Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is straight Fired with Jason McIntyre.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up? Straight firefam, It's the Jason McIntyre Straight
Fuyer for Wednesday, July thirty. First, folks, I you know,
I'm a minority owner of a soccer team in Mexico, Nicoxa.
Last year at this time, we had a sporting event
called the Legas Cup, first time between MLS and League MX,
(00:33):
and I flew to Charlotte for the game. You know,
see the rest of the ownership group hang out with
front office coaches, blah blah blah. It went spectacularly bad.
We got destroyed, and I think I talked about it
the coach. You know, a couple of us were gathered
at the at the hotel bar. The coach came over.
It was a little awkward, and he was fired like
three or four days later, really ugly. We were tremendous
(00:56):
last season, so this season going into Legas Cups, the
excitement was palpable. Oh my god, A winnable game in
Minnesota then Seattle. I think we're in great shape, folks.
I you know, obviously he's a fan of like Steph
Curry Game seven against the Cavs. That would hurt badly
as a Jets fan. I will never forget losing the
ANFC championship game to the Steelers. Close game, We're getting
(01:19):
blown out halftime, we come back. All we need is
one stop from the defense. We had all the momentum,
and we couldn't get a stop in. Roethlisberger just grinded
it out. We lose, and then offseason everything fell apart.
Jets haven't been back to the playoffs since that game.
Those are two of the toughest sporting events as a
fan that I can ever recall.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Nikosa losing to Minnesota last night in the League's Cup
is right there with those. I mean, we give up
a PK in like the seventh minute. I'm just pissed.
But within the next ten minutes they commit a red
card foul and all of a sudden we got a
man advantage for seventy minutes. We're good, right, We pepper
the goal with thirty shots, we out corner kicked them
(02:01):
twenty to zero and their goalkeeper had the game of
his life and we lost one nothing and I am
upset and dejected, hurt. It's one of those It's stung.
And then Anchorman came on after the game on TBS
or whatever channel it was, and I just watched that
ended up going to bed. But that was a tough one. Unfortunately,
(02:24):
we have some good news as some NFL news. We'll
talk a little Olympics. Let's get right to the American football.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
All right, I'll just do a quick couple of minutes
on the NFL before we get to the Olympics. I
don't know what to make of this Denver Broncos quarterback situation.
I don't think anybody really cares. I think they have
the lowest win total in the league. The Broncos are
not going to be good. I don't care what anybody
Colin Coward tries to tell you. Yes, I'm a believer
in Sean Payton. No, I'm not a believer in this team.
(03:05):
This Denver squad does not look good. Zach Wilson has
been getting first team reps, and all of a sudden
this week, Jarrett Stidham is now getting a lot of
first team reps and bow Nix looks like he might
be the backup, and Wilson's working with the third teamer,
so I don't know. Maybe Sean Payton tried to boost
some confidence or get bow Knicks to work harder. I
don't know. Stidham has been in the system for two years,
(03:26):
so he's got the edge. But again, we're talking about
a Denver team where, you know, fantasy football guys ain't
taking any of the Broncos quarterbacks. I think Javonte Williams
is a good running back. We'll see injuries last year
and the wide receiver room depleted with the loss of Judy.
Do you really trust Courtland Sutton when you don't know
(03:46):
if any of the quarterbacks are good. The way Denver
played last year was like, Hey, we're gonna win with defense,
and we're not gonna make mistakes, and we're gonna run
the football a lot, a lot of screen passes Like
that's not to the eyes or ears of fantasy football owners.
But bottom line, Denver is not an interesting team. I
think they're gonna be drafting pretty high. I would say
(04:07):
top five next year. And then the question becomes real big.
You know, do you go for a Shader Sanders who
obviously played at Colorado, and then the Broncos could draft
I don't I don't know, no no idea that that's
what you know. We always look for quarterback controversies in
the preseason. That's one we thought maybe Drew Locke Daniel
(04:28):
Jones would be one that hasn't quite materialized yet. But
there is one kind of sort of brewing in Pittsburgh.
So Russell Wilson was signed by the Steelers. Everybody was like, oh,
my goodness, great fit, Mike Tomlin, Russell Wilson, blase and
then they go out and add Justin Fields and at
that point it's like, oh, well, they must have told Russ, hey,
nothing to worry about. It's all good, you're our guy.
(04:52):
We're just adding to the quarterback group. But still, Wi
Wilson could not have been happy. Right Well, now Wilson's
got a CAF injury and Justin Field's is running with
the Ones, and all of a sudden, it's like, oh,
Justin Field's looks dynamic, whereas Russ look kind of older
and you know, less commanding in the pocket. Fields, of course,
has been known to spray the football around, shall we say,
(05:14):
And you probably trust Russ to make fewer mistakes. I'll
still say Russ is the starter week one, but I
don't think the full season he's going to be the guy. Remember,
Pittsburgh had quarterback issues. Basically since Big Ben has left,
they have not been able to find a guy. I
was high on Picket last year. He's that was a
bad call, rare bad call by me. Pittsburgh, I don't
(05:36):
think this is a good team. I think this is
the worst team in the division. They have the biggest
quarterback question in the division. Sorry, Deshaun Watson is the
starter in Cleveland. I like him in Stefanski, I don't know.
I like Mike Tomlin. A lot guys forget about what
Tomlin had accomplished with Big Ben in the past last
two years. Small sample size obviously, I don't know. Ranked
(06:00):
the quarterbacks in the division and then ranked the coaches
in the division, and you look at it and you're like, oh, shoot,
Pittsburgh definitely is dead last for quarterbacks in the division.
And like I like Mike Tomlin, He's never finished under
five hundred. I'm not a huge Zach Taylor fan. Guy
went to a Super Bowl. I know it was a
lot of Burrow again, I'm not as Zach Taylor fan
(06:24):
John Harbaugh. You know, guy always wins in the playoffs,
He's got a Super Bowl, hasn't been able to get
over the hump with Lamar. I just wonder is Tomlin
right now, not historically, but right now a defensive guy
in an offensive league? Do they have the worst quarterback
coach in the division? And all that I say, I'm
(06:45):
probably still gonna bet Tomlin in Week one if I
can get the three in Atlanta. Yes, I'm looking at
week one. No, I have not planned my trip to
Vegas yet to endo the contest, but like that's where
we are. As the calendar gets ready to turn to August,
we get some middle quarterback nontroversies. And oh, by the way,
I know everybody's excited for Thursday, the big football game
(07:06):
to start the preseason Hall of Fame game. CALLI Williams
will not play, starters will not play. So you know
you could go out Thursday night, turn up, get ready
for the weekend. Yeah, and you don't have to lock
in to the Hall of Fame game with a bunch
of backups.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
I want to do a couple of minutes on the
Olympics here because I'm kind of getting into some of
the stuff. The problem is similar to how I'm having
an issue with If you have Amazon, Prime, Apple TV, Netflix,
all these streaming channels, you don't know when the news
shows are on and what's good. It's really a lot
(07:55):
of word of mouth unless the streaming service is putting
out a lot of ads. Hey, come and watch Presumed Innocent.
We have a big star named Jake Jillenhall. Yeah, okay,
so that's how I heard about Presumed Innocent. But a
lot of these other shows you don't totally hear about them,
and you've got to like go to the Netflix app
and then fish around and be like, oh, that looks
like something I might be interested in, And to me,
(08:18):
that's that's that's a non starter. Because I've been for
my entire life turning on a TV and early when
I was a young kid, looking in the TV guide,
you know, and then you easily memorize what's on when
there wasn't a lot of channels back then, and then
with cable you had Guide. You just click guide and
you scroll through and I can look at all the
fifteen movie channels in this van of like you know,
(08:38):
ninety seconds and see every movie that's on, and it's like, oh, well,
I'm gonna watch this while I do work. But for
the streaming services it's difficult, and with the Olympics being
in Paris and the time change. For instance, as I
record this late Tuesday night, I'm looking at the Wednesday
schedule three thirty eight am, rowing, you know, like that's
(09:02):
the kind of stuff I see on the schedule five
forty five am medaling for BMX cycling, Like none of
that stuff interests me. Now, there was a basketball game
early Tuesday morning, Canada and Australia that I wanted to watch.
Canada was able to come back and win. It would
look like a good game until the fourth quarter. But
like for instance, today's basketball games are not that spicy.
(09:24):
And literally the fourth to last event that is happening
on Wednesday is USA South Shoe DA and in basketball,
I'm very fired up about that. But and by the way,
I do think the USA is able to win and
cover in this spot, I would not advocate betting. My buddy,
who I go to some sporting events with, he had
(09:45):
texted me, oh, Usa was easy money against Serbia and
I was like, damn, I didn't even think to bet
on that. Anyways, I want to recap a couple of
things that happen on Tuesday at the Olympics. And again
I don't know the appetite for you guys in the Olympics.
I don't know if you just want so the highlights
on NBC or social media, but there was some interesting
(10:05):
stuff that went down. I'll quickly start with the Canada
Australia basketball game, and I know people are like, come on, Jason,
Canada Australia really like, let's settle down. Actually, no, Canada's
good and they're probably going to be number two. After
we win the goal, they'll probably win the silver medal.
That would be my guess. Canada is very good. They
pulled away on the fourth. R J. Barrett's playing out
(10:27):
of his mind. Dude, looks so good. Dylan Brooks is
showing up. Bottom line is Canada the problem. However, the
other team that was supposed to be a problem was France,
and folks, I don't know if you saw France Japan.
What a friggin game that was. Oh my goodness, Japan
with Rui Hachimra aka the Japanese Jordan was fighting toe
(10:49):
to toe with France and one Bin Yama and Gobert.
It was an incredible match. And then Ruey Hachimra gets
kind of a weird ejection. My first was, oh my gosh,
it's just home cooking. What is happening here? How can
this be an ejection? Seriously? And nevertheless, Japan finds themselves
up four with about fifteen seconds left, and then France
(11:11):
comes down. The guy bangs a three and he's fouled.
Four point play with ten seconds left. The arena erupts
because of course France is at home and France go.
Game goes to overtime. I'm assuming wembin Yama said something
between the fourth quarter and overtime because he took over,
He had the first eight points in overtime, had a
(11:31):
big block, a steal. I mean, wembn Yama was everywhere.
The dude looked like, oh my gosh, he got next.
In terms of the NBA, he was a force. Go
Gobert was just getting rebounds. Wembin Yama was everywhere. I
was so impressed with the kid and they pull away.
But you do have to wonder if there was some
home cooking going on, because I'm telling you, Haschi Mora
was playing incredibly and Japan had this five foot four
(11:54):
guard who made like six threes. And it is fun
to watch the international game because I'm telling you, if
you're able to make threes, anything is in play. Anybody
can go down, including the US. Now I don't totally
see that happening, but Germany will push to us if
they're making threes and we're not. Now you saw what
happens when we're hitting threes against Serbia. It's lights out,
(12:16):
say good night, you got no chance. Let me quickly
go to the three on three and I haven't watched
a ton of three on three, but I did check
it out. Tuesday. We had Franfreschilla on the pod. He
obviously he's connected with the three on three. We have
Jim or for Debt, the former BYU Legend, former top
ten pick on the team, and of course they end
(12:38):
up losing. Now, three on three is fascinating in the
Olympics because you essentially can bring the ball instantly down
on a rebound, right if the other team shoots it,
you get the rebound. You just chuck it to the
three point line where your guy is and he can shoot.
There's no like checking it, no inbounding, none of that stuff.
It's just instantly the ball's live. And I just thought
(13:00):
it was really fast paced and exciting, and of course
this led a bunch of Jabbronis who have no clue
what's going on in three on three to be like, oh,
this is crap. Why don't we have like good players here.
Could you imagine if we had our Russell Westbrook and
I'm just throwing out names guys Walker Kessler. Oh we
just again just toss it out names. Okay, here's the reality.
(13:22):
These guys have been working together for months. They've got
a good squad, they know the game well, they know
the rules. This isn't the kind of thing where you
can just toss in an NBA player and get a
couple practices and be good to go. I know these guys,
the NBA guys are some of the best athletes in
the world. It just doesn't work like that. So the
USA three on three team is good. I think they
end up meddling disappointing opening results. Now, the women's team
(13:45):
also suffered what was considered I thought a tough loss,
but that loss was suffered a month ago when Cameron
bring the star of the women's Olympic three on three team.
And when I say star, folks, I am not kidding
Cameron Brink. I'm sure you remember her from Stanford. Like
six ' four tall, blonde, super famous on Instagram, obviously
(14:06):
a great basketball player, shot blocking machine, and not like
one of these just like non movable bigs. She is
super athletic, screen and roll like she can basically do everything.
And they lose her to an ACL a month ago.
That just sent the team upside down. And all these
people out there on the internet, well, let's just plug
(14:27):
in Angel Reese. It just does not work like that, guys.
That's not how it works. You can't just say, oh,
let's there's three on three teams working together forever. Hey,
can you get out there and uh and give it
a go for us? No, that's not what goes on.
And they lost their first game, which was tough, and
for whatever reason, the Internet, and again I know I
(14:47):
keep saying the Internet, but it's just disappointing when there's
a sporting event going on, and you go online to
chick take the temperature. All these people are taking shots
at Hayley van Lyth, the blonde who also instagram famous,
only attractive and really talented at basketball. You know she's
been with this three on three team. I'm telling you,
with Brink they roll to the Gold, no doubt. She
(15:08):
played at the Van Lidth played at Louisville and then
transferred to LSU. Had a tough go against Caitlin Clark
in the final four, as everybody does. I think she's
playing at TCU next year. But she's a big deal
in women's college basketball. She's a bit of a polarizing player.
I think, you know, obviously very attractive and a lot
of followers, and like as we're seeing in women's sports,
(15:28):
that does rub some people the wrong way. Out of
her control, screwed up, but it's a thing anyway. So
both three on three teams lost, which was not great
for the US. I did tune into some volleyball. I
think I've talked about it. Chase Budinger, the former NBA
player who was like a really really good high school
player and then I think he had like seven years
in the NBA. Like that's nothing to scoff at, folks.
(15:49):
He is a good wing and he actually lives kind
of near me out here in LA and you know,
we're in a beach town, and he's a big volleyball player.
I know a couple guys who have been on the
volleyball court with him, and obviously super nice guy and
a really good athlete. And they they took a loss
on Tuesday, which was disappointing, but they'll still advance out
of group play and they'll have a great shot at
(16:11):
the gold I'll definitely be rooting for him, But like,
these are the sports that I'm kind of interested in.
At the Olympics, I'm sorry I couldn't totally get into gymnastics.
A lot of people were texting me, oh, did you
see the USA one goal. I was like, yeah, yeah,
I saw it. Okay, exciting. There was one goosebump inducing
moment for me on Tuesday, and it was women's rugby.
(16:35):
I never really watched rugby in my life. And when
we went to London, we saw our good friends who
used to live here and they moved back and their
son is like a very promising rugby player. He's huge
for his age and he's really like on like the
one of the top youth rugby clubs in London, and
(16:55):
so I know a little bit about the sport. But
the US was trailing Australia as the clock is like
winding down, and they essentially had what was kind of
being compared to the Auburn Alabama kick sixth. I don't
know if you guys remember that the missed field goal
that was short and run back for the touchdown in
tuscalou I think it was in Tuscalosa. Unbelievable ending, No, no,
(17:18):
it was all it was Auburn did it at home
against Alabama. Was done in Tuscalousa my bed. And the
US was facing Australia in rugby and the US was
like way deep in their end. They couldn't do anything.
And this one US player all of a sudden breaks
out of a tackle and there was somehow nobody behind
(17:39):
that defender and she just goes like the distance and
the crowd's freaking out and you can see her grinning like,
oh my god, is this happening. And it was just
gut wrenching for Australia, but awesome for the US and
we got a medal. So listen, I don't get too
heavy into the Olympics just because again, this schedule is difficult.
(18:00):
You know, I'm not a tape delay kind of guy.
It's just that not for me. And you know, between Peacock,
NBC USA, there's like all these channels, it would just
be so much easier. I know this is gonna sound silly.
If the Olympics were on like I don't know, ESPN,
you know, then it's like, Okayn, ESPN two, ESPN News
(18:21):
and you got all the Olympics. You just go one
place on the cable guide and then they're all there.
Fox Hell, we could do it Fox F S one
F two boom, done.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
Deal.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
But it's just tough with the streaming aspect, you know,
the time difference. This is swimming. Like, listen, it's exciting.
The Olympics are fun and I kind of got into
them a little bit. Obviously with the men swoops, I
will be heavy, heavy into it, but yeah, I'll wrap
up quickly with this. Sheryl Swoops, Caitlin Clark nonsense. Now
(18:51):
the tie in here is the US women's basketball team.
Remember does not have Caitlin Clark at the Olympics. Well,
guess what. Someone went and looked, Oh, how is the uh,
how's the attendance for the US women's basketball team? Folks?
I asked if this had been fact checked, and nobody's
answered it. But there's been no pushback against these numbers.
(19:13):
I guess it's not hard to look up attendance members.
So for women's basketball, the most watched game so far
in the arena was Spain and China twenty seven thousand.
Number two Nigeria Australia twenty four thousand, Then weirdly, Germany, Belgium, France, Canada.
Both matches had twenty thousand people. So there's some solid
(19:34):
numbers right for a women's basketball group play game. No
USA yet, And then fifth was Serbia Puerto Rico fifteen
thousand people. What where's the US Japan? Now, the US
has won gold a bunch of years in a row.
They dominate this and USA Japan only had thirteen thousand
(19:54):
people show up for the game, way below the other matches.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
Not great.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
And of course, the Caitlin Clark opportunists, if take an
opportunity to say, hey, you think that would be the
case if Clark were here? Nope, she is box office
people would have been lined up, probably standing room only
to watch Caitlin Clark with Team USA, and it's just
a severe miscalculation by the US. And I get it,
you know, she didn't make training camp because she was
(20:22):
at the Final four. But then you've got people like
Cheryl Swoops, the legend, the what, four time WNBA Champ,
three time MVP, All Defensive Player, Defensive Player of the Year,
her accolades. She needs no introduction. Cheryl Swoops amazing career,
and it should be noted she's a Kitlin Clark hater.
She's clearly jealous of what Clark is doing for the league.
(20:44):
Swoops was a huge star and a great player, but
she wasn't a national name to get people to the
games the way Clark is. It's just a fact. I'm
sorry that that's how it was, Cheryl Swoops. I'm sorry.
And so she's coming out now and being like, well,
Angel reaches the Rookie of the Year, because without her,
Chicago would be a bottom feeder and Indiana would be
(21:05):
fine without Kaitlin Clark because all she does is pass
the ball. It's like, whoa what are you doing? You know,
And I'll just wrap up with this because I don't
want to do too much. Kaitlin Clark w NBA's off
for a month. My point is someone in Cheryl's hoops
camp needs to be like, yo, Cheryl, listen, love your babe.
Can we dial this down? Can we just stop? This
(21:28):
is you're damaging your brand doing this. And frankly, listen,
I'll go off on tingents, I'll say stupid stuff. I've
got people who I respect will tell me, listen, Jay,
you got it. This is no fly zone, bro, It's
not smart. Like Okay, I hear you. People I respect
will come up to me, not gonna yell at me
online because that's not and that's not gonna do anything
(21:49):
but make the case why you shouldn't do it. And
I think somebody needs to get to Cheryl shoops because
this is getting ugly. Anyways, USA South Shoe Dana is
the big one today at noon if it three Eastern,
will obviously have a lot on that tomorrow. Talk to
you then,
