Speaker 1 (00:01):
Don't listening to Fox Sports. Ah. Yes, living the drain
once again on a fabulous college football Saturday. This is
Fox Football Saturday. Harban and Shorts with you once again
in our Fox Sports radio studios. I missed this man
last week. Some people had a theory that after his

(00:23):
Oregon Ducks got wiped out in the Pack twelve championship game,
that he decided, I I can't get out of bed.
I can't move. There's no way. Actually, you were hosting
some kind of shin dig last Saturday, were you not. Yeah?
I was at the Big Ten championship game in Lucas
Oil Stadium and uh for Fox. It was a it

(00:44):
was a Wendy's tailgate. It was me and R. J.
Young and Braylon Edwards and Devont Gardner. Was a ton
of fun. It was very loud. We were inside. Um
and uh yeah it was. It was. It was pretty cool.
The first time I've been in a football stadium since COVID. Yes,
it's a super Bowl. The Chiefs and um uh nine

(01:04):
are Super Bowl. So it was loud. Michigan fans were there.
They were hot and heavy. They were there, um and
it was loud, and it was the band was right.
It was a lot of fun. I had a good time.
You know. I know it's only been a couple of weeks,
but I feel like we got like two months worth
of stories to catch up on. And mean, he got
so many things to talk about today on the show.

(01:24):
By the way, we're brought to you by one of
our favorite cities, Las Vegas, the greatest arena on Earth,
Planier two. Today at visit the Las Vegas dot com.
I might as well start there because I was in
Las Vegas on Tuesday night for the National Football Foundation
dinner honoring the College Football Hall of Fame classes about
one and I was there as a guest of my

(01:46):
dear friend Eric Dickerson, part of the Hall of Fame
class at I gotta tell you, Jeff, it was. It
was a mind boggling event. It really was. Normally, in fact,
this this event has always taken place in New York
City for years at the Waldorf Astoria. Then in ten
they moved it to the Midtown Hilton. Last year was canceled,

(02:08):
but because of the size of this event with too
Hall of Fame classes, they needed to move it, and
so they moved it to the Ari Resort in Las Vegas.
Imagine this room. Okay, now you know me, I am
a college football junkie. It is of all the sports,
my number one sport. And we're talking about two Hall

(02:28):
of Fame classes combined that had thirty two people, So
that's that group, and then about forty returning Hall of famers,
everyone from like Matt Leinard and Peyton Manning to Vince Dooley.
I mean, they were just rolling them out, all these
great Hall of Fame names. But imagine this room. There
were two hundred tables, and I know there were two

(02:50):
hundred because there were numbers at the tables. Two hundred
tables with at least ten people at each table. That's
two thousand people in this room. Is just gigantic. Archie
Manning was there, Rheese Davis, if ESPN was the MC
it was just if you are a college football junkie,
I'm telling you, Uh, tickets weren't cheap, I will tell

(03:11):
you that much. But uh, but the wonderful dinner. But
just to be there around all that history of college football.
For me, I just I'm still on a high from it.
It was an absolutely fabulous night in Vegas. The National
Football Foundation, by the way, the amount of money they
spent on that. You always wonder about how much money
is there in college football. Oh, there's a lot of money.

(03:34):
I mean, I mean the tickets were off the chart,
and that place was packed, and it was that the
amount of money they spent the production was just a
plus across the board. Amazing night, amazing night. My my
good friend Aaron Taylor was inducted. He was and um,

(03:54):
you know what, your name has had a lot of
good offensive lineman the last six or seven years. There
he might be the best whenever he will never let
me say that out last. Don't don't mind, don't mind
you just said that. I mean, Quinnels is obviously very good.
But I mean a t was a two time All American,
which is is not having very often in college football.
Um so and mostly that because people leave after the
first All American year, Right, they don't stay. They don't

(04:15):
stay till until untill much longer. Um. But yeah, I
know that obviously. Again, the I would say kind of
the you know, the pent up excitement for an event
that didn't happen last year, Right, everyone's excited to get
back out again. I'll be in Vegas at the end
of the month as well. So I'm excited to go
to Vegas and I'm glad you be able to go,
because it's in college football right now is in a
weird place. I'm not sure people thought even with open

(04:39):
transfer and n I l and you know, we we
we we had And I missed this last of obviously
because I wasn't here. You know, there were some schools
that we considered sacred where coaches did not leave those
schools Oklahoma and Notre Dame, right to schools where you
think to yourself, if a coach goes there, they're never leaving,

(04:59):
right It's dream school. And Lincoln Riley did so much
winning in Oklahoma, and now obviously it's at USC, and
I get Brian Kelly was there twelve years of Notre Dame.
Goes to l s U where they've won three championships
and eighteen years with three different coaches, he has a
higher chance to win a championship. And we've gone to
a point now where and I've said this for a
couple of years now because mostly because I think I'm
a Pack twelve guy and we're never in the playoff.

(05:21):
But you know that it used to be Steve ten
twelve years ago, even during the BCS era, that winn
in ten games and making a good Bowl was considered
a really good season, and it was satisfying to do that.
But now if you don't make a playoff, and even
even if you're not even supposed to make a playoff,
if you don't make a playoff, it's looked at as

(05:43):
a bad season. So so Brian Kelly who, I think
it's a fabulous coach who has done wonders at Notre Dame,
continuing to, you know, to have that school in playoff
contention with the limitations they have in recruiting and location
things like that, he felt the need to go to
l you because that would fulfill a championship goal for him. Right,
He's not, He's not everyone championship right, But also we

(06:06):
can but bohol on Jeff, there are other considerations. You're right,
he's likely to ever get the caliber of athletes collectively,
he needs to win a national championship at Notre Dame,
something he can do a l s who considering the
three previous coaches all one a national championship, Nick Navon,
Les Miles and at Origron. But there's also money involved.

(06:26):
By the way, did you see now it was public
on the money, uh that Brian Kelly got at l
s U Lincoln Riley. USC still has not released what
he got, uh, but now we have found out through
sources what he got. According to all sources, he got
a one hundred and ten million dollar deal, which is
more than anyone's ever received. Uh. He had two homes

(06:49):
in Norman, Oklahoma which were listed at like five hundred
thousand dollars, which five thousand dollar homes in Norman, Oklahoma
are gigantic homes. Uh. They gave him five over the
asking price for both homes. It's like a million dollar bonus.
They bought him a six million dollar home in Los
Angeles that's separate from the money he gets in his salary.

(07:11):
And they gave him unlimited use of a private jet
two seven for his family. So when you're talking about
a coach under the age of forty with a young family,
those are the kind of offers that you simply can't say,
you know, Oklahoma is a great job, forget it. I
am USC all the way, but it just it is

(07:31):
so mind boggling when we talk about the amount of
money that they're paying to these coaches. Now, it's just
it's mind blowing that report. I'm not sure the the
accuracy of that report, the one you're citing that as
all the numbers, because first of all us he's a
private school. You'll never get it don't have to be released.

(07:52):
Um And the way we found out, I think with
David Shaw is that there's some tax returns or some
sort of um, you know, some Freedom of if Ration
Act what was granted for Stanford or whatever it was.
I know I wasn't a freedom information request, but what
they got a salary. Um. You know, we always sort
of guess what lay Helgins was at USC. I'll question
some of that report because um uh, A limited private use,

(08:15):
a limited use of a private jet is way more
expective than a hundred million dollar contract like that. That
that feels out of all the things that well, his
his family. If I had an limited private jet, step,
I live in Charlotte, North Carolina, do you know what
I to do. I'd wake up on Sunday morning, be like, hmmm,
no booth, sounds good for dinner tonight, and I'll take
my private plane and I would find my private plane

(08:37):
and I would land probably in Thousand Oaks somewhere like Malibu,
have my dinner. Maybe that's day night in Malibu. Maybe
I don't let me just hop back on my plane,
sleep and fly back to East coast. That's what I
would do. The private plane unlimited use, so they don't
have a limited use of private ate. Now will he
get to use it? Of course I just saw um

(08:57):
the contract was actually the physical contract was put out
for Billy Napier at Florida and the Staples hided out
and it said he had seventy thousand dollars worth of
use on the private plan. I believe outside of recruiting
purposes functions look at right, probably has like it's not
it's not not unlimited use of it. But for Lincoln Riley,
see that's those are two different things between Lincoln Riley

(09:17):
and Brian Kelly in my opinion, because Lincoln Riley Oklahoma
has made the playoff four times, he's over four and
those four times right, he's not one of my playoff game.
His twenty seventeen season, which his first one, is the
head coach he was that was his best team and
that was a team recruited mostly by Bob Stups guy
was correct, and ever since then there's a bit a

(09:38):
little bit of erosion, right, just a little bit. And
he goes to USC now and so far and recruiting is,
you know, fluid as we get to the signing day.
I believe it's Wednesday, the first signing period. So far,
all he's done in California is take the recruits that
he already had Humen Oklahoma and now they're going to USC,
which is good. He's got a five star. It's good,
it's good for USC. But he really hasn't flipped recruiting

(10:01):
quite yet. Now you might because of Mark crist Ball
leaving organ, a bunch of kids have decommitted um, but
we haven't kind of seen this like recruiting bonanza. USC
has had five stars J. T. Daniels, who'll be on
the sidelines for Georgie's not playing at quarterback. He was
Queen yours Ohouse state. He reclassified to go to school early.

(10:22):
USC hyped him up to no end, and he obviously
had to end up Transferranka Slova's beat him out if
he was hurt. So the idea that the Lincoln Riley
is gonna somehow he's better, He's a better coach in
Clay Hilton. But USC does get four and five stars. Well,
they had Bryce Young who's gonna win a Heisman Trophy
later on today, and many d committed from USC and
it ends up at Alabama. All right, you mentioned briefly

(10:45):
your Oregon situation. We gotta get into great detail on that.
We will a little bit later on. Also, Shanon's make
she's gonna be joining us. We're gonna talk some NFL
football because I don't know if you know this, Jeff
Week fourteen, Week fourteen the National Football League, and there
are just so many moving pieces going on right now,

(11:05):
but channons make she will join us coming up next.

this is Fox Football Saturday. We got the Army Navy

(12:10):
game going on right now. Later on the Heispan Trophy
winner will be announced. But we also have a lot
of NFL football, and I know, Jeff you are anxious
to get right to it and joining us right now.
She's on the sidelines for Fox NFL, Shannon Spake, it's
gonna be joining us today. And I understand, Shan, and
you're also made some kind of agreement. I don't know

(12:31):
how you got roped into this to join us every
Saturday for at least for a while. Is that is
that true, Shannon? Anything Danny g asked for yes with
me over the years? Look at that the power of
Danny G. Well, Shannon, we appreciate it, believe me. By
the way, I understand you were in Chicago last week,

(12:53):
were you doing and you're still alive to talk about it.
Get I'm watching that game on TV, and anyone that's
ever been to Soldier Field and Chicago when it's cold,
especially when that wind is blowing, I mean there is
cold and then there's Chicago cold. Just how insufferable was
it to be out there for that game against the
Cardinals just from a weather stamp being on the sidelines,

(13:16):
you know, it might have looked a lot worse than
it felt for me. I had chwo pairs of socks,
two pairs of pants, eight I'm not joking, eight layers
on the top of my body to hat, so I
was really bundled up. And when it was raining, I
know you guys have experienced it like it was more
like coming down straight, like up and down, So you
weren't kind of getting hit in the face with the rain,

(13:37):
like you kind of look around and you'd be like, oh,
it's it's raining. I know the shot that they took
that dude trying to put that park on. I wasn't
having to battle with the parka um, but it was
I mean it listen, it's it's Chicago. It was only
forty degrees and raining. It could have been a lot worse,
a lot worse for December in Chicago, but it was

(14:00):
you know, and I did the report about the field.
I was really thinking that the field was gonna Jeff,
I'm sure you played at Soldier Field many times and
you know the field conditions are just really terrible. Um.
But they had resoughted it because I did. I spoke
with some of um um, some of the guys about
how it was really bad for the Baltimore game. They
said it felt like quicksands, and they had resoughted it
before this game. And it didn't it didn't play into

(14:21):
the storyline of the game as much as I thought
it would. Well, it wasn't as bad as as the
Bears have been playing. Uh, Matt nag he feels like
he's on his last legs. They the Packers have dominated
the Bears, and I continue if you feel that will
continue again tomorrow is nowgi On kind of is on
fire watch right now. Yeah, I mean I think that.

(14:41):
I mean it's unfortunate because I mean, if you if
you've been around the guy, you know he's a he's
a great guy. Um. But I mean, listen, it's it's Chicago,
you know. I mean, it's the Chicago Bears. It's the
Chicago market. I got any airport at O'Hare and each
of the floors and the elevator were named for a
sports team. They don't want to lose games. This is
a it is a hounded is a city that um.

(15:02):
I mean if they love their sports more than anything
and they want to win and they expect to win
and they're not, so, yes, I would. I would say
the time is short, Shan. I know you're going to
be doing the Chargers Giants game, by the way, next Thursday.
I actually got tickets over a month ago for the
Chargers Chiefs game. It's gonna be my first time here.
I'm in l A and the first time I'm gonna

(15:23):
go over to Sophie Stadium. Spend a mint for my
boys and I to go to that game. But you
have this game against the Giants, and the Chargers are
one of those teams that are lumped in with the
Bengals and the Bills, and the Colts and the Raiders, Steelers,
Brown's Broncos. All of these teams are separated by one
game in the standings right now. Trying to get those

(15:46):
last couple of spots. As far as wild card in
the a f C, is it real parody right now?
I mean, how would you how would you sort of
classify what we're seeing with all these teams bunched up,
especially in the a f C right now? Uh? Is it?
Is it equal footing or is it mediocre football? I mean,

(16:06):
what exactly are you seeing out there? Well? I think
there's a little bit of both. But I think sometimes
you see good and then sometimes you see that. I
mean the Vikings, I go and then they lose the Lions,
and you're like, Okay, which team is going to show up?
I feel like you could say that with a hundred teams.
Right You've got Panthers who win this game in this
dramatic fashion against the Cardinals, you know, and then they
go and lose to Miami. So I you know, it's

(16:26):
just I don't you don't know what to make of
of a lot of teams in the league right now. Um,
as far as this game, I mean, I was personally like,
I can't wait to see Justin Herbert like a field
level with that arm of his because his he's just
got a rocket, right, and to see him kind of
throw those passes. But he's not gonna have Keenan Allen,
which is a real bummer because he's I mean, he's
one of the best in the National Football League and
you want to see the best playing every Sunday. Uh,

(16:48):
you know, he's on the COVID reserve. They did just
activate Mike Williams, which will be really really cool. And
then again on the on the you know, on the
Giant side, they are just banged up left and right.
I mean, we know Kwan is not not operating in
a hundred for scent, we don't have Daniel Jones. Um,
you know, it's it's yeah, there's just a lot. Kenny
Golladay is is banged up. Coming into the year. We
actually had the Giants week one, and you just think

(17:09):
about how much sort of um hope and anticipation for
the season. And I'm listening to the you know, the
training camp tours on Serious x M and you're all
this excitement and they're working on this and they're doing this,
and we've got Kadarius Tony and then the season starts
and it's just like huh again, you know, so um
yeah again. But I think anyone, I mean, it's the NFL,

(17:30):
right Jeff, you know there's more than most like anyone
can win any given Sunday. Uh and and if this
year has certainly been even more of an example of that,
I think is going to piss off more Giants fans
TOMORROWLS to go ask him. We're at lunch right now.
I'll go ask him as soon as we get off
the call. He he likes to do that, right. You
know that you've made an impact on the on the

(17:50):
market when when you've got your your your Twitter is
blowing up after after the game. But don't the Giants
can deserve it right like we're we're we're sold this
idea of discipline and we're two things the right way
and we're not going to make mental mistakes. And then
that's all they do. Now. I know they're injured a quarterback,
but at some point, right all that talk about doing

(18:11):
things the right way, it's gonna be frustrating for Giants
fans because you've watched them play. We've all watched them play.
They don't play like their coach preachers they should be playing.
Is there concerned if they don't win this game or
really don't don't finish strong. I know that Dan Jones
is not playing that Joe Judge would would would be
out of a job. Well, I don't. I mean, so listen,
I know at the beginning of the year they were
there was a lot of talk about this is the

(18:31):
third year for Daniel Jones, this is the this is
the pivotal year, this is the year. I heard Dad
Gettleman say that. I heard everybody from top to bottom
say that. And then you get into the season You're like, okay,
well is it again. It's just like, I mean, every
market wants their team to win, but when you're going
to markets like New York, or you go to markets
like Chicago, these major markets with that, they're they're just

(18:52):
they believe the colors of their team and they have
since they were you know, their grandparents were sitting in
those stands. It's a different level of expectations to win again.
So as far as Joe Judge is concerned, right, you
have to take into consideration that last year was so
incredibly different and he's trying to implement these offenses and

(19:12):
he's trying to do all these things on zoom and
virtually um but there hasn't been you know, the record
shows it, and obviously the style of play and then
the level of play there hasn't been a huge jump
this year. I don't know the answer to that. Will
they give him more time? Um? I don't know the
answer to that, but I do think that Daniel Jones
is one that needs to be um, just based on
what I heard at the beginning of the season with

(19:34):
this being his third season. Shannon, I know, we got
a long way to go. And as you said, weak
to weak, we don't know. I mean, Jeff and I
go back and forth on a you know, like you
don't know week to week. But I mean, if the
season were to end today, my guess is that Tom
Brady would be the m v P and Bill Belichick
would be the coach of the year. Have you even
thought about the possibility because the uh Super Bowl obviously

(19:58):
will be right here at so Far Stadium of a
Belichick Brady matchup Tampa Bay in New England's Super Bowl.
I mean it would be I mean, Jeff and I
have talked about that. It would be the most watched
super Bowl ever. Um. But I mean the possibility of
that is just mind boggling, is it not? And and
a real possibility, Yeah, And I think outside of just

(20:20):
Bill Belichick getting the credit, I think it's incredible what
we've seen out of Mac Jones. Right when when we
watched the draft every year and you wonder which quarterback
is the most NFL already quarterback? Uh, I mean, I'm
sure people had Mac Jones high on that list, but
to think that he could do what he's doing, certainly,
we know Bill Belichick in his style. We got to
cover one of their games this year. Was the first
time I'd ever covered Coach Belichick. We got to sit

(20:42):
in a room with Mac Jones. Really great guy, I
mean just and just so much fun to watch on
the field, and you just know that he gets it
and and talks a lot about the Saban uh, like
the learning under Saban and now moving into Belichick and
what he learned under Nick Saban during his time in
Alabama being so beneficial to get him ready to not

(21:02):
only move obviously into a similar style ish right, um
coaches obviously from the same same kind of background. Um.
But I think just handling everything that comes with the NFL,
the saving way to process all of that stuff as
he's done it just tremendously. Um. But yes, I think listen,
that will be a Super Bowl that Oh my goodness,

(21:23):
it will be insane leading up to it. If that's
what we're going to get. Well, we we've we've spent
a lot of time here talking about kind of the
ups and downs the NFL. But in the end, the
two favorites right now and when they're their conferences are
Tampa Bay in Kansas City. So in the end, fourteen weeks,
all the ups and downs, the two teams that we
met last year are the two teams that are favored.
Do you do you see anyone Packers, Cardinals, Bills, anyone

(21:47):
else being able to derail a rematch the Super Bowl? Well,
I'm never gonna You know, the Aaron Rodgers thing is interesting,
right because you know that he's closer to the end
than he is the beginning, and you know he's got
a chip on his shoulder and he seems even more
angry this year than he has been in the past. Um.
But you know, when you get into those big games,
I think that's the question, right, We've we've seen it
in the past. Can he get past um and and

(22:09):
get make it to that Super Bowl level? Um? I
like the Cardinals just because of all of the parts
and pieces that they have. I think they're explosive, they're dynamic,
They've got a great defense. We think that J. J.
Watt might be coming back and that will just add
a whole another level to that defense. So I do
like the Cardinals as well as someone that could make
it happen. I really like what where Kyler has sort

(22:30):
of um, he's he's progressed so nicely. I covered him
his first year. I covered him in college as well,
and to see the way he's sort of matured in
this system. Click Kingsberry as well. It's funny. So I
I did a Arkansas Texas Tech football game, Uh, Cliff
Kingsberry and Brett Bielama, and I was like, Hey, these
coaches could not be more different in terms of who

(22:51):
they are as people and their style couldn't be um
any different. And I remember Cliff Kingsbury afterwards, he got
on a press conference and saying that he was upset
because Bilma had recruited in Texas and saying, you can't
win without a fullback. And here here Cliptingsberry. I said,
you might go, well, look at you with a run game. Huh.
He's definitely like evolved in the in the NFL, and

(23:13):
and I think it's it's fascinating to see. All right, well, Shannon,
A couple of things here. First of all, I do
not believe you're gonna need eight layers of clothing at
so FI Stadium. Just a prediction there. And now that
Danny g has hooked you on our show, we're not
letting go. I'm sorry. That's right, We're not letting go.
And that's uh, that is your fate. You're gonna be
hanging out with us, just for a little brief time

(23:35):
every Saturday. Shannon doing a great job. Is always look
forward to seeing out at the Chargers Giants game. And
we'll talk to you next week. Thank you, guys, have
a great Saturday. Thank you so much. And it's Spake
Jonius right there doing a great job. Fox NFL sideline reporter.
All right, on the other side, we got my Heisman update.
But first let's find out what's trending right now. He's

(23:56):
in the house. Ralph Irvan rafy yo, how are you today?
I'm rolling? But you know, five minutes to play in
the first half, as Army has a ten seven lead
over Navy. Navy looking to a kick a field goal
that would tie this game. And as great as this

(24:17):
tradition is, all I can think is because they're playing
this game. There's no NFL football today. That is correct.
But you know what, having had the great lectury of
actually attending one of these Army Navy games, I like it.
I like that this last Saturday of college football, once
we get into the Bulls and everything else, is reserved
for this game. It deserves it that I can understand that.

(24:41):
By the way, fifty three yard field goal Mrs Left
sort remains Army ten Navy seven, uh, just under five
minutes to play in the first half of that contest.
So again, it's the final college football game of the
regular season. It is the first NBA game of the Saturday.
At the half, the Clippers with at lead over the

(25:03):
Orlando Magic, Luke Kennard Reggie Jackson each with eleven points
as l A has come back to take the five
point halftime lead. Other news from the NBA, it's being
reported and the New Orleans Pelicans are saying Zion Williamson's
tune ups being dialed back. He's slowing down the workouts
because he continues to experience sore nows and his surgically

(25:25):
repaired right foot, and imaging shows that his bone is
not healing as well as it had been as the
fifth metatarsal, So the Zion Williamson return for the NBA
season put on hold. We'll see if he even gets
onto the floor during this coming season. On the college

(25:47):
basketball hardwood, couple of games in progress. Number eight Kansas
a sixty two thirty two lead over Missouri. One to
play in the second half of that contest, seven and
a half to play in the first half. A numbers that.
Number fifteen Yukon a sixteen all tie with St. Bonaventure

(26:08):
about to get started. UNC Greensboro playing at number Tennessee.
Another college football note, Claune Sataki extended through the seven season.
He's staying in Provo while Penn State's hired former Miami
Hurricanes head coach manny d has to be their new
defensive coordinator in linebacker coach. In Florida State followed suit
hiring a former Miami head coach, that being Randy Shannon

(26:31):
to be their new defensive coordinator in linebacker coach. As
we sent it back, it is Steve Hartman and Jeff Schwartz.
You're in Fox sports RANDI, Hi, Ralph, thank you very much. Okay,
it's that time update Heisman update before we get to
our heisman update, Jeff, you do know that the Army

(26:55):
Navy game has gone under fifteen straight years. Yeah, but
there were two towns on the opening drives. I thought
this game was always in Philly. It's in New York
this year. I'm kind of confused. Yeah, always in Philly.
Of the year I went was the year I had
a chance to meet President Obama. Actually he shook his
hand there FedEx Field. It was the only time it
was ever it was in Landover. Uh, it's always usually

(27:18):
in philadel Bia. Once in a while. They moved around.
It's moved around I think for the for the for
of night. So yeah, I remember it was at the
Rose Bowl one year years ago. They actually they yeah,
they're like nine three. They moved ahole. They paid money.
That's forty years ago. That's a long years ago. Four

(27:40):
years Okay, yeah, exactly. This is before you were born.
But I was very much aligned, but it that way.
But yeah, the under fifty and and the over under
on this Army Navy game thirty four and a half,
lowest number of any FBS game the entire year, the
entire year, and pro women teen points right now with
about five minutes to go. Oh uh in the first half,

(28:02):
so they got curious with the second half under will
be at My thought about it's that's kind of curious
what it's gonna be. It's a fast moving game because
all these two teams is run all right. So there
you go fifteen straight years. Though if you had doubled
down every year, you'll be rolling along all right. As
far as the Heisman, we don't have obviously any top three,
and no, I cannot reveal my vote. I did vote
last Monday. Um. One of the things I did say,

(28:24):
and we both agreed on this going in to last week,
that it was Bryce Young's opportunity to win it. I
never even got your thoughts, and I've been waiting for this.
On Alabama's performance against the Georgia defense that we had
hailed all season long. It's not just the best in

(28:46):
college football this year, but one of the great defenses
of all time, and Brice Young just carved them up.
I mean, obviously he's gonna win the Heisman Trophy today
because of that. But what did you make of that game? Well,
ever been against Nick Saban again, I'll tell you that
that that's never gonna happen. He was a six point dog.
Whence the last time Alabama was a six point was like, well,

(29:07):
I think it was like they weren't a dog, like
straight games something crazy like that. Um wow, I mean
a couple of things that really surprised me, just as
a as a kind of an offensive line geek is,
like their offensive line was not playing well and they
played fabulous against Georgia. Like I can't explain how they
went from not being able to block l s U

(29:28):
and Auburn to be able to block Georgia. And the
reason why Bryce Young to the ball so well is
because he had plenty of time to throw. There was
the all day to throw because Georgia never hit him.
And and that's what happens. We often say is that
pass restors and secondaries. The passenger secondary, like what is
what makes the other one? It does feel like it
is pass us, right, pass us can really help a
secondary at and they weren't getting any of it. There

(29:49):
was no pass to us. So, um, really impressive by
Bryce Young. You're right, he probably does win the Heisman tonight,
even though I think the best player of the team
is Will Anderson. But the impact that that Will hasn't
a game is just far different than than the quarterback obviously, right,
and that's why Will is not going to win the award.
And it really is not well, I will say this now,
you remember my theory from the very beginning. I said

(30:12):
this from the start, I want to know what you
did in the biggest game on the schedule. And I
felt the two biggest games throughout this entire college football
season where obviously Alabama beating Georgia in the SEC Championship
game and Michigan beating Ohio State, those two games to me,

(30:32):
really stood out on the college football schedule. And because
of that, Bryce Young is in New York and so
is Aidan Hutchinson, who had three sacks in that game
against Ohio State. That's why those two guys, in my opinion,
belong there, because what did you do on the biggest
game of your schedule? And in my opinion, those were

(30:54):
the two most defining games of this college football season. Oh,
it's just it's just crazy, because I yeah, that is
that isn't there that you should use, But it really
doesn't excuse some other games where they didn't play very well. Yeah,
and it's one of those years where it just kind
of is one of those years that's not perfect. It's

(31:15):
just not it's not a perfect year. It's okay, well
we want we honestly went into the final couple of
weeks without really a Heisman moment. I mean it just
it was that way. Um. By the way, another guy
that's in New York is Kenny Pickett, the pit quarterback,
forty two touchdowns, tremendous year they won the a c C.
Who thought that would happen before the season? Again, what
do you think of the kneel down play? That now

(31:36):
all of a sudden, the n C as saying never again.
I don't know why it wasn't called on the field
at that point. They have to call it because someone
don't get it really really hurt. Did you hear what
the Wake Forest coach said after the game. He goes, well,
if you're not gonna call that, we're gonna fake slide
every single time our quarterback runs the ball. We're just
gonna fake slide all the way through. Correct, it should
be a sports one conduct because, um, the reason why

(31:59):
everyone is because if if he if he does that,
next time, someone's gonna run and just hit him as
hard as he can and they're gonna be penalized for
that and be thrown out a game possibly, and they
shouldn't have they shouldn't have to happen. So I'm good
with this rule. Can you pick it? Pretty interesting? Skipping
a New Year's Six Bowl, um, which really we haven't

(32:21):
seen that much of, especially from a team in Pittsburgh
who hasn't been to New Year's six Bowl since what Utah, Pittsburgh?
Oh four? Whenever that was? Oh wait, I should say, um,
whenever that that there was? Oh four was that game?
And that that that to me is a big deal.
You know, we're talked about missing games and again I
don't I don't care what can you pick it? Does?
I'm just saying for missing bowl games, a New Year's

(32:43):
six Bowls are legit bowl game. We haven't had many players,
especially that position quarterback, sit out of a New Years
six Bowl game. Well, but we we talked about this
chef about the expanded playoff possibility. We're gonna get into
that a little bit later on in detail. Um, because
of how that all played out with the so called
playoffs this year. But remember we were talking about if

(33:04):
they were to expand to twelve teams. Let's say you're
the five seed, you're looking at four games. You're looking
at a four game playoff, and if you're a quarterback
projected to be a top five pick in the draft,
are you gonna play four more games? Or you're gonna say,
you know what, it's been a great season. All the
best to you guys, good luck. I'm sitting this out.

(33:25):
I think I think you would play if it was
a playoff. Really yeah, I'm not so sure on that.
I mean, you couldn't talk about I mean, for instance,
let's say, all right, let's say in an eight team
playoff or twelve team playoff, top four seeds getta buy
so you got five verses twelve all the way time.
And then let's say you're a five seed or a
sixth seed, meaning you have to play that extra game

(33:47):
to go all the way, and you're not as good
as the one or two seeds, right, you're the the
five or six Seedna am I gonna risk it? I
just think we're gonna I mean, we have a situation
this year because we don't we talk about this quarterback class.
I don't know if Picket's gonna go high in the
I don't know where these quarterbacks are gonna go. But
everyone's looking two years from now with Bryce Young and

(34:09):
c J. Strout. I mean, those are two big time quarterbacks.
And Bryce Young stock went through the roof after that
Georgia game. What do you do if you're Bryce Young
this coming year? Are you gonna gonna roll it out
there for another year? Especially if they go on to
win a championship this year? We mentioned that with Trevor
Lawrence a year ago, but last year was a weird
year with the whole COVID situation. Um we saw guys

(34:31):
sit out last year, didn't hurt their draft stock, Jamaar
Chase Parsons go down the list. Guys didn't even play
in did not hurt their draft stock. So what do
you do if you're Bryce Young playing another year or
just sort of sit it out and say I'll see
you next time at the draft, or think you I
think you place next year? There's no guarantee he goes

(34:53):
um as as high as he uh as he thinks.
If he sits out of season, what if what three
or four other guys kind of have. Kenny Pickett was
on anyone's radar before the season. Now now we'll come out.
There's no I think he there's no way he sits
out next season. Um we we still I mean this season,
we didn't see that as a trend yet, right, we

(35:13):
saw two years ago because of COVID, But this year
everyone still played at least I bleeve and so I
would I think that's what people will still play. I
don't think they would sit out. All right. It is
now halftime as Army, having won four of the last
five games against Navy lead thirteen is seven at a half.
So it's projecting over right now that over under thirty

(35:36):
four and a half spent under fifteen straight years. All right.
On the other side, we've been waiting for Jeff Schwartz
to have the answer. We know who's out as the
Oregon coach. Question is who's coming in. Jeff will have
the answer coming up next, Steve Hartman, Jeff Schwartz. This
is Fox Football Saturday, all right. Jeff Shorts sat out

(36:04):
last Saturday because his Oregon Ducks guy wiped out. How
did he get wiped out twice by almost the identical
score against Utah. Maybe they're better than us, apparently much
much better, much better. All right, so let's let's do
a little update. Now, let's start with Krista Ball taking
the job at Miami. Surprise. I mean, we had heard

(36:27):
that Oregon was rolling out like a ten year, eighty
plus million dollar deal to keep Crista Ball, and he
said bye bye to Miami. Are you surprised? Um? So,
I'm not surprised because it is his hometown, that's where
he went to school, that's where we want championships. His boosters,
his friends all want to take the job. I am

(36:49):
a little bit surprised because he left behind a very
very good, rostered organ UM and he had said more
couple times. He even went on UM a radio program
in Oregon with John Canzano the day after he went
to Miami. I can't believe he did. I can give
him credit for it and said, look, I left a

(37:11):
great roster for whoever the new coaches, and he was
building something here that he worked his butt off the
But I believe that that the coach crystal ball game,
everything he had to organ. I didn't think he leaves.
I thought he would stay. Obviously, I guess the poll
to go back home was um was bigger than than
what he's he's done in Eugene. But this is a
tough job, man. You know people say, well that you

(37:31):
can just turn around. I'll keep hearing that about Texas,
and you know in Nebraska, USC just as easy just
flipping around. They've won ten games one time to join
the a c C C Conference in two thousand and four.
They have not won that conference one single time yet.
Now Clemson looks like they're taking a turn for the worst.
So maybe this is Miami's time to rise. Um, But

(37:52):
Mario has his work cut out for him, and there's
gonna be pressure on him to win more than was
an organ He answered to one person organ right, Phil Knight.
He answers to seventy five people in Miami, right. So Um,
it's it's gonna be Um, it's gonna be tougher for him. Um,
But I wish him the best of Look, I have
no ill will for for Coach. I texted him the
other day. I like coach I went back home. I

(38:15):
have no problem with decision to go. I really don't Um.
And I think, like I said, I think he gave
us all when he was with organ and he left
the program better than when he got the job. I mean,
what more can you ask for? Right? We we won
ten games twice and when a Rose Bowl won a
conference twice. So I'm it's a business man like. It
sucks as a bummer. I don't want to see him leave,
but okay, let's let's move it on. Let's find other coach.

(38:36):
Al right. So, as you mentioned Phil Knight, Nike controls
the Oregon football program. They poured about a billion dollars
into that program over the years to build it to
where it is right now, from afterthought to one of
the prominent programs in the country. Chip Kelly is a
favorite of Phil Knight, no question about that. He loves

(38:56):
Chip Kelly. So we've got this buyout now, Chris to
ball owes Oregon nine million and nine million dollar buyout. Ironically,
the exact same number that Chip Kelly still has sitting
on the table will not expire until January after their
Holiday Bowl matchup, which is December against NC State. So
uh And by the way, U c l A is

(39:18):
also now a Nike school and where they're in lawsuits
Jordan's uh. And they had the deal with under Armor
that's still in litigation right now, is under armed and
try to get out of that deal. Um, but do
you think Phil Knight just jumps in hands, I'm a
check for nine million dollars or waves somehow compensates U

(39:38):
c l A in a certain way. Because I was
just talking to Ralph Irvin. Apparently Nike doesn't exactly put
money into the pockets of u c l A. It's
just the fact that they can label themselves, you know,
with the Jordan brand. How do you think this is
going to operate? And do you think ultimately Chip Kelly
will be the next Oregon coach. Let's have two minutes
right now to explain this. So there's is tier one

(40:00):
of candidates. Okay, it's it's Phil Knight saying I want
these guys. One of them I believe is urban Meyer.
Will find out whether or not that's true the next
couple of days. Um, there's other guys. There's a there's
a there's a secret like no one knows who the
other college there's a pro guy, which we all assumes
Urban Meyer, and there's a high level college guy that
no one has picked up on who that is. Then

(40:22):
there's kind of like a Tier one B, which Dan Landing,
who broke yesterday. That's kind of part of Tier one B.
An up and coming coordinator, no a coaching experience, but
highly regarded, great recruiter, high energy. I talked about people
Georgia and say who raved about him? Right, And then
there's tier two and Tier two it's Chip Kelly and
Justin Wilcox. And so if Oregon goes to tier to
tier two, I think they would go Wilcox first. But

(40:43):
if they do that, that means they missed out on
Whoever the top you look an NFL gu might be
Kelling Moore at and the Cowboys. It might, it might
not be urban, but there's just a lot of talk
about urban, especially with Weird weird enough to day the
timing broke of things aren't really working well in jack
and Jacksonville guy, and maybe there's time to separate, Like
it just kind of weird that broke the day before,

(41:04):
the whispers on the organ message boards Urban meyers. So um,
it's just it's it's a lot of fun to follow
this from Afar obviously broke yesterday, that Dan Lanning had
the job doesn't feel likely to happen, But Chipp and
Wilcox will be fallback. So if they if they miss
on who the top guys, they want those guys. And
I think if if Chip is forced to bring new
defensive coordinator long and Wilcox was gonna hire a great

(41:27):
od see, we'd we'd win um with champions I don't know,
but we'd win. All right, there is a breakdown from
Jeff Short's on the future of the Oregon job. But
what about the future of the college football playoff? What
happened this year, how it affects next year? Coming up next?
All right, rolling along on this big college football Saturday.

(41:49):
Army Navy going on today and coming up in about
three hours, about four hours, we're gonna find out the
winner of the eighties seven Heisman Trophy. By the way,
earlier today, Jeff I saw on College Game Day they
had Pete Dawkins, the Army Heisman winner of nineteen fifty eight.
He's the second oldest living Heisman when he's eighty three

(42:12):
years old, by the way, looking great out there rooting
on an Army in this game against Navy. The oldest
living Heisman Trophy winner, though, is much older than that.
Johnny lu Jack, legendary Notre name quarterback won the award
Jeff in nineteen forty seven. On January four, coming up
here in less than a month, he will be nineties

(42:35):
seven years old. Did you vote that year? I did
not vote that year, but I believe me I know
probably more about that vote that year than the a
That doesn't surprise me at all. Yeah, I am a
little obsessed with this and uh anyway, so we're gonna
find out. Look, it's gonna be Bryce Young. He's gonna

(42:57):
be handed the trophy, by the way, first Alabama quarterback
ever to win the Heisman Trophy when you consider all
the great quarterbacks they've had over the years, the Joe
Namas of the world, that Ken Stablers, even Bart Starr,
by the way, played on a winless Alabama team before
heading to the Green Bay Packers. But in recent years,
Agent McCarron was runner up to a tongue of by
Low was runner up. Mac Jones was third last year

(43:19):
in the voting. But Bryce Young, believe it or not,
will be Alabama's first ever Heisman winner and and and quarterback. Yeah,
first quarterback. Albeit Alabama had never had a Heisman winner
until Nick Saban showed up, which is amazing, right, I mean,
think of the legendary Bear Bryant, all those great Alabama teams,

(43:39):
they never had anyone close to win the Heisman Trophy.
But this will be the fourth one, mark ingram Derrick Henry,
obviously DeVante Smith last year, and now Bryce Young. There
is value to this trophy. You do understand that. Like
when Johnny Manzel won the Heisman Trophy at Texas A
and M. They estimated that that was about a thirty

(43:59):
million dollar bonanza for Texas C and M. With Johnny
Manzel walking away with that trophy. Oh yeah, you know
it's it's so it's a huge it's a huge accomplishment.
I remember when when Marcus Maria want Marcus Baroda one
organ and like to think about the Oregan football program
and where they had been. I mean, you know, Oregan
has not been good to last twenty five years or so,

(44:21):
and to have a highs and winner from at Oregon
was incredible. It's a huge honor. But this year obviously
feels weird just because you know, Bryce Sung is good,
not great, and didn't play great in all the moments
they had this year, but he played his best in
the in the biggest game, and that's what gets in
this award. Yeah, exactly. And of course they end up
a ranked number one at the end of the season,

(44:41):
and that all came from their victory against Georgia. So
let's take a look at this college football playoff and
what happened this year and how it affects moving forward.
For this so called playoff in Division one football FBS football.
So you have four teams in a playoff and three
of your power conferences, first time this has ever happened.

(45:03):
Three of your five power conferences are shut out, the A,
S C, the Big twelve, and the Pack twelve. You've
got two SEC schools. You have a Big ten school
and then the Group of five school And by the way,
this this Cincinnati situation, there are so many layers to
this moving forward, because the argument always was there's no

(45:25):
possible path for a group of five school to get
into the playoff. Well, as it worked out, Cincinnati got
into the playoffs. So all this noise about expanding the playoffs,
people will say, why why do we need to expand it.
We've told you all along from the very beginning, there
is a path for a group of five conference school

(45:45):
to get into the playoffs, and we just showed how
they did it. They were undefeated, they beat Notre Dame
on the road, and that's why Cincinnati is there. So
that could be an argument against expanding the playoff. And
by the way, from what I understand, they're at an
impass anyway right now trying to figure out expanding the playoff.
But on the flip side, Jeff again, a c C,

(46:06):
Big twelve, Pack twelve Patrols only had two teams ever
make this playoff. Can they make enough noise where they're
forced in some way to expand the current four team playoff?
So all for Cincinnati to make a playoff was having
to undefeated seasons back to back and regular seasons. It

(46:29):
took Notre Dame to not be as good as you
know expecting, and and and and to lose a Cincinnati.
It took the Pack twelve, a CC and Big twelve
to have winners that were unexpected to start the season.
That's all took to get to Sandy in the playoff. Um,
if all that happens again next year, you know, I
have been against expand the playoff mostly because I don't
think it matters, right like the you know, Alabama Georgia, Michigan.

(46:51):
You know, those three of the best three teams, and
they're gonna win the championship. Right, Go to twelve games
doesn't change very much of that. Just it's more football
and everyone gets to say we're in. You Utah wins
that we're in. We're in the playoff, Pittsburgh, we're in
the playoff, right, Okay, um, fine, in fact, that's the
way we want to do it. Okay, whenever it's more football,
I'm not going to say no to better games. But
there's no way, you know, and I have argued this

(47:13):
now for for this last year. You know, Oregon made
a championship run, right we we beat Florida State in
loss Ohio State. I'm just letting you guys know, no
matter how good a PACTROL school gets, winning four straight games,
if you're not at top four seed against the likes

(47:33):
of like Ohio State, Clemson, Oklahoma, Bama, Georgia, Michigan, winning
three or four games in a row like that is
not going to happen. It actually benefits the Pack twelve
or the Big twelve for anyone else to only have
to play two playoff games to win. Now you have
to get in obviously, and the path is very narrow

(47:54):
to make that happen. But this is not going to
change who the winner is. But it does give us
more intrigued. Right the a CC channel, they see title game,
which was good for most of the first half. It
gives intrigue. Go Pittsburgh, you're in. Congratulations, right, You're in
the playoff. Utah right? You you you beat Organ twice,
You're in the playoff. You know. It gives us you know,
Cincinnati and U T. S A and some of the

(48:14):
smaller you G five schools, San Diego State or Utah State.
You're in the playoff. Yea, I'm I'm fine with that.
I am okay with that. But let's not pretend it
has a new winner. However, all that being said, this
is the perfect year for a twelve team playoff, right
because of all the chaos of college football and how
different this year was. Right, we have unexpected winners. Who
would have thought Baylor again, Utah, pitt would all be

(48:38):
winners of their conferences, even Michigan. No one thought Michigan
was gonna do it. This going to the first team
to make a playoff who started the year and ranked
um so okay, but so this is the year to
do it right, and this is I think we have
the most castes here. Next year might go back to
just be in. The big dogs are the big dogs.
But I don't get why we're not expanding quicker because

(49:00):
there's a lot of money to be made and expanding now.
Part of it, I think is the Pack twelve conference,
the alliance that the big ten saying, hey, we're not
gonna let ESPN have this entire thing, but as they
have now, right, we want this to be bit out
like that, like the NFL playoffs or all four networks
get at least one game. Um, we want this to
be you know, they're battling over bull sites, neutral site.

(49:21):
I would love for the first round to be neutral sites.
You want to play ball games afterwards, go ahead, you
know the Rose Bowl, which the game that we both love.
Kind of a pain in the butt when it comes
to a lot of this stuff, right, they don't want
to move off January one. They don't want to lose
their pageantry blah blah blah blah um. And then obviously
there's a lot now about automatic qualifiers. You know, the
SEC doesn't want that because that gets more of their

(49:42):
teams in right. Automatic qualifiers allow for a subpar Pack
twelve team or Big twelve team who has an upset
in the title game to get into the playoffs. So
they're they're they're impast at that end um. It's actually
going backwards. I thought the momentum was closer and not
feels like it's going the other direction. Yeah, well, you're
absolutely right. In fact, that completely broken off talks. Right now.

(50:06):
My feeling on a playoff is somewhere where you are,
whether you go from four to six, six to eight,
eight to twelve, I mean, all you're really doing is
still creating a non playoff in my opinion, And like
I said, all you have to do, I mean, right now,
we got South Dakota stay taken on Villanova. Every other
level FCS, Division two, Division three, and A, i A,

(50:29):
whatever level of college football outside of the FBS you want,
they have a legitimate playoff. And it would be very
similar to the n c A A tournament basketball, where
you have ten FBS conferences and you have ten conference
champions they're all automatic. You win your conference championship, you're in,
and then you have six at large bids. You have

(50:50):
a sixteen school playoff where at the end somebody's going
to actually be named n c A A champion for
the first time ever. And did asion one football? I
know that's not gonna happen because one of the one
of the things about these bowl games as you see
these lineup of bowl games, and Jeff, you participated obviously

(51:10):
back in your Oregon days, why are these important? You know,
why are they playing these games? Well, they're playing these
games because one, it gives extra practice time for these
coaches and the teams, and that is insanely invaluable as
you get ready for the following season. Also, under the
current bowl format, at the end of every bowl game,

(51:31):
you're handed at trophy whatever the sport is there like
this where their forty trophies added out, where forty schools
end up winning their final game, as opposed to what
happens in the you know, the n c basketball tournament. Um,
but if if like you said, it creates a lot
of who cares game. But we'll also we remember what

(51:52):
happened with Maryland Baltimore County UH sixteen seed beating in
the number one overall seed Virginia a couple of years
ago on the tournament. So if you were to take
my format right, ten conference champions and that concludes Conference USA,
the MAC and all these conference champions, throw Utah stayed
in there from the mountainst Conference, and then six at

(52:13):
large schools and you just have one versus sixteen, two
versus fifteen all the way down. What I would do
in the opening round is I would have the favorite team,
the better seed, host the first round game and then
go to neutral sits the rest of the way. I
don't see why that's any worse or any better than
the current format we have now. I know it's not
gonna happen. It's fantasy land, but I don't understand why

(52:36):
they simply can't go to that kind of a format
where the guest scene is is taken out outside of
a guest figure out which six at large teams are
gonna pick. But every conference champion should have a spot
in a playoff. Do we have do we have breaking news? Uh?
Sound anyone? Do we have any breaking news of Sam's
always reading breaking news ranking news from Fox Sports? Uh?

(53:03):
John Canzano reports Organ has a new football coach. It
is Dan Landing, who was reported yesterday as football coach.
Now I've been confirmed by uh the University of organ Wow.
Wow wow. All right, on the other side, let's get
some reaction on that, and what does that mean for

(53:24):
Chip Kelly at u c l A. We'll tell you
coming up next. First, the goal from the too lovaside's
tie quarterback follow ties forward touchdown heavy Mitch him. That
is Pete Madhurst via Navy Sports Network, Naval Academy Leading
Army right now fourteen thirteen. Looks like they will probably

(53:47):
go over, but not done yet over under a thirty
four and a half. All right, you heard right before
the break. Uh, it is now apparently official. The dan
lanning the defensive coordinating, they're outside linebackers. Coach at Georgia
is the new coach at Oregon. By the way, a
little background on landing. Like you talked about a guy

(54:07):
that came out of nowhere. This guy played linebacker at
William Jewel College in Missouri. Is last year playing there
was two thousand seven. He's only thirty five years old.
The story is he was coaching at a local high school,
but he really wanted to be a college coach, and

(54:27):
he apparently had met Todd Graham at some kind of
coaching clinic. He drove to Pittsburgh when Graham had the
job there to convince him to hire him as a
grad assistant, which he did. And then when Graham went
to Arizona State, he followed him there as a grad assistant.
Was a recruiting coordinator, you know, one of those fringe
guys that hang around these programs. Eventually, Mike Norville, who

(54:51):
had been on the staff of Arizona State, got the
job at Memphis, and he followed him there where he
finally got like an actual coaching job. And then Georgia
hired him is an outside linebackers coach in ten and
then when melt Tucker left Georgia, he was named the
defensive coordinator. So at age thirty five, a guy who
played college at William Jewell College, who by the way,

(55:15):
was bypassed for one of the worst FBS jobs a
year ago, the Kansas job he applied for that did
not get that job. Now he's your coach at Oregon
with that background. Is he is he ready for this job?
Thirty five year old coach with that background to take
over the expectations? Uh? And again, no, no job is

(55:39):
filled unless it gets the green light. From Phil Knight.
So what do you make of this Dan landing higher
at Oregon? Well, I don't know. I don't know much
about him other than try to try to gather the
last couple of days. Um. But people from that I
talked to their no, the SEC football speak very highly

(56:00):
of him. Um. You know, high energy, great recruiter, new
new school thinker. Um. And obviously who he hires and
who keeps on staff are very important. But if you
look at his who he's recruited and that typically is
very important obviously to winning. Um, he is done a
fantastic job at Georgia. The entire you know kind of
all the young players on defense are all are all

(56:24):
guys that he has his name attached to, as far
as who he's recruited. So I'm sorry, I was like,
I don't really know. Um. Look, Rob Mullins are athletic director.
Has hired Mark Cristo ball, right, He's hired Kelly Graves,
who was a fantastic women's basketball coach. He's hiring Dana Altman. Um,
he's hired good coaches wherever you know he's needed to
an organist. Um, well, it's hard to tell what Willy

(56:48):
would have been because he was six and six his
first year or seven and six and then he left.
I mean, I don't know what he would have been.
He was seven and six his first year, coming off
a four and eight season the year before. Who was
health which last year? So I mean tag could have
been better. I don't know with different talent there um,
But I trust Rob Mullins because he hired good coaches
in the past, and so we'll see how this one

(57:08):
plays out. It's not as sexy as earned Meyer or
anyone else, but reports broke yesterday, it feels like that
was the way to go. Marcus Freeman, who's um? Who
is um? Who's no names? New head coach? Yeah? Years old,
years old and only been at notre name one year
even less experience, Yeah yeah yeah, So well it'd be
interesting to see there. Dan Lanning, all right, So then

(57:32):
that means that Chip Kelly, I guess as staying at
U c l A. But at what cost? I mean,
if anyone knows this guy, it's you, um and being
that I'm the U c l A guy and he
was the offensive coordinator you're last year at Oregon before
becoming the head coach at Oregon. If he stays at

(57:52):
u c l A. What should we expect out of
the U c l A football program. Well, what worries
me about U c l A is they had a
lot of older players this year. They did a lot
then have a lot of younger players. And so so
is this gonna be like we're only gonna have a
good team one every four years. And by the way,
eight and four this year, not a single win against
a team that ended up with a winning record, not one. Um, yeah,

(58:17):
so um, I'm yeah, I'm he just he's got to
change quarterback. He's got to change. Um, how about defensive coordinators?
Not quarterback? I meant defense, Cordiner, Sorry, I'm just trying
to read through a buch of these organ tweets. Now
he needs to change, he change, He changed defense corners. Now,
we had talked about possibly, you know, if he came
to Oregan, what would he have to do with Oregon

(58:39):
to change things up? And one of them was higher.
He can't have Jerry as in our hope he's defense
quarter anymore. Jerry has been with him everywhere, went to
fill it with them San Francisco. So I'd be a
tough personal decision for him. To move on from from
as UM and then obviously recruiting, and the recruiting hasn't
been great at U c l A since he's been there,
so um, but I look, Chim Killy is still innovative
offensive coach. There's there's no doubt about it. It's just defensively,

(59:02):
you have to adapt and that's what he has to
do this next Season's got to adapt and find a
new defense. One of the things that has changed so dramatically,
uh in both college football and college basketball is this
transfer portal. I mean, now that you can get guys
the next year at least the first time they transfer.
After that they would have to sit out of here.
But the first time you transfer, you don't have to

(59:24):
sit out. And we saw the slash year Chip Kelly
bring in you know, Charbonnet obviously out of Michigan. I mean,
there's a lot of names that are moving around right now.
So does that dynamic favor the big schools? I mean
it's new summer already figuring this whole thing out. Others
are trying to catch up on how this whole transfer

(59:46):
portal works. But what the opportunities are there. I mean
a lot of people are talking about Spencer Rattler, who
obviously entered into the transfer portal. Uh. Some people think
he's gonna end up in Arizona, but others think, who knows,
he could end up it? You l A like another
former Oklahoma transfer by the name of Troy Aikman, one
from Oklahoma to u c l A. What do you
make of that? So I was against the transfer portal

(01:00:11):
in in open transfer, and I had my reasons for it.
It's kind of point us to go over that again
because it's and I accepted it's happening. Right in my
PAT twelve show, I talked, we talked about for three years, right,
I said, look, it's happening. I'll accept it. We'll talk
about it as it is. But the port wasn't supposed
to work the way it's it's working now, right, which
is bona fide starters leaving the schools go somewhere else.
That was never what it was supposed to be, right,

(01:00:32):
And so it has now become a NFL fregency without
really freatency. Right, there's no obviously not paying players, and
you can leave any time, which is different than signing
a contract with the NFL and with the team I
entertaining waiting your four years. So it changes everything because
you can build your team around recruiting, but then add
a couple of pieces, right, Tavian Thompson from you know

(01:00:55):
the the Utah running back right boom transfer just inshert Right,
it's running back. We obviously see what what what Lincoln
Riley did with Baker Mayfield and with Kyler Murray. Um,
you can have a good team in place and add
a couple of pele. You can't put your whole team
around them, but you can add in two or three
and poor guys. Now you're not gonna get many offensive
defensive alignment. If they're good, they're gonna stay where they're at.

(01:01:16):
But it's typically wide receivers, running backs, quarterbacks, defensive backs.
Those guys. There was a kid at a Tennessee a
high profile linebacker, went to Alabama played all season for them.
So um it uh, I'm it's not the way it
was intended. But I hope organ can take advantage of
organ tiped players transfer out. We're gonna continue to have
It's it's what it is now. So you can't be

(01:01:37):
surprised when people leave. Like you can't. You just can't
um and most coaches are like, all right, fine, leave,
well we'll get someone else, like whatever, And that's the
way you can build your team now, and it's this
is what college football is. This what people wanted and
now now we got it. Yeah, you know, I'm still
going over as we get ready for Bryce Young to
win the Heisman tonight. Just how this whole dynamic of

(01:01:57):
him going to USC because I'm hmer an interview my
TV station did with him in high school at modern day,
how excited he was to be a USC trojan. I
mean it was done. I mean he's going to USC.
It's been a lifelong dream. He wants to go there.
Mattliner obviously went to his high school on a Heisman trophy,
and then it was just a series of events like
s he had that five and seven season, Rumors are

(01:02:20):
out about Clay Helton, he might get fired, and then
all of a sudden, Keaton Slovas takes over for an
injured J. T. Daniels and he plays really well, and
all of a sudden You're like, wow, Slovas has got
a lot of years left. And then who could have
foreseen the Keaton Slovis would regress instead of get better,
and by that time it was over. Rice young A
d committed and it ended up at Alabama. But nowadays

(01:02:42):
this is the whole dynamic. I mean, if if these
five star recruits are not getting what they want immediately
from these universities, they're gone. And that's gonna make it
very tricky in terms of recruiting because you might think,
all right, we got all the pieces in play, but
if you don't satisfy all of them immediately, they're gone. Um. Yes,

(01:03:07):
and and and older coaches have said, you know, they
don't like uh this because they have to keep recruiting
their own players because normally, you know, on the past,
you just recruit your guy and that's it recruited. Now,
that's why I like like Dan Lanning being hired man
thirty five years old, Like he's gonna get this right,
he's gonna under I'm not saying Mario Chrystobal didn't. He
got it to um. But these these younger coaches understand

(01:03:28):
the game we're playing now. And I always change a
lot of this, right. You know, if you can get
an I L deals you know, the organ different than elsewhere,
then you might want to stay organ or transfer organ
and I always kind of changed. Change all of this. Okay, Uh,
so many good things here to talk about. This is
just crazy, but it is the changing landscape of college football.

(01:03:49):
All right. On the other start, we gotta get back
to some NFL news, a huge Sunday around the NFL,
A ton of games we want to get to. But
first let's find out what's trending right now. So irv
and there it is. That's an interesting higher and we'll
see if it works. Because one of the things that's
always discussed is how well do you know the coaches

(01:04:09):
in the region that you're going to, and certainly it's
all going to be based on the staff, is how
well he can relate to people out west. Yeah, he
is moving to a place that he has never been
anywhere near No, I can promise you that so different
atmosphere and Eugene like just like it is anywhere else
around the country. And the interesting also you're talking about

(01:04:29):
the transfer portal. Uh. One quarterback who's in the transfer portal.
That's UCF Dylan Gabriel at u c l A practice
today as they're preparing for the holiday boll Wow. Okay,
al right, well, how do you feel about being a
u c l A guy yourself about Chip Kelly. What
what does you say all they gonna do now is
deal runs to next season? Do they give him an extension?

(01:04:51):
What are they gonna do with him? I've said from
the beginning, you either fire you either hire a new
defensive coordinator, or you got higher a moving company. Okay, yeah,
because because he's Because as good as Chip Kelly's been,
it's not as bad as the defense has been the
last two seasons. And no wins this year against teams

(01:05:12):
of winning record, no teams the last two seasons. Two
wins against a winning record team in four years at
u c L A. The worst statistical coach in the
history of u c L. A. Wow, what do you
think of that? Jeff worst statistical coach in u c
l A history. Not great, But I mean I like Chips,
so I hope he does well. I mean you want

(01:05:32):
him to. The joke was that if he took the
Oregon job, Oregon, chip Kelly would be going to Eugene
and not the u c L A. Chip Okay, again,
I don't think it's the offense. It's it's the offense.
The offense statistically led to conference, but but it's just
he's got he's got adapt defensively, he's gott he's gotta
get rid of that. Say, they were completely exposed by

(01:05:52):
Fresno State, and it continue the rest of the year.
Uh well, we do have college football going on right now,
the Army Navy game, and it was the Navy midshipman
that made the move to take the lead first. The
goal probably to love a tide. Let's say see about
that tie quarterback follow ties form a tuxdown Navy mitt ship.
That's Pete Madhurst from the Navy Sports Network. They continue

(01:06:16):
to lead the Army fourteen to play in the third
quarter of that contest. Penn State has brought in Miami
head coach Manny Diaz as their new defensive coordinator. Of course,
we were just talking about the fact that Oregon has
a new head coach, as Dan Lanning will take over
the Ducks program, as reported by John Kenzano from The Oregonian,

(01:06:37):
saying the team has been informed, although I have not
seen an official announcement from the school, but of course
that will be coming later on the NBA hardwood in
the fourth quarter three thirty five to play Orlando with
the lead over the Clippers, the Magic being led by
Franz Wagner, who has twenty points and nineteen points coming

(01:06:59):
from terence loss. Five Magic players are in double figures
l A. Playing without Paul George in this contest, we'll
see if they can get back into it. Zion Williamson
dialing down his rehab as he continues to experience sore
nous in that surgically repaired right foot and imaging showing
that he is not healing like he had been before.

(01:07:20):
We'll see if he gets on the floor at all
this season. But right now we will definitely be going
back to Steve Hartman, Jeff Squartz, and a Fox Sports
out of all right, we'll thank you very much. Coming
up in the next hour, we're gonna check in with
our buddy Adam Kaplan, our Fox Sports Radio NFL insider. Well,
let's get into a little NFL football. Let's give the

(01:07:41):
college game just a little bit of arrest right now,
because we can just go on and on and on
and on about a lot of subsequies. I want to
get to some of these games. Week fourteen of the NFL.
By the way, this is the last bye week in
the NFL. Colts Dolphin's, Patriots and Eagles are off after this,
We're gonna have full schedule. The Red to the Way.
By the way, you know, as a former NFL player, Jeff,

(01:08:03):
you know you get into December, right, You've had training camp,
and then the season starts September, October, November, and then
it's like December is the finish line, and then if
you make the playoffs, you get into January. How about
the fact that the last two weekends of the NFL
regular season are January second and January ninth. I love

(01:08:25):
January ninth. Team. How about never It's just you know,
by by the end of the Super Bowl, like I'm
so exhausted, like, and then there's like USFL this year,
I'm like, I just can't take it. I just need
a little bit of a break. Us so much football.
Um yeah, I mean it's it's long this year, right,
the extra week and started a little later than usuals. Yeah,

(01:08:46):
I mean to give you some perspective. Super Bowl eleven,
John Madden's one Super Bowl win when the Raiders beat
the Vikings out of the Rose Bowl. That game was
played on January nine. Week eate team is January ninth,
So man, the calendar has definitely moved as far as
the NFL is concerned. Alright, some of the games in
Week four, team that I definitely want to talk about.

(01:09:08):
I want to talk about first about this NFC East
matchup between the Cowboys and the Washington football team. Washington.
You know, both of us thought before the season they
got a pretty good shot to win the NFC East.
They finished well last year. And we're talking about their defense,
which apparently didn't show up the first six weeks of
the season. We're like, what happened to that Washington defense? Well,

(01:09:28):
that defense is back, and Taylor Heineke has proven to
be more than an adequate quarterback in terms of getting
points that they need. And yet they're a whopping four
and a half point dog at home against the Cowboys team.
Certainly over the last month, Jeff, they've been on a
roller coaster ride. I mean, Cowboys have been sort of

(01:09:48):
all over the map. What what do you make of
this matchup here? Um, I Micha McCarthy guarantine A win
doesn't doesn't help the Cowboys this matchup. Um. You know,
Ron Rivera's teams man at Washington just keep getting better.
And they happened with Carolina in November December. It's really
impressive to see the way that he's kind of able
to figure things out as they get going. Yeah, and

(01:10:10):
the Cowboys, to me, they're they're very up and down,
and part of that might be they had some injuries.
They have guys back healthy. The defense is, you know,
it's kind of earlier the season, big turnover forcing defense.
They don't force as many turnovers. Are they gonna be
able to um, you know, to uh uh to to
do as much essentially right on on defense. And Dad

(01:10:34):
plays not as well outside nos Well on the road, um,
nos Well in the cold if you look at his
his splits. Um. So, I'm kind of curious how this
game goes on. Only Washington is great, but they're almost
have a you know that you've heard of the Ewing theory, right,
Bill Simmons Ewing theory where um team plays better once
the star goes out. Well, Chase Young has gone out,

(01:10:56):
and defensively Washing has got a lot better. Um so day,
and they switched offensively. Antonio Gibson carries the last three weeks,
he's starting to pick to pick up the running the
ball a little bit more now so to me, um,
feels like I would think Washington pus the points here
for gambling on this game. I think the tough game
for Dallas. I agree with you. Um, I don't know

(01:11:18):
what the weather is gonna be like their FedEx feel,
but they're saying forty seven degrees that it could be anything.
I mean, that's it could be a bad Yeah, it's yeah.
I think the Washington and again getting back to Ron Rivera,
I think you bring up a great point that they
seem to somehow progress over the course of the season,

(01:11:39):
get better, and you know, you lose your top defensive
player when they were giving up seemingly thirty points every week. Uh,
and now over the last five games, uh, they haven't
given up more. I think only once have they've given
up more than twenty points. So their defense has come around.
A couple other early games I want to get to
with you. Both divisional games rave ends at the Browns,

(01:12:01):
and you feel like this is a maker break for
Baker Mayfield. Now I heard Colin Coward, who's been very
publicly critical of Baker over the years, saying that the
Browns have already made up their mind. We're not gonna
give this guy the big money that franchise quarterbacks get.
But I keep getting back to this, before you made

(01:12:23):
Baker Mayfield the number one overall picking the draft at Oklahoma,
You're coming off back to back seasons in which he
had a combined record of one and thirty one. They
have been significantly better obviously with Baker Mayfield a quarterback.
This could be a key game. I mean, Cleveland's at home,
their slight favorite against a Ravens team that probably is

(01:12:43):
not as good as their record indicates. They've been struggling
at eight and four. But what do you think of
the future there and what Cleveland ultimately is going to
decide as far as Baker Mayfield is concerned, Well, there,
they can't pay forty million dollars a year's with it
like that. I don't know what they end up doing.
They probably just plays fifth year option out and then

(01:13:04):
franchise him or something, right like, you can't get him
a long term deal. But specifically to this game, um,
the Ravens have kind of gonne by and had a
little bit of breaks this year, right the seven yard
field goal by Justin Tucker, the the the Chiefs fumble
by Clyde Edwards. Hilaire Nicholas came about blocks of field goal.

(01:13:25):
They come all the way back against the Colts. They
kind of had a good run this year where they've
kind of gone things to break their way because they
are so beat up, Steve, They're so hurt. They're like
seven impact players on injured reserve, two running backs, left tackle,
right tackle, two cornerbacks. Like it's it's it's you can't

(01:13:45):
eventually the depth runs out. And we've seen Lamar Jackson
tried to do so much because he knows he's the
only hope they have to win because they're so beat up.
The Browns are off of by if they cannot win
this game at home. With how beat up the Ravens are,
they have a lot of problems like this is not
going to be good that Browns cannot win this game.

(01:14:06):
And for Baker Mayfield, right, um, it's um, you just can't.
Paying forty million dollars here, you can't. And I know
they have smart, ivly educated, smart cap guys, smart general manager,
they have to know this, but you are kind of stuck.
That's the best quarterback you've had in how long, well

(01:14:28):
since well since obviously they were brought back into the
league as an expansion team, you take the risk of like, well,
that's what I'm asking you. I mean, people, I mean,
if you're being would remember where they were one and
thirty one the two years before they brought in Baker Mayfield.

(01:14:48):
And he's had multiple head coaches, multiple offensive coordinators, personnel
in and out. Um, I don't know. I I'm not
saying that. I'm saying that. You know, he's some elite quarterback,
but we try to put that franchise label on quarterbacks.
Is he a guy that can keep you in contention?
And that's why I think this is such a critical game.

(01:15:11):
Like you said, Baltimore is beat up, the Ravens aren't
as good as their record says. They don't look like
an eight and four team right now, and the Browns
are home and their favorite. If they can't win this game,
if Mayfield does not play well in this game, then
maybe maybe that makes an excuse for them to turn
the other way. I think it would be a mistake.

(01:15:32):
I mean, what are you going to replace him with?
You can start all over again. It just doesn't make
any sense. And Stefanski last year was Coach of the Year,
So um, yeah, I would say that Baker. There has
not been a player I think this is lady On
Bell has cost himself so much money in one season, right,

(01:15:53):
remember said out that year with this Pittsburgh and didn't
make fifteen million dollars Bagas cost him have a lot
of money by his player this year, and maybe next
year is healthier and he plays better. But I'd be concerned.
He's like Jared Goff, right, he kind of that same well,
Jerry Goff, Jimmy Garoppolo. Um, it's just kind of like that,
just okay quarterback, what you can win a lot of
games with, but your goals to a super Bowl. And

(01:16:15):
the thing about it though, seeves if you decide this year,
you know what, we're gonna do what the Chiefs did.
We're gonna Jedison Alex Smith, and we're gonna draft so
and so there's no one to do that with. You know,
it's not that draft. It's not the draft. It is
not that draft. I mean, it doesn't mean that the
quarterbacks that come out of this draft, that someone emerges
maybe surprises people right place, right system and everything else

(01:16:35):
and becomes a success. But this is not going to
be a repeat of last year when we at quarterback, quarterback,
quarterback at the top. Nothing like that. On the other side,
speaking of quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes the Kansas City Chiefs to
tie defending a f C champions Have they reassumed the
mantle of favorite in the a f C? That might

(01:16:57):
be news to New England fans. We'll talk about their
man match up with the Raiders. Coming up next, Steve
Hartman and Jeff Schwartz. This it's Fox Football Saturday. See
already for the holidays, Jeff Schwartz, family already to I
mean Hanaka is past? What do you do now? I

(01:17:19):
mean he did your Honeka celebration. We live our lives.
I don't do you feel like you have extra time
to do things? Uh? Because Hanaka came very early this year.
It buries for year to year and um, so yeah,
you're gonna do a lot of extra special work. We
still still were still the Christmas tree up. Um I

(01:17:42):
got why don't get my way for Christmas? Gift? What
kids expecting to give from Santa? My son? Answer about yesterday? Um,
I think my son, my sons seven, I think he
I think he knows though he just pretends to not know. Um,
but yeah, it's Uh, yeah, I was working on Christmas.
I'll find some work on Christmas. You know, the Jews

(01:18:03):
always free in Christmas, so I'm sure to find some
work to do, and we'll watch some sports. There is
like a really bad bowl game on Christmas. To Chinese
food on Christmas, yes, of course. Of course. Movie. I
don't know if we really go to I want to
go to movies much anymore. I remember one year, one year,
we have a show on Christmas Day? Do we not?

(01:18:23):
As Christmas Saturday? Yeah, yeah, we're gonna be here. Well
then we're working Saturday. Um yeah, we're gonna be doing
our show. By the way, Ralph wants to jump in quickly, yes, yes, No,
I just want to say that we're merely a couple
of weeks away from exactly this time. Jeff's Christmas tree
will already be in the street. Yes, my wife will
dry Christmas tree out. She's already eyeing it. It's already
being eyed clearing the past. I've heard about this, Danny,

(01:18:47):
You've been on the show. I've done the show with
you on Monday mornings. When my wife is taking the
tree out. What a freak she is. She is quite special.
Um so I was on I was on my other
my path told show, and my host was like, you know,
you're really I'm even killa right never never up and
down with my sports teams. And he's like, the more
you get to know your wife, the more I realized

(01:19:07):
you have to be that way, because if you didn't,
your your family situation with driving you crazy, like like
like she'll just grab the tree down by herself. I
just drag it out by yourself. This is Denise, my ex.
The second it's over, it's over. I mean, like everything
out that day gets put back in the attict. By

(01:19:30):
the way, We're brought to you by one of our
favorite cities, Las Vegas, the greatest men on earth. Every game, match, racing, competition,
it is always on whoever you for whatever sports you'll
love to watch, the biggest games are even bigger in Vegas.
So make sure to play your tip today. I visit
Las Vegas dot com. Chiefs hosting the Raiders. Are you
all in? Because I mean I'm talking New England like crazy,

(01:19:52):
and you dismissed that. I mean you just said Kansas City,
it's over there. They're gonna be back in the super Bowl.
Are you really convinced that Chiefs are all the way back.
I'm not sure. Um, well, it's more of like a
I'm not quite sure. Mac Jones is a rookie Wednesday
FC Conference more than the Chiefs are back, and offensively,
Tom Brady was essentially a rookie quarterback. You keep saying that,

(01:20:15):
but he's in the second year that that doesn't matter.
One game the year before. Okay, well Pat Mahomes played
one game his rookie season and then the next year
was much better. Say, mac Jones has started more games
this year. He hasn't lost a road game, by the way,
he's six and oh uh, then Tom Brady did that year,
So maybe they make it. I don't know. But the
Chiefs defensively thirty pay last five games, they played a

(01:20:36):
lot better. Obviously they're playing a writer's team that just
can't score. I mean, you scored on the Raiders scored
on Thanksgiving while the Blue but otherwise since Rugs out
the lineup, there's been no downfield threat. I mean the
Thanksgiving thing was just hold on a second. Danny g
step in here, Mr Raider. He has dismissing the Raiders
as a team that has no offense. Um here, here's

(01:20:57):
that stat, right, Derek Carr every game that he has
thrown for over three hundred yards, they won every one
of those games that I'm not mistaken. Is that correct? Yeah?
It's weird about t Shaan Jackson though, because, like Jeff
was saying on Thanksgiving, he and other wide receivers were
getting passes down the field, but then last week that
dried up into Shawn Jackson didn't even seem to be

(01:21:18):
in the mix. How about this stat? So in games
in which Derek carrs sung for three hundred yards or
six and oh under three yards oh and six, I
would say that's a trend. Would you say, can you
throw for three hundred yards against Kansas if he doesn't
win the game? Probably, I just gave you the stat.
But I don't think they win the game. So he's

(01:21:38):
not gonna go for their yards then, so do you
think they're gonna win? Look? I I thought that Denver
was gonna keep that game much closer at Casey. I
think they were about a ten point dog, and I
thought division game too much. Proved that wasn't too much.
I think the Raiders keep this game close. Uh. Danny
and I were talking about this. It's the kind of

(01:21:59):
game where certainly are expecting that the Raiders are pretty
much done and all of a sudden they show up
for a game. And to me, this game has that feel.
It's a rivalry game. It's a big time rivalry game.
And I'm just not when you look at Patrick mahomes
numbers this year, and I know it's not all Mahomes,
but he's become pedestrian, certainly by his standards. When you

(01:22:22):
look at the numbers he's put up this year. All Right,
We're gonna have much more NFL talk plus all the
latest in college football coming up next. It's been quite
a Saturday around the sports where we got all kinds
of breaking stories, a lot of coaching news around the
college football scene. Who knows it won't be long for

(01:22:43):
the NFL scene to have some coaching carousel as well. Uh.
The Heightsman Trophy winner will be announced in about three hours.
Likely it will be Bryce Young, the Alabama quarterback walking
away with the heavy hardware. Keeping our eye on Army
and Navy. We're gonna be joined coming up shortly. Adam

(01:23:06):
Kaplan will join us Fox Sports Radio NFL insider. I
want to ask about a couple of offensive coordinators that
were fired in the NFL this year. One of them
was Jason Garrett by the Giants and the other was
Joe Brady by Carolina. And now there were rumors that
Jason Garrett might be in line for the Duke job,
but they ended up going with Mike Elco, the defensive

(01:23:28):
coordinator of Texas, and m uh, there's a lot more
meat on the bone when it comes to Brady. But
let me let me ask about Jason Garrett. Um. He
seemed like an odd hire from day one in my
opinion for the Giants, and they certainly didn't see any
progress with Daniel Jones as a quarterback under the tutelage
of Jason Garrett. Um, does he have any value at

(01:23:51):
the NFL level? I mean, what do you see going
on with Jason Garrett in the future. And have you
ever been really a Jason Garrett fan? Thought he did
better at Dallas and people give him credit for but
he also was kind of just like a yes man, right,
So he was a guy that felt like kind of
just did whatever Jerry Jones wanted. Um, But you know,
he and I think you know obviously with with Romo there,

(01:24:12):
they never maximized I think how good Romo was, and
obviously with Dac and that rookie season, they were able
to make the playoffs. I believe they wanted They beat
the Lions in that playoff game, right, so they want
a playoff game, you know that. I mean, yeah, it
should have been a Yeah. The passenger was Badan Sue,
so again not not the point, but he's okay coach. Now.

(01:24:35):
The Giants thing was, was it just they're so conservative offense?
But I think this is what they Jason Garrett wasn't
getting the most at Daniel Jones. You know, Dani Jones
was playing the best probably had in his career. There
weren't scoring enough points. I get all that, but this
is I think what Joe Judge wanted from an offense.
Though he doesn't want innovative, high powered looking offense, right,

(01:25:00):
so I don't know that. Joe Judge, you want to
keep his job. I mean, look at I mean this,
I mean it doesn't even survive this year. Joe Judge,
I think he does. I think they're gonna get rid
of Ghet'm gonna keep Judge, is my guests. Um, So
Joe Brady was fired Um. And obviously he was at

(01:25:20):
LSU in twenty nine. All right, what's the story? You're there?
You're there? I mean, are you kidding me? This guy
was the hottest name coming out of the l s
U s undefeated season. He was getting all the credit
for the emergence of Joe Burrow. He goes to Matt
Rule to Carolina. You're there in Carolina, young coach on

(01:25:42):
the rise, gone in his second season, mid season No
less something something doesn't smell right to me. Um. I
think that the issues with Brady were he never really
made adjustments. That the Panthers were pulp stating. Now I
had it, I had it saved from earlier this week. Um,

(01:26:04):
the Panthers were thirty and third quarter points per drive. Um,
and you know he wasn't. This is kind of his
first couple of times. You'll be a full time play caller. Uh.
The Panthers have to scored a league worst eighteen offensive
points the third quarter yet like this, so that the
adjustments and second half weren't great, which seems to be
in an issue obviously if you can't adjust, because defense
will figure out what you're doing. Obviously. See, I'm donald

(01:26:26):
didn't have a great season. Now, last year the offense
was much better with Teddy Bridgewater. But Donald just and
Donald might not be any good. Everyone like that's part
of this too, right, Maybe maybe because when he led
the nation in turnovers his second season as USC starting quarterback,
that should have been a warning sign. Yeah, I'm with you.
I'm with you, buddy, and he'll go back to college.

(01:26:47):
There's rumors will go and be um mammar crystal balls.
Oh see in Miami, he's from that area. Uh. He
ran a very unique system at uh An l s U,
a lot of empty protection and obviously you know when
you have Joe Burrow every wide receiver and every offen
time we get drafted, it's gonna make you look good.
And so, um, you know you will see what he
does in Miami if he goes there somewhere else. It

(01:27:08):
does feel like Matt Rule Wanta. It doesn'tel like Matt
Rule is very happy here. And I think he kind
of want to escapegoat as well for the offense. And
that that being Joe Brady, I was surprised, well see
that happened at this point in the year. But um,
you know that that let me go back, I mean
your guy, Cristal Ball. They're taking the Miami job, and
you're right. I mean it seems like Brady. Uh is
that a good marriage Brady and Crystal Ball? Is that

(01:27:29):
is that gonna work? H I mean, where do you
go with this University of Miami program? I know they
were I saw an interview the other day. When when
you think about Miami, when you think back in the eighties,
nineties into the early two thousand's the dominant Miami program.
It's about swag Man. I mean, that's that's the you.
The you has always been about that, and then the

(01:27:51):
university people sort of said we need to get away
from that and everything else, and they just they've never
been the same. I mean, it seems right for the
take in another flip on the coach at Florida. Florida
State is still floundering around. There. Just seems to be
a you know a lot of things going on in
the state of Florida with you know, Central Florida and
South Florida and Florida International. There's a lot of football

(01:28:12):
programs down there. Uh, Is Kristo Ball gonna be in
the right place at the right time to suddenly re
emerge as a force in the state of Florida. Can
he do that? And would Joe Brady be the right guy? Well, look,
Mario is gonna get the players come to Miami. He
got him to come to Oregon for for Haaving's sake,
He'll get him to come to Miami. Um, the question

(01:28:34):
is is just for me, is I've been washing in
the last four years? Is there's some in game management
sometimes And I don't think that's actually I think it's
less questionable than people normally say. But he's got to
be able to fix that a little bit. Um and
the penalties were kind of rough this season, and offensively

(01:28:56):
just gotta be a little more opened up. I know
he's from the football I I love his office alignment. Again,
they were fun to watch to grind it on people,
But he never really developed his own quarterback. He got
Herbert when he was there, Tyler Schuck ended up transferring out,
and Anthony Brown this year, who I should never have
played quarterback for organ this season. So he's got develop
a quarterback. It just kind of figure out some game

(01:29:17):
management issues. Other than that, he's gonna recruit great, It's
gonna be tough, physical, All those things are gonna be true.
It's just a matter now of of obviously, um getting
the right coaches. Especially Corne has come with him and
maybe Joe Brady's that guy, but Joe Brady again wide
open off into l s U. I'm much of that
message with with Lamark Christabad once all this movement of

(01:29:38):
these coaches and we started this out top Megan about
obviously Brian Kelly leaving Notre Dame for l s U.
H Lincoln Riley leaving Oklahomba for USC. I mean, these
are big time programs. I mean, how much stock are
you putting in these coaches? I mean seriously, I mean,
did you see like melt Tucker's extension of Michigan State.
You can see really so Michigan State kind of ruined

(01:30:01):
everyone else, right, I mean, what's the kind of deal
is that? You know? I think I think Oregon did
offer Mark crystal Ball eight million, but I think they
just they didn't. They would rather have not paid that
much for coaching. Maybe that's why they hired Dan Lanning
because they're not going to pay him seven million dollars
a year and they can spend money on him and
then hire great assistance and great coaches. Um so I

(01:30:25):
am yeah, I I uh, it's it's not our money. Steve,
like I understand something that doesn't bother me. But I
mean if you're investing money, I mean, you know, and
no knock on Millid his dues in the NFL and
college he had one year at Colorado had a losing record.
It's it's obscene to paying that much money for not
having won anything. I mean Nick Saban's worth what thirty

(01:30:46):
million dollars? That million, But but what it does those
that really screws obviously, um, it screws everyone else who's
trying to pay coaches because now they're say, hey, I
want that money, right and you're like, well, we're like
giveing that you go. Mal Tucker hasn't won his division yet.
And by the way, that is a state school. Where's

(01:31:07):
all this money coming from? For Miami? Supposed it was
coming from the health the health up hospital. I mean,
look Oregon, the money comes from donors. I mean we
know who they are. So there's someone missions that I
believe it is a billionaire. Who's the big donor? They
have a a billionaire. It's you know, a rounding error.
Throw Mel Tucker his salary. Right, Um, so they these

(01:31:30):
But here's the thing though, is again it's an arms race, right,
It's it's who can recruit the best, get the best infrastructure.
And because the playoffs are hard to win and hard
to get in, you have to invest all this money. Now,
maybe again the twelve team playoff, you end up not
having to do that, right, You end up just because
you don't you know, you make it every year. If
you make the playoff every year, you never won a championship.
I think a lot of schools will be happy with that.

(01:31:51):
Just making every the top four or five would not
be But maybe you know, people will not feel the
need to spend all that money if they make the
playoff five times in eight seasons. Man, I'm telling you,
just crazy, just unbelievable, the amount of money, and again
all this noise about, you know, the aftermath of and

(01:32:14):
empty stadiums and all this dead and everything. Forget it.
Just like baseball. You know, they're they're going into a
lockout of baseball, right based on what we we We
lost all this money and then almost a billion dollars
of contracts are handed out in a forty eight hour period.
He can't scream poverty, and and the money is just

(01:32:35):
all over the place. It just goes to show where
we are in the world of sports. Right on the
other start, when we get a little extra time, we're
gonna break down Week fourteen of the NFL Adam Kaplan
our Fox Sports Radio NFL Insider will join us. Coming
up next, Steve Hartman and Jeff Schwartz. By the way,

(01:32:56):
still an under and this Army Navy game, Army has
got the all down seventeen thirteen. Uh. If they don't
score touchdown or now, it'll be under for the sixteen
straight here. That's a pretty good run, isn't it for
under sixteen straight years? Possibly that would be a trend.
I would say I think so too. But if if

(01:33:18):
Army scores here to to win the game, it goes over,
it goes over. So that's where we're at right now.
Two minutes to go in that game, maybe leading Army
by a score of seventeen, Armies running a two minute
drill in a seven minute offense, which is gonna be
a challenge for them. All right, let's talk some NFL
football right now, joining us our Fox Sports Radio NFL Insider,

(01:33:39):
Serious x M NFL Adam Kaplan and Adam I'm gonna
start with a team that is nowhere near the playoffs,
nor will they be in the foreseeable future. Of talking
about the Jacksonville Jaguars, Apparently ownership has said we're gonna
stay the course with Urban Meyer. We got new reports
of all kinds of you know, yelling at his assistant coaches.

(01:34:02):
What have you guys? Ever won your a bunch of losers?
The Marvin Jones story where he got so angry at
Meyer he left had to be convinced to come back.
Where are we going with this right now? Will Urban
Meyer be back as the Jacksonville Jaguars coach in two Yeah,
I'm just I'm just gonna fast forward my my notes
to you guys that I gave you the last time

(01:34:22):
we had an incident with Urban Meyer, which happened with
the video that came out, And what I said was,
he'll finish the season out and then he'll get the
off season. We'll see if he's a head coach, he
will never finish his contract out. That will never happen. Um,
he's got he's got significant issues and how he deals
with people. I could add to the reporter from NFL Network. Um,
there's a disconnect between I would say Eban Meyer and

(01:34:44):
the personnel staff. There's just this guy is a college
head coach and one of the best in the history
of that business. This guy's not an NFL head coach.
He doesn't how to handle People's not a tree people.
And the biggest mistake that shot Kan did is giving
him personnel control. That that was a mistake. Um. He
I just I don't think he's ever gonna work. I

(01:35:06):
don't think it can work based only handles himself. Um.
And and let me talk you about Marvin Jones. Marmin
Jones is probably one of the highest class players in
the league. He's super high character, great with charity, great guy.
When a guy like that has got a problem with
Herba Myron, I'm sure the NFL network reporting is correct,
there's gonna be a problem. And the way he's handled
James Robinson when the way he's handled his coach is

(01:35:27):
privately and publicly, it's not just the what's in that
NFL network article. Um, he's made some mistakes on on
not taking responsibility for some of the things that happened
have happened with rotations at running back. He said, it's
all Bernie Parmley's issue, not his. He hands it off
to him. Uh, and then he he contradicted some statements
about some of the rotations. It's it's been an absolute nightmare.

(01:35:49):
And and I'm not even bringing up the Chris Doyle situation,
which was his first issue that he had right after
he took the job, the former IOWA throughout the condition
coach who was uh dismissed there he left and then
um because if issues players had with him, or Meyer
hires him, thinks it's gonna be fine, swept under the rug.
He's gone after twenty four hours. So it tells you

(01:36:11):
wherever Meyer's with his his entitlement and is also his
lack of responsibility and awareness is what a Jaguar source
told me. He's got a major lack of awareness of
what's going on in the real world with the NFL,
but nothing else. Everyone who called this, do we get
like a prize? You knowef well, do like, hey, guys,
we told you this wasn't gonna work. Prize. Is there something? Well,

(01:36:32):
you know, I'll say this much. I went in thinking,
you know, I did enough homework on him that the
guy is just a pure football coach at the college levels, elite, Okay,
the way that he motivated Yeah, but but look, you
have the scandals at Ohio State, which were real. Uh
you just you you wondered because you get you know,
he'd obviously knows that because he coach in Gainesville, he

(01:36:54):
knows that that market. When I get Shot, Coom was
big game hunting. He was going to bring in a
high profile coach. We thought it could get the thing
turned around, and obviously it's not. It hasn't worked, then
it's not gonna work. Right when I right when the
Chris Doyle situation went down, I'm like, Okay, this is
a guy clar he doesn't get it. This could be
really not good. And then the video clinching for me,
I just I cannot believe Shot Khan did not fire

(01:37:15):
him for cause, because there's a Mars clause in every contract.
I'm shocked that he did not fire him. That was
a mistake. And now you have this stuff that came out. Obviously,
the only question that remains is does he make it.
We're gonna make it the rest of the season, but
does he make it to March and April and for
the draft. I can't see how but right now he
is and that's where the team is at. But again,

(01:37:36):
it's easy to say or put a statement, Hey he's
our coach for now. It's different when the season's over all. Right,
let's let's get two teams that are actually in contention
this year and like Jacksonville right now, and I'm giving
your one two three power rankings in the a f
C right now, you give me your one two three
power rankings in the a f C. Well, I have it.

(01:37:59):
New England is the clear one, just based on the
way they're playing. Now. I know there are a lot
of people upset at Bill Belichick. I I was not surprised.
I I thought they'd run the hell out of it
because that Mac Jones can't throw the ball very far
in the wind. That's not a secret, and figur would
just be three times they'd pass it. But nevertheless, that's
what happened. I would put New England won Kansas City
at two. I know they're the four Sea, but I've

(01:38:20):
i got can't see it too, and I've got grudgingly
Tennessee at three. I'm worried about them with their issues
on offense, check late skill positions. But you know they're
coming off of BI hopefully they'll be better. But Kansas
City is rolling right now. For all the naysayers. And
Steve Bugnolo, defensive coordinator, who's who does this every year,
he turns it around. When you think that they can't, um,

(01:38:40):
he turns it around. And then you know, Buffalo Man
that that loss. I don't say things are unraveling there.
They're not. I mean, they're still a good football team,
but um, I know that they're pretty upset with that loss.
And Sean McDermott, the head coach, did not hide his
dissatisfaction where some of the things that happened in that game.
Now they go to Tampa must they was a game
there seven and seven. They're at the seventh seat or

(01:39:02):
something that seven six. Yeah, yeah, there'll be seven and
six and quite frankly, yeah, Indie. Indie has got a
better schedule if you ask me, if you compare schedules,
and he could take that spot. And remember there were
one in four and Frank Reichs did this in his
first year. They had a pretty significant losing record and
they went up making the playoffs. So yeah, I'm I'm
shocked by this. I'll admit it. I picked Buffalo and

(01:39:24):
Tampa getting the Super Bowl. Uh, And here we are.
The Buffalo has got they got issues, folks. They lost
their best corner for the season, uh and Tredavious White
and they they've got to start rebounding. And as you said, Jeff,
they play at Tampa that tomorrow. Tampa is great at home,
they're not good on the road. It's gonna be extremely difficult.
But I want to see Buffalo fired up here. I

(01:39:45):
want to see if they could rebound and show that
they're legit. Well. I want to stay with with Tampa
very quickly because I just can't put my finger on it. All.
These are twenty years now, and every time, every time
we were around in December, Tom Brady's team just playing
a different type of football than in September. I don't
know what it is, but I mean, who's beating them
in the NFC? The Canackers are due to Cardinals. Who's

(01:40:08):
gonna beat them if they're Cardinals? I don't trust. Kingsbury
has got to show me he can finish strong in
a season before I believe it can happen. On the
first time in his career that he would have done
that well, this is right, and this is the first
time he's been put into a prime position, right, Yeah,
And I don't believe in Green Bay's defense. I know
that they're gonna get JayR Alexander back very soon. Uh

(01:40:31):
he's starting to you know, he's starting to work from
the shoulder injury. They've Green Bay has been better than
I thought. I'll admit I didn't think they'd be as
good as they were, but I'm still I still have
questions on their defense. They've very talented, but if not
lived up to their talent. Every time I think Arizona
can't win a game, they want up beating a team
like ours, the Rams in l A. They destroyed them.
They're they've answered the bell every time. In the Green

(01:40:52):
Bay game, I mean they were with they complete a
pass away from winning, and plus remember Jandrey Hopkins got
hurt in that game. Uh there, Arizona, I've got a
lot of faith in them. I'm a little bit more
and probably most people nationally. But yeah, you're right with Tampa.
The only thing that Tampa's got now, they've got issues
at safety. They're two they're down twitter of top three.
Safety has got the Antonio Brown situation is interesting. As

(01:41:13):
great as he was when he was playing. They really
haven't missed a beat. That's the thing. Their offense has
been unstoppable. But Jeff, you're right there there. Brady's still
on fire. All right. Can the Washington football team beat
the Cowboys twice in the next three weeks to take
control of the NFC East. I'm a little bit surprised
at watching when they were two and six. They looked
like I thought they would look from an offensive stand like. Defensively,

(01:41:35):
they were embarrassing in fact that one team telling me
based on their coaching tape that they're sometimes they looked
like they weren't competitive, that they were mentally out of it,
they were undisciplined. And then I gotta give Jack the
real credit their defense cording. He's turned things around here.
They and Taylor Heineke, he's hanging in there. Um, they've
got injuries on offense, they're they're they're they're doing a
good job. No, they're not gonna They're not gonna take
both now and they could win tomorrow. Dallas has got

(01:41:58):
issues on offense in terms of running the full ball.
They're struggling there, and Tony Poll has got a bad foot,
might be the best backup running back in the National
Football League, but now they're one up. Splaying Dallas will
win that division. But what's more impressive is the fact
that Wahchinson's hanging in there. And I'll I'll admit I
did not see them getting a wild card spot right now.
If you stay better defensively without Chase Young and and

(01:42:20):
their other defensive end, yeah, no doubt, montest wet what happens.
Their d tackles are dominating Jonathan All. It's been unbelievable.
They're way more disciplined on the back end. If you remember,
they were giving up big play after big play and
they're just playing with more discipline. And this is one
thing I've learned about this business the twenty one years.
The better defensive coaches. Del Rio was a good defensive coach,
Guys like Steve spagnolo I mentioned the Chiefs. They're gonna

(01:42:43):
go through their laws. The people want to get after them,
people wanted them fired, and the good coaches turning around
and these guys always seem to do it one way
or the other. I'm going there. It's just found so
funny to me. Just is and that people just thought
like the Chiefs forgotten how to coach three. You were
saying that a couple weeks go. I oh, they they
had to get out of here. Guys. Um, the Browns

(01:43:05):
are hosting the Ravens. The Ravens could use the three
of us to play defense for them this weekend. Like
that's how they are. The Browns have to win this game, right,
I mean like they're they're they're off Buy. There is
no excuse for them to lose this weekend. I'm I'm
picking the Browns. I know my friend Scott for Elephints
up crazy, but I'm picking the Browns. I just think
that coming off to Buy, they're healthier now. Baker Mayfield's

(01:43:27):
the first time in five weeks he's taking every snap
at practice. I think that's important. They're gonna have enough offense.
We know how well they run the football Baltimore. Look,
I know that Browns are gonna throw the ball around
the field. That's not what they do. But when they throw,
they should be way more successful. Watch out for my
my man Don when people's Jones who I know talking
to the Browns they love who now starting for Odell
Beckham Jr. It was the second year receiver out of Michigan. Yeah,

(01:43:48):
I I would agree. I mean, could they lose sure,
uh if if the Ravens, who have a good run
defense stop them. But you know the Ravens, by the way,
the Mark Jackson is not playing a particularly high level.
He's been struggling, like I think. I think he's in
the Mahomes early season kind of where he's just trying
to do too much because they don't have any other options,
Like he's got running backs, wide receivers, offensive line, like

(01:44:09):
he's the only chance they have to win. I feel
like he's playing like he knows that he's the only
opportunity for them to win the game. And I feel
bad for him because, um, I think he's much better
than this, but he's kind of put in this spot
of injuries. And also Jeff he did miss he's he's
had two different pots with an Illinois non COVID last
year at COVID. He uh, he's missed practiced time. I

(01:44:29):
just don't think he's really sharp. And it's it's really
changed since that Miami game where they blitz forty of
the dropbacks for Lamar Jackson. If you see that the blueprint,
if there is anything against him is get after him,
and teams are gonna blitz now Cleveland. They they forced
a lot of turnovers. They're big with interceptions that were
last year and this year. I'm fascinated to see what
they do here in Joe Woods a defenseive coordinate, what

(01:44:51):
what they do to combat uh Lamar when he drops back.
I do know. I can't believe. You know, we have
regular season football all the way through January nine, so
we got a long way to go. Last week at
the Buys and then we got four full weeks with
full schedules coming up. Jeff is always man. Excuse me.
Adam is always great stuff talking about everything NFL. We'll

(01:45:13):
talk to you next week. Appreciate Adam Caplan Jonius their
Fox Sports Radio NFL Insider. By the way, Army has
lost to Navy and it went under again. That's seventeen
first quarter points and went under sixteen straight years. The
under is a winner. That's a trend. That's a trend.

(01:45:35):
I think that that's what they call it. Trend. Yes, yeah,
And they even set the bar as low as they
could possibly set it lowest over under on any FBS
game all season. On thirty four, and a half and
they still went under. So they go song. By the way, yes,

(01:45:57):
that is the best fight song ever. Indeed, by the way,
that was a three and eight Navy team that won today,
big upset over Army. All right, let's find out what's
trending right now, and we've started spoiled it for this guy,
Ralph Irvin. That wow under again, unbelievable under a game.
And understand that Army's possessions in the second half were

(01:46:18):
three plays, five plays, five plays, seven plays. Not good
when your whole game plan is built on about three
thousand yards or three thousand play drives, you know where
you're just racking up plays, running, running, running, running, And
as such, Navy does get the sin over Army. Four

(01:46:43):
and eight Navy eating for Army. There you go. That's
rivalries in action. One NBA or actually another college football note.
Oregon is going to bring in Georgia defensive coordinator Dan
Landing is their new head coach. Uh Kirby Smart says
that Landing will be coaching in the College Football Playoff
for the Bulldogs, So whether or not he'll be out

(01:47:05):
of the recruiting trail, whether or not he will be
practicing or leading the defense. That will be so to
be seen how that affects Georgia going forward in the CFP,
but he will be going to Eugene UH this season.
The Clippers one oh six, one or four winners over Orlando.
Reggie Jackson game winning jumper with two point two seconds
left led l A to their third straight win. Zion

(01:47:28):
Williamson not working out as much now as he was.
The rehab slowing down because he continues to experience sore
nous in his surgically repaired right foot. An imaging shows
that his bone fifth metatarsal is not healing as well
as it had been, so they're going to take it
easy on him. UH. College basketball games in action right now,

(01:47:51):
Number eleven Arizona trailing at Illinois the Aline I with
a fifty fifty minutes to play in the second half,
twelve O three to play in the second off number nineteen,
making number ten Kentucky lead over Notre Dame nine to
play in the first half, and Georgia Tech off seven
lead over number twenty five l s U and at

(01:48:13):
MLS Cup n Y CFC gave up a goal literally
seconds before the whistle was gonna be blown at the
end of regulation, so it was tied at one. We
had free soccer in MLS Cup went to penalty kicks,
but n y c f C held on four two
in penalty kicks and they take home the trophy as
we sent it back to our award winners. It is

(01:48:34):
Steve Harman, Jeff Schwartz here on Fox Sports Radio. I'm
looking for that award. Where is that award? Actually, Jeff
and I share we share an honor. We're both in
the Hall of Fame. Yeah, the Southern California Juice Sports
Hall of Fame. We're both in honor. Yeah. It's a
nice trophy. It's a beautiful trophy. Um beautiful. I'm sure

(01:48:55):
you have it on full display as I do, right,
I certainly do, absolutely very some office somewhere. You know.
I'm not a memorabilia guy. Like the only reason I
have stuff on my wall is my wife put it
on there. So when I do, like TV shots, it
looks like I played football. Otherwise, like, I don't keep
jerseys up. I have zero jersey of myself hanging in

(01:49:15):
the house. I don't like. I'm not like, I just
I don't like, you know, the way it works in
these deals. It's either all or nothing. I either you're
on the full display of everything ever right, or you
don't put anything out there. And I've heard, you know,
legendary sports figures. Um, I think I saw something on
Roger's staback. I mean there's there's nothing like you go

(01:49:37):
into his house and did he play football? You would
not downstairs, you would not know I played football. If
you went into my d you're only downstairs. Upstairs in
the TV room, you would know a little bit. In
my office only because the background like once the back
like would you like step like the rest of my office.
There's nothing, just just literally the background for when I
do like TV hits and stuff. Yeah, I you know,

(01:50:00):
I I I started like, uh seeing some of the
stuff out there. Um, quick stories. So I mentioned early
in the show that I was in Vegas for this
National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame dinner on Tuesday,
and I was there as a guest of Eric Dickerson.
Eric and I've known each other for many years. We
used to do TV work together and he's just a

(01:50:20):
super guy and always enjoys company. Um. But anyway, it
was about I guess about twelve years ago, maybe thirteen
years ago. I was over at Eric's house and he
has one of those nice studies, and obviously he's in
the Pro Football Hall of Fame at all. You know,
a few of his trophies out there. And I said,
you know, you're gonna have to make rooms someday for
you know, college football hall of Fame. And he goes, no,

(01:50:40):
I'm in the Hall of Fame. I said, no, no, no,
college football Hall of Fame. He goes, there's a college
football Hall of Fame and I said, yes, it's separate.
There's a Pro Football Hall of Fame, college football Hall
of Fame. He was nominated. He was on the ballot
seventeen times before he got in. How do he earlier?

(01:51:01):
I mean, the all time leading rusher and Southwest Conference, sister,
I guarantee you know it's going to break that record,
because well there is no Southwest Conference. Um. You know,
I had a chance to talk to It was Craig James,
the Pony Express and SMU and they were partners and
Craig's a super guy. We had a long talk. Um,
you know, Craig left television. People forget this. Before there

(01:51:23):
was Kirk herb Street at ESPN, it was Craig James,
and he did it for a long time, and then
he decided to run for the Senate in the state
of Texas. He actually ran against Ted cruz Um and
then he's moved on and and done a lot of
different things in Life's good for Craig James, absolutely, But
we were just talking about his era because when he

(01:51:43):
was at SMU and then he played for the Patriots
at the same time that I was working for the Raiders.
In fact, they upset us in a playoff game in
and I was curious of guys of that era. You know,
they were making okay money, but certainly nothing near they
are now. And I always hear the same thing. I'm

(01:52:03):
happy I played one I did, most guys did, and
part of it was the camaraderie. You know, there wasn't
social media anything else, you know, there seemed to be
a bond of teammates. And I was reminded again of this, uh,
when I saw Eric there with a lot of his
old SMU teammates, a lot of gray haired guys, you know,
hanging out with Eric and celebrating his induction because you know,

(01:52:27):
he feels genuinely that his induction sort of you know,
solidifies that team. They had great teams that estimate at
that time their status out there. But you know, Jeff,
when we talk about that element of the game, and
I was eye witnessed to it working for the Raiders
in the eighties, of the closeness the unity of the team.

(01:52:48):
Are those days gone? I mean, is that every man
for himself right now? And from a coaching standpoint, how
do you sort of, you know, bring it all together
again when there's so many different things tugging at you,
so show media and everything else, uh in the game
today and so much money. It certainly is different just
because of of the access to your phone, right, I mean,
you're on your phone all day. We just didn't have

(01:53:10):
phones when you know, when I back in my day
we have cell phones quite to thistent we have them now.
We had cell phones obviously, but your day wasn't all
that far. There's a couple of differences though that that
I feel that that I don't like about where we
are now. So when I was a young player, you
had to watch film together as a group because there

(01:53:32):
was no taking film home like we we got DVDs.
But no one wants to watch it as a DVD s,
He would you just stayed you got earlier, stayed a
few minutes later and watched the film together and had
a camaraderie and made friends and like I got to
know each other. And that is that's gone now because
guys just watched film with their iPads. I wish there
was more of that. And also to um because I

(01:53:52):
I just think that you know, with with COVID, obviously
there's just like less eating together and socializing together than
there has been pretty these years. But I think it's
more about the kind of just the access to your
phone and watching film like mobile and away from the facility.
I really think it makes offensive lines worse because we
used to have to sit there and talk through stuff
together in the room and more film together and just

(01:54:15):
kind of become friends just out of you just have
to because you you spend every time together. Now you
just don't get to do that. But I wouldn't mind
playing this era now, less practice, less pads, more money,
sign me up, Like like what do you mean? Like, yeah,
I understand that, but I mean because you harp as
a former offensive lineman about subpar offensive line play, and

(01:54:40):
maybe a lot of it has to do with the
fact that you know, you're so dependent on that guy
next to you to make this entire thing work. There's
so many moving pieces in football. That's why it is
really to me the consummate sport, you know, team sport,
because all the pieces have to move, whether it's offense, defense,
special teams, everything has to be moving in the right

(01:55:00):
direction for anything to work. All Right, We're gonna break
a little early because I know we've got to get
to this. You know, on the other side, you know
what's gonna happen. Jeff's gonna give us. He's gonna he's
gonna break it down. Now admittedly hasn't been. It's been
a roller coaster ride in the NFL for him this year.
College football is pretty good for you, except when you're
talking about Oregon. I was twelve the pactwel this year.

(01:55:22):
That is an amazing record. That's like the spread no less,
and that's two includes two organ loss. Yes, you if
if I had said before that Pact twelve championship game
that that game was going to be a repeat of
what happened in Utah, and what would you have said
to me, Like, no way, no chance, no chance. When

(01:55:44):
people said well, Organ played poorly because they were worried
about their coach leaving. It was the same as that
team two weeks ago. What are you talking about? Yeah,
it's got a butt swooped something. Sometimes teams have got
another team's number. All right, we're gonna get Jeff's NFL
picks coming up next that. I love this song. I

(01:56:04):
love this song. Jose Feliciano, good stuff right out there.
All right. I want to thank the guys today. Let's
start with Iowa. Sam. How you feeling about the hawk
Eyes Bolgate? Uh? Not not great? Um. Jeff and I
were just talking about how how is Iow ever going

(01:56:25):
to have a serviceable offense with Farrens? The Farrens is
still there? Is that the worst offense for a double
digit win team? Ever? I mean I possible, and it's
the worst offense they've had in uh Ever. By the way,
I did see Chuck Long on Tuesday night. Chuck Long
was there. Yeah, there you go. He span runner of it.

(01:56:48):
Horrible coach at Sandy goes Fall, great offensive coordinator Oklahoma though,
come on, but I saw him out there under tipp
It was one of the inductees. You can't escape those Hawking,
Charlie Kohler. When's that Campbell Awards. It's like the academic
Heisman Trophy. Charlie Cohler at the big tight end. He
is big, by the way, I realized he was that tall.

(01:57:10):
How tall is he s? Five? I mean he looks
six five. Yeah. So anyway, I have a stand great job.
Of course, Ralph Irvin doing it as always. Um, he's
a little unshocked that, uh, Chip Kelly is not returning
to Oregon as head coach. But it is what it is.

(01:57:32):
And uh and Danny G. Who, by the way, thank
you very much Danny for making Channon Spake part of
our show. Boy. Does she love you? Yeah, Justin and
Cincinnati tweeted me white women love you. She's also a fellow,
a fellow Charlotte Tonian. Yeah, yeah, lives in Charlotte too. No.

(01:57:54):
She she would come on in the with with Dan
in the morning once a week for like six years, right,
a long time. Yeah, so you have that. And she
basically acknowledge you have that mental control of her. Yeah,
pretty much. So she said, if Danny g calls I,
I don't have a choice. Boom, I'm in my robot.
So we're happy. To have her. She did a great job.

(01:58:15):
Look forward to talking her every Saturday. Uh. Fox NFL
sideline reporter. Alright, Jeff, it is that time Week four team?
By the way, do we know anything more about these
teams around the NFL in week fourteen than we did
in say week four? Um? Are we still week the week?
Who in els? I think? I think? But I think

(01:58:36):
part of it is that there are teams that we
know they're like that the Chargers, right, What do we
get week two week from the Chargers? The Browns, the Bengals? Right?
Some of these contending teams, the Cowboys. That's that is
kind of what they are, right is that's why they're
not elite teams, because we don't know we're getting from
them each week. You know what I've done, I've actually
done pretty well my last couple of weeks. I've I've
adopted a new style with this year. So I look

(01:58:58):
at the games, and I look at the lines, and
then I look at what seems to be the most
obvious winner like that, oh yeah, and then go the
other way. So who's who's it this week? I mean,
I'll give you a couple of games like that, like
one of them is uh, Cowboys at Washington and Dallas
is a four and a half point favorite. You're like,
wait a second here, Washington home four and a half

(01:59:21):
point dog Dallas because I know might so yeah. In
other words, it would see Washington is an obvious play
here getting four and a half points at home, go Dallas.
So that see, that's the way it would work at
this one road, a road public favorite getting over a
field I mean laying over a field goal. God bless you, Steve.

(01:59:43):
I mean that's what I'm saying. No, but that's that's
how this see. I know, but I still can't do it.
I can't do it alright, So picks have been terrible,
but I'll give you what I have this Um I have,
I have, Yes, I have Washington, uh us the four.
It was at four when I got it. I Cleveland
minus two and a half. That's when I got it

(02:00:04):
this week. I talked about the game earlier. Just the
Ravens are so beat up and Browns off of bye.
I have the Niners at plus one. I know that
game is now. I'll Niners are favorite by one or two.
The Seattle they're just you lose a game and Jimmy
gies up and down. That's part of the Niners the Giants.
I mean the forty Niners have favorite home. I mean
they have Bengals Chargers game last week that was like

(02:00:25):
three different games, was it not? It doesn't fumble, Chargers
probably lose. They probably lose that game. Yes, all right,
So and the forty Niners are favorite on the road
against Cincinnati. They were not people bet them to be
a favorite. I think they beat They're better with Scinnati.
I think they beat Cincinnati. Um, all right, I have

(02:00:46):
Tampa And minus three. I know that's at three and
a half. Now. I just think two teams going opposite directions.
I don't think the Bills are a turn on the
switch and play well in Tampa Bay type of team
this season with the issues to have on offense, the defense.
They beat up on really bad quarterbacks and really played
a good quarback. They struggled this this season. Um, and
then I have Green Bay minus twelve and a half.

(02:01:06):
You want to eleven and a half. You want to
know some some fun Aaron Rodgers numbers. I know you're
a big fan of numbers. Pull them up for you here.
I also like Chiefs Raiders under Chiefs and gun under
six of the last seven games Raiders outside of the
Cowboys a gun under three or last four? Okay, Matt
Law four the Packers head coach five and oh against
the spread and straight up against the Bears. Packers the

(02:01:29):
best team this season and covering against the spread. Rogers
covers sixty of his home games. He's twenty four and
twelve against the spread versus his division at home, he's
five to eleven. Five and one gets to spread off
of By. They're off of By and five and oh
gets to spread off of by FIRS NFC North. So

(02:01:53):
you're not convinced. Andy Dalton coming off his four interception games,
is back. You know what my play of the week
this week, I have a bonus Cowboys. No. Who was
the Chargers minus ten a game? Nolan's that nine and
a half? The Giant well yeah in this game. Now

(02:02:14):
they could have a look at a game. They got
a short week, they got a Thursday home game against
the Chiefs. But the Giants are awful and Mike Glennan's
at quarterback. Come on, Chargers big in that game. I
mean out of the Giants Wolf wolf flof Wolf wof
Flo all right, And by the way, you don't buy

(02:02:36):
the Cardinals on Monday Night against the Rams. Uh? No,
I I do. I just don't buy them being the Bucks.
And what point are you going to jump on the
Cardinals bandwagon? They do have the best record in the
NFL still and they want two out of three games
with Colt McCoy at quarterback. At what point are you
gonna start believing in the car Wow, that's a tough way. Alright. Uh,

(02:03:01):
we'll find out about the Heisman later on Big College
Football playoff schedule NFL. Keep it right here on Fox
Sports Radio.
