way tire buying should be. Well, just like that, another
college football season is a blur. As we are now
into December, and typically around this time it ends with
a thud and it made for TV event. But this
time it's going to be a little different. It all
(00:45):
starts Sunday morning at nine a m. Pacific twelve noon Eastern,
when the first ever college football Playoff twelve team bracket
is picked for real, a month long tournamental start December twentieth.
And don't act like you're not here for it. I
(01:05):
know there's Teeth Nachigan complaining, and already it is the narrative.
Do we potentially have an under one of those quote unfair?
I say this in quotes unfair situations possibly playing out
in college football this weekend see last week, Alabama jumped
Miami and the CFP rankings, giving a three lost Tide
(01:26):
team the inside track to a playoff Berth and you
should hear the arguments that have been breaking out. I
guess what it really came down to is Alabama is
three to one against top twenty five teams, Miami is
zero in one. Bama is six to one against teams
over five hundred, Miami is four and two. Those are
(01:47):
the words of Commissioner Committee chair and also University of
Michigan ad Ward Manual. So if SMU beats Clemson in
the ACC Championship game Saturday, Alabama's going to be in
the playoff. If Clemson wins, then the committee will have
(02:07):
to decide between given the final at large spot to
SMU or Alabama. And here's the unfair, quote unquote unfair
situation that is brewing. Do you punish the SMU Mustangs
for losing a conference title game when Alabama didn't even
make it there? And I'm not mixed up. The SEC
(02:30):
is about a bazillion times better than the ACC. But
having said that, the SEC is going to get three
or four teams in and the ACEC might get one, well,
they might get two, but I don't want to get
ahead of myself. You see, if you've been reading the
proverbial tea leaves closely. The race for the college football
spot seemingly was somewhat subtled last week, and even though
(02:54):
the final bracket is coming on Sunday, because if you
just look at this again, Ward Manual, we see selection
committee chairman. He said on the Selection Show that the
committee will not reorder teams who aren't playing during this
weekend's conference title games, which basically means more than half
of the top twenty five is locked in. Cody said,
there's nothing that's going to change for us to evaluate
(03:17):
them any differently than we do now. So who's the
big winner in all this? Number eleven Alabama, which is
now in line for the final at large, not over
Number twelve Miami, who stunk it up the last three
weeks and they deserve it. Number thirteen Old Miss and
number fourteen South Carolina, who, by the way, had a
(03:39):
hell of a year. Look at their strength to schedule,
look at their strength of record. But the reasoning again
is simple, he said. The Crimson tie. They're three and
won against top twenty five competition. The Kinges are just
then one. Miami is angry. Of course, Bama also has
a head to head win over South Carolina and a
slightly better list of wins than Old Miss, even though
(04:01):
Old Miss and Lane Kiffin is mad too, but he's
always mad. Right now, I mean, okay, if the playoffs
started today, and they don't start today, Boise State handled
UNLV Friday night twenty one to seven, so seemingly they're
locked into the number four seed. They'll get a bye
(04:24):
right now. And you know we're going to talk about
this with Jared Smith coming up in about twelve minutes Oregon,
I expect him to beat Penn State. But let let's
tell you what. Let's just do this. If it's right now,
Oregon's won Texas is two, SMUs three and Boise's four.
Oregon would play the winner of Tennessee Ohio State. Boyse
would play the winner of Arizona State Penn State. SMU
(04:45):
would play the winner of Bama Notre Dame in Texas
the winner of Indiana Georgia. But we've still got I
think some meaningful games Saturday.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Now.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
You can't tell me that the you can't tell me
that the com fence championship games aren't somewhat diminished because
they are, but they're still meaningful. For instance, SMU Clemson
SMUs eleven and one Clemson's nine to three. The loser
of this game was once thought to be safely in
the playoff bracket due to the SEC having a bunch
(05:15):
of bubble teams or that that got their third loss
over the last two weeks. But when Miami lost to
Syracuse Saturday, that gave you know, Clemson an open back
door to Charlotte. It's not the case any longer. So
the selection committee will not consider a four loss team
for the bracket, which broaches the possibility of a three
loss SEC team getting one of the final at large bids.
(05:39):
Enter Alabama, The Canes forget it. They have no practical
path back into the bracket. Too bad, too sad would
want to be you did it to yourself, You escape
with a couple of weird wins earlier in the year
and finally caught up with you. And by the way,
Miami's definitely out, especially if Clemson ends up winning the
a SEC championship game. However, SMU could potentially be victimized
(06:02):
and left out of the committee views as second loss
to be too inferior to forgive, so that game has meaning.
How about Arizona State and Iowa State. This game will
likely determine the twelfth seed in the bracket, no matter
what happens elsewhere. There are, of course, some scenarios where
the Big Twelve champ can reach its high as the
four seed. Nope, not anymore because Boise State won Friday night,
(06:26):
So I think the first round buy and the top
four seed is out for the Big Twelve unless it's
wells acc forget me. You know it's funny the SEC
talks about how great they are, and they are. You
have the first year team in their Texas likely can
win the championship, although I think Georgia gets some. Saturday
Oregon we hear about how great the Big Ten is
(06:47):
and they are. Oregon strolls in They're gonna win the
Big Ten their first year, and then SMU does the
same thing. In the SEC. They're all playing the championship games.
Just decide. Footnote. You gotta love Arizona State, man. They
seem to be playing with house money. They were picked
to finish last in the Big Twelve preseason media poll.
Now one win from a shot at a national championship.
That's something the Sun Devils haven't seen in twenty seven years.
(07:10):
Iowa stayed. On the other hand, they've taken full advantage
of the rest of the conference's top teams watching them
stumble at the finish line. They were left for dead
three weeks ago when they got beat by Kansas. So look,
these are two dangerous to hot teams. Arizona State's got
that running back scataboy. He looks like a rolling ball
of butcher knives. And they are really playing really good football.
(07:34):
Department of redne them see department. And and we'll get
to Texas, Georgia, we'll get to Oregon Penn State and
again give it up to Boise who took care and
you know on the backs of Heisman Trophy finalist Ashton genty.
He won't win it, but what a hell of a
year he's had. And so I think that's that's pretty
(07:55):
well settled. So there you have it. I mean, look,
this is going to be a lot of fun Saturday.
There are a lot of betting angles. There are a
lot of betting things we'll talk about coming up before
we get to that. This just in Yeah, the Lions
really are scary good. Remember when they went thirty two
years without a playoff win. Well, I covered ten of
those teams from ninety eight to eight. Remember when the
(08:16):
Lions were one and one earlier in the year. There
were actually people that questioned the Lions after losing to
the Bucks. Where they've you know, maybe last year was
a flute. No, Lions are good. They're getting through the injuries.
Philadelphia is going to be a problem. Let's not look
too far down the road. They've won eleven straight, the
best start in franchise history. They beat Green Bay, a
(08:37):
very good Green Bay team, thirty four to thirty one
Thursday night, and they are the super Bowl favorite here
in Las Vegas. And I really think the Packers are good.
People will call that a good loss. No such thing
as a good loss. That's like a good kidney stone.
But that offense looked as good as any unent in
the league last night. Jordan Love made some sensational throws.
They didn't get go into the second half, but that
(08:59):
team's for real didn't matter. Jared Goff. The Lions, they persist.
They come at you like no other team. They've spent
the season alternating between winning close games and blowing teams out.
And I know Dan Campbell's decision to go for it
on fourth down late in the game was ballsy. He
ended up pulling it off. I know you got to
be a little nervous because there's a thing called risk reward.
(09:20):
And we'll see, we'll see when the playoffs start. But
let's face it, the Lions are good. Okay. The college
football championship games they checked at the conference championship games. Yes,
they've been diminished a little bit, but not that much
because there's plenty of betting action to talk about. So
we'll bring in Jared Smith here coming up. Hey, football fans,

Speaker 5 (10:49):
Jared how a right, buddy, Bernie, good to see you.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
I guess good to hear you. I was really looking
forward to having you tonight. Because although some of the
luster has been diminished from the championship weekend as it were,
regarding conferences, there's still a lot of good betting information
and a lot of opportunities for folks. So let's move
through these games. I want to start out with one
(11:12):
Iowa State at Arizona State. Interesting matchup, The number I'm
seeing is ASU minus two total fifty nine and a half.
Is that job with what you've got?
Speaker 5 (11:22):
Yeah, it looks like they've kind of been caught in
no man's land. I haven't really seen this get to three,
and I don't think it's going to on the Arizona
State side now. Just Arizona's state being in this game,
Bernie is a minor miracle.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 5 (11:36):
They were picked sixteenth in the Big Twelve. Yes, I
mean I didn't even you know there was a time.
I was right. I'm old enough to know a time
when there wasn't sixteen teams in the Big Twelve, but
one hundred to one preseason odds to win the conference.
The preseason total was four and a half, and that's
the lowest preseason total of any team playing on championship weekend,
(11:56):
ten to two against the number this year. Obviously, the
market was just ribly wrong on this team. The only time,
other than a game against randomly Texas State, the only
other time they were a dog was against Iowa in
the Syhawk game. So mar excuse me, that's Iowa State.
So you look at this game, and I think the
injury to Tyson matters a lot, and is Iowa was
(12:20):
staking to be able to stop the run something that
they haven't done this year. Like if these teams played
in the preseason, the number would be about two touchdowns different.
So Arizona States increased dramatically. You're buying the peak of
the market with them, and with Arizona State other than Skataboo.
Their best player is injured Jordan Tyson, the receiver. So
how Iowas State plays that? Are they going to stack
the box? That's not the kind of defense they like
(12:41):
to play. They play more over three three five with
Hecock the defensive coordinator. So are they going to come
out of that at all and really shut down Skataboo.
If they do, I think they've got a chance to win.
This game feels like a lower scoring game, feels like
an undergame. The Big twelve has been pretty wild this year.
I wouldn't be shocked if this one was back and forth.
But Arizona State being here as a minor miracle. So
(13:01):
we'll see how much house money they play with.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
Well, you brought up a good point. First of all,
Arizona State runs for about one hundred and ninety five
yards a game in Iowa gives up about one hundred
and seventy five. And the irony is Iowa has a
good pass defense, but Arizona State not really much of
a passing team. You look for string versus weakness. It
feels like Arizona State's going to dominate the trenches and
(13:24):
it feels like two's a nice cozy number. I would
be surprised if Arizona State doesn't run all over Iowa.
Am I wrong?
Speaker 5 (13:32):
Well? Yeah, I think it's just like, how does I
because the weakness is obvious here, Like Iowa State is
really bad against the run outside the top ninety and
a lot of the metrics that I look at, but
they play a style like you have to look at
those metrics kind of you know, with the with the
with a grain, with a you know, a slanted you
know view, because they play a style of defense that
is susceptible to the run. They want to funnel you
(13:55):
into the past. Like that's why you play basically nickel
in your base. You know, you play a three three five,
you only have three down line and it's just really
tough to stop the run and I don't. And I
was a couple people asking me to say Oh, well,
you know you can just put in some more heavier packages.
That's hard to do. You've played the same style of
defense for fourteen weeks. Now, in the fifteenth week of
the regular season or you know, the conference championship weekend,
(14:17):
you're just gonna go to a new defense that you
might not have the personnel or the success with. So
it's a tough ask. I think Arizona State mentally is
the tougher team. I think Kenny Dillingham is the better coach.
I think Sam Levitz had a really good season, but
they are limited in this game without their best receiver,
(14:37):
like without Jordan Tyson, who has a thirty eight percent
target share. They their their next leading receivers like the
Scataboo and a tight end like they just they don't
have a lot of depth behind him. So how Arizona
State handles that. And on the Arizona State defensive side,
I would say they're playing above their talent. The sum
is greater than the parts. Like they don't have a
lot of guys that flash on tape. Their pass rush
(14:59):
grades outside the top, so they're not going to get
after the quarterback. They've played some mobile quarterbacks this year,
and struggled Kansas UCFK State. Those are the games they
struggled in. This feels like a game that if if
Iowa State stops the run, I think they win the
football game.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
And interestingly enough, you know, spot on Arizona State. They
were voted to finish last in the conference. Somehow they
finished the season winning five straight games and looking fairly impressive.
To me, Iowa State, We're living in weird times. They
lose two games in November and yet they can still
find themselves in the playoffs if they win Saturday. All right,
Georgia Texas is going to be like a super Bowl
(15:36):
of sorts. Texas lay in two and a half. But
this feels like a home game for Georgia, that Georgia
Dome where they I'll tell you you just take it
from there. I feel like Texas might be walking into
a bus saw.
Speaker 6 (15:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (15:48):
I mean, Texas will have people fired up for this game.
It's their first year in the SEC and they're they're
in the SC Championship game and they lost this game,
you know, back in October. I think when you watch
that tape, I think the thing two things really stood out.
A Georgia's defense was unbelievable in that game, and there's
some reasons why, and I'll get them a minute, But
(16:09):
the second thing that stood out was there's seven turnovers
in that game like that. That is in a game
with the talent level on offense that these two teams have,
especially Texas, who is you know, run by an lead
offensive mine, they actually play a very conservative offensive system.
They for the most part, keep everything close to the
line of scrimmage. Quin Youwers is like sixty percent of
(16:30):
his passes this year within ten yards of the line
of scrimmage. They run a lot of screens and draws,
so they don't have like a high risk offense. They
fumbled the three times in that game, so I just
I think you're gonna see more offensive continuity from both teams.
It was a low scoring game. The total was fifty seven.
Back in mid October, it was thirty to fifteen finals
the only time all year Georgia was a dog. I
think when you look at what Texas is offensively right now,
(16:54):
they're obviously trying to protect quinn Ewers. They're gonna try
to get the run game going. Georgia was able to
do a really good job in the last game because
they completely threw a curve ball. Defensively, what they did
is they went to a bear front. And your audience,
what's a bearfront if you don't know, it's the front
that the eighty five Bears made famous. It's basically five
defensive linemen. You're playing hat on a hat on the
offensive line. But what Kirby Smart did that was so
(17:17):
unique in that game. Instead of having like a linebacker
play that fifth defensive lineman spot, he put his nickel
corner in there because it allowed in flexibility to shut
down that screen game, the short passing game, and to
blitz off the edge and get some speed. And it
worked because they held Texas one hundred yards rushing. It
was one of their worst games of the entire season offensively.
So now sarcas that on tape, how does he adjust
(17:40):
off of that? And that's the cat and mouse game.
The other part here is I don't know how much
juicer is going to be in this game. Honestly, Bernie,
both teams are in the playoff. I would not be
shocked if this game is a little more free flowing.
It feels more like a alamobol than an SEC championship
game because both teams are going to be in the
playoff regardless of what happens. Obviously, seeding matters, and you
(18:02):
want that buy. But I don't know how much juice
and intensity there's going to be on the defensive side
of this game. We'll see, We'll see what the early
vibe is.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
Well. And you wonder how much gas in the tank
did Georgia expend last week or racing a seventeen point
deficit against Georgia Tech and then having to go eight
overtimes to win the game. But this is another weird
matchup because which Carson Becket is going to show up?
I mean, when you throw three picks and you don't
throw a touchdown against Texas and you still manage to win,
(18:32):
your defensive line gets the credit. I think that's the
way it happened. But I gotta tell you, quinn Ewers
was benched that day for arch Manning, So I think
this is a fistfight in a phone booth. You may
well be right, but I'm guessing they might want to
buy more than we realize. But how much gas do
you really have in the tank when you get to
this point in the season.
Speaker 5 (18:50):
It's a very valid point now Georgia has the extra
day they played Friday, so factor that in. I think
statistically this is Kirby's worst defense. It probably his entire
time at Georgia. I think the first year was pretty rough,
but elout Tech and Haynes King, you just do whatever
they wanted. Their defensive success right this year is outside
(19:11):
the top thirty, but the tough their talents in the
top ten. So there's a big gap in how much
success teams are having offensively and what they have on
the field. They have played a very difficult schedule, but
when you consider the talents a unit that's in the
upper echelon, they have not met expectations. And I'll be honest.
Another thing that kind of is a red flag. Julian Humphrey,
(19:33):
who's like a starter, went in a transfer portal this
week like they're about to play in the college with
a playoff and they have a starting level corner. Now,
I know Georgia's got a million of these guys, and
I'm sure he probably wasn't getting enough playing time and
he probably got a better deal somewhere else. And let's
be honest, that's what this is today. This is money,
this is deals, this is contracts that they are negotiating
with the teams and the players. It's not, you know,
(19:56):
playing time really that drives it as much. But to
have a guy hit the portal the week of the
SEC title game before your collegetable playoff game, I think
that's a little bit of a red flag.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
No, it certainly is. Uh yeah, I don't know if
you fired on the on on the game. I know
urban Meyer has a real strong opinion.
Speaker 5 (20:15):
Oh well, then if I want his opinion, please, what
is it on the game?
Speaker 2 (20:21):
Well, he's been in a game. He's been in that
game in that dome. And while he respects Texas and
their DNA and their history, he doesn't think they've seen
anything quite like this. So he doesn't He thinks if
they don't get out to an early lead, George is
gonna George is gonna take this games fair.
Speaker 5 (20:36):
I mean, you look at Texas schedule. I have not
been blown away. I think there's a case to be
no to they No. And then they got the easiest
of all the like they got they got the anti Oklahoma.
Oklahoma got the tough SEC or early schedule in their
first season. Texas got the easy one. And there's a
case to be made that if Penn State looks impressive
(20:57):
tomorrow night and and Texas win, it's closed. There's a
case to be made to put Penn State in the
number one seed because they valued the Big Ten all year.
They've had four teams in the top five and the
Big ten all year up until recently, obviously with Ohio
State losing. But I don't know how good Texas is.
It is a very fair quite now. We will find
out a lot tomorrow night. But they have failed their one.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
Test so far this year.
Speaker 5 (21:21):
They're one real test.
Speaker 2 (21:22):
And the one thing I will watch, honestly is will
Texas be able to run the ball? That's gonna matter,
I believe to open up passing lanes. You mentioned this
a minute ago. Georgia's pass rush got home, and I
don't know why wouldn't Saturday. So let's just save that
for Saturday. We'll see what happens. I'm glad you brought
up Penn State. Oregon has, you know, the lone undefeated
(21:46):
team in the country, and you know, I know their
question has been called somewhat into schedule a question. But
here's the deal. They've answered every test and they do
so many things. Well, what's surprised me. I believe this
sendoff line was four. How much professional money came raging
(22:07):
in on Penn State given James Franklin's extremely dubious one
in sixteen record against top five teams. What are your
thoughts on this game from a purely a handicapping standpoint.
Speaker 5 (22:20):
Yeah, I think the Franklin impact matters early and if
it doesn't, like if they come out firing, it's not
a factor in the game, I don't think. I think
it's more of the offensive script and the game plan
and are they in the game. If they're in the game,
they're in the game. If Oregon comes out with Tess
(22:42):
Johnson and this explosive offense and goes up fourteen to
nothing and Penn State can't run it and it's thirty
eight and thirty nine at every drive, you're gonna know
by halftime, and there's a chance that that is the path.
The path for Penn State is Nicholas Singleton and all
of a sudden being able to get into third and
(23:05):
shorts third and manageables where all of a sudden, Andy
coultiel Nicki scheme and making Tyler Warren this football tight
end unicorn, the next coming of Jim Thorpe. Yes, all
of a sudden becomes a factor. The problem is if
it's just Drew Aller on third and eight trying to
find Tyler Warren over the middle, it's not going to
(23:26):
be consistent. It has to be Nicholas Singleton early. It
has to be explosive. They have to do better on
early downs and run the ball. Oregon could be had
defensively running the ball, like their run game defense with Lanning,
who has made some tweaks. They've been banged up a
little bit this year. Birch has been up and down,
but they're outside the top forty in rushing success. Right,
(23:48):
they can be run on down to down. It's the
question of compenstate execute. I think Aller's actually had a
really good year.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
He's not there statistically because he never takes any chances.
Speaker 5 (24:00):
But you know what, that's what they've asked him to do.
They haven't asked him there. And to be fair, and
also to be fair, he doesn't have a whole lot
to throw to a lot of questions.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
He brought up Tyler Warren and then he listened. He's key,
and interestingly enough, that did these two teams have a
common opponent, Ohio State. They both got him at home.
Oregon beat him, and then Penn State didn't beat him.
But explain to me, with the new high falutin offensive
coordinator that Penn State brought in, and they've got the
(24:28):
ball first and goal from the four, Tyler Warren doesn't
touch the ball once and that might have beaten Ohio
State had they given him the ball in space and
given him a couple of chances to make a play.
Why do they not even dial up his number.
Speaker 5 (24:40):
I don't remember that sequence specifically, but probably towards the.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
End of the game. It's towards the end of the game.
Speaker 5 (24:46):
I think, if you want what's wrong with Penn State's offense,
they don't have any game breaking receivers and then so
they don't have anyone who can bail them out. So
it has to be on schedule, like if it's manageable
on third downs, because aler like the O line is
(25:07):
not elite, it's solid, it's not elite. I think it's
about a singleton healthy and can they get some pop
early in the run game. Oregon's done a good job
creating pressure. They're top ten in the country. Creating pressure
without having the blitz. So if if Birch is back
and they're getting pressure with the front four aler as
we said, has protected the football well, no turnover worthy plays,
(25:28):
but the yards per temp drops off a cliff, so
when it's an obvious passing down, it's just checked down, Charlie.
And if the pressure gets home, they can't push the
ball down the field. And even if they can, they
don't have any game breaking receivers who can create separation
because Oregon again doesn't have the blitz to create pressure.
They can keep six seven guys back in the secondary.
It's just it's a they're really they're really well coached
(25:50):
team and they haven't been there before either though. And
I think that you go watch the first half of
the Pack twelve title game last year against Washington, were
defecated down their leg with Bonnick, I think there's that.
That's why the Franklin coaching top game game element isn't
as big of a factor here because they're not playing
Ohio State and they're not well.
Speaker 2 (26:10):
You know, Oregon played the proverbial Big Ten schedule. They
went into Wisconsin, won a tough game, They win into Michigan,
toyed with them. They beat Ohio State, they have a
top five rushing attack, they have a top five passing
attack in Big Ten games, held opponents to sixteen points
a game. My question to you is, is this number right?
Three and a half? Could Penn State hang this number?
Speaker 5 (26:31):
It's not right? Now that it's getting closer to three, Wow,
you're wow, it's a flat three at South Point, Holy
ra If you're back then to drag and drive over
to now, I wouldn't believe. I believe it closed now,
but it's you can lay three flat minus one. Then
we're getting to a point where I think you're going
(26:51):
to get some money that's gonna step in on Oregon
at some point.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
Would it surprise you on a scale of one to ten,
how much wh would it surprise you if it was
a field goal Oregon way in or be Penn State
beat him.
Speaker 5 (27:03):
I mean, what you're doing is you're giving me a
heart attack twenty four hours before I'm actually going to
have one tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
But Jimmy Cephalo's not walking through that door, buddy. I'm sing, no, no,
he's not.
Speaker 5 (27:17):
And I actually have a I'll be at a poker
tournament tomorrow so I'll probably be gambling while I'm you know, sweating,
But I think I honestly think, based on what we've
seen in college football this year, it would not surprise
me fair enough. I just think there's been so many
ridiculous upsets. Nothing Oregon has done has made me feel
(27:40):
like they are a stone cold assassin in this game.
And nothing has happened in college football this year like
there's been. I would say a million things in the
last two months that have happened more surprising than an
eleven and one team beating a twelve and oh team.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
A very interesting matchup Clemson SMU Saturday. I think Clemson
should be sending bundles of flowers to Syracuse because when
they beat Miami, that opened the door for Clemson to
punch your ticket. I like this SMU team. I don't
know how the experience of dabbleswiney in coaching so many
of these big games, and how he might have a
(28:17):
squad ready. And I know that Dabbos Swinny had a
much tougher non conference schedule than SMU did. But be
that as it may, you get these two teams on
the field. I do believe SMU is a very good
football team. Okay, they had second best scoring offense in
the e CEC and their defense is no slouch either.
I know the quote the proverbia week schedule, So Clemson
(28:40):
catching two and a half here? Break down this game
from your angle.
Speaker 5 (28:44):
Yeah, this is a good spot I think for kind
of just analyzing this game from a like, Wow, Clemson's
been there so much and we haven't seen it from SMU.
But SMU is the better team here, Like, it is
an intriguing handicap from the perspective of you know, SMU,
I think is more talented, and I think that frankly
(29:04):
a better coach. But Clemson has the experience of this
game and it's basically a home game for them in Charlotte.
So I wouldn't be shocked if the nerves and the
tightness of SMU is a factor. They are on the
doorstep of winning, of making a collegeable playoff. I don't
like any negativity around SMU, like fans or people saying
(29:28):
that this is a punishment. This game is not a
punishment for SMU. This is an opportunity the options for SMU.
Let's say they and I heard RHT lastly, the head
coach day this week, Oh what if we all just
got COVID and we didn't play like he was obviously
saying it tongue in cheek, of course, but let's let's
map that out, and let's say SMU was like Notre Dame,
(29:48):
sitting around doing nothing this weekend, and because of where
they're seated, they're in the ACC. They're not going to
get a home game in the first round. They would
have had to go to Columbus or South Bend or
Happy Valley and be touchdown dog and play at a
Big ten outdoor weather game. Or you win this week
on a neutral when you're favored, then you get three
(30:10):
weeks off and you get to go to the quarterfinals,
and then you get to play on another neutral instead
of having to go on the road for your first
college torole playoff game. Like to me, this is the
easier path for SMU to make a quarterfinal, which is
obviously the goal to get as far as you can.
They have the team that can do it. I think
Jennings is a legit quarterback. He doesn't do one thing
(30:31):
specifically well. He is very efficient, he doesn't turn it
over much. They've got a couple of dudes in the backfield,
I think who can at least carry the mail. The
on line doesn't overwhelm you. I think Clemson's defense that's
where this team is very different in years past, Like
this is not the Clemson defense that made the National
Tier run. Obviously, it's not Trevor Lawrence Sshawn Watson a quarterback,
(30:53):
but I think Kate club Nick still has He probably
is the best player in the field in this game,
but he doesn't have a whole lot of round him.
Mafas banged up. The running game is kind of hampered lately.
I think that I think smused the better team, but
I don't know how much the nerves and the road
environment it affected Boise. He didn't affected NLB A.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
Boy, There's there's no question it did and a year
I think he's a playground quarterback. But that's a that's
a conversation for a different day you bring up.
Speaker 5 (31:18):
But that road environment and the cold it impacted ULB tonight.
How much will the if there will be any weather
tomorrow in Charlotte, how much will the road environment impact sme.
They've been good on the road this year, but if
they can overcome the jitters and the nerves. I think
they have the better football team.
Speaker 2 (31:38):
I have one last question, but just a quick statement. Look,
this is you look for, you know, matchups, strength versus drink.
Clemson's got the best rushing attack, but SMU's got the
top rushing defense. So this would be a good chess
match kid club that can't afford to turn the ball over. Okay,
and and SMU's pass defense isn't great. The last question
I have the they won't the committee will not consider
(32:00):
a four lost team. So if Clemson loses, forget it.
But if SMU loses, do they find their way into
the bracket.
Speaker 5 (32:05):
I don't think so.
Speaker 2 (32:06):
Okay, I appreciate it.
Speaker 5 (32:08):
I think it's a really I think they I think like,
if you were the committee, would you put s m
U in that game against Notre Dame in the first
round or Obama? I think.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
You you lay that out perfectly, Yeah, Bama without even
thinking twice.
Speaker 5 (32:23):
And I think it's Bama. I think Bama's in No
matter what.
Speaker 2 (32:26):
Jared, I know you got to get up early. I
appreciate you, man, and keep up all the great work
your research and uh and we'll talk down the road soon.
Speaker 5 (32:33):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (32:33):
Bertie. That is Jared Lee Smith. You hear them here
just in a few hours on countdown to kick off
coming up. Well boy, we got some excellent, excellent topics
to uh set up for the midnight hour and uh
and we've even got a quote from a Hall of
Fame quarterback weighing in on one of the topics we're
(32:56):
going to get to. So we'll have three good ones
plos to rant. Now the callers are what make it so?
Nineteen minutes away eight seven, seven, nine to nine on
Fox eight seven seven nine nine six six three six nine.
But more I said, it's twelve midnight in Vegas. Probably
be the same with you, and certainly twelve midnight figuraly
will set up the bennight hour topics. Next. I'm Bernie Fratto.
We are a company line from the Las Vegas Fox

Speaker 2 (33:34):
All right back at the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports
Radio coming to lie from the tarac dot Com studios
here in Las Vegas. We are twelve minutes away from
the midnight hour. Your chance to weigh in. Callers have
been fantastic eight seven, seven nine nine six six three
six nine, eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox three.
Topics to choose from, plus durant. If you want to
(33:56):
opine on something else, you may have seen Trevor Lawrence
getting last week. I'll share gets a three game suspension.
He's got a body of work. He can make all
the great statements he wants. By the way, I've seen worse.
But look, here's the situation. The NFL has a right
to control the circumstances of competition when it comes to
integrity and player safety. But what's interesting is how far
(34:19):
do you go are are quarterbacks to protected? A Hall
of Famer Tom Brady had some thoughts about this. Let's
give it a listen.
Speaker 7 (34:27):
And at the same time, when you run, you put
yourself in a lot of danger. And when you do that,
I don't think the onus of protecting an offensive quarterback
who's running should be on a defensive player. You know,
maybe they find or penalize a quarterback for sliding late,
you know, and say, look, if we don't want these
hits to take place, we've got to penalize the offense
(34:48):
and the defense.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
Here's the problem, Tom, I love you, look a fat kid,
love cake. You're not go to penalize a quarterback for
sliding and giving himself up. All right? If you don't
want these things to happen, players getting suspended, conversations to
break out, don't sue the NFL for a billion dollars.
This whole concussion thing started. The NFL was sued for
(35:11):
a billion dollars, so they're putting in all kinds of protections.
This is a heated argument. There's cases to be made
on both sides. Was Alshier wrong for what he did?
Did he want the three game suspension for spiriting Trevor Lawrence?
Or has the NFL gone too far? Does Tom Brady
have a point our quarterbacks to protected? Do you agree again?
(35:34):
I'll stand on what I said. The NFL has the
right to control the circumstances of their competition, their game,
their integrity, their player safety. You know what to do
with his topic. Should you want to weigh in on it.
There's an old saying, be gracious in defeat and humble
in victory. Well, Michigan wasn't last week, were they? And
(35:57):
by the way, it wasn't just Michigan. It happened in
North Carolina as well. It happened in Florida. And in
case you missed it, when Texas went to Michigan in September,
they planted their flag. What's up with this flag planning thing?
I mean, true greatness needs no self promotion. I spent
a lot of time around University of Michigan for seventeen years.
(36:18):
I didn't go there, my mom did. And it's an
institution that's very proud, very prideful. Some think arrogant. It's
an international institution. This is, frankly the envy of a
lot of schools and people. There's a school over in
East Lants and they hate them. They just throw rocks
at them because they just they want to beat them.
To tell you the truth, sorry, that's the way it is.
The bottom line is this though you went in whipped
(36:40):
Ohio States, but you shocked the college football world is
twenty point underdogs. Do you diminish what you did by
the flag planning? What do you think of flag planning
in general? Is it good? Is it bad?
Speaker 3 (36:51):
You like it? Yes? Or no?
Speaker 2 (36:52):
Is it over the top? I know Doug Gottlieb said, hey,
too bad. You don't want us to plan our flag
beat us? That's fair, But do you really need to
do that? You know one of the greatest running backs
of all time, Barry Sanders, the guy knew a little
bit in Detroit. He'd hand the ball to the ref.
Or guys like to spike the football. That's spiking the
football of the highest degree, and then you know a
(37:15):
whole melee. Wasn't really that big of a melee, but
it broke out and both schools got fined, and I'm
sure there'll be some sort of legislation against this next year.
So do you like flag planning? He's a good bad? Yes?
Speaker 3 (37:26):
No?
Speaker 2 (37:27):
Over the top? Or should you win with dignity? The
third one? Okay, here we go the goal that at bat?
Is this another WTF exclamation point? Is this just another
Rob Manford gimmick? Or is just a great idea? Okay? Manford?
He hit he scored big with the pitch clock. I
(37:47):
don't know about ghost runners. Don't really like it that much,
but a lot of people do. Robowomps are coming. Who
knows what's next, but Commissioner said that the gold in
at bat was discussed at the owners meetings this past
fall and it's in the conversation stage only right now,
but reportedly they want to test it in the minor leagues.
(38:08):
Now the exact mechanics haven't been determined yet. You'd likely
see it used in later innings when the team needs
a run. Maybe you got a poor hitter at the plate.
We keep here in the show heo Tani angle and
then laugh clown laugh. What if? What if? What if
the ninth hitter is up and you need to run,
and hey, let's bat Otani. Then he hits a double.
Now he's on second base, but you want him to
bat again for you know, for himself as a ghost
(38:31):
runner or I check that you've already used him. Now
is the golden and bat? Now now it's his turn?
What do you do? Okay haha? Laugh clown laugh? Right,
could this happen? Never say never? But it's hard to
imagine a league, in a sport that's so steeped in
tradition making a change this drastic. I feel like it's
a gimmick. That's where eyeway and out at enough's enough.
So we've got spearing quarterbacks. Your thoughts on that, We've
(38:55):
got flag planting good or bad? Yes or no? When
with dignity or what? And how about this crazy golden
at bat and baseball it's being talked about? Or we've
got the rant. If there's something else you want to
talk about, feel free. This is America Baby Live. How
you want to live? Eight seven seven nine nine six
six three six ' nine. Give us a call. It's
the midnight hour. We want to hear from you. You're
(39:15):
listening to the Bernie Frattle Show. I'm Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (39:20):
You don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
Well, that's right. You heard the man Bernie fraddleshow keeps
rolling right along? My name is Bernie Frattle. We are
coming to you live from the Tarrack dot com studios
here in Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio. Tyrat dot com
will help you get there an unmatched selection fans, free shipping,
free rhodazid protection, and over ten thousand recommended to installers.
Tyrack dot com. The way tired buying should be three
(39:46):
solid topics. Tonight it's that time, SUBMD that hour. All right,
flag planning good or bad? Yesterday over the top, Al
Shier gets a three game suspension for spearing Trevor Lawrence.
Did Tom Brady make any sensors? And the goldennut bat
I just threw up in my mouth. But let's hear
from the callers eight seven, seven nine nine six six
(40:07):
three six nine. Jim in Massachusetts starts it off. Then
we missed you last week, Jim.
Speaker 8 (40:12):
Yeah, I was on vacation, Burnon.
Speaker 3 (40:14):
I'm sorry I couldn't.
Speaker 8 (40:15):
Help carry the show for you, but I'm on vacation anyway. Hey,
the thing with the guy hitting Lawrence, Uh, three games
is good. Yeah, three games is good. I hope it
starts all that stuff. But that guy's had a history of.
Speaker 3 (40:32):
Doing stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
It's got a buddy of work. Yes, you know.
Speaker 8 (40:36):
So that's why I'm glad that happened, you know. And
the other thing, like Brady saying that they wouldn't let him,
they should let him play more or whatever. I mean,
that's rich coming from him, from him, because I'm here
in Massachusetts and I followed I'm not a faith this man,
but I followed them a lot. And I remember when
Prell's Thugs played for the Ravens. He used to run
to the ref all the time about that guy. You know,
(40:58):
he was scared to death about that guy. So it
was kind of like, yeah, you know, check your closet
before you come out and start say not you're not wrong.
Speaker 2 (41:05):
Those comments didn't land well, you're right, Jim. In a
lot of circles, they did not.
Speaker 9 (41:09):
You know.
Speaker 8 (41:10):
I mean for a guy being six to four and
all of him, you know, you've got to be tough
to play in that league. And he always had that
kind of like pretty boy, you know type of thing.
Speaker 3 (41:19):
But hey, get him his due.
Speaker 8 (41:21):
You know, he got where he got, but he thugs
was in his head though, throw out thugs. He was
in his head.
Speaker 3 (41:26):
So that's rich for him saying that.
Speaker 8 (41:28):
And the thing about this flag plant and all this
other stuff they ort to suspend all those kids, find
all those schools because the only reason that's happening is
because of the way the computer system and Instagram and
all that stuff TikTok on the phones now that you
can post all that stuff, and they all want to
do that stuff instead of you know, playing hot on
(41:48):
the field, letting bygones be bygones. You know, So I'm
all for that, you know, whether they get to that
level or not, but they should do that. They should
find him and find the schools and suspend the players.
Speaker 2 (41:58):
Well, the schools did get fined. There were no suspension,
but the schools did get fine. I just feel like
it diminishes your victory a little bit. You don't need to, dude,
if you got it done on the field. Anything beyond that,
to me starts to take away. But that's just me
any quickly. It didn't quickly on the Golden.
Speaker 3 (42:14):
Bat Oh scratch that, Bernie. I mean, that's just so stupid.
Speaker 8 (42:20):
And you know what we're getting in the playoffs for football,
you know, to get baseball till April.
Speaker 2 (42:26):
Jim, appreciate you, man, see you next week and for
a s fourth. I don't think the Golden and Battle
ever see the latter day, but they're talking about it,
so you're never going to know. Junior in Indianapolis, Welcome
into the Bernie Frattle Show. Thanks for checking in. Hey,
how you doing, Bernie, Well, thank you.
Speaker 10 (42:45):
I guess it's the flag planning. I think that the
kids don't have a rich tradition as they used to
back in the day, so I feel like it doesn't
cause the same Wait, as it would, especially with portal
going on and stuff like that. You guys won't even
be here next to next season, So what doesn't.
Speaker 3 (43:04):
It really mean?
Speaker 2 (43:05):
You know what I'm saying, You're not wrong.
Speaker 10 (43:08):
And so then, uh, with seven on seven football, that's
what I kind of NFL now, it's so soft that,
I mean, we really just got to let it go.
Like you, we have no old school warrior football like
that anymore. So that type of stuff is not should
not be allowed in football. And it said that, Uh,
(43:34):
he's still trying to initiate that, even though I would
like to see more hitting on the quarterback because that
kind of makes them.
Speaker 11 (43:40):
Have to have that ghost that that clock in their head.
Speaker 10 (43:43):
And they don't really they in the pocket fur five
seconds now. And then with the golden back. I think
that's cool me personally, because you can't viewership.
Speaker 2 (43:57):
Okay, No, I appreciate I appreciate it. No, I appreciate that, junior.
If thanks for checking in. I've always said the most
boring conversations and when everybody agrees, listen, you know, seventy
nine million people attended baseball games this last year. Uh,
and if it puts butts in seats or gets people
talking about it. Look, as long as you don't mess
with ninety feet between the bases and sixty feet six inches,
(44:20):
and trust me, everything else is game right from aster
turf to don stadiums to inter league play to the
DH everything, the pitch clock, the runner at second base,
Robo ams, what the hell? Andrew? And Bigger? Sure, what's up, buddy?
Speaker 12 (44:33):
Hey, how's it going?
Speaker 2 (44:34):
Doing well?
Speaker 12 (44:35):
All right? So the flag planting situation, how about if
the team is at home and they win, they can
plant the flag in their own field. You know, you
can't plant the flag in someone else's home field and
expect nothing to happen. Okay, and then then a ramp
(44:55):
go ahead, Okay, I've been saving this one the Yankee,
He's okay. Aaron Boone, you've lost your soul, your heart
to data. And why do you have Aaron Judge in centerfield?
He was an amazing right fielder. And then you changed
up the batting order in the World Series. You moved
(45:17):
Rizzo up a bunch of mistakes, and that's all I
gotta say.
Speaker 2 (45:23):
All Right, thanks a lot man, And I think and
I'm not going to defend Aaron Boone. And I know
Aaron I would just say this, so many of those
decisions these days are made upstairs, just like the Dodgers
did with Dave Roberts over the years, and that's just
the way the game is now. Tony and Miami, welcome back.
Always good to have you. What's new man, Hey, what's
going on?
Speaker 3 (45:41):
Brother?
Speaker 13 (45:43):
I don't have anything on the other two, so I'll
just kind of concentrate on this. Honestly, Bernie, when I
saw the hit, I really if they want to talpen
up basketball, that's fine. I think people are just turned
off anyway.
Speaker 3 (45:57):
Let that go.
Speaker 13 (45:58):
But football is peer gladiator. I saw absolutely nothing wrong
with it, and I feel like the guy shouldn't have
gotten thrown out by the game. I feel like, give
him fifteen twenty yard penalty. Let's move on. I really
don't see a problem with stuff like that. If you're
(46:20):
gonna sit there a question that like, where's Ronnie Lott,
where's Mike single Payer?
Speaker 2 (46:25):
Well, those days are long gone, my friend. You know that.
You know that those days are long gone. And I
think one of the reasons they'll share two reasons he
got the three game suspension. He does have a body
of work. He's had multiple incidents like this. And the
second thing is other players don't want to get suspended,
so when you do something like this, everybody else sees
it and sets an example. Fair.
Speaker 13 (46:45):
Yeah, I just think if if a quarterback that six
five two fifty is you're out man, I mean, and yeah,
I mean I'll give you that. I'll definitely give you that.
I just think that that.
Speaker 3 (46:57):
You got to play the game.
Speaker 13 (46:59):
And then bending him three games too. I mean, I
can't understand it, and it translates. You got to ask
yourself this, branw I'll let you get back to the collegs,
leave you with this. The winning is really the only thing.
Speaker 3 (47:13):
That transcends through times.
Speaker 13 (47:14):
The reason we bring up Bill Russells eleven championships. But
you got to sit there and ask yourself. And Mahomes
is an all time great. You got to say, you know,
if he was around twenty years ago when football what
was really football not flag football? You got to say,
does he get hurt on or you know, is he
get knocked out? And you know, it just brings up
(47:35):
the greatness of Montana, of Bradshaw, of Eve, Steve Young
and Barv and Aikman and how tough they were. And
then you know, going into Brady and all that. But
you know, I'll let you go with that. It just
was really frustrating to see, you know, a huge quarterback.
You know you can't touch him.
Speaker 14 (47:52):
It's not the way the game should be.
Speaker 2 (47:54):
Played, all right, fair enough, And I think one of
the things that happened since Bradshaw and Marino and Montana
have played is that the Union sued the NFL for
a billion dollars. And now the enoughl okay, you want
you want to do that, then we don't want to
suit for a billion dollars anymore. So And when a
when a player slides, he saying, hey, I'm giving myself up.
(48:16):
These are what the rules are now. And you know,
in a minute we'll get to how some of the
players are reacting about this. But Gary in California, you
are up next.
Speaker 6 (48:25):
Welcome in, Hey, Bernie, Yeah, great subject tonight. Let's get
to the quarterback situation. I'm old school. I'm with Al Davis.
Quarterback must go down, you must go down hard. I
know those days over with it gone way too far
the other way, Bernie, and I think you will even
admit that, especially with the roughing the passer, don't touch
the pass or you know, I've seen too many games
(48:47):
flipped on that call and it's not right. So yeah,
the hit on Trevor Lawrence, Yeah that was tough, and
don't think it deserved three games. But if the NFL
was really concerned about player safety, they get rid of
Thursday Night Football. And the other thing is to the
NFL for a billion dollars.
Speaker 9 (49:07):
Billion dollars.
Speaker 6 (49:08):
These guys are all billionaires, Bernie, Come on, you know, I.
Speaker 3 (49:11):
Don't see where that's gonna stop anything.
Speaker 6 (49:13):
So just just not a fan of it. Look at
even Troy Aitman, let's put skirts on him. You know,
that's exactly what he said on Monday Night Football. So
I'm not a big fan of Tom Brady. I think
the other caller had it right with Jim saying that,
yeah he's talking kind of talking out of school, but
he has done some good work. But let's let's get
(49:34):
the game back the other way a little bit with
the quarterback situation.
Speaker 2 (49:37):
Bernie, all right, good, good opinions. Gary, You know you're
I will tell you a lot of people are in
your camp on this. It swung the penulum has frankly
swung too far the other way in a lot of
people's minds. Steven Kansas City, welcome out and you're you're
up next.
Speaker 15 (50:00):
Man.
Speaker 8 (50:00):
I love the topic. I love the flag planting. Uh
Ohio State had that thing coming. I've been a big,
big ten fan all my life and what they did
to Indiana was horrible. In the last possession, Michigan gave
it to him in spades, and I love it. That's
what's after a big game. Plant the flag anywhere you want,
(50:23):
because that's what separates this from pro football where we
got this disease. Now where you know, Michigan Champions Club
with Forbes and Oracle Guy and Portnoy are buying this
quarterback for ten million dollars, and I mean, you know
you you know better, you know better than anyone. Bill
(50:44):
Belichick is one to be the GM of North Carolina
and is going to put in his son as coach.
And according to this Friday night news drop right now,
look look that story up that he's going to bring
all of his all of his New England Budies to
the North Carolina.
Speaker 11 (51:01):
I don't want I don't want.
Speaker 8 (51:03):
Bill Belichick coaching college. I don't I don't want guys
getting ten million dollars who are going to be the
Michigan quarterback who are unproven because the oracle guys, the
oracle guy's girlfriend loves Michigan. And I'm not even sure.
I'm not even Sir Larry Ellison likes Michigan all that much.
This is this is where we're at. It's the real time.
(51:25):
It's real time changing of the guards from college to
pro let Let it all go. Let let I want
in these championship games. I want somebody stabbing a flag
in the in the in the field if you feel,
if you feel like it, let him be college athletes.
I don't want I don't want to watch PO tomorrow.
(51:46):
I want to watch my my college game.
Speaker 3 (51:49):
I don't.
Speaker 8 (51:49):
I don't want to see Bill Belichick coaching North North Carolina.
I mean, that's that's just I don't.
Speaker 16 (51:57):
Why do you Why do.
Speaker 8 (51:58):
You paralyze these kids? Why pali for enjoying a great
guy that don't remember the rest of their lives.
Speaker 2 (52:07):
Good stuff, Steve, and I need to love to keep
you on arm. But I want to get to all
the callers. Just a couple of things, and I will
look at that story because that would be one hell
of a story. If Belichick ends up in North Carolina.
I'd be very shocked. He wants to catch Don Shula.
He's got fifteen wins to catch you, and he can't
do it to North Carolina. I certainly accept your your
(52:29):
opinion on flag planning. But to answer the question the irony,
there are rules against taunting during the game, and so
referees have to maintain control of the line between controlled
and uncontrolled violence. That's their job. The problem with flag
planning is it's a taunt. It's a provocative taunt after
the game, and refs can't guard the line, so player
(52:51):
safety comes into question. But you and voxtone, who tweets
in must be joined at the hip, he said, Bernie,
flag planning is great. They should honestly take it up
a notch. As a little George Costanza referen I love
that they should honestly take it up a notch and
be able to burn a replica of the opponent's mascot
on a spit right on the fifty. Make it a
gladiator sport. We want blood. We are off and running, Jerome, Dave, Michael, Andrea,
(53:17):
Kyle and Mark. We are getting to all You don't
go anywhere the midnight hour is off and running. Callers,

H Right, we're back on the Bernie Fraddle Show. The
midnight hour is raging. Callers have been great. Let's go
back out to the phone lines. We're joined by Jerome
and Charleston. What's happened in Jerome.
Speaker 11 (53:59):
Burn Baby burns? Hey, hey, Bernie, let him know you're
better not hit my homes like that because you might
get thrown.
Speaker 3 (54:07):
Out of the league like that.
Speaker 11 (54:10):
Leave you Dadada'll hit my homes like that? Oh hell
know you talk about the you're talking about Andy Reid
would like when you're not you hit my.
Speaker 17 (54:23):
Homes like that.
Speaker 11 (54:24):
And by the way, Trevor Lawns is out for the
rest of the season. I just thowd that the other
day he's got to have shoulder surney. Oh yeah, he
didn't hit him that hard. Concuse you.
Speaker 3 (54:33):
They tell you all for the streacher.
Speaker 11 (54:34):
Now you got to have shoulder sturney. You see a wreck.
Oh yeah, he didn't hit him that hard. And by
the way, Alice try here was Alabi's here. He's making
four hundred grand a game because I did the You
know me, I'm always doing the math.
Speaker 3 (54:50):
Yeah, four hundred grand.
Speaker 11 (54:51):
Again, it's not gonna cost him about little over a
million dollars because he signed a new contract with detectives. Uh,
twenty one million guarantee. Do break it down? Hey about
three nice to beal forward was a million dollars in
like three weeks.
Speaker 3 (55:06):
Huh.
Speaker 2 (55:08):
He's always going to appeal it.
Speaker 3 (55:10):
You know.
Speaker 2 (55:10):
I appreciate you keeping the real Jerome. He's going to
appeal it. He hopes to get it down to two
games or one. He may or may not be successful.
We break up a lot of really good points. Are
you still there? Do we lose?
Speaker 3 (55:21):
Jerome?
Speaker 5 (55:22):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (55:23):
Shucks? Okay, Jerome. Appreciate you, man. I thought I thought
that was a really good call. I appreciate it.
Speaker 5 (55:29):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (55:30):
Dave in Phoenix, how's it going, buddy?
Speaker 3 (55:34):
Hi? Bernie.
Speaker 18 (55:35):
So, first of all, I'm against flag planting and I'm
against running up the score. I'm also against the golden.
Speaker 8 (55:42):
At bad idea.
Speaker 18 (55:43):
But I would like to comment on the twelfth and
final spot in the college.
Speaker 16 (55:48):
Football play out.
Speaker 2 (55:49):
Ahead, Yeah, go ahead, Sure.
Speaker 18 (55:50):
Going back to Tuesday, when I looked at Miami, Alabama, Mississippi,
and South Carolina, I thought and still think that Mississippi.
Speaker 16 (56:00):
Has the best body of work.
Speaker 18 (56:02):
And if you simply look at them versus Alabama, they
have four common opponents, and Mississippi did much much better
against three of those four opponents. So I would simply ask,
if that was reversed and Alabama had done better against
three of the four, is there any chance that Mississippi
would be taken over Alabama?
Speaker 2 (56:23):
You know, the Dave, you're a practical guy. You know,
the damn thing's a TV show, right, yep? And Lane
Kiffin has already been screaming from the hilltops on what
has taken place? And this is going to get Yeah,
go ahead, continue on with your thoughts.
Speaker 3 (56:41):
Yep.
Speaker 18 (56:41):
Well, my other thing is if it comes down tomorrow
to SMU versus Alabama. Okay, we know it's a TV
show and Alabama has a huge edge.
Speaker 8 (56:52):
And they certainly do have more quality victories.
Speaker 18 (56:55):
You got to give them that they do. But in
the regular season of twelve games, there was a difference
not of one loss, but of two. It was eleven
and one versus nine and three. And then let's look
at how they each did on the road. SMU was
five to oh on the road, including wins.
Speaker 8 (57:14):
At Louisville and Duke.
Speaker 18 (57:16):
Alabama was two and three on the road, including a
loss to Vanderbilt and a twenty one point loss to
a really bad Oklahoma team.
Speaker 2 (57:26):
I want to say one thing about Old missil because
you bring up very coaching points. Losing to Florida twenty
four to seventeen killed them, just killed them. So they
find themselves in this discussion where it's in the hands
of the people because they did it to themselves.
Speaker 9 (57:43):
Well.
Speaker 18 (57:44):
Worse than that was losing to Kentucky at home.
Speaker 2 (57:46):
That was their first loss back in September. They could
have survived that, They could have survived the LSU loss.
With two losses. They beat Oklahoma, Alabama, didn't they both
beat Georgia. You know, to your points, right, listen, you're
not the first person to make that case.
Speaker 8 (58:02):
Anything else, Dave, Well, here's a team nobody talks about.
Speaker 3 (58:07):
Missouri.
Speaker 18 (58:09):
If they had won that incredible back and forth game
with South Carolina, they'd be sitting with two losses. Would
they be kind of safely in right now?
Speaker 2 (58:17):
Like Tennessee is, Well, it's an imponderable. We don't know. Yeah,
we don't know. I think, all right, thanks a lot, David.
I think in future years we need to get rid
of the buys. You just make it sixteen. That's stop
screwing around and get rid of the bye games. Boise
State's going to get a bye. They're a good football team.
(58:38):
Do they deserve a buye? That's another big argument. Michael
in Tulsa, Oklahoma, you are up next. Thanks for hanging on.
Speaker 16 (58:44):
What's up, Bud, Hi Bernie, great show.
Speaker 2 (58:47):
Thank you.
Speaker 16 (58:48):
The flag planting, I've yet to see anybody actually plant
the flag in the artificial turf. You can't pierce the flag.
I mean, you can't pierce the turf with the flag.
Speaker 3 (59:02):
And who is it? Uh?
Speaker 16 (59:05):
Baker started it, Baker Mayfield. He almost broke his wrist.
Uh yeah, putting that flag in the I mean in
real turf, maybe you got a chance, but.
Speaker 2 (59:17):
It's it's the symbolism of it. It's the symbolism and
the optics they get there.
Speaker 16 (59:22):
Never sticks in the ground.
Speaker 2 (59:24):
Well, and I'm not I'm not, I'm not advocating idiot,
but but yeah, I mean that's that that might be
a reason not to do it, But I don't think
they think of those things.
Speaker 16 (59:34):
Right right in the heat of the moment. All right,
thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (59:37):
Well, thanks Mike, thanks for checking in. Just for giggles.
Truck Truck Stop Fungus checks in on Twitter. He says, flat, Bernie,
flag planning is taunting and unsportsman like. In my opinion,
we always lined up and slapped hands and said good
game afterwards, from Pop Warner up to high school. Keep
it classy. There's there's something to be said for that.
Andrea in Massachusetts, good evening.
Speaker 13 (59:57):
How are you, Bernie, How are you doing?
Speaker 19 (59:58):
Thanks for taking the call. Listen just hit with the
Al Shaziir and Trevor Lawrence. I do have to say,
I think the NFL had to crack down the optics
of it. But when you when you look at it
in slow motion, he's, like Trevor Lawrence obviously slides and
so he's lowering his body angle and Al Shaziir like
hits him with his forearms more. It wasn't launching, targeting
(01:00:21):
like he let what he hit him with the crown
of his helmet. You know, Trevor, Lawrence is sliding and
so he's leaning back and you're coming in as a linebacker.
I mean you're gonna make some contact with the quarterback,
you know. So he kind of gives them the forearms shoved,
and of course that's what causes Lawrence that you know,
head goes back, hits the hits the you know the turf,
you know, the field, and that's what caused the concussion.
So I just want to kind of note what he
(01:00:43):
would have had what he would have had to have
done not to get a penalty. It just essentially like
fly over the quarterback and like touch him, you know.
Speaker 2 (01:00:51):
Enough, fair enough stand the line under his stand line.
And we haven't heard from me in a few weeks.
We need to hear from you more often. Look, this
is a multifaceted conversation. He went in with two four
arms at full speed, and this is not al Shear's
first barbecue. In Week two, he punched Roshawn Johnson the
Bears on the sideline the NFL let him off easy.
(01:01:12):
They find him eleven thousand bucks. He did something very
similar to what Miles Garrett did when Miles Garrett tried to,
you know, take off Mason Rudolph helmet and swung the helmet.
And this is a situation now. I think it's his
third event and there have actually been writers calling him
to be suspended the whole year because the NFL beats
(01:01:33):
their chest about player safety. But then something like this, right,
so you got the floor again. I've just wanted to
add some inflection there.
Speaker 19 (01:01:41):
Boy taking there is a track record number of different precedents,
so it's not the man's first rodeo. But what I'm
saying is in fairness, we do have the other argument
saying football is football, and you continue to and I
agree with these kind of rule changes surrounding targeting so
we don't have these catastrophic injuries. But where can a
defensive player hit the offensive player, particularly when they're crouching
(01:02:05):
or go You know that they're not kind of straight
up now with the quarterback once they go into their slide,
you know it's clear they're trying to get down, but
you would just essentially, how does that does he just
step over him and like touch him with his hands
and then so like he's down. You know, you really
the defensive player. Once that quarterback starts to slide, you
(01:02:25):
really don't have a way to tack well, you.
Speaker 2 (01:02:28):
Know, Andre, various players have a different He's given himself up.
You tap him on the head, run by. I mean
every week quarterback slide every game. Right, they're taught to slide,
they're taught to Steve Young talked about it. This isn't new,
and quarterbacks don't want to get hit. I mean unless
you want to have a short career. So you raise
a question. It's really almost sort of rhetorical. Everybody's got
(01:02:49):
to find their own way to do it. Anything else tonight, Andre, Bernie,
last one I got to make.
Speaker 9 (01:02:54):
It's window dressing.
Speaker 19 (01:02:56):
People have noted Bill Belichick he's not going to Carolina.
Speaker 2 (01:02:59):
Then I think it's about still have it.
Speaker 16 (01:03:01):
You want to pass Sula.
Speaker 19 (01:03:02):
He wants to keep himself relevant, like give him you
know what I mean, pr people keep them relevant. Now,
there's gonna be a lot of jobs open on the
coaching care so he'll land one of them and we'll
see what he can do without Tom Brady thanks taking time, Bernie.
Speaker 2 (01:03:13):
Hey man, don't don't be a stranger. Andre been a
minute since you checked in eight seven, seven ninety nine
on Fox eight seven, seven, nine, nine sixty six Street
six nine to minut hours off and running Kyle here
in Las Vegas. Welcome back, Kyle. How's it going well, sir?
Speaker 3 (01:03:27):
Burning two weeks in a row and here you go, mana,
keep it up, keep it up. Hey, So look, hass
off to the boys at UNOV. They came out, they tried,
they played, got a good year, like I said, like
I said last week to you, they are a few
skilled players away and maybe two years away from actually
(01:03:47):
getting to that big deal.
Speaker 2 (01:03:49):
I'm concerned Barry Odom's leaving. What are your thoughts?
Speaker 3 (01:03:52):
You know what? I am concerned for that too. But
here's here's the thing, though, I think UNLV will do
everything under the power, under their son, under their power,
under their belt to try to keep him and try
to keep him, to keep that school prestige going. I mean,
I know momentum is just a makeshift work, but you
know he has the ability to get those kids to
(01:04:13):
play hard, something that it's been for almost thirty years
that I've been here, that hasn't been done. So we've
seen them play good, we've seen them play well. They
started off some years fot to know and then just
complete chaos at the end of the season.
Speaker 2 (01:04:30):
Well, the big thing is he got horses in here
from SEC schools. Oh yeah, and that's I mean, you know,
Pete Roe said at best, coaching college football is like
driving a stage coach without the horses. He ain't going forward.
He got the horses ain't here. Okay, what are your
thoughts on our topics tonight?
Speaker 3 (01:04:45):
So okay, so really quickly, I'm going to go off
topic one second. Thomas Thomas Brown's first game today? How
you think he does with the Bears? That is that? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:04:57):
Oh, there's just no way. There's just no way to know.
It's a short number. Uh So that yeah, stick.
Speaker 3 (01:05:05):
He literally was offensive coordinator to now he's the head
Internet head coach. So I mean, he's going to have
his work cut out for him this week, and especially
going against a division opponent. So we're we're sorry, you guess,
sou Francisco. We're looking to potentially play a play the
(01:05:25):
Dance with Kyle Shanahan. That's what I'm thinking. They're they're
looking to get Kyle Shanahan somehow, some way, whether it
be via trades and draft picks, whether it be just
a straight up coach coach trade. But you know, I
think that's what that's going through. And as far as
like the plan that the flag planning goes, Hey, let
the kids run out the tunnel with the flag beforehand,
(01:05:47):
and if they win, they beat them on the floor.
You take the flag, you run with it around. You
don't plan it, but to take it back to your
locker room at the end of the day and be
done with it.
Speaker 2 (01:05:56):
That's so good. That's a damn good happy medium.
Speaker 3 (01:06:00):
Bill Belichick's not going to UNC. I wish people would
stop with that that that's that's a load of crap.
And everybody knows that he's only playing the field to
see what everybody else cards. Hold. If you've ever played Texas,
hold him, you're bluff the call. Your bluff the call.
You're bluff the call. You get everybody to go all
in and then get up. I got pocketations. I'm going
(01:06:21):
this way. You take the bet and you take the
pot and you go home. That's what I think you
and C's got. UNC's not going to take him he's
going to pull Dan Hurley if he's going to act
like he's going there the visits and then oh, y'all
thought I was coming here?
Speaker 2 (01:06:34):
Nah nah, catch he can't, he can't catch Don Shula
at a right, great stuff, Kyle, don't be stranger, Marnning.
She's got to get tell the callers, Mark and Maryland,
welcome back. Who are you hi?
Speaker 9 (01:06:49):
Bernie?
Speaker 2 (01:06:49):
Always a pleasure, Thank you, sir.
Speaker 9 (01:06:52):
I'm very passionate about these two topics. Planning the fat
the flag is the epitome of bad sports SHP, especially
on an opposing field. You can do it on your field,
of course, but it will always cause a riot because
players will won't be disrespected like that. But my problem
with this whole thing is the coaches allow this thing.
(01:07:14):
The coaches should should not allow their players. The players
are running the game. It's tawney, it's amiliating, it's not football.
It turns my stomach when.
Speaker 20 (01:07:24):
I see it.
Speaker 9 (01:07:25):
Okay, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Okay,
I can enjoy the game, and then when I see that,
I lose respect for it. Okay, especially the coaches, because
they're supposed to be a grooming young men.
Speaker 17 (01:07:40):
Into responsible role models.
Speaker 3 (01:07:42):
Now.
Speaker 9 (01:07:44):
Enough on that. Now the second topic is the quarterbacks
being hit. Now, I grew up with Sonny Jergison and
Billy Kimper. The NFL changed the rules to bring in
the casual trad when they had cuff the corner and
devalue the running backs. Okay, I understanding the quarterback is
(01:08:04):
the most valuable commodity. I saw all of our Arrington
knock out Troy Aikman. Okay, with that hit, there was
a vicious hit. Okay, but you know, I'm kind of
in the middle of the road. Now, I'm an old
school guy. But quarterbacks have to be protected but not coddled.
There's a fine line with that.
Speaker 3 (01:08:24):
You know.
Speaker 9 (01:08:25):
Back in the day, you had you had to have
a quality quarterback because a quality second string quarterback because
the first thing quarterback wasn't gonna make it through the season. Okay,
Bob Grisi or Marl Okay, everybody had that. But now
it's different. I mean, and I believe in protecting the
quarterbacks because they're in a vulnerable position. That's why the
(01:08:48):
left tackle is the second most valuable position, because it's
the blind side of the quarterback when you're looking downfeeling
all of that and some of these guys going with
the intention of knocking these guys out. When you got
a three hundred pound guy running under five flat, you know,
trying to plant this quarterback. No, no, no, but you
(01:09:11):
got to find a balance. So that's what I'm all right.
Speaker 2 (01:09:14):
That's you. Appreciate both both good points. Thanks Mark. We'll
talk to you getting down the road. Lynn and san Diego,
welcome back. Good eating, sir.
Speaker 3 (01:09:22):
Heay, thank you, Bernie.
Speaker 9 (01:09:23):
I'll be getting busy time, but I love you and
I respect you enough and your show to call man.
Speaker 2 (01:09:30):
Appreciate what you bring out of me.
Speaker 10 (01:09:33):
You get that out of me.
Speaker 2 (01:09:35):
Appreciate it. Buddy. Pick any of the topics and where
would you like to take it?
Speaker 21 (01:09:40):
Uh yeah, okay, so uh if you want to try
to do something about it, halfway decent. I say, as
soon as a quarterback, uh become a runner, let off
bets be off, Let allow holding allowed, shocking the offensive
guys that grab the hell out of whoever's going near
their quarter back and throw him off the field, whatever.
Speaker 9 (01:10:02):
Let the big guy get aggressive.
Speaker 3 (01:10:04):
As soon as the quarterback become.
Speaker 9 (01:10:05):
A runner, I think it will help.
Speaker 3 (01:10:08):
I don't know what you think what.
Speaker 2 (01:10:10):
That actually is in the books within reason, you can't
head hunt, and there's certain things you can't do. But
when the guy gives himself up and starts to slide,
what happens then?
Speaker 9 (01:10:21):
Yeah, see, now that's discretion on the player. If if
you're gonna, you know, hit him or whatever, just don't
be vicious and they might let you.
Speaker 21 (01:10:31):
Slide, but you're gonna be trying to kill the guy
and head hunting.
Speaker 9 (01:10:35):
You deserve whatever you get from the rest. There's a
way to do it. You just got to be sly
about it. Don't be obvious trying to kill.
Speaker 13 (01:10:41):
Him after he done already gave up.
Speaker 3 (01:10:44):
That's crazy. I can't do that as a player, fair enough.
Speaker 2 (01:10:47):
Any thoughts on the flag planning.
Speaker 3 (01:10:50):
I don't like it.
Speaker 21 (01:10:50):
One bit because Bernie, when I was growing up playing sports,
you was always taught to take the high road, man,
And it's what's the point if you eat the team,
check their hands and let him know. I appreciate you
guys competing, but we just were better than you are
on this given day. That's good enough.
Speaker 9 (01:11:10):
Like Tyson, he was awesome.
Speaker 21 (01:11:12):
He would knock the hir cut of people, but he
would always help him up and and whisper sweet nothing
in their ear.
Speaker 2 (01:11:21):
Hey, Lynn, buddy, always a pleasure man. You enjoy your weekend.
Thanks for checking in. Okay, appreciate you. Lynn H. Bryce
in Texas, Welcome back. How are you.
Speaker 3 (01:11:31):
How's it going? Man?
Speaker 2 (01:11:32):
Good?
Speaker 14 (01:11:34):
So I got some other baseball rules for rob Manfred, Uh, why.
Speaker 2 (01:11:39):
Not, let's get let's have him.
Speaker 8 (01:11:41):
I think the picture should.
Speaker 14 (01:11:42):
Get a un reverse card. That way, if he gets
the hormeworn knocked on him, he just says that reverse
and gets at battle over again.
Speaker 2 (01:11:49):
Here we go.
Speaker 14 (01:11:49):
I think i's how to do a split cup challenge
at first base if you want to steal suck it.
I think these are great. You're gonna make it the
Savannah bananas or whatever they're called.
Speaker 2 (01:12:00):
You know, you know what I think you have to do. Bryce.
You know how stadiums don't give they don't sell beer
after the seventh inning. Yeah, I think they should be
free beer after the seventeen What do you think about that?
Speaker 14 (01:12:12):
Yeah, even to the players, real.
Speaker 2 (01:12:14):
Absolutely, especially with the players.
Speaker 16 (01:12:17):
Yeah, let's go for it.
Speaker 14 (01:12:20):
As far as flag planning goes, it's after the game.
And so if the players are going to do it,
they're going to do it anyway.
Speaker 8 (01:12:30):
And if you're.
Speaker 14 (01:12:31):
Worried about like people getting in fight or whatnot, that's assault.
And if the player wants the risk getting in legal
trouble for punching out of the player, like, that's on them,
and let the teams and the NCAA handle however they
handle the assault. But it's good entertainment. And if we've
to keep trying to force this like fake respect on
(01:12:52):
everybody else, everybody's just going to turn to the WWE,
which they're already doing now. Anyways, where we don't get
the say.
Speaker 2 (01:12:59):
I I don't I don't necessarily disagree with the premise
of what you're saying, but we have to keep one
thing in mind that there are rules in place to
prevent taunting during the game, and flag planting is a
form of taunting. I think it's it's it's a provocative taunt.
(01:13:21):
The game's over, there's no rules around, there's no roughs around,
and so it's it's the law of under tenant consequences
that leads to that. You follow me, So that's that's fine.
You got the last word. Go ahead.
Speaker 8 (01:13:33):
No, no, no, you're fine.
Speaker 14 (01:13:34):
I see you're coming from I just think after the
final whistle's blown, it's kind of us in the hands
for the players and coaches of what happens. And it's
something illegal happens, like getting in fight, so whatnot. And
then it's up to them to decide what actions are
being taken. But anyway, and then the last thing on
the Trevor Lawrence say, I think that we should get
(01:13:56):
rid of the quarterback flag altogether, get rid of the
gray area. The NFL and it'self no favors by having
this flight subjective rule. And I think more once the
quarterback decides the run outside the pocket, he's a runner,
I think he should be treated just like a wide
receiver or a running back.
Speaker 2 (01:14:13):
All right, good stuff, man, appreciate you check it in.
Still time to get in eight seven, seven, nine to
nine on Fox eight seven seven nine six six three
six nine flag planning the alsheer hit on Trevor Lawrence
the suspension. What are your thoughts or quarterbacks too coddled?
And how about this knucklehead gimmick the golden at bat.
(01:14:36):

All right, wrapping it up on the midnight hour, let's
get to these last two callers. Mark in Iowa joins us.
Welcome Mark, How are you hi, Bernie? How are you
all good?
Speaker 20 (01:15:09):
Hey?
Speaker 15 (01:15:09):
You get a long time listener.
Speaker 16 (01:15:10):
Hey.
Speaker 15 (01:15:11):
I want to say something about the Shire hit. I
want to compare it to do you see Cooper de
Jean wide up Derrick Henry?
Speaker 3 (01:15:20):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:15:20):
He It was a classic high school where they taught
us how to tackle a high school where you go
low pads, pick him up by the knees and dump them. Yeah. Correct.
Speaker 15 (01:15:27):
Jerror could have done that to Trevor Lawrence. He chose
the lead with a forearm and.
Speaker 9 (01:15:33):
That was a dirty hit.
Speaker 2 (01:15:34):
Sorry, true, No, you're not wrong, you're not.
Speaker 15 (01:15:39):
Yeah, that's the only thing I want to bring that.
As far as flag planning, I hate I hate the
middle of the field of flag planning. I think the
first thing you should do is run to the student section.
Is that's where it's gonna hurt most. Run to the
student section. Yeah, plan it right in front of the
students and then do that. That's the best place for it.
Speaker 2 (01:15:58):
Mark, No, I think it's the next idea. Thank you
for checking in. Don't be a stranger. Karl and Vegas
said a similar thing. It's a good happy medium. Run
you know what, you want to show off your flag
running around the stadium showed off, hold it loud and provut.
But you don't have the plant in the center of
the field that she said, insult injury. We wrap it up,
ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. Wake the neighbors, Alert
(01:16:20):
the kids, Grandpa, put on pants. We welcome in Manuel
from Guardina. What's up?
Speaker 8 (01:16:24):
Manuel just won't to celebrate.
Speaker 17 (01:16:29):
Hey, Bernie, great stuff as usual. But I have a
little ramp because what I wanted to cover was you
guys always do the uh that one on the Saturday night?
What type of.
Speaker 3 (01:16:45):
Okay?
Speaker 17 (01:16:46):
So, man, I don't know if you heard.
Speaker 20 (01:16:48):
But about two weeks ago.
Speaker 17 (01:16:50):
In La County there was an insurance sproad scam.
Speaker 20 (01:16:55):
Okay, they had a collected of good amount thousands upwards
of thousands right on damaged cars from a bear well
after the investigators got a wind of everything.
Speaker 17 (01:17:11):
They put a search warr into the house of the.
Speaker 9 (01:17:13):
People right in the middle.
Speaker 11 (01:17:16):
Dude, you can't even.
Speaker 3 (01:17:17):
Make this stuff up.
Speaker 17 (01:17:17):
Bernie, the bear suit was on the ground like an
old movie where you know the bear furs kicking in
and they busted those idiots. So I want to tell
those idiots in La County what type of brand new
fooler you nice?
Speaker 2 (01:17:33):
You've done? Man, Well, listen, we're up against it, but
always appreciate you checking in during the midnight hour. I
want to thank all the callers. We had a lot
of the regulars and some new ones. Don't be a stranger.
We try to put out thought provoking content pertaining to
the world of sports, but things that are also on
the periphery, and I like it when people don't agree.
(01:17:53):
Some people think flag planning is great. Some people think
it's disrespectful. As far as the hit on ol on
Trevor Lawrence hate the NFL is too soft. On the
other hand, hey, this is head hunting real quickly. Just
the thought on flag planning, whether they do it or not,
the act of planning a flag on your opponent's on turf,
you're gonna trigger something. Man. Just look what happened in Columbus.
(01:18:15):
It's the law of unattended consequences. Dereck Moore, he was
one of the edge rushers from Michigan. He runs out
of the tumble with the tunnel with the flag right
into the middle of a sea red and all of
a sudden he gets the flag ripped out of his
hand by Jack Sawyer. Same thing happened in Clemson with
South Carolina. Same thing happened in Tallahassee with the Florida Gators.
(01:18:39):
All this madness is now gonna You're gonna get the
attention of the NCAA and the school you know, commissioners
in the school presidents, and it's just gonna be you watch,
and both schools got one hundred thousand dollars. Fine by way,
all right, thanks to everybody on that up next Breathe
three Movie Round Table. Keep it Bernie Frattle Show on

Speaker 1 (01:19:07):

not one.
Speaker 1 (01:19:43):
Not two, but three.
Speaker 2 (01:19:47):
Sports. It's entertainment.
Speaker 4 (01:19:48):
It's good, It's Breeze three.
Speaker 2 (01:19:53):
Alrighty, take it away, alrighty.
Speaker 22 (01:19:56):
So earlier this week, Browns quarterback Jamis always like his
quotes and his postgame always seemed to like go viral,
you know, when he was on the Buccaneers like you know,
eating W's and then even like I think, like a
month and a half ago, he said, you can't say
this guy is the limit when people are on the moon.
So this week he said, I'm just praying for the
(01:20:18):
Lord to deliver me from pick sixes after he threw
two in Monday Night's loss against the Broncos. So it
got me thinking of some like memorable movie lines like so,
because I feel like Jamis is obviously going to be
a memorable you know, just like a media probably personality
eventually when he retires, and I feel like these quotes
(01:20:38):
probably going to live on forever. So I'm going to
start off with Jaws. You're going to need a bigger boat. Yep, yep,
said by obviously Chief Brody and Carl Gottlieb, who co
wrote the screenplay, revealed like how the origin of that
quote came about. And I guess when they were filming,
like it was, there was a lot of is shoes
(01:21:00):
with production, and so the crew was working off a
barge that carried the equipment and craft services, and then
they had a smaller support boat. But the crew members
complained that the support boat was too small, so they
couldn't fit everything, and they kind of had to go
back and forth like a ton of times. And so
you know, Schneider eventually like picked up this thing and
(01:21:21):
started sneaking it into different takes and so then it
just kind of came up and then they just kept
it in there.
Speaker 23 (01:21:26):
So that was I didn't know that.
Speaker 2 (01:21:28):
Yeah, So that was a powerful quote. I remember when
Richard Dreyfus said it. It was a real pivotal point
in the movie.
Speaker 5 (01:21:33):
It was Schier who said it, schid Roy Scheider, Yes,
And so it was.
Speaker 22 (01:21:38):
Like an hour into the movie.
Speaker 2 (01:21:40):
I got mixed up with this was no bolting accident
that was.
Speaker 3 (01:21:44):
So yeah.
Speaker 22 (01:21:45):
So it was like an hour into the movie and
it was right after like we saw like the Shark
for like the first time. So that was my first one.
And then I went with this shining so here comes
Johnny so and the line wasn't from the script or
from Stephen King novel. It was an ad lib from
Jack Nicholson wo And it was obviously like a kind
(01:22:06):
of like tribute to Johnny Carson. And so the reason
why a lot of people say that they just kept
it in there was because Kubrick like he lived in
like England at the time, so he like missed the
reference altogether. So they feel like if he would have
actually known, maybe they would have like removed it from
the movie. Wow, since he was like I was reading
(01:22:29):
about like he's like he was very like strict on
what he wanted and he was just one of those
like directors, you know. So that was my second one.
And then I went with a classic Casablanca. And I
feel like like some of these movies like you can
go with like different like there there's at least three
or four different quotes that you can go on, right,
So I went with Louis, I think this is the
(01:22:50):
beginning of a beautiful friendship as the last line of
the film, when Rick and Captain Louis Renault walk across
the tarmac and it's all like and it was just
I felt like it was just a great way to.
Speaker 14 (01:23:03):
End the movie.
Speaker 22 (01:23:04):
And actually, like there was two different lines that it
could have been. The first one was Louis, I might
have known you'd mix your patriotism with a little larceny
or the you know, Louis, I think this is the
beginning of a beautiful friendship. And so obviously they went
with the second one, but both Humphrey Bogart had to
be brought in back to dub that line since they
had gone with the other one before. Oh wow, so
(01:23:25):
that was a little bit interesting. And then so I
also read that they actually kept like both of them
like walking off into the fog in case they were
going to do like a sequel to the movie called Brazzaville,
which would have followed both of them and like as
they flee, you know, with like as they freed the
French or whatever, but the timing just never came about.
(01:23:48):
So those are my three. So I just went in Jaws,
The Shining and then Casablanca for my three movies. And
like I said, I feel like with those movies, there's
a ton of different quotes in that.
Speaker 2 (01:23:59):
Yeah, and I know that the Castle Blanca they had
dubbed it thirty days later after the movie had already
gone to post productions thirty days. Oh my god.
Speaker 5 (01:24:07):
Yeah, that's crazy.
Speaker 22 (01:24:08):
And how do you like even figure out, like, oh,
we're gonna just change this one line. It's like the
most powerful line ever, one of the more powerful Linesn't
that crazy?
Speaker 23 (01:24:15):
Pretty crazy?
Speaker 22 (01:24:17):
Okay, So then I'll just throw it to Mark.
Speaker 23 (01:24:18):
Now, So my breeze threes movies, I'm going to start
with The Green Mile, and I'll just say for the
two thousand people who might not have seen it, because
there's a bunch of reactors that I watch on YouTube
that are always reacting to movies. Green Mile is one
of them. There's a particular thing that happens to the
guard Percy in the movie, and he's sitting on the
(01:24:41):
floor and he's in a daze and one of his
coworkers walks up to him and they're trying to ask
him to Percy, Percy, are you there? And the guy goes,
I think his cheese has slipt off his cracker.
Speaker 4 (01:24:53):
So that kind of that.
Speaker 2 (01:24:54):
Was a really powerful movie. He's one of those movies.
It was three hours, but she didn't care because well,
look at the story that was told.
Speaker 5 (01:25:03):
It was great.
Speaker 23 (01:25:04):
It was great. So that was my first one, The
Green Wild, and I went way back to one of
my favorite movies, Goldfinger and Goldfingers. James Bond on this
plate and he has a laser beam on him and
Goldfinger says to the bad guy, Goldfinger, do you want
me to talk? And Goldfinger goes, no, mister Bond, I
(01:25:26):
want you to die. So that's one of my favorite
lines of him. No, I want you to die so
because he's in a particular play with a laser beam,
but to kill him. And my third movie that I
thought about one of my favorites is Young Frankenstein. And
like bred just said, there's a couple from Young Frankensell
that I could think about. Roll Roll Rolling the Hay
(01:25:46):
that's one of them, and then put the Candle back
that's another one. And then Hello Handsome. That's a couple
of lines from that movie that just cracked me up
every time I watch it.
Speaker 2 (01:25:57):
This Sick mel Brooks movie, Marty heldman right members walking
around with that hump back and they kept saying, how'd
you get that hump? Because what hump?
Speaker 3 (01:26:05):
What a set?
Speaker 2 (01:26:05):
Like ten times in the movie.
Speaker 23 (01:26:06):
And then one more from Young Frankenstein Walk This Way,
which coincidentally, the band Aerosmith was on a break from
recording and they went to watch that movie and at
that moment when they saw that that line that Marty says,
they went out and created the song walk This Way
because of that, because of that line. So that's just
(01:26:28):
a you know, pretty cool. Yeah, So that was best
my three Green Mile, Goldfinger, and Young Frankenstein. So Bernie,
what you got?
Speaker 2 (01:26:37):
I don't think minor as good. But but I tell
you what I did. I just decided the first three
movie quotes that popped into my mind, I wasn't gonna
overthink it. I was just gonna use them. And the
only reason I did that is because they had to
be quotes that are prevalent out there. Whether they were impactful,
whether they weren't impactful, they were recognizable and they had
(01:27:01):
been lasting a test of time, even though maybe not
a whole hell of a lot of significance. The first
one has always bothered me. It came from the movie
Godfather too, when Michael Corleone says, keep your friends close,
but your enemies closer. Very part. Okay, people say that
in Lafe I go shut up. Okay, people, you don't
do that. You don't even know how to Why would
people do that? Okay, So anyway, but think about it, people,
(01:27:24):
that was one. It was almost like in The Godfather,
make him an offer he can't refuse, right, people will
say that those have just lasted a test of time.
Feel the dreams. If you build it, he will come.
It's whispering out of the sky. Must have said said
three or four times, and it's at a pivotal point
in the movie. You were saying, what's happening here? How
many times have people stolen that quote over? You know,
(01:27:47):
should the should should the A's cap to Vegas? If
you build it, they will come. If the raiders. I've
heard that line repeated a thousand times. So it's impactful.
It's impactful. Uh, And it was impactful in the movie
The Last One for me. And again, I promise this
has no context whatsoever, but it popped into my mind
because back when I'm watching Tom Hanks is Forrest come
(01:28:09):
two thirds of that movie. I want, what the hell
excuse me? I got a little fraud in my throat?
Hang on, sorry about that. So here's the deal. I'm
watching this movie. I'm like, what am I watching? He's
playing football at Alabama, he's in the Army, he's Bubba
Gump Shrimp Company. He's running five hundred mile race, growing
(01:28:31):
a beard. But the quote, you know, and his mom
was Sally Field. My mom always said life was like
a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.
It just popped into my mind. So those are my three,
you know, not trying to have any context or any
particular significance, just those. If you mentioned those quotes, even
the casual moviegoer, they're gonna know what movies are from.
Speaker 22 (01:28:54):
I was gonna say, even like run forst Run like
you just I used to say that in school, like
run Forest, Run randomly, pe and stuff.
Speaker 23 (01:29:01):
I was just thinking about that too. And some of
my other I guess missionables would be Old Brother, Where
arthou where?
Speaker 3 (01:29:10):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:29:11):
That's George Clooney movie.
Speaker 23 (01:29:14):
Yeah, so one of his couple of his lines in
that movie, We're in a tight spot, and that was
one other things he used to say. And then when
he was there were he was shopping and he told
the guy, I want Dapper Dan. Well I only have FOP.
Well I don't want FOP. I want Dapper Dan. I
can get it to you in two weeks. Well, you're
(01:29:34):
just a geographical anomaly. So that that was that kind
of that little band was just to crack me up.
And then Pee Wee's Playhouse. I'm trying to use the phone.
Oh that was big adventure, A big adventure.
Speaker 4 (01:29:46):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:29:47):
This scene in the biker bar, which yeah.
Speaker 23 (01:29:49):
And then Wayne's World Swing.
Speaker 2 (01:29:52):
Oh yeah, there was one. This is more of a
movie scene. I don't know if you guys ever saw
the Chris Rock movie I'm Gonna Get You Sucker when
he he wants to order one rib.
Speaker 5 (01:30:01):
Oh yeah, I remember that.
Speaker 3 (01:30:02):
Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:30:03):
And by the way, who was the cook behind the bar,
Jim Brown?
Speaker 1 (01:30:07):
Oh wow, okay, you said you have.
Speaker 2 (01:30:08):
He walks in, he goes, how about your ribs? They're
three dollars? Howbouy do you get six? It was like,
so it's like fifty cents a rib. Yeah, it's like
fifty cents a rib. Okay, I'll take one one rack. No,
I want one rib because you want one rib? Yeah,
remember that, and then he wants to diet coke and
for tens. Anyway, I got off on attention. All right,
(01:30:29):
good job. Everybody appreciate it. Obviously. We all love movies,
and movies are a big part of our life, and
movies manage also very much to make the way to
the lexicon of the business world and society, and certainly
on my radio show, I've gosh, I've talked about movies
for over twenty years, So appreciate everyone's efforts a lot

All right back at the Bernie Frattle Show Foxsports Radio
and you get that frog out of my throat. Come
to you live from the tyrac dot com studios here
in Las Vegas. I want to have a quick PostScript
on one of the topics we had then I during
the midnight hour, having to do with the al asi
(01:31:56):
El Sheer hit on Trevor Lawrence. Because there, there, there
is what took place. Then the perspectives that the callers
who remember his how what football used to look like
and what it looks like now, and how the NFL
has proclaimed this overture and their their serious intent on
(01:32:18):
players safety right, and yet how much of it is
real and how much of it is pr And here's
why I say that, because much like the flag planning
triggers events, this also triggers events. So on Tuesday, the
Texans in their GM Nick Asserio, he was obviously defending
(01:32:39):
his player, He called out the NFL for the three
game suspension and the irony. His reasoning was, He's trying
he believes the NFL is trying to paint disease out
share as a villain. Okay, is he is?
Speaker 20 (01:32:55):
He?
Speaker 2 (01:32:55):
Does he have a point? Is he right? Because the league,
the NFL made a hell of a push on Tuesday morning,
the on a press release and they even had excerpts
of a letter that was written to Alsher from former
NFL retired player John Runyon that paint Alsher as a victim,
as a villain. Excuse me, here's a quick couple of
(01:33:18):
sentences from that letter. Quote. Your lack of sportsmanship and
respect for the game of football and for those who play,
coach and enjoy watching it is troubling and does not
reflect the core values of the NFL. Your continued disregard
for NFL playing rules puts the health and safety of
(01:33:38):
both you and your opponents and jeopardy and will not
be tolerated. Unquote quote for the league to make some
of the commentary that they made about lack of sportsmanship,
this is Nick Cassius. Quote Now, lack of coachability, lack
of paying attention to the rules. Caserio said, quite frankly,
that's embarrassing. The picture that's been painted about his ease
is pure BS. He didn't say bs. He said the
(01:34:01):
full word.
Speaker 3 (01:34:02):
Whether we like it or not.
Speaker 2 (01:34:03):
Cancierra may have a point. The league is trying to
paint al Scheer to look like a bad guy because
they want the suspension to look like the right decision.
And as part of the NFL press release, you know,
it was mentioned that al Sheheer has had multiple offenses
for personal files, other sportsmanship related rules, other sportsmanship related violations,
(01:34:25):
and not just this season, in recent seasons. But the
statement doesn't mention any so why not list them? You look,
this got weird. It got a little over the top here.
One of the callers say, Trevor Lawrence is not for
the year. I think it was Jerome. Is there an
excellent called by Jerome Charleston. And so this is a
debate that's going to go back and forth. You hear
(01:34:48):
my comment. It's not tongue in cheek, it's real. Okay.
Players sued. They sued the NFL for a billion dollars
on this whole concussion thing. So the NFL is, okay,
you know what you want to do that then we're
gonna we're gonna shift things around. We don't really like
they might. The NFL is on their way to being
a twenty five billion dollars league. That doesn't mean Roger
Cadell wants to part with a billion. So I don't
know what the happy medium is. Fortunately, these things don't
(01:35:10):
happen that often if you really consider it. In the
grand scheme of things, they don't really happen that often.
But this one, the more you look at it, no
one really comes out looking good. You just can't say
they do. And the product of the NFL is simply
different now that it used to be. But you have
the event with Triggers afterward, and the Texans and their
(01:35:31):
management going into their spin, former NFL player John Running
going into his spin, and you know, players from both
sides going into theirs and reporters and journalists, and oh,
by the way, I found out that after John Running
sent that letter, there was perhaps some accusations allegedly of
hypocrisy on behalf of John Running because someone found video
(01:35:52):
of him doing similar things. I guess I don't know.
I haven't seen the video, Tay, what I am looking
forward to. Okay, we're a few hours away from the
ultimate college football playoff ranking being decided, which we will
be able to watch on TV Sunday morning at nine
am Pacific noon Eastern, and we'll see what the first
(01:36:13):
twelve team postseason bracket looks like. Who made it, who's
on the outside looking in, and based on what we
think we know now. If you're a Big ten fan,
it looks like you're getting four teams in. I think
this as solid as can be Oregon, Penn State, Ohio State,
and Alabama. If you are the SEC, it looks like
(01:36:35):
you're getting four teams in Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, and you
may not like this looks like it's going to be
Alabama the ACC. Assuming SMU wins, I'm sure they're in.
If they don't win, they could still get in. I
(01:36:56):
don't know, but right now it looks like SIME Big twelve.
I just feel like Arizona State takes care of business
against Iowa State. Could I be wrong, sure, but the
Big Twelve would get one and be either Arizona State
or Iowa State. De Mountain West, Boise State. Take your
victory lap you are in. And as far as the Independence,
of course, Notre Dame. Now the ACC, the Big Twelve,
(01:37:17):
those championship games are winner go home for Clemson, SMU
and Arizona State, Iowa State respectively. Now the Big Ten
title game Oregon and Penn State and SEC Texas and Georgia,
either one of those teams are all four of those
teams are playoff bound even with the loss, but the
winner will get a first round by, which I think
is I think at this, you know, given the link
(01:37:39):
to this season now they start in August now, and
for a lot of these teams that be going into
their thirteen to fourteen game of the season, I think
the first bound round by is a little bit more
COVID in that people might realize here's the reason this
is all happening, and this is the reason why this
is so important. Do you know that if you qualify,
you qualify for this tournament, this twelve team tournament. The
(01:38:02):
conferences are going to split a total of one hundred
and sixteen million dollars starting for starting with four million
for each school that just makes the playoff and for
each school that reaches the quarterfinal. Okay, that's nothing to
sneed at Do you think they could use that money? Yes?
They can. Now. Even before last Tuesday Nights Rankings revealed
there were people campaigning for the playoff spots. It's almost
(01:38:24):
like a political race, right the a SEC commissioner Jim Phillips,
he made the case for his conference to potentially have
multiple bids, particularly if SMU were to lose to Clemson. Now,
Clemson's got three losses. Please, if Clemson loses, they're not
the committee's not taking a four loss team, especially if
it's Clemson. But if f SMU were to lose, they're
(01:38:46):
currently ranked number eight. They were to lose to Clemson,
I'm guessing Clemson would be in and would they take SMU.
I don't know, but the commissioner said, if you're inside
that top twelve or so you're projected to be in,
it would be very alarming for you. By the way,
SMU is currently ranked eighth. To be moved out because
you played an extra game, why everyone else is sitting home?
(01:39:06):
That's going to be the new narrative. Do you penalize
a team for making it to the conference championship game
even if they lose? You cannot quote here's this quote.
You cannot and should not be penalized for having to
play a thirteenth game after a very long season. If
you qualify for that game, now go to o'lane Kiffin
went on Twitter and tweeted a lengthy note, which he
(01:39:28):
tagged the official College Football Playoff account, laying out his
reasoning for why the Rebels should make the postseason over
Alabama and South Carolina. He said, quote, clearly Old Miss
should be in the playoff over Alabama, but Bama is
the bigger brand and more likely we'll get in over
(01:39:49):
Old Miss. Yeah he didn't sound too better at all,
did he. But that's Lane Kiffin for you. But you
know what, I'm not so sure he's wrong. He's wrong.
I wouldn't have said it following him. I don't think
that's a good look. Look a little bitter and that's
not a good look. But I'm not so sure he's wrong.
He's sticking out for a school. So look, if the
playoff were to start today, and we know it doesn't,
(01:40:11):
the seeds would be Oregon number one, Texas number two,
SMU number three, Boise number four. Those are your four.
Boise I think is stayed in the fourth spot. Oregon
has to beat Penn State, SMU is going to have
to be Clemson, and Texas will have to be Georgia
to keep that. But let's say that just holds. This
is where it gets fun. You tell me unite end
(01:40:32):
of this. Starting December twentieth, number nine, Tennessee with face
number eight Ohio State, the winner would travel to Oregon.
The following week, number twelve, Arizona State with face number
five Penn State. The winner would travel to Boise State.
The following week Alabama checks in at eleven. They'd face
off against Notre Dame, who's currently sixth. They'd get to
(01:40:53):
go to SMU who's third, and finally Indiana, they'd have
to go to Georgia. The winner Indiana ten ranked ten
seeded Georgia seventh, would go play Texas. That to mention that,
so Georgia, Texas might have to play Georgia for the
third time in the season. Ohio State might have to
play Oregon for a second time. This is gonna get fun,
(01:41:15):
It's gonna get interesting, and yeah, there's gonna be arguments,
but that's what happens. It's not perfect, but it's better
than it was. The truth of the matter is is
that you have a situation now for at least it's
championship based. I hated the prior format. I always called
it the made for TV Invitational. You had four teams
(01:41:38):
and you had five power conferences. Insert your own Florida
state comment here. Now at least they got rid of that.
At the end of the show, I will share with
you one last time which of the championship games. There's
five conference championship games on Saturday, and the stakes are simple,
and I will explain to you how each one of
(01:41:59):
the will determine what happens when the when the committee
makes your final selections on Sunday morning. We covered it all,
including the other football spilled, fut b o L It's time,
Chris Purfetts, World of Soccer.
Speaker 4 (01:42:15):
The greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drum. It's
all here in this report from the World of.
Speaker 1 (01:42:34):
Soccer, Bernie.
Speaker 24 (01:42:36):
We got a lot to talk about as the MLS
season is about to end. The MLS Cup Playoff is
on Saturday for PM eastern one o'clock Pacific as La
Galaxy takes on the New York Red Bulls in Carson, California.
This has been a very surprising MLS Cup playoffs, a
very topsy turvy one that saw the Inter Miami the
(01:43:00):
prohibitive favorite through this entire MLS Cup playff getting knocked
out in round one by Atlanta United in three in
three games. Atlanta had to come through the wild card
around as the number nine seed and beat Miami, then
probably went off on to lose to Orlando City. And
the other surprise than being from the other side of
(01:43:22):
the bracket a seven seed Red Bull New York smashing Columbus,
the defending champion in two games, then turning around beating
New York City fceed beating Orlando to make it to
the final. It's a bit of a miraculous turn on
for the Red Bulls. They had only one victory in
their final eleven matches across all competitions, really stumbling into
(01:43:47):
these playoffs almost completely drunk, not sure what they were doing,
and somehow defied all those odds and they have become
the lowest seeded team ever to reach the MLS Cup final.
Head coach Sando Schwarz is a first year at the
helmet already at the Cup, and it has been one
of those things that just defies a lot of reason
(01:44:09):
for Red Bulls. They are averaging a forty four point
five percent possession in the regular season and fewer than
forty percent in these playoffs, and yet somehow when they
win possession, it's usually an advantage position, advantageous positions where
they're able to just make scoring opportunities work for them
and just keeps the opponent out of their own goal.
(01:44:32):
And yet on the flip side, LA Galaxy is one
of those teams that has just played incredibly well all year,
really stealing the stage from their younger counterpart, LAFC, which was,
by and by MLS Cups and MLS Cup appearances a
much suddenly let's just say, popular team in LA. It
(01:44:52):
certainly helps they actually play in near the Coliseum near
downtown Los Angeles, near usc in the heart of Los
Angeles versus Carson, which is a bit of a drive
for most people out there. It helps that they had
a passionate fan base and a lot of stars coming
through and including Carlos Vella and Gareth Bale. So there
(01:45:13):
was a moment where Galaxy really was kind of forgotten about.
Not so this year. Up until the final days where
LAFC tied them on points and were able to take
the Western Conference thrown from them. Galaxy was leading the chase.
They were one of those teams out there that looked
like they were going to be running away and be
ready to play into Miami come MLS Cup time, and
(01:45:35):
indeed they have been phenomenal, a nineteen goal differential in
the regular season. Twe of those goals coming from Deon Yovelic.
How our bad news came down from them as they
will be missing Ricky Pooge, their midfielder who has seventeen
goals to his own name from the season and just
a really bad blow and hoping that they can maybe
(01:45:56):
get back Marco Reese who is part of the squad
and he's been Marco Reese has been one of those
players you'd watch play in Germany for a really long
time and you're wondering how this guy doesn't have any
hardware to.
Speaker 4 (01:46:09):
His name whatsoever.
Speaker 24 (01:46:10):
Borussia Dortmund obviously being the brides, may never the bride
for so long and really seeking some glory and this
may be his chance to do so. If he is
able to suit up and play, we will see if
he's going to be ready. Galaxy coach Greg Vaney said
that Marco had trained in full back on Friday. He
should be ready to go. He's you know, so this
(01:46:33):
could be the reinforcements Galaxy really needs to stave off
these feisty, feisty Red Bulls. Personally, my money is once
again on a Los Angeles team. I think Galaxy has
it this year and will wait to see what happens
if they can really lift the MLS Cup and or
mind LA that there is a second team in town
and they should not be disrespected that they are the
(01:46:56):
ones with the history and now the players to maybe
tried to lift their first MLS Cup in ten years.
There was another bit of MLS news we should talk about,
and that was the awarding of the MVP, and there
was a little bit of there was a few eyes
that were raised when it was Leonel Messi who took
her home on the MVP, And you might be thinking
(01:47:17):
to yourself, it's Leonel Messi. He clearly deserves the MVP.
But a lot of that conversation comes from the fact
that really only playing in fifty five percent of Inter
Miami's games is a precipitously low number to really consider
for anyone who is a MVP in any sport. If
I told you that a player in the NBA only
played about half the games, you'd say, no way they
(01:47:39):
could be MVP, And if I told you a quarterback
only played in half the games of the National Football League,
no way they could be MVP. But that's just kind
of what the impact of Messi is. I feel like
there's good cases on where he deserves it, and I
also deeply respect the case that he just did not
play enough to really go for the award. But let
(01:48:01):
me go down this is that without Lionel Messi his
thirty six goal contributions twenty goals sixteen assists, the most
of any player in MLS this season, the second closest
with probably Luciano Acosta for FC Cincinnati. But it really,
it really must be stressed that I do not believe
(01:48:23):
Inter Miami is the one who's lifting the supporter shield
or doing all of these amazing things they did in
the regular season without Lionel Messi playing these games.
Speaker 1 (01:48:32):
And yes, maybe.
Speaker 24 (01:48:33):
Those numbers could be a lot bigger if he had
played more of than We're also talking about a man
who's on the tail end of things, and ultimately, at
the end of the day, we have to say it,
this has been about Lionel Messi coming to MLS. Leonel
MLSCI if you will, So it makes sense that the
league would work very hard to make sure that he
gets the trophy at the end of this and he's
been the poster child for this league. Maybe he is
(01:48:55):
not the most valuable player as far as on field
contributions before this league raising the eyebrows of everyone around there,
trying to make it much more of a home home
name to be recognized in the world of soccer. Yeah,
I could understand that for him, He's still doing amazing
things out here even as his rival Christiano Ronaldo does
(01:49:16):
the same thing in Saudi Arabia. That's gonna do it
for the world of soccer. Bernie enjoyed the MLS Cup
on Saturday, and we'll break it all down next time
on the World of Soccer.
Speaker 2 (01:49:25):

Coming up, we wrap up the show and yeah, they
(01:50:27):
are actually a total of nine conference championships games that
are being played this weekend, and five of them, though
exactly five of them that have a direct college football
playoff implication. So we'll examine which of those will have
the most impact on the twelve team bracket so you
can make some sense of this new college football world
(01:50:49):
we are living in. I'm Bernie Fraddle. We're comedy Line

All right, wrapping it up on the Bernie Frattle Show,
Fox Sports Radio, coming to you live from the tyrac
dot com studios here in Las Vegas. For I go
any further, I want to thank my broadcast team back
in Los Angeles. They've been with me since eleven pm
Pacific on Saturday night. Mark and Brianna appreciate all the
hard work keeping us glued together, keeping us on the air,
turning all the dials so we can bring this show
(01:51:36):
to a grateful nation. All right. As I mentioned, there
are nine college football championship games actually being played this week,
and there were a couple. Friday night, Army beat Tulane
thirty five to fourteen. The Boise State UNLV game Boise
holds serve. They beat them on the blue turf twenty
one to seven. They grab a college football playoff spot
(01:52:00):
unless the committee changes their mind. I don't know what
it could change. I suppose right now it looks like
they got a number four seed, which means that even
have a buy. But we're heading into a weekend now
where there's still some things to be decided. All right,
we're coming off of what a week fourteen is in
(01:52:20):
the books. There were some big upsets last weekend that
that had an impact on last Tuesday's latest college football
playoff rankings. And you know, some teams slip, some teams arose.
But now you turn your eyes to Saturday for the
remaining conference championship games. This is the final test that's
(01:52:41):
going to determine which twelve teams are actually contenders or pretenders,
which you'll get a buye, which you'll get find their
way into the tournament, and you know which won't. Right,
simple as that, five of the nine conference championship games
that were played, you know, schedule we played Friday or Saturday,
(01:53:02):
have the direct impact. I've already told you about the
Mountain West game, by the way, tip of the cap.
There are other games too, Marshall, he's going to play,
you know, Louisiana Tech, the Raging Cajun's Tulane. They played Army,
they got beat. I believe Miami of Ohio will play
the Ohio University, not the Ohio State University, Jackson State.
(01:53:24):
I believe they played Friday night as well. But the
big boys, we have to jump to the big boys. Okay,
you got Texas, Georgia, you got Clemson, SMU, you got
Penn State, Oregon, You've got Iowa State, Arizona State. So
let's take a look at this. Which of these conference
championship games is going to have the most impact on
(01:53:45):
the College football playoff Let's start with Clemson and SMU.
That might be the most confusing. Clemson's a three lost team,
and a couple of weeks ago, it was thought that
the winner of this game, SMU's you know, heads into
the game Saturday eleven and one. I believe they're two
and a half point favorite over over Clemson. So match
(01:54:07):
up a strength versus strength. Clemson's got a very good
rushing attack, the best in the ACC. SMU's got the
top rushing defense. This is gonna be a good game.
It'll be it'll be an outstanding game. A couple of
weeks ago, you thought maybe the loser of this game
would be safely in the playoff bracket. But if Clemson loses,
that's her fourth loss. The committee is not going to
(01:54:27):
consider a four loss Clemson team. You can bank on
that that broaches the possibility of a three loss SEC
team getting one of the final that large bids. We've
already talked about Alabama. I think you know where we're
going with that. Now, that's the thing. What if SMU loses,
might they find their way in? But you can thank
Miami after they blewed against Syracuse last Saturday. That gave
(01:54:50):
Clemson the back door open. They got their game in Charlotte.
So there you have it. But Clemson's gonna have to win.
They can't. They can't lose and find their way in.
So it appears, you know, if the favorite SMU cold
servant wins this game, they'll be in. They'll be the
acc entrant. Now you've got the Big twelve championship game
Arizona State and Iowa State. This is much simpler. This
(01:55:12):
game will likely determine the seed check that this okay,
This game will likely determine that one of these teams
will be in the playoff and the other will be
going home. But the likelihood is whoever wins this game
will be the twelfth seed in the bracket no matter
what happens, irrespective of the rest of the tournament games
or the rest of the championship games played on Saturday. Okay, Now,
(01:55:35):
the scenarios where the Big Twelve champion can reach as
high as the four seed or a first round by
but I don't think that could happen now because I
think I think, I really think that based on what
I think I've seen in a twelve and one. Boise
State team's going to lock down on that number four seed,
all right, And I don't think you'll see a Big
(01:55:56):
twelve team on seat you know, the sec of the
Big ten. And you get the point. Okay, Iowa State wins,
they're in the twelfth seat. Arizona State wins, They're in
the twelfth seat. Now, this is a fascinating game because
Arizona State's playing with house money.
Speaker 3 (01:56:11):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:56:12):
They were picked to finish last in the Big twelve
preseason media poll. Imagine that one went away, one went
away from a chance to win a national championship. And
this is just craziness. It's good craziness, right Arizona State.
I believe they've ripped off five wins in a row
(01:56:32):
to get to this championship appearance. And Iowa State lost
two games in November and they're still alive to be
a part of this. So look, this is another interesting matchup.
The Cyclones defense has been tremendous all season. They only
allowed nineteen points a game. They got a great passing defense,
but Arizona State's passing attack is not great. Here's the kicker.
(01:56:54):
Arizona State can really run the ball. I think they're
going to dominate the line of scrimmage in this game.
I would not be surprised throne at Arizona State wins.
Texas Georgia. All right, this is the playoff hopes of
the SEC Championship. Both teams are getting in. One team
will get a buy one team will have to play.
Georgia will also do one or two things. Either the
Dogs drop out of the field, which I do not
(01:57:15):
think they will do. Okay, they would go against the
committee's long standing policy of rewarding conference championship game appearances.
You can't really penalize Georgia for being in the conference
championship game, right A bubble team like Bama or South
Carolina could be left out. But this is a Texas
revenge game that would solidify the Longhorns in their position
(01:57:36):
in the top four. But if Texas loses a second game,
to Georgia. Okay, that could earn the Crimson tie another bid.
But Texas is in. Okay, they're both in. It's just
a matter of who gets the bid. Check that does
a matter of who gets to buy and who has
to play Week one. Finally, the Big Ten Championship game
Oregon twelve to zero Penn State. The winner likely clinches
(01:57:56):
the number one seed in the entire bracket. The loser might.
We still host the first round matchup game though, however,
that's not entirely interchangeable. If Oregon loses, I think the
Ducks could fall as far as number five. A Penn
State loss, they could fall the number eight anyway you
slice it. Both teams are assured a playoff field spots.
There's no scenario where anyone misses out with a loss.
(01:58:17):
But I gotta tell you, Buckeye is losing to Michigan
week fourteen. One Big Ten team could be knocked out
of the field. We have to see what happens. So
we'll be watching Saturday, and I'll be back on these
airwaves Saturday night, eleven PM with plenty more hijinks on
the Bernie Frattle Show. We'll be covering it all in
the meantime, keep it locked up next to fellas, Fox
(01:58:38):
Sports Radio,
