Speaker 4 (00:24):
We're here to break it all down. Let's go.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
This is Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff, presented by
Bett Mga.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
No, we're live from your tailgame.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Here's Brian No, former Penn State All American, Rich Wrenberger
and Pixwives lead Betty analyst Jared Smith.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Oh, what is going on? Happy Saturday to you?

Speaker 2 (00:49):
And what do you know? Paul is back.

Speaker 5 (00:53):
Yeah, it is finally back, finally and we got a
ranked team to start this sauce pretend Florida State.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Huh. This guy's like.

Speaker 5 (01:03):
Ball, that's right, and you know what, you know, it's
I don't know if this is okay to do, but
product placement a little apple cinnamon this morning?

Speaker 3 (01:12):
Oh wow, it's great. Let's get freaking nuts over here.
Is serious?

Speaker 6 (01:19):
That guy means business when he busts out the apple cinnamon.
I don't know if anybody knows that, but that's a
big deal.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
It is.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
It's uh breakfasted champions.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
That's right.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
It is a top shelf type of day over here, guys.
But let's just dive right in Florida State, Georgia Tech
like Old Mills Lane. Let's get it off right in
Ireland here. It feels kind of weird that they're playing
behind the Irish's back, you know what I mean, Like
this feels like Notre Dame territory, does it not?

Speaker 3 (01:49):
It does a little bit.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:51):
I was talking about that this week, about how all
these professional sports leagues have taken their games international. NBA
for many many years, they've been trying to expand their borders.
They actually do what I described as NBA mission trips
to a variety of continents, bringing you know, basketball everywhere.

(02:13):
I mean, there's a huge basketball presence in Africa now
as a result of that, and Asia. You know, Yao
Ming obviously shepherded in that era of Asian basketball, and
basketball is huge in China for example. You know, think
about Major League Baseball, the season began in South Korea,
the NFL, they're not slowing down. They're adding to the

(02:34):
international slate. You have a game being played in Germany. Again,
you have Brazil being added to the slate this regular season.
So this is the way all sports are going in
college football being one of the most enormous sports brands
in our country, college football and Dublin, Ireland have sort

(02:55):
of become synonymous early in the season.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
And so yeah, it's a little weird.

Speaker 6 (02:59):
That it isn't what Dame but but college football out
in Ireland.

Speaker 3 (03:03):
That's starting to make sense.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
Yeah, this is the fifth game that will be played
at this stadium. I believe there's been a couple of
other games at other stadiums, but this is a Viva
stadium in Dublin. I remember watching this game. This game
the same the Notre Dame Navy game was played on
this field last year. I remember I was, you know,
got my binoculars. I was trying to find is there
any field condition issues? It looked okay last year, Brian,

(03:28):
I don't know if you recall anything, but it didn't
look like field conditions were an issue, right. I think
the weather, obviously is always something that plays a factor,
but it doesn't look like the forecast is that bad. Today.
Didn't have a competitive game last year. I think we'll
get some kind of semblance of a competitive game at
least to start. Georgia Tech's offense is legit, like they
could score some points. Their defense is a whole nother story.

(03:52):
But this Florida State offense is what I'm really interested in. Right,
they lost a ton, I mean they lost pretty much everybody,
like basically every single player in the skill position group,
including the quarterback Jordan Travis. So we'll see what dju
has right coming in from Morgan State, this will be
his third program in three years. I trust Mike Norvell.
I think he's a fantastic coach. The question is can

(04:13):
he kind of get all the pieces to fit together
in a very early season game where the stakes are
a little higher for him than I think some of
the other games taking place today. Like this is the
game today, it's the shortest spread of any of the
of the four games involving FBS teams. It appears to
be the most competitive game. It's an acc game, so

(04:34):
it has a little more juice to it than your
average week zero game, and it's gonna be exciting. Obviously,
just getting call trouble back is exciting. But of course
this matchup I think offers just enough intrigue to wet
our whistle heading into weeks zero.

Speaker 6 (04:47):
Yeah, yeah, this is a lot of fun, especially considering
the big storyline Brian that Florida State is still smarting
from being left out of a Final four last Well.

Speaker 5 (04:58):
I was just gonna say last year the Notre Dame game.
I remember Sam Hartman, the Notre Dame quarterback, and at
the end of the game, he's like, I got this.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
It was like a shelale or something I forget.

Speaker 5 (05:13):
He's like, I got this from Is it the King
Ireland or the Prince?

Speaker 3 (05:19):
He looked very official. I don't know who the hell
this guy is, but he gave us. It was so funny.

Speaker 5 (05:25):
Yeah, but uh yeah, this game where I'm really really
interested to see what Djui as I call him, looks
like in a new offense another team. Gosh, he's been
well traveled, right it was Clemson and then Oregon State, right,
do I have that right?

Speaker 4 (05:42):
Yeah? It was great last year. Yeah, he just inconsistent,
I think, but he had some good numbers. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (05:47):
Now at Florida State and man dj Ui sometimes he's
been DJF you know, but against this Georgia Tech defense
man last season, they gave up two hundred and twenty
one rushing yards per game out that was one hundred
and twenty eighth among FBS teams.

Speaker 4 (06:07):
Yeah, that's not good.

Speaker 5 (06:08):
And so that's the thing is. We'll get into the
props a little bit later. But you look at BETMGM.
I'm looking at Djui and two hundred and twenty five
and a half passing yards.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
I think they're just gonna be running the ball and
he will.

Speaker 4 (06:20):
Yeah, he must have looked at my notes here, Brian.

Speaker 6 (06:24):
Yeah, yeah, well listen, DJU is the type of player
where some games he looks like a world beater, and
some games against better defenses, he can struggle. I remember
going up to Oregon State and watching DJU against the
San Diego State Aztecs defense, and they did well against him.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
You know.

Speaker 6 (06:43):
They they limited some of the things that he wanted
to do, especially some of the stuff outside the pocket.
If you can contain him, if you can almost crunch
the pocket down on him, he'll get happy feet. Sometimes
he'll make some poor decisions. He threw two picks in
that game. He was fourteen of thirty in that game,

(07:04):
so a little bit inconsistent there. They really really leaned
on his rushing abilities and the Oregon State Beavers run
game in general to get that victory, and you look
at the scoreboard, it was lopsided. Oregon State Beatdaztecs twenty
six to nine. But I just remember watching him in person.
Don't get me wrong, He's a compensatory athlete, so like

(07:26):
when he doesn't feel like it's happening through the air,
he'll start beating you with his legs, and that's exactly
what happened in that game. But there are ways to
limit the damage he could do to you through the air. Now,
I think I think going to Florida State now against
Georgia Tech today, I do think that Florida State has
the better quarterback. And I also think that this run

(07:49):
game for Florida State, the seminole run game going against
Georgia Tech's defense, it's a new defense over there on
that side of the ball. So you would give advantage
offensively to Florida State in this opener for the college
football season.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
But we'll see.

Speaker 6 (08:04):
Look these road games, especially international road games, for both
of these teams, they can be difficult because it's it's
difficult to get your footing set at the beginning of
any season. So the team with better comfort at opening
kickoffer or feeling more settled in. That's the teams that's
gonna have the most early success in this one.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
Yeah, who handles the pitch, who handles the outside elements?
A little bit more with this game than other games.
But it's funny because I was going through this Florida
State offense from last year, and I mean, yeah, it
just stuts all over everywhere. Johnny Wilson keon Coleman Benson
at running back. I think the kid that came in
from Bama, Royda Williams is going to be a star.

(08:46):
He will most likely be the belcow. That's another guy
to keep on your prop radar for today. The running
back for Florida State. I think Georgia Tech's offense, and
we'll get to it a little bit in the parlay platter.
I think Georgia Tech's offense, if they can handle what
Rich just said, I think will have some success. Haynes
King can move a little bit. He's inconsistent, he throws
a lot of picks that volatility, but this is a

(09:09):
very very good offense. Brent Kee is a very good
offensive coach. He was a former offensive lineman the Georgia
Tech offensive line pretty much returning everybody was very good
last year, one of the only offensive lines in the
country top ten and both run push and sack rate metrics.
So this is an again underrated Georgia Tech offense. Awful,
defense absolutely atrocious. They have to make improvements there. But

(09:33):
when you're talking about an early season game, it's interesting
do you show and we'll talk. I'm very fascinated your thoughts,
especially you're rich when it comes to the early season
college football, played college football.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
College.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
Why should I even be here because I want to
know what the coaches are saying on the field, like
do you show something early here? Because there's not a
bit advantage based on what I'm seeing of playing in
week zero. The week zero teams tend to do very
poorly in week one actually, And do you show early,
like do you show your good stuff here in week
zero or do you just you save that for later?

(10:11):
So I don't know if we're gonna see the best
today for either offense. But I'm fascinating to see how
Georgia Sex offense comes out because they can get you
up a little bit.

Speaker 6 (10:18):
Yeah, those are competing thoughts, and I will say the
majority of coaches early in the season, if you could
keep it vanilla and still get wins, you'd prefer to
do that, because you know down the line there are
going to be moments of the season where you're gonna
need to reach deep down into the bag and you're
gonna have to pull something out like the Philly Special.

Speaker 4 (10:39):
You know what I mean, Like, yeah, do you get
that one deep?

Speaker 3 (10:41):
Yeah, like you can.

Speaker 6 (10:42):
You can win super Bowls, you could win championship games
off of one play that you haven't unveiled. And so
we we know what that looks like. We've seen it before.
It's it's the uh the Statue of Liberty play that
Boise State pulled off in the Fiesta bullet. It happens
at the professional level, it happens at the college football level.

(11:03):
And so No, to answer your question, I don't think
we're gonna see if. If Florida State and by the way,
Georgia Tech both can prevent it from happening where they
have to do too much to win this game, they're
going to prevent that from happen.

Speaker 4 (11:16):
I'm sorry, Brian, I want to hear your thoughts too.

Speaker 5 (11:18):
You know, I don't believe you if You're just trying
to make me feel better all.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
Over the week.

Speaker 4 (11:26):
Zero gas bag.

Speaker 5 (11:28):
I'm expecting you know how well, we're kind of like
pass the baton, you know, like it's the four by
one hundred meter relay or something. I'm just expecting. When
it's my turn, You're like, you know, let Rich talk
more talk.

Speaker 4 (11:40):
I got the mute button over here.

Speaker 5 (11:45):
We've got a ton of you can tell I'm feisty already,
know what I'm saying here today? All right, We've got
Rich heron Berger, Penn State All American, Jared Smith FSR

throw this at you guys. So Aaron Rodgers is not
playing in the preseason and I think it's interesting because
their Week one opponent, the forty nine ers, their main

(13:38):
guys were playing last night. You saw Brock Purty out there,
you saw Deebo Samuel out there, you saw George Kittle
out there among others, and it's like, no, Aaron Rodgers,
He's coming off the Achilles injury, and it just seems
like there's there's a chorus, you know, and all the
voices are like right decision thumbs, you can't risk it it.

(14:02):
Am I the only one that says, why not get
them out.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
There for a series or two.

Speaker 5 (14:09):
You're gonna just go into Week one on the road
against the Niners and expect it to mesh and expect
there to be chemistry. And I also find it weird
where this has been a very hard training camp. This
is something that Aaron Rodgers talked about this week.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
Check it out.

Speaker 8 (14:24):
I would say the camp is much harder this year,
and maybe the hardest in the last seven or eight
in my career. I knew that had a little insight
coming into camp. That's what Robert wanted to do, so
I think it's been good for us.

Speaker 5 (14:37):
Okay, so hard training camp is something that the head
coach Robert Sala also talked about this week.

Speaker 9 (14:44):
We're not trying to revisit the Junction Boys, but at
the same time, this country club style that's kind of
taking on all of sport, not just football, but all
of sport.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
There's a fine line.

Speaker 9 (14:57):
They've got to be ready to play football.

Speaker 3 (14:59):
Okay.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
So that's what's strange to me is this is hardcore
Jets trading cat let's.

Speaker 3 (15:05):
Go knocking heads over here.

Speaker 5 (15:08):
Ah, the preseason injuries, it's too scary.

Speaker 3 (15:11):
It's just odd to me.

Speaker 5 (15:13):
And I'm not gonna say the season's gonna crumble, but
you get no playing time in the preseason for Aaron
Rodgers and everybody else, and you're expecting it to look
like a well oiled machine come Week one. When the
Niners like brock Perty's seventeen and four as a starter
with the Niners, he's four and two in the playoffs,
and he's out there with the ones last night, and

(15:35):
the Jets are like, nep too risky.

Speaker 4 (15:37):
I don't like it.

Speaker 5 (15:38):
And I seem to be the only one who's not
like just saluting this decision, like you can't risk it.

Speaker 3 (15:44):
I say, there's another side to it.

Speaker 5 (15:46):
You gotta look like you've got chemistry out there, are
you gonna take a week one?

Speaker 3 (15:51):
L And I think the Jets are a prime candidate
to do just that. I get what you're saying.

Speaker 6 (15:55):
But at the same token, if Aaron Rodgers reinjures himself
in a preseason game and he's out for any length
of time for the New York Jets, Robert Sala may
not be the head coach before he gets back from injury.

Speaker 3 (16:10):
That's the reality of the situation.

Speaker 6 (16:13):
So I think what Robert Sala did is the only
thing he could do being in his situation, Because again,
you're looking at it pragmatically from a standpoint of like
football overall, and I don't disagree with your assertion that
when other teams are putting their starters out there, we
should too, because you never want to fall behind the

(16:34):
eight ball from that standpoint, But when you start thinking
about football as being managed and run by actual people
who have jobs on the line, if Robert Sala loses
his starting quarterback that's his only hope to keeping his job,
then he's going to be viewed as careless, reckless, etc.

Speaker 3 (16:53):
Why was he out there at all?

Speaker 6 (16:54):
All of his decision making is going to be re litigated,
and like I said, if it's an eight week injury,
you know, if he hurts his shoulder on a hard sack,
you know, shoot, if he just trips over one of
his offensive lineman's foot and it's a freak thing where
all of a sudden he strains the toe and he's
dealing with turf toe for the rest of the season,
And you know, he comes back six weeks later, but

(17:16):
he's not the same Aaron Rodgers because he isn't moving
quite as crisply crisply, and they lose some games as
a result. Robert Sala could be fired before he even
returns to the lineup. So I think there's a little
bit of job security that's being weighed and measured into
this decision making process.

Speaker 4 (17:34):
So this feels like when I am trying to decide
when I'm undecided on a bet. Here's my process for
figuring out if I'm going to pull the trigger and
hit the submit button. Will I be more mad if
the bet wins and I didn't make it, Or will
I be more mad if I make the bet and
it loses. Do you put Rogers out there and he

(17:58):
loses something? You make the bet and it loses he
injures it does it? Will I be more upset about that?
Or will I be more upset if I don't make
the bet and I sit Rogers on the sidelines and
then we come out Week one and we look like
absolute terrible, like just the bottom barrel basement. The Niners
are running circles around us, and there's behind the eight

(18:19):
ball to start the year. I think in this situation,
I would be more mad if Rogers if something happened
to Rogers in the preseason. Like, to me, that's the
lesser of two evils, is to get my butt kicked
week one, but at least he's playing in Week one,
which really wasn't the case. Last year. We got one series,
not even not even the full series. I think last

(18:42):
week I said it was it felt like Christmas got
canceled and we have to wait until next year. Like
to me, that is the is the worst case scenario.
Whereas going out and getting my butt kicked week one
because I wasn't ready to play because I maybe didn't
get as many preseason reps. I can stomach that, at
least as from a Jets perspective, maybe from the outsider's perspective,

(19:02):
we look at it differently. But if I'm the Jets,
I've got my quarterback in week two, which is a
which is a step forward than what we had last year.

Speaker 3 (19:11):
I mean, listen, I hear what you guys are saying.

Speaker 5 (19:13):
But I will just say in response, scared money, don't
make money. And this is all it is with the
Jets is what if we could play that game in
training camp? Is like what if Aaron Rodgers trips over
his left guard and then you can't put him in
bubble wrap and just say don't don't touch the field
Rogers until.

Speaker 3 (19:33):
Week you could, but he's he's not gonna be sharp.

Speaker 4 (19:36):
It looks like you're trying to do that.

Speaker 3 (19:38):
Again defending NFC champions.

Speaker 5 (19:41):
Like I don't know why we're acting like a preseason
game is like the defensive lineman all have RPGs like
it's Blackhawk down or something like that.

Speaker 3 (19:53):
Land minds everywhere. No, no, no, but I will I
will say this.

Speaker 6 (19:57):
So say an offensive lineman just goes the wrong way
on a play. You know, here's the wrong play in
the huddle, and all of a sudden it's a jail
break and you have a defensive lineman screaming up the
middle of the offensive formation. Now at practice, like you
were saying, yes, anything can happen at practice, but in
a situation where and these things happen during games maybe

(20:18):
once twice a game, yea where a guy completely misses
an assignment and all of a sudden you have a
free shot at the quarterback. Sometimes the quarterback gets the ballway,
sometimes he takes a hit and then all of a sudden,
that defensive lineman gets to him in this game, this
last and final preseason game, and smokes Aaron Rodgers, and
he lands on that collarbone that he's injured in the past,

(20:40):
and then boom, he's out for eight weeks. Whereas that practice,
having him practice, he's wearing a red jersey. Everybody on
the field knows, even if you have a free shot
at the quarterback, if you touch Aaron Rodgers, you're gonna
be on the next thing smoking out of town. So
you are not going to wrap him up and bring
him to the ground. You're gonna you're probably not even

(21:01):
gonna tag off on him.

Speaker 3 (21:02):
Probably.

Speaker 6 (21:02):
The rule is if you get within a two yard
bubble of Aaron Rodgers, you may get a fine in
your locker the next day.

Speaker 3 (21:09):
So that's the difference. Brian.

Speaker 6 (21:11):
I understand everything you're saying, and I agree with it
from an overarching Hey, this is football scared money, don't
make no money. That makes sense to me. Trust me
when I tell you I agree with you. But from
this particular standpoint, it's like everything you said makes sense
except for this particular standpoint. Aaron Rodgers doesn't need the reps.

(21:32):
He's going to be fine, or by the way, he's
not gonna get any better if he appears in any
preseason games. Maybe certain players will be more comfortable playing
with him when the live action comes.

Speaker 3 (21:42):
But but Aaron, he's gonna be okay.

Speaker 6 (21:45):
Now, in terms of the potentiality of an injury that
could have a staggering effect on how you start the
season or your season in total, there's a risk there,
and so mitigating that risk, to me, feels like the
only thing the guy in charge, Robert Salah, can do
at this point to mitigate to mitigate the most risk

(22:08):
by not having him play. If he sends him out
there and he gets him injured, I think he would
probably end up losing his job because there would be
voices inside of that building saying, hey, you shouldn't do that.

Speaker 3 (22:21):
Hey, why are we doing that?

Speaker 6 (22:23):
And if he did it anyways, well then all of
a sudden you're rebuking you know, some of the the
the thoughts of the people in the building. Uh, to
do it your own way? And for what for a
game that doesn't matter. So again, getting back to the
human native, the human decision making of football, I think
this is the only choice that could have been made.

Speaker 4 (22:44):
Brian, You are one hundred percent right. Scared money does
not make money. Here's the problem, though. The Jets are
scared money. They are scared out of their mind because
of what happened last year, and I think that is
affecting their decision. Like if the Rogers injury doesn't happened
last year the way that it does, I'm willing to
bet that he plays at least a series or two

(23:05):
in this preseason. But it's just it is scared money,
like they are petrified of something happening, something freakish. And
that is coming from a fan who has been with
this team since Keith Byer's fumbled at the goal line
in the ninety eight A. It's a championship game, I
can tell you there's something freakish that is going to
happen in the NFL. Odds are the Jets are going

(23:27):
to be involved. But fumble this and Keith Byers fumble that.
It just it seems like it just keeps rearing its
ugly you know what, towards this team. So yeah, this
is scared money. Like, this is a scared money decision
that the Jets made, and I think because of the
factors that Rich is alluding to, they can live with it.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
Man, I am loading up on Niners first quarter nine.

Speaker 4 (23:49):
Oh, that's pretty cool that numbers come down a lot
over the last day or two. I think maybe there's
some rumblings maybe Brandon and you gets traded.

Speaker 3 (23:57):
Maybe, Yeah, I don't know about that. Still still loading
up even if BA isn't out there.

Speaker 5 (24:02):
Last thing I'll say is this real quick is I
would love to know how the top coaches, or all
of the coaches for that matter in the NFL the
rest of them would have handled this decision if it
were their decision. You know, if this is Andy Reid's decision.
Patrick Mahomes is out there, he's a three time Super

(24:23):
Bowl champion already, Andy, and he's out there in the
preseason right like you're seeing a lot of the main
guys out there. I think Andy Reid, even with the
same scenario Rogers had four s naps last season. I
think he's out there for a series or two. I
think he's looking at it like the Niners were out
there last night, and we're not gonna have our guy

(24:44):
out there.

Speaker 3 (24:45):
And we're gonna expect to be as sharp. But you're talking.

Speaker 5 (24:48):
I know, I get it, I get it, ye right,
But that's the thing with Robert Salah is bro like,
it's not just about you, it's about the squad. And
I know that he's thinking about both. But you're right, Rich,
I think he's thinking a lot about himself, like we
can't we can't have that.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
It's it's like negative thinking.

Speaker 4 (25:08):
Of yeah, it just had the Jets.

Speaker 3 (25:11):
That's the job, man. You're not gonna get anywhere with that.

Speaker 4 (25:14):
You're right, And that's also the Jets.

Speaker 6 (25:18):
You nailed it, though it is it is a little
bit of a selfish decision. I really do think it is.
And I think I think if if Rogers was playing
for the Chiefs, if he was playing for the Niners,
if he was playing for even the Ravens, right, because
Harbaugh's got.

Speaker 3 (25:32):
Job security, Harball.

Speaker 6 (25:35):
Oh yeah, yeah, exactly because he could do it everybody.
He can't do any wrong yet he has won or
lost any games. So yeah, when you have job security,
you feel secure in any decision you make, even if
you're going against maybe some of the popular beliefs in
the building.

Speaker 3 (25:49):
I guarantee you.

Speaker 6 (25:50):
Robert Salah took a temperature of every single person's opinion
around him, and that helped him formulate his decision because
he was like, whatever we do with Rogers, one thing
I know, considering how thin the ice underneath me is,
I'm not going to ruffle too many feathers with this decision.
So I'll ask Rogers, but I'll also ask my GM,
I'll ask all of his lieutenants, I'll ask my assistant coaches,

(26:13):
I'll talk to the owner, and we'll.

Speaker 3 (26:15):
All come to a consensus agreement.

Speaker 6 (26:17):
So we're all going to wear the cone of shame
if this doesn't work out the right way.

Speaker 3 (26:21):
Because he wants to keep his job. It's good to
be the king.

Speaker 6 (26:25):
He may not be the king if Rogers isn't available,
and I think everybody knows that.

Speaker 3 (26:29):
So he's gonna sit him for the preseason.

Speaker 6 (26:31):
In the first action we'll see is going to be
against the forty nine ers on the road, and this
time he's praying that that Achilles holds up.

Speaker 4 (26:40):
Yeah, give us more than a series, please, That's all
I ask. Can we get more than one series this
year with this guy I'm playing.

Speaker 3 (26:49):
I don't think if he gets hurt series too.

Speaker 5 (26:51):
You're like, it's like progress.

Speaker 3 (26:54):
Yeah, additional series over.

Speaker 4 (26:57):
Here, put him in the Hall of Fame. We got
two series, all right.

Speaker 5 (27:02):
We're hoping for a many, many series from this guy
this morning because he always delivers. His name is Isaac
Loewen Crown, and he's got the latest.

Speaker 3 (27:11):
What's going on?

Speaker 10 (27:11):
I low top of the morning to you fellas and
all start with Yeah, see what I did their little
college football Dublin analogy We started in Major League Baseball
on Friday night as Shohy Otani reached the forty forty
club in epic fashion his fortieth stolen base in the
fourth inning, a game winning grand slam in the bottom
of the ninth inning for his fortieth home run to

(27:32):
beat the Tampa Bay Rays seven to three. Otani the
fastest in Major League history to reach the forty to
forty club padre shout out the Mets seven to nothing.
Joe Musgrove allowed one hit and struck out nine and
seven innings. In Dan Wilson's debut as the manager of
the Seattle Mariners, they defeated the San Francisco Giants in
ten innings, six to five. Aaron Judge is Major League

(27:53):
leading forty ninth home run of the Yankees three nothing
win over Colorado and indeed. The college football season kicks
off today noon East at Dublin, Ireland tenth ranks Florida
State against Georgia Tech.

Speaker 11 (28:05):
Finally in the NFL.

Speaker 10 (28:07):
Among the games later today, the Los Angeles Chargers visiting
the Dallas Cowboys and at the Chargers team hotel. On
Friday night, fifteen Chargers players and staff members got stuck
in an elevator. The elevator got stuck in what is
known as a blind shaft, in which the top of

(28:27):
the elevator car is at least ten feet below the
closest door opening. The Dallas Urban Search and Rescue Team
had to be deployed and had to help everyone out
through the elevator's ceiling panel. Now rich I realized this
might be a delicate subject, but during your playing days,

(28:49):
in a matchup between you and an elevator ceiling panel,
who wins back to you?

Speaker 11 (28:55):
Guys?

Speaker 3 (28:56):
Yeah yeah, thank you thanky lo.

Speaker 5 (28:58):
It is Fox Sports Radios to kick Off, presented by
bet MGM all season long. Bet MGM's offering you a
second chance on your first TD bet. When a customer
places a wager on a first touchdown scorer bet and
he does not score first, but score second, bet MGM
will return one of their stake back in cash.

Speaker 2 (29:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (29:20):
I just pictured the NCUBLEA with that elevator story for
the Chargers going that is.

Speaker 3 (29:24):
Tell me, tell me Harbaugh was on that elevator. Come on,
tell me he was on it.

Speaker 5 (29:28):
Just tell me he was right, come on, they punished it.
He's not even in college football anymore. But uh yeah,
wild story. And then something else. I Lo mentioned Otani,
freaking Otani. This guy man, This is how it sounded
on Spectrum Sports and at La Joe Davis on the
final call.

Speaker 3 (29:46):
This was amazing.

Speaker 2 (29:47):
First Bitch ser Field series going back, he's at the truck,
he's at the wall.

Speaker 5 (30:04):
That guy man like he had a stolen base and
a home run to get to exactly forty forty on
the season, and Dave Roberts, the Dodgers manager, he said
it after the game, He's like to get a stolen
base and a walk off grand Slam to reach forty forty.
That's unbelievable. That's like a movie where you walk out

(30:26):
like this is dumb. Yeah, it really happened in life.
And he's got a shot for the fifty to fifty club,
which hasn't even been close to being approached in Major
League Baseball history. Fastest to get to forty forty. The
guy is phenomenal. And this is all after elbow surgery. Yeah, right,
Like he's just crushing it. That guy is just unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (30:48):
He is. He's the best baseball player ever.

Speaker 6 (30:51):
I was thinking about it last night, and I understand
we have to contextualize every single part of that commentary,
but if you really start looking at what he's been
able to accomplish and also some of the things that
he's had to overcomadi being an international player, having this

(31:12):
situation that could have completely derailed his season this year
with his interpreter lying and cheating and stealing from him.
All of the attention that we paid to the early
career injuries when he got over here from Japan to
Major League Baseball, and then even this could have been

(31:32):
used as an excuse what you just said, Brian, the
fact that he had elbow surgery in the offseason. This
guy isn't even implementing one of the strongest part of
his game, which is from the mound, and he's doing this.
He is the most sensational baseball player we've ever seen,
and it's a gift to be able to watch him
have these career moments. Because not only was it a

(31:54):
stolen base and a walk off grand Slam homer to
get into the forty forty club, that was also his
first ever walk off home run. He did it in
that kind of heroic fashion. The guy never shrinks away
from any moment. Otani's the best.

Speaker 4 (32:11):
Yeah. So I was thinking about this last night too,
and I tweeted that I'm just grateful to be alive
in the prime.

Speaker 3 (32:17):
Yeah. Sure of.

Speaker 4 (32:19):
Not only show Hey, but also Aaron Judge, who hit
his forty ninth home run yesterday on pace for sixty two.
That number is important in Yankees' lore, obviously being one
more than than what Maris had in that very impressive season,
but I think there's just there's just so many things
to love about this story in baseball. I think this

(32:42):
season in baseball has been unique. Of course, I'm very
you know, engaged in the nerfees in the in the
run scoring, especially early in games. But run scoring is
down across baseball this year.

Speaker 3 (32:54):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (32:54):
Yet sho hey Otani and Aaron Judge are both having
these historic seasons. It really puts it in perspective. You
have to reframe your mind because we have been desensitized
to home runs because of the steroid era. We don't
view it as this amazing accomplishment anymore to hit all
these home runs and hit the ball really far. But
we have to reframe our minds a little bit because

(33:17):
recently it hasn't been that era. We've seen run scoring
and power decrease, especially this season. So for them to
have these types of years, we have to kind of
trick our brains into being amazed by it because it
really is. And the other thing to keep in mind,
and this is something with baseball that I think, well
will never change, but it's also a reason why the

(33:39):
stars don't always have as much gravitas. You can pitch
around players in baseball, you can neutralize the stars in
baseball more than any other sport. You can't do that
in the NBA. You can't do that in the NFL
with a star quarterback. You can kind of do it
with a star receiver, but at some point that guy
is gonna make a play. They are gonna get the

(34:01):
ball to him. In Major League Baseball, if you don't
want to face a guy, don't take your base like.
You don't even have to pitch to him. You can
pitch around him, you can do the unintentional intentional walk.
But what they're doing this year is defying all of that,
and they are having just it is truly remarkable. We
really do need to take a step back and just
appreciate the greatness of not only Otani but also Aaron

(34:24):
Judge this season.

Speaker 5 (34:25):
Yeah, I was just thinking, you're big on the ear
fees and nerfees. I wonder if we're gonna have the
oer fee right the Otani run scored in the first,
that's a great bet.

Speaker 3 (34:35):
What do you mean, might have to implement that in there.

Speaker 5 (34:38):
And I'll just add super fast is I think we're
we're finally starting to get away from the steroid era.

Speaker 3 (34:46):
What meaning. It's a shame that Judge has it.

Speaker 5 (34:49):
When you said that Jared, he's got a chance to
get the sixty two, I wish that still meant what
it once did.

Speaker 3 (34:55):
You know what I mean?

Speaker 5 (34:56):
But yep, we've got seventy three from Bonds in seventy
from Choir and Sammy Sosa hit over sixty two home
runs in three different seasons, you know what I mean.
It's a shame that this Aaron Judge, like March to
sixty two.

Speaker 3 (35:10):
It would be so huge if.

Speaker 5 (35:13):
Not for the steroid era. That's the shame in the
whole thing. But you're right, absolutely, the marvels that are
Aaron Judge and Otani. I hope Otani gets to fifty
to fifty bad. I think that would be sensational. And
I wonder if we're gonna hear any any whispers or
murmurs next year if he's pitching and he's not in
the fifty to fifty club of man, if he just

(35:33):
focused on hitting right.

Speaker 4 (35:35):
Like, keep him out of the spring training games, that'll
do it, right.

Speaker 3 (35:39):
Just call a Robert Solid. Keep him out of every bench.
He's not even going to play the first half of
the season. That's right.

Speaker 5 (35:45):
It's risk as the nation is struggling with rising expenses.

Speaker 3 (37:12):
All right, let's dive into this.

Speaker 2 (37:15):
Check this out with our late letter.

Speaker 5 (37:18):
Okay, mister Jared Smith, you've been in the lab working hard.
There is smoke billowing out of that facility right there.
What do you have for us this morning?

Speaker 4 (37:26):
We are back, same game, parlays are back, props are back,
College football is back. We're gonna put it all together,
mash it all up together. I don't know if you
guys Thanksgiving dinner, I like to put all my food
together and make a little schmorgsborger. But that's what we're
gonna do here with Georgia Tech and Florida State. Of course,
this game starts in about two hours. Let's start with
a prop, and of all the props today, we'll get

(37:47):
to some more props later in the show. This is
the one I think I like the best, and it's
DJU at plus money to find the end zone. Again,
he's a bowling ball in the backfield. When they get
close to the goal line. You're gonna hear Roido Williams's name,
but I think you're gonna hear Dju's name as well.
I'm a little bit lower on his passing numbers today.
I think running the ball is where dj will have

(38:08):
some success. Georgia Tech's defense was brutal last year against
the run, and it's a great plus money bet on
its own DJU to find the end zone. Florida State.
I don't think this is going to be a high
powered offense this year. I think this is gonna be
a little bit more conservative of an attack, especially early
as they're working in these new pieces. But again, we
are fading the Georgia Tech defense which has been brutal.

(38:28):
So let's take Florida State to score seventeen or more
in the first half, which is less than half of
what the number is for the full game, and then
for the full game, let's bet them to get to
thirty points. I think Florida State thirty feels like a
safe number for their scoring output today. And then finally,
I think Georgia Tech's offense has a little wiggle here.
I don't think they're gonna like the scoreboard up either,

(38:50):
because I think offenses in general are going to be
a little bit tapered this week. But Georgia Tech getting
to fourteen points one touchdown in each half feels very attainable,
buying about almost a full touchdown off of their full
game total. So we got dju to find the end zone.
We got Florida State to score seventeen or more in
the first half to score thirty or more for the

(39:11):
full game. Again, those are very correlated bets. And then
Georgia Tech over thirteen and a half points for the
full game. You put all this together at bet MGM
plus three sixty. Not our juiciest parlay. We'll get some
more juicy ones down the road when we get some
of these underdogs in there. But I feel very confident
that we are gonna have a little bit of offense,
just enough to get us over the finish line here.

Speaker 2 (39:32):
I like it.

Speaker 6 (39:33):
This game has become offensive like we are looking at
a time in college football where style points are needed.
They're desired, they're wanted, they're necessary, they're requisite to make
this now even expanded field the playoff. If there's one
thing Florida State's not gonna do is leave any points

(39:55):
on the field. They're gonna score all of them because
they do not want to get left out in the
cold again. And so it doesn't matter who you're playing,
whether it's Georgia Tech and Dublin or you know, if
you're playing in the conference championship game, if you could
just just stick your thumb over your opponent one last
time garbage points, it doesn't matter.

Speaker 3 (40:13):
They all actually I should say they all matter. So
I'm with you.

Speaker 6 (40:17):
I think taking the over on a lot of offensive
stats this year for the Seminoles is probably a good idea.

Speaker 5 (40:23):
I think with both quarterbacks who are prone to mistakes,
I think this can help your bet, Jared. And I'm
sure it's something that you factored in there where Haines
King had fifteen interceptions last year, Like let's say Haines
King turns the ball over in Georgia Tech territory and
Florida State's even closer to scoring like or vice versa
with DJU. So yeah, shaky quarterback play can actually be

(40:47):
your friend in an older like this.

Speaker 4 (40:49):
Sometimes sloppy games do go over.

Speaker 5 (40:52):
Absolutely all right, come it up next. This is so
unbelievably weak. We'll give you the details coming up.

Speaker 3 (41:01):
Oh, what's going on? Happy Saturday to you.

Speaker 5 (41:03):
We are less than two hours away from kickoff.

Speaker 3 (41:07):
It is a beautiful thing.

Speaker 5 (41:08):
Florida State and Georgia Tech getting it on in Ireland.
More college football on our minds though this story My goodness,
coach Prime Deon Sanders at Colorado. So the story is
here that Deon Sanders in Colorado will no longer take
questions from a local columnist.

Speaker 3 (41:30):
This is Sean Keeler.

Speaker 5 (41:32):
He writes for the Denver Post and Colorado says, there
have been some personal attacks with what this guy has
been writing about Deon Sanders in the program. He's used
such phrases as deposition, dion, false prophet, the Bruce Lee
of BS, which.

Speaker 3 (41:53):
Is so pretty good.

Speaker 5 (41:54):
L and make sure you're sitting down for this. This
cuts deep circus. I know, man, that is more than
enough reason to freeze a guy out.

Speaker 3 (42:05):
Stop. Let me collect myself before you get everything you
just said.

Speaker 6 (42:09):
I feel ho coach Prime. Coach Prime.

Speaker 3 (42:12):
By the way, does he still go by that Moniker? Oh,
I don't know. I'm not sure. I don't know. But
thoughts and prayers.

Speaker 5 (42:18):
Though after this little segment here, Yeah, Dion Sanders, he
does have specific language in his contract that requires him
to speak with quote mutually agreed upon media good boy.
So it's only who I want to talk to. Listen,
Dion was like this at media day. This is on

(42:38):
August ninth, And if he didn't want to talk to you.

Speaker 3 (42:42):
He just wouldn't. And I think this is just so.

Speaker 5 (42:44):
Incredibly weak, because here's the bigger picture. You're the example
for your team, you know, and you're teaching a lesson
as if in real life you have the block function
on Twitter with people that you don't get a lotong
with or that you dislike or you think are bad
mouthing you.

Speaker 3 (43:03):
It doesn't work like that. Man.

Speaker 5 (43:05):
You can't just do that with a coworker that you're
having challenges with. You've got to navigate around stuff all
throughout your life. And you're setting this false formula in
motion for there are guys that are gonna be in
the NFL you're teaching your son Shador or Travis Hunter
that if you dislike or don't get along with a

(43:25):
columnist who's bad mouthing, you could just not answer his
questions or her questions.

Speaker 3 (43:30):
It doesn't work like that.

Speaker 5 (43:32):
I think this is so thin skin, This is so
weak to freeze a guy out because he dislike a
few of the things that he's written.

Speaker 3 (43:39):
It's so lame, it really is.

Speaker 6 (43:41):
And to your point, I think it sets the wrong
message to your locker room, to your players. Football is
a tough sport. Tough minded individuals usually have success. That
doesn't mean that everyone who's tough is going to have success,
and it doesn't mean that everybody who's successful is going
to be tough. This is what I'll say this. I
thought Dion Sanders was tougher. I really did. Because that

(44:04):
is weak minded, That is kind of immature. That is
kind of the antithesis of what it seems that he
preaches about the style of football he wants to play
and the type of men he's raising in that program.
Because remember, even though these are professional athletes now capitalizing

(44:26):
on their name, image and likeness, a lot of these
guys they are days or months or just weeks out
from sleeping in their childhood bed. Okay, these guys are
our days or months or weeks out from being grounded
by their parents for the last time or having the
keys taken away because they were out past curfew. I mean,

(44:49):
so you are a part of the maturation process of
these young people who are going to be pillars of communities.
I mean, how many athletes I played with over the
course of my playing career in my life ended up
becoming politicians or leaders of industry, or people who role
models who people look up to. I think this is

(45:12):
the wrong approach. I think there are so many other
ways that they could have handled this, And as far
as the publicly facing storyline behind it, I think he
should be embarrassed.

Speaker 4 (45:24):
So I think both of you nailed those takes. I
don't have anything to add except that Dion has a
history of this. In twenty twenty one, he did the
same exact thing at Jackson State to a reporter from
the Clarion Ledger who he got upset that they published
a story related to a court filing about a recruit
and how he did something bad in a prior you
know situation, and then you know Jackson State was recruiting him,

(45:46):
and that reporter was questioning the recruiting process and questioning
bringing in the player, and Dean did the exact same thing.
They barred this reporter. I don't know for the entire season,
but they definitely took some action. Again, it's giving him access.
Right access is everything to these reporters. The only other
thing I'll add is my own personal perspective on it.

(46:09):
I'm not in the public spotlight like Deon Sanders is.
I'm not saying that I am. But over the last
two years doing this show, becoming part of the gambling
media boom, I have been thrust a lot more into
the public spotlight. Obviously, there's been some positives about that.
There's been a lot of negatives. I have never faced
criticism publicly like I have faced over the last two

(46:30):
years for bets that I give out opinions that I have.
But you have to be aware that if you are
spending your entire day, which for the most part I do,
analyzing other players, criticizing other teams for their decisions that
they make with players, you have to be okay with
taking that same criticism. You have to be if you

(46:51):
are Deon Sanders, and you are making a splash. You
are a disruptor in college football. You have to be
okay with both sides of that. Positive you're disrupting, you're changing,
you're trailblazing, and negative you're going to take criticism. It
is going. It is inevitable for someone in his position,

(47:11):
and to shy away from it. The one adjustment I've
made in my career is I've hugged the problem. I've
leaned into it. I've become aware of it. I have,
you know, not changed my core values. But you make
adjustments based off of criticism, just like other analysis that
you get from other positive people in your life. So
you just have to be aware of it. And one

(47:31):
hundred percent this is the wrong thing to do is
to block the problem. I prefer to hug it, lean
into it, and try to fix it. And that is
not what happened here with Deon Sanders.

Speaker 3 (47:42):
Right, And that's the weird thing to me, is like
if Dion.

Speaker 5 (47:46):
Was never a player, especially like a star player, and
there have been many critical things said and written about
Dion during his playing days, and Dion Sanders was the
type of player that was like, okay, he would take
a lot of things personally. Remember with Tim McCarver. Where
in the locker room when he was with the Atlanta Braves,

(48:07):
He's like, where's macarver at? And he grabbed some It
was like a bucket of water and he threw it
on McCarver. And he's been thin skinned a lot. But
as a player, he'd be like, Okay, watch what I do, right.
I don't think you would freeze a guy out and
not talk to him. He'd be like, okay, I'm gonna
make you eat your words. Why is it different as
a coach? I mean really like he should just make

(48:28):
this local columnist eat his words with what Colorado does
on the football field. But it's a different approach. This
goes back to August ninth. This was one of the
exchanges he had with a local CBS reporter.

Speaker 3 (48:41):
Listen to this. It's such a joke.

Speaker 2 (48:43):
Eric Kristensen with CBS Sports Colorado Tyler.

Speaker 12 (48:47):
I'm not doing none with CB's next question. It's above
that you got none to do with you. I love
for you, I appreciate respect you, and got none to
do with you.

Speaker 2 (48:57):
They know what they did. I'm here in Denver, not national.

Speaker 12 (49:02):
You are who you are CBS to CBS, all right,
I respect you. I just why I told you I'm
looking at you and now I as a man, I respect,
I got love for you.

Speaker 2 (49:12):
But what they did was found.

Speaker 5 (49:13):
Okay, So we don't even know what he was upset
about with CBS. There might have been a column where
Dion was ranked the second worst head coach in the
Big twelve. Maybe that was it, but Dion Sanders is like, yeah,
just CBS, I'm out on that altogether.

Speaker 3 (49:32):
You know what I mean, I'd like to take that to.

Speaker 5 (49:35):
The extreme where what if I don't know, Tony Romo
wanted to do a sit down interview and he.

Speaker 3 (49:40):
Was like that CBS can't do that.

Speaker 5 (49:42):
Nope, nope, totally out on anything CBS related.

Speaker 3 (49:45):
No, Jim Nance, don't even approach me. It's the local guys,
some dude completely.

Speaker 5 (49:52):
It's ridiculous, man, It's just it's such a weak approach.
I thought Rich nailed it where he's like, I thought
Deon was tougher than this. Yeah, that's exactly what I
think too. It's like, bro, you're this thin skinned. I mean,
that's dude, and not who I want as a head coach.
I mean, what do you expect from the program. If
you are that thin skin, you gotta be able to

(50:14):
take criticism, especially at a major college football institution.

Speaker 3 (50:19):
We are we doing here.

Speaker 6 (50:20):
Also, what you're teaching your team, your players is, you know,
gump chin and sticktuitiveness and intestinal fortitude. When tough times come,
how do you handle adversity? That is one of the
biggest parts of football is the obstacles that lay.

Speaker 3 (50:38):
In your path overcoming them.

Speaker 6 (50:41):
So with Dion doing this, what the message it sends
to is his locker room is when times get tough, Yeah,
just just roll over and use an excuse not to
deal with those tough times and hope they go away.

Speaker 3 (50:55):
Pull the covers up over your head, you know. So, No,
I don't want to talk to CBS. Know what they did. Hey,
columnists from the Denver.

Speaker 6 (51:03):
Fort Fort Post, whatever newspaper or magazine. This columnist who's
been barred to cover the team any longer works for Hey,
we don't wanna. We don't want to talk to you
anymore because you say mean things. Okay, well, how about this.
If Colorado has a season record wise that mimics last season,
what are these players gonna do when time gets tough.

(51:25):
Are they gonna hang in there for Dion Sanders? Are
they gonna go chase nil money elsewhere in the big
twelve or or what's left of.

Speaker 3 (51:33):
The back twelve if there is a pack.

Speaker 6 (51:35):
Twelve left anywhere the big ten, the sec you know,
you know what I mean, Like, this is the type
of stuff this echoes and reverberates. I promise you this
isn't the only place where this thin skinned attitude is
availing itself. Because this is this is a personality trope.
This is something that echoes throughout your life. It's not

(51:58):
just gonna be relegated to this one where it's just
just these two guys are the only two brush ups
he's had where somebody says something a little bit, you know,
out of pocket, and all of a sudden he's writing
them off.

Speaker 3 (52:12):
How many players have felt that way? You know what
I'm saying.

Speaker 4 (52:15):
Let's be honest. This is what they do in Russia, Like,
this is what they do in the countries where they
don't want free press, Like they just silence the critics
and it just again, you might not like what they're saying,
but you have to have context for both sides of
the argument. Both sides of the argument are valid and
they need to be heard, and then you, as as
the consumer of the media, could make your decision. Now,

(52:39):
is it fair to also say that this reporter probably
is never going to write anything positive about Colorado. Yeah,
and it's fair to ask why that's taking place, because
there are negative stories that need to be reported, but
you can't overlook the positive just to attack the negative.
And I think that's where the other side of this
argument also needs to be stated. I don't know the

(52:59):
history of this reporter. I don't know if he's got
a beef with Colorado or if they stiffed him in
the past, or if he doesn't like Dion. But fair
reporting is just as important as Dion allowing the fair reporting.
So both sides of this. But obviously in this situation,
you can't silence the critics. You have to let the
critics speak, and then if they're just saying ridiculous things,

(53:21):
then you have to, you know, make adjustments off of that.
But yeah, this is this is not a good look
for for for Prime.

Speaker 5 (53:27):
I wonder what the questions are gonna be like after
a bad loss by Colorado.

Speaker 4 (53:33):
You know, he's not gonna be any reporters in the room.

Speaker 5 (53:35):
They're gonna be yeah, yeah know, they just don't show
up against Arizona. They lose by three touchdowns or what
have you. And the questions are just like, but coach Prime,
in the second quarter, you had a little uh you know,
someone asked about Aflac.

Speaker 4 (53:50):
That was one of the questions that was asked.

Speaker 3 (53:52):
Oh my god, a spokesperson.

Speaker 4 (53:54):
So again, that's the part about it, like we can't
have Mickey mouse media either, Like we've got to have
fair on both sides. It has to be positive negative
and we can't be asking silly questions like Aflac.

Speaker 6 (54:04):
Nick Saban speaking of Aflack was a whiner. He was
a whiner. There were times where he got to the
podium and he whined about how his team was being covered.

Speaker 3 (54:13):
Right.

Speaker 6 (54:13):
He would be like, this is rat poison what you
guys are saying. And he would call out certain members
of the media occasionally. He never barred anybody knowledge, you know,
he never just fought back. Yeah, he just fought back.
He used his bully pulpit sometimes to an advantage. But
but he told you know, okay, uh Milrow his quarterback. Okay,

(54:34):
you remember when the hashtag let the naysayers know when viral.

Speaker 3 (54:38):
Because of the college, you gotta really hover on that.

Speaker 6 (54:45):
Okay, so so, but but that's the attitude that's instilled
by Nick Saban, right, that's the attitude that's instilled at
that Alabama culture. It's like, we're going to change all
their minds. They could say whatever they want about the
wrong culture.

Speaker 3 (55:00):
Yeah that's right, that's right. They could stay whatever they.

Speaker 6 (55:03):
Want on the outside, but we know and we're gonna
change their minds. What Dean Sanders saying is if they're
gonna say naughty, bad things about us, we're gonna pull
our covers up to our eyebrows and we're gonna pretend
like like like nobody can say anything nasty about us.
How about fight back? How about play better football? That's
how you change minds and hearts.

Speaker 4 (55:23):
That's for me, the right message.

Speaker 5 (55:28):
But that's the question is whichever team you root for,
would you want your head coach doing the same thing?
And the answer is hell, no, No, I don't want
is ah.

Speaker 4 (55:40):
It's just like it also doesn't fly in any other
place except college because the college programs have so much
power over who gets access. It's ridiculous.

Speaker 3 (55:49):
Yeah, all right.

Speaker 5 (55:50):

Follow the money, real good money.

Speaker 5 (57:12):
We are following the money with our good friend Seamus McGee,
team lead of Sports Trading at BETMGM. Good morning to you, Seamus.
You know it's funny. As a fan, I know which
game you're looking most forward to today. It's got to
be a ranked team against Georgia Tech. But as a
better huh, that's a different question. As a better, which

(57:32):
game are you most looking forward to today?

Speaker 13 (57:36):
Hey guys, going to be back and all right, just
jumping right in. Okay, alright, so my eyes looking towards Atlanta,
Georgia do the Swack meac Challenge game. Florida A and
M in Norfolk State. I really like Florida A and M.
I'm saying minus thirteen and a half at most shops

(57:57):
right now, I think I play this number up to
about seventeen. Florida A and M coming off a great year.
They lose a lot of talent from last year, but
they introduce you know, we're talking upwards of almost twenty
FBS transfers to that team. Meanwhile, Norfolk State, while they
do have some continuity, they weren't that great last year
as like three and eight. So Norfolk State they're probably

(58:20):
gonna improved this year, I think, but I don't think
they keep this within two touchdowns.

Speaker 4 (58:25):
That's why I love shamu is we get the special
right out of the game. I remember I was texting
him yesterday and he's like, already got wired and got
something circled, but we're waiting on a line. So Florida
A and M minus thirteen and a half.

Speaker 3 (58:39):
That is the coolest thing I've ever heard.

Speaker 4 (58:41):
The shame is specialist back baby. All right, let's get
to this Georgia Tech Florida's State game. Because I was
messaging you back and forth the AFRED yesterday, it does
seem like the popular pick seems to be the Knowles
and the sharper side seems to be Tech. Does that
mean Florida State's going by twenty? Who knows. The game
has to be played, but from your perspect if, it
does seem like Florida State is getting a pretty significant

(59:04):
portion of the handle here at this early stage.

Speaker 13 (59:07):
Yeah, coming into the week, it was really fifty to
fifty split on the money. But the sharper side is
definitely Georgia Tech. We opened this earlier in the summer
at plus thirteen and a half and we're already down
to plus ten and a half on the line right
now and today the public's definitely coming in on Florida
State minus ten and a half, but that number's still

(59:27):
not budget. We're still sitting there at ten and a
half total. Really hasn't moved it all from fifty five
and a half. And you know, Florida State definitely going
to be in everyone's parlays today, yep, on the money line.

Speaker 6 (59:37):
When we're looking at the NFL preseason, I know we're
looking ahead, it's countdown to kickoff, we have college football.
But how much action are we seeing on preseason in
the NFL?

Speaker 13 (59:48):
Now?

Speaker 6 (59:48):
Has that ramped up a great deal recently with obviously
the peripherlationa proliferation of sports books going online and things
of that nature, or are people still just chomping at
the bit for the regular season or is the preseason
worthy of of dollars spent at the window?

Speaker 13 (01:00:10):
I think it's nat to say that we haven't seen
an increase in preseason betting, you know, like you said,
the more sports betting is expanding and getting more popular,
whether it's on social media or like take places like
ESPN or FS one. People are betting the preseason. It's
all about news. People are really tuned into you know,
who's playing, who's going to be playing, how many snaps,

(01:00:33):
who's sitting. So definitely sigmore action, and I think it's
a great opportunity for some people who are trying to
get into, you know, trying to beat the number. This
is a great opportunity to try and do so, especially
earlier in the week when more team news is coming out.

Speaker 5 (01:00:46):
He's Seamous McGee from bet MGM joining us here on
countdown to kickoff. You know, it's always interesting to me, Seamus,
where it's so different than the NFL when you see
a point spread that's forty and a half, you know
what I mean, Delaware State in Hawaii. What is your
process like when you see like an SMU Nevada point

(01:01:07):
spread that's twenty seven and a half, and that's so
drastically different than the NFL. How what's your general approach
when you go handicapping those type of lines.

Speaker 13 (01:01:17):
It's just so many schools, there's so many players that
play Division one college football, there's going to be these
big gaps and talent, especially in games like Hawaii and
Delaware State too. Like, it's pretty surprising to see a
school like that go all the way up to Hawaii
this early in the season. But I mean it's we
treat it the same as any other thing that we handicap.

(01:01:38):
You know, we see where the market is, we make
an opinion on it, we hang a number, we take that.

Speaker 4 (01:01:43):
Yeah, it's funny because one of the first conversations I
have with a book maker in this industry when I
broke in, I was asking, Hey, what's the toughest sport
to book? And he said, the early season college basketball
games keep me up at night. And this is kind
of the same approach, like good luck naming one player
on State, good luck maybe one player on Hawaii. Yet
you've got to hang a number, and you've got to

(01:02:04):
let the market decide, and it's usually the sharp players,
I think, right, Shamus, that kind of guide you when
you get these crazy games with one team that's up
here and the other team that's down there. You do
your best to put the number up, and then you
move it really fast when you start to.

Speaker 13 (01:02:17):
Get that action exactly, especially when you look at you know,
I just brought up a team like Florida and m
They had to bring in a bunch of transfers. They
might be very talented, but that offense has to click
week one. Defense has to be bought in week sorry,
week zero rather, and so we got a you know,
it's it's just like college basketball. How many minutes are

(01:02:37):
these guys going to play? Where did they play last year?
How are they going to fit on this team?

Speaker 6 (01:02:41):
It's just like that Seamus you know, based on that
NFL preseason question, kind of the same question for college
football during week zero or even week one, where it's
the first action, do you feel like betters have an
edge on the books if they follow the team closely
As a result of what Yared was talking about, because
so many new faces on a lot of these teams,

(01:03:04):
some of these teams have upward of sixty new players
into their program because of the transfer portal and player movement,
because of nil and all the things that we know,
is it easier for a better to have an edge
this time of year? As opposed to say Week four
of the regular season.

Speaker 13 (01:03:22):
Certainly, this is the time you definitely want to try
to beat the number is early in the season. This
is where the game of cat and mouse comes to
play between the bookmaker and the better where we got
to try to stay on top of information as much
as the betters do. So I think definitely this is
the time of year you can have an advantage over
the opts maker because there's so much uncertainty that comes
into play earlier in the year, you.

Speaker 5 (01:03:44):
Know, Seamus, I was just thinking before you go. Jared
just said this, good luck naming a team, naming a
player on Hawaii or Delaware State, And I.

Speaker 3 (01:03:53):
Was just thinking about that.

Speaker 5 (01:03:55):
Do you at least need to know the nickname of
the team on them?

Speaker 3 (01:04:00):
Is that a prerequisite or no? In your book?

Speaker 13 (01:04:04):
Absolutely not. I mean I'm just a three books all
these and sixty five college basketball teams, but absolutely not.
I'm betting League two English soccer right now. Yeah, I
can tell you a player on any of the team.

Speaker 4 (01:04:19):
The only thing I can tell you about Delaware State
is that the state of Delaware has no sales tax.
That's where my knowledge of Delaware ends.

Speaker 3 (01:04:25):
Go go Hornets.

Speaker 6 (01:04:27):
Hey, yeah, you know you feel better about yourself, you know,
just quick google searcher.

Speaker 5 (01:04:34):
Well, hey Seamus, we're glad that ball is back and
we're so happy that you are back as well.

Speaker 3 (01:04:39):
Man always get hanging with you. Hope you have a
great morning and a great day.

Speaker 13 (01:04:43):
Great thanks for having me, guys, m.

Speaker 3 (01:04:48):
The Rattlers. I just looked that up too, Shure.

Speaker 5 (01:04:51):
I learned something that Seamous McGee, team lead of sports
trading at bet MGM.

Speaker 3 (01:04:56):
Okay, we go from heavy hitter to heavy hitter. Huh.

Speaker 5 (01:04:58):
We go from Seamus to Isaac Low and Krawn a
one to two punch that pleases America.

Speaker 3 (01:05:04):
I Low with the latest.

Speaker 10 (01:05:06):
I that's my greeting because today in Dublin, Ireland.

Speaker 4 (01:05:13):
See, I'm out.

Speaker 10 (01:05:14):
To be honest. All this is just to annoy Rich Hornberg.
How am I doing?

Speaker 2 (01:05:18):
Rich?

Speaker 6 (01:05:18):
You're really telling it this morning? It's got it, got
it down.

Speaker 10 (01:05:23):
On the plus side, I will be relaying the Padre
score from last night for you coming up. Yes, we're
just an hour and a half away from the college
football season kicking off and Dublin, Ireland tenth rank Florida
State against Georgia Tech last night domestically in Major League Baseball,
show Hey O'tani reached the forty forty club. In typical show,

(01:05:45):
Hey Otani fashion fortieth stolen base in the bottom of
the fourth inning and then in the bottom of the
ninth inning the game winning grand slam for his fortieth
home run to beat the Tampa bay Rays sevent to three,
Otani becoming the fastest in Major league history to reach
the forty forty club. Speaking of the Padres, yes, they
shut out the Mets on Friday Night seven and nothing.

(01:06:05):
Joe Musgrove struck out nine, allowed just one hit and
seven innings for the win. Mariners won Dan Wilson's debut
as their manager the best of the San Francisco Giants
in ten innings, six to five. Aaron Judge his major
league leading forty ninth home run in the yankees three
to nothing win over the Colorado Rockies finally fellas in
Minor League baseball on Friday night. You know, while most

(01:06:28):
teams have bat boys for the last thirteen years, the
single A Clearwater Florida Thrashers have utilized a bat dog. Well,
last night they debuted a new bat dog.

Speaker 11 (01:06:45):
Unfortunately, the new.

Speaker 10 (01:06:47):
Bat dog got a little too excited for its debut.
Instead of retreating the bat, the dog ran wildly all
over the field, punctuating it by relieving itself on the
infield grass. And how can I put this delicately in
the scorebook, It went as two on a shuck to

(01:07:12):
you guys.

Speaker 5 (01:07:13):
Yes, I mean boy, I sid it was in the
grass though, right like it wasn't on the pictures mound
or a base, you know.

Speaker 3 (01:07:21):
So it's not all bad.

Speaker 5 (01:07:23):
It is Fox Sports Radio, So down Down to Kickoff,

Speaker 4 (01:07:59):
I know, I was thinking when I watched that story yesterday.
That's what I was thinking about to him Ryan, because
we can go down rambunctious.

Speaker 5 (01:08:05):
He would very dicey road of Yeah, where's the most
interesting spot?

Speaker 3 (01:08:10):
Jackpot is relieved himself.

Speaker 4 (01:08:12):
You know, do you remember the one of the first
weeks we did the show.

Speaker 3 (01:08:15):
Oh my gosh, yeah, yeah, he.

Speaker 4 (01:08:18):
Looked me right in the eyes. This is right during
the rapid Fire segment. He looked me right in the
eyes and was like, I'm sorry, bro, this is happening
right now. We did Actually it wasn't during rapid Fire.
I think it was in the second hour. I did
a whole hour of the show with just really bad
things like defecating itself right near me. Oh man, So yeah,

(01:08:39):
in this apartment there has been incidents.

Speaker 3 (01:08:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:08:42):
It makes me think of one of my buddies, mister
freaking Zanchelli, one of my guys in Albany, and his
dog Odell. You know, he's a big Giants fan, so
his dog named his dog's name is Odell. But anytime
Odell would go to the bonos in his place.

Speaker 3 (01:08:58):
He'd go what did you do? What did you do?
And this dog would just be like, I'm I know,
I suld oh, so I'm sorry father.

Speaker 5 (01:09:08):
Right, Okay, So not great news for a couple of
NFL teams at the quarterback position. So this is, first off,
the Browns. I mean, it's fitting with what we've just
been talking about. But the Browns they have an issue
with Deshaun watson arm soreness this week, been held out

(01:09:28):
of practice a couple of times. Kevin Stefanski, the head coach,
says he's not overly concerned. If I'm a Browns fan
and they say, hey, Deshaun Watson has a hangnail.

Speaker 3 (01:09:39):
I'm like, oh my gosh, what more can go wrong?

Speaker 5 (01:09:43):
He's played in twelve of a possible thirty five games
since joining the Browns, and a lot of that was
the suspension, which we knew was going to happen.

Speaker 3 (01:09:53):
But twelve games out.

Speaker 5 (01:09:55):
Of thirty five, a lot of that was last year
being banged up, you know. So that's the first first
part of it. And you look at the lack of
production with the Browns. Deshaun Watson has thrown fourteen touchdown
passes in nine interceptions for two hundred and thirty million
dollars guaranteed. So something to keep your eye on with
the arm soreness. The other story was Colts quarterback Anthony

(01:10:16):
Richardson didn't exactly crush it against the Bengals in the
preseason game or during joint practices during the week. There
was a report by James Boyd of The Athletic where
in the joint practice the Bengals.

Speaker 3 (01:10:30):
Are talking trash. Right.

Speaker 5 (01:10:32):
You had Bengals cornerback cam Taylor britt and he was like, is.

Speaker 3 (01:10:38):
That all he does is run? Is what he said.

Speaker 4 (01:10:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:10:41):
The defensive tackle bj hill yell at Richardson throw the ball,
bro and then he threw an interception, and Bengals safety
Geno Stone was saying, he just he's just throwing the spots.

Speaker 3 (01:10:52):
He doesn't even see his receivers.

Speaker 5 (01:10:55):
And then he went out there a rich did in
the preseason game and errant throws just not on target.
Not a good look.

Speaker 4 (01:11:04):
Man.

Speaker 5 (01:11:04):
Here's the quick thing I want to say is there's
such a laser focus and fascination with the upside with
certain quarterbacks. Oh the upside the ceiling, right, It's like, dude,
there's a downside and there's the floor as well. There
are a couple of quarterbacks where there are gonna be
a lot of growing things. With Anthony Richardson, who didn't

(01:11:26):
play a lot in college, who only threw eighty four
passes last year with the Colts, and you're seeing that man,
you can't be inaccurate with the football, can't do it.

Speaker 3 (01:11:35):
And that's exactly what.

Speaker 4 (01:11:37):
He is right now.

Speaker 6 (01:11:38):
Yeah, because those are mistakes. Those are considered mistakes at
the NFL level. At the collegiate level, you will excuse
certain errant throws because if you're an electric enough athlete,
you can make up.

Speaker 3 (01:11:49):
For a lot of that with your legs.

Speaker 6 (01:11:51):
And also the defenses aren't as good, so you can
miss the spot and still get still convert completions. Not
in the you miss your spot, it's going the other
way for six. That's how that game works because the
margin ferrera is so slim. You know, when you look
at what you just said, Kirk Cousins, Alex Smith, Jimmy Garoppolo,

(01:12:12):
you know, to a greater or lesser extent, Dak Prescott,
you can be a middle tier quarterback or a second
tier quarterback and have a long and great career and
make a ton of money. And the reason why dependability
and the ability to lead a team and to read
a defense and complete throws and be clutch when the
moment calls for you to be clutch. Those are important factors.

(01:12:34):
Joe Flacco last year emerged as one of the better
quarterbacks down the stretch of the season. Why because of
all those things I just said, dependability, mistake, free football.
That's how the Browns ended up playing into the postseason
because he helped lead the way. And oddly enough, guess
who's backing up Anthony Richardson this year Joe Flacco. So

(01:12:58):
I wouldn't be completely shocked if this lack of.

Speaker 3 (01:13:01):
Confidence in his arm continues.

Speaker 6 (01:13:04):
If he struggles out the gate with confidence backing you up,
we could see a re emergence of Flacco. And oddly
you brought off both of the teams that he most
recently played for, because he went from the Browns where
he was filling in for an injured Deshaun Watson, you
know after you know, four other quarterbacks got the call

(01:13:24):
as well before Flacco to the Colts. So yeah, I'm
very curious to see what happens with the Browns and Deshaun,
but almost more so with Anthony Richardson because he was
a high round draft pick last year and it doesn't
sound like it's going well.

Speaker 4 (01:13:38):
Yeah, I'm very barish on the Browns because of Watson.
The contract is absurd. It's literally an albatross, and he
has yet to produce a positive efficiency rating in any
of his time season long efficiency rating with his time
with Cleveland sixteen total touchdowns in two years. In twenty
twenty three alone, twenty three quarter eclipsed sixteen touchdowns, and

(01:14:02):
that's how many he's had combined total in his tenure,
if you want to even call it that with Cleveland.
In addition to whatever soreness or injuries or inefficiencies he's shown,
he has to also learn a new offense, a very
up tempo kind of run and gun style offense. Ken Dorsey,

(01:14:22):
of course, last year with the Bills comes in. He's
the new oc here in Cleveland. They like to throw
the football. Nobody threw it more deep, more deeply, Nobody
threw it deeper speak Jared than Buffalo did last year Cleveland.
Cleveland also was a deep was a deep ball team
last year. And now they get Dorsey, Who's gonna, you know,
open up this offense even more so? What are the

(01:14:45):
two worst things that you could possibly have at quarterback
when you've got an offensive coordinator that wants to push
the ball down the field, arm strength, well, arm soreness already,
you know, popping up here on the injury list. We're
not even in a week one yet. And decision making
because if you make a bad disci throwing the ball
down the field, that free safety's coming over and he's
gonna act like it's a punt and fair catch it

(01:15:05):
for an interception. So you just you've got to clean
up these things at the quarterback position, because, let's be honest, guys,
Joe Flacco last year proved if you're even average at
quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, you're gonna make the playoffs.
That's all good. The defense is.

Speaker 5 (01:15:21):
That's the voice of Jared Smith FSR betting analyst whose
dog's name is Jackpot. We've got rich Orenberger, Penn State,
all American.

Speaker 6 (01:15:29):
You have a dog right now, Rich, Yeah, lady, she's
in an eight pound Italian greyhound who's oh wow, blind
and toothless and fifteen years old.

Speaker 3 (01:15:38):
Oh my goodness wow. All right, yeah, ladies, hanging on though,
man lady is kicking. She is a good girl. She's
a very good girl.

Speaker 5 (01:15:47):
I'm Brian though, currently dogless, but shout out to Amigo,
my Australian shepherd from yesteryear, who was awesome.

Speaker 4 (01:15:55):
I thought you were a cat guy these days.

Speaker 5 (01:15:57):
Well, we were babysitting cats the last couple of summers. Yeah,
so no dog guy, but I dabble with cats as well,
because I love those suckers, you know. Shout out to
Coop and Tiger, who we were babysitting the last three
years for sure. All right, coming up next, it is
our bonding portion of the show. Prop It Up, the
prop bet market. We will decipher, we will look, we

(01:16:19):
will dissect.

Speaker 3 (01:16:20):
That is on the way.

Speaker 5 (01:16:21):
It's Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff presented by BETMGM.
It is Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff presented by

(01:16:43):

all five of your team's cover and you're eligible to
win betmgm's weekly jackpot.

Speaker 3 (01:16:53):
All right, let's do this.

Speaker 2 (01:16:56):
Prop it Up plays.

Speaker 5 (01:16:59):
Ah, Yes, Paul is back. The prop bets are back
as well. Jared we'll start with you. What do you
have circled today?

Speaker 4 (01:17:05):
Yeah, we talked about it earlier, Brian, I'm probably pretty
sure you're gonna be on the same page. But Dju
under two thirty and a half passing yards. I saw
two twenty five out there. I'd go under that number
as well. So he's gone under two thirty and a
half in twenty eight of thirty seven career games. For
his career, he's averaging less than two hundred yards passing
per game. I don't think Florida State has any incentive

(01:17:26):
to show much this week. Granted they're not as big
of a favorite as some of the other FBS teams
playing today, but they should be able to handle this
game without giving you the full complement of weapons, in
the full complement of offensive firepower here. And also they're
replacing a lot red receiver. I mean, go look in
the draft and what Florida State did in terms of

(01:17:48):
their receiving group, a lot of new faces. It might
take some time to Jael. I think this is going
to be more of a running game, So we'll go
under two thirty and a half for DJU.

Speaker 6 (01:17:56):
All right, I'm looking at the other side of this
matchup Georgia tech side specifically one player in the running game,
Jamal Haynes, who returns for the Yellow Jackets. If you
look at his stats from twenty twenty three, throwing him.

Speaker 3 (01:18:10):
The football is not a big part of the game.

Speaker 6 (01:18:12):
He only had twenty receptions last year for just over
one hundred and fifty yards. So I'm gonna take the
under on the one and a half receptions for Haynes
and the under on the thirteen and a half receiving yards.

Speaker 3 (01:18:23):
He'll get his on the ground.

Speaker 6 (01:18:24):
He averages over six yards per carry in twenty twenty
three for.

Speaker 3 (01:18:28):
The Yellow Jackets.

Speaker 6 (01:18:29):
He's a little ball of dynamite, but he doesn't have
great hands, so they don't trust him in the passing
game all that much. So again under one and a
half receptions and under thirteen and a half receiving yards
for Jamal Haynes.

Speaker 5 (01:18:41):
Yeah, I'm with you, Jared, not that I'm not with you, Rich,
but I had the same thing. Has circled with dj
Oui under to twenty five and a half at bet MGM.
I also like an over here Lawrence to aphee lea
listen man forty and a half rushing yards that is
really low. And I know, listen, there are a lot

(01:19:03):
of really solid running backs for Florida State. Especially a
game like this against Georgia Tech. It's gonna be a
share the wealth type game. You're not gonna have just
bell Cow, but Toafeely he's gonna be their main guy.

Speaker 3 (01:19:17):
And ask yourself this, how many carries would it take
him to get to over forty and a half rushing yards.

Speaker 5 (01:19:24):
I don't think it's gonna take that many because Georgia
Tech's rush defense was freaking brutal last season. I don't
see them making great strides. So I will hop on
the over forty and a half for Toea Feely as
well as the under and passing yards with DJU.

Speaker 3 (01:19:40):
Jared, what was the stat you said?

Speaker 5 (01:19:41):
I know you said under in twenty eight of thirty
seven games career wise for DJU, But what was the
threshold passing yards?

Speaker 4 (01:19:48):
The average one ninety five per game. I mean, this
is not a quarterback that they've relied on at any
stop to be this, you know, spread it out running
gun passer. I think the offense gonna be a lot
different this year. Roy De Williams's numbers hovering in the
high sixties. I got sixty eight and a half. I
think there's a seventy probably out there. This is, of course,
the other running back for Florida State. In Georgia Tech.

(01:20:10):
They allowed the fourth most rushing yards in the country
last year. And Williams gets five yards of carry, gets
fifteen carries, he should easily get the seventy yards on
the dead.

Speaker 5 (01:20:18):
Yeah, okay, we're just gonna parlay all this stuff together.

Speaker 4 (01:20:22):
Let's do it.

Speaker 2 (01:20:22):
It sounds good to me.

Speaker 3 (01:20:25):
I didn't have to dug you guys into anything. Ready
to go? All right?

Speaker 5 (01:20:29):
Coming up next, I need just one minute of your
time to whine.

Speaker 3 (01:20:35):
Oh, happy Saturday to you.

Speaker 5 (01:20:37):
We are less than one hour away from kickoff number
ten Florida State against Georgia Tech. Paul is back, baby.
We're all excited. But here's the thing, guys, I just
need one minute. Okay, I want to cap myself because
I could go on for thirteen minutes.

Speaker 4 (01:20:53):
Easy, take a breath, bud on safe space.

Speaker 5 (01:20:57):
Okay, we know it's weeks zero. Okay week. You know
day of the week is spelled w E E K. Right,
I spell week zero w e A K because this
slate is freaking trash over you are you kidding me?

Speaker 3 (01:21:14):
Every single year? Why does college football do this? Why?
Why do you start off with dog matchups? Now?

Speaker 5 (01:21:23):
Listen, Florida State against Georgia Tech is at least okay,
that's an okay matchup.

Speaker 3 (01:21:28):
But the rest of the slate, guys, we got like
FCS teams, We got Nevada.

Speaker 5 (01:21:34):
Nevada is in like its own window in primetime against
same Why can't we do better than this? The NFL
would never do something like this. This would be I
try to think of the NFL equivalent of this Florida
State Georgia Tech game, which is at least okay, that's
an okay matchup.

Speaker 3 (01:21:54):
And listen, I get it.

Speaker 5 (01:21:56):
We are starving for ball, or like we're starving for
a meal and someone handed us like stale ramen noodles
and we're.

Speaker 3 (01:22:02):
Like, any take it.

Speaker 2 (01:22:03):
We'll tell you anything good.

Speaker 3 (01:22:05):
We need something in my system.

Speaker 5 (01:22:06):
But what would be the NFL equivalent of Florida State
Georgia Tech? I said, it'd be something like a borderline
top ten NFL team, say like the Browns against What
would a Georgia Tech be? Like an average no juice Jaguars,
Maybe the Jags, or that's a good one. Brown's Jacks,
welcome back. The NFL is here. No, they give us

(01:22:29):
Ravens Chiefs right out of the gate.

Speaker 3 (01:22:33):
Why can't college football, dude?

Speaker 5 (01:22:35):
Why why not rant over? I know we're excited for ball.
I don't want to pooh pooh the party over here,
but man, can we not do better than this?

Speaker 3 (01:22:45):
It would be like.

Speaker 6 (01:22:48):
Who was just on the outside looking in last year's
playoff season in the NFL, like the Colts. The Colts
came down the wire. It would be like the Colts
versus I don't know, then to kick off the season
like kind of a kind of like one of those
bottom dwelling teams in their division versus a team that

(01:23:08):
was just out on. Look, there's interest in Georgia Tech.
I'm with you there. Florida State just miss the playoffs,
so we have storylines and like you said, we're desperate
for action. But I agree, I think college football does
itself a disservice in a lot of different ways at times. Overall,

(01:23:28):
I like the product obviously, I think that they get
a lot right. But compared to the NFL, who appears
to dominate and lean into every moment, it feels like
other sports leagues struggle with this.

Speaker 3 (01:23:42):
I would be on the horn.

Speaker 6 (01:23:43):
I'd be burning up the phone lines offering all sorts
of incentives to schools that are willing to put themselves
out there and play on week zero to make this
the seminal event, because it really does, at least for now,
peer like the NFL is getting out of the way
for weeks zero or week one of the college football season.

Speaker 3 (01:24:02):
So if you play your card right, if.

Speaker 6 (01:24:04):
You aim for that preseason bye week, you could dominate
at least for one week over an NFL weekend.

Speaker 4 (01:24:11):
You know, so you're not excited for that Delaware State
Hawaii game at midnight Eastern later tonight. No one's really
jacked up for that. By the way, I was gonna
give out the under fifty five and a half in
that game. A little later, it's down to fifty three
and a half.

Speaker 3 (01:24:25):
Now, I hate when that happens.

Speaker 4 (01:24:26):
I know it happens all the time. But here's the thing.
Here's my theory, and you guys are right. The other
sports besides the NFL suck at this. Major League Baseball
is the worst. They open their season in Korea during
March Madness in the cover of darkness. It was like
nobody knew. But you look at what these teams are

(01:24:49):
and you talk about the length of the season for
college football, and it is I know it's not as
long as the NFL, but it's long. And these kids,
they get tired, they have a lot, and they're basically teenagers.
My theory is week zero offers no upside for a
team to go all in, and I have data to

(01:25:12):
back this up. Over the last two seasons, teams that
play in Week zero are five and thirteen against the
spread when they play in Week one against the team
that hasn't played yet. And we've talked about this before
because conventional wisdom says, oh, you get that game under
your belt early, you get lathered up, you're ready to

(01:25:33):
go for Week one. But no, you know why because
all the Week one coaches that aren't playing today, they're
on their couch with their notepad and they are watching
everything you do in week zero. There is no advantage
to playing in week zero and showing your hand early
and allowing the coaches that aren't playing this week, which

(01:25:54):
are many, to collect all of this extra information. And
let's be honest, week zero not a number so this
week really doesn't exist, and I don't think there's any
incentive for these coaches to book these high profile games
in this week.

Speaker 3 (01:26:10):
I hear you.

Speaker 5 (01:26:11):
But we could go back and look closer at those
numbers and who were the teams that played in Week zero?

Speaker 3 (01:26:17):
Might not have been that great, just like I don't
know today's slight, you.

Speaker 5 (01:26:21):
Know what I'm saying, Like, like, I'll give you an example.
Next week, Week one, Clemson takes on Georgia.

Speaker 4 (01:26:28):
Let's go.

Speaker 5 (01:26:29):
That's a game, okay, that's number fourteen against number one.
Even next Sunday night, USC against LSU, that's a game, okay.
Like if those teams are playing in week zero, if
that's the game Clemson and Georgia, that is a way
to kick off a freaking season right there. You could
have weeks months of anticipation for that game. This one

(01:26:53):
was like, oh hey, by the way, Florida State plays
Georgia Tech, it's like, oh, awesome, ball is back. There
weren't weeks of van anticipation for that and Georgia if
they played in Week zero, they'd be like, hey, study
all you want, it's not gonna matter. Okay, We're gonna
roll you. In Week one if they happen to play
in Week zero, I just look, man, the NFL has

(01:27:15):
it right. And I don't know why college football won't
look to the NFL, or, to your point, Jared, major
league baseball won't look at the NFL and say.

Speaker 3 (01:27:22):
They figured this out.

Speaker 5 (01:27:23):
It's like ball is back Ravens Chiefs, Oh, we're gonna
hitch you the next day in Brazil with Packers Eagles. Yeah,
it's a really good week one full Sunday slate primetime
Stafford goes back to the Lions, Rams, Lions, and then
Monday Night Jets Niners.

Speaker 3 (01:27:40):
Wow, what more could you ask for? Today? We've got
the Hornets of bellows.

Speaker 13 (01:27:49):
Us.

Speaker 3 (01:27:50):
Come on.

Speaker 6 (01:27:51):
Well, I will say this, the Rainbow Warriors. They cover
these week zeros a lot, even these insanely long point
spread So.

Speaker 3 (01:28:00):
I don't know, man, I'm with you.

Speaker 6 (01:28:02):
I think that college football needs to tear that that
front page out of the NFL's playbook, which is, Hey,
anywhere we can find a weekend to win or a
week to win, we're gonna go and win it. And
I think that this preseason bye week isn't going away,

(01:28:23):
even if they expand the regular season to eighteen games,
and I know that the concentration and the focus is, hey,
where are we going to place this this college football
playoff in terms of the months and the days. And
you know they want to get all that scheduling logistically
hammered out. But don't don't give up on week zero
just to make all that right on the back end

(01:28:45):
included into the package. Think about it, place it correctly,
because again, if you get a bunch of those teams
to your point, Brian like to play on Week zero
important games, and you go ahead and you schedule it
for the NFL preseason bye week where everybody pulls their
attention away from the NFL for a moment to take

(01:29:05):
a deep breath before we go in for the eighteen
game or seventeen game this year regular season. Man, you
could win, You could win huge. And the NFL does that.
They find weeks to win. You can find a week
to win. If you're college football, you just have to
be a little bit more careful with your scheduling.

Speaker 4 (01:29:21):
Rich if you were a player, let's say you're on
Penn State this year, or you're on Ohio State, you know,
high achieving team, would you be jacked up? Would you
be Notre Dame, would you be jacked up for a
week zero game against Delaware State like you would be
in Week one? Like does it matter to you that
you're playing the first time out of the gate instead

(01:29:43):
of getting that extra week? Like I feel like, as
a player and as a coach, you want the extra week, right.

Speaker 3 (01:29:48):
You would prefer the extra week to prepare.

Speaker 6 (01:29:51):
Now, if you're Penn State and they scheduled Ohio State, yeah,
in week zero, Or if you're Notre Dame and you're
scheduled against out Alabama, Yeah, I mean like yeah, well,
then all of a sudden, you're like, oh my gosh,
this may echo and reverberate for the rest of our season.
So ready or not, we are fire. We have to

(01:30:12):
be firing on all cylinders right out the gate. But yeah,
for you know, if you're at Penn State and you're
you're warming up with you know the akron Z.

Speaker 4 (01:30:20):
Yeah, it was always Akron or Toledo one of those
mac teams.

Speaker 3 (01:30:23):
Yeah, Toledo or Temple or you know.

Speaker 6 (01:30:26):
I mean like you you you would go out there
and you would have this feeling of like, Okay, we're
gonna roll them, and then what's next?

Speaker 3 (01:30:33):
Like, you know, it's just that's the feeling.

Speaker 6 (01:30:35):
And so you know, for all these schools who are
playing cupcake matchups, and that's not to diminish Delaware State.
I'm sure the Hornets have a great roster this year and.

Speaker 5 (01:30:44):
Oh yeah, coming off a one to ten solid season, man,
they should rip it up this year.

Speaker 6 (01:30:49):
Right, But you know what, you know, a lot of
people just they they forget that things don't stagnate. All
those players are going to get better in year two
on that roster. So you know what ten and one
this year, Rich, we're looking at, Yeah, we're looking at yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:31:01):
The inverse.

Speaker 6 (01:31:03):
It's going to be one of those games for Hawaii
or even to a greater or lesser extent for Florida State,
where you know you're looking at this. There's excitement being
in Dublin for the seminoles, for the yell Jackets, but
outside of that, really what you would rather is having
an extra week to prepare instead of having to play

(01:31:25):
this game in weeks Eero.

Speaker 5 (01:31:26):
I'll give you a positive thing here, Okay, I am
so excited for this college football season because the twelve
team playoffs the first year for that.

Speaker 3 (01:31:37):
One of the reasons I'm so excited.

Speaker 5 (01:31:38):
It's a great stat In the ten years of the
four team playoff, just fifteen schools made the college football Playoff,
and it's obviously a lot different. Now we've got a
group of five that's destined for the twelve team playoff.

Speaker 3 (01:31:53):
They've got to see it at the table.

Speaker 5 (01:31:55):
So we're gonna get some teams that have probably never
made the college football play before. Certainly, you know, group
of five that's part of the mix. So I think
that's awesome. And I read something I skimmed through it.
There was a column from Heather Dnich from ESPN. She
does a great job, and she wrote about potential matchups

(01:32:15):
in the playoff and it was like number eleven Penn
State against number six Oregon and then number ten Miami
against number seven Notre Dame.

Speaker 3 (01:32:26):
Think about that.

Speaker 5 (01:32:27):
That would be at Notre Dame on their college campus
and reviving the old rivalry from the Catholics versus Convicts era,
and that would be amazing for college football. So I
am really excited for the season as a whole. I
wish we could be more excited for Week zero, but
they're just not sexy matchups.

Speaker 3 (01:32:48):
But just you wait because there are going to be.

Speaker 5 (01:32:52):
And I just wish the last little thing that's on
my wish list as a college football junkie, I wish
it was a again like the NFL. I wish every
playoff game except for the championship were on college campuses.
It would be so much better than playing at neutral sites.
Aside from the first week of the playoff. Like you,

(01:33:15):
that's your incentive to keep winning and to be one
of the highest seeds.

Speaker 3 (01:33:18):
You keep playing at home throughout the playoff.

Speaker 5 (01:33:21):
I wish they would ditch the bowls within the college
football playoff structure. It'd be so much better.

Speaker 3 (01:33:25):
I completely agree.

Speaker 6 (01:33:26):
I think if you expand the playoff further, get rid
of more bowl games, people will enjoy the sport more
because what March madness has done to college basketball you
could do for college football. It doesn't have to be
sixty four teams. It doesn't have to be. I wouldn't
hate it. I know we've had that argument before, but

(01:33:47):
it doesn't have to be. It could be thirty two,
it could be it could be sixteen. I think there's
more room than twelve. I think this is gonna work gangbusters,
and I think that as a result, what you just said.

Speaker 3 (01:33:59):
Is it's true?

Speaker 6 (01:34:00):
You could have corporate sponsors attached to every single one
of these bowl games, or pitbull or whatever musical artists
or Gronk can sponsor whatever quarterfinal round he wants or
they want, or you know, IBM or Mac or Mobile
x on they can sponsor bulls or tostitos whoever, or
I should say, or these playoff games or whoever wants to.

(01:34:23):
And so everybody's still gonna make money. Everything is going
to be just fine. You could still play some of
these playoff games in the Rose Bowl and some of
these hollowed grounds for the postseason of college football yesteryear.
All of those boxes can be checked. Will be different, yeah.
Will it be mimicking March Madness a little bit, Yeah, sure,
But people like March madness and when it works, it works,

(01:34:46):
And I think it could work for college football and
these players since they are professional athletes. Now we're talking
about guys who can cash in on their name, image
and likeness. I don't think you're gonna get a lot
of players complaining about how much extra wear and tear
goes in on their bodies, because some of these guys
are going to be able to make a down payment
on a house after one season in college football. So

(01:35:08):
I think we're, like I said before, we're checking a
lot of boxes already, but you could check a whole
bunch more and it's just a matter of building toward that.
I think this is a great step expanding it to twelve,
and I'm super pumped like you are. And I think
that there's even room for more improvement as the years
roll on.

Speaker 4 (01:35:26):
I could see it now, the Pit Bowl sponsored by Jackpot.

Speaker 3 (01:35:29):
I love it. I mean, there's just.

Speaker 4 (01:35:31):
So many opportunities now. The expansion in college football is inevitable.
We talked about it last year. Change you have to
be comfortable being uncomfortable. The one thing that I think
is really important this year is just to kind of
see how the process develops. And a lot of the
really smart people that I trust when it comes to
gambling and making bets, they are very selective early on

(01:35:53):
in a college football season. I know that's when you
technically have the most advantage because the sportsbooks also don't
know as much about the teams. But we're also at
that disadvantage. I think slow playing the college football season,
getting invested slowly, and then really hitting your stride come
Week four, Week five, Week six, as we kind of
get to that end. But the biggest question this year

(01:36:16):
is you change the no nominator with how many teams
that get in. There will be some teams that just
punt on games because you know, like, hey, we can
still get into the playoff even if we lose this game.
I'm not saying teams are not going to be prepared
and not going to try to play hard, but there
might come a point where if it's the third or
fourth quarter of a Week two game and you're getting
your butt kicked, all right, let's maybe not empty the

(01:36:40):
tank and try to come back here. We're probably not
going to win this game, but we can still reach
our goal of making the playoff if we win the
next game. And how do we win the next game, Well,
we make sure we don't, you know, put all of
our pieces out in this game where we're probably gonna
lose anyway. So again, those are just little things. As
we go on through the course of the season, we'll
see kind of how teams handle the ebbs and flows.

(01:37:00):
Because collegroawall used to be a roller coaster, right, you're
going up slow, you're going up slower, going up slow.
If you lose one game, that's it, boom done. Now
you can go through one loss, you can go through
a dip, and then you could slowly climb the ladder
again and you could still make the Culturwell Playoff even
with two losses. I would be shocked if there's a
three loss team in the SEC this year that makes

(01:37:20):
the Culturalwell Playoffs. So it just it changes the math.
It changes the way we view these teams, and I
think it's gonna change the week to week grind as
we know it.

Speaker 5 (01:37:29):
It is funny how the math has completely changed. And
the team that was the on the outside looking in
was Florida State last season and that's the first game
of this season. Yeah right, Like it's just funny how
that came together. But they'd be invited to the playoff
this year the fifth that's just the way it goes.
All right, We've got Rich Hornberger, Penn State All American,
Jared Smith FSR, betting analyst.

Speaker 3 (01:37:50):
I'm Brian No coming up next.

Speaker 4 (01:37:52):
Are you all.

Speaker 3 (01:37:53):
Aboard this hype train?

Speaker 5 (01:37:56):
It is Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff, presented by
bet MGM. It is Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff,

(01:38:37):
is going through Denver right now. Bo Nicks named QB one.
I gotta give a shout out my guy, Nate Brown.
He hosts a local Fox Sports radio show in Rapid City,
South Dakota, and he'll have me on as a guest
from time to time. And the first question this week
he says, are you a bowliever?

Speaker 3 (01:38:57):
And I'm like, I love it. That creates get out
of here.

Speaker 5 (01:39:01):
But Bo Nick's a seventy seven percent completion rate in
the preseason, He's tossed a couple of touchdown passes. He's
looked good and some people are really really excited, and
that's fine, but this is mostly against backups, you know
what I mean. I think the hype train in general
is really interesting. Take last night Jacksonville. Their number one

(01:39:23):
offense carved up the Falcons and their backup defense. Trevor
Lawrence looked really good. Is anybody today saying, hey Trevor Lawrence,
look out MVP Odds?

Speaker 3 (01:39:33):
I'll just saying, look look at what he did. Let No,
no one's doing that.

Speaker 5 (01:39:37):
So when it comes to a rookie, I just think
it's really interesting, or the hype train goes crazy, and
they're doing this against mostly backup defensive guys. I just
got to see it against starters to truly buy in.

Speaker 3 (01:39:50):
It doesn't make me a hater. I just I'm not
as easily as impressed.

Speaker 5 (01:39:54):
If you're not impressed with Trevor Lawrence, why would you
be foaming at the mouth or drooling at the mouth
when it to bow Nicks.

Speaker 3 (01:40:01):
Doesn't add up.

Speaker 6 (01:40:02):
I think the NFL has a quarterback issue because quarterbacks
are getting younger and younger, less and less experienced as
they make their way into the NFL. And you see
what experience gets you. Sometimes not all the time, but sometimes.
Rock Purdy was the last pick of the NFL draft
when he came out of college, but he played all

(01:40:22):
those years at Iowa State, all those bowl games, and
that experience paid off for him. He has quickly become
one of the more dependable quarterbacks in the NFL. Now
he has hitched his trailer to one of the best
rosters in the NFL with one of the best coaches
in the NFL. But he's made some big boy throws
in some big boy moments, and so in year two,
going into year three, now you can see that all

(01:40:45):
of that experience helps. We've seen the other side of
that coin, which is the guys like the Mitch Trubiskys
of the world, who after only twelve games playing at
the collegiate level, they come into the NFL as a
high draft pick, a first rounder, and they struggle. Same
thing with Trey Lance, who's now a backup with Dallas's

(01:41:07):
It does, it does shine through how much experience can
help a quarterback be a better decision maker at this level.
Bonnicks played a lot of college football, so I think
some of the hype could be real. Do the preseason
numbers impress me? Not all that much. What impresses me
is when you turn on those Broncos games, he looks composed.

(01:41:29):
He looks like he's communicating the offense. He doesn't look flustered.
He looks like, for example, the anti Bryce Young. Like
Bryce Young, everything looked really confused and discordinated last year
with the Carolina Panthers, even though he was the first
overall draft pick, Whereas if you look at CJ. Stroud,

(01:41:51):
everything looked like it was coming easier to him. Very
composed in the huddle, he was good leader, he exuded confidence.
Bonnicks is doing that year for Denver. I'm not saying
he's going to have a CJ. Stroud year, but he
at least he looks confident and comfortable in this offense.

Speaker 3 (01:42:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:42:09):
I don't think I'll have a CJ. Stroud year either.
I don't think Denver's defense is as good as the
Texans defense was last year. And they have an offensive
minded head coach who is very And that's why I
think bo Knicks will look better than we expect, because
he has an offensive minded head coach who knows how
to make it paint by numbers? What do I mean
by paint by numbers? Against the Packers, and again, Knicks

(01:42:30):
has looked good in the preseason. I don't want to
take anything away from his execution and comfort level in
the offense, but against the Packers, his average depth of
target was less than four yards. Of seventy four quarterbacks
that throw at least five passes in preseason week two,
Knicks ranked sixty eighth in a dot average depth of
target paint by numbers. Drop back, throw it right to

(01:42:52):
the guy at the line of scrimmage, first read, he's open,
get it out of your hands. There's negatives to that,
because we need to push the down the field if
we want to win in the NFL. If you do
not threaten the downfield pass, it allows defenses to just
sit and they can be flat footed and they can
attack the line of scrimmage. The upsides to it is

(01:43:12):
he's comfortable and he's having success, and success even in
small doses in the NFL leads to confidence. Confidence then
leads to hopefully and opening up of the playbook and
allowing bon Nicks to do more. Is that gonna happen
Week one? Probably not. Is it going to happen at
some point this season? If the Broncos want to go
over their win total and maybe make the playoffs. Yes,

(01:43:35):
it is going to have to be handcuffs off at
some point, But right now, when we're still in the
you know, the larva stage of what bon Nicks's career is,
I think it's okay for him to just be a
quick drop back passer, get the ball out of your hands,
get some completions, get some confidence, don't make the big mistake,
and then slowly build on what you would hope is

(01:43:58):
a successful season by you know, all all things being relative.

Speaker 3 (01:44:02):
By the way. You know, who never makes the big mistake.

Speaker 4 (01:44:06):
No, I know who's you're going here.

Speaker 5 (01:44:08):
I know, you know, for the people who don't know,
it is Isaac Loewen Krawn never makes the big mistake.

Speaker 3 (01:44:15):
I low with the latest.

Speaker 11 (01:44:16):
Oh, I'm feeling the pressure now.

Speaker 10 (01:44:20):
I feel like cal Ripken Game two, seven eight or whatever. Well, fellas,
I will try and live up to that very very
gracious introduction.

Speaker 11 (01:44:31):
Because we're less than half an hour away.

Speaker 10 (01:44:35):
Half an hour away a college football season kicking off
a Viva Stadium Dublin, Ireland, a matchup between tenth ranked
Florida State and Georgia Tech. And I want to try
and give you guys sample of some of the pregame
atmosphere at Aviva Stadium. A gentleman who I assume is

(01:44:58):
from Ireland, Diori mac diib, posting on social media a
complaint quote no Guinness zero point zero in west stand
bad show unquote. I know Guinness is of the beer,
but I don't know what zero point zero means a

(01:45:19):
zero calorie beer, I suppose, So yeah, that's what's going
on in the west stand. Meanwhile, let's check out another
concession stand. I'm going to read you some of the
items they have. A concession stand at a Viva stadium
in Dublin devoted just to donuts, including a salted caramel

(01:45:40):
donut for three seventy five euros and a cookies and
cream donut for just three three seventy five in euros.
How much would that have cost in an American sports
venue right? Probably eight ninety five per donut. So that's
what's going on as we anticipate the start of the
college football season.

Speaker 2 (01:46:00):
Now.

Speaker 10 (01:46:00):
In Major League Baseball, on Friday night, sho hey Otani
reached the forty forty club in show hey Otani like
fashion against the Tampa Bay Rays. He stole his fortieth
base of the season at the bottom of the fourth inning,
and then in the bottom of the ninth inning a
game winning grand slam for his fortieth home run of
the season to win the game seven to three. Otani

(01:46:22):
the fastest in Major League history to reach the forty
to forty club Mariners over the Giants and ten in
in six to five, Dan Wilson winning his debut of
Seattle's new manager Aaron Judges major league leading forty ninth
home run, and the Yankees three nothing went over Colorado.
And finally, all those stories pale in comparison to this.

Speaker 11 (01:46:40):
This is for you, Rich.

Speaker 3 (01:46:41):
Yeah, let's hear it.

Speaker 10 (01:46:42):
The San Diego Padres a seven to nothing victory over
the New York Mets, and it was Joe Muskrove allowing
just one hit in seven innings with nine strikeouts, making
Rich's day back to you.

Speaker 5 (01:46:55):
Hey, the last leg of the parlay last night, by
the way, so maybe Fadres.

Speaker 11 (01:47:00):
Yeah, everybody wins.

Speaker 3 (01:47:03):
Very nice shout out to Joe Muskrove. That was beautiful.
It is Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff, presented by
Bett MGM. We are twenty four.

Speaker 5 (01:47:12):
Minutes away from kickoff, and if we dive back into
the college football waters, if we look at.

Speaker 3 (01:47:19):
Coaches with the most to prove this season.

Speaker 5 (01:47:23):
At the top of my list, underlined, highlighted, circled many
times I circled it, Lefty. I'm a right, I circled it, Lefty.
That's how many times it's Ryan Day at Ohio State.
I mean, come on, this guy, talent all over this roster.
Beat Michigan, do something more in the playoff. There are

(01:47:44):
high expectations, and anything less could get him canned. Like
if he loses to Michigan, or he doesn't go all
the way at least to the championship game, he could
very well be out of a job. So I think
that Ryan Day, with as much talent at his disposal,
this is the gots to get it done, territory of
his coaching tenure with the Buckeyes, gotta get it done.

Speaker 6 (01:48:08):
Yeah, I agree with you. I think that's a tremendous
amount to prove. Also staying in the same conference, and
I'm sure I'm in a or. I have a friend
who's going to agree with me. Here another Penn State alumnus,
Jared Smith. We have James Franklin, kind of in the
same boat. Look, the recruiting classes have been solid over

(01:48:31):
the years he's been a coach there. The competition obviously
is fierce in the conference, but the lack of playoff
berths through his tenure as a head coach of the
Nittney Lions. And I like James Franklin. I think James
is a good coach. I think he's a good person.
I think his locker room loves him, the players who
play for him. He does everything right, except that one

(01:48:55):
hill left the climb is breaking into the postseason. If
they missin extended postseason somehow this year, especially with some
of the press that they're getting. With Drew Aller being
considered one of the higher potential draft picks coming out
of college football this upcoming season, it's gonna be a problem.
So I staying in that same conference. I think James

(01:49:17):
Franklin is a similar boat to Ryan Day.

Speaker 12 (01:49:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:49:20):
I used to watch this, this very talented offensive lineman
at Penn State during my time there. I used to
go to these games and man, they were so tough
in the trenches. This Orenberger guy would just get into
you make people move at the line of scrimmix. That's
what Penn State's all about. Baby. It's my dream to
attend a Penn State game with you one day, Pal.

Speaker 3 (01:49:38):
I hope that'd be great. Yeah, we got to make
that happen.

Speaker 4 (01:49:41):
I think USC maybe a little later on in the
year when they come our way out here in the
West Coast, might be on the docket. But I think
Ryan Day is one hundred percent at the top of
the list. I mean, you can't lose the Michigan three
years in a row, and guess what he lost to
Michigan three years in a row. You upgraded at quarterback,
You've got a top five recruiting class, You've got every
rece at your disposal. Michigan's down. There is no excuse

(01:50:04):
for Ryan Day not to be a number one team.
You know, a top five kind of playoff vibe for
Ohio State this year, and they've gotta beat Michigan. They've
got to get back to the playoffs. I'll give you
one that we might not be thinking of. And the
hype train on this guy was rolling hard a couple
years ago when they hired him, and that's Billy Napier
At Florida. Everybody was talking about how Billy Napier was
just going to renovate this Florida offense. Well, guess what.

(01:50:26):
Eleven and fourteen and two seasons five and seven, last
year missed a bowl game, and two years ago his
first year, he was the first Florida head coach ever
to lose to all four rivals Florida State, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU.
Now they beat Tennessee last year, but one in seven
against the rivals, and this is no picnic for Napier.
This year they played six of the top seven in

(01:50:48):
the SEC, in addition to your in state rivals Florida State, Miami, UCF.
Now they're good at quarterback, Graham Mertz was way better
than expected last year. The receiver group should be the strength.

Speaker 3 (01:50:59):
Of the team.

Speaker 4 (01:50:59):
So I think Billy Napier doesn't have any excuses this
year besides the offensive line, which can be shaky, although
they did add a good transfer coming in from USC.
I think Billy Napier has to have a good year
or else Florida might be looking to move on.

Speaker 3 (01:51:15):
I'll give you another guy on my list, Dabo Sweeney.

Speaker 4 (01:51:18):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (01:51:19):
And because you look.

Speaker 5 (01:51:20):
At Clemson, they won ten at least ten games for
twelve straight seasons under Dabo Sweeney and that came to
an end last year. So I want to see if
he can get back on track because they've had so
much success over there. But a nine and four season,
that's just that's not what we've seen for a decade

(01:51:41):
plus from Clemson and is reluctance to embrace the transfer portal.
It's one thing if you go against the grain and
it's working. It's another thing if you go against the
grain and it is not working. And you look at
a team like Florida State who plays today in less
than twenty minutes, but Florida State passed up Clemson last season,
and a lot of that was due to transfers.

Speaker 3 (01:52:02):
Like look at their main guys.

Speaker 5 (01:52:03):
Jordan Travis, Keon, Coleman, Johnny Wilson, Jeared Verse, all transfers,
and Dabo gives the Heisman pos to the transfer portal.
He's like, no, we like our own guys, like to
develop them again, man, I think it's outdated and the
win total has been dwindling. So he's got to get
that program back on track.

Speaker 3 (01:52:24):
I think he has.

Speaker 5 (01:52:25):
He's on my needs has to prove something this year
because I haven't sold all my stock. But the arrow
has been pointing down. He's got to get that pointed
back up again.

Speaker 6 (01:52:35):
That's a great thing to point out about Dabo's early
reluctance to adapt to the new and ever changing landscaping
college football. Every year it feels like things are different
than the year before, and not just little differences, like big,
big differences.

Speaker 3 (01:52:51):
And slow adoption of.

Speaker 6 (01:52:53):
These new processes that are happening is not going to
benefit you, because you will look like a dinosaur in
just months time if you don't adjust. I think that's
the reason why Nick Saban got out of the game.
I think he was tired of it. In fact, I
know he was, because he said that he was tired
of you know, minutes after the last whistle of a

(01:53:17):
playoff game and an exhausting loss to Michigan in the postseason.
He's got players burning up his phone asking for more
money or how much playing time he can promise them
for the upcoming football season because they're gonna hop in
the transfer portal unless.

Speaker 3 (01:53:32):
Their needs are met. And so that's just where you're at.

Speaker 6 (01:53:35):
So if you don't like it, Dabo or anybody, then
you gotta move on, because somebody else is going to
do that work. And that's just the direction college football
is pointing right now, and it's not changing anytime soon.

Speaker 4 (01:53:50):
D'htell you quick story really fast. In two thousand and nine,
I was an intern for the Trenton Thunder Minor League
baseball team, and I was put in charge of their
Twitter account, and I was thinking myself, this Twitter thing
is so stupid. Who cares what Britney spears and all
these and all these celebrities are doing this Twitter Thing's
never gonna catch on. Why are we spending so much
time trying to post tweet? Yeah, that's Dabosweeney with the

(01:54:13):
Transfer portal.

Speaker 5 (01:54:14):
That's a great story, well executed and swift.

Speaker 3 (01:54:20):
We've got Rich.

Speaker 5 (01:54:21):
Hornberger, Penn State All American, Jared Smith FSR betting analyst.
I'm Brian Know. Shortly after the show, our podcast will

All right, comeing up.

Speaker 5 (01:54:44):
Will the Undertaker be back for a second straight successful week?

Speaker 3 (01:54:49):
We will find out next.

Speaker 5 (01:54:51):
It is Fox Sports Radios Countdown to Kickoff presented by

MGM will offer all different types of boost tokens.

Speaker 3 (01:55:05):

Speaker 5 (01:55:07):

Trusted Producer, Chris Purfet, Technical producer extraordinaire, crushing the updates
and crushing life. That is Isaac Loewenkron Top of the Hour,
not just Florida State and Georgia Tech up on game,

(01:55:29):
keep it locked right here on FSR, LeVar Arrington, TJ. Hushman,
Zada Plexico Burris. They have got you covered, all right.
We got some picks to make.

Speaker 3 (01:55:38):
Let's do it.

Speaker 2 (01:55:42):
Rapid fire man.

Speaker 3 (01:55:44):
Okay.

Speaker 5 (01:55:45):
So it was just last week where the Undertaker was added.

Speaker 3 (01:55:50):
You had Rich Ornberger closing strong.

Speaker 5 (01:55:53):
This is a brief portion of how it sounded I'm
going all.

Speaker 6 (01:55:56):
Under today and that the Undertaker and he was three
and Oho then Undertaker.

Speaker 3 (01:56:02):
So we'll see what happens with Rich momentarily.

Speaker 5 (01:56:05):
But first though, Jared Smith kicking us off, what do
you like today?

Speaker 4 (01:56:09):
Well, I went back and looked at my pick history
from the first two years of doing the show one
twenty two, ninety three and one fifty seven percent, and
again we have a little big sample size. Now I
will try to keep fifty seven percent on the horizon
for this college football season. I'll give you this under
in Delaware State Hawaii. It's continuing to move down. I
bet under fifty five and a half this morning. The
number here currently at MGM fifty two and a half.

(01:56:32):
I play this down to fifty one. What is Hawaii's
incentive to open up the playbook? They play UCLA next
week and the Bruins coaches are sitting on their couch
watching everything the Rainbow Warriors do. I think this is
going to be a bare bones offense under the Delaware
State ain't gonna do a whole lot under fifty two
and a half. Delaware State Hawaii. Late night, I'll give
you New Mexico catching nearly two touchdowns against Montana State.

(01:56:54):
You heard that right, An FBS team catching nearly two touchdowns,
thirteen and a half, the current number against an FCS team.
I know Montana State is great, they almost won the
Natty a few years ago, but still New Mexico Bronco Mendenhall.
I think they keep this one a little bit closer
than the odds expect. And finally, I'll give you an
NFL preseason total because the Unders are going ham in

(01:57:18):
the preseason. Twenty seven and eleven. So what are we
gonna do. We're gonna bet it over Brown Seahawks over
thirty six and a half. I think you're gonna see
starters from both offenses play in this game tonight.

Speaker 6 (01:57:30):
All right, Ravens don't like losing in the preseason. They
had that ridiculous twenty four win streak. Twenty four game
win streak in the preseason snapped last year. They're one
and one this preseason. They're getting two and a half
today against the Packers.

Speaker 3 (01:57:45):
I like it.

Speaker 6 (01:57:45):
Give me Baltimore Cowboys favored by three and a half
over the Chargers.

Speaker 3 (01:57:50):
For good reason.

Speaker 6 (01:57:51):
It looks like Trey Lance could play the entire game
and maybe potentially be traded after this game. Well, give
me the Boys favored by three and a half. Staying
with that game for a second, give me the under
on the thirty three and a half points. The Undertaker returns.
Chargers have scored a grand total of twelve points through
two weeks of the preseason, and Padres pitcher Michael King

(01:58:14):
rock solid for the Padres seven games, last seven games,
five and one record two to one six e r
facing David Peterson with the Mets last seven games four
to one, record two four five era strong pictures, equal
low run totals.

Speaker 3 (01:58:28):
Give me the under on the seven and a half
runs Mets at Padres.

Speaker 5 (01:58:33):
Okay, I like a bonus pick from Rich because one
of his starting pitchers got scratched earlier this season.

Speaker 3 (01:58:38):
I think it was Joe Muskrove, it was Threst last night.
Just karma.

Speaker 4 (01:58:44):
I love circle.

Speaker 5 (01:58:45):
Jared and Rich are neck and neck for the summer
rapid fire picks. I would like to refer to myself
as the bronze medalist. I'm on the podium, which is
a nice way of saying I'm dead freaking last year.
I can't wait for new season. With football officially back
next week, we wipe the slate clean. But for today,

(01:59:07):
I'm all over this Florida State Georgia Tech game. Give
you a couple of props. Give me dj dj uiy
ungla leg under two twenty five and a half passing yards.
I think they're gonna rely heavily on the ground game.
Give me a Florida State running back Lawrence Towah Feely
over forty and a half rushing yard. It's gonna be
rushing by committee. But that Georgia Tech defense, they are

(01:59:31):
a sieve over there. And I'm also gonna go under
twenty seven and a half combined points in the first half.
I'm not expecting major fireworks right away, so We're gonna
slow play this thing just a little.

Speaker 3 (01:59:45):
Bit right there. Like it? There you go, I love it.

Speaker 5 (01:59:48):
Hi, everybody ball is back up on, game is back.
It is a beautiful day. You guys, enjoy it and
we will catch you soon.

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
