Speaker 1 (00:01):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio. Yes it is with
the great Bucky Brooks, Mark Willard. My man, there is
nothing better than getting into a sports weekend. And I
can smell football in the air, I think and uh,
and that means it's uh, it's high time to talk
(00:21):
to you. How you met my brother? I'm good. Hold on,
I gotta start of the show. I gotta start the
show by issuing an apology am a couple, because it's
rare that BB is wrong. But I must admit that
I might have been a little wrong the last few
times that we got together on this air. I may
have taken some shots at like your Bay Area team.
(00:43):
I may have taken some shots said like the Warriors
and talked about it's a wrap and they won't win
another title, YadA, YadA, YadA, And I gotta admit like
I didn't see it. I didn't see it coming. I
didn't see Steph Curry and Clay Thompson and Draymond winning
another one. So look, I gotta Liam so Ward and
just kind of and kind of own it, kind of
own it. I was wrong about the little engine they
(01:04):
could the little underdog team did it? Okay? Okay, all right,
here we go. I lost my guy for a minute.
But that's cool. Um so Foxword Saturday after I did
my apologies and on the go to State Warriors. We'll
get back with more once we get them reconnected. We
got a lot of things going on in the sports
world this week. We saw the Baker Mayfield trade where
(01:25):
Baker Mayfield ends up in Carolina he get a chance
to compete with Sam Donald. Uh. We have seen the
I guess, the expansion of conferences over the last week,
where USC and U c l A joined the Big Ten. Uh,
we have an opportunity to talk about that and what
it does to the college football landscape because it certainly
makes it different. Uh. Seeing USC in U c l
(01:45):
A play against those traditional powers in the Big Ten Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin,
Ohio State kind of changes up things because we used
to seeing those teams match up if they did match
up in the Rose Bowl, so that would be all
different and to change the evaluation. So say, but before
we get to that, I think I think my guys back,
I lost my guy. You know what, beautiful, No, that's
(02:10):
what the radio guys, the radio guys, you shouldn't you
shouldn't do it. So I've learned my lesson. I want
to apologize anymore for my takes because what happened, you bounced. No,
as soon as what happened is I'm like, I got
to go to the bathroom and bathe in this. That's
my gosh. That that was just it was just beautiful
(02:32):
and so good. Hold On, I'm looking at my I'm
looking at my work bag right here next to me,
and I still don't have little pieces of confetti in
itstead of parade three weeks ago. So I apologize if
I brought a little mess here into uh, into the show.
I didn't mean to do that, but much much bucky.
(02:54):
You know what though, hold on, hold on, so you
can fall on the sword, and I'm gonna I'm gonna,
I'm gonna give you an out. I'm gonna give you
a parachute right now because you didn't see it coming.
Let's be honest, neither did we. It worked out all
the brakes and it worked out work well. Hold on, now,
(03:16):
now that's where you will get some people. You will
get some people if you start doing all the brakes
on the south how so, how so, tell me about
the brakes I want to hear about the Brakes. Were
one who knew that the Phoenix Suns were going to
melt down? You know what I'm saying, Like you expected
them to be in the mix. And then you know
the Memphis Grizzlies. That is that a brak? Is that
(03:38):
a brake? Or but they but they melted, they met
other words, they weren't they weren't up to it. Yeah,
they melted, they fell apart. And then you know one
of the things that the Warriors have always I guess
benefited from along their run and their dynastic existence. Um,
the injury book tends to go to the team that
they're facing, right, So y'all Moran has to miss some games,
(04:01):
and so it looked like that thing was going. I mean,
it's just kind of always is something kind of lurking
around that. So whoever that which doctor is, whoever has
the voodoo doll and all that look, man, has happened
four four times and it's always something. Can I can
I speak for my people who I know right now
(04:22):
are listening to you, going, I'm sorry, Do we need
to take you through Clay Thompson's history so that you
know that two catastrophic injuries happened in the two year period,
and that Kevin Durant left his achilles in Toronto, and
and and that that has happened to them too, like
that that I'm not I'm not denying that some injuries
have happened in front of like once Likewise, I mean
(04:44):
they ended up well, they ended up with the worst
record in the NBA because the following year Clay and
Steph both got hurt. But but but you know, you know, Bucky,
you know this year an athlete. Now you know that
that narrative does not travel taking Toronto's championsh hip. We're
not taking Toronto's championship from them, and if we're not
taking Toronto's championship from him. I didn't any I didn't.
(05:08):
I didn't put an astricvite. I didn't say it was
like the Bubble Championship that sometimes I hear up in Northcale.
They want to put an astric on it when they
don't count. Yeah, like or when the World Series happens
and the Dodgers win and they doesn't doesn't asterix. So no,
I don't, I don't. I don't get down like that.
But it's just this is interesting. It's our running. I mean,
(05:31):
I do. I do love to point out to John
Moran and all of his fans that the Grizzlies was
getting whipped in that series. When he got hurt, they
were down to one and that just lost a game
by thirty with him in it. I mean, but remember, somehow,
somehow that suddenly turned into the Warriors wouldn't win if
John s kept playing Memphis, Memphis. That got harder for
(05:54):
the Warriors when they started playing defense when John left.
I don't know, just saying, but I think I think,
I think I saw like one of those fifty point
losses or whatever it was. I turned it off like
real early when the Warriors lost to him. Job played
in that game, right, he played in He didn't he
he didn't play the fifty point blow out. Nope, Nope,
I couldn't tell. There's so many buckets going in. There's
(06:16):
so many buckets, so many buckets, and he was over there, dads,
And though he did a great job on the sideline
letting everybody know about it, you cannot talk about somebody
being petty when the Warriors are the king of fetty,
the team that the team that's so called doesn't hear anything,
can go to the podium and quickly rattle off every tweet, quote, podcast,
(06:41):
anything and everybody everybody who is said anything about they
certainly kept the receipts. Step stuff called himself the petty
king at that parade. That's true. That's truth. And and
and that's the NBA. I mean, that's the NBA, right,
Like that's kind of part of the culture of the NBA.
Go all the way back to t kemby Matambo and
(07:03):
a block shot and a finger in your face, Like
you're allowed to do stuff like that in the NBA
and the NFL to a certain degree, which, by the way,
I love I I think fans going forward in this country,
they love it. It's it's something we talk about on
the baseball diamond all the time that they better learn
how to let personality in or or or they're dead.
(07:27):
They're dead. I mean the two I mean this is debatable,
but two of the very best players in the game
play in Anaheim on a team that is thirty seven
and forty eight and and and they're lost. They're lost.
I mean, man, my boys love them. And MLB the
show like the Angels get talked about when you're playing
(07:49):
a video game. But outside of that, they're irrelevant. And
a big part of it is Mike Trout walking down
the street in his own town and no one would
even oop him. They don't even know who he is.
And and part of that is because of that, that
kind of dynamic you were just talking about. Yeah, it's
just it's just a weird it's a weird. And you
(08:10):
write when you talk about the Angels, I mean, oh,
Tony and Trout, two are the best players that we
have seen, and no one cares about them, and no
one really cares about the game of baseball. I am
a devoted baseball guy. But yeah, because they take some
of the fund out. You can't you can't flip the bed.
They have all these unwritten rules that are unwritten, but
then everyone knows the rules. So you can't flip the bed.
(08:30):
You can't run too fast around the base, you can't
run too slow around the basis. When you hit a
home run, you gotta be careful when you applied up
tag a man, you applied to tag too hard. That's
a lot to keep up with. That's a lot. Uh.
I actually had a question off of that that I
want to ask you, and we got some trade Land stuff.
We got Baker Mayfield stuff to get to today for
short's Mark Weithering and Bucky Brooks on Fox Sports Saturday.
(08:53):
Dollar Shave Clubs six Blade Razor brings noticeably smooth shaves
with six stainless steel blades for swift hair removal and
a hubricating strip that keeps things smooth. Dollar Shape Club
Raisers are sold at Dollar Shape club dot com or
in stores. Bucky, I feel like you and I have
had this conversation when you've joined my show periodically during
the football season last year, that whole dynamic that the
(09:15):
Rams sort of developed, which I think it was Louis
Riddick at one point who said, there's a lot of it.
There's a big difference between star chasing and team building
and and and then and then the Rams went and
and darn won the Super Bowl and and so they
are one of those teams in American sports right now
that at least the perception is. I don't know why
(09:37):
the salary cap doesn't apply to them. It feels like
they've got a contract ready for everybody, and if there's
a big name available, bang, Jalen Ramsey, Odell Beckham, you
bet they're all in and and then it worked. But
if if we look around the sports landscape, it usually
doesn't hashtag Lakers, hashtag nets it used really doesn't work.
(10:02):
So so so that brings us actually to those angels,
Like I almost sort of wonder if you're a fan,
you don't want to be bored, so you want big names,
you want stars, But at what expense would you rather
have stars and a little bit of losing or no
names and winning? Oh? I mean, ultimately you want to win.
(10:24):
But why can't I have both? Why can't I have
stars and win? It's funny that you pointed to the
l A Lakers and brought them up, because the Lakers
have traditionally done that throughout their history. They've always accumulated
the stars, and they are one of the franchises that
are amongst the most when it comes to titles. This
is what they have done. Go back to Jerry West
and el Jin Bailey, go back to Kareem Abdul Jabbar
(10:47):
and Magic Johnson and the cast of characters that they
were as symbol around those guys. Let's look at Shaq,
Kobe and those other teams and then Lebron. That's what
they do, like, that's kind of how you have to
do it in l A. And when you really look
at l A, the city Hollywood, we need stars and
so what the Rams are They fully embraced that part
(11:10):
of it. They fully embraced They bring all the stars
and will surround those guys with some workmen like players,
and we'll find a way to get it done. So
for me, I do believe that you need stars to
be able to win. You just got to have the
right pieces around them so the stars can do what
they need to do to get us over the top. Okay,
So I completely agree with what you're saying, and that
is the history of the Lakers. However, where the Lakers
(11:32):
of today have gone wrong in my opinion and the
Rams have not is if you do look at that
history of stars and winning with the Lakers, what was
always at the core of it, that's the core of
it was somebody you drafted and somebody you cultivated and
somebody that grew together. The Lakers drafted Magic Johnson, and
(11:53):
they drafted James Worthy, and then they added Kareem Abdul
Jabbar and they added other pieces to that right and
then go to the more modern Lakers dynasty. Sure Shock
was acquired by a trade, and I know that technically,
uh Kobe didn't put a Laker hat on up on
the draft stage, but that was a draft day thing,
and that was a cultivated player who was the base
(12:14):
of their core. And even the Rams you add a quarterback,
but you know this, like Aaron Donald makes that operation
go as much as anybody. There are players like Cooper Cup.
There there's a base there that that the Rams then
added to and that works. What the Lakers are doing
now feels like, well, we're just out in the street
(12:34):
corner going hey, stars, everybody come on like, yes, we've
heard of you, come on over, you're in and and
it led to a collection of people that just at
least last year that I mean it clearly, I know injuries,
I get it, but it didn't fit. No, it didn't
fit right there. There There is something to that, because
(12:57):
ideally you love your stars to be homegrown. You would
like that, and in the perfect world, that's how you
want to do it. You want to draft develop, you
want those guys to develop in the stars, and then
you surround them with pieces that enable them to perform
at their highest levels. However, with the Rams. The Rams
are being able to do it with a little bit
of a mix. Right, So the homegrown guy is Aaron Donald,
(13:20):
but then you and Cooper Cup their home grown. But
then you look at Jalen Ramsey, best in the business
at his position. They plucked him from the Jacksonville Jaguars,
Matt do you Stafford? They swapped one of their home
grown stars in Jerry Golf and they felt like they
gotta upgrade a quarterback on somebody else's player. The thing
about the star collection, it puts pressure on your front
(13:43):
office to identify guys who are outside of the first rounds.
So you still need to be able to draft, well,
you may not be drafting at the top of the draft,
but you still need to be able to find players
who can fit those roles to supplement what your stars
are gonna provide on a weekly basis. Yep, I mean
the Rams don't ever have to worry about addressing good
(14:05):
players in the first round because they're never in the
first round. Um, so that that that it works out
rather well for him. The philosophy has worked. There's no
there's no doubt about it. All right, with all of
that on the table, I'm gonna ask you what sounds
like and we'll do this coming up next. I'm gonna
ask you what sounds like a stupid simple question, but
(14:25):
the answer And this not just for you, Bucky, this
is for me. This is for everybody listening. If I
asked you right now in sports, what season is it? Whatever,
the first thing that comes to your mind, that's gonna
set up where we need to go next, because I
have a feeling people's minds went to a place that's
(14:45):
not actually reality. Uh more on that coming up with
Bucky Brooks, Smart Willard, and this is Fox Sports Radio.

Oh man, this is like, this is a good soundtrack
(15:54):
to Steph Curry's life right now. I mean, he's getting
Bucky Brooks Upaul geez, He's in Edgewood, Tahoe right now.
Duncan balls in from a hundred and fifty yards out
playing by the beach, shooting free throws. I mean he
answered all the questions I think, didn't he? Oh wait, wait, wait,
(16:15):
wait wait, what do we mean all the questions, with
all the questions, with all the questions that I feel like,
I feel like the things that people still said about Steph,
I think that they can't say those anymore, Like you
come up with new ones, I guess, and and and
they will. And by the way, that was steps thing,
(16:37):
that was STEP's thing at the parade, his mantras, What
will they say next? Oh? He is actually spent a
couple of days trying to figure it out. So what
it sounds like you got some things. What what what
do you got? I mean, I'm just saying, like, no,
he did it, like I mean he did. He put
this guy, he put this one on his back. So
this is the title that he did. Like Kevin Duran
didn't come in and kind of do all the heavy
lifting for me. He kind of slid in Like no,
(16:59):
he did it. He did it like he did it.
This this is the one he was able to do.
Finally four times, four times, four times the chart he
was able to get m VP forgot to be talking
about being a top ten player. He got one. He
got one. He got it. We needed we needed to
get one. He got one. He got one on the
fourth try. He got it. It's funny when they were
on the top of the buses, they were not holding
(17:20):
up once. They were holding up fours like, oh, I
got I got one. He got one, he got he
got He got a finals MVP where where he was
able to he was able to kind of do the thing.
So he did it. He put him on his back.
He exploded. Was a game four. He had the explosion
up in Boston where it was the first time we've
seen him like go Bananas, where he really just kind
(17:42):
of put the team on his back. Was Yeah, that
was a performance. Yeah that was before Hey, that was
that was a classic. That was That was one that
will go down. That was the one that everyone's like, Okay,
I see it now. I see what the hype has
always been about like the last ten or so years.
I see it now. I see bitch, I do I
said it. I saw it. I was like, okay, step
(18:04):
this sense. You didn't see it until then you just
hit you three weeks ago. You're like, oh, I hadn't
seen it. I hadn't seen it. I hadn't seen it
in the finals. I mean, I hadn't seen it in
the finals like that, I didn't seen it, like because
you gotta remember, you gotta remember before. He was like, okay,
so like you look, I've seen you. I've seen you
(18:25):
because you're a food kind of stew it right, and
so I know back in the day you were always
big on like hey, ma, I'm gonna have the chicken
breast and the asparagus and this and that like before
like like like before, like when we think about the
meal that you used to love, like the chicken breast,
the asparagus and maybe a little fruit cup on the
outside like before before Step was more like the asparagus, right,
(18:48):
Kevin Durant was a chicken breast. He was kind of
like the feature part of the meal. But the step
would kind of come in and do his thing like
the exparagus or whatever in the fruit cup or whatever.
Like he was aside. But this one, hey, he was
kind of like the man ire and it was refreshing
to see thinking in twenty what in you think andre
(19:12):
Iguadala was grilled chicken? Oh no, no, andre a Guadala
like the MVP was like the m v P who
was allowing what thirty five points per game or whatever?
That was? What was like that? Like that? That was
asparagus until three weeks ago? Then what was he in
when he was the league was being clearly the best
(19:34):
player on the first one, the pre k D one,
he was he was the league. He was the league MVP, right,
But that was that was also the series where Kyrie
Carey went Barker's Game one, didn't play again, and it
was like Delladova who was was in Delodova guard guarding
him or somebody like that, like night he's not he
didn't play, sent him to the hospital to the hospital.
(20:00):
I mean, I mean, so that's what I'm saying, like
he's out of here. I think J. J. J. J.
Reddick said it when he was talking about Bob Couzi,
like plumbers and accountants and stuff like that. Dover like,
no disrespect the Delver with Dolar like he's a nice
a nice little career. But exactly, I mean dogs. So
it's furious at this conversation. Yes, he's mad at me, right,
(20:21):
noh gosh, Matthew Delava dolv and Bob Couzi are two
the all time grades athletically in the history of American sport.
I was saying, it was nice. Yeah, so step did it.
So look you know what. Look Steph can't see it,
but I'm standing up. I'm standing up. Look, standing ovation
for Steph and what he did and his fourth golf
(20:44):
clan is for me. Yeah it was. It was a
great one golf club, great one, great one. Congrats that Congress.
It was nice. He's good to see. You can tell him,
you can tell him. You can't do man. Look, I
can't say anything to Draymond either, because here's what I love,
Like what Draymond remind you when I was coming up.
We used to play basketball at this outdoor park, right,
and it used to be this, oh man, Myron Mayron
(21:08):
was old man at the park. He used to hold
it down like he was the forty year old player
against all the kids. Now Myron couldn't make any shots,
couldn't do anything, but he was the main yakker and talker.
And what I loved about Draymond. Draymond went full goon
in Game two, and it worked out because I knew
it was over when he and Gary Payton the second
(21:30):
followed Jason Tatum to the huddle, and there was not like,
oh my God, like and and and the Celtics. And
the Celtics were not like, hey man, it's on site.
They weren't like, hey man, we gotta scrap this out.
I knew then. I was like, it's a rap, Like
Draymond is just gonna full goon, really hockey, google yah,
(21:53):
full hockey. The ball and he wouldn't give the ball back.
He took the ball. I can't make it were it
was white men kid't jump, but with fifty million dollar contracts,
like I'm gonna go to my car, I'm gonna get
my gun, I'm gonna shooting like he took the balls,
and I'm like, it's an NBA game, you gonna get
(22:14):
the balls of time. The whole thing was the timeout.
It's a time out and Draymond and get right in
a second, they bullied them, and I knew at that point.
I was like, it's a rap because Draymond went full good.
He went full old man at the park and he
turned into Myron because yeah, he wait for two games
(22:36):
and he came back in game six and he wasn't
He wasn't Myron anymore. Uh, he loved him playing good basketball.
But I yeah, no, he's All of Famer worked, He's
gonna be a Hall of Famer. Now, he's gonna be
a Hall of Famer. He is like, it's gonna be crazy.
He can get a red jacket. STEP's gonna get a
red jacket, Clay Thompson's gonna get a red jacket. Steve
Kirk gets a red jacket, red jackets for everybody that speech.
(23:01):
I mean, get me ready for that one right now.
Draymond Green Holiday, King of Petty, King of Petty, King
of Petty. He may he may do his podcast right
their own location at the left turn. He might he
might just because I've never seen it happy doing He's
doing podcast post game basically in front of everybody. I'm like,
(23:22):
what is this dreaming? Might as well doing that during
the time out, so I mean, like there and do
another meeting. It was like hash sag new media. There
it is, um King of Petty. We'll see, We'll see.
Michael Jordan did a pretty good job of keeping receipts
in his Hall of Fame speech. We'll see some day
if if Draymond can match it. Okay, we're gonna get
(23:43):
to what's trending, but but just real quick, give me,
give me a one word answer. What season is it?
Football season? Ah? Always perfect forever? That is well, okay,
so that's a perfect answer, so that we can get
(24:03):
into the problem with what everybody's saying about trade lance.
We'll do it in just a second. Let's get many
Belano sit here with what is trending? What season is it?
Can I say it's off season? You know what I mean,
it's slow season season that sees that feeds my point. Yes,
(24:29):
you can say that, you can totally. It's yes, exactly exactly.
I mean, how are you guys today? Happy Saturday? Oh
to you everything. It's fantastic. Yeah, let me tell you.
Let me tell you who is not asparagus. Step Let
me tell you who's never been as step Okay, let's
(24:53):
get that. Let's just get that out. Not once. Okay,
the food that was so funny. I laughed out loud,
but so inaccurate. So thank you for the laugh. But
let's let's not let we don't have time for jokes. Now,
let's be real. Steph Curry is amazing, and he was
(25:14):
in twenty fifteen. I love stuff and I'm not even
a Warriors fan, but I love stuff. I love his game,
and I never thought he's been the side dish. Not once.
My goodness, Wait, Thompson's over here, man. He's the fruit cup.
He's the little apple turnover in the TV dinner. He's
the apple turnover. You could have even said dessert which
(25:36):
people can't turn down, literally, vegetables that nobody wants to eat.
You didn't even say the end, monsy. You and I
are vibing right now, But I don't want any asparagus slander. Okay, Yes,
I love my vegging, but you know, in general, people
don't like it. All right, Well, I think we can
(26:06):
agree that Damian Lillard has never been asparagus ever and
he has agreed to a two year, hundred and twenty
two million dollar contract extension with the Blazers, and sources
say he's expected to sign this today in Las Vegas,
so we'll see if it's becomes official. Today, we have
a new winner of Wimbledon Women's single Championship and it's
(26:27):
Helena Revakana. Now here's what's interesting about this twenty three
year old. She was actually born in Moscow, but has
represented Kazakhstan since eighteen. That's when the country offered her
funding to support her tennis career. This has obviously been
controversial because Wimbledon did not allow players from Belarus or
Russia to play, so it's been a bit of a controversy.
(26:49):
But she has officially won her first ever women's singles
championship at Wimbledon. Good for her. Twenty three years old.
More drama, More stuff in golf. The Royal and Ancient
Golf Club of St. Andrew's announced today that they didn't
invite two time Open Championship winner and Live Golf CEO
Greg Norman to the hundred and fiftieth anniversary celebration at St.
(27:11):
Andrew's next week. They told him he's not invited, So clearly,
still a lot of drama when it comes to the
Gulf over there. And right now in Major League Baseball,
we do have some games going on. The Tigers are
taking taking on the White Sox in Chicago, and Chicago
has a three zero lead thanks to a Gavin Sheets
four hundred and eighty foot three run homer in the
(27:32):
first inning. And we have a tide games second inning
between the Phillies and the Cardinals. Nobody on the scoreboard yet.
That's all I got for you, guys right now, come
over here. Sorry, sorry, the chips and guac of this
show just again, even better than a see like all
(27:57):
the things you could have picked but you could hyspare guess.
I think I think his wife International House of Smoke, right,
I think that's I think it's something like smoke. Yeah,
something like that. Yeah. And I used to Curry can't cook,
she can't cook. And and and asparagus has cooked correctly.
(28:21):
It's delicious. It's delicious. It is it is salted. You
gotta grill it. But anyway, Um, by the way, gosh,
forget Draymond or step being the Petty King. I think
it's the entire sport of golf. Um that that was
That was an interesting story. Monster was just talking about
uh the r and A, the royal and ancient, not
(28:43):
even allowing Greg Norman to come, which I get, But
I mean that that's the live golf thing. Um. Man,
are a lot of people. Man, there's a lot of hypocrisy. Yeah,
but there's a lot of hypocrisy involved in the anger
as well. I just think the whole thing is bad
for for golf. I mean, look, take another sport. What
(29:04):
if we just dropped into the NFL and the like
we're gonna take half the good quarterbacks and go start
something else, Like everybody suffers, you know what I mean.
So speaking of that, though you called it football season,
called it the off season, which is also a phenomenal answer,
you notice nobody called it baseball season. Um and and
(29:26):
that kind of brings me to my point. And I
will tell you this. Uh. You know, Colin Calhern and
Mike Silver had a a conversation that did the social
media dance this week about Trey Lance and arm fatigue.
I'm sure you saw it, Okay that that got a
lot of run here in the San Francisco Bay area,
(29:47):
and and one of the reasons that it's sort of
like pique my interest maybe in a little bit of
a different way, because I don't really think and we
even have you know, we got doctors who sports orthos
who come on the show every week. They're like and
fatigue for football players is not even a thing like
that doesn't even really make a whole lot of sense.
It's not like dead arm in baseball or whatever. But
(30:08):
because of social media, because of phones, and because of
sports gaming, all things that are not just rising in
our world for many of us, they are our world.
It feels like we have a really hard time, especially
with players were excited about, and Trey Lance is definitely
(30:30):
one of those. We have a really hard time waiting
to actually see reality. We can't. We cannot just wait
and see actual play. It's almost as if we're betting
on the players themselves. We don't have any money on this.
I don't think you can go to Vegas and be like,
(30:50):
I'd like to bet on I got twenty dollars say
Trey Lance is good. You can't do that. But that's
the conversation we're having as opposed to anything substantive. Right now,
we're in this sort of like fake reality conversation betting
on is he good? Is he bad? Innuendo? You don't
(31:12):
hear it about the other four first round quarterbacks from
last year because we saw them. Yeah. Now, look, it's
it's really interesting because between the Tray Lance thing and
the Jordan Love thing and even now justin Fields and
the way they're talking about Zach Wilson, like we do
not have a lot of faces when it comes to
the young quarterback thing. We want the young quarterback to
step into the league and to set the league ablaze
(31:35):
year one. And for trade Lance, you know, like here's
the thing about the Niners, Um, Jimmy Roppolo's record, look
makes it really really hard to move him out, Like
trade Lance is gonna have to be spectacular doing training
camp and those things to kind of move him out.
And by all the accounts, Jimmy Garoppolo is a good
dude in the locker room. The chemistry and the connectivity
between Jimmy g and his teammates, you see that. You
(31:57):
see how he's guys speak up for him and talk
about him and revere him. And so for trade Lance,
I think if anything. As we're looking at the situation,
we should kind of look at it and say, well,
maybe this is a situation where they're doing the Pat
Mahomes thing where he said the whole year they gave
my opportunity to kind of figure it out, for the
(32:18):
game to slow down, and then when they unleash him,
maybe this year he has an opportunity to be successful.
I think we've forgotten about Aaron Rodger said the first
two years of his career before he finally had an
opportunity to play, and look, the sitting down, the watching
and observing did him well, because when he jumped on
the field, he was ready to play. I don't understand
(32:40):
why there's all this angst and anxiety about trade lance.
If he's not ready to play, he's played Jimmy garoppolo
if he's still there. So to me, it's really a
lot about nothing, much ado about nothing. Man, he'll development,
he's ready to play, He'll played well. And and to
your point, we expect quarterbacks to come in set the
world blaze right away, and I'm trying to remember the
(33:02):
last time that happened. If ever, I mean even the
young quarterbacks who have come in and right Patrick Mahomes
had a year on the bench. Josh Allen, it took
a minute, um, you know, for for for his accuracy?
Um whatnot? You mentioned Aaron Rodgers. If we want to
go a little further back, like uh, Peyton Manning famously
led the league and interceptions as a rookie, like who
(33:25):
who who came in? Early first round, top ten, top
fifteen pick? Who came in and right away? You know,
people will say Roethlisburger, but that was different. They were
running the ball, Like there's no quarterback that comes in
as a rookie, and Trey is even a different kind
of rookie. Small school, didn't play a lot pandemic all
(33:45):
of that, Like we you don't come in as a
rookie and run this league. You did. That just doesn't happen.
And so so Trey has turned into a Christmas present
that your parents told you you can't open, just like
you just just like, yeah, well we're we're gonna put that,
or you can wait in June, you can open that.
Driving so you start you start making up different ideas
(34:06):
about what's in that box, like and it's great and
actually it's awful, and it's a disappointment and no, it's perfect.
It's gonna be the best skift I've ever got. Like
I've heard everything about Trey from He's gonna be m
v P to his arms gonna fall off just this summer. Yeah,
I mean, it really has been, um a weird thing
(34:27):
to kind of see the dialogue and those things. And
I think what's more remarkable is Noe's really been able
to see him like a practice or those things. He
played a handful of games when he did play. It's
funny because he has some games where he showed up
through some big touchdowns, ran a little bit, but even
then he doesn't necessarily get credit for that because it's
always like yeah, but yeah, but I mean, at some point,
(34:49):
you know, we have to acknowledge like the forties Niners
offense is a run first offense. They are creative, maybe
the most creative run game that you're gonna see. At
the heart of his heart, his heart of hearts, Cal
Shanahan wants to blood you with the running game. He
wants to smoke in mirrors and do some of the
acute stuff. But they can hit you right in them
out and then they want to set it up with
they want to set it up with the run and
(35:10):
then throw misdirection play action passes for explosive plays, Chunk plays,
trail Lands can do that. He will be able to
do that. We've seen him do that, and so all
of this stuff. We just need to be patient. But
we can't, man, we just can't. We just ready Chunk
to be able to win. Gotta have an opinion on
We gotta say he can he can't do it, YadA,
YadA YadA, instead of like, hey, let's let's see what
(35:31):
it looks like. Let's see what it looks like. This
is opportunity. You know this as well as anyone with
everything that that that the NFL world goes to you
for on the draft leading up to the draft, the
day after the draft. I mean, we can get to
that a little bit coming up next and and then
top of the hour, Baker Mayfield, Sam Donald. The dynamic
(35:52):
that will now unfold in Carolina is about as fascinating
of a of a quarterback build up for its about
as we get in today's NFL. So uh well, we'll
hop into that as well. That's the great Bucky Brooks,
Mark Willard, Fox Sports Radio. Okay, it's Fox Sports Saturday
with Bucky Brooks. I'm Mark Willard. A reminder, the Dollar
(36:15):
Shave Club six Blade razor brings noticeably smooth shaves with
six stainless steel blades for swift hair removal and a
lubricating strip that keeps saying smooth. Dollar Shape Club razors
are sold at Dollar Shape Club dot com or in stores.
Do they make you do draft grades? Bucky? Do you
have to come out next day and grade all the teams? Yeah? Like,
(36:36):
that's typically part of deal because the man fans love
grade man, They just love them. I know, favorite Why
Why do we love them? Because everyone wants to always
know where they stand. It's a big part of the deal,
I guess. But but I guess. I guess I want
to know why we have the quirk in our brain
(36:56):
that we think after reading that we do know where
we stand because we don't. Like I I, has anyone
ever thought of this? And maybe it would die on
the vine, But I actually think it'd be interesting, Like
have you ever gone back and sort of a either
checked the grades two years later or come out with
(37:18):
draft grades two years later? Because what I would find
really interesting is let's track a regime and see how
they're actually doing. Because perceptions run wild. We think Bill
Belichick never misses, is so smart, he's never had a
bad pick, right, and and and uh, and the jet
(37:41):
had a good one like and and all of that
is not reality. How how come? How come we're not
asking to do this two or three years later? I
think it'd be interesting. Uh. Sometimes sometimes you do it,
and sometimes you do a little reflection, a little review,
but that isn't satisfied the the appetite at the moment
(38:03):
when draft weekend comes and goes. We want to know
who the winners and losers were. That's that's what we're conditioned.
We're conditioned as a culture to note that there's a winner,
there's a let's figure out who who won. And so
it's one of those things that we have to do.
But yeah, if you are really in the business two
to three years, you want to go back and read
your report. You want to see who you hit on,
(38:26):
who you missed on. If you did have a miss
why did you miss on them? What was it about
them that lead you to miss on them. It's it's
just one of those things that you just always want
to do because you want to get better, you want
to be better at your craft, and so you should
review it. You should see how these guys are doing.
Another thing that you need to do when you're thinking
about putting UH grades on players, you need to look
(38:48):
around and see who's actually playing. Because as much as
we think the league is full of perfect players that
have that, there are a lot of imperfect players who
are having success. And it might lead you to be
necessarily a little more lenient, but maybe a little more
understanding when it comes to issue out those grades that
hey man, there is a path I just got to
play in the league, but he's going to have to
(39:08):
play like this much like this player was able to
have success? What what grade did you get? And this
is I mean there's a million examples every single time
there's a draft. But like remember when Kyler Murray went
number one overall and then there was that big debated
number two Nick Bosa Quentin Williams. I did did you
like that? The day after? Uh? Like? So, going back,
(39:31):
I want to say, maybe hed Califery I might have
had Quinny Williams as the best player in the draft
because he was a monster inside. Looking back, though, he's
a one year wonder at Alabama, and now you wonder. Hey,
it was a little hard on Nick Bosa because Nick
Bosa was heard played three or four games and shut
it down. So it's one of those things you always
have to re evaluate. Uh, speaking of wonders in one year,
(39:54):
one year in Carolina to figure out the QB that's next.
They are both first round draft picks. But this guy
who's gonna break it down right now was a second
round draft pick. That's Bucky Brooks, Mark Willard, Fox Sports Saturday,
Glad you're with us. The Carolina Panthers, Uh, they don't
(40:14):
have one. They have two quarterbacks, and the old adages,
if you have to, you have none. But certainly presumably
the starter is Baker Mayfield. And when I look at
both of these guys, in some ways, I think it's
less about the actual football they've played, and it may
even be less about the football they're still going to play,
(40:35):
and it's more about the perception of who they're going
to be that's going to decide the remainder of their career. Now,
as I said that, remember you were forty overall, right,
second round draft pick. Okay, so second rounder carries with
it two different labels at once. You're not a first rounder,
(40:55):
so and those are right, those are that those are
those dudes. But second rounder, that's a thing. That's that's
not that's not a pick that you're just like, you know,
let's see if it works out. There's expectations that are
attached to that. So what what was your experience in
the league, Because we know the earlier your picks, the
(41:17):
more a team is going to invest in you, the
more they're gonna stay with you. They want to prove themselves, right, Like,
how did you feel your draft position then affected your career? Okay,
So here's why I say Baker Mayfield will have to
learn how to adjust because for so long he's been
the number one overall pick. But he was the number
one overall pick for the Cleveland Browns. So the Browns
were fully invested in him. It was really man their
(41:41):
duty and obligation to make sure they did everything to
put him in a position to succeed. Because they drafted
the number one overall. You want to make sure that
everyone sees hey, man, Okay, I understand why they took him.
He was the best play in the draft. They made
sure he's done this. He's elevated the franchise, YadA, YadA, YadA. Well,
now that he is moved on, he's traded away. But
(42:02):
when he goes to Carolina, he's no longer carries that
cashe of the number one overall pick. They weren't invested
in him. They're only paying him but three point five
million dollars when it comes to it, So now it changes.
You know, he gave up three point five and they're
paying him four point five point five? What was what
(42:23):
was the overall number? Wasn't he he was about to
make eighteen almost he gave back three and a half.
They're paying him four point and then they split the rest,
then the then the Browns are picking up ten million.
So the Panthers had Baker Mayfield at a little under
five million dollars mark like five million dollars his backup
quarterback money. So when everyone talks about, oh, he absolutely
(42:47):
has to be the starter will hold on? I guess
how must Sam Donald is making from the Carolina Panthers
eighteen point eight million dollars and his guaranteed. So this
is a true competition in terms of they're gonna play
the best player, and so for Baker coming in late,
it's hard because then you get six weeks to make
(43:08):
this happen. You get four weeks of camp leading up
to the preseason games. You have one maybe two preseason
games before they have to make the announcement of who
the starter is. That's it. He has to ball out
in a major way to be able to make this happen.
It's hard. He's against the odds and so yeah, being
a former number one pick, that's great, but it means nothing. Well,
(43:32):
and Sam was to not number one overall, but what
was the third overall? I think the first time, the
first time we've seen this situation where you had two
tough five quarterbacks on the same team since the nineteen
eight like Oakland Raiders when Jim Plunkett and Dan past Marine,
both those guys were drafted one in three respectively in
one Now, while Carolina is paying a lot more for Sam,
(43:55):
they also were not the team that made that pick.
So there's also something they're like, it's not a staff
that's like, well, we've got to prove that we were
right because we moved heaven and Earth and gave up
massive assets to get this guy. You're talking about a
different helmet for both of them now, here's the other thing.
Here's the other thing though, And this is why I
(44:16):
bring up perception because and for instance, this is something
that that may end up if the situation ever gets resolved,
this may end up affecting Jimmy Garoppolo as well. Like
I always think quarterbacks have to be very very careful
about looking like they're a backup, even if they're not
a backup. Like that visual is really important around the league,
(44:41):
where they go, Okay, you're you're a backup. The problem
for Sam and this is working for Baker. This is
only team too for Baker. And I know you're going,
wait a minute, this is only team too for Sam, right,
but he already played and he looked exactly the same
in Carolina that he did in New York, which was
(45:02):
you're talented, you can do some things. But there's absolutely
no one on earth that looks at him play and goes, yeah,
that's somebody who could lead us to a Super Bowl someday.
Baker Mayfield, there's still a question where you're like, Okay,
you were number one overall. You did certainly bring Cleveland
to places it hadn't been before. It wasn't perfect, but
(45:25):
the league right now looks at Baker, I think, and
still says that's a QB one. I think Sam is
in a spot where he is right on the line
of being branded for the rest of his career as
a QB two. Yeah, that's why I said this is
like a w W E match, right, This is a
loser leave town match because if you don't win the
(45:47):
starting job here, you have to leave because you're not
gonna be perceived as a starting quarterback or yea with
starting quarterback potential. That's hard. And so with Sam Donald
and Baker Mayfield, this would be legit and people are
just automatically assuming Baker wins it. And look, he may
very well end up being the starter, but this is
a legitimate competition because, as we've talked about it, the
(46:10):
team isn't investor really an either guy. So this is
a rare opportunity where look, we're gonna put the ball down,
we're gonna split the reps, and then you gotta go
figure it out because Baker is coming late. I give
Sam Donald did not because he has the head start,
but huh, if this is did you know this is
gonna be how you play and it has to happen.
(46:32):
So I think the perception as to why Baker's gonna
play is because they went and got him. If if
they if they liked Sam, why would they even do
the deal. Much like when the Seattle Seahawks were trying
to find a quarterback prior to Russell, you just gotta
keep throwing darks. You gotta find a quarterback now. By
(46:52):
all accounts, Sam Donald's played last year didn't warrant a man.
You're the starter. Don't worry about it. We're not gonna
bring anybody in. No, they brought Cam Newton in the
middle last year because they didn't know what Sam Donald
was going to do, and so they want to get
better playing performance from that position. And if you have
(47:15):
to bring someone in and make Sam Donald and Baker
Mayfield compete and win the job, and so be it.
If you're mat rule at the end of the day,
I need a starting quarterback that can win games, and
whoever that is, I'm gonna roll with that. And so
Mcaround may get a shot. I'm playing the best quarterback
to see what I can do to win games. Uh.
(47:35):
It is a fascinating quarterback division for sure, and and
in fact, um it's the kind of division where I
could see at minimum a team stepping forward to compete
for a wild card that we've sort of left for dead.
I mean, everything is turned over now in that division
other than Tom Brady. Um, and you know, we're we're
(47:55):
sort of done now with the idea of, well, maybe
this is the year Tom wall look old, like we've
just is it? Or are you kidding kidding? Way? Why
is this the year? Because I thought was the year,
like you know what, he looks No, the the year
(48:17):
that the forty Niners acquired Garoppolo, which was what that's
four years ago. Tom Brady was coming off of a
year where I was like, this is starting to look
a little wobbly. But then he was he was fine,
he was fine. And then when he became a free
agent and he wanted to join the Niners, then there
were a lot of people self included, who were like,
(48:40):
wait a minute, did you he's starting to look old
last year. There's no way that this is a good move. Now,
I'm not going to bet on Tom brady futures, and
and and then he went on the Super Bowl, so
we got to be done on Tom's going to be
old this year? Right, He's never going to be old ever,
just Lebron. It's the same thing. At some point, man,
(49:02):
if Father Time is going to win out, you start
seeing a little slippage. We don't. You didn't see it
necessarily from Tom last year because the numbers were absolutely ridiculous.
But at some point, at some point, it has to happen.
At some point, he's gonna face I don't know this
whole Father Time is undefeated thing. I don't know if
I believe it anymore. Oh my god, I can't believe
forever completely fall off. Tom is the unicorn. He's the
(49:27):
only one that's been able to kind of fight off
Father Time. He's probably peppering with jabs, but at some
point it's coming. It has to. I mean again, Father
Time is the best in the world. But you can't
call him undefeated anymore. If Tom plays until he's sixty,
like we we can't what what he's not undefeated? Like
(49:47):
there was a web series called Tom Versus Time and
like five years ago and he's still still I don't
know when it was, maybe not five, but it was
at least three, and and we're still sitting here and
he's like getting drunk and throwing super Bowl trophies in
the water, and and and still being like an early
(50:10):
fantasy pick for quite like, I don't know, I think
I think Father Time has been defeated. Um. I mean,
I can't all the way say yes. But he's doing
a good job. He's taking him to round twelve. How
about that? Man, that's fair. So there's Tom and provided
(50:31):
that that Father Time doesn't win this year, obviously that's
the team. But if he were to show some age.
You look at this battle going on in Carolina. You
look at Mariota taking over in Atlanta, Questions there for
sure at a minimum. You look at Winston taking over
in New Orleans, um, and and who knows whatever else
(50:54):
they'll throw at everybody. Even though it's a pretty Uh,
I don't know if it's a great roster. It's a
good roster, it's an interesting one. They've got the Cameara issues.
Uh that that that they're dealing with. Like, I don't know.
That division is fascinating, and I don't know that there's
much that could happen that would surprise me. Um, I
(51:15):
mean a division is the division is fascinating. I think
at the end of the day, man, you're looking to
see which team is going to be able to kind
of build momentum heading down the stretch, because that's what
it is. You don't want to overreact to what happens early.
You want to kind of assess it. And typically goes
down to the best quarterback. Everythink who you think is
gonna give you the best quarterback play? Dear Mark, who
(51:36):
are you banking up? Well? I would bet I would.
You're talking about Carolina or the division? The division? We think,
we think Tom? You think not? Bet on? Tom? Think
Tom is going to play everybody, even though in New Orleans.
Would bet on that James is heating up fourteen touchdowns
on the interceptions. Fourteen touchdowns only three interceptions. They feel
(51:57):
like they are kind of like the kryptonite to time
because of the success to David. You know, Tom's had
a tough time dealing with the Saints. That's true, That's true.
There's a good defense saying you're talking coming coming up,
and you gotta be petty. He's petty too. Well, yes,
the greats, the greats always are. So so if it
(52:22):
all comes down to quarterback play, then why can't this
guy play Week one in September. We'll get to that
because you already mentioned it one time earlier, and we'll
circle back to that coming up next with Bucky Brooks
it Smart Welling on Fox Sports Radio. So I threw
this out to some people who run in my circles
(52:45):
here in San Francisco, Bucky, and and I don't know
if we've gotten to a good answer, So I'm gonna
throw it at you, Bucky Brooks, Mark Wethering, Fox Sports Radio,
gladuate with us on a Saturday. I hope you are
enjoying or getting something done, being productive, uh, joint family time,
whatever you're doing as you do it with us, Thank
(53:06):
you so much. So we see this in sports a lot.
Now there's so much analytics. There are a lot of
teams that have decided in taking analytics to the way
they build rosters. Sometimes injuries bring opportunity. You find a
player who you're like, that's a good player, and they're
(53:28):
a little dnked up, and so now the market is
kind of dried up on that player. But if we
get that player and then once that player gets healthy,
hey we've got ourselves something. And we gotta you know,
cheaper than we would have and and man, we pulled
one on the league and we see that all over
the place. Yet at the same time we're being told, oh,
(53:51):
oh no, nothing can happen with Jimmy Garoppolo until that
shoulder is one billion percent healed, he has had a
throwing some poe zum, he's interviewed with all thirty teams
and spoken to the President of the United States. Nothing
can happen until then, Like I mean, it's you, this
whole this shoulder injury, that was everything, and then you
(54:14):
even threw in a couple of minutes ago. You're like, yeah,
trade Lance, he should be ready to play unless he's
not the best quarterback in camp, and maybe that'll be
Jimmy Garoppolo if he's still there. And there are some
people that immediately I'm sure, thought, well that's not even possible.
But is it, like what is actually through your eyes?
(54:37):
What's actually going on there? So here's the thing with
Jimmy Garoppolo and San Francisco forty niners, San Francisco forty
nine of Jed York I think has already been on
record saying that, hey, if we have to carry him
for another year, we're fine. We have the money to
do it. I think right now, the quarterback room is
occupying maybe twenty three million plus dollars on the camp. Okay,
(54:57):
that's a doable deal. You got two quarterbacks. You don't
necessarily want to have Jimmy Garoppolo on the roster occupying
so much money, but if you have to, they can
do it. Here's the thing, A lot of it is
determined by trade lands. Jimmy Garoppolo is rehabbing, but that
has given the nine as an opportunity to fully see
trade lands throughout the off season. They kind of have
(55:18):
these mile post where he wanted to. Certainly hear like
a like seim looked like this, twing o, t A
S and mini camp. If he looks like that, seems
like he's trending, well, we're good. Hey, Let's see what
he looks like in training camp. Does he feel like
he can handle it. Let's go to the first preseason
game and see if he's up on it. Okay, we
feel good about him. All right, Let's let's move on
(55:40):
from Jimmy Garoppolo. Because Jimmy Garoppolo was nursing the injury,
it prevented him from being able to make the move
in the off season. Because no one wants to trade
for an injured player, and so Jimmy Garoppolo was always
going to have to show teams that he could throw
that there's not um any there aren't any lingering issues
from the surgery and those things. And so now what
(56:03):
Denners have done. You look around, where are the seats,
musical chairs with all the dance card? The card dance
card is full up, it's full. So now what you
do is you may go into training camp and maybe
you wait for the Sam Bradford thing to happen. You
remember what that was Phladephia Eagles draft. Carson Wentz, Sam
Bradford is there and it was like, oh my god,
(56:25):
I got Sam Bradford, Carson Wentz and Mark Sanchez. What
are they going to do? Titty Bridgewater gets hurt, poop
ship off Sam Bradford first round pick and the way
they go. The San Francisco Fordia Honors now have to
slow play this. The trade deadline isn't into November one,
all right, we need to keep Jimmy that long. We'll
do it because one thing, we know, there's a quarterback
(56:48):
that is going to get hurt, and a team is
going to panic about their quarterback situation, and at that time,
that's when Jimmy Garoppolo get moved if he's not the
starting quarterback in San Francisco. Okay, So that's fascinating because
I'm hearing a couple of things, is you break all
of that down. So, uh, first of all, you're not
(57:09):
just waiting for August because there is that thought that
they want to do it before week one, because once
you get to week one, now that salary kicks in.
It's not a guaranteed number. It's twenty four million, but
it's not guaranteed. They can cut him right now and
pay none of it. But as you pointed out, ownership
has said, no, we're not necessarily worried about the financial
(57:32):
side of it. So you're extending it a from August
into September and October as well in terms of when
a quarterback is going to get hurt. The other side
to that, though, that you said that's fascinating to me,
is you are still waiting to see trade lance in
actual game action and decide he's the guy where one
(57:54):
thousand percent we're all in. Like that feels like your
leave open the possibility that Jimmy plays more games in
San Francisco is the quarterback. Yes, I am, I am.
Because he's still on the rose, there's a possibility that
he can play. And because I've seen my team. I've
seen the Niners go to the super Bowl with Jimmy
(58:17):
Garoppolo at quarterback. Yeah, I'm not just gonna throw him out. Look,
I saw this team play and play well. I saw
this team take the ramps to the brink like no, no, no, no, no, no,
We're not We're not moving on until we absolutely have
to when it comes to that. So let's play this out.
Let's see what it looks like less baked. Trade Lance
(58:40):
earned the job, and make sure that we are fully
confident that he is ready to help us go a
step beyond where we've gone with Jimmy Garoppolo before we
completely move on. Because if ownership is on it, Yeah,
if ownership is on it, then I look, I'm gonna
let this play out. Okay, I get all that. I
guess the in the concern would be, Okay, you've had
(59:02):
Trade Lance uh in your system since draft, so you've
had him for a full year. Now, you've had another
off season program where he was the QB one. Jimmy
didn't even show up. He was told to not show up,
and you're still sitting. You've even played him in games,
You've started him in two games, he won a game
late in the season for you, in a year that
(59:23):
ended in the playoffs, and you're still not sure that
would concern fans. I would think we can be concerned.
It's okay to be concerned. It's part of what we do.
Part of what we do is to be concerned. But
it's also to set up contingency plans in case, Hey man,
(59:44):
we like him, we like what he's doing. But practice
is practice, games or games. So let's get to the
preseason game. So mar let me tell you how this works.
This not only works in trade lances case, but this
works for everybody. You have noticed after the first preseason game,
you ever noticed how much movement to really happens, How
all of a sudden the depth shart changes and all
that see, because what happens prior to game one is
(01:00:07):
we're hopeful and optimistic, and then the preseason game happens,
and then the coaches are like, oh no, no, no, no, no, no,
no no no no. I don't like this. I don't
like the way this looks switch it up. That's what happens.
And so all of these things, all these great plans
that we have that first preseason game never be full.
(01:00:27):
When coaches like, oh, it doesn't matter, we just want
to get a little work in. See how it is.
Whatever happens that first preseason game, we will change plans
because the panic begins to set in. So that's why
the trade last thing. I can sit here in wax
boy go like, oh, you'll be good, and to we
see that first preseason game. He throws three interceptions that
first preseason game. Jimmy jimmy warm up. But that's but
(01:00:53):
it's not his first preseason game. I guess that's my point.
He's but now he's played a lot. But but but
he's played this is here's one a regular season game
in the NFL. So I mean, like, I don't think
we're still in the space of we got to see
what happens when the lights go on with him. Are yes, yes, yes,
(01:01:19):
we really do. Yes, we still gotta see it see
because they're because here's the thing. There are four different
game speeds. There's preseason speed, where the pace and the
intensity is a little down. There's regular season speed, where
it picks up a little more. The physicality and toughness
to complexity of how people play. There's the playoffs. In
each and every round it becomes increasingly more difficult, more physical,
(01:01:41):
more violent, and then their Super Bowl intensity. But the
one thing that we have seen, we've seen Jimmy Garoppolo
playing those environments. And we saw Jimmy Garoppolo maybe four
minutes away from the San Francisco Forts, hoisting another Lombardi Trophy.
So in the back of everybody's minds cal Shanahan, the
co which is and the players they see Jimmy Garoppolo
(01:02:03):
get us to that point. Trey Lance were hopeful, We
think he can, but until we see it, we don't know.
And so that's why you have shanahand and those guys
hedging their bed a little bit. And so if Tray
and I'll be honest, if trade was lightened it up
and practices like maybe Pat Mahomes was lightening up during
(01:02:24):
the time in Kansas City, then it's easier to move on.
Evidently Trey hasn't done it fully. Even though I said, look,
it may be premature, he certainly hasn't done fully. Where
don't matter let him go, we're good. There's a reason
why you kind of keep hanging on to that old
thing because you're not sure that he's ready to handle it.
(01:02:45):
So it's not the injury. It's not that. Oh no,
it's not it's not. No, it can't be. It won't be,
like even though we're talking about it, it's not the injury.
Is Yeah, the injury is a fact there. It may
be eighty percent of the factor, but is like, hey,
let's maybe let's wait and see. Well, let's wait, you
(01:03:07):
see on my quarterback? Does that? That leaves only one question,
and and that is on the plate of chicken, asparagus,
the fruit cup and my deserve, what is what? What
is Jimmy Garoppolo? What is Jimmy Garoppolo? And they get
monster Belango sitting here. Let's go what's trending? Which item
(01:03:29):
on the plate is Jimmy Garoppolo? I mean, I think
he's a handsome fellow. So he's a good looking part
of the plate, Like he's all of the other stuff,
you know, you put the parsley and all the other
stuff around it. The the presentation is all nice, like
that's kind of Jimmy, that's kind of Jimmy G. Like
Jimmy G is kind of like what we do. We
(01:03:49):
put the truffle butter sometimes on the steak and sizzling
and all every wondering, like you know what, I like that?
I like it. I like it. I like that. Yeah,
I like that you went truffle but her, because that's
what people here in San Francisco always say, Well, you
could eat it. You could eat the chicken without the
truffle butter, but you could put the truffle butter on
(01:04:12):
the chicken, and the chicken will go for a ride
with the truffle butter and and so that might help
on certain bites, but it's not really the reason that
you eat the chicken. Do you understand what I'm saying.
I do understand it. But sometimes, okay, when you put
that that stuff on, there's a reason. Uh Manzo Blagos
with what is trending right now, truffle butter, chicken and
(01:04:36):
a fruit chop. Jimmy Gar is not He's not the
chicken and he's not the asparagus. He's more like the
mashed potatoes. Like in between start in the car. I mean, yeah,
not's not cars, not on a low car diet. Unless
(01:04:59):
that dire quires pizza five times a week. I'm not
on that. I am on the pizza diet all week.
So but yeah, you know, it's not the reason that
you order the chicken, but sometimes it goes, yeah you
needed alongside. Yeah, you can't just have the chicken that's poring.
You need a little bit more with that, guys. So
(01:05:21):
something trending right now is about Lebron and Westbrook. So
there's a story by Clutch sports that at Friday nights
uh Summer League game for the Lakers, Lebron has been
seen in multiple videos saying hi to a ton of people,
a ton of players, a ton of media, a ton
of people, and he has never been seen in any
video talking to Russell Westbrook. Well, somebody who is a
(01:05:42):
beat writer for the Lakers for Clutch Sports has tweeted,
by the way, if you're seeing clips of Lebron greeting
multiple Lakers and other NBA figures throughout the game tonight
and wondering where Russ video is, it did not happen.
The two sat across from the court, outside, across the
court from each other and never interacted. That can't be good.
It can't be good. So so do we need to redo?
(01:06:05):
Who's the petty king? Bucky? Like, right, a, Mark, You're
not going to be out here looking around saying that
I'm your girlfriend, but you're trying to date everybody else
and Kyrie included. So no, I'm not happy. I like
that we're not talking. He's gone. But also Westbrook, Kevin
(01:06:27):
Durant in Brooklyn, Let's rune it back, let's run it back.
I actually would not mind that, to be honest, I
would not mind. I don't know they would, of course.
I just I'm over Kevin Durant. But if he did
that with Russell Westbrook, I wouldn't mind. If he went
to Portland's, I wouldn't mind. I love I love Damian Lillard,
So I would love Damian Lillard to actually have a shot.
(01:06:49):
Dame tried. Did Dame put the I G story up
with the superimposed Portland y? Yeah? You did, right, It's true.
Now he's trying, and the Portland est Blazers agree. They
were like, thank you, here's a two year, hundred and
twenty two billion dollar contract extension. Thank you, Davien. Yeah,
so he's expected to sign that today in Las Vegas,
(01:07:09):
but some not so great news for the Blazers their
seventh overall pick Shade and Sharp has a small tear
in his left shoulder and so he's gonna be reevaluated
in ten of fourteen days. So hopefully it's nothing too
bad for Shaden Sharp, who was the blazer seventh overall
pick in this year's draft. Now, earlier, I mentioned to
you guys about the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St.
(01:07:30):
Andrew's not inviting two time Open Championship winner and Live
Golf CEO Greg Norman to the event, the hundred and
fiftieth anniversary celebration because there's a lot of drama. Well,
MasterCard has paused it's endorsement deals with Live Golf Tour
members Ian Poulter and Graham McDowell, So the drama continues
(01:07:50):
between Live Golfers p g I golfers, it continues. Poulter
had had a contract with the company since two thousand
and nine, McDowell had had a contract with Mass Your
Cards since two thousand eleven, and they have both been paused.
MasterCard has not commented, but that's the I mean, we're
not We're not surprised everybody's losing their endorsements left and
(01:08:10):
right right now in Major League Baseball, Tigers and White
Sox going out of in Chicago. It's been all Chicago
this entire time. They are blanking the Tigers six zero
only the fifth inning, while the Phillies and the Cardinals
nobody wants to score still scoreless through the sixth inning.
We'll see what happens. But that's all I got for you, guys.
(01:08:30):
Tell you what you know what. Here's the problem with
MasterCard bailing on their sponsorship of live golfers. The live
tour will just call more so, how much? How much
is MasterCard paying you? Here's eleven? Here, here's eleven for
your troubles. Get to the first tea much bigger writing stupid. Basically,
(01:08:54):
what's their business model? How is that gonna? I don't understand, Like,
I get that they've got a dough, but that sound
like they want to flush it down the toilet. What's
the business model where that makes them think this is
going to be a good investment. I don't I don't know.
I don't know Mark, but I know if I wanted
to play, I'm checking the director. Oh oh, you know
I on your phone? It comes across Oh, that check
(01:09:18):
keeps coming, he keeps coming, and well deal with it later.
I'm having a hard time keeping up my anger at
the dirty Saudi money because no one in the history
of ever has been offered a contract and said, look, boy,
this number looks great. I really appreciate you hitting my number. Um,
(01:09:38):
I think the job sounds great. I'm really really good
at it. Before I signed, could you please explain to
me where this money came to you. Has anyone done
that ever? Yea, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. What is the
political backing of the person who will be signing my check?
Could you go ahead and send that Oh all these
(01:10:00):
products that I'm buying at the grocery store, Uh, can
we check and see what pack the billionaire donated to
before I purchased this juice? I mean, like, I'm having
a hard time with that. So I'm not I'm not
down on the players. I'm just down on the fact
that that they're split. Like I don't want half the
good players on one side and half on the other.
(01:10:22):
I mean, competition makes it better. I mean, I will
say this, Why is the PGA, so man, why don't
they just play their players more? Like? What like? What
like while we up to pay up to pay and
the players won't go tour. Yeah, the PGA tour is
not innocent. They there's some things they need to do,
for sure. I think they're more innocent than the other side.
(01:10:46):
But look, look, I'm not sitting here being an advocate.
I'm just saying, you want to solve the issue, you know,
as some of my friends are, say, put them more
cheese on the burger. That for you. You probably don't
have cheese on your burger like you Yeah, probably probably burger.
I'm that sucker. Are you kidding me? The man who
(01:11:07):
sagas all the time? You're gonna have actually teas on
the burger. You can put some other condiments on there too.
What kind of you put I went out last night,
I mean, what what do you think's happening over here?
You think I'm like veganuting free? Well, I like, I mean,
I worry about you. Sometimes. You got up there, you
know Northern, don't you know? You do it differently out
(01:11:32):
there than double double with grilled onions. That's what I
did last night. Okay, So yeah, don't don't worry about that.
There's plenty of on there. Um. Yeah, Hey, speaking of
speaking speaking about investments, and I'm glad you know Monty
brought up k D and off the Russell Westbrook thing
and and Lebron. The more I think about this, like,
(01:11:54):
I'm I'm not here, Frandy Kevin Durant slander. I think
he's one of the best basketball players on the planet.
He might be one of the most unguardable forces in
the history of the game. That's all true. Um, but
there's always circumstances when it comes to deals. The guy
is about to turn thirty four years old and has
four years left. And if you look around the league,
(01:12:16):
you know, for instance, Monty brings up Portland. Yeah, that'd
be fun, Dame Lillard Hunter two k D and Dame
that'd be fun. Who exactly is that the Portland is
giving up to Brooklyn to make Brooklyn happy in this deal?
Every team they bring up, they're like, oh, he would
fit with that guy. No, no, no, that guy would
be need to be gone in order to get him.
Oh but he would fit with that guy, right, that
(01:12:37):
guy would be gone, Uh in order to get him
that I don't see the deal. Where's the deal, where
the finances fit, the assets fit? And then with what's left,
Kevin can win. And I know the answer. It's the
Warriors and and they I don't think they want. I
don't think they're interested. WHOA, So I'll say you you
(01:13:00):
don't like chicken anymore. I said it, you don't like
chicken anymore. You can be vegetarian. You can go back
to just eating. Sometimes you gotta Sometimes you gotta eat steak.
Sometimes you need turkey. You get a bring we can bring,
we can bring, we can bring Kevin back right back
into that old roll. No, no thanks, no thanks, no
(01:13:26):
for multiple reasons. The only reason that if they were
to do it, and I know that plenty of reporters
have said they're poking around and sniffing around because they
know they shouldn't wanted this year. They shouldn't have wanted
this year with a team to head. No stop, stop,
it's not even it's not even really about that. If
they do it, it's about money. Because here's here's where
(01:13:47):
even I can call out a Warrior fan. And this
might get a little intricate, but but follow me on this.
Steph and Clay have got to finish their careers in
Warrior uniforms, right, Oh, they've got to and and and
if we can with Draymond too, that'd be great. Okay,
So count that up in in let's say two years
from now, that's sixty million for Steph, it's forty million
(01:14:10):
for Clay, and it'll be close to close to thirty
million for Draymond. Okay. So there's that. Jordan Pool needs
an extension, will be a restricted free agent at the
end of next year. What's that going to cost you?
Right now, Let's be cheap and say it's only gonna
cost Oh, Andrew Wiggins is a free agent at the
(01:14:31):
end of next year, but we love what he brought
to the table. Yeah, go ahead and resign him as well.
Let's call that forty okay. And oh, by the way,
while you stunk, while your players were hurt, you just
loaded up on lottery picks who look promising in Jonathan
Comingo and Moses Moody and boy if James Wiseman ever
(01:14:51):
has good knees and those guys need rookie extensions in
about two to three years. Yes, keep the them too.
This payroll with luxury tax penalties I tied it up, Bucky,
just based on estimates, be about one point four billion
dollars per year. To put that team on the floor.
(01:15:15):
There's no way, there's no way. The owners. Their owners
won't do it. They won't do it. I've seen, I've
seen it. They got you there. I've seen four billion,
I've seen Chase Arena, and I noticed when they were
taking all those ailes, there are a lot of seats.
There are a lot of seats available when they were
taking a lot of those losses. And so I think
(01:15:37):
ownership will look around and say, I don't want to
pay this. But the alternative is, man, we sure don't
want this empty, this nice house with no furniture, So
they have to They gotta figure out a way. Okay,
more on this coming up, because they will go into
penalties not that far so could k D actually be
(01:16:01):
a parachute? Explain on that coming up next with Bucky
Brooks Mark Willard, Fox Sports Radio. Okay, it's been fun,
Mark Willard, Bucky Brooks, Fox Sports Radio. My man, love
hanging out with you. A lot of fun. It's always
a blast, no doubt, no doubt. The Dollar Shave Club
six Blade razor brings noticeably smooth shaves with six stainless
(01:16:23):
steel blades for swift hair removal and a lubricating strip.
It keeps thinking smooth. Dollar Shave Club razors are sold
at Dollar Shave Club dot com or in stores. Yeah. Like,
I know it's hard for people to believe, but the
majority of the Warrior fan base does not want a
(01:16:44):
reboot on Kevin And you were talking earlier about ideally, like, yes,
you'd love stars and you'd love winning, and ideally that
core is at least somewhat homegrown, and the Warriors don't
need to worry about that with their big three. But
it's one thing that that fans loved so much about
this particular year. Um, I mean, go all the way
(01:17:09):
down through all those names I just mentioned Andrew Wiggins
the only one who wasn't drafted, and he very much
became like uh uh, you know, the whole fan base
sort of welcomed him with open arms with what he
became this year. So you're gonna break that up to
kind of go back to where they've already been emotionally,
(01:17:30):
I think there are only a few people who would
dig it, but it could represent a financial way out
for ownership that's looking at this group of players that
their fan base thinks they're gonna keep them all and
I mean, it's just literally not possible. M It's not possible.
So you gotta make hard decisions right now. And what
(01:17:51):
you have to be able to do is you have
to kind of figure out who is going to project
to be a really good player, Who can we get
along with. We saw that with GP this second they
moved on without him. Who are the essentials? And then
are they eventually going to have to make a hard
decision on one of your core players. Are you that
committed to making sure that Clay, Draymond, and Steph finish
(01:18:14):
their careers wearing those uniforms, or are you going to
look at the bottom line and say these are depreciation
depreciating assets. Can we get rid of one of these
guys and keep some of the younger guys? It goes, yeah,
it goes in order. I mean Staff, it'so yes, like
that's gonna be a massive thing. They must, they must
(01:18:36):
make him a career warrior. H Clay would be next.
I think the fan base certainly hopes for it, and
that would be really, really difficult. Draymond is the one
I think that you could you could get by the
fan goalie on that one. You could at some point,
God is tough man. Draymond is sist hard and so
I get it, y'all Like Clay though, y'all like Clay
on the ship, on the boat, kind of going through
(01:18:58):
the thing doing this stuff. He's got his d right
doing all this stuff. I get it. Everybody, everybody to
his dogs name is Rocko. You gotta take the emotion
out of it, though, And they have to figure out
because one of those guys may have to go. Um
Bucky Brooks my man. Tons of fun, looking forward to
(01:19:18):
doing it again soon. Steve Hartman and Jeff Schwartz are next.
