Speaker 2 (00:04):
Well, that's right, you heard the man. It's that time
of week. My name is Bernie Fredder. We are comedy
live from the tyraq dot com studios here in Las Vegas.
Fox Sports Radio tyraq dot com, Well help you get there.
An unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free road hazard protection,
and over ten thousand recommended installers. Tyraq dot com. The
(00:25):
way tire buying should be another scorcher today in Vegas.
I don't want to say it was hot, but I
saw I saw two thieves stealing hubcaps and they were
both wearing oven mits. Speaking of scorchers, did you see
the Olympics or the Olympic game today, the men's game
(00:47):
against France, especially when France cut the lead to three.
Hold that thought. I'm gonna come back to it. You know,
if you've ever been to a Purdue basketball game, of course,
who hasn't They play at Gene Katie Court. Geen Katy
was a longtime legendary coaching Purdue, A great guy, but
it never even went to a Final four. But I digress.
But as Jean Katie was excoriating his team one night,
(01:11):
that means he was yelling at him. He told him,
he goes, you don't have enough talent to went on
talent alone. Well, you know what the US men's team did.
And I've been saying it for three weeks now, And
in case you missed it, between Thursday and Saturday, Steph
Curry seventeen to three pointers, sixty points, nine rebounds, assists,
(01:34):
shot sixty eight percent from behind the arc. And I
am telling you it is as clutch of performance as
I've seen. We're talking to start Michael Jordan nineteen ninety
eight Finals against Utah, Reggie Jackson three home runs in
the World Series against the Yankees and three consecutive at bats,
while Magic Johnson twenty year old Magic Johnson jumping center
(01:55):
Game six against the Philadelphia seventy six ers, scoring forty
two points, leading the lie to their first championship in
ten years, even though he should have been a junior
at Michigan State. How about Joe Montana's comeback with a
minute thirty eight to go in Super Bowl sixteen, the
touchdown passed to John Taylor. That's what Curry's performance was
(02:15):
like the team they got it done. Was it artistic? No?
I don't think so. Was it cohesive. No, I don't
think so. But I've been saying for three weeks and
I will revisit this with Mark Mandine at twelve midnight.
When you've got a collection of the best run and
jump athletes in the universe, the most skillful athletes in
(02:39):
the universe, that's what you need to win these tournaments.
He's international tournaments. They played NBA basketball because they're NBA
players and they're the best in the world, and they
got it done. End of story. I'll give you my
three takeaways in a minute, but I gotta tell you
these are the current don't have royalty in this country.
(03:01):
You've heard me say a thousand times. Our athletes and
our entertainers, they in fact are our royalty. And when
you observe what we are able to observe today between
twelve thirty Pacific time and two thirty Pacific time, you
realize that you're seeing entertainment of the likes that can't
be artificially created. You know, movie producers, movie screenwriters, they're
(03:25):
paid a fortune to come up with a script and
come up with an ending. How do you come up
with an ending that's as compelling? Is what perhaps the
US men's basketball team was you can't. You can't. That's
why the beauty of sports is you can script everything.
But the ending, I think Steve Kerr said it best.
(03:47):
Every team has great players, we just have more of them.
And it's true. So when the history books are written,
the US men's team circle twenty twenty four impair, we'll
have won the fifth straight gold medal. And I saw
relief on their faces. They did not want to be
this group that you know, lost the gold medal and
(04:14):
again incredible entertainment. And I give the team credit. They
did what they were supposed to do. You heard me
see the Chris rock line before. Hard to give someone
credit when they usually don't give someone credit when they
did what they're supposed to do. But I give them
a lot of credit. And in the end they were
tough too. They were tougher than a two dollars stake.
Couple takeaways. A couple takeaways one Steph Curry, Lebron, James
(04:39):
Kevin Durant. Have we seen them in their last Olympics? Yeah?
I think so. You never know of Lebron, He asked
the other day, how you know what do people ask
you about? It? A retirement and Lebron said no, not really.
They almost never do because for some odd reason they
think I'm going to play ten more years. No, Lebron,
that's not. They don't ask you because you're gonna get
(05:01):
in some goofy inauthentic phony, long witted word salad answer
that it'd be inscrutable, and we don't know what you're saying.
And you probably don't want to play ten more years
because you're gonna miss the spotlight a lot more of
the spotlight'll miss you. But I'm about to give your
flowers in a second, So just saying out on Lebron,
but mission complete and give it up to those Big
three and throw Joel Embiid in there as well. He mattered.
(05:23):
He mattered against Joker on Thursday, and he mattered Saturday.
But look toward the end of the season, KD, Lebron,
Stephan ever even been in the Olympics. They committed to
going to Paris toward the end of the season, and
they proved they're still among the best players in the
world despite the fact they're all in an advanced age
(05:43):
from an NBA standpoint, So I think it was with
apologies to Mike Jordan, Michael Jordan. It was their last dance.
By the way, you have to remember this group came
when I say a mission accomplished, not just winning the
gold team. USA came into the Olympics with a point
to prove because they finished fourth in the twenty twenty
three Feeble World Cup last year. Maybe they lost to Canada.
(06:06):
We all thought we were heading toward to Canada rematch,
but Canada played NBA basketball too. You know, you don't
pass the ball. I watched Shay Gil just just dribble
down low into a triple team and France thwarted him
every time. But again, Steve Kurst team was undefeated their
entire run. They found ways to overcome this French team
that was very talented in their own right, very driven,
(06:28):
very tough. But what are you gonna do with Curry's
just making three? He's you know, like Jason mckilhorn. The
bottom line is mission accomplished. Number two to the second takeaway.
Lebron turns forty in a couple months, but he is
one hell of a force in nature and he proved
it again among the most talented players in the planet
(06:48):
throughout the tournament. Now, either you can debate whether or
not you give Curry the MVP, because if he didn't
do what he did, they don't win it. I'm sorry
he built him out against Serbia big time, and build
him on Saturday. Now, France got it to three with
about four minutes to go, and then Curry hit three
more threes. I he got seventeen in two games. But
(07:09):
Lebron throughout the tournament was extremely consistent. Fourteen points, seven rebounds,
almost nine assists per game, shot sixty six percent from
the field, and you know very much was a keycock
and leading the team to a gold medal. And I
think he was a force of nature and he lit
the fire, there's no question, made defensive plays, two block shots.
(07:30):
And today or Saturday against France, Lebron had fourteen points,
six rebounds, had ten assists. Now you know, has he
lost a little bit of explosiveness maybe, but not enough
to have it make a difference, because when he wants
to play bully ball, at least in the FEBA, he
had no trouble and he adapted his game I think,
(07:52):
to play within the framework of Team USA, whatever that
framework was. And so look what Lebron did this tournament
was legendary. Give him his flowers. The third takeaway is
let's talk about Victor wembin Yama. He had arguably his
best game of the Olympics when it mattered most playing
(08:12):
against a USA All Star team, but he somehow found
ways to crack open the defense. He used his size
on the defensive end and he hit I think it
was three of eight from behind the arc. First Olympics tournament,
there were tremendous expectations, tremendous pressure from the home crowd.
(08:34):
This team was very aspirational, wanting to win this gold
medal in the worst way, and I thought Wemby handled
the expectations admirably. He had all kinds of pressure on
his shoulders. He performed at a very high level. He
showed a skill set that is gonna make him maybe
if things fall into place and they turned him loose
in San Antonio, he may be the face of the
(08:56):
league when the big three, KD, Stephan and Lebron move on.
He's got a silver medal to his name, and he's
a young dude, and he'll undoubtedly look to continue developing
his game. He starts his sophomore season here in the
NBA A couple months, but he's already shown the ceiling
of what he can do, and it's still fairly raw talent.
(09:19):
What might whenby looked like when the twenty twenty eight
Olympics roll around. What We're gonna have to wait and see,
But I gotta tell you it might be worth the wait.

Hi, right back on the Bernie fratter Show, Fox Sports Radio.

college football writer. He's been with NFL dot Com as

Football is here.
Speaker 6 (11:42):
How you doing, buddy, I'm doing fantastic. How are you?
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Bernie doing great? Lots to talk about, and I've been
looking forward to this conversation because the universe seems to
be swirling around three or four of the same stories.
Let's just start in Dallas. You've got the DAK contract situation,
the Ceedee Lamb contract situation, You've got the Mike McCarthy
(12:06):
contract situation, soon to be Michael Parsons. With all that
swirling around the Cowboys, I don't believe their outlook is
good this year. Am I wrong?
Speaker 6 (12:16):
It depends on what you're really looking for them to do.
It's to win the Super Bowl. I agree with you.
I don't think that they have a particularly easy path
to that goal. And that's even if you don't count
all the various issues they have with the contracts. I'm
sure we'll get into that, but you're just like about
winning their division. I actually don't know if it's that difficult,
Like they're not necessarily going to be the runaway favorite.
(12:38):
The Eagles have comparable talent, but those are really the
only two teams that, on paper have that degree of ability.
So if it's one of two teams, you got to
feel these okay about your chances.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
No, that's an excellent point, Jason, and I should have
qualified it. I'm going to just break up the party
right now, and I think they're going eight to nine.
Their early edule is tough, and I think when they
get out of September there'll be a whole new sense
of drama. But let's get back to the contract. So
that's the elephant in the room. What do you expect
that will happen with Dak?
Speaker 6 (13:12):
I expect that he's going to end up playing out
this final season of his current contract, or the final
real season of this current contract, and then go into
undersector free agency next offseason, and from there it's anybody's guest.
I think the situation is a little different for Ceedee Lamb.
He's much younger. He's someone that if the Cowboys were
going to rebuild like or really reboot this thing the
(13:35):
way Let's say like the Minnesota Vikings did this offseason.
You want to keep him around because he can be
a part of your core the next time you're competitive
with Prescott. I mean it's possible that he could be it, right, Like,
it's not like he's forty years old, but he's going
to have a lot of options. His price tag is
going to be maybe as high as any player we've
ever seen. And maybe you feel like your captain in
(13:58):
terms of not so your salary cap in you're feeling
with a quarterback like that that he's very very good,
but he isn't necessarily great when you need him to be.
And for those reasons, I think you might see different
outcomes with those two players.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
So why can't Dak smarten up and take a team
friendly deal, get the other players paid? Take a page
out of Patrick Mahomes' book.
Speaker 6 (14:21):
Well, for a variety of reasons. One, he's not Patrick
Mahomes right, Like, if he does a team friendly deal,
it doesn't mean that the Cowboys suddenly have the ability
to go win the Super Bowl. Well, you're Patrick Mahomes,
the best quarterback on the planet. You know you can
take a bit of a pay in relative terms, and
have a really good chance at the super Bowl every
(14:43):
single year. Also, most people don't like to say facas
I don't blame Dak Prescott for wanting to see where
this market goes. And it's not like the Cowboys didn't
have opportunities to sign into a long term deal, you know,
a year ago, longer than that, Like they could have
signed to a long term deal if you can really
go back to the individual rookie contract, and he would
have been cheaper for basically this entire five year run
(15:05):
that they've been off. So the Cowboys have always played
it this way where they don't want to really commit
fully to Dak until the last second. And we're getting
to the point where Dak Prescott is going to be
a free agent. Is at a time when some quarterback
is going to meet or exceed sixty million dollars in
average annual value, and all those things make it really
(15:26):
hard for Dak Prescott, I think, to end up in
Dallas in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
Jason, you bring up a lot of excellent points, articulate
them perfectly, and you are right. This has been Jerry's
modus APPARENDI he delays and ends up paying more for
something he could have gone for perhaps less. I'm of
the opinion, though, that the market for Dak for the
money he wants might not be what he thinks it's
going to be in twenty twenty five. Am I wrong there?
Speaker 6 (15:52):
I mean, I'll tell you're definitively wrong. But that's at
least not my expectation you have. You've seen basically all
of these quarterbacks when they're time to shine get that money,
even Kirk Cousins, who's older and is coming off of
Torn Achilbes, who's able to get forty six million dollars
in average annual value. Now look at all the contracts
(16:12):
that are signed by quarterbacks after that one, and they
consider that Dak Prescott, at one point in December last season,
was the odds on favorite to win the MVP. I
don't think he's one of the absolute best quarterbacks in
the league, but he's able to play at a very
high level for a full season. And you add all
those things together, I think there's going to be not
just one team, multiple teams. They're going to try to
(16:35):
get in to join them next offseason. You know, the
Cowboys and Sylvie in the mix. There. Not totally writing
off that possibility, but you know, the more time passes,
the harder it is to see the Cowboys committee the
amount of money that Dak is likely to command on
the open market.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
No, I can't disagree with any of that. I just
think there's a correction coming a Sam Bradford fifteen years
ago when they corrected the rookie pay scale. But we'll see,
we'll see. Let's let's see what plays out. You mentioned
Philadelphia there my pick to win the NFC East. How
serious is the rift between Nick Sirianni and galend Hurts.
Speaker 6 (17:11):
I don't know, but we can look a lot of
the ancillary details and see there's something strange going on
there that's surely bad. But it's hard to account for
exactly what they're going to do this year.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
Now.
Speaker 6 (17:21):
Usually when you see a team replace both their offensive
defensive coordinator, it needs one or two things. Either team
is coming off a great season, and those guys got
hired away where they're coming off of very disappointing season,
and both those guys had to be replaced as a
way of establishing that coach. He got Estalvaging that head
coach in particular, we're in the latter stages of that.
You know, Nick Sirianni and crime jonathons O see last
(17:45):
season guy he promoted from quarterback coach and he basically
brought into Vic Fangio system via Sean de Side. Neither
of those things worked out, and that's why we have
actual Vic Fangio running the defense now and a Kellen
more offense that is very different from what they have
run at any point under Nick Sirianni's tenure. And it's
(18:05):
really hard for me to see how that plays out.
No necessarily mean it's going to be bad, but this
is a team that's operates in a very particular way
now for about half a decade. They're now transitioning to
something that is very different in some ways good, in
some ways bad. Kellen Moore has never had a consistent
run game at any point when he was the offensive coordinator,
so of his passing game constants have been very creative. Though,
(18:26):
how do those things match with a Jalen Hurts offense.
You know, he's someone who's a capable passer. You go
in front of the same category as a lot of
those top end of lead passes terms of arm talent,
and that's why it's really strange when you have an
offense that's really predicated on those kind of skills, whereas
the things that Jalen Hurts does the best, which when
he's healthy, there's the run game stuff, not just the
(18:46):
tousch push, but all of that mobility day brings that
hasn't really been a forte of the Kellen Moore offense.
So you look at the fact that that's what they're insoling.
That's ultimately Nick Sirianni's call. It is a little strange,
and I wonder if that's good to be a point
of friction throughout the twenty twenty four seasons.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
But the addition of Saquon Barkley, how much does that
affect a new offensive scheme.
Speaker 6 (19:08):
Well, again, it comes back to I don't know what
Kellen Lare is going to do with that run game
because it's been so inconsistent over his time as an
offensive coordinator. I think it's possible given what happened at
geld Hurts last year when he got hurt, I don't
know that they're going to want to do the touchbush
with him quite as much as they did not that
they want to move from the offense, but I might
want to protect him in those situations. So what can
(19:30):
you do if you want to run that play and
you want to protect your quarterback. Well, Sakawon Barkley actually
could stand in for that, right Like Sakwon Barkley has
basically as good flower by starts as you're going to
see from a non offensive defensive lineman, and could he
sub in there. I mean, he's taken direct stamps before
with the Giants, He's done in college as well. It's
actually possible that he plays this sort of like not
(19:52):
a wildcat quarterback role exactly, but something where he actually
is in some situations basically being the core, even if
it's a designed run play. So I think there's some
creative things that could do there for Saquon Barkley. Addition
is just you know, handing him the ball, you know,
two hundred and fifty times a year. But again I
don't really know because we haven't seen this kind of
(20:13):
combination of talents work with an offensive coordinator like Kellen Moore.
If you go extremely well, that's on the table for this,
but it could also be very awkward, especially early in
the year. And they're still filling it all out.
Speaker 2 (20:25):
I just feel they got Saquon Barkley for a reason. Fair.
I mean, so again, it has to play out, and
I'm very aware of Kellen Moore and his thoughts and
I remember him well at Boise State, so we don't
know what he's going to do. But I would just
say this that I feel like at the end of
(20:45):
the day, you may see a more run centric offense
there because I just feel like they have to say
Quon Barkley for a reason. But that's just my opinion.
Real quickly, the Jets, Robert Sala, Aaron Rodgers. We're hearing
the reports that Rogers looks rific out of camp and
he's doing rollouts and he's, you know, seems to be
throwing the ball extremely well. Obviously we know what happened
(21:09):
in the offseason to trip to Egypt, things of that nature.
Robert Sala another guy who appears to be on the
hot seat. So there's a Paul cast over the Jets camp.
Am I overrating that as well?
Speaker 6 (21:22):
No, this is a do or die season for this
particular version of the New York Jets. You know, there
might be pieces here that exist in twenty twenty five
in New York. Even if this season doesn't go well,
but it is really hard to see Robert Sala and
that coaching staff surviving. This isn't up being a great
through season. You know, Aaron Rodgers is really running the show.
We've known this since he landed there. But it's also
(21:46):
kind of the reason they were able to survive last
seasons disaster because you know, the lasted four snaps into
the first game of the season. Everyone kind of knew
that there wasn't really a chance for that team to
make a Super Bowl run once Roger was gone, so
their best course of action at that point in time
was to run it all back. So you can understand
how this happens. At the same time, Rogers is going
(22:08):
to be in his age forty one season, I think physically,
as a passer, basically everything is still there. I think
you've seen that in camp. You know, you can see
the drop off with quarterbacks happen all at once. So
maybe at some point in the year we feel differently
about that. But mechanically it seems like that is still
part of his.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Game that his mobiles used to be.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
But that was true before the Achilles injury too. They
can still build a solid pass of solid pass game
if he's able to be protected. If obviously invested more
of the offensive line, I selve questions there. I saw
some questions about the skill position players around him outside
of Garrett Wilson in Breis Hall, because Alan Lazzard shoots
like he's going to be a relatively major piece of
(22:49):
that offense. Mike Williams is going to be a major
prince of the offense if he's healthy, and that is
always a question with Michael Williams. So that season could
go in so many different directions even if everyone's tell
and that itself is asian variable there. So it's one
of the most fascinating situations we're going to see the
NFL this year because of how much weight that organization
is put on this season, and it ended up being
(23:11):
a great year. It also ended up being basically the
most drama filled season we've seen in sometimes.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
Jason, great stuff. As always. I look forward to having
you on again in a few weeks as we observe
the Eagles, Jets, and the Cowboys now to navigate this season,
as you said, all under a lot of pressure. Good stuff, Jason,
appreciate you, buddy.
Speaker 6 (23:30):
All right, take care, Berne.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
That is Jason Hirshorn. You've heard them on my show
many times. Award winning NFL college football writer, co founder
of the League of Green Bay Packers newsletter. Of course,
he's been with NFL dot Com, esp Nation Sports Illustrated.
You can clearly see he's got his finger on the
pulse coming up. I made sure I specifically watched the
(23:52):
number one over draft pick, the number one overall draft
pick today and I have some thoughts. But first go
to a guy of the chef, Kevin Wyer with the latest. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (24:02):
At the Olympics in Paris, it is the United States
claiming their fifth straight gold medal, going back to the
Redeemed team in two thousand and eight. They beat the
host team France ninety eight eighty seven, as Steph Curry
making it rain from three. He hit eight of twelve
shots from beyond the arch. He also nailed four big
(24:22):
ones in the final minutes to really put it away
for the United States. So a team USA once again
the Olympic champions. The USA women's basketball team trying for
the same thing against France. They have that game coming
up on Sunday at nine thirty a m. Eastern time.
Elsewhere in the Olympics, both American men and women taking
(24:45):
home the gold medal in the four by four hundred
meter relay. So the United States one hundred and twenty
two total medals, thirty eight of them gold. The gold
medal count does trail China, who has thirty nine. France
has sixty two total medals, sixteen of them goal the
United States women's soccer team yet again winning a gold medal.
(25:07):
They blink Brazil one at nil. Major League Baseball, it's
still a tie virtual one. On top of the American
League West, the Mariners shout out the Mets four to nothing.
Logan Gilbert seven scoreless innings and six strikeouts for Seattle
and the victory Astros get by the Red Sox five
to four, yard On Alvarez with it two home runs
for Houston. In the National League West, the Dodgers, handing
(25:28):
Paul Skeins his second loss of the season in a
four to one victory, Padres out last of the Marlins
nine to eight extra inning. So the Dodgers lead in
the nl WES six at two and a half games.
In the NFL preseason Caleb Williams four of seven passes
for ninety five yards, a one to one point eight
pass the rating that also included a couple of drops,
(25:49):
one of them by DJ Moore. The Bears do end
up beating the Bills thirty three to six JJ mccarthury
one hundred and eighty eight yards, two touchdowns at and
a pick, as the Viking do beat the Raiders twenty
four to twenty three. Titans over the forty nine or
seventeen thirteen Maleague Willis five to seven of four thirty
eight yards.
Speaker 4 (26:08):
Back to you, Bernie.
Speaker 2 (26:10):
We know there's only one real chef, right, that's Kevin Wired,
although they do call Steph Curry the chef. You know
about that, right, comes from the Drake song ten years ago,
zero one hundred to catch up. Well, we'll get to
that later. We're on those vocal cords up, chef, we'll
be hearing from you one of your performances here in
(26:30):
a couple of hours. All right, that was clunky. Well
i'll tell you what wasn't clunky. Caleb Williams and his
debut today. I watched closely. I covered the Lions for
ten years. I believe I know how to evaluate quarterbacks,
and I would just say this immediately, Caleb Williams made
a great first impression, and I'll tell you why. In
(26:51):
his very first series, the pocket collapsed, he recognized it
and made a play and got some positive yardage. He
made a play, not with his arm, not with his legs,
with his eyes. Yes, I don't know if it showed
(27:12):
up on any highlight reel, but I noticed it immediately.
Had that been justin fields with the Bears, he would
have taken off running like a whirling dervish and ran
around sideways for thirty eight yards and gained three yards,
and people would have said, oh man, what a world
class athlete. Oh my god, I can't believe it. No,
Caleb Williams is a major league quarterback. He's going to
(27:33):
be a major league quarterback. Why. Because quarterback is a
position you play with your eyes. You have to have
a base level of talent to get to the NFL.
But the thing is you play the position with your
eyes because you receive the ball, you take mental snap
shots within less than two seconds, you make a decision
(27:53):
and you execute. And the idea is to recognize what
you see, the decision and execute. And that first little
shovel pass with three defenders bearing down on him. That
was vision. That was a play made by his eyes
because of his recognition. Well, that was just one of
twenty snaps. That was one of twenty snaps that Caleb
(28:18):
Williams took Saturday. He had two full drives. And I
will tell you and I think this dude plays the
game with joy. He is going to be a unique playmaker.
There were so many positive takeaways from his debut today.
This is not hyperbole. Okay, Yes, he was four to
seven pass attempts, as Kevin just said, but there were
(28:40):
a couple of drops where that would have been better
ninety five yards. Even had a thirteen yard scramble because
it was the correct decision with his eyes got the
Bears into the red zone twice. Both trips resulted in points. Yeah,
they were field goals. But what Caleb Williams showed is
an ability to create out of structure when the play
(29:02):
breaks down. He showed that he could be outside of scheme,
outside of structure, outside a game plan and make something happen.
And he did it by showing poise and pocket awareness
and when he has to make throws and he leaves
the pocket and keeps plays alive with his feet and
keeps his eyes downfield. He makes precise throws, at least
(29:23):
he did Saturday. I don't think it was a fluke.
His first completion was third and long. He worked through
his progressions. Go back and watch it, don't take my
word for it. Found Dj Moore for twelve yards. Then
he extended a play he threw a seed to co
Comet while also on the run. And then he later
(29:46):
on that same drive, he even got cute through a
little no look pass to DeAndre Swift that resulted in
a forty two yard game. And uh, look, he also
so has this odd, weird knap to basically avoid getting it.
And again, this is a guy who understands how to
(30:09):
play the position with his eyes. So I think the
Bears are in good situation. And look, I've been critical
about justin fields regarding his performance, all right, I never
believed he was a major league quarterback. I think he's
a major league athlete. And I thought he was brilliant
at Ohio State, and I think as a teammate. As
(30:32):
a professional, he gets a's across the board. But he
was ten and twenty eight as a starter that ranked
thirty fourth among all starters in the past three years.
His QBR was forty sixth that ranked twenty ninth. He
only averaged one hundred and sixty seven passing yards per
game in this Man's NFL that ranked thirty sixth. He
(30:52):
only completed fifty nine percent of his passes that ranked
thirty fourth. In his career forty interception, forty touchdowns, thirty interceptions,
which rank thirty first. He did run a lot. Hey,
if you want to enter a punt, pass and kick competition,
he's your guy, unless, of course, you're going up against
thirteen year old Andrew Reid on Monday Night football. But
(31:14):
you get my drift. But it's not translating. It's not
gonna translate in Pittsburgh either. I wish the guy no
ill will, but I gotta call him as I see him.
If I come on the air and talk stupid, then
I lose credibility. So look, if a miracle is gonna
happen after thirty eight starts, well so be it. But
don't tell me show me. Mitch Trubisky was twenty five
(31:36):
and thirteen as it started for Chicago, completed sixty eight
percent of his passes got the Bears of the playoffs twice.
Wouldn't won a playoff game enough for the double doing
field goal? Oh No, he wasn't good enough. They ran
him out on a rail. I'm not mixed up. Mitch
Trubisky would not have gotten into the super Bowl. But
would you rather go twenty five and thirteen? You're ten
and twenty eight? Rarely, I can't remember a time when
(31:58):
I've seen a quarterback get this many chances after forty
starts in the NFL and showing that unfortunately, this just
might not be his deal. But I will tell you
what I saw with Kayleb Williams Saturday really really impressed me.
All Right, the Olympics, you're in the books, and for
some reason, there's still one last hurrah about Jason Tatum's
(32:22):
playing time. But this one comes from a Boston Celtic
legend who was still at ninety six years young, relevant
in Boston circles. And he's a six time NBA champion,
a thirteen time All Star, was an MVP once, and
his number hangs in the rafters at te Garden. He's
also regarded as one of the greatest point guards in history.
(32:45):
But he couldn't resist during the pot when it came
to Jason Tatum. Final thoughts on that coming up. I'm
Bernie Friddle. We are Company Lion for the Las Vegas
Fox Sports Radio tirack dot Com studios. Keep it locked
right here. You're listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on
Fox Sports Radio. All right back on the Bernie Fraddle Show,
Fox Sports Radio, come to you live from the tyrak
(33:07):
dot Com studios here in Las Vegas. Coming up at
about thirteen minutes top of the hour. Mark Medina Beadina Magic.
Every Saturday night, twelve midnight on The Bernie Frattle Show.
Obviously a lot to talk about. Big gold medal win,
an incredible, historic Steph Curry performance. Hit seventeen three pointers
(33:27):
in the semi final game and the final game, shot
sixty eight percent from behind the arc, unreal, and all
of it when it mattered most Just incredible clutch. I
mean it. I put it up there with Joe Montana's
drive in the minute thirty eight to go in Super
Bowl sixteen. Reggie Jackson hitting three dingers in the World
Series in seventy seven and three at bats against the
(33:50):
Dodgers magic. Johnson is a rookie in nineteen eighty, twenty
years old jumping center beating the Philadelphia seventy six ers
on the road. What else wanna forget? Michael Jordan making
a shot in ninety eight against you taught to complete
the three peat the stuff legends are made of, just incredible.
(34:10):
What Curry did? You will not forget this maybe ever.
It is one of those hydrama moments where, let's face it,
can you imagine if he hadn't made those shots, what
the narrative would be? I am telling you this would
be radio talk fodder forever. That this Stack team that
(34:33):
beat their chest almost lost to Serbia and then maybe
would have lost to France, which I never thought they
were gonna do. And if some butts are candy and nuts,
you'll have merry Christmas. So let's steer with the Aaron
Now they won, all right? By the way, you ever
noticed something? This is kind of random, but this is
how my brain works. You don't win a silver medal,
you lose it. You play for the gold medal when
(34:55):
you lose your award of the silver medal. Meanwhile, you
gotta win a game to win the bronze. So give
it up to Serbia who beat Germany. I wonder if
that game should have been for the silver. So if
you win the gold medal game, he dropped the bronze
because you are awarded a silver after losing. Now, granted
you made it to the gold medal game, all right,
(35:15):
hashtag random I do it sometimes. No, I haven't been
drinking in spite of all that. And the great takeaways
completed the mission lebron being an incredible force of nature
and Victor Wenby showing up and showing out on the
biggest stage of his life. And once he twelve years old.
Bob Coozy weighed in on Jason Tatum's benching of Steve Kerr,
(35:41):
and he said, Kerr made a mistake. All right, Now,
I know I have a very intelligent audience. But just
to remind you, Bob Coosey's ninety six years old. He's
a six time NBA champion, he made the All Star
Team thirteen times, he was an MVP one year, the
number of hangs in the rafters, a TV guard, and
(36:01):
he's viewed as one of the greatest point guards in history.
And if you hear him talk, I mean he's still vibrant.
The dude is he has presided over and participated in,
and been a part of, and observed and broadcasted a
tremendous amount of basketball in his lifetime. And there's no
(36:22):
question he understands the game. He's been a player, he's
been a coach, he's still a fan, and obviously he's
sticking up for his fellow Celtic compatriot. But when it
started Friday again, when Steve Kerr did not play Jason
(36:42):
Tatum at all and the ninety five ninety one went
over Serbia, and let's be fair to Jason Tatum. He's
still one of the best rebounders on the team. He
can operate as a primary playmaker in the half court,
which they didn't do any of that in this tournament.
They just readlied on athleticism and startom. And the irony
is it's in theory. In theory, Tatum's presence might have
(37:07):
solved two of the biggest issues that the USA faced
on Thursday. And by the way, just to be fair,
I would say that Kouzi isn't the only former NBA
you know, aficionado to call out Steve Kerr. And for
what it's worth, Kerr Tatum get into, did get into
the game for a few minutes Saturday against France. But
(37:29):
to the people who are invested in this emotionally, like
Jason Tatum's mom and Jason Tatum and now Bob Coosey, Uh,
they were up in their fields about this. They just
were I would have predict Tatum will be back in
twenty eight on the team and he'll play a lot,
probably probably be a starter. But here's what Bob Coosey said.
He was speaking to the Boston Club on the record Friday,
(37:52):
and he pulled no punches in his assessment of Steve
Kerr and Kerr's decision to not play by Koozi's description
one of the best players in the world, he said, quote,
when Kerr did it last week, he was in no
danger of losing the game. But in this case, he's
talking about Serbia. They got down by seventeen points, and
he's got to start to worry about losing the game
(38:15):
and to not let Tatum get off the bench. To me,
there's got to be some kind of bias that he's
got against the Celtics. He must think Tatum is a
detriment and I don't see how he can feel that
way know anything about basketball, whoa shots fired? I have
a hard time believing that Kerr would see Tatum is
(38:39):
a detriment and that he's got something against the Celtics.
I don't know, man ow old Derek White didn't play
all Saturday either, But do we really want to do this?
But that's you know. Look, I met the great announcer
Johnny most once, the gravelly voiced homer for the Boston
Celtics legend man, and I asked him a true story.
(39:01):
I said, Johnny, do you, ever, how do you feel
when people call you a homer? He says, you can't
be in his business and not develop affections. So, hey,
what did Koozie do? He did the hometown thing, stuck
up for his guy. But come on, man, they won
the They won the gold. They were never going to
(39:22):
lose the gold in my opinion. So, with all due
respect to Bob Coosey, I don't know if it served
any fruitful purpose to call out Steve Kerr in the
manner that he did, But he's Bob Coosey, and you
gotta respect the man. Coming up, we'll bring in Mark Medina.
We'll try to find out the things we don't know
what might the Olympics look like in four years in
LA and plenty of other highjinks in the meantime. Keep
(39:45):
it locked. You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (39:51):

(40:18):
I'll be darn they won the gold medal. Nobody better
to talk to? It's that time? How about that Mark?
Who'd thunk it? They cobble together this team with a
bunch of guys here in Vegas, against all odds, they
go to a foreign country and beat everybody.
Speaker 8 (40:34):
Well, bert old Bernie, not only will you be darned
that TMOSA want its fifth consecutive gold medal with you know,
the mental Olympic team, but he'll be darned that this
was one entertaining game. You were saying all along that
TMOSA was not putting together entertained performances. I thought this
represented you saw Steph Curry be Steph Curry, Kevin Durant
(40:55):
be Kevin Durant, Lebron James, b Lebron James. Same thing
with Devin Booker, like he has been the unsung hero,
perfect FEBA guy according to Steve Kurse. So I think
they've come a long way since the beginning when you
were lamenting all those tough exhibitions to watch.
Speaker 2 (41:12):
Well, I wasn't really lamenting anything.
Speaker 8 (41:15):
I'll tell pointing out.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
I will clarify what I said in a minute. But
I want you to talk about Devin Booker because he's
one of those guys. What he did. A lot of
what he did didn't necessarily show up in this box
score that you can make a case you might be
the most versatible play. All right, let me try that
again in English, the most versatile player on the team.
Give me your thoughts on Devin Booker, and I hope
he's back in twenty eight.
Speaker 8 (41:38):
Well, there were a lot of things that did show
up in the box score in the Gold Metal game.
Me have fifteen points, but to your larger point, there
were a lot of intangible Steve Kurse said the game
of training camp that he considered him the perfect FEBA
guy because he could fill any sort of role. And
I think that what's fascinating about Devin Booker is that
he has known, you know, in the NBA with his
(41:59):
time and Speene and Phoenix. Is mostly a score, But
I think there's a few things we have to consider
about Devon. In the last few seasons, he's shown that
he's more than just a score. He's been a William passer,
He's been a great defender. But I think he saw
that in full bloom with Team USA because he wasn't
going to be the main guy. He was going to
be a utility, irrotational piece. So his role changed, but
(42:23):
he mostly started. And the bottom line is he started
because he played so well with guys like Lebron James
and Steph Curry and Joel Beid and Kevin Durant. Now
to your question, will Devin Booker play in twenty twenty eight,
I would think, I mean, he would still be in
the league as an established VET, but I think there's
(42:44):
a lot of open question marks about what that team
will look like because I'm going to go on a
limb here like this is Lebron, James, Kevin Durant and
Steph Curry's last Olympic ground. I know that they like
to fight Father Time, but I think by twenty twenty eight,
father Time world long.
Speaker 2 (43:01):
So just to correct the record, I've been saying for
three weeks, I thought this team would not lose a game.
They would go eleven or oh they did, maybe the
margin bear. I don't like their style of play. I
don't think they were cohesive. I don't think they were artistic.
But when you have twelve the greatest run and jump
physical specimens on the planet, you get eight minutes to
(43:22):
go against Serbia and you see what Steph Curry did. Listen.
I think Steve Kurtz said it best. He said every
team has great players, we just have more of them.
So when I saw what Steph Curry did Thursday and
then turn around and did it again Saturday, seventeen to
three pointers, I put it on par with Joe Montana's performances.
(43:44):
Reggie Jackson in three home runs in the World Series,
Michael Jordan in the nineteen ninety eight finals, Magic when
he was a rookie at Philadelphia, and I mean it,
but it was that kind of greatness that caused it,
that caused that created the gold medal performance. Now here's
where I'm going with this. Was I entertained, Yes, because
(44:05):
there was true drama. There was a chance Serbia could
beat them. There was a chance France could beat them,
so that created natural drama. But I don't think it
was artistic basketball. I think it was drama because you
saw the relief on the faces of the coaches. The
ninety two team played with joy. These guys were so relieved.
It was like they thought they were going to jail
and found out they didn't have to.
Speaker 8 (44:27):
Well, you do make a lot of good points, but
I won't say that we can't compare nineteen ninety two
to anyone. I mean, the ships sailed, Yes, the players
on that team were great. But I think we also
keep in mind that the let's just call a spade
of spared. They were playing against scrubs in the Barcelona there,
like they.
Speaker 2 (44:48):
All Crush had three starters in the NBA including coach.
Speaker 8 (44:51):
Coach Yeah, okay, but they were about thirty five. You
fast forward, now you had four. You had Canada's roster
was we had NBA teams. You had France, who has
a generational start in the make game with Victor one Banama.
You had Serbia who has an MVP with Nicolo coach.
So yeah, okay, Crolesia had Tony ku coach and that
(45:14):
was a fun game within a game because Michael Jordan
and Scottie Pippen didn't like how Jerry Krouse is, you know,
just making Tony Kuk coach out to be the next messiah.
But my larger point is the international game has changed
so much for ninety two till now that we're not
going to see that kind of margin of victory.
Speaker 2 (45:35):
Well, fair enough.
Speaker 8 (45:36):
What I am agreeing with you is that is that
for the US to win gold this year, it required
them to play at their absolute best and rely on
their absolute best players. If Steph Curry, Kevin Durant and
Lebron James were on the team, they wouldn't have won
a gold medal. And now when you look at twenty
(45:59):
twenty eight, there's going to be questions on how do
they fill those vacancies. They're pretty hard vacancies because those
are generational stars. Now, some might say, well four years
is a long time. That's true when you look at
some of the natural possibilities that will fill that roster
with Anthony Edwards, Jason Tatum. I think Jalen Brown will
(46:21):
eventually get over and he'll be available in twenty twenty eight.
We don't know if any of those combinations or you know,
Cooper Flag will be generational stars by that point. And
that's going to make for a very intriguing Olympics, because,
as we saw in the Feeble World Cup, when they
(46:42):
don't have their best players, they're as vulnerable as any
other international team in that tournament.
Speaker 2 (46:47):
All Right, we're going to save this for a future show.
We're going to have an intellectual discussion. There's a reason
that the NBA didn't scout or will sign feeble players
thirty years ago because it was too restrictive the economic
and legal aspects transfering these players. They couldn't move, it
was almost impossible. So there were plenty of great athletes
(47:09):
back then too, to why they beat John Thompson in
nineteen ninety eight or nineteen eighty eight, we didn't win
it in two thousand and four. It's an argument. We're
going to have a different day. I'm going to give
this team their props, but they had individual guys that
were too good. Shaye Gilgis tried to dribble down low
against France time and time again playing NBA one on
one basketball, and France wasn't having it. So the bottom
(47:32):
line is, I want to give this team their flowers,
but I also want to analyze it in a slightly
different way. And I'm not one of those people that
likes to compare eras like that. But the dream team
to me, come on the nineteen Championships, twelve Hall of Famers,
anybody that this is them. They didn't see him play
and not in person. By the way, I want to
talk about Lebron winning the MVP. I think he's very deserving.
(47:53):
He was extremely consistent. He was a force of nature
throughout the entire tournament, including in the blowouts. Mark, you
had their first three games they won by a total
in ninety six points. So they did win by those
types of margins this year. But let's talk about Curry.
Could you make a case for Curry as the MVP, Mark,
because without what he did in the final five minutes
again Serbia in the final four minute Saturday, they would
(48:15):
not have won.
Speaker 8 (48:17):
Yeah, I mean it's a tough decision, but I will
say this. I mean when you look at Lebron, Steph
and Durant, if any of those three players weren't on
the team, they won't have won gold. And so yes,
obviously Steph has that case with how great of a
shooting performance he had these past two games that he
made Steph Curry type baskets when Tmusa needed the most.
(48:38):
But I think if we're going to reward the MVP,
he got to go with the one who was consistent
from start to finish, and that was Lebron James. I mean,
Kevin Durant didn't play any exhibitions because of his injury,
and he was very prolific coming off the bench, but
Lebron had a bigger role as a starter. Steph Curry.
He was still valuable as a for spacer the gravity
(49:01):
of the passing. But Lebron James was the best player
at the beginning and he was the best player at
the end. So I have no problem with him winning
the MVP award. I mean, he was almost a walking
triple double every single night he was.
Speaker 2 (49:15):
He was a force of nature. He lit the fire,
he set a tone his defense, Ye, he's and he
shot the ball pretty well. All those things. Finally, Mark,
I want to talk about Victor Wembinyama. Nine months ago,
I questioned whether or not he would be able to
handle the big bodies, how he would deal with ballhawking defenders,
what his perimeter defense would look like defending wings in
(49:36):
the league. Look what the kid did on Saturday. Is
he the next face of the league when the big
three you just mentioned move along? Because Wemby found ways
to crack open the defense Saturday. He used his size
well in the defensive end. He had I think he'd
made three three pointers, showed a lot of poise for
a young man. He's come a long way. Is he
the face of the league in the future.
Speaker 8 (49:58):
Well, he will be the face in the league in
the future, but I don't think it's next season or
even when Lebron James Kevin Durant retire, only because you
look at the interim. Who are the teams that are
favored to win championships right now? The Boston Celtics, the
Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Timberwolves, throw the Denver Nuggets in there,
(50:18):
and so I fully expect that Victor one Binama is
going to continue to show that he's a star. The
Spurs will be better now that they have some good
veterans like Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes. But I don't
think it's like next season the Spurs are back to
what they were during the Tim Duncan era, where they're
making playoffs. I think they won't be in the lottery,
(50:41):
but I don't see them making a deep playoff run
if at all. So yeah, he will be the face
of the NBA, but I would say he'll be the
face of the NBA by the time the next Olympics
come around.
Speaker 2 (50:52):
I want to throw one more name, Matt you final thing.
I want to give my flowers to Jolianbiid, who joking
he said two weeks ago. Maybe I wasn't joking. The
should left him home. I thought he was a good
but Mark, I want to get your thoughts. But honestly,
I thought he was a great foil against Jokic on Thursday.
He got some big buckets in the fourth quarter when
he needed. I know the French are angry with Embiid
(51:14):
because he, you know, received French citizenship a couple of
years ago, but then he came and played for the US.
Could you make a case without winby on the floor
Thursday and the key plays he made, uh, Serbia might
have prevailed.
Speaker 8 (51:29):
Yeah, and I would say the same thing, uh, you know,
with how he played against France as he played on Serbia.
He played, he had some big performances on both ends
of the floor. He didn't have a perfect Olympic run.
But I think that the Team USA, they're very mindful
of why they recruit him in the first place. He
showing Embiid obviously, but two Uh, you know, they fell
(51:52):
short in the fieldal World Cup last year because they
didn't have a traditional big man. They needed size because
that's how you know, a lot of the inn national
players are. You know, their teams are constructed. So I
think Anthony Davis bam out of Bio collectively had better games,
but for matchup purposes, they still needed a traditional big
(52:12):
man when he was going up a traditional big man.
I think the good thing and the underrated thing about
Team USA is their calling hard was having defensive versatility
and that really was I think epitomized with the center
position where they had Joel Embiid be that traditional guy
to get physical and even if he had limitations, it
(52:33):
was still valuable because of that presence. But the good
thing is they could rely on more mobile bigs like
ad and out of Bio so that they could, you know,
cover other types of defensive assignments and offensive matchups.
Speaker 2 (52:47):
Last thing, Mark, I know a lot was made to
the Jason Tatum situation. My belief is to be back
on the team in twenty twenty eight and play a
key role.
Speaker 1 (52:55):
Your thoughts, yeah, help me back.
Speaker 8 (52:57):
I mean four years from now is a lot and
he'll be even a better player, no doubt. I'm sure
he's frustrated he didn't play a lot, but I don't
think that he's going to you know, stew about it
or anything. It might make for good motivation during the
regular season the NBA, But all these players knew what
they signed up for that when you're with USA, your
(53:18):
role is going to change. And clearly there was a
definitive and very strong separation between the talent level of Lebron,
Durant and Steph versus everybody else, and so everybody else's
role was going to be up for grabs. Those were
only the three players that they knew they were going
to be the guy, and in Durant's case, he came
(53:41):
off the bench not because Steve Kurr is trying to
be cute, it was he had an injury and they
wanted to manage his workload, and Durant was okay with that.
So if I'm Jason Tatum, I'm telling you know his
close ones, including with all due respect to his mom,
to just you know, lay well and not make a.
Speaker 2 (53:57):
Big yeah yeah he Mark, great stuff. Next week we'll
get into the meat of what promises to be a
pretty fun upcoming NBA season.
Speaker 8 (54:07):
Looking forward at my friend.
Speaker 2 (54:09):
Thanks so much, as always, Mark, enjoy your week ahead.

Michigan's latest middle finger back to the NCAA. But speaking
of middle fingers, Den, I'm Sanders. I've always liked a lot,
but this is gonna be This might be a long season,

(55:28):
viral with reporters. Let's give it a listen.
Speaker 4 (55:32):
Eric Christensen with CBS Sports Colorado.
Speaker 9 (55:35):
Tyler, I'm not doing none with CBS.
Speaker 2 (55:37):
Next question, I go with you. This is above that.
Speaker 9 (55:41):
I got none to do with you. I got love
for you, I appreciate, respect you, and got none to
do with you. They know what they did.
Speaker 2 (55:46):
I'm here at Denver, not National.
Speaker 9 (55:48):
You are who you are, CBS, the CBS all right
with you. I respect you, That's why I told you.
I'm looking at you in the as a man. I
respect you, I got love for you. But what they
did was foul.
Speaker 2 (56:01):
And here's the thing, and thanks Bree for grabbing that.
Here's the thing. What's happening now is the bloom is
off the rose Man, the honeymoon is way over. They
started out three and oh last year of Colorado. They
were the rage. They were the place to be. They
were like Club fifty four New York with football. Now
(56:22):
what's happening now is Dion Sanders has legitimate doubters and
they are standing up front and center, not afraid to talk.
And that press conference wasn't the only one where Dion
has been combative. I think it was. I think it
was Friday. It might have been Friday, maybe Thursday. Actually
(56:43):
it was Friday. You heard the sound. But Bree gave
us where Dion refused to take questions from the one journalist,
but then he took on another one over a perceived bias.
That one happened to do with not a guy from CBS,
but a gentleman by the name of Sean Keeler the
Denver Post, who has more than once been somewhat critical
(57:08):
of Dion Sanders and his approach at Colorado. Way back
in April, Keeler wrote a column that was criticizing Dion
Sanders because at that point they were having somewhat of
a mass exodus of players into the transfer portal, and
Keeler went on to imply that the reason the players
(57:29):
were transferring was because of Dion Sanders. Dean's not a
stupid person, He's got a long memory. He remembered that
Sean Keeler had written that article, and apparently later in
that same press conference, he would not let Keeler ask
(57:50):
his question. Instead, he took on Keeler, who's a Denver reporter,
and he said, look, why are you always talking bad
about me in the program? He confronted Keeller about why
do you bother covering the team? Even because you don't
like Dion Sanders. You don't like me, there's a perceived dislike.
(58:10):
Why do you bother covering us? The quote was you
don't like us? Man? Why do you do this to yourself?
Which is the exact question Sanders asked Keeler, because no,
I'm serious, why do you do this? It would be
hard for me to really engage in someone I don't
like or something I don't like. I'm just asking why
(58:30):
what did I do? You're always on the attack? What
did we do? Okay, now this is the Denver media,
which is not that bad. I have Darren McKee on
my show and Chad Andrews. Good guys. They're honest, they're smart,
but they're nothing like the New York media. Come on, man,
can you imagine if Dion worked in a different market
(58:52):
where it was a little bit more you know, caustic.
So Keeller responded, or he attempted to respond by saying, look,
I got no personal issues with Dion Sanders, and I'm
not on the attack. And then Dion, you know, was
holding court. He said he wanted to help and the
(59:13):
attacks are not normal. And despite the fact that Keeler
said all he had was a football question this time,
Sanders refused to take the question. At least he engaged
with Keeler. The sound you just heard that Bree Davis
was from a CBS reporter named Eric Christensen. You heard
in that SoundBite. Sanders completely brushed him off, immediately brushed
(59:36):
him off so he would not take any questions. He said, man,
I ain't got nothing to do with you. I got
love for you. Really, he's got a funny way of
showing it. I respect you, I appreciate you. Ain't got
nothing to do with you. They know what they did,
Christiansen pointed out, though he was also local in Denver,
but it was not even affiliated with the CBS Sports
(59:57):
National Operation. Sanders didn't care. We don't know who you
are CBS. To CBS, whether they did was foul, well,
I actually don't know. I don't really know what CBS
did exactly to piss off Dion Sanders. But apparently CBS
had a website again many many months ago that ranked
(01:00:21):
every Power Conference coach from one to sixty eight. So
they ranked the coaches from one to sixty eight. And
apparently in this website I haven't seen it, just heard
about it, out of sixty eight coaches, Sanders ranked sixty first,
so he was in like the bottom seven. And I
(01:00:41):
don't think this reporter, Eric Christensen had anything to do
with that, and he said, look, you know, I'm here
in Denver. We had nothing to do with that report. Man.
Sanders didn't care. He didn't care. He is never been
shy about engaging reporters that he think provide negative coverage
(01:01:05):
of the team. All right, keep an eye on this
if Colorado starts to lose, and if they don't get
off the start they had in the twenty twenty three season. Remember,
they open up against North Dakota State, which is a
is a tough team that will run the ball and
win in the trenches. Do I think Colorado's gonna lose
(01:01:25):
a game. No, But the following week Colorado goes to Nebraska,
and if you look at Colorado's schedule, they could start
o under five hundred and things could wear a thin,
and if they don't improve on a four and eight
record last year, this could really start to go off
the reels. I never thought i'd see this. I gotta
tell you, I like Deon Sanders, and he's done a
lot in the world. But sometimes you find out about
(01:01:50):
people in odd ways, and I'm a little surprised he's
going on the offensive so much. And the season that
hasn't even started yet could be a poor tent for
things to come good for our business. But you know,
I'm already very much looking forward to that game against
North Dakota State here coming up two weeks from next
I believe it's two weeks from next. Saturday might be
(01:02:13):
a Friday game. I'm not sure. I have to look
it up. Coming up another coach who has a contentious
deal not with the media but with the NCAA god
by the name of Jim Harbaugh. I'm gonna tell you
what's going on there, because it's starting to rear its
head even though hardball is long gone for mann Arbor.
But first, let's go back to our guy, the chef
Kevin Wyre.
Speaker 7 (01:02:33):
At the Olympic Games in Paris. It is the US
men's basketball team taking yet another gold medal, the fifth
straight one they have won going back to two thousand
and eight, and that redeemed team. It is a ninety
eight eighty seven victory against Franz Steph Curry. A big
part of that is he makes it rain going eight
to twelve from beyond the three point zo for them
(01:02:55):
coming down the stretch to help secure the Olympic gold
for the United States. Dates and on the women's side
of the things, it will be the same two countries
Sunday morning going for the gold medal, the United States
and France. Tip off of that game set for nine
to thirty Eastern time. The US women's soccer team gold
medal winners after they shut out Brazil won nothing and
(01:03:16):
track the American men and women take home the gold
in the four by four hundred meter relay and the
United States thirty eight gold medals. They do trail China
by one. They have thirty nine. France does have sixteen
gold and sixty two medals overall. In Major League Baseball,
it is the Mariners shutting up the Mets four nothing,
Logan Gilbert seven scoreless sittings with six strikeouts. The Astros
(01:03:39):
beat the Red Sox five to four. As you're on
Alvarez two home runs for Houston, so it is still
a virtual tie atop of the AL West. Houston is
in front by percentage points, but they are in a
virtual tie with the Mariners for first place. The Dodgers
hand Paul Skins his second loss of the season as
they beat the Pirates four to one. Padres that last
to Marwe eight in extra innings, so the Dodgers lead
(01:04:02):
in the NLS still sits at two in a half games.
Elsewhere in Major League Baseball, the Yankees shut out the
Rangers eight nothing, Blue Jays fall to the Athletics won nothing.
Giants beat the Tigers three to one. Rangers over the
Yankees in the second game with that doubleheader nine to four.
(01:04:23):
Nationals and Angels go to extra innings. Washington wins at
five to four. Brewers over the Reds won nothing. Guardians
top the Twins two to one. The Royals beat the
Cardinals eight to three, Orioles over the Rays seven to five.
Battle of the Windy City go to the Cubs, they
win it three to one. Braves top the Rockies eleven
to eight, Diamondbacks over the Phillies eleven to one. And
(01:04:43):
in the NFL preseason, first week of the full slate
of preseason games, and Caleb Williams making his debut for
the Bears look very impressive, completing four to seven passes
for ninety five yards. In the couple of those incompletions
that could have been caught, they were dropped, so he
looked very impressive. The Bears beat the Bills thirty three
to six. JJ McCarthy not a bad outing for the Vikings.
(01:05:05):
They beat the Raiders twenty four to twenty three's McCarthy
throws for one hundred and eighty eight yards and a
couple of touchdowns. Also did have himself in interception. Malik
Willis five to seven and thirty eight yards for Tennessee
as they beat the forty nine Ers seventeen to thirteen,
back to you, Bernie.
Speaker 2 (01:05:21):
All right, chef for them up those vocal cords. We'll
see you in an hour. So I just used the
phraseology middle finger, because that's exactly what I think the
University of Michigan just did. Back to the NCAA, let
me set this up. The Michigan Wolverines open up. The
(01:05:42):
defending national champion Michigan Wolverines opened up their season on
August thirty first, Saturday, August thirty first, against Fresno State.
Now why is that significant? Let me try to put
this in the proper order. Michigan announced yesterday that Jim
(01:06:03):
Harbaugh will serve as the Michigan Wolverine's honorary captain that day. Well,
as you have observed in the last few days and
in the last few months, Jim Harbaugh the last few years,
Harbaugh has been highly scrutinized, and this move to name
him honorary captain Saturday, Autust thirty first comes in kind
(01:06:24):
of in the midst of very considerable uncertainty which surrounds
the potential of the Wolveriness football future as the NCAA
continues to investigate the allegations of science stealing under Harbaugh's regime.
By the way, Netflix will have a thing on Connor
Stallion's justice. Last Wednesday, Jim Harbaugh, who's obviously been with
the Chargers now since January twenty fourth, personally received a
(01:06:47):
four year show cause order from the NCAA, which stems
from a separate case involving in permission impermissible recruiting practices.
He's bought a kid a cheeseburger during COVID, and you know,
the cheeseburger is always worse than the cover up. And
that's exactly what happened. Now. What do I think it's
gonna happen to Michigan football from here on out? Not
(01:07:08):
a lot. There's not going to be any retroactive stuff.
They're not going to vacate wins. They're not going to
vacate a championship or the Big Ten champion, none of that.
And I think the investigation is going to draw it.
I was just in Michigan this week. I talked to
some people still very connected to the program. I think
this will drag into the spring. Worst case scenario, maybe sure,
own Morris suspended a game or two, but I think
I actually think this is going to drag into the spring,
(01:07:29):
and there'll be something happened, maybe in the spring, minor
slap on the wrist, but the fact that Michigan did
this is again a middle finger back to the NCAA.
Because the NCAA announced again a four year show cause
order for Jim Harbaugh for, as I said, the impermissible
contact that he had with recruits during the COVID pandemic
(01:07:51):
when they were even more restricted. What does that mean?
What does the show cause mean? It pans in from
working in college athletics until August twenty twenty eight. Are
we really doing this? What's Carl Harball got a five
year contract with the Chargers, so we can't work in
colls the next four years. Yeah, that's really a shame.
He was looking at maybe latch on at Bowling Green
in two years. What are we doing here? All right?
(01:08:14):
Everybody saw that Harball left the alma mater to coach
the Chargers after the National championship, and you know, he's
being accused of being engaged in unethical conduct and failed
to promote an atmosphere of compliance and that he violated
head coach responsibile obligations. He was suspended six games last year,
(01:08:35):
and the NCAA already put Michigan on three years of
probation along with the final recruiting limits, after they had
sort of a negotiated resolution what six eight months ago.
The Harball did not go along with this agreement. He
disputed the allegations. He very much disputed the allegations that
he failed to cooperate with investigators. So his case, Harbaugh's
(01:08:55):
case was handled separately. There was a quote from me
I said quote. The panel noted that Harball's intentional disregard
for NCAA legislation and unethical conduct amplified the severity of
the case and prompted the panel to classify Harbaugh's case
as Level one aggravated with penalties to include a four
(01:09:17):
year show cause. There's some truth there because Harball refused
to turn over his cell phone. Now, this recruiting case
is separate from the NCAA's investigation into the in person
scouting and science stealing allegations that really sort of overshadowed
Michigan season, especially as you got into November and Harball
(01:09:39):
had a three game suspension that was handed down by
the Big Ten Conference. So people should not conflate the two.
You had the cheeseburger deal during COVID and then you
had the science stealing with Connor stallions. Again, a show
cause penalty means that if a school wants to hire
a coach that is serving that penalty, which are Ball is, well,
(01:10:01):
they're going to have to appear before the NCAA Committee
on Infractions to explain why he wants to do so.
The nca their order for Harball started Wednesday and it
runs through market calendars August sixth, twenty twenty eight. It
again will require a school that would want to hire
Jim Harbaugh to suspend him for the first full season.
(01:10:26):
I'm shaking my head. I'm scratching my head. Okay. Then
after that, by the way, just so you understand what
this means, Harbaugh would still be barred from athletics related
activities including team travel, practice, video study, recruiting, and team
meetings until the order expires. Hello, he's the head coach
of the Chargers. What makes anybody think he's going back
(01:10:48):
to college in the next four years? If ever, Hardball
spocal reporters and talked about you know, I was raised
not to lie and steal and all that. I'm going
to tell you what I'm going to get to that
just a second. And I also want to share with
you what Harball's attorney, Tom Marhers said, because this has
gone from the ridiculous to the even more ridiculous, and
(01:11:11):
it's worth knowing about because you have to wonder now
and I'm not gonna be sticking enough for Harbaugh, but
as the NCAA being a little petty. By the way,
shortly after the show tonight, our podcast will be going up.
If you missed any of tonight's show, be sure to
check out the podcast. Just search Fox Sports Radio wherever
you get your podcasts. Be sure to follow, rate and
review the podcast. Again, just search Fox Sports Radio wherever
(01:11:34):
you get your podcasts. You see the show posted right
after we get off the air. Coming up, we continue.
I want you to know what's really going on here
because they talk about it, but people don't really understand it,
nor should they need to worry about it. They have lives,
but you're gonna hear about it. So I want to
share with you what's going on. And I want to
share with you what Michigan's athletic director said about this,
(01:11:57):
and Harball's attorney, Tom Maher was set up. Tom I
said about this, it's worth Knowing bym Bernie Frida Wor

Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. We're back on
the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Coming to lie
from the tarret dot com studios here in Las Vegas.
Come on top of the hour. Well, last week I
(01:12:17):
previewed the NFC East, I have Philadelphia winning it and
the NFC North I have a coin flip between Detroit
and Green Bay. Tonight at one am Pacific, four am Eastern,
I will preview the NFC South and the NFC West.
Back to Jim Harball, who was given the show cause
penalty this week. Michigan immediately responded by saying, he's our
(01:12:40):
honorary captain for our first home game against Fresno State.
Harball's attorney, he said apparently he said the coach he's
referring to. Harball was not invited to participate in the
settlement process, nor was Jim Harborough, even where agreement had
been reached between the school and the NCAA, and Harbas's
(01:13:01):
attorney went on to blast the NCAA's punishment. Here's exactly
what he said. Quote the way I see it from
Coach Harbaugh's perspective, Today's committee on a Fraction's decision. Well,
that's like being in college and getting a letter from
your high school saying you've been suspended because you didn't
sign your yearbook. If I were in Coach Harbaugh's shoes
(01:13:23):
and I had an eight million dollar contract as the
head coach of the Chargers, I wouldn't pay any attention
to the findings of a kangaroo court which claims to
represent the principles of the nation's most flagrant repeat violator
of federal anti trust laws. A lot of meat on
the bone there and some legal lees. He went deep
into the cookie jar on that. But he's not necessarily wrong.
(01:13:44):
He's not wrong. Again, it just makes no sense to me.
It's not like Harbaugh's you know, cal State Fullerton is
going to bring back football and they're looking for a
new football coach. What are we doing here? I mean,
it's like it's really petty petty, and even Michigan's athletic
director Ward Manual and him and Harbaugh didn't always see
(01:14:07):
eye to eye, but he made the point to say, look,
Michigan's already accepted the sanctions and they've served many of
the penalties, and he, you know, Wandal says, we're working
on improving some processes and we're focused on the future,
and we do have a commitment to integrity and compliance
on a go forward basis. The sign stealing case is
(01:14:28):
still open, and like I said, that's gonna take months
to resolve. That's why I don't think you're gonna see
anything here. Happened to Shiran Moore during the season, not
that it can't change. I don't think it's going to
be adjudicated till the spring. And when you consider multiple
infraction cases in such a short time period, you could
you might since the NCAA and their ire has already
(01:14:52):
been raised, they could treat Michigan as a repeat offender.
They could open the school up to harsherd penalties. But
I'm convinced, based on people I talked to, that there
will be nothing retroactive. They're not going to vacate any wins, championships,
Big ten, national whatever, And you know, the Committee on
(01:15:13):
Infractions will have to interpret what happened here with Cheron
Moore allegedly he erased some text messages. I'm not sure.
And uh, you know, there was an attorney out of
Birmingham named Jay z l and he has handled a
lot of NCAA cases. So it's gonna come down to interpretation.
(01:15:34):
And as I said, the Michigan's new coach, Cherroan Moore,
he's actually facing allegations now he violated NCAA rules that
was related to the investigation. And this is back to
this scouting and sign stealing thing. And as Connor stallionsing's
gonna hit, it's gonna drop on Netflix here I think
in about eighteen days. Again, Charon Moore has been accused
(01:15:55):
of deleting text messages and apparently, again I don't know,
I'm just based on what I've been told. Those text
messages they were with Connor Stallions. So Connor Stallions, as
you may recall his name, came to prominence right before Thanksgiving.
He was sort of this low level recruiting staffer who coordinated,
(01:16:17):
you know, this kind of elaborate off campus advanced scouting operation.
This is around the time the investigation was open. And
according to the you know what the NCAA has published
in their draft, they recommended a less serious level two
violation for Sheereon Moore and said that the messages between
More and Stallions were recovered and that the coach actually
(01:16:37):
provided into the NCAA. Now. Sheereon Moore, as you recall,
was the offensive coordinator for Michigan last year and he
was promoted to head coach after he took over as
the interim head coach during the three games that Harbaugh
was suspended against. I believe Ohio State, Penn State, and
(01:16:58):
maybe Maryland one them all. And so Harball makes his
return to the NFL. Sure On Moore was the natural
successor because again he filled in as the acting head coach,
and he got the job done, won all four games,
including the season final against Ohio State. And look, this
has been the source of great teeth gnashing among people.
(01:17:21):
NCAA says that in person scouting is banned, and it
didn't used to be, but I think they changed it
in nineteen ninety four, but that led to Thursday's diet trap,
and Harball says, I do not apologize quote I did
not participate. I was not aware nor complicit in those
set allegations. The UNCA noted Harball could not recall meeting
(01:17:42):
with recruits, despite confirmation from at least one of his
own staff members blah blah blah had a Hamburger for breakfast.
Things stood out, and there was apparently a lot of
credible information according to the NCA that Harball's denials are
not credible. And my midnight hour segment I do under
Bernie Fat Show Friday night at midnight, this was a
topic and I asked the callers, do you believe Jim
(01:18:06):
Harbaugh truly knew nothing about the Connors Stallions situation and
the in person scotting and this sign stealing scandal and
all the above, and about seventy percent of the collar
She said, no, oh, come on, I'm not blind. I
mean Harball, we like Carball. We did good things at Michigan,
(01:18:28):
YadA yah. But he's such a task master and he's
in control, and he's a bull sham Beckler disciple. For
him not to do anything now he made you know,
there may be some plausible milk deniability in terms of
his actual hands on involvement, but to not know anything
that was a hard one for people to swallow. So
I think seventy percent of the people didn't necessarily believe.
(01:18:48):
So there you have it. You know you'll hear about
the Harball thing. It's just going to come up, because
that's what happens in these stories when your high profile
like Jim Harbaugh and Michigan are the defending champions. All right,
let's dive back into the NFL. Do a little preview
in the NFC. Keep it locked. It's Bernie Fraddles Show
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:19:07):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:19:10):

(01:19:31):
Tyrack dot com the way tied buying should be well.
Last Saturday, I previewed the NFC East. I like Philly
to win it. I gave all the reasons why, and
I think Dallas is gonna fall off. I've got him
going eight and nine. Meanwhile, the NFC North, I believe
(01:19:52):
Green Bays for real, and I believe Jordan loves for
real and I love that defense with seven first rounders
that really run it into shape last year. But Detroit's
I believe in them as well, So I think it's
a coin flip between those two. We will see tonight.
Let's talk about the NFC South because the Atlanta Falcons
(01:20:14):
have come under a lot of scrutiny because they go
out and they hire or check that they go out
and they sign Kirk Cousins, who's coming off of major injury,
to a four hundred check that four year, one hundred
eighty million dollar deal, and it's guaranteed, and and there's
(01:20:36):
no there's no real expectation. You don't know how much
he's going to significantly upgrade the position of quarterback to
the degree that it was with Matt Ryan when it
went into decline back in twenty twenty one. That was
Matt Ryan's final year. And the Falcons have had sort
(01:20:57):
of a odd approach to building their roster because then
you know, after signing Panics, they go out and they
they draft Michael Pennix Junior. You can't play them both
at the same time. Now, Michael Penis Junior is probably
the future. He's got mobility, he flashes, he's got arm strength.
(01:21:17):
He's more talented basically on paper than Kirk Cousins, but
Kirk Cousins is a veteran. Here's the thing, and I'm
actually picking the Falcons to win the NFC South. First
of all, the South is a stinky division. I think
they only gonna be nine and eight will win this division.
I truly believe that. And the Falcons, if you look
(01:21:38):
at their roster, they have plenty of talent on paper.
And I like Raheem Morse. This is his second goal
around Atlanta. He was the interim coach three years ago
and then they didn't give him the job, but they
played hard under him. And and you know, the conventional
(01:21:59):
wisdom with people thought the Falcons were gonna hire Bill Belichick.
Well obviously they didn't do that. So you could say
that Raheem Morris got the job over Belichick. He wouldn't
necessarily be wrong. But listen, there are two things that
the Falcons really have going for them. There is a
real kindred spirit between Raheem Morris and his players. He's
(01:22:20):
constantly praised by his players, not just in Atlanta, but
players elsewhere around the league where Raheem Morris has worked
and I know this is always sort of an oxymoron
in the National Football League. There are no week sisters
in the National Football League, But when you crunch the numbers,
the Falcons do have the benefit of having the NFL's
(01:22:41):
weakest schedule this year, and between Week three and Week nine,
the Falcons will play five home games and face all
of its divisional foals. So if they put together a
stretch there, that could put them in the catbird seed.
The Falcons last one the NFC side in twenty sixteen,
(01:23:01):
and you remember what happened then they got to the
Super Bowl. They led Tom Brady and the Patriots twenty
eight to three at halftime, and you know what happened then.
I like the Falcons to win this division. I like
to coach, I like the roster competition, I like their talent.
They do have a relatively weak schedule, and look, it
(01:23:23):
ain't gonna be New Orleans since Drew Brees retired. They're
twenty five and twenty six. They're an under five hundred team,
and they'll be under five hundred this year. Best. I
think you can see them going. He's eight and nine.
There's no reason to expect New Orleans can do much
more of that. They've churned players in and out. They've
moved quarterbacks in and out. Derek carr is exactly what
(01:23:44):
I thought he would be. Everything I wouldn't, you know,
everything he wasn't in less right, everything I expected he
wouldn't be in less. I screwed that up. But you
know what I tried to mean. Okay, they got a
new OC. The roster isn't really no different than last year.
They lose the right tackle for the season due to
chronic knee issues. They have a new offensive quarter coordinator
(01:24:07):
in Clinton Kubiak. I don't know what he's gonna do
to create much of an attack here. I'm not big
on Dennis Allen, their head coach. And look, you know
what Derek carriis. He was sixty three and seventy nine
as he started with the Raiders. He's a good human being,
not a good quarterback. And now we're hearing that Alvin Kamara,
probably maybe the best player on the team, is disgruntled.
(01:24:29):
He's got contract issues of his own. It's under the radar.
You don't hear about him because you're too busy hearing
about McCarthy and Dak and everybody else. But without a
healthy productive Camara, the Saints don't have a prayer. Oh well,
see what I did there. I didn't even realize I
did that Saints prayer? Did you like that one? Mark
Saints per nevermind? I think the Saints are going eight
(01:24:51):
to nine. Falcons are going nine to eight. That leads
us to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now you may not
realize this, yes, but I think you have a You
have to give a tip of the cap to the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers because they've been in the postseason every
year since twenty nineteen, nineteen, twenty twenty one, twenty two,
(01:25:12):
and twenty three. Now parlos with Brady, but give it
up to Baker Mayfield. Give it up to Baker Bayfield,
and I think you can be realistic that they're not great,
They're not bad. Here is the caveat. Yes, yes, they've
(01:25:34):
won the division a couple times, but they were like
under five hundred winning the division. So they're only eighteen
and nineteen over the past two seasons. It's still made
the playoffs both years, and again they've benefited by being
in the NFC South. However, the Bucks spent about, you know,
millions of dollars almost one hundred million dollars this spring,
(01:25:56):
most of that going to Baker Mayfield. But staying, continuing
to win in this division isn't gonna be as easy.
They have sort of the opposite of the Falcons. In
between Week two and ten, Tampa Bay. They will have
three divisional games and four more against all the teams
that reached last season's conference championship round. That's tough duty,
(01:26:21):
think about it. We're talking about, you know, Kansas City
and Baltimore and the forty nine ers and the line
tough duty. I think Tampa Bay will be competitive. I
think they'll be better than the Saints, but I see
them going eight to nine as well. So I got
the Falcons going nine to eight. I got the Saints
(01:26:43):
going eight and nine. I got the maybe the Saints
have goes seven and ten. I don't know, Bucks going
eight and nine, which leaves the Carolina Panthers. Now. I
think the Carolina Panthers may have a good future. I
love their new coach, Dave Knalis. He is, in fact
the quarterback Whisperer. If you don't believe me, he was
in Russell Wilson's are all those years in Seattle when
(01:27:05):
Russell Wilson had the most productive years he's had, he
resurrected a Gino Smith and he also had a lot
of positive vibes last year in Tampa Bay where he
was presiding over Baker Mayfield. And now he gets Bryce Young,
and I am of the belief Bryce Young is gonna
(01:27:25):
make it in this league. He's off to a slow start.
Everything went wrong in Carolina. Carolina won two games last year,
so even if they win four games this year, they
double the win total. So look, there are no goals
in Carolina. Dave Canalis has to do what he does,
which bring his positive vibes develop Bryce Young the same
way he did with Gino Smith and Russell Wilson and
(01:27:46):
got Baker Mayfield one hundred million dollars. And he's a
good man, a good man, He's an LA guy, and
he's the type of he's got to get a little
Tony Dungee in him and that type of vibe. And
I you can only say good things about Tony Dungee.
So that's where I see the NFC South, not a
world beater division, not an each should win it. And
(01:28:08):
it's Atlanta's for the taking. Based on their roster, based
on their coach and based on a relatively weak schedule,
again by NFL standards. By the math, they have the
league's weakest schedule, and they have that five game home
stretch between Week three and nine that could allow them
to get out in front of the path. Coming up,
(01:28:30):
we're going to talk about the NFC West, a decidedly
tougher division, but I think only two teams really have
a chance of winning it will really only one team
has a chance of winning it, but that doesn't mean
it's not going to be a slugfest. By the way,

minutes away. Top of the hour, two am Pacific, five
m Eastern. The Dance Sensation sweep of the Nation. What
kind of brand new fool are you? Followed by what
my name? So next week I'll start to preview the
(01:30:18):
AFC the NFC South. I got the Atlanta Falcons winning
it at nine and eight. After that put him in
a blender, except for Carolina the NFC West. I realize
what's happening with Brandon Ayuk is not pretty, but I
am of the belief that when all is said and done,
more will be said than done. And Brandon Ayuk, remember
(01:30:39):
he's under contract, so he's legally bound to play for
the Niners this year. The question is not this year.
The question is the future. And the question of course is,
you know, do they pay him what he wants? See
It's it's an interesting dilemma because the Niners want him
(01:31:00):
and need him, they don't want to pay him what
he wants. But I think they're gonna keep the least
for this year and possibly well into the future. If
it was just about money, you could have gone to
New England. And he also Kyle Boston trade to Cleveland.
So I think the Niners, who've been knocking on the
door for the super Bowl for quite a while now,
(01:31:20):
and ben to a couple, it just can't get past
Patrick Mahomes. I still think they win the NFC West.
They're just too good. Brock Purdy, is that good. If
you don't want to give me your flowers, that's on you,
no problem. But this team is still poised. They got
plenty of thoroughbreds to make another deep playoff run, maybe
even win the Super Bowl again. This year. They had
(01:31:41):
another near missed in Super Bowl fifty eight. And the
Niners get out of the gate against schedule can matter
their first six games. They only play one playoff team
one playoff team. So let's say they start out five
and win whatever. I don't I don't want to do that.
By the Niners are a thirteen win team, and I
don't see anybody else in this division that can win
(01:32:03):
thirteen games. Now, that doesn't mean the Rams aren't gonna
be good. I think the Rams are gonna be good,
but they're not gonna win thirteen games. Ten and seven,
eleven and six. We'll see. For the second straight year.
You gotta be honest. As great a job as Sean
McVay does, they enter the season with major questions on defense.
This time it's due to the retirement of Aaron Donald. Yes,
(01:32:26):
that's huge, and that's also done forget. I would just
see in the praises of Raheem Morris in Atlanta, Well,
who do you think the Rams defensive coordinator has been
the last three years? Raheem Morris been the recordinator since
twenty twenty one. Now, the Rams did invest heavily on
the defensive side of the ball in the draft, and
(01:32:46):
they did put some resources into the offensive line. And
if Cooper cup can stay healthy and plays first full
season since clear back in twenty twenty one, and he
had showed up and showed out in the Super Bowl
as well, and you combine him with Puka Nakua, you've
got a tremendous receiver tandem. If Nakua can be anywhere
(01:33:09):
near what he did as a rookie last year. He
didn't even have to replicate that. The Rams also have
an interesting schedule quirk, but this is a good one.
In the month of October, the Rams are home for
the entire month, or they're playing at Sofi Stadium the
entire month. I think the Rams are a ten win team,
but they're not a thirteen win team, so I cannot
(01:33:29):
pick against the forty nine ers. That leaves the Arizona Cardinals.
Have a hard time believing the Cardinals get to five hundred.
They got a new coaching staff, and you know, well,
I'll tell you what they had the new coaching staff
(01:33:50):
last year. I should point that out, Kyler Murray missed
a bunch of time. They basically rebooted the whole roster.
Last year. The didn't have a good record, but they
were tough out every week. They're going to be the
same way this year. The Arizona Cardinals are not a
bad team, but I see him as going seven to
ten ish, eight and nine ish. I think Kyler Murray
(01:34:12):
should be physically recovered from the ACLA tore back in
twenty twenty two. And if you look at the Cardinals drafts,
they had seven players or they had seven picks in
the first ninety overall selections and they did well. They
drafted very well, including Marvin Harrison. JUNI you're the prize
(01:34:34):
wide receiver out of Ohio State. So I think this
is a team Arizona that is not a threat to
win the division. They are not a playoff team. But
if you get on the field with them, they're not
gonna lay down. They're going to be a tough out.
They got a you know, they went through their big
metamorphosis last year. They're just not good enough. They're not
deep enough, they're not talented. Questions, can Kyler Murray be
(01:34:56):
healthy and return to form after ACL and they're the
opposite of the forty nine ers in their first six
weeks in the With regard to the Arizona Cardinals schedule,
in their first six games, five of those teams are
playoff teams. That's tough, all right. So I think if
(01:35:18):
you're an Arizona Cardinals fan, what you look to do
is compete this year, can continue to develop your roster
and look to have a springboard season in twenty twenty five.
But again, I want to emphasize this. You'll see this
throughout the year. Cardinals will play hard. I think they'll
give teams a tussle. They're just not good enough to
(01:35:39):
They're just not good enough to be an over five
hundred teams, certainly not good enough to win the division.
So got the Niners like thirteen and four, of the
Rams probably ten and seven, eleven and six, maybe Cardinals
seven and ten, maybe eight nine. That leaves the Seahawks.
What happened to the Seahawks, Well, they got new coaches,
they got a brand new playbook, a brand new culture
that doesn't really you know, look, that's tough, all right.
(01:36:04):
They're now coached by Mike McDonald, thirty seven years old.
The youngest head coach in the National Football League. And
this is a group that's been ineffective defensively and they
haven't been able to run the ball. And that's a
bad parlay. And if you don't run the ball and
(01:36:25):
you can't stop the run, well, you know what's going
to be different in twenty twenty four from what it
was in twenty twenty three. This could be a long
season for Seattle. They might This might be a five
to six win season. It's not going to be a
playoff season.
Speaker 10 (01:36:41):
It's not.
Speaker 2 (01:36:41):
They're certainly not going to win the division. And again
another odd scheduling quirk. In November and December, the second
half of the season, they have three home games. That's it,
three home games. So I like San Francisco to win
the NFCU West, we'll call it thirteen and four. Of
the Rams to finish second, we'll call it ten and seven,
(01:37:03):
maybe eleven and six. The Arizona Cardinals to be plucky
and competitive and pesky. New coaching staff from last year,
Kyler Murray coming back off his ACL but again strong draft.
Seven new players in the top ninety, including Marvis Nearson Junior,
and then Seattle bringing up the rear, and just to recap,
(01:37:25):
the NFC South got the Atlanta Falcons winning it. I
think it's only going to take nine and eight to
win that division. I like Raheem Morris. I like the roster.
They have league's weakest schedule based on the math, and
they have again starting Week three. There's next six games.
They play five home games and face all their divisional
folls at home. That's the kind of stretch that we
(01:37:46):
could put you in the cat bird seat heading into November. Saints, eh,
they're under five hundred since Drew Brees left and retired.
There's no reason to believe they're going to be over
five hundred this year. That there's not a lot to like.
And I mentioned earlier that Alvin Kamara is disgruntled and
he may be the best player on the team. He
wants a contract situation. Tampa Bay, they've been to the
(01:38:08):
postseason since every season since twenty nineteen, but they were
eighteen and nineteen over the past two seasons. And look,
they've benefited in playing in a week NFC South. But
I think this is the year that Atlanta rises above.
And of course Carolina new head coach. You get Dave
Canalis who comes over from Tampa Bay. He is a
(01:38:30):
quarterback whisperer, and he's got lots of positive vibes. And
there's every reason to expect that they'll improve and that
Bryce Young will improve. And that's maybe not saying a
lot because they only won two games last year, So
aan do have a party if they double their win total. No,
and again last week I started out with the NFC East.
(01:38:53):
You heard me with Jason Hershorn. I like Philadelphia, although
Jason brought up a great point. They got their third
set of coordinators in three years. You got a new
offensive coordinator in Kellen Moore and a new defensive coredator
in vict Fangio. Fangio is a legend. I think Philly
wins the division. And I think you know they're not
going to win thirteen fourteen games, but ten and seven
(01:39:15):
is going to win that division. I I may pay
Hell for this. I may be going to Hell on
a scholarship for this. I think the Cowboys are going
eight to nine this year. Maybe in future shows we'll
talk about, you know, their schedule, which you can make
for very boring radio, but I think their schedule matters
(01:39:36):
and they open up against Cleveland, and that is I
think they're a one point favorite or one point underdog.
That's going to be a very difficult, very very difficult opening,
you know game, and it doesn't get any easier from there, right.
(01:39:57):
And the truth of the matter is, you know, we
talk about teams every year that didn't make the playoffs
to make the playoffs the following year. Well, we don't
spend a lot of time talking about our teams who
made the playoffs who aren't likely to make the playoffs
the following year. I think Dallas can fall into that category. Yeah,
(01:40:20):
they have talent. No one can deny that. You get
Cede Lamb in this situation with the contract, you got
uncertain futures by Mike McCarthy, who's a lame duck Dak Prescott.
It kind of skews the perception of a team that
won the NFC East last year. They haven't even played
it down this year. But something doesn't feel right and
there's no spending. The loss of their defensive coinator Dan Quinn,
(01:40:41):
they lost a bunch of free agents to you know,
they were less heralded players, but that have to do
with their death. I don't feel like Dallas This doesn't
feel like a formula to win the division this year.
I just feel there's turmoil and I think it's going
to catch up with them. Dallas might have missed the playoffs.
I think they're going eight to nine, all right, coming up.
(01:41:02):
You know, we've got robots in baseball in the future,
maybe umpire robots. We have instant replay. We have something
in tennis that works quite well. It's actually called the
Cyclops system, and what it does is it tells you
if a ball was in or out of bounds. And
the NFL is kind of enamored with this technology and
(01:41:24):
they've partnered with new technology and the idea is to
replace what is considered an archaic chain gang. You know
what the chain gang is. They march out onto the
field to let you know if it's the first down
based on the spot of football. But now the NFL
wants to try this new technology. And he debuted Friday
in the New York Giants Detroit Lions game of me
(01:41:45):
at my stadium. Let's just say this, he got off
to a rocky start. We're gonna chop it up, tell
you what happened. I'm gonna bring in the crew. When
is enough enough or am I wrong? You got to
get it right at any cost. First, let's go back
to our guy, Kevin Wire, the chef the latest.
Speaker 10 (01:42:01):
We've got to handle the ball better. You've got to
hold your football like you would hold your lover. Gently,
get firmly. You want to be both nursing and cleaning
up the same time. Oh yeah, ye, ski love to
the footballing be not with the football shop spanky.
Speaker 2 (01:42:31):
Oh sorry, children, Another BAFU performance, chef, nicely done.
Speaker 7 (01:42:37):
I figured that would be great advice to all the
NFL and college football players who are currently in training
camp right now as they're awaiting at the start of
the season. College of course getting started in three weeks
actually week zero, two weeks from now, believe it or not.
And then we have, of course the NFL coming up
the week after Labor Day. So I had to put
on that performance for all the players getting ready for
this season and so excited Bernie football is already here anyway,
(01:43:00):
the preseason, the first fall slate of games in the
preseason at debuting this weekend and Caleb Williams getting his
first game action in the NFL, and he looked pretty
impressive doing so. Four to seven for ninety five yards
that also included a couple of drops, one big one
by a DJ Moore. He also had a one to
one point eight passer rating, and the Bears do beat
(01:43:21):
the Bills thirty three to six. JJ McCarthy another impressive
debut as well, one hundred and eighty eight yards two touchdowns,
din't have an interception as well, but the Vikings do
beat the Raiders twenty four to twenty three. Malik Willis
looked pretty good at times last year and at this
start of the preseason five to seven, thirty eight yards.
Titans beat the forty nine ers seventeen to thirteen. In
(01:43:45):
the Olympics, It's another gold medal for the United States,
the fifth straight one they have won since the going
back to the two thousand and eight Redeemed team. It's
Steph Curry who is a big part of the win
for the United States eight to twelve from beyond the
three point arc four of them coming down this stretch
as they beat the host nation France ninety eight eighty seven.
Those same two teams will go for gold, same two
(01:44:06):
countries will go for gold. On the women's side of things,
USA women's basketball and France will tip off Sunday morning
at nine thirty Eastern time. Elsewhere in the Olympics, women's
Soucker strikes gold against Brazil, winning at one zil in
the American men and women track and field teams winning
the gold medal in the four x four hundred meter
(01:44:26):
relay of the Olympic medal count the United States overall
with one twenty two but thirty eight gold medals, trailing
China by one. They have thirty nine. France has sixteen
gold medals sixty two overall. Major League Baseball out West,
it's a tie at top of the AL West. Mariners
beat the Mets for nothing Logan Gilbert's seven scoreless innings
(01:44:47):
six strikeouts. Astros beat the Red Sox five to four,
yaront On Alvarez going deep twice, so seattlean Houston a
virtual tie for first place. The Dodgers hand Paul Skins
the second loss of the season in a four to
one victory. Padres outlast the Marlins nine to eight in
extra innings. The Dodgers' lead in the NL West currently
stands at two and a half games, Diamondbacks three and
(01:45:09):
a half back. In Los Angeles. In the NL West standings.
They're on fire right now. The Diamondbacks they're really charging up.
They beat the Phillies eleven to one, Braves of the
Rockies eleven to eight. In the American League East, this
has been a close race as well between the Yankees
and Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore on top by game over New York.
That's after the Yankees split a doubleheader with the Rangers today.
(01:45:31):
As for the Orioles, they beat the Rays seven to five.
Battle of the Windy City goes to the Cubs on Saturday.
They beat the White Socks three to one. The Royals
over the Cardinals in an all Missouri affair, eight to three,
Guardians over the Twins two to one. Brewers shut out,
the Reds won nothing. Nationals hold off the Angles in
extra innings five to four.
Speaker 2 (01:45:53):
Back to you, Bernie, all right, good hup, good good stuff, chef.
By the way, if you've watched tennis at all in
the last four decades, you know that there's an electronic
line judge that was developed by a computer inventor in
Great Britain. It was called Cyclops, and it really does
a great job. It basically to help determine whether it
(01:46:15):
serves in or out, it does it quickly, and in
the last decade or so, or maybe longer than that,
it's been upgraded to a system called Hawkeye, which Steve
Roders just pointed out on Twitter is right, and I
know Cyclops is not using any Grand Slam events, but
the concept is still there. Well, the NFL now wants
(01:46:35):
to try that concept when it comes to deciding and
determining whether a team has gotten a first down if
you gain the required yardage to get a first down,
all right, and so instead of trotting out a chain gang,
which some people think is archaic, and you let's you know,
this is where the world is now. You've got robot
(01:46:57):
empires calling balls and strikes in the minor league are
going to probably go to that in a couple of years.
And there's already technology in football and all those sports now, right,
So it's being tried in the preseason. It started Friday
night and it got off to a rocky start. The
Giants were playing the New York Giants playing the Lions.
(01:47:18):
Nate Subfield was in a quarterback for the Lions. You
threw a pass to Tom Kennedy, wide receiver. Third and five,
second quarter, the ball was close to the first down line,
so they decided to use the Hawkeye technology determined if
the Lions had actually reached the first down marker. Here's
the kicker. It took almost four minutes until the ball
was snapped for the next play. Phil Simms, the former quarterback,
(01:47:42):
was asked if, hey, are we really going to use
this technology if it takes that long. I get it, it
was brand new. It's just, you know, give it a chance.
But there's a couple of things to keep in mind here. Okay,
there's already plenty of delays during the game. This is
an entertainment medium. Is this going to add more delays?
I know their product has gone on in the preseason. They're
(01:48:02):
not going to roll it out for the regular season,
certainly not this year. And Friday Night told you why.
So it's new technology. They're going to be for flaws
to work out. I realized that everybody wants correct and
accurate measurements and the system can perhaps help with that.
But this is assuming also the officials get the spot
on the field correct, and that's another discussion for another day, right,
(01:48:24):
But there's something else too. In addition to the delay
in the game, which nobody likes. There's always that kind
of drama when you're watching the game and you got
a rooting interest and you drop the chain gang out
for potential game to satting measurement. You watch them stretch
the chain. That's part of I think the drama waiting
for the players and officials and you signal whether the
first dollar is there. Sports are entertainment and this is
(01:48:46):
kind of dramatic. It is sometimes technology. You might be
have the best intentions, intentions and yes you want to
get it right, but at what cost. I don't like it.
I want to bring in the crew. Let's get their thoughts. Breed,
Let's start with you. You would you rather just see the
old chain gang or how you feel about this Hawkeye
technology took four minutes?
Speaker 11 (01:49:07):
Yeah, I kind of think that it's gonna be either
it's gonna take like, you know, how ten thousand hours?
Speaker 12 (01:49:14):
Is that Malcolm Gladwell things excel?
Speaker 11 (01:49:16):
Yeah, So maybe in like this Hawkeye technology, it'll be
like ten thousand minutes and see if it's actually gonna
work out.
Speaker 4 (01:49:24):
I don't know.
Speaker 11 (01:49:25):
I agree with you. I think that there is like
that drama in entertainment. But you can get drama and
other avenues like with a coin toss, you know, going
into overtime, or a coach is challenge and those kinds
of things. I think we're just to kind of see
if something's gonna be a first down. I mean, if
it's at the goal line and you know it's less
than you know, a minute left like things like that,
(01:49:47):
that's kind of like that's intense, But yeah, I think
it's gonna they'll give it another they'll give it a chance.
And this is like preseason, so this is the opportunity
to kind of see if it's gonna work out. And
I think they'll be smart and figure out if it's
gonna work out or not. And if it's going to
take like four minutes every single time, then there's just
no point. You're just you're kind of just, I don't
want to say, kind of like not ruining the product,
(01:50:08):
not ruining the product, but just kind of you know,
diluting it a little bit.
Speaker 2 (01:50:13):
Yeah, it definitely will dilute it my opinion, And even
if they reduced it in half, still takes a couple
of minutes because apparently in order to make this happen,
it requires this animated creation which the computer does, and
it recreates the length and distance in the chain and
the football based on the computer technology that's observing it
(01:50:34):
and photoing it. So that's going to take time. And
when you add on top of that they already review
every scoring play, turnovers. Then there are coaches challenges. I
hate it when they're standing around. I mean, Phil Simms
really got so this is going to add to that,
add to already multiple delays. Now to breeze point. And
(01:50:56):
by the way, Malcolm Gladwell's written several good books Outliers
to one thousand nine. Look, the key is maybe they
can work out the gags, but even if they do,
it doesn't change my basic premise that it's going to
further delay the game at what cost? And what if
the ref don't spot the ball right in the first place?
Chef your thoughts.
Speaker 7 (01:51:14):
I'm in favor of using all the technology available to
make the calls and what happens on the field as
accurate as possible. It's got to be better than using
an index card to determine if every that.
Speaker 4 (01:51:26):
Yeah, which coach did that?
Speaker 2 (01:51:28):
I can't it was Mike Tomlin, I think was it?
Speaker 4 (01:51:30):
Mike Tomlin?
Speaker 2 (01:51:30):
You got to be wrong. We talked about a Friday
night at my midnight hour. Seventy percent of the fans
want to keep it, the people that call it my show,
because he said, look, we got to get this right. Okay,
if it takes a little longer, takes it the longer budget.
We've got to get these things right, go ahead, Jeff.
Speaker 7 (01:51:43):
Yeah, Accuracy to me is paramount. Now, I do agree
that letting it drag on two, three, four minutes at
a time, especially when you multiply it by how many
reviews you have a game, you know, five to six
seventy at least, so that really does I agree with
Breon that it really does dilute the product and drag
things along. My opinion has always been that give it
one minute if it's not conclusive, after then the call
(01:52:04):
in the field stands. And I think that there should
be more time to develop this technology before we fully
implement it. So I do like that they're kind of
testing it out first in the preseason. The games don't matter,
so they can kind of see exactly how it works
and then refine it going forward. I do think there's
a place for it. I don't know if the technology
is quite there yet. And what really complicates things in
(01:52:24):
football compared to a sport like say tennis, is it's
about where the player hits the ground as well as
where the ball is. It's not just where the ball is,
So there's a lot more involved in determining what the
right call is. And I'm not sure if the technology
is there yet, but something's got to be better than
an index card. We're in the year twenty twenty four,
so I imagine we got to have the technology somewhere
(01:52:45):
to make this better, to streamline the calls, to make
things more accurate, because with all the money that's involved,
especially gambling money, and which calls are way more consequential,
I think that they should be. Yeah, embracing technology as.
Speaker 2 (01:52:57):
Much as we can. We do have the technology, we
do have the feet that your functionality. It comes down
to execution. Mark, you're part of our discussion Friday night.
What are your thoughts on that final word?
Speaker 1 (01:53:06):
Is Mark Ramsey with us so well?
Speaker 13 (01:53:08):
Like I said before, like some of the callers the
other night, I guess the whole thing comes down to
about time and being accurate. If the spot isn't good
in the first part, just the beginning of the spot.
Whatever technology you have is gonna be flawed because just
bringing out the chains work for how many years? And
(01:53:31):
now because of technology, somebody wants that. Somebody has a
new idea to use something else. I get it that
technology comes along and people want to get something new,
but just leave it the same way, because if it's
gonna take too much time, it's gonna be pointless to
drag out the drag out the game because people are
(01:53:53):
already having quick attention spans when it comes to sports,
So why drag it out if they don't want to
be there in the first place?
Speaker 2 (01:54:03):
Well said, And look, the bottom line is, like Kevin said,
there could be a scrumb of bodies around the ball,
so we might have clear visibility coming up fun with numbers.
I saw this regarding Russell Wilson and it slayed me.
And oh, by the way, the New York Jets, you're
gonna see him on TV a lot this year. Let's
hope Aaron Rodgers is part of it. There's kind of
a damning statistic that might have me a little worried.
(01:54:25):
I'm Bernie Fraddle. We're comingy Lyning from Las Vegas. Fox
Sports Radio Tiret dot com studios. Keep it locked you
listen to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (01:54:32):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to
listen live.
Speaker 2 (01:54:44):
I were back on the Bernie Frattle Show Fox Sports Radio,
coming to live from the Tiret dot com studios here
in Las Vegas. Coming up top of the hour ten
minutes the Dance Sensation sweep of the Nation. What kind
of brand new fool you? Followed by what my I name?
You know? Only nine quarterbacks started all seventeen games last season.
(01:55:05):
Aaron Rodgers obviously was not one of them. Nonetheless, turn
on your TV at any point this season, there's a
good chance you're gonna see the Jets on TV. Why
and clearly this is because of Aaron Rodgers. The Jets
have been awarded six primetime games this season, all over
(01:55:28):
the first eleven weeks. That's the first time in NFL
history that a team has been given that many night
games in the first eleven weeks. By the way, the
Jets also have a Week five game in London, which
means to beginning, seven standalone games in the first eleven
weeks and then before Thanksgiving. Pretty amazing when you consider
this is a team that hasn't had a winning season
(01:55:52):
since Uptown Funk was the number one song of the
year on Billboard Hot one hundred. Yeah, that's what we
do here on the Bernie Fridle Show. I hate when
I go third person like that. But look, hopefully rogers
better days are ahead and he stays healthy. Okay, And
there's also some other concern too, because it's not just
(01:56:15):
what happened last year. Let's go back to twenty twenty two,
and I'm not bashing Rogers, but facts as facts. Back
in twenty twenty two, Aaron Rodgers failed to throw for
three hundred yards in any game the entire season. He
also had twelve interceptions in that same season. That was
the most in his first year. Or check that that
was the most since his first year as a rookie
(01:56:37):
back in twenty oh eight. Here's what's also remarkable about this.
Three teams got six primetime games, the Niners, Cowboys, and Jets,
but the Niners won fourteen last year, the Cowboys won twelve,
the Jets only won seven. Still, I'm here for it.
I hope Rodgers stays healthy all year. But again, only
nine quarterbacks started all seventeen games last season. Yo, if
(01:57:01):
we can make a deal, Rogers starts fifteen. Take it.
You can do that. If you do that, I think
jeff might be a playoff team, especially with that defense.
Speaking of quarterbacks, and I'm tired of hearing about the
Justin Fields Russell Wilson competition in Pittsburgh. They're not gonna
start Justin Field's week one. They're gonna start Russell Wilson.
(01:57:21):
I don't care whether you like him or hate him.
He threw twenty six touchdown passes, he had interceptions. It
wasn't a fit with Sean Peyton. I know we were
out as welcome in Seattle. I think he's got a
little bit gash left in the tank. Here's why I
bring up Russell Wilson's name. I saw this and it
slayed me. Okay, as you know, Russell Wilson plays for Pittsburgh. Now,
(01:57:42):
Russell Wilson played for Denver last year. And Russell Wilson,
I mean, you know, Pittsburgh signed for a back of
football's basically, here's how much they did sign it for
Hopefully Russell Wilson will be starting on the road week
two in Denver when he makes your return to his
team from last year. Why, it'll be the first time
(01:58:04):
in history a quarterback or any player for that matter,
will be playing against a former team. Will that former
team is paying eighty seven percent of his salary? You
heard that right. Russell Wilson goes to Denver week two
as a starter. In that game, his opponent his former teammate,
the Denver Broncos. His former team will be paying eighty
(01:58:25):
seven percent of Russell wilson salary. Mark your calendar. The
Steelers visit Denver week two coming up? What kind of
brand new fool of you? What my name? Keep it locked?
It's the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:58:38):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:58:42):
That's right, you heard the man. Bernie Fraddles show keeps
scrolling right along. My name is Bernie Fraddle. We are
company live from the tierrat dot com studios here in
Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio tierrac dot Com. We'll help
you get there. An unmatched selection fans, free shipping for
your Ownazter protection, and over ten thousand recommend an installers
tirec dot com the way tire buying should be. Well,
(01:59:04):
we've come to that juncture in the show, that juncture
in the week. You know what, you love it. You
can't live without it, you see, we as joll Giberra
once said, you can observe a lot by watching, and
that's what we do. Because around this great land of ours,
from seed to Oily Sea, and even around the planet. Well,
let's face it, people do things. They engage in behaviors
that are weird, nod and questionable, and sometimes they are innocuous,
(01:59:27):
but other times they're more serious. Many times they can
run a follow the law and even land you in jail.
But any way you slice it, any way you describe it,
any way you characterize it, all these behaviors they always
leaving us scratching our head and asking ourselves, what kind
of brand new fool are you?
Speaker 6 (01:59:51):
So?
Speaker 4 (01:59:52):
What kind of brand new fool are you?
Speaker 2 (01:59:54):
All right? So this happens once in a blue moon,
I have what I would call an encore segment. I
actually had someone requests this. A couple of people. We
did this probably what six months ago. You may have
heard it, but it's worth here and again because this
one is whack. We take you to Baxter County, Arkansas.
(02:00:16):
We introduce you to an affable gentleman by the name
of Theodore Morgavin. Well see, around twelve forty five am
in Baxter County, Arkansas, a deputy noticed a car parked
near a commercial storage facility. But the deputy knew something
(02:00:36):
didn't look right, and as he approached the car, he
saw the car was rocking back and forth. He looked
inside and mister Morgavan was in the car in the
prone position wait for it, getting busy with a stuffed animal. Wow. Well,
(02:00:59):
the deputy decided to arrest mister Morgarvan and searches carm
And then it gets even weirder, all right, they found
a purse that had drug paraphernalia in it, and well,
it had three grams of myth. Not only that, there
(02:01:21):
were other items in there. And mister Morgavan was eventually
charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance,
public sexual indecency, possession of drug paraphernalia, and bringing drug
paraphernalia into a governed government facility. Then he went to
jail and investigators found another purse with three more grams
(02:01:45):
of myth. I don't know, man, I don't know. These
things get weirder by the day. This one was an
encore the good folks in Baxter County, Arkansas. We ask you,
mister morgavan, what kind of brand new foller you?
Speaker 1 (02:02:02):
All right?
Speaker 2 (02:02:02):
Brief? You are an up and coming star at this game.
What have you got for us tonight?
Speaker 12 (02:02:07):
Alrighty?
Speaker 11 (02:02:08):
So this takes place in Colorado Springs, and they actually
didn't give a name for the man, so I don't
know if that's even like a kind.
Speaker 12 (02:02:17):
Of a heads up of this is a little odd.
Speaker 11 (02:02:20):
I'm gonna call him John Doe just because I can't
even like think of a cool name. He doesn't deserve it, alrighty.
So this guy was, you know, searching online and I
guess needed a vehicle. So he saw there was an
SUV listed on Craigslist. So when he sent the message,
(02:02:40):
he offered to trade illegal homegrown you know, homegrown in
the basement or the you know, the what's that where
the cars go the garage?
Speaker 12 (02:02:52):
Homegrown marijuana?
Speaker 11 (02:02:54):
Oh no, And so that was his like offer, like,
I'm not gonna give you fifteen hundred dollars. I'm not
going to give you three thousand dollars. I'm going to
offer homegrown marijuana. That vehicle actually happened to be owned
by a sheriff. Stol Teller County Sheriff Jason Mike sell
(02:03:14):
was the one that received the text from thirty the
thirty nine year old John Doe offering you know, X
amount of four pounds of homegrown marijuana.
Speaker 12 (02:03:25):
And so the man sent actual.
Speaker 11 (02:03:28):
Photos of the product, and so Jason Mike Assel went
along with it and was like, okay, then come over
and we'll schedule this meetup and you can come look
at the suv. Mike Cell called his buddies at the
police station, and sure enough, when John Doe arrived for
the swap, he was immediately arrested. Authorities say they found
(02:03:52):
about four pounds of illegal homegrown marijuana in the car,
and he also had a lady friend with him, so
I don't know if she maybe she was like the
one that.
Speaker 12 (02:04:06):
Was an accomplice, but she.
Speaker 11 (02:04:07):
Was also arrested. They were charged with possession with intent
to sell. So and then Jason Migassella said that he
will he will not relist the suv on Craigslist, especially
if he doesn't know what other kind of offers he's
going to get for the specific type of SUV. So,
John Doe in Colorado Springs, what kind of brand new
(02:04:28):
pool are you?
Speaker 2 (02:04:30):
Outstanding effort? That was a good one. That was a
good one. Perhaps we in this particular case, asked John Doe,
what kind of dope are you?
Speaker 1 (02:04:39):
Did there?
Speaker 12 (02:04:40):
You out of the p and the dough for for.
Speaker 2 (02:04:42):
Uh, yeah, you're gonna sell four prounds of dope. I've
guessed in that place was stocked with a lot of
Doritos and stuff too, So that's can lead you anyway,
good one, Brie. Actually a lot of moving parts, and
we don't often get the Colorado Springs, so you brought
us into a new geographic propinquity. That work, all right, chef,
you're up next.
Speaker 7 (02:05:02):
Now, how can you turn down a deal like that?
Brings a whole new meaning to the word rocky mountain highs?
Speaker 2 (02:05:07):
Oh nicely, Now you're showing off. Now you're just showing off.
Speaker 1 (02:05:12):
All right, We go to I guess.
Speaker 2 (02:05:14):
You would call that a Kevin Wyer joint. Oh oh,
keep him coming, all righteous stuff.
Speaker 7 (02:05:21):
We're here all night, We're here all night. We go
to Pittsburgh, the Steel City. Now we've heard many stories
of guys trying to break out of jail. Well, this
unidentified man is accused of trying to break into the
Alleghany County Jail Saturday morning. The Alleghany County Police Department
(02:05:41):
saying in a news release that law enforcement notified of
an attempted break into the visitor's lobby of the jail
around seven am this morning, and officers with the Pittsburgh
Bureau of Police responded to the scene and detained a
man with minor injuries because detectives said that the man
caused extensive damage to the door while trying to break in,
so the door did not get it or did not
(02:06:02):
break open, and he ended up hurting himself. So the
man taken to a local hospital for treatment. Again not identified,
but the Allegheny County Police Detective's currently filing charges on
him for burglary related charges and will be transporting him
to the jail for arrangments. So one identified man in Pittsburgh,
What kind of brand new fool are you.
Speaker 2 (02:06:22):
Trying to break into jail? Did he have a motive or.
Speaker 7 (02:06:27):
It doesn't say and I cannot imagine what motive could be.
I mean, unless he was delusional enough to think he
could break someone out by breaking in. Is this prison
break all over again? I'm not sure, but.
Speaker 2 (02:06:38):
That's why we do this. What kind of brand new
fool you want to sell a car? Yeah? Four pounds
of this is good stuff, guys, good research, nicely done.
Another rousing edition of what kind of brand new fool
of you is in the books, which now allows us
to segue into our second favorite bit, which we lovedly
refer to as what my name? All right? So Steph
(02:07:03):
went bananas Thursday? Had nine three pointers in a game.
But I actually hold the record US Men's Olympic basketball
for having ten three pointers in one game? Bree, what
my name?
Speaker 12 (02:07:17):
Yikes? Larry Bird?
Speaker 2 (02:07:21):
That's not a bad guess. I love the name, not
Larry Bird. I hold the record men's Olympic basketball for
getting ten three pointers in a single game, Mark Ramsey,
what my name?
Speaker 4 (02:07:32):
John Sally?
Speaker 2 (02:07:36):
Former Detroit Piston John Sally doesn't work a lot of
work on radio. Now I hold the record for men's
US Men's Department of Redundancy Department Olympic basketball had ten
three pointers in one game. Chef Kevin Wire, what my name?
Speaker 4 (02:07:51):
I guess Kobe, not Kobe.
Speaker 2 (02:07:54):
Not all good guesses, though, it's actually Carmelo Anthony. Carmelo
Anthony had ten three pointers in twenty twelve in London
against Nigeria. All right. In the history of college football,
college football is right on the corner now, as you said, chef.
In the history of college football, as a quarterback, I
(02:08:17):
started more games than anybody in history. Bree, what my name?

Speaker 4 (02:08:45):
Joe Montana, Not Joe Montana.
Speaker 2 (02:08:49):
Ironically he didn't start to like a senior year in
Notre Dame. All right. In the history of college football,
I've started more games at quarterback than anybody else. Kevin
Wired the chef.
Speaker 4 (02:08:57):
I'm gonna guest Stetson Bennett.
Speaker 2 (02:09:00):

But you can get on the fields to the junior
it's bow knicks, guys.
Speaker 4 (02:09:05):

Speaker 2 (02:09:06):
Remember he started all those games at Auburn and then
then at Oregon. No problema. Okay. Lebron recently had a
triple double in the Olympics versus Serbia. Before that, I
was the last Olympian to have a triple double, Brie,
(02:09:26):
what my name.
Speaker 4 (02:09:31):
Jokic?
Speaker 2 (02:09:33):
Not Jokic, but you're kind of not far off. By
the way, a few music fans Suzanne Vega once had
a song by this guy's first name. I bet for
you would get it. Then, Uh, Lebron had a triple
double versus Serbia Thursday. But I was the last Olympian
to have a triple double.
Speaker 4 (02:09:51):
Mark Ramsey, what my name, Luca?
Speaker 2 (02:09:56):
It is Luka Doncic? Did that clue help you? Vega?
Speaker 4 (02:10:00):
Definitely all right?
Speaker 8 (02:10:02):
Three?
Speaker 2 (02:10:02):
You would have got it too, would you? Yeah, just
a little bit, all right? Maybe I need to do
more of that, all right. I am veering off course
on this one. You know, there's there's there's no more
Simon Kyle, There's nor more There's no more William Hung.
American Idle is not the same. By the way, Katy
Perry is now leaving American Idol. I will be replacing
(02:10:25):
Katie Katy Perry on American Idol on the panel. Bree,
what my name?
Speaker 12 (02:10:30):
Oh, Kerrie Underwe look at that.
Speaker 2 (02:10:32):
There you go, all right, guys are cooking now. In
the history of the National Football League, I became the
first quarterback, the first left handed quarterback to make it
to the Hall of Fame. Mark Ramsey, what my.
Speaker 4 (02:10:50):
Name was his nickname? Snake?
Speaker 2 (02:10:54):
Oh you're thinking of Kenny Stabler. No, not Kenny stable On.
The first NFL quarterback, tanned quarterback to make it to
the Hall of Fame. Kevin wire Chef.
Speaker 4 (02:11:04):
What my name wasn't Johnny Unit just left handed?
Speaker 2 (02:11:06):
He would not to the best of my knowledge.
Speaker 4 (02:11:08):
Now, for some reason I thought that might have been
a thing.
Speaker 2 (02:11:12):
But no, not to the best of my knowledge. No,
I don't know. No he's he wasn't. I'm the first
NFL quarterback, first left handed quarterback in the NFL to
make it to the Hall of Fame. Bring what my
name is?
Speaker 12 (02:11:25):

Speaker 8 (02:11:25):
Young?
Speaker 2 (02:11:26):
Yeah? Here you go. Here comes breaking out of the way.
All right. You know they talk about guys not playing
in the preseason. Well, as a former quarterback, I once

(02:11:48):
Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 4 (02:11:52):

Speaker 2 (02:11:55):
Another great name. I once through fifty eight passes in
an NFL pre season game, Chef Kevin Wire, what my name?
Speaker 4 (02:12:02):
Fifty eight passes in a preseason.
Speaker 2 (02:12:04):
In a freaking preseason game.
Speaker 7 (02:12:06):
I'm trying to think who's played in a lot of them.
Matt Flynn gets a lot of preseason action.
Speaker 2 (02:12:15):
That's true. That's true. God, there's an old story about
Matt Flynn when he lit it up against Detroit and
got that contract and then goes to Seattlega's beat up
our Russell Wilson. But story for a different day. All right,
I went through fifty eight passes in a preseason games. Quarterback,
bre what my name?
Speaker 11 (02:12:32):
I mean?
Speaker 12 (02:12:32):
I know you were attacking my Saints earlier. I'm gonna
go Chase Daniel. I don't know why the super random,
but I don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:12:41):
Not Chase Dan. But I actually saw Chase Daniel play
in high school in Texas. Oh yeah, the South Lake
Carol played Denton Ryan. He was the actually the backup
quarterback to Greg McElroy. Can you mention having both of
those guys in the same column? Steam? All right, By
the way, I apologize if I was making fun of
your I'm just kidding. Uh, all right, I want to
(02:13:07):
do fifty eight passes in a preseason game. Chef, have
we gone to you yet? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (02:13:13):
I guess Matt Flynn.
Speaker 2 (02:13:14):
And Mark Ramsey, you guessed, Markland. Okay, good night, folks,
somebody take over. It's actually Roger styleback, Roger styleback.
Speaker 7 (02:13:26):
I guess they all played what six preseason games, and
they played like every down of them back then.
Speaker 2 (02:13:30):
Well that they did back then. They Yeah, there were
none of this stuff was going on back then, and
you know, so, yes, I don't remember it. But anyway,
all right, I have won four gold medals in Olympic basketball.
That's more than anybody in Olympic basketball history. Bree, what
my name, Katie bar.
Speaker 12 (02:13:57):
Phenixens, Kevin Durant.
Speaker 2 (02:13:59):
There you go. All right, So I talked about Carmelo Anthony.
He holds the record for ten to three pointers in
a single game in the Olympics. Well, I hold the
record for the second most three pointers in the Olympic
game with nine, Mark Ramsey, with my name.
Speaker 4 (02:14:18):
Lebron James, not Lebron James.
Speaker 2 (02:14:21):
I hold the record for the second most three pointers
in an Olympic men's US basketball game with nine.
Speaker 4 (02:14:27):
Chef, what my name, Steph Curry.
Speaker 2 (02:14:29):
It is fact. Steph Curry just dead a Thursday. All right,
one more, one more team. I'm the You know, this year,
two Heisman Trophy winners were drafted back to back, right,
you had Caleb Williams who won the Heisman, and and
(02:14:50):
now I'm having a brain cramp. Thank you, thank you
for bailing me out. Three Jayden Daniels out of LSU.
All right. Interestingly enough, in the history of the NFL,
there's only been one Heisman Trophy winning quarterback that went
on to make it to the Hall of Fame in
the National Football League bre What my name?
Speaker 12 (02:15:11):
Yikes?
Speaker 4 (02:15:14):
Warren Moon?
Speaker 2 (02:15:15):
Oh, I love Warren Moon came out of Washington. I
don't believe he won the Heisman though, but he's in
the Hall of Fame, that's for sure. Got that part,
all right. I'm the only Heisman winning Trophy quarterback quarterback
in college to go to the NFL and make it
to the Hall of Fame. Mark Ramsey, what my name.
Speaker 4 (02:15:36):
Is it? Elway?
Speaker 2 (02:15:38):
Not John Elway, and John Elway did not win the Heisman.
I am the only Heisman quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy.
Department of redundancy, department to go on to the NFL
and make it to the Hall of Fame as a
quarterback chef Kevin Wire, what my name.
Speaker 7 (02:15:56):
Is talking about redundancy, We're giving you the same answers
a couple of questions.
Speaker 4 (02:16:00):
Ago, Roger Stobach, it is, in.
Speaker 2 (02:16:01):
Fact, Roger Stobach curveball there, I am. I want to
do that every once in a while.
Speaker 7 (02:16:09):
Yeah, that last question made me remember him, Yes, winning
the Heisman Trophy that Navy and then going I think
it was am.
Speaker 2 (02:16:17):
I ripped this guy a lot, but I'll tell you what.
I'm gonna get him some far if we're gonna do
one more. The last time Mississippi State was number one
in the nation, I was just starting quarterback bre what
my name?
Speaker 12 (02:16:29):
Oh gosh, Mississippi State.
Speaker 2 (02:16:31):
I was ripping him earlier in the show. He does
not play for the Saints, he does not play for
the Phoenix Suns.
Speaker 11 (02:16:42):
Oh my god.
Speaker 2 (02:16:43):
On American Idol's.
Speaker 11 (02:16:46):
Oh you're riffing him earlier, I am. I'm I'm brain
farting to the max.
Speaker 2 (02:16:53):
I'm gonna it's all good. You've already got three three
answers tonight. So the last time Mississippi State was number
one of the nation. I was a starting quarterback, Mark Ramsey.
What my name.
Speaker 4 (02:17:08):
I don't know?
Speaker 2 (02:17:10):
Okay, last time Mississippi State was number on the nation,
I was the starting quarterback. The chef kevil Wire. What
my name is Manning? It is not Eli Manning. Believe
it or not, Dak Prescottscott. Great job by everybody. Great
(02:17:30):
job on brand New Fool, Great job on what my name? Mark?
Give him an applause? Man, Let's let's do it. Let's
do it. I mean a little little something some for
the effort, A little something something. I really appreciate the effort.

All right back in the Bernie Fratle Show Foxsports Radio.
You know what's college football season? When the USA Today
officially reveals their pre season college football rankings, you can
almost hear the drum beat in the background and Paul
Finbaum with that look on his face like it just
smelled a bad fart look. It's football season, man, A
(02:19:18):
new college football season is upon us, and after some
significant changes, you's gonna take some getting used to. You know,
you had Michigan and Washington compete for a national title.
Now both programs will have brand new head coaches. In
twenty twenty four, think about all the schools that are
in different conferences. The Texas Longhorns in Oklahoma, they're now
(02:19:41):
in the SEC. They're no longer in the Big Twelve. Meanwhile,
the Big Twelve alled Colorado and Deon Sanders. The Big
Twelve also added Utah. So the last fourteen years, Utah
has gone from the Mountain West to the Pac Twelve.
To the Big twelve Arnie Spaniards, Arizona Wildcats also in
the Big twelve Arizona State, eight Sun Devils. The ACC
(02:20:01):
now has SMU cal Stanford Big ten got the Oregon Ducks,
Watchington Husky's USC Trojans, UCLA Bruins, thro Who are the
top five teams Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas and Bama
give it up to Lane Kiff and then Ole Miss
checking in at number six. Notre Dame. I don't know
if they're that high. Seven Michigan, I don't know if
(02:20:23):
they deserve to be eighth, Penn State ninth, Florida State tenth.
Interesting all the way down. None of them really surprised
me on this list. Maybe I don't know if USC
deserves to be twenty third, but it's not gonna matter anyway.
It will all be turned upside down by the time
you get to December. Although Georgia looks awfully good, Georgia
and o'hopse State look awfully good, but they're gonna have
(02:20:45):
tough schedules, all right. Coming up, Chris profests World of Soccer.
But first we go back to our guy, Kevin Wyre,
the chef with the.
Speaker 7 (02:20:54):
Latest yeah in soccer at the Olympics, it is the
United States women's striking gold for the fifth time as
they win the gold medal, beating Brazil in the Olympic
Final one nothing a couple of other American teams winning
the gold medal, the US men's basketball team, largely thanks
to Steph Curry going eight to twelve from beyond the
ark and four big ones coming down the stretch in
(02:21:15):
the final minute as he helps the US beat France
ninety eight to eighty seven, the fifth straight gold medal
one by the Americans. If you go back to the
redeem team in two thousand and eight, France in the
USA in the women's side get a face off for
the gold medal. Nine to thirty am Eastern Time is
the scheduled tip off. And in track and field, the
American men and women win gold in the four by
(02:21:37):
four hundred meter relay of the US now trailing China
by just one in the gold medal count thirty eight
for the United States thirty nine for China. France has
sixteen gold sixty two medals, trailing the US overall, who
has one hundred and twenty two. Major League Baseball couple
of tight races. The American League East and West both
really competitive. The Astros and Mariner are still a virtual
(02:21:59):
time top of the AL West. That's after the Mariners
shut out the Mets four nothing, Logan Gilbert seven scoreless,
sending six strikeouts to the Astros get by the Red
Sox five to four behind two home runs from Jordon Alvarez.
In the American League East, it's also a one game separation,
the Yankees trailing Baltimore by one game out in the East.
(02:22:20):
That's after the Yankee split a double header with the Rangers,
while the Baltimore Orioles getting the win on Saturday, they
beat the Rays seven to five. Elsewhere in Major League Baseball,
the Padres hold off the Marlins nine to eighth. The
Diamondbacks with a big win against the Phillies, beating the
best team in baseball eleven to one.
Speaker 4 (02:22:40):
The Dodgers hold off the.
Speaker 7 (02:22:41):
Pirates four to one, giving Paul Skens his second loss
of the season, and it's tightening up in the National
League West. The Diamondbacks have won eight of their last
ten games. The Padres have won nine of the last
ten games well. LA They're five and five over the
last ten and the Dodgers up by two and a
half on San Diego, three and a half all on Arizona.
(02:23:01):
In the NFL, Caleb Williams making his debut and looked
pretty impressive so far, as he went four to seven
for ninety five yards, included a couple of drops as well.
His passer rating was one to one point eight. The
Bears roll over the Bills thirty three to six. JJ
McCarthy at one hundred and eight yards and a couple
of touchdown tosses. He also threw a pick in his
preseason debut as the Vikings hold off the Raiders twenty
(02:23:23):
four to twenty three. Malik Willis he got a chance
to get some action in today the Titans beat the
forty nine or seventeen to thirteen as Willis went five
to seven four thirty eight yards.
Speaker 2 (02:23:35):
Back to you, Bernie, all right, Jeff, good stuff tonight, buddy.
Well at this time every week we have a special
feature and now well will cups kind of in the books,
and Olympics are in the books, so that it doesn't
mean there isn't news. They call it football overseas, but
here in America, well we call it.
Speaker 14 (02:23:55):
Chris Perfetts World of Soccer, the greatest goals, the thrilling finishes,
the international drama.
Speaker 4 (02:24:11):
I am at the end of the level.
Speaker 3 (02:24:14):
It's all here in this report from the World of Soccer.
Speaker 15 (02:24:18):
What a long summer it has been, Bernie. For the
world of soccer. International play is finally with this this
weekend here at the Olympics coming down to a close.
Spain under twenty three has won the gold for men's spending,
their dominance here in this international year between here and
the euro Championship, and if the next two years prove anything,
(02:24:40):
then they will be prohibitive favorites going into the twenty
twenty six World Cup, especially with Lamina mal some very
young fine players and a young under twenty three squad
which will form backbone as they grow older and older.
It also means that we are closing in finally to
starting to deal a little bit more on the club
side of things. And I want to frame this by
(02:25:01):
we had a bit of a conversation last week about
FIFA and overcrowding the calendars, and I want to have
another conversation this week. Coming from the words of Zlatan
Ibrakimovich about MLS major leagues so the domestic league here
in the United States. Yes, we haven't talked about MLS
a ton because of we just haven't had time. In
the world of soccer, certainly with euro Championship, Copa America
(02:25:24):
and then even the Olympics, it's just been completely outshaded
and that's kind of rough if you'r MLS. Even with
Leonel Messi, the league stelf finds self in frustrating terms
of growth, finds self cast more in the foil against
grassroots USL clubs around the country and quite honestly just
demands still to see if they're gambit on this messy project,
(02:25:46):
it will pay off to higher popularity. But Latin took
a bit of a different attact when it came to
talking about MLS now. Speaking with the ESPN program First Takes,
Latin had said that when it comes to the game,
he thinks that it's getting better. The quality of the game,
the individuals is growing and getting better and better in
the country. He points to the twenty twenty six World
(02:26:08):
Cup that is coming for the United States and will
be very important to MLS, especially since this is a
league that can really trace its modern foundations back to
the last time the United States hosted a World Cup
in the nineties, but he says it also quote has
too many rules to make it grow faster. Speaking about
the league, and indeed, there are a lot of rules
(02:26:30):
that seem to exhibit growth in Major League Soccer, and
the biggest one comes in the term of salary cap.
Bernie and I think that might be a shock to
American sports fans. We're used to this outside of baseball,
but we really need to talk about the salary cap
in frank terms. I think in the minds of fans
out there in the United States, the salary cap exists
(02:26:51):
to promote parody. It's to make sure that one side
doesn't get bigger than the other. And that's taking off
of the model that the NFL has been able to
find too great success, where thirty two of its teams
are all going to be usually in the same realm
of relevancy in any given year. However, really what we're
talking about here when we're talking about growth, especially for
(02:27:11):
a growing league like Major League Soccer, is that the
salary cap in a sport also serves a second, and
I would argue more powerful purpose in that it keeps
owners from outspending each other. Yes, it exists because nobody
wants another George Steinbrenner making the rest of them look bad,
because that is what a salary cap is is. It
(02:27:33):
is a cartel limit on owners saying we don't want you,
guys to spend more than X.
Speaker 4 (02:27:40):
Why do we not want you to spend more than X?
Speaker 15 (02:27:42):
It might just be for it might be for competition,
but more than anything, it also makes sure that you
can't then accuse other owners of not spending well, because
that was always the knockback. You'd always hear about George
Steinbrenner in baseball outspending the other owners and that was unfair,
that wasn't fair to the small market guys, And always
the retort I heard back then Bernie was well, then
just go spend more money, spend money like him, and
(02:28:05):
then there'd be a lot of cries a poorhouse, even
though in the modern age of baseball there's no reason
for any owner to try to cry at poorhouse. And
something kind of like that exists in soccer that has
never really known a salary cap. If you go over
to Europe, the rich are big because they are rich
and powerful, and the small guys they just struggle to
(02:28:26):
stay afloat, and that might seem unfair to the untrained eye,
but at the same time it also ferrets out people
who come into the ecosystem and just won't spend to compete.
Speaker 9 (02:28:36):
Right.
Speaker 15 (02:28:36):
You always hear about guys who come in at like
the second or third tier of English soccer, buy up
a club and then start to cut costs. They don't
want to spend too much on player role and the
fan base usually ends up revolting. Why because they understand
that to compete with everyone else, you have to spend money.
You can't treat it like a trust fund. You can't
treat your sports club as a retirement in a vehicle.
(02:29:00):
You to passively make money. That's always been the problems
that Manchester United fans bring up the Glazer family. You're
not there because it is an investment and you want
to see a profit. You should be spending money to
compete at every level. And ultimately that's when people, especially
those abroad, start talking about the salary cap being a
weird problem of MLS. It is right, that is what
(02:29:21):
they're talking about, but more practically, it also limits you
from being unable to.
Speaker 4 (02:29:26):
Compete with other actors.
Speaker 15 (02:29:29):
Out there to get talents like say, slots on Abrahimovic.
There are several player slots that are exempt from the
salary cap, but you're still limited on what you can
pay out for those players to bring them stateside. And
that means practically, if you are an MLS contending with
say the Premier League or La Liga. Ladiga has been
(02:29:49):
having a very fun transfer season. By the way, you're
missing out on too many big players, top talents who
are going to go to more places where they won't
have limits on what they can spend.
Speaker 4 (02:30:00):
You've encouraged the sort of it's.
Speaker 15 (02:30:01):
Okay to not spend this money to compete with the
big guys out there. And that can even be traced
back to how MLS was able to bring in Leonel Messi,
where they had to help enter Miami spend the money
to afford a Lionel Messi. And here's the grim part
about competing. If you're MLS, your entire window for this
summer is gone. Premier League, Laaliga, all the rest of
(02:30:23):
Europe are coming back next week. That's right, August fifteenth, Thursday.
We're already getting domestic season kickoff in La Liga in
Spain Friday, will be the Premier League and Saturday will
be a full slate of Syria. It's already coming back
so so quickly. That's just one of the things I've
had on MLS, Bernie. But we should talk a little
bit before we get out of here about the latest
(02:30:44):
US men's team rumor.
Speaker 4 (02:30:46):
They still have yet to hire a coach.
Speaker 15 (02:30:47):
However, several newspapers out there, the Athletic with New York
Times sources reporting to them that Mauricio post Chattino is
one of the top names for the job right now
in the might be pursuing him. Poschatino has a bit
of an interesting profile right now. He was kind of
the rising star bringing Southampton the Premier League up to
(02:31:09):
prominence before he then get hired away where he spent
five seasons with Tottenham Hotspur, going to about Tottenham Hotspur levels,
never really going too far, but I don't think a
lot of that was completely on him, and then getting
bounce between Paris, Saint Germaine and Chelsea, both with outsized expectations.
It would be very interesting to see him come to
the United States. I think this is a man who
(02:31:30):
has a lot of European experience. It would fit very well.
He is a coach who favors a very high press
attacking style of soccer, and that is something that has
fit this profile of American soccer. Who wants to press,
who wants to have possession, and who wants to get
goal scoring opportunities. That he also raised a lot of
(02:31:51):
young players who played at his clubs ended up going
on and playing for the English national team. I think
this is guy who would be a very good developer
of talent and someone who fits the profile of what
the team wants to play on the field. I think
this would be a very good interesting hire. If this
is true, we will have to see, but I would
say Poshatino definitely gets my nod of approval on first
(02:32:14):
blush as we start to look closer and closer and
who the Americans will have next. But that's going to
do it for world of soccer this week, Bernie, We've
got a lot to do here. As I said, next week,
club play is back, Premier League is back, La Liga
is back, Syria is back. The soccer is getting already
into the club levels.
Speaker 4 (02:32:33):
We cannot wait. We'll see you next time.
Speaker 2 (02:32:36):
As Chris said, the MLS is back. Also, it starts
up again August twenty fourth, just thirteen days await coming up.
We wrap up the show and I want to give
up the I want to give the number one overall
draft picks and flowers. Really an impressive debut, made a
great first impression. I'm Bernie Frattle. We are comedy lyon
from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tirek dot Com Studios.
(02:32:57):
Keep it locked. You're listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show
on Fox Sports, Right, all right, wrapping it up on
the Bernie Fraddle Show. The inimitable tones of a Wretha Franklin. Yep,
we do it. We do motown here on the Bernie
Fraddle Show. I want to thank my crew. Great job tonight, Breeze,
thanks so much for jumping in tonight. Out Standing job
from a to Z brand new fool what my name?
(02:33:19):
Keeping his glue together. Mark Ramsey is always turning all
the dials, keeping us afloat, keeping the plane in the air,
and the chef Kevin Wyatt with another baffo performance. Thanks
to the crew. They've been with me since eleven pm
Pacific on Saturday night. I want to give some flowers
to the number one overall draft pick Caleb Williams. He's
(02:33:41):
been a little polarizing, but I got to say you
when he took the field of it, covering the NFL
for a while, covering the lines for ten years, and
he did something the first series on the field that
really impressed me. The pocket collapsed and he recognized what
was happening, and he made a play, and that play
turned into fairly signific positive yardage. He didn't make the
(02:34:03):
play with his arm necessarily, and certainly not his legs.
He made the play with his eyes. Yes, a little
shovel pass as the pocket collapsed, saw it, got rid
of it. He made the play with his eyes. With
all due respect, Justin Fields would have never done that.
He'd taken off and run, spun around like a whirling dervish,
ran around for about thirty eight yards with maybe a
(02:34:24):
net game of tune, and people would have said, oh wow,
look at that man.
Speaker 4 (02:34:29):
Well look at that guy.
Speaker 2 (02:34:30):
Go okay, that's not what you want your NFL quarterback doing.
His quarterback is a position you do play with your eyes.
He received the ball, You make mental snap shots and
you have less than two seconds to execute. I was
very impressed with Caleb Williams's physical latitude, his command of
the position. He seems to play with joy. I liked
(02:34:51):
his footwork, but I will tell you what I observed
over the course of well, he ended up taking twenty
total snaps and he you know, was on the field
for two full drives. And Caleb Williams showed in just
a short amount of time, what is going to brand
(02:35:12):
him as what I consider to be a prolific playmaker,
a unique playmaker. And yes, it's just the preseason, and
yes it's just his first game, and we don't want
to joke around and put him in the one Game
Hall of Fame. But great quarterbacks showed traits right away,
and Caleb Williams showed those trades. Now, it's not just okay,
(02:35:36):
it was four to seven and pass attempts and by
the way, there were a couple of drops, or he
would have been six for seven. Still ninety five yards.
There's nothing wrong with that. If he had seven attempts
and he threw for ninety five yards, well we're talking
about thirteen yards an attempt, which means you're keeping your
eyes down field. He also had to scramble for thirteen
(02:35:58):
yards and in both of Caleb Williams' possessions. As it were,
the two drives he presided over, the Bears got into
the red zone both times, and they ended up in
field goals both times, but they ended up with points
both times. Now, it appears to me that Caleb Williams
(02:36:19):
has very good pocket awareness. Justin fields did not have that.
But he's also gonna be one of those guys that's
gonna have a real ability to make plays out of nothing.
He'll create even if you get out of structure, if
you get out of sync, if you get off schedule.
Because he showed a lot of poise, he showed a
(02:36:40):
lot of awareness, and when he's on the move, his
throws were precise, and I will tell you, for the
first time out of the gate, he showed a lot.
He's very first completion as a pro. Yeah, in the preseason,
it was third and long. You could clearly see he
read his progressions, work through his progressions. All of a
(02:37:01):
sudden he finds DJ Moore for a twelve yard game.
Then later in that same series, he threw a seed
to Cole Comet and he was on the move when
he did it, so he got flushed out. Kept plays alive,
with his feet, kept his eyes downfield, was moving with purpose,
got the ball out of his hand, got it to
Cole Comet, threw a dart on the run. Now, he
(02:37:24):
also later in that same series, hit DeAndre Swift and looked,
you know, with a little bit of a flare. I
don't know if it was a no look pass, but
it was kind of like a no look pass to
DeAndre Swift. And that created a forty two yard game.
And the truth of the matter is what you are
seeing now is a quarterback who may actually live up
(02:37:45):
to the hype. I look, we all know that drafting
a first round quarterback is a complete crapshoot in the NFL,
the the you know, the percentage of success is not great.
But and the Bears, I don't know why Jim mcmah
never gets his flowers. He let him do a Super Bowl.
He was a prolific passer BYU. The Bears have always
been a running defense type team. Now you got a
(02:38:07):
chance for a real quarterback that's gonna make defenses. Create
two game plans, one for the game plan and one
for when the play breaks down and Caleb Williams does
his thing. High hopes for Caleb Williams. He had a
very good, impressive debut and made a great first impression
Saturday against Buffalo. I was very impressed. It's gonna do
it for the Bernie Frattles Show. We'll see you next
(02:38:28):
Friday night, eleven pm. Meantime, keep it locked up next
the great Andy Furman. I'm Fox Sports Radio.
