Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):

of week. My name is Bernie Fratto. We are coming

(00:25):
tire buying should be complete jam Pack Show tonight. We'll
get to all of it later on. We will even
talk about a radical new MLB rule. Boy, what's going
on at Notre Dame of the swimming team of course?
Two am Pacific, five ye Eastern, fresh new sets of
what kind of brand new fool of you? And what

(00:47):
my name is? Much much, much much more. Week two
NFL preseason continues. Saturday's games in the books. How is
your day? Behind the back pass? Sixty six yard field goal,
a Trey Lance sighting? How about a Hawkeye technology first

(01:11):
down measurement in the Raiders game? And you know what,
they made the decision pretty quickly, didn't take three minutes.
Phil Simms didn't have to lose his mind. And then
there's Kayleb Williams, the eye test, the confidence, the great vision.
He's comfortable in his own skin. Are we on the

(01:32):
precipice of greatness? Let's talk about this. I'll do all parallel.
Twenty five years ago, nineteen ninety nine, I'm at the
TPC Dearborn in Michigan for a tournament and Jack Nicholas played,
and lo and behold about eight o'clock at night, sun
was setting on a hot summer night, July, and it
was the perfect setting. There were only about seven or

(01:54):
eight of us around. I was one of them, and
Jack took questions and I asked him, I said, Jack,
is Tiger going to break all your records? Tiger Woods?
I remember this is July of nineteen ninety nine. And
Jack Nicholas says, yeah, he is, but he's still got
to do it. I want to see what his life
looks like after he's married, has a couple of kids,

(02:17):
and his first major injury surgery. Fast forward ten years later,
Jack Nicholas looked like most damis. Tiger Woods, was married,
had two kids, was about to go through a terrible divorce.
You know what happened, We don't need to relive it.
And he had had multiple injuries to his back, on
his knees, and he'd had surgeries. He never broke Jack's records.

(02:40):
Fast forward to Caleb Williams. The sixty four dollars question
going into this season is going to be will Caleb
Williams live up to the hype. Any player, any player
who comes into the NFL as the number one overall pick,
is going to carry a monumental absolute expectation and pre sure,
and Caleb Williams somehow enters this season with an even

(03:04):
higher bar to hit than usual because of although hyperbole
to who much is given, much is expected. With great
power comes great responsibility. And there is no denying that
Caleb Williams is an elite talent. He does have a
ceiling as high as Okay, don't hold this against me.

(03:24):
We're going back to the eye test the guy in
Kansas City, but he's still got to do it, and
we're nowhere near that. But he's about a bazillion times
better than justin Fields and it's not even close. And
please don't make me go there again tonight. I got
more facts and figures than Johnny cochran and you're probably
tired of hearing it, and I'm tired of talking about it.

(03:45):
Justin Fields is not a major league quarterback. Think whatever
the hell you want. Caleb Williams is, but he's got
tons of pressure on him to deliver. He's got to
be the savior for one of the NFL's most storied franchises,
Chicago Bears, and they always talk about never having a quarterback.
Shame you wash your mouth. That was so Jim McMahon
was a hell of a quarterback and delivered the Bears
their only Super Bowl. Didn't put up a lot of yards,

(04:07):
but he won. Yeah, Okay, Obviously there are plenty of
variables that contribute to a quarterback success or failure at
the next level. Trust me, I know covered Lions for
ten years. But a lot of times exterior factors rarely
prevent quarterbacks who fall short of their expectations, and ultimately

(04:29):
it's unfairly placed upon them that there's a bus label
for the rest of their careers if they don't live
up to their expectations. So there you have. You heard
Nick Saban talk about this in episode one of our
knocks with the Bears. Expectations juxtaposed against reality oftentimes are

(04:50):
hard pilled to swallow. Now we are constantly told Williams
will have the luxury of a stellar supporting cast, including
another top ten pick in Roma Dunza. All right, he
looks to have a strong supporting cast, and so therefore
he doesn't have to do it all by himself. But
no quarterback ever does. You have to be surrounded by talent.
Quarterbacks are most reliant position in football. It's the thinnest position.

(05:13):
But the truth of the matter is the hype started
a long time ago when Caleb Williams was a freshman
to Oklahoma. Now, the Bears have rebuilt a lot of
the roster on both sides of the ball, particularly on offense.
They've rebuilt a lot of the offensive line. They've reloaded
a cupboard with some weapons, and a lot of quarterbacks
who are thrown into the fire as Week one starters.

(05:34):
A lot of TIMPs are forced to learn on the job,
maybe not playing with the best talent around them bryce
young situation, but also, hey, feel free to be that
guy to elevate the team around you. Paging c J. Strout.
We've seen guys do it. This is always my beef
with Matt Stafford. You Stafford lovers out there, you didn't
see him in Detroit. I got no beef with Matt Stafford,

(05:55):
except he did everything but win, and he could not
elevate that team. He was in the playoffs. He was
owned seven in the playoff games that had playoff implications,
and he did not do well. And I don't want
to hear about it. The twenty fourteen Lions five Pro Bowlers,
number three ranked defense, plenty of talent, Dominican sue Calvin
Johnson went into Dallas, Stafford turned the ball over twice

(06:17):
in the fourth quarter. He lost the game for him.
So sometimes a quarterback has to elevate the team around him,
and I think Caleb Williams has to do some of
that as well, even though he's got the luxury of
a solid offensive line. That's what they're telling us. The
Bears added more pieces and maybe one of the best
wide receiver rooms in the National Football League. Their word's
not mine. This is all new. So what happens Saturday, Well,

(06:41):
Caleb Williams in Chicago's starting offense, got up a bit
of a slow start, took well into the second quarter
to get into a groove. They had three consecutive three
and outs and then rom with Doonsay got things going.
He had a sixteen yard end around and DJ Moore
and Keenan Allen weren't even in the game. So then
Caleb Williams managed to draw a forty three yard pass interference,

(07:06):
a defensive pass interference. He had targeted Tyler Scott on
a deep ball that got the Bears into the red zone,
which resulted in a field goal, which ultimately is the
measure of a quarterback. The red zone, third down, and
the fourth quarter. They don't pay it upunt. They paid
the score. Then after Caleb Williams connected with let's see,

(07:32):
there was a forty five yard dime that he hit
the duneesy arm that's set up the Bears inside the
red zone on the offense's fifth drive. So by the
time they got to their fifth drive, all of a sudden,
now the Bears had some rhythm. Now had a dunes
they kept his feet in bounds, he would have recorded
his first NFL touchdown, and it was a beauty of
a throw. Williams kept the play alive with his eyes. Yes,

(07:54):
he moves around with his feet, but he does it
with purpose justin fields. Looks to me like something out
of a Monty python cartoon. All right, just cue the music.
He's athletic, But so what Caleb Williams does it with purpose?
Keeps his eyes downfield, seems to know if the defensive
backs are in zone or man demand, So if they're

(08:14):
in their backs to them, he'll run north and south.
If they're in man coverage here on east and west.
His receivers set at just the routes. That's exactly what
Roma dunes the win. It was a pretty play, all
or not, but it was a pretty play. Then one
play later, Caleb Williams really showed off his ability to
scramble and keep his eyes downfield. He ran in a
seven yard touchdown, the first of his preseason. It took

(08:35):
him twenty three snaps to get on the board in
the end zone. The Bears win twenty seven to three. Now, yes,
the Bears are playing against Cincinnati's backups, and the truth
of the matter is, even on defense, the Bears are
really trying to win in the preseason. They're trying to
establish the cult, so they were blitzing. They were all
kinds of stuff. Meanwhile, the Cowboys they played their backups

(08:57):
and the Raiders played their starters. Who knew where the
hell am I going with this whole darn thing. Here's
the reality. As you all know, I covered the Lions
prem post ten years. My final year was two thousand
and eight. What's the significance because here's the bottom line.
You may recall the Lions in the preseason that year.
I covered the greatest preseason team in the history of

(09:19):
the NFL, even better than Josh McDaniel's preseason team a
couple years ago when the Raiders were dancing in the aisles.
The Lions went four to zero in the preseason that year.
In two thousand and eight, they scored eight points and
only gave up thirty two. And you know what, it
didn't mean a damn thing. The Lions were oh and
sixteen when the regular season started old and sixteen. So

(09:44):
what's really the moral of the story. Well, Caleb Williams
live up to the hype. He should, but he still
got to do it. With Tiger break Jack's records. Jack
turned out to depression, Yeah, but he still got to
do it. Things have a way of happening, The future
has a way of arriving ahead of schedule. The bottom line,

(10:04):
the preseason means nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing. Less
than nothing. Let the real games begin. We've only got
twenty two days. Actually, September fifth, Thursday night, we have
our first NFL game Ravens Chiefs. But the first full Sunday,

(10:25):
when the real fun begins, is Sunday, September eight. It's
gonna be glorious. You got four straight Well, let's see.
You've got the Packers. That was just in Green Bay
and they're really excited to go to sell Paul of Brazil.
I met with some of the team folks went to Lambellfield,
had full access. So that's the Friday game. The Thursday
game is Chiefs Ravens. Full slate on Sunday than Monday night.

(10:47):
It'll be a doozy and it'll be here and that's
when things will matter until until then, think whatever you want.
Hope springs eternal. By the way, congrats to Kevin m

all beautiful. And I know he knows, he knows how
to take care of us. He is about as generous
of a man as as you know, and he said
to say hello, but you know, right back to work, right, No,
rest of the weird.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
And congratulations, well deserved contown to kick off. Is now
a year round show? You guys sign on six am
Sunday morning Pacific time? Is that correct? Six am?

Speaker 6 (13:41):
Well Saturday? Well we started today. I was on Today
with Rich and Brian starting Saturday morning six am Pacific
to nine and then Crack and jeffsh Works.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
Will do the show tomorrow. Okay, thanks for correcting me.
Appreciate it, Bud. Congratulations, So let's dive into it. Jared.
My opening commentary covered Lions ten years and is this
one thing I've learned the the preseason means nothing. I
truly believe that. But what are some takeaways you had
today you might want to share with the folks.

Speaker 6 (14:10):
Well, you know, it's funny. I was just watching the
end of that Raiders game. Strey Lance has been pretty
good for ballots and it was against FOURT stringers, and
I agree, you know, I'm not going to go, you know,
like the world on Archestray Lance had a really good
half against fort stringers. But I saw what Kyle Shanahan
probably saw when they took him what third overall when
I traded up for him. I think there's been some

(14:31):
good performances throughout the preseason. I think my opinion on
the preseason has changed since I've moved to Vegas. So
before I moved to Vegas, I was much anti betting
the preseason, and it was a lot of the same
reasons that you probably heard, right, the games don't matter,
and you know, I don't know the players, I don't

(14:52):
know the quarterbacks, and I think those are all fair
pushbacks on why you wouldn't want to get involved with.

Speaker 7 (14:59):
The pre season.

Speaker 6 (15:01):
But I think my counter to that is, don't tell
these you know, end of the roster players in the
fourth quarter that are about to get cut that the
games don't matter. I think it matters them. Like I
just watched the entire second half of that Cowboys Raiders
game very intently, the most intently I've watched the football
game since the Super Bowl last year. And those guys
care like they are getting up in the line of scrimmage.

(15:23):
The third and the fourth guy is getting to the
pile and making the tackles, and they're getting up and
they're acting like it's the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl.
And I think the one reason that the preseason does
offer some value obviously, you know, besides just the players
playing hard, is it's a more liquid market. The numbers
will move faster. If you're on the right side of
the move, you could get unprecedented you know, closing line

(15:47):
value in just a few hours. I've seen lines go
from one to four, you know, hour two before game time.
That doesn't happen in the regular season, barring injury. So
it's just a different approach. You have to learn more players,
you have to learn more quarterbacks, to do more work,
but there is vetting value there if you are willing
to do that work.

Speaker 8 (16:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
Look, we had a seven point favorite lose out right.
Today we had a nine point favorite news out right.
There's a reason the books put limited action on these games.
It's all about information and see only professional sport where
I truly believe on one side of the line, the
coach really wants to win. On the other side, the
coach doesn't care. And if you can figure out who
those are exactly, you know. So let's talk about the Cowboys,

(16:29):
and I'm glad you talked about them. I feel strongly
they're going under their win total this year, and I've
given my reasons on my show, so I'll leave that
to you. You tell me if you agree or disagree
with what your reasons are.

Speaker 6 (16:40):
So I'm a little more neutral on Dallas. I'm very
high on Stilly this year, which makes me which makes
it harder to be higher on the other teams in
their division. You know, the Dallas is a regular season bully,
and I think that is something of no right. They've
won twelve games in each of the last year regular seasons,

(17:01):
and they do have I would say, if you want
to go top three in the league in terms of battery,
most important players, quarterback, receiver, Rush end Dack CD and
Micah Parsons. I mean, that's that's that's pretty good. That's
among some of the best in the league, for sure.
I think losing dan Quinn will end up being a

(17:23):
detriment to them. I think their offensive line has taken
a big step backs into the great offensive lines of
recent memory, and I think their secondary is very boom
or buff, which you can be good, but it also
can be bad. The early part of our schedule is favorable.
If they can get past that game against the Browns,
and then you know they have a cupcake the following

(17:44):
week at home against the Saints, and then the Ravens
game is obviously tough. But then Giants Steelers, I think,
is you know, two winnable games, and then you get
to a really tough part of the schedule Detroit, San Francisco, Atlanta, Philly, Houston.
I mean, that is a really difficult five game stretch.
They'll be lucky to get through that stretch. Three and two,
two and three, one and four very much possible there,

(18:05):
especially back to back road games at San Francisco at Atlanta.
I mean, I think it playing Atlanta is gonna be
tough this year, and you know, playing Tenisco back to back,
I think that's a really tough stretch. So I would
lean under on Dallas's win total, but I think I'm
higher on Philly and I'm a little bit more neutral,
is what I would say on the Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
I'm also high on Philly. Jared and I know it's
against the law of practice psychology without a license, but
I feel just the negative vibe with Mike McCarthy being
dangled out there ceedee lamb, although I think they'll get
that done. Micah Parsons, Dack wanting money. There's just an
air of unfavorability that I think, I think creeps in.

(18:42):
And if they lose at Cleveland Week one, which I
think they might, it could just set the stage. But
that's just my opinion. Let's move on. Talk about the
New York Jets. The hope is Aaron Rodgers is healthy
the entire year. With that defense, I actually am bullish
on them. Maybe I'm wrong. I think they can go
over there whin totally your thoughts.

Speaker 6 (19:00):
Yeah, I mean I think so. I'm a Jets fan,
so I am a torture Jet fan. It's almost to
the point where I am the anti Homer, right, Like
we get accused of being homers in this business all
the time. People accused me of being the anti Homer.
You're so down on the Jets last year. I was skeptical.
I really was. And obviously I was excited, but I

(19:21):
was still skeptical. I remember I did a video about
a week or two before the season started and I said,
and it was a podcast, and it was with a
you know, it was more of a fun vibe. So
I was being a little loosey goosey about it, and
I said, this team's been losers for decade. You know,
they're just supposed to magically not be losers overnight. That
takes time, and I don't think Robert Salad is the
type of coach that it's going to happen overnight. It

(19:43):
didn't happen like it did in Houston, you know for
Jamiko Ryan. So I think if you were going to
ask me, what is Robert Sala's coaching personality? Tough, gritty,
I think Tomiko Ryan's, you know, defensive guy. Like I
think like the writing was on the wall for the
Jets to have one.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
Of those seasons.

Speaker 6 (20:02):
Granted it was a rookie quarterback last year in Houston,
and Aaron Rodgers was not a rookie, but it's like
that was all there for them and it fell apart.
It was like Christmas was canceled and we have to
wait another year. And I want to say it's going
to be better because half of the bandwaggoners that were
on the all of the bandline last year I all
jumped off. I think they did the right things in

(20:22):
the off season. They addressed the offensive line. The first
round PICKO Lukushan, who might not even see the field
unless there's an injury, and that's a good thing. You
know if you have two you know staatefle tackles that
you brought in in free agency, Moses and Smith, and
both of them are injury prone. So you know we're
gonna see for Shana at some point. But you know
what I'm hearing in campus, he's practicing left hand right
tackle because he doesn't know where he's going to get

(20:44):
the reps. Whoever goes down first is where he's going
to slide in. So I think they're kind of over
the Mackai Becton disaster. I still think they're beIN at receiver.
I don't trust Mike Williams to say I help you
the whole year. I love Garrett Wilson. Here's what I
also love. I think what Joe Douglas has done a
great job of over the last few years is dropping.
You get bris Hall, who looks to be all the
rage Alba Kanda, the kid from pitt had a couple flashes,

(21:07):
but it doesn't look like he's going to pan out,
but he's still show talent. Now this year they bring
in Braylen Allen from Wisconsin. I think in the third
round he's looked unbelievable. And so you've got Hall and Allen.
You've got two backs that are young south of twenty
five on their rookie deals that could just absolutely turn.
So I think the offense is ready, the offensive line
is ready. Rogers, please just stay healthy.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
If he's seventy five.

Speaker 6 (21:27):
Percent of what he was in Green Bay. The Jets
are a ten of eleven.

Speaker 2 (21:30):
Win team this year. I agree with. They won seven
games last year with very less than average quarterback play,
and I still like that defense. So we'll see you
bring up a lot of good points. Finally, Jared, is
there a team out there in the National Football League
that we're not talking about that could theoretically do what
the Houston Texans did last year? And really raising my brows?

(21:53):
I don't mean to put you on the spot like that,
but who maybe are you looking at? Perhaps it's undervalued
right now, and maybe we look up on October and say, man,
why did we see that coming?

Speaker 6 (22:03):
Well? I do like when you put me on the
spot because it keeps me on my toes. Bernie, That's
what we do here, right. I think I think I
don't think we're I don't think there's a rookie quarterback
sneak up situation is gonna happen this year. Like Houston,
I think the sneak up situations are with the coaches.
For example, I think Mike McDonald has a chance to

(22:25):
do that in Seattle. Now he doesn't have a rookie quarterback,
so it's hard to compare that to what happened last
year with c J. Stroud.

Speaker 2 (22:33):
Gino Smith is still good.

Speaker 6 (22:35):
I don't call him great. I think he's still good,
good enough if the rest of the team is legit.
Seattle's biggest issue last year was their defense. Well, now
they brought in arguably the best defensive mind that we've
seen in the last decade or so that five years
with Baltimore. That was a historic defense last year for
the Ravens. So I think, you know, everything Baltimore did
last year was historic. And if that vibe comes in

(22:58):
day one like Deniko Ron was able to bring it
in day one, then Seattle has the rest of the
team in place. The offense is stacked. I mean, you know,
go look at their still positioning guys metcap Lockett, Jackson.

Speaker 2 (23:11):
Smith and Jigba.

Speaker 6 (23:12):
That's as good as a one two three as you're
gonna find the offensive line's good, not great, and Gino
can can carry the mail like he has shown that
he can at least still play at an average to
slightly above average level. So the fact that Seattle's at
seven and a half wins right now. I see them
as a playoff team. You know what else I see
has a playoff roster. I said to say on the show,

(23:33):
if Sam Donald's average for Minnesota, the Vikings are ready
to roll. I mean, Ryan Flores and that defense is legit.

Speaker 7 (23:38):
The rest of the roster.

Speaker 6 (23:39):
Is at they might have outside of quarterback, which obviously
accounts for the most most important position. If you remove
the quarterback and how important he is, they might have
the best roster in the league. Really, it's really impressive.
I think San Francisco's up there. I think Minnesota's probably
in the top five. But you put Darnald in there
and obviously greatly decreases the value of their roster. But

(24:00):
you just go down the line. They bring in Aaron Jones,
Jefferson Addison, You've got Darris at left tackle, who's a rockstar.
Howkinson's an All.

Speaker 2 (24:06):
Pro tight end.

Speaker 6 (24:07):
I mean, if if Darnold is average, I think Minnesota
is a playoff team. If Gino Smith is averaged, I
think Seattle is a playoff team.

Speaker 2 (24:16):
Good stuff, Jared, appreciate your buddy as always in once again,
congratulations Countdown to Kickoff? All the best, Thank you, Bern.
There's Jared Lee Smith you here on Saturday mornings Countdown
to Kickoff on our network. Truly does his homework Finger
on the Pulse, and we'll have him on throughout the season.
We're just getting started and we have so much to
get to. We will get to that MLB rule probably

(24:38):
about one point thirty am. I want to bring in
the crew on this. The Notre Dame story is Craig Cray.
I'm going to give an AFC East North preview later
in the show, Brand New Fool, What my name are?
We're just getting started, but coming up, I want to
circle back to the Cowboys. You all know you don't
need me to tell you the importance of CD Lamb

(24:58):
to the Cowboys offense, even with him in the lineup.
I think they're dubious this year. I think they're a
nine win team, maybe an eight win team. We'll see.
But if they don't get this contract signed, it could
be even worse. I think they'll get it signed, and
based on what I heard Friday, there's some light at
the end of the tumble tonnel. I'll share that coming up,
but first let's go to our guy, the chef, Kevin Wyrett,

(25:20):
with the latest.

Speaker 9 (25:21):
Yeah, Bernie, we are in the dog days of August,
so the Pennant race is really taking shape. In Major
League Baseball, the Dodgers lead in the National League West
now just two games. They lost to the Cardinals earlier
today five to two, while the Padres get back in
the win colum against the Rockies, winning at eight to three,
so San Diego two games back of Los Angeles for

(25:43):
that NL West lead. The Diamondbacks did lose today as
Arizona playing the Rays, and they lost a six to
one there, so Arizona three games behind the Dodgers for
that NL West lead. It's tightening though in the AL Central,
as the Twins picking up a game on the Guardians.

(26:05):
The Twins beat the Rangers five to two. Cleveland falls
to the Brewers two to one, so Cleveland's lead two
games in that AL Central. The menace, excuse me, the
Seattle Mariners sinking like a stone. There are four games
now back of the Houston Astros. They've lost five straight games,
including a defeat to the Pirates on Saturday seven to two.

(26:30):
The Astros beat the White Sox six to one. The
Braves over the Angels eleven to three. In the NFL preseason,
Caleb Williams getting his first touchdown of the preseason that
was a seven yard scamper. The Bears beat the Bengals
twenty seven to three. Daniel Jones really struggling in his
return from his ACL injury. He played for the Giants

(26:51):
in their preseason game against the Tans Texans and through
two interceptions that did not look good at times as
a Houston a bloat works.

Speaker 10 (27:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (27:00):
Houston blows out the New York Giants twenty eight to ten,
Lions over the Chiefs twenty four to twenty three, Vikings
beat the Browns twenty seven twelve, Titans over the Seahawks
sixteen fifteen, Colts beat the Cardinals twenty one thirteen, Dolphins
over the Commanders thirteen to six, and the Bills beat
the Steelers nine to three. Justin Fields did have ninety
two yards, but it was a struggle all day for

(27:21):
that Steelers offense. Jets over the Panthers fifteen to twelve.
Rams beat the Chargers thirteen to nine, Jaguars over the
Buccaneers twenty to seven, and the Cowboys beat the Raiders
twenty seven to twelve.

Speaker 10 (27:32):
Back to you, Bernie, all right, thanks chef.

Speaker 2 (27:34):
So as I mentioned Ceedee Lamb and their Cowboys contract,
he's unhappy. He wants more money. And there appears to
be light at the end of the time, and that
light might not be a and you know oncoming train
just about three weeks until the first NFL Sunday, and

(27:58):
you need the Cowboys need Ceedee Lamb on the field
if they have any designs on doing anything this year.
He is. The Cowboys right out of the gate are
going to face a Cleveland Browns defense that surrounded the
fuse total yards per game in the last ten years.
They were right around the legion of Boom Seattle Seahawks

(28:19):
defense in terms of stats. Yeah. Fact, so you'd want
to have your best offensive playmaker on the field. That
would be Cede Lamb. He was All Pro in twenty
twenty three, led the NFL in catches, ranked second in
the league in receiving yards, third and receiving touchdowns. Caught
one hundred and thirty five balls almost eighteen hundred yards.

(28:40):
He broke Michael Irvin's single season Cowboy records. He's twenty
five years old and he wants more money. We all
know it's been repeated a thousand times that Jerry Jones
made the statement a couple of weeks back that he
didn't have the sense of urgency to rush to get
Lamb's deal done with only just a few weeks until
the start of the sea. But maybe Jerry is softening

(29:03):
a little bit. We hear that Dallas and their front
office in Lamb's representation, they had a little telecon Thursday
prior to the team flying to Vegas. Cowboys beat the
Raiders Saturday night, twenty seven to twelve. Cowboys basically played
played a team that will all be working at App
Auto Parts in a month, and they hammered the Raiders.

(29:23):
By the way, there's nothing wrong with working at App
Auto Parts, great company, good Christian values, all that stuff.
But Dallas played without NFL players tonight did pretty well.
And Terry Lance is not an NFL player. He did
pretty well. But I digress. You need C. D. Lamb.
So we're hearing that. And this is a report from
the Dallas Morning News that reportedly the Cowboys have offered

(29:48):
Lamb just under thirty three million per season. It's a
nice number that would make him the second highest paid
receiver in the NFL on an average per year salary basis,
just ahead of aj Brown, a boy about half a million dollars,
and just behind the number one dude, Justin Jefferson in Minnesota.

(30:11):
Now you've got Micah, You've got a lot of miles
defeeding Dallas. You got Michael Parsons, who deserves to be paid.
Dak who wants sixty million dollars doesn't deserve it. He
hasn't earned it. As Jared Lee Smith said, Yeah, they've
been a bully in the regular season, but so what,
he's two and five in the playoffs. That's where you
make your bones. In the playoffs. That look like a
drunk crossing in icy street. I don't want any excuses
made for Dak Prescott. All right, good player, not in

(30:34):
the playoffs. But I don't know that this deal gets
done just yet, because I still think, I still think
he wants to be paid. I'm talking about Ceedee Lamb
more than Justin Jefferson. Now, Justin Jefferson signed a four year,
one hundred and forty million dollars. You've got one hundred
and ten million guaranteed. He's the second highest paid non

(30:56):
quarterback in the league. The highest paid non quarterback is
Nick Bosa. Are the forty nine ers. He got a
five year, one seventy got one hundred and twenty two
million guaranteed. Now we are hearing that Michael Parsons and
Ced Lamb both want to be the NFL's highest non
quarterback pithe paid non quarterback, So something's got to give.

(31:20):
But apparently there seems to be progress right now. Of course,
Mike McCarthy wade and he says, quote, we miss CD,
we love CD. He'll be great once he gets here. Okay,
that's all wonderful, Mike. It's like, whatever whatever happens in
fight club stays in fight club. Very cute, very clever, Mike.
Whatever happens is his business. We have all the confidence.

(31:43):
Bo Okay, take my back with these gratuitous comments. The
bottom line is that Dallas has two choices. Get CD
Lamb in camp and maybe have a good season, or
don't get CD Lamb in camp. And I think that's
the first of a set of dominoes that begin to fall. Look,
Jerry likes being a control freak. Have you figured that out?

(32:06):
My prediction, CDA get paid, Michael get paid. I don't
know about Mike McCarthy. I don't know about him, but
I think Dackle end up getting paid. They don't want
to go back to the Drew Henson Quincy Carter era,
and that's what's going to happen. And all the teeth
gnashing and all the fake outrage from people like all that. Jerry,
he's a bad guy. You know, he takes too long

(32:26):
to pay his players. Well, guess who benefits from that?
The players? They end up getting more. That's the way
it's been working. So look, the Cowboys, whether you like
them or not, they appear to be I say this
in a colloquial sense, in America's team. More people watch
Cowboys games than any other franchise last year, including the
Kansas City Chiefs. Those are just the facts coming up. Yeah,

(32:48):
they haven't even played a game yet. We're twenty two
days away from our full Sunday, but there are three
coaches that are already listed as being on the hot seat. Yep,
can't make this, folks. I'm Bernie Friday. We are coming
to live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio tirerac
dot com studios. Keep it locked right here. You're listening

(33:09):
to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (33:13):
Listen Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (33:16):
You're back on the Bernie Fraddle Show Fox Sports Radio.
Come to live from the tire ak dot com studios
here in Las Vegas. We'll take you up to three
am Pacific, six am Eastern. We are just getting rolling
the NFL and their hot seat list starts out pretty hot.

(33:38):
Yep uh. We know the seasons right around the corner.
We've already had two weeks of preseason games or gets
more on Sunday, then Week three and then Thursday, September
fifth at all starts and already based on expectations, based
on the firestorm on these franchises, like it or not.

(34:03):
There are three coaches that are actually on the proverbial
hot seat. The first one obviously Mike McCarthy. If you
don't think he's on the hot seat, well, I'm trying
to remember the last time an NFL coach was coaching
a season on the last year of his contract without

(34:25):
a renewal. It's pretty tough to do that for multiple reasons.
But I think Jerry Jones has had enough. He's eighty
two years old and he wants to win a Super Bowl,
wants to prove the world that he can do without
Jimmy Johnson and the Barry Switzer one doesn't count. Even
Jerry knows that. How does Dallas mentally function this year?

(34:47):
Dak Prescott remains unsigned beyond this season so far as
we sit here Saturday night at eleven forty nine pm
Pacific time, Dak, in addition to Dak Prescott, Ceedee Lamb,
arguably their most productive offensive player, is not getting the
money he wants. He's not in camp. The Cowboys eventually

(35:10):
got to take care of Michael Parsons. They Let's not
forget the Cowboys lost defensive coordator Dan Quinn to Washington
Division rival and let's you know, Dallas's defense was aggressive
and explosive and productive, turning teams over. And what happens

(35:30):
at the end of last year another embarrassing in, another
embarrassing in for a team that just has too much
on the field talent to keep choking it out the
season after season, in the postseason when it mattered most matters,
most the pressure is already mounting, and the preseason is
just getting started, and the regular season is going to

(35:52):
start with a bang in Cleveland. So there's no doubt
by any measure that Mike McCart dorothy is number one
of all the coaches on the hot seat. Would it
surprise me if he's gone after this year, Not at all,
even in the light of the fact Jerry He's really
had a long leash with his coaches. Would it surprise

(36:13):
me if Mike McCarthy doesn't last the season? Not really
depends what happens. Remember years and years and years ago,
Jason Garrett took over in midseason and had success right away,
never really did much after that. We get that, But
McCarthy has Look he's done it in the regular season.
Twelve wins, three years in a row, and that in

(36:34):
fifty cents will get you a cup of coffee at
Burger Chefs and knock yourself out. The other coach very
much on the hot seat, Robert Sala, he's a very
close second to Mike McCarthy. And you've heard Jason Smith
talk about Robert sal He doesn't believe in him, and
you know what, the jury's out of I like Robert

(36:55):
Sala was a Michigan guy, is a dearborn Michigan guy.
I know his roots. He was an outstanding defensive court
for the forty nine ers, but that doesn't always translate.
Going from being the head coach of the defense of
the CEO head coach overall is not a transition that
many people can make. I'm not saying he can't, but
this is the year where Robert Sala has to produce results,

(37:18):
have to get to the playoffs, win a playoff game.
I think clearly he and Aaron Rodgers started out the
offseason poorly. The think was completely mishandled. I think Robert
Salad displayed a lack of panache when he outed Rogers,
saying that you know, he was on a trip and
he missed the mandatory camp, and I think he could

(37:42):
have been more shrewd than that. And I gotta tell
you they're joined at the hit because without Aaron Rodgers
the Jets, you know, you got a better chance of
Led Zeppelin re recording the Gilligan Zland theme song and
selling a million copies for the Jets to go to
the playoffs, and Johnson Bull the whole thing up. God forbid,
something happens Aaron Rodgers this year, and remember how bad

(38:04):
they were without Aaron Rodgers last year. It's a good roster,
I believe that. But if your forty year old quarterback
misses significant time this year, then the whole regime is
in trouble, starting with Robert Salah finally, believe it or not,
Matt Aberfluss. He may not be on the hot s heap,
but he's on the warm seat, all right. If somehow

(38:25):
they tank another season with a very gifted quarterback. Justin
Fields was tremendous at Ohio State, tremendous and a tremendous
human being, not a major league quarterback. That's why it
was ten and twenty eight. Caleb Boilliams is a bazillion
times better, but he still got to do it. And
there's a feeling that Williams is surrounded with talent and

(38:48):
the Barris are poised, but she still got to do it.
And if somehow eber Flues fails again, and I don't
know what that means, let's say they're under five hundred, eh,
I think all bets could be off in Chicago. Am
I predicting that?

Speaker 3 (39:00):
No?

Speaker 2 (39:01):
I'm not. I like Matt Eberfluss. Finally, a couple of
honorable mentions. Dennis Allen in New Orleans. He's the definition
of mediocre since taking over for Sean Payton two years ago,
and he wasn't exactly great with the Raiders. And finally,
I think Philadelphia is gonna have a good season. I
really believe it. But the bar is so high in

(39:21):
Philadelphia that if Nick Sirianni doesn't get them to the
NFC Championship Game or maybe the super Bowl, or maybe
win a championship, I think the lease becomes very short
in Philadelphia. And they may not be fair, but that's
also reality. And I don't really know a lot about
the rift between Sirianni and Jalen Hurts, but if it's
real and they don't have success, well it'll be a

(39:44):
lot harder to replace Jalen Hurts. It would be to
replace Nick Sirianni, and I like Nick Sirianni. So there
you have it. Yeah, the hot seat, the Proverbia hot
Seat coming up, Mark Medina, Medina Magic, We dive into
the NBA. There was NBA news this week. Keep it locked.
You're listening to The Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah,
that's right, you heard the man Bernie Fraddle showkeys rolling

(40:06):
right along. My name is Bernie Frattle. We are comedy Live.
The tyrock dot Com studio is here in Las Vegas,
Fox Sports Radio, tyreck dot com. We'll help you get
there and on max selection fans, free shipping, free road
afford protection at over ten thousand recommending installers, tyreq dot com.
The way tire buying should be. It is that time

(40:26):
of the week. We do it every Saturday night at
twelve midnight Pacific because fifty two weeks in the year,
the NBA finds its finds a way to stay in
the news, and this week was no different. Simply said,
it's that time. Gina Magic, Markvidinner a Fox Sports Radio

(40:47):
NBA Gurule. You hear them all around the network. You
hear them every Saturday night on the Bernie Frattle Show
at midnight, twelve midnight Pacific time. Mark, how are you, buddy?

Speaker 7 (40:56):
I'm doing well. You know that's the grill every midnight
on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (41:00):
So before I dive into the news of the week,
I want to just digress for a second. We both
agreed last week Lebron was deserving to win the MVP
in the Olympics. But you know, what would Olympics be,
What would a Lebron's story be without some controversy. And
there are people who've actually made a pretty darn good
compelling case that it should have been step But I

(41:22):
buried the lead so apparently Brian Windhorst reported that the
voting started before the semi final game was even played.
So is there some merit here to the fact that
if they had not held the voting until after the
thing was over, we might have had a different story.
What do you know about this situation?

Speaker 7 (41:42):
Yeah, I mean, it's exactly where you outlined that. Unlike
in the NBA finals, when the ballots or you know,
are candid out like a minutes before the game ends,
this took place a lot sooner. Now. I think even
when you account for the fact that Steph Curry shot
whites out both against Serbia and in the final against France,

(42:03):
I still would have considered Lebron to be the MVP
of the Olympics because he was study from start to finish,
And no doubt, if TSA didn't have Lebron's Steph Curry
or Kevin Durant on the team, they won have won gold.
But I think when you compare and contrast all through
those players, Lebron was the most consistent and most available.

(42:24):
As you may know, Kevin Durant was out during exhibition
play because it was a calf injury, and Lebron at
that point was very critical because he was really the
lone og on the team that could, you know, kind
of establish some sort of presence.

Speaker 2 (42:38):
Yeah, I agree with that, Mark. I mean, he was
a tour de force. He was a force in nature
the entire month, and he set a tone for that team.
And even when you have the ball in his hands,
he set that tone. So it's difficult to disagree with.
And onward and upward. But you know, these are what
make for good sports talk fodder. Let's talk about Lebron
because we're going to give to the NBA schedule. I

(42:59):
think they'd some ingenious things. You probably already know this.
Lebron turns forty years old and on Christmas Eve in
Los Angeles. Check that New Year's Eve, Lebron will play
his first game at forty years old against his former team,
the Cavaliers. Make your New Year's Eve plans, your thoughts.

Speaker 7 (43:19):
It's going to be a great game. No need to
make New Year's Years plans except at you know, Crypto
dot Com Arena, because it's going to be a good game. Obviously,
the connection with him playing against his former team. Now,
I think that we can establish that there's no chance
of him returning to Cleveland. He just signed that extension
with the Lakers. But I think it's going to be

(43:41):
a good game because you know, they the Cavaliers, you know,
had a pretty good offseason with gain extensions, extensions with
Donovan Mitchell and making sure that he wasn't going to
go anywhere. But yeah, I think it'll bring kind of
a nostalgis so to speak, for how everything is. But

(44:02):
I think at the same time, it's going to really
illustrate whether the Lakers are the real deal or if
it's just going to be a team headlined by Lebron
ad and no one else, And that kind of remains
an open question weave into the twenty four to twenty
five season.

Speaker 2 (44:17):
I just think I want to give the NBA a
lot of credit. I don't think that was a coincidence obviously, right,
that's clearly planned and the NBA does a lot of
very clever things with the schedule, we're going to get
to most of them here. Lebron in his twenty second season.
One of the things that will mark this season, it's
likely that he'll be on the floor with Bronni at

(44:38):
some point. When do you expect that to happen.

Speaker 7 (44:41):
I expect to happen in training camp, and really, to
be frank with you, Bernie, I don't think it will
happen beyond that. I think that Bronni will spend the majority,
if it's not all, his time in the G League,
so that father son's story the moment, that'll be a
training camp story, and then I don't think that that

(45:01):
story will fester the rest of the regular season, because
I think the reality is this. He's a fifty fifth pick.
He could have gone on drafted, and based off of
what we saw in Summer League and also what we
saw at USC, we know that he's not NBA ready
and all he needs to do is get more reps,
and the only way to do that is to be
in the G League'll see.

Speaker 2 (45:23):
I'm so glad you mentioned that, because, in much the
same way, I heard from a very well placed source
two months ago that it looked like the Pistons would
eat Monty Williams contract, and they did. My source was right.
I also heard from a very good, well placed source
that Lebron and Broni will get on the floor for
a preseason game, and I think that counts in my

(45:44):
humble opinion that councer, it's the NBA may not be
a regular season game, but it's still never happened, so
would it be your assertion. And we don't know that
Bronni does play with Lebron in a preseason game, and
whether or not he ends up on the regular season
floor with him remains to be seen.

Speaker 7 (46:01):
Yeah, remains to be saying. I think that, you know,
obviously that's going to depend on how quickly he can develop.
Some of them might just be on need on if there,
you know, are a lot of injuries. But I think
that most likely that that storyline, as far as you know,
in fairness to the James family, a really cool moment,
that's a preseason story because they can have that moment.

(46:24):
You know, it's obviously unprecedented, but they're here to win
basketball games. So in preseason you're about, you know, just
trying to get your established players some rhythm going in
the regular season, and then you know, the head coach
is trying to iron out the end of the rotation
and also evaluate with the front office, you know, which

(46:44):
guys are suitable for CHI League invites. So I think
what we're going to see is this, Uh, when they
play the Milwaukee Bucks a team mobile arena, that's the
first or not not to mobile arena when they play.
When they're playing the Springs October fourth, that's when there
that's when the Brownie James moment will happen because that's

(47:07):
the first preseason game and so they'll get it out
of the way.

Speaker 2 (47:11):
All right. Good, good to know talking Mark Medina Medina
Magic every Saturday night here on the Bernie Frattle Show.
And uh, you know, the DNBA is always in the news.
This week's no difference. The into a Dome opens this week.
One scheduling oddity, the Lakers won't play I say this
in air quotes, visit the into a Dome to play
an away game at the Clippers until January nineteenth. Why

(47:33):
do you think the NBA waited that long? I it
would have been maybe cool to have the Lakers Clippers
play as a crosstown rival sooner. Just a thought your thoughts.

Speaker 7 (47:42):
Yeah, I would have liked for it to be sooner,
but I think that in a way, the Clippers probably
like that because one of the reasons why they went
into it theme is they want to get out of
a Lakers' shadow. They want to establish their identity, and
if you have a Lakers matchup so early in the season,
may be that arena is filled with just Lakers because

(48:03):
it is in Los Angeles. That's a good Yeah, So
I do get it. I'm surprised to wait that long,
but I'm not surprised that they decided, you know what,
opening night, you're not going to have the Lakers Clippers
because the Clippers want to have their identity. And I
think the same thing with the Christmas Day matchups, you know,

(48:23):
for the same reason as well. It's just trying to
you know, spread out the uh, you know, representation around
the league. So it's fitting that the Lakers are going
to be in Golden State Christmas Day because of the
fact that obviously Lebron and Steph have had so much
history together, you know, as opponents, but now they have
recent history as you know, Olympic teammates, So it all

(48:46):
makes sense across the Lord.

Speaker 2 (48:48):
Well, they do open up. The Clippers do open up
the endo It Dome against a very formidable opponent October
twenty third, the Phoenix Suns. Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, Mark,
we're just learning a lot about the Intuit Dome. What
can you tell us about the wall having to do
with something to do with curtailing visiting fans? Do do

(49:09):
you know much about that?

Speaker 7 (49:11):
Yeah, well, I was able to see the Intwit Dome.
I mean, obviously we won't see what it's going to
be like until there's actual games and fans there. But
the whole idea that the in Twip Dome has beyond
you know, they want to have their own identity and
have modern amenities, is that Steve Balmer is really trying
to create an atmosphere that they can get a true

(49:32):
home court advantage with you know, fans being in their seat,
and so there's a lot of incentives for fans to
be in their seat as opposed to wandering around the concourse.
You know, they're they're setting up things where when you
look at the concessions, a lot of it's grab and
go they have. I mean, Steve Balmer, it feels like

(49:53):
this is his prize achievement, that they have so many
urinals in the arena of the idea is that you're
not going to have long bathroom waves, and so the
wall is for the ultimate devoted Clipper fan that can
give them that home court advantage, and that's their hope
that that's one of many things that make that venue unique.

Speaker 2 (50:16):
So let's talk about the NBA Cup because that's part
of the schedule as well. It was a resounding success
last year. It starts November twelfth. The championshi will be
here in Las Vegas December seventeenth. Some interesting matchups out
of the gates next seventy six Ers, Mavericks, Warriors, et cetera, Cavaliers, Celtics.

(50:36):
Do you believe the NBA Cup continues its popularity this
year or was the newness of it last year part
of the reason it did so well.

Speaker 7 (50:45):
I think that there was an intrigue on what it
was going to look like, and frankly, a lot of
people didn't quite know. I know, talking to different coaches
and executives before the n season tournament started, they didn't
know what the buying would be like. They thought that
teams that were young and up and coming they would
embrace it because this is their chance to sell winning

(51:07):
and hope. And they also thought that, you know, the
players at the end of the rotation would want to
play because look, financial incentives like winning five hundred thousand dollars,
it means a lot to those players. But I think
it's actually going to be better this season because we
saw that it was successful. There was a lion from
top to bottom. It helped that the Lakers want and

(51:29):
it helped that Lebron set the tone. I know everyone
rolls their eyes on what the nd season tournament actually
meant because in the grand scheme of things, it meant nothing.
But I think from a bottom line perspective, it's good
and it was a way to keep you know, both
devoted and casual fans, you know, I think committed to

(51:50):
the NBA regular season when normally they start shunting out
after the initial buzz of opening weeks. So yeah, I
just think it's going to continue to get better. I
don't think that you know, players are going to be
so you know, exuberant with winning it, but I think
that there will be a buy in because the last
time they checked, no matter how much money, professional athletes

(52:13):
make they always like making more listen.

Speaker 2 (52:16):
It's undeniable the buzz that was created in terms of
a tendency to the Arenas, viewership, on TV, engagement by
players and coaches, and it's pretty clear the Lakers wanted
to win it. Is there? Do the Lakers want to
win it again this year? Do you think or what
are your thoughts? Are there any teams that say, heck
with it, we want to win this thing? Am I
missing that? Or is it just the money driven thing?

Speaker 7 (52:40):
Well, it's definitely money driven, but I think it's really
roster driven on where a team is at. I think that,
you know, again, talking to people before the event started,
they thought that everyone would have a buying at the
beginning and then it would just depend on how difficult
or taxing its and if championship contending teams would figure out,

(53:03):
you know what, we got to prioritize health more than
nothing else, they might start phasing out out of it.
But as soon as they feel like the game's competitive
within reach and it's not going to be overly taxing, every
team is going to buy in. So to ask your
question to the Lakers want to win the championship, I
don't think that they're going so overboard to say we

(53:24):
want to defend it, But I think that they are
trying to set a tone about, you know, making sure
they still are a playoff caliber team with Lebron and
ad on the roster, and obviously JJ Reddick's trying to
lay some roots down as a first year head coach.
So if nothing else, I think they want to set
a foundation. And but I will say that they might

(53:46):
draw some learning lessons about the potential downside of winning
the tournament last year because they weren't, you know, a
guess again enamored with winning it, but there was I
feel a little bit of a let down as far
as their energy level the next few games after it,
and that was I think the worst stretch that they

(54:07):
showed all season in their play. So maybe, you know,
the Lakers and other teams are more mindful of that
for the second go round.

Speaker 2 (54:16):
We're wrapping it up with Mark Mendina Medina Magic every
Saturday night here twelve midnight Pacific time on The Bernie
Frattle Show. So we know, Mark, we've talked about this
that the NFL has thrown down the gauntlet on Christmas
Day and the NBA in the NFL will go head
to head and we all talk about Father Time being undefeated.

(54:38):
The NFL appears to be undefeated, but the NBA is
not going down without a fight. I am really impressed
with what the NBA has done with these showdowns. You
open up San Antonio's at the Knicks. Clearly Victor Wembinyama
is embracing is a guy that embraces playing on a
big stage, and it feels like the NBA is going

(54:59):
to put him on his many big stages as possible
this year, starting with Christmas Day.

Speaker 7 (55:04):
Your thoughts, Yeah, there's a lot to attack when it
comes to the NBA Christmas Day games and the NFL component.
I think that when you're looking at the NBA's schedule
here this year, they picked all the right games. I
mean you mentioned Spurs, Knicks, you got Victor one, but Yama,
the Knicks could be a contender this season. You got Minnesota, Dallas,
you know they played in the West Finals last year. Philadelphia, Boston,

(55:26):
you know Philadelphia things are in Eastern Conference contender with
game Paul George obviously the felizer, defending champs, Lakers Warriors,
they have a lot of history, Nuggets, Suns, they have
a lot of history and shipping this, so they chose
all the right matchups to what you were saying, well,
how does this fair to the NFL. I know, talking
to people around the league, you know, last year and

(55:46):
even previously, they conceded that they're not in competition to
the NFL because they're going to lose. They're going to
get swept and overwhelmingly defeated, and so they'll concede the fact.
But I think they also feel very strong that they
can still have a successful Christmas plate because of two reasons. One,
there are a lot of hardcore NBA fans that don't

(56:09):
watch the NFL, and two, there's a lot of NFL
fans that still like the NBA, and so they feel like,
you know, in a way because there's NFL games on TV,
that might entice those same viewers to then just to
keep the TV on for the other NBA games. But
I think the reality is what most matters is how

(56:30):
compelling the matchups are, how healthy those players are and
those games come Christmas Day, and how competitive they are
if you know, none of the star players are playing,
and if these are all blowouts, I think those are
larger factors into the declining ratings than anything because of
the NFL.

Speaker 2 (56:48):
Now, well said Dick, Chef taught me to root for
the story. And one thing that the NBA has done
Christmas Day is create a storyline behind each game. I
mean timber Wolves and Mavericks. It's a rematch of last
season's West Fine six or Celtics, that's going to be
a war. You gotta indeed, Maxi, Paul George. All of
a sudden they go into Boston defending champs, Lakers Warriors
say no more, you got Lebron and Steph and then

(57:10):
listen the final game of the night, Denver Phoenix. All right,
that'll be It should be an entertaining game. One last question,
I've got to ask it because, with all due respect,
Lebron said something in this past week that made my
teeth itch Mark. You're in the building, honestly, how many
more years do you think Lebron will play? Realistically? And

(57:32):
let me just qualify the question by saying this. He
said something during the Olympics when someone said something about
it and retirement, and Lebron says, no, people don't ask
me about it that much because for some reason to
think I'm going to play ten more years. No, Lebron,
that's not it. They don't want to ask you the
question because you're going to get some long winded words.
Salid in all the BS answer, that's completely inscrutable. Because

(57:56):
you have the Bobby Knight syndrome. You realize that someday
you're going to miss the spotlight a hell of a
lot more in the spotlight misses you. I wouldn't be
surprised if he plays ten more years, but I'm the
wrong guy to ask what's reality?

Speaker 7 (58:09):
Mark Well. For a while now, we've always said father
times on the feat of yet Lebron keeps delaying it
the last ten years. Now, I will say this, he's
still playing at an all star caliber level, but he's
not the same player as he was before. He's not
He can play defense when he cares to, but he

(58:29):
often takes plays off defensively, and in fairness, that shouldn't
be his MO because that's Anthony Davis's job. But I
think offensively, he still has the complete package as far
as you know, finishing at the rim, having a really good,
versatile scoring and passing game. But even though he finishes
at the rim, he's not as athletic as he was before.

(58:49):
But you know, I think at this stage, I mean,
he's playing with house money because it's unprecedented that he's
still playing at this level. Now to your question how
many years is he's still playing, I think that this
is his final contract. So you know, he signed a
two year deal, so he'll play two more seasons, call
it a career, and then enjoy the farewell tour. So

(59:09):
I think with that, the only finality that we have
right now is that Lebron played his last Olympics. And
now we'll see do the Lakers have what it takes
to try to find, you know, some roster that can
give him a fighting chance to win one last championship.

Speaker 2 (59:26):
All right, Mark, good stuff is always buddy, Enjoy your
week ahead. We'll see what the news brings us this
upcoming week in the NBA. Appreciate you event Mark macdein
and Medina Magic every Saturday night, twelve minunight on The
Bernie Fratter Show. Coming up fun with numbers Man. Do
I hope Russell Wilson is starting Week two for the
Steelers at Denver. There's a specific reason why. I'll tell you.

(59:46):
I think you'll get a kick out of it. By

from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio tyrack dot com studios.
Keep it locked right here. You're listening to the Bernie

(01:00:28):
Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Hi, right back on
the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Coming up after
Kevin's update the chef. Maybe the craziest story I've ever
heard coming out of a college campus, certainly maybe the
craziest story I've ever heard coming out of the Notre

(01:00:50):
Dame campus, and then includes mantiteo. This is crazier than that.
But I'll tell you what's also crazy. Root for Russell
Wilson to be the starter in Pittsburgh and root for
the fact that Russell Wilson is the starter week two
when the Steelers visit Denver. Why it would be remarkable

(01:01:11):
Russell Wilson, if that were the case, is the starting
quarterback week two in Denver will become the first player
in the history of the National Football League to play
against his former team while the former team is covering
almost ninety percent of his salary. Yes, remember the Steelers
got Russell Wilson on a song. Denver is paying eighty

(01:01:33):
seven percent of his salary essentially to compete against him
week two. If that's not a storyline Pittsburgh, Denver, in Denver,
Russell Wilson's starting quarterback market calendar. Wow, wouldn't that be something?
If Russell Wilson goes in there beats his former team
while Denver is paying eighty seven percent of his salary

(01:01:54):
to compete against their former QB who they couldn't wait
to get rid of. Just saying, I like story ankles
coming up this notre day and thing. You gotta hear
it to believe it. It's true, and we'll get the
crew involved as well. But first go back to a guy,
the chef, Kevin Wyre with the latest Yeah Bernie.

Speaker 9 (01:02:12):
Major League Baseball. We are in the dog days of August,
so we're really seeing those pen of races take shape.
The Dodgers, though they were real games, they lost to
the Cardinals on Saturday, five to two. The Padres getting
back in the win Callum against the Rockies, winning an
eight three so San Diego now just two games back
of La for the top spot in the NL West.
The Diamondbacks unable to take advantage of the Dodgers loss,

(01:02:35):
so there's still three games back. They lost the Rays
six to one. The American League Central is tightening up.
The Brewers beat the Guardians two to one, the Twins
picking up a game in the standings as they take
down the Rangers five too, so it's a two game
lead for Cleveland in the AL Central. I Elsewhere in
Major League Baseball, the Mariners sinking like a stone. Five

(01:02:59):
games now they have lost in a row, including a
seven to two defeat to the Pirates. The Astros getting
a win against the White Sox sixty to one, so
Houston now up four games on the Mariners. In that
was a tight al Wes It's now starting to widen
a little bit as Houston really picking up steam here
late in the season. Athletics shut out the Giants to nothing.

(01:03:20):
The Orioles over The Orioles fall to the Red Sox
five to one, but the Yankees also losing. The Tigers
shut them out for nothing. The Yankees held to just
four hits. So the American League. He still has the
Yankees on top by one game over Baltimore in the NFL.
Caleb Williams getting his first preseason touchdown. It was a

(01:03:41):
running one, a seven yard run. He was six for
thirteen for seventy five yards passing overall in the day,
just a sixty four point six rating, but the Bears
do beat the Bengals twenty seven to three. It was
a struggle for the Steelers passing game on Saturday, just
one hundred and thirteen yards passing combined by Justin Fields
and Russell Wilson, as the Steelers only muster up three points.

(01:04:03):
The Bills do beat them nine to three. Daniel Jones
struggles coming off as torn acl comes in plays with
the Giants and throws two interceptions as the Texans do
win it twenty eight to ten. Back to you, Bernie.

Speaker 2 (01:04:18):
All right, chef, worm up those vocal cords, buddy, all right.
I believe this was originally reported by Pat forty one.
To give them credit. It turns out that Notre Dame
is suspending their men's swimming program for a minimum of
one year after an investigation showed that boy a broad

(01:04:42):
based gambling situation that clearly violated NCAA rules and their
ad Notre Dame's ad P Pavakua basically issued a statement saying,
this is quote a deeply embedded team culture dismissive of
Notre Dame standards for student athletes. You're referring to the
suspension of the program because apparently the players were gambling.

(01:05:06):
I'll get to the details on that. They've got a
mess to clean up. Imagine you're on that swimming team.
You are stuck. You want to get your Notre Dame education,
but if you want to swim, it won't be this year.
So if you want to transfer. Apparently athletes that want
to transfer, including incoming freshmen, they have to do so

(01:05:30):
before classes begin in August twenty seventh, which is what
just ten days from now. Apparently the women's team is
not part of this just the men's team, and apparently
the head coach and their staff were not disciplined because
the reviews found out they just didn't know about any
of this. They were not aware of the scope, they

(01:05:51):
were not aware of the extent of what was happening.
And what did happen. Well, apparently the Notre Dame men's
swimming team essentially they they put together their own sports
book for the purpose of wagering on their own swimmer performances.
And they, you know, I don't know all the details,

(01:06:14):
but apparently more people were involved than not and they based,
you know, they based they place bets on their own
performances like for instance, you know, swimmers times or everything.
You have certain races and you have times, just like
in track and field, and you could bet over runners.
And apparently it was it was, it was widespread. Now

(01:06:39):
I live in Las Vegas and I've been doing this
a long time. I have never seen in any sports
book anything on college swimming on the betting board. I've
never seen a book, a sports book made book on
college swimming, especially when it has to do with taking
wagers on over runners for you know, betting times like
the one hundred meters, will it be over a minute,
twenty eight or under whatever the case may be. Look,

(01:07:03):
there has apparently been widespread campus gambling issues throughout history,
and the NCAA has modified some of its penalties and
their sanctions, and you know, we don't at this point.
I don't know about what the eligibility issues for any
Notre Dame swimmer who was involved in this. You know,

(01:07:26):
might that follow them, should they have to go to
other schools. But the nca does have guidelines, and again
I don't know the details of the investigation, but if
you wager two hundred dollars or less, you know that's
a problem. I think what happens is you get read
the Riot Act and you have to take a bunch

(01:07:47):
of classes or something like that, and maybe you kind
of get off. But if you bet between two hundred
and five hundred, you are suspended for I think ten
percent of your season and you lose some eligibility and
you still have to get to the prevention education. When
you bet over five hundred, you lose twenty percent of
your sieging that season, eligibility when you bet over eight hundred.
I don't know how they came up with these numbers.
Now you lose thirty percent of your season eligibility. So

(01:08:09):
what if you have you know, twelve meets, you miss
four from whatever the case may be. And if you
bet more than eight hundred, look you can get you know, permanently,
you can be made permanently ineligible and all that. Look,
this is a far reaching oddball story. The story angle
for me is that aid involves Notre Dame b and

(01:08:30):
involves swimming. Okay, we saw the situation with the Alabama
coach in college baseball. We've seen it in college football.
Shaye and I went deep into the headache Smith's story,
the famous point guard for Arizona State that was shaving points.
I've never seen it in swimming, and I don't think
I've seen it at Notre Dame. I want to bring
in the crew because, as you can tell, I'm sort

(01:08:51):
of stammering around here. I'm incredulous to hear about this.
I just am, Shay, have you heard about this story
and now that you have what you know, what, like,
what's your need your reaction to this?

Speaker 10 (01:09:02):
Yeah?

Speaker 11 (01:09:02):
I mean honestly, so this reminded me of when the
Chinese doping case was exposed. For like, against Team USA
and all that, and like I think it was it
was swimming. One was like twenty three Chinese swimmers or
something like that tested positive for like a man drug
at the Tokyo Olympics.

Speaker 4 (01:09:20):
So it's like it's something that's not.

Speaker 11 (01:09:22):
Unheard of, but within the college realm, it's definitely something
that I haven't seen before.

Speaker 2 (01:09:28):
Like, think about the shite not to cut you off,
which I just did. They all got together and say, hey,
let's create our own little sports book here, and we
can bet whether or not we go over under our times.
I mean, go ahead.

Speaker 4 (01:09:38):
Yeah, So I was gonna say it's some. It's some.

Speaker 11 (01:09:40):
Obviously we've seen trying like people trying to cheat it,
but this is something that's completely different, and it's something
that I've never seen in the realm of probably just
football and basketball, like that's that's only where you really
see it. I mean, that's where we only really talk
about it. But the fact that it's opening up to
these different sports, I mean, who knows. We could be

(01:10:01):
seeing it in tennis, we could be seeing it in soccer,
We could be seeing it in swimming now, So it's
like any sport can do it, you know, like That's
kind of what I've been thinking. Like everyone thinks, oh,
like an NFL player is betting on himself or an
NFL player is betting against himself. Of course that's bad,
but no one really thinks of these other athletes because anyone, anyone,

(01:10:21):
and everyone can get nil now, and like anyone and
everyone can now have the same situations to where a
swimmer can make a lot of money doing the same
things and at the same school that let's say, not
necessarily the same amount that an NFL or a football
player would make at that school, but they're making the money.
So it's it's what I'm gonna see. What I think

(01:10:43):
will come out of this is a lot more investigations
within you.

Speaker 2 (01:10:46):
And let's take it a step further. Notre Dame, which
is the really kind of the paragon of integrity. Yeah,
they have a small enrollment, it's very difficult to get
into that school. That what it does, it speaks to
the fact that what don't we really know what the
hell is.

Speaker 4 (01:11:00):
Going on out there exactly exactly?

Speaker 11 (01:11:03):
And then I think we're going to be seeing a
lot more of this, just not from Notre Dame and
not just from swimming. I think we're going to be
seeing a lot more stories like this. Just expect people
getting exposed investigations into things we've never seen before. Because
things are getting put on the map, we're able to
see things a lot easier. I think with NIO this
like put all of these sports on the map, and
now everyone sees what's going on.

Speaker 4 (01:11:25):
And I think that's one of the things that not.

Speaker 11 (01:11:27):
A lot of people realized would happen. But I definitely
think in the next year, two years, three years, we're
going to be seeing a lot of situations like this
that we never really did see before.

Speaker 9 (01:11:39):
Chef your thoughts, Well, this is not surprising at all.
You best believe that this is probably going on at
several other schools and several other athletic programs and they
just haven't been caught yet. With the prevalence of sports
betting becoming more widespread, I mean it should be expected
that more people are going to be tempted, especially since
they have the ability to directly out affect the outcomes

(01:12:01):
of certain events and being able to cash out on it.
It's something that you are going to see. I agree
with Shaye one and I think the only way you're
really gonna put a stop to this is introducing criminal
penalties for athletes to directly impact the outcome of a
performance for the sake of a wager, because you've got
a lot of people's money on the line, and at

(01:12:21):
that point it becomes a fraudulent outcome if they do
something to manipulate it. And short of that, I mean
banning them does a little bit, but you're going to
keep seeing it happen, and you're really gonna have to
up the penalties, I think on some of these participants
in order to see it slow down, because right now
it's just too tempting. There's too much money to be

(01:12:43):
made by participating in schemes like this. So I think
that barring anything, barring the increase in penalties, whether they
be criminal, whether they be civil, whether they be punitive
at the sports the whatever level the sports governor as.

Speaker 2 (01:13:00):
Them there, I think you're onto something. You're not going
to make some penalties a hell of a lot more
severe because there maybe just isn't enough of a deterrent
factor because according to these NCAA rules, if they were
betting less than two hundred in terms of what the
NCAA is going to do, not necessarily that severe. Now
the school itself self discipline. They're the one that checked

(01:13:21):
on the swimming program. So a lot of these guys
are kind of a man without a country. Now, we
saw this in baseball last year with the Alabama situation.
The coach ended up getting fired. You guys know about
that story. We've seen it in college basketball going back
sixty years, et cetera, et cetera. Now swimming and Notre Dame,
that's to me that creates the story angle. Mark Ramsey,
your thoughts.

Speaker 12 (01:13:41):
What I heard about this story on Two Pros and
a Cup of Joe. I just understood it as the
swimmers had competition between themselves, right, and they and one
person just wanted to challenge their other partner, and there
was just between themselves about betting. So I'm thinking that

(01:14:02):
an idea turned into something bigger because you know, competition
and winning money against one another. And I guess that
got out and so that became something I guess bad
for them. But the idea of competition between one another,
the teammates, and now you add in betting of all kinds,

(01:14:26):
that just makes it a little bit more poisonous because
now it turns into this big deal.

Speaker 13 (01:14:32):
Now we have to have an.

Speaker 12 (01:14:33):
Investigation because teammates wanted to challenge each other and make
bets about it, and now it's become a big problem,
and now it needs to do a band aid to
fix it.

Speaker 2 (01:14:43):
Well, here's the deal. It may have started out innocuous
the way you describe, I don't know the backstory, but
I know where it has ended up. And where has
ended up is that it's enough of an ordeal that
the school has shut down the entire program for a year.
So this is not something small. And again because it's

(01:15:04):
Notre Dame, because it's an off sport like swimming, it
raises the question what else is going on out there
that we don't know about? You know what we do
know about? If you pay your quarterback and making one
of the highest paid quarterbacks, that may be a cautionary tale,
a word of the lies, dak. If you get paid,

(01:15:25):
the odds are you're not gonna win a Super Bowl.
You're not gonna win win anyway. But I'm going to
share I had some fun with numbers on Russell Wilson
a minute ago. I'm gonna share with you some more
fun with numbers. By the way, coming up top of
the hour, we resume our NFL you know, with division previews,

(01:15:46):
so we'll get into the AFC. We completed the NFC
last week. I'll give you my thoughts on the AFC
West and AFC South. I'm Bernie Fraddle. We're company line
from the Las Veigas Fox Sports Radio at diirect dot
com studios. Keep it locked, you're listening to the Bernie
Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. We're back on the
Bernie Frattle Show Fox Sports Radio here, coming to you
live from the Tara dot Com studios here in Las Vegas.

(01:16:10):
We are really just getting started us so much to
get to top of the hour. We're gonna preview the
AFC East and the AFC North. Then I want to
remind folks also that if you miss any if tonight's show,
shortly after the show, our podcast will be going up.
Be sure to check out the podcast. Just search Fox
Sports Radio wherever you get your podcasts. Be sure to follow,

(01:16:31):
rate and review the podcast. Again, just search Fox Sports
Radio wherever you get your podcasts, and you'll see the
show posted right after we get off the air. Shape
we'll be taking care of that, by the way, for
what it's Worth. This is really going to be the
year of the quarterback, not just because of all the

(01:16:54):
new quarterbacks coming into the league and the hype surrounding quarterbacks.
And it's kind of a sad situation with JJ McCarthy,
he really was moving up the ranks. But Aaron Rodgers
in New York and Josh Allen in Buffalo and two
in Miami. You know, Joe Burrow back in Cincinnati, Deshaun
Watson back in Cleveland. What's Lamar Jackson going to do?

(01:17:17):
Not to doobt my mind. Russell Wilson will win the
job in Pittsford. Teams are so relying on the quarterbacks
more so than ever. And you know what's insane? What
are the seven highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL have
in common? The most recent guy to get the bag
was fifty three point one million a year. He's only
behind Trevor Lawrence in fifty five million a year and
Joe Burrow at fifty five million a year. Jared goff

(01:17:40):
Well deserved though, fifty three million a year. Justin Herbert
and I hope his planner fact shatus is okay, he
didn't play Saturday night, But did you notice he was
not in the walking boot. Not in the Walking Boot.
Raiders open up against the Chargers Week one. I would
hate to see the Chargers and their inaugural season to

(01:18:00):
be navigated, with all due respect, the Eastern Stick without
Justin Herbert. I would not like to see that again.
Lamar Jackson the sixty paid quarterback overall fifty two million in.
Jalen Hurts is fifty one million now. Jalen Hurts has
been to a super Bowl. Jored Goff has been to
a Super Bowl. Joe Burrow has been to a Super Bowl.
You know what the seven highest paid quarterbacks in the

(01:18:22):
NFL have combined, or check that have in common, They've
combined for zero Super Bowl rings. So had a caller
last night in the mind that hour, a good caller
by the way, good duty says, you know, money can
buy about anything. No one can't tell that to the
Yankees and Dodgers. So that to a lot of people.
And you can't buy a quarterback that will guarantee get

(01:18:43):
you into the Super Bowl. Pator Mahomes is thirteenth overall.
Tom Brady used to take less. There you have it,
be careful what you wish for. You pay your quarterback
a lot of money. It guarantees nothing except it's going
to eat up a ton of your salary cap. And
that's what's going to happen. When you know when the
Cowboys paid, he'll eat up sixty million dollars of the
salary cap and they'll be also rams just like they were.

(01:19:05):
Keep it locked. You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show.
I'm Fox Sports Radio. Yup, that's right, you heard the man.
The Bernie Fraddle Show keeps rolling right along. My name
is Bernie Fraddle. We are coming to your line from
the tyrat dot com studios here in Las Vegas, Fox
Sports Radio. Tyrat dot com will help you get there
an unmatched selection, fast free shipping for your road answer

(01:19:27):
to protection at over ten thousand recommend it installers, tyraq
dot com the way tire buying should be. Two weeks ago,
we previewed the NFC East and the NFC North. I've
got the Eagles winning the East and it's a toss
up between the Packers and Lions. Are both going to
be very good this year. NFC South. I like the
Falcons and I think they'll do it by only going

(01:19:49):
nine to eight. In the NFC West no way, I'm
picking against the forty nine ers, although I think the
Rams would be very competitive. So let's dive into the
AFC tonight. We'll do the AFC East and the AFC
the North. All right, everybody take your spots ready, camera action.
Aaron Rodgers is in camp. He looks sensational. You heard

(01:20:10):
my buddy Doug Anderson last night. Prominent trainer chiropractor, works
with Olympians, works with college athletes, NFL athletes. He believes
very strongly that Aaron Rodgers will not only do well,
he'll be okay during the season. Drew from historical precedent
if any Testaverdi came back from an ACA or check
out an Achilles at age thirty eight, played six more years,

(01:20:32):
played Elias forty four. Dan Marino came back from one
was All Pro the following year. So Rogers is not
reinventing the wheel. The roster, the Jets roster on paper,
on paper, is arguably any good as good as any
in the league. That's a fact. Well maybe it's not
a fact, but it's it's it's a well informed statement

(01:20:57):
based on the talent that's on that roster. The defense
is a top five unit, the past two seasons, they
haven't had offensive support. You had that defense had offensive support.
The Jets are as you heard Jared Smith say, probably
a eleven win team. I think that's true. The Jets

(01:21:17):
might be the NFL's best defense on paper. All right,
I think the Jets are going to win the AFC East.
I'm gonna go out on them and say that defense
is important. If Rogers stays healthy, and the probability is
he should, things can come together.

Speaker 14 (01:21:34):
Now.

Speaker 2 (01:21:35):
They have a tough schedule. There are gonna be some
speed bumps, and I know there could be somebody told
your shows if they're only like four and three after
the first seven weeks. But I think when the dust
settles in New Year's they're an eleven to twelve win
team as long as Rogers stays healthy. Right, the season
was hyped last year. We know what happened. You got
to put that behind you. After four snaps, Buffalo has

(01:21:58):
been the division champs in twenty twenty two and twenty three.
You can't tell me they're not diminished by salary cap adjustments.
They are back to Jets. Given the supporting cast around
Aaron Rodgers, including a bolstered line, they bring in Mike
Williams and Malachi Corley. Rogers is gonna have guys to
throw the ball to. Could he be an MVP for

(01:22:21):
the fifth time? Well, I think the Jets win the division.
He might it wouldn't it be something. Wouldn't it be
something if somehow they lock horns against Green Ban and
he wins. Well, you get the picture. The Jets have
a tough schedule. They have six prime time dates. They
got to go to Brazil Week one on a Friday
against Philadelphia, so they got some speed bumps. But again,

(01:22:45):
they might lose five six games. But in that division,
eleven wins is gonna do it? Now. I think the
only other team that can win double digits is Buffalo.
They won seven in their final nine games last season,
both losses by three points, including their heartbreaker home against
the Chiefs. That cannot beat the Chiefs. So the old
Joe Casey Stegel once said, teams lose to the Yankees

(01:23:06):
because they get stuck staring at the pinstripes. I don't
know what it is, man, Chief's got their number, Okay,
Joe Brady's your offensive coordinator. Stefan Diggs was not a
major contributor of that hot finish, and he dropped the
deep ball in the playoff game. Step Look, you may
not like hearing this. Stephen Diggs is good written, So
I'm not saying he's not a good player. Come on

(01:23:27):
with a pain in the ass. He did it in Minnesota,
and he did it in Buffalo, and he'll do it
in his new home too. Prove me wrong, don't tell me.
Show me not saying he's not a good player. But
you saw Josh Allen's answer, which was very measured, very political,
and very shrewd. They don't miss him. He's a good player, though,

(01:23:48):
but they're not gonna miss him. They're gonna have to
carry on without him. You got Gabe Davis and a
few other key players, but they also have key players
that couldn't afford to keep. And I think, you know,
Buffalo might start a little rough. They have a favorable
schedule the last half. And I would say this, you

(01:24:11):
win the division five years in a row with a
much better roster or four years in a row. Well,
they win at a fifty ye in a row. No,
I don't think they are, but I think they'll win
ten games. I think the Jets are gonna win eleven.
So those are my thoughts the Miami Dolphins. Look, there's
a lot to like about Miami. I like Mike McDaniel,
I like I love Tyreek Hill, I love.

Speaker 8 (01:24:36):
I like too.

Speaker 2 (01:24:36):
I've always been a to a fan of going back
to Alabama. I really believe that. But they I feel
like the Dolphins are guilty, not to the degree Matt
Millen was in Detroit of building the team on the periphery.
You have to build an NFL roster from the inside out.

(01:24:57):
It's all blocking and tackling and everything else's details. I
don't care what offense you run. So if you are
if you subscribe to the theory, and I do that,
if football team should be built from the inside out
because games are one of the trenches, then the Miami
Dolphins should raise eyebrows. There should be concerns because you've

(01:25:18):
got Christian Wilkins, Robert Hunt, Connor Williams. They were not resigned,
and remember they faded late in the season. Football is
a game of attrition both of Mike McDaniel's seasons, including
in the playoffs, So you can't be encouraged by the
fact that starting Thanksgiving for the remainder of the season.

(01:25:40):
The Dolphins in their final six games have to play
four playoff teams and three of them are on the road,
and you got to play the Jets twice. That might
be their comeuppance. I feel like the Dolphins maybe a
nine to eight team. They might even be an eight
to nineteen. So I got the Jets winning eleven games,
Buffalo winning ten, Miami winning game nine, which leaves us

(01:26:01):
with the New England Patriots. Yes, this is a team
that will forever be in the shadows of Robert Kraft,
Tom Brady, Bill Belichick's just there's been a sea change,
There's been an ord chart change, There's been a quarterback change.
You've got a rookie head coach in Gerrod Mao, You've
got a rookie quarterback in Drake May. Don't judge them

(01:26:24):
on this upcoming season because I think they're on their
way to win in three or four games. Just the
way it is. The roster is not great. They only
won four games under Bill Belichick's final season and they
were a playoff team what the year before. So look,
I think it's gonna be a bit of time before
New England breaks back into the win column, even though
maybe there's a light at the end of the tunnel,

(01:26:45):
maybe they get another number one pick in the twenty
twenty five draft. But there you have it. The AFC East.
That's the way I see it. It's speculative, and it's
predicated on Aaron Rodgers staying healthy, but elected juts to
win it. I'm gonna go out on that limb. Buffalo
behind them, Miami behind them, and New England behind them.
Coming up, we will do the NFC North. And I
gotta tell you, this was a really tough sort of

(01:27:11):
a homework assignment to navigate because you have proud franchises
three or four that have a standard of being Super
Bowl bounder in the Super Bowl. And then there's Cleveland.
And Cleveland won eleven games and they almost won the
division last year, and in spite of the fact they
had a ton of injuries and they bring a guy
off the sofa and Joe Flacco to save them. Different

(01:27:33):
story in Cleveland this year and they open up against Dallas.
I can't wait. I really mean him. This is going
to be a fun division to break down. I'm talking
about the AFC North. We'll do that coming up next.

(01:29:03):
The AFC East, I'm gonna go on on a limb.
The Jets are gonna win it. The win eleven games,
Buffalo will win ten, Miami maybe eight to nine, nine
and eight in New England. Bringing up the rear, the
AFC North Palm for Pound could be the toughest division
in the National Football League. First of all, I've talked

(01:29:24):
about this in previous shows since two thousand and two
and eighteen to the last twenty. Check that in twenty.
In the last twenty two years, there have been a
team that's gone from worse to first. We've even had
one season more. Two teams did it Cincinnati. The Cincinnati
Bengals for me, are the by far the most likely
worst to first candidate. I think the Bengals are an

(01:29:45):
eleven win team. Let's just keep fingers crossed that Joe
Burrow can lose this jinx right, I don't know if
someone put the maloka. I'm the guy keeps getting hurt man.
He's a star and Cincinnati's not the same without them,
still pretty good, but they won the division in twenty
one and twenty two with them, And the numbers tell

(01:30:07):
us the Bengals this is this can only help now.
I know you say these things in the National Football
League because it's a gauntlet. There are no weeks off
and not in my opinion, I covered the Lions for
ten years, and I would just say this every week
is you earn your victories in the National Football League.
But by the numbers and the way that they calibrate

(01:30:27):
these things and calculate these things. The Bengals have the
easiest schedule in their division. The other three teams have
the three hardest dockets in the league, and they've also
got hurdles. But the Bengals also got hurdles. They lose
their offensive coordinator, Brian Callahan. They lose Joe Mixon, they
lose Tyler Boyd were he was an unhappy camper as

(01:30:50):
was a wide receiver, you know, as the second target.
But but T Higgins, Trey Henderson, Joe Burrow, these are
the three cornerstones of the operation. They're back, but they're back,
you know, and Joe Burrow has an injury to his
passing risk. Look, I think players like Zach Moss, Gino Stone.

(01:31:16):
They draft a receiver in the third round named Jermaine Burton.
He's a very talented guy. They could be very underappreciated newcomers.
And I think that the Bengals also are going to
benefit from the proverbial fast start again, assuming Joe Burrow
is healthy. They open up with the Patriots, they play
the Washington Commanders, they played the Panthers. Those teams combined

(01:31:40):
for the three worst records in twenty twenty three, and
Cincinnati gets all of them in September. I think the
Bengals are an eleven win team. I think they win
the AFC North. We'll see again. It's speculative and it's
predicated on health, which is becoming the theme and the cliche.
Speaking of health, well, Deshaun Watson has yet to do

(01:32:03):
anything to live up to the contract, coming off a
shoulder injury. But in spite of the fact that Cleveland
did not have their signal caller that they paid dearly for,
they still won eleven games. Cleveland won eleven games, nearly
won the division in twenty twenty three. They had a
ton of injuries, including again most notably Deshaun Watson. By

(01:32:25):
the way, Nick Chubb, he tores acl he missed most
of the season, and I think that if both those
guys come back healthy, Cleveland is going to be a bear. However,
it's imperative that Deshaun Watson finds the sea legs in
this offense, all right, and you know, you bring in
a guy in Jerry Judy, who on paper as all

(01:32:48):
talented in the world. He'll be their number two target.
And again, let's not forget Cleveland had the top ranked
defense in twenty twenty three when it comes to yards allowed,
two hundred seventeen yards a game. That's big time. To
put that in perspective, remember the great Legion of Doom
defense in Seattle that got to the Super Bowl back

(01:33:08):
to back years. They allowed two hundred and fourteen yards
a game. So Cleveland was in that in that range, right,
you got the top ranked defense, you got your quarterback back,
you got Nick Chuck back. However, you know, the Browns
can't afford a slow start, all right, because if they

(01:33:29):
start slow, they're asking for trouble because their final five
games of the season they're playing all playoff teams. And
I just mentioned that by the numbers, the Bengals have
the easiest schedule, the Browns, by the numbers, have the
toughest schedule. Well, how do we arrive at that conclusion
or how do the researchers arrive at that conclusion? Because

(01:33:51):
their opponents have accumulative five forty seven winning percentage from
last year, So these things have a way of rearing
their head. Still, I think the Browns could be a
ten win team and a playoff team. I don't think
they win the division. I think Cincinnati does, but it's
gonna be hotly contested right behind them. Also, I think

(01:34:13):
these guys are a ten win team. So you know,
you can flip flop whether or not Baltimore finished his
second or Cleveland finish Wait whatever, all right, I think
Baltimore is a ten win team. I don't think they
win the division. I think Cincinnati does. But there's a
lot of optimism in Baltimore and they added Derrick Henry
and look, this is a team that just needed to

(01:34:34):
win one more game to get to the Super Bowl.
They couldn't beat Kansas City at home. You saw it
with your own eyes. They had a number one playoff
seed last season, Baltimore. And look does Derrick Henry and
his thirty year old body and has taken a lot
of hits in the last twelve years, how does he

(01:34:56):
mention with Lamar Jackson. I'm gonna I'm and by the way,
look Lamar Jackson, it takes a lot of heat. I'm
a defender of Lamar Jackson. To me, he's nowhere near
dak Prescott territory. He's got to have a couple more
stinkers in the playoffs to get in that conversation. But
I like Lamar Jackson a lot. I always have. I
like him at Louisville. I don't think he gets enough
credit as a pocket passer. I think he's better than
people realize. He's also a two time league MVP, right,

(01:35:18):
So you add Derrick Henry. That's got to help. It's
got to I like Derrick Henry. But you also have
to juxtapose that with the fact that the Ravens lost
a lot of players, particularly on defense and the offensive line,
and they lost their offensive coordinator McDonald. Check that their

(01:35:40):
defensive coordinator, former Michigan guy Mike McDonald. He's at a
Seattle he's the head coach now, by the way again,
back to that schedule conversation. The Ravens they faced four
twenty twenty three division winners in their first seven games. Okay,
that's not so easy. So there is a possibility the

(01:36:05):
Ravens could win ten games and miss the postseason field
because they can lose the strength to victory battle to Cleveland.
That's just the way these things shake out. So Baltimore
could win ten games not make the playoffs. Or maybe
they make a liar out of me and they make
the playoffs. Maybe they win eleven games. Maybe I'm all

(01:36:25):
wet and they beat Cincinnati. I'm not so sure. I like,
I really like the Cincinnati team. I will tell you
we have a great storyline developing, and it's obviously coming
out of the AFCU West, and I'm going to preview
the AFC West next week. The Kansas City Teafts are
looking to be the first team in the Super Bowl

(01:36:46):
era to three peat, and they can do it now
if you trivia buffs. The Green Bay Packers won the
first two Super Bowls, super Bowl one in nineteen sixty
seven and Super Bowl two in nineteen sixty eight. They
beat the Chiefs in Super Bowl one thirty five to ten.
They beat the Raiders in Super Bowl two thirty three
to fourteen, but in nineteen sixty six, before the Super

(01:37:09):
Bowl era officially launched, the Packers won the NFL Championship
in sixty six, so they actually did three pat Well,
the Chiefs are bucking to three pete and I gotta
tell you they're gonna again barring injury. And let's hope
keep our fingers crossed. We want to see players healthy.
I think they got a hell of a chance to

(01:37:29):
do it. But you know the team that I think
can really pee on their parade the Cincinnati Bengals.

Speaker 6 (01:37:35):
You know it.

Speaker 2 (01:37:35):
The Bengals know it, and the Chiefs know it. That's
the one team that just does not fear them. Buffalo
can't get over the hump. Baltimore wouldn't get over the hump.
I don't think Cleveland could could do it. I don't
think Pittsburgh can do it. I don't know about the Jets.
They're kind of a wild card right the AFC South
could the Texans? Could the Colts. I think the team

(01:38:00):
that could cause the Chiefs to stumble the Cincinnati. That's
why I like them to win the AFT North. Finally,
Mike Tomlin. Yeah, I believe it or not. Time flies.
Tomlin is heading into his eighteenth season, and Mike Tomlin
has never had a losing season. And I think on paper,

(01:38:21):
the Steelers are going to be better because I am
actually a Russell Wilson defender. I know he's a creeper
and he says these weird things and he seems very disingenuous. Look,
they ran him out of Seattle, but give the manage
due you could have won two Super Bowls one to
one through twenty six touchdown passes in Denver against state interceptions.

(01:38:42):
I don't think he messed with Sean Payton all that much.
They just didn't. Tomlin is a shrewd operator, and Russell
Wilson is a guy that has gas in the tank.
If you end up with Justin Fields, all bets are off.
But I think that Pittsburgh with their culture, with Mike Tomlin,
with Russell Wilson all right, and a bunch of new

(01:39:04):
rookies that are very talented. The only question mark is
you got a new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, and he's
as you can see. And again the preseason, you heard
my opening monologue means nothing but Listen, the Steelers got
about twenty two days to get this new offense installed

(01:39:24):
and get it in a position where you can score
some points. Because Pittsburgh does play hard nosed football. That
is their culture, that is their mantra, that is their persona.
Always has been, always will be. But it doesn't hurt
if you score points too. And even back in the
day when Pittsburgh was winning four Super Bowls with Terry Bradshaw,
you had Lin Swan and John Stalworth. Pittsburgh has had

(01:39:45):
offensive skilled guys over the years, even when they won
the Super Bowl in two thousand and nine beating Arizona.
So they got to get this new offense straightened out
and you know, keep Russell Wilson healthy. And you know,
I would say the Steelers are another team that has
to come out of the gate relatively quickly. They have

(01:40:08):
a bye week nine, but you know, I don't know
how the schedule makers end up this way. I'm not
that smart. But after Week nine, in a seven week span,
the Steelers have to go on the road five times. Now,
Pittsburgh has been finished in last place since two thousand
and two. Now, uh, there's a first time for everything,

(01:40:31):
all right. Actually, let's put it this way. There was
a divisional realignment in two thousand and two, and since then,
Pittsburgh has not finished in last place. Could this be
the first year where an entire division finishes above five hundred? Yeah.
I think Pittsburgh can go nine and eight. I think

(01:40:52):
Baltimore can go ten and seven, Cleveland ten and seven.
I like, since ninety eleven and six, they're gonna play
each other twice, they're gonna beat each other up. But
what does that mean? Doesn't mean Pittsburgh gould make the playoffs?
So those are my thoughts. I like, I like Cincinnati
do win the AFC North. I like to just do
in the AFC East. Next week we'll get into the
a FC South and the FC West. You do your
best research, you give your best shot, you see what happens,

(01:41:16):
and then reality happens when the season starts. If you
don't believe me, just ask Aaron Rodgers. So look, let's
let it happen. By the way, I I I want
to read a tweet here coming up, but first let's
go to our guy, Kevin. Kevin wired the chef yes

(01:41:36):
with another performance.

Speaker 10 (01:41:38):
Sometimes it all.

Speaker 8 (01:41:39):
In love, man, You take a peel that way, but
help you change your life and needn't know your brains.

Speaker 10 (01:41:44):
Don't you think you can't get any badtime?

Speaker 2 (01:41:47):
But then that plods away no matter what it does.

Speaker 1 (01:41:50):
The state is strong.

Speaker 8 (01:41:51):
And then you wouldn't I don't call you, didn't your
dumb don't It can't just start like a top rule weird.
Don't be open and never.

Speaker 4 (01:42:03):
Let poon tang come between.

Speaker 2 (01:42:04):
You and your frame. Chef, you know you once again
you even added some production in the background.

Speaker 10 (01:42:15):
Oh yeah, had to get that full performance in there.

Speaker 8 (01:42:18):
You know.

Speaker 9 (01:42:19):
That's my highlight of every week on this show, Bernie.
So happy to be there and do it again. And
uh we got some baseball and NFL preseason football on
this Saturday. And in Major League Baseball, those Pennant races
really tightening up as the Dodgers lead in the nail
nl wes now just two games. The Dodgers followed the
Cardinals five to two on Saturday, the Padres picking up

(01:42:42):
a game by beating the Rockies eight three, so San
Diego two back of La Arizona. Failing to do that, however,
they did lose to the Rays six to one, but
the Dimonbacks still red hot coming out of the All
Star Break and the AL Central. The Guardians get beaten
by the Brewers two to he won the Twins taking
advantage with a five to two win against the Rangers,

(01:43:04):
so Cleveland's lead in the AL Central now to games.
Both the Orioles and the Yankees lose on Saturday. The
Tigers blake in New York for nothing as the Bronx
Bombers limited to just four hits, and the Orioles do
lose to the Red Sox five to one. So the
Yankees still one game up on Baltimore, a top of

(01:43:25):
the American League East, and in the American League West,
it's starting to widen a little bit. It seemed like
it was the Mariners division to lose, but the Astros
have really come charging forward, and the Mariners have been
really sputtering of late. They've now lost five games in
a row. Pittsburgh beats him on Saturday seven to two,
the Astros widening their lead in the AL West with

(01:43:48):
a six to one win against the White Sox. Houston's
lead now at four games. NFL preseason football Bears over
the Bengals twenty seven to three, Caleb Williams getting his
first preseason touchdown was a seven yard scamper as he
went six to thirteen for seventy five yards.

Speaker 10 (01:44:05):
Overall.

Speaker 9 (01:44:05):
Passing was not a good day for either Pittsburgh quarterback
in their nine three loss against the Bills, as justin
fields ninety two yards passing Russell Wilson just forty seven
yards so will combine one hundred and thirteen passing yards
for the Pittsburgh Steelers was just not a good day

(01:44:26):
at all offensively for them, and Daniel Jones also struggling
as he returns from his ACL injury. Giants fall the
Texans twenty eight to ten, but Jones throwing at two interceptions,
one of them being returned for a touchdown as he
really looking rusty there for New York. Elsewhere in the preseason,
Ravens over the Falcons thirteen twelve, Lions with the Chiefs

(01:44:47):
twenty four to twenty three, Vikings over the Browns twenty
seven to twelve, Titans Edge of Sea hot sixteen fifteen,
coltover the Cardinals twenty one thirteen, Dolphins meet the Commanders
thirteen to six, Jets over the Panthers fifteen to twelve.
Ms beat their crosstown rival the Chargers thirteen to nine,
Jaguars over the Buccaneers twenty seven, and the Cowboys beat
the Raiders twenty seven.

Speaker 10 (01:45:07):
It's well, Beck, you Bertie.

Speaker 2 (01:45:09):
All right, chef good stuff as always, and keep those
vocal cords warmed up. In twenty six minutes. You know
we'll all get involved in shay. What kind of brand
new food you want to read? A tweet from Joe
Bittz love your radio program. I'm not sure where you
get some of your information from you. So the Jets
are going to Brazil to play Philadelphia. That is not

(01:45:31):
the case. I did say that. I plead guilty. I
know better. I know Green Bay is playing I was
in Green Bay all day Wednesday, had full access to Lambellfield.
Somehow I managed to conflate Aaron Rodgers and the Green
Bay Packers and the Jets thinking I know, damn well,

(01:45:53):
They're not going to Brazil to play the Eagles. The
Green Bay Packers are going to play the Eagles, and
they're all fired up about it in Green Bay. They're
really looking forward to the game. First ever NFL game
in Brazil. Appreciate you listening to Joe and I will
now and then full pa. By the way, Joe, for
what it's worth, where you get your information from, never
in your sentence in a preposition. Couldn't resist that good stuff? Joe,

(01:46:15):
appreciate you listening, all right. I want to get the
crew involved in this because look, just last year, going
to the Butpapa Ball twenty twenty three season, Major League
Baseball instituted some of the most extreme set of rule
changes since the inception of the Damn Game. They put
in a pitch clock, they eliminated the shift, They made
the bases bigger, they placed the limit on pickoff throws.

(01:46:39):
And the reality is there's been a difference. Games are shorter,
there's more action on the bass paths. Fans are still
getting used to some of these adjustments. For the most part.
You go to a park now you see the clock
winding down, you see the game move at a quicker pace. Okay, Okay,
I think it's had a positive effect. Okay, However, Rob
Manfred eight done. They're not enamored with pitchers, you know,

(01:47:03):
pitching three or four innings and being done and pitch counts,
and they want more starting pitchers to spend more time
on them out. They want more starting pitchers going deeper
into games like it used to be back in the day.
And I don't know if you've heard what Randy Johnson
said to Paul's schemes this past week, but it was
pretty interesting. He's like, you know, Paul, and I will

(01:47:23):
share this maybe later in the show or maybe next
week if I have time to get to it. But
the gist of it was, Paul, if you want to
have the career that you really want to have and
deserve to have, cut the crap. A lot of these
times I watch you, I look at your pitch count.
You were able to go one more inning. All right,
You're leading the game three nothing in the fifth and
they pull you and they put another guy in. He

(01:47:44):
gives up four runs and you lose a chance to win.
And that's not good. So one of the things Rob
Manfred has talked about, he wants to increase the amount
of action. He wants to crease the amount of the
starting pitchers staying in the game. The question is would
it lead to more injuries or fewer injuries? Would pictures

(01:48:05):
pitch differently to survive? And would they do this? Can
you really can you really institute something like this? I
wouldn't call it draconian, but I certainly would call it
pretty forceful. The primary goal of what this minimum innings
rule that has been banged about, meaning this new rule, Okay,

(01:48:28):
will it be a be all end all, will it
be a panasy, We don't know, but it would require
starting pitchers to go at least six innings every time
they take to the mound, unless, of course, there were
injuries or something, or there are provisos. And of course
one of the Royal starters Seth Lugo's poke up he said,
we all want to go at least six blah blah blah.

(01:48:49):
All right, I don't know if he was I don't
know if he was joking or what. Probably not so,
But the primary goal of this minimum innings rule would
be to restore the dignity of the starting pitcher, to
restore the prestige of the starting pitcher, And I think
I think it might increase viewership. Fans would know that

(01:49:10):
you're tuning into a game knowing that the starter is
going to be on the mound for the majority of
the game, and in reality, the way it goes, starting
pitchers typically unlikely to reach that goal. Ten years ago,
just ten years ago, starting pitchers averaged just under six

(01:49:34):
innings to start five point nine to seven. According to
ESPN Stats and Information, the figure has dropped down to
right at five about and now four in TAA. So look,
major League Baseball at least acknowledges that if you put
this rule in, it's not going to be so simple
forcing every start to pitch at least six innings. You're

(01:49:55):
going to have to have exceptions. All right. Here are
some of the exceptions. The starter would be a allowed
to leave early if he's already thrown hundred pitches, if
you've given up four or more runs, or of course,
if you get injured, right, let's bring him the crew.
I just there's a weirdness to this to me that
feels unnatural. Shay, let's start with you. I'm sure you've

(01:50:19):
heard about this minimum innings rule that they're talking about. Okay,
there's nowhere near there's proponents of it, there's resistance, it's
not official, but they're talking about it, and I'm telling you,
I think it's got a fifty to fifty chance happening.

Speaker 1 (01:50:33):
Do you like it or not?

Speaker 11 (01:50:34):
I don't think I like it, because, to be honest,
I don't I want to see Paul Skeen's playing for
the long run. I don't care if he says for
more than four innings, Like I want to see him
playing for ten twelve years, even though I'm a Dodger fan, Like,
I just want to see greatness for as long as
I can. So, for instance, Kershaw has been playing for
so long, and he's able to play for so long

(01:50:54):
and still be somewhat competitive because that rule is in effect.
If he's not having a good game or he's injury prone,
we're gonna take him out immediately, you know what I mean.

Speaker 2 (01:51:03):
And they made that proviso. So not having a good
game is like four innings or four runs or more,
But go ahead, continue with your point.

Speaker 11 (01:51:10):
Yeah, well exactly four runs are more. But still it's
like I just I don't care to see them for
a long Like, for instance, if you're gonna keep him
in the game, he's gonna do good, Like if it's
four runs. It just doesn't make sense to me, Like
it's just a rule that I feel like shouldn't be there.

Speaker 2 (01:51:27):
It's like, well, it's not that it's they're nowhere near
enforcing it yet they're at the experimental stage or having conversations,
they would like to implement this rule, and their belief
is it restores the prestige of the starting pitcher.

Speaker 11 (01:51:40):
So I'm looking at the rules right now, it's so, yeah,
he gives up four and more earned runs, he throws
one hundred pitches, or he gets injured. And I mean
in six innings throwing one hundred pitches. I don't know
how many times we've seen that. If you're giving up
four and more earned runs within six innings most of
the time, if you're doing that in the first three innings,

(01:52:00):
you're not going to be in the game.

Speaker 2 (01:52:02):
True.

Speaker 11 (01:52:02):
So it's like it's like this rule doesn't even need
to be there, Like, of course, if he gets injured,
he's gonna get pulled. Like I think it's just something
that they're just like, there's no point in putting it
in there. In my opinion, it just doesn't really make sense.

Speaker 2 (01:52:13):
Well, their point again, this is there in lines of
discussion exactly where I wanted to bring it up on
the air. There is a point. It's just not our point, okay,
it's it's there is a rationale based on the powers
to be in the major leagues. Uh, And they're I
think they're feeling saucy, they're feeling their oats a little
bit because, let's face it, some of these rule changes

(01:52:36):
they put in the last couple of years with the
pitch clock, would you agree they've worked?

Speaker 11 (01:52:40):
Yeah, they've sped up games. It's I definitely agree they've worked.
But again, like I think this is a little different
because every pitcher is different. With the pitch clock, it's
it's it's easy because it doesn't affect it affects everyone
the same way.

Speaker 2 (01:52:54):
But can I share it one quick thing? Yeah, of course,
of course, and we're going to continue this coming up.
I saw the Dodgers played twice uh in Milwaukee this
week Tuesday nights. Gavin ston't pitch a hell of a game.
He was terrific, struck out six, didn't walk anybody along,
one urn run, He threw eighty six pitches. He didn't
start the sixth inning? Why not? Why couldn't you have

(01:53:16):
brought him out? They bring in, they bring in, they
bring in this reliever. Uh, oh god, who was it?
It was landed neck. Yeah, he evenly gives up three
hits in a run. So couldn't he have start? Couldn't
he have pitched one more aning I was.

Speaker 11 (01:53:31):
I was really yelling at Dave Roberts after that one.
That was something I don't I didn't understand either.

Speaker 6 (01:53:36):
But.

Speaker 11 (01:53:37):
It's again, it should be the man. It shouldn't be
the MLB that is doing this. It should be the
manager that keeps them in. That's it's like I just
and I'm not a manager, and I'm nowhere near to
being a manager, So I don't know what he was
doing and what Dave Roberts was thinking.

Speaker 4 (01:53:54):
Obviously, that's what they always do.

Speaker 2 (01:53:55):
It's based it's based out of fear and it's based
out of caution. Ironically, Colin Ray, who's a damn good pitcher,
he got lit that night. He actually pitched the full
six innings, threw one hundred pitches, gave up ten hits
in seven or runs, and I know probably Pat Murphy
just said, hell with it, we're not going to burn
up innings. We'll go Johnny Holstaff, let's get six out

(01:54:16):
of them and we'll move on. And by the way,
the Brewers won the final two games of the streets.
We're going to continue this conversation coming up. I want
the crew to talk about this. You bring up a
lot of good points, Shay, it feels forced and it
feels unnatural, and therein lies the issue. I'm Bernie Fraddawer
comedy line from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio Diirec dot
Com Studios. Keep it locked. You're listening to the Bernie
Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Now we're back in

(01:54:38):
the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Coming up ten minutes.
The Dan Sensation sweeping the nation? What kind of brand
new fool? You followed by what my name? But I
want to finish this discussion. Uh, Shay, go finish your
point please, And I want to get I want to
get Mark and the chef Toway and as well. Final
thoughts on this potential rule where starters in Major League

(01:55:00):
Baseball have to go six innings.

Speaker 11 (01:55:02):
Yeah, I just think it's gonna be unfair for the
starters that throw a hundred. I mean, Gavin, you said
to yourself, Gavin Stone could have gone six last time,
but I don't think he has a pitch that goes
over one hundred. But with people like Paul Skins, I mean,
there's a reason why the Pirates are so safe. It's
because he's chucking the ball almost every time. And that's
why this is something that's not necessarily I can compare
it to the pitch clock because everyone has to deal
with the pitchclock the same way, But with this this

(01:55:24):
is completely different, because I mean, is Paul Skin's just
gonna throw softer like to be able to reach that
six inning?

Speaker 2 (01:55:33):
See that. That's a good point. Shake that came up.
Do pitchers now alter their approach just to comply with
this rule? I want to make sure you get the
other guys in, But excellent point, shit, chef, what do
you got?

Speaker 1 (01:55:47):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (01:55:48):
I don't believe in having a hard rule that says
they have to go six innings. I do believe that
they should incentivize it. Maybe having that DH hook rule
where the DH leaves the game where the team loses
the DH once they pull their starter or another one
would be limiting the amount of pictures on a roster,
so teams really really have to think about pulling a
pitcher before five or six innings. So those are things

(01:56:09):
I would support, but as Shay mentioned, forcing pictures to
go at least six innings when maybe they're not built
for going that long to begin with, if they're just
fireballers meant to go four or five I mean, what
type of effect does that have on them?

Speaker 10 (01:56:28):
Is it going to force them to alter their approach?

Speaker 9 (01:56:31):
And I think we might see a reckoning with how
starting pitchers approach how they pitch on the mound if
we do see that, and I think it messes too
much with the strategy. I think teams should have the
ability to determine who who should pitch for them at
what point? I mean, the three out the three batter
minimum is pushing it even for me, But anything beyond that,

(01:56:52):
I think it should be up to the teams to
determine the best courts of strategy.

Speaker 2 (01:56:57):
Yeah, I can't disagree, Mark, you got the last word.

Speaker 1 (01:57:00):
Power does it be?

Speaker 12 (01:57:00):
Have finally figured out that there's not going to be
any more twenty game winner pitchers and then that will
successfully get a picture into the Hall of Fame.

Speaker 13 (01:57:11):
There's not going to be that kind of career anymore.

Speaker 12 (01:57:13):
So now they figured out all we need to change
what we do with the picture because those days are over.

Speaker 2 (01:57:20):
Holy Bolgoney, I love that take. That is so good
that you remember you have to complete five innings to
be the picture of a record. You have to complete,
so getting into the six makes it better. We don't
have complete games anymore. My god, I will keep an eye.
I've been studying this and coming up in what my name.
We're gonna have a couple of interesting stats you get,

(01:57:40):
you guys, will I will, I guarantee you will raise
an eyebrow. I think baseball is feeling it, so it's
a little bit as well. They instituted all these changes,
the pitch clock, you know, the bases being bigger, the
trips to the mound, the pickoff move, and they have work.
The game is faster, the pace is, the games are

(01:58:01):
shorter and there's more action, which is what they want.
But you know, you guys all bring up good points.
You know you got to leave it to the team.
Can you really dictate that does a picture alter his
approach to comply with the rules? Should the teams be
in charged? And last, but not least, Baseball's concerned about

(01:58:21):
the historical numerical perspective, right, and so maybe they're artificially
trying to manipulate that for legacies for pictures. I don't
know if it's gonna work. I hope they don't pass it.
I don't like it. It's just something it doesn't sit
right with me. For a multitude of reasons coming up.
What kind of brand new fool of you? And what
my name? Keep it locked right here? You're listening to

(01:58:43):
the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Yep, that's right,
you heard the man, The Bernie Fradle Show keeps for
rolling right along. My name is Bernie Frattle. We are
coming your line from the tyract dot com studios here
in Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio. Tyrect dot com will
help you get there an unmatched selection, fast free shipping,
free road aster protection, and over ten thousand recommended installers

(01:59:06):
tyreq dot com the way tied buying. This should be well,
we have come to that juncture, that time of the week,
the time of the show. Do you know what? You
love it? You can't live without it, you see, because
as Yogi Berra once said, you can observe a lot
by watching, which is exactly what we do from seed
to Oily Sea, all around the globe. Because every day
people engage in behaviors that are weird, goofy. They cause

(01:59:30):
you to well raise an eyebrow. Oftentimes they're innocuous, they're stupid,
they're silly, they're harmless. But many times they're far more dangerous,
oftentimes illegal, sometimes can land you in jail. But anyway
you slice it, anyway you characterize it, any way you
describe it, these behaviors, they always always leave us scratching
our head and asking ourselves, what kind of brand new

(01:59:53):
fool are you?

Speaker 1 (02:00:00):
What kind of brand new fool are you?

Speaker 2 (02:00:03):
So this one is really an interesting story. I will
tell you that this is the first brand new fool
I've ever done that actually spans four years, four years
work with me. Just this past week, a woman was
sentenced to nine years in prison for stealing wait for it,

(02:00:25):
chicken wings. She stole eleven thousand cases of chicken wings
that were valued at one point five million dollars. I said,
this goes back four years. How did this happen? We'll
say hello to Verra Laddell, sixty eight year old Vera Lddell. Now,
I debated whether I wanted to use this for my

(02:00:45):
brand new fool this week, but it was so crazy
that I had to, And so I don't want to
personally attack this individual. But man o, man oh man,
this story is just crazy. She pleaded guilty to fly
theft this last week for stealing more than eleven thousand
cases of chicken wings valued at a million and a half,
Which I just said, what the hell happened here? Well,

(02:01:09):
this whole story takes us back during COVID, and it
takes us to Illinois, where the Cook County State's Attorney's
office started investigating this a couple of years ago. So
quote unquote, the massive fraud began at the height of
the COVID, during a time where students were not allowed
to be physically president school. According to The New York

(02:01:30):
Times given credit for this, even though children were learning remotely,
the school district continued to provide meals for the students
that families could pick up, but the stolen food was
never provided to the students. So the guilty plea was
part of a deal the prosecutor's office reached, and of
course miss Liddell a great dealer. Remorse, sure, sure, okay,

(02:01:51):
all right, but here's the deal. From July twenty twenty
through February twenty twenty two, she engaged in quote pervasive
and a pervasive embezzlement scheme by placing hundreds of unauthorized
orders for food items, particularly chicken wings, with the schools districts.
The school districts made provider of food Gordon Food Service.

(02:02:14):
The orders were also placed separately from the district's regular orders,
and Gordon Food Services thinking they were legitimate purchases. Will
they build the district They didn't know. The district then
paid the invoices, but during a mid year audit two
years ago, the district's business manager discovered the food service
department had already surpassed as annual budget by three hundred

(02:02:35):
thousand dollars and it was only in January. So the
investigation continued and there was surveillance video that showed that
miss Ladell actually used the district's cargo vans also to
pick up the cases of chicken wings, so the food
was never brought to the school, never provided to the students,
and she was arrested in January twenty twenty three. And

(02:02:58):
now it has come full circle and she's facing eleven
years in prison a million and a half in chicken wings. Yes,
in an eyeball side note, Chris Jones, the star defensive
tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs, allegedly posted on social
media he offered to pay a million and a half.

(02:03:18):
He offered to pay back restitution a million and a
half dollars so that miss Adell could have a freedom
because her attorney said she could not pay any restitution because, oh,
by the way, she's got a gambling problem. Also, Chris
Jones said, hey, I'll pay for the wings she stole.
Let's get her free. Unfortunately, it just doesn't work that way.
If they would all due respect to this sixty eight

(02:03:40):
year old woman, man O man o, man o, man o, man,
mister Adell, what kind of brand new fool?

Speaker 6 (02:03:46):
Are you.

Speaker 2 (02:03:49):
All right? Shay back in the forth, my man, What
do you got for us?

Speaker 11 (02:03:52):
It's gonna be back Bernie. And we're going to Thailand
for this one. I don't think i've been there yet.
I know Florida's kind of been away in the summer.

Speaker 2 (02:04:03):
Drill go ahead, yeah, but yeah.

Speaker 11 (02:04:05):
So a Russian tourist who allegedly tried to have intercourse
with a cow was gored by the animals hold on,
I just.

Speaker 2 (02:04:16):
You're on fire, Go go go, and.

Speaker 4 (02:04:18):
Had to be rescued by Thai police.

Speaker 11 (02:04:21):
Avengi Kuvshinov twenty six is said to have stripped off
and settled over to a male bowl before turning his
attention to a female bowl tied to a wooden fence
in a field in Surrats Thani. I'm hoping I'm saying
that right, which is in southern Thailand.

Speaker 14 (02:04:37):
Uh.

Speaker 11 (02:04:37):
This past week, the man on holiday allegedly tried to
mount the cow, only for her to react violently, obviously
pinning him to the ground and goring him.

Speaker 1 (02:04:48):
Wow.

Speaker 11 (02:04:49):
Concerned locals, who suspected the Russian was up to no
good when they saw him prowling naked, had already called police.
They also heard his cries for help while being attacked
and stood next to him as they waited for officers
to arrive. Police of paramedics arrived to the scene and
carry the Russian away on a stretcher. He was taken
to Banaderum Hospital be treated for wounds on his bottom

(02:05:11):
and abrasions all over his body. Police Lieutenant Thong Chey Chaikit,
I'm really hoping I'm saying these names right of bon
Na Doin police station said they receive reports of a
foreign man with an altercation with a cow.

Speaker 4 (02:05:26):
Obviously it was way more than an altercation.

Speaker 11 (02:05:29):
Luckily, the rescue team arrived to save him, but he
kept walking and speaking Russian without any meaning.

Speaker 4 (02:05:36):
He had no spell of alcohol in his book.

Speaker 11 (02:05:37):
Car and when he was sent to the hospital because
he was injured on his bottom, he went crazy and
doctors would not admit him. So now he's detained at
the police station. This just leads me to go on,
and this is probably one of the craziest ones I've
ever done. Let's go back to his name real quick,
because oh my god, Evgenie Kushinov, what kind of brand

(02:06:00):
new fool are you?

Speaker 2 (02:06:02):
And you know that's that's a great one. I mean,
it doesn't even matter whether or not you got the
names right. You had me a cow no mata, you
come out of the gate.

Speaker 11 (02:06:11):
Oh this even I mean, it was a little hard
to find stories this this week for some reason.

Speaker 4 (02:06:16):
But when I found it, oh man, this was definitely
it's top ten.

Speaker 2 (02:06:20):
Right, Yeah, you'll have to come back. Well, we'll we'll quote,
we'll melk that one for all.

Speaker 10 (02:06:25):
Do what I did there?

Speaker 2 (02:06:27):
All right? All right, good one, good one. Say, chef,
can you top that?

Speaker 9 (02:06:33):
I don't think I can. I mean, that's probably one
of the best ones. I am bird in this segment
going back to what since I've been here almost two years,
so I think Shay is gonna be hard to be
topped here. But we go to otter Tail County, Minnesota,
where a woman and her boyfriend on the way to
couple's therapy and she decided that couple therapy wasn't enough.

(02:06:58):
She ran him over after he decided that on the
way to that that they should break up so love.
Veronica Rolling Gast was arrested for second degree assault, criminal
vehicular operation, bodily harm, gross negligence, and domestic assault according
to an affidavit, because on the way to couple's therapy,

(02:07:19):
her boyfriend decided that, okay, we should break up and
she got mad told him to get out. He did,
and as he was going in front of her car
to the sidewalk, she decided to step on the gas pedal.
He went on all over the hood, broke her windshield,
and she insisted that he was the windshield dam which

(02:07:39):
was caused by him punching the glass and not by
his body weight. But so far the evidence showed that no,
she intentionally stepped on the gas pedal to hit him,
and she now will find herself facing several charges.

Speaker 10 (02:07:53):
So I can see why he broke up with her
at that point.

Speaker 9 (02:07:57):
Veronica Rolling Gast of otter Tail Canty, Minnesota. What kind
of brand new fool are you?

Speaker 6 (02:08:03):
Wow?

Speaker 2 (02:08:03):
Wow? Minnesota, Thailand and Chicago. Two of the three involved
violence and sado masochism. That's what I'm talking about, guys.
A little something some for the effort. Nicely done. That'll
conclude another rising condition of what kind of brand new
fool are you? Which allows us to now segway into
our second favorite bit. What my name? All right? I,

(02:08:24):
as a Major League baseball player, now own the following record.
I'm the fastest to three hundred career home runs in
terms of the shortest number of games. Shay Moganngar, What
my name?

Speaker 4 (02:08:35):
It's the captain? Judge?

Speaker 2 (02:08:38):
You got it, Aaron Judge. Oh, he got it, He
got it, Aaron Judge. Nicely done? All right, guys. College
football is just around the corner. Week zero starts next week,
and so preseason rankings are out. In the history of
college football, seven times my teams were listed as the

(02:08:59):
preseason number one, the most of any coach in college
football history. The chef Kevin Wyer, What my name?

Speaker 10 (02:09:05):
We'll get the guest Nick Saban, Not Nick.

Speaker 2 (02:09:08):
Saban, not Nick Saban. But it's an excellent guest. Seven
times my college football teams were ranked preseason number one,
the most of any coach in history. Mark Ramsey, what
my name.

Speaker 13 (02:09:19):
Bear Bryant?

Speaker 2 (02:09:21):
Nicely done? It is, in fact Paul bear Bryant seven times,
Saban I think came in at like four. All right,
I got a kick out of this one. I just
found this out the other day, actually, while I was
in Milwaukee. My initials are MLB. I'm a prominent Major

(02:09:41):
League baseball player, and my mom says, making my initials
MLB were intentional. Shaye Mogangar, what my name?

Speaker 4 (02:09:49):
Okay, so it starts with an M. Nicky, No, it
starts with an M.

Speaker 2 (02:09:58):
I know it's one of those. It's a tongue twister.
My initials are MLB. I'm a prominent Major League baseball player.
My mom says, making my initials that way were intentional.
The chef, what my name?

Speaker 10 (02:10:10):
Give me my boy? Mooky wooky bets Oh, I hate that.

Speaker 2 (02:10:15):
I know that. Hey, by the way, chef, your deal
from Minnesota or Brian McCarry just tweeted in that relationship
here in Minnesota was only a year long, as was
reported by the news here. Just brilliant, great show. As always,
thanks for listening, Brian. All right, good good stuff, man,
Good to see this brand new fool stuff's getting out there.
Oh are you guys go three for three one year only? Yeah?

(02:10:43):
All right. As a quarterback in college, I led the
SEC in passing last year, Mark Ramsey, what my name
is it?

Speaker 13 (02:10:54):
Penix?

Speaker 2 (02:10:55):
Not Michael Penix of course, not a bad guess, but
Panis did play for Washington as a quarterback. I was
the SEC's leading passer last year. Uh, jam Oggar what
my name?

Speaker 4 (02:11:08):
It wasn't Jayden?

Speaker 2 (02:11:10):
Right, Jane Daniels was not Jayden Daniels. He did not
lead the SEC in passing as a quarterback. I led
the SEC in passing last season. Chef what my name?

Speaker 10 (02:11:19):
Hmmm, gonna have to SEC quarterback?

Speaker 6 (02:11:22):
Uh?

Speaker 10 (02:11:24):
Was Jake from at Georgia?

Speaker 2 (02:11:26):
What it was? I think it was? Back? Well, at
one point Jake fromm was at Georgia. It is, in fact,
Carson Beck. Yeah, yeah, my bad, Carson Beck.

Speaker 6 (02:11:38):
There.

Speaker 2 (02:11:40):
All right? Moving on. Uh, I'm very surprised by that
the fact that the Texas Rangers have gone completely off
a cliff so last season, Bruce Bochie became the second
major league manager in history to win World Series in
both leagues, but I was the first one to do it.
Mark ram See what my name?

Speaker 13 (02:12:04):
Oh Sparky Anderson.

Speaker 2 (02:12:06):
God, you guys are on fire tonight.

Speaker 4 (02:12:08):
Mark is on fire right now?

Speaker 2 (02:12:12):
All right? You got you got Bear Bryant, you got Sparky.

Speaker 10 (02:12:15):
Wait, Squarky won with the Tigers. Who else did he
win with?

Speaker 2 (02:12:19):
Sparky was Cincinnati Red's big red machine?

Speaker 4 (02:12:21):
Oh yeah, I didn't even know.

Speaker 2 (02:12:23):
Yeah, that's where he really made his bones. He won.
And remember they got to the World Series and lost
to Baltimore. Then they got and lost to Oakland. So
that night, that famous nineteen seventy five series that you
see every other damn day on ESPN, Carlton fisket Norman,
the Reds won that series. And then the Reds came
back and won. In seventy six, I swept the Yankees.
We won twice with the Cincinnati Reds. All right, we've

(02:12:46):
been talking about this. No one throws complete games anymore
in Major League Baseball, but since two thousand, since the
year two thousand, I still hold the Major League Baseball
record most complete games in the season with eleven. Shane
Ogngar what my name?

Speaker 4 (02:13:10):
Hmmm, James, you got it. Oh my god, wow, I
want to shields but.

Speaker 2 (02:13:21):
Absolutely and air for it.

Speaker 1 (02:13:24):
Oh, I got that.

Speaker 4 (02:13:25):
That would have been I generally have no idea.

Speaker 9 (02:13:26):
I could have listened one hundred pictures before I would
have guess a guy who gave up a home run
to Bartolo Cologne.

Speaker 2 (02:13:32):
Big sexy, Yeah, all.

Speaker 4 (02:13:34):
Right, big game, James, Dude, he was good, Yeah, he
was very.

Speaker 2 (02:13:38):
Let's do let's have fun with this one. Since twenty ten,
I still hold the Major League Baseball record for starting
pitchers of the most complete games in the season with
nine The chef, what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:13:52):
Since twenty ten to nine ten, I'm gonna guess Clayton Kershaw.

Speaker 2 (02:13:56):
Not Clayton Kershaw. Since twenty ten, I still hold the
Major League Baseball pitchers record for most complete games in
the season with nine, Mark.

Speaker 4 (02:14:06):
Ramsey with my name, I can't think of anybody, no problem.

Speaker 2 (02:14:12):
Since twenty ten, I still hold the Major League Baseball
pitchers record starting pitchers record for most complete games in
the season with a total of nine. Okay, yes, heay,
what my name?

Speaker 4 (02:14:22):
It can't be Royal Holiday?

Speaker 1 (02:14:25):
It is, in fact Royal Holidays.

Speaker 2 (02:14:29):
Yes cool, yeah, yeah, I'll never forget. I covered the Tigers.
I've had a credential with the Tigers since ninety four
and pretty much saw every home opener until I might
have missed one. I don't know.

Speaker 4 (02:14:47):
He passed in twenty seventeen, right, he did, and he
has that record.

Speaker 2 (02:14:51):
Wow, yeah, no one pitches complete game.

Speaker 9 (02:14:53):
Wait, we had one time tired in why like twenty
like fourteen or something like that. I mean he didn't
pitching the twenty ten Is that long?

Speaker 8 (02:14:59):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (02:15:00):
No, no, but yeah, but he Look, he was a
gamer man. I remember he would open up every year
for Toronto. I saw I think I saw him pitch
against attackers on opening day at least twice. He was nasty.
He was nasty. He was and remember he came from
where he really did, come from a different era. By
the time twenty fourteen year old around had been the
league probably fifteen years, right at least all right Among

(02:15:24):
active Major League Baseball players. Among active Major League Baseball players,
I've played more games in my career than any other player.
Mark Ramsey with my.

Speaker 13 (02:15:33):
Name active players played the most.

Speaker 4 (02:15:38):
Games.

Speaker 2 (02:15:39):
Among active players, I have played the most. I don't know,
I don't know, get no problem. Among active Major League
baseball players, I've played more games than anybody else in
Major League Baseball for a career. Seane Ogngar what my.

Speaker 4 (02:15:57):
Name pirates legend, Andrew McCutchen.

Speaker 2 (02:16:01):
You got it, it is, in fact, who's still in
the league.

Speaker 4 (02:16:04):
Yeah, I remember seeing him once at Tired Stadium.

Speaker 10 (02:16:07):
Wow, I always love touch.

Speaker 4 (02:16:09):
He's great.

Speaker 2 (02:16:10):
Man's he's back with him definitely.

Speaker 10 (02:16:12):
We played for the Giants.

Speaker 4 (02:16:13):
But is Freeman second.

Speaker 10 (02:16:14):
In that list?

Speaker 2 (02:16:15):
No way, right, I'd have to look it up. I'd
have to look it up, but I know he just
passed somebody this past week to to to achieve that
goal as Oh.

Speaker 4 (02:16:29):
But Joey Voto is not in the league anymore, right,
he's not.

Speaker 2 (02:16:34):
I think Joey No, I think Joey vottal's playing.

Speaker 4 (02:16:36):
But Joey Voto is number two?

Speaker 2 (02:16:38):
Okay, all right, last one, guys. So, in the history
of the National Football League in the Super Bowl era,
there have been eight NFL teams at one back to
back Super Bowls. Or let's put it this way, that's
not the right for terminology. There are eight occasions in
which an NFL team has won back to back Super Bowls.

(02:17:03):
But I'm the only head coach to have done it. Twice.
The chef what my name?

Speaker 9 (02:17:09):
Back to back Super Bowl is the only head coach
to do it twice, Bill Belichick.

Speaker 2 (02:17:19):
Not Bill Belichick. He did do it once H three
and OL four, but not twice. All right. In the
history of the National Football League, there have been eight
occasions where an NFL team has won back to back
Super Bowls. But I'm the coach. I'm the only coach
of a franchise that actually did that twice. Mark Ramsey

(02:17:40):
what my name?

Speaker 13 (02:17:43):
A coach of a franchise, He's done it twice.

Speaker 2 (02:17:46):
Done it twice, back to back twice.

Speaker 13 (02:17:51):
I was thinking of the Pittsburgh coach, Well.

Speaker 2 (02:17:54):
You're okay, can you give you a names? Oh God,
I should, I should give it to you, but I
would have, but I think we're almost like to forty
five seconds, so you might. Yeah, there you go. All right,
but good effort. Mark, you had a huge night tonight.
All Right, we'll see if Shay can bring it home.
The only coach in the history of the National Football

(02:18:14):
League then not only won back to back Super Bowls,
I'm the only coach to do it twice. Morganngar what
my name?

Speaker 11 (02:18:20):
I was lost until Mark said the Steelers. It's Chuck Nole.
I gotta give Mark.

Speaker 2 (02:18:27):
Team, team effort, guys, outstanding job tonight. Should we do
one more for a point?

Speaker 11 (02:18:32):
Why?

Speaker 2 (02:18:33):
How you guys are gonna like that? You guys should
get this one, okay, because it's a repeat one. But
it's so damn distinctive. All right. Everybody's raving about Caleb Williams,
and it should be everybody raved about Justin Williams, and
they shouldn't be, or they should when he was at
Ohio State, but not in the National Football League. However,
I still am the only Chicago Bears quarterback in the

(02:18:56):
last thirty five years to be named All Pro moggar
what my.

Speaker 4 (02:19:00):
Name in the last thirty five years to.

Speaker 2 (02:19:03):
Thirty five yearsamed All Pro?

Speaker 4 (02:19:07):
Not Jay Cutler?

Speaker 2 (02:19:08):
Right, not Jay Cutler. That's a good, good effort, And
the only Chicago Bears quarterback in the last thirty five
years to be named All Pro chef what my name?

Speaker 10 (02:19:20):
Jim Harbaugh played for the Bears. He did, But yeah,
it's not the end, not the answer, Okay.

Speaker 2 (02:19:24):
Harball was there in eighty seven. I believe they're they're abouts.
I don't know. Someone will hold it against me, all right,
Mark Ramsey, do.

Speaker 13 (02:19:31):
You have the answer to the question, is it Rex Grossman?

Speaker 2 (02:19:36):
Not Rex Grossman, although he did get him too Super
Bowl guys, it's Mitch Trubisky.

Speaker 10 (02:19:40):
He was all Pro.

Speaker 2 (02:19:42):
Yep?

Speaker 10 (02:19:44):
Wait, all Pro or Pro Bowl?

Speaker 2 (02:19:46):
That's did I did I screw this up?

Speaker 10 (02:19:47):
You may said all Pro?

Speaker 2 (02:19:49):
Yeah, then okay, shame on me. Give me a demerit.
But but he's still literally to get to the Pro Bowl. Yeah, okay,
that that's good enough for me. Coming up, Randy Johnson
had some choice words for Paul Skeens in a good way.
I'll share it. Coming up, I'm Bernie frattle. We are

(02:20:10):
coming to you live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports
Radio Tireck dot Com Studios. Give it lock listening to
the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. We're back
on the Bernie Fratterle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Pitching complete games.
Baseball's starting to become a conversation more in the forefront
the legend. Randy Johnson had some fox for Paul Skins

(02:20:33):
and I do not take this in the pejorative. I
really think Randy Johnson meant, well, here, let's give it
a listen.

Speaker 15 (02:20:40):
Basically, you just told them that You're a special pitcher.
Not too many pitchers come around like you. You're you know,
one in every twenty thirty years. And don't put limitations
on your soap, And don't let anybody else put limitations
on your soap because you'll then if you do, you're
never gonna know what kind of picture you could have been.

Speaker 2 (02:20:59):
With that good You could do a lot. Don't put
limitations on yourself. I don't excellent stuff. Shay, great job
pulling that sound down. At the end of the show.
I want to add an additional inflection because Randy Johnson
drew history into the conversation, and that's the thing I
think we need to start to pay attention to. All Right,

(02:21:20):
thirty five percent of the pitcher's got Tommy john surgery
that didn't exist fifty years ago. But guys like Nolan Ryan,
there's a lot of hard throwers that seem to make
it through the human body. Have we deteriorated? I don't think.
So We're going to dive into that coming up at
the very end of the show with the time we
have left. Coming up christ Properfet's World of Soccer.

Speaker 9 (02:21:39):
But first back to our guy, the chef, Kevin Wire
Major League Baseball. We are in the thick of the
Pennant races, and the Dodgers have been in command of
the NL West all season, but they're lead now down
to just two games, LA losing to the Saint Louis
Cardinals on Saturday five to two. The Padres picking up
a game with a win against They's eight three, so

(02:22:01):
San Diego two games behind LA. Arizona, however, aren't able
to take advantage of the Dodgers loss, the Diamondbacks losing
to the race six to one. So the d Backs,
as right hot as they are coming out of the
All Star Break, find themselves three games back in Los
Angeles in that NL West race. In the AL Central,
the Cleveland Guardians losing to the Brewers two to one.

(02:22:23):
The Twins able to take advantage as they get a
win against the Rangers five to two. Cleveland's lead in
the AL Central now too games. In the American League West,
it was the Mariners Division to lose. It looked like
much of the season, but the Astros have really charged
on strong and right now Seattle in a free fall.
They've lost five games in a row, including a seven

(02:22:43):
to two defeat too to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.
They are four and six in their last ten games,
Houston getting the win against the White Sox six to one,
so Houston's lead in the American League West now sits
at four games.

Speaker 10 (02:22:58):
Both the Yankees and.

Speaker 9 (02:22:59):
Orioles lose on Saturday, so New York still on top
of that division the AL East by one game. NFL
preseason football Caleb Williams. His first touchdown was a seven
yard run as the Bears beat the Bengals twenty seven
to three. Williams six to thirteen for seventy five yards.
On the afternoon, the Bills and Steelers. Pittsburgh really struggling

(02:23:21):
in the passing game one hundred and thirteen combined passing
yards from Justin Fields and Russell Wilson, as the Bills
do win it nine to three. Daniel Jones a struggle
as the Giants lose to the Houston Texans twenty eight ten.
Jones coming off that acl came in through two interceptions,
including a pick six back to you, Bernie.

Speaker 2 (02:23:43):
All right, chef, great job tonight. So there is a
lot of news this week in the world of soccer,
including the fact the United States have pulled the trigger
on a coach with a big time resume. That's here,
all about it.

Speaker 16 (02:23:55):
Chrispophett's World of Soccer, The greatest goals, the thrilling finishes,
the international drumo.

Speaker 14 (02:24:14):
It's all here in this report from the World of soccer.
Welcome back to clubs soccer. We missed you. Wait a minute,
didn't we just finish? Didn't this just happen? Did we
just finish international soccer? Yes, yes we did. It just
felt like yesterday we were at Paris for the twenty
twenty four Olympics. Not much for behind that was Copa

(02:24:34):
America and euro Championship twenty twenty four. And yet here
we are as Manchester United kicked off the Premier League
on Friday, La Liga got kicked off on Thursday, and
a whole slate of games on Saturday and Sunday.

Speaker 10 (02:24:48):
Including a massive match right out of the gate.

Speaker 14 (02:24:51):
Featuring Chelsea and Manchester City on Sunday eleven thirty am
Eastern Time. A real great one there. It's a little quick,
it's bewildering. It's part of a thing we've talked about, Bernie,
and that this is the longest season of soccer ever,
and more and more people worry about the burnout Earling Holland.

(02:25:14):
I know he's been kind of on and off with injuries,
but if he goes and plays for all of Manchester
City this year, his season will be about three hundred
and fifty four days long. Or take Julian Alvarez, the
man who moved over from City to at Leeddi Coo Madrid,
who was just who played not just Copa America but

(02:25:34):
was also on the Argentina Olympic team as well. He
had no time off and he's going right in there
with a brand new club at at Letiko in a
very competitive La Liga. This year it's a lot and
more and more issues crop up, and I think that
was very illustrated this week where a very big great

(02:25:58):
took Umbridge with one of those players now Luke Shaw.
I mentioned Manchester United a little bit ago. They picked
up a win over Fulham to get started on the
season and it looks like left back Luke Shaw will
be missing time. Eric ten Hagg giving the update that
due to a calf injury, Shaw has been ruled out
until September, putting pressure on the club as it really

(02:26:20):
looks to pick up some real big wins and tries
to really buy some respect back for itself in the
Premier League this season and it's brought in criticism to
see Luke Shaw out kind of once again. Really he's
kind of on and off injured quite a bit. But
longtime Red Devil hero Peter Schmichael took umbradge with all

(02:26:41):
of this and went on BBC five Live and talked,
you know about this issue. Luke Shaw hasn't played for
United since February and that he played in the Euros
and now he's injured again, and Schmichael says, quote, he's
so important, he's got experience, he's a top class left back.

Speaker 10 (02:26:59):
We pay him.

Speaker 14 (02:27:00):
He should be focusing and prioritizing Manchester United and not
his country. These are very very concerning words, I think
because again we've talked a little bit about this though
Bertie about that more and more as this season, as
the soccer season continues to expand gets bigger and bigger.
The conflict between country playing for your country, which is

(02:27:23):
a big part of soccer, is coming more into conflict
with playing for your club, and the clubs who pay
a lot of money to these players are taking more
and more Umbridge and want more and more say over
all of this, it might seem a little quaint to
American ears. After all, while we do have Team USA basketball,
there's always a understanding that the club comes first. The

(02:27:46):
World Baseball Classic is another great example when Edwin Diaz
got injured and it was very much so, not that
Edwin Diaz was bad for playing for Puerto Rico, but
that the whole World Baseball Classic was a mistake somehow
because the closes or for the Mets got hurt. First
off to Mets fans, crimea River. But it's still something
different to hear it in soccer, especially from Schmichael who

(02:28:09):
played for about fourteen years with Team Denmark one hundred
and twenty nine appearances. And I think that more than
anything that clubs should learn and understand that your game
benefits from and people come to watch the club game
partially and a lot of the times because of the
international game as well. These are two sides the same

(02:28:29):
coin and they have to be handled hand in hand.
I understand injuries happen and you get frustrated by it,
and you see guys who weren't playing for many months
for Manchester United then going to play for Team England.
I find this also kind of galling, and I found
the response gawlling. I should say, Bernie, because even though
this was directed to an English club, I saw a

(02:28:50):
lot of United fans agreeing with Schmichael. So clearly he's
onto something that resonates with fans that this is something
where the club should take press.

Speaker 10 (02:29:00):
But I think there is something magical to representing your country.

Speaker 14 (02:29:04):
I think it is something amazing to represent your country
and it is a high honor to do so, and
it should never just be dismissed just because as a
club says so, because at the end of the day,
that club will not be loyal to you if it
comes time for you as a player, for the rubber
to meet the road.

Speaker 10 (02:29:22):
Anyway, the club season's back.

Speaker 14 (02:29:24):
Hopefully we won't have a ton more of issues because
of how long the season has been, but something to
keep an eye on. We've been pounding on the table
a little bit here at the world of soccer that
the season is way too long. We just finished and
we're back here already, and expect this fatigue to be
a continuing storyline as we get going in European soccer.

(02:29:45):
Something I'd like to ask myself every year Bernie is
which is of the big four leagues of Europe La Liga, Siria,
Premier League, Bundesliga, which is the most fun to watch
in any given year. And I hate to say it
because as much as I that roost has been ruled
by Premier League for a very long time, I just

(02:30:06):
have to go with La Liga this year.

Speaker 10 (02:30:08):
I think when we look at the Premier.

Speaker 14 (02:30:10):
League, we always associate that league with a lot more
competition and thus makes it more viable. But it's been
really hard with Manchester City kind of running away with
the league every year now for quite some time.

Speaker 10 (02:30:22):
I know Arsenal's been getting close.

Speaker 14 (02:30:23):
Manchester United is really feeling itself and hoping to have
some good news this year.

Speaker 10 (02:30:29):
But besides that, I mean Liverpool's turning over a new coach.

Speaker 14 (02:30:34):
I have to go with Aliga because the talent influx
we've just seen, be it Julian Alvarez going to at Lettiico.
Madrid always been kind of the third spoke of the
top tier echelon of La Liga and sometimes claiming victory
for themselves, and I think the rivalry between Barcelona and
Real Madrid is kicking into high gear. Especially as Killian

(02:30:57):
and Bape settles in in Madrid with Real, It's going
to be fantastic.

Speaker 9 (02:31:03):
You know.

Speaker 14 (02:31:03):
Girona finished a very respectable third in the Spanish League
this year too, so I really am going to keep
an eye on Aliga and especially anytime there's an El
Classico on. It's just hard to ignore this league right now.
But that's not to say nothing about the Premier League.
We'll be talking about it plenty. On the world of
soccer moving forward, we should also talk about that. As

(02:31:24):
we said last week, we thought that the United States
will be moving in on Mauricio Poschettino as their new
head coach. Those rumors appear to be true. I give this, Bernie,
and you can put out your own grade if you wish.
I give this a very good, solid eight. I think
Budgettino is everything in the United States needs right now.
He is a coach who is renowned for his relationship

(02:31:45):
with players for a team that has had some fractures here,
that is absolutely massively important. He's someone very good at
developing talent, and once again, his style of coaching, this
pressing attack, high flying attack, is exactly what the United
States has their personnel for. And they like to play.

(02:32:06):
I really like the hire. He's probably got the best
resume out of any US coach higher so far. It's
interesting to see what's gonna happen with the Americans as
we now turn our attention on the international side towards
the twenty twenty six World Cup sometime away.

Speaker 10 (02:32:19):
But that's going to do it for US. Bernie, enjoy
soccer back.

Speaker 14 (02:32:23):
We'll have more previews for a lot of big name
clubs as the season goes gets started here and it's
gonna be a long one.

Speaker 1 (02:32:30):
We'll see you next time.

Speaker 2 (02:32:32):
So listen. I gave the United States an A for
their coaching higher, but it's a midterm grade. We're heading
into the World Cup in twenty to twenty six and
it'll be played on our soil, and for once it
would be nice to see the US be a factor.
I think the country would go nuts. The nineteen ninety
four World Cup. I was there in Detroit the Silverdome.

(02:32:54):
They opened up against Switzerland with a tie. You'd thought
we'dn't won the World Cup. Of course, that was an
Alexi Laws team but ended up doing nothing. So we'll
give our final grade after twenty twenty six. But This
is a big name guy with a big name resume
and maybe help Hope Springs eternal for US soccer. Coming up,
we wrap up the show, and I want to add

(02:33:15):
some additional inflection to what Randy Johnson told Paul Skeins
and what caused him to do that. We'll button that
up coming up next. I'm Bernie Fradder. We're company line
from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio, Tirack dot Com Studios.
Keep it locked you listening to the Bernie Frattle Show
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, we'll wrapping it up
on the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. We are
coming to you live the Tyrack dot Com Studios here

(02:33:38):
in Las Vegas. Before I go any further, I want
to thank my broadcast team back in Los Angeles. They've
been with me since eleven pm Pacific time on Saturday night.
Shay Movenguard, good to have you back in the fold.
Fine job pitch hitting tonight. Of course, the chef Kevin
wired on the updates and his baffel performance at a
one thirty Pacific time four Eastern and Mark Ramsey are

(02:34:01):
technical producer, turning all the dials, keeping us together. Great jobs,
and I especially great job guys on brand new full
and what my name you guys were in Fuego. Good
discussions as well on some of the variou subject matter.
I'll be back around these araways, by the way, next
Friday night, Friday, August twenty third, eleven PM Pacific Heavy, Heavy, heavy, heavy,

(02:34:24):
heavy college football, or in the eve of week zero
that will include a handful of games, including tenth rank
Florida State and Georgia Tech. Hey, it's college football. It's here,
by the way, we're also going to dive into I've
analyzed this. I think there are potentially sixteen teams that
can win the national championship in this new twelve team

(02:34:46):
playoff next year. And it actually is a formula that's
pretty darn good. It predicted Michigan with a fifty four
percent probability last year and Georgia with a seventy seven
percent probability of the year before having to do with
you know, five star recruits and a few other a
few other things. Well, fourteen team fall in that category. Secondly,

(02:35:09):
I'm gonna talk about the price of college football realignment.
What the real I mean, this is gonna be the
theme all these new conferences, right they're basically brand new.
A lot of realignments. It's not always worked out. I'm
not saying it's not. But for individual schools they've borne
the brunt. I'm gonna give you some history. You're gonna
maybe think twice about some of this. Although I am

(02:35:32):
not listen, I am not, you know, a kill joy
when it comes to the advancement and the progression of
the college game. Come on, we've come a long way
since nineteen eighty. You've got to evolve in this world.
We used to fight wars with a single shot rifle.
So onward and upboard. It's only gonna get bigger and better,
more TV, more stuff. But for some individual schools who've

(02:35:53):
changed conferences in the last thirty years, and I lived
and covered Big ten country for a long time, just
ask Nebraska, right, But that's the story for next Friday.
By the way, not for nothing. How about does UCLA
Bruins rack up those frequent flyer miles in twenty twenty four.
They're going to rack up twenty two thousand of them.
They got to go to Hawaii. That's almost three thousand

(02:36:14):
miles at LSU sixteen hundred, Penn State twenty two hundred
Rutgers twenty five and the oh boy, gass it up,
gass up the plane, all right? Why did Randy Johnson
tell us Paul Skeins what he did? Paul Skeins? He
saw Skeens pitch against the Arizona Diamondbacks last week. Skens
was pulled after one hundred pitches and five in the
third innings. Gave up only two earned runs in the

(02:36:36):
entire outing, but he got let down by the Byran's bullpen,
which cost him a win. And Randy Johnson said, if
you could have gone another inning, he might have gotten
that win because as soon as he came out, the
next guy gave up three runs. He's not wrong. I
saw that with Gavin Stone Tuesday night in Milwaukee when
they pulled him. Wasn't his fault. He still got to win.
But he said, Paul, the organization, they're gonna dictate what
you do. But if you want to have a real career,

(02:36:57):
you want to becoming the pitcher everybody thinks you're gonna be,
You're gonna have to have a lot to say what
you want to do. A lot of pitchers don't have
that to say, but you will if you speak up.
Because how special you are. I don't think Randy Johnson
wants to see Paul Skeins held back for the rest
of this year and even maybe next year, because he
wants to see Skeans be the pitcher he's truly capable

(02:37:17):
of being. Randy Johnson went on to say, look, you're
gonna have to go seven or eight innings. You're not
gonna hurt yourself. The game has gone It's been around
