Speaker 1 (00:00):
Everybody, Fox Sports Radio, Fox Sports Saturday Air Tours, Jason Martin,
we are broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio studios.
Plenty of NFL preseason to get to, plenty of college
football to look ahead to. By the way, j mart
when we get on air next week, there will be
(00:22):
college football, like real games that matter, not not this
preseason Trey Lance nonsense, Like real games that really matter.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
In the Great Slate. But yes, well you gotta.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Talk about Iowa State Kansas State like that.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
I mean, it's not saying we're I mean, we're nuts,
so we're gonna watch that, but I mean we gotta
we gotta couch it just a little bit. I can't
let down my expectations. My expectations need to be where
they should be. But yes, we are gonna have real
football toccounts which it which is a special thing.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Listen, you can't watch Week one, so you gotta soak
up Iowa State Kansas State like it's LSU Clemson in Miami,
Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Bro I did realize, however, all right, so the way
this whole thing sets up, Friday, not gonna get to
see anything but Saturday. I'm done with what I have
to do by five. Okay, So basically I'm gonna be
on the road, but I'm gonna be in a hotel
so I will be able to watch some games Saturday night, thankfully,
And then Sunday We're gonna be probably in a hotel
Sunday evening, not trying to make the entire drive back.
(01:23):
We'll probably come back on Monday or finish the drive
on Monday, so I'll be able to watch the Sunday
night game, most likely from a hotel as well. So
I realize now I'm gonna get to see more of
this than I originally thought, and look that for me
that counts. Maybe I'm not gonna miss it at all, thankfully.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Yeah, we found out last week j Mart unfortunately as
a conflict on Labor Day weekend, so he will not
be with us two Saturdays from now. I assume it'll
be either already span her Chris blank in with me.
I'll be watching it. I did get the whole today
from the wife. Oh are we do anything day? Family
wants to know. I was like, yeah, no, I'm pretty
(02:03):
booked from Labor Day on until just to like just
till like February and of March. You know, no big
deal other than that. So so she she's she's pretty
good though she got it. She may be away, so
it might be torres ryding solo Labor Day weekends. So
it might even be watching more football than I was anticipating.
But two weeks from today, week one week zero is
(02:24):
a week from today, NFL preseason is still going on.
I just want to hit out some news and notes
from Saturday. We are not gonna overreact, we are not
gonna anoint anyone anything, but there were half a dozen
or so games and just want to kind of get
your take on a few things. J Mart I think
probably the biggest story I would argue from the day
(02:50):
might not be a story at all. It might be
a story.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Kelsey Plumb.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Oh, I don't know what she do.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Oh she said that what she said about Kaitlyn Clark
and that All Star post game press conference steel was
just this a joke that went wrong. Trying to explain
I'm always trying to create levity in the situation.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
It's amazing how the jokes that go wrong are only
directed at Cato Clark.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Yeah, a lot of them, doesn't it. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
And John Matteer's Venmo account but that's another conversation for
another day.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
That's good.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Well, we'll save John Matteer's Venmo for hour four. I'll
say this really quick on MATEI, because it's not a
topic whatever. I am kind of amazed in this like
world where we take everything sports betting so seriously that
it was just immediately brushed off and like, oh yeah,
nothing happened here, nothing to see, We're good now. Maybe
it was because it feels like it was probably if
(03:39):
it was even a bet, a bet between two buddies,
like you know, over beers on the couch, that probably
isn't traceable. I just thought it was interesting, like this
crazy world that we live in where we where we
are so hyper vigilant on all things betting, we know
about you know, the John Tay Porters and the Malik
Beasley's and whatever. It was just like, oh yeah, no,
(04:00):
that was nothing, nothing to see here. We're moving, you know,
we're on to northern illinoisor whoever. We got weak ones.
So I don't know, if you we don't have to
talk about it, but I was just kind of surprised
that it just was a thing and then it just
immediately wasn't a thing. What other conversation.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
God, look, man, I mean some stories, some stories are
just not not things you talk about in in certain company,
and in this case that means any company like that.
This one we need to find a way to sweep
underneath the rug and then hope that the rug is
big enough to hold under Yeah. That it just what
it felt like to me. This one just felt like, Hey, man,
(04:34):
we're gonna since the Naked Gun reboot just came out,
We're gonna go full Leslie Nielson and say.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Nothing to see here, keep it moving, yes.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Move along while everything's going on in the background.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
That's exactly what it felt like to me. So I
don't think there's much else to add, because Oklahoma and
all the powers that be have made it clear that
there's nothing else to add. But thought it was a
little interesting that there just wasn't a story, even though
it feels like maybe should have been a little bit.
Here's my question, is Matthew Stafford's back a story to you?
Speaker 2 (05:05):
J Marts.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
I'll be quick on this, but there was supposed to
be a pregame workout. We know he hasn't been practicing.
A RAMS official would not confirm if it did or
did not happen. But Stafford's not practicing. He's certainly not
playing in these preseason games. In your mind, big deal,
little deal, no deal for you.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
This is something between deal and big deal for me
because of his age and because of the wear and
tear on his body. The reason why I went under
with the Rams, at least I think I went under
with the Rams, was because I'm just not sold that
Matthew Stafford can get through the entire season. And even
(05:48):
if we do see Jimmy g and maybe he's going
to be just fine running that offense, it's going to
be different. I just I feel like it's going to
be kind of This is why I told Brian No
we were in for two pros and a couple of
Joe on Thursday. I said, he's going to be perpetually questionable. Yeah,
I feel like all season long. I think he'll go
(06:08):
when he can, and I mean, he's always been a warrior,
but he's just getting older man, and I feel like
his body this year is not something that can be
dependent upon if you're a Rams fan, And that's one
of the reasons why I just don't think they're going
to end up being the factor that maybe they could be. Otherwise,
I think this matters. I do that not because he's
(06:30):
missing practice time, just because I feel like this is
more kind of the foreshadowing of what's coming in the season.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
The other thing that's interesting to me about Stafford, correct
me if I'm wrong. It was this. It was this
past offseason, like the last six to eight months, where
there was like, oh, could Stafford leave and like go
to the Giants? That was this offseason, right, like that
was the last couple months. Yeah, I think it was, yeah, yeah,
And what that kind of said to me at the
time and certainly now is at like the Rams clearly
(07:02):
want him, but it also feels like they want him
under it's not unconditional, right, Like the Chiefs are like
unconditionally in love with Patrick Mahomes, the Bills with Josh Allen,
the Ravens with Lamar Jackson, whatever. It feels like there
are conditions to Matthew Stafford, which is, we still want you,
(07:23):
but we're not committing to you long term. We're not
committing crazy amounts of money, certainly over the long term.
So that's another variable with Stafford as well as I
think to your point, I think the Rams are smart
enough to understand even if he is good for this year,
at that age, this is just not a guy that
you could commit to for three or four years. And
(07:43):
so I'm with you. It does feel to me like
like it's not everything. But I just don't think at
this point you could say it's nothing solely because of
his age and where he's at at this point in
his career.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Yeah, I mean it's it's unfortunate for the Rams, but
I think they to your point, I think they sort
of know. I think they are going to cross their
fingers and hope that this thing works out the way
that they wanted to. But I just feel like, I
think if he plays twelve games, I'll be surprised throughout
the course of the season. And I hope he plays.
(08:17):
I hope he plays them all. I hope we're not
going to be I hope I'm going to be as
wrong about this as I possibly could be. I just
feel like he's going to be battling different little things
all season long. I don't think it's all going to
be the back. I think there's going to be a
finger at some point. He's dealt with that a few
times where he's throwing the football and hit a helmet.
I can see that happening again this year. There's just
(08:38):
I just feel like he's I wouldn't call it brittle,
but it's just eventually age gets you. And this is
a guy who, remember in Detroit, got battered and brutalized
year after year after year after year, and the wear
and tear on that body is going to add up.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
Let me ask you this, Let's switch gears. I just
mentioned Stafford was linked to the Giants in the offseas,
he ended up with the Rams. The Giants, of course,
I have the quarterback triumvirent Of Russell Wilson, Jamis Winston,
and of course the rookie quarterback Jackson Dart. They all
played on Saturday Night, most notably Jackson Dart fourteen of
(09:14):
sixteen passing one hundred and thirty seven yards, one touchdown.
This after a game earlier in the preseason where he
put up, you know, relatively similar stats. As far as
a preseason is concerned to you, does any of this matter?
Is it important? Is it only the quote unquote Coote preseason?
(09:36):
Does none of it matter? Jackson Dart looking pretty good
through two preseason games?
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Well, I mean, you do have to couch it to
some extent, but at the same time, sure it matters
a little bit. It doesn't matter for rookie quarterbacks, especially
guys that you know they have veterans in front of them,
so they don't have to start immediately. But obviously he
can harm himself and he goes out there and looks terrible,
and he hasn't done that yet. He looks in command
(10:00):
and looks like he could potentially take over that role
maybe fairly quickly looking at the season, Like if I'm
looking at their regular season schedule right now, just when
I wanted to ballpark it without looking at the schedule,
I said sometime between Halloween and Thanksgiving, I could see
him taking that job. But I don't know exactly when
(10:22):
that would be unless you were thinking, because you're going
to start him at home, you would think in the
first game, and they're just kind of on the road
throughout a lot of they're at Philly. Then they have
San Francisco at home on November second. That seems like
maybe not one you would do. And then you go
to the Bears, and then maybe you bring in Green
Bay on the sixteenth. Maybe that's it. Maybe it's November
(10:44):
sixteenth against Green Bay. I don't know, maybe it's even
sooner than that, but I do think it matters in
for the quarterback position looking at it because you know
that Russell Wilson is there to hand that baton off.
The question is just win and if Dart shows that
there is some connection with some of the guys he's
(11:06):
throwing to, then you have to take You have to
take that, and then you have to add to it
what he's doing in practice. You got to look at
what the reporters are saying and what's coming out of camp,
how he is, how he was doing there, and then
you have to start noticing, you know, is he getting
some stuff with the with the ones at any point
in time? And if he is and he starts to
succeed there, then that's good. But everything that you've seen
(11:29):
thus far has indicated that Jackson Dart is looking like
the real deal.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Yeah, looking good. I'm with you. I think you you
even said it last week. Is you know it's gonna
be you know, probably not by like like it could
be by the end of week one that Giants fans
are already over the Russell Wilson experience and so I
just think this team is going to be bad enough.
Dable and Shane are obviously kind of working for their jobs.
(11:56):
Dable coaching for his job, and uh, you know, the
thing that you always can use when you're coaching for
your job is selling hope for the future. So I
would expect him to be in actually pretty early for
that exact reason, because again, you're trying to coach for
your future and put yourself in a position to keep
your job beyond this year very quickly. Do want to
(12:17):
wrap our kind of whip around On Saturday with the
Cleveland Browns playing the Philadelphia Eagles. Noteworthy here, Shador Sanders
did not play with that oblique injury. Dylan Gabriel was back, though,
coming off of the hamstring injury from a few weeks ago.
We'll talk about the performance in a minute. I want
(12:37):
to play you two pieces of sound. The first one
him on the sidelines, asked about blocking out the noise
during the QB competition.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
You know, there's entertainers and there's competitors, and I totally
understand that, and my job is to compete, and that's
what I'm focused on doing. Of course, we're doing this
big game, but you know, it's something that I'll get
used to and just want to be the best team
that I can and create an environment where we can
all go do our best work.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
That's all we want to do.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
So that was Dylan Gabriel courtesy the NFL Network during
the game. There's entertainers and there are competitors. Certainly kind
of sounded like Dylan Gabriel's former college coach Dan Landing
when he when he talked about uh, Colorado and you
know their their Hollywood were you know whatever. Well, I
bring it up because certainly there were some people that
(13:26):
thought that that might have been a dig at Shador Sanders.
Dylan Gabriel. The sound here isn't great, but did address
if that was a dig at any specific teammates after
the game?
Speaker 2 (13:37):
All about our team, you know what I mean, in
each other.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
I would never make that, and I've said it before
that why it's it's interesting. But for me, it's I've
explained that entertainers are you all competitor That's what I
am and all my teammates and we both have jobs
to do. So that's it.
Speaker 1 (13:55):
The big deal. Let's stick with the big deal, little deal,
no deal theme and I'll just jump on this QUI
I didn't actually perceive it as that way, and I
think either, Yeah, and I think social media took it
that way. I mean, the dude's doing an interview in
the middle of a game, Like, I don't think he's
purposefully like thought out the digs to take at his
(14:16):
his you know, teammates or whatever. So to me, it
wasn't a big deal. And it sounds like to you
as much the same.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
Yeah, I mean, I feel like there's a lot more
important things for Dylan Gabriel right now than worrying about,
you know, coming up with the right clip for his
teammate to try and like dig at him like that
just doesn't make any sense. Like I look at it
from a logical standpoint, like there would be moments where
you could hear that later on and maybe read it
(14:45):
that way, but I don't think so right now. I mean,
these guys are in a hot competition to win jobs.
I don't think they have time to be burying one another,
you know what I'm saying, Like it just that reads wrong.
Plus it's just not really been in Dylan Gabriel's character
to be a guy that would do something like that, Like,
I don't know that. I don't know why you would
need to. Like, all he has to do is go
do is job, which is I have never gotten the
(15:07):
sense that that's that there's anything other than that on
his mind. To your point about Lanning, Yeah, like Landing
saying there for clicks where for wins? You know, that's
that was a different kind of deal. And it was
in you know, a pregame to psych up the team
and all of that kind of thing. This would have this,
this not only would have been sort of out of
character for Dylan Gabriel, the timing of it just makes
(15:28):
no sense. So no, I don't buy it.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
Yeah, we could go on and on, but it was
something that certainly made the rounds over the course of
the day. Today, I don't take it that way either,
By the way, J mart Dylan Gabriel thirteen of eighteen,
one hundred and forty three yards, no touchdowns, one interception.
Did that Did that performance move the needle for you
one way or the other?
Speaker 2 (15:49):
No? I mean he did do some good things, but
he also he had the interception it was his fault,
and the fumble on a handoff or on a snap
one was credited to him as well, So kind of
a you had some up moments and then you had
some down moments, which I mean, that's gonna be the
case for a lot of these guys in this spot.
You don't want to overreact to the greatest stuff or
(16:13):
the worst stuff. I think you just kind of have
to sort of keep a balance on it. And there's
gonna be some wins and some losses when you look
at each individual play for a guy like Dylan Gabriel
at this point, and that's that's just the I think
that's just the mark of the preseason.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
Absolutely, So Dylan Gabriel did play, Shdor Sanders didn't. And Yeah,
plenty of other news and notes from the NFL that
we'll get to throughout the show. By the way, Rams
are currently in the postgame media availability right now, so
we're monitoring to see if there's anything interesting on Matthew Stafford.
We will continue the conversation on the NFL coming up.
(16:49):
But I'll tell you what, Jay Bart, that's what we
gotta do. We gotta switch gears. We gotta talk. So
Michigan Wolverines, Okay, they certainly were in the headlines, probably
for all the wrong reasons. On Friday. What does it mean?
What does it not mean? That's next? Aer Tors Jason Martin.

By the way, we are monitoring postgame sound from LA
see if there's any updates on Matthew Stafford, Aubrey Pleasant,
who was actually the acting head coach this evening, Aubrey Pleasant.
(18:41):
You know, Sean McVay likes to kind of give his
assistant coaches opportunities to basically serve essentially as a head coach.
During the preseason, he was the acting head coach. He
is doing the media availability. He did say that Sean
McVay would address Matthew Stafford on Monday, essentially. I don't
know that's really an update, J Martin. I think it's
(19:02):
just more of a you know, like, hey, I'm not
the head coach, so I'm not gonna be saying anything
about this that I shouldn't. But you know, this feels
like a story that's going to kind of continue to
progress over the course of the over the summer into
week one. I'm with you. I don't think it's nothing
until otherwise. And then to your point that you said earlier,
(19:23):
even if he gets on the field, then I think
we all obviously expect him to be on the field
even when he does get on the field is probably
the right way to say it. I think in his age,
with the history of injuries, that he has probably a
little bit unrealistic to expect him to play all seventeen
regular season games this year.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
Yeah, again, hope to be wrong, but that's just I
feel like that's the most likely outcome likely scenario. I
don't expect us to get much even on Monday from McVeigh.
I imagine they'll keep it fairly close to the vest
I mean, they'll they'll be truthful about it, but I
don't think they're going to overstate anything that's happening there.
I think it's I think we're just gonna have to
(20:01):
My assumption is just gonna be he's not gonna be
one hundred percent, and he isn't now. I don't think
he will be by week one either. And I'm not
even saying it'll just be the back or whatever like that.
I just I feel like by the time we get
to the regular season, it's still gonna be one of
those where you're just never gonna be quite sure.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
Let's move on to the story of the day. On Friday,
we got a resolution. It's a frankly a story. I
don't know where the public stands on this. I feel
like everyone's kind of been over it for a while,
but I could be wrong, And there were certainly a
lot of emotions when this was announced on Friday. But Michigan,
(20:38):
of course, if you remember two seasons ago, wins the
National Championship. Right in the middle of the year, we
learned the name Connor Stallions, not even like an assistant coach,
just kind of a guy on staff that was, you know,
traveling to opposing venues and taping games. Rules were broken.
He was fired, Jim Harbaugh was suspended during the season.
(21:00):
Michigan goes on to win the National Championship even amidst
the investigation. Bring it up because we got closure on Friday.
Michigan smacked with major fines, you know, twenty to thirty
million dollar range, But the National Championship won't be vacated.
And also, yeah, national championship won't be vacated. And you
(21:21):
know there it is worth noting by the way, Jim Harbaugh,
you know, wink wink not nod, given a ten year
show cause, which basically means he's not allowed to coach
in college football for ten years. I don't think there
is any world where he was ever coming back to
college football as it is. I certainly got takes on this, Jmart,
but I want to give you the floor reaction to
Michigan with a lot of fines, but obviously no postseason bands,
(21:45):
no scholarship bands, and most importantly, no one is claiming
that they did not win that twenty twenty three twenty
twenty four national championship.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
Yeah. So I'm just kind of blown away with some
of the writing and like how this has been talked
about today, in particular, just over this last twenty four
hour span or so. It seems like a lot of
pretty big name reporters are just trying to come take
(22:15):
their pound of flesh at Jim Harball left and right
right now.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
I agree, I'm.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Kind of shocked by it, especially with where college football
finds itself now and just the history of the sport
and all this kind of stuff. It's like everybody is
almost reveling in the NCAA of all things, coming out
and levying this against Michigan, and here comes probably a
thirty million dollar fine and probably should have been postseason banned,
(22:44):
and all this other kind of stuff that's coming through.
And you know, Stallions is obviously a nefarious character and
also not a particularly smart one based on just how
much they were able to find here and all this
stuff and the Charon War thing, it doesn't matter that
much just because you look at the three game. I'm
just gonna miss He's gonna be all right, Michigan's probably
likely to be fine in those situations as well. I'm
(23:08):
just I was very much I felt like you were
much more on the Michigan side of things originally than
I was. And as we've gotten further into this, and
maybe it's just because of where college football is now
even than when we were first talking about this, I
have gotten to where I'm almost just shrugging my shoulders,
(23:28):
like I don't care like this, this this whole thing
just feels like it was blown way out of proportion,
Like why are we blowing it out of proportion? Now?
Like you know, Stuart Mandel says Michigan loses its integrity.
That's the headline of what he's saying. And Ian O'Connor
went even further with just kind of almost like laughing
(23:49):
at Jim Harbaugh and talking about how he always loved
John Moore. It's like, what are we doing here, Guys,
Like I don't I don't understand this at all, and like, aha,
he can't coach in college football again until he's seventy four,
a lifetime ban. It's like, Okay, good for you. That's great.
They still won that title. They're not taking it away.
They're not vacating any wins. Thirty million dollars is a
(24:12):
drop in the bucket for Michigan. They I think it's
like over two hundred and fifty million dollars a year
that they are bringing in. So I don't think the
thirty mil is going to break the bank or anything
like that. Sure, they'd probably not like to pay it,
but essentially it means virtually nothing in the end. Actually,
when I first read it and I saw thirty million dollars,
(24:32):
I'm like, man, that was worth every penny. Oh yeah,
you know what I'm saying, Like eve worst case scenario,
right that they completely let's just obviously go further than
any evidence would show and just say they cheated completely
throughout that whole deal and all they got Slaptos was
thirty mil and their coach is already in the NFL
in the job that he already wanted anyway, but you
(24:54):
got your championship out of it, like and basically flip
the script on Ohio State for a few years on
the way, Like, Yeah, I think that was probably worth
that juice was worth the Connor Stallion squeeze, quite frankly,
is how it comes across. But I just and I'm
I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say
about this. I'm just kind of blown away by just
the level of sanctimony that I am seeing from sports media,
(25:20):
sports reporters, sports especially just a lot of article writers,
a lot of big names. There's just a lot of
sanctimonious drivel coming out about this that really rubs me
the wrong way.
Speaker 1 (25:31):
Yeah, so I actually agree with that. That's actually been
a little bit of a surprise to me. Is I
thought it was like, oh, none of us care about
the NCAA. And I'll also just say this, and apparently
I was wrong. I thought we all kind of just
agreed I think two things. And by the way, there's
a great Joel Klatt video that that surfaces on social
(25:54):
media that that I don't know exactly what the caption
would be, but he basically explained and time he's like, look,
war rules broken, yes, but he's like some of these people,
you know, if you understand. Like the point that he made,
and I think he was right, was that basically, the
less you know about football, the bigger of a deal
(26:15):
it feels. And he just used the example. He's like,
I see people breaking down this clip and it's like
it's third and eleven and Michigan knew a pass was coming.
And it's like, yeah, they knew a pass was coming
because it was third and eleven. It wasn't because they
had like, you know, the whole playbook on their wristband,
you know. And so I feel like we I thought
during that season it was a big thing in the moment,
(26:40):
and I even remember coming on with you. I think
it was Michigan State, maybe that they played right out
of the by or maybe it was right I can't remember,
but I remember it felt really big and then they
came out of a by kicked the crap out of everybody.
And then most notably they beat Penn State Ohio State
one without Jim Harbaugh, and then two they beat him.
(27:03):
Period three they go to the playoff and beat Alabama
and Washington. These are all games after Connor Stallions had
been fired, and so I felt like in real time
everybody was kind of over it in real time, like, Okay,
it felt big in the moment, and I'm sure you
can probably find clips of me the show we did
(27:24):
after the first report came out saying it's a huge deal,
and then you kind of start to realize to some
degree everybody's stealing signs. And two, their four biggest wins
came without this supposed huge secret weapon that they had,
And it turns out, oh, by the way, they were
just a freaking awesome football team. Thirteen guys drafted off
(27:45):
of that team, by the way, what three more in
the first round this year? We had Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant,
and Coleston Lovelin, so three more. Will Johnson would have
been a fourth one if he hadn't been hurt all seasons.
So essentially it was just a great team. It felt
like in the moment we all acknowledged Okay, it felt big,
but when you beat Penn State, Ohio State, Alabama, Washington
(28:08):
two of those games without your head coach, then it's
just that you're a really good football team. And then
I felt like, I guess it would have been middle
of the week when you start to hear there's some
punishment coming. We reverted back to the day that the
report came out and started acting like it was the
biggest deal again. So I guess to your point, I
was absolutely surprised by the reaction because I feel like
(28:31):
even people that covered the sport kind of just didn't
think it was a big deal when it was all
said and done. And lastly, what I would say is,
and I think this is important. I think it's a
huge piece of this that nobody talks about. You could say, oh,
the punishment whatever, blah blah blah. But what is always
the punishment, Jame, What is always the complaint about these
punishments for college football? It's that, oh, you break a rule,
(28:55):
you get to do whatever, and then you're punished four
or five years down the road, and it has no
wat in real time. Well, never forget the Big ten
made the literal, unprecedented decision during the season without an
investigation to suspend Jim Harball for three games, which happened
(29:16):
to be the three biggest games of the year. So like,
to me, they already had an extreme punishment in real
time that no one talks about and they survive that
and whatever. So that's a long winded way of me saying, yes,
I'm surprised by the reaction. By the way, the NCAA
was never vacating the national championship. It just was never
(29:38):
gonna happen. They were never giving out a postseason ban
because they've said publicly they don't do that anymore. So like, yeah,
I think a fine when you factor in that Jim
Harball was suspended for the three biggest games of the year,
it seems fine to me. It seems like more than enough.
But again, yeah, I think to me, your point is
well taken. Is that my biggest surprise is that is
(30:01):
the reaction to it. I don't know just the reaction
to it. And I'll toss it back to you. We
got to be quick because we got to get to
brief for the update. But any final thoughts, and by
the way, you know, I'll tell you what, j Mart,
why don't we come back. We'll continue this conversation after breaks.
I think there's more meat on the bone. But before
we do it, though, let's get to what's trending. Apparently
(30:22):
Arnie gave Disager the night off, so Bree Moro is
in for Disagre. Just kidding. Disager will be in before
the end of our show. Brie, what is trending here
at eleven thirty eight Eastern Time on a Saturday.
Speaker 7 (30:34):
Alrighty guys, So the last scheme of Week two the
NFL preseason. The Broncos are on top of the Cardinals
twenty four to seven. Jarrett Sidham and Troy Franklin have
connected twice for two touchdowns, so that's good. Earlier, Stetson
Bennett showed out for the Rams and they defeated the
Chargers twenty three to twenty two, just ten seconds left
(30:56):
to go in the game, an eight yard touchdown pass
to True Edward Wards. Stetson Bennett finished twenty eight to
forty three hundred and twenty four yards, three touchdowns, and
one pick. The Giants defeated the Jets thirty one to twelve.
Jackson Dart looked great fourteen to sixteen, one hundred and
thirty seven yards and one touchdown. The Ravens beat the
(31:16):
Cowboys thirty one at thirteen, and it's just it's amusing
that the Cowboys offense wasn't really involved. But Brent Brandon
Aubrey made up seven of those points Andrew Booth with
the pick six Cowboys offense zero points. So that's very
typical Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
I don't think that's the last time we're going to
get some sort of stat like that throughout this Yeah.
Speaker 7 (31:36):
Yeah, well also, and then Cooper Rush like kind of
how the like, you know, ex girlfriend kind of vibe
came in sure, So he looked at twentyeth third well decent.
Cooper Rush looked good as he could look twenty at
thirty one hundred and ninety eight yards, two touchdowns and
one interception. Joe Milton looked pretty rough nine to eighteen,
one hundred and twenty two yards and one pick. In
(31:56):
Major League Baseball, the Dodgers are shutting out the padre
Is six to zero, top of the ninth inning.
Speaker 1 (32:02):
The Brewers set a.
Speaker 7 (32:03):
Franchise record with fourteen consecutive wins after beating the Reds
and extra inning six to five, and the Braves have
won four straight after they defeated the Cardinals ten to one.
Speaker 1 (32:13):
Back to you guys, Thank you very much, Brie. We
appreciate your help. De Sega will be in at some
point this evening. He of course, was covering the Rams
Chargers game at SOFI Stadium. Tell you what, Ja mart
coming up, we will continue the conversation on Michigan. I
went long. I couldn't shut up, but I want to
hear what you have to say about what I had
(32:33):
to say. That's next.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radios.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
Fox Sports Radio, Welcome back everybody. Fox Sports Radio Air
tours Jason Martin broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio
studios for the best pregame show every weekend. Be sure

all of the biggest games. Tune into Countdown presented by
bet MGM every Saturday and Sunday morning right here on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app. So, Jay
mart I went a little long. I apologize talking Michigan.
(33:22):
So obviously the news coming out on Friday that Michigan's
Michigan has been fined thirty million dollars for the counter
Stallions sign stealing scandal. Jim Harbaugh also hit with a
ten year ban from coaching college football. He was never
coming back, but the banner isn't coming down, wins aren't
(33:43):
being vacated, no postseason bands, and it seems like, you know, listen,
who knows how what percentage, but I think there is
a percentage of fans that are upset that more wasn't done.
I think both of us feel like the biggest surprise
has been sanctimonious reaction from some of the media. So
(34:03):
I'll kind of give you the floor because I am
surprised by the reaction from the people and you know this, Yeah,
it's just it's just been a weird vibe. I'll go
ahead and give you the floor.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
Yeah, I mean, you know, we've we know some of
these people or we have you know, talked to them
through the years and things like that. But like, I
just felt like this story sort of had run its course.
I agree, and that's why it kind of surprised me.
It almost tells me there's not anything else going on. Sure,
(34:36):
it almost tells me that some people needed something and
so they are just salivating. Like sometimes my dog, you know,
she just it doesn't even matter what I tried to
give her. It doesn't matter. She just needed something. Like
it might even be something that she might I don't know.
I think she might like every food. I don't think
(34:57):
I've ever seen her turn anything down. But at the
same time, like there's a difference between the thing I
know she absolutely loves, like her dessert treat or whatever,
her vanilla ice cream, and like, I don't know, something
completely random, and this just felt like, yeah, this was
like some stale toast or something like that, but still
(35:19):
just lapped it up because had to have something. There
was meat on this bone, so we had to just
go ahead and pick it dry it just like I haven't.
I didn't see this kind of energy even originally when
this story was going on, Like I saw it like
the first couple of weeks as we talked about but
as it kept on playing out, like when the Connor
Stallion's documentary came out, I didn't see this kind of energy.
(35:41):
I didn't see any of that kind of stuff. So
and that's over a year old, so now all of
a sudden, this pops out on you know, August fifteenth
or whatever, and now everybody is writing as if finally
they got him, Like like I don't get it, Like
it just doesn't make sense, Like there's not there's not
been a consistency in how this has been covered, applied,
(36:04):
reported on, talked about any of that. So I kind
of I attributed. When I first saw that this was
coming out on Friday, I was like, I kind of
even I just sort of rolled my eyes as a
sort of a nothing burger at this point, like Harbaugh's
already moved on, all the parties involved pretty much have
you know, I don't since there's gonna be anything major
coming out of this, I don't know that there should
be at this point, you know, kind of all the
(36:25):
stuff that you laid out and then it comes out.
Now there's like article after article after article trying to
bury Jim Harbaugh and Burry Michigan and say they have
no integrity and all this stuff. It's just it doesn't
add up, Like it doesn't it doesn't pass the smell test.
To me. It feels completely artificial, probably pretty fair.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
Yeah, I don't even know what else there is to say,
and yeah, I think the other thing that gets that
doesn't get factored in. They were punished in real time
with that three game harball suspension. I was gonna save
and we can revisit this topic in our three but
very quickly, your thoughts on the news that broke earlier
today in the world of college football. Big ten proposes
(37:09):
twenty four our twenty eight team college football playoff.
Speaker 2 (37:15):
We need all of next hour to talk about that.
Speaker 1 (37:18):
Well, I'll tell you what. Yeah, we'll save it for
later in the show. But that's a tease. I'll just
be quick on it. Is one everyone has all sorts
of proposals. I wonder how many just are out there.
I also just wonder if this is, you know, like
the typical negotiating tactic where it's just like, you know,
(37:40):
we're gonna, you know, what we really want. This is
what we really want, so we're gonna throw something out
crazy so when we get what we actually want, people
won't be too upset. But you know, the Big ten
and SEC kind of seemed to be at an impass
at how do we get to a sixteen team playoff?
Speaker 5 (37:56):
Now?
Speaker 1 (37:56):
To be clear, I think twelve is kind of the
maximum that we kind of need. I don't think we
need sixteen, but that was kind of besides just the
stupidity of it all. And again, we'll well have plenty
of time to revisit it here in a little bit.
But I wonder if it's a little bit of a
negotiating ploy on behalf of the Big Ten.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
And I hope so, yeah, I hope so, because if
we're about to double this field, I'm like, we're gonna
get to the point where this sport not only does
doesn't even remind you of what it used to be,
but there is no point in the regular season anymore.
Like we eventually we got to get to that point.
And when you look at some of the specifics and
we can jump into them in the next hour, like
(38:37):
some of the ideas that they're throwing out, it's like,
you guys can't be serious, right, Like we don't need
seven teams from these conferences getting bids into this playoff.
Like the playoff needs to be exclusive. You need to
earn it. And last year I didn't feel like, at
least for the most part, of the games that were
played still felt like they all mattered. And the more
(39:00):
you dilute this, the worse it gets. And there is
not a universe where there are twenty eight teams, twenty
four teams, twenty teams that have a chance to win
a national championship. So there's no reason to open it
up that deep when the sport is not that deep.
Speaker 1 (39:16):
I don't really have much else to add, you know,
and I say this all the time. I'm somebody that
does love college basketball. I also understand that most people
don't pay attention to the regular season because the regular
season just doesn't matter. By the way, it's not just
college basketball, it's the NBA too, It's Major League Baseball.
And I keep going back to it, and I've said
this and I even felt it in the twelve team
(39:38):
playoff era, But it's just like all these other sports
are trying to figure out ways to capture people in
the regular season. We just had the baseball game at
Bristol Motor Speedway a few weeks ago. We have the
in season tournament that no one still understands or cares
about three years into the NBA. WNBA has some sort
of midseason cup as well. It's like college football has
(40:01):
and had certainly maybe has still the best regular season
in sports, and they keep trying to dilute it. So
Fox Sports Radio air tors Jason Martin, broadcasting live from
the Fox Sports Radio studios, tell you what, Jamart, why
don't we come back and talk more? College football season
is a week away. We got to get to our
biggest storylines and much much more. This is Fox Sports Radio,
(40:27):
our two tours Martin, Fox Sports Radio. We are broadcasting
live from the Fox Sports Radio studios, taking it up
till two am Eastern Time. Bernie Freddo off The Bernie
Frado Show follows us. Cannot wait to hear what Bernie
has to say about a busy week in sports. Two
(40:48):
weeks basically done of NFL preseason with one to go.
Speaker 5 (40:54):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (40:54):
By the way, we are officially on college football watched
it's technically Sun on the East Coast, so we just
survived our last Saturday on the East Coast without football.
Basically that's the last Saturday without football until late January.
So between college football and the NFL. So a lot
of college football, a lot of NFL coming up, and
(41:16):
you can feel it in the air. It's a very
very very exciting time. Week zero a week from today.
Markey Game Top twenty five matchup Kansas State, Iowa State
in Dublin. Then things get going. Week one that loaded
slate Texas, Ohio State on Fox, Florida State, Alabama, Clemson, LSU,
(41:36):
Notre Dame Miami on Sunday night. A busy, busy, busy
Week one. So I'll tell you what, Jamart, what I
want to do over the next ten to fifteen minutes,
just talk about the things that we are most intrigued
by coming into this college football season. Mary, give us
a little music. You want to go first, Jay, Marty,
you want me to.
Speaker 2 (41:55):
Go first, You go first?
Speaker 1 (41:57):
All right, I'll give you a layup on this one.
I am intrigued by Penn State only because you and
I have been on this boat. And listen, it's not
like you and I, like everyone in college football has
James Franklin one and eighteen against top five teams in
(42:20):
his time as the head coach at Penn State. By
the way, I understand when you're playing top five teams,
that's really good. But listen, this is the year like
there are just you know, to quote wedding crashers, no excuses,
play like a champion. They bring back Drew Aler and
no matter what you think about how good Drew Aller is.
Ohio State's got a first year quarterback, Oregon's got a
(42:41):
first year quarterback, Michigan might be starting a true freshman
at quarterback. So it's like there's just no excuses, and
so you could take it wherever you want. J Mart
the last thing too, let me let me just say
one more thing, because I think there's this notion. Well,
you know, Ohio State did it last year and Michigan
did the year before, and they they they themselves had
(43:04):
kind of their own demons to slay. Michigan hadn't won
a playoff game. Obviously, we know about Ryan dave struggles.
But like I'll say this, Michigan had beaten Ohio State
two years in a row coming into that championship year
and obviously a third straight year. That season, they had
one big games. They just hadn't gotten over the hump
in the playoff. Ohio State. You could say whatever you
(43:26):
want about Ryan Day. I think he had a He
has much more of a Michigan problem than a big
game problem. James Franklin has not really proven he could
because because like Ryan Day has proven he can beat
good teams. He just hadn't beaten Michigan. James Franklin hasn't
proven that he can actually beat anyone of substance. And
(43:47):
so that's what I think makes this unique Penn State
right up the top of most interesting things in college
football coming into this year.
Speaker 2 (43:54):
Yeah, I mean, I think that's one hundred percent sure.
And look, with the no excuses then should come if
you don't win the year, what happens with Franklin because
everything is set, the table is set for them, and
barring injury, they really should be one of those kind
of teams that you're looking at that can potentially win
it all. My first one, I'll try to go a
(44:17):
little off the board here from maybe some of the
most obvious stuff, even though we can certainly get to
that and say how good is Texas Tech going to be? Oh?
Speaker 1 (44:26):
I like that a lot.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
I'm really interested with all the money obviously that was committed,
just an insane amount, and it just shows again with
nil and all of the new ways that teams can
be built in college football, this is a big time
test case and it's going to show you know what
you can do almost overnight in college football now if
(44:51):
you are willing to commit the dollars. Is it going
to amount to a Big Twelve championship, Is it going
to amount to the College Football Playoff? How far where
can this Texas Tech team go and how good will
they be? I'm fascinated to see how that looks. Considering
the level of talent and what they've done, just all
the transfers and everything that they've done. It's obviously they
(45:13):
are going for broke this year, and I am fascinated
to see how that plays out well.
Speaker 1 (45:17):
And the interesting thing too about Texas Tech is obviously
a winnable league. Yes, you know, it was one thing
I mean, and obviously I think it's fair. But the
easy comparison is what Texas A and M did in
high school recruiting a few years ago. But it was like,
even if that worked out the way A and M
had hoped, and it clearly didn't, you still got to
(45:37):
get through Bama. And this was obviously in a four
team playoff era. You still got to get through Georgia whatever.
Texas Tech, you know that there is a very manageable
pathway to win the Big Twelve. Big Twelve, by the way,
a very good conference. There's just no dominant teams Big
twelve has about five teams ranked in the top twenty
five going into this year, including Texas Tech. All right,
(45:59):
I'll keep it going, you know. I'll say I think
another one that you and I are on the same
page on. So I've been a Brian Kelly defender. But
one again, this almost feels like we were talking about Connor
stallions a few minutes ago. It's like we just we
have understandings in college football, and then some time passes
(46:22):
and it's just like we just completely erase what we
thought that what we knew six months or a year ago. LSU,
Garrett Nusmeyer was not good last year, and shout out
to Todd mcshae, who I'm pretty sure has convinced everyone
that Garrett nus Meyer is like you know whatever, I
(46:45):
don't even know, like who was good in college footballer
luck Yeah, Like, and it's like all.
Speaker 2 (46:50):
Of a sudden, he's going to be the greatest thing
we've ever seen. That basically the greatest thing since Trevor
Lawrence or Joe Burrow.
Speaker 1 (46:56):
Yes, and so I'll just give you the stat Okay,
so last year twenty nine touchdowns, twelve interceptions in SEC play,
thirteen tds, eight. I iNTS, Okay, so it's just and
I and I'll say this like I'm a Brian Kelly defedder.
I'm not. There's no excuses this year. But I think
(47:18):
it's also just giving this completely warped perception of what
LSU is. Like, you know, I think they're still, to me,
you know, at best in the third of Like, I
don't think they're Texas. I don't think they're Georgia. I
think Bama has a chance to be really good this year.
And you know, again, do I feel bad for Brian Kelly.
(47:41):
I don't feel bad for a dude making ten million
dollars in year four. But I'll just be transparent spoiler alert.
I think they're getting smacked in Week one at Clemson
and everyone's gonna be like, oh, Brian Kelly, here we
go in and it's like, one, Clemson is just really good,
but two, I just think we're just grossly over hyping
them and more specifically their quarterback coming into this season.
Speaker 2 (48:02):
YEP, I agree with me a million percent with that.
I was actually gonna suggest that it almost looks like
mirror images. My next one, which you kind of took
not exactly was going to be two guys that seemed
to always be near the college football playoff or in
it prior to their new jobs and their old jobs,
(48:24):
whether it was at Oklahoma or at Notre Dame. You
saw those guys all over the place. And then you
get to USC and LSU, and neither one of them
has lived up to the billing thus far, and both
of them are question marks this year. You and I
are on the same page on Nussmeyer. Well, I'll go
to the opposite away and say, what the heck is
USC going to do this year? And looking at Lincoln Riley,
(48:47):
like how much longer is that experiment going to continue?
Because you know, it's not gotten better, it's only gotten worse.
And we got to see this year, it's not just
we're going to change how the defense is being done.
We're gonna bring in some new coaching and all this.
None of it has worked. Dude has never been able
to field a particularly good defense at any point when
(49:08):
he's been a head coach in the league. So I
look at the whole deal and I just say, I
think the USC thing is getting more and more interesting.
I know a lot of these are centered around coaches.
That's because these programs so much are built around coaches,
so I think just the USC of it all to
match your LSU of it all is also going to
be another one of those question marks going into the year.
Speaker 1 (49:30):
It's a very random, sort of niche college football thing.
I do wonder if, like the one hundred million dollar
fully guaranteed contract is a thing of the past, because
you're now paying the players so much and it's.
Speaker 2 (49:47):
Just like.
Speaker 1 (49:49):
You can't now, maybe it's not because obviously, whatever we
think about Brian Kelly and Lincoln Riley, now, uh, there's
a reason that they warranted those contracts, and to get
Lincoln you were gonna have to do something crazy to
get him to leave Oklahoma. I just wonder if those
contracts are going to be a thing of the future,
because it's just it just puts you in such a
bad spot if you you know, it just puts you
(50:14):
in such a bad spot if it doesn't go the
way that you expect. And again to your point, Lincoln
Riley definitely disappointing, LSU, Brian Kelly, it's been disappointing. I
don't think it's getting better. I think it'll be interesting.
How about this, J Mart, I'd go a lot of
different directions. One let me do this one. I think
(50:36):
the lesson that I learned last year from the twelve
team college football Playoff is that, like, I think we
look at at the twelve best teams on paper in
the preseason and we kind of say, okay, like this
is who it's gonna be in the playoff, and then
you just realize that schedules matter so much and you
(50:57):
could be really good and just have a really bad
schedule and it's gonna hurt you, and you could be
maybe good but not great, but if you have the
right schedule in the right breaks, you could get there.
And I know there's a lot of pushback on a
team like Indiana didn't really play anybody. There's going to
be in Indiana or SMU that gets into the playoff.
And I'm not claiming I know who it is, because
(51:20):
if we knew who it was, it wouldn't have been
a surprise. But I just think, you know, there's gonna
be somebody that's either not in the top twenty five
or you know, like I'll give you an example, and
I don't think they're the team, but Tennessee's ranked number
twenty four in the preseason. We all know the quarterback whatever,
(51:40):
but it's like, if you actually look at the schedule, Yeah,
they got Georgia and Bama, but they also have Vandy, Kentucky, Arkansas,
and Mississippi State, the four teams that were picked at
the bottom of that league. And so I just bring
it up because someone is gonna get a scheduling break
that leads them to ten or eleven wins in the
Big Ten or the SEC and they're going to get
(52:03):
in the playoff, whether they're actually good enough or not.
Speaker 2 (52:05):
So I think another one might be what is Nicolo
going to do at UCLA? Just to go with the
you mentioned Tennessee there, and obviously Tennessee taking UCLA's quarterback
as well, that'll be interesting. But just Nico and everything
that has gone wrong for him and his family, in
my opinion since leaving Knoxville, I'm just curious to see
(52:27):
what he actually looks like on the field at UCLA
now that he's home, which he said is why he
went there, which we all laugh off and good luck
with that when you were also reaching out to old
miss Yeah, I I just want to see what he
can do. I mean, there were certainly flashes last year,
but there was still a lot of growth that needed
to come. And now he's going into a completely new
(52:47):
system across the country, playing in a different conference that's
going to have no love for him. So I I, uh,
this is certainly going to be interesting to see that one.
Speaker 1 (52:56):
All right, since we did a lot of coaching stuff,
I'll give you a quarterback as well. And by the way,
I'm fascinated by Nico as well. I don't think he's
gonna be good, and I think that story is just
gonna get worse and worse as the season goes on.
Speaker 2 (53:08):
I agree.
Speaker 1 (53:09):
So I'm just interested, and I'll be honest, I don't
know that at this moment in time, I have a
definitive strong take on how it's gonna go. I will
say this though, two years ago, Carson Beck was good,
and so I just bring it up. He certainly regressed
last year by the way Georgia led the nation and
(53:29):
drops I'm not saying whatever. He certainly regressed last year.
Two years ago, he did throw for twenty four touchdown,
six interceptions, seventy three percent completion percentage. Like he has
proven to be a good college quarterback. Now, the talent
around him will be good at Miami, but not great.
And he is coming off like, oh, I don't know,
(53:52):
his entire elbow got shredded up. But I think, because
let's just put it this way, he doesn't strike people
as maybe the most most likable guy, it feels kind
of easy to kind of just disparage him and oh,
he sucks and he's this and he's that. I don't
think he's terrible, But what does that mean? You know,
(54:12):
Miami's got you know, they're an interesting team in the
ACC probably ten and two, maybe eleven and one is
going to have to you know, they're they're gonna have
to do that to get to the College Football Playoff.
They play Florid in the out of conference No Clemson
in the regular season. I'm just curious. I'm not saying
I know how it's going to go. I'm just intrigued.
Speaker 2 (54:30):
That's all two lowest hanging fruits surprise we haven't mentioned.
We won't get through the segment without mentioning them here.
Bill Belichick in North Carolina and Arch Manning. Those two
are probably the two that are the easiest ones to
actually point out and say, everybody wants to see what
(54:50):
Arch is going to be able to do now that
it's his show with a team that many believe are
going to win the national championship and who are favored
to win the national championship. And then we have already
discussed that North Carolina schedule is very, very easy. But
just what else is going to go on? I mean,
Jordan Hudson's calling local reporters in Charlotte and doing awful interviews.
(55:12):
I don't know what her deal is, but they need
to keep her away from public eye in general and
tell her to stop calling people and fixing narratives and
all this. That whole situation is weird. Maybe the schedule
might not be easy enough to get completely rid of
all of the just craziness that is going on down there.
So obviously North Carolina and arch Manning or top of
(55:32):
mind as soon as the season starts.
Speaker 1 (55:34):
I'll throw you a quick curveball on the arch Manning thing,
just to just for fun, just to kind of wrap
the segment. So we know they're playing Ohio State week one.
Do you know who Ohio State's new defensive coordinator is?
Off top of your head?
Speaker 2 (55:51):
No?
Speaker 1 (55:52):
Okay, So Jim Knowles was a defensive coordinator. He went
to Penn State. Ohio State's new defensive coordinator is Matt Patricia.
So my whole thing, and I'll say this really quick,
is last year Ohio State had so much talent and
by the way, like we ragged on Ryan Day, credit
(56:12):
to him, they turned it on when it mattered, deserving
national champion. Whatever you think of Chip Kelly the head coach,
he is a great offensive coordinator, he's off to the NFL.
You're replace him with Brian Hartline, who was on the staff.
Receivers coach gets bumped up, and then defense Matt Patricia'
is the defense coordinator. So basically an offensive coordinator with
no experience and Matt Patricia, which I just don't even
(56:33):
know what to make of. And I think that's like
the interesting thing with Ohio State is kind of we
talked about all the players that they lost. I don't
know what to make of either of those coordinators, and
whatever we think of Ryan Day, like they had, whatever
you think of whatever, they had two great coordinators last year.
And you know, obviously Matt Patricia, his big brain, is
(56:54):
going up against Archer Manning in Week one, So I
think that's an interesting way to frame that game. You
know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (56:59):
Oh, yeah, we do into the Ryan Day point. I
think it's interesting that they were coming to the season
where it's just more important that they go ahead and
beat Michigan than anything else. Yeah, they won the championship
last year, so I think that created a lot of equity.
I think the pressure is off of him in many
ways compared to what it's been the last handful of years,
except that Michigan game. Like, I think that's the most
(57:20):
important game on their schedule, even including the College Football
Playoff to a lot of Ohio State fans.
Speaker 1 (57:25):
Yeah, it's really interesting how that works is that last
year they beat O, they lost to Michigan, but it
didn't matter because they won the championship. Now, I think
it's kind of the opposite. We don't really care, you know,
like like we're gonna, we're gonna you know, right, you know, uh,
you know, you get some positive momentum off of the
National Championship, but you do gotta beat Michigan. Like if
(57:47):
they go eleven and one lose to save Penn State,
but they beat Michigan and then lose in the playoff,
I think fan base is fine. You lose to Michigan.
Even if you get to the playoff, I think there's
gonna be some frustration. So yeah, those are some things
that we are looking forward to cover a lot of
ground in about eighteen minutes there, jail, So I am
(58:09):
so excited. Week zero next Saturday. Week one is two
weeks from tonight. Fox Sports Radio ertors Jason Martin broadcasting
live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios. Coming up next,
we go from college to the NFL AFC East Bills, Jets, Patriots,
(58:31):
even already Spaniards, Miami Dolphins. What do we make of them?
We'll discuss the AFC East next.

(59:31):
All right, I'll tell you what, Jamart. Let's keep the
conversation going. Fun conversation. We just had on the state
of college football. Two weeks out from week one, one
week out from week zero. But we have been doing
over underwing total picks for every single team in the NFL.
At this point, we've done the entire NFC. If you
(59:52):
missed any of those, go back and download our podcast.
We did NFC North, NFC East, NFC South, and NFC West.
Today we switch gears to the AFC, will start in
the East. Brandy, give us some music, put us in
the or Mary, give us some music. Brandon let us.
I think I can't even imagine who's gonna be at
(01:00:14):
the top of the list here on over under win
totals for the Buffalo but for the NFC.
Speaker 8 (01:00:20):
Yeah, it takes a genius to figure that one out, right. Yeah,
the Bills eleven and a half are first. Obviously, coming
off of a disappointing AFC Championship lost to the Chiefs,
where there was a lot of speculation about referees in
that game, the fourth down, then the Kincaid drop. It
seems like there's always so close to getting to that
Super Bowl in avenging those losses when they lost three
(01:00:44):
or four in a row. But they have eleven and
a half as they're over under Aaron, let's start with you.
Speaker 1 (01:00:49):
I gotta be real. I'm looking at this schedule. It's
so so. First of all, the team's awesome. Okay, so
we get that. I'm not a Sean McDermott guy. I
think he chokes in the playoffs, but they clearly are
very good in the regular season. Schedule is very top heavy.
They do play Baltimore, they do play Cincinnati, they do
play Philadelphia, and they do play Case. How about this,
(01:01:12):
they get all four of those games at home. Kansas
City is a team they've had success against in the
regular season, to be clear, Chiefs fans, and so you
look at the rest of the schedule. Division, it feels
like we're talking minimum five and one. Man, I think
four and two is in play, but let's say five
(01:01:32):
and one. Then he got the AFC South, the little
Saints here or little Panthers there. We did them last week.
That division stinks. I just think this has to be
a fourteen to fifteen, not fifteen. I think thirteen to
fourteen at minimum. So go ahead and give me a
very comfortable over on eleven and a half. He said, right, yeah,
(01:01:56):
eleven and a half. All right, I'm saying over what
about you?
Speaker 2 (01:01:58):
J Martin? Me too, And you pretty much just did
what I was gonna do if I let off, I
was going to say fourteen and three. Just looking at
the schedule, I could see him losing to Baltimore. I
bet Vrabel gets them once. And the reason why I
say that is because Vrabel got them all the time
when he was in Tennessee. There's just say he's always
ready for those kind of games. So I could easily
(01:02:18):
see them losing one of those games to New England
in Division. And then you know, you play against the Steelers,
the Bengals, the Chiefs, Tampa Bay like somewhere in there,
you probably will drop another game, but unless there's an injury.
I really like this schedule the way it matches up,
and of course the way that you laid it out
is right. So yeah, I mean they were thirteen and
(01:02:39):
four a season ago. I easily could see that, But
I really do think fourteen and three is where I
could see them finish, and that's where I'll predict them
to finish. So yeah, very easy over.
Speaker 1 (01:02:50):
So now all I was gonna say Brandon was the
first over under was very obvious. I actually don't know
where you're going to go on the second team, so
I'm sorry to cut you off.
Speaker 8 (01:02:57):
Go Oh no, I say I was going to go
over as well, because I think this is the ear
of the Bills get to the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (01:03:04):
I really want. Wow.
Speaker 1 (01:03:07):
Yeah, all right, Jamber, remind me, we'll have to do
our NFL like I know we're doing over unders. We'll
have to get your official No, I guess we'll have
that next Saturday.
Speaker 2 (01:03:17):
Yeah, we'll still have another we'll still have another show.
Speaker 8 (01:03:19):
Okay, Okay, So next guys, we'll go to the Patriots
simply because we have a tie of over underwin total
eight point five Dolphins and Patriots. We'll start with the
Patriots because I think they'll be better, so we'll start
with them.
Speaker 1 (01:03:33):
JM. Mart Let's start with you over under on the
Patriots eight and a half.
Speaker 2 (01:03:37):
Eight and a half is more than double the amount
of games that they won last year. They're definitely better,
no question about that. I mean I watched Rabele's entire tenure,
covered it day after day after day here in Nashville.
Dude can coach, he can be he can be hard
at times, he can be very difficult on certain guys,
and he does have guys that really love him and
(01:03:58):
guys that don't really like him and have plenty to
say after the fact. But I would be surprised if
New England is not demonstrably better and clearly this win total.
Would say that. The only thing that scares me about
that is that is an awful lot. That's an awful
big shift. I haven't gotten a chance to really look
at the schedule in depth. I'll bring it up in
(01:04:19):
front of me now, but I think tentatively I'm gonna
say over because I feel better about both New England
and Buffalo than I do the other two teams in
the division going through the year. So I'm looking at
this schedule. Yeah, I feel I feel pretty comfortable. I
think this team could win nine games, maybe even ten
if things play out right. So Yeah, Vrabel coaches teams up.
(01:04:43):
That's what he's done his entire career. There's no reason
to think he can't do it here, so.
Speaker 1 (01:04:47):
I gotta go with you. By the way, you look
at the start of the schedule, Raiders at Dolphins, Steelers
Panthers four and zero in September is absolutely in play.
Three of the first four at home. Now you do
after that have three straight games away from Foxborough, starting
with the Buffalo Bills. Ah, that's what I was gonna say. Yeah,
(01:05:09):
in Tennessee they will be playing the Titans, and you know,
back half of the schedule is manageable. I mean, listen,
I think all of us have kind of the same
universal take on Mike Frable, why they wanted him, why
he wanted this job, the intrigue of what we all
think Drake may can be, although he isn't there yet.
(01:05:30):
So I'm with J Mart. You know, I don't think
it's a hard over where I'm like sprinting to the
sportsbook to get it done. But I will take the
over on the New England Patriots as well. So J
Mart and I agree on the over on the Buffalo Bills.
We agree on the over on the New England Patriots.
Two more teams we will get to them momentarily, but
(01:05:51):
for the first time straight from Sofi stadium. He shoved
pre out of that update desk, he said, give me
my best not quite Steve Desager.
Speaker 2 (01:06:01):
Good to see you, how for Boston doing in Richmond?
Speaker 9 (01:06:04):
But wait, if only I could have shoved cars aside
on the four or five.
Speaker 1 (01:06:07):
Can you confirm that Matt Stafford did or did not
have a workout before the game?
Speaker 9 (01:06:11):
By the way, it is my first reaction to that
when I heard that there at the stadium tonight was okay.
Best case scenario for Rams fan is the Rams just
don't want to do what happened to them last weekend,
which is they told everybody, Hey, he's gonna work out
before the weekend game, Hey he's gonna feel better, and
we think he's gonna practice on Monday, and then none
(01:06:32):
of that other stuff happened because he just didn't feel
up to it with the bad back come Monday. So
maybe they're literally not saying anything until Monday, and then
he'll be practicing next week. There's your best case scenario.
Speaker 1 (01:06:46):
There you go.
Speaker 9 (01:06:47):
I thought it was interesting the but when you don't
comment that he even practiced today, you are leaving as
a team, leaving yourself open to this kind of speculation.
Speaker 1 (01:06:57):
That's quite Sterrtual. Yeah, I was gonna say I thought
it was interesting. The assistant after the game very much,
not wanting to put himself in the headlines. I don't
know if he had a chance to even see it
you at the Seger, but.
Speaker 9 (01:07:07):
He's assistant head coach, he's got the title, so you
know this was his night. Well, he did say the
handoff coordinator stuff during preseason, the whole gig.
Speaker 1 (01:07:15):
Well, he handed off that news and notes to Sean
McVay on Monday because he was not going to make
a headline by giving out something that he wasn't supposed to.
Speaker 9 (01:07:22):
Well, I am expecting Sean McVay to yet again be
honest and forthcoming and whatever the update is Monday, I
do expect to get that on Monday. He has been
detailed with the back injury before. We've got one game
to go, under a minute left at Denver and then
the night will be done with NFL exhibitions. A few
more on the weekends still to come. At Denver. It's
(01:07:43):
twenty seven to seven Broncos over the Cardinals.
Speaker 1 (01:07:46):
RJ.
Speaker 9 (01:07:46):
Harvey had an early touchdown run. Jared Stidham with two
touchdown passes. Will Lutz with a couple of field goals.
The game in Englewood went to the Rams on a
late touchdown pass final seconds by Stetson Bennett twenty three
to twenty two over the Chargers. Stetson Bennett had over
three hundred yards passing tonight, three touchdowns, one interception. He
(01:08:06):
played the whole game, and the forty nine Ers won
at Las Vegas on a fifty nine yard field goal
on the final play twenty two to nineteen. The Dodgers
are back in first alone in first in the NL
West after shutting out the Padres in La six to
nothing to go a game up on San Diego. The
loss to Dylan Ceeze, who walked six in his three
(01:08:27):
and a third innings, but the Milwaukee Brewers won again
fourteen straight victories for him. After an eleven inning win
at Cincinnati six to five, Cubs won today Mets with
a win Phillies loss. Pitcher Zach Wheeler went on the
injured list. Victories for Toronto, Boston and the Yankees. Houston's
the first place team in the AL West game and
(01:08:48):
a half over Seattle now after the Stros won in
twelve innings against Baltimore five to four, as for the
BMW Championship. This month, we are in the PGA playoffs.
Robert McIntyre is the leader by five four strokes in
Maryland over Scottie Scheffler. Ludwig Oberg is six behind. The
live golf event is in Indianapolis. Dustin Johnson has tied
(01:09:09):
for the lead with Sebastian Munos. It's a four stroke advantage.
Just one WNBA game today, Minnesota now twenty eight and
five after beating New York eighty six to eighty and
among the MLS games, Leedo Messi with a lake goal.
His teammate Lewis Suarez followed, so three to one, Miami
beat the LA Galaxy. Back to you, Thank.
Speaker 1 (01:09:27):
You very much. Steve Segai be back with us in
just a moment for his extended update. This is Fox
Sports Radio Era tors. Jason Martin tell you what. We
were a little short on time here. We still got
two teams in the AFC East. The good news is,
jaymart I don't know much we're gonna have to say
about the Dolphins in the the Jets here, So Mary,
(01:09:47):
give us that music. Brandon, who is up next on
our list here?
Speaker 8 (01:09:52):
Yeah, there's not much of suspense since I already told you, guys,
but Dolphins eight and a half personally, before you guys go,
I thought this number. I I thought this number was
gonna be much lower than eight and a half.
Speaker 2 (01:10:02):
It's definitely alright to me. They were eight and nine
last year. I'll go first, I guess. So they brought
in Zach Wilson to b QB two, and there's already
reports that Quinn Ewers is starting to kind of challenge
him for that job. Man, remember when he was a
second pick in the draft and everybody thought he was
the greatest thing since sliced bread. And I was just like,
I don't understand where this came from. Yeah, yeah, light
(01:10:25):
comes at you fast. Anyway. I think it's under I
don't think they're gonna be very good. I think Mike
McDaniel is probably in a new job next year.
Speaker 1 (01:10:34):
Yeah, so I'll be brief on this as well. So
I agree. And you hate to say it, but Tua
just feels like, you know, you're not getting seventeen games
from him, and it and it has just been weird
all preseason, you know. And and I'll credit our buddy
Colin Coward. He's been on this with Mike McDaniel. It
(01:10:55):
just feels like it's just weird, you know. I mean,
you know, I think he was liked and respected early
in his tenure. I think, you know, he's been a
little bit maybe you have a pushover these last few years.
I don't know that he has the pulse of that
locker room. And I just think that it's tough when
you when you just can't expect that much from your quarterback.
(01:11:18):
So I'm gonna go under. I will say the schedule
is very manageable. Open at Indie Patriots in Week two.
You do have the Bills, but then Jets, Panthers, you
got the Browns, you got the Falcons. So they can
get there if they can stay healthy and if they
could kind of keep everybody in line. I just don't
know that they will Brandon j Ets, Jets, Jets, Jets
(01:11:42):
yep six and a half. I thought this was high too.
Aaron will start with you. Listen. I think everybody likes
Aaron Glenn. I think there's a great deal of respect,
and I think to his credit, given the injuries in
Detroit over the last last season late in the year,
he did about as well as you could expect. I
just it's the Jets man, and like, I hate to
(01:12:04):
be that, but I think I even mentioned this last week.
They've gone defensive head coach after defensive head coach. It
hasn't worked. They haven't figured out the quarterback. Justin Field
seems to say and do all the right things. I
don't think he's the long term answer. And it just
it feels like the same situation, just with a new
(01:12:25):
cast of characters. Now again. You know, Justin Field's pops,
Garrett Wilson's a dude. They got guys on defense. What's
the number six and a half? Six and a half. Yeah,
I just I don't trust the quarterback. If I don't
trust the quarterback, that's right, six and a half.
Speaker 2 (01:12:42):
Under under And that's why. And look, I've been a
Justin Fields supporter, and I'm certainly not saying that I'm
not supporting him now, But everything that you read about
how this has gone, how he's looked in camp, how
he's looked with some of these receiver it just doesn't
sound good to me. And to your point, they just
(01:13:05):
have not found a coach and a coordinator that's been
able to unlock that offense in so long, even with
the talent that they have, the Jets are a calamity.
I don't see why that changes. I think this is
a this is a max five win team. I could
easily see it being a four win team. It's going
to be a really, really rough year.
Speaker 1 (01:13:22):
By the way, as we're talking, they're playing highlights of
Justin Field's bouncing balls to Garrett Wilson. Yeah, we got
half a second here. I don't understand how he could
be throwing sixty yard bombs to Garrett Wilson at Ohio State,
looking like the next coming, and now all of a
sudden he can't throw. I don't understand how that works.
(01:13:43):
I know Ryan Days a, you know, an offensive coach,
and Aaron Glenn's a defensive coach.
Speaker 2 (01:13:47):
Is flating balls, and Columbus.
Speaker 1 (01:13:49):
Yeah, I don't know, man, but it's just like whatever. Anyway,
So we all so we actually four for four over
on Buffalo, over on New England, under on Miami, under
on the Jets. I would argue maybe the least interesting
division we've done, by the way, not just from our perspective,
I feel like everyone has the exact same opinion on
(01:14:11):
all four teams, and I think right now, based on
the information we have, those opinions are accurate. So that
is the AFC East. Next week we'll do maybe the
AFC North. Really fun division obviously with a lot of
intriguing teams and situations, certainly at the quarterback position. Fox
Sports Radio ertors Jason Martin, as we do every week
(01:14:32):
around twelve forty five Eastern to Saga, will give you
the extended update, the deep dive on what you missed
on a busy Saturday to Saga. Coming up next, Fox
Sports Radio, Welcome back, everybody. Fox Sports Radio aer tours
Jason Martin broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio studios.
Mary mack in her bag with all this music tonight,
(01:14:55):
but she's going old school tonight. I know, old soul
Mary Maco there. I love it.
Speaker 9 (01:15:01):
By the way, I did hear some of the show
on our great San Diego affiliate coming out to four
or five, So shout out to AM seven sixty in.
Speaker 1 (01:15:09):
Sandy our show or Stinky Genius and Plank Oh yeah,
the end.
Speaker 9 (01:15:13):
Of them, but mostly you. After I got out of
the stadium.
Speaker 1 (01:15:16):
I hope we sounded good.
Speaker 9 (01:15:17):
Great reception on the West side.
Speaker 1 (01:15:19):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (01:15:20):
So what we did with Arnie.
Speaker 9 (01:15:22):
Yeah, I'm sorry. I heard Arnie's name and I just
blacked out there. Did you say something?
Speaker 2 (01:15:27):
No, yeah, exactly, I just said really good reception. Even
if does that you couldn't hear Arnie or does that
mean no? Boy?
Speaker 9 (01:15:38):
You know there is an Arizona kicker that looks like
he's gonna be t with the Ravens. So something's going
good for that program.
Speaker 1 (01:15:45):
Yeah, when you're kicker. I can't say that because Tetroo
McMillan was a first round pick, but yeah, when Tyler
looped the kicker is the highlight of your program. That's
a couple of years. Yeah, might might not be.
Speaker 9 (01:15:56):
That was a thirty one thirteen Ravens final at Dallas
and Joe Milton was swell one interception, one hundred and
twenty two yards passing most of last weekend at the Rams,
Joe Milton, it was just what is going on out here?
How is this guy going to get any NFL time?
The way he is playing? And you know it's a
strong arm. But actually there was a play last weekend
(01:16:16):
that shows you everything you know need to know, I think,
and that is he threw a beautiful deep ball but
it was into double coverage and picked off at the coalides.
Speaker 2 (01:16:24):
So we saw that in Knoxville for years. Exactly that
thing's twenty thirty yards further than it needs to be exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:16:30):
Know what was funny last year when he played on
the Patriots, Like right around this time, Patriots fans were getting, oh, well,
you know we're here Joe Milton buzz and I tweeted
something about like, oh, they're in the same stage of
denial as every fan base, and like Tennessee fans came,
We're like, why are you talking about Joe Milton like that.
I'm like, listen, I know you want to be pretend
(01:16:51):
like you're a bad you know what on social media,
we all know Joe Milton suck for you. Stop anyway.
It's just typical Tennessee fan nonsense.
Speaker 9 (01:16:58):
But now, so we had exhibition when for the forty
nine Ers and the Rams in very close games. It
was a Rams home game for what it's worth, in
the stadium, these two share a late touchdown pass from
Stetson Bennett with five seconds to go got the Rams
of twenty three to twenty two win over the Chargers.
Chargers starting wide receiver Quinton Johnston dropped a ball down
(01:17:19):
the sideline on the first of course, that's not news.
He drops lots of balls, but down the sidelines, and
he took a shot and was apparently just out, but
was able to stand up eventually. But it was notable
that the Rams traders were the first to run on
the field and check him out. It was that serious initially,
and he was able to, you know, at least look
(01:17:41):
lucid and get on the cart himself and go straight
to the locker room. First series of the night, it
was called a concussion. Afterwards, Rams win by one with
the late score justin Herbert did play a preseason game
for the first time in his career. He wanted to
feel a pass rush, he said, so he played the
first series two of five forty six yard its passing,
and then Taylor Heineke, who is genuinely bad last weekend,
(01:18:04):
took over and he was okay, six of eleven fifty
six yards, had a couple carries almost twenty yards on
the ground. But the Chargers in the first half red
zone tds oz for three. They settled for three field goals.
In fact, the last three Charger drives tonight were three
to three and outs. But in the middle. There they
did score a touchdown on a punt return, which is
why they had the late lead until the Rams won it.
(01:18:27):
As for that San Francisco victory, it was twenty two
to nineteen at Las Vegas. Jake Moody five for six
on field goals. With about ten minutes left, he hit
a fifty yarder. With under a minute to go, he
hit from forty four and then the Niners defense got
a couple of sacks and a pick, took over and
Moody hit from fifty nine yards out on the final
(01:18:48):
play to win the game twenty two to nineteen. The
late game was at Denver Broncos twenty seven to seven
over the Arizona Cardinals. Jared Stidham with two touchdown passes.
People in fantasy football, we'll certainly looking to see what RJ.
Harvey has in the Denver the crowded Denver backfield, but
three carries, eighteen yards and a touchdown for him in
(01:19:09):
this one. I will say before I leave the NFL
and the Rams that Stetson Bennett did play the whole night.
They had a drive in the first half fourteen plays,
almost eighty yards and got no points out of it.
An eight minute drive and then in the second half
twelve play drive six minutes. Got no points out of that,
and he still won it with the late drive. Now
(01:19:30):
Trey Lance made an appearance again. He has actually been
decent in the preseason. I'm not saying he's an NFL starter,
but he's shown more than I think all of his
time in the San Francisco uniform. There was a point
with the Chargers. He had a thirty four yard pass
to set up on the next play a one yard
touchdown run. Rams final drive though in a minute twenty
(01:19:52):
three ten plays, seventy five yards and the win Stetson
Bennett three hundred and twenty four yards passing.
Speaker 1 (01:19:59):
Thank you very much. What's Steve the Seger? Appreciate you
swinging by here, of course after a busy night at
SOFI Stadium, and you'll be with us until two am
Eastern Ertors, Jason Martin, we are on for one more hour.
We'll come back talk about a busy night in the
NFL and look ahead to an interesting week ahead. Fox
Sports Radio. Welcome in everybody. Hour three Torres and Martin.
(01:20:27):
Fox Sports Radio. We are broadcasting live from the Fox
Sports Radio studios, taking you up till two am Eastern time.
Bernie Fratdo of The Bernie Frado Show follows us just
cannot wait to hear what Bernie has to say about
a busy, busy week in sports, A lot going on NFL.
(01:20:49):
We are, of course, now under a week to the
start of college football season Week zero next Saturday the
Marquee Game, a top twenty five mat Kansas State and
Iowa State in Dublin, and of course Week one is
when it really gets going. Texas Ohio State on Fox, LSU, Clemson, Miami,
Notre Dame, Florida State, Alabama, and much much more. Jmart,
(01:21:13):
real quick, I mean, Texas Ohio State is the obvious?
Is there a Week one college football? And I'm not
trying to be sarcastic because you'll be traveling that weekend,
But is there one that you're especially intrigued by? Are
they all intriguing? Like what actually stated? I mean, Texas
Ohio State is so obvious that it's almost like too obvious.
(01:21:35):
But is there is there one that stands out to you?
Speaker 2 (01:21:37):
I mean there's look, Ben, there's a lot of good
stuff there. You're right, I mean, Texas Ohio State is
on a completely different plane than a lot of this stuff.
I mean, Notre Dame Miami is going to be certainly
interesting on Sunday, no question about that, and then you
get Belichick on Monday as well. But I mean, if
(01:21:59):
you're just looking at that Saturday and you're looking at
just yeah, I mean, if you're adding it all, I mean,
Alabama Florida State, I think is just an intriguing matchup
generally to see what what Alabama looks like out of
the gates this year, because there is certainly a lot
of pressure on Caitlin de bor so just kind of
seeing it they come out rocking it. I mean, Saban
(01:22:22):
was known for rolling out in Week one and just
absolutely destroying teams, and this Florida State team coming off
of last year, they're gonna want to show their best
footing and it's that that being on the road in Tallahassee.
I'm just I'm certainly gonna be curious to see what
that team looks like. And you look at some of
the other stuff, a lot of it is I don't know,
(01:22:45):
is there something Is there something major that I'm missing?
I mean, LSU Clemson is the other obvious one. Yeah, certainly,
and we discussed that one earlier, but I mean Clemson's
a team we were When No and I were hosting
on Thursday morning, he mentioned that there was somebody that
had put down money on three different teams that would
then pay out and he would make a tremendous amount
(01:23:06):
of money. He was basically going all in on one
of these teams to win the championship. And the question
that No asked was, if you could place money on
three teams this year under that kind of auspice, what
would those three teams be? And Clemson's probably one of them, honestly,
Like they're certainly going to be in the mix. I
mean Club Nick and just they're they're kind of loaded
(01:23:28):
this year, and they're in a conference that they should
be able to take advantage of as well. So I
think that's a really important game. Certainly it's important for LSU.
And what is it with LSU deciding in Week one
every year to pick a game that's going to set
them off on the wrong foot, because I think they
will lose that game, first of all.
Speaker 1 (01:23:46):
So it's really funny because last year I said this
during the floor the USC game, I said, can someone
get Brian Kelly app State in Week one.
Speaker 2 (01:23:56):
Yeah, he didn't have to do this.
Speaker 1 (01:23:58):
Yeah, And people were like, oh, you know, the next
two years they're playing Clemson, right, I'm like, oh Jesus,
so goodness gracious. So I'll say we didn't talk much
Clemson in that first that college football segment we did
an hour ago. I think they're fascinating and I think,
you know, this could be a little bit of a
Dabo Sweeney victory tour, because you know, he was kind
of skewered for his decisions and his thought process on
(01:24:20):
the transfer portal. And I'm with you from the perspective
that I think that team, to me is one that's
good enough to win a national championship. I'll just say
quick two things on Week one. Besides the obvious, I
do think like I think like Texas Oklahoma is like
the casuals game, Like that's the one that everyone's going
to tune into because of the brands on the helmets.
(01:24:41):
But I think we both kind of feel like I
think the diehards understand that Clemson LSU was probably the
one with the most stakes. And then I will say
that Sunday night game because I kind of don't know
what I'm expecting from either team, Like I know what
I'm expecting from Clemson, I know what I'm expecting from
even Penn State. Like all I think with Penn State
is are they gonna win the games that matter in
(01:25:01):
the postseason. They'll go ten to two, maybe eleven and one, whatever,
maybe twelve to zero. I have no idea what I'm
getting from Miami and Notre Dame. Notre Dame of course
coming off that national championship run, but like they lost
a ton. The quarterback that we all expect to be
the starting quarterback has never thrown a college pass. And
(01:25:21):
then Miami, like we talked about it, like, I think
there's been a little bit of an overcorrection on Carson Beck.
He was not good last year. He was pretty good
two years ago, so you have that element of it.
You also have he took a brutal injury, major surgery,
didn't throw for months on end. Now all the reports
have been positive. But those two to me, again, Texas
(01:25:45):
Oklahoma's obvious. Your point on Debor is well taken, even
though that's on the road. You gotta win that game.
But yeah, I think those are the two more than
anything that get me excited for next week or for
two weeks from now.
Speaker 2 (01:25:56):
J Martin, Yeah, I mean, and again, it's just it's
gonna be week after week. There's just gonna be so
many different storylines. But we do know, even with an
expanded playoff, there are certain teams where it's just like, man,
it feels like there's a lot on the line right
out of the gate, and there's just somewhere it's just
the momentum needs to go in the right direction or
(01:26:18):
the fan base is going to go in the wrong direction.
And I think that's certainly true with Alabama, but it's
definitely true with LSU, oh more so than anywhere.
Speaker 1 (01:26:27):
By the way, this isn't really a national team. Auburn
opening at Baylor on Friday night too.
Speaker 2 (01:26:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:26:35):
Yeah, for people who don't follow the day to day.
Baylor won six straight games to end the season last year.
I think they finished eight and four, nine and five,
you know, eight and five, nine and four, something like that.
But we're very good towards the end of the year.
I think most people, if you know college football, Hugh
Freeze certainly a lightning rod. They're coming off a five
and seven season, and he cannot that's one. You know, listen,
(01:26:58):
I think that they have a pseudo manageable SEC schedule
by SEC terms, but that is one they cannot lose
really quickly. J mart Let's just spend a couple of
minutes on the Saturday NFL preseason. A couple games on Friday,
a couple games on Sunday. We get a nice Monday
night game this week Cincinnati at Washington, But let's stick
(01:27:19):
to Saturday. We had about, you know, seven eight games
over the course of the day. The biggest story to
me is a game in which, you know, listen, a
lot of guys don't play in the preseason, but this
one is notable. Matthew Stafford not playing for the Los
Angeles Rams and really no real tangible news on him.
There were reports he was going to work out before
(01:27:41):
the game. He did not. Aubrey Pleasant was the sitting
head coach tonight. Basically, Sean McVay, let's his assistant coaches
coach in the preseason as if they're the head coach.
Get him some reps. Aubrey Pleasant after the game said
there would be no comment from him. Sean McVay would
address it on Monday. Where do you stand on the
lost Angelus Rams because I think it's safe to say
(01:28:03):
the drop off between him and Jimmy g him and
Stetson Bennett is pretty big if he isn't ready to
go early in the year.
Speaker 2 (01:28:10):
Yeah, I mean, I just I'm down on the Rams
because I just don't know what to make of the
quarterback scenario. I just don't feel confident in Stafford's ability
to even suit up in double figure games this year.
I mean, it certainly can happen, and I certainly hope
that it does, but it just feels like it's gonna
(01:28:31):
be a Rolling Hills workout of sorts. There's gonna be
some hives and some lows, and there's gonna be some
weeks where you think he can go, and for whatever reason,
he's not gonna go. He's gonna be I said this Thursday,
and I said it earlier in this show. I think
he's going to be perpetually questionable, Like you're just never
gonna feel particular. He's the guy you better not draft
in fantasy either, like that's the one guy because from
(01:28:55):
week to week, I just I think it's gonna almost
be a crapshoot as to whether or not he's going
to be able to play. He's just he's just so
beaten down, and he's played so much football in his
career and for so long he wasn't protected particularly well
in Detroit and age gets us all and so I
just I look at it and I just don't feel
(01:29:16):
confident at all about what the Rams can do because
the quarterback spot now, it's you could be worse than
to have Jimmy Gus your backup, right, Like I mean,
if you've got him, and even if you have to
throw Bennett in there, some you're in better situations than
a lot of teams from their backup perspectives. Plus you
have the McVeigh factor, and they do have some weapons
obviously in Takua and some of those guys. I just
(01:29:38):
I'm a little down on them. I just think it's
gonna be a rough year from the injury standpoint.
Speaker 1 (01:29:42):
I'll say on him. And we talked about this a
little bit in hour one. People could go back download
the podcast. So I think it's noteworthy that the Rams
certainly didn't want to lose him this offseason, but also
so like there was the we're not just blindly taking
(01:30:05):
you back and giving you the extension that you want,
like it was a negotiation, it was whatever you want
to call it, but it also it also was a
scenario where like he was available and he was looking
at other teams. Now, I think both sides made the
right decision, respectfully to your point about the Lions, Like,
(01:30:25):
if I was him, I don't know that I'd be
rushing to the New York Giants for a couple extra
dollars after everything that your body's been through playing for
an inferior organization. But I just think it's noteworthy is
that even the Rams were like, listen, man, we appreciate
everything you've done, but we can't give you that sweetheart
godfather deal with however many years you want and however
(01:30:46):
much money you want, because as great as you are,
there is a degree of questions about you your healthier futures.
So I don't know if you have anything to piggyback
off that we can get to a couple other topics
from the day, But I just think it's noteworthy that
you think that given everything that he's done for that franchise,
it would be a no brainer just give him what
(01:31:06):
he wants. But I think even the Rams see what
you see, which is a thirty seven year old guy
that's been banged up that they can't mortgage their entire
future to take care of.
Speaker 2 (01:31:15):
Yeah, I mean eventually, Yeah. And usually the team is
the one that's going to know that's the fastest. And
in this case, I think that is one hundred percent
accurate to this situation. The Rams love the guy, they
want him around, but I know that they also have
to start looking towards the future. And so we'll see
(01:31:37):
how it like inevitably plays out. And you just hope
the best for Stafford, and you hope that he's able
to play more and maybe he's going to be healthier
than maybe we anticipate. But I could easily see this
being his last to raw in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (01:31:53):
Really quick, I'll throw a little bit of a curveball
at you. Indian Green Bay played earlier today. Daniel Jones
said of eleven Anthony Richardson's six of eleven zero combined touchdowns,
do you have any strong takes on that quarterback room?
Does it even matter? Is the is the twenty twenty
sixth starter on the roster right now? Where are you
(01:32:16):
at with Indianapolis and yet another quarterback controversy or Derby
or whatever you want to call it, not concoence, I don't.
Speaker 2 (01:32:22):
I don't think they're good regardless of who they go.
With Richardson again, I mean, even the play that he
got hurt on, it's just he even admitted it's like
he didn't see it coming. And there's just some there's
some lack of football alertness with him that really would
(01:32:42):
have benefited from another year at Florida. And unfortunately, and
we first guessed this, I mean, he had a lot
of raw talent, but that's the key is a lot
of it was raw talent, and I don't know that
he walked into the best situation to try and sort
of get that off on the right foot. And then
he's been injured. It just hasn't looked particularly good. And
(01:33:04):
then we know what Daniel Jones is. He's okay sort of,
but he's not gonna he's not gonna instill fearing anything.
The good news is, you're in a pretty bad division.
The bad news is, I mean, cam Ward's a number
one pick who claims that the Titans are gonna be
a top ten offense this year. I say that sort
(01:33:24):
of tongue in cheek. He did say any minute, but
of course he's gonna say something like that, so you know,
I I just I feel like Jones is probably the
safest option, but he also probably has the lowest ceiling,
so I don't I don't know. It just depends on
what Sticking says. He's close to a decision, and it
(01:33:44):
just feels like to me, it doesn't really matter. They're
not gonna be a particularly good football team anyway.
Speaker 1 (01:33:49):
Last team, by the way, I have nothing to add
on the Indianapolis Colts. I actually think they're relatively speaking,
maybe the least interesting team in the league.
Speaker 2 (01:33:59):
No, no, no.
Speaker 1 (01:34:00):
Well, the Saints, I mean Saints still exist. The Saints
are the chiefs of uninteresting, Like the Chiefs are just
the most interesting or one of the uh, the Saints
are uninteresting. I'll say that the Cults are like the
uh the Bills to the chiefs of uninteresting. So uh
so yeah, they're they're They're not very good, and I
(01:34:22):
just I find nothing remotely at all interesting about them.
By the way, I think they actually play this year. No,
they don't, Thank goodness, that would be the the I
don't think that one's uh, you know, getting the Prime
TV treatment. If you have more than one screen. Lastly
from Saturday, just a couple quick thoughts on the state
(01:34:42):
of the Giants quarterback battle as Jackson Dart. Second straight
game where he got meaningful snaps, meaningful playing time uh
and second straight game where he actually looked pretty good uh.
Coming off a game against the Bills in the first
preseason game, second game for team of sixteen, passing one
hundred and thirty seven yards one TD. Kind of worth noting,
(01:35:05):
you know, Russell Wilson had a couple of nice deep
balls as well. Now he's still through an interception. Obviously,
Russell Wilson's gonna be your Week one starter. I don't
think any of us expect it to be a long
term situation. But Jackson Dart, I'll be quick on this.
I think he's getting some run. You know, at some
point this season, Brian Dable's going to be coaching for
(01:35:26):
his job. He needs to sell that there is a
future and that he should be part of it. Jackson
Dart is really the only pathway to get.
Speaker 2 (01:35:33):
There, that's right. And if he could show some development
in Jackson Dart even from one point to the next,
depending on how much he's able to play during the
course of the season, then he might be able to
sell ownership on getting another year. It's like, look what
I did with him in year one, Give me some
more time with him and we might have something special here.
(01:35:54):
What they can't do is just be completely dull with
Jackson Dart in at quarterback. Whenever that move happens, I
think it probably happens. I think I said Packers come
to New York on the sixteenth, maybe you make that move.
Then maybe you've already made it. But Russell Wilson knows
he wasn't being brought there to be the starter all year,
(01:36:14):
or certainly not going past this year. So he'll go
in there. He'll hold the ship up for a little while.
They're not going to be very good, and then Dart's
going to get in and that's when you're going to
see kind of the hope arise, hopefully for Giants fans
who've been waiting for a while to see a quarterback
that might excite them, and Dart might be that guy.
But I do think that this is Dables' best shot
(01:36:37):
to hold on to that job pretty much his only shot.
Whatever he does is Russell Wilson's not going to mean anything.
Speaker 1 (01:36:43):
Don't disagree again, Jackson Dart on Saturday against the Jets.
It is only the preseason, fourteen of sixteen passing one
hundred and thirty seven yards, one touchdown for those scoring
at home, or for those like Arnie Spanner who bet
on the preseason. The Giants did win thirty one to
two twelve against the New York Jets. Fox Sports Radio

ten they're basically proposing Jymart we'll call it the Oprah playoff.

read on the podcast in a minute, but you need
to be downloading the podcast, we've given some bowl college football.
(01:38:00):
We previewed the a FC East, we previewed the AFC East,
a bunch of other stuff. We'll we'll we'll make sure
to download the podcast. Tell you what, j Bart, We
we briefly glossed over this in our one. Let's do
the official deep dive. By the way, oh, we just
got a little bit of pseudo late breaking news. Jim
(01:38:23):
Harbaugh was asked at the postgame press conference tonight about
the about the situation in Michigan. He said, like I
said to you last year, not engaging, not engaging. So
Jim Harbaugh that that that that awful ten year ban
from coaching college football, eve though he was never coming back.
(01:38:45):
We talked about Michigan. Make sure to check that out
in the podcast. Tell you what, j Bart, Well, we
have not talked about this preposterous Big ten playoff proposal. Okay,
so let's I'll give you a little context and then
we'll go from there. So we know Big twelve, Big Ten.
We know college football went to a twelve team playoff
this year. This offseason, there has been a back and
(01:39:08):
forth on getting to sixteen teams, and there's big disagreement
with the Big Ten in the SEC. The SEC basically
wants five conference champs, eleven eleven at large bids. The
Big Ten wants this convoluted setup with guaranteed bids and
then there's playing games. It's just very confusing. Well, I
bring it up because don't know if we'll get to sixteen.
(01:39:30):
But on Saturday morning, Pete Thamil, reporting from ESPN, quote,
the Big Ten has considered an idea for massive expansion
of the college football playoff that will grow the postseason
to twenty four or twenty eight teams. As I said
before the break, let's just call it the Oprah Playoff.
You get a bid, you get a bid, You get
(01:39:52):
a bid, You lousy eighth place, Big ten team, come
on in. You know, it's like Ellis Island. Get me
your sick, you're poor, your huddled mass. That's the college
football playoff in the Big Tens world. What was your
reaction when you saw this and how much did you
throw up in your mouth?
Speaker 2 (01:40:10):
Because this is disgusting, all of all of the vomit
that that one could find. As a matter of fact,
my daughter's been sick this week. So this is to
get a win.
Speaker 1 (01:40:22):
To this report, before everybody else did.
Speaker 2 (01:40:24):
Or this is what's funny. So she had she was
sick on like midweek, She was sick Tuesday, and she
was still a little sick Wednesday. Everything was pretty good
by Wednesday night, Thursday, Friday, everything was good. Today tonight,
this afternoon, she gets home from a swim lesson and
she's sick and looks sicker than she has at any
(01:40:48):
point during the week. And I have to think that
she read this article. I have to think that these
things are that these things are related. Quite frankly, I
just do we have to tweak it so much that
that college football just doesn't exist anymore? Like we don't
(01:41:08):
need to add teams to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament
because we've already devalued almost everything that happens in the
regular season. College football's a regular season remains the greatest
thing on earth because it's the amount of games, first
of all, which means you just don't have many opportunities
to lose and still end up where you want to.
(01:41:29):
And then it feels exclusive. Now. I was all for
growing it to some extent, and I'm okay with growing
it a little bit more than this than what it
is currently but not anywhere near twenty four to twenty
I mean, did we not see in the games that
we saw last year? This is not a sport that's
deep enough to field this. It's just not. And so
(01:41:51):
I don't need to see middle of the road big
conference teams from the Big Ten and e SEC that
shouldn't have an opportunity to play for a championship still
have that opportunity. They did in the regular season, they
didn't do enough. I'm fine with seeing the cream of
the crop, even three four five teams from those conferences
(01:42:14):
if they have earned it. But like this idea of
guaranteed seven bids a piece for the Big Ten and
the SEC five for the ACC and like going through
all this deal, it only still only leads like three
at larges. So it's even more obvious what you're trying
to do here. But more than anything else, you're watering
(01:42:34):
down both your regular season and your playoff because it
no longer feels nearly as difficult to get there. And
I do not see any advantage in doing this, which
is why I wonder, to your point earlier in the show,
whether or not this is legitimate or if this is
some kind of a strategy on the part of the
(01:42:56):
Big Ten. But I guess time will tell. I hope
that this never happens. Let's say that.
Speaker 1 (01:43:02):
Yeah, for people who missed it earlier. You know, my
I don't even know if this is a take. It
was just kind of a thought that floated through my
head when you see this. By the way, I'll add
this too. I think multiple other college football kind of
insider news reporters, whatever basically hinted that the Big Ten
has a lot of proposals out there and this is
(01:43:23):
just one of them. Let me see. Nicole Auerback from
NBC Sports tweeted the Big Ten is indeed in the
very early stages of discussing the idea of a twenty
eighteen playoff, source confirms to NBC Sports, as ESPN reported,
would eliminate conference championship games whatever. Ross Dellinger from Yahoo
had something pretty similar where he said, like, look, Big
(01:43:45):
ten has a bunch of ideas out there, doesn't mean
it's gonna happen. Let's see what he said really quick,
I should have had these up. Multiple twenty plus team
CFP models are under discussion deriving from the Big Ten,
playing sources tell Yahoo. As ESPN reported and it says
discussessions are very early, could trigger conference title game eliminations,
blah blah blah blah. So for people who missed it earlier,
(01:44:07):
I guess my first kind of thought was, it does
feel like the Big Ten and the SEC are at
a true impass. And for people who don't follow this
day to day, the Big Ten in the SEC basically
have all the power. They're going to decide what the
future of the regular season looks like, postseason looks like,
et cetera, et cetera, And it seems like they're truly
at an impass in how they get to sixteen teams
(01:44:30):
for a potential college football playoff. And so my first
reaction is, is this some sort of Big Ten way
of saying, Hey, you know you don't like our proposal, Well,
here's a real crazy one. And then, obviously, anyone who's
ever done any degree of negotiation knows, you know, you
throw out something that you don't actually want to try
(01:44:52):
to get what you do want. And I wonder if
this is to a degree them trying to get them
trying to get the playoff format that they want at sixteen.
But yeah, I'm with you, and I'll say two things.
Is one, agree with everything you said. I already felt
like the college football regular season. I don't know that
it was quote unquote water down last year. As much
(01:45:14):
as what it was, it just didn't mean as much
on a week tweak basis. It just didn't. You know,
we've talked about it. You know, Alabama loses to Vandy,
that is a game that in theory could hang over
your head all year. Well, guess what. They lose to
Tennessee a few weeks later, and they still would have
been in the playoff if they could have been in
a lousy Oklahoma team on the road. And oh, by
the way, even after they lost to Oklahoma, they were
(01:45:35):
still trying to make the argument that they should have
gotten in and were the first team left out of
the college football playoff. So if you're talking about not
certainly doubling, not quite tripling the field, and with seven
auto bids for the Big ten in the SEC, it's
just embarrassing. And it's just I don't even know, like,
(01:45:56):
what are we even playing for at this point. I
can't add anything other than I just hope to Goodness
gracious that this is nothing that's actually being taken seriously,
and again, you're allowed to propose whatever you want. I'm
sure there's a lot of different models out there. I
just hope this is one that nobody's actually taken seriously.
Speaker 2 (01:46:16):
Yeah, I mean, it's just I don't see. I would
be curious to hear what someone who would be in
favor of this, how they would argue this to be
a good thing in any way, shape or form. It
just doesn't fit pretty much in any way. Like, there's
not there's not really an advantage here. You're gonna make
(01:46:38):
a ton of money either way. But if your postseason
continues to get watered down, like you had a lot
of complaints for people about those first round games, even
the second round games for the most part in the
playoff this past year, imagine adding a few more rounds
behind that with teams that don't have household names and
(01:46:59):
just did almost nothing particularly impressive during the regular season.
But somebody has to fill those slots from those conferences.
So we're gonna put X, Y and Z and I
just know no, just no, like, just keep the regular season,
keep things kind of where they are, but add a
couple more teams. I'm good with that, But we got
to slow this thing down. So again, I hope your idea,
(01:47:21):
at least your theory is right, that there is something
more behind this. I hope that this is not just
some giant cash grab by these two big conferences who
at some point just need to split off and form
their own league, because that's ultimately what they're doing is
just basically trying to make sure that all of their
bread is buttered across their entire conference.
Speaker 1 (01:47:43):
That report via ESPN a twenty four to twenty eight
team playoff model. Yeah, let's all hope that doesn't happen.
Fox Sports Radio aer toords Jason Martin, broadcasting live from
the Fox Sports Radio studios, will come back when we
do the interview that broke the Internet earlier this week.
We'll discuss that next first though, final time this evening,
(01:48:06):
Steve Disager, what's trending.
Speaker 9 (01:48:07):
As you talk about all this college football late season?
The NFL still plays in December, right, I mean, it's
a great point.
Speaker 1 (01:48:14):
Well, and if I can jump in on that really quick,
I actually felt like the college football playoff lost steam
the deeper it got because we all I love college football,
but we got to that divisional round weekend it's like, I,
you know, I gotta worry about Bill's Ravens before I
could even start thinking about college football. I think we
(01:48:35):
got to end the thing earlier, not later. Now, part
of that's a calendar, but now you're adding two more rounds,
two more weeks.
Speaker 9 (01:48:42):
And some games were shoved to cable already, and going
up against NFL and being anonymous.
Speaker 1 (01:48:47):
And to Jay Mart's point, it's all about money. It's
not like we're gonna decrease the regular season to increase
the postseason. So you're gonna be going even later into January.
And to your point to Sager, the NFL has owned
December for fifty years and they're not giving it.
Speaker 9 (01:49:02):
Up, including Saturdays in late December, bingo. So unless you
want to play all your games on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday nights.
Speaker 1 (01:49:10):
And that was another thing that I thought hurt too.
I keep cutting you off. I'm very sorry it felt.
I remember, and I say this respectfully. I hope it
isn't taking the wrong way. I remember talking to Martin
Weiss about it. It's like, oh, yeah, there's games on
like Thursday this week, and like we're both college football
fans and we didn't know when the next round of
games was because they were being played on all these
(01:49:31):
random days.
Speaker 9 (01:49:32):
Well, we did have plenty of NFL exhibitions today, including
the late game at Denver, which went to the Broncos
twenty seven to seven over Arizona. Most of the scoring
in the first half Jared Stidham with two touchdown passes.
Apparently coach Sean Payton led his quarterbacks coach Davis Webb
call this game. We do have a couple more games
tomorrow on the preseason slate. Tyler Schuck will start at
(01:49:53):
quarterback at New Orleans for the day game as the
Saints host the Jaguars, and there is a game on
Fox TV Tomorrow night, eight Bills at Bears, and then
one more on Monday night to finish out the weekend,
and then next weekend that's it for the preseason. We'll
get a couple of games on Thursday, a few more
on Friday, the twenty second, plenty of games next Saturday,
including the late game Raiders at Cardinals, and that will
(01:50:16):
be it for the NFL preseason next Saturday night. The
Raiders lost at home in Vegas today twenty two to
nineteen to San Francisco, which kicked a fifty nine yard
field goal on the final play after getting a pick
to regain possession. So Jake Moody had three field goals
just in the last ten minutes from forty four, fifty
(01:50:36):
and fifty nine yards out. Moody five of six on
field goals the Rams. Stetson Bennett played at quarterback all
night in LA, including throwing the game winning touchdown to
beat the Chargers twenty three to twenty two. That game
winner with five seconds left. Bennett finished with three hundred
twenty four yards passing three touchdowns one interception. Miami wonted
(01:50:56):
Detroit twenty four to seventeen, but running back Jalen through
two contests has twelve carries just nineteen yards for the Dolphins. Meanwhile,
rookie Ali Gordon with fifty yards rushing on ten carries
for Miami. Today. We got some carries for Nick Chubb
in Houston today the Texans won twenty to three over Carolina.
Chubb five carries, twenty five yards. Panthers quarterback Bryce Young
(01:51:19):
oh of two passing. Andy Dalton came on but suffered
what appears to be a right elbow sprain. According to
the team, he will undergo further evaluation. On Sunday, the
Milwaukee Brewers won their fourteenth game in a row and
eleven inning victory six to five at Cincinnati. Cubs beat
Pittsburgh three to one. The Phillies were shut out two
(01:51:40):
nothing at Washington, and Ace pitcher Zach Wheeler goes on
the injured list. Mets beat Seattle three to one. AL
East wins for Toronto, Boston, and the Yankees, who won
twelve eight at Saint Louis. Houston's the best in the
West at the moment in the AL game and a
half lead over Seattle. Houston won in twelve innings five
to four against Baltimore, and Yes, the Dodgers are alone
(01:52:03):
and first in the NL West again after shutting out
the Padres six nothing. The win to Blake Snell, the
loss to Dylan c who's five and eleven he walks
six in three and a third Padre is a game back.
They'll play at LA again tomorrow. Golf's playoffs continue at
the BMW Championship. Robert McIntyre with a four stroke lead
over Scottie Scheffler. The Live Golf event is in Indianapolis
(01:52:25):
this week and Dustin Johnson is now tied for the
lead with Sebastian Munoz. Back to you.
Speaker 1 (01:52:30):
Thank you very much, Steve de Seger, have a great evening.
The boys will see you tomorrow. Arnie Spaniard Chris Plank,
who were in obviously before us. We appreciate them filling
in before our show. And of course Mark Willard and

pretty big podcast this week. Yess you may have heard
(01:53:36):
the young lady singing right there. Taylor Swift appeared on
her boyfriend's podcast which is done with his brother New
Heights Podcast Jason Kelsey, Travis Kelsey, Mary Mack. What did
Taylor Swift have to say on that show so that I.
Speaker 7 (01:53:55):
Became like a person who was running through the halls
of my house screaming we.
Speaker 2 (01:54:00):
DRAFTEDXA if You're worthy?
Speaker 1 (01:54:02):
And I wasn't like, what is who?
Speaker 2 (01:54:05):
Body snatched you?
Speaker 5 (01:54:06):
This is?
Speaker 2 (01:54:07):
This is?
Speaker 5 (01:54:08):
What do you mean?
Speaker 9 (01:54:09):
We drafted You're worthy?
Speaker 5 (01:54:11):
I forget where it was, but you were the first
person to tell me that.
Speaker 9 (01:54:16):
I was screeching.
Speaker 6 (01:54:17):
I couldn't believe it.
Speaker 2 (01:54:18):
I was freaking out. We're talking about.
Speaker 5 (01:54:20):
Either I'm like, wait, did she she write?
Speaker 2 (01:54:22):
I had to look this up.
Speaker 5 (01:54:23):
I'm like, she does she get the wrong information here?
Speaker 2 (01:54:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:54:26):
We traded up?
Speaker 2 (01:54:27):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:54:28):
That was Taylor Swift on the New Heights Podcast literally
broke YouTube most set a record for most concurrent views
at one time. Trying to find uh the actual tally
on total views of that episode so far seventeen million
(01:54:48):
views and counting from three days ago. I'll be honest,
j Mart, I have not listened to it yet, but
all the clips that I've heard, including that one, and
Taylor Swift seems like a sweet girl. I'm sorry. Like
I know, Hollywood gets to a lot of people, she
does not strike me as that kind of person. I
(01:55:09):
could be totally wrong. I know I shouldn't go off
interviews or podcasts or whatever, but I think she comes
off as as really genuine. And I'll add this to
the very few clips that I've heard and the clips
that I've seen. Actually, I think that the relationship that
she has comes off as genuine as well. I think
we both thought. Not we you and I both thought,
(01:55:31):
but I think a lot of people thought that they
were both using each other for exposure. You know, Taylor
Swift to have a whole new album of songs to write,
Travis Kelcey to blow up his personal brand. They seem
like a sweet couple. I'll just say this. The two
kids seem like they really are into each other. Again.
I might actually check out the podcast at some point,
but it did drop on Thursday and it was record setting.
Speaker 2 (01:55:55):
Yeah, so I agree with you. Basically, I think it's genuine,
and I think she's genuine at this point in this situation.
And one of the reasons why is because so much
of what she has done has been manufactured and you know,
very focused, tested and very phony. Quite frankly, a lot
of her career has felt a lot felt phony, and
(01:56:16):
it's been easy to spot like it hasn't. She's not
like a world class actress as it relates to that.
So listening to what I've heard of this podcast, I've
never listened to their podcast, and I don't doubt that
I'm actually going to go listen to this in its entirety,
But what I've heard sounds genuine because and that exavier
(01:56:37):
what do they cut now, I've heard that a couple
of times, Like that makes sense. Now, could you have said,
could you have like set all that up and told
her what to say and all that you could have?
But I don't think she could have pulled it off
that way. Like I don't think that she would have
sounded that way. These are just two people that seem
like their friends first, and this relationship that they have have,
(01:57:01):
I think that's the best kind of relationships, are the
ones that are They're not just one thing, they're a
bunch of things. But one of the great things is
that they want to be around each other more than
they want to be doing much else, And so when
they talk, there is a way to listen to it
where it is. It's bantery, it's conversational. Chemistry is the
(01:57:23):
wrong word because it connotes more of a romantic side.
In this case, I think it's just you can tell
these two people like one another. You can tell that
neither one of them is being coached on how to
sound like they like one another. You can spot that
from a mile away. We just can't, and I think,
especially in this case, because we're looking for it to
be fake. H We're looking for it to be phony
(01:57:44):
because to your point, when it started, it felt like
a partnership of convenience, and it was the over under
on how long it was going to last, and all
this well, it's already lasted longer than most people probably
would have thought because whatever benefit the two we're going
to get off one another, it's kind of over. Like
there's not that much more that they're going to be
(01:58:05):
able to gain at this point from continuing. And here's
the other thing. Taylor Swift's entire career has been about
endings that don't go very well. Her entire music career
has been stories of breakups and independent woman stuff and
trying to rise above scumbags and all this other kind
(01:58:26):
of stuff that she's done. This goes against that completely,
Like this is not her brand. It's never been her brand.
What I'm curious to see is when this new album drops,
is it going to have a different tone. Because from
everything that I could gather, the Tortured Poets Society was
just like all the rest of them. So is she
(01:58:47):
going to keep that character going or is she actually
going to show some kind of a maturity and growth
where it's like, oh, okay, yeah, there's something has shifted
here and that's the kind of thing that can happen.
And I said this to know the other day. I
had two daughters and I would love for them to
listen to Taylor Swift music down the road, and me
(01:59:08):
feel good about that because she was offering them something
positive that they could aspire to, because I don't know
that much of the music that she's put out has
actually done that. So I think that's the big thing.
But generally now I'm just rooting for it, like I'm
rooting for it to be real, and I'm rooting for
them for them to be happy forever. Quite frankly, I
think that's the best ending, and I feel a lot
(01:59:30):
better just going into the season, you'd start to think
about It's like she's probably been at way more football
games than she would have had to. She could have
excused herself out as so much of this, and she
hasn't done it. So I'm all for it now, I'm
all in favor of it.
Speaker 1 (01:59:45):
Tell you what, that's a great way to wrap the show.
We got it, gotta get out of here. Want to
thank the crew, Mary Mack with some great music on
the board. Appreciate all your help. Producer Brandon for Steve
Disager and Bree on the update desk, and my partner
Jason Martin. I'm Mayra Torres. Make sure to down the podcast.
Coming up next Bernie Fratto of The Bernie Fratto Show.
This is Fox Sport.
Speaker 2 (02:00:05):
Tune you
