Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Well, that's right, you heard the man. It is that
time of week. My name is Bernie Franner. We are
coming to you live from the tyraq dot com studios
here in Las Vegas. Fox Sports Radio, tyraq dot com.
We'll help you get there an unmatched selection, fast free
shipping for you, Rodazard Protection and over ten thousand recommended

(00:24):
installers tyrack dot com. The way tire buying should be.
If I hear a comparison between the men's Olympic basketball
team that we're sending to Paris and the Dream Team
one more time, I'm taking a hostage. Although someone did
ask me last week about the ninety two team, which

(00:45):
I saw close and personal. They asked me if I
thought this version of the team that Colin and everybody
else wants to shove down our throat as being this
unreal collection of talent, which they may be on paper. Okay,
could they beat that ninety two Olympic team? Somebody asked
me that. I said, oh, yeah, they could beat him.

(01:06):
But you got to remember most of those guys who
are in their sixties now hold that thought. I'll give
a more objective view of this in a minute. There
were three basketball games today that I had marked as
appointment viewing, and we talked about this heavily on my
show Friday night during the midnight hour, and today once

(01:29):
again proved something I've said a thousand times. Sports continues
to be the greatest reality show and you can script
everything but the ending. The first one that I had,
believe it or not, was the four pm Pacific game
the NBA Summer League, and I wanted to see the
Broni brigade continue. He didn't play. No big deal, that

(01:50):
stand and operated procedure. Typically draft choices don't play in
the final Summer League game. Onward and upward we'll talk
about that with Mark Madeen at midnight. Nothing to see there.
The w NBA All Star Game was absolute appointment viewing,
which again we talked about heavily on my show Friday Night.
In this era of All Star games that have jumped

(02:12):
the shark because they're boring and gratuitous and non competitive,
that was a real contest Saturday Night. That was a
real throwback with real storylines. Hold that thought. We're going
to get to that later in the show a little
bit later. And then there was the USA versus South Sudan.
And somebody said to me, well, you know, maybe a

(02:33):
loss by a whoke abab bob, you know a good loss.
I said, no, no, no, no, there's no such thing as
a good loss. There's no such thing as a good
kidney stone either. So whoever told you that? And you
decided to repeat it so you can impressure your friends
at the water cooler get rid of that one. Okay? No,
but and by the way, it should that have happened,

(02:55):
would it? You don't want doubt to ever creep in
for any reason. You don't want to end your mind.
But I'm gonna tell you don't overreact to this, please please,
It's just it's it becomes one of those situations where
the conversation is going to take on the life of
its own because this twelve man USA roster is filled

(03:16):
with a lot of some of the current great NBA talent,
while only four members of the South Sudan team have
ever even played just one NBA game, But that South
Sudan team played the world number one ranked team. By
the way, Sudan is ranked thirty third. They hit sixty
one percent of their shots in the first half. USA

(03:39):
only made one three pointer. Okay, what happened here? What
do I really think happened? I think they took the
floor of these players. We're in the area of load
management and drinking wine in the second row and looking
cool and saying stupid things and switching teams. You don't
like the team you're on, that's the error. So they

(04:01):
showed up on the you know today and they said, look,
we got some light work today, forty three and a
half point favorites. What are we worried about? Let's not
sweat this thing. And they got an unexpected challenge from
a team that proved, you know what, a star might
win you one game, but a team might win them all.
And a couple of guys mariy Olshaiaki had twenty five

(04:21):
points for South Sudan and JT Thor hit a three
pointer he's seen time with the Charlotte Hornets to put
the team ahead by one, and Lebron James after the game.
So this is better than blowouts. At least we got tested.
I like getting tested, baby good, because we always want
to have that Lebron quote. But you know, fair enough,
you really weren't tested. You tested yourself to see if

(04:42):
you could show up and realize that this might not
be an unexpected challenge. Maybe you're not that mature. After all,
this team from South Sudan got a lot of respect.
Do I think they'll eaven make it to the medal round? No,
I don't. But but what they did Saturday got everybody attention.
And at the end Team USA they fed it off

(05:06):
a good looking, strong, South suit An team which I
don't think I'll make it to the medal round. They
came back for fourteen points down. Lebron did get the
game winning layup, cleared the guy with his arm and
made no mistake. In the final position, Anthony Edwards mulled
the guy they went up for a layup, But you're
not going to make that call. So the question is
now where do we go from here? For? Yeah, where

(05:27):
do we go from here? This Olympic team, all right,
they faced a team Saturday that was severely undermanned. But
they were resourceful, and they were athletic, and they were
aggressive and they were well coached. So what does it
all mean? Pee wee? Where do we go from here?
On a home dinner maybe a show? Where we go
from here is when the US team decides they need

(05:49):
to play desperate, they will. That's exactly what they'll do,
and no one will remember this game when the USA
wins the gold medal four weeks from now, whenever the
hell the final game is going to be all right,
they still are able to put forth the rotations when

(06:10):
they need them. They have more depth than anybody else.
When they decide they really want to, they'll apply significant
defensive pressure. Even though the international game is a team
game and the USA plays a single man game, They're
gonna out athlete the world. They're gonna win their one
on one battles. They're not a great team, but they
got a collection of misfit toys that Steve Kerr has

(06:32):
been saddled with. And I heard someone say they thought
Steve Krusse should be fired. Maybe it's tongue in cheek,
Maybe it's tongue in cheak. I think Steve Kurs should
get a raise to have to put up with these knuckleheads.
He is the one that put the backups on the floor,
which began the comeback. What's he gonna do? Make them
run laps, yell at him, pull the Bobby Night routine. No,

(06:53):
he's not gonna do any of that. I've told you
a hundred times on the show, Chuck Day once told
me that coaching a team in the NBA is all
about managing an adult daycare center. And he didn't say
it in the pejorative. What he meant was, these guys
are all grown men, or if you know, you want
to sound cool that they say they have grown ass men,
grown ass men. That makes you sound cool in some circles.

(07:16):
But they are growing men, and they're accomplished, and they're rich,
very rich. And your job when you walk through that
door is to get them to like you and maybe
respect you, and play hard for you and put up
with you and now talk about you behind your back.
It's the old Billy Martin thing. Billy Martin was successfully
He said, you know, I got twenty twenty five men
on a roster. Ten like you, ten hate you. Five

(07:39):
can make up their mind. Your job is to keep
the five who can't make up their mind from the
ten who hate you. Your job as an NBA coach, manager, advisor,
whatever you want to call it, it's to stay out
of the way, but have enough of a presence to
where they'll listen to you sometimes and they'll play hard
for you sometimes and when they need to get desperate,

(08:02):
like the USA team did in the second half, Steve
Currow did something, I mean, changed their rotations. You should
be able to okay. Finally, the US entered the fourth
quarter with an eighty one seventy six advantage, and at
that point you thought they might win by double digits.
And they finished the third quarter they started to get

(08:24):
their confidence. Joel Embiid made a layup. By the way,
this should maybe send Joel Embid home. I don't think
the international game for him. Put Donovan kling him on
the team. Lebron hit him with a Nola pass, and
after scoring only twenty points in the second quarter, the
US outscored the South Houdan thirty seven eighteen and the
third they got their footing back and then they started
to play with their food again. The USA did South Houdin.

(08:48):
They pushed back throughout the fourth quarter. The Americans held
out of the lead to the final seconds and he
saw the final two possessions. Lebron iso the guy cleared
him with his hand, got a layup. Great against the guy.
He'll never be in the NBA. But he didn't The
team Lebron did lead the team with twenty three points,
and frankly, he may be the adult in the room
that this team needs. They're gonna win the gold medal. Okay,

(09:08):
I saw what they did to Canada here in Las
Vegas about a week and a half ago. That was
a really good game. Canada is really good and the
USA it didn't play together and they went by fourteen.
That's the kind of effort you'll see, I think when
they need to. But they're gonna take their foot off
the gas and put their foot back on the gas

(09:29):
and play with their food and do what they do.
And there'll be you know, people who want to fire
Steve Kerr and they want to do this, and at
at the end of the day, this would be the
biggest anti climactic thing you've ever seen. And oh, by
the way, like I always do, he and my guys
save the sound bite. So if the end of beginning
beating the metal round or something, I'll eat my humble piet.
But I'm not gonna have to, because the reality of

(09:50):
it is, they know, if the team just knows that
they have an extra gear, that the rest of the
teams in the tournament, maybe Canada. But you saw what
happened Canada through their best bunch at USA here. They
really did and they're by the way, they're a very
good team. Serbia they're okay, Germany's pretty good. But forget it.

(10:12):
No one will remember today. They won't and so everybody,
you know, take it easy. Calm down, lay down, get
yourself some warm milk and soft music, get yourself a
cold compress. They won by one, and it wouldn't have
mattered if they'd have lost either, because the games don't
count right now. And that's how this man's NBA is.

(10:32):
They come and go as they please, whether you like
it or not. But they'll get the gold medal because
they're deeper, more athletic, perhaps more talented, more physical the
athlete they got, the depth, they got, the rotation, and
Steve Kerr didn't forget how to coach. Remember he's not
coaching anyway, Like I said, he's managing an adult daycare center.

(10:53):
Coming up, it's time to look toward college football.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
I got to tell you man, it's here, folks. And
by the way, we're gonna get to a lot of
NFL stuff tonight too, believe it or not. A week
from next Thursday, we get the Hall of Fame game,
but we're bringing Brad Powers at Brad Power Sports. One
of the most knowledgeable, hardworking is a human computer. And look,
there are some notable absences this year. One of the
things I want to talk about Alabama. Nick Saban is

(11:21):
no longer there, but believe it or not, you can
still get Alabama plus nine hundred to win the SEC.
Howell Michigan be without Jim Harbor and JJ McCarthy. Is
it too early to handicap the Heisman Trophy race? Nope?
All the above will rifle shoot some things as it's
time to start to turn our attention to football. I'm

(11:44):

All right back on the Bernie Frattle Show Fox Sports Radio.
We are company line from the Trek dot Com studios
here in Las Veigs. We'll take you up to three
am Pacific six AMAS. We're just getting started, so welcome
in a gentleman. I put this gentleman up against anybody
in the country when it comes to preparation knowledge, hands
on knowledge, and his ability to look deep into a

(13:04):
situation and give you terrific analysis. Proud to have known
them for about twelve years. You find them at bradpowerssports
dot Com. Say hello to the college football guru, Brad Powers. Brad,
how are you, buddy?

Speaker 6 (13:17):
Excellent nine to intro for me. I'm pumped up now
I'm ready for the season, Bernie.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
After that, well, well deserved, Brad. I've known you a
long time, and hell, we could do the whole four hours.
So I'll have to rifle shoot because I kind of
want to start at the top. One of the big
storylines this year is no Nick Saban, and I am
one of the few that doesn't think there's going to
be much of a precipitous fall at Alabama. But yet
you look at them, their plus nine hundred to win

(13:43):
the SEC. How do you not take a fly around that?

Speaker 6 (13:46):
Well, I have because we haven't seen Alabama with that
long of odds to win the SEC since about two
thousand and eight did so I'm go back to Nick
Saban's second season. Last time you've seen Alabama with deepets
odds and wins, it was only nine and a half
and it shaded towards the unders. So you're right, not
much is expected, at least comparatively speaking from compared to

(14:08):
the last fifteen years for Alabama this year, and then,
you know, I kind of agree with you. I'm now
when the Nick Saban news originally broke that there was
a lot of collegeootball markets still available at that time, Bernie.
And you know, at that time, Alabamas roster was open
to the transfer portal. Everybody else's was closed. So I
thought that that roster get rated more than what it was.

(14:29):
So I went from a position of being kind of
anti Alabama back let's say, in February March, to now
that the dust is settled, everything settled in a little bit,
I am more pro Alabama at this point.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
Yeah, just every so quickly. Look, Caitlin Debora, I'm a
big fan of his offense. Has not only moved the
ball and score points, they're entertaining. They put up thirty
seven on Texas last year in the Sugar Bowl, so
he knows what Texas looks like. And I just have
and you know, you got jaln milroll back. And to
your point, it was not a mass exodus in Michigan.
I'm not nearly as confident as in We'll see how

(15:04):
Sharon Moore does. And I know a lot about Alex Orgy.
He's okay. But I think it's a big drop off.
Your thoughts on Michigan and their quest to repeat is
big ten champions.

Speaker 7 (15:16):
Yeah, I agree with you.

Speaker 6 (15:17):
It's going to be a significant drop off to say
the least. I definitely don't think they repeat his Big
ten champ, National champion. You want a hot take, I'm
not even sure that they make the twelve team playoffs
this year. That's how big of a fall off I
think there is for Michigan. Let's start on offense. Only
one returning starter on that offensive side of the ball,
so you have a lot of talent to replace there.

(15:37):
Now that they still got some guys Adam and Edward's
gonna have to step up and take a majority of
the carries. But let's see if he's used to that.
He didn't get a majority of the carries last couple
of years and was banged up both here, so I
have some question marks there. Offensive line has been, you know,
the staple of Michigan football last few years. Zero returning
starters on that offensive line, So concerns there. Concerns with

(15:58):
a young coaching staff, to say the least, very inexperienced one.
Harbaugh took out just about everybody with them, including the
strength coach. Defense should be top ten caliber. They certainly
don't have the depth is what they had in the
last couple of years. But I think another reason why
I'm down on Michigan this year. Unlike last season when
they started off with the East Carolina Bowling Green UNLB,

(16:20):
they got Texas and USC early in the month of September.
So when you're trying to break in a new quarterback
and inexperienced coach, I'm not sure that it's playing Texas,
a top five team in week two is going to
be that.

Speaker 7 (16:34):
Great for Michigan.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
They also get Oregon too, Brad, which needs to my
next question. I think Oregon will run rough shot over
most of the Big Ten and would not surprise me
if they beat Ohio State with those two lockhorns handicap
that for me, Who do you think prevails in the
Big Ten? Ohio State or Oregon.

Speaker 6 (16:54):
It's tough because I think Oregon will win that matchup
when they play in the regular season in Austin. I
have Oregon favored in that game. But man, then if
they have a rematch in the Big Ten championship game,
it's gonna be awfully tough to beat Ohio State twice.
I will say this, I like Oregon's quarterback situation better
than Ohio State. I'll think Dylan Gabriel over Will Howard

(17:17):
in the day of the Weekend Man. Oregon's recruited very well.

Speaker 7 (17:20):
They've hit the portal.

Speaker 6 (17:21):
Obviously they got the Nike war Chess of Money. When
it comes to nil, they're right there.

Speaker 7 (17:26):
In the mix.

Speaker 6 (17:27):
I mean, on a neutral field, there's not much separating
these two teams. So I think it's kind of a
I've got coin toss, a coin flip, and you know,
I think you can make bad worse bets. If you
just look at the futures market Big ten and you
just been Ohio State to win it, in Oregon to
win the Big Ten. They're both at plus money. I
think you're in pretty good shape there because I don't

(17:48):
see anybody else winning the Big Ten.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
Talk about Brad Powers, Brad Power Sports are Fox Sports
Radio college football guru. So Brad, quick question for you
Texas with Steve Sarkisian. Did they pick up where they
left off last year with quinn Ewers and company?

Speaker 6 (18:07):
You know, I think I certainly my power ranks I
got number four, so I think they're going back.

Speaker 7 (18:12):
To the playoffs.

Speaker 6 (18:13):
But it's always compared to what are expectations.

Speaker 7 (18:16):
For Texas is this year?

Speaker 6 (18:18):
And what are my power ranks compared to the market
right now? And actually, even though I have them fourth
overall in the country, I think the market's a little
higher on Texas than what I have them because I
have bet Texas under their win total under ten and
a half. I bet against Texas and individual what they
call game of the year lines, you know, the biggest
games of the year. I bet Oklahoma against Texas. I
have bet Texas A and M. That rivalry is back on.

(18:41):
I bet Texas A and M is a home dog.
So I think Texas a little overpriced. I am. My
worry is obviously, you know, the playing Alabama and Georgia
and teams like that a little different than TCU and
Texas Tech. I mean just their strength of schedules got
going up a little bit.

Speaker 7 (18:57):
And I'm not a big viewers guy.

Speaker 6 (18:59):
I I still don't think he's the end all. I'm
not calling for, you know, him to be benched in
Arch manning the era of Arch to start. But I
didn't see it then. That was a game against Washington
they should have won, they didn't. And you look at
those last four throws that quinn Ewers made at the
end of that game.

Speaker 7 (19:18):
I mean, I left a.

Speaker 2 (19:19):
Lot to be desired. Brad. I'm Glad you mentioned the
twelve team playoff. I'm very much looking forward to it,
and of course, now that means plenty of you know,
a group of five schools are going to be in there.
What are some of the sleepers you're looking at that
would find their way into the twelve team tournament and
maybe even make some noise.

Speaker 6 (19:39):
Well, I don't know if they're sleepers. They're kind of
the name the brand names. And I'll start with the
one that I think has the best chance to make it,
and that's Boise State. I think it's the best Boise
State team maybe a decade deep across the board. I
like Dirk Cutters going to be their offensive corner. I
like that with a young, inexperienced coach. I like both
of their co defensive coordinators. Uh, you know, we'll see

(20:01):
if Malachi Nelson might be their quarterback boll He's a
former five star, number one overall player in the country.
How often do this Boisse State get somebody like that?
Have a former five star recruited wide receiver Ashton Gent.

Speaker 7 (20:11):
He plays like a five star.

Speaker 6 (20:12):
Probably the best groupall five player regardless of position in
the entire country. So Boisse State's probably my favorite team
in the G five this year. Memphis is another team
that I think is in the mix, Liberty, because they
returned Cadence Slider. They obviously made the Fiesta Bowl last year,
and they played the week of schedule yet again in
the country, so they're in the mix if you're looking
for a big time long shot a team that only

(20:33):
had one winning season at the FBS level.

Speaker 7 (20:36):
Texas State.

Speaker 6 (20:37):
Keeping on Texas State, Yes, I love that coach. Yeah,
DJ Kenny is his name. He's probably the best young
offensive mine in the country. He won't be at Texas
State very long. I can tell you that.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
No, that's a good call there, and it might be
a while before the markets catch up with him. They're
one hundred and one to win the national championship. Don't
need to get silly, but to your point, they will
be making headlines. Speaking of headlines, I cannot not have
this conversation without invoking the Colorado Buffaloes and Dion Sanders.
What do you expect out of them in reality this year?

Speaker 6 (21:13):
Well, I mean it's similar to last year where I
upgraded their power rating significantly, just that the market has
upgraded it more and I'm not completely buying that they're
a big twelve contender, even though they're a pretty wide
open league. I look at the schedule and I don't
see a lot of shurtfire losses. But the reality is
I don't see a lot of shirtfire wins either, And

(21:34):
I got a team that I got to question the
chemistry because it's a second year in a row. It's,
for the most part, a brand new roster outside of
Shador Standers at quarterback and a couple of other key players,
So I don't know if they're going to have time
to get that chemistry down before that they suffer a
couple of losses, and that's the case with Travis Hunter
and Shadeur. They don't have another year of eligibila. They're

(21:56):
heading in the draft, and so I just wonder how
interested they're going to be playing in the month of
November if they got three or four losses at that point.
So I am more pessimistic than the market on Colorado
five and a half to win total. Believe it or not,
I would prefer under five and a half.

Speaker 2 (22:14):
I can't see going over, but I'm not in their
hurry to bet the under. The one thing I'm watching
I'd like you to talk about their new offensive line.
The good news is they're upgraded, but they're all they're
five new starters. You know how that works, Brad. I mean,
if they don't jail, how do you do you expect
to hype around their new offensive line to manifest itself.

Speaker 6 (22:34):
Well, it can't be worse than last year. I mean,
obviously they give them more sex than anybody.

Speaker 7 (22:39):
In the country.

Speaker 6 (22:39):
Last year, some of that's not do it for holding
the ball onto the ball too long, but obviously didn't
have good offensive line play. It takes time and not
all the Yeah, they brought in a bunch of transfers,
well not all those transfers were ready to go even
in the springs. So can you develop an offensive line
in one fall camp.

Speaker 7 (22:55):
I'm not sure.

Speaker 6 (22:56):
And I'll tell you what would concern me is what
the game to look out for Nebraska Week two.

Speaker 2 (23:02):
Nebraska.

Speaker 6 (23:02):
If there's one thing they're really good at, it's upfront
on that defensive line. So if that offensive line is
not ready to go to Nebraska, win that game.

Speaker 2 (23:10):
Down here for North Dakota State. But I still expect
him to give an effort. What's interesting, Brad? Last thing
on Colorado. They'll play five games before their bye. If
they have designs on having an above five hundred record,
they better start fast because after the bye you got
Kansas State, Cincinnati at Texas Tech, Utah at Kansas, Oklahoma State.
Your thoughts on those first five games Central Florida, Baylor,

(23:33):
Colorado State, and Nebraska, and of course North Dakota State.
Do you think they can be three and two?

Speaker 7 (23:37):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (23:38):
I think so. I mean they're gonna be favored in
three of the five games, North Kota State, the Colorado State,
and Baylor. They'll be favored in those games, and you know,
I don't think the other two are unwinnable, But I
agree with you. After that first bye week, they're the
only game that they're going to be favored in is Cincinnati.
If you don't believe me, you can pretty much right
now in Vegas that every single Colorado game in the
market and they're only favored in for the twelve games,

(24:00):
and they're gonna get to even both forget the conference.
If they are going to get the balligibility, they're gonna
have to pull a couple upsets.

Speaker 2 (24:08):
You know something about this team, It makes me weary.
They're not getting any of my money, all right, can't
let you go without talking about the Heisman Trophy outs.
It feels like a two man race between Dylan Gabriel
and Carson Beck. But you know how these things go.
The reason I say that if Oregon can take the
version of bow Knicks that we saw at Auburn and
turn them into the twelfth overall pick in the draft

(24:30):
and a Heisman finalist, what can Dan Lanning do with
Dylan Gabriel. Plus, you know everybody talks about your door, Sanders,
I think Carson Beck is the first round choice. Is
it those two or is it somebody else? Who am
I missing? No?

Speaker 7 (24:44):
I mean those are the two.

Speaker 6 (24:45):
I bet both, and those are my two biggest bets
to win the Heis. And I think my favorite one
probably be Gabriel just because I got a longer odds
at fourteen to one at the time when I bet it.
So I mean, by right now, if I you know,
had to make one, bet it be Dylan Gabriel, just
because I think they'll have a coach and an offense
more likely to put up the stats. And I mean
you're going to read about it. Dylan Gabriel if he

(25:05):
stays healthy this year is going to set the all
time mark, whether it's career path, attempts, completion, passing yardage
in the history of college football. He's gonna break all
those records this year. So I think gonna be another
feather in this cap. And obviously I think Oregon's gonna
be really good. But outside of those two, you're looking to,
you know, bet a little bit of a longer shot.
You know, people in that fifteen twenty to one, maybe

(25:25):
twenty five to one range. Jackson dark quarterback, will Miss.
I think we'll miss will have a really good season
at the very least on the offense side of the ball.
I kind of if he's healthy, keep keep an eye
on Riley Leonard in Notre Dame, you know, a dual threat.
And if Notre Dame wins that first game against Texas
A and M and right now to pick him and
as far as that that individual game, Sur Dame is

(25:46):
gonna be favored in the remaining eleven games and they
if he can put up the stats there with his
legs in his arm a little bit, he's a factor.
He's a guy that I bet thirty to one to
win the Heisman.

Speaker 2 (25:56):
Riley Leonard real quickly, let's go to your hometown, a
school that's loaded with receivers and running backs. It'll be
in the NFL. I've got a NYE on Will Howard
at fifteen to one. If Ryan Dick can get him clicking,
he might put up some real numbers. And if Ohio
State can win, do you think Will Howard has a
chance to sneak in there?

Speaker 6 (26:16):
Here's my problem with betting anybody in Ohio State. There's
just so many different options. I mean, you have probably
the best one to two punch at running back in
the entire country, Henderson and Quinn Schawn Judkins. You do
still have elite wide receivers Buka and even the true
freshman five star Jeremiah Smith. I I don't see those
guys are all having big seasons. We'll split the boat

(26:38):
a little bit. I'm not a Will Howard guy to
begin with, and if you don't believe me, I'm not
sure he would have been a slam dunk to even
be the starting quarterback at Kansas State.

Speaker 2 (26:48):
This sure as possible. It's possible. Shador Sanders, I know
he pisses a lot of people off because he won't
shut up, but at forty to one. He's a sleeper
in some circles. Not for me, but your thoughts.

Speaker 6 (27:00):
Yeah, I'm not a fan. I just don't think they
see the heisens real simple too. Obviously, it's become a
quarterback award for the most part, ninety percent of the
time it's securit quarterbacks winning it. But you also have
to be on a national title contending team average wins
in the regular season. For the guys that in the
last twenty years in the Heisman eleven Colorado I just
got done seeing is going to fight for their life
to make a bowl. Shadur's not going to He's not

(27:23):
forget winning and he's not going to be anywhere near
New York with a six and six record.

Speaker 2 (27:29):
Brad as always a baffo performance, greatly appreciated. No one
is better prepared you even take trips to these schools.
Bottom line is this like to get you back on
as we get closer to midseason and things start to
take shape.

Speaker 6 (27:44):
Hey, thanks for having me as always and I look
forward to talking to me in the future.

Speaker 2 (27:47):
Thank you. Brad. That is Brad Powers Brad Power Sports.
As you can see, he is absolutely a college football guru.
Follow him at Brad Power Sports and of course follow
him at Twitter at Brad Powers seven. All Right, the
USA versus South Sudan was not the only basketball game
that'll be talked about for a while. As I mentioned

(28:09):
during the midnight hour, well, the WNBA All Star Game
had multiple storylines and did it absolutely live up to
the hike hype. Give it up to Orique ogin Biwally.
There's a backstory there. This was fun. We'll talk about
it coming up, but first we go to our guy,
the chef, Kevin Wyren with the latest.

Speaker 8 (28:30):
Yeah, the US Women's Olympic basketball team losing to the
w NBA All Stars tonight. Finals score in that game
one one seventeen to two to one oh nine. A
Rique Oganbawally scoring thirty four points, all of them in
the second half. Angel Reaese twelve points, eleven rebounds. She
had herself a double double. Caitlyn Clark with ten assists.

(28:53):
The US women's squad will play a tune up against
Germany on Tuesday. As for the man, of course, it
was a very nerve racking win for the Americans as
they beat South Sudan one to one two one hundred.
Lebron James on the layup late to secure the win.
But the Americans they were down double digit sixteen at

(29:14):
one point in the first half, and they'll have one
final exhibition matchup on Monday against Germany, and that can
be seen over on Fox. Cavaliers giving Evan Mobley a
five year max rookie extension. It's gonna be worth two
hundred and twenty four million dollars. And in Major League Baseball,
couple of extra inning affairs. Dodgers over the Red Sox

(29:36):
seven six and eleven innings. The Milwaukee Brewers beat the
Twins eighty four in twelve and don't look now.

Speaker 9 (29:43):
The Astros now.

Speaker 8 (29:44):
Ahead in the American League West by one game over
the Mariners after they take down Seattle for to the Mariners.
They're in a free fall right now. They've lost five.

Speaker 9 (29:54):
Games in a row.

Speaker 8 (29:57):
The Pirates they're on a six game winning streak as
they take down the Philadelphia Phillies for to one. Detroit
they're won four in a row seven to three victory
on Toronto Saturday, and it's been announced that Blue Jays
shortstop Boba shed He will miss multiple weeks with a
string calf. Baltimore, they're eight four winners against the Texas Rangers.

(30:18):
The Yankees lose nine to one to the Rays Orioles,
now ahead in the AL East by two games.

Speaker 9 (30:25):
Becky Burney, all.

Speaker 2 (30:27):
Right, so as you heard the chef say, rike Oga mcwally,
the star of the game, thirty four points in the
second half, breakoff performance, the beauty of what took place
Saturday night. And I'm very curious to see what the
ratings are going to be because it was Madame Tussad's

(30:47):
for basketball. You had Andy Myer's there, and Cheryl Miller
and the great ovations. I will tell you Andrew Reese
is Dennis Rodman. I got to know Dennis Robin. I'm
telling you right now, the way she fights for rebounds,
her typical double double. Caitlin Clark had tennisists. But Erique

(31:07):
Oga Malwaally, she to me, is the biggest story. Why
because what's been the real story of the NBA this
year the selection of the national team and this knucklehead
coach who just comes off like thirty yards of garlic
when someone tells her to have a nice day. She
you know, Oga mawally was. I guess you could say
a snub, but you got to remember from the team.

(31:30):
But you got to remember that she withdrew from consideration
a couple of months ago, she says, because I don't
like the political aspect of what's going on here. Count
me out, and you think they could use her. By
the way, the last time the All Star has played
the Olympic team was twenty twenty one, and the All
Stars won that game as well. But everybody watching this
contest Saturday night, we were the winners. They were all winners,

(31:54):
but the fans were the winners. You actually saw a
professional sporting event. Stars play defense, tough defense, physical defense,
even some hard files passing lanes they closed, they were
jumped for steals. Team USA even broke out a full
court press in the second quarter. And what they showed was, Hey,

(32:15):
you Olympic teams, you think you're gonna face us, this
is what you're gonna be getting. It wasn't a stupid
layup line in the NBA All Star Game. Both teams
actually ran actual offensive sense. You had screens, you had
pick and rolls, you had postuffs. They didn't take turns
trying to show off for loun strees or do something stupid.
Although Caitlin Clark said I'll launch a bomb soon before halftime.

(32:37):
That was on the mic. They caught that. Girls were
miked up, and you know, Caitlyn Clark and Injuries got
huge ovations. Britney Griner and Diana Tarassi got huge ovations.
Girls were interviewed from the bench. They were having fun.
Brenna Stewart was sensational, thirty one points and ten rebounds.

(33:00):
Asia Wilson terrific twenty two points and six rebounds. Even
Diana Trossi, you can call her forty two years of old,
forty two years old all you want. He had fourteen
points and six rebounds and five assists in her hometown
Phoenix crown ate it up. It was an outstanding event.
It was an outstanding All Star weekend, and the rookies

(33:20):
showed up and showed out. Listen, Angel Reese and Caitlin
Clark are the best thing to ever happened to the WNBA. Ever.
Remember when Bird and Magic came upon the seed in
seventy nine, the Fall of seventy nine. Did you know
in the decade of the eighties, there wasn't a single
NBA finals played that didn't include, or involve or feature

(33:41):
either Larry Bird or Magic Johnson every single finals game,
every single finals series in the eighties. Look it up.
Nineteen eighty was I'll just do this off the top
of my head. Nineteen eighty were the Lakers in Philadelphia,
Magic's famous game with the triple double. Eighty one was
Boss to Houston, eighty two were the Lakers, and I

(34:02):
believe Philly. Eighty three were the Lakers in Philly again.
Eighty four was Boston, eighty five was bought right on
down the line, and the Lakers in Boston faced each
other three times. So this boat's extremely well for the
future of the NBA. But for one night, we got
to see a real throwback. Yes, it was a genuine

(34:23):
All Star game with heated competition where both sides really
wanted to win, and people are going to be talking
about this. Speaking of something else people are talking about,
did you know Fox Sports Radio has teamed up with
tire act dot Com to give away a set of
four brand new tires valued it up to fifteen hundred
dollars every two weeks this summer. That's right, three lucky

(34:45):
listeners will receive a set of four new tires, plus

(35:08):
set of four brand new tires. To enter and get rules,
visit Fox Sports Radio dot Com furnished by tire Ac
dot Com The way tire buying should be coming up.
Just a couple thoughts on the Heisman Trophy, odds and
favorites that Brad talked about Football is upon us. We're
gonna be talking a lot about it tonight. And at

(35:29):
about seventeen minutes we got Mark Medina Medina Magic lots
to chop up. In the NBA, they're just I don't
care whether it's the Clippers, the new arena, they're moving
in the Olympics, getting ready to start, Russell Westbrook going
to the Nuggets. We're gonna get to all that coming
up as well. I'm Bernie Frattle. We are company line
from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tireck dot Com studios.

(35:52):
Keep it locked. If you're listening to the Bernie Frattle
Show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (35:57):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.

Speaker 2 (36:00):
We're back on the Bernie Fattles Show, Fox Sports Radio.
We are coming to your live from the tire Act
dot Com studios here in Las Vegas. Take up to
three am Pacific, six am Eastern. A ton of stuff
to get to tonight. We'll cover it all. NBA, We're
gonna get into the NFL. Did you know Nick Sabans

(36:22):
get in the field named after him? Of course? At
two am Pacific, five am Eastern. The Dance Sensation sweep
of the nation. What kind of brand new fool you
followed by? What my name? All right? The Heisman Trophy
watch pretty much starts minute one and every week people
can't wait to put in their two cents. And I

(36:44):
will tell you it's one of the more difficult awards
to predict because the favorite almost never wins. It never
wins it back in We'll give you some examples. Just
eight years ago, there was a young kid out of Louisville.
He was one hundred to one at the beginning of
the season. His name was Lamar Jackson. He won the
Heisman Trophy Devonte Smith two years later, a wide receiver,

(37:08):
diminutive wide receiver out of Alabama who they said he
was too small in high school to play. He was
one hundred to one. He won the Heisman Trophy. You
may remember a kid that couldn't start at LSU because
you lost the job to an incoming guy named Justin Fields.
But he's been to a Super Bowl already. He did
pretty well at LSU back in twenty nineteen. He won

(37:29):
the Heisman at forty to one. His name was Joe Burrow.
Of course, last year, Jaden Daniels was ten to one
right on down the line. Derek Hendry was twenty five
to one back in twenty fifteen. It's hard to predict,
but people are going to talk about it a lot
this year. I'm wondering kind of a little bit because

(37:49):
it's an offensive award and you've got players unless they
stumble badly. Dylan Gabriel at eight to one at Oregon.
You saw what bow Nicks did last year. He was
okay at Auburn. He was much better at Oregon. He
was the twelfth overall pick in the NFL Draft. He
was a Heisman finalist. That really kind of bodes well
for Dylan Gabriel, who did very well with Oklahoma. He

(38:11):
could be in for a monster year, and the Ducks
head coach Dan Lanning. He's a maestro when it comes
to developing talent and acquiring talent. Gabriel comes to Oregon,
He's already got fifteen thousand passing yards and one hundred
and fifty two touchdowns. This is his third school, started
at ECF and then went to Oklahoma. He's very much

(38:31):
in the short list of the conversations, as is Carson Beck,
who's a clear cut first round quarterback. He's returning Georgia,
viewed as a potential number one pick. Helped Georgia to
a thirteen to one record in his first season as
a starter. He's a very good pocket passer under his tutelage.
Last year, Georgia scored the fifth most points per game
in the country at forty one. He was also one

(38:53):
of the six quarterbacks last year to have an average
pass of eight point five more yards and a just
a completion rate of seventy minimum three hundred drop backs.
That's big time. That's big time. Quinn Ewers. Brad's right
about quinn Ewers. He's hit and miss, but it's possible
Texas could do something crazy with quinn Ewers. He's ten

(39:16):
to one. Look the Longhorne came into one play again
into the National Championship game, but that wasn't one of
his best efforts.

Speaker 6 (39:25):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (39:26):
He didn't have a lot of big time throws last
year and they've lost a lot of offensive talent. Shudor
Sanders is gonna get a lot of talk. You watch
how much they promote him. I'm not sure he's a sleeper.
They call him a sleeper, but he is forty to
one if you're feeling sausty. They were four and eight
last season. But Shardor Sanders is a legitimate quarterback. But
they're gonna have to win, all right. This isn't you know,

(39:48):
like Notre Dame in the fifties or whatever, whether you
could have a losing record in your quarterback could win
the Heisman Trophy. You're gonna have to win. But these
are the names you're gonna hear, and you'll hear some
Jalen Milroll in there. I think you hear some. Will
Howard Jackson. Dart is already getting a lot of play.
Riley Leonard, you know it's hard to win. The hes
been at Notre Dame. But if they can light it

(40:09):
up there because it is you know, you do have
to pile up statistics right, so it'll be fun to watch.
Coming up, we talk with Mark Madina, our NBA guru.
Steve Balmer had a lot to say about his clippers.
We'll talk about the Olympic team and Russell Westbrook and
much much more. So. Keep it locked. You're listening to
the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (40:32):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.

Speaker 2 (40:35):
Well, that's right, you heard the man. The Bernie Fraddle
Show keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Frattle.
We are coming to you live from the tirak dot
com studios here in Las Vegas. Fox Sports Radio tiract
dot com. We'll help you get there an unmatched selection, fast,
free shipping, free road hazard protection, and over ten thousand

(40:55):
recommended installers. Tyrat dot com the way tire buying should be. Hey,
it's mid July. Summer is raging, pant races are raging,
the NFL is near. But we're talking basketball because it
is very much in the news. It's midnight, it's Saturday night.
It's that time, Mark Medina Medina Magics. We do this

(41:18):
every Saturday night at midnight. We do it fifty two
weeks out of the ear. For a good reason. There
is always news. Mark. Let me start with a topic
that I really didn't think we talked much about tonight,
and it's the game Saturday against South Sudan. And let
me start by saying this, if someone had the audacity

(41:39):
to say that Steve Kurs should be fired, I think
he should get a raise. I'm not being funny. He's
got to manage this. This island of misfit toys who
come and go as they please, turn it off, turn
it on when they please. And if not for his
rotations today that got them back into the game of
his reserves, they might have gotten beat your thoughts.

Speaker 7 (42:00):
I don't think you should have get fired now Rays
who knows. But the bottom line is it's hard to
really criticize any coaching decisions when your roster is, you know,
arguab with the twelve best players in the world, right,
so it really falls on the players. But to your point, yes,
he emptied the bench in the second half and that

(42:21):
really fueled the run. Obviously, Lebron James made that game
winning laid up, he played out of his mind and
crunch time, same thing with Steph Curry. Those really the
bench that helped set the tone. And I think, look,
I know it's not sexy and people like hot takes here,
but South Sudan's an actually really good team. They didn't

(42:41):
come out of nowhere. Obviously, the US shouldn't have struggled
the way it did and they should have dominated. But
I think that this really opened the eyes of the
US of this that Joel Embiid isn't the right starter,
and I understand why he started. The idea is they
need length. You know, FOEVA is a physical game. South
Sudan has some bigs. Serbia has some biggs and nicoley Jokic,

(43:03):
but he hasn't just he hasn't adjusted well. And I
think that moving forward, it's likely that Anthony Davis and
bam Adebayo will be starting. And you know, when you
look at this game, that's probably problem solved. So yeah,
it's a good test. Should have been a blowout, but
I think that moving forward they won't be as vulnerable,

(43:26):
you know, and.

Speaker 2 (43:27):
I think they should just send Joel and beat home.
They don't need them. Bringing Donovan Klinging or somebody. I
don't care. I would say this though, and you are
right about South Sudan top credit to their coaching staff,
but you've got four guys who've only played in you know,
even played it in an NBA game. And it was clear
to me, Mark, I've been doing this a long time.

(43:49):
Our guys took the floor tonight and said, or this
afternoon and said, well, actually it was night in London.
It was eight thirty at night in London. The bottom
line is this. They said, now we got to light
work today, We'll just mail it in and they did,
and then when they needed to at the end, they
played desperate. They applied defensive pressure, they out athleted, they
did what they needed to do, and while the bench
got them in the game, Lebron actually became the adult

(44:11):
in the room. I there's not a dot in my mind.
They're gonna win the gold medal. Okay, I just let's
just put this to rest. Let's stop with the crazy
hot takes. This is the NBA. Now, they come and
go as they please. And today they took the night
off and give it up to a game sud An
team who's only ranked thirty third in the world's I mean,
let's not get too much credit. They're not gonna make

(44:32):
it to the metal round. Mark.

Speaker 7 (44:34):
Yeah, well, here's the thing with South and I don't
think they're going to make it to the medal round.
But again, this is a good program. You know, Louldang
former NBA player, he's overseen it. They you know, they
don't have elite NBA town, but they actually have NBA
players on the team and Carlic John's winning, Gabriel. They

(44:55):
have seven international players that are played in respective the league.
So what I'm getting at this team isn't coming out
of nowhere. They're not a laughing stock. They're respectable. But
to your point, it's USA. It's got the best team
in the world. And I think I agree with you
one hundred percent. What their vulnerabilities were A few things. One,
you know they tree as an exhibition it technically is.

(45:18):
Two Steve Kerr is looking at this as let's figure
out rotations and try to win the game. And three
they let their guard down as soon as they saw
that they could lose this game, you know, with how
poorly they're shooting from the field and how well you know,
Sue Danne was I think sixty percent in the first half.
They played to win the game in the second half,

(45:41):
so Steve Kerr, he emptied the bench. You know, Anthony
Edwards beam out of bio, Anthony Davis, Jason Tatum, Derek White.
They led the comeback and then Lebron you know, went
on a tear. You know, twenty three point six rebound,
six assists, instant game winning layup, Steph Curry hit a three,
Drew Holiday made some good defensive stop. So yeah, it

(46:02):
was classic almost Golden State Warriors during their dynasty years
where they're down at halftime. They flipped the switch and
then they showed how good they really.

Speaker 2 (46:11):
Are well and they were one to twelve from behind
the arc. They turned the ball over a ton. Yeah,
I'll make a quick prediction. We'll get off this. Steve
Kerr is a good dude. I really believe that his
offense has been mainly based on the off ball movement
of staff. I think they're going to simplify the offense,
go out and play tenacious defense from here on out.
You'll see you'll see what the US they can do.

(46:31):
That's just my quick prediction. Do you disagree with any
of that.

Speaker 7 (46:34):
No, I think they're being calling cards defense and as
far as offense goes, yeah, they want to move the ball.
You know, they have a lot of talent obviously, so
that they want to be multi faster and there's no
need to have everyone, you know, go ice so heavy
when they have so much depth. But to your point,
I know it'd being a little fasicious. The reason why
you know, joelbe is not going to be sent home.

(46:56):
But like the practical part is that even through a
struggle in the Foba game, he need length and so
they need as many bigs as possible. He needs to
play better. But you know, even if he is the
third center, there's still going to be value in that
in the sense of if Bam and ad get the
foul trouble or they just need depth and they're gonna

(47:18):
need them. There's a reason why after they fell short
in the World Cup last year they lacked length, they
you know, recruited Joe Embi to say, hey, don't play
for a native Cameroon, don't play for France or have
dual siiens to play with us. They wouldn't have done that.
Four press that they weren't aware that they need bigs.

Speaker 2 (47:37):
Well, that's all fair, and you know, to set the
record straight, last September they lost to Canada in overtime,
so it's not like they need a complete overhaul. And
of course I'm joking about the embiid thing. You know, Mark,
I can't do this segment without at least with at
least three smart ass comments there. But I do mean
what I say, right, You do twenty hits a week
on this network and they all start to sound the same.

(47:59):
I don't want to sound the same. Mark. By the way,
we're talking to Mark Medina Medina Magic every Saturday night
at midnight on The Bernie Frattle Show. I'm glad you
wrote about Steve Bomber and his take on the Clippers
as he moved into their new arena next year. I
like Steve Bomber a lot. I actually genuinely root for

(48:19):
the Clippers one time with the sports Gods. But when
he tells you that most people would be salivating to
have Kawhi and James next year, yeah, maybe Kawhi the
version back in Toronto back in twenty nineteen. Did he
when it comes to Harden, did he mean salivating or
throwing up in his mouth? Because you're winning.

Speaker 1 (48:37):
Nothing with that guy.

Speaker 7 (48:39):
Yeah, I think that that same will be more accurate,
you know, five seven years ago. But you know, I
think in reality, with the Clippers, they had no other choice.
I mean, they don't want to be irrelevant do a
tear down, especially when they're you know, gonna start next
season into it Delba And this is like the best
arena I've ever been and it has all the bells

(49:01):
and whistles, you know, this huge video board grabbing go food.
They're building a lot of amenities to make sure there's
a good fan atmosphere, but those are all bells and whistles.
They need to have a good product on the floor,
and so you know, he's trying to sell something and
there is a realistic pathway not for them to win
a championship, but hey, they at least make the playoffs,

(49:23):
and especially because of them having the arena, they want
to have a team that can at least make the
playoffs and they're not just starting over from scratch and
so look, they're not championship contenders. It was disappointing that
they lost Paul George, but they really had no other choice.
I mean, they're not going to outbid the Sixers for
a player that has been unreliable from a health standpoint.

(49:46):
Even though he's a great two way player, he's inconsistent
in that respect. And they did the best that they
could given the circumstances with getting you know, guys like
Derek Jones and Nicholas Patoom. You know, they have Terrence
Man who'll have a bigger role next season. They got
Chris Dunn, who's a better defender and a better playmaker

(50:08):
than Russell Westbrook. But you know, this is all good
to make the playoffs and be a first round threat,
and that's it.

Speaker 2 (50:17):
So yeah, yeah, speaking of a good product on the floor,
I think very well deserving. Evan Mobley gets a five year,
two hundred and twenty four million dollar maximum rookie contract extension.
This is a guy who's a seven footer and elite defender.
I trade him for an Embeid right now to take you.
You can't tell me he couldn't help this Olympic team.
He was I think third and defensive player of the

(50:37):
year their last year of the year before speak to that.
The Cleveland Cavaliers lock him up. That's a team with
a good product on the floor.

Speaker 7 (50:46):
Yeah, well, look, he'll be in the Olympics in twenty
twenty eight. I mean that's not official, but that's my prediction.

Speaker 2 (50:52):
Sure.

Speaker 7 (50:53):
His rookie season, the Cavaliers were talking about this is
they reminded him of Anthony and Davis, but with better health.
And now Anthony Davis has improved in that. But the
idea of a great two way big that is a
room protector, is a dual threat offensively in the post,
and you know, as a facilitator. So these are all

(51:15):
good signs. I mean they you know, made a lot
of off season moves already with you know Canning, JB.
Bicker Staff, and we can debate all you want on
does he really deserve the blame. You know a lot
of it had to do with injuries, but this is
the NBA. The coach is the always the first one
to get let go and they feel like they didn't

(51:37):
reach their potential. So the fact that they signed Evan
Mobile to a MAX extension is a really good sign
because he needs him and Donovan Mitchell to carry the
day and you know Donovan Mitchell is going to agree
with that extension as well.

Speaker 2 (51:53):
The fun thing about this segment we covered all speaking
of signing. So, and you mentioned Chris Dunn going to
the Ards, which I think is an excellent acquisition. He's
part of his sign and trade deal. Well, Russell Westbrook
also a part of his sign and trade deal. Is
that official? Russell Westbrook heading to the Denver Nuggets? And
what the hell of the Nuggets thinking?

Speaker 7 (52:13):
Yeah? Well, twice already the Utah Jazz said fair farewell
to Russell Westbrook without even him ever playing in a
game or wearing.

Speaker 2 (52:23):
A Jazz uniform.

Speaker 7 (52:24):
Maybe it's good enough for a video tribute. We'll see.
What are the Nuggets thinking? Come on, they put video
tributes for everyone these I know, I was.

Speaker 2 (52:35):
Thinking, you sound like me. No, maybe they could hang
his jersey and the rafters too.

Speaker 7 (52:38):
Go ahead, Hey, I think you know what. I think
that's up for discussion. What are the Nuggets thinking? It
sounds like you don't like this move? I think that.

Speaker 2 (52:47):
No, he's basically replaced KCP. Right, Am I wrong? Or right?

Speaker 6 (52:52):
Right?

Speaker 2 (52:53):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (52:53):
I mean, look, the ideal is that the Nuggets kept KCP.
They kept Bruce Brown laugh season. But the new CBA
doesn't allow teams to be overspending, even if they have
a team owner. That's willing to absorb the luxury attack.
So am I enamor with the move. No, do I
think it's a good move. Yes, because of the practicality here.

(53:17):
They need some roster depth to relieve some fresher off
Jamal Murray, Nikole Jokic, Michael Porter Junior. I think they
have a good coach, Michael Malone. All those elements in
play will leave me to believe that they don't have
more success with Russell Westbrook the same way they did
with the Clippers than they did than Russell Westbrook had

(53:38):
with the Lakers. But I will say this, remember how
Russell Westbrook's time with the Clippers ended. He didn't play
a lot of the playoffs. He didn't show a lot
of his value in the playoffs. So even all this,
through all this rhetoric about yeah, the Clippers really valued him,
and you know, he felt more at home there than
the Lakers action spoke out in the word. So I

(54:01):
think in the short term it's good, especially for the
regular season. They can release some of the pressure. But
you know, I think the ultimate test is going to
be will Russell Westbrook finally accept this is where he's
at in his career? And I don't think the Nuggets
are going to bat an eye and treat him the
same way the Clippers did. So again, I got your skepticism,

(54:24):
I share, but they really had no other alternatives.

Speaker 2 (54:27):
Mark, you laid that out perfectly, and this is why
I enjoined the segment so much. You hit right to
the apex of the issue. What does Denver get? Well,
the average about four points a game in twenty minutes
last year per game. He did play some good individual
defense at times when he decided he wanted to. But
here's the sixty four dollars question, and we all know
it's against a lot of practice psychology without a license.

(54:50):
How's Westbrook going to feel coming off the bench? And
how long is it before you know he becomes the
turd in the punch bowl.

Speaker 7 (54:57):
Well, he's come off the bench and it's gotten used
to him. So he'll embrace it. He'll say all the
right things. He'll be a regular season contributor. I think
that what you're going to see is he has the
excited energy to do whatever it takes just to get
the foot in the door. And then one stat wears off. Yes,

(55:17):
all these questions that we have, it'll reach its full bloom.
But I think that because the Nuggets are, you know,
two seasons removed from championship. Michael Malone's one of the
best coaches in the NBA, as well as what Tyler
was with the Clippers. Any frustrated feelings that he has,
honestly doesn't matter. So you know, his role is going

(55:39):
to be what's best for the team. And again, it's
not like their sign amax contract or sign the must
a year deal, So it is what it is. I
don't think that he's going to be someone who's going
to carry them in the playoffs. But you know, even
if he's a regular season contributor, that's good because that
can help the win total, help the playoff seeding, as

(56:01):
well as relief pressure off their main championship corps guys.

Speaker 2 (56:06):
Well, and I'll be honest, and I really mean this sincerely,
is somehow Westbrook lasts this season and Denver wins a
ring and Russell Westbrook gets a ring. I'll be happy
for the guy because no one could deny he's a
world class athlete. No one could deny he plays hard.
But going back to his days at UCLA, it's always

(56:26):
left a lot to be desired and he has no
winning attached to his name. So if he wraps things
up in Denver with a ring this year, I would
be happy for the guy.

Speaker 7 (56:34):
Yeah. Well, look, I mean I'm not wording four or
more against him, Like I'm just calling ol s it
and doing my job. I think if he doesn't do
himself any to service with how you know, he makes
things unreasonably hard. You know, he competes hard, and that's great,
but he doesn't always compete smart. And he has adjusted

(56:56):
to his role. But then you know, as time goes
on on, I think the feelings of his value as
a former All Star and you know, triple double machine
and all that comes into effect, and he's just he's
not the same player he was today. The modern NBA
has exposed him because he's not a good shooter, he's
not a great defender, and so he has shown an

(57:19):
ability to adapt to his role. He hasn't always shown
a willingness to accept that role at least long term.
Short terms, he can do it, but it requires the
right team around him to shield his weaknesses and long term,
eventually the frustrations always get the best of them.

Speaker 2 (57:38):
Yeah, fair enough, And just to maintain my journalistic integrity,
and I actually have a sheep skin as a journalist. Look,
I'm not rooting for him to succeed or fail, but
if the story has written and it ends that way,
you would be happy for it. Finally, can't finish this
segment without the referencing Bronnie James. And I've covered enough

(57:58):
summer leagues to know that because he didn't play today,
that's just standard operating procedures. So what nothing to see here.
But what I really want to know is behind closed doors,
Let's say his name wasn't Bronnie James. Let's see it
was Eddie Gazinski. He's six foot two and he's built
like a point guard. But he can't bring the ball
up the floor. He doesn't have the ball handling ability.
He's not going to be a playmaker, distributor or a facilitator.

(58:22):
The Lakers have shown us that that's where he is
right now. He's not going to have to be a
shooting guard. He'll spend the season in South Bay and
hopefully he gets on the floor with Lebron at least once,
so we can achieve that dream. But forget his name's Bronnie.
From the aspect of him as a prospect, his physical ability,
his resume, his makeup. What's really the Lakers plans for

(58:43):
him in terms of trying to develop a guy that
might help him win basketball games.

Speaker 7 (58:49):
Yeah, I mean he's going to help the South Bale
Lakers win basketball games. I mean most of his time
is going to be in the G League. To your point,
if his name wasn't Brownie James, I think, you know,
in fairness, spade of fade, he wouldn't have gotten drafted
by the Lakers. He would have been signed with some
team as an undirected free agency, so he still would
have played Summer League, and so I think it cuts

(59:10):
both ways. He would have gotten drafted, he wouldn't have
that guarantee contract, but there still would have been a
pathway that, Hey, he has enough to get a flyer
in Summer League and a training camp invite and play
in the G League and so with that there is
a pathway for him to have a long NBA career
as a role player. The positive attributes that he has

(59:32):
great attitude, very resilient, professional team player, has good work habits, coachable,
you know, to your point, he doesn't have a defined
skill set. He's not a great shooter as we saw.
You know, his ball handling is okay, his defense is okay.
But I think you know, JJ Reddick is correct when

(59:55):
he's saying that, you know, Brownie can really lean on
becoming a good defender and being the intangibles guy. I
think it's a bit much to say, Hey, b lou
Dort be Drew Holliday. Those players are elite. But I
do understand the idea of lou Dort that he wasn't
drafted and all that. But I'm under no illusion that

(01:00:17):
Brownie is going to eventually become an all NBA defender.
But I think it is very realistic and it's likely
that he's going to cement himself having an NBA career
as a role player. But in the short term, how
that happens is he plays a lot of his time
in the G League and he's been willing to do that.

(01:00:38):
And really so what we've seen is that the leverage
play was really about gaining a guarantee contract, and you know,
the Lakers can get some criticism for that if you want,
but the reality is she was a fifty to fifth
pick and it could have gone somewhere else. So it's
you know, really, the only casualty is they didn't have
a roster space to sign a veteran m guy. But really,

(01:01:01):
what impact is that actually going to make?

Speaker 2 (01:01:05):
Mark? Great? Stuff? As always? I know you're a basketball historian.
I was on the phone two days ago with a
good buddy of mine from Detroit. We both covered the
two thousand and four Pistons who beat the Lakers in five.
I'm sure you remember that series. And my friend said this,
I won't mention his name, but he's been around a
long time. He goes, we think Briannie could be the

(01:01:26):
next brook Steppee. Maybe he can be if he reaches
his ceiling, he could be brook Steppie. You know who
brook Steppy was?

Speaker 10 (01:01:31):
Right?

Speaker 7 (01:01:32):
Uh, hey, I can google him. You have to go
to the basketball historian nugget here.

Speaker 2 (01:01:38):
Do well, I'll tell you why. Just go ahead and
google him because brooks Steppee did play in the NBA
and we saw him and he was limited. He was limited,
let's just put it that way. But he did play
in the NBA all the time. He was six foot five.
My friend was being a smart alec, but you know

(01:01:59):
that's the kind of production. Oh look, let's just leave
it there. I said that withhold final judgment for one year.
Although I do have opinions, let's let this play out.
The one thing I will say about Bronnie James, even
after going over for fifteen and all of his failures
and look like he's in over his head, his body language,
his countenance, his facial demeanor, his interaction with his teammates.

(01:02:20):
He was very measured. He was very respectable. He impressed
me with his demeanor, and I mean that. So let's
see what happens, and we'll see what happens in the
coming week. Mark as we see this every time next Saturday,
who knows what the storylines are going to be. They
continue to outdo themselves.

Speaker 7 (01:02:35):
Without a doubt and look like at all seriousness. Sarah,
I know we have a lot of fun, but we
also have a lot of good intel. You know, an
executive before the draft was insistent that, hey, he doesn't
know what Bronnie James's ceiling is, but those intangibles that
you mentioned it mattered to that executive. I mean, it's
an opposing team, but his objective analysis. Those are things

(01:02:57):
that go a long way when teams are evaluating. Okay,
is this person worth having at the end of the
bench rotation because a lot of it is Okay, well
he complain about playing time. No, Will he be a
good teammate?

Speaker 2 (01:03:10):
Yes?

Speaker 7 (01:03:11):
Can he mesh well with other teammates? Great? Now, the
important thing that he'll have to develop is a defined
skill because when you look at every role player, that's
what they're usually measured by. Okay, we have a positional needs?
What role player can we have?

Speaker 2 (01:03:26):
That's it? Mark? You neildy, I played marin League baseball.
Even in baseball, what's the one two you have? That
scout's low. He doesn't have that, But.

Speaker 5 (01:03:34):
Mark great stuff as always.

Speaker 2 (01:03:36):
Already looking forward to next Saturday night, another wild edition
of Medina Magic and joy the rest of your weekend.

Speaker 7 (01:03:41):
Mark, I appreciate you right back, got you, Mark.

Speaker 2 (01:03:45):
Medina, Medina Magic Plenty. It's he's really got a finger
on the pulse and hear him all around the network
and it's great because as every day in the music
he twenty four to seven music news cycle, Why did
I say music news in the NBA continues to go
round and around. Mark has always got his finger on
the pulse. Coming up a couple questions they're going to

(01:04:09):
demolish the Tropicana here in about three or four months.
But are the Oakland A's still coming? Well, there was
a stadium authority meeting Thursday. I'll just give you some
quick tibits coming up as to what they talked about.
What potential holdups are Bernie Fridder were coming to life
from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio, Tiret dot Com studios.
Keep it locked, the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio.

(01:04:31):
All right, the Bernie Fraddle Show keeps rolling right along.
We got so much to get to tonight. A famous
coach gave me a field named after him. This new
awesome NBA media deal has a hit a potential snag.
I promised that would lay out why I believe Kaitlin
Debor will have success at Alabama year one. We've got
some leading NFL story lamps to get to, as well

(01:04:52):
as brand new fool and what my name but coming up.
But you got to get to the Oakland A's quickly.
The update Are they coming to Vegas or not? What's
the latest. But first to go back to our guy,
Kevin Wyre at the chef with the latest.

Speaker 8 (01:05:04):
Yeah, it was a nervous, nervous moment. For the US
men's Olympic basketball team going down this stretch, but Lebron
James making a late layup to get the Americans bass
South Sudan one oh one to one hundred in a
game in which the US trailed by double digit sixteen
points at one point in the first half. They have

(01:05:26):
one more Olympic tune up coming up. It'll be Monday
against Germany and can be seen over on Fox. As
for the women's Olympic basketball team, they fell to the
WNBA All Star Team to Night one seventeen one nine.
Arique Ogain Bowally was an the game's MVP. Had thirty
four points, all of which came in the second half.

(01:05:48):
Angel Rees a double double, twelve points, eleven rebounds, Caitlyn
Clark had ten assists. Major League Baseball Dodgers extra inning
winners against the Red Sox eleven inning, seven to six.
And I get some good news as they'll have a
couple of pitchers coming back from the injured list. Tyler
Glass now going to get the start on Wednesday. Clayton
Kershaw going to make his season debut on Thursday. The

(01:06:11):
Milwaukee Brewers twelve winners in twelve innings against the Minnesota
Twins eight four the final. The Astros ahead of the
AL West now by one game after they beat the
Mariners four to two. Seattle now has lost five straight games,
so from the opposite Trent so far for the Pirates,
they've made it six straight wins. They beat the Philadelphia

(01:06:32):
Phillies for one. The Tigers have won four in a row,
including a seven to three victory at the Toronto Blue Jays,
and Baltimore wins eight to four at Texas, the Yankees
falling to Tampa Bay nine to one. So the Baltimore's
lead in the AL East is right now at two games.

Speaker 2 (01:06:49):
Spect to Bernie, all right, Jeff, good stuff or I'm up.
Those vocal cards were about an hour away, all right.
So the stadium site where the Oakland A these have
ear mark is the old Tropicana. A legendary movie member
Moe Green was out at the Tropicana, and so we're
talking about an iconic property. It looks like a shell

(01:07:10):
right now, and they're scheduled to take it down completely
in October. Why well, that's where they're going to build
the new A stadium. But there was a long Figas
Stadium Authority meeting Thursday, and they left some clues as
to how much they are advancing the ball down the road,
as it were. But still there are unanswered questions. Okay,

(01:07:33):
there are pressing questions that really are really revolve around
three basic primary funding sources. The first part of the
public financing. The a's are going to tap into three
hundred and eighty million dollars of previously approved taxpayer funding,
which I will tell you have a lot of local
folks up in arms are not happy about it. But

(01:07:53):
they say they plan to leave about thirty million of
that in reserves to help with finishing the project. What
that means I don't know. The other two, I believe
have more questions. There's a debt financing issue to this.
The OCLAD a's apparently intend to borrow three hundred million
dollars for the project. But yet still and I've asked
about this. We've had Alan stew On on many times, we

(01:08:14):
had Larry Beial, former ESPN anchor. No one seems to
know who the former lender is going to the formal
lender is going to be. There are no formal lender
commitments so far. The quote that we keep getting is
quote we've had strong interests from a number of companies
that want to participate, and that portion of the project
that's about three hundred million dollars. Okay, you know the

(01:08:35):
old saying, stop telling me about the labor paints, show
me the baby. And then of course there's the equity
financing the remaining eight hundred and fifty million dollars. That
adds up to the one point five billion that this
thing is going to need to get to get paid for.
That I believe is supposed to be funded by the
a's current owner, John Fisher and his family and his

(01:08:56):
business partners. They claim that there's ann going effort, have
no reason to doubt that, involving a sports finance company
with a lot of experience called Gallea Toto Sports Partners
to potentially bringing new team investors to help fund the project.
But that process too is also ongoing. So how are

(01:09:18):
you going to really pay for this thing? Right now?
The demolition efforts have really begun already. If you drive
by the corner of Tropicana in Las Vegas Boulevard, Honest
to god, it just looks like a skeleton right now,
is what it looks like. They are planning to engage
in an implosion of the primary hotel tower at some

(01:09:40):
point in October. That's all that's left. And what that's
going to leave is when it's all cleared out as
a nine acre site for the A's ballpark. That will be,
I believe, the smallest footprint of any Major League Baseball facility.
And should the stadium ultimately be built there or not
be built there as actually some people but are still

(01:10:00):
hoping for. I guess they've put another casino there by
the way. On Thursday, Major League Baseball released their twenty
twenty five regular season schedule, and the Sacramento will be
the home to the A's for the next three years.
Cut our health park. It's an outdoor facility and they're
going to have artificial turf. It's easier to maintain, but

(01:10:23):
that is going to magnify The heat gets very hot
in Sacramento, and so look, there are a lot of
moving parts. The gentleman I have on Alan Snell has
pretty much always said he believes it's like ninety eight
percent the A's are coming. But what I asked him
Friday night, he says, seventy five percent. Let's just wait
and watch and see what happens. But these are fair questions.

(01:10:43):
These are unanswered questions, and inquiring minds really want to know,
how are you going to pay for this thing? We
keep hearing that the financing is on the way and
they're arranging it. But you know what was the movie
Show Me the Money. Let's just see what happens. Coming up,
a legendary coach who spent time at Michigan State won

(01:11:04):
a national championship at LSU, and you know about his
exploits in Alabama. Well he's got a neat little event
coming up that will commemorate his name. I'm Bernie Fraddle.
We're Company Lion from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio
Tiret dot Com studios. Keep it locked right here if
you're listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Aw right back in the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio,

(01:11:27):
we are Company live from New Tarac dot Com studios
here in Las Vegas. Coming up top of the hour,
I'm going to share with you why I believe Caitlin
de boor, first year coach at Alabama, will have success.
I'll lay it out for you. Speaking of Alabama, as
you well know, Nick Saban won six national championships in

(01:11:47):
seventeen seasons at Alabama. Bama's football program is now expected
to honor Saban, but were renaming the playing field at
Brian Denny Stadium after the legendary former head coach. They
will name the playing surface. It's expected to be renamed

(01:12:08):
well Nick Saban Field. Time flies. The future always has
a way of arriving ahead of schedule. I'd never thought
Nick Saban will retire this soon. Thought he'd play a
few more years, hang out a few more years. We
know why he did. Seventy two years old now. In
his seventeen seasons at Bama won two undred six games, Wow,
only lost twenty nine, six national championships nine SEC titles.

(01:12:32):
By the way, Sabin also won one at LSU. So
his seven national titles are the most of all time,
more than fellow Alabama legend Paul bear Bryant. So the
state legislature in nineteen seventy five, which renamed the stadium
to honor Bear Bryant, who'd actually won two and earned
thirty two games and six national titles in twenty five
years with Bama. Bryant Denny Stadium Well, now the playing

(01:12:54):
service will be named Nick Saban Field to be a
ceremony to dedicate the new field on September seventh, and
when the Crimson Tie take on South Florida in their
second game of the season at Bryant Denny Stadium, that's
the day it'll happen, and I will I think it'll be.

(01:13:15):
I think it'll be quite a glorious event. Honestly, these
things don't just happen for no reason. You know, Schools
give out honorary degrees, schools get you know, they have
recognition committees and the board of trustees have to approve
these things, so it's no small deal. And they'll dedicate
it on September seventh. Like I said, now, the Alabama A. D.

(01:13:40):
Greg Burn has spoken for years about some sort of
plans to honor Saban, But I think his retirement actually
took a lot of people by surprise, and how it
went down so quickly after losing in the last second
against Michigan on that failed you know, that'll be the
final play in Nick Saban's career. Ill faded Jalen Milroe

(01:14:02):
try to run between the tackles against Michigan, but look,
never going to end the way you wanted to like
I said, he won two hundred and six games. And
this is a stadium that's fairly well legendary. I've been there.
It's been around since nineteen twenty nine, and it was
first named Denny Stadium in honor of an Alabama president,

(01:14:23):
George Denny, and then in the nineteen seventies they renamed
it to Bryant Denny Stadium because they wanted to include
Bear Bryant. So when coach Kalin de Boor took over
for Saban and decided he'll coach the Crimson Tide in
twenty twenty four, and Bama, by the way, opens their
current season August thirty first against Western Kentucky. The game's

(01:14:43):
going to be on ESPN, but I do think that
it will be the following week, September seventh, when this
is decided and Nick Saban will get his props and
then f will be named after Nick Saban. So what's it?
Thing is people can't And by the way, just so
you know, Saban has been around a while, all right.

(01:15:06):
I remember him at Michigan State. He never felt he
was fulfilled there. I thought he did a pretty darn
good job at Michigan State. Go I'm to ten and
one couldn't get the players he wanted to end up
leaving for LSU. They bought them away, and then he
left the college game for the Dolphins. And after two
years and here it comes. People just will never let
him off the hook for this because it happened clear

(01:15:26):
back in Christmas in two thousand and six. After saying
he would not be the Alabama coach, he once said, quote,
I'm not going to be the Alabama coach. Now He's
going to get his name on the Alabama field. And
obviously he accomplished more there with one Alabama team than
any college coach has ever done. And I think the
fact that he retired was a bit surprising because the

(01:15:49):
new revenue demands at college football, well they kind of
require holding back. Things can be sold to high that's bidder,
and Nick Saban wasn't really for that. I just think
deep down he had a cocker with his wife and
said this version of college football is really not for us. Now.
I want to stick up for Saban really quickly because
most folks, people who listened to these sports talk shows

(01:16:11):
around the network. At Fox, we have a lot of
talent that spans the glow for decades, and probably there
were folks on this network that covered that, you know,
covered that press conference as it were. Here's what happened,
all right, Nick Saban was close to turning the Dolphins around.

(01:16:31):
He'd gone like eight, and he'd gone like nine and seven,
and then he fell back and had a bad year.
And he went to the owner of the Dolphins, Wayne Heysange,
and said, I want Drew Brees. He firmly believed he
was getting Drew Brees. The Chargers were not going to
resign him. Freeze had that shoulder injury and they didn't

(01:16:55):
want to take a chance. But Saban believed with the
pieces he had place in Miami, they were a quarterback away,
get me my quarterback, and we're going to get this
team into the playoffs and into the Promised Land. And
so Breeze when Sabin had that ill fraated well it
was more than once. But when he had the ill
fated press conferences, I'm not going to be Alabama's coach.

(01:17:19):
Two days later, Breeze was flying in for a physical. Well. Unfortunately,
and there's no way Saban could have known this at
the time. It's kind of hard to predict the future.
Breeze did not pass that physical with the Dolphins, and
I think that I think Sabin took it very hard,
and I the word has it from good sources. I

(01:17:41):
have that I'm on too. Around Christmas Day in two
thousand and six, Nick Saban and his family, his wife
met with Steve Wayne Heisanger, the owner of the Dolphins,
and his wife at their house and he was very
candid and very cordially. He says, listen, I'm banking my future.
I'm getting his quarterback. If I can't have this quarterback,

(01:18:03):
I don't believe we could win here. I don't believe
I should be here. And because he was so forthright
and so honest and up front, Wayne Heyseenger accepted it.
They parted on very good terms. I don't know that
the media ever covered it as succinctly as they should
have with that level of detail. Two days later, Saban

(01:18:23):
announced he was on his way to Alabama, and of
course he took undue heat for it. He still takes
undue heat for it. Somebody will pull up that sound
bite whenever they find it convenient, and the truth of
the matter is, there was a lot more of the
story and if he'd got his quarterback. I don't think
he would have gone to Alabama, and at that point
he thought he was getting his quarterback. As you recall,
two days later, at the press conference when this was announced,

(01:18:47):
saban was not there. Wayne Heyseenger handled the press conference.
He handled it in a very dignified fashion, and everybody
sort of saved face. And Miami went about their business.
The Dolphins and Nick saban In and the Alabama Crimson
Tide went about their business. And now Nick saban Field
will be commemorated on August seventh. So what's next for Alabama. Well,

(01:19:08):
they got a dude by the name of Kayln Borr
Kylen de Boor who's taken over. You last saw Caylen
de Boer in the National Championship Game coaching the Washington Huskies.
They got beat by Michigan. He turned that program around overnight.
As a matter of fact, in his two years of Washington,
the Huskies were twenty five and three. What does Calen

(01:19:29):
de Boor and his staff do that's been so universally
successful as a football formula. I'm gonna share it with you,
and I believe Calen de Boor is going to have
success at Alabama this season, and the season is right
around the corner. August thirty. First, keep it locked. You're
listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (01:19:55):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.

Speaker 5 (01:19:58):
Yep, that's right.

Speaker 2 (01:20:00):
The band Bernie Fraddle Show keeps rolling right along. My
name is Bernie Frattle. We are coming to you live
from the tyrac dot com studios here in Las Vegas.
Foxsports Radio. Tyrack dot com. We'll help you get there
an unmatched selection, fast free shipping, free roadazard protection, and
over ten thousand recommended installers. Tyrack dot com the way

(01:20:23):
tire buying should be well. Goodbye Nick Saban, although he'll
get the field named after him. September seventh, Hello, Kaylin
de Boor and Alabama has had their share of ups
and downs in the past. Just check your history. Long
after Bear Bryant left, they were still futzing around with

(01:20:45):
coaches like Mike Shula and it was not good. But
I believe that Kalin de Boor, While I make no
predictions about how many national championships he wins, if he
wins any, Alabama's going to be successful this year. Will
he have success? Will Kale Debor have success. Yes, here's why.

(01:21:06):
Let's start with the fact that Debor is won everywhere
he's been. He's a lifetime winner. His record as a
head coach in his career is one oh four and twelve.
That's one hundred and four wins and twelve losses. That's
an eight ninety seven winning percentage. Now, to give that
some perspective, Nick Saban's winning percentage as a college head

(01:21:27):
coach is eight oho two. Well Saban does have seven
national titles. Welldbor actually has three national titles. I'll explain,
and he's played for two more. Okay, I get it.
He's split in hairs right. Four of those title game
appearances were at the NEI level at the University of
Sioux Falls. But that's a level that often reveels true coaching.

(01:21:49):
Where the talent is there's parody. There's a lot you know,
a lot of the talents the same, and so it
comes down to your ability to get the most out
of your players and how clever and creative of a
scheme can you run. That is what typically you know,
sets apart the men from the boys. So the fifth

(01:22:11):
National Championship was last January when Kaitlin de Boor and
his Washington Huskies. They were fourteen to zero and just
had polished off Texas and they beat Oregon twice, but
he ended up getting beaten by Michigan for the College
Football Championship. But when the Boar was at Sioux Falls

(01:22:31):
for a lot of his career, he was sixty seven
and three. Now you may say, well, what whooped the
damn do? That's the NAIA. No, it matters. That doesn't
happen by accident. Think about all the NIA coaches that
have come and gone and multiple schools around the country,
and they play fairly competitive football at that level, Yes

(01:22:54):
they do. Hords and hordes of coaches have had the
same opportunity to win sixty seven out of seventy games,
but only one did it. Kalin de Boor sixty seven
and three to two Falls. Then he went to Fresno
State where he was twelve and six, and then Washington
he was twenty five and three, and he took over
a Washington team that, trust me, they were really in

(01:23:17):
the doldrums and I concerned that they're going to fall
back again this year. So what is what does Calen
de Boor in his staff do that seems to translate
so well, no matter where he goes, what is exactly
his football formula that allows him to have success and
pretty much universally well, First of all, his offenses moved

(01:23:38):
the ball. These score points, they're they're very entertaining, they're
very efficient. You saw Washington hanging thirty seven points and
I think like five hundred and fifty yards on Texas
and the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. So Greg Byrne,
the athletic director who saw the Longhorns hold the same
Alabama team this last year to twenty four points in

(01:23:58):
three hundred and sixty two yards. Greg Byrne, the Alabama
athletic director, saw Calen de Boor and his Washington team
scored thirty seven points in five hundred and thirty two yards.
The beauty of it is, as much as Alabama's been
a great defensive team over the years, they've always been,
they're now an offensive team as well. I mean, you know,

(01:24:22):
Bryce Young won a Heisman Trophy. You had you had
the receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles win the Heisman Trophy.
I talked about him in my opening segment. So this
is an offense at Alabama that the bor should have
no problem recruiting to I know, I'll have to, you know,

(01:24:43):
get some staffers, which I believe he already has that
understand the SEC landscape a little bit more than him.
But the thing about it is when you're a coach
and you have a certain culture, that culture typically travels,
when you run a certain scheme, that's scheme typically travels.
And I think Debor is smart enough to cultivate relationships,

(01:25:08):
acquire the regional knowledge he's going to have to have,
and what will happen is that fierce competitiveness he already
brings to the table, and not just on the field,
but off the field when it comes to recruiting. And there, no,
it's probably no more competitive than in the South. Those

(01:25:28):
schools go at each other tooth and nail to recruit.
If Debor captures that learning curve, which I believe you will,
I think Alabama is going to have success. I think
they're going to have success this year. Now you know
where is it written you have to be an SEC
lifer to have success in the SEC. I firmly believe that.

(01:25:52):
You know that the legend, the late great Mike Leach
was not very much on his way to having success
at Mississippi. Look, it's never easy to go to a
new school, but he's gonna get athletes. He brings a
track record with him, and I believe he really understands

(01:26:15):
what it truly takes to win football games, no matter
what part of the country you're in. And I think
a lot of people genuinely regard Calen de Borr as
one of these geniuses that's on the rise. Let's go back,
what twenty years there was a guy named urban Meyer.
He had Ohio roots, all right, cut his teeth at

(01:26:38):
Bowling Green, cut his teeth at Utah. Then he ends
up at Florida and he reloads urban Meyer. A Midwestern
guy from Ohio relocates to Florida and wins two national titles.
All right, Brian Kelly, He's not a Southern guy, but
he brought a fake Southern accent. I mean, he went

(01:26:58):
from Grand Valley State to Central Michigan, to Cincinnati to
Notre Dame. What does he do? He brings a fake
Louisiana accent. What does he do, Brian Kelly? He wins
the SEC West his first season at Baton Rouge. So
let's also give Greg Byrn the Alabama ad a lot

(01:27:18):
of credit, all right. He hired Burn hired Calen de Boor.
He knows the Pacific Northwest can translate to the Deep South.
Why well, where's Greg Burn from? He's from Oregon. He
went to the high school in Oregon. His first eight
years in athletic administration were spent at Oregon in Oregon

(01:27:39):
State before moving down to the SEC where he worked
at Kentucky, the Mississippi State, and now finally Alabama. So
the truth of the matter is Alabama is a sought
after job and a lot of people would love to
have it. And I will tell you, you know, there
are a couple people would have turned it down. But
for the most part, you go through your rolodex and

(01:28:01):
you're going to have a You're going to cut a
large swath of a lot of major candidates. And I
believe there's an agent by the name of Jimmy Sexton,
and he's always got a list of great coaching candidates,
and his candidates, you know, have a tendency to do well.
And you know, in January, a lot of them got

(01:28:22):
big time raises, and they got commitments to the current jobs,
and a lot of them were happy to stay putting
good jobs instead of risking the ever present danger of
replacing a legend. Kayalen debor is replacing a legend, and
that perhaps may be the most sobering aspect of this

(01:28:42):
whole darn thing. It's really hard to replace a legend.
You may remember or not remember, or you can read
about it. A guy by the name of John Wooden.
He finally retired in nineteen seventy five after winning his
final championship at UCLA with the likes of Dave Myers,

(01:29:04):
the brother of Annie Myers, who you saw on the
bench tonight with team in the w NBA All Star Game.
David was a friend of mine. God rest is soul,
a wonderful guy. When John Wooden retired at UCLA in
nineteen seventy five, he was replaced by a guy named
Gene Bartow, who had been at the who had been

(01:29:25):
in Alabama, Birmingham Bartow over the next I think three
years when fifty two and nine made a Final four.
Actually it was two years. He went fifty two and
nine and even made a Final four, but he left
after two seasons because it became thankless when you had
to follow a legend by the name of John Wooden,

(01:29:47):
who'd actually won ten national championships, even though it took
Wooden into his sixteenth year to win his first national
championship different times. Even then, Dean Smith at North ca
Carolina obviously a legend. The Dean Dome at North Carolina
is named after Dean Smith. He was replaced by a

(01:30:09):
gentleman named Bill Guthridge. Guthridge went to two final fours,
but only lasted three seasons. Let's go back to Alabama,
who replaced Barb Bryant, Ray Perkins, who had NFL times,
who had excellent, an excellent resume, an excellent reputation. He
checked all the boxes, genuinely did, and oh, by the way,

(01:30:31):
not terrible. He went thirty two and fifteen in Alabama.
That's not a bad record unless you're replacing bar Bryant.
Now it's not automatic that Mike checked that. That Caitlin
de Boor has success, But I think Alabama has everything
necessary to continue winning, and de bor has already proved

(01:30:51):
he can do it. Remember Mike Shula not so good?
But what was his track right before he got there?
Mike Debos, Dennis Francioni, Ray Perkins, the Alabama Crimson Tide
believe me. The folks, good folks down at Alabama know
all too well. They spent their times in the doldrums
for a while after Baron Bryant left and until Nick

(01:31:12):
Saban took over. But here's the thing I think, Nick,
I think people learned. There's no way people can remember that.
You can't go back to two thousand and seven. They're
not gonna remember. I think Caitlin de Bor arrives with
a ton of street cred way more than people realize,
maybe almost as much as Nick Saban when he was

(01:31:34):
hired in two thousand and seven. Even though Saban won
that national title at LSU, the boor came this close
at Washington, and he came much closer than Mike Norvel
or Steve Sarkisian or Dan Lanning have to date, and
those were the other I believe Alabama finalists to get
the job, even though I don't think sarkisi was ever
gonna leave Texas. The kicker, though, is that national championships

(01:31:58):
are in fact the standard at Alabama, and Kaitlin be wore.
I believe he took the job. You gotta love a
man who take that challenge on right. But I believe
he took the job. Why because he believes he can
win a national championship. He clearly believes he can do it.
There the Boar not only has the track record, I

(01:32:19):
think he's got the requisite confidence to undertake This is
the most daunting succession in college football history that I
can ever remember. That's just a fact. And so you're
replacing a guy who, yes's got a field name after him,
six national championships. But someone had to take the job,

(01:32:40):
and it's Kailin de Boor. And by the way, I
believe he's going to have success this year. Not predicting
the national championship, but I believe he's going to have success.

I want to ask Ian and I want to ask Kevin.
Am I giving Kalemdbor too much credit? Or might he
really sort of surprise and shock the world? And yes,

(01:33:49):
have success right out of the gate at Alabama. Let's
get the guy's opinions. I'm Bernie Frida, who come to
your line from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio Tirack dot
Com studios. Keep it locked right here. You're listening to
the Bernie Free Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right
back on the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Come
to you live from the Tarak dot com studios here
in Las Vegas. We are thirty seven minutes away from

(01:34:10):
the dance Sensation sweep of the nation. What kind of
brand new fool you followed it by? What my name?
Coming up the bottom of the hour after the chef's
update and performance, there are about ten big NFL storylines
that will be upon us sooner rather than later. I'm
just gonna hit on two of them this week. It'll
be a running theme over the next month, and we'll

(01:34:31):
start our conference and division previews next week. But I
want to bring in the crew. I've made some pretty
bold statements about killing to Boris one, O, four and twelve.
He's won everywhere he's been, came in with a whisker
of winning a national championship last year. I think Alabama's
going to have success right away. I'm not predicting the
national championship, but better than you think. I think they'll

(01:34:53):
get to the playoffs this year in the new twelve
team format. So, Chef, let's start with you. You never
want to replace a legend, which is exactly what Kailen
de Borr is doing. But did I oversell it or
do you expect him to have success?

Speaker 8 (01:35:06):
Well, he said it, Bernie. He's had success everywhere he's gone.
He wanted President State, he wanted Washington. I could definitely
see him winning at Alabama. Now, for me, the question
is whether or not he's going to have the type
of success that Nick Saban has, which is a very
rare company to join.

Speaker 9 (01:35:23):
At least could see him.

Speaker 8 (01:35:24):
Winning nine to ten games everywhere, But of course the
standards in Tuscaloosa much higher than that. They want eleven
twelve win seasons in contention for national championships. Whether he
can do that on a consistent basis, I'm not sure of.
But I know very well that they'll at least be
ten game winners, are very close to it every year
that he is the coach. I think he is capable

(01:35:46):
of that at least.

Speaker 2 (01:35:48):
Yeah, I do too. And he's got his quarterback back.
And remember we've got a twelve team playoff this year.
So if he just gets to the playoff and maybe
wins a playoff game but then gets knocked out out,
does that appease Alabama fans a year one because it's
better than nothing year one?

Speaker 8 (01:36:06):
Yeah, I think that would be fine. With a playoff
appearance and then a loss, it would be okay, Year three, four, five.
What's he doing in regards to one in the regular season,
how they're doing against rivals like Auburn, and to what
their performances in the playoffs. So the first year, I
think he'll get a little bit of slack in regards

(01:36:27):
to his ability to compete for a national championship. But
he's not going to have that long of a honeymoon period.
By the time year three or four comes around, they
will be antsy if he does not deliver them. If
not a national championship, then maybe an appearance in the
national championship game.

Speaker 2 (01:36:45):
Yeah, boy, honeymoon period even really thick about that. He
does come with quite a resume, though, Ian Roddy, let's
get your thoughts on the whole deal.

Speaker 11 (01:36:54):
Yeah, I like him a lot as a guy to
replace Saban in terms of how much success will have,
Like to what Kevin was just saying, Uh, I mean,
I I think to hold him to the standard of
Nick Saban is is just straight up unfair. And but
to be to be fair, I don't I don't know
that anyone is even though he's replacing Nick Saban at Alabama.

(01:37:16):
I don't think anyone there is sitting here, you know,
gun to his head saying you need to win US
seven you know, national or however money save.

Speaker 2 (01:37:23):
I don't know why.

Speaker 11 (01:37:23):
I can't remember off the top of my head right
now that Saban total there at Alabama.

Speaker 9 (01:37:27):
But six.

Speaker 2 (01:37:29):
Lu before he got there.

Speaker 11 (01:37:31):
Yeah, so seven total. But yeah, six at Alabama. I
I don't think anyone sitting here even expecting to board
to win six national championships. But but he's a guy
who's shown that he can win, and and like both
you and Kevin have said, he's won everywhere he's been.
I don't think there's any reason to believe he won't
win here, especially because he has a quarterback that we
know is at least a solid college quarterback.

Speaker 2 (01:37:53):
You know.

Speaker 11 (01:37:53):
It's however you feel about Melrose, an NFL guy, He's
a He's a solid college quarterback, and and we've seen
de Bor. All he needs is a solid college quarterback.
He had panics and he was great right away at Washington,
So I feel good about him.

Speaker 2 (01:38:08):
Yeah. How about this year? Can do you think the
Alabama could make the twelve team playoff this year?

Speaker 5 (01:38:13):
Yeah?

Speaker 11 (01:38:13):
Because it's only twelve teams. If it was back to
the four team thing, I don't even.

Speaker 2 (01:38:18):
At think they would go to navigate Georgia and Texas
and it's going to be a tough conference.

Speaker 11 (01:38:22):
Yeah, But I also to be fair, I haven't just
like sat there and named out twelve teams because because
we can sit here, you know, leading up in the
preseason say like, oh, well, it's a twelve team conference,
you know, anyone can make it in. But at the
end of the day, like we're probably going to be
talking about around like sixteen teams who at least feasibly
have a shot.

Speaker 2 (01:38:41):
So yep, it's going to be fun to watch. And
one of the things to note is with Saban left,
there was a belief that there would have been a
mass exodus because because Saban left, the portal opened that day.
That didn't happen. They lost some guys that naturally, because
that's just what's gonna happen you go to play for

(01:39:03):
a coach.

Speaker 11 (01:39:04):
Losing Bond was big the receiver because I don't know
who they have at receiver now that's my concern with them.

Speaker 2 (01:39:09):
But they got a couple of new transfers from Washington. Yes, yes,
So look it's got to play out the real the
real questions will be answered as you get into the
media of the schedule when you're when you're playing the
Texas's and the Mississippis and the Alabama's or checked out
the yeah, let's use in the Georgia's. So we'll see.
But Calen DeVore, he's been there done that. This isn't

(01:39:30):
his first barbecue. I think they made a good hire,
and I think that we are going to see Alabama
not have anywhere near the drop off that they had
when Bear Bryant left.

Speaker 5 (01:39:40):
And he's already recruiting well too.

Speaker 2 (01:39:42):
Really well, I watched that offense under him. Remember I
mentioned this. If you guys heard, Washington and Alabama both
had a common opponent last year Texas and Washington put
up thirty seven points in five hundred and thirty two
yards and the Sugar Bowl, Bama only put up twenty

(01:40:02):
four points in three hundred and sixty two yards. So
you're going to see a very dynamic offense that's efficient,
that's entertaining, that's explosive, and you get Alabama athletes running it.
And so this is a school that's had two Heisman
trophies in the last five or six years, so they're
no stranger to offense. And I think you're going to
see a really dynamic offense under Kalin Deborr. Comeing up,

(01:40:24):
let's talk some NFL look. The Hall of Fame Game
is a week from Thursday, a week from next Thursday.
True story. There are about ten storylines heading into this season.
That I've identified big ones. But I'm going to hit
on the top two tonight and we'll do the rest

(01:40:44):
over the month of August as we head into the season,
and we'll start our division previews next week. But first,
let's go back to our guy and his baffo performance.
To Chef Kevin Wired, we're all special.

Speaker 10 (01:41:01):
Everybody is different, but that's okay because even though we
might have had different color skin, different post of view,
who's the tall out team, It doesn't mean I can't
lay you down, woman, and that's your silky skin, but
my love to can start you one. No man has
ever been.

Speaker 5 (01:41:23):
Coress your thigh and what were we talking about, Chef Man,
You're on fire.

Speaker 9 (01:41:31):
No, I love it.

Speaker 5 (01:41:32):
Very soulful performance.

Speaker 8 (01:41:33):
Yes, so I had to warm up my voice, and man,
I got it out there for you. One of my
favorite parts of our show work.

Speaker 2 (01:41:41):
I am not no okay, I gonna say you better
take a cold shower before your next shift.

Speaker 9 (01:41:44):
They're a big fellow anyway.

Speaker 8 (01:41:47):
In the Olympic basketball exhibition game between South Sudan and
the United States, South Sudan out to a fast start.
They were up double digits in the first half and
the men's Olympic basketball team for the the United States
had to rally to beat them one O one one hundred,
Lebron James getting a late layup to give them the win.

Speaker 9 (01:42:07):
By man.

Speaker 8 (01:42:08):
That was a close call for the men's Olympic team.
They've got one more exhibition matchup before they begin the
Olympic tournament and that'll be on Monday against Germany on Fox.
As opposed to or excuse me, as for the US
women's Olympic basketball team, they lost to the WNBA All
Stars one seventeen to one pH nine and k Ungo

(01:42:29):
Bowala scored thirty four points as she was named the
All Star Game MVP. Angel Reasee a double double twelve points,
eleven rebounds. Caitlin Clark had ten assists in the NBA
Evan Mobley getting a five year max rookie extension worth
at least two hundred and twenty four dollars from the
Cleveland Cavaliers Major League Baseball. The Astros now in front

(01:42:52):
of the Mariners in the Al wester An in first
place by one game after winning against Seattle on Saturday
four to two. So the Maria have struggled lately as
they have now lost five straight games. Pittsburgh, though they've
won six in a row, including a four to one
victory against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. The Tigers have
made it four straight wins a seven to three win

(01:43:14):
against the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Dodgers win it
in eleven innings against the Red Sox seven to six.
They're getting more good news too. Tyler Glass now coming
off the angel list. He'll start Wednesday. Clayton Kershaw making
his season debut on Thursday the Milwaukee Brewers. They win
in twelve eightings. It's against the Minnesota Twins, eight to four.

Speaker 9 (01:43:35):
Out in the.

Speaker 8 (01:43:36):
AL East, it's the Orioles eight four winners against the
Texas Rangers. The Yankees fall to the Tampa Bay Rays
and nine won. So it is Baltimore up on up
ahead in the AL East by two GAMESPEC to you
burning all.

Speaker 2 (01:43:49):
Right, chef, good stuff, O man, all right. I'm going
to dub this year in the NFL as the year
of the comeback. Joe Burrow He's going to be facing
ana comeback season. So will Anthony Richardson so well, Nick
Chubb so well, Kirk Cousins for that matter, and of course,
Daniel Jones. They're all going to be fighting for comeback

(01:44:12):
play over the year. But you'll notice that I have
omitted one name that dwarfs all of them, God, by
the name of Aaron Rodgers. There can be no bigger
storyline in my view this year that what will it
look like and what will the scrutiny look like and
the pressure that the Jets will have with Aaron Rodgers

(01:44:33):
under center, fingers crossed. He's healthy and he's able to play.
You saw what happened last year, derailed by the torn
achilles tenon four plays into the season. He took four
snaps and that was it. So the New York Jets,
no one can disagree that they've been a long dysfunctional team.

(01:44:55):
They're supposed to be a Super Bowl contender now they
have an elite defense. They won seven games last year.
If they'd have just had marginal quarterback play, that have
been good. But it remains to be seen if Aaron Rodgers,
the forty year old addition of Aaron Rodgers coming off
the achilles, can be anything close to the Hall of

(01:45:16):
Famer that he's been in his career and the type
of player that the Jets just need badly. It also
remains to be seen if Rogers, who really has frankly
been criticized by a lot of people for his lack
of professionalism, including people within the members of the Jets organization,
can be a part of a genuine, legitimate, lasting culture

(01:45:39):
change that can lead to a deep playoff front. If
the Jets don't have that, I think they blow the
whole thing up. This is a big storyline and it
takes place week one. We'll all be watching now. Thus far,
I would say Rogers has seemed to kind of fuel
the drama that's prevented that's actually prevented the Jets from

(01:46:00):
looking like a top flight, first class culture and in
a model organization. Because look, just last month, here we
are Aaron Rodgers and the Jets in the news for
the wrong reasons as Aaron Rodgers missed the team's mandatory
mini camp for a previously scheduled trip apparently had the
trip scheduled before the mini camp dates were set. I

(01:46:23):
don't know where he went to Egypt or something, but
the media gets their teeth around that. That's just the
kind of fodder and the blood in the water that
just creates all the uncertainty around the Jets, and then
people start asking questions about Rogers level of dedication. Many
wonder whether he and Robert Soler getting along or you know,
really is is Aaron Rodgers really the answer to their questions?

(01:46:46):
And you know they pulled the trigger on that blockbuster
trade with the Packers, but now look, the Jets have
nothing to show for it, and the Packers do so
to me, the number one story this year will be
the return of Aaron Rodgers as he vised, you know,
competes with Joe Burrow and Nanny, Anthony Richardson and Nick
Chubb and Kirk Cousins and Daniel Jones will all be

(01:47:07):
part of the comeback Player of the Year Kennedy. It's
been none bigger than Aaron Rodgers. The second biggest story
for me is no one has ever won, No NFL
team has ever won three consecutive Super Bowls. The Kansas
City Chiefs. That's what they are attempting to do, and
in doing so, they would make major history. And as

(01:47:28):
long as you got Patrick Mahomes, the law firm of
Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, and hell what they hell
throw Travis Kelcey and Chris Jones into that as well.
As long as those guys are intact, they form the
lead culture for a team that I really believe can
do this. You're gonna have to have more than just
great quarterback play. You're gonna have to have more than

(01:47:51):
a you know, a dynamic offense. They're gonna have to
rely on a lot of leaderships. Not what happens, it's
how you react. And I expected to be a somewhat
bumpy road. It was last year for the Chiefs last year,
and let's not forget. If you think the Chiefs had
a target on their back last year, it's ten times

(01:48:11):
worse this year. And in doing so, the Cincinnati Bengals,
who promised to be a chief competitor, and the Baltimore Ravens,
who were a chief competitor last year, they've added reinforcements
that are completely designed to beat the Chiefs. So the
Chiefs are gonna need a great season. They're gonna need
to stay healthy, they're gonna need metal fortitude. They must

(01:48:32):
guard against any of the distractions that just happened. They
just happened because it's the National Football League and they're
in the white hot spotlight. They're gonna be on National
TV a lot, and they're gonna have to have a
little bit of good luck too. All Right, the key
is so far and fingers crossed. You want everybody to
be healthy for all the teams. So far, the Chiefs

(01:48:54):
honestly have managed to avoid serious injury to any of
their star players. Durability is everything, and their core players
aren't necessarily getting any younger. So it will do this
over the month of August. But for me, right now,
the two biggest storylines are the return of Aaron Rodgers

(01:49:14):
and the Kansas City Chiefs. Can they in fact? Three
pet two things will be watching intently coming up. Last
week I talked about that monumental seventy six billion dollar
NBA media ride steal. They were dancing in the aisles about. Well,
there's some news emerging and has the good feeling morphed

(01:49:36):
into uncertainty and hurt feelings and possible litigation. I'll explain
to you what's going on there. I'm Bernie Frattlewer come
to you live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio
Tirack dot Com studios. Keep it locked right here. You're
listening to the Bernie Fratter Show on Fox Sports Radio.
How right back on the Bernie Fratter Show, Fox Sports Radio,
Come to live from the tirac dot Com studios here

(01:49:57):
in Las Vegas. Come up in fifteen minutes, top of
the hour, the Dance Sensation sweep of the Nation. What
kind of brand new fool of you? Followed by what
my name? All? Right? Last week we reported on this
incredibly lucrative new NBA media rights deal and the only

(01:50:20):
thing that was left open, I think for a discussion
was whether or not T and T would you know,
perhaps match one of the media rights contracts, and that's
remained part of the game. But the different packages. There
were three total packages involving i think Disney, Comcast, NBC
Universal and Amazon seventy six billion dollars over eleven years,

(01:50:44):
being with a twenty five to twenty six season and
by the way, it even includes WNBA game which is
now worth two point two billion of the totals. They
got their flowers last night, and the next steps are
still taking place. One of the unresolved aspects of this TNT,

(01:51:05):
which has been home to the Inside the NBA, that
was the popular NBA studio show of course, that has
Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley Kenny Smith Shack Barkley said
he retires to He plans to retire from the show
after next season, no matter the outcome of the media
writes deal. But I don't know if I totally believe that.
But losing the NBA would be a bit of a

(01:51:27):
blow for Warner Brothers and Discovery. They could lose about
six hundred million in profit from advertising. But there's stockshures
that follow this year, so this is a little bit
of a prolonged process. But for the most part, it
looks like a real boon for the NBA until earlier
this past week. You start to hear rumblings and you

(01:51:47):
know a week ago was you know, lollipops and Sunshine, Disney, NBC, Sports,
Amazon celebration, the NBA celebrating more than their annual fees
even though they've posted lower TV ratings in this media landscape,
that's just a fact. When you think about seventy six

(01:52:09):
billion dollars, Oh my god, that's an incredible amount of
money over eleven years. And I've used this analogy before,
but it's worth using again because people hear numbers and
it's hard to context your lines. What those numbers mean,
so if you started to count from zero to a
million one second at a time, it would take twelve

(01:52:30):
take twelve days to come from zero to a million,
one second at a time. If you want to come
from zero to a billion one billion with a b
one second at a time, those twelve days jump to
thirty three years, twelve days, thirty three years, one million

(01:52:50):
to one billion. Now I'll make that seventy six billion
over the next eleven years. And you're talking some real money,
as Everet Jerkson one said. And this is a league
doubling their annual fees even though they got lower TV ratings.
So there's some risk here. But you know, Adam Silver
is not getting the universal praise that I thought he

(01:53:12):
might get. Apparently right now, until further updates emerge, the
NBA's media rights deal is sort of the subject of
real uncertainty right now and some hurt feelings and possible litigation.
So what happened? Well, Silver confirmed last Tuesday that the

(01:53:34):
NBA's Board of Governors approved the eleven years, seventy six
billion dollar rights and they were meaning that that now
advances to another stage of the process. The greemates were
not yet finalized and the commissioner did not discuss some
of the key terms and some of the participating networks
because Adam Silver went on to say much of it

(01:53:56):
is out of his control. Fair enough, I take about
his word whatever. But in this day and age, what
do you think makes sports? What do you think creates
these astronomical sellers we're seeing? It's TV rights, man, That's
where the money comes from. That's where the real money is.
So given the delicate nature of contract negotiations, rights deals
and certain wars, when you get powerful networks involved, it

(01:54:20):
doesn't surprise certain folks that there could be some infighting
here and it may not be made a little ugly.
So T and T Sports as of last Wednesday, they're
the unit of Warner Brothers in Discovery. They hadn't been
presented with the approved rights deals. The network, however, say

(01:54:41):
they fully intend to exercise its matching rights. They're going
to focus on Amazon's package and what form that effort takes.
That will determine what the next step. And this is
so for those folks concerned about whether or not ET
and T would remain a players It is a broadcaster
of NBA games, as they've been so capably over the

(01:55:04):
years and again that you studio show with Ernie Johnson
and Barkley and company. It seems to have become the
gold standard. So not a lot of people were happy
that that could potentially go away. So that apparently is
still not completely decided. James Dolan, the owner of the Knicks,
apparently he sent an angry letter to the Board of

(01:55:26):
Governors this past week. He was arguing that the agreements
are disruptive to local broadcasts that are still very critical
to individual teams. I can see that point. Now, Adam
Silver acknowledged that James Dolan's concerns were discussed among the
broader group and they're trying to keep the issues in
the family. And so it's uncertain whether the matter goes

(01:55:50):
It's uncertain to where that argument ends up. But historically
James Dolan is not a stranger to litigation and he's
not afraid to pursue this. So now you got local
TV rights, and I'm sure the good folks listening to
this program right now on five seventy am in Los
Angeles can understand that with the Lakers' local TV rights,

(01:56:13):
that's an example of this. Okay, I'm just merely saying
that there are some people raising their hand perhaps throwing
a flag, mixing my metaphors as to this deal and
whether or not the NBA will be able to perceive
with lot some speed bumps. So we've mentioned T and
T Sports, We've mentioned James Dolan and the Knicks and
their local broadcast partners. What about NBA TV, what about

(01:56:36):
NBA dot Com. Well, a big part of the focus
around the league's media rights again been on the status
of T and T Sports, but the division of rights
among the various partners, and they want to embrace and
push streaming. But a critical less discussed element of this

(01:56:57):
whole negotiation has been what becomes of the league's and
house media properties in NBATV, NBA dot Com. They've been
around since two thousand and eight and they've operated in
a joint venture between the league and T and T Sports,
So what becomes of those entities, particularly if T and
T Sports Besides what, we're not going to be involved
in the NBA after all, Adam Silver didn't know. There's

(01:57:18):
still too much in play. This is complicated. So the
media rights deal is reaching some type of conclusion. Also,
league expansion is assuming that there'll be a bigger focus
with formal efforts now to begin to perhaps add two
more teams. They're talking about Seattle in Las Vegas, and

(01:57:39):
those are the primary focus, primary options. But now publicly
there appears to be a rising concern within the league
about how to divide this would bring a ton of
new money into the league. How to divide this influx
of money, this windfall from the new rights deals with
the new incoming team own See how complicated this gets.

(01:58:02):
So it gets a lot more complicated. Then you start
to realize Adam Silver is juggling all these balls. He said,
Just think of the new media deals, for example, once
they're completed, when you're bringing the new partners that would
be potentially Seattle and Las Vegas, you're diluting those payments
to teams that are existing. No different than selling equity
in a business. There needs to be a fair amount

(01:58:23):
from the league office working with existing owners and who've
been there all along versus the newcomers. So there's a
lot of moving parts. We will continue to follow this.
Hopefully you followed all that. It's not easy, come it up.
You know what else isn't easy? What kind of brand
new fool of you and what my name? Keep it
locked right here. It's a Bernie Fratterle show on Fox

(01:58:44):
Sports Radio. Door.

Speaker 1 (01:58:46):
Listen to Fox Sports Radio Radio.

Speaker 2 (01:58:49):
Yep, that's right, you heard the man. The Bernie Fraddle
Show keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Frattle.
We are company a live from the Tarack dot com
studios here in Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio. Tireract dot
com will help you get there an unmatched selection, fast
free shipping for your road hazard protection and over ten
thousand recommended installers tirect dot com the way tire buying

(01:59:13):
should be. Well, we've come to that time in the show.
We've come to that time in the week. You know what,
you love it? You can't live without it, you see,
as you'll get buried. One said, you can observe a
lot by watching, which is exactly what we do on
the Bernie Frattle Show. Because certainly around the country, around
this great land of ours, from sea to oily sea,

(01:59:35):
and certainly around the globe, will people engage in activities
questionable activities. Now, sometimes those activities are silly and innocuous
and no big deal. But other times they are a
little bit more serious and dangerous and can oftentimes run
a follow the law can end you up in jail.

(01:59:57):
But regardless, regardless of the activity, regardless of the behavior,
any way you slice it, any way you characterize it,
any way you describe it, these events always leave us
scratching our head and asking ourselves, what kind of brand
new fool are you? So?

Speaker 5 (02:00:20):
What kind of brand new fool are you?

Speaker 2 (02:00:23):
Well, this particular little escapade takes you to California. I'm
not sure exactly what part of California, but it was
in California. So follows a couple of young ladies we'll
call the Miss Hall and Miss Banks. Recently, they decided

(02:00:45):
they'd made little money, so they would rob a store. Actually,
they robbed a nail salon, or actually it was a
nail salon with a nail supply store. And somehow they
managed to rob the place for about whopping six hundred
dollars worth of merchandise. And as the young ladies were

(02:01:10):
leaving in making their getaway. As it went, one of
the young ladies realized she somehow left her cell phone
at the store. So remember this segment's called what kind
of brand new fool you? They decided to come back
to the store just a few minutes after, and whichever

(02:01:31):
lady it was, Miss Hall or Miss Banks demanded her phone.
Apparently she dropped it during the getaway, so what After
tussling with the proprietor, she got her phone back and
proceeded to leave the scene in a black vehicle. But
at that point the police had already been called, and

(02:01:52):
the police identified the ladies in the vehicle. And what's
interesting is when they caught up to them, they were
outside their home where they live. About an hour later,
in the car they used to make the getaway. Will
police contacted them and reports say that all the merchandise
was sitting there right in the car and playing sight

(02:02:13):
as the two women were then arrested in and taking
to jail. Of course, they were caught on the store
surveillance video camera during the robbery and the cell phone retrieval, obviously,
and the woman who came in demanding the cell phone
reportedly assaulted the store's owner, who tried to trade the
phone for the stolen merchandise. Didn't work out, But in
addition to robbing the place, the suspect then threw the

(02:02:36):
owner of the ground and escaped with her device. So
Miss Hall and Miss banks, they posted bail no longer
in custody, and ironically, the phone I'm not sure what
kind of phone it was, actually was worth more than
the actual merchandise they stole, which I guess explains why

(02:02:56):
one of the ladies were so held bent on getting there.
I think this may have taken someplace, taken a place
somewhere near Los Angeles, but regardless, two women decide they
need money. They go into a nail salon with a
nail supply of all places to rob, make it out
with six hundred bucks, forget their cell phone, return to

(02:03:17):
the scene of the crime, go home, sit in front
of their home playing sit stuck out like a sore thumb.
Cops saw the evidence in the car, and now they
in trouble. Miss Hall, Miss Banks of Los Angeles, California.

Speaker 5 (02:03:31):
What kind of brand new fools?

Speaker 2 (02:03:32):
Are you all right? Chef?

Speaker 5 (02:03:36):
You're up all right?

Speaker 8 (02:03:38):
So a while ago I had one about a tourist
in Hawaii following their GPS down a boat ramp into
the water. Well, it has happened again on the Big
Island of Hawaii. This time they're saying it's a resident.
An unidentified thirty three year old woman parking her car
on the boat ram facing the water. When she told
authorities her car wasn't working, then she decided to drive

(02:03:59):
directly and to the harbor. So we've had two prior
incidents in the same harbor of people following their GPS
straight into it. Apparently seeing the water right in front
of you did not act as a deturrent. What was
it Michael Scott in the office who led the car
right off a bridge and into the river? Same thing,

(02:04:19):
same thing here, so unidentified thirty three year old woman
in Hawaii. What kind of brand new fool are you?

Speaker 2 (02:04:27):
Well, you know, short and sweet. But do you have
it all right? Ian Roddy, you're a veteran at this
What do you got for us tonight?

Speaker 11 (02:04:35):
Yeah, I'm happy to be back on this segment. I've
missed it dearly. Also, well done Kevin on the office,
shout out there. It was a classic scene. Michael Scott.
The GPS told him to drive into a lake, so
he did it. But anyway, my brand new fool. So
our story today begins in Houston, Texas. So I want

(02:04:56):
to introduce you, Bernie to a man named Sean Arnold. Okay, Now,
Sean decided I'll call him Sean, not Arnold. You know,
Sean decided to go out one day and pretend to
be a police officer. Don't ask me why. Don't ask
me why. Who knows how these fools' brains operate the.

Speaker 5 (02:05:16):
Way they do.

Speaker 11 (02:05:16):
But Sean had a whole uniform along with flashing red
and blue emergency lights and allowed siren for his car.
And his car was just a white Hyundai Santa Fe.
So it's not like he had an actual cop car
or anything. It was just a Hyundai Santa Fe. And
he had his own sirens and flashing lights and all that,
so you know, he was able to pass off as

(02:05:38):
an undercover cop. So Sean was driving around Houston's Memorial
area and he decided that he would try and pull
over another car that was driving in front of him. Again,
don't know what the thought process was here, but he
decided to. So he turned on his siren and flashing
lights and told them to pull over with his his
trusty megaphone, which they did.

Speaker 9 (02:05:59):
Ye.

Speaker 5 (02:05:59):
So, But here's here's the kicker.

Speaker 11 (02:06:01):
The unfortunate thing for Sean was that the car he
decided to pull over contained two undercover police officers, real
police officers, so of course they arrested him, and it
turned out that Seawan Arnold was already a convicted felon,
and it turned out that this was at least his
fourth arrest for impersonating.

Speaker 5 (02:06:21):
A police officer. Fourth arrests, fourth arrest.

Speaker 11 (02:06:24):
So he'd done it once in Houston already, all the
way back in two thousand and one. Then he did
it again the following year in Illinois. Then over a
decade later in Missouri, he was arrested for impersonating a
cop in twenty fifteen. So this guy, you know, there's
people who are addicted to drugs, alcohol, this guy's just
addicted to impersonating cops. Like he just cannot stop himself.

(02:06:46):
This is an insane story. I thought it would be
perfect for this segment. So Shawn Arnold, what kind of
brand new fool are you?

Speaker 2 (02:06:55):
Man? Oh man? Oh man?

Speaker 7 (02:06:57):
That is?

Speaker 2 (02:06:58):
That is got a lot of layers on that one.
And this guy, you know, I'm gonna put the Vegas
sides of minus one sixty. He goes a fifth time
to try to impersonate, right.

Speaker 11 (02:07:10):
Try to do it again. I think he's a dick
to Houston cops. Whatever be on the lookout.

Speaker 2 (02:07:14):
All right. Well, that certainly concludes another rousing edition of
what kind of brand new fool You, which now allows
us to, of course segue into our second favorite bit
we lovingly refer to as what my name? All Right?
So there was the Major League Baseball All Star Game

(02:07:37):
Tuesday night. So let's start with that thee all right?
In my Major League Baseball career, I played seventeen seasons.
I won an MVP, I won a World Series MVP,
but in my seventeen years, I didn't play the single
All Star game. Ian Roddy, what my name.

Speaker 5 (02:07:58):
Could it be? Willie Mays?

Speaker 2 (02:08:03):
Not Willie Mays, that Willie May. I was an MVP,
I was a World Series MVP, and I played in
the Major league seventeen years, but never played in a
single Major League Baseball All Star Game. Chef Kevin Wyrett,
what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:08:18):
MVP? Who I Am going to guess? Frank Robinson?

Speaker 2 (02:08:25):
Not Frank Robinson. In my seventeen year Major League Baseball career,
I was actually an MVP and even a World Series MVP,
but never played in a single Major League Baseball All
Star Game. Mark Ramsey, what my name?

Speaker 5 (02:08:41):
Tony Clark?

Speaker 2 (02:08:43):
Tony Clark San Diego guy. He of course played with
the Tigers and he's now very much in involved with
the player Gunia. Major League Baseball guys, it's actually a
guy with the name of Kirk Gibson. Kirk Gibson.

Speaker 11 (02:08:58):
See, I went Willie Mays because I was for like
an older player. I didn't know when the All Star
Games started, like maybe thirty three is when it the first.

Speaker 2 (02:09:05):
Year they had it. Will He actually played about twenty
All Star Games. But get this, you you guys have
to remember. I mean, Kirk Gibson had the biggest song
run in Dodger's history in nineteen eighty eight.

Speaker 9 (02:09:16):
Right, I just can't believe it wasn't an All Star.

Speaker 2 (02:09:18):
Never was an All Star yep, true story. Speaking of
All Stars, I am the last Los Angeles Dodger to
win the home run derby Kevin Wire. What my name.

Speaker 9 (02:09:32):
Ti Oscar hernandez Man.

Speaker 2 (02:09:34):
Nicely done. We always speak one of those in right.

Speaker 9 (02:09:39):
Yeah, I mean you said the last one to do it,
and he just did it.

Speaker 2 (02:09:42):
Just did it Tuesday, right, Just did it Tuesday?

Speaker 7 (02:09:45):
Right?

Speaker 2 (02:09:46):
All right? Uh, we are going to stick out. We're
gonna try that again. Aything, You're gonna stick with the
Major League Baseball All Star theme. All right. In my
lengthy career, I played a bunch of All Star Games,
and I struck out seventeen times. I struck out more
than any other player in Major League Baseball history in
the All Star Game. Ian Roddy, what my name?

Speaker 5 (02:10:10):
Uh, Hideki Matsui, Not Heideki Matsue.

Speaker 2 (02:10:16):
You're closer than you think, though. I'll fill in the
blanks in a minute. In my long, illustrious Major League
Baseball career, played in a lot of All Star Games,
and I struck out seventeen times, the most of any
player in the history of the Major League Baseball All
Star Game. The chef Kevin Wyre, what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:10:33):
Along the same lines? Maybe Derek Jeter, not.

Speaker 2 (02:10:38):
Derek Jeter, But again, you're along the same lines. I
struck out seventeen times in my long history in the
Major leagues while playing in All Star games. Mark Ramsey,
what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:10:50):
Harmon Killerbrew?

Speaker 2 (02:10:52):
Harmon Killerbrew, not Harmon Killer Who a great name? Former
Minnesota twin. This was a Yankee guy's a famous famous Yankey.
You might want to take a quick.

Speaker 5 (02:11:02):
Stat if I go again, as it a Rod not
a Rod Mickey Mantle.

Speaker 2 (02:11:07):
Oh Man, Mickey Mannle struck out more times than anybody
else in the seventeen Wow, think about that. You only
get a couple of bats in the All Star Game typically.

Speaker 5 (02:11:15):
Can you be feasibly considered one of the goats with
that stat being?

Speaker 2 (02:11:19):
Absolutely? Oh? Come on, yes, yeah, absolutely? Se hits five
hundred and sixty five home runs, great switch it or
great defensive player? Yeah? I mean, look, Reggie Jackson struck
out five two, five hundred and sixty eight times in
his career. He's a Hall of Famer, dead more, that's
twice as any as Babe Ruth and he at what
five hundred and sixty three home runs? Mister October. So

(02:11:40):
I'm one of those guys. That's why I got really
pissed off of people. Oh, Cleveln Cleveland Clark's turnovers, I'll
shut up with that. She also leads the league and exists. Okay,
so please, I'm not big on the ward on Lincoln's nose.
People always looking for something wrong. All right, I'm off
my high horse, all right, onward and upward. I'm mister Ritt.

(02:12:06):
In my career, I was an All Star Game MVP
and a World Series MVP. The only Major League Baseball
player in history to ever do that in the same season.
The chef Kevin Wyre, What my name?

Speaker 9 (02:12:19):
All Star Game MVP and World Series MVP.

Speaker 5 (02:12:24):
In the same season in the same season, only player
to ever do that.

Speaker 9 (02:12:28):
Wow fast. I can't even can't even come up with
a name on that one.

Speaker 2 (02:12:33):
No problem. In my career, I was an All Star
Game MVP and a World Series MVP in the same season.
The only Major League Baseball player to ever do that,
Ian Roddy. What my name?

Speaker 5 (02:12:45):
I'm gonna go with Barry Bonds, Not Barry Bonds.

Speaker 2 (02:12:50):
I was an All Star Game MVP and a World
Series MVP in the same season in Major League Baseball,
the only player to ever do that, Mark Ramsey, What
my name?

Speaker 9 (02:12:58):
Number two?

Speaker 5 (02:12:59):
Derek g it is Derek Jeter.

Speaker 2 (02:13:01):
Nicely done, Nice impression two of the legendary PA announcer
in New York. All right, here's a beauty. I this
is one of my favorite of all time of the
what my name? What my name? Bit?

Speaker 12 (02:13:19):
We do?

Speaker 2 (02:13:20):
In my legendary Major League Baseball career as a pitcher,
I struck out Ken Griffy Jr. And Kim Griffy Sr.
And I also struck out Barry Bonds and his father,
Bobby Bonds. Ian Roddy, what my name, man, I.

Speaker 5 (02:13:37):
Wouldn't even know.

Speaker 9 (02:13:38):
I'm gonna go host C C. Sabathia, Not c C.

Speaker 2 (02:13:41):
Sabathia. In my illustrious Major League Baseball career is a pitcher.
I actually struck out Kim Griffy Jr. And Kim Griffy Senior.
I also struck out Barry Bonds and his father, Bobby Bonds.
The chef, Kevin Wyrett.

Speaker 9 (02:13:54):
What my name I'm guessing Nolan Ryan.

Speaker 2 (02:13:56):
It is, in fact Nolan Ryan. I'm standing job, outstanding job,
all right. That's that's outstanding. That's that's good work right there.
All right. Recently, Caitlin Clark had nineteen assists in a
single w NBA game, setting a new record. She broke

(02:14:19):
my record, Mark Ramsey. What my name.

Speaker 12 (02:14:24):
Is?

Speaker 5 (02:14:25):
Their first name? Asia?

Speaker 2 (02:14:27):
Not Asia that you're thinking of. Asia Wilson is not
Asia Wilson. All right. Caitlin Clark had nineteen assists in
a single in WNBA game the other night, brand new
league record. She broke my record. Ian Roddy, what my name.

Speaker 11 (02:14:44):
There's a few names I'm trying to decide between it
and I'm gonna go Sue Bird, not super.

Speaker 2 (02:14:49):
Bird, all right. Caitlin Clark the other night had nineteen
assists in a single w NBA. She broke my prior
WNBA record with eighteen. What my name the chef, Kevin Wyrett.

Speaker 9 (02:15:05):
What my name, uh, Diana Tarassi.

Speaker 2 (02:15:08):
These are all good guesses, guys. It's actually Courtney vander Slut.

Speaker 5 (02:15:12):
That was not one of the names I was deciding
to vander Slute.

Speaker 2 (02:15:15):
Yeah. Still not a bad effort, Not a bad effort,
all right. In my career, I have twenty six leadoff
home runs, the most of any active Major League baseball player,
Mark Ramsey, What my name?

Speaker 5 (02:15:34):
My only answer was Ricky Henderson, But you said active,
so right.

Speaker 2 (02:15:38):
Not a bad guess, but he's not active. To the
best of my knowledge, twenty six leadoff home runs in
my career as a major league baseball player, the most
of any active Major League baseball player.

Speaker 9 (02:15:47):
The chef Kevin Wyret, I'm sorry to say that one
more time.

Speaker 2 (02:15:50):
In my career I've hit twenty six leadoff home runs
since the most of any active Major league baseball player.

Speaker 5 (02:15:56):
Chef, what my name Mooky Betts?

Speaker 2 (02:15:58):
Not Mookie Betts. Although he's had a few. I have
twenty six leadoff home runs in my career, the most
of any active Major League Baseball player. Eaton, Ronnie.

Speaker 5 (02:16:06):
What my name I'm gonna guess Kyle Schwarber. It is,
in fact, Kyle Schwarber. It's nicually done, nicely done.

Speaker 11 (02:16:16):
Pulled a lot of leadoff homer highlights from Kyle Schwarber
here at FSR.

Speaker 2 (02:16:20):
So let's let's have another. Yeah, good job. Let's have
another WNBA one. All right? Angel Rees just broke my
record of twelve consecutive double doubles. Mark Ramsey, what my name.

Speaker 9 (02:16:41):
Tarassi?

Speaker 2 (02:16:42):
Not Danna Tarassi. Angel Reese just broke my record of
twelve consecutive double doubles. The chef Kevin Wyre what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:16:52):
Sue Bird?

Speaker 2 (02:16:53):
Not Sue Bird. Angel Reas just broke my record of
twelve consecutive double doubles. And I'm not talking about it?
Or Otty?

Speaker 5 (02:17:00):
What my name could it be? Cheryl Swoops?

Speaker 2 (02:17:03):
Well, these are really good names. All three of you
guys gave great names. Somebody you've probably heard of, Candace Parker.
Candace Parker, you've heard of Candas Parker. Yes, all right,
I say we do one more. All right, I'm the
only Major League baseball player in history to hit sixty
home runs in a season three times. Mark Ramsey, what

(02:17:26):
my name?

Speaker 5 (02:17:28):
Say that again?

Speaker 2 (02:17:29):
I'm the only major League baseball player in history to
hit sixty home runs in a season three times? Mark Ramsey,
what my name?

Speaker 5 (02:17:37):
Josh Gibson, the great Negro League player?

Speaker 2 (02:17:45):
You always do it once the show, Come up with
a beautiful name. All right, I'm the only Major League
baseball player in history to hit sixty home runs in
a single season three times, Chef Kevin Wyrett, what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:17:57):
Sammy Sosa?

Speaker 2 (02:17:58):
It is Sandy Sosa. Sammy did it? Not Mark McGuire by,
Roger Merris, not Barry Bonds. It's actually Sammy Sosa who
did it? Three different times? You know what? The Dallas
Cowboys have been in the news. Their coach has been
in the news. Right, I'm a former Dallas Cowboy head coach.
But yes, I actually flew thirty combat missions during World

(02:18:21):
War Two. Ian Roddy, what in my name?

Speaker 9 (02:18:25):
Can that be?

Speaker 5 (02:18:25):
Jimmy Johnson? Not Jimmy Judson.

Speaker 2 (02:18:27):
I don't know who. I love the day. I love
the effort though. All right, I'm a former Dallas Cowboy
head coach, and I flew thirty combat missions in World
War Two, Mark Ramsey, what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:18:39):
Tom Landry?

Speaker 2 (02:18:40):
It is Tom Landry.

Speaker 5 (02:18:42):
Nicely done, Jason Garrett, I'll tell you.

Speaker 2 (02:18:49):
Let's do one more, last one because the NFL teams
are in camp now. I'm a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback,
which Jason Garrett actually was, and jays And Garrett actually
was a former Dallas Cowboy head coach. And you know what,
given what Barney Rubel's doing now, Jason Barrett Garrett doesn't
look too bad, does he? All Right? I digress. I'm

(02:19:10):
a former Dallas Cowboy quarterback. I actually fought in Vietnam
Ian ROTI what my name?

Speaker 5 (02:19:19):
Roger Stalbach?

Speaker 2 (02:19:21):
Yes, let's go.

Speaker 5 (02:19:26):
Oh that was good.

Speaker 2 (02:19:28):
That was really good. Great job tonight, guys. Good stuff
on Brand New Fool, good stuff on what my name?

Speaker 5 (02:19:34):
I learned something new about Roger Stalbach.

Speaker 2 (02:19:37):
The dance Sensations Sweeping the Nation will continue next Saturday night,

listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Right We're back on the Bernie Fraddle Show Fox Sports Radio,
coming to live from the Tarach dot Com studios here
in Las Vegas. Coming up in just a minute. After

(02:21:00):
the Chef's update Chris Prefet's World of Soccer. Lots to
get to, but I want to give you a name.
Cavin Sullivan cav a N plays for Philadelphia Union. He's
fourteen years old. Made his debut the other night, shot
down the field like a rocket, put a shot on

(02:21:21):
goal with his left foot, then proceeded to go on
ESPN Sports Center Live and give an interview way beyond
the savvy and wit and brevity and levity of a
fourteen year old. Just dude came from another planet. And oh,
by the way, Man City, they want to lock him
up when he's eighteen years old, even though that's three
and a half years away. Pretty cool to be Cavin Sullivan.

(02:21:44):
He's making five hundred grand a year playing for his
hometown team, Philadelphia Union. Google the name, watch for him.
I won't even tell you about the haircutter, what he
said about his mom. This kid is too cool for school.
Coming up Chris Profet's World of Soccer. But first we
go back to our guy, Kevin Wyre at the chef
with the latest.

Speaker 8 (02:22:03):
Yeah, it was a bit of a nervous ending for
the US men's Olympic basketball team. They do get by
South sud Dan one oh one, one hundred, but they
were down double digits in the first half, and it
took a late layup by Lebron James, who scored twenty
five points, to get the men's Olympic basketball team into
the victory column on Saturday. As for the women's Olympic

(02:22:24):
basketball team, they fell to the WNBA All Star Team tonight,
one seventeen to one zero nine, a Rique Ogumbawala scoring
thirty four points. That is an All Star Game record.
She had twenty one of those thirty four points in
the third quarter and all of those scoring. All that
scoring happened in the second half. Angel Reese had a
double double twelve points, eleven rebounds, Caitlyn Clark with ten assists.

(02:22:49):
Dodgers come from behind against the Red Sox for the
second game in a row. Key k Hernandez with a
game tying home run in the bomb of the ninth inning,
Will Smith with the walkoff to help LA win it eleven,
seven to six. The Brewers go to twelve innings against
the Minnesota Twins before winning at eight to four. Out West,
it's the Astros on top of the Mariners by a game.

(02:23:11):
After Houston beats Seattle four to two on Saturday. The
Mariners have now lost five games in a row, but
the Pittsburgh Pirates trending in the opposite direction. They've now
made it six straight victories, including a four to one
win against the Phillies. On Saturday. The Detroit Tigers over
the seven over the Toronto Blue Jays seven to three

(02:23:32):
to make it their fourth straight win. And in the
American League East, it's the Orioles ahead by two games.
That's after Baltimore wins at Texas eight four, while the
Yankees lose to Tampa Bay nine to one.

Speaker 2 (02:23:46):
Back to you burning, all right, Jeff, another baffle performance tonight,
all right, at this time every week, well listen, whether
it's in season or out of season, World Cup, Olympics,
or we're just talking off the pitch, rumors, coaching changes,
you name it, there's always news. They call it football.
Around the world, we call it soccer. In the United States,

(02:24:09):
we bring you Chrisphfett's World of Soccer.

Speaker 12 (02:24:12):
The greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drama.

Speaker 5 (02:24:28):
It's all here in this report from the world of soccer.

Speaker 13 (02:24:32):
Well, Bernie we it Man, even years are very very
busy here in the world of soccer. We are finally
at what I could possibly call an off season for
men's top level soccer. Now that Copa America came to
its thrilling conclusion Argentina over Columbia and euro Championship with

(02:24:53):
Spain over England being the crowning moments where we finally
finally put to arrests the seasons that were. Now, obviously
it's not completely true. We'll talk about Olympics in a second.
You know, we've got you know, MLS, Major League Soccer
and Liga MX here in North America, so it's not
like it's completely stopped.

Speaker 5 (02:25:14):
For one Leonel Messi.

Speaker 13 (02:25:15):
I'm sure he wishes he could get a little bit
of a break, especially with yet another injury plaguing him,
But for most of the top flights of the world,
for Europe and for everywhere else in the clubs and nations,
it is finally a pause.

Speaker 2 (02:25:29):
Now.

Speaker 5 (02:25:29):
I did mention the Olympics. They are coming up here.

Speaker 13 (02:25:32):
We're getting our first matches here in the twenty twenty
four Olympics in France, in Paris here on Wednesday, Thursday,
kicking off. I do get asked quite a bit by
people asking me about men's soccer at the Olympics. To
reiterate and in case you don't know anything about men's
soccer at the Olympics, because of these European Championship tournament

(02:25:56):
and Copa America that sucks up all of the greatest
players out there, and because of the massive demands put
upon them with the schedule and everything else. Again, we've
been playing almost NonStop soccer since last August.

Speaker 5 (02:26:08):
The men's side of.

Speaker 13 (02:26:10):
The Olympics is actually a under twenty three format that
means any players born on or after the first of
January two thousand and one will be allowed to play,
with a cavea that every nation is allowed three overage
players on those rosters. However, usually those top players are

(02:26:32):
playing again over in euros or Copa America or one
of the other things, or just needing the break.

Speaker 5 (02:26:39):
It's fascinating. This is actually the.

Speaker 13 (02:26:40):
First year we have all players born on or after
the twenty first century has begun, which is a little
bit of a jarring thing to really consider. The United
States is qualified they were through on the Conker CAF
Under twenty Championship. They will be taking part, so will Spain, France, Egypt, Argentina, Japan,

(02:27:05):
some of the ones names you've kind of come to expect.
It's still a fascinating tournament, but it's a lot more
of but with only sixteen teams in it and on
the under twenty three format, it's a lot more of
a look into the future, into prospects that might be
coming up might join the full men's roster, especially as
we look to the future of the US Federation and

(02:27:27):
the US men's team post Greg Berholter. It should be
something interesting to keep an eye on there. And as
much as I know that in the past, Killian Embape
did express his wish to play in the Olympics being
held in Paris, and he would be one of those
overage players at age twenty five, but he, of course,
through all of this and with the new signing at

(02:27:50):
Real Madrid, will not be in the Olympics. Honestly, well
earned rest for him, especially with a very big season
coming up with him with Real Madrid. But what about
the women's side the game, Well, the women's side is
a full tournament at the Olympics. One of the benefits
of the women's game not having these giant tournaments. I
like the men's Euro or the Men's copa that takes

(02:28:11):
so much importance on the senior side, it has allowed
for the Olympics to be a sort of secondary tournament
past the Women's World Cup. Not probably of the same importance,
certainly not with the same number of teams, but certainly
one that people will tune into, one where the top.

Speaker 5 (02:28:27):
Players will be going there.

Speaker 13 (02:28:29):
And for the United States women's team, they are unfortunately
in the group of death. They have drawn a group
with themselves, Zambia, Germany, and Australia.

Speaker 9 (02:28:41):
Group B.

Speaker 13 (02:28:42):
Germany is I don't know how else to say it.
They were the twenty sixteen gold medalists.

Speaker 5 (02:28:48):
They missed.

Speaker 13 (02:28:49):
They missed last time on some Double Jeopardy qualifying systems
that was all based around World Cup placements.

Speaker 5 (02:28:57):
It's very confusing to really talk about.

Speaker 13 (02:28:58):
And Australia is going to be without without their star
striker Sam Kerr. She tore her acl back in January.
But Zombia might be a very tough out in this group.
Germany certainly probably favored to be at the top of
Group B, not the United States. Germany favored to come
out number one in this group, so the US really
cannot really stumble at any point here, certainly certainly not

(02:29:22):
after their last World Cup. And to be clear, I
do not think this United States women's team is as
dominant as they have been. That age of dominance is over.
What about the World Cup champions? What about the women's
team from Spain. They are in a similarly just stacked group,
Group C. Keeping your eye on this with Spain, Japan,

(02:29:43):
Nigeria and Brasil. This is a phenomenal group there, and
we round it out with Group A that will have France, Columbia, Canada,
and New Zealand. Very good tournament here for the women's
side of things, certainly a lot to die into their
and certainly a lot of attention given to them. Probably

(02:30:04):
not as much attention right now as is being given
to the men's basketball team for Team USA, but the
women's team USA for soccer definitely someone to keep an
eye on and certainly in the mix to try to
get back to their old winning ways and bring home
a gold medal and get back to that age where
the United States was that dominant force in the women's game.

(02:30:25):
As for the men's under twenty three, I believe France
right now is the favorite, the home nation, and one
who has always had some phenomenal, phenomenal young talent coming
up through the years. Here, Argentina is not far behind them.
Spain obviously should be a very interesting one to keep
an eye on, although Spain will not be with their phenomenon.

(02:30:46):
Lamin ya Mal, who was their star in Euros, a
very young player, only about seventeen years old right now.
He actually just turned seventeen a single day for the finals,
so he played most of that tournament at age sixteen.
He would qualify and his club Barcelona did give the

(02:31:07):
approval to allow him to go to the Olympics. Clubs
actually get the final say on Olympics because it's not
really a FIFA thing. But Jamal absolutely deserves some well
earned rest. Once again, many of these players have been
playing soccer non stop for over ten months. Right now,
it's time for some breaks for a lot of people,
even a young star like Lamin Yamal, So it's time

(02:31:29):
for some other people to shine here. Great time at
the Olympics. I love the Olympics, Bernie. I've been to
Atlanta and Sydney in my life. I really wanted to
go to Tokyo when it happened before the pandemic. My
dad and I are making plans to go to Brisbane
one of these years, and now obviously coming here to
La I love the Olympics. I love all the sports
in them. I'm certainly going to be watching a lot
of judo this summer and Olympic wrestling, and yes, there

(02:31:53):
will be soccer in the mix as well. Enjoy the summer, Bernie.
We'll see you next time on the World of Soccer.

Speaker 2 (02:31:59):
World of Soccer, Chris Purfett, and yes, the twenty twenty
four of Paris Olympics. Upon US opening ceremonies next Friday,
the twenty six, it will mark the first time the
US men's national team, the men's national soccer team has
participated in the Olympics since two thousand and eight. Looking
forward to that, we'll see if they can fare a

(02:32:21):
little better than they did in Copo America. It's I
have no expectations for this team, none, and it's a
tough tournament, a lot of very good teams, of course, Argentina, Spain,
right on down the line, France certainly, as a matter
of fact, the United States opens up against France, the

(02:32:42):
whole country. They're ready to go in Paris, I know
it was just there in May toward the place and
went all around the Olympic stuff, and so looking forward
to that here coming up next week, we'll see if
soccer is making any headline for the United States. Coming up,
the Group, the Group Echo Chamber, the Group Think Echo

(02:33:03):
Chamber is at it again and they can't stop. They
can't stop repeating this one narrative around Caleb Williams in
the situation that he's entering with the Chicago Bears. I'm
going to debunk that pretty severely. So coming up, we'll
wrap up the show and we'll get to pressing topics

(02:33:25):
like that. I'm Bernie Frattle. We are coming to live
from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio tirat dot com studios.
Keep it lock. You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, we're wrapping it up,
the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. We're company live
from the Tyraq dot com studios here in Las Vegas.
Before I go any further, I want to thank my

(02:33:46):
broadcast team back in Los Angeles. They have been with
me since eleven pm Pacific time on Saturday night when
I signed on. That would be Mark Ramsey our technical producer,
turning all the Donalds, keeping us glued together. I and
Roddy are executive producer, doing a great job. And the chef,
Kevin Wirt, I know the updates. Great teamwork, great a

(02:34:07):
guy has great camarader a good job. By the way,
on what kind of brandon fool of you?

Speaker 7 (02:34:11):
And what my name?

Speaker 2 (02:34:13):
Never a dull moment? What the hell? What do you say?
We do it again next Saturday night as well. And
by the way, I will be on these airways, back
on these airwaves next Friday night at eleven pm Pacific time.
That'll be Friday night, July twenty sixth. Plenty of high jinks.
You know there will be trying to get Darren McKee

(02:34:33):
from Denver on anyway. Look, the bottom line is this,
there's NFL teams are in camp. The Olympics will be starting.
I'm on record they're gonna win the gold medal. Okay,
let's not overreact to what happened to South Sudan. This
is the world we're in. In the NBA, they come
and go as they please, they play with their food.

(02:34:54):
This team still has the depth, the rotations, the defensive intensity.
When they decide they want them ring it. They underestimated
this team. Top credit to salth Sudan. Top credit for
their effort today and what they did. And this team
is not the dream team. Sorry, you can think that
all you want, but you probably didn't see the dream team.

(02:35:14):
I did, all right. Caleb Williams is already in the
news every day and is that yet to take a snap?
And one of the latest of the group think echo
chamber narratives that's making its way around the water cooler
is it is now being maimed about that Caleb Williams

(02:35:36):
is being gifted one of these incredibly good situations as
he makes his way to Chicago. He's got DJ Moore
and Keenan Allen to catch his passes. He's got Roma
Dunesa YadA YadA yah. And people have gone so far
as to say he was placed in the best situation
for a quarterback taken early in the NFL draft, or
a rookie quarterback. And I think I heard Mena Kaims

(02:36:01):
say this. I don't want to pin her down on it,
but she implied that maybe the best of all time.
Maybe I misheard that. Come on, man, come on please,
And I understand there was an article in the ESPN.
They only went back thirty years. Well, I'm going to
go back to nineteen eighty three. No one will ever
inherit anything close to what Dan Marino inherited. And let's

(02:36:25):
make it abundantly clear. He made the most of it.
Spent sixteen years in the league, never won a Super Bowl,
got to one Super Bowl, set all kinds of records,
and was a Hall of Famer well deserved. Here's why
I say that Dan Marino inherited the best situation of
any rookie quarterback making his entree into the NFL for
a simple reason. First, he went to the Miami Dolphins.

(02:36:46):
The Miami Dolphins had two Hall of Famers and they
had been to the Super Bowl the year before. So
the Bears haven't made the playoffs in a while since
minchter Bisky was quarterback and the double doink. The Bears
have been a dumpster fight. Sorry they have been. He's not,
you know. So the Dolphins had been to the Super
Bowl the year before when Dan Marino got there. Secondly,

(02:37:08):
who was the head coach of the Dolphins that Dan
Marito inherited? Don Shula, the winning his coach of all
time So he goes to the winningest coach of all
time with two Hall of famers on the roster, all
kinds of offensive talent to the team that had been
to the Super Bowl the year before, and Marino was
part of that draft in nineteen eighty three where six
quarterbacks were taken and Marino was the sixth. He was

(02:37:28):
the last behind all kinds of guys that you've already
heard of, Elway, Kelly, you know, Todd Blackledge, blah blah blah.
There were no expectations on Dan Marino back then. Once
he got onto the field, he lit it up. So
if you go to the Super Bowl winning team and
you're coached by a Super Bowl winning coach who is
the all time leading winning coach of all time, I'd

(02:37:49):
say you're going to a better situation with all the
respect than Matt Eberflus and the Chicago Bears. Just my opinion.
But what do I know. Let the group think, echo chamber, prevail,
knock yourselves out. It's good du it for the Bernie
Fradders Show. See you next Friday night at eleven PM.
Keep it locked up next, They're great. Andy Furman on
