Football Friday is on with Chuck and Bud on Sports
Radio ninety three point three kJ R FM.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Hey, good morning and Merry Christmas. Welcome into the radio show.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
My name is Chuck pow Ashley Ryan is here.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
We hope you had a great holiday as we get
together on this Friday. As a matter of fact, I'll
be honest, right off the bat felt so much like
a Monday that I didn't even realize it was ball
Friday until I heard that sounder.
Speaker 4 (01:01):
Okay, now look at you.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Actually I did know because I tweeted you yesterday the
plan for today. But as I'm sitting here preparing for
the show, it felt so much like a Monday, I
forgot that it was football.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Friday, but also like the best gift you've ever been given,
because it's a Monday that's a Friday. Yeah, a Friday
that feels like a Monday, but it's still a Friday,
so tomorrow will still be Saturday.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Yeah, exactly, and then I don't know what Monday is
going to feel like, probably Tuesday evening zen Zerday.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
But nonetheless, good to have you with us.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Welcome into this live radio program here at Sports Radio
ninety three point three KJRFM. No Bucky Jacobson here today,
it's Ashley and I taking you all the way till
ten o'clock this morning on a football Friday.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
How was your holiday?
Speaker 4 (01:49):
That was good? Yeah, it's weird. It did. It felt
like Christmas, but it didn't feel like Christmas. Does that
make sense?
Speaker 2 (01:55):
No, you'll have to explain that. I think.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
I don't know if I can. It was very weird,
Like the whole well we last week. I kept thinking, Oh,
it's so strange that it's Christmas on Thursday. Oh and
then you know, we had Wednesday and Thursday off, and
on Wednesday I was like, oh, it's Christmas Eve. That's weird.
It doesn't feel like it's Christmas Eve. And then I
think because this year we did some things different than
we've done in the past, and so maybe it just
(02:17):
didn't feel the same. Okay, And you know, whenever something
is new, you just it takes a little while to
get used, okay, okay, And but we just did a
quiet Christmas Eve dinner with five Iron, Palmer the Great,
my mom and I. Yeah, and then we went to
my mom's yesterday and hung out all day and had
lots of snacks and good food and some drinks and
(02:38):
open presents and watched football. It was great. Okay, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
It was pretty good.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
I mean, yeah, I don't know if it's your traditional Christmas.
I didn't do any traveling to be with family and.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
And so, and then even like the.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
It was strange because I felt like there was this
complete commitment to eating and drinking in short spurts, and
then like for the rest of the day didn't feel
like eating another thing. Right, We just dedicated ourselves to snacks.
And then we did Martiniz on Christmas Eve, and that
(03:19):
actually felt more like Christmas or Christmas Eve that we
did together, but went so far in on that that
I'm like, did I even eat dinner, which looking back
on it, I didn't.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
And then the next day she made.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Her world famous lasagna, and so we did that and
I ate so much of it in one setting, and
I didn't feel like.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Eating again the rest of the day. So yeah, we
just it was just kind.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Of like all in in short spurts, and then the
rest of the time. I'm like, man, when you don't
have to work, these days really are longer.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
Yeah, like what should I do with my time?
Speaker 3 (03:59):
I've already Yeah, when you actually get to sleep and stuff, man,
these days seem longer.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
But no, it was good. It was good, and you
know you can't help. But whatever you're doing in the moment,
you miss those you're not doing it with, so you
can't help that, and so you make your phone calls
and it's not the same and you almost feel like
you're apologizing for not being there. So maybe I just
carry that, I don't know, the guilt of a child
(04:32):
that moved away from home at eighteen and lived on
the other coast. You know, maybe I carry that, and
maybe a lot of people can relate to that. But
it was good, and yet you still feel like, man,
we could.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Have done more.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Yeah, maybe we should have gone, maybe we should have
done our widby trip for the Christmas, or maybe we
should have got completely out of town.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
But I didn't want to travel during the holidays.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
So good, but you can't help, but you know, second
guess whether you should have done something different.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
Yeah, no, I understand that, And I think that's a
normal adult thing. And by that I mean guilt, Like
we find ways to just make ourselves feel guilty of
all sorts of things that somebody else isn't ever thinking like, well,
that jerk, you should have been here. Yeah, but you're like, oh,
I'm such a jerk. I should have been there.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
And then but then I start thinking about, like, man,
the last time the whole family.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Got together, it was a disaster.
Speaker 4 (05:27):
So maybe so maybe I dodged something.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Yeah, maybe exactly. But anyway, I hope everybody out there
at a great holiday.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
And of course we got New Year's right around the
corner as well, so next week will be a little
goofy around.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Here as well.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
But we've gathered for this football Friday because certainly we
got some big things going on in the National Football League.
Also some college football news this morning that I woke
up to we'll share with.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
You here in a little bit. But you know, when
you got a division championship on the line over the.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Next two weeks, certainly you know you gather on a
Friday on a football Friday to discuss things with your experts.
So we'll map out the show for you coming up
here in a moment with what's on tap. But of course,
Seahawks taking on the Carolina Panthers. And this seems very
strange as the Seahawks vibe for the best record in
(06:21):
the National Football League here over the next couple of weeks,
that it's the Carolina Panthers who have a shot at
winning the divisional title this week and not the Seahawks. Yeah,
Seahawks can win and still have work to do afterwards.
Where Carolina wins and they have won their division against
(06:42):
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and so there will be a
playoff atmosphere, certainly in Charlotte on Sunday, and the Seahawks
aren't gonna need to match that intensity because they've got
a lot at stake here over the next couple of weeks.
And despite their impressive audit record at this stage, it's
(07:02):
Carolina that can cement something where the Seahawks can't. And
that seems weird, But them's the rules.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
That's the right, that's the right, And it's been.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
A strange year for Carolina, let's face it. I mean,
I don't even know. As I sit here on this
Friday morning, getting ready to face them in this huge
game on Sunday, I can't even tell you if they're
any good. I'm not sure that they really are. They're
certainly better than what they've been here in the last
couple of years. They're certainly capable of defeating the Seahawks
(07:37):
despite being a seven point underdog at home for a
game where they can clinch their division this week.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
But to me.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
That they still are this just ghastly unknown. I mean,
they started the season at one and three on the year.
They did have a three game winning streak in October,
but they defeated Miami, Dallas and the Jets. I mean,
not exactly the who's who of the best teams in
the National.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Football League this year and then since that time.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Since October nineteenth, the Carolina Panthers have not won or
lost back to back games. They have alternated wins since
October nineteenth, believe it or not, wins and losses. So
four and three since Week seven have not won back
to back games, have not lost back to back games.
(08:34):
How do you figure a team like that out? Can't
They've got impressive wins this year. They're just not beaten
up on the dregs. They've defeated the Rams this year,
They've defeated the Buccaneers this year. They've defeated the Packers
this year. They defeated the Atlanta Falcons back when we
thought the Falcons were good, and they beat them thirty
to nine.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
The demolished them.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
But all four of those wins, impressive wins on their resume,
all came out home, which obviously gets our attention because
the Seahawks will be playing Carolina at Carolina. But on
the flip side, they've also lost two games to New
Orleans this year. They lost, They've given the Arizona Cardinals
one of their three wins so far this season, and
(09:17):
then they've lost, like to Buffalo by thirty one, to
New England by twenty nine, to San Francisco by twenty one,
and it wasn't even that close.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
So they're a bit of a mystery.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
And certainly they've gotten better under Dave Canalis since he
took over as head coach, and Bryce Young seems to
have settled into at least confident that I am a
worthy NFL starting quarterback. I don't think it good we're
close to calling him a star. He's certainly not a superstar.
(09:51):
He certainly hasn't lived up to the number one overall
selection in the National Football League status that he came
into the league with. He certainly hasn't played to justify
everything Carolina did in order to get him with that
number one overall selection. But that benching that took place
a year ago, that was certainly controversial. And remember it
(10:15):
was a year ago. People were asking, is Bryce you'ng
going to get traded at the trading deadline? You know,
just a year and a half into his NFL career.
That's how disappointing he had been. Then he got the
starting job back, played better at the close of last season,
and then this year he certainly locked in the starting
position at Carolina. There's been no question all season long
(10:38):
whether or not he should be the Panthers as starting quarterback.
Still not playing at a star or superstar level, but
at least he's justifying the number one selection or showing
signs of that. But it's just they're a mysterious team
and have to be taken seriously. And the good news
is that the Seahawks have so much at stake over
(10:59):
the next cup of days. There's no way to take
them lightly and there's no way not to be ready
for the atmosphere that you're walking into on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
Yeah, and I do feel confident with the Seahawks going
on the road because we have done well on the road.
But they're definitely a force to be reckoned with. It's
just funny. We had Mike kayon from the Charlotte Observer
on Tuesday and ask I asked him about the inconsistency
of the Panthers, and even he couldn't figure it out
and he covers them every single day. He's like, I
have no idea who this team is because they have
(11:29):
not shown us the same thing one week to the next.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
And but I do believe that is a sign of progress.
It's a sign of this. I mean, they're not going
to win the super Bowl. Yeah, it's just not going
to happen. You know, they're not there yet, right So
for them to just achieve a divisional title.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
It's a pretty big deal.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
That's a really big deal for the organization. It does
show growth.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Even if you are inconsistent, maybe that's the last.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
Thing that comes.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
At least you've shown the ability to beat some good
teams this year, at least you're you know, you're not
a doormat like you've been here in the last couple
of seasons. That's clear you you kind of graduated from
that at the end of last season, and then this
year you're picking up some signature wins along the way,
and so it certainly does speak to progress. But they
(12:22):
their goals aren't the same as what the Seahawks are
right now. I mean, if the Seahawks win the division
title this year, even though we're facing two teams that
are eleven and four, and Carolina is trying to hold
off a team that can't figure out if it's good
or not either in Tampa Bay, there's no Ah Man,
(12:42):
nice job, Fellas, what a great year.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
No, there's where there's trying.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
To figure out to be done.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
How do we win the tournament?
Speaker 4 (12:50):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (12:50):
How do we win?
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Even if we get to buy three consecutive games against
the best teams that the NFL has to offer, with
absolutely no wiggle room for error there, Carolina, they pull
off a win this Sunday and Tampa Bay loses and
they take the division on Sunday, they're putting their feet
up on a desk smoking a cigar, you know, poorn champagne.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Over their heads.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
They've accomplished something this year that nobody thought that they
were going to accomplish, and then they're just going to
get trucked in the NFL playoffs. Now they might win
a game, but there's no way they're winning four games
in a row.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Not this team.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
And so you know, from that standpoint, that's also sort
of a difficult thing to go up against.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
I mean, in.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
Essence, we're facing the Carolina Panthers with their super Bowl
on the line the next couple of weeks. This is
their super Bowl. The Seahawks Super Bowl is the super Bowl,
the Carolina Panthers super Bowl. I mean, yeah, they're going
to tell you we got more work to do. They're
going to say that, But truthfully, the fan base, coaching staff,
(13:57):
even the players, and a truth sera are gone to
view it as man, we win a championship or a
division championship, we make the playoffs, considering where we were
a year and a half ago, that's a hell of
an accomplishment. Can't wait for next season where our goals
are even bigger than a division title.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
And that's how they should be, because that is a
big accomplishment coming from where they were a year and
a half ago. So, I mean, I think the interesting
thing is that the one similarity between these two teams
pre season is that no one picked the Seahawks to
win the division either. It was the Rams and the
forty nine ers with maybe the Cardinals as a thought,
and the Seahawks were not even a thought.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
I think there were at least some people locally, Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah,
I don't even think Carolina's local people. We're picking point
and so I think it will be viewed by their media,
by their fan base, by the organization as the success.
They beat the Seahawks on Sunday, I mean, like I said,
we're kind of facing them in their super Bowl. Yeah,
(14:57):
I mean, they get to play the game at home. Now,
I mean they there's a chance they have to play
at Tampa the following week with the division on the line.
So that's an even bigger game next week. But they
have a chance at home to beat the team currently
with the number one seed and puts them in a
position that if Tampa were to fall this week in
(15:18):
they could win the division title this weekend. They could
eliminate all of the drama. So they've got a lot.
They got a lot on the line. Good news for
us up here in the Pacific Northwest. Our team has
a lot on the line as well. So it should
be fun, should be very interesting. And I'm not sure
at the beginning of the year if we circled this
game as being as interesting as it's turned out to be.
Speaker 4 (15:39):
No, not at all. We were like, oh, well, I
don't like that they're playing on the road then this season,
but at least it's Carolina. Then they have to finish
the San Francisco.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
Yeah, the only thing that cross your mind, like, it's
not hurricane season, is it when we go there?
Speaker 2 (15:51):
No, we don't have to worry about that, do we.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
All Right, let's find out what's on tap for the
rest of the show today.
Speaker 4 (15:59):
What's on tech?
Speaker 2 (16:01):
What's on tech?
Speaker 3 (16:02):
All right, Seahawks at Carolina. It'll be Sunday at ten o'clock.
That's the kickoff. They've already had some games played this
week on Christmas Day, not exactly, three gyms, not exactly.
You know what Roger Goodell had in mind when he
decided that the NBA gets too much attention on Christmas,
and in perfect Christmas spirit, decided to take all of
(16:24):
their attention away. I don't think it was very successful.
You had two games on Netflix and one on Prime Video.
I didn't watch any of them. I just drew a
line in the sand. I'm not gonna watch any of them.
I don't like the way that they are acting as
a league when it comes to a Christmas Day. And
then you also want to try to force people after
they just bought Christmas presents for all their kids. Now
(16:47):
you've got to buy two streaming services in order to
watch our product over this weekend. Potentially, I don't like it,
so I protested against it.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
I'm in Fantasy Football Championship mode, though, so I had
to pay attention to it somewhat.
Speaker 4 (17:00):
Oh, how did it go for you?
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Okay? Okay, I mean not good. But it did.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
But it could be worse.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
It could have been. It could have been a lot worse.
Speaker 3 (17:07):
Jacory Krossky Merrit Jackson Feltz starts Jacory Crossy.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
It picks him up off the.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
Waivers because I almost picked him up last week.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
And he scores two touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
Yeah, and he only had two productive carries the entire game,
and one was for a seventy two yard touchdown and
the other one was their ten yard touchdown killing.
Speaker 2 (17:26):
Yeah that's a kicking.
Speaker 5 (17:27):
Then, yeah, you know in the nuts in I was
gonna say, Jimmy, but yes, straight straight straight to the
old chestnuts.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
So the results from yesterday, Broncos win twenty to thirteen
over the Kansas City Chiefs. So the Denver Broncos right
now carried the best record in the National Football League,
but they still haven't wrapped up their division. The Dallas
Cowboys in mostly meaningless game one thirty to twenty three
over the Commanders yesterday, and the Minnesota Vikings finished the
(18:02):
Detroit Lions disappointing season. The Vikings won twenty three to ten.
Detroit committed six turnovers. Six turnovers. How often you see
a team in the NFL lose the turnover battle sixth
to nothing.
Speaker 4 (18:16):
Ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
That's what happened yesterday. The Lions officially eliminated from the playoffs.
Can't be described as anything but crushing disappointment, Masses. I
really thought the Detroit Lions weren't going to skip a
beat without their coordinators that they lost in the offseason,
and instead they don't even make it to Week eighteen
alive in the playoffs, So they're five hundred football team
(18:38):
right now.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
Did not see that coming.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
It is disappointing because I think we all agree that
we want to see them do well because they're a
fun team to watch.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
Usually they're very likable. Yeah, yeah, they're fun to watch.
I don't know if you cannot like Dan Campbell, but
certainly something was missing this year and they could not
get it together in time. Week number seventeen continues on Sunday.
There as there are playoff implications everywhere.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
Uh, and there's.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
Also a scenario where there could be pretty much no
playoff implications the final week. Oh I mean not no,
I mean obviously the Seahawks would have something at stake
in that final week, but their CBS Sports wrote an
article about how this thing could pan out where the
NFL isn't going to have any drama, or what drama
(19:29):
they have in the last week will be so insignificant
as opposed to a driving force, like I cannot miss
this Sunday of action, but that that would have.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
To mean that all the chips fell a certain way.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
Yeah this weekend, you know that.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
Yes, yeah, they'llg it if they have to.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
Uh yeah, Jacksonville at Indianapolis, Philadelphia at Buffalo, Chicago at
San Francisco, just some of the games on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (19:57):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
The NBA did have five games, and it was let's
a better experience, a better product than what the NFL
put out.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
Some good games there. The best one was at night.
Speaker 3 (20:06):
Where nikolet Jokic had one of the great statistical games
in the history of the league. If you haven't seen
the stat line. In a one forty two, one thirty
eight overtime win over Minnesota, Joker had fifty six points,
sixteen rebounds, and fifteen assists.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Just absurd.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
College football, the Michigan job is still not settled. Here
we sit, we've had two days off from the show,
and we don't have a job announcement, but we do
have a new front runner as of this morning. Looks
like the Michigan job is enticing enough that Kyle Whittingham
did not stay retired for long. Sounds like he is
(20:47):
the front runner, and it sounds like there's some momentum
for that getting done today. So Kyle Whittingham, former very
good coach head coach at Utah could be the next
Michigan Wolverines head coach, which of course, will make Jed
Fish's life a little easier. I suppose, maybe not better,
but easier. Denzel Boston, since we last spoke, he is
(21:10):
entering the NFL Draft. There's no surprise there. The college
football Playoff resumes on New Year's Eve. The Kraken have
suddenly decided to play good hockey. They've won three straight
games after losing ten out of eleven, and they're doing
it while being riddled with injuries. Yep, who can figure
it out. They won't play again until Sunday against the
Philadelphia Flyers. I have not spoken to you since Rob
(21:32):
Refsneiders signed a contract with the Mariners.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
We'll spend a little time on that today, and good
for the Major League Baseball. They add some.
Speaker 3 (21:40):
Activity every single day during the holidays, including Tyler Soderstrom
signing an extension with the Athletics on Christmas Day.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
Why wouldn't you give yourself.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
The present of an eighty six million dollar contract on
Christmas Day?
Speaker 4 (21:53):
I tried to give myself that present on Christmas Day,
but it didn't work out.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
Yeah, I mean, somebody really said, hey, it's Christmas, leave
me a yeah.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
No, oh oh, you want to pay me eight All right,
I'll take a Christmas break.
Speaker 3 (22:06):
I mean, do you guys? Is nothing sacred? Take your
eighty six million dollars and shove it. I'll talk to
you tomorrow. So yeah, he signed yesterday.
Speaker 4 (22:16):
Carntle Christmas for eighty six million.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
We got Greg Bell coming up today. We got Hugh
Millon coming up today. We got Mike Sando coming up.
On a Friday today, it is a football Friday sponsored
by Tito's Handmade Vodka, proud sponsor of the Seahawks, distilled
and bottled by Fifth Generation, Inc. Austin, Texas, forty percent
alcohol by volume, saver responsibly.
Speaker 2 (22:36):
We'll talk some college football next.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
It's Chuck and Ashley with you Sports Radio ninety three
point three KJRFM.
Speaker 2 (22:59):
Hey, good morning.
Speaker 3 (23:00):
It is Chuck Powell and Ashley Ryan with you know,
Bucky Jacobson today as we're going live this morning here
on Chuck and Buck Sports Radio ninety three point three
k JR FM. On this Friday. Yeah, you come back
to work on a Friday, boy, you can really work
the system sometimes and then get a couple more days off.
Speaker 2 (23:17):
How many days do we get off next week?
Speaker 4 (23:19):
By the way, two Okay, yeah, New Year's even New
Year's Day. I'm taking the Friday off.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
And you're taking the Friday off? Are you sure? Because
I can really, I can really sell this process here.
Speaker 4 (23:32):
No, I mean I think I would like us to
get more.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
Yeah, no, what I'm saying, I can really you know, I'm.
Speaker 4 (23:39):
Experience you really like it. Yeah, but you got the
Monday and the Tuesday off and I did not, So
it doesn't feel like a Monday to me. Okay, it
feels like just a day of weirdness.
Speaker 2 (23:50):
Yeah. Just just I'm telling you, like, you can probably
package this thing and sell it.
Speaker 4 (23:55):
I like your plan. I would do Monday, Tuesday and
then just come to work Friday.
Speaker 2 (24:00):
What you know, five days off work a day and
then get two days off.
Speaker 4 (24:04):
Yeah, that's that's a rough life.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
There's probably something to it.
Speaker 4 (24:06):
I think there's a lot of somethings to it.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
Yeah. So anyway, I'll do my best to get through today.
Speaker 4 (24:15):
Segment at a time, check and get.
Speaker 3 (24:17):
Those two hard earned days off tomorrow and then and
then contemplate whether I'll be back on Monday.
Speaker 2 (24:26):
All right, So no cliche.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
Keys to victory coming up at six forty five again
have to remind myself that it is a Friday, and
it is a football Friday, so we'll be doing that
at six forty five. I didn't mention this, but we
should probably spend a little bit more time on it.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
Woke up this morning to more than a rumor.
Speaker 3 (24:44):
When Adam Schefter reports on stuff that comes out of Michigan,
where he went to school, usually you can bank on
it being some pretty concrete information. So lo and behold
of all the people to have emerged as the candidate.
Kyle Whittingham out of you, who just retired from football coaching, right, Yeah, Well,
apparently he was just retiring from coaching at Utah because
(25:07):
with the opportunity to be head coach at the at Michigan,
which is a step up. I mean, Utah's a fine program,
but obviously that's a step up. That was enticing enough
for Kyle Whittingham to say, I'm going to come out
of years of retirement or days of retirement.
Speaker 2 (25:24):
Or hours of retirement kind of like my he's kind
of doing what I'm doing yesday.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
He's coming back to work at Michigan on a Friday
and then taking two more days off. Sounds like it,
but Kyle Whittingham looks like he just wanted a better
job out of this process, and he looks like he's
emerging as the top candidate. And as a matter of fact,
there was even a suggestion this morning that it is
just a matter of figuring out a contract. So he's
(25:51):
the guy that they've zoned in on. I don't know
how many times they've swung and missed, or who they
might have been waiting for, or maybe we're getting a
soft no from the Kaelin de Bores of the world,
and then once he advanced in the playoffs, maybe it turned.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Into a hard no.
Speaker 3 (26:10):
I mean hard to hard to hard to know Jedfish,
I don't know how much of a candidate that he
was for this job, but his name certainly stayed in
in it all the way through this morning, potentially, And
so look, I mean, maybe Jedfish really dreamt of being
the Michigan head coach and he would have taken it
(26:32):
had he been given an offer. I will never know,
or well probably will never know, but there's got to
be something to Even if he's disappointed that Michigan didn't
fall all over itself to hire him, there's got to
be something to well, at least this is over. At
least at least we can I can stop being mentioned
in rumors because it probably is not helping me as
(26:56):
Washington's head coach.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
So maybe there's bitter disappointment.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
Maybe there was more smoke than what we even realized
with Jed Fish, but it sounds like he's not going
to be the Michigan head coach. There are even some
people that are reported he really never was that strong
of a candidate, where Kyle Whittingham now seems like it's
going to be his job.
Speaker 1 (27:17):
Well.
Speaker 4 (27:17):
And the thing that I think is so interesting is
all of these I mean, you take Dillingham, Fish and Deboor,
all three who were the original strong candidates right, and
it from what I can gather, none of them ever
actually communicated with Michigan about the job or were offered
anything about the job, which I think is I mean,
I guess in this day and age, you can easily
(27:39):
say that because it's all done through representation. So just
because you didn't talk to them doesn't mean your people
didn't talk to them. But yeah, it does seem that
now all of a sudden, very quickly, Kyle Whittingham, who
I mean, I would at least want to be retired
for a couple weeks.
Speaker 3 (27:54):
Yeah, I mean again, who really knows what happened. It
kind of feels to me like debor might have been
the choice. Yeah, and then he makes the playoffs and
they seem perfectly willing to wait a little while longer.
This isn't lsu. We have to have an answer now, Kiffin,
(28:15):
or we're moving on. It didn't feel like it was
that scenario. But then all of a sudden, he wins,
and now you're not gonna play again for another ten days.
And if he wins again, you know he's if he
hasn't left by now, he's not gonna He's not gonna
leave if he's.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
In the final four, for goodness sake.
Speaker 3 (28:34):
So it kind of feels like that, And until they
got an absolute concrete answer from him, or if he
advanced far enough in the playoffs, then they weren't gonna
move on. Jedfish kind of felt like somebody that he's
there if we need him. That's kind of how it
felt to me. And then maybe there was this knowledge
(28:56):
that the Michigan Wolverines had that Kyle Whittingham is our guy.
Speaker 2 (29:02):
We'd love to have him.
Speaker 3 (29:04):
But we have to conduct this thing quietly otherwise we're
gonna chase him off. Yeah, because he is officially he
is retired. And so maybe there was just this we're
being patient with our guy, the guy that we want,
and if there's going to come a time where we
(29:25):
can't be patient anymore. So maybe they were being patient
with the boar. Maybe they were being patient with Kyle
Whittingham to work through whether or not because not only
are you not only are you staying in coaching, you
got you're starting something new. He's sixty six years old
and he looks fantastic and he's still doing a great
job as a football coach. But you're starting a new
(29:48):
project that is bigger than the one that you were
walking away from because you were tired, right, I mean,
so you gotta talk to the family, have an honest
moment yourself as to whether or not you have the
strength and the energy to bite off this big of
a wad.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
And that's that's what he's doing. So maybe it is.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
Just as simple as Michigan knew all along. They're pecking order,
and they were willing to be patient, unlike most of
these programs who still who in silly fashion, you know,
just hurry, hurry.
Speaker 2 (30:23):
Hurry, hurry. Just a wait, wait, wait, wait wait. Maybe
Michigan knew all along. I don't know.
Speaker 4 (30:28):
Yeah, And it's possible that it's interesting because obviously, again
we don't know this the intricacies of the way that
this works. But with Dillingham, he got his you know,
he ended up getting a great offer from ASU.
Speaker 3 (30:43):
And maybe he was there too, Yeah, and maybe they
were patiently waiting for him.
Speaker 4 (30:47):
Maybe, But I just think it's interesting. I wonder how
much of it is actually Michigan who has been going
after all these people, or as you say, maybe it
has been deborn. They've been patiently waiting and then like
agents have been using this as okay, well, it looks
like Michigan's really interesting than Dillingham. Yes, you are you
going to step up and give him a you know?
And so at least with witting him, they don't have that.
They don't have to worry about offering him something and
(31:07):
then have Michigan or having Utah come back and match it,
and then there's another candidate that's not a possibility for
them anymore.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
Yeah. I don't think witting Aam's grandkids can match this.
Speaker 4 (31:15):
Offer, No, probably not, although Grandpa.
Speaker 3 (31:21):
We'll give you five years forty million dollars to turn
him down.
Speaker 4 (31:26):
He's like, that's already my own money.
Speaker 2 (31:30):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
Or maybe they've just got a poem planned where Dillingham
and Whittingham both fit the iambic pentamina, and so they
just like, we've got a we need a Ham. I'm
not we need it. I'm not throwing this poem away
just because we can't find a four syllable coach.
Speaker 4 (31:47):
I can't wait to find out if he's witting him.
Isn't the guy what Ham comes next?
Speaker 2 (31:54):
Bellingham? There's a guy named Bellingham out there.
Speaker 3 (31:57):
Excellently all right, No cliche, Key's to victory next. Sports
Radio ninety three point three KJRF.
Speaker 4 (32:04):
Will happen?
Speaker 3 (32:05):
Turns out that throwing your hands up in the air
just isn't like riding a bike.
Speaker 4 (32:08):
No, you can't just throw up and assume they're gonna
wave themselves like they don't care exactly.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
There's gotta be a lot of thought, energy effort put
into it.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
Anyway, I got caught off, got caught a little flat
footed there, Sorry about it, but it's not going to
disrupt anything with our segment here every Friday. No cliche
keys to victory before every Seahawks game, and it's gonna
be hard for me not to use a cliche honestly
against this weird ass Carolina team that we're facing on Sunday.
(32:36):
But what does it boil down to for you, Ashley, I'm.
Speaker 4 (32:39):
Gonna say the key to this game is gonna be
Rashid Shaheed because we have been getting him more involved
in the offense. And obviously he's had some huge special
teams moments, but I think the more that he has
been involved in each game, the better we have been doing.
I think he has been he's finally figured out like
his place on this team. And so if we can
(33:00):
get I mean, I don't want to be greedy, but
if we could get another punt return or kickoff return,
you know, I think we're in a good spot.
Speaker 3 (33:08):
You get a kick return and something unexpected like that
or a defensive touchdown, yeah, then Carolina can't overcome that.
Speaker 4 (33:16):
No, I don't think what you're saying. Yeah, I don't
think they can. But I also just think in terms
of just how just getting him involved in the offense
in general, because he has he's had some interesting runs
after the catch, and he is so versatile and so quick,
and I think if you could be able to use him,
then you're gonna that's gonna be good for Jackson Smith
(33:38):
and Jigba. It's boosting Sam Darnold's confidence. I think, Rashid Shaheed,
there you go.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
All right, Rashid Shaheed is Ashley's no cliche keet to victory.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
They're so weird.
Speaker 3 (33:48):
I mean, there's just there's no pattern to their success
or to their failure. I mean, they just beat Tampa
Bay and they held Baker Mayfield under one hundred and
fifty passing yards.
Speaker 2 (33:57):
All right, yeah, you.
Speaker 3 (33:58):
Old Baker Mayfield probably gonna beat the Buccaneers, and yet
Tyler Schuck lights them up for.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
Like two eighty the previous week, no sense.
Speaker 3 (34:07):
Yeah, and then you beat you lost in New Orleans
twice this year, and you held the passing by then
Alvin Kamara had one of his best games against the
Los Angeles Ramsy didn't really stop them, but you did
contain them. And then you got to pick six and
that ended up being the difference against the Green Bay Packers.
You somehow won that game by three points even though
(34:29):
you had one hundred passing yards. I mean, what NFL
team has just one hundred passing yards and probably fewer
than that. I didn't even count up the sack totals,
so it's probably fewer than one hundred passing yards. You
get blown out by the Buffalo Bills because you give
up two hundred rushing yards to James Cook, and yet
(34:49):
you defeat the New England Patriots and they're leading rusher
in that game at thirty eight?
Speaker 4 (34:55):
What the f or the Carolina Panthers to pull from
to east?
Speaker 2 (35:00):
So when you face a.
Speaker 3 (35:01):
Team like this, I mean, what they tend to be
good at is winning close games. They figure out a
way they get a play, especially at home. So you know,
I mean blow them out. I mean is that the key?
Speaker 4 (35:17):
I would hope.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
So, So I think this is again sounding very cliche,
and it's that are my rules, and I shouldn't do this,
But I mean, if you having a balanced attack and
you don't turn the ball over, I just don't think
the Carolina Panthers are going to be able to beat you.
Speaker 4 (35:32):
So and don't panic, because that's what it seemed like
the Buccaneers were doing last week.
Speaker 3 (35:37):
I mean, Jekyl and Hyde and there's like two other personalities,
and it is like Sybil, you might they might be
able to shut down your run, so and maybe you
can still pass your way to victory. There's really nothing
consistent about how the Carolina Panthers win games other than
they usually win close games at home.
Speaker 4 (35:56):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
That's that's about the only consistent trait that they possess
as a team.
Speaker 4 (36:00):
So don't give them that opportunity.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
Yeah, I mean, if you go in there and you
fail at one of the functions of football, if you
fail at special teams, or you fail at running the football,
or you fail at throwing the football or stopping the
run or stopping the pass, if you because Brice Young
had four and forty eight passing.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
Yards in a game, it's won a game that way.
Speaker 3 (36:21):
Even though he had one hundred and beat Green Bay. Like,
there's just they're just a strange team. So I'm going
to say, as long as you're balanced and you're not
terrible at any one thing.
Speaker 2 (36:32):
You should win this game against the Carolina Panthers.
Speaker 3 (36:35):
As a matter of fact, I will say you will
win this game, yes, the Carolina.
Speaker 4 (36:38):
And I think the cliches are allowed in certain times
when literally, the cliches are the keys.
Speaker 3 (36:44):
Yeah, yeah, that's true. You just have to explain it
all right. Headlines Next, Greg Bell will try to solve
the riddle that is Carolina.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
Next. Sports Radio ninety three point three KHARFM
