The Ruger Light RAG Security three eightyis easy to shoot and easy to wreck,

Welcome to everyone. This is gunTalk. I'm Tom Gresham and we'll take
(00:22):
your calls talking about well, somememories of shooting with your dad, guns
that were owned by your dad, maybe you ended up with those yourself,
the legacy, the history of firearmsin your family. Those are good stuff.
That's the good stories we need totell, and we need to pass
those down with the guns as theypass along. And it could be,
(00:43):
of course a gun that your motherowned as well. One of my favorites
is the two fifty seven Roberts thatbelong to my mother. Customate bulltax There's
some really cool guns out there.Hey, welcome. If you'd like to
join us, the numbers just ifyou what forget the number, call me
at Tom Talk gun pretty easy there. If you want to know some of
(01:03):
the other things we do, checkus out over on Twitter now known as
x I Am at gun Talk.Of course, just look up gun talk
media everywhere from Facebook to Instagram toYouTube to everywhere else you'll see the actually
thousands of videos we have made. And in fact, just a little bit,
I want to talk about something thathappened this past week during a filming
(01:26):
session we were doing down in Louisianafor the First Person Defender show. You
know, that's the force on forcewhere people get attacked and how sometimes it
becomes a bit too real. I'lltell you a little bit about that in
a bit, but first I wantto talk to one of my favorite gun
pushers, Alan Partner joins us fromGunbroker, the website created by eBay when
(01:48):
they stopped allowing people to sell guns, and here comes gun Broker Alan.
How are you, my friend Tom? I am doing great, Happy Father's
Day. Thanks for having us fun. Absolutely of course for the If there
is anyone it doesn't seem possible,it doesn't know what gun broke he is.
It's an online place where people cango buy guns. Obviously they still
(02:08):
have to apply all the legal ramifications, the rules. You know, a
gun gets shipped to a gun dealer, do the federal background check if it's
required, all the rest of that. It's simply a we of finding guns
and you can post guns for sale, and it's an auction system for the
most part, and it's just becomehuge. Yeah, we're still pretty heavily
(02:31):
influenced by the auction side, butyou know we're getting more Amazon like all
the time. We've got buy itnow so you don't have to place your
bid and cross your fingers and waita week. You know, we've got
cards now that you can buy fouror five six items from four or five
different retailers but only have to checkout one time and worry about your information
one time. So, yeah, you bade Amazon. We're we're kind of
(02:52):
kind of making that evolution all Sowhat you're saying is now when I want
something, I can just what Iwant, what I want when I want
it. Yeah, pretty much, pretty much. Yeah, I mean listen
to the penny. Auctions are arestill fun ways to play and find deals,
but by it now is super convenient. You know, you get it,
(03:13):
and I mean the shipping these daysis pretty lighting fast for most of
our sellers, so it's just crazyconvenient. That's it works for me because
I don't have a lot of patience, so that works. But now you've
got something new going. I'm lookingat this crazy website for collectors Elite Auctions.
These are some of the most gorgeousguns I have seen a long time.
(03:34):
Tell us about this, well, thanks Tom. Yeah, we we
know. Every day I take alook at a report of that shows the
ten or twelve most expensive things boughtthe day before. So, you know,
I'm always looking for an interesting storyto share with folks, something cool.
You know, We've had everything fromM seventy eight flame throwers to original
potato digger machine, I mean, cool stuff on here. And we realized
(03:54):
that, you know, we've gota pretty fair selection of high end lux
we've bespoke one off historic pieces. We should probably make that easier for that
community to find. So we launchedCollectors Lead Auctions about a month ago,
focusing on you know, higher endproducts, luxury guns, collectibles really for
(04:15):
you know, kind of that discerningcollector that's got their little niche. So
we kind of curate curate the collectionevery month, put in some of the
finest stuff we've got available. We'reworking with some of the best sellers in
that space, so you know, they're taking care of provenance and vetting these
products out. We spend a coupleof weeks in previews so everyone can can
take a look, do their research, get excited, and then two weeks
(04:38):
of auction bidding, everything's going toclose. Our first collection closes this Thursday
evening, and we're really excited. We've got some cool pieces in here and
can't wait to see what happens.Well. Any by listening live can follow
along with us. Right now atCollector's Elite Auctions. I'm looking right here
just to give you an idea ofwhat we're talking about. I'm looking at
two ads or two guns right nextto each other, and this is kind
(04:59):
of a great example. You've gotone that's a Novesky N nine, Anastacado
twenty eleven pistol rifle combo tactical witha helmet with everything starting bid twenty five
grand, and right next to itis exhibition grade Winchester Model twenty one twenty
gate side by side starting at twentyone thousand, and then right next to
(05:21):
that as a really rare Smith andWesson sixteen dash to double stamp thirty two
S and W long. If you'rea collector, you know what all that
stuff means. Characters kind of givespeople an idea all of the width,
the breadth the depth of what you'retalking about here. And you know,
we've got certainly some of the greatcollectful pieces from Smith's and Parazzi and you
(05:44):
know a number of those brands, but we've got some kind of interesting things
too. If you kind of godown a couple of Morlros, you'll see
the first ever production Walter P ninetynine, serial number double O one,
double O one, first production oneof that whole one. This is the
head of the river, the block. All of the chips have fallen off
on over the last you know, twenty plus years of P ninety nine production,
(06:05):
right, I mean this is numberone. Yes. We had a
friend of mine runs the Commando Bondsocial channels and of course that means being
a huge Walter officionado. It's allabout, you know, the Bond lifestyle.
And I brought him in to doa little bit of a history article
on this, which, by theway, we've got articles on a number
of the pieces out here on thepage. Click the articles tab you can
(06:27):
find four or five. We breakhim down a little bit more, give
you a little more information on him. But he took a look at some
of the photos from the seller onthis and he was lost for words.
He's like, I've never seen thiscombination. It's the European style sites,
it's and he listened, I loveWalters, but I was lost fifteen seconds
into that conversation as he's going downthe roll Mark Road and everything else.
(06:49):
So what I can say is it'sa really cool piece. Well, you
know, and I look, Iunderstand people are going to twenty one twenty
one thousand, Yeah, but I'mlooking at one here that's starting at fifteen
hundred dollars. So you can findcool stuff and not have to mortgage the
house if you don't want to.Yeah, exactly, exactly, you know.
(07:10):
And I mean we've got there's certainthings that certain more collectors will pick
up on. We've got a aColt single action Army from nineteen seventy one.
But the important thing is that itwas engraved by Bill Mainz, which
if you're into engraved colts, youknow, you know what that name means.
That's that's definitely fitting the bill ofa collectible. We've got half a
dozen name engravers products and here throughoutthe back half of the twentieth century,
(07:33):
and again got an article breaking thosedown. If you want to learn a
little bit more. But if you'reinto you know, one officer or specialty
bespokes, you know, great placeto be. It's interesting. I always
find interesting, at least that thereare people who are not just colt collectors,
but they're like snake gun collectors. And then there are people who are
(07:57):
just Browning Belgium superposed collectors or Rugernumber one collectors. You often don't see
people who collect all the way acrossthe board. No, they really do
well one. It's such a whitebreadth it's almost impossible to just financially.
But that's true. Also, youknow, if you have a collection of
five hundred collectible guns, you know, you kind of get to questioning how
(08:22):
how collectible is this? If I'vegot that big of a thing where you
know, if you've got the thirtyfive variations they did on this particular model
and you've got all thirty five, you know, now you're into something.
So I mean, I listen,I level battle rifle. So we've got
a nineteen oh three sniper in hereand an A force sniper in here that
I mean, I'm not quite readyto mortgage the house that's at their cost,
(08:43):
but I'd try to be in alittle bit of trouble if I placed
a bid. But you know,Thursday hasn't come yet, so we'll see
what happens. Well, you gotto be careful because you know the old
deal, you know, if youplace that bid just because oh I'd just
like to play with this. Ihave done that and ended up with the
gun. Now I'd ended up notbeing supreme. I wasn't sorry, but
I was sure surprised. Ask mesometime how I got to own an eight
(09:05):
and three Cory inch Model twenty nineSmith and Wessons very similar story. Yeah,
yeah, you think, oh,this will be fun. I'll just
throw a stupid bit in here, you know, and everybody's going to come
in top that, right. Yeah. We had one of our experts on
talking about, you know, thebest way to find values on gun broker,
and I'm like, I can't tellpeople this unless I find out if
(09:28):
he's right, and you know,so to your point, kind of a
little bit throwing on what the heck, you know, worst case scenario I
went at Haha, Oh I wantedokay, great deal, not complaining,
very happy, but yeah, that'sexactly how it happens. What do they
say you can't win if you don'tplay exactly exactly. And hey, our
odds are way better than any lotteryout there, so oh isn't that's the
(09:48):
truth? All right? So waitis Collector's Elite Auctions and that's the website
collectors Elite Auctions dot com. Andactually, if you go to Gunbroker,
it pops up on the first pagethere, so you can do get the
glink there and and drive right in, you know. And honestly, folks,
I would just tell them even ifyou're thinking, yeah, I'm not
gonna buy one of those, itdoesn't really matter. Just go spend some
time looking at these because the picturesare gorgeous and the guns are breathtaking.
(10:13):
Yeah. That's really been the funpart of launching this project, of seeing
the initial wave of entrance communication. You know how it is when you start
anything, you're kind of worried thatare we gonna have anything? We're gonna
have, you know, a collectionof four items, and then all of
a sudden, the floodgates open andit's just it's like Christmas morning, you
know. You start opening files andit's just beautiful, engraved, beautiful,
bluing, beautiful wood, beautiful stainlessand ivory, and it's been a fun
(10:35):
project and you know, I can'twait till you. Like I said,
this first collection, the auctions willclose this Thursday, the twentieth of the
evening. You'll see the next collectionpop up, I believe the following week.
So you get a two week previewand we're just gonna keep going on
two week cycles throughout. So allright, and I got about them in
the left. Let me let melet me ask you this. If somebody
says, yeah, I've got agun that probably would fit into this,
(10:56):
do they submit that as being forsale through through Collectors Elite Auctions or they
do it through gun Broker and thenyour team goes in and selects them.
So everything's driven to the gun brokerengine. So the posting from a seller
perspective is going to look just likeyou're posting a regular gun. There's going
to be some new options in therewhere you can basically put a flag on
(11:16):
it and wave us go hey,I think this is Collector's Elite worthy.
And you could always reach out toour seller assist teams to the website and
say hey, I've got an itemthat I think is great for Collectors Elite,
let's talk and they'll be right backin touch with you. So there's
a couple of easy ways to doit, but end of the day,
it's not that much more difficult.I think it's one checkbox more difficult than
just lifting like normal, and gunBroker made it easy. Okay, Alan,
(11:39):

(14:30):
We are celebrating two court decisions fromlast week. The Court struck down the
ATF's ban on pistol races and struckdown the ban on bump stocks. We'll
see what develops on those. Bothof them, Neither one was on second
ammogrounds. Both were on the groundsthat the ATF simply did not have the
authority to pass those rules, topass those bands, to put in rules
(14:56):
that could send you to prison forthe rest of your life in some cases
when no one ever voted for thoseit's Congress's job. And I try to
explain this to people over on Twitter, and I say, look, it's
really simple. All the Supreme Courtsaid was, if you want it to
be a law, you have topass a law. You can't expect the
(15:18):
agency to do it for you.Of Course, I add, well,
that is the cowards way out becausewe don't actually want to force a vote
on this because we know we'll lose. So I mean, but look,
the Left does this all the time. They've done it for years. I
mean, you could even argue thatRoe v. Wade was the same kind
of thing, wanting the Supreme Courtto do what they couldn't get done in
(15:41):
Congress. And Supreme Court eventually cameback and said, look, this is
simple. The Supreme Court does notmake up laws. If you want it
to be a law, go toCongress and pass the law. That's the
way to get this stuff done. It's a new day out there when you're
actually forcing people to go pay attentionto and honor the US Constitution, and
I, for one am celebrating it. Let's go talk to Charles out of
(16:04):
Finley, Ohio. Charles, thankyou for your patience. What's on your
mind? Sir? Hey Tom,thanks for having me. I we been
meaning to call for a couple ofmonths and I hadn't got around to it.
I listened almost exclusively on the podcastrather than live. But I looked
down at the clock and thought,oh man, I'm gonna call. So
the reason for the call was oftwo things to kind of go hand in
(16:27):
hand. I went to one ofmy local mom in top shops and she
filled out the all the suppressor informationfor me. And I don't know if
that was kind of nice. Idon't know if they all all the local
ones do that or not, butshe did made it real easy on me,
and ironically on that as I've beengoing to this shop for a couple
(16:48):
of years, and I keep goingto the guys, you know, talking
to the guys, talking to theguys, and I and they were busy.
One day, one was out,one was any and he was busy,
So I all right, I'll gotalk to her. She knew more
about guns than they did. Thatyou weren't. You weren't, by any
chance going to our favorite gun store, Cleveland's Outdoor World, were you?
No? No, it's about aboutan hour south of there, actually because
(17:12):
I lived on now. But Igot to tell you, the shell's over
the corner, just laughing. Yeah, go talk to the woman at the
gun store. She probably knows morethan a lot of those other dudes there.
Yeah, here, go ahead,Charles. All the time I thought
she was just the cash register Icandy quote unquote, but nope, she
knew more than they did. Ithink that's for sure. That's what eye
(17:34):
candy right there. I've been waitingfor for a couple of months for the
disability to come back. But thereason why I'm probably holding up the line
for everybody. When I was eighteen, I got a felony, was breaking
an entry felony. And when Iwas nineteen, I got two misdemeanors,
so that canceled out my ability toown a firearm until I heard you mentioned
(17:59):
the felony, you know, afew months or so ago. You know
about that avoiding out You're right,So I went back to court and got
my relief of disability back. Andthe relief of disability restores the applicants to
all civil rights to the full extentenjoyed by any citizen. So I have
(18:22):
my complete for a few years now, now, you know, there was
I was eighteen nineteen when I didthis. I'm fifty two now, so
there's a huge gap of not committingany crimes, you know. Since then.
I went back, got my BAin theology and went back and I
became an X ray attach. Ijoined the local fire department for a few
years. So there was some somethings on my part that I did,
(18:44):
you know, to now, Ididn't do it to make myself look better.
I did it because I wanted togrow up a little bit instead of
being the piece of craft in myteens. And you know, the judge,
you know, he looked at allthat and he says, I don't
see why not, And to me, I told him, I just I
felt like it was my next stepin becoming whole again, you know,
(19:06):
like a whole citizen, instead ofsomething that I can't do because of mistakes
that I made my life. Theuh, you know, but that was
I'll tell you when it was thatI got my relief of disability. And
the reason why is because I thoughtHillary was going to win. So that's
when I went and got my firsthand gun. Well let me just say
this. Let met me. Igot a thought or two on this.
(19:27):
Yeah, when you're eighteen and nineteen, most of us are a lot of
us are knuckleheads, and sometimes youjust do stupid stuff. Then you go
live a good life and there's noand that's what I've always said, there's
no reason that you should have alifetime ban on owning a gun because of
something you did decades ago. Ithink we're going to see a court decision
(19:48):
very very soon. It says exactlythe same thing that if it was a
non violent felony conviction or misdemeanor, you do not lose your gun rights,
and and I think we're going tobe seeing that. But I just got
to tell you, congratulations on that. I mean, that is a terrific
thing. Charles, Thank you forpassing that story along. I appreciate the
call. It's kind of a headsup to anybody who might be in that
(20:12):
similar situation. You could go tacklethis, and like I say, this
may end up getting taken care ofin the courts anyway, but the relief
of disability is something I gotta tellyou. I've not actually not heard that
particular phrase before and didn't know thatthat would do that. That is pretty
(20:33):
terrific. But you know, hewent in and turned his life around and
became a good citizen, and that'sthe kind of people you want out there.
So I've always thought it was punitive, strange, and very much plays
into the hands of the gun banners. And unfortunately a lot of people on
(20:55):
the gun owning side said, yeah, al he's a convictive fellow and shouldn't
have a gun. Really, really, somebody did a b and e forty
years ago, or somebody did taxevasion forty years ago, didn't hurt anybody.
Why should that carry a life sentencethat you cannot exercise your constitutional right.
(21:18):
I don't see it, never haveseen. I've never you know.
And people say, oh, yeah, you got to support this. No
I don't, No, I don't. I also very much oppose additional penalties
on a crime for the use ofa gun. You say, yeah,
you know it's a break in anybut if you use a gun you get
an extra five or ten years. Why why would we do that? Are
(21:41):
we all going to say, yes, guns are so horrible that if you
use a gun in a crime,it's much worse. Do you realize that
you're simply parodying what gun banners say. If you support additional penalties for the
use of a gun and a crime, you are, in fact a gun
(22:02):
batter. You are playing into theirhands. You're saying guns are horrible.
Anybody uses that deserves additional penalties.I rejected completely. Hey just a minute,
I'll tell you my father's day gunstory. Actually got two or three
(22:23):
of them. As you might imagineI did not grow up like other people.
I really didn't. I didn't knowit at the time. My dad
was a gun writer, was abit of a celebrity in the gun world.
We had a constant stream of gunscoming to our house all the time,
all the time. I mean hundreds, literally hundreds of guns. I
(22:44):
got to shoot everything. Anything thatcame in. Anything it was made in
the sixties and seventies, I gotto shoot it. New calibers, new
cartridges, new shotguns, rifles, handguns, I got to shoot them all.
It was crazy. It was agreat time, but it wasn't and
I get it now, it wasn'thow other people grow up. So but
(23:07):
there were some times. I'll tellyou a minute about maybe where safety training
went a little bit sideways, alittle bit of a surprise. We'll get
to that in just a second.First, I want to talk to Bob.
He's out of New York online one. Hey, Bob, talk to
me about shotguns and home defense.Okay. I was a firearms instructor in
(23:30):
the State Police for about ten fifteenyears, taught to the academy. When
I went through my training for beit instructor, we all had to do
at the end of the course atleast a twenty minute presentation on some aspect
of the shooting. Well. Iwanted to the academy or library. At
(23:55):
the academy, I found this bookon police use of farms and shootouts,
and the rural story was it.When I got through it was that a
large percentage of time, when you'refacing an adversary, he's got a handgun,
(24:15):
You got a handgun. He knowsthat maybe or maybe you know what
you're doing with it. When he'sstaring down a muzzle at that shotgun pointing
at him, A vast majority ofthe time there was no shootout. It
(24:36):
just ended it right there. Nobodythey know that. You don't have to
be good with that. All youhad to do is make it go bang,
and he's in big trouble. Now. There's so much discussion on your
show. I've heard so many timesabout a home defense weapon. I am
a firm believer that, and I'vehad widows friends of mine they wanted to
(25:03):
get a weapon, and I talkedthem into a shotgun. It's easy to
train them, it's easy to use, and they don't have to be good
with it. And that bad guylooking down at barrel. The more you
look at, the bigger it gets. It's an interesting take and I appreciate
the info. A couple of reactionsto it is, yes, I think
(25:25):
the shotgun can be incredibly intimidating.I mean Bill Jordan, who wrote the
book No Second Place Winner, wasan incredible master with revolvers, deadly fast,
crazy, accurate. But he saidin a confrontation he's border patrolman.
He would always take a shotgun overthe handgun every time. And yeah,
any time you don't have to shootsomebody, that's a good thing. And
(25:48):
if they look at a shotgun andgo I give up, that's fine.
I do want to weigh in onone thing that Bob said. Thank you
for the call, Bob. Theidea that you don't have to be good
with it. I think that comesfrom a real old misconception that shotguns shoot
really wide patterns and you just generallypoint it somewhere in the general direction.
(26:10):
That's not true. Can I suggestthat you take your home defense shotgun out
to the rank and you got togo to a range where you have the
ability to do this and shoot apaper target at three feet three feet one
yard from the muzzle. Look howsmall the hole is. It's going to
be three inches across maybe, andthen back up to five feet and seven
(26:32):
feet and ten feet and fifteen feet. Even at fifteen feet you're probably going
to have a pattern ballpark. I'mnot talking fifteen yards, I'm talking fifteen
feet ballpark. Like a dinner plate, you have to aim, you have
to hit. It is unbelievably easyto miss with a shotgun if you're not
(26:56):
paying attention. Ask anybody who shotthree gun competitions. You can miss with
a shotgun really easily. And that'swhy I'm a big fan of sights on
the home defense gun and a shotgun, and even better, I think a
red dot site on your home defenseshotgun because it forces you to put the
dot where you want that shot loadto go. So but yes, a
(27:19):
shotgun could be incredibly intimidating. Ialways remember what ed Head used to say.
He was a poor Patroman and thenhe was a gun site instructor there
for many years rangemaster. He said, you know, you shoot people with
rifles and handguns, you disassemble themwith a shotgun. It's a pretty good
way to put that. Hey,let's grab Steve and Fargo North Dakota.
(27:41):
Steve, talk to me about Dad'sin Father's Day. Hey Tom, we
had a great time. I've gottwo sons once nine ones fourteen. We
just went out for a little range. We got a little range at our
cabin, shooting kind of a hodgepodgeof guns. The nine year old got
to shoot a pistol. Probably thesecond or third time, we busted out
the Ruger twenty two magnum single action. I don't even know the model,
(28:06):
but really I've got a big rubbergrip on it so you can hold it
real well. And I'm not goingto lie to you. The accuracy was
not stellar, not the gun,the operator, but he managed to.
We went old school with out,you know, expired carbonated beverages, shook
up and put those ont of theThe interactive is great, that is that's
(28:32):
probably the Ruger single six that that'sa great single action. So what other
guns did you have out there withthem? We had a Browning BPS twenty
eight gage micro pump and we're handthrowing some clays and then my fourteen year
old wanted to get in on thecarbonated beverage thing, so he threw you
know what, shooken up basically plasticpop bottle in the air and he shot
(28:56):
that with the twenty eight gage.It worked, but it's not nearly as
dramatic as the pistol round going throughit, you know, because kind of
just leaks out because it can runit. And then you were talking about
about home defense. We had thehome defense. It's a shotgun out and
I shot that. It's a BanelliM three and at the M three there's
(29:18):
no choke, cylinder choke. It'sa inertial loader with with pump backup,
so there's a lever to throw. It's actually a military gun to sign designed
to shoot non lethal like beam bagsand stuff. Cycle it and it's really
good to run. It's really goodto run that gun because it does run
a little differently. You got tomake sure that, you know, if
(29:40):
it's in semiotic automode or pump modeand it has ghost ring sights on it,
you know, so there's a fullsight. So I shot a couple

Com Silence delivered how as you canimagine, I grew up around guns,
(32:55):
lots of guns, and had interestingshooting experience, and Dad builled us on
gun safety all the time. Thatwas just a regular deal. And I
can even remember a few of thequestions, like, Okay, which is
more deadly a shotgun or a rifle? I don't know. That's probably nine
or ten at the time. AndI thought about it a little bit and
(33:17):
said, well, neither one, because both of them will kill you dead,
and there's nothing deader than dead.He goes, yes, that's exactly
correct. Don't start to think aboutone guns less deadly or less dangerous potentially
than other guns. And we woulddo this and we would practice safety,
gun safety and gun handling and allthe rest of it. And then and
(33:42):
obviously, you know, never pointa gun in anything you're not willing to
destroy. And then Dad went overto England and went to the Holland Holland
Shooting School and he had a sessionwith Rex Gauge, their lead instructor,
and also had a gun fitting session. And when you have your shotgun fit
to you, you do all thesedifferent things. And he came home and
was showing me how that happens, and basically how to check for eye dominance
(34:06):
and how to find out if theshotgun fits you well as part of the
process. And I've come to learnif this is perfectly acceptable and they do
it, and I've done it nowwith gun fitting, but I was I
don't know number twelve at the time. And you have the person who's being
fitted with an unloaded gun, mountthe gun and point it right at you
across the room, right at youreye, so you, the gun fitter,
(34:30):
could look down the barrel, rightover the top of the barrel actually,
and see where the eye is andsee if the gun is lined up
correctly and see if it fits well. I had been drilled so often on
gun safety, and he is soproud. He wants to show me the
things he's learned at the Hall andHolland gun school. And he showed me
(34:51):
about gun fitting, and he hasme hold of the shotgun and he gets
cross from He says, now justraise u up the point in my eye.
And I said no, because Ihe's doing another one of those tests,
right, the gun safety tests. He says, no, no,
it's okay you. I absolutely refused. I would not do it. I
figured for sure he was trying totrick me into doing something that's dangerous and
(35:12):
I was going to get in troublefor it, and so I would not
play the game, but I wouldn'tdo the English style gun fitting thing.
Now later on, of course,I did, not only that, but
we have videos of it on ourwebsite of me going up to Brian Bolenski
at Field Sport in Traverse City,Michigan, one of the finest shotgun instructors
of the country. If you everget up there and did the whole gun
fitting thing, and that is partof the process. But it was just
(35:35):
kind of interesting. It's like hecame back and wanted to show me this
thing and went, no, I'mnot going to point a gun at you,
dad, So there you go.Let's just grab Bruce out of Batesfield,
Arkansas on four Bruce. I gota couple of minutes for you launch
into it. Please. Hey,I was just going to give you a
little father son deal. When Iwas about six or seven, I was
(35:58):
at a fish fright my grandfather andsomehow found out he had a little four
ten and begged my dad to takeme rabbit hunting. And his extent of
rabbit hunting was walking down the gravelroad and I couldn't didn't find any rabbits.
But I talked him into letting meshoot an old drum at the edge
of the woodline. And that wasthe first time I ever shot a little
(36:19):
four tenth any gun at all,and it was a little four ten.
And now that four ten is inmy son's hands, waiting for our six
year old grandson to get it,so it'll be through five generations once he
gets to use it. I wantyou to do something, if you would,
Bruce, Okay, you got aphone with a camera in it,
a video, sit down and recorda video of you telling a bunch of
(36:44):
different stories about that gun and youused it, and your dad used it,
and all the members of the family, and any kind of stories you
can dream up and do it nicevideo on it and send it to your
son so that the next person inyour family who gets the gun can have
all the stories, because that's whatit's really all about. That's true.
(37:05):
I've heard you mentioned that before. That's true, you know, And now
it's so easy. It used tobe you had to go find a video
camera and all that. Now youcarry that video camera around in your pocket
and just settle down somewhere with acup of coffee or a glass of brown
liquid and start telling the stories. And it will mean so much to everybody
that you took the time to dothat. Well, I'm right, hey,
(37:27):
I got one more story. IfI can tell you about a recent
purchase, all right, go forit, be quick. I'm into World
War two stuff world War One.So I've never had any use for a
thirty thirty. I've never shot one. I'm sixty six years old. I
never owned a lever action until recently. And a friend called and he said
he had a Winchester ninety four i'dbe interested in. And I kind of
(37:49):
argued with him, and he said, well, you need to look at
it first. It's got US propertystamps on it. And long story short,
the US Army in World War Onenineteen seventy bought fifteen hundred Winchester ninety
four's and used them to protect thespruce tree industry out west, to protect
the timber used to make the planesin the armaments for World War One.
(38:13):
And it's designated, it's called itsnickname is a spruce gun, and it's
a Winchester ninety four thirty thirty withUS property stamps. Well, that is
a great story. I have neverheard of the spruce gun. That is
terrific. Well, thank you forsharing that. That's you know, once
again, here we go. Hey, thanks for the call. Once again.
(38:34):
It's like, okay, there areso many different areas that you can
get into with gun collecting. Yougo, well, there's a story I
never even heard. I mean,it's baking of protecting trees. We had
a bear in my backyard a coupleof nights ago. He got into the
trash can, got in a mess. It's like, I don't really sell
a gun. I had to goclean all that ups. Like, okay,
I don't know if that was Yogilooking for boo boo or what it
(38:57):
was. But now, yes,I'm going to care every time I step
out the door. All right,I couldn't here eight six' six talk
gun will get you in. Justthink about my dad. My dad was
a natural athlete. Three letter sport, free sport letter guy, didn't really
(39:22):
matter what it was, ping pong, pool, archery. He could just
pick up anything to do it.Baseball, Yeah, he was signed by
the Chicago Cubs coming out of WorldWar Two, so yeah, he could
do it all, but man, when it came to shotguns, holy caw
could he shoot and never practice.I mean he would go years without shooting
(39:47):
a clay target and then go outand beat the best people at the local
clubs. Easy, just smoke them. I remember one time we were hunting
ducks near Texas Kanda, and hewas a blind with our friend Ray Elgin,
and I was in a blind,oh one hundred yards from them,
(40:07):
and I could see clearly they hadfour ducks. They called in four mallards.
Now, Ray understand it probably shotat that time well over a million
registered trap targets. One of thefinest trapshooters in the country, and Dad
never shot these four ducks. Comeover, and I'd learned later they said,
(40:30):
all right, you know, youtake the one on the right,
I'll take the one on the left, you know, or they've started like
opposite ends. But it was interestingbecause it pointed out that there is a
proper, imperfect time to fire ashot at a bird that's coming by.
And it sounded like two shots. It was like bang, bang, and
(40:51):
four birds fell. They had bothshot at exactly the same time, and
then they both shot at exactly thesame time and four mallards for falling at
the same time with the feet pointat the sky. Went Yep, that's
what a really good shooter can do. It was it was impressive to see.
I did not get that ability.I have to work at it,
(41:12):
and I'm an average wing shot.I'm probably a little bit above average on
handguns and rifles, mostly because Ido that more. But when it comes
to wing shooting, that's a wholedifferent deal. That's where that baseball background
of being able to see things andhit things. So it was a fun
way to grow up, as Isay it, learned a lot and got
(41:36):
to do a lot of stuff withmy dad. I was fortunate. He
once pulled me out of school whenI was in I guess middle school.
We called it junior high there andI got the call on the intercomm I
was in class and principal comes onand says, miss Brown, please send
Tom Gresham to the principal's office andhave him bring his books. And think
of that's not good because when youbring your I means you're not coming back
(42:00):
to class, right. So Iget over to the principal's office and say,
you know, yes, sir,he says, your dad just called,
there's a new flight of ducks justgot in at the lake. He'll
be here in ten minutes to pickyou up. Dad trove over, picked
me up, took me out ofschool to go to the lake to hunt
(42:21):
ducks because we got a fresh flightof ducks coming in. So that was
the interesting and fascinating way I grewup. But you know, in the
end, it was still safe gunhandling, going out and having fun.
I could bring my friends with me, usually one at a time, and
my brother and I was shoot togetherDad. I was fortunate that he recognized
(42:44):
my left eye dominance very early on. I'm very right handed, but very
strong left eye dominant, and evenas a kid, he switched me over.
He says, I don't want tosee you putting any long gun to
your right shoulder anymore, and talkingabout BB guns, toy guns, whatever,
they were all going to go tothe left shoulder. And so I've
shot shotguns and rifles left handed eversince. And thank goodness that he recognized
(43:04):
that. It's a really good ideaif you're teaching somebody to check for I
dominance first thing, to find outwhat they should be doing. So I
was fortunate that way. It wasa fun way to grow up, and
then I ended up joining him, working with him on ESPN, doing TV
shows together, writing together. Weboth wrote columns for sports Field Magazine,
so it was fun grits my dad, Thank you for what you passed along
(43:28):
to me, and I'm doing mybest to hand it down to my kids
and grandkids. Our numbers eighty sixsix, Talk gun. We'd love to
hear your father's day story. Giveyou a shot.
