Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. H Yes, living the
drain once again on a fabulous Saturday Harten and Schwartz
with you here together in our Fox Sports Radio studios.
I say together because it's only the second time ever.
Jeff's Jeff's coast to coast. I mean, he's going all

(00:21):
over the map. I'm always steady right here at the
home base. But Jeff, it's always great to have you
hanging out here. I'm glad to be here. The weather
is incredible, It's got me back's in California. There's not
allowed traffic yet, which has been great. And yeah, we
took the kids the beach this morning. We walked around.
We showed him Santa Lanka Beach or people working out
playing volleyball. There's a little you know, it's the crazy
people walking around to the pier. Was great. So and

(00:42):
I talked about sports with you for two hours. Uh.
And we have a lot to talk about today, by
the way. The thing about Jeff, as we've mentioned many
times if you've been listening to our Saturday show, is
that Jeff is very much engaged in the gambling aspect
of sports, something that has grown and grown and grown
and growing and growing, and you know it's I've I've
talked about this, uh a number of times over the

(01:05):
last year, especially as the major sports leagues now. For
years they try to distance themselves from the gambling community,
almost trying to relegate that their significance was next to
zero when we obviously knew otherwise. But now when they realize, wow,
we can make a lot of money out of this,
it's just it is unreal when you look at some

(01:28):
of the contracts that have been signed by these major
sports leagues with gambling establishments. Now they are all in
and I feel like an outsider looking in suddenly, like
if somehow I don't have something on a game, then
I really have no business watching a game. I mean,
think about this, and I I'm not using this as

(01:50):
a negative job. I'm just saying, where we are today
in the sports world, what percentage of people that you
know have something on games in some form, whether it's
an actual bet, whether it's a fantasy football, some connection
personally with the games. What percentage of people that you

(02:12):
know who follows sports have something personal going on with
just about everything they actually watch in sports? Well, I
have a bunch of degenerate friends. I mean, I think
that a lot of my friends would be waging on games.
I don't know how many people in the country, but
it's a big part of how you watching on You example, yesterday,
um Hawks and Nicks are playing. Okay, I don't have

(02:33):
a rooting interest in that series at all, right, I'm
I'm a Lakers fan. I stay up late night before
to watch Lakers play. I guess late on the West
Coast doesn't really count, but I stayed up to watch
a game. I see, you wouldn't be normally just watching
Trey Young a four Pacific. We got back home from
Carl's Bad and I had bet the Hawks for the

(02:54):
first quarter. So I'm sitting upstairs with quarter first first
quarter with my wife and kids in the room, and
we're just watching the Hawks play the Knicks. And I
told my wife afterwards why we just watched the first
quarter And it was a brutal beat for me. The
Hawks up four with eleven seconds left. The Knicks end
up scoring six points in the last second of that.
I lost that bet. It happens. It happens. You keep

(03:15):
firing away, though, but you know it drew me into
watching that game. Otherwise I probably would not have spent
the time away from my family watching Knicks and and
and Hawks play. There's a college softball game about to
be on. Don't ask why, but I followed college softball,
especially in the Pac twelve. I just tried to find
a wager on Washing Oklahoma, because why not, I'm gonna
watch it we're here, but I couldn't find it. So

(03:36):
it's just fun. It just adds to the enjoyment of
watching sports. I have bet on top all before. I
bet on the women's college basketball w n B A
not all the time, but I've done at all. I mean,
it's just here, sitting here for two hours. We're having
a great time talking and I'll put a little action
on the Washing Huskies maybe today, but I can't find
anyone to take my wager. He's betting softball, folks, He's
bet why didn't you go cornhole Washington? Not that anyone

(03:59):
cares Washington. I think they can win today, so there
their their backs against the wall. Should one yesterday could
have a chance to win? So yeah, I like I
would bet you see like softball tonight. I mean, here's
me about about gambling is obviously you should just wager
the mount. You're you can lose, right, right, right right,
all that right, gambler from the problem, all that. But
but to win, it's really hard to win. We know that, right.

(04:22):
If you're a little about you're doing a good job.
Is if you mostly waged on the sports you cover
all the times. Like I cover the pack twalk. I'm
good at pack to a basketball and good at pack
to a football. I would be imagine i'd be good
at at softball and women's college basketball. I follow as
well on the pack too. Aside from my job, I
don't I wouldn't bet like Alabama Kentucky right like I
would just wager on the things that I know, I

(04:45):
have knowledge. I did not know that you were this
in depth. Should we be spending more time talking about
women's softball? Is this something we really need to do
on this show on Saturday? So you asked me if
I'm wage during I might wait as Oklahoma, all right,
I'm gonna tell you very quickly without elaborating why my

(05:05):
gambling experience ended before you were born. Okay, so this
is going back to Jeff, and I'm really just coming
out of college and my best friend who would eventually
be the best man at my wedding was a bookie.
That's what he did for a lad. And he was
an independent bookie back in the day, right, and he
had a lot of money. He knew how to really

(05:27):
play the game. NCAA basketball tourna. Let's have some fun, right,
fifty bucks a game that was a lot of money
at the time. But you know you're gonna win a
few bucks. First day of the n C turnament better
on six games fifty bucks each, lost all six? Now,
how do you lose six in a row? Right? Every
game is a coin flow. The odds of losing six
in a row. But here's the worst part of it.

(05:47):
Next day I thought, okay, I'll make up for I
bet on five more games. Oh for five, So you
go over eleven? Now, how's that even possible? Right? You
have as much chance of going to eleven or no
as you do in a level. I mean there is
some there is some skill to it. Um, you probably
bet all huge favorites that you minut. No. But I'll
tell you what. I didn't give up that day. How

(06:08):
I gave up. So I'm trying to make it up later. Right,
I've blown by my freaking rent money for two months now,
I got to get the money back. NBA playoff game
Larry Bird and the Celtics going against a pre Jordan's
Bulls team where the Celtics are overwhelming favorites, like a
thirteen point favorite. Right, I'm feeling good. I'm taking the
dog plus thirteen. We go there, I'm taking the Bulls

(06:32):
plus thirteen. In Boston, there are four minutes left in
the game and the Celtics are leading by two. In fact,
the game's basically been even the entire game. About that.
With a little over a minute ago, the point spread
is five, line is thirteen. With a little over a
minute to go, three consecutive three pointers and a missed

(06:56):
dunk at the buzzer by the Bulls that would have covered.
Imagine this, after blowing the entire points spread, they throw
a length of the court passed to an unguarded player
who is standing by himself, and goes up for the
dunk at the buzzer that covers the spread, and it
hits the back of the rim. That's when I determined
you are not cut out for this. You don't have

(07:17):
the mental aptitude to do this. You end it right now.
And I've never looked back. So you started oh and
twelve in your gambling career, Yeah, I did. I mean
I the way I lost that twelfth game just about
that was it. I've um, I like wager on baseball unders,
and um, I lost like ten in a row two
weeks ago. I've recovered from that, right, and I'm back

(07:38):
to winning money on those. But yeah, I mean, it's it. Look,
it takes time to study it and and look, if
you are gonna come on here and go on social
media or call us whatever and say you're you're not
winning gambling and no one wins. Okay, that's why they
build giant towers. But there's ways to do it where
you do it responsibly and you do it to enjoy,
enjoy a game and pull the money on something. Um,

(07:59):
and change the way you watch games. Will tell you
that it makes it more exciting, especially in football, right
you're like cheering at the end is there's a late
fumble and your team picks up and runs it down
and and and you cover the spread. So, um, you
know what it makes. It makes the games more interesting. Alright,
So we got the super regional matchup right now between
Washington and Oklahoma where we are definitely listening. I'm watching today.

(08:21):
We're gonna also watch a little NBA over the course
of the day. We got plenty of NBA news for you,
speaking of it is entered. One thing about the NBA
in particular, just standing staying with the gambling element here, Jeff,
is how incredibly they are with with point spreads. I mean,
NBA games seem to be on the line every game.

(08:43):
I don't that's the one sport I can see, like
Major League Baseball, a lot of times you play under
or over on runs scored in the game, and football
sort of speaks for itself. But they're uncanny in reading
the NBA, which always brings into mine one sport. And
I'm not accusing anyone of anything, Okay, don't don't overplay this,

(09:06):
but when you see how certain games play out in
the NBA, were always seems to come back to the line. Jeff,
you know, basketball is the most fixable game. You know
that easily because you have so few players on the court.
And you know, Tim doneghe would still be an official
if an outside investigation hadn't uncovered what he was doing,

(09:28):
and he was playing over under. This is basically what
he was doing calling excessive fouls or whatever to cover.
He wasn't betting one team against the other. He was
just looking for total points of the game. And he
got away for the years, would probably still be getting
away with it. It does, It does make you think
about the NBA because it's so it's your point, it's
very manipulatable from the referees perspective. If not, you look

(09:50):
the players, and this is people worry about waging. There's
gonna be games fixed. Guys. There's not enough money you
can pay Jimmy Butler right now, right as they're watching
the heat in the Bucks play, who's on the court
right now. You couldn't pay enough money to fix the game,
right he makes enough money, he's not has no money.
He needs to fix the game. You know, you you're,
you're you're not paying the seventh guy either, because they
don't have enough you know, time on the court to

(10:10):
fix the game. The referees can do it. And and
the easy way to make that happen is in the NBA.
To your point, you call more foulsy called less fouls,
and you manipulate the total. But the reason why, you know,
the sharps get the number right, and the people that
I guess the bookmakers, just because they've done it for
so many years. They have algorithms and they have ways
to set the to set the number. And also when
you get in the playoffs like this and there's less games,

(10:32):
the numbers just become better because they have you know,
the only focus is making a total for you know,
our side now for the something's four NBA games today,
so you know, that's why it ends up kind of
hitting the number. And look, it's you might not like gambling,
but the last you know, this spread I thing today
in the Bucks game, he came with somewhere like five.
I think I gotta look, I don't wait to this game.
As we go down the stretch of this game, it

(10:53):
would be fun to see whether or not, you know,
if there's a backdoor cover here or or the buckshe
enough foul shots to cover at the end. Are an
incentive here for Miami to extend this series or they
just need to get off the court. I mean, when
you when you're on betting on a team, even on
their home court down three? Oh, are they really incentivised
to extend the series and go back to Milwaukee. No,

(11:14):
they're not incentivised for it. It's about pride obviously, right,
So it's a matter of figuring out if you're gonna
wage during this game and explained pride. I mean again,
it depends on on which team it is and which
player it is. And also this is where kind of
live wagering I think is valuable because of this game
gets out of hand in the fourth quarter. To your point,

(11:34):
the Heat are gonna give up. You could find even
a spot to take the Bucks over ten, eleven, twelve
points because this game will get the twenty points in
the end. Right is is Miami just gives up and
it's it's a twelve point lead now with two minutes
left and third quarter. If this again, if it starts
a fourth quarter and the Bucks are up fifteen seventeen points,
the Heat are gonna give up, right, we know that
you know, down three? Oh, but um, I'd stay away

(11:56):
from this game, like I said, And the Bucks have
dominated this entire series hasn't even been close. Um. And
this was a series last year where I was sitting
here with Katino Mobile and he predicted that he's gonna
win the series against Milwaukee because of their physical nature
that Heat were a product of the bubble. I really
believe that, you know, they were one of those teams
that somehow really came together with all the outside distractions, eliminated,

(12:19):
got themselves in the finals. Those days are gone, in fact,
speaking of those days are gone. On the other side,
I want to get into this, Jeff, as we are
now all of a sudden finding ourselves more and more
fans getting back into the arenas. But what happened to
fan behavior? Things have gotten out of control. Is it
just because fans are overly excited to be back in

(12:41):
the venues or is it a more serious problem that
needs to be addressed. We'll get to that coming up next.
Steve Irvin, Jeff Schwartz. I'm trying to introduce Jeff to
a whole new world here. I had no idea that
you don't. You don't drink wine on a regular basis. No,
my wife knowes that. In the short sorre counsel I

(13:03):
had I had. I know you were in the North
County San Diego areas, and they have some really nice
vineyards out there. You gotta get out there. My dad's
friend has a vineyard, has a vineyard in his backyard,
and I tried the wine and it was the red
wine like a delicious and see, I don't like bitter, right,
and so most of the winter this was delicious. Yeah,

(13:25):
you can get really good wines that are not bitter.
Are they just they've had like a recenting before? But
that's like to sugar. I don't know. I'm just like
not an alcohol person. I was in college and I
pased myself out of that. I never drank. And there's
some there's some liquors I like. I don't like beer.
That's probably why all my buddies drink beer. I'm like,
I'm gonna pass on that. You're gonna pass on you.

(13:45):
I will promise you this this time. It's sort of
an acquired taste, right, I would drink this wine that
I had the other day. Is there a food you
feel like a type of food where you've acquired a
taste over time that maybe when you were younger you
weren't fasting to Brussell sprouts for sure, but I feel
like everyone has has upgraded the Brussel sprout very good.

(14:06):
And I love onions like onion as a kid, I
will eat onions in many different varieties, many different ways. Um. Yeah,
basically just fruits and vegetables, like things that I probably
didn't eat his kid that I need now as far
as like I had sushi as a kid, I had
steak as a kid. I mean, you know what one
thing I'd like, like beef carpost like like tartar, like

(14:26):
raw steaks. I probably didn't eat that for ever. And
then my wife like her steak still moving. So it's
the more kind of you know, like raw center steak
you eat, you know, the more you get used to
eating raw beef and like a beef car pastio. So good. Alright,
so now are we are? We gonna see a lot

(14:47):
of you at here and more? How about more of
you at that? I asked that I would I think
if if job things go well, hopefully more I mean, look,
I'm not sure I would look it would because I
need to know these things because then we'll be properly prepared.
Because as Sam can tell you, I mean, if I
bring back the cycle of Denise, which hook Coatino Mobley,

(15:09):
as you know, into what he asked about you earlier. Yes,
I know how to steve and where are those cookies? Yeah?
All right, well we'll work this out. We'll get a
little more coordinated. Actually, the last night I had a
big dinner party from my son, who's the big NBA
guy speaking of the n b A. I mean, he
lives in Breeze, n b A. He's always doing this

(15:29):
to me. Now you know, here's here's his dad. He's
a Mr. Talk Show guy and he's he's always quizzy
me on NBA players. Where do you go to school?
Where do you go to school? And I'm like, most
of these guys are all one and Dunn's I don't
even remember half their college careers because they were barely there.
So unless they were an All American, I don't know.
But he knows all of those right now. One guy

(15:50):
you know who? Uh? I know where Lebron James went
to college. That would be no college he uh, he
had no college. The Lakers right now, Jeff. They came
up big in Game three. Uh, Anthony Davis had a
huge game. Remember he didn't show up in Game one.
Back to back huge games and games two and three.
And I was talking to Michael Thompson, former Laker player

(16:10):
father Clay and of course longtime analysts for the Lakers,
and I asked him, I said, you know, last year.
They lost the first game against Portlands, won four row,
lost the first game against Houston, won four row. They
lose their first game against Phoenix, they won the next two.
Is this sort of how they operate where they sort
of size up their opposition in game one and then

(16:32):
figure it out and then come back and apply that
over the course of the series. Or is it just
you know, sort of kicking off the russ Because Anthony
Davis Lebron had been out of so many games down
the stretch, he goes, look, everything when it comes to
Lebron James is calculated. He knows how to navigate through
the postseason. There's a reason he's been to the NBA
Finals ten times during the course of his career. So

(16:56):
anybody that's betting against the Lakers, who, by the way,
are trying to be on the lowest seed ever to
win the NBA Championship is really rolling the dice. Because
the Lake Heres have Lebron James, they are still the
team to beat. Now do you believe that? Oh? I do.
And we're gonna see them continue to get better throughout
the playoffs because they're they're all playing together. Now, right,

(17:17):
we saw that Lebron a d and and Shoreder had
not played more than two or three games with Drummond
as well, right and not playing more in two or
three games together. The thing that that has improved the
last two games for them is their defense. Now, Chris
Paul being out definitely has hurt the Suns and they
really haven't found that replacement to kind of dissed the
ball out, spread things out, the leadership on the court.

(17:38):
I don't think. I don't think it matter in the end.
I think the Lakers will still win the series, but
obviously is a huge loss. You hope that that he
can play a little bit better with one extra day
arrest heading into the game tomorrow. But when Lebron has
wanted to end games, he has ended games. He saw
the end of Game two, all right, I'm doing it,
And we saw in the second half of Game three
he played a lot longer than he had any in

(17:58):
the first two games. Really in the third and fourth quarter,
I think he played. He had the traditional star rest
and he played ten minutes a third quarter, sat out
the two minutes, got the rest you know, during the break,
and then played most of the fourth quarter, which hadn't
done in the first two games because he just decided
and Frank Vocal probably said, look, we gotta end this
game now. And you saw the spacing, the passing, the movement.
Just when Lebron wants to barrel into the into the lane,

(18:21):
who's stopping you know him. Here's the difference though, between
let's say Lebron and Michael and Kobe back in the day,
those guys were not going to relinquish the basketball. They
just were not going to relinquish the basketball. I always
get the feeling with Lebron that the ultimate ending to
a game is him dishing the ball to somebody making
a shot he likes. I mean, if he has to,

(18:43):
he will proven that he can do that. Of course
he can't. He could do that every game. Like you
just said, if he's going to the hoop, who's stopping him?
Nobody's gonna stop so. But where Lebron has a different
mentality than Michael and Kobe is that he still has
he has more of a man Magic Johnson mentality. He's
still a playmaker. So yes, physically I can dominate, I

(19:06):
can get the big shot, but the ultimate to him
is I get a hot Anthony Davis or suddenly I
can rely on Shrewder to make a shot or something
like that, where at the end of the game, the
pressure isn't all on me. I can depend on somebody
else to knock down that shot, and if I get
the assist, all the better. I think Also for him,
he's one of the best athletes we've seen at and

(19:28):
I don't say conserving energy, but knowing how to use
his body in a game. And so I think he
realizes that, Look, if I can get k C. Peter shoots,
we saw him yell at him in Game two, shoot
the ball, right. If I can get someone else to
make a three pointer on this team, which they still
cannot do um, then I can do less and I
can save myself for the end of the fourth quarter

(19:49):
or for a long period of third quarter when because
the entering game three the plus minuses like I think.
I think when when the bras in the court was
plus sixteen for the Lakers, when he's office minus eighteen,
they cannot play because they can't shoot threes without him.
So I even for him, it's about conserving energy for
when he needs to. And then also if he's been
triple teamed, the guy's passing too, is also getting paid

(20:12):
to make a shot and he's got to make a shot.
And we also, look, Jordan did pass the ball to
I mean we we pretend that Jordan never on the game.
I have never seen a player monopolize a basketball in
the fourth corp of the way Michael Jordan did. And
there could be a multi by the way Kobe did that.
I mean Kobe Kobe. This video like one on four.

(20:35):
I used to we I was part of the Lakers
station at the time. I used to introduce him as
ball hog. Bryant's joining us right now. He just laughed,
I mean he laughed on Oh yeah, He's like, oh,
here's bandwagon man. There's bandwagon man. I don't know, he
respected that. Everyone else was, you know, kissing his you
know what all the time, and so I was the

(20:55):
one guy that wasn't all the time. But it was
all good fun and everything else. Yeah, the day after
he scored eighty one points right where the Lakers station.
Here's how I opened up the sham show. All right, wow,
anothery're disappointing to assist night for Brian last night and
my partners were absolutely going one dude, but you sound

(21:18):
like the old guy on Twitter. The old man and
yells of the cloud. When you say, because you know
we saw a dunk this here with Anthon Edwards, I
think who just posterized someone like, oh it's over seven shooting.
We do not care. We are here to see the dunk.
We like seeing the dunk. Um. Look look, look Lebron Um,
he very much is more like magic than he has
ever Kobe or Georgie. And I say this quite often,

(21:39):
I feel very strongly in this. You know, George is
the best player ever. Lebron is the best talent ever,
Like that's not even close. And what he can do
with his body and with his ability stronger, faster. Remember
the first time Steve I saw him in person play Um,
I was lucky enough to say it was a preseason game.
The Heat came to Kansas City to play I think
the thunder and I got to sit was a preseason game.

(22:01):
The basically entire Chiefs team got to go to the
game and I got to sit. I was supposed to
sit behind the basket, but whoever on the Chiefs did
not show up to their seats, so I sat on
the floor at half court. Whoever it probably was like
Alex Smith or something. He had the best in the house.
He didn't show up, so I sat there for three
quarters and watched Lebron play preseason game. I've never been

(22:23):
more in awe of an athlete in person. The way
he moved and even the way he heard, the way
he was breathing on the court, and it just was
so impressive to me. And I think with NBA players
we see him on for you on TV so often,
it's way more physical in person, like they're banging, they're
hitting each other and with it. And I still think

(22:43):
there's some a little bit too much flopping and too
much you know, guys like on the ground too much whatever,
But it's way more physical than you would imagine, and
so Lebron to me, I've always liked Lebron. I'm glads
playing for Lakers. Now I think he gets too much
flak for passing the ball. When guys are open, they're open,
they're open. If you're getting triple teamed, you do do
you gets paid to hit a shot? Two thousand, the
year two thousand, I'm doing my radio show with my

(23:04):
dear friends Sonny McCarroll. Sonny came on and we were
talking about top high school players coming into the college ranks.
All right, I said, all right, so, Sonny, who is
the number one high school player? And he goes, actually
the number one high school players A ninth grader, guys
or what ninth grader? Yeah, I just saw him. He's
this kid out of Akron, Ohio. His name is Lebron James.

(23:27):
I may we may have been the first sports radio
show in the country to actually mentioned Lebron James. Sony
McCarroll saw him as a ninth grader. He had him
work out for he said, less than five minutes and
he said, that's it done. I remember that's how you know.
I'm I'm one year well I'm much younger than older
than Bron, but we were in the same kind of
a youth, sir. You know, I guess I'm not really

(23:48):
you know, we played the same tournament's kind of at
the same time. I remember when he was there playing
on you know, in those eight tournaments they play three
courts at the time, he was playing one of the
other courts and like the crowd like this was like
people over there, no one watching my, my, my athletic
butt on the court. I mean, it was a phenomenon
when he was and what this what it was impressed
me most about Lebron through his entire career because he's

(24:09):
had the spot on him since he's a never screwed up,
never screwed up. He's never been on the people. It's
people talk about. You know, the decision all that that
wasn't the screw up that was. That was a screw
up as far as the Calves fans were concerned. But
you're right, he's not had personal scandals. A family guy,
and that's how he keeps himself in shapes r inter

(24:30):
five days a year. That's how you last, all right.
I don't know. I the critics of the Lebron I mean,
I know he has taken some political stances. They don't
please everyone. I don't I don't care about that. I
don't care about that stuff. People will get so caught
up in that. And and I get to get you
want to have you want your sports me free apologis,
which they never have been. No, it hasn't all right

(24:50):
On the other side, I want to get to the
fans behavior. We sort of skipped over that. We'll get
to that, but right now, let's find out what's trending.
As David Gasco on is in the house and David,
you know, normally amongst the rest of us, physically, you
stand out, right, I mean you're you're big guy, and

(25:11):
you work out and you know, and then like a
guy like Schwartz walks in the building and with all
due respect, I mean he started dwarfs you. You feel
like that. I when I played back in the day,
I used to love playing against guys that were Jeff size,
really yeah, because first of all, they know going into
that that they're going to overpower you obviously just on

(25:33):
size alone. Right, so you gotta do two different things.
You gotta out technique them and you can outsmart them,
all right. So Jeff, let me ask you, when you
were going up it's against a much smaller guy, was
there anything they could do to offset you based on
your size advantage leverage? But but I'm also pounds, so

(25:58):
you can use your leverage on me, but you kind
of have to also be strong, like like like you
might get initial kind of jolt on me. But like
that's why I never played Aaron Donald. He would he
would eat me alive because he's also he's leveraged, plus
he's really strong. He would have destroyed me. He would
have I would have had The coaches would have looked
at me sideways after the game like this, I can
do this job. I'm so glad I never got to

(26:18):
play him. There's only one Aaron Donald because he takes
his shirt off. You're like, I know. The first time
I saw him, I was in person at the Super
Bowl radio row and I asked someone who is that?
And they said it's Aaron Donald. I said, no, it's not, like,
get out of here, that's not Aaron Donald. Have you
ever seen a defense alignment built like that? Any lineman?
He's just a unicorn on a million Yeah, all right,

(26:41):
So what about a guy like Dwight Freeney? Well, the
spin move? Would the spin move got me? Yeah? But
like I mean the size thing, I didn't really mind
playing someone smaller than me. I mean it might have
been I might have to bend my knees a little
bit more. But the spin move is brutal. I mean,
that's the wasn't it from Salama? Buddy from said that

(27:03):
that was his worst night. Where was Freeney? Yeah? Because
that spin move is so good. I mean I've talked
to many guys about the defending that it's so hard
to do it. He's gonne Hall of Famers, like he's
gotten guys to fall in their ass because of that.
Can you imagine it went against Reggi White though. He
would just bully, just knock everybody back the hut move.
So I think the hut move and the spin move

(27:24):
the two hards. The hunt move is really hard because
as a lineman you just don't see it coming. The
spin you could sort of see coming, but you're already
kind of off balance. You could be in good balance
and he could hit you with that hut move and
you just I mean he tossler realance, which is fascinating
because you know, if you're a defensive or a linebacker,
once you get stuck in engagement with a lineman, you're

(27:44):
dead in the water. And so there's that fine line
with Freeny, were you want to proceed like you're to
get engaged and then spin right out of it. Yeah,
he would. He kind of go up the field and
then he would kind of chop his arm, his inside
arm down to try to knock your hands down or
pin your arm, and then he would he's spunny, would
pin his outside his inside elbow kind of on your arms.
You couldn't get your arm in there, and it's been

(28:04):
off all right, So we're gonna line you up against
gascon see how you can do. I said this, when
people try to line up against me, I would hit
him before you even do what happened, Yeah, the other side,
So I have to know that going in. But yeah,
that's uh, yeah, it's always better going up against someone
bigger enough fight, right, I mean it's yeah, you're the underdog,

(28:28):
you have the perceived disadvantage you can take advantage of.
I guess so um speaking of that guy's sizable underdog
today was Miami. They're getting beat right now by twelve
one oh four ninety two is a score. Milwaukee was
plus thirteen in the third quarter. They're looking to pull
away in this thing for the clean sweep. They're actually
five point favorites in this affair, and then we're about
thirty minutes away from opening Tip Hop and Portland's Trailblazers

(28:51):
in the Denver Nuggets. Denver's up in the series two
games to one. Philadelphia, Washington, Tonight, Utah and Memphis as well.
Jazz didn't lose a member of your family and Mark
eating he passes away at the age of sixty four
after a bike accident. Major League Baseball scene. But back
and forth the fair between the Phillies and the Rays.
It's three three Pirates seven nothing of the Rockies. In

(29:11):
game one of a doubleheader, Dodgers activated Cody Bellinger. Will
see if he's in the starting lineup today against the
Sam Francisco Jets. All right, Jeff, On a scale of
of one to ten athletic ability, Uh, how likely would
it have been for you last night to climb the
wall and left field at Dodgers Stadium Albert Poolhole so

(29:35):
that game I could? I could, like if I was
in place at the wall, I could possibly jump up there.
I mean, I was only about getting seven to nine
inches if I was warm on my jump. But I'm
calling off. I think at that wall that the Giants
need that win in the worst way. We had willing
five straight losses the Dodger, especially after last night. The

(29:55):
markt news is sad. We interviewed him on the on
the radio about two months ago during U C. L
As run Um we had him. He was a great interview.
The Mark Eaton story and David, thank you very much.
The marketing story. I was at u c l A
when this Mark Eaton story began. So Mark Eaton was
literally working like as an auto mechanic and somebody saw

(30:16):
this seven foot plus kid and say, do you play basketball?
And he says no, Well that's gonna change. He went
to Cyprus College for a couple of years, and so
what happened was is that he ended up transferring to
U c l A, where he never got off the bench.
They didn't know what to do with him. He couldn't
really play basketball. So the Jazz decided, you know what,

(30:39):
why not. They didn't have just two rounds in those
days then they had like seven rounds in the draft.
So just based on his size, let's take a flyer
on this guy. And so all they said with Eaton was, look,
just stand there with your hands up. If you're underneath
the basket and you learn how to just position your
body and raise your hands, you're gonna block shots. And

(31:03):
he was a two time NBA Defensive Player of the
Year just based on his ability to block shots by
just pretty much standing there and extending his arms up.
There's a video on Twitter. I think actually it's against
Rex Chapman. Rex Timeman tries to dunk on Ett doesn't
even even he doesn't even jump, and he's still he's

(31:23):
seven four with his arms extended. It's all the way
to the who he just he basically grabs the ball
out of Rex's hand and blocks it. Now, they might
call a foul on the guy coming from behind, but
I mean, and I watched, Like I said, we had
him on on my radio show a couple of months
ago to talk about the Bruins run um in the
postseason tournament. I went and watched all his YouTube highlots.
You're right, I mean, offensively, he's not making anything outside

(31:44):
of three feet. But if you're the all time you know,
if you're an NBA Defensive Player of the Year two
years and especially that error right, five teams, five times
all defense, two time Defensive Player of the Year, and
the Jazz were brilliant. They said, look, here's how it's
gonna work. Just stand there and put your arms up.
I'm telling you it's going to work. And by the way,
those are the days before people were casting off from

(32:06):
three point land, so it was a much different game
back in the eighties. So his type of defense when
guys are going to the hoop worked beautifully and you know,
now he couldn't have done that, right, and he have
to learn how to shoot three and get you know,
you know, we see like bull ball a little bit
of that, right, I mean the things he has and
I mean, sorry Taco Fall, the kid from UCF on
the side, go back to Manut Bowl. The I mean,

(32:28):
like Taco Fall, he's not really shooting the ball very well.
He's just in the middle of clocking things up when
they put him in and in those days and much
very different game. I got like Mark Eaton could have
a great cur and he did very sad I still
don't have details about this bike accident and he just
found him there and so we don't know what happened
because it didn't seem to be a contact with a
car anything else. So unfortunately Mark eating has pass at

(32:50):
the age of sixty four, far too young. All right,
I want to get to this crowd thing, because this
was very much in the news and I want to
touch on it here and get more on the other
side because it's been sort of playing in line with
the clock right now. But you know, when we talk
about fans getting back in the arena and it's exciting,
you know, last week we were talking about it the
p G A right, they announced ten thousand. Didn't look

(33:11):
like a lot more than ten thousand people were down
there at Kiwa Island down there like twenty thousand. I
think they just started letting a lot of people in.
But that whole scene at the eighteen Green, where you know,
Phil and Brooks Keeper were fighting for their lives, just
trying to get through. PG admitted they totally screwed up.
That could have been very serious situation when he got

(33:34):
that many people crowded around, but none of them were
merry mask. I mean, we seem to progress in the
Carolina's minutes over there, it's over right, the same thing.
We saw Clippers in Dallas last night, packed arena, saw
the Lakers in Phoenix, packed arena. Here in California, it's
still like coming out here is a little frustrating. Like
I was, do you still people see outdoors wearing masks?

(33:56):
A temperature check at the hotel? And I was like,
I thought we moved past that, right, And you know
we opened up recently in Carolina's um. You know, we
vaccine in North Carolina and the ready open things up.
I'm glad it's opened up and look, I am very
happy to see fans back in the stands like watching
Especially it's most noticeable in playoff hockey. I think like
the fans. I mean, it's been so funny. It's been

(34:17):
a lot of overtime games and you know, the big
goal scores, the crowd going nuts, um, and we saw
the Carolina Hurricanes always do great things with the fans afterwards.
Look the PGA Tour. It's great to see fans back.
I think we're gonna have a renaissance of fan activity
this season. All right, But there is a separation of
the fans in hockey arenas. There's a separation of fans

(34:40):
at football games. There's even a separation of fans at
baseball games, but not in the n b A. Coming up,
the incidents that we've seen in the n b A
spitting dropping things on players. Has this gotten to the
point where the NBA can no longer ignore that there

(35:00):
shouldn't be fans that close to the players. We'll break
that down coming up next May watch Team it You.
What's up? Everyone, It's me three times NFL All Pro

(35:45):
I was just asking Jeff here, we're watching this Milwaukee
Miami game. The Heat are about to get swept out,
down seventeen minutes to go. The lead was fifteen with
two minutes to go, and I asked, Jeff, Okay, I'm
setting the line at fifteen, Hey takeing. Milwaukee said yes,
Now they're up nineteen because their starters are still in
which appears actually as we're talking, they're pulling the starters

(36:06):
out with one minute left, and so I just with
their starters still in there, we're still going to score.
And then Sonali's nineteen o eight to go, so we've
already put down a million dollars on him to cover
a fifteen points spread with two minutes to go, They're
up nineteen with a minute ago. You're feeling good still, Yeah,
because the Heat. What's gonna happen here? And this is
why I like NBA unders especially, I don't know what

(36:28):
it's pretty probably close to total right now. Um is,
Milwaukee will dribble the ball out on both their possessions here,
So it comes down to whether or not the Heat
are gonna go ahead and score a bunch of points. Right,
So you have you figured that Heat have two possessions
minimum here. I feel good about the Yeah, alright, you're
feeling good now up nineteam Milwaukee about to sweep out

(36:48):
the team and eliminate him from the playoffs a year ago.
Jimmy Butler not the player he was a year ago
at this time. All right, So I want to get
to this fan thing. We had the incident where somebody
in New York goes spinning Entree Young spitting, spitting. He
literally you see him lead over and spit on the
back of his arm. You have Russell Westbrook facing the

(37:10):
fans in Philadelphia. Looks like you're gonna win your bed
quite easily here. Uh So, you have the Philly fans
as Westbrook is coming off the court, and this was
sort of a weird situation because there's actually a cover
of the tunnel he was exiting, but there's a crevince,
a little crevice there. And a guy dumped his popcorn
tied to beautifully in Atlanta, right on top of Westbrook,

(37:31):
who had to be restrained. And not only Westbrook, but
other players are calling him out. I don't know. The
NBA and an effort to make money, you know, jamming
people that close right behind the bench on the floor.
Are they too close? Are you just asking for trouble
or what's the deal there? Because look at you. Could
you imagine if you had fans on the sidelines in

(37:52):
an NFL game and they're not on the side I
have been on the court at NBA. Mean, so is
it isn't it? Do you put a barrier up like
hockey has essentially because of the ring? Like I mean, yeah, sure,
but I mean like, I don't know what you would
really do. I guess Look, it shouldn't be up to
the NBA to to make sure that we don't have

(38:16):
a holes come to games and spin on players and
throw a popcorn. I mean they should be banned and definitely,
and they are that they should be banned forever. I think, Um,
you know, we don't come to your work and throw
stuff on you. Yeah, but I mean, how are they
that close? Now again, the popcorn guy wasn't close, but
we obviously have seen incidents involving fans that are that
close to the players. So you think they should be
moved back. I don't think that'snna stop someone from trying

(38:36):
to spin on a player. I mean, how I think
they're gonna try to do it if that's the person
they are. But the fact that he was that close
to him, it gave him the opportunity, of course it did.
But how about I think we should we should? Um,
maybe this is my problem. We should assume the best
in people. It's probably my fault for assuming no one's
gonna spin on a player, because how disrespectful that is. Um,

(38:57):
I think players should get a one time How do
you feel about this? Right? All right? A one time
passed to assault a fan who does something like that.
Like so remember when that then our test went on
the back of the ticket. There's all these like all
these terms of conditions and if one of them says
like what like, you could be assaulted by a player

(39:20):
without without without prosecution. And imagine if the player or
the person spits on Trey Young and he turns around
and just walks do in the face. It would never
happen again, exactly if Russell Westbrook was allowed to just
square off with the guy. So it's on your ticket
and you're putting yourself you can't after if you if

(39:41):
they're only retali and you're the instigator, well no, of
course there's a lot of fine lines because what exactly
is enough to be instigated, but it would stop all
this right. People have a fake toughness about them where
they think they can do something to an athlete and
they know we will not respond because they know, like
you mentioned with what happened with Ron our test, they
that we will get sued, we will go we will

(40:03):
get prosecuted against also, so they know that we're not
going to retaliate. So fans feel that they can get
away with anything they do. Look being not allowed to
go to a basketball game ever again, I mean, I'm sure,
I'm sure, I'm sure dude through the popcorns and you know,
did you ever engage with a fan during a football game,
or ever witnessed players engaging with fans actually when the

(40:25):
game was happening. I mean yeah, we would. We would
talk to some fans every now and especially when you're winning.
You turned around. Remember in Michigan until the seven when
I was with Oregon. Yeah, you talked to you would
talk to fans. Yeah, but like it's words again, words,
It is not enough. No, No, we were just talking
like we just you know, we just cussed. That's yeah. Again,
the verbal stuff I'd have no problem with. You know,

(40:48):
you take it okay, Although again, when the right behind
your bench and they're like screaming in your ear, that's
what I'm saying, maybe back them off a little bit.
By the way, Jeff just one his million, dore bet
Milwaukee one by seventeen. Alright, so there it is, they covered.
I mean, no, here, all right, we got some NFL
news to get to. Where's Julio Jones going? What what

(41:10):
is the real story about Atlanta trading? Julio Jones are
gonna tell you coming up next? Popcorn ready, all right?
Rolling along here on this fabulous Saturday, Hartman and Schwartz.

mix of things we're watching right now. Your little Major

little Interleague play Raise going retro with their devil raised
jerseys like that. NBA playoffs. We've just seen Milwaukee sweep

(41:54):
out the Heat in four consecutive games. Now we're getting
ready for Denver and Portland. Uh, this is a series
right now. Denver leading this series two games to one.
Later on got the Sixers up to oh against the Wizards,
and then Utah and Memphis. Member Memphis pulled an upset
in game one in Utah. Now they go on the
road against Memphis. That series tied up at one game

(42:16):
a piece. A big day in the NBA. We're catching
up on the other two TVs were watching right now.
One has women's softball, which apparently is really important to
Jeff Schwartz. Right now, I'll match up between Oklahoma and
Washington for business purpose as you said you sound I
mean sure. I'm also in a text chain with randomly
and Oklahoma fan of Washington fans, like we're just listening

(42:38):
to talk trash about and then we actually have football on, right. Yeah, look,
I love football. Yeah, but I only have a capacity
to watch the full NFL season, like every game and
then most of coaturtball. Right, So like the spring leagues
to me, great idea, they never worked because the NFL
doesn't back them, but I cannot watch it. Let me

(42:59):
ask you this. I mentioned this quickly here because we
do have some NFL news I want to get to.
But going back to the Alliance of American Football, the
XFL was different because they really wanted to operate on
their own. It may still, but the Alliance of American
Football was sort of making overtures about being a developmental league,
right for the NFL where you're working in cahoots and

(43:20):
you and to me, in some respects, it does make sense, Jeff,
you do have players to fly under the radar. We
know this all the time. We get free agent rookies
that are bypassing the draft that end up becoming key
players in the NFL. Why wouldn't the NFL want to
get involved in the league where there's a little bit
of an understanding, sort of a developmental league. It's off season.

(43:41):
Maybe have a ten weeks season where you can see
some players in action and uncover a few gems along
the way. Why would the NFL be thumbs up on that?
I mean, it's not like money is ever a factor
for the NFL. We know they have a free farm
system ineg. Fotball. I understand that, but still guys fly
under the radar. Sure, but but how many guys in

(44:02):
a spring developmental league you think would make NFL roster
that currently aren't on NFL roster. It's very rare. Now
we've said we saw some guys like the uh is
it p J Daniels the quarterback on the backup now
for the Panthers. So every now and then there are
a couple of guys, But the NFL doesn't view it
as Look we we we talked about us off there

(44:23):
there's not enough NFL quarterbacks. There's not there's not even
enough for the spring. There's not NFL lineman So there's
not enough, Like, there's not enough guys to make it
worth the NFL's time for developmental league when they already
have college troll and now I would argue that there's
a practice squad type of way to make this happen

(44:44):
where you can have by region, you can put the Panthers, Saints, Falcons,
you kind of have them have their own practice squad
team and play in practice against someone else. It's it's
I I wrote about this before. Um, but then if
it doesn't feel the need because college football provides them
a free minor leagues. And also we're seen now with

(45:04):
the NFL offenses and coaches be more adaptable. They're changing
NFL offenses to do what these quarterbacks have done well
in college, and so for so long it never happened.
And so now even less is there a need to
put a quarterback in developmentally because guess what, we're running
the same offense you're running in college. What more do
you need to develop? So the NFL, there's there's no

(45:25):
knee Now, look they're gonna they're gonna have their scout
watch this. We're gonna watch it live. They're watching from
Sea Lions and Blues playing each other right now in
the Swing Football League. Six nothing, by the way, with
six minutes to go on the half. I did not
way to join this unfortunately. Um, but yeah, I think
it's just we played at Rice in in Dallas, so

(45:47):
I just it's that's what you're saying. Oh again, I'm
not gonna ever tell anyone to stop on their geam
except except Tim tebow um and I just get a
reaction from last week. We are well, you spent the
entire second hour and if honestly, if we hadn't run

(46:07):
out of still a picture there was a picture of
catching a football from he wasn't even looking at the ball.
He just was no idea and there was a thing
him blocking And was like, all right, buddy, you've never
blocked in your life. And now you're just gonna how
many linebackers are just there's gonna be and this is
that the idea of unloading on I think there's three
pieces in games, and so there are three I don't
think I know. Um, let's say Tim, Tim plays the

(46:29):
you know, the final quarter of the first one. You
don't think there's a defensive end on whoever they're playing.
We said they're playing the Falcons in the week one
of the preseason. Who I'm not gonna make the team probably,
but who is gonna just try to make a name
for himself by blowing up Tim Tebow. He's gonna have
h and so it's just it's so silly. But nonetheless, um,

(46:50):
I'm all for like guys, you know, they're playing their
dream out right now. I I buddies that played in
the in the a f L and spring leagues and
XFL and and in arena and arenda football. But he
played arena to like the secondary league for arena football.
I'm all for. But there's no need for the NFL.
I said. The only way the Alliance American Football or
any other spring league. And go back to the USFL,

(47:11):
which was the last, you know, semi challenge of the NFL.
The reason they were was they were competing for talent.
When they signed herschel Walker in those days, herschel Walker
was not eligible for the NFL draft because he was
a junior, and the USFL said no, this is by
the way. Going back to basketball, the a BA did
the same thing that the NBA. They started drafting under classmen.

(47:33):
When the NBA says no, no, no, you gotta wait
till they graduate college, maybe he says, those are your rules,
those are not our rules, and you started rating the talent.
A f L did the same thing to the NFL.
They started rating talent, and suddenly, over time you're accumulating
a lot of talent that eventually was on par And
there was talk of the XFL before bankruptcy, and you

(47:55):
know they're coming back now. Of the way they're gonna
make it work is by paying you know, Bryce young
DJ there. You know these top these top high school
recruits at a quarterback Lawrence after let's say his sophomore
year where he's not the NFL, but that he's probably
on a track already, you know, the top draft pick.

(48:16):
We're staying in school makes more sense. But paying these
high school these kids coming from high school to college,
paying them a million dollars per year to skip college,
you go, right, is doing right now with the NBA,
which again I don't, I don't And by the way,
that didn't really go very far, did it. Did you
see any of these five star recruits to played in
that elitely? No? And now there's a new league that's

(48:38):
gonna pay them a hundred thousand dollars and they're gonna
the Overtime Sports League, right, that's gonna let them leave
high school. Well, guess what if you go play in
that league and that league folds after a year, you
cannot go to college. Now you've professionals soon as you've
gotten a pay check. And that might change with name,
image and likeness. We'll see if that all change. But

(49:01):
I don't I get these avenues. I get players trying
to get in their money. And again I'm all for that.
You know that concept. But you know the XFL is
good to your point, they're gonna have to pay two
a tongue of low with the knock out Alabama and
come playing their league. And I think there's so much
value and we we've for some reason, we've gone the
other direction of devaluing the brand of these schools. There's

(49:21):
a lot of value in going and playing in Alabama.
There's a lot of value of going and playing it
comes in, and we've somehow gone the opposite direction where
we've all devalued that. Now it's well and now that
you're gonna make it possible for the elite players to
make money while maintaining their college eligibility, supposedly they have
like this is happening. You have to wait, wake up,
like you have to make You have to come up

(49:43):
with some sort of way to make this work. I've
talked to athletic directors. On my Path twelve show, we
had Mark Harlan of Utah and I said, Hey, Mark,
what what would happen if your state doesn't have a
bill passed? In Utah? And that's double A hasn't made
up their minds yet, but the six states on July
one decide that they're doing, names goes, we would just

(50:04):
do it and deal with the conquerence later like that,
come on and find something like you have to You
have one month to figure this out. He said, we
would do it. He said, they're probably a waiver, but
we would just do it. Again, there are a step behind, Jeff. Seriously,
when you're the n c A and you have insane
amount of power that they have and all the money
that's been poured in all of this stuff, to them

(50:25):
is a little frivolous, like are we really under any threat?
And the reality is yes, you are unless you do
something to prevent it from actually happening. All right, Julio Jones,
I hear now that. Okay, first of all, let's go
back to Shannon Sharpe. What he did with that cold
call to Julio Jones without telling them that he was

(50:47):
on telling him. He did not tell him. I didn't
see that update on that. Who Not only is that
a state offense, but because Hula Jones is not in
the same state that he said, that's actually a federal crime.
I don't know if are gonna be taking him off
in handcuffs anytime soon. Did I ever tell you the
story about Shannon Sharp one time and Sharvice? Just I
don't know. I don't know about Shannon. Remember when Antonio

(51:09):
Gates got busted for using p E d s a
few years ago, Right, so here's his future Hall of
Fame tight end. Right. So I'm working on the de
facto charger station at the time. We got this breaking
story that he's been busted for p DS and we're
doing the show, and all of a sudden, my producer
jumps on my ear and he goes, we have Shannon
Sharp on the phone. You do are you sure? Yeah,

(51:34):
it's Shannon Sharp. All right, let's let's bring on Shannon Sharp. Shannon,
how are you today? Yeah? I was listening to you guys. Uh,
And then I just wanted to make it clear that
Antonio Gates has been eliminated from any consideration for the
Hall of Fame after being busted by p E. D. S.
I never did it. I got to the top of

(51:55):
the game, and he's like rambling on him, like why
are you calling us hello? What is this abound? Preparing
for his his his his new job with the next thing,
I know, he's involved in this situation with Julio Jones.
Who did it? Do damage to the Falcons? So all
of a sudden, the Falcons are like, we've we've got

(52:17):
the first round offer for Julio Jones. And now around
the NFL they're laughing at the Falcons saying, if someone
had offered you a first round pick, seriously offered you
a first round pick for Julio Jones, he would have
already been traded. He would have already been gone. So
if you're the Falcons right now, apparently the idea of
getting a first round oh, wasn't just the first round pick.

(52:39):
You also have to pick up the whole fifty million
dollar salary of his and an additional two million dollar
bonus is something along the line. If you were a
team right now, would you take all that on for
Julio Jones. UM, is there a team out there that
you see could pay that steep price for Julio Jones.
It's very important to UM to talk about his contract

(53:05):
structure as well, because I think we're people are forgetting
this when they when they talk about him. So he
has this year left, he's not too expensive this year,
and then next year he's owed eleven million dollars. He
ain't playing for eleven million dollars. So if you trade
a first round pick for Julio, you also are paying
him a contract extension, which you might not want to do.
This is what the Rams they with Jalen Rams correct

(53:29):
two ones, but they knew they were going to have
to give him a huge contract, which they did right.
So that's obviously a big difference in those So I
would I don't think they're gonna get a first for him.
They might get a second. But the question becomes why
are the Falcons doing this? Because when they drafted Kyle
Pitts fourth overall, the assumption, and maybe we were all
wrong about this, was they drafted him fourth overall because

(53:53):
they're all in with Matt Ryan. Right, there's meat left
on the right, and if you're all in with Matt Ryan,
you're sort of all in with Julio Jones, like he's
part of that equation. And you might think, Okay, we
have Ridley, sure we have pits. Now, we enough weapons,
but I don't get what the fact that they're doing
well we don't know what they're doing is if you look,
you know the Patriots used to do this all the time,

(54:15):
where they would trade like Seymour other guys, where they
would get rid of them early while I still had
market value. So maybe they're thinking if we can somehow.
This is before the whole Shannon Sharp situation where the
cat was left out of the bag, where there was
speculation but nothing directly from Julio Jones about being out
in Atlanta. They lost all their leverage. But if you

(54:36):
floated out there and you're saying, hey, if we could
get a first round pick right now for Julio Jones
and get that money off the books, sure let's do
the deal. Now, why wait a year when he's thirty
three years old. I'm sure that was their thinking. But
all that went out the window once Julio Jones was
snookered into going on live TV and making it clear

(54:57):
that he was out in Atlanta, so I just can't
believe that there was not a heads up. And I
saw that his agency has pissed about it. Just about it.
Fox is getting some blowback from the NFL about it.
Not ideal, good at all, No, and I'm surprised that
Shannon didn't know this. You can just put somebody on
and they're not telling them that they're online. Let's talking
about you know, you know, uh, you know, a two

(55:19):
party consent in California and stuff like that, Like it
was unbelievable. It's not ideal, all right. Options for Aaron Rodgers,
what are they? We still have three options available and
now some are considering one of these options as the
most likely next step for Aaron Rodgers. We're gonna tell

(55:40):
you what that is coming up next. Sam, Did I
ever tell you that I was? Sam? Yes, that I've
always felt that Jumping Jack Flash is the most per
fick formulated rock song ever, not just Stone song, but

(56:07):
I'm talking about this song to me, is near perfection
as far as a walk song is concerned. I can
dig it. They're just something about this song from the
first time I heard it, and just like I love
this Jeff hates the Rolling Stones, So no, he's kid,
I mean, and then then the roll is obviously Stones
have some classic songs, but there's something about Jumping Jack

(56:29):
Flash that just resonates with me. Going back to my
dire need days. You never saw my band, did you know?
Did you ever play in a rock band? No? No,
nothing like that. But you know what, I don't think
there's a formula for rock band. Big guys. There's some
big guys. They're doing a lot of different types out there.
All right, I want to ask you about Aaron Rodgers

(56:50):
right now. A little update by the way, the Aaron
Rodgers apparently is very enamored with the idea of Jeopardy.
He really is. However, we got bad news for him.
So you know, the Jeopardy audience. When you're married to
Alex Trebeck for forty years, um, there's a lot to
be said about who's going to replace Alex Treback. And

(57:13):
so they've been pulling people about some of these people
that have been stepping in and hosting the show, and
the overwhelming favorite, according to those surveys, to host Jeopardy
is Ken Jennings because he's the ultimate Jeopardy player and
they like Ken Jennings. Now, the good news for Aaron

(57:35):
Rodgers is he came up second on the list, So
he's a bat head of Anderson Cooper or Katie Kirk
or any of these other celebrity host But he's not
the number one guy. He's not the guy. But he
seems really enamored with this, like this is this isn't
just some passing fancy for Aaron Rodgers where he's trying

(57:57):
to use it for leverage to get more out of
the Packers anything else. It's like really a job he
would like to do, and I also think that helps
him at least perceived leverage with the Packers. I think
he would love to do it. Yeah, but if he
got the job, he would take it and that would
be it. You're not gonna walk out of that job.
I think if you go back to the NFL, I

(58:17):
think if he if he liked the management, which seems
to be the number one problem, he would go back
and play. I think if he was traded somewhere he
wanted to be, like San Francisco, he would play football
and also hosts Jeopardy as much as he could. But
I mean, first of all, if you were the producers
at Jeopardy. You're not going to hire him as a
as a one year rental. You're you're gonna have to
sign long term here, right, And I think that again,

(58:39):
I think that he's using this mostly for leverage, But
I don't think that he would choose Jeopardy over being
the Packers quarter or the Niners quarterback, or the Patriots
quarterback or the Broncos quarterback. I think it's leverage froment
but your point, it's probably gaining the job. I think
we all assumed that he was getting it for some reason.
I don't know why. Um, but if he doesn't get

(59:01):
the job, now, the leverage is zero. Okay, So let's
get back to another option. And so if you take
the Jeopardy situation out, then you really have three options.
Either stays with the Packers, he plays for another team,
or he retires. Retiring is an option, but he's really
gonna have to play it, right if you think about retirement.

(59:24):
In other words, if he retires, let's say he announces
his retirement. Understand, the Packers would still hold his rights
even if he came out of retirement. But this would
give you an idea of what you got with Jordan's Love.
Let's say, okay, he's retired, Jordan loves our new quarterback,
and guess what they win eleven or twelve games, They
make the playoffs and it looks like Jordan's Love has

(59:46):
a future in the NFL. If Aaron Rodgers and then
were to try to come back to the Packers, are
they gonna? What would you do? I mean, if you
were the Packers and you throw Jordan's Love out there
and he actually performs and there's not a huge drop off,
at least record wise from what you had with Aaron Rodgers,
and the team has accepted Jordan's Love as the new guy,

(01:00:08):
and then all of a sudden, you got Aaron Rodgers
knocking on the door saying, hey, I'm back. I mean,
this is almost what happened with Brett Farve, except it
never did happen. Once the Packers handed the ball to
Aaron Rodgers, that was there was no going back as
far as Brett Farve. So what would you do if
you're a Green Bay and all of a sudden you
have a decent year out of Jordan's Love. He has

(01:00:28):
a future, and all of a sudden, Aaron's like, I'm
ready to come back. Well, you would trade him then,
But I think Rogers knows that Love isn't the guy
because he wouldn't be putting on this hard play if
he thought love was good. Because if Love was good,
they would just probably already traded him already, right, We
saw that with Pat Mohomes Alex Smith. Pama was played

(01:00:50):
one game. Now, Alexmith is not Aaron Rodgers. But Alexmith
came off the best season of his career. The Chiefs
won division again and went to the playoffs. Um no,
they didn't when didn't when the play off game. But
the Chiefs are like, all right, Alex goodbye. And also
we've seen pot Homes. If Jordan Love was that good,
that they would do the same thing already. Now they
drafted Jordan's Love because they thought Rogers was gonna decline.

(01:01:14):
I get the mindset right, We're seeing big Ben happen.
You know right now kind of going off, Philip Rivers
don't kind of go downhill. Eli Manning went downhill fast.
Tom Brady's the outlier keeps going up is he got
Drew Brees right, couldn't throw the ball down the field,
And so the Packers thought that's when Aaron Rodgers fate
and they're wrong about that. They were a hundred percent wrong,

(01:01:34):
and they're paying the price for being wrong, which is
you wasted the draft pick, you trade up for that
draft pick, and Rogers now doesn't want to play for
a team anymore. So you really stuck. But the Packers
are gonna stick to their guns. They're gonna say, hey,
either show up, we'll roll with love, or you just
retire and you just not play football and do nothing.
I think Roger's ego won't let him do nothing. Now

(01:01:56):
people would disagree with me. I've had We've had Jordan
Palmer on a different program saying hey, Rogers is that
guy he will not play? You know, famously his brother
did not play eventually got himself traded to the Raiders.
But a lot of it depends on what happens the
first month of the season. If he doesn't play, if
Jordan Luck comes out and isn't very good, the Packers

(01:02:17):
might beg him to come back and throw enough money
at him to where he wants to come back. This
is the by the way, the I'm one way to
solve this is guaranteed money. Okay, who woa whoa whoa, whoa, whoa. See.
But that gets back to Semini. I've discussed before Jeff
about the difference between and Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady.
If this is just about money in terms of, hey,
I'm the league's m v P. I should once again
be the highest paid quarterback, even if it's going to

(01:02:40):
jeopardize the opportunity of this franchise to bring an additional talent,
then that's all the proof you need to know that
it's about Aaron first and team second. So it appears
that the number one is baring Rogers is there's not
communication between the front office and himself. Whether that's just

(01:03:00):
like hey hello, where that's you know, personnel decisions. Alex
Smith talked this week on Calling Coward Show about, you know,
the the chiefs were very informative with him throughout the process, um,
you know, making sure that he knew what was happening
with Pat Mahomes, and obviously Rogers feels there wasn't that
level of communication. I only the Packers thought they were
gonna draft Jordan Love either that night, so that's probably
why there wasn't that that communication with him. And so

(01:03:22):
he feels that there's a lack of communication, and there's
a and there's no one telling him he's their guy, right,
And the number one way you change that part of it,
not the communication part, is by saying, hey, we're gonna
give you two years of guaranteed money. You're our guy.
But then if you're the Packers, you're basically ensuring that
Jordan's Love doesn't play for two years. And that's what
It's just the circle of like life here where it's

(01:03:45):
you know, the Packers start Rogers was was done to
a draft Jordan Love piste off Rogers. Now Rogers doesn't
want to play because they're because Love is there, but
Love isn't good enough to play quite yet. It's just
like this, it's because the drafted Jordan Love. It's playing simple.
By the way, there was one other note. That's week
Packer wide receivers didn't show up at O T A S. Yeah,
I mean that's it's not I you could do that

(01:04:06):
as a slight too, because it was funny. This week
they're like, wow, Jordan's Love looks really good. That was
one of the big stories, and I like, wait a second,
the top receivers are all out. I wouldn't put much
stock into Rogers not being there. I know people say
it's there every year, but remember when the cbing negotiations
were happening, he was He came with the last second
trying to blow it all up because he didn't want
you don't buy anything to all the receivers not showing up.

(01:04:29):
I mean, is that a protest by the receivers? Well,
I don't know that they want Rogers there. Yeah, right,
but Rogers can just show up. Monte Adas have made
it pretty clear that I have no future in green
Bay if Aaron Rodgers is gone. Well it's again at
another time on Jordan's love. But again, what do they
what do they want from green Bay to Rogers to
get him to come back? If green Bay offers him

(01:04:50):
a hundred billion dollars and he says no, then how's
that on the Packers? By the way, how do you
operate as an NFL team and then you have no owner?
I mean, who has the ultimate saying green Bay? Save
that for a second. Let's find out what's trending right now.
Let's bring on David Gascon. I always wonder that about
the green Bay Packers. If they're owned by the city people,

(01:05:12):
who's who makes the final decision on these things. How
are you, David, I'm good, doing much better and looking
at online. The beautiful thing with YouTube is you can
look at pretty much in anything. Looks something up, you
know that's tryna sure fix something in a car, maybe
washing machine and oven stove on. You love instructional videos

(01:05:33):
on YouTube? Yeh. Look, I am so lame mechanically. Uh,
and it's all there for you. It doesn't matter what anything. Yeah,
I have zero mechanical ability. I'm I'm on YouTube right
now looking up how to take down a six ft
seven film more offensive? Yeah, yeah, we mean you don't
know how to do anything, Steve. I Mechanically I'm not.

(01:05:55):
I I there's a lot of things I know, but no,
you take like was aptitude tests when you're in high
school and I was like, and except mechanically as like
a ten percent, I can't do anything. And people would
argue and even good at this, But basically, like when
you have no skills, you do this. This is it

(01:06:15):
exactly when you have no skills, this is what you're
relegated to. I think you guys are in good shape
right now, so all good um guys in bad shape
to Miami Heat. They're getting ready for the summer now. Uh.
Milwaukee slept them aside earlier today one twenty to one
on three. Milwaukee wins that ball game quite easily. After
being down in the first half, they outscored miam in
the second half. They were a plus thirteen in the

(01:06:37):
third quarter, walked away with an easy victory. You're honest
who started off the game two of eleven from the field,
finished with twenty points, fifteen assists and also twelve rebounds.
Portland and Denver underway Trailblazer is leading right now by
eight seven to nineteen. Ball game right now, still in
the first quarter. Washington in Philly is on deck. Major
League Baseball right now. San Diego and Houston just un

(01:06:59):
to win the firstending. There's no score you Darvish throwing
for the road team in that affair. Tampa Bay five
three winners of the Phillies Milwaukee and game one with
doubleheader dropped the Nationals for one. Was the final National
Hockey League Toronto and Montreal. Get things under went. A
couple of hours from now that his game number six.
Canadians down that series three games to two. All right

(01:07:19):
to you guys, all right, Thank you very much, David.
Once again, Steve Hartman, Jeff Schwartz with you. Let's answer
the question I had. Who has the ultimate say with
the Packers? If the if the team is owned by
tens of thousands of Green Bay fans, who runs that operation?
I mean, if I were anyone president? Who Mark Murphy
is the president? I believe so he has the final

(01:07:41):
say on everything he does? The general manager, that's his job, right, Yes,
the Tradeway Rogers, I mean the guy whose name I
will never I'm I'm committed to not know his name
because I feel like he's very short. Um. If the
only difference was to if Aaron Rodgers and listening to
his interview that he did with Kenny Maine, which was
bizarre by the way, because he came on and he's

(01:08:02):
sort of clear to Kenny the only reason I'm here
is I'm a fanni ears. I don't want to say goodbye.
But I give Kenny Maine credit. He kept pressing and
pressing and pressing him. Did you see how this all
played out where he finally says, he goes, are you
demanding a trade? And the next thing you know, Aaron
Rodgers has given us a Packer's history lesson. He mentioned
Curly Lambeo, he mentioned Lobardi, uh and everything else. But

(01:08:24):
if his only problem is the direction that the general
manager wants to take the team, is that sort of
a no brainer decision if you're the Packers organization. If
all we have to do is get rid of the
GM to make sure Aaron's on the field, bye bye.
But the GM has also built up a roster that's
made the MP game two years in a row. Like,

(01:08:45):
I don't think the gym has done a bad job.
Now you again, the Jordan lanpick was bad. There's no noend,
no defending that, right, There's no defending the next two picks.
I wouldn't in that draft as well. But in this
year's draft they needed defensive help. The draft a corner
they built the raw Strup will. In fact, this year's draft,
I think all pro left tackle right, good defensive ends.
How did you rate this year's draft as far as

(01:09:07):
drafting to need even I don't remember. I remember that
they you know, they dropped Savage in the first round, right,
and that was a huge need for them corner. So
outside of that one draft and pissing off Rogers, which
again he miscalculated where Rogers was in his career. There's
no there's no doubting that that's what happened here, But
to fire him. I've even see people suggest people respect

(01:09:28):
Aaron Ross should be the GM. What are we talking
about today? Can't have a players at GM? No, I
I get that part of it. But well, here here's
let me ask you this. When we talk about a
franchise quarterback at the level of Aaron Rodgers, should he
be consulted by the organization in terms of the hiring

(01:09:50):
of general managers and coaches? Should that be something that
if you are a franchise quarterback at that level and
you're out to hire a new GM or a new coach,
should they have a say in the matter. I think
you should make it feel like to have a say
in the matter, whether or not they actually do. Is
any individual to the team and you bring him in
on the interviews? Do you bring him in on the meetings?

(01:10:10):
I think that no. I think you keep him. I
think you keep you give him notes on what's happening
through the through the process, and you might ask for
his input. I'm not sure he's in the meetings because
you're not there's not a guarantee that Rogers would be
there with the coach the entire time as well, and
you know, you know, if you get hurt, I think
it's a dangerous situation, Steve. But I think I think
it's fair to attempt to keep him in the loop.

(01:10:34):
You know, like there are times when we have relationships
with with people where we know they're not making the decision.
But we kept in the loop out of respect. They
could have done that, and we Alex Smith again to
go back to him because he talked us about it.
The Chiefs kept him in the loop with Pat Mahomes
because they respect Alex Smith, and it was the right
thing to do. Now, if Alex Smith said, hey, should

(01:10:55):
we draft him and he said no, well screw you.
Him gonna do what we want to do. But I
think this key being Rogers in the loop of what
they were gonna do was important. Also. Look again, I
don't think a player should be a gym. I don't
think that Rogers should demand go get me a wide receiver,
go get these three guys or I mean you could
say that and maybe the Packers say, hey, man, we're
trying to get him, but we just we just couldn't
afford him whatever it is, but just to kind of

(01:11:16):
keep him in the loop and keep him feeling like
like he's part of it. Now. Again, every organization does
it differently. I would argue players and there should be
separation of power between players and general managers. But if
you know that your quarterback who is this good, has
his personality, it makes sense to be like, oh, you know, Rogers,
we're thinking about bringing in you know, Marvin Jones Jr.

(01:11:36):
Or something. Again, he might say yes, no, whatever, but
at least you kind of let him know you're thinking
about him. It's very rare that I've seen an athlete.
The first time I remember an athlete controlling personnel on
the team was Wayne Gretzky. When Gretzky came to the Kings,
over the next couple of years, they just all they
got all these Evanton guys started coming over. I mean

(01:11:57):
one half another guy said he was comfortable with on
the ice. Lebron does it too. Lebron absolutely does it.
But the first guy I actually remember was Gretzky, where
the Kings literally changed everything to accommodate, and I know
they didn't win any Cups when he was there. Did
it work? Did it help them get to where they
got to? One Stanley Cup final that they should have won?
Probably they didn't, But no it didn't. But I mean
their idea was, we literally have brought in, in the

(01:12:20):
prime of his career, the greatest player in the history
of the NHL, and yeah, we're gonna accommodate whatever he
feels is necessary to give him the best chance to
win the cup. But did it? But did it hurt
the team? I should say, I think ultimately killed the
team because afterwards they went right into the toilet for
a decade. So there's a fine line there between you
brought in a lot of older players, same thing about Lebron.

(01:12:41):
Lebron never feels comfortable with a round younger players and
and that makes sense and his part of his career
and you're going for a title like that, I get it.
In basketball, less players, okay, one or two players, can
you know? And and a lot of times, you know,
these guys are favorites for the agent, right you know,
KCP gets twelve in a year, you know, I mean
not you know, like it's a favorite for his agent, right. Uh,
things like that in the NFL, though, because there's so

(01:13:03):
many players, and there's so many kind of things that
go into signing players and their tape and their injury
history in there and and again their film and how
they fit your scheme, all those things that like Rogers
is not watching his opponents with the idea, how do
they fitting in the Packers defense? How does this linebacker
fit in in how we rushed the passer? You know how?

(01:13:24):
You know, how does this? How does this tackles? He
could zone blocking tackle. He's not doing it that stuff.
He's definitely not watching college players play. So to say
that he should be involved in the process, it's really
probably not smart. To your point about Gretzky, it probably
wouldnt help the Packers, but it would play Kate his
ego if you just kind of were like, anybuddy, we're
thinking about signing these guys, what do you think Rogers?
Or this is directually want to go with FRA agency,

(01:13:45):
or this is what we're thinking about improving the offense.
I just feel like he, again right or wrong, he
wants to feel like he is more part of the
decision making process. Again, you can fake it if you're
the Packers to make him happy, which I would argue
the Lakers do with Lebron. Okay, fine, you know, Okay, well,
we'll bring into your players like you know, they just
do it to make them happy because they know in

(01:14:06):
the end it's not gonna hurt them. Yeah, this is
always that fine line. And we've had this conversation where
if you were to ask fans, you always ask this question, right,
all right, if we could make some deals that would
guarantee a championship this season, but would also mean for
the next ten years you're the biggest loser in the league,
would you do it? Would you sign up for a

(01:14:28):
championship this season for ten losing season on the back half?
Overwhelming majority of fans say, I don't care about those
ten years. I want to win right now. I'll do it,
and they do it. And we've seen Francis. Look at
the Eagles right now? How are the Eagles looking? So
that that's the thing that I've always thought, like for
Oregan football, I want a championship in the worst way.
Would I take one knowing we have ten years of failure?

(01:14:51):
I mean there is some bit of I enjoy that
we're good every year, right, right, So what do you
want to do? Do you want to be in the
conversation for ten years but never get there, or would
you take the one big year where you win at
all in exchange for nine years where you're I guess
also depends on what my rival is doing. If my

(01:15:12):
rival also sucks, that I can deal with it for
ten years. But in the moment, if Oregan wins and
then Washington is good for nine of the ten years
that we're bad, I'm not sure I can handle that.
So uh yeah, and and again for But these are
what a lot of organizations are thinking about. Again, when
you're talking about an older quarterback and like selling out

(01:15:34):
to do whatever it takes in the short turn to
maybe get us over the top, but put our future
in jeopardy? Is it worth it? Um? It? Where the
Packers are at now, they've won one title between two
between far and pat and Rogers, I mean, is that
a success or failure? It's not the Patriots, well, no

(01:15:56):
one's the Patriots, But I mean, you know, even Big
Ben has two titles, right right? Eli Manning has two titles?
Um obviously telling pretty has a zillion of them in
between Peyton Manning what to four super Bowls to an
indie two with with the Broncos. Drew Brees has been
to one. Um. You know, I think they would look
at that and say, hey, you know we've won each
but I think they would go for it. But again,

(01:16:19):
what is that? At what points? That just giving Rogers
more guaranteed money? You get back to the money part.
I'm not thinking you're talking about the money. I'm not
thinking about the money. I'm thinking about what is the
best scenario right now for the packer organizam your quarterback
and the way that happens, you pay more money, Okay,
but you have to weigh the other options as well
on the other side. So Jeff watching all the games

(01:16:40):
right now, We've got more nbas so we're gonna get
into the mind of Jeff Schwartz. We got a lot
of NBA action today. What's the best play? What's the
best play for the rest of today? In the NBA playoffs?
You're gonna find out. Coming up next, all right, Steve Irban,

(01:17:01):
Jeff Shorts, get ready because Jeff's got something special for you.
But first I want to thank the guys. Hey, Iowa Sam,
look at Iowa Sam. Jeff, I've barely come in to
talk to you. Today and I apologize. You have a
job to do, he does. Okay, I'm just over here
watching random baseball games on my computer. So let me
ask you this as a Pack twelve guy, packed ten

(01:17:21):
guy back in the day, Um, he's a big ten guy. Yeh?
Is the big ten Pack twelve rivalry as intense as
it used to be? Because he used to be what rivalry? Like? What?
What do you like? A Rose Bowl? Right? But now?
But now the Rose Bowl gets rotated in the cycle exactly?
Is there any any connection of the Big ten As

(01:17:43):
a back twelve guy, I still think the Rose Bowl
is the best bowl game, and I think it's it's
still a huge bowl to win, like Oregon one a
couple of years ago. It's great to beat Wisconsin because
you often play in the Rose Bowl, you play a
top ten, big ten. I was raised done big tin pack,
eight pack tin pack because back then it was just

(01:18:05):
that's all we had was the Rose Bowl. And now
we can play in other bowl games. But this year
though week two, September eleven, Oregon Ohio State, big new
kickoff for Fox and then Washington's at Michigan's huge weekend
for Pack twelve. No, I I still feel as a
Pack twelve guy, there's a rivalry with the Big Ten.

(01:18:27):
I think now remember how the Big Ten and the
Pack twelve were a lock step that they were going
to not have as that work. That didn't work very well,
at least for us UM. At the time, I thought
we were right to do that, but it ended up
not being And and part of it too that I
think he gets overlooked about the Pack twelve is it's
the States, right we go back. I know we've been

(01:18:48):
talking about college softball, but U c l A played
last night. They're the only team or only teams that
had to wear masks while they're playing. At least at
least they around their next and put them back up
because of California's researches. That's why Pacte Queen play football
all right, June, that's gonna thankfully want to thank David
Gascon as usual, He's put the challenge out for Schwartz.

(01:19:09):
Next time they're gonna line up against each other. I
am a little I'm a little bullish. I'm not gonna
allow on the resurgence of the Pack twelve. And part
of that is because of the eviction of Larry Scott.
I like, um uh, George Cloth at least look, dude
has made money everywhere he's been in. Our number one

(01:19:29):
problem is making money in the marketing cospect is horrendous
whether or not. Look, I think if you had a
list of things you want a new PacTel commissioner, you
wanted college admissions experience, in college sports experience. He doesn't
have those. But everyone's being has made money. That's the
number one problem is making money. All I figured is this.
I think the Pack twelve has been undervalued, undervalued over

(01:19:51):
the years and the idea of being on the west
coast now on the east coast. Ryan, thanks for jumping
in today. I mean i'd see Lee finally showing up.
Where is he? There's? Was he there? He is? Yeah? Alright,
so we have a little all right. Um yeah, I
think it are undervalued. Under the right leadership, there's no
reason the Pack twelve camp be on par with the

(01:20:12):
SEC and these other Also we can sail this too,
but organ has to beat Ohio State, Washington has to
be Michigan like us. He's gotta beating Notre Dame. We like,
all these things have got to happen. The ency is
so great because they beat everybody, and so we need
to get money and resources into recruiting and keeping the
players in our footprint to standard football. The quarterbacks this

(01:20:36):
year for Alabama, Georgia, Clemes in Ohasa, Oklahoma, all from
southern California or Arizona. Yes, how does Clemson have the
kid that was the number one rated quarterback in the
country out of southern California? Has Alabama had Bryce Young?
The same thing? Exactly? All right? So let's get to
Jeff Schwartz's best play of the day here. NBA playoffs

(01:20:56):
got all these series going on right now. By the way,
Portland's leaning Denver try to even up this series right
now about five minutes ago in the first half. So
when you look at the schedule today, what games stands
out for you? Jeff, I really like Grizzlies first quarter
to win the first quarter against the Jazz. Alright, So
here's where we are. So the Jazz and Grizzlies, Memphis
pulled the upset game one in Utah, Utah even it

(01:21:19):
up quite easily. Now they're back in Memphis. If you're
called the game kind of close to the end, I get.
I'm just trying to right now, so you think Memphis
comes out on fire before the home crowd, Yes, okay,
And so I rolled with them because I think the
Jazz is a better team and the Jazz might end
up winning the game. You get a little exotic, you go,
you know, Jazz to cover, and you go Grizzlies first quarter.

(01:21:40):
That's the line on what it was first quarter line
on this money I just took them with Shure. The
money line I think was plus one twent plus one twenties.
So you're going money line that the Memphis will win
the first quarter. All right, Great,
