Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Well, that's right, you heard the man. It's that time
of week. My name is Bernie Frattle. We are coming
you live from the tyrac dot com studios here in
Las Vegas. Fox Sports Radio tyrack dot com. We'll help
you get there an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping for
your rodanser protection, and over ten thousand recommended installers tyrack

(00:25):
dot com. The way till you're buying should be congratulations
to the US men's basketball team. The Olympic team is
the advance to the medal round. I'll be darn. Are
you surprised? Well, you shouldn't be, although I want to
give Steve Kerr a lot of credit. And in the
words of Chris Rock, you typically don't get much credit

(00:47):
for something you're supposed to do. But I think he's
done a great job. But I'd like you all to
do me a favor. Please. If I never hear the
term dream team again, it'll be too soon. I was
okay ninety two, I'm not okay in twenty twenty four.
First of all, to me, a true dream team is

(01:08):
not merely a compilation of a bunch of hand picked luminaries.
But rather sort of a magical collection of people who
come together who ultimately in fact surprise you because they
end up being far better than the some of their parts.
So I'm going to tell you a story that takes
you back to the nineteen thirty six Olympics. I only

(01:29):
get to tell this story about every four years, but
it never gets old. See, because for my money, there
was only one dream team. So let me take you
back to nineteen thirty six for the Berlin Olympics and
introduce you to a little known Olympic team and Olympic
story that will chronicle to what I believe to be

(01:50):
the only real dream team. Now. First of all, back then,
earning Olympic eligibility was very different, much different, but it
set the stage for this unknown upstart, AAU team from Hollywood,
California that had been put together merely by a series

(02:12):
of open trials. So they assemble the team through a
series of open trials, yes true story, they entered the tournament.
They somehow manage to survive several qualifying tournaments and even
an eight team round robin at Madison Square Garden which
they won that gave them the right to represent US

(02:33):
men's basketball at the Berlin Olympics, and then the real
fun began. These guys all had jobs, and after the
players informed the respective employers of their intent to compete
in the Olympic Games, they were all told if they
did so, they would not have jobs when they returned.
But they were undaunted. Every member of the team except

(02:57):
one said the hell with you, and they made the
trip anyway. And then the fund really began. The team
caught a real break, and I mean a real break
in the opening round. Their first opponent was supposed to
be Spain. Spain forfeited because the Spanish Civil War had
broken out, and the entire roster was called to come home.

(03:20):
Can't make this stuff up. But after that, the US entrant,
this little AAU team from Hollywood, got hot. They beat Estonia,
they beat the Philippine or the Philippines. They mowed down
Mexico and that set up the gold match, the gold
medal match against Canada, which coincidentally, as you may know,

(03:42):
Canada is the home of basketball founder James Nasmith, who
ironically was denied access to the games because of a
PaperWorks nafu. The US won the game, won the gold medal.
The final score was nineteen to eight. Perhaps the reason

(04:02):
the score was so low is because there was a
downpour during the game. Oh that's right. You probably didn't
know that either. The game was played outside on a
court made of sand and clay, So they did it
in Berlin back in nineteen thirty six. But shortly thereafter
there are pictures that are out there of the players.
They're drenched in mud in their uniforms, happily sporting their

(04:27):
gold medals. To me, that was a dream team. Now.
That was also the first year that basketball was officially
recognized as an Olympic sport, and frankly it could have
been the biggest story of the games. If not, well,
if not for some guy by the name of Jesse Owens.

(04:48):
Having said all that, you have to give this current
USD team a lot of credit. But here's where I
find the circle of life to be always so fast mating,
I believe, and we'll have Mark Madina at midnight. We've
been talking about this for weeks after watching the exhibition
here in Las Vegas about three four weeks ago. I

(05:11):
do believe we are headed toward a collision course between Canada,
who beat the US just last year in the United
States for the gold medal, same as nineteen thirty six.
Interestingly enough, Canada has not medaled in basketball in the

(05:32):
Olympics since nineteen thirty six, when they took the silver
medal in that infamous nineteen to eight loss on an
outdoor court in a pouring rainstorm to the United States.
But Canada's got a little bit tougher draw. They got
to get past the home team France and victor wim
Minyama just for the opportunity to advance. But the US,

(05:55):
they'll face Brazil in the quarterfinals of the Olympics Men's
well the quarterfinals of course, this next Tuesday, and should
they win, which they will, they'll find themselves in a
semi final matchup against either Serbia or Australia, and the earliest.
Because the US was so dominant, winning all their games

(06:18):
by accumulative sixty one points, they got the number one seed,
Germany got the number two seed. They were plus forty
seven and they're winning differential. So the US has earned
the right to have, I say this in quotes, an
easier path. They were never they were never gonna lose
this thing. I'll eat Crowe trust me. I've asked Ian
and all my producers to save my sound for the
last three weeks. The NBA, the USA team is too deep,

(06:44):
too athletic. They have the finest run and jump athletes
in the universe, and they might play with their food
for a while, but when it matters most they're gonna
squeeze you because they run faster and jump higher, and
they're more accomplished. And that's just the end of the
end of the story. But as a result of their
performance on the earliest they could see Germany, Canada or
France arguably the three best teams behind the US, because

(07:07):
it's certainly not Brazil, North Serbia or Australia. The earliest
the US could see any of those top three teams
is the final, so it gets more fun. On Tuesday,
you have Winter go Home quarterfinal games Victor Weman, Yama
and France. Well, they'll take on Shay Gilgis in Canada.

(07:27):
And then you've got reigning World Cup champ Germany, who's
a fine looking team, a lot of skilled players and
would they give the US a tussel? Sure, they'll play
just well enough to lose. They'll face Giannis and Greece,
and then of course Australia, who won the bronze at
the last Olympics. They drew a matchup with Serbia and

(07:50):
Jokic Tuesday. If you lose, you're done. Tuesday's winners will
play Thursday in the semi finals in the United States.
Brazil will face the winner of Serbia Australia, and then
Germany Greece will take on the winner of France Canada
next Saturday. By the time I sign on this show,

(08:11):
it will be a fake accompany. My prediction the US
will beat Canada, doesn't matter. Who's gonna win the bronze.
In case you missed it, Puerto Rico, Spain and that
plucky South Sudan team that became a fan favorite. They
were all eliminated in the group stage US three and
oh they lock up the number one overall seed. They

(08:32):
beat Puerto Rico one oh four eighty three. And I
give Steve Kerr a lot of credit. I think he's
done some things that in terms of making adjustments and
putting lineups on the floor and rotations on the floor
that best suited the competition. They were playing simple as that.
But can we please pump the brakes on the Dream Team.

(08:54):
I don't want to hear anything about a dream team.
This is not a dream team. The US was minus
five hundred to win the gold medal. That means they
had an eighty four percent chance. This is before the
tournament ever started. It's much higher than that. Now. I
think they were undervalued. I know they had a couple
of scares in the you know, in the exhibition games,

(09:16):
they were still five and zero and they might not
have won by the margin you wanted them to win,
but they won. They did what they needed to do
when they needed to do it. Because the NBA is
still the best league in the world and it's not
even close. But please the dream team.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
No.

Speaker 2 (09:31):

All right back on the Bernie Frattles Show, Fox Sports
Radio come to you live from the tyrak dot com
studios here in Las Vegas. Take you up to three
am Pacific, six am Eastern jam pack tonight. We're just
getting started. It's welcome and a gentleman, a true fan favorite,
a legend respected nationally and certainly here in Las Vegas,

(11:51):
a professional sports better or a true advantage gambler. You
also hear him on contown the Kickoff right here on
Sunday morning. Say hello, good buddy, Bill Krackenberger, the crack Man.
How you doing, big.

Speaker 6 (12:02):
Fellows, Hey, Bernie, thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
On, Buddy, Always a pleasure. And I want to start
with this. The NFL is back as it were preseason
is underway right out of the gate. A game is
called the third quarter due to rain, which reminds everybody
read the house rules on the ticket. When you make
a bet, your thoughts.

Speaker 6 (12:22):
Yeah, good, good good subject. And you know, for people
that don't know, this is really an unscripted show, I
have no idea what you're going to ask me tonight,
but that's a great starter right there, and I'll just play.
I'm surprised all the people that gamble on the opening
game that do not know the rules. Now, I'm not
trying to say that it's black and white, but you

(12:44):
have to realize a game. If you have the under
on the game, you're obviously you're happy as can be.
But that public life's betting over. So you know, sixty
five percent of them bet over on the game, and
they said they feel they should get paid. A game
has to go normally. Book the book. It does change.
I want to give you an in general sense fifty
five minutes, and I know people were giving one of

(13:05):
the guys online who actually does talk a lot, Jeff
Benson down at Circa here in Vegas. He does talk
a lot about the rules, regulations and what goes on
the answers, tweets, and so he's going to be open
to some criticism. He's got to stake some back and forth.
And sure enough, Jeff was bombarded with people saying, you're

(13:25):
supposed to pay. It went over already earlier and we
should get paid. And then these these sports books back
East that came into the country, the DraftKings, the Fandels,
all the sports books that have these type of refund
wagers trying to give a courtesy back to the customer.
So they gave refunds on these type of situations in

(13:46):
the past, So what does that open the door for
everyone to expect refunds in the future. And it didn't happen,
and people are upset, they're mad. It's all misplaced rage.
Everyone is claiming that, you know, and someone like myself
who actually did wager on the game. I wagered on it,

(14:07):
and I had it looked like now it was early,
it was a third quarter, but it looked like I
probably was on the wrong side of the opening game.
I had Houston. I actually took two points with Houston.
I actually sent you a copy of one of my
two thousand dollars bets that I made on Houston.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
Plus two.

Speaker 6 (14:28):
I mean, listen, it could have but they just missed
a field goal. It could have on either way, but
I'm not upset either way. Last year twice, both times
I was winning preseason game. Both times AGA they got
called from lightning. They got called due to lightning. So
I understand the way it goes. I also sent you
copies today. If some other games I bet and you
see that, yeah, I'm just saying, you see it so

(14:49):
I get the best of the line, but you still
have to win the game. So it's a lot of
people are new to the sports betting scene too, so
I'm not really coming down on them. I'm just saying,
just know your rules and regulations with the sports books
you play in, so you know it's I don't want
to sound like I'm mad about people not knowing the

(15:10):
rules because some people, I guess won't know. They're brand
new the sports betting and that's what these places depend on.
Someone these newbies coming in and just bet in the
opening game just to have action. As you can see,
I bet the game. I had a nice edge on
the game before tip off.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
But to your point, if you're going to wager your
hard earned money, understand the rules before you're going in,
so you don't feel like you're being slighted. You know,
sports books grade thousands of tickets, not necessarily sticking up
form its, so people know. They typically don't grade action
until after the final is complete because they don't really
have the resources and all that. But I don't want

(15:45):
to go into that. I do want to go into
the preseason crack because the other thing that bothers me
is you'll hear some fine folks that will go on
and say you got to be degenerate to Brett preseason
it's the exact opposite. It's the only professionalist board where
you have to two teams or one side cares if
they win and the other does. We have two key
games coming up this next week two coaches, John Harbaugh,

(16:09):
who's like forty and nineteen against the number in the
preseason against Nick Siriani who's one and seven. Then the
following day you have another couple of coaches Robert Sala
loves to win in the preseason. He's seventy percent against
his bread against Dan Quinn in Washington, who's five and
sixteen against the numbers. So you've got two key matchups

(16:32):
or one side the coach wants to win, and the
other side they don't really care. You don't see that
in professional sports. Talk about your philosophy and betting the preseason, you.

Speaker 6 (16:42):
Know, I wish that we had, you know, seventeen weeks
of preseason only three weeks of the regular season. That's
how strong the preseason has been to me over the years.
And I get a charge out of when someone text
me and says, well, you're must be a degenerate betting
preseason anyway. Well, honestly, they don't know what they're talking about.

(17:02):
The preseason is all about information. It's all about social media.
It's all about following your socials, your coaches, your strength coaches.
You know, if it can come from anyone. It can
come from a coach's child, the coach's son, or someone
in the family related that maybe get here's something and he,
you know, he just you know, blurts it out on

(17:24):
Twitter or one.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
Of the socials.

Speaker 6 (17:26):
And it's all about what information and knowing what the
coaches themselves do, Like you said, the harbaws, the solos
knowing what they do.

Speaker 2 (17:35):
And as you can see what these.

Speaker 6 (17:36):
Two games you mentioned, the Baltimore Philadelphia game Baltimore laying
three points in that game. That's a lot of points
for anyone. By the way, preseasons are normally around pick
them maybe two to two and a half, very rare
anything goes over three. I see a couple of games
that are three, even a game that is four. This
is one of the games that is three. Baltimore they know, really,

(18:00):
so that's probably the number one team of preseason that
they know that their coach plays hard. So Baltimore minus
threw over Philadelphia, who, you're right, don't really, Sirianni's really
probably not going to care for that opening game. No
one wants to get anyone hurt. Going back to the
Jet game, the Jet game actually is pretty funny. It
opened up pick them and actually Washington took the money
Washington minus one and a half. But maybe they're just

(18:23):
thinking that, you know, after what happened last year with Rogers.
Obviously he's not even gonna standy club. I'm not saying that,
but a maybe maybe they're thinking that, maybe that Salah
will just say, you know what, I'm not getting no
one hurt out of my starters after what happened last
year or early even though it was week one of

(18:44):
the regular season. That's just a hypothesis. Now I don't
know the situation there, but I'm telling you how. It's
how it goes down, and how preseason football works. It's
all about following socials, following what the coaches say, and
of course what Bernie Frattle just said, knowing the position
of the coaches throughout the years and previous years. So

(19:07):
that's all three good factors to handicap the preseason. And boy,
oh boy, do I wish we had more preseason than
only three weeks.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
One other quick one, Cracked. Look at the quarterback depth
chart rotations you're probably going to see in that Jets game.
To Rob Taylor play almost a half. This is a
veteran quarterback who knows how to move the ball up
and down the field against some guys next week who
might be working a nap auto parts. Nothing wrong with that,
but you look for those mismatches as well. Look at ahead.

(19:37):
What are some things that are top of mind as
we look toward the NFL season?

Speaker 6 (19:41):
Crack, Well, I want to finish off with what you're
saying there. Last point on preseason. It's not unusual to
see a game where the team is favorite by one
for the full game, but yet Favorite by three in
the first half because of just that, because of a
a quarterback that seasons will play and you're hearing will

(20:03):
play and you probably will. So therefore the first half
is the stronger bet. I know myself. Next week I
bet just based on socials and things I have read.
I have bet New England where I found uh you
know I found. I already found the line on New
England first half, which is unusual here we are not
games out till next Thursday. But so situationally, if I

(20:25):
know someone's starting or if someone's not starting, I will
look for a first half bet just as good as
a game bet. It's not stronger at certain situations. Now,
going back to what you're saying for the for the
regular season. Wow, you know, I'm all about futures and
betting lots of different things going into the regular season,

(20:45):
and you know, I think anything with plus money on
season wins the day of the pre sorry, the day
of the first game the first week might be some
some decent takes. What I mean by that is, you
know there's sports books that that are forced to overmove

(21:06):
lines normally on the overs on on teams. So I
think anything with some plus money it might be worth
a second look or a look at. And what I
mean like here, we have a couple of sportsbooks in
town here that you can actually take under, uh you know,
wins that you can actually use the alternative line taking

(21:27):
like two to one, two and a half to one,
even three to one, which I have some. I have
some some some teams that I actually did take uh
you know, some some plus money on. I would look
towards week one situationally at week one, when week ones
rolling around, I'm going that Sunday morning, right before game one,

(21:49):
or that Thursday, because there's a Thursday night game and
a Friday night game this year. I would look at
those teams to see if the sports books have overmoved
the overs on those season wins, and maybe grab up
some under money on some of them. And just to
let you know, some of the ones I put under
money on already. I bet under on the Chargers, under
on the Packers, under on the Giants, so I already

(22:13):
bet these already under or I found some good edges
and good lines. But I'll look again late late and
just like literally right before the games hour or two
before the games. We'll be on air on Countdown to
Kickoff that Sunday morning, but I'll also be looking doing
the commercials to see what of the sportsbooks may be.
Maybe actually give you an extra you know, twenty thirty

(22:34):
cents on juice to try to get some TakeBack on
their season wins and bet some more.

Speaker 2 (22:38):
Unders crat great stuff. As always as usual, I wish
we had more time. Countdown to kick off your great
show starts up again. Win.

Speaker 6 (22:48):
We start up again on August eighteenth, Sunday the eighteenth,
our first week, and.

Speaker 2 (22:54):
We're going to go year round.

Speaker 6 (22:55):
Now Countdown to kickoff, the Countdown to tip offf I.
I look really look forward to the preseason stuff on
the eighteenth. I'm sure I'll have a few things to
talk about before we go on. When we go on
air that night, there's still some games, so I really
appreciate it and look forward to speaking to you again, Bernie.
Thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (23:12):
Out as always. We'll see you soon. Pal. That is
the legend of Bill Krackenberger, the crack Man, two other
very quick things. First year coaches in the preseason love
to win that first home game. Keep an eye on that.
That's been a moneymaker and when the regular season starts
Week one, divisional dogs, they've been about seventy three percent
the last eight years. I've gone on Jason McIntyre's podcast

(23:35):
the last three years, right before Week one, we've talked
about that. It seems to hit every year. This year,
I think there's only a couple. But the dogs look good,
good on both sides. Coming up, did you watch the
preseason kick out the Hall of Fame game Thursday night?
Things might have looked a little different. I want to
talk about that. But first let's go to a gentleman.

(23:58):
Well to describe him as John and for Senda would say,
would be to drain the vocabulary of superlatives. Let's say
hello to Dan Bayer. Dan, welcome in. It's always great
to have you on Saturday night. It's great to have you, Bernie,
be with you, Bernie.

Speaker 7 (24:12):
It's great to be alongside you and hanging out and
getting ready for football season. We're all kind of kind
of getting that itch for sure, and you're laying down
some really good reasons to maybe lay down some coin
in those preseason matchups. No preseason football to talk about here,
we do have some football news. Tyreek Hill did restructure
his contract with the Miami Dolphins. It's a three year

(24:33):
restructure deal. Ninety million dollars now get sixty five million
dollars guaranteed as part of that restructuring. No New Year's
added onto Hills deal, but a little bit more money
up front. At the Olympics in Paris, Saturday was amazing,
especially for the United States, who brought home eighteen medals.
Simone Biles one gold in the vault, Katie Ledeki another gold,

(24:53):
her gold in the eight hundred meters historic in this fashion,
first woman to win an event four times in all
Big Games in just the seventh Olympian ever to accomplish
that feat. She now has nine goals in her career
fourteen medals overall. US women's soccer team won in dramatic
fashion on Saturday, while the US men's basketball team no dramas.

(25:14):
They were out in Puerto Rico. But the bracket is
now set. US will get the top seed. They'll end
up facing Brazil in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. Coming up
on Sunday, we can look ahead to John Rahm and
Xander Schaffli. It's off the leader board and he found
a round of men's golf, they are going for the gold.

Speaker 2 (25:31):
Others is well in contention.

Speaker 7 (25:33):
But at Shafley and ram right now at fourteen hunder
par gold metal match Novak Djokovic against Carlos Salkarez.

Speaker 2 (25:38):
That should be good.

Speaker 7 (25:39):
In US women's basketball team wraps up pool play taking
on Germany at eleven o'clock Eastern time. Jack Flerty went
seven innings, struck out seven, and allowed five hits in
zero earned runs as the Dodgers beat the Aist had
nothing in Flarity's debut for the Blue sho Heyo Toni
three steels joining the thirty thirty Club, Padres got past.

Speaker 2 (25:56):
The Rockies three to two.

Speaker 7 (25:58):
Mets well, they fell to the Angel spot for Meritors
rally and pick up a six to five win against
the Phillies in ten And I know our technical producer
Mark Ramsey probably doesn't want to hear this.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
The White Sox have lost.

Speaker 7 (26:08):
There at nineteenth straight, falling to the Twins on Saturday
six to two. Bud Crawford wins the unanimous decision to
claim the WBA Junior Middleway to title.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
Bernie back to you, okay, Bud, good stuff Dan as always,
Hey folks, did you watch the Hall of Fame game
Thursday night, you saw a distinctive difference. Hold that thought.
I'm gonna come back to it in a big way.
But I want to draw an analogy. Years ago, Tim
Russert was interviewing Whitey Ford and Yogi Bearra, and Russer

(26:38):
looked at Ford and said, Whitey, can you tell me
your favorite Yogi Bearra story? And Whitey said, that's easy.
We call it the four ball story. Took place back
in the day where I was pitching against the White Sox,
and first pitch of the game, Louis Aparicio, Hall of
Famer Louisi Aparicio dumped the perfect bunt for a base hit.

(26:58):
Up comes Nelly Fox. First pitch doubles off the wall.
Two pitches, two hitters, men on second and third. Nobody out.
Al Smith, the third hitter digs in white. He snaps
off a curveball hits him in the knee. Al Smith
takes first base. Three hitters, three pitches, bases loaded, nobody out.

(27:21):
Up comes Ted Klezuski with those big guns. First pitch
fastball deposits it four hundred and sixty feet into the
center field bleachers. Four pitches, four hitters four nothing nobody out.
Yankees manager Casey Stinkle comes out to the mound livid.
He looks at Whitey, He looks at Yogi. He looks

(27:42):
back at Whitey. He looks back at Yogi. Says, Yogi,
what the hell's going on around here? Does Whitey have
anything tonight? Yogi goes, how the heck do I know?
I haven't caught a single pitch yet. Take a look
at that kickoff. Everybody was nonplus about what is this? Yeah?
I get it. It looks weird. It's a radical change.

(28:05):
The changes were made in hopes of limiting the high
speed collisions, but also trying to incentivize teams to return
the ball more. You know, last year seventy eight percent
of all kickoffs were touchbacks. That doesn't it make for
exciting kickoff? And just a few years before that eighty
percent were returned, and just the year before last year

(28:29):
almost forty percent were returned, so it's dramatically down. As
a matter of fact, there were only four kickoffs returned
for touchdowns the entire season in twenty twenty three, but
Thursday Night Thursday Night, of the eight kickoffs, seven were
actually at least return Now give special teams coordinators time

(28:50):
to figure this out. They don't know what the best
strategy is, and let's be honest. Thursday night's game was
played by a bunch of well intentioned finance athletes that
will most likely be working in NAPA Auto Parts in
about a month. Muhing wrong with that. Good clean work,
good Christian values, But they're probably not NFL players. So

(29:11):
what do you expect the special team coaches to do.
You've got coverage players. They can't move until the ball
hits the ground or a returner catches it in the
landing zone, so hangtime is no longer a key factor.
And kicks and kicks it hit the ground on the
landing zone and get into the end zone. Well, that'll
be ideal since those touchbacks only give the return team

(29:31):
the ball to twenty. But the danger will be that
if you kick it into the end zone, the return
team is going to get the ball to forty. So
look for returners. As this thing starts to evolve, the
play might look a little bit more like a traditional
running player than the old kickoff return. So I'm wondering
a couple of things. Might we see more running backs

(29:53):
as returners, so you can capitalize on their ability to
find a hole better than some of these returners or
receivers or bigger guys that you know are just special teams guys.
And by the way, special teams are very important, very
important in football, even in high school football. They're played
football past high school. But you want to make a team,
you want to impress a coach, blow somebody up on

(30:13):
special teams. I never want to kickoff to go away
after they got to figure this out once and for all,
and this is only a one year experiment, but I'm
you know, in their efforts to overhaul the kickoff to
revive a player that used to have a lot of excitement.
I hope it works. I hope they find a happy medium.
Ashtuell Davis if if special teams is important, the Denver

(30:36):
Broncos are playing a game in Japan. He was going nowhere.
It was all set to get cut. Didn't even want
to suit up that night. Tried to call the airlines
to catch a flight home early, couldn't get one suits up.
He's on the sidelines. They put him into the third quarter.
He blew up a guy on special teams. The rest
is history. Ryan Clark will tell you the same story.
So give this a chance to work. Now, the standard

(30:58):
kicks are still going to begin from the thirty five,
but everything else looks radically different. Honestly, I knew this
was coming. And when I looked at the screen and say, whoa, whoa,
you got ten kick coverage players that are lining up
twenty five yards away at the opposing team's forty. You
have five on each side of the field. Then the

(31:18):
return team, they've got nine blockers lined up what's called
the setup zone between the thirty and thirty five yard line,
But at least seven of those players have to touch
the thirty five yard line, so you could have up
to two returners. They have to line up inside the twenty,
so before the ball is actually kicked, only the kicker

(31:40):
and the two returners are allowed to move around until
the ball hits the ground or is touched or caught
by returner inside the twenty. And as I said, any
kick that reaches the end zone in the air can
be returned or the receiving team can offer a touchback
and take possession at the thirty. The bottom line, let's

(32:04):
give this a chance to work. Coming up, guess who
turned forty seven today and he hasn't ruled out a comeback.
Do we think it's gonna happen? No? But can you
rule it out? No? I'm Bernie Fraddle. Where coming your
line from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio, Tirack dot com studios.
Keep it locked The Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (32:27):
You don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.

Speaker 2 (32:30):
All right back on the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
We are coming to you live from the tyrack dot
Com studios here in Las Vegas, just getting started. We've
got a massive show tonight. If we got some Olympic
stuff to get to in about thirteen minutes. Top of
the hour, Mark Medina Medina Magic every Saturday night, midnight
Pacific on The Bernie Fratto Show. Melt Tucker remember how

(32:55):
he was unceremoniously fired as Michigan State's football coach. US
last year major lawsuit on the horizon got a quick
upcap recap later of a couple of teams in the
Major League Baseball trade deadline updates that I think are
very significant. Don't forget. In the final hour, we've got

(33:16):
what kind of brand new fool you? Followed by what
my name? I'm going to take a quick look at
this Canadian soccer cheating scandal, preview a couple of NFL divisions.
By the way, my good buddy Andy Furman's going to
join us in the final segment of the show. I
don't know if you've got a chance to see the
Pete Rose documentary. It's terrific that I maybe learn anything, No,
but it brings you back down memory lane and reminds

(33:39):
us of the complex nature of Pete Rose, who's now
eighty three years young. But as we look to football,
and by the way, I'm going to get to it
a second. Yeah, I guess who turned forty seven today?
Well was August third when I signed down. It's still
August third here in Las Vegas at eleven forty eight pm.
He turned forty seven to I'm going to get to
that in a minute. Two other quick things. When the

(34:03):
Texans played the Bears Thursday night, the Bears were catching
two points, and if you like to bet preseason, for
what it's worth, history tells us that underdogs that close
plus two or shorter with the line that opened up
inside of three, as was the case between the Bears

(34:25):
and Texans, and the final score ended up being twenty
one to seventeen Bears. There are some books that paid
the bets, some didn't. The underdog that's getting two points
or less covers about sixty four percent of the time,
and that goes back to twenty twelve and then covered
by two point two points per game. Well, the Bears
did exactly that. They covered by four actually more than that,

(34:46):
for what it's worth. By the way, the Bears were
five to one against the spread under Matt Eberflus. He
likes to win preseason games. So just the thought, as
you see these short lines, more often than not, the
dog is the value. Something else fascinated as we look
end of the season this year and all the storylines,

(35:06):
not the least of which he's going to be Aaron
Rodgers in the New York Jets and that whole gosh
darn soap opera. Their first practice and pads went very
poorly on Monday, at least in the eyes of Aaron Rodgers.
He was not afraid to let his teammates know it.
He was visibly upset, and it might not have played
so well because people were not happy that he decided
to go to Egypt instead of Mini Camp and I

(35:28):
understand he bought the ticket and it was paid for
and he had it all planned. You know, when he
got three hundred million in the bank or whatever you've made,
I think you can maybe pay the change fees. Wasn't
a good look. I covered the Lions for ten years.
Mini camp's important. It's very important, and even preseasons important.
I hear people minimizing it. If you don't think preseason

(35:49):
is important, you haven't covered an NFL team. I realized
there's only about two roster spots that are open. But
let me tell you position coaches that like to track
the progress of their first, second, and third round draft
choices from year to year. You do that in live
bullets against an opponent with real referees and when they
keep it score as opposed to a scrimmage. The second
thing is coaches like to decide position battles a lot

(36:09):
of times in preseason during a live game. Just sharing,
by the way, one other thing will a lot of
talk about Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. I would listen.
I think Led Zeppel will re record the Gilligan Z
Island theme song and Cela million copies before Justin Fields
will start in front of Russell Wilson. It's not gonna happen.

(36:31):
We'll go into that later. You know, I like justin fields.
The problem is you can't read a defense. His recognition's poor.
He takes too long to get rid of the ball
and he's not accurate. And that's why he's ten and
thirty eight. Now you know he let's I do like
the guy, though he conducts himself like a pro. Here's
an interesting factoid. You can impress your friends around the
water cooler. Remarkably, if Russell Wilson starts Week two against

(36:56):
his former team, the Denver Broncos, Russell Wilson would be
playing against the team. He'll be the first player in
history to face an opponent or the opponent is paying
for eighty seven percent of his salary. Put that your
pipe and smoke it. So mark the calendar for week two.
The Steelers visit Denver, and Denver will be paying eighty
seven percent of his salary to compete against them. All right,

(37:21):
there's a mouthful. We're all excited. Football's here. Come on,
let's face it. Earlier this year, Tom Brady kicked the
door open, kept the door open, then shut the door
on possibly Okay. Again, the operative word here is possibly
for those who selectively listen returning to the NFL during

(37:44):
the twenty twenty four season. He has yet to completely
say no, not no, hell no, not up in here. No,
he hasn't said that. Tom Brady turned forty seven years
old today August third, believe it or not. If Brady
were to come back for any reason, and do I
think it's gonna happen, No, But would I make it

(38:04):
a zero. No. He'd be the third person to play
NFL football at age forty seven, but he'd be the
first quarterback to play at that age. Now, people I
talk do say if he had to, he still could.
His arm is still strong. It's going to be strong
till he's fifty. As far as mobility, yeah, you can
say Brady's lost mobility, but he never had any. I

(38:26):
covered him at Michigan. He didn't have any there, and
he was brilliant, brilliant even if he was behind Brian Greasy.
He would pick apart the first team defense that went
undefeated in nineteen ninety seven. But even then he had
the mobility of an upright vacuum cleaner. But the truth
of the matter is as his career went on, Brady
had perfected the yard of sensing a collapsing pocket. He

(38:46):
gets the ball out of his hands so quick before
he gets blown up. He frustrates teams every day, all day.
That's why he went to so many Super Bowls and
won so many. Now we all know Tom Brady will
start working for Fox this year. Got a plumb game
week on the Cowboys visit Cleveland and that coveted four
pm Eastern game that he always gets very high ratings. Okay,

(39:11):
but I believe Tom Brady will follow current quarterback play
closely because if he decides to come back, he'll be
more inclined to come back once he sees what current
players are doing and if he realizes he could do better.
Where would he fit well. Charlie Weiss once said that
if he were with a forty nine ers this year,
Brady would be a top five quarterback. I know the

(39:32):
Niners don't need him, but last year they were interested,
and I hope I'm rooting for Brock Purdy. But if
a quarterback goes down, will Brady's phone ring? It's going
to depend the backup and the situation and other options.
And it also hinges on the willingness of a team
to bring him in and let him play right away.
Is it possible? Yeah? Is it likely? I don't think so,

(39:52):
but it's fun to talk about and Brady hasn't shut
the door yet. Coming up, Mark Medina, Medina Magic. You're
listening to Theernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Keep
it locked.

Speaker 1 (40:03):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.

Speaker 2 (40:07):
That's right, you heard the man. Bernie Frattle Show keeps

(40:31):
The US on their way to the metal round. What
a shock. But every Saturday night at midnight, fifty two
weeks out of the year, there's always news. Three simple words,
It's that time. Medina Magic, our Fox Sports Radio NBA guru,

(40:51):
Mark Medina, Mark, how are you, Bernie?

Speaker 8 (40:55):
I'm doing well. Hey, I have a question for you.
HASUSA entertain need this past week with its basketball performances.

Speaker 2 (41:04):
Well, it has been boring, but it was very much expected.
When we signed off last week, I said they'd be three.
You know, I didn't predict they'd have a sixty one
point margin. But I've said all along, no one's beating
his team. They're too deep, they're two athletic. They have
the best running jump athletes in the world. Let's look ahead.
Because I also tongue in cheek a couple of weeks ago,
but it really wasn't tongue in cheek. I thought Steve

(41:26):
Kerb might deserve a raise, and he wanted to lock
down the number one seed. And as you can see
the remaining teams in the field, the US is going
to benefit from that. Shouldn't Steve Kerb be getting a
little bit more flowers than he's getting.

Speaker 8 (41:39):
Oh, it's out of doubt. But look, you know, I
think whether it's Steve Kerr or any of the players,
they're only going to be evaluated if they fail, not
if they succeed, because the expectations that they win what
would be their fifth consecutive gold medal. But I think
that yere onto something that that's not so simple. As well,
you have twelve Hall of fame on your roster. Anyone

(42:02):
can do it. I think, on one hand, yes, you
necessarily can't go wrong with any rotation, starting lineup and
lineup combination. So that's why I thought the early criticism
of Steve Kerr was a little much. But I think
at the same time, you have to manage personalities, you
have to find the right matchups, and I think that
he's been able to do that. He's been very flexible

(42:23):
with changing, you know, lineups depending on matchups and also
just trying to keep the team engaged. And we've seen
a much different product than what we saw in the exhibition,
where you know, there's a lot more continuity, a lot
more chemistry, and again talent prevails. But this team is
put up in a microwave and expected to be a

(42:44):
gourmet meal just because it has good ingredients, and that
doesn't always happen.

Speaker 2 (42:50):
Well, that's very true, and I do agree that they
certainly look much better now there's been better balls distribution
and as it were, I agree with that. So let's
look ahead to their opponent Tuesday, Brazil. They shot the
heck out of the ball against Japan, but come on,
they're led by a forty one year old point guard

(43:11):
and they.

Speaker 8 (43:11):
Have ale of it.

Speaker 2 (43:13):
Well, it's got to call it as I see it.
I just can't see the US losing to Brazil. You've
been pretty fair and objective about this, though. Give me
a scenario where Brazil upsets the US.

Speaker 8 (43:28):
Oh, let's see the scenario as we hear some news
about a tournament ending injury to Lebron James, Kevin Durant
and Steph Curry. I don't think that's gonna happen. So
there's no scenario that the US loses to Brazil.

Speaker 2 (43:43):
Well one, there's one actually, if the team contracts malaria then.

Speaker 8 (43:48):
Okay, so there's two unlikely scenarios, right. I think they're
gonna win Tuesday, regardless of whether it's you know, a
blowout win or a close wind beautiful ugly. I think,
you know, the questions moving forward is really in the
gold medal game, whether it's Germany or Canada. Can they

(44:10):
survive those two teams?

Speaker 2 (44:12):
They're really hold that fut before we get to that, Okay,
because let's take it a step at a time. Because
let's assume that the US advances past Brazil, they would
play the winner of Australia Serbia now they've already beaten
Serbia by twenty points twice this year. Okay, Australia is
a nice looking club. They're not beating Australia. I could

(44:35):
either one of those teams upset the US. Could you
see that scenario?

Speaker 8 (44:38):
No, Serbia only has Nikoleoka. Australia has a better chance
because they have more NBA talent. You look at players
like Josh Giddy and Dante Exam, Dythan Daniels. These are
legitimate rotation players, but again doesn't match up with players
like Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry and their amazing bench.
So yeah, it's really going to come down to cam

(45:00):
out of Germany, and I don't think. I don't think again,
barring serious injury, that that's going to happen. But I
think they can at least give them good tests where
it's competitive. There could be similar to what we saw
in twenty eight and twenty twelve with Spain against the US.
Legitimate team, a lot of good continuity, a lot of
good NBA talent, so make for a competitive matchup, but

(45:22):
the US will prevail well.

Speaker 2 (45:23):
Germany was second to the US in terms of point
differential at plus forty seven. And to your point, through
the other two undefeated teams in pool play, they're on
the other side of the bracket, which means the US
only has to be one of them to win the goal.
That's why I give kur Al out of credit. He
wanted a lockdown the number one seed and this is
how they benefit. So I think last week, and I'm
in agreement with you, you're frankly, you're expecting candidate to

(45:48):
advance to the final game. Is that fair?

Speaker 8 (45:50):
Yeah, I without a doubt because you go to Alexanderson
playing at an MVP level. RJ Barracks, I think has
really taken his to another level, being able to be
physical and aggressive. Dylan Brooks he's an efficient shooter and
a great defender at least in these games. And Lou
Dort is another physical defender. So I think those four

(46:11):
players have been so effective that even Jamal Murray not
playing as best, it hasn't really mattered.

Speaker 2 (46:17):
Yeah, and let's not forget Canada beat the US last year.
So if we fast forward to this and the game
will have been played by the time we get to
this segment next Saturday night, what is a potential scenario
where Canada could beat the US. I think that's these
two teams played ten times. The US beats him nine,
maybe nine and a half. But it could happen. Okay,

(46:38):
it could happen. I think it's the only team in
the tournament because what the Canada has, what eleven NBA
players may have good ones.

Speaker 8 (46:44):
Yeah, they have a perimeter orient in lineup. So the
scenario that Canada beats the US, so they get really
hot from three, I think because it's a perimeter orient
in lineup, I don't think Joelmbiat will play a lot
of minutes. I think Temiosi could go small, but I
think that even presuming they do that, if Canada catches
lighting in a bottle and just goes lights down from deep,

(47:05):
then it could be over. But again, the US has
a lot of continuity, and even with how dominant their
starting lineup is, their bench is even arguably greater because
they have Kevin Durant coming off the bench, even though
he's tmosa's all time lying score, but because of his injury,
they've decided it's better to manage his workload that way.
Anthony Edwards, as we saw against Puerto Rico, today, he's

(47:28):
been a really dynamic score. But then when you look
at the starting lineup, you know it starts with Lebron James.
But even Steph Curry not making shots, he's a great
four spacer, great playmaker. Devin Booker is all of a
sudden the defensive special. It's when Drew Holliday presumably comes back.
He's another two way player. And Anthony Davis has been
the Anthony Davis that we saw in the bubble when

(47:52):
the Lakers won the championships. So there's just a lot
of good pieces. I should also throw Bam out out
of Bio out there as far as what he's provided
as a mobile big man in the second unit. So
they just have a lot of unstoppable weapons across the board.

Speaker 2 (48:07):
One last thing about Steve Kerr. I hesitated to bring
this up, but I'm going to. Folks had raised an
eyebrow when Jason Tatum didn't play and then the situation
with Joel Embiid. But I think what Kerr has done
is makes sense to the fact that he's putting guys
in their usual roles as he sees the matchups evolved. Now,
most of the consternation was outside the Avery Tower tickets

(48:31):
inside the Averay Tower Mark. I can't imagine that we
were any disgruntled players. Was too much made of that.
I don't recall Jason Tatum say anything. I know Jalen
Brown won't shut up, but Jason Tatum seems to have
handled quite well.

Speaker 3 (48:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (48:44):
Well, Jason Tatum, he said it was a humbling experience.
I mean, he won a championship, he got, you know,
a max extension, he was on the cover of Sports
Illustrated cover on the NBA two K video game. I mean,
so it's not like he was thrilled with getting a
help for DMP, but he knows what he was signing
up for. It's the Olympics, and you know, it's not

(49:05):
like he's getting benched in favor of, you know, guys
that aren't at the same level as him. And even
though Derek White, who's on the Celtics and obviously isn't
in the same pecking order as Jason Tatum, I think
just illustrates that the US Olympic team is not an
all star team. It's about managing combinations. And I think
Steve Kerr said really well that it's not a matter

(49:26):
of putting the best five scores in your starting lineup,
because then they don't coexist. Well, it's about finding the
right chemistry pieces. So with all that said, I was
surprised that Jason Tatum came back in the starting lineup
only because it came at the expense of Drew Holliday.
But I think one it was a way to just

(49:47):
keep everyone engaged. And two, you know, they were cognizant
that South Sudan plays at a fast tempo and so
they wanted to react accordingly, most notably with having Anthony
Davis star instead of Joe Indeed, so I think the
fact that they made a change at the center spot,
it made a little easier for Steve Kerr to make

(50:07):
another spot change in the starting lineup with Jayson Tatum's
out Drew Holliday. But I think it's really about matchups
and then just trying to give guys a chance to
play because it is the Olympics and at that point
it was just group play. But I think moving forward,
you know, Drew Holidays expected to be back from his
ankle injury and he'll have that starring lineup spot for

(50:30):
a good moving forward.

Speaker 2 (50:31):
Talking with Mark Medina Medina Magic Our Fox, Sports Radio
NBA guru. You hear him every Saturday night. It had been
that Pacific time here on the Bernie Fradis Show, and
you are right. Jason Tatum said not playing was humbling,
but he also said he wouldn't hold a grudge. Yeah,
give it up to Drew Holiday, who's not complained about
being in out of the lineup. And let's also not
forget Kevin Durant, the all time leading scorer and rebound

(50:54):
on the history of men's Olympics, is not only coming
off the bench. He says he's fine coming off the bench.
So got to give credit where credit easy. Yeah.

Speaker 8 (51:02):
Yeah, And Bernie, I would add, he's just not saying
he's fine with it. He was praising Steve Kerr for
how he's managing the rotations. And I think that I
didn't have this in one bingo card that Kevin Durant
would be coming off the bench. I thought it was
a definitive that Lebron Steph and Durant were starting. But
it makes sense because he's coming off the injury. They
want to manage that workload. But I think it's also

(51:24):
about he's such an efficient score that gives them such
a unique weapon that's very unstoppable, and again he would
provide the same thing in the starting lineup. But because
they have Lebron James and Anthony Davis or Joel Embiid
handling a lot of scoring punch and Steph Curry presuming
his shooting slump goes away, they don't need that scoring

(51:45):
as much as they would with the second unit because
the second unit obviously doesn't have as much of scoring talent.

Speaker 2 (51:53):
Interesting story coming out of Los Angeles involving Kobe Bryant.
When the Staples Center did their renovation in twenty eighteen,
a maintenance worker decided to save Kobe Bryant's locker from demolition.
He kept it intact sold to a private collector. It
was auctioned off at Sofies the other day for two
point nine million dollars. Kobe's locker. Your thoughts on that story.

Speaker 8 (52:18):
Well, it's not surprising, I mean, anything involving Kobe Bryant
will have a lot of interest in the market because
of what he mentioned the Lakers. Obviously there's, you know,
the tragedy component to him not being here for the
last four years. So it's not surprising that his locker
would sell for that amount of money. I think what's

(52:40):
surprising is that it hasn't been kept and retained, but
you know, it is what it is, and at least
a portion of those sales proceeds are actually going to
help the Lakers Youth Foundation final thing.

Speaker 2 (52:53):
And I know you're a busy guy, but you get around.
There was a statue depicting Kobe Bryant and his daughter.
It was unveiled in a ceremony Friday outside of Crypto Arena.
I know you attended the ceremony back in February. Were
you able to attend that statue ceremony as well?

Speaker 8 (53:10):
It was a private ceremony, you know, per Vanessa's wishes.
That was much different than it was when the Lakers
unveiled Kobe's number eight jersey during last season in March.
But it's a beautiful statue. It shows, you know, Kobe
and Gianna. And the image of that was when he
was at a Lakers regular season game against the Dallas

(53:32):
Mavericks in late December of twenty nineteen. That was his
last public appearance at a Laker game before his trategy
less than a month later. And it was just really
surreal because I was at that game, and I remember
catching up with him because we were going to link
up for an interview about you know, just life after
basketball and what he was doing post NBA career with

(53:53):
all his different projects. So, you know, we had that interview.
But you know, all these different moments of his just
brings a lot of you know, obviously some some nostalgic feelings,
but also some wistful reminders of the tragedy four years ago.

Speaker 2 (54:09):
Mark, great stuff as always. Next Saturday night, the Olympics
will be a FATA complete. We'll see what the final is.
I'm gonna say USA beats Canada, not exactly going on
on a limit, and we'll look forward to hearing from
you as perhaps you are. You know, are there any
other deals lurking in the weeds between now and the
start of the season, And I want to get your
thoughts on this rookie class. There are some varying opinions,

(54:33):
including Alex Aar.

Speaker 8 (54:35):
Wows good, Well TVSA doesn't entertaining this week at least
next week's segment.

Speaker 2 (54:42):

(55:24):
deadline has come and gone, but there are two teams
that I know Major League Baseball would dearly love to
see in the World Series facing off each other against
each other. They haven't done it since nineteen eighty one.
One I believe made the best overall trade at the
deadline right at the buzzer. The other, well, at least

(55:45):
so far, seem to linked in their lineup and add
some speed and athleticism which they needed. We'll get to
that coming up. I'm Bernie Frattle. We are company live
from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio tirect dot com studios.
Keep it locked right here. You're listening to The Bernie
Fratter Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right back on
the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio Comedy Live from

(56:06):
the Tirak dot Com studios here in a Las Vegas.
Take it to three m Pacific, six am Eastern. The
trade deadline for Major League Baseball has come and gone.
You may have noticed Jack flaherity six excellent innings in
Oakland tonight in front a thirty five thousand fans. That's
like a good month for that stadium. Struck out seven,

(56:28):
walked one and was the type of dominant force that
the Dodgers are going to need down the stretch. The Dodgers,
I believe, ended up with the best overall trade of
the entire deadline, and it was right at the buzzer
when they managed to acquire Jack Flaherty from the Tigers
for really not a lot in return. I think the

(56:51):
Yankees got cold feet at the end because Flarity had
been on the injured list and there were some questions,
but the Dodgers took a chance. In so far after
one game, it's working out because Flarity he's been pitching
like he did back in twenty nineteen when he finished
fourth in the National League Sale Young Award voting. Now,
the Blue Jays ironically got more for Usa Kakuchi from

(57:16):
the Astros than the Tigers got for Flarity from the Dodgers. Well,
maybe the Tigers know something I don't know, but I
think Flarity could be he could turn out to be
the best starting pitcher traded at the deadline. And I
also think the Dodgers deserve some credit for landing another
power reliever in Michael Kopek. And they actually, you know,

(57:38):
did improve their roster depth. They got Tommy Edmund Ahmed Rosario.
They can both play multiple positions. Edmond can start at
second base, er in centerfield. He has thirteen home runs
and he's a base stealer. He hasn't played this year
because of injuries. But look, you hear Jason Stewart every day,
and I love Jason. I respect him very honest. Andrew

(58:01):
Friedman's done a great job in the regular season, but
when it comes to the postseason, they might be happier
with Kinky Friedman. God rest his soul. But here's the
bottom line. The Dodgers are poised to win this year
like they are every year, So there are genuine, genuine
expectations and I think it would be fabulous for baseball

(58:21):
to see the number two market against the number one market.
That would mean that the New York Yankees have to
find a way to limp across the finish line and
have success in October. Can they do it? I don't know.
I don't know. The Yankees they went into the trade
deadline needing to add depth in their lineup. It was

(58:43):
too top heavy. Not only that, they needed to add
some spark and excitement and speed and athleticism. They did
all those things. They got Jazz Chisholm. He's a power
hitter if he pulls the ball, which is a great
fit for Yankee Stadium with the short porch. Put him
in that clubhouse. He has a big personality. He's gonna

(59:04):
fit right in with Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, and
I think he's a professional. It's going to be an
influence in that locker. He's only twenty six years old. Well,
that's a good thing. Chisholm may be really starting into
his prime years. He could develop into an All Star
year after year after year. And give Aaron Boone credit

(59:26):
because he put Chisholm with third base, even though he'd
never played the position in the big leagues, but after
making a couple of seamless plays in his opening night,
it looks like that might even be the best spot
for Chisholm. He was a shortstop, so if you are
athletic enough and have the hands and the fluidity and

(59:47):
the habits to be a major league shortstop, you can
move to third base. He was a shortstop, so you
keep him on the left side of the infield. It's
not like he's a fish out of water, not by
a long shot. I know that the scouts regard him
as a below average defender at shortstop and even in
center field, but if you put him at third base

(01:00:10):
in a corner position like that, he could be seen
as a plus defender. And by the way, the Yankees
also bolstered their bullpen. They got Mark Letter Junior, who
hasn't allowed a hit or a run in his past
seven appearances, and he was traded so at the trade deadline.
I think you have to give your flowers to both

(01:00:32):
the Yankees and the Dodgers. But there's a long way
to go. But both teams made themselves better. Might that
lead to a postseason showdown of the likes we enjoyed
in nineteen eighty one during the strike shortened season, when
the Dodgers got their come up against the Yankees after
the Yankees had beatn the Dodgers twice in seventy seven

(01:00:54):
and seventy eight. Those were epic series. It would be
at epic series if it was New York in La.
Do I think it's gonna happen. I think it's got
less well less than a fifty percent chance. But you know,
nobody had the Arizona Diamondbacks in the World Series last year, eater,
so anything can happen. That's the beauty of baseball. You
learn to expect the unexpected.

Speaker 4 (01:01:15):
Hell.

Speaker 2 (01:01:16):
Bob Ucker once hit a home run off Sandy Koefax
coming up. A Big ten football coach who got out
of the gate quick by beating Michigan in back to
back years, which put him on the on the mount.
Rushmore of Michigan state coaches, is now suing his former employer.

(01:01:38):
We'll talk about that coming up. The first. Let's go
back to our guy, the Dulce Tones with the great
Dan Byer. Thanks Bernie.

Speaker 7 (01:01:45):
The Dodgers got back on the winning track on Saturday
night with a ten to nothing win against the Oakland
A's shohe Otani kind of stealing the show three stolen bases,
joins the thirty thirty club and Jack Flaherty six innings
of work, seven strikeouts, allowing just five hits and zero
earned runs in his Dodgers debut. Dodgers still four and

(01:02:06):
a half games up on the Padres. In the nl WES,
San Diego got past the Rockies three to two, Angels,
were five to four victors against the Mets Mariners rally
and get a six to five victory against the Phillies
that was in ten innings, and baseball's longest losing streak
continues now nineteen games for the White Sox. Twins beat
him on Saturday, six to two. Sunday action already underway

(01:02:30):
in Paris at the Olympic Games Men's golf final round
play already underway. The leaders will tee off at six
thirty nine Eastern time this morning. In the final group,
it'll be Spain's John Rahm, American Xander Schoffley who's at
fourteen under par with Ram and Tommy Fleetwood of Great
Britain at thirteen under. They will be in that final group.

(01:02:51):
Scotty Sheffler and Rory McElroy will enter the day four
shots back of the lead at ten under par. Currently
in a tie for sixth men's gold medal. Tennis match
has Novak Djokovic going up against Carlos Salkarez. US women's
basketball team in action today facing Germany. Little tip off
at eleven o'clock Eastern time this morning, and if you
love the medal count, US is way ahead of everyone else.

(01:03:13):
In fact, sixty one medals right now for the Americans
after a whopping eighteen on Saturday puts them twenty ahead
of France. The Americans, though still trail China in the
number of gold medals. China is sixteen, the US has fourteen.
But Crawford remains unbeaten forty one to zero. Won by
unanimous decision on Saturday. And I had to claim the

(01:03:34):
WBA Junior Middleweight title. And the Dolphins restructured the contract
of wide receiver Tyreek Hill that deals worth ninety million
dollars over the next three years, with Hill getting sixty
five million dollars guaranteed.

Speaker 2 (01:03:46):
Bernie back to you. How about those White Sox, Dan.

Speaker 7 (01:03:50):
Mans Our technical producer Mark Ramsey, a White Sox fan,
Mike Harmon. Of course Fox Sports Array, south Side Born
and Bred. It's a tough one, but hey, you got
the baseball draft to.

Speaker 2 (01:04:05):
Look forward to next year. Well, in the words of
Alfred Lutter of Bad News Bearers, Fame Rome wasn't built
in a day. In fact, that several hundred years. But
I digress. You know, Dan, as you know, I'm in
the car a lot between noon and one, and you
guys do a fabulous jobs. Doug Gottleiave's support crew, and
you brought up a great topic the other day. I

(01:04:26):
really wanted to weigh in. You talked about your least
favorite thing of football practice since teams are just in
camp mount. Yes, yes, yeah, we did that in game time.
I loved it, and I just I don't know if
this qualifies, but I will never forget this because we'd
always start about August tenth every year. Went to high
school in southern California, and the first day you wake

(01:04:48):
up after your first day in pads when you start
two days and we had water helmets back then, and
it looked like someone drew a line with a magic
mark across my forehead. And then it always took a
practices to get the straps under the shoulder pads right.
I had. You know, my arms were rubbed raw ag
arm pits. It hurt like hell, even if you wore

(01:05:10):
a T shirt. And then the stupid knee pads never
fit right. It took a few days, but that first day,
you know, you're hitting like crazy. Nutcracker drills the Oklahoma
Drill Bowl, in the ring. We did it all right.
And that first day when you wake up the next
day after your first day in pads, I'll never forget it.
Your thoughts, it's yeah, it is never fun.

Speaker 7 (01:05:30):
We did a draft on the Doug Gottlieb Show, drafting
the worst parts about football practice. We probably could have
done a four or five round draft. We just did
two of them. That is absolutely one. Just the mark
on your forehead for your helmet, and I assume it's
probably still like this today. I just feel that they
have better helmets. But coaches were always like, keep your

(01:05:53):
helmet on, keep your helmet on. And it hurt because
those helmets were just awful.

Speaker 2 (01:05:58):
Bernie.

Speaker 7 (01:05:59):
I probably still have a permanent mark on my forehead
for the helmets that I wore to high school.

Speaker 2 (01:06:04):
That was bad.

Speaker 7 (01:06:05):
My thing was coaches never letting me get water, right,
that was one back then and now obviously it's a
health concern, but yeah, you were not You were not
allowed to have water.

Speaker 2 (01:06:15):
Water was like a treat.

Speaker 7 (01:06:17):
It was just I've always said you had to love
football to play football. And that's why I admire all
these guys, especially the guys who play in D three
and then the smaller schools that aren't getting nil money,
aren't going on scholarship, but they love to play football.
Because there's nothing worse to me than practicing football. It

(01:06:38):
was the worst, Bernie. Yep, it was the worst I
to this day, honest to god. And I played my
last year in high school fotball in the mid seventies
and it was different than you know.

Speaker 2 (01:06:46):
The water deal and the way we hit, and they
taught you to tackle with your helmet back then. Thank god,
we're not all paralyzed. But I wake up sometimes in
the middle of the night thinking, oh wait, is there
life after practice? I wake up It's only a dream, right, Yeah,
I liked football, but I hated practice. Oh my god,
I hated practice. Suit was just drudgery. But well, you

(01:07:10):
did it, you know, you did it if you wanted
to date in high school and I still didn't date.
So there's that.

Speaker 7 (01:07:16):
I'm not sure about that. I'll leave you with this.
We're playing football in the upper Midwest. You would start
in early to mid August, you know, around this time, right,
and it would be sweltering and it would be humid.
But then two months later you're playing at night games
on a Friday where people are bringing out their winter
coats because rymon temper stuck. It is it is such
a quick turnaround in that football season. That first August

(01:07:39):
game is usually sweltering hot, and then your last game
in mid to late October, early November, you're out there
with your mittens and your hats.

Speaker 2 (01:07:47):
It's yeah, it's quite the well I could relate. My son,
you know, played high school football in Nova, Michigan, and
he was on a team that made it to the
state semi finals. They played a game on November seventh
against Adrian High School and that team put two guys
in the NFL, including Kellum Davis, who played tight end
for the Bears and Nova one. It was seventeen degrees
that night. Yeah, it's free, right, and in two months

(01:08:11):
earlier in August, you know, you're kicking off you the
left final weekend in August and it's seventy five or
eighty yep, yep. Good stuff is always Dan, you did
a great job with that game time stuff for you.
Very clever. All right. So, former Michigan State University head
coach Mel Tucker issuing the university, the leaders, the school leaders,
alleging that they wrongfully fired him last year and violated

(01:08:34):
his constitutional rights after he was accused of sexual harassment.
It's a federal lawsuit which is filed last Wednesday and
accuses the Michigan State School officials of taking quote an
improper sham investigation of allegations that Tucker sexually harassed and
exploited a rape survivor an activists I believe it employee

(01:08:55):
of the university by the name of Brenda Tracey. You know,
this is a story that was a story that was
raging last year and now it's kind of below the radar,
but it's very much out there, and if you live
in Michigan, we don't know the damages Mel was seeking.
But you recall he signed the ten year, ninety five
million dollar dealer. He's only in the third year of it. Okay,

(01:09:18):
But Mel Tucker is alleging, and they've got to have
their day in court at Michigan State officials, well, they
violated his rights to do process and equal protection, and
they believe he believes he did. You know, the school
violated his employment agreement. And the complaint also contends that
the interim president at Michigan State her name is Teresa Woodruff,
and their athletic director, their current athletic director, Alan Haller,

(01:09:42):
may quote false and defamatory public statements against Meltucker, quote
further destroying his reputation, his professional standing, and his livelihood. So,
as I said, at the time of the firing, Tucker
was in the third year of a ten year million
dollar contract due to earn about an additional eighty million

(01:10:04):
dollars remaining on the deal. And look, the university is
not commenting, which is obvious and the way till they're
formerly served. And part of the story is that this
Brenda Tracy, who was an individual who was advocating the

(01:10:26):
protection of college athletes about sexual violence. She had apparently
become friends with Meltucker over her advocacy work, and Michigan
State actually paid her ten thousand dollars to speak to
the football team about her story about actually being raped
gang raped back in nineteen ninety eight. So this is
a really story that's got a lot of layers. And

(01:10:48):
in the lawsuit it references the fact that Tracy did
speak to the Michigan State football team just a year ago,
or to check that three years ago, August fourteenth, twenty one.
The story goes on to advance in a way that
indicates that mel Tucker and Brenda Tracy's relationship took a turn.

(01:11:09):
In April twenty twenty two. According to the USA Today, Tucker,
I don't want to say the word on the air,
perhaps foddled himself during a phone call with her. Then
Tracy filed a complaint with the school in December twenty
twenty two, saying that Tucker had sexually harassed her during
the phone call. Several months later, Tracy filed a complaint

(01:11:32):
with the school's Office for Civil Rights and Title nine Education,
and Tucker told investigators that he and Tracy had had
con sexual consensual phone You get you get the gist, Okay,
as the story goes, And by the way, Michigan State,
which is a fine institution, they're no stranger to scandals.

(01:11:56):
Remember Larry Nasser, who's now serving decades in prison. He
was a Michigan State sports doctor and he had been
accused and he prosecuted and found guilty of assaulting many
female athletes, including gymnasts who actually went on to win
medals in the Olympics. So at the end of the day,

(01:12:19):
mel Tucker's lawsuit contends the school deprived him of his
right to a confidential and fair investigative process and that
they quote cared nothing about the damage being inflicted on him. Now,
one of the aspects of this story is that they allege,

(01:12:41):
and perhaps there's some truth to this, that Michigan State
has had a history of failing to properly deal with
sexual abuse allegations, and it's gotten a lot of media attention.
So again, this is less than a year ago. Tucker
was first suspended in September when this came out, and
the Michigan State fired him later in the month. And

(01:13:02):
the school's position is that Meltucker had subjected quote, they
had subjected the institution to ridicule, breaching its contract and
moral turpitude. Now there was a resolution officer that got involved,
he concluded later in October. Tucker also engaged in behavior
that violated the school's relationship and violence and sexual miscontent

(01:13:23):
policy and indicated that their findings believed allegedly that Tucker
had harassed and sexually exploited Tracy. So a very highly
charged situation. When melt Tucker was fired, he appealed and
in January he was denied, and so therefore we have

(01:13:47):
this lawsuit which we'll be going forward now. It's been
my observation on the outside looking in, when lawsuits of
this nature come to the forefront, they're typically well, they're
typically settled, and I get the feeling that's what's gonna
happen here. You have to ask yourself, if you're part

(01:14:09):
of the Michigan State regions, the attorneys are gonna get
rich here. Again, it's you know, lawsuits, as most folks know,
are time consuming and they're costly. So I think at
the end of the day, when Michigan State does their
calculus and perhaps they find a medium or happy ground
and not drag this thing out for years and move
forward with their new coach and some of the new

(01:14:31):
matchups they're going to have in the Big Ten, perhaps
they settle this. I don't know. I've not read the complaint.
I'm not that privy to some of the fine details,
and I don't know how much either side is dug in,
So this remains to be seen. What else remains to
be seen are the is the soap opera known as

(01:14:55):
the Aaron Rodgers New York Jets, et cetera, et ceter
et cetera. Where is that going? And I got to
tell you, I know that Aaron Rodgers was a little
in denial about his tet a tet with Garrett Wilson,
but I think it goes a little bit deeper than that.

(01:15:15):
Let's talk about it. Coming up, I'm Bernie Fraddle. We
are coming to life from the Las Vegas Fox Sports
Radio Tariact dot Com studios. Keep it locked. You're listening
to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. We're
back at the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming
to life from the tarat dot com studios here in
Las Vegas. Coming up top of the hour, It's time.

(01:15:35):
It's time to start to preview the NFL divisions. Tonight,
We'll start with the NFC East in the NFC North.
In the next four weeks, we'll take two divisions each
Saturday night, give you our thoughts. I'll make some bold predictions.
Some of you might not like what a different seventy
two hours makes. So now we are told that Saturday,

(01:15:56):
the New York Jets, who had a ninety minute scrimmage,
Aaron Rodgers, the forty year old Aaron Rodgers, eleven months
removed from surgery, looked like a Hall of famer, according
to Robert Salah. Okay, well, he should look like a
Hall of famer, because Aaron Rodgers is a Hall of Famer.

(01:16:18):
And they were very laudatory of Rogers command of the offense,
rogers demeanor, Roder the playmaking doesn't surprise me. But what
a dramatic turnaround from just a few days ago when
Rogers was losing his mind after the first practice and
pads it went very poorly. He was visibly upset, and

(01:16:40):
a lot of the frustrations seemingly stemmed from the fact
that there were several miscues from the offensive line, including
several sacks and poor snaps from their center, Joe Tipman,
who's only in his second year, so he got a
twenty year quarterback taking snap from a second year center.
Rogers was livid when one of the offensive Linemen even

(01:17:00):
stepped on his foot and Rogers went to the ground.
Can you imagine the collective panic that must have been
amongst the Jets staff and people observing that. And Alan
Lazard took up for Aaron Rodgers. He said, honestly, he
expects the same standard that holds himself to out of
everyone else, maybe like going to mindiicamp. Yeah, I think

(01:17:25):
here's the deal. You don't panic this soon. But if
you're the Jets and your history and what happened last
year and so much riding on this, this is a
taste of what you're gonna see out of the Jets
this year. One day crazy, the next day good. I
don't know how many games are gonna win. I think
the defense is solid, and I think if Aaron Rodgers
stays healthy and can start at least fifteen games, the

(01:17:48):
Jets are a playoff team. But it's all a big if. Okay,
last season was derilled by injury. Nobody wants to see
that happen again this year. Rogers does not want it
to happen. He's going to need solid play from his
offensive line. And let me tell you what this sod
Aaron Rodgers. That came out. Rogers was a very good
high school quarterback who always believed he need to do

(01:18:10):
three times as much to get half as much respect.
No Division one offers, goes to Butte Community College, does well,
ends up a cow, still got no respect, gets drafted,
goes to the Green Bay Packers, toils behind Brett Fahr
for years. As far I gave him the cold shoulder.
Rogers has a chip on his shoulder, and when things
don't go right, he emotes, and he likes to be
in control. When he's meglomaniacal. He is a Hall of Famer,

(01:18:32):
his legacy secure. There is so much pressure on the
Jets this season that when things go wrong, I think
you're going to see emotion, and when things go well,
you're going to see emotion. The highs and lows are
going to be a lot for Jets fans this year.
He saw a taste of it. Just this past week.
We're in one practice. Rogers lost his mind and Robert

(01:18:54):
Sala even talked about him playing in the preseason, which
Rogers said, that's news to me to looking like a
Hall of Famer on Saturday. Have fun, Jets, keep it locked.
The Bernie Fradle show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (01:19:09):

(01:19:37):
The NFL is here and the future always has a
way of arriving ahead of schedule. And just to you
know what, three weeks from Thursday, four weeks from Thursday,
the season will kickoff and we'll be back at it.
And I think one of the more watch divisions will
be the NFC East. Why because you got the drama
known as the Dallas Cowboys, the most watched team in

(01:20:01):
the NFL. More people watched Cowboys games last year than
any other team, including the Kansasity Chiefs. But they're not
going to win the division. Actually, the Philadelphia Eagles will
win the division and ten and seven is going to
do it. Yeah, they got their third set of coordinators
since the start of the twenty twenty two season when
they got to Super Bowl fifty seven. They lose Jason Kelcey,

(01:20:21):
a big loss. They lose Fletcher Cox, a big loss.
They bring in Saquon Barkley and a couple of other players,
including welcoming back their defensive back who spent some time
in Detroit, CJ. Gardner Johnson, and they had another strong
draft class thanks to Howie Roseman. Yes, they have turnover,
but this franchise and their culture seems to know how

(01:20:46):
to win now. They've only missed the playoffs once in
the last seven years. And there's an interesting factoid about
the NFC East. No team has successfully defended the division
crown since two thousand and four. Well that was Dallas
last year. So if it goes according to Hoyles, Dallas
won't win it this year. They'll be a new winner.

(01:21:08):
It's not gonna be the Commanders, it's not gonna be
the Giants. I believe it'll be the Eagles. Now. They
have a tough September slate. They got a couple tough
road games, but it's a marathon, not a sprint. When
you look up in December January, I think the Eagles
will go ten and seven and win the division, which
means the Cowboys will not. Now, I know Cowboys fans

(01:21:31):
and certainly Jerry Jones, if he's listening, and he probably is,
will disagree with my assessment. Right, I think not only
will the Cowboys have a difficult season, a very difficult season.
I think they could be under five hundred. I really
mean that they open up at Cleveland. It's gonna and
that's gonna be a landmine game. I think Cleveland's a

(01:21:55):
lot better than people realize. I don't know what Deshaun
Watson's gonna look like, but he's got a lot to proof.
But when you have this kind of uncertainty, Mike McCarthy,
final year of a contract, Dak Prescott, who will get
you twelve and five every year. But when the Cowboys
get to the playoffs, you know the drill. They look
like a drunk crossing an icy street. They do nothing.

(01:22:17):
They do nothing. And I don't disrespect Mike McCarthy, he's
a good players coach. But it all comes together in
the postseason. But you've got Mike McCarthy, Dak Prescott, and
arguably their best player, Seed Lamb. They're sort of in
this lame duck campaign on the heels of an offseason
when the Cowboys were actually depleted by free agency and

(01:22:40):
to survive well. They did bring in a coordinator, Mike
Zimmer to oversee what has in the past been a
pretty opportunistic defense, and Mike McCarthy has to prove that
his offense can do it not just during the regular season,
but also in the playoffs. And if you look at
the Cowboys schedule, I'm not going to do one of
those where you'd name the opponent from week to week

(01:23:02):
and try to guess who's gonna win. But after they're
by week seven, the Cowboys have a brutal four game stretch.
Take a look at it. Three of them were playoff teams.
I feel like the offseason distractions, combined with the fact
that there's uncertainty with key players and their head coach,
cannot be good for the culture. I think the Cowboys

(01:23:24):
go eight to nine. The Commanders, new front office, new coach,
Dan Quinn, Jayden Daniels. We all know that the success
rate at first round quarterbacks is not great, but there's
a good vibe amongst the organization. They're gonna compete. I
think they can win seven, maybe eight games like Dallas.
But let's face it, they're just trying to get on

(01:23:45):
the Commanders, just trying to get on a positive course.
They don't want to tread water anymore. I think they
hold struggle early, but when there are no expectations and
some of their younger players get experience, and look, dan
Quinn knows how to coach, all right, the schedule gets
a little easier and the arc of their roster will
combine with the experience factor and their schedule. I think

(01:24:07):
Washington will finish fairly strong. Still, they're probably a seven
to ten team. The New York Giants, you gotta be worried,
be very worried. I've sampled the hard knocks and you look,
he kind of takes you behind the curtain and Joe
Shane in his offseason thinking. And they now lose Saquon
Barley Barkley, but they're going to try to build a roster,

(01:24:30):
you know, and you've still got to pope Daniel Jones
comes back from his ACL and that's not automatic. Right.
They got a couple of hyped first round draft picks,
including a wide receiver by the name of Malik Neighbors.
Their offensive line should be improved, but they've got actually
the NFC easts most difficult schedule based on their opponents

(01:24:54):
and their twenty twenty three winning percentages. I hate to
say it, but this could be a year where the
Giants are look like a five win team. So I
like the Eagles to win the NFC. So let's look
to the NFC North, which is gonna be very interesting.
I'm not buying the Bears, and I think the Vikings
just had to endure too much to continue what they

(01:25:16):
had been doing, and I liked their coach a lot,
Kevin McConnell. I think the Packers and the Lions are
gonna bato it out now I'm still connected in Detroit.
I think you're gonna see a very good season out
of Alliance. That culture is for real, that roster is
for real. They're as hungry as they've ever been. They
came so close last year that playoff loss at San Francisco.

(01:25:39):
You saw what happen. So now I think Dan Campbell
and the team understands their role and how they're perceived
and how the outside expectations are gonna be different than
they have been in the past. Because look, I covered
the Lions and eight when they were zero sixteen and
I saw it, trust me, I saw it all. But

(01:26:04):
everything is different now. But it's still an organization that
hasn't won a championships in nineteen fifty seven. The key
is the rest of the division looks a little different.
So the pathway to a super Bowl is going to
require not only a strong start. Remember, the Lions got
to play two home games in the playoffs last year.
That helped. The road game in San Francisco was their

(01:26:25):
come uppance. They have an odd scheduling quirk between October
and November, over an eight week period, they only have
two home games. But they do have a young core,
and they've got a stud wide receiver crew, and maybe
this is the year Jamison Williams has his breakout. But
I think the Green Bay Packers made a dazzling statement

(01:26:46):
last year with Jordan Love, and from what I'm hearing,
it's not a fluke. It's not a fluke. The Packers
not only had the league's youngest roster in twenty twenty three,
they were on the verge of an appearance in the
NFC Championship Game. What they did when they win into
Dallas and kick them around. That was men against boys,
and you gotta get a lot of credit to Jordan Love.

(01:27:08):
Green Bay's got a lot of talent. They have seven
first rounders on that defense that really started to find
itself in the second half of the year experience. You
add Josh Jacobs, you add a safety, and Xavier McKinney.
The real situation here could even blossom further. They have
a new defensive coordinator by the name of Jeff Haffley

(01:27:30):
who's changing the scheme. Okay, he believes that that scheme
has underachieved. Given the fact they've had seven first round picks,
I think you might see aggressive Green Bay Packers defense.
It plays downhill. It's a coin flip who wins this division.
I think both teams make the playoffs, both Detroit and

(01:27:50):
Green Bay. But I'm not kidding. I think it's gonna
take twelve, maybe thirteen games to win that division because
I have the Lions on the Packers both winning lead
eleven and they could both win twelve. So it's gonna
take twelve or thirteen to win that division. I'm tired
of hearing this narrative that this number one overall pick,
Caleb Williams has entered a more favorable situation in the

(01:28:13):
common draft since nineteen sixty seven. Now, I know he
was the number one overall pick, but some people have
said as a first rounder, well, you know, just let's
not forget Dan Marino joined the Dolphins in nineteen eighty three,
the year after. Not only they've been to the Super Bowl,
but Don Chulu was their coach and the super Bowl
roster with not great expectations. So you got a Heisman

(01:28:34):
Trophy winner, he's got some weapons on offense. He's got
a defense that seemed to find its footing last year.
I forgot they did trade for defensive in Montese Sweat.
But the truth of the matter is, even though the
Bears won for their final six games in twenty twenty three,

(01:28:55):
there was no pressure on them all right, So can
Chicago sustain that moment them? It is written that the
Bears have the league's easiest schedule aside from NFC South teams.
So look, if Caleb Williams can manage to lead the
Bears to the playoffs, it'd be the fourth season in

(01:29:17):
a row a rookie quarterback has led his team to
a postseason if you count brock perty in twenty twenty two.
I don't think it's gonna happen. Finally, the Vikings. They
have talent, Justin Jefferson, maybe the best receiver in football.
They say goodbye to Kirk Cousins, they say hello to
Sam Darnold and JJ McCarthy. Look the Vikings. Five of

(01:29:42):
their first seven opponents were playoff teams last season. They
have to go to London, they have to play the
New York Jets in London. I think Kevin O'Connell gets
a mulligan this year. They're going to be competitive, but
I think they're a five or six win team. So
there you have it. I want to bring in the crew,
get their thoughts coming up. I want to get the
thoughts specifically on the Cowboys. Am I wrong? We all

(01:30:03):
know what's taking place this off season, and we all
know what they're looking at. Am I wrong? Let's see,

a football show every Sunday afternoon. You've got your finger

(01:31:30):
on the pulse like nobody. I made some broad based,
bold assertions about the Cowboys in their upcoming season. Your
thoughts on the general outlook of the Cowboys and where
your thoughts are?

Speaker 7 (01:31:44):
You know, Bernie, when you look at the entire NFC,
And that's where I think that we have to look,
because I think it Jerry Jones is looking at a
super Bowl, so why not take it from his perspective.
We've talked so much about the contracts of Dak and
him entering free agency, and Micah Parsons and what you're
gonna do with Ceedee Lamb and the all in conversation,

(01:32:08):
and none of that's been accomplished. And it's stuff that
whether I've talked about it, or you've talked about it,
or others have talked about it, it hasn't been accomplished.
And I am I would be concerned if I was
a Dallas Cowboy fan. I don't think Ceedee Lamb's situation
is of concern, and I don't think Dak's contract is
of concern.

Speaker 2 (01:32:28):
I'm concerned about their.

Speaker 7 (01:32:29):
Running game and this is a team that had a
running game stall last season, they had Tony Pollard be
their lead back and that didn't work out, and Pollard's
now with the Tennessee Titans. But you have Ezekiel Elliott
that you then brought back because you thought Pollard was
going to be the guy. And Zeke han't been the
main guy in the last couple of years with Dallas anyway.

(01:32:50):
But it just to me is you know, that's where
really Dallas made their their bread and butter. And I
do think that you have to have a running game
in the National Football League. So when I look at
them in then and I have questions about I don't
know if Royce Freeman is going to.

Speaker 2 (01:33:03):
Be the guy or who it's going to be for Dallas.

Speaker 7 (01:33:06):
I don't worry about dak, I don't worry about Ceedee Lamb,
I don't worry about any of that. I worry about
their running game and I don't think that they have one,
and I Detroit has one, San Francisco has one. Green
Bay invested in theirs this offseason and bringing in Josh
Jacobs and aj Dillon looks like he's back to being
the number two there, and if he bounce back, bounces back.

(01:33:27):
Green Bay is going to have a running game. We
know the Eagles invested in their running game by signing
Saquon Barkley. So you've got teams in that division. That's
what concerns me the most about the Dallas Cowboys. I
just don't know if they're going to be able to
run the football. And to me, that's how you end
up winning in the National Football League, and I just
I don't see it, and I just see better teams

(01:33:48):
of the NFC.

Speaker 2 (01:33:50):
All right, all points Stualley noted, and I don't disagree
with any of them. And Juxta pulls that Dan against
what I consider to be a fairly daunting schedule, hitting
into their Byewey, you start out at Cleveland, but you
got Baltimore on the docket, at Pittsburgh and the Lions,
and if for any reason, say the Cowboys, I'll say

(01:34:10):
three and four, I need them speculating here heading into that. Byewey,
My concern is the culture, the culture and how this
foundation of sam that Jerry Jones seems to be presiding
over might start to finally cave. I don't think they're
going twelve and five this year after three straight years.
How does the culture sustain dan if they don't meet
with success out of the gate.

Speaker 7 (01:34:32):
You know, it's funny because I don't think culture is
their biggest problem. I do think that there could be
a change with Dan Quinn no longer being there on
defense and Mike Zimmer running the defense. But for all
of the talk that we have about Mike McCarthy, I
mean that passing game did cook last season. I mean

(01:34:53):
it was it was cooking. And I don't know. I
don't have a feel for the Cowboys and how McCarthy
is felt in the locker room. But does the Jerry
Jones stuff start to trickle down if that's what you're
getting to, Yeah, I think that could be an issue,
and maybe it's things get tighter for McCarthy.

Speaker 2 (01:35:10):
I would hope that as team plays with them.

Speaker 7 (01:35:12):
But I just it's funny because Jerry Jones has set
up all of these things almost for his team to
fail in terms of the contracts that we've talked about,
in terms of Mike McCarthy's future, and Bill Belichick is
you know out there as a possibility. Yeah, it all
goes back to Jerry Jones. You have more of a
concern about culture than maybe I do. But you know,

(01:35:35):
they're three and four to start the season and they're
looking like a wild card team. They're going to be
a story and maybe that does creep into into Dallas.

Speaker 2 (01:35:43):
And to your point, to be fair, set the record straight,
Mike McCarthy is very popular as a players coach. They
like him and he's produced results and you saw him
in Green Bay. Okay, the issue here, and it's a
really delicate situation because they haven't paid Dak and you
certainly don't want to go back to the Drew Henson

(01:36:03):
you know days as it were. But what do you
do because Jerry desperately wants to win another you know,
super Bowl, and it just doesn't feel like when he
gets hot and it's hard to breathe in these high
leverage moments in the playoffs. That's where I think the
culture right, and it's not necessarily from McCarthy, but some

(01:36:24):
sort of systemic issue.

Speaker 7 (01:36:26):
It's funny because I'll have a show later on today
with Carrie Rhodes New Eastern nine Pacific coming up, and
as I'm doing some of my notes here for the show,
we're going to be doing and what seems like a
few hours, Bernie, I don't mind saying it now because
I'm going to say a little bit later. I don't
necessarily understand what is happening with Dak Prescott's situation because

(01:36:51):
if it truly is our make or break season again,
this is a guy who broke his leg on national
television that we all saw in a game against the
Giants and what was a contract year and the Cowboys
paid him. So what does Dak have to do to fail?
So so when you look at what is going to
be the barometer, as you said, you don't want to

(01:37:12):
go back to the to the Drew Henson, Quincy Carter.
You know, was it Chad Hutchinson days? What I mean
it was it was crazy the quarterback carousel. Drew Bledzell
was a quarterback for all. I mean it was. It
was nuts for who was playing. Yeah, not to confused
with yeah, all the quarterbacks that you had, like you

(01:37:34):
at least you had some you know, stability with Romo
and then and now with Dak coming in. But what
is what does Dak have to do to fail to
not resign him because you already paid him when he
broke his leg and said all right, he's going to
be our guy. So now all that you've done I

(01:37:54):
think is basically just put off giving him a contract
that I don't think Dak would take a penny less
since the team is now playing chicken with him right now.
It really just doesn't make a lot of sense. And
it's not a fact of are you committing to Dak
or you not committing to Dak, because obviously they aren't
committing to him. But what does he have to do

(01:38:15):
in a negative way that would make you say, all right,
we're not going to bring you back. This isn't going
to work because the worst case scenario already happened once
in his career with a broken leg and he got
a contract.

Speaker 2 (01:38:28):
Then is that going to be the scenario again? Would
that be a spot?

Speaker 7 (01:38:33):
Well if that if that's the case, then you know
that's the case, and then Dak will go and sign
for fifty million dollars somewhere else. But I just I
don't I think that Jerry set this up in such
an awful way that they're just going to end up
paying more for a quarterback they probably could have just
signed and kept for the next five years at a
cheaper rate.

Speaker 2 (01:38:51):
This year as has been his most suparende E and
your thoughts on the Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 9 (01:38:56):
Yeah, I'm worried about the offensive line. That's something that
I I that you guys haven't touched on yet. It's
I don't know. To me, when you're downgrading from from
a Hall of Fame caliber tackle and Tyron Smith to
a back end of the first round rookie and Tyler Geitton,
who was seen as a project to begin with, that's
your left tackle spot. That's that's protecting Dak's blindside. And

(01:39:20):
when this is, you know, supposed to be a contract
year for him, that's I don't know. It just kind
of feeds into Dan's point. It's like, what what does
a bad season look like for Dak and what does
he need to do to fail and not get that
contract because the way that they're setting him up, it's
it's not like he's in the most flawless situation, you
know what I mean?

Speaker 2 (01:39:40):
Good points, both guys, Mark Ramsey, you want to wrap
it up on this.

Speaker 10 (01:39:43):
To the Cowboys, it just seems like, I mean, just
I know, they won eleven games twelve twelve years in
a row, so they.

Speaker 9 (01:39:51):
Won twelve games.

Speaker 10 (01:39:53):
Does Jerry's mind games trickle down to the players.

Speaker 9 (01:39:59):
You know, no, what's going to happen. Wasn't it their
defense that failed in the playoff game?

Speaker 2 (01:40:06):
Well, Green Bay moved the ball up and down the field,
but Dallas's offense, yeah that was yeah, go ahead.

Speaker 10 (01:40:11):
So they weren't able to score. I guess in a
in a tremendous game, but a playoff had no CounterPunch,
so they had nothing. So where they how could they
win twelve games and then the whole team be tight
and not be able to perform?

Speaker 9 (01:40:25):
So where they still? Is?

Speaker 10 (01:40:27):
This season going to be another season where they have
to worry about what Jerry Jones is going to do,
the obvious pressure that he wants for his team to
win and to get things done, and to you know,
go round and around about whether the dack is going
to be there, whether the deck is going to get paid, and.

Speaker 2 (01:40:43):
How about the head coach they're leaving Mike McCarthy dangling, right,
This is very unusual, very unusual.

Speaker 10 (01:40:49):
To all those things spinning around for the teammates and
just you know how not so much culture, but just
what the players have to deal with. They have to
deal with their owner, who may be talking a lot again,
So it's a lot of stuff that they have to
deal with just to play the game and to try
to get past a certain point if they get to
the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (01:41:06):
Again, maybe culture is not the proper choice of words
for me, but there I do believe it's already immerged.
There is a negative air around the team, and you know,
when things go wrong, what is their you know, what
is their pillar? And so you know, you got all
the things we just mentioned. So it's gonna make for

(01:41:28):
an interesting twenty twenty four season. I'm kind of sticking
to my guns. I think the Cowboys are eight, nine
to nine and eight. We'll see if I'm wrong. We'll
see if I'm wrong, but I know we'll all be watching.
Tell you what else, we're watching the Canadians women soccer team. Yes,
they actually advance to the quarterfinals of the Summer Olympic Games.
That doesn't begin to tell the story of the Canadians
women's soccer team. First, let's go back to our guy

(01:41:53):
Dan Byer with the latest Bernie.

Speaker 7 (01:41:56):
We are looking ahead to what's happening in Paris, and
there's stuff that's already happening right now. The final rand
of the men's golf event is underway. Leaders aren't going
to be teeing off for a little while. It'll be
John ramin Zander Schaffley in that final group at fourteen
under par. Ram representing Spain. Shawfley trying to go for
back to back gold medals as he represents the United

(01:42:17):
States in Great Britain's Tommy Fleetwood will be playing in
the same group as they are. Fleetwood is one shot
back currently at thirteen under par, getting ready for that
gold medal match. In tennis as well, Novak Djokovic of
Serbia taking on Spain's Carlos Alcarez. Today, US women's soops
team is in action at eleven o'clock Eastern time, facing Germany. US,
by the way, leads the medal count with sixty one medals.

(01:42:39):
The Americans have fourteen golds so far, that second best
behind only China. As for the Americans overall lead with
those sixty one, France is in second place. They've got
forty one total medals. We were talking football. The Dolphins
did restructure the contract of wide receiver Tyreek Hill on Saturday.
Bud Crawford a winner by unanimous decision to claim the
WBA your middleweight to title now forty one to zero,

(01:43:02):
a world champion and his fourth different weight class. A
possible about with Canalo coming up next. Class of twenty
twenty six five star quarterback fights in Brandon and verbally committed.
The Tennessee chose the balls over the likes of Alabama,
LSU and NC State. And in baseball, on Saturday night,
Jack Flaherty made his Dodgers debut, going six innings, striking
out seven. LA won in Oakland ten nothing. Padres got

(01:43:25):
past the Rockies three to two. LA's lead on San
Diego and the NL West remains at four and a
half games. Mets they fell to the Angels five to four,
while the Mariners rally and pick up a six to
five win against the Phillies in ten Bernie, back to.

Speaker 2 (01:43:38):
You, Dan number one, Thanks for jumping in tonight, Bud.
It's always a pleasure to have you. And before I
let you run, I gotta have you. Weigh in ever
so quickly on the Canadian women's soccer team. Should they
get to the gold medal game and win it, what
a story this is going to be, especially after that
penalty that it was levied.

Speaker 7 (01:43:55):
On them by the federation. That would be quite a story.
And whether there's a week of stories in the Olympic Games.
You are way more into the women's soccer stuff that
I am, Bernie. I know they're scandal I know they're spying,
but I'll leave that down in your alley, all right,
I'll focus on golf.

Speaker 2 (01:44:14):
Very good, all right, very good, Dan, You take care
of pal. Thanks, Bernie, have a good show. Dani'll hear
Dan later on these airwaves in a little over seven hours.
All right. So the Canadian women did advance, but not
without a backstory that you really kind of can't ignore.
By the way, they are the defending Olympic gold medal champion.

(01:44:36):
They wanted the Tokyo Games in twenty twenty one. They're
doing it without their coach. I believe the coach's name
is Beverly Priestsman. There was a report recently that an
analyst for the Canadian team was arrested in France last
month after he was found flying a drone over a
training session of the New Zealand soccer team. I don't

(01:45:01):
know if the spine on the set pieces or how
they comb their hair, but regardless, as punishment for this,
they got caught FIFA. They assessed a six point penalty
on the women's team during their Olympic run. Now that's
a major setback, Okay, that is not a small penalty.
That meant Canada we need to win all three group

(01:45:24):
stage games to advance, and they did it. They wrapped
it up by beating Columbia one nothing on Wednesday, so
they will next face Germany in the Olympic quarterfinals. And
one of the things I think that's been reported this
isn't necessarily reflection on the players. I don't know if
they're even aware of it. I don't know. There's so

(01:45:46):
much I don't know. But I get such a kick
out of these side stories, as you know, and we
always have to have to draw on history. But apparently
just the other day there were emails released by FIFA
that were included as part of a formal dismissal of
the team's coach and a fine of like two hundred
and fifty thousand dollars. They found these emails that apparently

(01:46:08):
seemed to underscore that the coach was supportive of these
maneuvers in spine. But as you know, these are openings
for me to have fun because this isn't exactly the
first cheating scandal. His Some knucklehads like to say, if
you ain't cheating, you ain't trying. Let's go back to
three eighty eight BC. Yes, even in the days of

(01:46:30):
Plato there was evidence of cheating. There was an article
many years ago entitled crime and Punishment in Greek Athletics,
put forth by a professor at Ohio State, and he dealed,
He tried that to get an English He detailed some
of the athletics scandals all the way back in ancient Grace. Yes,

(01:46:53):
during the Olympics of three eight BC, there was a
boxing bribery in the Olympics where a gentleman by the
name of Uphylus offessily bribed all three of his opponents
to let him win. And that prompted came organizers to
impose heavy fines on all four men. And can you,

(01:47:16):
oh my god, oh too much. Let's fast forward to
modern times, like back in four nineteen oh four. You
see the summer Games in Saint Louis in nineteen oh
four featured the marathon. And they say this get scandal
might have been the most bizarre in Olympic history. It's
certainly a spectacle a gentleman by the name of Fred

(01:47:40):
Laws who won the marathon Rosie Ruiz of nineteen eighty
Boston Marathon fame as a piker compared to this guy,
all right, So back in nineteen oh four Fred Laws
he won, but it was found afterward that he spent
eleven miles riding a long in a car, and he

(01:48:01):
was called out on it and admitted to cheating before
he could be awarded a medal. So maybe there's some
honor there. But the truth of the matter is it
was one of these weird races. One runner allegedly got
off course and cheated as well, because he claimed he
was he was chased by a pack of wild dogs.
One other runner somehow stopped off at an orchard to

(01:48:25):
eat some apples, got a stomach ache and took a nap.
Somehow I finished fourth. One other runner who finished third
was carried by his trainers over the finish line. That
must have been a real hoot. Okay, who could forget
the nineteen nineteen Black Sox scandal. That's you know, there
have been movies made about that, and I mean, damn
good ones. Eight men out with John Cusack to this

(01:48:46):
day still holds up them. Excuse me. The big bombsheale
though of the nineteen nineteen Black Sox scandal was and
involved professional baseball, which was sacred, and it was the
most flagrant. Obviously there were multiple members. You know the story.
They accepted money from professional gamblers to basically throw the

(01:49:08):
World Series. They were mad at their owner and Eddie Seacott,
who was promised a bonus of X amount of dollars
if you won thirty games, won twenty nine. And you
know their owner, I mean, his name escapes me. Now
I should know this off the top of my head.
But that's a famous story. Everybody knows. Then you get
into more. I say this in air quotes recent times

(01:49:31):
in nineteen nineteen, or checked that nineteen fifty one the
City College of New York. This involved basketball, a group
of college basketball players. It took money from bookmakers for
manipulating the scores of games. Thirty two players from seven
colleges were involved, admitted to accepting bribes. This one got
a little serious. Two of the players, including fixers, went

(01:49:55):
to serve jail time. Coming up. I got a few more.
I'm not done, more recent ones. You might remember him.
Keep it locked you're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show
on Fox Sports Radio. Hi, right back on the Bernie
Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio. We are coming to you
live from the tyrac dot Com studios here in Las Vegas.

(01:50:17):
Coming up in fourteen minutes, the dance sensation sweeping the nation?
What kind of brand new fool you? Followed by what
my name? I want to give credit to Mike Walter.
Let me just say this. I want to read his
tweet if I can find it. But the bottom line is,
you know, I have no high school dropout. I did
go the full six years. However, every now and then

(01:50:41):
I make a mistake, and I see, I knew how
I missed this hardwhift on this. I know that the
US women's team was playing Germany next well, in order
for Germany to advance, they would have had to beat
in Canada Saturday, which they did, so Canada is out.
Thanks to Mike Walter for tweeting and reminding me of that.

(01:51:02):
I knew it, but forgot it with time, all right,
And so I know, I think the game went to overtime,
went to extra time, and there was a shootout and
Germany ends up advancing, and so that'll be the United
States next opponent. Regardless. You question at this point how
much of a news story this will be, given that

(01:51:23):
it is the Olympics and one of the most popular
Olympics of all time, now will arise to the level
of a couple of big ones. I'm about to give
you to wrap this up. Ian Roddy, do you have
any thoughts on this whatsoever?

Speaker 9 (01:51:39):
Yeah, it's I don't know. For the the punishment they gave,
I feel like it should have just been to just
kick them out.

Speaker 2 (01:51:48):
WHOA, That's interesting because remember we don't know if the
players were culpable. This might have been a coaching you know,
you see what I'm saying.

Speaker 9 (01:51:56):
I do.

Speaker 2 (01:51:57):
But you get innocent, vite, you get a lot of
go ahead do But to.

Speaker 9 (01:52:01):
Me, this is such an egregious what's the word infraction?

Speaker 2 (01:52:09):
Fraction?

Speaker 9 (01:52:09):
Yeah, yeah, it's such an egregious infraction that to me,
it's not very important like who was involved, who wasn't.
It's the fact of the matter is that cheating was
involved with Team Canada. So to me, it's it's literally
just black and white. Cheating was involved with Team Canada.
They aren't allowed to compete in this Year's Olympics, it.

Speaker 2 (01:52:30):
Just feels like, okay, you're not wrong, but a lot
of collateral damage. I get to read Mike Walters because
Canada women's soccer got knocked out Saturday by Germany. Yes,
I I had to know that because I know the
US womens Se was gonna play Germany the next khad
and finish your point.

Speaker 9 (01:52:46):
No, I mean that's pretty much it. I just feel
like the punishment they gave them, you know, the six
point penalty that was supposed to be insurmountable and stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:52:54):
It's just well, they're going to win the goal, right exactly,
So maybe maybe you know the old Rashid wallas Baal,
don't Mark Ramsey your thoughts.

Speaker 9 (01:53:03):
So this is the team that had drones spying on
other teams.

Speaker 2 (01:53:07):
Well they were spined on New Zealand that was their
first opponent. But yes, that's the long and the short
of it.

Speaker 10 (01:53:13):
So, like like Ian just said, if there's cheating, and
if they were able to advance even though they got
you know, I guess demerits they should have been knocked
out of it because cheating is cheating and why should
you why should a cheater be allowed to continue in play.

Speaker 2 (01:53:36):
It's a question I can't answer.

Speaker 9 (01:53:38):
I I mean, if you break, you break that are
in place.

Speaker 2 (01:53:44):
The coaches broke the rules, or or at least two
of them did that, they part of the remaining staff remained,
so maybe they weren't culpable. I don't know. Just had
the situation last year with Michigan football with Connor Stallions,
and there's a Netflix special coming out on that in
two weeks, So you're not wrong on your premise. It's
just that there'd be so much collateral damage with these

(01:54:06):
young ladies have been you know, good.

Speaker 9 (01:54:08):
But that's the thing though, is like with the Michigan
thing that was that's a great callback till last year.
Just with that Michigan thing, even if the players themselves
weren't necessarily involved with the cheating, it's still the program.
Michigan cheated, so they should be punished.

Speaker 2 (01:54:22):
It doesn't matter that they're punished somewhat. And I have
all the details which I want bore of everybody with,
but they're not going to have their championship vacated.

Speaker 9 (01:54:31):
Well no, but I but that's the only reason that
I bring it up is just to compare it to
the Canadian thing here it's the fact that, yes, the
players might not have been involved, but the fact of
the matter is that the team that they play for cheated,
so the team that they play for should be eliminated
fair enough.

Speaker 2 (01:54:46):
Well, listen, there are three doozies that I haven't even
gotten to yet. Who can forget? That's been thirty years
for Krann out loud. It happened in Detroit. Shane stant
who became a household name, attacked Nancy Kerrigan woul the
baton at outside of Coble Hall. I was there the
next day I saw the broken door. My buddy Mark
Wilson covered it on TV. Nancy Kerrigan went on to

(01:55:09):
compete against Tanya Harding. That also became a movie, A
great movie it. Tanya very well acted with Margot Robi.
I can't recommend it highly enough. Who can forget? The
flate Gate somewhat similar to this Canadian soccer cheating scandal, right,
it's a weird one. The accusation was Tom Brady, when

(01:55:33):
he was with the Patriots, asked team equipment staffers to
deliberately under inflate footballs in the AFC Championship game against
the Colts. The Patriots won Brady was suspended four games.
He went on to win the Zooer Bowl that year,
peeled the suspension all the way to the US Appeals Court.
NFL had a two hundred and forty three page investigative
report as to what happened, and you know it now

(01:55:56):
was mentioned along the same lines as Spygate and Bountygate
and probably go down as the most memorable cheating incident
in recent NFL history, given the fact that it involved
Tom Brady. Now, Ian, are you a Dodgers fan?

Speaker 11 (01:56:09):
I'm not.

Speaker 2 (01:56:10):
Okay, Well, you know it's a good thing. Maybe I
don't have Bull or Ryan on the show tonight because
I haven't even gotten to the twenty nineteen Houston Astro
scandal rates. I know that sign stealing has always been
a part of baseball and it's not against the rules,
but it is against the rules when you use technology.
The Astros took it to a whole new level. They

(01:56:31):
began using a camera in center field to zoom in
when opposing catcher's signs were being flashed with the pitcher,
and the second part of the scheme was a little
less sophisticated, when they would bang a trash can that
player at bat knew that a breaking ball was coming
if you didn't bang the trash, can you knew a
fastball was coming? That cash to Paul Over the twenty

(01:56:52):
seventeen World Series led to multiple suspensions, firings, fines. Years later,
PitchCom came out, which made it pretty hard for you
to do that now. But I know a lot of
Dodger fans who believe the actors never really got their
come uppets ever and one final one. This kind of

(01:57:13):
spans a decade. It's a baseball steroid era, all right,
we know that. Look, these are the players that were implicated,
Mark McGuire, Rafael Palmearrow, Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds. Major League
Baseball they overhauled its strug testing policies and during the
peak of the home run era nineteen ninety eight, course

(01:57:34):
McGuire and Sosa associated there were sixty home runs three times,
three different times, the Mitchell Report, Barry Bonds trial for perjury.
There are a lot of open ended issues, but everybody
winked coming out of the strike of nineteen nineteen ninety four,
which canceled the World Series. The home run chase put
butts back in seats and everybody loved it, and everybody

(01:57:57):
winked and looked the other way, probably including me, because
we were witnessing history. So there you have it, Canadians,
You're not the only one, but you're not gonna win
a gold medal. Coming up? What kind of brand new
fool you followed by? What my name? Keep it locked?
You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (01:58:18):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (01:58:21):
Yep, that's right, you heard the man. The Bernie Fratterle
Show keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Frattle.
We all coming to you live from the tirec dot
com studios here in Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio. Tyrac
dot com will help you get there an not a
match selection, fast free shipping for your road, answer protection,
and over ten thousand recommended installers tyreq dot com the

(01:58:43):
way tire of buying should be. Well, we've come to
that juncture in the show. You know you love it.
You can't live without it, the dance sensation sweep of
the nation. See because as you'll give. Barry once said,
you can observe a lot by watching. That's exactly what
we do. Because in this great land of are from
seed to oily sea and even around the planet. Will

(01:59:03):
people engage in activities that aren't real bright now? Oftentimes, well,
those activities are just silly and nefarious and not particularly serious.
Other times they are far more daunting. They can end
you up in jail. They can make you end up
in jail, usual for me to say, or worse. But

(01:59:25):
no matter what the activity, no matter what the engagement,
every time we observe these situations, we find ourselves scratching
our head and asking what kind of brand new fool
are you? So?

Speaker 1 (01:59:44):
What kind of brand new fool are you?

Speaker 2 (01:59:47):
Let's go? Man, now pumped? I'm pumped. This one is
an all timer in terms of what really kind of
brand new fool of you? Now, I can never in
good conscience suggest to anybody that you should steal anything,
rob anything, take something is not yours. But we take
you to Tulsa, Oklahoma, which I believe is a first.

(02:00:11):
And a suspect was arrested, and I'm going to get
to this story. It was not Dwight man Freddie of
the Tulsa King Fame, which is a great series on Netflix. Man,
it's a beauty. I wish it had come out with
season two. But I digress. That's the Vester stallone. According
to the Tulsa Police Department, officers were called out last

(02:00:34):
Wednesday to a street seventh Street or thereabouts, as if
I know, because there is apparently an armed robbery in progress.
Now here's where it DIDs wacky wacky, Yes, well the
business they were called to. I mean, was it a bank, no?

(02:00:55):
Was it a grocery store no? Was it a jewelry
store No? It was the Golden Beauty Supply Store in
their seventh in Sheridan. Yes, an armed robbery in progress.
Ladies and gentlemen, we introduce you to David Neuby and
his picture online is not to be believed. Oh my god,

(02:01:15):
I don't want to say anything on the line, and
I almost just did. But when officers arrived at the
beauty supply store, they looked at the suspect and they
couldn't believe exactly what he had been holding up and
robbing this Golden Beauty Supply store for. What was he

(02:01:37):
there for? Of course, it was a ponytail hair extension
and he was carrying a knife used in the robbery.
And when police arrived, mister Newby was already wearing his
newfound prize having stolen a ponytail hair extension at the

(02:01:59):
Golden Beauty Supply store near Seventh and Sheridan holding an
employee at knife point, which became armed robbery. I tell
you what I think. I just threw up on my mouth.
This is one of the all time weird ones. And
some of the comments on Twitter were even better. On

(02:02:20):
the website that that report of this said, you know this,
this state must have a pitiful mental health sism. People
like him usually get passed around from jail to jail,
never get any real help. Well, I don't know what's
going to help this dude, because if you're going to
rob somebody, which is a bad idea in the first place,
but you're gonna rob a Golden Beauty supply store at

(02:02:40):
knife point to get a ponytail hair extension and then
be wearing it when the cops arrived. Yeah, all I
can say is, mister Nuby, what kind of brand new
fool are you? And then, speaking of a brand new fool,
I guess he's a newbie. Right. Oh boy, see what
I did there? All right, let's pass the but on
to our guy Iyadi.

Speaker 9 (02:03:02):
Okay, Well, h so for us this week's fool. The
story begins in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

Speaker 2 (02:03:09):
Oh, finally back in Florida. Yeah, after job Ian.

Speaker 9 (02:03:14):
Had to bring us back to Florida. It's been too long,
so we're taking us back down there. And in Saint
Petersburg police received reports of a possible vandalism in progress.
So the callers said that they'd seen a man spray
painting a building downtown. Uh So, officers obviously went out
to the scene, and when they arrived, they searched the

(02:03:36):
area and eventually found a man matching the description that
the witnesses had given, and he was carrying a bag
that was filled with spray paint can spray paint cans,
so it was, you know, pretty damning evidence that this
was the guy. Officers asked him to identify himself so
they could figure out what his name was, and he
refused to answer, but that was until he was placed

(02:03:57):
under arrest. After they put him in the back of
the patrol car, the man told cops his name was
mister Monopoly and that is and that his birthday was
four twenty sixty nine. Just just comedic genius, this guy.
But the joke was on him, as the cops found
his driver's license right after he said that, which identified

(02:04:18):
him as thirty three year old Ryan Howard. So not
not only was Howard taken straight to jail without passing
going collecting two hundred dollars mister Monopoly joke haha, but
he's now facing several charges done, thank you?

Speaker 2 (02:04:33):
Did he pass border walk in park place?

Speaker 9 (02:04:35):
No? Nope, okay, none of it went straight to jail,
mister Monopoly. He's now facing several charges, including an extra
one for providing a false name. So the joke really
was on him and Ryan Howard, or should I call
you mister Monopoly? What kind of brand new fool are you?

Speaker 2 (02:04:49):
That's a good one, Ian not a moving parts there. Now,
just to be clear, we are a sports talk show.
This is not the Ryan Howard who played for the
Philadelphia Phillies. Correct.

Speaker 9 (02:04:58):
That is correct, at least, don't I think so?

Speaker 2 (02:05:00):
No, Well, I'm gonna I'm gonna go out on a limit.
Assume it's not. And the only reason I asked set up.
You guys know the old Bob Yucker joke, right he goes?
You know I used to one night I got pulled
over three in the morning by the Philadelphia Police, and
I was fined three hundred dollars, one hundred dollars for
speeding and two hundred for being with the Phillies. That's

(02:05:21):
when they were That's when they were bad, true Bob
Yucker story. All right, good job being excellent, and I'm
so glad we were able to revisit the great state
of Florida. We missed you, Florida the last four weeks
in our series of What kind of Brand New Fool Year,
which now allows us to segue into our second favorite

(02:05:41):
bit that we lovingly refer to as what my name? Hey?
Here we go? All right, You saw where Shoheo Tani
had reached the thirty thirty club after what one hundred
and six games? Well, I once reached the thirty third
club after just ninety games, the fastest ever in baseball

(02:06:03):
history to do it. Ian Roddy, what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:06:05):
Could it be? Aaron Judge?

Speaker 2 (02:06:07):
You were close? Not Aaron Judge. Thirty thirty club after
just ninety games, the fastest to ever do it? Mark Ramsey,
What my name?

Speaker 10 (02:06:19):
There was a guy on Saint Louis that I think
and have last name was Coleman.

Speaker 2 (02:06:22):
Oh, you're thinking of Vince Coleman. Yeah, Vince never hit
thirty home runs, though, great base dealer. He played for
the Cincinnati Reds. You want to take a shot anybody?

Speaker 11 (02:06:32):
Uh, Doe Foster not a bad guess.

Speaker 2 (02:06:35):
Actually, Eric Davis, guys, remember Eric Davis.

Speaker 9 (02:06:38):
I wouldn't have got that one, all.

Speaker 2 (02:06:41):
Right, I have. I am the record. Oh my god,
let me try that again in English. Good night, folks.
You've been a great audience. Don't forget to try the
semi bone with spaghetti, all right. I have scored more
twenty point games in the history of men's basketball in

(02:07:01):
the Olympics than anybody with a total of eleven. Ian Roddy,
what my name.

Speaker 9 (02:07:07):
I'm I'm gonna guess Carmelo Anthony.

Speaker 2 (02:07:10):
Not Carmelo Anthony. I have more twenty point games in
the history of men's basketball in the Olympics than anybody
else with a total of eleven. Mark Ramsey, what my.

Speaker 9 (02:07:19):
Name is it? Lebron?

Speaker 2 (02:07:23):
Not Lebron.

Speaker 9 (02:07:25):
Kevin Durant, guys, that was my next guest. Yeah, all right, we.

Speaker 2 (02:07:30):
Got college football just around the corner, all right. The
last time Ole Miss was ranked number one in the country,
I was their starting quarterback, Ian Roddy, what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:07:42):
This is wrong with Shaye Patterson.

Speaker 2 (02:07:44):
Well it's not Shaye Patterson. That's a good name, man,
And I wonder what he's doing. You know, he transferred
to Michigan. Was one of Hardball's desperate moves and it
almost worked, but it didn't. I liked him, you remember
him right in?

Speaker 9 (02:07:56):
Yeah, Yeah, solid player. I wonder if he's in the
Canadian Football League now.

Speaker 2 (02:07:59):
Maybe maybe he was kind of a runner like to.
He's a good player, but it's not Jaye Patterson. Last
time Old Miss, the Old Miss Rebels were number one
of the nation. I was the starting quarterback. Mark Ramsey went.

Speaker 9 (02:08:08):
My name Alex Smith, Well.

Speaker 2 (02:08:12):
That's a shoe, that's I love the name. Of course,
Alex Smith came out of Utah, but still I love
the effort. Guys, you're gonna kick yourselves. It was Dak Prescott, Oh,
Dak Prescott, Old Miss.

Speaker 9 (02:08:26):
Was he in Mississippi State or am I wait a minute,
I know that one of those schools is number one.

Speaker 2 (02:08:32):
You know, I was due for a biff double check.
It was one of those schools. But the last time
they were number one, Dak Prescott was the quarterback, so
I might have biffed it. Old miss mistake, good good catch,
good catchy and outstanding. Uh can you get it while
we waiter.

Speaker 9 (02:08:47):
It says Mississippi State.

Speaker 2 (02:08:48):
Then you're right. I knew, I knew it was one
of the two. And in my haste maybe I'm sleep depride.
But regardless had the state right, and they were number
one last time, mississ State. Mississippi State was number one.
Dak Prescott was the quarterback. All right, forgive me no
news to me. I go to confession twice next. All right.
I became the first Major League baseball player to hit

(02:09:10):
four home runs in his first three games with a
new team. Mark Ramsey, what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:09:16):
Pete Rose?

Speaker 2 (02:09:18):
I love it, not Pete Rose, by the way, hanging around.
We're gonna get to Pete Rose in about twenty minutes.
Here the great Andy Furman is gonna join us that.
I don't know if you guys have seen the Pete
Rose four part series on HBO. It's outstanding, very good.
Pete lives here in Vegas. I met him a few times.
I like Pete, and I say, what though I think
the jig's up. I don't think he's ever getting in

(02:09:39):
the Hall of Fame, not while he's alive. So but
we'll talk to Andy about that, all right. I became
the first major league player in history he hit four
home runs in my first three games with my new team.
Ian Roddy, what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:09:53):
Hmm, I'm gonna guess from this season, Juan Soto on
the Yankees.

Speaker 2 (02:10:00):
You're very close. Jazz Chishold with the Yankees.

Speaker 9 (02:10:06):
Yeah, yep, all right.

Speaker 2 (02:10:09):
Another Major League Baseball record fell. I held the record
a four and twenty three straight starts as a pitcher
with at least one strikeout.

Speaker 9 (02:10:22):
Mark Ramsey with my name, uh blue Moon Odum, I love.

Speaker 2 (02:10:28):
It, John Blue Moon odem of Oakland, A's fame. I
love it. Just the names alone are with the price
with mission. Thanks, we don't charge your mission, but still
they would be with the price major League Baseball record,
four twenty three straight starts with at least one strikeout?
Ian Roddy, what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:10:46):
I'm just gonna throw a great name out there, Nolan Ryan.

Speaker 2 (02:10:51):
That's a good one. Not Nolan, it's actually Clayton Kershaw
just got broken the other day after four under and
twenty three straight starts. All right, I'm the only NFL
player in history to return the opening kickoff for a
touchdown in the Super Bowl. Mark Ramsey, What my name?
Mark Ramsey's getting this one?

Speaker 9 (02:11:11):
Devin Hester bam.

Speaker 2 (02:11:14):
Back on track.

Speaker 9 (02:11:17):
Hall of Famer Devin Hester.

Speaker 2 (02:11:19):
Yeah, there you go, all right? You know, I wasn't
real happy that, you know, Caleb Williams couldn't take one snap.
What the hell you supposed to learn the game on
a computer? This has gone too far. This might give
you some perspective, guys. I'm an NFL quarterback, a retired
NFL quarterback. Hall of Fame, retired NFL quarterback. I once

(02:11:43):
through fifty eight passes in an NFL preseason game. That's
a record. Mark Ramsey, what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:11:53):
Say the question again?

Speaker 2 (02:11:54):
I once through fifty eight passes as a quarterback and
an NFL prese that's a record. What my name?

Speaker 9 (02:12:03):
Bart Starr, You're in the right era.

Speaker 2 (02:12:05):
It's not Bart Starr. Former Green Bay Packer. Alabama won
the first two Super Bowls under Vince Lombardi. Had Bart
Starr on my radio show once with Mark Wilson in Detroit.
Great guy. I once through fifty eight passes as a
quarterback in an NFL preseason game. It's a record Ian Roddy.

Speaker 9 (02:12:25):
What my name now? You said right? Era for Bart Starr.
So they're trying to decide between two guys, and I
am going to go with Joe Namath.

Speaker 2 (02:12:33):
It's not who's the other guy?

Speaker 9 (02:12:36):
The other was Johnny Unitis.

Speaker 2 (02:12:37):
Not well, you're close, but it's Roger Staubach.

Speaker 9 (02:12:40):
Ah Man, all right, so I wouldn't have been read
either way.

Speaker 2 (02:12:43):
But all right, you gouts a couple of beauties coming
up here to this day, I hold the Chicago Bears
rookie record for most passing yards in my rookie season
twy and sixty three. Mark Ramsey, What my name.

Speaker 9 (02:12:59):
Is that? Jim McMahon is it?

Speaker 2 (02:13:01):
It's not Jim McMahon. I love Jim McMahon. I got
recruited to play baseball b Way. I love the dude.
I don't know why people say Bear's never had a friend.
That guy was the real deal. He might not have
had huge numbers, but come on, I'm the only Chicago Bear.
Check that. I hold the Chicago Bears rookie record for
the most passing yards in a rookie season twenty one
sixty three. Interady with my.

Speaker 9 (02:13:22):
Name, it's not a particularly impressive record. Say Jay Cutler,
not Jake Cutler.

Speaker 2 (02:13:29):
Not Jay Cutler. Remember when Jay broke in? He was
with Did Jay broke in with Denver? And then he
got traded? Yeah s, all right, you got me on
the Mississippi State one. Good for you, man, It's all.
It's all to the good here. Uh you guys want
to take one more? Guess a hell with it? Mitch Trubisky,

(02:13:51):
Oh all right, I am the all time leading rebounder
of US men's Olympic basketball. Mark Rams, what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:14:03):
All I could think of is the Admiral. I don't
know if you played.

Speaker 2 (02:14:07):
David Robinson. Yeah, not David Robinson. I'm the only check
that I'm the all time leading rebounder of US men's
Olympic basketball. Mark Ran checked that. Ian Roddy. What my name?

Speaker 9 (02:14:20):
I feel like we would have heard about this recently,
But it's I'm gonna guess Anthony Davis.

Speaker 2 (02:14:25):
It's not Anthony Davis, but it is on the current team.
Once again, it's Kevin Durant. Oh wow, Kevin Durant.

Speaker 9 (02:14:32):
You know what, I should have guessed that one, because
it's just who's been to the most Olympics.

Speaker 2 (02:14:35):
Of all time leading scorer, most twenty point games, and
now the all time leading rebounder. All right, last one, guys,
I am the This one's a beauty. I'm the only
Chicago Bears quarterback in the last thirty five years to
be named All Pro. Mark Ramsey, what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:14:56):
All Pro quarterback?

Speaker 2 (02:14:58):
Yep? Vince Evans, Oh, I love Vince sevens former USC
player came off the BMW car dealership a lot that
starts some game for the Raiders. He's actually more than
thirty five years ago. But good, good name. I love
the name. All Right, we'll see if I can get it.

(02:15:21):
I'm the only Chicago Bears quarterback in the last thirty
five years to be named All Pro. Ian Roddy went
my name.

Speaker 9 (02:15:30):
Once again. I'm gonna go with Jay Cutler.

Speaker 2 (02:15:33):
Believe it or not, guys, it is Mitch Trubisky.

Speaker 9 (02:15:36):
No way.

Speaker 2 (02:15:37):
You know what mit I gotta tell you, man. People
dog him. He was like twenty eight and sixteen, completed,
sixty eight percent of his passes, went to the playoffs
two out of three years, and if not for the
double point kick, they would have won a playoff game.

Speaker 9 (02:15:53):
Yeah, there was that one year when Nagy was still
their head coach. In Trubisky, he was. He had a
decent year. I think it might have been his sophomore
ye or something.

Speaker 2 (02:16:00):
The guy. They hate the guy. And with all due
respect to Justin Fields, because I respect Justin Fields. He's
ten and twenty eight. Never put up any numbers at all,
you know, I mean ranked the thirtieth, are blown all
every major statistical category in the last six years. So
look four years, three years, whatever, it's water under the bridge,
it doesn't matter. We'll see what Kayleb Williams can do,

(02:16:22):
and we'll see what Justin Fields can do with new
life in Pittsburgh. I wouldn't hold my breath though. And
by the way, I like Justin Fields. He was brilliant
at Ohio State and he's a stellar human being and
a great locker room guy. But his default mechanism is
to run. You've got to be able to operate from
the pocket, and after thirty eight starts, if you haven't
noticed that, that might not be his his strength. By

(02:16:45):
the way, shortly after the show to later, our podcasts
will be going up. If you missed any of tonight's show,
be sure to check it out. Check out the podcast.
Just search Fox Sports Radio wherever you get your podcasts.
Be sure to follow, rate and review the podcast. Again,
just search Fox Sports wherever you get your podcast and
you'll see the show posted right after we get off
the air. Coming up. In addition to being a stellar

(02:17:07):
performer in the Olympics and the guy have a lot
of respect for Kevin, Durant had some interesting things to
say the other day as he defended Steve Kerr. He
voiced his true opinion and he made a hell of
a lot of sense. I'm Bernie Frattle. We're coming to
live from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio, Tirat dot com studios.
Keep it locked you listening to the Bernie Fradle Show

(02:17:28):
on Fox Sports Radio. All right back at the Bernie
Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to live from the
tarrac dot Com studios here in Las Vegas. Well, Chris
Rock once said, you don't get a lot of credit

(02:17:50):
for doing what you're supposed to do. But I think
Steve Kerr deserves a lot of credit. If you haven't
noticed by now, his approach to the rotation has been
to give players, well, put them in strategic positions, give
them strategic minutes so that they can take advantage of
their skills based on the opponents are playing. It's been

(02:18:10):
a sound strategy, but of course it's been criticized because
of who he benched. Remember just a few days ago
he got a ton of heat after benching Jason Tatum
and Tyrese Haliburton against Serbia. Kerr said, this is all
part of the plan. Relax. He did play Tatum in
the next game against sal Sudan, put him in the
starting lineup, but then that night it was Joel Embiid

(02:18:31):
who got benched. He played zero minutes. You know, the
great Lily Tomlin once said, I always wanted to be somebody.
I just wish I'd been more specific. You want to
be specific, be Kevin Durant. Love this dude, as I
mentioned earlier, all time leading score men's US Olympic team,
all time leading rebounder more twenty four games than anybody else.

(02:18:54):
He had a different perspective. He turns out to be
the adult in the room, he said. Quote last game,
we had a champion and an NBA guy not play
any minutes, and tonight we had an MVP not play
any minutes. They didn't complain. We had guys who stepped
up and filled the rules roles perfectly. You play to

(02:19:15):
win the game, herm Edwards. And it turns out whatever
NBA drama exists here in the United States, and of
course it does on a nightley basis, they didn't pack
it with him when they took it to Paris. The
approach is working for USA. They won their first three
games by sixty one points to the number one seed.
They head into the medal round. They play Brazil, who's

(02:19:36):
got a forty one year old point guard. All right,
need I say more? They're headed to a collision course.
I think with will either Canada or Germany, mainly probably Canada.
They're going to win the gold medal. By the time
I sign on next Saturday night, they'll have won the
gold medal. Meanwhile, what has Caleb Williams won? Well, they
want a tongue lashing from Amani Tumor. You won't believe

(02:19:59):
what he to say. I'll share it. Coming up first,
go back to our guy Dan Beyer with the latest.
Thanks Bernie.

Speaker 7 (02:20:07):
The Dodgers got back on the winning track on Saturday
night with a ten to nothing win against the Oakland
A's Shoheyotani kind of stealing the show three stolen bases,
joins the thirty to thirty club and Jack Flaherty six
innings of work, seven strikeouts, allowing just five hits and
zero earned runs in his Dodgers debut. Dodgers still four

(02:20:29):
and a half games up on the Padres in the
nl WES San Diego got past the Rockies three to two, Angels,
were five to four victors against the Mets Mariners rally
and get a six to five victory against the Phillies
that was in ten innings. In baseball's longest losing streak
continues now nineteen games for the White Sox. Twins beat
him on Saturday six to two. Sunday action already underway

(02:20:52):
in Paris at the Olympic Games Men's Golf on a
round play already underway. The leaders will tee off at
six thirty nine Eastern time this morning. In the final group,
it'll be Spain's John Ram, American Xander Shaffley who's at
fourteen under par with Ram and Tommy Fleetwood of Great
Britain at thirteen under.

Speaker 2 (02:21:12):
They will be in that final group.

Speaker 7 (02:21:14):
Scotty Scheffler and Rory McElroy will enter the day four
shots back of the lead at ten under par. Currently
in a tie for sixth men's gold medal. Tennis match
has Novak Djokovic going up against Carlos Salkarez. US women's
basketball team in action today facing Germany. Little tip off
at eleven o'clock Eastern time this morning, and if you
love the medal count, US is way ahead of everyone else.

(02:21:36):
In fact, sixty one medals right now for the Americans
after a whopping eighteen on Saturday puts them twenty ahead
of France. The Americans, though still trail China in the
number of gold medals, China at sixteen, the US has fourteen,
but Crawford remains unbeaten.

Speaker 2 (02:21:53):
Forty one to zero.

Speaker 7 (02:21:53):
Won by unanimous decision on Saturday, and I had to
claim the WBA Junior middleweight title. Helpin's restructured the contract
of wide receiver Tyreek Hill that deals worth ninety million
dollars over the next three years, with Hill getting sixty
five million dollars guaranteed.

Speaker 2 (02:22:09):
Bernie back to you Ah the dual sit Tones is
the Great Dan Byer, the man for all seasons on
our network. You'll hear him in about six and a
half hours plying his trade, and he does it quite well.
Speaking of flying his trade, well, Caleb Williams has you
have to take a snap? I don't know what the
hell these guys supposed to do to learn the game

(02:22:30):
on a computer. And then also the real bullets fly
at September eighth, and you wonder why you can't find
you took us with both hands. Former Michigan Wolverine wide
receiver and erstwhile New York Giant wide receiver Amani Tumor,
who was on the Carton Show the other day, well,
he he raised an eyebrow regarding Caleb Williams after the

(02:22:50):
number one overall pick showed I see this in their
quotes real leadership. When he implored his teammates to take
better care of the live crew, what did Amni Tumors say, quote,
He's Russell Wilson two point zero. This is not gonna
go over. Well, some rookie is gonna come in who
hasn't played one snap talking wearing the fingernail polish. Now

(02:23:14):
he's gonna come in here and tell me who's been
here and who's been through the struggle that I need
to clean up. No, how about you, rookie, how about
you clean up after me? Don't give me this crap.
I don't like it at all. I feel rookie should
earn the respect. Just because you got drafted number one
doesn't mean nothing to me. I repleate with the double negative.

(02:23:36):
Love it not the first time Caleb Williams and his
quote unique personality has come under fire. You know, Critics
ripped Caleb Williams for having a pink phone, pink fingernails
at a usc women's basketball game, and then when he
cried in his mother's arms after the tough loss last November,
just saying I wasn't one of those people. I don't care.

(02:23:57):
And uh look, there are play many of other folks
who have maintained their posture that Caleb Williams antics will
have nothing to do now that he's a quarterback in
the NFL. All right, maybe that's true. Don't tell me.
Show me you want to be yourself, you want to
be Kayleb Williams, You want to put from the rough,

(02:24:18):
do whatever the hell you think. I covered the Detroit
Lions for ten years pre and post saw it all.
Trust me, I saw it all. I saw Barry Sanders
last season, and I saw Rod Marinelli take the team
go through Zhe to sixteen. I have seen it all.
When the real bullets fly in September, all the fun
and games go out the winter. They just of course,

(02:24:39):
it is all fun and games until someone loses an eye.
It's about to get real. I suggest you give him
a few snaps under center, of course, after he's done
telling everybody to clean up the locker room. Coming up,
we're gonna be joined by the great Andy Furman. I
don't know if you have seen. I hope you have.
If you haven't, you're first in line for front of
the Botomy Charlie Hustle. In the matter of Pete, it's

(02:25:00):
a four part HBO series Petez eighty three. Now this
is his last hurrah. I don't like his chances to
get into the Hall of Fame, but I don't think
it serves any fruitful purpose anymore to keep him out. Now,
I've met a Pete a few times, but you know
who really knows him, Andy Furman. Don't miss this conversation.
I'm Bernie Fraddlewer comes to you line from the Las
Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tireck dot Com Studios. Keep it locked.

(02:25:22):
You're listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
All right, we wrapping it up on the Bernie Fradle Show.
Before I get to our Steam guests, I want to
thank my crew back in Los Angeles, Mark Ramsey, Ian
Roddy dan Byer with me since eleven pm Pacific on
Saturday night, doing a great job as always, guys in
every aspect. Great team, great teamwork, great camaraderie. Speaking of

(02:25:43):
a great teammate, he's the biggest thing to come out
of Cincinnati since Skyline Chile and Huter Pole Beer. Longtime
friend of the legend Peter Rose, a legend in his
own right. Say hello to Andy Furman. Andy, thanks for
getting up early, Bud.

Speaker 3 (02:25:56):
You know what the best thing about your show not you?
The music, your music to break Music's I love it?
I read, Oh I love it, love it my madness.

Speaker 2 (02:26:06):
Yeah so Andy, So let's let's dive into this the
Pedrose documentary four parts as Spectacular. Before I get into
your long time relationship with Pete, and before I ask
you if you're wearing the alligator shoes he bought you.
Did the documentary, Andy hurt Pete's chances of getting into

(02:26:26):
the Hall of Fame. That seems to be the narrative.

Speaker 3 (02:26:29):
You know, I think every time that he gets out
there and his name is out there, you're going to
have the affections of those who love him and those
who hate him. Some say he's a crook and something
he's not. So I don't know if it changed many
people's minds. If people think he's a bummed, they'll say
he's still a bum to say, I told you so.
If they love him, they feel bad for the guy.
They're still in his corner. So I'm not so certain.

(02:26:50):
Although I thought he came across a little crotchety, a
little you know what I mean, more of an old
man man. You know, he's showing that age. Right When
are you gonna put me in the Hall of Fame
when I die? I mean when things like that. It
just that kind of got me a little bit, and
it kind of told off a reporter when the producer
was asking him questions. So that was not the Pete

(02:27:11):
Rose that I remember, So I don't want to remember
him in that vein.

Speaker 2 (02:27:15):
Well. Absolutely, Look, Pete Rose is a colorful guy. He's funny,
he's witty, he's a life of the party. I've only
met him a couple three times. Have yucked it up
with him? You've known him to the point back to
his days at the racetrack. Talk a little bit about
your relationship with Pete and the Pete.

Speaker 11 (02:27:33):
You know well.

Speaker 3 (02:27:34):
I was a pr guy at Latonia Racecourse in Florence, Kentucky,
and then during the offseason, obviously Pete lived in Cincinnati,
and he was out there. We raced thoroughbred races at night,
thoroughbred horse racing in the evening. He'd come out there
every night and he'd sit out on the table in
the dining room. But many a time he wanted to
be alone, so we put him up in the press
box with us, and I got to know him fairly well.
And one year he went on a tour of Japan

(02:27:56):
and he came right off the plane at the airport
because our race truck was somewhe and close to the
greatest Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky airport, and he came with a
big overnight beg.

Speaker 11 (02:28:06):
He said, any come here, take a look at this.
He opened the big There must have been one hundred.

Speaker 3 (02:28:08):
Thousand dollars in cash in that big I mean, that's
the way Pete was, and he laughed, he joked, I'm
not so certain when he went to the races he
wanted to win. I think he loved to lose to
keep on playing. I mean, it was a mentality there
just to bet. And you know, we did not have
the greatest horses at Latoonia Race because there's a lot
of nags that race there. So it was very difficult,
very difficult to make a wager. But you look at

(02:28:30):
the toadboard and he'd come out there and make a
bet and he changed the odds from like twenty five
to one to night to five.

Speaker 11 (02:28:36):
That's the way Pete Rose was.

Speaker 2 (02:28:38):
Well, you're onto something very insightful, Andy Beaus. This is
someone who lives in Las Vegas and been, you know,
know my way around this whole genre. The vast majority
of betters don't get high winning the bet. They get
high making the bet because they're action junkies. They're adrenaline junkies.
Clearly Pete was, which caused him to even bet on
his own team, which he finally admitted to. I think

(02:29:01):
where he's turning. I think where the thing turns south
is that Andy, did you get the impression because I
watched all four episodes twice that he started to play
the victim a little bit that I've paid my thirty
five years, what are you gonna do? Blah blah blah.
Did you get that impression of my wrong?

Speaker 3 (02:29:17):
I did get it, And you know what, I believe
him in his corner. And maybe it's not fair for
me to say that because I'm a fan.

Speaker 11 (02:29:24):
I love the guy, I really do.

Speaker 3 (02:29:25):
But you know, edwardo Perez said the same thing, and
when I asked him question, he said, well, it's not
going to be fair. I'm not going to give you
an honest answer because I'm in love with Pete Rose.
I knew him as a young kid, so it is
that way. And I think that was a Leslie Visser
was basically an interview and she said, how do you
go to Cooperston? How do you go to Cooperstown to
look for the old time leading hitter in the game

(02:29:46):
of baseball? And his plot is not there? Boom, that's
it right there. That's the answer right there. That has
to be given. I mean, he's got to be there
because of what he's accomplished.

Speaker 11 (02:29:54):
Did he bet? Did his betting alter the hits? The
forty two fifty six hits that he got. I don't
think it did.

Speaker 2 (02:30:01):
No, that's my biggest Well, first of all, my two
biggest arguments are, I don't think it any longer serves
any fruitful purpose to keep Pete out. It's been thirty
five years. Let's make this a positive somehow, Number one,
number two, all of his you know, hitting exploits pre
date whatever betting accusations there were. And even Rob Manfred said,

(02:30:24):
this is a museum. You said the same thing, Andy,
this is a museum. Right. But one thing I want
to talk about Johnny Bench, and you have I think
in him and knowledge of the honest relationship Bench had
with Rose. Bench declined to participate in this in this documentary.
Give your thoughts on the Rose. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:30:41):
They asked Johnny Bench, basically, do you think Pete deserves
to be in the Hall of Fame? And they kind
of jumped all over the reporter and said, wait a minute.
You know there's a rule you if you bet, you
can't get him. First of all, you're right, Bernie, he
bet basically when he managed the ball club, not when
he played number one, number two. Johnny Bench, basically from
day one was envious and jealous of Pete Rose, because

(02:31:01):
Pete Rose is a native son of Cincinnati, born and
born here and loved here and still loved here with
it with a name Pete Rose Way, He's got a
street name after him where Johnny Bench has a street
named after him where and Binga, Oklahoma.

Speaker 11 (02:31:15):
All right, I get it.

Speaker 3 (02:31:16):
You know your two athletes, and you're competing on one team,
but basically one is loved and one is basically kind
of a one in one a And Johnny Bencher's the one,
a greatest catcher ever in baseball, no doubt about that.
But in Cincinnati was not loved as much as Pete
Rose was.

Speaker 2 (02:31:32):
Well, and that's very true. We're talking with Andy Furman.
You'll hear him on these air waves coming up in
about twelve minutes with Bucky Brooks, Cincinnati native, longtime friend
of Pete Rose. Before I get to what I want
to talk about next, tell the story about the time
Pete Rose botch you the alligator shoes.

Speaker 11 (02:31:47):
Oh this is you know, Peet, He's a character.

Speaker 3 (02:31:50):
So I be at the race truck every night, and
sometimes you go down to the winning circle to make
a presentation, take a picture wherever it may be. Came
back to the press box and Pete looks at me.
He says, hey, hey, and the little shoes. I can't
stand there ugly shoes. Where are you wearing those shoes?
So I said, well, you know, what are you gonna do?
The next day he comes back with a box. In
the boxes a pair of alligated shoes, about five hundred
bucks a pair of shoes. Really, I said, what's that?

(02:32:12):
He's there for you? So we need to wear these?
I said, Pete, I really can't wear them because if
I go down to the Winter's Circle right it's raining.
I don't want it to get wet and ruin me.
Where the hell do you think alligators live?

Speaker 11 (02:32:22):
Handy?

Speaker 3 (02:32:23):
Really, I mean that's he must have said. I said,
I can't take the shoes from me. He said, hey,
I got about a dozen pair. He had a pair
of yellow and gold and green. He gave me a
pair of block. I still I never wear them, but
those are my pe row shoes.

Speaker 2 (02:32:35):
Pete was funny. I mean, my buddy Roy Firestone once
asked Pete, Pete, you ever thought about what your life
would have been like if you'd have been a girl.
Pete goes, well, I've been an ugly one. I mean, Pete,
that was Pete. He was funny. So two things. There
was a point I think in the third segment, Pete says,
you know I didn't rob Banks, I didn't go around
knocking up girls. Well that's not true. That's not true.

(02:32:57):
He did I think a knockoup or at least one
other thing too. Iste people call Pete layer. I haven't
done that, but I saw the one aspect of the show.
Do you remember when he says I've never set foot
in goals gym and then two seconds later I backdrop
on the b roll they showed them and goals gym.
Those are the types of things I think that really

(02:33:17):
hurt Pete. A lack of sincerity.

Speaker 11 (02:33:20):
Yeah, you know, I just.

Speaker 3 (02:33:23):
But all these I guess extras, the golds gym, whatever
it may be. You know, that's just pounding on Pete
Rose and using that as more material to keep him
out of the Hall of Fame, which I guess people
don't understand and has nothing to do with Rob Manford
is the Baseball Hall of Fame and the writers basically
in the Hall of Fame committee that, as they say, so,

(02:33:45):
whether to let him in or not. And everybody's down
on Rob Manford at major League Baseball. It's a separate entity.
You know that, Bunny, Right, it's not major League Baseball.

Speaker 2 (02:33:52):
Yeah, let's remember back in nineteen ninety one when baseball
changed the rules to formerly ban those who had been
on the permanently an eligible list the year after Rose became.

Speaker 3 (02:34:02):
Eligible, right, You Look, it's one of those ongoing stories.
And look, I think Pete Rose right now is more
popular not being in on the outside looking.

Speaker 11 (02:34:11):
In than if you're right to be in.

Speaker 3 (02:34:12):
And I think that everybody in the world right now
wants his autograph, but probably even has his autograph because
he signs everything and anything. But what I don't understand
is is it that big of a deal if he
gets in to me.

Speaker 2 (02:34:24):
I think that after thirty five years and now that
we have gambling in baseball, as I've said, I no
longer think it serves any fruitful purpose. Last thing for me,
and he buttoned up the story. We know he was
tight with Joe Morgan, and a lot of players went
to Pete's defense, Mike Schmidt, Tony Perez, several then Morgan

(02:34:44):
passed his wife had the dinner that Pete wasn't invited to.
Then the next day, on August date, they had Joe
Morgan Day at the Park. Rose showed up, but in
a separate in a separate area of the park. Do
you know why he was not invited to that dinner?
What happened?

Speaker 3 (02:34:57):
And I think it was an oversight. Yeah, I think
it was an oversight. I really don't know exactly the
details of that. But what I enjoyed more than anything
else in that was when they interviewed Marty burn him
in the Longtime Hall of Fame.

Speaker 2 (02:35:09):
I met Martins, great guy.

Speaker 3 (02:35:10):
Yeah, yeah, the for the Cincinnati Reads. And you know,
he said it would be a shame, a tremendous shame
if in fact Pete rose down into the Hall of
Fame after he passed. And I think that that may happen.
It may very well happen. You know, why have a
hall of fame? If you get to wait for someone
to pass and put them in the Hall of fame,
let the family enjoy it.

Speaker 11 (02:35:28):
That's all I'm saying.

Speaker 2 (02:35:29):
I mean, I said the same thing I've said since
two thousand and four when I did an about face.
I was on a show with Rob Parker and Detroit
and I said, you know, the book came out, and
I said, look all right, at this point, just reinstate
him and let the voters decide. And you got the
last word.

Speaker 11 (02:35:45):
Yeah, what did Rob have to say? I'd be interested
about that.

Speaker 2 (02:35:47):
You know, Rob's dead said against him. He wouldn't vote
for him, Not now, no way, no how Rober.

Speaker 11 (02:35:52):
He wouldn't vote for Tom Brady if he had to
vote in the Hall of Fame.

Speaker 2 (02:35:55):
That's all. Can you stand four more hours? We'll go
to the Tom Brady situation.

Speaker 11 (02:35:58):
Right, It's true.

Speaker 3 (02:35:58):
I mean, I mean Tom Brady. I mean I don't
understand you. You vote on the guy's athletic prowess, that's
what you do. His personality is a separate issue. What
he did off the field a separate issue. What Pete
did with young girls allegedly, you know that has nothing
to do with the forty two to fifty six hits
that he got.

Speaker 11 (02:36:18):
Period.

Speaker 2 (02:36:19):
You're making perfect sense, Andy, but we're dealing with human
beings who often make decisions on a motion and justifyable logic.
Have a great show, Andy, Thank you, Burn. That is
the great Andy Furman. You hear him a few minutes
here with Bucky brooks Now. In case you missed it, Look,
this documentary is excellent. Four episodes HBO. It's entitled Pete Rose.

(02:36:43):
You know, the sog of Pete Rose. Whatever the heck,
it's called Charlie Hustle, the Matter of Pete Rose. And
the first two episodes are terrific. They deal with his
playing days as a young rookie coming up, and then
on with the Phillies and expos et cetera, et cetera,
then back with the Reds as a player manager, and
the final two you have to deal with the last half,
in the last thirty five years and his life in

(02:37:04):
Pete says, you know, all I did was bet on baseball,
didn't Rob Banks. To be honest with you, I guess
I'm telling the truth. What I tell you. The only
bad quality I had was that I gambled on baseball.
The problem is it's in every locker, it's in every clubhouse.
He can't do it Roses eighty three. Now he's still charming,
he's still humorous, but ultimately he was his own worst enemy.
In this documentary, you have to see it to believe it.

(02:37:26):
Good stuff from Andy Furman. It's gonna do it for
the Bernie Frattle Show. I will be back on these
airwaves next Friday night, eleven pm with plenty more high jinks.
In the meantime, keep it locked up next to Great
Andy Furman on Fox Sports Radio
