangerous, other times
they're illegal. They can land you in jail. But any
way you slice it, any way, you size it up,
any way, you characterize it, anyway you describe it. All
of these events, all of these behaviors that people engage in,
(01:58:04):
they always leave us scratching our head and asking ourselves,
what kind.
Speaker 3 (01:58:09):
Of brand new fool are you?
Speaker 1 (01:58:16):
So, what kind of brand new fool are you?
Speaker 2 (01:58:20):
Well, we take you to Banger Main and we introduce
you to a forty one year old gentleman by the
name of Kevin Gray who ordered a ride share to
a local TJ Max. Well, nothing to see there except
he blapped the driver about how he was going to
rob the place. Yeah yeah, So the driver dropped him
(01:58:48):
off and then he reported the passenger to the authorities. Well,
the authorities ended up arriving fairly quickly.
Speaker 3 (01:58:58):
Mister Gray had hit the road.
Speaker 2 (01:59:00):
However, he was on a theft charge as well as
drug possession, warrants, violations, conditions and release, all kinds of things.
This guy had a hell of a body of work.
But officers spotted Gray as he tried to bolt from
the store and he was arrested after.
Speaker 3 (01:59:15):
Eight pre footchase. Police also said mister Gray had seven
sets of pre conditioned pre conviction bill conditions that banned
him from going to these businesses.
Speaker 2 (01:59:27):
He was not allowed to go to these businesses in
the first place. So you get a ride share to
a store in this case it was Tjmax. He's banned
from these businesses. He has all kinds of warrants, drug possessions,
violations of other matters. Why Because this was the twelfth
time that Kevin Gray was arrested this year, and he's
(01:59:51):
banned from going to multiple stores in the banger Main area,
which leads us again to ask the question, mister Kevin
Gray a Banger Main what kind of brand new fool
are you?
Speaker 3 (02:00:03):
All right? Mister chef?
Speaker 1 (02:00:05):
What do you got for us?
Speaker 6 (02:00:06):
All right?
Speaker 9 (02:00:06):
So we go north of the border where the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police are looking for an arsonist. Now, this
man looked like he appeared to try to set a
building on fire, but unfortunately for him, he also set
himself on fire. So the video shows him around with
his pants on fire. So I don't know what lie
(02:00:27):
he told right before this, because his pants were on fire,
and during the entire video, his accomplice is trying to
help him get out as he's rolling around on the ground,
and the video goes on for a good thirty seconds
to a minute, and when the video cuts out, his
pants are still on fire. So let's just say that
backfired to say the nicely done.
Speaker 3 (02:00:49):
Little wordplay for the chef. Nicely done.
Speaker 9 (02:00:52):
Good Unidentified man Unidentified arsonists in Richmond, British Columbia identified
what kind of ran new fooler?
Speaker 1 (02:01:00):
You?
Speaker 3 (02:01:01):
Is he a liar too? I'm just curious you don't.
Speaker 1 (02:01:02):
That's exactly what I want to know. What did he say?
Speaker 3 (02:01:05):
Well, because I did, he'd be liar.
Speaker 1 (02:01:06):
Pants on there, That's why I'm gonna live there.
Speaker 3 (02:01:09):
Yeah, look at this man. We're just killing it today.
Speaker 1 (02:01:11):
We're on fire.
Speaker 2 (02:01:15):
I heard later in the night he tried to blow
up a school bush here or what happened? What he
burned his lips on a tailpipe? Never mind? Two show
Saturday folks. All right, Shay, you're up, my man. You're
a veteran at this game.
Speaker 7 (02:01:27):
I really don't know how I'm gonna follow up that
wordplay because that was just that was amazing, guys.
Speaker 3 (02:01:32):
But all good.
Speaker 7 (02:01:34):
We're gonna be going to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
Speaker 6 (02:01:38):
Oh Stroudsburg, I I haven't heard of it. You've been there?
Speaker 2 (02:01:41):
Well, I played ball with a guy who had gone
to East Stroudsburg State Rocky continue on.
Speaker 6 (02:01:46):
A small world. Well anyway.
Speaker 7 (02:01:48):
Police in the Poconos say a man stole a handgum
from a shooting range on Thursday. Police were sent to
Pocono Pistol in Stroudsburg around twelve thirty pm Thursday for
a report of that of a firearm. According to a
news release from the stroud Area Regional Police Department, police
say a man came into Pokono Pistol and rented a
glockhand gun. When the man finished using the indoor shooting range,
(02:02:11):
he avoided employees and left the store with the firearm.
Speaker 6 (02:02:14):
But get this, Bernie.
Speaker 7 (02:02:16):
Officers were able to identify the man pretty quickly by
being thirty four year old Lawrence J. Handelvick had to
give his ID card to the place to even get
that handgun, so he basically left his ID at the
shooting range. And police say that on top of that,
(02:02:39):
he already has an arrest warrant and there was no
info on whether he was caught yet or not. But
that does lead me to say, mister Handelvich, what kind
of fool are you?
Speaker 3 (02:02:51):
Wow?
Speaker 2 (02:02:51):
A lot of layers there, and of course another one
of our suspects who has not just one crime but
a multiple body work. I'm glad you didn't say the
name Rocky because the only guy I knew from Eastrosburg,
his name is Rocky.
Speaker 3 (02:03:02):
Like you said, it is a small world.
Speaker 6 (02:03:04):
Right, Happy? Yeah, happy, it's not Rocky Happy.
Speaker 3 (02:03:06):
He's not Rocky.
Speaker 2 (02:03:07):
I played ball with him back in the day. And
of course it is a small world. But I wouldn't
want to have to paint it, all right. I was
begging for a laugh track there, all.
Speaker 3 (02:03:17):
Right, Good job guys, East Strosburg, Pennsylvania, north of the
border Canada, pants on fire and bangor Maine.
Speaker 6 (02:03:25):
No Florida.
Speaker 3 (02:03:26):
No.
Speaker 2 (02:03:26):
I was just thinking, that's what happened Florida.
Speaker 3 (02:03:29):
It took a week off, right, it was a holiday.
Speaker 6 (02:03:33):
No sports are going on.
Speaker 2 (02:03:36):
Another rousing edition of what kind of brand new food
a you, which now allows us to segue you do,
our second favorite bit that we lovingly refer to as
what my name?
Speaker 3 (02:03:51):
We go?
Speaker 2 (02:03:53):
At nineteen years old, I am the youngest winner of
the Heisman Trophy in history. Shane Mogngar, What my name?
Speaker 3 (02:04:04):
Hmmm?
Speaker 6 (02:04:07):
Oh wait, I know this, Lamar Jackson.
Speaker 3 (02:04:09):
Lamar Jackson knew that. I knew that.
Speaker 6 (02:04:13):
I thought I wasn't gonna know that.
Speaker 3 (02:04:15):
But you did know it? All right, Off and running, guys.
Speaker 2 (02:04:20):
I recently became the first rookie player in the w
NBA history with ten straight double doubles.
Speaker 3 (02:04:27):
Mark Ramsey, What my.
Speaker 6 (02:04:28):
Name is not Caitlin Clark?
Speaker 3 (02:04:34):
Is it?
Speaker 2 (02:04:35):
It is not Caitlin Clark, but I appreciate the effort.
Good guess I'm the first rookie player in w NBA
history with ten straight double doubles.
Speaker 3 (02:04:45):
Uh, Kevin Wyren't to chef? What my name?
Speaker 1 (02:04:48):
Angel Rees?
Speaker 3 (02:04:49):
It is? Of course Angel Rees. It's now up to
twelve double doubles, So it's true.
Speaker 2 (02:04:55):
Man having a really good rookie season. All right to
this stay my jersey is the number one seller for
the Double A Birmingham Barons baseball team.
Speaker 3 (02:05:09):
Shaye Mogengart, What my name.
Speaker 7 (02:05:11):
For the Double A Birmingham? Oh my god, they're the
number one seller. You know, I'm trying to think of
players that played on the Birmingham and.
Speaker 6 (02:05:20):
None of them are coming to my head. keV help
me out here, man.
Speaker 9 (02:05:23):
I don't think he's known for baseball as his career choice.
That's just gonna be my hint on this one.
Speaker 3 (02:05:29):
That is a hell of a good hint.
Speaker 1 (02:05:31):
His baseball is not his career, not his first career choice.
Speaker 9 (02:05:37):
I should say he was well, he was way more
famous for doing something other than baseball.
Speaker 7 (02:05:43):
Oh my god, I'm being dumb right now. Are we
talking about bo Did he play?
Speaker 2 (02:05:48):
You're on the right track both? Yeah, Yeah, you're on
the right track.
Speaker 9 (02:05:51):
I saw I saw him were of the jersey in
the movie. And that's the reason I probably know this well.
Speaker 3 (02:05:57):
I remember this story really well. All right, let's let's see.
Speaker 2 (02:06:00):
If the save Mark Rams can get it. To this day,
my jersey is still the number one seller of the
Double A Birmingham Barons Minor League baseball team, Mark.
Speaker 1 (02:06:10):
Ramsey, What my name is that Willie Mays?
Speaker 3 (02:06:13):
Is it not Willie Mays? Not Willie Mays.
Speaker 2 (02:06:16):
You know, let's see that's not a horrible guest because
Willie Mays was from Birmingham, Alabama. All right, Uh, the chef,
I gotta believe you're probably gonna spill the beans on
this one.
Speaker 9 (02:06:26):
You know, this one I'm lighting up the mj Bernie
is in fact Michael George.
Speaker 2 (02:06:33):
And by the way, you guys would really enjoy you
guys enjoyed those thirty for thirties.
Speaker 3 (02:06:37):
Yes, they're extremely well done.
Speaker 2 (02:06:41):
Well, this one's been out, you know, ten twelve years
because Jordan played minor league baseball Berningham in nineteen ninety four.
If Michael Jorge's the right answer, go ahead, Yeah, I
give you for flowers. It was during the nineteen ninety
four season. His manager was Terry Francona, who three years
(02:07:02):
later was the first base coach of the Detroit Tigers.
Terry's a great guy, talked to him many times. The
thirty four to thirty is called Jordan Rides the Bus.
Speaker 3 (02:07:10):
It's it's excellent, it's.
Speaker 2 (02:07:13):
Very entertaining, and I remember watching it when it was
going on and keeping track of it, and we actually
had when I was in Michigan the announcer, the play
by play guy that called Jordan's first ever minor league
home run the play by play.
Speaker 3 (02:07:27):
We had him on a couple of years later. So
it's been.
Speaker 2 (02:07:31):
Thirty years, but I got to tell you his story
still holds up, and so does so does the jersey sales.
Speaker 1 (02:07:36):
All right, remember watch seeing the jersey in space Jam.
Speaker 3 (02:07:38):
That's how I is that, right, Yeah, space Jam, Thanks
for the heads up on that. Yeah, I didn't see
any of the space Jams, but it was in that
When you're did space Jam come up?
Speaker 1 (02:07:47):
It was like ninety or ninety six?
Speaker 3 (02:07:48):
Okay, okay, very good.
Speaker 9 (02:07:50):
It was I think right after he came back. It
was supposed to be a funny way of explaining why
he came back to basketball is that after playing baseball, and.
Speaker 2 (02:07:58):
Of course Jordan came back just in time for the
ninety five playoffs. He was rusty, but right after that
they three peed it again.
Speaker 3 (02:08:05):
So there is that. All right. We have a Major
League Baseball All.
Speaker 2 (02:08:11):
Star Game coming up a week from this Tuesday. Oh no,
wait a minute, it is it is this Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (02:08:18):
No it's the sixteenth.
Speaker 3 (02:08:20):
I apologize, thank you. I'm all mixed up. I'm doing
two Mallord shows next week and I know it was
heading into the All Star Game, and I mixed up
my metaphors. Thanks chef.
Speaker 2 (02:08:27):
All right, so we do have an All Star Game
right around a corner coming up.
Speaker 3 (02:08:30):
Be it as it may. I on the only.
Speaker 2 (02:08:34):
Baseball player in history to hit a Grand Slam during
the Major League Baseball All Star Game.
Speaker 3 (02:08:41):
The chef Kevin Wire?
Speaker 1 (02:08:41):
What name I saw? And I can't remember his name?
Speaker 9 (02:08:44):
He played for the Angels, because I saw the highlight
video somewhere in the background with it on nute Somewhere.
Speaker 3 (02:08:51):
There's another hint.
Speaker 2 (02:08:52):
Yeah, I'm the only Major League baseball player in history
to hit a home run during the Major League Baseball
All Star Game.
Speaker 3 (02:09:00):
Shane Mogngar, what my name.
Speaker 8 (02:09:04):
Is?
Speaker 6 (02:09:04):
This was I alive?
Speaker 10 (02:09:06):
Well?
Speaker 2 (02:09:06):
Think it was like the early eighties if I recall
nineteen Okay, okay, hmmm, all right, no problem. I'm the
only Major League Baseball player to hit a Grand Slam
during the All Star Game.
Speaker 3 (02:09:23):
Mark Ramsey, what my name is it?
Speaker 1 (02:09:26):
Larry Doby?
Speaker 3 (02:09:27):
I love it because the last week nicely done. It's
not it's it's Freddy Lynn, fred Linn of the Angels.
You're right.
Speaker 2 (02:09:35):
They loaded the bases against that Lee Amicker and the
American League All Stars. I think we're on a losing
streak and they were pissed.
Speaker 3 (02:09:42):
They wanted to win.
Speaker 2 (02:09:42):
That game was played in Comiskey Park in your hometown, Mark,
and he hit it off of Attley Hammocker, the old
left handed for the San Francisco Giants, and that led
to like, I mean, they were up nine to three
by the end of the thirties something like that in
the America League in up propping.
Speaker 3 (02:09:58):
But Freddy Lynn is the answer. All right?
Speaker 2 (02:10:01):
We uh just had the NBA Draft. Brownie Jans was drafted.
But guess what, I am the only undrafted NBA player
in history to actually make it to the Hall of Fame,
the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Speaker 3 (02:10:17):
Uh, Kevin Wyre at the chef what my name?
Speaker 1 (02:10:19):
Who's undrafted?
Speaker 3 (02:10:21):
There's been a lot of very good to.
Speaker 1 (02:10:25):
Guess this one?
Speaker 3 (02:10:26):
All Right's all right?
Speaker 2 (02:10:27):
Yeah, but I'll tell you that guys like Fred Van Vliet,
John Starks, Connie Hawkins, so as they called her on.
There's a ton of been a ton of very good
undrafted NBA players who went on to have a pretty good.
Speaker 3 (02:10:39):
Pretty good career.
Speaker 2 (02:10:40):
All right, I'm the only undrafted NBA player to make
it to the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 3 (02:10:45):
Shaye Mognger. What my name?
Speaker 6 (02:10:48):
John is? John? Is it John Starks?
Speaker 2 (02:10:51):
Not John Starks? Although John Starks was undrafted, Yeah, was undrafted.
Had a pretty good career with the Knicks. I thought
had that one rough outing where he missed a bunch
of threes. But you know, Mama said there'd be daves
like this. All right, I'm the only, uh to this day,
the only undrafted NBA player to ever make it to
the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 3 (02:11:10):
Mark Ramsey. What my name?
Speaker 6 (02:11:13):
I'm guessing tiny Archibal.
Speaker 2 (02:11:16):
Oh, that's a good guess because I like the name.
Once again, a classic name coming out of the past.
Is actually Fear the fro Ben Wallace two thousand and
four Pistons team that I covered.
Speaker 3 (02:11:26):
That beat the Lakers.
Speaker 6 (02:11:27):
He was undrafted.
Speaker 3 (02:11:29):
He was undrafted Piston's player, right, Pistons guys. He was terrific, terrific.
Good dude too. I liked him a lot. All right, we're.
Speaker 2 (02:11:36):
Getting ready to start college football, guys. There is currently
only three active college football coaches that won a national championship.
Speaker 3 (02:11:46):
But I'm the last one to do it. Uh, the
chef Kevin Wirret what my name?
Speaker 9 (02:11:53):
Last active college football coach to win a national championship?
Speaker 3 (02:11:58):
Exactly right? Well said, so.
Speaker 1 (02:12:01):
Was Michigan this year? Who won it the year before?
I'm gonna damn it. It's blanking on me. It's not.
Speaker 2 (02:12:10):
It's not Dablosweeney, but but your deductive reasoning was serving
you well for a while there. All right, there are
only one they're checking out. There are only three remaining
active college football coaches who won a national championship.
Speaker 3 (02:12:24):
But I'm the last one to do it. Shaan Ogangar
what my name?
Speaker 7 (02:12:29):
Okay, so I'm gonna go back. I'm gonna Sabin and
then urban Meyer, I stay, he's the NFL.
Speaker 6 (02:12:41):
No, and then Bob Stoops. So all right, this is
all You aren't easy, This is a good question.
Speaker 3 (02:12:51):
I'm only a one of.
Speaker 2 (02:12:55):
Hang ont' le's see if let's see if Mark Ramsey
can get it. There are only three active on football
coaches who won a national championship.
Speaker 3 (02:13:02):
I'm the last one to do it. Mark Ramsey with my.
Speaker 1 (02:13:04):
Name, I don't know his name, but is the guy
from Georgia who.
Speaker 3 (02:13:09):
Went to Okay, okay, the joke, finish it off.
Speaker 1 (02:13:12):
God Kirby and he's much smarter than.
Speaker 3 (02:13:17):
You guys, got it. That's he ended up getting it. See.
Speaker 2 (02:13:20):
I came up with this question because remember save It
and and Harbor both left the college games down to
three Kirby dabbles.
Speaker 1 (02:13:28):
I don't know how I blanked on Georgia.
Speaker 6 (02:13:30):
And Georgia dominated that year too.
Speaker 1 (02:13:32):
Yeah, that was like they'd beat TCU drum.
Speaker 3 (02:13:35):
They did. They smashed him. They smashed Michigan too the
year before.
Speaker 2 (02:13:41):
All Right, moving along, I recently became the first rookie
in in w NBA history to record a double double.
And I'm talking to I don't okay, let me do
that again. I screwed it up.
Speaker 3 (02:13:57):
I recently became the first in NBA history to record
a triple double. The chef Kevin Wyre.
Speaker 1 (02:14:05):
What my name Caitlyn Clark.
Speaker 3 (02:14:07):
It is Caitlyn Clark, and she did it Saturday night
against the best team in the NBA. I'm a WNBA,
But you know.
Speaker 2 (02:14:14):
They're always picking on Caitlin Clark for her turnovers. I
think it's a little unfair, but you may find it
interesting to know that in the history the National Basketball Association,
I've committed more turnovers than anybody in history.
Speaker 3 (02:14:30):
Sham Ogengar. What my name?
Speaker 7 (02:14:33):
So it's a longtime player. Uh, I'm gonna say Shack.
Speaker 2 (02:14:44):
Not Shack, but good guess all right, In the history
of the National Basketball Association, I've committed more turnovers than
any other player in history.
Speaker 3 (02:14:54):
Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 1 (02:14:58):
Magic Johnson, not Agia Johnson.
Speaker 3 (02:15:01):
I am.
Speaker 2 (02:15:02):
In the NBA history, I've committed more turnovers than anybody
else in the game.
Speaker 3 (02:15:09):
The chef Kevin Wire, what my name?
Speaker 1 (02:15:11):
Lebron James.
Speaker 3 (02:15:12):
It is, in fact, Lebron James.
Speaker 6 (02:15:13):
That's easy.
Speaker 3 (02:15:14):
It is in fact Lebron and James.
Speaker 6 (02:15:20):
Is at the top for every stat Seriously.
Speaker 2 (02:15:23):
Well you damn near. I mean sure, you be sure?
Think about that right? Our last one. You guys are gonna.
Speaker 3 (02:15:30):
Get this one. This one's this one's a softball. So
we just talked about the Celtics maybe being sold. We
just talked about them winning their first championship since two
thousand and eight, and they're coached by Joe Missoula. But
the last time the Celtics won an NBA championship, I
was the head coach Mark Ramsey. What my name.
Speaker 6 (02:15:50):
Is his first name Casey?
Speaker 3 (02:15:52):
Not Casey, but you're thinking of Casey Jones back in
the eighties. Good guess.
Speaker 2 (02:15:56):
The last time the Celtics before this year won the
NBA Championship two thousand and eight. I was the head coach,
Shay Morgan guard what my name.
Speaker 6 (02:16:09):
I'm trying to think last time they won? Who was it?
Speaker 3 (02:16:15):
All right? It's pretty liberal with the buzzer there? Has
it been five seconds?
Speaker 6 (02:16:20):
Definitely has been five all right.
Speaker 2 (02:16:24):
The last time before this season at the Celtics won
an NBA championship was two thousand and eight, and I
was the head coach, the chef Kevin wired what.
Speaker 1 (02:16:32):
We are still getting coaching jobs because of it?
Speaker 3 (02:16:34):
Doc Rivers, I get the biggest kick out Jason Smith.
You guys were Jason's this year when he makes fun
of Doc Rivers. Yeah, oh, that is so classic. I
never get tired of hearing that. All right, great job, guys,
great job tonight on brand new fool and of course,
what my name the grateful nation. We'll have to wait
till next Saturday night, Sunday morning, two am, five am,
(02:16:56):
when we do it again.
Speaker 2 (02:16:58):
And we will do it again, speaking to do it again. Hey,
Lakers guard Bronnie James, he ain't done. The summer League
is just getting started. You want to know how to
keep watching Bronnie James in the summer League. Hey, we're
gonna tell you.
Speaker 3 (02:17:11):
Come it up. Get those pins and pencils ready.
Speaker 2 (02:17:14):
I'm Bernie Fraddlewick Comedy Live from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio,
Tyreck dot Com Studios.
Speaker 3 (02:17:18):
Keep it locked, Bernie fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio. All right,
back on the Bernie Frattle Show.
Speaker 2 (02:17:23):
By the way, in about thirteen hours, you can see
Bronnie James play again three thirty Pacific, six thirty Eastern
against the Golden State Warriors.
Speaker 3 (02:17:33):
It'll be on NBA TV.
Speaker 2 (02:17:36):
Coming up, Chris Perfet's World of Soccer. He's got a
thing or two to say about the coaching situation. But
first we go back to our guy, the chef, Kevin
Wyant with the latest.
Speaker 9 (02:17:43):
Yeah, in soccer, we do have a big tournament's going on,
both Copa America and the Euro twenty twenty four Championships.
Brazil out of the tournament, Uruguay beats some on penalty
kicks into the quarterfinals, to Uruguay advancing to the Semi
Columbia shutting up Panama five nail. So Columbia is still
undefeated in its last twenty seven games. And on the
(02:18:06):
European side, it's England winning their quarterfinal on penalty kicks
against Switzerland, while the Netherlands comes from behind to eliminate
Turkey two to one. So we'll hear more about that
from Chris Purfett in just a few minutes. In the NBA,
DeMar DeRozan going west as the Sacramento Kings, landing the
NBA superstar on a sign in trade, Harrison Bards going
(02:18:30):
at the Spurs, and Sacramento gonna have DeRozan on a
three year, seventy four million dollars contract. In a Major
League Baseball Dodgers over the Brewers five to three to
win their second consecutive game against Milwaukee, Shoeotani going deep
for his twenty eighth home run of the season. The
(02:18:51):
Braves over the Philadelphia Phillies five to one. The Guardians
get by the San Francisco Giants five to four, the
Angels getting an outstanding start from Tyler Anderson eight shutout
innings as they blinked the Cubs seven to nothing. The
Athletics putting on an offensive clinic against the Orioles at
an empty Oakland Coliseum, maybe five hundred fans in a
tendance to see the A's demolished the O's nineteen to eight.
(02:19:14):
The Nationals beat up the Saint Louis Cardinals fourteen to six,
and the Yankee snapping of four game losing streak beating
the Boston Red Sox fourteen to four. As Ben Rice,
the rookie for the Bronx Bombers, sitting three home runs
and getting himself seven runs batted in. And as for
the MLB All Star rosters, the full rosters will be
revealed on Sunday. In tennis, igosviatek out at the Wimbledon.
(02:19:41):
At the Wimbledon tournament, he lost in three sets, while
Novak Djokovic advanced in his fourth advances to the fourth round.
Speaker 2 (02:19:51):
Back to you, Bernie, all right, thanks Jef, great performance tonight.
Speaker 3 (02:19:54):
Appreciate it, Bud.
Speaker 2 (02:19:57):
Obviously, the Copoa America didn't end the way any soccer
fan wanted it to here in the United States. And yes,
you can be sure Chris Purfett's got a thing or
two to say about that.
Speaker 3 (02:20:07):
That's why we bring you.
Speaker 2 (02:20:09):
At this time christ Prophet's World of Soccer, the greatest goals,
the thrilling finishes, the international drama.
Speaker 4 (02:20:29):
It's all here in this report from the world of Soccer.
Speaker 10 (02:20:32):
Where do we start, Bernie, I feel like I want
to follow the words of Ben Maller that the best
stories are in the losing locker room.
Speaker 1 (02:20:38):
We could talk about Spain.
Speaker 10 (02:20:40):
We could talk about how they have five straight wins
the first time ever getting over the hosts of Germany.
That's fantastic and I love what Spain has done. I
love what France has done in euros euro ratings are skyrocketing.
European Championship is the most watched, one of the most
watched things of the summer, and it is remarkable. On Fox,
(02:21:00):
I would like to talk about Christiano Ronaldo and the
poor performance he has shown in European Championship, including a
very grim refusal to be on the field and comfort
Wajo Felix after his miss the only Portuguese player to
miss penalty kicks which leads them to exit European Championship
(02:21:25):
against France. Every other Portuguese player came over there to
comfort Felix.
Speaker 1 (02:21:29):
It was a remarkable scene.
Speaker 10 (02:21:30):
But Rinaldo was headed completely for the exits at that time.
Speaker 1 (02:21:34):
Rinaldo, of course, had.
Speaker 10 (02:21:36):
Been missing penalties earlier in this competition, and Rinaldo's arrogance
is kind of the reason Portugal is leaving European Championship,
rather than his spot going to someone more younger, more youthful.
In a lot of this team still acquiescing to the
demands of Ronaldo. But no, I won't even have time
for that. I'm going to leave that right here. I'm
going to just talk about the US men's team. And
(02:21:59):
I know we've talked about the US men's team a lot,
but this is a disaster. This is an unmitigated disaster.
We talked about what they had it to do, had
to do against Uruguay to move on to the knockout
round of Copa America, and Uruguay put the US men's
team right back in their place. Panama is moving onto
(02:22:19):
the knockout round. Canada is moving onto the knockout round.
Canada is moving onto that round. The US is going
home in a competition they host in stadiums that were
their fans. Everything was in their favor, and two losses,
two losses superseded that Bolivia opener win that everyone went
(02:22:44):
nuts about and started talking about the talent, and it
really reinforces these past two wins. The worst aspects of
the US men's team Number one their ability to get
stimmied by Conka caff opponents. Since October twenty first, twenty
twenty one, the US has only won once against Panama
in four competitions, two losses and a draw that resulted
(02:23:07):
in a loss on penalties. And Uruguay one of the
top hottest teams coming into Copa America. And I've heard
constantly about Greg Berhalter's record against the best nations out there,
about how in all these competitions, how his teams rise
to the moment. They well, they didn't rise to it
against Uruguay. They certainly didn't rise to it when all
(02:23:29):
they need to do is match Panama on points, when
Uruguay had no reason to bowl them over, and yet
Uruguay bowled them over. This is a team that looks
completely lost when they can control the ball. This is
a team whose touches in the midfield, and any soccer
expert will tell you that the midfield is where you
live and die as a soccer team have gone completely
(02:23:50):
off the reservation.
Speaker 1 (02:23:52):
Down, down, down.
Speaker 10 (02:23:54):
It is bleak right now, and it has brought out
everyone to scramble and really do some searching. Not just
about this US men's team. There's a lot of soul
searching to be done there about why the talent that
is supposed to be greater than the previous generation isn't
showing up. Where's jiovonnie Reina. Where's Christian Pulisich the supposed leader.
(02:24:15):
Why is Baligan, a man who's only been on the
team since May, the one with most of the goals
in this tournament?
Speaker 1 (02:24:21):
Where is this? Where is that?
Speaker 10 (02:24:22):
Why did Timothy Way draw a red card? But it
also has brought on questions about, say, the entire US
Federation and how they're going to probably backber Halter in
spite of a massive declining, declining output in in success.
And it's even coming on a referendum about how the
(02:24:45):
culture of soccer is in the United States itself. I
have heard many people start to talk once again, including
on Fox Sports Fox Sports Radio, about the nature of
travel soccer. Are we even getting the best talent in
sports in this country too come play soccer? And we
are realizing that as long as you are charging one
(02:25:05):
thousand dollars a year, you are probably not. No football
isn't taking away the best soccer talent the America can offer.
No baseball and basketball aren't taking away the best talent
soccer could offer. Let me tell you something, Lionel Messi
is not playing in the NFL at five foot four.
That talent is out there. But as many other countries,
(02:25:26):
including England, have discovered, when you put price tags on soccer,
it had completely destroys access to those teams. England realized
that their dominance in the sport was completely at at
harold if they did not start to subsidize more their federation.
(02:25:46):
They realized that it had to be free and open
to people to come in, and that is not something
that exists in the US. We completely cut out the
working class, We completely cutting out the lower income classes
when it comes to acts to youth soccer in this country.
And that has long reaching implications, twenty plus year implications
(02:26:09):
that the US is reaping right now, and it is exhausting.
It's exhausting to come here once again, and a loss
like this becomes exhausting. Dealing with soccer skeptics, people who
will Dack extremely smug and talk about how the US
will never be a soccer nation because we don't like
this strange, weird foreign sport. That is completely wrong and
(02:26:30):
that is disproven completely as you look at these skyrocketing
ratings for European champions on Fox. But a loss like
this brings all the people out of the woodwork, and
it is a bunch of smug grandpas sitting around talking
about this strange little sport, how it will never catch on.
Speaker 1 (02:26:49):
It is this, that and the other thing.
Speaker 10 (02:26:51):
And it's exhausting dealing with those people because they're just
not serious. They're not serious about anything. But you know
who's also not serious is this US men's team to
actually show you some success Americans. And I am quoting
from Joe Dumars talking who talked to me about the
Detroit sports scene one time. Joe Dumars, the Detroit bad
boy turned general manager who brought them a championship in
(02:27:11):
two thousand and four. It's not that they're front runners,
but they will only respect you if you can put
a winner on the field, and the US team refuses
to do so once again, to talk about how this
team could have been so much more it's exhausting to
talk about how the US Soccer Federation is a good
old boys club that will look at this loss by
(02:27:33):
Greg Borhlter and maybe there's a change between before twenty
twenty six that everyone sees as desperately needed in this
team's identity, certainly in some of the players that are
on the field. But to be honest, people who cover
this sport are just crestfallen at this idea that's just
not going to happen, and that is brutal. That will
(02:27:56):
kill things more than anything else in this country for
the sport, and it will kill the love of US
soccer for everyone, for everyone. I can't trust these guys.
I can't trust this team right now that I am watching,
I don't know who they are. I don't They refuse
to play up to their competition, they refuse to show bite,
(02:28:19):
and as soon as they they they are a ball
possession team, and as soon as they can't control the ball,
they seem to shrivel up and curl up in the corner.
Speaker 1 (02:28:27):
I can't. I can't respect that.
Speaker 10 (02:28:30):
I just cannot, and I cannot respect a coach who
remains here after multiple high high profile losses the way
he has. I mentioned Panama that that loss and penalties
that was for the Gold Cup. All right, you've you've
let Panama remove you from major competitions twice. Now, that's
that's unacceptable. The Jamaica draw was unacceptable. It's becoming more
(02:28:56):
frustrating to talk about this team. It's becoming more frustrating
to look at all the promises, all that people say
this team should do, and then when they go out
and don't do and that is why change has to
happen or else this could be a complete footnote to
people just once again watching the European teams in this country.
(02:29:17):
I'm sorry I've gone long here, Bernie. We'll see you
next time on the World of Soccer.
Speaker 2 (02:29:22):
No sense sugarcoating it coming up.
Speaker 3 (02:29:26):
Well, we just had the fourth of July holiday.
Speaker 2 (02:29:29):
Many famous people were born on the fourth of July,
and I want to give flowers to one in particular,
one I know that Andy Furman will be very familiar with.
And you know, on July fourth it rouses up memories
of baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, and beach balls.
Speaker 3 (02:29:50):
I will glue together when we come back. I'm Bernie Fradder.
Speaker 2 (02:29:53):
We're coming to a liar from the Las Vegas Fox
Sports Radio Tarek dot Com studios. Keep it locked. You're
listening to the Bernie fratter Show on Fox Sports Radio.
All right, we're wrapping it up on the Bernie Frattles Show.
Before I go any further, I want to thank my
broadcast team.
Speaker 3 (02:30:07):
I'm back in Los Angeles.
Speaker 2 (02:30:09):
They've been with me since eleven pm Pacific time on
Saturday night. Mark Ramsey, our technical producer, turning all the Donalds,
keeping us glued together, and of course, said Moganngard, our
executive producer, Guy's great job tonight, brand newfool.
Speaker 3 (02:30:24):
What my name is the chef Kevin Wyrett on the updates?
Outstanding teamwork as always.
Speaker 2 (02:30:30):
By the way, I'll be back on these airwaves Thursday night,
sitting in for Ben Maller, and we'll have some fun.
A lot of famous people born on the fourth of July,
but one in particular. It is synonymous with baseball, hot
dogs and apple pie.
Speaker 3 (02:30:42):
And yes, beach balls.
Speaker 2 (02:30:44):
You know sometimes people go to baseball games and they
bat beach balls around in the stands. Well, this leads
to my story. First of all, happy belated birthday to MORGANA.
Roberts born in July fourth, nineteen forty seven, and you
know her as Morgana the Kissing Bandit. For a three
decade period, she was synonymous with baseball as much as
(02:31:05):
Pete Rose and George Bratt, who, of course, were two
of her quote victims. Pete Rose was her first back
in August in nineteen sixty nine, Morgana's girlfriend dared her
to run on with the field and kissed one of
the players, and Pete Rose was the first quoting victim,
and the rest is history. For the next thirty years,
three decades, she had over seventy three such victims. And
(02:31:30):
it wasn't just baseball, it was basketball. Kareem Abdul Jabbar,
but she had Johnny Bench, Nolan Ryan, Steve Garvey, cowrickn
just to name a few. George Brett was the only
when she kissed twice. She actually got the San Diego
Chicken one night, who famously told her quote, kiss me
on the cheek, it's more sanitary and my wife won't
get mad. Obviously, her stats, which she flaunted sixty twenty
(02:31:53):
three thirty six, they were her calling card. They made
her recognizable, they made her popular. I fortunately got to
see a live performance Morgana one night.
Speaker 3 (02:32:05):
Yes it was a beauty.
Speaker 2 (02:32:07):
It's actually a day game in Anaheim Stadium, Angel Stadium
June in nineteen eighty three. Freddy Lynn was the culprit.
And here's where the story to me gets so funny.
As I told you, people baseball games and sometimes they
do the wave, they sit on the phone, they drink
wine coolers, and they bat beach balls around. So Freddie
(02:32:29):
Lynn was walking up to bat one day and he says,
as I was heading to the plate, I heard all
sorts of cat calls behind me, and I know what
is going on? Felt something weird. He knew something was up,
and he said, I figured it could only be one
of two things. Either there was a fight in the
stands or beach balls. And I turned around and sure enough.
Speaker 3 (02:32:54):
It was beach balls. Mark.
Speaker 2 (02:33:02):
That was Morgana. She was born July fourth, one of
the many Luminaries that were born on July fourth, and
Morgan Morgana had a really interesting life.
Speaker 3 (02:33:12):
And the reason I wish I should have had.
Speaker 2 (02:33:14):
Andy fermannhon because this back in nineteen sixty nine, the
Reds were still playing at Crosley Field, and that's when
Morgana's best friend dared her to kiss one of the players.
It just happened to be Pete Rose, and a fuse
was lit, and I understand Rose was upset at first
cussed her out, but the next day regrouped in cent
her flowers. And for the next thirty years, Morgana became
(02:33:39):
a thing. And you know, she was really liked, I
think by a lot of people and actually had really
quite a life around that, because her notoriety got to
the point where she was even on the Johnny Carson Show.
She was on Late Night with David Letterman. She occasionally
(02:34:02):
hosted a show in the Ohio called Good Morning Columbus,
which is a local TV talk show, and Morgana even
appeared on as a mystery guest on that old this
goes back to nineteen seventy eight game show called to
Tell the Truth Right, and the truth of the matter is.
Morgana became sort of a fixture in the you know,
(02:34:24):
lexicon known as our pastime, which was Major League baseball,
and I think baseball historians fans all kind of acknowledge
she'll always be remembered as sort of a unique addition
to baseball. In July fourth, over six hundred thousand fans
ten games every year, and Morgana was born on July fourth.
(02:34:45):
Interestingly enough, once she shut things down in nineteen ninety nine,
that was her career August Is sixty nine.
Speaker 3 (02:34:52):
To nineteen ninety nine. She was done.
Speaker 2 (02:34:55):
She was done, never to return. Somehow, the USA Today
got her to make a I say this in Air
quotes a public appearance in August of twenty nineteen, which
coincided with the fiftieth anniversary the first time she ever
ran out of the field. She did a phone interview
with USA Today on that fiftieth anniversary of Wherever You
(02:35:18):
First Ever on Field Kiss with Pete Rose, and during
that interview she affirmed Morgana affirmed that she is definitely retired.
So while Americans were enjoying the Fourth of July at
the ballpark this past year baseball, hot dogs, apple pie,
and beach balls, well there was no Morgana. She very
(02:35:41):
quietly turned seventy seven years old. She lives alone in
Ohio and no longer gives interviews. But for one day
I got to see Morgana do her deal, and Freddie
Lynn was very funny about it, and I just recognized
just this last week that he even tweeted out that day.
Speaker 3 (02:35:58):
I didn't know.
Speaker 2 (02:35:59):
I checked it out, and yes, I can honestly say
I was there. It's gonna do for the Bernie Frattle
Show now, by the way, like I said, I will
be on these airways Thursday night. Ben Maller will be
taking the night off, so we'll have a lot of
fun and it'll be the night before Bronnie makes his
debut in the Las Vegas Summer League NBA Summer League,
(02:36:19):
so we'll have plenty to talk about as usual. So
that's gonna do for the Bernie Fradle Show tonight. Keep
it locked up next, They're great. Andy Furman on Fox
Sports Radio,
