Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Well, there's a couple
of ways we could look at this. We could try
and just ignore all the signals and the warnings and
the red flags that are out there and just continue on.
Or we can address it and come up with a solution.
We will figure that out coming up here in just
a couple of moments. That guy right there is Bucky Brooks.
I'm Jonas Knox. This is is Fox Sports Radio. You can
(00:24):
check out the show on the I Heart Radio app
and on every single one of our Fox Sports Radio affiliates.

rate quote. Ladies and gentlemen, Uh, this man really needs
no introduction, but this man demands an introduction. In a
world in which nobody can get along with their ex.
This man's ex, the Jacksonville Jaguars, have brought him on
to be their analyst, to brought him on to break
(01:07):
down the football team moving forward, you see his stuff
on NFL dot Com, you hear him on Fox Sports Radio,
you see him on Fox Sports One. He is the
reason John always stopped what he was doing running a
football organization to shout out the job well done by
(01:27):
Bucky Brooks at his alma mater, Granada Hills. Ladies and gentlemen,
step aside. Watch where you're at, watch your back, watch
your mouth, and watch your front. It's the man, Bucky.
(02:05):
I like I like that. I like the touch of
the sixty minutes where I was saying, I'm doing a
little clock, a little tick tick tick. I kind of
like that. I'm just seeing how far you can go
with that. I like that. That was that was That
was nice. That was a nice little intro. You know
when you do uh, when you sing. Previously they you
learned how to hold your breath, and so you learn
(02:27):
to sing from your diaphragm. That's why have you ever noticed,
like opera singers always have these big bellies. It's not
so much that they're fat, it's because they're diaphragm there. No,
it's that's what I'm That's what I'm gonna start using
when my belly flops over my I'm a singer. That
that's not that's not a good that's my diaphragm. Okay,
(02:47):
but here's the move. All right, here's the move. Just
say I'm a singer. Yeah right, no, seriously, like my
voice is so powerful, I'm on Fox Sports Radio. And
then when then, when you can prove it, you don't
need to show him anything else. You can just say,
I don't know. That's that's for the second day. We'll
do that on the second day. It I'll serenade you
on the second day. But Bucky Brooks, Um, what's happening.
(03:11):
It's a Saturday. You know it is a Saturday. Have
we have all kinds of football things going on. We
have the NFL kind of rounding in the forum. Guys.
Next week we'll kind of get to it. Uh, some
real training camp stuff will take place. We got college
football just up at arms trying to figure out who's playing,
who's not playing. Uh, those who are optimistic are seeing
(03:33):
conference only schedules and those things that we get excited
about that. But then we're also having these conferences that
are saying, yeah, we're gonna have to wait till the spring.
So a lot of stuff going on and that's not
even talking about the bubble that exists in the NBA
and what we're seeing from baseball. Yeah, so we have
to get to uh, I guess it would be the
doom and gloom side of things. The MAC. The MAC
(03:55):
the the weekday delight. There's nothing quite like watching a
Bowling Green or Ohio game on a Tuesday night. There's
there really is nothing like it. So yeah, we were
so we have we have the MAC Conference, the first
conference to make a bold move as far as some
of the bigger conferences when they when it goes to
college football. The MAC decided to make their announcement and
(04:19):
this was earlier today, their announcement moving forward and announcing
that by a unanimous vote of the Mid American Conferences
Council of Presidents meeting earlier today, as a result of
the COVID nineteen pandemic across the United States and around
the world and its effect on student athletes, the conference
(04:40):
will postpone the fall seasons in the sports of men's
and women's cross country, field, hockey, football, men's and women's soccer,
and women's volleyball. It is the intention of the membership
to provide competitive opportunities for the student athletes and these
sports during the springs Master of two thousand one, so
(05:03):
that was earlier today. A MATT commissioner John Steinbrecker announcing
the news no football this fall for the MAC. Bucky
Brooks bummer man, Yeah, yeah, it is. It is a bummer.
It is a bummer that. Um, a lot of these
guys want to have an opportunity to play in the fall. However, um,
there's still some conversation that maybe they'll be able to
(05:24):
get it done in the spring, and I think we
just kind of have to hold out hope that that
is what takes place, because I would hate to see
what happened, like what happened to a lot of athletes
in the spring, a lot of baseball players, a lot
of other sports didn't get a chance to finish their
final seasons. I would hate to see seniors in the
MAC and some of these other conferences not have an
(05:45):
opportunity to play their final year. And so this is uh.
Following that news that was made by the MAC that
they will not be playing football. Brett McMurphy of Stadium,
he sent out a tweet with the following quote of
a Power five source college football season is done. I
don't think everyone immediately follows MAC, but it gives other
(06:06):
league presidents one more reason to make an easier decision.
Biggest thing is unknown long term impact of COVID and
liability issues involved. Right, So, um, they want to know
what the long term impact of COVID is. Um, didn't
COVID just get here in like February. How the hell
do we know what the long term impacts are? No?
But it sounds nice. It sounds nice to say that,
(06:27):
because then when you say that, UM, you can go
spend and say, look, we're really doing this for the
student athletes. We want to make sure that we're protecting them.
And you still can operate under the model that d
n C double A has already has always operated under.
With the student athlete amateurism at heart. When you put
them first, that is what you're able to kind of
(06:47):
follow behind. If we talk about the money and how
much money and the economic repercussions of not being able
to play, then it goes away from amateurism to an
employer employee relationship, which is why the language into semantics
are very very important right now when they make these decisions.
So you're not buying that as being there their sole
reason as to why they're I mean, some of it is.
(07:09):
But you heard what he talked about the long term liabilities,
Like they want to protect themselves long term because what
if you play and in twenty years later you develop
something that can be pointed back to your participation during
the pandemic. Now, schools could be responsible. There should be
a level of vulnerability when it comes to them exposing
(07:29):
you to the virus. And so everyone is trying to
talk and use the proper legal lease to protect themselves.
But look, it's a serious situation. Yeah, no, I get it.
I just and and I feel like remember the movie Titanic.
Do you ever see that movie Titanic? I did, Okay,
I did, well, you don't you know, I knew what
was happening. I was right. And you know, by the way,
(07:50):
there's a great conspiracy theory on the movie Titanic, or
on on Titanic in general. A one of the conspiracy
theories is is that it's the wrong boat. The boat
the they sent out because they were in a rush
was actually a boat that was faulty. And you can
actually if you go and dig up, it's got the
wrong numbered plate on the side of the boat. So
actually the real Titanic never sank. It was in a
(08:13):
replica of It was a replica of Titanic that they
sent out. I say, it's a real thing, and if
you actually do the do the research, if you actually
do the research, it makes a lot of sense. But
never mind all that. All right, that was just an
excuse to hear the unsolved histories theme. All right, never
mind all that. So here we are. Now we're talking
about and more and more people are coming out talking about,
all right, well that's bad news. I think it's the
(08:35):
Big Ten that's going to be meeting today. They're gonna
be discussing all options around the table. Doesn't mean they're
necessarily going to cancel the season today, but it is
a real conversation to have. And I feel like, and
I don't know if you want to join me, but
I'm willing to go here. I feel like I'm the
band on the Titanic. I'm seeing it all go down.
I know everybody's I know everybody's and you know what,
(08:57):
I refuse. I'm going to continue to play. We are
going to have We're we're having college football this season.
We're having the Power five and anybody that wants in
and wants to be a part of my band on
the Titanic. As everything goes down around you, you come
be a part of it. We're having college football this season.
I think we are gonna have some college football because
I do believe their infection of conferences UM that want
to get it done and they're gonna try and play
(09:18):
around whatever issues may pop up. I mean, we've seen
the SEC reconfigurator schedules, We've seen the a SEC redo
their schedule. Uh, the Big Ten is still talking about
like they've gone conference only, but they just haven't formally
come out to Big twelve. And so I think there's
enough momentum for for those conferences to try and find
(09:39):
a way to get it done. Now. I don't know
if we're gonna see fans and and those things, but
I absolutely believe that they're going to be some conferences
that attempt to make this happen. And so we're just
gonna have to see how it plays out. But I
don't think we will see a fall without college football. Yeah,
And I just and I keep and I'm trying to
keep my faith. And I was feeling more and more
(09:59):
comf and especially when the the SEC comes out with
their schedule, which, by the way, if you're a Missouri fan,
I mean I mean get better, okay, get better. I
mean that's what would see me, of course. And I'm like,
whoa with me? Like, what are we gonna do? He
get better? The SEC an ounces, all right, we're gonna
(10:20):
add two more games on your on on the normal
eight that you play in conference, and we're gonna just
divvy out two more games to each team. And Missouri
goes and they're like Rudy when he looks on the
wall to see if he made the team, and and
Missouri goes up and they look at the wall, they realize, oh,
Alabama and l s U. All right, there's two losses.
So if you were a Missouri fan and you had
any sort of illusions about maybe making a run for
(10:43):
a national title, go ahead and put those aside, empty
stadium or not. I just let me ask you. You
played Division one football, you played in North Carolina. Um,
you're you're now a coach and a successful one at
the high school level. What would you need to see
in order to feel both as a player and as
a coach for there to be a college football season man.
(11:07):
Outside of testing UM and having those protocols in place, UM,
I think you have to have like a level a
set of guidelines that as a parent, that you would
feel good about your kids being exposed to whatever they're
exposed to, meaning that when you go to practice, you
see social distancing, you see coaches and mass you've been
(11:27):
well aware of the temperature checks and the testing that
goes on UM, they can give you a sound plan
for how they're going to deal away from the facility
when they're in the dorm rooms, when they're on campus.
What is the plan like to protect them from contracting it?
Maybe from other students? UM. I think for me everything
would be about information and organization. Obviously with the science
(11:48):
involved in it, that's what I would need to see
and hear to feel good about the season taking place.
And so if I could get some reasonable assurances in
those areas, yeah, I'm fine with that's playing football. Yeah,
I just I really would. And you'll never know this
because the you know that there's I guess they call
it the silent majority who aren't on social media. I
(12:10):
just wonder how many players are are really okay with
the idea of not playing college football. I would love
to know, because I think it's a really really small amount.
Uh yeah, I think I think they're a small amount.
I think like, here's what happens. What we don't know,
And that's why I try and stick away from the generalizations.
You don't know what what affects everybody in their household,
(12:31):
like mom, dad's sister, their own um illnesses and and
things for my health. Concerned that you want to protect
those that you're close to from. But then you also
have a small handful of players who look their whole
intention and goal of playing college football was to get
them to the next level. And we're seeing that a
handful of them have started to say, you know what,
(12:52):
I'm good, Um, if I sit out this season, I
am now eligible for the draft, So I'm gonna go
ahead and get the jump start on training. I'm not
going to worry about putting myself at risk for injury,
declining play and the pandemic. And that's what we're seeing.
We've seen more and more guys Michael Parsons, Caleb Fairley,
ran Dale Moore. We've seen a number of these players
(13:12):
act like opt out, and so we're gonna see this.
We will see a wave of players that elect to
opt out. And some of those players are gonna be
guys that shouldn't do it from a draft standpoint, if
they're believing that this is a situation where they are
locks to be first round picks. But we will see
more and more players do this because there is a
level of uncertainty and when you do push the season
(13:33):
to the spring, you wonder how is that going to
impact your draft status? And I say that having spoken
to general managers who say, really, won't have any impact,
because we just have to evaluate you off of what
we have, which is to taped from nineteen and eighteen.
He's Fucky Brooks and Jonas Knocks is his Fox Sports Radio.
You can check out the show on the I Heart
Radio app. All right, coming up next, we're going to
(13:55):
get to the bottom of it. One of the most
connected college football report orders and writers in the country
is going to tell you the likelihood of a college
football season in the fall. Don't go anywhere. That's yours
next year on fs ARE. He's Bucky Brooks, I'm Jonas Knox.
This is Fox Sports Radio. You can check out the
(14:16):
show on the I Heart Radio app coming up here
in a little over ten minutes from now here on
fs ARE. We've got some trash talk out of the bubble,
trash talk in the NBA. We'll have that for you
here coming up a little over ten minutes from now
on Fox Sports Radio. Right now. He is kind enough
to join us here on fs ARE. He's one of
(14:37):
the most connected at college football writers and reporters in
the country. He is the great Bruce Feldman with us
here on Fox Sports Radio. You see his stuff on
the Athletic, you see him on Fox as well. Always
does a great job New York Times best selling author.
I mean, we're running out of space to give you
all these credentials, Bruce. I don't know if we have
the shelf space for all this. I appreciate that very much. Guys,
(15:01):
good to talk to you today. Good talking to you um.
On what appears to be maybe a little bit of
a dark day in college football. We obviously know the
news about the mac canceling their football season. Reports are
now suggesting that the Power five is going to follow suit,
and college football as a whole is in jeopardy when
it comes to playing in the fall. As I mentioned,
(15:22):
yours connected as anybody. What are you hearing about the
likelihood of a college football season coming up next month? Well,
there's definitely concern. Um, I don't know that any decision
at this point on the Power five level has been made.
I don't think that the SEC, the Big Twelve, UM,
the A C C. You know, right now, I don't
(15:43):
think those leagues are saying, Okay, the mackets shut down,
so we're going to follow suit. I think there are
serious conversations. From what I've heard in the Big ten.
I don't know that any decision on that front has
been made. And keep in mind, these are decisions made
by the college presidents based on the advice of athletic directors.
But I think there is there is serious concern. I mean,
(16:04):
you know, I think right now, Um, the people I
had talked to you earlier in the day and the
Power of five, it felt like, Okay, we're gonna see
how this week plays out. And I think, you know,
given all the signs that we've seen, this is different
than the NBA. This is different from the NHL where
they're in a bubble, right. It's even different from MLB
(16:24):
where you've seen some struggles. But they're still pressing forward
MLB as much smaller rosters. It's a sport where you
can socially distance more than you certainly can in football.
And they're not professional athletes, right I mean, right now,
I think there's there's real concern about what happens when
the regular students come back on campus and how how
much can you manage that because a lot of schools
(16:46):
felt like they're doing a pretty good job with this
when they're when the players are in the building. It's
what happens when they leave, you know, Bruce, And in
thinking about that, your your piece was excellent. Everyone should
read it for sure. On the Athletic, Um, what you
outline a scenario where you have like these these lower
level UH football programs that are really frustrated with the
(17:08):
lack of action from the n C double A. Can
you expand a little bit on that. What were some
of the frustrations that you you gather from these coaches
when you had a chance to talk to them. Yeah,
I appreciate that, Bucky so Um. The story I mentioned
on the Athletic is really I thought it was the
first time we had a football coach really put his
name on something and the coach was Jeff Choked. It
(17:28):
spent most of his career he was a Chris Peter
some assistant at Boise State in Washington, and he coached
it at Florida and a few other places. But now
the last few years he's at Montana State. It's a
really good FCS program that were number four in the country,
and we had traded some messages and we spoke on
the phone on on Thursday and he was about to
have to tell his team they're shutting that down. We
(17:50):
have not heard really anything from the m t A,
and basically now on the eve of the first day
training camp, they're telling us you can't afford financially to
basically play college football because of some of the things
that they are saying you have to now do to
make it work. And one of the things that Choke
(18:11):
really talked about was it was like the dereliction of
duty from Mark Emert, the head of the n c
A and the n c A and the I think
it was went from anger to frustration to sadness. And
one of the things that he really hit home was
he said, you know, you're hearing a lot of stuff
now online from Pactwall players and Mountain West players, and
(18:33):
the kids are really the ones speaking up and the
ones who are trying to take on a leadership role
where everybody else has kicked the can down the road.
And this should never have happened this way. Um. And
so the story went up around around dinner time yesterday,
and I can't tell you how many d m s
and texts I got from fellow football coaches who were
(18:54):
echoing what Jeff Chokes said. And I think, again, this
guy is fifty years old. I think he probably long
and hard about do I want to put myself out
there because a lot of the conversations that I've had
with A d s, but certainly coaches. Let's not say
that all the coaches and all the A d s
are saying, I hope they canceled football. I don't think
we can play. I mean there's a few that say that.
(19:15):
I don't think it's I don't think it's certainly not
all um, And I think it varies on when you
talk to them. But I think the frustration was, Hey,
we're in physician as coaches of leadership. We're trying to
tell parents, we're getting questions of them, We're getting questions
of everybody around us, and we're getting no directions. We've
gotten no directions, and that, you know the sentiment, and that,
(19:37):
I think in great detail was what he really voiced
in our story on the Athletic yesterday. He's Bruce Feldman,
college Football Insider, college football reporter for Fox Sports and
also the Athletic, joining us here on Fox Sports Radio.
Jonas knocks Bucky Brooks with you here on fs ARE
and it is a great article that Bruce, that you
have up and you can go to Bruce Bruce's Twitter
account if you want to find that. It's at Bruce
(20:00):
Eldman CFB on the Athletic. And my takeaway from it
is that it feels like the way that this was
painted out by Jeff cho In talking about his issues
with what is happening, is that almost like, look, it's
it's not the n c a A instructing the power five.
It was the power five drive in the n c
AS car the whole time and ignoring all the other
(20:22):
things on the outside and on their periphery. And because
of that, that's why we find ourselves in this situation. Yeah,
that's spot on. I think they felt like they got
boxed into a corner, and it's basically the end the
top of the food change is said. You know what, sorry,
you know, this is the way it's got to be.
It's all about our survival and it's all about our
(20:44):
bottom line. I think, you know, there's a handful of
coaches I've heard from who are on the lower divisions
than an FCS who also feel like, hey, you know what,
you guys can't play football, you can't afford it, but
we don't mind. We'll take some of your best players
because they know they that's the only chance they may
have to play. And who knows, two weeks from now,
there there may not be any of these guys playing.
(21:05):
We don't know. But I think it was just things
that have clearly reached a boiling point within the college
athletics structure right now. And I think that we're going
to be seeing the fallout of this for a while,
you know, Bruce, and in thinking about that fallout, because
that's what I wonder, when when things, if things ever
returned back to normal. And let's say, in with the
(21:27):
way that the Power five schools just kind of bull
guarded and strong on all these lower conferences in lower
level schools. How do they men and repair their relationship
because there still has to be a level of codependency
when it comes to the Power five and others. Yeah,
I don't know how that process is going to happen, Bucky,
because there is I find it hard to believe. It's like,
(21:50):
you know, whenever things slowed down from the pandemic, whether
it's we get a vaccine or whatever, it's going to be. Um.
You know, everybody loves football and they love college foot
all and there it's still a big money maker, and
there's all these issues that are crammed into the pipeline
n I L and all sorts of stuff. This is
a this is another subplot to it. And you and
(22:11):
I had talked with with with Daniel Jeremiah probably a
month ago about you know, is there a workable structure
that maybe whether it's whether it's Group of five and
or fcs or maybe it's just SCS that ends up saying, hey,
we're gonna we're gonna shift to the spring. I think
there's a lot of pushback on both of those things
for a handful of reasons. But there's got to be
(22:34):
more dialogue right now because everything that's come out of this,
and it's still coming out. Like I've heard from from
people in in FCS and Group of five Football who
you know, they're part of the Football Coaches Association. There's
a lot of people who feel like they have, you know,
the same mission as why they got into coaching, but
(22:55):
there is a big disconnect within the sport. And you know,
they would say, I don't think this is this is untenable,
and maybe they're right, but I do think there's got
to be ways that can sort some of this out
because there's you know, at the end of this, there's
a lot of player issues that are coming out also,
but I think there's a lot of stuff that is salvageable.
(23:16):
It's just they need to they need to find a
way to to work together and because I think the
reality is I think they have more in common than
they don't, but right now it's just been a money grab.
He's Bruce Velman, college football insider and reporter for Fox Sports,
also for The Athletic Bruce last one for me, what
(23:36):
happens now, what's the next step for college football as
to whether or not we're going to see a season
in the fall. You know, I hope Jonas that that
we can't have a season, and I hope that that
you would hear from the people within the sport who
are really, let's say this the power of five commissioners,
because they're the ones with the access for information. You know,
(23:57):
whether you hear uh add story about an Indiana freshman
offensive lineman struggling with COVID, or you see positive numbers
about you know, Notre Dame or two Lane that or
Oklahoma had this many tests and almost nobody has tested positive.
But I think the conference commissioners are the ones who
know not only all the numbers because we're only here
(24:19):
in a fraction of the numbers of the schools, but
they also know the severity if there's a severity with
the players who have tested positive or the staffers who
tested positive, And so if those numbers don't, you know,
can be more much more manageable. I have my guess
is then you would hear maybe not here, but I
think they would advise their players, hey, don't go on
(24:41):
campus if you don't have to take all your classes online.
Let's try to manage this as if as as mote
as much as we can try to make this bubble
like let's try to do that. Let's try to have
some semblance of a season, because if there's any way
they can do it, I still think they're going to
at least at some level of the food chain, they're
going to try to do that. So let's just, you know,
hope that they can find a way to make it
(25:03):
work for the fall. He is Bruce Feldman. If you
missed any of the interview, you can check out the
podcast later in the meantime, go to The Athletic. He's
got a really really great piece up talking about sort
of some of the people beneath that don't may necessarily
get the headlines that have concerns and we're maybe wronged
in this whole trip down all the way through the
(25:26):
summer and now on the doorstep of a college football
season that is in jeopardy. Great stuff, Bruce at Bruce
Feldman CFB on Twitter. He writes for The Athletic and
also for a reporter for Fox Sports as well. Bruce,
awesome stuff. We always appreciate a man. My pleasure. Thank you, guys.
Jonas knocks Bucky Brooks here on Fox Sports Radio from
the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios. I want to let
(25:49):
you know. We are brought to you by Granger for

Call or visit Granger dot com. Up next, we've got
some trash talk in the world of sports in the NBA,
(26:10):
some juicy stuff. That's yours here on Fox Sports Radio.
But for all the latest from around the world of sports,
ladies and gentlemen. The cash man, David Gascon. But who
don't like? What's up? Gas? What's up? Man? What's up
with your cryptic tweet this morning? What do you mean?
Just it's the truth. But any listen, social media is
(26:35):
either a weapon or a tool. Just whew. Do you
want to use it? Listen? I categorize your tweets usually
as fastball, sliderer, curve, this is a this is a
bit of a change up. Oh yeah, come out. That's
what I do. Man, I'm gonna throw a change it
up sometime. Trevor Hoffman, Dude, that's good. That's what I know.
I'm Trevor Hoffman. Hold the ball really far back in
the palm and that sounded weird, and then like yeah,
(26:58):
that sounded very creepy. Uh yeah, I just I think
people get sucked into social media and they become addicted
to I gotta be right. I gotta be right. I
have to be right, and and the whole time new
information is coming in on the side. No, no, no, no,
I gotta be It's like, man, what do you what
are you doing? Like either taking the information and stop
(27:20):
being so biased about it. That's my thoughts, and I agree.
I agree. Hey, how about this, even if you know
the Mac postponing football here in the fall, would you
be good if we just went with sec A, C C,
Big twelve and Packed twelve. How about that? So no
Big ten? You're saying, yeah, we can do that if
(27:42):
we just have If we just have a power five
in in and I'll read and I'll redesign the college
football playoff, the winner of each conference five teams get in. Um,
actually that what would you do with an independent though? Um? Well,
I think I think just for fairness, Hawaii's in automatic.
(28:05):
I just well, if we're being fair here, Look, you
can take my Mac from me, Bucky Brooks on a
Tuesday night. Don't take Hawaii at start time in California
on a Saturday night. You know, the reality is the
Big Ten only have his Ohio State. So wow, wow,
not after, not after Jim Harbaugh stirring the pot this week. Hey,
(28:29):
you don't like rats. He just pointed out, he pointed out,
you know, Ohio State's cutting corners. What do you want? Yeah,
we did. By the way, this was Ryan Day talking
with the media earlier this week. It's pretty good. Oh boy,
(28:55):
he's talking about several people in our business. Guys. At
the break, Utah leads Denver sixty three to forty nine.
Rudy Gobert fourteen points and six rebounds. Clippers beat the
Trailblazers one to one. Seventeen Kawhile Leonards didn't play in
this game. Lou Williams didn't play in this game. After
the ballgame, and here's Paul George, we still we should
(29:17):
win regardless who's in a game. We still have the
game plan to executed. So, you know, regardless who's hand.
I think you get the idea that was coming from
you know, the Orlando Airport hangar that was out there,
but that is that for one of those new UFOs
that they've admitted to finally, how about that? You want
(29:38):
to know how nuts is? They've admitted UFOs are real,
and we're like whatever, We're good with it. I mean,
good god, Man Smith, where you at um? National Hockey
League Vegas Golden Nights in the Colorado Avalanche tied at
one one? How about this? In Major League Baseball, there's
a couple of games going on right now, Judge and
standing each at Homer's for the Yankees. They live raise
(30:00):
seven or three, game one of a doubleheader. But but
in Pittsburgh, guys Derek Holland, who was a starting pitcher
for Pittsburgh today, he gave up four home runs on
the first eleven pitches of the game. I couldn't do that.
I couldn't do that, like something while to get warmed up? Man,
(30:24):
I mean, how what do you is? He is he
tipping pitches? This is like what you dervish deep want.
Oh don't you get? I think there's a limitation on
the number one pitches right Like? Maybe he didn't get
I mean, yeah, but if if you're if you're warm up,
is that bad? You're just missing on location? Are you
missing in the strike zone? That many times? He had
been tipping pitches, had to have been I don't know,
(30:46):
but they got fat in a hurry. Five nothing. Detroit
leads Pittsburgh that games on FS one, UH, Indians and
White Sox and MLB network trib leads six to nothing.
Frem Mill rays of the homer AI's lead the Astros
one to nothing. Sad to report the Houston six and
seven this year a game under five, Hunard, I know
you're excited about that. John. It's been a huge Cubs
honk and all I mean me, I just listen. I'm
(31:09):
your Penguins gotta limited for the Stanley Cup playoffs. Yeah
it's over. Yeah, why why don't we redo that whole
thing in Pittsburgh? It's a rap. Brady Quinn's Brady Quinn's
brother in law's Jack Johnson is a defenseman for the Penguins,
and uh and he doesn't Actually, I don't know if
you're not all right? This is what I'm just I'm
(31:30):
gonna come out with a scorching hot take to say
that Jack Johnson is happy the Penguins were eliminated because
now he can be in Brady's charity golf tournament on Monday.
That's gonna be my scorching on take on tomorrow's show.
I'm sure that'll piss somebody off, you think. But this
is the thing though, with these bubble environments and all this,
(31:51):
I kind of like, like this has been my big question.
How do we know who's good? Like, we don't know
who's thriving in these sorts of situations. The Penguin to
have one of the most talented teams in the NHL,
and they got wiped out by Montreal. I mean a
lot of that series wasn't close. And I'm just watching
some of these games in the NBA and I'm thinking,
are we sure the best teams that were the best
(32:13):
teams before the pandemic are still the best teams? See?
That was the question I was gonna ask you. It's
like if you, because you tend to look at some
of the NFL lines on occasion, what would you do though,
in games where you have no fans in attendance, because
oftentimes the home team gets two and a half to
three points. I think that's the biggest mystery. Like the
New Orleans Saints, they've always got a home field advantage.
(32:35):
What if there's not a lot of fans there I
also thought this, Like Bucky, we talked about, you know,
college football in the atmosphere and all that. I wonder
if home field advantage means more in college football then
it does in the NFL. So if you go to
Tuscaloosa and there's no fans in attendance, is it really
that daunting of a task. I know the team is stacked,
(32:57):
They're always stacked, but now you don't have to worry
about that atmosphere. When you go there, you're just it's
it's a game, and all the added benefits in the
stands are no longer there. That's why I'm fascinated to
see if we do have a college football season, what's
the truth behind home field advantage? Yeah, I think I
think it would be interest. It varies in certain places,
(33:17):
like playing in Death Valley. Let's use version of Death
Valley is certainly different than playing without fans and all
of that, because you don't get the rauckets nature. I
do wonder how it's gonna impact that. I think it
impact defense is more than anything, because defenses are typically
the the unit that benefits from the home crowd. Yeah,
because and how many times have we seen at a
(33:37):
false start in Seattle like they were known for that
to where you have a fault. Well, now, if you
don't have fans there, that's one less thing you have
to worry about. As an offensive lineman, you'll be able
to hear everything. So yeah, there's a lot to this
up and down the sport NHL, the NFL, college football,
the NBA, A lot of this stuff that's been impacted
very very strange year. Um Bucky Brooks Joda snocks here
(33:58):
on Fox Sports Radio from the guy, Fox Sports Radio
Studios where it's easy to say. Center more on corn
insurance with Geico, go to Geico Dot Comical eight seven Auto.
The only hard part figuring out which way is easier. Bucky,
are you a fan of trash talk in the NBA?
It alright, We have got maybe the biggest red ass
in the entire league who is now laid down the
(34:21):
law and told it like it was. We will have
We will have that for you next year. On Fox
Sports Radio. He's Bucky Brooks, I'm Jonas Knox. This is
Fox Sports Radio Company. You live from the Geico Fox
Sports Radio Studios. Coming up little over ten minutes from
now here on fs are we will get into some
NFL conversation here on Fox Sports Radio. The NFL is
(34:46):
going to happen, and the NFL got some good news yesterday.
So we will have that four year coming up a
little over ten minutes from now on Fox Sports Radio.
Is this this dumb song that they play at Blackhawks
games every time the Blockhops score a goal. It's uh,
pump it Up by Elvis Costello. Maybe it's another song,
but it's a lot of sports arenas because it's kind
(35:08):
of a sports song. Now, yeah, this is where they
show fans on the big screen and they're like the
little kids are dancing and all that. It's very annoying.
I've had enough of you. Very annoying, all right. Um.
By the way, lady, that was Iowa Sam. Iowa Sam
will have another Iowa minute coming up the next hour.
I get Fox Sports Race two minutes. It's gonna get
(35:30):
the whole hour, you know, Bucky, I say a minute,
you say two minutes. Why don't we split the difference
thirty seconds to four minutes? Um? I mean that's where
it ends up, all right. So the NBA is back. Um.
I have been really really impressed with just the quality
(35:52):
of play in the NBA bubble so far, the guys
are intense, they're good games. UM, just seeing the back
and forth, and you're seeing really really good players put
on really really good performances. And one of the teams
that has been sort of the surprise, although maybe they
shouldn't have been based on all the injuries they were
dealing with earlier in the season and now they're healthy,
(36:13):
is the Portland Trailblazers, who have been really good and
are trying to get into that playoff playing game in
the Western Conference. And if Portland gets there, Portland's a
problem for the Lakers, like they can say all the
none with that backcourt and Dame Lillard, Portland is a
problem for the Lakers. But earlier today Portland's lost to
the l A Clippers and UM late in the game,
(36:36):
Damian Lillard with under twenty seconds left and uh and
a really really tight game there with the Portland's Trailblazers
trailing by one, Dame Lillard went to the foul line
and he missed two free throws and that led to
openly cheering by guys like Patrick Beverley. There was some
(36:58):
mention of baby Marcus Moore seeing year Paul George was
mixed in, and so Dame Lillard while wearing a mask
in his postgame press conference, while wearing a mask, which,
by the way, if they're testing, why is he wearing
a mask? If he's negative, why wearing masks? What are
we doing? I think? I think for appearances. Okay, I'm
glad you said it, Thank you, coach. We appreciate it.
(37:19):
That would have helped a couple of minutes ago. But
you were nowhere to be pressed. Okay, well we just
addressed it. You had nothing to do with it. But
Damian Lillard wearing a mask talking with reporters afterwards, discussed
the open cheering by members of the Clippers, asking me
about Page Beverley, I sent him home before at the
end of the game. Paul George has got sent home
(37:40):
by me last year in the playoffs. So they know
that the reason they reacted like that is because of
what they expect from you, which is a sign of respect.
And it just shows what I've done at a high
clip more times than not. So I'm not amended by
any day. I should just tell you probably how much
it hurt them to go do what I'm clicking to
do in those situations previously. That is the NBA's resident
(38:01):
red ass. Dame Lillard's gonna chip I love I love him.
Let him know, Paul George, I just sent you home
last year, and I love him. Not only sent you home,
I sent you to a home address. And then with
Patrick Beverley, because Patrick Beverley is the ultimate irritant, Like
just for him to be so over the top waving
(38:23):
by or whatever you knew Dame Dollar wasn't gonna have
that was going to fire back. Dame Lillard broke up
the thunder, Dameleward. Dame Lillard was the reason they got
rid of Russell Westbrook and Paul George. Both of them forgot.
And the way that he did it to where he
took an awful shot from about forty feet out and
then and then waved by by. And here's and here's
(38:45):
the thing. There are certain ways that you can do it.
I've always said this, Like if you just wave at
somebody left and right, like for Scump style, it's kind
of nerdy. It's like when you give somebody to the
middle finger and you put, you know, your thumb out
to the side. It doesn't see, it doesn't it doesn't happen. No, no,
because it just looks like, okay, come on, like like
you have some have some grind, have some grit too.
(39:05):
But the fact that Dame Lillard when he waved by
by did the hand open and closing, that's the That's
the equivalent to tucking all four fingers in and just
exposing the one middle finger like that. That's so the
way that he did it. The presentation after a forty
ft terrible shot to wipe out the thunder and and
and leave them without Russell Westbrook in a couple of
(39:27):
months and without Paul George that was insult to injury.
But this is awesome, and it's exactly why whatever they're
doing in the NBA, it's working, because not only are
you going to have red asses in the postseason, but
you're also gonna have red asses in the postseason who
are tired of being locked up. So it's gonna be
I can't wait for the playoffs. I have no idea
(39:48):
what's gonna happen. Look, I like the intimacy of the
bubble because the bubble has basically recreated a basketball all
of these guys, and so look, the trash talk is real,
and I absolutely love the acted Dame do all the
fireback at Patrick Belly, but also like the fact that
Patrick Building and Paul George didn't mind giving it to
Dame Blue. Yeah, listen, if you're gonna if you're gonna
(40:08):
dish it out, you gotta be able to take it.
And that's what we're seeing on full display in the NBA.
We've got more out of the National Football League next
year on FSR. Well, just because we might have a
little bit of bad news in college football doesn't mean
it's all bad news in the world of football. We
will have that for you here coming up in just
a couple of moments. That guy right over there's Bucky Brooks.
(40:29):
I'm Jonas Knox. This is Fox Sports Radio. You can
check out the show on the I Heart Radio app
and on all of our Fox Sports Radio affiliates. Wherever
you are taking part in the program. We always appreciate
a few minutes of your time as we come to
you live from the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios, Where
fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on
(40:50):
car insurance. Visit Geico dot com for a free rate quote.
Ladies and gentlemen, my guy Bucky Brooks, what's going on?
John's what's happening in just trying to put a smile
on people's faces, you know, trying to get him out
of the doom and gloom. No more MAC football? And now,
were you a frequent watcher of MAC football? Uh? During
(41:13):
the week where I would check it out? Seems like
he came on every weekday, but yeah, I would check
it out. Yeah, So it was Tuesdays and Wednesdays I
think are when the MAC comes on if you've missed it.
The maclimated announcement earlier today, no football in the fall,
and so some have now reported that that means bad
news for college football all over the place. Before we
(41:34):
get into just some some NFL conversation, that is good news.
You've you've talked to Bruce Feldman about this, the idea
of having the FCS play spring football, And I don't
mind the idea at all because I think it opens
things up. I think it creates an opportunity on a
standalone stage for them to be able to showcase their
(41:56):
skills and their abilities with no competition next to the
f BS and all the power of five schools and
the top tier programs. So as much as I'm okay
with that happening, I'm absolutely not okay with them kicking
the can down the road, so to speak, and just
moving the fall football season in in the FBS to
the spring. I'm not okay with it in the Power
(42:18):
five just not you. Not, No, not at all, absolutely not,
because because then what happens to the following season they
played They played in the fall, Okay, so we're just
going to have that quick of a turnaround. It doesn't
either either we're playing this fall or they're gonna end
up canceling the season altogether. We don't we don't know
(42:40):
what the hell is going to happen, and everyone keeps saying, oh,
we'll wait till the spring, will wait till the spring.
We don't know what what sort of if there's going
to be a vaccine by the spring. But with more time,
more time you can make better decisions. More information is
always better. So it just gives you a chance to
put it together, better plan in place to make it happen.
Because if the National Football League plays like it looks
like are going to play well, all of these athletic
(43:02):
directors and coaches and administrators would get a chance to
look at what the NFL did successfully to then begin
to put into practice. And so when you take more information,
and I think it's only going to help college football go.
And then when you talk about the quick turnaround depended
upon when they start, if it ends in May and
then they start again in August, September, Man, you can
(43:25):
do that. I don't put enough time to do that.
At some point, we gotta stop running away from this.
You gotta deal with what what's in front of you, Like,
I just what are we Like, why are we running
away if you don't want to have fans? If you
don't And I would actually argue that players are actually
in a safer environment when they're they're on campus getting
treatment and being in a place to where they can get,
(43:48):
you know, a relief if something happens, if they test positive,
there's something there for him, then knowing what the hell
is going to happen when they go back home, like
it feels like a more controlled environment. I just think
the idea of continuing to kick this down the road
and say, well, we'll get to it in the spring,
or we'll get to it next summer. Man, at some point,
we just got to look at square in the eyes
and go it's not going anywhere. So we gotta figure
(44:09):
this thing out and and and deal with what's in
front of us. I mean, I hear you, and I
hear to hear the concerns or whatever. I just think
like taking the time to be able to take all
of the information in, I think you can set up
a reasonable plan to return to play and so in
the spring. I think you can make it happen. And
I also think that you can set it up where, uh,
your strength coaches, your medical people can also tell you
(44:29):
how to transition from having spring football to getting back
to being able to play again in the fall. And
I know people who talk about the amount of snaps
and reps and all those other things, but just know
every player on a college roster is not going to
be participating in every snap, and so there's more than
enough time and rest and recovery and all that other
stuff for players to be able to play in the
(44:50):
spring but then also be able to play in the fall.
All right, Bucky Brooks Jonas snocks here on Fox Sports Rading,
we did have a little bit of good news. I
guess you could call it that. In the NFL, they've
got point of care testing has now been added to it,
and and the idea behind point of care testing UH
in UH in the NFL at training camps and whatnot
is that instead of having to send your samples to
(45:13):
a lab, they can actually find out there on the
spot whether or not you have COVID. And so because
of that, it means less likely a chance that somebody
walks around with COVID and starts spreading it to the
locker room and spreading it to others because they're waiting
on their results, and you'll at least know they're on
the spot whether someone has it or not. And I
(45:33):
think part of this was what came out in the
false positive from Matt Stafford. And so Matt Stafford had,
you know, a tested positive and then he tested negative
a bunch of times and people wondering what's going on here,
and he wasn't exactly thrilled that it was just reported
that he was positive when he had all these other
(45:54):
UH negative tests that were mixed in. So the idea
behind this is, let's at least find out here and
not wait to have to send it to a lab.
And so at least from that regard, it feels like
good news for the NFL. Yes, he's good news. There.
You go over to Debbie Downer. Yeah yeah, So imagine
how much more progress they will be able to make
with three, four or five months and listen, Okay, can
(46:17):
I I'm just gonna be honest about this. I know,
deep down, I know that college football is in real trouble. Okay,
I know that, but I refuse to be public about
that because I would rather live in fear internally and
fake the confidence on the outside. All Right, I would
rather live like that because it makes me feel better
and presents an aura of confidence and not exactly there,
(46:40):
but at least makes me feel like we're gonna have
college football in the fall. So because of that, again,
like I said earlier, I am going to be the
band on the Titanic. If anybody wants in, We've got
a couple instruments left, and I'm gonna go down with
the boat. So if college football is going down this fall,
I'm gonna drown along with him. What's happening. I don't
really drowned. I'm just saying I think some college football
(47:02):
is going to be played. I think Power five conferences
will be played. I think the other stuff. I think
the return in the spring. I think then it's just
a matter of setting up the calendar to make it happen.
Because when you talk about some of those schools, like
we were talking about um the North Dakota State and
South Dakota in doors, they may not be able to
play in the early part of what we would call
the spring, like they won't be able to play in
(47:23):
January February just because the conditions won't necessarily allow it.
But maybe early March we can get them to kick off.
We can make it happen. I just man, if we
gotta have call shop on the fall, come on, come on, man.
In the fall though, doesn't have to always be in
the fall, because it's tradition, all right, It's like having
Thanksgiving in April, Like who the hell wants that? Man?
(47:45):
Like I need to see the leaves the guy that
never eats dessert before dinner. Everything has to be not
a protocol, it's a compartment. I have to earn it.
I have to earn it. How do you earn it?
You gotta be in the clean plate clubs. Do you
want to know why Christmas is at the end of
the year, because you gotta earn it all year long
before you can get it. That's how That's where I
come from. I like to earn it. I'm also not
(48:05):
one of those lazy asses who waits until midnight of
Christmas Eve and then opens gifts. No, no, no, you
wait until Christmas morning. All right. My wife's family like
to open up gifts at midnight and I absolutely refuse,
absolutely refuse this. And no, no, no, we gotta earn this.
We're we're waiting until the morning to open up Christmas. Wow. Yeah, really,
(48:25):
we gotta we gotta earn it. I mean that's really hard.
Just hand this really really hard core. Got to earn everything, absolutely,
like I'm I'm, I'm, I'm a big believer in earning.
Let's go live to our I would like to crap
all over holidays and college football and everything else in general.
Iowa Sam for the latest, Sam. I got nothing to
(48:46):
say about holidays. They're fine as they are right now.
But I will say this, I think college football is
doable in the South in the spring because the temperatures
aren't well. It was like, like, let's say, in the South,
was like fifty in sixties in March February, March, but
you try to do college football in the Midwest in February,
(49:07):
and it's a mess, which means a mess. It's a mess.
Like what it's a mess? It is? But to balls teams,
what about teams like Northwestern who have an all grass
fields gonna be a mud hole looked at. They have
a main screw. Their groundskeeper has to figure out grass
in January, carpet figure it out. No one told him
(49:29):
to go grass. They should have went turf years ago.
I like that. F that. If you've seen Northwesterns new
facilities that they've gotten in recent years, I don't know
if it's fully built yet, but oh my god, Northwestern
is fine. They're doing fine. Listen, there's there's a simple
solution all this. We've got to have college football on
the fall, all right. A month from now we are
(49:49):
going to be discussing actual college football games. It's happening.
If you don't believe so, I'm gonna be like, was
it a Jim Fossil back when he was coaching the
Giants when he said, I'm pushing all much up to
the center of the table. This team is going to
the playoffs. All right? Whoever's with me, you're with me.
Whoever's out get out. Yeah, I don't know. Damn right.
We're having college football in the fall, everybody. Yep, it's happening,
(50:12):
Absolutely happening. We're also having Halloween in the fall. We're
also having Thanksgiving in the fall. It is all happening,
and it's starting a little over a month from now.
And don't worry for everybody out there that's saying, oh
my god, well, if they're going to cancel all the
college football, don't worry about it. You're still gonna get
the opportunity to win back your money on Power five
(50:32):
games you lost because Hawaii is also going to be
playing on Saturday nights. I'm gonna be positive. Yeah, somebody,
somebody's gonna be willing to want to go to the
island of Oahu to try and take on that Powerhouse
program led by Todd Graham. Somebody's gonna want to do it. Bucky.
I'm telling you, you know what I want you to honor.
I want you to have one of those mikes. Um,
when you're in a studio again, I want you to
(50:53):
have one of those tis those Ted Talk mikes. Instead
of the normal set of where you got your nice
little hit balls into Mike. Yeah, I want you to
have a tie Graham thing. And I want you also
to wear wrist bands on both wrists when you when
you come in, Mike, what's wrong with that? Because that's
what damn right his fancy headset to in Arizona State.
It was like gold or something. Wasn't like microphone. It's
(51:15):
a it's a Ted talk hold on, don't you are band?
Shame but grant Todd Graham all right, listen, Dusty Dusty
Baker walked around. He had sheets of notebook paper on
his arms and two picks in his mouth. And we're gonna,
We're gonna mock Todd Graham, the Great Todd Graham, the Grandma.
(51:36):
Damn right he is. I mean, he made Mike Bercovici
Heisman candidate. Boy, he did Taft Zone Mike Bercovici, he
made me x filver a day. Didn't hold on, hold
on a second? Did Burco go to Taft? Burko and
Michael Thomas were the duo um at Taft. When I
was in Notre Dame. We played against him in Burko
through for about five hundred yards, no kidding, Yeah, Taft
(51:59):
in a Woodland hills Hills, California, so Berko. Berko was
the quarterback. By the way, you go right up Ventura
Boulevard there when you when you get off to go
to tabs, go right up there and there's a bowling alley.
Uh it's uh, I kind of want to. It's called
Corbin Bowl and h in the lanes are too greased stuff.
I couldn't really bowl well there, but if you go
(52:20):
to Bronze would can seem me Valley. Back in the day,
I bowled a two ninety little little inside my damn
right eight and a spare and eleven straight strikes. Bowed
a two ninety two games later, bo to sixty seven
left handed. I bowled a two one with a house ball.
I used to be pretty good back in the day.
Buggy brooks Um started doing this, and then uh, you
(52:42):
know the rest of history. You know, I was decided,
you know, I want to. I want to. I'm tired
of all the negativity and sports stock radio. I'm gonna
give up my bowling career and I'm gonna be an optimist.
And that's why I say there's gonna be college football
next month, just like that Mr Optimist here, That's what
you're doing right now? Yeah? Absolutely, UM love you just
ask you before we're gonna break how many players in
(53:02):
the NFL, since we're talking about this new testing that
they're putting in, this point of care testing to where
they're gonna be able to get results faster, how many
players in about a month or so, are going to
regret the fact that they opted out? Because I think
it's a real thing. I think players are going to
regret it. And I'm surprised that the NFL didn't give
them an opportunity to opt back in. No, because I
(53:24):
think what's what's what you saw? You had owners and
people growing frustrated with I guess they didn't think as
many players would opt out UM, and so they're trying
to cap so they can kind of look either in
or out. So they kind of determined because from a
team building UM standpoint, it's hard when you have so
much movement at this time of the year, when you're
also in the bowlve when you can't really bring guys
(53:45):
into workout, and so some people kind of wanted to
solidify their things so they can bring the eight guys
into camp that they wanted to bring. But I do
think there will be some remorse, but I think most
of the guys that made this decision made it knowing. Look,
I can't go in and I won't want to understand,
Like because you see the figures, the one and fifty
thou dollar figure, and then you see the two fifty
(54:06):
dollar figure for high risk guys. Yeah, I just want
you to understand that that is just a little more
than half of what the rookie minimum salary is. So
for the people that think that guys are just taking
this cash and run into just gonna kind of park
on the beach, they're taking less than they would actually
make if they were on a team. And also, this
money is not necessarily free money. It's an advance against
(54:30):
your next year's self. So if you're a guy that
gets cut next year, you're still allowable for the hundred
and fifty or three and fifty thou dollars that you
took this year, So it's not an end run around
the situation. You still have to give this money back. Yeah,
it's borrowing from yourself. Basically, it's transferring. It's transferring funds
from one account to the next. Thing going oh my god,
(54:51):
I'm wealthy. Now you just stole for another account that yours. Yeah,
so you're not really Yeah, I hear you. Bucky Brooks.
Jonas snocks here on Fox Sports Radio from the Geico
Fox Sports Radio Studios. All right, coming up next, we
are going to hear from a very heartbroken individual. Alright,
he is heartbroken. He will have intimate knowledge on the
major news that just went down in college football earlier
(55:14):
today and it's yours next year. On fs ARE, he
is Bucky Brooks. I'm Jonas Knox. This is Fox Sports Radio.
You can check out this show on the I Heart
Radio app. Coming up in a little over ten minutes
from now here on fs ARE, we have an update
on a story that we talked about a short time ago,
a major update. Tensions are running high in Orlando. We
(55:39):
will have that for here coming up in about ten
minutes from now on Fox Sports Radio. Right now, he
is kind enough to join us as always here on
fs ARE. He is Bruce Gradkowski, former NFL quarterback now
an analyst for Pro Football Focus. And gotta be a
little bit of a bummer of a day or start
to the day, Bruce, with the announcement of the MAC
(56:04):
not having football this fall. You being a Toledo Rocket.
Great a bummer for you guys there in the MAC
Football Conference. Man, crazy news, you know, And I just
want to apologize off the bat doin it? Uh and
Bucky if I'm in the car driving from Pittsburgh back
to Toledo after seeing the grandparents, my parents, So we
(56:27):
have the three kids in the car. Lily seven, she's
our princess. She's doing amazing on the ride. Roman he's
our five year old. He's knocked out sleeping after his
sugar crash from all the sugar at the grandparents house.
And our three year old Lincoln. Lincoln's the best, but
he's uh have you ever seen their incredibles? He's like
(56:47):
the little one. Uh. I never know what he's gonna do.
So I'm just I'm giving you guys the heads up now.
But back to the to the MAC man, I you know,
I was. I don't want to say I was sad.
I just I guess I'm concerned for players, especially players
that you know, are seniors and things of that sort of.
(57:08):
But I'm also encouraged because I really do you know,
as far as the logistics, I don't know how at
all officiality would work out. But I always said, I'd
much rather than that make the decision now in college
football just to push it to spring, not try to
navigate through this time unsure. If you're gonna play a
(57:30):
few games, if you're gonna play the whole season, what's
gonna happen? Why not just make that call now you
have time to prepare for what that spring looks like.
And then you know everyone's talking about but that's such
a close back to back season. Well then maybe start
the next season in October and then you can kind
of get back into normal type football routine after that season.
(57:54):
I think it can work. Um, you know, I just
hope for the MAC that they can in and will
you know, be able to make the spring thing work out.
And I think it could be a good thing, guys,
because you know, I made my living on Tuesday under
Tuesday night lights in the MAC in the ESPN game
on Tuesday Wednesday night. So hopefully that would be more
(58:16):
of that in the spring. You know, Bruce, is funny
that you talked You talked about that like having more
eyes on the conference because I had an opportunity to
talk to some general managers and some directors of personnel
this week and I asked him if college football moves
to the spring, how does it change the scouting process,
And they said, hey, it really won't change anything. If anything,
(58:37):
we actually have an opportunity to really spend more time
digging in to the spring. So now I want to
pose this to you, as a top rated quarterback in
the MAC. If you were forced to make a decision
between playing in the spring or opting out and preparing
for the draft, which would you choose? Man, that's you know, Bucky,
(58:57):
that's a great question, and I think, um, I think you.
I think you play. I mean, there's nothing better than
real life football. Proven yourself and you could go with
the combine. You could do the drills, you can run
a heck of a forty, you could throw the lights
oide of the ball. But playing actual football. And now,
(59:18):
like you just pointed out, scouts, generalman managers, coaches get
a better look because now they're not worried about their season.
It could be great now. The only thing too, the
we're talking about like a Buyron left Erst your Ben
Roethlisberger type. You know, whether you know a first round
or no doubt, you know, if that's the case, you
opt out. But if you're a guy like myself that
(59:41):
I was going into my senior year, I had two
years starting under my belt already, I played a lot
of games. I won a MAC championship already. You know,
I had some good momentum going to my senior year.
I still think it would be important for me to
play in the spring UM, And honestly I think that, uh,
that stretch from afric college football through the draft and
(01:00:04):
O T s. That's a long period of time with
All Star Game combine Pro days. So man, now you
just you cut some of that out and now you
get real life football going on. Bruce Grandkowski joining us
here on Fox Sports Radio. Former NFL quarterback now an
analysts for Pro Football Focus with us here, Jonas knocks
Bucky Brooks here on fs are. Let me ask you
(01:00:25):
about this UM and another one of your former teams,
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tom Brady was talking this week
Bruce about the difficulty of having to learn a new
playbook that he hadn't done it in a long long
time as somebody who played the position, somebody who played
it on multiple teams, who had to learn a bunch
of different playbooks throughout the course of his career. How
difficult is that and maybe something that's overlooked by fans
(01:00:48):
who just assume, oh, you know, you're just calling plays,
that's a big deal. Oh, it's It's like learning a
new language. And that's why I give Brady a lot
of credits this point in his career. He has all
the accolades, all the championship, Super m v P s.
I mean, what what more is he playing for? He
he doesn't play for the money, and that's what I
love about him. He's still driven, he still has a
(01:01:10):
chip on his shoulder, but man, that playbook. Learning a
new system is tough because it doesn't click as fast,
you know. That's why they talk about guys like uh
Daniel Jones. Now he's going to the second year, but
he's a new offensive coordinator. Uh Dwayne Haskins, same thing
going in the second year, but as a new offensive coordinator,
and the things Alex Smith went through, all the different coordinators,
(01:01:32):
you know, early on in his career. UH Kyler Murray
being lucky to have his same offense back for his
second year. So it's important to be in the same
system because you can just continue to get better out
and learning because it's it's you're not just gonna learn
it all in a year, and you continue to get
more comfortable with it, the playbook opens up more. You
(01:01:52):
have more options, more audible. And I think for Tom Brady,
what he might have called a concept in w England, uh,
it might it will be called something different in Tampa Bay.
So it's like you know the English language in Spanish
and you know things of that's what, but it doesn't
hit your mind as smooth and easy, so you have
(01:02:15):
to it takes a little longer to process, uh, and
at the quarterback position, and you've got to play fast.
So tom Brady, you know, initially will be out there like, Okay,
I know what I want to get to and I
know the protection car I want to make. But we
called it, you know, Louis in New England and now
we just say lefty here in Tampa Bay. Like so
(01:02:36):
those are the little nuances. But man, Tom Brady is
ultimate pro. I'm sure he's gonna be able to handle it.
You know. It's funny you talk about Tom Brady, who
is one of the guys that may be uh leaving
the league here shortly Joe Burrows coming in and the
reports have been good about Joe Burrow in Cincinnati. Now
we haven't had opportunity to see him. But what do
you expect from Joe Burrow being a guy that is
(01:02:58):
expects to be a rookie star here from day one?
You know, I think it's it's what he brings, not
only physically but mentally. I think it's his confidence as MOXI,
his demeanor in the huddle, of the leadership qualities that
he has. That's one of the most important things. You know,
it's a quarterback position because you're gonna have ups and downs. Uh, Coaches, teammates,
(01:03:20):
they want to see how you handle those because throughout
the course of the game, throughout the course of the season,
you're gonna have some bad moment. But who who's confident
enough to step in that huddle and and have the
same demeanor whether things are going great or things are
going you know, bad. And I think Burrow has that
and I think that's what separates him. And now it's
(01:03:43):
gonna be a learning curve. He had no O t
A S, he had no mini camp. To speed of
the game is a lot different in the NFL than college. Uh,
and then he's learning a new offense. So but I
do think he could be successful. And I think the
major thing that separates them is that poison composure and
that com fin it stepping in the huddle. Bruce Gradkowski,
(01:04:04):
former NFL quarterback, Nanna and an analysts excuse me, an
analyst for Pro Football Focus joining us here on Fox Sports.
I know it, listen. Uh. And and the reason that
I maybe I'm I'm slurring my words is that you
and I were having a conversation on Twitter about the
Cuban coffee. All right, and I want you to just
tell this story because I just saw the message earlier today.
(01:04:25):
But you and I were having a conversation about the
Cuban coffee in Miami for the Super Bowl, and um,
your mom in Pittsburgh used to treat some of your
teammates back when you would be playing there. Tell us
the story about how it impacted Andrew Whitworth back with
with a visit to you to your mom's house back
in the day. Yeah, So, Bucky, you know, I slide
(01:04:48):
into you know, Jonas d M. Splitter and the and
the and the guy plays me for two days. No,
but uh, you know, so, so I was in the
mood for one of those coffees, and then it had
me think about the time. But you know, anytime I
was playing for a team and we'd come back to
(01:05:09):
play for the play against the Steelers, I would bring
the old lineman, especially the alignment to my parents house. Quarterbacks,
you know, whoever wanted to on the offensive side of
the ball to my parents for dinner. But most of
the time it is the alignement. So I'm playing for
the Bengals, we can't we come back home to Pittsburgh
to play the Steelers. I bring, you know, I have
(01:05:29):
a van set up to pick us up the hotel
who they shuttle us over to my parents house. We
got this whole spread of all this great food my grandma,
mom wife, everyone helped put together. And um, you know,
my mom's senior Tali and she makes good coffee. And
the next day in the locker room, uh, you know
(01:05:50):
we're getting you know, in Heinz Field, we're getting ready
for the Steelers. Worth comes up to me, goes, I'm
talking like to the whole line and what we're It's like, man,
what did your mom put in her coffee? He goes,
I was wired like four am with cold sweats and
I kept waking up. I mean, I just I'm gonna
(01:06:12):
be honest. I loved it. But I was also like,
I kept playing the football game today. That's so good man.
The first time I ever had I Hop coffee, I
thought somebody put cocaine inside of it. I was like,
what is going on here? Like this is this is
an abnormal feeling. So at least at least Whitworth got
some good Pittsburgh coffee from the great uh Mama Gradkowski
(01:06:36):
back in the day, Bruce, before we let you go, um, Iowa,
Sam's our technical producer here at Fox Sports Radio. He
has been harassing me NonStop via text. Uh. He has
to brag to you that you guys have a mutual acquaintance.
So go ahead, Iowa saying four is yours? Ball washed
Bruce Gradkowski. Here we go. Let's get this out of
(01:06:57):
the Bruce. I understand you work with Brent. I'll been
out on a show. Do you not? Oh? I did? Yeah?
You did? You you still do? Or you did? At
one point I did so, Brent and I Brent was
the play by play for Felido Radio to Toledo Football
here and uh Toledo the latter. He still is, but
(01:07:17):
for for two years I did it with him as
a color analyst. Uh, and we had some great moments,
like he's super professional and he's good. He the way
he and I'm more like I sling it dies. I mean,
if you if you haven't noticed, so I think I
made him nervous at times, but Bent, Brent's a good dude.
He doesn't fantastic job. I used to work with him
at this station called k g y M and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
(01:07:39):
So it's kind of neat that you know Brent and
I know Brent from his days back in Iowa. He's
now with Toledo. Oh and I'd kind of get tired
of some of the Iowa stories because we get ready
for Toledo game Welcome to the Club, and he was
watching like the Iowa Iowa State game and he's all
into it. I'm like, come on, bro, we gotta get
ready for the Toledo game for I don't wa I'm
(01:08:02):
and I'm and I'm secretly hoping Iowa State whoops. But
oh yes, they'll have to wait another year. Yeah. Matt
Campbell's the head coach and the head coach of Salito,
so yeah, that's cool though Iowa. Guys, I'll tell you
what there it is. See, so we're not alone, Bucky
and Dave Gascon We're Bruce is also sick of Iowa.
(01:08:24):
We're all sick of i Well, we have to hear
about it every second week on this show. Tired of it?
Bruce Bruce Gradkowski, former NFL quarterback, now and analysts for
Pro Football Focus. Get him on Twitter at b Gradkowski five. Bruce,
always appreciate it, man. Your kids were awesome. No noise
in the background. They are troopers. Good job man. Well,
(01:08:46):
I think my wife stuffed him with some more sugar.
So we'll see how the rest of the rides goes. Right,
there's that good stuff. Bruce will do it again next week. Thanks, guys,
have a good week. Jonah Stocks Bucky Brooks here on
Fox Sports Radio. Did you know that? Right now guy
goes offering an extra fifteen percent credit on car and
motorcycle and RV policies. That's fift on top of a
(01:09:06):
Geico could already save you. So what are you waiting for?
Save an extra when you switch? By October seven? Visit
Geico dot com to learn more. Up next, we have
an update on a heated situation in Orlando and the
world of sports. It's yours next year on fs ARE
for all the latest stiff from around the world of sports.
Tom Brokaw, who's on the updates today, that's what's up Gas?
(01:09:32):
I'm a question for you. What's up Gas? The the
Iowa minute that that's not occurring on any other shows
during the week, right, it's like one segment. It's exclusive
to this. By the way, By the way, how about
the fact how many drops did we just get from
Bruce Gradkowski there when he said I was so sick
of Iowa I was secretly cheering for Iowa State like
(01:09:54):
all the he basically that was Dave gascon in Bruce
Gradkowski's body right there. That you just heard that Bruce
has a Matt Campbell bias because Campbell was a coach
at Toledo. Let's come, let's go ducks in line here.
What do you mean I thought Matt Campbell was the
next big thing. What happened? Oh he is, he's still
rising to the top. Yeah, come on, Bucky, back me
up here. Come on, Bucky, just like Scott frost Huh,
(01:10:18):
give Frosty a little more time, I'd say, Yeah, I
keep gota keep hearing that. But for some reason, they
were they were, they were a ranked team lasted year,
and they're ranked coming into this season. I'll get to
that too. That's embarrassing when Scott Frost even points out,
I don't know why we're ranked. Even when he points
it out that, that just goes to show you there's
a bias with some of these rankings that people come
(01:10:39):
out with, where they put a number next to somebody's
team name and just assume they're getting in correct. It's bogus. Hey,
I'll just say this, it's hard to win eight games
at Iowa State, So give Campbell a little credit, right,
all right, that's all I got. Whatever I mean, I
don't know, Hey, what happened? What happened? What happened to
Dave's update? I don't know, man, you were such a
blow harda The Iowa Minutes started early at twenty more
(01:11:03):
minutes to the Iowa Minute. That the Iowa Minute was
actually played this week during the Ben Mallor Show, so
that if that happened, then not have it happened during
the you know, during today's shout copy. That's an exclusive
right to this right. I may have talked. That's what
I heard. I may have talked about the Isola minute,
but I didn't do the Island minute. How does it
(01:11:25):
feel to be a cheater? Island? I didn't cheat, I
didn't play. The imaging didn't happen. Do them wrong, Jonas,
I have been I have been saving up for t Man.
That's what you get, Jonas fun on the Ben Maller Show. Though,
good time, it's gonna see yeah sorright, that's all right, receipts,
(01:11:46):
that's right, scum Iowa Sam, alright, where's that anyways? Uh
turn off your mic. Shut up for a second. Um, guys.
We'll start things off first in the NBA handful of
games today and obviously tonight as well. Utah and Denver
and a barn burning. They're going back and forth to score.
Utah Rody go Berry twenty two points. Michael Porter Jr.
(01:12:08):
Has got twenty one six so far. Clippers got by
the Trailblazers one, seventeen, Lakers and Pacers in about twenty
minutes from now. No Denny Green the Lake showing that
one heat and Sun's tip off tens at seven thirty eastern.
But why the Bucks and the Mavericks. That will be
the nightcap at eat thirty Eastern Major League Baseball, Aaron Judge,
Young Carlos stant with home runs, Yankees deal up the
(01:12:29):
raise eight four and game one of a doubleheader. That
thing lasted just the Merror seven innings tribe over the
White Sox seven to one, Tigers six five lead over
the Pirates and on the ice Vegas Gold tonight to
leave the Colorado Avalanche late in the third period three
two is a score Flyers and lightning later on this evening,
a certain tweet you want to look at j us
(01:12:51):
oh man, this is so good, Uh Dave, thank you,
We appreciate it. By the way, for those of you
that are also fed up with the Iowa minute, don't worry.
We've got in the gutter with David Gascon coming up
next hour here on the show. The the Iowa minute
is coming up here less than ten minutes from now.
We were talking. We were talking about the pettiness, uh
Dame Lillard after their game against the Clippers earlier today,
(01:13:13):
in which Dame Lillard missed two crucial free throws down
the stretch. Um he called out Pat Beverly mentioned post
game upon them cheering his miss free throws. He called
out Pat Beverly for eliminating him from the playoffs, He
called out Paul George, so on and so forth. So
Pat Beverly goes on Twitter and writes, can coon on three.
(01:13:38):
Now Here's the best part is that he pinned the tweet,
so he made sure that that's gonna stay on there
until he removes it. At the top of his Twitter timeline.
Paul George responds to Pat Beverley and goes, and you
getting sent home this year, laughing emoji respect and Dame
Lowood writes back to Paul George, keeps witch and teams
(01:14:01):
running from the grind. You boys is chumps, So it's
a gentleman, ladies and gentleman. Uh. The claustrophobic atmosphere of
the bubble is starting to take take over there in Orlando,
as Dame Lillard, the red Ass, the resident red Ass
of the n B a UH, is now making a statement.
(01:14:21):
So Jonah, so just imagine this like, because they're bubbled
in kept together, Disney, imagine what happened when they go
to Goofy's kitchen, okay, and they're and they're all there
with their trays what happens. Then there's nothing I want
to see more than Dame Lillard and Pat Beverley throw
down by the Teacups. I swear to God by the Teacups.
(01:14:45):
In fact, I want a screenshot of like a Nurkic
sending sending a text to Paul George saying, uh, you know,
meet me by by Splash Mountain at that and they
just it is. It's awesome something because of the nation,
because there's nothing else to do. These guys have to
be completely locked in on basketball. The trash talking to
(01:15:07):
in the playoffs. I mean it may be at a
fever pitch, Oh god, I mean it may it may
be unlike anything that we've seen, like we've seen little
dust ups or whatever. But now I mean because there's
no other there's no distractions, not just it's just ball
all day. This could be glorious and anything that you
aren't able to get in the bubble that you normally
(01:15:27):
would get if you weren't in the bubble, all those
frustrations are being taken out on players. Yes, absolutely, like
you completely locked in, completely locked in. So good. Oh man,
I can't wait to watch how this plays out. Jonas
knocks Bucky Brooks here on Fox Sports Radio. All right,
coming up next. Uh listen, It's been called by members
of this show the worst thing we do the entire show.
(01:15:49):
Find out why. Next year on FSR was this tone loke? Yes,
all right? Uh, Jonas knocks Buckey Brooks here on Fox
Sports Radio. You can check out the show on the
I Heart Radio app. Coming up here in a little
over ten minutes from now here on fs are Uh,
(01:16:12):
Bucky Brooks continuing to throw shade, continuing to throw shade.
I feel like I was very positive. We add in
all time great quarterback. We know, we know. I'm just
saying Bucky Brooks has an opinion on a division in
the NFC that is probably going to insult many people
(01:16:33):
out there. I didn't have an opinion. Somebody somebody on
a team in the opinion. I just kind of let
everyone know it missed it. Okay, Well, I mean you
know the you you did point out that that that
person was correct in their assessment that that person. Yeah,
all right, so we will have that for year coming
up in about ten minutes from now on Fox Sports Radio.
(01:16:54):
Right now, though, it is time for something we don't
want to get to but we have to. It's time
for this. I kind of get tired of some of
the Iowa stories. Hey got a minute? Heaven? Oh Iowa?
Like you give a damn Now, presenting the most up
to date happenings from Iowa's four Division one teams, ladies
(01:17:16):
and gentlemen, thousand pigs, It's the Iowa Minute. Here's Iowa
sam al right, here more stories from Iowa. Bruce. Sorry, well, guys,
goodness gracious, we have a huge Iowa minute where stuffed
were loaded so many stories. Uh, let's get to this.
We'll go in chronological order here. So if there is
a college basketball season, the game is getting back a
(01:17:40):
prolific player, guys. Yes, Iowa center Luca Garza, the raigning
Big Ten Player of the Year, a consensus All American.
He announced his return last Sunday for his senior season.
Iowa will be loaded like this Iowa minute. Assuming there
is a season and college seasons hanging in the balance. Well,
we'll get to that in a minute. But question Luca Garza.
(01:18:02):
He was player of the year, correct, yes, he was? Okay? Well,
but the big time and I'm saying in all the
college basketball is the way you talked about exploits college
basketball call Play of the Year. Yeah, it was like
Luca Donkeys. So I'm just wondering, is that is so?
So did he get it? Actually? The official award and
all of college basketball Obie Topping robbed him all the
those awards. It was a popularity contest. All right. Let's
(01:18:24):
move on. First, guys, we uh we were supposed to
have Major League Baseball's Field of Dreams Game this coming Thursday,
August thirteenth in Dyersville, Iowa White Sox and Cardinals at
the new Ballpark adjacent to the original site. Well, Monday
it was made official. The game has been moved to one.
It will be the White Sox and another team. Maybe
they can get the Yankees back. Who the original opponent? Okay,
(01:18:47):
why not the Cubs? Why not the Cubs? Cubs would
be nice. It comes to be nice. It was originally
gonna be White Sox and Yankees, and it was White
Sox and Cardinals, and now it's just been postponed until
next year. The stadium has been built though, So that's nice. Okay,
Before we get to the elephant in the room that
bargets way into our lives this Saturday, let's just play
and make believe we stay in This past Monday where
the Big Twelve announced to plan for a nine game
(01:19:09):
football conference schedule plus one non conference game. The twenty
five ranked Cyclones in the Coaches Bowl had added ball
State to their schedule to take the place of Iowa.
Well hold the phone on that one, as the MAC
decided to postpone its season until next spring. As we
all know, ball State out. The other two options are
South Dakoast State of the FCS and U L U
(01:19:31):
n l V. But we know now as a Friday
night that the Missouri Valley Conference Football uh of Missouri
Valley Football Conference has also moved its season to the spring,
so that leaves U n l V as Iowa States
sole non conference option right now, and with the announcement
from the NBC that will also impact Northern Iowa, the
(01:19:52):
Panthers will play eight conference foes only next spring. Quickly
back to Iowa State for just a moment. Huge hoops
get for Steve Prome and the Cyclone men's basketball team.
Tyreas Hunter, a top one hundred guard, a four star
guy from Wisconsin, has pledged his allegiance to Iowa State.
That recruiting update brought to you by Yes, Yes, all
(01:20:16):
right quickly, Now, alright, we'll close with this guy's let's
rewind to last Wednesday. Hey, it was some hopeful news
Big ten schedules released. Yes, I was supposed to open
at home against Maryland on September five in front of
ten to fifteen thousands socially distanced fans in Iwa City.
But today Saturday, some things began to rise to the top.
(01:20:36):
First it was Big ten commissioner Kevin Warren announcing that
padded practices would be delayed until further notice. Then we
got worried about Big ten presidents meeting today about something
uh imminent. And now we have stuff from Brett McMurphy
and the Detroit Free Press and UH pro Football focused
that the season may be doomed. That's the Iowa minute there.
What do we say about that sit in the darkness?
(01:20:59):
Something bad? Happy I admitted here on Fox Sports Radio.
It's funny, no h no more allegations at Iowa. He
didn't have any hard time constraints. Scott Well, well, well,
say hello to an old friend, an old friend who
has popped back up into our sports scene, and that
(01:21:23):
man is Bucky hater, Brooks, We will have that for
you here coming up in just a couple of moments.
Jonas knocks here on Fox Sports Radio. He is Bucky Brooks.
You can check out this show on the I Heart
Radio app and on all of our Fox Sports Radio affiliates.
Wherever you are taking part in the program. We appreciate
a few minutes of your time as we come to
(01:21:44):
you live from the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios, where
fifteen minutes could say fifteen percent or more on car insurance.
Visit Geico dot com for a free rate quote. Bucky Brooks,
Happy Saturday to you. We would like to come in
with better news. But seeing as the Mac football has
been canceled for the season, the conference announcing that earlier today,
(01:22:06):
that definitely is a bummer and a lot of doom
and gloom being spread out there about the potential of
no college football this fall. So we're doing our best here.
So for everybody hanging out with us on a Saturday,
we appreciate it. You know, Yeah, it looks it's it's
a tough day. It's a tough day. Um when the
Mac announces that they won't play in the fall and
they're hoping to play in the spring because you have
(01:22:27):
a lot of young student athletes that are hoping to
have some kind of football because look, has been a
rough period. It's been a rough pier for all young people,
and so you would like to see them get an opportunity.
But at the same time, I think and I think
we should commend the universities hopefully for doing the right
thing by putting healthy, health and safety first. We just
got to make sure that those are the intense is
(01:22:48):
not all about a paycheck. And now we don't know
whether or not the other big time conferences are going
to be making a decision. There's been talks that the
Big ten is going to have a meeting today, uh,
to go over different possibilities. But some people look at
you know, the MAC, you know conference making this decision
and thinking, oh boy, that's just a prelude to what
(01:23:09):
else is going to happen. Um, the MAC has announced
it's going to have a spring season, and I'm telling
you this right now. Uh. Part of the reason I'm
not looking forward to it MAC football in the spring
is because I know that the not so creative, unoriginal
people that produce bits on sports radio and television are
(01:23:32):
going to use that crummy song Return of the Mac
coming in the spring. That song stinks and they're gonna
use it, and it's gonna be overplayed. And that's part
of the reason why I think we need to have
Oh God, I can't handle it. I just can't. It's
like the it's like the Masters theme. It's just it's
(01:23:52):
so cheeseball, like this is this is bad man, Jonas,
you don't like it because it's an uber eats commercials, Right,
lady and gentlemen, Iowa Sam, Iowa Sam. If you were
wondering who jumped in there to take control of the program,
that was Iowa s Sam has been SA has been
very active, Yes, very active, y Iowa Sam. I played
(01:24:16):
this for Steve Hartman earlier today when we were talking
about the Mac. So I already beat it, beat you
to it? Jonas, Okay, well cliche ideas. Yeah, I'm just
telling you the people that the unoriginal folks in sports
radio and television this crappy song that you hear. I mean,
I kind of, I mean, I kind of liked the
song to song. It's just it sounds it's like the song.
(01:24:37):
I mean, it is daated we're we are dated. I
mean this is this is a song that I'm surprised
I could at your wedding into reception like this didn't
pop up when you had the little dance like at
some point, well, here's the problem with my wedding and reception.
I don't think I heard one lick of English for
any music that was yeah, no one. I mean listen
once the once the Mexican side of the family gets
(01:25:00):
ahold of the jukebox, it's over magic. It was a
rat from there. That's all I did was just trying
to maintain my social distancing so that we could have
a very safe wedding and celebration. That's all I was
trying to do. What kind of celebration, you know, Just
(01:25:21):
have a beer appetizer. Okay, our five, Our our five.
We will get into went on, you know later on
in the uh you know when when when Healisco met
thousand Oaks. We will get into that here coming up
later on here on Fox Sports Radio. UM, let me
(01:25:42):
just point out, as much as we're talking about the
return of the Mac and that crap bass song, uh,
let's talk about the return of something else. A villain.
If you will, there are two people who have been
out with pitchforks uh and basically shouting over and over
again about the demise of Tom Brady. Right those two
(01:26:05):
people very quiet souls, people that aren't, you know, really
really loud. One of them is Rob Parker. Rob Parker
who also is the author of the most bizarre drop
in the history of Fox Sports Radio when he decided
that it was a good idea to announce on the
air that he was having a sex change. This from
(01:26:26):
Rob Parker, Rob Parker here on Fox Sports Radio. There
is there's Rob Parker who decided that was that was
an an appropriate thing to say on sports talk radio.
And also Bucky Brooks. Both of you guys have lined
up to talk about the demise of Tom Brady and
it felt like, I mean, I'm just saying it felt
(01:26:48):
like it was happening earlier this week. Now. The context
of this is in regards to a column that Bucky
Brooks put put put together on NFL dot Com talking
about the NFC South Can m Jordan's stud for the
New Orleans Saints. And by the way, not only is
he a stud, but when he's done playing, that guy
is gonna be a rock star in the media. He's standing.
(01:27:10):
Oh my god, he's so good. And Cam Jordan talked
about on NFL Network earlier this week about who is
the team to beat in the NFC South, and he
talked about Tom Brady the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and where
they stack up against his New Orleans Saints. They've got
the second greatest quarterback and all the times right behind
Drew Brees. And now we've got head a head two
(01:27:31):
times a year. Um, okay, you know we've we've we've
got our we've got our work cut out for us. Uh.
And then of course they haven't auditions. You know, you
bring in Gronkowski and the Shawn McCoy, you already had
two thousand yard receivers and Godment and Mike Evans. I mean, um,
this is this is a team that's fighting for second place.
(01:27:53):
They done so there, it is Bucky there, it is
fighting for second place. And you go on to NFL
dot Com and what do you do? You support it?
You support this sort of opinion when it comes to
the NFC South, I mean I do. If you look
back at what the Saints have done, they want to
look three straight Division crowns thirteen and five of the
(01:28:15):
past three years against the division. And I know we
get excited about Tom Brady going down to Tampa and
oh Rob Gronkowski came out of retirement, But and too
you can prove to me that the Buccaneers, the Falcons,
the Panthers are better than the Saints. I I just
have no way of being able to give the crown away.
(01:28:37):
And I also think this is a better version of
the Saints that we've seen. And man, you're Sanders coming over,
Malcolm Jenkins arriveing, returning from Philadelphia back to his home,
and then Genera's Jenkins continue to kind of solidify himself
as the corner opposite Marshawn Lattimore. I just don't I
don't know how these other teams surpassed what the Saints
(01:28:57):
have and have continued to do, which is lowerd over
to division. It's the best division in football in my opinion. Um,
I think it's the best division. I think that in
the NFC, we at NFC West are the most interesting
divisions in all of football. UM, no doubt about it.
I would just say this sooner or later, when you
get this close to a championship and you continue to
(01:29:19):
fall short, It's not like in the NBA, where there's
a slow progression and you advanced past one round and
then you do a little bit more. It's not even
like Major League Baseball, where we've seen the Dodgers continue
to stay in the hunt at sooner or later. Man, Like,
you can't keep losing games at home in the postseason
and expect or lose on fluke endings like you did
(01:29:42):
in Minnesota and just expect that. I'll worry about it.
We'll be back there next year. I think it's done.
I think the window is closed for New Orleans. I
think this is Drew brees final year. Um, this is
with you know, all the controversy in the off season. Withstanding,
I don't know that New Orleans is making the playoffs.
I think Tampa Bay and the best teams in that division. Okay,
(01:30:03):
I think Tampa Bay and Atlanta are the best teams
in that division. Jonas, what's in your cup? Let me
see Saturday? Like, what what is it? Like? What is
in the cup? Because the fact that you're saying not
only that they're not going to win a division, but
the fact that they're not going to make the playoffs,
come on, man, Like, what are you talking about like
they have everybody, everybody coming back, Michael Thomas, Avoca mar
(01:30:27):
and even with Drew Brees, who was an older Drew Brees,
one who has been injured of late, doesn't necessarily push
the ball down the field. You know they have in
the bullepen. They got your guy, Taysom Hill. And if
you don't like Tassom Hill, they have another another guy
in the bulletpen, Mr thirty thirty himself, Jameis Winston Man
(01:30:48):
strike up the band, Okay, doing it again? All right?
But but you know that. And first of all, Sean
Payton sort of spilled the beans this offseason when he
was on an interview and he was talking about how
you know Drew's entering his last season. Well, first of all,
Drew Brees signed a two year deal, all right, Now
that that was a two year deal, and then also
he signed a contract with NBC um, you know, after
(01:31:11):
his playing career was over. And so Sean Payton then
you know, took a step back and said, oh, no,
you know, I misspoke. He definitely plans on playing two years. No,
the truth came out the first time, This is Drew
brees final season, and I just in regards to Drew Brees,
like people talk about, man the demise of Tom Brady
all they want, but man, it does seem like Drew
(01:31:34):
Brees late in seasons, it does seem like his like
that ball starts to die a little bit, like it
is starting to have an impact on him. And I
just think that that division has gotten better. I think
Atlanta has gotten better. I think Caroline is clearly I
think the worst team in the division, but who knows.
Crazier things have happened, and maybe Matt Rule and and
Teddy Bridgewater is a real threat. I just think in
(01:31:55):
looking at how things are shaping up, I'm less high
on the Saints this year than in previous years. I
just don't see how a team that continues to lose
big time games late in the year, even opportunities at
home no less, can can continue to count on that
they're going to be the same team with the same
opportunity to make a deep run like they were before.
And I just think they're so talented. Michael Thomas was
(01:32:18):
offensive played the year last year. Um Alvrica mar has
played at a high level. He is looking to get paid.
Anytime you have a guy in a contract year, typically
it brings about their best um And even if Drew
Brees continues to decline because he's not a guy that
pushes the ball down the field. Most of what they
do is real rhythmic dincon dunk type stuff. But he's
been so effective doing it. I mean, you talking about
(01:32:40):
a guy that's completing over seventy percent of his passages
year after year after year, even though he's older. And
then to think Tom Brady, who we have seen decline
and the class significant, I feel like everyone just feels
like he's gonna go find the founding youth down Darian
Tampa Away they go, and man, the Buccaneers haven't been
to the playoffs in a long time, A long time.
(01:33:03):
It's Tom Brady's fault. I mean, you know, come on, yeah,
I mean they just they I don't even know if
they know the blueprint. They don't like, like, how did
he even know? Um? Let me just ask you this.
And looking around the landscape of the NFC, obviously there's
an added playoff team this year, there's seven playoff teams
in the NFC. How many teams do you think are
(01:33:25):
getting out of the NFC East to go to the playoffs.
We know obviously one being a division winner. Do you
think the NFC still it too? I think one, and
I think the Dallas Cowboys other one. So you don't
so Philadelphia, you don't like Philadelphia this show? I mean
I like him, but I mean everybody can't go to
the party, like everyone can't get in VFP, even though
there's seven teams. So I would say Dallas and Philly
would be the favors to most likely NFC North Green Bay, Minnesota,
(01:33:53):
m hmm, Minnesota. I think Minnesota wins the division and
I think it comes down to Chicago. Think. Man, Yeah,
I don't. I don't know if anybody else outside of that.
So okay, so give me if I have to go back,
and give me two out the East, one out of
the North. All right. So now we're in the South.
The Saints are there, I think the st the Saints.
(01:34:16):
The Saints will be there, and I'm gonna say the
Atlanta Falcons are gonna be right in the mix about that. Okay,
So Saints and Falcons. So you don't think Tampa Bay
is making the playoffs? I just know. I mean they
have a long way to go. Okay. Now, let me
ask you. Okay, what about the NFC West because Niners
Niners and Niners Seahawks, that's right. So we get seven.
(01:34:38):
So we got seven. I think that it's going to
come down to the final playoff spot is going to
come down to and this is just we're just spitballing here,
but I think it's gonna come down to a race
between Philadelphia, Green Bay, New Orleans and the l A Rams. Okay,
I mean, I mean if you take seven, like the
entire conferences in play, so I mean I'm okay with that. Listen,
(01:35:02):
you know, I mean it's it's still a little early.
We've got some time to sort of, you know, formulate
our our you know, our picks here division wise. I
just know what I love about this is you won't
get the benefit of being able to watch preseason games
to determine what your picks are. You're gonna have to
you have to live and that with like your fearless,
bold predictions of type stuff. Let me just go ahead
(01:35:26):
and dispel a notion here now, because Brady Quinn likes
to bust my balls on this stuff as well too.
When I'm doing the bottom ten mock draft where I'm
predicting the bottom ten selections of a draft. Okay, it's ridiculous.
It is also one of the most difficult things that
I do, because like I've got a factor in trades,
(01:35:46):
I've got I mean, people treat seventh round picks like
their pennies. They're just throwing them away. Here take this,
take that a lot of you know, a lot of
players would rather not be drafted, they'd rather sign as
a free agent so they could pick to where they
want to go. So it's really really a pain in
the ask. But but I really do look at this stuff.
I don't base my opinions on the preseason. Now, preseason
stories are fun, but I just think and and maybe
(01:36:10):
this is this is something that I can ask you
as well too. I just think there's a lot of
times this talk about how teams with experience are going
to have the advantage. Ron Rivera throughout an interesting point
earlier this week, and I didn't think about it like
this because I would have tend to have agreed, Alright,
anybody who's got continuity, they're going to have the advantage
going into the season. And Ron Rivera throughout a point
(01:36:31):
for Washington this year and today you know, the one
advantage we have is that nobody knows what we're gonna do.
He's like, they haven't seen us, Like, nobody knows what
we're gonna do. How do people know what Tampa Bay
is gonna look like? I mean, this is a completely
different thing. So I mean, like you've got tape on
what that Saint's offense looks like. You don't really have
tape on what Tampa looks like. And you don't even
(01:36:51):
have a preseason to gauge what Tampa Bay looks like.
So maybe we're looking at this, you know, from a
different way, and maybe, as Ron Rivera points out, there's
a benefit to not knowing what a team is gonna
do a lot. Chip Kelly when he came out with
whatever the hell that offense was in Week one and
it shocked everybody to the system. I mean, there's something
to that. But typically here's what takes place. What you
(01:37:14):
do is when you're um planning against a team that
has a new head coach, Um you don't have any
tape of them, you go back and you study things
that he has done in the past. So if you're
dealing with the Buccaneers, you go back and look at
how Byron left, which is called plays what Bruce arians likes.
Typically when you dig in the tape, everybody kind of
(01:37:34):
has a sweet tooth or have a handful of things
that are their signature concepts in place. Then you go
when you look at Tom Brady and you look at
how Tom Brady has played for two decades in New England.
You pull up the last two years of tape, you
go through that and you try and find out are
there any concepts that are kind of like his pet concepts,
things that we see happen over and over and over again.
(01:37:55):
Because those things that you see pop up repeatedly, those
at things that Tom Brady has it. Man, I really
like these plays. So you look at that and then
and then the final thing is you look at the
skill position guys Godwin and Evans. You're trying and get
a sense of what are their best routes, what are
the things that they do really really well, so you
(01:38:16):
can tell your players as you build an out the
game plan to slow him down. But that's that's how
this this is going to go without preseason games. He's
Bucky Brooks, I'm Jonas Knox. This is Fox Sports Radio.
You can check out the show on the I Heart
Radio app. As we come to you live here from
the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios. All right, coming up next,
we're going to find out from our NFL Insider is
(01:38:36):
there any last minute changes to the upcoming season or
are we really a little over a month away from
kickoff of the NFL season. We'll have that for you
next year on Fox Sports Radio. Oh man, Uh, he's
Bucky Brooks. I'm Jonas Knox. This is Fox Sports Radio.
As we come to you alive here from the Geico
(01:38:57):
Fox Sports Radio Studios. Coming up in about ten minutes
from now here on fs are UM, we will have
in the Gutter with David Gascon. We're gonna go in
the gutter throughout the world of sports. So that's coming
up here about ten minutes from now on Fox Sports Radio.
But when you hear this music, it can only mean
one thing. It is the triumphant return of Adam Kaplan,
(01:39:19):
Fox Sports Radio, NFL Insider, Sirius x M NFL Radio
as well. Adam always kind enough to join us every
single Saturday here on Fox Sports Radio. Adam, Jonas and
Bucky What was behind that entrance music? For you? Here?
To start out the segment. Yeah, so on the when
I'm on on Sundays they play that as in the
(01:39:39):
background as the bumper coming back from break and the
Kolio version he samples Lakeside's Fantastic Voyae. That was a
song from the R and B song from the eighties,
which I'm all enough to remember. Bucky probably is too, so,
uh we're little bit Alden Jonas, so I remember the
song vividly. Yeah, it's a great song. By the way. Really,
(01:39:59):
I was big R and B guy growing up in
the eighties for sure. See see I would have thought
you would have come out to like Pantera or Metallica
or I was never a hairband guy. Never. Um yeah, yeah,
probably rap Beastie Boys eighties and nineties that funk. Yeah,
that's just to put My wife and I saw George
(01:40:20):
Clinton about ten years ago in Philly. Was phenomenal. It
was almost hard to believe that he was still doing it,
but he still he was still doing it, and uh
was I love music, man, so it's really cool. Well,
we love football, Adam Kaplan and uh, I know we
got a delict a little bit of a blow. The
Mac announcing their cancelation of football this season. Some people
(01:40:40):
feeling like that's the first domino to fall, that the
power of five could be next in college football could
be in trouble in general. Um, what sort of impact
if college football is canceled? What sort of impact does
it have on the NFL? From people you've spoken with?
All Right, the first thing that I do want to
tell you on the Big Ten, I think there are
two coaches I'm very friendly with. They not I think
they're gonna have football this season. They don't know that
(01:41:02):
for a fact, just to be clear, but it has
been their suspicion and even worse than over the last
two weeks that they will not be coaching football this
season for the Big Ten for their schools that they
work for. So I know that there's a vote going
on a discussion. It doesn't look very good. And then
we have this report over the last hour from Pro
Football Talk that says if there's no if there's no
(01:41:23):
college football at all this season, that the NFL will
have some games on Saturday. Now, in that report, this
part of it makes a lot of sense. Obviously, the
NFL is not gonna move off Sundays, but they're gonna
have a triple header. They would have it under this scenario,
they would have a triple header on Sundays, excuse me,
on Saturdays, just like they do if you recall on Christmas, uh,
the Christmas Eve or Christmas, they have a triple header.
(01:41:46):
That's what they would do on Saturday during during the
NFL season. That way we get football on Saturdays and Sundays.
And you know that this is this is to me
something very fascinating. You know, we've we've seen Saturday games before,
not not the highest rated games depending on the schedule,
but there's no college football on Saturdays that will be
a monster number come to networks. There's no question about it.
(01:42:09):
You know, Adam, how how long would they have to um?
How much time would they need to change the schedule
because teams we have to know when it comes to
travel and those things like when you changed the slate
to Saturday, because you would pick three games and kind
of move them over logistically. How long would they need
to make this plan happen. Probably probably gonna have to
happen very quickly because the things are we doing it
(01:42:31):
all season? Are we doing it week five? They have
to decide if it's going to be the entire season,
and obviously they're not gonna do anything. They're gonna discuss
it internally and have a have a game plan. But
you're gonna need You're gonna need some time here because
you just talked about it, logistics of it, and obviously
then the other here's the other thing. You know, if
you're a fan, you need to know if you're going
(01:42:52):
to games this season. That's the other thing. We still
don't know yet. Some teams are planning on having no
more than ten or eleven thousand. I still think it's unrealistic,
uh that, um, we're gonna have fans and games. In fact,
the coaches friendly with gosh, I don't know, dozens of
pro coaches, none of them think they're gonna have fans
at games. So this is gonna be very very unique.
(01:43:12):
And right now, all eyes are on college football. There's
no question about it. And I would say obviously within
a week or two, we're gonna know for sure whether
we're gonna have college football this season. Adam Kaplan, Fox
Sports Radio, NFL Insider, Serious x M, NFL Radio. Joining
us here on FSR, Jonas Knox, Bucky Brooks with you,
um and yeah, you mentioned it. You know what sort
of impact fans need to know. I mean, it changes.
(01:43:33):
You know, it's different from flexing a game out, you know,
at least still on the same day. And if all
of a sudden we're moving games forward a day or
back a day, or whatever the case may be, that's
a whole different conversation. But you mentioned the fans aspect
of it, and that's where I wanted to go next
with you. You know, we see the Las Vegas Raiders
just announced all right, no fans and attendance, and then
we see the Green Bay Packers say all right, no
(01:43:54):
fans for the first two games and then we'll reevaluate.
To me, why do we need to make those decisions now?
Why why is it that that the Raiders need to
come out now and just say, all right, well, we'll
have no fans for the stadium. I would be I'm
more in favor of what the Packers have said. I
think the Chiefs have also talked about later in the
year as a possibility, as opposed to just flatly denying
(01:44:16):
fansy opportunity or not allowing fans of stadiums anyways. Right,
because remember, if you look at the Giants Jets situation.
They won't have fans this season. It's because the governor
came out and said that they're they're not going to
let crowds over what it might have been five So
how in the world could you have Why would you
just let five hundred fans? And that's just not fair
because how you're gonna hang into the side who goes
and who doesn't go? Yeah, but the beer lines would
(01:44:38):
be amazing. Yeah yeah, yeah that yeah, And obviously maybe
you can pick your own seat. But the fact the
matter is with fans right now, Uh, it's it's just unrealistic. Yeah,
and you're right there, they should Why do you have
to make a decision now? But the thing that teams
have been pro very proactive, Johnas, I don't know if
you've noticed this. Several teams have already come and said,
(01:45:00):
we're offering your refunds for the season, or you could
credit it that that way, because they actually want to
convince fans if they're a lot to have fans ten
of eleven thousand, they want a lot of people to
opt out. They want that's why they did that early.
By the way, that was that's been going on the
last three or four weeks. Several teams have done this
already because they want these fans stop out because they
know they're not gonna be able to They don't wanna
have to pick and choose who they're they're gonna kick out,
(01:45:21):
So they're ready. They're they're giving that the option, and
fans now are having that option. I know a lot
of people who are have calling online and they've been
telling us through social media that they're taking credit for
next season. You know, it's funny because you're talking about
options and giving people options where obviously the n f
l P and the NFL worked in the opt out
arrangement and we saw that deadline moved up. What has
(01:45:43):
been your reaction when you've talked to coaches in front
office people about the numbers the number of guys that
opted out. Were they surprised by the high number that
elected to sit on the sideline this season? Yeah, it was.
It was sixty six, and then two were added right
after the deadline that that they've put the paperwork and
they just did not make the the waiver wire, which
is at four pm Eastern Monday through Sunday. Yeah, I
(01:46:07):
think that most people didn't think the number would be
is big. Uh. The impact players, they're they're they're a handful.
They're probably a dozen or so players who were either
starters or key back ups. But what you didn't see,
and the biggest fear would be if you lost your
story in quarterback by opting out and that did not happen.
But the worry, and we've talked about this on your
show before, the worry is if there's a breakout in
(01:46:29):
the building. Now I could tell you from talking to
coaches and executives this week though the veterans aren't practicing,
they're just going through condition work. Boy, the protocols are
so good. Most people who have talked to feel like
they would be extremely difficult for a player coach to
get COVID in their building. Now we know what Doug Peterson,
the Eagles head coach, he actually got it outside the
building and the testing picked that up and he has
(01:46:51):
not been clear to return by the way yet, so
that was sort of obviously a surprise. Now the second
head coach, Sean Paynton, was the one earlier back in March.
But I'll say that the protocols have been great and
the players and coaches are doing it as I noted
on your show before the executives and the coaches are
all wearing the censors in their building, so they cannot
(01:47:11):
get within six ft. Adam Kaplan, Fox Sports Radio, NFL Insider,
Sirius x M NFL Radio joining us here on FSR,
Jonas knocks Bucky Brooks of the here. Um, you've covered
the league obviously for a long time. What is the
coverage of the NFL gonna look like? I mean as
far as media being able to cover games, as far
as the presentation. If we're all acknowledging that it's most
(01:47:32):
likely not going to be fans and attendance or very
limited fans, and that means there's going to be an
emphasis on the television viewing aspect of it. What are
the what are we going as far as media members,
you know in the bubble when they go to Orlando
and the NBA, there are certain really strict guidelines. What
is it going to be like for media and how
it's presented to us and we watch on television? Yes,
so Jonas said, let's first start a training camp. So
(01:47:54):
they've got three tiers in the media. Anyone who does
not work for NFL network pretty much is going to
mean or three that is far away from the field.
There also be with scouts. So let's say I go
to a practice with the Ravens, Eagles, Giants, or Jets,
which are probably gonna do once the teams are in
pads on the seventeenth, I'm probably gonna start going to
I'm probably going to a mini tour for about a
week or so. We will be far away from the
(01:48:16):
field and we have to wear masks the entire time. Now,
moving on to the regular season, you're good. The beat
writers will be able to go. There will be some
restrictions on who can go to games, but of course
they'll be in the press box. Now, my understanding is
after the game you won't get access. It will be
probably be through Zoom or Microsoft Teams or something like that.
(01:48:37):
Probably Zoom where you log in, you have a password,
and you get in and you could just like they're
doing now, because the media cannot go to practice right
now and they can't even talk to anyone up close.
So that's the way you're gonna do it. You're gonna
You're gonna probably do it through Zoom. And I do
not believe we're gonna get locker room access after the game.
That's the early word. Nothing's confirmed yet, nothing official. That's
(01:48:58):
been the word with within the media that we're just
not gonna get in front of players and coaches this season.
It's all gonna be done virtually, which look, this is
nothing new. We've been doing this to this offseason. It's
just it's a little bit it's it's gonna be a
little bit harder. But I'll be honest with you, some
of these press conferences that I've been in involved with
have been actually very better organized, and when you're when
it's a free for all with coaches and players. You know, Adam,
(01:49:21):
it's funny that you talked about better organization because I've
also sence that from the press conferences. One thing that
I wanted to touch on. John Harbor talked about this
and I feel like a lot of coaches feel like that.
He was asked about the physicality and the tackling and
how do you get that done in this abbreviated training camp,
particularly when you're trying to evaluate young guys. What have
(01:49:42):
you heard from coaches around the league in terms of
trying to get the young guys evaluated and also trying
to prepare their teams for a regular season that's going
to come really really quickly. So what you're gonna see,
and this is music, you're probably Myers and years bucky
that they're probably gonna hit more. The coaches that I've
talked to, I've talked a bunch of coordinators. Typically in
camp these days, we don't they don't hit very much.
(01:50:02):
Some teams don't hit at all. But they're probably gonna
hit more than any normally, particularly teams that do hit,
they're gonna hit. They're gonna have longer hitting periods, whether
it's typically they're five to seven minutes, now they might
be twelve to fifteen minutes. But they're gonna hit more,
probably on consecutive days, because you have to wrap, you
have to tackle that there was nothing not that you
can tackle. We have very much contact in the off season,
(01:50:25):
but there was no offseason and there will be no
tackle football in the preseason because we don't have one,
and they're gonna do it. It's a it's a great
question and it's something that they have to do. I'll
tell you this, and this has been this is something
I've been checking on. Most reasonable coaches think that the
football early on the season will not be up to snuff.
The tackling is an issue. We had Bill Polling on
(01:50:46):
my show called Inside the Birds this week and Bill
Polling in the Hall of Fame GM said he thinks
the tackling is gonna be really shoddy in the beginning
of the season. In fact, he brought up coming out
of lockout in it wasn't great early on. So that's
yet another issue, folks, that will be taught about probably
as the month progresses again into September. What what what
the regular season is gonna look like is most people
(01:51:07):
have asked me that what September gonna look like? And
what what I'll tell you is what coaches have telled
me probably why not look as good as it will
in late September early October. It's crazy to think that
we're a handful of less than a handful of thursdays
away from the start of the NFL season, like this
is it. It's actually the fact that we're just over
a month away and we're working. It's crazy. That's crazy
(01:51:29):
to think about, but it's it's a good thing for
us start for our football, especially with the news of
a college football not looking so hot. He is Adam Kaplan,
Fox Sports Radio, NFL Insider Serious x M NFL Radio
as well. Get him on Twitter. Always a good follow
on Twitter. It is at Kaplan NFL Adam always appreciate it, man,
(01:51:49):
Thanks so much. We'll do it again next week. Sounds good, guys. Thanks.
Jonas Knocks Bucky Brooks here on Fox Sports Radio. Coming
up next we will have the Gutter and we will
go into the gutter with the great David Gascon. That's
next year on fs ARE. But for all the latest
from around the world of sports. Hey, what do you
know the cash bad David gascont caps nails man. He's good,
(01:52:10):
is very good. I think the one silver lining if
there's no college football seasons, we get to do away
with an embarrassing segment on your show and just have
capping on twice during your four hour block. I agree
at this point. I agree. Wow, I really enjoyed the
Iowa Minute, even though there was no Iowa Hawks stuff
with the way that he's bullied. Ever, there was plenty
(01:52:31):
of Hawk eye stuff. I mean, not a lot of
not a lot of hot we gotta make stuff. They're
not the only team in the Iowa Minute, all right,
A lot of news to get to sorry and updates
going on? What's going on here? Like to like to
get to you know, it's it's important not Luca Garzan
back to back weeks. I mean, if we did a
poll question, what segment do you like better? The Iowa
(01:52:53):
Minute or in the Gutter with David Gascont we did
we did a loser leaves town match or how do
you think that goes? That's tough, now, Iowa, that's tough
because the Gutter is a little more salacious. So you're
gonna have to they have to add something. You're gonna
have to add something to that. Some of my Iowa
Minute stories become you know, kind there's some salacious stories
that you don't want to report on that I will
(01:53:15):
report on since you are a coward. Executions and such. Absolutely, yeah,
there's like the first execution in like seventy five years
in Iowa, and conveniently that was left out of the
Iowa Manute. But don't worry, got it. We got to
talk about the field of dream games right Oh, I
don't know what you're talking about it guys. NBA going
(01:53:38):
on right now. T J. Warren's got eighteen points for
the Pacers and the Little Lakers thirty seven and twenty
eight ballgames. Now in the second quarter winner him and
Jimmy Butler meeting up again. That's all I care. That's
all I want when win, are t J. Warren and
Jimmy Butler going head to add again. That's all I need.
That's the unfortunate thing Portland and the like Clippers. You're
mentioned some of the tweets fired up by Amy and Lillard.
(01:54:01):
They don't play again for the rest of the regular season,
so we would need those two cats locking up in
the Western Conference finals. I mean, and I know Jimmy,
Oh God, Monday, yeah, Monday. They're supposed to play on Monday.
And I know Jimmy Butler has been banged up. But
but Monday, Pacers heat, the Pacers heat. I wonder, I
(01:54:24):
wonder Jimmy Butler's bow and kisses again. Oh man. T J. Warren,
he's been playing out of his mind since since he've
gotten the bubble. But jim Jimmy Butler doesn't mess around, no,
sir um. The one other game that's going on right now,
it's a good one. Double overtime Denver and Utah Nuggets
lead one to one nine. Donovan Mitchell was a hero
(01:54:45):
at least in the regulation tight it with less than
the second to play, and then appear to have wanted
in overtime to put the Jazz up by two, but
Nicole Yokich with less than three seconds ago a little
baseline runner u hide the ball. Games another and double
overtown with Denver having a three point advantage. That's it
for now. Later on Tonight, Bucks and Mavericks Sun's in
(01:55:07):
a heat Major League Baseball scene, Aaron Judge with a
home run, so Gian Carlos Stanton Yankees took Game one
from the Raise eight to four. On the ice, Vegas
Golden Ninths take the top spot in the Western Conference.
They just beat the Colorado Avalanche overtime for three fellas.
Back to you guys in ten seconds. First word for makeup.

(01:55:50):
coming up in about five minutes from now. Jonas Knocks
Bucky Brooks here on Fox Sports Radio and you can
listen to the show on the I Heart Radio app.
All right, so we are going into the gutter, into
the gutter around the world of sports and beyond. Don't
go anywhere. It's yours next on Fox Sports Radio. Get
your mind out of the gunner. He's Bucky Brooks, I'm
Jonas Knocks. This is Fox Sports Radio. You can check
(01:56:12):
out the show on the I Heart Radio app. We
will have in the Gutter with David Gascon coming up
here in just a couple of moments. Also, top of
next hour, the very latest on college football from one
of the top insiders in all the land. He gives
you his thoughts on the outlook of the Power Five
(01:56:34):
based on the cancelation of the MAC and the football
season in that conference. So we'll have that four year
coming up a little over ten minutes from now. You
want to let you know we are company alive from
the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios where it's easy to say.
fIF more on car insurance with Geico, go to Geico
dot com call eight seven Auto. The only hard part
figuring out which way is easier. Right now, it's time
(01:56:56):
for this. Get your mind out of the gunner? Did
you news heights? The best stories Flash in the Gutter
with David gag All Right here he is the gas
man himself, David Gascott. What's happening, David Man? You know,
Adam Calvin's pretty loyal. He listens to your show even
when he's off the air. He just twittered out a
(01:57:18):
couple of emojis. It was a pick axe and a hawkeye.
Appreciate that, Adam. Sounds like fake news to me, guys.
Let's go to the state of Florida. Um, Florida man
strikes again. An intoxicated man who's uh forty seven years
(01:57:42):
of age allegedly spat on a child's face a few
days ago and just said in quote, you know you
have coronavirus end quote gross it's you ever see that
video of that lady, that whack job in the s
It's like in a walmart to where she's going around
(01:58:02):
like spraying COVID on things. Yeah, like like she's using
it like it's holy water, and she's like dousing items
in the store with it, Like what, what would prompt
you to do that? What's the point? No, Well, the
worst part is these guys were in a restaurant. The
man and a little child. UM went into a restaurant,
told the boy who was actually wearing a mask it
wasn't because of that, told him to take off his mask,
(01:58:25):
and then asked him if he could. He asked him
if he could shake his hand. As soon as he
was done with that, he grabbed his arm and then
spat in his face. Pizza work. Where was this that Florida?
They said, Iowa. That worse than that. Um, this is
something people in Iowa might like. Um, Reese McGuire, you know,
(01:58:47):
Reese McGuire is right, kind of yeah, she was. She
was in a bunch of movies on alright. So Reese
McGuire is, Uh, Reese McGuire is like the second Coming.
Don't blame me. Reese McGuire is like the second coming
of a of a Qua Com security guard. McGuire was
(01:59:12):
a few months ago. Um, pleasure in himself is that
the guy from the it was the Alue Jays careful.
So Chicago's Hockey Tube. Yea past tense you know, Um
I will you know a team name in the past tense, Um,
(01:59:32):
I will say. Yeah. So he was the guy who was, um,
you know, shuffle in his own cards. Yeah, so to speak,
Yeah right, Um, guys, well back then he was fine
for what he was doing at a publicly apologize. Well,
the Atlanta Braves that trolled him a few days ago
when he came up to bat. You know, obviously when
(01:59:53):
you're the home team, you get your walk up music.
They played Michael Jackson's beat it when he came to
a dish. It's pretty damn good. It's pretty good, right,
But that's one of those things. And again that's another
one of those stories that because of how nuts is
(02:00:14):
and I probably shouldn't use nuts in this in this story,
but I mean, I'm just it's like the UFOs, they
admit the UFOs are real. It gets zero coverage because
of everything else going on. This guy is doing a
little two ball corner pocket gets popped for it, and
(02:00:37):
it gets like barely any coverage at all. But good
for the Braves for reading some of the headlines and
coming out with Michael Jackson's beat it for when that's good?
Is at kid to touch him again? Jeez, guys, guys
(02:00:57):
in the guys here California, San Francisco is doing some
special things right now. They got a Japanese restaurant that's
highly regarded for their their cuisine. Uh, for the low
price of two dollars per dinner, you can actually sit
outside and when these plastic domes and the purpose of
these domes for the Japanese restaurant is to shield their
(02:01:19):
patrons from the homeless people. Oh god, you know, I mean,
here's an idea. How progressive are we? Yeah, here's an idea.
Why don't we save some of that money and just
eat at home if you're if you're not worried about
being around the homeless, go eat in a home, all right?
(02:01:40):
So you know what are we doing here? Aren't there
in there better ways to spend our money? You know,
like that guy who was you know, looking for some
spare change, trying to find it, trying to find a
skin change. I mean, better things to do? Right? So,
what is the latest with college football moving forward? We
(02:02:04):
will get an answer somewhat somewhat of an answer here
on Fox Sports Radio we're doing our best. We're trying
to get to the bottom of this. There's all sorts
of reports that are out there, but we will have
that for you here coming up in just a couple
of moments. That guy right, there's Bucky Brooks. I'm Jonas Knox.
This is Fox Sports Radio. You can check out the
show on the I Heart Radio app and on all
(02:02:26):
of our Fox Sports Radio affiliates. Wherever you are taking
part in the program, we always appreciate a few minutes
of your time as you come to you alive here
on a beautiful Saturday from the Geico Fox Sports Radio studios,
where fifteen minutes could save you fifteen cent or more
on car insurance. Visit Geico dot com for a free
rate quote. So, um, Bucky Brooks, I'm not trying to,
(02:02:51):
you know, start any problems here. It's not what I
want to do. I would just simply like to point
out that three weeks from now, we were hoppsed to
have what was routinely mocked in the world of sports
as Week zero. Right, it was Week zero of college football,
and it was basically a shot at some of the
(02:03:12):
schools that I like, like a Utah State or Hawaii
or somebody like that. You know, some of these other
schools in the in the the Mountain West, or the
Big Sky, some of these schools that like to play
these week zero games. Many people said, forget about them,
Let's get onto week one during Labor Day weekend. That's
really when college football starts. Where all those people now,
(02:03:35):
I bet they'd kill to be able to preview Week
zero in college football. But unfortunately, we should be three
weeks away from that happening. And as a stands right now,
it looks like we may not have any college football
at all. Whatsoever? I mean you mean, I mean so
down and Debbie Downer about just saying like just there's
(02:03:56):
a couple of converses about have bowed out, have moved
the thing? Look, I want you to flip it and
think of it this way. We may have football year round.
How about that? How about think about this. We may
have the Power File go in the fall, we will
have the IVY League and some of the smallest schools
go in the spring. So we're going to have year
round football. This is it should be cost for celebration,
(02:04:19):
not this sadness that you bring in this that that
sounds like something a guy who misses the Ladies Anniversary
says to try and recover. He says, well, yeah, I
knew in the anniversary was, but I wanted you to
know on more than just our anniversary date how special
you are. Come on, I mean, I knew yesterday was
Valentine's Day, but don't worry about it. I wanted you
(02:04:40):
to have your day all alone. I wanted you to
have the February fifteenth holiday, not just February four. It
looks I am I am going to be because I
refused to just to give up my instrument, and as
I said earlier, I'm going to be one of the
band members on the Titanic. I'm gonna keep playing until
we have official word that it is a done deal.
But the MAC did make a statement earlier today. Um
(02:05:03):
they announced that there will not be football this fall,
and I think people looked at that as sort of okay, well,
they're the biggest conference thus far that has decided that
that they don't want to have a football season. Now
we're hearing words that are hearing stories that the Big
Ten is getting together, and they seem like they could
be the next likely candidate to want to wipe out
(02:05:24):
football in the fall. Earlier in the show, we actually
caught up with Bruce Feldman, college football insider and reporter,
and we asked him, based on the news out of
the MAC, what's next and what's the likelihood of a
college football season happening in the fall. There's definitely concerned.
I don't know that any decision at this point on
the Power five level has been made. I don't think
that the SEC, the Big Twelve, the A C C.
(02:05:49):
You know, right now, I don't think those leagues are saying, Okay,
the MAC is shut down, so we're going to follow suit.
I think there are serious conversations. From what I've heard
in the Big ten, I don't know that any just
vision on that front has been made. And keep in mind,
these are decisions made by the college presidents based on
the advice of athletic directors. But you know, I think
right now, the people I had talked to earlier in
(02:06:10):
the day and the Power of five, it felt like, Okay,
we're going to see how this week plays out. And
I mean, right now, I think there's there's real concern
about what happens when the regular students come back on
campus and how how much can you manage that because
a lot of schools felt like they're doing a pretty
good job with this when they're when the players are
in the building. It's what happens when they leave. And
(02:06:32):
that was Bruce Feldman, College Football and Insider and reporter
earlier in the show. And I just look, I know
that we're trying to figure out what things are going
to be like and how we're going to get this
all done. I'm not a fan of pushing it to
the spring. If it has to happen, it has to happen.
But I'm still hopeful we are going to have college
football on the fall. The fact that the MAC you know,
(02:06:54):
decided they didn't want to do it, I don't think
it's a, you know, just the end all be all
indicator that we're not gonna have college football, But I just,
I mean, it's really late in the game now, so
as every day passes, it feels like a decision is
most likely going to be made one way or the
other in the next coming days. That that's just my
(02:07:15):
gut feeling based on all the stuff that we've seen
thus far. Yeah, no, it's it's it's been crazy, um
it hasn't gone according to script. Because many of us
expected things to kind of subside by this point in
time and we will be able to kind of have
a reasonable expectation of the football that we will see
in the fall. It hasn't gone according to script, and
so it appears that we will see some of the
(02:07:36):
bigger conferences to a sec, the SEC, the Big Twelve,
even the Pack twelve appears to be in line to go.
But we just don't know. And when you get the
news of look, we've heard the MAC come out. We
heard Yukon earlier this week talked about canceling their season. Um,
we get a little discouraged when you hear some of
those things, But I think you have to be cautiously
(02:07:58):
optimistic that football will be played. But a lot of
it depends on not only what the student athletes are doing,
but what everyone around them. Are they masking up, are
they taking the proper precautions that are adhering to some
of the distancing measures that have been outlined. If if
everyone kind of jumps on board, then we all can
(02:08:18):
get the college football that we want to see. But
if not, it's gonna be hard for this to play
out Bruce Feltman also talked about, you know, one other
aspect in all of this, and it was kind of
an interesting um article that he had done for The
Athletic in which he had talked to Montana States head
coach Jeff Choke about the handling of this and how
as they've been kicking the can down the road, these
(02:08:39):
smaller conference schools are only now finding out last minute,
Oh yes, so we're just not going to play in
the fall, when the reality was these are decisions that
should have been taking care of a long time ago,
so they didn't find out at the last minute, and
and the point being they were basically steered by the
power five. Bruce Feltman talked about that as well. I
think they felt like they got boxed into a corner
(02:09:01):
and there's basically the end. The the top of the
food change just said, you know what, sorry, you know,
this is the way it's got to be. It's all
about our survival and it's all about our bottom line.
I think, you know, there's a handful of coaches I've
heard from who are on the lower divisions and an
fcs who also feel like, hey, you know what, you
(02:09:21):
guys can't play football. You can't afford it, but we
don't mind. We'll take some of your best players because
they know they that's the only chance they may have
to play. And who knows, two weeks from now there
there may not be any of these guys playing. We
don't know. But I think it was just things that
have clearly reached a boiling point within the college athletics
(02:09:42):
structure right now, and I think that we're going to
be seeing the fallout of this for a while. I mean,
if anybody thought that the Power Five and the Group
of Five and the FCS and all of them were
just going to work together because they were all under
the umbrella of the n C, A A, it just
doesn't work that way. There's no Like we saw what
(02:10:02):
happen with the A, C, C and UH and the SEC.
The a SEC rolled out their schedule, they grab Notre
Dame and almost painted the SEC into a corner, and
the SEC just said, Okay, we're not gonna be your
non nonconference opponent. We're just gonna go ahead and schedule
games against ourselves. So nobody's really working together in any
of this. And while I feel bad for those smaller
(02:10:23):
schools that you know, it really is steered by the
Power five. UM, I get it, because this is about business,
which is why I'm still somewhat hopeful that because of
the money involved, that we are still going to get
some some once in college football this season. Oh absolutely,
we will get some kind of college football. UM. I'm
curious to see what this looks like, and I'm curious
(02:10:45):
to see it. Let's just say everything is okay, like
the guidelines, the pandemic and the numbers go down, and
we believe that the student athletes can be protected. Um,
I'm curious to see what this looks like with all
of the conference only scheduling because US for years, JONAS
has always been a thing a you guys need to
play more conference games and not a level of uniformity
(02:11:06):
in terms of the way these conferences operate. A CEC teams,
you're playing nine games, SEC you're playing seven or eight
games less. Let's try and have a standard where everyone
plays a minimum amount of conference games so we can
make these determinations on who deserves to be in the
college football playoff. Well, this year we will actually get
(02:11:27):
a chance to see these teams play each other, and
I think that will make for some interesting conversations if
we do have a college football playoff and how they
do determine which four teams are uh elected to be
in that playoff format and those things. So I really
want to see how this plays out. Look, I hope
(02:11:48):
everything is taken care of, But the football part of
this conversation is what I really would like to focus
on because I think it would be unlike anything that
we have seen in recent years. And so you're thinking,
if we do have football, are you talking about just
in the fall? Are you talking about just in the fall?
Just in the fall? Because I know that they've talked
about potentially maybe having the FCS playoffs and and some
of those things and how they could work that stuff
(02:12:09):
out or whatever. But just in the fall, if just
the power five schools go, what does the college football
playoff look like? Do we have these conference title games?
And I think most have said no, they're gonna pay
a full slate in the winner. Uh, the guy who
sits at the team assists at the top of the
mountain at the end of the regular season like that
who was crowned the champion. But now how the outsiders
(02:12:31):
look at the five conferences and say these are the
four best teams. I'm curious to see about them. Yeah,
and look, I've been completely against an eight team playoff
in college football. I just I don't I don't think
it's necessary and I don't think it's realistic. But we've seen, Look,
the NHL modified what their playoff format was gonna look like.
We know what Major League Baseball has done. They've added
(02:12:51):
games in the playoffs. You know what the NBA is
doing and where they pretty much you know, and now,
on second second thought, when they see how Zion and
the Pelicans look, maybe they shouldn't have manipulated the entire
format so they could try and get him into the postseason.
But you've seen every other sport do it. So let's
have that conversation. What could college football do? And I
(02:13:11):
know this is just us, you know, throwing stuff together
on the back of a napkin, But and and these
are conversations that would go to separate committees and all
that that that make this stuff up. But what could
a college football playoff look like this year? If you've
got just the Power five because you're gonna have a
conference winner, so you figure that would be five automatics
(02:13:31):
right there, having in three at large. I think that's
the easiest way to do it. Five five, all the
champions win, and then you have three at large that
you can put in there, because I think what that
does is it enables you to put a let's put
two SEC teams in UM and then make it a no,
no more than two teams per conference. I think Gota
(02:13:53):
gotta put some restricts is in. So now let's take
the three best teams out of that, because let's just
say that the pack twelve not as strong as some
of those other things, like you don't want to make
it whereas like five and one or or whatever that is,
you know, to get someone in. I think if you
put three at Lawger's teams, it enables you to really populate,
to feel with the the eight best teams in college
(02:14:14):
football and so at large meaning the top three teams
of the non conference winners in the Power five. Okay, now,
what if if for somebody and and this is just
you know, hypothetically speaking and just playing Devil's advocate here,
because I would totally be on board with that, especially
if we could get it in the fall. But what
if somebody said, all right, well, you're trying to you know,
(02:14:35):
we're trying to play less games and be around less people,
So if we're gonna play more games in the college
football playoff, it doesn't make sense. What if they did
something like this out of the Power five? You take
the top six teams, The first two teams get a
bye week, all right, So they get a bye and
then you have your your four team matchup amongst the
(02:14:55):
team's three through six in college football. And I don't
know how we would do that. Would we vote on it?
Would we Would it be that sort of a discussion? Um?
I think for the interest of the sport, that would
be the best thing, because I think it's a conversation.
It's a normalcy. We're used to doing that. You know,
why is this team ranked? Heer? Why is that team
ranked there? If we were to do something like that, man,
(02:15:18):
I think it could work. And here's the other aspect
of it. You're talking about all the success the NBA
has had in a bubble. You could easily do this
in a bubble. You could have these teams play in
a centralized location and make it work to where they're
not going to be away from their family for weeks
and weeks and weeks it would just be for maybe
two or three weeks tops, and it would be almost
(02:15:40):
a mini n c A tournament basketball field. I think
that could actually work in college football if you really
wanted to have a playoff, extend it and make it
just power five teams. You know, I think you could
do that. Um, you know, I know. You put six teams,
six teams, eight teams. It doesn't matter. Like this deal,
it takes three weeks to play it off. I think
the difference is, Um, you can't have the exaggerated layoffs
(02:16:01):
in between. I think you have to treat it like
after you have two weeks to separate from the regular
season to the beginning of the playoff. I think you
have to play those three weeks back to back to back. Um,
you do it like that. I think it can happen.
I think it would work. I think, Um, it's all
it's all about the TV thing anyway. I think the
TV you pick a couple of different sites to be
(02:16:22):
able to get these games played. And if you think
about the major Bowl games, the sites that we talk about.
We can talk about playing in Atlanta because of that stadium,
We can talk about Dallas because of the Miami country,
and then uh yeah, either Miami or l A like,
however you choose to do those things. I think you
can hold double headers in one stadium back to back
(02:16:43):
as opposed to going all around. Just put those four
teams for the weekend in Dallas, let them play the
game sorted out in the next week, go to Atlanta
or Miami or wherever you want to do it. I
think that is the best way to be able to
get that done. Okay, see you think double headers in
the same steadius the same state. Are we talking same day? Yeah?
Why not? I mean if you think about it, like,
(02:17:06):
this is what they do in high school. Um, like,
why wouldn't you be able to do that? So if
you play one game because you want to get the
prime time stuff. So if we play at four o'clock
and then follow it up with the eight o'clock game,
I mean, I think people with you know, I don't.
I think from a logistics standpoint, is better to house
everybody at one location as opposed to having everybody randomly everywhere.
(02:17:28):
That's a lot of cost if you have multiple stadiums
going the same day. I mean, where are we thinking
about doing this? I mean because basically Bucky Brooks and
I are redesigning college football's playoffs. You guys are welcome.
All everybody else there likes to remind you how bad
things are. We're sitting here coming up with solutions. We're
not bitching and moaning. So so where do we want
to do this? Do you want to do it in Vegas?
(02:17:49):
I mean, if you want to do it, and you're
not going to have fans there, So if you want
to if you want to break in that that Raiders stadium, why,
I mean why not? I mean the only reason I
mentioned those Affermans spoties because you know that they already
have deals in place. You know that already have deals
in place. Whatever their rotation is, and it may be
the normal rotation, because I don't know where the championship
(02:18:11):
game was supposed to be played this year, But New
Orleans is always in the conversation, Um, Atlanta always typically
has something we know down in Miami. Whatever stadiums you
want to pick, but I think if you essentially localize
them and you change them each week, um, I think
it would be good. And we're not gonna have fans anyway. Yeah,
and you would need and if you want to do
(02:18:32):
back to backs or double headers. You would need it
to be indoors because you can't play on a torn
up turf. I mean Jesus, like the Steelers have played
games on a Sunday when they had a high school
football championship too, I mean bad. It looks like you
know the part on uh Batman were bags up the stadium.
It looks terrible, it looks it looks like a chilly
(02:18:53):
cook off for a horse race. It's awful. Um. But
but if you did it indoors, you could absolutely do that.
You could have a double header and back to back.
And also to your point, because I was thinking, I
was thinking this, we see the extended layoff between the
end of the regular season and the college football playoff.
It's like, you know, a month or something like that,
and so it's good and in thinking that way, if okay, well,
(02:19:15):
if somebody gets coronavirus, you would assume that would be
enough time for them, you know, to test negative and
be healthy and ready to play. But I actually think
your point makes more sense in that do it in
a three week span, because the idea of trying to
keep a college kid quarantined for six weeks is pretty
much about the most impossible thing on the planet. But
(02:19:35):
you can do it in three weeks. Three weeks is doable.
To try and space it out to six weeks is
not so doable. So I think it does make make
some sense in that regard. Also, yeah, I think I think,
may say, I think would be a lot of fun.
I think there'll be a lot of interest. And I
mean it, since we're changing up everything, like why not
why not use the pandemic to kind of get college
football the way that we want it. Absolutely I agree,
(02:19:56):
So you're welcome. Everybody. Tell the doom and gloom is
to kiss our dudes. We're coming up with solutions here
for college football. That's what we do here, all right.
Bucky Brooks Jonas knocks here on Fox Sports Radio from
the Getico Fox Sports Radio Studios. Coming up next, there
is a quarterback in the NFL um who found himself
in a little bit of a controversy here this week.
(02:20:18):
Find out who we're talking about here on fs are.
That guy's Bucky Brooks. I'm Jonas Knox. This is Fox
Sports Radio. You can check out the show on the
I Heart Radio app. Uh coming up in we'll call
it a little over five minutes from now here on
Fox Sports Radio, we will have another edition of the
Scraps Things in the world of sports we have not
(02:20:40):
had a chance to get to their yours coming up
again about a little over five minutes from now on
Fox Sports Radio. Now, Um, Bucky Brooks, I don't know
if you saw this, but Derek Carr was the latest
athletes slash celebrity caught in a potential uh Twitter scandal
(02:21:00):
a burner account. Uh he Uh, somebody thinks they exposed
Derek Carr of having a burner account, and upon going back,
uh and looking at all of these tweets from said
burner account, all of them are basically Derek Carr defending
Derek Carr at every turn. Uh it's literally at every turn. Uh.
(02:21:22):
This this Twitter account whose name was Jace Frost. Uh.
By the way, doesn't Jace Frost sounds like somebody who
would who you would see on last chance? You don
that sounds like the name of a player on this right.
I saw the first episode the first time. Hey man,
that old lineman who's got like all the kids, that
(02:21:47):
guy's that guy's a maniac like that. That is a
guy who once contact like he's he's looking to to
uh take out whatever frustrations he's got going on at
home out on an opponent. So I've seen one episode
of it. I can't watch like it. Man. I like
it because in the Bay Area is nice. Yeah, I know,
it's one of my favorite shows on Netflix. But Derek
Carr gets caught in this burner account what are we doing?
(02:22:10):
But but it leads to this because this is on
the heels of Derek Carr talking about how he's tired
of feeling disrespected. He's tired of it. And see you
actually wrote about that this week at NFL dot Com
about Derek Carr and the reality of his numbers when
stacked up against other quarterbacks in the NFL. Yeah. I mean, look,
Derek Carr catches a lot of incoming. There are a
(02:22:32):
lot of people who take shots at him, and I
think some of it comes internally. Um. John Gruden is
a tough coach to be the quarterback for He's a driver.
He kind of falls in love with the backup very quickly.
Derek Carr has really put up nice numbers. Last year
I wrote about Derek Carr in the middle of the year.
His numbers were reminiscent of what rich Gannon had done
(02:22:55):
under John Gruten back um in the Earth like late
ninety early two thousand's. And when I look at what
Derek Carr has been able to do without really having
talented playmakers around them, because remember John Gruten quickly got
rid of Amari Cooper. So for a year and a half,
Derek car has not had a number one receiver to
(02:23:15):
target and throw to. He hasn't had a dominant playmaker
guy who can get open versus all coverage. Yes, they
had the emergence of a tight named Darren Waller has
been terrific, But when you look at their wide receiver
corps when Antonio Brown left, they didn't have much of anything.
Now they're go and get him Henry Ruggs. They got
another young player in Brian Edwards who should be a
good one coming from the other South Carolina. And so
(02:23:39):
I would expect Derek Carr to play at a higher level.
But when you compare his numbers to Dak Prescott and
Carson Wentz and Jared Golf and all of those guys
are viewed as franchise quarterbacks internally, not necessarily on the outside,
but all those guys are there. Derek Carr is the
only one whose organization hasn't fully come out and said, look,
there's no controversy. He's our guy, He's that guy for
(02:24:00):
the long term. So I was just stepping up. I
was stepping up and taking taking more from my guy.
And now it does feel like it's it's it's been
an odd fit, just the vibe I've gotten to, where
as you pointed out, it's not like they've really wrapped
open up their arms and wrapped them around Derek Carr.
And then you know, we can say whatever we want
about how great we think Derek Carr is. That's not
(02:24:21):
the point. If they're not totally sold on him, then
you know he's not He's not for long. When it
comes to Las Vegas and the Raiders, and they did
give Marcus Mariota real money, I mean the Marcus. The
Marcus Mariota signing in Las Vegas is really eerily similar
to the Ryan Tannehill signing in Tennessee a year ago,
(02:24:43):
when Marcus Mariota was the starting quarterback. And we know that,
you know, Mike Mayock was really really high on Marcus
Mariota coming out of the draft and You've talked about
this man as a scout. There are some people who,
no matter what happens during a player's care rear, they
still look at them like that prospect that they had
(02:25:04):
to be, you know, a future pro bowler in the NFL,
even though their career may not have lived up to it.
And I just wonder how real that threat is of
Marcus Mariota at some point being called upon this season
in Las Vegas. I mean, it's a real threat of
Derek Carr finds himself on the sideline because of an
injury and Marcus Mariota goes and plays well. Um, it's
a legitimate threat. Remember, say whatever you want to say
(02:25:25):
about Marcus Mariota, he was a number two overall pick
in the draft. He's a guy who had a lot
of talent. He was a Hosman Trophy winning when he
came in. There are people that raved about his athleticism
in playmaking ability as he do a three quarterback. John
Gruden has always loved to have an athletic quarterback because
not necessarily for the running aspect, but because when you
have an athletic quarterback, it allows you to really open
(02:25:47):
up the playbook. You can do some of the bootleg things.
He can buy time. When the pocket collapses, it gives
you the opportunity for the quarterback to erase some of
your mistakes as a play caller. And so Markus mari
Yoda is fascinating. I know that John Gruden loves reclamation projects,
and so if he can get Marcus Marioda on the
field and develop him to the point where he can
(02:26:09):
play and kind of make us remember why he was
drafted number two, Derek Carr certainly could be vulnerable, especially
if he hasn't played at a high level to the
point that Marcus Mariota goes onto the field. Yeah, so
it's a threat. But if Derek Carr plays the way
that he's played of late, I don't think it would
be much of one. And and by the way, the
(02:26:30):
whole you know idea of well, you know, John Gruden
wants to look at his a reclamation progress man, a project. Listen,
Egos are real in the NFL, John Gruden and I
love John Gruden. Um like he's got an ego. And
I think you know, you saw how he treated Nathan
Peterman during Hard Knocks. Man, he was his biggest supporter
throughout all of that, and I think part of John
(02:26:51):
Gruden said, look, the Bills just didn't handle him right.
I could fix that guy. I could give him an opportunity. Unfortunately,
for Peterman, who played well at times in the season
a year ago, he suffered the injury late and so
he didn't really get an opportunity to do anything a
year ago. Not that he would have replaced Derek Carr,
but it is that reclamation project. I can make it
work even if those other guys didn't. Man, that's a
(02:27:13):
real thing. And it doesn't It doesn't mean that Marcus
Mariota is a better quarterback than Derek Carr. But it's
just about is he going to be given the opportunity
at some point. And if somebody told me, you can
bet right now Marcus Mariotta starts a game this year
for the Raiders, I'm gonna bet yes, if you give
me the over under of a half, I'm betting yes, Yeah,
I would. I would. I would take that one. I
(02:27:33):
would take that one as well, because there's a fascination
And when you follow a follow the money. They signed
him to significant money two years, seventeen million with incentives
that could push it over thirty million dollars um. They
believe that Marcus Mariota certainly can start, and now it
may be a situation where they view it um like
to do one the Saints view Titty Bridgewater behind Drew
(02:27:54):
Brees that he wanted to have a high end starter
or high end backup behind their starter so they could
continue to play lay at a high level if the
starter was injured. But I do believe that there is
a little bit of a fascination with what could Marcus
Mariota turn out to be. If this I would say
these are the Raiders words. If he got good coaching
(02:28:14):
and people put him into right situation to succeed, He's
Bucky Brooks on Jonas Knocks is his Fox Sports Radio
from the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios. All right, coming
up next, we're going to have the scraps things in
the world of sports. We have not had a chance
to get to there. Yours next year on FS are
for all the latest though from around the world of sports,
ladies and gentlemen, and Tom broke up specifically, who's on
the updates tonight? Gascon is coming up? Yeah, there he
(02:28:38):
is tough. Gas I don't know, man, what's wrong Dave?
Lead talking smack about my magnificent mustache and beard is
not good right now? Why what's he doing? What's Lead doing?
I don't know. I said some of these stories better
not be trash today, and he said, well, your mustache
is trash unbelievable. Now let me ask you this. Do
(02:29:02):
we think Lead the lap could grow a beard? Yeah,
it would be uh, it would be like one of
those busted beards, though it'd be like the ones that
are broken because he can't grow hair in certain spots,
like his cheeks. He'd beat Russ Cole in the later years.
Oh yeah, hey man, I told him he looks like
kind of like Mark Wahlberg and Shooter because he's got
(02:29:23):
his hat on like the long disgusting. Yeah, and now
that that's they're also you know the show Ozark, he
looks like Wyatt. Yeah to laugh. Yeah, it's a really
good call. I mean different different flavors obviously, But what
do you mean by that? What's going on, Dave? What's happening? Well?
I was just asking if you could elaborate with about flavors.
(02:29:47):
The one trip to Magic City and next thing you know,
by the way, by the way, Shannon Sharp's name for
Williams what he called Lemon Pepper Loo Good guys. NBA
going on right now, Lakers and Pacers are tied at
sixty nine apiece. Earlier today, again, that took double overtime
(02:30:09):
to get done. Denver beat Utah one to one, thirty two. NICOLEA.
Yokich had thirty, Donald Mitchell at thirty five, Clippers without
Kawhi Leonard and also Lou Williams sat Paul George in
the fourth quarter. It didn't matter. They still beat the
Pace or the Portland Trailblazers. Excuse me. One seventeen, Demon
Lillard had twenty two points. C J McCollum had twenty nine.
(02:30:31):
In Major League Baseball, Yankees took Game one of a
double header against the Raise eight to four. Game two.
Right now Tampa leads by a score of three to one.
A's three one lead over the Astros and the Tigers
eleven to five on FS one. Leave the Pirates in
that affair. NHL action around Robin Vega School, then that's
the top Sea in the Western Conference. They dropped the
Colorado Avalanche and over time for three guy, it's back
(02:30:54):
to you. Thanks Dave. Jonahs, Knox, buck Hee Brooks here
on Fox Sports Radio Company, you live from the Geico
Fox Sports Radio studios, where it's easy to say more
on car insurance with Geo dot Com or called seven Auto.
The only hard part figuring out which way is easier
coming up in about twelve minutes from now here on
fs ARE we're gonna ask Bucky Brooks about his guy,
(02:31:14):
his guy, his guy making some news and not really
all that good news in the world of sports. We
will have that four year twelve minutes from now on
Fox Sports Radio. Right now, though, it is time for this.
How could you not get to these stories? Are the scraps?
(02:31:37):
And for that we turned it over to the gas
Man himself, Commander David Gascon, to find out what the
hell we've missed so far on the show. Dave, Well,
we gotta circle back to last week. Gascon is coming up?
Gascon is coming up. You were like air traffic control
for for Brady Quinn as he touched down on the
pack twelve man and let it breathe. It was good.
It was good. So I bring that up because of
(02:32:00):
this um. Several reports out there, say one in particular
from the New York times that Pactwell, players say that
they the conferences commissioner, who's Larry Scott, was condescending and
dismissive of them during a call about the coronavirus and
told them that they're hashtag we are united post and
the players Tribune was quote a misguided pr stunt end
(02:32:24):
quote how about that for a shot? I mean, so
where did what did he say that was wrong? Uh?
We beat just tempted busting balls? All right? People are
so sensitive these days, my god. Well, the reason why
like he went into all this is that he invited
(02:32:44):
the players in for a conversation, and there's a report
out there that says that he basically asked them to
come in. The players requested to have lawyers with them,
and Scott reportedly said, this isn't a negotiation, it's a discussion.
I mean, it's just can we just play damn football?
(02:33:05):
Like god, I'm so tired of talking about all these
other outside things that are being brought in. Yeah, but
of all commissioners, the Pack twelve and Larry Scott, come on,
that's that's such a well run conference with like, you know,
tons of revenue. Yeah, long standing TV viewing experience for
so many people. I don't know what do you mean? Day, Yeah,
it's just let me ask you this. If if college
(02:33:27):
football said, are you gotta get rid of one conference
out of the Power five? We can only have four
conferences and the winner of each conference is gonna gonna
be a part of the college football playoff? Who you
guys wanting? Man? I think I want to say the
A C C got to be crazy. So you're don't
get rid of the conference. You can get rid of
(02:33:50):
the conference getting to keep to keep pack, you don't
even have a trigger. That's one team that has been
in the championship game. That's fine four times, like like
that's what we're talking about. It's fine. I mean, I
(02:34:11):
mean I can say, fine, you gotta have you. You're
gonna kick out pack the Pack twelve with USC and
how good are they? They are a name brand program
throughout college football. They've been so just like it's just
like Texas is a name brand program that never wins
anything big Well, the Big twelve is still a good conference.
Let's let's go. Let's go around the room. Everybody on
the show has got to kick out one team. If
(02:34:31):
college football said we can only have four conferences. The
winner of each conference will battle out in a college
football playoff of the Power five. You gotta eliminate one
from the Power five. Let's go around the room, Dave Gascon.
You say the A C C C C. All right? Uh,
Leader Lap executive producer. Who do you say? I was
gonna say A CEC. I'll go wait, wait, you can
(02:34:52):
say the A C C. Say it like if you
want the Iowa Sam, who do you want to kick out?
I'll go with the Pack twelve, sum Bucky Brooks? Who
you want to kick out? Man? There's not even a
good team in the Pac twelves. Here we go, all right,
So I would see anybody and it's two for the
A SEC and two for the Pack twelve, and here
(02:35:15):
we go. It's my vote, all right, which will decide?
Because I love me some SEC. I'm not losing the
Big ten and the Big twelve is just fireworks every
single week. Ladies and gentlemen, the conference that will be
told to kick rocks Pack twelve. You gotta go. You
get your ass out of here. Pack twelve take a
walk and uh go and go have yourself some Cabernet
(02:35:43):
Saubignon at Governor Newsom's winery. Yeah, at governor at Wharton
Newsome's winery, and uh and and have fun with that,
because if we're if we're picking you, Dave, you can't
get rid of Notre Dame and Clemson. You just can't
keep Notre Dame is an independent. They're playing a CC schedule.
(02:36:04):
The boy, oh boy, that's why without they didn't run
to the fact. Without Notre Dame, who do you got?
You got Clemson? That's fine. Yeah, By the way, if
Notre Dame would have run at the Fact twelve, they
might have got undefeated out. They would have There's not
even another good team. And the fact the only team
(02:36:24):
that I mean, I could kind of think about his
Origan maybe who Utah get out? Come on, we got
in fact, if you gave me to two conferences to
get rid, I get rid of Big twelve too. They
don't haven't don't play any defense. My god, we're not
We're not trying to ruin the sport here. I mean,
you just had to pick one. I mean, Jesus, you
(02:36:46):
have to take the Big twelve to The Big twelve
hasn't won a playoff game. They haven't won a game
in the playoffs. I understand it's only been Oklahoma and
it's fireworks every single week. I mean because they played
bad ball. Oh no. But but here's the thing, when
when you look around some of these other colleges that
are just the slow paced, I mean, you need a
little breath of fresh air. And the Big twelve is
(02:37:07):
at breath of fresh air. They're the co of college football.
You know what I love. I love to watch on Saturday.
I love watching Iowa State in Kansas all. Come on, man, man,
that really excites me. And you know what's even better
when when we have when we have the doubleheader and
after that game it's Kansas State in Texas check. I mean,
bust see TV you talked about like like Bucky Brooks
(02:37:33):
just spitting on the cocaine college. I'm just saying, like, man,
I can't wait to see those games. Did a little
TCU Oklahoma State? Yeah that that rivals North Carolina versus
by the way. But you know, but you know when
you talk about the sports you have to bring, you
have to bring to other sports with why you have
(02:37:53):
to bring basketball? Because that can't you because nobody cares
about say kicking Bucky. You can't do that that's like
Alabama basketball saying yeah, we're all in this together. If
you get out of here. If you want to do that,
you'd have to include college baseball and USC and US
are pretty damn good. That's confidence. You're not you're kidding me.
(02:38:15):
Baseball base States taken the Oregon Yes if you say yes,
but you guys do that have no idea about facts
over fielding baseball facts. This is shon us. How can
you allow these guys to do this? Listen, David the Maestro,
you can allow this to happen. The game is over
(02:38:40):
on al right, here's what we're gonna do. Uh that.
He's David Gascing, I'm Bucky Brooks here on Fox Sports
Trading Are We have two things that we need to
get to this very next segment. All right, Number one,
Bucky Brooks's guy. All right, Bucky Brooks's guy. Actually, forget that.
We're gonna talk about Zion Williamson. Enough with that. I'm
(02:39:01):
not going to be a part of it to try
and have Bucky Brooks rip Zion Williamson became so scratch
that and that earlier tease. We're not going to talk
about Zion. We're gonna continue this discussion about eliminating a
conference in college football. Alright, somebody's getting wiped out. They're
getting wiped out on the show, and Dave Gascon's Dave
Gascon is gonna break down his top ten baseball players
(02:39:24):
from USC and u c L. That's next. He's Bucky Brooks.
I'm Jonas Knocks. This is Fox Sports Radio. You can
check out the show on the I Heart Radio app.
Coming up in less than ten minutes from now here
on Fox Sports Radio. Brian no and E from Salam,
(02:39:45):

always a good listen. They will be yours ten minutes
from now. Make sure you check those guys out. For
whatever reason, local programming goes to something else. You can
find Brian on Ony from Salam on the Heart Radio
app just search Fox Sports Radio. UM, So, Bucky Brooks.
A very heated discussion here, Dave Gascon, our national update anchor. UM.
(02:40:08):
If we were to eliminate one conference of the Power five,
and we were to just say, all right, one's got
to go, We're only gonna take four conferences. The winner
of each conference will battle it out in a college
football playoff for safety purposes, Which conference you get rid of?
I mean I voted the PAC twelve. Sam voted the
Pac twelve. You voted the Pack twelve. Dave Gascon got
(02:40:32):
this whole thing rolling because he wants the A C
C out. Can you? I mean, this is dis total
disrespect with what with what Clemson has put together over
the last several years. Disrespect And they've been relevant the
last several years. Before that they weren't. But we're not
talking about before. They were talking about now, of course,
So you're gonna go about now. I mean, that's what
(02:40:54):
we're judging it on. We're not judging about Hey, that's
throughout a conference teen years ago. I mean, and listen,
I gotta go with Bucky on this. I don't think
you get rid of Clemson, even though the conference stinks
as a whole, The conference is brutal as a whole.
Um Clempson has been too good. Yeah, they were too good.
You gotta take him. They've been too good. I'm just
trying to figure out what is the Pack twelve team
(02:41:15):
that should be excited about? What? What is the Pack
twelve team that is in the playoffs every year? You
gotta keep Pack twelve after dark. We don't have to
flip somebody else watch reruns. If that's the case, that
why would you want to have the Big twelve in
because every year when they get to the college football
playoff they get blown out and I can't play. And
you heard me say to get rid of both of them.
And by the way, have about Bunky Brooks in retaliation
(02:41:38):
to Pack twelve after dark saying well, you don't forget
about it. You to put it, you know, find a rerun,
put it on m M A fight on like like
if it's like those moy time fights, reason keeping on.
I mean, we can get k b O on like whatever,
like anything in the nighttime slot. It's it's like those
May Tai fights on CBS Sports Network they have on
(02:41:59):
Saturday nights at like a local casino. What are we
doing here? All right? Dave top Ten in U S
C U C L A Baseball Players of all Time, go,
I'm gonna go Mark McGuire, right all right? And Mark
Bryor Mark yeah one as well. Even with the vitamins,
yeah he was. He didn't take any vitamins when he
(02:42:19):
was there. I mean, can we go like Randy Johnson?
Are we allowed to use Randy Johnson or is that
too big for you to What do you mean? I mean,
I don't know. I was just talking about the vitamins.
Come on, Bucky's taking shots at everybody. Listen, I mean,
all is fair here on Fox Sports Radio, and and
and lesson be learned. If you go after Bucky Brooks
(02:42:43):
and you go after the A C C. You gotta
deal with him afterwards. These are the rules.
