(00:00):
It's KFI AM six forty and you'relistening to the Conway Show on demand on
the iHeartRadio app. All right,we have one of our favorite guests comes
on every single week and this ismy absolute favorite topic. It is the
garage. That's my part of thehouse. I own the garage. I
(00:22):
sit in the garage on weekends.I can get away from everybody and everything,
and all I do is arrange itand rearrange it and rearrange it and
clean it up. And I enjoyit. Dean Sharp is with us the
house whisper heard every weekend on thestation on KFI in the mornings. Dean,
Welcome to CAFI. How you Bob, present and attentive? Okay I,
(00:44):
this is my favorite topic in theworld. And I never heard this
term before, but technically you're right. As usual, the garage is considered
outside. Yes, it is yesterday. I never thought about that. There's
a short list of things that everybodyshould know about the garage, and I'll
tell you where where it becomes important. It's not just trivia, but the
building code treats the garage as outside. OKAYU area outside, right, And
(01:07):
the reason is because there's a lotof stuff that goes on in the garage.
You know, chemicals get stored there, flammable stuff, right, noxious
fumes can happen out in the garage. So here's something I see way too
often, which is, you know, I go into somebody's garage on a
consult and I look up and I'mlike, oh, they look They're like,
hey, look at us. We'veopened up the whole attic space from
(01:30):
the garage, or we've run airconditioning. I ran an extra duct into
the garage, so now that thegarage is is cool and warm when we
need it to be. And I'mlike, yeah, and you know,
you've just violated code because you've justput a huge hole in the firewall.
It's supposed to separate you from therest of the house. So just everybody
(01:52):
should know that that. You know, you can heat and air condition the
garage, but it's got to bea separate system, really, And what
you got yeah, yeah, yeah, because we can't have a fire access
that easy just jumping through that hole. Right, Anything that starts in the
garage jumps through that big duct holeinto your attic space, and then we're
(02:13):
in big trouble. You know,I didn't know this, and I'm sure
you'll think to yourself, you know, when you at six point thirty,
when you finally, you know, put your headphones down and think of think
back on the segment, you'll probablythink, what an idiot. But we
were bringing a piece of furniture intothe house and it didn't fit into the
house. So I had to takethe gage. The door that leads from
the garage into the house. Itook it off and it fell over because
(02:36):
it's nine hundred pounds. I neverknew that. Yeah, well, okay,
so now a lot of people thinkthat there's a one hour separation fire
separation between the garage and the house. It isn't, but it is a
twenty minute separation. That means thatthat door has to be a solid core
door. It weighs just as muchper pound or per square foot, I
(02:58):
should say, as like your frontdoor. You know, it's got to
be solid because it's got to haveat least twenty minutes of protection before a
fire that's in the garage burns throughto get into the house. Okay,
so you can't put just any doorup there. It has to be at
least tested for twenty minutes twenty it'sgot to be twenty minute fire testing rated
door, and it should be onself closing hinges as well. Oh it
(03:23):
is. Okay, yeah I didn'tknow. I didn't know why it was,
but yes, you're right, itis so same reason, same,
same whole idea. If you havea totally unfinished garage, meaning you know,
like you see bear studs and everything, the one wall that is finished
that probably has smooth stucco on itis the wall that the garage shares with
the house. That's because of thefire rating. I didn't know that,
(03:44):
but honestly, god, I hadno idea that you can't run, you
know, into the garage or elseyou've broken code. And I had no
idea that that's why that wall isfinished. Yeah, exactly, a lot
of people have told me, they'relike, you know what they did the
one wall, they do the otherthree. But I was also told not
(04:04):
to put a lot of investment intodry walling and making that garage great because
eventually all that stuff does, youknow, you know, tear apart because
it is outdoors. I don't agreewith that, Okay, Okay, I
don't agree not not these days garagedoors seal up really amazingly well. And
you can condition a space now nowthat we live in the age of sectional
(04:27):
garage door, you can have itweather sealed, you can have it air
sealed. Garages are one of thoseamazing spaces. I mean, you were
talking about love we got rolling here, right, Garage is one of those
amazing spaces that is available to ahomeowner without expanding the house. I mean,
it really is if you want totreat it right. It can be
a flex space. It can be, you know, the the music studio.
(04:50):
It can be the entertainment area,it can be the game room,
and on and on and on itgoes. But there's you know, those
things that you should know about yourgarage if you're going to treat it that
way, Like the fact that youknow on most garage is the floor is
not level. It has a slopeto it. Oh I didn't know that.
Yeah yeah, yeah, so no, no for draining water. Don't
(05:11):
get me wrong. The older thegarage. Right, if you're living in
a house that's built, let's saynineteen sixty in earlier, chances are your
garage slab is perfectly flat. Okay, like mine, right, which we
expanded into and I turned it intomy family room. But anything, uh,
you know, mid seventies and later. The garage floor is sloped so
(05:32):
that anything that spills on it drainsout the main doors. So there's an
eighth of an inch slope, soyou don't notice it until somebody goes in
and says, you know what,I'm gonna make that my bedroom. And
they put their big cabinets up there, and they they've got this, this,
this, this human sized dresser, and all of a sudden they step
back and they're like, wow,it's like I'm living in an episode of
(05:54):
Batman. All right, hold themon second, you stay with us,
su sure, okay, all right. Dean Sharters with us is great.
We're talking all about garages, garagedoors, the interior storage, how many
people can keep their cars in it, how you can cool it down in
the summer. I love the garage. It's my favorite part of the house.
If Dean Sharp came on every weekand just talked about garages, I
(06:15):
would love it. You're listening toTim Conway Junior on demand from KFI AM
six forty. Dean Sharp is withus. He's the house whisper every Saturday
morning on KFI AM six forty fromsix to eight am, and then right
back on Sunday from nine am untilnoon. Talking about garages, Dean,
have you seen and you recommend whatI'm a big screen door as a backup
(06:41):
to the garage door, so youcan have the garage door open and then
the screen door down and keep allthe bugs out. Do those work or
does that fall apart? You knowwhat? When it comes to retractable screens,
I'm a little suspicious and I gottasay I'm not even thrilled about them
on generally the way they work onyou know, slow doors out onto your
deck and somebody's right now sitting athome thinking, you know, hey,
(07:04):
mine works great. But seventeen feetthat's the average width of a garage door.
That's a long ways for a screento go, you know, into
a little pocket. So nah,I'm not a huge fan. Not a
huge fan. You know. Krozierhas something that I got to investigate because
one of my I guess pet peevesor one of my I don't know,
(07:25):
scares frights, whatever is that Ialways have to double back to the house
to see if I left the garagedoor open. And Krozer has an app
where you can see it and ittells him whether it's open or closed.
Most of the new garage door openershad that in there already installed a little
cam. Yeah, exactly, crowsexactly. I was gonna say, Tim,
I'm like, hey, welcome tothe twenty first CENTID I got a
(07:45):
chamberlain, which it is. Andalso the motors to open and close the
garage door, you know, famouslyand throughout historically have always been in the
center, and now they're on theside to give you more room. And
it's more I guess esthetically pleasing.Well, well, it's not just asthetically
pleasing. It means that above thegarage door. And now, of course
(08:05):
you still have to have the trackup there where the garage door, but
that whole area is free and clearfor storage my friends. So yeah,
I really like the sidewinder motors. They're direct drive, they're super quiet,
they're super reliable, and yeah, they take up about one foot of space
right next to the garage door onthe front wall. And what about redoing
(08:26):
the floor, I know we hadtalked about that before. Do you have
to if an old if you havean old garage floor and our house was
built in the nineteen thirties. DoI have to grind it and etch it
to get all the oil off beforeI put any kind of paint down.
Probably you probably do, just tobe fair and honest about it. But
I got to tell you this isthe golden age of that kind of stuff.
(08:48):
Because that little grinder you can findit sitting at the tool rental place
at the big box store. Well, you can do yourself. Absolutely.
I know that need to call insome company anymore. This has become a
DIY thing. Wow. It's onlybecause the tool is so great and it's
so easy to work with and sofunctional, so you can rent it and
resurface your garage floor in the corein less than a day. In less
(09:11):
than a day, Okay. Theshop back my grandfather told me this at
a very young age. He said, always get the biggest one with the
highest power motor, and you'll cutdown on the time you have to clean
up, and you'll be excited touse it because of the power of the
such And I think he was right. Shopbacks are great. In fact,
(09:31):
if you've got a workshop set upfor your garage, then I would recommend
that you actually run a hose systemfrom all of your major tools right the
exhaust hose and then hook them upto a shop back. You don't have
to have a big recirculation filtered system. You can hook them up to a
shop back and basically have a veryvery small switch. I'm gonna have to
(09:52):
look this up for you, butthere's a very very small switch that you
can buy. It costs me,I'm going to say less than one hundred
dollars. And if you plug inyour tool to that switchbox and then plug
that into the shop fact, assoon as the switchbox detects the draw,
like you turn on your micsaw andyou start to use it, it'll automatically
(10:13):
turn the shop back on. Theshop back will keep running for about eight
seconds after you've finished your cut. That's sensational. One more step you don't
have to worry about exactly. That'sterrific. I love the they sum at
halt Low's and Home Depot. It'sthe track with the with the hooks on
it for cords and tools and stufflike that. I think those are beautiful
(10:33):
and they've come a long way too. Yeah, if you're gonna transform your
garage into a workshop area, oreven if you just have a corner of
it for tools. Those tracked systemsup against the wall are fantastic, modular.
You can change your mind later. That's what I like. You know,
I appreciate the fact that my dadused to take tools. He would
(10:54):
hang them on peg board and thenhe would like paint the outline of the
tool with a spray can, andthat all worked great until he replaced the
tool, and then it's like, well, it doesn't look right anymore.
That's not the shadow of that tool. That's the guy who spent a lot
of time, like me in thatgarage. We spent some serious time in
the garage. You know what Ithink I could safely say has never happened
(11:16):
in the history of the world.Like I have a ton and I've separated
all the screws in the nails.I went and did that for a weekend,
and I put them out, allthose little tiny drawers. You know,
there's like thirty drawers in a littletool, like a little chest.
I guarantee you there's never been aman or a woman in this world who,
right before he died, he usedhis last screw or nail that he
(11:39):
had in the garage and he wasdone. Oh my god, that's so
true. That's why, you knowwhat, figure out how many screws you're
gonna need and buy you know, maybe ten percent more, because no that
that collection is just going to keepgrowing and growing and growing. Another thing
I learned at an early age,and I've used this rule of thumb whenever
(12:01):
we buy any furniture or any doit yourself project. We're putting together a
barbecue or a piece of furnitu orwhatever, and it has screws, I
always go to Home Deep or Lowsand I show the guy the type of
screw and he gives me those samescrews in stainless steel. And that's been
a life saver for me. Ohmy gosh, I can't believe you brought
this up. I talked about thatthis last weekend. It was well our
(12:24):
DIY tips and that is whatever screwsor tools came in the box and that
little plastic book, just throw themout. Don't take him to the hardware
store and replace them. Right.Actual, It's as if the manufacture of
anything that has to be assembled inyour home has decided to make their entire
profit margin on the screw Isn't thatamazing? Or anchors, Yes, they're
(12:46):
the worst in the world. Theydon't be tempted, don't do it.
They should rename those screws strippers, because every time you use one of those
screws, it strips. You knowwhat. They After all these decades of
doing this, it's still it stillpulls me in. I was mounting a
nest cam on the corner of ourhouse and I opened the package and there
(13:09):
there are two screws there, andyou know what, they looked good.
It looked good, and I thoughtto myself, you know what, it's
just a little plastic bracket. I'mjust gonna And I got out the screw
drive and I'm like, nope,no, ruined it. Why did I
fall for it? Again? That'sgreat. It's amazing how cheap those screws
(13:33):
are, and how you're right, what is the profit margin where they can't
handle that? It's always gone fromlike, yeah, it's gone for like
three cents to one and a halfcents. Yeah, but you know,
I guess if you're selling a millionof them, I give I guess.
So, buddy, I really appreciateit. If you came on and talk
about garages every Thursday, it wouldimprove my life. All right, Well,
(13:54):
we'll just rename Thursday's garages with theDean Sharp. That's perfect, buddy,
I really appreciate it. All right, we'll be listening this weekend.
Thanks for coming on, man,Thanks Bud. All right, there he
goes Dean Sharp every Saturday morning sixto eight am and Sunday from nine am
until noon. I could literally talkabout garages for two hours a day.
Yeah, man, it's just myfavorite place in the world to be.
I got I got rid of justthis week. I got rid of a
(14:16):
of a quad you know those littlefour four by thing four wheelers that you
know, people used to go aroundon off roading and stuff that Jen had
had for twenty years that that herex bought one of their kids and it
never got used. Fifty sat inthe garage for fifteen years. Finally got
rid of it, and I wasI was so giddy Monday night when they
came and picked it up because Igot oh my god, I had this
(14:37):
space. Now, isn't that crazy? And you know, I know we
got to take a break real quickly, but you ever cleaned the garage and
you're in a in a zone whereeverything fits into a place and there's a
perfect place for everything. That happenslike once in your life. Yeah,
and then you're you know, it'sa walk off Homer. Yeah, you
don't have to have you know, you don't have to to make love to
(14:58):
your significant for no the week becauseyou're so satisfied in that moment. You're
listening to Tim Conway Junior on demandfrom KFI AM six forty. Hey,
Belli O, I know we're notsupposed to do a deep dive when it
comes to ratings, all right,We've been asked not to do that,
and so I'm not gonna do that. I'm not gonna do a deep dive
(15:20):
when it comes to ratings. However, I like to thank Bellio Chrochy.
He's not here. I'm sitting infor Angel, Steph Fuje, matt Ricky,
Kiki, Richie sorry Richie right, yeah, it's Richie. Yeah.
I feel like Bill Handle, SteveGregory, Aaron ben Mosch, the newsroom,
(15:43):
sales, Robin Berluci, Nil Savadra, everybody associated with this show on
KFI. And I'm not going todo a deep dive in ratings. I'm
just going to tell you. Coastone oh three point five was the number
one rated show between four seven pm. Monday through Friday, this little show
(16:06):
was second in all of radio AMFM. We came in second, and
I can't thank everybody on this crewmore. Thank you, thank you,
thank you. Everybody played a bigpart, and we got number two in
the entire city. The biggest radiomarket in the United States. New York
(16:33):
may have more people, but theydon't have as many people in cars that
we do in Southern California, andwe got number two in the entire Southern
California area. So thank you toeverybody on the show. Thank you,
thank you, thank you. Greatgreat job everybody. Okay, all right,
now let's get into some protests thatare going on. Bellio, I
(16:56):
told you this thing at USC isgoing to blow up on Monday morning.
I said, wait a minute. They had a young lady who was supposed
to speak at USC campus, andnow they've turned her down and denied her
the ability to come up and orthe honor to come up and speak in
front of her graduating class. Andwe want to jump in here real quickly.
Wait again, this just came acrossour newsbord here. There are reports
(17:18):
of explosions in the Iranian city ofIsfahan this following the drone attack or at
least attempted attack that came from Irantowards Israel, and of course Israel vowed
to respond to that attack earlier thisweek. There's been no confirmation yet that
any activity that is happening in Iranoriginated in Israel. But Tucson versus Sorry,
(17:41):
what a wrap for Sorry, sorry, buddy Again, there are reports
of explosions in the city of Isfahanin Iran. As more information comes in,
we'll give it to you, okay. And they and so they think
that this might be ISRAELI Israel attackingwell only only it's only a possibility because
Israel high said that they would respondto those attempted attacks by Iran that occurred
(18:03):
over the weekend that were shot down. I see, Okay, So that
is just coming in then, sowe'll hear more about that as the night
moves in. Okay, all right, we'll keep an eye on that.
It might be Israel retaliating against Iranfor the three hundred missiles and drones that
they launched into Israel over the weekend. And we had not got any confirmation,
(18:25):
but there are reports on social mediathat there have been fighter jet there
has been fighter jet activity over Syriain between Israel and Iran. Doesn't this
smell a little like World War Three? It's definitely got a build to it
that is creating that tension. Ithas the high notes the odor of a
(18:45):
World War three going on. Yeah, it doesn't. It's not showing signs
of mellowing out, that's for sure. The other way. You're right,
and it leads us to our nexttopic here. There are a lot of
kids, mostly young people, whoare protesting nowadays. Columbia University, there
(19:07):
was four or five kids that arrestedand then the president of Columbia University said,
come in and take them all,and now one hundred kids, over
one hundred kids were arrested for protestingat Columbia University of New York. And
exactly what you were just talking aboutprior to now with USC. Yeah,
with the valedictorian, she was toldnot to speak during the graduation ceremony because
(19:30):
of allegations or accusations at least ofanti Semitism on some postings that she put
online. Yeah, and she's notdenying them. And when they asked her,
you know, what do you thinkabout the Israelis and the Jewish people?
Of Israel, Do you condemn thoseposts that you put up on Twitter?
(19:51):
And she would not deny, Shewouldn't say that she condemns them.
So the USC graduation is still ithink four weeks away, and that is
going to build and build and buildand become a huge, huge powder cake
for USC. USC is caught theway sort of like the Dodgers were with
(20:11):
the Nuns of Perpetual Motion or whateverthey call those nuns, where they had
to retrack. They invited them, the nuns, and then they disinvited them,
and then they reinvited them. Andnow the same thing's going to happen,
or it looks like it's happening onthe campus of USC. So there's
still four weeks left until the graduationat USC, and that is going to
(20:33):
be a hot bid here in southernCalifornia. Then you're in Columbia and the
Columbia University of New York City.Over one hundred kids arrested today for protesting.
And then yesterday a lot of thetwenty eight Google employees walked and stormed
into the CEO's office and said theydemand that they curtail or cancel a project
(20:57):
that they were doing with Israel andGoogle instead of canceling the project with Israel
arrested all twenty eight kids and threwthem out and then fired them all today.
So we're going to come back andplay some audio. But this country
is simmering and it is going tobe a hot summer of protests. And
(21:18):
I have a feeling that this theseconventions, the Republican Convention and the Democratic
the Democrats Convention this summer are goingto be huge, huge events with a
lot of protests, a lot ofactivity, a lot of security, and
a lot of arrests. This isgoing to be one hell of a summer
(21:40):
coming up here. All right,we'll come back and talk about USC Columbia
and Google, and then we'll alsokeep an eye on Iran and see if
the explosions that Crozer you just talkedabout in Iran are indeed because of the
retaliation of Israel and the Israeli AirForce an army over what happened over the
weekend with a r throwing three hundreddrones and missiles into Israel. It's getting
(22:03):
wild out there and we're covering itall. You're listening to Tim Conway Junior
on demand from KFI AM six forty. We've got some breaking news coming out
of the Middle East. First, let me set up the story here for
you, and then we'll go intothe Israeli breaking news. Who's some audio
there. But over the weekend, three hundred missiles and drones shot at Israel
(22:27):
from Iran. That has not happenedwhere it leaves the Iranian soil. Usually
they were doing it from Syria orLebanon. And they were now three hundred
missiles and drones left Iran and attackedIsrael. Israel had planned twice to retaliate
(22:48):
for that and then called it offtwice and then Israeli Israel was bombed from
I think Syria or Lebanon. Andso now we think at least their initial
reports are that Israel might be attackingIran. So here's a little bit of
the background here, and then we'llgo to the late breaking news tonight with
Israel vowing to retaliate against Iran.Tensions ratcheting higher as the Iranian back group
(23:12):
ISBELA launched this attack on an Israelimilitary base in northern Israel. The drones
crashing into this village, then thatfireball, Isbela releasing this video POV of
the drone in that death dive.Eighteen wounded, including fourteen Israeli soldiers.
And this all happened after this weekendwith the three hundred drones and missiles shot
(23:37):
at Israel, and so it's gettingvery, very tough for Israel to sit
back and not do anything about this, and as the world waits to see
how Israel responds to Iran, sourcestelling ABC News that on at least two
nights this week Israel prepared then abortedretaliatory strikes against Iran. And in his
first public comments since Hern's massive missileattack Saturday, a defined Prime Minister Natamya
(23:59):
who signaling Israel will do everything necessaryto defend itself. Okay, so that
was in the last couple of days. Now some breaking news out of Iran
and Israel may have fighter jets flyingfrom Israel to Iran to attack them buzz.
As you mentioned, Israel has beentelegraphing that it will respond, officials
(24:22):
telling me at the time and placeof their choosing, they did not specify
what that response would be like.We didn't know when it would come.
And of course this is in responseto that massive missile salvo from last Saturday.
The largest ballistic missile salvo in history, and of course Iran has said
that if Israel chooses to respond, their Iranian response would be severe and immediate.
(24:44):
Future Matt, thank you from thelatest in Israel. Let's turned out
to Chief Global Affairs anchor Martha Radditsin DC with the latest. Martha,
what are you hearing? It isa single senior US official who said that
it had started that Israel has retaliatedand hit one site in Iran. There
are reports this evening that other placesIraq and Siri have been hit. This
(25:08):
US senior officials said they simply cannotconfirm that. There were reports yesterday that
Israel would hold off on these strikesuntil after the after passover, but today
we started getting indications that it couldcome much quicker than that. This senior
(25:29):
official also said the Israelis had beenquite secretive about this, so there's very
little information we had at this pointabout the strike that the US senior official
said that Israel had made inside IRack. Well, Martha Radis, thank
you for that update. Okay,So that's Martha Radis with ABC News.
And then this is in from breakingNews from Jpost dot Com and Israeli missile
(25:56):
strike targeted a site in Iran earlyFriday. It's already early Friday morning.
I think it's around seven am orso, or no, six am,
almost seven am. The report camein shortly after local sources reported explosions in
central Iram and southern Syria and inBaghdad and in Iraq. So flight trackers
(26:23):
showed several flights headed for ram hadturned around and diverted from their planned routes.
And so this is going to bebreaking news all night long and all
weekend, and we'll see what happens. But it's becoming hotter over there,
and it's not even summer where it'syou know, one hundred and twenty degrees
(26:47):
and people are on edge. It'syou know, late April, and we'll
find out whether these planes did comefrom Israel and bombs going off in central
Iram. And I think it'll markthe first time. I think it was
the first time that the Iranians thatattacked Israel from the motherland from Iran and
(27:10):
those missiles left Iran, and Ibelieve in many decades, this will be
the first time that Israel Israeli planesleft Israel and attacked Iran directly and that's
about a seven hundred eight hundred mileflight. So if they're doing it with
fighter jets, there has to besome refueling going on. And the United
(27:34):
States said that they wouldn't be involved, but you have to think that that
technology is either you know, Idon't know if Iran has their own refuelers.
I think they depended a lot onthe United States for that. And
is the United States involved in helpingthose jets refuel because they can't simply can't
make it, you know, eighthundred miles, drop any ordinance, drop
(27:56):
any bombs, and then make itall the way back to Israel. Those
planes have to be refueled at leastonce, probably twice in order to make
it back safely. So Mo Kellyis up next. He'll have all the
details for you on what's happening overin Iran and Israel and the Middle East.
And we'll be on tomorrow to coverall of that breaking news. It's
(28:17):
Conway Show Mo Kelly Next on KFIAM six forty Conway Show on demand on
the iHeartRadio app. Now you canalways hear us live on KFI AM six
forty four to seven pm Monday, through Friday, and anytime on demand on
the iHeartRadio app.
