Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Really Radio all over the
dream once again here on a fully loaded Sports Sunday.
This is Fox Sports Sunday and we are in the
Fox Sports Radio studios FEJ.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
We have.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
So many things to talk about over the course of
the show today. We got plenty of NFL news we're
gonna get to as we now get a full slate
of preseason football around the National Football League.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
We got baseball to talk about.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
We'll be reunited today with our dear friend John Paul
Morosi after the Hall of Fame festivities of a week ago.
But I think it's only appropriate that we start with
the subject matter that is near and dear to both
of us, and that was the out of left field
it got done. Yesterday the Los Angeles Lakers signed Luka
Doncic mission accomplish to a contract extension, and that means
(00:54):
it is open season now on what is next for
Lebron James, who, by the way, was absent from the
festivities yesterday. And by the way, the Lakers, if you
don't know this, we found out what was it a
month ago that Lebron had posted or rich Ball, his
representative posted that he would pick up his player option
(01:15):
for fifty two point six million. The Lakers have not
made any acknowledgment of that none. There hasn't been any statement,
no press release, nothing about the fact that Lebron is
going to be back. And yesterday it was funny because
Rob Polinka, obviously asked about Lebron, simply said, yeah, we
hope he will end his career as a Laker. So
(01:36):
now that they took care of the business, I want
to congratulate the Lakers for doing it right.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Forget about Lebron.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
You need to focus on one guy, Luka Doncic, who's
got himself into shape. He's ready to go, He's saying
the right things. Mission accomplished. Now they got to figure
out what the hell are we going to do with
that guy, Lebron James.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
First of all, good morning, buddy, how are you if
you dad? I am doing unbelievable, man. I really am
in a great movie.
Speaker 5 (02:00):
To talk from sports.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
Yes, entertaining all our good friends, as you say, entertain
and educate all the Fox Sports radio fans out there
listen to us on Sunday. Uh yeah, I mean you
know this, listen. I could do the victory lap thing.
I could I kind of feel like I want to,
but it's early, we're just starting. I'll just say this,
kudos to the Lakers forgetting this done.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
I will say this.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
I keep telling you guys, the one guy that's safe
with the new ownership of this team and this franchise
is Rob Polenka. I keep saying this for the last
two and a half months. He's the only safe guy
because all he's done is what he's been asked to do.
When are you ever on a job and you just
(02:42):
simply do, Steve what the ownership asks you to do,
and you are on.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
The hot seat to be fired? What job is that?
Speaker 4 (02:53):
Does the great does the best burger guy in and
out have to risk?
Speaker 5 (02:56):
Think about his job? If he's the best guy and.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
He just does what he's supposed to do making the burgers,
why are you telling people he could go? He might
be fired if they sell this to another franchise. Guy
Shack buys another fifty of these. This guy, no, Bron
Polenka has done his job. You wanted to get rid
of Ingram. They wanted to get rid of of Heart,
They wanted to get rid of Randall. They wanted to
(03:20):
get rid of all these guys. They wanted a d
they wanted Russ. He has made every move they asked ud.
Go get Luca, Go get Luca. Make sure you're locked
down Luca. I locked down Luca. He's the safe guy.
So number one, congrats to him. Number two, Yes, this
means we've been talking about what's next for the guy
who I claim just doesn't matter anymore. This is why
(03:43):
they haven't mentioned him, Steve. I told you guys two
weeks ago, it's just a name now as far as
his mattership to the NBA, Lebron James just does not
matter anymore. His name does, but him, I'm the player,
him the person does not. And that's what he say.
That's why they haven't acknowledged that he's going to pick up,
(04:05):
because they're trying to figure out how to get out
of this wall.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
And it really comes down to this. Now that Luca
firmly has the keys in his hand as well he
should as a twenty six year old player, the next
move for him is going to be simply this. He's
going to ask Lebron to sit down with him. All right, Lebron,
this is what I need from you. This is what
I need from you. Can you deliver that for me?
(04:30):
This is this is a guy, Lebron James, that has
never answered to anybody in his entire life. He has
never had to answer to someone. But he's gonna have
to answer to Luka Doncic, and Luka Doncic is gonna say,
all right, I have made a commitment. Look look at me.
I'm ready to roll here. And this is how I
see your role on my team.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
Are you good with that? Are you good?
Speaker 1 (04:53):
If you're in great, But if you're not good with that,
then we may need to do something else. Now we've
talked about this other little caveat, and that is the
fact that there is no way Lebron James is exiting
the NBA without a.
Speaker 5 (05:10):
Four full farewell tour.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
That is never gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
He's not gonna at the end of the season say
well that was my last one. That is not happening.
So he wants to have a farewell tour.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Well.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Right now, he only has one year on his deal
with the Lakers and it's very unlikely there will be
a second. So he has two months to figure this out.
And by the way, let's say he does say you
know what this is my final season. I want the
farewell tour. Is Mark Walter gonna sign off on that?
Is Luca donc just gonna sign off on that?
Speaker 4 (05:44):
So to you last week, the answer is no, it
will never happen. They won't bankroll it, They're not gonna
roll with it. I'm gonna tell you this. I want
to go back to your comment about Luca pretty much
in my terms, checking Lebron, because that's what it would be.
It is, it would be check. All right, bro, Look
you've had run sure twenty plus years. Yeah, the king,
the chosen one, the goat, whatever, clutch, whatever, But now
(06:08):
it's my it's my team's team. Now. Here's the thing, though,
does Luca got the guts he does to step to Lebron? Like, look, Bron,
you had your run. Because I'm gonna tell you what's
gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
If he's not gonna cater to Lebron, No way, no chance, no, because.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
And it comes out, you know what's gonna happen, TV Radio, clutch,
all the people that are so sold into their careers
of simply the goat debate like that's that's their breadon.
But those people, I promise you, this's just Like I said,
people were gonna turn on Magic, and people are gonna
turn on a D and people are gonna turn on
(06:43):
Russ and Polenka and Jeanie and the Lakers franchise itself
over there love for Lebron. They will then start to
turn against Luca as of who are you?
Speaker 1 (06:54):
They're not gonna do that. You got the flight yesterday.
Polinka spoke volumes yesterday. First of all, I mean he
was he was claiming that Luka Doncic is the greatest
basketball force in the world. He said that yesterday, so
that obviously eliminates Lebron right there. Man, he was thanking
(07:16):
him in front of everybody profusely, thank you for choosing us,
because he did. Thank you for choosing us. He said
it over and over again, thank you for choosing us.
The greatest basketball talent in the world has chosen us,
the humble Los Angeles Lakers, to.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
Be his home.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
So when you're the idea that Luca doesn't have what
it takes when you are a rookie in this league.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
No matter what kind of hype you have.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
And again he's not an American, so we don't really
know what you're getting, you know, we've had a mixed
bag when it comes to players coming from overseas to
play in the NBA. But when you force your will,
as he did immediately with the Dallas Mavericks, I'm.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
The man from the get go.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Okay, everybody step aside, I'm gonna hog the ball. I'm
the dominant force. I mean this is yeah, this is alpha,
alpha alpha, and that is his attitude. So the idea
that he's going to cower to Lebron James or Ben
in any way to accommodate Lebron James, it's not happening.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
He's gonna lay it down.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
He's gonna say, look, you still have a lot of
value that can help me get this franchise to where
we want to get, which is back in the championship.
But this is what I need from you, Lebron. Can
you give me this this season? If you can welcome aboard,
you're my teammate, follow my lead, and we're gonna get
(08:45):
another championship for you. But if you can't do that,
then we're gonna have to figure out an.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
Altern to see it, the way I hear it from
you is would it be okay for me to agree?
In argue that you're saying he's got that in him
right now. Ops. Okay, Okay, I'm saying then I gotta
see it. I'm not saying yeah no, but I gotta
see it. I gotta see if Luca really does have
(09:15):
the the fort two right, the guts to step two.
A guy, as you said, who's never had to answer
to anybody since Saint Vince to Saint Mary's, who's never
had to like follow the real rules and deep rules
and can maneuver and can and can manipulate it. I
gotta see it, and I gotta know that it happened.
(09:35):
It can't be no fluff piece. It can't be no
fliff lamb and fluff. We gotta know that he went
to him, that this was said, I'm asking you for this.
Speaker 5 (09:45):
It's my team.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Now. You got one year and you're out of here.
And guess what I told you last week. We're not
giving you. The Lakers are not giving Lebron James affair
well toward people. It will only happen in Cleveland. No
other team is gonna You're not gonna come to my team.
Cleveland wants to.
Speaker 5 (10:04):
Do it either, No, they do, they will.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
They're trying to get to.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
The end world. But they will.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
But they will though they're not some ulso Ran team
now I know, but they will to sacrifice the season
to accommodate Lebron's farewell.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
To know why. One reason one reason why they.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Will because he won a championship to the raft or.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
Homie, the one you have it is is the fact
the one you have hanging is because of me and
Afro reed.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Okay, So you're gonna ask the three all stars you
have on that team from a year ago to step
aside in favor for one year of Lebron James. We have,
as we mentioned, looking at the landscape of the Eastern
Conference going to the next season, looks like it's the
Calves and the Knicks.
Speaker 5 (10:45):
Those three kids help me hang.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
Okay, and the big shot at the end and the
road answer words.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
Afro Reid, that's my guy. I've spoken on that since
day one.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
And he said he he said he channeled his inner
What he didn't channel he didn't channel his inner Lebron,
he channeled his inner Mamba mentality. And he called Kobe
and say, yo, man, what you told me worked. Come on, people,
you can't make this stuff.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Well, I know this the clock is ticking. We're in August.
This season starts in a couple of months. No, right,
So I mean whatever is going to happen is gonna
happen quick. But the fact that the Lakers got it
done as they should have, doing it the right way.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Take care of Luka Doncic, get him locked up. They
did that.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Lebron Man, Now, Lebron James, you have to listen to
things he's never heard in his entire professional even going back,
as you say, to his high school days having to
answer to somebody else. All right, Well, more on that
a little bit later on. But coming up on the
other side, we got some NFL news, we got a
Hall of Fame game in the books, and overreaction is
(11:51):
a plenty. We'll explain. This is Fox Sports Sunday.

Speaker 1 (13:40):
Of your screen. All right, So we got the Hall
of Fame game. And by the way, before we get
to the Hall of Fame game, I just wanted to
do a shout out. I was watching the speeches yesterday,
the four Hall of Fame speeches. I thought they were
all outstanding. I hate d say even once stood out.
I mean, these were solid well craft. Did you know
(14:01):
from the heart speeches really four very different personalities, you know,
Eric Allen. I mean it is one of my favorite
people on the thing. But I mean the one that
really stood out to me was Sterling Sharp.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
Okay, okay, all right.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
So Sterling Sharp was in an awkward situation with his
brother Shannon because obviously Shannon was his presenter, as Sterling
had been when Shannon got into the Hall of Fame.
These are the first brothers ever inducted in the Pro
Football Hall of Fame.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
And that you know what hit the fan on Shannon in.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
Like two days.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
And by the way, he apparently had requested that this
story not leak out.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
He goes, look, I'm gonna acknowledge it, and I'm not
going to run.
Speaker 4 (14:41):
Away from it, but.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
Can we at least wait until after so that this
story doesn't overrun my brother's big day. And you know
how much Shannon idolizes his older brother. He acknowledged what
we all know, Sterling was a better football player than
Shannon Sharp. I mean, he's one of the great receivers
in the history of.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
The NFL, one of the great players in history.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
But the way that Sterling handled his day despite the
fact that he had to put up with some of
that noise with Shannon, I mean, again, just to really impressed.
I don't know Sterling Sharp, I don't have the same
you know, connection that I have with Eric Allen, but
I was just overly impressed with really the character. The
(15:25):
character is a big part of it. All four of
these guys that were inducted into the Pro Football Hall
of Fame.
Speaker 4 (15:31):
Let me the one, the one thing about Shannon and
Sterling Sharps and this this is the one that almost
like warded my eyes a little bit. When you when
you think about when you have faith in something in life,
and he talked about having faith in God, and Jared
Allen talked about it. I mean, like when you have
faith in something. That story getting leaked after Shannery just
(15:53):
and he probably kindly.
Speaker 5 (15:54):
Looked, guys, could we just.
Speaker 4 (15:57):
Yeah, all right? For them to go know and dump
it out. See, that's the evils of the world.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
And then your faith in God, get your brother up there.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
And not one time that I think about Shannon Sharp
being fire from ESPN, not one time. See. That's that's
when you believe it's something you have strong faith, It
blocks all that out even when people are trying to
take you down. Now, whether I agree, disagree or indifferent
about Shannon Sharp's situation, that didn't matter. What matter was
(16:29):
I'm watching the guy finally get his gold jacket that
I remember playing for the Packers when they were trash.
See this is before Brent farv And and Dorsey Levins
and and and Gilbert the Grave, Diggret d tackle and
that that team, this magic manic Dan Makowski, bro you
know what I'm saying, This is not a good football
And he was the only reason why you turned on
(16:52):
the Packers. And I think that's probably the only time
in the air of the Packers where to one guy
made you watch him. They had the Lombardi days and
Bart Starr and all those guys bad and by the way,
just quickly watched.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Let's remember this. So Brett Farr became quarterback in ninety two.
That year he set the record, Sterling chopped most receptions
the year, broke his own record the following year, year,
the following year eighteen touchdowns, and then the neck injury
ends his career.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
So two years later they win a Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
So you're like, yeah, what kind of numbers the trajectory
of Stirling Sharp's career.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
I'm not gonna say anyone's gonna come close to Jerry.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
He would have been number two, but he would have
been number would have won a Super Bowl also quicker.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
Right, and obviously maybe it would have won that second
one instead of losing to them.
Speaker 4 (17:33):
Absolutely absolutely, if he's on that team they're different football team.
But the speech itself touched me, like I said, got
me a little teary, because I got a brother, Yeah,
and I got a brother that I always wanted to
be good for. My brother r I always wanted to
be good for Terrence. I had dinners in my older brother.
I was the middle brother, but I felt that that
everything you do, like I would literally carry my brother
(17:55):
on my back to his baseball games so he didn't
have to waste his legs so he had him to play.
These are real things I did as an older brother.
I'm like thirteen years old doing stuff like this for
my seven year old brother. So when Sterling spoke like that,
and it spoke about his faith, which I've always been
taught by the men of my family that raised me,
that was the part of the speech that made me
(18:16):
forget about all the crap that the negative energies and
the enemies of the world will try to rain down
on you, but if you keep your faith, nothing can
stop you. No weapon formed against you shall prosper. And
that from Sterling. I'm AMA's getting emotional talked about it now.
I tear it up watching that speech yesterday, Like that's
what it's about and then to take off his gold
(18:38):
jacket and give it to his brother. See, that's the
ultimate of kindness and forgiveness and loving the world that
we're just missing, especially in sports where athletes are taught
a lot, you know, make it about you. There's very
few that see that. It's not even about you. You've
been given his talent to entertain and pass on to
the or it's like what we do, what we do.
A lot of times, I'm sure we can get caught
(18:59):
up in how how good we think we are, and
how good our debates and our comebacks and our little
lines and our jokes and our personality. But at the
end of the day, you're not doing this for you.
We're doing it, as you say, to entertain and educate.
Like we're giving to people without any expectation of return.
And that's what Sterling Sharp did. And that right there,
my man, that might have been the greatest Hall of
(19:21):
Fame speech that I've ever seen.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
It was not only an amazing day in terms of
all the speeches, but it was also a lot of
fun to see Marv Levy celebrate his one hundred birthday.
Was actually yesterday, we actually it's today o mar So Today,
Marv Levy is a Happy birthday to Marv Levy today,
Happy birthday. He was born on August third, Beat my
(19:45):
Dolphins Alive, nineteen twenty five. He turns one hundred years
of age.
Speaker 4 (19:50):
They showed him.
Speaker 1 (19:50):
He was sitting there with all the other Hall of famers.
He looks completely with it. I mean, the man looks
absolutely amazing. But it was great for them to be
able to knowledge mar being in attendance with his gold
jacket on uh turning one hundred years of age.
Speaker 4 (20:06):
So it was a it was a great day in Cannon.
Really quick question about Gates, Yes, that was D two.
His his speech was great too. And I want to
throw something that you can. I don't think we've talked
about this, but for some reason I have a feeling
we're going to be on the opposite sides of this.
Is Philip Rivers a Hall of Famer.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
Okay, we'll get into that, Okay in fag and fact.
See how work?
Speaker 1 (20:28):
Okay, talking, so I always have it in reserve. Understand
we we just sort of flow through a show. That's
how we do it. We don't have to have any
we don't pre determined direction.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
We don't. We don't ever read that.
Speaker 1 (20:42):
Things happen over the course, so the show takes on
its own life. But what I do want to talk
about some of the guys next. Now that we got
the class at twenty twenty five in place, we're gonna
look ahead. And yes, Philip Rivers is one of the
names that'll be on the ballot for the first time.
It's actually a pretty loaded list. Oh it's the first
that's just first ballot guy. So we'll get to that
a little bit later on. I do want to get
(21:03):
to him. We'll carry it over on the other side
the game itself. Okay, So, by the way, I want
to ask you this, how do you feel about Chris Collinsworth?
Speaker 4 (21:14):
You know what? And I'm gonna be honest with you.
I don't understand how so many people I don't know.
I'm just I hear the guy talking football. He doesn't
bother me as much as I hear he bothers everybody.
Speaker 9 (21:27):
Up.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
I'm with you. I like, is he the best of
all time? Not even close? But I mean, I.
Speaker 1 (21:32):
Don't think he really creates that much waves. I mean,
it just seems like there are people the second he
opens his mouth.
Speaker 4 (21:39):
Oh, yeah, I just I don't know, man, there's some
people I think that are just horrific at it. I
want to throw their names out. But Chris Collinsworth isn't
one of them. But he's also not, like you say,
he's not one of the best. Like I think Joel
Klatt's a better color guy than him. Yeah, I mean
there's a number of guys, right, you know.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
Well, Like the funny thing is like Kirk herbs Free
doing college.
Speaker 3 (22:01):
Is good, it's great.
Speaker 1 (22:02):
He has no chemistry without Michaels, have any connection to
the NFL exactly.
Speaker 4 (22:07):
That's so.
Speaker 1 (22:08):
And so they put him in a job that he
was not the right guy for. When he's working with
Chris Fowler in college football, I'm in, I'm they're in
saying it works great him on game that sure, absolutely
him of course perfect. So again right place, right time,
All right, that being said, all right, on the other side,
I want to get to because Trey Lance people, people
(22:32):
are actually talking Trey Lance for the first time since
well forever. Uh and is it is it realistic to
even be talking about Trey Lance in any kind of
future in the NFL. But before we get to that,
let's find out what is trending right now. And Moncey,
we know that you are a Charger fan.
Speaker 10 (22:54):
Yeah, yes, and a new Justin Herbert shirt.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
I'm surprised Joe Lance shirt.
Speaker 4 (23:01):
You know not.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
I probably won't, Yes, probably won't. Here's the one thing I.
Speaker 4 (23:07):
Will say, and we'll get into a little more depth.
Speaker 1 (23:09):
The one thing that I did take away from Trey
Lance in this game was he seemed under control. You know,
it seems like again things that slowed down for him.
Don't run when you don't have to run, Just take
your time, look for a receiver thorough open and get
the ball to them. And so at the very least,
(23:29):
he checked that box totally.
Speaker 10 (23:31):
And then also compared to the other backup quarterbacks for Detroit,
he really stood out. And I know it's it's backups
and I not, but I agree with you. I thought
he looked also like happy.
Speaker 4 (23:42):
To be playing football.
Speaker 3 (23:45):
Yeah, yeah, you know, I I don't know what I know.
Speaker 10 (23:48):
It's it's almost too simple to say. I feel like,
just bad luck, bad luck? What has happened?
Speaker 1 (23:53):
Harbar Is you can't overstand. Jim Harbaugh makes the game fun.
You know you saw it before the game. He's hitting
you know how he likes to hit his players. He
hit it like coming on, was like get in it. Look,
let's go, let's have some fun.
Speaker 4 (24:08):
Let's do this Jim Harball effect. And remember last year, Montie,
the big word on Justin Herbert was what he looked
a lot more calm last year, exact, a lot more
have it? What turning the ball over had one of
the best touchdown in interception ratios up till like week
sixteen seventeen. And like you said, I'm watching, I saw
the statist said, Man, he just looks really calm out there.
(24:28):
I don't care who he's going against. Football.
Speaker 1 (24:32):
It's a game have fun. When you're having fun, you
will execute better.
Speaker 10 (24:37):
Yes, yeah, So other NFL news will start in Buffalo,
where Bill's head coach Sean McDermott told reporters that wide
receiver Khalil Shakir is week to week with an ankle sprain.
He goes wide receiver AJ Brown is dealing with a
hamstring injury. When it comes to Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford,
who hasn't practiced because of his back soreness, well, they're
supposed to have a joint practice with the Cowboys, and
(24:58):
Sean McVay already said he is not going to part
to his that They also have a joint practice coming
up with the Chargers that is still tbd whether Matthew
Stafford is going to be able to participate in that
or not. We'll move on to baseball, where the Dodgers
have a two zero lead over the Rays. Bottom of
the eighth inning, Anti Pa has Freddy Freeman with a
couple of RBI singles. The Brewers did place their rookie
All Star pitcher Jacob Mazarowski today on the fifteen day
(25:20):
il with the left tibia contusion, and right now the
Brewers are on top of the Nationals three zero, bottom
of the fourth inning. Blue Jay's on the scoreboard first
against the Royals one zero, top of the fourth. The
Twins have a forty two lead over the Guardians bottom
of the third. The Marlins, who like to beat teams
that are good and they're not.
Speaker 4 (25:38):
We've talked about this last time, right.
Speaker 10 (25:39):
Like the Marlins only beat good teams, are right now
on top of the Yankees three to one.
Speaker 4 (25:44):
Bottom of the third inning.
Speaker 10 (25:46):
Raphael Devers has hit a three run shot and the
Giants of taking the lead from the Mets for to
one bottom of the third, Cubs on top of the
Orioles one zero bottom of the first.
Speaker 1 (25:56):
Back to you, guys, I'm telling you right now, as
far as Major League Baseball the last couple of months, yeah,
it is wide open.
Speaker 10 (26:03):
It is.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
I mean, there's just no dominant teams this year, isn't.
There's just a lot of teams that are in the mix.
Speaker 4 (26:11):
And I still will put you, guys, is I think
the Dodge totally.
Speaker 3 (26:14):
But I don't think people are scared of the Dodgers.
Speaker 4 (26:17):
You don't have to be scared of them and get your
ass at home.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
Well you're not gonna be.
Speaker 10 (26:20):
But I think at one point there was a bit
of fear and that has gone away. And I think
it's started that way. Not that you're supposed to do,
but I agree with you guys.
Speaker 5 (26:30):
The league it's really even and out of cross.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
Like nobody we're scared of anybody, right you know, you.
Speaker 4 (26:35):
Look at what Blue Jays are doing right look at
what Toronto's on right.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
So right now, right now, overall, the Brewers have the
best record in baseball, two games ahead of the Cubs,
the Jays, the Tigers two and a half ahead of
the Dodgers, three and a half of the Mets. This
is overall, not just one league. We all bunched together.
So two months is an eternity in baseball.
Speaker 3 (26:56):
A lot can happen. Who gets hot?
Speaker 4 (26:59):
Interesting run? Yeah, if you're a baseball person, you on
likee preseason football? Okay? Cool, you got some baseball to
watch in August and September to get you go with
the football season.
Speaker 1 (27:08):
Starts, no question. All right, Monsne, thank you. We'll talk
to you a little bit later on once again Hartvin
Husky here, Fox Sports A radio studios. That's what we're
hanging out on this big Sunday, all right. So getting
back to the Hall of Fame game in Trey Lance.
You know, the Trey Lance story was a warning. It
really is what it turned out to be. You fall
(27:29):
in love with talent and you ignore the idea that
this guy started a total of fifteen games at the
collegiate level, and that was at the FCS level. Where
as we all know, North Dakota State is sort of
an FBS school massqurading as an FCS school as they
have dominated that division for years. So week in and
week out, they're playing against overmatched opponents. Which has elevated
(27:52):
the stats of many of their players, most notably their quarterbacks.
But that being said, the forty nine Ers obviously saw
something that they thought would convert into talent that would
carry him to the higher level in the NFL. And
talking to people that were there covering the forty nine ers,
like I would say, what happened?
Speaker 3 (28:12):
What happened here, right, Jimmy Garoppolo.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
Remember they re signed Garoppolo when it looked like he
was out the door, sort of as a insurance backup.
And meanwhile, this rock party kid who started four years
at Iowa State, he had a much better understanding of
how to execute the offense, which Kyle Shanahan demands. What
I'm asking to do is execute what we're asking you
to do. And quickly they realized that that was not
(28:35):
going to be Trey Lance. But it's the perfect situation
for him now. The Chargers, obviously they are not looking
for a starting quarterback, but they're certainly looking for a
capable backup. Ironically, their last backup, also out of North
Dakota State, Eastern Stick, was not that. So I was
happy to see Trey Lance at least get an opportunity
(28:55):
to show on the field. That, Okay, I can play
this position, I can reel it back, I can have
some fun, and I can be a valuable team member.
So that was that was But I don't want to
overplay it, considering the guys he's going against on the
other side are gonna be working mostly at the local
home depot or Walmart in a couple of weeks when
they get released. So he wasn't playing against anybody. It
(29:18):
wasn't about that. It was about getting him on the
field and having some fun.
Speaker 4 (29:21):
Again, I'm gonna go a different route and I'm gonna
do something that people are probably gonna shake their head out,
but I'm gonna make some people think on this one.
This is Shanahan's fault. Okay. Shanahan for some reason has
been touted as this quarterback whisper. Okay, but why, like
why when you got Matt Ryan, Matt Ryan was already
(29:42):
a top draft pick. You you weren't there for you
came in. Matt Ryan was already Matt Ryan.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
But he had an MVP year that year.
Speaker 4 (29:49):
That okay, I mean that v By the way, if
you look.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
At Matt Ryan's urn, that one year is so out
of whack with everything else.
Speaker 4 (29:55):
Yeah, yeah, but I'm not giving that to Shanahan.
Speaker 5 (29:58):
He's he's calling plays.
Speaker 4 (29:59):
But Ryan's also thrown to a guy by the name
who was in his the dead center of his prime,
Julio Joneses. So yeah, I got a play caller, okay,
But I'm also still gonna be a Hall of Fame
quarterback and I might be throwing to a Hall of
Fame receiver. Okay. So and we're gonna do that whether
he's here calling the plays of the booths or not.
We're both still gonna have a god jacket one day.
So there's that. So then against the San Francisco, well,
(30:21):
he couldn't really save Garoppolo and Brock. Now we can
blame the injuries, and we could give a whole bunch
of narratives about why sophomore slump happened last year. Happens injuries.
He's been banged up a little bit, but for some reason,
we don't put the injury tag on him like we
do Tua and like we do Joe Burrow, who have
been banged up and been knocked out. But he's also
(30:42):
been hurt too. They waited to give him this deal
that he now has they didn't just throw it at
him right when it was available. There was still kind
of a question mark there. So to me, there's still
a question mark on brock Party. To be honest with you,
but you, for some reason you give Trey Lance. Well,
like we just said during the break to Jim Harbaugh,
and I don't care who it was against. We already
knew what the Hall of Fame game was gonna be
(31:03):
because if he went out he played like trash, we
would be killing him and say he couldn't even do
it against guys that's gonna be highlighting receipts at Costco
in two weeks, right, But he went out, Like you said,
body language says a lot in football.
Speaker 5 (31:18):
I always talk about this even when I coach my kids.
Speaker 4 (31:22):
Your body language and your comfort level will tell me
what type of preparation you've been doing, because when you
prepare correctly because you have the right coaching around you.
We've been saying this for years about quarterbacks. Sometimes Jeff
George can throw it through the side of a bar.
Speaker 3 (31:37):
I mean, that's a legendary story.
Speaker 1 (31:40):
You have a guy that was an underachiever at the
collegiate level and then he showed up at the combine
and people are like, ho, holy right.
Speaker 4 (31:47):
Because and if you get a guy in the right
system with the right coach, we always trying to use
that as a knock Like for Brady Well, he had
Belichick and he had McDaniels on this year.
Speaker 5 (31:58):
Okay, that's what it takes.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
Can we say the same about Montana who had Seaffert
and had I'm sorry, I'm in a Bill Walsh. Should
we say that about him too? Like, come on, we
can't do this. It takes a team to win and
be good. But it starts with the head dude. That's
quarter quarterback in the quarterback and that's normally the offensive
cordionate or the head coach. And maybe Shanahan just might
not be the quarterback. Whispered that we teut to him,
(32:21):
But we keep questioning Jim Harbor. Harbwall's got a kid
up in Minnesota camp right now, looking pretty damn good.
Here's one of his kids.
Speaker 5 (32:30):
Get his kids looking pretty?
Speaker 1 (32:31):
Did I not tell you that the JJ McCarthy reference
is going to be a constant chamber moving Look, I'm
I like JJ McCarthy. Here's the thing about Jim Harbaugh
and It's always been true, even when he had Andrew Locke. Right,
we are a run first team. Absolutely, we are dominating
the line of scrimmage. So as a quarterback, you will
(32:52):
play within the parameters of the offense. This has been
true throughout Harbor's entire coaching career, and so you know,
and then think about J. J. McCarthy ad Michigan was
this when he had to deliver. He delivered when he
had to When we need you to make plays, he
was able to make play.
Speaker 5 (33:13):
That's my reference to Rob Blake.
Speaker 4 (33:14):
Do the job I hatch you to do. How do
you get knocked for that, for doing and being successful
at it? Hey do it this way and you're successful
at it, and people go, oh, well, he's only doing
it the way he's asked.
Speaker 5 (33:28):
What come on?
Speaker 2 (33:29):
Man?
Speaker 5 (33:29):
But with with Lance once again, I just think he's
with the right guy.
Speaker 4 (33:33):
Now. I think he'll beat a backup there. I think
he'll be back because he's gonna get more of preseason
snaps like I'm surprised he played the whole game. Well
Oujung La Lake he did come in. Oh yes, right,
oh that's what DJ did. By then I think I
once I knew I lost over under bet U. Once
I knew I lost that it was barely, But what
do you mean barely? It was thirty two and a half.
Speaker 1 (33:52):
The finished with forty one thirty four to seven final score.
Speaker 4 (33:56):
Oh yeah, I stopped at thirty lover. Yes, I wanted.
Speaker 1 (34:02):
By the way, sorry, I sent a basket of flowers
thanking Trey Lance for his performance.
Speaker 4 (34:08):
I'm scoring. I'm like Trey, I'm pulling for you, but
I don't want to have to hear this on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (34:12):
Bro, Well, hold down, all right, I'm just gonna hold
you off. It's gonna I'm gonna tease you throughout the year.
You'll think you're drawing me in and then.
Speaker 4 (34:19):
I'm a little distance.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
Bhi coming, I'm on this side. We'll go back to
Hall of Fame Class of twenty twenty six. Names are
gonna be appearing on a list that are eligible for
the Hall of Fame. Which one are in? Which ones
will have to wait? Which ones will never get there?
Never get there? Hell up, this is Fox Sports Sunday.
Speaker 4 (34:41):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 1 (34:45):
Harbin and Husky Fox Sports Sunday. We're in the Fox
Sports Radio studios.
Speaker 4 (34:51):
I'm like.
Speaker 3 (34:55):
Other sports.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
When you're talking about the Pro Football Hall of Fame,
deciding on players is a challenge from this respect. In baseball,
you're basically a hitter or a pitcher, right. You got
hitting stats, you got pitching stats. That's pretty cut and dry.
Occasionally get an Aussie Smith or some dominant defensive player
(35:21):
that gets under consideration. Basketball, you're either a score, you're
distributor you're rebounder.
Speaker 3 (35:27):
Maybe a defender.
Speaker 4 (35:29):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
But in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, you're all
over the map. You got quarterbacks, you got running backs,
you got wide receivers, he got tight ends, you got
offensive lineman, defensive lineman, linebackers, defensive backs, return guys, kickers, punters,
and you have to decide ab out of all of that,
three or four names are gonna get in each year
(35:51):
for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. There is a
logjam of qualified candidates that may never get in. We're
gonna have to wait a long long time. So that
being said, I'm going to give you right now, VJ,
five players that will be first year eligibles this season.
(36:12):
These are five guys that are going to be first
year eligibles. I'll just say the names and you can
comment on who you want to talk about. They are
Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Jason Witten, Frank Gore, and Philip Rivers.
Speaker 3 (36:32):
Those are just five.
Speaker 4 (36:34):
By the way.
Speaker 1 (36:35):
Keep in mind, Frank car is the third all time
leading rusher in the history of the NFL. Jason Wittnes
is an eleven time Pro Bowl tight end, Philip Rivers
sixth all time in both yardage and passing touchdowns at
eight time Pro Bowl or quarterback. Larry Fitzgerald was on
the NFL one hundred team, and Drew Brees obviously have
(36:55):
one of the most legendary careers of any quarterback.
Speaker 3 (36:58):
That's five, guys.
Speaker 1 (36:59):
Understand the all five cannot be first ballot Hall of Famers.
Speaker 3 (37:02):
At most two will be because our carryover guys.
Speaker 1 (37:05):
I'll talk about it in a moment, but when I
say those five names, give me some reaction.
Speaker 4 (37:11):
Ah Man, Gore, witt are gonna xil. Witton won't get
it in the first ballot. He won't get in the
first ballot because if the all time touchdown receiver the
tight end position, Antonio Gates, if he couldn't get in
on the first ballot, then wit and better not get
in on the first ballot, so I got him out.
Larry fits the numbers in the name says first ballot,
(37:35):
but I could see him being second or third, because
we've seen this happen to receivers before that put up tremendous,
tremendous type numbers and don't get in on the first ballot.
You know, I think Breeze because he's a quarterback, and
because it's the glorious position, and because of his story
from San Diego to separated shoulder, Dolphins don't want him
(37:57):
take a chance on him. They don't trust the shoulder.
He moves on to New Orleans, Katrina, the block, pun
on Monday Night Football, the super Bowl, the just everything
it encompassed, I think plays into it. I think a
lot of this, like everything in life is, has an
element of human human side to it. You know, Like
(38:19):
I say this about referees and officials, like you can't
tell me they take all their human element out of
call in a foul. Doesn't mean they use it every time,
but you can't tell me it's never there. And I
think that's there with the voting too. I just think,
you know, you also talk about a guy who I
believe is number two and passing completions, yes, he's also
I believe number two or three in yards to and
(38:41):
touch that like, he's top two or three and.
Speaker 1 (38:43):
Ventually broke all the records that were then broken by
Tom Brady.
Speaker 4 (38:46):
Right, So I think he would be the only one
that is guaranteed in next year. It wouldn't surprise me though,
if Larry Fitz gets slit in. But I don't think
they're gonna put Goring inrunning back. I know he's the
number three all time rusher, but they seen the move
slow running backs was the last time at running back
(39:07):
where it was consistent.
Speaker 1 (39:08):
I know the Danny LT was a first ballot guy,
but frankcre is not Lt exactly exactly.
Speaker 4 (39:14):
They're not the same. They're not the same, So.
Speaker 1 (39:16):
That's always the argument of a compiler. Frankcre has one
of my favorite stats. He played sixteen years in the NFL,
which is an insane number for any running back, and
finished his career with exactly sixteen thousand yards, not sixteen
thousand and one, sixteen thousand on the dot in sixteen years.
I'm with you on this. I think Breeze and fifth
sher will be the two first ballot guys, but also
(39:37):
keep in mind carry overs. So from last year, two
guys that I thought had an excellent chance to be
first ballot guys that did not get first ballot were
Annam Vinatieri, the all time leading scorer and one of
the greatest clutch kickers in the history of the NFL,
and Luke Keigley, who was a dominant player in a
relatively short career. Then you have the log jam at
(40:00):
wide receiver, so still sitting out there, and they were
a finalist a year ago. You got Tory Holt, you
got Reggie Wayne, you got Steve Smith, and with Larry
Fitzgerald on the ballot this year, Hines Wards never even
made it to the finalist list. The guy was a
Super Bowl MVP. You also have Terrell Suggs who was
a finalist. And then of course you're going to have
(40:21):
guys like Willie Anderson, a great offensive tackle, Jari Evans.
Speaker 3 (40:25):
How many Pro Bowls did he have? I mean guard?
These are guys that are qualified resumes.
Speaker 1 (40:30):
And then of course he got Eli Manning who didn't
make it a year ago, right.
Speaker 4 (40:35):
I like Holtson, Holtson, Wayne's a question mark. Suggs few
more years, Keithley, few more years, Vinitary, a few more years.
Speaker 5 (40:41):
They're not getting those guys in.
Speaker 1 (40:42):
I'll say, all right, so let me ask you this,
who gets in first? Philip Rivers or Eli Manning? Same draft?
Who would you vote for? If you had to choose
one to go in first as a Hall of Famer?
You would choose Philip Rivers or Eli Manning.
Speaker 4 (40:55):
That's crazy. That's hard for me because I pomp pom
for both these guys to be Hall of Famers along
with Matthews.
Speaker 3 (41:00):
I mean, let's play it this way.
Speaker 1 (41:01):
Rivers has more Pro Bowls, better numbers, exactly, Philip Rivers, Philip.
Speaker 4 (41:09):
Rivers, Philip Rivers. Right, Philip Rivers?
Speaker 3 (41:12):
Were you sold yesterday by Antonio Gates?
Speaker 4 (41:14):
Yeah? He sold you a little bit on that one there.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
All right, we got a lot more NFL news to
get to, all the latest in the camps.
Speaker 3 (41:21):
This is Fox Sports Sunday, all.
Speaker 1 (41:23):
Right, rolling along here on another fully loaded sports Sunday.
This is Fox Sports Sunday, and we are in the
Fox Sports Radio studios. Coming up on our next hour,
John Paul Morosi is going to be joining us, talking
them out. What's going on in Major League baseball, man,
because right now we have got it is a log.
Speaker 3 (41:40):
Jam of teams in Major League Baseball. I mean to
give you an idea. We're talking about the Yankees earlier.
Speaker 1 (41:45):
Right now, the Yankees have the eleventh best record in
Major League Baseball. But they're not out of it. That's
that's the whole thing. By the way, he speaking of
baseball for a moment here, the trade deadline, you know,
was one of those They had a lot of trades,
big names, nothing that really moved at all.
Speaker 4 (42:03):
Nothing And some of the guys that showed up showed
up and got Shell. Did you see that exactly so?
And listen, and as Monty said on her break last hour,
it is it's just a new era right now during
this season where you got two big names. Let's get real.
(42:24):
You got show Hey and you got Judge. It's not
to say you don't have other name, you know, Manamy
Chaddle is a name, but he doesn't move the needle.
Two guys moved the needle. Guess what. One guy's out
right now. So with him out and the Yankees are
kind of just falling into the wild card When they
jumped out as one of the top teams in the league,
(42:44):
and you said, who has the best record? To make
the Brewers if.
Speaker 3 (42:47):
You Milwaukee Brewers.
Speaker 4 (42:48):
If you ask that question in sports bars this afternoon,
I guarantee you make a hundred bucks if you ask
that question the guys in sports bars is what I
look it up.
Speaker 5 (42:56):
But who's got the best record Major League Baseball?
Speaker 4 (42:58):
Right now? You're not many people are gonna say the
Milwaukee Brewers do. But do you can you name me
five Brewers? You know?
Speaker 6 (43:06):
Can?
Speaker 4 (43:06):
Most people know? So it's it's just one of those
things right now. And I actually remember acts JP this
like a month ago. I said, dude, what else do
we have? And this is leading into the All Star Break,
right because we're trying to get excited about the All
Star Break and home run Derby and we get there
and then the game ends the way it ends right
like it just baseball just continues to keep tripping up
(43:27):
over itself, and when you bring it up, you're just
baseball hater. But it's like, no, I'm looking at the league,
bro like no one wants to take the reins. That's
why I say the Dodgers is probably still the favorite
to win it.
Speaker 1 (43:36):
Well, they're gonna have to get a few things. Actually,
they got lucky because after four months off, Blake Snell
came back, pitched well, gave up a couple of home runs.
He did continuous streak though that has been unbroken in
the history of baseball. No pitcher has ever won a
baseball game that I know of, in which his team
(43:56):
scored zero runs. Okay, so if your team scored zero,
that streak is still alive. No pitchers ever won a
game in which his team has scored zero runs. One
thing that could become a story is cal Rawley. Obviously,
he's at forty two home runs. I mean, if this
guy makes a run at sixty home runs as a catcher,
even playing for the Mariners, that will get into the
news a little bit. But you're right, I meantill it's
(44:20):
a league with two major stars, Aaron Judge, Show, Hey Otani,
and then everyone else is just there, all right. So
I want to get to what's going on in pro
football right now. We're heading into these preseason games, and
the one thing about the Hall of Fame game that
was a reminder to all is that there is less
stock putting into these preseason games.
Speaker 3 (44:42):
Than ever before.
Speaker 1 (44:43):
I mean, you literally are parading out players that will
never see the light of day. You're not going to
risk injury of any frontline player. So what is the
purpose of playing these preseason games. It doesn't make any sense.
I've talked about this time and time again again. If
you were to sit down and sit with coaches general
(45:03):
managers that really want to evaluate their own talent, perst
of all, the evaluation process is done in camp. That's
where they make decisions on a few jobs that might
be relevant. Think about this. You have what is an
NFL roster these days? What are we talking about? We're
talking about fifty.
Speaker 3 (45:19):
Fifty three, fifty three, fifty three guys fifty three. How
many roster spots are actually up for grabs?
Speaker 1 (45:27):
The reality is maybe not even maybe for teams that
are really trying to rebuild. But if you are basically
a middle road to an upper tier team, at most,
you have maybe four or five where you have to
make any kind of decision.
Speaker 3 (45:42):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (45:43):
I know.
Speaker 3 (45:43):
I've been around these camps and the ultimate decision.
Speaker 1 (45:47):
I've asked this time and time again, and I worked
for an organization, so I saw it firsthand.
Speaker 4 (45:52):
How many don't tell you any nice? All right? Thank
you very much. Yes, I did.
Speaker 1 (45:57):
I know I'm trying to get away from saying that,
but the reason I the reason I bring it up
is that I have seen it firsthand, like what goes down,
and I know it was forty years ago, but nothing
has changed from that respect. The bottom line is, these
decisions are made what they see day in and day
out in practice. That's where they're going to decide. Where
(46:17):
they can see these guys head to head. I'm going
to take this guy over this guy, or there might
be interest in this guy where I can get something
for him, which is why we're going to move him
out to make room for that.
Speaker 3 (46:27):
That's where they did.
Speaker 1 (46:28):
No decisions none, none, none, none are based on somebody's
unbelievable performance in a preseason game. Zero You could watch
that and say, wow, man, that guy's got to make
the team. If he does make the team, I promise
you it wasn't because they had a great preseason game.
It's something that's been seen day in and day out
in practice. That's the way it operates. What they should do,
(46:51):
what they have done, and what they have believe will
do in the future. And I think you and I
are in lockstep with this because we know that the
expansion of the NFL is coming up. Are these trolled
scrimmages where teams can go up against another team saying
we would like to work on ABC, the other team
says we like to work on one, two, three. Let's
help each other here. We're working on something specific for
(47:12):
certain and that is far more beneficial to these teams.
And trying again the preseasons about what trying to evaluate
talent and putting your roster together for the upcoming season.
Speaker 4 (47:26):
That's the only purpose of the preseason. I love these
control practices where teams come in and they pretty much
scrimmage for two or three days, then go play the
preseason game, because if I was a coach, what I
would do is like you said, even in high school,
when we have teams come in and we scrimmage, we
day tell we do the exact same thing. Hey, listen,
we want to work on this, this and this, but
(47:47):
you you do you, But for these other plays? Can
I get a three four?
Speaker 3 (47:50):
Look?
Speaker 4 (47:51):
Hey, buddy, can you give me a can you give
me a nickel?
Speaker 1 (47:53):
Give me remind me again, how many preseason games do
you have in high school?
Speaker 4 (47:57):
Zero? How many of you have in college.
Speaker 5 (47:59):
Zero zero zero.
Speaker 4 (48:01):
This is while we drive an hour to go scrimmage
a team that we don't know nothing about and they
don't know nothing about us. This is why we drive
all the way.
Speaker 3 (48:12):
To Ventura and a handshake with the other coach.
Speaker 4 (48:15):
Absolutely want to listen. We sit there, we stand together.
We don't stand on opposite sidelines. We stand behind the
offense and defense, and we going, Hey, ten plays, you
guys run with. What do you want from us? You
want to nickel, No problem, Hey guys, all right, let's
go to our base nickel. Any blitz is what you
want to blitz. All right, let's go to nickel buzz.
Give me a ram blitz. Let's go nickel defense ram blitz.
Speaker 5 (48:35):
And let go.
Speaker 4 (48:36):
But give them a look so and then hey, in
return on any these ten plays we want to work on.
Speaker 1 (48:41):
This is why, with very few exceptions, there is such
a mutual admiration amongst coaches.
Speaker 3 (48:47):
Absolutely because absolutely you're doing is what I'm doing.
Speaker 5 (48:51):
Coaches don't dislike each other.
Speaker 4 (48:52):
Guys like we.
Speaker 1 (48:54):
People don't understand unless you are a coach, Yes, you
don't understand.
Speaker 3 (48:59):
And that's why you look across to the other side.
Speaker 4 (49:01):
You shake their hands absolute.
Speaker 1 (49:04):
Y'all played us today, Yeah, played you today, whatever, but
you know you worked your ass off to get ready
for this game.
Speaker 3 (49:10):
Same thing for me. And there's that mutual.
Speaker 4 (49:12):
Block class lose with classes. How to always tell my
kids win with class, lose with class and coaching. You're
in this to help each other get better because you're
gonna go your own separate ways. You guys, if you
meet up in the Super Bowl, fine, when the Falcons
come in to always practice against the Dolphins, they don't
never really play each other unless we're playing the NFC
South that year. As your off NFC division rotates through
(49:36):
four different divisions, so you're only gonna play this team
once every four years. If you guys don't meet in
the Super Bowl. In the NFL schedule makers want to
put a Super Bowl rematch together, right, so you can
show each other a lot and have that mutual respect
between a Mike McDaniel and the Raheem Morris and the
entire coaching staff. And these coaches they change teams so
(49:56):
many years. You come back around to a guy you
might to coach with four years ago, and now he's
the linebackers coach on this team. That you're going to
scrimmage and you're not an offensive line coach of the
interior line coach on this team, and you guys know
each other anyway. But that's why preseason, like I told you,
I would eliminate preseason. I would let the teams start
training camp the first Monday after July fourth, give everybody
(50:21):
a full two months to get ready for this season,
and have these inn these inner scrimmage control type scrimmages.
And then if you want the fans to watch, get
what you can do. Set a camera on top of
like they do now they kind of stream still start
this stuff. I mean, if you want to watch it.
Speaker 1 (50:38):
It is insidious that they still charge full priced tickets.
Speaker 3 (50:42):
Yeah, for a preseason game.
Speaker 1 (50:43):
And if you're a season ticket, hold of your saddle
pain for those tickets.
Speaker 4 (50:48):
You're stuck. If you're a season take aholder preseason package
yet comes with it.
Speaker 1 (50:52):
Two more games just got added to your package at
full price.
Speaker 4 (50:55):
Yeah, So that's why it's and and also too, you
got a lot of guys out here playing hard. This
is something Collinsworth did say the other night doing the
Hall of Fame, and he made a lot of sense.
There are a lot of guys out here that don't
know if they're getting if they have to turn their
playbook in tomorrow. Oh yeah, so they're out here going,
you know what, to the wall. But then when you're
playing that hard this early, this is that's where serious injury, okay,
(51:19):
can also occur to a main guy or guy you're
gonna need for a guy who doesn't know if he's
got to turn his playbook in the next day.
Speaker 1 (51:27):
I will say this about one benefit of appearing in
a preseason game. Even though your performance in that game
has no bearing on the team you're playing for, somebody
else might see it, see that.
Speaker 4 (51:41):
That well, they do it.
Speaker 3 (51:46):
But back in the day a little bit more.
Speaker 4 (51:49):
They were watching already are your ears?
Speaker 3 (51:53):
How most deals work in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (51:55):
We always talk about the NFL draft that everybody has
their board, right, so when they have a guy on
a board that ends up with another team, that doesn't
mean they forgot about the guyers And so if that
guy underperforms or is released, it's like, Okay, we haven't
changed where we thought this guy was going to be,
and so we may pick him up.
Speaker 4 (52:16):
I can, I can work with them. You couldn't. That's it. Yeah,
that's why I say missed on him.
Speaker 5 (52:21):
Will that make Oh, oh, you're putting out tape?
Speaker 4 (52:24):
Yeah, but if what I haven't done, you just made
the point that there's about four or five spots that
actually really get inside it. Okay, So then the other
forty seven spots are already set, which means this tape
that he's putting out there don't matter if he gets cut,
because you already had it decided you were cutting this
guy anyway. And if that tape spearheaded one of the
(52:45):
other thirty one teams, you didn't do your offseason work
because you already knew about this guy. If one piece
of preseason tape was gonna change your mind about him,
you didn't do your job, all right.
Speaker 1 (52:55):
This show is about a lot of things. Amongst other things, competition.
Speaker 4 (53:01):
Would you like to change the rules too?
Speaker 1 (53:03):
I've been trying, and I will only change the rules
if I'm trailing, not yet. If I start trailing, yes,
I will do everything in my power to change the
rules to try to benefit me and me alone. Coming up, well,
of course, it is one of the most talked about
subject matters of all time. What is next with the
perfect Picks? This is Fox Sports Sunday, Harvin Husky, Fox
(53:28):
Sports Sunday. We're in the Fox Sports Radio studios. All right,
once again, it is that time here. We are precise, profitable,
over under a half of flagrant.
Speaker 6 (53:45):
Are your perfect picks?
Speaker 11 (53:46):
Welcome into the perfect Picks where every day is perfect
and perfet And we're just going to jump right into
it because we've got a little bit of movement on
the on the leaderboard here. Unfortunately, I've got you guys
in a habit of taking the same side. I'm going
to beat that out of you before too long. Uh
real quick to get everything back together.
Speaker 3 (54:06):
Again, Can I make a quick suggestion?
Speaker 4 (54:08):
What are you doing? What are you doing?
Speaker 1 (54:09):
So if there is something again, I'm not going to
throw away a point.
Speaker 3 (54:14):
There's too much competition here, No.
Speaker 1 (54:15):
I understand. This is why I would say this. I
would say this, you need to have a backup question.
In other words, in case of us both picking the
same side, which I have done before, right, yeah, exactly,
so you might have a backup so that there's at
least two or three The.
Speaker 3 (54:34):
Book takes responsibility of this. We just got to get
this time. Look at it.
Speaker 1 (54:37):
I'm trying to dictate the rules here, are you okay?
Speaker 4 (54:39):
No, no, no, I'm totally okay with it. I want
to add to it, though, Chris, You've been doing radio
with both of us long enough to know on certain
topics where probably one of us is gonna lean or
not lean into more of those questions. Fine over under
that surrounds something like that. Well, and you've been working
with both of us, and there's a lot that we agree,
(55:00):
but I'm sure there's a lot we go.
Speaker 11 (55:01):
Well, geez here, I am trying to like just offer myself.
I'm not trying to get the riot act from you guys.
Geez soon, like what's going on here? Anyway, Steve's widened
his lead by one point. That's that's the difference of
Hey you Chargers.
Speaker 3 (55:13):
Yeah, Chargers smacked that over almost single By the.
Speaker 1 (55:17):
Way, it was funny because after we did our show
last week, I was looking like, you know, some of
the game because you know, I'm my gambling is not good.
Everybody was with you, Everybody was picking the other.
Speaker 4 (55:30):
I getcause I know you don't think. Honestly, I didn't
think Trey Lance would play that long. And the longer
he stayed in the game, he just kept scoring.
Speaker 11 (55:36):
Mark on before the week, said he was going to
play until the third quarter. Yeah, although the Lions gave
him some gifts to start too.
Speaker 4 (55:43):
I missed it.
Speaker 1 (55:43):
So, by the way, as good as he looked, that's
how bad the Lions were at quarterback. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (55:50):
Well, I mean their backups on defense too look terrible.
Speaker 11 (55:52):
It's not even just that, it's like it's also the
rotation they were doing where they put in Kyle Allen
with the higher unit where instead of Hen and Hooker,
which then leads you to everything of Kyle Allen's gonna
be looking for a job for too long. Anyway, Let's
move on to what we have here. Let's get our
usuals's the big ones going before we get into your
NFL futures. And let's take us straight back since we're
(56:15):
talking preseason, to what started per fat picks, which is
the topic of Shadear Sanders. Now, I'm not going to
go I someone joke to me that I should just
go to the over under half a snap in the
preseason game, but we know he's going to get a
lot more time than that.
Speaker 3 (56:30):
And I was trying to formulate.
Speaker 11 (56:31):
Something that you would be able to pick over underrun
regardless of how much or how little Shader Sanders plays,
and I believe he will be playing this preseason game. So, gentlemen,
I am setting the line at Shadeur Sanders completion percentage
over under sixty and a half. So for this first
preseason game, for this first preseason game they play on
Friday against the And I just had it up.
Speaker 4 (56:59):
That goes into for me, what type of play calling,
what they have for them. They're gonna ease them in
with some easy dump ball to at That part doesn't
that part doesn't. That part doesn't concern me at all.
I played enough football myself and know that that doesn't
matter whether you're completing to a one or two or three.
Speaker 3 (57:16):
Right by the way, by the way, yeah they're at
the Panthers.
Speaker 4 (57:19):
Yeah, run the damn route, throw the ball. Catch the ball.
Doesn't matter if you were two or three at the
balls throwing, So you catch the damn ball. It's what
plays are called.
Speaker 1 (57:28):
Yeah, by the way, that's a good number, Chris, it's
a break number.
Speaker 4 (57:37):
I'll just take the under because I believe I believe
that there's gonna I think there's gonna be a lot
of people that get out on the field with them
knowing all the talk that's going on, which a lot
of this stuff could have been put to and then
and the owner didn't do it, The front alls didn't
do any of themselves any help this past week. I'll
go under.
Speaker 1 (57:55):
Well, I'm trying to think again, how much he's gonna play,
how much Gabriel is gonna play.
Speaker 3 (58:00):
Obviously, both those guys are going to see action in
this game.
Speaker 4 (58:02):
They want to see what both keys rookies.
Speaker 5 (58:03):
Look Flacco and Piggy just got back.
Speaker 1 (58:06):
But I think that they will throw passes. I mean,
how else is he gonna evaluate these guys? You got
to see them throw the football. So, for instance, if
against see Shador Sanders Gill three out of five passing, well,
that's under, right, So you know it's like, if he
only throws five passes, he completes three, that's an under.
Speaker 4 (58:23):
If he goes three for six, if he goes four
for eight.
Speaker 1 (58:26):
Right, four for seven, it's under, but five for seven
is over.
Speaker 3 (58:32):
So five for eight is over. That's sixty two point.
Speaker 4 (58:39):
So I am you're going under. I'm going I'm going
under because I could see like five and eleven.
Speaker 1 (58:46):
Maybe I'm gonna roll the dice on this one. I'm
gonna go over on this one. I'm taking a risk,
but I'm like, okay, could he go five for eight?
I don't truck the peish, especially if they're short passes. Yeah,
he could definitely do that.
Speaker 11 (59:03):
So yeah, I actually has a high completed percentage from college, so.
Speaker 3 (59:08):
Yeah, oh, get very high percentage.
Speaker 1 (59:10):
But again that so did Tim Tebow have a high
percentage in college. But I'll roll the dice on the
over right, I got an over from Steve and under
from Vjail. All right, this is what I like. Now,
we did the Michael Piot Parsons contract over under a half.
We're still waiting on that average value if that even happens.
Speaker 11 (59:29):
So I'm just I'm moving that bet over to the
long term board at this point, and I'm gonna throw
another one, but we're gonna make sure it's not long term.
Terry McLaurin contract over under a half, new contract before
next show. I gotta imagine this cannot be.
Speaker 3 (59:45):
As all right, well see as the Cowboys. But who
knows me? Jay went first last time.
Speaker 4 (59:50):
I'll go host.
Speaker 1 (59:50):
This is easy for me, Okay, So McLaurin, I mean
it does seem unbelievable. I mean, I get believe me,
the Micah Parson situation one hundred. I can understand why
he's upset. Why is mclauren upset? I'm sorry, why are
you upset? Your Your team sucked and now they bring
(01:00:11):
in a quarterback that made everybody good. You were just
in the NFC Championship game and now you went out
just because you're not getting enough money.
Speaker 3 (01:00:20):
So I'm gonna go Okay, So over means that he
is still contract.
Speaker 1 (01:00:26):
Yeah no, no, no, it doesn't mean that we went on
this whole thing with Michael Parsons.
Speaker 3 (01:00:32):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (01:00:32):
So in other words, over means he still hasn't signed
a contracts right, I'm gonna go over.
Speaker 4 (01:00:40):
I hate to agree. I know you don't like that,
but here's my reason. Once some player asks for a trade,
it normally delays the contracts on it.
Speaker 5 (01:00:48):
It doesn't speed it up.
Speaker 4 (01:00:50):
No, because exactly because you which which I'm sorry, I
had that brand this time last year. I said Michael
parksonys would ask for trade by this year because they
paid CD first, and a year later here we are
right here on this network. So I'm gonna say the
same thing here. Once you ask for a trade, because
then if the franchise feels like you're trying to check them,
you're trying to check them in front of the world.
(01:01:12):
Like you just said, hold up, brother, you've been here,
we get this quarterback, we go on this run and
now because you're not getting pampered to and get it
paraded around as the savior and the reason why we
were so good last year. You want money, okay, we
get that, but now you're asking for trade that. Get
(01:01:32):
to remember this, This Washington ownership is a new group too, right.
This ain't the old group that was there. This ain't
the old guy that was there. You messing with a
new group of gods.
Speaker 11 (01:01:41):
Which is also why this contract's very The dispute is
very interesting because there was a lot of kumbaya about
the new ownership. Absolutely, the NFC Championship, the playoff of
Jeden Daniels, and now here's a big fly in the suit.
Speaker 4 (01:01:54):
Right.
Speaker 5 (01:01:54):
And here's the thing also too, Chris, isn't this the
team that every Aren't they the card right?
Speaker 4 (01:02:00):
That used to be in the mid two thousands to
the late two thousand and tens.
Speaker 5 (01:02:03):
Every year it was going to be the carter. They
were gonna come up, dur and come up. People are
talking about the Commanders like that.
Speaker 4 (01:02:07):
Now, the commanders are everybody's sweetheart to do this miraculous
run because of the run they had last year. And
the last thing we need is our star receiver asking
for trade in the first week of training camp. But
here we are. Ownerships don't like this. It doesn't make
them go, oh, okay, we'll pay you. This ain't the.
Speaker 1 (01:02:28):
NBA understand this also though, the control of the team.
This is the same thing with Micah Parsons and Miglauren.
All Right, so you go into the final year of
your deal. You're under contract to this team. You don't
have a contract beyond that. They can franchise tag you.
Speaker 4 (01:02:42):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (01:02:43):
They can franchise tag you if they you know, we
saw this with Kirk Cousins right where. You know you
don't want to give him a contract extension. You sort
of carry him year by year before the payment balloons
to a you know, an unreasonable amount, So you really
don't have any bargaining power. This is why Jerry Jones
is ignoring Michael Parsons. Right now, Dude, you're under contract
(01:03:04):
next year. If you don't want to play, then you
don't get paid.
Speaker 3 (01:03:07):
That's up to you.
Speaker 1 (01:03:09):
But on top of that, we can franchise Hagging for
two more years.
Speaker 4 (01:03:13):
Jerry messed up on that one though, that that's the problem.
He can say all of that, you're correct with everything
you just said is one hundred percent true.
Speaker 5 (01:03:22):
But he screwed this up.
Speaker 4 (01:03:24):
Because he signed the receiver first, and receivers can be
had in this league. It's hard to find guys that
can rush the passer and control the side of the
ball the way Michael Parsons has proven in the NFL.
He can do, you can have and you already had
Amari Cooper. You had a dominant one, and you thought
this new younger kid who didn't have to blow up
(01:03:47):
here and you had to pay him and not pay
your guy. He screwed that up. So Washington's not in
that conundrum right now. But I still just say I'm
with I hate to agree, but I'm just over. The
trade request to me makes it over.
Speaker 11 (01:03:58):
The big issue for Terry McLaurin is just he's not
one of those guys would you probably put in the
top five there?
Speaker 4 (01:04:02):
Where's what?
Speaker 3 (01:04:03):
Where's where? We're talking with Michael Michael Parsons like.
Speaker 5 (01:04:06):
He's not a top ten receiver in NFL.
Speaker 4 (01:04:08):
No, he's not. He's not.
Speaker 1 (01:04:09):
All right, we'll have we'll have a replacement for that one.
On the other side, we got a lot.
Speaker 3 (01:04:14):
That's going up there. But I've got a third one.
Speaker 1 (01:04:16):
Sorry, we got we got a lot going on here
with the Perfet picks. But first let's find out what
is a trending. Speaking of Perfet, she is just that yndnest.
Speaker 4 (01:04:29):
All right, we'll start here.
Speaker 10 (01:04:30):
In the NFL, Guys Raider safety Lonnie Johnson Junior suffered
a broken fibula during Saturday's practice at Allegiance Stadium. Eagles
wide receiver aj Brown dealing with the hamstring injury. Bill's
running back James Cook did not participate in a mandatory
practice and he just told the media, he told reporters business,
he's not practicing because of business.
Speaker 3 (01:04:52):
Business. Business. That's it. We all have business. We all
need for hours a day exactly.
Speaker 10 (01:04:57):
So that's why he is not participating in a mandatory proact.
Wide receiver Khalils Shakir is week to week with the
high ankle sprain. According to head coach Sean McDermott. In
the WNBA the Links have traded for wings guard dj A.
Speaker 3 (01:05:08):
Carrington.
Speaker 10 (01:05:09):
We'll check on baseball where the MLB Speedway Classic? Why
do we have baseball at places where it rains?
Speaker 4 (01:05:17):
Why do we have baseball anywhere but a baseball don
I'm not a case. This has been fun.
Speaker 3 (01:05:22):
I didn't want to waste a lot of time in this.
It happened.
Speaker 1 (01:05:24):
I had to watch this last night because I was working.
I was lapping my ass up. First of all, they
took the field. It was pooring, I know, it was pouring,
and then you heard all the other stories. They ran
out of food they had. The CD was horrific. I mean,
everything that could go wrong, and you're watching as a
Rod and Big Poppy and Jeter were sitting there trying
(01:05:45):
to you know, stratch guys. We got to fill an
entire prime time night programming with no game. It was
a catastrophe, it was.
Speaker 4 (01:05:55):
And why baseball should be played at baseball stadium? Thank you?
I think it'd be fun.
Speaker 10 (01:06:00):
There's so many games in a season you can throw
a fun one, But why a place where rain do it?
In La somewhere where you're not going to worry about rain.
That's that's my big ripe with it. You know what
I'm saying.
Speaker 4 (01:06:10):
Last tornado season, let's go right, let's.
Speaker 3 (01:06:13):
Finally somebody posted a picture.
Speaker 1 (01:06:15):
They wanted to get hot dogs and not just and
the nachos were just chips.
Speaker 3 (01:06:20):
There was nothing on the chips. Yes, and then the
hot dog had no body?
Speaker 10 (01:06:24):
Yeah, no mine. And I don't think they were on
a diet.
Speaker 4 (01:06:26):
You know what I'm saying. It wasn't a Rob Parker
diet right there.
Speaker 10 (01:06:29):
Wow, Well, that catastrophe is officially over. And the Braves
won a forty two against the red.
Speaker 1 (01:06:35):
By the way, they had to scrambled because they were
supposed to fly in and fly out. Everyone had to
scramble to get hotel rooms.
Speaker 10 (01:06:43):
Again again, Why did you a p I swear weather happens?
Speaker 3 (01:06:46):
I don't, okay.
Speaker 10 (01:06:47):
The Brewers have a five to one lead over the
Nationals after six innings. They also placed their rookie star
Jacob Mazerowski on the fifteen day. I l The Blue
Jays are edging now the Royals to one top of
the seventh inning, the twins of a forty two lead
over the Guard's bottom of the seventh still all Marlins
against the Yankees six to one top of the seventh,
Mets added another run, but it doesn't matter because the
Giants are still up seven to bottom of the sixth
(01:07:10):
Orioles have tied the game against the Cubs two to
two after four innings. And does anyone care about the
Pirates and the Rockies. Well, Pittsburgh is up five zero.
Top of the second inning, Red Sox outscored the Astro
six to one. Dodgers shut out the Rays three zero.
Speaker 4 (01:07:24):
Back to you guys, Mancia. Everyone was waiting for your
Pirates and Rockies. They were waiting.
Speaker 1 (01:07:33):
Did you see the trophy? They just handed this guy
the Speedway Classic. So this guy Eli White that nobody
knows that two armers for the Braves. That no, they
literally just handed him the largest sports trophy of all time.
Speaker 4 (01:07:46):
Yeah, look at that things. Why is that so big?
Speaker 5 (01:07:51):
You know, I go for I like it.
Speaker 3 (01:07:56):
Now we're pinging on my culture.
Speaker 11 (01:07:57):
It is the Midwest custom to just hand out race
in them giant barrel sized trophy.
Speaker 5 (01:08:03):
I'm gonna take it to the give away.
Speaker 3 (01:08:05):
We give away a pig. Paul Bunyan's statue.
Speaker 4 (01:08:08):
Those these are I mean, think about think about this.
Speaker 1 (01:08:11):
The World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world, right,
the world.
Speaker 4 (01:08:15):
Copy and that little thing is they give you a
can of lighthole, they give you a can of limit life.
Speaker 1 (01:08:22):
So World Cup, this guy just got a trophy.
Speaker 4 (01:08:27):
Unlievable. The world copies about the size of the ring.
Speaker 12 (01:08:32):
Don't get you a data rated hold. Have you ever
seen when all sixteen guys and they're trying to touch it?
Speaker 4 (01:08:49):
Oh my god, that is unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (01:08:51):
So mess okay, yeah, what's get where the Fox Sports

Honestly, second talk though, bron I just thought about that
the World Cup. It is the biggest turn and it looks.
Speaker 5 (01:09:28):
Like what it looks like a data break.
Speaker 11 (01:09:31):
If it can be used by a goalie to simulate,
you know, part of thrusting that he did.
Speaker 4 (01:09:39):
He's able to room.
Speaker 3 (01:09:40):
I was able to do that.
Speaker 4 (01:09:42):
It's only one guy in the middle holding twins jump.
Speaker 1 (01:09:45):
I mean, then this guy had to rent a Forkliff
to get this thing up in the air.
Speaker 4 (01:09:49):
Wow, oh god, I just thought about that.
Speaker 11 (01:09:52):
Oh, since we're talking baseball real quick, one more before
we get onto the NFL futures. Yes, uh, this is
what I get for working with Dodgers fans all over
the places that Shay has recommended this one because the
Dodgers still kind of slumped a bit. Mookie Betts over
under third about three hundred batting average. Bye next week
(01:10:16):
talking talking the games, hitting thirty right now, that would
be this this stretch of games.
Speaker 4 (01:10:22):
No, no, no, no. So you're saying this.
Speaker 9 (01:10:24):
Week in the in these games of this week starting
nothing else after this week or before this week.
Speaker 4 (01:10:29):
Okay, well today's game is already over, so that's over.
Speaker 1 (01:10:32):
So you're talking about Monday, Monday, Saturday exactly when we're
back here.
Speaker 4 (01:10:37):
Okay, so Monday through Saturday. Let me take a.
Speaker 9 (01:10:39):
Look, will Will you have a batting average of over three.
Speaker 4 (01:10:42):
For the week, for the week, Yes, like we do
with all our other ones under under over underthings not right?
I need I need to So that was not right.
We've been talking about this pre ye long. Something wrong
with movies still looks smaller.
Speaker 1 (01:11:00):
I mean he hit two oh five in the month
of July under guys two oh five. Alright, so the
doc Saint Louis, No I had three hundred.
Speaker 3 (01:11:13):
Let's see here.
Speaker 4 (01:11:16):
Second, so you've got three games.
Speaker 11 (01:11:18):
You got a three game stretch with Saint Louis coming
up here, and you're gonna have two games against Toronto
on Friday and Saturday.
Speaker 1 (01:11:25):
Uh okay, so that's five games.
Speaker 4 (01:11:28):
That's don't wake up in August. Five games.
Speaker 1 (01:11:31):
They're off Thursday, so three home games.
Speaker 3 (01:11:36):
So all right, I rolled the dice before I'm gonna
roll the dice again.
Speaker 4 (01:11:41):
On Mookie.
Speaker 3 (01:11:42):
I'm a Mookie fan, Okay.
Speaker 1 (01:11:44):
The only Dodger game I attended this year was Mookie
bets Jersey Night, Okay, when I wasn't working television. So
I took my son to that game because Mookie is
his favorite player and he's one of my favorite players.
So I'm gonna say five games, all at home, Cardinal.
Speaker 4 (01:12:00):
I know the Blue Jays are sitting pretty in.
Speaker 1 (01:12:02):
The American League, but all well to day said he
can hit three hundred for five games.
Speaker 11 (01:12:06):
Yes, I am still not a believer in the Jays,
and I think they will cool off to be fair.
Speaker 1 (01:12:10):
Too, well, they might but who's going to catch them Dodgers?
Speaker 4 (01:12:14):
I mean the Yankees are.
Speaker 11 (01:12:18):
Yeah, no no, no, no, no no no. All right,
let's move on to the NFL futures. I'm gonna save
the big one here for just last. But first let's
clean out some of the lesser fish we've been trying
to gutt in filet here.
Speaker 3 (01:12:30):
Let's start with the Jets. The win total is set
at six and a half.
Speaker 11 (01:12:34):
New head coach under Justin Fields under under under six
and a half?
Speaker 4 (01:12:40):
Really, really you are?
Speaker 11 (01:12:42):
You are really channeling bow right here, number one, Justin Fieldsator.
Speaker 3 (01:12:45):
Yeah, under six and a half.
Speaker 1 (01:12:47):
You know what Justin Field's all time record is as
a starting quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:12:50):
I don't want to think about it because it means
a lot of wins over the Lions.
Speaker 1 (01:12:53):
Steve Okay, so what do you say, Ja, I'm going
under six and a half.
Speaker 4 (01:12:59):
As much as I hate them bum ass Jets, something
just tells me to Terry Glenn, they have a defense, like,
they have guys that can play on that side of
the ball, which means for most Sundays they're gonna be
in games. And what you need is a quarterback to
then be able to make playing or two to help
(01:13:22):
either sustain you still being in that game or coming
back and winning that game and not losing it. The
AFC is just so strong. Though we don't know what
that happened was gonna happen with Drake May and those Patriots.
We already think, I think we know who the Bills
already are. But the AFC is just stacked. I mean,
it's just really stacked. And there's teams we just don't
(01:13:42):
know about. The entire AFC West, the entire AFC North, right,
Like we don't know those all those teams can win
ten games. Every last one of those teams can win
ten games. So where they're getting these wins from? Unless
the offense and just justin fields just falls apart and
he's not the guy did not say under, But what
if he does make a couple of scrambled plays, what
(01:14:04):
if he does make a couple of Russian touchdowns that
prolong a couple of plays and makes a couple of
threats Like they still got Geart was like they still
got weapons, They still got guys, They still got.
Speaker 1 (01:14:13):
Breese Hall, like they still have guys, got Garrett Wilson.
Speaker 4 (01:14:16):
You know, I think they can get this. I hate
to say it. I think they can get the seven,
but they didn't get the seventh. That means that someone
is gonna be at six and five or whatever the
win total. Steven think the Golfers a winning six games,
so then he's got to think that Jet's gonna win
more than them. So I will reluctantly take the over
them this one.
Speaker 3 (01:14:35):
That's the worst division in football.
Speaker 4 (01:14:37):
Buffalo will have a seven game at the end of
the season. No, the AFC North is the worst division.
South South South, excuse me, South South South.
Speaker 11 (01:14:45):
Let's let's let's try to get one more fish here
since we're running low on time. But the Packers, who
I do not believe in and you cannot convince me
to believe in them, but their win total is set
at nine and a half. There is I find this
fascinating because all the other teams in the NFC North
have some sort of issue going on with them that
you could say, yeah, I could see them taking step back.
(01:15:07):
The Lions, after replace two coordinators already racking up some injuries,
the Bears have to install a new coach and keep
working out Caleb Williams. The Vikings new quarterback in JJ McCarthy,
Packers ain't got an excuse this year, and yet somehow
it's only nine and a half for the win total over.
Speaker 4 (01:15:26):
Under.
Speaker 3 (01:15:27):
I believe with Jordan Love under, I'll take the under
on this.
Speaker 4 (01:15:30):
That's the thing.
Speaker 11 (01:15:30):
This roster the entire average and realize on what you
feel about Jordan Love.
Speaker 1 (01:15:35):
The NFC North was a big story in twenty twenty four.
They are the come down division of football this year,
Colm Down the vision of football this year, which is
why they're over unders are so different. All right, that
is it for this edition of the per Fat Picks,
But we still have more NFL news to get to.
Speaker 3 (01:15:52):
This is Fox Sports Sunday.
Speaker 1 (01:15:54):
Steve Harbin VJ Husky, Fox Sports Sunday. We're here in
the Fox Sports radio studios.
Speaker 4 (01:16:02):
All right.
Speaker 1 (01:16:07):
There was one football story that we touched upon a
week ago that ended up with some good news to
some degree, and that was the Deon Sanders story. So
we were speculating on why Dion Sanders was going to
hold a press conference.
Speaker 4 (01:16:21):
Wasn't that supposed to be on Perfect Picks, Now that
we mintion it didn't we have.
Speaker 3 (01:16:26):
That, but neither one of us. Yeah, you guys both
took the same side that he would still be kad Gart.
Speaker 1 (01:16:30):
Yeah, we both prediction that he wasn't going to leave,
and he didn't. So, but we were curious why doctors
are going to be there, and we found out about
his diagnosis for bladder cancer.
Speaker 3 (01:16:43):
Let me say this about Dion Sanders.
Speaker 4 (01:16:45):
Okay, there's two things.
Speaker 1 (01:16:47):
When you talk about the greatest athletes of all time,
he's on that list. He's the only guy to play
in a Super Bowl and a World Series. He wasn't
just a obviously he's one of the greatest football players
of all time, but he wasn't a marginal talent in baseball.
I mean, had he played baseball full time, legitimately, he
could have been an All Star. Had he played a
(01:17:08):
could have been So he is that. As a coach,
he has been. Basically he got into coaching with his sons.
That was the whole deal. First at Jackson State and
then with the Buffaloes. Yeah, exactly, so it's about coaching
his sons. Well, now the sons have gone through and
I'm anxious to see I root for Deon Sanders. I'm
(01:17:29):
always been a Deon Sanders fan. I got a chance
to meet him one year at the Super Bowl he's
a care He's exactly what you would think he is
when you just talk to the guy behind the scenes.
Good friend of my former partner, Pat O'Brien, so he
got me in the mix a little bit talking to Dion.
Speaker 3 (01:17:44):
So I root for Deon Sanders, but.
Speaker 1 (01:17:46):
I'm curious to see what he can do as a coach.
Speaker 3 (01:17:51):
Is he motivated?
Speaker 1 (01:17:52):
He had the motivation as a father to do what
was best for his sons, to help his sons along
the way. That is very admirable, right, But now that
their sons are out, will he have the same fire,
Will he have the same impact as a coach?
Speaker 3 (01:18:07):
I want to see what he does.
Speaker 1 (01:18:08):
I was happy with the news that he will continue
on at the University of Colorado, so that to me
was sort of a you know, the biggest story obviously
is that he has fortunately gotten through this ordeal at
least for now. But I actually to see what he
can actually do as a coach without coaching his sons.
Speaker 4 (01:18:24):
Well, here's the thing, and I don't know if people
have been listening to him. He said many times before
he didn't have two sons on the team. He had
eighty sons on the team, right, all right, so he's
doing what was best for all those kids, not just
his sons, not just Shiloh and Shador, for all the
kids that's there, and including Travis and pushing him to
(01:18:48):
win the Heisman Trophy and being a top five NFL
draft pick. All right, look at the roster of coaches
this man has building, and he has brought in Warren
sat and he is bought in Ed Reid, and he
is bought in Byron Leftwich, who is won a Super Bowl, Okay,
who is coached on the levels that the highest levels
(01:19:12):
in the biggest games that you can ever coach in.
There's a difference in college football between a head coach
and the CEO. Some guys are built to just coach,
like they just want to coach. They don't want to
do anything else. They don't want to deal with boosters,
they don't want to do your weekly interview. They don't
(01:19:34):
want to really talk to teachers and professors and go
to this speaking engagement and that is speak trust me.
I covered college football Division one, okay for three straight years.
The trust me.
Speaker 5 (01:19:45):
Their coaches that want no part of that.
Speaker 4 (01:19:48):
Yes, but there are coaches that are more CEO type
that get it and they understand that this is what
I have to do here. But when I'm I'm gonna
do is surround myself with a bunch of other good
coaches who just want to coach. I'll do the press conference,
I'll do the Wednesday radio show at the local brewery.
(01:20:11):
I'll do all the talking to the professors. I'll do
all the smoothing over with the parents. I'll do all
the smoothing over with the friends of the program and
the boosters and on and the alumni and all of
that stuff.
Speaker 5 (01:20:21):
I'll take care of all. That's who coach Prime is.
Speaker 4 (01:20:24):
Yeah, he knows football, but he's look at the staff
he's putting together. You know, when you want to coach
the kids.
Speaker 1 (01:20:30):
When you talk about that, the late great John Robinson
USC coach with the Rams.
Speaker 4 (01:20:34):
With the Rams also, that's exactly who he was. He
was a CEO. He was beautiful with the meeting.
Speaker 3 (01:20:40):
He knew how to handle everybody. But his coaching staff.
Speaker 1 (01:20:43):
Was loaded, absolutely loaded, and allowed them delegate authority, allow
them to do their jobs. That's a great part about
being a very effective head coach. So I look at
I I think that we'll see I mean, we'll see
where Colorado goes next.
Speaker 4 (01:21:00):
This whole thing.
Speaker 1 (01:21:01):
By the way, it's interesting with Shiloh, the older brother, who,
by the way, people forget, he actually started college cour
at South Carolina before his dad got the job at
Jackson's State and then obviously follow him.
Speaker 4 (01:21:11):
To Colorado as well.
Speaker 1 (01:21:13):
So he's ask out he might actually have a chance
to make the Bucks.
Speaker 4 (01:21:17):
He will make the Bucks even though.
Speaker 1 (01:21:19):
He wasn't drafted. We'll see how that plays out. John
palm Morosi coming up in the next hour. This is
Fox Sports Sunday, having as much fun as humanly possible.
That's what we do every Sunday here Fox Sports Sunday.
We're in the Fox Sports Radio studios. Coming up, we're
going to be able to check in with John pal Morosi.
Last week we did not hook up a JP was
(01:21:39):
in Cooperstown as he normally is, and his schedule with
the MLB network conflicted with our schedule, so unfortunately we
were not able to hook over him last week. We
will today get his thoughts on what happened in Cooperstown
last week, and obviously as we head down the stretch
post trade deadline in Major League Baseball, and as we
mentioned earlier, if you look over the whole scene of
(01:22:02):
Major League Baseball. It's pretty packed right now. By the way,
do you see the Rockies what they did against the
Pirates yesterday? They were down nine and nothing in the
first inning. You're like, Wow, could the Rockies be any worse?
They won the game seventeen sixteen on a walk off.
Speaker 5 (01:22:18):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (01:22:18):
I mean that's good stuff. It's great stuff, especially when
you're that bad man. You gotta have something. Listen, the
sun shines on the dogs, you know what, every now
and then? Right, yea even a broken clock is what? Right?
Two times a day? You know? Just you know, storm
passes by, man, Rainbow's coming out again. It's gonna get
stormy again in Colorado, that's for damn sure. But you
(01:22:40):
know why not? All right?
Speaker 1 (01:22:42):
So we got college football also coming up here? Do
you do you get excited about the college football season?
Speaker 4 (01:22:50):
Of course, just as much as the NFL, just as
much as high school.
Speaker 1 (01:22:53):
I'm a football nutt, I'm a football junkie.
Speaker 3 (01:22:56):
I know you're a football junkie.
Speaker 4 (01:22:58):
I know you are. I mean a way throwing.
Speaker 1 (01:23:00):
So let's let's talk a little bit about let's do
it arch Manny in Texas. So the opening game for
Texas is Ohio States. You got Texas and he got
Ohio State to start the season. So Arch Manning is
an overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. Of course,
(01:23:22):
his uncle Peyton was also the overwhelming favorite when he
decided to unexpectedly return for his senior season at Tennessee
to win the Heisman, and he ended up losing to the.
Speaker 3 (01:23:33):
More deserving Charles Whitson.
Speaker 4 (01:23:36):
That was.
Speaker 1 (01:23:38):
That was before I was voting, But I would have
voted for Whitson as well, because again the difference he
made for that Michigan team was undefeated, ranked number one
in the country versus Peyton Manning. You know who had
a couple of acups. Think about Peyton many never beat Florida.
Oh and FDA never any wrefull beat him twice, you know,
not just beat him twice.
Speaker 4 (01:23:58):
If you remember the rain game down in Knoxville where
Tennessee was ranking like number two or three in the nature.
I want to say, this is maybe like ninety six
or nine is the last one t Martin beat him
and and uh that's the last time they beat him.
But no, this is Peyton Manny. Okay, maybe, and Florida
lost to t Martin. So Worfle won the Heisman in
ninety six. So the next year Manny comes back and
(01:24:18):
that's the year that tem Martin is the quarterback. No,
but I'm talking about the year prior to that. We
talk about Waffle. That game is in Yes in the Rain, Yeah,
and Florida goes in there with Jacquez Green, Redale, Anthony
and I can't remember an Ike Killard, Yes, and.
Speaker 5 (01:24:35):
Vim and Waffle. Before you blinked, it was twenty one.
Speaker 4 (01:24:38):
They were toasting Philip Former's defense in the Rain and
that was the year people thought, Okay, Yeah, then Manny
comes back that following year. But that that that junior year,
Florida went in there and trounced them like he could
never beat beat Spurrier. But just on Charles Woodson. It
wasn't just the difference he made. If you go back,
(01:25:00):
I can look at every big game all year long,
starting against Michigan State with the interception with the one
hand interception with the toe touchdown on the sideline, and
then the second interception to steal the game. If you
go back to the Penn State game where he covers
Joe Jarvisis and SUTs him down, he also has a
deep slant pattern that breaks that game open. The Ohio
(01:25:21):
State punt return, plus the interception over David Boston in
the end zone thrown by Joe Jermaine to stop Ohio
State from scoring on that drive. He just made every
single play, not included the interception against Nordre Dame that
stopped Nordre Dame from driving to try to win that
game up at the Big House. It wasn't just the impact,
it was the big plays were made by him all
(01:25:42):
year long. All right.
Speaker 1 (01:25:43):
I got a little discombobulate because people are like screaming,
what are you talking about. Timartin obviously followed five May
and beat Florida, and of course it won the national
championship of ninety eight, the.
Speaker 4 (01:25:53):
Ninety seven game.
Speaker 1 (01:25:55):
Doug Johnson, you know who, also is a backup quarterback
for Florida that year, tinety seven, Peyton's senior year when
they beat Tennessee again. Palmer, Jesse Palmer, very good, how
you go, excellent job. Yeah that Jesse Palmer was statistically
one of the worst quarterbacks of all time, but he
(01:26:16):
was a backup quarterback for Tennessee. But getting back to
where arch Manning is right now, it's immense pressure on
arch Obviously, no man he's.
Speaker 3 (01:26:24):
Won that Heisman trophy.
Speaker 1 (01:26:26):
You know, his grandfather f third, his uncle's both finished
second and third. Eli was third and Peyton was second.
So they're waiting for one Manning to walk away with
a heavy hardware. But they open up against Ohio State.
Now what's interesting about that? And people were making the
point while you're trying to project because I'm seeing Texas
rank number one. Georgia obviously is in the mix, even
(01:26:48):
though they're gonna have to break in a new quarterback
this year. Ohio State's going to be in the mix.
Another team looking at the idea of quarterbacks a big
position in college. There's a lot to be said about
having a quarterback that has experience. And even though Arch
Manning was a backup to Quinn Yours, he's had enough
experience so he should be ready to go in his
(01:27:08):
third year at.
Speaker 3 (01:27:09):
The University of Texas. I'm excited.
Speaker 1 (01:27:11):
I just I love the start of every college football season.
We don't have to, you know, troll through preseason games boom,
you know. But the thing about it is the loser
of that game, as we found out a year ago,
to lost Ohio state team who's coach Ryan Day almost
got fired after losing to your beloved Michigan Wolverines, ends
(01:27:34):
up winning a national champion.
Speaker 5 (01:27:36):
Well it's not I mean, god, I mean it says
national champions.
Speaker 3 (01:27:39):
They won four playoff games.
Speaker 5 (01:27:41):
Yeah, well, I don't care.
Speaker 3 (01:27:44):
We don't care.
Speaker 4 (01:27:45):
I don't care. I don't care. They took on the
number one team in the country them out. Don't chair
their own legend, their own legend. Woody Hayes once famously said,
and every one road win it. You can't claim a
national championshit if you don't win the game. So don't
(01:28:06):
tell me because this one year, forty five fifty years
later you do it.
Speaker 5 (01:28:11):
You're going against Woody.
Speaker 4 (01:28:12):
Oh wow?
Speaker 5 (01:28:13):
Is that how we doing this?
Speaker 3 (01:28:14):
Called a playoff?
Speaker 4 (01:28:15):
I'm not going against bo Sham Beckler. Bo Sham Beckler
said it in the sixties and seventies. That means it
still rings true to I don't care.
Speaker 3 (01:28:25):
Come on, that was a different year.
Speaker 6 (01:28:27):
Row.
Speaker 4 (01:28:27):
I don't want to hear that.
Speaker 5 (01:28:28):
We have no playoff now.
Speaker 1 (01:28:30):
But this is the It's just like the New York
Giants beat Okay, Eli Manning beat I love this Eli
Manning beat Tom Brady well though, actually the New York
Giants defense both years was able to slow down Tom
Brady enough for a less than you know, overwhelming Giants
offense to get across the finish line.
Speaker 4 (01:28:51):
That was the reality.
Speaker 1 (01:28:52):
But in no stretch of the imagination can you say that,
even though the Giants won both those games, that the
Giants are better teams than the New England Patriots those
two years. On that day, they worked all right, And
that's the only day that matter. And that's exactly what
a playoff is. That's what a playoff. That's fine, that's fine.
(01:29:13):
Now college has a playoff.
Speaker 4 (01:29:15):
And right something everybody wanted. And I'm not I'm not
trying to like you don't like it, I don't mind.
It doesn't matter to me. All I'm saying you are
more or less than twelve teams. If you want, I
like eight, I like a twelve twelves a lot.
Speaker 3 (01:29:29):
Well, here's what The BUYE was a disaster. The bye
was the disaster.
Speaker 5 (01:29:32):
So here's the thing.
Speaker 4 (01:29:33):
It doesn't matter how you ranked them, it doesn't matter
how you seated them. Just common sense tells everyone listening
and in the studio right now, there are not twelve
national champion contender football programs in college football right now,
let's not do this.
Speaker 3 (01:29:50):
Let me ask you this.
Speaker 1 (01:29:51):
If you're gonna go right now, we don't have a
Power five because obviously the Pac twelve is gone, right,
So you have the ACC, the SEC, the Big Ten,
and the Big twelve. Okay, those are your four major conferences, right,
So how about a playoff where you take the top.
Speaker 3 (01:30:07):
Two teams from each of the conferences?
Speaker 4 (01:30:09):
Done?
Speaker 3 (01:30:10):
Or do you say no, no, no, no, no, no
no no.
Speaker 1 (01:30:13):
The SCC and the Big Ten they deserve three each,
and then we'll take one team out.
Speaker 4 (01:30:18):
Of the ACC and one team out of the Because
if that's the case, when your damn games, that's the
This was my argument since this all started.
Speaker 5 (01:30:24):
This is nothing new. I'm only regurgitato, I said, but.
Speaker 1 (01:30:26):
What shouldn't they conference champion if you have a conference
championship game being automatic qualifier.
Speaker 4 (01:30:31):
Right right, So you take the five top conferences who
win the conference championship game, those five are in, and
then you take the next three best teams in the
nation by whatever metric, computer, chart.
Speaker 5 (01:30:46):
Graph, bar Ai, I don't care.
Speaker 4 (01:30:49):
But also make sure you use the eye test because
SMU had a cute little nice year. But did you
ever think SMU had enough talent to win the national championship?
If you're saying yeah, you're either a fan or you're
not telling me.
Speaker 3 (01:31:04):
Do you think Boys State had a chance?
Speaker 1 (01:31:06):
No?
Speaker 4 (01:31:07):
Namey three of you boys?
Speaker 2 (01:31:08):
Did?
Speaker 3 (01:31:09):
Arizona State had a chance?
Speaker 4 (01:31:12):
Why would I Why would I think Arizona State that
have a chewing one think twelve and and and beat
out Colorado? We know and I did the Colorado had
a chance to win the National championship last year. I
thought three teams had a chance to win the National Championship.
Speaker 3 (01:31:27):
Okay, so why are you having a playoff?
Speaker 4 (01:31:29):
Money?
Speaker 1 (01:31:30):
But by the way, with all the criticism that the
BCS Championship game got, which I used to love pretty
much with few exceptions, you realize the Texas USC game,
which still will go to as one of the greatest games.
Speaker 4 (01:31:43):
Ever, might be the greatest game ever.
Speaker 3 (01:31:45):
If you would have those.
Speaker 1 (01:31:46):
Teams in a playoff, it is conceivable one of them
could have had a bad day, thank you and got
upset along way.
Speaker 4 (01:31:52):
Used to love the BCS. People used to kill me
when I was a barber back in Virginia and DC,
prom me tell you something I have always was a
BCS guy because I said, yes, there's gonna be a year.
Speaker 1 (01:32:04):
Two thousand, Oh no, no, two thousand. Oklahoma ended up
against Florida State. Even though Florida State lost to the U.
Miami should have been in it was they beat.
Speaker 4 (01:32:14):
Him, had to head but but Miami, Miami lost to Washington. Yeah,
but that's when Miami lost to Washington, Flida, but you
lost to Washington. That they beat him, They beat him, committed,
they law and they went up and the Washington and
they were down twenty one.
Speaker 1 (01:32:29):
And you know they come to you know, Miami and
c and you know Miami would have run Oklahoma they might.
Speaker 4 (01:32:36):
They might have, but might have. Don't lose to Washington
like they trust me. We could go to the year
whereas Florida State in tech and people thought and people
honestly thought Marshall probably should have had a shot room.
I mean, why not.
Speaker 5 (01:32:49):
They were undefeated.
Speaker 4 (01:32:50):
I'm saying there's been these years, but the BCS normally
got the two best team. And at the end of
the day, guys, we can look at this playoff stuff
and look play First of all, the way they la
some of these playoff games, wasn't.
Speaker 5 (01:33:01):
One of them at like one pm in the afternoon
on a weekday.
Speaker 4 (01:33:05):
Why are you playing a college football game at four
thirty pm Eastern Time? That's one thirty in LA. Even
though it's Christmas break. Adults with children and bills have
to work at one thirty on a Wednesday. We can't
be home to watch the game. Get the playoff is fine.
Just make everything primetime, please and get these twelve teams out.
(01:33:26):
There are not twelve teams. There are three.
Speaker 5 (01:33:28):
I'll give you three teams off the top of my
head right now.
Speaker 4 (01:33:30):
They can win the national championship this year.
Speaker 3 (01:33:32):
Georgia, Texas, Ohia State, Penn State.
Speaker 4 (01:33:36):
They're loaded.
Speaker 3 (01:33:37):
I don't like Franklin. I'm sorry, no, no, no, I'm
with you.
Speaker 4 (01:33:40):
I'm with you. With Jay Fra I'm talking about just
the talent that's gonna get put onto the field. They
have as about as as much or maybe more than
a lot of other teams that we're gonna be Like, Dude,
I can't stay in Penn State. I'm a Michigan guy,
but I'm just being an analyst right now. Penn State
foball team.
Speaker 3 (01:33:59):
In a year, this is gonna be their breakout year.
Speaker 4 (01:34:01):
It never happened. I just think that they I say
coaching holds them back.
Speaker 5 (01:34:04):
Are they contender?
Speaker 3 (01:34:05):
They're always a contender, but you gotta get across the finish.
Speaker 4 (01:34:09):
He's just giving you three or fourteen's. I think that
can continue to win that national championship to share, right?
You agree?
Speaker 5 (01:34:14):
So you think Ohio State?
Speaker 1 (01:34:15):
I would, yeah, because they have a track record. They
do have a track record of winning those games. All
those guys on defense they reload. Is gonna light them
up with the first game.
Speaker 3 (01:34:26):
He better because if he doesn't, they're gonna be all over.
Speaker 5 (01:34:29):
Light them up. Oh God, I can't wait.
Speaker 1 (01:34:31):
All right, we have go AI college football coming up.
Speaker 3 (01:34:33):
We always have baseball coming up.
Speaker 1 (01:34:34):
We're gonna check in with the man himself, coming off
a Hall of Fame weekend. He's a Hall of Famer,
the great JP Morosi. This is Fox Sports Sunday, Harbin
and Husky, Fox Sports Sunday. We're in the Fox Sports
Radio studios. Well, last week was a Hall of Fame
weekend in Major League Baseball. This man was in the
thick of things in Cooperstown. We couldn't wriggle them away
(01:34:56):
because well he's in demand. But now we can get
the full story the legend himself. Fox Sports Radio MLB
analyst John Paul Morosi JP is joining us right now.
So JP, we got a lot of ground to cover.
So first of all, thank you very much for joining
us as always. But I have one I have one
lingering question after the ceremonies in the books, and I
(01:35:19):
know you're going to be annoyed by this. I brought
it up before about I'm I ask you one more time.
So when you are judging a baseball player, a Major
League baseball player, for inclusion into the upper echelon that
is the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 3 (01:35:33):
How much of a factor is the postseason?
Speaker 1 (01:35:35):
And the reason I mentioned that it doesn't matter that
Willie Mays didn't hit a home run in four World
Series or that Ted Walliams hit two hundred in his
only World Series, they were off the chart first ballot
Hall of Famers. But if you're a marginal Hall of
Fame candidate, it would seem to me that a postseason
that you know shines would be a prerequisite. And I
(01:35:55):
hate to pick on any one guy, but it bears
mentioning Billy Wagner, who was a elected in his last
ballot as a Hall of Famer by the Baseball Writers
as a closer in fourteen postseason games eleven and two
thirds innings, gave up twenty one hits, thirteen runs, had
a ten point zero three postseason ERA, and just three
(01:36:19):
saves in fourteen appearances. So why was that completely ignored
when people check the box sat Billy Wagner Hall of Fame,
I would say.
Speaker 2 (01:36:32):
That Steve that it was not completely ignored, because if
it would have been completely ignored, he would have probably
gotten in on the third or fourth or fifth try.
It took ten years, and I have zero doubt, zero
doubt that the postseason track record that you're describing is
(01:36:53):
the reason why it took ten years of ballots for
him to get in eventually. And I think that is
the balance point to say you'll have to wait a while,
but eventually you'll get in. Because over pitchers that have
thrown the amount of innings that he has thrown, which
again as a reliever is not a huge amount, he
does have one of the best eras in the history
(01:37:17):
of the game among all pitchers who have been relievers
with at least nine hundred innings. So I do think
there's a balance there. I am of the mind the
postseason should not be unless it was a massive sample,
and unless I felt with historical context that this player
was consistently the reason why his team did not win
(01:37:41):
the World Series. And I think in Wagner's case, obviously
he struggled. But I don't look at those individual years
with Astro's Phillies, mets Braves, red Sox as being determinative
of his team falling short. I think certainly played a role,
he was not the sole reason. And I'd looked at
it more as the postseason being extra credit, as opposed
(01:38:04):
to a potential demerit. You've earned the right to be
in October. I look at that as a time for
you to earn more points in the way that honestly
John Smoltz did, in the way that Kurt Shilling did.
I realized Shilling is not in the Hall of Fame,
but he did get about seventy percent of the vote,
which in most other contexts in American life is pretty
(01:38:25):
darn good, But of course in our world it takes
seventy five. So I voted for Shilling in large part
because his postseason track record merited it, and so I
look at it more as an additive as opposed to
something you could take away if it won as a
subpar show.
Speaker 4 (01:38:43):
JP Good always speaking to you. My man is speaking
about hall of fame and old players. The two guys
that we think are Hall of famers in today's game
and Aaron Judge, he Shall Hey Tani brought up to
you about a month and a half ago lead into
the All Star break. We're trying to find stories, right,
We're trying to find something to grasp to other than
these two guy names. And then one then now goes
(01:39:03):
out on the DL And if Steve and I were
talking and we're just looking across the league, you got
the Brewers with the best record in baseball. You can
win yourself some money at the sports bar today asking
guys that question, because so many guys are going to
get that question wrong. And it feels like there's this
middle of the league right now where it's open. I
still think the Dodgers are the favorites, but it's open.
(01:39:24):
It feels like this next month and a half is
going to be a major, major sprint to the finish
line to grab all these division leads and championships and
then all these wild cards. Is this a good thing
for baseball right now, or is there some cause of
concern that the way this year has gone in the majors.
Speaker 2 (01:39:41):
I think it's a good thing for the game, BJ
and I appreciate the question because we are at a
very unique time in the history of the game. There
are plenty of conversations about the overall economics system and
changes that would have to be made. And yet to
your point, look at the teams of the best record
in the game. Milwaukee is the smallest market right in now.
(01:40:07):
The Sacramento is a little different, but in terms of
a full time MLB market, Milwaukee is the smallest market
in North America that has an MLB team, and they've
got the best record, and the American League tied for
the best record. Toronto is obviously a large market, and
then Detroit, which is a medium market, and so it's
(01:40:29):
an interesting time in the game. I do think listen,
could we have still a Dodgers Yankees World Series? Yes
we could. But to those that thought we were going
to have a continuation of this Yankees Dodgers dominance that
we saw a year ago, that just has not been
the story of the regular season. The Dodgers are having
(01:40:50):
a good regular season, but not a great one. Their
record is behind what the Brewers have, what the Cubs have.
You look at Otani in the month of July, I
believe you bad it something like two to eight in
the month of July. So it's we are seeing some
flaws with these teams. Mookie Betts has struggled a bit
this season. The Dodgers now need their pitching, especially Tayler
(01:41:11):
glass Now starts tomorrow. He needs to have a big start.
He needs to have a big finish to the year
because with Blake Snell coming back now glass Now, they
did not get a major arm at the deadline, and
so without a significant acquisition on the starting pitching side
of things, BJ they need their existing core to be really,
(01:41:34):
really good and that has to start with the likes
of glass Now and Snell, and then Otani if he's
able to be healthy. So, as you can see, I'm
mentioning this Dodger team not being a super team. And
certainly the Yankees, with the way they've played against the
Marlins over the weekend, have shown themselves to have a
lot a lot of work to do and some real
(01:41:57):
concerns about just the lack of fundamental that the Yankees
have had as a ball club.
Speaker 1 (01:42:02):
All Right, I want to preface this by saying, I'm
a believer and playing for now. You know, if you're
in a position to win now, forget about the future, okay,
because that's all speculation. As we say, a prospect is
a suspect until they actually can prove themselves.
Speaker 3 (01:42:18):
So I have no problem with this. That being said
AJ Preller in San Diego.
Speaker 1 (01:42:23):
Then following him from the get go and over the
many years I have done a ledger of hits and misses.
Speaker 3 (01:42:31):
His missus out weighs hits like ten to one.
Speaker 4 (01:42:34):
I mean, it's just unreal.
Speaker 1 (01:42:35):
And the only time really got hits is won the
great Peter Seiler, the late great Peter Seiler, who I loved,
a guy that actually walked the walk and just didn't
talk the talk. Gave him the green light to sign
Manny Machado or you know, let's extend the deal and
give huge money to Tatis and you know, basically spending
money that he didn't have before. That's when he got
(01:42:55):
a hit. That being said, no team made more noise
at the at the trade deadline, not unexpectedly than AJ
Perell that's why he's a baseball favorite. Baseball people love
this guy. He's a savant, you know. Basically, he has
one thing going on in his life, and that's baseball.
So if you're married to the game of baseball, you'd
love hanging out with Aj Preller. But what was your
(01:43:17):
evaluation of what they did and did they do enough?
Because the Dodgers didn't do much of anything. Is it
enough for the Padres to actually leap over the Dodgers
and walk away with an n O West Crown?
Speaker 2 (01:43:29):
Yes, it's enough in my opinion, And I actually think
that AJ's track record, I take a little brighter view
of what he's done. Certainly, the Tatis trade, which we
can't forget, was one of the great lopsided deals in
the history of baseball. That he was able to get
Tatis when he was in the low minor leagues back
(01:43:50):
in June of twenty sixteen. So that's a big time
point to say, Bret, And you're right. Ownership is a
huge element in your success in that you need supportive
ownership if you're going to be able to sign significant players.
And so I fully acknowledge that the late great Peter
Side they had a huge impact on what AJ has
been able to do. Listen, I look at this group.
(01:44:14):
They added three big position players o'hearne Loreano and for me,
for mean is to me a very underrated addition. He's
going to bat in the lower part of the lineup,
but he is a really good catcher and someone who
I think is going to solve that position for them
for a long time become. So I think that was
really really good. I do have some concerns about the
(01:44:36):
rotation depth, and I think they probably could have done
a little bit better at the deadline addressing that. But
they really index heavily, as you know, Steve towards the
bullpen to where they've got Robert Swatez. Now, they added
Mason Miller, they have retained Adam and Morejona in Estrada.
They've got a really good team. And they gave up
the Debrees, who was a big time prospect. I get it,
(01:45:00):
and and that's a significant cost to pay, but I
would much rather be the fan of a team that's
going for it and trying to be creative, and I
think it just sends a really powerful message to the
clubhouse that they are going to try to win the
World Series and they're walking in there, I think, Steed
with a ton of momentum relative to what the Dodgers
have done. So I believe the Padres will win the
(01:45:23):
National League West, and I believe the reason why it
is going to be a lot of the moves that
aj May made here at the trade deadline here in
twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (01:45:31):
If the Padres win the West, does Manny Machado win MVP?
Speaker 2 (01:45:37):
He's got a chance. I mean, I mean again, he's
he has been. You look at guys that have that
have made good on the contracts they have signed, that
are of that of that caliber, and and Machado again
that there's going to be plenty of support for Otani
and there should be. But if Machado leads them to
(01:46:00):
a National League West crown and is the main reason why,
and I think he certainly you could say he would be.
Tatisa's right there in the conversation too, But I think,
and you watch that team carefully, Steve. I believe the Padres,
they predicate a lot of their energy and the way
(01:46:21):
they do things. Based on the fact that Machada is
in the lineup every single day. He is going to
get I believe three thousand hits, he is to me
one of the most impressive players of his generation. Durable,
really good defender as you know, and accountable in the lineup.
Speaker 3 (01:46:39):
I think he's going to be in the Hall of Fame,
I really do.
Speaker 2 (01:46:42):
And I would agree that if they're able to win
this division, we'll see what Pete crow Armstrong does down
the stretch. We'll see what happens with Otani and if
he kind of fades a bit, and how many innings
actually throws on them out Because honestly, the pitching value
of Otani so far this year just there hasn't been
enough of a bulk of sample size to really put
(01:47:02):
it into that special category yet. So I think that
the path is still there, and if they win the division,
he'll have a quite impressive argument I believe to be
the National League.
Speaker 3 (01:47:13):
Going to be I agree with.
Speaker 1 (01:47:14):
And by the way, as we say that, Dodger fans
are throwing up, oh do they hate man mad I'm surprised.
Speaker 2 (01:47:22):
Was briefly, briefly a Dodger helped them get to the
Old Series back in twenty eighteen. Let's not forget that.
Speaker 4 (01:47:27):
Yeah, I'm very surprised. What you both said about the
Padre is you and JP, I'm I'm I'm shocked that well.
I wanted to find out.
Speaker 3 (01:47:34):
But if JP says yeah, they can win the NLS,
I'm shocked.
Speaker 1 (01:47:37):
JP.
Speaker 4 (01:47:38):
You think they can do but.
Speaker 2 (01:47:40):
I'm bullish on them. I think they can do it.
Speaker 3 (01:47:42):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:47:42):
It's not listen by no means. Is this a gimme?
It's not going to be easy.
Speaker 4 (01:47:49):
Yeah, got you.
Speaker 2 (01:47:50):
But I think that when you've got a bullpen that's
as good as theirs, they're going to be able to
preserve leads late and I think that's how you win
games in August and September. So I believe eventually that
will win out. Even though it's been tight to this point,
I think the Padres are gonna have the best finish
over the final two months.
Speaker 4 (01:48:10):
JP.
Speaker 1 (01:48:11):
As always, you are the best of the best, and
that's how we left having you and thank you every
single week. We appreciate We'll do it again next week, JP,
thank you really appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (01:48:20):
Thank you so much for the conversation as always in
the invite, and this is such a great time we
here for sport. Enjoy this great week.
Speaker 1 (01:48:26):
We will do that and of course we'll talk some
college football, because you know he's a Michigan man, to
the course, so that'll be coming up.
Speaker 4 (01:48:32):
Very very shortly.
Speaker 1 (01:48:32):
The great John Paul Morosi. Everyone, now, let's find out
what is trending. And of course she was aghast to
hear that her beloved Dodgers would be overtaken by the Podres,
at least according to JP MORESI, I.
Speaker 10 (01:48:46):
Mean, the Padres were definitely the better team last year,
and they didn't do it, so they could be the
better team many time they want.
Speaker 1 (01:48:52):
Right, well, they did do a lot of the trade deadline,
but at least as now, the Dodgers actually extended.
Speaker 4 (01:48:58):
Early slightly right right right right, uh yeah, you know.
Speaker 10 (01:49:02):
I I the Padres are good, and anyone who says
otherwise is just I can't have a.
Speaker 4 (01:49:06):
Serious when the Al West like taking the West from
you guys.
Speaker 10 (01:49:11):
I just the Dodgers are not great right now, They're
really not. You've talked about Mookie Bets struggling. We didn't
make any gigantic moves ahead of the trade deadline. Obviously,
we're waiting for the pitching staff to come back and
be fully healthy and all that. I just think that
there's a lot of still questions of how the Dodgers
(01:49:33):
are going to perform come playoffs. They're gonna be there,
They're gonna make it to October like that. There's a
question about that. But I do think there's a few
questions of how they're going to perform right now. They
just like don't look as good as they should look,
you know, like.
Speaker 4 (01:49:47):
One of those teams, like I said a few weeks ago,
they know where it takes.
Speaker 2 (01:49:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:49:51):
Well, the idea though, if you're you know, the Sea,
we don't have to have home fis once we get.
Speaker 3 (01:49:56):
To the postseason.
Speaker 1 (01:49:57):
Well, prior to last year's run, the at the back
first round losses, so it's not like they deliver every.
Speaker 10 (01:50:03):
Postseason exactly exactly, and just you know, I sure so many.
There was also so many injuries around with the pitching staff.
Speaker 4 (01:50:10):
But they prevailed and they.
Speaker 1 (01:50:12):
Were one game away from being the limite again the
first round, and they did a bullpen day against.
Speaker 4 (01:50:17):
The pod Race in San Diego.
Speaker 3 (01:50:19):
Yeah, great time shut him out and never looked back.
Speaker 4 (01:50:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:50:21):
Well, you know when when Tattis uh was Fernando Tattoos
stuck his tongue out at the fans out of the dugout,
I think that was the beginning of the end right there.
Speaker 4 (01:50:29):
Also too, I'm not one who cares about two and
three postseasons ago, right baseball what happened and what's going
on right now?
Speaker 10 (01:50:37):
That's you know, And with baseball, I agree with you
wholeheartedly j that, Like, there's no I don't care what
happened last year because baseball isn't like that. The best
team doesn't win, it doesn't necessarily your Rangers literally win
the World Series don't make the postseason the following year.
Speaker 3 (01:50:52):
It's like, it's crazy.
Speaker 10 (01:50:53):
So I agree with you, like who cares it's But yes,
Dodgers are good.
Speaker 4 (01:50:57):
Hopefully they you know, they pull it up hosting and
just like I said, we know what it takes.
Speaker 3 (01:51:02):
They definitely know what it takes.
Speaker 10 (01:51:05):
The Miami Marlins know what it takes. Guys. For the
first time in franchise history, the first time in franchise history,
the Marlins have swept the Yankees.
Speaker 3 (01:51:16):
Wow, okay in a three game series. That's okay.
Speaker 1 (01:51:19):
The Marlins beat the Yankees in a World Worldies.
Speaker 4 (01:51:22):
It's true. That's true.
Speaker 10 (01:51:24):
Marlins without looking to win is when they win. Seven
to three was the final score today. The Dodgers shut
out the Rays three zero twins, held on five to
four against the Guardians. Right now, Brewers are just killing
the Nationals fourteen to one, bottom of the ninth Innian
and the Giants are just killing the Mets twelve to two,
bottom of the ninth starting in New York. Right now,
Cups still edging the Orioles three two bottom of the seventh,
(01:51:46):
Diamondbacks all over the A's three zero, top of the second,
White Sox y'all over the Angels.
Speaker 4 (01:51:50):
We care about that one two four zero after two innings, and.
Speaker 10 (01:51:53):
The Pirates are just the top of the Rockies eight
to one, top of the sixth inning. In the w NBA,
Sabrina Unskhu dropped thirty six points eleven rebounds as a
liberty top the Sun eighty seven to seventy eight. Other
WNBA games going on right now, the Fever are playing
obviously without Caitlin Clark. They're on top of the Storm.
Speaker 4 (01:52:11):
Fifty eight to fifty four after three quarters.
Speaker 10 (01:52:13):
The Dream have a seventy sixty to sixty lead over
the Mystics, still.
Speaker 3 (01:52:16):
Early in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 10 (01:52:18):
In NFL News, he goes wide receiver AJ Brown dealing
with a hamstring injury kept him out of practice today.
Raider safety Lonnie Johnson Junior suffered a broken fibula during
Saturday's practice, and Bill's wide receiver Khalil Shakira is week
to week with the high ankle. Spring running back James
Cook did not participate in practice mandatory practice, and he
told the.
Speaker 3 (01:52:37):
Media that it was because of business.
Speaker 1 (01:52:40):

Speaker 4 (01:53:42):
They'll be coming on at the top of the hour.
Speaker 3 (01:53:45):
Chris. It's got a lot of projects in the works.
Speaker 4 (01:53:48):
These days, a lot of projects in it works. So
that's good.
Speaker 11 (01:53:51):
It's been like, you gotta stay busy on the summer,
otherwise you're just gonna like just run around in a
circle in the same room.
Speaker 1 (01:53:56):
But h yeah, mister Purfet mentioning many trips he wanted
to take, but with the busyness coming up of the
football season, they'll have to wait another day.
Speaker 13 (01:54:05):
And the nurse Shay, Shay, are you are you relieved
about the Lucadancic situation that he's under lock and key
now not going to go.
Speaker 4 (01:54:17):
I wasn't even I wasn't even worried. You don't worry
about We talked about that, Sha was now none of us,
none of us were. I think you were the only
one thought. I knew Lebron was going to be a Laker.
I knew Luca was going to say, we're not there yet.
Speaker 1 (01:54:30):
I'm saying that about it, you know, you know what,
you know, its not acknowledged that he's a Laker, at
least under contract, as the Lakers haven't. They haven't said
anything about his well so called picking up his option.
Speaker 9 (01:54:41):
Rob was asked yesterday about Lebron and that he'll play it.
He was kind of like, iff, you we actually have
the audience.
Speaker 2 (01:54:49):
Let's hear.
Speaker 1 (01:54:49):
Let's hear the audience exactly what he had to say
when asked about Lebron James, Rob Plink.
Speaker 3 (01:54:55):
Let's hear what he had to say.
Speaker 14 (01:54:56):
All the interactions we've had with Lebron and his camp
in particular have been positive and supportive, so very professional
and rich has been great. The dialogue with him has
been open and constant. In terms of Lebron's career, I
think the number one thing we have to do there
is respect he and his family's decision in terms of
how long he's going to play. We want to respect
(01:55:18):
his ability to come up with his timetable on that.
I think that's that's really important. But if you had
a chance to retire a Laker, that would be great.
Speaker 3 (01:55:26):
Okay that is can you only what he just said there?
Speaker 4 (01:55:29):
Worried did you hear did you hear a keyword? Yeah?
I know I'm asking not now you not don't say
does Steve? Did you hear the keyword there? Shade isn't?
What was the keyword? If?
Speaker 2 (01:55:39):
Okay?
Speaker 4 (01:55:41):
If okay?
Speaker 5 (01:55:42):
When people start saying, if homie.
Speaker 4 (01:55:46):
It's over.
Speaker 9 (01:55:46):
But also if he was to say when Lebron retires
a Laker, it's like the media would.
Speaker 4 (01:55:51):
Go Rob no, no, no, no, no no no no,
he doesn't you know, no he doesn't. If he said when,
that means he believes in self that he will okay,
he said if, which means their talks and rumblings that Bro,
they're trying not to make it ugly. That's why he
just said what he said. The communication has been great,
(01:56:13):
Rich and the Cruiseman. He's not trying to make it
ugly and muddy the way Lebron already tried to it
the Summer League by saying I ain't got nothing to.
Speaker 3 (01:56:22):
Say, understand, trying to get out of him.
Speaker 2 (01:56:25):
Bro.
Speaker 1 (01:56:25):
Mark Walter is now running the show. Thank okay, And
so the idea that they did not offer him an extension,
they didn't. If he had been offer an extension, he
would have signed an extension. Right, all he did was
pick up his own player option, which he had control of.
They did not offer this idea that will well, we
want to respect his family's wishes on how he will,
(01:56:46):
how long he wants to play.
Speaker 3 (01:56:47):
They didn't say played with the Lakers.
Speaker 1 (01:56:49):
And then all he said was he goes, yeah, it'd
be nice if he, you know, finished as a Laker.
So it would seem that Lebron doesn't want to end
his career this year, meaning that he has won last
year as a Laker. If and only if he will
comply with the wishes now of one Lukadancic. Lukadancic will say,
here's how I see you fitting in with his team.
Speaker 2 (01:57:11):
Can you do that?
Speaker 1 (01:57:12):
If you can, I believe we can make a championship run.
And he has never answered to anybody, so that's the
big question. We still have a couple of months, so
we'll see how.
Speaker 4 (01:57:21):
This place out. Well, we'll see what happens. Yeah, I
just I know for a fact, I've been told by
people in house covering the team this year, and people
I trust, they're trying. They just don't want to make
it ugly, Shay, and I get it. I wouldn't want
to make it ugly either. I would want it to
be professional, Like just go back and listen to that
sound by brob is telling you guys, communication has been great.
(01:57:43):
They've been very professional, basically saying, look, we're not gonna
try to make this ugly as much as you guys
want to try to make it look ugly and muddy,
because that's what the media does.
Speaker 9 (01:57:53):
Right, You're right about that bar inst tipton around it.
That's what it means. We're talking about it all. We're
gonna talk about this next hour.
Speaker 4 (01:57:59):
And I'll listen to it on the Rye home as
I always do. But when you use the word if,
and he's a man that knows how to choose his words, he's.
Speaker 3 (01:58:08):
Very good at it, very good at it. And he
made sure if he.
Speaker 4 (01:58:12):
Retires as a Laker, that will, which means listen, if
we can, if we can get moved on from him
and Bill for the future. Signing Luca to this three
year Dylan Steve made a point in the show that
I agree with, but I have to hear more about it.
Luca does not sign this deal unless it's understood that
(01:58:33):
I run the show now, I'm the guy.
Speaker 5 (01:58:35):
He knew that when he got here.
Speaker 4 (01:58:36):
That was never an issue.
Speaker 3 (01:58:37):
No, he did not know that because Lebron James was
running the show.
Speaker 4 (01:58:43):
To run the show though you think he wants wants
to show.
Speaker 1 (01:58:51):
He has run the show his entire careers at this point,
but he be forced to. Hey, come on, this idea
that he didn't want to run the show. Come on,
you know that to take a back seat. He wanted
to retire.
Speaker 3 (01:59:08):
Lebron is, however, taking a seat in his entire life
and he never will.
Speaker 4 (01:59:13):
Do you really believe what you're saying he's taking a
back you really just.
Speaker 6 (01:59:19):
Lebron.
Speaker 4 (01:59:19):
Lebron's going to take a back back to do I
mean a d That was the whole plan.
Speaker 9 (01:59:24):
Eighty comes with me Little Lakers and I take a
back to Ad wasn't able to I'm not saying that
he did, but Ady wasn't able to do what Lebron
wanted to.
Speaker 4 (01:59:34):
Wow, Okay, this was the thing that everyone didn't. I
didn't think you were that etherizedment. Here's a guy.
Speaker 1 (01:59:41):
But by the way, in seven years with Little Lakers,
five years of either a first round loss or no playoffs,
that's his legacy, that's that's him.
Speaker 3 (01:59:49):
Black and White. I can't change you can't change that. Okay,
all right?
Speaker 1 (01:59:53):
A couple of quickly games that we're going to watch
this week, a preseason. One of one of them My
interested is, uh Pete Carrol's first game as a Raider
on the road against the Seahawks and they go to Seattle.
Speaker 3 (02:00:04):
Yeah, out there, that's gonna be very interesting.
Speaker 1 (02:00:07):
I as we get closer to making picks for the season,
I can just tell you out of the box, Pete Carroll.
You know, remember Chip Kelly is now the new offensive coordinator.
He's brought his old quarterback with him, Gino Smith. They
got Ashton Genty. I think the Raiders are going to
be better than people think.
Speaker 4 (02:00:22):
The other game vision is just so nasty. It is nasty.
Speaker 3 (02:00:26):
Broncos could be on the on the verge of a
real breakout season. I can tell you that much.
Speaker 1 (02:00:31):
And then we'll see Shidor Sanders making his debut in
the prese on the road against Carolina and the Panthers.
Who's gonna get Who's gonna throw more passes him or
Dylan Gabriel in this game?
Speaker 4 (02:00:42):
Or will it be equal time or will one be
favored over the other time?
Speaker 5 (02:00:46):
I don't know who gets to throw more passes.
Speaker 4 (02:00:50):
M h, there'll be one of the other that'll be.
That's because they're not calling their own plays. Nope, somebody
else is going to be calling the place for them.
Speaker 1 (02:00:59):
So I think it'll be already even I would imagine,
why would you wait, why would you waste any time?
Speaker 3 (02:01:04):
Just give each a half.
Speaker 4 (02:01:05):
Because this thing has been a you know what show
from the get go.
Speaker 1 (02:01:08):
Man. Well, I mean yeah, but if you're Cleveland, you
need to have some resolve at least between these two.
Speaker 4 (02:01:15):
It's smart man.
Speaker 1 (02:01:17):
Yeah, all right, So we'll see how that plays out
that game coming up on the flood.
Speaker 4 (02:01:23):
Everybody, don't go anywhere.
Speaker 1 (02:01:24):
Monsie and Carrie will take you next coming up right
here in Fox Sports Radio.
