So let's get it on.
Speaker 5 (01:54):
I'll tell you what you'll find out about forty minutes
or so, just how big plaques is.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Big Game is. We all know about the super Bowl.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
But yes, there's there's a moment in Plaxa's career that
I'm not sure that he necessarily even knows what I'm
talking about. That unfortunately for me, hit home with one
of my favorite teams. So we're gonna we're gonna dive
into that that's gonna come up in forty minutes don't
start notting. Hey, hey, we're on the same side with
some things. This one you broke my heart. That that's
(02:26):
all it is.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
That's all it is. Hey, hey, I have a personal
mana just business. It's less.
Speaker 5 (02:31):
Is this on this Saturday afternoon about twenty five, twenty
six years ago. We'll get to that in a little
bit later, but we have to start off with the
big news in the National Football League this week. The
Carolina Panthers benching Bryce Young. And this isn't just a
normal benching. This is a number one overall pick from
(02:52):
a draft that happened a little over a year ago.
Panthers zero and two to start the season. Bress Young
has yet to throw a touchdown pass in this season.
How surprised were you that Carolina ended up making this
move so early on in this season?
Speaker 4 (03:07):
You know what, unlike everybody else, what they've been talking
about all week with the bitch of Bryce Young. I
have to be honest, man, I wasn't surprised at all.
I mean, I have to be honest. I mean, unfortunately
for him, you know, he's twenty three years old, he's
already had you know, two different head coaches and three
(03:29):
offensive coordinators in a nineteen game span, and that's not
good for any quarterback. But I do also feel that
the organization, I think they're starting to realize that they
got it wrong. They traded up from the ninth pick
to get Bryce Young to the first pick, and you
know what, you could have had Sej strou Sure, And
(03:52):
I think that really burns that they got it wrong.
And I think they went into this draft process listening
to Nick Saban and he sold Carolina on Bryce Young.
But you got to go back to college. I mean,
look at he had a brilliant, brilliant college career, but
(04:12):
you also have to take into account and look at
the guys that he was playing with. He had a
Mark Cooper, he had Jered Judy, he had Calvin Ridley.
If you go back and look at those games when
he was playing in Alabama, he wasn't making contested throws.
He didn't have to be accurate to get these guys
(04:32):
in football because these guys were so talented.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
That they were four and five yards wide open.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
So all he had to do was get the ball
up in there, and these dynamic playmakers were making plays
for him.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
You know, it's funny because you mentioned Saban, and I
agree with you along these lines. It's always surprised me
that we have these. I guess we hold it against
Ohio State prior to CJ. Stride that they couldn't it's
an NFL quarterback. But it wasn't like Alabama had this
murderer's role. You know, Tua was still young yet we
(05:06):
you know mac Jones was a first round pick, but
it wasn't. It wasn't like Alabama was just producing quarterback
after quarterback after quarterback.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Is that all Nick Saban getting Bryce Young at number one?
Speaker 5 (05:18):
Or do you think there was just the fact that
we have this you know, crush on Alabama and we
assume that everybody with a Crimson tide's going to succeed
at the NFL because history doesn't show that.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
I think it was more on the the the finished
product from Ohio State quarterbacks going to the NFL, and
I think Carolina made that decision based off the history
of the quarterbacks that were drafted from Ohio State going
to the next level. I really believe that, I really do.
(05:53):
I don't think it was more Nick Saban. I think
it was Carolina doing their research, the due diligence with
scouting and saying, you know what, the quarterbacks moving on
from Ohio State in the next level, they haven't done well.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
And I also say this.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
People may not like this what I'm i about to
say about Bryce Young, but I believe his stature and
if with him going out and playing at this level
is his major deficiency.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
Man, I just believe he's too small. I really do.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
You have to play him in the shotgun and if
you look at when he gets pressure up the middle,
he can't see. If you look at that scene route
that interception he threw last week, he was throwing to
a spot. I don't mean, I don't even believe that
he saw the wire receiving. Now the field and the
first player of the game againsh I believe it's the
New Orleans Saints.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
I don't believe the young man can see. He wouldn't
come out and admit it.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
But he has to be in an office where they
can move him around, getting him out of the pocket.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
He can't play on the center. He has to. If
you look at him in the shotgun, he's.
Speaker 4 (06:59):
Like seven US deep just to see and and I'm
trying to vision him, you know, making these plays with
a Michael Strahan standing in front of a JPP or Justin.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Tuck or Ocean you and you are. They're not even
really trying to sack them.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
They're just pushing them back, getting their hands up, and
they're smothering them.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
He can't see down the football field.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
And everybody says it's not about size, but at the
quarterback position it is. And I have to be honest,
I played this game for a very long time. Some
of those presses that he's getting up in the middle,
you know those you know, the the Justin Herberts and
the Patrick Mahomes and Eli Manning.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
These guys who.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
Are six four, sixty five and sixty six, they can
they can take a rush coming up the field and
still deliver the football. Soon somebody breaks through the pocket
in the middle. He has to get out of the
pocket because he can no longer see. And I'm telling you,
I'm looking at some of the throws that he making,
these defense alignment and these defense ends, they're they're they're
(08:05):
getting pushed in the pocket, they're getting their hands up
and a young man just can't see over top of them.
Speaker 5 (08:11):
It's funny because we just we've kind of laid this
out in the last five minutes, you feel that Carolina
felt like we don't want to follow up the history
of an Ohio State quarterbacks, so we're going to stay
away from that. Yet, when we talk about short quarterbacks plaques,
the only quarterback we talk about is Drew Brees, and
that's because I feel like it's the only quarterback we
(08:33):
can talk about. Any quarterback of a of a smaller stature.
Drew Brees obviously is the high mark. But now it
doesn't pay a lot to compare anybody to Russell Wilson.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Right now. Bryce Young is not Kyler Murray, completely different.
Speaker 5 (08:48):
So when we're talking about that type of quarterback, the
only person that we can say is Drew Brees. And
while Breese is on another planet for the type of
quarterback that he was else, I think it says a
lot on how many smaller quarterbacks didn't make it work.
And that's maybe while we're seeing Bryce Young have the
difficulty to your point of being just five ten.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
But look at the offense that Drew Brees was in.
He had a running game, Sean Payton was a great
play caller. A lot of those passes that Drew Brees
were throwing. They were quick game. He was getting the
ball out quick to the sideline, and he had a
pluth through of good wide receivers.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
But at the.
Speaker 4 (09:30):
Same time, he was in an offense that fit that
fit his size, and.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Sean Payton was a great play caller. Bryce Young doesn't
have that.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
He's already had two head coaches in a nineteen games
man and three offensive coordinators.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
So he's not.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
Going to have a rapport with the play calling and
the wide receivers and the offense. And Carolina has to
be beating themselves up and David Temple, all those guys
got it wrong.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
And where did it go from here? I'll tell you
what I think.
Speaker 5 (10:05):
Andy Dalton is starting this week, not only because Bryce
Young has been so bad. I think that Dan Morgan,
being a former player as your GM, because I think
the decision came from above.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
The way that Dave.
Speaker 5 (10:17):
Canalis sounded on Sunday was different from how he sounded
on Monday, and I know he wants to take responsibility
as a head coach. But whether it came from Temper,
whether it came from Morgan, whether it came from whoever,
you need to have something good happen to this team,
and that's why I think Andy Dalton is starting on Sunday.
Aside from being dead last in points and yards this season,
(10:38):
it was a team that was thirty first in points
last year, thirty second that's dead last for those not
in the know, and yards last year, and twenty ninth
in points. So this is now, you know, nineteen games
basically of Bryce Young's career where this team has been
a rock bottom. You just need something good from it.
That's why I think that the decision came from above.
Speaker 4 (10:59):
I mean, young men, it's only average in one hundred
and seventy three passing yards a game, eleven touchdowns and
thirteen interceptions. I mean, if you look at Dan Morgan's career,
what position did he play? Linebacker? He played linebacker. So
he understands what Bryce Young is going through right now
(11:19):
because he is seeing their offense through his eyes from
a defensive standpoint, and he knows what the deficiency is
from Bryce Young. It's not that he can't play the position.
I really, he's just too small of a quarterback to
play in this league. And you know, throw guys open
(11:41):
and to be accurate and to put the ball where
it's supposed to be where where whas he can only
get it and he doesn't have that at this level.
Speaker 5 (11:50):
I don't think it's time is over in Carolina just yet.
I'm not saying to wrap it up is a rap.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
You think it's a rap.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
I think it's a rap. I don't think you go
back to him. I mean, what are you gonna do.
You're gonna put him back on a football field and further,
you know, let him lose his confidence. And from a
locker room standpoint, I don't believe the guys think that
he's the best option for them to win. I believe
(12:19):
everybody is looking at Andy Dalton in practice sure, and
they're saying Andy Dalton gives her the best chance to
win on Sundays, and that's what they went with.
Speaker 5 (12:30):
If you if you lay out this scenario though, this
is why. This is why I think there's still some
juice left in the orange. Maybe not a lot, but
there's some left. If the Panthers win with Andy Dalton,
Bryce Young is not gonna see the field.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
That's that's not gonna happen.
Speaker 5 (12:45):
However, if they don't win with Andy Dalton at some
point this year, you got to make sure because going
in the next year, you're gonna have to draft a quarterback.
So you gotta make sure that everything is exhausted with
Bryce on you.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
And then there's still there's still the possibility.
Speaker 5 (13:03):
And I don't wish this out anyone, and I hate
even putting it out in the universe, but there could
be an injury situation where Bryce Young is needed. Maybe
this time will allow him to take a step back
and absorb some of the stuff that he wasn't able
to as that starter, that main guy from day one.
Speaker 4 (13:21):
I mean, take a step back. We're in the pocket.
I mean, what is he What's he gonna do? Get
further away from the line. I don't think that he's
going to go in a game on Sunday. If Andy
Dalton goes down and he's gonna play any better, He's
going to be in the same same offense. I've always
said that the best teacher in this game is, you know,
(13:42):
standing on the sideline and watching and being an observer
and learning the game and seeing it from the sideline.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
But I don't think.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
That that that in this instance is going to help
Bryce seng O this football team. Wow, you just drafted
a quarterback Number one two years ago, and you are
in the position they are going to be in the
position of having a first pick in the NFL Draft.
You dress drafted a quarterback with a number one pick
two years ago, and you have the number one pick
(14:11):
staring you in the face, and come next April, what
do you do if you're the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 5 (14:17):
Yeah, you have to take a quarterback. If you have
to take one, whether it's Schador or whoever.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
Well, Carson Beck or Brought, whoever it may be, you
have to take a quarterback. You cannot bench this man
two years into his career, going to next season and
hoping and hoping that you're going to have a better outcome.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
I don't see that happening.
Speaker 5 (14:39):
There is one move, and it's not that I disagree
with the Dave Canalis move to Andy Dalton this week.
There is a move though that Dave canallis talked about
that they won't be making that I agree with. This
is what Canalis said about the possibility of dealing Bryce
Young this season.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
This was earlier this week. That's not something we're really considering.
Speaker 5 (14:56):
You know, we have a great situation with our quarterbacks
right now, with guys that have experienced. So we love
where we're at, and we're all all hands on deck.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
We're folks on playing the Raiders this week.
Speaker 5 (15:06):
Okay, so he said, yeah, I was gonna say, but
I love where we're at.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Is not truthful.
Speaker 5 (15:16):
I like to say he has more caps than lids
on that one plaques.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
That's my that's my line. But the point is, you
can't trade Bryce Young right now because his value is
at the absolute lowest.
Speaker 5 (15:30):
It would not get You couldn't get anything for Bryce
Young right now.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
Are going to them who exact exactly exactly.
Speaker 5 (15:37):
So so while he's saying they're not looking to deal them,
I wouldn't trade them either. Like there's at least if
you wait a month, maybe some people may forget what
they've seen in the first two weeks of the season.
Now is not the time to do so. I don't
think the Dolphins want to take on a reclamation product.
I don't know you project. I don't think that the
Rams are looking Jimmy Garoppolo is going to come off
of r These are just teams that have been talked
(15:59):
about as possible abilities.
Speaker 2 (16:01):
There's it doesn't even make sense to trade him right now.
Speaker 4 (16:05):
Man, the harsh reality of what Canal has just said.
You can't trade him. Nobody's going to uh trade for him.
So what are you going to look at? Colina pensis.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
You can't trade him, Where's he going to go?
Speaker 4 (16:19):
It's a project waiting to happen all over again at
the first pick, and they they're just they're just beating
themselves up and saying that, you know what, this might
be one of the worst trades in NFL history, from
the ninth pick to the first pick. QUI Bryce Young
and come this April NFL Draft, they are going to
(16:44):
be in a situation where they're going to have the
number one or number two pick and they're going to
have to take a quarterback. And what are you going
to do with Bryce Young moving forward? He's just going
to be a backup quarterback. I really believe for the
rest of his career. He's plexical Birds. I'm Dan Byer.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
It is up on Game And to make your final
point about that trade, it's been talked about this week,
but the Panthers still ode bears the second round pick
from the deal coming up in April. I know it's
absolutely nuts. It is up on Game livefrothetirek dot Com Studios.
I guess short quarterback seems to be the theme. That
seems to be the theme because there's a situation developing
(17:22):
in Pittsburgh where Russell Wilson just may not get his
job back. We'll discuss that. He's Plexico Burus. I'm Dan Byer.
This is up on Game on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
It's up on Game. He's Plexico Burrs.
Speaker 5 (17:45):
I'm Dan Byer in for LeVar Arrington and TJ. Huschman
Zada on this Saturday edition. Upset could be bringing in
Columbus at least early. Marshall's on the board. Brian Fenlan
eleven up Gold, Marshall coming up in just a little bit.
We'll dive more into college football and the rivalries and
(18:06):
whatnot in about twenty.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
Minutes or so.
Speaker 5 (18:09):
And to tease the story, as plex says go, Marshall,
Plexico Burros had some success on the field. That Marshall
had some success on the field about twenty six years ago.
That completely broke my heart. We'll talk about that in
twenty minutes or so. I got to get the inside story,
but that's for another time. We're gonna focus on these
(18:31):
short quarterbacks because it seems to be a theme.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
From Bryce Young to Russell Wilson.
Speaker 5 (18:36):
We go completely different story for what's happening in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
Now, the Steelers got some bad news today.
Speaker 5 (18:42):
Troy Fatano, their first round pick right tackle, goes down
with a knee injury and practice yesterday.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
Basically the third start of the Steelers.
Speaker 5 (18:50):
Have now lost on their offensive line this season, and
we're only two weeks in. We don't know how long
he's going to be out of action, but he will
not play tomorrow against the Chargers. That two to zer matchup,
justin fields is going to get the start. Mike Tomlin
always towing the line the right way and explaining on
how they're handling Russell Wilson's injury. But there is a
(19:11):
report from Jerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post cause atte
prior to even week two plaques that the Steelers were
planning to start Justin Fields in Denver and then also
in this game against the Chargers. So that begs the
question with another win on Sunday for Pittsburgh put Russell
Wilson further away from ever getting his starting job.
Speaker 4 (19:31):
You know what, I know Mike Tomlin very well, and
Mike Tomlin is a rhythm guy, especially at the quarterback position.
He is going to go with the team a quarterback
that has a continuity together at that time. And Justin
Fields has only thrown for two hundred and seventy three
(19:54):
yaws in two games and a touchdown, but he has
no turnovers. He's completing sixty nine percent of his passes.
But he's two and o and it's the first time
in his career from the first two games of the
season and that he's been over five hundred. So you
look at the situation. If he was only two with
two hundred and seventy three yards passing touchdown, Russell Wilson
(20:17):
will be starting this week, sure, But I always say
that it's easier to, you know, correct situations or issues
that you're have in with your team when you're winning,
but when you're losing and you have issues, you have
to find a way to get him corrected immediately. Maybe
(20:37):
the Steelers aren't playing their best football offensively, but when
you're winning games. That's what counts in his league. He's
two and oh and I believe that, you know, he's
gonna he's going to get better.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
He has a great young offense.
Speaker 4 (20:51):
I believe that George Pickens is one of the most
dynamic wide receivers in all of football that he doesn't
get credit for. And he plays in Pittsburgh and he
plays in a run our first offense. But I believe
for Justin Fields, if he goes out there this week
and he wins a third game, don't I don't think
Mike Tomlin is going to take Justin Fields off of
(21:12):
the football field and put Russell Wilson, you know, back
in the football game. Troyano, he's out. Justin Fields is
ten years younger. Maybe they miss a few blocks, and
Justin Fields as an athlete can use his legs, get
(21:33):
out of the pocket, make plays, you know, you know,
because he's so gifted as a quarterback. But I believe
that if he goes out and wins this game tomorrow,
offensive for the Pittsburgh steel is that unless Justin Fields
just goes out there and stinks it up, he is
going to be the starting quarterback for this football team.
(21:54):
If he continues to win. Listen, if Justin Fields can
go out and get the Pittsburgh Steelers twenty four twenty
seven points a game, I don't believe that that many
offenses in his league that are going to score twenty
four plus points on this Pittsburgh defense.
Speaker 5 (22:11):
Sure, sure, and then and heck was scoring down in
this league. I mean, it's gonna make it even difficult
for teams, especially if TJ.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
Watt and Cameron.
Speaker 5 (22:20):
Hayward and other guys are playing at top at the
top of their game. My question, though, is something that
you kind of you know, led the point with when
you're talking about Justin Fields. If they do start winning again,
this is a city that wants Super Bowls. I mean,
it's six berg right, this is this seventh seed, is
the wild card. Doesn't necessarily live up to the expectations
(22:44):
with the Steelers. So my question is on the Justin
Field side of things, at what point do you open
it up? Ran more against the Falcons than he needed
to against the Broncos.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
Only had eight carries in that Broncos game.
Speaker 5 (22:57):
But again, this is a team that had six field
goals in the first game, scored just thirteen points a
week aldgo against Denver. At some point, you do have
to score a little bit more than the eighteen and thirteen.
As you're saying, if you put twenty four up, do
you expand Justin Field's passing game? Do you expand him
in the running game? If he is your guy, how
do you get to that twenty four point level?
Speaker 4 (23:19):
I believe he's going to get better. I mean, I mean,
I really do. I mean it's only been two games
into the NFL season. Not a lot of reps in
the preseason with this new style of coaching that that
these coaches have because a lot of guys aren't playing
in the preseason, so it's still young. I really believe
that that Justin Phield is going to be better in
(23:40):
this offense. They're going to have to open it up
and they will. But you know what, just win, baby,
That's what Al Davis say say. If you win ugly,
the check goes in the left hand call him instead
of the right hand column.
Speaker 2 (23:53):
And that's all they care about in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 4 (23:56):
Are we considering, you know, the Pittsburgh still is to
be a super Walklintendo whatnot. But just go out and
win football games. Don't lose a game, if you justin
fields manage it, you know, don't turn the football over
and you know, let's just defense, go out there and
get stops and hold team to under twenty one points.
Speaker 5 (24:19):
Do you think it's sustainable? Do you think this way?
I mean is man? Guess you are. It's the AFC North.
I mean, that's just how it is. It's a low.
Speaker 4 (24:29):
Scoring division when when they play divisional games, if you
look at these games that they're you know, twenty to thirteen.
I mean, this is the best defensive conference in the football.
So you're going to have to find a way to
grid it out and be physical in the run game.
In the AFC North, I would say the only team
(24:51):
in the AFC North that depends on passing to win
football games in Cincinnati Bengals. Other than that, everybody else
is a run first offense.
Speaker 5 (25:02):
I I just think they're gonna need a little bit more,
and you.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
Know, they'll get it. They'll get it. They'll find it.
Speaker 5 (25:09):
It's got and it's got to either be from Justin
Field's legs or Justin Field's arm. And I have more
confidence in his legs. But then what does that do
to the George Pickens of the world who's maybe not getting.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
The football as much they did. They did show some good.
Speaker 5 (25:25):
Chemistry in their game against the Falcons, so I shouldn't
necessarily say that, but Pickings had to make a couple
of all world catches, uh.
Speaker 4 (25:32):
Right, in those he does he does every Sunday. Yeah,
I mean, you know, Justin Fields is still young. In
his offense. He's two and oh. He hasn't turned the
football all over and when he was in Chicago, that's
what he was known for, throwing in exceptions, fumbling the football,
giving it away to the other team. And he's not
doing that. When you're two and oh. You could, if
(25:55):
you're the office coordinated, you can look at the schedule,
you know, prepare for these d fences and put him
in situations where he can be successful. And that is
exactly what Mike tom is going to do. He's not
going to, you know, be outside of the box, drop
back and throw the ball forty to forty five times
with Justin Fields because he's not that kind of quarterback.
(26:17):
They are going to play into the strengths of what
Justin Fields does well and long as they keep winning,
it doesn't even matter.
Speaker 5 (26:25):
I want to run my theory by you, because I
think it's a legitimate theory. It's not just something that
I cooked up and said, I'll just throw this and
see if it sticks against the wall. Let's see the
Pittsburgh Post Gazette report from Jerry Dulac was prior to
week two, they said Fields is going to start week
two in week three. I don't in week three. This
week tomorrow is their home opener. I think from what
(26:50):
they did in week one with Fields winning in Atlanta,
that they didn't want to put Russell Wilson in a scenario,
even if he was healthy plaques to make his debut
in the home opener and throw a stinker up against
the Chargers, and I think.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
It bought them more time.
Speaker 5 (27:07):
Where now, if you win in Denver, which they did,
then they were two and oh, now you can ride
that momentum at three and oh. But if they were
to say we're gonna take this week by week and
Russ is healthy this week and was able to play
against the Chargers and he doesn't perform well, I think
you've lost Russell Wilson for the entire season.
Speaker 4 (27:28):
I don't think that situation at all. I mean, I
really don't, you know, you think that.
Speaker 2 (27:32):
I believely say that Russell Wilson.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
If Russell Wilson was healthy, he would have been the
day one start, because I would believe that Mike Tomlan
came out and said, basically said that Russell Wilson was
going to be a start, but he wasn't healthy, and
so the injury provided Justin Feels an opportunity. And listen,
nobody expected him to go down to the land and
(27:55):
win a football game, and nobody expected him to go
on a demo and win that football football game that
they did.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
But I believe that they were owing.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
To that that Russell Wilson, if he's not one hundred percent,
that he would be.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
The starter this weekend.
Speaker 4 (28:11):
But it's just it just so happens that the injury
afforded Justin Fields's opportunity and he's making the best of
it because those were two football games that I.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
Didn't think they were going to win.
Speaker 4 (28:22):
I gotta be honest with you, And now in two
and oh going going into week three, and if he
goes in and to the home opener tomorrow and he
wins that football game, Mike Tomlin is not going to
break up this offense. He's not going to insert Russell
Wilson in week four after three and zero. If Russell
(28:42):
Wilson is one hundred percent, Mike Tomlin is not going
to do that.
Speaker 5 (28:46):
But and and that, and that's that was my theory
actually of going into week three is if you go
to because they had won in Atlanta, I actually thought
they were going to beat the Broncas. I just there's
no way they were going to lose the Bonecks. You know,
even though it was a thirteen to six rock fight
sort of game. There was no way that they were
going to lose that game. And I think this allowed
(29:06):
that cushion to give Tomlin a bit of space to
be like, okay, this reports out there now. Tomlin didn't
say he was going to start for two weeks. But
to your point is now it allows Fields to keep
rolling and they can do whatever they need to do
with Russell Wilson. I actually think Russell Wilson needs to
go into ato a scenario, and it may not be
(29:26):
Pittsburgh nowt Plax, but he needs to go in and
save the day somewhere else. He can't go in with
expectations to do something if he's going to resurrect or
have any more juice in his career. And he's not
in his mid thirties, so who knows on how many
years he still has in his career.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
But he's going to have to come in and be.
Speaker 5 (29:45):
The guy to maybe save a dour situation or sour
situation instead of being the guy that you actually put
hope in. Because it didn't work in Denver and right
now there's nothing to show for it in Pittsburgh. Maybe
he can go save the day in Carolina.
Speaker 4 (29:59):
Yeah, man, he can't go down there and say today,
because that's getting ready to turn into the Titanic down
in Carolina.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
But I'm just looking at Russell Wilson's situation.
Speaker 4 (30:11):
I mean, he's ten years older than Justin Fields, and
I can almost guarantee you that Mike Tomlin and this
organization they bought Russell Wilson in to be the starter. Yeah,
and it didn't happen, and Justin Fields was basically an
(30:32):
insurance program if Russell Wilson wasn't healthy or if he
didn't go out and play well. But it's a three
sixty of what they wanted to happen at the quarterback position.
And I know Mike Tomlin and his team man in
this locker room. I know the feel Justin Fields is happy.
(30:53):
He's won two games and now down for the first
time in his career, he's able to gather some confidence.
And it's a It's a crazy thing what confidence can
do to a young player at if you haven't had
it at this level. And now he's starting to believe
that he is a starting quarterback in this league.
Speaker 2 (31:15):
And I believe he's going to win again tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (31:18):
He's Plexico bursts. I'm Dan Byer, this is up on games.
I'm sitting in for LaVar Arrington and t J. Hushman Jadaz.
We are live from the tirec dot Com studios. Let's
go to the news desk. Brian Finley gonna give us
an update Plax on what is happening on a busy
day in college football?
Speaker 2 (31:34):
Happy Saturday, Brian, how are you?
Speaker 6 (31:35):
Yeah? Likewise to you Plaux and Dan and Dan your hopes.
I know you've got those Wisconsin roots, so potentially in
Ohio State upset Special. Early on you pourted that out well,
your hopes of them and Marshall leading and maybe winning.
Speaker 7 (31:49):
That sort of simmered and died down.
Speaker 6 (31:51):
Pretty quickly as after Marshall scored the first touchdown. You
can watch this game Marshall versus number three Ohio State
and Fox Television with about six minutes to go. Now
in the first quarter, it was Will Howard throwing a
sixty eight yard screen pass for a score two plays
forty two seconds. This after the Marshall thundering herd had
a thirteen play seventy five yard drive took over seven
(32:12):
make it almost seven minutes. Ethan Payne on a third
and goal one yard out. He did score. That was
the first score of the game, but Ohio staid quickly responding.
Twenty first rank Clemson against dense State. That's another game
that we are witnessing and watching right now. It is
twenty one to nothing Tigers as they have overcome that
early season opener blip and put up some big numbers
(32:34):
since Kate Klubnick, the Tigers quarterback fifty five yard touchdown
run along with two touchdowns through the ara thirty one
yarder and a two yarder, so he is dealing. Also
in the world of college football, we do have James
Madison in North Carolina. They are battling it out here
and James Madison scoring the first eleven points of this game,
(32:56):
but North Carolina has responded with two touchdowns. They're up
fourteen to eleven late in the fourth quarter. Also, Maryland
as a seventeen to nothing lead against the Villanova They
just wrapped up the first quarter in to start the
second quarter.
Speaker 7 (33:08):
Indiana ten, Charlotte six.
Speaker 6 (33:10):
As we're looking at that first window of college football games.
Speaker 7 (33:14):
That are playing out in front of us.
Speaker 6 (33:15):
And lastly, guys, in the world of college football, Utah
quarterback Cam Rising reportedly viewed as a game time decision
today against Oklahoma. That is a battle of two teams
inside the top twenty in the nation, and there's an
injury to his strong hands and so they're not going
to make a determination. Plaque and Dan until game time
to see what he can do. But as I worked
(33:37):
the microphone back to you, this is a Cam Rising
that I feel like Dan has been a quarterback since
the day I was born.
Speaker 7 (33:44):
I think this is year.
Speaker 6 (33:45):
Seven for him, and I think he does have another
year if he wants to come back.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
H yeah, it is year seven, It absolutely is. He
has been there forever. I think he's played in like
three different conferences for Utah. You know, it's been he's
been there that long.
Speaker 5 (33:58):
It's been it's it's tricky to even say Utah on
the Big twelve now, But a big Big twelve showdown
with Oklahoma State coming up. Game you'll see on Fox
four o'clock Easter time later today. Thanks Brian, appreciate it.
He is Plexico Buris. I'm Dan Byer. This is up
on Game Plexic Plaxic. Plax and I can't agree on
one thing. We both hate Michigan. The similarities start to
(34:24):
veer after that. We'll discuss next. He's Paxico Buris. I'm
Dan Byer. This is up on Game on Fox Sports Radio.
It's up on Game on Saturday, September twenty first, He's
Plexico Burris. I'm Dan Byer in for LaVar Arrington and TJ.
Hushman Zada. Also a Big Day, Plax because it's our
technical producer Chris Purfett's birthday. Happy Birthday, Chris perfects alright,
(34:50):
it's not only the twenty first of September where you're
gonna hear Earthwood and Fire all day, but Chris's birthday today.
Sharing it with the likes of Bill Murray, Alfonso Robero,
Liam Gallagher, Stephen King, Jason Derulo. Yeah, the list goes
on and on. Put Chris Purfett in that role, Call if.
Speaker 7 (35:09):
You will and I get the Earth Winding Fire song.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (35:12):
Absolutely can't ask for anything better.
Speaker 5 (35:14):
Oh Man, good stuff. Glad to be with you guys today.
Speaker 2 (35:17):
Plaques.
Speaker 5 (35:18):
I know you don't know a ton about me, but
I'll fill you in this way. I've been an Ohio
State football fan since I was about seven or eight
years old, okay, mid nineteen eighties, all the way through,
and things weren't necessarily great. And I have always said,
people will say, what's your worst loss in your career,
It's got to be.
Speaker 2 (35:35):
A Michigan loss, just like you.
Speaker 5 (35:37):
I hate the Michigan Wolverines with everything in my all
fibers of my being. But the loss that actually stings
the most wasn't a close loss to Michigan and nineteen
ninety six or any of the games that we've had
in the in the ninetiars or maybe the past three
years that Ohio States had. It was in nineteen ninety
eight when your Michigan State spartans you, Nick Saban, went
(36:01):
to Columbus rallied from I think you scored eighteen unanswered
something like that, some crazy number and go and beat
the buck Eyes twenty eight, twenty four and what I
thought was Ohio State's best team. I'll still argue that
they made their best team since I've been a fan,
but that upset is one that I still think about
(36:22):
to this day. How your Spartans went into the shoe
with knocked off the buck Eyes. What do you remember
from that November afternoon twenty six years ago.
Speaker 4 (36:30):
What a beautiful day, What a beautiful day for Spartan lands.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
I remember getting back.
Speaker 4 (36:36):
To the airport and all the fans were at the
airport and we went into this game. You know, nobody
expected us to go and go and the win. And
Julian Peterson started his first game, I think out of
junior college.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
That game, he had one of those games.
Speaker 4 (36:55):
It was like four sacks, strip fumble or covered from me,
two batted balls. In the era of Julian Peterson was created.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
And they had the number one secondary in the country.
Speaker 4 (37:11):
They had Gary Barry Moore, they had Antoine Winfield.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
So we went into this game. I went into the
game taking it very personal.
Speaker 4 (37:19):
I was saying to myself, listen, I know that Antoine
Winfield is one of the most physical gifted corners en
college football.
Speaker 2 (37:27):
But I just thought he was too small for me.
Speaker 4 (37:29):
And in the first quarter of that game, I believe
I had four catches for like one hundred and four
yards in a first quarter. Right, I said, well, they
got a problem because Antonine Winfle can't cover me. And
then so they started doubling and we got the ground
game going with Cedric Irving. He scores in the fourth
quarter and we was getting stops and rinaldo' hill sealed
(37:54):
it with that interception. I believe on David Boston a
great defense, great car by Nick Saban.
Speaker 2 (38:00):
What a day. Yeah, joj remain through the interception. He
was looking for d Miller.
Speaker 5 (38:03):
That's actually who it was. I still remember it to
this day. Fourth and ten from the fifteen. I'm glad
we could be friends now, but that day we weren't.
And you got the best of the buck eyes. He's
Plexico Burrus. I'm dan byer Eli Manning a Hall of Famer.
But when plus college football, that's next
