Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is straight fire with Jason McIntyre.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up, trick Fire? It's me Jason MacIntyre, Straight fire.
Or Tuesday, March the fourth, it's franchise tag deadline day
in the NFL. Oh boy, some excitement is coming. We
got some news on Monday that T Higgins will be
staying with the Bungles second year franchise tag. I don't
(00:34):
think he's happy, that's my guess. We'll dive into that. Obviously,
Sam Donald and the Vikings it doesn't appear that they
will be tagging him, which would surprise nobody. And then,
of course, in the NBA, some kind of crappy news
with the Kyrie Irving injury last night. Not great at all.
Duke continues to smother and I mean obliterate folks. They
(00:54):
are the easiest bet in college basketball right now. Just
throw them in a parlay at Locke City. But we
gotta start in the NFL. Obviously, this T Higgins news
is significant. Pick a big chess piece off the board.
I thought Higgins was maybe the top three agent. I
would sooner take him over any of the quarterbacks, assuming
you already have a quarterback. I know defensive players matter,
(01:14):
pass rush offensive line. But T Higgins is I think
he's him. Love what I see from that guy carried
me to a fantasy football championship this year. Ha ha.
But like the Chargers are in desperate need of a
number one. Okay, Maconkie's nice, Quentin Johnson's solid, but they
need a big body receiver like they had with a
(01:35):
Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. They just don't have that,
And so I thought the Chargers would definitely be in
play for T Higgins. I thought the New England Patriots
with all their cap room, would just be like backing
up the brinks, and the Bengals said, no, we're gonna
franchise tag him. He's gonna be ours. Now we know
historically this kind of thing does not end well. The
Washington with they might have been the Redskins, Commanders Team,
(01:57):
Washington Team, whatever they were. They tagged Kirk Cousins twice
in a row, butchered it and Kirk Cousins ended up leaving.
They got left high and drive for a couple of years.
Then they bounced back with James Daniels. T Higgins turns
twenty or just turned twenty six in January still in
his prime. Okay, they're gonna lose him after I just
I don't love the franchise tag. Why not sign him
(02:18):
to a deal now, I guess he hasn't really responded yet.
Maybe he'll chime in when it becomes official, and he's
holding out hope that that something else will emerge. But
you kind of feel bad for t Higgins. He's not
getting paid. Jamar Chase is gonna get paid. Burrow got paid.
And I don't know if this is a playoff team
in the AFC. I don't like. What if Rob G's
(02:39):
Raiders go out and get Kirk Cousins or Aaron Rodgers
and he cooks and the Raiders are a threat. The
Broncos appear like they're on the uptick. The Steelers probably
dip a little bit. I think Miami's gonna be in
the mixed. Still, Jets, we know are are garbage because
they're my team. Of course, That's why I think the
Jags probably bounce back with a healthy Trevor Lawrence. It's
(03:03):
not a lock Bengals to go to the playoffs. They
were one of my Super Bowl picks at the beginning
of last season. I thought they would be very good,
and they just have no defense. They've given up forty
points seemingly every game and they're keeping their offense together.
So Higgins not an option for anyone. I do wonder, Rob,
you're a Devontae Adams guy. Dating back to his Raiders' days,
(03:24):
Devanta Adams was with Aaron Rodgers on the Packers, then
he was at the Raiders, then he got shipped to
the Jets. Now reports are the Jets are desperately trying
to trade him. Nobody wants to pay him thirty five
MILI a year for the next two years, which is
kind of an insane number. That being said, with Higgins
no longer available, if you have cap space, don't you
(03:44):
want to go out and get Devanta Adams? Like, if
you're the Patriots, I think you got it at least
be like, dude, we got Drake May, we might take
Travis Hunter for we need you now. I don't know
if the Chargers can afford him, but I feel like
the Chargers are. I mean, nobody went into this past season,
well I'm sorry, let me amend that not many went
(04:04):
into this past season thinking the Eagles were close to
a Super Bowl. Remember, they cratered at the end of
last season, So like, why couldn't the Chargers, with one, two,
maybe a third move all of a sudden be like, oh,
We've got DeVante Adams. We're gonna make a run. I
don't see why that is insane. The Commanders had their
quarterback on a rookie deal, just went and got Deebo
Samuel the other team that potentially potentially jumps out and
(04:31):
I don't know if they can because unless they were
able to trade Kirk Cousins somehow. But what about the
Atlanta Falcons, Michael Penix, Bjeon Robinson, Drake London. That's a
solid nucleus. They didn't even make the playoffs last year,
so they're gonna move off Cousins. They might have to
end up releasing him unless there's some sort of bidding
war for him. But I've got to figure there's got
(04:51):
to be a landing spot for DeVante Adams. I mean,
you know, do the Titans say, you know what, we're
taking Cam War, We're gonna get DeVante. We need to win.
I I don't know. I just maybe because it's the
Jets fan in me, but I like to think that
Devonte Adams will get traded as opposed to the Jets
having to cut him and swallowed the cap hit. But
I don't know, Rob G. Maybe I'm being too optimistic
(05:12):
about the Jets.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Head say you're being a little too optimistic about the Jets.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
I mean, considering my one year as a Jets fan
ended with perhaps the most disappointing season in an NFL
recent history.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Look, this whole situation with T.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
Higgins is and not just from a Raider fan, it's
disappointing because what makes the NBA so interesting year round
is the player movement. That you can have one guy
go to another team and he's a difference maker or
he's not. Even like big names go to different cities
all the time, and it's what keeps the NBA at
(05:48):
the front of your mind, probably even more so in
July and June and July than it does, you know,
January February. Like, that's just kind of the way it is.
And for my money, if you take out quarter of
the quarterback is a totally different conversation.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
Ye.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
T Higgins was the one guy I thought who legitimately
number one could be available and number two could be
a difference maker for at least half the teams in
the league, and the fact that Cincinnati went full on
Cincinnati ho us where they said we're not gonna sign
him because they could have done that. What two years
(06:24):
ago now, they still haven't given him the money. There
was a report actually that came out on early Monday morning,
Dan and Rusini said they made an offer to Jamar
Chase and they're far apart.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
It's like, how could you possibly be far apart.
Speaker 4 (06:37):
At this point with a guy like Jamar Chase when
you know the market is the market whatever Justin Jefferson got,
Give him a million and a half million dollars more,
get it done. They should not be complicated. Same thing
can be said about T Higgins. You know, he wants
to get paid like a number one. He's been productive
like a number one. Why are you not paying him
like a number one wide receiver? And the Cincinnati Bengals
(07:02):
are historically cheap franchise, so rather than invest in their team,
invest in one of their best players, Hew, invest in
your quarterback, who has said over and over and over
and over, I will do whatever it takes to ensure
that Jamar Chase and t Higgins are locked up long term.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
The three of us are gonna go together.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Yeah, and they can't get it done. So you take
such a big chess piece off the board for what
one more season, so that you can, you know, give
this fake idea that you're going for this year. Like
what Cincinnati is doing is kicking the can down the road,
but not in a good way. And if we learned
(07:44):
anything from the Dallas Cowboys last year, it behooves you
to get these deals done now because the price is
only gonna go up. Whatever you think you might be
able to sign see Higgins for this offseason. If if
you are acting that way, it's Cincinnati or any other team.
Let's say you don't get it done here in the
(08:05):
next month, whatever Chris Godwin signs for that's the new benchmark.
It's not gonna be like top jeff justin Jefferson money,
but that is gonna be the starting point for any
t Higgins contract, right.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Or wait do you hold on? Do you think that
coming off the injury, that he's gonna get thirty It depends.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
Would you be shocked if Tampa Bay said, hey, we
want to keep Baker, Godwin and Evans together because we're
not paying the running back position and we have a
new offensive coordinator in house. We want to have as
much synergy as possible because we think we can win
this division. The division is not very good. And when
we get into the postseason. Say what you want about
(08:47):
Baker Mayfield, and I've said a hell of a lot
about Baker Mayfield. He seems to be a gamer in
the postseason. So it might be making more sense to
them to overpay to keep Chris Godwin than to let
him go out elsewhere.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Interesting. I'm looking at the Bucks free agents. It's Levante
David who's thirty five. Probably move on from him. But
Chris Godwin far and away the biggest free agent. They've
probably got to keep him. He's a huge fan favorite.
I mean, Shaq Barrett getting long in the tooth, William Golst.
It like they don't have a lot of guys who
are free agents. If they're able to keep Godwin, they
(09:22):
might just go on and win the division.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
Right.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
I don't see why not absolutely going to be the Saints.
We would agree on that.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
No, it's not going to be the Saints.
Speaker 4 (09:30):
And to go back to an original point, the t
Higgins and how this might impact Dvante Adams. If you
go down the list of available wide receivers. The Godwin
injury is like tricky because I think if he were
Kno coming out the injury, he'd be easily number two.
You could make the case given his productivity number one
(09:50):
and number two. I'm assuming that price for DeVante Adams
has cratered after what happened last season, well, because much
was made about him coming off the receiver season on
Netflix I want the ball, I'm not getting the ball enough.
He's pounding on the sidelines, and that he did not
come off looking very good on that In that show,
(10:13):
he gets to New York, you think him and Rodgers
are gonna make sweet music again, and at times they did,
but for the most part it was very underwhelming. I
still think Devantae Adams is a great ride receiver, but
I don't think the price of what you would expect
a guy of his caliber to get somewhere in that
twenty five to thirty one million, somewhere in that range,
(10:36):
depending what the guarantee money is, I don't think that's
the price for him at all. And then you go
down the list, you got Steffan Dave's coming off in injury.
He's advanced age Keenan Allen's thirty three. DeAndre Hopkins look
kind of washing in Kansas City. Amari Cooper, I don't
think he's gonna change team. Think Bubble's gonna keep him.
And then he's like, oh, Darius Slayton, Hollywood Brown, like,
of course you're gonna take Devontae Adams so very quietly,
(10:58):
depending what te higgin.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
I think, you know, we'll see what that.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
Davante Adams and Cooper Cup, the two Wiley ovetts might
end up being the best bang for your book of
guys who could actually be gettable this offseason.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Yeah, the wide receiver market's interesting. I think it's a
little overvalued, you know, Like you look at the housing
market in this country, and housing is so overpriced between
rates and the run up, and I feel like wide receivers, Yeah,
I know the cap has gone up, but the price
you got to pay to keep these guys, and you
you lose a Tyreek Hill to an injury for a
couple of games like that cripples your offense, you know,
(11:34):
and then you've got wide receivers not getting the ball.
Unhappy coward, it speculated on air. I think it was
the last week he's like, I don't know I would
consider moving on from AJ Brown. I'm like, what now,
look at the Titans. They move on from AJ Brown,
and holy hell they've been they've been awful. But the
other big free agent name rob has to be Sam Darnold,
and the Vikings have been putting up this front like,
(11:55):
well we might tag him, we might keep him, he
was so good, and now they're not going to tag him.
And basically Sam Donald's gonna be in play. Everybody assumes
he's gonna get like some kind of Baker contract. I
suppose the teams in the mix would have to be Pittsburgh.
I think Indianapolis maybe gets some consideration. Obviously your Raiders,
(12:19):
maybe the Giants. Am I missing anyone? Like there's just
not a robust market for Donald and frankly, does it
make more sense to roll with a Gardner Minshew. I mean, hell,
the Colts almost got to the playoffs with him two
years ago. Joe Flacco got the Browns to the playoffs.
I mean he was like fourth string quarterback that year.
I don't know, what would you do Justin Fields at
(12:40):
twenty or Sam Donald at forty five? I don't know,
Like it's just not super attractive. And you know, Kirk
Cousins just stir lurking out there. Everybody's waiting for the
Falcons to cut him and they'll scoop him up on
the vet minimum like the Steelers got with Russell Wilson. Like,
I know, he didn't have a great season, and I
don't know he's got left in the tank. But I
would much rather take Kirk Cousin and as a vet
(13:02):
minimum after he's released, as opposed to forty five mil
for Sam Donald. And I like Sam Darnt like what
he did. But I think anybody watched football last year knows.
Oh that's that's the Kevin O'Connell thing.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
He's just really freaking good.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
I believe in Kevin O'Connell. That's why I'm bullish on
JJ McCarthy. I don't know, man, I just don't feel
optimistic for Donald, a former Jet who is a USC
guy as well.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
Yeah, it's really tricky because with Sam Donald, there was
a reason why it was such a shock that Baker
Mayfield with number one in that draft, because every body
worth their salt, GMS, scouts, coaches all said, if we're
going off with talent, then it's Sam Donald no questions asked.
The only guy who felt differently was John Dorsey and Cleveland.
(13:47):
So that's why it was like, oh my gosh, they're
really going to take Baker Mayfield over Santa because he's not.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
No ball is He's not a ball nowhere over there
in Cleveland? Like what's going on?
Speaker 4 (13:56):
And for a lot of different reasons, and things really
spiral out of control for Sam Donner early on, whether
it was with our Jets or with Carolina. Then he
goes to a situation in Minnesota where he has a
good coach number one and number two of something you
brought up that receiving corps was quietly one of the
top two or three in football between Jefferson Addison, you
(14:19):
bring in your factor in TJ. Hockinson and Aaron Jones
out of the backfield. How many teams can say they
have that kind of weaponry around them in the NFL?
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Very few.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
So you got to factor all of that in with
his next team. And depending on who you follow and
who you believe this kind of year. You know, we've
talked about this ad nauseum on this podcast. It is
lying season. Any information you get is because people want
it out there, like that's just kind.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
Of it is.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
Certain agents and certain executives have their guy or girl
they like to feed information too. But depending on who
you read, Matthew Stafford was the first domino to fall.
A lot of teams wanted Matthew Stafford so much so
that apparently the New York Giants that thought for a
month that they were getting Matthew Stafford.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
And when he.
Speaker 4 (15:03):
Decided to re sign in Los Angeles, that opens things
up where the Jets, the Giants, the Steelers, and the
Raiders are all going to be competing for the same
four guys that you mentioned, Donald Rogers, Cousins. And depending
how you feel, whoever leaves Pittsburgh Wilson er Fields, who's
(15:26):
going to be the one who gets a job done first.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
Would you want to go with the young upside of
Sam Darnold?
Speaker 4 (15:30):
Do you want to say the unknown because you've seen
flashes of talent. He's still only twenty six. You saw
that when he's protected and he has time, he can
sling it, you know, just as good as almost anybody
in football. Or do you go with the wiley veteran.
Do you go with the Kirk Cousins who looked semi
washed with that injury last season. Do you go with
Aaron Rodgers and all the circuits going along with him?
Speaker 2 (15:52):
I think probably go Cousins.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
Yeah. I think ultimately it's going to come down to
the New York teams.
Speaker 4 (15:58):
Because not only are they desperate for quarterback playing, it's
gotten to a point now where you're getting reports to
that both teams are trying to trade up to number one.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
Yeah, I don't Is that Tennessee trying to spark a
bidding one? I don't know. I don't know that I
believe that. I think it's Do you believe that you
think the Jets would really trade up to one for
cam Ward?
Speaker 5 (16:19):
No?
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Like I like cam Ward, but trading up for I
don't know it's gonna.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
What I think, though, is is my Raiders will end
up holding the bag. They're gonna end up with who's
ever's left over. I don't see them being aggressive to
get any of these guys.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
And Pete Carroll, who's like, what's seventy nine years old,
would just like he's as old as our president. I
think I think he's just gonna punt on quarterback this year. Oh,
we'll tackle that next year. Come on, dude, no way.
I think I would say Rogers or Cousins is the
move in Vegas, but a tough time seeing justin fields there.
We'll see what it shakes out here in the coming weeks.

Speaker 2 (17:07):
March is Crazy, March Madness, Free Agency. Obviously, NBA is
starting to wind out real quick, so we're working on
some college basketball guests for this week. I just pointing
out insane sat that I saw. So Duke smothered Wake
Forest last night. They have won their last four games
by at least thirty points, and each victory came against
(17:30):
a major college, a major conference opponent. They're not beating
the Sisters of the Poor and Direction of University. They're
killing people right now. And Rob, it's weird. I don't
find that the juice around Duke is the same as
it was with Zion Williamson when he was there. Where's
the hype machine for Cooper Flag? I don't see it.
(17:50):
Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough, but do you
see it? No, nothing compared to Zion. It's so weird
because Cooper Flag I think probably projects as a better
NBA players, more well rounded. Zion obviously more explosive, but
Duke did have coach k back then they had been rolling.
It's just weird. It's people are not that excited about
(18:11):
Duke this year. I'm not. I'm just not finding that.
Oh oh hey, Cooper Flag's on tonight. It was like
early in the season you watched Cooper Flag. Now they're
peaking crushing people, and people are like, oh yeah, Auburn
Alburn is really good. I get that, but its just
I find it odd. Do you I don't want to
make this a white black thing. Do you think it
was because Zion was I mean, Zion was a human
(18:32):
highlight roel, but well, Cooper Cup is not or Cooper Sorry,
Cooper Flag is not not.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
In the way Zion Williams.
Speaker 4 (18:37):
It was Zion Williamson, you'll recall, was famous before he
even got to college. Zion Williamson had, you know, for
those of you who dabble these kind of things, one
of the greatest mixtapes in prep history period like that,
even going back to I think is like middle school days.
Speaker 3 (18:55):
People knew Zion was.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
Doing he beating up on he was he was all
white guys.
Speaker 4 (19:00):
It's like three foot five white dudes, and he was
bashing all over them, you know, doing windmills in the
middle of a game.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
It's kind of like the whole arch Manning thing, Like, hey,
arch Manning was coming out of high school and was
playing at like a low level in New Orleans or whatever,
people like I don't know, and he didn't start for
two years. Zion's same deal, but he dominated it.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (19:20):
And then the thing about Zion was every night he played,
he was either going to do something or attempt to
do something that was gonna blow your mind. Like you
remember his show his shoe blowing up.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
You remember that North Carolina.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
I think you remember that block he had on the
three point attemp where he jumps from the other box
to block it with the outschurch arm, like on the
corner three.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
I feel like that was all peaks Zion.
Speaker 4 (19:46):
And my favorite one. I don't know if this was
in the tournament or late in the season. He goes
to jump and he has so much force that the
wood gives and you see a plank kind of come
loose and it causes him to lose his balance a
little bit and he gets hurt that way. I think,
And apparently people who cover basketball like much better than
(20:06):
I do, say that the court is made to kind
of give like that to allow the bounciness. But they've
never seen a give like that. That just shows how
much force he has. Like that's what you get from
Zion Williamson. Cooper Flag is great, he's a great NBA prospect,
but he's not doing that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
Yeah, that's fair, I will say. I like watching his game.
I think he's going to translate really well to the NBA.
I see Paolo Benkaro what he's doing, and then I'm like,
why can't Cooper Flag do that kind of I mean,
Cooper Flag's got a bag. He can hit threes, he
could take it to the rim, like he's a total package.
We haven't seen a lot, I'm loath to say, we
(20:41):
haven't seen a lot of white guys who can do that.
I mean Wagner obviously, the Wagner brothers. They're international, they
have all around gable. Cooper Flag is super skilled and
I keep butchering his name.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
So he's got some bounce to him.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
He's like a hybrid between Paolo as you mentioned, and
I think Tatum like just saw the big wing, you know.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
Three four Tweeer.
Speaker 4 (21:01):
Yeah, but he's he's so good man.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
Yeah, he's nice. And I have I'm gonna be putting
some money on Duke. I'll be writing it up for
Fox Sports. I like, you have to have a future
ticket on Duke to win the touch, you just have
to among other teams. Anyways, we'll wrap up with the NBA.
Obviously big game tonight, Warriors at Nick's, Steph Curry at MSG.
It's going to be a show. We know that Lakers
are hosting Zion and which should be a bloodbath the
(21:26):
Pelican stink. That being said, the big story right now
in the NBA is what is and we're still waiting
on word on how bad Kyrie Irving's injury is. Drove
the lane. Couldn't tell if he fully stepped on the
oppollionon or just landed hard, but it definitely looked like
his knee gave out. He went down in a nod
(21:47):
to Kobe, he went to the free throw line, shot
the free throws. You could see tears coming out of
his eyes as he's shooting the free throws. His teammates
like carried him off the court. It did not look
good there the early return to Arts of Sprain. That
would be the best case scenario. This is a walking
wounded Mavericks team that just I mean, they end up
(22:09):
getting smashed by the Kings. They are not. I don't
want to say they're down bad. But you know, when
you lose Kyrie that early in the game and you've
got to rely on Ky Jones, the former Texas big
man to play heavy minutes, super Max, Christie Logan thirty
four minutes, their starters just got obliterated early and often
(22:33):
it's just a crap season for Dallas. Like you know,
I guess you trade for Anthony Davis rich injury history.
Kyrie Irving has had an injury history, and now your
two bigs are out plays not do anything like they're
starting Dante Exem Dwight Powell, Kessler Edwards. I don't know, man,
this could go I mean, we already think that the
(22:53):
trade for Luca is gonna go down in history is
one of the worst of all time. I saw a
tweet that the MAVs don't control their own first round
picks in twenty seven twenty eight, twenty nine, and thirty. Jeez,
this this could go very south, very quickly. And you know,
(23:16):
with every injury, with every loss, Nico Harrison, how did
you screw us like this? And compounding that matters, the
Lakers are rolling Luca coming off his best game as
a Laker from shooting through three. I think you and
I agreed, lucas not even close to one hundred percent.
I mean, I feel for the MAVs, Rob, but I
mean I'm just so geeked about the Lakers right now.
It's stuff to feel that bad. I know you're fired up.
Speaker 4 (23:39):
Yeah, I mean, first and foremost, we hope Kyrie's okay.
Hopefully it's not as bad as it looked, because it
looked really bad. And to your point, when he was
crying shooting those free throws and there's a twenty pauses
before he actually goes up to release and he says
thank you God under his breath, yeah I saw that.
And when you get Lebron James tweeting about you in
the wheel overnight hours, that tells me it's not very good,
(24:00):
because you know, I don't think Lebron throws up a
tweet like that, saying like praise up to Kyrie if
it's your basic twisted knee and he's out for two
to three, you know, I don't I don't see that happening.
But I don't feel bad for the MAVs because, you know,
as an organization, the way they've handled this Luca thing
(24:21):
has been unbecoming of an NBA franchise, And I think
that I'm not gonna say it's karma, but it's just,
you know, it's hard to feel bad for a franchise
that that's acted in such a way.
Speaker 3 (24:30):
I feel terrible for Kyrie Irving.
Speaker 4 (24:33):
Number one and MAVs fans number two, because they didn't
ask for this. Nine months ago, they were in the
NBA Finals, thinking that their window was as wide open
as anybody in the Western Conference.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
You got, you got the best.
Speaker 4 (24:48):
Young player arguably in the league in Luka Dancic. You
got a number two in Kyrie Irving, who seems to be,
you know, on the right path mentally and emotionally, and
your team is building something. Now you flash forward, Luca's gone.
Kyrie at least is temporarily gone. A d the guy
you acquired, and the Luca trade is hurt Derek Lively's hurt,
(25:09):
Daniel Gaffer's hurt, Kayla Martin's hurrt PJ. Washington out of
the lineup. And then on top of this, I don't
know if you even saw this. On Monday, for whatever reason,
and they say it's a coincidence, the MAVs announced that
they are raising the ticket prices for next season by
eight percent.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
Come on, no way.
Speaker 4 (25:30):
Like, what did Dallas Mavericks fans do to deserve this
whammy after whammy after whammy in the last two months.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
It's it's become it's you can't.
Speaker 4 (25:44):
Even laugh at it. It's so sad, like this is
just terrible. And again, hopefully Kyrie is okay because they're
currently three and a half games up on the playing
over the Phoenix Suns. The Phoenix does look like they've
quit on the season, so they might get regardless, but
I'm not expecting much out of Dallas as much.
Speaker 5 (26:03):
As we like.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
Here's the other thing, Miico Harrison, such a miscalculation. The
reason Kyrie Irving worked was because he was playing the
number two to Luca. The reason that gafferd and PJ.
Washington fit so seamlessly. Gaffer was splitting time with Lively,
he was catching lobs from Luca. Okay, PJ Washington was
hitting corner threes, like all that stuff goes away where
(26:28):
there's no Luca and Kyrie on the court, Like it's
just not the same. And the idea that they thought
that this could be the same, I don't know, Rob,
the more and more you think about it, and yes,
I have heard I'm not gonna say that, but you
hear that, like, man, the conspiracy theorists have stuff and
you're like, no way, no way, no way, And then
(26:50):
you know you start thinking, you're like, wait a minute,
what really went down between Nico and Luca.
Speaker 1 (26:56):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation yet. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports
Radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio app search FSR
to listen live.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
There had to be a breaking point, right, There's no
way you could just come upon this like, oh, Luca,
he's slow to come back because he's fat and he's
drinking beer and he's doing the hookah, Like there's just
no way you trade him for that. There had to
have been some singular event that maybe was the last straw,
if you will. There had to be something, Rob, don't
you think that. I I just I mean again, Nico
(27:29):
Harrison has had a lot of hits as a GM,
but this is such a whiff that nobody's gonna remember
any of the hits.
Speaker 4 (27:36):
Yeah, and all the hits became hits because of Luka Doncic. Yeah,
they were all hits because they'd all revolved around the
sun that is Luca.
Speaker 3 (27:44):
I'll tell you what I don't particularly, I mean, I'll lie.
Speaker 4 (27:49):
I love dabbling in the conspiracy theory tinfoil hats. I
think that's fun, it's entertaining. And while I disagree with
the idea that there was one singular moment, I think
it had to have been accumulation of things.
Speaker 3 (28:03):
I will say I.
Speaker 4 (28:04):
Believe that more than the one going around that this
was an effort to tank the franchise, alienate the fan
base so they can move to Las Vegas.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
Because IVE heard that one has heard that. I thought
you were gonna mention the whole that we don't want
to pay him three hundred and forty five million.
Speaker 4 (28:19):
Nonsense, No, I mean the price is the price now,
Like it sounds crazy to you and I because we don't, well,
it sounds crazy to me because I don't make a
kind of money. I know you and Colin are kind
of you know, you're in that.
Speaker 5 (28:30):
Upper upper knee in Collin Me not me, bro, But
like that's the going rate now, like very soon, Jason
Tatum's gonna have a contract that's gonna be closing in
like eighty.
Speaker 3 (28:42):
Million dollars a year by the end.
Speaker 4 (28:43):
Yeah, Jaalen Brown, same deal, right, Jayalen Brown is gonna
have a contract like that when Victor Winn Benyama is
super Max eligible at his whatever seventh, eight, nine, ten season,
He's gonna be making one hundred million dollars plus a season.
Like that's just gonna be the price. So I don't
think that that's the issue. I think, like I said,
I don't like dabbling too much in the conspiracy theory.
Speaker 3 (29:04):
But whether it was a single moment with Luca or
this is the idea.
Speaker 4 (29:08):
Where the ownership really wanted that casino next to the
arena and they shot it down because the didn't allow
casinos in Texas and this is a way for them
to piss off the Dallas fan base so much to
a point, Oh wait, did move to Las Vegas?
Speaker 2 (29:23):
I mean, hold up, hold it that that's interesting. So
I didn't hear about the casino thing. Interesting, Okay, So
I think I told you this when the MAVs announced
that Cuban was selling, I think that was it. I
fished around and I was like, what's going on. Something
big must be going on, and they were like, Oh,
(29:44):
they want to build this huge super complex in the
Dallas area where they're making it like an LA Live situation.
Philadelphia has a similar when you get all the ballparks
like in the same area, you make it hotels, bars, restaurant,
you make it like a destination, right and now, because
gamble is legal, you get casinos in there. So I
had heard that that was the game plan for Dallas.
(30:06):
Now what you're saying is the casino got mixed and
now the team is what threatening to move.
Speaker 4 (30:12):
I mean, that's what the NBA Reddit crowd kind of
stuff that that's what's out there. Again, I don't think
I necessarily believe that, because I believe and now this
is another conspiracy, I believe the NBA already has a
backdoor deal for Vegas.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
I think Lebron's getting that franchise.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
Lebron's getting it. Yeah, he's not retiring anytime soon.
Speaker 4 (30:31):
So I mean, they're not gonna be ready for several
years anyways, right to have the arena and all that stuff.
But I think that there is a wink wink, nudge
nudge kind of deal that Hey, there might be guys
Jeff Bezos, you know, Eli must depending what happens there
with the presidency, who are gonna have more liquid assets
where they could buy or bid higher number for that
Vegas franchise. But they say, hey, Lebron, you and your
(30:54):
group get them together. Whoever these hedge funt guys are,
You're gonna get the first crack at it.
Speaker 2 (30:59):
I don't hate that. We'll wrap up with this rop
And this just hit me as I was listening to you.
I'm gonna say some names here. Okay, Well, first of all,
the NBA has had this big push because they're they're
they're leaning into this social media nonsense of the players
don't play. Nobody ever plays. It's so stupid. They're lazy,
(31:20):
they don't want to play hard, and the dumb NBA
is now enacting all these You got to play a
lot of rules to be eligible for the awards, which
makes you eligible for the super Max and all that.
So players are playing more and sitting less. I'm gonna
say three names for you, Joel Embiid, Victor Wembin Yama,
(31:42):
Kyrie Irving, assuming the Kyrie Irving thing is bad now
Webben Yama blood clots. Maybe you chuck it up to
no big deal. We'll see on Kyrie.
Speaker 4 (31:51):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (31:52):
I know I'm in the minority rope. I want my
players playing less games. I don't give a rats ass
that Michael Jordan played eighty two games five seasons in
a row. Who cares? Who cares? I want Lebron right
around sixty six to seventy and I want him fresh
for the playoffs. And I know, Jay, there is dubious
(32:14):
collection between playing a lot and injuries. Okay, anybody who
I get it. There isn't a ton of data that
one thousand percent backs that up. If you play eighty games,
you will get hurt. No, no, but your odds of
getting hurt go up the more you play. And especially,
wouldn't you know it, em Beat and Kyrie are in
(32:36):
their thirties. Now, Lebron, a physical Marvel, is in his forties.
We need Lebron in the playoffs. Okay, we need Luca
in the playoffs. We need stars in the playoffs. Okay,
this is not that different than backup quarterbacks. You guys,
remember when Joe Flacco had that magical room with the
Browns got to the playoffs. What happened against the Titans.
(32:57):
It's proba like thirty backup quarter do not fare well
in the playoffs. They don't win games. It's really really
friggin tough. Now, Nick Foles, big dick, Nick, Yeah he
came through. Okay, fine, how many of those? How many
other examples are there that if usually if you have
a backup quarterback, you're getting smashed? So again, I know,
players gotta play. Look at these guys spending money all
(33:18):
those tickets. Amen, you know, I get it you're upset
that you paid and John Morant sitting out or whatever.
But you know what, it ain't always about you. Maybe
it's about everybody else. And maybe everybody else would rather
watch job Morant in the first round well, or Nicola
(33:39):
Jokic or Lebron. I mean, we're all excited now that
Steph Curry and the Warriors are up to the sixth seed.
They were looking at missing the playoffs for the Jimmy
Butler deal. Now it's like, yes, we got Curry, We
got Curry in the playoffs, we got Lebron Kawhi Leonard's
actually playing basketball games.
Speaker 1 (33:55):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
So like you know, that to me is exciting.
Speaker 1 (34:00):
Rob.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
I know it's going to be a minority taken and
people are gonna hate it, but I'm sorry. I want
my guys in the playoffs. And no Embiide kind of
sort of stinks, Philly was ascending. No Wee Mignall obviously stinks.
Blood clots will give it, you know, a pass. And
then Kyrie Irving. That's that's terrible. I mean, Dallas was
such a show last year in the playoffs. Look at
that Minnesota series, the OKC series phenomenal. So I don't know,
(34:24):
I'm ranting and I don't know. I just want my
guys healthy.
Speaker 4 (34:27):
That's it didn't seem with too much to ask. I mean,
I know we're up against its all to make it.
QUI here's the question for you. This could be its
own pot in itself. Are you the kind of guy
who would rather have fifteen, sixteen, seventeen years of Steph
(34:47):
Curry playing sixty five games or ten eleven twelve years
of Steph Curry paying eighty two oh that's a no,
that's ultimately that's both of the conversation.
Speaker 2 (34:58):
Who on earth would say, yeah, I want fewer years
of Steph Curry but that just I'm not going to
get into it with you, but that would be me.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
Really, I'd rather my guys play.
Speaker 2 (35:09):
So you would have rather had two fewer years of
of Kobe?
Speaker 4 (35:15):
And just to see what a fewer years of Kobe?
You know, because of all the injuries.
Speaker 2 (35:21):
Let's see when did Kobe We clearly look up his stats,
I forget was he was he the like thirty seven.
Speaker 3 (35:26):
He was broke down like for forty Yeah.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
Thirty seven was his final season and uh he averaged
like seventeen points a game. Yeah, but thirty five, thirty six,
thirty seven were brutal. I mean, this goes back to
like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, I know, Hiv, Isaiah Thomason, Jordan.
I mean, but remember Jordan also quit to go play baseball.
So we got like a year and a half vacation,
(35:48):
get twice, I mean. And that's the other thing, like
I would much again, what what are what are games
in January February March? Like how rare are those that
you remember? You were remember the playoff games. I can
still remember Lebron locking up d Rose. Do you remember
that series? M h, yeah, I mean that was phenomenal.
I can't tell you any like regular season games really
(36:09):
really hard to remember, but like that series where Derrek
Rose won the MVP and he was cooking and all
of a sudden, Lebron's like, guys, I got this, and
that was it for Derrick Rose. You know, I can
remember a lot of Lebron playoffronts. Lebron in the playoffs
against Deshaun Stevenston and the Wizards. That was a battle.
Those guys hated each other. So I mean, so I
(36:30):
don't know I lean on playoffs, but I know I'm
sure there's a segment of the population out there who's like, no, Jay,
you're wrong, we should play eighty two. I don't know, man,
Seth Curry looks pretty damn good at thirty six. I mean,
look at Kevin Durant, what's he thirty seven?
Speaker 3 (36:42):
Thirty seven?
Speaker 2 (36:43):
He's still top fifteen in the league in scoring. I
know he's out winning anything, but I don't know that
that's totally on him. By the way. Interesting note, former
Sons coach Frank Vogel is going to be at something
that I may pop into Wednesday, So if you have
any you know, questions you want me to ask for
vocal about his time in Phoenix. Rob, You guys, we
(37:06):
don't want to hear about Lakers stories. I would like
to hear how miserable the Phoenix situation? I mean, Rob,
that was he was one and done?
Speaker 3 (37:14):
Oh yeah?
Speaker 4 (37:17):
Is Kevin Durant as miserable as he seems online?
Speaker 3 (37:20):
What I want to know?
Speaker 2 (37:21):
That's a great question. I'll pull him to the side
and try to ask him that. All right, this is
a long one. I'm out see tomorrow.
