Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Oh, good morning, Happy Saturday too. You'll tell you what, fellas,
I have the Olympic spirit in.
Speaker 3 (00:09):
My soul right here.
Speaker 4 (00:10):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Yes, I am feeling it, and I was feeling it
with Team USA on the men's basketball side getting past
Serbia in an absolute classic. We've got the men they're
going for gold today against France. And the reason they're
going for gold is because they survived. They survived and
advanced against Serbia. This was on Thursday. They won ninety
(00:35):
five to ninety one. Here's the thing, there are a
lot of different directions. This is the direction I want
to go to.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
First.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Don't ever take winning for granted, you know, because there
are a lot of people that will look at Team
USA and it's star studded. It's a who's who. You
have all NBA players, They have so much talent. Jason
Tatum didn't even see the floor, right, Like, let that
think it's time all NBA first team guy. He didn't
(01:03):
play one minute against Serbia. That's how much talent they have.
But look, man, I'm sure there are a lot of
fans that are like, we didn't win by twenty what's
up with that?
Speaker 4 (01:13):
They were lucky to.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Survive against Serbia.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Hey, Serbia was lights out from three in the first
three quarters, and they were in a dog fight, and
they they scratched and clawed with their fingernails like al
Pacino once said, and they got it done a race
at thirteen point deficit heading into the fourth quarter.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
Rich.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Especially from a former professional athletes point of view, I
think that's one of the worst sins any fan can commit,
is just taking winning for granted. Where why didn't we
win by more? The hell with that? You found a
way to get it done, and they're moving on to
the gold medal match against France. I say, salute the
(01:54):
Team USA finding a way to get it done.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
Hey, yeah, I'm with you, buddy, this this is gonna
be a great show.
Speaker 5 (02:02):
We've got a ton of fun things to get into today.
But right off the top, you and I Simpatico, we agree.
We are so much so on the same page because
I actually have buddies, two guys who listen.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
I talk sports with them all the time.
Speaker 5 (02:18):
I trust their opinions, and I thought their opinions on
the Olympics both of them shared the same thought. They
were telling me, No, the Team USA they look awful,
like they should have mopped the floor with Serbia. I
can't believe they were even in the game. I can't
believe they even had the lead. I was like, had
the lead. I was like they were in danger of
losing this game heading into the fourth quarter. I was like, this,
(02:42):
this is a good Serbia team. I was like, fortunately,
it's a better team UT or Team USA. I was like,
but why are we sitting here looking at a four
point wins as something less than what it is. It's
a win on the international stage, it gains them entrance
into the gold medal match. And also, I don't want
(03:03):
to diminish Serbia or any of the teams that the
US have faced, But does anybody believe with any any
part of your heart that Team USA has played the hardest,
slash best basketball they could for forty eight minutes every
single time they're on the court. Because if you think
(03:26):
that's the case, the answer is no. I think all
of these guys have a switch. I think that switch
has been flipped on and off at different points throughout
this entire exhibition slash Olympics tournament. I think we've seen
it when they turn, when they all turn it on. Collectively,
they look unbeatable, but they also feel like there are
(03:47):
times where Team USA is like, we don't need to
give max effort and we can still get the win.
You saw it in the exhibition game against South Sudan.
You saw it a little bit in this game against
Serbia before they got behind the A and they all
had to sort of, you know, get in there and
roll their their sleeves up and give them the old
USA treatment there.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
But I don't I think that's what we're seeing.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
I think we're seeing a combination of dominance with a
little bit of complacency.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
All all I'm.
Speaker 5 (04:17):
Thrilled with is the fact that they've made it this
far and they didn't get knocked out during the knockout stage.
So let's take their wins literally, let's take the wins
where they are because we've gotten to the point where
we can see Lebron James and Steph Curry and Anthony
Edwards and Jason Tatum.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Maybe if he gets an opportunity.
Speaker 5 (04:37):
Of the four and the Durantula against Wemby and the finals,
it's gonna be fun.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
So nothing that you guys are saying is wrong, But
I'm just not impressed at all by this. Okay, contrarian Jerry,
I like, I feel like I'm on an island here.
Usually I'm the one that's agreeing and you know, shaking,
I'm nodding no. And here's why I'm nodding no. It
doesn't feel like it's what the spirit of the Olympics
(05:03):
should be. And I've said this before, and I'm a
fan of what they're doing. Obviously I want Team USA
to win gold. I'm not like anti American, but this
is just this isn't what the Olympics is. Like, Hey,
we're just gonna be in cruise control until we get
pushed and then when someone actually can can compete with
us at the level that we're at, that's when we're
(05:25):
gonna start playing our best game, which means of the
I don't know how many exact games they played.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
A couple in the knockout round, a few in the
group stage. Let's say the.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Percentage of the best we've seen from Team USA ten
percent of the game, maybe twenty percent. Like if you
take the full allotment of minutes that Team USA has
played in this Olympic tournament, I would say maybe ten
to twenty percent is like the highest possible outcome, like
(05:56):
the best, the best of the best. This is the Olympics.
You should have to compete at your highest peak. Go
watch the sprinters and say if they can give twenty
percent max effort and still win. Like That's why I
don't like these NBA guys in the Olympics to begin with.
It takes a sport that is already very watered down
(06:19):
on the international stage compared to what we see in
the NBA, and it just brings it down to a
different level. And I just I'm not it's not what
the spirit of the Olympics is. They were a seventeen
point favorite in this game and they had the scrap
and claw.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Just to get the win.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
For perspective, in the NBA, in the last twenty years,
there have been one hundred and thirteen seventeen point underdogs.
Five of them have won outright. It just it doesn't happen.
They should be cruising to this gold medal and they're not.
So do I am I happy for Kimusa. They're gonna
(06:59):
beat the pants off France probably today. Yeah, sure, but
I haven't been that impressed with this run. And I
don't like Olympics the NBA players in the Olympics.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
I think it makes it.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Just not as exciting of a of a of a
tournament to watch because when can name the score, Hey,
we're down, let's turn it on. That shouldn't that shouldn't happen.
That doesn't happen normally in the highest levels of competitive sport,
where you have to compete at your highest level the
entire tournament or else you're going home.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
That sounds a little like Soviet Smith to me.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Right now, be honest with you, ussr over here point
of view.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
Hey, I'll tell you right now.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
We read you, right, Brian, we read you, comrade.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
You know, here's the thing that I would start with
is that that's right.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Yeah, an American and it's the sick. It would be
funnier if Russia was actually if they're playing Russia.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
In the final.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Oh man, yeah, that really racky four moment there, right.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
I think this. I hear what you're saying, Jared.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
But the first thing that I would start with is
for anybody get this thought out of your head that
team USA is so superior talent wise that no one
can have like a good quarter or a good half
or a good three quarters against Team USA, right, Like,
I think it's I think it's the wrong point of
(08:33):
view to look at a team like Serbia led by
Nicola Jokic, who's won three of four MVPs, you know,
and all of a sudden they're hitting fifteen of thirty
three pointers in the first three quarters.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
Yeah, it's great equalizer.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
It's like that is It's like.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
That makes sense why they were down by thirteen points.
And I get it, Jared, Team USA can crank it
up to a level where if they're on their if
they're on their game, no one can hang with them.
But the sport of basketball, there's a sixth defender. It's
the rim, you know what I mean, Like you could
swing it around and get an open shot and clang it,
and like that's just the equalizer. In basketball, the three
(09:13):
point line is a goofy thing. The sixth defender is
a goofy thing. It sounds like I'm making all these
excuses for Team USA. I promise you I'm not. I
just think that we have this elevated point of view
of Team USA where they are compared to some of
these international teams that are way better than what they
(09:34):
used to be. And I think we haven't recalibrated our
expectations for non US teams where we look at.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
It and we're like, what the hell they should have crushed?
Speaker 2 (09:44):
How many times does this happen in non basketball like football.
Look at the Patriots and they were favored by double
digits against the Giants in Super Bowl forty two.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (09:54):
You could play that game all day, like your favor
to win by three touchdowns? What do you do with
in this dog fight? It happens a lot more than
you think it does. And that's where I think Team
Serbia just lights out from three and Team USA had
to scratch and clawban I actually give them credit. I
see the counter point of like you should have never
(10:15):
been in that spot to begin.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
With, I say hogwash.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
I say that Serbia is good enough where they're capable
of having a lead going into the fourth quarter, and
it's not just because Team USA isn't focused and isn't
on their game.
Speaker 5 (10:31):
Back in twenty twenty three, this was October of twenty
twenty three, the NBA put out a press release where
they announced a record one hundred and twenty five international
players from forty countries and territories are on opening night
rosters for the twenty twenty three to twenty twenty four season,
including a record number of players from Canada and France
(10:52):
Canada with twenty six, France with fourteen. The borders of
this sport are expanding. The NBA is getting what they wanted.
They want more interest across the world and as a result,
the same way, we have kids in this country who
are enamored with Lebron James, who, looking like a defensive
(11:14):
end in the NFL, moves unbelievably gracefully and can finish
at the hoop. You have Steph Curry, who, even though
his diminutive stature suggests he shouldn't even play in the league,
his ball handling skills in his shooting prowess has made
him a Hall of Famer and one of the greatest
point guards the game has ever seen. The same way,
(11:35):
our kids in this country are enamored with those athletes.
So are the kids around the world now because MBA
has expanded that border. So I agree with you, Brian,
like one hundred percent in lockstep with you. I think
the two things that are happening our people are getting
underwhelmed with wins, and wins.
Speaker 4 (11:52):
Are what we're after.
Speaker 5 (11:53):
Here's its survive in advance come tournament time in every
single sport, especially when you're talking about single elimination.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
And here we are.
Speaker 5 (12:01):
The US has survived and advanced to the gold medal round.
And also the international stage has become more competitive because
of what I just said. This was the NBA's stated
goal a decade ago, adam silver, along with some other
things that they wanted to progress towards, wanted to expand
the borders of the game. These players, they almost go
(12:23):
out on mission trips, you know, to Africa and to
Europe and to Asia to bring basketball to places that
don't have access to these players typically. So this is
what happens when you do that, When you expand the
borders of the game, people start catching up, and the
international stage is starting to catch up.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Yeah no, let me rephrase from the last time, because
I don't want to get emails from you know, angry Americans.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
I can already see the tweet coming in.
Speaker 4 (12:57):
The show go back to Serbia.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
I love America.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
I can't wait till we watch the flour with France
today and we're gonna eat freedom fries all afternoon.
Speaker 5 (13:11):
But by the way, this sounds like a hostage letter
that he's reading.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
Blink twice if you need me to come save you.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
But it all comes down to what I do every day,
which is look at points breads. And I know this
sounds really like cold. But let's say we're flash forward
to college football season. Oh thank god college football's back soon.
College football season, Alabama, big favorite, barely gets by Toledo.
How are we talking about Alabama the next day? Are
(13:41):
we praising the win? Or are we saying, Man, you
were a seventeen or in the football case, the football
equivalal of a seventeen point favorites like twenty five thirty
five points plus you were a five touchdown favorite against
Toledo and you needed a last second touchdown to beat them. Man,
your prospects going forward don't look that great, right, And
(14:03):
obviously it's the Olympics. We're not prospecting forward. But it
goes back to what you guys just said, and you're
one hundred percent right. The international stage for basketball is
much brighter now than it was four years ago, and
our expectations as fans as Americans need.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
To also adjust with it.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
And has tm USA.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
I think they've covered once the whole tournament, right, Good
teams win, great teams cover. And I'm not saying that
because it's callous with gambling and you know, Olympics team,
you know, school spirit, you know. But at the end
of the day, that's how I grade these teams, like
if you can barely get by on the point spread
night after night, game after game, and let's be honest,
(14:45):
Team USA has had a few whoopsies during this run
where they almost slipped up. Remember the game against South Sudan.
I mean, goodness, gracious, they haven't covered. They have not
met expectations during this run. I'm very excited for them
to win gold. They were expected to win gold. Were
a five dollars favorite to win gold, which means the
market said they had like a seventy five eighty percent
(15:05):
chance to win the gold medal. They they should win
the gold medal. This is what they should be doing.
They should be cruising to this gold medal.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
But they're not.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
They're gonna just skate by and we'll see.
Speaker 1 (15:14):
How the game goes today.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
But I'm not gonna run this whole parade back for them,
like they're the greatest things in sliced bread. They're a
team that needed every ounce of their talent and their
grit to get by some of these games. And I'm
glad that we've seen it. But it hasn't been this coronation.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
For me with this.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
It's been a it's been a struggle for sure.
Speaker 6 (15:32):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
It still sounds like Soviet smith. Honest here our technical no,
we've we've improved to the Baltics.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Now yeah, all right, okay, so round of Leningrad.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
All right.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
Our technical producer Chris Burffett has something quickly on this.
Speaker 7 (15:47):
Yeah, yeah, I I I appreciate everything Jared's saying.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
I just want him to know you should keep Toledo's
name out of your mouth as well.
Speaker 4 (15:58):
This y yeah, yeah, it.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
Took offense to that.
Speaker 4 (16:01):
You have to.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
They're in a dogfight with Toledo. Every Toledo fan was like,
what why are you calling us?
Speaker 4 (16:07):
Oh Toledo?
Speaker 6 (16:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (16:11):
Should we rephrase?
Speaker 1 (16:12):
Maybe I should go to like bowling Citadel or bowling Green.
There you go.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
Yeah, yeah, we'll have a little bit more on the
gold medal match US against France. I think this super fast,
last little quick, quick quick point is that I think
that we can get lost in the shuffle sometimes where
I get it. Some people are like, hey, tm us,
they should have won by more. I say, it's really
(16:37):
hard to win sometimes when you're a massive favorite. That
is real pressure. When you're trailing, you're losing, and it's
like we're expected to win. You can get in your
own head real fast like that. It's part of me though,
that's true. The other part of it is that sometimes
you you missed the obvious. That was such a tremendous
basketball game, you know what I mean? Like that, I
(16:58):
agree with one hundred percent. Forget about it. It should
have been this, Yeah, it should have been that. It's
like that was some high level basketball. Steve Kurz said
that was one of the greatest basketball games he's ever been.
Speaker 4 (17:11):
A part of.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
Oh wow, think about that.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
You think he was there with He was a teammate
of Jordan when he hit the shot against the Jazz
in ninety eight. Right, Think about some of the games
as a player he's been involved in as a coach
that he's been involved in, and that game against Serbia.
He said that was one of the greatest games ever.
KD said the same thing. Think about the high level
games KD has been a part of.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
So it's cool that Jokic was on the other side.
I think that's the one thing that makes it really interesting. Yeah,
because they have a lot of, you know, history with him.
Speaker 1 (17:41):
I love this from KD. This is funny too. Sor
if I'm getting forgetting number thirty's name, But he played
a great game.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
He was giving him credit like, man, they played great.
Like it wasn't just Jokic, it was Bogie and uh Man.
Speaker 1 (17:55):
Number thirty you could have got my head. I couldn't
tell you his name, but man, he was playing really well.
Speaker 2 (18:00):

Speaker 2 (19:56):
So we get into the soap opera going on in
the NFL with wide receivers. We start with prime candidate
number one, Brandon Ayyuk of the San Francisco forty nine Ers.
He wants to get paid, understandable. The Niners say, we
don't want to pay you as much as you want
to be paid. And now it's like, well, is he
(20:17):
going to be traded? Well, there was a trade set
in motion. It was agreed upon. According to NBC Sports
Matt Mayoko, who covers the forty nine Ers, does a
great job, and he reported that the Browns and the
forty nine Ers agreed to send Ayuk to the Browns
in exchange for wide receiver Amari Cooper and also a
(20:41):
second and a fifth round pick. Problem was, Ayuk said,
uh no, don't want to do it. And so I
have a new nickname for Brandon Nyuk. I call him Goldielocks.
That's what I'm calling him. Oh because just like Goldilocks, Like, no,
this isn't quite to my liking. Oh, that isn't quite
to my liking. No, this isn't quite to my like.
(21:03):
He gets like, here, here's the deal. You can get
traded to a team like the Browns, maybe get the
contract that you want, but something else isn't to your liking.
It's either door number one or it's door number two.
Run it back with the Niners and come in at
a price point that might be a little bit lower
than what you want. But something's got to give. It
can't be perfect all the way around. And it looks
(21:23):
like Ayuk is waiting for perfection. I don't think that's
gonna happen.
Speaker 4 (21:27):
I don't think it's gonna happen.
Speaker 5 (21:29):
And also, I think, personally, and this is just my
own opinion on this situation, he's got this whole thing backwards.
I think Ayuk is gonna end up in a situation
where he finds himself chasing after the money and maybe
he'll find it, Maybe he'll find it elsewhere. Maybe he
feels like he's really getting the raw deal from the Niners,
and come the end of his career, he's going to
(21:52):
be looking for opportunities to tag along with great teams
so that he has a chance to earn the legacy
that he has an opportunity for now, he's on the
overwhelming favorite, or I should say the favorite to win
the Super Bowl this year in terms of being with
the forty nine ers. Remember when Tyreek Hill when that
(22:14):
whole surprise came out that he was getting traded to
the Miami Dolphins, and we're like, oh my gosh, what
are the.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
Chiefs gonna do?
Speaker 5 (22:21):
And Tyreek Hill, I mean, it's like you're kind of
you're taking the gravy train and you're taking it off
the real rails like you were on biscuit wheels here, buddy,
you were gonna win more Super Bowls with Mahomes And
it's like, what were you doing?
Speaker 4 (22:34):
Well, he already has a super Bowl in his pocket,
you know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (22:38):
Like he's kind of been there, done that, so chasing
the bag at that point in his career makes a.
Speaker 4 (22:43):
Lot more sense to me.
Speaker 5 (22:44):
This feels backwards like what Ayuk is doing. And don't
get me wrong, like I always want a player to
chase after what he wants because it's such a short
window and clearly what he wants is the biggest contract
he can possibly wrap his hands around.
Speaker 4 (23:01):
That's great, I get it.
Speaker 5 (23:03):
But man, I'm telling you this, if we're arguing over
say total contract amount ten million dollars, eight million dollars,
I mean five million dollars, I've seen We've seen this before,
where guys are literally quibbling over percentage points on a
contract for an opportunity to play for a real Super
Bowl contender. I feel like this is a little misguide,
(23:25):
and I feel like it may not all be Brandon
Ayuka could be his representation as well.
Speaker 3 (23:31):
Yeah, I struggle with stories like these because I'm basically
shopping in the kitty department compared to what these guys
are doing with their contracts and the money that they're making.
Like I'm basically, like you know, in you know, going
getting a happy meal for McDonald's, while these guys are
getting you know, like thee hundred.
Speaker 1 (23:46):
Big big mac patties.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
But the way that I perceive it is the way
the way that Brian laid it out.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
I think he's right. You know, you're you're kind of
quibbling back and.
Speaker 3 (23:56):
Forth about which road to take. Both roads require some
sort of compromise, and there doesn't seem to be. Now again,
I'm only looking at it from the outside and what
is reported. That is why I struggle with these stories.
I need information to make an accurate assessment. I feel
like the information we get on these stories are just wrong,
(24:20):
Like a lot of it is released with purpose to
kind of mislead and to misguide the people reading them
because it changes your perception on the story and it
allows the renegotiation to take place. Like a lot of times,
the information we get on these contract stories is targeted
information that gets released so the team or teams that
are looking to acquire this player look at this player
(24:43):
in a different way. Right, it's propaganda. So it's hard
for me to really sift through it. But it's easier
a little bit these days because these guys are on
their social media is blab in every five minutes, and
Brandon Ayuk has been very active on social media kind
of talking about the like he went on Instagram yesterday
and commented about some guy commenting about the trade possibly happening.
(25:06):
So we kind of have to use our social psychology
brains to sift through this. I do think Brandon wants
to play football this year, whereas some of these stories,
you could tell these guys just don't want to play
like they're just they're waiting for the big money, and
unless the big money comes, they don't want to play.
The fact that we've restarted negotiations with the Niners at
(25:28):
least is a positive step, and they haven't just completely
walked like sometimes when this happens and all the dirty
laundry gets aired and then the trade doesn't happen, right, Brian,
the guys just like, screw it. I don't want to
deal with you guys anymore, and they just move on.
Whereas it does seem like at least there is some
renegotiation happening with the Niners. I don't know if it's
gonna happen. I hope it happens. But at least both
(25:48):
parties after all of this drama haven't just gone to
their separate corners and stop talking. Like communication is key,
and it does seem like there at least is some
more communication happening here. If you want my prediction of
what happens in the end, he stays in San Francisco
and we don't even talk about this in six months
because the.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
Niners are winning too mini games.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
Yeah, I think he stays, and that's the thing. The
Niners leverage has improved because it's very basic. If there
are a couple of teams that are interested, and we
had the Browns, the Patriots, the Steelers, and Iyuk is like, now,
I don't.
Speaker 1 (26:22):
Want to go to the Patriots.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
I don't know about the quarterback situation that I don't
want to go to the Browns. You know, for whatever reason,
the Steelers might not have actually made an offer. The
Niners are looking at this like, where are you gonna go?
You know, it's either you're gonna accept the deal we're
offering you or what You're not gonna go to another team.
They're not to your liking, and we doubt you're gonna
(26:45):
sit out this entire season.
Speaker 1 (26:47):
So I'm with you, Jared. I think he's back with
the Niners.
Speaker 4 (26:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
I've thought that from the beginning because the Niners this
is they're all in moment. This is the time to
go all in to win a Super Bowl. And I
know you can't pay everybody, But as the leverage is
going more so toward the Niners, I think it's much
more likely that Ayuk is right back there.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Our leverage always improves when we hear from one Isaac
Lowenkron who was with us this morning.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
I low with the latest.
Speaker 10 (27:16):
Good morning fellas, and for the first time in what
seven months, I've got actual NFL results to tell you about. Wow, Okay,
a milestone that the finish line of our long, long
wait is almost over, because we had three NFL preseason games.
(27:37):
On Friday night, Miami Dolphins over the Atlanta Falcons twenty
to thirteen. Atlanta rookie quarterback Michael Pennock Junior completed nine
of sixteen fo one hundred and four yards. The Houston
Texans won at Pittsburgh twenty to twelve. Russell Wilson did
not play, but Pittsburgh quarterback Justin Fields completed five of
six for sixty seven yards. The Philadelphia Eagles with a
sixteen to thirteen victory at Baltimore. Jake Elliott the game
(28:00):
winning forty nine yard field goal at the Gun. Today's
action kicks off a noon Eastern with the Jets visiting Washington.
Washington rookie quarterback Jaden Daniels arrived at the stadium a
short time ago wearing a throwback Doug Williams Washington Jersey Williams,
of course, the MVP in Washington's Super Bowl victory back
(28:20):
in Super Bowl twenty two.
Speaker 7 (28:22):
Nice touch there by the rookie.
Speaker 10 (28:24):
In Major League Baseball on Friday night, the Los Angeles
Dodgers got sho Hey Otani's thirty fifth home run of
the season helped him defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates nine to five.
The Arizona Diamondbacks over the Philadelphia Phillies three to two
on Adrian del Castillo's game winning home run in the
bottom of the ninth inning. It was the first home
run of his career in the second game of his career.
(28:46):
San Francisco Giants over the Detroit Tigers three to two.
Speaker 7 (28:49):
The Giants have won three straight.
Speaker 10 (28:51):
And eleven of fourteen and finally coming up at eleven
am Eastern time this morning at the Olympics, the gold
medal match in women's soccer between Team USA and Brazil.
Speaker 7 (29:02):
Fella back to you, thank you, I Lo.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
It is Fox Sports Saturday, right here on Fox Sports Radio.
Shortly after the show, our podcast would be going up.
Speaker 1 (29:10):
Miss anything on today's show, be sure to check it out.
Speaker 2 (29:12):
Just search Fox Sports Radio wherever you get your podcasts.
Be also sure to follow, rate and review it again
just search Fox Sports radio wherever you get your podcasts,
and you'll see this show posted right after we get
off the air. So Amari Cooper Brown's wide receiver a
subject of trade rumors right the IUKE deal was in place.
Reportedly Amari Cooper was part of that trade proposal, and
(29:37):
so he put on his IG story he said, Lol,
I wouldn't mind at all, little change of scenery, right,
like maybe going to the diners here, which I find
interesting because there's a good chance that he doesn't go
anywhere and he stays with the Browns. And he said,
I wouldn't mind at all change the scenery.
Speaker 1 (29:55):
Sounds pretty good.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
And so this is a question that boils down to
which team is the best place for Brandon Nyyuk and
also Amari Cooper, and I think it's the same team.
Speaker 1 (30:06):
I think it's the Niners.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Yeah, right, Like that's the best spot for both receivers.
And I think that might be a little light bulb
moment for Brandon ny Yuk of like, hey, there's nothing
wrong trying to get as much money as possible, Like
this is a negotiation, no issue with it, but I
don't want it to get to the sour grapes level.
So much where he's kind of like, fine, get me
(30:28):
out of it, and it gets so personal, right because
he's got a really good thing going and I can't
believe I'm saying this. Brock Purty compared to Deshaun Watson,
we know who's more talented, but there are far fewer
questions about brock Perty's production within that offense and with
those weapons around him than there are with Deshaun Watson
(30:50):
right now after two really down seasons in limited play, Like,
I think that you're in a better spot if you're
a Yuk or if you're a Mari Cooper within that
Niners offense and a loaded team.
Speaker 1 (31:03):
I think it's the best spot for both wide receivers.
Speaker 5 (31:05):
So I got two kids, they're nine years old and
six years old, and there is a viral hit sensation.
If you're a father or a mom and you're listening
to us, you know the name of the show called Bluey.
Speaker 4 (31:17):
It's available streaming on Disney.
Speaker 5 (31:19):
Okay, And one of their I'm not even getting this
is not a lie. One of their recent episodes that
they came out with called The Sign actually put me
in tears.
Speaker 4 (31:29):
It was a beautiful story. They did a wonderful job.
Speaker 5 (31:32):
It was a twenty minute cartoon, but it it hit
you right. It pressed all the right buttons because the
sign that they're referring to in the name of the
episode was a forced sale sign in front of their house.
End of the episode, they decide not to sell the home.
The kids come running back in. They have pizza on
the floor because they had moved out all their furniture
(31:53):
and everybody was so excited that they decided not to
try to make a huge change to make their lives better.
To realize what they had right there right there was
staring at them in the face, the tree in the backyard.
They love the living room, all the memories in the kitchen,
like it's all right there for you. Brandon Ayuk he's
put up the for sale sign and he's not really
(32:14):
realizing what's behind it. He's he's got everything he needs.
This is ridiculous. He's he's thinking it's better. The grass
is always greener. Ah, you know, will be closer to
where we got to. The kids, they'll get used to that.
They'll make friends at their new school.
Speaker 4 (32:30):
Ah.
Speaker 5 (32:30):
The neighbors kind of annoy us, you know, remember when
the mailman, you know, he broke the lunch, the latch
on the fence, and we've never been able to replace
me because he's he can't figure it out, Like the
dog gets out of this yard.
Speaker 4 (32:42):
Two off.
Speaker 5 (32:43):
Whatever your complaints are about your own home, just realize
when you move across town, it may not be as good.
Speaker 4 (32:49):
And that's what he's doing. Man, He's put up the
for sale sign on a really good house. He should stay.
He should stay because there's no place like home.
Speaker 5 (32:58):
And I'm telling you if if Brandon Ayuk leaves, he's
not gonna be in a better situation. He may have
more money, he may have a big old contract. He
may be the top paid receiver in this league. And
by the way, he's talented enough to get that money.
I'm not saying he isn't. But man, oh man, he's
gonna turn his back on an opportunity, and I promise
you he'll look back and regret the decision at some point,
(33:20):
I promise you.
Speaker 11 (33:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
That was beautiful. And we also get Blue in the show.
So we got two things.
Speaker 4 (33:26):
We got two things.
Speaker 3 (33:28):
Anytime we can get life lessons back to Blue, I'm
all in. And that's the part about this, Like this
feels as much as it's a sports story, right, it's
a sports story, it's a life story. Everyone can relate
to this, everyone can relate to change, the uncertainty of
going through change, and the thing we fail to forget
because most of the population is significantly older than Brandon Ayuk,
(33:51):
who's twenty six. He's a kid like and all most
for the most part, unless you're Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers
was in his forties, most of these players are kids.
They're in their twenties, they're twenty two years old, twenty
five years old on average, Like they're remember the life
decisions you were trying to make, the important ones at
age twenty five, and how many dumb decisions you made.
(34:12):
I can raise my hand, I made a bunch, So
to me, it's it's all about embracing that uncertainty. If
I'm Brandon or if I'm Ceedee Lamb or anyone else. Right,
he's going through a contracting you mentioned, uh Cooper, They're
all going through this fear of the unknown, and it
makes people act in certain ways that probably isn't congruent
(34:33):
to who their true personalities are. I'm a law of
detachment guy, I detach from all possible outcomes, So whatever
outcome happens, I didn't attach myself to one outcome that
I wanted. Obviously we have hopes and dreams and goals,
but the law of detachment is how I view a
lot of these stories. And if I'm Brandon, or if
(34:54):
I'm any of these receivers that we're going to talk
about today that are going through some unknowns and uncertainties
in their life, just embrace the uncertainty and however it
plays out, it plays out, and then you approach that
new situation with a fresh mindset.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
That to me is a winning attitude and a winning mindset.
Speaker 3 (35:09):
And I think what we're talking about today these guys
trying to control the narrative so much that they're strangling
the life out of it. And I think at the
end of the day it'll work out positively. At Brandon
Stay's in San Francisco, I think the more interesting thing
is is.
Speaker 1 (35:24):
Cooper's comments about wanting to leave Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (35:27):
To me, that's the most interesting part of this story
right now.
Speaker 1 (35:32):
That's the voice of Jared Smith right there.
Speaker 2 (35:34):
FSR Betting analyst Rich Hornberger with US Penn State All American.
I'm Brian know all right. Coming up next, we go
back to the futures. There's an NFL award up for grabs.
Jared says, we will hate one of his two selections
for the award. Very curious about this. We'll find out
what's what Coming up? It is Fox Sports Saturday right
(35:55):
here on Fox Sports Radio. It is Fox Sports Saturday
here on Fox Sports Video. No time to waste, let's
dive into this.
Speaker 8 (36:05):
It's back to the futures.
Speaker 9 (36:08):
Maybe we could be worst coming back.
Speaker 1 (36:10):
Okay, we are going back to the futures.
Speaker 2 (36:13):
Looking at the futures market here, Jared has the NFL
Coach of the Year circled here. Yeah, we're gonna compare notes.
You got a couple of selections. We're gonna absolutely despise
one of these selections from you, Jared Smith.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
Is what you're telling us? What do you have for us?
Speaker 4 (36:30):
Are you excited now?
Speaker 3 (36:32):
Do you guys want the one you're gonna hate first?
Or do you want something a little bit more palatable first?
Speaker 4 (36:37):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 5 (36:37):
All right, Brian, you tell me what you want, but
I feel like you should give us the more palatable
choices or choice, okay, and then hit us and be
brief this way we can really roastah.
Speaker 4 (36:48):
Yeah, yeah, last Yeah.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
Here's what I'll do. The first thing I'll do, and
I won't go too crazy about the analysis because I
think a lot of this is self explanatory. But I
will tell you that the average preseason win told for
the last fifteen winners of this award has been seven
and a half. So what does that tell you? Don't
look at the Chiefs or the Eagles. Are the Niners
like Nick Sirian Andy Reid ain't winning this award, So
(37:10):
you can eliminate a lot of those top tier teams.
We are looking for middle to below average teams that
are going to overachieve. Well, I think the first one
that comes to mind is the guy that took the
exact rout of last year. I remember last year Kevin
Stefanski won and it was it was a weird year
because I honestly think Dmiko Ryan should have won.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
But you had the Joe Flacco situation.
Speaker 3 (37:33):
Great roster, terrible quarterback situation that matches what the Vikings
are this year. Fantastic roster questions at quarterback with Donald
and McCarthy. So Kevin O'Connell I think needs to be
at the top of the list. Now let's go to
the rookie head coaches, because the rookie head.
Speaker 1 (37:49):
Coaches tend to get a little more love here.
Speaker 3 (37:53):
I think Mike McDonald makes a lot of sense because
he actually has a good quarterback situation if Gino Smith
is healthy, and I think that defense in Seattle is
going to be a lot better than expected. He is
a guy that is on my list. So those are
two I would say palatable names. Here's the crazy one. Okay,
are week am I completely crazy to think that if
(38:14):
the Panthers win the NFC South this year, Dave Canallis
is not gonna win Coach of the Year because the
odds for those two are very different. Right, The Panthers
are like ten to one to win Coach of the
Year or to win the division, and Canallas is like
twenty to one to win coach of the year. If
the Panthers somehow win the NFC South after all the
crap last year and this year, I think Dave canal
is gonna win Coach of the Year.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
Now, there's a.
Speaker 3 (38:36):
Lot of questions with Carolina. I totally understand that, but
it's if it's coach of the year, you got to
do something to earn it, right, You've got to turn
around a losing franchise. So I think Carolina with bright
Young really didn't show you his best stuff last year.
I think he's gonna I think Canalis will help this year,
and I think that's a number that will come down
(38:57):
if the Panthers can win a few games early.
Speaker 4 (39:00):
Wow. I don't hate it as much as I thought
I would. Wow. Yeah, I made a good Yeah. Yeah,
I don't hate it as much I thought it would.
Speaker 5 (39:08):
In fact, I think I hate my pick of kind
of my sleeper pick for Coach of the Year more
than yours.
Speaker 4 (39:15):
I like Robert Sala for this award.
Speaker 5 (39:19):
I feel like if he can navigate a successful season,
even if the Jets have an underwhelming playoff appearance, should
they get that far. This is a team that won
seven games last year, and you imagine if bad Aaron Rodgers,
they'd be in the double digits because some of those
losses were close losses, and.
Speaker 4 (39:37):
I think if you have a capable quarterback, those are wins.
Speaker 5 (39:41):
And so I think if he can navigate the trickiness
of being Aaron Rodgers head coach, he might.
Speaker 4 (39:47):
Win this award.
Speaker 2 (39:49):
You know, I'm sticking with the NFC South because listen,
this is as Jared said, this is sometimes the biggest
surprise or the biggest improvement.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
You get a lot of.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
Points for the NFL Coach of the Year if you
check those boxes. I'm looking at Falcons rookie head coach
Raheem Morris because think about this, the Falcons have won
seven games in five of the last six seasons. That
is not a gauntlet of a division. If they somehow
win the NFC South, maybe win ten games, I think
(40:22):
he has a great shot to win coach Coach of
the Year. I think he's gonna improve that defense. And
if Kirk goes down and he's winning games with the
rookie and Michael Pennix.
Speaker 1 (40:30):
Junior, he's basically a shoeing to.
Speaker 4 (40:33):
Win that goes down. I like it.
Speaker 1 (40:34):
The question I have on salad is Sally gonna get
the credit?
Speaker 3 (40:37):
Or is Rogers gonna get the credit?
Speaker 2 (40:39):
We shall have the question I have yeah coming up next,
to play or not to play?
Speaker 4 (40:43):
Ah?
Speaker 2 (40:44):
Yes, happy Saturday too. You hope you're having a great day.
So the question to play or not to play in
the NFL preseason, I'll tell you what this blew my mind.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
So last night c J.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
Stroud played for the Houston Texans great outstanding rookie season
last year, and he got two series let a touchdown
drive through a touchdown pass to Tank Dell. Tank Dell
had a season ending broken fibula in Week thirteen, and
he was out there in the preseason right next thing
you know, he's celebrating in the end zone.
Speaker 1 (41:20):
And yet you had.
Speaker 2 (41:22):
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young not get a single snap.
Speaker 1 (41:26):
Now, this is what's crazy to be.
Speaker 4 (41:28):
C J.
Speaker 2 (41:28):
Stroud was electric last season. He's playing in the preseason.
Bryce Young had the worst passer rating in the NFL
last season, and he's getting no snaps with a brand
new head coach in Dave Canalis. Someone explained this to me, right,
this is just odd to me how some of these
teams are just petrified and oh no, what if our
(41:52):
quarterback gets hurt. I get the injury concerns, but I
would say there's a suck concern. Okay, Like it's our
quarterback gonna suck when he gets out there. That's a
greater concern than is he gonna get dinged up in
the preseason. I would get Bryce Young some reps in
the preseason. I would get any struggling quarterback or any
(42:12):
young quarterback some reps in the preseason. Mahomes is playing.
Mahomes is playing after back to back super Bowls. He
might get a full quarter in the preseason, and we
can't get Bryce Young out there.
Speaker 1 (42:25):
Makes no sense to me.
Speaker 4 (42:27):
I get it. It makes no sense.
Speaker 5 (42:28):
But I also get it from the standpoint of what
if the Carolina Panthers are turning on their practice.
Speaker 4 (42:35):
Tape and they're like, Bryce ain't ready. He's still not ready.
He still doesn't get it, you know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (42:41):
I'm not saying that's what it is, but what if,
right hypothetically after watching last season, I don't think it's
a ridiculous thing to say. And if he isn't well,
what happens to his confidence if he goes out there
in the preseason and for an entire week or part
of a week until the news cycle shifts, we're discussing
(43:02):
how Bryce Young isn't it? You know what I mean? Like,
what does it do you know? Especially since you have
time here now. I'm not saying a month is a
long time, but we have a month until we see
regular season football. So a lot can change in a
very short amount of time with certain players, and I've
seen the light bulb come on for players over the
matter of weeks. You know, a guy goes out there
(43:24):
as an offensive lineman, he hasn't had a ton of
reps in game situations, he gives up four sacks in
his first game, and by week five, by week six,
all of a sudden, he's playing like a pro bowler
because he's figured out the speed of the game. You know,
at all positions, whether it's linebacker, defensive back, or running
back or quarterbacks, sometimes the light bulb turns on. And
(43:44):
I think it's possible that they want to see the
depth at the quarterback position because they're happy with the
way Bryce Young's playing and they want to maybe preserve
his health. But I also think it's possible that he's
still really struggling and they don't want to shatter his confidence.
Speaker 1 (44:00):
Yet that would be upsetting and unsettling.
Speaker 3 (44:04):
I think if that was true, and I have no
idea if it is, I hope it's not it. And
you would know way more about this in terms of
the context of how teams prepare in the preseason rich
compared to the regular season. But I do think that
we're seeing a lot more of these joint practices now.
I counted almost twenty of them this year, which are
(44:26):
basically like preseason game. Like they have full scrimmages and
they have you know, you're playing someone else. It's not
like you're practicing against yourself. And I think that kind
of lessens the importance of preseason just a little bit
because they get live reps against other teams who don't
know their playbook right when you're practicing and you're scrimmaging
(44:46):
against yourself, your own team, like you know the playbook,
you know the call, you know everything. So it's a
little water down in terms of the intensity level. But
I know these joint practices. I mean, go watch what
happened with the Lions and the Giants that they beating
each other up. It gets intense. It feels a little
bit like a preseason game. But I think these guys
should all play in the preseason. I think they're And
(45:07):
this is the way that if I was a head
coach in the NFL, this is how I would approach
the preseason.
Speaker 1 (45:12):
Every single star.
Speaker 3 (45:13):
Look at what the Chiefs are doing. I think Mahomes
playing whole quarter like they're playing everybody. Get these guys
a look, even if it's a series, how much can
your confidence really shatter on one series? Like I just
you're a quarterback in the NFL. It's your job to
lead the team down the field. If you are unsuccessful,
you go back to the sidelines, you reassess, and you
(45:35):
go do it again. And it just I don't know
why we're unless there is a serious injury concern, like
Justin Herbert are just injured himself. Okay, don't play in
the preseason, bro, I get that, But for a guy
like anyone else, really hold on.
Speaker 4 (45:49):
Let me pull up.
Speaker 3 (45:50):
I did a depth chart for all the quarterbacks and
I marked and read the guys are not playing in
the preseason. So no nice like Aaron Rodgers not playing
in the preseason, okay, coming off an injury, I get that.
Deshaun Watson not playing in the preseason, okay, injury. Maybe
Baker Mayfield, what's his excuse. He signed a big contract.
Speaker 4 (46:08):
They're trying to protect him. Get out there and play.
Speaker 3 (46:10):
You've got a new offensive coordinator, got a whole new
offense to go learn. Same thing with Gino Smith. He
got an injury. What's going on?
Speaker 4 (46:16):
Gino?
Speaker 3 (46:17):
Maybe he does, but again, what is the excuse for
these guys not playing? And how relevant isn't in the
injury scope, because if it's not an injury concern, get
these guys a series, go out there and hand the
ball off, get your feet wet. I don't understand why
we don't see more quarterbacks playing the preseason unless there's
an injury.
Speaker 2 (46:35):
Yeah, I outside of injury concern or nursing an injury.
Speaker 1 (46:40):
I just don't get it.
Speaker 2 (46:41):
Where let's say that the theories that you had rich
with Bryce Young, where hey man, he's still he's behind right,
work out the Kigs in preseason?
Speaker 3 (46:52):
What's the best way to catch up? Lips?
Speaker 2 (46:55):
I don't want it to be a weak one at
the Saints and that defense, you know what I mean.
If there's anything to work out, work it out in
a soft environment, which would be the first preseason game
against the Patriots, but they opted not to. I'll tell
you this too, if you compare Bryce Young to c J.
Stroud where they are going into year two, it could
(47:16):
not be more of a polar opposite situation. And this
really this might sound hyperbolic. I think it's on point.
I think the Bryce Young trade has the potential to
be the worst trade in NFL history. And I say
that knowing look at what the Cowboys did with the
Herschel Walker trade. I get all of that, But guys,
(47:38):
look at what CJ. Stroud is already, and look at
what Bryce Young isn't and look at what the Panthers
gave up to get him.
Speaker 4 (47:46):
I know they moved.
Speaker 3 (47:47):
They gave up.
Speaker 2 (47:48):
DJ Moore and all these draft picks to get Bryce Young,
who in year one was a dud. I'm not willing
to say that's all he's ever going to be. Time
will tell it's possible he is a dud. And it
sure looks like CJ. Stroud is a stud. And oh,
by the way, they traded what turned out to be
the number one pick in this year's draft. And if
(48:09):
Caleb Williams is the real deal with the Bears, it'll
make the Bryce Young deal look even worse. I'm telling
you that's got the potential to be the worst ever
in the NFL.
Speaker 5 (48:20):
Boy, I bet you right now the owner is wringing
his hands watching this these practices because if it's not
going well, right again, let's operate under the assumption it's
not going well for a second, and I'm not I
don't want to even forecast that because I hate it
for Bryce Young. But okay, so if we're gonna assume
(48:42):
it's not going well at camp, ringing his hands because
he has been the architect of some terrible decision making.
This is David Tepper since he's taken over the Carolina Panthers, right,
I mean, there's no leadership there. It's been a mixed
miss miss mash of different faces leading the organization. I
(49:03):
mean that's really the problem for the Carolina Panthers is
they are a faceless organization right now, Like, is it
leg it? Is he the star? Is it Bryce Young?
Do you want him to be the star? Is it
the hot offensive coordinator from the I mean, is it
Dave Canal's Do they have a face of the organization?
Yet the answer is no, you know, so there they
(49:26):
have an image problem. They like you said, this is
possibly one of the worst trades of all time. Again
operating under the assumption it's still not going well with Bryce.
So I don't mind this stemming back to the original
point you were making about the preseason, Brian, if you
have a situation where things are going poorly at training
(49:47):
camp with somebody who's supposed to be the face of
your organization. Why would you allow that to see the
night of day or the light of day.
Speaker 2 (49:55):
Why because it's going to see the light of day
under a greater spotlight.
Speaker 5 (49:59):
Week one, I get it, But give again, give yourself
some on ramp here, because let's not assume that Bryce
Young is going to be the same player right now.
You know, whatever today's date is August tenth, as he
will be at kickoff for the Carolina Panthers when the
regular season begins. And what happens if you know, you
spoil him, you know, you put him out there. He's
(50:20):
not ready yet. And by the way, I understand ready
or not. It's the NFL. But you can slow roll
certain things. You can make restaurants when they open that
they'll do a soft open where they invite friends and
family and people to come in and criticize them, but
you know, do it constructively, not tear them down and say,
oh my god, the kitchen was so slow and this,
(50:43):
and you know, I mean we didn't even have matching
silverware at our table. And the waiter, you know, his
tie was crooked. It's like, no, no, no, it's a
soft open. It's a soft open. Like let's get all
let's hammer out all the kings during the preseason while
we have time, and then let's unveil the menu when
the regular season begins. I think this may be the
(51:03):
smartest thing the Carolina Panthers can do right now is
protect if they have problems, protect them from seeing the
light of day until later on.
Speaker 3 (51:12):
I think I'm gonna take a little more of an
optimistic approach to the Panthers this year because I really
think last year was really bad. I think last year
you want to talk about soft opening. Last year started
one to ten. Frank Wright gets fired midseason. That I mean,
they had no offensive line, they had very little receiving group.
I mean Adam feln was there like number one receiver
for most of the year. They went out and added
(51:33):
Deontay Johnson, who is a deep threat, who is a
legitimate receiver, and of course you bring in Leggett in
the draft, so now feeling's your three. That and a big, big,
big change there now moving into this season. And then
you bring in Dave Canalis, who just made Baker Mayfield
look like the second coming of Joe Montana for a season.
(51:54):
And here's the stat I will give you about rookie
quarterbacks making the leap and why the coach is so important.
His first year in the league, Jared Goff, number one pick,
had a worse worse sufficiency rating than Bryce Young last
year under Jeff Fisher. And then the Rams hired Sean McVeigh.
(52:15):
And what did Jared Goff do the following year? He
was a top five quarterback. They went to the Super
Bowl very shortly after that. And I'm not saying that
Panthers are gonna go to the super Bowl because they
have a lot of holes on defense. Their defense is terrible.
Their defense compared to the Rams defense during that run
is night and day.
Speaker 1 (52:28):
Right, they don't have Aaron.
Speaker 3 (52:29):
Donald, but there is something about bringing in a brain
into the coaching room to help get the most out
of a very talent Like are we in debate still
that Bryce Young isn't talented number one pick Alabama National
Champion Heisman Trophy went like? He is still arguably one
(52:50):
of the most talented quarterbacks in our league. We just
haven't seen it yet because last year they drove the
truck off of a bridge and it just went down
into the into the river. It was a disaster last year.
I want to see I am reserving my judgment on
Carolina because I want to see what Dave can Allis
can do to Bryce Young, because I think there is
(53:11):
a leap in Bryce Young's game that we just haven't
seen yet, and I hope maybe they're saving it for
the regular season. I hope we see it or else.
My coach of the earpick might as well just use
it as toilet paper right.
Speaker 2 (53:23):
Now, right, Yeah, I do like at the beginning of
the show, how you threw Toledo under the bus. Right,
so we come back full circle. Shout out to our
technical producer Chris Purfett, because you mentioned Deontay Johnson, a
new receiver with the Panthers, Toledo product.
Speaker 5 (53:42):
Oh yeah, that's right, full circle.
Speaker 3 (53:46):
Right there you go.
Speaker 1 (53:48):
They're very nice.
Speaker 4 (53:49):
All right.
Speaker 2 (53:49):
We've got rich oron Berger, Penn State All American, Jared
Smith FSR betting analyst. I'm Brian no coming up next.
I don't understand the continued belief in this guy. It
is Fox Sports Saturday, right here on Fox Sports Radio.

quarterbacks not getting playing time in the preseason. Justin Field
Steelers quarterback got playing time in the preseason, and it's like,
no more playing time in the preseason.
Speaker 1 (54:51):
Please please, It's just it's an I sore over here.
Speaker 2 (54:54):
Two fumbled snaps last night against the Texans, got sacked
twice because he's just holding onto the ball, holding onto
the ball. It's like, get rid of it, get rid
of it. There's no quarterback clock sack. I don't understand
the hype train for Justin Fields.
Speaker 1 (55:11):
I really do know.
Speaker 2 (55:12):
There are still people saying he should be the quarterback.
He should be a Week one starter over Russell Wilson.
Justin Fields hasn't been good in three years in the NFL,
and I know he's got a lot of ability.
Speaker 3 (55:26):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (55:27):
He's a talented player who hasn't come close to putting
it together. And if you just look at what he's
done through three years, you can't blame all of that
on the Bears. Again, he couldn't take snaps last night,
and when you have DJ Moore and Cole Kmet as
weapons to throw to, you could do a whole lot worse.
(55:47):
That's at least enough to be better than he was.
And through three seasons, his quarterback rating is eighty two
point three just for reference, right, if you look at
last season two point three, that would get you in
the territory of scrolling down Desmond Ridder. I mean, that's
(56:07):
worse than d ridd last year. That's what Justin Fields
has done through three years in his NFL career. I
don't understand the misguided belief in this guy. He isn't
any good and I don't know why Paypall aren't saying
that there's still too much belief in him.
Speaker 1 (56:24):
I don't want to trash him, that's just the reality
of the situation.
Speaker 5 (56:27):
Well, I think he is uncomfortable learning a new system,
and I think we saw that with the Chicago Bears
the first time around. It was a very slow, you know,
to warm situation in Chicago with Justin Fields, and he
showcased some explosiveness.
Speaker 4 (56:46):
There's no question about it.
Speaker 5 (56:47):
He can make plays when the ball's in his hand
and you know, and he's not charged with throwing it
on time. That was the biggest concern with him early
and often throughout his Chicago Bear's career was you know,
he's really having a hard time processing at the NFL speed.
Now I agree with you, Brian, to a certain extent.
(57:08):
You can't place all the blame on Chicago because there's
now a common denominator here. But we also have to
do we have to do ourselves adjusted and not be
chained to the moment. You know, we have to do
justin a justice by not being chained to the moment.
Like we can't say for certain it's not going to
work out in Pittsburgh. We've literally seen him for one
(57:29):
game in the preseason and it was a rough.
Speaker 4 (57:31):
Outing for him.
Speaker 5 (57:32):
What I will say is this, it was automatically clear
that c J. Stroud could play in this league and
he's exceptional, I get it. But it was automatically clear
that Kyler Murray could play in this league. You know,
it was automatically clear that Trevor Lawrence could play in
this league. It was automatically clear that Justin Herbert could
(57:53):
play in this league. And the reason why I'm comparing
him to a mismash of names there is because I'm
picking out certain guys who were labeled as dual threat
quarterbacks coming out of college, who immediately it was very
clear that they could play.
Speaker 4 (58:07):
It this league. That's not justin fields. It's not justin fields.
Speaker 5 (58:11):
We're not sure, and we're still not sure, and if
the Pittsburgh Steelers have to rely on him this season,
we still may not be sure by the end of
this this season.
Speaker 4 (58:20):
But to your point, it's.
Speaker 5 (58:23):
Gonna become a lot clearer that maybe at best he's
going to be a second tier quarterback or potentially not
even a second tier quarterback.
Speaker 3 (58:30):
This is a rare situation where I can actually relate
to a playing a field playing story on the field.
So when I was a high school quarterback, my biggest
struggle was the center quarterback exchange. We had a center
who was a little bit you know, wonky with it
and everything was under center for the most part, and
I struggled with that a lot for majority of my career.
That's the reason why I didn't make it in the NFL. Right,
(58:52):
it couldn't get the quarterback exchange. That was the only
reason why I did not make it to the No,
I think there is a certain it's funny when you
say that and there actually is someone on the cold
plate center and play to the NFL, who can you
know rebute me? No, there, it's it's it's right, right, Rich.
It's a dual it's a dual responsibility. Like it's on
(59:15):
the quarterback and the quarterback gets most of the blame
when those things go wrong, but it's also on the
center as well. And to an extent, Tomlin did address
that after the game. He called it, I like this,
I'm gonna start using this the CQ exchange sounds like
some kind of fancy uh, some kind of fancy you
know stock that we're buying. I'm going to the CQ exchange.
You're gonna go buy this fancy stock. I want Justin
(59:36):
Fieldz to succeed. I just you're right, we haven't seen
it and and now he has to go to a
new situation, new new coordinator, new everything, and learn it
all again and and kind of get reacclimated. I do
think in terms of the mental struggles that players face,
I do think Mike Tomlin is, especially the quarterback face,
is the most or at least you know, the most
(59:57):
pressure from the.
Speaker 1 (59:58):
Outside any position in the league.
Speaker 3 (01:00:01):
I do think Mike Tomlin's really equipped to handle that
and to help Justin handle some of those struggles. But
at the end of the day, I think you said it, Brian,
you can either play or you can't like, and I
haven't seen it yet from Justin. We're still seeing a
lot of frantic I did write some notes because I
watched this full game. It was on NFL Network last night.
Speaker 1 (01:00:21):
Happy feet is.
Speaker 3 (01:00:22):
What I call it, in the pocket, very quick to
abandon the play like these are all things we've seen before.
Takes too many sacks, like these are all things that
were problems for him in Chicago. Do I think they're
all gonna get ironed out and one start in pretreseason. No,
It's obviously gonna take time. But we haven't seen improvements.
And I think at the level that Justin's playing and
what is this fifth.
Speaker 4 (01:00:42):
Year in the league.
Speaker 3 (01:00:43):
We need improvements, We need to see improvements, and we
haven't seen those improvements yet, so I hope we get them.
The fact that Russell Wilson is not going to play
in the preseason I think helps because I think Justin's
gonna get a ton of time and a ton of reps.
But we got to see some improvements at some point.
Speaker 1 (01:01:01):
Well yeah, And that's the thing.
Speaker 2 (01:01:02):
I always find it interesting when a guy like Justin Fields,
he's a great example. He's made some highlight reel plays
within his three years in the NFL, and some people
latch onto that, and they latch onto it too much,
and they think he's got more ability than he actually has.
(01:01:22):
Right Like, he has some ability and he's able to
especially when he's running the ball. He's a magician. He's
magical when he's running the ball. He is a pure athlete,
but in terms of throwing it with consistency and accuracy,
and he leaves a lot to be desired right there.
Speaker 1 (01:01:40):
And it's always.
Speaker 2 (01:01:41):
Interesting to me how some people will point the finger elsewhere.
Right They might see a couple of jaw dropping plays
from Justin Fields, and they'll immediately say, well, it's it's this,
it's it's the head coach, it's Eebraflus, it's it's the
offensive coordinator, it's it's just a lack of wide receiver.
And at some point you have to stop pointing the
(01:02:04):
finger at everybody, but justin Fields, you know what I mean, Like,
at some point you have to point the finger at
him and say DJ Moore and Cole Kimet are good enough,
the surrounding cast is good enough where he should be better,
especially in year four.
Speaker 1 (01:02:22):
Now, like we're is it too much to ask to
get the center? What was it? The c qanchine?
Speaker 3 (01:02:28):
That's odd? So I love it.
Speaker 2 (01:02:30):
No, that's not too much. So it's just funny to me.
And it's not just a Justin Fields thing. There are
some quarterbacks where the fingers are pointed all around them
instead of at them, And then there are other quarterbacks
where the fingers are pointed directly at them when maybe
it is smarter to point it around them. I'm fascinated
(01:02:51):
by the fact that some quarterbacks get the benefit of
the doubt and some don't. I think Justin Fields has
irrationally gotten the bed fitted the doubt because it's clear
three years in. It ain't just about what's not around him,
it's about him not bringing enough to the table.
Speaker 5 (01:03:09):
Also, I think that's probably a sign of the times also, Brian,
because there's been a sea change in the NFL. There
has been a change in the expectation for coaches in
the league to have more accountability than players at times.
Speaker 4 (01:03:27):
And I think it's more shared than that.
Speaker 5 (01:03:29):
But here's my example, Like things didn't go well for
part of a season with Frank Reich and Bryce Young,
they got rid of Frank Reich. He went from a
head coaching job with the Colts to a head coaching
job with the Carolina Panthers, and was it week nine,
week ten, week twelve when he got fired. I mean,
(01:03:49):
they didn't even give him a full season. With Bryce Young,
that is how short a leash a lot of these
coaches have with players. Because what's happened is you've seen
it many times over now in recent history, where a
player who's astoundingly talented at the college level jumps into
(01:04:10):
the NFL A La CJ. Stroud, you know, the the
quarterback DuJour who's made the acclamation and he's made it
look seamless. He's made it look easy at times, and
it's not. I promise you it's not. But there's a
lot of owners now who are impatient with their coaches
because you look over the fence and you say, well,
(01:04:30):
why is Damika Ryan's able to do this in Houston,
but we're not able to do this here in Carolina.
You're out of here, Frank, Well, guess what. It's harder
than that, you know, sometimes it takes the player.
Speaker 4 (01:04:41):
A couple of years.
Speaker 5 (01:04:42):
See Gino Smith for details. You know they wrote, but
iding right back, well, he had that season nine years
into his NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks. Now it
hasn't been great since that season. But my point being like,
this is a difficult game to figure out, and I
think for the first time in at least my football
(01:05:02):
watching life, we're seeing coaches get handed more of that
accountability to make sure they that these NFL teams are
reaping all the benefits of these players that these.
Speaker 4 (01:05:11):
College programs reaped.
Speaker 5 (01:05:13):
Now the NFL is more difficult, and I'm sure that
these NFL owners are aware of that, and sometimes they're
more patient than the owner in Carolina with their head
coach or their coaching staff.
Speaker 4 (01:05:24):
But there has been a sea change.
Speaker 5 (01:05:26):
I think these players are getting blamed a lot less,
and these coaches are being blamed more because we have
a much more accommodating nature at the NFL level, changing
offenses or defenses to match the specific talents and skills
of the player coming in, as opposed to trying to
force feed a new player. Hey, this is how things
(01:05:47):
are done here, and you're gonna be good. Otherwise you're
gonna be gone.
Speaker 4 (01:05:50):
Now.
Speaker 5 (01:05:51):
Owners are like, no, no, no, no. The players are
the valuable part. You make them work in our system.
Speaker 4 (01:05:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:05:57):
What Rich is referring to is a change in the
macro economic view of the NFL. And he's one hundred
percent right. The players are worth more today than they
were ten years ago, fifteen, twenty years ago. They're more
valuable today. The coaches are still valuable, but they're not
as valuable. There's no way the offensive coordinator on any
team gets paid as much as a quarterback or even
a top receiver. I mean it's not even close.
Speaker 1 (01:06:18):
The thing like CJ.
Speaker 3 (01:06:19):
Stroud fundamentally changed the way the higher ups in the
NFL view the ceiling of rookie quarterbacks, and it's unfortunate.
Because now everyone else after is gonna get graded on
that scale because CJ. Stroud has moved the needle that much.
And you can even take the rookie out of the
mix and just put young quarterbacks right on that first
(01:06:42):
contract to get the most out of that rookie contract.
You're now being graded against what Stroud did. What Stroud
did is even more impressive. Honestly, we should just change
this whole show to just CJ. Stroud love, because not
only are they playing him in preseason, he looked good
in preseason. But last year the Texans had the worst
(01:07:02):
injury luck in the NFL and they still won the
division with a rookie quarterback and a rookie head coach.
The offensive line was completely in tatters, they lost most
of their receiving corps at some point during the season,
they were without somebody. I mean, it was just a
laundry list of injuries for the Texans last year, and
they still had all that success because they still had CJ.
(01:07:25):
Stroud and he was able to overcome what has been
a really steep learning curve in the NFL for rookie quarterbacks.
Go back and watch the clips of the qbs in
the room with the giants and hard knocks. Reading back
those plays, you better study for a month. It's like
learning chemistry. It's really complicated and not everyone can do it.
(01:07:48):
There's a physical element to play in the position that
I understand, but the mental element to playing quarterback in
the NFL, now you have to be like a rocket
scientist almost to be able to decipher all this language.
I think what Mike Tomlin does is he provides accountability
for Justin Fields, but at the end of the day,
Justin Fields has to take that next step himself, and
if he doesn't, he's gonna get another second quarterback job
(01:08:10):
somewhere else, and then eventually he'll be probably taking one
of our jobs doing one of these shows.
Speaker 2 (01:08:14):
By the way, you know who the rocket scientist of
Fox Sports Radio is.
Speaker 1 (01:08:19):
I'll give you a hint.
Speaker 2 (01:08:20):
His name is Isaac lowand Troy, and he's got the
latest di Loo.
Speaker 1 (01:08:24):
What's going on, buddy.
Speaker 10 (01:08:26):
An experiment went wrong a couple of chemicals in my
rocket science trajectory calculations. Unfortunately, you'll be hearing alarm bells
within the next thirty seconds. So I'll try to make
it quick. Starting with NFL preseason action and Michael Pennix
Junior making his debut for the Atlanta Falcons. The rookie
quarterback completed nine of sixteen for one hundred and forty
(01:08:48):
yards in the Miami dolphins twenty to thirteen victory over
the Falcons. Philadelphia's Jake Elliott kicked the game winning forty
nine yard field goal at the Gun and their sixteen
to thirteen win at Baltimore. Russell Wilson did not play
in Pittsburgh's twenty to twelve loss to the Houston Texans
because of a calf injury.
Speaker 7 (01:09:06):
Justin Fields did.
Speaker 10 (01:09:06):
He completed five six passes for sixty seven yards. In
Major League Baseball on Friday night, Shohey O'tani hit his
thirty fifth home run in the Los Angeles Dodgers nine
to five win over the Pittsburgh Pirates and in the
Arizona Diamondbacks three to two victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Arizona's Adrian del Castillo hit the game winning home run
in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was the
(01:09:27):
first home run of his career in the second game
of his career, coming up at the top of the hour.
At the Olympics, the Gold medal match in women's soccer
between Team USA and Brazil and finally fellas in yesterday's
gold medal match in women's beach volleyball, the players from
Canada and Brazil got into a heated argument at the net. Suddenly,
(01:09:51):
the DJ at the venue began playing the song Imagine
by John Lennon, and that stopped the argument dead in
its tracks, leaving the players and fans smiling and laughing.
Speaker 7 (01:10:07):
Listen to this.
Speaker 10 (01:10:07):
The first thing you're gonna hear is the players arguing
and the referee desperately trying to stop the argument when
Imagine kicks in on the PA system.
Speaker 7 (01:10:16):
Listen.
Speaker 10 (01:10:17):
Brazil wound up winning the match, but the real winner
was peace.
Speaker 7 (01:10:21):
Back to you, guys.
Speaker 2 (01:10:23):
I gotta wonder if they played Raining Blood from Slayer,
what would.
Speaker 4 (01:10:27):
Have happened there?
Speaker 2 (01:10:28):
You know, I.
Speaker 1 (01:10:30):
J yeah, it might have been a different outcome.
Speaker 2 (01:10:32):
It is Fox Sports Saturday, right here on Fox Sports Radio.
I gotta tell you, guys, I'm already not a fan
of something in the NFL. Okay, I was watching a
little bit of the Dolphins preseason game last night the
Hawkeye Technology.
Speaker 3 (01:10:46):
Oh this was on last night.
Speaker 4 (01:10:47):
I didn't notice you.
Speaker 2 (01:10:48):
Yeah, it was one of the select games that had
the old Hawkeye latest technology, So it's basically replacing the
chain game, right where it's the tennis type thing where
it's got a bunch of cameras and you can calibrate
if it's a first down or not. So the thing
(01:11:08):
is it was a close play, right, that's why there's
a measurement or a Hawkeye review if you will. And
the officials just stand around like idiots. They're like, all right, uh,
just waiting for the hawk guy technology to do its thing,
I guess. And then they show it and it's a
first down and the Falcons challenged it. They're like, but wait,
(01:11:30):
we think the guy's knee was down or he was
out of bounds before he got the first down.
Speaker 1 (01:11:34):
Turns out the.
Speaker 3 (01:11:35):
Falcons were lenge Hawkey. I thought Hawkeye was the challenge.
Speaker 2 (01:11:38):
But that's a whole point, right, Like it just shows
you where the ball is spotted if it's a first
down or not. But there's something else to be worked out,
like where should the ball actually be spots.
Speaker 5 (01:11:49):
Which is a disaster already, right, yeah, so I hate
it already.
Speaker 2 (01:11:54):
It's not tennis, you know, it's is it in or out?
It isn't like this other part of the did he
step out of bounds before ahead? I hate it. I
don't like it at all. Leave the chain gang it
was fine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Speaker 5 (01:12:09):
Yeah, one hundred percent. Look, here's the deal. I do
appreciate change. I think it's inevitable. However, much like the
kickoff rule, much like the new technologies that are being rolled.
Speaker 4 (01:12:22):
Out, change can feel really.
Speaker 5 (01:12:24):
Clunky sometimes, and if it doesn't improve things like automatically immediately.
Speaker 4 (01:12:31):
I hope, I hope the thought.
Speaker 5 (01:12:34):
Is, Okay, we're gonna stick with this as long as
we can until we decide it ain't working anymore. So
I hope the same thing with the technology is the
same thing with the kickoff. If it isn't working, let's
get away from it and let's do it quicker. I
don't understand why we have to slock through a full
season of some of these changes. Is there any way
(01:12:54):
where just because you committed to something in the preseason
and you had a competition committee or decision makers in
the league make these decisions in the preseason, does it.
Speaker 4 (01:13:04):
Have to stick the entire year.
Speaker 5 (01:13:07):
That's my one complaint with some of these leagues, not
all of them, but some of these leagues with some
of the changes they make.
Speaker 3 (01:13:14):
Yeah, I didn't know that this was gonna be in
that game last night. I would have paid a lot
more closer attention to it because I was interested to
see how this would play out.
Speaker 1 (01:13:23):
And my hope was.
Speaker 3 (01:13:25):
Is that it would be seamless, is that there would
be kind of like tennis. Right, there's a bit of
a you know, confusion about where the ball was in
or out. Everyone pauses for a minute, they look at
the screen, you see the little graphic and with an
animation like boom, it's awesome.
Speaker 8 (01:13:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:13:41):
No, I honestly think it is the best replay system
we have in sports today. Yep, it honestly is. It's
just it's quick, it's seamless. The video is on the screen.
You could see it plainly. There is no debate, there's
no like arguments on whether or not the ball was
in or out like it is on the screen. You
can see the shadow of the ball. Now, the one
(01:14:02):
pushback I have is the shadows like a little elongated
in like a weird way. And I guess that's just
like how the ball hits like physics. I guess this
move is so fast. Yeah, yeah, it must be a
physics thing. The question I had here was about what
you said, Brian, it's not where the ball is just
in general, it's where the ball is when the play
(01:14:23):
happens at its apex right knee down feed out. If
there now is a second layer of encryption that is
needed to decipher this code, oh my goodness, gracious, it
is going to be a train wreck this year. And
I agree there are some parts to the chain gang
that I struggle with, but at least at the end
(01:14:44):
of the day we do get the end result, albeit
margin of error included. Now we have another layer. You're saying,
even after they do the hawkeye, there's still another like
challenge that can still happen. Oh, this is gonna be bad.
Speaker 4 (01:14:57):
This is gonna be bad. I don't like it.
Speaker 2 (01:14:59):
By the way, I love like with Wimbledon when they
show the tennis replay, they actually have on the graphic
like a couple of blades of grass that kind.
Speaker 3 (01:15:08):
Of like flitterers the round at it. They're so good
at it, so it's perfect.
Speaker 2 (01:15:13):
Have we got Rich Rodberger, Penn State All American, Jared
Smith FSR Betting analyst.
Speaker 1 (01:15:18):
I'm Brian though.
Speaker 2 (01:15:19):
Coming up next, I've got a bet that you might hate,
but it's gonna cash.
Speaker 1 (01:15:24):
All Right, we get into prop.
Speaker 2 (01:15:26):
It up right around the corner our bonding time of
the show. It is Fox Sports Saturday, right here on
Fox Sports Radio. It is Fox Sports Saturday, right here
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:15:38):
It is time for the bonding portion of the show.
Speaker 2 (01:15:42):
Let's dive into this prop it up. Ah, we love
the prop bet market. We'll start with you, Jared, what
are you thinking?
Speaker 4 (01:15:52):
Well?
Speaker 3 (01:15:53):
Enjoy you guys, about two more weeks of baseball prop
bets to infiltrate your airwaves here until we make the
full transitional foot I'm kind of getting away from the
nurfy yurfee stuff. It's just been so much work and
I really have to focus on the real football coming
up soon, right, So, but I'll give you a couple
of baseball props and pitcher props today that I like.
I like Justin Steele's strikeout over it said at five
and a half right now, based on the White Sox today,
(01:16:15):
I think it's a relatively soft number, considering the White
Sox are also very soft. They strike out at the
sixth highest rate the lefties this year. I think Steele
is gonna see this White Sox team for the first
time this year, which is always advantage Hitcher first time through.
And I again, six innings very average for Justin Steel.
One strikeout per inning is something I definitely see today.
(01:16:36):
So over five and a half makes a ton of sense.
Speaker 4 (01:16:39):
Man, that's great stuff.
Speaker 5 (01:16:40):
Listen, I circle back to me because I have some
interesting thoughts on what.
Speaker 4 (01:16:45):
We may see today in the Olympics.
Speaker 2 (01:16:48):
Oh wow, okay, yeah, all right, all right, okay, I'll
take it from here. This is kind of like the
men's relay team, right, We're plucky EXE between me and
years right rich, Like, listen, I can't quite get the baton,
you know.
Speaker 5 (01:17:04):
It was a rain slicked baton, and I just I
wanted to hand it off smoother, but I wanted to
stretch my legs a little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:17:12):
So yeah, take it from your power.
Speaker 1 (01:17:13):
Hey, all good.
Speaker 2 (01:17:14):
So I'm looking at the This might be more back
to the futures, but I don't care.
Speaker 1 (01:17:20):
It still works with prop it up as well.
Speaker 2 (01:17:22):
I'm looking at a season prop for an NFL quarterback. Okay,
the lowest passing yardage prop that offered for the season
is with Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. We're talking at bet
MGM two thousand, six hundred and seventy five and a
half yards twenty.
Speaker 1 (01:17:44):
Six seventy five.
Speaker 2 (01:17:46):
This is a gift from the gambling gods over here.
This is the ultimate by Low Territory. Daniel Jones isn't
very good and he was injured last season, right season
ending injury. He had the neck injury early on at
toward ACL. I doubt lightning strikes again back to back
seasons where.
Speaker 1 (01:18:05):
It's a season ending injury.
Speaker 2 (01:18:08):
And I also think that because if you look at
what he did as a rookie, he threw for three
thousand yards and twelve starts as a rookie quarterback. I'm
not telling you Daniel Jones is any good, but I'm
telling you he's not that bad to get to twenty
seven hundred yards passing in today's NFL. They're not benching
(01:18:28):
him for Drew Locke, you know, they're not benching him
for Tommy Cutlets, Tommy DeVito.
Speaker 7 (01:18:34):
Right.
Speaker 2 (01:18:35):
This is a This is from the Giants preseason game.
What Carl Banks said on the telecast, Drew.
Speaker 11 (01:18:41):
Locke is a guy Kiel that the coach said he
will rip it in there.
Speaker 4 (01:18:45):
But he ripped it in there and he threw it
into a team.
Speaker 7 (01:18:48):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (01:18:49):
That was on Fox New York. He threw up really
terrible interception.
Speaker 2 (01:18:54):
So Daniel Jones is the guy and he's not getting benched.
I doubt he goes down with this. He's an ending injury.
Twenty seven hundred yards? That what's the interceptions number.
Speaker 1 (01:19:04):
For Daniel Jones.
Speaker 2 (01:19:05):
After hearing that clip, God, I'll have to take back
on that way, but I got the over on the yards.
Speaker 1 (01:19:11):
We're back to you, Rich.
Speaker 4 (01:19:12):
I know what.
Speaker 5 (01:19:14):
I wanted more time to make sure. I wanted to
say this. I got a bad feeling. Oh no, I'm
taking under fourteen and a half on Lebron. I'm taking
under fourteen and a half on Kevin Durant.
Speaker 4 (01:19:28):
Points score tonight. I think this is going to be
an outside shooting game.
Speaker 5 (01:19:33):
I think Victor Webbin Yama is going to control the
paint well for Team France, and I.
Speaker 4 (01:19:37):
Do not have a good feeling about goal. So there
it is.
Speaker 5 (01:19:41):
I think this may be a lower scoring game for
some of your stars on Team USA. Maybe I'll change
over the last hour, but there, that's where I'm at
with player props.
Speaker 3 (01:19:51):
Here go Brian Daniel Jones fifty to one to lead
the league in interceptions.
Speaker 4 (01:19:55):
What do you think? Fifty to one?
Speaker 3 (01:19:57):
Fifth?
Speaker 4 (01:19:57):
Fifty to one.
Speaker 1 (01:19:58):
He doesn't throw a ton of hicks though, that's the thing.
Speaker 4 (01:20:01):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:20:02):
I like him over his passing.
Speaker 2 (01:20:04):
Yardage prop All right, coming up next? Why is this
guy still employed? So there was an interesting piece that
came out on ESPN this week about the Eagles. Right,
this is from Tim McManus and Jeremy Fowler, and it's
entitled Inside the Disconnect between Eagles coach Nick Sirianni and
(01:20:26):
quarterback Jalen Hurts, and in it our bunch of details
numerous sources with direct knowledge saying the relationship was fractured
in unhealthy last season. Here's the thing, guys, this is
what I'm thinking. Why is Nick Sirianni still the head
coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. You know, the team absolutely
(01:20:49):
collapsed last season, lost six of seven. Firing defensive coordinator
Sean Deci midway through the season and hiring Matt Patricia
was a disaster. That's Sirianni's fingerprints are all over that thing.
Philly got clabbered by Tampa thirty two to nine in
the wild card round. And on top of that, Sirianni
(01:21:11):
and Hurts aren't even getting along. Really, this is an
audio smoochacho situation over here with Philadelphia. Now, they discussed
hiring Bill Belichick and they ultimately decided to stick with Sirianni.
Speaker 1 (01:21:26):
If you have a chance to get.
Speaker 2 (01:21:27):
Belichick, you do it all day long instead of running
it back with Sirianni. And I know some people will say, well,
they made it to a super Bowl last year. Yeah,
Doug Peterson won a super Bowl in Philly and was
fired shortly after that. Things changed quickly in the NFL,
and if you have a chance to upgrade, you could
(01:21:48):
play the same game personnel wise. You could say, hey,
we just got to a super Bowl and Hassan Reddick
was a big part of this, and it's like he's
not there anymore.
Speaker 1 (01:21:57):
You know, they make personnel changes all the time.
Speaker 2 (01:22:00):
So if I look at Nick Sirianni and I compare
him to Bill Belichick coaching wise, if you could convince
Belichick that Howie Roseman is the GM, he runs the show.
Personnel wise, you coach the team. If you could convince
him to do that it's a football crime not to
have him in the building right now.
Speaker 5 (01:22:19):
Yeah, yeah, Well, listen, I don't disagree with you about
Bill Belichick.
Speaker 4 (01:22:23):
I think it's almost malpractice that he's not coaching this year.
Speaker 5 (01:22:28):
But you know, I guess I'll move on from there
to discuss Sirianni and his tenure with the Eagles, which
I would label as ten you us, I mean, he doesn't.
The clock is ticking loudly in the background. And here's
the problem for the Eagles. His players know it. When
you have a situation where a coach was on the
(01:22:50):
hot seat, that it was publicly known that his job
was for sale, if the right gentleman caller came by,
you know, and the right amount of money, you know,
made himself available to take his job, Like if Bill
Belichick was willing to sign maybe a smaller contract, I'm
(01:23:10):
sure the Philadelphia Eagles would have jumped out the opportunity.
My guess is a lot of the reason why Bill
doesn't have a job is because he wasn't going to
coach unless he had ultimate control of the roster and
all decision making and then could be your head coach.
He wasn't gonna accept an assistant job, and also that
he was going to be paid as handsomely as he
(01:23:33):
was getting paid in New England to do it. And
so it's not like the Eagles missed out because they
have another bite at that apple this upcoming offseason, because
Bill Belichick is still a free agent. So I don't
look at that as being as big of a problem
for the Eagles.
Speaker 4 (01:23:49):
Here's what I'll say about Nick Sirianni.
Speaker 5 (01:23:51):
And this is a guy I know personally who was
one of my coaches in San Diego when.
Speaker 4 (01:23:57):
The Chargers were still in San Diego and I was
still in playing football. He's he's a great people person.
Speaker 5 (01:24:03):
He's a good speaker, he's a good motivator's he's the
type of.
Speaker 4 (01:24:07):
Person who will win you over in the room.
Speaker 5 (01:24:10):
And you got to remember, there's only thirty two of
these jobs, and he was able to commence in an
organization that he was the right man for one of
these jobs. And so he probably met with the owner,
the front office with Roseman and Laurie, and he sat
down and said and pitched himself or repitched himself as
(01:24:31):
the reason why the Eagles are gonna have success now
and into the future. And They're gonna give him a
short leash to do that. This could be one of
those mid season firings, or this could be one of
the stories because we know the Eagles are a talented roster.
Where come the end of the season, we go, Oh,
the best thing the Eagles ever did was kept Nick Xiiani.
Speaker 4 (01:24:53):
Look how well he's leading this team. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:24:56):
I read that story. It was really well written. I
thought it really did a good job source things. I
know the anonymous sources aren't great, but at least it
gave us some sort of an insight into what was
happening last year in Philly, which is a really It
was interesting because I think the talent didn't match the
output of what we got on the field and between
(01:25:17):
the years. Obviously this was a maturity thing. This wasn't
a talent problem. I think Nick Sirianni, you take out
all of the distractions and a little bit of the immaturity.
Speaker 1 (01:25:27):
I think he is one of the best coaches in
this league.
Speaker 3 (01:25:29):
I think he is more suited at this stage to
coach the Eagles than Bill Belichick would have been. I do,
I honestly do, and I think the situation that needed
to happen was Nick needed to grow up and he's
only four.
Speaker 1 (01:25:44):
Again, in terms of NFL coaching, he's pretty young.
Speaker 3 (01:25:47):
So he had a lot of success early, and this
happens a lot in life. You're young, relatively speaking to
the rest of your peers. He's a younger head coach.
He has the success very early right away, and then
we don't get that the second year, Right, you take
a step backwards. Well, why did they take a step
backwards where the players worse?
Speaker 1 (01:26:07):
No seam was the same.
Speaker 3 (01:26:09):
It was the scheme, it was the defense, it was
the behind the scenes, it was the coaching quarterback dilemma.
How much is too much in terms of hands on? Well,
the offensive coordinator situation last year was bad. They brought
in I think one of the brightest offensive minds we
have in this sport, Kellen Moore. Everything I'm reading in
that article and everything I'm hearing from training camp, he
(01:26:31):
is much more hands off Nick Sirianni is this year
with the offense, Kellen Moore is running the show. The
defensive side is intriguing because Fangio, from what I understand,
his scheme does take some time to kind of absorb.
So how quickly will the Eagles be able to start defensively.
I think when the year begins, we're gonna have more
questions about the Eagles defense than the offense going forward,
(01:26:53):
and as the season progresses, I think both units will
get in sync, and not justin Timberlake in sync, like
in sync. I honestly believe that that keeping Sirianni was
the best decision possible for this Eagles team, because again,
I don't think it's talent or its brain power. I
think it's just maturity and growing up on the job.
(01:27:15):
And I think Jalen hurts a Nick Sirianni needed to
have a kumbaya. They needed to come together, They needed
to make some changes in the coordinator rooms. They made
those changes and everything has been positive. Like you take
away some of those inefficiencies last year on the on
the sidelines were the Eagles not a Super Bowl contender
like the whole season and the collapse was very surprising
(01:27:36):
and calamitous. If they get back to that level this year,
we're not gonna be talking about Nick Sirianni not having
a job. We're gonna be talking about, Wow, can you
believe they almost fired Nick Sirianni.
Speaker 2 (01:27:46):
I mean, look, if if you're dating a girl and
she's okay, she's all right, she leaves something to be desired,
and you get a chance to date a supermodel, it
makes no sense to be like, yeah, but I think
we can turn the corner together, you know what I mean.
I'm gonna stick with my current relationship. It's like, I
(01:28:08):
get it if you've got a great relationship and a
great thing going, but if you've got a chance to upgrade,
you do it. And Nick Sirianni this guy, I just
don't see how you lose six of seven games. You're
butting heads with the quarterback, and it's like, nah, let's
not pursue Bill Belichick. And the other thing is I'm
(01:28:30):
gonna get too far in the weeds with this. But
I think some of it we're just anticipating that he
has to have personnel control. He told Arthur Blank with
the Falcons job that he was interviewing for that he
was willing to work with the GM Terry Fontina, And
so it's like he wouldn't be willing to work with
Howie Roseman if he was offered.
Speaker 1 (01:28:48):
That job, He'd be out of his mind not to
work with that. This could be his Tom Brady moment.
Speaker 2 (01:28:54):
Think about Tom Brady going to Tampa and winning a
Super Bowl, how much that did for his legacy. If
Belichick went to Philly or elsewhere and won a Super Bowl,
that would be huge for his legacy. Winning without Tom Brady,
he'd be out of his mind to say no to
the Eagles because he's gotta have full control over personnel matters.
(01:29:16):
I just don't think he's that dumb.
Speaker 5 (01:29:17):
Hang on, hang on though, having having having a statement
out there like that is very Bill Belichick friendly.
Speaker 4 (01:29:25):
Right, Yeah, I'm willing to work with font and I would.
Speaker 3 (01:29:28):
Have loved to work with and they were really get
the job, and it's like, hey, go away, Terry, I
want to Yeah, here.
Speaker 5 (01:29:35):
Arthur, I just I'm gonna sign this part of this
contract and you signed the other side of it. And
somewhere in the the finer print it says I do
have last say on the roster, but I will.
Speaker 4 (01:29:46):
Work with these guys.
Speaker 1 (01:29:47):
I can see that with fun though.
Speaker 2 (01:29:48):
But like Howie Roseman and a proven track records, Yes,
for many years, morn to be like Nope, nope, look
at what I've done with all the gaffes and personnel decisions.
Speaker 4 (01:30:02):
I personally think it it came down to money.
Speaker 5 (01:30:04):
I think like, like, let's always trace it back to money,
because I think that's what this was. I think given
his age, and for some of these teams, they were
thinking to themselves like, goodness, gracious, like we want to
know that we're going to have a head coach for
us basically as long as we need him for and
I don't think.
Speaker 4 (01:30:23):
You're awarded that with Belichick.
Speaker 5 (01:30:25):
And also the amount of money that he was demanding,
a lot of these owners are looking at it saying, Okay,
you know what do we get out of Bill three years,
maybe four years more, who knows how long he really
wants coach, and then we're gonna pay him a boatload
of money and it's not even a guarantee it's gonna work,
you know. So it's a tricky situation. But going back
to Sirianni, look, this is a fiery guy. That's part
(01:30:49):
of the reason why I won the job in the
first place. And I said that correctly won the job
because you're in stiff competition when you are interviewing for
one of these very coveted positions in the NFL, and
they don't just give him to anybody, And so look,
there was a belief when they hired him, even though
he was really green. You remember that opening press conference.
(01:31:11):
It was a disaster. He was really green, but they
saw something in him that was different from that separated
him from the rest of the pack. And much like Roseman,
it's a shorter menu, But Nick Siriani's got a proven
track record too. What happened at the end of last
season is either a bell weather for things to come,
(01:31:32):
or it's an aberrant exception that we're going to move
on from. And it's going to seem like a distant
memory if this team is eight and two heading into
week eleven, right, but who knows?
Speaker 4 (01:31:46):
We don't know yet.
Speaker 5 (01:31:48):
And if he's lost Jalen Hurts, if he's lost his trust,
then it's gonna be a problem for the Eagles. But
my guess is he hasn't. Just knowing him again, I
have a personal relationship with the guy. I don't think
he's the type of person who is even capable of
burning a bridge with a quarterback. I'm sure they butt
(01:32:11):
heads a lot, but I don't think. I don't think
he's the type of person who is gonna is going
to sacrifice a relationship with the most important human being
in the entire organization out of pride.
Speaker 4 (01:32:23):
I just don't think he's that stupid.
Speaker 3 (01:32:26):
Yeah, Rich, I think the way you framed it, with
the present in the future being kind of part of
this equation makes a lot of sense to me. If
you're hiring Bill Belichick, you want to win a Super
Bowl this year and you have no idea what's gonna
happen next year. When you're staying with Nick Sirianni, he's
forty three years old, you have the chance to build
(01:32:47):
something great twenty years with the same coach. It doesn't
happen often in the NFL. Usually it's three or four
years and we're on to the next And we're on
year three now with Sirianni. And I think this was
a big corner turn for the Eagles as a franchise
because I trust Howie Roseman. I think he's one of
the best minds, you know, organizing teams that we have
(01:33:09):
in the sport today. And I think he made a
decision do I bail and cut bait now and go
for the hot And I don't want to call Belichick
a trend, but like everyone wanted to cash in on
Bill Belichick being available. Can we ring the cash register
this year, get this guy in our system and win
a Super Bowl right now, and then in three years
(01:33:30):
we're on to the next coach because Bill's not going
to be around. Or do we want to build something
slow where there are ups and downs? And let's be honest,
the Eagles have experienced both so far, ups and downs.
Do we want to continue to put another brick on
the wall and keep putting bricks on the wall by
(01:33:50):
building around Nick and getting him a coordinator room that
has some maturity and some scheme to it with the
talent already in tow And do you want to keep
building or do you want to rip it all down
and start from scratch? And I think we have this
tendency you can blame Tinder and swipe society where we
just want to go to the next, swipe, next, next,
(01:34:13):
Whereas I do think there is value in going through
some hard times with some coaches and some players and
experiencing that trauma together. The hottest fire forges the strongest steal.
Speaker 4 (01:34:26):
I think the.
Speaker 3 (01:34:27):
Eagles got stronger last year because of what they went
through and continuing to keep that nucleus in place the
next year instead of just bailing and jumping ship and
going to Bill Belichick is gonna be there for two
years and then he's.
Speaker 4 (01:34:39):
Gone to me.
Speaker 3 (01:34:40):
I value that patience that Howie Roseman is having in
this situation, and I think it will pay off because
the talent is there. It is there in Philly. Jalen
Hurts is an MVP caliber quarterback. He just needs the
right people pushing the buttons behind him. And I think
those the ready player one, you know, controller got put
into someone's smart hands this year with Kellen Moore because
(01:35:04):
the brains left town when Stikeing and Gannon bolted. I mean,
those were the smartest guys in that room, the most
mature guys in that room, and now they have to recalibrate.
But if you throw out Sirianni, then you gotta start
a completely from scratch, and it just I felt like
it would have been the wrong decision. I applaught Alie
Rosen for sticking with Sirianni this year, and I do
(01:35:24):
think that patience will be rewarded.
Speaker 2 (01:35:25):
I don't at all, couldn't disagree more. He's a clown.
It was a bad move, Like, here's the thing, Sirianni, Like,
this is the introductory press conference that you're talking about. Rich,
I'm not keeping this guy with all that. That is
one of the most talented rosters in the league to
lose six of seven, to get punked by Tampa the
way they did, Like, you should be more than the
(01:35:46):
strength of your coordinators. I totally agree that when the
coordinators left town, when you saw Stike and get the
head job and Indie and Right, and all of a sudden,
you're like, wow, Sirianni looks completely different. Yeah, because he's
not good. He's not good at what he does, and
he sounded like it when he first got the job.
Speaker 6 (01:36:04):
The first part of being smart is knowing what to do.
We're gonna we're gonna know. We're gonna have systems in
place that are easier to learn, all right, complicated to
the defense or offense that they're going against, or the
special teams group they're going against, but easy for us
to learn. Because when we can put that because we
when we can learn our system and we can get
(01:36:25):
good at our system, then our talent can take over.
Less thinking equals talent takeover. But we need to have
systems in place, and we will have systems in place
to do so.
Speaker 2 (01:36:36):
Yeah, okay, all right, Nick, but listen, it was after
that year.
Speaker 5 (01:36:44):
I understand that was terrible delivery, and I I did
agree at the time. I'm like, man, I mean, look,
Nick Siriana, he's Nick Sirian. He's one of my guys.
I like him, I really do. I think I think
he's He's What happened in that press conference is what
happens to a lot of people when experience and and
(01:37:08):
talent meets opportunity, but you don't have all of the
finer points hammered down perfectly.
Speaker 4 (01:37:16):
Yet he was nervous.
Speaker 1 (01:37:17):
Problem. Yeah he was your press conference right, is downgrade.
Speaker 3 (01:37:20):
The the UCLA guy because of that too?
Speaker 4 (01:37:22):
Are we gonna like? It's like the garage band going
big time? You know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (01:37:27):
It's like when they're playing shows in front of their
friends at bars.
Speaker 4 (01:37:32):
It's like, yeah, that's that's one thing.
Speaker 5 (01:37:34):
But then all of a sudden, when you're out on stage,
you know, you have a headliner like the Foo Fighters,
you're opening for in front of a stadium crowd, all
of a sudden, your your knees start shaking, your all
the confidence in the bravado that got you to that moment,
it gets swallowed up by your nerves, and so I
think I think that was a poor representation of who
(01:37:56):
he ended up becoming as a head coach.
Speaker 4 (01:37:58):
And I also think that.
Speaker 5 (01:38:00):
If you're gonna judge him by those six games only
at the end of the last season, last season where
they slid a little bit, I think that's that's foolish too.
Speaker 4 (01:38:09):
There is I don't. I don't.
Speaker 5 (01:38:10):
There's a there's a white swath of really good experiences
in the middle that you should evaluate and say, Okay,
so how do we get back to that?
Speaker 4 (01:38:19):
Because that was the majority of it was really good
with Sirianni.
Speaker 2 (01:38:22):
Look, it's a blend. It's not just hey, they faded,
get rid of him. It's hey, they faded, get rid
of him, because you have a chance to upgrade with
arguably the greatest head coach to ever do it right. Like,
that's the thing you're mentioning bands. If you have your
band and it's you know, fledgling, and your singer is okay,
and you've got a chance to get James Hetfield from Metallica,
(01:38:44):
he's like, I want a new project over here, you'd
be out of your mind not to do that.
Speaker 5 (01:38:50):
I get it, but still like that's a great example
because James Hetfield too is look in terms of his
musical career, I wouldn't buy too many green because he's
not gonna get to see them ripens. It's like he's
he's got a lot more yesterday's log than tomorrow's. So
you could either hire your Metallica's front man to be
(01:39:10):
your front man for what the next two or three years?
Speaker 3 (01:39:13):
For one show? Yeah, for you get a whole tour
with Sirianni.
Speaker 1 (01:39:17):
Yeah yeah, I'll take to one show better.
Speaker 4 (01:39:20):
Than the tour.
Speaker 3 (01:39:21):
But I think the question is I think the pushback
I have on the take that Belichick in, He's like,
what if it doesn't work out, then you're right back
where you started the next year and you are down.
Like to me, I'm I like building. I think we're
too quick to move on from these coaches. I know
the NFL stands for not for long, but sometimes it's crazy.
(01:39:43):
We'll get into this. We're gonna have a lot more
discussions on Sirianni. I'm fascinated how it starts and how
the defense kind of molds around Fangio. But I'm telling
you we might look back in six months and be like, wow,
can you believe they almost fired Nick Sirianni right before
the Eagles won the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (01:39:57):
I have no problem with huge swings. Take huge swings.
If you huge, If you swing huge and and don't
hit it going with Bill Belichick, I can live with it.
Speaker 4 (01:40:06):
But why do I.
Speaker 1 (01:40:07):
Get you're trying to sacrifice this.
Speaker 2 (01:40:10):
Sounds that's two week it's a it's it's the safe
move to a fault to run it back. With all
this being said, they'll probably get back on the tracks.
He'll be Coach of the Year. I'll look like a moron,
you know, the.
Speaker 3 (01:40:22):
Way it'll all work out.
Speaker 2 (01:40:23):
Definitely, he's not winning Coach the All right, Uh, We've
got rich Ron Berger, Penn State All American, Chared Smith
FSR betting analyst, I'm Brian No coming up next. There's lying,
and then there's what this guy is doing. It's Fox
Sports Saturday, right here on Fox Sports Radio. It is

Okay, So clock integrity, it's a big.
Speaker 4 (01:41:36):
Thing in radio. We're terrible at it.
Speaker 3 (01:41:41):
I'll do yeah, well, I'll take the accountability for this one, guys,
I apologize.
Speaker 1 (01:41:44):
We're three gas.
Speaker 2 (01:41:45):
Bags over here, you know therevery now. And then clock
integrity leaves a little bit to be desired. So we
get right back on track over here as we throw
it to Isaac Low and Crown first, and then we
will get to a dirty scoundrel liar in a second.
Speaker 1 (01:42:01):
The first opposite in Isaac lowand.
Speaker 7 (01:42:04):
I appreciate you. Appreciate you qualifying that.
Speaker 10 (01:42:08):
We are half an hour into the women's soccer gold
medal match at the Olympics between Team USA and Brazil,
and it has been a hair raiser so far, with
great chances at both ends. Brazil actually scored a goal
in the sixteenth minute, but it was wiped out because
of offside, so again Team USA and Brazil scoreless in
(01:42:30):
the thirtieth minute in the gold medal match in women's soccer.
Coming up at three thirty Eastern time today, it's the
gold medal game in men's basketball between Team USA and France.
In NFL preseason action on Friday night, the Miami Dolphins
defeated the Atlanta Falcons twenty to thirteen. Atlanta rookie quarterback
Michael Petticks junior completed nine of sixteen for one hundred
(01:42:51):
and four yards. The Houston Texans won at Pittsburgh twenty
to twelve. Russell Wilson of the Steelers did not play
because of a calf injury. Justin Fields, however, complete did
five six passes for sixty seven yards and Jake Elliott's
forty nine yard field goal at the gun gave the
Philadelphia Eagles sixteen to thirteen victory at Baltimore in Major
League Baseball On Friday Night Show, Hey O'tani hit his
(01:43:14):
thirty fifth home run in the Dodgers nine to five
win over the Pirates and the Diamondbacks best of the
Phillies three to two. Adrian del Castillo the game winning
home run to win it in the second game of
his major league career.
Speaker 7 (01:43:28):
Fellas back to you, thank.
Speaker 4 (01:43:30):
You, I Lo.
Speaker 2 (01:43:30):
It is Fox Sports Saturday right here on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:43:33):
So our guy, Jim Harbaugh, oh boy hoof.
Speaker 2 (01:43:38):
So he has accepted this is great timing, accepted an
invitation to be an honorary captain for Michigan's home opener
against Fresno State.
Speaker 3 (01:43:48):
That's at the end of this month.
Speaker 2 (01:43:50):
So yeah, there's a bed a few things that have
transpired over the last week with Jim Harbaugh here. So
he was hit with the show penalty because of improper
recruiting during COVID. So basically he's not going to be
a college football head coach for the next four years.
(01:44:10):
So weird penalty because he probably wasn't going to be anyway. Right,
he's the Chargers head coach, right now so weird punishment.
But also what happened was that you had seven members
of the twenty twenty three Michigan football program be accused
by the violating NCAA rules, Like with the sign stealing
(01:44:33):
situation over there. Sharon Moore, the new head coach, he's
one of these seven members. And Sharon Moore he was
deleting reportedly fifty two text messages with Connor Stallions, who
was the sign stealing.
Speaker 1 (01:44:48):
Guru over there.
Speaker 2 (01:44:50):
So with all that the sign stealing situation in the backdrop,
listen to what Jim Harbaugh had to say. Now there's
lying and then there's this, which is another realm of
lying altogether.
Speaker 11 (01:45:05):
Never lie, never cheat, never steal. I was raised with
that lesson. I have raised my family on that lesson.
I have preached that lesson to the teams that I've coached.
Speaker 1 (01:45:18):
No one's perfect.
Speaker 11 (01:45:20):
If you stumble, you apologize, and you make it right. Today,
I do not apologize. I did not participate, was not
aware nor complicit in those set allegations. So for me,
it's back to work and attacking with an enthusiasm unknown
to mankind.
Speaker 2 (01:45:39):
I mean, wow, that is okay. They're like there are
bold faced lies and like to preface all of this
with these are core standards of mine.
Speaker 3 (01:45:51):
I was raised this way.
Speaker 2 (01:45:53):
I impart this wisdom upon all my players and then proceeds.
Speaker 3 (01:45:58):
To lie through his teeth.
Speaker 1 (01:46:00):
What a clown. And I love Jim Harbaugh, but this
is you can't defend this.
Speaker 2 (01:46:06):
Like the whole staff knows all about the sign stealing
situation and he doesn't.
Speaker 1 (01:46:11):
It isn't even believable.
Speaker 4 (01:46:13):
And yet he's.
Speaker 3 (01:46:14):
Sitting there saying I was raised this one.
Speaker 2 (01:46:16):
Now he's throwing his parents under the bus as he's
lying through his teeth.
Speaker 4 (01:46:20):
What is he doing here?
Speaker 5 (01:46:23):
He's he's doing exactly what he should be doing here.
Here's here's the crazy thing about this. And Brian, you
know this. And I'm not being jaded. This is a
part of our reality. And I'm not even just talking
about football as Americans as human beings. Look, Jim Harbaugh
is a political animal. We know politics. It's a liar's game. Yeah,
(01:46:47):
all right, so there's no there's no secrets here. Michigan
broke rules. Not only did they break the rules that
he's guilty of that he was penalized for, but he
also broke other rules.
Speaker 4 (01:46:59):
And and you just alluded to it.
Speaker 5 (01:47:01):
I mean, more and more information about the Connors stallions
and the you know, the sign stealing and all that
is going to be tumbling out in the coming months.
And I'm sure the NCAA is going to have to
levy more penalties toward the Michigan Wolverine's football program over
that scandal. And Jim Harbaugh is going to skate. He's
going to skate. And here's the reality of the situation.
(01:47:25):
You cannot hate Jim Harbaugh for doing exactly what Jim
Harbaugh should do in this situation because it's a liar's game.
Don't hate the player, hate the game. For every political
candidate that you hate vehement leap post, just understand the
political candidate that you're rooting for is the same.
Speaker 4 (01:47:48):
They're all cut from the same cloth. And that is
the same with coaches. It's a political game.
Speaker 5 (01:47:55):
There are no friends, there's no close friends in this game.
I mean, whoever he upsets on his way out the
door in Michigan, screw him. I'm on to bigger, better
things with the Chargers.
Speaker 4 (01:48:07):
Now.
Speaker 5 (01:48:08):
That's the way this game works, and it's the way
this game has worked forever. You cannot be a politician
or a head coach in the NFL or at the
college level, the major college level in this country, without
hurting people's feelings and railroading people on the way to
your own success.
Speaker 4 (01:48:28):
He is doing exactly what he should be.
Speaker 5 (01:48:30):
Doing because it's what's best for Jim Harbaugh and the
twenty twenty four Chargers, and that's the only thing that
he's concerned with.
Speaker 4 (01:48:37):
So I get it. It's distasteful, it's it's absolutely not
the truth, but it's exactly what he should be doing.
Speaker 3 (01:48:46):
Yeah, one of the reasons that I can't stand politics
is because of what rich is talking about. And it's
funny because there was a time in my career where
I was asked to cover politics every day in New
York City.
Speaker 1 (01:48:59):
I remember interviewing Mayor build a Blasio on.
Speaker 3 (01:49:01):
The subway a few years ago, like that was my job,
and I remember thinking to myself, you're a sports guy, Jared,
what the heck are you doing? And then I got
back into sports in the betting side and now doing
this show, and I remember calling back on a lot.
Speaker 1 (01:49:15):
Of those political stories that I covered, thinking to.
Speaker 3 (01:49:19):
Myself, Wow, this really does kind of translate over to
some of the things we hear these coaches, mostly the owners.
When the owners talk and the GMS, that's when I
really go into politics mode. But I think coach Harbaugh
is kind of in that vein. I have no idea
how this situation is going to play out for the
(01:49:41):
NCAA and Taron Moore and the rest of the Michigan
culprits here, but yeah, I agree with Rich.
Speaker 1 (01:49:48):
I mean, this is like I think Coach.
Speaker 3 (01:49:51):
Harbaugh, there is a certain level of yeah, I can't
do any more damage, but I can certainly make it
seem like I'm innocent.
Speaker 1 (01:50:00):
And if he wants to live in that world, then
that's the.
Speaker 3 (01:50:04):
World he's gonna live in. I think the reality that
we live in, we all know what happened. Like it
was a very It's not really a very convoluted story
like it happens a lot, I think in college football.
Speaker 1 (01:50:13):
It's just Michigan got caught.
Speaker 3 (01:50:15):
But I don't I'm not surprised at all. I mean,
this is this is a coach that told us JJ
McCarthy was going to be the number one pick in
the draft a few months ago. I remember he went
on Colin Coward Show and said that, So I don't.
I don't have any surprises anymore with what these coaches
will say to try to make themselves, you know, exonerate
themselves from whatever situation they're in.
Speaker 2 (01:50:35):
Well, this is the thing, man, we get it to
what Rich is saying. There's a lot a lot of
lying that takes place within sports. You know, we were
talking about Bryce Young earlier, the Panthers head coach. If
you interviewed Dave Canal as the head coach and said, hey, Dave,
what's Bryce looking like? You know, what do you think
of him as a quarterback? He's not going to turn
(01:50:55):
and look at you and say, man, I think he sucks.
If that's what he truly believed, he's gonna say the
direct opposite. Like, there's lying that takes place on a
daily basis within sports. But the thing with Harbaugh that
makes this so different in my mind is he's not
just lying. He like warmed you up with this whole
(01:51:19):
spiel about this is what I was raised on over.
Speaker 4 (01:51:23):
Really, dude, if.
Speaker 2 (01:51:25):
He just came right out and said, oh I don't
know anything about that's one thing. Okay, that's still a
bold faced lie, because clearly he did. But at least
he didn't warm us up like the beginning of this
rich in particular, based on what you had to say.
This is so much different than a normal, ordinary sports lie.
When he says this to preface his comments, yeah.
Speaker 11 (01:51:46):
Never lie, never cheat, never steal. I was raised with
that lesson. I've raised my family that lesson.
Speaker 3 (01:51:56):
He's raised his family.
Speaker 2 (01:51:58):
He's basically raised play in a sports kind of way, right,
and then he lies after really different.
Speaker 4 (01:52:06):
He told he told no lie there. It's true that
he could have.
Speaker 5 (01:52:12):
What's crazy about what he just said, it's crazy like
a fox because he didn't lie.
Speaker 1 (01:52:18):
No, he didn't lie about those commons. Well, actually he
did because he is lying, you know, with what he
said later in the.
Speaker 5 (01:52:24):
In the Harba, in the Harball household, maybe he was
raised with those values, and then in his household, maybe
he's raised his own family with those values. However, when
he puts when when he puts on his coaching khakis
and he ties his white sneakers, and he and he
puts on his little his his glasses in his cap,
and he goes out there and he hits the sideline.
Speaker 4 (01:52:46):
He can leave all those values at the front door.
He could stick them in the mailbox for when he
gets back home.
Speaker 1 (01:52:51):
Because that's exactly what he's done.
Speaker 5 (01:52:52):
And see, but that's my point is this is such
a cleverly crafted no statement, No, it's not.
Speaker 3 (01:52:59):
It's the opposite that of clever.
Speaker 4 (01:53:00):
Oh No, I think he's a genius. I think the
guy is going to walk, he's gonna skate, and by
the way, he.
Speaker 1 (01:53:07):
Will because he's in the NFL. There's nothing they can
do to him.
Speaker 4 (01:53:10):
And that's my point.
Speaker 3 (01:53:11):
Like and by the way, basically moved to Granada like
where they can't extra.
Speaker 5 (01:53:15):
Yeah right, yeah, yeah, yeah, he's yeah, he's he's gonna
he's gonna have like a fat pad on an island
with a palm tree and he's defected.
Speaker 3 (01:53:24):
They can't touch him anymore.
Speaker 5 (01:53:26):
Yeah, it's it's amazing. It's amazing how how you can
you can control the narrative when you have power. And
Jim Harbaugh right now can control this narrative. Now nobody
believes him, not right now. But all of that is
in writing. And we could be as snarky and as
(01:53:46):
you know, we could try to pull the curtains open
and shine daylight on the truth. But I promise you
victors get to write history So if Jim Harbaugh moves
on from the disaster, he's like for the Michigan Wolverines,
which it may be a disaster because again I don't
think the NCAA has done levying punishment against the coaches
(01:54:07):
who have been left behind or the program altogether. Well,
we'll see what happens in the future. But then he
moves on to the Chargers, and if he has any
monicum of success with the Chargers this season and into
the future, dare I say if he wins the Chargers
their first Super Bowl, nobody is not going this is
going to be a footnote in the Jim Harbaugh story.
Speaker 4 (01:54:29):
People are going to be lauding his coaching.
Speaker 1 (01:54:31):
Career if they win the division this year.
Speaker 3 (01:54:34):
If they win the Division this year, they should celebrate
it like it's the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (01:54:39):
I've lost so much respect for that guy based on
this whole I honestly think it's gonna go really poorly
for the Chargers.
Speaker 7 (01:54:47):
Well yeah, but I really do.
Speaker 2 (01:54:50):
I was raised on these principles. If you stumble, you
you admit it and move on. I don't think being said,
I do not apologize.
Speaker 4 (01:54:58):
I know nothing.
Speaker 3 (01:55:00):
Oh my gosh, get out of here. He only follow
up I have here it gets to where we are
now present day. Rich If that was your head coach
in the NFL and he was talking about that, would.
Speaker 4 (01:55:11):
He lose you.
Speaker 1 (01:55:13):
Care in the NFL Michigan.
Speaker 4 (01:55:15):
No, he wouldn't lose me at all. I'd be like,
all right, all right, Jim, let's go win some football games.
I don't care what you did in college. I just
care what No, no, no, I'm talking about.
Speaker 3 (01:55:23):
His demeanor and kind of his like shtick, like everything's
like team politics, this and that. Like I want more
of like a pragmatic professional who isn't like gimmicky like
Jim is, Like that was a gimmick speech that he
gave that we just played.
Speaker 2 (01:55:37):
All right, We've got rich Oronberger Penn State all American
gas bag. We've got Jared Smith FSR, vetting analyst gas bag.
Speaker 1 (01:55:46):
I'm Brian, no gas bag.
Speaker 2 (01:55:48):
That's why clock integrity has been blown to smithereens this summe.
Speaker 3 (01:55:51):
That's all right, we regroup.
Speaker 2 (01:55:53):
We've got some rapid fire picks for you, three apiece.
Speaker 1 (01:55:57):
That's on the way.
Speaker 2 (01:55:57):
It's Fox Sports Saturday, right here on Fox Sports Radio.

cron Up on Game, Top of the Hour, LaVar Arrington, TJ. Hushman,
Zada Plexico, Buris. They've got you covered in less than
ten minutes. We got some picks to make.
Speaker 4 (01:56:41):
Let's do it.
Speaker 2 (01:56:45):
Rapid fire, all right, Jared, I've thrown off off the
your feet, nurfy.
Speaker 1 (01:56:50):
What are we gonna hear it? Rapid fire here today?
Speaker 2 (01:56:52):
Huh?
Speaker 4 (01:56:53):
Preseason NFL baby, Yo, We're.
Speaker 3 (01:56:56):
Going all in with pre season all right. Here's what
you focus on in the pre season. Quarterbacks and coaches,
and I like to fade the good teams, right like
the Eagles and the Chiefs and the teams that are
supposed to be really good.
Speaker 1 (01:57:09):
They don't have a whole lot to prove in the preseason.
Speaker 3 (01:57:11):
So we're gonna attack some of the other teams, like,
I don't know, let's say the Washington Commanders facing the
Jets in about ten minutes, Jake Daniels playing, Marcus Mariota playing,
Aaron Rodgers not playing. It's gonna be a lot of
Tarrod Taylor and probably a lot of Andrew Peasley and
maybe Adrian Martinez.
Speaker 1 (01:57:26):
For the Jets.
Speaker 3 (01:57:26):
Yeah, we're gonna lay three points with the Commanders here.
Speaker 4 (01:57:29):
Also, how about Tennessee.
Speaker 3 (01:57:30):
When are you ever gonna see the Tennessee Titans as
a six point favored against the Niners only in preseason?
You bet we're laying it with Tennessee today. The Niners
have nothing to prove in this game. They're gonna rest
their starters very quickly. Whereas Tennessee rookie head coach obviously
second year quarterback Will Loves I think are gonna push
the tempo a little bit and let's see. Oh yeah,
I'm also gonna take the Jaguars today. Why because the
(01:57:52):
Chiefs have absolutely nothing to prove in the preseason, and
you know this game means a lot to Jacksonville. They
got bouncing the playoffs a couple of years ago by
the Chief, and I think you're gonna see a very
inspired effort. Trevor Lawrence will play today solo Patrick Mahomes,
but I will take the Jags, I will take the Commanders,
and I will take the Titans against the spread today.
Speaker 4 (01:58:12):
In the preseason.
Speaker 5 (01:58:13):
Okay, I told you earlier I have a bad feeling
about today. This doesn't mean that the US is gonna lose,
but this could be a tight one between Team USA
and Team France in the gold medal round in Paris
for men's hoops.
Speaker 4 (01:58:26):
So I'm gonna take the points plus sixteen and a half.
Speaker 5 (01:58:31):
I'm taking France also, first half plus eight and a
half taking Team France and then Victor Webbin Yama. This
actually sounds odd. It's not counterintuitive, though. I'm taking the
under ten and a half rebounds.
Speaker 4 (01:58:45):
Here's the reason why.
Speaker 5 (01:58:46):
Because I think that it's gonna take perimeter shooting for
Team USA to beat France. I think a lot of
rebounds are gonna clang off the rim, go over his
rebounding range, and end up in the hands of a
lot of the guards.
Speaker 4 (01:58:58):
For Team France.
Speaker 5 (01:58:59):
So again, France plus sixteen and a half for the
game overall, plus eight and a half for the first
half and ten and a half rebounds.
Speaker 4 (01:59:07):
I'm taking the under for Wemby.
Speaker 2 (01:59:09):
Okay, Rich, I'm looking at your San Diego Padres.
Speaker 1 (01:59:12):
I'm gonna start with hoops. Let's start with baseball.
Speaker 2 (01:59:15):
The Padres over thirteen and a half total bases today, huh.
I like their offense against Roderi Munos of the Marlins,
so give me they have the Padres at least fourteen
total bases. Interesting prop bet right there, offered on bet MGM.
I've got my eye on us hoops. Give me Joe
(01:59:37):
l Embiat over thirteen and a half. The French crowd
has been all over him. He's gonna give him the business.
He cooked Wemby for seventy points, the only matchup they've
had in their NBA careers. So I'm going with mbat
at least fourteen points today. Give me the under on
Brianna Stewart three and a half assists. She's gonna be
in score mode mindset, So I'm gonna take the under
(02:00:00):
on assist for Stewie. Right there, everybody, enjoy the action today,
we'll catch you later.
