Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Well, that's right, you heard the man that time a week.
My name is Bernie Fretta. We are comedy live from

way tire buying should be. The fantastic, fantabulous weekend continues.
(00:30):
We're just halfway through it. We're just getting started. And
you know, movie producers, movie scriptwriters, they wrap their brains
and they're paid big money to come up with storylines
to keep your riveted. And one of the most difficult
things to do, of course, is to come up with
a great movie ending that will pay off the the
(00:51):
you know, the story from A to Z. And that
is why you've heard me say it a thousand times
and I'll say it again. Sports continue to be the
greatest reality invented, and you can script everything but the ending,
and a lot of times what I talk about on
Friday night can spill over into Saturday as we speculate storylines.
(01:13):
And there were a ton of college football games today.
But when you look at three marquee games that were
most I would say these three, by far were paid
attention to more than any other of all of them.
How's that for some broken English? To start the show,
one particular school pocketed one point four million. Then they
(01:34):
pocketed a victory, the biggest victory in school history, and
completely undone. What Notre Dame did the Texas A and
M last week. We're going to get to that a
little bit later. Then, of course, we spent a fair
amount of time on Dion Sanders coach or caricature, what's
going on with the program? Nebraska exacted big time revenge
(01:57):
that one of our callers that leads off my midnight hour,
Jim in Massachusetts, who I respect tremendously. We respectfully disagreed.
I thought Nebraska would win by ten. He thought Colorado
would win. I was wrong. Nebraska won by eighteen, and
it could have been worse that. That really wasn't an
indicator to the score, but the school. The matchup that
I'm closest to I was in Michigan in August sixth.
(02:18):
I'm still very close to that program. I've maintained all
my ties and I was told by some people, here's
what to expect this year. There were three things. One,
we're going to have a very good defensive front seven
and we've got Will Johnson, the best cornerback in football
in college football. Two we've got to start out the
quarterback situation, but we think we'll be okay. Three, we
(02:41):
don't have a lot of depth. The reason Michigan did
so well last year. You saw some poor tackling in
the game. They don't have the depth they had, not
even close. That was his tell. That was his tell
when he said two of the three things were relatively okay, stable, neutral,
but the third one don't have a lot of depth.
That told you everything. Texas dominated Michigan. They rode Michigan
(03:06):
like a stickhorse. That's just the way it was. The
National champ is done and we're barely out of Labor
Day a weekend, and I'm not saying her done for
this year. They can still, I mean, in this new world,
but you're gonna have the Trojans on the schedule, and
you're gonna have Oregon, and you're gonna have Old House stayed.
(03:28):
And I don't like their chances. And I'll tell you
the Michigan faithful, they're all you jumping ship on Shoan Moore.
I'm not going down that road. But you saw what
the issues were. And Davis Warren, he's got a fabulous
personal story. It turns out, you know, Alex Orgie, they
tried to head them the job. You know, let's not
go down that road again. What I want to talk
(03:49):
about is what happened Saturday and ann Arbor in the
Big House and to a lot of Michigan folks who
do honestly believe good people think it's their god given
right to just win games. Well, Saturday had to be
a bitter pill to swallow, because you're never gonna like
the way you lose. You're never gonna like the way
you lose. But this one was a particularly egregious because
(04:10):
right from the jump Texas completely controlled the game. Period
they imposed their will on Michigan. Score could have been
a lot worse. They had a touchdown callback, Michigan's excuse me,
touchdown at the end meant nothing, So thirty one to
twelve didn't sound as bad as maybe thirty eight to
three or something like that, which you more felt like.
And look, even Texas came out of the gay little jump.
(04:34):
He had some false start calls, got a field goal,
but then once they got going, Texas did whatever they
wanted to offensively, and the Longhorns on the other side
of the ball completely stuffed the Michigan offense. The Michigan
offense looked lack luster period. It was clear Stevie Wonder
could see Texas was the much better team, much more
prepared for the big game. I get it, Michigan lost
(04:57):
a lot of talent from last season. I also returned
a few star players, and they shouldn't look the way
they look. Michigan lost thirteen players to the NFL last year.
Get somebody, Texas lost eleven. Why did Michigan rebuild? There
are gonna be questions as the season goes on. Give
your More a chance to do his jobb he earn
the right, But I don't like what I'm seeing. Again,
(05:18):
You're not gonna like the way you lose. But this
is really bothersome. Luckily for Michigan, it's only Week two,
and the beauty of it is it doesn't affect the
Big Ten Conference. The Wolverinees goals are still ahead of them,
but I don't see it in the cookie jar number two.
Michigan's defensive line really didn't live up to their building. Now,
for that, I will give Texas offensive line a lot
of credit because they're better than you really realize. The
(05:40):
Longhorns run game, even down to two running backs, their
top two running backs are out look tremendous against Michigan.
It's very hard to stop Texas's passing game, and you
can't make them one dimensional. When you can't slow down
the run game. When you've got the kind of speed
and space that Texas has, it opens up running lanes
and Texas took advantage. Now, last week, Michigan held Fresno
(06:04):
State to nine rushing yards. No, this was not Fresno State.
With all due respect to Fresno State. Not only was
the run game effective for the Longhorns, quinn Ewers wasn't
even sacked one single time. He wasn't even pressured that much.
Go back and watch the game. I don't even think
they have the washers uniform. There were three quarterback hurries
the entire game, if you want to call them that,
and two of them were in the fourth quarter when
(06:26):
they were just mailing out the clock. Again, for as
much talent as Michigan returned on defense. They did not
like they had last year, but they did. They did
not live up to their billing. There were actually people
that picked Michigan to win. I was not one of them,
all right. Michigan's secondary was roasted, partly thanks to the
(06:46):
fact that the D line couldn't get home, couldn't get
much push or pressure. Quinn Ewers had a tremendous day
picking apart the Michigan secretary the secondary. Excuse me, Queen
yours is now a veteran. You're gonna give him time
to survey the field. He's got a lot of arm angles.
And the truth of the matter is he picked on
this one poor player for Michigan, a sophomore by the
(07:08):
name of jier Hill. He was only starting a second game.
It was a player who allowed the initial third and
fifteen on the first down of the first drive of
the game. He never fully recovered back on offense. Michigan
was terrible on third down. Now again, when I was
on with Aaron and VJ last week, I said Monday,
I said, Michigan got spoiled by j JJ McCarthy. He
(07:32):
wasn't asked to do a lot. But when he was.
He came through. McCarthy was a wizard on third down,
He was a wizard in the red zone. He was
a wizard in the fourth quarter. Michigan had none of that.
It was a game of third downs and the Wolverines
couldn't get any. However, Texas made a living on third
downs on Michigan's defense. It didn't matter. Long runs were
ten or fifteen on third down, including two conversions of
(07:54):
more than ten yards. The first drive of the game,
it basically told the whole story. Texas goes down. Score
was on an open drive field goal, but you get
a touchdown call back. The Longhorns converted three first downs,
including a third and fifteen. The tone was set right
there finally, and everybody can see this. I think it's
fair Michigan has a major quarterback problem. Now. They have
(08:15):
more issues than just quarterback. But after Wolverine fans were
completely spoiled by JJ McCarthy, who went twenty seven to one,
it's pretty clear Michigan doesn't have a succession plan right
now to have anything close to what McCarthy was. They've
officially returned back to the Jake Rudolph Wilton Spate era
of twenty fifteen Harbaugh's first year, except these guys are
(08:36):
not as good as those guys were. Now in the
fourth quarter, Davis Warren got into a little bit of
a role, but Texas was allowing for chunk plays. They
do this in the NFL, where they'll play deep, they'll
funnel everything to the middle of the field. They'll give
you seven, eight, nine yard completions. All you're doing is
running clock, so you can get the hell out of there.
Warren is he's nowhere near his ceiling. He's going to
(08:57):
be better than you think. But he's going to be
a game manager, which is okay, okay if the run
game and the defense are gonna be great, but there's
major concerns about both of those after the first two weeks.
Donovan Edwards hasn't exactly run the ball well. Neither have
the Wolverines, so Michigan's gonna have to show they can
get things going through the air for teams not to
stack the box against the run. And then again, Davis
(09:17):
Warren missed an open Somaji Morgan during the two minute
drill in the first half, and then Colston Lovelin fumbled
the ball away to Texas. Fortunately, Michigan might get healthy.
Next week, they get Arkansas State on the docket at
home and they maybe can figure things out and you know,
get no rest for the wicked USC comes in the
following week. So you're not gonna like the way you lose, ever,
(09:39):
but the way Michigan lost is particularly bothersome. Now, after
the bottom of the hour, we are going to get
in to the Colorado game and Dion very much, and
we're gonna get into Northern Illinois and Notre Dame. And
I cannot believe how people are bashing Marcus Freeman. They
want him fired. Okay, can we pump the brakes a
(10:02):
little bit, Although if you're Notre Dame fans, you're gonna
be a little chippy because this is the third time
in the past two years that Notre Dame has lost
at home as a massive favorite. Twice in twenty twenty two,
they were a twenty point favorite against Marshall lost twenty
six to twenty one. Later that season, they were a
(10:22):
sixteen point favorite against Stanford, lost sixteen to fourteen. Coincidentally,
not ironically, irony is when the firehouse is burning down. Coincidentally,
they lost by the same score Saturday to Northern Illinois
as a twenty eight point favorite. That's a total of
sixty four points. Is a favorite at home in the
last two years. And Notre Dame was lost out right
(10:45):
not good. You never like the way you lose. But
we're gonna get back into that after the bottom of
the hour. But I want to bring in a gentleman,
a good friend of mine, spent twenty years at ESPN.
We have to dive into the NFL. There are all
kinds of storylines as we are less than ten hours
check that, twelve hours away from our first slate of
Sunday games. So many storylines. What's really going on with
(11:08):
Jordan loves Yeah? Three weeks or six weeks? How did
Russell Wilson? I don't know what happened. He was listened
as questionable, which means nothing. Now I'm hearing he's not
starting Sunday. We gotta talk about the Jets. We got
to talk about the Cowboys, we got about we gotta
talk about Jamar Chase, and I gotta start talking normal
so you can understand me. David Bierman coming up. I'm

All right back at the Bernie Frattle Show Fox Sports Radio.
We are coming to you line from Theetarre dot com
studios here in Las Vegas. Just getting started. We'll take
you up to three am Pacific, six am Eastern. It's
welcome and a gentleman knowing him for years, twenty year
veteran of VESPN left about a year and a half
ago to join the Pro Football Network as their chief
(12:38):
content officer, and all of our phone conversations they get
so candid and good. I said, why can't we do
this on the air. He's been on the show once,
but we got to get him on more often. Say
hello to David Berman, David, how are you, Buddy good Bernie?
Speaker 7 (12:51):
Happy to be on. I know we talk about it
a lot, and I'm happy to be here on the
eave of the season.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
How things out West, Everything's wonderful, and yes, I'm happy
to have you, and We'll got to do it more often.
But I want to dive in because we're we're less
now than eleven hours from kickoff or first football full
Slate Sunday, and just in the last twenty four hours
in the news cycle, there are more updates. It's start
with Jordan Love. There's reports all around the map. What
(13:18):
are your senses tell you? Is he more likely to
be out three weeks or more likely to be out
six weeks? That's a big difference.
Speaker 7 (13:23):
In my book, it is a big difference. And I
think for Green Bay fans out there, and of course
fantasy people who have Jordan Love on their team, I
have them on one of my teams. I think they
dodged the bullet that looked really bad at the end there.
And I don't think he's going to be out too
too long. And three to six weeks is the difference.
I've been told it's probably going to hit right in
the middle of four or five weeks. I don't think
(13:44):
it'll be as long as six, but it should be
longer than three. And obviously it all depends on how
the knee bounce is back. It didn't look good, but
he did escape any major acl injuries. But with the knee,
it's all depending on how the ligaments are. And you know,
I think every one of us have done something to
our knee one time in our athletic life. You know,
when I told my meniscus, I was out a lot
longer than Adrian Peterson was, so he suffered to me.
(14:06):
And you would hope that Jordan Love, we'll be able
to bounce back fat. I like that timeline. I don't
think it'll be anywhere near the long end of it.
I expect to miss about a month. I'm not a doctor,
I'm not a trainer, but it looks like he dodged
what looked to be a much worse injury than it
actually wounded up being.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
Yeah, and so to injury he happened at the end
of the game to fly home on a loss. And
I was just in Green Bay last month and they
were so enthusiastic. But such his life in the NFL.
How about the Steelers and Russell Wilson. I am not
a justin fields guy. I can list all the reasons why,
but all of a sudden, out of nowhere, here I guess.
(14:45):
Here's my question. Is it true that Russell Wilson is
not starting? And if so, why not? Because he was
listed as questionable some kind of calf injury or something.
Then all of a sudden, I hear something today that
he's out Week one. Is that report true? And what
can you tell us?
Speaker 7 (15:03):
It hasn't been officially ruled out. Russell Wilson is dealing
with a calf injury. He was limited all week in practice.
The latest that I have heard is that he's going
to try to give it a go. But that doesn't
mean the team's willing to give it a go. Russ
wants to play, Russ wants to test the calf out.
I have a feeling that decision has already been made
(15:24):
because Justin Fields has gotten first team reps this week
that you'll see Justin Fields week one. Ultimately, I'm with you.
I'm not a big fan of not only Justin but
I don't think Russell Wilson's the old Russell Wilson of
old as we've seen the last couple of years in Denver.
I think Pittsburgh has a problem here because not only
do you have two quarterbacks that are not performing anywhere
(15:44):
near what we thought they would be in Fields and Wilson,
you got a potential controversy between the two of them
wanting to start. Russ was named the starter. Russ didn't
practice this week. All of a sudden, Fields is going
to start. Russ says he wants to go, he want
to give it a go, but the team may hold back.
Now you're talking about a controversy, and listen, all the
(16:04):
years that we've watched the National Football League, there's plenty
of controversies to talk about. There's one team that has
escaped most of them, and that's the Pittsburgh Steelers. They've
been steady with the owner, they've been steady with the
head coaches. Only two head coaches in the last three
head coaches in the last forty five fifty years, and
they've been steady with quarterbacks from Bradshaw to Big Ben
(16:26):
and anybody between. There hasn't been the whole food coach
on the hot seat order selling the team who's going
to be the quarterback. That just doesn't happen in Pittsburgh.
It doesn't. And now you have a situation where you
may not know who the starter is week to week,
and that's not something Steeler fans.
Speaker 8 (16:42):
Are used to do.
Speaker 7 (16:43):
You have a question, just call me, as a Dolphins
guy for the last million years. You've got a quarterback problem,
I'll tell you how to work through it. But to
see justin Fields later, today, tomorrow, whatever time's on your end.
And Russell's not going to be happy about it, because
it's the best thing for the Wheelers is for Russ
to test it out and think you can't go and
(17:04):
then you have no problem with who the quarterback is.
But Rust seems to want to give it a go,
which may cost some issues in the Steel City.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
So more than meets the eye, they're not too different
than the Jets. We've got to talk about the Jets.
I don't want to fast forward our weekend. I'm really
looking forward to the game Sunday and Sunday night game
rams lines. But there's an interesting side story Monday night
in San Francisco. As you recall, Leonard Floyd was the
(17:32):
defensive end who was playing last year who sacked Aaron
Rodgers and caused the knee injury as it were, and
killed Green Bay season. Well, guess who's starting at defensive
end for the forty nine ers Leonard Floyd, And he's
already said he wants to tackle Aaron Rodgers. But I'm
(17:53):
getting ahead of myself. What's your outlook on the Jets,
because quite honestly, David, I believe you'd agree with this.
On paper, They've got an elite defense and with less
than below average quarterback play last year, they managed seven victories.
If you just get a reasonable fact similey of Aaron Rodgers,
they can get that to ten wins. That's a big if. Okay,
(18:13):
it's a big if. Your thoughts on the Jets and
what's reality?
Speaker 7 (18:17):
I think that the Jets is the most intriguing question
of the NFL season as we're on the eave of it,
because I've been asked this question on a dozen different shows.
By definition, you're having an upgraded quarterback. Aaron Rodgers played
four plays last year, So as long as he gets
through somewhat of the first quarter on Monday Night, he'll
have already been further than he was the year before.
(18:39):
On paper, this defense is a top five defense. They've
added some more weapons on offense. If you get Aaron Rodgers,
this team should go from your seven wins to a
playoff contender. But I'm not ready to put them in
the race with the Dolphins and the Bills to win
the division and as being a contender to win the
A because I think people have a short memory when
(19:02):
it comes to Aaron Rodgers. The last time we saw
a real Aaron Rodgers play, let's throw last year out
the window. He was was not making the playoffs, with
Green Bay losing in Week seventeen, not making the playoffs
and not having an Aaron Rodgers MVP season. Now he
gets shipped off to New York. Everyone's like New York
(19:23):
Aaron Rodgers, this is the big stories. He's gonna be gray,
You're gonna take the Jets of the Promised Land and
gets injured. You don't see him the whole year. We
talked about him non stop. The last time we actually
saw Aaron Rodgers in a full season, he was not
MVP Aaron Rodgers. He was rolled Aaron Rodgers. And now
he's two years older. As only one quarterback in the
(19:43):
history of the National Football League who has done anything
remotely good at age forty or older as a quarterback,
and we all know that's Tom Bray. So you're not
going to get an MVP Aaron Rodgers. Let's throw that
out the windows. So that's what you need, super is
an MVP quarterback of Pat Mahomes, et cetera, et cetera.
(20:04):
I think the Jets will be better. The Jets will
win nine to ten games, get a wild card spot.
You never know what happened with the Bills and the Dolphins,
and potentially could be in the race for the division
if neither one of the team. Remember last year, the
AFC East was one with eleven wins. It wasn't like
it was, you know, thirteen or fourteen. But I would
hold if I'm a Jets fan, I'd be optimistic they're
(20:27):
going to be better, but I wouldn't start printing tickets
to a parade down Broadway just yet.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
Talking with David Berriman Pro Football Network. As we moved
right along, we've got the Soap Opera Bowl in Cleveland.
Don't know what's going to happen with the Sean Watson
waiting to see that. But moreover, Dallas after three twelve
win seasons, my opinion, David, they're going off a cliff
this year. They're a nine win team, maybe an eight
win team.
Speaker 7 (20:51):
Your thoughts, I won't go that far, but I don't
think you're going to have what you saw last year,
which was a Dallas Cowboy team somehow steal the division
from the Evil. I think the Eagles go ahead and
win that division. The Cowboys make the playoffs as a
five six or seventy as a wild card. I have
them penciled in at ten eleven. The number I have
is ten and a half for the Cowboys. There's just
(21:12):
too much talent for this team to not win ten
or more games. Now, you never know, Dak could get
injured or see Lamb and all of a sudden you
hit that clip that you're talking about. There's just when
you go roster by roster by roster, this team is
way too talented to not win ten or more games.
It's just it between you're.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
Dead on, you're dead on, But what bothers me? Not
just two and five in the playoffs with act there
were four and five on the road last year. Continue
on and you're right.
Speaker 7 (21:39):
You're absolutely right. There are roadblocks there. They're four and
five on the road last year and they still won
twelve games in a division title. It's yeah, and you
know McCarthy's a super Bowl winning coach, and you got,
you know, an organization that is that is used to
being there. I'm not willing to say that they're a
super Bowl team, but I think they're going to. They
are who they are. They're a talented team with a
coach that can win regular season games well a quarterback
(22:01):
who has proven to win regular season games. And then
you're gonna have the same old adage. They get to
the playoffs and lose in the first or second round,
and then you have a coach that doesn't have a
contract and a quarterback who may not have a contract,
and it's the soap opera that as the world turns
in Dallas, I think it's just rinse and repeat, and
this is what Jerry has until he makes wholesale changes,
which could include himself. You're gonna have a talented roster
(22:25):
every single year with a big name coach and a
big name quarterback that's gonna win ten FUS games, but
not have the secret sauce to take it any further
unless everything adds up to them and they all have
great seasons and all of a sudden they figure it out.
I think their weakness is obviously running back right now
that they have the talent on both sides of the
ball to make it deep run, they just don't.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
David just got a minute, but talk about Jamar Chase.
A deal looks unlikely totally. He might see the field Sunday,
but his role will be limited. What's happening with Jamar Chase.
Speaker 7 (22:57):
He wants his money, he wants his bag. He's now
seen with the it is with See Lamb and Justin
Jefferson and Tyreek Hill, and he wants to be paid accordingly.
And he's going to try to play that game. But
as you saw, he played in practice late last week
and I think he's going to suit up, but he
has not been there enough to warrant one hundred percent
of the stats. I think you'll see him at a
limited capacity if I'm a Bengals san I'm just hopeful
(23:19):
that and glad that they're playing in the nilam Patriots.
We're going to be one of the worst teams in
football this year. Things I wish I could have said
any of the time over the last twenty years. But
I think you get a situation where the Bengals just
want to win in the dance and then deal with
Higgins and Chase next week.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
Well said David. Great stuff is always get some rest
of my man, and let's get you back on after
the season gets rolling so we can follow up and
see where things are.
Speaker 7 (23:43):
Would love to make sure tell all your listeners are
go to Pro Football Network for all of their football
fantasy vetting, and NFL News will be there all day
tomorrow with his staff all day long producing content.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
There you have it, Joy your football, sunny, David, Thanks
you chairman, Thanks for twenty years at ESPN. As you
can see, he's candid, doesn't pull punches, and there are
a lot of unanswered questions Sunday. That's part of the
reason we're watching. Colorado had three questions heading into Nebraska
last night. Wouldn't they be able to confuse freshman quarterback
(24:18):
Dylan Roola. Would they be able to win the turnover battle,
would they finally establish some summits of a running game?
Guess what? They went zero for three. We'll talk about
it coming up, but first we go to our guy,
the chef, Kevin Wyre, with the latest.
Speaker 9 (24:31):
Yes, Bernie, college football is back. We are in week two,
so we're starting to get into the full swing of things,
and we do have one game still going on around
the country. It may as well be over at this point.
This thirteenth rank USC shutting out Utah State forty eight nothing.
They've got two minutes to go. This game was delayed
(24:51):
because of a power outage at the coliseum, so that's
why they're still going late into the night over there
in Los Angeles. Everything else has on final just going final.
A few minutes ago, Arizona State holding off Mississippi State
in Tempe thirty to twenty three, and Oregon in the
Ducks having to escape against Boise State. They had to
(25:17):
line up and try a last second field goal.
Speaker 10 (25:20):
Snap, good placement, good kick on the way, it's good,
penally flave down, look like the Broad Coast Life.
Speaker 4 (25:28):
Have jumped off fight.
Speaker 1 (25:31):
In the initial idea that's it.
Speaker 10 (25:33):
Oregon has won their first game against Boise State in
four tries in a most dramatic fashion, great defensive stops
and a drive that gave him a great field goal
effort at the end it sapping and knocks it through
for twenty five yards and Oregon is two to zero
in that win column.
Speaker 9 (25:52):
That was the Oregon Sports Network from lear Field there
with a call as the Ducks get by Boise State
thirty seven thirty four. So that's a second week in
a row in which Oregon has had to come back
against a team they were favored against. And Notre Dame
Northern Illinois, this one resulted in the biggest program win
(26:13):
in program history.
Speaker 11 (26:16):
Snap Pole Jeters kick this fuck it fucked fuck.
Speaker 8 (26:20):
Picked up.
Speaker 11 (26:22):
Bestays put the biggest upset and au history.
Speaker 9 (26:26):
That was the Northern Illinois Sports Network a final minute
field goal to lift them over Notre Dame sixteen to fourteen.
It was a big matchup third ranked Texas tenth ranked Michigan,
and this one was a bit of a blowout. I
mean Texas show and they're for real thirty one to twelve.
The Longhorns win this one.
Speaker 4 (26:43):
Number eight.
Speaker 9 (26:43):
Penn State comes from behind win to beat Bowling Green
thirty four to twenty seven Number fourteen Tennessee fifty one
to ten winners at number twenty four NC State, Fifteenth
ranked Oklahoma survives a sixteen to twelve win against Houston,
Number sixteen Oklahoma State in two overtimes. They win it
against Arkansas thirty nine to thirty one, Number seventeen Kansas State.
(27:04):
They took a lead on a fourth quarter fumble return
for a touchdown to beat two Lane thirty four to
twenty seven, getting an interception in the end zone to
hold off a comeback attempt by the Green Wave there
in the final seconds. Illinois ten points in the last
ten minutes to win it twenty three seventeen against number
nineteen Kansas Iowa stayed a late fifty four yard field goal.
(27:25):
They come back against number twenty one Iowa twenty to nineteen.
Syracuse over number twenty three Georgia Tech thirty one to
twenty eight. And in NFL, Newspackers quarterback Jordan Love, he
could miss three to six weeks with a sprained mcla here,
hurt himself with just six seconds to go when the
Packers loss against the Eagles in Brazil, on Friday night.
(27:46):
Christian McCaffrey, he's been dealing with a calf issue. Was
limited in practice on Friday, though he says he will
play on Monday. And Jamar Chase, we were hearing that
being talked about and apparently he's being listed as having
an illness. So well, we'll see if he does take
the field at all for the Bengals on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (28:07):
Back to you, Bernie, all.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
Right, Jeff, Let's cut to the Chase Dion. In Colorado,
they were humbled in very embarrassing fashion by their rival
Nebraska on Saturday night. Shudur Sanders was hit more than
a Rocky Balboa, often and early and often again, sack
five times intercepted. The Cornhuskers defense was suffocating and before
(28:33):
the seats were even warm, the Buffs trailed by four
touchdowns at halftime, and they were completely able to unable
to take advantage of a true freshman quarterback Dylan Riola,
which doesn't surprise me. His dad played for the Detroit
Lions and so he's got some football chops. But the
numbers don't lie. This is gonna be Colorado's biggest problem.
(28:57):
You hear about the offensive line of the defense sucks
and they're not real discipline. And just look at them, okay,
really a lot of flash, a lot of bling, not
a lot of substance, nothing real, foundational or aspirational. They
can't run the damn ball. Colorado rushed for sixteen yards
Saturday night. Sixteen yards. You know what happens in football
(29:19):
When you can't run the ball. You become one dimensional.
When your one dimensional will become much easier to defend.
And when you can't run the ball, you are brutal
in short yard situations. Colorado's four to seventeen on third
down efficiency. That ain't gonna win games. Number two, you
don't punish the defense at all when you can't run
(29:41):
the ball. You don't wear down your opponent when you
can't run the ball, and you lose big time on
time of possession. Colorado tweled and trailed in time of
possession by a full eleven minutes. Shoodoor sanders only twenty
three or forty. These numbers were not good, and he
is chased all around. He's beat up hard, he said early,
he said off, and the numbers don't lie. Nebraska's physicality
(30:07):
was no match for Colorado. Welcome to the Big twelve.
The improvement that we were told about Colorado's offensive line
greatly exaggerated, and I knew it would be. You knew
it coming. We talked about it two weeks ago. Shador
Sanders time and time again had to pick himself up
off the turf and he had constant pressure. This dude
is still the first round draft choice, and he was
(30:31):
shaking because he made a very uncharacteristic, uncharacteristic mistake from
his own end zone. That pick stared down his hot
read guy read it jumped the route seven to nothing,
not it's fourteen to nothing, and that was it. Then
his brother Shiloh Sanders, the other son of Dion, who
plays for Colorado's their starting safety. Dion said at halftime
(30:53):
he thought he had a quote a broken form or
something like that. He didn't return. That's going to be
an issue. By the way, on the other side of
the coin, Nebraska showed they are built to compete in
the Big ten right. They ran for one hundred and
forty yards and Donovan I keep calling him Dominic because
that was his dad to play for the Lions where
(31:13):
I covered. He was twenty three to thirty for a
buck eighty five, but he was efficient when he needed
to be. Remember what I said about third down, you know,
red zone, etc. So with all due respect, Saturday will
go down as Shoedor's worst game in a Colorado uniform.
Only completed sixty percent of his passes, only two hundred
and forty four yards and the only comparison, if you recall,
(31:36):
Colorado got Molly Waptus Kevin Figures would say forty two
to six last year at Oregon, and Shudor had a
tough game that night as well. His sanders, his protection
just simply let him down. He could never get in sync.
They can't run the ball. To make matters worse again,
not only was the non existent running game there, they
only twelve rushing yards, mostly due to minus thirty yards
(31:57):
on sacks. They're started running back. You never hear this name, right,
Charlie offerdoal four rushes four yards? So what does this mean?
Colorado heads to Colorado State next week in a tremendous
in state rival. I'm trying to get Darren McKee on
from Denry's a fabulous guests because, by the way, Russell
Wilson returns to Denver next week as well. A Pittsburgh.
But if the Buffs needed something to really fire them
(32:22):
up and link their wounds, it could be no one
better than Colorado State. We recall last year that was
a fabulous game. Colorado State lost fifty two to nothing
in Texas. In week one they beat Northern Colorado. Both
teams are one and one. You have to wonder will
the injuries as Shallows Sanders and also Colorado State their
star receiver Tony Horton. Well that's going to be something
(32:42):
to watch. But right now, if you are the Colorado Buffaloes,
you got some major soul searching to do. I don't
know what you do. All the flashing dash. They starting
to wear very thin. They were really embarrassed. Had Colorado
not beaten North Dakota State last week, that had been one,
one and eleven in the last twelve games. But fifteen
(33:02):
buck if if some butts were canny nuts, you'd all
have a merry Christmas. We'll see what happens next week.
Tell you tell you the truth. I'm already very much
looking forward to it. And even if Colorado does win,
they've got a gauntlet ahead of them. I think they're
on their way to a four to five one season.
I'm serious, It's the way I see it. By the way,
football fans, be sure to tune into Fox Sports Radio
every Sunday morning, beginning at ten am Eastern seven am
(33:25):

Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app. Coming up.
We're not done. How about that one team. First they
pocketed a million four then they pocketed the biggest school's
(33:49):
victory in their history at Notre Dame's expense. We'll talk
about it coming up. And now the fans feel about
their coach. I'm Bernie Friddle. We're coming you live from
the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Tireck dot Com udios.
Keep it locked. You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show
on Fox Sports Radio. All right back in the Bernie
Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to you live from
the tarret dot Com studios here in Las Vegas. So
(34:12):
much to get to tonight, really just getting started. We
will be heavily into the NFL later in the show.
Coming up top of the hour, we resume Medina Magic
at midnight. We can't leave out the NBA believe it
or not training camps. Two weeks from Tuesday, we got
to get into Tom Brady's debut. Who could go worse
(34:33):
to first? In the NFL previews, some Sunday games, and
of course what the dance sensation sweep of the nation,
what kind of brand new fool you? And what my name?
In the two am hour Pacific five am Eastern. But first,
we already had the biggest upset, not even close of
the twenty twenty four college football season. No was in
(34:55):
the corn Huskers. It was the North Illinois Huskies. The Huskies,
a gentleman by the name of cannon Woodhull kicked a
thirty five yard field goal thirty one seconds left in
the fourth quarter, and then the defense held on and
unranked Northern Illinois strolls in to beat Notre Dame, who's
(35:16):
ranked number five, who they were ranked number five, sixteen
to fourteen.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
On the road.
Speaker 2 (35:21):
Now, this completely undoes what Notre Dame did to Texas
A and M last season, our last week, excuse me,
which was a huge road wind which really set their
path to the playoff. Just don't screw it up. They
don't screwed it up, but they made their path harder. Now,
Northern Illinois first ever victory versus a top ten opponent.
(35:43):
And like I said, Northern Illinois paid was paid a
million four to play in South Bend, and so they
pocket a million four, then they pocket of victory. Here's
a theme. Michigan's offense struggled, and guess what Colorado's offense struggle. Well,
guess Notre Dames offense struggled as well. For most of
(36:05):
the game, Riley Leonard completed just twenty to thirty two
passes one hundred and sixty three yards, no touchdowns through
two picks. He did rush for sixteen yards in a score.
But you know when it mattered most that you thought
they'd drive the ball down the field. They that final
drive was clunky and they had to attempt a sixty
(36:28):
two yard field goal that basically got blocked. And if
you're Notre Dame fans, this is deja vu all over again, yogi.
This is now the third time under Marcus Freeman in
two years that Notre Dame lost as a massive home
favorite twice in twenty twenty two, losing the marsh of
twenty six twenty one as a twenty point favorite, losing
to Stanford as a sixteen point favorite sixteen fourteen, and
(36:50):
then earlier Saturday afternoon sixteen fourteen, also to Northern Illinois
as a twenty eight point favorite. Offense of woes. End
of story didn't start that way. Everything started just play,
you know, just rosie for Notre Dame. The offense took
the opening drive seventy five yards thirteen plays, touchdown. All
(37:13):
is well, But the rest of the half, Notre Dame
only ran twenty nine plays for just eighty nine yards,
and that you know that included a Riley Leonard pick.
So through eight quarters to play this year, Notre Dame
is averaging four point six points per quarter. Those are
glaring offensive issues for a team that's gonna need offense.
(37:34):
That's why they brought Riley Leonard in. He's struggling. He's
the kid from Duke you recall last year that shocked
Texas A and M. He then, you know, goes to
Notre Dame and beats Texas A and M again, and
he had a very tough game. He only threw for
one hundred and forty four yards again again, twenty nine attempts,
three two picks and I know you can hang this
(37:56):
someone on again. Sound sound familiar. Notre Dame's offensive line
is young and they've got their issues. But Riley Leonard
didn't do himself many favors either. You know he if
you saw of if you want to pick up the
ward on Lincoln's nose last week against Texas A and M.
(38:17):
Leonard does not do well stepping up under the pocket
with any consistency for summer. It's just not his strength.
And you've got to operate from the pocket. You've heard
me say it a thousand times. Quarterback is a position
you play with your eyes. You have to have a
base level of talent with your arm and with your legs.
But you receive the ball, you make meles snapshots. You've
got to execute. And you know last year he was
(38:39):
getting those big chunk plays out of runs. That hasn't
happened the first couple of weeks. Notre Dame's offense continues
to stall, and the second interception that Riley Leonard threw
was terrible. Any there's no way you can slice it.
It was thrown severely late, it was very short of
his intended target, and that wound up being a real
turning point the afternoon for the fighting Irish. I wouldn't
(39:02):
want to be film watching film with those guys on Monday.
It's not going to be fun now, you know. Jeremiah
Love had a tremendous touchdown around a hurdle of defender
thirty four yards, which put Notre Dame ahead fourteen thirteen
midway through the third quarter. But that was it.
Speaker 8 (39:18):
That was it?
Speaker 2 (39:19):
And why doesn't that guy touch the ball more? Touch
the ball thirteen times all afternoon and after that epic
touchdown he only touched the ball one more time the
rest of the game. So you know what, where are
Notre Dame's wide receivers? And you know we do this
too often. Marcus Freeman is nine o'clock. That's not my decision.
(39:39):
That's what people are saying. And maybe they even miss
Brian Kelly, who knows. There you have it. Three epic
games today coming up, Mark Mendina, Medina Magic, don't forget
the NBA, we got it. Keep it locked with the
Bernie Fraddle Show.
Speaker 1 (39:52):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (39:55):
Yeah, that's right, you heard the man Bernie Fraddle Show
keeps rolling right A. My name is Bernie Fratter. We
aren't coming to lying from the tyrac dot com studios
here in Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio. Tyrac dot com
will help you get there. Un matched selection, fast free shipping,
free road hazard protection and over ten thousand recommend an installers.
Tyrack dot com the way tired buying should we Well,
(40:19):
you've heard me say it before. The future always has
a way of arriving ahead of schedule. NBA teams will
be in camp. It's right around the corner. There are
already plenty of storylines, including some drama. We're gonna get
to all of it. Three words. It's that time, Mark
Madina Medina Magic. After a couple week hiatus, I was traveling,
(40:41):
Mark was traveling. But we are back. We are back
and Mark welcome back in.
Speaker 8 (40:47):
How have you been, Bernie, I've been good. I mean
I just got married a few weeks A guess, I've
been on Cloud nine and Cherry on top of the Sunday.
Now Bastball is about to start, so it can't be
any more thrilled.
Speaker 2 (40:59):
Other than that, not much. What's going on?
Speaker 8 (41:01):
Yeah, it's some pretty quiet officism.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
There you go, hey, speaking to quiet. I gotta start
with this. I gotta start with drama. I got the
biggest kick out of Shaquille O'Neal's answer when he was
asked the other day by Miles O'Neil, who we believe
was the worst NBA player of all time, and I'm
not going to stay your thunder. Tell the folks who
he responded with.
Speaker 8 (41:25):
It's everyone's favorite punching bag, Rudy Gobert.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
Being a winner winner Chicken Dinner. What's going on there?
Tell us about what's going on there? Because Shaq was
dropping f bombs and everything.
Speaker 8 (41:36):
Well, look, I mean I think that right now it's
current and former players just grabbing a ticket of the
Delli line to express their the stage for Erdy Gobert.
I mean, the last, my last tally, it's been Shaquille O'Neal,
Dwight Howard, Draymond Green multiple times, anytime he can record
a podcast or be on TNT or you know, trash
(42:00):
talk or show cold on the court, and then I
think Miles Turner, they've all taken shots at Rudy Gobert.
Saying that, you know, his Defensive Player of the Year
awards aren't warranted and that for all the hype that
he gets as a defender, they feel that, you know,
his weakness has become exposed in the playoffs for a
(42:20):
not showing up in big games and b you know,
for how great he is as a room protector, some
teams try to hunt him into having to defend perimeter
players and therefore it shows that he can't defend all
five positions. And I think when you look at all
those players, they're known as defensive gurus. So you ump in,
you know, some potential professional jealousy and here we go,
(42:44):
a fun soap opera that rivals any reality TV show exactly.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
And I got to say this, I'm not going to
line up to defend Rudy Gobert. And I'm glad you
mentioned professional jealousy because how much of this is that
Rudy Gobert got two two hundred and fifty million dollars
and people don't believe he's really worth it.
Speaker 8 (43:03):
Well, I think it's the it's the green, and it's
the hardware. I think there's jealousy there, and I think
that you know, in fairness, there is FLETTID two. I
think some players feeling a type of way because of
the fact that you know, he hasn't won a championship.
He is a great defender, but the feeling is, if
you're going to award a defensive player of the Year award,
(43:26):
you know multiple times as Rudy Goldbart's gotten, you know,
he has to be able to make defensive impact, you know,
when the games count. And so I don't think that,
you know, even when you look at someone like Anthony
Davis and Draymond Green, they've been great defenders, but because
of some of the team shortcomings, they can't literally do
(43:48):
everything at once. And so I think in fairness, that's
really what's falling on Rudy Golbert's shoulders. But yeah, I mean,
until he wins a championship, they will get that ammunition.
But hear me out. I brought up some of these
things earlier in the season to Mike Conley, and he
made the argument to me this way. He said, teams
game plan for Rudy Goldbert on defense the same way
(44:11):
that teams game plan on offense for Lebron James and
Steph Curry. And the reason he's saying that is, you know,
he's such a force defensively and they really he really
forces teams to have to change their stouter report. So
he feels like the criticism is way too strong and
there's not enough appreciation for the fact that he's such
(44:32):
a great rim protector, and you know, he is only
one guy. He can't do everything at once.
Speaker 2 (44:37):
Mike Conley happened to be one of the really good
dudes in the NBA as well, so it doesn't surprise
me that he would make a classy statement. But I
got to tell you, I got such a kick out
of Shack, he says. He says, twelve points and eight
rebounds a game, I could f and do that s
right now. It's forty two. By the way, Just to
be fair, he said Ben Simmons was a bum too,
(44:58):
so it wasn't just it's just Rudy Gobert. But that's
how we start. We start with a little drama here.
But mark two weeks from Tuesday, teams will be in camp.
It'll be the first lobul date for the players. I
guess if you're part of the Celtics or Nuggets preseason
games in Abu Dhabi. But then the next day Tony
Camp's open up for all teams, so it's it's upon
(45:21):
us and what are your thoughts at the end of
the season.
Speaker 8 (45:24):
Well, I've started talking to some people around the league
as far as the landscape goes, and you know, it's early,
but most of the people I talk to, you know,
as far as different coaches and executives, they don't feel
like the Boston Celtics are going to repave because of
a few things. One that are the defending champs, but two,
most of their course back and they're on their prime
(45:47):
and they feel like, you know, the Celtics, you know,
they went through a lot of different growing pains with
all those trips in the Eastern Conference Finals and then the
finals lost against Golden State, and they felt like finally
they figured out how to win and maximize their chemistry.
And the fact that everyone's back, and you know, there's
always going to be question marks from Christos Porzingis in
(46:09):
his health, everyone else is pretty healthy and they have
good team chemistry. They feel like they're just going to
continue building off of that. That being said, the Celtics
aren't seen in the same vein as the Golden State
Warriors were when they had Kevin Durant where just felt
like this is a cheat code and may as well
fast forward to June. There are some other contending teams
(46:30):
like Oklahoma City or maybe Dallas, Denver in the East, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Philadelphia,
but it's very clear that there's an expectation at it's
going to be Boston and the rest of the field.
Speaker 2 (46:45):
Time with Mark Medina Medina Magic every Saturday night midnight
Pacific time on the Bernie Frattle Show. A couple of
individual milestones we may see this year, Lebron chasing fifty
thousand points and Steph Curry chasing I believe four thousand
and three points. Is that the right number?
Speaker 8 (47:01):
Am I wrong? Yeah? Well, look, I think that when
you look on Lebron James, the fact that he's the
all time leading scorer, he's always going to continue to
make history until the day he retires. The same thing
applies to Steph Curry, the fact that he is the
all time leader and three point shots made. But I
think we was just fascinating is that both Lebron James
and Steph Curry are playing at an all star caliber level,
(47:26):
even though they're tilting toward the latter part of being
in their thirties. And that's not to say that they're
the same players as they were in their prime, but
it's still pretty good. It's still all Star caliber, it's
still they're the best player on the team. It's still
as long as you have that player on the team.
(47:46):
Golden State and the Lakers technically have a little bit
of a window not only to make the playoffs, but
even the slim chance of winning the title. Now. I
don't think that's going to happen for either team, but
these players, Steph Curry and will le Bron James are
our generational talents for a reason. The fact that they're
doing this at this age, Lebron at thirty eight, Steph
(48:08):
at thirty six. They're coming off that Olympic gold medal
win where you know, both of them had to play
at a really high level just for Team USA to
win gold. It's a really testament to how well they've
been able to plug away here ever since squaring off,
ironically enough in the NBA Finals nine years ago.
Speaker 2 (48:26):
Not to be that guy, But isn't Lebron thirty nine?
Speaker 8 (48:31):
You know what you are? Correct?
Speaker 2 (48:32):
I believe Fortymber.
Speaker 8 (48:35):
Forty On December thirtieth.
Speaker 2 (48:37):
Here's why I bring that up because assuming he's still
playing and he should be in I agree with everything
he just said, please play at a very high level.
If he suits up and plays on December thirtieth, he'll
be the only NBA player in history to play as
a teenager and as a forty year old.
Speaker 8 (48:56):
That is wild.
Speaker 2 (48:57):
Yes, I'll take NBA trivia for fe Alex.
Speaker 8 (49:01):
Yeah, well how about this for NBA trva. I saw
Steve Nash play in his forties, but much different context.
He was so many yeah, yeah, stealing with so many injuries.
It felt like it was the game of operation. But
I still I still, I still remember though that even
with all those injury plagued games and a lot of
(49:23):
time in the training room, there was a game I
think in the twenty thirteen fourteen season that he was
playing a high level against Philadelphia and it was one
of those lightning a bottle type games where exactly replicated,
but you actually saw the Steve Nash of the Phoenix
Suns Dallas Mavericks. Uh for you know, a short window.
Speaker 2 (49:43):
I always like Steve Nash, and particularly was when he
was with Phoenix. But story for a different day. Uh,
you mentioned the Boston Celtics. Uh, you know, free agency
still sort of continues very much under the radar. I
believe Friday, Tristan Thompson finalized to one year deal to
return back to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Could Cleveland be a
(50:04):
thorn in Boston side this year or he's just going
to be Boston and everybody else.
Speaker 8 (50:09):
I think Cleveland's for real. I mean the fact that
obviously Donovan Mitchell is back and so is Evan Mobley.
That's obviously a good sign because there was I think
questions about or is the team going to blow up?
Is Donovan going to one out? I think that the
fact that they got Tristan Thompson. He's obviously has a
lot of championship success, but he's been playing marginal roles
(50:33):
in recent years, so it's not like he's a game changer.
Of the fact that he signed with the team in
September illustrates that. But I think when you look at
Cleveland's ceiling, they're training the right direction. Kenny Atkinson's a
really good coach. I think it was a good hire.
He's good player development, good on the offensive side of
the ball. But I think when you're looking at the
Eastern Conference landscape, they're most likely going to be fourth
(50:55):
in the West. Second round is their ceiling. But it
has not to do with any of their comments. It's
just that Boston's that good and you know, Philadelphia got
Paul Georgian, you know, injuries aside, and that is a
huge factor. But they have the right mix and I
think roster depth to uh, you know, make things interesting
(51:15):
for Boston. Milwaukee they're confounding. You know, there's a lot
of mixed feelings about whether they're the real deal, but
there is a pathway because they have Giannis, Damian Loward
now has another season, Doc Rivers, has a full training
camp that they could be at least a lot better
than the hot mess that they were last season. So
if I had to predict, I think it's Boston, Philadelphia,
(51:38):
Milwaukee and then Cleveland, uh and New York's to be
reckoned with. I might regret taking them fifth, but it
just shows how great of a conference the Eastern Conference
is and how good Boston is that you can't really
think that, barring major injuries, that Cleveland could be in
that championship contending mix.
Speaker 2 (51:59):
Yeah, it is tough to repeat, but I think on paper,
it looks like Boston. You don't want to get in
front of a speeding train. Let's go out West, wrap
it up with or two LA teams. I want to
start with the Lakers. One of the storylines it seems
to have disappeared under the radar, is JJ Reddick. He's
going to be making his head coaching debut, which is
(52:19):
another comment Shack made. He was all over the map
this week. He said he believes Reddick's going to struggle,
especially in the beginning. What are your thoughts, Well, I'm.
Speaker 8 (52:29):
A JJ Redick fan. I think he's going to be
a great head coach. But the questions, I don't know
whether he's going to be a great head coach when
he's with the Lakers, at least for the first season.
I think that he's The Lakers' success and failures have
very little to do with JJ Redick. And it's one
one thing that's always been carrying Lebron and Anthony Davis
(52:51):
ever since they've been together. How healthy can they play?
And subsequently, saving they're healthy, can they play at the
high level? And then the second thing is the roster construction.
You know, they brought back most of the team team's
roster last season that just fell in the first round
of Denver. Now there is a pathway for them to
improve from within because of continuity and the fact that
(53:13):
Gave Vincent and Jared Vanderbilt could be more available. But
there's already question marks about Jannered Vanderbilt's health. So I
think with JJ Reddick, he's going to be helpful with
having first year head coach energy, enthusiasm. He's a worker,
he's a bright basketball mind. I think at least from
in game adjustments, he could be in that positive compared
to Darvin Ham. But I think in the same token
(53:35):
he's going to have typical first year hiccups and doesn't
help that. You know, he's inheriting a very tough roster
that has even though Lebron's playing a high level, he
is going to be forty in December, and there's a
lot of question marks on the rest of the roster depths.
So he will struggle, but I think has less to
do with him and more to do with all the
external circumstances.
Speaker 2 (53:56):
I'm glad. I'm glad you mentioned health with the Lakers
because I was rightly corrected by one of my NBA
moles back in Michigan. I'll tell you what he said.
I said, look, what can you really expect out of
the Lakers? I think there's a seventh best, seventh best
team in the West. They basically returned to the same
team as last year. That's fair. Basically the same team.
Speaker 8 (54:16):
Yeah, basically, so well what I want to be The
Lakers will say, hey, they have reasonable optimism that gave
Vincent and Jared Vanderbilt will be a lot more available
and healthier.
Speaker 2 (54:26):
So that's okay. That plays into my question. I got
a little long winded there. I said, you know what,
I feel the Lakers are going to fall back because
they were healthy last year. His reply was, well, the
Stars were healthy, okay, but if you really watched, they weren't.
Their role players were not. You had Lebron and Ad
both played north of seventy games, but their role players weren't.
(54:48):
So they need their role players to be healthy. I
thought it was a pretty good observation in your thoughts.
Speaker 8 (54:52):
Yeah, and look, it's gonna always start with Lebron and Ad.
And I think that there's a danger when teams lament injuries,
the role players usually should overcome it. But I would
argue with the Lakers those injuries. It wasn't just role players.
They were key X factors and bridges between Lebron and
AD and the rest of the roster. What I mean
(55:14):
by that is, gave Vincent really good defender. He could
cover up the shortcomings that D'anngel, Russell and Austin Reeves
had defensively. Jared Vanderbilt, he would have given Anthony Davis
a lot more defensive help and not put so much
burden on Anthony Davis to do everything. And I think
with that it would have put the rotations more in
(55:35):
flux because you looked at ruly Hatchamora, D'Angel, Russell, Austin Reeves.
I think they all should have had bigger roles and
more consistent roles last season under Darbnham. That was part
of his own ondoing, But I will say it didn't
help matters that all those three players still were inconsistent
when they got playing time, and I think Jared Vanderbilt
(55:55):
and Gave Vincent would have been able to mitigate that. Now,
in this hypothetic conversation, if they were mostly healthy last season,
what would have done probably would have improved their seating
and would have had a face Denver in the first round,
but I think you know, their ceiling would have been
second round at best and nothing more.
Speaker 2 (56:12):
Mark last one for me, the Clippers getting ready to
you know, take residence into their new home, the Intuit Dome.
So I guess what are you more excited about the
clippers upcoming season or the slip knock concert next Friday night.
Speaker 8 (56:29):
Well, I'm not a good person to talk to about
that because I don't like slip Knots music.
Speaker 2 (56:34):
So there Saturday night too, just so you know they're both.
Speaker 8 (56:38):
Yeah, Now, if you're asking me, would I be you know,
looking forward to seeing the Clippers play or seeing Usher
perform in a few weeks.
Speaker 2 (56:45):
He's there in a couple of weeks. Yeah, it would
probably be Billy Joel.
Speaker 8 (56:48):
Yeah, yeah, Billy Joel. I've already seen him perform at Syracuse.
I'd love to see him perform again. So you know
that covey out of side. Yeah, I would be more
inclined to watch the talented musical acts into a zome
than the Clippers. But you know, look at Lisa. Clippers
have Kawhi Leonard. We'll see how many games he actually plays.
They have James Harden, but the fact that they lost
(57:09):
Paul George and the fact that you know they're trying
to carve their own identity by being in their own arena.
You can really only do that if you have a
winning product. Now, I think they're going to be competitive
because they have Tailu. They haven't blown up the team yet,
but you know it's going to be really tough sledding
because of the fact that Paul George is on the team,
and we just never know how many games Kawhi will
(57:29):
actually play.
Speaker 2 (57:31):
All true, and it's a very tough and crowded Western Conference. Right, Mark,
We're back and running. Next time we talk will be
about eight days from training camp, and I'm sure we'll
have many more NBA headlines and Shaquille O'Neal comments if
you can just get over that shyness.
Speaker 8 (57:47):
And I'm Rudy Gobern, so oh I look forward to that.
Speaker 2 (57:51):
Let me know if he licks any microphones in the
next couple of weeks, I'm not letting them off. OK
for that great stuff? Mark, all right, it's Mark Medina.
But need a magic every Saturday night here on the
Bernie Fratter Show. As the NBA is also around the corner.
All right, it's time we have to dive into the
NFL the bottom of the hour. You know, this has
(58:11):
happened nineteen to the last twenty one years where an
NFL team has gone from worse to first. It even
happened twice in twenty eighteen, one of them with the
Chicago Bears. That was the year Mitch Trubisky led them
to the playoffs, and they would have even won a
playoff game had it not been for the double doing
field goal. At the bottom of the hour, I'm going
(58:32):
to tell you which of the teams I think will
go from worse to first. And here's a spoiler alert,
and it ain't the Bears. And here's another spoiler alert.
I think the Bears are losing Sunday. And I'm gonna
explain to you why what if I told you that
first overall picks of the draft starting a game as
a quarterback in Week one, they're two and twenty one
(58:52):
since twenty oh three. Yeah, but I'm also going to
talk about why Tennessee's being dissed. I think the Bears
are going to beat Tennessee. Check that, I think Tennessee's
gonna beat the Bears, which is gonna get their season
started off at zero to one and then bottom of
the r. We'll talk about the teams that that I
believe have a chance to go from Worster first to
(59:14):
which one I think will. I'm Bernie Frattle Where coming

Speaker 2 (59:35):
We're back at the Bernie Frattles Show Fox Sports Radio,
coming toy Liar from the tire Act dot Com studios
here in Las Vegas. Coming up after the Chef's update,
We're gonna dive into the eight teams who finished last
and who can finish first. Go last to first. It happens.
It happens a lot. It happened pretty much every year,
I think, only to the last twenty three years it
(59:57):
hasn't happened. I'll tell you the team I think that
will have the honors, and it's not the Chicago Bears,
even though they were one of the teams to do
it in back of twenty eight teams. A matter of fact,
Bear fans, Bears fans, this may piss he off too bad.
I think you're getting beat by Tennessee Sunday. Despite all
the hype the Bears have received during the offseason, let's
(01:00:19):
set the table as the Tennessee Titans visit town. There's
no refuting the fact that Tennessee owns one of the
most underrated receiving course in football. DeAndre Hopkins, Calvin Ridley,
Tyler Boyd. They add Treylon Burks, WHOA. Now, you may
not be sold yet on Will Levis, but he's got
some guys to throw to. He's got some real talent
(01:00:40):
he can throw to, and that's gonna make his life
a lot easier as he leads Tennessee's offense. Now he's
in his second season. Right, last season, the Titans threw
for less than two hundred yards in ten of their games,
and Levis was sacked right and left. We believe that's
gonna change in twenty twenty four. Got a new head coach,
Brian Callahan. His dad Bill Callahan, lots of experienced the
(01:01:04):
new O line coach recognized as the best O line
coach in the National Football League. Recently notified he'd been
selected to the Paul Zimmerman Award. A guy used to
write for Sports Illustrated. I think Levis his numbers are
going to be much better. Meanwhile, listen, all this buzz
in Chicago centers around Caleb Williams. I don't dislike Caleb Williams.
(01:01:25):
He's going to be fabulous to watch. Got all kinds
of talent. He deserved to win the Heisman Trophy. He
deserved to be the top choice in this last year's
NFL draft. The Bears even won for their final six
games last season. But I have a satan saying, don't
tell me, show me. Chicago's just two and eight outright
in this last ten season opening games the last ten
(01:01:47):
seasons in their opening games three and seven straight up.
Not Listen. The bottom line is this Tennessee is going
to present a real challenge. First, overall, picks struggle mightily
when you start a game in your first game in
the end, and that will lead into my reasons why
I don't think the Bears will go from worse to first.
But I'll tell you who I think will coming up.
(01:02:08):
But first we go to our guy, the chef, Kevin
wyt with.
Speaker 9 (01:02:11):
The last Yes, Bernie. College football in full swing. Everything
has gone final around the country. The last game to
finally finish was USC and U toassed it all. This
game was over for quite a bit. The thirteenth ranked
Trojans a dismantlement of the Aggies forty eight to nothing.
So USC now improves to two and oh elsewhere in
(01:02:33):
at college football, the upset of the day coming in
South Bend.
Speaker 11 (01:02:38):
Snap hoole Jeters, kick this fuck it fucked, it's fucked,
picked up by you. That's tays put the biggest upset
and are you this story?
Speaker 4 (01:02:48):
They come to South Bend, Indiana.
Speaker 12 (01:02:50):
And they knock off the number five team in the country.
And are you sixteen Notre Dame fourteen? The football gods,
we're shiny.
Speaker 2 (01:03:00):
Down, are you?
Speaker 9 (01:03:02):
That was a Northern Illinois radio network with the call
as they get the biggest win in Husky program history,
beating number five Notre Dame sixteen to fourteen on a
final minute field goal. Before getting that block number seven Oregon,
they had a tough time of it against Boise Ski Snap.
Speaker 10 (01:03:20):
Good placement, good kick on the way it's gone penally
flag down. Looked like the Broad Coast line have jumped
off fight in the initial ideal. That's it Oregon that
has won their first game against Boise State in four
tries in a most dramatic fashion, great defensive stops and
(01:03:42):
a drive that gave him a great field goal effort
at the end, it sapping and knocks her through for
twenty five yards, and Oregon is two to zero in
that win column.
Speaker 9 (01:03:50):
Call courtesy of the Oregon Sports Network from Learfield. So
a week after they trailed Idaho in the fourth quarter,
they needed a last second field goal to lift themselves
over Boys State, winning this one thirty seven thirty four.
But the Ducks now to and oh Texas. How about
those third ranked Longhorns huge win in number ten Michigan
thirty one twelve, dominating as quinn Ewer's three touchdown passes
(01:04:15):
Number eight Pence data. They were trailing but ended up bealing,
beating Bowling Green thirty four to twenty seven, Number fourteen,
Tennessee fifty one ten winners at number twenty four NC
State fifteenth ranked Oklahoma narrowly getting by Houston sixteen to twelve,
Number sixteen Oklahoma State had to take two overtimes to
(01:04:35):
beat Arkansas, with the Dude get the win thirty nine
to thirty one two Lane and number seventeen Kansas State
as the Wildcats getting the lead on a fourth quarter
fumble return in the Green Wave in the final seconds
trying to drive down and tie it, and Kansas State
getting the interception of the end zone to seal the
win thirty four to twenty seven. Illinois ten points in
(01:04:58):
the final ten minutes to get by numb nine ten
Kansas twenty three seventeen Iowa State over number twenty one
Iowa late fifty four yard field goal as the Cyclones
complete the comeback twenty eight to nineteen Syracuse over number
twenty three Georgia Tech thirty one twenty eight And in
NFL news, Jordan Love, they have a result at least
(01:05:19):
from his injury that he suffered on Friday. Was just
six seconds to go. Jordan Love suffering at the time
would appear to be a lower leg injury, and they're
saying it's a sprained MCL. He could miss three to
six weeks, so not nearly as bad as was feared,
but he is still going to miss some time. Christian
McCaffery has been dealing with a calf issue. Was limited
in practice on Friday, but he does say he will
(01:05:42):
be good to go on Monday. As for Jamar Chase,
it's they're classifying it as an illness, so we'll see
if he'll be out on the field much, if at all,
on Monday. In the WNBA, Angel Reese out for the season.
She announceds she's got a wrist injury. It wasn't for
Caitlin Clarks, she'd probably be the Cinch Rookie of the Year.
(01:06:04):
On the men's side of things, Denver Nuggets gard Jamal
Murray agreeing to a four year extension worth over two
hundred million dollars, and at the US Open Women's final,
number two seed Arianna Sabolenka beats American Jessica Bagoula seven
to five, seven five.
Speaker 4 (01:06:23):
Back to you, Bernie, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:06:25):
Jeff four them up those vocal cords. One hour from now,
America waits. You know what, Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady
and Jordan Love and Aaron Rodgers, you know what. They
all happened in common before they stepped onto the field
to have some success in the National Football League. They
(01:06:47):
all got to watch a veteran do it for a
year that matters. And you know, probably next week I'm
going to go into my annual I'm gonna launch you
into my annual oratory about why it's a real crapshoot
to draft a quarterback in the first round and why
they fail at such a high rate. And you know,
(01:07:07):
the numbers don't lie. But let me start with this.
I believe one of the eight teams will finished last
last year will finish first. But it's not going to
be the Bears. And I'll tell you my theory is this,
and I get it's understandable. Caleb Williams is gonna spark
all the optimism in Chicago. He's a real, genuine offensive catalyst.
(01:07:32):
I'm sick and tired of hearing he's the greatest quarterback
in their history without ever taking a snap. Get out
of here with that. You never saw Jim McMahon play.
You don't know how good the guy really was. He
won a Super Bowl. He was legit. Forget the numbers
don't compare eras he was amazing at byu' He's amazing
with the Bears. Okay, win a super Bowl, then maybe
maybe we'll have a conversation, and I get he's got
(01:07:53):
a receiving core. DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Roma, Doonza. They
say the offensive line is better, YadA YadA ya, just
like I said about Colorado. Here's the thing that's concerning
there are really unreasonable expectations that the Bears are just
gonna all of a sudden win the division or maybe
even make the playoffs, because that might be a, you know,
(01:08:14):
an honorable goal, but the Bears. The chasm between the
Bears and the Lions, and the Bears and the Packers
is pretty significant in my view. And you haven't taken
any consideration that the tremendous learning curve that Caleb Williams
is going to have ahead of him. You don't realize
(01:08:34):
when the real bullets start to fly. Sunday with the
National Football League really looks like when he gets hot,
it's hard to breathe, and you got real growing men
with beards coming after you with bad intentions every single play.
He hasn't had the luxury of watching a veteran do
this for a year, and I don't think he don't.
(01:08:57):
I don't believe he has.
Speaker 8 (01:08:58):
C J.
Speaker 2 (01:08:58):
Strout's temperament. And I don't believe he can elevate the
offense like CJ. Stroud did, or even like Andrew Luck
did you know decade ago or more so. And I
don't think the Bears have enough juice on their roster
to push the Lions or Packers. And I and listen
if I'm really being critical, and I am. I think
the Bears defensive line remains a real issue. Montes what
(01:09:19):
is the one legitimate pass rushing threat. But their interior
looks spotty. They're in a tough division. They're in the
white hot spotlight of the National Football League. I do
not believe the Bears will be the team one of
the of any of the eight teams who finished last
last year. I'm certain the Bears will not finish first.
I'm not even so sure they're gonna make the playoffs. Hey,
put that in your pencil. Write it down. Like I
(01:09:42):
told Ian Roddy a few weeks ago, when I said
there was no way in hell the US Olympic men's
team was gonna lose, they didn't. Friday Night, I said
there's no way in hell Colorado was beating Nebraska. They didn't.
I'm not gonna be that guy. But here's my point.
I'll eat it. I'll, i'll, I don't. I don't mind
correcting myself. If if the Bears make a liar out
of me matter of fact to make for a great story,
(01:10:02):
wouldn't it ain't gonna happen? Though, tally, who else is
it gonna go?
Speaker 13 (01:10:05):
For?
Speaker 2 (01:10:05):
Worse to worse? The first the New England Patriots, come on, man,
I like Drake, May you know Jacoby Bissett. I mean,
if you can name three New England Patriots, you got
a brand new coach. They're in the same division as
the Buffalo Bills, who are going to be better than
people want to give them credit for the Miami Dolphins,
who are very good, and the Jets. You know, if
(01:10:27):
they stay healthy and if that defense staffs up, maybe
Hassan Reddick shows up and Aaron Rodgers stays healthy, they're
the fourth best team in that division. So let's just
move on from the Patriots. I really don't think the
Washington Commanders. I know, they got nowhere to go but up,
and they had the league the league's worst point differential
last year. They gave up one hundred and eighty nine
(01:10:47):
more points than they scored and the end of the
season on an eight game skit outther than that, things
are looking great for their new coach Dan Quinn. They're
in a major rebuild. Washington has major areas of concern
in every key position. You get to drift. It ain't
gonna be the Washington Commanders. I don't think it's going
to be the Carolina Panthers either. However, I like Dave Canalis.
(01:11:09):
I like Bryce Young. Give the young man a chance.
Dave Canalis was critical in resurrecting Gino Smith's career three
years ago. Remember when he says, you know, they all
wrote me off, but I ain't right back? Was? That
was Dave Canalis. Dave Canalis also helped resurrect Baker Mayfield's career.
(01:11:30):
Baker Mayfield was strolling and strutting around like a peacock
in radio ro last year. I like Baker got the bag,
he deserved it. That was Dave Canalis. Dave Canalis was
also presiding over Russell Wilson during his best careers. What
am I saying? I think Bryce Bryce Young is going
to improve with Dave Canalis, and they've spent some money.
But the truth of the matter is you can't overhaul
(01:11:52):
an offense that that was far down to click in
the first month, and I think to get off to
a slow start and they're gonna have a hard time.
They only won more than seven games once in the
last nine years. That's the year they went to the
super Bowl with Cam Newton. They're not a laughing stock,
and as a matter of fact, they're one of my
best bets Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. The Saints
may win that game, but they're laying four and a half.
(01:12:13):
I think it's a very close game. It's a Divisional
Dog Week one, which we're going to get into later
in the show. I do this every year with Jason McIntyre.
I'll go be going on this podcast Thursday Straight Fire
to talk about Divisional Dogs Week one in September and
how rock solid they've been. There three divisional dogs, one
of them is Carolina. But I don't think Carolina is
going to go from worse to first. I also don't
(01:12:36):
think the Arizona Cardinals are either. All right, the Arizona
Cardinals are going to compete. They'll have a somewhat entertaining offense,
but again, the talent disparity between the Cardinals and say
the San Franisco forty nine Ers is so great you
can't even really have a conversation about this. Even the Rams,
(01:12:57):
let's not even go down there way. I know they've
got Marvin Harrison Junior. I think Kyler Murray can have
a good year. I do. I think Michael Wilson it
can have a breakout year. Their tight end, Trey McBride.
They run the ball well, they play hard, They're gonna compete,
They're just not gonna do much just the way it is.
The Chargers finished last last year under the legend Brandon Staley.
(01:13:19):
Who will miss watching him do the cat cal yoga move.
Huh that guy who? I think that that the brand
and Staley era is one they will want to soon
forget in Los Angeles, meaning the Chargers. So coming up,
we're gonna talk Can the Chargers go from worse to first?
(01:13:39):
Can the Titans go for worse to first? I've already
talked about the Bears. At least one team, the Cincinnati Bengals.
I will tell you which of those three teams I
believe will go from worst to first. I'm Bernie Frattle.

the hour, Tom Brady will take over as the top
analyst the Fox Sports number one NFL Sunday team, calling
(01:14:42):
us first game ever. He's never broadcast a game before.
He goes right to the top. I'm gonna talk about
what I'm looking for out of Tom Brady and what
the cruise thoughts will be as well as we dive
into this in a very very granular fashion. All right,
So I have not revealed WHI will be the team
that goes from worse to first because it happens twenty
(01:15:03):
one of the last twenty three years. Will it be
the Chargers? Look, Jim Harbaugh is not a miracle worker.
He will have that team competitive. I think they'll be
above five hundred and I think he's got a quarterback
with very unique abilities. Hardball said while he was in
Michigan he had a crush on on Justin Herbert, and
I get why. His presence is really everything with the Chargers.
(01:15:27):
And the Chargers will be a run heavy, defensive team.
But you really think they're gonna overtake the AFC West
CHAMPI Chiefs, You've only won it eight times in a row. Yeah,
And if you saw it Thursday, they showed no signs,
no signs of fading. In my view, they look loaded
for bear. And you know, as once again Baltimore failed
(01:15:47):
to stick the landing. If you get my drafts, well,
that leaves two teams the Tennessee Titans. I don't think
people should should pooh pooh the Tennessee Titans. They did
fire Mike Rabel. You're bringing Brian Callahan, you got Will Levis,
you got some damn good receivers. They also snagged a cornerback,
Lagerius Snead in a trade with Kansas City, and look
(01:16:10):
they mused to want them. They gave him seventy six
million dollars. The only challenge here is although the Titans
made a lot of changes, all for the good, it
might be too many changes to endure at one time.
Right they retooled. They have a very aggressive general manager
named ran Carthon. He didn't take his foot off the gas.
(01:16:33):
He moved in a lot of directions. No more Derek Henry,
no more by Rabel, no more Ryan Tannehill. But they
brought in a lot of good pieces parts. But they've
got to do it on the field. The defense would
be better on paper, but there could be a regression. And
so the tooth of the matter is the AFC South
is you know, is not one. I don't think one
of the better divisions. The bottom line is this Tennessee
(01:16:56):
has a shot. They have a shot to you know,
maybe you overtake a Jacksonville Jaguars, etc. I don't know
that they will because even though the Ironies they made
so many changes for the good, it might be too
many to absorb in one year. So who do I
think it's going to be. I gotta believe it's going
to be the Cincinnati Bengals. As long as Joe Burrow
(01:17:17):
and his calf ailment, as long as he stays healthy.
It doesn't require a lot of faith to buy him
to this group. They won twenty two games in twenty
one and twenty two, they reach a super Bowl, they
reach THEFC Championship Game, and they're the one team I
think that they don't fear Kansas City in a way,
Baltimore appears to The defense gave up far too many
(01:17:39):
explosive plays last year, but they know they're going to
be much better at safety. They bring in Genos Stone
and Von Bell Returns and listen, they they had a
lot of trade requests to get guys like t Higgins
defensive end Trey Hendrickson. They're a legitimate contender. Now. I
(01:18:00):
realize they got to get this situation with Jamar Chase
straightened out. But remember Cincinnati, this is not the first barbecue.
They went from worse to first back in twenty twenty one,
and it's a matter. I know it's cliche, but they
have to stay healthy okay, and I will tell you
that you put them on the field with the Ravens
(01:18:23):
and on paper they may not have the talent if
you start to go position by position, but they compete
with Baltimore. I've seen them go into Baltimore two years
ago and kick Baltimore's But they've had their way with Baltimore.
They signed Trent Brown, the draft of Marius Mimes, they
got their offensive line improved, and they got Joel Burrow back.
(01:18:45):
I believe Cincinnati will be the team that goes from
worst to first and their division, we shall see. It's
been done twenty one in the last twenty three years.
Why can't it be done this year? I think it'll
be Cincinnati coming up Tom Brady. We're just a little
over twelve hours away from Tom Brady making his debut.
(01:19:05):
He's never broadcast a single game before. Now he's Fox

(01:19:46):
I bet there's a lot you don't know about. Thomas
Edward Patrick Brady Junior. I had a good fortune of
being in that market. When Tom Brady was matriculating at
the University of Michigan, he redshirted in ninety five I
have in ninety seven year old around Michigan won the
mythical National championship and Tom Brady was the backup quarterback
(01:20:06):
behind Brian Greasey's story has it he walked into Lloyd
Carr's office one day they head coach, and said, Coach,
I should be starting. The truth was Tom Brady was
picking apart the starting defense as a Scout team quarterback,
and Coach Carl looked at him and says, Tom, worry
about yourself. That's your advice for his team, and that's
your advice for life. It hasn't always been easy for
(01:20:28):
Tom Brady. He's always had to fight. He was seventh
on the depth chart at Michigan. When he got there,
he struggled to get playing time. At one point, Tom
Brady actually hired a sports psychologist to help him cope
with this frustration, having a lot of anxiety. Even considered
transferring to cal University California. Of course, he was talked
out of it, and the rest became history. And Tom
(01:20:51):
Brady is the type of guy said he's willing to
rely on sound advice, he's willing to rely on mentorship.
And Tom Brady, I will tell you when he became
the starter, he was amazing. He was twenty and five
and had a lot of big wins at Michigan. But
I digress. What's the point? Tom Brady is most likely
going to figure this out. But he's never broadcast a
(01:21:13):
game and he's going to be the Fox number one
analyst starting well, just about twelve hours and twenty minutes
from now, it's a Cowboys take on Cleveland. So can
a guy just walk in right off the field and
take over one of the most high profile jobs in
sports media? And if it were anybody else, I think
there'd be pullback, pushback. But Brady, look, you don't get
(01:21:39):
rich betting against Tom Brady because this I know after
observing at Michigan, no one will outprepare him, no one
will outwork him. He will prepare for this gig as
he already has, just like he prepared for his last gig,
and that worked out pretty well. I think you'd agree.
But what's Tom Brady really going to be like behind
(01:21:59):
the mic? What does he have to do to impress you?
And he's already joined comparisons to Tony Romo only because
they're both quarterbacks. And for a while there, Tony Romo's
act at assessing formations and then predicting the play before
they would happen, had a few hits and he became
(01:22:19):
sort of this kneat trick that I think fizzled out.
You know, I'm over Tony Romo. He kind of bugs me.
He only won two playoff games as a cowboy. Brady
won thirty five playoff games. Yeah, and I think Brady
will be better eventually than Romo. But what does Brady
have to do to impress us? Okay, what does he
(01:22:41):
really have to do to impress you? So as I
consider Tom Brady, and I think the likability factors probably there,
Although we're gon we're gonna talk to the crew later on.
Do you care that Tom Brady's doing this? Do you
like Tom Brady? Not? Everybody likes him. My good buddy,
Rob Parker. You know how you've about him so and
(01:23:01):
I understand why Rob gives good reasons for feeling the
way he feels. So what's it gonna be like? And
I think part of it many of us are watching
just to see what it's gonna be like. Okay, what
is tom Brady gonna be like?
Speaker 1 (01:23:19):
So?
Speaker 2 (01:23:20):
Will he be knowledgeable? Well, that's a given. He's gonna
be knowledgeable, but he's got to do more than that.
How's he gonna package his message? We know he's got
a ridiculously high football IQ. We know he's gonna prepare
to the ends of the earth. Will he be willing
to take us inside players' heads, inside the huddle, inside
the locker room, when things go wrong, when the play
(01:23:42):
breaks down, When he gets out, it's hard to breathe.
There's a whole range of events that take place in
a National Football League game. The best laid plans, they
start to go awry. What happens? How do you adjust?
What do you do? Okay, and when you look across
the board of all the NFL games that will be
on TV next year, or the Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon,
(01:24:05):
you've got all. You've got people from all walks of life.
Ex lineman, ex jocks, number crunching nerds, were analysts, buttoned up,
button up reporters with nice hair pieces or whatever the hell.
I don't care, pretty boys. Tom Brady is the goat.
You'll see the preparation, you'll see the execution. The question
is how does he package his message. I'm really looking
(01:24:28):
forward to see how he does that. What's his style,
what's his voice? When the lights go on, It's going
to be different. This is not easy to do. We
had a very capable crew working with you tonight. They
will know to be the first to tell you this
is not an easy job. The trick is making it
look easy, all right? So how will he package his message?
Now let's get into the content, and this is what
I'm looking for. Will Tom Brady be fair? All right?
(01:24:52):
He's not one of those guys that wishes he was
still playing, or you know, thought he got screwed, or
maybe he's looking to get a coaching job like paid
Rex Ryan, and that keeps a lot of ex coaches
from going into broadcasting or even achieving broadcasting greatness, because
if you're going to be a future coach, you don't
want to be dogging people. And Brady doesn't need people
(01:25:12):
to like him. People already like him, or they want
to like him, or they want to be like him.
Even if they don't like him, they're gonna watch. We
talk about that all the time. The opposite of love
is not hated. Some different you're gonna pay attention. How
honest will Tom Brady be about the flaws of players
that he's being paid to analyze? We don't know. Do
we think he will? I think he will, but we
(01:25:33):
don't know. So what's his message? How knowledgeable, which we
know he's going to be, how's he going to package it?
How fair and objective is he is? You know? Is
he going to be? He's in the perfect position to
give you just about any opinion. They have a great
amount of credibility, more so than Tony Romo, who I
believe has become a cartoon character. He's become a character. Sure,
(01:25:54):
I just get the big kick out of it. Is
there with Jim Nantz Jim Nantzys. The patience of a
saying yeah, Jim, they're gonna run the ball here next
to they're back to pass cracks me up. It happens
so often it should be a drinking game. You'd pass
out by the third quarter. Because Tony Romel gets a
lot of them wrong. Even though that was his shtick,
it's stick and I don't think Brady's gonna be about shtick.
(01:26:16):
I think one of the things he'll be in his
own way is relatable. Consider Peyton Manning. Everybody loves Peyton Manning,
and Peyton Manning is a type of guy who's transitioned
off the field into this incredibly relatable guy because in
spite of being a Hall of Famer and winning Super
(01:26:38):
Bowls with two different teams, he's racked up rings and
he's got, you know, more money than they'll ever need.
But the reason Peyton Manning is so likable and relatable
is because he comes across as one of us. He's
a little goofy, doesn't take himself real seriously. He was
(01:27:00):
on sound in that Live a couple of times. And
I don't know that Brady has the every guy shtick.
It's just not in his DNA. It's not he He
didn't even start as a freshman quarterback at Sarah High
School in northern California and the team was only eight.
He's had to fight for everything and that wasn't so
much the case with Peyton Manning whose football royalty. But
(01:27:21):
I'm not saying Peyton Manny didn't earn it. But it's
almost impossible for Brady to be like Peyton Manning. He's
not one of us. That's I don't mean one of us,
you know what I mean, the relatable type of guy,
that's the regular dude, Brady. Brady takes a lot of
air out of the room, and for all the right reasons.
And the truth of the matter is he's not going
to be a guy that's going to engender empathy or sympathy.
(01:27:44):
He's not going to come across as a fan who
who joys the game and views the game just like
everybody else. He's gonna be different, but he's still got
to be relatable, so knowledgeable, Yes, how does he package
it fair? Is he going to be willing to be critical?
And is he going to be relatable? For me? Humor
is the great equalizer in life. It is a great
(01:28:05):
icebreaker in all walks of life. And I will tell
you you show me any great order, any great communicator,
they're a good storyteller and the use humor. Will Tom
Brady do that? Can he do that? Does he want
to do that? Because I'm my only concern having been
around him, is you. It's what's called quantum physics. Now
(01:28:28):
he's being observed. He knows he's being observed. So therefore
does he attempt to be robotic? Check that? Does he
end up being a little robotic? Is there gonna attempt
to be robotic? Does he end up being a little robotic?
I don't recall funny Tom Brady. I really don't. I
don't recall happy, go lucky, getting people laughing Tom Brady,
(01:28:49):
or storytelling tom Brady. Although I understand he's a good storyteller.
Can he do that? Within the framework of a broadcast?
Humor is important. Some of the best the great broadcast teams.
John Madden was very humorous. Lots of the great broadcast
teams have that gear. Does Brady? Yes, Anno, he does.
(01:29:12):
He's had a locker room humor. But in the framework
of a broadcast, while you're thinking on your feet and
they're breaking the huddle, and you get about thirty seconds
of the next play, and you're reacting, and you're dispensing
your knowledge, which you have, and you're trying to be
fair and you're trying to be relatable. Can you package
your message in humor? I don't know if you ever
saw the movie Good Morning Vietnam. Fabulous Adrian Cronauer, Robin Williams.
(01:29:35):
He was a natural good more than Vietnam. And then
all of a sudden, Dan the man Levitan takes over.
The dude was warm, dishwater, nice guy. Sure, he's a
wonderful human being. He's a movie character. Okay, work with me,
But my point is he was not Adrian Cronower. People
liked Adrian cronaar but it came natural. Then Dan Levitan
started to be trying to be a little funny. Bruno
(01:29:57):
Kirby was trying to tell his boss, Sir, I know
I am funny, He said, son, you don't know if
you've been shot f powder burner, snake, but get out
of my office. Being funny isn't easy. And there's one
final thing. There's no question Tom Brady is draped with stardom.
Stardom doesn't necessarily translate to broadcast success. I love Magic
(01:30:18):
Johnson to death, met him many times. Was he a
great broadcaster? No, and this dude is as big as
stars you could ever imagine. However, there are stars, they
also become exceptional broadcasters. Charles Barkley, everybody loves Charles's a personality.
I think Troy Aikman is as good as anybody working.
(01:30:39):
So Tom Brady, pick eighty seven of these. Be a
truth teller, Be a storyteller. Be charismatic, be insightful, be witty,
be intelligent, be clever, show humor, be relatable, be fair,
try to be critical, be irreverent when you got to
be irreverent, and at the end of the day, show
(01:31:00):
that knowledge, but package it in a way that doesn't
come across as robotic. That's what I'm looking to see
out of Tom Brady. I'm not looking at it for
week one, but today, it'd be nice if he came
out of the gates strong, coming up, Let's bring in
the crew. First of all, are they excited Tom Brady
got this gig? Not everybody is. They think he jumped
to the front of the line. I am not one
(01:31:20):
of those people. I don't begrudge someone else's success. I
will say this, I'm only watching for the entertainment purposes.
Do I think he's gonna screw up? No, I don't
think Tom Brady's capable of failing. But what level of
success and more he is in the pantheonic broadcasters, right,
He's got to be above Tony Romo because Tony Romo
to me is klowmb is caricature. Now coming up, we
(01:31:43):
will bring in the crew. They can piggyback off what
I said. We are gonna talk Tom Brady because this
is real meant Look, one of our callers said, it's
so good last night and Friday night. This is entertainment. Yes,
it's packaged to sports, but it is entertainment and we're
all here for it. I'm Bernie Frattworke comedy line from
Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio, Tirat dot com studios. Keep
(01:32:04):
it locked. You're listening to the Bernie Frattles Show on

the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio

Speaker 2 (01:32:19):
All right back at the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
We are coming to live from the tyrat dot Com
studios here in Las Vegas, thirty nine minutes away from
the dance Sensation sweep of the nation. What kind of
brand new fool you followed by? What my name? But first,
Tom Brady makes his debut here in about twelve hours.
What are you looking for? What does he have to
(01:32:40):
do to impress you? Are you glad he's here? Bree,
Let's start with you. What are your thoughts?
Speaker 14 (01:32:44):
I'm really excited to see him in his role. Actually,
I think he's gonna ace the concept of being relatable
since he can kind of envision himself being kind of
each in one of those players, like maybe a player
that's like started from you know, the practice squad, and
you know, he can kind of of, you know, put
himself in that mindset and and I don't honestly, I
don't mind it. I think there's people who have less
(01:33:06):
accolades who have taken those broadcast positions and haven't been
that great. And I think the fact of how serious
he's taken his role as an athlete, I think it's
going to translate really well into broadcasting.
Speaker 15 (01:33:18):
So I'm really looking forward to it.
Speaker 2 (01:33:21):
Yeah, there's no question that Tom Brady's commitment to excellence
and everything he's done is going to translate. I got
a couple of interesting tweets here. Someone named Red says
Brady needs a personality. Manning is fun, Brady is dry.
Another gentleman Fred Nebraska. The single most important thing and
NFL analyst has to do is or learn is when
(01:33:42):
to shut up. Fair point. But that's part of the
learning process as well, Chef, what are your thoughts?
Speaker 9 (01:33:51):
Well, the biggest issue for me with Tom Brady becoming
an analyst is that he's going to be limited in
the access he has to seems because of his current
attempt to buy a share of the Las Vegas Raiders.
So the NFL has kind of told him that he
can't be a part of those production meetings in which
they meet with the head coach, the coordinators see practice
to kind of get an idea of what each team
(01:34:12):
is going to do in that game so they can
break it down on TV. And that's something that just
about every other analyst to every other play by play
guy on the broadcast gets access to, and he's not
going to have, So that's going to limit him I
think a little bit.
Speaker 4 (01:34:25):
Now, I don't chef should.
Speaker 2 (01:34:26):
Just to set the record straight. I'm told that that
won't enact until he actually consummates his deal with the Raiders,
which I don't think he ever will. Not to get
off on a tangent, I just want to set the
record strate for an audience. But I'm glad you brought
this up. The Raiders are currently valued by Forbes at
about seven point six billion dollars. Brady is attempting to
buy one percent. His offer was sixty million. That's less
(01:34:48):
than one percent, And so that's why I got kiboshed.
He's treated like an annuity now if it goes through,
because they'll be an on on there's conflict of interest.
What you just mentioned could happen. It's excellent talking point,
but I don't think they get to that point unless
they consummate this this business transaction. So and I mean
to cut you off there, I just want to set
that up.
Speaker 9 (01:35:07):
Okay, So that's a good point then, But nonetheless, he
is new, he is fresh, and I am someone who
typically prefers someone to be more experienced when it comes
to calling the biggest games that a network has. I
thought Greg Olsen was an outstanding color analyst, and to
see him get demoted to the number two spot, I
know that's how the business works a lot of the time,
(01:35:28):
but I thought he was someone who added a lot
to a broadcast as did an outstanding job breaking down
plays in a way that an average fan can understand.
It didn't get too technical, but wasn't really basic either.
He had a nice balance on how he did it,
and he was also incredibly clear and concise. Also had
a pretty positive personality as well, So he was someone
(01:35:49):
I became a fan of. So it's much about losing
him in the top spot as it is about having
Tom Brady there. That for me is the issue. But
when it comes to his work ethic and his knowledge
of the game, I don't think. I don't doubt that
Tom Brady, we'll be able to excel. But again, with
that possible Raiders purchase, that is something that could limit him.
(01:36:09):
But with you kind of making that a clear with
his status and doing that, and maybe that won't be.
Speaker 2 (01:36:14):
Sure to impress you. I know why Greg Olsen impressed
all of us because he was a keen observer. He
really was. What's Brady have to do to impress.
Speaker 9 (01:36:22):
You in a similar sense like one, I want some
personality from him, not just to dry and bland into.
I want to see exactly how does he break down
plays as they happen in a game, because that's a
very peculiar art form in how someone's able to break
down something as complex as a play in football in
(01:36:42):
real time. So if he can do that where I
can learn something about it and really understand the game better,
that's how I'll judge him as a success. Is how
am I understanding the game that's being played in front
of me fair enough, Mark Ramsey.
Speaker 16 (01:36:57):
So basically I've been looking at just by us talking
about some of the same things. The first thing I
would say is the fans viewing the game have to
first make sure they get past all the Patriot bias
because to be able to watch the games and listen
to him, whatever bias they may have, hopefully that that
(01:37:20):
won't hurt their idea of what he's doing. If he
can come off smooth and relatable, like you said, that's
going to go a long way by him being able
to be smooth not stumble over his words, not that
he's going to have flop sweat, because I think he
wouldn't have tried to take the job if he wasn't
going to be nervous about it and just not to
(01:37:42):
be or come off as a big no it all.
If he can be relatable, lay out the essence of
each play, I think that will make him. Those would
be the things that will make him successful.
Speaker 2 (01:37:57):
So I want to read a couple of tweets here
from Sean and Portland. He's right, Darryl wal Darryl Waltrip
was a star auto racer, right, and a great broadcaster,
he said, comparing Brady Manning's like Earnhardt Waltrip, with Waltrip
being the so called Manning every man. Manning just has
that affability. He has that every man affability, even though
(01:38:19):
he's also a Hall of Famery, has more natural chops.
I think Tom Brady, at least at first, is gonna
be a little mechanical, but he'll get better because he
always does. And it will all come down to content.
Content is king. Then how does he package that content?
Does he package it in a way that's entertaining, informative?
(01:38:42):
You know? Will he use the power of story, Will
he you know, use the sense of humor? Tom Brady, right,
now is in that category of Bill Belichick, Tiger Woods,
Derek Jeeter. What do I mean by that? When they
were plying their trade. Belichick is a head coach, Derek
Jeters Yankee shortstop, Tiger Woods golfer, they stonewalled you. Okay,
(01:39:07):
they were never going to let you know what they
were really thinking. And I will because I've talked to
Jered Derek Jeter. These guys are funny as hell. Trust me,
they are funny. They can deliver a punchline when and
where they want, and they're fabulous. They just chose not
to do it. Brady has some of that. The question
is will he do that? I think if he can
(01:39:29):
do some of that, you know, his job's not to
be a comedian, his job's going to be entertainment. And
I am still of the belief that how he packages
his message is going to be everything. That's that's what's
really going to determine the level that Tom Brady is accepted,
and he's gonna have a white hot spotlight on him
(01:39:50):
and Chef, I think you brought up a good point
as far as you know the situation where not everybody
maybe was happy that he got Greg Old's and bumped
into the second tier for lack of a better perhaps
you know designation. But we're going to be watching and
I love this kind of stuff, and I think it
(01:40:11):
adds to the overall entertainment quotion for Sundays games. Just
yet another thing to watch, right, Aaron Rodgers, he's back
this weekend. The Cowboys circus goes to Cleveland. Right, Jim
Harball makes his debut. But then add it all up,
and what's part of the entertainment medium? Yes, Tom Brady,
(01:40:34):
Tom Brady, speaking of the Jets, only nine quarterbacks started
all seventeen games last season in the entire league. Why
is that important to the NFL? Why is that important
to the TV people who decided who was going to
be on TV this year? I'll tell you coming up,
But first let's go back to our guy, the chef,
(01:40:54):
Kevin Wyer. Well, chef, you take a shot of brandy
before that one to night. I won't tell anybody. I
won't tell anybody.
Speaker 9 (01:41:00):
Keep it between us, Bernie here between us. Yes, that's
our that's our secret. Gets me nice and warmed up, right,
it's anyway we had funny to get warmed up for
in college of football today, it was a great day
of action, but the biggest upset of the day coming
in a South Bend snap.
Speaker 11 (01:41:22):
Holes Jeter's kick this fuck fuck fuck picked up by you,
the best case put the biggest upset and are you
his story?
Speaker 12 (01:41:32):
They come to south in Indiana and they knock off
the number five team in the country, and are you sixteen.
Speaker 4 (01:41:39):
Notre Dame fourteen?
Speaker 12 (01:41:41):
The football gods we're shining down.
Speaker 4 (01:41:45):
Are you Northern Illinois sports next week?
Speaker 2 (01:41:49):
We're warmed up? Yes, as they say, tft I, thanks
for the information.
Speaker 9 (01:41:53):
Well, the folks at Notre Dame having to take some
shots to Jamison there at the end after losing that one,
Northern ILLINOI a last minute field goal less than a
minute ago.
Speaker 4 (01:42:03):
They made it.
Speaker 9 (01:42:03):
Notre Dame attempted a sixty two yarder. It got blocked,
as you heard right there. As the Huskies the biggest program,
biggest winning program history, sixteen to fourteen over the fifth
rank Notre Dame fighting Irish, big top ten matchup in
ann Arbor, Number three Texas over number ten Michigan thirty
one to twelve. As Quinn yours three touchdown passes Number
(01:42:28):
seven Oregon, they were in some trouble last week against Idaho,
actually trailed at one point in the fourth quarter before
escaping with a win. Tonight they were in action against
Boise State, and this one.
Speaker 4 (01:42:39):
Came right down to the wire.
Speaker 10 (01:42:42):
Snap, good placement, good kick on the way, It's good penally,
flag down looked like the Broad.
Speaker 4 (01:42:49):
Coast line have jumped off.
Speaker 3 (01:42:52):
Fight in.
Speaker 2 (01:42:54):
That's it.
Speaker 10 (01:42:54):
Oregon has won their first game against Boise State in
forte rise in a most dramatic fashion. Great defensive stops
and a drive that gave him a great field goal
effort at the end, it sapping and knocks it through
for twenty five yards and Oregon is two to zero in.
Speaker 4 (01:43:12):
That win column.
Speaker 9 (01:43:13):
Oregon Sports Network from Learfield there with the call. So
the Ducks do go to two and oh. But that's
two close wins against teams they were favored against Number
eight Penn State. Also in some trouble against Bowling Green.
But the nitne Lions do come away with the win.
They come from behind for the victory thirty four to
twenty seven number fourteen Tennessee blow out win against number
twenty four NC State fifty one to ten fifteenth ranked Oklahoma.
(01:43:37):
This one was a close win, a nail Bider, but
they do get by the Houston Cougar sixteen to twelve.
Sixteenth ranked Oklahoma State a double overtime winner against Arkansas
thirty nine to thirty one, Number seventeen Kansas State, they
take the lead on a fourth quarter fumble return for
a touchdown, and they hold off a late comeback attempt
by two lane, picking it off in the end zone
(01:43:58):
to seal the victory. Thirty four to twenty seven Illinois
ten points in their last ten minutes and they get
the win against number nineteen Kansas twenty three to seventeen
Iowa State a late fifty four yardfield goal. They get
the comeback and gets number twenty one Iowa twenty to
nineteen Syracuse over number twenty three Georgia Tech thirty one
(01:44:21):
to twenty eight. NFL injury news Ian Rappaport was some
late night updates. Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett, listed as
questionable with a thigh injury, is expected to play today.
Dolphins Pro Bowl quarterback Jalen Ramsey he's got a hamstring issue.
He will attempt to play today. He is listed as questionable,
but even if he does make it on there Rappaport's
(01:44:43):
saying he will not be a full going very well.
It could be on a pitch count. Lions defensive tackle
Dj Reader is attempting to return from a quad injury,
but is not quite ready to return. Next week is
considered a more realistic timeline. In Bears, wide receiver Keenan
Allen he's got a heal issue, and pass rusher Montes
Sweat he's dealing with a toe injury. Both of them
(01:45:04):
are listening as questionable and aren't expected to play on
a Sunday. Adam Schefter saying Patriots running back Antonio Gibson
he's listened as questionable due to a hip injury. He
does plan to play against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals,
though very well, could have limited action from Jamar Chase.
He's listed as having an illness, so of course he
(01:45:26):
hasn't been in camp much as he's trying to get
a new deal, and we'll see exactly how much he
plays on Sunday. Forty nine Ers running back Christian McCaffrey
says he will play Monday night. He's been dealing with
a calf issue, was limited in practice on Friday, and
Jordan love after he got hurt Friday night in Brazil
against the Eagles with just six seconds ago. The Packers
(01:45:46):
feared the worst, but it turns out as a sprain mcl.
He's still missed three to six weeks, but much better
than the possible season injury ending injury that many had feared.
In basketball, the WNBA Angel Reese out the see season,
she announces with a wrist injury, and the Denver Nuggets
given guard Jamal Murray a four year extension were two
(01:46:06):
hundred million dollars. US Open tennis, second seeded Arena Sabalinca
wins the US Open against America Jessica Bagoula in a
straight set, seven five seven five.
Speaker 2 (01:46:16):
Back to Bernie, all right, chef, another baffo performance. Good
help yourself to some cookies out of petty cash. Nice,
nicely done. You know, as I mentioned, only nine quarterbacks
started all seventeen games last season. Here's the significance to
(01:46:37):
that statement. Here, here's the context of that statement. Aaron
Rodgers obviously was not one of them. However, you turned
on your TV at any given time this or didn't
even point this fall, there's a good chance you're gonna
see the new York Jets on the tube in prime time.
That's because Aaron Rodgers team has been awarded six primetime
(01:47:01):
games over the first eleven weeks of this season. That's
I heard of for a losing team, but you all
know why. It's the first time in the NFL history
that a team has been given that many night games
over the first eleven weeks any team super Bowl winning teams.
By the way, the Jets also have a week this
doesn't even count. They have a Week five game in London,
which means they'll beginning seven standalone games before we even
(01:47:24):
get the Thanksgiving. Now, that's quite a feat for a
team who the last time they had a winning season.
Work with me, the last time the Jets had a
winning season, Uptown Funk was the number one song of
the year and Billboard top one hundred. Yes, just throwing
that in for their posterity. Now, we hope that Aaron
(01:47:47):
Rodgers better days are ahead and there is not any
more problems. This will be his first full season since
twenty twenty two. But weren't great then? He failed for
Aaron Rodgers actually failed to throw for three hundred yards
in any game in twenty twenty two. He also had
twelve interceptions that same season, the most that he ever
(01:48:10):
had since his first year as has started back in
Green Bay in two thousand and eight. So it's not
just enough that Rogers stays healthy. Hopefully these standalone games,
of which they'll be seven of them between now in
the first eleven weeks, stand up to the screwtin need.
People are gonna want to be entertained. And by the way,
(01:48:32):
just for comparative analysis, only three teams got six primetime
games for the entire season, the Cowboys, the forty nine Ers,
and the Jets. The Cowboys won twelve games last year,
the forty nine Ers won fourteen, the Jets won seven.
You get my drift. Hopefully they will be entertaining. We're
(01:48:53):
going to start out Monday night when the Jets visit
San Francisco. But here's a couple of stats as we
headed to the NFL Sunday. I like to do this
week to week on my show. We're an encyclopedia of
useless information here, although it's not necessarily useless. It's that
out of the day Buffalo, the Buffalo Bills are sixteen
to oher in games where Josh Allen does not have
(01:49:16):
a turnover. Yeah, finally in one of those oddities circle
of life oddities. You can't make this stuff up category,
You can't make this stuff up. The first Monday Night
game last season, Buffalo defensive end Leonard Floyd, he happened
to be the guy who sacked Aaron Rodgers who were
(01:49:36):
up to he ruptured his achilles. Leonard Floyd is no
longer with Buffalo. Leonard Floyd now plays for the forty
nine ers. Oh yeah, Monday Night, the forty nine Ers
play the Green Bay Packers. And yes, you can be sure.
I believe he's already said so. Leonard Floyd wants to
(01:49:58):
sack Aaron Rodgers again. Just a little sidebar we're gonna
be watching coming up a solid seventy six percent betting
trend for a week one that's going back to twenty fourteen.
I'm gonna share it with you. There are three games
fall into this category. I've talked about in the Chicago
Sometimes Today's Issue. I'll talk about it next Thursday with
(01:50:21):
Jason McIntyre on his podcast Straight Fire, and I'll talk
about it here coming up next. By the way, football fans,
be sure to tune into Fox Sports Radio every Sunday morning,
beginning at ten am Eastern, seven am Pacific, for Countdown

(01:50:43):
Countdown to Kickoff, presented by BETMGM. Right here on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app on Bernie Fraddle, we

Com studios. Keep it locked right here. You're listening to
the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right
back on the Bernie fraddlesh Fox Sports Radio. We are
coming to you live from the Tiak dot Com studios
(01:51:06):
here in La Vegas. Take you up to three am Pacific,
six am Eastern, Yes, thirteen minutes away the dance Sensation
sweep of the Nation. What kind of brand new fool
of you? Followed by what my name? But you know
it's even cooler. We're just a little over eight hours
kickoff on our first full slate, our first full Sunday slate.
(01:51:31):
We've already had a couple of NFL games. Green Bay
got beat by Philadelphia in Brazil, and of course Thursday
night and epic start to the season. Baltimore fields to
stick to landing once again, and the Chiefs have served
noticed so full slate on Sunday, including Monday night game
with the Jets and forty nine Ers and then Sunday
(01:51:52):
Night Rams Lions. So you look for that edge, you
look for that edge the first week and one has
truly existed going back to twenty fourteen. Since then, September Dogs,
Divisional Dogs, Week one Divisional Dogs have covered seventy six
(01:52:14):
percent of the time. Now there are three such games
that fall under that category. Sunday one the Carolina Panthers
catching four and a half against New Orleans. The other
the Raiders we're getting three and a half, are now
down to three as they visit the Chargers and Jim
Harbaugh makes his debut. And then of course the Indianapolis
(01:52:39):
Colts they host the incredibly successful Houston Texans. That was
last year, Okay, and you're going to look to the
dog in all three of these games that they not
that it can't change, anything can happen, but it's been
absolutely rock solid. Let's take a minute to examine why.
(01:53:02):
First of all, Week one in the National Football League,
most teams are basically at full strength. Depression hasn't set
in yet. Dogs are still optimistic. The season's not lost,
and Bill Belichick said it best. It really takes the
good teams a good three or four weeks to physically gel,
(01:53:22):
but they haven't geled yet, and so the talent disparity
between the two is quite narrow, and the great teams
haven't broken apart from the pack yet. It's early, so
there's always a tighter game. Typically, coaches have also had
months to game plan these matchups week one, so it
(01:53:44):
leads to the likelihood of dogs covering and actually pulling
off upsets. As a matter of fact, much of the
time the dog wins outright. If you look at the
Raiders game against the Chargers, they're down to three. The
sharps are on the Raiders, and the last time Jim
Harbaugh took over an NFL team in twenty eleven, they improved.
(01:54:05):
They improved a lot. They improved by seven wins. For
that to happen this season, the Bolts would have to
go from five wins to twelve wins. Harball has been
pretty good in season openers. That doesn't mean he covers,
and I think this Raiders team has a lot to prove.
They got a real chip on their shoulder, they have
(01:54:25):
an identity. Do I think the Raiders are gonna good
this year? No, I'm not saying that, But in this spot,
they're very dangerous. They're a very live dog. Would not
surprise me late if the Raiders strolled into Los Angeles,
which well they're already there and beat the Chargers. They're
a live dog. They're the first of the three divisional dogs.
(01:54:47):
I believe we'll cover and the best better get after
it because they had to Baltimore next week and they're
gonna face a pissed off Ravens team. They'll have had
ten days to prepare it, and they don't want to
start Ain two. There's gonna be a different motivation. I
think the Raiders get to Baltimore's going to be a
whole different ballgame. The Raiders don't want to start Roe two.
You're gonna get max effort out of the Raiders. On
on Sunday the Carolina Panthers, this is another interesting divisional game.
(01:55:13):
You know how I feel about Derek Carr, and with
all due respect, he was sixty three and seventy nine
as a starter with the Raiders, and we were told
all he needed was a defense. Well, they are pretty
good defense in Normans last year. What do you do
with it? Nothing? Nothing, And the fans have pretty savvy.
They already see what you know. I'm not picking on
Derek Carr personally. He's a decent human being, good man.
(01:55:33):
I don't want them quarterback in my team. I've seen him,
I've seen enough. I think that's a field goal game.
Hard to believe that New Orleans loses at home to Carolina.
Hard to get excited when you see Bryce Young stats
last year. But I think Dave Canals will get to
steam more compatible competitive. I remember Dave Canals is the
(01:55:55):
guy who fixed Geno Smith, helped Baker Mayfield, and got
Russell Wilson to a ceiling. By the way, New Orleans
they're one and six against the spread against foes that
have a double revenge, and Carolina lost to him twice
last year. I think Carolina keeps it close. Finally, this
may shock you. I not only think that the Indianapolis
Colts will cover, I think they'll beat Houston out right.
(01:56:16):
I really do. The Colts again home divisional dog that
covers at even a higher rate. I think it's like
seventeen to four over the last that's like eighty five
percent over the last how many years. When you when
you are home and you are divisional dog getting points
at the department of redundancy department, I think you get
(01:56:40):
a good effort out of Anthony Richardson. I don't know
that he's long for this league, with the way he
plays and looks up for contact, but I think he's
also got something to prove. And the truth of the
matter is Houston nearly one and eight straight up and
their last nine road openers including ohen six in the
last six games. I know what Houston did last year,
and I love what Tamiko Ryans' is done, and I
love what CJ. Stroud has done. But the truth of
(01:57:02):
the matter is in the National Football League, what goes
up must come down ane of those three games I
mentioned Carolina, the Raiders, and Indianapolis, I think Indianapolis is
the likely of the three to win their game out right.
One of them was gonna win out right. Happens every year.
I expect two of the three to cover. All three
might cover. You never know. All I can tell you
(01:57:22):
is divisional dogs week one, not that it can't change
anything can happen seventy six percent against the number since
twenty fourteen. Those kinds of numbers don't lie. That's the
kind of edge you look for in week one because
you're gonna get a tight, well played game. The better
team hasn't had a chance to pull away yet in
gel everybody's at full strength. You get the picture coming up?
(01:57:43):
What kind of brand new fool of you? Followed by
what my name? Keep it locked? You're listening to the
Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:57:50):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:57:53):
Yeah, that's right, you heard the man. Bernie Fraddle Show
keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Fraddle. We
are coming to lie from the iraq dot com studios
here in Las Vegas. Tirac dot com. I help you
get there an unmatched selection, fast free shipping for your
rodaser protection and over ten thousand recommend an installers tiraq
dot com the way tire buying should be. Well, we
(01:58:17):
have come to that juncture in the week. We've come
to that time in the show. You know you'd love it.
You can't live without it. You see because here our staff,
well Yogi Berra would say, you can observe a lot
by watching, and that's exactly what we do. You see,
because all around this great land of ours, from seed
to oily seed, and even around the globe, people do things. Man,
(01:58:40):
They just they do things that really catch your eyes.
Sometimes they're innocuous and kind of stupid and silly, and
other times they are far more serious, and sometimes they
can land you in jail. But any way you slice it,
any way you characterize it, any way you describe it,
these behaviors always make you end up scratching your head
and asking yourself, what kind of brand new fool are you?
(01:59:03):
So this made me the most unique one I have
ever done, simply because the story itself spans over for
your period. Yeah, let me glue this together for you
and fill in the blanks. Can you imagine going to
jail for nine years for wait for it, stealing chicken wings?
(01:59:27):
You must have wanted them pretty bad, thanks Homer. Ladies
and gentlemen, meet Vera Ldell to the height of COVID
during a time where students were not physically allowed to
be present in school, at least in Cook County, Illinois,
and even though the children were sort of learning remotely,
the school district continued actually to provide meals for students
(01:59:50):
that their families could pick up. Well, here's where the
story begins. One of the employees of the school district,
Vera L. Ladell. She pleaded guilty last month for felony
for stealing more than eleven thousand cases of chicken wings
valued at one point five million, according to a report
(02:00:13):
back in January twenty twenty three in a court document
filed by the Cook County State Attorney's Office. Right, she
was ordering chicken wings to the tune of a million
five that were built of the school district but never
actually given to the students. That's where the massive fraud began.
(02:00:34):
Missus Laddell was keeping them. Yes, she finally got caught
and she entered a plea deal. And it's kind of
interesting because the way the court document reads from July
twenty twenty through February of twenty twenty two, quote Miss
Ladell engaged in a pervasive embezzlement scheme by placing hundreds
of unauthorized orders for food items, primarily chicken wings, with
(02:00:57):
the school's main purveyor. I won't say the name of
the business and the order for separate from the district's
regular orders, and the food service company who did nothing wrong,
thinking they were making legitimate purchases build the district. The
district paid the invoices, and during a mid year audit
in January twenty twenty two, the district's business manager discovered
(02:01:19):
that the food service department had already surpassed its annual
budget by three hundred thousand dollars. So so part a
closer review, you know, kind of like an NFL game
where they look at that TV, they discovered individual invoices
signed by missus Ladell for massive quantities of chicken wings,
an item that was never served as students. Why because
(02:01:40):
they contained bones, you know, by the way, the chickens
the students were not in school either. The story goes
on and on and on with more numbers and facts
and figures designed to make your head spind but suffices
to pay. Miss Ladell pled guilty. She's now facing nine
years in jail. This story has a twist, and because
(02:02:00):
it's football season, I have to share this part of
it in a social media post. A couple of weeks back,
Chris Jones, the stud defensive entackle or stud check that
stud defensive tackle for the Kansasy Chiefs, offered to pay
one point five million in the restitution in an effort
to gain miss Ladell's freedom. Doesn't work that way, by
(02:02:20):
the way, Her attorney said that she could not pay
the restitution because she has a gambling problem. This story
is all over the map. Chris Jones says, I'll pay
it for the wings she stole to get her free. Unfortunately,
doesn't work that way. So there you have a chicken
wings gambling in the Chicago school district and a player
for the Kansas City Chiefs who tried to help her out,
going all the way back to COVID, which leaves you
(02:02:43):
asking yourself here, Ladell, what kind of brand new fool
of you? Okay, bray let her in?
Speaker 14 (02:02:51):
All righty, So we're going to head to Kenosha, Wisconsin
instead of can you hear me now?
Speaker 15 (02:02:56):
Can you charge me now? As kind of what I
was thinking.
Speaker 14 (02:02:59):
So, seven year old Tomorrow Levonnroy broke into Kenoshaus City
Hall on August twenty nine to charge his cell phone.
It was during a popular concert Peanut Butter and Jam
kind of like a kid's concert. It was like a
five o'clock like a park kind of like a park
concert for kids.
Speaker 2 (02:03:17):
You know.
Speaker 14 (02:03:18):
Still the end of the summer, so there was a
ton of witnesses. But the police department responded to a
burglary call at the municipal building, and while the police
officer was approaching the building, he was flagged down by
the individual who pointed at the direction of where Leavon
Roy was going, and the whole glass door was heavily damaged.
(02:03:41):
When police officers entered, they saw him just sitting in
a chair outside.
Speaker 15 (02:03:45):
Of the courtroom, just charging his phone. He was charged. Yeah,
just gotta charge where you got a charge.
Speaker 2 (02:03:52):
I still really wanted to charge that phone. Pretty damn bad.
Speaker 14 (02:03:55):
It must have been really really empty, like just dying
at that point.
Speaker 15 (02:04:00):
He was charged. That's kind of funny.
Speaker 14 (02:04:02):
The next day with disorderly conduct and criminal damage to
property tomorrow, Leavon Roy, what kind of brandewful are you?
Speaker 5 (02:04:11):
Dude?
Speaker 2 (02:04:14):
You know, I thought the foolish part was attending the Peanut,
Butter and Jam concert in the first damn place. I'm
not connecting with that one. But this is what we
do with a full segment here breaking and entering. I
think he said breaking there to charge your damn cell
phone tomorrow.
Speaker 15 (02:04:29):
De moro demorron actually is how I feel.
Speaker 2 (02:04:33):
Yeah, all right, Chef, you always have a rockus good
time with this game. By the way, we haven't gotten
to Florida. We got Kenosha, Wisconsin, and we got Chicago, Illinois.
We're gonna go like the fourth week.
Speaker 9 (02:04:43):
Yes, actually we're actually on to that backyard, Bernie, right
in your neck of the woods there in Las Vegas, Ah,
where police have arrested a man, David McGhee, sixty one,
who's from Winston Salem, North Carolina, which ironically I actually
lived there for a few years, but he's a pastor
from a church in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He was
(02:05:04):
arrested on weapons and drug charges after he flew on
a private jet to go and try to find his
daughter who was living in those storm draams, which actually,
if you go on YouTube, there's some fascinating videos on
the underground homeless city in Las Vegas and those storm dreams,
and he decided to bring guns and drugs. Specifically, he
(02:05:28):
reported an item missing from his room, which of course
prompted police to come and investigate. They asked if he
had a gun. He said, yeah, I got a shotgun
in my guitar case. Now, given what happened, given what
happened back in twenty seventeen, police take guns in a
hotel room very very seriously. So they began searching found
(02:05:50):
in Ar fifteen with a scope. Also found fentanyl and
other powdery substances, and when asked about it, he advised
the detective he brought the fetanyl from North Carolina in
his private jet and paid approximately one thousand for it,
in that he was a user of it and intended
to distribute the fetanyls to his dormage jet. So he's
got a he's a pastor with a private jet. He's
(02:06:11):
a pastor, a pastor at a church and guns private jets.
Speaker 2 (02:06:16):
He's hanging hero out the homeless in Las Vegas. I'm sorry,
go ahead.
Speaker 9 (02:06:18):
So apparently his daughter, yea, his daughter is apparently missing
within that homeless encampment in the storm drain, so he
went to go look for her so he can distribute
that fetanyl to her. Well, of course he was arrested
on weapons and drug charges, So, uh, man, one thing
to have your daughter missing in a homeless encampment another
(02:06:38):
to try to bring weapons and drugs to her in
that place. So David mcgiver sixty one, what kind of
brand new fool are you?
Speaker 2 (02:06:48):
Man? That has got so many moving parts? My head's
going to explode. So we got charging cell phones, breaking
the law in Kenosho, we got stealing chicken wings in Chicago,
and don't know what they have that Winston sale in
Las Vegas day was but man, it was a good one.
All right, Good job everybody, And that will conclude another
raucous uh edition of what kind of brand new fool You,
(02:07:12):
which now enables us to segue and our second favorite
bit that we lovingly refer to as what my name?
All Right? Got some really good ones tonight right in
the theme with where we are in the sports calendar?
All right? Before Nick Saban took over at Alabama, Now
Alabama had never had a single Heisman Trophy winner. Now
(02:07:36):
they have four.
Speaker 17 (02:07:37):
But I was the first one bre what my name are?
Mark Ingram got it winter Winter chicken dinner.
Speaker 15 (02:07:48):
That's a total guest. Yeah, that's what I was just
I was just praying for that.
Speaker 2 (02:07:53):
Honestly, Mark is a really good dude. You saw at
people are we You know you saw him today on
Big noon Kickoff and had a nice talk with him
with Radio Row. Well, nobody gives a damn about a name,
draft or move along. I love I love you really
good dude though, all right. In the last four seasons,
I have thrown in the National Football League the second
(02:08:14):
most touchdown passes the chef Kevin Wyatt. What my name?
Speaker 9 (02:08:18):
The last four seasons, the second most touchdown passes.
Speaker 4 (02:08:21):
Yes, I'm getting better, knighted, I'm gonna go. Joe Burrow.
Speaker 2 (02:08:25):
Not Joe Burrow. Could have been him, but he's been
hurt so darn much. In the last four seasons, I've
thrown the second most touchdown passes in the National Football League,
Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 18 (02:08:39):
It's not Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 2 (02:08:41):
Not Aaron Rodgers. In the last four seasons, I've thrown
the second most touchdown passes in the NFL. Bre What
my name?
Speaker 14 (02:08:49):
Josh Allen two for two, Josh Allen.
Speaker 2 (02:08:56):
You know, Josh Allen gets a lot of gets a
lot of grief, But the dude can play, all right.
In the last four seasons, I've thrown the most touchdown
passes in the National Football League chef, Kevin Wyrett, what
my name?
Speaker 9 (02:09:11):
Hmm, last four seasons, most touchdown passes. I'm gonna go
Dak Prescott.
Speaker 2 (02:09:18):
Not Dak Prescott. In the last four seasons in the
National Football League, I've thrown more TD passes than anyone.
Speaker 18 (02:09:25):
Mark Ramsey, what my name, mahomes?
Speaker 4 (02:09:29):
It is in fact, Patrick w blinking on these obvious ones.
Speaker 2 (02:09:32):
You guys are on everybody's doing. Okay, now I mentioned
his name earlier in the show. I'm the defensive end
who tackled Aaron Rodgers last year Week one, which created
the Achilles injury four plays into the season. Bree, what
my name?
Speaker 4 (02:09:53):
It starts with.
Speaker 14 (02:09:56):
Some the Leroy Reynolds or something. Oh my gosh, and
I heard it twy. I have no idea I'm blanking.
Speaker 2 (02:10:02):
It's obscure and the truth of the matter is so look.
Moving along in the I'm the defensive end who tackled
Aaron Rodgers last year during his season ending injury, creating
the Achilles injury after just four plays. Kevin wire at
the chef, what my name? Oh?
Speaker 9 (02:10:20):
I couldn't even begin to guess on this one, all right,
I don't even remember they played.
Speaker 2 (02:10:25):
Well, they played Buffalo here's a clue. He's playing for
the forty nine ers now, and in one of those
odd weird circle of life events, guess what Monday Night,
when Aaron Rodgers and the Jets take the field against
the Niners, he'll be playing again dejavol over again Yogi
from last Monday Night last year when he was with Buffalo,
And he's already said he wants to tackle Aaron Rodgers again.
(02:10:47):
So Mark Ramsey, I'm the defensive end who tackled Aaron
Rodgers last year Week one and Monday Night Football, creating
his injury after just four plays. What my name.
Speaker 18 (02:10:59):
I don't know about. I'll just say too tall Jones.
Speaker 2 (02:11:02):
I was waiting for you to name somebody from before
nineteen seventy five. All right, it is actually Leonard Floyd.
Speaker 4 (02:11:09):
Leonard ram Leonard Floyd.
Speaker 2 (02:11:10):
Okay, Leonard Floyd. Let's flip to baseball. You know, just
this past week, Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies hit his
thirteenth leadoff home run this season. Thirteenth leadoff home run
just this season alone. I'm the all time leader in
leadoff home runs in a career. Brie, what my name.
Speaker 15 (02:11:35):
E Ken?
Speaker 2 (02:11:37):
Not a bad guess he's a stud. I don't know
that Griffy led off a lot, but not regardless, I
lead all major leaguers in history with eighty one leadoff
home runs to start the game. That's the department of
redoneacy department. Kevin Wyrett, the chef. What my name?
Speaker 4 (02:11:55):
I'm going Ricky Henderson.
Speaker 2 (02:11:56):
It is, in fact, Ricky Henderson.
Speaker 4 (02:11:57):
Absolutely, I am the greatest of all time.
Speaker 2 (02:12:00):
Remember that when he stole the base and picked it up? Yes,
we got some, all right, everybody's doing great tonight, all right.
I am the only player in NFL history to have
won the MVP Award five times. Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 18 (02:12:17):
So the question again?
Speaker 2 (02:12:19):
I am the only player in NFL history to have
won the MVP Award five times, Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 18 (02:12:28):
Tony Dorset?
Speaker 2 (02:12:30):
Not Tony Dorset. I'm the only NFL player in history
to have won the MVP Award five times? Bre you
what my name?
Speaker 14 (02:12:39):
I'm gonna guess I'm just thinking multiple Peyton Manning.
Speaker 2 (02:12:43):
Peyton Manning is absolutely correct. Five MVPs for that knock
under benefit. The couple went forward right.
Speaker 4 (02:12:50):
Co MVP with Steve McNair. Is that count?
Speaker 2 (02:12:53):
Yeah? It definitely counts. Yeah, and that brings back a
good memory. I'm going to say that was nineteen ninety nine.
It must have been, yeah, yeah, exactly. All right, this
is very topical since we have so many rookie quarterbacks
starting on Sunday. I'm the last rookie first round quarterback
(02:13:17):
to win in my first ever start in the National
Football League. I'm the last one to do it. The
Chef Kevin Is that where I left off? Chef Kevin Wire?
What my name?
Speaker 9 (02:13:25):
I'm gonna guess, the last quarterback to win his first
start rookie quarterback and win his first.
Speaker 2 (02:13:31):
Start, the last first round, the last first rookie quarterback
to win my first to win the debut in the NFL.
What my name?
Speaker 4 (02:13:39):
I'm gonna go.
Speaker 2 (02:13:39):
C J.
Speaker 4 (02:13:40):
Stroud, Not c J.
Speaker 2 (02:13:41):
Stroud. I'm the last rookie first round quarterback to win
in his first start ever in the National Football League.
Mark Ramsey, What my name?
Speaker 7 (02:13:55):
Uh?
Speaker 18 (02:13:57):
Mark Sanchez?
Speaker 2 (02:13:58):
Mark, I'm the last rookie first round quarterback to win
in his first start debut in the National Football League.
Bree you what my name?
Speaker 15 (02:14:08):
I'm gonna guys, Sam Donald?
Speaker 2 (02:14:10):
It is, in fact, Sam Donald. Sam Donald did it.
Did it against the Detroit Lions, and I'll never forget that.
Speaker 9 (02:14:17):
Listed like two dozen guys bell follow it against Sam Donald.
Speaker 2 (02:14:20):
Well, here's the thing. I remember the game very well.
Get first rolls against the Lions. He was back in
twenty eighteen, and he threw a pick six to start
the game.
Speaker 4 (02:14:29):
I remember that.
Speaker 2 (02:14:30):
Yeah, like the first or second player of the game.
Here we go Lions. No, no, oh, no, he suck again.
The Lions went on to lose that game. And listen,
I'm one of the few people that don't think Sam
Donald's that bad. He's in a pretty good situation. Now,
let's see what he can do. But I don't think
he's that bad. But Sam Donald is in fact the
correct answer. Now here's a twist on that question. Here's
a variation on that question. I'm the last number one
(02:14:54):
overall pick, not just first round. The last number one
overall pick is quarterback to win my first ever start
in the National Football League, Kevin Wyatt, what my name?
Speaker 4 (02:15:06):
The last number one overall pick?
Speaker 2 (02:15:08):
Number one overall picks want.
Speaker 4 (02:15:10):
To start, I'm gonna go Cam Newton.
Speaker 2 (02:15:15):
Not Cam Newton. I'm the last number one overall pick
in the National Football League. To win my first start,
Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 18 (02:15:27):
I'm guessing Joe Burrow.
Speaker 2 (02:15:30):
Not Joe Burrow. By the way, Cam Newton's a good guess.
He's through for like four hundred yards in his first game,
and I don't think they won all right, last number
one overall pick in the National Football League, number one
overall pick is a quarterback to win my first start,
my debut start. I'll bree you what my name to
not toua. Okay, we're gonna go around the room sometimes
(02:15:53):
we do this. Here's a clue. He's got a brother
that's still playing in the National Football League. Can anybody
yell it out? Going once, going twice, going three times?
Speaker 15 (02:16:05):
David Carr, No, David Carr is.
Speaker 2 (02:16:08):
The correct day, because Derek Carr is still playing.
Speaker 4 (02:16:11):
Oh gay, if you want to call it that.
Speaker 2 (02:16:13):
If you want to call it that, David.
Speaker 9 (02:16:14):
Carr is really taking a page out of the the
memory book there.
Speaker 14 (02:16:20):
I wanted to come back on a Saturday and make
a good impression guy.
Speaker 2 (02:16:23):
Yeah, if memory serves of course, Derek Carr or David
car excuse me, was playing for the Houston Texans, and
I believe he did it against the Dallas Cowboys. I
think he did it against the Dallas Cowboys, and it's
all the way back in twenty two. Yeah, twenty two.
All right, let's do one more, shall we? Okay, I
(02:16:46):
love the enthusiasm, all right. I still hold the all
time National Football League record for most rushing yards in
a Week one game, Kevin most.
Speaker 4 (02:17:00):
Rushing yards in a Week one game.
Speaker 2 (02:17:02):
In a Week one game.
Speaker 9 (02:17:03):
I remember Jamal Charles towards the Raiders like ten years ago.
So I'm swimming the gas.
Speaker 2 (02:17:08):
That's a good name from the past from Texas. And
know it's not Jamal Charles, but I like that name.
I like that name.
Speaker 4 (02:17:15):
I think it was Week one, but.
Speaker 2 (02:17:17):
I still hold the all time NFL record Week one
for most rushing yards in an NFL game, Mark Ramsey,
what my name?
Speaker 18 (02:17:23):
The Nigerian Nightmare?
Speaker 2 (02:17:26):
Christian o'coya from Ocadella College. No it's not him, but Mark,
once again, Mark entertaining us with the names. I still
hold the all time record for most rushing yards in
a Week one National Football League game. Bre you what
my name?
Speaker 15 (02:17:42):
I was gonna guess Marshaun Lynch, not Marsha Lynch.
Speaker 2 (02:17:47):
I'm not sure if you guys have heard of. This
guy's name was O. J. Simpson. O Wow did it?
Back in nineteen seventy three, ran for two hundred and
fifty yards against the New England Patriots. All right, great
job everybody all the way around. Good research on everybody
on the what my name and certainly the the what
(02:18:10):
kind of brand new fool of you? And just for
the record, it was September eleventh. Cam Newton twenty eleven.
He made his debut. I remember this. He was twenty
four to thirty seven, four and twenty two yards, two touchdowns,
played a great game. Unfortunately they lost on the road
to the Arizona Cardinals. So that was that was a
good guess. But the last guy to do it David
(02:18:31):
Carr and of course the last rookie first rounder, Sam Darno.
Speaker 8 (02:18:36):
Four.
Speaker 2 (02:18:36):
We're starting tomorrow. I've already on record saying I think
Kayleb Williams is going to get beat. I'm not hating,
not hating. I'm just saying, okay, people just relax out there.

Speaker 4 (02:19:56):
They come to South Bend, Indiana and they.
Speaker 12 (02:19:58):
Knock off the number five team in the country and
Are You?
Speaker 11 (02:20:02):
Sixteen?
Speaker 12 (02:20:04):
Notre Dame fourteen The football Gods, We're shining down, are you?
Speaker 9 (02:20:10):
That was the Northern Illinois Radio network with the call
as the Fighting Irish taken down by the Huskies sixteen
to fourteen. Northern Illinois the field goal in the final minute,
then they blocked Notre Dames go ahead attempt in the
final seconds to secure arguably the biggest win in program history.
Oregon the seventh rank Ducks for the second week in
(02:20:31):
a row in a much tighter than expected contest with
a team they were favored against. They trailed against Idaho
last week, and they were in action against Boise State
and they needed a last second field goal to get
by the Broncos thirty seven to thirty four. Top ten
matchup in ann Arbor. Third ranked Texas takes down number
ten Michigan in blowout fashion, thirty one to twelve behind
(02:20:54):
an outstanding performance by Queen You were three touchdown passes
on the day for the Longhorn quarterback. Number eight Penn
State in a little bit of trouble against Bowling Green,
but the Elions do win this one. Thirty four twenty
seven Number fourteen Tennessee blought win against number twenty four
NC State fifty one to ten. Number fifteen Oklahoma edging
out Houston sixteen twelve. Sixteen thranked Oklahoma State a double
(02:21:17):
overtime winner against Arkansas thirty nine to thirty one. It
was a great game in New Orleans, number seventeen Kansas
State taking the lead on a fourth quarter fumble return
for a touchdown and then they got a key interception
in the end zone as Tulane in the final seconds
trying to drive down and tie the game, but the
Wildcats do secure the win thirty four to twenty seven.
(02:21:38):
Illinois ten points in the last ten minutes to win
it twenty three to seventeen over number nineteen Kansas, Iowa
State and a number twenty one Iowa It's the Cyclones
on a late fifty four yard field goal to win
it twenty to nineteen. Syracuse over number twenty three Georgia
Tech thirty one to twenty eight. And in NFL News,
we got a few updates from Ian Rappaport as well
(02:21:59):
as Adam Chefter in ESPN. First, we got an update
from ESPN regarding the forty nine ers, saying Trent Williams
will have a full workload Monday night, however, and this
is key for fantasy owners that will be reduced snaps
for Brandon iu Gas for Rappaport, he had several updates
in the last couple of hours. Tyler Lockett, the Seahawks
(02:22:20):
wide receiver, listened as questionable with a thigh injury. He
has expected to play today. Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey has
a hamstring issue. He will attempt to play today, but
he is questionable, and he won't be at his full strength,
and he's gonna try to get give it a go,
but they're gonna say he's on a pitch count. Lions
offensive tackle Dj Reader is attempting to return from the
(02:22:42):
quad injury, but according to Rapaport, his sources say that
he's not ready to return to play this week. Next
week is a far more realistic timeline. And Bear's wide
receiver Keenan Allen and pass rusher Montes Sweat listen as questionable,
are expected to play on Sunday. And one more from
(02:23:02):
Adam Schefter. Patriots running back Antonio Gibson does play into play,
he is questionable with a hip injury. Back to you,
Bernie all.
Speaker 2 (02:23:12):
Right, chef Russell's vocal cords. So the real American football
is upon us, but we can't ignore it. The football
they fell fut b O L Well, there's always news,
including a major retirement, So we bring you christophets World of.
Speaker 3 (02:23:32):
Soccer, the greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drama.
It's all here in this report from the World of soccer.
Speaker 13 (02:23:53):
A quick international break here this weekend, Bernie, we got
UAPA Nations League in Conker calf in action and across
the world, so club soccer takes again a back seat.
Not really much to talk about besides a very shocking
three to one victory for Italy over France to start
the group stage of UEFA Nations League. Just killing Ambape
(02:24:15):
very invisible. I mean, he's been scoring goals in his
Madrid showing, showing, but in general some very stark, very
surprising results here. For the French side of things, US
is not playing in Nations League this weekend. They'll be
having a friendly on Saturday with Canada. It's a good
time to step back and once again appreciate what has
(02:24:36):
been the almost unstoppable dominance of one Earling Holland. We'll
love to see what he else on the international side
of things, But can we talk a little bit about
what he's done out of the gate for Manchester City. Now,
if you don't know the name Earling Holland, he really
came onto the scene in twenty twenty two where he
came over from German side Borussia Dortmund and almost immediately
(02:24:57):
out of the gate just scoring a tremendous amount of goals.
In his first year with Manchester City, he had more
goals than appearances. So far in twenty twenty four. Right now,
Earling Holland has seven goals in three appearances. And to
help you with that math, let's just go ahead and
tell you how that breaks down. Right now, two of
those games are hat tricks. Two of those games he
(02:25:18):
had three goals in two separate games. Yes, it's unbelievable
and just a tremendous, tremendous force. Already starting off, Earling
Hollands joined some exclusive Premier League history because only six
players have ever scored hat tricks in consecutive Premier League matches,
and his scoring records already put him en route as
(02:25:40):
a very early early favorite for the Beloondior. Just a
tremendous amount of power once again, as Manchester City just
reminds the world that they may have one of the
greatest young players in the world right now. I will
put him up there against Killing and Bape for the
time being, just because this scoring does not seem to
(02:26:01):
be stopping anytime soon. But as we said, Bernie, the
men's side is on a break here and for the
international competition, and it's a good time to talk about
the retirement of one of America's great Alex Morgan announcing
this week that she intends to end her playing career
after this weekend in professional women's soccer, that she will
(02:26:23):
be saying her role moving into the future will be
investing in women's sports. Also announced that she is pregnant
with her second child and will end her professional playing
career after Sunday's game against the North Carolina Courage in
the National Women's Soccer League NWSL. This brings to a
close a tremendous career for Alex Morgan, thirty five years old,
(02:26:47):
with two World Cup titles to her name and a
gold medal from twenty twelve London Olympics. Morgan has been
around the block, been working for fifteen years here with
the national team. All in all, one hundred and twenty
three goals for the United States in about just over
two hundred and twenty appearances, and it's important to remember
(02:27:08):
that Alex Morgan was doing this bright and early. She
was one of the youngest US soccer players to go
out there and score twenty goals in a single season.
She earned accolades throughout her her entire career and led
the way in turning the US women's team into a
force that is recognized the world over one of the
largest in women's sports, along with Carli Lloyd and Meghan Rapino,
(02:27:28):
and she was for a long time the last link
to that old generation. It was not assumed that she'd
be playing in another Women's World Cup coming up here
given her age at this point, but also at the
same time continue to play professional soccer for the San
Diego Wave, but after Sunday that will be no more.
(02:27:48):
So make sure to tune in if you can Sunday
as the San Diego Wave take on the North Carolina
Courage as the final farewell to more Morgan, a true
American patriot when it comes to the game of soccer.
Speaker 4 (02:28:04):
Now only, however, if ESPN would cover it a little
bit better.
Speaker 13 (02:28:08):
I don't know if you saw this, Bernie, and I
understand I'm getting into some thorny territory here. People love
artificial intelligence or what they call AI, which is actually
large language models, is not actually intelligent. It's just guessing
at what you do. But this has been the big
thing for investors is people who try to figure out
ways to shoehorn in artificial intelligence AI large language models into.
Speaker 4 (02:28:30):
Our sports and our sports coverage.
Speaker 13 (02:28:33):
We had this incident here with NBC putting on a
fake Al Michaels to do recaps of Olympics during in Paris.
But ESPN made an announcement here this week that said,
and this was from their front row. This is from
their big pr thing that they were trying to bring
(02:28:54):
in a new AI project that was going to, in
their words, basically help them write stories that would serve
what they call underserved sports. One of those happening to
be the National Women's Soccer League and WSL along with
the Premier Lacrosse League. So this is something they've been
wanting to roll out and what they call underserved sports.
(02:29:16):
It's important to note too that the recap blurb they
meant to showcase. The feature got the record of the
Washington Spirit wrong, so right out of the gate, just
really really not working well. I find this very cynical.
I find its decision, ESPN's decision to use AI technology
(02:29:36):
from Microsoft very cynical. To call them underserved is ridiculous
to call them. And what you do if you see
an underserved sport and you think you need to solve
the problem is you hire people to actually cover those sports.
AI cannot cover those sports. It can only regurgitate, screw
up and make mistakes. You're better off not covering them
(02:29:58):
at all than putting an AI on it, because it's insulting.
There's many people out there who are very passionate about
the NWSL.
Speaker 4 (02:30:06):
I've met in many of those people.
Speaker 13 (02:30:08):
They would gladly write about the NWSL if given the opportunity. Instead,
you roll out this AI slop that just gets facts
wrong all the time and insults real hard working journalists,
hardworking coverage and insults that sport by deciding to put
something in there that just literally guessing it doesn't know anything,
(02:30:28):
It doesn't know what a right score is. It scrapes
the internet and tries to make an inference and guess
what it thinks is right, and in this case, all
it can do is just keep getting things wrong. I've
seen Gannett roll out the same thing to try to
cover high school sports and it is always, always, always
pointed out at getting stuff wrong all the time. This
is not a new innovative to technology. It's been tried
(02:30:50):
many times before, and it's not really helping anyone at
the end of the day by serving them with aislop
instead of actual coverage of these games.
Speaker 4 (02:30:57):
What it is is a quick buck in.
Speaker 13 (02:30:59):
It's to try to get investors to show to show investors, look, look.
Speaker 4 (02:31:03):
We're using AI. We're using AI.
Speaker 13 (02:31:05):
Because investors then blindly then throw money at you. This
is not something that belongs in the world of soccer.
Soccer is a sport of the people for the people,
and it has always been very sensitive to that. Shame
on ESPN for doing this, Shame on these AI companies
for trying to sell us this idea that it can
replace human beings covering these sports. And ESPN, if you
(02:31:27):
think the NWSL is underserved, go hire some people to
start serving them.
Speaker 4 (02:31:32):
That's all I've got for you this week, Bernie. Enjoy
the world of soccer.
Speaker 2 (02:31:36):
Wow, a lot to get off as chefs there, and
of course the end of an era Alex Morgan as
she moves on getting pregnant and playing a game and
other net not much going on. Well, I won't be watching.
I'll be watching the other football. And if there's only
one game I could watch all weekend, would have to
be Aaron Rodgers' money and I have to see what
(02:31:57):
that looks like. I have to see what that looks like.
I mean, by the way they're playing the Niners, it's
gonna be abut it's gonna be a hell of a game.
But if there's only one game I could watch Sunday
all day Sunday, Well, this particular game, it's not a
divisional matchup, it's not even really on paper something that
would look sexy. But I will say this, there are
(02:32:19):
so many storylines around this game that this is the
one game I would watch, and I'm gonna watch. I'll
share that. Coming up, I'm Bernie fradda Were Company live
from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio, tirect dot Com Studios.
Keep it locked. You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, we are wrapping it
up on the Bernie Frattle Show Company live from the
(02:32:40):
Tyrek dot Com studios here in Las Vegas. Before I
go any further, I want to thank my broadcast team
back in Los Angeles. They've been with me since eleven
pm Pacific time on Saturday night. Shay was out Bree
stepping in for Shay tonight. Thank you for very much
(02:33:01):
our executive producer, Mark Ramsey, our technical producer turning all
the dials keeping us glued together, and of course Kevin
Wyre at the chef on the updates and all three
of you. Outstanding job tonight. Let's keep it one hundred
when we don't have our crew, we don't have a show,
so appreciate all the efforts that it would be since
eleven pm on Saturday night. We got a hell of
(02:33:23):
a lot of nice feedback tonight on on Twitter. All right,
So the one game that's really got my curiosity for Sunday,
let me just try to set this up and you know,
figure it out who it is pretty quickly, you know.
Back in twenty twenty, Deshaun Watson completed seventy percent of
his passes. He threw about three hundred and two yards
a game. He threw for thirty three touchdowns and only
(02:33:43):
seven interceptions, but his team won just four games that season.
Football is not an easy game. Let's start with the
quarterback matchups between Cleveland and Dallas. He got DeShawn former
Texan star. He's played just twelve games in two seasons.
It's time for this guy to earn his money. Is
he gonna do it this year? Have no idea, but
(02:34:07):
that's why I'm curious. Dak Prescott as a career regular
season starter in Dallas. He's won games, but he's two
and five in the playoffs, four and five on the
road last year. Those are the numbers that resonate with
Dallas fans and more importantly, Jerry Jones and I get
it that Dak wants to be paid. Cleveland and their
(02:34:29):
defense at home gave up the fewest yards of anybody
last seasons. Matter of fact, at home, their defense was
so historic it had as good as numbers as the
Legion of Boom defense in Seattle back when they were
winning Super Bowls. The storylines Mike McCarthy basically a lame duck.
(02:34:50):
You rarely see a situation. I think maybe he might
have happened to Jason Garrett as well. Back in the
day where you're wandering the sidelines. You don't have a
contract next year. Ceedee Lamb got paid. So is he
gonna step up and do what he's got to do?
Zach I will tell you Dak really needs him, no
two ways about it. It's importance to that offense. MICHAEH. Parsons,
same situation. The mental outlook in Dallas to me, feels weird.
(02:35:14):
It's a weird vibe. Dallas is gonna have three new
starters on the offensive line. They'renna thrown right into the fire.
Cleveland's not gonna have Nick Chubb, which makes it leads
me to my point, who's gonna win this game? Well,
here's a clue. Since nineteen ninety, NFL teams who rushed
the ball for more than two hundred yards in game
one of the season, they're thirty four and five straight up,
(02:35:34):
thirty one and seven against the number, including seventeen and
one against the number as a dog on the flip side.
Over the same span, Teams that rush the ball for
fewer than one hundred yards in game one, well, the
only cover about forty percent of the time. Last year,
the Ravens led the league in rushing yards per game
throughout the season. One hundred and fifty six Bengals were
(02:35:55):
last year. Get the picture. What's my point? Tell me
who rushes for more yards in Klee one on Sunday,
and I'll tell you who wins the game? Too tough
to call. If Cleveland had Nick Chubb, I would pick Cleveland.
It's not a game I'm gonna bet. By the way,
remember Divisional dogs week one seventy six percent since twenty fourteen.
(02:36:15):
You got the Raiders, you got the Carolina Panthers, and
you got the Indianapolis Colts as a home dog. That
all fit into that category. We'll see how they do. Right.
I'll be back on these airwaves next Friday night at
eleven pm Pacific with more high jinks, lots of fun,
and to your calls during the midnight hour. In the meantime,
(02:36:36):
keep it lock Lots of great coverage here on Fox
Sports Radio, including my guy, my buddy, my friend. The
biggest thing to come out at Cincinnati since Hutere Pol
Beer and Skyline Chili, that would be the great Andy Furman.
So keep it locked up next Andy Furman on Fox
Sports Rader, Keep it locked on Bernie Fratt, or have
a good weekend
