Speaker 1 (00:01):
You want experience during your football season, well, buckle up,
sweet cheeks. We've got all the experience in the world.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
This is I Want Your Flex with Dan Byer and
Mike Harmon.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
Mike and Dan break down everything you need to set
your lineups, from position rankings.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
To starts and sins.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
The guys help you make those hard decisions. And now
let's get your flex on. Here's Dan Bayer and Mike Harmon.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
It is I Want Your Flex and the Russell Wilson
erap maybe back. He is Mike Harman, I'm Dan Bayer,
He and Roddy as our executive producer. Fun week here.
We'll look back at week eight coming up later this
week on our next podcast episode. It's gonna be a
lot of misery loves Company. We'll just keep it that
way because it was a tough weekend for our teams
(00:53):
in the National Football League. But we're not going to
focus on the Seahawks, the Bears, or the Jets. We
are going to focus on to start. Why not just
focus on the end of the week. We'll start there
with the Steelers and Giants playing on Monday Night football.
What we usually do in our weekly recap MIC and
is the Russell Wilson eraw back now with the Pittsburgh Steelers,
(01:14):
because second straight week at least seemed pretty darn efficient
for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
I'm gonna say, just as a I like storylines to
go sideways, when he ran parallel to the line of
scrimmage and came up short giving the Giants the ball
back and late in the game, I really wanted the
Giants to score and then eventually beat him, just on
principle for all of these going back to last week,
(01:40):
with all the oh look at the moon balls or
whatever else. Okay, that it's a fifty to fifty ball,
which is good, right, all right? Motivated George Pickens after
being made fun of the entire week before and castigated
in the city of Pittsburgh, he came out and played well.
He did again on Monday Night four for seventy four,
the long of forty three.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Thing.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
He got some big play capabilities. That's one thing Russ does, right.
You remember the time in Seattle and even with Denver.
While you know there weren't the wins in Denver, there
were times where he could put the ball up for
grabs and make a big play and you saw that
a few times in the win over the Giants put
the ball in Harm's way a.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Couple times as well.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
But I think the bigger thing beyond Russell Wilson is
the fact that you know they're relying on the run
game again, and Najie Harris is on a bit of
a heater nineteen carries one hundred and fourteen yards. I
would be remiss if I didn't go back to pickings
just for a second, because they did get screwed on
the touchdown. How many times can you hop through an
end zone? Like if he hopped from the twenty all
(02:41):
the way through, would that have not counted if he
only did it on one leg because he sprained his
ankle or something.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
Yeah, No, you're right. If two feet he goes one knee,
they shouldn't say right or left.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
Yeah, And in the rules it says both feet, which
is just a body part, So which is just they
will hop on the same foot twice, it doesn't.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Count, I believe. Gosh, now, I'm this is dated. Don't worry, Ian,
this is way past your time. It was either Philip
Epps of the Packers or Leo Lewis of the Vikings,
but it happened in the Metrodome where someone hopped one
legged in the nineteen eighties, basically trying to stay in
bounce Mike and I can't remember who it was, but
(03:25):
it was one of those smaller wide receivers from the
NFC Central back then. It was either a Packer or
a Viking. It was either Leo Lewis or it was
Philip Epps. But to the point of just yeah, hopping
across and doing what he could do, I just yeah,
two feet, that's one two. If happens to be the
same foot, why not. I will say the Steelers did
get a nice break on the punt return. It was yeah,
(03:46):
so that does even out in the scorebook sort of
ways kind of, But yeah, I agree with you on
the pickt.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
But in a game where they called, they had sixteen
penalties accepted. That means you were flagging a lot of
things along the way. And obviously sp split screen experience.
Being as we broadcast in La on air with Smith
for our evening show, I had the World Series game,
the Lakers Suns, and the football game all rolling up
(04:17):
at once, so like head on a swivel.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
So my next bit sore.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
But yeah, that play just absurd to me how that's
not cold when we talk about protections of players or
whatever else. But on we go on the other side,
you know, an awful lot of love for Tyrone. Tracy
twenty carries one hundred and forty five in the score,
including the long forty five yard sprint, but into concussion
(04:40):
protocol in the post, so.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
We'll keep an eye on that. But you know, for.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
All of the hand ringing of the Giants and Daniel
Jones moving the ball well down the stretch, and then
the most inopportune of plays right the right tackle being
a turnstyle TJ Watt striped fumble there, and then the
interception where he overthrows Devin Singletary, who's in for Tracy
(05:05):
at that point for the game ceiling interception took away
from any positives you might have had there. So you
celebrate Tracy, you celebrate neighbors, and you roll on from there.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Yeah, neighbors and other nice thirteen targets. The only thing
that I just am am concerned about with the Giants
is the well there are a lot of concerns, but
it is the offensive line, sure, and they did invest
it in the offseason, but obviously without Andrew Thomas. It's a
completely different sort of deal. I wouldn't mind having Tracy,
(05:41):
wouldn't have mind having neighbors. You had talked about Wandale
Robinson a bunch earlier in the season when he was available,
but Darius Slayton now seems to be fairly capable. None
of those guys are are awful plays in deeper leagues.
It's just a matter if Daniel Jones is gonna airmailiure
(06:02):
or not, and if he's going to even have time
to be able to make those throws.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
Well, and even further, something Smith and I talked about.
You can find the full discussion in the podcast world.
But suffice to say, I mean, because of his contract,
they've got an out at the end of the year,
plus the insurance on injury and you know what becomes
activated in whatever else. I'm wondering how much longer we
see Daniel Jones.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
M hm.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
That's a fair point, right, because he's got a dead cap.
I think of next year of like twenty two million,
and we are doing a little of this. But the
insurance is if he got hurt, like they know, owe
him like twenty five and so at this point when
you're two and six. Look the division. You got Washington
up top. The Eagles are starting to show signs of life.
The Cowboys are spinning their wheels, but realistically, you're a
(06:48):
two and six squad. To your point, the offensive line
with no Thomas has no chance. So you know what,
at this point, should it be Tommy Cutlets.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Or Drew Locke?
Speaker 3 (06:59):
I was gonna say, this is music to the ears
of Drew Locke. He's gotta love this great.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
Sorry, Drew, Hey, you get to be a quarterback for
a couple of weeks though.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Yeah, it's all yours. Go ahead, take control. He Seattle
wanted him back. New York paid him more than what's
the c X or we're willing to keep them, so
they have fun with it. But I do think that
there's the cupboard isn't bare when it to the Giants players.
There there are other teams in the league that I
(07:29):
look at, and you know, Tennessee for example, like if
you don't have Tony Pollard, there's no point in playing
anybody right now. And so at least the Giants have
two or three guys that you're like, okay, this could
be serviceable.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
You can still at least put like, hey, Slighton's still
going to be a three.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
Yeah for a lot of a lot of folks, and
obviously curious to see what they do with the quarterback
position in the weeks ahead. But yeah, absolutely, it's not
devoid of of opportunity there.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Even with the emergence of Russell Wilson. They may have
as many guys as the Steelers have that you'd want
to play.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
So so makeause Steelers because Wilson's still going to be
a high end two is probable and maybe a bye
week fill in, injury, fill in whatever. I mean, it's
are you trusting it? I'm not, because you know, again
he got screwed on the pickings.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
I mean, that's insane.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
But overall, I'm not expecting him to roll up, you know,
to seventy eight with multiple touchdowns on a given week.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
My big you talked about Russell Wilson's running ability. You
have the fumble that that you that his that used
to be a portion of his game that is is
gone away with time, which naturally it would, and I
don't think that it's going to come back. So there's
(08:50):
not anything that you could really really hope for any
sort of run that you would get or a double
digit rushing total from Russell Wilson on the season, to me,
is going to be a plus.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
Just that third down play, Like there's one of those
all right fields had been available, It's an opportunity to
go seal the win. Yeah, And instead Russ looked like
he was running. He looked like gian Carlos Stanton running
around third base when ti Oscar Hernandez threw him out
in the World Series game on Monday night. Why is
he running? Same thing with Russ? And then he started
(09:25):
running running down the line of scrimmage. I'm like, that's
not helping anything. This is like the old electric football
game where the guy would turn and you were screwed
because the play was over.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
It's like, no turn back that way. How do I
shake it to make it turn us back up field?
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Well, I'll say this about Justin Fields, who was the
emergency quarterback, because he is diged up in practice this
past week. There will be a point where there will
be a package.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
I don't think that they wanted to do it in
Russell Wilson's first game. I think that kind of undermined
the decision of Mike Tomlin. But now that it seems
like Wilson is entrenched as the starter, I think you
can say, all right, let's put a package in, or
let's do something goal line wise or figure something out.
It won't happen with Fields hurt, but I think that
(10:12):
now in these last two weeks, they're six and two.
Now you got a bye week coming up in week nine,
I think we could see that down the line. Not
that that makes Justin Field's fantasy relevant, but just for
the Steelers as a whole, I think it's something that we'll.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
See extend some drives, get some creative plays mixed therein,
because now you have to account for him to pull
up and throw and yeah, all of that.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
The option kind of system comes in.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
And I'll say this, and it's not to pile on
and it's not to make it Jets talk again, but uh,
Jets show Ian also our resident Jets fan on staff,
the Steelers are what the Jets should have been. When
you look at maybe not exact, but built on defense,
at a quarterback that expands your game a little bit,
(11:00):
gives you a threat, takes advantage of your weapons. That's
what the New York Jets I think wanted to be
maybe not exact mirror, but I think close to it.
And one is six and two and the other is
two and six.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
It is disappointing.
Speaker 5 (11:17):
I I think you're right, Dan, I built on the
defense is true.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
I just don't all you wanted was Aaron Rodgers to
improve your quarterback play, right. Yeah, it didn't need to
come in there and be superman after the Achilles injury.
Maybe last year would have hoped. But honestly, if you
would have saw him play the year before, you shouldn't
have had those expectations. You just like, we just need
comparable quarterback play and with our defense, we should be
(11:42):
able to do something.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
Yeah, but just to be fair, I feel like Rogers
has given them average quarterback play. He hasn't been great.
He hasn't he hasn't even been necessarily good, but he's
been at least average. And yeah, I guess the hope
is that the team around him would be good enough
to to you know, I'll pull some wins together with that,
But no, that's not the case. But yeah, the Steelers
(12:04):
are and I think it has to do with coaching.
I think that's a big part of it. Is the
defense and coaching. It needs to be a well coached
team for for an average quarterback to be able to
stand step in and then and then raise your floor.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
I guess there's your headline ian the Steelers who are there?
Who the Jets want to be? That's what you can
put in our tweet when.
Speaker 5 (12:24):
And I'll shed a tear while I type it.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
There you have it.
Speaker 4 (12:29):
But the other thing that I really liked from the game, uh,
they announced the whole game that they're going to do
with Cincinnati in the Simpsons. Yeah, it's a it's a
whole whole bit that they're going to do. I'll find
the actual matchup because I think I think it was
Cincinnati and Dallas was the matchup they're going to do
(12:53):
it with and do like Simpson's overlays and commentary with
a bunch of bits that they put together. So that
that said, they did a great graphic over the Steelers
quarterback position where here's justin fields that are in a driveway,
and then Russell Wilson sneaks sinks into the short of
(13:14):
the hedges like the famous Homer same yeah, and then
when it was his time to come and start, he
re emerges from the Hedges. So I thought that was
a pretty good bit to add that in. But yeah,
it's gonna be Cincinnati and the UH and the Cowboys
in a few weeks.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
Time, something to look forward to.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
If you're into that sort of stuff, well.
Speaker 4 (13:35):
It's either that or we go back into Andy's room.
What Toy the Toy Story game that they did last year.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
That's what it was. Yeah, see, these are all over
my head. I mean, Brody's only three, so I'm sure
at some point I'll be locked in. But there's been
no need to watch the Nickelodeon.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Game or see.
Speaker 4 (13:56):
I think those would be great, the SpongeBob game and
the Toy Story game, Like, I think they've been absolute wins.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
I was just gonna laugh it off and pretend I
knew what you were talking about. But I'm like, why
fake it?
Speaker 2 (14:07):
Yeah, it's all good.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
You know, you'll get there completely.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
Because that you'll get the Broadster into football that way.
Hey look, look, Buzz light years.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
He's still on this Dolphins kick, you know, like he's
still for it. I'm like, hey, guess what to us back? Yeah,
I means, yeah, didn't help the Dolphins on something.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
No, not so much.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
But at least they were better. At least they were
better in that aspect.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
Start again.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Yeah, yeah, a lot of guys are startable. They just
didn't get the win and uh, which is unfortunate. They
had a double digit lead in that game, but maybe
not the the crazy numbers that you would have hoped for.
And Raheem Mostert's you know, getting some run as well,
which had to be a little bit frustrating for eight
chan owners. But we'll have to we have to wait
(14:57):
and see when that Tyreek Hill breakout game is. But yeah,
he was. He brought out some Seahawks stuff that I
got him, and it was all about the Seahawks. And
then the other day, you know, we're like football, Yeah,
touchdown Dolphins. You know, I'm like, what what are we doing?
He still can't shake it. So all right, He's Mike Carmen,
I'm Dan Byer, that is Ian Roddy. This is I
(15:18):
want your Flex. There's an interesting trend that's going on
in the NFL right now, and it has to do
with one specific position, and that position is very, very
important to your fantasy football team. We're going to talk
about it next year, and I want your flex. Welcome
back to I want your flex. He is Mike Carmen.
I'm Dan byer Ian Roddy is the executive producer. You
(15:42):
want to run these numbers past you, Mike, or these
names and numbers if you will. We're through eight weeks
of the NFL season, by the way, forty nine Ers
and Steelers having a bye in week nine. Michael, have
your waiver wire pickups coming up in our final segment
of this podcast. NFL's leading rusher, no surprise, Derrick Henry
nine hundred and forty six yards through eight games this season.
(16:05):
Sakuon Barkley seven hundred and sixty six yards on the ground.
They those two running backs in Joe Mixon of the
Houston Texans are the only running backs right now averaging
more than one hundred yards per game. You have Josh
Jacobs of the Green Bay Packers, who is fourth in
rushing six hundred and sixty seven yards. Another name to
(16:28):
even throw in there, JK. Dobbins of the Chargers five
thirty five. He's ninth in the NFL. Mike, those are
all running backs, those are all veteran running backs, and
those are all running backs who changed teams this offseason.
Do you see a correlation to their success in their
new places or is this just all happenstance.
Speaker 4 (16:47):
No, I think it's absolutely it's we wanted you and
this is how we're gonna build our squad. This is
how we're gonna be better. I mean, for Baltimore, they
always tried it, but they had a bunch of Anteloy Price.
I mean you mentioned Jak Dobbins, he couldn't stay healthy.
Gus Edwards also with the Chargers. Guess what, he's not
healthy right now on injured reserve. So to bring in
(17:09):
Derrick Henry and allow him to escape Tennessee, knew there
was some tread left on the tires. Look, they've also benefited.
And we talk about the offensive line, probably more than most,
and I'm sure people throw things at me when I
start talking about the cohesiveness or lack thereof of.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
A starting five.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
Ronnie Stanley's healthy and has played something Baltimore also has
not had very much of the last couple of years,
which means for Lamar Jackson, the passing game, you added Flowers,
I mean, you've done some things right the tight ends
and Mark Andrews in the last couple of weeks has
come to life. But all of that to say, for
Derrick Henry, a better time. Saquon Barkley, well, we knew
(17:49):
he'd be in a good spot, right offensive lineman, even
with Kelsey retiring that you'd still have good run Green Bay.
You had expectations for the squad. So Josh Jacob getting
away from Las leaving Las Vegas not quite the same
as the movie, which was really a very sad. I
don't think I need to revisit that space again with
(18:10):
Nick Cage. But all of that to say, and then
Harbaugh with the Chargers, right, he wants to run the football.
That's his identity. Now you've paid Justin Herbert to go
and do big things like he did against New Orleans
and make some big throws, but ultimately, you know running
the football is going to be huge. So yeah, I
think it's all the identities of these squads and just
(18:31):
saying all right, we're gonna do this and then when
you can mix and match, you know. And to finish
with Joe Mixon is that they've got the luxury of
the downfield passing game with CJ. Stroud, which we know
still is missing parts. Right, Nico Collins miss time due
to injury and our guy, our poster child. We're holding
up signs, standing up saying take Dell more, take tell.
(18:51):
But you know, for Joe Mixon, but for the injuries
sustained against the Bears on the hip drop tackle. I mean,
you're talking about a guy who'd be fight Henry at
the top of the boards at this point.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
Yeah, it's did you use the phrase double down? Because
that's how I look at some of this, So I
don't mean to copycat with you.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
No.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
I may have, but right now I have no memory.
Speaker 4 (19:13):
It was like Will Ferrell when he debates Carville in
Old School where he has this great two minute monologue
and then basically a blackout scenario, doesn't even remember what
he said.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
Well, the Ravens are doubling down on their running game.
It was fine because Lamar Jackson picked up some slack.
When you look at the rushing numbers through week eight,
and this is overall, and some guys have played more
games than others, Lamar has played eight, but Lamar is
still tied for thirteenth in the NFL and rushing. Yeah,
(19:47):
and so that number probably wouldn't have been too different
of what it was if this was last season. But
now you have Derrick Henry on top in Baltimore, and
he's again on top by a large margin. Saquon is
one hundred and eighty yards behind him. A Saquon has
played in one last game, but still you need a
(20:10):
one hundred and eighty yard game to pull even. And
Derrick Henry would be almost two hundred and fifty yards
more than third place Jordan Mason right now. And they
both have appeared in eight games that have had similar
number of attempts. So the point is the Ravens are
like we were, We were fine, but we're gonna double
(20:30):
down green Bay. At the running back position, they were fine.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
But A Dillon and Aaron Jones.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
Yeah yeah, Aaron Jones had the great playoff game against
the Cowboys. In fact, that was critical of Green Bay
for moving on from him. But Josh Jacobs has brought
a presence, has stayed healthy. Aj Dillon hasn't a you know,
Aaron Jones and his new digs in Minnesota is tied
with Lamar Jackson, so he's you know, had his role there,
(20:57):
but Minnesota didn't have hasn't had much of a running
game over the last couple of seasons either, So he
slides in there. It's the team saying, Okay, if we're
going to do this, we're going to do this right.
And it is so refreshing to see running backs actually
have value. And because the other thing with fantasy and
(21:18):
I benefited from this. I lost my fantasy game this
past weekend, but I was helped in some point games
that we do with Ceedee Lamb's touchdowns against the forty
nine ers. There's no backdooring running back stats. So like
when your back is going and Saquon could be having
a greater year if Jalen Hurts wouldn't score all their touchdowns,
(21:41):
but when your running backs are going, like there's there's
something honest. It's like an honest day's work. You're not
getting cheap, you're not getting back ends. You're not catching
five passes on a drive when you're down by seventeen points.
So it's close enough where you're still in the game,
but not close enough where the defense really cares. There's
something of value with running backs, and it's actually been
(22:03):
really refreshing this season.
Speaker 4 (22:04):
Yeah, I think you know, the last thing on Baltimore
specifically is I think the taste left in the mouth
after they abandoned the run altogether in their playoff loss sticks,
which is why you see more Derek Henry fifty four
yards to one thousand already here as we go into
week nine, which is really kind of frightening. But the
(22:27):
idea of just the run game in general in the philosophy,
and we've talked about it a little on the pod before,
but for those new welcome in the idea of just
the way football's changed a little bit now, Ceedee Lamb,
he's now in the Rob Gronkowski Travis Kelsey. I don't
know how the hell that guy is that wide open
when he's clearly the one, one A and number two
(22:52):
receiver for a team all wrapped up into one's That
two guys running into each other in the secondary kind
of helps as well for Ceedee.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
Lamb as Yeah, no exactly.
Speaker 4 (23:03):
Hey, it was a beautifully thrown lab ball from Dak
Prescott there and what was a very odd night for
him otherwise, which we'll get to. But the the idea
just in each possession, I think is being treated with
a little more love, and long protracted drives using the
run game are okay, versus we've got to go and
(23:27):
shoot for the downs instead of all right, let's change
that expected value of a drive to where we end
with field goal kickers, and so many of them can
hit from fifty and beyond with such regularity that the
run game comes back into vogue because now we're all right,
let's pick up the third and two get the run
instead of a couple of years ago. You can go
(23:49):
find a lot of third and shorts where you guys
are still winging the ball around, and even a flat
pass is not a guaranteed thing in this NFL. The
way you go in the press, cover and defend those
kind of circumstances. So yeah, I think fundamentally we've changed
the game. And for me, being you know, old, as
we've relayed time and time again, three yards and a
(24:11):
cloud of dust is a wonderful thing for me. Back
when Walter Payton and Kurt with the Sea Warner ruled the.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
Earth absolutely number twenty eight again, I wore my Kurt
Warner Seahawks jersey for my third and a fifth grade pictures,
so I must not have grown much in that time.
The fourth grade mic was Mike Dan Marino, No nice
did doing, and they were the jerseys with the team
name on the front. Oh sure, so it said Seahawks
twenty eighth Dolphins thirteen.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
Is that's the Sears catalog one, of course, because I
had a bunch of those. Yes, yes, little Mike Harmon
running around with his uh Raiders jersey.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
H Do you even know what we're talking about, Ian
when we talk about Sears catalog? No?
Speaker 5 (24:55):
But I mean it sounds like it's like just like
a cheap knockoff version of jerseys which you can get
for seas nowadays.
Speaker 2 (25:01):
Yeah, that's just kind of that that.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
Yeah, these were just kids ones, and they wouldn't give
you like the They wouldn't They would have the star player,
you know, for that team, but it wouldn't say the
actual player's name on the back. Or but you know,
as I said, you know, Mike probably had a Bears
Walter Payton won Beard.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
I had my uh Mike ken Stabler. I had my
little brother, for whatever reason, decided he was going to
antagonize us all by wearing a Linn Dickey Packers jersey around.
Speaker 3 (25:37):
Yeah, as a little one.
Speaker 4 (25:39):
And then I had an affinity for the Eagles for
a while, So I had a Jaworski and I actually
had an Eagles bike with the logo.
Speaker 2 (25:47):
Yeah, tricked out bike. Yeah, it was cool.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
I don't want to steal Ian's thunder because we are
going to get back to Sears Catalog's jersey in a sec.
You told us before we started the podcast and we
were kind of throwing ideas out. What were you saying
about draft strategies as it comes to our running back conversation?
Speaker 2 (26:06):
Yeah, I was.
Speaker 5 (26:07):
I don't know where I heard this or read it
somewhere earlier, but it's about how this year you can
see that you know, there's different strategies you go into
the season with when you draft in your fantasy leagues,
and one of the main strategies that a lot of
people like to do is RB zero or zero RB.
It's called a few different things, but it's where you
kind of just focus on receivers and pass catchers tight
(26:29):
ends early on in the draft, and then worry about
running backs later. And if you look at how that's
worked out this year, it varies by year, but this
year specifically, that strategy has not worked.
Speaker 2 (26:40):
Out at all.
Speaker 5 (26:40):
The people who have been doing the best across the
board in fantasy or the people who doubled down on
running backs early. So you know, it might be pairings
like Baise Hall and Derrick Henry something like that. Those
are the teams that are doing the best as opposed
to you know, maybe you got lucky with mid round
running backs like you know Chewba Hubbards sticks out as someone.
But for the most part, those run back in the
mid rounds have kind of failed.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
Yeah, they failed. Even your top wide receivers, you know,
a Tyreek Hill not having two up probably hasn't worked.
Speaker 2 (27:09):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
You know if you did a all take Pooka Nakua
and Davante Adams on the way back, that has been
miserable for you.
Speaker 2 (27:16):
Someone did it. Someone did it.
Speaker 3 (27:18):
Yeah, absolutely, It does make a make a lot of sense.
Speaker 4 (27:21):
Well, yeah, I mean, and you think of the number
of committees that are out there, add the quarterbacks who run,
you know, and think about Derrick Henry. He benefits from
the versatility of Lamar Jackson, but there's going to be
point opportunities that are taken away from his legs and
go on down the line. You know, forty nine ers
(27:42):
can run anybody in there. Now, Mason's banged up, so
Guarendo becomes the guy. As we'll get too deeper, into waivers.
But you know, it's there are a lot of teams
whereas you know, the hot hand approach like they want
to do in Tampa and going. Of course they have
to because everybody's hurt. But it's that kind of thing
that you go down. So yeah, I'd be curious to
(28:04):
see give it another two or three weeks as we
get really into the meat of the season. I mean,
we're there, but you know, now it's the war of
attrition from week eight nine on.
Speaker 5 (28:14):
Give it a few few more weeks to average out.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
I feel like I would alienate the younger portion of
our audience, Mike, but I'm gonna do it anyway.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
Let's go, what do we got.
Speaker 3 (28:29):
I've brought up a nineteen eighties Ish Sears catalog. It's
got to be nice. It's got to be nineteen eighties ish.
Speaker 4 (28:39):
No, No, you want to lay out what the Sears
catalog was in its importance.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
Oh so the Sears catalog ian was basically this twelve
hundred page monstrosity. No, it wasn't that many, but I
mean it was a lot. You know, you get this
enormous catalog from uh in the mail J C. Penny
as well, Ye was a big one for that, and
there was I would say about four pages. You could
(29:07):
get anything and everything in there, but there were about
four or five pages that were dealt that dealt with
sports clothes and sports clothes for kids. Would that be fair, mic.
Speaker 4 (29:18):
Yeah, And then you'd have it, you know, fifteen pages
of Star Wars stuff. And it was basically the extended
wish book. Yes, right and yes, But but to your point.
You know those cool ass pencils that you and I
love so much?
Speaker 3 (29:32):
Mm hmmm, And I've thought, yeah.
Speaker 2 (29:34):
Yeah, whenever they show up in my timeline, I smile
a little bit. I go one. My guy buyer has
these two. I mean, they were just cool.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
I still have a pack of Bears pencils my kids
bought me for a birthday. I won't sharpen them, just
on principle. I'm holding them on, you know, saving them
for quote like my mom for good.
Speaker 3 (29:52):
I spent sixty bucks in on NFL pencils from the
late nineteen eighties that I found on eBay. That's how
ridiculous this is.
Speaker 4 (30:02):
Some of those are rare though, Like some of those
packs didn't always include you know, the coloration right of
the light blue, you know, sometimes it was a white,
sometimes it was a light blue. Sometimes like for the
different teams, they changed out the colors. So there is
a rarity. Fit like a baseball car. This is like
a rarity.
Speaker 3 (30:21):
So I don't have the exact year that this catalog
is there, but what I can tell you is that
the forty nine Ers jersey is number sixteen.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (30:31):
I'm just gonna give you five quick numbers and then
we'll end this segment and we'll come back with Mike's
waiver wire picks. Do you want to play the guessing game? Mike?
Are you good with that? If I just give you
a team and a number? Yeah, okay, okay, we'll start
out easy, redskins number seven, Yes, absolutely, great, great selection.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
Old friend of the show.
Speaker 3 (30:57):
Okay, all right, what about this brown seventeen.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
That's Bernie.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
It's Brian Site.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
Oh see, was the first name to go through my head.
Damn it.
Speaker 3 (31:10):
It's all right, that's all right, No, no.
Speaker 4 (31:12):
I fooled myself. I went no Site. No, let's go
Bernie mainstream.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
Okay, Falcons ten.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
Falcons. Yeah, this is except Barkowski.
Speaker 3 (31:24):
It is Barkowski, Steve Barkowski. All right, I got two
of this is this is right already Bengals eighty is
that it is Collinsworth? He was available of this series.
How about that?
Speaker 2 (31:42):
Now here's a guy.
Speaker 3 (31:43):
Yeah, this guy all right? And finally and finally you
ready for this?
Speaker 2 (31:50):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Lions twenty Oh that's Billy Simms. Yeah he didn't. He
didn't fall for the bait of Sanders. It is Billy.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
I gotta I gotta take myself back into the time.
One Billy said was one of the nicest guys I
ever met.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
Oh he was, he's.
Speaker 4 (32:07):
Does the autograph signings or whatever. I met him years
ago and just started talking fun and excitement of his
college days and all the Lions.
Speaker 2 (32:17):
Well that era.
Speaker 3 (32:18):
It's funny because this had to be had to be
early eighties because the Seahawks still was Jim Zorn okay,
and Tommy Kramer was the Vices number nine what was
crazy is and the Jets was Richard todd All.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
You want to talk about a Lion's.
Speaker 3 (32:36):
Main Yeah, the Chargers obviously was Fouts, uh, George Rogers,
Saints thirty eight. So those are just some of the
some of the interesting names. Yeah, yeah, you gotta see these.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
I have to take a look at that.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
That's great. Final one from eighty six that had Marino
for the Dolphins and then Kurt Warner the Redskins. One
was Art Monk eighty one, Steelers sixteen had to be
Mark Malone and the Jets one was gast too.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
That's funny. All the guys you get to pick from
the Steelers, but there's the Mark Bull Good gotta do
the quarterback absolutely.
Speaker 3 (33:24):
Man Broncos l Way.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
Oh, that's so fun Yeah, that's it. That's my mission.
Speaker 3 (33:32):
Now.
Speaker 4 (33:32):
I gotta find someplace where those have been stored in
a warehouse for forty years.
Speaker 3 (33:38):
I hope people enjoy this podcast because I this this
has gone completely off the rails.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
It's so great.
Speaker 3 (33:45):
I know it's this is the way back. But when
you were going for school shopping or Christmas shopping and
you could pick jerseys, there was nothing like it. All right,
he is Mike Harmon, I'm Dan Byer. That's Ian Roddy.
Mike has is. Waiver Wire pickups four week nine. Niners
and Steelers are on buy. We'll talk about it next
year on I Want your Flags. All right, let's get
(34:06):
to the waiver Wire pickups four week nine. I know
that's why you're really here. He's Mike Carmen, I'm Dan Beyer.
Ian Roddy is here. After Mike does his waiver wire,
quick do a report card from week eight and that'll
be that. All right, Mike, do we need to pick
up this week?
Speaker 2 (34:19):
All right?
Speaker 4 (34:20):
Jumping right off, we got at the quarterback position, bo
Nicks twenty plus points three of his last four. He's
got the Baltimore secondary on tap. They're terrible in every way,
shape or form. We can do a full podcast on
how bad they've been, but we wont rams. After their
big performance against the Vikings and everybody getting healthy. Matthew
(34:41):
Stafford still available about two thirds of leagues. I benched
him in multiple leagues, and I feel oh so much
the fool. Although you know, McVeigh versus Flora seemed like
a pretty good matchup, didn't it. Jamis Winston, if you're
feeling a little plucky and desperate, again, only two teams
on by he might have been playing purty odds are
(35:01):
Russell Wilson was just there as a backup. So otherwise
we've got a bunch of guys that are in injury protocols,
So maybe Jamis gets a little bit of a look
going over three hundred yards here in his return, and
we can do the would have, should have, could have
been intercepted.
Speaker 2 (35:15):
Guess what.
Speaker 4 (35:16):
They weren't, much like Stafford's pass a few years ago
that sent them into the Super Bowl. Should it have
been picked? Yeah, it was, Guess what. That's why the
guy plays a defensive back position. He ain't catching it.
So Jamis might give. He gives as much as he
takes as we go, But an opportunity here difficult spot,
(35:37):
no question against a Stingy's Chargers d But if we're
looking for some help, that's why I'll skip straight to
the wide receiver position, because you go for targets as well.
Elijah Moore had twelve this week. But obviously Tillman is
going to be the guy everybody's seeking out available about
eighty to eighty five percent of leagues, depending on where
you're playing. Seven catches, ninety nine yards and two touchdowns
(36:00):
in the last two weeks. He's got twenty one targets,
so opportunity does not there. We look at McMillan because
we're trying to find value across our league. We're looking
at him a rising and getting a share of the
targets there in Tampa seven this last week. We told
you Rashad White would pick up some work in the
receiving game. He did there as well, so another guy
(36:23):
you could pare him with as well as you can
also look at Kate Atton. Ten targets, nine catches, eighty
one yards, two touchdowns on National tight End Day, which
was odd because guess what in my league's guys I
started tight ends were the only guys that didn't score.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
Although, yeah, so who was it?
Speaker 3 (36:41):
Who are the tight ends?
Speaker 1 (36:42):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (36:42):
Well, it really is just a lot of coal Comet
the gouss appointment. There you go, two guys in really
good spots, they're usually good.
Speaker 5 (36:54):
Do they just pick National tight End Day to be bad?
Speaker 4 (36:56):
I would say this for Comet also comes down to
I did like what he had to say about how
much he hated everybody this week at practice and being
lazy and complacent coming out of the bye week ahead
of their date against the Commanders.
Speaker 3 (37:12):
Good for you.
Speaker 4 (37:12):
At least someone had the g because DJ Moore asked
questions as well, but he was in the injury tent
when all the bad stuff happened. Cole Comet just even
cited that the the practice week was bad, So keep
an eye on that one as you go because it's
it's fun fodder when the Chicago guys start talking with
accents looking to fire their coaches. So there's your quarterback.
(37:35):
And then I hang a star on him because I
don't know what the details are at this point as
we're recording this, it sounds like Jordan love Of averted
major catastrophe with his groin injury. But Malik Willis has
played pretty well in his place and a date against Detroit,
and I love the Lions wherever you can pass on.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
The Lions, so I agree you have a buy in
week ten.
Speaker 4 (38:00):
Yeah, So for Malik Willis with the bye week ten,
maybe you give him another week because you pressed him
earlier and you pressed your luck and you didn't hit
the WAMMI early. See what I'm doing here Now I'm
going into nerd game shows. And then I don't think
they want to double down. See I pulled down your
double down line. See it all ties together in a
rich tapestry here, and I watch reflax. I mentioned Guarendo earlier.
(38:24):
Jordan Mason banged up a little bit and he's been
on had the little red Mark next to him the
last couple of weeks, but he had to leave that
Sunday affair. So guarndo with some hard running, some big opportunity.
He's available in about ninety five percent of leagues, which
is insane considering them out they run the football and
want to run the football. That his backup would be open,
(38:47):
Mason's backup would be open. And I know McCaffrey's out
there as a potential return here, but you got to
have the insurance.
Speaker 3 (38:55):
Sure, just cover your bases, especially with Christian McCaffrey in
the ramp up that they want to do with him.
It is no guarantee, even though they have gotten encouraging signs,
it's no guarantee everything's gonna be okay. So better to
be safe than sorry.
Speaker 2 (39:12):
And in general, what are they gonna do. They're gonna
They're gonna sell you on the positive, right.
Speaker 4 (39:16):
Sure, Ah, he's never coming back, he's done. No, that's
not what we do. You gotta sell hope, man, You
gotta sell hope.
Speaker 5 (39:22):
McCaffrey is on the Madden cover though, which makes me
believe he's not gonna be bad.
Speaker 2 (39:27):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (39:29):
I'll just I'll say this with the Lions game and
the Packers buying Week ten out of the gate. After
their bye, they're at your Bears Mike home against the Niners.
Dolphins come to town on Thanksgiving night, and then they're
at Detroit the next week, so those are then you're
that Detroit game is a Thursday night er in Detroit,
(39:52):
so then you'll have a week and a half break
as well. But for those for that four game stretch,
I think you're gonna I want to make sure you
have Jordan love Na.
Speaker 2 (40:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (40:03):
Yeah, by the way, you liked Bonix last week, and
he was one of your hot plays. Jalen Hurts a
nice success story. You like Kyler taking it to the
Miami Dolphins. He did absolutely that. You nailed the cold
source with Gino Smith completely shut down against the Buffalo Bills.
(40:26):
So yeah, kudos to you on some of your highlights.
You can point out more of the ones that you like,
but those are the ones that stood up for now.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
No, I appreciate it. Overall.
Speaker 4 (40:35):
I think it was a pretty good week. You know,
there were a couple of just big letdown situations. Really
thought you'd get some juice from that Bears offense coming
out of the bye week and DeAndre Swift's been fantastic,
the little jump over the defender move. I hope they
come up with some kind of trading card to commemorate that,
because I'd buy that picture. But you know, other than him,
(40:57):
it was a big letdown scenario for the offense overall,
and certainly Caleb Williams. He sent me home in two
Guillantine leagues, so uh, he was a guy I was
high on thinking might get ourselves a little bit of
a shootout in that one, but you know, they can't
all be gems. Also thought with the Miami return that
(41:17):
you'd have of Tua, that you'd have bigger efforts from
Waddle and from Tyreek Hill, while that didn't happen, so
you know, a little bit of a disappointment there once again.
Speaker 2 (41:30):
So yeah, it's it's it's hit and miss.
Speaker 4 (41:33):
Like we're at that point where you're you're trying to
figure out, you know, RB two's and secondary wide receivers
where you're gonna get any juice. And I don't mean
to pile on the jets. I really thought you'd get
some some love from Devonte Adams and pushed all in
on him, uh this week, much to my chagrin and Ians,
we got a whole lot of nothing in that game
(41:55):
against New England.
Speaker 3 (41:56):
How was Ian chagrin when it came to streaming defenses?
Speaker 5 (42:00):
My chagrin was decent this week on streaming defenses. It
was okay, we had the Chargers and the Texans were
the two. I came with the Chargers at eight points,
five sacks, so not too bad. But and then the
Texans finished with nine points, also five sacks, an interception
in a fumble recovery, but they did allow twenty points.
And then I also did recommend the Bears if Daniels
(42:22):
didn't play, which he did, so I hope you listen
to that, because they would have lost you three points
if you'd start them.
Speaker 2 (42:28):
They finished with the negative three negative three.
Speaker 5 (42:30):
Yeah, but Daniels did play, so that was the caveat,
don't start them with Daniels plays.
Speaker 3 (42:36):
Well, my caveat was non existent with the Jets because
I said there's no way that they can lose that
game to the New England Patriots, and they did. Don't worry,
it knocked me out of a survivor pool as well,
so I apologize again. I may have to just give
myself a banishment. By the way, if we get to
weeks thirteen and fourteen, you're going to be winning a
(42:56):
lot of money in your survivor pools. Maybe you could
do split pots, but we don't need to give one
every single week. I had a double pick week and
got burned by the Jets. My points of pelouza did
not cash out, although in my defense, guys, I didn't
think that we'd have a quarterback tapping out of a play,
and that's why Colts Texans was my points of palooza. Yeah,
super weird with Anthony Richardson doing that. I don't care
(43:20):
how tired you are. It's audible to a run play,
Geene Stick. It's like we're gonna call a run play anyway.
So I don't know why I tapped out. And my
Oasis song was who Feels Love? And it was going
to be Jordan Love. He felt his groin, so that
didn't work out. So a rough up for me. I'll
try to bounce back and be better in week nine.
Speaker 2 (43:42):
Oh, just crazy week overall watching the games.
Speaker 4 (43:45):
I'm at the point after eight weeks guys, I've I've
actually picked more winners against the spread than straight up.
Speaker 2 (43:51):
Yeah, I was just kind of odd.
Speaker 3 (43:54):
Yeah, I'm doing the same thing. I'm kind of I'm
all right against the red that uh yeah, straight up.
It's hasn't been as easy as it would seem.
Speaker 4 (44:05):
Yeah, But for the NFL this week, Dan, you know,
you had all these close games, which is what they want.
Doesn't mean they're good games.
Speaker 3 (44:13):
Yeah, outside of the Lions and Titans matchup and the
Eagles completely dominating, and that could be another topic for
another day. Everything was was kind of within pocket and
Bryce Young and that not a very good offense. According
to Shane Sean Payton, I'm paraphrasing, but hey, he didn't lie.
He didn't lie. Took a shot at poort Carolina in
(44:35):
the post game.
Speaker 2 (44:36):
But hey, play better.
Speaker 3 (44:39):
Yeah, that's that's all you gotta do.
Speaker 4 (44:41):
Well, I look and I've taken my shots at Sean Payton.
Now I'm recommending bo Nicks on a regular PA.
Speaker 3 (44:46):
Yes, right, you know.
Speaker 4 (44:48):
To give him his his just due and you to
take advantage of opportunities. But you know, in the end,
right now, Denver's a team and to take it into
real football for a moment, you're looking at maybe a
wildcard potential. The way things are shaken out, right, So
what are you gonna do. You're gonna put a bunch
of random crap on tape that people have to think about.
Speaker 3 (45:10):
I'll tell you what you mentioned it. We talk about
playoff droughts. Broncos have the second longest one in the NFL,
behind Ian's Jets. If the playoffs started today, the Broncos
would be at Buffalo for a wild card game in
a four to five matchup.
Speaker 2 (45:28):
O crazy?
Speaker 3 (45:28):
How about that? This would be your playoff picture. We'll
wrap up with this so you can even start the
music in Chiefs would be the top seed. Texans, the
two seed would be facing the Chargers. The Ravens would
be the sixth seed and be in Pittsburgh to face
the Steelers. He has the first place Steelers, and you'd
have the Bills and Broncos. So that would be the
(45:50):
AFC picture. As for the NFC, Green Bay would be
at Arizona in a four or five matchup. The Falcons
would be home to the Vikings, and then the Eagles
would take on the Commanders, with the Lions having the
first overall seed. Yes, the forty nine ers right now,
because of all the crazy tie breakers wouldn't even be
(46:10):
in the playoffs, although their playoff possibility is fifty six
percent according to NFL dot Com. So that's what we've got,
that's what the playoffs would be if they started today.
Speaker 4 (46:21):
Yeah, the next week will be crazy because we got
the trade deadline'll come up and one of the big
potential trade chips went off the board when Christian.
Speaker 2 (46:28):
Kirk broke his collar bone.
Speaker 4 (46:29):
Yes, so we'll keep an eye on that of course
and report back in the future episodes. But yeah, we're
getting into the heart of it now. So yeah, it's great.
Speaker 3 (46:38):
Great time here I and now you can start the
music because now we will wrap it up for Mike
Harmen and Ian Roddy. I am Dan Beyer. Mike have
his rankings later on in the week, and yeah, we'll
I'll get together maybe for a therapy session tomorrow to
talk about all of our inks with our teams. How
about that. We'll talk to the next time here on
I Wander Funds
