to get to the playoffs, and this is a matter
of opinion, but do a poor coaching job in the
very first game that you've ever coached in the playoffs.

Thing, my opinion, to then go to a press conference
and use a sentence that goes something like this, they
surprised us with their physicality.

Okay, A, you can't be surprised by their physicality.

That's not You cannot go to the playoffs and be
surprised by physicality. But number two, my goodness, don't go
say that to a microphone. Don't go sitting listen, JJ Redick,
he has had a wonderful rookie year as a head coach.
My god, last night he looked and sounded like a rookie.

I agree with that, but I'm not gonna put the
onus on JJ Reddick. Okay, JJ Redick, last I checked,
can't shoot a shot, ye, can't guard anybody on the wing,
can't close out and run him off the three point line,
and can't put forth the effort it takes to win
a game, let alone a playoff series. So JJ Redick

can come to the microphone, he can say whatever he
wants to say, he can wax poetic, and he can
sound like he may be a bit over his skis
or whatever. That is. The bottom line is the Lakers
didn't show up. The Lakers underestimated Minnesota. They underestimated the
fact that this was a playing team and this was
a team that was reeling. They felt like they could

just show up and this team with a young, budgeting,
burgeoning superstar, was just going to be happy to be there.
And they got kicked in the mouth. And I'm all
for it, because if you come to the playoffs with
that type of effort, you deserve to get your teeth

kicked in. And so now you have to go back.
You don't get a day off. One of these days,
either today or tomorrow, is going to be a practice day.
You don't just have film study. Now you have to
make adjustments now. As good as JJ Reddick was this year,
and I think I thought he should have been a

one of the finalists for Coach of the Year, anytime
you have a guy who was his first time coaching
ever and you have such a huge shake up in
your your roster. Albeit you got a top five player back,
but putting that together and winning fifty games, I thought

he there should have been some consideration there. I mean,
he was a podcast guy, uh and a and a broadcaster,
and here he has the Lakers in the three seed. Now,
with all that said, none of that matters anymore. It's
what you do from here on out. I don't care
what your regular season record was. And so hopefully they're

taking the foot out of their teeth understanding the effort
and the levels you have to play every game home
or away. And we get to see the Laker team
we've all been waiting to see in the playoffs on Tuesday.

Well, they better win it.

Have to win it. The must win game in the
second game of the of the playoffs comes.

It's the it's the only home team that has lost
a basketball the only one.

of these together, which I'm excited about. So we'll we'll
we'll talk about all that as it starts to unfold.
But you're absolutely right that, I mean, losing the first
two at home and then winning a series is a
huge rarety. It's happened before, and it's a very very
huge rarity and a couple things to throw at you
that I'm going to say, it's too early to make

these statements, but eyebrow up, and I'm watching for this
because sometimes playoffs bring about narratives, right, It's kind of
like you said, I'll give you this example. Remember the
Dallas Cowboys a couple of years ago, Yes, Dallas Cowboys.

Well, win the division and sweet whatever.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
They won twelve games and home for the playoffs and
all of the wonderful things. And then they went out
there and the Green Bay Packers made a mockery of
the Dallas Cowboys.

And it was at that point, and only at that point,
that people went.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Oh, hold on a second, let's dive deeper on this,
let's go back on the schedule, And it became very evident.

You're like, oh, you know what I noticed you never
beat a good.

Team all year long, and so you actually were a
little bit of a paper tiger, maybe a little bit.
I'm not going to say that about the Los Angeles Lakers.
These are some accomplished basketball players. But Ephraim, here's a
narrative I'm looking at and wondering if a week and
a half from now we might put more energy into it.

And it's this, The Lakers are top heavy. Last night,
three players all did their thing to varying levels. I'm
not going to say it was a banner game for
Lebron James. It was just a nice game for Austin Reeves.
Luca was fantastic. But outside of those three players, let

me count them up. Let's see eight plus five. That's
thirteen plus ten. Yeah, twenty three points by the rest
of the basketball team, and a whole lot of standing
around watching all time greats or all star level players
kind of do their thing.

And you know the playoffs. You know this a lot.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Of times playoff whether it's basketball, football, baseball, it comes
down to the other guys. Everybody knows kind of where
to focus their attention. Those guys have been there a
thousand times, are going to do their thing. But who's
gonna get somebody else to step up? In other words,
I watched nas Red score as many points as all

non Lakers outside of Luca Lebron and Austin Reeves.

There's your ball game.

Oh by the way, that's exactly pretty much how many
points you won the game by. So my eyes right
now are on who in a Laker jersey not named
one of those three guys is actually going to show
up and play some ball over the next week and
a half.

Well, it would have to be the guys who who
who got us here? Right? Rory coming back off the injury.
Before the injury, he was averaging right around nineteen twenty
points a game, which we need. Uh But then you
also had Vincent gave Vincent giving you shooting, giving you

fifteen points a game and shooting forty seven percent forty
three point line.

And that's the problem, right. Uh So it's those guys
and even Good when goodwe got himself a real life
contract because through the throughout the season he was that
guy who can come in and give you defensive pressure
and then hit down, hit the corner three or even
attack the rim. So guys weren't playing, they weren't playing
like themselves. And like I said, when I see things

like that, I immediately go to, oh, I get it. Well,
I'd see what's going on. They thought they were gonna
be able to show up. They thought they were gonna
be able to show up.

Would you think that you won one more game than
this team?

Exactly?

But and then like this is a very you know
what I've called the Minnesota Timberwolves all year long.

That's the number one they should be better team in
the NBA. And you're right, they're incredibly talented.

E And and if I were gonna place blame on JJ,
that's the only place I would put it there, right
because we all know who's the leader of this team,
So leron James. But JJ has to have the ability
to get everyone outside of Lebron or Luca to understand

what this game and what's about to happen. Now, not
having the experience of a seasoned head coach who's had
playoff runs, not a player, but a coach, we get
it all, right, But this is the Lakers, and the
learning curve is really it's steep, it's fast, and so

you're at a situation now where the world is watching,
especially all of Los Angeles. We're all watching for whatever
adjustment you're gonna make and the energy level that we're gonna,
you know, be witnessed to. On Tuesday.

Can I tell you something. I'm not gonna tell you
which one.

But an NBA play by play man said to me today,
and it was because everybody was watching Oklahoma City at home.

And then the next sentence will surprise you. He goes,
I'd actually be shocked if the Western Conference Finals is
not OKC hosting.

everybody got to hang out on the fourth quarter and
watch basketball. A bunch of people out there with Grizzlies
jerseys and okay See jerseys I'd never seen or heard

of before running around. This thing was over and over fast.
So conversation ensues that boy, okay See is obviously really
really legit, and a good friend of mine, who is
a radio play by play voice for one of the
NBA teams that's not in the playoffs said in a
group chat, he said, okay See is legit. I would

actually be shocked if the Western Conference Finals are not
OKAC hosting.

The Minnesota Timberwolves.

Now, one person's opinion, But it's a person who watches nothing,
but who travels around sees all these teams, sees them
from the inside out.

But that caught my attention that somebody thinks that and
would say it that way, I'd be shocked if those
aren't the last two teams in the West.

for someone to come out and say, like, I couldn't
pick two of the eight teams, right, I'm with you.

I'll set the bottom line and and it's taking off
your your homer hat or anything like that. I couldn't
possibly in a in a field of eight with talent everywhere,
I couldn't tell me the Western Conference team that doesn't

I mean, yeah, they're I guess the rockets the rockets, right,
And that's only that's the only answer.

And I think that's why people aren't really giving them
a shot, because when it comes down to it, people
who know and people who've watched and people who you know,
loved the NBA like we all have, they understand when
it comes down to it, who's going to be the
shot maker? Where is the ball going to run through?

And that just not about scoring, It's about when they
double you, can you make the right pass? Normally those
type of players and legacies are reserved for the superstars
because that's how they actually became superstars. And so Lebron

(17:36):
became Lebron because it was taking you, me, Steve de
Saga and Mary to the finals every year in the
Eastern Conference, right right, right, And so that only gets
you so far though, right, And I think the Rockets
are the one team in the West. They have a

lot of young energy, They have young young a couple
young superstars on the verge, Thomson and Green. They're right,
they they they are. This is going to add to
their lore right now, right like, so you have to

do something.

Yes, for sure.

But if they go through Golden State, which I don't
believe they will, but if they go through Golden State
and send all time greats home, this is how you
begin to get that. Yes now, you don't get it
until you do it. And so every other team in
the West has a super duperstar first second all NBA

team player on it except for Houston. So for me
to sit here and just be like, I know the
first two, I know the two that are gonna come out,
I couldn't do that, man, as much as I want
to say the Lakers is whoever else? Yeah, I really
have no idea.

I'm with you, I'm with you. There is actually only
I'll do it the other way. You know, he's talking
about picking two teams that'll be there in the end.
I'll just pick two teams that I think won't be

You ain't making But outside of that, and I do
give a special nod though to Oklahoma City. Like I
notice with the Thunder, they're so fantastic at home. They
only lost six basketball games there all year long. And
you watch what Memphis had to walk into and I
get that Memphis also had to play two playing games.

To get there.

Like that was an absolute buzz saw that I very
very firmly felt they would run into. I mean, you know,
if you want to take the conversation here for a second.
When I sat down and looked at all of the
Vegas numbers for the week, Oklahoma City at minus thirteen
and a half, I'm like, that's a joke. That's got
to be a joke. Memphis is not going to be

able to compete in this game. I did not predict
fifty one. No, no, no, Well, Memphis was in a
terrible spot today and we'll see if they can do
something different. But there's a larger point to be made,
which is that someone's going to probably to knock that
team out. Someone's gonna have to go, I would guess,

win potentially two basketball games in Oklahoma City because I
have a hard time believing that you're just gonna hold
serve in your building against them.

They're too good.

So you're like, that's a problem, efrom there's a problem
that someone's gonna have to go beat that team four
different times?

Speaker 3 (20:40):
Yes, yeah, a real problem. And look when Jaren Jackson,
who is an All NBA Guy Defensive Player of the Year,
when he goes two for thirteen with three rebounds and
four points, well.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
He might want to actually go within twelve feet of
the hoop at some point in his career.

Speaker 3 (20:59):
And guess what I've been he will this next time.
I get it right, right. So when you have Bain,
who was their knockdown shooter, go three for twelve, one
for six for nine points. Scottie Pittman Jr. Who's been
done had an amazing year, go for one for nine. Yeah,
you're gonna have. One of the great thing about the
playoffs is one game doesn't make a series. You can

get blown out in a game and come back and
win by fourteen, fifteen, twenty points. That's why I love
the playoffs. You could, I don't think they have enough. Yeah,
like you got to remember Shaye the You know, he
wasn't good at all.

And so that's how deep Sam Presty that, that's how
how dynamic he is in terms of he reminds me
of of a Jerry West when you when in terms
of putting teams together right, because he can see it's

The late game in about an hour will have Houston

hosting Golden State hamp Boston did win against Orlando. I
will say the Celtics only led by one early in
the third quarter and then turned it on one oh
three eighty six the final Derek White with thirty points.
You want to talk about turning it on the Oklahoma
City home game, it was a twenty to nothing run
in the second quarter. That was a pretty impressive run
by the Knicks. For example, last night, this was about that.

The thing is the thunder then led Memphis early third

Eventually the largest game one victory in playoff history at

the fifth, and as you reference, the NBA award finalists
are out. Finalists for Coach of the Year Cleveland's Kenny Atkinson,
he was already voted the Coaches Association Coach of the Year.

Emo Udoka of Houston, and the finalist for MVP, Shay

Giljess Alexander of Oklahoma City. You know, he did almost
nothing the first two or three quarters today and they
were up thirty. Nikola Jokic of Denver is an MVP finalist,
as is Milwaukee's Giannis Antennacumpo. In the NHL Playoffs, Carolina
a four to one winner over New Jersey. Right now
at Toronto, the Leafs lead for to one against Ottawa
in the second period. It's Vegas hosting Minnesota in an

hour and a half. Some of the Stanley Cup first
round series start on Monday. Plus there's Florida at Tampa
Bay game one. On two day, US women's hockey took
the World Championships, beating Canada in overtime four to three.
In the Czech Republic, Justin Thomas was the golf winner
in a playoff. NASCAR's Cup series was off for Easter.

Fox TV next Sunday. Major League Baseball Tonight, the Padres
are leading two to nothing at Houston bottom of the
fourth the Pods. Luis Ariaz was out taken off on
a stretcher after a collision at first. The Nationals are
playing two after a rainout on Friday, so they have
not only a day game, but now a night game.
The Nats are leading at Colorado one nothing, bottom of

they got to bat over fifty times. They were twenty
five of fifty one at the point Cincinnati Reds in
this game, which is not so bad considering by the
eighth inning they were pitching a German Shepherd Baltimore. But okay, fine,
you referenced earlier the blowouts in NBA playoff history. I

did happen to see a list. The record is still
a fifty eight point margin of victory in a postseason
game in the NBA two thousand and nine, Denver beat
New Orleans one twenty one to sixty three, and the
nineteen fifty six Lakers, the Minneapolis Lakers beat the Saint
Louis Hawks in a playoff game one thirty three to

seventy five. Those are the records. Fifty eight point wins
today OKC one by fifty one against Memphis updated Cleveland
up seventy six sixty seven on Miami in the third.

couple of those undrafted guys who got big contracts everywhere
else because well they were playing for Miami last year. Uh,
and so just just to see how hard they play
and compete, you can tell they're well coached. And I

want to give a shout out to them because they
are you know, it's no easy win. Now you can
just look at this game and be like, dang, if
Jimmy Butler was there, right, imagine what that was.
