in quite a long time. And while there will be
some football, oh my goodness. And so we're gonna have
to get into that because from as you well know,
it doesn't matter where you went today.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Did you go to the grocery store, did you go
to a youth.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Sporting event where the referees and the parents in between,
during timeouts, during halftime, everybody wants to talk about Luca
the Lakers. So let's get into it. We're broadcasting a
lot of tyreck dot com studios. Tyreck dot com will

Laker fan, E from salon Mary.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Mary. Come on.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
My gosh, if there's Mary, I do not I do
not want this man. Silence.
Speaker 5 (01:10):
Well, the first apologized Mary on the ones and twos.
Sometimes you know she just I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
No no no no, no, hold on, hold.
Speaker 6 (01:20):
On, hold on.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
I sit in the same spot and look and you
were up. You were up. What happened was that the
program had happened and turn you on.
Speaker 5 (01:31):
Whenever you hear someone say what had happened was then
you know his bull It wasn't.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
I wasn't trying to be.
Speaker 6 (01:41):
Your kids ever.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
Come on me like, hey man, what okay? See what
happened was? Actually no, your beef is not with me,
Your beef is with Sam. Sam was in here before.
I don't Sam, don't do my show. You do my show.
That's all I he turned it on. That wasn't me anyway?
Speaker 7 (01:57):
Happy, Yeah, she was married, very quite contrary.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
But it is all over now, and you know what
I want to know? I literally want to go slow
motion through.
Speaker 5 (02:07):
Let's get we got plenty of time. We have nothing
else to talk about.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Where were you? How did you find out all right?
And how did you react?
Speaker 5 (02:17):
So I'm sitting at home on the couch, I am
watching I'm gonna tell you exactly what I was watching.
I was finishing up a new show on Hulu called Paradise. Right,
first three episodes are out. It's really good show. I
recommend you watch it. Paradise Paradise, It's really good. Sterling
(02:38):
Brown is in it. It's it's really good, really good show,
well done. I'm sitting there, my phone chimes and I
look down and I'm like, wait a second.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
Wait.
Speaker 5 (02:55):
And so the one thing you have to understand about
social media is yes, there are a lot of prank
sports and so like, uh you know, like they it's
they look like they're real.
Speaker 4 (03:12):
But there are a lot of prank sites.
Speaker 5 (03:15):
And so I have a group text with what nine
of my closest friends I grew up with and and
so on and so forth. We call ourselves the Shoe
Group because we're all sneaker heads.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
Uh. And so it was the breaking news.
Speaker 5 (03:34):
Lebron uh luka, doncis traded for Anthony Davis. And I
was like, man, whatever, And so I'm looking and I'm like,
oh wait, wait, wait wait, that's ESPN.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
Hold on.
Speaker 5 (03:45):
So then I click on the link. It takes me
right to x and it is ESPN. And I'm looking.
I'm searching the comments to see haha, I got your food.
And as it was, as I was doing my own research,
my wife was in the room. Uh uh and she
opened the door and she just looked into my face
(04:05):
and said, oh my god. And and and we were
like oh snap, and then I'm gonna and this is
I'm gonna be as open as honest as I can be.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
I didn't know how I felt.
Speaker 5 (04:25):
I was like, I was like, I was like, oh
my god, we got wait huh right, I wasnpack.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
I was like, oh oh yeah, or.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Right.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
So I had a lot of that.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Yep.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
My ten year old was with his friends at the
Into It Arena at the high school games, right all
the top highs had the classic there at all the
top high school teams uh in in the area. And
so he had come home shortly after that and he
(05:05):
was sprinting up the driveway screaming, we got loga, we
got loga, we got loga. And I'm looking at it
and I'm like, calm down, calm down. He was like,
that's good, right, that's good. And I was like, well,
let's talk about it. Let's go in here and talk
about it. And so we sat on the couch and
we unpacked what that meant and what it looked like
(05:26):
and and this is okay. So that's that's how I
got introduced to it. What about you?
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Okay, So I'm glad that you involved your kids, because
I'll I'll involve mine because like lazy Saturday night. I
had already gone out to dinner, like we're just we're home,
Like I don't even what time was it.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
I gotta think it was like.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
What after nine?
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Like what kind of a Banana's news dump is this?
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Like I don't like what's at nine something on a Saturday.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
So I'm chilling. I'm chilling with the kids.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
The feet are up on the couch and I think
my ten year old and I were like just.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Playing games or something.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
We're just chilling, and all of a sudden, from downstairs
to get a voice from my eighteen year old here, like.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Dad, he's like it traded Luca to the Lakers. And
I was like, shut up. I'm like, I don't know
what game you're playing.
Speaker 6 (06:31):
It out He's like.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
No, no, Dad, that for real.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
And he did that three times, and all three times
I'm like, I'm tired, man, I don't want.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
To play whatever game you're playing.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
I don't know what fish hook you're trying to put
in my mouth, but I'm out. So whatever, dude, sure fine,
Luca is a Laker. Good for you on with your night.
And then he kind of gave me the like all right, dude.
Like he's like, it's everywhere, dad, but okay, see you later.
(07:08):
And so I'm like, uh, let me, let me go
on my phone out, let me just let me just
take a look. And then and then you know exactly
what happened, the same thing that happened with all of us,
especially in this day and age of access and technology
and whatever. Like you, you just dive into the rabbit hole,
(07:30):
my phone starts going crazy. It's work people, it's friends,
you know it. Like I mean, everybody is is immediately
just going crazy with all of those sort of staircase
things that you just mentioned. Because I know everybody has
said this is the most surprising blockbuster deal in the
(07:56):
history of the NBA, and I won't disagree.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
But what I also am really interested in.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Tonight, I feel like this is maybe the most layered
deal in the history of the NBA, which is there
are so many spider legs on this, There are so
many things to figure out from why did Dallas sour
on Luca.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
Why did they not get more? What does this mean
for Lebron, What.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Does it do to the two teams immediately? What does
it do to the two teams down the road? And
then what really gets fun over the next one hundred
hours of our lives?
Speaker 2 (08:40):
The hell did this just do to the NBA trade deadline?
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Because if you do that, if that's your appetizer, I
got to imagine a lot of other teams are going
to be encouraged to be more aggressive than they originally
were going to be. So I have all of that,
those questions on my mind, and we're tweeting and reading
and reading and tweeting and texting and just and you,
(09:08):
your name popped up. You gave me the hey, whoa
look out?
Speaker 2 (09:13):
What's happening?
Speaker 3 (09:14):
All of that? So it was kind of fun. But
the dust still hasn't settled yet.
Speaker 5 (09:19):
Man, No, it's it's exciting. In terms of the question
most Laker fans had on their their minds was what
are we going to do after the Lebron James era?
(09:42):
Mm hmmm, Like that was because that era is coming
to a close? Sure, uh, no, matter what, it's coming
to a close.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
And so.
Speaker 5 (09:54):
You know, being so you know steeped in history and
dynamic players, like if you come to the Staples and
are crypto, you can barely walk on the sidewalk in
front of the arena because of the greatness that has
been immortalized in statues.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
Just as what it is.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
That's what it is.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
And so there's an expectation when you come here as
a fan to be able to see that caliber of player.
And so Lebron came and joined and it's been five years,
we have a championship. So what's next? How do we
(10:39):
get the next one? Is it going to be with
Lebron when he goes? Is it the era of ad?
This is not your father's Lakers or your grandfather's Lakers.
Are my early Lakers in terms of it goes through
a big man, right, Mike and Kareem will shack some
(11:04):
new dan Ahe is ad that guy. He don't want
he doesn't want to play center. He wants you want
somebody else to be down there banging in the paint.
And as good as he is offensively and defensively one
of the top defensive bigs and offensive bigs in all
of the league period, is that the answer to the
(11:26):
next era? Now, obviously not, we know what the answer is.
It's the Luka Doncic era, which he is twenty five
years old. Since he's been in the league, he's been
all NBA he was second in MVP voting last year,
third the year before. He's now a Laker, So I
(11:50):
would presume that'll be for the next ten years, you
would think. So that is the answer to that question
that we've had since Lebron turned thirty eight, what's next? Well,
we know what's next now. The question I have it's
(12:10):
what's now exactly?
Speaker 3 (12:13):
Actually, I mean the fact, like again, so many questions.
But what I want to dive into next is that
conversation you had with your son.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
Because you were immediately.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
As you processed it, at least a little bit hesitant
in terms of how good or great, or good or
bad or somewhere in between. This is both for the
Lakers now and into the future. There are questions, So
I would love to hear what it is you were
thinking there and thinking in this moment. We'll get to
all of that coming up next. It's one of the
(12:49):
biggest tree shaking trades of all time. Ephraim's a big
Laker fan, where big NBA heads. We're going to be
all over this all night. We will get you ready
for next week's Super Bowl as well. On our first
Sunday without football since August and so here we are.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
With me from Salam. I'm Mark Willard, and this is
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to
listen live.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
Okay, theseinthetirereck dot com studios. With me from Salam, I'm
Mark Willard. Speaking of the NBA, got a hell of
a game going on right now between the Celtics and
the Cities.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
No one cares good.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
What trade have they made in the last twenty four
How yeah, I turned it on. It's the same players.
I'm like, Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
I already knew that.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Well, they were down by almost thirty and now they're
up by one in the fourth quarter or three minutes
to go. Hell of a comeback. Sixers playing a lot
better of late. Steve Desager will have that info coming
up in less than ten minutes, and so we'll keep
an eye on that. But yeah, man, rocking and rolling
on this trade that just shook everybody last night, and
(14:19):
every piece of it and all of the different angles.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
So hit me man.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
You're a big Laker fan, and after thinking about it,
for an hour or two or whatever.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
You were like, I'm not sure, So what is it
that you're thinking?
Speaker 5 (14:37):
Okay, so now ahead, and this may be crazy to
some people. Come on, this may be crazy. So I
start thinking, Okay, Luca Lebron, what does that look like?
Speaker 4 (14:56):
Now?
Speaker 5 (14:56):
I knew that we needed two things this trade that line.
We needed a point guard, a real point guard. It's
not at uh Reeves, as good as he is at
you know, handling the ball and all that, that's just
not what he does.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
So we needed a true point guard. And then we
needed another big.
Speaker 5 (15:16):
Someone to take the load off Anthony Davis and let him,
you know, play what he feels is.
Speaker 4 (15:22):
This natural position.
Speaker 5 (15:23):
That's what I coming into the trade deadline talks. That's
what I thought. Are you know, knew that the Lakers
needed in order to not only continue to play. You
gotta remember they're four four or five in the in
the West right now. We're not talking about a team
(15:45):
that is fighting for a play in spot or you know,
trying to get that just not just to hear me,
hear me, let me hear just hear me out. I
got you don't give me that golden state. We try
to get the ten.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
They're eight and two in the last ten. Yeah, I'm
hearing you.
Speaker 5 (16:10):
Okay, So I'm thinking, Okay, I like Finny Smith. I
love what he's bringing Vanderbilt, coming back from two years
of injury. His energy and defense is palpable. He's the
only one on the court that will consistently go for
rebounds even if he's not under the basket, like he'll
(16:33):
come from the three point line to get a rebound.
I love that that energy isn't we don't see that
anywhere anymore in the NBA. So I'm like, Okay, we
have some things. I know we need another big in
a point guard. But if we just get another big,
I think that gives us the size they compete with,
you know, the Calves if we make it that far.
(16:54):
But with the Nuggets and Minnesota, that's my thing. So
the trade happens, and I'm like, well, we got the
point guard. And so I'm thinking, and I'm like, ooh,
I understand the play. This is something that is going
(17:17):
to benefit the Lakers in the long run. So I
started asking my question is this year? Is this a
viable year to compete as we currently sit or stand?
Speaker 4 (17:30):
No?
Speaker 5 (17:31):
But what could change? That what valuable piece do we
have right.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
Now, let's let's talk about it. Yeah, go ahead, that.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
Can garner the level of talent.
Speaker 5 (17:52):
That we in value that we can change that into
a now instead of a later now and later essentially,
and that piece is Lebron James.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Lebron James, right.
Speaker 4 (18:05):
And so.
Speaker 5 (18:08):
If Lebron James is traded now, it would have to
be it will be probably be Lebron and Bronni and
you know they got to go together.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
Whatever that is, right, which is it is what it is.
Speaker 5 (18:23):
But he has a no trade clause and he's probably
only going to go to one place, and that one
place is Golden State, and so he can play with
Draymond and so he can play with Steph. They've been
hitting about it for years the Olympics, you know that
(18:44):
in the end of the game, high screen and roll
with him and Steph. I mean, you can't guard that.
No one can guard that. There's nothing you can do.
And so if the Lakers, and they've shown they will
pull the trigger, right, they will pull the trigger obviously,
And so if they're really in this, we need to
(19:07):
rediscover who we are and make this look like we
are a real contender that would be on the table.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Okay, but so let's play with that for a second.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
We have to that's all, that's all we can do.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
No, I I right, But like you said that, what
the Lakers still need would obviously then need to be
received in exchange for Lebron James oh plus plus right,
But Lebron goes nowhere but Golden State. So how do
those assets return to the Lakers? Who are they? Who
(19:44):
are they with the Warriors? Obviously you could get a third,
fourth team.
Speaker 5 (19:47):
And well that's the magic of the NBA that a
lot of people don't understand. Even this mega trade was
a three team trade with Uta was right, So they're
ways for this to have happened. And you may say, well, well,
Golden State, you know, of course they would throw Wiggins in,
They would throw probably Kevon Looney in. Uh, but you
(20:10):
would need you right, right, but you would need another,
uh team you want you want back? No, I don't think, well,
I don't have a problem with Shooter, you said, No,
I don't have a problem.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
I don't like Shooter.
Speaker 5 (20:24):
Actually, the fact that he turned down eighty nine million dudes, crazy.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Crazy, But well, yeah, the Warriors kind of need him,
but they wouldn't if they got Lebron.
Speaker 4 (20:32):
Right, it would be a different situation.
Speaker 5 (20:34):
Right, So now you have those three players whatever the
third team that you would bring in.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
What that looks like?
Speaker 5 (20:41):
Of course, you know, I don't know if that that
twenty thirty is the twenty thirty one or twenty thirty
first round pick goals in that deal. I think the
value of Lebron is you know, I think you retain
that pick unless you're sending it to a third team
(21:02):
and they're sending some type of valuable asset to you.
But there is a whirl for this to happen, and
I'm curious to see. I almost think it will based
on Rob Polinka and him not letting anybody know that
they were going to do this.
Speaker 4 (21:20):
I mean, to me, that was gangster beyond and.
Speaker 3 (21:25):
So no, have you ever seen Stephen A. Smith or
Brian Windhorse. Have you ever seen him look like that?
Speaker 7 (21:31):
They're looking around doing the same thing You're whoa Like, No,
when you talk about it's like Godfather level gangster, right,
And when we talk about gangster on this show, it
could only mean one man, and that is Stephen the
don the saycre.
Speaker 8 (21:48):
There was the story that it was a month ago
that Rob Plink of the Lakers Gym first met and no,
it wasn't the players any involved requesting a trade. And
yet late last night about a complete shocker. I know
Kareem was once traded to the Lakers back in the
seventies and had already not only been Rookie of the
Year but MVP three times by that point.
Speaker 6 (22:10):
It didn't happen in the.
Speaker 8 (22:11):
Middle of the season for grant out loud, the Lakers
received Luka dantch Maxi, Kleeber, and Markith Morris. Mavericks received
Anthony Davis, Max Christi and a first rounder of the
Lakers in twenty twenty nine. I must say this again
out loud, the Lakers give up only one first round pick.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
Oh, we'll go get to that.
Speaker 8 (22:29):
It's only been a couple of years since that trade
with Minnesota and Utah that involved Rudy Gobert. Minnesota had
four first round picks that went to the Jazz in
that particular trade. Well, let's get to the Celtics at
Philadelphia game, which with thirty five seconds left now has
Boston in the lead at Philly one eighteen to one.
Speaker 6 (22:48):
Ten.
Speaker 8 (22:48):
Jason Tatum thirty five points eleven assists. Tyrese Maxi of
Philadelphia thirty four points, almost all of that in the
first three quarters. Believe it or not, Philly was ahead
late third quarter ninety to sixty four. They only have
about twenty points in the fifteen minutes since, and the
Celtics have passed them. The late game coming up in
(23:08):
a few minutes. Memphis at Milwaukee. John Morant to the
Grizzlies is out again with a sore shoulder. Cleveland's record
is forty and nine after ripping Dallas one forty four
to one oh one after the first quarter. The Cavs
led today fifty to nineteen. At Toronto Raptors over the
Clippers one fifteen, one oh eight. The Toronto Raptors have
(23:28):
won eight of their last ten, and they'll host New
York on Tuesday. Detroit over Chicago one twenty seven to
one nineteen. Nick Fucevich of the Bulls a triple double.
Zion Williamson of New Orleans after an illness, we'll return
to play on Monday. Or reminder, the NBA All Star
Game is on Sunday the sixteenth, so just a couple
weeks away. In San Francisco next Sunday, of course, the
(23:50):
Super Bowl. Keep in mind the NBA All Star Game
is now a fourteen mini tournament. Each team will have
eight players. In college basketball, it is halftime. I'm at
number sixteen Oregon. Nebraska leads the Ducks thirty four to
twenty eight. Earlier wins for number eighteen Illinois over Ohio
State a number nineteen Memphis, which edged Rice. In women's basketball,
(24:12):
Iowa upset number four USC seventy six sixty nine on
the day the Hawkeyes retired Caitlin Clark's number. Twenty two
NHL wins for Colorado and Buffalo currently in progress at Florida,
Panthers lead the Islanders five to three with seven minutes
to go. At the New York Rangers home team up
on Vegas three to two with about five minutes left
in the game. Rory McElroy won by two strokes at
(24:35):
Pebble Beach after a final round sixty six. Shane Lowry
finished second. The Raiders new offensive coordinator will reportedly be
Chip Kelly. The NFC won the Pro Bowl. Alabama's new
offensive coordinator due to be Ryan Grubb. He was OC
at Washington under Kaylan Devoor for a couple of years
and Faye nce it has passed away. A former commissioner
of Major League Baseball. He was eighty six years old.
(24:57):
He took over his commission September of nineteen eight nine
after the death of his friend Bart Jamadi, and the
very next month was the earthquake World Series in the
Bay Area.
Speaker 6 (25:07):
It was his.
Speaker 8 (25:08):
Ruling that we finished this World Series, even with a
week and a half delay Giants versus Age. The A's
did come to a conclusion. He wound up only three
years in that job, essentially being forced out by the owners,
and eventually Bud Sealing, an owner, became commissioner.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
Back to you, great stuff, Steve, And you know you
just mentioned the the Rudy Gobert exchange.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
Let's go back.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
I think, if I'm remembering correctly, this was somewhere in
the neighborhood of eight months ago. Eight months ago, the
Knicks acquired McHale Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets, and among
other players, received five first round draft picks for McHale Bridges.
(26:01):
Can someone answer that for me? Why just one pick
for Luka Doncish's twenty five years old? Why not more specially.
Speaker 4 (26:14):
Well, I could tell you why specially.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
I'd love to hear that answer, because, as you just said,
they also not just they traded Luca Doncis they did
it in the dark. Yeah, they were not in a
situation where a trade demand was public. They were not
in a situation. It's not Jimmy Butler for example. You
did not know that there was something going on, which means, okay.
Speaker 2 (26:38):
We got breaking news.
Speaker 4 (26:40):
I can tell you this.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
Let's hear it. Yes, please, Oh I love this.
Speaker 6 (26:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (26:47):
Chris Haynes reporting Schams as well. The Sacramento Kings are
trading dearon Fox to the San Antonio Spurs, a three
team deal. Zach Levine winds up in Sacramento along with
first round picks three.
Speaker 3 (27:02):
He said, yeah, okay, so details to come on this,
but here we go. And this is kind of what
I was saying earlier, like, if that's your initial act
is the most surprising trade of all time, you're gonna
get a bunch of other teams to really up their game.
Oh it's time, like we're we're not messing around, you're
(27:24):
not sending the Oh we got an expiring contract.
Speaker 2 (27:27):
Oh yeah, that's nice, Like it's time to make the
big move.
Speaker 3 (27:33):
So Zach Levine, who was rumored in a number of
different directions, ends up being in this deal. More details
still coming, but Levin to the Kings, Darren Fox to
the Spurs, which was his desired landing spot, and three.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
First round picks.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
So I go right back to my question, how the
hell did the MAVs not get more, especially because the
first round pick they got is still four years away.
Speaker 5 (28:02):
Yeah, I think when you're see, both of these are
all NBA talents. So when you're swapping that level of
talent and it's all based on your need, right, they
feel that Kyrie can run that show in Dallas. What
(28:22):
they do need is a big outside of someone who
can catch a lob right or catch a rebound off
to rim and dunk. They need a big who can
stretch the floor, who can be a defensive presence as
well as give you thirty a night, which AD can.
So now you have more ball control, more offensive flow
(28:44):
because Kyrie will get off the ball if he has
an AD with him. And I'm just look, I'm just speculating.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
Yeah, you're answering x'es and o's, and I feel you.
What I'm saying is this is a leverage situation.
Speaker 5 (28:56):
They didn't want to pay Luka doncis three hundred and
seventy five million dollars in a couple months.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
But because they're not happy, nobody needed to know that.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
Yeah, but how many you know what I mean, like
you could have The story is is that they only
called the lakers.
Speaker 5 (29:14):
They were You gotta remember, this has been brewing for
three months. Imagine the level of conversations behind closed doors
that have been happening with with both gms. Right, First
of all, it started out as a joke like would
you ever.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
Right, like you, why woult you call more teams.
Speaker 4 (29:33):
Because you didn't want you did?
Speaker 5 (29:35):
Because number one, you don't want this to get out
if you involved and you know this, Yeah you know this.
If you tell someone else, it's going to get out.
The only two people they knew and that and that
is a lesson for the world.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
Except for not a lesson if what you did ended
up being sell something for fifty cents.
Speaker 2 (30:01):
On the dollar. Even if I knew, even if the
world knew that.
Speaker 3 (30:05):
Luca was going to be traded, I would argue, somebody
out there is going to give you four first round picks.
Speaker 5 (30:12):
They didn't want somebody. They wanted AD And that's the difference. Wow,
you can say all of that you want if you
want something right, if you want the one thing. I
don't need that because I don't need right. I don't
want to go on a date with fifty other vims.
(30:36):
I just want this one girl. I'm gonna put my
attention there. When I met my wife, I was like,
this is the one and believe me. Hey man, I
was my six year in the league. I was young,
twenty seven years old, no kids, no responsibilities, it was options,
and I said I want her, and so I my
(30:57):
everything that I did from then on was to.
Speaker 4 (31:03):
Build a relationship with her.
Speaker 5 (31:05):
Now I can't do that if I'm still over here perusing.
Speaker 4 (31:10):
The owls, like hey, what about right?
Speaker 5 (31:12):
So, when you're hyper focused on something, and I think
that's why the story that has been going on for
three months now.
Speaker 4 (31:19):
They knew exactly.
Speaker 5 (31:20):
I'm sure somebody was like, what would you give a Seluca?
And it was like, well, I mean if you do that,
you know what would you want? Well we got to
have ad. Oh okay, oh that what else?
Speaker 3 (31:33):
But you're sitting here telling me what you said twenty
minutes ago about the Lakers viability for this year as
a title contender. Well, wouldn't Dallas ask themselves the same question,
Because if what you're telling me is that they have
so valued Anthony Davis, that means they so value this
year and Ephraim their twenty six and twenty.
Speaker 2 (31:55):
Four, I would argue, that's stupid.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
You could have got way more by literally grabbing a
bullhorn heading for the sphere.
Speaker 4 (32:05):
In Anthony Davis.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
But but who cares? You're not.
Speaker 5 (32:11):
But I said, look, we may say that, but may they.
I can almost promise you they don't see it that way.
And that's the difference. Conception is reality.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
Kyrie A d and Clay ain't winning nothing.
Speaker 5 (32:26):
He man, I'm not going to argue that. I'm not
gonna argue that, right.
Speaker 4 (32:31):
You can't.
Speaker 5 (32:32):
You can't make me explain how that'll work, because in
my opinion, it does it, So I don't.
Speaker 4 (32:38):
It doesn't matter to me. That's what they wanted, that's
what they.
Speaker 2 (32:41):
Got, I know.
Speaker 3 (32:41):
But I'm gonna walk out of here with the opinion
that the Dallas Mavericks screwed this up.
Speaker 5 (32:46):
And that is a okay as long as we didn't.
And that's what that's what that's all I'm worried about.
Speaker 2 (32:53):
And and that's what I want to go to next.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
Because the tweet that I sent out last night had
two pieces he from. One of them was I don't
understand why Dallas didn't get more and the second piece
was I don't know how the Lakers are going to
stop anyone from scoring.
Speaker 4 (33:06):
Ever, that's why it's not done. That's why I don't
think it's done.
Speaker 3 (33:10):
Okay, so let's discuss that coming upnext, Tireck dot com Studios.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
That's E from Salama, Mark Willard, Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (33:17):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports Radio

Speaker 3 (33:29):
Maybe the San Antonio Spurs are saying no, they are
like us because they got in on this action too.
If you're just joining us Tirereck dot Com Studios, Mark
Willardy from Salam.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
The second biggest domino has fallen.
Speaker 3 (33:44):
However, this one we saw coming the Sacramento Kings, and
we could take a couple minutes on them. They have
turned what was two years ago a really nice story
and an up and coming team into quite frankly, one
of the most confusing situations I have ever seen.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
But I shouldn't be confused because it's the Kings.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
So I should I should have known two years ago
you're going to find a way to muck this up,
and so here we are. Darren Fox is now a
member of the San Antonio Spurs. DeMar DeRozan is on
the Kings, but said publicly this week if de Aaron goes,
I don't think.
Speaker 2 (34:28):
I really want to be here anymore.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
Zach Levine, the most untradable contracted sports now resides there
and the.
Speaker 2 (34:39):
Chicago Bulls receive a first round pick.
Speaker 3 (34:45):
The Kings received the rest of the hall, which is
two more first round picks and three second round picks.
That's what the Spurs give up. This is all spread
out over the next six years. And Dearon Fox and
Victor Wemman teammates.
Speaker 5 (35:03):
Yeah, I understand what what San Antonio is trying to do.
And make no question, Dearon Fox is an all star.
He is unbelieve the problem with the San Antonio Spurs
is as long as you have the cheat code shooting
(35:29):
sixteen to three pointers, then you're not going to maximize
your potential and your ability, Because the bottom line is,
I've seen it myself. I've watched the game. I remember
the game he played against the Lakers. He was one
for eight to start the game. The one was in
(35:54):
the middle of the lane. The other seven were from
beyond the some as far out as thirty five feet.
So what happens when you have someone who no one
can guard anywhere on the court and they choose to
shoot as far away from the basket as possible. You
(36:20):
do two things. Number One, your percentage of making that
shot drops dramatically. Even if he shot thirty nine percent
from the three point line, he would shoot seventy nine
percent from the key. That's just what it is. There's
no one ever to be able to block his shot.
He could shoot almost eighty percent from inside the paint.
Speaker 4 (36:45):
The second thing.
Speaker 5 (36:45):
It does is it takes you and takes him away
from ability to rebound. If he's shooting the long three,
who's getting a rebound?
Speaker 2 (36:56):
Somebody else?
Speaker 5 (36:57):
And if your team is shooting the long three and
he's in the short corner waiting for a drive and
kick and you miss, who's getting the rebound not him?
Speaker 2 (37:08):
Right, So.
Speaker 5 (37:11):
Unless they fixed that, well, that's a real thing, Like
this is a real thing.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
I'm with you. I just he's twenty one years old.
Speaker 4 (37:23):
I get it. He's twenty one years old.
Speaker 5 (37:24):
So what you don't want to do is allow someone
that young to come in and just build bad habits.
And I'm not saying taking threes or bad habits, but
I'm saying taking threes are bad habits. If you have something,
what if Kareem I do at Jabbar instead of the
hook shot which he had, would shoot threes. Just explain
(37:46):
to me, well, how that would give you the advantage.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
I don't mind having it in your repertoire, but.
Speaker 4 (37:51):
You can have it.
Speaker 5 (37:53):
But when you come down and seven of your first
eight shots or threes, hey man, this.
Speaker 3 (37:59):
Guy would averaging five and a half three point attempts
per game last year as a rookie.
Speaker 2 (38:04):
This year it's over nine.
Speaker 4 (38:07):
That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 5 (38:08):
Yes, so you wonder why they're at the bottom of
where they are in the standings. That is a direct
reason why. That is a direct reason why, because they're
not efficient. He's not efficient.
Speaker 3 (38:24):
Well, they're there. Here's what I would say, on this day,
on this year. They are incredibly young, and they are
going to figure it out.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
I love this parent.
Speaker 4 (38:36):
I'maul is not young.
Speaker 5 (38:37):
No, so if Chris Paul hasn't been like, hey, man,
hey let's let's let's not do that.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah. But this isn't about this year
for the Spurs.
Speaker 4 (38:44):
No, no, no.
Speaker 5 (38:45):
But what I'm saying is, see, they're as an athlete,
and I'm speaking as an athlete. What happens is do
you ever wonder like, in a couple of years, you'd
be like, man.
Speaker 4 (38:55):
What happened? They had so much potential.
Speaker 5 (38:58):
What happens is when you build bad habits consistently over
a couple years, they become your norm.
Speaker 3 (39:06):
Sure I feel you. No, I'm not disagreeing with you.
I'm just saying I love their chances to figure it out.
I love what the Spurs did here.
Speaker 4 (39:18):
Oh great, great movie.
Speaker 3 (39:19):
But Fox, if I am scratching my head on Sunday,
February second, I am wondering, why have the Kings done
all of the things that they have done in the
last six months? And why did the Dallas Mavericks only
get one first round pick? Those are my two questions
I'm going to bed with tonight. E. That's that's what
I'm going to bed with tonight. But let's get to
(39:41):
that question, the Laker defense. What happens now that's coming
up on Fox Sports Radio. Well, we knew there was
a lot going on, and now there's even more. We're
broadcasting live from the tire rk dot com studios.
Speaker 2 (39:57):
Ti rak dot com will help you get.
Speaker 3 (39:59):
There, and I'm match action fast free shipping, free road
hazard protection at over ten thousand recommended installers, tyrack dot
com the way tire buying should be. Where will Jimmy
Butler play in two hours? I mean, we got Luca
last night, we got de Aaron Fox tonight.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
I don't know what do you think who's next? Give
me the name?
Speaker 5 (40:21):
It'll definitely well, I don't know that Jimmy thing is
is it's.
Speaker 2 (40:26):
A different that's a different animoid.
Speaker 4 (40:29):
Yeah, it's hard when you when you.
Speaker 5 (40:32):
The whole dischrontle thing and the price tag you got,
you gotta be And it's easy to say, well, when
they get here, they'll be.
Speaker 4 (40:40):
Happy, But then what if they're not.
Speaker 6 (40:43):
Right?
Speaker 4 (40:44):
Then what if they're not right right right, right right?
Speaker 5 (40:46):
And so he's already shown how he can you know,
sidetrack or blow up in an organization, like this is
not this is Jimmy's what fourteen thirteen, fourteen?
Speaker 2 (40:58):
Uh yeah something.
Speaker 4 (41:01):
Yeah, those situations at least it's.
Speaker 2 (41:04):
At least four. I can't even does that all of them.
Speaker 4 (41:08):
This is the playoffs Tea Wolves.
Speaker 5 (41:10):
He yeah, we don't have playoff Jimmy right, uh uh right.
Remember he got to the Bulls and he was was
at the Bulls and it was like, y'all suck. You
don't know how to work, you don't know how to practice. Yeah, right,
it's no.
Speaker 3 (41:24):
He's like, look if I if I were running an
NBA franchise, and I know, you're gonna get more desperate now.
Speaker 2 (41:35):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (41:35):
The Lakers got Luca, the Spurs got Darin. You know
it's gonna make you want to come to the party.
I I understand that, but I'd walk right up to
my GM and be like, you're gonna treat Jimmy Butler
just like a hot burner on the stove.
Speaker 2 (41:54):
That's a do not touch there. There. There is nothing
for you there.
Speaker 3 (42:02):
I get that, Like, I respect Jimmy's ability, his resume,
all of these things, but it's also funny to me
in a culture in the NBA and in all sports
for that matter, where we flip out if you haven't
won a ring, Like, look at all the people who've
gone to a super Bowl and not won and the
(42:24):
way we treat them, the Joe Burrow, the Jalen Hurts,
the brock Purty, and but Jimmy took a team to
the finals and we're like, oh, that's a playoff performer.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
Yes, yes, there's no.
Speaker 3 (42:43):
Ring, there's four broken locker rooms, and there's thirty five
years of age.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
So do not touch under any circumstances.
Speaker 5 (42:56):
Yeah, what you don't want to do is you don't
want to blow up your locker room.
Speaker 4 (43:00):
You don't want to blow up.
Speaker 5 (43:01):
Your team, and so you have to make sure you
use caution when you're handling dynamite man, Right, So yeah,
it's yeah, you know, shout out to Beyonce for winning
a Grammy for the Best Country Album.
Speaker 2 (43:21):
But I tell you what, that's that's a new day.
Speaker 4 (43:26):
People are there now?
Speaker 3 (43:28):
Yeah, same anyway, this ain't tix here. Uh, Darren Fox
is actually not singing that song. It's Texas, is indeed
(43:49):
exactly right. So but hit me with this man, Let's like,
let's let's go on an offshoot here. How the hell
and I know your first answer is going to be there,
not done. But the Lakers were already a poor defensive team.
Speaker 4 (44:03):
Yes, well they had gotten better. Let me just.
Speaker 3 (44:07):
Fair, they had Statistically they were bottom third of the
league in this moment, and they just got rid of
their absolute, unequivocal best defensive player.
Speaker 2 (44:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (44:17):
So whatever this move is that you are predicting comes next, boy,
it better be a freaking doozy. That better be a
doozy if you want the Lakers to actually be relevant
this year.
Speaker 5 (44:31):
Yeah, I think, And like I said, I stayed at
the top of the hour last hour. When you look
at the Lakers and the franchise, right, they've been middling
the last few years with either not making the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (44:55):
Are the play in now.
Speaker 5 (44:58):
Two years ago, they got all the way to the
Western Conference Finals, which was amazing, and they ran into
a bus saw, which is a Denver the Denver Nuggets,
who ended up winning the championship. Okay, they regressed the
next year, got beat in the first round of the playoffs,
ran up against that very same Denver Nuggets team. Their
star is getting older, both of them, and so they
(45:22):
decided that they needed they needed to pivot. They needed
to think long term and what that looked like as
a brand and a team, and this trade presented itself
(45:45):
in getting Luka Doncic an All NBA player, MVP caliber player.
I don't even know if he's in his prime yet,
his pre prime, because you usually hit your prime around
seven eight years.
Speaker 4 (46:02):
That's just what it is, right, right, sure, sure.
Speaker 5 (46:06):
Right, you've weathered the storm, you know what you need
to do to get better. All of these things it
usually happens around that time. Well, he's not even there
yet and they have him, so number one, they're to
be commended for doing something like this, Like this is
(46:26):
something that you know most wouldn't have the heart to do.
Now we can look back in five years and be like, man,
that was the greatest trade in the history of trades, right,
similar to when they traded for Kareem and what that
turned into. They traded for Kobe Bryant on Draft Day
and what that turned into. This has now that's all
(46:52):
speculatory because it hasn't happened yet.
Speaker 4 (46:54):
But this type of move that.
Speaker 5 (46:58):
Would normally be done by the late great Jerry West
is now being done by Rob Polinka, who's been criticized
and right he's heard the talks of Lebron as Lebron
is making the decisions this and that and that and
that and that, and I knew there was gonna be
pushedback when they wanted to trade, when Lebron and them
(47:21):
wanted Russell Westbrook and then they wanted him traded, and
Rob Polenka Jennie Buss said, hey, man, y'all wanted him.
Y'all figure it out. And it didn't happen. That next
year they end up, you know, end up going. And
so now we're the situation now where they have done
(47:43):
what they needed to do moving forward and all, I mean,
he's an MVP candidate.
Speaker 4 (47:49):
Period for sure. For sure, you don't get those in trade.
When does that happen?
Speaker 2 (47:55):
Well, no it doesn't, it doesn't, But why did it happen?
Speaker 5 (48:02):
Look, we can ask ourselves that a million no, no.
Speaker 2 (48:06):
Like it's a very relevant question.
Speaker 4 (48:08):
Like what was Dallas thinking, yes, we.
Speaker 3 (48:12):
Love, we love in sports to just write like New
York Jets, Sacramento Kings, Haha, stupid organization. I don't believe
that any organization is that dumb that there wasn't a
reason here, not saying.
Speaker 2 (48:31):
It was a good one. I don't know what it was.
Speaker 3 (48:34):
But if if you sat down and you talk to Miko,
general manager of the Dallas Mavericks, and you had no microphone,
he would tell you a reason like I wonder, if
you're having this much trouble with conditioning and defense when
(48:58):
you're twenty five, then how does it look when you're thirty,
Because that is, of course what they were about to
sign up for. It's what the Lakers may sign up for.
I mean, now there's no Supermax on the table, so
this may look more like a three year deal or
something like that. In the office. I don't know what
(49:18):
he's going to sign, but the Mavericks are staring down
the barrel of we're going to have you until you're thirty,
and thirty is only thirty.
Speaker 2 (49:26):
That's fine.
Speaker 3 (49:28):
But if you're on a rapid weight gain and you're
battling the organization over it, and you're missing games and
you won't play defense, and when the ball gets stripped,
you spend about a half hour talking to the ref
while the other team runs down the floor. Like all
the things that we've debated before about Luca. I mean,
(49:51):
I don't know is that what happened here? Did the
Dallas Mavericks just go.
Speaker 4 (49:57):
We don't want to deal with it.
Speaker 2 (49:58):
We're projecting that this is gonna go the other way, yeah,
and not the way you all think it's gonna go.
Speaker 5 (50:04):
Didn't Mark Cuban sell up a big portion of the team.
So I'm wondering if, if he's still in control like
he was, does this happen.
Speaker 2 (50:14):
I don't.
Speaker 4 (50:15):
I don't think so.
Speaker 5 (50:16):
Yeah, I doubt that's a guy that's the but the
honest too, I don't think this happens if Mark Cuban
has his hand on the But I don't think he
does this at all. And I think that's why it's
so shocking to all of us, because it's like, whoa,
you know, this is not the Mavericks. We're you know,
we're used to under Mark.
Speaker 3 (50:36):
Well, he joked before he sold that steak in the team.
He joked one time he was asked by a reporter
what what would be more likely, trade Luca or you
get divorced and and he said, well, you better call
a divorce lawyer, yeah, because that's like absolutely more likely
(51:02):
than me trading Luka Dancis.
Speaker 2 (51:04):
Now, maybe that was a line for the cameras, some
sort of a.
Speaker 4 (51:07):
Joke, but I don't just knowing Mark and in.
Speaker 2 (51:11):
The time, at the time it was made.
Speaker 5 (51:13):
Yeah, yeah, And so you know, look to your point,
they said, hey, if we sign up long term for this,
is it going to click in this twenty five year
old young man's head that No, you do actually have
to work out in the offseason, you do have to
eat right, you do have to take care, take care
of yourself because this is a war of attrition. Although
(51:34):
he did lead him to the NBA Finals last year,
he did, and so it's it's a situation where you know,
obviously there had been some discourse or some they weren't
on the same page. Obviously, you don't make this trade
if you're in love with your all pro star, future
(51:56):
Hall of Famer, you don't do it. If you do,
it's franchise suicide. So we may never know just what
their issues were, especially not anytime soon. You never let
that stuff come out if you're you know, planning on
(52:21):
trading someone. That's the problem with the Jimmy Butler thing.
The world can see just what's going on, and so
now it's like, well, do we want that, And it's like, no,
we don't, right, we don't know any issues that they've
(52:42):
had with Luca. We don't know anything going on in
the locker room with Luca and the MAVs, him and
Kyrie or whatever. The Dallas Mavericks. Mavericks really just hoot.
They hitched their trailer to Kyrie, who's still a heck
(53:03):
of a player. Yeah, well, you know, three years ago
it was like, you know, he was he was, you know,
in the same pocket.
Speaker 4 (53:13):
Jimmy Butler was sure.
Speaker 5 (53:16):
And so now they feel with a D that they
can get something accomplished. I like Max Christy. I love
his development and how well he's played. He just had
a phenomenal game yesterday in New York prior to this
trade being announced. Now he's on a plane looking for
(53:40):
an airbnb in Dallas.
Speaker 3 (53:44):
The Mavericks franchise went out there without Luca, without a D,
without Kyrie today out of Klay Thompson, who went one
for ten and I think they were down by thirty
something points at the end of one quarter. So yeah,
I don't know what kind of a gut punch this
is to all of them with that franchise. But let
(54:06):
me ask you this and don't answer yet. Coming up next,
I don't want to hear about the future today. There's
a basketball game tomorrow night. Are the Lakers better today
than they were yesterday? I'd love to hear you answer that.
It's coming up next on Fox Sports Radio. All right,
that's e from Salama, Mark Willard Live Tyreck dot Com Studios.
(54:30):
I mean, let's jump right to that question. Like today.
I know that the move was for the future, and
the Lakers got a star.
Speaker 2 (54:38):
And yeah, I get it.
Speaker 3 (54:41):
Man, for only one first round pick, I think I'd
have done the deal.
Speaker 4 (54:44):
How could you not?
Speaker 3 (54:45):
But today, today, twenty twenty five, better team, better team today.
Speaker 2 (54:51):
Than they were yesterday.
Speaker 4 (54:55):
Yeah, you know why?
Speaker 2 (54:57):
Why?
Speaker 5 (54:57):
And I'm going to answer the question just like you
asked it right Yesterday they played in New York, which
is I think number three in the East. Good team,
having a good year. They were on a five game
win streak, and the Lakers went into New York and won,
(55:18):
and Lebron had a phenomenal game, Austin Reeves had a
phenomenal game, and so on and so forth. Ad was
hurt and he has been hurt the last two and
a half games. So if you ask me today right now,
if the Lakers are better than they were yesterday in
the game they played in New York with Luka Doncic.
(55:42):
Now my entwer is unequivocally yes.
Speaker 3 (55:45):
He's hurt too. He's been hurt longer than ad So,
like I said, so really, if you want to answer
it that way, the only thing that's different is that
Max Christie's not on the team anymore.
Speaker 4 (55:55):
That's it.
Speaker 2 (55:56):
So they're worse.
Speaker 5 (55:58):
They're not worse because the potential of and he's coming back.
Speaker 2 (56:04):
You know they both are.
Speaker 3 (56:06):
Yeah, they're both coming back, right, I guess, I guess
my like, we do have to ask it this way
or answer it this way as well. Like we got
sidetracked a little bit on the defensive thing. And I
know you think another deal is coming.
Speaker 4 (56:22):
I can promise you it is, and I believe you, I.
Speaker 3 (56:25):
Really do, because it doesn't It doesn't really add up
in this moment.
Speaker 2 (56:29):
I think, in a vacuum.
Speaker 3 (56:31):
If you're talking about playoff basketball in twenty twenty five,
this roster, assuming health for all players, the ones who
left and the ones who are are now on the way,
this Laker roster that has a harder time winning a
playoff series than the one that just got broken up.
My opinion because I think defense gets more important as
(56:55):
you go.
Speaker 4 (56:56):
I agree, and.
Speaker 3 (56:57):
This is a like a stunningly pants around their ankles
defensive team. If you look at their roster right.
Speaker 4 (57:06):
Now, who the Lakers?
Speaker 2 (57:11):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (57:11):
Yeah, that's that that they are not equipped in this
current moment to play defense in the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (57:17):
In the NBA. No, And I don't think there are
a lot of teams that are.
Speaker 2 (57:21):
That's fair. That's fair.
Speaker 5 (57:23):
But I will tell you this and just go back
and look that that the introduction to the wing defenders
that we have been waiting on has has been invaluable.
(57:44):
Meaning now having Vanderbilt back and Finny Smith playing like
he was three and D guy knockdown wing defenders, they
have changed how the Lakers now defense. That's the thing
that I'm hopeful and excited about because now you can
(58:10):
literally guard the three point line, the rotations, and even
Max Christy was playing a phenomenal defense. So what I'm
telling you is Ad is an eraser. A D is
(58:30):
an eraser because he protected the paint. The thing that
gives me hope is no one even scores in the
paint anymore. That's true, even tries to do it, which
is infuriating.
Speaker 4 (58:49):
To me.
Speaker 3 (58:50):
I'm listening to you right now with on silent, this
Memphis Milwaukee game on on on the TV, and I
think it's been six minutes since somebody took the ball
inside the arc.
Speaker 2 (59:02):
And so nowal and.
Speaker 5 (59:05):
So now, given that and understanding that, you can say,
if they can guard the perimeter better, which they're doing
and their numbers show that, then are they a better
defensive team? And that's what's happening right now, it really
(59:28):
is now. I'm not I can't tell you that not
having a D doesn't matter. It does matter. He's an
All defensive player, an all you know, first team defensive
offensive player, a first team All both defense and offense,
(59:52):
in my opinion, should have been you know, Defensive Player
of the Year last year. So when you ask me that, no,
they've gotten a little worse when it comes to protecting
the paint. But what teams like to do offensively is
they make it easier for you to protect the paint.
(01:00:15):
Case in point, what I was talking about about Victor
winbin Yama, right, like, AD's not down there battling him
in blocking shots because he's shooting.
Speaker 4 (01:00:29):
Nine threes a game. So this notion of.
Speaker 5 (01:00:36):
Hey, defensively, they all have to pick it up wing defenders,
and that's what we've been seeing this last week or so.
Now that some guys are getting healthy and all of that,
that's the only thing that's bringing me a little bit
of excitement. Like, Okay, I see what you guys are
(01:00:59):
trying to do. So if they can keep that up
and keep that going, look, I think they'll be Okay.
Speaker 3 (01:01:06):
Yeah, Now, not having a d hurts and I'm not
I can't make any Well, it sounds like you think
you're not going to have Lebron either by Thursday.
Speaker 5 (01:01:16):
I don't think so that's crazy. So was this trade?
Speaker 3 (01:01:23):
Yeah, well, of course there's nothing nonelier than this. Now
we're almost expecting the un.
Speaker 4 (01:01:27):
Head and that's why I feel the way I feel.
Speaker 3 (01:01:30):
Yeah, yeah, listen, If Luca can be traded, Lebron can
be traded.
Speaker 2 (01:01:38):
For sure. I think we've arrived at.
Speaker 3 (01:01:42):
The point at least where there's only one human being
on Earth who can't be traded.
Speaker 4 (01:01:46):
Oh we know who that is.
Speaker 2 (01:01:49):
One person and that is Steve.
Speaker 4 (01:01:53):
No trade clause to say it, right.
Speaker 6 (01:01:56):
No, pretty much everybody can be traded.
Speaker 2 (01:01:58):
Okay, all right, never mind, by the way way.
Speaker 8 (01:02:00):
It is potentially three first rounders that the Kings will
wind up in this deal, but longtime NBA writer Mark
Stein Passes Along and others have pointed out that the
first rounder for this summer that is going along in
the trade is actually Charlotte's first rounder and its top
fourteen protected, and Charlotte stinks, so instead that'll become a
(01:02:23):
couple of second rounders over the next two years. But
we do have a three team trade. Two players to
the Spurs, including Deer and Fox, two players to the
Sacramento Kings, including Zach Lavine. Sacramento will get a first
rounder twenty twenty seven from the Spurs, a first rounder
twenty thirty one that had belonged to Minnesota. Three players
(01:02:45):
to the Chicago Bulls, Zach Collins, trade Jones, Kevin Herder,
and we had a comeback win for Boston tonight at
Philadelphia one eighteen one ten. The Celtics trailed by twenty six.
Late in the third quarter, it was ninety to sixty four,
and then Philadelphia scored only twenty points in the final
fifteen minutes of the game. Jason Tatum thirty five points,
(01:03:06):
eleven assists. Boston's record now thirty five and fifteen. Cleveland
is forty and nine after beating up Dallas one forty
four to one oh one. Klay Thompson and the MAVs
one of ten shooting from the floor. Kyrie Irving did
not play due to a sore shoulder. I scoured, did
not see the name Luka Donsich in the Dallas box square.
I don't know what's happened. Guys, didn't I play? Yeah,
(01:03:29):
he's been out since Christmas. Just invisible in this league.
He's never coming back. Detroit with a home win over
Chicago won twenty seven to one nineteen. Toronto with a
home win against the Clippers one fifteen, one oh eight,
and the late games in Milwaukee tied at fifty late
first half. It's Memphis at Milwaukee for the Grizzlies. Jah
Morant out again with a sore shoulder. San Antonio's Victor
(01:03:50):
woman Yama is questionable for Monday due to illness.
Speaker 6 (01:03:53):
He did not play on Saturday.
Speaker 8 (01:03:55):
Zion Williamson of New Orleans after an illness, will return
to play on Monday. Anthony Edwards and Minnesota questionable for
Monday due to illness. He missed Saturday's game, which was
a loss to the Wizards for crying out loud. It
ended Washington's sixteen game losing streak. Houston All Star center
alpa and Shengoon is questionable with the Bruce calf he's missed.
The last two games were a couple weeks away from
(01:04:16):
the NBA All Star Game in San Francisco on Sunday
the sixteenth. As for the late night college basketball a
minute ago, Nebraska still leads at number sixteen Oregon seventy
to sixty three. Looks like the Ducks are going to
fall to five and six. In Big Ten play, Number
eighteen Illinois over Ohio State in a comeback eighty seven
seventy nine, nineteenth rank Memphis held off Rice eighty six
(01:04:40):
eighty three. Attendance for hoops at Rice today two thousand
and two seventy eight. And in women's basketball, Iowa upset
number four USC seventy six sixty nine on the day
the Hawkeyes retired Caitlin Clark's number twenty two. This was
an se team that had won fifteen straight and yet
in the first quarter the women of Troy were.
Speaker 6 (01:05:00):
Down eighteen to one.
Speaker 8 (01:05:01):
What NHL wins for Dallas and the Rangers Rory McElroy
won by two strokes at Pebble Beach after a final
round sixty six. The Raiders new offensive coordinator will reportedly
be Chip Kelly, who was OC for Ohio State this
past season. As long as he cannot be a head
coach and just you know, coach football and not actually
meet or talk to anybody, I'm sure.
Speaker 6 (01:05:23):
He's cool with the gig.
Speaker 8 (01:05:24):
Yeah, what million dollars and I don't have to do
anything else.
Speaker 4 (01:05:28):
This isn't great.
Speaker 8 (01:05:29):
The NFC won the Pro Bowl. It was not actual football,
it was a flag football game. Nonetheless, they give out
an MVP Trophy. Congratulations Jared Goff. His team won the
flag football fifty six to fifty for those scoring at home.
The Eagles and the Chiefs each landed in New Orleans
for next Sunday Super Bowl, and Alabama has a new
offensive coordinator. It's due to be Ryan Grubb, who was
(01:05:51):
OC at the University of Washington under Kayland.
Speaker 6 (01:05:54):
War for two years.
Speaker 8 (01:05:55):
Grub had one whole year as the Seahawks OC.
Speaker 3 (01:05:58):
Back to you, Steve, we don't want to wear you out,
so an hour from now, instead of listing off all
of the stars who might not play in their next game.
I'm just going to request that you just list the
stars that are going to play.
Speaker 2 (01:06:13):
It'd be a lot quicker, a lot quicker.
Speaker 8 (01:06:16):
I'm I'm not sure we can even be certain on
that because immediately true, well we know.
Speaker 6 (01:06:21):
Lebron's get well, I mean we're yeah, there was there was.
Speaker 8 (01:06:25):
By the way, the sources article from ESPN today, Oh,
he's staying past the trade deadline. I know the trade
deadlines this week, but he's staying. He hees a Laker
for this year.
Speaker 2 (01:06:35):
That was there. If he wants to be, he is that.
Speaker 8 (01:06:40):
That's true, right, it's essentially his no trade wants to
even when Golden State asked Genie Bonscott asked, hold on,
let me depeak to his agent, were the right person exactly.
That's the one thing about this trade last night that
actually made me feel great. It's oh, wait a minute,
the Lakers have a he actually did something. This was
(01:07:02):
not Rich Paul pulling a trade for the Lakers. This
is I don't know, kind of old school.
Speaker 4 (01:07:07):
I enjoyed seeing it.
Speaker 3 (01:07:10):
Well, let me ask you this, and Steve awesome as always,
thank you very much, Like Ephraim and I knew that
like in today's day and age of social media. It's
like five minutes after the trade and we're already having
an argument over what is probably the most irrelevant part
(01:07:31):
of the thing, but it is relevant, which is did
Lebron know? And you saw within five minutes certain reporters
and there were multiple reporters who had the same quote,
which tells me that it's Rich Paul behind the quote
about well, Lebron is at dinner and he just found
(01:07:54):
out and he's processing this and more to come in
in the days ahead. And now there are reporters arguing
over whether or not Lebron forced a d out or
if he had no idea. What's your take because I've
been cruising around for a decade thinking Lebron knows everything.
Speaker 2 (01:08:14):
A month before that happened.
Speaker 4 (01:08:15):
Now, why would you know?
Speaker 5 (01:08:18):
You have to speak to certain you know, rumors and
stuff like that, and and that, why would Lebron be
forcing a d out?
Speaker 3 (01:08:27):
I have no idea exactly, but but you think he's
going to be in Golden State and and they're significantly
worse than the Lakers, So why would Lebron do that?
Speaker 5 (01:08:37):
I think Lebron wants to play with Steph. I think
Steph wants to play with Lebron at this point, is
Lebron chasing a trophy? Are is he happy with shattering
(01:08:58):
every single record obviously outside of championships? And is he
trying to finish up, have a good time, play with
his son, play with the people he wants to play with,
Like you have to start asking yourself that in you're
twenty two, like what is there? And look, you can say, well,
(01:09:23):
you know, he's still trying to chase the Jordan it
at this point, if he gets another championship, that means
he would have to get two more championships.
Speaker 4 (01:09:32):
Well, and then the argument.
Speaker 5 (01:09:33):
Becomes, well, it took you thirty years to get however
many you know to get six championships?
Speaker 3 (01:09:42):
So does it Like if what you're saying is about
to happen, then somebody's lying.
Speaker 2 (01:09:48):
And let me bring another character into the book.
Speaker 3 (01:09:52):
His name is Steph Curry and he is probably number
two in the NBA as far as power brokers right
now at this day and age, and Steph Curry has
handled things in a much much different way throughout the years,
but has been very very careful in recent weeks to
(01:10:12):
pass along a couple of things.
Speaker 2 (01:10:14):
First, and foremost y'all are not.
Speaker 3 (01:10:18):
If you think I am not still hell bent on
a fifth ring.
Speaker 2 (01:10:25):
Now.
Speaker 3 (01:10:25):
He has also said I care about this organization and
we're not going to explode the future and make bad
deals just on my behalf. And I would argue that
both of those contentions by Steph don't blend with what
you're saying right now about Lebron, which is let's have
(01:10:45):
fun and just cruise through the sunset together.
Speaker 5 (01:10:50):
It's also does Lebron think he could win a title
with Luca or with Steph?
Speaker 2 (01:10:59):
My answer is probably they know to both. I would
like right now, you know what I mean?
Speaker 3 (01:11:04):
Like here, one thing that's interesting about this whole week
from is this idea of like, let's just grab stars
and huck.
Speaker 2 (01:11:11):
Them together and the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:11:13):
The playoffs start in two months and the thunder are
like and the Celtics and the Calves. That's like continuity. Man, yeah, man,
you're not beating those teams. I don't care who you put. Yeah,
you're not gonna grab Luca or Lebron or de Aaron
Fox and just be like, Okay, we're here, dude.
Speaker 2 (01:11:32):
You'll get crushed. You're gonna get crushed. That's what I think.
Speaker 5 (01:11:38):
I'm I'm I understand, and I get exactly what you're
talking about. Right, It's not a plug and play, it's
not legos. Continuity takes time. They already don't practice in
the NBA. So this All Star break, if I'm coaching
(01:11:59):
one of these teams with these new pieces, I'm like, hey, look, man,
I know y'all want to go into the beach and
whatever you're going to do or be in the All
Star stuff. We got to get some working, right, you
got to sacrifice, you gotta get some working. We gotta
make this this thing go.
Speaker 3 (01:12:19):
I can't believe that zach Lavine is on the Kings
and we can't even like there's not there's not even
any room for it, right, zach Lavine is on the Kings,
Dearon Fox is on the Spurs. The Spurs pull the
deal off without having to touch their shiny rookie who
(01:12:43):
they picked forth overall in love. And yeah, Luca is
a Laker, and you think Lebron will be a warrior
within the next three.
Speaker 4 (01:12:53):
Days, it just might happen.
Speaker 5 (01:12:56):
And look, I could be completely wrong, yeah, and off
my rocker.
Speaker 3 (01:13:01):
But.
Speaker 4 (01:13:03):
Stranger things have happened.
Speaker 3 (01:13:07):
Obviously, I will say this coming up at the top
of the hour, I would love to spend a little
time on the super Bowl with you, so we can
do that coming up next, exactly exactly, It'll be a
smaller still, we will there be more social media action
(01:13:29):
next Sunday or last night, I don't know, but coming
up next, we continue to ask the questions and work
our way through the wreckage of stars changing teams within
the last twenty four hours, and I would love to
dig a little deeper on what do we really think
the MAVs think and does that worry you as a
(01:13:52):
Laker fan? So we'll get to all of that coming
up next Tyreck dot Com Studios with me from Salam,
Mark Willard, Fox Sports Radio, Tyreck dot Com Studios. Yes,
the super Bowl does exist. We'll we'll find our way
to it somehow. I do have something I want to
run by you about this matchup, so do that in
a bit, Mark Whitty from Salam if you're just joining us,
(01:14:16):
dearon Fox is a spur, Zach Lavine is a king,
Kevin Herder.
Speaker 2 (01:14:23):
Is a bull.
Speaker 3 (01:14:25):
There are other pieces and a bunch of draft picks
flying around in a multi team trade but Fox gets
his way. He's off to San Antonio, his preferred destination.
And obviously Luca is a Laker, Ad is a Maverick
and who knows what is coming up around the next
NBA turn? Is there anything in you? You ever go
(01:14:47):
to the to the store and there's like that smoking
deal like liquidation type prices, and you're like, this is.
Speaker 2 (01:15:04):
This is fantastic. Give give me eight of them.
Speaker 3 (01:15:09):
I want eight, And then right before you get to
the checkout stand, you're like, is there something wrong with these.
Speaker 2 (01:15:20):
That I don't know about?
Speaker 3 (01:15:24):
Tell me there isn't a tiny half of a percent
of you that's like.
Speaker 2 (01:15:33):
Wait a minute, wait a minute.
Speaker 3 (01:15:36):
You're gonna give me Luca at age twenty five, and
I only need to give you one first round pick
four years from now. What do you know Mavericks that
the rest of.
Speaker 2 (01:15:48):
Us don't know? See?
Speaker 5 (01:15:50):
And that's where I'm bumping up against this because this
didn't happen.
Speaker 4 (01:15:58):
This week, our last week.
Speaker 2 (01:16:00):
Correct.
Speaker 5 (01:16:02):
So that's like, that's like going to buy a new
car or trading in your car and getting another car
and they give you the car for three months. They
give you the car for three months, right right, And
(01:16:24):
in three months you decide, you know what, I like it,
I'm gonna keep it. That's what we're talking about here,
Like if they have been start if they started this
three months ago, all this stuff we're speculating and asking,
I can promise you it's been talked about in nausea
and so I don't know if it's one of those
(01:16:48):
Oh well, I didn't see the fine print down here,
you know, because they've secretly been discussing what this looks
like and why they're doing it for three months.
Speaker 2 (01:17:02):
Well, correct, So I don't think that anything. I'm not
saying the.
Speaker 3 (01:17:06):
Wolves getting pulled over the Lakers' eyes here by any stretch,
because the two general managers are very, very tight, like
there's a good working relationship there. But what I'm more
interested in what led the MAVs to this decision. Not
so much like we know something you don't, But the
(01:17:30):
Mavericks have been with this man for years.
Speaker 9 (01:17:33):
Yeah, and everybody is running analytics all the time, and
everybody has all the medicals and all the background and.
Speaker 2 (01:17:45):
The experience of working every day together.
Speaker 3 (01:17:52):
And at some point they sat down, they looked at
each other and.
Speaker 2 (01:17:55):
They're like, we don't want to sign up for anymore.
What is that? What led to that?
Speaker 4 (01:18:07):
I don't know. I guess we can speculate.
Speaker 5 (01:18:10):
But new ownership has a lot to do with new decisions,
and like we had mentioned earlier, we don't think Mark
Cuban does this at all, but new ownership comes in
(01:18:30):
case in point. I know it wasn't a player, but
it was a big move when the new owners came
in and bought Golden State and they decided to move
on from a coach that they won with fifty six
games that year.
Speaker 2 (01:18:50):
Yeah, they were ascending, y right.
Speaker 5 (01:18:54):
We finally got to see what Clay and Steph and
Draymond could be together, and that was because of Mark
Jackson and the new owners came in and said, hey,
we're gonna get the keys to somebody else, and everybody
was like, wait, what just happened?
Speaker 2 (01:19:10):
I feel you, But that's a coach, brother.
Speaker 4 (01:19:12):
I know.
Speaker 2 (01:19:13):
What I'm saying is players.
Speaker 5 (01:19:14):
Those type of decisions that we don't understand ownership. They
don't They're not held to the same shackles as the
old people.
Speaker 2 (01:19:25):
These players don't come along though. Man.
Speaker 3 (01:19:27):
I just all right, much more on that, plus the
super Bowl coming up next, all rocket and rolling into
the night here on Fox Sports Radio, broadcasting live from
the tire rack dot Com studios.
Speaker 2 (01:19:43):
Tyrack dot com. We'll help you get there an unmatted.
Speaker 3 (01:19:46):
Selection, fast free shipping, free ROADAZID protection in over ten
thousand recommended installers tire rack dot com. The way tire
buying should be Luca, the Laker ad is a mav d,
Aaron is a Zach is a king, and draft picks
are flying all over the place. And it's still the
(01:20:06):
weekend for crying out loud, so we got a long
way to go. The reports are that Lebron says he's
going to stay a Laker. We'll see, but back to
the NBA in a few minutes. I do want to
just make sure that we say one or two or
a few things about this Super Bowl matchup. Here's what
(01:20:27):
I want to get off my chest, and many many apologies.
Speaker 2 (01:20:30):
If you are a huge fan of one of these teams.
This matchup.
Speaker 3 (01:20:39):
Two very good teams, two very deserving teams. You don't
even need me to say that they were recently matched
up against one another already in this game.
Speaker 2 (01:20:49):
But this matchup is evil versus.
Speaker 3 (01:20:54):
Evil when it comes to how we play with content
on a screen the best content. Most movies that I
go to has good versus evil. That's how it works.
(01:21:14):
You don't really have the Joker go against the Joker
or the Penguin.
Speaker 2 (01:21:19):
You have to have Batman.
Speaker 3 (01:21:23):
And the problem with this matchup, as far as I
can tell, for most fans around the country, is that
this is evil versus evil and they're not actually evil.
But the Kansas City Chiefs are in the midst of
a dynasty and people love to root against that unless
it's your favorite team. And the Eagles are loud, boisterous
(01:21:48):
and have what I would refer to as the hardest
fan based to stomach in the game. I don't say
that because, like, because all fan bases are annoying when
they're winning, that's the deal.
Speaker 2 (01:22:07):
But there's just too.
Speaker 3 (01:22:08):
Much in Philadelphia where it appears to be a fan
base that is proud of how like dangerous they are
at a game.
Speaker 2 (01:22:22):
They're proud of how obnoxious they are.
Speaker 3 (01:22:25):
They're proud of how many people they can assault, how
many hats they can steal off of the people who
wore the wrong hat to the game, and they'll defend
this stuff. Oh, you don't want us to come to
you that don't wear that to the game. This is
like non acceptable normal human behavior. So people root against them.
(01:22:49):
It only makes them louder and stronger. From I don't
know what else to say. I want both teams to lose. Well,
that's not possible. So if you correct to pick one.
Speaker 4 (01:23:03):
Like had to.
Speaker 3 (01:23:07):
My lovely lady is in the money in my brother
in law's playoff NFL pool. I'm waiting to find out
who she is going to pick, and I will be
rooting for that team. But if I had to had
to had to pick, I guess I would root for
(01:23:27):
the Eagles because they don't really have any problem with
their players. Their coach is their coach. He's an eye roll.
And I'm increasingly not feeling any sort of fanship toward
(01:23:51):
Patrick Mahomes, which we can get to that in a second.
That's actually become a thing just this year. But I
love Andy Reid, I love Travis Kelcey. I have nothing
again against cameras on Taylor Swift. I'm not mad at
any of that. They're just good. They're very very good.
They win almost every time they play football. So yeah,
(01:24:13):
I guess the Eagles. But I literally offered, you know,
the people who I was gonna. We talked about doing
a Super Bowl party, and I'm like, all ten bar,
I don't. I don't really need to Seriously, I don't
need to watch this.
Speaker 2 (01:24:34):
I'm so I think I'm speaking for a lot of
people right now. I really do.
Speaker 5 (01:24:41):
You may be, but I think people have been galvanized
by Saquon Barkley and awesome and what he's meant to
this team and what he went through last year.
Speaker 4 (01:24:56):
And they watched New York pick wrong on.
Speaker 5 (01:25:03):
TV yep, and so the fact that he had several
moments during the year where he could have been selfish,
he chose to be team first. So that will galvanize you,
and that will that don't have you rooting for him,
(01:25:23):
whether you have a dog in the fight or not. Right,
you want to see him do well. And on the
flip side of that, you know some people seeing something
that has never been done in the NFL in terms
of a three peat is intriguing. We know Patrick Mahomes,
(01:25:45):
especially if he wins next Sunday, is on the precipice
of being the greatest quarterback to ever play, which would
mean he has four Super Bowls, three in a row
in six years, not even the great Tom Brady had
(01:26:06):
been able to do that as well, as there was
a decade drought between Super Bowls at some aspect in
that dynasty. And I just don't see that happening with
Patrick Mahomes. So can he get to seven? They win
(01:26:30):
next Sunday, then that answer to me is, of course
they can, And of course he can't.
Speaker 4 (01:26:37):
Sure they got the.
Speaker 5 (01:26:40):
Best coach, the best defensive coordinator. Not sure how much
much longer he's gonna be there, but he will be
there obviously next year. And Andy Reid is one of
the best coaches to ever coach, and so Patrick Mahomes
being one of the best quarterback are, if not the
(01:27:00):
best quarterback in terms of talent to ever play. I
don't see this train slowing down.
Speaker 4 (01:27:12):
And that is.
Speaker 5 (01:27:14):
An intriguing story. Now there is you know, fan fatigue.
Of course, there is no swagger to Patrick Mahomes. So
it's you know, it's hard.
Speaker 4 (01:27:28):
To root for swag less players.
Speaker 5 (01:27:34):
Well right, right, Russell Wilson didn't have any swagger, but
the legion of boom Did you get my point?
Speaker 2 (01:27:41):
I do right here?
Speaker 3 (01:27:44):
Like the Mahomes thing is, for me, it's almost going
backwards and I'll admit that this is unfair.
Speaker 2 (01:27:50):
It's not his fault. No that that it seems like they.
Speaker 3 (01:27:55):
Got all the calls this year, right, Like, that's not
that's not as fault. Although there is one piece that
does bug me. But he's not the only one who
does it. This whole slide right at the shins of
the defensive player, like that needs to start being penalized.
You and I have talked about this. He flopped out
of bounds more than once. I don't enjoy it. Here's
(01:28:18):
what bugs me. It's almost going back in time. Do
you remember a year and a half ago when the
Bills beat the Chiefs on a controversial call. It was
this the Kadarius Tony lining up off sides.
Speaker 2 (01:28:32):
Do you remember this play?
Speaker 3 (01:28:34):
Well, if you remember what happened after that game, the
two quarterbacks met at midfield. And I don't know how
often this happens because I didn't play in the NFL.
You did you tell me? I think even when you're frustrated,
and even when there was a call you think was
a bad one, when the game ends and you get
(01:28:56):
to midfield and you're up there with your counterpart, if
you're going to talk to them, and congratulate him.
Speaker 2 (01:29:05):
Then that's what you do.
Speaker 3 (01:29:06):
Maybe you ask how the kids are, maybe you just
who knows what that exchange is about. But if you
remember what Patrick did in that moment, was he looked
at Josh Allen, the winning quarterback, the man who's literally
not been able to get over the top of you
Patrick in his whole career, and he comes over with
(01:29:28):
sort of that aweshuck smile, and Patrick.
Speaker 2 (01:29:31):
Looks at him and goes, could you believe that?
Speaker 3 (01:29:34):
Crappy call? What a bunch of bs off sides? Can
you believe that? And then walked off. And I thought
to myself, Patrick, has anybody done that to.
Speaker 6 (01:29:49):
You this year?
Speaker 4 (01:29:51):
Right?
Speaker 3 (01:29:52):
Did Josh do that? Because Josh got a first down? Patrick?
He got a first down on that play. I don't
care what anybody wants to tell me. He was up
by a point in your territory in the fourth quarter
and he got it first down.
Speaker 2 (01:30:10):
Now, whatever Kakamamy rules and weird.
Speaker 3 (01:30:13):
Ways of spotting the ball and oh, we can't tell
for sh whatever you want to give me, give it
to me, but it's all a bunch of ball.
Speaker 2 (01:30:21):
And I don't know that he would have won the
game anyway.
Speaker 3 (01:30:25):
But you know that I could sit here for the
rest of our hour and lay out all the things
that went the Chiefs way this year. And I don't
think anybody ever went up to Patrick after the game
and said, could.
Speaker 2 (01:30:38):
You believe that crap that led to you beating me today?
Speaker 3 (01:30:43):
And I just I can't get it out of my head.
It feels very classless to me.
Speaker 5 (01:30:49):
You know what, That's a good point, and I can
see how that would definitely turn you off, right when
you expect everything and when you don't get it, you
have a tantrum.
Speaker 4 (01:31:03):
Yes, oh like my at ten and thirteen year old.
Speaker 5 (01:31:08):
Right, that's called parenting it and I get that, and yes,
it's annoying when my kids do it, and it's annoying
when grown people do it. And so yeah, I hear that,
I see that, and it's everything that goes with that.
I think people are really pulling for the one bright
(01:31:32):
spot that is in Philadelphia's locker room. Definitely not Nick Sirianni,
Definitely not book reading wide receivers. It's the one guy
(01:31:53):
who's constantly shown it's not about me, it's about we,
And that's Saquon Barkley. A lot of difference a day makes,
a year makes and my hat goes off to him.
Me personally, I would have went for the all time
(01:32:13):
rushing record because it's been forty years. He'll never be
in this position again, and people will be like, well,
how do you know that? Trust me, there is a
reason it's been around for forty years. It's tough to do,
(01:32:33):
even more so now than ever before because it's a
passing league. You gotta remember that happened when it wasn't
a passing league. Now it is a passing league. So
I'd love to see se Kwan be rewarded.
Speaker 4 (01:32:57):
For his.
Speaker 5 (01:33:01):
You know, his team first mentality, his selflessness and winning
the Super Bowl because to me, that's the only thing
then makes that Okay, yeah, not going for that record, No,
that's the only thing. He is.
Speaker 3 (01:33:22):
He's fantastic, man, He's fantastic, and he may have changed
the game and you and I.
Speaker 2 (01:33:27):
Talked him a lot about it this year, at least.
Speaker 3 (01:33:30):
Temporarily until the pendulum swings back the other way. But
this this thirty thirty five million dollar wide receiver thing,
and and and their best wide receiver reads books now
while sa Kuon Barkley wins games, Yeah, it might change
the way contracts are structured with skill position players in
(01:33:52):
the league.
Speaker 4 (01:33:54):
I hope, so yeah, I do, I hope.
Speaker 2 (01:33:57):
So all right, it's more still ahead.
Speaker 3 (01:34:02):
It's already been maybe the most fascinating trade deadline in
the history of the league, and I was sort of
prepared for it to not even start until like Tuesday.
But here we are, dearon Fox on the Move, Luca
on the Move, Ad on the Move, Zach Lavine on
the Move. We'll get back to all of that coming
up next with Ipram Salam Mark Willard, Fox Sports Radio. Okay,
(01:34:24):
y'all live in theety right dot Com studios with I
Fram Salam Mark Willard. Shortly after the show, podcast goes up.
If you missed any of the show, be sure to
check it out in podcast form, and all you have
to do is search Fox Sports Radio wherever you go
to get your podcasts.
Speaker 2 (01:34:38):
Be sure to follow, rate and review the pod.
Speaker 3 (01:34:40):
Again, It's as easy as searching Fox Sports Radio wherever
you get your podcasts. You'll see this show posted right
after we get off of the air. But not done yet.
I will say this, I wonder how this grabs you.
It's been twenty four hours of breathtaking moves in the NBA.
(01:35:02):
Two of them so far, Tiern Fox to the Spurs,
Zach Lavine goes to the Kings. Lots more players and picks,
but those are the principles. And then obviously the Luca
and Ad trade, and I think.
Speaker 2 (01:35:15):
That we could debate the merits of the long term.
Speaker 3 (01:35:19):
I think obviously the MAVs acquired a star too, but
it feels to me like the Lakers and the Spurs
did the most interesting things for.
Speaker 2 (01:35:29):
The long term.
Speaker 3 (01:35:30):
But as much as we're all just trying to catch
our breath here, Ephraim, I really don't think the race
for this year's trophy changed a damn bit.
Speaker 4 (01:35:40):
Who's in that race.
Speaker 3 (01:35:43):
The Oklahoma City Thunder are in that race, The Calves
are in that race, The Boston Celtics are certainly in
that race. The Denver Nuggets are in that race. And
then if I wanted to like push this thing a
little further to like, you know, the teams that I
(01:36:03):
guess you could think of as sleepers, from the Knicks
to the Bucks because of their their pedigree. I feel
like it's too early for the Rockets, but maybe they're
this year's Washington Commanders. Yeah, that's kind of how I like.
(01:36:25):
That's how I feel. And as far as the Laker thing,
they've got the star power, but I'm I think you're
with me, like in this moment, they're still not constructed
in the way that they need to be constructed. And
I've had a lot of Laker fans reach out in
the last twenty four hours and say, oh, there's another
move coming, and maybe there is, but maybe there isn't.
Speaker 5 (01:36:47):
Yeah, we can revisit this conversation with the Lakers on
Thursday afternoon.
Speaker 4 (01:36:54):
Eastern.
Speaker 3 (01:36:55):
You know who they play that night that night, Golden State,
the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors have be in your
building Thursday night. Which uniform will Lebron wear?
Speaker 4 (01:37:10):
That'd be interesting.
Speaker 3 (01:37:11):
Yeah, So but no, that's that's kind of how I
see it. That's I don't I don't think any of
these deals suddenly vaulted anybody closer to those teams at
the top.
Speaker 5 (01:37:24):
But what I would I will say that these deals
are doing for the the NBA is it It's making
it relevant. It's making it relevant. Right now, people are
a little put off by the NBA in terms of
(01:37:44):
the style of play, in terms of the All Star format.
Speaker 4 (01:37:48):
What's going on there? Viewership is down?
Speaker 5 (01:37:52):
So if anything else what's happened, is this type of movement,
in this caliber of talent on the move peaks interest.
Now people want to see what that new team is
gonna look like. What is a lakerlu a Laker Luca
(01:38:13):
team gonna look like?
Speaker 4 (01:38:14):
If Lebron is still there? What is like all of that?
Speaker 5 (01:38:19):
I know Adam Silver is like, whoof Okay, we got
a little heat, we got little buzz and ifl about
to be over in a week, right, can they capture
the viewers after this all start thinking, my bob'm they're
doing in two weeks?
Speaker 2 (01:38:36):
I don't even know what it is yet? Right? Can they?
Speaker 4 (01:38:41):
Can you garner eyeballs.
Speaker 5 (01:38:47):
You know to the new look teams that will you know,
be around next in what four days? Five days? So
I think it's good for the league. I think it's
good for fans to see this level of movement. It's interesting.
(01:39:08):
I do want to see what the ad Kyrie Cavs
look like. I want to see what the Lebron Luca
Lakers look like. Are the Louca whoever are the step
and Lebron?
Speaker 2 (01:39:20):
Like?
Speaker 4 (01:39:20):
You would watch that? Correct?
Speaker 2 (01:39:22):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (01:39:22):
For sure, yes, no, I like by no stretch, am
I suggesting that this is in any way bad for
the league.
Speaker 2 (01:39:30):
Except from this standpoint, I think the league.
Speaker 3 (01:39:33):
Over the last five years or so, maybe even more
five to ten years, it leans too hard into the
things that happen off of the court. I know a
lot of NBA fans who are more interested in July
than June. Yeah, so that soap opera is.
Speaker 2 (01:39:57):
There's a little law of diminishing returns there. You're right.
Free agency is great.
Speaker 3 (01:40:03):
Massive trades are gonna get all kinds of buzz going,
and it will bring eyeballs to the party for a moment.
But if you keep shooting sixty three's a game, they're
gonna leave again.
Speaker 5 (01:40:18):
Yeah, but I think the dynamics of these stars changing
teams right now, you get dearon Fox out of the
Sacramento black.
Speaker 4 (01:40:28):
Hole, and you team them with what could be, you know,
one of.
Speaker 5 (01:40:34):
The the unguardable forces eventually in the league. With win Binyama,
you get Luca and the Purple and Goal. Right, you
pair one of the biggest stars with one of the
biggest stars and one of the biggest brands. I think
(01:40:59):
that's exciting, and I think it'll have staying power for
this year, right, like the upstart Rockets and the dominant Cavaliers. Yeah,
that's not that you don't want to build. That's not
just not going to help. That's not going to work, right,
(01:41:20):
That's like if we do it, we did our show
without the must hear voice of Steve the segre It
just it's not going to translate.
Speaker 2 (01:41:29):
That's not going to happen.
Speaker 8 (01:41:30):
Hello once again, gentlemen, and we are a week away
from the super Bowl on Fox TV.
Speaker 6 (01:41:35):
What it will be in New Orleans.
Speaker 8 (01:41:37):
And by the way, Philadelphia's last game played outside of
Philadelphia was before Christmas. It was a game at Washington
that the Eagles lost. Since then it was five straight
Sundays at home. They arrived in New Orleans today, as
did the Chiefs, looking forward to the game. As for
future Super Bowl sites, the forty nine Ers Stadium will
be hosting in one year Super Bowl sixty in Santa Clara, California,
(01:42:01):
place that has hosted the Super Bowl once prior. In
two years, the Rams Stadium will be hosting February of
twenty twenty seven in Inglewood, California. That place has hosted
one Super Bowl and in three years. The Atlanta Falcon
Stadium Mercedes Benz will be hosting in February of twenty
twenty eight. That stadium has hosted one super Bowl. The
city of New Orleans has hosted now eleven Super Bowls,
(01:42:25):
including the coming week. Superdome will be the site next Sunday.
The most recent super Bowl there just over a decade ago.
Let's just say we hope the lights are on for
four quarters and we'll leave it at that. On Fox
TV tonight, Chase Elliot one NASCAR's Clash, the annual exhibition opener.
Ryan Blaney was second in North Carolina. The Daytona five
hundred is in a couple weeks on Fox TV. Yes,
(01:42:48):
we've got the NBA All Star Game in two weeks
in San Francisco. It is now a fourteen mini tournament.
But we've got the trade deadline coming up this week
and as you mentioned, Sacramento tonight trading dearon f to
the Spurs. Zach Levine winds up with the Kings along
with potentially three first rounders. Chicago gets three players in
the three team deal. The late games at Milwaukee, with
(01:43:10):
about ten minutes to go, the Grizzlies have taken the
lead on the Bucks one oh five to one to
oh three, and John Moranda the grizz out again with
a sore shoulder. Boston was down twenty six late third
quarter and still won at Philadelphia this evening, one eighteen
to one ten. Cleveland's record is forty and nine after
whipping Dallas one forty four to one oh one. Home
(01:43:30):
wins for Detroit and Toronto upset. In men's college hoops,
Nebraska won at number sixteen Oregon seventy seven seventy one,
and in women's basketball, Iowa upset number four USC seventy
six sixty nine. On the day the Hawkeyes retired Caitlin
Clark's number twenty two. Sc started two of twenty two
shooting from the floor. The women of Troy had won
(01:43:52):
fifteen straight games NHL wins for the Rangers and Dallas.
The raiders new offensive coordinator reported will be Chip Kelly,
who was OC for Ohio State this past season. Pitcher
Jack Flaherty is signing with the Detroit Tigers. Former MLB
commissioner Fay Vincent passed away he was eighty six, and
Rory McElroy won by two strokes at Pebble Beach after
(01:44:14):
a final round sixty six. Yes, we do have some
payouts to pass along. Scotty Scheffler, i will say, did
finish in the top ten, tied for ninth after closing
with a sixty seven. He is the world's number one
rank golfer. His season was delayed by minor hand surgery
because of puncturing glass while making ravioli. But Scotty Scheffler
(01:44:36):
is back on the course and this was one of
those signature events, so huge payouts on the PGA Tour,
even though it's not a major. The winner McElroy gets
three point six million dollars, the runner up Shane Lowry
over two point one million. Everybody in the top ten
today gets at least a half million, and everybody that
(01:44:56):
finished in the top thirty five gets six figures for
the week weekend for their play at Pebble Beach. By
the way, the live golf schedule starts next weekend, they'll
have a three day event. All the live golf tournaments
are three days in Saudi Arabia on Thursday, Friday Saturday.
For live golf, every tournament has a total purse of
(01:45:17):
twenty five million dollars.
Speaker 2 (01:45:20):
Back to you.
Speaker 3 (01:45:22):
I don't know what's more breathtaking that or the fact
that you just announced a baseball signing that didn't end
with the word Dodgers.
Speaker 6 (01:45:30):
No, actually leaving the Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (01:45:32):
Yeah, that's like, that's why.
Speaker 3 (01:45:34):
I don't know if you've heard me laughing, gasp, but
you're like, check Flaherty signs with and I'm like, I
know how this sentence ends. And then you said one
of those other words, you said Tigers or something crazy
like that.
Speaker 8 (01:45:45):
That's correct, he's back to Detroit where he very recently was.
Already some you mentioned all the Dodger signings, and that's
what they lacked last year was pitching. So they've just
kind of overdone it in this offseason. You know, they
had a lefty closer and a righty closer, and then
now they added another lefty closer and another righty closer,
so they have four closers to mix and match as
(01:46:06):
they wish. But as far as starting pitchers, already, some
have said, you know, I don't know if there's room
for Clayton Kershaw at this point, but everybody does expect him.
Speaker 6 (01:46:14):
To re sign.
Speaker 2 (01:46:16):
Why not? Yeah, why not?
Speaker 8 (01:46:18):
As he put it, I didn't go through this reheab
for nothing, right.
Speaker 3 (01:46:22):
And he'll probably love the idea of pitching like, I
don't know, once every three weeks or something.
Speaker 8 (01:46:27):
Yeah, it's already going to be a six man rotation
of course, because hey, yeah it can be working Otani
back into it. Sasaki from Japan. That's a once a
week rotation they usually have over there.
Speaker 2 (01:46:38):
Gosh, yeah, that should be interesting.
Speaker 3 (01:46:41):
All right, Steve as always, thank you, thank you for
the great stuff tonight, and we look forward to to
next week already ty rock dot Com Studios from salam
Mark Willard. Hey, can we play a quick game of
do you believe Lebron?
Speaker 2 (01:47:01):
The game here?
Speaker 3 (01:47:03):
Yeah, let's do it, all right, Okay, They like, they
say he had no idea this was coming.
Speaker 2 (01:47:08):
Do you believe Lebron?
Speaker 10 (01:47:12):
Do I believe Lebron's They said he had no idea,
he was totally caught off guard by this trade.
Speaker 2 (01:47:22):
Do you believe Lebron? You do?
Speaker 4 (01:47:24):
I do believe it?
Speaker 2 (01:47:25):
Okay? All right. They say that Lebron says he not
going anywhere. Do you believe Lebron? You don't? Okay?
Speaker 3 (01:47:42):
They say that wherever Lebron does end up, it's not
necessarily tied to Bronny. Do you believe Lebron? No, okay,
you don't. That's two strikes. Watch out. The Willard family
is over there and they're to steal. Yeah, believe me.
(01:48:03):
Not the first time we've been booed. Okay, now I
gotta come up with a different question. Oh, Lebron says no,
he did not sour on Anthony Davis. Do you believe Lebron?
Speaker 4 (01:48:24):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (01:48:25):
You do?
Speaker 3 (01:48:25):
Okay, boy, I'd love to come up with a good
question to break the tie here.
Speaker 2 (01:48:35):
Lebron says he still wants to win. Do you believe Lebron?
Speaker 4 (01:48:40):
I do?
Speaker 3 (01:48:41):
Okay, all right, there it is. You're a champion, You've won.
You got three dings and only two buzzers.
Speaker 4 (01:48:49):
I think.
Speaker 5 (01:48:52):
I think in order for this trade to go like
it went, I don't think he could have had this
in from you know why, because he he.
Speaker 4 (01:49:04):
Would have been distracted. And did you watch him play?
And yeah, he was.
Speaker 2 (01:49:10):
He was unbelievable. He was unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (01:49:12):
He was playing like a kid.
Speaker 2 (01:49:16):
Again, is it just because he's forty?
Speaker 3 (01:49:20):
He's forty, and so now the Lakers and again this
is let's go with the idea that Lebron didn't know,
and for the first time, I would argue, probably in
the last twenty years.
Speaker 2 (01:49:34):
A team has made a big move without talking to him.
Speaker 3 (01:49:38):
I don't know if that happened, but that's what we're
supposed to believe.
Speaker 2 (01:49:41):
And if that's true, is it just because he turned forty?
Speaker 3 (01:49:44):
Are the Lakers now finally empowered to be like, look,
we've got to we've got to put our own pants
on and go back to actually running the team again
because you're forty.
Speaker 4 (01:50:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:50:00):
I think it's a situation where we drafted your son
lifelong dream. We gave you the extension, but we know
there's an end to this chapter. And what we're not
gonna do is get caught like we got caught at
(01:50:21):
the end of Kobe's chapter. We are going to address
this and also give you an opportunity if you choose
to play with one of the greatest young talents in
the league. What more could they do for him? What
(01:50:46):
more can they do for him?
Speaker 2 (01:50:49):
Hmm?
Speaker 3 (01:50:50):
Yeah, I mean, I don't know if they could do
more for him, but I bet I bet he doesn't agree.
I guess what they could have done is ask no,
find out what he thinks.
Speaker 4 (01:51:09):
No, because that would.
Speaker 5 (01:51:12):
That would give you the notion that it mattered what
we thought.
Speaker 3 (01:51:17):
Okay, but here here's here's I think the real, real question,
which we can answer coming up next. Like the Lakers
had won eight of ten. The Lakers, you said earlier,
like they have moved into a spot where this is
a true their top five team, and then they broke
(01:51:38):
it up.
Speaker 4 (01:51:40):
I don't know if they broke it up.
Speaker 2 (01:51:42):
They broke it up.
Speaker 4 (01:51:43):
Break it up, Like.
Speaker 3 (01:51:46):
Removing one of the top two players on a team
is breaking your.
Speaker 5 (01:51:50):
Stride, But what if you replace it with the top
five player in the league?
Speaker 2 (01:51:55):
Right?
Speaker 3 (01:51:56):
But what you and I did this when Kyrie joined
Luca and everybody told me they're never gonna not score
on another possession for the rest of their lives, and
I went, you don't snap your fingers in the NBA,
put two pieces together and have it be amazing right away.
Speaker 2 (01:52:12):
And they went to the finals in their second year.
Speaker 3 (01:52:15):
But in their first half year together they went into
the trash camp. Yeah, so like, let's get into that.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on that coming up next,
and that's where we'll go on Fox Sports Radio. All right, man,
I knew it was gonna be fun to be in
here with you tonight, and it did not disappoint. Live
(01:52:40):
inthetiereck dot Com Studios with e from salam Mark Willard.
I still say this though, Like I get it. I
think that the Lakers always love it when they can
find their star, and when that star has a bunch
a bunch of years left in his career.
Speaker 2 (01:52:59):
That's a no brain or you do that.
Speaker 3 (01:53:02):
But this idea that the Lakers just swapped one star
for another so the way they've been playing will just
stay status quo and they're still a factor in the
Western Conference this year, I don't buy. I don't buy.
I absolutely think they got worse for this season the Lakers.
Speaker 2 (01:53:24):
Absolutely No, I'm not going.
Speaker 4 (01:53:30):
To agree with that.
Speaker 3 (01:53:31):
Yeah, and I get it, but to me, everybody's going
to need time to gel. You're doing that with one
forty year old star and another who is currently hurt,
hasn't played since Christmas and isn't coming back immediately either.
Neither of them play defense anymore, one of them never did,
(01:53:52):
and so you.
Speaker 4 (01:53:54):
Got some valid points there.
Speaker 3 (01:53:55):
Yeah, Like, I don't know, man, Like if I'm Nikoli Jo,
I am laughing my ass off at this idea like,
what are you going to do about me in the playoffs?
Speaker 4 (01:54:12):
Well, we'll see after Thursday.
Speaker 2 (01:54:14):
You know.
Speaker 3 (01:54:15):
Yeah, yeah, and so obviously we reserve full judgment until then.
Speaker 2 (01:54:19):
But yeah, that's how I feel right now.
Speaker 5 (01:54:24):
I just want to just let the the air out
of my sales at the end of it.
Speaker 2 (01:54:30):
I mean, you got lucaf It's not like you're going anywhere.
Speaker 5 (01:54:33):
You got lucaf one guy. And I remember, oh, he's.
Speaker 2 (01:54:40):
A Warrior, a Warrior fan, a Warrior fan. Can I
share something worse?
Speaker 4 (01:54:46):
I know who didn't I know who didn't get better
this week.
Speaker 2 (01:54:52):
Any or any day over the last year and a half.
This one's funny though.
Speaker 3 (01:54:58):
The only thing that's hitting on Twitter tonight about the Warriors.
Brian Windhorse wrote, Jimmy Butler has expressed to the Warriors
that he will not sign an extension there and so
that means that trade talks, at least for now, have
been called off. And I don't know about y'all, but
the first thought that went through my hot mind is
(01:55:20):
thank goodness, oh God's name, wanted to sign and do
an extension. You're thirty five years old, You're scheduled to
make fifty two next year. You've missed a plane flight,
walked out of a practice just in the last two weeks.
Speaker 2 (01:55:38):
Extension, No thanks, that one was that's man.
Speaker 5 (01:55:48):
No, I mean sometimes people can mess up their money.
He goes ahead of a thing.
Speaker 3 (01:55:54):
Man, where do you think Jimmy ends up? Because the
whole Phoenix thing, I guess. I guess depends on the
price somebody will bite. Yeah, but somebody's whatever that bite
is going to cost, you know, almost fifty million dollars,
(01:56:15):
you have to match it somehow, So somebody's significance got
to go out.
Speaker 4 (01:56:21):
Yeah. I don't know, man, I don't know. I'm sorry,
you know.
Speaker 2 (01:56:32):
And Bradley Beal's got a no trade clause.
Speaker 5 (01:56:35):
Yeah, because he could just be like nah, but how
would you want to go to Miami?
Speaker 2 (01:56:40):
Well, I don't think. I don't think Miami wants Beal.
Speaker 3 (01:56:43):
I think they're trying to the word was that they're
trying to do something with three.
Speaker 2 (01:56:47):
Teams, three or four teams.
Speaker 3 (01:56:49):
Because Miami exactly, And Beal's like, uh no, try again.
I think Beal would go to Miami and a heartbeat,
I don't think my me wants him.
Speaker 4 (01:57:03):
M M.
Speaker 5 (01:57:04):
Well, I can tell you what one thing I know
for sure things about to get real spicy this week.
Speaker 4 (01:57:09):
Oh they already are and I can't and I'm here
for it.
Speaker 2 (01:57:12):
Yeah, absolutely absolutely.
Speaker 3 (01:57:15):
Hey, before before we get out of here, who do
you think is going to win the Super Bowl?
Speaker 4 (01:57:22):
The what.
Speaker 2 (01:57:27):
You know? The super Bowl?
Speaker 4 (01:57:30):
Keep trying to tell you, man, when man, all everything else.
Speaker 3 (01:57:42):
You're so funny, man, you're the only You're the only
former NFL player is like, man, bleep the NFL.
Speaker 5 (01:57:49):
Let basketball man, Yes, I do.
Speaker 2 (01:57:56):
Oh that's funny. Now, who do you think is gonna win?
Speaker 5 (01:58:00):
I'll tell you this. I think Kansas City's gonna win.
Oh crap, And I'll tell you why. Better coach, better quarterback,
better defensive coordinator, more experience. It's hard to beat that.
(01:58:22):
Sakwan would have to beat all of those, and that's
hard to do.
Speaker 2 (01:58:27):
Yeah, I got a really good defense.
Speaker 5 (01:58:29):
Right, They one of the top five defenses in the
league this year. So it's just not gonna be handing
the ball off to him and he gonna rush for
two Now, if Sakuon can rush for two hundred and
fifty yards, they win the game. That means that means
Patrick Mahomes over there watching. But if it comes down
to it within the possession in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 4 (01:58:52):
Who do you trust more?
Speaker 2 (01:58:54):
Yeah? Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:58:56):
You either got to blow him out or you will lose.
That is it.
Speaker 3 (01:59:00):
Hey, are you rocking with me on the late after
super Bowl party at eight o'clock next week?
Speaker 2 (01:59:06):
No? Are you rocking with me? No? No, okay, I'll
talk
Speaker 3 (01:59:10):
To you in two weeks then, all right, keep a
lock right here.
