Speaker 1 (01:36):
That's a doozy man, like do you come in here,
you're filling it and I make you do like the
longest thread. So thank you so much, Tracy.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
No full, it's good practice.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
It no, it's especially I was telling you before we
got on air. I was the copywriter for the Buccaneers
for a couple of years before I started covering the team.
So I had to do all of the radio I
had to write all the radio reads. I had to
write all of this stuff. And it's just like it
burned in my brain, like all right, no more than
fifteen seconds, no more than this, and you know it's
sixty words or whatever it is, So I appreciate you
doing that. But yes, as you mentioned, Tracy, you're fresh

(02:06):
off of flight preseason finale for the Niners and Raiders.
At least it was a short flight. There are a
few games left over. There is a stoppage in the
Lions Steelers game. It looks like someone got hurt. I
hope everything's okay. There's a couple more games left today,
but all in all, the bulk of the preseason is
behind us. But now that that's the case, we had

(02:29):
a historic quarterback draft this year. Six qbs taken in
the top twelve, just an outrageous number, some surprises along
the way. Three of them we know for sure are
now going to start Week one, and that is Caleb Williams,
Jaden Daniels, and Bo Nicks. I want to talk about

(02:51):
their preseason performance and what the confidence is with each
one individually, because I think there's varying pressures on each
of them, and I want to start, obviously with I
think the guy who has the most pressure on him,
which is Kayla Williams, taken first overall, he is already

(03:11):
nicknamed the Prince who was promised in Chicago. No pressure,
No pressure. I literally that was actually the title of
my story up in Fox sports dot Com, just about
evaluating and the things I found encouraging throughout his preseason performance.
And this city has been so starved for quarterback play.
They've never had a four thousand yard passer, never had
a quarterback throw for thirty touchdowns. These are the things

(03:34):
that Kayler Williams is coming into and I think he's
very uniquely positioned coming from La where he was at USC,
he was in the limelight. He's part of the Nil generation.
He's learned how to manage his money, manage his business,
made something like twenty one million dollars in college. I
had so many reasons to be encouraged by him, though

(03:55):
it was a small sample size, though it's not live bullets,
it's the preseason. I love the way that he seems
to be adjusting to Shane Waldron's scheme more than that
their offensive coordinator. I love the way that the scheme
is adjusting to Caleb Williams skill set, which I think
is very important and something we saw the last two
years in Chicago with Justin fields and Luke Getzi they
were it was like a square peg in a round hole,

(04:16):
like it was just not fitting. And you can already
see the makings of Waldron's system benefiting Caleb Williams, allowing
him to do the fun off script things, but also
keeping him in rhythm and doing some fun things protection wise,
with multiple tight ends out there, multiple running backs. Even
I saw a couple of full back plays in there.
Make fullbacks great again, y'all.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
Oh, Kyle, you check somewhere is cheering right, like the
Niners can't have all the fun when it comes to fullbacks.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
So I want to get your take on it, because
obviously I'm really close to it. I grew up in Chicago,
Like Bears fans are the ones that are overwhelmingly, in
my mention, from a national perspective. I still think though,
that there are a lot of eyes on Caleb Williams.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
Oh one hundred percent, because I I think everybody looks
at him as the guy that really could be the
guy for the Bears, and the Bears have not had
that in so long. I mean, I think Jake Cutler
was the last person that they thought might be.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
Kind and never make those benchmarks those threshold.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Yeah, he never did, and I think Caleb Williams all
eyes are on him.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
I have to say his performance in the preseason gave.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Me a lot of confidence just as a football fan
and writer, and it was fun to watch him, and
that's I think what the Bears have been missing obviously
from my years. Its winning is fun, Losing is not fun,
So that is definitely part of it.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
But he's breaking.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
Breaking news and analysis, but he's fun to watch and
he's developing a chemistry with roaming Doone's. I mean, there
are reasons for Bears fans to actually be excited for
the first time in a long time. And you brought
something up that I think is really important, not just
him adjusting to the scheme, but the scheme adjusting to him.
And I think that's one of the most important things
with a quarterback, and I think it's one of the

(05:55):
things that can really hurt a team because if you
draft a person and he's not what your scheme is
and you can't adjust, he will not succeed. It doesn't
matter how good a quarterback he is. So I think
that that has been very encouraging. I'm excited. I'm excited
to watch him every week, and I I watch preseason
football when I have to for my job, but I
actually watched some Calbilians for fun.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
I thought he was great, and in the way that
he's fun, I think it's what's so important is the
way that he has fun within this game or goes
off script. Because if you watch him scramble, he keeps
his eyes up. He's looking for additional throwing lanes to
make a play with his arm, not just tucking and
running and trying to make the play with his legs,
though he can do that. His first touchdown as a
Bear was a rushing touchdown that he pulled out of

(06:38):
a hat like a magician. But this is where it
deviates for me from the first overall pick and the
second overall pick because you look at Jayden Daniels and
as talented as he was at LSU, I mean, what
Jayden Daniels did at LSU cannot be understated or overstated,
I should say, because that defense was horrible. It was

(06:59):
absolutely a trouch. Jayde Daniels had to go out there
and score forty to forty five points every single game,
and sometimes he would score thirty five to forty points
and they'd still lose the game, like this was an
absolutely dismal defense. At LSU, Jade Daniels overcame it and
then patted his stats on top of that. But now

(07:19):
coming into the league, he's not the biggest guy and
his play style is very physical. Even at LSU, there
were times where I had to hold my breath watching him,
being like, I don't like you're taking those hits. And
even in the last preseason game, his last preseason game,
he scrambled, took off, took tackles like got tackled, and

(07:40):
you could see the coaches on the sideline reaming him out,
saying you can't do that.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
They can't afford that.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
He's not Like I said, his frame is slight, and
I just worry that he is the type of scrambler
where he does tuck and run and make those additional
plays with his legs while not really keeping his eye.
I don't know what have you seen from him.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
I would agree with that.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
But the thing that I think with Jadan Daniels that
I would be the most I think concerned is probably
a dramatic word, but that'd be most concerned about it.
You mentioned with Kayla Williams he's kind of uniquely positioned
to handle the pressure because where he went to college,
this city he was in. Jaden Daniels is coming into
an organization that's not just rebuilding a team, it's rebuilding
the organization.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
Yeah, the culture, everything.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
Is being changed, and so I think for a lot
of these guys, there is a pressure to do that,
and that's a lot to put on someone and I
think that is something they're going to have to be
really careful with because sometimes when that happens. I think
that's why he can sometimes take off and run and
take these tackles that he shouldn't because he's like, well,
I could do it.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
But he's going to have to think longevity, right.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
It can't just be about because they're not the com matters,
are not going to Super Bowl this year, So he
has to think about the longevity of his career, the
longevity of the organization. But I think that's a place
where that's a tough thing because it in a lot
of ways Kayleb Williams has is too, but it's different.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
But a lot of ways it's like, here are the
keys to the organization.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
Good luck, because we're rebuilding and you're the face have
a great game.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
I have a great game, so it's cut.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
That to me is kind of one of the other
concerns I would have, which you, yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
And I mean the hits are different in Yeah, the
guys coming after you or bigger, they're stronger, they're faster,
defenses are more sophisticated. They're gonna trick you a lot
easier like this is. But I agree that I think
that at least from an organizational standpoint, while there's a
lot of change over there, because of that changeover, there's
not a pressing or pressure to win right now because

(09:30):
you also share a division with the Eagles and you
have to think that they're gonna win. And then the
Cowboys too for the regular season. They're fantastic, We know that.
I don't think that there's a ton of pressure on
them to get it right this year. But it's gonna
have to You're gonna have to lay a foundation there,
and that's where I think Jayden Daniels is going to,
like you said, have to think longevity, and then you

(09:52):
think about longevity and how that wasn't the case in Denver.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Oh God, how to hot mess that was?

Speaker 4 (09:58):
Okay?

Speaker 1 (10:00):
I think that there is I don't think there's as
much pressure on boon Nicks as there is on Sean Payton.
That's fair because I think a lot of this pressure
is kind of deflected onto pay and rightfully so, because
at this point, the Denver Broncos are paying Russell Wilson
fifty three million dollars to not play for them. I
would really love to get that paycheck.

Speaker 5 (10:19):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
You know what, I also don't play for the Broncos.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
You don't give me. You can't give me like.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
Five million dollars not playing for them.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
With that, But this was at the direction of Sean Payton.
Get rid of Russell Wilson. He's not my guy. I
can't do anything with him. Let him leave. On top
of that, he then takes a guy in bow Nix,
who many thought was more of a Day two pick,
and he's played a lot of football in college. So
it's one of those things where like, is he kind

(10:48):
of set in some of his habits? Are you going
to be able to mold him and change him more
or like less so than some of these other guys
who maybe didn't have as much Like a JJ McCarthy
at Michigan. I know you're a guy as he went
to Michigan. Guys, She'll probably.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
Say, if they were listening last week, they know it
was a lot of devastations.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
I get it, I get it Michigan Wolverine's stand up.
But that's the thing is he's such a developed JJ
McCarthy is such a developmental prospect, which is why I
loved going him going to Minnesota because of the coaching
staff that's in place and the guys that can kind
of develop him. And the injury just sucks. But bo Nix,
on the other hand, has had plenty of chances to
play football and we kind of know what to expect

(11:25):
from him. Is that going to translate into Sean Payton's system.
I feel like Sean Payton's trying to mold him a
lah Drew Brees who did come to Sean Payton after
like he didn't come to him right away in a league.
So I think that Sean Payton, this all has to
go well for Sean Payton to retain any sort of
respect in Denver, And maybe this affects his legacy in

(11:49):
general because you're talking about costing an organization and handicapping
an organization because of this dead money on top of
taking a pick that the league was surprised by that
went twelfth. Overall, this has to go right.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
It has to go right. And I agree with you
that the pressure is on Sean Payton. I mean, he
was the coaching darling of that cycle. Everybody wanted Sean Payton,
so and he's already been comparing him to Drew Brees
at times. When Yeah, he does that, I kind of
cringe a little bit because I like, it's almost not fair.
But I have a counterpoint, maybe another thought in terms
of him playing so much football in college that might

(12:24):
actually position him to be able to play well in
the NFL. And that's the that's kind of the it's
he didn't play as much, but still with the Brock
Party thing, like, if you play a lot of football
in college, you're ready to go. You come to a
guy like Sean Payton, who now Sean Payton, like you
said before, with the Bears, he's he might have to
mold him, and he might have to mold like they're
gonna have differ given me. But I think that having

(12:47):
played a lot of football in college may actually end
up being a benefit for Bonnicks as opposed to a negative.

Speaker 1 (12:52):
Yeah, I mean, we're gonna We're gonna find out.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
Real We're gonna find out in a couple weeks.

All right, that's what we're going for. Welcome back to
Fox Sports Saturday. I'm your host Carmen Vitali and for
Alex Curry, also Tracy Sandler of Fangirls Sports Network with me.
We're coming to you live from the tirerac dot Com
studios and it is time to get into something that
Tracy knows very very well. If you guys missed earlier,

(14:12):
Tracy is fresh off the plane because she was in
Vegas last night for the preseason finale of the forty
nine Ers Raiders game. She sends me a video guys
last night. She's like, there are some vibes that we're
gonna talk about tomorrow, and it is a video of
you in the tunnel Brandon Ayuk, who traveled with the team. Yes,

(14:33):
he did, coming into the tunnel. It's up, Tracy. Hi,
Brandon walks away, So tell me, Tracy, what are the vibes?
Brandon Ayuk is with the team in Vegas for a
preseason game that he was never going to play in,
even if he had signed a deal. What's up.

Speaker 3 (14:49):
Well, it's interesting because other than the game in Nashville,
he's been with the team the whole time, right, so
he's a practice He was doing some conditioning work. On
the site last week, he's watching practice, he's chatting with
d he walked in with Debo. So the vibes were fine,
and Kyle Shanahan was asked after the game, is there
any kind of distraction of having him here?

Speaker 2 (15:08):
And no, I still think.

Speaker 3 (15:10):
The Holden generally is not a distraction, But I think
it's a daily reminder and he's not there yet. But
I do think it's promising. He went, he came with
the team. I don't know that they like made him.
There were things about that today. I don't think it's that.
I think it's promising. I think he wants to be there.
They just have to figure it out. It's just the

(15:32):
vibes are a little bizarre because it feels like he
wants to be there, but they can't seem to figure
it out. But there's still the possibility of a trade,
and it's just like just let's do it. Like from
my perspective, I'm like one way or the other. And
I really like ba He is real good for my
social media content, So like, not to make this about me,
but I really want him to say but it like,
let's do this exactly. Sorry, guys, check out Niners unplugged. Sorry,

(15:57):
but they're just let's do this, try to keep them.
My sense though, and I think I've been saying this
to you and Alex every time you've had me on.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
My sense is he is going to say, I.

Speaker 1 (16:07):
Want to say you have You've been very steadfast in that.
I think there was a little bit of doubt when
the like the smoke for the Steelers was really coming
out strong. But what I don't really understand, and it
was actually James Jones unspeak on FS one that said this,
and I thought it was hysterical. He's like, this is
how you know that agents aren't moms and dads, Because
if I'm his mom, if I'm his dad, I'd being like,
what do you want? Do you want the money? Because

(16:30):
there are reports out there that he has was offered
by other teams to be the second highest paid wide
receiver in the league. But no, he doesn't want to
go to one of those teams because those teams aren't
the good teams. Right. But then all right, the Niners
are like, we'll give you like twenty eight twenty nine million,
and he's like, no, that's not enough. I want that
thirty million dollars. It's like, you can't have both. You

(16:51):
have to make some decisions. What do you want? Do
you want to be on a good team, or do
you want the most money you can get? Those things
are not they're mutually exclusive. They're not. You can't get all.
He can't have it all, my dude.

Speaker 2 (17:01):
You can't have it all.

Speaker 3 (17:02):
But I I don't know if he's kind of enjoying this,
Like I don't know if this is fun for him,
because we saw him do some stuff on social media.
We saw him on a podcast saying like flat out
saying this is fun, and maybe he doesn't entirely know
what he wants. I think he wants to have them both,
and I think he feels like and I don't think
he's wrong that they're gonna get to a point where

(17:24):
they just say, fine, here's the third because when you
look at what's going on in their wide receiving core
right now, they have they're deep.

Speaker 2 (17:31):
But if Ricky Piersol, who's.

Speaker 3 (17:32):
Their first round pick, who has been injured basically since
he got there, Yes, he was heard in Ricky minnick
a mini camp.

Speaker 2 (17:40):
He came to camp with a hamstring injury that he.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
Reaggravated his shoulder injury, so he's not on the field,
so you kind of need Brandon, and they.

Speaker 2 (17:49):
Don't have a true wide receiver one.

Speaker 3 (17:50):
And I think they need Brandon you whether or not
Ricky Pearsol was on the field, but I don't think
one really nestily had to do with the other this year.
But I think they're gonna get to a point where
it's like, okay, fine, he's also and I know I've
said this before too, he is Brock's guy. Yeah, he's
brock Pretty's favorite receiver. And if you have a young
quarterback who himself is going into a contract year, you
can't take away as best receiver. So I just feel

(18:13):
like they're gonna get to a point, maybe alla Nick
Fosa last year, right before the season started, where they
just say, okay, fine, here's the thirty at least sign
your contract.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
If he were to take twenty nine million, you're still
the fifth highest paid wide receiver in the league. Also, like,
especially when he's not charged with the same loads that
the rest of like wide receiver ones are, because he's
got DEBO, because he's got CMC, because you've got George
Kittle on that team, Like you're not having to put
in as much work and carry the offense as much

(18:43):
if you're a wide receiver one in the Niners system
under Sanahan, because there are all these other pieces, and
yet you would still be the fifth highest payers.

Speaker 7 (18:52):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (18:53):
But here's the other thing, And this is one thing
I really wanted to talk about with you, because I
feel like no one is talking enough about the fact
that our PU, a guy that is more important to
the Niners. R Williams, is not with them.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
He's not.

Speaker 1 (19:07):
He's holding out out.

Speaker 2 (19:08):
He is holding out out.

Speaker 3 (19:09):
That is what I think they're They're definitely going to
figure out because they have to. He he is the
best left tackle football the line is. I mean, if
you were to get hurt, the season's done. In my opinion,
we saw it last year. He got hurt and he
was They lost the three games he was out, So
it's gonna get done. But no, I think people aren't
talking about it as much because he's holding out whereas
Brandon's holding in so you're seeing him every day. But

(19:31):
I would agree it's more important, like we've seen it
in the preseason. Without Trent Williams are going back to
brock party. This is your guy. You need to protect him,
So I would say it's much more important that one.
I do think they're for sure going to get done
sooner rather than I think probably this is like total conjecture.

(19:54):
I just think he's, you know, later in his career,
he's not the most he's not the highest paid left
tackle now, so they have to figure out that money.
I don't I think that one as I think to
do the other. I don't think it's like, oh, they
have to figure out Brandon before they can figure out Trent.

Speaker 2 (20:04):
They just got to figure out the money and his age.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
How much guaranteed money are you giving a left tackle
that's thirty six way in the season, And I think
that's probably a little bit of what they have to figure.

Speaker 1 (20:13):
Do you think that he wants a multi year deal
where as the Niners are like, I don't know, we'll
make you the highest paid left tackle for one year.
Like do kind of a Jason Kelce type thing where
the last couple of years of Jason Kelce's career, the
Eagles were just signing him to like new one year
contracts and making him the highest paid but only committing
to you know, one year, given his age, Do you
think like Trent would want to take that or is

(20:34):
he looking for more?

Speaker 2 (20:35):
I think again, this is total.

Speaker 3 (20:37):
I would think he's looking more for a multi year
deal because he's been pretty open about the fact that
he wants to play until someone says to him, you
can't play anymore.

Speaker 1 (20:45):
Yeah, he's going whitworth. He's like I got it.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
He's like, I still got it, and I'm going to
be here for well. So I think that's probably what
and he does. He one hundred percent does and he's
earned that and he deserves that. So I imagine it's
just kind of figuring out the intricacies to all that
these contract things are not so easy.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
I wonder if he also wanted to wait and until
Tristan Worf's got his deal with the Buccaneers, because that
made Tristan Worf's the highest paid left tackle, and like
you kind of knew that Tampa Bay was going to
have to do that, especially after you asked Tristan Worfs
to switch from right to left and then he still
performed at an all pro level, which is absolutely insane.
I cannot truss to you guys enough. It is so

(21:23):
hard to switch sides as an offensive lineman because now
your muscle memory is working against you rather than for you.
And someone like Tristan, who had been a right tackle forever,
You're like, heyo, big dog, go to the other side,
play left tackle, play the most important position on our
offense for us, and we'll see how it goes. And
sure enough, he wrote to the occasion, I can't say
enough about Tristan Worfs, which is why I'm gonna plug

(21:44):
him at every chance I get. But I wonder if
that was kind of a domino that needed to fall
before Trent was comfortable saying, all right, now I know
where the benchmark is. Now I know what the highest
paid left tackle looks like, So like I want to
get you know, one hundred and two hundred thousand than
that just baseball principle, because I've been so important to
this team for so long.

Speaker 3 (22:04):
If he could have holds all the cards here, he
holds the cards more, I think than even Brandon does
because he knows too.

Speaker 2 (22:10):
No, Trent Williams, no super Bowl.

Speaker 1 (22:13):
It's true. It's one hundred percent true. Offensive lines matter. Guys.
Now we're going to go to Brian Fenley for a
quick update.

Speaker 8 (22:20):
Breaking Yes, Tracy and Carmen Also, I would think funer
kickers matter a lot considering what happened in college football
today Georgia Tech and number ten or Freshno State Florida State.

Speaker 9 (22:33):
How dare I?

Speaker 1 (22:36):
It looked like Fresno State out there. The horn did the.

Speaker 5 (22:42):
Luck of the Irish, it's the heart of the Jackets,
and Georgia Tech knocks up under ten Florida State.

Speaker 8 (22:50):
And that was Georgia Tech Radio network. I'm sure both
of you saw at least the highlights there as you're
preparing FOE.

Speaker 1 (22:57):
I would like cry myself away from the game just
to drive here because I was like, what of wants?

Speaker 8 (23:02):
Yeah, and you know, you start to think to yourself,
it's a preseason ten seed Florida State, and that seems
obviously very lofty for where they are now. And obviously
that just shows you just how little credence should be
put into the preseason rankings. Yes, not the only one.
I'm sure I'm sure many here in sports radio would
feel the same way. But yes, it was eight and

(23:23):
Berr making a forty one yard field goal to seal
it for Georgia Tech over number ten. That's not going
to be anymore Florida State twenty four to twenty one.
The final score right now in college football on FS one,
our sister station, New Mexico has a seven and nothing
leading against Montana State six minutes to go in the
first quarter. Christian Ellis returning a fumble back for a

(23:43):
score four and a half minutes into the first quarter.
That is our only source of offense in this game.
So we are week zero and we're digging deep for
some of these games.

Speaker 9 (23:53):
But hey, it is college football.

Speaker 1 (23:54):
Nice to be back on the TV.

Speaker 9 (23:55):
It is so nice to be back on television.

Speaker 8 (23:58):
Speaking of which, we are not going to see Deshaun
Watson back on television tonight the preseason finale for the Browns.
He is set to play Week one of the regular season,
but did experience some arm soreness, and whether or not
that's precautionary or something else, he is not going to
be able to play, and we haven't really seen him
in the preseason or head into all of that. It's

(24:21):
like Carbon has a couple of ideas on what that
can be all about. Also, Cowboys corner Deron Blain having
surgery on a stress fracture in his foot, so that'll
put him out six to eight weeks. Quickly, two or
three notable nuggets from preseason games that are going on
right now. Bryce Young played a series for the Panthers,
had a touchdown and went twelve plays eighty five yards

(24:44):
on that drive, six of eight through the air.

Speaker 9 (24:46):
For seventy yards.

Speaker 8 (24:47):
His Panthers, by the way, they are taking on this
Bills squad. And as we look at what else has
gone on, obviously the Panthers and the Bills battling it out.
Panthers win thirty one to twenty six. Also, the Steve
coming up to Troy against the Lines twenty four to seventeen.
Significant because Steelers said coach Mike Tomlins said that he's
gonna make a decision on his starting quarterback at.

Speaker 9 (25:08):
The end of next week.

Speaker 8 (25:10):
And lastly, yeah, exactly, we'll see how that how that
works out. And then lastly, we do have right now
Chargers leading the Cowboys seven to three. Priest's in action
late in the first quarter, it was a Darius Davis
seventy yard touchdown run. Each and Stick is the one
that's starting quarterback for the Chargers. Also, Trey Lance Carmen

(25:32):
as I get it back to you in Tracy.

Speaker 9 (25:34):
Obviously Tracy with the forty nine ers.

Speaker 8 (25:36):
You know Trey Lance very well, and so far as
he's been starting in this game for the Cowboys, nine
to thirteen, seventy six yards has not been sacked. But yeah,
it's preseason seven to three Chargers Cowboys late first quarter man.

Speaker 1 (25:48):
All right, well, thank you, Brian. We're gonna we'll talk
a little bit about that. I think a little bit later,
but for right now, we've got Matt Barrows from the
Athletic on the line who covers the forty nine, So
a little bit more forty nine ers talk. I want
to get your perspective on this.

Speaker 9 (26:04):
Matt.

Speaker 1 (26:04):
Thank you so much for joining us.

Speaker 10 (26:06):
Oh thanks for having me on.

Speaker 1 (26:07):
Really appreciate you coming on. We were just talking at
Tracy and I about not only Brandon Ayyuk, which has
dominated the news cycles because as she pointed out, he's
holding in and so he's around and so you're seeing
his face and the squeaky wheel, the squeaky wheel gets
the oil, I guess, but also Charent Williams is a
total holdout and is, as Tracy so lovely pointed out,

(26:31):
more important to the offense than pretty much anybody else.
So what is it that you are hearing when it
comes to both of these guys, do we think that
deals are getting done soon at all? What is your
take on the situation? What does you read?

Speaker 10 (26:45):
Yeah, well, my read is that we're going to be
in the stalemate for a little while longer.

Speaker 4 (26:50):
I mean, I'm so tired, Matt, I'm so tired driving
around it every day.

Speaker 10 (26:57):
I go back last year with the Nick both the
situation and Nick Bosha didn't get signed in the spring,
didn't get signed in the summer. All of August goes by,
and we go into September and then Nick Bosa gets
exactly what he wants, which is the highest contract for
a non quarterback in all the land. So I mean

(27:18):
to me, every agent with a prominent forty nine er
on their client list saw that and said, okay, let's
just let's just take this to the last possible deadline
and then they're going to capitulate. And so I think
that's going to happen. I mean, what are we now,
fifteen sixteen days away from Week one against the Jets.

(27:41):
This is the bewitching hour. This is when these guys
need to come in in order to be up to speed.
And I think for Brandon Ayu. It's more important just
because he plays a position where you need a lot
of stamina and you need a lot of cohesion with
your quarterback. He's younger too.

Speaker 7 (27:58):
I think it's a.

Speaker 10 (27:59):
Little bit more imperative that he gets in earlier if
they expect him to have a big game against the Jets.
And at this point, I'm starting to think, Okay, he
might play against the Jets, but it's not going to
be his normal ninety eight ninety nine percent of the
offensive snaps more around sixty five seventy percent of the

(28:19):
offensive snaps.

Speaker 3 (28:21):
I would agree with that. I also kind of barrows.
I kind of think this might be crazy. I think
Trent Williams gets done first. Yeah, I kind of think
Trent Williams gets done first because I think I don't know.
I like you said, I said this before you came on.
I think with Brandon it's going to be down to
the final hour and they're going to be like fine,
like it was with Bosa, Fine, here's what you want,

(28:41):
you want it to have it. I just I don't know
why I think Trent gets done first. Maybe that's just
me being crazy, but it's kind of a gut thing
and we'll see how good my gut is.

Speaker 10 (28:49):
Well, there's the sense that Trent was not eager to
take part in training camp, being.

Speaker 3 (28:57):
That's kind of what I was alluding to with his age.

Speaker 10 (29:02):
Training camp was over, and then all three preseason games
were played, and now, like I said, it's still sixteen days.
So even if he came in a couple of days
from now, it's must two weeks, a two week tune
up to get ready for the season. You know, you
get a few snaps with Nick Bosa and then all
of a sudden you say yourself, you know what, I

(29:23):
feel pretty good about playing against the yet, so I
agree with you from that standpoint. It may have been
something where he just said, listen, I'm gonna wait until
late August anyway, and then let's get this deal done.
But you know, he's also no stranger to holding out
for lengthy He went a whole year in Washington in

(29:46):
a holdout. So he's not a guy that you want
to get into a staring contact with for multiple reasons.

Speaker 6 (29:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (29:54):
Serious, I think Kyle Shanahan's worst nightmare if he held
out a year. But you bring up Nick Bosa, So
I want to talk about the defensive line. The front
are sustained a couple of injuries last night, and Leonard
Floyd and Yacher Gross Matos they're having MRIs today.

Speaker 2 (30:07):
Kyle Shanahanson he thinks it's an e sprain, Matt.

Speaker 3 (30:10):
The defensive line is getting very thin, and not because
they're on a diet.

Speaker 2 (30:14):
I planned that line earlier, so I don't want to
have anything. I just made that up.

Speaker 3 (30:17):
But what are they going to have to do? Are
they going to have to do something here? Because they
are losing quite a bit of depth there.

Speaker 10 (30:23):
Yeah, it wasn't a real deep spot to start out
with before last night's injuries. You know, Craig Jackson has
the teller injury that's going to keep them out the
full season. So they were already down to basically four
guys for kind of you know, game day ready guys,
and you know, we're waiting on these MRIs. They may

(30:46):
be minor sprains and we're talking just a few days
or maybe a week and a half or so. But
if it were more serious, yeah, I think that they
don't say they're in trouble, but that's definitely a position
where on Wednesday, after these cuts are made, they're they're
scouring the waiver wires for defensive linemen and I think

(31:07):
particularly defensive ends edge rush, and I think just about
every team is at this point. There's been a lot
of injuries league wide at that position, so I don't
know if that's a spot that they could readily bulk up.
So it's it's a big concern. This happened on consecutive plays,
sort of similar plays too. I mean, both both guys

(31:28):
got their legs caught underneath the teammate and sort of
bent awkwardly, So very scary. It just kind of shows
you how how dramatically you know, the fortunes of the team,
the fortunes of a position group can can change.

Speaker 1 (31:44):
Yeah, it's friendly fires, I think because there's like there's
nothing you do about it. Can't be mad about it
either because it happens all the time. But Matt, this
is We've said this over and over again. I feel
like the last few years I was of the A
listen to that listen. Not getting rid of BA was
not going to get you over the hump, which is

(32:06):
what these Niners have not been able to do. They've
been very successful objectively getting to the NFC Championship, game,
getting to the Super Bowl and then they just can't
close it. What is it going to take for them
to close?

Speaker 10 (32:19):
I mean, I think it's just going to be that
that fourth year. I mean, the fourth year is always
sort of wonky on these on these contracts. You know,
sometimes it's just absurd money. And it's cleared everybody that's
really a three year deal that that will never get
to the fourth I don't know what the details of
this of the fourth year offer are or the fourth

(32:42):
year of what the forty nine ers are offering, but
apparently that's the hold up. And you understand why it
would be because you know, you don't want to if
you're the player, you don't want it just to be
a phony year where you're not really shined through four seasons.
And maybe that's what it's gonna end up being. Maybe

(33:03):
it's a three year extension Deepo Samuels. Another difficult contract
negotiation for the forty nine ers was a three year deal.
Are your deal would benefit the player because the player
would still be in his twenties and he'd get another
bite at free agency. So maybe that's what it ends
up being. Compromises that Okay, we'll only sign you for

(33:25):
three more seasons.

Speaker 1 (33:27):
Well, this is going to have to come to a
head and close very quickly. And I think that, I mean,
Tracy's been said fast and the Brandon and I you
re remanding a forty nine er. I think I'm still
on that boat too. I don't think the forty nine
ers can really make a huge push without him, certainly
not without Trent Williams. But thank you so much for
joining the program today. Wonderful to talk to you, Matt.

(33:48):
Wonderful to meet you over the air, and have a
great day and get ready for the season.

Speaker 2 (33:53):
Thanks Baris.

Speaker 10 (33:53):
I will thank you for having me on.

Speaker 1 (33:55):
Of course, all right, you guys coming up next after
the break. We have our dues and our don'ts.

Speaker 1 (34:14):
All right, idiom vibes, Welcome back to Fox Sports Radio.
I'm Common Vitally. I'm hosting in for Alex Curry and
I've got Tracy Sandler with me from Fangirl Sports Network.
Tray for being here. We're coming to you live from
the hi Raq dot Com Studios and we just had
Matt Barrows on. We've been talking a bunch of forty

(34:34):
nine ers, BA and Trent Williams. But now it's time
for the dues and the don'ts highlighting the dukes.

Speaker 5 (34:45):
I love that putting a spotlight on the dots.

Speaker 2 (34:47):
The subject brings me no joy.

Speaker 1 (34:51):
That's insane.

Speaker 5 (34:52):
It's time for the dues and the dots.

Speaker 1 (34:54):
In sports, all right, my first one done. Of my
are like super serious, but my first one is do
show up for your coach? And this crosses over from sports,
and I don't usually talk politics, but members of his
state championship team showed up at the Democratic National Convention
to support Tim Walls as his running mate accepted the

(35:19):
nomination for vice president or for president of the United States,
the current vice president, and it was like, it was
so cute. And then Kamala Harris gets up there and
calls him coach Tim Walls, and like, I just like,
get a football guy in office, man, like that, that's
just the best thing. Jim president, Right, who would be
the best president of like the NFL head coaches?

Speaker 2 (35:42):
Oh that's a really really good question, right, I.

Speaker 1 (35:45):
Think you can do a whole segment on that. That'd
be hilarious. Said all right, we don't have to talk
about it now. I want to get to yours.

Speaker 11 (35:49):
But I don't know about NFL coaches, but Nick Saban
could absolutely just look like eighty four McGovern okay, and Reagano.

Speaker 1 (35:57):
I will take your Nick Saban. I will raise you.
Dan Campbell, Oh, Dan Campbell for President of the United
States of America.

Speaker 3 (36:03):
Could you imagine I don't think he's even killed enough.
I'm moving Bill Belichick. Can you imagine that Bill Belichick
press conferences when he's the president.

Speaker 1 (36:10):
Oh man, that's going to be not entertaining. I want
the entertaining stuff. Give me Dan Campbell.

Speaker 2 (36:15):
Well that's that's true.

Speaker 3 (36:16):
But but if we're really going with the best president, though,
that would be fun. I'm still going Jim Jim Harba
is going to be my He's going to get my
vote for everything in the world.

Speaker 1 (36:23):
Okay, thank you?

Speaker 3 (36:27):
All right, Oh I have Okay, So my don't all
my dontes are not all that serious. But my first
don't is do not schedule a preseason football game at
seven pm on a Friday night.

Speaker 2 (36:37):
I'm with you, preseason game three?

Speaker 3 (36:40):
No less that is a very, very big don't that
I feel so strongly about, like I might start some
sort of petition for it.

Speaker 1 (36:47):
It's like the preseason schedule is like especially for the
third preseason game, like come on, come on, we know
like most of the starters aren't playing. It's not worth
anybody's time. Like it's good for guys to get old
Kayton for other teams and stuff, but we don't need
to watch that. I don't know, it's too late, all right,
my next dude, his dude names some guys with your

(37:07):
friends because I don't know if you saw this. The
Bills on social media did the video where they asked
their team the guys about some dudes in the NBA
uh huh, and everybody just comes in with like their
most random NBA player they could think of. Keon Coleman,
their rookie wide receiver, just shined throughout this entire bitter heu.

(37:30):
He's so likely he stuck around with every dude being
like going back and forth naming just random NBA players
and even Brian's Scalabrini got a shout out, which as
someone who grew up a Bulls fan and actually got
to see Brian'sclabrini hit a game winning shot. I'm saying
this in air quotes. He drained a three when the
Bulls were already up by twenty. It was it was phenomenal.

(37:50):
The whole place erupted in Brian's Scalabrini chance. Anyway, it
was just Kean Coleman is so likable. The builders are like, well,
good job bills social media.

Speaker 3 (37:58):
My don't is again preseas you guys, it's gonna tell
I have preseason on the brain. Do not do a
coach's challenge in the game in a game three of.

Speaker 2 (38:06):
A preseason that's scheduled at seven pm.

Speaker 3 (38:08):
That is that that's almost worse in scheduling the game
at tea.

Speaker 2 (38:12):
Don't do that to people.

Speaker 1 (38:13):
Don't do it to yourself, right, what are you getting
out of that? Come on, it's a preseason game. We
should not be taking it that seriously.

Speaker 2 (38:19):
Absolutely no.

Speaker 1 (38:20):
That reminds me of my boyfriend. I were playing against
Doaba like last night, and I was we played together,
but I watched him at one point and like the
computer against him, decided to like call time out when
he was already up by like fourteen points. As the
clock was winding down. So what he did was he
ran another play. He's like, fine, I'm gonna spite you back. Computer.

(38:40):
It was fantastic, but like, yeah, there's no room for
any of that. I We're just treat preseason accordingly, treat
all of that stuff accordingly. All right, I have another
I now have a don't I feel like I have?
I had dues? You have don'ts don't let the opposing

(39:02):
team get stuck in your elevator. Yes, along the lines
of things that you should be able to control and
not do. If you guys didn't see members of the
Chargers team got stuck in an elevator in Dallas ahead
of this preseason game that we are now watching right now.

(39:23):
Like I want to know if it was like because
it was over the weight limit.

Speaker 3 (39:26):
Though, what was like players and I guess stuff. They
had to be pulled out one by one, one by one,
the chef. It's also, can we be honest, it's like
the most Chargers thing ever. It is so chargery And
I say that out.

Speaker 1 (39:38):
Of their control, but like still goes wrong anyway.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
The charger's going to charger and that was like the
full that was about as charger.

Speaker 2 (39:45):
As you could be.

Speaker 1 (39:46):
I can't. I don't know how that happens, Like you
just you have to. There're massive, massive, massive dudes, and
I get that, but like, all right, then don't either
crowd the elevator or whatever. And then just can you
imagine them getting pulled out out by like firefighters who
are all like who are probably smaller than these guys
trying to like yank them out. I just that's it's

(40:07):
it's wild. Do you have another duty?

Speaker 3 (40:09):
I have another don't, but it's a nice don't. And
this is a little bit so boxy, but rosters get
caught on Tuesday.

Speaker 2 (40:15):
Don't celebrate. These are people's lives and this is their jobs.

Speaker 3 (40:19):
And I know everybody wants their team to be the
best and all of that, but you wouldn't want someone
coming going on Twitter if you lost your job, So
you know, I get it. Be a fan, we're all fans,
but just remember that these are people's lives and jobs
in min theirhoods.

Speaker 1 (40:32):
Yeah, yeah, no, I I am totally with you on that.
Just be cool, guys, Be cool? All you cool?

Speaker 2 (40:39):
There we go do be cool?

Speaker 1 (40:40):

Speaker 1 (41:52):
App Well done, you guys. I've given Tracy like the
longest reads today. She's knocked it out of the park.
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (41:59):
I'm seeing you.

Speaker 1 (42:00):
You see what I did, And I really liked that.
I see what I did there. Speaking of nogging it
out of the park. I know we promised you some NFL.
We're going to get back to the NFL really quickly here,
But first, Tracy is wearing a Dodgers.

Speaker 2 (42:13):
T shirt with Otani on the back.

Speaker 1 (42:15):
With Otani on the back, it's her ow Twani T shirt.
She's a huge Dodger fan. I actually worked with the
Dodgers way back when we don't need to say years
or names or anything like that. But no organization that
we're both very familiar with. And I don't know, did
something happen yesterday Terrace?

Speaker 2 (42:31):
Oh my god, she was so exciting.

Speaker 3 (42:32):
So in the same game show, hey, Otani steals his
fortieth face and hits his fortieth home run. He is
the first player in franchise history to have a forty
forty season. But the way he got the fortieth home
run is a walk off Grand Slam and the I mean, honestly,
thinking about it, I might start crying. It was so
amazing and I just can't watch it enough, and you

(42:53):
guys should all check it out. He's incredible.

Speaker 1 (42:57):
The biggest thing for me is I did not I
realized that show Heyotani was that fast, Like he's the
forty stolen bases, and he's also the fastest player in
MLB history to that forty forty mark, which I think
is crazy. It's only been done six times before anyway,
or there's only six players MLB history that I've ever
done it, and he did it in his one hundred
and twenty sixth game of the season, which is the

(43:19):
fastest mark. I just it's wild to me. We were talking
about this off air, like shoe hee Atani gets hurt,
It's like, God, I can't pitch anymore. I guess I'll
just become the best hitter in baseball.

Speaker 3 (43:30):
Yeah, it's incredible, and I think rarely if we want to,
like circle back a little NFL, we we talked about
with rookie quarterbacks and the pressure on them. We talked
at the top of the show, Joey Otani came in
as like so much pressure, they're paying him so much
much money, and he's exceeded expectations.

Speaker 2 (43:46):
How often does that happen?

Speaker 3 (43:47):
Also, when he did his post last night from the game,
the last slide was of his dog decoy, and really
right there.

Speaker 1 (43:54):
He has me, I mean, yeah, like put a dog
in there, like you're but you're so right, because that
contract was insane, richest contract and I'll be history all
of those wonderful things. And yet he has not only
lived up to that contract where you're like, yeah, I
would do that one hundred times out of one hundred again,
but he's exceeded those expectations just with one phase of

(44:15):
his game.

Speaker 2 (44:16):
It's incredible.

Speaker 1 (44:17):
I just I can't wait to see him come back
and pitch and see if, like you know, he can
still maintain this momentum, because it seems impossible to even fathom.
But also like he is completely changing what our expectations
of baseball players are and he's completely changing the game,
and like, God, good luck for these guys coming up,

(44:37):
because like it's how are you? How are you one
of the best pitchers and one of the best hitters
in baseball and like you cantine it's it's wild to me,
but it also to your point of pressure. I mean,
the Dodgers are leading the National lead. Now they're leading
the NL.

Speaker 3 (44:53):
And they have for a while they had their lead
was dwindling a little. They've kind of still three games up.
I believe they're four. I believe therefore at this point,
I'm almost positive, but I think therefore at this time,
but it had gone down to two. But this is
the other thing that's happened for the Dodgers, and I
think we kind of forgot it. They had so many
players on the il. There were so many, and now

(45:13):
they're healthy. Having Max months He back in the lineup
makes a big difference. Having Mookie Bets obviously just being
there makes a huge difference. So now all of a sudden,
what we're seeing is even when the pitching falters a little,
the offense is on fire, and the pitching has gotten
a little bit better. They made some moves at the
deadline that have really helped them. There are still some concerns,
but when this offense is firing like this on all

(45:36):
these cylinders and the pitching isn't good enough, this is
the Dodgers team that I Dodger fans, including myself, are
hoping they could be. But it's just funny how a
player it's not just his bat, it's his presence. What
a difference that makes in a lineup. And that's what
we're seeing for the Dodgers right now.

Speaker 1 (45:51):
Also, like a guy that doesn't really speak English that
well and yet he's like such a clubhouse guy.

Speaker 3 (45:55):
He's such and he's having so much and he does
the dance like they do a dance when they hit
a single or double and they do that. I'm doing
the dance right now, and they do the dance when
they hit a home run and they're a rounding third
and he does it and he's having so much fun
with it, and it's I think he's having a blast.

Speaker 1 (46:11):
I would think so. And I mean we're not that
far removed though, where I feel like a month month
and a half ago, it was like can anybody stop
the Phillies like that was the conversation. And now, yeah,
there are at least three games, if not four games
back at this point you got the Brewers in the
mix there.

Speaker 3 (46:25):
I was thinking the ns okay, so they might be
three that the yah astly okay.

Speaker 1 (46:29):
But I just think it's very It's it's funny, how
like the tables have turned, and now I think the
long season.

Speaker 2 (46:35):
That's the thing with baseball, it's.

Speaker 1 (46:37):
And I do think that at the start of the season.
I think my prediction on here was Yankees Dodgers too.
I mean, major League Baseball would just go go nuts.
If they got a Dodgers Yankees World.

Speaker 2 (46:51):
Series, Sports would go nuts.

Speaker 3 (46:52):
Sports World Series would go nuts. I mean, that would
be so fun and so historic. You'ed of Aaron Judge,
Shoheo Tani, what cedible series that would be. Just thinking
about it's giving me anxiety, But it would be so
much fun.

Speaker 1 (47:04):
It would be. And I mean like, but that is
like if the season weren't end today, hm, that would
be in the World Series. I do like the Yankees
just again, they've been They've followed such a similar path
as the Dodgers. I feel like this season as far
as the rankings and where they've fallen, because at one point,
you know, there are a couple of games back from

(47:25):
the Orioles and like they're trying, like you didn't know
they were still in the mix, but they weren't leading
their league. And now again it was the same thing
with the Dodgers. I feel like the Yankees, they're just
having parallel seasons in so many different ways.

Speaker 3 (47:38):
And you get hot, now, this is when you want
to get hot. And I think for the Dodgers, what's
actually been really good for them for the struggles is
that the last few years, they win the division by
like one million games, they get the bye week, and
so they haven't played meaningful baseball in months. By the
time they go to the division series, even they win
the division, which it looks like they will, and they
get the bye week, they will have been playing meaningful
baseball right the last two months of the season, and

(47:59):
I think that is going to make such a difference
for this team and their postseason push. And plus, also
in case you guys missed it, they have shoo Tony.

Speaker 1 (48:08):
No and again I think that can be applied to
Yankee suit Like. Ah, that is something that's gone underrated.
It's something we've actually talked about on previous shows with
Alex and talking about how yeah, like they have not
been afforded the ability to take their foot off the
gas pedal, uh, and they have had to kind of
fight in these standings and to stay on top, and

(48:31):
like there are teams that are right on their tail
that are closing the gap. And so it means that
I think that there's a balance to strike between all, right,
we're playing meaningful baseball. We have to be at our
best still, and so we're like warmed up for the postseason.
But at the same time, you also want to make
sure that you're getting your guys the rest that they need.
You're making sure that like your pitching lineup is like

(48:53):
you're taking the breaks you need to that you're resting
your guys. But I think in the Dodgers case in
particular two you mentioned it, guys coming off the il
right at the right time, because this is giving you
just enough time to really warm back up and be
a factor in this I just looks it looks so
bright for the Dodgers right now.

Speaker 2 (49:14):
Knock wood, knockwood, knock all the things now.

Speaker 3 (49:16):
But the thing that's crazy about baseball too, talk about
being a long season. There's still I believe thirty three
games to go, So no, that's true, so much time,
but they are getting out the right time. Right now,
Things like very bright for them, and hopefully it continues
that way because they're fun, and I think they'd be
a fun playoff team and be fun to watch.

Speaker 1 (49:32):
It would be. And also yeah, I mean I feel
like now that football is starting and everything, I'm like, oh,
it's fall, We're playing fall baseball. It's like it's not
quite September yet getting.

Speaker 2 (49:40):
There, but very soon, but very soon, very soon.

Speaker 1 (49:42):
And I do think that all right, Like, if you're
looking at the way, especially the National League is going
to shake your shape up. Like I'm looking at standings
right now, you've got the Dodgers, Brewers, Phillies, d Backs, Padres, Braves, Mets.
That's or even in the mix.

Speaker 2 (49:58):
That's or even in the mix?

Speaker 3 (50:01):
Is this a year ago the Bets were like barely functioning,
but they are even now.

Speaker 1 (50:05):
I mean, listen, I'm from Chicago. We have two teams
in Chicago that can't make any sort of noise. It
comes there a little far back. But I mean the
White Sox they've won thirty one games all year.

Speaker 2 (50:15):
Yes, it's a rough it's a rough go, it's a
rough face. They've won less games than are left in
the season.

Speaker 1 (50:20):
You didn't need to say that.

Speaker 2 (50:21):
I'm sorry, but it's just true to say that. I'm sorry.

Speaker 1 (50:24):
Everyone's like clowning on it, like, oh, look, who's your
white sox. I'm like, I know, what else do you
want me to say? Like, I'm not I had no hope.
I haven't had hope in a long time. But I
don't know. I mean, like, if anybody, if it's not
the Dodgers, like, who do you think it comes out
of the NL in the World Series?

Speaker 2 (50:41):
Well, I feel like this is a mean question to
ask me.

Speaker 3 (50:45):
But if, like in some weird bizarro universe, it's not
the Dodgers, I actually think it is the Phillies. They're
another team that I think they're fun there. They've got
great chemistry, which doesn't always matter in baseball, but I
think it matters more and more as we were talking
about the Dodgers, and I think they are a very
fun team. And if it's not them, the one that
would pain me, just dagger to the heart would be

(51:06):
the Padres.

Speaker 4 (51:07):
Yeah, I know, weather fifth place in the I know,
but I'm gon, who's the two fun teams other.

Speaker 1 (51:15):
Than the Yankees? Then let's let's go on the other side.
Just because I have you in the studio, you're a
huge Dodger fan. If it's not the Yankees. Who you want?
Who do you want?

Speaker 2 (51:22):
Who do I want them to play? I want revenge.
I want them to play.

Speaker 3 (51:25):
The revenge is a dish best served cold in October.

Speaker 1 (51:31):
Cold in October.

Speaker 2 (51:32):
Moving into the beginning of November.

Speaker 1 (51:35):
Although between LA and Houston those are not cold climates.

Speaker 3 (51:39):
Know they're not, but still, let's just go with the metaphor.

Speaker 1 (51:45):
It's still fall. Uh yeah, No, I'm I'm very interested
to see how this season like actually wraps up, because,
like you said, I think there's just so much more
drama towards the end of it, and like we're it's
gonna come down to the wire and like in a
couple of weeks here, we're really going to be like,
like it's going to be dominating some new cycles even
with the NFL in full swing. But you guys, we
come back. We've got some drama in Pittsburgh. We're gonna

(52:09):
talk about it. Who Mike Tomlin decides to name his
starting quarterback. We'll see, We'll see how the other side
of this break. This is Fox Sports Radio. So many

Speaker 1 (53:18):
There it is. We'll have it up for you as
well as always. But now we spent some time talking
about baseball, but we're gonna get back into some NFL
because Steelers and the Lions played today. M HM, and
as fatigued as we are. At the third week of
the preseason. I was tuning in and I like, I'm like, God,

(53:42):
I'm such a sicko, Like we're all just sickos. Like
looking forward to the Steelers Lions third preseason game. Lions
didn't play any of their starters. The Steelers did, and
not only did they play their starters, they played their
starting offensive line and their offensive starters with two different
quarterbacks because apparently this decision is not made. Russell Wilson

(54:06):
took the start of the game, played one series, went
two for two, went down the field, scored, wasn't much
else you wanted him to do, made a couple of
good throws, it was, you know, some good runs, all
that other stuff, and then was immediately pulled and i
was like, all right, after that happen, I'm like, that's it,

(54:27):
Like that's the decision. They made their decision. Russell Wilson
kept his pole position and he's going to be the
starting quarterback. Well, then Fields goes out again with the
starting offensive line and he goes down the field and scores.
His best throw was on an RPO, which is something
that doesn't really require a lot of reading, so like

(54:48):
you read the defense to see whether or not you
keep it yourself, or you hand it off or you
throw it. And he did and it was like a
twenty two yard game, I want to say, and he
ends up scoring or leading a scoring drive. So then
you go, oh, wait, is the decision made? And then

(55:08):
Justin Fields goes back out there for two more series.
The next series was an absolute disaster because the ball
was snapped. Fields was not aware it was a communication
error with the center and it just goes whizzing past
his head. So fumble wasn't really that clean. I saw
him take a hitch on a handoff and I'm like,
what are we doing? Where's the footwork? And then he

(55:31):
goes back out for the third series, hits Van Jefferson
for a first down, but then the series ends on
a sack that Fields takes, and like, that's been my
whole thing about this quarterback conundrum in Pittsburgh. I think
we've lost the plat Tracy because we're dealing with like
two bottom third quarterbacks if we're going off their twenty
twenty three numbers at the end of the day. So

(55:52):
I think what the Steelers now need to ask themselves
is do we see either of these guys being with
this franchise past this season or are they just rentals now?
If you can see one of them be here for
the long term, if you're trying to find a long
term solution, So if that answer is maybe or yes,

(56:13):
then like go with the guy that has the upside,
which I get justin Fields is not a rookie anymore.
Trust me, I know I watched them all in Chicago.
He's played a lot of football. But can you bet
maybe you bet on Arthur Smith to be able to
resurrect Field's career like he did in Tennessee with Ryan Tannehill.
Maybe you bet on him to improve Fields as a passer.
And then if you can do that, And this is

(56:34):
why I think people are this is the for Fields camp,
because like he's such a dynamic runner and he's an
amazing athlete, and if you can actually get a really
good passing game along with his running ability, and he
becomes that dual threat quarterback that we all want him
to be that is so hard to stop. And he's young,
he's twenty five. Yeah, so you could have you could

(56:56):
have your long term answer at quarterback for a really
long time. But there's so many what ifs in that scenario.
So then if you don't think that either of these guys,
they're both, these guys are just one of your rentals,
are not going to be with the team, then you
need to go with the guy that stresses your defense,
your own defense the least as in gives the ball
over there turns, doesn't turn the ball over, doesn't take sacks,

(57:19):
can sustain drives, keep the defense off the field, all
that other stuff. Historically that has been Russell Wilson, though
that was not the Russell Wilson that we saw in Denver.
No that if you look at the twenty twenty three
stats between Dustin Fields and Russell Wilson, they're not very different.
Like Russell Wilson took forty five sacks, gave away ten fumbles,
or not gave away but fumbled the ball ten times.

(57:41):
Justin Fields took forty four sacks, fumbled ten times. The difference, though,
is that if you go back one more a year
and you look at field stats from then, he led
the league in both fumbles and sacks taken, where he
took fifty five sacks.

Speaker 2 (57:56):
It's great to lead the league in something, but maybe
not that.

Speaker 1 (58:01):
So we've seen Russell Wilson be able to take care
of the football. We've seen him be able to evade Sax.
Now can he still because he's getting older and he's
not as mumble as he used to be. I don't know.
But like this is the question we should be asking
of the Steelers, which is are either of these guys
going to be on your roster next year? And if
that's not the case, then just go with the safe option.

Speaker 3 (58:19):
Well, I don't think the Steelers know the answer that yet,
and so I think they're not. They may say that
they have a decision next week, is too the starting quarterback?
But I don't think who's ever the starting quarterback in
week one, as the starting quarterback in Week eight, and
potentially not the starting quarterback in Week five, Like I think,
in some ways for the Steelers, and I know fans
wouldn't want to think of it this way, and I'm sure
the Steelers would say that's not true at all, But

(58:39):
in some ways, the whole season is kind of like
a preseason quarterback battle for them to see if either
of these guys can do it.

Speaker 2 (58:45):
Because I don't know that either can.

Speaker 3 (58:46):
I mean Russell Wilson in the last couple of years
has not been the Russell Wilson vault. He was a
great quarterback, he did amazing things in.

Speaker 1 (58:53):
The battles, he won a Super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (58:56):
Incredible, but he hasn't been that guy has It wasn't
just not that guy in Denver. He wasn't that guy
the last year in Seattle, maybe the last two years
in Seattle. So I don't know that he's the safe
option right now. And then I think with Justin Fields,
when you talk about the three series today, yes, it's
the preseason, However, should be an opportunity for him to

(59:17):
show what he's learned, how he's progressed. And on one
drive he did and then the others he didn't. So
I just I feel like it's like a preseason quarterback
competition for much of his season.

Speaker 2 (59:28):
Now.

Speaker 3 (59:28):
I think that's really careful because if they look at
the upside being Justin Fields, I actually think, but they're
not sure he's ready, They're better off starting out with
Russell Wilson and replacing him with Justin Fields than doing
it the other way, because you do it the other
way and it's basically over for Justin Field.

Speaker 1 (59:41):
Yeah, I mean, and the Steelers are resilient because of
that defense. I mean, Mike Tomlin has never had a
losing season and it's because of his defenses. And if
you look at last year, the Steelers made the playoffs
with a revolving door at quarterback. I mean you had
they survived Canny Pikett, Mason Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky all
in a run.

Speaker 2 (01:00:00):
Them a true bisky part.

Speaker 1 (01:00:01):
Right, I did too. Actually, when I was like doing it,
like I was looking back on my notes and I
was like looking back to Steeler season, I was like, oh,
that's right, Mitch. They're just taking like the scraps from Chicago.
But that's all to say. I mean, they survived that.
And I don't think that the expectations are for the
Steelers to make a super Bowl run even this year.

Speaker 2 (01:00:19):
No, I mean so, I don't think so, not with
either of those guys.

Speaker 1 (01:00:23):
But I do think that they could still maintain a
winning season even if you have some variety at quarterback.
Shall we say, well, I.

Speaker 2 (01:00:32):
Like that variety, yeah, but it can't be Here's what.

Speaker 3 (01:00:34):
They can't do. They can't be bouncing them back back
and forth. No, once they make the decision.

Speaker 2 (01:00:38):
Once you make it, you make it and you deal
with it.

Speaker 3 (01:00:40):
And you if you start with Russ and then you
bring Justin fields in week six, no matter what, Justin
feel's got to be your guy.

Speaker 1 (01:00:46):
I this is something I learned from Bruce Arians. I
was when I was in Tampa. I was, I was
with Tampa for six years. Got was so fortunate to
land with an organization that gave us like a ton
of access. I traded in autonomy for what I could
write for the access that I had. But what I
learned I remember Bruce arian saying, is like, if you
have two quarterbacks, you have none, right, and that has

(01:01:09):
been the case. And then even going back before Bruce
got there, we saw a quarterback battle between Ryan Fitzpatrick
and Jamis Winston where like every time these guys go
out there, they're looking over their shoulders, so they're trying
to force plays, they're trying to make like they're not
playing their brand of football because they're worried about the
guy behind them, because they're going in and out and
like it's not a good situation. So I think you're
entirely right that if they do make a change, it

(01:01:31):
has to be permanent no matter what, and you're just
deciding you're going to ride with Justin Fields the rest
of the time. But it is I honestly don't know
what the like we're talking about the Lesser of two Evils.

Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
And I think they start the season with Russ That's right.

Speaker 3 (01:01:44):
Yea, they started the season with us, but I feel
strongly they do not end the season with the rust that.

Speaker 1 (01:01:49):
It's interesting to me too, because when you talk about
like game planning and these guys going out there, like
the first series of a game, like the first fifteen
plays are always scripted, so you're going out there knowing
exactly what you're gonna run, no matter what the defense
is doing against you, because that is how coaches see
how the other team is gonna play you. And then
that's where you start like the chess match of play

(01:02:10):
calling all this other stuff. So like we've seen Justin
Fields be good in those situations when he knows, like
he goes out on the field and he knows what
he's gonna do. So I'm like, I'm wondering too, is
there a situation where you do have Russell Wilson as
your starting quarterback, but then you just bring in Justin
Fields on some like packages and different plays.

Speaker 2 (01:02:28):
Taysom Hill situation like it's Taysom Hill situation.

Speaker 1 (01:02:30):
I mean, he is such a dynamic runner and such
a wonderful athlete that you could throw in some fun
little wrinkles and do an offense using Justin Fields, putting
two quarterbacks out there, I mean good or switching him out,
you know, just like for Russell Wilson and like running
basically a wildcat even though he's a quarterback. I don't know.
I think there's some interesting fun things to be done.

Speaker 3 (01:02:49):
I mean, Michigan did a little bit of that last
year with Alex Orgie, who very well, very well, maybe
their certain quarterback this year, but they did a little
bit of that at times. They take JJ out and
put him in for Alex in for those kind of plays.
But I just I don't know if Pittsburgh's built that way.
I also know if Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are
built that way and the whole other thing.

Speaker 1 (01:03:08):
Doesn't the defense kind of insulate to you against your
offensive performance anyway to a point I don't know. Well,
somebody who insulates our offensive performance. That's Brian Finley, and
we're gonna go do an update break.

Speaker 9 (01:03:18):
Yeah, hey, what is going on.

Speaker 8 (01:03:19):
We've got NFL as you've been talking about college football
as well. Georgia Tech winning a stunt or twenty four
to twenty one against number ten Florida State and week zero,
dj Uungala Lay, the quarterback for Florida State, had one
hundred and ninety three yards passing.

Speaker 9 (01:03:34):
But Carmen and In Tracy I was pointing this out.

Speaker 8 (01:03:38):
I saw this, and it was thirteen of ujungal Lay's
nineteen completions were thrown five yards or less.

Speaker 9 (01:03:43):
Oh down the field. That's probably not a good stature.

Speaker 4 (01:03:46):
Should that?

Speaker 1 (01:03:48):
Yeah, Like, yeah, you have to separate air yards. That's
what you have to do. You have to separate air
yards like what these guys are actually doing, because then
it's just your receivers at that point.

Speaker 9 (01:03:56):
Yeah, well said.

Speaker 8 (01:03:57):
And it was a forty one yard field goal that
won things at the end of the fourth quarter for
Georgia Tech. Mike Norvell and his team, the number ten
right team in the country, served in l to the forehead. Also,
I think that's a reference to some sort of song
that we might.

Speaker 1 (01:04:11):
Have growing up.

Speaker 8 (01:04:12):
Yeah, that was I was probably like, what fifth sixth grade.
I can't even remember what year that game.

Speaker 1 (01:04:17):
Yeah, honestly, All Star cod All Star Yeah wow yeah
on our forehead.

Speaker 8 (01:04:26):
Yeah yeah, yeah, that's that's one of the greatest songs
for you. Yeah, the childhood that we all hope to
have and had. So we had that game obviously going on,
but we also had other ones. One involving this New
Mexico squad. They are up in a contest that can
be seen right now on FS one. New Mexico is

(01:04:48):
taking on Montana State and right now it is twenty
four to fourteen New Mexico over Montana SY late in
the second quarter. That one is a game that you
can watch on our sister station F one. NFL preseason,
let's go there. Mike Tomlin's saying that he is going
to be naming a starting quarterback at the end of
next week, and from what I'm hearing from you two,

(01:05:11):
it sounds like you're not so sure about it.

Speaker 1 (01:05:13):
I know, I think that they've already made that sense,
you think they I just think it's Russell Wilson already. Yeah,
whether or not Fields ends up coming in later in
the season, but I think they're gonna roll with.

Speaker 8 (01:05:21):
Russ speaking to Russ as far as his numbers today
in their preseason game, have lost twenty four to seventeen
to the Lions.

Speaker 9 (01:05:27):
Two for two twenty six yards. That was it.

Speaker 8 (01:05:30):
And then you put in Justin Fields in next limited
duty three of four completions, two attempts, forty yards.

Speaker 9 (01:05:37):
He was sacked twice. Right now, there.

Speaker 8 (01:05:40):
Is a Charger Cowboy game. It's seventeen to three and
at the two minute warning in the second quarter, seventeen
to three Chargers over the Cowboys. Easton Stick has a
touchdown throw, the only so de caller to play in
this game so far for Los Angeles, and Trey Lance
has been getting sole quarterback duties for Dallas eleven of
seventeen through the year, eighty eight yards as a pick

(01:06:01):
and a sack. Bryce Young threw a touchdown pass and
limited duty played just the opening series for the Panthers
in their thirty one to twenty six preseason win over
the Bills. Also, we had other games that were going
on as well in the world of NFL preseason that
would include we mentioned the Chargers game against they're taking

(01:06:23):
on the Cowboys, and also the Ravens coming up with
a loss thirty to seven.

Speaker 9 (01:06:29):
Yeah, thirty to seven. The Ravens lose by way of
the Packers.

Speaker 8 (01:06:33):
And I'll throw this right back at you here now,
Tracy Carmen, the punter stout the last name, sixty nine
yard punt. He averaged over sixty yards in punting, so
not a bad weapon to have. And you know it's
preseason when I mentioned punting stats.

Speaker 1 (01:06:49):
No, I know that's true. But special teams is gonna
be It's gonna be important. It's gonna be im portant
this year, especially with the new kickoff rules.

Speaker 3 (01:06:56):
Can I give a fun fact about the Chargers Cowboys game?
Maybe not East and Stick versus Trey lance Er, two
of the best quarterbacks to come out of North Dakota State.

Speaker 1 (01:07:05):
There's your go see and their bouts go to half time.
It's actually twenty to ten. Now, looks at the Cowboys scored.
And now that we're talking cowboys, who better to bring
on than our wonderful friend, friend of the program, friend
of mine, friend of Tracy's, David Hellman, Fox Sports insider
hopest of the NFL on Fox podcast regularly appears on

(01:07:26):
FS one's programming and Will Dave, how's it going?

Speaker 7 (01:07:32):
It's going great? Y'all. I'm just you know, watching some
Cowboys Chargers third preseason game football, Like what could be
better than that?

Speaker 3 (01:07:39):
Really?

Speaker 2 (01:07:40):
Nothing?

Speaker 1 (01:07:40):
We were we were joking about how like just we're
all sickos. If you watch the third weekend of the preseason,
you're just a straight up sicco even and.

Speaker 7 (01:07:49):
Like I am a sicko. But like even in third
preseason game, like five snaps into the game, you're like,
what am I doing here? Like?

Speaker 1 (01:07:56):
Why? Why? Why? I know? I was like I saying
earlier that I was excited to watch the Steelers game
just because I wanted to see who they trotted out
first as far as quarterbacks go, and what could be
gleaned from that. I'm just like, oh god, what I
need to rebellion in my life? Anyway, I'm sure that
you've had that notion quite a few times covering the
Dallas Cowboys, a team you know, well, a team that

(01:08:19):
you worked for for a decade. What do you do
you think that Trey Lance is playing this whole game
or do you think he's not? They bench him after halftime,
and what have they seen from him up until this point?
Do they feel comfortable with him in his backup role?

Speaker 7 (01:08:35):
I think he'll go the whole way, and I applaud
Big Cowboys for that. I mean, they said it as
far back as the spring. Their goal was to just
get Trey Lance as many reps as humanly possible. I mean,
he's just a guy that has not played a lot
of NFL football. I do. I guess you always reserve
the right to be wrong, but I closed the book
on Trey being the backup quarterback pretty early in camp.

(01:08:58):
You know, he still looks like a that has a
lot that he needs to do. I think Cooper Rush
will be there back up, but Jerry Jones did say
he already thinks or he's already decided that Trey Lance
is going to be on the fifty three. So he'll
get to stick around and continue to develop. I'll give
him this. He looks better in Week three than he
did in Week one, but just a lot of a

(01:09:21):
lot of experience still needs to be gained, and I
think he's going to get some of it by playing
the rest of his preseason game.

Speaker 2 (01:09:27):
Yeah, but I just I think the thing with Trey Lance,
it's unfortunate, is that he's probably not going to get
a lot of it past this preseason game, and so
will he ever truly be able to develop? That is
the question?

Speaker 7 (01:09:39):
Yeah, for sure, And you guys know as well as
I do. Once the regular season starts here, you're looking
at getting like one or two reps per practice the
rest of the way. So yeah, I mean, he's he's
going to hit free agency without being a finished product.
So I'm rooting for the guy, but it's going to
be an uphill battle for him to ever pay off

(01:10:00):
that draft slot. I would say, Well, we.

Speaker 1 (01:10:02):
Were talking earlier about Brandon Ayuk, Trent Williams, guys that
are holding out, slash holding in for the Niners. Cowboys
have a drama of their own. When do they not
always always of Ceedee Lamb gunning to be probably the
highest paid wide receiver in the league. When are they

(01:10:25):
getting this deal done? Are they getting this deal done?
Obviously they have to think if they're trying to resign
Dak Prescott, that's gonna cost money. They need to get
a new deal for Micah that's gonna cost money. What
are they doing? Why? How is this deal getting done
before before the season starts? Are they just going to
force a really grumpy uh ceed Lamb to play on

(01:10:45):
the last year of his contract.

Speaker 7 (01:10:48):
What are they doing is such a perfect question for
the Dallas Cowboys at I.

Speaker 2 (01:10:51):
Never it should be their sled.

Speaker 7 (01:10:53):
I never, I never know the answer to that, But
I do, I do have I do know the Cowboys press.
Then I know the way that these things go for
the Cowboys. And look, there are two types of Cowboy deals.
One where the player is willing to slot in at
not the top of the market, and that deal will
get done and the Cowboys are happy to pay those guys.

(01:11:16):
And then there are the players that want the top
of the market. They want to be highest paid, they
want to have the most guarantees, the highest salary, and
these deals drag out and become dramatic distractions. We've seen
it with Dak Prescott. We've seen it with Zeke Elliott.
We've seen it with DeMarcus Lawrence in the past. Zach Martin,
ye Zach Martin was another one last year.

Speaker 1 (01:11:37):
We're in an offensive lineman advocate for himself and made
it dramatic.

Speaker 7 (01:11:43):
But the common theme is that when push comes to shove,
the Cowboys cave and you know it feels you know,
we're playing the final preseason games this weekend. It feels
like football is right around the corner, but there are
still fifteen days until the Cowboy Aways have to play
the Cleveland Browns. I know that's not a long time
in the grand scheme of things, right, but it does

(01:12:05):
probably give them ten more days to resolve this. Now.
Do I think it's a good idea to sign Ceedee
Lamb the week of the season opener and then you've
got to worry about his conditioning heading into a game
against one of the best defenses in the league.

Speaker 1 (01:12:18):
No, I think that's a terrible idea, But that's.

Speaker 7 (01:12:21):
The that's the reality that the Cowboys have put themselves in.
I fully expect CD to sign, it might not come
until the calendar flips to September. I don't know why
the Cowboys insist on doing things this way, but but
like we said, it's it's always a circus with these guys.

Speaker 2 (01:12:36):
Boo signs first, Brandon Auk or Ceedee Lamb.

Speaker 7 (01:12:38):
Oh Oh my god, Tracy, can you can you shed
some light on it?

Speaker 2 (01:12:43):
I mean, I I think get Brandon.

Speaker 3 (01:12:46):
I you've done, because if Ceedee Lamb has some monster contract,
then the four Ninitars are like then they're going to
have to cave even more than they're already gonna have to.

Speaker 1 (01:12:54):
Gave, Like, how these these two contracts going to affect
each other?

Speaker 2 (01:12:57):
Niners should get this done. A stap.

Speaker 7 (01:13:01):
History leads me to think, like, I just feel like
the I use situation's got to come to a head soon,
because eventually the Steelers are going to pull their trade
off or off the table, and if they do that,
then I you might have lost all of his leverage
and eventually just has to sign the deal that's on
the table if he wants to get a raised. So
I feel like I've been expecting to wake up to

(01:13:22):
the news that I you signed for two weeks. Same,
But I really, I really feel like it's coming sometime
in the next two or three days hopefully.

Speaker 2 (01:13:31):
Oh, I really really hope you're right.

Speaker 3 (01:13:33):
As someone who wakes up every day waiting for the
news to see what her day will look like based
on what the weather or not the news come right,
I very much agree with you on that let's get
this done.

Speaker 2 (01:13:43):
Yeah, BA signed, bau.

Speaker 1 (01:13:47):
I know, I guess like I hadn't really taken the
time to think about the fact that, you know, one
of these guys might be waiting for the other end.
They're like playing chicken, but just like in a fun way.
They're both like, Oh, I'm gonna sign when you signed, bro,
it's possible. It's possible, Dave. Like the thing with Dak
Prescott in Dallas is I and I think you and
I have had this conversation before. I think that because

(01:14:10):
the deal isn't done yet, there isn't a deal getting done,
like he is going to hit free agency. That doesn't
necessarily like throw the Cowboys out of the running, but
like I feel like he's gonna end up subjecting Dallas
then to the market and being like, all right, if
you want me, you're gonna have to outbid all these
other teams that are undoubtedly going to be in the

(01:14:31):
running for his services.

Speaker 7 (01:14:33):
You can never say for sure, And like the minute
I definitively say something, altee, you know, when it happens,
that's just the way it goes. But I really I
get the feeling that Dak was open to the idea
of an extension before training camp, and maybe even in
the early going of training camp. But now that we're
you know, now at the regular seasons in sight, Dak
Prescott worked really hard to have the leverage that he had.

(01:14:55):
You know, he got tagged and he played on it.
He came back from that injury. Part of the reason
that his initial contract extension went on for so long
the negotiation was because he fought tooth and nail to
have a no tag clause and a no trade clause
in his deal. So it seems counterintuitive to me for
an all Pro quarterback to throw that leverage away by

(01:15:17):
signing a deal before the start of the season. So yeah,
I mean, as it stands right now, I feel ninety
eight percent sure that Dak's going to play this season
on his current deal. And yeah, and we'll see what happens.
I mean, if he leads the Cowboys deeper into the playoffs,
then they've been thirty years, then maybe they'll throw caution
to the wind and say, all right, here's a blank check.

(01:15:38):
Whatever you want, you got it. But if he doesn't,
then then I think we are set up for a
heck of a bidding war in March of next year,
and maybe the Cowboys can keep him, or maybe there
will be five or six other teams that would really
like to have an all Pro quarterback. It's the most
fascinating storyline in the NFL just because it's so rare

(01:16:00):
and stop thinking about it.

Speaker 1 (01:16:01):
And the Cowboys only have themselves to blame. But Dave,
thank you so much for coming on and joining us,
because I feel like you're on the show a lot.
But hey, you know what, there's always so much to
talk about with the Dallas Cowboys. So I have a
great rest of your weekend.

Speaker 7 (01:16:14):
Happy to do it all anytime, and.

Speaker 1 (01:16:16):
Happy college start of college football. Let's go go Jackets, Jackets.
That was Dave Hellman, Fox Sports in the NFL Insider,
hosts of the NFL on Fox podcast. When we come back,
we have the feel good story of the week. You're
listening to Fox Sports Radio. I don't even want to like,

(01:16:37):
I don't even want to start talking. I just want
to keep going. Let's go, Chris.

Speaker 11 (01:16:43):
Unfortunately, it is our job to talk. I know, not dance.
I know it's not official media, but we could dance.

Speaker 1 (01:16:49):
It used to it used to be my job to dance.
It was the dancer growing up. Love it, Thank you.
It is a party here on Fox Sports Radio. Karmavitally
in for Alex Curry. Such a great afternoon with Tracy
Sandler Fangirls Sportsnet. She's second week in a row, just
first one off the bench. We just love having her here.
Alex Is at a wedding, So we've been hanging out

(01:17:11):
all afternoon with you guys. Thank you so much for listening.
Thank you so much our producers for a great show,
Thank you for the vibes. And now to keep the
vibes going, the feel good vibes go. We've got our
feel good story of the week. We like that, we
love it. It's a two parter for me. So there

(01:17:32):
was the initial interview. USA flag football quarterback Darryl Dustt
talked about so flag football is being out of the
Olympics in twenty twenty eight while it's here in the
US amazing, right. He was like, I don't think that
it's fair that these NFL guys are just assuming that
they're going to come in and beyond the roster, like

(01:17:53):
that's just that's he you know, talked about how it's
a different game, and it's true. I mean there's different
rules that it is. It's a completely different game. The
rise of seven on seven two in the developmental leagues
and like, as you know, the youth leagues two, it's
just a different kind of football. But what I thought
was hysterical was then this guy, like I love the

(01:18:14):
irrational confidence, and that's why this is the feel good story,
because like, if you're good at what you do, like
you just need to think that you're the best. That's true,
and clearly Darryl Jussette does because then he said that
he thinks he's better than Patrick Mahomes.

Speaker 2 (01:18:29):
But you know what, in fairness, I have not seen
him play.

Speaker 1 (01:18:33):
No, that's sure, that's a thousand. Maybe he is. He
is the Patrick Mahomes of the USA Flag football. But
what was the funniest part of all of this was
then Patrick Mahomes got a hold of this video of
him saying of Daryl saying that he's better, and Patrick
Mahomes like quote tweets it with the fifty cent like me,
what me? Like, Giff, you haven't seen it, go check
it out on Twitter slash X. I thought it was

(01:18:55):
good natured fun, and I do think that there's gonna
be some fun kind of dynamics around all of this
once it comes time for that team to be picked
to represent Team USA in the Flag Football.

Speaker 3 (01:19:06):
Olympics, and it's it is the Summer Olympics. Yes, yeah,
so that will well. Also interesting is that we'll conflict
with training camps, right, so that will be kind of interesting.
And let me tell you who would be like really
mad if Patrick mahomes, like God forbid, tore his ACL
in the Summer Olympics and the Chiefs would have a
they would not be happy. So it'll be interesting to

(01:19:27):
see how all of this gets navigated. But when you
ring up Patrick Mahone's Twitter X, I also just want
to give him credit. He's really good on social He
is really good on He's really good on social. He's
good in the commercials, but he's really good on social.
He It's fun It's rare that.

Speaker 1 (01:19:39):
You see a guy like at his level, who is
unquestionably the best quarterback in the league right now, also
be a participant in Yeah so on social media and like, honestly,
Kayleb Williams is really funny. I feel like all these
young guys coming out of college who are used to
kind of having the brand deals and ail and all
the other stuff like balancing social media with everything, Like
gone are the days where it is frowned upon to

(01:20:01):
like talk on social media if you're an athlete, Like, now,
this is just a second language to these guys.

Speaker 3 (01:20:05):
Yeah, that's how they've lived their lives. Yes, that's how
they've talked to their friends. Like they just talk to
their friends on Snapchat, they don't text. Like it's a
whole thing.

Speaker 1 (01:20:12):
Now it is a whole thing, and I think it
gives us a glimpse into their personalities, and it gives
us a glimpse into like who they are as people,
which I think is always a good thing. I agreed,
But you're right, this whole how the flag Football's football
team is going to be decided on when it's going
to come up against training camp, It's gonna be very interesting.
I can't imagine that the NFL is going to let
like their top guys take that injury risk or do

(01:20:34):
any of that.

Speaker 2 (01:20:34):
No chance.

Speaker 1 (01:20:35):
But anyway, you guys, thank you so much for hanging
out with us today. I had so much fun with Tracy,
me and Meet. We had so much fun. We'll talk
to you guys next week.
