Speaker 1 (00:01):
You don't listening no Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Well that's right, you heard the man. It is that
time of week. My name is Bernie Fraddle. We are
coming to live from the Fox Sports Radio studios here
in Las Vegas. We'll take up to three am Pacific,
six am Eastern, an absolute jam pack show. You think
the Dodgers have been dominant, Well I'll tell you just
how dominant they've been. Don't worry. We're gonna get to it.

(00:24):
I got about eight hours worth of stuff tonight. We'll
try to fit it into four. You know, the Chinese
have a no proverb that states, may you live in
interesting times? And when you take a look at this
college football season, this may be the most remarkable season,
newsworthy season that I can remember in a long long time.
Now less you think I'm defending James Franklin, and I'm not.

(00:48):
And we're gonna get to this a little later in
the show. Get the peeps to check in. There are
objective truths and there are personal feelings, and sometimes you
have to look at both. Just think about it. You
take over a program in twenty fourteen that was in
the doldrums two years removed from the jury to Sandusky debacle,
and I mean debacle. He spent the rest of his

(01:10):
days in an orange jumpsuit. And you turn the program
around just like you did in Vanderbilt one oh four
and forty five, fresh off of playoff last year, twenty
sixteen Big ten champions, four New Year's Day bull victories,
six seasons with ten or more wins, five seasons finishing
in the AP Top ten, seven seasons finishing in the

(01:30):
AP Top twenty. But I get it. Here comes the
big butt peewee. He was two and twenty against AP
top five teams, second worst than college football, and four
and twenty one against top ten teams. Those kind of losses, well,
they can get you fired, especially if you have designs
on telling everybody you're gonna win a national championship. This

(01:52):
team was built just like Michigan two years ago, in
Ohio State last year. But I digress. He didn't just
lose games. It looks like you lost the locker room.
But be careful what you wish for. It'll be interesting
to see where Tenant, Tennessee, where Penn State goes from here.
But shed no tears for James Franklin. They're paying him

(02:13):
fifty million dollars to go away. That's right. Until twenty
thirty one. He'll make six hundred and sixty seven thousand
dollars a month, one hundred and fifty nine thousand dollars
per week, twenty two thousand dollars per day, nine hundred
and thirteen dollars per hour. And in the last two
minutes that it took me to give this dissertation on

(02:35):
James Franklin, he made thirty one dollars. And in the
time it took me to say that, he made twenty
five cents per second. We'll get to that later. Meanwhile,
Kurt Signetti, it's good to be Kurt Signetti. Five years ago,
James Madison hires him four hundred and twenty five grand
a year. It's more than a lot of people make.
Two years ago, Indiana, they said, Kurt, we want you

(02:57):
to come coach for us. We'll pay you four and
a half million last year. At this time, we like Kurt.
We're going to extend him eight million annually. Tuesday or Thursday,
I think it was we gold to you, Kurt, we
googled you. You win. We're going to up you to
eleven point six million annually for eight years and I

(03:19):
was your day and I told you man that this
is a crazy college year. What wasn't so crazy, though,
is something that was relatively expected. Death taxes and teams
running the ball against USC. Notre Dame had a nice
month Saturday ran for three three hundred and fifteen yards,
forty six receiving yards, one hundred yard kickoff return. Judarian

(03:43):
Price and Jeremiah Love said, sc see, you wouldn't want
to be just all of the days where rain pouring
didn't matter. Marcus Freeman leans on his running back duo
and the Iriny is USC used to be running back?
You and the Irish run thirty four to twenty four.
It was evident very early, and it's been evident the

(04:05):
whole four years that Lincoln Roaldy has been there that
USC's defensive front doesn't stop the run the kind of did.
He gets Michigan, but I don't know if Michigan's that
good and Lincoln Rowley got a little cute, So I
don't think they'll be going to the playoffs this year.
But we'll see what Colin Coward has to say Monday.
He's the foremost authority on this. How about Alabama and

(04:26):
by the way. One last thing, can you imagine if
you're James Franklin three weeks ago, you're leading Oregon in
overtime and you lose, okay, and I signed on that
night and says, yeah, what do you expect? Penn State
doesn't win these games? But at least you never really
hear about them losing to the Appalachian States or you know,
Northern Canada. And then they lose the next two games

(04:47):
in unceremonious fashion, and he's gone. Everybody has forgotten by
now that Alabama got trucked by Florida State a month ago,
six weeks ago. Florida State's three and three. They're about
to go th it's reinforced at stinky Stanford. But since then, remember,
in life, it's it's not what happens, it's how you react.

(05:07):
Four opponents, up, four ranked opponents, up four ranked opponents
down Right now, the eyeball's telling me that Alabama is
the best team in the SEC. They polished off a
very tough stretch any team has faced this season with
a solid thirty seven to twenty victory over Tennessee and
they've beaten now Georgia, Vanderbilt, Missouri, and Tennessee in successive weeks.

(05:32):
And don't look now, Ty Simpson, he is as good
as shot you know him, Fernando, depending on who you
the flavor of the week is, he's right there in
the Heisman mix to win the Heisman Trophy. How about
Texas A and M. They're actually undefeated and they just
wait for you to make a mistake and then they

(05:54):
find a way to beat you. And not a lot
of people are talking about them. They have a couple
of tough road games coming up, and if they win
those next two road games, everybody will be, you know,
riding that bandwagon, just like the Indiana one, which is
very well deserved, by the way I think this Indiana
team what they did to Oregon last week. And of course,
you know the Michigan State game today was a scrimmage.

(06:16):
But or Saturday, Sorry State fans, good luck with Jonathan C. Smith.
It didn't work with John L. Smith back in the day.
So you tried John C. Smith. How's that working out
for you? But the thing about Texas A and M
is now that they are someone under the radar if
you can believe it, because two years ago we talked

(06:38):
about their thirty five million dollars an aile program, and
they just can't couldn't quite get over the hump. But
all of a sudden, now you have to pay attention
to them. Big props to Arizona State. The situation can
be summed up this way. To be the man, you
got to beat the man. I just told Rick Flair's
iconic motto, right, But Arizona State is reminding everybody that's

(07:02):
still the case. See through the first seven weeks of
the season, Texas Tech, who everybody raved about, including me,
their nil program, and this was going to be their year.
They had basically been not only winning their games, they
actually they had been dominating their opponents by larger margins
than any other team in the country. The closest games

(07:22):
that Texas Tech had experienced were back to back twenty
four point road wins at Utah and Houston, and then
they ran into the Sun Devils who held a two
score lead, and they held on to win twenty six
to twenty two. Now, I don't think the Big twelve
is the best power conference in the country, but it
might be one of the most entertaining and unpredictable on

(07:44):
a week to week basis. So keep an eye on
that because we're in the playoff era and you don't
have to go undefeated. And one of the things that
this new playoff realignment sort of conglomeration that's given us
are pretty cool matchups every week that we weren't used
to getting year over year, and they're all they become

(08:05):
kind of de factor playoff games. What was the narrative
going into the Notre Dame SC game Saturday, the loser
you could probably cancee your playoff hopes. So that was
a de factor playoff game. You know, I don't think
Michigan can lose another game, right, how about Georgia? Better
late than never? Kirby Martz says, you're gonna have to
kill us. Well, maybe there's something to this because Lane

(08:27):
Kiffin and old missus A has a whether they like
them or not, they've got a legitimate offense. And they
hung thirty five points on Kirby Smart's team through the
first three quarters. And of course Lane Kiffen, who never
saw a microphone who didn't like told the officials, hey,
this is kind of starting to look like a scrimmage. Well,

(08:47):
they did score touchdowns on their first five drives of
the game. The only other teams to do that against
Kirby Smart where like I think Ohio State or somebody.
It doesn't matter, but games don't. It's a four quarter
foootball game, Lane, not a three quarter game. And Kirby
Smart showed why they are still going to be reckoned

(09:08):
with in the sec that defense put on a clinic
in the fourth quarter. They allowed Lane Kiffin and that
high powered offense thirteen total yards. Meanwhile, Georgia put up
seventeen points one by eight. Cover the number. In case
you are so inclined. How about Vanderbilt. You know, the
last time they were favored over LSU is nineteen forty seven.

(09:32):
I'm just full of stats here tonight. But they're racking
up accomplishments we haven't seen teams do in this new era.
You gotta love Diego Pavia. He's a magic man. Now.
Vanderbilts all of a sudden six and one. They haven't
been six and one since nineteen fifty. But again we digress.

(09:52):
So you've got teams like Vanderbilt in Indiana and Cincinnati.
I'm not even gonna waste my time talking about House State.
You know how good they are. They're ridiculous and the
defense is ridiculous, and so is Julian saying, you know
who's ridiculous On the other way, Brian Kelly, I don't
know what happened to LSU, except the same thing always

(10:14):
happens to the LSU. All Right, here's the problem, here's
what Brian Kelly's dealing with, and he signed up for it,
and he had to know it. The three LSU coaches
before Brian Kelly, Nick Saban, Les Miles and ed Oordron
all won a national title by year four. If there
isn't all of a sudden, the miraculous, shocking turnaround of

(10:35):
which I can't see the next seven weeks, Brian Kelly
wanh wah wah wah wah. And I don't know if
he'll reach it in year five, because I don't know
if there will be a year five. Not not predicting
he'll be fired again. We're in a weird We're in
a weird, weird era of college football. But not happy

(11:00):
to LSU, not not at all. And they're not happy
in Clemson either. Just a year ago, at this time
Clets it was six to one. They beat Virginia forty
eight to thirty one. That seems like a long long
time ago. Don McLean. It just continues. The hit parrade
just continues. By the way, give it up, Give it

(11:20):
up to Jeff Brown and Louisville knocking Miami out the
other night. So look, I got eight hours worth of
stuff tonight, I'm gonna try to stuff it into four.
And we have a hell of a at NFL slate
coming up. I'm gonna bring down one of my favorites
here works alongside Brent Musburger, a longtime NFL insider. My
man Amal Shaw is going to join us here. We'll

(11:41):
do a little rapid fire lightning round fashion and go
over some of these NFL games on the slate this weekend.

NFL insider. His work includes the fact he worked alongside
Brent Musburger. This welcome in. I'mal Shaw Malhall, are you buddy?

Speaker 5 (13:24):
I'm doing well, Bernie.

Speaker 6 (13:25):
Thank you buddy.

Speaker 5 (13:25):
How are you good.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
I'm glad to have you because we've got a lot
to get to and we got to do it quick.
But well we got we got some time. So let's
dive into this. Before I get into the slate that
kicks off at about seven hours and ten minutes, I
want to get your quick take on Thursday night's game.
You saw two veteran quarterbacks zinging around the field, and
I think it's an indictment on some of the iron

(13:47):
quarterbacks coming up because these guys came up when you
could actually hit the quarterback and receivers took their life
in their hands running across the middle. And I think
they learned to play the game in a little bit
more of a violent air.

Speaker 5 (14:00):
Oh, there's no question about it. I mean, you know
when you see some of the receivers, they get the benefit.
I always said the Minneapolis miracle when Stefan Diggs caught
that pass for the Vikings, it would have never happened
in the early two thousands or nineties or eighties because
the safety would have come over and just absolutely decapitated him.
But now you're so afraid of getting a fifteen yard penalty.

(14:22):
You see it all the time, guys in college. They've
done a pretty good job of kind of leading with
their shoulder instead of the crown of their helmet. But
you see, you remember the play when Vin she Young.
I remember because Tom Coughlin could criticized Matthias Kiwanuka for
not finishing the sack on Vin Shung and then Tennessee
ended up winning the game against the Giants. I always
contend the reason why keiwan Nuka didn't slam him to
the ground was because they become so they find these

(14:44):
players on the defensive side of the ball, they give
you a penalty for no reason. I think it's very
difficult playing on that side of the ball, so you
take a cautious approach, and with that being said, it
gets the offense cart blanche in terms of being able
to attack and to be able to do things down
the field. And Bernie, I don't know about you, but
I've gotten into the habit of probably last half a
dozen years, and this drives me nuts to the NFL.

(15:04):
Every incomplete pass, I am scanning in the field, or
I'm waiting for iron Eagle or somebody else to tell
me there's a flag on the playforf.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
Oh especially I had kick returns especially. Yes, it never fails.
Somebody busts a long run and this one's coming back,
all right, I digress. Let's look ahead seven hours from
now the Rams and London Jacksonville Rams laying We're laying three.
I think some RAM actions come in no Puka and Nakua,
which I think puts a lot of stress on matt

(15:33):
Stafford when you consider the Jags have a run defense
allows only ninety one yards per game. Feels like a
defensive game. The number is right where it should be.
I think you can make a case for both sides.
It looks like some RAM action has come in. What
are your thoughts?

Speaker 5 (15:49):
Yeah, I actually lean towards a little bit here in
terms of the Jaguars, Yes, you mentioned it. I think
the loss of Puka Nakua is immense. DeVante Adam is
still a very good receiver, but he's no longer elite
in my opinion. But we see the safety valve and
the belief that Matthew Stafford has and Kuka Nkua makes
a huge difference for the Rams. Kyron Williams, remember he

(16:09):
had that bad game against the forty nine ers where
he dropped a pass in the flat that would have
gotten him a first down, they had a fumble or
he had a fumble.

Speaker 7 (16:16):
Excuse me.

Speaker 5 (16:17):
So it's not that you know the Rams aren't capable
of winning this game. I just look at the fact
that you're going all the way from Los Angeles. I
know they go earlier in the week, but that's a
long travel compared to Jacksonville Jagiere coming off. You know,
they had a win against Kansas City. They leased to Seattle,
but I think there's still some positive momentum for this
team that hasn't been there in the past, and I
think that's something they can build upon. And this is

(16:39):
kind of a benchmark game if you're the Jaguars, if
you're going to be a team that wants to make
contender for the postseason in the AFC, you've got to
be able to beat a team like the Rams, who
are going to probably be in the playoffs in the NFC.

Speaker 2 (16:50):
Yeah, I can't lie actually fired on the Jags. They
didn't farewell against Seattle last week, but I feel like
they've rebound him. They've played like fifteen games in London,
so I think they've figured it out what to do there.
Saints at the Bears. Now, this is a funny line
because it opened up the Bears were laying about five
and a half and a ton of Saints money has
come in. I'm not a fan of hothouse teams going

(17:13):
into a cool weather place. But the Saints aren't great,
but they play hard. And if you look at the
Bears of the Mall, they've beaten the hapless Raiders, the
hapless Cowboys, and Washington handed him the game last week.
So I'm nowhere near anywhere near as high as the
Bears as some folks are. Your thoughts on this game, yeah,
I tend to agree with you.

Speaker 5 (17:32):
The number surprised me a little bit in terms of
the Bears being, you know, three three and a half
points favorite, depending on where you look, generally about three
and a half. You mentioned it, though, I think, and
I'm a guy that puts great stock in this who
you've beaten is important to me because sometimes you know,
whether it's at the collegiate level at the professional level,
teams get that on day playing bad opponents. And if

(17:53):
you're doing that, maybe you're not as good as you
think you are. And I think this could be the
case with the Chicago Bears just haven't beaten quality opponents'
let's see what happens. You mentioned in Washington hand of
them the game last week, so let's see how this
one plays. I didn't play this game.

Speaker 6 (18:09):
I don't have an.

Speaker 5 (18:09):
Opinion one where the other on this matchup.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
I will say this, the Saints play hard, and it
turns out Kellen Morcan coach, and I think he's got
a lot out of a Spencer Ratt, So it would
not surprise me if the Saints win that game outright.
The one game that has a lot of interest for
being apparently a lot of folks, the Cleveland Browns laying
two and a half against the Dolphins. I can't lie.

(18:34):
I really like Cleveland here a lot. It's going to
be rainy and windy. That's not good for Tua. Cleveland's
defensive front can stop the run and Cleveland Cleveland can
actually run the ball, So I feel like that's the difference.
You get a nice cozy line at home minus two
and a half.

Speaker 5 (18:50):
Your thoughts, Yeah, I like the number under the field
goal here. You can't take Miami that spot. I mean
they take the money line to play. Obviously, you still
rather have two and a half in the money line necessarily,
but to me, it's surprising when I look at this number.
I like the Browns you mentioned defensively, with the team's
capable go back to Week one, they should have beaten Cincinnati.
We all know that they missed the field goals, and

(19:12):
I believe in extra point that game as well. You know,
they did a nice job at home against the Packers
the other loss of the Ravens were fully healthy when
they took care of business in Baltimore against them, and
the line beat them handily. But they were in a
tight game in Minnesota, the London game, and then the
Steelers game. They struggled with Dylan Gabriel. But now it's
getting a little bit more extensive. Not going to think
that act like you've got a plesor of experience, but

(19:34):
I do think he's in a position to be more
effective and more successful. Now, I'll tell you one thing, Bernie,
this Miami Dolphins team defensively couldn't plug a league.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
You're you're so right, and listen whenever Kevin Stefanski, he's
been in rain win games like this a couple of
times in the last year. A couple of years, they've
run the ball forty forty one times a game. Miami
can't stop the run. So I'm on Cleveland minus two
and a half. We'll see, we'll see what happens. Right,
the Jets catching a point and a half at home

(20:03):
against Caroline, a team that actually think is up and coming.
Dave Canalis has done some good things with Bryce. I
just had a brain cramped to kid out of a monitor. Yeah,
thank you very much. Thanks. I haven't been drinking, honest.
Here's the situation. Though, Justin Fields continued to amaze, and
I say that in tongue in cheek. Of course, fourteen

(20:25):
and thirty five was a starter. He's owned twenty six
when his opponent scores twenty points. The more he's simply
not a major league quarterback. Or the Jets look like
a drunk cross like an icy street. However, I can't
lay points on the road from Caroline, even though they
did beat Atlanta two weeks ago thirty to nothing. I
can't really get a feel for what the outcome of
this game is going to be. Give me your take.

Speaker 5 (20:46):
I kind of agree with you, and I see it
in a similar way. I don't want to lay points
with Carolina on the road is a big difference than
winning at home against Atlanta beating Dallas at home. I
thought the number last week at three and a half
and home was too high. With Carolina getting those points
now going on the road, all of a sudden, I
couldn't justify this team being in a situation where you
want to lay points with them. However, the Jets are

(21:07):
in that situation at the point of the season where
things starts to become business decisions if you know their
fortunes continue in the direction that they've gone. And you
mentioned Justin Fields. You know, obviously I have a bias
towards him because he play at Ohio State. But let
me tell you something. The closest Justin Field should be
to being the starting quarterback in the NFL is that
your first and second string quarterbacks are no longer eligible

(21:28):
to play, are unhealthy. I mean, he just he's not
a quarterback, but this league, you know, I think he's
a guy you can use in some situational spots around
the goal line. His speed is tremendous, but his inconsistency
is inaccuracy is a real detriment. And I'm going to
tell you him and Garrett Wilson were college teammates. But
you're going to eventually see Garrett Wilson's frustration only continue

(21:50):
to rise, and he's doubtful for tomorrow's game with a
knee injury. I don't know if he's going to be
in the lineup. I think there's better spots and better
games out there. And the one thing I'll tell people,
and also you talk about over the years on the show,
is but you don't like the game before it stars
waiting the Indian. You get so many better oppt Thursday night.
You could have gotten the Bengals. I thought they were
great play at home to begin with a five. You

(22:12):
could have gotten ten and a half and a couple
numbers around there in that first half.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
Yeah, divisional dogs at home and standalone games have been
pretty solid. Look one last thing about Justin Fields, because
I like him. I think he's a conferent professional, but
he's had fifty games to prove himself. He's a glorified
read read option quarterback, but he's a college version because
his default mechanism is to run. He just doesn't see
the field. He's late to react, late to release, typically

(22:40):
not very accurate. It's just not good. So enough on that,
all right. New England at Tennessee is an intriguing game
because it's a very tricky line. If I trust my eyes,
because they tell me a lot. New England really actually
looks like a potential playoff team, But you don't want
to lay seven on the road. The National Football League
they got a new coach. I understand some six and
a half's out there now, but I kind of like

(23:03):
cam Ord. He's in a tough situation. But Tennessee is
a hot mester, the worst team in the league. This
isn't like the NBA when you get a new coach
and they play with good the next night. I have
no feel for this game whatsoever. I'll tell you I
could never take the points, but I wouldn't lay him either.
What do you think?

Speaker 8 (23:18):
I tend to.

Speaker 5 (23:19):
Agree with you, but I would if I'm going to
take a risk, probably take away New England if people
are still about to teases, even though they've induced the
heck out of them. At around my minus one twenty five,
in some place, it's much more difficult to play, but
I wouldn't have a problem. Teams in New England down
and normally I have a guy that would tease up.
Here's why if you look at outside of the Arizona game,
where let's be real here, if they score the touchdown,

(23:42):
I forget the running backs name. If he breaks the plane,
it's twenty eight to nine. When yeah, yep, we're not
even having these conversations. This team's oh and six and
they're looking to go oh seven. The other problem is
they made a bad coaching decision at the end of
the first half in the Denver game that allowed the
Broncos to get a touchdown. This is a revenge game
for Mike Rabele fired in Tennessee. They haven't been they

(24:05):
haven't been that competitive.

Speaker 7 (24:06):
In a lot of the games.

Speaker 5 (24:07):
Look, let's put it this way. When you're struggling against
the Raiders, you're in trouble. And that's what the issues
right now with this team. They're just they're just not
that good Tennessee. And we know the Raiders are bad.
And you know, if you'll Bill Parcel's line, you are
what your record is now. It's not an ideal situation.
But I think we've seen Drake may grow from last

(24:27):
year and the first six weeks of this season in
front of our eyes that win in Buffalo, who just catapulted.
In my opinion, Drake may from a confidence standpoint, into
the franchise quarterback for doing it. I've got some decent
pieces around him. I think we'll be able to defend.
Rabel always his teams are always well prepared. I love
the way he manages games. I think they take care

(24:47):
of business. It's not I'm going to tell you overall,
I thought this was a terrible weekend in the NFL
from a betting standpoint, even just maybe matchup standpoint as well.
But I wouldn't be head if you like New England
to lay the number, and I agree with you. Normally
laying six and a half on the road is going
to get you killed. But this is not a bad
spot against a very very bad teams.

Speaker 2 (25:09):
Yeah, and I don't see Tennessee scoring more than ten
to thirteen points quite honestly, so they New England could
easily cover that. I just I think there's You're right,
this is a tough card. Speaking of the aforementioned Raiders
catching eleven and a half at Kansas City, it's a
hefty lion for an NFC rivalry. Three of the last
four games been seted by a touchdown or less. But
I do feel unfortunately this game does have blowoff potential.

(25:31):
I will not be on the game where she Reich
back for Kansas City. I feel like Kansas City feels
the roads, but the Raiders always save a little lecture
for the Chiefs. Do you have any feel for this game, Sunday?

Speaker 5 (25:42):
I don't, And so you know logical today to take
the points in the NFL, you get these types of points,
like I thought that line between the Bengals and Packers
a couple of weeks ago was way too high at
fourteen or last week, excuse me. And you look at
this number of teams pretty high. But here's the problem.
You without brock Fowers in all likelihood, He's a key
card for the team offensively.

Speaker 6 (25:59):
And the other thing is Bernie.

Speaker 5 (26:00):
When you take a team, you know one thing I
like in college, when I take an underdog. I want
to take a team that I believe actually has a
chance to not only be competitive and comparative to cover
the number, but to really be in the game unless
you're getting somebody getting you know, twenty five thirty points
something like that. But when I look at this Raiders team, yes,
it's the NFL. They can be competitive, but I have

(26:21):
zero confidence in geno sense. Like he could have three
good drives, they may not score. I'm waiting for that
fourth drive to have either a sack, fumble or an interception.

Speaker 2 (26:29):
You stole my thunder their big fellow. The one thing
that would keep me off the Raiders is what you
just said, and do you don't like just to throw
it to the other team. And he's already thrown ten
interceptions already, so I look for that hit parade to continue.
The Denver Broncos are, honestly, I think the real deal.
They're laying a substantial number here. You're laying a full

(26:51):
touchdown and I've seen seven and a half as well.
And quite honestly, the Giants kind of have got my attention.
Lam all. They've averaged twenty three points a games since
Jackson start, Jackson Darts took over as the starter and
Cam scattable is you know, runaway bowling ball of butcher knives?
Can Denver hang that number? In your view?

Speaker 5 (27:14):
I like the Giants here. I think it's a few
too many points to look at that same game you
mentioned the Scataboo Humble. They had a big turnover in
that game. Game was tighter than the final score indicated
it seem. I thought they got a lot of conference
from the win against the Eagles. They had three additional days.
But Phonix is a better quarterback when the pocket's on
the move. I think he's probably the best quarterback in
the NFL. When the pocket is moving and he's running

(27:36):
around stationery in the pocket, not quite as effective. I
think if you're the Giants, you have a renewed confidence
with Jackson, Dart Bernie. I'll tell you one thing that Listen,
Russell Wilson is a good person from everything that I hear,
but from a lot of people, and from a guy
I knew that played with the New York Yankees and
then from the NFL. So because he was in training
camp or spring training one year with the Yankees, for

(27:57):
whatever reason, he just doesn't seem to click with his
other teammate. I don't want to sit there and say
he's one way or the other. Is this type of
person out? He's not a bad guy. You just some
people don't have the ability to blend you well with
other people. And I feel like there has been a
boost a shot in the arm for the Giants. With
Jackson Dark starting and playing, this team feels more confident.

(28:17):
They've kind of been re energized. I'm not laying this
number with Denver. I'll take the Giants in the points here, all.

Speaker 2 (28:24):
Right, I'm with you. I can't lie I fired on
the Giants. Also, I think I think Brian Dabele has
some enough pieces he can work with in their defensive front.
Seven is better than people realize. Wrap it up with
Amal Shaw, our NFL insider. A couple of games though,
that I think are of marquee value. I have interest

(28:45):
in this forty nine ers Atlanta Falcons game. I know
the Niners are a mass unit. I don't know who
put the bloyk. I don't know you've used Fred Warner,
but they do get George catleback. They're only laying two
and a half. Atlanta has split their two road games
this year. You never know what you're going to get
with the Falcons. You can lose started enough in Carolina,
or you can pull out a big game. Do you

(29:05):
have any few for this forty nine er Falcon game?

Speaker 7 (29:08):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (29:08):
I really like the Niners here.

Speaker 5 (29:10):
I took the Niners Niners in this game, laying two
and a half in this figure spot. First of all,
there's no way you can justify the fucking team less
than a three point road dog. And I get they
had the good win last week against Help me out here, Bernie.
Who they Buffalo? You know, they had a nice, nice
win against the Bills. But here's the thing that nobody's

(29:30):
talking about. Buffalo should be charged with perpetrating a fraud
because they are a fraud. That defense is terrible. Okay,
they can't stop anybody. I give Atlanta all the credit
in the world. They played a great game. They were,
but you know in the second half they struggled. The
didn't move the ball much. And remember this, the entire
world had written off the Niners when they went into
Los Angeles at SOFI, when they had the kid from

(29:52):
my Alabama. He's the quarterback right now, Matt Jones, Yes,
and so he comes in there, he plays well, he's effective.

Speaker 10 (30:00):
You mentioned George.

Speaker 5 (30:01):
Kittleback, you know who that helps. That helps CMC. This
team is still is dangerous. When you get CMC the
ball out of the backfield, you get a healthier George Kittle.
It helps the pass catching game. This team is dangerous. Yes,
they are a mass unit. You lose Fred Warner and
Nick Bosa. Fred Warners is good enny defensive player in
the National Football League, But to me, I still think

(30:21):
I don't want to go against the Niners. And I
don't know if there's a better coach in the NFL
when you have a maybe a condensed lineup, maybe not
as many of the assets that you want, and just
kind of sticking to his game plan, running the football,
managing the clock, doing what is necessary better than Kyle Shanahan.
Atlanta's got off to a good start, but remember they
got embarrassed in Carolina. This is not a great team.

(30:44):
They're a decent team. They're pretty good team, but let's
not act like you know, this is some great Falcons teams.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
Last game. I'm with you on all that, and then
I like Dan honors as well. Monday night, first game
of the doubleheader the Lions. This people need to know this.
By the way, the Lions are averaging forty four points
at home this season, and I know they're banged up
on their secondary. But in fifty games as a coach,
Dan Campbell has never lost twice in his last fifty games,

(31:13):
two in a row is what I'm saying. So coming
off a loss, those are a bit of a runaway line.
Four and a half. I like the Lions six and
a half. I might be a spectator, but I still
think they could actually cover that number and win by
a touchdown. Your thoughts on the Lions Tampa Bay, Well, you.

Speaker 5 (31:27):
Got Mike Evan banged up. He's going to be a
game time decision on Monday. You got to Mecca Buca
with a similar situation with the Hampshire. Both guys dealing
with that. I like Bucky Irving a lot for this
Tampa team.

Speaker 11 (31:37):
He's out, that's a little bit of a blow in.

Speaker 5 (31:40):
The past, catching game out of the backfield. You know,
White's done done an effective job this year running the ball.

Speaker 7 (31:46):
But I'm with you.

Speaker 5 (31:49):
I think the one thing that gets overlooked with Detroit
Jamo and Amen Ross Saint Brown, They've got guys that
can make place.

Speaker 9 (31:57):
They are very, very dangerous, and I think at.

Speaker 5 (32:00):
Home in that controlled environment in the Dome, this team
is danger especially coming off of a loss here. But
I like Baker Mayfield. But here's the thing that always
kind of separates Baker Mayfield from stepping into that category.
Of great players. You look at that Philly game, there's
an interception where you're sitting there watching the game, going
is this that colored lines?

Speaker 8 (32:19):
Like what's going on here? Like who you throwing the
ball to?

Speaker 12 (32:22):
And Baker.

Speaker 5 (32:23):
For every you know nine great players, there's one they're like, Yo,
wait a minute, there's no way this guy just threw the.

Speaker 7 (32:29):
Ball right there.

Speaker 5 (32:30):
And so I think that sometimes can take away from
what Stampus Kittabull are doing. But I didn't play this one,
but I'm with you. I think you have to take
a look at potentially Detroit in this game.

Speaker 2 (32:41):
Them all great stuff. As always, man, I'd love to
get you back on as we get toward get closer
to the.

Speaker 5 (32:45):
Playoffs anytime, my friend.

Speaker 2 (32:48):
Thanks that Tamal Shaw NFL and the Sadder worked alongside
Brett Musburger. Obviously he knows his stuff. Tremendous Football IQ.

the iHeart Radio app. Get those fingers ready. We are

Literally the clock will strike midnight, but figuratively and literally

(33:29):
wherever you're at, the midnight hour means you get the
last word. We got two really good topics tonight, polarizing
and in one one fun one. So we want to
hear from you. Eight seven seven nine nine six six
three six nine eight seven, seven, nine to nine on Fox.
We are nineteen minutes away from the midnight hour, and
coming up, I will set up the topics on the table.

(33:51):
As Lee Hamilton used to say, I'm Bernie Fraddworck Keimny.
Your line from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios.
Don't go away. You're listening to the Bernie Fratter Show
on Fox Sports Radio. All right back in the Bernie
Fattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Get those fingers ready. Eight
seven seven, nine nine six six three six nine eight seven,
seven nine to nine on Fox. We're twelve minutes away

(34:11):
from the midnight hour. See where I live in Vegas,
it turns twelve midnight here in twelve minutes, perhaps the
same as you, but figuratively around the world, it's the
midnight hour. You get the last word? Sorry, Topic number one?
How could it not be James Franklin. Now, I'm not
defending him, nor am I defending the Penn State decision.
See what I want to hear from you folks tonight

(34:34):
is I'm assuming many of you are going to agree
with the decision that it maybe he needed to go,
But was it the right decision? Period? Was it the
right decision to do it? Now in the middle of
the year, they're paying in fifty million to go away?
I get it. He was four and twenty one against
top ten teams. He weren't going to win a national championship.

(34:54):
Three weeks ago they lost to Oregon and then after
that poof right down the dumper. But overall record of
one oh four and forty five got to the playoffs
last year five New Year six Bowls won them six
seasons with ten or more wins. Conference Dominus twenty eight
wins over a three year period. Coach eighteen all Americans

(35:21):
right down the line. Fifty nine NFL draft picks. He
had seven top twenty finishes, five top ten finishes. I'm
not defending him, but be careful what you wish for,
because I don't know what their succession plan at Penn
State is. Maybe they do. So was it the right decision?
Number one? Was it the right decision now? Could they

(35:43):
have waited till the end of the season or do
you think it really had to be done now? And
the other thing is do you think his successor will
do what James Franklin couldn't do, and that's win the
national championship or even just get to the National Championship game? Now?
I know that that Rule is the moment's rage. He's
a very good coach currently in Nebraska. You may have

(36:05):
noticed they got thump by Minnesota Saturday. Okay, happens rules
at Penn State alone. He's close friends with the ad
Pat Kraft. They work together at Temple. But you thought
James Franklin had a big game issue. Matt Rule has
lost eighteen straight games against top twenty five opponents. He
may be your leader though, to get the job well.
By the way, he was also a linebacker at Penn

(36:27):
State thirty years ago. The other name being mentioned is Elko,
Mike Elko. All right, so let's not go down that road.
We don't know. It's all speculation. It ain't gonna be
Kurt Signetti, right, anybody you mentioned, you have to answer yourself.
Are they going to do better than James Franklin did?
And I get it. Franklin lost gains, but it appeared

(36:49):
he appeared to have lost the locker room. So topic one,
James Franklin, was it the right decision? Was it the
right decision to do it now or wait at the
end of the season? And number three will his successor
be able to deliver the thing that James Franklin was
not able to deliver? All right? If I had a

(37:10):
nickel for everybody I talked to since May that were
worried about the Dodgers, I kept telling people October, baseball
is different. This team's DNA is different. They got one
under their belt. They've got power pitching. The strike zone
shrinks in the postseason. Everything is more intense. The Dodgers
aren't just winning their dominating look at their starting pitching.

(37:31):
What they did those four games in twenty eight innings
They averaged over seven innings to start only two hits.
Check that two earned runs. Nine hits. They struck out
thirty five, a cumulatively area of zero point sixty three unreal.
Lowest batting average allowed in a best to seven postgame
series in history. They held the Brewers to a batting

(37:52):
average of one to eight. Team that was the best
offense in the National League. Fewest runs allowed in the
postseason series limited the Brewers to four total runs at
a four game series. I remember after three games are going.
This is domination. The Brewers were only five for twenty
eight with men in scoring position. It struck out twenty seven.
All right, forget all the numbers. Here's the question. I

(38:16):
think the Dodgers have a high probability to repeat. Is
it good for baseball if the Dodgers repeat? Now, no
one's repeated in twenty five years. You've had twenty five
years now, so you've had a repeat team. And let
me tell you if they repeat, tell me who's gonna
stop him in twenty twenty six. But I'm getting ahead
of myself. Are dynasties good for sports? I think they are,

(38:37):
and I'm not calling them a dynasty, But would you
like to see the Dodgers repeat? Yes or no? And
do you think it's good for baseball? Yes or no?
So Number one, James Franklin wasn't the right decision, meaning
did they was right that they fired him in light
of his accomplishments, even though he didn't give them what
they really wanted. This is craziness. Number two, seventy of

(38:57):
his games. I'm going to pay him fifty million to
go away. He has never been a winning national championship.
But well, the next guy. You know where I'm going
with that. Number two, the Dodgers, they are on the
doorstep of making history and repeating. Is it good for baseball?
If the Dodgers repeat? Do you want to see them repeat?
We'll talk about why dynasties are good or bad. I
think they're good for sports. They're polarizing. Number three. You

(39:18):
saw USC played Notre Dame Saturday. This is interesting. We
don't know when they're gonna play again. Do you believe
that this historic rivalry, and it is historic, should continue.
This is a game that's embedded in both schools history,
history that goes back a long ways. I know Colin's railing. Well,

(39:39):
we can't have the game played in a blizzard. It's
never been played in a blizzard, Colin and there are
no blizzards in LA. And there's never been a blizzard
in in South Bend. When they play the game in October,
whatever doesn't happen. So do you want to see the
Notre Dame USC rivalry continue? There's none schedule at this
point Dodgers if they repeat? Is it good for baseball? Yes?

(40:00):
Or no? And let's get heavily into the James Franklinton
because this is crazy time. We're living in crazy eight
seven seven nine nine six six three sixty nine eight
seven seven ninety nine on Fox. It is the midnight hour.
We want to hear from you on these three topics,
or you can even rant keep it locked. You listen
to Bernie Fratterle Show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (40:22):
You don't listening to Fox Sports Radio radio.

Speaker 2 (40:26):
Stretcher heard the man Bernie Fradle Show keeps rolling right along.
My name is Bernie Fratlewick Kenedy lyon from the Fox
Sports Radio studios here in Las Vegas, and the call
banks are lighting up, so I don't want to waste
any time. Let's jump right to it. It is in
fact the midnight hour? All right, James Franklin. Objectively it

(40:46):
was the right decision, but subjectively was it? And how
does the next successor do? Uh? The Dodgers on the
virgin of repeating they're dominating? Is it good for baseball?
Haven't had a repeat in twenty five years in Notre Dame, USC.
According to Colin Carr, we can't continue this, can't play
the game in the blizzard. It's never been played in

(41:06):
the blizzard, but I think I think it needs to continue.
Let's get your thoughts. We waste no time. Let's get
off to the phone lines. As usual, we are joined
by our Ricky Henderson leadoff man. Do you ever reliable?
Jim from Massachusetts?

Speaker 6 (41:18):
Welcome Jim, Hey, Bernie. I wouldn't have given the guy
fifty million on a buyout. I would have just let
him go and do the season out. But we live
in an age of instant gratifications, so you know, with
the Internet and everything, so people don't have time to
let things you know grow, you know, bloom and stuff.
So I wouldn't given him the fifty I would have

(41:40):
just let him do out the year and then you know,
deal with stuff after that. Instead of letting it be
talk for fodder now the rest of the year. I mean,
what does that do to the locker room?

Speaker 10 (41:49):
You know?

Speaker 6 (41:50):
So as far as the Dodgers go, I don't think
they're going to repeat. I mean I think I just
don't think they're going to do it. I think everybody's
against him. I mean, I like him, They're a good
team and stuff like that. Baseball is okay, but I
just don't think I think the I think the odds
are against them, but who knows, you know. And the

(42:10):
third one, keep the rivalry, keep them playing, you know,
I mean, even what's the point? You know, it's a
good game, everybody likes to see it and stuff like that,
and I just want to go off the grid. For
one thing for sure is LSU get rid of Kelly.
I'm an LSU fan. My dad, I got all relatives

(42:31):
down Louisiana, down the South and stuff. I followed him
ever since I was the kid. He has no control
of those players. I mean, I'd like to know the
stat on fifteen penalties for acting like idiots. He has
no control of what's going on out there with those kids,
So bounce him and get somebody in there. That's a disciplinarian,
and then I think they can go places. Thanks Brent.

Speaker 2 (42:51):
Good stuff is always Jim, and I think the trainers
on the tracks. I don't know how much longer Brian
Kelly will be there. He will certainly finish out this year,
will most likely be back there next year. But you
heard my opening commentary, Les Miles at Orgeron, Nick saban
Or they av in common. They won in their fourth
year a national championship at LSU. Oh yeah, Brian Kelly's

(43:12):
in his fourth year. We take you back out to Vegas. Kyle,
Good evening, Kyle, how you been. What's up?

Speaker 8 (43:18):
Bernie.

Speaker 12 (43:18):
I don't know if you can hear me too well
man driving right now.

Speaker 2 (43:21):
But I can hear you know.

Speaker 12 (43:22):
Everything's good, everything's great. Been working my butt off. But
let's jump right into it. First off, James Franklin, Man, Hey, listen,
the Big ten is the new SEC. If you're not winning,
sorry brother, you went from you had a winning record
a season ago, you were top right, you can't come

(43:44):
back the next season. Follow up with losses, big losses.
And don't get me wrong, I think the Oregon loss
really exposed them and his ways of how he's been
actually coaching. Moving on to the Dodgers. Do I want
to see the Dodgers repeat. No, because I'm tired of
la fans. But is it good for baseball? I think
it is, Honestly, I do. Nobody wanted to see the

(44:06):
Bulls repeat in the nineties. Everybody routed against them, and
they just gave them more confidence to go out there
and do it again and again and again. Because if
you're not first, your last, and if you're you know,
if you're not winning, then of course you're going to hate.
So let them win if it does. And by the way,
show hal Tani's gonna have every Dodgers record by the

(44:28):
time the kid is done. Taking the deferred money I
think is a great option. Uh, You're able to create
more roster spots, You're able to get more batters out there,
You're able to get more you know, more for it.
You can get more bang for your buck at that point.
And don't get me wrong, Dodgers have a great fan base.
They put butts in seats, So I mean, if the
money is flowing in and you got guys that are

(44:48):
willing to take the lesser to make the team greater
than hey, why not. Why not if you don't want
to see him repeat, stop them. And lastly, I'm agree
with the other caller. We need the rivalries to continue
to I mean, think about it. If we lost the
Paul Bunny In rivalry, or if we lost the Red
River shootout rivalry, If we lose any of these good

(45:11):
rivalries from these schools that have been going on for
sixty seventy eighty and even some of them one hundred
plus years of these two teams getting back and forth,
then college football is going to lose its flavor. And
one key thing. This is the greatest college football season
since early two thousands, mid two thousands. We have so

(45:34):
many different upsets and so many different teams on the
weekend and week out basis that can beat you or
beat the schools that don't need to lose those games.
Love the show, Bernie always bless you and your family
and you guys, be good out there.

Speaker 2 (45:49):
Matt, Thanks can back at you. Listen. I want the
Notre Dame USC game to continue. This is a rivalry
that's embedded in the DNA fiver of these two institutions.
I've been to games at the Coliseum, but been to
multiple at at at I'm talking about USC Notre Dame

(46:09):
games at the Coliseum and in South Bend. It's special
and it almost always has some sort of postseason implication.
Solomon in Los Angeles joins us. Welcome in Solomon, thanks
for having on our patience.

Speaker 7 (46:20):
Thank you, Hey, Bernie, thanks for protecting my call.

Speaker 10 (46:23):
Man.

Speaker 13 (46:23):
It's been a little while, and I appreciate speaking with you.

Speaker 2 (46:26):
Yes, sir, sub looks.

Speaker 13 (46:28):
Number one, mister Franklin. If you think about it, Rosic Clinton,
they pay a man fifty million bucks not to work.
My god, it's kind of an absurdity to that, isn't there.

Speaker 2 (46:41):
But well, you know the way they negotiate these things
these days, it's always to protect the employee. And you
know the irony is Clinton Penn State said they're glad
to pay it. But you're right, we're living in interesting times.
Like I said, go ahead, Solomon.

Speaker 7 (46:54):
Yeah, it's okay.

Speaker 13 (46:55):
Though sports is just nuts. Sometimes sports just gets nuts,
you know. But the litmus test, because I'm a UCLA fan,
it works for u c l A.

Speaker 8 (47:07):
My god, they.

Speaker 13 (47:07):
Turned it around with the coaching change, so maybe that's
the way you got to go. Let's see what happens.
Regarding the Dodgers, I'm a Dodger fan. Of course I
want to see them repeat they quote unquote bad for baseball.
Excuse me, You've got to get over that. They do
it right. Why don't you just follow their battle plane

(47:28):
if you can. I understand you might have limited funds,
so do it to the level that you can. Why
do you want to penalize success? And as far as
money is concerned, I can guarantee you MLB wants to
see the Dodgers or the Yankees, or the Cubs or
the Cardinals. They want to see the big teams in
the World Series because that's what people watch. Most of

(47:51):
that album is, Yeah, they're not going to watch you
know Milwaukee, Toronto, you know Milwaukee, Seattle, Well maybe Seattle
a little bit, bigger market. It ain't happening. It's not
going to match the Dodgers. Okay, So it's still good
for bigseball to have big time winners and big time teams.
As far as that see is concerned. As a UCLA fan,

(48:13):
I couldn't care less one way or the other.

Speaker 2 (48:16):
But you're gonna get your crack at the at the
Trojans here coming up, pretty mull litten.

Speaker 13 (48:21):
But as a sports fan, yeah, I want to see
those lives at least continue, and they should because it
definitely helps the sport, makes it interesting. I mean, you
don't want to homogen sport and get rid of these
kind of things.

Speaker 2 (48:36):
Good stuff, Am, and don't be a stranger, buddy. Thanks
for checking in. I want to say one quick thing
before I get to Mark in Maryland, Mark your up
neicks hang for just a few seconds. Here the shrewdness
with which the Dodgers have been managed and overseen this
year from the top down. Nobody has mentioned this. How
ironic did all three of their big free agents Michael Conford, Confordo, Tanner,

(48:59):
Scott and kurb none of them made the NLCS roster.
They were all left off. They're paying these guys that
combining forty six million dollars. Right, Some organizations were saying
fire the GM get an owner. How could you do that?
Not the Dodgers. They're nine to one in the postseason.
Put that in your pep and smoke it for a second.

(49:19):
Mark and Maryland Mark, thanks for your patience. You're up next.

Speaker 8 (49:21):
How are you, Bronie? How are you? It's always a
pleasure man, you're doing it right, and everybody in sports
talk radio needs to listen to you because it's falling off. Okay,
Now my take on James Franklin. It's very interesting. I've
always liked James Franklin because Franklin was the coach in
waiting at Maryland, and I never understood it. I think

(49:44):
it was under freegip, yes, and I wanted to see it.
And when he was stepped away, I thought it was
a big mistake Maryland made and they never quite recovered
until this year, until this latest administration. I liked the
new coach. Okay, so he went to State. Now, Penn
State always cherry picks the DMV area the best, and.

Speaker 9 (50:05):
He did it because he had local ties.

Speaker 8 (50:07):
He took them out best people, four or five star guys.
I like James Franklin, Okay. I think he's a victim
of the Joe paternal era. And as far as as
far as winning, I think that Penn State has unrealistic expectations.
He did the job, he didn't win the big game.

Speaker 2 (50:29):
You're not wrong. Stay right there, because I want to
back you up on this. I don't if you're in
my opening commentary, and people need to be careful what
they wish for. I'm sure you remember, Mark, he took
over in twenty fourteen, just a couple of years removed
from the Jerry Sandusky debacle. They could recruited anybody and
look what they've done since. So that has to be

(50:49):
part of the narrative. And he turned around Vanderbilt before
he turned around Penn State. Continue on, I.

Speaker 8 (50:54):
Forgot that exactly exactly. It's not going to take long.
Somebody's going to score him up because he's a diamond.
He knows how to coach. I think he's just a
victim of the stirker circumstances. I'm a big James Franklin fan.
They pulled the guy. I don't know why you would
do this in mid season.

Speaker 2 (51:12):
Well that's questionable. That's a weird one too, And you
have to ask yourself, Mark, do you think his successor?
And I don't want to hear about Matt Rule. I
like Matt Rool great. He played linebacker in Penn State.
He's lost to eighteen straight ranked teams.

Speaker 8 (51:26):
Continue on, Matt Rul is not going to do any
better than James Franklin. You're right, No, I don't see
anybody coming in there and make it a huge difference.
I think Penn State made a mistake. I think he
deserved another year. I know what the whole thing about
not winning the big Game, I don't think that it

(51:47):
was I think that was the narrative. I think it
was an unfair narrative. He has it proved out. But
James Franklin has done the job. Okay, and I think
Ben State's gonna regret it, I really really do.

Speaker 2 (52:01):
Now.

Speaker 8 (52:01):
Now getting back to the Dodgers. I love dynasties. That's
what sports is about. Nobody remembers that parody is the
worst thing in sports. Parody means mediocrity. All they did
was because the owners wanted everybody to pay more money
at the end of the season to say I've got
such and such percentage of getting into playoffs. Okay, nobody

(52:24):
remembers all that. No, I love the Dodgers. I love dynasties.
I grew up with dynasties. People remember dynasties. Okay, I
just want to segue real quick. Yeah us, thank you,
thank you, Bernie usc notes your name. I grew up

(52:45):
on that. That's crazy. You need to keep the classics
the classics. Okay, this is big time football. You should never, never,
never even think about not scheduling that game. Okay, you're
going to destroy the fiber of college football. This is
a classic game. So no, I'm against that entirely. I

(53:07):
think people tend to overthink things and they make it work.
Keep it. If it's work, you keep it the same. Okay,
this thing every year. Every year people look at Notre
Dame in USC and if they have a good team,
good records and things like that, it's going to be
a sellout.

Speaker 2 (53:24):
Good stuff. Mark appreciate it. And the thing about dynasties,
ever so quickly, they very much create compelling narratives, the
drive fan interest, tremendous economic success, and they create a
long term legacy. The opposite of love is not hate,
its indifference. There are people who hate the Dodgers and
hate the Yankees, but they'll watch right Spox, Sweet, I

(53:48):
was hope you call the night.

Speaker 10 (53:49):
What do you got for us, Bud Well, It's hard
to turn down an invitation, Bernie, it's great to be
back with you. I know you're doing well because you
had your Pepperoni lunchibles today.

Speaker 2 (53:58):
That's right, I watched it down with you. You who go ahead,
Oh fabulous.

Speaker 10 (54:05):
Well, the first thing I want to say is I
want to give a shout out to my work in
State Beavers. They finally won a game. They're not zero
and eighth, they're one and seven, So that's nice. James Franklin,
I gosh, could the team have quit on him? I mean,
he well, they won their.

Speaker 2 (54:26):
There's talk that he did lose the locker room. There
is talk, but this is pretty dramatic. You're paying a
guy fifty million to go away three weeks ago he
had Oregon. We listen, they might not have ever won
a national championship with him. Maybe, but be careful what
you wish for. Here. Here's the question, here's the real question.
Do you think Penn State will do better without James Franklin?
Just yes or no?

Speaker 10 (54:47):
No? No. The the interim coach is like.

Speaker 2 (54:50):
He better than the other guy I'm talking about. He
won't get the job, but next year, you know it's
they're talking Matt rule Mike Elko.

Speaker 10 (54:55):
I don't know, Well, maybe maybe they should. They should
try it, or honor Scott Frost. I mean, if they're
willing to blow fifty million bucks and then do another
big coach, you know, for more than that, Trump needs
to look at their federal funding and finding out what
what problems they've gotten while they're spending so much money.

Speaker 2 (55:15):
Let's jump to you, Let's jump to the Dodgers. If
they win, is it good for baseball? No one's repeated
since twenty five years.

Speaker 10 (55:22):
Well, I hate, I hate to agree because that's not
my thing, but yeah, it probably is. However, here in
the Northwest, we're hoping that the MS take them down.
They're one away from getting there to be interesting.

Speaker 2 (55:34):
Yeah, we had a big game Sunday night, MS, and
that's right, that's where you're at hey real quickly because
I want to get to everybody. Spok a USC Notre.

Speaker 10 (55:41):
Dame all right, USC, Notre Dame.

Speaker 2 (55:44):
Colin out of continue?

Speaker 10 (55:45):
Why? Yeah, Colin has gotten some ayahuasca from Aaron Rodgers probably.

Speaker 2 (55:51):
What is this? Why you can't play the game in
a Blizzard. It's never even played a Blizzard.

Speaker 10 (55:56):
Well, you know, you know what we need to do.
We need to we need to have it held in
Jerry's world with a giant snow machine and make it
a blizzard. That would be terrific.

Speaker 2 (56:05):
Okay, I'm down, I'm down, fock good listen I don't
mean to be sure, but good to hear from me.
I want to get to everybody. We got to get
to Allen, Saint Louis, Dave and Phoenix, Andrew and Bakersfield,
John Northern California. I'm getting all of you. Thanks for
so much for taking the time calling to be part
of the show. We will get to all of you.
I'm I'm Glad spock Vinson d ordering because less we forget.

(56:27):
After winning a championship at LSU, they paid him eighteen
million dollars to go away, and when they called him in,
it's hell. They were going to fire, but he was
getting eighteen million. He goes, all right, tell me when
you want to leave, and tell me where you want
me to be. He could waiting at the eighteen million anyway.
I digress. I'm Bernie Frattle. We're coming to you line
from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio staters. Keep it

Speaker 2 (57:05):
We're back in the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
The midnight hour continues. We go out to Saint Louis,
were joined by Alan Allen. Thanks for hanging on.

Speaker 7 (57:13):
Buddy tonight talk in a while.

Speaker 2 (57:16):
How are you welcome back in doing well? Thanks?

Speaker 7 (57:18):
Thanks coming back and I'm gonna take it from the
back and we're working my way back. UFC Notre Dame.
I think they should still play, and let's face it,
the question is who are they gonna be replace on
the schedules with with with each team? Are they going
to get another top ten school or are they going
to play at San Jose State and nothing like that.

(57:39):
Let's say, you know, with with the way the college
playoffs are now and the way they're picking teams, they're
going your oh, your excuby, your Doncarper schedule is going
to have more more of an impact. And I think
that if you replace it with some blood donor, that

(57:59):
may hurt you the past, whether they if you lose
USC or today if they lose each other, it may
not hurt them as bad. Now far, the Dodgers are
the third. I love the Dodgers are doing. I love
dynasties let's face it, how many people you think were
happy Kansas City Chiefs didn't win the Super Bowl last year?

Speaker 2 (58:20):
A lot? Probably, Yeah, because I wasn't one of them.
I don't. I don't. I don't roll that way, but
I get your point.

Speaker 7 (58:27):
Yeah, they don't. They always and somebody always has to
see the big the big guy get knocked off.

Speaker 2 (58:33):
If they win. If they win this season, I remember,
it'll be their third World Series victory in five years. Yeah,
that's something. And and it'd be the first time anybody's
repeated in twenty five years.

Speaker 7 (58:45):
Especially in baseball. You know, that's a that's a dynasty.
And let's face it, their picture staff is young.

Speaker 2 (58:54):
That four son, James Franklin, let's get yourself.

Speaker 7 (58:56):
Okay, Matt, I'm going to ask you one more question
about the Dodgers scenario. Could you imagine the game is
closer to the ninetheen and them bringing no time the
end of the closer? Would you like to see that?

Speaker 14 (59:09):
No?

Speaker 2 (59:12):
Yeah, as a hitter or no. I would not like
to see it as a doctor fan. No, Tony can
do anything. You can sell popcorn between an these off
you wants.

Speaker 7 (59:19):
Yeah, Okay, As far as James franklincerned, I think James
Franklin job was lost before the season even started. First
of all, the preseason polls had a rank too high,
and of course people who pay attention to that, the
expectations were high. What did we hear for the talking
heads on your Your network was a big network everybody.

(59:43):
They had a top five corn top five, top ten quarterback.
They had the best running back tandem in the in
the country. When that didn't happen, all of a sudden,
people expected to this, but they didn't get that. Then
they lost the You know, the loss of Oregon didn't
hurt them when they lost to the other two teams.

(01:00:04):
I think I think that was there. That was their dollars.

Speaker 2 (01:00:07):
That's right, that's right, that because now they can't go
to the playoffs. The Oregon loss, they could have they
could have bounced back from right, and.

Speaker 7 (01:00:14):
Everybody's talking about their fifty million dollars. You know, that's
do those the university the doesn't pay that salary. It's
the big boosters. So people go, oh, Fenn State from
Penn State do this. Penn State is not paying their salaries.

Speaker 2 (01:00:28):
Well, you you bring up a really good point there,
Alan I've got some pretty good moss to tell me.
And that's not one hundred percent confirmed and not one
hundred percent source. But the adities might be picking up
a lot of that because they're going to be a
Penn State sponsored next year. Solf.

Speaker 7 (01:00:40):
Yeah. Well, who's who's the biggest sponsor at Oregon Nike? Yeah,
So so every every school has big every school has
these big sponsors. And it's face it, Fenn State probably
has a whole bunch of billionaire and billionaires that were
probably upset and was glad to help rate this check.
And if anybody thinks about I'll go after this about

(01:01:02):
the money, I don't care how much money they get
when they get fired. You can Jimbo Fisher Franklin if
they could coach one more game and give that money back,
they would. No coach wants to get fired from a job.
It's really humiliating because there are only a few Division
I coaches take care of. Bernie is great, talk to

(01:01:24):
you as always.

Speaker 2 (01:01:25):
Thanks, You're not wrong about that's a that's a that's
a blow to people. John in Northern California, I know
you had to go. Feel free to call back in
we go to Dave and Phoenix. Hi, Dave, how are you.

Speaker 10 (01:01:38):
Hello?

Speaker 15 (01:01:38):
Bernie. I'm glad to talk to you and I can
cover all three topics for you here as far as
James Franklin, as far as James Franklin goes.

Speaker 7 (01:01:47):
A lot of people are saying, well, they.

Speaker 15 (01:01:48):
Had everybody coming back this year. Have these people not
heard of Tyler Warren and.

Speaker 10 (01:01:53):
Have Bill Carter?

Speaker 16 (01:01:54):
Those are two pretty good players.

Speaker 2 (01:01:58):
Yeah, well, I think the implication it's just like two
years ago when Michigan had a bunch of guys coming back, Dave,
and last year Ohio State had a bunch of Yep,
you're not wrong, but they had a three year starter quarterback,
five draft choices that are projected, and the vast majority
of their starters. So, but you're not wrong. Those are
huge losses. But even with those guys, they didn't win
a damn thing. Continue on, Dave, I digress.

Speaker 15 (01:02:20):
Okay, My point is last year they were so close
to beating Notre Dame and being in the National Title Game.
This year, obviously, they were so close to beating Oregon.
They led by seven in overtime and then mysteriously they
managed to lose to U. Sala and Northwestern. But you

(01:02:40):
know what, don't look now, somehow USLA in Northwestern they're
both three and one in the Big Ten. I'm sure
that won't last. But Penn State did lose all three
of those games back combined twelve points, and just maybe
if Drew Aller didn't get injured at the end of
that Northwestern game, they might have been able to make
that fourth down conversion and go down and kick the

(01:03:01):
field goals.

Speaker 7 (01:03:02):
So I don't know. I think they should at least
let the.

Speaker 6 (01:03:05):
Season play out.

Speaker 14 (01:03:06):
It was.

Speaker 2 (01:03:06):
It's just a no lot. Maybe more of the story
will come out, Dave. But to let a guy who's
done the things he's done when seventy percent of his games,
et cetera, et cetera, go on ceremonies in the middle
of the season like that, and I gotta ask you
real quickly, did you know? Just short answer, do you
think his successor is going to do better than James
Franklin did?

Speaker 7 (01:03:27):
Doubtful?

Speaker 15 (01:03:27):
I don't think so fair It's gonna be hard. Now,
as far as the Dodgers, I must admit I'd like
to see either Seattle or Toronto win the World Series.
I think I'm going to go down and make a
little bet on Blake Snell to be the MVP. As
long as it's not a four game sweep, he should
be pitching in game one in game.

Speaker 8 (01:03:48):
Five, So I kind of like that idea.

Speaker 15 (01:03:51):
And then as far as Notre Dame USC, it's a
great series. I think you and I can both remember
not only did the Bush push, but the Anthony Davis
six touchdowns a.

Speaker 2 (01:04:02):
Next stay Agent, I'm so glad you brought that up,
because we are proud to be chronologically accomplished. And I
know my buddy Steve Hartman will remember this the next
day in the LA Times and said Davis Davis, Davis, Davis,
Davis Davis six times across the top. They were trailing
big time at halftime. And if I'm not mistaken, didn't
Davis Anthony Davis Dave score all six touchdowns in the

(01:04:25):
second half?

Speaker 15 (01:04:26):
Well, yeah, I think Notre Dame was up twenty four
to nothing, and then just before the half USA scored,
so it was twenty four to six at the half,
and then it ended up fifty five to twenty four.

Speaker 8 (01:04:39):
So right, I do somehow, I do.

Speaker 15 (01:04:41):
Remember that I remember that game from nineteen seventy four,
but sometimes I forget what happened ten minutes ago.

Speaker 2 (01:04:48):
What are your thoughts? And then get to that, Okay,
we've already fair enough, go ahead.

Speaker 15 (01:04:53):
Yeah, I was just going to say the problem is
that so many teams in college football just love to
schedule cupcakes, which to me is very unfulfilling as a fan.
I don't like watching those games. So I don't know
what we can do about it, but it's really a problem.
And then the last time you had to call her
just a minute ago, that asked whether sho hey Otani

(01:05:13):
might actually come in and close out a game in
the World Series. Well, what about this scenario? If he
again starts only game four, Well, he'll be ready.

Speaker 6 (01:05:23):
If there's a game.

Speaker 15 (01:05:24):
Seven, Could he come in and close it out like
he did in the World Baseball Classic striking out Mike Trout.

Speaker 2 (01:05:30):
Oh, wouldn't that be something. I don't see that in
the cards. I think they're going to keep him as
a starter. Great stuff, Dave, and I'd ever like to
correct people so hard. USC actually won that game forty
five twenty three. What's interesting about the Anthony Davis six touchdowns.
Two were on kickoff returns ninety seven yards and ninety
six yards and air. Parsigeny, head coach of Notre Dame

(01:05:53):
at the time, said we thought we could handle him.
We weren't sure if we were going to kick to him,
but forget it. He's the greatest I've ever seen in
kickoff returns. He also scored on four rushing touchdowns. Andrew
and Bakersfield, thanks for your patience here on next.

Speaker 17 (01:06:07):
What's up Bernie? So, I don't know what to tell you.
I was sick of the dog, slept all night, all day,
woke up at ten forty six pm. I'm like, all right,
let's go see if Bernie's on. I'll try and see
if I can call in. So I only got that
USC Notre Dame. I think should definitely continue. UCLA USC

(01:06:31):
is an awesome rivalry and I love it.

Speaker 2 (01:06:34):
Dodg Well, they're at the same conference, so that that's
going to continue, I don't see. And that's there's something
I don't know, Andrew. But what are the issues that's
that's facing the continuation of SE Notre Dame. I mean,
Nick Saban has said your focus should be getting onto
the playoffs and if you had one more gauntlet to
your schedule, because SC has already got a tough but
I think listen, you know, if you can beat Notre Dame,

(01:06:57):
then that helps you get into the playoff. But could
continue on you.

Speaker 17 (01:07:00):
Know, Dodgers Giants, great rivalry, yep, and you know it's
it's fun it it creates intensity. But and then Dodgers.
I guess I'll throw in a Taylor swift lyric. Okay,
people throw rocks at things that shine, So let's go Dodgers,

(01:07:21):
let's go.

Speaker 2 (01:07:22):
And anything on James Franklin today tonight, Andrew, did we
lose Andrew? Okay, thanks for checking in. I appreciate Okay,
thank you. So look eight seven seven nine nine six
six three six nine is still time to get in
on these topics. I think we've covered some good ground
and I like the objective sort of thought process. On

(01:07:44):
James Franklin. We got a tweet from Big Bad try
that again, Bernie big Rig rob Bernie number one. Franklin
should have been let go at the end of the year. See,
I think there's some merit to that. It's there's something
about cutting a guy and loose And I'm not really
defending Franklin per se. Something went awryther But when you
win seventy percent of your games, Big ten championships, made

(01:08:08):
the playoffs last year, repeated you know, repeated success in
New Year's six Bowls. He coached eighteen All Americans, fifty
nine draft picks, seven Top ten finishes, seven Top twenty finishes,
five top ten finishes. I get it. He's four and
twenty one against against you know, ranked teams, doing twenty
against top five teams. So you're not gonna get Kurt Signetti.

(01:08:31):
He'd had been crazy to go there, but Indiana took
care of that this week, so you don't have to
worry about that. You mentioned Matt Rule. Well, I like
Matt Rule and he's at Penn State alum. But has
he beat ranked teams at Nebraska? Is he doing in
Nebraska what Kurt Signetti did at Indiana?

Speaker 14 (01:08:47):
No?

Speaker 2 (01:08:48):
I did. Matt Rule played linebacker at Penn State. Great, Okay,
you got rid of a guy and James Franklin that
had quote I say this in quotes air quotes, big
game issues. Okay, he did well. Matt Rule has lost
eighteen straight games against top twenty five opponents. All right,
you wont Mike Elko Elko acc Coach of the Year

(01:09:08):
in his first season as Duke's head coach. He's done
a pretty good job at Texas A and M. The
Aggies are undefeated this year. But does he pick up
where James Franklin left off? Can you know you have
no assurance to that? Darryl Griffith said, hell, yes, he
deserved to go. He's talking about James Franklin. How many

(01:09:32):
more big games would you like? Small game James to
lose a dozen years worth? Isn't that enough for Penn State?
If you ever wanted to make money, wait for a
big game. Bet Penn States to pull him in a
big game and you hit big. James stinks And I
can't argue with Darryl's premise because it's very simple. The
bottom line is they paid him, they wanted to win

(01:09:55):
a national championship. We'll get to more some of these
tweets in a minute. Martin in Orange, California joint just
welcome and.

Speaker 7 (01:10:02):
Martin, Hey, Bernie, how get do it? Tonight?

Speaker 8 (01:10:05):
Man?

Speaker 2 (01:10:06):
Good? Thank you?

Speaker 11 (01:10:09):
Run down the topics for me one more time.

Speaker 2 (01:10:11):
Please let me start with James Franklin. Was it the
right decision to fire him? Was it the right decision
to fire him? Five games end of the season and
will his successor improve over what James Franklin did. Then
you got see Notre Dame. Are they going to continue
that rivalry? And the Dodgers if they win the World Series,
you're talking potential dynasty three and five years? Is that

(01:10:31):
good for baseball?

Speaker 11 (01:10:34):
On with Franklin? In my opinion, I wouldn't have fired him,
but I wouldn't have fired him for this reason. I
don't want the intern to succeed and then I'm stuck
hiring that guy because of the turnaround he had for
the season.

Speaker 7 (01:10:49):
I would have kept my.

Speaker 11 (01:10:50):
Coach for the end of the season, fired him at
the end of the season, hired who I wanted. But
Penn State is a little bit ungrateful because I don't
know if they remember where they were before.

Speaker 2 (01:11:00):
I talked about that at the top of the show.
It's an excellent point. He took over right after the
Jerry Sandusky debacle, when Penn State was completely in the doldrums,
and he turned them around.

Speaker 11 (01:11:11):
I exactly agree with you, Bernie, So, I mean, they
should really think about where they were before they hired
this man. I'm in la so the Dodgers being a dynasty,
I don't know, Bertie. I mean, I'm kind of torn
because I love walking the excellence and walking how that

(01:11:33):
organization is run. But then again, they just started winning, like,
you know, in the last five years. I mean, because
they've been dominant for about eleven years, so they just
started going to these World Series the least five years
and people are getting upset. And I get it, the
evil Empire, like the Yankees, like the Lakers, like the Celtics.

(01:11:54):
When you start winning, people hate you for some reason,
like the Chiefs.

Speaker 18 (01:11:58):
You know.

Speaker 11 (01:11:59):
But me personally, I'm not a Dodger fan. I'm an
Angel fan. But I enjoyed the excellence they run. Maybe
it's because I followed an organization that is completely shocked.
Last name SC.

Speaker 2 (01:12:20):
Currently there's not one schedule they got to continue it.

Speaker 11 (01:12:23):
Yeah, I have I have a I have a few
buddies that are SC fans, and they're always telling me
how great this Notre Dame se rivalry is and it's
the national attention, and.

Speaker 9 (01:12:35):
This is I'm like, you know what, guys, I gotta
get it.

Speaker 11 (01:12:38):
I understand it. I understand the history that goes with
the game. But unless you're a Notre Dame or a
USC fan. I don't think it has.

Speaker 7 (01:12:47):
The same type of fool as.

Speaker 11 (01:12:49):
Maybe something like an Army on Navy game where the
whole country gets behind. That's just my penman, Ernie. Once again,
I'm not a big Children fan. I'm a Bruins fan.
Go in, Chla, have a good night, Bernie.

Speaker 2 (01:13:03):
Thanks for checking in, Martin. And yeah, I'm really happy
for Jerry newheisls written new class acts and you know
they had athletes at UCLA. It was just a matter
of getting after it. And boy, three weeks in a
row coming up, we wrap up the bed Night Hour
eight seven seven nine nine six six three six nine.
I will tell you why I think dynasties are good

(01:13:24):
for sports. And if the Dodgers do win this year,
that's three and five years, okay, And we haven't had
a repeat champion in twenty five years, so just think
about that for a minute. By the way, with the

back on the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. Wrap
it up at the minnight hour, and we are pleased

(01:14:24):
Wake the kids, Alert the neighbors. Grandpa put on pants
as we welcome in the Legend Manuel in Guardina, Manuel,
take it away.

Speaker 16 (01:14:33):
I just want to celebrate.

Speaker 7 (01:14:38):
Back.

Speaker 9 (01:14:39):
Hey, Bernie, you know I love you, baby, and I
love these topices. Check it all these sy baby fans
of the other teams that are not the Dodgers losing
their ash about salary caps and g food money.

Speaker 11 (01:15:00):
I sat check, Bernie.

Speaker 8 (01:15:00):
We all played this by the same moves, right all teams.

Speaker 2 (01:15:04):
You know I've talked about this earlier in the year
that there are multiple Dodger players who took less to
stay with the organization and anyway, continue on it. You
got the floor.

Speaker 18 (01:15:15):
No, no, you're right and see and now what's the
key like with Tom Brady with even are you the man?

Speaker 7 (01:15:23):
That's what?

Speaker 17 (01:15:24):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:15:25):
Okay, we lost you for a minute. Could you continue on?

Speaker 18 (01:15:27):
But yeah, I was just that was the same basically, man,
that's the way to do it. You know, winners take
less sometimes if they want to win. Don't be mad
at the player, be mad at the game, be mad
at your owners. The rest of you fans, stop bitching,
getch your own because that's what we did. We've been
through long, hard years.

Speaker 8 (01:15:49):
You know, twenty long hard years. Finally the last ten
years have been really paying off and we're here for it.
As far as the other things you were saying, James Franklin, Oh,
James Franklin.

Speaker 2 (01:16:02):
Go ahead, going the other one. Those are the two topics, Well.

Speaker 18 (01:16:04):
I was gonna say, you know, notre game, man, This
guy uh is showing like a little bit of cowardice. Man, Riley,
I mean, what are you talking about? I mean, you're
shouldn't be scared to note the game. You shouldn't be
bitching about nothing.

Speaker 8 (01:16:20):
Put that program back where it needs to do. Your
damn job. Last week James Franklin's and that was a
good comp You know, Ohio State would always get double
digit wins but never could get that big one. Seems
like the same thing with James Franklin. Only time will
tell if if the next guy is better. But if

(01:16:42):
I was Penn State, I would definitely be going with
Matt Rule. That's all I got for you, Bernie.

Speaker 2 (01:16:49):
Love appreciate, appreciate the energy as as always, and I
want to talk about dynasties. And look, people can debate
whether or not if the Dodgers win it this year,
is it a dynasty. Well, if you win three in
five years, when we haven't anybody repeat in twenty five
years and they would repeat, you can have that conversation.

(01:17:10):
But I also think the Dodgers would be favorites to
come back next year and do it again. And Manuel
brought up a good point about you know, they didn't
just spend their way into a championship. I've talked about
this in past shows, where we have records that show
that spending money doesn't give you a World series always

(01:17:33):
usually it doesn't. But the top five spending teams usually
give you a good regular season, which leads to more
tenants and more revenues. But it's not just about money
with the Dodgers. Otherwise, I want to they did something
very shrewd. No one's even talking about. Right before the
National Legue Championship Series. There are three top free agents
that they signed last year, Michael Conford, O Tanner Scott

(01:17:56):
and Kirby Eates. They left him off the NLCS roster.
And these are guys that people were upset about when
the season started. Cost too much money, YadA YadA ya.
Couldford have made seventeen million this year, Scott made sixteen million,
Yates thirteen millions. So they make a total of forty
six million. That doesn't include the costs of the luxury tax,
which would have been lower. Without those three players. The

(01:18:18):
Dodgers said, well, we're not bringing you along. Yeah, we
may have spent the money on you, but you're not
going to make the NLCS roster. That's shrewd. No one's
talking about that now. Dynasties that are good. They again,
it creates a compelling narrative. You're someone bring up the
chiefs Earlier we've heard people bring up the Golden State

(01:18:39):
Warriors or Yankees whatever. It drives fan interest on both sides.
Because some people hate the Dodgers, some people love the Dodgers.
But the opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.
You have to have that same emotion invested to hate
something as you do to love it, whether it's a
ball club or whatever. This creates a long term legacy,

(01:19:00):
It inspires future generations. It does things sustain success like this.
And I can't say I'm a Dodger fan, per se.
I respect excellence. I respect what the chiefs have done.
And the truth of the matter is it's created in
a tremendous economic impact in Los Angeles, but in any
walk of life when you define excellence like Nick Saban

(01:19:24):
did at Alabama and people got tired of him. I'd
never did. But they represent sort of this rare and
really compelling combination of talent, strategy, determination, consistency that people
admire and they want some for themselves and are just
not sure how to get it. By the way, dynasties
are highly marketable. Remember the nineties Bulls, the New England Patriots.

(01:19:47):
You may not like them, but dynasties are actually good
for Sports. So the Dodgers, you can't crown them yet
at all. And we don't know who their opponent would
be yet. Big game Sunday night between the Mariners and
the Jayson coming up. Guess what starts Tuesday?

Speaker 10 (01:20:02):
The NBA.

Speaker 2 (01:20:02):
It's time for our NBA guru, Mark Medina, He joins us. Next,
keep it locked. You're listening to the Bernie Frattle Show
on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (01:20:11):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.

Speaker 2 (01:20:14):
That's right, you heard the man. Bernie Frattle Show keeps
rolling right along. My name is Bernie Fraddle, who comes
you live for the Fox Sports Radio studios here in
La Vegas. Take after three am Pacific and six am Eastern.
And don't look now, but Tuesday night it all begins again.
We're talking about the National Basketball Association. Three simple words.

(01:20:37):
It's that time. Mark Medina back in the fold. Medina Magic,
our Fox Sports Radio NBA guru and a writer for
essentially sports, joins us. Mark. It's upon us. The future
always has a way of a riding, arriving ahead.

Speaker 16 (01:20:52):
Of schedule, Bernie, it sure does. And I know that
there's a lot to unpack. I presume you'll have Lebron
James and re update questions. I'm sure you'll have even
Browny James injury update questions.

Speaker 2 (01:21:05):
Hell, we might even do Bryce James the whole clarity. Well,
who knows it?

Speaker 16 (01:21:13):
Forth, Lebron made it known he's not weighing on that timeline,
so well I got.

Speaker 2 (01:21:18):
To tell you, yeah, sure whatever, Hey, no, in all seriousness, Okay,
because I delve into this, Let's talk about Lebron's injury.
It was reported what three to four weeks? Not buying it.
I'm told we joked about this a couple of weeks ago,
the paint of the button. Now it's to sciatica, and
he's been dealing with us since early summer. I'm going

(01:21:40):
to predict we don't see Lebron on the floor till December.
I'm going to predict he misses twenty games. This is
a serious injury. And that's why I bring you on, Mark,
because you can set the record straight, or you can
give me your rejoinder.

Speaker 16 (01:21:52):
I think everything's on the table. You know, you could
be very well right, but who knows. I mean, sciatica
is a very serious injury. Now, I'm always saying this
for some perspective, but I think for Minors, saying the
nature of the injury is different. But Steve Nash had
sciatic issues during the tail end of his career and

(01:22:14):
entering training camp in the twenty fourteen to fifteen season.
You know what happened that season. Just before the regular
season started, they announced that he would be out for
the entire season, and then he eventually announced his retirement
towards spring. So what your prediction is, it's not unreasonable,
but I think for what it's worth, the nature of

(01:22:36):
this specific injury is not as severe, and so I
also want to be surprised that projected November timeline hits.
But the bottom line is this anything can happen. Because
when you're at forty years old about to turn forty
one in December thirtieth, Father time doesn't just throw a

(01:22:57):
bunch of punches with his right hand and his left hand.
Of a sudden, there's multiple hands that are throwing jobs
at you.

Speaker 2 (01:23:04):
Well, the thing that's concerning I think, in all seriousness,
he's been dealing with this for almost three months now,
so it hasn't healed to this point. I guess it
was just a routine offseason workout. And to your point,
Marcus spot on. He's forty one, he's got a lot
of mileage on that body, going up and down ninety
four feet on wooden floors for the last twenty five years.

(01:23:25):
So he's not going to heal as fast as he
normally would. So it's a wait and see situation. You'll
be on with me every show. I'm going to predict.
I'm not wishing it on him, but I'm going to
predict you're not going to see him before December.

Speaker 16 (01:23:40):
Well, think about this, Bernie. Even in the best case
scenario mid December, that already knocks him out about fourteen games.
And you know it's an eighty two game schedule. But
there's an old adage in the NBA that front offices
can evaluate a team after twenty five games, and so
that the huge chunk of games where in the wild

(01:24:03):
Wow Western Conference, where there's a bunch of teams that
are worthy of making the playoffs, are worthy of making
the plan, this is going to matter now. I think
the saving grace that the Lakers have is they have
this player named Luka Dodgic on their team who's not
only a really great player, but I think he'll win
MVP this season. He's in you know, tip top shape.

(01:24:26):
He's a lot healthier than he was last season. You
know that the Lakers aren't championship contenders, but they do
have a better roster around Luca with having a lob
threat pick and roll partner with DeAndre Aid and some
good defenders in the backcourt that can help them with
Marcus Smart and Gave Vincent and so we've seen Luka

(01:24:47):
Dodgrich carry a team on his back, and so I
think that's the thing that gives the Lakers at least
some relative calm that from a bottom line results standpoint,
Lucas single handedly can at least make sure that they
have a winning record while Lebron's out.

Speaker 2 (01:25:05):
Well, I'm glad you mentioned Gabe Vincent because it's my
understanding that Gabe Vincent will start in Lebron's absence. Is
that true? We're talking about a guy who average is
about six points a game. He's six foot two. That
in and of itself doesn't mean anything. But if you're
six foot two, why not start? Brownie James what they out.

Speaker 16 (01:25:26):
Jokes tonight, well even more than he normally do.

Speaker 2 (01:25:30):
Don't forget to try the semi boneless spaghetti In all seriousness.
Am I right about the gay Vincent thing? Though?

Speaker 16 (01:25:35):
Well, yes, let me parse us through though, because he's
not the definitive starter. He started the preseason finale against
the Kings.

Speaker 14 (01:25:43):
J J.

Speaker 16 (01:25:43):
Reddick made it clear that outside of Lebron and players
that weren't available, that this would be their final so
called dress rehearsal of what the Starry lineup would look
like opening night. So game Vincent is going to be
that fifth starter opening night against the Warriors. But JJ
red at caution that the starting lineup is very much
subject to change, So I don't know how much of

(01:26:05):
a sample size he's going to give that, but it's
going to be fluid now. Gave Vincent is a respectable player.
He has been hitting a lot of good shots in preseason.
I know it's preseason basketball, but he was a pretty
good player on the Miami Heat team that went to
the finals in twenty twenty three. But I think the
other thing is he's a good locker room guy. He's
a great defender, you know, on the perimeter, so he's

(01:26:29):
going to shield Luca from some of that responsibility. But
I will say that starting lineup combination did surprise some
Laker fans because even in today's NBA positionless basketball, they
are a pretty small lineup with you know, three guards
in the starting lineup. But you know, it's imperfect solutions

(01:26:50):
and gave a respectable player. But I think it is
going to be matchup driven and if they do find
a team that has a lot more size, they'll adjust accordingly.

Speaker 2 (01:27:02):
Talk Mark Medina or Fox Sports Radio, NBA Gur writer
for Essentially Sports. I want to get into a very
meaty topic, I think, and that's what we do in
our segment. After a six year break, the NBA is
returning to China, and I guess the Brooklyn Nets and
Phoenix Suns played a preseason game there. But here's the

(01:27:23):
situation coming out of the twenty nineteen dispute with you know,
Darryl Morey posted a tweet about the Hong Kong protesters,
et cetera, et cetera. It's taken a long time to reconcile,
and China is a kind of a crucial market for
the NBA. They have a massive fan base. What is
your prognosis for a future relationship with the NBA and

(01:27:45):
China and can it be what it was in the past.

Speaker 16 (01:27:48):
Yeah, I think that this was kind of the first
sign of back to normal. You know, I think that
the fascinating thing with this is that there were a
lot of stages. Even though you know, the NBA got
a lot of criticism for its business relationships with China
because of the theratarian government and their human rights violations.

(01:28:09):
You know, when there was a lot of outrage for
Daryl Moury, you know, supporting the Hong Kong protesters, in
the NBA's defense, they you know, defended his freedom of speech.
They waved off any pressure from the Chinese government from
actually firing Daryl Moury. They made it clear like Daryl

(01:28:31):
Mory's not a league official, he works for an actual team.
So they did stand up for those things. Now, they
did essentially tell everyone, you know, shut up and dribble,
don't get into politics when you're in China. But the
reason why it took five years wasn't just about you know,

(01:28:52):
letting the temperature calm down. You know, the pandemic complicated
things because they couldn't even travel anyway. So you know,
it took a few years for all those things to
settle put but before twenty nineteen, the NBA was having
you know, preseason events in China every year, so I

(01:29:13):
expect that's what it's going to be moving forward. And
they've often done that in other places too. They've done
that in India, They've done that in London, They've done
that in Spain, They're starting to do it in Mexico City.
The NBA cares about domestic audience and they don't want
to lose sight of that, but they also know that

(01:29:34):
going global has been a huge innovator on why it's
become such a popular league, getting back to the ninety
two Dream Team in the Olympics in Barcelona. So it's
a significant revenue stream. The biggest revenue stream is the
TV rights deal that's happened in the United States, but
you know all the global revenue streams, I would argue

(01:29:55):
it is probably a distance second.

Speaker 2 (01:29:57):
Charlie Mark Medina Medina Magic every Saturday night here on
the Bernie Fraders Show. Also a writer now for essentially sports.
I want to circle back to Lebron and be fair
because even though he hasn't won a championship since twenty twenty,
the record, the numbers show viewership numbers are down when

(01:30:18):
he doesn't play, and the Lakers are going to play
a ton of national games this year, including with the
Warriors Tuesday Night. We're a one and a half point
favorite home dog. I'm sure you'll be at that game.
I'm imagining right.

Speaker 16 (01:30:34):
Yeah, I'll be at that game for sure.

Speaker 2 (01:30:35):
Yeah. So, how does the league feel about this from
the global perspective that they might not have Lebron for
a couple of months.

Speaker 16 (01:30:43):
Yeah, the NBA never likes it when Lebron James's absence.
To your point, he is a huge driver for the
league's popularity, both for fans and people that don't care
for him. But I think as long as there's an
influx of all the other main stars available, it can
offset that. I remember in the twenty nineteen twenty season,

(01:31:07):
they really took a hit with the TV ratings because
guys like Lebron, Steph Curry, Anthony Davis, Zion Williamson, they
were Kevin Durant, they all had notable injuries all at
the same time, and so that really hurt the league. Now,
to be clear, with TV ratings, it's not like they're

(01:31:27):
losing money. The TV money comes from the contracts itself,
but they're mindful that, you know, when people seen in
the game that gets some interest in the product, that
got the to future games, to buy tickets and buy merchandise,
and so Lebron is a pretty significant part of that
revenue stream, but.

Speaker 8 (01:31:47):
So are all the other stars.

Speaker 16 (01:31:48):
So as it pertains to Lakers Warriors, you know, it's
still going to help that players like Steph Curry, Luka, Doncic,
and Draymond Green are suiting up as well as you know,
two notable franchises that have pretty uh devoted fan bases
with the Lakers and the Warriors.

Speaker 2 (01:32:05):
Wrapping it up with Mark Medinah, Mark, I got to
ask about Russell Westbrook. With all due respect, he's thirty
six years old. He's way past his prime whatever that was.
And uh, if you're just a casual observer looking from
the outside in is Sacramento, Uh, are they putting together
a woody out on nostalgia movie or what is going

(01:32:27):
on here? Because this is a lineup not built to compete?
So what what's the reason they signed Russell Westbrook?

Speaker 7 (01:32:35):
Yeah?

Speaker 16 (01:32:35):
I think availability. Uh, you know, he didn't sign with
anyone because the market dictated that he's not as valuable as.

Speaker 8 (01:32:42):
He once was.

Speaker 16 (01:32:43):
So that's number two. Number number one, number two. The
Kings aren't expected to be a contending team or even
a playoff team. They have good players individually, DeMar DeRozan,
Zach Lavine, you know, Demontese Bonis, Keegan Murray, but they're
already managing injuries and games haven't even started yet with
the Monte Sebonis, that Kegan Murray, and so I think

(01:33:05):
from their point of view, it's just adding another body,
it's giving them roster flexibility, and I can't help but laugh.
The Kings were in LA for their final preseason game
against the Lakers. Doug Christie, the King's coach, is saying,
you know, he just wants Russ to be the Russ,
like he's the millionth coach to say the same thing,
and then that team winds up finding out that, you

(01:33:27):
know what, for all his competitiveness, he still has serious
flaws in his game with his shooting, his defense, his adaptability,
and so you know, when you look at his track
record the last years with the Lakers, Clippers, the Nuggets,
it just hasn't been a good fit because he hasn't
been able to adjust his game. Even with the competitiveness

(01:33:49):
and his willingness to come off the bench. Eventually the
weaknesses are too big to ignore.

Speaker 2 (01:33:54):
No that Mark, that's so true. You pegged that last
year hitting into the playoffs with Denver. I mean it,
just wait, just Russ becomes Russ, all right. So Mark,
it's upon us look forward to get you back on
next week, as we'll have games under our belt and
I'm sure plenty of new headlines to grace our NBA segment.

Speaker 16 (01:34:14):
Bernie, I'm sure we'll talk about Lebron and Browny again,
just as we always.

Speaker 2 (01:34:17):
So that's right. I can't wait. Have a good week ahead, Mark, Thank.

Speaker 13 (01:34:21):
You, you too.

Speaker 7 (01:34:22):
Take care.

Speaker 2 (01:35:22):
We're back at the Bernie Frattle Show Fox Sports Radio
either way, five hours and seven minutes from the resumption
of NFL Week seven. How about that? Can Indiana win
a national championship in football this year?

Speaker 7 (01:35:40):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (01:35:41):
I say they can. When you consider what Kurt Signetti
has done in just twenty games in Indiana, it's nothing
short of remarkable. They're basically a shoeing now for the
college football Playoff, pending something completely unforeseen that I wouldn't
be able to get my mind around, and they've got
the makeup to legitimately continue what's been started. Let me

(01:36:06):
give you just a little revisionist history here, see, because
a few weeks ago, Oregon went to Penn State and
they sort of struggled in the first half, but in
the second half, their offense got going and they hammered
Penn State at Penn State, and yeah, that went overtime,
but Oregon really did what they wanted in the second half. Well,

(01:36:30):
Orton was a check that Indiana was a twenty seven
point favorite against Michigan State Saturday, and they toyed with
Michigan State in the first half and the second half
they kind of played with the food and they won
thirty eight to twenty three. So why do I bring
that up? Because it was last Saturday's the game against
Oregon that caused us all to look at this team differently.

(01:36:53):
They were violent on defense, they set the edges, they
have two NFL wide receivers, and Fernanda Mendoz's goods. See
because in that game, Oregon also started slow on offense
in the first half. But here's the thing. They never
got going because Indiana's defense held Dante more who was

(01:37:15):
everybody's favorite for the Heisman Trophy two weeks ago. They
held him completely in check for the rest of the afternoon.
In the second half. Now, this is Oregon in augstin
Nobody does this to Oregon in Onsen. They only gathered
sixty four yards of offense. Yes, they had ten second
half points. Seven became courtesy of a pick six, three

(01:37:37):
with a field goal, And as the game went on,
you saw the Indiana Hoosiers football team due to the
Oregon Ducks in Oregon what America has seen Oregon do
to so many teams over the past several years, which
means imposing their will. Indiana has a Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback,

(01:38:00):
an offensive line that's extremely physical upfront, and they will
outwork you. They outworked a mighty team like Oregon, and
they played violent, nasty, suffocating defense at Oregon. And by
the way, Indiana's ability to run the ball has been
questioned heading into the Oregon game. They didn't go nuts

(01:38:20):
against Oregon on the ground. In fact, they averaged three
yards or carry. But it was enough because that opened
up enough passing lanes and created time for Fernando Mendoza,
who through for two point fifteen and a touchdown. So
by dominating Oregon last week, especially in the second half,
Indiana made the statement We're not just some happy go

(01:38:42):
lucky you feel good story. Maybe we'll find our way
back into the college football Playoff like we did last year. No,
this is a team that's not showing up to Hail Caesar.
They want a conqueror Caesar. Now, if you're into analytics,
I got nothing against analytics. I've told people a thousand times.
For me, analytics are a guideline. They are not an
inflexible anchor. The game is played by human beings. Indiana

(01:39:05):
can win the whole damn thing, even though the projection
models only give them a five percent chance, primarily because
they're in the same conference as Ohio State and they
remain the favorite. But this is going to be decided
on the field. And if Indiana can do to Oregon
what they did to Oregon in Oregon, and look what

(01:39:26):
they did Illinois, it beat him sixty three to ten,
they're smoking teams. And I just explained why. But the
game at Oregon showcase their ability to perform against the
top rank opponent. Right, it wasn't just a win. It
was an historic ten point road win against Oregon, whose
ranked third first ever road win for Indiana against the

(01:39:49):
top five team for the program. Best best of my knowledge, again,
can they win it all? Yes, I think they can.
Now you have to do it. But under the leadership
of Kurtz Signetti Indiana, it proved dramatically over last year
and they were pretty good last year. They went from
a successful program last year, I would say, to a

(01:40:13):
legitimate national title contender this year. Last year Signetti and
Indiana won eleven games, they got a trip to the
College Football Playoff appearance. But this team has built on
that success in a big way. They are a legitimate
national championship contender. Hey, they started this season with a
second They what a seven to zero record, They got

(01:40:36):
a point differential of two hundred and sixteen. They're dominating people.
They're dominating people, and they're four to zero the Big Ten.

Speaker 10 (01:40:44):
So what more.

Speaker 2 (01:40:45):
Fernando Mendoza, the quarterback transfer from Cal, He's also emerged
as a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate. He is the engine
behind that offense. But you've got other key offensive players
like their receivers Elijah Sir, Omar Cooper, E J. Williams.
Two of those are going to play in the NFL.
They're contributing significantly. And again, the defense allowing only eleven

(01:41:07):
points a game and they have plenty of standout players
most of you haven't heard of. And yes, you know
Illinois they held them to ten. Illinois beat USC they
held Oregon to twenty. No one does that, not in outsen.
So you ask yourself, can Indiana win the National Championship?
I say yes, I genuinely, I genuinely believe they can't.

(01:41:31):
I can't get it out of my mind.

Speaker 10 (01:41:32):
You know.

Speaker 2 (01:41:33):
Sometimes again I said this many times. I trust my eyes.
They tell me a lot. And when I saw Indiana
set the edges against Oregon with such authority, they were
violent on defense, they won the line of scrimmage, and
they were incredibly efficient on offense. They were not overmatched,
they were poised. They were the anti Penn State, literally

(01:41:54):
the anti Penn State. And if there's only one knock
you have to have on James Frankin. It just felt
like a lot of times these teams, particularly in big games,
did not play free and easy. There was tension there,
there was something there that inhibited them. But I digress.
All right, we are five hours away from kickoff. You
got to get your fantasy lineups set, get your pens

(01:42:15):
and pencils ready. Here comes some knowledge. It's time for
the Fantasy Files.

Speaker 3 (01:42:23):
Fantasy Files with Brandon Deutsch, your go to fantasy football
segment A Got one Gone.

Speaker 14 (01:42:32):
Hello, and welcome to Fantasy Files with Brandon Deutsch on
The Bernie Frado Show. We're gonna win our matchups this
weekend like we do every week, and we're gonna start
Jamison Williams against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jamison Williams had
that breakout game last week. He wasn't too great the
few weeks before that, but Tampa Bay is one of
the worst secondaries in all football, which is shocking considering

(01:42:52):
how dominant they've been so far this season. I would
sit Keenan Allen against the Colts. Qj's back. You got
Lad McConkey, whose target has been substantial all year, but
the production's finally catching up to him. I would make
sure that Keenan Allen stays on your reg especially after
back to back six or less fantasy point games. I'd
start Jordan Addison against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Speaker 2 (01:43:13):
This is a big game to go.

Speaker 14 (01:43:15):
Up against Ringo and Adorri Jackson, who have been picked
on week after week by opposing wide receivers. Now, justin Jefferson,
we know is gonna go off, but I think Jordan
Adison and Justin Jefferson can both go off against this
Eagles secondary that can be exploited this season. I'd sit
Bam Knight against the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay has
one of the best run defenses in all of football.

(01:43:35):
What's their big problem their secondary, right, and they're gonna
be down the entire game the Cardinals, so they're not
gonna run, They're gonna have to pass. They're gonna be
down the entire game. So Bam Knight is not gonna
get any looks. The only fantasy production possible for him
is a touchdown. Make sure to start Jordan Mason against
the Philadelphia Eagles. I'm starting Jefferson, I'm starting Adison. I'm
starting Jordan Mason against the Eagles. I don't like this

(01:43:57):
game at all. From the Eagles side of things. I
think Saquon can go off of besides him if we're
looking at simply the Minnesota Vikings. In this game, Jordan
Mason is going against a defense that has given up
one hundred yards a game to running backs. They're sixth
in the league at six most rushing yards per game,
giving up the Philadelphia Eagles. So Jordan Mason's gonna get

(01:44:18):
a touchdown, He'll get one hundred plus yards rushing. They're
coming off of the bye, so he's healthier, the whole
team's healthier. I think this is a nice spot for
Minnesota to actually win this game. I'd sit Ovin Kamara
against the Chicago Bears, whose run defense has looked better.
Kamara hasn't done anything all year, and Kendrey Miller gets
a lot of snaps. The percentages for him keep going up.
I would keep him on the bench. I'd start lat
McConkey against the Indianapolis Colts. Really like that matchup for him.

(01:44:41):
I mean, he's coming off of back to back games
where he's just gone off and he's gonna do it again.
I don't think QJ being back changes much. I truly
think that this is going to be when one of
the better starts of the week. I'd sit Hollywood Brown
against the Las Vegas Raiders. I just don't like any
Chiefs that aren't named Rashee Rice moving forward at the
flex position. That means that Xavier Worthy and Travis Kelcey

(01:45:05):
are actually shaky starts on a weekly basis. In Hollywood Brown,
Taekwon Thornton. Their days are over of production. Is so
Rashi Rice monopoly on this offense. Moving forward, I would
start Michael Pittman against the Chargers. This is a game
where I think the Chargers defense does get exploited. Their
secondary hasn't played that well. I like Michael Pittman to
have another big game. He's had a really resurgence year,

(01:45:26):
I would say because last year he didn't have a
great year. I know Anthony Richardson was playing quarterback, and
the quarterback changes a lot. Daniel Jones has played great.
I do think the Chargers win this game, but I
think Michael Pittman will have fifteen to twenty fantasy points.
I would make sure to also say Xavier Worthy against
the Raiders again Rashee Rice monopoly, that he's a must
start again if you guys want to go into must starts.

Speaker 2 (01:45:46):
I don't think it needs to be said.

Speaker 14 (01:45:47):
If you've kept Rashi Rice for about seven weeks, you
should be setting him in your lineup right like he
has to start if you drafted him.

Speaker 2 (01:45:55):
He is a wide receiver one.

Speaker 14 (01:45:56):
I think he's one of the more disrespected players in
the National Football League, especially in fantasy football. I would
make sure to sit all other chiefs in that at
the flex position on that roster except Travis Calsey. I
think Travis Calsey is a solid start in this game
as well. At start Kendrick Bourne against the Atlanta Falcons.
This is a primetime game. Who's going to be playing
quarterback for the San Francisco forty nine ers.

Speaker 2 (01:46:16):
Guess what?

Speaker 14 (01:46:16):
It's Mac Jones again. So who's his favorite target?

Speaker 2 (01:46:18):
Kendrick Bourne?

Speaker 14 (01:46:19):
Who did he play with the New England? Kendrick Bourne?
Who have we said to start the last few weeks?
Kendrick Bourne? And who's been right us? Kenrick Bourne is
going to go off again. I'm pretty confident about that,
and I make sure to sit Cooper Cup against the
Houston secondary that is elite. Stingley's awesome. They have one
of the best pass defenses in all of football. I
expect JSN to be able to go off, but not
Cooper Cup. Make sure to start Rashad White against the

(01:46:40):
Detroit Lions. No Bucky Irvan again, primetime matchup for sehad
White has utilized in the passing game, as are all
starting running backs for the Buccaneers. Didn't matter if Bucky
or Rashad was playing, They're going to be must starts.
Sit Kenneth Walker against the Houston Texans. Don't like this
matchup at all. Canine is getting like his carries are
getting taken away by Zach Charbonay in the red zone,

(01:47:00):
so that already limits his fantasy upside because he's not
getting touchdowns right, and you couple that with the fact
that he's had four Fantasy points in back to back games.
He's just not trustworthy. And a guy that I would
lock in start is Quinn Shawn Judkins against Miami. I
think this is one of the better starts of the week.
Miami's run defense is atrocious, and I'd sit Tyler Algier
against the San Francisco forty nine ers on prime time.

(01:47:21):
I really think that he's not going to do anything,
especially if Bijean is going to go off. I know
Algier had a touchdown last week, but I just don't
see it happening again, especially against the San Francisco run
defense that has been pretty good recently.

Speaker 2 (01:47:32):
Well that's it for me today.

Speaker 14 (01:47:33):
I'm Brandan Deutsch on The Bernie Frido Show with fantasy files.
You can find me at PSD Takes on x Brandan
s Deutsch on TikTok and Instagram. Back to you, Bernie,
let's all win our matchups.

Speaker 2 (01:47:44):
Yeah, the comments on the forty nine ers talkins game
caught my attention most. I think this is a Mike
Kyle Shanahan's statement game. Mac joneson Kendrick Bord the Front Defense.
Hope you took notes there, because fantasy football is it's
kind of big business. My son's in a big time league.

(01:48:05):
He's in first place and the Winter wins. I'm not
going to give you them a month. They're going to win,
but it's a nice, nice little chunk of change. Speaking
of money. Speaking of money, you know, we talked a
lot about James Franklin tonight and the Penn State is
going to owe him fifty million, which to pay they
give him every penny part of the deal. They're not

(01:48:29):
the only ones. Penn State is not the only college
football program that's going to be spending money on a
coach that's no longer working there. As a matter of fact,
it's been a As I said at the top of
the show, this has been an incredibly eventful college football
season so far. What if I told you that college
football programs will in fact spend north of two hundred

(01:48:53):
million in bios this season alone, and we're not even
done yet. I'll give you some details coming up. I'm
Bernie Fraddle. We're coming to line from Las Vegas Fox
Sports Radio Studios. Keep it locked. You're listening to the
Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio. How We're back
at the Bernie Frattle Show Fox Sports Radio, comingy live
from the Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio Studios. We are

(01:49:17):
what four hours and forty six minutes away from the
Rams and the Jacksonville Jaguars teeing it up in London
as NFL Week seven resumes after what has been another
rockets college football Saturday. We had a caller on our
midnight hour mentioned, in somewhat amazement, how can you pay

(01:49:41):
a guy fifty million dollars not to work? Well, this
is the era of college football that we are in.
As I said at the top of the show, the
old Chinese proverb may you live in interesting times? We are.
This has been an incredibly crazy college football Season's already
been nine coaches is fired. Of course, you know about

(01:50:02):
James Franklin at Penn State. Mike Gundi to Oklahoma State,
Trent Dilford, Alabama Birmingham, Brent Priet Virginia Tech, Trent Bray
at Oregon State, Deshaan Foster EA c LA, Troy Taylor
at Stanford, Kenny Burns at Kent State, Sam Pittman at Arkansas.
Well added up, and the respective schools who made the

(01:50:27):
decision to send these guys packing will be spending upwards
of two hundred million or more in buyouts. Now, it's
not that these schools are going to go broke doing this.
They just piss away money. They're about as irresponsibly irresponsible
their money is. You could find again early half basically

(01:50:51):
this weekend was sort of the facto halfway point of
the college football season. Now, I don't you know, look,
I don't want to the dead man walking stuff. People
have said, you know, Billion Napier could be gone. Luke
Fickel at Wisconsin already could be gone, perhaps Gary Norville.

(01:51:12):
And I'm not wishing that on any of those guys.
Nor am I predicting it. This is just the group
think echo chambers speaking. But let's get to the chase.
By the year's in the combined cost of all the
biouts already are going to be more than two hundred
million dollars. How is it? This is what the caller
was asking. How the hell is it that these institutions

(01:51:34):
manage to negotiate these contracts and hamstring themselves by having
to pay two hundred million dollars to people who will
no longer be working for them anymore. Okay, two hundred
million dollars is enough to pay for several thousand full scholarships,

(01:51:57):
so we're not talking about chump chains here. And how
does schools keep agreeing to these? You can call them
ridiculous one sided coaching contracts that cost I don't have
a funny line, cost a lot. So consider let's consider
the mechanics of what takes place in these negotiations. Okay,

(01:52:18):
you have the athletics director, who I wouldn't want that job,
couldn't wish it on me. They spend ninety almost one
hundred percent of their time fundraising marketing facilities, answering fan
mail about why do your hot dogs suck? Why are
the concession stands lines too long? And then they also

(01:52:39):
have to hire a coach, not that often but more
often than usual, but typically every three to five years. Okay,
and you have to do it quickly. You can't mess around.
But on the other side, now you have highly trained,
experienced superagents and their job is to represent the coaches
and to get them as much money as astible, even

(01:53:03):
if their client is fired. And the truth of the
matter is the agents are a hell of a lot
better at doing what they do, then the athletic directors
are better at doing what they do. Let's take James Franklin,
because he he is going to uh, you know, his
results at about twenty five percent of all the bounce

(01:53:24):
of all the coaches fired, there's been nine so far.
So he was hired back in twenty fourteen. He'd done
a great job at at Vanderbilt. He'd turned that program around.

Speaker 14 (01:53:34):
And I.

Speaker 2 (01:53:37):
You should remember this if you're a sports fan. Coming
out of the whole Jerry Sandusky debacle, it just looked
awful for Penn State. They even took Joe Paterno's statue down,
and they had they were in this post scandal NCAA
consent degree to decree and they were in. They were in.

(01:53:57):
They weren't in purgatory, they were in hell. And somehow
by his third season James Franklin won a Big Ten championship.
In fact, he won eleven games in three of the
four seasons. Up until twenty nineteen, the COVID year, they
weren't good. They were four and five. But then in
twenty twenty one they started out five and oh and

(01:54:20):
actually had two wins over ranked opponents, and they went
from number nineteen in the preseason all the way up
to number four. While this was going on, USC fired
Clay Hilton two games into the season, and that created
sort of this almost season long speculation on who would
be the Trojans next coach. Well, guess whose name kept

(01:54:43):
showing up. Guess whose name rocketed to the top list
of candidates, Yeah, you guessed it, James Franklin. By the
end of the season, it was reported that James Franklin
had fired his agent hired super agent Jimmy Sexton. Jimmy

(01:55:04):
Sexton is a guy who's negotiated hundreds of millions of
dollars in contracts, salaries, and of course buyouts for people
like Kirby Smart, Nick Saban, Liam Kiffen and The Caller
also brought up Jimbo Fisher member Jimbo Fisher got sent
packing by Texas A and m They gave him ninety

(01:55:26):
million reasons to leave, and they paid it well. Jess
who negotiated that contract Jimmy Sexton. So Sexton wasted no
time and leveraging the fact that James Franklin, who had
been reported at the time was a little nonplus with

(01:55:48):
some of Penn State's facilities and some of their other
football investments, and allegedly had made statements to the athletic
director for Penn Stayed at the time. I believe his
name was Sandy Barber, that she needed to do meet
some demands or else all of a sudden, So this
guy's got all this leverage. But unfortunately, as the negotiation

(01:56:14):
went on, Franklin did what Franklin it's been sort of
his moniker. Lost some games he shouldn't have lost. They
lost to Michigan, they lost to Illinois, and all of
a sudden, they're seven and four heading into Thanksgiving week.
But in the negotiation Barbara announced, screw it, we're gonna

(01:56:37):
keep Jane Franklin. They gave him a ten year, seventy
five million dollar contract extension fully guaranteed for a coach,
even though he'd accomplished a lot, had not yet even
reached the college football playoffs in eight full seasons there,
and we don't know if he was bluffing or he
would have really gone to sc or s he would
have hired him. USC ended up hiring Lincoln Riley. That's

(01:57:00):
his story for another day. But that's just a tip
of the iceberg. See, coaching salaries have gone through the
roof in the last twenty years. I mean, remember, in
addition to the windfall that James Franklin got, USC gave
Lincoln Riley, who had come from Oklahoma, a ten year,
one hundred and ten million dollar contract. And what the hell,

(01:57:23):
let's you said, we've got fomo, Let's give Brian Kelly
a ten year ninety five million dollar deal. And the
most insane deal at that time was the ten year,
seventy five million dollar deal Michigan gave. Checked that Michigan
State gave mel Tucker, who's since been fired. But if
you go back and remember Meltucker his first two years

(01:57:47):
beat Michigan his first two years, which caused him to
walk on water temporarily. But here's the real kicker. None
of the four schools I just mentioned, Oklahoma, Michigan State, USC,
or pen State have gotten the return they really wanted.
But what they have done is reset the market for
every other coach who's looking to get paid. Big Texas

(01:58:11):
A and m you know, gust Malzan at Auburn. All
these guys get these massive, massive buyouts. By the way,
according to a USA Today coaching database that lists salaries
that was recently put forth to the public, of the

(01:58:33):
thirty highest paid coaches in college football, none of them
have a buyout of less than twenty million dollars. That's
how that happens. So the truth of the matter is
the money is there, agents are shrewd, the pressure to

(01:58:53):
win is enormous, and even though there are no guarantees,
you're going to pay through the nose to get a guy.
And I'll be curious to see, let's say, just for
purposes of this discussion, Pennce State hires Matt Rule. They're
gonna probably have to break the bank or Mike Elko
probably have to break the bank. And if four years

(01:59:14):
down the road neither one do the job and the
same thing happens, they'll pay through the nose to wave
goodbye as well. And that's the way college football rolls.
Circa twenty twenty five if you are wondering how these
things happen, how a guy can be paid fifty million
to go home? Keep it locked and listened to Bernie

(01:59:34):
Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (01:59:37):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.

Speaker 2 (01:59:40):
Well that's right, you heard the man. Bernie Fratterles show
keeps rolling right along. My name is Bernie Frattle. We
are coming you live from the Fox Sports Radio studios
here in Las Vegas. Take you up to three am Pacific,
since the am Eastern. We are four and a half
hours away from Rams. Jacksonville in London. Is seven of

(02:00:01):
the National Football League season continues. After Thursday Night's track
beat between they called the icy Hot Bull. Well, if
he played that game, he might have needed some icy hot.
There was nothing but points. The theme tonight has sort
of been the craziness of the college football season because

(02:00:22):
it simply has been. And I've got more to get
to because there have been surprises or it's been disappointments,
and I just kind of want to have this mid
term analysis as it were. I mean, we had three
teams that started this college football season in the top
four of the AP twenty five, and three of the

(02:00:42):
top four spent time now not even ranked one, just
fired its head coach. Now, if there's one thing that's
consistent in college football, it's change, So we have major changes. Again.
I've talked about this team a lot, but just to
put a caper on it, Indiana has surprised probably more

(02:01:03):
than any other team in college football. We knew they
were good. They were good last year. I didn't know
they'd be this good this year and the first year
of the Kurtz signety era. They talked about the soft
schedule and they got in and they didn't fare great
in the playoffs, but they've beaten two top ten teams
in six games. They body slammed Illinois and then they

(02:01:24):
went into Oregon at Oustin Stadium and Oregon at the time,
I had not lost a home season game since October
twenty twenty three. That was the longest active home win streak.
Rank number third. They hand Oregon their first regular season loss,
thirty to twenty. It was incredibly impressive. Fernando Mendoza is

(02:01:45):
the quarterback. Curtis Rourke was capable last year, but Fernanda
Mendoza is a Heisman Trophy guy. But Indiana's defense is legit.
They ranked eighth nationally and yards per played aloud. I
mean we're talking the Alabama's, the Ohio States, and Georgia's.
Indiana is you have to mention them in that mix. Now,
they were violent against Oregon State, they accept the edges,

(02:02:05):
they won the line of scrimmage. But they're not the
only team that's been a pleasant surprise this year. How
about the Virginia Cavaliers now Tony Elliott And this is
where sometimes patience matters. In his first three years as
Virginia's head coach, he only won eleven games. Actually, Virginia
has a chance to win that many this year. They

(02:02:26):
score points at will. They're averaging forty three points a game,
and they've got a quarterback who's on his four school
of six season, again the weirdness of college football, Chandler Moore,
seventy percent completion rate. They have a bunch of other
guys that have contributed. Yes, they had a bad loss
sort of to North Carolina State in Week two, but

(02:02:51):
go figure, this actually didn't count as a conference game.
So the three and zero in the ACC five and
one overall. How about the Cincinnati Bearcats. Yes, it's a
make or break season for Scott's sadderfield, but so far,
and again he's only a third year coach. It this
is how they do it now. When you pay these
kind of big bucks, well, you know you gotta come through.

(02:03:14):
Cincinnati's done that. They're six and one, they're winning big.
They are probably in line for a pretty good bowl game.
I don't think there'll be a playoff team, but Cincinnati's
a sneaky contender for a conference title. I'm not sure
that they'll do it in the Big Twelve. But again,

(02:03:35):
there's an offense that is producing and it's got the
kind of results for Cincinnati that's got them in the
national conversation. Same with the USF. They started out that
blowout that an opening Wells Labor Day weekend. It was
a Friday night game. They blew out a Boise State
team that was actually ranked twenty fifth at the time,

(02:03:57):
and they were expected to be good. They reached earn
sixty seven percent of their production from last year. But
then not only did USF beat Boise State, they follow
up the next week and knocked off Florida, and that
was in a swamp where Florida had just beaten Texas. Again,
it's a crazy year. All right. Now, they did get

(02:04:18):
their butt handed to them by Miami, but since then
they're averaging about sixty points a game. So look, if
you lef can stay away from turnovers, they are a
type of team that can give anybody, just about anybody
a scare. But again, a very pleasant surprise. But James
Franklin's old team, Vanderbilt, oh my goodness. They were two

(02:04:42):
and a half point favorite Saturday to LSU. Haven't been
a favorite against sales Usonince nineteen forty seven. Vanderbilt is
now six to one, and they look good doing it.
They're somewhat similar to Indiana. They're a team that had
success in twenty twenty four that was unexpected, but this
year it looks more like genuine magic. They have a quarterback,

(02:05:06):
a very dynamic quarterback in Diego Pavia. He's basically picked
up where he left off. He's also a Heisman finalist.
The sign of a good team is you have to
beat good opponents. You can't just beat inferior opponents. Well,
believe it or not, Vanderbilt has now beaten five straight
Top twenty five opponents, and they're also in the top

(02:05:27):
twenty five. Well. The list of teams that have disappointed
is frankly crazier than the teams that have been pleasant surprises.
I'm getting tired of talking about ten State, but we
have to. They were picked by a lot of folks,
not me, to win it all this year. Now they're
three and four. They're three and four, and they're zero

(02:05:50):
to four in the Big Ten. Did you hear that
Penn State is own four in the Big Ten seven
games of the season. They are now with an interim coach.
You lost in his debut to Iowa Saturday. Six games in.
They will be paying out the second biggest buy out
in the history of college football. As you know, James
Franklin was let go after three straight losses and drew

(02:06:12):
allers out for the rest of the year. It looks
like they brought in Jim Knowles from Ohio State to
take the defense to quote the national championship level, and
in truth, they've regressed. Nothing has gone right for Penn State.
If it was Randon Nichols, they'd beholding a sieve. Everything
they do is gone just bad. This is an ugly

(02:06:32):
season for Penn State. We'll see who they hire. Not
much better for Davilos Swiney, they're three and four. I
didn't buy this that they We were told the pieces
were in place for Clemson to return to national title contention,
and they allegedly had this. Now they've had this in
the past and what you would call an NFL themed
defensive line in a quarterback who they want to tell

(02:06:55):
us about Heisman buzz I never bought it. Kate Klebnick,
he's a tough guy and he's a competitor. But they
just don't They don't move the needle, not even close.
Clemson has completely face planted. They're worse start in twenty
two years. Last year Dabos Swinney somehow got the Clemson

(02:07:15):
team out of a three loss hole. But look when
those when you start losing games to non conference opponents
like they did last year and this year, you pick
up where you left off and you lose games that
people expected to win. Look, look, Clemson, if they go

(02:07:36):
to the College Playoff this year, it will be as
a spectator. Meanwhile, Texas man, they escaped that. Kentucky and
Kentucky's you're better than people think. But they're five and two,
they're two and one in the SEC. And you know
you always have to juxtapose just about everything with what
expectations were, and these massive expectations for Texas this year,

(02:08:00):
they just had to show up, throw the ball in
the field. Arch Manning was gonna win the highestman. Texas
was gonna win the National Championship. They played that tough
game Week one against Ohio State, even though Peyton or
arch didn't look so good. The truth of the matter
is when you come just one player, two plays away
from reaching the National Title game each of the last

(02:08:22):
two seasons, you feel like you're really knocking on the door.
Something's wrong with Texas. I don't know. I don't know
what it is. Arch Manning has not lived up to
the hype. He did have a turnover free performance against
Oklahoma last week, completed seventy eight percent of his passes.

(02:08:42):
But this Heisman campaign was a fagezi. It never really
got off the ground. And the preseason long arms were
number one. They're anything but that. And this is a
really bad thing for a team. I'll tell you one
more thing that's really bad for a team that has designs.
They win in the National Championship, they're averaging fifth to
fifteenth most penalties game and you don't do that. You
don't make those kinds of mistakes. Kansas State they're kind

(02:09:06):
of headed in the right direction now, but they've been
a bit of a disappointment as well. Same with South Carolina.
Like the rest of the teams on the list, they
got a quarterback that just hasn't taken the step forward
he was expected to take. I had a lot of
people try to tell me that it was Lenora's Sellers
was the best quarterback in the SEC. Not you know,

(02:09:29):
not Arch Manning. I'm not gonna name all the quarterbacks.
You know where I'm going with that. He's only had
one hundred and seventeen rushing yards this season. He's been
sacked a ton. Now, I get it. The game Cocks
they have an offensive line that's been injury ravaged. They
can't really protect the quarterback, so they don't have a
lot of time to throw. One thing that's become a

(02:09:50):
tremendous mid season surprise. Give it up to EUCLA. I
remember the day when UCLA was the goods and then
you know the Terry Donahue, Ara, etc. Could I mean,
I've never understood why athletes would not just line up
to want to go there. And they had a ninety
eight Their football team in ninety eight, coach by Bob

(02:10:12):
Toledo should have gone to the National Championship game. They
had a little bit of a debacle when the coach
would't let him wear a certain jersey and they went
down to Miami and lost to Edgar and James. It
just hasn't been the same since. But three in a
row and looking good doing it, you know, they almost
helped They basically helped James Franklin signed the death warrant

(02:10:33):
there by. Not only did they beat Penn State, but
the way they beat Penn State. Then they get on
they get on a plane and go to Michigan State
and just toyed with Michigan State. And then they came
back and beat I think an above average Maryland team
on Saturday, and Maryland was a team that started four
and oh. But UCLA has gotten creative. They use fake punts,

(02:10:55):
they use onside kicks, they have defensive linemans blocking on offense.
They do what they take to do. Jerry new Heeisl,
who was buying larger backup quarterback at UCLA, the son
of Rick new Heisel, but he had the one big
game at Texas, one big game of Texas, And I
think it's just cool if both USC and UCLA could

(02:11:15):
be more relevant nationally in Los Angeles just like they
used to be. They're starting to gather attention, including from
people like mc cronin. Right, he's been praising the football team.
He says, you know, he says, things get lost in

(02:11:35):
the mix because all the money they're getting paid to
there's still kids. It's not easy to live through this
pressure cooker, et cetera. Et pretty pragmatic report, but again,
I don't know what crazier can go on this college
football season. It looks like Ohio State's still buttoned up.
But what happens when they go to Michigan on November
twenty ninth? People? You know that's lying in wait. So

(02:12:02):
even though we're halfway through, it's been an incredibly raucous,
crazy college football season. We're not done yet, and who
knows what the future brings, and I'm here for it.
I can't wait to see what the future brings. Well,
I know what the past has brung. And I got
to ask you, did Shohio Tani play perhaps the most

(02:12:23):
magnificent game of all time? He helped Seal, the Dodgers
and the National League pennant. But it wasn't that he
did it, it was the way he did it. Let's
revisit that ever so quickly. Coming up, I'm Bernie Frattle.

Speaking of reviews, I don't know if they're going to
be able to find a higher league for Shohey Otani,
but he continues to stretch the dimensions of what a

(02:13:44):
human being is capable of doing on a baseball field,
especially in such a high leverage situation. He was pitching
and leading off, Oh nothing, that right off the bat,
That right there, he's a head scratcher in the annals
of baseball. And he was on nothing, throwing a two
hitter against a team with the best record in the

(02:14:08):
entire league, National League, and American League. And then he
manages to lead off the game with a home run,
the first leadoff for him at as a pitcher in
the history of the major leagues. As he continued the
process of single handedly putting the team on his back
and putting the Dodgers in the World Series in the
position to defend its twenty four title and become the

(02:14:32):
first team in twenty five years to repeat. So the
first home run nothing, He turned on a cutter four
hundred and seventy feet to right center field, and the
next thing, you know, by the time it landed, actually
that was a third home run, that was four seventies
over the roof. People were so giddy they couldn't They

(02:14:55):
retired from clapping and cheering, and they just started laughing,
because this was you could easily argue, and you can't
say the World Baseball Classic was, and you can't say
maybe last year was because real Tani didn't pitch. Could
you argue that the other night it was the most

(02:15:18):
important game of Shohotani's career And what if you do?
He produces the most exhilarating performance, and there have been
some in baseball. Reggie Jackson at three home runs in
Game five of the nineteen seventy seven World Series to
clinch the World Series, but he did to offer three
different pitchers, and he did it three pitches, but he

(02:15:40):
didn't pitch. He didn't pitch. He also walked in his
fourth a bat, so three three home runs in a walk,
and did I mention that he also struck out ten hitters.
No one can say that they've ever seen anything like
this before, because we haven't. You know, everybody's into this

(02:16:05):
exit velocity stuff, and the numbers just start to become
a little mind bottling and confusing and frankly nonsensical. But
if you're into such things, not only did did Otani
hit three home runs, he had the three highest exit
velocities one hundred and seventeen miles an hour, one hundred

(02:16:26):
and sixteen miles an hour, and one hundred and fourteen
miles an hour, the three top distances four hundred and
seventy feet, four hundred and forty six feet, four hundred
and twenty seven feet, and oh, by the way, while
he was on the Mound eleven top pitch velocities ranging
from anywhere from nine to nine point two miles an
hour to just done one hundred and one miles an hour.
What the he? I mean, even even the natural Roy Hobbs,

(02:16:50):
who was supposed to be the greatest, didn't do this
that I could remember. But here's what's interesting. I people
ask me, how are you worried about Otani's slump? What? What?
Come on? Come on? You knew eventually this guy. And
by the way, while that conversation was taking place, the
Dodgers were already eight and one in the postseason. Now

(02:17:11):
they're ninety one. The week leading up to it, most
of the discussion was whether Otani could could do such
a thing. Okay, I believe Otani is deserving and should
win his third straight MVP in his fourth and five years,
But he only really started ramping up as a pitcher
okay throughout the throughout this season because he had his

(02:17:32):
second elbow construction, and on the days he pitched, the
numbers were decent, not great, but the Dodgers were determined
to make it work. When October rolls around, baseball becomes
quite a bit different. Strike zones shrink, power, pitching is rewarded,

(02:17:52):
umpires want hitters to get the bat off their hands,
and everything is intensified. Have that DNA now think they
won one last year? They always had the DNA, but
now that they won one last year, it's like they
were just biding their time. I never doubted that when
they got to October, and I said it more than
once on the air, wait till October baseball starts. But

(02:18:15):
what was interesting is the Dodgers made a decision to
push back his National League Championship Series start. He was
supposed to go Game two so he could have a
day off after to travel to Game four, and the
Dodgers insist that had nothing to do with the quality
of his bats, and I believe him. Okay, However, he

(02:18:36):
wasn't having necessarily great at bats. The concern was might
he have trouble compartmentalizing because It's one thing to do
this during the regular season, which hadn't done in a
couple of years. It's another thing to do when you're
trying to repeat his World champions So Game four rolls around,
and it seemed like there was less risk and it

(02:18:57):
was a situation on the Dodgers are up three to zero.
So if there's any uncertainty that Otani can do this
for the remainder of the playoffs, if we get to
the World Series where he can pitch and hit and
lead off and do it at the highest level on
the biggest, granted stage, Game four was going to be

(02:19:18):
a primer. It was going to be a referendum, all right,
But people forgot they were dealing with Shoe Otani. He's
not normal. I'm told that. The week league up to
that Game four, Otani himself was quite irritated. Okay, he
was tired of getting the same questions asked, and frankly,

(02:19:38):
he was not happy with his own results. What did
he do? He went to work. He went to work.
He channeled all of his if this guy is capable
of getting angry, I don't know, all of his anger,
all his frustration, and went to work and just prepared.
He spent multiple hours before the game getting into his

(02:20:01):
usual schedule working on his pitching warm up. Then he
headed to the batting cage an hour before the game,
and then he took time to watch the Mariners and
Blue Jays to study, and the hitting coach, Robert Vanskoyek, said,
I don't want to call this guy a robot, but
he's so routine oriented it's almost robotic. But the truth

(02:20:24):
of the matter is robots can't think and reason. Otani can't,
and all those doubts fueled his fire. They made him ready.
And the truth of the matter is Otani apparently told
some people that in Japanese, those who could understand him, says,
it's going to be my turn to perform and after

(02:20:49):
the celebration, right, and it's been ten months now since
the Dodger signed him to a ten year, seven hundred
million dollar contract, Otani had a smile on his face
and said, one down, nine more to go. I really
can't wait for the World serious to start next Friday.
I don't know who it's gonna be. I actually think

(02:21:09):
it's gonna be the Blue Jays. Could be wrong. I
had the Dodgers in blue Jays at the beginning of
the playoffs. The Blue Jays are down three to two,
but they're coming home. But either way you slice it,
the Dodgers are going to be heavy favorites. Yes, they
set a record three hundred and twenty nine million dollars
in payroll, and Otani's decision with some people took uppers

(02:21:31):
to to defer the costs. But when you look at
the six innings pitch, two hits, ten strikeouts, it was impressive.
But when you couple three home runs on top of that,
and he had to follow Blake Snell, who threw a
one hitter, ten strikeouts, no scoreless, scoreless, you know, I

(02:21:52):
think eight scoreless hittings allowed what one hit to hits. Here,
Schenoba Yamamoto pitched a three hit, one run complete game.
Those performances made in a very tough act to follow,
even for a guy like Shoeyotani. So for a guy
even like Otani to completely take over the game the

(02:22:14):
way he did on Friday leads you to believe that
just when you think you've seen it all, we're still
going to see something new. And I'm here for it.
But for one night, I don't know people may argue
about it, Shohetani may very well have played the most impactful,
magnificent game in the history of Major League Baseball. We've

(02:22:36):
covered all on the show. We've talked a ton of football.
We've talked to NBA, We've talked baseball, We've talked college football.
We also talk to the other football, futbol. We call
it soccer, they call it football. It's time for Christophet's
World of Soccer.

Speaker 3 (02:22:53):
The greatest goals finishes, the international drama. It's all here
in this report from the World of Soccer. Last day

(02:23:13):
of the regular season for MLS. Here uh the not
a lot of drama for the top of the league.
Philadelphia Union has not only already lifted the Supporters Shield
two weeks ago, which is the award for the regular
season and for having the most points in the regular season.
What a what a fascinating idea for North American sports.

(02:23:35):
I'm being a little bit facetious here, but I do
think with expanded playoffs, which the way we treat playoffs,
we should honor the regular season a little bit more
than we do. Obviously, in soccer, a lot of times
there are no playoffs.

Speaker 19 (02:23:48):
You win your domestic League MLS kind of stands in
a very interesting uh spot in that they have an
award for the regular season and the MLS Cup. But regardless,
Philadelphia Union lifts the supporters two weeks ago. They're also
locked up in the number one seed in the in
the MLS Cup playoffs that will be coming and if
my calculus is correct, even with a San Diego win,

(02:24:11):
the Vancouver white Caps have sewn up the number one
seed in the Western Conference. There'll be some drama with
the bottom of the table that has all been sorted out.
On Saturday next week we will get into the MLS
Cup preview to talk about what's been going on there
and where Lionel Messi shall be in all of this,

(02:24:33):
along with the great LAFC and Seattle Sounders, this, that
and the other thing. But we turn our attention now
a little bit towards Europe. First off, last time we
had talked about Harry Kane, the miraculous Englishman. He had
set a record to reach one hundred goals with a
club in a very short period of time, just over

(02:24:55):
I believe, one hundred matches. Now he has had one
hundred and four goals and one hundred and seven matches,
which is fairly insane even with Bayern Munich. Der Classicer
happened here on Saturday, that is, between Bayern Munich and
Borisia Dortmund.

Speaker 3 (02:25:11):
Harry Kane scored his four hundredth club goal of.

Speaker 19 (02:25:14):
His entire career in there as Bayern Munich defeats Dortmund
to one. However, where we turn our attention now is
to changing chairs very quickly if you have not been
keeping up with the saga of Nottingham Forest, a club
that I really celebrated when they came up from the

(02:25:39):
depths of the English league system to the Premier League.

Speaker 2 (02:25:45):
This has been a club of the eighties.

Speaker 19 (02:25:46):
It was a fantastic club in Europe, one of the
founding members of the Premier League, and have been on
really tough times. They are now on their third manager,
or will be on their third manager once they figure
out who the next one is. In just this eason alone,
and because minutes minutes after really minutes like nineteen minutes

(02:26:09):
after or so a three nil victory at home to
Chelsea when final the owner sacked Angi Potiskaglu, who had
been with the club for eight matches and had not
won a single one of them thirty nine days. That
is how long Engine potus Koglu had at Nottingham Forest

(02:26:29):
before being sacked. Five Premier League losses, no wins across
eight competitions, and again he is the second one.

Speaker 1 (02:26:37):
Already.

Speaker 19 (02:26:38):
Their first manager they entered the year with was Nunio
Spirrita Santo, who was appointed the head coach of west
Ham United on a three year contract after I believe
like having an eight year contract not long ago with
the Nottingham Forest. The all these manager and coach contracts
are basically written on napkins in and torn up just

(02:27:02):
randomly on the drop of the hat. There are so
many managers you can go through and look at how
many lasted less than one hundred days, less than one
hundred days.

Speaker 2 (02:27:12):
And here's the crazy part.

Speaker 19 (02:27:13):
This isn't even like the least amount of days I've
seen a manager get in the last five years. That
would be to Leeds United Sam Allardies, who watched his
club kind of fall into the relegation zone under his
under his supervision vision thirty days. He only got thirty

(02:27:34):
days on the job a month, ay calendar month.

Speaker 2 (02:27:37):
It's insane.

Speaker 19 (02:27:39):
It's insane, and it's because they're usually the easiest guys
to get rid of. Obviously you're not happy with the players,
you fire the coach, but that axiom is never more true.
But in the world of soccer, where you can change
these guys out at the drop of the hat, and
yet there are still guys who are going to line
up and an I for the Nottingham for job because

(02:28:01):
it is still a pretty good job.

Speaker 3 (02:28:04):
Sean diish.

Speaker 19 (02:28:06):
Disch has been managing at Everton and had some careers
before then, including a ten year stint with Burnley. Everton,
of course no longer in the Premier League. Mansini a
form Manchester City manager. Both would be very look Nottingham
Forrest is down in the relegation zone right now, thirty
matches to play, understood, but they're also playing in the

(02:28:28):
Europa League. This is a club with a lot of pride,
This is a club with a lot of hope and
history for them and they need to get off the
mat pretty quickly. Finally, Bernie, it would be remiss if
we ended world of Soccer without mentioning the absolute return
of Earling Holland, who was a bit on a cold
streak during that international break we had while you were

(02:28:50):
away Holland crushed Israel. Norway put up a tremendous ass
whooping on Israel, Holland scoring a hatch and back, of
course now with eleven goals for Manchester City as they
slide into second place on the Premier League table, just
behind Arsenal as Liverpool bounces a step Still early again,

(02:29:13):
there's still thirty match days still to go, but man
City could really use his goal scoring prowess to come
back and in full roar, if they hope to hold
off both Arsenal and Liverpool and get back to their
winning ways, we'll see you next time on the World
of Soccer.

Speaker 2 (02:29:31):
So Earling Holland is an individual I'd never heard of
until we broke this segment out a couple of years ago,
and now he's well, let's just put it this way.
Earling Holland is to soccer what Wayne Gretzky was to hockey.
He's an instant goal scorer. So you hear names like
that dropped and then when games are played perhaps they

(02:29:53):
take on a little bit different significance right around the
corner from a World Cup, which is what got this
thing started back in twenty twenty two. The fall of
twenty twenty two the soccer segment. So I'm sure there'll
be lots of news, lots of updates, and lots of
storylines to accompany that is World Cup Soccer comes to

(02:30:17):
North America. It's just around the corner coming up. We
wrap up the show, and this past week was the
anniversary of I think the most infamous, famous, certainly the
most noteworthy talked about trade in all the sports. And
it's appropriate to bring up because the Football NFL trade

(02:30:40):
deadline is two weeks from Thursday, tw weeks from Tuesday,
number fourth, two weeks from Tuesday, four o'clock Eastern time.
I can assure you there will be nothing that will
compare come close to comparing to the trade that took place,
which I'll remind you of and give you some details
you may have Forgottenernie, Freddeck were company live from the

(02:31:01):
Las Vegas Fox Sports Radio studios here in Las Vegas.
Keep it locked you listen to Bernie Fraddle Show on
Fox Sports Radio. All right, wrapping it up on the
Bernie Frattle Show, I want to thank my producers Mark
and Brienna appreciate all the efforts before I dive into
this crazy trade you know, it's funny. The Detroit Lions

(02:31:23):
were the darlings the last couple of years and then
no one's really talking about him this year. And I
just want to say this about that before the season start.
I do this every year with Jason McIntyre. I go
in a straight fire podcast and we talk about some
progmastifications for the season. I predicted the Lions would go
to the Super Bowl, and I'm not backing off that.

(02:31:46):
They've been a model consistency since it started twenty twenty three.
Listen to this. Since twenty twenty three, who's got the
best winning percentage in the entire National Football League? Seven
to ninety five the Lions point inferentials. The Lions ranked
first DAI, averaging thirty one points a game that ranks first,
three hundred and ninety eight yards per game that ranks first,

(02:32:08):
pats touchdowns eighty two that ranks first, running touchdowns sixty
four that ranks first, and the opponent's rushing yards per
game will be ninety three per game. Save for complete
mass unit injuries last year from Thanksgiving on and they
may have gone last year, we'll never know, but they're
not done this year. And I would not go to

(02:32:30):
sleep on the Detroit Lions, not in a million years.
And I think they will take care of business Monday
night against a very good Tampa Bay Buccaneer team, a
very well coached Tampa Bay Buccaneer team, and of course
they're rocketship quarterback Baker Mayfield. All Right, So last Sunday,

(02:32:51):
a tremendous sort of maybe tremendous isn't the right word,
but a very noteworthy historic date in the NFL came
and went, an anniversary as it were. It was the
thirty sixth anniversary of October twelfth, nineteen eighty nine, in

(02:33:12):
which the Dallas Cowboys traded herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings.
And people will never stop talking about that. That was
actually a three team deal, but a total eighteen players
and draft picks, and you can trace one how the
Cowboys managed to gravitate from a one to fifteen team

(02:33:36):
to a team that actually won three Wing three rings
in the next four seasons. Now, had Jimmy Johnson and
Jerry Jones not had their separation, I think they would
have won five Super Bowls in a decade of the nineties.
But it's speculation, but it's I think a lot of

(02:34:01):
folks feel that had that team stayed together and you
know what I mean, but it didn't. But regardless, when
the Cowboys traded herschel Walker to Minnesota, well, Dallas also
traded their third round choice in nineteen ninety, its tenth
round choice in nineteen ninety, and its third round choice
in nineteen ninety one old Minnesota. Okay. So, Meanwhile, Minnesota

(02:34:22):
traded linebacker Jesse Salomon, linebacker David Howard, quarterback Isaiah Colt,
and defensive end Alex Stewart to Dallas with three draft picks.
Dallas didn't cut all four players, which shocked Minnesota and
triggered conditional picks, which ultimately led to eight picks. This
was just highway robbery. They weren't just any eight picks.

(02:34:47):
It was a first round pick in nineteen ninety, a
second round pick in nineteen ninety, a sixth round pick
in nineteen ninety, a first round pick, a second round
pick in nineteen ninety one, a first round pick, a
second round pick, and a third round in nineteen ninety two.
Minnesota also traded running back Darren Nelson to Dallas. Wherever
you remember Darren Nelson was a star at Stanford I

(02:35:09):
don't know, okay, career in the NFL, who then immediately
traded Darren Nelson to San Francisco for the Charger's fifth
round choice in nineteen ninety, which Dallas then sent to Minnesota.
Without that trade, the Cowboys would not have eventually acquired
Emmitt Smith, Russell Maryland, and Darren Woodson. As for hershel Walker,

(02:35:32):
he actually played eight more seasons and ironically ended up
playing his last two years with the Cowboys, which I'm
sure people forget as a backup thirty two games, managed
a total of one hundred and two yards and one touchdown. Now,
what's funny is when you go back Initially everybody thought

(02:35:52):
it was a horrible deal for Dallas, but not Jimmy Johnson.
Jimmy Johnson bragged about the deal, call it quote the
grain check that the Great Train Robbery, which it was
an ESPN agreed because many years later they did one
of their thirty for thirty features and it was called

(02:36:14):
the Great Train Robbery. Herschel Walker turned into multiple Super
Bowl Championships, Hall of Famers, and winning seasons for the
Dallas Cowboys, and they would dearly love to have those
days back. Well, we are in a full calendar. And
by the way, I know you know this, we talked
about it earlier. The start of the twenty five to

(02:36:35):
twenty six NBA season is beginning Tuesday. There are two games,
including Golden State at Los Angeles, without Lebron. This also
starts the NBA's new eleven year, seventy seven billion dollar
media rights deal with their new media partners NBC and Amazon,
and a bunch of games across all kinds of platforms.

(02:36:56):
The NBA first ever exclusively stream games on Pete Cockran.
Amazon joined the party, and the NFL's doing it. There
off doing it. But the start of the season's gonna
look a little bit different because, for the first time
in twenty three years, Lebron James will not be available
to play an opening night. They say it's going to
be out three or four weeks due to the satica nerve.

(02:37:18):
I think it's gonna be longer. He's been nursing it
since July. I don't think you're going to see Lebron
until December. I'm not predicting it. I'm not wishing it
on him. I'm just giving an opinion. I'm paid to
have opinions. I think Lebron's gonna miss games into December.
This is healing slowly, very slowly. And here's the interesting
thing I know. I back on Lebron a lot. He's

(02:37:39):
still one of the league's most popular players that showed
up in the ratings last season when viewership numbers were
a hot topic after a slow start. But with James
to sit out the air, we'll see if the new
broadcast partners start to feel the hit. Because the Lakers
are scheduled for the second game of Opening Night Tuesday night,
the first on NBA and NBC since the twenty oh

(02:37:59):
two NBA Finals, which coincidentally, ironically a year before Lebron
James was even drafted. So the double header is also
going to Aaron Peacock, which would be the first regular
season NBA game on their streaming network. Los Angeles will
have thirty four national games this year, and they're scheduled
to play eight national games between now and the end

(02:38:20):
of November, not including the games an NBA TV. They'll
play the Warriors, the Tea Wolves twice, the Grizzlies, the Spurs,
the thunder the Clippers, and the Mavericks, all without Lebron.
In my opinion, unless Lebron is back, say November twenty
eighth or twenty fifth, I think he's gonna miss time,
more time than they want him to miss. But that's

(02:38:42):
not necessarily a bad thing. He needs to heal. He's
been dealing with the satica nerve since July. He doesn't
heal as fast as he used to, and you don't
want a reoccurring thing. Lebron played seventy games last season.
He said his goal was to play all Lady two.
Well that's not gonna happen this year, but it'll be
a preview for the Lakers and the league of what
life will be like after Lebron. I do believe this

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there. Join host Johnny Knoxville as he unspools a wild and woolly tale about a group of regular ‘ol folks who risked it all for a chance at a better life. CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist answers the question: what would you do with 17.3 million dollars? The answer includes diamond rings, mansions, velvet Elvis paintings, plus a run for the border, murder-for-hire-plots, and FBI busts.
