Speaker 1 (00:01):
Do're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Well, that's right, you heard the man. It is that
time of week. My name is Bernie Frattle. We are
coming to you live from the tyrac dot com studios
here in Las Vegas. Fox Sports Radio. Tyrac dot com

free road, azerd protection, and over ten thousand recommended installers.
Tyrat dot com the way tire buying should be. When
(00:26):
it comes to college football Saturday night, it's like, where
do we begin. Well, I think there's going to be
a recurring theme because the stories right themselves. There will
be two schools we have to talk about every week.
Sometimes it'll be a short conversation, sometimes it'll be a
lengthier conversation. But those schools are Colorado and Michigan. And
(00:47):
for you history busts, it's almost thirty years of the day.
I was at the game in ann Arbor when when
Cordell Stewart threw this ball about seventy yards in the
year it was caught by Michael Westbrook coincidentally's from Detroit
or ironically from Detroit, play high school football in Detroit,
and they beat the number four ranked Michigan Wolverines.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
That day.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
In the last second heroic play sound familier. All right,
let's talk about Colorado for just a second, because regardless
of what the record ends up being this year, and
I'm gonna just say it, they're not one of the
nation's better teams. And I will be shocked, beyond shocked
if somehow they're in the college football playoff. However, for
(01:32):
one reason or another, and you know what the reasons are,
you cannot ignore the Colorado Buffaloes, just a couple hours
ago offered the latest example of their electric presence and aura.
And they're finished against Baylor that once again leaves you
scratching your head. The Buffs trailing by seven and the
dying seconds. Shador Sanders somehow avoids a pass rush through
(01:56):
an absolute dart forty three hours down the field, unfortunately
hit Will Sheppard in the jersey and he dropped it.
He laid on the ground and the prostrate prostrate. And
I will say this, I looked at the clock. Oh oh,
there's still two seconds left. All right, I'm not turning
this off because you learn to expect the unexpected. And yes,
I you serious. Another forty three yard hail Mary. This
(02:20):
time found it's target, but that just got the buff
to overtime. The Buffs score first in overtime, and then,
oh yeah, you can't script it any better. Travis Hunter
forces a fumble on the goal line to secure an
improbable win for Coach Prime and the Buffaloes, who now
go to three and one. Three and one. We're gonna
(02:42):
be talking about Colorado all year. I don't know where
the hell this sends up. Darnath's thing I've ever seen.
I know people want Dave I Rand to fire. That
tells me a lot of people. But a Baylor I can't.
Colorado will get none of my money. But I won't
fade a eater. I mean, I know you're tired of
hearing me say it. You can script everything. Sports are
(03:03):
the greatest reality show. You can script everything, but the ending.
Before I get to Michigan, I want to give some
props to Tennessee. Why is no one talking about Tennessee.
Everybody's talking about Georgia justifiably, so, Alabama, Texas justifiably so.
Everybody's already. It's almost like we've got this Joe Lunardi
bracketology every week, whether you want it, or not. Tennessee
welcomed Oklahoma to the SEC Saturday, and it was a
(03:28):
very rude welcome. The balls. They were aggressive. They stifled Oklahoma.
Jackson Arnold, guy you've heard a lot about it as
a highly tied quarterback, ended up getting benched. Tennessee lived
in Oklahoma's backfield from the jump. They forced Arnold into
three turnovers. They made Brenton venables, bringing a freshman who
(03:51):
I'd never heard of, Michael Hawkins. Hawkins ended up moving
the ball better than Arnold, and maybe Oklahoma fans who've
been used to having very good offenses over the years,
might you know, light their fire for a bit of
a time. But the twenty five to fifteen final score
line doesn't really tell the full story all right, because
the Sooners got a light touch down which tightened up
(04:12):
the margin. But the final numbers Tennessee's defense eleven tackles
for lost, three sacks, four quarterback hurries. Obviously, Oklahoma's offensive
line struggled. The Sooner defense did a little bit better
in slowing up the Volunteers attack, but they still put
up twenty five points. If you don't think Tennessee could
(04:33):
in theory win the championship. Think again, not predicting it,
but that's how good the SEC is. That's how good
Tennessee is. And props to Josh Hipel who made his
bones at Oklahoma. I believe he finished second in the
Heisman Trophy voting and a team the year the Sooners
won the national championship, left Oklahoma unceremoniously. Now head coach
(04:54):
at Tennessee. You know he had to love winning in
Oklahoma day Tennessee, getting the win and the way he
won the game. Let's get to the Michigan Wolverines. Damna
thing I've ever seen. You can't make this stuff up.
The last when you throw for thirty two yards, you're
passing numbers for the day. Are thirty two yards? Do
(05:14):
you expect to win that game? Interestingly enough, it's happened
three times now, three years in a row. Maybe he
didn't throw for a single yard two years ago and
they beat us UC at Central Florida. Last year, Army
threw for a wap in forty yards and somehow beat
Air Force. Those are the Navy. Look, those are the
Air Force. The military academies. Michigan through for thirty two
(05:38):
yards against USC and one if you look closely, though,
Michigan has their identity. All you got to do is
look back to nineteen seventy three and page bull Sham Beckler.
They're gonna run the ball. They're gonna run the ball.
They're gonna run the ball, and then they're gonna run
the ball some more, and they're gonna play defense and
stop you. They're in a punt play ball field position.
(06:00):
They're gonna run the ball every now and then they'll
really spice it up. You know, they'll fake right and
go left, or they'll fake right and go left. Really
dazzling stuff, really dazzling stuff. I feel like I'm watching
Molarry and Curly back in nineteen forty in the Three
Stuges football film. But it worked. It worked. Maybe Michigan
no longer has a midlife crisis. All right, alex Orgie
(06:24):
started at quarterback. That's what the fans wanted, That's what
the fans got. And I think you have to use
the term quarterback loosely. I was told alex Orgie was
a dual threat. He runs, kind of good runner. I
think he's a leader. You hear this young man talk.
He's brilliant. He's really articulate and well grounded. He's He's
(06:46):
a Michigan man. Trust me, I covered that program a
long time, but they don't really revolve their offense around Orgy. Again.
They told me he was a dual threat. What's the
second threat? He's kind of a runner. His Kalel Mullings
and the offensive line, they were brilliant that final driver.
(07:07):
Are you kidding? You? Take over at your own eleven
yard line, You're down four points with four minutes to play,
and you know they can't pass. They got a run.
But just when everybody's telling us, I'm not going to
mention any names, Colin Coward that this is finally the
year USC. I mean, Lincoln Riley, he could run for
(07:29):
president and win. He can be pope, he can do anything.
You can't make this stuff up. Michigan gets a quick
first down, Khalel Mullings breaks a sixty three yard epic run.
He broke multiple tackles, and boy, you knew that was
the USC you've known to come and hate the last
few years. You know they had Ronnie A. Lott and
Marcus Salen on the sidelines today. Let me tell you something.
(07:53):
I remember when USC was USC. That defense was an
NFL defense. Can you please dial up some defense? He
had this game one, but that run by Kalel Mullings
that all of a sudden set the Wolverines up inside
the twenty just like that, and that drive and essentially
the game ended seven plays later after yes, the aforementioned
(08:16):
Kalel Mullings dove into the end zone seven seconds left
on a fourth and goal. Make one stop that would
have made up for the sin of that sixty three
yard run. Michigan rand the ball six times inside the
seventeen yard line. They gained yardage every single time. How
in the hell this is possibly going to be sustainable?
(08:37):
I don't know, but don't tell that to their head
coached Sharon Moore, when he was told, you know, you
realize you just beat USC with thirty two passing yards.
Here's a quote. I love it. It's my dream. Sure
you dreamed about passing for thirty two yards only. And
Miller Moss is a real deal. He did throw the
one pick six. Give it up to Will Johnson. You
(08:57):
talk about a slabar knocker game. Those guys were getting
after hoh baby. But let's talk about the flip side
of the coin. It turns out that USC's habits they're
gonna die hard now. Lincoln Riley's first two seasons of USC,
no one can argue with me on this. They featured
some of the nation's worst defensive units. But then they
(09:20):
bring in D'Anton, Lennar's defensive coordinator. He paid immediate dividends
at least in their first two games against LSU and whoever.
And for most of the day, SE's defense was serviceable, serviceable,
and they tackle in space better. But when it mattered most,
when the heat was hot, it was hard to breathe
(09:41):
at the end of the game, those high leverage plays
in those final moments, USC's old bad habits reappeared at
the worst possible time. Gonna if you're a USC fan,
you have to have nightmares about that monster sixty three
yard run. He broke at least four tackles that I
could count, and that got the Wolverines inside the road zone.
(10:01):
And when that happened, I said, they're gonna finish his
game off. They're just gonna steamroll USC. USC knows it.
They're looking at each other. We can't stop these guys.
If that sixty three yard run doesn't happen. Well, I
think USC wins it again. If you're ahead, coolone, she'd
be your uncle. So the more things change, the more
(10:22):
they stay the same. Michigan's gonna run, USC's not gonna tack.
This guy was Dragon defenders. You can see the highlights.
Watch it, right, Mullings just would not be denied on
the fourth and goal from the one that spoils USC's
first game. Oh yet it was a big ten game.
How many times are they gonna mention that? Tato? It's
a conference game? Okay, we know, we know. Now. There
(10:42):
are plenty of positives to take from USC's debut in
their new conference. Miller Monks is the real deal, looked
very good in his first true road start, but the
defense failing to rise the occasion at the biggest moment. Well,
I don't know if USC is a playoff team. If
you've got into my head right now, No, they're not.
A couple of other notes. You know, Clemson got their
(11:04):
butt handed to him against Georgia, but ever since then,
they've been scoring points right and left. Kate club Nick
all of a sudden's become an offensive juggernaut. After looking
lost in that opening blowout lost against the Bulldogs. Meanwhile,
give it up to Utah, first row game in the
Big Twelve, No problem. You know Cam Rising, what is
his thirteenth year at Utah, couldn't play, no problem. They
(11:25):
bringing an eighteen year old. He looked pretty sharp. Ohio State,
they're running rough shot. They had to Michigan State next week.
But they've got a freakish group of wide receivers, they've
got running backs, they've got a defense. On paper, I
think Ohio State might be the best team in the country.
So there's your college football update Colorado. Wow, can you
(11:48):
make this stuff up? No? You can, but you don't
need to because it's there. Michigan, same deal. Welcome to
college football twenty twenty four. We are all here for it.
The storylines, they're not going away. We're just getting started.
Speaking of storylines, we got a ton of them as
we welcome in a phenomenal Week three NFL Slate and
(12:10):

slate of Sunday games NFL Week three. Get your pens
and pencils ready. Your box will drink through a fire
hose of football cornucopia. Knowledge. Yep, it's time the Physic five.
(12:51):
It's the Physic five. These are the five things you
need to.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
Hear about, not with the only back to back Hilton
Super Contest winner Steve Zig Here's Bernie Frado.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Well veez good evening, and let's start here. I think
one of the smartest things a better can do is
fire on a game before Sunday rulls around. We both
know where you're going with this. Go ahead, take it away.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
So I'm looking ahead to next week, Week four, and
my favorite bet on the card Bernie is to play
Green Bay hosting Minnesota. I'm not one hundred percent confident,
but I'm confident that Love will be back for that game.
So stop worrying about whether he's going to be back
this week, very very very unlikely. Let's play Green Bay
(13:42):
Week four, laying mines two and a half and over
forty two and a half two bets Week four that's
available at DraftKings.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
And taking your advice much earlier in the week. I
fired on Detroit and Philadelphia and we'll get to those
later before we dive into this slate. We want to
get to all of them. Not a lot of teaser.
I mean, we know people love teasers. Very limited options
this week. Explain to the folks.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
Why yeah, So.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
When you tease and you have to play a six
point teaser minus one twenty, many places in Vegas, all
the places in Vegas charge more.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
Than minus one twenty.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
So teasers are done, though you don't want to play
them in Vegas. They'll take them, but they're sucker bets.
But places like DraftKings still have the good odds. I
like the chargers and the teaser. You've got that plus
two and a half updated and a half through the
key numbers of three through seven. You always want to
capture the stree numbers and you can pair it. Actually,
I really like this. The Bengals are laying seven and
a half at almost all the books. Monday Night, Bernie
(14:37):
at DraftKings, I got my seven lay Mius fifteen. Well
the minus fifteen doesn't even matter. It's the seven that's
all the matters.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
And the teaser.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
So you can tease the Bengals from miss seven down
to minus one. So the Chargers Bengals teaser would be
my favorite.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Of the week. And I want to remind Peo, but well,
you just said go three through seven both ways. Someone
asked me last week, Hey, what do you think about
teasing Dallas at seven down to a pick? I said,
don't do it. You might get away with it, but
don't do it. And look what happened When you break
the rules, you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.
This is all about trying to win money or le
stove into some of the games. Sunday Fays, I want
(15:12):
to start with the Ravens who visit Dallas. Cowboys a
short favorite. They've actually been a check that they're a
short dog. They've actually been a home dog five times
in the last five seasons, but they're four and one
in that situation as a home dog in the last
five seasons. I don't particularly like them on Sunday. Your thoughts.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
Yeah, I'm glad you brought up the teaser idea because
when this line was pick them and you're right, Bernie,
all the money's coming in on Baltimore. Baltimore's now pretty
much minus one across the board. But I think tomorrow
Baltimore could go up to minus one and a half. Well,
big deal, minus one versus minus one and a half.
Very unlikely to land on one, but you know what,
rather likely to more much more likely to land on three, four, six,
(15:56):
or seven. So if Baltimore wins a close game, wait
for this line go up to one half and then
you can get you some Dallas cowboy teasers from one.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
And a half up to seven and a half.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
All right, do you have a thought on that game?
A lot of people I trust think Baltimore wins.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
You know what, I am like the most boring guest
you'll ever have, And this is important because I'm a
sports betting guest. Here's what's wrong with the national media.
Everyone else is paid to have opinions, crazy, wild, outlandish takes,
and the truth, Bernie, is that almost all these lines
are really close to being correct, especially not necessarily on
(16:33):
Sunday night when there's a week before the games. But
by Saturday night, when you've only got, like you said,
eleven hours before game time, these lines have been so
picked over it is extremely rare you're going to get
a number that is off by any material amount.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Couldn't agree more people up marvel at how close the
numbers end up being. But look, there's so much data.
That's been a mass here in Las Vegas. There's only
what fifteen games every week? And we'll just leave it there,
all right, move on. The Saints have gone bananas ninety
(17:07):
one points the first two weeks, but they find themselves
also as a short home dog. They've covered the first
two games by whopping thirty two points. Are you buying
the Saints because I'm not full disclosure. I bet Philadelphia
earlier in the week, but I got them plus three
your thoughts?
Speaker 4 (17:24):
Yeah, and they're back to plus three.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
So this is a fascinating game because I just talked
about how the market is efficient, Well, what makes the
market inefficients whenever you have really big outliers. So to
start the season, the Saints were supposed to win seven
and a half games. That was their season win number.
The Eagles were supposed to win ten point seventy five,
meaning anywhere from ten and a half to eleven. They
(17:46):
were not even in the same category. The Eagles were way,
way better than the Saints, and that's why in the
summer line, the Saints, as you mentioned, were a home
dog catching three points. Well, Bernie, now they're laying three points.
So you can go right after you hang up with
the on your show at three in the morning. They're
open all night. You can drive over to the South
Point and bet the Philadelphia Eagles plus three minus one
(18:07):
ten and that would indeed be my best bet on
the board this week.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
I got him plus three earlier in the week. And
you know I had lunch with crack Man on Tuesday.
We talked about this game. I believe the send off
line before the season started was Saints minus two. When
you get a five point move like that, okay, we
got we gotta grab it the Rams. The beat up
Rams played the beat up forty nine ers, Rams catching
seven at home, another home dog forty nine Ers now
(18:32):
seventeen to nine. He gets the number of versus Division
folls the last five seasons. Not going to touch this game,
but believe it or not. I would only look to
the Niners that I'm not touching the game your thoughts.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
So, lots of injuries for the Niners offense, obviously, Debo
is the most important to all. The stats say that
when he is out, the yards per play on the
offense really suffer. With all the cluster injuries on the line.
For the Rams, they do get one guy back from suspension,
and both are wide receivers injured as well. Both offenses
compromised and injured. I know that the emphasis is going
(19:06):
to be trying not to get anyone else hurt. Don't
run a hurry up. I played under you can still
get a forty four if you shot running up at
our friends at the win at forty four, But even
at forty three and a half, I could only look under.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
No Cooper cup either who's staff are going to throw
the ball to other than the other team? A couple
of times?
Speaker 3 (19:25):
That's possible, but exactly And you know what, You've got
two really really good coaches, and I think both coaches
understand shortened.
Speaker 4 (19:34):
Again, this is an example.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
If a team that's the ball at the end of
the first half on their own twenty five with sixty
seconds left, they're going to hand it off.
Speaker 4 (19:41):
They're not even going to try to score.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
It's an excellent point. That's an excellent point. All right.
The Kansas City Chiefs are two and er. But if
you listen to the group think echo chamber, you think
they're you know, somebody's vastard child Land three and a
half at Atlanta again, another home dog. Kansas City only
seventeen and twenty, though against some number as a road
(20:03):
favorite the last six seasons. Yes, you do pay a
chief tax when you bet them your thoughts, so.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
People can and do when betting the NFL. And it's
really not that complicated. But you know, it's complicated winning
on Sunday because the Lions and we just talked about
how tight they are. So this was an example of
the game. I think the Falcons plus three and a
half were a solid fifty five percent wager. Now that
think about how good that is. That's you're gonna be
(20:29):
living on a golf course if you can make a
bunch of fifty five percent bets. But guess what, they're
not getting three and a half anymore. Now they're getting
plus three. So now you were going fifty five and
forty five Bernie, if you bet this one hundred times,
you're styling.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
Guess what ten of those wins have become pushes.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
Now you're forty five, forty five and ten at paying
the big no, thank you at three. If it goes
back to three and a half, bet the Falcons game,
I'm not going.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
To be involved in, nor will I be involved in
this next game. Green Bay visits Tennessee. Tennessee is your
two point favorite. Tennessee is owing too, But they actually
won the stats battle in both of their games. But
I'm always concerned with the name that rhymes with Will Levis.
Speaker 4 (21:12):
Your thoughts, Yeah, so Levis has cost him both games.
You're spot on.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
The Titans have won in the stats both games. I
gave my clients throw in the week the Titans, I
believe money line minus one, thirty five and minus two.
It's up to minus three because Love isn't going to
play and they just activated Clifford as a to be
eligible as a backup quarterback. I think here, here's one
thing you might want to do with this game, is
(21:36):
as soon as Love gets reported out and he's not
going to play, all right, The square balls that haven't
been following this all week long.
Speaker 4 (21:43):
Are going to be like, oh my god, Love is out.
Bet the Titans and it could go all the way
up to three and a half. I make the game three.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
So I like the Titans minus two. Hey, you give
me the Packers plus three and a half. I probably
could play something back at that price.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Yeah, I think again, another game I'm not involved in that.
You see better opportunity on the board, faz Hang right there.
We got a lot of stuff to get to include
some including some closing thoughts. For first, let's go to
our guy Steve di Seger with the latest.
Speaker 5 (22:11):
Good evening to you.
Speaker 6 (22:12):
Let's start with the college football as Number six Tennessee
was a winner at Oklahoma twenty five fifteen. Valls led
twenty two to three in the fourth quarter. Sooners as
a team thirty four carries thirty six yards rushing, including
three sacks two fumbles. Number seven Missouri and double overtime
got a home win against Vanderbilt thirty to twenty seven.
Vandy missed a thirty one yard field goal attempt at
(22:33):
the end. Miszoo was three of six on field goals
but won the game. Vanderbilt had lost at Georgia State
the previous week nearly got the upset here. As for
the other top ten game involving top ten teams, Number
one Texas one easily same for number three Ohio State,
number five Old miss Ah rank Miami was down at
(22:54):
South Florida fifteen fourteen just before halftime, but it was
Miami fifty to fifteen. The final and tenth rank Penn
State beat Kent State fifty six nothing. Kent State as
a team two of thirteen passing eighteen yards and rushing
is a team thirty carries under fifty yards Kent State
and getting shut out six first downs, ten punts. Penn
(23:16):
State had forty first downs. Michigan beat USC twenty seven
to twenty four on a touchdown run in the final minute.
By the way, Michigan State was in action tonight at
Boston College and BC scored late to win against the
Spartans twenty three to nineteen. Washington played its Big ten
opener at home, beating Northwestern twenty four to five. Iowa
(23:36):
had seven points in the first app but wound up
winning thirty one fourteen at Minnesota. And There's Friday Night
Football Now on Fox TV. There was a Friday night
overtime game in the Big Ten, with Illinois winning at Nebraska.
There were four late games in college football. Tonight, BYU
comes back for a thirty eight nine victory over thirteenth
rank Kansas State, which had three turnovers. BYU was down
(23:58):
six to nothing late in the first half of this one.
Liberty had a very late night in Virginia but came
back to win over East Carolina thirty five twenty four.
Speaker 7 (24:06):
There was a weather delay earlier.
Speaker 6 (24:08):
Boise stayed at home beat winless Portland State fifty six fourteen.
Boise with a possible first round NFL running back Ashton
genty on eleven carries. He had one hundred and twenty
seven yards tonight, and Hawaii has scored late third quarter
and now leads Northern Iowa in the late game twenty
nine to seven. They're into the fourth. And also we
(24:28):
had an upset today with Buffalo winning in overtime at
number twenty three Northern Illinois twenty three to twenty. Buffalo
had trailed fourteen to three early in the third quarter.
They have a linebacker Sean Dulac, who had nineteen tackles
and an interception today. At the upset, he'd had sixteen
tackles at Missouri, and the game on Fox TV tonight
had Colorado winning in overtime against Baylor thirty eight thirty
(24:49):
one after tying the game on the Hail Mary pass
at the end of regulation. NASCAR win at Bristol for
Kyle Larson Baseball a battle week left in the season.
San Diego won Dodgers law so LA's lead in the
NL West is down to three games over the Padres.
Sho heey Otani did have stolen base number fifty three.
Starting on Tuesday, Padres at Dodgers, Mets and Braves each one.
(25:11):
Braves still two games out of the last NL wildcard spot.
Starting on Tuesday, Mets at Braves, Yankees won easily. Baltimore
lost in ten innings. Yankees first in the AL East,
five games now ahead of Baltimore. Starting on Tuesday, Baltimore
at the Yankees and finally to the NFL forty nine Ers,
tight end George Kittle out Sunday with a hamstring injury
(25:33):
and Texan's running back Joe Mixon out with an ankle injury.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Back to you, mister de Segar, ever so quickly, it's
my understanding. James Madison beat North Carolina seventy to fifty.
Do you know if anybody filed out in that game?
Speaker 6 (25:47):
James Madison had fifty three points in the first half,
so that's better than most college basketball games. They got
a touchdown on a block pun so on an interception
return about a seventy yard pass. I was waiting for
them to not just score. We always hear the expression.
Speaker 7 (26:01):
Half a hundred.
Speaker 5 (26:01):
They got that in the first half.
Speaker 6 (26:03):
I was expecting one hundred eight me or seventy to
fifty final over the tar heels.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
Great fun for the whole family. All right, good stuff, Steve,
Thanks Bud, and we go back to the physic five.
Get your pens and pencils ready. We're going to keep
drinking through that fire hose. We move on to America's team,
the Bears. They're not really America's team, but I just
thought I would say that they visit the Indianapolis Colts.
So here's what's interesting about the Bears, Fez or the
(26:30):
inverse proportion of the Tennessee Titans. They lost the stats
battle in both of their games. What do you expect
when they visit Indianapolis later on today?
Speaker 3 (26:39):
A really close game and whatever game's close outlined round pick.
We talked about Baltimore Dallas, Baltimore becoming the favorite. Now
I'm getting interested in teasing Dallas one APF up to
seven and a half.
Speaker 4 (26:50):
Same thing.
Speaker 3 (26:50):
I'm getting interested in teasing the Bears from one alf
up to seven and a half. Listen, no deforce Buckner.
The Colts couldn't stop the Packers running even though they
knew it is coming on every play. That's not a
team that I want to invest in as a favorite.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
Yeah, you and me both all right? Moving on, Jacksonville
will visit Buffalo, Buffalo laying five Buffalo eight and two
straight up and against the spread in September games in
their last ten thoughts on that game.
Speaker 4 (27:20):
You know, I was going to.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
Play on Jacksonville, but I'm looking back on it. That
Bill's six point win against Arizona. That's starting to age
a little bit more nicely to me. I was concerned
about the Bills, but then when Arizona played a perfect
game against the Rams, I'm thinking, you know what, maybe
the Bills are actually pretty darn good.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
I'm going to pass.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
Yeah, I'm not. I'm not one hundred percent sure why
so much professional money's coming on Jacksonville. Do you want
to take a second to address that or no.
Speaker 3 (27:48):
You know, it's not like we have a bunch of
union where we all get together and you know in
the what's smoking cigars and hash this all out.
Speaker 4 (27:56):
There's disagreements. I don't agree with the Jacksonville.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
Money, Okay, anough, I'm I'm just reporting what I see
all right here in Las Vegas, the Raiders make their
home opener. I'll be there tomorrow, tom credential for the game.
They're laying five. You know, people make fun of Andy Dalton,
a guy's throwing for fifty thousand yards in his career. Fez,
I'm not going to touch this game at the ten
foot pole, but it feels like it would be so
on brand for the Raiders to stroll into Baltimore. Win
(28:22):
outright is nine and a half point Dogs come home
and lay a stinky one against Carolina.
Speaker 3 (28:27):
Your thoughts, Okay, So the Raiders are supposed to win
seven and a half games this year, that's their updated
season win number they have won, So that's supposed to
win six and a half more.
Speaker 4 (28:36):
Carolina is supposed to win three and.
Speaker 3 (28:38):
A half, So the Raiders are supposed to win twice
as many games, and like you said, they're only laying
five and a half points, So this line was seven
and a half for the adjustment the upgrade, and it's
a proper upgrade for Dalton.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
But do you really want to take a road dog which.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
Isn't going to have a bunch of fans which normally
when we play in Las Vegas, Bernie, you know, like
Pittsburgh takes over to stadium.
Speaker 4 (28:59):
That can to be the case with Carolina.
Speaker 3 (29:01):
If they're only going to win three games the rest
of the year, that seems like a pretty slim margin
to only be catching five and a half.
Speaker 8 (29:07):
I pass.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
Yeah, I'm not going to touch the game, but it
doesn't sound to me like you're in a hurry to
lay the wood.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
So anyway, because you nailed at the spot's terrible. The
Raiders are still celebrating at the win after they won
in Baltimore.
Speaker 2 (29:22):
All Right, this is a game if you decide to
watch it, really got to hold your nose. The New
York Giants visit Cleveland, Cleveland thing six and a half.
Cleveland has a quarterback that's a shot fighter, and I
think that if the New York Giants were a fight
they would have already stopped it. This honestly feels like
a double digit win for Cleveland. Their twelveth ranked defense
(29:44):
is rounding into shape. They're much better at home the Giants.
Their defense ranks twenty seventh. That and you know alone
would keep me off the Giants. But it's the NFL.
There's something about this game strikes me your thought.
Speaker 4 (30:00):
You know, this is a very popular game.
Speaker 3 (30:02):
I don't have the splits, but I know a lot
of people took the Browns and Survivor and Bernie I
got one survivor left. They used the Bengals. I'm supposed
to use the Browns if you map out the whole season.
But you know what I said to myself, I just
can't let Watson take out my last sole survivor. I
can't trust the quarterback for the Browns.
Speaker 1 (30:21):
Right.
Speaker 2 (30:21):
A quarterback I do trust, and I think he's worthy
of that is Baker Mayfield. The Tampa Bay Bucks are home.
They visit a very mediocre, moribund Denver Broncos team. The
Broncos are catching six and a half. Denver's been horrible
(30:42):
on third down. They've been horrible in the red zone offensively. Meanwhile, listen,
I think Tampa Bay is for real and that defensive
front seven is for real. They proved against Detroit last week.
Why is so much money coming in on Denver in
this game?
Speaker 3 (30:55):
Because you nail that. Denver's been horrible their first two games.
Guess what covered one of those games against the other
one they lost by six. You can be pretty bad
and cover catching six. Oh yes, that's the problem with
these numbers. Looking no further, like with the Detroit against Tampa.
(31:15):
Detroit put up almost five hundred yards against Tampa. Now
do they not cover the six and a half?
Speaker 4 (31:20):
They lost outright?
Speaker 9 (31:21):
You know?
Speaker 3 (31:21):
And they were laying seven and a half. So if
you turn the ball over a couple of times, you're
not going to cover a six and a half line.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
I pass, Okay, You're not wrong. And when the ball
is in the air, you want to be on the
side of the book, And I think the books might
need Denver. It doesn't matter to me. Here's where I'm
going with that. I have to see something. Bo Nix
is not appeared to be a major league quarterback at
this point. The Lions, I get last week they had
(31:48):
a stinker because they got into the red zone. That
couldn't do anything. I liked Campa Bay last week for
a bunch of reasons I won't bore you with. And
so your point is taken a any given week in
the NFL. But Denver hasn't shown me to be an
NFL team yet. So it's just a game I'm going
to stay away from, all right. A very interesting game
in Minnesota. Both teams are deserving of early accolades. Vikings
(32:10):
catching two points at home, another home dog, Minnesota two
and oh straight up and against the number of their
first two games has Houston as well as they've done,
Fez the last couple of years. Have they earned the
right to be a road favorite in this spot like this.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
I think so, but I certainly not by any sort
of margin. So I think the line is correct. And
once again we're back to that that plus two, Bernie.
You know I love plus two and plus one and
a half because we've been talking about it all both
these segments. If the long teaser through the three, four, six, seven,
which he's Minnesota up from plus two to plus eight,
another good teasable game.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
Here's the anomally. The Texans are two and oh straight up.
They've won the stats battle by an average of plus
one hundred and ten net yards both games. You get
their zero and two against the number to start this season.
It's just a red flag for me.
Speaker 3 (33:01):
That happens when you're up nine and you have the
ball first and goal on the three and you fumble
with three minutes to play.
Speaker 2 (33:07):
Hey, hashtag, so you want to be a gambler? All right?
The Chargers visit the Steelers, Steelers laying a short number. Steelers, Yes,
our favorite. I'll share with you with stat says that
knocked me over when I was doing research this week.
Do you know what Mike Tomlin's tenure as a home favorite?
(33:27):
He's fifty nine and fifty nine against the spread. Now
you pick the winner in this game, and you're going
to cover. I don't want any decide your thoughts.
Speaker 3 (33:34):
Total at thirty five really low total makes the points
all that more valuable now.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
The West Coast team when they go east and.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
They stay out East all week long, which the Chargers
are doing, staying in Carolina for the week. The Niners
have done this for years and they've always had great success.
I loved the Kumba Yah early in the year. Extended
training camp weeks two and three here, So I like
the charger teaser from two and up to eight and
a half.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
Even though Justin Herbert is a non non factor, he'll
be a factor if he'll just be limping around, he
won't be one hundred percent.
Speaker 3 (34:08):
But that's why, that's why the lines plus two and
a half instead of pay.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
I don't think anybody ever went broke fade and Justin Field,
so we'll just leave that there. Talking about unders Seattle
Home laying four and a half against the Miami Dolphins,
both teams two and over the under already and you
got a nice juicy total of forty one and a half.
I would look to the under in that game, haven't
fired on any eight your thoughts.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
I like that under shop run can get a forty
two on this Listen, whenever you've got a backup quarterback
coming in, the natural reaction is the offense gets simplified.
Speaker 4 (34:41):
They run the ball more, but the defense plays harder.
The whole falling star idea.
Speaker 3 (34:46):
In the NBA, if your best star is out, everyone
else picks it up and plays better defense and gets
more rebounds.
Speaker 4 (34:52):
Same thing in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
I like your under last game on the docket that says,
not gonna liance my best bet. I love Detroit in
the wood, Dan Campbell six and oh straight up against
the number on the road Following back to back home games,
Arizona only won and seven against the spread, and back
to back home games when they've won the previous week.
You said it earlier. Detroit had four earned sixty three
yards of offense last week, stunk in the red zone,
(35:15):
lightning won't strike twice. I think it's a git right
game for the Lions. Your thoughts Now, I.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
Could be biased because I watched the whole Arizona Rams
game and Murray looked like he is the second coming
of Doug Flutie in this prime. So given that Bernie,
you and I are going to go ahead to head,
I'm gonna be on the other side, and winner is
going to buy dinner. Please say Tuscany girl.
Speaker 2 (35:36):
Sounds good. You let me off easy. If I lose
a lot, I'm making the line minus three. That's the
line I got of at Do you good? Yeah, I'll
give you a field goal, Fez. Look forward to seeing
you suon and Palell good job, enjoy your Sunday.
Speaker 4 (35:48):
Thank you for having me on. Bernie, You're the best.
Speaker 2 (35:50):

If you can forgive Aaron Rodgers for his Thursday night
football sideline second quarter taster's choice moment with head coach
(37:19):
Robert Sala. You know, the classic act like you've been
there before, act like you're going back. Sala was kind
of exuberant, kind of relieved. Rogers is usual, loading the
short self. And I don't care what he said after.
I don't believe anything he said or why he acted
the way he acted. What happened there, you know, it
(37:39):
was not the typical warm and fuzzy Jonah Hill, bring
it on in for a hug, anything but that. But
I will say this, Let's kid, the man is due.
Aaron Rodgers might have pushed you on his coach a
little bit, but he also pushed around the New England Patriots.
He picked them apart surgically twenty seven to thirty five
to eighty one and two touchdowns. But moreover, past the
(38:00):
eye test, I'm telling you, the dude turned the clock
back fifteen years. He looked mobile, he looked quick, he
looked fast. You don't believe me. He was five for
five on throws on the run. He was six for
six on throws outside the pocket. He was mobile, he
was accurate, he looked, he looked the part. And I
gotta tell you what did he do? He gave the
(38:22):
New York Jets faithful a taste of what they've been
yearning for. Along those lines, Rogers even got good pass
protection from his offensive line, which is another very encouraging sign.
Another encouraging sign for Jets fans. Rogers to Garrett Wilson's
going to be a problem for any defense. Yes, five
catches for thirty three yards, those aren't groundbreaking numbers, but
(38:43):
if you look at how much of a headache they're
going to be for opposing defenses, I will tell you
Garrett Wilson is not just a playmaker. He's going to
be an excellent possession receiver too. But it's not just
Garrett Wilson. I said off the cuff. A couple of
weeks ago, it didn't look like the Jets had an
embarrassment of riches on offense, but maybe that's not true.
(39:04):
Rogers spread the wealth to eight different receivers Thursday Night,
including Tyler Conklin led the way five receptions, ninety three yards.
And so in addition to Garrett Wilson and Alan Lazard,
you got Braylan Allen, you got Bryce Hall, you got
what might be a very high powered offense from the
Jets this season. And don't tell me it was just
against New England. They're an NFL team, So okay, it's
(39:28):
one game. But look, Hope Springs Eternal. The Jets are
two and one. Don't tell me it wouldn't be a
great story to see the Jets go deep into the postseason.
Whether you like him or hate him, I think it
would be a great story, and I'm kind of here
for it. Rogers, you get your props Thursday Night, coming up,
Mark Mandina, Medina Magic, Keep it locked. You listened to
the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah, that's right,
(39:52):

(40:37):

wait to react to the headlines. We make the headlines right.
Speaker 8 (40:42):
Mark, Yes, sir, It's never a dull moment. And even
when the season's off, we shall display and talk about.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
I got to ask you, how in the world did
this rumor, nasty goofy Kawhi Leonard rumor start and tell
the folks what it was and got kiboshed.
Speaker 8 (41:00):
You're talking about the skateboarding incident.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
Well, if that's in fact what it was, quite honestly,
I can't lie to Yeah, but somebody said brace yourself,
there's bad news about Kawhi Leonard, you know, and some
sort of injury, and then it caught wildfire among the
group think Echo Chambers.
Speaker 8 (41:18):
Yeah, I guess there was an account in China that's
that try to post something on Kawhi Leonard from Kawhi
Leonard's agency saying there might be some bad news about
his health. And you know how misinformation spreads pretty quickly
before that. But then there was some other kind of
like tongue in cheek videos I saw on X where
(41:40):
it looked like he was witnessing some people's skateboarding that
he decided to participate. I don't think I need to
confirm this. I think it's in players contract clauses that
you can't do that in our off season.
Speaker 2 (41:55):
Sure, no, you're exactly right. Ever, so quickly though, Leonard
did have some knee inflammation during the Team USA camp
that was a little eye opening. So he didn't play
in the final league games of the regular season. And
you know, I'm sure his needs feeling good. Now is
he ready to go?
Speaker 8 (42:12):
Well, we'll obviously wait and see. I mean the Clippers,
you know, for what it's worth said that they thought
Kawhi Leonard could have played with Team USA for the
Paris Olympics and they were disappointed on his behalf. Now
this is only my opinion because Lawrence Sprink stayed his
opinion publicly. I think it was kind of one of
those things that they wanted Team USA to be the
(42:34):
bad guy so they could wrap their arms around him.
And they're probably privately relieved that he didn't play because
that means it's just one less risk that he might
enter next season not fully healthy. Now that being said,
Lawrence Sprink did say during Summer League, there is a
lot of optimism and confidence that he's going to be
(42:55):
fully healthy because again from their public stance, they thought
he was healthy enough to go out with the Olympics.
So I would expect in training camp he won't be limited.
Speaker 1 (43:05):
You know.
Speaker 8 (43:05):
I think that that has been something that Tylo has
really tried to implement about making sure the guys are
getting practice and scrimmaging. But we know Kawhi leonards injury history.
Once the regular season games actually start, all bets are
off as far as how many games he plays, and
you know how many injuries there are that happens.
Speaker 2 (43:27):
With US, So I guess we'll know in nine days.
I believe the Clippers open up their training camp in
Hawaii October first, if I have that right.
Speaker 8 (43:36):
Yeah, October first in Hawaii, but don't have their media
day at the Intuit Dome in LA so it'll be
a fun little, uh, you know, introduction to their new arena.
Speaker 2 (43:46):
Yep, all right, So whenever I see news like this,
it certainly raises an eyebrow. AJ Griffin, a young man
sixteenth overall pick just a couple of years ago out
of Duke, has decided to hang him up already, and
he's already been bought up on the US in rockets.
Is there a backstory here I'm missing?
Speaker 8 (44:03):
Well, yeah, he reached terms on a buyout with Houston.
Speaker 10 (44:07):
You know, he.
Speaker 8 (44:09):
Hasn't really performed all that well. I mean, he has
been a pretty average player so far. So I think,
you know, I don't know anything about AJ Griffin's personal
life or anything, but when it comes to, you know,
his NBA and basketball career, I think it's about you know,
weighing what options are there, you know, overseas or with
(44:29):
a better fit. But here's the reality of the unfortunate
reality is young players aren't really given time to develop,
and you know, you're either considered a player that is
either instant impact or has a lot of potential, and
if you don't have the potential, teams bail on you
because they feel like, hey, they can draft the next
(44:52):
young prospect. So this is kind of a testament to
how short lived an NBA career can actually be.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
I not have couched that in the proper context. It
was my understanding that AJ Griffin approached the team and
said he wanted to step away from the game. Maybe
you can clarify that. But to your point, you bring
up an excellent point. However, Mark, I must say, because
I believe AJ Griffin averaged around seven eight points a game.
He'd only been in the league, maybe eighty ninety games.
(45:21):
If Bronnie James averages eight points a game, he'll be
in the Hall of Fame by next year.
Speaker 8 (45:26):
He'll get his jersey retired along with that.
Speaker 2 (45:28):
True look at you what nicely done? Nicely played, goo.
Speaker 8 (45:32):
Ahead, And you know what, while we're at it, maybe
let's just induct him into the next month's All Fame.
Speaker 2 (45:37):
Right, why not? Hey? Real quickly, it was reported I
don't know this gentleman, but I have to give him
credit for reporting if he's right. Somebody named Zach Lowe
from ESPN reported that he believes that Brownie will be
on the opening night roster and will play in the
opening night game with Lebron so they can have their
(45:58):
moment right away. Is it true?
Speaker 8 (46:01):
Well, I think it very well could happen now. I
think everything can change, but I want to be surprised
if that happens now. I think there's a difference between
playing opening night versus playing significant minutes. I think that
this moment is more going to happen in preseason because
those games are inconsequential. But I think that he will
(46:22):
have the moment regular season opener because it's really cool.
But I don't think that's a preview that Bronnie James
is now a rotation player, you know, seventh eight player
off the bench, playing significant minutes. I think it's about
spending most of that time in the G League and
getting kind of those feel good moments out of the
(46:43):
way with his dad early in the season.
Speaker 2 (46:45):
Okay, I'm in agreement with you, But the way the
report I read was that this individualist Gentleman was intimating
that Brownie would in fact be on the opening night
roster for the regular season and playing that game. Now,
I didn't say it would be significant minutes. I think
it'll just be in the game. Maybe they step on
the floor, they play a minute or two, and that's shit,
and they've made their history. So when I heard that
(47:08):
opening Night, that's kind of a boss move. That's something, well,
it is, But we have to keep.
Speaker 8 (47:14):
In mind a few things here. G League training camps
don't start until late October October twenty eighth, I believe,
and then you know they have to finalize their rosters
for November seventh. So when you look at the calendar here,
you know the NBA opening day is going to be
(47:35):
late October, and so there is almost that weak gap
where those G League players could be on the actual
regular season roster. And so I think that's what's going
to happen with Brownie. But once the G League's started up,
that's where he's going to go.
Speaker 2 (47:50):
Fair enough. Talk with Mark Mendina Medina Magic every Saturday
night here on The Bernie Fridle Show at midnight twelve
midnight Pacific. One of the conversations blowing in the breeze.
Just this past week among the powers to be my
understanding was the subject of expansion. We all know Seattle's
(48:11):
bandied about. We all know Las Vegas is bandied about.
I even heard somebody through the name Mexico City in there.
Could you ever envision a team? First of all, did
you hear anything of the sort? Could you ever envision
an NBA team in Mexico City?
Speaker 8 (48:24):
Yeah, definitely, I've heard it. IAmA Silver's talent at Mexico City,
and I think that that's very realistic. I mean, we
look at Toronto, They're obviously not in the United States.
Is in Canada. That's a major metropolitan city. Mexico City is,
you know, one of the largest cities in the world.
And when you're looking at it geographically, even though it's
(48:45):
outside of the US, from a travel standpoint, it's a
short flight from the Texas city is like Dallas, Houston,
et cetera. So I don't think that it would create
that much of a travel issue. Number one number too,
you know, basketball is growing more and more, and I
(49:06):
think one of the underrated markets is in Latin America.
A lot of people talk about, you know, the growth
in Canada, the growth in Europe because of all those
European powerhouses, but Latin America likes its hoops too, And
I think because of a geography standpoint again that obviously
Mexico is right next to the US. It certainly makes sense.
(49:28):
You had in the fact the population of Mexico City,
and you know, Mexico City is a very industrial, westernized
kind of city, so I think it would be a
perfect fit, and they have the facilities for it, and I.
Speaker 2 (49:40):
Believe it is the most populous city in North America.
So it's a big, a big market, all right. As
we wrap things up, there were a lot of key
players mark last year that whose seasons were cut short
due to injury, and I want to touch upon a couple.
What can you tell us about Julius Randall is dis
looking right shoulder. The reason I bring it up is
(50:02):
because I think the Knicks are a team to really
watch When him, Jalen Brunson, and ogn Andobi are on
the floor together, they were like twelve and one and
I'll score their opponents by like two hundred points. I
got to believe a healthy Julius Randall really helps the Knicks.
Speaker 8 (50:15):
Yeah, I mean he had surgery this offseason. The next
day he's fully recovered. I think he's going to have
a bounce back here. I think the Knicks are a
team to be reckoned with. I think in the short
term they do have to address, you know, the fact
that Isaiah harden steinms with the thunder Now he's a
really good rebounder, really good screen setter, and you know,
Mitchell Robinson's had some injury, so because of that, they
(50:37):
don't have a go to five. I know that Tom
Thibodeau has flowed out there that Julius Randall could play
the five, but he's also caution that those would be
limited minutes because he's not a traditional five. He's more
of a four. He's, you know, the modern day point
forward because of his playmaking style and his versatile skill set.
(50:57):
But I think that they gives the Knicks at least
option is because they have so much wing depth and
back court depth, especially now that they got Michal Bridges
in off season trades. I think in the spirit of
maximizing their roster with basically the Villanova group and Julius Randall,
he could see him play five, but it's good to
(51:17):
mostly before. But I am bullish on his health, and
I am bullish on the Knix's place in the Eastern Conference.
I still would give the edge, you know, to Boston
and to Philadelphia and Milwaukee, but you know there are
question marks about whether continuity is enough for Milwaukee and
the next they have that in their favor, So you
know what, on second thought, I put the Knicks a third.
Speaker 2 (51:40):
Yeah. I think they're going to be a real going
concern if they can stay healthy. Another name I'm going
to invoke here that really dropped out of site after
he also suffered a shoulder injury back last January. Only
played nine games all year last year, Joahn Morant. But
he's cleared to play. I'm sure Memphis is welcome. I'm
welcoming him back with open arms.
Speaker 8 (52:02):
Yeah. I mean he's expected to be fully healthy. And
you look at the Western Conference landscape here, I mean
they're going to disrupt it. I mean they finished with
the third worst record in the West only because Sean
Moran was out. He is automatically thrusting them into a
playoff team. I think so much that they won't have
to get through the play in tournament. They'll be at
(52:24):
least a sixth seed. But when you're looking at the
Thunder or in the Western Conference, really the Thunder and
the Nuggets I think are the only guaranteed teams to
finish at the top. You know, Minnesota and Dallas are intriguing,
but there's a lot of question marks about whether you know,
Minnesota can bring themselves to that next level. Dallas they've
shown that Luca Doctor, Jan Kyrie, Irving, ken Co exists well,
(52:46):
Quit Thompson great addition, but can they be an elite
defensive team? And then after those two teams, it's all
open the air. I mean, I guess theoretically he can
make a case for Clippers, Sons, Lakers, Pelicans, Kings, Warriors,
but it's all interchangeable. There's a lot of injury questions
on all those teams, in depth questions that I would
(53:07):
rate the Grizzlies ahead of all of them.
Speaker 2 (53:10):
I'm glad you mentioned deep Pelicans and what I think
is going to be a very crowded West last one
for me, Fortunately for Zion Williamson by far his healthiest season.
I think he played seventy games last year, did have
the hamstring injury, but it's my understanding he's leading team workouts.
He was in August working out with the team. What
(53:31):
can you expect? What can we expect that as Ion
Wimson's upcoming seam well.
Speaker 4 (53:34):
In fairness is Ion.
Speaker 8 (53:36):
When I talked to people with the Pelicans in the
last few seasons, they rave about his work ethic, attitude
and his hunger to get better. So they say that
that's never been a question. But it's just the reality
that even if he's doing the right, things are least
relative to compared to earlier in his career when he
was out of shape and wasn't the most astute dieter.
(53:58):
He hasn't proven that he can stay consistently healthy, And
when you're looking at the rest of the Pelicans roster,
there's a lot of questions. Entering training camp, they were
trying to see if there's a trade market for Brandon
Ingram because they're trying to mitigate the luxury tax concerns
and the second Apron and they weren't able to find
a trade partner. Now, Brandon Ingram's in the final year
(54:19):
of his contract. Theoretically, you know he can report to
the team and still play, but you know they have
also some needs to address their center spot. Because Jonas
Valentunis went to the Wizards this summer, so you know,
I'd keep my eye on. Maybe there's a potential deal
with the Pelicans dealing Ingram to Cleveland in a package
(54:41):
with Shared Allen, but that remains to be seen. So ironically,
Zion for the first time probably ever, represents the least
amount of question marks that the Pelicans have entering training camp.
But that doesn't mean he's not going to be a
question mark because of his injury history.
Speaker 2 (54:58):
And I think that's shared ever questioned his desire, But
in this sport that requires running and jumping, stopping and
starting eighty two nights a year and hard floors, there's
just not a great mix with somebody weighs two hundred
and eighty pounds or more. Yeah, and ever since he
got that flat tire duke a few years ago, remember
that that's you. That sort of was a precursor to
(55:19):
what the future was. So hopefully, I mean, he's a
great player to watch him. I gotta tell you, Mark,
I think the West is really crowded. We'll get into
that in upcoming weeks. As to who you think might.
Speaker 8 (55:30):
Emerge, yeah, I mean it's just going to be a
wow while West this upcoming season. I guess it always is.
But when you add in what you were mentioning about
Memphis with John Moran coming back and just you know,
some teams keeping most of their core, it's it's going
to be quite a turbulent season for the Western Conference
and it's going to be a really tough go for
(55:51):
any team to emerge at the top.
Speaker 2 (55:53):
Well said, I think it's going to be it's going
to be wide open, maybe even the East as well.
No one repeats anymore, do they, So.
Speaker 8 (56:00):
I guess you never know. I think Boston can repeat
because even though it's hard to defend a championship, they
have most of their quarterback everyone's healthy except for Forzingis.
But they've shown that they don't necessarily need Porzingis to
be as absolute best because he is a third option
or even fourth option behind Drew Holliday.
Speaker 2 (56:17):
Right, he was on my list, but I left him
out for that very reason. All right, great stuff, Mark,
We'll catch you next Saturday night, Buddy. I appreciate you, man,
Mark Medina Medina Magic. We covered the NBA fifty two
weeks out of the year because we covered all here
on the Bernie Frado Show coming up. There was a
recent fan based poll in terms of who is the
(56:39):
most optimistic fan base in the NFL and who's the
least optimistic fan base in the NFL. And I waited
to share this because the poll was done about forty
five days ago. And I promise you the least optimistic
fan base is going to surprise you based on what
the first two weeks have looked like. By the way,

Frattles Show, Fox Sports Radio. We are comedy live at
(57:42):
the Tarrat dot Com Studios here in Las Vegas, just
nine hours and thirty four minutes away from another jam
packed NFL Sunday, and hope springs eternal with fan bases,
and the anticipation begins in earnest for the NFL, usually
around April with the draft, and then you've got OTAs
in mini camps, and before you know it, the season
(58:04):
is here, and the season is here. And a publication
recently engaged fan bases in terms of how optimistic they
were or pessimistic and hopes how their team might perform
in this upcoming twenty twenty fourth season. So which city
(58:26):
rated first in terms of being optimism optimistic? This doesn't
surprise me at all, and this number is incredible. The
city was ninety eight point eight percent optimistic about their team.
I'm talking about the great city of Detroit and the
Detroit Lions. That city ranked first overall in terms of
(58:48):
the overall optimism. Their fan base had rated number one
before the beginning of the season. Now, obviously, let's let's
pretend we're having this conversation back in early August. Plenty
of love for the Lions, most people think they should
have won the NFC title last year. The front office
went back to work. They maintained their core. They retained
(59:10):
Ben Johnson, their offensive coordinator. That was a big coup,
maybe the biggest one of the offseason, and they kept
their defensive coordinator. You get the drill all right now,
we don't know if if the Lions will live up
to the hype, and the hype is deserving, but their
(59:33):
fans were certainly optimistic and they ranked first. Let's put
a team in the middle. They call it the mech right,
the Arizona Cardinals. Their fans actually had seventy percent optimism,
but they only ranked twentieth. This is a perfect example.
If you go back to august In, fans preceding their
team could go one or two ways. They were right
(59:54):
on the fence, no question. They have talent Kyler Murray
and he appears very healthy. High hopes for Marvin Harrison Junior.
And the team actually played a little better than expected
last year, but they're likely way behind a lot of
teams in the NFC, and even the optimists, the optimistic
fans have them going maybe nine to eight. They may
(01:00:15):
be better. Coincidentally, the Rams or checked at the Arizona
Cardinals host the Lions here in a few hours, so
the Lions fan base was first. An optimism rated first.
The Arizona Cardinals fan base was ranked twentieth. Who was last,
(01:00:38):
Wait for it, they ranked thirty second. Only sixteen percent
of their fan base was optimistic this team would do anything.
The New Orleans Saints now again, pretend now they are
two and oh. They've been two and oh before, and
Derek Carr's been to and over before with the Raiders.
But you'd rather be two and oh than than oh
and two. And we're going to get to some of
(01:00:59):
that later in the show about the significance of that.
It's real. But if you go back to August, first,
every reason for pessimism was fairly warranted. They're an expensive team,
they're an old team. They can still do this. They
could be, you know, in for a mediocre year. But
(01:01:20):
they had some you know, fans, sixty percent, you can
call them delusion. Well maybe they're fans, some of them.
One of the reasons they gave is they thought Derek
Carr could rebound become a top fifteen quarterback because they
now have a new offensive scheme, a new offensive coordinator,
and people believe that's all New Orleans needed to do
to fix that to make a surprise playoff appearance. Another
(01:01:42):
they believe the defense was good enough to pick up
the rest, all right, And although you know the eighty
four percents that just wait, we'll see Spencer Rattler sooner
rather than later. But now the season started, and that's
the beauty, right. We've talked about a thousand times. You
can script everything, but the you know, but the inning
(01:02:03):
in the world of sports, and the beauty of it
is is that now that the season is underway and
you've got situations where some teams are two and oh,
some teams are rowing to some teams are looking good
doing it, others not. Now you can start to compare
whether or not the optimism, the optimism or pessimism was warranted.
(01:02:24):
And we're gonna do a little bit of that coming up,
because coming up we call this NFL contenders or Pretenders.
We're gonna break down the two and O teams and
the OW and two teams and give you our thoughts.
But first go back to our guy, Steve Disager with
the last.
Speaker 6 (01:02:40):
Let's start with Top ten. College football is number one
Texas was a fifty one to three winner over Louisiana Monroe,
which had eight punts and only seven first downs tonight
and allowed seven touchdowns Arch Manning two td passes, two interceptions.
Number three Ohio State over Marshall forty nine fourteen as
The Buckets had four touchdowns of at least forty yards,
including an eighty six yard run by quin Shawn Judkins.
(01:03:02):
He on fourteen carries had one hundred and seventy three
yards rushing in two scores. Fifth ranked Old miss dominated
Georgia Southern tonight, fifty two to thirteen. Georgia Southern as
a team thirty six carries, thirty seven yards rushing Jackson Dart,
four touchdown passes and one pick. Number six Tennessee led
at Oklahoma twenty two to three in the fourth quarter
(01:03:23):
and beat the Sooners twenty five to fifteen. Vanderbilt missed
a thirty one yard field goal attempt at the end
of the second overtime to lose thirty to twenty seven.
At seventh rank Missouri, Miszoo finished three of six on
field goals and that was good enough for the home victory.
Number eight Miami trailed at South Florida just before halftime
fifteen fourteen. Hurricanes won the game fifty to fifteen. Tenth
(01:03:45):
rank Penn State shut out Kent State fifty six nothing.
Nitney Lyons with over seven hundred yards of offense winless.
Kent State had sixty seven yards of offense. Top twenty
matchup at Michigan went to the Wolverines over USC twenty
seven to twenty four on a touchdown run in the
final minute. Miller Moss of sc three touchdown passes but
one pick six and won fumble as well. He was
(01:04:06):
sacked four times. Top fifteen matchup at Oklahoma State went
to the Utah Utes. They held on twenty two nineteen.
Utah had led twenty two to three with under six
minutes left utes in time of possession, had a stark
advantage forty two minutes out of the sixty. BYU is
at home tonight, trailing thirteenth rank Kansas State six to nothing.
Late first half BYU won the game thirty eight to nine.
(01:04:29):
Case State with three turnovers. At sixteenth ranked LSU, the
Tigers were tied with UCLA and the third quarter seventeen
all thirty four to seventeen LSU. The final in fact,
the Tigers defense had five sacks. At seventeenth ranked Notre Dame,
the Irish trailed Miami of Ohio three to nothing late
first half, beat the winless visitors twenty eight three quarterback
(01:04:50):
Riley Leonard three total touchdowns. Next week, Louisville at Notre
Dame nineteenth rank Louisville thirty one to nineteen winners against
Georgia Tech, as the Cardinals scored touchdowns on a fumble
reck and a block field goal return. Number twenty Iowa
State fifty two to seven winners over Arkansas State, which
had four turnovers. Twenty first ranked Clemson led NC State
(01:05:10):
Today fifty two to seven in the third quarter fifty
nine to thirty five the final Buffalo pulled off the
upset in overtime at number twenty three Northern Illinois twenty
three twenty as Northern Illinois missed a thirty nine yard
field goal in the first half and missed a thirty
seven yarder in overtime, so Buffalo, on its thirteen drives,
only had nine first downs and still won the game.
(01:05:33):
Twenty fifth ranked Texas A and M A winner twenty
six twenty against Bowling Green James Madison won at North
Carolina seventy to fifty. JMU quarterback Alonzo Barnett seven total touchdowns.
Colorado in the game on Fox TV Saturday night, won
in overtime against Baylor thirty eight thirty one after tying
the game on a hail Mary pass at the end
of regulation. Packers quarterback Jordan Love, according to NFL media,
(01:05:56):
not expected to play Sunday due to his sprained mcl
Jackson tight end Evan Ingram out this weekend with a
bad hamstring tight end to the forty nine Ers George
Kittle is out hamstring injury, and Sunday Houston Texans running
back Joe Mixon is out with an ankle injury. To
Major League Baseball, just over a week left in the
regular season, Mets and Braves each one Saturday. The Braves
(01:06:18):
still two games out of the last NL wildcard spot,
and starting on Tuesday, it's Mets at Braves in a series.
Arizona won its fourth game in a row. Kansas City
got shut out at home nine to nothing by San
Francisco that clinched the AL Central title for the Guardians
of Cleveland. Casey's lost sixth straight Minnesota was reigned out
at Boston. They'll play doubleheader on Sunday. Twins are only
(01:06:39):
a half game up on Detroit for the final AL
playoff spot. Mariners now just a game and a half behind.
Seattle got to win Houston as well. Detroit won in
ten innings at Baltimore six 'y four, so the Orioles
are now five games back in the first place Yankees
in the AL East, Yanks were ten nothing winners at Oakland.
Aaron Judge is fifty fourth, Homer Padres won, Dodgers lost
(01:07:00):
first place LA and the NL West just three games
over the Pods, and the NASCAR win at Bristol. To
Kyle Larson back to you, all right, thanks Steve.
Speaker 2 (01:07:09):
So you know, the great Yogi Bear at once said
the soon as you fall behind, the more time you
have to catch up. That's not necessarily a good strategy
when it comes to the National Football League. You're a
lot better off starting out two and oh oh and two.
How do we know this, Well, let's take a look.
(01:07:31):
How important is it for an NFL team to get
off to a hot start and avoid a cold beginning
because the numbers lie historically, check that the numbers don't lie. Historically,
when it comes to making the playoffs, if you go
back to the NFL merger in nineteen seventy, four hundred
and eleven teams started out two and oh. Two hundred
and sixty three made the playoffs. That's sixty four percent.
(01:07:51):
You like those odds. Just last year, eight teams started
out two and oh, and six of those teams man
it to the postseason. Two years ago, there were only
five teams that started out too and oh, but all
five made the playoffs. And oh yeah, by the way,
the Chiefs were in both groups. They became the thirty
third and thirty fourth two to oh team in fifty
(01:08:12):
eight tries to win the Super Bowl. Fifty nine percent
chance if you fifty nine percent better chance to win
the Super Bowl if you start out two and oh.
Now the stats are far more staggering for teams that
start out oh to two. This is troubling. Also, since
nineteen seventy there were four hundred and thirteen NFL teams
(01:08:33):
who lost their first two games of this season. Only
nine percent of those made the playoffs forty of them
ninety one percent didn't. Last season, the Texans who actually
won the AFC South, they were in a normally there
were eight teams that started out oh to two. The
Texans were the only team to make the playoffs last year,
(01:08:55):
starting on two the year before. The Cincinnati Bengals in
twenty twenty two, the only team of the five who
are owing to so two of the thirteen teams in
the last two years. So let's take a look at this.
Let's drill down a little bit. Who are the two
and zero teams the Chargers? Now, the Chargers played two
teams they should have beaten. They got the Raiders at
(01:09:16):
home and the Carolina Panthers on the road. But it's
not just that the Chargers are winning, it's the way
they're doing it. Jim Harbaugh, Greg Roman, Jesse Minterter. Harbaugh
has already established a culture of mentally and physically tough teams.
The mindset is ten times better than it was under
Brandon Staley. His leadership has been clearly absorbed. The Chargers
(01:09:38):
put away both opponents, and those were not close tough games.
Those are easy wins right out of the gate. Greg
Roman's offense has already rushed for almost four hundred yards
into two games. You gotta love JK. Dobbins, who comes
over from Baltimore and Gus Edwards, and I get it
that Justin Herbert has banged up. We talked about this
(01:10:00):
with a Pas a minute ago. He'll be limping around
in Pittsburgh, but he's well protected. You got a first
rounder Joe Alt, great offensive line there are You know,
there's a real resurgence there. And the truth of the
matter is it's a throwback formula. But credit to Chargers
for basically saying this is going to be our identity,
(01:10:20):
this is going to be our wholesale change. They've adopted
the mindset. We'll see what they do in Pittsburgh Week three.
But at two to zero, as as that couched this,
are they a contender or a pretender? I only mean
to make the playoffs. I say they're a contender, all right.
Speaking of the Steelers, who the Chargers play Sunday, there's
(01:10:41):
a reason why they've never had a losing season under
Mike Tomlin. They have always had the strength and the
same defensive identity. Strong defensive identity, and then what Tomlin
does is he just kind of tinkers and adjust the
offense to do whatever it needs to be complimentary enough
to win games. Now They're doing it with a very
good running game. It's very diverse under a very clever
(01:11:04):
offensive coordinator by the name of Arthur Smith, and he's
actually made justin Field serviceable now. TJ. Watt and the
defense have a couple concerns. The passing game is virtually nonexistent,
but heavy tight end usage that you have one big
play receiver, George Pickens. Special teams have been outstanding in Pittsburgh.
Is Pittsburgh a balanced team? Not really? Are they an
(01:11:27):
explosive team? Not really? But are they a solid, well coached,
physical team with a good defense. Yes, I'll give Pittsburgh
a slight edge that they're contenders. They're not pretenders the Saints.
You didn't have them to in all, neither did I.
(01:11:48):
The best scoring offense in the NFL after two weeks
ninety one points. They routed Carolina, they smoked the Cowboys.
Clint Kubiak turning out to be one of the best
hires in the National Football League this year. He's calling plays.
Alvin Kamara has sung his praises. Loves the running, the
running plays and the blocking scheme. It looks like a
(01:12:09):
very rejuvenated team. Dennis Sallin maybe not so great as
a head coach, but not terrible as the defensive coordinator.
He's got a defense that's getting the job done. I
think perhaps he's motivated by the fact. I think he
is on the hot seat. He was on the hot seat,
and Derek Carr seems to have heard the cat calls
for Spencer Rattler. They've responded the first two games. I'm
(01:12:31):
not going to put the Saints in the contender category.
I'm not, but I'm not gonna put him in the
pretender category either. Yeah, my butt might be so from
sitting on the fence on this one, but I got
to see a lot more. Got to see a lot
more now. The Seattle Seahawks are also too and oh
they haven't had the toughest schedule. They have the Broncos
and home and the Patriots on the road, but they're
still NFL teams. You've got Gino Smith, a couple of
(01:12:52):
downfield receivers, DK Metcalf, Jackson Smith and Jigba. They got
going against the Patriots, they went nuts. This is a
versatile team. They're trying to get more playmaking going on
both sides of the ball. They're responding. This is a
franchise that had got a little stale under Pete Carroll.
NFC is a very tough conference. Seattle still got games
(01:13:14):
coming up against the Dolphins, the Lions of forty nine
ers the Bills in the next four weeks. They're rebooting.
But I can't put Seattle in the contender category. I've
got them in the pretender category. But you for two
to zero. Tampa Bay Buccaneers pull acts the Commanders week
one at home. They were my best bet last week.
(01:13:34):
They beat the Lions outright as a seven point underdog.
The defense is dug deep. Their pass rush and coverage
assets are much better than people realize. Give it up
for Todd Bowles. If you saw the Lions of a
very good defensive offensive line, if you saw what the
Lion Tampa Bay's defensive front did last week, you'd be
very impressed. They very much passed the eyeball test. And
(01:13:57):
also the offense is much more streamlined. They've got a
new offensive coordinator by the name of Liam Cohen, very creative,
able to put playmakers in space. Tampa Bay has no
trouble moving the ball. He was a prolific in Kentucky.
Liam Cohen only also spent some time with the Rams.
I do believe that the Bucks are contenders. I do
believe they are the Minnesota Vikings two and oh. They've
(01:14:19):
dominated with some big defensive players. The first couple of
weeks they took down the Giants. They made them. I
don't know how they did what they did to the
forty nine ers, but perhaps Brian Flores is an early
cadinate for Defensive Coordinator of the Year. He's got a
defense that just pressures you to no end. The offense
has been good with Sam Darnold can't continue. We don't know.
(01:14:40):
Here's the concern because of the Lions and Packers in
the division and the very loaded conference. Right now, I'm
very much on the fence with the Vikings. I can't
call them pretenders. I won't call them contenders either. They
stuck out the Texans, Packers, Jets, Allons as their next
four opponents, the Buffalo Bills. They're contenders. They have a
new run heavy identity, they got a lot more momentum.
(01:15:01):
Josh Allen is the real deal, Joe Brady calling plays.
They seem to have found their way. Buffalo is a
big time contender, as is Houston. Houston starts the season
two and zero. The rest of the division is winless.
Lock them in their contenders. Finally, the Kansas City Chiefs.
Do you really doubt this team? Their culture, you know
(01:15:22):
their roster, Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, They even backfill in
with some speedy receivers. I believe the Chiefs are big
time contenders. So of those teams I just mentioned, I
expect all but maybe two to make the playoffs. How
about the O and two teams. We're gonna get to
those up at the top of the hour. Coming up next,
(01:15:44):
our guy Shay had some very strong thoughts about Kayleb Williams,
and he's not wrong. He's not wrong from this stand.
I got chased back on this, and you know, we'll
see what happens as the rest of the system, as
the rest of this season plays out. But if you're
gonna tell me, you're gonna sing the praises of Caleb
Williams when he I don't think he was great at USC.
(01:16:08):
Everything's theoretical. He certainly wasn't great at He certainly wasn't
great at AT in the preseason, and he hasn't been
great in the regular season. So don't tell me show me.
We'll get Shay's thoughts coming up. I'm Bernie Fraddle. We're
coming to live from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio, Tyrock
dot Com Studios. Keep it locked right here. You listen
to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. All right,
back on the Bernie Frattles Show, it's time for the
(01:16:29):
Caleb watch. As we head into the third week of
the season. Let's set this up. My guy Shay clearly
pointed out beginning the season had some predictions which I'm
gonna turn over to him in a second, but let's
revisit ever so quickly, his debut against the Titans, Williams
didn't want anybody, fourteen to twenty nine for eighty three yards,
no touchdowns, and somehow the Bears pull it out. You
(01:16:52):
go from an underwhelming performance to a debut on Sendinette
against Demico Ryans not so great there as well. And
the truth of the matter is, I know it's never
easy for rookies, but when you hold out of the
ball too long, which was an issue, and you haven't
been particularly accurate, which is becoming an issue, it's starting
to raise the myebro. So Shaye take it away, give
(01:17:14):
us your thoughts, because so far you're looking like a profit.
Speaker 11 (01:17:17):
I mean, yeah, Bernie, So last week I was kind of,
I kind of just I didn't go too deep into it,
but I said, Kayleb Williams is going to be a bust.
And I came to that conclusion just because from quarterback,
he was a big play quarterback. He made big throws,
he was accurate, but he didn't really have great down
vision when it came to just doing five yard ten
yard passes. He really relied on his big arm, which
(01:17:38):
which is great for college quarterbacks, but when you come
to the NFL, you can't just start slinging. And unfortunately
for him, he got picked by the Bears, which aren't
really good, I mean behind the Browns probably, they aren't
really good at getting their quarterbacks ready for the NFL.
And throwing him in Week one, it just I knew
it wasn't going to be good for him, and I
mean I was saying it to you during the break.
(01:17:58):
He's been sacked nine times, which is the most out
of any quarterback in the NFL right now. So I mean,
I don't think the Bears did the right things in
terms of putting the right people around him making the
O line right and just making him feel safe in
the backfield. I just I think that this is just
it's going to be disaster tomorrow again against the Colts
(01:18:19):
again because the Colts are just they're trying to get
their defense is trying to make it a resurgence, and
I really don't think the Bears offense is going to
be able to do anything at all against any team
this year. So again that's why I think Caleb Williams
is going to be a bus But who knows. He
can definitely turn it around, but again I just think
his biggest his biggest sin is being on the Bears.
Speaker 2 (01:18:42):
Well, we'll see, and so far you're right where we
visit this next week. Look, Caleb Williams relied a lout
on his athleticism in college. The level of athlete in
the NFL's far superior, and the Bears had nothing to
do with him throwing into triple coverage when trying to
avoid a sack that was an interception. He had two
terrible last week and still holds the ball too long.
(01:19:03):
So we'll see what happens. We're not picking on him,
we're just calling him as we see him. So so
far shay your observations on kleb or spot on. Let's
see what happens next week. We'll give them us flowers
if he does better. Coming up, we look at the
O and two teams who are contenders. Keep it locked.
This is with the Bernie Fratles Show on Fox Sports Radio. Yep,
(01:19:24):
that's right. You heard the man that the Bernie Fratterle
Show keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Frattle.
We are coming to live from the tyrect dot com
studios here in Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio tyrerect dot com.
We'll help you get there an unmatched selection fans, free shipping,
free rodentive protection, and over ten thousand recommended installers. Tyrec
dot com the way tire buying should be. So we
(01:19:48):
have sung the praises of the teams who started out
two to zero this year, and there are several the chiefs,
the Techxon's, the Bills, the Vikings, Tampa Bay, Seattle, the
Saints Pittsburgh, and the Los Angeles Chargers. And history tells
(01:20:09):
us that when you do that, give about a sixty
five percent chance to make it the playoffs. When you
start out oh to two. If you go back to
nineteen seventy you've only got about a nine percent chance
to make it the playoffs. But I'm going to start
with the team that I think will make the playoffs,
even though they started out O one, two and frankly,
(01:20:29):
that's been their history. Talking about the Cincinnati Bengals, for
the third straight season, they raised their own degree of
difficulty back, causing all the adversity for themselves. Now, that
didn't work last season because Joe Burrow went down, but
two years ago they got off the mat and they
ended up going to the playoffs and did pretty well
(01:20:51):
for themselves. The good news for the Bengals is even
though the Steelers are two to zero, the Browns are
one and one, and the reigning AFC North champion Ravens
are also zero and two, the schedule for Cincinnati gets
immediately better now that they're back on track. I think
offensively and defensively. You know, they got the Commanders and
(01:21:12):
Panthers and coming up here, and there's no question I
think Cincinnati gets back on track. As long as Joe
Burrows stays healthy, I'm going to call the zero to
two Cincinnati Bengals contenders. I'm also gonna hold my nose
and call the Ravens contenders. I don't like what I see,
not athletically, not schematically. It's just there's something about their
(01:21:36):
execution and high leverage moments. The Ravens couldn't get the
final touchdown they needed to beat the Chiefs in Week
one of their season opener in Kansas City. They couldn't
do enough to hold off the Raiders last week at
home week two, even though they were nine and a
half point favorites. And so you start off the season
by a rally falling short, and then you blow a
(01:21:58):
ten point lead. And here's what's interesting. The Ravens threw
the ball well, they ran the ball well, and their
defensive stats were fighting against the Raiders. All those stats
indicated they should have won. But then again, Baltimore was
only three for eleven on third downs and they committed
eleven penalties for one hundred and five yards. So Baltimore
(01:22:19):
was sloppy. It cost a team a close game. They
can't do that against their upcoming opponents, the Cowboys coming
up here at about twelve hours. The Bills, the Bengals,
and the Bucks are for their next five opponents. So
you allow the Raiders to catch fire. In the fourth
quarter of all the games, you're gonna find grinding out.
(01:22:42):
That's when you're gonna look back in which you had back.
But be that as it may, I'm still gonna hold
my nose and call the Ravens contenders because I think
they can come back, and they're owing to. They're fifteen
games left. Can they go for instance eleven and four
of their next fifteen They can, but they have to
do it. The Indianapolis Colts, they're zero and too. Consider
(01:23:05):
them pretenders. Anthony Richardson can do some amazing things, and
one minute later you ask yourself why he's even in
the NFL. He's going to need help from Jonathan Taylor.
He's been getting it. He's got some deep play targets
which you'll hit down then. But the other side of
the ball is very concerning. The Colts defense is very
concerning you. They looked very poor. The Colts did their
(01:23:31):
first two weeks against the Texans and the Packers, who
both run the ball very effectively, and so Indianapolis on
defense has a lot of holes that are exploitable, and
so they're going to need Anthony Richardson not to flash
some of the time. But all the time, and he's
been erratic. So the Colts, they're with the Bears, the
Steelers next. They got a real challenge to avoid going
(01:23:53):
zero to four. I'm gonna call the Colts big time pretenders.
The Jacksonville Jaguars got to call them pretenders. Also, they're
owing to Trevor Lawrence. He's not lived up to his contract,
not even close. He's got a new wide receiver corps.
He's doing the best he can. Jackson's The Jaguars running
game has been very inconsistent. The defense is also kind of,
(01:24:16):
you know, up and down. Despite the fact they do
have a lot of young talent. This is a team
that's under to you if you look at their roster
and Doug Peterson, I think is a good coach. But
they're a disappointing team. And if this keeps up, you're
already hearing whispers that you know, Doug Peterson could be
in trouble. The Rams they're owing too. I'm sorry, they're pretenders.
(01:24:39):
They completely profile pretenders and every aspect. All right. They
don't have Pooka Nakua, they don't have Cooper Cup right now,
when you have Kyraen Williams Nakua and Cooper Cup with Stafford,
that gives them a nice base for a very good offense.
The problem is the defense. Without Aaron Donald and he
(01:25:00):
Morris left, they have too many young key pieces to
try to keep glued together to put the semblance of
an NFL defense on the field. The Rams get gashed
against the run game, and they've been burned on big
pass plays. You saw what happened against the Lions, and
the Cardinals did plenty of damage through the air. The
(01:25:20):
Rams are in big trouble. They're missing too many offensive
pieces and their defense is full of holes. I think
it's the Rams are They've started slow and they're gonna
fade big time. Pretenders are own two Denver Broncos. I
got to call them pretenders as well. They're owing to
their offense stinks in every which way so far, bo
Nix looks very underwhelmed. Sean Payton has dumbed down the
(01:25:44):
passing game that he's created. Javonte Williams is non existent.
I don't know what happened to the running game. The
defense is actually hung in there. Haven't really been susceptible
to the past, But all you gotta do is run
the ball against Denver because Denver can't score, and I
think they're going to have a lot of struggles ahead.
You've got, you know, the Broncos are going to be
(01:26:06):
facing some very good defenses coming up the Bucks. They'll
go to sleep on the Bucks. They got maybe the
best defensive front seven in football. The Jets, Raiders, Chargers,
next five games, Saints. All those defenses are above average.
The Broncos are not only pretenders, they'll be completely out
of contention probably by Halloween. Tennessee Titans, they've hung in
there in a couple of tight games versus the Bears
(01:26:27):
and Jets. They had a seventeen point lead against the Bears.
Will Lewistow appears to be a major work in progress,
and you've got too many new players to put together
new coaching. I think this team can actually be competitive
and get better throughout the season, but they're not going
to avoid being pretenders. So chalk to Tennessee Titans is
(01:26:48):
another zero and T two team that we're going to
put in the pretender category. Boy, As I joked earlier
with Steve Fessik, the New York Giants, if they were
a fight, they would have stopped it I realized that
Daniel Jones paid a little better to Washington face the
much easier defense than a kicker gets hurt. My god,
but listen, you know, DEBI why bother? The Giants are
(01:27:14):
what we thought they were, shaky their pretenders. Let's move on. Finally,
the Carolina Panthers. Kind of curious to see what the
Carolina Panthers look like coming up here in a few hours,
will be at the Raider game. You hate to do
this kind of stuff because you're dealing with professional athletes.
(01:27:37):
But if you skip ahead to Week ten, there'll be
a game played in Munich and Germany, and I'm sure
beer sales will flow well because the two teams playing
are the Giants. So I just mentioned in the Panthers
in Munich that game should decide who's going to get
the number one draft pick. Look, I'm gonna go out
(01:27:57):
on a limb and assume that whoever loses that game's
probably going to get the first round draft for the
number one overall draft pick. Carolina should be used to it, right, Look,
they're owing to their absolute pretenders. So all of the Giants,
the Panthers, the Titans, Broncos, Rams, Jaguars, Colts, Ravens, and Bengals.
(01:28:18):
Of all those teams, and that might be being generous,
only the Bengals and Ravens are contenders. These statistics, these
numbers that you hear that are born out over decades,
are true. If you start out two and zero sixty
five percent of the you know you, sixty five percent
of those end up making the playoffs, you start out
(01:28:40):
zero and two ninety one percent. Don't pretty hard to
argue against what we've seen. We looked ahead with Steve
Ezick broke down every game. Let's take a minute to
look backward because a lot of times what happened the
week before can give you some perspective on what is ahead.
So coming up, I will share with you who I've
(01:29:01):
identified as the NFL Week two winners and losers as
we head into Week three. Hey, football fans, be sure

You see the show posted right after we get off
the air. Week two of the National Football League kind
of had a theme I would call it upset Sunday.
Why because if you were to take a role call
(01:30:29):
of what the group think, Gecko Chamber had listened as
the legitimate Super Bowl contenders, and every one of these
teams were favored by at least five and a half points,
and they all lost out right. We start with the
San Francisco forty nine ers. They got smoked by the
Minnesota Vikings. They got taken apart. The Dallas Cowboys completely
(01:30:51):
mollu op by the New Orleans Saints. The Baltimore Ravens,
you saw what happened there, nine and a half point favorites,
the Raiders overcome a ten point ever, sit and get
the job done. The Detroit Lions everybody's trendy favorite. Now
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stroll into Detroit. They take care
of business. So you could, I think reasonably call it
(01:31:13):
upset Sunday. Now, those are all pretty good teams. I'm
not big on Dallas, but these are teams that are
good teams. Niners, Ravens, Lions. Okay, but it's undeniable that
one of two things are gonna happen. They're going to
develop a concerning pattern, which I think is going to
(01:31:33):
happen in Dallas and or you're gonna fix it. Now,
Baltimore is a team of concern. I think as well.
They now have ten losses. The Ravens, believe it or not,
has had ten situations in whence they've lost a game
that they had to lead by at least seven points.
(01:31:55):
This has happened ten times now in the last four seasons.
That's problematic. And should the Ravens lose in Dallas here
coming up in about twelve hours, well it'd be the
only the second time in franchise history that the Ravens
started out zero to three. The last time was twenty fifteen.
But in every week, whether or not you're on your
(01:32:16):
way to the super Bowl or not, there are winners
and losers based on the positivity. Let's take a look
at the green Bay Packers. Clearly winners. Now, why do
I say that? It had to be horrifying to see
Jordan Love go down Week one toward the end of
the game that knee injury. No one knew what the
(01:32:38):
initial diagnosis is going to be. People thought you six
weeks But not only has Green Bay been the beneficiary
of some positive news. First, Jordan Love's injury apparently was
not as serious as it originally appeared. Secondly, so far,
the offense has been fine during Jordan Love's time away,
(01:33:01):
and we believe Jordan Love will play week four. How
did Green Bay do it, hey, the old fashioned way
they ran it. Packers ran the ball fifty three times
last week, ten times more than the next closest team,
which was the Chargers. Imagine that running the ball ten
more times than Jim Harbaugh's Chargers did. And they had
(01:33:22):
kind of this moderate passing attack and the truth of
the matter is it was effective. Maybe not sensational, but
it was efficient. And you really can't give Malik Willis
too big of a workload when it comes to passing.
But you know, under his tutelage, as it were, green
(01:33:44):
Bay managed to sustain drives and they double up the
Indianapolis Colts in time of possession and won sixteen to ten.
And now the Packers have two upcoming opponents, the Titans
and Vikings, that have tough defenses. But here's the beauty.
They don't need to rush Jordan Love back at the
risk of falling behind because only the Vikings are two
(01:34:05):
and all. But be that as it may. I do
think you're gonna see love next week. So when you
consider how the Packer season started with the injury and
how they've acquitted themselves since they're in the winter category,
how about Jonathan Gannon and the Arizona Cardinals. They keep
winning and they win big games. Now, this only goes
down as the fifth victory in Jonathan Gannon, their new
(01:34:29):
head coach, with his eighteen games with the team. However,
think about it, Arizona has a kind of a high ceiling.
They've beaten the Cowboys, the Falcons, the Steelers of Philadelphia, Eagles.
Now that was all in twenty twenty three. Now they
hammer the Rams, but they don't just hammer them, they
hammer them forty one to ten. That was the most
(01:34:51):
complete game that the Arizona Cardinals are played under Jonathan Gannon,
who appears to have a pretty good uh. I would say,
what a good grip on things. So far, Cayler Murray
looks healthy, he looks motivated. The passing attack has flourished,
and so far, it looks like Kyler Murray is really
(01:35:13):
starting to build his report with Marvin Harrison. Junior Cardinals
gained two hundred and thirty one yards on the ground
last week and forty carries, that's a big number. It's
almost six yards of carry. The defense limited the Rams
to only two third down conversions, and Arizona also put
up almost five hundred yards of offense. I get it,
the Rams didn't have Puka Nakua, but this was total domination.
(01:35:37):
After week two, you have to put the Cardinals in
the thumbs up category. I'm happy to see Sam Donald
having the success he's having. He now after JJ McCarthy
had his season ending injury, became unchallenged as the Viking
starting quarterback. But guess what, Sam Donald at least so far, again,
(01:35:59):
he's making the most opportunity. One week after they dominate
the New York Giants. Okay, do with that what you will,
but he went on to carve up what might be
end up being the best defense in the National Football League.
How what he did. What Sam Donald and the Vikings
did against the forty nine Ers last week is incredibly impressive.
(01:36:21):
They beat the Niners twenty three to seventeen. Well, it's
more remarkable Jordan Addison TJ. Hockinson were both out and
Justin Jefferson had to leave the game early. Donald's completed
seventy two percent of his passes this season. He's thrown
for just under five hundred yards, four touchdowns, two interceptions.
It's only two games in. As always with Donald, as
(01:36:42):
long as he didn't turn the ball over, doesn't try
to play hero ball, plays within the offense. I think
he's more than a serviceable quarterback and under Kevin O'Connell's tutelage,
even if he's not in Minnesota. Remember he's only got
a one year deal in Minnesota. Sam Donald is making
a case for himself that he's got a role in
the National Fall League after you know, pretty rough starts
(01:37:02):
in New York and Carolina, so you'd have to put
Sam Darnold into plus category. Finally, how about Antonio Pears.
You know the history of interim coaches getting a full
time gig in the NFL that doesn't necessarily rate well
when it comes to long term success. There's been a couple,
(01:37:24):
but for the most part, the odds are against it.
The Raiders had lost seven other previous eight road games
going into Sunday. All the Raiders did was going to
Baltimore and completely steal a game as a nine and
a half point underdog. Against the Ravens. Team thought to
be a very short list on the Super Bowl contender list,
and they may still be. They blew the ten point lead.
(01:37:47):
The one thing you can say about this Raiders team
is they do fight. They fought and Max Crosby, they
got a couple of big time playmakers. It's not been
without obstacles, but it feels like Antonio Piers says really
turned the culture around in Las Vegas. Now, does that
mean they're gonna win ten games? I didn't say that.
I didn't say that. But in Sunday's twenty six to
(01:38:10):
twenty three win again. When you go into you know,
when you go into Baltimore and you're down ten points
with seven minutes to go in the fourth quarter, and
let's not forget on the other side of the ball
is rating MVP Lamar Jackson. Then the Raiders closed it
to seven points of the field goal, and then they
(01:38:32):
played real complimentary football. The defense clamped down big time.
They forced consecutive three and outs against Baltimore, did not
allow them to get back to a two score lead.
And by the way, make no mistake, I think the
Raiders have a legitimate identity now it's their defense. We'll
see what they do the rest of the way. But again,
we're only two weeks in the show's tonight, we got
(01:38:53):
to talk about the here and now. The defense is
their identity. And oh, by the way, for the entire
the game, Baltimore was only three of eleven on third
down conversions twenty seven percent. Baltimore has the much better roster,
but guess what, the Raiders had far more heart and
they very much showed it on Sunday. So in the
(01:39:14):
plus category winners Antonio Pierce, Sam Darnold, Jonathan Gannon in
the Arizona Cardinals, and give it up to the Green
Bay Packers. They were dealt some lemons and they made lemonade.
At least so far. Those are the winners. Well, for
every winner, there's a loser, and there's four which I'm
going to share with you coming up. But first let's
(01:39:38):
go back to our guy, Steve de Seger with the latest.
Speaker 6 (01:39:42):
Let's start with college football tonight, easy wins for number
one Texas, number three Ohio State, and number five ranked
Old Miss. Number six Tennessee won impressively at Oklahoma twenty
five to fifteen. The balls lead in the fourth quarter
was twenty two to three. Seventh ranked Missouri got a
double overtime victory over Vanderbilts thirty to twenty seven as
Vandy missed a thirty one yard field goal attempt at
(01:40:04):
the end. Wins for Miami and Penn State and for
Michigan on a touchdown run in the final minute, beating
USC twenty seven to twenty four, even though Michigan had
just thirty two yards passing in the game seven for twelve.
Twelfth ranked Utah led twenty two to three at Oklahoma
State with under six minutes left utes win at twenty
two to nineteen. Oklahoma State was ranked fourteenth in the
(01:40:24):
country this week. BYU beat number thirteen Kansas State thirty
eight nine, even though BYU trailed six to nothing late
first half, and Buffalo in overtime won at number twenty
three Northern Illinois twenty three twenty. The NASCAR winner was
Kyle Larson at Bristol, his fifth victory of the year.
Major League Baseball has about a week left in the
regular season. The Yankee Saturday Night pounded Oakland ten nothing
(01:40:47):
Aaron Judge with his fifty fourth homer, and Baltimore lost
at home in ten innings to Detroit six to four.
So the Yankees first in the AL East, now five
games ahead of Baltimore starting on Tuesday.
Speaker 7 (01:40:57):
Baltimore at the Yankees.
Speaker 6 (01:40:59):
Starting on Tuesday, It's the Padres at Dodgers, and the
LA lead in the NLS, just three games over the Padres.
Now Dodgers lost at home. Padres won at home. Mets
and Braves each one Saturday. Braves still two games out
of the last NL wildcard spot starting on Tuesday.
Speaker 5 (01:41:15):
Mets at Braves.
Speaker 6 (01:41:16):
Royals lost their six game in a row, Arizona one.
It's fourth straight. Minnesota at Boston reigned out victories for
Houston and Seattle and to the NFL. Texans running back
Joe Mixon is out for Sunday with an ankle injury.
Forty nine Ers tight end George Kittle out with a
hamstring injury. Jacksonville tighten Evan Ingram out again this weekend
with a hamstring injury. I'm Steve Desager.
Speaker 2 (01:41:39):
All right, thanks, Steve, appreciate it. So who were the
losers coming out of Week two in the National Football League. Well,
I got to start with Chicago's offensive line. You heard
Shane mentioned earlier that Caleb Williams has been sacked nine
times this year. And even if Caleb Williams is not
known for getting the ball out of his hand quickly,
(01:42:00):
let's be fair, Chicago's offensive line has not been great.
The Bears did make an adjustment from Week one to
week two to try to get Caleb Williams to get
the ball out quicker, and early on against the Texans,
it felt like Caleb Williams had a little bit of
a rhythm and started to distribute some passes around the field.
But as the game wore on Chicago's front, they could
(01:42:22):
not hold their blocks long enough for even quick release throws,
which was only exacerbated by the team being an obvious
passing downs. They're down in distant situation with brutal all night.
To be fair again, Caleb Williams, He's made his share
of mistakes, a couple of terrible underthrows that resulted in interceptions.
One was in a triple coverage. Still, it's tough enough
(01:42:44):
to be a quarterback in this league. Tough enough to
be a rookie quarterback in this league. When you have
seven sacks and eleven quarterback hits in a single game,
that's a recipe for well, you know what to fill
in the blank there, Chicago's OH line does need to
do better. By the way, what happened to all those
fine folks at ESPN that said they thought, and I'm paraphrasing,
(01:43:06):
not quoting, that Caleb was walking into the best situation
ever for a rookie quarterback, or a first round quarterback,
or a number one overall pick quarterback. I don't know.
I'm just saying, maybe they'll be proving me wrong. I
don't want to be that guy. Maybe neatly ignoring that
I've always thought Dan Marino walked into the best situation
ever of a first round guy. He's drafted back in
(01:43:28):
nineteen eighty three. Remember he was the sixth the six quarterbacks,
so there were low expectations. Then he went to a
team called the Miami Dolphins. The Miami Dolphins had just
come off a Super Bowl, so he's joining a super
Bowl roster with low expectations, and he was coached by
Don Shula, a true quarterback whisperer. That might have been
a little bit better situation than Kayleb Williams, But I
make no excuses for Kleb Williams. You think CJ. Stroud
(01:43:51):
walked into a great situation last year. It's up to
you sometimes who were losers last week? Sorry, gotta call
it as I see it. The Lions got into the
red zone, that offense looked like a drunk ground across
the nicy street. They lost to the Bucks twenty to
sixteen to seven point favorites. Detroit had count them seven
trips inside the twenty seven trips into the end zone
(01:44:15):
into the red zone. Typically that's a pretty good indicator
that you've got ball control and you're dominating offensively. But
for the Lions, the results showed there was genuine ineptitude
inside the twenty inside the red zone. From those seven trips,
they only got one touchdown. That's fourteen percent. That's not
(01:44:37):
a winning formula Since two thousand. That would mark the
second worst performance in offensive red zone efficiency when the
team had at least seven trips inside the twenty yard line.
That's not good. Detroit was completely out of sorts on
offense the entire game. And by the way, you have
to get some credit Buccaneer's coach, Todd Bowles and his
(01:44:57):
defense obviously deserve a town a credit. And I said,
I've said it three times on the show. Now, Tampa
Bay's defensive front seven is very good. Constantly pressure Jared Goff,
constantly hit Jared Goff. They were moving, they were pushing
that line's offensive line, which is very good backwards. As
a result, a lot of the Lions plays were designed horizontally.
(01:45:20):
You know, one of his better efforts. Right, He's gonna
have to wear this one, all right. The Dallas Cowboys
hired Mike zimmer and as their new offensive defensive coordinator.
And four years ago, Mike Zimmer was actually head coach
of the Vikings and Zimmer saw, you know, he saw
(01:45:44):
Alvin Kamara score six touchdowns in a single game. Now,
now as the defensive coordinator to the Cowboys, he watched
Kamara ripoff four more. He's you know, Zimmer is gonna
have Alvin Kamara. He's gonna have nightmares about Alvin Kamara.
Every time he coaches, Alvin Kamara always scored like ten
touchdowns against him. This last week, Kamara had one hundred
(01:46:07):
and eight yards from scrimmage on twenty two touches. More importantly,
for the Cowboys, it was a home opener. They had
won sixteen straight home regular season games and all of
a sudden. Their last two home games, the playoff game
against Green Bay and now this game against this last
Saturday's game against the Saints. That's got to raise some
(01:46:28):
very massive concerns because Dallas has an offensive identity that's
tied to their running game, and they're not getting enough
production from Ezekiel Elliott. Dak Prescott has been very uneven.
What does he think it's January? He's usually mister September.
In the first team offense. They didn't get into the
end zone their first three trips into the red zone.
Right by the way. The defense, Mike Zimmer's defense, and
(01:46:52):
this surprised me had no answer for the New Orleans Saints.
Speed will as continue. I kind of brazenly said a
month ago, I thought this was going to be the
year of the Cowboys come back to Earth and go
eight to nine. I meant what I said. I gave
my reasons. Since then, Dak got the back, they're all
got paid, and they went into Cleveland and whooed him
up week one. But you know, maybe that's in retrospect
(01:47:15):
that's going to have some context and maybe not be
as as impressive when you when you when you stop
to think about it. Finally, the irrepressible Will Levis. I
don't know how this guy gets out of his own way,
but he's going to have to. I think with a
guy like Levis, who does have a lot of physical talent,
there are some offensive cordners that will believe it's prudent
(01:47:37):
to give a young quarterback leeway, get out of their way,
allow them to figure out when do you know, stay
within the framework of the offense and when they have
the autonomy to think to take chances. You know, there's
no saying the more you think, the slower your feet get.
But Titans, their quarterback, their franchise. Will Levis, now in
a second season, he should know better, right he had
(01:48:00):
that again. I had Tennessee plus four and a half
week one, and they led by seventeen against the Bears,
who can forget that incredibly bad decision that led to
a pick six. They became really the difference in the
loss of the Bears. Levis took points off the board
against the Jets also and what ended up in a
twenty four to seventeen loss because in the second quarter,
Tennessee in a third and goal from the six yard line,
(01:48:23):
Levis gets in the shotgun. He takes a snap, he
feels pressure before he was even tripped up as he
was falling to the turf. Why he would do this,
I don't know. He underhand tossed the ball to his
running back Tyja Spears. It was a backwards pass which
became a fumble, which were recovered by the Jets. And
after the game, well, Brian Callahan, as head coach, was
(01:48:45):
none too happy. He ripped will Levis. He said, it's
clear these kinds of mistakes won't be tolerated much longer. Well,
this is a coach who wasn't even around when will
Levis was drafted. So those are the four you put
in the minus category. Chicago the line and Caleb Williams
the Lions in the red zone, Mike Zimmer, Dallas's new
defensive coordinator, and Will Levis. We shall see what the
(01:49:09):
upcoming Week three shows, and you can be sure there'll
be a whole new list of winners and losers coming
up this week. Have you noticed how prolific the kickers
have been this season? My god, some of these fifty
yeared field goals that they feel like chip shots, they
feel like they're automatic. There are some theories as to
(01:49:32):
why the kickers have done so well at least the
first couple weeks of the season. Again, the operative word
is theory. But I've got a few theories, and we've
got some receipts as well. Because kicking long field goals
in the NFL all of a sudden looks way too easy.
I've got the numbers to back it up, and they
(01:49:53):
got the theories behind the trend. Him Bernie Frider were
coming to you live from the Las Vegas Fox Sports
Radio TIREC dot studios. Keep it locked right here. You're
listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Hi,
right back at the Bernie Fradle Show, Fox Sports Radio,
Coming to live from the tyrac dot com studios here
in Las Vegas. We are fourteen minutes away from the
(01:50:16):
dance sensation sweep of the nation. What kind of brand
new fool you followed by what my name? In case
you hadn't noticed at least the first couple of weeks, man,
NFL kickers are making it look too easy. Everything looks
like a layup. Now if you don't believe me, here's
what the numbers are. So far, kickers have attempted thirty
(01:50:39):
nine field goals this year already, thirty nine from fifty
yards or longer. They've made thirty five of them, they've
missed fort's ninety percent. What's changed or is it maybe
just what short trend? So apparently, if you start to
(01:51:01):
peel back the onion, one of the narratives has been
that so far, in the first couple of weeks, the
weather's been really good. You've had great weather, which means
you have good footing, you have good playing conditions, you
have playing surfaces that are ideal, and typically that's a
(01:51:22):
factor the first few weeks. The first couple weeks in
the NFL as well, the fields aren't chewed up. They're
in a great shape, especially the natural grass fields. Well,
that's going to lead to fewer issues for kickers, all right,
Once it gets a little colder, maybe it gets a
little windier, get some weather in there, maybe the fields
are not quite as secure, maybe you start to see
(01:51:44):
some issues for kickers. But so far, one of the
thoughts theories is that because the playing surfaces are in
such great shape, especially the natural grass fields, and the
weather's been pretty good, the conditions are fairly idea. The
other thing too, is we now have more indoor stadiums
than ever. And not only do we have more indoor stadiums,
(01:52:08):
we have more specialist coaches. And it's no longer you
know the kicker and the football team's a dork. Right,
there's exposure to kicking as a specialized skill. You now
have guys, We have a generation of players that grow
up aspiring to be kickers, compared to how it used
to be when guys played another position and then kicked.
(01:52:29):
That used to even be the case in the National
Football League. There were players who played defensive kicked. The
world champion Green Bay Packers had had those guys back
way back in the day. Right, So you've got better
conditions better you know, fields are good, the weather's been good,
more indoor stadiums, and you have specialist coaches who really
(01:52:49):
work on kickers, and there's exposure of kicking. Now it's
considered it sought after specialized skill. And there's one other
thing too. This sort of flew under the radar for me.
There have been rule changes which make it much more
difficult to block a kick. A block kick counts as
(01:53:10):
a missfield goal, so you can't cover the center. You
can't jump up and down, you can't step on the
back of one of your teammates, you can't land over
the line of scrimmage, you can't push in terror a
linement backward. So at least in a National Football league,
you don't see it all of a lot of block kicks.
(01:53:30):
Keep an eye on that. You saw a big one
today in the Michigan USC game on an extra point,
but you don't see it as much in the NFL.
And so you add it all up. The great weather,
the good conditions, the ideal conditions, the ideal surfaces, more
indoor stadiums, more specialist kickers, more situations where guys are
(01:53:53):
aspiring to go up to kick and they train for
it specifically. Then you add the rule changes make it
very hard to block it kick. He can't cover the center,
you can't jump up and down, you can't land over
on the other side of the scrimmage like the LeVar leap,
you can't push interior lineman. You don't see a lot
of block kicks. Therefore that's a factor as well. These
(01:54:13):
are all theories we'll see if this trend continues. But
there's one real odd ball trend, and I talked about
this earlier. Only this team at the Baltimore Ravens to
me are loaded on paper, but they're missing. They're missing
DNA Championship DNA. In my opinion, I really feel that way.
(01:54:35):
And even their kicker is part of it. Justin Tucker
has who historically has been just about as automatic as
you can imagine. And you've even still got the record
for the longest field goal sixty six yards still stands well.
Love those four kicks that are missed that I told
(01:54:57):
you a minute ago thirty nine attempts from fifty ars
are Moore thirty five or made guess who missed two
of the four all bios A lonesome yep, Justin Tucker.
The irony is not lost on me. By the way,
Ever so quickly, I'll see the Raiders here coming up
at about twelve hours. Got my CREDENTI for Sunday. I
won't see Bryce Young after eighteen starts. Bryce Young got
(01:55:19):
benched Panthers zero and two, the number one overall pick
from the year before. We'll watch Andy Dalton from the sidelines.
Speaker 9 (01:55:28):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:55:30):
One of the things, you know, I can't get too
deep into this, but one of the benefits that guys
like you know, Aaron Rodgers and even Brett favre Is,
Sir Pat Patrick, Mahomes, Tom Brady. Who else am I
leaving out? Steve Young? I know there's a couple of
(01:55:52):
current quarterbacks in william Not as well. They had the
They had the benefit of watching a veteran do it
for a year and Bryce Young hasn't had that. And
I'm tired of hearing about his height. You knew how
tall he was when he was at Alabama. You could
do the player you could he was. Bryce Young was
drafted because of his incredible ability to process, and I
(01:56:14):
guess obviously the Carolina Panthers placed too much weight on
the interview. They say that the interview with C. J.
Stroud didn't go well, whatever that means. But Dave Canal
it's his first year head coach. He wants to win.
He's getting itchy. He was a quarterback whisperer in Seattle.
He had a great deal of effect on Gino Smith.
(01:56:35):
Remember they ain't right back, or they wrote me up,
but I ain't right back. Dave Canals presided over that
he Baker Mayfield get the bag. Now he's given up.
Let's make no mistake. He's given up on Bryce Young.
I'm convinced of it. When asked about the trade and
by the way, people are inquiring about training for Bryce Young,
(01:56:56):
he says, well, we're not really considering. That's that's a
weak type of answer. You know, you think if they
ask the chiefs if they're trading Patrick malhomes, well, not
really consider you know, well, maybe that's a bad comparison
when you get where I'm going with there, and Canalys
was canned. He said number one responsibilities to help the
Panthers win and this believes I believe this puts us
(01:57:18):
the best chance to win. Well it should. Anthony err
Andy Daltonstone for fifty thousand yards in his career. Meanwhile,
Bryce Young was just eighteen and twenty six with eighty
four yards passing. He's not done well. I wouldn't give
up on him yet. We're going to talk about that
more in future shows. It's something to watch because now
again the group think the echo chamber was taken over
(01:57:39):
and he's getting murdered on social media. All right, coming
up the dance sensation sweep in the nation. What kind
of brand new fool you followed by what my name
keep it locked right here. You listen to the Bernie
Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. Well, that's right, you
heard the man. The Bernie Fradle Show keeps rolling right along.
My name is Bernie Fraddle. We are company line from
(01:58:00):
the tyrag dot com studios here in Las Vegas Fox
Sports Radio. Tyrac dot com will help you get there
and unmatch election, fast free shipping, free road as protection,
and over ten thousand recommend an installers tyrat dot com
the way tire binding should be. Well, we've come to
that time in the week. We've come to that juncture
in the show every Saturday heading into Sunday two am Pacific,
(01:58:24):
five am Eastern RECEEE. As Yogi Berra once said, you
can observe a lot by watching, and that's exactly what
we do here on The Bernie Frotto Show. And around
this great land of ours, from seed to oily Seed,
and even around the globe. Well, people do things. They
engage in behaviors, and sometimes those behaviors are kind of
innocuous and silly and harmless, and other times are far
(01:58:46):
more serious. And many times they run a follow the law.
You can even land you in jail. But no matter
what the behavior is no matter how you characterize it,
no matter how you describe it, no matter how how
you observe it, it always leaves you scratching your head
and asking yourself, what kind of brand new fool are you? Well,
(01:59:12):
this will probably be the most innocuous, the shortest, the sweetest,
and really sort of harmless. What kind of brand new
fool you? And rarely do we delve into the world
of professional sports, but I had to on this one.
Just a couple of months ago, the Washington Nationals had
(01:59:34):
a shortstop. He actually played at the Major League Baseball
All Star Game. His name is c. J. Abrams. Now
he's headed to the miners and he will not be
back in the majors because there's only one week left
in the season. But he's on his way down to
the miners. The Nationals not too happy. They sent down
(01:59:55):
their shortstop with about a week to go in the
regular season. After Abrams were I totally spent the entire night,
not a couple of hours, the entire night at a
casino near Chicago and left just a couple of hours
before the Nationals were to face the Cubs and one
pm game on Friday, and afternoon game, and Washington manager
(02:00:17):
Dave Martinez told reporters, I just want to make sure
everybody knows it wasn't performance base It's an internal issue.
I'm not going to give you specifics all right now.
Abrams has been strugging a little bit. You know, he's
but he did steal thirty one bases, but he's hit
like two forty. But he's been a centerpiece as part
of the rebuild. Let me tell you you know how
hard it is to get to the big leagues. You
(02:00:38):
gotta be good, and you gotta be a little lucky too,
and you gotta you know, you gotta have everything fall
into place. I signed with it Cincinnati Reads many many,
many many years ago, ended up with bone chips on
my elbow. I played with some guys that got to
the big leagues. But it's not easy, and they're always
looking for a replacement, So why give them a reason.
(02:00:59):
As a matter of fact, the fans, they weren't too
happy either. It's a smart bove by the franchise, setting
an example for other players as to what we'll what
will it will not be tolerated. Setting bonders for a
twenty three year old who has achieved anything of lasting significance.
He's hitting about two forty right the lot. The truth
of the matter is, look that to who much is given,
(02:01:23):
much is expected. Short and sweet. This is one of
those rare times, and no one's going to jail. Nobody
got hurt. Maybe a little embarrassed. CJ. Abrams, former shortstop
of the Washington Nationals. What kind of brand new fool
of you? I gotta admit, Yae, that's not one of
(02:01:43):
my stronger ones, but I felt that it needed to
be discussed tonight.
Speaker 5 (02:01:47):
No, it was enjoyable. It was definitely entertainment. And that's
what we have here, Bernie, a show full of entertainment.
Speaker 2 (02:01:54):
And you always got some good ones. Man, what do
you got for us today?
Speaker 11 (02:01:57):
So I got two actually for us this week's special.
I'm trying to break any rules here, but oh I'm
here for it. So this one's a quick one. A
cardboard box with one million dollars was reported stolen from
a Manhattan school beach parent inside of their car. I
don't know who's keeping a million dollars in a cardboard
(02:02:17):
box and who's keeping in in their car, especially in
Los Angeles. But the story goes this Friday, the thirteenth,
which is notorious for being unlucky of last week, was
particularly unlucky for a parent in Manhattan Beach. According to
the Manhattan Beach Police, the parent reported parking in front
of the American Mater's School gym in seventeen hundred block
(02:02:38):
of Laurel Avenue around seven pm. Once they walked their
child into the gym, the parent returned to his car
and discovered a rear passenger window was smashed and a
cardboard box he left in the car was stolen. That
cardboard box contained one million dollars, the victim told to
the police, and officers in the victim discovered a GPX
(02:03:01):
attached to the vehicle that he had no idea about.
Police are currently keeping the victim and information about this
current case under wraps.
Speaker 5 (02:03:11):
But I mean, this just leads me to say, to
the victim.
Speaker 11 (02:03:15):
What kind of fool are you leaving one million dollars
of cash in a cardboard box and a car in
Los Angeles? Quick one, but definitely a crazy one.
Speaker 2 (02:03:26):
Oh yeah, I mean that is about as foolish as
you can get.
Speaker 11 (02:03:28):
I really don't understand it, especially in Los Angeles. Man,
people are bringing the cars all the time. It just
it makes zero sense to me. And this one agree
yeah no, yeah, And this one is going to be
actually taking place on an airline. It's the Scandinavian Airlines.
A flight was diverted after a passenger finds a live
(02:03:49):
mouse inside of his meal.
Speaker 5 (02:03:52):
Not happy about that one. No extra charge though, right, no, no, no,
no extra charge.
Speaker 11 (02:03:57):
Actually, so one of the flights had to make an
emergency landing after a mouse scurried out of a passenger's
in flight meal on Wednesday. Aircraft was flying from Norway's
capital Oslo to Malaga and Spain and was forced to
make an emergency landing in Copenhagen, Denmark. The diversion was
(02:04:18):
in line with the company procedures as the little furrowy
stowaway pose a safety risk. Supposed purportedly, the mouse jumped
out of a little food container that was inside of
the the inside of the plane. This just leads me
to say, whoever packed the.
Speaker 2 (02:04:40):
Food?
Speaker 11 (02:04:41):
I mean, what kind of fool are you? I don't
know how that happens. It might be robotic, it might
be a person. I don't know how they do their
food packing. But that's just that was insane to me.
So two quick.
Speaker 5 (02:04:52):
Stories, crazy two fun ones.
Speaker 2 (02:04:54):
You know, and I fly a lot, a lot.
Speaker 5 (02:05:00):
Those containers are small, Bernie.
Speaker 2 (02:05:02):
I'm trying to think. They don't serve meals on airplanes anymore.
Speaker 5 (02:05:07):
So this was international, right, Yeah, it was an international flight.
Speaker 2 (02:05:10):
Okay, maybe they do on those. They do start that
flu to Paris in May. They gave us a nice
meal like I could have been. It was pretty good,
no mouse though.
Speaker 7 (02:05:16):
You don't count the peanuts anymore. You don't count the peanuts.
Speaker 2 (02:05:19):
They don't even give you peanuts anymore. You gotta buy them.
You gotta buy everything.
Speaker 11 (02:05:24):
There's certain there's certain flights. Yeah, you have to buy them.
Like it's like spirit. You'll have to buy everything pretty much.
Speaker 7 (02:05:29):
Well, I guess I fly Southwest, so they give us
peanuts and cookies, big fact.
Speaker 2 (02:05:34):
You know, you're right after the flight's been in the
air for about an hour, they come by with that basket.
So they get these little pretzels or they're like, yeah,
you're you're you're not wrong, you're not wrong. But no
meals like before, remember back in the day. I mean,
you know we're gonna be getting the meal service now,
everybody sit down. They'd serve you like a little meal,
and they would be like like a Hamburger steak with
(02:05:55):
actual grill marks on it, if there was a grill
like a girl. That's crazy though. A mouse.
Speaker 7 (02:06:02):
Jockey's a jockey whip, you know, mark on that, you know,
because the coulpies something else.
Speaker 2 (02:06:06):
That's a Rodney danger right, you're right, the stake's got marks.
I love when you come out with the mouse. You know.
That was another danger field joke. He said, Hey, waiter,
I gotta fly on my soup. He says, quiet, everybody's
gonna want one now right anyway, never mind? All right,
another rousing edition of what kind of brand new fool
of you? And that leads us now to uh, of course,
(02:06:27):
segue into our second favorite bit that we lovingly recall.
What my name? How about those Texas Longhorns? And I
know that Arch Manning made his debut Saturday. I would
not say it was a stellar debut, but they got
the job done and they won. Texas Longhorns solidify their
(02:06:48):
current number one ranking in college football. Well, the last
time the Texas Longhorns are ranked number one in the
nation in college football. I was president Shane Mogangar, What.
Speaker 5 (02:07:01):
My name like? President of the United States, right.
Speaker 2 (02:07:04):
I should have clarified that. Yes, President of the United States, Obama.
Very good, Barack Obama. It's two thousand and nine. That's so.
That was the year that they went to the National Championship.
Colt McCoy got hurt. Yeah, very good, nicely done.
Speaker 5 (02:07:20):
It was the Red River rivalry, right, that's.
Speaker 2 (02:07:24):
Against Oklahoma, I believe, yeah, it was it. I thought
he got hurt in the National Championship game against Alabama.
Speaker 5 (02:07:31):
Oh wait, wait, you might be right.
Speaker 2 (02:07:33):
All right, I've been sacked more than any of their
quarterback of the National Football the League this season, Mark Ramsey,
what my name.
Speaker 7 (02:07:43):
Is it, Caleb Williams, My guy there it is. Mark's
listening to the show.
Speaker 2 (02:07:51):
That's right. Nicely done, all right. When it comes to
when it comes to passing statistics in the National Football League,
this year, I have the least yards per play in
the National Football League, sham Ogengar. What my name?
Speaker 5 (02:08:07):
Least yards per is it? Brice?
Speaker 2 (02:08:10):
No? No, okay not not Bryce Young yards per play?
So if you complete a pass, that's a play how
many yards and then gets divided by the number of
attempts the least in the National Football League. This season,
I have the least yards per play of any quarterback,
Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 7 (02:08:28):
I'm gonna go with Caleb Williams again.
Speaker 2 (02:08:30):
Caleb Williams at double double. So the Los Angeles Chargers
are two and oh. The last time the Chargers franchise
started off an NFL season at two and oh, I
was the head coach seam Ogngar with my.
Speaker 11 (02:08:51):
Name the last time the Chargers were two and zero.
That's a long time ago, oh man, because it's been
a while.
Speaker 2 (02:09:03):
Yeah, huh, all right, moving on, last time the Chargers
franchise started two and oh, I was the head coach.
Speaker 7 (02:09:11):
Mark Ramsey, what my name, dog coriol.
Speaker 2 (02:09:15):
Oh, that's a good guess, now you're not. It was
a long time ago, shay, when you consider it's only
two and oh, it's twelve years, twenty twelve. It was
actually Norv Turner. Norv Turner was the head coach of
the Chargers the last time they started out too and
oh wow. All right. So Saquon Barkley got off to
a hell of a start in his debut with the
Eagles couple weeks ago. He scored three touchdowns. But before
(02:09:37):
Saquon Barkley, I was the last Philadelphia Eagle to score
three touchdowns in my debut, Mark Ramsey, what my.
Speaker 7 (02:09:44):
Name, I've got a guest, guest, guest, guess guess. Uh,
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:09:54):
Before Saquon Barkley, I was actually the last Philadelphia Eagle
to score three touchdowns my Eagles debut. H Shaane ognguard,
what my name?
Speaker 5 (02:10:05):
Hmm okay, I'm gonna say, uh Sean McCoy.
Speaker 2 (02:10:13):
Well, that's a good guest. I'm gonna give a little
hint here and you guys will get it right away.
He wants he wants build it out over a microphone.
That's my quarterback. That's my quarterback. Remember that it's Arnie
(02:10:33):
does a really good impression. Is yeah, Yeah, we find
that damn thing on YouTube.
Speaker 5 (02:10:41):
Yeah you can, all right.
Speaker 2 (02:10:45):
I have dropped more passes among running backs than any
other running back in the last four years. Mark Ramsey,
wasn't my name?
Speaker 7 (02:10:53):
Running back dropping passes? Running back drop.
Speaker 2 (02:10:57):
More passes among running backs than any other running back
in the last four years.
Speaker 7 (02:11:02):
Uh, mister Elliott, Not mister Elliott.
Speaker 2 (02:11:08):
I'm assuming you men Ezekiel, not mister Elliott. I have
dropped more passes among running backs total of sixteen than
any other running back in the last four years. Shaane
Ognger with.
Speaker 11 (02:11:17):
My name, I'm gonna go with the other Cowboys guy
Tony Pollard, Not Tony Pollard.
Speaker 2 (02:11:24):
It's actually say Kwon Barkley. Oh, that makes sense, Kwon Barquincidentally, coincidentally,
it happens Sunday night or Monday night. All right, I,
as a rookie quarterback, hold this record. I was sacked
seventy six times in my rookie season, more than any
other rookie quarterback in history. Mark Ramsey with my name.
Speaker 7 (02:11:46):
I thought of his last name would have been Carr.
He used to play for Texas.
Speaker 2 (02:11:52):
Can you give us the first name? You go?
Speaker 7 (02:11:54):
The brother of the guy who's I don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:11:56):
I think the judges will allow it. You got it.
David Carr. That's a good one.
Speaker 5 (02:12:01):
He's an analyst.
Speaker 2 (02:12:02):
He is. He does a nice job.
Speaker 5 (02:12:04):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (02:12:05):
Why we were on the subject of rookies. I hold
the rookie running back rushing record rush for over eighteen
hundred yards my rookie season. Shaane Mogangar, what my name.
Speaker 5 (02:12:18):
Like just their rookie season.
Speaker 2 (02:12:19):
Yeah, yeah, it's yeah, it's the rookie rushing record for
a rookie running back for his inaugural season over eighteen
hundred yards. What my name was it?
Speaker 5 (02:12:30):
Alfred Morris? Who Alfred Morris?
Speaker 2 (02:12:33):
Oh, no, no, that's a good name for the No,
not him, I remember him.
Speaker 9 (02:12:37):
Wow.
Speaker 5 (02:12:37):
He was great power back, true power back.
Speaker 2 (02:12:40):
Yes, all right, to this day, I still hold a
rookie running back rushing record rushed for over eighteen hundred
yards my rookie season, Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 7 (02:12:51):
I was just thinking it might have been Earl Campbell.
Speaker 2 (02:12:54):
Oh, that's a good one. Houston oilers back in the day.
It's a funny story about earlka Amble two. Uh. He
had a coach, bum Phillips, who was very quotable, and
the very first day Earl Campbell had a great rookieyear.
So the first day of camp in the second season,
(02:13:15):
they did the mile run and Earl Campbell finished last,
and one of the reporters, smart as reporters, said, coach,
how do you feel about your star running back finishing
last in the mile run? She says, well, if it's
third and a mile, I guess he ain't getting the ball.
Thanks Mark. Yeah, the name is Eric Dickerson is who
I'm looking at, Los Angeles Rams, Eric Dickerson.
Speaker 5 (02:13:36):
Yes, it's sweet goggles on.
Speaker 2 (02:13:38):
After two games this season, I lead the NFL on
all quarterbacks in passing with five hundred and fifty yards.
Mark Ramsey, what my name?
Speaker 7 (02:13:47):
Quarterbacks in passing. Quarterbacks from passing this season is in Mahomes.
Speaker 2 (02:13:52):
Not Patrick Mahomes. No. After the first two games this
year in the National Football League, I lead all quarterbacks
in passing with five one hundred and fifty yards. Uh,
sham Ogenar What my name?
Speaker 5 (02:14:04):
It's uh, it's rock Pardy Rock Party. Yeah, well done,
good for him.
Speaker 2 (02:14:15):
One more so, there are some own two teams out there,
and it's inevitable some of those own two teams are
going to go on three. That doesn't mean you can't
make the playoffs, but the odds are very slim. The
last NFL team to make the playoffs after starting oh
and three, well, I was the head coach. What my name?
Mark Ramsey? What my name?
Speaker 7 (02:14:38):
Oh and two?
Speaker 2 (02:14:41):
Oh and three started owing three and still made the playoffs?
Speaker 7 (02:14:44):
Is it the Cults?
Speaker 2 (02:14:48):
It wasn't the Colts, But but I'm looking for the
name of a coach. Oh, you will move on. That's okay,
it's okay. The last time an NFL team made the
playoffs after starting oh and three, I was the head coach,
seam Oginger, what my name?
Speaker 5 (02:15:01):
It wasn't the Colts had cut like that wasn't?
Speaker 2 (02:15:03):
No?
Speaker 11 (02:15:04):
Okay, okay, Oh man, dude, I'm just gonna say, Eric, no,
that's not that's not him.
Speaker 2 (02:15:17):
I don't know, Bernie. This is a hard one, so
I'll give you guys a clue. It was actually the
Houston Texans, and it was back in twenty eighteen, and
this might have been the year there on hard knocks,
and this guy dropped more rough bombs than we're allowed,
is it O'Brien? It was Bill O'Brien. Nicely done, Bill O'Brien, who,
by the way, doing a whale of a job. He's
(02:15:37):
a Boston College beat, Michigan State beat, Georgia doing a
whale of a job. Our good job, guys, good job
all the way around. On the what kind of brand
new fool of my or you or who somebody? And
another rousing addition, of course, of what my name? And
we will certainly pick that up again next week as
(02:15:59):

the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. How We're
back on the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio Company
live from the Tarrat dot com studios here in Las Vegas,
just hours away from a full resumption of a what
should be a very spirited NFL Sunday two Monday night
(02:17:01):
games this week. By the way, so Baker Mayfield doing
swimmingly well in Tampa Bay and He even found time
to appear on a podcast recently, a podcast hosted by
former Major League Baseball pitcher Corey Klueber called Costady Club. Wow,
How clever is that club? Spell with klub Why not
(02:17:22):
everybody else in the world has a podcast? The world
needs one more podcast? And Baker Mayfield offered some interesting
quotes about Tom Brady's tenure with the team. I found
this to be very interesting. Now keep in mind, then,
Baker Mayfield has made it clear that he believed Brady's
methods worked well for him, and they were certainly successful
(02:17:44):
in Mayfield also made it clear he was not necessarily
trying to be critical Tom Brady. However, as part of
the narrative, he painted a picture of an organization that
may have been eager to embrace the more relaxed personality
like a Baker Mayfield or two years of Tom Brady.
There apparently were reports of Brady having some friction with
(02:18:04):
coaches over direction of the offense, and Brady has denied
those with Mayfield's comments basically underscore those claims. Apparently, Baker
Mayfield went on to say that the building was a
little bit different with Tom in there right. Obviously playing
wise Tom was different. He had everybody dialed in high
strung environment, so everybody was very stressed out for me
(02:18:27):
when I came in. They wanted me to just come in,
be myself, bring the fun back to football for some
guys who weren't having a much fun, but keep the
competition level up to where it is in. Mayfield again
went on to admit that he and Tom Brady have
very different personalities and he did hint it to further
attention after Brady's tenure and when he was asked about
the funniest story he ever heard regarding Tom Brady, he
(02:18:50):
discussed what he were called mind games that Brady might
play within the organization. He said, hear some stories that
if Brady didn't like a certain play call, he didn't
like it throughout the week and they still call it
in the game. There might have been a throwaway on
purpose or throwing it at the running backs feet or
the receiver's feet. So it was a long podcast, almost
(02:19:12):
an hour, and Baker Mayfield I think was measured with
his words. But the long and the short of it,
he painted a picture of quite a contrast with Tom Brady.
At the home in Tampa Bay. It was a very
stressed out, high strung environment. With Baker Mayfield at the home,
it's more of a fun, relaxed environment, although they still
believe that the competitive vibe is still very much there.
(02:19:36):
Coming up, we got Chris Prophetzsworld of Soccer, but first
we go back to our guy, Steve de Seger.

The Mets and Braves each won. The Braves are still

Minnesota was reigned out at Boston. Victories for Houston and Seattle.

Speaker 2 (02:21:40):
All right, thanks Steve. Well. American football foot b all
is what we cover here in mass this time of year,
but you can't completely ignore fut bl football played year
around around the world, and there's only some things in
(02:22:03):
the news you might want to learn about. It's while
we bring you Chrispfett's World of Soccer.
Speaker 9 (02:22:09):
The Greatest Goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drama.
Speaker 2 (02:22:25):
It's all here in this report from the World of Soccer.
Speaker 10 (02:22:29):
So MLS has given us little drama in the way
of things leading to the playoffs. There's about five weekends left,
including this one, and there's really only a slim outside
chance that Inter Miami will drop the Supporter's Shield, the
trophy for the most points in the regular season, they
might drop it to Cincinnati or La Galaxy, but such
a thing we require them to suffer a complete and
(02:22:49):
total meltdown. And with Lionel Messi finally back, it seems
he was off the bench against Atlanta not long ago,
I don't think there's going to.
Speaker 2 (02:22:58):
Be much threat to that. Soever.
Speaker 10 (02:23:00):
We've had the first week of Champions League and still
sifting through the results from that as we kind of
get a sense of who's taking the frontal positions in
group stages, which allows the world of soccer this week
to head into a topic that is no stranger to
soccer the sport, and has something that has become an
armchair fascination of mind, which is sports crime. In a
(02:23:22):
game of competition, equal playing fields, things that nature, the
desire to use off the field powers and advantages to
gain a higher edge over your other opponents oftentimes gets rewarded,
especially now in the world of sports being big for business, advertising,
gambling and everything else, and especially in the world of soccer,
(02:23:43):
a massive amount of money flowing in from sovereign nations,
and while the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and their sovereign
private investment fund has been the subject of a lot
of ink spilled, especially here in North America in regards
to our sports, but over the United Kingdom and in
the world of there is another subject that sticks out
quite well. Back in two thousand and eight, the Abu
(02:24:06):
Dhabi United Group purchased Manchester City. Since that time, Manchester
City has gone from a forgettable rival to one of
the most storied clubs in British soccer to a absolute powerhouse,
domineering the league for the larger part of fifteen years
here now with six titles coming in their reign since
the Abu Dhabi investment for over the last four years straight,
(02:24:29):
winning three FA Cups, six League Cups and the title
of the UEFA Champions League in twenty twenty three. However,
it's been no secret for a long time that the
finances of Manchester City in regards to their ownership of
the United Arab Emirates and the Abu Dhabi United Group
have been sketchy to say the least, with a lot
of accusations coming that they are able to pay themselves
(02:24:52):
through their sponsorships which happened to be with the merit
owned companies, which means that Manchester City, unlike a lot
of other clubs is not really at the beheston mercy
of outside sponsorships, but rather Peter can pay Paul very
easily through moving money through an Emirate owned company like
Etihad Airways, one of their largest sponsorships, and pump money
(02:25:15):
directly into the pockets of Manchester City whenever they so
need it. The Premier League has been investigating this matter
since at least twenty eighteen, and this week everything came
to a head as the financial regulators of the league
brought before an independent tribunal in Britain a one hundred
and fifteen charges against Manchester City in regards to breaching
(02:25:40):
their financial regulations. It has been termed in British tabloids
the sports trial of the century, and this will not
be a small case to be sure. Although they would
like to have this done before the Premier League run
ends in twenty twenty five, we should expect at least
two to three months for these proceedings. At least Manchester
City has denied any wrongdoing and is fighting it tooth
(02:26:02):
and nail. In fact, is even going further than that,
not only denying doing but also challenging the Premier League
on the legality of its rules limiting competition. In Europe
there called competition laws. In the United States, they would
be antitrust laws, basically arguing that even if they were
guilty of these matters, these really shouldn't be here in
(02:26:25):
the first place, and they should be allowed to send
whatever money they so wish, that they shouldn't have to
be barred from being able to do business as they
so please, in particular objecting to what are called party
transaction rules, which restrict the use of associated businesses to
funnel money into a club's finances.
Speaker 2 (02:26:42):
Like Manchester City is being accused of.
Speaker 10 (02:26:45):
However, that is a very anarchist interpretation of what makes
a sports league. Everyone has to play by the same rules,
and while the Premier League has never been one to
really care about trying to enforce things like a salary
cap or measures we might find in North America to
help level the playing field, there are still rules that
(02:27:05):
every club is expected to follow in order to compete
in these competitions, and there has never been anything unfair
about that. All in all, we have thirty five charges
for failing to cooperate with the Premier League's investigation over
a five year period. Fifty four for failure to provide
accurate financial information between two thousand and nine and twenty eighteen,
(02:27:27):
fourteen for a failure to provide accurate details for player
and manager payments from twenty nine to twenty eighteen. Five
for a failure to comply with YUEFA financial fair play
rules between twenty thirteen and twenty seventeen. Separately, YUEFA had
actually placed a ban on Manchester City for from their
level of play, which Manchester City was able to appeal
(02:27:47):
back in twenty twenty and seven for breaching Premier League
Profit and sustainability rules from twenty fifteen to twenty eighteen.
Making up your total of one hundred and fifteen. This
seems like a lot to throw at it, and it is.
I would be hard pressed to see Manchester City getting
off of all of these charges considering what is at
stake here and what is at stake really is a
(02:28:08):
consensus issue among Premier League clubs right now. It is
important to say that Everton has been faced with about
three different single charges over some of these same exact
rules in regards to irregularities and its finances, and has
been hit twice so far in regards to points deductions,
(02:28:29):
and there is a prevailing feeling among not just fans,
but the sports intelligentia and perhaps even club officials themselves
that if one charge can do that to Everton, how
are we going to sit here and suggest that one
hundred and fifteen charges against Manchester City should only amount
to not much. It would be disastrous to not punish
(02:28:51):
Manchester City severely, assuming they're able to The Premier League
is able to get most of these charges through On
the other side, I don't know if I'm going all
the way to nuclear option, which has been suggested by
several people watching this cage, which would be that Manchester
City would be expelled from the Premier League and probably
the English Football League altogether for all of these infractions.
Speaker 2 (02:29:11):
I don't see that happening.
Speaker 10 (02:29:13):
I would be hard pressed to see something like a
relegation for Manchester City happening. I'm not sure what bands
would be able to.
Speaker 2 (02:29:21):
Be enforced at this point.
Speaker 10 (02:29:23):
However, I don't know if a points deduction over a
couple of years would really be something that rocks the
boat either and satisfies a lot of people for basically
the fact that Manchester City has been getting away with
it for a really long time. There's a phrase, I
love Bernie. Pigs get fed, hoogs gets slaughtered. And for
(02:29:44):
a very long time, Manchester City has been brazenly getting
away with a lot of questions as to how it
finances all of its operations, how it is able to
repeatedly send out huge contracts to managers, to players and
to bring in some of the heftiest trends out there.
And for a lot of clubs in the Premier League
they've taken notice and they have probably have no love
(02:30:07):
for Manchester City how it does business or how or.
Speaker 2 (02:30:11):
What its effect on the league has been.
Speaker 10 (02:30:13):
It will be interesting to see because in my mind
there's only one question here, is Manchester City allowed to
break these laws or not? And there are probably a
lot of clubs who, even though they don't have the
evidence in front of them, would probably tell you today yes,
yes they have and they should be punished. But it's
up for the tribunal to decide at this point and
(02:30:33):
both parties hopefully will then adhere to whatever their ruling
happens to be. It's interesting to note that when Manchester
City got off UWEIFA charges on an appeal, it was
over a matter of time limit on when those charges
could be brought and acted upon. The Premier League has
no such time limit on their charges. We'll keep an
(02:30:54):
eye on this case burning because it is indeed the
sports case of the century. One of the biggest clubs
in the world and one of the wealthy is simply
being asked to play by the same rules and for
decades not doing so, according to charges being leveled against
them by their league. We'll see you next time on
the World of Soccer.
Speaker 2 (02:31:13):
Actually a real thing. I mean, there's a rumor that
Man City could face the threat of relegation if they
were found guilty of these serious rule breaches, although legal
minds think that will not come to that. Still something
worth watching coming up. We wrap up the show. What
a week, What a day that Shohyotani had, and what
(02:31:35):
a season he has had? What more can you say? Well,
I actually have a couple things I can say. I'm
Bernie Fraddle. We're company live from the Las Vegas Fox
Sports Radio, TIREC dot Com Studios. Keep it locked. You're
listening to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.
All right, wrap it up on the Bernie Frattle Show.
Fox Sports Radio. Before I go any further, I want
(02:31:55):
to thank my broadcast team back in Los Angeles. They've
been with me since eleven pm Pacific time on Friday night.
Check that Saturday night. That would be Steve di Seger
on the updates, Mark Ramsey, our technical producer, and Shay Morgngard,
our executive producer. Great job, great teamwork, guys, excellent job
on what kind of brand new fool you? And what
(02:32:16):
my name? That's how we keep the show on the air,
glued together with our team. It's been quite a week
for Shoho Tani. It was quite a Thursday night. It's
been quite a season, wasn't it supposed to be a
rehab season? And so you ask yourself, after all the accolades,
(02:32:36):
after all the highlights, after all the record setting, what
more can you say? There actually is some things more
you can say, because the more you peel back the onion,
the more you realize how incredibly sensational what Shoheo Tani
has done is even, yes, that much more sensational. That's
(02:32:56):
the department of redundancy department. For instance, let's just talk
about Thursday night. He had ten RBIs. Ten RBIs had
never happened from the leadoff spot in the history of baseball.
There have been sixteen double digit games RBI performances from
leadoff spot in the history of Major League Baseball, but
(02:33:17):
only won ten RBI. That was Shoheo Tani. So Shoheo
Tani wasted no time in getting to fifty to fifty,
fifty home runs, fifty stolen bases, the first player to
ever do it in history. But what more can you say?
I'll tell you what more can you say? Of the
six previous players who got to the forty forty club,
(02:33:38):
Odani got to fifty to fifty faster, then four of
the six got to forty forty. Can you imagine that
Shohy in twenty twenty two became the only player in
Major league history to get thirty home runs in a game, pitch,
get fifteen victories on the mound, and strike out two
hundred players asap in the history of Major League baseball
(02:34:02):
in the same season. Otani will not win the four
straight VP this season only because Aaron Judge had sixty
two home runs back in twenty twenty two, or he'd
be honest way to do it. By the way, Otani
will be the MVP in the National League. He'll be
only the first player in history to win back to
back MVPs in different leagues. Did it the American League
(02:34:22):
in twenty twenty three. Now he'll do it in the
National League in twenty twenty four. I know you're thinking,
Frank Robinson, he also had an MVP in each league,
but he didn't do it back to back. What Shohei
Otani has done defies logic completely. And this was supposed
to be, again, a rehab season. But let me tell
(02:34:44):
you what this season also represents. It's the season following
the It's the season following Otani's opportunity to quote get
the bag. Right. We all know the contract he just got.
But when you go back act ten twelve years in
Major League Baseball, some of these astronomical contracts were paid,
(02:35:06):
you realize how unusual what Otani is doing now, because seldom,
if ever, frankly never does a player get paid break
the bank and then come out the following year and
have a big year. Typically they fall backward. You don't
believe me, Aaron Judge. Last year was the first year
of his MEGA deal. His batting average dropped forty four
points for twenty twenty two. Yes, he's making up for
(02:35:28):
it this year, but the year after getting the bag,
even Aaron Judge dropped. How about Bryce Harper, He didn't
exactly exceed expectations until his third season when he won
the MVP. Mookie Betts he got the bag, and then
in twenty twenty was the COVID season pandemic year. He
played well but he didn't go crazy. But his first
full season twenty twenty one, Mookie hit a career low
(02:35:50):
two sixty four after getting the bag. Albert Poolhols fell
off a cliff. You know he did. Garrett Cole took
four years until he exceeded the expectations when he won
the Cy Young Award after getting the bag. Jacob Degram
last time he was healthy was twenty nineteen three. Injury
riddled seasons with the Mets ends up in Texas, you
(02:36:11):
get the drift. Even Max Scherzer, who's dal with Washington
was considered to be worth it, had the most losses
for a season in his career The following year after
getting the big deal. Even shortstops Corey Seger, Fernando Tatis,
Francisco Lindor, Trey Turners, Andre Bogart's Manny Machado. Every one
of them had a bad year after getting the bag
(02:36:32):
the year before. All that does is make what O'tani's
epic season has been that much more epic. By the way,
Mushadow even lost his job to Fernando Tatis, who lost
his job to doping, congratulates to show, Hey, he's gonna
do it for the Bernie Frater Show, but keep it
locked up. Next the Great Andy Furman on Fox Sports Radio.
