in the NBA today, the Lakers and the Celtics, and
is a much different Lakers team than it was just
fifteen twenty games ago.

National championship, won national Championship, the actual championship, the NBA
Finals last season. But I'm joined here with athletic NBA
writers Zach Harper. Zach, welcome to Fox Sports Radio.

This is great and.

I can't imagine a better time to have you with
the NBA.

You know, really full what am I looking for? Going
into full swing?

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Getting rile up with the Lakers on their stretch that
they've been on Boston. Are they playing with their food?
How do they look, the Knicks camp eat anybody good?
It's Cleveland? Actually good? Are they Oklahoma City? From last year?

Speaker 3 (01:04):
You know, all this stuff going on in the NBA.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
But right now we're thirty minutes away from the Lakers
and the Celtics tipping off in the team. The Lakers
now with the two seed in the West, which if
you had asked us that, you know, before the trade deadline, Yeah, right, yeah,
it sounds nice. I'm sure you have a Lakers fan.
You're you know, you're sleeping in Lakers you know, sheets
and pillowcases and all that if you believe the Lakers
would be the two seat. Now that's where we are

(01:26):
and the Celtics, who have been you know, not necessarily
as dominant as they were last year, but you the champions,
so you're not the champs no more.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Right, I think the Celtics are just whatever. They're just
trying to get through the season right like they've been,
you know, hit with some injuries. Drew Holliy has been,
now Christas Perzi has been. Now, Guys in and out
of the lineup for the most part. They know, we're healthy,
we're in the playoffs. Also, we're in the East. We
got one team to worry about, that's the Calves. And
even then, I don't know. I think they respect the Calves.
I don't know how worried they are, right, I think
they believe their peak is better than anything. And last

year playoffs, Celtics quick work, quick work, like just march
through it like it was like it was nothing. The Lakers.
This started before the Luka Doncich trade, right like about
I don't know, mid December, late December. They started like
getting good defensively. And this is a team that couldn't
defend at all, like first twenty twenty five games this season,
couldn't defend it all. All of a sudden, this team's defending.

(02:16):
You're like, Okay, I don't know if I if I
buy it, I think there's a ceiling. I still don't
think they can beat Denver, but whatever, they make the
Luca trade, and I'll fully admit I said this is
a great trade for the future. I mean that was
the comment. I thought so too. For now, it doesn't
mean anything other than maybe a second round exit. Right,
Except here's the thing. Since the Luca trade, they've gotten
better defensively. How you trade Anthony Davis for Luka Doncic

get better offensively, I get it defensively. That's insane for me.

The one thing that I I mean fully to me,
NBA head coaching is for all the major sports, head
coaching in the NBA is almost the least important. Yeah right,
when you consider just you've thrown guys out there. You
gotta ferrires your lineups, and you gotta manage egos, but
the actual exces and o's of it all, It's much
more important to me in the NBA if your players
are actually happy than if you're actually a good coach.

Like part of being a coach is keeping your players happy.
Not the same in the NFL, Major League Baseball, so on.
But so I completely underrated the idea that JJ Redick
would be like an impact coach year one, like, and
I wasn't all the way in the Lebron camp of
Lebron is hiring guys, but I still was like, I
don't see sure, he's young, should be relatable, but I
don't know how much of a you know access, I said, say,

like to me, you tell me, because the team, like
you said, defense has gotten better.

They trade who everybody thinks is one of the best defenders.
In the NBA.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
For everybody knows. It's one of the worst defenders in
the NBA. Somehow improved defensively. Get over the regular season
hump of beating Denver a team, and that's the team
Denver and those like it with those big seven footers
like Eric Gordon and Nicola ok you name it, Oklahoma
City with those big guys. Those are the teams that
are supposed to make this team go through hell, and
they're not. Like Jackson Hayes was the punchline of all this.

He's not playing tonight, but just go what he had
nine to nine from the floor, eighteen points in the
first half.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Let me say this, Offensively, he can just go get
a lob. Yeah, like he like Offensively, his job is
super easy, like be tall, be athletic, catch it, sure,
catch it, put it down right. And you're playing with Luke,
You're playing with Lebron. There's I mean, two of the
absolute best passers we've ever seen. Defensively, I think someone
in the crowd could jingle some keys, he would get distracted.

(04:26):
Like defensively, he's still he's trying to block shots he shouldn't.
He shouldn't block, and that he can't get to and compromises.
But the reason they're so good defensively one was to
pick up a Dorian Finney Smith. He's changed things. And
then they got Jared Vanderbilt back, who missed like eighty
straight game, like legitimately eighty straight games kind of the playoffs,
and he is someone that just disrupts everything that the

offense is trying to do on the other end of
the floor. Like he he's an unbelievable defender. And here's
the here's the real key. Lebron's defending again, Lebron's taking
like three four years off defending and even like weak
side help, Like there will be times where they give
up a wide open dunk over the last couple of years,
and I'll look, I'm like, wait, who was supposed to
rot to? Oh, Lebron was supposed to rotate. That's crazy,
Like he's the one who's supposed to know all this stuff, right.

(05:10):
But with Luca, he can take some of that offensive
responsibility away from Lebron. He's got more energy and he's
been defending great recently. So I think all those factors,
I'm still not sold on this. Jackson Hayes is your
only center thing. I think that could end up really
hurting them. But if you stop the point of attack
before it gets to the big man, which is basically
what they've been doing for two months now, it might work. Now.

(05:31):
So watching the Celtics last year as they were just.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Walking through the playoffs and even you know this year,
as they're still not exactly having trouble, right, you know,
I'm looking at this team and they while Porzingis was
out for most of that postseason run, and so I
thought that might have been you know, because you know,
if you go back into the history of it all,
it's like the Celtics can't get over the hump. They
get Porzencas now they get over the hump, but then
he's out. So now we're right back in the same spot.

But looking at that team, he usually evaluate man, these
guys are so long, and Derek White and the non
star players still very long.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
That's what the Lakers look like to me.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Now they don't necessarily have the big but like you said,
you have all these wing players who can disrupt offense.
To me, that's what Boston did all postseason defensively, and
that's why Jalen Brown got the Finals MVP because he
was just locking up Lucas, killing the ball from him
and going and Duncan on the other side. So with that,
I ask you, are we looking tonight at an NBA
Finals preview right now?

Speaker 3 (06:28):
I know the league would like that to be the case. Absolutely,
the league would love another Lakers Celtics NBA Finals. I
think it's a possibility. I don't know how good of
a possibility it is, because Okay, see, they're still unproven.
They're historic in terms of regular season no one has
ever dominated the way they're dominating the regular season, highest
margin of victory ever, like ever, and it's not really

that close. Denver still has Nikola Jokic, and if they're
in I don't know what happened mid season. Someone injected
life back into Jamal Murray. He is all of a
sudden like a good player again, because he was terrible
last year. He was terrible in the Olympics, he was
terrible to start this year, and now he's back whatever
knee injury, like he's fine. And so with those two cooking,

I get it. The Lakers recently beat the Nuggets and
beat him badly, and everyone was pointing to JJ Reddick's
podcast with Lebron where they're like, I would defend Yokic
this way, and then they did, which was basically like
fronting the post, if you want to get like real
nerdy about it, like they're they're fronting the post and
they've got weak side help and backside help and everything,
and they kind of denied yok getting the ball. This
was a regular season game. You get to a postseason series,

(07:36):
you're not like, it's not that no one's ever thought
to front Nikol Yokic before, like that.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
It's not a strategy. It's just like, oh no, we
should do double team, yes, right, yeah, I mean obviously,
you know, after a while, it's like you're sitting there
on the TV, You're sitting there on the couch yelling
they should really put two on them. Yeah, no kidding,
and gay coaches to figure that one out.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
Right, He's a counter So I want to see what
that looks like, because if he's going, you cannot stop him,
like they're just there's no stopping him at all. But
but I do think if you had to give me,
if you told me, like, all right, pick pick a
team out of the West, I think the Lakers will
be my.

I'm worried that obviously it might be too little, too
late in terms of standings in the way everything breaks down.

I love the Warriors, but quickly on the Lakers when
they made this trade, I agree with. I was in
the same boat of they don't have enough size. First
of all, once I realized it was actually a real trade,
I was like, they don't have enough size inside. Then
they trade for Mark Williams, and I was like, that's
cool enough. But Mark Williams, you know, even taking PTO,
Like you know what I'm saying, He's not there a lot.

So I don't know how this is going to be
the answer that everybody is thinking that is going to be.
But I in the back of my head, I was like,
you know what, because you know, you see immediately everybody's
got to have a take right after the treak who won,
you know, because obviously all the games has been played,
we could all really decide, you know, But I'm sitting
there thinking, man, I'm watch an NBA Finals last year,

in an NBA postseason last year where I'm watching Luka
Doncics just dominate the ball and kick the ball into
the corner the PJ Washington, Uh, PJ Washington, and you know, like.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
Like, this is not.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
Listen, this is not you know, this is not the
top of the top, This is not the threat you think.
I mean, I watched they traded for two guys from
the Hornets. Are the Hornets and the Wizards, Gafford and Washington,
And all of a sudden, it's like, this is this
team just skyrocketed up the Western Conference.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
Standard, Like I'm not seeing the same.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
It's like, But then I'm sitting there like, you know what, man,
Lucas handling the ball, And it happened to just the
other night, Lebron James was wide open for a corner three,
and I couldn't remember. I don't watch every single Lebron game,
but I have. It's been twenty some years. I'm familiar
with the career. I can't remember the last time Lebron
was open for a corner three.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
Like he'll leak out a little bit and like kind
of get to a spot and he'll be open. You're like, oh,
we got an open jump shot.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
Not in the offensive yeah, yet half court set where
somebody else is set in a pick and roll and
Lebron is just.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
In the courtner usually running the pick and roll, and
so you can't pass to himself. That's that's illegal. You
can't do that. So yeah, I'm with you, like it.
It adds something. And Lebron the last season and a half,
and he's done a couple other years in his career.
Last season a half dude is lethal from deep, like
he is hitting threes. Like, you can't leave him open.

(10:40):
You can't leave him open, and beforehand you had no
other choice to go.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
Why would you leave him? Who actually gonna guard? Now
you gotta guard Luca, who I mean don't get a
little so slow as me on the basketball court, but
does everything else much better than I ever would dream to.
But I do think that with this the idea that
this Lakers team, if they can rebound, I think that's
gonna be their key, right because like, I'm not worried
about the bigs of And part of the reason.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
Why I'm not talking about the Celtics. I don't think
they're out, no worries.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
Celtics are walking through the Eastern Conference finals to me,
walking through the East to the finals. So I believe
Boston will be representing this thing. I think Cleveland might put.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
Out a better showing. Yeah, but.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
Six games for two Boston I think is realistic with like,
maybe you feel really good about the way Game five
ended if you're Cleveland, but like it's not gonna be
like an embarrassment or anything like that. But here, I
look at the bigs that the Lakers would have to
run into, and mainly Oklahoma City and Denver. Like you
outlined Oklahoma City's biggs, they're kind of they are not

(11:41):
necessarily in the Joel Andbid type. They're very skinny, they're thin,
and I think that guys like Vanderbilt and Lebron and
so on, they can push those guys around very hotchema, right,
they can push those guys around on the glass. So
if they can rebound and get out and run, I
think that the Lakers sky's the limit for for Los Angeles,

(12:01):
that'll be the key. Canny defensive rebounds, especially the way
they're playing defense, where the you know, making you know,
it's kind of like the Bootenholzer thing from when he
was with Milwaukee, except they don't have a room protector. Right,
We're gonna force you to shoot threes that we want
you to shoot so that they can rebound. That the
sky's a limit.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
Yeah, I mean they You made a good point earlier
about you know how Boston is just super long everywhere, right,
Like Derek White has crazy wingspan, true Holliday crazy wingspan,
even though they're like six two sixty three. They they
can ty shoes standing up, Tyler shoes standing up. They
can they can do whatever, right, they can block shots,
they can contest. That is the key. Like the only
small guy for the Lakers is Gabe Vincent. Like Gabe

(12:39):
Vincent is the only guy who is not very big,
but even then he's a pretty good defender. Like he's
not gonna he's not gonna disrupt shots, but he can rotating,
can take charges all that stuff. Everyone else super long.
You know, Luca's not all that athletic, but he at
least rebounds and that, like to your point, that's the key.
It sounds so basic, but you can force his many

misshots as you want. You can't grab the damn ball,
Like it doesn't really matter, so you have to you
got to clear the glass. I think they'll be doing
that because while they did lose a lot defensively, just
in terms of ad for Luca, lucas a great rebounder,
oh yeah, great rebounder, not just for his position, just period.
Like he wants to go get a ball, He'll go
get a ball. So there's a triple double exactly. So

that like they've got everything covered unless Yokich is just
got Zilla out there and then there's nothing you can do.

Yeah, it's interesting, Like, man, I'm so sick of the
internet because everyone just sucks up to everybody, now, right,
You're just sucking up to athletes or celebrities constantly. Right,
So I saw I saw the video at first, and
I see, like, I don't know, it's probably like Bleach
Reporter or House of Highlights of one of those aggregate
people that don't actually like create anything that people take

everything's exactly yeah, which apparently is a good is a
good US drift? Yeah, this model. But I see that
and like ooh, Lebron and Stephen Ann like who cares? Okay,
So they talked, right, because I didn't get what was happening. Sure,
and then when I saw like maybe an hour later,
it's like, oh no, this was angry. This was like
this was some body language little point. Body language point.

You start reading some lips and start here seeing some
words that you know you're not allowed to say on
certain certain airwaves, and so I like, then I all right,
now I'm interested. Now I'm interested in what's going on.
And to your point, yes, part of this business. Look,
we say a lot of stuff, say a lot of things.
You show up to that locker room. You got to
be able to take it right. Like I tell I

tell people Jackson Hayes isn't good if Jackson Hayzn wants
to confront me right like it was nine for nine
of the first half.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
Yeah, and you jumped at everything the second half, Like,
but yeah, like that that happens.

The thing about this is I I don't know that
it needed to be content. I don't know that it
needed to be addressed by stephen A. But it's smart
for him to do it. Oh of course, great ratings, great,
great virality and all that stuff. For Lebron. This is
what both you signed up for, and you signed up
for as a father, right, like you you helping your

kid get to the Lakers. I believe Bronnie would have
made a team regardless, Like I think you'd spend him
a lot of time in the G League, but he
would have gotten drafted regardless. I think people need to
remember he was a pretty solid prospect in high school
and then he had a heart attack like that, Like
that takes a long time to get old, right like that.
That's a serious physically and mentally. Yes, absolutely, and so

people like want to say, oh, he's not that good whatever,
I think he'll be fine. I think he's I think
he's an NBA player on some level like down the road.
But when you get him to your team, then you
are opening things up to where people are going to criticize.
And that is part of the game. Like whether it's
your son, whether it's your brother, whether it's your cousin,
no matter what you're in the NBA, you're gonna get criticized.

(18:59):
You can be as is lebron You get criticized constantly, right,
and so that's part of what you signed up for
by him being an NBA player. Also part of what
you signed up for by being a father. Sure, I
don't have any kids, but I don't like it when
people talk crazy about my dog. So I can't imagine
what it's like when you have a child, right, Like,
that's that's something, and stephen A has the biggest platform
to do that. I think Lebron was right to confront him.

I think stephen A was right to say it.

Speaker 2 (19:24):
Yeah, I don't have any problem with Lebron going up
to steven A and saying, basically, keep my son's name
out your mouth, and doubly have no problem with CVNA
having Bronni's name all you know speak, because here's the deal.
To Zack's point, you've entered your son into this arena.
Yeah right, It's not like Bronni is just a junior rate.
Let's say Bronni didn't hoop, it was a junior at

USC and was posting videos on Snapchat smoking weed consistently
every day. That's what he did. Nobody would care, right,
you know what I'm saying. Nobody would care. It wouldn't
matter because he's not involved in this, right, he's not.
We are criticized concept of essentially walking your son through
the door, right, And to that point, I also believe

that Brianni would have been an NBA player to the
point where you had teams that were.

So I think that maybe just maybe somebody was trying
to draft like there was Like I don't think that
was just you know, conspiracy, despite Lebron's that because again
again I mean and just just fundamentally, how many how
many kids of NBA players are in the league, like
Jalen Brunts and Jaron Jackson, Klay Thompson, Like this not
crazy conceptually to take a flyer on one of the

top three greatest players of all times.

Kid, that's not insane.

However, that doesn't mean that we're not gonna sit here
and say this guy's not ready for this league the
same way that he was a fifty fifth pick.

I don't know this to be true, and.

If maybe you do, but I would bet you picks
fifty through sixty also aren't ready for this league like
they also are.

You just don't know who they are now.

I do think though, like the whole I would honestly yield,
I would have appreciated more if Bronnie had done it.
Oh like if Brian and I'm not saying that Bronnie
is not doing this, so I'm not trying to condemn
him for saying, but be your own man. You're a pronoun.
You get your checks the same way. Look that your
dad does right, direct deposit from. You got the same boss.

You show up to the same job, right. I would
have liked it better if Bronnie had gone up and said, hey,
you know what, let me carve my own path. I'm
here now. You may not like the way I got here,
but to me, it's one more addition into the saga
of what the whole Brinnie? This is one more moment
where Dad kind of stepped in the way of Bronnie

to me, having a chance to mature, because by a
certain point, you got to go out there and stand
on your own two feet. And we've had I'm not
calling lebron overbearing. I don't think that's star, but we've
seen that dads who have been really really involved in kids'
lives and ever after throw a while a line of
balls to stay. No, Dad, I'm gonna wear my own
damn shoes right now.

I'm gonna want to wear shoes.

I want to keep messing up my knees. I want
to wear nikes, dads, this is where it's gonna be
because I'm my own man. I'm a millionaire in my
own right now. I appreciate everything that you did for

make my own decisions. I would That's the only criticism
that I would have liked to have seen, because I
think I'll you know, I would have loved to see
what Steve and they had to say about that.

he kind of just like be walking up to him

or does he need to figure that like you just
